Esteemed war veterans of the liberation struggle have joined hands with millions of “born free” civilian Zimbabweans to beg the country’s military and security bosses to block President Robert Mugabe.
This is in the face of his threats to commit violence of Gukurahundi massacre levels (as analysts say), the first of their kind against loyal liberation fighters, the 92 year old said last week.
Under the constitution the army is under strict instruction by law to protect every Zim national in the face of threats to life within and outside Zimbabwe’s borders wherever and whenever the police and CIO are limited.
Mugabe last week violated the constitution when he threatened to violently deal with the war veterans who two weeks ago told him to resign in a historic paper submitted by a large crowd of his own cadres in Harare, lawyers say.
Mugabe on Wednesday announced he would torture the war vets: “Once we find out who wrote that statement, the party will punish them. “During the war we had rebels who we punished… some by detaining them underground, feeding them there,” he said pointing to the torture he exerted on those who disagree with him.
Mugabe also threatened protesters with jail, saying the country did not want violence.
Airing their views in writing at the weekend, Zimbabweans begged the army to deal with Mugabe. “Please don’t just bunk, you need to act, remember you created this on us, ” wrote one Harare resident.
As War Vets’ spokesperson, Douglas Mahiya, was arrested last week, scores of war veterans joined the chorus at the weekend, saying they would not be cowed down by one man, Mugabe. “We are prepared to die if he wants to kill us for speaking our views,” wrote one vet who asked not to be identified.

Chiwenga’s contract expires.
Meanwhile, it emerged that Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) commander General Constantine Chiwenga’s employment contract is about to expire amid indications President Robert Mugabe will not renew it. Military sources said should Mugabe decide not to extend Chiwenga’s contract, Zimbabwe National Army commander Lieutenant-General Philip Valerio Sibanda will take over.

Inviting the military to intervene is not wise. Once the likes of Chiwenga taste power, it will be nearly impossible to have a democratically elected government in Zim. We don’t want a meddlesome military. What we want is that the military, the police and the other security organs of the state remain neutral and professional…and not to do ZANU PF’s bidding. Matibili himself said as much at the ZANU PF congress back in December 2014 when he told the military to stay out of politics. Without the state security organs on its side, ZANU PF will not last long!
People you should not under rate our Army and Police . They have people at heart but because of the nature of their jobs they cannot be found to be loyal to the govt of the day. I applaud these mean and women of Zimbabwe. But note that there shall come a time when leaders cross the red line and they will definately side with the masses. they cannot allow Mugabe to act like Smith under their watch though they are loyal citizens. Mutumwa haana ndava. Its only those who go to extremes like Makedenge that do not have a future in our country.

I am compelled to give you advice. You seem to have so much bitterness in you. Bitterness is not only dangerous to your spiritual being, but also comes with physical ailments such as heart attack, high blood pressure and arthritis. You really need professional help.
