Bakeries will with effect from tomorrow revert to the old price of bread, as the government takes further steps to halt the unjustified price increases in the economy.

Zimbabweans had this Sunday woken up to a new price of bread with a loaf now costing $1 from 90 cents, and from $1 to $1.10 respectively, hence the convening of an urgent meeting today organised by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Enterprises Development in response to the price increases.

Stakeholders who attended the meeting are: Confederations of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI), Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC), Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe, National Bakers Association, Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ), Small Bakers Association of Zimbabwe, Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers and the Retailers Association of Zimbabwe.

The Minister of Industry, Commerce and Enterprises Development Dr Mike Bimha said bakeries and various players are engaged with the National Competitiveness Commission on challenges affecting firms.

He said constraints threatening viability of firms are also being taken into account to solve price increases.

  1. Thanks the price of bread has been reversed, however, i would like to say hands up for the stakeholders in this industry for coming up with such a stand. We farmers have been very unfortunate. Compund D, AN, and other fertilizers have gone up from $29/50kg to $38/50kg bag (for compound D) while AN from $33.00 to $43.00/ 50kg bag. No one has said anything. I guess we have no stake holders in this industry.

  2. The prices for other basic commodities should also be monitored eg beef, soap, sugar, cooking oil, salt etc

  3. Thats is my question price changes must go through these organisations otherwise we are wasting our time if there are operating in their own independent world. However, the question now is what happens to all the other products which have been increased prices since mid-November, the Minister must give a policy direction.

  4. This is an act of sabotage.Prices have gone up ever since 14 November 2017.If I had the authority I would force retailers and manufacturers to revert to prices of basic commodities to where they were before the 14th of November 2017.There is no justification to increase the prices of basic commodities. The price increase is just meant to profiteer by the so called business people as well as to try to undermine the leadership of our PRESIDENT. The PRICE INCREASE MUST STOP FORTH WITH. Bread beef and other basic commodities have gone up for no apparent reason. This is total madness which needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency

  5. Confederations of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI), Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC), Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe, National Bakers Association, Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ), Small Bakers Association of Zimbabwe, Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers and the Retailers Association of Zimbabwe.

My question is: Do these organs of industry discuss these increases before effecting them, they effect the same % increase as if their costs and raw materials are sourced from one supplier.
