By Own Correspondent| Opposition MDC has congratulated the Sudanese people for pushing for the removal of the country’s long-time dictator Omar Al Bashir.
Below is the full text of the MDC statement:
“The MDC congratulates the people of Sudan for successfully pushing for the removal of a longtime dictator, Omar Al Bashir.
Despots must fall in no particular order. They defined African politics and defined it in the wrong way.
On his part, Al Bashir was involved in crimes against humanity.
He must be held accountable for the genocide and civil war. Everyone else who did the same must be subjected to the justice delivery system in line with International Law.
We are, however, quick to mention that the AU must be worried that elections in Africa have ceased to be the basis of authority.
Modern functional states exist on the sole basis of a liberal construct in which the masses are the masters of their own destiny by choosing those who govern them.
The focus must be to ensure a smooth civilian transition. The AU must urgently underwrite the process otherwise left on its own, the process may develop into a military State.
In Zimbabwe, the push for Mugabe to leave office which had gone for close to two decades was hijacked by the military and now the people have to fight again.
This pattern must not be allowed to happen as it will be bad for the citizens of Sudan. We speak from experience as this anarchy is bad for the continent.
