The chicks being burnt
The Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) of Zimbabwe has expressed concern over reports saying 19 600 day-old chicks that had been smuggled from South Africa into Zimbabwe across the Limpopo River were intercepted and burnt by police.
On Tuesday, police told The Herald that they had intercepted and arrested Admire Ndlovu of Mwenezi and Prince Gumbo of Dulivhadzimu suburb in Beitbridge who were transporting the consignment.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson Chief Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident saying: “Our team on patrol intercepted some suspects after smuggling chicks into the country.
“The matter has since been referred to the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) for further management. We understand that the chicks were destroyed by fire as per standard customs regulations.”
The state media further indicated that customs officials claimed to have had discussed the issue with the veterinary department who observed the burning.
“Following their arrest, they were taken to Zimra officials where the chicks were destroyed with guidance from veterinarians,” said the State Media.
The veterinary department has however issued a statement expressing ignorance of the act. The department said they are investigating the issue.
