Gweru – A suspected rapist who was found in the act with a Grade 3 pupil offered US$5 bribe to buy the silence of the man who caught him in action.

The 62-year-old Norman Makovere from Mawere Village under Chief Nhema in Shurugwi presented the witness who is the uncle of the complainant with US$10 and went on to plead for US$5 change.

It is the State case that in November 2020 Makovere allegedly raped the minor in her mother’s kitchen. The accused arrived at the complaint’s homestead and asked for water to drink.

He then realised that the minor’s parents were not at home.

Instead of drinking the water, Makovere asked the minor’s siblings to go and play outside as he grabbed the complaint. He lowered the minor’s pants and allegedly raped her. The minor’s uncle passed by and found the accused in the act.

Makovere then offered US$10 to the uncle but the latter reported the case to Police.

Gweru Regional Magistrate Phathekile Msipa remanded the accused in jail for judgement.
