Zimbabwean forward Macauley Bonne has signed a one-year deal with Southend United, returning to the English National League where he previously played for Luton Town. Bonne, 28, joins the club on a free transfer and will wear the number nine shirt.

“I’m really happy to be here and crack on,” Bonne said after signing. “I’ve been training with the boys and it’s a really good group. I’m looking forward to getting back to scoring goals in a league I know really well.”

Bonne was released by Gillingham at the end of last season and has been working on his fitness. He could make his debut for Southend on Tuesday evening against Eastleigh.

The club expressed their delight at Bonne’s arrival, stating: “We are delighted to announce the arrival of striker Macauley Bonne! Bonne joins us on a one-year deal with a Club option and will wear the number nine shirt at Roots Hall.”
