By A Correspondent| In a significant development for vehicle importers and returning residents, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has confirmed that vehicles over 10 years old are now officially allowed to be imported into the country. This change comes under new regulations announced today, bringing relief to those looking to import older vehicles.
However, while the restriction on the age of vehicles has been lifted, returning residents will still need to comply with the six-month ownership rule. This means that returning residents can only import vehicles they have owned for at least six months prior to returning to Zimbabwe.
The newly amended regulations, reflected in Statutory Instrument 172 of 2024, outline that certain categories of vehicles, including antique, classic, vintage, and historic vehicles over 25 years old, also qualify for exemption, provided they meet specific criteria related to design, originality, condition, rarity, and historical significance. These categories will still need clearance from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce before importation.
The amendment aims to broaden vehicle import options for Zimbabweans while maintaining certain controls, particularly for returning residents and special vehicle categories. More details are expected to be released in the coming days, as officials work on implementing the changes effectively.
This development follows ongoing discussions on the importation of vehicles and their impact on the local market, with government officials keen to ensure a balance between consumer access and economic considerations.
