Government Rolls-Out New Curriculum

By James Gwati- The government has rolled out the new education curriculum and, at the same time, launched an intensive training programme to prepare teachers for its implementation ahead of the beginning of the first term on Tuesday.

The curriculum focuses on equipping learners with life- and work-ready skills, values, and attitudes through a strong emphasis on science and technology, which aligns with the government’s skills development strategy.

The mandatory training program aims to familiarize educators with the syllabus and its implementation.

Key features of the heritage-based curriculum include:

  • Primary Education: Streamlined learning areas to reduce curriculum overload, focusing on six core areas: Indigenous Languages, English Language, Science and Technology, Mathematics, Social Science, and Physical Education and Arts.
  • Secondary Education: A two-route system catering to diverse aspirations. The academic route is designed for learners pursuing higher education, while the vocational route emphasizes practical skills for trades and careers. Ordinary Level students will take five compulsory subjects with an option for three more, while Advanced Level students will select three career-aligned subjects.

The 2024 examination classes (Grade Seven, Form Four, and Form Six) will follow the 2015-2022 curriculum framework for their Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) assessments but will now undertake School-Based Projects (SBPs) instead of CALA for continuous assessment.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Moses Mhike, highlighted the program’s focus on reducing the workload and addressing gaps in the previous system. 

“This training will ensure teachers are equipped to deliver the reduced learning areas and guide learners along academic or vocational pathways,” he explained.

The Ministry stated that the new approach aims to foster inclusivity, relevance, and quality education. 

Schools are also instructed to continue enrolling learners after the opening day and to release 2024 examination results without withholding them, ensuring no learner is left behind.

Monitoring of teaching and learning activities will commence this week, assessing compliance and identifying areas needing improvement to enhance school governance and functionality.
