A draft motion circulating in Zimbabwe, penned by Zanu PF’s Energy Mutodi (Bikita South) and Charles Moyo from the Citizens Coalition for Change, calls on Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi to urgently present a constitutional amendment bill before the House of Assembly.
The bill seeks to amend Section 95(b) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, allowing the presidential term to be extended for a period not exceeding five years, as determined by parliament.
The draft motion also proposes changes to Section 91(2) of the Constitution, enabling parliament to determine the additional period a president may continue in office after the expiry of their second term.
The petition states that President Emmerson Mnangagwa, whose current term is set to expire in 2028, deserves an extension for his contributions to Zimbabwe’s social and economic development.
Additionally, the motion proposes amendments to Sections 143(1) and 158(1)(a) to extend the terms of parliamentarians, allowing parliament to determine the duration of their office for the purposes of fostering economic development, peace-building, and government restructuring, including the potential creation or removal of government posts.
However, Moyo has since distanced himself from the petition.
” I have not signed such a document.Furthermore I have no knowledge of the document’s origins in any case.”
