By A Correspondent- A woman from Lupane Business Centre was battered by her angry husband after he stumbled on a ‘‘stray’’ love message on her phone.

Caroline Moyo (23), who is a nurse aide, had to dash to a police station to report physical abuse she suffered at the hands of her husband Musa Moyo (38).

The matter was then referred to court.

She told the court: “We were relaxing at home then I received a stray love message on my WhatsApp from an unknown man. My husband, who was just sitting next to me, saw the love message which read: ‘I love you and I cannot wait to meet up with you’. After that he started to accuse me of cheating on him and labelled me a prostitute who sleeps with her colleagues.”

Caroline described her husband as an abusive monster who is in the habit of bashing her whenever a misunderstanding arises between them.

“My husband is very abusive, whenever we have a misunderstanding, he gets angry quickly and hurls insults at me, at times he bashes me while accusing me of being a stubborn woman of loose morals,” she told the court.

Musa shot down his wife’s defence:

“I strongly believe the love message was from her lover because when I tried to wrestle her phone from her so that I could send the message to my phone to use it as an exhibit she quickly deleted it and that cemented my suspicion that she was cheating on me.”

Magistrate Ndumo Masuku found Musa guilty and ordered him to pay a $10 000 fine. If he fails to pay, he will have to spend three months in prison.

By A Correspondent- A family from Lobengula West suburb was left speechless after they were given a wrong body by a funeral parlour and had to travel all the way to Plumtree to exhume the body of their loved one for reburial in Bulawayo.

A family insider, who requested anonymity, said a misunderstanding broke out after the late Mthokozisi Ndlovu’s family members were handed a wrong body by Falakhe Funeral Services officials.

“On Tuesday at around 8am, we left for Falakhe funeral parlour to take the body of our late relative Mthokozisi Ndlovu (34), who had died last week at Thorngrove hospital, for burial at Luveve Cemetery.

“But we were surprised to see the funeral parlour officials seeming to be too busy and dashing about. After about 20 minutes of waiting, one of our relatives approached the official, who told him to wait for some minutes,” said the insider.

A family member, who only identified herself as MaMpo, said an official approached them and explained that they had given their dearly departed’s body to the wrong family.

“The official told us that one of their drivers collected the deceased’s body and it happened that he went off duty for two days, resulting in another driver giving the Brunapeg family Mthokozisi’s body,” she said.

The insider said they had to report the matter to the police and took the body of the family in Plumtree.

“We had to go and engage the family with the help of Falakhe Parlour and they agreed to exhume Mthokozisi’s body so that we bury it here in Bulawayo,” said the source.

The source added: “We buried Mthokozisi at Luveve Cemetery yesterday (Thursday).”

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the body mix-up saga.

“I confirm we received a case where a body was swapped with another body resulting in one family burying a wrong body. The Bulawayo-based family had to travel to Plumtree to exhume the body for burial at Luveve Cemetery. It is important to do body viewing, at least one relative who knows the deceased.”

By A Correspondent- In a rare show of bravery, a quick-thinking 14 year old girl from Bhekani Line in Ntabazinduna, Matabeleland North province, turned into Wonder Woman when she warded off her 49-year-old grandfather, who allegedly attempted to rape her, by violently grabbing his testicles and squeezing them hard.

The Form One girl gave her grandfather a painful lesson when she reportedly gripped one of his testicles with her sharp nails as he was allegedly trying to sexually assault her in her bedroom.

After being attacked, the grandfather screamed for help while begging for forgiveness.

Circumstances of the tale read as follows:

On 8 February 2021 and at around 3pm the girl was in her bedroom cleaning her room. It is reported that her grandfather, who was peeping through the window, saw her and stormed into the bedroom and grabbed her.

While grabbing her, he forcibly fondled her breasts and took off her clothes and underwear. In the process the grandfather is also alleged to have unzipped his trousers and pulled out his manhood.

The girl is alleged to have wrestled with him and at the height of the struggle, she grabbed his testicles and squeezed them so hard that he wailed for help.

After thwarting her grandfather’s evil move, the girl is alleged to have escaped, leaving him lying helpless on the floor. She went to her grandmother’s bedroom where she narrated the nasty ordeal to her.

The matter was reported to the police leading to the man’s arrest.

For that offence of attempting to defile her granddaughter, the man was brought before the court and he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Nomasiko Ndlovu.

He was not asked to plead to a charge of attempted rape and was remanded in custody to 23 April 2021.

President Chamisa denounced the arrest and detention of human rights activist, Makomborero Haruvizishe.

Makomborero Haruvizishe was arrested by armed government agents last week.

By A Correspondent: Some Econet Wireless customers have taken to social media to express their disappointment over the mobile network operator’s provision of “poor services.”

Many who wrote to Econet complained about the poor network which they said made them unable to use the data bundles they had purchased.

One customer wrote on Twitter:

Dear @econetzimbabwe, with all due respect I would like to express my disappointment in your below par service that you are providing these days. Please know that these bundles are being bought by people’s sweat to expire without being used. Just address the problem, thank you.

The above sentiments were echoed by Tatenda Chipepwe who tweeted claiming to be a loyal customer.

Econet would “sincerely apologise for the delayed response” and urge customers to “please visit your nearest Econet shop in possession of your identity card so that a complete registration can be completed on the sim card.”

Econet Wireless is the biggest Mobile Network Operator (MNO) in the country and at one point, other network providers begrudged the telecoms company for its stable and strong internet.

Sadly, the MNO has of late been a shadow of its former self as it has constantly struggled to ensure a stable and dependable network

By A Correspondent- Freelance journalist Kumbirai Mafunda was on Friday arrested by police while conducting his lawful duties at the Harare Magistrates Court.

Mafunda, who is the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) Communications Officer, was later freed without aa charge after the intervention of lawyers Tinashe Chinopfukutwa and Jeremiah Bamu.

Posting on Twitter, ZLHR Executive Director Roselyn Hanzi said the wanton detention, arbitrary arrest or harassment of journalists must be condemned. 

She wrote:

Very disturbed and appalled that [police] have arrested our [Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights] Communications Officer who is a registered free-lance journalist [Kumbirai Mafunda]. He was at Rottenrow court covering our cases.

Our Comms Focal [Mafunda] has since been released without charge after the intervention of [ZLHR] Tinashe Chinopfukutwa and Jeremiah Bamu.

The wanton detention, arbitrary arrest or harassment of journalists must be strongly condemned by everyone.

This is not the first time journalists have been harassed while conducting their duties during the coronavirus-induced lockdown.

In April last year, freelance journalist Terence Sipuma was reportedly assaulted by members of the police and the army in Harare while conducting his duties.

Sipuma was stopped by the security officers at the Kuwadzana roundabout in Harare while on his way to Chegutu to report on Zimbabwe’s 21-day COVID-19 lockdown.

By A Correspondent- Kwekwe Polytechnic College has dismissed as fake a letter purporting to be an order for staff and students at the institution to take the Chinese-developed Sinopharm coronavirus vaccine.

According to ZimFact, the college’s Principal, Evans Musara said letter is fake and was manufactured by “people who are surviving on peddling falsehoods.”

The letter, which is dated 25 February 2021 and signed and stamped by one T. Dube (Dean of Students) orders all staff and students at the institution to be vaccinated before the March/April 2021 Higher Education Examination Council (HEXCO) examinations.

The letter reads: Due to the risk of COVID-19 pandemic Kwekwe Polytechnic received the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine The Ministry of Health and Child Care is taking the following steps:

Effective immediately vaccination programme at Kwekwe Polytechnic on the 27th of February to the 1st of March 2021, all Staff and Students enrolled at Kwekwe Polytechnic are to be vaccinated with only the following exception: All candidates of the upcoming HEXCO examinations and all Polytechnic staff.

We recognize that there are staff and students that have strong views on both sides of this issue specifically on the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine.

However, this is not an area where we can accommodate any deviation from this new protocol.

The development comes after Mutami went underground after being blocked from flying back to Australia.

The Aussie citizen was last week told she cannot leave the country until she gives official state witness testimony into her allegations against her ExBoyfriend. She says Mliswa among other things has sounded out intentions to poison the ZANU PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s son, and Local government minister July Minister. She also said Mliswa has in his possession undisclosed top security information on the White City bombing on June 2018.

Contacted for a comment Mutami’s lawyer told ZimEye that she will come out soon. She said, “she is alive, she is ok and she is safe.I can’t say much due to professional ethics; She will come back to you soon.”

Also commenting on the development, state sources told ZimEye, Mutami is still in the country. They said this without disclosing her exact location. Other sources said that she is living at a local hotel in Harare.

By A Correspondent- Relatives of the late Strive Madamombe (11) who was recently murdered by his stepfather Owen Nyamukachi have reportedly demanded US$2 000 from the murderer for them to remove their son’s blood that has congealed in the house.

According to the African custom, the blood of a murdered person can only be cleaned by a blood relative.

According to a statement by police, Nyamukachi, of Zengeza 2 suburb of Chitungwiza, crushed his stepson’s head with a hammer on 7 February following a misunderstanding over the purchase of airtime recharge cards.

He gave Strive US$1.00 to buy airtime worth ZWL$20.00 but instead, the boy bought airtime worth $50.

The boy’s mother, Abigail Chindomu told H-Metro that she has relocated to her brother’s house in the same neighbourhood leaving one tenant at the house.

She said:

The house was locked and I am staying at my brother’s house since the Madamombe family is yet to settle their issues with the Nyamukachi family on the cleansing of the house.

Memorial service for my son will only be conducted upon the finalisation of the two families’ issues on removing of the blood from the house.

The spokesperson for the Nyamukachi family, Tiny Nyamukachi (44) said the boy’s avenging spirit has already started to torment the family and they are now scrounging for the money.

He said:

As Nyamukachi family, the blood of the boy murdered by our relative has already started to haunt us and we are now breathing fire due to the demands of the late boy’s parents.

We are meeting every day to collect money demanded by the Madamombe family so as to remove blood clots in the house.

The community which used to rely on the clean water from the house has been robbed as well since the house was locked from the day of the incident.

By A Correspondent- MDC Aliance Secretary-General, Chalton Hwende has responded to several claims by some of the party’s members who recently defected to the ruling ZANU PF.

Among other things, he’s been accused of trying to influence Nelson Chamisa to expel Job Sikhala from the party. Hwende speaks after Lilian Timveos and Blessing Chebundo had defected to the ruling party.

He said:

ZANU PF has continued with its protracted war of attrition against the MDC Alliance and its leadership. The regime is using our erstwhile colleagues who have left us and joined their moribund regime to attack and destabilize the MDC Alliance through peddling malicious falsehoods and scurrilous allegations especially against my person.

The intention is to weaken the MDC Alliance leadership and destabilize the party. It is not surprising as most regimes bone out of a coup entrench themselves through co-optation of opposition elements and systematic targeting of their legitimate opponents. We are a natural target since our President won the 2018 election whose victory the regime stole from us.

While it is not in the ordinary for me to respond to ZANU Pf allegations on our internal issues, I would like to address some of the concerns considering that they are intended to damage both my personal integrity and most importantly the repute of the party. First. allegations were levelled that party funds have been misappropriated. In addition to our audit (of the party finances in the period after 2019 congress) which was successful I must state that we have tried and tested systems of deploying financial resources in the organisation which leave no room for misappropriation by any single individual. While human beings are fallible, systems are fail-safe. I take pride in the systems we have put in place which cannot be manipulated in the manner suggested.

Second, the allegation that I have tormented people in meetings to the point of tears and even drove a few to the absurd, deplorable and treacherouS act of joining ZANU P.F. is laughable. Constitutional meetings of organs of the party have continued uninterrupted since congress in the physical and virtually in instances where we are unable to meet physically due to lockdown restrictions.

The organ that was singled out by ZANU PF speaking through the renegades, the Standing Committee, is chaired by the party President. In all our Standing Committee meetings, our President has ensured that meeting etiquette is observed in line with our democratic principles of tolerance, diversity of thought and freedom of speech. Should it be the case that a member feels they have been treated unfairly by another, the party has competent mechanisms to address grievances as a way of ensuring that our platforms remain safe spaces.

I state here that if any member feels aggrieved by my conduct, I am personally available and willing to subject myself before organs of the party to answer to such allegations. I presented myself before congress in Gweru and had I not been elected, I was ready and willing to work with the one elected; such is my faith and confidence in the competency of our internal democracy. In the same spirit, I am open to criticism and correction. Be this as it may, I know that the current spurt of attacks is orchestrated by ZANU PF to put a wedge between the SG and the office of the president. These efforts will continue to fail dismally as I am not mistaken in the execution of my mandate to serve the institution and to give unquestionable support to our President Adv Nelson Chamisa.

For the record those who have left the MDC Alliance have done so voluntarily without any undue pressure from any quarter. No one was pushed out of the MDC Alliance.

It must astonish any right thinking citizen that those who claim to be running away from being insulted in private in the MDC Alliance are joining ZANU PF, a party which has not only insulted them publicly in the past but has maimed and killed thousands of MDC Alliance supporters. That kind of duplicity and treachery is shocking. We all know that those who have left the MDC Alliance and joined ZANU PF have done so to benefit from ZANU PF patronage and corruption. Others have done so after failing to recover from their loss in the popularity contest during our elective congress in 2019. We will work better to give the necessary psychological support to sore “losers” as well as ideological orientation to members that in a democratic organisation like the MDC Alliance we are all winners when the best is deployed and congress must never be the basis of terminal acrimony.

Those who have decided to join the gravy train are free to do so but they should never justify their treacherous behaviour by peddling falsehoods and mudslinging those who have chosen to keep fighting and speaking for the people. Despite the odds, the people’s movement has persevered with the unwavering support of the jobless graduate, the starving pensioner, the vending mother in the dusty streets of Harare right to the support of the farmer in the last but in Umguza. I personally will never betray the people’s cause. We are up against a ruthless enemy but we will prevail. The final call is unchanged. The journey is like a pendulum swing; the measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left but the final call remains unchanged, victory is certain

By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa Thursday hinted that individuals who are refusing to take the coronavirus vaccine won’t get jobs and essential services.

He made the remarks while addressing hundreds of Zanu PF supporters who gathered the commissioning of the Epping Forest Water Supply Augmentation Project for Bulawayo and the ground-breaking ceremony of the Gwayi-Shangani-Bulawayo pipeline project in Nyamandlovu, Umguza District, Matabeleland North.

President Mnangagwa’s remarks are a clear departure from the government’s policy that vaccination is voluntary as there is a possibility that citizens won’t get jobs if they refuse to take the vaccine.

While speaking in Shona, the president reiterated that vaccination was voluntary but added those who refused to take the vaccine won’t get jobs.

He said:

You are not forced to be vaccinated but time shall come when those who are not vaccinated won’t get jobs and won’t be able to board ZUPCO buses. So, decide what you do.

I-vaccine leyi irayithi, inhle liyithathe (this vaccine is safe, please take it up). The vice president of the party and the country had the first jab, he is still here.

My cabinet and myself in two weeks will be next when the next batch comes, I will be vaccinated. Wena ungubani (who are you not to get vaccinated)?

The president spoke after his deputy Vice President, Constantino Chiwenga who is also the minister of Health and Child Care volunteered to be the first person to be vaccinated with the Chinese-made Sinopharm vaccine.

Zimbabwe would be following in the footsteps of the Vatican City which earlier told employees that they may risk losing their jobs if they refuse to get a COVID-19 vaccination without legitimate health reasons.

President Mnangagwa earlier said the country can only return to normality after the majority of the population would have been vaccinated to ensure herd immunity.

By A Correspondent- MDC Alliance trio, Joana Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri, and Netsai Marova were among more than 50 activists who staged a protest in Harare demanding the release of their colleague, Haruzivishe Makomborero.

The picketers who were holding placards branded “Free Mako Now” and “Stop Judicial Capture,” staged a flash protest outside the Harare High Court on Thursday.

Makomborero, a pro-democracy campaigner, is being charged with kidnapping, participating in a gathering with intent to commit public violence, and breaching peace or bigotry. 

Addressing protesters after Makomborero had been denied bail Thursday, Mamombe said:

We are worried that this weaponization of law by the police and growing persecution of activists has a pernicious and gnawing effect on our ‘nascent’ democracy.

Today we send a clear and unequivocal message to this regime. We are not afraid! We will not be neutral in the face of brutality and weaponization of the law. We will not stand aside while our country is turned into a banana republic. Our resolve is unshakeable and our faith in a new Zimbabwe unbreakable.

Makomborero’s lawyers claim the former Zimbabwe National Students Union secretary-general was arrested last week at gunpoint and were probably intending to torture him.

They also claim that the security agents who took Makomborero were forced to drop him off at Harare Central police station after he screamed hysterically.

The state alleges that Makomborero, together with others, forced his way into Impala Motor Spares and detained employees whom they accused of causing the arrest of their colleague Takudzwa Ngadziore last year.

He is denying the charges.

By A Correspondent- Government has suspended the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) from participating in Covid-19 programmes, in an unprecedented move that may have farreaching consequences in fighting the pandemic.

The Zimbabwe Independent gathered that Health and Child Care permanent secretary Jasper Chimedza, on Tuesday, ordered the international health partners to stop, forthwith, Covid-19 activities for the next three weeks.

A senior government official last night said Covid-19 vaccination was a sole responsibility of the government and cannot be outsourced to “private operators or NGOs (non-governmental organisations)”.

Chimedza dropped the bombshell on the UN agencies when the teams were preparing to monitor the ongoing vaccination of health workers by government using Chinese-donated Sinopharm vaccines.

The Health and Child Care permanent secretary and the deputy minister, John Mangwiro could not comment yesterday, as they were said to be busy.

“I am in a meeting; much tied up. Can you get in touch with me in about three or four hours,” Mangwiro said. He did not answer subsequent phone calls.

It is understood that some programmes such as the WHO Covax vaccination plans will go ahead as planned since the government has already signed the memorandum of understanding.

The European Union office in Harare confirmed this in a tweet on Wednesday: “Fabulous to see that the #Covax rollout has begun in Africa! #Zimbabwe will also very soon get 1,152 million doses under the Covax scheme, to which #TeamEurope is the biggest contributor”.

The reasons for the suspension were not yet clear as the government is said to have failed to properly communicate its message to its long-time health partners.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services minister Monica Mutsvangwa said: “We are working very closely with all our partners”.

However, high-level officials said the government was “on its own” after dumping WHO and Unicef.

“All international partners in the health sector were suspended from participating in Covid-19-related programmes. They have not been doing anything since Tuesday,” an official, who cannot be named due to the sensitivity of the matter, said.

“What happened is that teams from WHO, Unicef, Crown Agents, John Snow Inc (JSI) and others had gathered at WHO offices in Harare on Tuesday morning waiting to go for an assessment of the vaccination programme, but the government ordered the organisations to suspend such Covid-19 activities.”

Another official added: “According to what was communicated to us, these organisations can continue with other programmes, but are not supposed to be involved in anything to do with Covid-19. This means we are as of now unable to train healthcare workers, support visits to health institutions, and PPE provision.

“We were told to continue doing other programmes which have nothing to do with Covid-19. We await government directive on the way forward.”

Unicef spokesperson James Maiden said the organisation will continue to play its role in partnering the government in sourcing for vaccines.

He said: “Unicef continues to play a key role in the rollout of vaccinations in Zimbabwe in partnership with the government and many other development partners.

“Unicef is central to the rollout of the Covid-19 vaccine globally through the Covax facility and in Zimbabwe is working with the government and other partners in preparing the country to receive and distribute vaccines.

“This role includes preparation and technical support, procurement of the Covax vaccines and behavioural change communications,” he added.

Maiden went on to say: “Unicef is pivotal in supporting many areas of the overall Covid-19 national response pillars including coordination, risk communication and community engagement, infection prevention and control, case management, education, supply and logistics.”

WHO country representative for Zimbabwe Alex Gasasira said they would also continue partnering with the government in the fight against Covid-19.

“WHO continues to work with the government of Zimbabwe and all its institutions, including the Ministry of Health and Child Care in the national Covid-19 response effort,” he said.

Unicef is facilitating supply of free Covid-19 vaccines in partnership with the European Union, Geneva-based organisation Gavi the Vaccine Alliance, which is a public-private global health partnership, whose main aim is to enable access to immunisation in poor countries, the Global Fund for Health and other donors.

According to sources in the health sector, these initiatives could actually see Zimbabwe vaccinate its entire population for free before the end of the year.

Other affected organisations, which have been working closely with the government since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country in March last year include the Crown Agents Ltd, a nonprofit international development corporation headquartered in London, United Kingdom, and has subsidiaries in the US and Japan.

As stated on its website, the organisation works in partnership with governments, institutions, donors, foundations, philanthropists and the private sector to tackle complex challenges, ranging from procuring and delivering PPEs and vaccines.

JSI is a US-based organisation, which has been helping the government in conducting public health research, technical and managerial assistance to public health programmes under WHO.

By A Correspondent- Zanu PF Mashonaland East province has ordered party members who are neither district nor provincial co-ordinators to stop forming WhatsApp groups using the party name and logos.

The move is meant to curb the spread of false messages about both the party and leaders, with members accused of settling personal scores on social media platforms.

According to a letter dated February 23 and signed by provincial secretary for administration Kudzai Majuru, party members have been urged to stop using President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s picture on their WhatsApp groups.

“The provincial leadership has noted with concern the mushrooming of social media groups bearing the party name, logo and the President’s picture being abused for various reasons, including settling personal scores,” Majuru said.

“Group administrators using the party name, logo and President’s picture are by way of this letter advised to rename their groups and shun using the party name.”

Zanu-PF party members in most districts of the province have been exchanging harsh words on social media groups, especially after the shambolic district co-ordinating committee (DCC) elections that left the party divided.

Majuru added: “However, those with genuine reasons to use party name should seek clearance from the provincial headquarters and get guidelines on what should be avoided when using party name. “Please also note that party coordinators will form party district social groups and party officers at province will do so at provincial level and above.”

Majuru yesterday confirmed the authenticity of the letter and said the move was meant to bring sanity to the province as well as stopping people from fighting for personal gains using the party name.

By A Correspondent- Government should not use COVID-19 as an excuse to deploy soldiers to enforce lockdown regulations, legal think-tank Veritas has said.

The think-tank said use of soldiers on policing duties was against recommendations made by the Kgalema Motlanthe Commission of Inquiry into the August 1, 2018 shooting, which said the military should only be used as a last resort.

The Motlanthe Commission was set up by President Emmerson Mnangagwa after the military shot and killed six protestors and injured 35 on August 1, 2018 when MDC Alliance supporters took to the streets demanding the release of presidential results.

One of the recommendations by the commission was that law enforcement should be left to the police and the deployment of the military to assist the police should only be allowed under extraordinary situations.

“Soldiers man roadblocks together with the police to enforce lockdown restrictions on movement,” Veritas observed in its latest report.

“Soldiers are also deployed to patrol high-density areas and clear city centres. Their involvement in enforcing the lockdown has been institutionalised in regulations under the Public Health Act, which includes members of the (Zimbabwe) Defence Forces in the definition of ‘enforcement officer’.”

Veritas said armed soldiers recently arrested 12 opposition party officials in Chinhoyi on charges that they gathered at party offices in contravention of lockdown regulations, a duty which should have been done by the police.

“The delay (implementing the recommendations) can’t be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic because the legal reforms that are needed to democratise Zimbabwe and to implement the commission’s recommendations can be developed, drafted and passed by Parliament even if the country is in lockdown,” the think-tank said.

“The pandemic has, however, been used as a pretext for ignoring the commission’s recommendations that soldiers should be called on to assist the police only as a last resort. As we have noted, soldiers have been manning roadblocks and helping to clear city centres during lockdowns.”

Soldiers have been accused of brutalising members of the public in the suburbs where they have been deployed alongside the police to enforce COVID-19 lockdown restrictions.

Mnangagwa will take the lead and get vaccinated when the second batch of vaccines are delivered in the country in the next two weeks, the state owned Herald reports. 

Zimbabwe last week received 200 000 vaccines from China which has also availed 1,8 million doses of vaccines for purchase.

When the first batch of 200 000 doses of vaccines donated by China arrived in the country recently, Mnangagwa, assigned his deputy Dr Constantino Chiwenga, who is also the Minister of Heath and Child Care, to lead the vaccination programme by taking the first jab.

Speaking at the commissioning of Epping Forest Water Supply Augmentation Project for Bulawayo and ground-breaking ceremony of the Gwayi-Shangani-Bulawayo pipeline project in Nyamandlovu, Umguza District, Matabeleland North yesterday, Mnangagwa encouraged Zimbabweans to take up the vaccination.

“Last week saw the roll-out of the first phase of our National Covid-19 vaccination programme which targets frontline workers, the security sector, the elderly and those with underlying conditions,” said President Mnangagwa before requesting VP Chiwenga, who was in attendance, to join him on the podium.

“Social media was saying the leadership will not be vaccinated, on that particular day, we had various engagements, so I called my Minister and Vice President to get the first jab so that you know that the vaccine is safe. Ivaccine leyi iright, liyithathe.

“The Vice President of the country had the first jab and he is still here. My Cabinet and myself in two weeks when the next consignment comes, we will be vaccinated,” said the President.

He assured the nation that more vaccines are coming and people will have the chance to be vaccinated.

Mnangagwa said on Wednesday afternoon, he got communication from Chinese President Xi Jinping through his ambassador to Zimbabwe that the country was donating an additional 200 000 Covid-19 vaccines to Zimbabwe, bringing the total donation to 400 000 doses.

“The Ministry of Health supported by (Finance Minister Professor Mthuli) Ncube also bought two sets yesterday, 600 000 doses which will come during the first two weeks of March and another 1,2 million doses,” said Mnangagwa as he reiterated that the vaccines are free.

“There are so many companies that have come forward who want to import the vaccines and sell them, we have said no. If any company buys vaccines, they must be distributed freely.” Mnangagwa expressed gratitude to China for the donation of vaccines saying procurement plans of other vaccines from India and Russia were at an advanced stage.

“Meanwhile, let us mask up Zimbabwe and continue to adhere to the laid down health protocols,” said the President.

He called on Zimbabweans to remain vigilant in the fight against Covid-19 saying he was pleased that the country’s prevention measures were showing good results. -Herald

This seemed to be the case when a Victoria Falls man who was angry that his uncle had rebuked him for driving his Range Rover Discovery without his consent armed himself with bricks and shattered the vehicle’s windscreen.

Ropafadzo Muposiwa of 4812 Chinotimba was hauled before Victoria Falls magistrate Lindiwe Maphosa for malicious damage to property recently after damaging three windscreens including the front, with a combined value of $28 350.

Muposiwa was lucky to escape jail life after his uncle Donald Karati of Mkhosana probably considered that blood is thicker than water and wrote an affidavit withdrawing the charges because the accused had fixed the damage by repairing the car.

The court withdrew charges before plea.

Said Karati when he initially made a report: “We had a misunderstanding during the day after he drove my car without my permission. I took the car for fixing and later I got a call from Elvis Nyathi telling me that it had been damaged by the accused. When I went to check I found that my car’s windscreen had been damaged.”

By A Correspondent- A Harare magistrate has again postponed bail ruling on former Cabinet Minister Ignatius Morgan Chombo who has been in remand prison since Monday.

Chombo was arrested on allegations of illegally parcelling pieces of land in Harare and Zvimba Rural District Council during his tenure of office as Local Government Minister between 2000 and 2015.

He will spend another night in custody after Harare regional magistrate Stanford Mambanje deferred his matter to tomorrow for bail ruling.

Mambanje was supposed to hand down the ruling this Thursday after he had postponed it to today when Chombo appeared in court on Wednesday.

Mambanje said he was still going through the bail submissions.

Chombo is charged with fraud and five counts of criminal abuse of office.

He was arrested by the Special Anti-Corruption Unit (SACU) on Monday in connection with the Uchena Land Commission Report.

Outspoken Norton Legislator, Temba Mliswa, has said ZANU PF is no longer the same as the one he once knew and those crossing floors to join it should answer which ZANU PF they are joining.

“I note politicians crossing floors and joining @ZANUPF Official but the question is, which ZANU-PF are they joining? I continue to maintain it’s no longer the ZANU-PF we all once knew,” Mliswa said via Twitter.

Mliswa said this after senior MDC-Alliance officials and former legislators, Lillian Timveos and Blessing Chebundo have defected to the ruling Zanu PF party citing lack of direction and violent tendencies by Nelson Chamisa’s political outfit.

By A Correspondent- MDC Alliance youth leader Tererai Obey Sithole has blasted Vice President Kembo Mohadi after his press statement on his alleged illicit multiple sexual relationships with married women.

Sithole took it to Micro blogging Twitter saying Mohadi has no moral ground after he alleged hacking of his privacy and voice cloning.

“Kembo Mohadi has moral ground to speak about right to privacy given that he sits in the presidium of brutal regime that had utter disregard of the same right. Mamy activists have appeared in court countless times with their calls &texts being used as evidence #ShutUpKembo,” Sithole said.

Mohadi said nothing is going to change and  his future is determined by president Emmerson Mnangagwa.

By a Correspondent- Machete-wielding gangs have invaded Mutoko business centre where they are robbing businesses of cash and other valuable properties.

The Police in the Mashonaland East province town, has launched a manhunt for a heavily-armed six-member machete gang after the gang got away with cash and cellphones they forcefully possessed from t business owners at Karonga, among other valuables.

Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza told NewsDay, that three separate incidents occurred recently.

“Police is looking for a gang of six armed men who recently pounced on three unsuspecting victims stealing cash and other valuables at gunpoint,” Mwanza said.
“We urge businesses to have watertight security systems to avoid such incidences.
However, we are appealing to anyone with information on their identity and their whereabouts to report to the nearest police station.”

He said the six had been stealing from shops and vehicles, ransacking houses, and demanding cash and other expensive items.

On February 21, they raided Timothy Madimutsa (53) of Marere village, Joseph Kanyongo (57) of Kanyongo village under chief Charehwa and Beauty Kavhukatema of Mutoko and stole money, handsets and groceries.

They deflated their victims’ vehicle tyres before leaving in an unregistered car.

By A Correspondent- Police in Bulawayo’s Pumula South suburb have arrested for heavily assaulting a suspected thief they caught at a house in the suburb leading to his death while in police custody.

According to the state media, the brutalised suspect (Matchazadek Ndlovu) died in a cell at Pumula Police Station on the night leading to the arrest of the seven.

Donald Sibanda (24), Michael Junior Moyo (23), Mgcinumuzi Moyo (20), Emanuel Nyoni (34), Philani Ndlovu (23), Ndumiso Khumalo (23) and Stanley Siziba (21) are the seven who have been arrested in connection with the assault.

They appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Jeconiah Ncube yesterday facing murder charges and were advised to apply for bail at the High court which they did.

They were remanded out of custody to April 23.

Appearing for the state Mr Tapiwa Solani said the accused persons saw the now deceased trying to gain entry at a house in the suburb and apprehended him.

They went to Emthunzini where they apprehended Hloniphani Tshuma claiming he was an accomplice to the now deceased. The accused persons allegedly assaulted Tshuma and Ndlovu whom they later surrendered to police in Pumula.

Chairperson of Pumula south residence Mrs Auxilia Nyamujara who spoke to the chronicle news crew regretted the incident saying it was not what the community wanted when a street patrol team was set up to counter a series of break-ins that had traumatised their suburb.

“What happened is regrettable. We as a community, and in my capacity as the residents’ chairperson, do not condone violence of any nature. What happened was just unfortunate. We are just trying to protect our neighbourhood from thieves who are wreaking havoc in the community” said Mrs Nyamujara.

Another resident Mr Kevin Filton Moyo who is also a member of the Police Constabulary Committee said he is saddened by the incident as the idea of the street monitoring team was to see to it that the suburb is safe from thieves.

“We are having a serious challenge with thieves here and it is due to this background that we ended up establishing the street monitoring team which would see to it that there are security checks. Our children from the suburb make up this team. What happened is not to be celebrated and to us, it is a great mistake. It should not happen to any human being no matter what crime one commits, life is sacred and should be preserved at all times,” he said.

In solidarity with their children, residents donated US$2 per household to pay bail for the accused persons.

By A Correspondent- A 19 year old Harare woman was raped several times by a 33-year-old man between January and February this year after believing a purported prophetic message from a self-proclaimed prophet.

Through their Twitter account, the police said the prophet told the woman that he had seen a vision of his would-be husband, but the man later turned out to be a rapist.

The woman then informed the “prophet” that she had been raped by the “future husband” but the self-proclaimed seer concealed the crime.

Police said:

The ZRP encourages members of the public to report all cases of sexual abuse promptly and avoid trusting strange prophetic utterances from pastors and prophets.

A Harare woman (19) was raped on several occasions between January and February 2021 by a suspect (33) after receiving a prophetic message from an alleged prophet who indicated to her that the man will be her future husband.

By A Correspondent- A suspected serial thief was on Tuesday morning caught in the act after he fell from the ceiling of a building in Gwanda town centre.

The suspect was apprehended at a place commonly known as Emabhizeni along 4th Avenue.

Emabhizeni is part of partitioned shops that share one roof.

A Chronicle news crew arrived at the crime scene shortly before 9AM, and the suspect was with police in a car as members of the public bayed for his blood.

The daring thief is suspected to have entered one of the shops in the wee hours and broken through the ceiling to access other shops before stealing property.

He was spotted by a worker in the next building who raised alarm.

The thief panicked and fell from the ceiling.

As he tried to flee using the front door, he was apprehended and was lucky police were nearby before the public meted instant justice on him.

“I was just arriving for work when I heard sounds at the back. I made a follow up as it was still quiet with most people not having reported to work yet. I saw the thief trying to jump from the ceiling.

“I managed to climb into the ceiling and chased after him and he fell into a shop next door to us commonly known as China Shop. Security details managed to catch him before he fled from the scene,” said a supermarket employee.

A man of the cloth, Reverend Fred Kamanga of Zimbabwe Christians Empowerment Fellowship, said the thief broke a window at his shop to gain access to other shops.

“The thief broke a top corner window and managed to lift the window handle before he gained access. He ransacked the place and only found a knife in a drawer. He then broke the ceiling before he went to other shops,” said Reverend Kamanga.

A cellphone dealer who spoke on condition of anonymity said they were trying to establish some of the things he might have stolen as a bag full of their belongings was recovered.

“We are still trying to ascertain what else this person might have stolen as we recovered a satchel which had belongings from a number of us in this shop,” said the cell phones dealer.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the arrest.

She could not release his identity as he is assisting police with investigations on other cases he is allegedly linked to around the town.

“I can confirm that we arrested a man in Gwanda who had broken into shops around the CBD,” said Insp Mangena.

A police source said the accused person spent the day assisting police working on other cases he is suspected to be linked with in the mining town.

“As of now, the suspect is still under the CID department as he is linked with other crimes thus, he is not available at the station,” said the source. -statemedia

By A Correspondent- 2074 frontline workers were yesterday vaccinated bringing the total number of vaccinations to 7872 people ever since the Chinese Vaccine Sinopharm arrived in Zimbabwe last week.

This was revealed by the Ministry of Health in an update that also sated that over 150 people are hospitalized due to the novel coronavirus.

According to the Ministry of Health, 154 people are hospitalized countrywide:

As of 23 February 2021 @1500hrs, there were 154 hospitalised cases, Assymptomatic 72, mild to moderate 46. severe 33 and 3 in Intensive Care Units.

The update also stated that the deaths were recorded in Harare (4), Bulawayo (3) and Mashonaland East(1). Zimbabwe has reportedly set aside $100 000 million to buy at least 10 million vaccines to achieve herd or population immunity.

In the open letter that was written by former MDC Alliance Senator, Lilian Timveos, she insinuated that Douglas Mwonzora and Morgen Komichi might have been frustrated out of the MDC Alliance and went on to join Thokozani Khupe in the court resurrected MDC T.

According to Timveos, Komichi was accused of visiting traditional healers trying to revive Morgan Tsvangirai’s spirit at some point and he was hurt by the accusations:

…You(Hwende) know the Standing Committee we had and we insulted Morgen Komichi after you told us kuti Komichi akaenda ku n’anga kunomutsa mweya waTsvangirai ( he visited a traditional healer to revive Tsvangirai’s spirit). Komichi refused to reply saying he need to heal first from the insults and accusations of witchcraft.

Timveos also claimed Mwonzora at one point cried like a baby as he was being undressed for reportedly holding an interview with the Daily News:

…Mwonzora cried like a baby at one of the Standing Committee meeting accused of why he talked to the Daily News and only responded by saying “Nhai vana Mwari inga makahwina ku Congress ko munondishungurudzirei.” (You won at the congress why are you troubling me). I am one of those who made Mwonzora cry after wandifurira kuti (you influenced me to) we must make sure that Mwonzora aenda.

Timveos also made claims that there might be a toxic environment at the MDC Alliance as she claimed some standing committee meetings were made just to undress other people:

Before Morgen Komichi and Douglas Mwonzora left we would hold meetings before every Standing Committee meeting to undress them after Hwende sold us lies. We would get into the meeting for insulting them and no serious business would be discussed except undressing them.

By A Correspondent- A village head was reportedly trampled to death by a herd of raging bulls from Moyo Ranch under Zibagwe Rural District.

According to the publication, the bulls are believed to be part of the herd that is aimlessly wandering in the area unattended and attacking villagers wearing bright red clothes.

The news of the village head’s death at the hands of the raging bulls was confirmed by the area’s councilor, Councillor Idirashe Dongo who said:

We lost a village head recently after the bulls gored him and trampled on him and smashing him against trees. It is so sad the way these animals are behaving, they are behaving like buffalos now and everyone is living in fear.

…Three herdsmen were saved by a tree after the cattle pounced on them as they were herding their cattle in the ranch

Everyone is living in fear of the cattle. Children who attend Bvumira Primary School are at risk as some of the cattle were spotted near the school in recent days. And we are afraid that once we open schools, we would have subjected our children to danger.

She further said no one was claiming ownership of the cattle:

I assumed office and found these cattle around still roaming around with no-one to claim ownership. You never know since no one is dipping them, they might have contracted rabis and turned wild. I have since reported the matter to police and they came and witnessed.

Kwekwe District Civil Protection Unit Chairperson, Mr. Fortune Mpungu confirmed the unnamed village head’s death and said:

We attended the scene with police, Zibagwe RDC officials and officers from the veterinary services among others. For sure there was a man who was killed by the cattle. Our vet team however dismissed the issue of rabies

By A Correspondent- MDC Vice President Welshman Ncube has dismissed rumours that he is planning to leave the MDC Alliance for an international job elsewhere.

Ncube used the microblogging site Twitter to dismiss the rumours and said they were probably being used to decampaign him.

Said the firebrand politician:

Woke up this morning to the old news (this being recycled decampaign news used in the run up to the Gweru Congress) that I am quitting the MDC Alliance to take up some international job somewhere. Someone somewhere is waging psychological warfare. I am not going anywhere.

When one Twimbos asked about the party deputy’s silence Ncube responded and said party building is often done with closed mouths before he agreed he will take the time to engage with supporters in the future while responding to one Nelson Mrewa.

Meanwhile in former MDC A Senator Lilian Timveos’ open letter to Chalton Hwende, Timveos said Hwende was saying Ncube did not come back to the MDC Alliance wholeheartedly.
