Tinashe Sambiri|MDC Alliance leader, President Nelson Chamisa, has accused Zanu PF of denigrating traditional leaders.
Speaking at his mother’s memorial service in Gutu on Saturday, President Chamisa said traditional leaders should not be used by Zanu PF to harass opposition members.
“Traditional leaders are being abused by Zanu PF. Traditional leaders deserve respect and they should be apolitical.
It is sad to note that Zanu PF is using traditional leaders to victimize opposition members.
Traditional leaders are highly esteemed people,” said President Chamisa.
On the way forward he said:
“What we know is victory is certain, it’s only a matter of time.Every struggle has its own unique characteristics. We know exactly what we are doing – please do not panic.
Zanu PF has run out of ideas – that’s an undeniable fact.
I know some people are saying we are failing to deal with Zanu PF tyranny- that’s not true.
We are marching towards total freedom. It is everyone’s duty to fight for freedom – It’s not about Chamisa alone.”
Tinashe Sambiri|Transform Zimbabwe leader, Jacob Ngarivhume, has challenged the Zimbabwe Anti Corruption Commission to deal with rampant corruption in government departments.
Below is Ngarivhume’s statement :
Today l had a two and half hour engagement with the entire board of the Zimbabwe Anti Corruption Commission led by Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo. We raised several issues of concern to the citizens which required answers from the Commission.
Firstly l had reached out to the Auditor General’s office over their reports they have been producing since 2017 which unearthed massive corruption in government particularly command agriculture. The AG’s office indicated that they have an MoU with ZACC which ZACC can use to follow up on any corruption issues raised.
Secondly, l touched base with the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Finance chair Hon Tendai Biti, who indicated that they are finalizing a report on Command Agriculture which showed that over US$3 bn could not be accounted for. Though a full report is to be produced for Parliament and ZACC, they revealed that there is enough information for ZACC to start their investigations on the corruption, but this has not yet started.
The ZACC Chairperson said the Commission had received the AG’s reports but were waiting for forensic reports to be commissioned by the AG’s office so that they look into the issues raised in those reports. She however outlined the limitations faced by the Commission in the pursuit of its mandate. ZACC is sitting on seventy five high profile cases which can not be prosecuted as whistle blowers are demanding protection which the current legal framework can not provide. There is urgent need to reform our legal system and amend our court rules.
We raised issues of the 15bil diamond money looted and the Drax Covidgate money. Justice Moyo indicated that they are still in the process of recovering the money stolen from Covid donations. A total of 2mil had been paid out.
As citizens we will continue focusing on the forensic audits and push for the investigation of the command agriculture funds. We will not rest until justice is served.
By A Correspondent| The commuting public in Zimbabwe’s second largest city of Bulawayo have been left stuck following the decision by the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) to withdraw services citing poor roads.
Bulawayo’s Ward 28 councilor, Kidwell Mujuru recently told councillors during a full council meeting that ZUPCO had withdrawn services in some areas in Cowdray Park suburb.
“Residents were now walking more than 2km to get public transport. He (Mujuru) was also concerned about the main road leading to the Cowdray Park revenue office which was now a security risk,” reads part of the council minutes.
Emakhandeni councillor Pilate Moyo also concurred with Mujuru.
“ZUPCO had also withdrawn services in Emakhandeni especially in areas connected by Masiyephambili Drive as the road was in a very bad state,” councillor Moyo told the meeting.

Get immediate help from those present.Make sure that the area is clear for the lifeguard.Take the drowning person out of the water immediately if they are nearby, but if they are far you must not swim to them unless you are a skilled lifeguard.
First Aid Measures:
Place the drowning person on their back on a flat surface, and be careful when handling them as they may be unconscious after bumping their head against something.Try to call the drowning person and shake their shoulders to make sure they are responding. If the person does not respond, check their breathing.Ask someone to call the Red Crescent (997).If the person is breathing: Place them in the recovery position and warm them up with clothes or blankets. Change their wet clothes while waiting for the ambulance.
If the person is not breathing:
Elevate the head by placing a hand on the forehead and another hand down the chin and lifting it gently to clear the airway.Check their pulse by placing two fingers on the windpipe (Adam’s apple).Start artificial respiration (mouth-to-mouth resuscitation) straight away by slowly blowing into the mouth of the person 5 times (for 1.5 to 2 seconds) while observing their chest as it rises with each blow. Wait until the chest drops back before you blow into their mouth again.Start cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR (30 chest compressions).Repeat mouth-to-mouth resuscitation twice then do CPR once, until the person wakes up or until the ambulance arrives. If the drowning person starts breathing again before the ambulance arrives, they must be warmed up with clothes or blankets and their wet clothes must be changed.Monitor the patient and keep checking their pulse and breathing until the ambulance arrives.

Tinashe Sambiri| A Mberengwa sex worker known as “Sisi Tsvigiri” has claimed she had sex with her blood brother after using love charms.
Sisi Tsvigiri, whose real name is Eugenia Chirevai Chiwara, was caught in bed with her own brother last week.
Family sources said she then drank poison in an attempt to take her own life following the incident.
Sisi Tsvigiri confessed that she was given love charms by controversial Masvingo preacher Isaac Makomichi.
“Because of poverty I went to Makomichi to seek the love charm and he gave me a substance to rub on my hands and said if I shake hands with someone then that person will automatically fall in love with me and do everything I want.
Sometimes I forget that I should not shake hands with my relatives.
I am regreting and I am willing to revisit Makomichi so that he can reverse the love charm,” said Eugenia.
Church leaders in Masvingo say Makomichi’s herb is evil because it is a tool that is being used to collect money through the back door.
A defiant Makomichi blamed Eugenia for the mistake she made.
Makomichi is under pressure to disclose the source of his love charm.
Yesterday , all Chitungwiza councilors and staffers who were attending ordinary full council were arrested. They were released without charge in the evening.
A couple of weeks ago, the Mayor of Chitungwiza was arrested on spurious charges and held in cells for more than 4 days . He was eventually granted bail one of whose conditions was to bar him from setting foot on council premises.
At the same time, the deputy Mayor and four other councilors were recalled and arrested on fabricated charges of criminal abuse of office.
In Harare, the same pattern of events , was being witnessed. At a full council, all councillors were arrested and released without charges. The Mayor, Advocate Mafume was arrested and is being held in cells and repeatedly being denied bail.
In the meantime, members of staff also got arrested for criminal abuse of office. Even a director who got reinstated a week earlier was arrested for criminal abuse of office.
All what is happening in the Harare Metropolitan councils is a sad attack not only local governance but also on the will of the people who voted for the MDC Alliance councilors. We know that ED and Zanu Pf are angry that the people of Harare have consistently rejected them and it is for this reason that they are being punished.
Local government in Harare has been rendered dis functional through the twin strategy of illegal recalls and unnecessary arrests. ED and Zanu Pf are engineering failure in the local authorities with the hope that they can cause the people of Harare to be angry with the MDC Alliance. The effects of these choreographed activities will be felt for a very long time to come.
We call upon , The Provincial Minister, Mr Chidawu and his Provincial Coordinator, Mr Muguti who are the key drivers of the attack on councils to place people first ahead of political and personal economic opportunity .
The people of Harare Metropolitan deserve better, they want superior services , They demand that government stops interfering with the work of elected councils.

Tinashe Sambiri|President Nelson Chamisa has revealed how his uncle was kicked out of the Airforce.
Speaking at his mother’s memorial service in Chiwara, Gutu on Saturday, President Chamisa said his uncle- identified as Rukweza- was fired from the Airforce following his visit to Manyame Airbase.
“You cannot believe what I am saying but it’s true.My uncle was dismissed from the Airforce simply because I had visited him.
He was kicked out of Manyame Airbase following my visit to the place with Learnmore Judah Jongwe long back.
The level of intolerance in the country is shocking,” said President Chamisa.
“I salute my uncle because he is a principled man.He has never compromised his affection for the family,” added President Chamisa.
Thank you to all citizens who amplified the voice of student teachers, their salaries were reviewed from USD 1.50 to USD 50. Now they have a new battle to fight. They are being forced to repeat in 2021 but they wont be earning the new allowance.
By Jane Mlambo| Controversial cleric Passion Java has insulted investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono after he questioned why Zimbabweans follow the socialite at the expense of people pushing for national interests- like Namatai Kwekweza.
Responding on Twitter, Java accused Chin’ono of seeking funds from donors through attacking politicians and the government.
MDC-T acting national spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni, who doubles as interim party president Thokozani Khupe’s press secretary, has been acquitted of rape, the Zimbabwe Independent reports.
Phugeni (44) appeared before Western Commonage regional magistrate Sibongile Marondedze last month charged with contravening section 65 of the Criminal Law, Codification and Reform) Act (Chapter 9:23).
Prosecutors said Phugeni unlawfully had sexual intercourse with a woman, who could not be named for ethical reasons, during the period extending from June to November 2018, at Emhlangeni and in Magwegwe West, Bulawayo.
Phugeni denied the charge, saying the accusations were politically-motivated and meant to “politically soil” his image after he was nominated for Senate.
The leader of the Council of Student Teachers, Walter Muzamani and other student teachers have been arrested at Morgan Zintech in Harare. The student teachers were protesting against the decision to force them to repeat in 2021.
By A Correspondent | Zanu-PF secretary for administration Obert Mpofu and his wife Sikhanyisiwe, a Matabeleland North Senator, have tested positive for Covid-19.
Mpofu told a local online news organisation that he and his wife were “stable” when reached by phone.
They couple is self-isolating separately in Harare, Zanu-PF acting spokesman Patrick Chinamasa added.
Mpofu and his wife are the latest high-profile figures to contract the virus, which was blamed for the death of freelance journalist Zororo Makamba in March; lands and agriculture minister Perrance Shiri in July and ZBC reporter Janet Makamba on Saturday.
On Saturday, Zimbabwe reported 70 new Covid-19 cases and 10 deaths. Nine of the 10 deaths were in Harare, while one was recorded in Bulawayo.
Overall, Zimbabwe has reported 10,617 Covid-19 cases which have resulted in 291 deaths.
Chaotic scenes characterised the Zanu PF district co-ordinating committee (DCC) elections at the weekend amid allegations of vote-rigging, burning of ballot papers and violence in most parts of the country.
The ruling party held its DCC elections in eight provinces in the country except for Harare and Bulawayo.
Zanu PF chairperson Oppah Muchinguri was scheduled to address the Press yesterday evening over the elections, but she was in no-show after journalists waited for several hours.
Acting party spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa, who was locked in a meeting late last night, could not immediately comment.
However, chaotic scenes dogged the DCC elections in most parts of the country with contestants almost trading blows.
In Mutare, there were riots after some party members burnt ballot papers following allegations of rigging and vote-buying.
A vehicle that was supposed to deliver ballot papers in Mutare broke down in Marondera on Saturday, which delayed the process.
Four candidates, Binali Yard, Clever Muparutsa, war veteran Ivan Mbengo and the outspoken Cecilia Gambe were competing for the Mutare chairperson’s post.
Names of some candidates were missing from the ballot papers.
Some Zanu PF supporters, who commented on condition of anonymity, said the elections were not free and fair due to massive rigging with some party members voting without identity cards.
“There is a massive shortage of ballot papers, just imagine there is a ward with 349 registered voters and the ward only received 47 ballot.
papers. We decided that the ballot papers must be burnt,”the party member said.
“In ward four, people are voting at least five or six times with some agents reportedly keeping ballot papers in their pockets and receiving bribes from some candidates to help them rig the elections,” he said.
At one time, Gambe threatened to pull out of the race, citing incidences of multiple voting.
In ward four in Sakubva, there were reports of people voting without identity cards, while some presiding officers were accused of taking bribes.
Voting started late at some polling centres such as Mutare Junior, Beit Hall in Sakubva, and Mutanda Primary School as ballot papers were delivered late.
A rowdy group in Sakubva ended up burning ballot papers due to disgruntlement over the manner in which the election process was being handled.
However, Zanu PF Manicaland secretary for administration, Kenneth Saruchera rubbished the rigging allegations.
“The problem is that some candidates are just cry-babies,” Saruchera said.
In Marondera, some voters abandoned the polls because the names of their candidates of choice were missing from the ballot paper.
In Hurungwe, new ballot papers had to be brought in after the initial lot were rejected because the names of some candidates were missing.
A new set of ballot papers was collected from Harare overnight.
There was also drama at Chikangwe in Karoi when an aspiring candidate for the chairmanship post Franko Ndambakuwa almost assaulted Shepherd Marime, a youth member from a rival camp.
Ndambakuwa, a war veteran, had to be restrained by other party members.
In Mashonaland Central, the voting process progressed into the night amid concerns that this would impact on the smooth running of the elections.
A contestant in Chiredzi, Tarusenga Makamba, a former ward three councillor, had his name missing on the ballot paper, yet it appeared on the voters roll.
Some voters were given plates of sadza and drinks in ward four in a suspected case of vote-buying.
In Matabeleland North, voting started late and heavy rains disrupted the process.
1/ Observations of a Political Commentator…. The @ZANUPF_Official DCC elections began from a problematic position. Structures weren’t in place, no cell/branch elections were conducted.
2/ The DCCs were marred by impositions & accusations of anti-ED, G40, Gamatox taunts were rife instead of convincing the people what one has to offer. People simply want to know what candidates will do to turn around the economy and to address their welfare.
3/The fissures are apparent& come 2023 this’ll be disastrous for the party. How do you call provinces people’s provinces when all the Chairs save for Chadzamira & maybe Matiza weren’t elected? So you have a scenario where unelected Chairpersons appoint their own unelected persons
4/ who go on to impose people not in structures. It’s a horror!! I’d hate to be a @ZANUPF_Official leader in such a fiasco where gossiping & rumourmongering rule the day. You can never take somebody’s vote away from them. They’ll keep it with them to your detriment
5/ More trouble and purging lies ahead & come 2023 they’ll be a split. In an area of 120 voters where only 20 vote can you say the will of the people has been encompassed? What about the other 100? The best thing @ZANUPF_Official can do is to nullify these elections & restructure
6/ Restructuring may commence from January 2021 beginning with the Cells then the Branches in February followed by District elections in March and Provincial in April, Central Committee in May with the Politburo being subsequently formed. That would be my advice
7/ For now, this is the worst crop of politicians I’ve seen in ZANUPF, no ideology, nothing. What happened to the school of ideology or is just a facade? The current people are totally devoid of orientation & contradict themselves…. it’s a farce
There are rumours circulating on social media that Shaleen Nullens aka MsShally was left homeless after the death of Ginimbi and was fired by Ginimbi’s ex-wife Zodwa Mkandla. She has however reacted to the news as she explains what really happened. Below is her responds
“I don’t usually respond to rumours but I decided to respond just to this one. When God decided to take Genius “Ginimbi” away that second my position in his precious life was no more.
“Genius believed in excellence, to stay close to him you had to prove you had something to offer, something that could cause a positive impact be it in business or his personal life. He was all about results and facts.
“I was His manager till the end and i gave him results beyond his expectations. I am a woman who produces good results and talk less, my results in running successful businesses and events were even acknowledged by Forbes Africa on the Forbes Africa 30under 30 list as one of the young entrepreneurs in Africa to look out for, to add to it the UN department UNHCR requested me to be a co-founding member of the businesswoman network the list can go on and on, i appreciate being recognised but my focus it’s to make money that is what i was trained to do.
“This goes back to when I was 14years old my father made sure he is training me to work hard for money and not wait for handouts.
“I was living with Genius not because I was homeless . When Genius was buried i flew back to South Africa the next day because i can’t live in that house without him, every corner of that households precious memories,” said Ms Shally.
The High Court has ruled that nurses can continue working flexible hours despite the noting of an appeal by the government against an earlier High Court decision granting that permission.
High Court judge Justice Happias Zhou on Friday granted the Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA) leave to execute a judgment granted in their favour to resume flexible time pending the hearing of an appeal filed by the government to the Supreme Court.
“Notwithstanding the noting of an appeal against the judgment of this honourable court dated November 20, the first to third respondents remain barred from implementing the directive by the third respondent on October 19,” ruled Zhou.
On 20 November this year, High Court judge Justice Martin Mafusire ruled in favour of public sector nurses in their dispute with Vice President and Health and Child Care Minister Constantino Chiwenga over the termination of flexible working hours.
This was after ZINA had sued the Health Services Board, Health minister and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, and permanent secretary in the Health ministry Jasper Chimedza for unilaterally terminating nurses’ flexible hours.
Former Zanu PF Mashonaland Central official Goodman Tamuona Musariri has slammed President Emmerson Mnangagwa saying his ascendancy after the November 2017 coup was null and void.
Musariri said he will soon approach the courts to challenge his ascendancy while praising his deputy Constantino Chiwenga for his role in the coup.
He was speaking to Newsday in an interview published on Monday.
“I became a fan of the Operation Restore Legacy of November 2017 which was led by General Chiwenga and the army which I believed was going to end up with the formation of much-awaited transitional authority led by Chiwenga himself. I find Mnangagwa’s ascendancy through the unsanctioned Zanu PF central committee caucus of November 19 2017 unlawful, null and void.
“Chiwenga like any VP in Zanu PF is not an elected member of congress, but an appointee of the President to serve at Mnangagwas pleasure and mercy. Both the MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa and Mnangagwa were illegitimate presidential candidates for 2018.
“Thus the whole ‘new dispensation’ is voidable with Chiwenga’s position being held in abeyance or in suspense mode unless he claims the revision of Operation Restore Legacy after acknowledging the illegitimacy of the ascendancy of Mnangagwa. I, however, would love to see Zimbabwe changing from liberation war movement politics and administration to the modern constitutional participatory multi-party electoral democracy,” said Musariri.
Former president Thabo Mbeki’s surprise reappearance at the ANC’s national executive committee meeting on Sunday set social media ablaze and raised questions on what his sudden return meant.
It appears the Mbeki card has been in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s pocket for some time. One of the first trips Ramaphosa made after being elected president of the ANC at Nasrec in 2017 was to Mbeki’s home to ask for his support.
Sources inside the meeting say Mbeki was brought in to avoid the party disintegrating into an early conference if ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule was forced to step down.
The Star has been reliably informed that the Magashule faction was preparing itself to call for an early conference if he was axed.
Mbeki, a seasoned negotiator, was brought in to manage a potential fallout. Mbeki’s office and the Thabo Mbeki Foundation have not returned any of The Star’s calls.
The threat of an early conference which would potentially remove the top six was further amplified by MKMVA (Mkhonto Wesizwe Military Veterans Association) president Kebby Maphatsoe, who threatened the country with war if Magashule was removed or if Zuma was arrested.
“South Africa will be ungovernable. It will be open war. Let them fire the SG or arrest Zuma,” Maphatsoe warned.
Another source at Luthuli House, the ANC’s headquarters, has revealed to The Star that Ramaphosa first offered Mbeki the position of leader of an envoy to the US to boost economic growth but declined.
Mbeki suggested, however, that Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka, former deputy president and wife of former Scorpions chief Bulelani Ngcuka, be appointed.
Zuma also put in an appearance at the NEC, a move later defended by Magashule, saying “the NEC was wiser because of the attendance of Mbeki and Zuma”.
It appears Mbeki will now be an active factor in Ramaphosa’s decisions, under a code phrase used in Ramaphosa’s inner circle known as “Rescinding the Zuma phenomenon”.
Magashule declined to comment on whether Mbeki was brought in to manage the fallout that would come if he were removed.
“I won’t be removed. That’s it. The ANC is working,” Magashule said.
Magashule is also said to be very close to ANC treasurer-general Paul Mashatile.
In 2008, the then NEC resolved to remove Mbeki as president after a defeat by Zuma at the party’s elective conference in Polokwane the previous year.
Later in 2008, Mbeki was angry the ANC had announced that he would campaign on its behalf after it fired him.
In a letter to Zuma, delivered to Luthuli House, Mbeki complained that he had not been consulted by party bosses about whether he would be available to assist in the election campaign.
Mbeki is understood to have complained about the irony that the very ANC that recalled him from office because it had no confidence in him, saw fit to publicly announce that he would be expected to campaign for it.
Mbeki also raised that he had been attacked for taking Judge Chris Nicholson’s judgment – which implied he was guilty of political meddling and abusing state resources – on review.
THE Covid-19 death toll has risen to 291 after 10 more people succumbed to the global pandemic on Saturday including ZBC’s diplomatic correspondent Janet Munyaka.
She was 48.
Munyaka died Saturday evening at Harare’s St Anne’s hospital where she had been admitted since last week battling Covid-19.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care says of the 10 deaths recorded on Saturday, nine were from Harare and only one from Bulawayo.
A total of 70 people tested positive to Covid-19 countrywide bringing the total number of cases to 10 617.
“We recorded 70 new cases and 10 deaths in the last 24 hours where 1 577 PCR tests were conducted. Of those who tested positive 50 are local cases and 20 are returnees from South Africa,” said the Ministry.
The Ministry also reported that 46 new recoveries were recorded countrywide although the national recovery rate went down to 81,4 percent from 85.
As of December 5, Zimbabwe had recorded 10 617 cases, 8 844 recoveries and 291 deaths.
Bulawayo has the highest number of active Covid-19 cases at 565 against a national total of 1 482. Covid-19 deaths and new cases have been on the increase in what experts have described as a second wave of the devastating pandemic which is likely to kill hundreds if people do not practice hand hygiene, social distancing and the wearing of masks correctly.
In a statement, the ZBC said Munyaka is survived by husband, Jackson and four children.
ZBC acting chief executive officer Ms Halliet Rushwaya said Munyaka was supposed to have graduated with a Masters Degree in International Relations at the University of Zimbabwe last Friday but missed the ceremony after being hospitalised.
“This is a great loss to us at ZBC and to the media fraternity. Janet was a veteran journalist and a friend to many in the industry. Our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time,” she said.
Munyaka joined the ZBC in 2000 as production assistant in the news department after studying Mass Communication at Harare Polytechnic College.
She rose through the ranks from production assistant to municipal correspondent, health correspondent before being promoted to Diplomatic Correspondent, taking over from the late Judith Makwanya.
Forces continue to try to spruce up tainted Impala Car Rental image after the company was caught up in an abduction incident.
The troubled company was over the weekend accorded two awards, the Superbrand of the Year and the Most Trusted Brand in the Car Hire sector for the year 2020.
The Superbrand of the Year award was being sponsored by the Marketers Association Zimbabwe while the Most Trusted Brand was awarded by the Chartered Institute of Customer Relationship Management.
Speaking after receiving the awards, Impala Car Rental Group Brand Manager Ms Tracy Ngoma attributed the achievements to the company’s customer-centric approach and the work ethic engrained in the team over the years.
“It is an honour to receive any form of accolade. We value such recognition as it clearly shows that we are doing things right. We were also humbled to be selected as winners amongst such formidable competitors that we work with in the car rental industry in particular and tourism in general,” said Ms Ngoma.
She added: “I believe we are consistent in the way we do things, and in our service delivery as such those that have direct contact with our service, know for certain the values we uphold as a company.
“As testimony of our excellency in customer service we have been scooping these awards for the past five years. We also owe it to our visionary leader Mr Thompson Dondo, the chief executive officer who is customer-centric and has an open-door policy in managing the business.”
Ms Ngoma said Impala Car Rental has an experienced team that distinguishes it from the rest. She added that Impala Car Rental was the only car hire company that offers 24-hour service.
“As the saying goes ‘experience is the best teacher.’ I believe the amount of experienced engrained in us over the years has enhanced our efficiencies and also improved our systems and the way we do doing things.
“We are flexible, innovative, customer-centric, and we have a leader who is involved in everything to do with the business. “As a result, we continue to grow. Recently we opened a branch in Zambia and business is booming there,” said Ms Ngoma.
She expressed gratitude to Mr Dondo for leading the team from the front.
“We take pride in the way Mr Dondo does business. He has shown us that business requires one to be hardworking, professional and to be a team player who listens.
“We are grateful that we get to interact with him daily. The knowledge and wisdom that he imparts on us are unapparelled and priceless.
“He takes time to groom and guide everyone in the team, including us the mangers
Ms Ngoma said with all the achievements over the years, Impala Car Rental was destined to conquer Southern Africa. “We are definitely going places. In Southern Africa, we now have firm footprints in Zimbabwe, South Africa and Zambia. Continue watching the space because our intention is to conquer the region,” said Ms Ngoma.
Several laboratories have started setting shop in Beitbridge town to service travellers who are required to comply with the internationally set strict and safe cross-border migration standards under the Covid-19 pandemic environment.
The border was re-opened last week and upon arrival, Zimbabwe requires visitors to produce a Covid-19 free certificate with a 48-hour validity. South Africa requires a certificate with a validity of 72 hours.
With respect to commercial cargo, drivers need Covid-19 free certificates with 14 days’ validity.
A survey around Beitbridge town by our news crew last week revealed that there are four testing laboratories, including the one at the District Referral Hospital.
Testing cost up to US$60 at approved laboratories officering Covid-19 tests in Beitbridge.
Assistant Regional Immigration officer-in-charge of Beitbridge, Mr Nqobile Ncube, said many people waited for the border to officially open for them to start the process of getting their Covid-19 certificates.
“In terms of those travellers who were turned away at the entry points to the border, the most common reasons being brought to our attention are to do with the new Statutory Instrument which makes it clear what form of test is required and acceptable,” he said.
The development comes after cross border traders, who are usually the majority to pass through border posts, have said they are ready to abide by the new protocols to curb the spread of Covid-19 as gazetted by Government.
Cross Border Traders Association of Zimbabwe president Mr Killer Zivhu said the association had already communicated with all its members across the country on what was needed to be done in terms of following the Covid-19 regulations.
“We are well prepared,” he said.
“We have identified a registered organisation that is going to test cross border traders and they will be tested on an agreeable fee of US$35. When getting out of the country, they will be tested and given a certificate and when they come back they will be tested and given their results before mixing with others.
“We are going to work hard and closely with the Government in preventing the spread of Covid-19. No one should go out of the country without producing a Covid-19 certificate.
“Some people come as far as Kariba to Beitbridge and let us say they are tested at the border and find that they are positive to the virus, they will be turned back home and what it means is that they will be spreading the virus on their way to the border and they will be spreading it again on their way home.”
Mr Zivhu said testing people before they travelled to the borders would minimise the spread of Covid-19, and cross border traders had heeded the call to do so.
The association has identified various centres in towns and cities like Harare, Beitbridge, Mutare, Plumtree, Victoria Falls and Hwange, where cross border traders can be tested for Covid-19 at a lower cost.
Mr Zivhu appealed for Government to allow buses to carry people travelling through the border since the majority of cross border traders did not have private cars.
The government will consider input from Zimbabweans on the Mbuya Nehanda statue that will eventually be erected in Harare amid indications authorities are mulling the possibility of starting the process afresh following a public outcry.
A statue being made by sculptor David Mutasa sent tongues wagging when its images started circulating on social media after it was shown to President Emmerson Mnangagwa last week.
Some felt that the statue that showed a younger Mbuya Nehanda compared to how she appeared on her only known image was a distortion.
Godfrey Mahachi, the National Monuments and Museums of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) executive director, told The Standard that there was need for consensus on the spirit medium’s image.
“The statue is being erected by the people of Zimbabwe,” Mahachi said.
“Whilst our appreciation of exactly how Mbuya Nehanda looked like is limited because there’s probably one photograph of her, there still needs to be some degree of consensus on the image of her, notwithstanding the limitations related to the issue.
“The opinions of the people matter.” The NMMZ defended the erection of the statue, which some Zimbabweans feel is not a priority at a time the country is facing a myriad of economic-related problems.
“Statues are commonplace throughout the world, including the Christian world,” Mahachi said.
“Zimbabwe a few years ago erected the statue of Father Zimbabwe (late vice president Joshua Nkomo), South Africa and Mozambique erected statues of their former departed leaders, Nelson Mandela and Samora Machel respectively.
“The United Kingdom and the rest of Europe and North America erect numerous statues of various persons regarded as significant contributors to their national histories.
“They are recognising the contributions of these people. “They are celebrating them as distinguished departed citizens,” Mahachi argued.
“They are not idols. They have not turned them into gods. They have made monuments out of their stories. The same applies in our case. Mbuya Nehanda is not being turned into a god because of the statue.
“As Zimbabweans, the statement we are making is that we’re thankful to Mbuya Nehanda for the courage and sacrifices she made through her spiritual leadership of the First Chimurenga and we want present and future generations to remember those contributions and be inspired by them as they also become citizens, who contribute to the common good.”
He said they chose to do a statue of Mbuya Nehanda Nyakasikana because of her role in the liberation struggle particularly her prophetic words before her hanging in 1898 that “my bones will rise,” which inspired the Second Chimurenga.
“It will be remembered that the Second Chimurenga that finally delivered independence and sovereignty to Zimbabweans was directly inspired by the First Chimurenga, in particular Mbuya Nehanda’s prophetic words ‘my bones shall rise’ declaration just before she was hanged by the colonial administration for her role in that early struggle against our conquest by the British,” Mahachi said.
Nehanda is a spirit, who operates through mediums. “There are known mediums of Nehanda before Nyakasikana inasmuch as there are some after her.
“Currently there are several claimants, dotted around the country. The fact that we have a medium through whom we then interact and get guidance from Nehanda the spirit means that the spirit has personified itself through its medium. We can represent the spirit through its medium.
“The medium is our means to the spirit. If we, therefore, want to respect the spirit and to immortalise it through honouring by way of erecting a statue, we represent the spirit through its medium.”
The truck cost the driver a lot more to be pulled out.
VILLAGERS in Nembudziya, Gokwe and surrounding areas are making brisk business using their own manpower or ox-driven draught power to drag cars struggling to pass the district’s flooded rivers.
So bad are the roads in the area that even area MP, Zanu-PF’s flamboyant Justice Mayor Wadyajena, has previously had to abandon an offroad sport utility vehicle after it struggled to cross a river.
Villagers said the most notorious spot during the rain season is at Kawongo Bridge along the road that connects Gokwe South and Gokwe North via Nemangwe.
A haulage truck spent the better part of yesterday stuck in the muddied road as the local youths mobilised manpower while the driver sourced the funds for the lorry to be pulled across.
“It’s a pitty that I am just an employee trying to go about my business, buy I have to pay the local folks some “tollgate fee” for the men to pull and push my truck across,” said the driver.
“I’ve been stuck at this bridge for a while day running around to source the ‘fees’. Other motorists have been paying between US$5-00 and US$10-00 for them to cross the flooded Kawongo River.
“Unfortunately, my truck is loaded and much heavier such that the locals have really gotten an opportunity to milk me dry.
“Authorities really meed to fix this problem because it crops up yea after year,” said the driver, sounding distraught after hours on end on the spot.
By around 1400hrs, his haulage truck that was carrying cement to Nembudziya was still trapped on the bridge.
Urban public transporters users in Harare have been left exposed to the harsh wet weather as efforts by the Harare City Council to spruce up bus terminuses across the city have delayed.
In March this year, Harare City Council spokesperson, Mr Michael Chideme promised that the refurbishment would commence before this year’s rainy season, but up to now there is nothing tangible.
Passenger Association of Zimbabwe president, Tafadzwa Goliati, blasted the local authority for failing to spruce up terminuses.
“The Harare City council promised to address the issue of refurbishing the terminuses, but they are taking ages and we do not even know when the problem would be solved,” he said. “As it stands, it seems the city fathers have no answers to problems affecting the city.”
Greater Harare Association of Commuter Omnibus Operators secretary-general Mr Ngoni Katsvairo said they were not getting value for their money.
“We are not getting any services at ranks at all, just look at their state, the deplorable toilets and lack of garbage collection,” he said.
The city has five terminuses in the CBD — Market Square, Copacabana, Simon Muzenda Street (formerly Fourth Street), Charge Office and Rezende Street.
These terminuses lack roofs on the waiting sheds and properly functioning toilets. The few shelters still standing have been stripped of their roofs, while metal bars that used to hold them together are falling apart.

All schools will open on January 4 for the first 2021 term including Form Four pupils who will be expected to finish their examinations which spilled into 2021 due to the outbreak of Covid-19.
This time there will be no phased opening.
The opening is for all classes except pupils enrolling for Form One and Form Five who will wait for examination results.
Those going into Form One, who are Grade Seven this year, started writing public examinations last week on Thursday and will finish on 17 December.
Those writing Ordinary Level examinations will have some of their papers overlapping into early next year.
Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Director of Communications, Mr Taungana Ndoro said there are no changes in the 2021 school calendar.
“The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education would like to set the record straight that schools will open on 4 January 2021 and not in a phased approach as has been announced on Sunday by one news report.
“Schools will open on 4 January and secondary school classes opening are Form Two, Three, Four and Six,” said Mr Ndoro.
The Mbuya Nehanda statue project is essentially about remembering and paying respects, as a nation, as a people, to an ancestor whose contribution to our unfolding history deserves recognition.
Of course there are many such personalities in this country’s history but we have to start somewhere.
Nehanda is a spirit who operates through mediums.
There are known mediums of Nehanda before Nyakasikana inasmuch as there are some after her. Currently there are several claimants, dotted around the country.
The fact that we have a medium through whom we then interact and get guidance from Nehanda the spirit means that the spirit has personified itself through its medium.
We can represent the spirit through its medium. The medium is our means to the spirit.
If we therefore want to respect the spirit and to immortalize it through honoring by way of erecting a statue, we represent the spirit through its medium.

Mbuya Nehanda is not being turned into a God because of the statue.
As Zimbabweans, the statement we are making is that we’re thankful to Mbuya Nehanda for the courage and sacrifices she made through her spiritual leadership of the First Chimurenga and we want present and future generations to to remember those contributions and be inspired by them as they also become citizens who contribute to the common good.

The statue project commenced after relevant and appropriate procedures and protocols had been followed.

Rescue operations at Ran Mine in Bindura where at least 10 miners were trapped in a disused mine shaft two weeks ago have stopped after the tunnel continued to collapse.
Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando said Government will soon move in to ensure that all mining activities were undertaken in accordance with the law in a safe manner.
This comes after a number of mine disasters have occurred in the past year because of illegal mining.
Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo who visited Ran Mine on Saturday, said search and rescue of the trapped had become difficult and Government will take a relief approach.
“This tragedy was attended by several ministries, including the technical ministry of Mines and Mining Development, engineers, provincial and national civil protection unit,” he said.
“Our first mode of operation is to search and rescue. We lost one volunteer and we retrieved one person. The situation has gone worse because of the incessant rains and the ground has become sensitive and it is collapsing.
“Some of the families are here and we might move into the relief situation. We must move into the relief approach which include psycho-social understanding of what has happened and work with the families.”
Chief Government Engineer Michael Munodawafa said rescue operations at the mine had stopped after the tunnel collapsed.
“The area where we pumped out water collapsed and we are trying to find a better way of dealing with the situation due to the instability of the ground,” he said.
“This is an old mine and at the bottom there is a deep void filled with water, in mining we call it an open stope. When the initial collapse happened, that is why water came up instead going down. De-watering of the tunnel released pressure and contributed to the continuous collapse.”
Vaccines are used as a preventative measure to prepare immune systems to fight off diseases and ideally prevent further infections but treatments are typically used when patients are already sick with a certain disease.
The clinical pharmacologist, who cannot be named as yet due to contractual obligations, lectures part-time and is a research fellow at the Durban University of Technology.
The professor told the Sunday Tribune the drug, known by the identification tag HIM20, was developed in May but was not yet available to the public as it was going through a second round of testing.
“It underwent clinical trials from May to November and was administered to 133 Covid-19 positive patients who presented at least three symptoms. 98.2% of patients were clear of all symptoms within 96 hours of initiating the drug therapy. Side effects were minimal in that 4% of patients presented with minor nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea,” he said.
The professor had a team of five doctors and pharmacists who assisted with the clinical trial.
They monitored compliance, side effects, adverse reactions and determining pharmacokinetic profiles of the drug.
The professor used his own funds for the research which was conducted under the auspices of the research company – I.M. Chemical Corporation.
“Covid-19 is triggered by the virus Saes-cov2. Thereafter it presents predominantly as an inflammatory disorder so signs and symptoms presented are consequences of inflammatory processes within the body. Common examples are fevers, sore throats and body pains. The question then arises – should anti-inflammatory drugs play a major role? The answer was a resounding no. My research proved the opposite to be true and this is what led me towards the synthesis of HIM20,” they said.
The clinical pharmacologist said patients above the age of 65 taking anti-inflammatory drugs for a host of conditions like rheumatoid arthritis were significantly more prone to contracting Covid-19.
“The body has a large number of inflammatory mediators and they are classified as cytokines. Common antiinflammatory drugs block one to two inflammatory mediators. Once a patient contracts Covid- 19 the body is flooded with inflammatory mediators, producing coronavirus symptoms. This flooding is referred to as the cytokine storm. Any Covid-19 treatment must have the capacity to block this storm,” he said.
They said the molecular design of HIM20 was to block the release of multiple inflammatory mediators amongst other effects.
“But with that said, 1.8% of patients did not respond to the HIM20 treatment. Two-thirds of these patients were diabetic. This group included diabetics. There seemed to be some yet unknown mechanism at play in these patients that prevented the therapeutic effect of HIM20. The other one-third of non-responsive patients were over the age of 74,” they said.
The clinical pharmacologist said two patient groups formed part of a second study to use HIM20 as a preventative against Covid-19.
“The same team is working on the second study and HIM20 will become available once our study and the registration process is completed.”
Speaking on the recent global developments on Covid-19 vaccines, the professor said data was still limited which made things difficult.
“A vaccine is purely prophylactic and once a patient has contracted Covid-19, the vaccine is useless. Also, the current iterations of Covid-19 vaccines are not orally effective and must be injected. But HIM20 is orally effective and may be self-administered.”
Eleven vaccines are currently in clinical testing with nine already entered in a partnership with COVAX.
The country currently hosts clinical vaccine trials by Johnson&johnson alongside a partnership between Astrazeneca Plc and the University of Oxford.
On Thursday President Cyril Ramaphosa reiterated the country’s engagement with the World Health Organization’s Covid-19 Global Vaccine Access Facility initiative.

AN 80-year-old granny died after strong winds that ravaged Gokwe North destroyed her house and left about 100 people homeless.
The granny, who was admitted to Gokwe District Hospital, died from injuries sustained after the house collapsed on her last Friday.
Schools and a clinic where not spared by the storm.
Gokwe North District Development Coordinator (DDC) Mr Martin Musakanda who also chairs the district civil protection unit (CPU) said the mishap follows heavy rains that have been pounding the country in recent days.
“The storm accompanied by strong winds destroyed infrastructure across the district. We have a granny who passed on after a house fell on her. A 15-year-old girl who was also injured when the house she was in collapsed, is recovering well at hospital,” said Mr Musakanda.
He said six schools had their roofs blown off by the strong winds.
“Tafara, Zvanaka, Tenda, Mutakayi, Chiwodza, Budiriro and Vhumba primary schools as well as Gumunyu High School, had roofs of their classrooms blown off,” he said.
Mr Musakanda said more than 100 people were left homeless after their homes were destroyed by the violent storm.
He said value of the property destroyed is estimated to be US$514 000.
“We have since sent a report to the national CPU and we are waiting for their response” he said.
Mr Musakanda said his committtee was mobilising resources to put up temporary shelters as well as provide food to affected families as it awaits further instructions from Government.
“We have mobilised tents and will use some classrooms to accommodate some of the affected people.
“We have since engaged development partners who are willing to come on board to assist us,” said Mr Musakanda.
Gokwe is flood prone and Mr Musakanda said his committee was on alert.
Meanwhile, a 42-year-old woman under Chief Tshitshi in Mangwe District of Matabeleland South Province was struck and killed by lightning last Tuesday.
Acting Matabeleland South Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Lista Mlalazi (42).
“The woman was coming from a women`s club meeting and was about 50 metres away from her homestead when the lightning struck,” she said.
The ruling Zanu- PF Secretary for Women’ League, Mable Chinomona has bemoaned lack of participation of women in the ongoing District Coordinating Committee (DCC) elections.
In the DCC elections, positions up for grabs include Secretary for Legal Affairs, Gender and Culture, Education, Information and Publicity, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment among others.
The ruling party suspended the elections for position of Secretary of the Veterans of the liberation struggle as it is still in process of coming up with structures at district level.
Other positions not being voted for are Secretary for Youth and Secretary for Women Affairs.
Chinomona said Emmerson Mnangagwa has been advocating for women empowerment, a development she said should have encouraged more women to contest the DCC elections.
She said the DCC elections were a platform for women to take leadership matters to a new level.
Chinomona said there was a need for the league to engage women and as such workshops will be held to educate women on the importance of taking up leadership positions in all sectors of the economy.
Addressing a Press conference in Gweru at the weekend, Chinomona said women have continued to confine themselves to the periphery in the party while men continue to occupy influential positions.
“There is a tendency to believe that the chairmanship position is for men and what is painful is that women have accepted this,” she said. Chinomona said it was high time women take up influential positions and take the lead.
“There is fear among women to contest their male counterparts for positions in the party and what has worsened the situation is that most women lack resources to campaign. Women should take up positions not just in the party but also in different sectors of the economy like mining and agriculture,” she said.
Chinomona said President Mnangagwa was pro women empowerment and urged women to take advantage of the Government stance.
“President Mnangagwa is pro women empowerment and it’s unfortunate that women are not voting for other women despite constituting 52 percent of the population. We will continue to engage women at workshops to encourage them to be active and contest positions in the party and the economy,” she said.
Chinomona also urged women to venture into businesses in order to empower themselves and stop depending on men for livelihoods.
“We want a situation where women can campaign using their own resources and get these positions,” she said.
Acting Zanu PF spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa said few women had submitted CVs for DCC posts.
He said the revolutionary party was worried about the low numbers and urged women to contest the elections.
Meanwhile, Chinamasa said the DCC elections had spilled into yesterday because of logistic problems following heavy rains across the country. – Herald

Heavy rains that have been falling in Victoria Falls since Saturday have exposed the municipality’s poor drainage system after flash floods swept through houses and destroyed roads in Mkhosana suburb.
While no fatalities or serious destruction of infrastructure have been reported, residents lost groceries and other property that got submerged in water which in some cases was at knee level.
Some were stuck indoors as they could not go out of their houses which were literally marooned. There are few storm drains in Mkhosana and water flows on the surface whenever it rains. Poor drainage is a major concern which residents even raised during budget consultation meetings.
There is also concern about random littering as garbage including diapers, plastic bottles and papers have blocked storm drains. The worst affected is ward 11 in Mkhosana suburb where most of the road network is not tarred.
Residents raised concern after roads and some houses were flooded. A news crew visited some of the affected sections of the suburb and observed that some roads were flooded.
Several houses were literally marooned as a result of storm drains that have been blocked by litter and sand.
Some residents were digging trenches to redirect water from their houses while others were using rubbish bins and containers to scoop the water. Residents sent an SOS to municipality management on Saturday.
Similar rains were experienced yesterday morning thereby worsening the situation. This comes as the Meteorological Services Department has predicted countrywide rains and emphasised the need for caution.
Council management and engineers visited some of the affected sections to assess the situation. The Chronicle was told that residents’ property was damaged as a result of the flooding.
Victoria Falls Combined Residents Association chairman Mr Kelvin Moyo blamed council for not being proactive.
“There is a need to prepare for the rain season. Council should clear storm drains before the rains. We are going towards getting city status and we are experiencing signs of lack of competence as far as service delivery is concerned which is worrying,” he said.
During the municipality 2021 budget consultation meetings residents complained about poor drainage and implored council to set aside funds to construct storm drains and surface roads especially in Mkhosana.
Ward 11 councillor Edmore Zhou said the town has never experienced such flooding before. “The situation is bad and this has never happened hence no one was prepared.
“We visited some of the affected places and the challenge is the drainage system which needs fixing.
“Our biggest problem in Mkhosana is the gradient which doesn’t allow water to flow down to Chinotimba and all the rain water drains towards VID side and houses in the area get flooded. There is a need for storm drains,” said Cllr Zhou.
He said construction of storm drains and water reservoirs should be a priority in Mkhosana. Cllr Zhou also urged residents to take precautionary measures to avoid damage to property or loss of life.
“We visited the affected areas with engineers and we wish something can be done as a matter of urgency. While the council is trying to work on a solution, residents should also try to protect their property by blocking water from flowing into houses,” said the councillor. -Chronicle
ABOUT 330 blank stamped fake Covid-19 certificates were recovered by police from two suspects at Chirundu Border Post, as law enforcement agents intensify operations to weed out criminals engaging in fake documents.
The two suspects are Simbarashe Tsetse (24) and Freddy Katamanga (31).
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests in a statement.
“They were arrested on December 3, 2020 for originating fake Covid-19 certificates for travellers at Chirundu Border Post,” he said.
“The suspects were arrested after a tip off from members of the public, leading to the recovery of 334 blank stamped Covid-19 certificates, two tubes containing glass capillaries, two testing kits, two receipt books, three plastic capillaries, Covid-19 test record register, methylated spirit bottle and one packet of new needles in their office at Self-Med Complex.”
Asst Comm Nyathi said the duo had no medical qualifications and had just received US$120 from two complainants who intended to cross the border.
Following an investigative article published by The Herald recently exposing some individuals working at Harare Central and Chitungwiza Central hospitals for issuing fake Covid-19 certificates, police vowed to investigate and bring to book all those who engage in the illegal practice.
According to the Zimbabwean regulations following World Health Organisation guidelines, travellers must produce a PCR Covid-19 clearance certificate issued by a recognised health facility within 48 hours before leaving the country.
Most institutions charge around US$65 for the required PCR test for Covid-19, a test that is required within 48 hours before leaving the country by road or air.
To avoid the inconvenience or to cut costs, some wishing to cross the borders have resorted to paying US$20 bribes to health staff in order to be issued with a fraudulent certificate showing they tested negative to Covid-19.
Cross-border traders, job-seekers and others desperate for cheaper certificates are the major clients of the corrupt cartels.

Three miners died last week at Kunyu Mine in Mudzi after they were crushed by two ore wagons which fell into a shaft.
Two of the victims died on the spot, while the other died on admission to hospital.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident.
“A mine accident occurred on December 1, 2020 at Kunyu Mine, Banze, Mudzi where three miners lost their lives,” he said. “Two ore wagons fell into an inclined mine shaft and crushed the miners.
“Two of the victims died on the spot while the other died on admission at All Souls Mission Hospital. Investigations into the incident are in progress.”
The incident comes after at least 30 illegal gold miners are reportedly trapped underground at Bindura Ran Mine after the shaft collapsed recently.
Only six miners were rescued at the mine. Early last month, bodies of two of the five miners trapped after a mine shaft collapsed at Task Mining Syndicate in Chegutu on September 8 were retrieved by artisanal miners who were continuing to search for the other three bodies.
The body of Shingai Gwatidzo (20), which was among the two that were retrieved on Saturday was buried at Borgan Villa resettlement area in Mhondoro.
It was in an advanced state of decomposition.
Fellow artisanal miners defied a Government directive to stop the search for the bodies of their trapped colleagues after all hope was abandoned of finding the five alive.
A police officer attached to the CID Minerals Flora and Fauna Unit was also trapped to death when the ground he was standing on carved and gave in at Magobo illegal mining site in Shamva.

Tinashe Sambiri |Zanu PF spokesperson, Patrick Chinamasa instructed the police to arrest and detain MDC Alliance vice president, Hon Tendai Biti, it has emerged.
According to MDC Alliance spokesperson, Advocate Fadzayi Mahere, Hon Biti presented himself to be police after being informed that there was a plan to arrest him.
There are claims that Hon Biti threatened Russian national Tatiana Aleshina.
Advocate Mahere argued Chinamasa literally ordered the police to arrest Hon Biti.
“Zanu PF spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa said the police should arrest Hon Biti.
This suggests that the police received instructions from the Zanu PF spokesperson.
Mr Nick Mangwana also ordered the police to arrest Hon Biti.
When Hon Biti was in police custody, he was denied food.He was also exposed to Coronavirus because the police officers were not wearing face masks. There were no sanitizers at the police station,” said Advocate Mahere.

VILLAGERS in Muchini area of Buhera South have been left in a state of shock following the gruesome murder of three senior citizens, with a 17-year old boy confessing to having committed the crime.
The senior citizens; one aged 86, his 74-year-old wife and her 80-year-old sister were allegedly murdered in cold blood at around midnight on Thursday by the teenager from the same village.
In his confession, the 17-year-old said: “I arrived at around 11pm from a bar intending to kill them because they killed my parents when I was still young.
“I only wanted to kill the man because his wife actually liked me a lot and I do not know why I killed her,” he said.
Buhera South legislator, Cde Joseph Chinotimba who is related to the deceased, said they are yet to come to terms with loss of three family members.
“We are shocked as a family because we can’t even begin to think of what could have gone wrong to this extent of killing three people, especially for a boy as young as 17,” he said.
Police officer commanding Chipinge District Chief Superintendent Kennedy Nyaumwe confirmed the incident, saying investigations were underway. — ZBC.
ZIMBABWE School Examination Council (zimsec) examinations started in earnest last week but some candidates failed to sit due to failure to obtain national identity cards.
John Mhandu (not his real name) missed two of his Ordinary Level papers in Mathematics and Commerce.
“I had registered to write five subjects that I failed last year when I was still a formal pupil. Back then, there was no need for me to have an ID card.
“But I’m now a private learner at a local college and the law requires me to have one. I hoped to have obtained an ID card by now but my plans were derailed by the lockdown. I still hope though that I will be able to write the other three subjects,” said Mhandu.
A ZIMSEC directive makes it compulsory for candidates, particularly private pupils, to produce any form of national identity documents – passport or driver’s licence, in order to sit for an examination.
“The issue of ID cards falls under the Registrar General’s office, we are not sure whether the pupil(s) in question have missed examinations because of the documents or other issues.
“Candidates should be organised enough to get ID cards in time as the law is clear. Without an ID, you will not be allowed into the examination room,” said Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education communications and advocacy director Mr Taungana Ndoro.
However, some pupils currently do not have any of the documents. The Registrar General (RG)’s Department, which issues national identity documents, was forced into a long break due to the global coronavirus pandemic.
Government began a nationwide lockdown on March 30 as a way to curb the spread of Covid-19. The lockdown has since been relaxed with all essential services and registered informal traders now allowed to resume work. But, while noble, the lockdown complicated operations at the RG’s office that was already struggling to meet the public’s demand for crucial national documents.-The Sunday Mail
A MAN here reportedly killed his eight-year-old nephew, dismembered the head and cooked it.
The 22-year-old suspect from Matova Village near Gokomere Mission under Chief Zimuto ,was found by alert neighbours stewing the boy’s head in a pot after barricading himself inside his hut.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the juvenile’s torso was
found stashed in a nearby shallow pool.
“We will release the name of the suspect and the deceased tomorrow (today) but the suspect is in police custody and investigations are underway to determine his mental state,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.
“He was found cooking the boy’s head in a kitchen hut, while the remaining parts of the body were recovered in a shallow pool, wrapped in a mosquito net.
“Investigations are underway.”
According to sources, the incident occurred when the boy, who was in Grade 2 at Matova Primary School, sought shelter from the heavy rains at his uncle’s home on Friday.
The suspect is alleged to have killed the boy before cutting off his head.
A search for the boy yesterday morning led to the recovery of his head after a relative forced his
way into the suspect’s kitchen

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa says sustained attacks by Zanu-PF and the MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe will not break his spirit as he responded to criticism that he is not showing any appetite to fight back.
Chamisa told hundreds of people that attended a memorial service for his late mother at their rural home in Masvingo’s Chiwara area yesterday that his political career was far from over.
“The people’s party cannot be broken.
“Where you try to break it, you are giving it more strength. Where there are cracks, that is where the strength starts.
“Do not underestimate the commitment of the agents of change in Zimbabwe. I want to thank all MDC cadres, you are wonderful.”
Chamisa described himself as a survivor.
“I am a survivor, no matter what they plan. I have always been one since long back when my mother failed to conceive or would always have a miscarriage,” he said.
“She had to hide my pregnancy to the community with coats and jerseys. After seven years of barreness, she later fell pregnant and gave birth to me.
“I did not know about this even when I grew up, until another prophet from a Pentecostal church whom I will not mention by name came to my office when I was now a lawyer.
“He told me about my mother’s challenges falling pregnant and I phoned her in his presence and she admitted,” he said.
Chamisa, who has been criticised for being too quiet and lacking strategy to unseat Zanu-PF, said being quiet was a strategy in itself.
“People ask why I remain quiet in the face of relentless attacks by Zanu-PF and its stooges,” he said.
“If you are in possession of the ball, do not do tactics that will make you lose control. Keep your eyes on the ball.
“A dog that has the bone should not bark, lest the bone falls and it is picked up by others.
“Others ask me why I do not make noise like (popular Ugandan opposition leader) Bobi Wine.
“Let me tell you, he acknowledges my contribution to the democratic struggle here. Every struggle has its own unique tactics. We know the winning formula.
“The victory of the people is confirmed.
“The victory of the people is certain. It is not going to be withdrawn. Do not be afraid, we will get there. We arrived long back.”
Award-winning documentary filmmaker Hopewell Chin’ono has never been one to hold back his opinion.
Even as a young journalism student in the early 1990s, he was not afraid to speak out and demand accountability.
“He sort of kept a record of when a lecturer missed class,” recalls former classmate Njabulo Ncube. “He would say, ‘We came here to learn and lecturers missing classes cannot be tolerated’. At one time, he took the matter to the principal of the college.”
Some 30 years later, the independent journalist and anti-corruption campaigner remains as forthright, a symbol of defiance for many in a country where few dare to protest.
‘Will not be cowed’ On Monday, Chin’ono will appear in court for allegedly inciting public violence following his endorsement of planned anti-government protests in late July.
Chin’ono’s latest troubles began in June after he used social media to expose allegedly corrupt coronavirus-related contracts for the $60m acquisition of protective equipment for healthcare workers. Along with top government officials, Chin’ono and other journalists also linked the son of President Emmerson Mnangagwa to the scandal – allegations denied by both Collins Mnangagwa and the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF), the party that has ruled Zimbabwe since independence in 1980.
“ZANU-PF has noted with concern the systematic well-choreographed and sponsored attacks on the integrity of the first family by unscrupulous characters such as Hopewell Chin’ono this time targeting the president’s son,” spokesman Patrick Chinamasa said at a news conference on July 4. “We are aware that these baseless attacks did not start today but need to stop forthwith.”
It was a chilling warning, prompting Chin’ono to say on Twitter that his “life is now in danger” but also to declare that he “will not be cowed to fear”.
On July 20, less than two weeks before the opposition-organised protests, police smashed a glass door as they raided Chin’ono’s Harare home and took him away, charging him with “incitement to participate in a gathering with intent to promote public violence, breaches of peace or bigotry”.
He spent 45 days in prison. Upon his release in September on bail, he shed light on the poor state of the penal system and prisons in the country, which he likened to “concentration camps”.
Two weeks ago, he was arrested again and charged with contempt of court but prosecutors later dropped the charges. He has since been charged again with attempting to “defeat the course of justice” following his criticism of the country’s National Prosecuting Authority in the case of a gold smuggler with political connections.
“It’s all designed to intimidate journalists,” Chin’ono, who denies all charges, told Al Jazeera. “I am not intimidated. If they do this to me, other journalists will think twice about reporting corruption.”
Unperturbed, he has continued posting to his 172,000 Twitter and 63,000 Facebook followers.
“In 1980 [when Zimbabwe attained independence from Britain], I was 9 years old. Today, I am 49, [and] the same people who told me that I was the future are saying they will be with us until 2030 as they continue to loot everyone’s future,” he wrote on Facebook recently. “I won’t allow my children’s future to be stolen as mine was through corruption, looting and plunder. No.”
‘A brilliant journalist’ Born in Harare on March 26, 1971, Chin’ono entered journalism somewhat circumstantially, he confesses.
At the age of 18, he was commissioned by Prize Beat Magazine to profile Jamaican reggae star Dennis Brown, who in 1989 toured Zimbabwe. Clad in a school uniform, he showed up for an interview with Brown at his Holiday Inn suite in the capital, Harare.
“I spent hours with Dennis and his wife talking about reggae, smoking and drinking,” Chin’one recalls. “It became a big party.”
From those early days onwards, his future career was sort of cut out for him. He enrolled at the Zimbabwe Institute of Mass Communication, where he excelled.
“He is a brilliant journalist,” says Ncube, the current coordinator of the Zimbabwe National Editors Forum. “In college, he was on top of the class and well-liked.”
After graduating in 1993, he left Zimbabwe to advance his studies in the United Kingdom, where he later worked for broadcasters such as BBC and ITV.
He eventually settled back in Zimbabwe in 2007, but the state of his country under then-President Robert Mugabe left him dismayed.
“The economy was totally changed. Prices were unbelievably high and shops were empty,” he says. “The state had collapsed and corruption was institutionalised.”
Propelled by the dire economic situation at home and the impact it was having on Zimbabweans, Chin’ono began filming Pain in my Heart, a compelling documentary on the state of Zimbabwe’s affairs.
“The documentary was a juxtaposition of two stories of a political matter around two people infected with HIV and suffering from AIDS. The other was getting medication from a church while the other could not afford medication,” he says. “The other lived while the other died from AIDs-related complications.”
After the success of Pain in my Heart – which, in 2008, won Chin’ono the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Leadership Award, the Kaiser Family Foundation Award for Excellence in HIV/AIDS Reporting in Africa, and the CNN African Journalist of the Year Award – he set up Television International in Zimbabwe, a news production house, and continued collaborating with international broadcasters for special assignments.
Throughout, he has remained committed to exposing injustice.
“I believe in a society that respects the rule of law, that respects the vote and a society that does not encourage corruption,” Chin’ono says. “Those are my core beliefs.”
On social media, many seem to share Chin’ono’s views, and a cursory scan of comments shows overwhelming support and messages of solidarity. Some offer prayers for protection; others simply write notes of encouragement.
“Brother Hopewell, we can’t thank you enough for the work you are doing fighting corruption in our country,” reads one comment. “Hopewell our hope, corruption destroys lives. My wish is that one day all our people will join hands in fighting evil corruption,” says another user.
Prominent Zimbabwean author Chin’ono himself often takes to social media to criticise the government, but things have not always been so abrasive between him and Mnangagwa’s administration.
When Mnangagwa took over in a military coup in November 2017 and pledged political and economic reforms, Chin’ono, like many other Zimbabweans, threw his weight behind the ZANU-PF stalwart.
“I supported the idea of reforms he [Mnangagwa] was pursuing,” Chin’ono says. “I thought he was genuine and there was no point in criticising the coup itself because it had happened and was irreversible. For purposes of progress, it was sensible to support his reforms.”
“Fast forward to October 2018, I had realised there were no reforms,” he says, noting it was then that he “started making noise”.
In August of that year, six opposition supporters were killed when soldiers opened fire on people protesting against what they viewed as an attempt by the ZANU-PF party to steal tightly contested elections. Meanwhile, Zimbabweans continue to struggle to cope with a deepening economic crisis characterised by sky-high inflation and foreign currency shortages, as well as a devastating mix of a rapidly weakening currency, stagnant salaries and high unemployment.
Human rights campaigners and rights groups have also decried an “unprecedented” clampdown on dissent that has resulted in the arrests of dozens of activists and opposition officials. The government has denied stifling opposing voices.
But just before his return to court, Chin’ono says he will keep up his fight against wrongdoing.
“Fighting corruption is something that we should all do, and it’s not my fight alone,” he says. ‘We don’t have to wait for a moment of inspiration to start fighting corruption. It’s something we should do every day.’
For former schoolmate Ncube, this kind of determination by Chin’ono is nothing new.
“I remember, we had an accommodation problem at the college in those days and he fought for that. We were struggling and yet there were newly built hostels at the college that were yet to be officially opened,” he says.
In the end, under sustained pressure from Chin’ono and others, school officials allocated the rooms to the students.
“I am not surprised he is taking on authorities,” Ncube says.
Professor Jonathan Moyo has revealed that Foreign Affairs Minister Sibusiso Moyo is involved in an extramarital affair with his Personal Assistant who has previously been in trouble with his wife, Loice Matanda Moyo.
In his Twitter thread, Professor Moyo said:
@MinisterSBMoyo‘s PA Lynette Mahlaba has been AWOL from circa Feb 2020 & not seen at the Ministry since lockdown. Staff say she’s training for posting in SA or on maternity leave. Truth is SB lied to wifey that he fired his PA in Feb yet he moved her to a Kuda Tagwirei bldg!
The Kuda Tagwirei bldg is on 11 Argyle Drive, Newlands, Harare. That’s where @MinisterSBMoyo, who has a private office there, has literally been hiding his PA from his wife, under the false pretext that he fired her in Feb; yet she’s still with him on the Ministry’s payroll!
It is an open secret in the foreign affairs ministry that @MinisterSBMoyois in a relationship with his PA. Things came to a head in Feb when SB’s wife said she didn’t want to see the PA at the Ministry. SB then moved her to a Tagwirei bldg, but lied that he had fired her!
It is not clear what work, if any, @MinisterSBMoyo‘s PA has been doing over the last nine months from a Tagwirei bldg; save that she has been drawing her salary from Foreign Affairs, where she is supposed to have been fired by SB; who also has an office in the Tagwirei bldg!
Another blur on Lynette Mahlaba’s extant employment situation is that a CV she posted on her LinkedIn status shows she holds two jobs: one since 2012 as the Project Coordinator at “With Love Foundation”, she cofounded & another (undescribed) since 2014 with Foreign Affairs!
It is no surprise that @MinisterSBMoyo hid Lynnette Mahlaba in a Tagwirei bldg. Since becoming foreign minister, SB has been Tagwirei’s dark business partner. They’ve done dodgy deals, like the SOTIC/NOIC USD 1,2bn scam; in which USD 12m was pocketed as “1% arrangement fee
…..The SOTIC/NOIC scam is relevant to the #SBMoyoSexScandal, as it explains the context in which SB was able to hide Lynnette Mahlaba in Tagwirei’s Newlands bldg for nine months; while she has been AWOL at the Ministry, after SB lied to his wife that he had fired his PA!
After SB hid his AWOL PA at a Tagwirei bldg in Feb he started to criminally abuse his office & to manipulate staff promotion protocols to get his PA who is at PAO level, appointed at Deputy Ambassador level in SA by dislodging Tendai Mudambo in Cape Town, as Consul General!
To dislodge Ms Tendai Mudambo – the Consul General – to aid his AWOL PA marooned in Tagwirei’s Newlands hideout, SB connived with Sifelani Tarwirei, the finance officer & Hilbert Mada, the CIO liaison officer, at the Cape Town Consulate to fabricate a case against Mudambo!
….Just last Tuesday,@MinisterSBMoyo upped the ante against Ms Mudambo, Zim’s Consul General in Cape Town & got Zim’s Ambassador to SA, David Hamadziripi, to go to Cape Town to investigate Mudambo, on charges trumped up by Tarwirei & CIO’s Mada; maliciously prompted by SB!
….When I first raised the #SBMoyoSexScandal here, there was a noisy reaction from SB quarters. Most of it was ignorant & crap. While I understood where
@nickmangwana & @VascoDaGappah were coming from; they were personal & focused on the forest, at the expense of the trees!
Some like @iMisred & @caesarzvayi baldly denied the maternity story & vowed they knew where Lynnette Mahlaba lives. Caesar announced he is her neighbour. But when you are said to be staying at a guest house or a hotel, it does not mean you don’t have a home where you live! As I type this, Harare Mayor @JMafume is in jail without bail, as if he is charged for a capital crime; when he’s alleged to have shown favour to his sister by allocating her a stand. Yet @MinisterSBMoyo is free, having shown favour to his mistress. Why the double standard?
It is capture by Tagwirei for @MinisterSBMoyo to have private offices in Kuda’s Newlands bldg. *It is a crime for SB to keep his “fired” PA on govt payroll, while not doing govt work. *It is a crime for SB to use deceit to dislodge Ms Mudambo to create a vacancy for his PA! SB Moyo is yet to respond to this supposed corruption case. Ironically Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission ZACC is headed by SB Moyo’s wife Justice Loice Matanda Moyo. Source: Jonathan Moyo Twitter
ZRP On Twitter has detailed how a man brutally beheaded a nine year old boy and shaved the head before using it for ritual purposes to get rich.
The incident occurred on Friday. Police tweeted as follows:
The ZRP confirms the gruesome murder of a 9-year-old boy at Matova Village Chief Zimuto, Masvingo on 4/12/20 by suspect Clever Chitiga (22) for assumed ritual purposes. The minor was beheaded using a kitchen knife before the head was shaved in hot water and pounded in a mortar using a pestle.
The head was boiled in a pot in preparation for feasting and the body of the victim was wrapped in a mosquito net before it was submerged in a nearby dam. Meanwhile Police have arrested the suspect and recovered several exhibits.
Members of the public are warned against strange, superstitious and unjustified beliefs for wealth; all perpetrators of crime will be arrested. #notomurder
The unfortunate incident comes a few months after the gruesome murder of Tapiwa Makore suspected to have been murdered by his uncle Tapiwa Makore and a local headman Tafadzwa Shamba. Tapiwa’s young body is yet to be buried as his head and other parts are yet to be recovered.
FC Platinum booked their place in the first round of the CAF Champions League following a 4-1 aggregate victory over Costa Do Sol of Mozambique.
The Platinum Boys managed a 2-0 win in the second leg of the preliminary round fixture played at the National Sports Stadium on Saturday.
Going into the match already leading 2-1 from the first leg, the Zimbabwe champions took a cautious approach and played more defensively in the first half. They never went forward in numbers and relied more on long balls.
Do Sol, on the other end, retained more possession but failed to yield anything out of it.
Nothing changed in the second period and the action only picked up in the later stages of the game.
The visitors’ dominance on the ball all went in vain when they conceded a goal just six minutes before the fulltime whistle. William Stima scored after being set from a freekick just outside the box to break the deadlock.
The Zimbabwe champions came back again two minutes later with a brilliant interplay, their first meaningful passage of play in the second half, but Ralph Kawondera missed the target by just inches.
Do Sol tried to respond but were left exposed at the back when Perfect Chikwende started a quick move and finished it to double the lead in the injury time.
The game ended in favour of FC Platinum who will face the winner between Plateau United of Nigeria and Simba SC of Tanzania.-Soccer 24
High-flying Chelsea are favorites to win the 2020/21 Premier League title, claims Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
The German believes Frank Lampard’s charges, who are unbeaten in nine games and the only team to go for such a number of games without defeat, have been aided by their spending on new signings, which gives them a ‘massive advantage’.
“If I watch football games at the moment then Chelsea, for me, look like favourites,” Klopp said. “They have the biggest squad, great players playing well together after a rusty start – and they are full on,” he told Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool’s meeting with Wolves.
“They have unbelievable opportunities to change in games and make changes from one game to the other – so that is it,” he added.
Chelsea comfortably saw off Leeds United at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud, Kate Zouma, and Christian Pulisic to go top of the table.-Soccer 24
Tinashe Sambiri| President Nelson Chamisa has said Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa and Zanu PF cannot stop the people’s revolution.
Speaking at the memorial service for his late mother in Gutu on Saturday, President Chamisa said he was aware of the Zanu PF leader’s plan to dismantle the MDC Alliance.
According to President Chamisa, the wave of change is not confined to a building.
“They think that they are destroying us, yet they are strengthening us.
A people’s revolution is not confined to a building.Actually the cracks they are creating are fortifying our walls.
I know that they are desperate to annihilate the MDC Alliance,” said President Chamisa.
“Don’t underestimate the commitment of the children of change. The wave of change is unstoppable.
Those who are trying to dismantle the people’s party are wasting their time. We are unstoppable -that’s an undeniable fact. I have seen one CIO guy here, Tino is his name. Tino do your job, go and tell Mnangagwa that we are determined.Yes, we know you guys… ,” added President Chamisa.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is calling on countries and global health partners to step up the fight against malaria, a preventable and treatable disease that continues to claim hundreds of thousands of lives each year.
A better targeting of interventions, new tools and increased funding are needed to change the global trajectory of the disease and reach internationally-agreed targets.
According to WHO‘s latest World malaria report, progress against malaria continues to plateau, particularly in high burden countries in Africa. Gaps in access to life-saving tools are undermining global efforts to curb the disease, and the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to set back the fight even further.
“It is time for leaders across Africa – and the world – to rise once again to the challenge of malaria, just as they did when they laid the foundation for the progress made since the beginning of this century,” said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “Through joint action, and a commitment to leaving no one behind, we can achieve our shared vision of a world free of malaria.”
In 2000, African leaders signed the landmark Abuja Declaration pledging to reduce malaria deaths on the continent by 50% over a 10-year period. Robust political commitment, together with innovations in new tools and a steep increase in funding, catalyzed an unprecedented period of success in global malaria control. According to the report, 1.5 billion malaria cases and 7.6 million deaths have been averted since 2000.
A plateau in progress
In 2019, the global tally of malaria cases was 229 million, an annual estimate that has remained virtually unchanged over the last 4 years. The disease claimed some 409 000 lives in 2019 compared to 411 000 in 2018.
As in past years, the African Region shouldered more than 90% of the overall disease burden. Since 2000, the region has reduced its malaria death toll by 44%, from an estimated 680 000 to 384 000 annually. However, progress has slowed in recent years, particularly in countries with a high burden of the disease.
A funding shortfall at both the international and domestic levels poses a significant threat to future gains. In 2019, total funding reached US $3 billion against a global target of $5.6 billion. Funding shortages have led to critical gaps in access to proven malaria control tools.
COVID-19 an added challenge
In 2020, COVID-19 emerged as an additional challenge to the provision of essential health services worldwide.
According to the report, most malaria prevention campaigns were able to move forward this year without major delays. Ensuring access to malaria prevention – such as insecticide-treated nets and preventive medicines for children – has supported the COVID-19 response strategy by reducing the number of malaria infections and, in turn, easing the strain on health systems. WHO worked swiftly to provide countries with guidance to adapt their responses and ensure the safe delivery of malaria services during the pandemic.
However, WHO is concerned that even moderate disruptions in access to treatment could lead to a considerable loss of life. The report finds, for example, that a 10% disruption in access to effective antimalarial treatment in sub-Saharan Africa could lead to 19 000 additional deaths. Disruptions of 25% and 50% in the region could result in an additional 46 000 and 100 000 deaths, respectively.
“While Africa has shown the world what can be achieved if we stand together to end malaria as a public health threat, progress has stalled,” said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa. “COVID-19 threatens to further derail our efforts to overcome malaria, particularly treating people with the disease. Despite the devastating impact COVID-19 has had on African economies, international partners and countries need to do more to ensure that the resources are there to expand malaria programmes which are making such a difference in people’s lives.”
WHO response
A key strategy to reignite progress is the “High burden to high impact” (HBHI) response, catalyzed in 2018 by WHO and the RBM Partnership to End Malaria.
The response is led by 11 countries – including 10 in sub-Saharan Africa – that account for approximately 70% of the world’s malaria burden.
Over the last 2 years, HBHI countries have been moving away from a “one-size-fits all” approach to malaria control – opting, instead, for tailored responses based on local data and intelligence. A recent analysis from Nigeria, for example, found that through an optimized mix of interventions, the country could avert tens of millions of additional cases and thousands of additional deaths by the year 2023, compared to a business-as-usual approach.
While it is too early to measure the impact of the HBHI approach, the report finds that deaths in the 11 countries were reduced from 263 000 to 226 000 between 2018 and 2019. India continued to make impressive gains, with reductions in cases and deaths of 18% and 20%, respectively, over the last 2 years. There was, however, a slight increase in the total number of cases among HBHI countries, from an estimated 155 million in 2018 to 156 million in 2019.
Meeting global malaria targets
This year’s report highlights key milestones and events that helped shape the global response to the disease in recent decades.
Beginning in the 1990s, leaders of malaria-affected countries, scientists and other partners laid the groundwork for a renewed malaria response that contributed to one of the biggest returns on investment in global health.
According to the report, 21 countries eliminated malaria over the last 2 decades; of these, 10 countries were officially certified as malaria-free by WHO. In the face of the ongoing threat of antimalarial drug resistance, the 6 countries of the Greater Mekong subregion continue to make major gains towards their goal of malaria elimination by 2030.
But many countries with a high burden of malaria have been losing ground.
According to WHO global projections, the 2020 target for reductions in malaria case incidence will be missed by 37% and the mortality reduction target will be missed by 22%.

She said the fire brigade team has since put out the flames while the injured have been taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital.
Schools will once again open in a phased approach next year with only those in Form Four this year returning on 4 January to finish writing their remaining papers.
Other pupils will only return to class in another phased approach with some classes especially Form One expected to start school as late as February 2021.
Those going into Form One, who are Grade Seven this year, started writing public examinations last week on Thursday and will only finish on 17 December.
Those writing Ordinary level examinations will have some of their papers overlapping into early next year. Other non-examination classes will close this term on 18 December and initially the Government had indicated that schools will then reopen on 4 January 2021.
However, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Director of Communications, Mr Taungana Ndoro, told Sunday News yesterday that the ministry will employ the same method of phased opening of schools next year as a way of decongesting and further implementing the Standard Operation Procedures.
He said only pupils who have not finished writing their public examinations will return on 4 January to finish the papers while phased dates for other classes will be announced in due course.
“We are opening schools on January 4 2021 to allow the Ordinary Level candidates to finish their examinations. Other returning pupils will have to come in February most probably after the Form 4 students finish their examinations,” he said.
Mr Ndoro said Grade Seven results will be released early next year but definitely before 31 January.
This comes as the ministry will tomorrow open the online application platform for Form One pupils wishing to be enrolled into boarding schools next year.
The Government introduced the Form One online application in 2016 for boarding schools to plug profiteering by some schools who were making parents pay for entrance tests.
Most schools were now conducting their own assessments for pupils and make them sit for entrance tests after paying money, rendering Grade Seven examinations irrelevant.
Some schools would call many prospective pupils for interviews when they could only enrol a few classes.
“We expect the Grade 7 results to be out before January 31. The Form 1 pupils will enrol after the Ordinary level candidates have finished their examinations. The idea is to continue decongesting our schools and following the Standards Operation Procedures amid the Covid-19 pandemic. We will have a phased schools reopening,” said Mr Ndoro.
According to a circular released last week by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the online platform will run from tomorrow to 31 January.
Under the method, pupils have to apply through the Electronic Ministry’s Application Platform (EMAP) where an applicant is allowed to place three applications at each given time although there is room for the upward review of the number of applications accepted until the closing date.
“The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education will be launching online the Electronic Ministry’s Application Platform (EMAP) for Form 1 boarding place enrolment from Monday 7th of December to January 31 2021.
An applicant is allowed to have three maximum active applications at any given time in order to decongest traffic on the platform. The schools will notify the successful applicants through sms. Once offered a place by a school an applicant can decline it and once declined a place cannot be reclaimed back.
The enrolment will start after the official publication of the 2020 Grade 7 Zimsec results,” reads a statement from the ministry.
This year, following premature closure of schools in March as a preventive measure against Covid-19, the Government introduced a phased approached to schools opening where Phase One of the reopening was on 28 September and was meant for the Grade 7s, Forms 4 and Upper Sixth followed by Grade 6, Form 3 and 5s on 26 October under the second phase.
In Phase Three, schools opened on 9 November 2020 with the rest of the learners which covered ECD A and B, grade 1,2,3,4,5 and Forms 1 and 2.
However, an industrial action by most teachers affected learning resulting in the Government taking a decision to postpone some of the public examinations into next year.
Reopening of schools were, however, affected when about 300 schoolchildren at various schools contracted the virus. Mr Ndoro said the disease has been contained at most schools with 50 percent recoveries recorded in the past few weeks.
The hardest hit school was John Tallach High in Ntabazinduna, Matabeleland North Province where about 185 pupils and teachers tested positive. However, the situation has since been contained.
By A Correspondent- Zanu PF secretary for administration Obert Mpofu and his wife Sikhanyisiwe, a Matabeleland North Senator, are said to be in a stable condition after they both tested positive for coronavirus.
According to the party’s acting spokesman Patrick Chinamasa, the couple is self-isolating separately in Harare.
Reports on Saturday had claimed that Mpofu and his wife were both admitted at a hospital following their COVID-19 diagnosis.
Mpofu and his wife are the latest high-profile figures to contract the virus, after the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Finance, George Guvamatanga was hospitalised for an extended period of time due to COVID-19.
The disease has been blamed for the death of freelance journalist Zororo Makamba in March; lands and agriculture minister Perrance Shiri in July and ZBC reporter Janet Makamba on Saturday.
By A Correspondent- A Zvishavane woman has been arrested for allegedly marrying another man while her marriage to her first husband was still in force.
Moreblessing Maridza (41) of Platinum Park in Zvishavane appeared before the local magistrate, Archie Wochionga facing bigamy charges last week and was convicted on her own plea of guilty.
She was sentenced to six months in prison, however, three months were suspended on condition that she pays a fine of $5 000.
The other three months were suspended on condition on she does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
Maridza told the court that her first husband, James Chivandire is mentally challenged and has failed to be intimate with her for the past 12 years.
The court heard that Maridza and Chivandire wedded under Chapter 5.11 of the Marriage Act which prohibits a man or a woman from marrying more than one spouse.
In 2012 Maridza went on to marry a second husband, David Mhuru and wedded him under the same Marriage Act and the two started living together.
The matter only came to light in September when an officer at the Registrar-General’s office observed that Maridza had two valid marriage certificates.
The State proved that Maridza married and wedded Mhuru while fully aware that she was legally married to Chivandire under Marriage Act Chapter 5.11.-statemedia
President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government is under pressure to resolve complications arising from episodes such as the Gukurahundi atrocities in Matabeleland and Midlands, election violence and Operation Murambatsvina.
Siphosami Malunga, the executive director of the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (Osisa), will deliver the NTJWG’s highly anticipated lecture from between 10:00am and 11:30am.
Yassin Nhara, who is part of the NTJWG’s secretariat, will host the lecture and Thobekile Matimbe, a community manager at Paradigm Initiative, a civic organisation which promotes digital rights and inclusion in Africa, will moderate the plenary session of the lecture.
This year’s lecture will be held under the theme, “Hate speech and its impact on transitional justice”.
NJTWG vice-chairperson Paul Themba Nyathi said the theme was carefully selected because to achieve reconciliation in any environment full of past hurt and pain, there was a need to use constructive language.
“Hate language will worsen feelings of the hurt,” Nyathi said.
“Words have the capacity to instigate people into violence and at the same time, words can inspire people to unite forgive and forget.
“Hate speech is responsible for all the disasters we have experienced in the world.
“In Rwanda, it took one person to describe another tribe as cockroaches and one million people were dead in 100 days.
“Gukurahundi took someone to use uncomplimentary language to instigate violence and cause the murder of 20 000 people.
“Things do not just happen, they take some careless language and in countries with ethnical diversity, use of language should be well thought out.”
At the height of Gukurahundi, politicians such as the late Robert Mugabe and Mnangagwa were accused of using hate language to fuel the conflict.
Mugabe referred to then Zapu leader Joshua Nkomo as a snake. Zapu officials and their supporters were the targets of the army killings.
Mnangagwa, who was Security minister at the time, referred to “dissidents” as cockroaches that needed a deadly pesticide to be exterminated.
Malunga is a Zimbabwean human rights lawyer with extensive experience in transitional justice and governance in Africa. He has been the Osisa executive director since 2013.
He holds a law degree from the University of Zimbabwe obtained in 1994 and a Masters in International Law from the University of Oslo, Norway, in 2007.
Malunga began his career with law firms in Zimbabwe before moving to Botswana.
He later joined the Department of Peacekeeping Operations in the United Nations’ Transitional Administration in east Timor in 2000 as an advisor to the Transitional Justice minister and later as senior defence trial attorney with the UN Serious Crimes Panel.
From 2003 to 2006, he worked with the UN in Afghanistan to rebuild the justice sector and later moved to the United Nations Development Programme’s Governance Centre in Oslo where he led the United Nations Development Programme’s efforts to integrate conflict prevention in demographic governance policy and programming.
He was the senior governance advisor and regional programme manager for the Regional Bureau for Africa.
He later moved to Johannesburg to work under the United Nations Development Programme’s east and Southern Africa office until 2011 when he took up his current position.
SOME Zanu-PF members yesterday boycotted voting in the party’s district coordinating committee elections after names of their preferred candidates were removed from ballot papers under controversial circumstances.
The voting commenced very late in most parts of the country because of delays in the delivery of voting materials.
There was drama in Marondera after party members from wards 10 and 11 in Marondera Central refused to cast their votes after realising their candidate Lawrence Katsiru’s name was missing on the ballot paper.
In Goromonzi some Zanu-PF members also failed to locate the name of their preferred candidate, Bornface Mutize, on the ballot papers.
Both Katsiru and Mutize were eyeing the chairmanship posts in their respective areas.
A survey in Marondera east and West constituencies showed that ballot papers arrived after 4pm when some of the voters had already gone home.
There was also chaos in Chiredzi after hundreds of voters were turned away as their names did not appear in the voters’ roll.
By midday most ballot papers were still being photocopied at various locations.
In Mashonaland West, polling had not started by 5pm yesterday afternoon, with rival camps at the party district office where ballot papers were being sorted, with names of some candidates missing.
Voting started late in most districts of Mashonaland Central as most areas took time to vote due to poor logistics.
Politburo member Josiah hungwe said voting would continue today in Muzarabani, Guruve and Mbire where heavy rains disrupted the voting process.
There was chaos in Bindura after some candidates distributed flyers to voters giving out a list of their favourite candidates.
Zanu-PF spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa was not picking calls yesterday.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga are looking for the driver of a truck following the discovery of a stolen Ford Ranger double cab bakkie hidden in a load of traditional brooms on a truck heading to Mozambique via the Lebombo border post.
Mpumalanga SAPS provincial spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli confirmed that the video of the white Ford Ranger, which has gone viral on social media platforms, occurred on Saturday afternoon.
“It is believed that the driver was intending to cross the border to Mozambique with the stolen car. According to [SAPS] reports, the police at the border were busy with their duties when they noticed a suspicious white truck with Mozambican registration number plates fully loaded with traditional brooms,” said Mdhluli.
“The car track company activated their system and picked up a signal pointing to the truck which led to the search and recovery of the car. The police appreciate the partnership that exists between the SAPS and the car track company which has resulted in the recovery of many vehicles,” he said.
A stolen Ford Ranger bakkie was intercepted by the South African Police Service at the Lebombo border post with Mozambique. Photo: SAPS (Twitter) “The driver [of the parked truck] was not available and members got information that he had gone to SARS [South African Revenue Service] offices to complete certain documents required when crossing the border with goods,” said Mdhluli.
“Members then went to look for him at the SARS offices but they could not find him and they began searching the truck. While removing the traditional brooms they [police officers] discovered a white Ford Ranger with false registration number plates.”
Police checks on the bakkie revealed that it was reported stolen at a garage in Sandton in Johannesburg in Gauteng on November 30.
THE families of six illegal miners, including four from one family, that were trapped underground when a mine collapsed in Matshetshe, Esigodini, will conduct a burial ritual at the site, as authorities have decided it would be too dangerous and costly to attempt any effort to retrieve the bodies.
Nkosilathi Ndlovu (29), Christopher Dube (23), Ndumiso Dube (19) and Blessed Ncube (24), all members of one family, were trapped alongside Nduduzo Ntini (28) and another miner only identified as Mlilo when a flash flood triggered a collapse on their illegal mining claim on 10 November.
Families of the six have seen hopes of a rescue dashed when a rescue effort was abandoned 11 days after the tragic disaster as the mine was flooded, making it too risky to proceed with the operation.
Hopes of a retrieval have also since faded, with Chief Government Mining Engineer, Engineer Michael Munodawafa noting as part of his observations after a study of the area that it was too dangerous to attempt any rescue operation.
“The debris caught up within the shaft 1 headgear (more than 1m height) suggest the shafts were at one time entirely flooded and thus it can be deduced that water inundation underground and depreciation of oxygen occurred.
“The area is unsafe to conduct any rescue operation as it is characterised with friable ground, loose rock material and debris posing danger for further collapse. A visit on the seventh day showed some further collapse on both sides of the trench and inside the radius of the shaft,” he said.
Eng Munodawafa noted that if an effort to retrieve the bodies was initiated, it would take over a year of continuous work before any fruitful results were realised. Furthermore, indications are that the mine, forfeited by its previous owner in 2013, was operating illegally.
“Some debris surrounding the shafts was washed into the two shafts filling them up. Going by the assumed shaft depth of 60m, any excavation to the mine bottom would entail opening up more than 100m diameter pit from surface, excavating 160 000 cubic metres (450 000t) of rock and more than one year and two months of continuous work. The excavated material should be dumped out of the dam reservation area.
The said Patridge NWC mine registration number 35541 was forfeited on 15 May 2013 and is located at the site where the accident occurred approximately 1,5km north west and there is no way a mine claim could have been registered across the river and within a dam reservation thus the deduction that any mining was illegal,” he said.
As part of his recommendations, he exhorted that the families be allowed to carry out burial rituals at the site.
Eng Munodawafa recommended that no further action be taken with the families of the deceased encouraged to conduct their burial rituals at the site. In addition, he recommended that the alleged owner of the mine, Ms Sakhile Ndlovu, be prosecuted for operating illegally and for her actions in the aftermath of the mine collapse.
When Sunday News visited the site of the collapse last month, villagers expressed outrage at Ms Ndlovu, who they said had delayed rescue efforts by denying ownership of the claim while she hastily pulled down evidence of any mining activity.
“The area of the accident to be back filled so that there is no further access by illegal panners in the future. Relatives of the deceased (need) to be allowed access to the scene of the accident for the purpose of seeing the place and doing rituals before or after backfilling. The purported owner Sakhile Ndlovu needs to be prosecuted for carrying out illegal mining, tampering with the scene of the accident prior to the investigation and negligence which resulted in the death of the six miners,” he said.
Speaking to Sunday News, a distraught Ms Moddy Ndlovu, who lost a son and three grandchildren in the accident, said the family was yet to conduct any burial rituals despite the fact that they had access to the site.
“Nothing has happened since that time when we went to try and initiate some kind of rescue mission for the boys stuck down there. The last time we were told that there would not be any attempt to dig them up because the place is dangerous and there might be more accidents if they tried to do any work there. So we were told the collapsed mine would serve as their place of burial.
“…We have not done any rituals to bid farewell to them. We are just moving on and it is painful. We are allowed to go to the site but there is no further communication with any authority and I think that’s the end of it,” she said.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is concerned with the conduct of the police officer as seen in the video that has gone viral on social media. We understand the incident happened at Kwekwe High School where the police officers had gone to conduct an awareness campaign on 3rd December 2020.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police does not condone such conduct during awareness campaigns and investigations are underway to verify the facts with the Kwekwe District Command and Midlands Province. If confirmed, appropriate action will be taken against the member. The police applaud the public for bringing the matter to our attention.
The 48th Plenary Assembly Session of the SADC Parliamentary Forum has unanimously adopted a strongly-worded motion calling for urgent regional action to stop armed insurgents that are destabilising northern Mozambique.
The Plenary is the highest decision-making body of the SADC PF which brings together 15 national parliaments of the SADC region. It met virtually on Friday and Saturday with 14 of the Member Parliaments represented.
Speaker of Zimbabwe’s National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, moved a scathing motion exhorting the Plenary to condemn “the terrorist attacks in the Republic of Mozambique which are threatening the country’s security and sovereignty and undermining efforts to consolidate the rule of law and democracy.”
He noted that the armed attacks had claimed the lives of unarmed civilians, displaced others and damaged property and public infrastructure in recent years.
Adv Mudenda added that the “barbaric attacks” had negatively impacted on the livelihoods of ordinary citizens, especially women, girls and children, many of whom were failing to access health and education services.
He argued that the Islamic State-linked insurgency constituted “a serious threat to regional peace and stability” as well as to international peace and security.
Adv Mudenda called for immediate collective action by SADC in line with the SADC Mutual Defence Pact, and by the African Union, to counter the terrorist attacks.
Angolan Member of Parliament, Josefina Diakite, seconded the motion.
She noted that Mozambique was dealing with a humanitarian crisis due to the terrorist attacks and urgently needed SADC regional solidarity.
“I underline the need for us to stand in solidarity and to fight what is happening against democracy in Southern Africa and destabilising the peace in Mozambique,” she said.
Hon Diakite said the region could not stand idly by while people were being killed, displaced and rendered vulnerable to food shortages and other insecurities.
Noting that acts of terrorism were increasing all over the world, Hon Diakite said SADC MPs had a role to “safeguard peace and prevent these hideous crimes.”
She reminded the Plenary of Resolution 2395 of the Security Council of the United Nations on counterterrorism, and the UN General Assembly on International Co-operation and Information Sharing. The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Eswatini, Hon Petrus Mavimbela, said his country was gravely concerned by the “indiscriminate” terrorist attacks which also affected areas visited by foreigners and investors. He noted that the Islamic extremists had been attacking civilians since 2017 in several parts of Mozambique using explosives and other devices to attack buildings and vehicles while kidnapping other people.
“Europeans and everyone else are viewed as legitimate targets, including those engaged in tourism, humanitarian aid workers, journalists or business people,” the Eswatini Speaker said.
He said in one incident, the Jihadists beheaded scores of men who were participating in an initiation ceremony.
South African MP Honourable Darren Bergman said what was happening in the Mozambique was objectionable but not new.
“The bells were rung in 2014 for us for the first time. It’s a topic that I’m passionate about and I strongly support the motion put before us,” he said.
Hon Bergman suggested setting up of a task team to explore various response options to the phenomenon.
He said the region had people who could offer “great guidance” on responding to the terrorist attacks and held out the Speaker of the Parliament of South Africa, Honourable Thandi Modise — a respected former combatant — as an example of people the SADC Region could turn to for advice.
Advocate Mudenda addresses the 48th Plenary Assembly Session of the SADC Parliamentary Forum in Namibia
Botswana MP Polson Majaga called for “swift” action to “dismantle’’ terrorist networks in the SADC Region.
“This thing will end up in all SADC countries if we take our time or concentrate on Covid-19.
“It’s time we talk to our Ministers of Defence for them to hold a meeting and (share) strategies to combat this terrorism,” Hon Majaga said.
The Speaker of the National Assembly of Namibia, Professor Peter Katjavivi, also supported the motion and pledged Namibia’s full support to Mozambique.
Zimbabwean lawmaker Goodluck Kwaramba said Islamic extremists had “declared an unjust war” on the people of Mozambique and must be stopped.
The motion followed a plea in May this year by Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi for regional help in responding to the terrorist attacks.

A Gwanda couple were tragically killed in a car crash head on with a haulage truck at Mbalabala 60km from Bulawayo on the Bulawayo Gwanda highway on Saturday afternoon.
Shocked eye witnesses told ZimEye.com that the pick-up they were travelling in with a third person slipped on the wet road and went straight on to the oncoming haulage truck.
ZANU-PF Secretary for Administration Dr Obert Mpofu has gone on self-isolation after testing positive for Covid-19.
Zanu-PF acting spokesperson Cde Patrick Chinamasa last night confirmed that Dr Mpofu was in self-isolation at his house in Harare.
“I can confirm that our Secretary for Administration tested positive for the Covid-19 pandemic and has gone on self-isolation in Harare,” said Cde Chinamasa.
He could not provide more information on when Dr Mpofu tested positive.
Dr Mpofu is the latest high-profile individual to test positive for the pandemic with others being Ministry of Finance and Economic Development Permanent Secretary Mr George Guvamatanga, Deputy Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Cde Lovemore Matuke, Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement Deputy Minister Cde Vangelis Haritatos and Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Cde Larry Mavima.
National hero and Retired Chief Air Marshal Perrance Shiri who was the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement Perrance Shiri succumbed to the pandemic on 29 July.
POLICE have arrested two people and confiscated more than 300 blank stamped Covid-19 certificates, as the net closes in on people who are making fake certificates and selling them to travellers intending to cross the borders.
Zimbabwe reopened its land borders last week but travellers are required to present valid Covid-19 certificates obtained within 48 hours. Most laboratories charge around US$60 for the certificates and this has resulted in the mushrooming of scammers who are issuing the certificates for as little as US$20.
National police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the two, Simbarashe Tsetse (24) and Freddy Katamanga (31) were arrested after originating fake Covid-19 certificates for travellers at Chirundu Border Post.
He said the duo was arrested after a tip-off from members of the public leading to the recovery of 334 blank stamped Covid-19 certificates, two tubes containing glass capillaries, two testing kits, two receipt books, three plastic capillaries, Covid-19 test record register, a methylated spirit bottle and one pack of new needles at their offices at Self-Med Complex.
“This is what the police have been monitoring which led to the arrest at Chirundu where two suspects were found with equipment which they were using to issue fake Covid-19 certificates to travellers. The two were in the process of receiving USD$120 from two people who intended to travel to Zambia.
So, we want to warn the public that they must go to Government institutions and medical institutions which have been cleared by the Government and Ministry of Health and Child Care to issue Covid-19 certificates,” he said.
Asst Comm Nyathi said travellers should avoid back yard premises and people who move around committing various offences under the name of Covid-19. “The police will ensure that the law takes its course on anyone found committing criminal acts under the guise of Covid-19.
Those that will be found buying the fake certificates will also be arrested as long as they are aware that what they are doing is criminal which means they are also conniving with those issuing the certificates and certainly the law will take its course,” he said.
Beitbridge District Medical Officer Dr Lenos Samhere said yesterday the Department of Port Health was on the lookout for travellers using fake documents.
He said since the reopening of the borders to the general public mainly motorists and pedestrians they have been intercepting a number of travellers with fake documents at the Beitbridge Border Post.
Dr Samhere said most of the documents had purportedly come from some clinics in the border town though there is none registered with the ministry to offer such services.
“At some point we intercepted travellers with certificates they claimed to have acquired at the district hospital, a time when our Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machine had broken down,” he said.
“As far as we are concerned no laboratory has registered with us to indicate they offer such services as required by our standard operational procedures.
“What should happen is that these labs should notify our Port Health, which will then relay the message to the South Africans to accept their certificates. The same applies with those coming from South Africa, we have names of those authorised to do such tests.”
Dr Samhere said they had agreed in principle with their counterparts at the South African border to exchange a list of approved/ registered laboratories which offer PCR tests. He said only those with PCR tests results would be allowed to leave or enter the country.
Some of the travellers who have been turned away were using results from rapid or antigen tests.
“The position is clear from both countries that we will screen travellers based on PCR results and not any other tests.
Our appeal is that travellers must not lose their valuable money to bogus syndicates,” said the medical doctor.
Dr Samhere said the Port Health department had a verifiable list of approved testing points at various points across the county.
A ZVISHAVANE woman has been arrested for allegedly marrying two men after accusing her first husband of having failed to be intimate with her for the past 12 years.
The matter came to light when Moreblessing Maridza (41) of Platinum Park in Zvishavane appeared before the local magistrate, Mr Archie Wochionga facing bigamy charges last week.
She was convicted on her own plea of guilty and was sentenced to six month in prison. However, three months were suspended on condition that she pays a fine of $5 000 and the other three suspended on condition on she does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
Maridza told the court that her first husband, Mr James Chivandire had become mentally challenged and was no longer capable of performing his duties as a husband prompting her to marry the other man.
The court heard that Maridza and Mr Chivandire wedded under Chapter 5.11 of the Marriage Act which prohibits a man or a woman from marrying more than one spouse.
Chivandire allegedly fell and suffered from mental illness in 2000 and became incapable of performing his duties as a husband.
In 2012 Maridza went on to marry a second husband, David Mhuru and wedded him under the same Marriage Act and the two started living together.
The matter only came to light in September when an officer at the Registrar-General’s office observed that Maridza had two valid marriage certificates.
Maridza said her and Chivandire last lived as husband and wife in 2000 before he became mentally ill.
The State proved that Maridza married and wedded Mhuru while fully aware that she was legally married to Chivandire under Marriage Act Chapter 5.11.
The court heard that sometime in September on a day unknown to the prosecutor, Mr Delphino Chikwanda who is employed at the Zvishavane Registrar-General’s office was going through records when he noticed that Maridza had two registered marriage certificates under Marriage Act Chapter 5.11.
Chikwanda then reported the matter to the police leading to Maridza’s arrest.
By Wilbert Mukori | Ever since Zimbabwe gained her independence in 1980, 40 years ago, the nation has been on a quest for freedom, justice, peace and economic prosperity for all – “Gutsva ruzhinji!” as Robert Mugabe never seemed to tire of saying throughout the 1980s! When the country attained her independence, many Zimbabweans never doubted for a moment that all these things were not just within their reach, they were right in the hands, already.
The people’s first rude awakening was the elections leading to independence on 18 April 1980. While the whole nation had grown to hold the black nationalist clarion call of “One man, one vote!” as sacrosanct, Robert Mugabe and his Zanu PF freedom fighters made it clear that if the party did not win the plebiscite the civil war would continue. And so the people had no choice but to vote to end the war.
indepth…Wilbert Mukori
Zanu PF won the 1980 elections and went to work to systematically erode the people’s freedoms and rights including the right to a meaningful vote and even the right to life.
Some people had argued that Zanu PF’s threat to continue the civil war if the party lost the 1980 elections was just an empty electioneering mantra, the party would have never restarted the war if it had lost the elections. The doubters were silenced by the Zanu PF instigated 1983 to 1987 Gukurahundi massacre. The primary purpose of the massacre was to force PF Zapu, Zanu PF’s main political opponent, to sign the Unity Accord, uniting the two parties creating the de facto one-party dictatorship that has ruled the country to this day.
And so the overwhelming majority of Zimbabweans’ life has been a great disappointment as they have sunk deeper and deeper into economic poverty and denied their freedoms, rights and human dignity. Their pre-independence hopes and dreams for freedom, justice, a fair share of the nation’s wealth and riches are either a long forgotten memory or a mirage, they can see it but forever out of reach.
Zanu PF, the country’s ruling elite, have an explanation why Zimbabweans are poor.
“To this day, our quest to the unhindered right to access and utilise our natural resources continues being hampered. In the case of Zimbabwe, sanctions constrain the realisation of our full socioeconomic potential,” Emmerson Mnangagwa told his audience at the ground-breaking ceremony of the Museum of African Liberation in Warren Park, Harare.
“In the case of other countries on our continent, detractors continue to fund and fuel divisions so that while we fight, the pilferage and looting of our resources goes unchecked. Learning from our history and past, the time has come for us to deliberately and more consciously defend our interests as the people of Africa.”
After 40 years of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption the people know that these are the real causes of the country’s economic meltdown. They can see the sprawling Blue Roof palatial mansion valued at US$ 2 to 4 billion, the epitome of Zanu PF ruling elite lavish lifestyles. After building his C & M mansion, VP Chiwenga bought a fleet of posh cars, bought 45 gold watches, etc., etc.
The ruling elite’s insatiable greed for money and luxuries were all paid for the wealth looted from the nation. Key national institutions like hospitals have been starved of funds; so starved that even referral Hospitals like Parerenyatwa, Mpilo, etc. have regularly run out of even the most basic drugs like painkillers were starved of funds.
Sanctions! Yeah right! How come sanctions stopped government buying painkillers for hospitals but did not stop Mugabe build the US$2 billion Blue Roof, Zimbabwe’s Parthenon temple to corruption and greed.
It was the noble prize physicist Albert Einstein who said “Insanity was doing the same thing over and over again and expect a different result!”
The people of Zimbabwe do not believe the West are holding back the country’s development much less that Zanu PF has solutions to mitigate the sanctions, contrary to the repeated claims saying otherwise. The people know these are all hen’s teeth tales.
After 40 years of corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF misrule and being dragged deeper and deeper into this hell-on-earth; the people are not expecting the regime to be competent and just and to deliver economic prosperity. They are not insane!
“So, why have the people of Zimbabwe done nothing to end the Zanu PF dictatorship and end their oppression and economic suffering?” you might well ask.
The answer is the people have indeed risked life and limb in electing Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friend into power these last 20 years on the understanding they would implement the democratic reforms the nation was dying for.
MDC leaders have had many golden opportunities to implement the reforms, notably during the 2008 to 2013 GNU. Sadly, the MDC leaders have proven to be corrupt and breathtakingly incompetent.
Mugabe bribed Tsvangirai and company with the trappings of high office and the MDC leaders, just as the Zanu PF cronies had done in 1980, betrayed the people’s trust and commonwealth interests.
The people of Zimbabwe trusted Mugabe and his Zanu PF cronies, they viewed them as national liberation heroes and heroines only to be knock down as the liberators turned into the corrupt and ruthless tyrants. They people turned to MDC believing they would deliver the democratic changes the nation was dying for, only to be betrayed again.
The people of Zimbabwe have been knocked down again and again and after each fall it is very hard to get up again! Before they get up again the people are desperate for some assurance their hopes and dreams of freedom, justice, peace and economic prosperity will finally be honoured and fulfilled. It is not too much to ask!
Mnangagwa, just like Mugabe before him is blaming the sanctions for the nation’s problems only because he is the one rigging the elections and responsibility for the looting and will never blame himself. Zimbabwe is a pariah state and it is only the dictator’s voice that is heard but that is set to change.
Zimbabwe’s failure to hold free, fair and credible elections is the root cause of the country’s economic and political problems. MDC failed to implement the reforms; there are competent men and women who will do it. – SOURCE: zimbabwelight.blogspot.com
GOVERNMENT is finalising a nationwide rollout plan for Covid-19 vaccines, amid indications that Zimbabwe could take delivery of a substantial amount of doses next year.
Authorities have been designing distribution and vaccination prioritisation criteria strategies, with two extensive studies to assess the country’s readiness for a rollout having been undertaken.
Zimbabwe has recorded 10 424 cases of Covid-19, 8 754 recoveries and 280 deaths since March.
Chief Co-ordinator of the national response to the Covid-19 pandemic in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Dr Agnes Mahomva, said last week that preparations for deployment of vaccines were underway through a multi-sectoral taskforce working in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO). She said Zimbabwe would not deploy experimental vaccines that have not been properly tested for safety.
“Zimbabwe will only rollout approved Covid-19 vaccines that have been analysed and found to be effective and safe for use,” said Dr Mahomva.
“Government is guided by science when deciding which vaccines Zimbabwe will approve and use.”
Zimbabwe is part of a global ground-breaking initiative led by WHO, known as Covax, which plans to secure and distribute millions of doses of vaccines to African countries, once licensed and approved. The initiative, which seeks to secure at least 220 million doses for the continent, will enable fast and equitable distribution of the vaccines.
Through the Covax initiative, vaccines that pass regulatory approval will be delivered equally to all participating countries in proportion to their populations.
Provisionally, the WHO distribution mechanism will allocate vaccines to all countries until they have enough doses to cover 20 percent of their population.
Zimbabwe has an estimated population of 16 million, meaning the country could potentially get up to 3,2 million doses under the first phase.
The Sunday Mail has gathered that vaccination of frontline health care workers and the elderly who are most vulnerable to the virus will be prioritised when the vaccines are deployed.
In addition to the Covax initiative, Government will mobilisedomestic financial resources to procure additional jabs for the country, said Dr Mahomva.
She said any vaccine authorised by WHO under the Covax facility would have to undergo rigorous regulatory scrutiny by local experts.
“Let me update you on two processes taking place in preparation for vaccine deployment,” said Dr Mahomva.
“There is an important aspect of research which is part of vaccine development and is being led by the National Institute of Health and Research under the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
“Secondly, there are the actual rollout preparations, including resource mobilisation for approved vaccines that have been analysed and found to be effective and safe for use. On this front, Zimbabwe conducted its first baseline readiness assessment on October 13 using the Covax facility template.
“A follow up assessment was conducted on November 26 and both these assessments had the participation of the national Inter-agency Co-ordination Committee on Immunisation and the Zimbabwe Immunisation Technical Advisory Group.”
She said Government led the two studies in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF and Covid-19 vaccination stakeholders.
“Results of these assessments have shown that Zimbabwe has made good progress in preparing for the rollout of a safe and approved Covid-19 vaccine.
“More preparations are of course still in progress.
“These additional preparations include finalisation of both internal funding mechanisms through the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and external funding applications for the vaccine itself and of course for the actual rollout processes.”
She said the preparations are informed by experiences from the country’s Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI).
Added Dr Mahomva: “When Covid-19 was declared a global pandemic, it was clear that there was a need to develop not only safe vaccines but also to ensure that everyone had access to these vaccines. This is because the introduction of vaccines will not end the pandemic if only a few countries have access to the vaccine.
“This realisation pushed WHO, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation and other global leaders on immunisation such as UNICEF to come up with a Covid-19 global access facility — in short Covax, to address this issue.
“The Covax facility led by WHO and GAVI is there to accelerate the development and manufacture of safe and effective Covid-19 vaccines in order to guarantee rapid, fair and equitable access to vaccines for all countries, once of course the vaccines have been confirmed safe, effective and ready for deployment.”
Moderna, a US biotechnology company, has produced a vaccine that it says provides nearly 95 percent immunity against the virus, while another vaccine with almost equally the same efficacy has been produced by Pfizer and its partner BioNTech.
Another vaccine developed by the University of Oxford provides around 70 percent protection. China and Russia already have approved vaccines, but both are yet to complete the final round of tests on people.
Zimbabwe Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) coronavirus/COVID-19 situation report as of 05 December 2020:

Covid-19 has claimed 10 more lives in Zimbabwe, pushing the overall death toll to 291 since the pandemic broke out in the country in March.
Of the deaths, nine were reported by Harare Province retrospectively while one new death was reported by Bulawayo.
This was reported by the Ministry of Health and Child Care in a daily update released this evening.
The deaths come at a time when Zimbabwe is recording a surge in new Covid-19 cases, which hit 667 this week alone.
Today, 70 new cases were recorded, compared to 123 reported yesterday.
Today, 1 577 PCR tests done, implying a positivity rate of 4,4 percent.
Of the new cases reported today, 50 were local transmissions while 20 were returnees from South Africa.
Encouragingly, 46 new recoveries were reported, leaving the national recovery rate at 81,4 percent while active cases shot up to 1 482 today.

Mr Taungana Ndoro
By Jane Mlambo| The United States foreign affairs committee has tweeted that it is closely following developments in the matter in which MDC Alliance Deputy President Tendai Biti is facing charges of assault.
Biti was arrested and detained at Rhodesville police station before appearing at the Harare Magistrates court yesterday.
Yesterday, Zimbabwe recorded 10 Covid-19 related deaths, in what raises fears of a second wave of the deadly pandemic.
According to Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) coronavirus/COVID-19 situation report as of 05 December 2020, Zimbabwe recorded 70 new cases with South Africa returnees contributing 20 cases.
By Jane Mlambo| Exiled former cabinet minister Walter Mzembi has mourned the late ZBC reporter Janet Munyaka who died of COVID-19 describing her as an embodiment of a mother at work.
Posting on Twitter, Mzembi said the late Munyaka interviewed him several times but always reported what he would have said unlike other ‘factional journalists’.
“She was the embodiment of a mother at work , dutiful & from my experience and she interviewed me countless times zvawataura ndizvo zvaaiburitsa unlike some of the factional journalists who were men and women on a mission ! MHDSRIP amongst the patriots,” said Mzembi.
Munyaka’s death has shocked the entire media fraternity who described her death as a major loss to the whole industry.
The Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa, has expressed “great sadness” at the passing of veteran ZBC journalist Janet Munyaka.
“It is with great sadness that we learnt of the passing away of one of the country’s veteran female journalists, Janet Munyaka,” the minister said in a statement.
“I have known Janet for many years and am devastated to learn of her passing. She was a strong, hardworking, accomplished and able journalist.
“The public broadcaster, the journalism fraternity and indeed the nation is poorer without Janet.”
Munyaka (48), succumbed to Covid-19 Saturday evening after being hospitalised at a Harare hospital for more than a week.
Colleagues and friends immediately took to social media to express shock and sadness at her passing, the tragedy coming a few days after indications were that she was recovering.

“On behalf of Government, I wish to express heartfelt condolences to the Munyaka family, her workmates, the journalism fraternity, her friends and Zimbabweans in general,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.”
“May you find solace and comfort in the good work that Janet did for her country. We have lost a great champion, a wonderful person, and a dear friend.
“Janet, you were a role model for up and coming journalists in an environment where few women are recognized. We will miss you, may your dear soul rest in peace.”
Munyaka, who joined the ZBC in 2000, is survived by husband Jackson and their four children.

Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe has warned police officers that they risk being prosecuted if they abuse the right to use firearms.
The statement by the minister comes following the recent High Court order ordering the police to compensate the family of shoot victim Tinashe Choto who lost his life during the January 2019 protests.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has been accused of carelessly discharging firearms resulting in fatalities some of who are innocent bystanders. Speaking in the National Assembly, Minister Kazembe said law enforcement agents should apply as far as possible non-violent means when dealing with unarmed suspects.
He said they should only resort to force and firearms only if the other means remain ineffective or without any promise of achieving the intended result. “Regardless of who commits the crime, no one is above the law, so even police officers can be arrested.
The government policy respects the sanctity of life as enshrined in the Constitution of Zimbabwe, hence our police officers shall continue to uphold this right,” he said.
Section 42 of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act Chapter 9:07 provides that the use of firearms may be authorised in situations where one resists the attempt and cannot be arrested without the use of force or flees when it is clear that an attempt to arrest him is being made or resists the attempt and flees, the person attempting the arrest may, in order to effect the arrest, use such force as is reasonably justifiable in the circumstances of the case to overcome the resistance or to prevent the person concerned from escaping.
Minister Kazembe was quick to add that although there are circumstances allowing for the use of firearms this does not, however, mean that the police will take away the lives of citizens willy-nilly as each police officer is duty-bound to observe the golden rules of the use of firearms which demand that if in doubt do not fire; never use a firearm when it is possible to achieve your objective by other means; or when the immediate object has already been achieved.

A BULAWAYO man is living a “hellish” life at the hands of his abusive wife who is said to be a shebeen queen and allegedly takes pleasure in beating him up.
Raphael Dube from Mzilikazi claimed his alcoholic wife Tapiwa Mhlanga challenges his authority when drunk by frequently beating him up.
Dube, who was seeking a protection order at the Bulawayo Civil Court said whenever he tried to reprimand his wife over her drinking habits and conduct of entertaining a lot of men at home, she turned violent.
Narrating his ordeal, he cited frequent battery and threat to his life as reasons for his prayers for a protection order.
“I am applying for a protection order against my wife Tapiwa Mhlanga and we got married in 2016. She physically abuses me. She also consumes alcohol and unlawfully sells it at our house.
“Whenever I reprimand her about her drinking habits and her conduct of entertaining a lot of men at our house, she becomes violent and insults me. She also tears off my clothes. This happened on several occasions and I have made several reports at Barbourfields Police Station to no avail,” complained Dube.
Dube, who was seemingly sick of living in an abusive marriage, said his wife was also economically abusing him.
“She is also economically abusive as she has been with my bank card for over three years and she doesn’t buy food in the house. I no longer feel safe at home,” he grumbled.
Mhlanga, who was not opposed to her husband’s application instead submitted that he was the one who was the source of their marital disputes because of his infidelity.
“I am not opposed to his application for a protection order but he is the one who is behind the source of our problems. The other time he was working at Turk Mine, he was in the habit of going out with his friends and would switch off his phones. I later discovered that he was having an affair with a neighbour and I saw their pictures in the phone.
“As if that is not enough, I also caught him red-handed naked at Siphiwe Moyo’s house. When I tried to make a report at the police station, they made a counter-one that I had stolen their money amounting to $30. After busting him he approached my parents and asked for forgiveness. I however, forgave him in a bid to save my marriage,” said Mhlanga.
In the interest of peace and order the presiding magistrate Nomasiko Ndlovu granted a reciprocal order which compels the couple to keep peace by not verbally and physically abusing each other.
The magistrate also ordered Mhlanga to return her husband’s bank card.B-Metro
By Jane Mlambo| Opposition MDC Alliance vice President Tendai Biti was yesterday freed on $10,000 bail after spending a night behind bars on charges of assault.
Harare magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti set his trial date for January 18.
The charge against Biti relates to an alleged incident that occurred at the Harare magistrates Court where he was representing one of feuding parties in a land dispute.
Biti, who is also a qualified lawyer, was involved in litigation, representing a client in the Harare Airport Road scandal.
In court, prosecutor Idah Maromo argued that Biti had assaulted Russian national Tatiana Aleshina by threatening her, pointing his finger at her face, shouting insults at the top of his voice, “intending to inspire fear of belief into her mind”.
Biti denied the charge and his party described it as “trumped up”.

Government began a nationwide lockdown on March 30 as a way to curb the spread of Covid-19. The lockdown has since been relaxed with all essential services and registered informal traders now allowed to resume work. But, while noble, the lockdown complicated operations at the RG’s office that was already struggling to meet the public’s demand for crucial national documents.
The department has partially opened, assisting an average of 50 people per day at every station. As a result, some pupils across the country are now being forced to literally set base at the RG’s office for the documents.
“I have been camped here for the past two days. If I do not get the document and in turn fail to write the examinations, it means I will have wasted years of study,” said a dejected pupil who only identified himself as Tatenda.
But the situation gets complicated. Some private learners are yet to reach the required age, by law, of 16 so that they can be issued with national identity cards.
In 2018, the High Court had to come the rescue of a 15-year-old Form Four pupil who was barred from sitting for her Ordinary Level examinations because she did not have a national identity card.
The court ordered zimsec to allow the pupil to write the examinations using her birth certificate.
“It is unfortunate that some of the pupils have already missed their examinations. But, I want to urge our officers to prioritise our school children first in their operations,” acting Registrar General Mr Henry Machiri said.
This is the season of exams and we have made it a point that children who are sitting for exams get first preference even if we are serving a limited number per day. Our office should not jeopardise the future of pupils.”
A visit by The Sunday Mail Society to some registry offices confirmed a crisis at hand. For instance, the Market Square in Harare is flooded as some pupils are travelling from as far as Gutu and Murehwa for the documents. And indications are that the department’s sub-offices are creating an artificial crisis by refusing to serve locals.
Pupils from areas like Chitungwiza, Kuwadzana and Norton are being referred to Harare’s District Registry. “The Kuwadzana sub-office is not issuing ID cards so they have referred us here (Market Square),” said Mhandu.
A pupil from Ruwa, Tendai Karoro, reckons their predicament was due to corruption taking place at the Registrar General’s office.
“I have been here for the fifth time now with no luck. I remain hopeful though that I will get the document before my examinations start next week.
“If their (RG office) operations were transparent, I would have gotten my document by now. However, they seem to have people they favour as some do not even join the long queues,” he said.
Our investigations confirmed that while some pupils are spending days and nights without being served, well-heeled individuals were getting an unfair advantage.
The sad part is bribes are openly being demanded upfront. Informal traders that often operate at the RG’s offices are being used as fronts. They demand bribes of between US$5 and US$10 from document seekers in return for preferential treatment.
“Some of our friends got their ID cards last week before the examinations even started but it was because they had money to facilitate for the quick movement of their papers. Yet this is supposed to be a free service,” moaned Tsungai from Ruwa. The acting Registrar General said they have since instituted investigations.
“We do not expect corrupt activities from the officers and it is not Government policy for these officers to collect money from the public,” said Mr Machiri. -Sunday Mail

Tinashe Sambiri|MDC Alliance (Namibia) has slammed Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa for prioritizing the dead while the living are suffering.
The party also took a swipe at Mr Mnangagwa for abusing Mbuya Nehanda’s legacy.
Read full statement below :
04 DECEMBER 2020
ZANUPF IS A BETRAYAL OF THE LIBERATION DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS OF MBUYA NEHANDA, MDC ALLIANCE NAMIBIA ECHOES.
Mdc Alliance Namibia is absolutely disturbed by Zanupf President’s utterances when he postulated that “This momument represents Nehanda, the spirit medium, who played a crucial role in the liberation struggle that gave us independence we celebrate today”.
In as much as we concur that our heroines and heroes must be honoured for sacrificing their sweat and blood for the emancipation of all citizens from yoke colonialism, we differ in prioritising the dead before improving the livelihoods of those who are alive.
Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa must stop paddling lies through hypocrisy.
As expatriates, we are really infuriated by the pretence from the Zec and Court imposed President who deceives the nation. We completely disagree that there is any independence in Zimbabwe due to the presence of heavy-handedness from a regime that does not respect human rights in the motherland. Mnangagwa said more statues of First and Second Chimurenga heroes will be constructed , including that of the late autocratic Mugabe whom he toppled in a military coup in November 2017. Mdc Alliance Namibia satirises this level Political ineptitude in Zanupf. As social democrats, we expect Zanupf to embrace the revolutionary dreams and aspirations of the liberation struggle. Zanupf must stop its political rhetoric, there is only phoney independence because citizens are scattered around the world seeking economic and political refugee due to gross misgovernance.
Moreover, Mdc Alliance Namibia have raised serious concerns on the Zanupf government’s commitment to construct expensive statues but dismally failing to to finance the needs of desperate civil servants and the general populace who are wallowing in excruciating agony as a result of artificial poverty. Zanupf must halt its hypocritical stance and confront the demand for genuine independence where one man one vote is guaranteed. The fallen heroes and heroines cannot applaud the senseless statues when their people are being butchered every now and then for demanding justice and freedom from Zanupf terrorists. Zanupf President must concentrate on putting the economy on a sounder footing than their extravagance on minor things.
Nehanda was executed in 1898 on charges of murdering Native Commissioner Hawkins Polard in 1896. She was butchered in the same way Mdc Alliance activists and leadership are facing 41 years after independence.
Zanupf must replace their simulacrum of phoney independence with genuine political liberty and freedom after defeating colonialism.
Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa also equated Mbuya Nehanda to Jesus Christ because of her fundamental role fighting for total liberation.
