Zimbabwean Working As A Maid In South Africa Donates Her Salary To Feed Lockdown Distressed Fellow Zimbabweans

Judy Murambinda has given nearly half her monthly salary to other Zimbabweans in need.

Correspondent|A domestic worker in Johannesburg has donated R3 000 of her R7 500-a-month salary to families in distress because of the COVID-19 lockdown.

Zimbabwean national Judy Murambinda used the money to assist other Zimbabweans in trouble. She said immigrants should help each other when living away from home.

Murambinda, who came to South Africa in 2009, was touched by desperate calls for assistance from fellow Zimbabweans who posted messages on social media platform Facebook asking for donations of food and other basic necessities.

She told Groundup that she decided to use R3 000 of her salary to buy electricity and food for gardeners, domestic workers and street hawkers who she said were bearing the brunt of COVID-19 lockdown. Many said their employers were not paying them during the lockdown.

She paid amounts of up to R200 using an e-wallet system.

“I normally donate my monthly tithe to the church but this month I couldn’t do that due to the lockdown. I ended up spending more money than I pay to my church after I received numerous requests from desperate people.”

Beneficiary Nicholas Tapfumaneyi wrote, “Hello people I got assistance through this post.Thanks.”

Nqobile Nepare said,”Thank you Judy, I got help from your post. God bless you.”

Thousands of immigrants are battling to pay for food and rent as they can not go out to work due to the lockdown and they cannot get food parcels which the Department of Social Development only offers to holders of a valid South African identity document.

Emelda Mikayla of Pretoria wrote: “I have run out of cash and food to feed my six-year-old baby. I haven’t eaten for two days and my landlord is kicking me out for failing to pay rent in full. I paid R1 500 and still owe them money. Please assist, I am under stress.”

Empress Mimi Mimzoe from Witbank wrote: “I am in need of any amount for rent. I lost my job recently.”

Murambinda has compiled a database of other people in need of assistance and promised to help if she finds sponsors.

Updated Figures Confirm 11000 Americans Killed By Coronavirus Between Tuesday And Thursday

American flag

Paul Nyathi|COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus, killed about 11,000 people in the United States between Tuesday and Thursday, according statistics website Worldometers.

There were almost 6200 deaths recorded on Tuesday, more than 2600 others on Wednesday and close to 2200 fatalities on Thursday, according to the revised data.

New York City on Tuesday reported 3,778 additional deaths that had occurred since March 11 and had previously been classified as “probable” as coronavirus deaths. The death certificate listed as a cause of death “COVID-19” or an equivalent”.

Between Tuesday and Thursday, there were also more than 90,000 new infections nationwide, an indication that the peak may still be months ahead, as new cases seem to mean that the virus continues to spread rapidly.

In all, the United States had 34,617 deaths and 57,508 recoveries from a total 677,570 infections as of Thursday night, according to the latest data.

The U.S. has recorded more deaths than any other country on earth, even as President Donald Trump continues to brag about the reportedly wonderful job he has done and blames everyone else for his own failures.

On Wednesday, he announced he would be halting funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) for reportedly mishandling the coronavirus crisis.

President Mnangagwa To Meet Chamisa, Khupe, And Mwonzora? | OPINION

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | The president of Zimbabwe joins the whole country including all opposition leaders in praying for Zimbabwe. It is not time to play politics, this virus needs all to come before the Lord. The world is in a locked down mode, life as we know it has changed. Streets are empty and businesses are closed. We are told to stay home and if we must venture out, to avoid touching our face and to wear mask to avoid spreading the deadly Corona Virus. We take no visitors and for once we can tell people not to even think about visiting us. Tens of thousands are dead around the world and hundreds of thousands are sick with no end in sight. Fear is everywhere and individuals scramble to write their last wills lawyers are busy up and down. No one is safe and no social class is immune. The whole world thousands are dead and in New York in the United States the dead are packed in refrigerated trucks. In London mass burials are allowed in the peace times. Fear and anxiety has gripped nations despite our claimed sophistication and knowledge of science. What the Spanish Flu did in 1918 when it killed millions has happened again with the corona virus. In our anguish and our fears we ask why and seek meaning for an invisible enemy that appears meaningless and violent in its ferocity.

As I look outside my window in my neighborhood, however, I can see the signs of life and the coming of spring. The flowers on the trees shake against the breeze in this sunny day. The daffodils in their many colours and shades shake against the wind and in God’s earth these plants announce a new year and the unfolding of a new season.
Perhaps the war vets who have lived through war time can tell you about the angst and worry about survival during a holiday. Humanity is seeing a very rich meaning in this trouble times.

The book of Mathew 21 : 1 – 11 tells of a story. Jesus is approaching Jerusalem and is getting ready to cross the three ridges called the Mount of Olives 2.4 miles outside the city of Jerusalem. As Mathew recalls the event, Jesus called two of his disciples and sent them on an errand. “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me.” (V2). Then one more thing he told the messengers in verse 3 “If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.” Our Lord knew that there will be questions asked and people will need answers. Many commentators have disagreed on this passage. Was there a prior arrangement between Jesus and the owner or did the Lord of the universe foresaw what would happen if the owner of the donkey saw strangers untying his donkey. Many theologians think that this knowledge is supernatural. After all, the Prophet Zechariah had prophesied long ago that the Messiah would enter Jerusalem riding on a donkey. This was the messiah and his entry into Jerusalem that day fulfilled this prophecy.

It all happened as our Lord had instructed and when they brought the donkey back, the people took off their cloths and put on the back of the donkey for Jesus to sit. Those who had no clothes or the poor whose clothes could not withstand the wear and tear that might result, went into the woods and cut branches and put on the road so that the king might ride past. You can imagine the noise and the surprise of people in the city especially since there were many who traveled long distance so they could enjoy and worship during the feast of Passover.

I want to draw your attention this palm Sunday to two things in this old story of our faith: The first is the human need for meaning and the second is the human plea for deliverance and the need to rely on God. Let us first examine the human need for meaning.

The human need for meaning is overwhelming. We must make meaning of actions and events for through this, we make sense of the world. We all as human beings have a set of expectations about life and these expectations allow us to plan. We know time will continue, we will finish school, have jobs, get married, work and retire. All these form what social scientists call the assumptive world. The problem we have is: what happens when things occur and our assumptive world is violated? Where do we turn to when things are no longer the same? It was not different in Jesus’ time. Our Lord knew that questions would be asked and reasons for such actions sought especially since the donkey belonged to someone else. This need for meaning is still strong today and becomes the more pervasive and urgent in a post-modern world where few things make sense. We just push to get on but we merely get by. We wonder what the purpose is to try and be good, organize the community and make our lives meaningful.
As we watch the carnage of this pandemic, it is natural to wonder why and to ask where God is. As we hear about the need to protect oneself we wonder how we can shut ourselves inside without food and basic necessities. Some have lost jobs and means of livelihood in order to stay alive. Our assumptive world seems to be violated. We have lots of questions but very few answers and no one seems to know the right answers. How long will this last? What should we do and where do we turn to? We need to turn to the Lord.

As instructed, the disciples sent to fetch the donkey were simply obeying the voice of the savior. “The Lords needs it” they said. The Lord needs you in God’s kingdom. The Lord needs you to gather the broken pieces of the lives in your community. The Lords need your hands, your hearts and your minds no matter what twisted meanings others may find. The Lord needs all of us. You do not need to go outside and expose yourself to this virus in order to serve your community. You can call others and use social media to stay in contact. The Lord needs you to stop the spread by avoiding gathering in places with close contact with others. A few short weeks ago, a church weekly meeting defied the ban on gathering. as I am writing tonight, many of them are in critical condition in a hospital.

The Lord needs all of us to do our part in curbing the spread. In a letter that the Apostle Peter wrote to Christians who fled Jerusalem to other lands he specifically reminded them that it is Christian duty to obey authority whether it be governors or kings. (I Peter 2 : 13 – 15). This he reminded the church is pleasing to the Lord. If you insist on going to church when the authorities are banning public gathering, you are not serving God.
The second thing I want us to note in the story is the human plea for deliverance. It is common for us humans in difficult times to seek help. It is also possible to ask the wrong people for help and to get false help. This virus has no cure yet someone may try to sell you some snake oil ,anointed Corona virus healing or any strange concoctions.
At the time of Christ and during colonial rule in Palestine, conditions were unbearable. In our time as we are forced to shelter at home and see the world through television reports and our smart phones the fear is overwhelming. Reports of people who are battling the virus or dead are sent to us daily on our phones and smart devices. This virus respects no class and no hierarchy. From the Prince of England to the King of Swaziland from the very poor in public houses in London Hospitals to the poor factory worker in China to the powerful politicians in Law houses, no one is immune. Like those who were under the Roman yoke on that bright day when Jesus rode into Jerusalem we too must echo their cry “ “Hosanna” or save us now.

So in the middle of a pandemic what should we do? The Bible provides some suggestions. Our faith has always endured crisis and those before us had depended on God who has always been our help in ages past and our help in years to come. Consider these examples of what those who lived in fear and angst did on that day and what you can do today.

Have hope do not despair. The ancient took comfort in the word of the Lord. They reminded each other of the words of the prophet Zechariah that God does not forget God’s people. God told the prophet: “Say to the daughters of Zion, behold your king is coming” Do not lose hope, the Lord will come and will take away this scourge and life will return to normal. It was not an accident that the crowd on that day of Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem chose a song often sung during procession to the Temple. It was a song of anticipation of a better day in the future “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord”.The Lord will give us his peace and will provide what we need.

Do not forget to pray. Waiting can take us to God but it is important to remember that it can also take us away from God. With people out of work and not having enough to do at home, there may be temptation to drink excessively. “Your King is coming” the Prophet Zechariah had announced. We cannot wait for the king in a manner that does not honor the sovereign.

Tune out a little sometimes because listening to the news at all times can create fear. Hope should be devoid of fear.

Find something constructive to occupy your time.

You may not have all what you need think about improvising for what you do not have and avoid self-pity. Those who did not have cloths to throw on the donkey and on the road cut branches and participated in the praise.

Use your time indoors to tell the stories of your life to each other.
This virus will come to pass. Indeed it will come to pass.

God bless Zimbabwe. God bless you all. May God heal you and protect you all.
Together we will conquer.

FULL TEXT: Army Response to Beatings Investigation

This correspondence is in response to your media reports as published in ZimEye and NewsDay online publications over the Easter weekend. Your reporters’ allegations and claims are unfounded and blatant lies. These are typical examples of the fake news that the presidency has been condemning recently.

https://twitter.com/ZimEye/status/1251024341342576640?s=19

ZimEye reporter, Farai Dziva’s story alleged that “Police officers and soldiers assaulted residents of the city of Masvingo and stopped them from getting into town to buy mealie-meal.”

NewsDay Weekender reporter, Garikai Mafirakureva, also posted that “Chiredzi residents are now living in fear of army brutality as soldiers patrolling the streets late at night are beating up people and taking some of them to unknown destinations.”

These two stories lack merit on the basis that the alleged victims and/or complainants are not identified. The Army and the Police have always reminded any members of the public to report such incidents. In these instances there are virtually no police reports which casts a lot of doubts about the authenticity of Dziva’s and Mafirakureva’s reports.

https://twitter.com/Jamwanda2/status/1250013699747840000?s=19

The correct position is that the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has deployed troops in the two (2) towns of Chiredzi and Masvingo but they are not conducting any foot patrols. They strictly remain vehicle-borne throughout hence they do not have direct contact with members of the public.

It, therefore, boggles the mind as to which ZNA soldiers are alleged to be beating up people and abusing the residents of these two (2) urban areas when there are no foot patrols to assist the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

Furthermore, the picture used in both publications is an old one captured sometime last year when the troops were on one of their routine physical training exercises, that is, road-runs.

Presidential Spokesman George Charamba comment on the video revealed by ZimEye.com

Please be advised to observe professional journalism ethics and try to avoid peddling fake news which by and large exposes your hidden agendas and equally embarrasses your respective organisations.

The ZNA, therefore, dismisses these fake news reports as complete nonsense.

Kenya Warns Magafuli To Stop Messing Around With The Coronavirus Or Risk Turning Country Into A Graveyard

Tanzania President Pombe Magufuli.

Paul Nyathi|Dennis Onyango, the spokesman of Kenyan ODM party leader Raila Odinga, has sent a chilling warning to Tanzanians over the COVID-19 pandemic.

Onyango said Tanzania, which still remains lockdown-free in the wake of Coronavirus outbreak, will soon be reporting massive cases of the deadly virus, just like the United States of America.

In a tweet on Thursday night, he pointed an accusing finger at President Pombe Magufuli, saying his strange behaviour in the face of COVID-19 would result into Tanzania becoming a graveyard.

Onyango said Magufuli, just like US’s President Donald Trump, has discarded science and decided to play politics with the disease which has killed over 145,000 people across the world.

“As it (COVID-19) has disorganized Donald, so will it disorganize Pombe. No eccentric leader is going to help his country out of Coronavirus. Only authentic leaders will. You play politics with science, you lose,” he posted.

Tanzania, which confirmed its first case three weeks ago, on Thursday recorded 11 Coronavirus infections, raising the country’s tally to 94.

The East African nation has already registered 4 deaths and 11 recoveries.

Magufuli has strongly refused to ban gatherings in places of worship arguing thats where true healing can be found.

On Thursday, he declared three national days of prayer so that Tanzanians can seek divine intervention over the highly contagious virus.

However, opposition leader Zitto Zuberi Ruyagwa Kabwe has urged citizens to adhere to directives issued by health professionals, and avoid gatherings such as churches and crusades.

“My fellow Tanzanians, due to COVID-19 I urge you to continue to avoid gatherings, wash your hands with soap and water regularly and follow health advice by professionals. God will hear us if we do our best to protect ourselves from infection,” Kabwe tweeted on Thursday.

Zimbabweans Can’t Stand The Heat In Botswana Lockdown Want To Be Repatriated Back Home

Immigrants in search of odd jobs line the streets in Gaborone. (Mqondisi Dube/VOA)
Immigrants in search of odd jobs line the streets in Gaborone.

Hundreds of Zimbabweans living in Botswana are applying for a trip home, saying the COVID-19 crisis has left them on the edge of starvation. The immigrants usually survive by doing odd jobs, but with Botswana in a lockdown due the coronavirus, they cannot find work to support themselves.

Additionally, the immigrants were initially excluded from the Botswana government’s food parcels.

“We are in a bad state,” said Josephine Mutsaka, 54, one of many Zimbabwean illegal immigrants in Gaborone. “We have no food at the moment, and the only option is to go back home. When we are in Botswana, we survive through ‘piece jobs’ but that has stopped because of the lockdown. We can’t blame the Botswana government for giving priority to its citizens.”

Botswana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Unity Dow, told local media that officials are discussing how to address the plight of immigrants.

Some Zimbabweans had crossed into Botswana for shopping but were kept in due to the lockdown.

Some immigrants, like Tendai Ndlovu, are eager to return home, although returning Zimbabwean residents face a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

Ndlovu is wary of being locked in the Zimbabwe government’s holding center.

“We do not know how long the coronavirus will be around,” Ndlovu said. “In the meantime, I want to return home to be with family, although I have heard people complain of poor conditions during the quarantine in Plumtree.”

Plumtree is the only crossing point between the southern African neighbors that is currently open.

A Zimbabwean embassy official confirmed the office has begun a process to repatriate both legal and illegal Zimbabwean immigrants.

It’s not known how many Zimbabweans live in Botswana, but in an average year, Botswana’s government deports about 15,000 illegal immigrants to Zimbabwe.

The Botswana government says it will assist the immigrants with transport up to the two countries’ border post, with the first returnees expected at the Plumtree entry point on Thursday.

Epworth Fuel Dealer Burnt Beyond Recognition While Trying To Retrieve Money Bag From Burning House

A man from Epworth was burnt beyond recognition when a petrol drum caught fire at his homestead.

The 29 year old man was involved in the illegal sell of petrol from his backyard. According to the police the man was busy filling containers of petrol when his wife started cooking using gas inside the house. This started a fire and he was able to rush inside and take his wife, brother and child to safety.

It was then that he enquired from his wife whether the bag of money had been retrieved from the house to which they responded in the negative. The man rushed back inside to get the money and all hell broke loose. He was burnt inside and was unable to get outside.

Police have warned against the sell of petrol in homesteads as it is highly dangerous. Most people in high density suburbs are hoarding fuel and reselling it at a higher rate which poses a danger to their families.

The minister stated “The face mask should never be promoted as our primary prevention strategy and should never be promoted separately from hand-washing and social distancing,”

He then noted that “To ensure that N95 masks and surgical masks are secured for workers who need them, we would like to recommend that the cloth face mask should be used by the general population.”

Senior RBZ Official In Trouble For Circulating An In-house Document On Social Media

Philton Makena

THE Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has suspended its senior economist, Mr Philton Makena, pending disciplinary action for leaking a “de-dollarisation roadmap” document before its approval by authorities.

The detailed document, which had gone viral on social media platforms, outlines key macro-economic policy measures to support the five year de-dollarisation strategy. In a statement yesterday afternoon, RBZ Governor Dr John Mangudya, advised the public to ignore the leaked document and apologised for the anxiety and inconvenience it may have caused on the market.

“The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe wishes to advise the public that the document titled ‘De-dollarisation Roadmap’, which has been circulating on social media was leaked by a senior Bank economist, Philton Makena, who had access to a document on the macro-economic policy measures to support the five-year de-dollarisation strategy, which was being worked on by a team of economists in the bank.

“The draft document is not official as it has not even been discussed at both Bank and Government levels. The document should, therefore, be disregarded,” said Dr Mangudya.

The Apex Bank chief said the document in question was being worked on by the team of economists on a computer allocated to chief economist in the Bank, Mr Paul Gilmour Mukoki.

“The Bank has since established that Mr Mukoki was not responsible for the leakage of the document,” he said.

“Mr Makena’s conduct amounted to breach of the oath of secrecy by which all bank employees are bound. Accordingly, the Bank has suspended him with immediate effect and has commenced disciplinary proceedings against him.”

In the leaked de-dollarisation framework, the use of the US-dollar for domestic transactions was set to remain permissible in the next four years while a fixed and dual exchange system was to be adopted.

Fate Of The English Premiership 2020 Season To Be Sealed Today.

Mohammed Salah of log leaders Liverpool

LONDON. — A commitment to completing the season before the start of July is among the options being considered by English Premier League football clubs.

The clubs are due to meet today in the latest attempt to pick a way through the Covid-19 crisis. A resolution to consign the 2019-20 campaign to history by June 30, whether or not the entire schedule of games has been completed, will be among the proposals put to the league.

According to some reports, one of the most significant factors driving the idea to finish by that point — favoured by a large number of the league’s members — is the expiry of numerous player and staff contracts by the end of June. One executive from a leading club said he was relatively relaxed, with FIFA having issued guidelines last week stating contracts can be extended until such time as the season ends. But he admitted the subject was on the table, with other clubs worried that English contractual law would render the governing body’s stipulations irrelevant.

That would lead to hundreds of potentially unresolved situations should fixtures be honoured into July. In theory, an out-of-contract player could then stand himself down from action even if still relied upon by his club for its remaining games.

If the proposal to settle the season by June 30 is put to a vote, the Premier League would require a 14-club majority to approve any decision. Should it go through, the chances of completing a 38-game schedule would appear distinctly remote. Most teams have nine games left to play while four — Manchester City, Sheffield United, Arsenal and Aston Villa — must play 10.

While clubs in Germany have returned to training, that scenario is still some way off in England. Then there would be the issue of getting players match-fit ahead of what, even if the league was cleared to resume behind closed doors at the start of June, would be an intense schedule. Curtailing the campaign along the proposed lines would not equate to voiding it if some fixtures remain unplayed, although it is unclear what efforts would be required to land upon a final league table that broadly satisfied everyone. Redoubling efforts to draw a line under 2019-20 would, the clubs believe, mean planning for 2020-21 could take place under less of a cloud and reduce the extent to which two seasons are hampered by the crisis. — The Guardian.

Justice Bere Loses

Justice Francis Bere

State Media|The tribunal to investigate a complaint against suspended Supreme Court judge Justice Francis Bere will now sit after he lost his bid to get the High Court to hear as a matter of urgency his action stopping the sitting.

High Court judge Justice Alfias Chitakunye ruled the matter was not urgent before striking it off the urgent matters’ court roll.

Justice Bere can still pursue his case as a normal court application, but this means it is unlikely to be heard until the tribunal has finished sitting.

He contends that the three-member tribunal set by President Mnangagwa to inquire into his suitability to continue holding office, does not have jurisdiction to deal with the matter.

President Mnangagwa recently appointed, on the recommendation of the Judicial Service Commission, a three-member tribunal to decide on Justice Bere’s possible removal from office, with the commission doing a U-turn after initially clearing him in November last year.

It is because of that U-turn that Justice Bere contends the recommendation for a tribunal was invalid.

In a bid to block the proceedings, Justice Bere — through his legal team comprising Professor Lovemore Madhuku and Advocates Girach Firoz and Lewis Uriri — filed an urgent chamber application challenging the legality of the tribunal because of that U-turn.

The JSC had raised preliminary points arguing that the matter was not urgent.

Adv David Ochieng, who was being instructed by Mr Andrew Mugandiwa of Wintertons law firm, argued that the case was not urgent and that it cannot be heard during the lockdown.

He defended the JSC’s decision to refer Justice Bere’s case to the President for constitution of a tribunal, despite having cleared him of any wrongdoing in November last year.

Adv Ochieng argued that the tribunal cannot be stopped from inquiring into the matter, saying if the JSC was wrong, such a finding has to be made by the tribunal.

However, Adv Firoz argued that the JSC acted unlawfully by recommending a tribunal against Justice Bere when the commission had earlier cleared the judge of any wrongdoing.

He further argued that Justice Bere’s right to be heard was violated because the complainant in one of the cases, Mr Itai Ndudzo, wrote a second letter implicating the judge, but the JSC did not afford Justice Bere an opportunity to respond.

On that basis, Justice Bere seeks an interdict to restrain the tribunal from commencing the inquiry. The tribunal to inquire into Justice Bere’s case is chaired by retired judge Justice Simbi Mubako.

Justice Mubako will work with two lawyers — Advocate Takawira Nzombe and Mrs Rekayi Maphosa.

Justice Bere is accused of telephoning Zinara lawyer, Mr Ndudzo of Mutamangira and Associates, asking him to consider settling a civil dispute pitting Zinara against Fremus Enterprises, a firm owned by the judge’s relatives.

The complaint was first raised before Deputy Chief Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza during a court hearing before Mr Ndudzo was asked to make the complaint in writing.

Further Chaos In Maize Meal Distribution As Govt Dumps Shops With Expired Licences.

GMAZ chairman Mr Tafadzwa Musarara

Just when starving Zimbabweans were beginning to get a relief that they would be able to get Mealie Meal At their nearest little shops and move away from the chaos at large retail shops in the CBD, the process hit a snag in Harare on Thursday as some shops were left out.

Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe delivered 600 tonnes to shops in Ruwa, Epworth, Mabvuku and Tafara in Harare in a new planned distribution scheme.

The distribution was supposed to start on Wednesday this week but was affected by challenges such as expiry of some shop licences.

Only a handful of shops received the deliveries, while some shops were closed due to the 21-day Covid-19 lockdown.

Each shop was getting 300 pockets but most of the shops’ operating licences expired at the end of last month.

The trucks were manned by State security agents to ensure the maize meal got to the intended beneficiaries.

Shops were also monitored by the security agents to make sure all packets were sold in an orderly way an that none was diverted to the black-market.

Some members of the public were excited to get the subsidisedmaize meal at their nearest shops.

Some said they used to walk long distances to Pick and Pay supermarket situated along Mutare Road to buy a bag.

GMAZ chairman Mr Tafadzwa Musarara said the millers were delivering the maize-meal according to the zonal system. “GMAZ is currently undertaking an exercise, which seeks to coordinate our deliveries and consolidate deliveries in a zonal system.

“We have already started this process, we look forward to cooperation from the retailers and we are most grateful to the security forces, that are working with us throughout the whole exercise, especially ZRP and the Zimbabwe National Army.”

He said they have delivered 600 tonnes of maize meal in Harare.

“We have delivered 600 tonnes in Epworth, Mabvuku, Tafara, Ruwa. When we started to deliver yesterday, we needed the money upfront. Now for this truck we have had to compromise. It came here before it had been paid for. In-fact the shop owner is just paying now. Ordinarily shops must pay upfront. The majority of the shops only opened yesterday, so again they really need to re-arrange themselves. We are proceeding with the programme,” he said.

He said people can buy the maize meal using all forms of payment.

“People are free to use either cash, cards or EcoCash. The retailers are buying from us using EcoCash.

“We are coming from another shopping centre, where the retailer paid using EcoCash but was now demanding cash from consumers. We have alerted the police to deal with that,” he said.

He, however, revealed that they had just learnt that no shops in Epworth were licenced and had to compromise in the interests of consumers to do limited deliveries, which started yesterday and would continue until Epworth Local Board regularised the licencing issue next week.

He also appealed to Government to grant the maize meal trucks easy passage at roadblocks to speed up the delivery process.

Mr Musarara said maize supplies were improving.

“We are working with the Government on that one. We have offered them 40 000 tonnes so that there is enough in the worst case scenario of a lockdown extension. We have enough of that maize meal coming in, but the demand is huge,” he said.

A 10kg maize-meal packet is selling for Z$70.

“We need about 80 000 tonnes per month as the private sector to feed the commercial market. This is perhaps equivalent to about Z$25 million,” he said.

Zim Sets 2000 Beds For Coronavirus Patients, Will They Suffice?

Secretary for Health and Child Care Dr Agnes Mahomva

State Media|More than 2 000 hospital beds in all provinces of the country have been identified for serious Covid-19 patients requiring hospitalisation.

These beds are in Harare (610), Bulawayo (270), Mashonaland East (220), Manicaland (200), Mashonaland West (180), Midlands (180), Masvingo (160), Matabeleland North (140) and Matabeleland South (120).

From these totals, each province has also identified beds for intensive care treatment.

With assistance from a partner, Gweru has put up a state of the art isolation facility.

For other facilities, preparation was aided by disbursement of financial commitment from Treasury from which $154 million has so far been used.

In an interview with state media on Thursday, Secretary for Health and Child Care Dr Agnes Mahomva said a “reasonable number” of the identified beds were ready for use should there be any case requiring admission.

“In addition to our central referral hospitals, we have also asked all provincial hospitals to prepare isolation facilities in case they get cases and in case the country get an influx of patients requiring admission like what is happening in other countries. This is still work in progress but should any of the provinces get a case they should be able to at least isolate,” said Dr Mahomva.

She said teams were on the ground assessing the status of the identified beds to see if there are suitable for both serious and critical cases.

Dr Mahomva said the number of beds in each province varied depending on the model institutions were using. She said some institutions were identifying stand-alone facilities while others were reserving a certain number of beds within the main hospital facility.

Dr Mahomva said Government would continue working with its partners to ensure that the decentralisation plan shapes according to plan.

“We should be able to assist as many patients as we can should the outbreak affect us as is the case in other countries and to achieve that we will continue working with our partners coupled with our resources,” said Dr Mahomva.

Apart from Government administered health facilities, Dr Mahomva said availed resources were also disbursed to local authority facilities such as Wilkins Infectious Diseases Hospital in Harare and Thongrove Infectious Diseases Hospital in Bulawayo.

Isolation of Covid-19 cases, which has now been decentralised to all parts of the country started from Wilkins Infectious Diseases Hospital.

However, cases have been emanating from as far as Victoria Falls, forcing Government to quickly decentralise isolation facilities.

In the same vein, Government has also decentralised laboratory testing of Covid-19 cases with the National TB Reference Laboratory at Mpilo Central Hospital now offering the service to samples from the southern part of the country.

All central and provincial hospitals have since been advised to start testing all suspected cases using the rapid test kits for screening potential Covid-19 cases.

Will Mnangagwa Eventually Officially Announce Lockdown Extension In His Televised Independence Day Speech Tomorrow?

President Emmerson Mnangagwa

Paul Nyathi|PRESIDENT Mnangagwa will make a televised address to Zimbabweans on the country’s 40th Independence Day tomorrow in respect to the measures implemented by Government to contain the spread of coronavirus.

The day comes at a time when the country is under a 21-day national lockdown declared by the Government to contain the spread of Covid-19 that has claimed more than 130 000 lives globally while confirmed cases of the virus are almost at 2 million.

Prior to announcing the lockdown, President Mnangagwa postponed the holding the Independence Day celebration events whose main programme was scheduled for Bulawayo. The deputy chief secretary to the President and Cabinet, who is also Presidential spokesperson, Mr George Charamba, yesterday said in line with the Government measures, the President would make a televised address.

“The President will make a televised address to the nation on Independence Day in respect to the efforts to contain Covid-19. The address will be broadcast from State House so he will reach Zimbabweans through television and other media platforms,” said Mr Charamba.

Mnangagwa has been very dicey on the extension of the lockdown following disputed reports that he had extended the lockdown by a further two weeks.

He threatened a jail term of up to 20 years to the author of the statement, purporting to bear his signature, that said the lockdown to contain the coronavirus outbreak had been extended.

Mnangagwa, who was speaking at his farm after touring Gweru to check on lockdown compliance, told state broadcaster ZBC on Tuesday that the statement, which circulated on social media last week and was immediately denied by the government, was fake.

“That is absolutely nonsense, I have never made such a statement,” Mnangagwa said.

“If we catch this person, it must be exemplary and they must go in for at least at level 14, which is 20 years’ imprisonment. That, I think we need to demonstrate that we don’t want false news to be circulated.”

Mnangagwa however gave a hint that he will eventually extend the lockdown period.

“Primarily, what is most important is that we preserve lives because if we lose lives, we will never resurrect them but if we have problems with the economy, we can always reconstruct the economy and grow it again.”

Rise In Coronavirus Infections Besides Lockdown Worrying Mnangagwa, So What’s Next?

President Emmerson Mnangagwa

Paul Nyathi|President Mnangagwa yesterday expressed concern over increases, almost daily, of Covid-19 confirmed cases.

The President said this while launching the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services’ Call and Data Centre that was sponsored by Innscor Africa and Liquid Telecom.

“It (Covid-19) has just begun to attack Zimbabwe and the spike is beginning to show an upward trend in our country. Yes, we have introduced a lockdown some two weeks ago but we are realising now that the pandemic is now more serious than at the time we introduced the lockdown,” he said.

According to an online world country by country count of Coronavirus figures, Zimbabwe now has 24 confirmed Coronavirus Cases three deaths and two recoveries.

THE number of people infected with Covid-19 in Zimbabwe shot up on Wednesday after five more people tested positive in Bulawayo out of 23 samples taken from the National TB Reference Laboratory at Mpilo Central Hospital.

All five Bulawayo cases were due to local transmission.

Bulawayo, which has 10 confirmed cases, has the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the country followed by Harare, which has eight cases. Mashonaland East has four confirmed cases wile Matabeleland North has one case.

Zimbabwe began a 21-day nationwide lockdown on the 30th of March and set to end midnight this Sunday.

At the start of the lockdown, the country had recorded seven cases and one death and these figures have since gone up threefold despite the lockdown.

Earlier this week President Emmerson Mnangagwa indicated that the Government will be reviewing the national lockdown on the 20th and will consider the possibility of an extension.

Many countries that have had strict lockdowns are now deciding whether to extend them, or impose more restrictions, or ease restrictions.

The Secretary-General of the World Health Organisation last Friday advised that countries should ensure that the following criteria are met before they lift restrictions:

  • Covid-19 transmission is controlled
  • Their health systems have the capacity to detect, test, isolate and treat every case of Covid-19 and trace every contact of those infected.
  • Outbreak risks are minimised in special settings
  • Preventative measures against Covid-19 infection are in place in essential places that people go to such as workplaces, schools, etc.
  • Importation risks are managed
  • Communities are fully educated and engaged to adjust to the “new norm”.

Obviously Zimbabwe does not fulfil any of these criteria, so extending the lockdown seems necessary. The spread of Covid-19 is probably just starting in Zimbabwe.

Our health services are not equipped to handle a large pandemic, therefore containing its spread is still vital. But it needs careful thought and plans put in place. It also need government to fully explain their decisions.

Bosso Supporter Laid To Rest

HIGHLANDERS and national team defender Peter Muduhwa was among a handful of mourners that paid their last respects to popular Bosso supporter Lubelihle Maphosa, who was buried at Athlone Cemetery in Bulawayo yesterday.

Maphosa (35), succumbed to an asthma attack at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) last Sunday.

In the absence of Highlanders officials, Muduhwa said his presence was to show that footballers valued their supporters.

“Without supporters we are nothing. They show us love and rally behind us in good and bad times.

I know a number of people that Luba travelled with for away games and I’m here to give them support for their loss,” said Muduhwa.

Bosso fans, through their numerous WhatsApp groups, raised $7 000 and sourced various basic commodities, which they handed over to Maphosa’s family.

Club life members Khetha Marizane, Prince Tshuma, Sidumisile Ntini, Never Phiri, Thulani Dube and Philani Mpofu led an adhoc supporters’ committee to mobilise funds to assist with Maphosa’s burial.

The supporters’ coordinator Philani Mpofu expressed disappointment at the club’s leadership for not sending an official condolence message, even through its various social media platforms or sending a representative to yesterday’s burial.

“As supporters we feel the club has demonstrated that it only cares about us when it wants something from us like asking for goodies to assist the team yet it can’t even at least send a condolence message to the family of a member we just lost.

Luba’s death was topical in almost all the club’s supporters groups that also house some of the executive members, yet the club failed to just send a message.

Is asking for that little recognition like a condolence message too much,” said Mpofu.

“Luba was one of the people who contributed towards the team’s off-season preparations, giving the little she had so that the club could buy food for the players before friendly matches.

We’re not asking for Highlanders to contribute money, but just a simple message goes a long way to show supporters that even in bad times the club cares.”-State media

Horror As Buffalo Gores Man (72) To Death

A 72-year-old Zaka man who was bathing in a stream was on Wednesday attacked and killed by a lone buffalo.

Police identified the deceased as Ephraim Chinyere from Ngwaru village under Chief Ndanga near Muchechetere Secondary School.

Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said: “We have received information about a 72-year-old man who had gone out for a bath at the river and was attacked while bathing.

He sustained deep cuts on the ribs, buttocks and on the back and could have died due to excessive bleeding.”

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) spokesperson Mr Tinashe Farawo said the buffalo was tracked down and killed by game rangers yesterday.

“In the interest of protecting the public, our rangers had to put down the buffalo,” he said.

“Normally, we have the option of driving such animals back to the game reserve they have strayed from, but in this case, the animal had killed a person and was considered dangerous.”

A fellow villager, Mr Urayai Zava, said after the attack, the elderly man attempted to crawl back home, but could not make it to hospital in time.

“We alerted Zaka Police and they attended to the scene,” he said.

It is suspected that the buffalo came from either Kyle Recreational Park or Devure Ranch.

Some villagers from Zaka claimed that a few days before the attack, two buffaloes had been seen in Chiroma area near the border with neighbouring Bikita district.-State media

Mnangagwa Urges Corporate World To Join Fight Against COVID-19

President Mnangagwa yesterday expressed concern over increases, almost daily, of Covid-19 confirmed cases, a development he says makes it crucial for the corporate world to continue assisting Government in all ways possible to fight the pandemic.

The President said this while launching the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services’ Call and Data Centre that was sponsored by Innscor Africa and Liquid Telecom.

The call centre, which is located in Newlands, Harare, is a helpline that can be accessed by all Zimbabweans to get information relating to Covid-19 and any other factual Government information.

“It (Covid-19) has just begun to attack Zimbabwe and the spike is beginning to show an upward trend in our country.

Yes, we have introduced a lockdown some two weeks ago but we are realising now that the pandemic is now more serious than at the time we introduced the lockdown,” he said.

President Mnangagwa applauded Innscor Africa and Liquid Telecom for heeding Government call to come forward and support the fight against Covid-19.

Said the President: “You are not only serving Government but your brothers and sisters, mother, your father, your uncle and niece is being assisted.

I wish that many other entities countrywide in the private sector, in the public sector are able to do anything small or big to contribute towards the fight against this pandemic.

I am happy that many people across this country are coming forward with resources to assist us and support our frontline soldiers — the doctors and the nurses.”

As a result of the call and data centre, President Mnangagwa said all Zimbabweans could now call on the helpline 2023 and seek assistance.

He said on that helpline, people could access information that all countries are receiving as guided by the World Health Organisation.

“As I launch this, it is at an early stage but I believe as we move on, the more we speak about it on television, on radio and in print newspapers, I believe that more and more of our people will get to know about this facility and possibly in future there may be need for you to expand the facility here,” said the President.-State media

Trump Attacks WHO

Farai Dziva|Microsoft mogul Bill Gates has strongly opposed US President Donald Trump’s decision to stop the funding of the World Health Organisation programmes.

Trump declared the United was stopping funding of WHO programmes as he was unhappy with what he described as the organization’s bias towards China -as the deadly Coronavirus pandemic continues to cause havoc.

In response Bill Gates tweeted:

Halting funding for the World Health Organization during a world health crisis is as dangerous as it sounds.

Their work is slowing the spread of COVID-19 and if that work is stopped no other organization can replace them. The world needs @WHO

500 Zimbabweans To Be Deported From Botswana

500 Zimbabweans are expected to be deported from Botswana after the neighbouring country imposed a 28-day lockdown followed by a proposal for a six-month state of emergency.

The development has pushed hundreds of Zimbabweans who were surviving on menial jobs to the brink of starvation.

The Zimbabwean ambassador to Botswana Batirai Henry Mukonoweshuro, in a letter, said some of the deportees had sought assistance from the embassy to return home.

He wrote:
Some have been surrendering themselves to the police and district commissioners in their areas of stay.

In this regard, the government of Zimbabwe should expect to receive 500 deportees from Botswana.

About 230 people have already surrendered themselves to the police and district commissioner in Gaborone.

These were expected to be deported as of (Thursday) and more continue to register themselves with the embassy.

Mukonoweshuro recommended that the relevant ministries and departments should make arrangements to facilitate the reception of the deportees at the border and to prepare for their transportation to the facilities provided for their quarantine.

The government has converted Plumtree High School into an isolation centre to hold deportees from Botswana for the mandatory 21-day period.

On Tuesday, 87 Zimbabweans were deported, bringing the number to a total of 368 deportees.-NewsDay

Hwange Woman Succumbs To COVID-19 Related Illness?

A Hwange family has been placed under isolation after a family member collapsed and died at their homestead after experiencing difficulties in breathing.

Agneta Tshuma (52), died in the early hours of Tuesday and the family reported a case of sudden death prompting the Hwange COVID-19 response to rush to take samples from the body for testing for COVID-19.

Speaking to the Chronicle , the woman’s husband, Johannes Sibanda, said his wife had no history of sickness.

He said:
We had just finished fetching water around midnight when she started complaining that she was failing to breathe as something was blocking her mouth and nose.

She said she needed fresh air and went to sit by the veranda but suddenly collapsed and started frothing from the mouth. We tried to administer first aid but she died shortly afterwards.

She was not sick and didn’t show any signs of illness. We alerted police who ordered us not to touch or move the body.

The police came in the morning and told villagers not to come for the funeral and we buried her that same morning with a few family members in attendance.

Matabeleland North Provincial and Devolution Minister Richard Moyo who chairs the COVID-19 provincial Taskforce said nothing has been confirmed yet and will only be able to talk about it once the results are out.- Chronicle

WHO Sets Measures For Lifting Of COVID -19 Restrictions

The World Health Organisation has said for a country to lift lockdown measures it must meet certain conditions.

WHO director-general Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, speaking on the matter of lifting lockdowns said:

…Some countries are considering when they can lift these restrictions. Others are considering when to introduce them.

On both cases, these decisions must be based on protecting human health and be guided by what we know about the virus and how it behaves. We are all learning all the time and adjusting our strategy based on the latest available evidence.

WHO reportedly recommended that for a country to lift lockdown measures it must:

  1. Lift the lockdown only if health systems have capabilities to test, isolate, treat and trace every contact.
  2. Make sure the transmission of the virus is controlled and ensure that outbreak risks are minimal in specialised settings such as nursing homes and health institutions.
  3. Avail preventive measures, especially in places where people converge such as workplaces and schools.
  4. Ensure that imported risks are managed while communities are educated, engaged and empowered to adjust to the new norm.

Madzibaba Enoch is based in Budiriro, Harare.

Speaking to ZimEye.com on Wednesday, a senior member of the apostolic sect said:

“Madzibaba Enoch from Budiriro 4, Nyenyedzi Nomwe, helped a person recover from COVID -19.

WHO Warns African Countries Against Lifting Lockdown Measures

World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus last week warned countries that lifting existing restrictions in the fight against Covid-19 could result in deadly resurgence of the virus.

The warning coincided with most African states entering the second or third week of their national lockdowns.

Zimbabwe is in the third week of its lockdown and it is unclear if it would be extended.

Already South Africa has just announced a two-week extension so as to maximise on the positives scored in the bid to curb new infections.

There’s no guarantee this will be the last extension given that the various countries are running the same process but on a different days.

For example there is a three-day lag between South Africa and Zimbabwe meaning at some stage the periods may have to be synchronised.

Judging by the cycle of infection the continent has entered probably its most critical phase.

“I know that some countries are already planning the transition out of stay-at-home restrictions, WHO wants to see restrictions lifted as much as anyone.

At the same time, lifting restrictions too quickly could lead to a deadly resurgence, the way down can be dangerous as the way up if not managed properly,” Ghebreyesus cautioned.-State media

Blind Couple Stranded In South Africa

A blind couple who mostly rely on money they get from begging outside stores in Louis Trichardt, Limpopo, are battling to make ends meet.

According to GroundUp, Willie Chimuka and Fungai Pepukai moved to South Africa from Zimbabwe in 2018. The couple has four children. Three live in Zimbabwe with Chimuka’s parents and one lives with them, GroundUp reported.

The couple previously attended Copota, a special school for the blind in Masvingo, Zimbabwe.

Chimuka, 43, said he usually sat near the entrance to Spar in Louis Trichardt while Pepukai sat outside Jet, but since the lockdown, they have not been able to collect enough money for food and rent.

When GroundUp met the couple, they were on their way to the Makhado police station to request permission to return to their begging spots.

“We really appreciate the government’s efforts… We were prepared and had everything in place [for the lockdown] but now the extension is a challenge to us. We pay rent on the 15th of every month. This money is budgeted but the challenge is if we pay rent we are going without food for the extended [lockdown] days,” said Chimuka.

“We cannot sit at home and relax. All we need is permission to go back to our usual begging spots. If we do not, the family is going to go for days without food. Every month we send money and some food back home. Our parents are just peasant farmers and they cannot do much to support our children,” said Chimuka.

Chimuka said that the police advised them to stay home as movement will endanger their lives and those of others.

Witness Tiva from the Limpopo Department of Social Development said the department was running a programme, distributing food parcels to those in need. He advised the couple to visit a local councillor who would take the matter up with social workers in the area.

GroundUp approached a social worker at a local shelter who said they were only allowed to assist people who stayed at, or were willing to move into, the shelter at the Makhado Showground for the duration of the lockdown.

But the couple told GroundUp they would not be comfortable leaving their belongings at the rented house.

It is unclear where Chimuka and Pepukai will get their next meal.-GroundUp

George Charamba, Prof Moyo In Twitter War Over ED’s Involvement In Universities

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s spokesperson George Charamba and former Zanu-PF spin doctor Jonathan Moyo were on Thursday engaged in a Twitter war over the President’s involvement in the affairs of Zimbabwe’s universities.

Moyo sparked the exchange when he described as nonsense statements by higher education minister Amon Murwira that universities will wait for Mnangagwa decisions on when they will open after they were shut down because of the coronavirus outbreak.

“Nonsense,” said Moyo.

“Universities are autonomous and run by academic senates, accountable to councils!”

Charamba quickly countered saying:

“State Universities Sir!!! With the Head of State as their Chancellor!! You couldn’t have forgotten so soon, Prof!! You can’t, won’t, stir rebellion, and you know that!!”

Moyo responded:

“Cde Charamba the Chancellor never ever initiated university policies before. Never. In terms of the enabling statutes of state universities, Senates are responsible for academic affairs and Councils for policy, as the employer. The Chancellor is ceremonial, ex officio!”

Charamba reminded Moyo that things were not normal due to the Covid-19 scourge.

“When all things are normal, Prof!! This is one time when State Authority intersects visibly and pronouncedly with authority of Senate. More and more, University authorities will increasingly feel power of Chancellor ordinarily wielded in reserve rather than exercised in practice.

“As you know, we face a national & global pandemic, meaning devolved powers return to source!! What universities can and should do – and I see lots of sense in your on-line proposals provided resources are there – is to proactively help the Chancellor arrive at workable decisions,” said Charamba.

Moyo pressed on:

“In terms of what law Cde Charamba? State authority must be exercised in terms of the law at all times. We have a state of national disaster and not a state of emergency. Besides, the state is not the Head of State and Government but a panoply of institutions, acting complementary!”

Charamba had the last say when he said:

“At all normal times!! In any case you used the term autonomy, not independent!! And you are right!!! Of course, Ezekiel Guti, Catholic University, Selous and Africa Universities will act independently, even then within the remit of host national laws!!!”

Suspected COVID-19 Case In Chinhoyi

Health authorities in Chinhoyi have admitted a man at Mzari Clinic isolation facility after he presented Covid-19 related symptoms upon screening.

Samples have been taken for testing and results have not yet been finalised.

Mashonaland West provincial medical director Dr Wenceslaus Nyamayaro confirmed the development saying it was only a precautionary measure.

“I can confirm that a man has been detained at Mzari Clinic isolation centre after he was screened and presented symptoms related to Covid-19 only as a precautionary measure as some conditions such as malaria present with almost similar symptoms.

“The case is undergoing further management while only test results will be conclusive on what we are dealing with,” said Dr Nyamayaro.

The country has to date recorded 23 cases with no cases reported in Mashonaland West province.-StateMedia

LEAD Celebrates First Anniversary

Happy First Anniversary LEAD

On 15 April 2019, the founding members of LEAD had their first meeting at the LEAD State House in Marlborough. A declaration was made on 16 April 2019 day we were going to form the “alternative party” in Zimbabwe.

President Linda Tsungirirai Masarira was duly appointed by consensus to be the founding President of Labour Economists and Afrikan Democrats. The Marlborough declaration was clear and the fruits thereof are now visible for everyone to see.

We had planned a big celebration which unfortunately failed to materialise because of the lockdown. Our hope as LEAD is that we will be able to overcome this deadly Covid19 Pandemic and work together as Zimbabweans in our diversity to fix Zimbabwe.

The LEAD Political stance in brief known as the Marlborough Declaration 2019.

We, Pan Afrikan Zimbabwean workers, students, farmers, traders, CSOs, women rights groups, youth groups, children rights groups, freedom fighters, citizens in diaspora and citizens join hands to reclaiming the people’s revolution which has been captured, subverted and diverted by agents of neocolonialism in the Republic of Zimbabwe.

We realise that Zimbabwe is our land and here by commit to take charge of the social, economic, environmental and political processes that enable this country to go forward.

Before 1980 we led a political revolution which saw us shackling off the chains of colonialism, bringing about the political revolution and freedom we are enjoying today.

However because of naivety, greed and corruption we created divisions among our ranks and let our erstwhile enemies creep back in and subvert the revolution.

As a result all arms of government were captured by agents of capital and neocolonialism and they have through the years systematically undermined the people’s government. For them to gain full control they have led on onslaught on wage labour reducing all workers and citizens into destitution.

The case of the Zimbabwean worker today is a sad story which has seen over 80% of the working class and the generality of people living below the living wage.

The remainder of Zimbabwean citizens were forced to seek economic refugee in foreign lands where they not only sell their labour cheaply but work under conditions which can be referred to as modern day slavery. These gallant sons and daughters of the Zimbabwean soil are living with xenophobic attacks in foreign land.

We the workers and disadvantaged groups of Zimbabwe also realise the spirit of Pan Afrikanism which fueled the revolutions for political emancipation resulting the formation of the Organization of Afrikan Union has died.

We therefore take it upon ourselves to work starting in Zimbabwe to rekindle this flame and push fellow workers throughout Afrika to redirect the Afrikan effort towards getting Afrika take her seat at the table of continents on an equal footing. In doing so we want to go into the world wielding our formidable resource and labour power which for years has been used to develop Europe and the United States of America.

It’s no robbery for Afrikan labourers to demand the humane treatment of the Afrikan and the refusal by Afrika to be referred to as a third world. We have developed cultural values and technologies which have contributed immensely to the modernization of the world and demand fair treatment.

To redirect our efforts to achieve full economic potential with a generational mandate we have decided to regroup under a new banner. In a show of resilience we are reorganizing as Labour, Economists Afrikan Democrats (LEAD). In this renewed exisistance we want to apply all our efforts towards reclaiming our revolution for the Zimbabweanness. It’s time to LEAD!!!! Together we can!!!!!

Labour Economists Afrikan Democrats (LEAD) invites all Pan Afrikan Zimbabwean workers, students, farmers, traders, CSOs, women rights groups, children rights groups, freedom fighters, citizens in diaspora and citizens to join hands in reclaiming the people’s revolution which has been captured, subverted and diverted by agents of neocolonialism.

We are, however still hopeful that even through the global Corona virus pandemic, crumbling economies and difficult living conditions, we remain resilient in working for a better Zimbabwe through developmental strides we take now, together.

We pray for speedy recovery for all Covid19 patients in Zimbabwe and the world. Stay at home, stay safe and save lives.Together we can stop the spread of Corona virus.

Happy Birthday LEAD Family! Makoroko Amhlope!

FULL TEXT- MWONZORA’S STATEMENT ON SUPREME COURT RULING

On the 1st of March, 2020, the Supreme Court of Zimbabwe delivered two judgements concerning the Movement for Democratic Change. One judgement related to the challenge lodged by the party on the legality of Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment No.1 of 2019.

In that judgement the Supreme Court ruled that the passing of the amendment to the constitution of Zimbabwe to allow the President to appoint judges without them going through public interviews had not been regularly passed and therefore was null and void.

The second judgement related to the dispute principally between MDC Gokwe Organising Secretary Elias Mashavira and MDC president Nelson Chamisa. In that case the Supreme Court ruled that the assumption of the party presidency by Nelson Chamisa was ultra votes the MDC constitution.

It proceeded to order the party to convene its Extraordinary Congress for purposes of electing a substantive President to replace the late Morgan Tsvangirai, within a maximum of 4 months. It reinstated the leadership of the MDC as elected at its 4th Congress in 2014 to run the affairs of the party pending the holding of the Extraordinary Congress.

The MDC leadership was sharply divided on the judgement. One group urged the party to accept the judgement and hold the Extraordinary Congress in terms of the its constitution. This way the party would deal with the party leadership question once and for all. The other group argued that the court was biased and had made a political judgement. At any rate the judgement did not affect them because the party had morphed into the MDC Alliance so went the argument.

The reaction to the suggestion that the party obeys the court judgement was an avalanche of hate and a torrent of intolerance. The leaders in question were immediately labelled as state agents who had infiltrated the party to destabilize it.

They were called charlatans, nincompoops, sellouts and Judases Iscariot and summarily ” expelled” from the party. On top of the hate language directed at them, attempts were made to recall these leaders from the Parliament of Zimbabwe where they are serving as Senators.

Death threats and other threats of violence have been made against these leaders with gangs reportedly hunting them down in Harare. The greater Zimbabwe body politic has also been sucked into this matter with opinion sharply divided on what the party should do in view of this judgement.

It must never be lost that the harsh reaction to the three senators emanate from the opinions they expressed in the aftermath of the judgement that touched on the legitimacy of the president of the party. The cruel and sad lesson is that while the national constitution and the party constitution provide for democracy, freedom of expression and freedom to make and hold opinion, these freedoms do not internally exist in political parties if that opinion or expression is not favorable to the leaders of the parties.

This shows the general dearth of democracy in political parties. Some years back Dzikamai Mavhaire suggested that President Mugabe had outlived his usefulness and that he must step down.

He was instantly expelled from Parliament and from Zanu PF. Sometime ago, Jonathan Moyo and his colleagues organized a meeting at Dinyane High School in Tsholotsho where they expressed their preference of Emerson Mnagagwa to take the position of vice president of Zanu PF and therefore of the country ahead of Joyce Mujuru.

A ruthless and humiliating purge ensued resulting in Prof. Moyo losing his cabinet post and party membership. Yet in the USA,for example, some legislators from President Trump’s Republican Party have openly differed with him without suffering any prejudice.

In the UK for example some Labour Party openly differed with their leader Jeremy Corbyn over some issues recently. They were not called names nor were they recalled from Parliament. The sad picture pointed is that the democracy bar has been set very low for Africa. Yet, I dare say there is nothing African about impunity and dictatorship!.

The second phenomenon to emerge in this matter is how far political parties are willing to stand by the very principles enshrined in their founding documents. In the case of the MDC its values and culture are set in articles 3 and 4 of the constitution. These values include freedom, Justice, equality, solidarity and democracy.

Over the years the MDC has been known to stand for Constitutionalism and rule of law. These are the values that officials sing at rallies, press conferences and other public fora. However this case has betrayed the disconnect between the values which are enshrined in the founding documents of the party and the actual practices within the political party.

It is submitted that for true democracy to thrive parties must stand by their founding values irrespective of the inconveniences to the leadership. Democracy is a painful enterprise which however must not be a mere ideal but a way of life.

The Supreme Court did not dictate to the MDC on who the party should elect as its leader at the Extraordinary Congress. It left that duty to the MDC members themselves. However in the rancor and acrimony that followed the ruling, most members failed to realise that the Supreme Court had in fact confirmed their sovereign right to elect their own leaders.

They failed to realize that the effect of the Supreme Court judgement was to set in motion a process through which the party would resolve the legitimacy question which was an albatross around the neck of its leader once and for all. It is obvious that some of the leaders fear this Congress because their candidate or candidates might lose.

However true democrats must never fear to practice democracy on the basis that it could yield unfavorable results to them.

This judgement also shows the sickness that has afflicted Zimbabwe’s body politic. The levels of tolerance to divergent views is very low while the levels of hate and acrimony are too high. The net effect therefore is to discourage people from airing their true views for fear of reprisals from political leaders. Unfortunately this retains power in the rulers instead of power being in the hands of the masses which is an affront to real democracy.

The other interesting dimension is the ” small man” and ” big man” dichotomy in our politics. In this case, a district organizing Secretary challenged the president of the party on a matter which he believed had a bearing on his right to choose a leader of his party. This as we have seen was at great personal risk.

On two occasions, first in the High Court and second, in the Supreme Court the district organizing secretary won over his more powerful opponent. Instead of honoring his victory the party leaders were condescending towards him. There were suggestions that someone “bigger and more intelligent” had conceived this case for some political benefit.

This attitude betrayed the patronage which has afflicted our political system. Assumption that people will become ignorant of their rights by virtue of their Station in life is simply wrong. This explains why in dictatorships the masses are never respected. In a democracy the masses must always be respected.

The case underscores the distrust with which our judicial system is viewed by many people. Many people believed that the judiciary had been manipulated to pass a judgement not favorable to the Appellants. What the proponents of this manipulation view temporarily chose to forget was that the entire hearing of the matter had been televised.

It was objectively clear all along which way the judgement would go. Looking at this case there was very little option on the judges but to make the judgement in the manner that they did. Sometimes litigants who lose fairly on the merits exploit the distrust that people have in the judicial system to explain away their loss or incompetence.

This is buttressed by the fact that the other judgement in which the MDC won its case against constitution amendment Act was conveniently ignored.

Having said this there is a lot of work to be done to bring confidence in our institutions. It turns out that the three Senators argument that the MDC Alliance was not a political party but a group of independent and separate political parties and that the Gweru Congress had not been an MDC Alliance latter corroborated and vindicated by empirical evidence.

This evidence included, the Alliance agreement itself, the advertisement convening the Gweru congress, the campaign posters by various candidates, the resolutions of the congress and the presidential statement made immediately after the congress. This meant that contrary to the assertion that the Supreme Court did not affect the party.

It is submitted that in the noble march towards democracy political values including Constitutionalism and the respect Court judgements must never be avoided. Lawlessness, anarchy and violence can never define a democratic revolution.

The road to true democracy is long, thorn, odious and full of unpleasantness. Yet a democracy founded on true values is what forms the essence of the Democratic struggle for which the Movement for Democratic Change was founded.

“Donors Assisting Binga Flood Victims More Than Govt”: MP

Binga North legislator Prince Dubeko Sibanda has said  the flood victims in his constituency have been getting more help from donors more than what the government has done for them so far.

He blamed the government for taking too long to respond to the villagers calls when the floods occurred and  after they suffered the damages.

“Firstly it’s because we have said that they took their time to provide temporary shelter, they only responded a month after with tents. That is alien to us because the government should have been the first to reach out to prove to us that we matter,” Sibanda said.

Sibanda appealed to each legislator to donate a bag of cement and the roofing sheets to the affected villagers.

He lamented that the outbreak of Covid-19 will affect the progress on the villagers.-Newsday

COVID- 19 Tests For Deceased Hwange Woman

By A Correspondent- A Hwange family has been placed under isolation after a family member collapsed and died at their homestead after experiencing difficulties in breathing.

Agneta Tshuma (52), died in the early hours of Tuesday and the family reported a case of sudden death prompting the Hwange COVID-19 response to rush to take samples from the body for testing for COVID-19.

Speaking to the state media the woman’s husband, Johannes Sibanda, said his wife had no history of sickness.

Matabeleland North Provincial and Devolution Minister Richard Moyo who chairs the COVID-19 provincial Taskforce said nothing has been confirmed yet and will only be able to talk about it once the results are out.-StateMedia

‘Apostle’ Chiwenga On Video: I Am The Only Voice Of God In Zimbabwe | IS HE TELLING THE TRUTH? – INVESTIGATION…

By Religion Reporter| The preacher who lied saying that ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa did not send soldiers to shoot people on the 1st of August 2018 (saying that God told him so, contradicting several LIVE video broadcasts of Mnangagwa literally doing it), Talent Chiwenga has said he is the only voice of God in the country.

Below was his statement in full:

“The government was supposed to invite the church, us, and me in particular, because I happen to be the only voice in Zimbabwe that speaks genuinely for God. (Video)

“You may hate me for all I care, but this is the truth.

Meanwhile, the people of Kuwadzana, Harare were the worst brutalised by soldiers in August 2018 when Emmerson Mnangagwa deployed the army to kill many while changing election results, and on the 4th August local clinics told ZimEye.com of how military trucks would arrive at night and officers begin assaulting residents. Zimbabwe’s COVID-19 Positive Case 15 Speaks

Dear Zimbabwe
I am Case Number 15 of COVID-19 in Zimbabwe or at least that is what I was told when the Rapid Response Team visited my home to inform me that I had tested positive for COVID-19.

I choose to remain anonymous to protect my loved ones and what I hope remains of my career should I survive this virus.

As I struggle to come to terms with my infection, I find myself battling a media outrage following the article by the Chronicle titled “Beware of this patient! COVID-19 positive woman gallivanting around town” written by Nqobile Tshili and published on the 16th of April 2020.

This article describes a 34 year old female who initially lied that she was a Nurse but is in fact a Physiotherapist at a local hospital who has violated self-quarantine measures and is roaming around the city and exposing residence.

I am not sure whether I am a victim of tasteless journalism or there is indeed another Case Number 15 who is gallivanting the streets of Bulawayo exposing innocent lives to this dreaded virus.

My story…

I am an essential worker, a physiotherapist and I am proud of my job. On Sunday, the 12th of April 2020, I went to work with a colleague of mine to perform a handover takeover as I was due to start my shift the following day.

We arrived at the entrance of my workplace where we had to pass through the routine screening station before being allowed entry into the hospital. When they checked my temperature they said it was elevated and I jokingly requested that they verify whether their machine was well calibrated as I was asymptomatic.

I asked them to recheck my temperature which they did several time before calling in the Rapid Response Team.

I was asked to sit in the isolation tent where they took down my details and travel history.

I confirmed that I had not travelled outside the country (or even the city), neither had I been in direct contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 nor had I been in direct contact with someone who had recently travelled (although I did highlight that I lived in the same gated community as a someone who had recently returned from the UK but had not been in direct contact with him).

After a few hours the Rapid Response Team eventually came through and collected a sample for testing. Before they left I enquired on when to expect my results and how they would be delivered for which they responded that I should expect a call after a maximum of 48 Hours from the Rapid Response Team.

I was told to self-isolate until my results came out. I went back home and complied with self-isolation, optimistic that the results were negative as I had no reason to assume otherwise.

Monday, the 14th of April 2020 just before midnight I realised that something was wrong after I got a number of messages from colleagues who were asking if I was okay.

I checked my inbox and came across the daily update from the Ministry of Health and Child Care and immediately realised that case number 15 was referring to me as had a number of my colleagues.

I resolved to await official communication from the Rapid Response Team who only came through to my residence on Tuesday the 15th at 1430hrs. Unlike the information circulating on social media and in the Chronicle, they found me at my place of residence.

I expressed my displeasure at getting my results via social media for which they apologised noting that their lab in Bulawayo had sent the results to Harare before informing the Rapid Response Team.

I found that to be dysfunctional and unethical however I focussed on the way forward. I was told to self-isolate as my symptoms were mild and a Doctor would get in touch with me to assist with my case.

I wish to state that as a health worker, I appreciate more than the average person the importance of self-isolation. We spend the greater part of our lives trying to preserve life as such I would not knowingly endanger innocent lives.

As such my shock when in the wee hours of the morning on Thursday the 16th of April 2020, I received a link to the publication by the Chronicle accusing Case
Number 15 on recklessly endangering the lives of residence by defying self-isolation.

Social Media has since been awash with the news which begs me to ask whether there is another Case Number 15 or is this just a case of unethical journalism.

We are all at risk of contracting the COVID-19 virus and more so health workers who despite the risk continue to offer their services to the ailing.

All over the world, we witness standing ovations for health workers who stand in the line of fire against this virus but in Zimbabwe we get accused of endangering lives by gallivanting the streets.

Now, instead of focussing on my health, I am fighting tooth and nail to rectify the false allegations against me so that if and when I do heal, I am able to continue to practice as a health professional without the dark cloud that such allegations present to my career and livelihood.

Yours Faithfully

Latest On Chinhoyi Coronavirus Suspect

A Chinhoyi man has been admitted at Mzari Clinic isolation facility after he presented COVID-19 related symptoms upon screening.

This was confirmed by Mashonaland West provincial medical director Dr Wenceslaus Nyamayaro who also revealed that samples have been taken for testing.

He said:
I can confirm that a man has been detained at Mzari Clinic isolation centre after he was screened and presented symptoms related to COVID-19 only as a precautionary measure as some conditions such as malaria present with almost similar symptoms.

The case is undergoing further management while only test results will be conclusive on what we are dealing with.

Zimbabwe has to date recorded 23 cases while Mashonaland West Province has no confirmed coronavirus case.-State media

7 385 People Arrested For Violating Lockdown Rules

By A Correspondent| The Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed that 7 385 people have been arrested for violating the 21 Day Lockdown regulations.

Said the ZRP:

Will Mnangagwa Extend Lockdown As WHO Sets Tight Measures For Removal Of Coronarivus Restrictions?

Zimbabwe is reportedly gathering information to help it determine if the lockdown must be lifted.-State media

You Can’t Partition Their Blood: Cde Matemadanda

Victor Matemadanda

By Dr Masimba Mavaza| ZANU PF National Political Commissar Cde Victor Matemadanda says various tribes in Zimbabwe gave their all while some died for the liberation of this country and no one can partition their blood hence the need to respect their sacrifice.

Zimbabwe celebrates 40 years of Independence this Saturday, the 18th of April, a day which was set aside to reflect upon the freedom of the nation from colonial rule. Many gallant sons and daughters of the soil sacrificed their lives to ensure that all of us enjoy the country’s hard won freedom.

“Many people died during the struggle for this country, Shonas, Ndebeles, Manyikas and Ndaus etc. They died for the same cause, one Zimbabwe. How do you then now want to partition this country? How do you partition their blood?

“Please let us respect those people who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of this country. They were not stupid. They knew that coming back alive was least expected. They decided to go to fight and die to liberate this country and let us respect them,” Cde Matemadanda said.

He continued:

“Let us enjoy this freedom, this independence with dignity and honour. Let us not try to divide especially on tribal lines. We have seen what it has caused in other countries. People being divided by elements that do not reason. People that do not want to reason can encourage people to be wayward.”

Zimbabwe boasts of a successful Land Reform Programme, a vibrant tourism industry in which locals are participating in and a mining sector in which the our people are thriving.

Homeless Children Escape From Safe Houses Citing Small Portions of Sadza

According to a ZTN report, the homeless children who were taken to quarantine centres have escaped from the homes they being kept citing small portions of food.

Below is the tweet by one of the reporters, Garikai Fadzi, the children said the streets offered them more than what they are getting in safe houses.

This could expose them to the deadly disease considering that they will be in contact with a lot of people against the requirements of the current lockdown which limits movement of people.

Their escape could also expose them to starvation as they survive on begging yet there is little to no activity in the central business district.

Chamisa Demands Space In Zim COVID-19 Fight

OPPOSITION MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa has challenged President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration to stop politicking and admit that it cannot have a solo fight against COVID-19.

In a Facebook media conference yesterday, Chamisa said his party was ready to offer assistance during this period and beyond.

He said his party had temporarily shelved its fight over Mnangagwa’s illegitimacy until the “fight” against coronavirus is won because the country was in a desperate situation, which does not need a partisan approach.

“We face a monumental national crisis that is beyond what we ever imagined and it requires a national team response, a national team approach,” Chamisa said.

“We can’t afford a partisan approach, we can’t afford point-scoring and looking at the scoreboard in terms of political points. There are no points to be scored; there is only Zimbabwe to save.”

Chamisa has been challenging Mnangagwa’s legitimacy since August 2018 when the Zanu PF leader was declared winner in the July watershed poll.

Why Europe Should Not Host 2022 World Cup

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter believes the United States of America could host the 2022 World Cup if the tournament is taken away from Qatar.

The U.S. Department of Justice issued an indictment last week charging that Russia and Qatar paid bribes in order to secure votes ahead of being awarded the 2018 and 2022 World Cups respectively.

The indictment implicated former Brazilian federation president Ricardo Teixeira, the now-deceased ex-COMNEBOL president Nicolas Leoz and a co-conspirator to have received the bribes to vote for Qatar.

The indictment also raised the possibility that FIFA could opt to take the 2022 World Cup away from Qatar, but that would create some logistical challenges and among them finding new hosts.

According to Blatter, USA who are supposed to host the 2026 edition could come in and hold the tournament in 2022.

He told German weekly sports magazine Sport Bild: “Germany could do it. But this would mean the World Cup being staged in Europe again after 2018.

“Europe therefore would not be first choice. The United States could do it instead of 2026. They are capable, it’s not rocket science! Japan could also do it. They also bid to host the 2022 World Cup.

“Fortunately, the 2022 World Cup will only have 32 teams and not 48 as [FIFA president Gianni Infantino] had planned. The organisational effort would not be bigger than 2018.”

Should the United States host the 2022 World Cup as a replacement for Qatar it would create further problems for FIFA as they would then have to find new hosts for the 2026 World Cup.-Soccer24

Why I Joined Mamelodi Sundowns- Malajila

Farai Dziva|Curthbert Malajila says he doesn’t have regrets about joining Mamelodi Sundowns where he spent six years but got little game time.

The Zimbabwean striker was supposed to join Orlando Pirates from Maritzburg in 2013, but Sundowns hijacked the deal on the last hour.

His time in Pretoria started well, playing as a regular in the first season but failed to maintain the momentum in the coming campaigns. He suffered a couple of injuries and had to endure a loan spell at Bidvest Wits.

Despite the inconsistency, the 34-year-old lifted a number of trophies including four league titles and the Champions League.

Speaking to the Chronicle as he reflected on his career, Malajila said: “I was set to join Orlando Pirates and terms had been agreed only for Mamelodi Sundowns to sneak in with a better offer at the 11th hour and I was off to Pretoria.

“Looking at what I won, I have no regrets. The stay at Sundowns gave me fame and success, adding colour to my career.”

Malajila is currently a free agent after he was released by Black Leopards in January.

Billiat Gave Me A Torrid Time In ABSA Premiership -Marshall Munetsi

Stade de Reims midfielder Marshall Munetsi has picked fellow Warriors teammate and Kaizer Chiefs forward Khama Billiat as the best striker he has faced during his time in South Africa.

The 23-year old spent four years on the south of Limpopo, playing in the National First Division for Ubuntu Cape Town for one season before moving to Orlando Pirates in the Absa Premiership.

His best moments came in the final year of his stay in South Africa when he became a regular in the Pirates first XI.

But he only came against Khama when he was at Baroko while the latter was still at Mamelodi Sundowns. They never faced each other in the Soweto Derby.

The France-based star who can also be employed as a centre back revealed this during a question and answer session with Zimbabwe Football Daily on Youtube.-Soccer 24

How I Got My Nickname -Pasuwa

Farai Dziva|Former Dynamos coach Callisto Pasuwa has revealed how he got one of his nicknames – The Italian – during his playing career.

The nickname has since faded with many people now calling him Marabundu or just Mara.

In an interview with the Herald, the 49-year old recalled how he got the moniker from late staunch Dynamos fan Freddy Mugadza about twenty-three years ago.

Interestingly, Mugadza who suffered a heart attack and died over the weekend in the USA was nicknamed Pasuwa because of his obsession with the four-time league championship-winning coach.

“There was this match at Rufaro Stadium back in 1997, when I was still new at Dynamos, and I was introduced as a substitute by coach Mhofu (Sunday Chidzambwa),” Callisto who is now coaching in Malawi explained.

“He was running on the terraces shouting ‘Italian’. That’s how I got that nickname.

“Afterwards, he told me l was his favourite player and person. He would do virtually everything for me, from paying for my haircut to buying goodies.

“He was crazy about me. At first, I wasn’t comfortable with it but, with time, I realised he really liked me.”

Pasuwa also revealed why Mugadza always put a bandage on his head when he attended Dembare games.

He said: “That bandage issue was something else. You know, when we played against Eagle Cement of Nigeria in the CAF Champions League in 1998, I was not supposed to play.

“I had a nagging groin injury but when the game was hardly five minutes old, I was called into action to replace Tichaona Murehwa, who had limped off with an injury.

“Our team doctors had to inject me to suppress the pain on my groin. We won that match 1-0, courtesy of a Lloyd Mutasa goal but not before I injured my head, following a collision with an opponent. My head had to be bandaged.

“I was voted man-of-the-match in that game. Mugadza was following and that’s how he came to spot a bandaged head at all Dynamos matches.”

Coronavirus Alert: Should I Wear A Mask To Protect Myself?

Only wear a mask if you are ill with COVID-19 symptoms (especially coughing) or looking after someone who may have COVID-19.

Disposable face mask can only be used once. If you are not ill or looking after someone who is ill then you are wasting a mask. There is a world-wide shortage of masks, so WHO urges people to use masks wisely.

WHO advises rational use of medical masks to avoid unnecessary wastage of precious resources and mis-use of masks.

The most effective ways to protect yourself and others against COVID-19 are to frequently clean your hands, cover your cough with the bend of elbow or tissue and maintain a distance of at least 1 meter (3 feet) from people who are coughing or sneezing.

How to put on, use, take off and dispose of a mask

  1. Remember, a mask should only be used by health workers, care takers, and individuals with respiratory symptoms, such as fever and cough.
  2. Before touching the mask, clean hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water
  3. Take the mask and inspect it for tears or holes.
  4. Orient which side is the top side (where the metal strip is).
  5. Ensure the proper side of the mask faces outwards (the coloured side).
  6. Place the mask to your face. Pinch the metal strip or stiff edge of the mask so it moulds to the shape of your nose.
  7. Pull down the mask’s bottom so it covers your mouth and your chin.
  8. After use, take off the mask; remove the elastic loops from behind the ears while keeping the mask away from your face and clothes, to avoid touching potentially contaminated surfaces of the mask.
  9. Discard the mask in a closed bin immediately after use.
  10. Perform hand hygiene after touching or discarding the mask – Use alcohol-based hand rub or, if visibly soiled, wash your hands with soap and water.

How Lockdown Is Causing Suffering Of Ordinary Zimbabweans

By Dr Tapiwa Mashakada

The lockdown has invariably caused hunger, misery, stress and suffering of most vulnerable poor.

I understand there are social protection measures put in place to try and mitigate the humanitarian crisis.

Department of social welfare is compiling list of names of vulnerable people who qualify for public relief and assistance.

The Grain Millers Association is distributing subsidized maize meal for sale in different parts of Harare.

This effort is alright but maintaining social distance becomes a huge challenge as people will jostle and stampede to buy the subsidized commodity. This will increase the risk of Covid transmission through contact. After that it will be difficult to do contact tracing.

Let us all come up with possible solutions to this problem. People need food but the pandemic has to be controlled.

SPREADING COVID: Mnangagwa Busy With Another Crowd 7Days After Scientists Warned Coronavirus Travels 4 Metres Across Human Beings | WILL ED SURVIVE?

Using just a thermometre to detect COVID-19, Emmerson Mnangagwa Thursday afternoon drove to meet another close circuit crowd for the launching of an Information Centre in Harare.

His function comes over 7 days after a CDC paper revealed that Coronavirus travels 4 metres across human beings. Zimbabwe’s social distancing rule is just a metre apart, but even that Mnangagwa is violating today, rubbing against several men and women at an intimate 20 centimetre proximity. While Chinese scientists say one COVID patient effectively infects 3,500 others, a leading London researcher says one person can infect a whopping 59,000 people after just 10 layers. This effectively means one person can infect 3,4 Billion people judging that each of those 59,000 will infect their own 59,000 victims. | WILL MNANGAGWA SURVIVE?

Man Relates How Wife Succumbed To Coronarivus Related Illness

WHO Sets Tight Measures For Removal Of Coronarivus Restrictions

Zimbabwe is reportedly gathering information to help it determine if the lockdown must be lifted.-State media

FULL SPEECH: Chamisa’s National Address On COVID-19 And Lockdown

Fellow citizens,

I come to you under very difficult circumstances in our country and indeed in the whole world.
Let us begin by observing a minute of silence for all the COVID-19 victims in Zimbabwe and across the nations of the world.

*Thank you.*

We are in difficult times and a deep crisis. This is a crisis like no other, and there is substantial uncertainty about its impact on people’s lives and livelihoods.

In the days ahead, a lot depends on the epidemiology of the virus, the effectiveness of containment measures, and the development of therapeutics and vaccines, all of which are hard to predict.

Our country faces multiple crises—a health crisis, a financial crisis, and a poverty crisis, which all interact in complex ways, presenting unprecedented challenges to households, companies, traders and financial markets.

The COVID-19 pandemic is causing more than just a medical problem. The pathogen has wrought staggering death tolls and wrecked livelihoods across the world.

Economies across the globe are under severe strain. Supply chains have been radically disrupted, tourism and air travel is paralysed and currency markets are at an all-time low. We are witnessing unprecedented supply and demand side shocks. Global economy engines are stalling. The economy we knew is on a down spiral. The game has completely changed.

The Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe estimates revenue loss of $400 million. The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority recorded 80% booking cancellations. The CZI records that 46% of local firms had their supply chains disrupted by the COVID-19 crisis. Diaspora remittances are likely to decline from the US$635.4 million mark in 2019.

Manufacturers and small-to-medium enterprises face the prospect of not reopening after lifting of lockdowns unless they too, receive massive bailouts.

Consequently, the Zimbabwean citizens are now faced with two impossible choices: death by hunger (as slow shutdowns take shape) or death by disease as this insurgent pathogen indiscriminately sweeps across continents.

There is considerable uncertainty about what the economic landscape will look like when we emerge from this lockdown.

Under the assumption that the pandemic and required containment peaks in the second quarter for most countries in the world and recedes in the second half of this year, the April World Economic Outlook projects global growth in 2020 to fall to -3 percent.

This is a downgrade of 6.3 percentage points from January 2020; a major revision over a very short period. This makes the Great Lockdown the worst recession since the Great Depression and far worse than the Global Financial Crisis.

Assuming the pandemic fades in the second half of 2020 and that policy actions taken around the world are effective in preventing widespread firm bankruptcies, extended job losses, and system-wide financial strains, global growth in 2021 is projected to rebound to 5.8 percent.

This recovery in 2021 is only partial as the level of economic activity is projected to remain below the level we had projected for 2021, before the virus hit. The cumulative loss to global GDP over 2020 and 2021 from the pandemic crisis could be around 9 trillion dollars, greater than the economies of Japan and Germany, combined.

What is hitting us is enormous! It’s the mother of all wars!

The Government of Zimbabwe must pursue a path that saves lives and protects livelihoods, preventing our economy from collapsing and serving our people during this trying moment.
On top of borrowing from global experience and the best scientific evidence, the Government should craft a uniquely Zimbabwean response that is customized and tailored to the circumstances, competencies and capabilities of our great nation.

The citizens must be clear and in the know on what will happen after the 21-day lockdown period including the end result and what they are expected to do or not do.

The following are immediate;

Three broad areas for greater clarity:

*A)* Combating the pandemic
*B)* Measures to cushion families and citizens from the effects of the lockdown.
*C)* Planning Ahead for the reopening of the Economy with particular emphasis on preventing
business closures, company bankruptcy and loss of jobs and re-empowering the informal sectors.

*A) COMBATTING THE PANDEMIC*

*1.* Cushioning of exposed citizens and communicate a clear strategy behind the lockdown and elaborate measures to contain the virus

*2.* Involving all citizens, labour, academics, church, political players & private sector in planning and implementation – a United Team Zimbabwe approach.

*3.* Increasing testing – roll out nationwide testing.

Everyday testing, situation reporting and accurate figures – better reporting is key in assuring the nation.

The key government task is to detect, test, track, isolate, contain and treat.

There is need for transparent testing so that the nation has accurate official figures and no parallel structures for big wigs.

Urgent need to pronounce mass testing mechanism and centres accessible to many from their neighbourhoods like polyclinics and have national geometric to understand which neighbourhoods have been greatly affected and are likely to suffer from the domino effect.

*4.* Government must develop information tool kit for the citizens with a view to create awareness on the progress made towards containing the virus. This information tool kit must be extensively disseminated through various media channels/platforms;

The information tool kit must provide specific details such as number of people tested per day, accurate statistical figures on the outcomes of the tests with hope that this information can provide evidence to show how the country is coping with the disease and possible indication of how the lockdown will last as opposed to be reactive. This is important how especially when the WHO is calling on countries not to rush to open the economy.

? Measures to cushion families and citizens from the effects of the lockdown.

*5.* Cushioning citizens from economic distress and speed up roll out of humanitarian support is vital. We must put in place social protection nets.

*6.* We need a clear statement on who must benefit and who cannot so that all that requires to benefit and get food and monetary assistance without politicizing humanitarian support and food.

*7.* Those who are tested and confirmed positive must get a form of financial support for a month while they fight and the deceased family a government relief fund for their beneficiaries.

Indeed, it is now time that the surplus that Government has made from the 2% levy be used to cushion all workers during these hard times.

*8.* We suggest a new and robust method in the provision of water, food, particularly mealie meal in the townships and countryside.

On our part we have already instructed local authorities to do everything in their power to avail water. We call upon central government to provide the necessary resources forex to realize this important basic necessity.

*10.* We suggest government subsidize and reduce the price of fuel and electricity. We must reduce internet tariff/ price of data during this period of fighting the pandemic.

*11.* Government must create a new model for the informal sector especially fruit and vegetable markets to decongest and decentralize. Perhaps this is a perfect chance for new models of distributing our produce to the communities to be evolved.

*12.* In our context where we have over 5.7 million people in the informal sector, it is important to be elaborate in support mechanisms.

*13.* Providing radio & television lessons dedicated channel for education. Online methods are also vital.

*14.* We urge the full observance of Human Rights, fundamental freedoms, security and dignity of all citizens during the enforcement of measures to fight the pandemic.

*15.* Allow me to salute all workers, including doctors and nurses, our security services, on the frontline for the excellent call of duty under very difficult circumstances. In this context, providing Personal Protective equipment for nurses, doctors, janitors, administrative support staff, police, security services and other state employees at the frontline is so fundamental.

*16.* Risk allowance and tax exemption for all health professionals, security servicemen and government workers on duty at the frontline.

Government must provide specialized support to the elderly including providing sanitizers and masks for all. We urge transparency and accountability in the handling of Covid-19 issues by government.

These are examples of countries who have already done that:

*1. Guinea has effected*

– No payment of rents by workers and citizens in general up to December 2020.
– Government has pledged to cover electricity and water for 3months.
– Free public transport for 3 months.

*2. Ghana*
– Government is covering all water bills for 3 months.
– Some workers were exempted from paying tax for 3 months.

*3. Rwanda*
– Door to door food deliveries for disadvantages groups.
– Provision of free water and electricity.
– Provision of free hospital access.

*4. Botswana*
– Government has put aside US$168 million to assist business to pay workers’ salaries to avoid layoffs.

*5. Uganda*
– No payment of rent until further notice; and
– Distribution of food to vulnerable groups.

As such, if other African governments are able to come up with plans that are sustainable and able to cover all workers; why are we not able as Zimbabwe to do the same?

*C)* Planning Ahead for the reopening of the Economy

A clear strategy on how the economy will be rescued and be made to come back to life, how people will return to work, how children will go back to school. A back to normal life roadmap
– a reconstruction and recovery program.

Creation of an enabling environment aimed at reducing the pain coming with Coronavirus and general economic decay which was at its peak even before Coronavirus. The following should be policy measures:

*(a)* Full dollarisation and removal of forex retention to aid growth in exporting companies.

*(b)* Removal of 2% tax to reduce tax burden to companies and give room for cash flow recovery.

*(c)* Removal of excessive tax heads, for example in the tourism sector there are 22 tax heads while mining has 15 tax heads some of which are unnecessary…this will give room for revenue recovery.

*(d)* Tax incentives such as corporate tax waiver for companies supporting local production and import substitution.

*(e)* Fiscal stimulus package which is in excess of US$5 billion which will form the rescue package since most companies will close.

This is the genesis of the 4th industrial revolution, lifestyles and work styles will change and we must embrace it.

We face a national crisis of monumental proportions. A national challenge requires a national response. Considering the diverse skills and multiple capacities we have in our organization, we are ready to assist.

We don’t want politicization of the pandemic. We will put politics aside and assist the government to craft those measures. The diverse skills and expertise in our organization can be of tremendous assistance to the nation at this critical time.

This is so particularly if regard be had to the experience in government, having former Ministers, our assistance will come in handy. This is no time for politics. Life is precious. We must preserve it.

*TOGETHER* we must defeat *COVID 19.* The future is bright.
Remember to wash your hands, keep good hygiene, maintain social distance and spread the message.
Remember to pray for our country and indeed the entire world.

*God bless you,*
*God bless Zimbabwe,*
*God bless AFRICA.*

Thank you

Soldier Shoots Self After Losing 10 Rounds Of Ammunition

By Own Correspondent| A 1.2 Infantry Battalion soldier in Hwange reportedly committed suicide by shooting himself with a gun after discovering that he had lost 10 rounds of ammunition.

The soldier in question Nicodemus Ndlovu allegedly sneaked out of a police base where he and others were camped for a Covid-19 operation around Hwange rural and shot himself through the mouth last week Wednesday.

Colleagues found his lifeless body after searching for him for hours when he had disappeared from the base after finishing duty at 6am.

A report made to the police stated that Ndlovu was deployed on Wednesday evening and upon completing his shift, he discovered he had lost 10 rounds of ammunition for his gun magazine.

“Nicodimus Ndlovu, a ZNA member based at 1.2 Infantry Battalion in Hwange went for a Covid-19 operation with other army members and police on April at 6pm.

“He finished duty in the morning and discovered that he had lost 10 rounds of ammunition from his AK47 rifle magazine,” read part of the police report.

Ndlovu is further said to have informed his colleagues about the lost ammunition.

He later sneaked out of the base when his colleagues took him to task over how he lost the rounds.

Ndlovu’s body was later found in the bush with a gun wound in his mouth.

Police took his body to Hwange Colliery mortuary before transferring it Sunday to United Bulawayo Hospitals for post-mortem, after which he was driven to his rural home for burial.

Some cases of illegal hunting where poachers use rifles have been linked to some serving and retired members of the security forces, among them rangers, who abuse their service guns to commit crimes.

Some of the cases have appeared in court with serving members among those accused in the cases.

Chinese Doctors Head To Africa To Help In Coronavirus Fight

By A Correspondent- Teams of Chinese doctors have set off to Ethiopia and Burkina Faso to support efforts to fight coronavirus pandemic, state-owned China Global Television Network reports.

Their exact number is however unspecified. Indications are that they are coming from Sichuan Province and Tianjin Municipality.

They left for Africa on Thursday according to China’s foreign ministry.

They will share experience, provide guidance and technical advice on epidemic prevention in the two countries, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian is quoted as saying.

Nigeria also plans to bring 18 Chinese doctors into the country to help fight the coronavirus, but local doctors have voiced their displeasure.

The Nigerian Medical Association said it would be better to make use of the many unemployed or under-employed medical personnel already in the country. It also said the Chinese doctors would not be familiar with the culture or challenges of working in Nigeria.

Reports have emerged of hundreds of Africans evicted from their homes and hotels in the Chinese city of Guangzhou over fears the coronavirus was spreading in African communities.

Nigeria, through its embassy in Beijing, had said it is prepared to evacuate its citizens from China.-BBC

COVID-19: Kirsty Coventry Announces Relief Project For Athletes Hit

ATHLETES in Zimbabwe could benefit from a relief project announced to help provide support during the coronavirus pandemic.

The United Programme for Athletes and Artists in Zimbabwe was announced by Kirsty Coventry, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation.

Coventry, who chairs the International Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission, said the platform was aimed at providing support for both athletes and artists during the pandemic. “We have started an initiative called UPAZIM,” Coventry said. “We want to achieve three things.

“Firstly we want to create unity with all of us and secondly we want to create awareness of all of our athletes and artists. Thirdly we want to create a relief fund for these athletes and artists. I would like to thank the artists and athletes who are becoming part of my team to help set this up.” The coronavirus pandemic has heavily impacted sport, with numerous competitions having been postponed or cancelled due the crisis.

This has had a knock-on impact on athletes, who have seen their opportunities to secure income be affected by the loss of events. In excess of 1.8 million coronavirus cases have been reported worldwide, which has led to the deaths of more than 117 000 people. Zimbabwe has so far announced 14 coronavirus cases to date, with three deaths recorded.

30 Tonnes of PPE, Test Kits And Ventilators On Way to Zimbabwe

An estimated 30 tonnes of personal protective equipment, Covid-19 test kits, gloves, ventilators and other equipment needed to treat Covid-19 patients will be collected from China this week by a chartered flight despatched by Air Zimbabwe tomorrow.

It is understood the consignment was bought by Government to ensure treatment centres and laboratories were equipped.

Airzim spokesperson Ms Firstme Vitori confirmed yesterday that the airline was concluding clearance logistics for the charter plane to leave.

“Air Zimbabwe is finalising a cargo charter flight to China scheduled to depart early Friday morning,” she said.

“Once all clearances are granted the charter flight shall position in Beijing to collect cargo towards Covid-19 in Zimbabwe.”

Government has upped its Covid-19 preparedness following the upgrade of Wilkins and Beatrice Infectious diseases hospitals in Harare to cater for coronavirus patients, with work now in progress on more provincial centres and on a large section of Parirenyatwa Hospital.

Five laboratories have been upgraded countrywide for comprehensive testing.

Madora Harvesters, Gold Panners Defy COVID Lockdown

Insiza residents have appealed for full enforcement of the 21-day lockdown in the district following a mopane worm harvest rush and an increase in illegal gold panning activities in the area.

Godlwayo Community Development Trust (GCDT) director Nkululeko Tshuma yesterday told Southern Eye that people from various provinces were flocking to Insiza district to harvest mopane worms (amacimbi) and to engage in gold panning, flouting lockdown regulations.

Tshuma said there was risk of a coronavirus outbreak in the district since social distancing and general hygiene measures were not observed.

“We have some challenges here regarding COVID-19 as there is serious non-compliance with the lockdown and social distancing. People are flocking to our areas in search of amacimbi and gold. There is a gold rush in one area within our district… there are fears of a COVID-19 outbreak as there are so many people in those areas within our district,” Tshuma said.

He said there was a huge influx of people in ward 6 at Jason Ziyaphapha and ward 3 at Nyamime where mopane worms were being harvested, while in ward 9 at Bhinyapi Mine illegal mining activities were taking place.

“We call on authorities to descend on the areas and enforce the lockdown before the COVID-19 breaks out,” Tshuma said.

Zim Artist Stuck In Germany

By A Correspondent- Multi-disciplinary artist Brian Tadiwanashe Nyanga, affectionately known as “Que”, is holed up in Germany after failing to get a flight back home after completing a two-month creative exchange programme owing to travel restrictions spawned by COVID-19.

A member of Jibilika Dance Trust, “Que” left the country in February for “Ngoma NeHosho Culture Clash”, a project that saw him participate in creative workshops in Germany.

The project focused on originality, identity, consumer behaviour, sustainability, and cultural differences between the two countries. He was supposed to return to Harare last week, but has been failing to get a flight back home though he said everything was fine.

“I’m not sure when I will be coming back home because I failed to secure a flight, but on the upside, I get to continue working on my project here,” he said. “My hosts, the City of Flensburg have been gracious enough to further support our project, running until June.”

Que said his experience in Germany had been enlightening. “I got into space where I had to discover who I really am and the abilities in me, my weaknesses and how to react to different situations,” he said. “This is the beginning of a new era in my life. I now have clarity of where I want to take fashion and sound, and how to make them interact.

“I’m going to push and shape my craft in a way that will benefit my culture from what I learnt from the residency, build a thriving enterprise with my skills and talents.” Germany-based Jibilika director Plot Mhako said they had so far managed to achieve their goals despite being disrupted by COVID-19.

“Que, a fashion designer, dancer and musician connected with a visiting DJ and visual artist Maya Tampler from Flensburg, Germany, during the Mafuwe International Dance Festival held in Harare last year,” he said.

“Their interaction later gave birth to Ngoma NeHosho Culture Clash. The project almost collapsed towards the end due to the coronavirus pandemic. Mhako said the greater part of the project progressed well, with different activities and events taking place in the host city of Flensburg.

The last two major activities, a live collaborative musical concert and a fashion show fell within the lockdown period. “After the government of Germany announced new measures to combat COVID-19, the artists filmed their project and later streamed the originally planned performance fashion show online,” said Mhako.

“They incorporated a message in the performance and fashion show to raise awareness on coronavirus. “The show exported the beautiful creative side of Zimbabwe through fashion, traditional music mixed with urban sounds and dance. This was well received and captured in various media outlets in Germany.”

Que worked with several artists who include Trampler, Butterkup, Jessica Gonsen, Leander Seekings, Wais Labi, Lukas Haak, Yessin, Jomkwan Supoken, Frida Klee, Cindy Jaenicke, and Dany Heck.-StateMedia

Brother Kicks Out Critically Ill Man From Family Home

By A Correspondent- A critically ill Chitungwiza man is living on the street as a result of an ongoing row with his younger sibling over their deceased parents’ house in Unit J, Chitungwiza.

The man, Intergrate Soroti (38), who is a critical diabetes patient, was chased out of his rented apartment and is living outside his late parent’s home with his wife and four minor children.

Intergrate’s brother Hondo is said to have declared war on his sibling and has refused to give him shelter since Monday. Intergrate told a local publication that when he returned home, his brother refused to let them into the house and told him that he and his wife weren’t his relatives.

Hondo also said the house was his and there was nothing Intergrate could do about it.

“He told me that my wife and I aren’t his relatives, hapana zvamunondibatsira nazvo, the Government, the police can’t do anything to me because the house is mine because I am the lawful owner of this house,” he said.

Initially, Integrate and his wife Loice Josias, 32, were living at his parent’s house, and when his mother passed away in November last year, his brother Hondo secretly looked for a place for them to stay.

“He looked for an apartment for me without my knowledge. When I was admitted to hospital, he then moved my belongings to that house without my knowledge, and when my wife returned from the hospital visit, he took her to the new house and told her that he would be paying the rentals, just to get rid of me.

“This past weekend the landlady told me to move out because the rentals weren’t being paid for the last three months, she took our things out.

I tried calling him in vain,” said Intergrate.

His wife Loice said their former neighbors at the rented apartment then organized transport for them to be moved to their family home.

“Zvinhu zvaburitswa panze, vavakidzani vedu vakazobatanidza mari so that we could get transport to bring us back home.

When we got home, we knocked at the gate until they had no choice but to leave us outside because my husband’s brother was ignoring our knocks.

“He hasn’t opened the gate ever since and we are just sleeping outside with his bedridden brother,” she said.

Hondo has been seen several times leaving his house through the back by jumping the precast wall and hasn’t been using the main gate ever since his brother and his family moved there.

Hondo’s phone was unreachable when H-Metro visited their residence, but the team was reliably informed that he had been seen jumping the wall getting in prior to our arrival.

As soon as the news team left, Hondo threw a letter into one of the neighbors’ yards in which he said he was grieving his mother’s death and is bitter over how his brother treated their mother when she was alive.

In his letter, he also said, the war, just as his name, will last till forever as he is selling the house soon after the lockdown and it will end when he dies.

INTERGRATE Soroti’s neighbors have expressed sadness over his brother’s actions saying they fear that he may lose his life on the streets as he is critically ill.

“We are very saddened by the developments that have happened between these two brothers. Integrate is critically ill, literally on his death bed. “He is in fact supposed to be hospitalized.

I could have taken him in, but his state is scary. If he dies in my house then what,” said one of the neighbors who preferred anonymity.

The other neighbors have organized medication for Soroti as his condition is dire. “I had to sacrifice one of my diabetes injections yesterday because his condition was now critical and he couldn’t speak.

For today’s medication, we have put money together, and some of his childhood friends in the diaspora have sent money for us to get him more medicine,” said another.

The other neighbors have put together food for Soroti and his four children who are homeless after being locked out by his sibling Hondo.

The neighbors confirmed that they have seen Hondo leaving the house through the back, jumping the precast wall, avoiding his brother and his family, who are living right outside his gate.

Surrounding churches have donated food to the family, which has set a fire next to the gate where they cook their meals.

Mashwede Loses Over USD$100k to Robbers During Lockdown

MASHWEDE Holdings lost over US$100 000, R42 000 and $14 000 worth of fuel coupons to five workers and nine suspected robbers, who ransacked safes at the premises before vanishing with two firearms and 20 live rounds of ammunition.

The gang allegedly destroyed the closed-circuit television (CCTV) to conceal the offence.

Among the alleged five workers were two brothers related to the complainant, while  two are security guards.

Christopher Mashamhanda (19), Edson Mashamhanda (28), Nevanji Madanhire (27), Dudzai Chidangwara (42) and Martin Mutombwa (23), appeared before magistrate Mrs Victoria Mashamba on Tuesday charged with unlawful entry.

They were freed on $1 000 bail each with stringent conditions and were remanded to April 29.

Two of the suspected robbers have since been arraigned in court. Conwell Kasambarare (28) appeared in court on Saturday, while Musafare Mupamhanga appeared yesterday before magistrate Mrs Sharon Rakafa charged with armed robbery.

They were remanded in custody and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

Seven members of the gang are still at large.

The five hatched a plan to steal from Mashwede Holdings and on March 31, Edson received keys for the volt safe from Madanhire, who had been instructed by the complainant, Tendai Mashamhanda, to collect cash and make certain payments.

After completing the payments, Edson allegedly deliberately failed to deliver the volt keys to Tendai as per instructions and was constantly giving excuses.

He reportedly told the complainant that he could not travel from his house in Chitungwiza to his workplace to handover the keys due to the 21-day lockdown restrictions.

Edson later reportedly travelled to his rural home in Masvingo on April 2, without returning the keys to the safe.

On April 4, Madanhire was allegedly sent by the complainant to Mashwede Holdings to make further cash transactions. After completing the task, the State alleges that Madanhire deliberately left two biometric security doors, which give access to the volt, partially open for easy access by his accomplices.

Later that day, Christopher arrived at Mashwede Holdings pretending to be accessing the WiFi facility from the company offices.

The following day around midnight, he allegedly teamed up with the security guards, Chidangwara and Mutombwa, who were manning the company offices and managed to enter into the offices through the biometric security doors which had been left partially open by Madanhire.

They allegedly opened a small safe that was mounted to the wall and stole US$27 500, R42 000 and 14 000 Mashwede fuel coupons.

They further opened the volt door using a key they got from Edson and opened three safes and stole US$98 000, a revolver firearm, Tokerev pistol and 20 live rounds of ammunition.

In a bid to cover up the offence, the court heard that the trio removed three safes from the volt and took them to the backyard where they broke them using a hammer.

They also reportedly took the CCTV saver to the backyard and destroyed it, before informing the complainant that there had been a robbery at the offices.

Prosecutors, Mrs Nancy Chandakaona, Mr Lovemore Siyamunda and Peter Kachirika represented the State.

Taking the worship house as a safe haven, one of the vendors told the state media that police do not visit the premises since it is known for church services and they keep the gate locked at all times.

“We are selling our food here and some vendors also leave their stuff for safety since the police are visible everywhere during this lockdown,” said the vendor refusing to identify self.

End Lockdown When You Have Capacity to Treat, Trace And Isolate COVID-19 Infected Persons: WHO

Restrictions imposed to control the spread of Covid-19 should be lifted only if health systems have capabilities to test, isolate, treat and trace every contact, World Health Organisation (WHO) director-general Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus has said.

As of yesterday, Zimbabwe had 23 confirmed cases and three deaths after five of the 23 samples tested in Bulawayo were positive.

Dr Ghebreyesus said countries should lift the restrictions if the transmission of the virus is controlled and ensure that outbreak risks are minimal in specialised settings such as nursing homes and health institutions.

There should also be preventive measures especially in places where people converge such as workplaces and schools.

He said countries must ensure that imported risks are managed while communities are educated, engaged and empowered to adjust to the new norm.

This comes as Zimbabwe was working with experts to get critical information that would be used to determine whether or not to continue with the lockdown which exempts those offering essential services.

Said Dr Ghebreyesus: “Some countries and communities have now endured several weeks of social and economic restrictions. Some countries are considering when they can lift these restrictions. Others are considering when to introduce them.

“On both cases, these decisions must be based on protecting human health and be guided by what we know about the virus and how it behaves. We are all learning all the time and adjusting our strategy based on the latest available evidence.”

WHO wants all countries to be implementing a comprehensive set of measures to slow down transmission and save lives.

In terms of lifting the restrictions in Zimbabwe, Secretary for Health and Child Care Dr Agnes Mahomva said the Government had started working with experts compiling data on the impact of Covid-19.

She said the data, compiled through modelling approaches, would be used to study and understand the burden of the disease.

The information would be used to recommend the way forward regarding the lockdown from a scientific and practical point of view.

“The lockdown in Zimbabwe was really to help us strategise how we can better prepare against Covid-19, but in addition to that, it was also looking at issues of managing transmission — both imported and local transmissions and we are happy about what we have done so far.

“Next steps, we are now working with experts to get information that speaks to Zimbabwe, not what is happening elsewhere. This data will tell us whether to continue shutting down the whole country or to focus on certain areas.

“It will also tell us if there are any additional measures that we should put in place but our ultimate goal is to reduce transmissions,” said Dr Mahomva.

Zimbabwe is in the third and final week of the 21-day lockdown where the movement of people has been restricted, except those offering essential services.

The lockdown officially ends on Sunday.

Kombis, Pirate Taxis Defy Lockdown

By A Correspondent- Despite the Government’s efforts to curb the adverse effects of COVID-19, with a lock-down in place, some kombi’s and pirate taxis have sneaked back onto the road.

ZiMetro News has learned that in Chitungwiza yesterday established that kombi’s and pirate taxis, popularly known as mushika-shika, were plying local routes charging amounts ranging from zwl$ 10.

Announcing the 21-day lockdown last month, President Mnangagwa said Zupco buses, as well as Public Service Commission buses, would be ferrying people who offer essential services, but some mushika-shika, kombi’s, and taxis are back.

Some kombi’s and pirate taxis ply St Mary’s-Makoni Shopping Centre via Zengeza route, while others ply St Mary’s-Makoni via Seke Unit L suburb route.

Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi yesterday said it was criminal that kombis were resurfacing on the road without being given a go-ahead, adding that police would descend heavily on offenders.

“We have heard of these pirate taxis and kombis plying various routes illegally. “The police deployed in the suburbs should ensure that there are no unruly elements, where kombis and pirate taxis defy the law.

Those people should be arrested,” said Ass Comm Nyathi. He said police had noted that motorists were using bush roads into the city to avoid police clearance points, in accordance with lockdown requirements.

“Motorists should adhere to regulations. Those who are using dubious means to get into town will be dealt with,” said Ass Comm Nyathi.-Statemedia

Mt Inyangani Mystery Surrounds Deaths Of 8yr Old Twin Boys

By A Correspondent- A family in Nyanga is mourning the death of their 8-year-old twin boys who went to Mount INyangani to recover stray cattle with their father and lost their way home, The Herald reports.

Tanatswa and Tendai and their nephew were reportedly found unconscious by a village search party that was searching for them after they had separated with their father after a heavy downpour separated them.

Manicaland police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the incident and said:

Shingirai Matsiwira (35) of Village 7-Dazi under chief Saunyama, left home on April 10 with his twin sons Tanatswa and Tendai and his nephew Anesu (7).

While they were still on the mountain, heavy rains fell and they lost their way and spent the night there. In the morning, Shingirai’s wife, Tafadzwa Chitekwa informed other villagers that her husband and sons had not returned home and a search party was despatched

When the villagers found them, Shingirai, his sons and nephew were unconscious and they were ferried to Nyanga District Hospital. Tanatswa was pronounced dead on admission while his twin brother died later on that same day.

ZimParks Spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the incident and blamed the tragedy on bad weather. Many unresolved disappearance cases have taken place at Mount Inyangani.-StateMedia

WHO Recommends Extension Of Coronavirus Restrictions

Pasuwa Mourns Loyal Dembare Fan

IT’S a shame former Warriors coach Callisto Pasuwa won’t have a chance to pay his last respects to a man who appreciated both his playing and coaching skills the most.

Freddy “Pasuwa” Mugadza passed away in the United States after suffering a heart attack on Saturday. He is the younger brother of former Dynamos chairman Phillip Mugadza.

But, the current measures adopted by virtually all the countries across the globe to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic could leave Pasuwa, with very little chances of saying goodbye to a man who believed in him.

Pasuwa is holed up in Malawi, which has also declared a three-week lockdown, where he coaches one of that country’s biggest clubs, Nyasa Big Bullets.

“I am saddened by Mugadza’s death. Fate is so cruel, I am one man who was supposed to be at his funeral,’’ he said. ‘‘I will do all I can though to be with the other mourners, if not physically then emotionally.’’

But, how did Freddy Mugadza come to be nicknamed “Pasuwa?”

“There was this match at Rufaro Stadium back in 1997, when I was still new at Dynamos, and I was introduced as a substitute by coach Mhofu (Sunday Chidzambwa). He was running on the terraces shouting ‘‘Italian’’. That’s how I got that nickname.

Afterwards, he told me l was his favourite player and person. He would do virtually everything for me, from paying for my hair cut, to buying goodies.
‘‘He was crazy about me. At first, I wasn’t comfortable with it but, with time, I realised he really liked me.”

Freddy Mugadza just couldn’t miss a Dynamos match before he eventually relocated to the United States. He would always spot a bandaged head and Pasuwa’s shirt number.

“That bandage issue was something else. You know, when we played against Eagle Cement of Nigeria in the CAF Champions League in 1998, I was not supposed to play,’’ said Pasuwa.

I had a nagging groin injury but when the game was hardly five minutes old, I was called into action to replace Tichaona Murehwa, who had limped off with an injury.

“Our team doctors had to inject me to suppress the pain on my groin. We won that match 1-0, courtesy of a Lloyd Mutasa goal but not before I injured my head, following a collision with an opponent. My head had to be bandaged. I was voted man-of-the-match in that game. Mugadza was following and that’s how he came to spot a bandaged head at all Dynamos matches . . .”

Pasuwa was even once summoned by the police to answer to an assault charge after Freddy Mugadza had misrepresented that he was Callisto Pasuwa.

The DeMbare fan had clashed with some Highlanders supporters back in 1999. But, Freddy Mugadza’s love for the four-time league championship winning coach, didn’t end at the stadium.

“We grew to become friends although he was older than me.

When my father died, he phoned begging the family to wait a bit before taking the body to the cemetery,’’ said Pasuwa.-State media

Willard Katsande “Controversial” Picture Torches Social Media Storm

KAIZER Chiefs strongman and former Warriors’ captain Willard Katsande on Sunday torched a social media storm when he posted a picture of himself on his verified twitter account wearing a doek and some feminine hanging pants.

A number of his followers posted their reaction to the rather unusual and unexpected dressing attire by Katsande, with some even questioning the midfielder’s sexual orientation.

“He is an undercover agent, don’t be fooled by these transgender tactics,” wrote a follower Xole on Twitter.

OkaSobethu teased Katsande by posting:
“Hello mama Katsande!”
Another Twitter blogger Senzo Joy Nkutha wrote that Katsande looked like an aunt known for baking delicious scones for gatherings.

Writing on Facebook, Buhle Ncube castigated Katsande for what she said was “a gay inspired fashion”.

“Gay inspired dress code, not gentleman inspired. I think someone needs to advise the captain to be careful where he gets his fashion inspiration.

“He is becoming too overzealous with this fashion thing and is now getting it all wrong. He should stick to football and leave this fashion thing to its owners,” wrote Ncube.

Some likened Katsande to South African socialite and actor Somizi Mhlongo.

Some attributed his latest fashion style to ‘boredom’ caused by the lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic that has seen a freeze in literally all sporting events across the world.

Below are some of the social media comments:
Joseph Mniki: “He is trying to beautify himself anyhow.”

Brendon Mills: “Everyone got their own taste of dressing, what you may think is cool for you may not be cool for me.”

Norest Masuku: “Is that dressing or preparing to compete naParaffin.”
Tapiwa Mapila: “He is a nice person, but hated by many. What he touches people hate.”

Dennis Madzingo: “No that is not fashion, it’s lack of fashion.”
Kalid Shahadat: “Looking like grandma.”

Nicholas Mpofu: “Haa a big no, what will his kids see in such a poorly dressed dad.”
Gibson Masunda: “Somizi can match this.”-State media

How Criminals Are Hacking Facebook Pages

By Technology Reporter| The below outlines some of the hooks being used by hackers to take over Facebook pages.

One hacker investigated by ZimEye.com is a so called, “Indira Shishani.” Shishani fronting with the picture of a young teenage woman, contacted a page promising a lucrative advertising contract to the tune of $400.00.

He said he works for a company called “Facebook Advertising.”

To make this hook more believable, he announced saying he does not need any admin access to the page. He wrote, “You can publish up to 3 Ads/Articles a day through Facebook ads.

“You can earn upto $ 120 per item and $ 240 to $ 400 for 3 items per day.

“I don’t need any kind of admin access on the page.

“All payments will be done in advance. I will just give you articles that are related to your page.”

You have to publish articles from websites like buzzfeed.com, diply.com, boredpanda.com, USA today on your page, he continued.

He also said, “No bad content will be published on your page or is against Facebook policy.

“We have professional content creators who write articles and make videos.”

He then sought to get the email address of the administrator, promising to pay per day and now saying he would pay via PayPal.

He then demanded that for the process to go ahead, the administrator must register for his App. He said:

“This is the official Facebook site. Here is the invitation link.

“You can register your account here.

“Or you can check your mailbox. Facebook has sent you an invitation.”

How he was detected as a thief: Our reporter demanded to speak with him via phone as a pre requisite. Further checks would also be needed to verify real identity, and physical address. (Neve renter a contract with someone you cannot successfully sue. The request was turned down the second time as he said, it is not company policy, to speak with him via phone.

“Mnangagwa Plot To Punish Urban Dwellers Exposed”

Farai Dziva|The MDC Youth Assembly says the harassment of civilians in urban areas by the country’s security forces is a calculated ploy meant to punish urbanites for supporting the opposition party.
