A HARARE-based organisation, Heart of a Woman Trust yesterday donated reusable pads, sanitary pads, and Covid-19 Personal Protective Equipment in the form of face masks and hand sanitisers to 55 women at the Mlondolozi Female Prison housed at Khami Prison Complex.

The donation comprised 55 reusable pads, 110 sanitary pads, 110 face masks and eight litres of hand sanitizers.
Speaking at the donation handover, Heart of a Woman Trust director Ms Verna Zisengwe said the donation will go a long way to assist the women prisoners during the times of Covid-19 pandemic.

“As a Trust we are passionate about women in general and most importantly about female prisoners. We aim to empower them and help them regain their confidence so that they know that there is hope after incarceration.

We donate basic necessities most of the times for these women and we have taken the initiative to further reach out to our incarcerated sisters in Bulawayo especially in these trying times of the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Ms Zisengwe.

She also urged individuals, corporates and institutions to come together and help the targeted group of the less privileged.

“They also need us, prisoners are just human beings like us, they also deserve a second chance in life. So, it is up to you and I to come together and help these women who are incarcerated,” she added.

Ms Zisengwe said her organisation will continue to address women’s plight during incarceration through to release from prison and life beyond bars. She said the aim was to re-ignite the flame in them after release from prison by empowering and preparing them for effective re-integration into society by sponsoring income generating projects.

The Trust was founded in 2014 by a group of passionate Zimbabwean citizens working to address the needs of marginalised groups in society and promote gender equality.- The Sunday News
