The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights are engaging water scientists to ascertain the degree of Harare water contamination the local authority is providing to residents with the intention of dragging the city fathers to the courts.
Last week Harare City Council admitted that it was providing unsafe water to residents.
The city council’s water director Engineer Christopher Zvobgo said Lake Chivero the source of Harare water is “very” dirty due to pollution.
The local authority has been denying that Harare water was contaminated with human waste which finds its way into Lake Chivero through bust sewerage pipes characterising the city.
In an interview with Zimeye.com an official with Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights David Hofisi said they are collecting evidence of the Harare water contamination before suing the local authority.
“This is a case we are working on and we want to gather as much evidence as we can so that we challenge the local authorities with  concrete evidence,” he said.
He said they are looking for independent water engineers after realizing that using state water scientists from the University of Zimbabwe was going to compromise their argument.
“We have been forced to look for private water experts because of the relationship between the state and the state Universities which we feel those who we would have engaged might not be willing to stand before the courts of law and give evidence against government which happens to be their employer,” Hofisi added.
