BREAKING. Chamisa To Attend Independence Day

By Talent Gondo| MDC Alliance  President, Nelson Chamisa has revealed that he will today attend Independence Day Commemorations.

MDC Alliance President, Nelson Chamisa

Chamisa revealed this in his Independence message posted on his Facebook page.

“At a personal level, I will today attend the national event and the national commemorations of this great event,” said Chamisa.

He said because independence was a great day whose meaning and significance goes beyond the narrow strictures and confines of political party affiliation, his party and those in the Alliance would attend the commemorations nationally.

“All the leaders and members of the MDC-T will be attending today’s independence celebrations in the various areas where they will be taking place,” said Chamisa.

“In my case, I will be joining other national leaders in giving this day its true meaning and value. It is a great day that deserves to be commemorated by all of us.”

Zanu Pf Spokesperson, Simon Khaya Moyo is on record extending an invitation to all Zimbabweans regardless of their political affiliation to attend Independence day.

“This year’s commemorations are unique because we are in the new dispensation,” said Khaya Moyo.

The Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Province, Mirriam Chikukwa also appealed to all Zimbabweans including opposition political party supporters and leaders to attend this year’s commemorations arguing that independence was a national event and not a political affair.

Chamisa said there is need for Zimbabweans to restore the full meaning of Independence Day.

“We must restore the meaning of this great day whose appeal must go to Zimbabweans of all shades and political colours,” said Chamisa.

“It is belittling of this great day to give the impression that our liberation was fought for a single political party.”

“It was a truly national liberation that must appeal to the kaleidoscopic and full variety of our political milieu!” he said.

Below is MDC Alliance President full Independence Message.

President Adv. Nelson Chamisa’s Independence Day message to the people of Zimbabwe

Introduction| Zimbabwe did not come cheap. It took a protracted and grueling struggle to liberate the country from the shackles of colonial bondage. The patriotic sons and daughters of this land died while some were raped or maimed in the selfless national duty to liberate this country.Today, we remember them.

Today, we salute the heroic struggle of the people of Zimbabwe in consigning that dark epoch to the dustbins of history.

Today, we mark the advent of our political independence and the stoic gallantry that it took to restore the dignity of the black Zimbabwean.

Today, we stand with pride as a heroic people who took up arms to fight oppression. Indeed, we are a nation of heroes.

Our mission: Completing the unfinished business

As a new generation and as a post-liberation political formation, our mandate and our mission is to be the compass of that struggle by ensuring that the people‘s aspirations are fulfilled.

We so much cherish the aspirational and inspirational values of the liberation struggle to the extent that we take great exception if those sacred values are betrayed or dismembered. At the core of that liberation was the legitimate demand for one-man-one vote and that is why we are pressing for the sovereign expression of the will of the people through a free, fair and credible election.

Our call for electoral reforms is very much attached to the core value of the liberation struggle which was the right to vote.

One cannot cherish the liberation struggle but negate in every way the people’s right to free expression through a credible election. That is tantamount to a betrayal of the liberation struggle whose meaning and import we cherish and remember on this very day.

I wish to restate that our generation’s struggle for democracy stands on the shoulders of the earlier struggle of liberation. As a nation, we liberated ourselves so that we could truly be free in every respect. Therefore our democratic struggle represents our avowed wish to complete the agenda of the liberation struggle and not to negate it!

We only wish to complete the unfinished business of that sacred struggle that we commemorate on this Independence Day. So great was the meaning of that expression that we feel a day is not enough for a nation’s full expression. That is why as a party we in the MDC-T have declared this April to be an independence month. A day’s celebration is an understatement of the significance of independence in our nation’s history.

In the truly new dispensation that begins after the next election; we will remain committed to an Independence month and not a mere independence day. We will commit a whole month to the truly convivial and carnival celebration of the heroism of the people of this land in fighting tyranny and oppression.

Independence: a personal eulogy

At a personal level, I will today attend the national event and the national commemorations of this great event.

Independence is a great day whose meaning and significance go beyond the narrow strictures and confines of political party affiliation. We must restore the full meaning of our independence into a great day whose appeal must go to Zimbabweans of all shades and political colours.

It is belittling of this great day to give the impression that our liberation was fought for a single political party. It was a truly national liberation that must appeal to the kaleidoscopic and full variety of our political milieu!

All the leaders and members of the MDC-T will be attending today’s independence celebrations in the various areas where they will be taking place. In my case, I will be joining other national leaders in giving this day its true meaning and value. It is a great day that deserves to be commemorated by all of us.

A tribute to the people of Zimbabwe

I would want to use this public holiday to pay tribute to the honest and hard working people of Zimbabwe who are slugging it out under very difficult circumstances.

The totality of Zimbabweans must be respected and thanked because it is them who fought the liberation struggle. All Zimbabweans deserve respect, including war veterans, dead and alive, war collaborators, ex-detainees and those who were in their fathers’ loins and in their mothers’ wombs.

We pay tribute to SMEs for sustaining Zimbabweans in the face of brutal mismanagement of the country. We say thank you to the nurses, doctors, teachers, and all civil servants, those serving in defence, in the police, intelligence and in correctional services. Thank you for working under very difficult circumstances.

We say thank you to all those in the diplomatic corps, in the various government ministries and to all Zimbabwean students in and outside the country.

We want to call for discipline, accountability, transparency and uprightness.

We want to thank all religious leaders and congregants for sustaining the moral fabric and dignity of the people. Thank you to all Diasporans, to small scale entrepreneurs, petrol attendants, gardeners, commuter omnibus drivers and their assistants all of whom are often forgotten about.

Soon—and very soon–we will be unveiling a robust policy programme that will address all the challenges that you face.

Happy Independence anniversary Zimbabwe!

Khuphe Challenges MDC-T In Court, Wants Parliamentary Seat Back

Thokozani Khuphe leaves court on Wednesday

By Paul Nyathi|Faction leading former MDC-T Deputy President Thokozani Khuphe has challenged her dismissal from parliament by the Nelson Chamisa faction in the Constitutional Court.

Khupe filed an urgent application at the Court in Harare on Wednesday seeking reinstatement into the August house.

Khuphe through her lawyer Professor Lovemore Madhuku is also challenging what she terms Parliaments’ failure to fulfil its constitutional obligation to protect the security of her seat as a duly elected MP and the leader of opposition.

In the application, Dr Khuphe and the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) are cited as the applicants while the Parliament of Zimbabwe , Speaker of Parliament and MDC-T national deputy chairperson Mr Morgen Komichi are cited as the first , second and third respondents.

“At the core of this application is my contention that the first respondent, in arbitrarily announcing that I had lost my seat in circumstances where no reasonable Parliament could ever act in the same manner, failed to fulfil its constitutional obligation to protect the security of my seat as its duly elected member.

“I am approaching this Court in my own interests as a citizen of Zimbabwe, who was elected a Member of the National Assembly in the last general election held on 31 July, 2013. Notwithstanding the position taken by the first respondent, I believe that, at law, I am still a Member of Parliament,” read the application.

In her application Khuphe further claims that parliament erred in choosing to listen to our side of a party involved in factional fights without consulting the other side.

“From the foregoing, there is a failure by the first respondent in several respects. First, despite being put on notice by me in my capacity as a member and leader of the opposition in Parliament regarding the leadership wrangles triggered by the death of our president, the first respondent failed to fulfil the constitutional obligation of referring the issue to, or waiting for, a court of law before recognising the contents of the letter by the third respondent. Secondly, in the circumstances of this case, the first respondent acted irrationally in recognising the contents of the letter by the third respondent. I submit that no reasonable parliament could ever have recognised the contents of the third respondent’s purported written notice,” said Khuphe.

She said she believed that the matter was extremely urgent as parliament is currently discussing critical matters she wants to be involved in.

“I am the leader of a political party and my absence from Parliament seriously prejudices not only my political career but also the interests of my party and the electorate. Parliament is currently debating electoral reforms ahead of the next elections. I have an electoral mandate to be involved at this crucial period,” read the application.

Khuphe demands that the Chamisa led faction and the parliament bear the costs of her application.

‘That the Respondents (if they oppose this application) jointly and severally pay the costs of this application the one paying the others to be absolved,” read the draft order.

Adv. Nelson Chamisa MDC-T President and MDC-Alliance Presidential Candidate

FULL TEXT: Chiwenga Running Zimbabwe Like A Barrack- Dr Chimhutu

By Dorrothy Moyo| Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s move last night to fire all striking nurses, has been criticised.

The former soldier has been accused of “running Zimbabwe like a barrack.”

Last night the vice president made a statement to recall retired nurses.

Serving nursing practitioners who called in, told ZimEye.com the decision to re-hire retired nurses is nothing but laughable.

Dr Victor Chimhutu of the Zimbabwe Yadzoka organisation said Chiwenga should not have done what he did. Below was the full statement:

Zimbabwe Yadzoka/Mayibuye iZimbabwe is shocked and appalled by the militarization of labour disputes as striking nurses are fired

ZYMiZ is shocked and dismayed to learn that the government of Zimbabwe has fired all striking nurses with immediate effect.

The government of Mnangagwa is willfully disregarding the constitution of the country. Section 59 of our constitution guarantees the right of citizens to petition and demonstrate. We understand the nurses legally filed a notice for job action as prescribed by the labour act and hence the response by the government is not only shocking but appalling.

ZYMiZ is in solidarity with Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA) and the striking nurses and will stand in solidarity with any marginalized groups and sections of our society. The new government is proving to be too heavy handed making rushed and military style decisions. It is no secret anymore that Chiwenga is the main man who is running the country like a barrack.

We have to remind the coup regime that labour issues do not require military solutions. Not every problem is a nail and not every solution is a hammer.

The regime must take note that forces are galvanizing, the people of Zimbabwe are out of the false euphoria. Since the November coup we have seen the rise of a more defined kleptocratic, insidious and megalomaniac regime with no regard to the constitution of the land, rule of law and social, political and economic justice.

As a grassroots citizens movement we will continue to mobilize and stand in solidarity with all Zimbabweans in the margins. We encourage our membership and all living in the periphery of our society to prepare to confront the regime IF it continues to flagrantly disregard the laws of the land.
Mnangagwa must understand that the euphoria of November last year was for the departure of Mugabe and not for his arrival.

The regime stole the people’s revolution that has been simmering up since the turn of the 21st century. We will continue to challenge hegemonic power structures without fear or favour, especially this kleptocratic cum capitalistic regime masquerading as a representing the voices of the people.

We call up peasants, lumpen proletariats, informal traders- this is the time to stand up and be counted. We call up to the labour movement, the student movement- let’s all stand up and be counted.

Simon Khaya Moyo Refutes Rigging Allegations

By Talent Gondo| Zanu Pf Spokesperson,Simon Khaya Moyo has dismissed allegations by self exiled former cabinet minister, Professor Jonathan Moyo that President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga are not actively campaigning because they have a rigging plan.

Writing on his Twitter account, Professor Moyo questioned why President Mnangagwa and Vice President Chiwenga are not on the ground campaigning a few months before the forthcoming harmonised elections.

Wrote Moyo, “Why are Mnangagwa and Chiwenga not on the ground campaigning with polls only 4 months away?”

Moyo gave three scenarios which he alleged the ruling party will implement suggesting that they will likely rig or do another coup.
“They have a rigging plan or the army will do another coup. Maybe they have given up the MID (Military Intelligence Directoraate ), CIO (Central Intelligence Organisation) and Rugeje’s Commissariat surveys give ED 15% of the presidential vote and #JuntaPe 60 out of 210 constituencies,” alleged Professor Moyo.

Khaya-Moyo however refuted Moyo’s allegations and said that Mnangagwa was not yet campaigning because Zanu-PF had not yet launched its election manifesto.

“Campaigns begin when we launch our manifesto. None of us are campaigning because we do not start campaigning before the launch of our manifesto,” he said.

The Zanu Pf Spokesperson however refused to be dragged into talking about what the party did in previous elections.

“I cannot talk about 2013, we are talking about 2018,” he said.

Zanu Pf has in the past been accused of rigging elections using a Russian Firm, Nikuv, an allegation which the party has vehemently refuted.

National People’s Party (NPP), Joice Mujuru who spent over 34 years as a Cabinet minister in former President, Robert Mugabe’s government, 10 of them as Vice-President confirmed that Zanu PF might have rigged previous polls including the contentious 2013 general election although she did not have the knowledge of how this was done.

The opposition parties including tbe Movement for Democratic Change (MDC- T) claimed that previous elections were fraught with irregularities.

ZANU PF’s Kaseke Says Mnangagwa Is Not Presidential Material, He’s A Businessman

By Farai D Hove| ZANU PF’s designate to the Tourism Authority, Karikoga Kaseke has said party leader Emmerson Mnangagwa is better a businessman than a politician.

He said Mnangagwa’s competencies are  in business than in politics.

Kaseke made the comments at a function soon after jetting down from China.

He was quoted by 263Chat saying

“I had never been in a room where the president spoke. This was my first time seeing him speak to the would-be investors. The president was very, very articulate in his approach. The Chinese who attended the two business forums were all surprised by the president who was talking as if he was a businessman. I think the president should be in business than in government, I mean it because when I heard him speaking, he was not speaking like a head of state but like some chief executive of some very big company, a clear businessman, who is very articulate. We think that God knows why he gave us this president to a nation whose people were starving and we in the quasi-government sector, think it was a blessing from God to have a man of his calibre as the Head of State.”

TERRENCE AND S*X VIDEO: Girlfriend Could Have Faked It

LIVEBLAST – watch below

By Staff Reporter| The case of the man who did an act of cruelty that eventually allegedly forced his girlfriend, named Tapiwa to commit suicide, saw contributors yesterday saying the victim could have faked her own death.

People commenting on ZimEye last night claimed the victim faked her death in order to force the man to delete the videos he had uploaded.

” She is alive I was with her just now,” a Harare man wrote.

But upon being telephoned, the man, told ZimEye he does not at all know her and the information came through the victim’s cousin. When questioned on the name of this cousin, the source took another twist this time saying ” I don’t know her name we only meet at the Ximex mall.”

The background of the story is that the culprit man only identified as “Terrence” leaked his girlfriend’s sex tape in what saw the woman pleading for forgiveness. But the man would did not heed and proceeded to leak the tape.

The case was yesterday handed to the police, ZimEye is reliably told. ZimEye.com has obtained confirmation from the Norton MP, Temba Mliswa that he has alerted the police.

“I have just been made aware of it… and what I have done I have immediately tasked the police to give me a proper brief on it…,” Hon. Mliswa told ZimEye.com.

A legal expert from the UK based TanLaw Solicitors, Mr Andrew Nyamayaro gave the below comment:  Revenge Porn has been criminalised in the United Kingdom and in most jurisdictions in the world. In Zimbabwe, the Cybercrime and Cybersecurity bill was tabled in Parliament in 2017. Paragragh 19 of the Bill states that:

“ 19 Transmission of intimate images without consent

(1) Any person who unlawfully and intentionally by means of a computer or information system makes available, broadcasts or distributes a data message containing any intimate image of an identifiable person without the consent of the person concerned causing the humiliation or embarrassment of such person shall be guilty of an offence and liable to a fine not exceeding level ten or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years or to both such fine and such imprisonment.

(2) For the purposes of subsubsection (1) “intimate image” means a visual depiction of a person made by any means in which the person is nude, the genitalia or naked female breasts are exposed or sexual acts are displayed.”

Revenge Porn applies both online and offline and to images which are shared electronically or in a more traditional way so includes the uploading of images on the internet, sharing by text and e-mail, or showing someone a physical or electronic image.

Temba Mliswa

Meanwhile, ZimEye produces audio recordings which expose the man for what he allegedly did.

Chamisa Fingers ZANU PF In Attacking Khupe At Tsvangirai’s Funeral

By Dorrothy Moyo| MDC leader, Nelson Chamisa says ZANU PF planted assailants who attacked his rival Thokozani Khupe at the late Morgan Tsvangirai’s burial in Buhera back in February.

Video footage at the scene show that there were several police officers and no arrests were done.

Chamisa spoke to the South African ANN7’s Audrey Chimwanda earlier this week saying, “we have done everything within our power, we lodged a commission of inquiry which brought startling revelations that the violence we saw at President Tsvangirai’s funeral was actually violence coming from our colleagues in Zanu-PF who planted agent provocateurs to try and embarrass certain of our leaders.

“It’s something we have taken up with the police and it’s something we have not taken lightly even within the party.

“Those people whom we have found to be associated even as they were being mobilised by those provocateurs are certainly going to be dealt with. In fact we have already began the process.”

Knowledge Nyamhoka Launches Constituency Upliftment Fund

NATIONAL, BUSINESS, BREAKING

By Fanuel Chinowaita | Zimbabwe Environmental and Welfare Trust (ZENWE) which Knowledge Nyamhoka of Mutare Central is a trustee, launched an upliftment program in Mutare Central Constituency, at Sakubva Beithal, Mutare last week.

He also launched another program for orphans just before Easter.

Mr Knowledge Nyamhoka described the main objective of ZENWE, “it’s for catering for orphans and less privileged people who are in need of serious attention”.

Nyamhoka also added that the program has already started and their target for now is every orphan in Mutare Central and will stretch to the whole district and province.

“On Easter day we identified and invited 29 Orphans and celebrated the Easter day with them at Beithal Sakubva fitness centre.

“While we were celebrating we noted an Orphan who is 10 years old but living alone in Chisamba singles. We went to his house and see that the boy was living in a very sorry situation.

“As the organization we gave him money and some groceries so that he will have something on the table.

“We again discoverd an old woman from Chisamba singles mbuya nana who is leaving in gross poverty with no one to help her. 6 has 6 orphans below the age of 12 We helped her with groceries and clothes for her and for the kids”, said Mr Nyamhoka.

Dembare Face $ 2000 Fine Over Crowd Trouble

Harare Giants DYNAMOS are facing a $2 000 fine from the Premier
Soccer League (PSL), after their supporters threw
missiles on to the field of play in their team’s chaotic
1-1 draw with Yadah FC at Rufaro Stadium on
Sunday.

The Harare giants are going through their worst
possible form and their draw was their only third
point from a possible 18 this season.
Their woes are set to mount when the PSL
considers the transgressions of the Harare giants’
fans during the feisty encounter, which saw Yadah
finishing with 10 men after their captain Jimmy
Dzingai was red-carded for idiotically returning
missiles to the crowd.

The club was fined the same amount for a similar
offence last season.

According to the PSL’s Standing Order and Fines,
missile throwing by fans attracts a $2 000 fine for
the club.
Dembare supporters started raining missiles onto
the field in the first half, protesting a throw-in
decision that had gone against their team.
That incident would set the tone for the rest of the
match, causing countless stoppages during the
course.

The situation degenerated into chaos during the half-
time break when an police officer unintentionally
discharged a teargas canister, and the supporters
responded by pelting the law enforcement agents
with various objects and running battles ensued.

Yadah players’ delaying tactics, in particular
goalkeeper Steven Chimusoro, irked the home
supporters even more, and they would throw objects
in his direction every time he went down.
There was a long break of almost five minutes in the
second half, as the match officials battled to control
the fans, and during that time, Dzingai appeared to
be losing his head, and returned a water bottle that
had been thrown his way.

He was shown a straight red, and could be further
sanctioned by the PSL for his troubles.
Sadly, the chaotic events overshadowed the brilliant
goals that were scored on the day.

Exciting winger Leeroy Mavhunga got Yadah FC in
front with a brilliant goal when he collected the ball
outside his team’s box, before accelerating into the
Dynamos area, leaving Ocean Mushure and Godfrey
Mukambi for dead in the process.

He passed the ball to Simba Sithole, who knocked
the ball down back for the winger to smash home
first time, for a truly beautiful goal.
Kuda Kumwala’s equaliser was equally gorgeous.

The striker, often maligned by his own supporters,
received the ball with his back on goal, before
making a sharp turn to unleash a bullet shot that
went through Chimusoro’s hands- Newsday.

‘Decision To Fire Nurses Ill-advised’

Terrence Mawawa

Political analyst and former Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition member, Joy Mabenge has described the decision by the government to fire nurses as ill-advised.

“No matter how bad the situation is, authorities in
Zim must desist from making knee-jerk and
emotional decisoins that will fast track the
collapse of an already under pressure public health
system.

The decision to fire all striking nurses,
more so through a press statement is by any and
all standards ill-advised.

Dialogue is the answer
not intimidation. Come now, and let us
reason together,” said Mabenge yesterday.

“Zanu PF is Preaching Peace, To Say Otherwise is Mischievous,” Says Rugeje, Veteran, Ever-Ready To Pounce!

By Nomusa Garikai| “Zanu PF is a political party that respects the liberty of the people and respects harmony and peace. Zanu PF has always propagated love for one another and we thrive on unity. This allegation that soldiers have been deployed all over to assist is not true. We have structures as Zanu PF of our own members who are on the ground,” said Engelbert Rugeje.

A few weeks ago President Mnangagwa also denied that Zanu PF has even rigged elections included the land mark 2008 elections. “Where is the evidence of vote rigging?” He argued with the UK Economist reporter.

This confirms that we are dealing with a party of seasoned thugs. Rugeje was one of the army thugs who became notorious in the wanton violence of 2008 and 2013 elections and for him to now pretend these events did not even happen show that Zanu PF has not changed or repented.

“We have been preaching peace starting with the president and the top leadership of the party. Even in our gatherings are those outside Zanu PF and government, we have always been preaching about peace, peace and non-violence and for anyone to allege that we are fomenting violence in the rural areas it is mischievous,” Rugeje maintain.

How cynical!

So, ED and the whole junta leadership is out preaching peace and non-violence and yet the regime has stubbornly refused to implement the democratic reforms giving the Police their statutory powers to investigate, arrest and charge all those responsible to politically motivated violence. If the Police had those powers Rugeje and many other Zanu PF thugs would still be in jail. President Mnangagwa would not be asking the stupid question; “Where is the evidence of election violence?”

If you are going to rig the elections get your own thugs to police the whole flawed and illegal electoral process. That way, you can be absolutely certain there will be no Police records, no evidence, no arrests, no court convictions, nothing. In the mayhem of the 2008 run-off elections, millions of Zimbabweans were forced out of their homes, beaten up and/or raped. Over 500 were murdered. But because the Police are so politically, they are a department of Zanu PF in all but name, no one was ever arrested.

Indeed, the Police joined their fellow Zanu PF thugs in punishing the people for daring to reject Zanu PF in the March 2008 vote and making sure they never ever do it again. Political Commissar Rugeje has been reminding people of the violence of 2008 and 2013 if they do not vote for Zanu PF in the coming elections.

Zanu PF is a party of ruthless thugs who have enjoyed absolute power for the last 38 years because they rigged elections, cheated and used violence to secure victory. Anyone who thinks the regime will now play by the rules and hold free and fair elections is naïve, to say the least.

The only way to end this vicious cycle of rigged elections is for the country to be forced to implement the reforms BEFORE the elections. The flawed elections must be declared null and void and thus force the country to appoint an interim administration that will implement the reforms. There is no other way out!

“Zanu PF is preaching peace, to say otherwise is mischievous!” says Rugeje, a veteran of Zanu PF thuggery and violence. He can afford to be dismissive, aggressive and arrogant; he will break the peace to punish the mischievous; he knows that he is above the law! – zsdemocrats.blogspot.co.uk

KHUPE vs CHAMISA Final Verdict In 6 Days

By Dorrothy Moyo| The verdict for the Chamisa versus Khupe case is due in 6 days time.

The case which was via an urgent High Court chamber application over the use of the MDC-T party symbol and name, will be finalised next Tuesday.

The two appeared before the Bulawayo High Court judge, Justice Martin Makonese through their lawyers TJ Mabhikwa and Partners, and for Chamisa, Artherstone and Cook Legal Practitioners.

The lawsuit was filed by Nelson Chamisa and Khupe has to date opposed the application.

Chamisa is seeking an urgent chamber order to stop her and her colleagues, Mr Abednico Bhebhe and Obert Gutu, from “unlawfully exploiting and abusing its registered MDC-T trademark, symbols and signs.”

Chamisa says according to the parliament’s mandate, Khupe is not entitled to conduct a congress as she is expected to get clearance from the parliament’s secretariat.

Arguing, Khupe’s lawyer, Professor Lovemore Madhuku, said Chamisa’s lawyers did not submit the MDC-T party’s constitution during the urgent application to the chamber.

He said this was because Chamisa knew that Khupe was the legitimate party leader.

On Health Workers Strike

STTATEMENT:

MDC T Youth Assembly National Health Desk

We learn with shock the continued storms surrounding our public health delivery system.

We also received with heartaching pain the deaths recorded as Health workers down tools in an understandable protest against under payment and undignified working conditions .

While we symphathise with families who are loosing loved ones and Health Wokers whose plight has been left unattended – We call on the government of the day to intervene timeously in this life threatening situation- failure to do so will bring our Nation to its knees. The recent firing of striking Nurses is a kindergarten myopic show of Lunacy that yields no dividends and should be reversed henceforth

FULL TEXT: Chiwenga Fires All Nurses Who Were Striking

HON. VICE PRESIDENT C.G.N.D. CHIWENGA IN HIS CAPACITY AS THE SUPERVISOR OF THE SOCIAL SERVICES CLUSTER ON THE CONTINUING INDUSTRIAL ACTION BY NURSES.

Against the background of a series of meetings involving Government, the Health Services Board and ZINA, which were meant to resolve the industrial action by nursing staff in the Public Health Sector, and the subsequent decision by Government yesterday to accede to the demands made by the striking nurses, Government regrets to note that the industrial action in this essential service sector has persisted. What makes the whole action both deplorable and reprehensible is the fact that, as agreed yesterday, Government today released and transferred a sum of $17 114 446 into the account of the Ministry of Health and Child Care for on-payment to the striking nurses.

While this demonstrated good faith on the part of Government, the prompt transfers which have been effected against demonstrable economic challenges facing our Nation has not, quite surprisingly, persuaded the striking nurses to go back to their work stations in the interest of saving lives and helping hapless patients placed under their care. Government now regards this lack of remorse as politically motivated, and thus as going beyond concerns of conditions of service and worker welfare.

Accordingly, Government has decided, in the interest of patients and of saving lives, to discharge all the striking nurses with immediate effect. Further, Government has now instructed the Health Services Board to speedily engage, as appropriate, all unemployed but trained nurses in the country. It has also authorized the Board to recall retired nursing staff into the service.

Funds originally released to meet demands of the striking nursing staff will now be redirected and allocated towards meeting the costs of effecting this new directive and arrangement which takes immediate effect.
In the meantime, Government pays singular tribute to all nurses who have loyally remained at work, and to those from the ranks of the striking nurses who have heeded its call for them to return to work. Their commitment to duty and patients, both pointing to a deep regard for life as required by their professional oath, is noted and much appreciated.

Government also appeals to all those visiting public health institutions to exercise patience while services are being restored and brought back to normalcy. Equally, in view of sporadic cases of cholera reported in different parts of the country, all families and individuals are being encouraged to observe strict standards of hygiene in their homes and in all public places. Where symptoms suggest any infections, these must promptly be brought to the attention of health personnel at nearest service points.

BREAKING – Govt Fires All Striking Nurses

By Farai D Hove| The Zimbabwean government has fired all striking nurses.

The announcement was made Tuesday evening that all striking nurses are with immediate effect no longer employed. The Ministry Of Health in their statement read out on the state media said, the nurses were fired after rejecting a $17,1 million offer.

Commenting on the development, MDC standing committee member Chalton Hwende told President Emmerson Mnangagwa, “Zimbabwe is now open for lunacy.”

Aspirant for Harare East MP seat, Linda Masarira lambasted Mnangagwa saying, “Firing striking nurses is not the solution to the health crisis in Zimbabwe. Shame on you Solve the crisis in the health sector and attend to the nurse’s grievances Labour injustice is a result of coup capitalists running the country,” she wrote on her Twitter portal.

By Paul Nyathi| President Emmerson Mnangagwa finally made a public appearance without his infamous “Scarf Of Many Colours” after months of dragging the scarf with him everywhere he went.

Emmerson Mnangagwa today

Mnangagwa made the scarfless appearance at the City Sports Centre in Harare where he spent the day with thousands of children ahead of the country’s 38th Independence celebrations.

Mnangagwa hailed his meeting with the children claiming that the children motivated him to give hope to the country.

“This afternoon, ahead of Independence Day, I spent time with our beloved children from all over the country.

“I saw in their eyes the spark of hope. The spark that returned to our nation in November and grows brighter each day.

“It is all of our responsibilities to ensure that these eyes will shine with opportunity, aspiration and excitement for the future of our nation.

“With these sparks, we are creating a bright future for all in our new Zimbabwe – a free, proud and thriving middle income nation, characterised by decent jobs, sustainable income and free from corruption.

Chamisa’ s Independence Message

Let us
commemorate our Independence
Tomorrow is Independence Day and every patriotic
Zimbabwean must take time to reflect on the
supreme national sacrifice in which the sons and
daughters of this land paid the ultimate sacrifice
while some lost their limbs so that the whims of
future generations could walk again.
Some of us are proud of the liberation legacy and the
successful quest by Zimbabweans to reclaim their
dignity from a oppressive colonial regime.

Nelson Chamisa

Even as a post-liberation political formation, we
stand for the continuation and perpetuation and not
the negation or opposition of the liberation project.
We are proud and patriotic Zimbabweans and
tomorrow we will be joining the rest of the nation in
paying tribute to that invaluable chapter in our
national story.
Our only wish is to complete the outstanding
business of our independence so that political
independence would truly mean the advent of
freedoms and the proper respect for the right to vote
which was at the core of our protracted national
struggle. The land and the right to vote were at the
epicenter of the people’s struggle.
In many ways, the sanctity of our struggle has been
undermined, if not hijacked, by a selected few who
have betrayed the noble aspirations of Zimbabweans
when they waged that brutal struggle. As a post-
liberation political formation, we anchor our own
struggles on the liberation struggle, its values and
aspirations.
We truly honour the liberation effort.
Tomorrow, we will be joining the rest of the nation in
commemorating the heroic act of Zimbabweans in
consigning colonial oppression to the dustbins of
history. The only challenge is to finish the
outstanding business of that struggle for which so
many Zimbabweans died.
Going rural: Thank You Masvingo
True to our promise of going rural in this election
campaign, I had an eventful weekend in Masvingo,
starting with the chastening rally at Nyika growth
point in Bikita on Friday and then another huge-turn-
out at Jerera in Zaka the following day.
Elsewhere, the MDC-T and MDC Alliance leaders
were addressing huge crowds in the rural hinterland
from Nkayi in Matabeleland North, Mount Darwin in
Mashonaland central, Gokwe in the Midlands,
Hurungwe in Mashonaland West to Makoni in
Manicaland province. We have pledged to largely go
rural in this election and over the weekend, we were
doing precisely that by honouring our solemn pledge
to go rural in our campaign.
My visit and interactions with the people in Masvingo
brought a lot of issues to the fore.
The first was the hunger for change, which is now a
national chorus.
What was glaringly palpable was the self-evident
collapse of the national infrastructure and the
fracturing of our communities. I saw collapsed
services, poor roads and dilapidated hospitals.
I saw for myself the deadening poverty pervading our
rural areas and how Zimbabweans are struggling to
put food on the table.
I saw the marginalization of the people and the
abuse of our traditional leaders who are being used
to intimidate villagers by collecting serial numbers of
the voter registration slips.
I saw command politics at play, as evidenced by the
use of food as a political weapon in the rural
communities. Known and identified government
bureaucrats have been deployed to advance a
partisan agenda and to strike fear in the rural
communities.
Bikita in Context
On Friday, I was chastened by the huge turn-out at
Nyika growth point in Bikita. I had occasion to
engage the people and our message centred on the
need for electoral reforms as well as our policy
agenda that will be undergirded by the tripod pillars
of transformation, opportunity and prosperity.
After the rally at Nyika, I had occasion to visit
Silveira Mission hospital, where I was born some 40
years ago. It was a nostalgic moment and I saw for
myself how things are getting worse in our hospitals.
For example, there were three beds in the ward
where I was born but I realized on Friday that only
two were left as the third had since broken. Things
have taken a debilitating turn since I was born at
that hospital in rural Bikita, where my mother comes
from.
I saw 22 expecting women in the maternity ward,
who are being asked to pay $50 for the national
service of giving birth to the future leaders of this
country.
Our incoming government will ensure that we scrap
such fees charged on women for performing a
national service.
I took time to pray with a 9-year old Mercy
Chigwende, a young girl with the rare condition of
cancer of the blood. Her parents are finding it
difficult to meet the huge bills where she is being
charged $400 per week. I assisted with some
money but money alone is nothing. I had to summon
the providence of God to intervene to save the life of
the innocent girl.
On Saturday, I attended Holy Communion at the
church conference in Chatsworth, where I had
occasion to listen to a powerful word and found time
to pray with the church elders and pastors.
I would wish to restate my unstinting belief that
politics should not usurp church platforms to peddle
a partisan agenda. Church platforms must be
exclusively used for the word of God. Anything else
is tantamount to defiling the sacred and sanctified
holy places of worship.
In the afternoon I addressed a rally at Jerera Growth
Point in Zaka where again I had occasion to sum up
our promise to the people of Zimbabwe when we
form the next government in September. We pledge
to restore the dignity of Zimbabweans, to create jobs
but first of all to ensure that we create a proper
environment for the people to express their sovereign
will in a truly free, fair and credible election.
I also found time to lay wreath on the grave of Crison
Mbano, a political violence victim and one of our
party activists in Zaka who was killed in the
despicable Zanu PF-orchestrated violence of 2008 in
which so many Zimbabweans died. I saw some of
the survivors of the brutal violence in which Mbano
and others perished.
Indeed, I was sorely touched by their plight as well
as that of the many thousands of Zimbabweans
throughout the country who suffered a similar fate.
Going rural again
This coming weekend I will be interacting with the
people in yet another rural community but first, I
have to join my fellow citizens in the important duty
of commemorating our independence.
Indeed, we must spare a thought for the brutal but
heroic struggle that we waged against an oppressive
colonial system.
Happy independence month, Zimbabwe!

Fresh Students Riots

Rioting Zimbabwe School Of Mining Learners.

By Paul Nyathi|Students at the Zimbabwe School of Mines in Bulawayo disrupted operations at the institution as they engaged in a demonstration over alleged poor service delivery by the school administration.

A report by the state owned ZBC news indicates that picketing students cordoned off entrance to the administration offices while some boycotted learning and spent the day roaming around the school premises.

The students are reported to have raised a number of concerns from exorbitant fees, lack of understanding on the part of administrators when it came to payment deadlines and poor conditions they were being exposed to, among other issues.

While some accused their Student Representative Council (SRC) of working in cahoots with the school authorities, a member of the body, Mutsawashe Nemadire, denied the charge, indicating that they were trying everything to have the students’ concerns addressed.

“We are working on them and we are pushing as well. We are talking to management. We are sorting out things but everything is going on well. That’s one thing I can promise,” Nemadire, told the ZBC.

After almost three hours of discussions between the school authorities and the students’ representatives, efforts to address the demonstrators yielded no joy as the students walked away arguing that the resolutions were not satisfactory.

The Chief Executive Officer of the institution Mr Dzingirai Tusai noted the students were not being sincere as most of the issues they were raising could be easily addressed differently.

“There was no need for that type of voicing of their concerns because they were just simple concerns that could have gone through to administration and to the training and operations department on how they are affected in the institution,” Mr Tusai said.

With a stalemate declared, it appears the students will continue with their defiance and hopes are the impasse will soon be resolved to pave way for resumption of operations.

“Zimbabwe Has No Capacity To Allow For Diaspora Vote”: Moyo

By Talent Gondo| Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, retired Lieutenant-General Sibusiso Busi Moyo has revealed that while the Zimbabwean government is setting up the modalities to ensure that it’s citizens living abroad vote in the forthcoming plebiscite, government had no capacity to allow for diaspora vote this year.

Moyo said this while speaking to Bloomberg TV in New York, where the minister is attending the Commonwealth Heads of State Summit.

“The Constitution allows them to do so but for now, we are still working on the logistics, we are still incapacitated to make sure all Zimbabweans in the capitals of the world are able to vote,” said Moyo in an interview.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is on record calling on all those in the diaspora to come back home and vote arguing that Zimbabwe does not have the capacity to facilitate and implement the diaspora vote.

This is despite that the Constitution guarantees and allows for those in the diaspora to participate in the country’s democratic processes including voting.

“AfCFTA Game Changer for Africa”: Masiyiwa

By Talent Gondo| Zimbabwean entrepreneur and billionaire, Strive Masiyiwa, has described the recently signed African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which the Zimbabwean President, Emmerson Mnangagwa also signed as “Africa’s game changer” which had the potential to grow the continent’s economy.

On his blog post, Masiyiwa  said that the agreement is a big deal for Africa whose benefits included independence from aid and borrowing, better food security, increased job opportunities and increased croos border trade among a host of other economic benefits.

“If implemented right, the AfCFTA has opened a unique door for young entrepreneurs. You will not have to struggle as some of us have over the decades, to develop huge companies that will expand quickly across our continent,” he said.

The Econet Wireless Group Founder said the trade agreement presented Africa with the opportunity to create more and better jobs, increased cross-border trade with less red tape such as at customs and ports, better food security and more efficient regional supply chains whose benefits included promoting investment, growth, and job creation.

“Africa stands to benefit as this will bring more independence from aid and external borrowing, innovation, protection of intellectual property… the list goes on,” said the Telecommunications mogul.

Masiyiwa also said that if implemented right, the agreement means more jobs, easier movement of people and goods across Africa, better prices, and independence from aid and borrowing.

President Mnangagwa was one of the African Heads of States who signed the agreement on 21 March 2018 when he attended the African Union (AU) Extraordinary Session of Heads of State and Government.

A meeting was held at the council premises to deliberate on the matter last week,” a council sources told ZimEye.com.

Josiah Hungwe

Terrence Mawawa, Masvingo

Controversial Masvingo State Minister, Josaya Dunira Hungwe has promised to distribute residential stands to Zanu PF officials in a calculated move to drum up support for his cousin.

Hungwe’ s cousin Goddard Dunira is vying for the Masvingo Urban Parliamentary seat and he is facing stiff competition from Edison Zvobgo Junior who is also eyeing the same seat.

Impeccable sources told ZimEye.com Hungwe was determined to campaign for his cousin and had promised to parcel out 36 residential stands to senior party officials in the constituency.

Dunira however said the claims were unfounded and fictitious.

“There is nothing like that. The plans are implemented by senior government officials at national level,” said Dunira.

By Talent Gondo| As the country tomorrow celebrates 38 years of Independence, the Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Province Minister, Miriam Chikukwa has extended an invitation to all Zimbabweans including opposition political party leaders and their supporters to attend this year’s Independence celebrations slated for the giant National Sports Stadium in Harare.

“As your host, I am inviting everyone regardless of your political affiliation to come,” she said.

“ Independence is for us all and I am appealing to everyone to come for these celebrations because we are all Zimbabweans and this is our day,” she said.

Opposition political parties have in the past snubbed attending Independence commemorations citing “personalisation” of national events by President Robert Mugabe and Zanu Pf.

In his independence message posted on his Facebook page, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said this year’ s commemorations come in a new era where there is more freedom, openness and opportunity.

“In this new era, we must be liberated not only from outside but from within, from hate, prejudice and discord. This year’s celebrations carry even greater reasonable, as we have entered a new period in our history, a period of freedom, openness and opportunity,” he said.

MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa also issued his Independence message revealing that the Alliance leadership will tomorrow join the rest of the nation in commemorating independence day.

“Our only wish is to complete the outstanding business of our independence so that political independence would truly mean the advent of freedoms and the proper respect for the right to vote which was at the core of our protracted national struggle,” said Chamisa.

Billionaire Okays Mnangagwa’s Deal

By Dorrothy Moyo| Zimbabwean billionaire and Econet founder, Strive Masiyiwa has okayed one of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s latest deals signed in March.

Masiyiwa said the recently signed African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), signed by the president is a sure big jump. Masiyiwa said the deal has huge potential to grow the economy of the continent. He wrote, “the launch of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) on 21 March was a really big deal.

“It may not yet be drawing the attention of people going about their daily lives, but believe you me, if it is executed properly, it will affect all of us.

“We have begun (as Africans) to put in place the building blocks of what will become the world’s biggest single market within 100 years. Today it is nearly $3Tn and 1,2bn people. It will be over $100Tn by the turn of the century, with over 4bn consumers.”

The respected Senior High Court Judge, Justice Nicholas Mathonsi ruled that Tawanda Mawere (32), must face disciplinary proceedings as he stands accused of robbing Apostle Charles Chiriseri’s corpse of $200 following the fatal traffic accident which happened one an a half years ago.

In his ruling Justice Mathonsi said, “the position of our law at the moment clearly states that a police officer who has been prosecuted in the criminal court is still liable for disciplinary action in terms of the Police Act. The Police Act deals with the enforcement of discipline and the first respondent (Comm-Gen Matanga) has the administrative authority to arrest indiscipline within the police force…What this means, therefore, is that the applicant is standing on sinking ground and the application for an interdict must, therefore, fail as what is lawful cannot be interdicted.”

More Health Workers Join Nurses Strike

By Talent Gondo | As the ongoing strike by nurses enters it’s second day, Sisters In Charge at the country’s biggest government health center, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals have also downed tools citing “burnout” concerns.

According to a letter directed to the Principal Nursing Officer glimpsed by ZimEye, the Sisters In Charge have indicated that they are joining the ongoing industrial action by their juniors because there is too much work which has seen them working round the clock without any rest.

“As Sisters In Charge at Parirenyatwa, we are over whelmed in rendering quality total nursing services,” said the Sisters In Charge.

“This is in view of the ongoing industrial action by the junior nurses. Currently we are the ones managing 2 or more wards without any rest resulting in us working round the clock.”

The Sisters In Charge indicated that because of this, they were also downing tools until their juniors’ concerns had been resolved.

“Due to the burnout, we are with immediate effect withdrawing our services,” they advised.

The Sisters In Charge’s actions comes as the government has issued a directive to the striking nurses to go back to work and make way for harmonius industrial relations.

The Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr David Parirenyatwa said the nurses should go back to work since government is treating their grievances with urgency.

Aspiring Gweru Urban MP Bankrolls Choir of Churches Function

Nkosikhona Ndlovu dished out $3,000

By Brenna Matendere| An interdenominational choir of churches over the weekend recorded a live DVD of a compilation album featuring over 20 tracks at an event that was over-subscribed by Christians in the country’s third largest city- thanks to independent Gweru Urban parliamentary candidate, Nkosikhona Ndlovu who sponsored the programme to the tune of $3 000.

The group’s stage name is New Creation Asande Choir.

The 25 member choir comprised of fine song birds drawn from churches such as Anglican, Harvest House, Dutch, Seventh Day of Adventists, Catholics and several others from pentecostal denominations. The Live DVD is titled Winning Souls to Christ.

Gospel Diva Mercy Mutsvene’s young brother Kuda; former Zimpraise band member Mai Maningi; Moreen Sifelani and Anthia Mushungupa were some of the famous figures in the show biz who were part of the choir.

Brightness Ncube, the choir’s executive president told this publication that the event had surpassed their imaginations in terms of attendance. He also thanked businessman Nkosi Ndlovu for the sponsorship of the recording and camping expenses.

“We were camped at a private residence paid for by businessman Nkosikhona Ndlovu for a week and per day the charges were about $400. We could not have afforded that kind of money and so our hearts goes for Mr Ndlovu whom we popularly call Umdala Wethu. He also supplied us with instruments and when put together the sponsorship runs into thousands of United states dollars,” said Ncube.

Tino Mhungu, the spokesperson for Mr Ndlovu said the businessman will continue to sponsor such events in order to uplift lives of youths, middle aged people and women in Gweru.

“Well Mr Ndlovu has in the past made such gracious gestures. He has in the past sponsored talent shows and workshops for the young. He is dedicated towards supporting the church and turning people’s lives to Jesus Christ. On the other hand, he wants to see talented people being given the chance to rise to the occasion and work towards decent survival,” he said.

Mr Ndlovu is set to contest for the Gweru Urban constituency parliamentary seat as an independent candidate and he is on record for saying he will continue to work for the development of the city irregardless of how he fares on the election day.

High Court Declares Grandkids Can Inherit From Grandparents

The High Court of Zimbabwe has ruled that grand children can inherit from their grandparents.

High Court judge Justice Hlekani Mwayera passed a landmark ruling giving passage to grandchildren, in cases where the parents would have died first.

Justice Mwayera said children are entitled to inherit the share that their parents would have received if they were still alive.

The ruling was on the estate of the late Mrs Bellinah Mhlanga who died in 2010.

The case will now be a precedent for others to come.

Justice Mwayera said, “According to the per stirpes principle, the grandchild, whose parent predeceased the deceased, has a right to inherit by representation. He or she inherits what their deceased parent would have inherited, had they been alive.

In this case, the grandchildren of the late Bellinah Mhlanga have a right to step into their deceased mother’s place and inherit from their grandmother under the “per stirpes” principle. The death of their mother does not take away their bloodline and descendant rights to inherit.Even if there is no will and last testament, the right to inherit by representation is based on the blood relationship line.” – state media

IS HE TELLING THE TRUTH? – Zim Airways Offices At Gumbo’s Daughter House “Just A Business Deal,” Says Gumbo

Joram-Gumbo

By Paul Nyathi| Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Joram Gumbo says that it is mere coincidence that the controversial Zimbabwe Airways’ head offices are at his daughter’s private premises.

Speaking in an interview on ZiFM Stereo on Monday evening Gumbo battled to convince program director Larry Kwirirayi why the airline business is operating at his brother’s daughter Mavis Gumbo’s Gletwin house.

“They looked for accommodation all over and they were impressed and liked to have the accommodation at Mavis Gumbo’s house,” said the Minister.

Gumbo said that he had no influence at all in the deal claiming that the company was referred to her by estate agents and they liked the premises.

“It was all purely a business deal that was done through estate agents and why Zim Airways took up the premises as I understand is because it is spacious, it has got offices and they are using it as accommodation for their staff,” said Gumbo.

“I don’t think anybody who is a Gumbo or related to a Gumbo or related to somebody in any position will be barred to do any business because there is a relationship. It’s not by me, it doesn’t benefit me, it’s her house, it’s being rented out, it’s taken from estate agents. What’s wrong with that?”

Gumbo said Zimbabwe Airways were operating from Air Zimbabwe offices and they had to leave so as not to cause confusion.

“In order to separate this deal at that time when we had not come to this situation where we are at today, they had to move out,” said the Minister.

Asked what procedure was used to decide that Mavis Gumbo’s house should be used as Zimbabwe Airways offices Gumbo said:

“Government is people and institutions or corporates are run by people and offices are for corporates. Those running Zim Airways were looking for offices. I don’t know where they could get offices other than houses and that’s what they did.”

The new airlines has been in a cloud of confusion since its first aircraft was delivered from Malaysia last week.

There are suspicions of massive corruption in the setting up of the airlines with former President Robert’s family linked to the dealings on the plane.

The Mugabe son in law is the one who flew the the plane to Harare. Simba Chikore quit his job as Chief Operations Officer of Air Zimbabwe shortly before Zimbabwe Airways was founded.

No House Demolition Without A Court Order, Court Decides.

The court order against Chitungwiza municipality

By Paul Nyathi|The Chitungwiza Magistrates courts on Monday issued a judgement blocking council from its persistent demolition of residents’ houses.

The court delivered a judgement in favour of residents under case number 70/18 where Chitungwiza and Manyame Rural Residents Association (CAMERA) was representing some of the 110 residents whose houses were earmarked for demolition by the municipality.

This follows the 9th of February 2018 provisional order which was granted barring the municipality from evicting occupants and demolition of structures in Chitungwiza.

The Magistrate ordered that “Chitungwiza municipality must refrain and desist from destroying and or authorizing or causing the demolition and or destruction of applicants’ homes without a valid order to that effect from a competent court of law”.

The municipality was also instructed to bear the cost of the suit.

In a statement, Chitungwiza and Manyame Rural Residents Association (CAMERA) applauded the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) for representing the residents of Chitungwiza in this case.

“This is a landmark ruling which affirms the supremacy of the constitution and promotes the upholding of the fundamental human rights and freedoms,” said the residents representatives.

Chiwenga Didn’t Want To Be Vice President – Shiri

Former air force boss Air Marshall  Perrance Shiri has said that Vice President Constantino Chiwenga did not want to be VP.

Instead of taking over government, he chose to return to the barracks after completing the Operation Restore Order last year.

The development is to fall hard against the backdrop of news developments that allege that army generals do not at all want Emmerson Mnangagwa to continue his presidency after the 2018 elections. Latest developments claim that there is now a second faction in the ZANU PF party, that of military bosses who are wrestling power from Lacoste faction.

Speaking at Chakari Stadium in Mashonaland West on Sunday, Shiri praised Chiwenga for not seizing power but following due procedure during Operation Restore Legacy.

Shiri, quoted by the state media said, “General Chiwenga is the person who orchestrated Operation Restore Legacy.

“He is a principled man who does things in honesty. If it was someone else, he could have taken over power, declaring that he was in charge (of State and Government).

“There was nothing that could have stopped him since he was in charge of the army. General Chiwenga is a person who is politically mature and with the people and country at heart. Due to political orientation, he understood that hove huru dzinofamba nemurongwa (leadership renewal follows laid down procedures).

“As a result, the party chose President Emmerson Mnangagwa to lead the party, while VP Chiwenga wanted to return to the barracks. However, President Mnangagwa appointed him Vice President and second secretary of the ruling Zanu-PF party.”

Mukupe Assaults Government Official Over Cash Dispute

NATIONAL NEWS

NATIONAL NEWS

FINANCE deputy minister Terence Mukupe was recently arrested and fined for assaulting his ministry’s finance director, 58-year-old Ignatius Mvere, for allegedly giving him a “paltry $910 travel allowance”.

The incident, according to police documents shown to NewsDay, happened on March 29 this year, shortly after Mukupe had returned from a three-day Sadc business trip to South Africa.

Upon his arrest, Mukupe paid an admission of guilt fine of $30 on April 10 at Harare Central Police Station and was issued with a ticket in the Z69J book number 1308983B.

The matter, which was recorded under CID Law and Order Harare Central CR 2321/03/18, happened at the New Government Complex when an angry
Mukupe stormed Mvere’s office, demanding an upward review of his
allowances against Treasury circular standing orders.

“On the day in question, the accused came to my office, complaining about insufficient funds allocated to him and ended up assaulting me,”

Mvere wrote in his affidavit to police.
“Prior to this incident on March 25, the accused travelled to South Africa on business attending Sadc meetings and returned on March 28. According to
our Treasury circular, I had given him $910, but he insisted I must give him more than that. I could not give him more money since he had no reasonable grounds or a letter from the Minister of Finance authorising me to pay him more than what us on the Treasury circular.”

It is also understood that the deputy minister hurled insults to Mvere, saying: “You are very stupid, why did you give me less money while travelling to South
Africa”, before getting closer and clasped his neck and pushed him against the computer table.

Mvere added: “I recall on March 29, 2018, at around 0745hrs, I reported for duty to my office as usual.

At around 1230hrs, while in the office together with Garikai Mukombero who is the human resources assistant in the ministry, the accused Terence
Mukupe, banged my door and entered into my office.

His face looked angry. I immediately stood up from my chair and greeted him, but he did not answer. He moved towards me and I tried to move back but there was no way out.”

According to the police records, Mukupe grabbed his victim by the collar and banged his head on the computer desk before Mvere’s workmates, human
resources director, Stewart Jailos, Mukombero and his aide William Gondo intervened and stopped the
fight.

Jailos corroborated Mvere’s narrative in a separate affidavit, saying: “Mukombero appeared at my door
shouting in haste that the deputy minister was
choking and beating up Mvere in his office. I
immediately ran to Mvere’s office whereupon I saw
accused Mukupe’s hands clasped on Mvere’s neck
almost chocking him at the same time breathing a
barrage of threats while Mvere was also trying to
free himself.”
Mukupe reportedly only released his grip after Jailos
“moved forward to intervene physically” while a
crowd of workers, including the deputy minister’s
aide William Gondo, were gathered by the door at
Mvere’s office – Newsday

A policeman lost a tooth and sustained
serious head injuries after being assaulted with a
fork and a cup as he sought to arrest a rowdy
teenager for domestic violence.

Thomas Phiri (55) was stabbed twice on the
forehead and bashed once on the mouth while
arresting 19-year-old Antony Muguti for assaulting
his wife, Faina Marufu (19).

Muguti of Eiffel Flats appeared before Kadoma

Innocent Man Killed In Police Shoot Out, Family Grieves

Mr Muchesa Chatsama shot dead in his office

By Paul Nyathi|A Harare man was shot and killed by a stray bullet during the much talked about gun fire exchange between the police and a group of thugs last Friday.

Mr Muchesa Chatsama the Head – Organisational Development and Training at Head Hunters International Consulting Services is suspected to have been killed by the stray bullet while seated in his office after police exchanged gunfire with armed robbers in Malborough on Friday.

His body was discovered hours later in his office.

The man’s brother Dzago Chatsama was lost of words on his brother’s tragic death.

“Feels so helpless watching your own brother covered in blood with a bullet in his body after a police and robbers shootout,” he said in a social media post.

“How reckless of the police. After exchanging fire with armed robbers in broad daylight in a neighbouhood like Malborough. In a public area like the area around Mandel Training Centre and not even bother to go around to check if they were any casualties,” mourned Chatsama.

“All the police did was to shoot, capture their thugs, make news and look like heroes,” he lamented.

“You kill the innocent ones like cattle on slaughter and yet the robbers you only wound, God help us,” were Chatsama’s words to the police.

Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed the death indicating that investigations on the matter are still underway.

“We are investigating the case. Police followed some suspected armed robbers from town to Marlborough where there was an exchange of gunfire between the police and the suspected robbers. Four of the five suspects were nabbed while escaping. Later on, there was a report that a man was found dead in his office and police are investigating the case,” he said.

Parirenyatwa Threatens Striking Nurses

Dr David Parirenyatwa

By Paul Nyathi|Under pressure Minister of Health and Child Care Doctor David Parirenyatwa has threatened to dismiss all striking nurses if they do not report back for duty immediately.

In a statement issued through the ZBC news on Monday evening, Dr Parirenyatwa ordered all the striking nurses to return to work immediately as failure to do so warrants breach of contract.

Dr Parirenyatwa said government has since instructed Treasury to look into the financial implications of the nurses’ demands, with a view to resolving them amicably thereby rendering the industrial action by the nurses unnecessary.

“In the light of this major concession by government, which has been made against well-known economic challenges facing the nation, in the interest of patients, and in order to avert any loss of life through disruption of essential services, the reasons for calling for the industrial action no longer obtain,” said Parirenyatwa.

“It is therefore against this auspicious background that any nursing staff which does not respond and promptly report for duty as assigned will thus be deemed in breach of contract of employment, and thus deserving of appropriate disciplinary action,” threatened the Minister.

Dr Parirenyatwa said that his ministry is considering the representations by the nursing staff through the Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA).

He said subsequent meetings between the association, the government and the Health Services Board, the authorities have acknowledged the nurses’ grievances as genuine and valid.

In his statement Dr Parirenyatwa said the nurses’ grievances require urgent attention.

“The government is therefore appealing to the striking nurses to call off their actions to make way for harmonious industrial relations,” he said.

Minister Parirenyatwa said the calling off of the industrial action is even more urgent in view of the high mobility in the country related to the impending independence holiday period.

Dr Parirenyatwa said as the  minister responsible, he is also urging the striking staff to go back to work without any further delay, to allow government, through its appropriate arms, to finalise decisions on the matter.

At the time of this report, the nurses had not paid hid to the Minister’s threats with the situation at the hospitals gradually turning dire.

The nurses strike enters its second day on Tuesday after a similar strike by doctors which ended a few days ago lasted thirty two days.

Scores of patients are needlessly dying at the government hospital due to lack of resources and an unhappy personnel.

Woman In Court for Knife Stabbing

A woman from Gweru allegedly stabbed a customer with a kitchen knife three times following a dispute about isitshwala which was poorly cooked.

Charity Kamungeremu (25) from Mkoba 3 in Gweru appeared before Magistrate Phathekile Msipa facing charges of assault, She pleaded not guilty to the charges saying she was defending herself against a gang, which had teamed up against her.

“I felt threatened your worship that’s why I ran to the counter to grab a knife. He had hit me with a bottle of water after he had missed me with the bottle of beer,” Kamungeremu said.

It is the State’s case that on March 31, the complainant Ashely Pellen, his family and friends went to Sachi shop which is located at Northlea  shopping centre to celebrate his birthday.

It is alleged that the crew bought meat to braai and a plate of isitshwala.

The court heard that a quarrel arose after Pullen and company complained that the isitshwala was not cooked properly and then went on to throw the isitshwala at the shop window.

Pullen’s friend Cliff Morgan was persisting with the issue and they all ended up exchanging vulgar words with the accused.

Pullen is alleged to have thrown a bottle of beer at Kamungeremu. It however, missed the target and he then struck her with a bottle of water. She then wielded a kitchen knife and stabbed Pullen thrice.

“If anyone was in my shoes I’m sure they would have done the same thing,” she said.

It is alleged that after the scuffle, some of Pullen’s friends ran away and his wife then drove to the police where a complaint was lodged. – State media

By Terrence Mawawa| Exactly 5 months later, the man whose face brings shivers of fear and also pain on the exiled professor Jonathan Moyo’s mind; the man who announced the military takeover of government mid November last year, has told the prof Moyo, and his colleagues they can come back home.

There was drama filled with near death total trepidation on the 15th November when while Gen Sibusiso Moyo announced that the military had taken over government, Jonathan Moyo was caught the middle of open gunfire while sleeping at his colleague Saviour Kasukuwere’s house and only rescued by former First Lady Grace Mugabe’s CIOs. Foreign Affairs Minister Sibusiso Moyo told Bloomberg News those in exile were free to return home.

Moyo however said members of Mugabe’s Cabinet must account for any crimes that might have been committed.

Man In Court For Robbing Mugabe

A man from Chitungwiza appeared in court yesterday on allegations of stealing property worth $49 982 belonging to former President Robert Mugabe.

Mr Mugabe is being represented by Enoch Nyamurima (52), who was residing at Zimbabwe House where the crime was committed.

Pepukai Zvakavapano appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Josephine Sande facing charges of unlawful entry in aggravating circumstances.

He pleaded not guilty, claiming that he had been given the items by Mr Mugabe.

He was remanded to today for bail ruling.

The prosecutor Ms Francesca Mukumbiri alleged that sometime during the beginning of March, Zimbabwe House was supposed to be renovated.

Nyamurima was instructed to transfer Mr Mugabe’s household goods, computers, printers and computer accessories that were in the house to the former Pollo-Ground where five shipping containers had been placed for the purpose of securing the goods.

He carried out the instructions and securely locked all the containers.

On April 3 at around 0200hrs, Zvakavapano was on perimeter guard duty at Zimbabwe House in the company of his accomplice known as Marega, a private in the Zimbabwe National Army, who is still at large.

They allegedly connived to steal property from the containers and broke three padlocks and stole computers, laptops and computer accessories. Zvakavapano allegedly took out most of the stolen goods over the precast wall, but was disturbed by other servicemen on patrol and dumped some of the items and ran away to avoid detection.

The two allegedly sold the goods they managed to sneak away with at give-away prices.

On April 10, detectives came across some of the stolen goods, which were on display for sale in the CBD and the owner of the shop led them to Voster Chigede who had bought the laptop from Tawanda Musekiwa who led them to Zvakavapano.

Zvakavapano was arrested and a search was conducted at his house and some of the stolen goods were recovered. The detectives also recovered additional items from Takawira Gutsu who had bought them from Zvakavapano.

The total amount of the items recovered was $13 215. – state media.

Mnangagwa’s Independence Day Message

The President has said this year’s Independence Day celebrations are historic as the country has entered a period of freedom, openness and opportunity.

President Mnangagwa said this in a message posted on his Facebook page and Twitter handle on Sunday.

Zimbabwe celebrates its 38th anniversary of Independence tomorrow, with the main celebrations slated for the National Sports Stadium in Harare.

The celebrations will be held under the theme, “Zimbabwe at 38: Social Economic Restoration and International Re-engagement”.

We look forward to a week during which we will celebrate our country’s independence,” President Mnangagwa said. “This year’s celebrations carry even greater resonance, as we have entered a new period in our history; a period of freedom, openness and opportunity.”

The President called for unity among Zimbabweans.

“In this new era, we must be liberated not only from without, but also from within, from hate, prejudice and discord.

“Let us always remain united, working together with our brothers and sisters to build a strong and open Zimbabwe for all.”

The new Government, which was borne out of Operation Restore Legacy that was launched by the military in November last year, has brought renewed hope for the country’s economic development following years of recession.

The operation resulted in the resignation of former President Robert Mugabe, who had been openly captured by a criminal cabal that surrounded him, resulting in loss of direction by both the ruling zanu-pf and Government.

President Mnangagwa has enunciated various policies to open up the country to investors.

Already, the country has received foreign direct investment (FDI) commitments worth over $7 billion.

Separately, zanu-pf deputy secretary for Youth Affairs Cde Lewis Matutu has urged youths to use the independence celebrations to reflect on how they could contribute to the country’s development.

“This year’s celebrations are different from all these years,” he said. “We are celebrating two things: the first one is that we are celebrating Zimbabwe’s independence, just taking it from 1980; and the other thing is that we are celebrating freedom from Mugabe.

“These two things are very important, so we are saying as young people who are going to experience these two freedoms we should rejoice, but let us think of what we can do to support our own country, what can we do as young people to support our economy and what can we do to support the efforts of our visionary leader, Cde Mnangagwa.”

Preparations for the main event at the National Sports Stadium were at an advanced stage yesterday.

Minister of State for Harare Provincial Affairs Miriam Chikukwa said transport to ferry people to the event will be available as usual.

“We have managed to secure transport for people coming to the National Sports Stadium,” she said. “There will be 30 buses for Harare province, five buses for Bulawayo and one for each of the remaining eight provinces.

“There would be entertainment galore, including mass displays and a soccer match, so we urge people to come in their thousands for the event.” state media.

Delegates From China Jets In Zimbabwe

Following President Mnangagwa’s state visit to China last month, a delegation of 11 members has been sent to Zimbabwe.

The delegation is exploring investment opportunities in various sectors in response to President Mnangagwa’s invitation and call that Zimbabwe is now open for business.

The Head of State and Government was in China two weeks ago where he sealed multiple business deals that will result in new projects, including giving traction to those that stalled under the previous political administration.

The latest Chinese delegation to arrive in the country on a week-long exploratory mission is led by China Trade Promotion Centre director Mr Tan Wenbao.

The organisation falls under China’s Ministry of Commerce.

The delegation includes managers from various companies interested in energy, agriculture, health and infrastructure development.

The group yesterday met Zimbabwe Investment Authority (ZIA) chief executive officer Mr Richard Mbaiwa before meeting Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (Zera) officials.

Mr Mbaiwa said the visit by the Chinese delegation was triggered by President Mnangagwa’s recent State visit to the Asian economic giant.

“Their arrival is in response to the invitation that has been made by President Mnangagwa through his message that Zimbabwe is open for business,” he said.

“We met some of the officials who came from China a few days ago and they indicated that they wanted to come and they have done so. When the President spoke and we interacted with them, we then cemented everything and from our discussions more delegations are headed for Zimbabwe.

“They are following up to look at potential areas of where they can invest. They have specific interest in the energy sector and they are going to Zera to be apprised of the regulatory framework in the energy sector. They have told us they have interest in hydro and solar power generation.

“In terms of infrastructure development, they are also meeting Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe (IDBZ), which has a database of project seeking funding investments. In agriculture, they have interests and meetings have also been lined up.”

The Chinese delegation is meeting IDBZ officials today, while engagements with various ministries are expected on Thursday.

“They have just came on an exploratory mission, and this is the first step which we expect to produce results,” said Mr Mbaiwa. “We expect the meetings with the regulators and players to guide them in their determination.

“They also want to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with us, which outlines how we can cooperate in areas of trade and investment. They are sending it and we will look at it.”

During President Mnangagwa’s State visit, China and Zimbabwe agreed to elevate relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Status, the highest level of bilateral cooperation.

Among the deals sealed during the visit was the US$1 billion Hwange Thermal Power Station project, which had been floundering for three years.

Funds to start work on units 7 and 8 of the plant will be released immediately.

The Kunzvi Dam Project reached financial closure, with Sinohydro and China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) committing to providing resources for the dam and water treatment plant, and to roll-out installation of smart prepaid water meters.

Other projects that will get immediate funding totalling about US$1 billion include Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport expansion, the new Parliament Building in Mt Hampden, NetOne’s expansion, refurbishment of Morton Jeffrey Water Treatment Plant and construction of a pharmaceutical factory.

Zimbabwe and China also signed a US$1 billion tourism Memorandum of Understanding. – state media.

What Happened To Chihuri ?

Former Zimbabwe Republic Police commissioner general Augustine Chihuri’s whereabouts are not known since he failed twice to appear before the parliamentary portfolio committee on Mines and Energy.

When he appeared before the committee on Mines and Energy, his successor Godwin Matanga said they could not locate him.

Chihuri has since failed to appear before the committee which is looking into the illegal deployment of police officers and their ruthless conduct in the Chiadzwa diamond fields.

Also, a female police officer Sithulisiwe Mthimkhulu who has taken Chihuri to court claiming maintenance and demanding a one-off payment of US$272 242, for the upkeep of an 8-year-old child she claims was sired by the former top cop had the messenger of court at one time also reportedly failing to locate him.

Mthimkhulu had threatened to publish a notice in a newspaper to alert Chihuri of the impending summons, only for the former commissioner general to send his lawyer to court to answer to the claim but still his whereabouts are not known.

Chihuri was also in the news recently over theft claims made to the police by a local businessman, Bigboy Pachirera who alleges that the former top cop impounded five of his posh cars and properties while also causing his unlawful arrest and torture.

At the time he was at the helm, the ZRP was perceived to be the most corrupt institution in the country.

There had been public outcry over the manner in which the police officers, especially those in the traffic department were conducting their jobs with corruption allegations ranging from bribe taking, extortion and negligence in enforcing the law.

Addressing senior officers during the last days of his career Chihuri admittedly said at the time that 291 police officers were discharged from the police service in 2016 and 437 in 2017 for various offences.

Then 156 officers had their cases pending trial for acts of misconduct.
ZRP Commissioner-General Matanga has admitted that there is rampant corruption in the organisation and pledged to address the situation.

This also comes as government is said to be probing the financial irregularities at the ZRP after it emerged that some senior officers had directed unsanctioned salary deductions raising over $5 million per month.

Since December last year, after 23 years in the force Chihuri was sent on leave pending his retirement, this after Emmerson Mnangagwa had been inaugurated as the president at a celebration function at which the former police boss was booed by members of the public after pledging his loyalty to the new president.

Chihuru was dismissed on the day the military announced the end of Operation Restore Order and succeeded by Matanga.

Crisis Coalition spokesperson Tabani Moyo said if the former police commissioner general is missing, the government is responsible.
“Whether he is genuinely missing or not the government has a responsibility and accountability on every Zimbabwean.

“We can’t continue with the situation where people disappear and no one is answerable.
“There are two things here: either he is missing like many other people who went missing due to political reason where some like Itai Dzamara to this end are still to be accounted for or he is on the run!

“In both cases the State is accountable through its various arms such as the security services or the Immigration and Home Affairs departments,” said Moyo.
Zimbabwe Human Rights Association national director Okay Machisa said if it is true, then Zimbabweans have to gang up and demand answers from government.

“There is no way Chihuri could have gone out of the country without the assistance of others in high office because he has been in the system for long.
“And I am pretty sure that he is not in the country. As Zimbabweans we cannot have a situation where an individual could benefit from a natural resource that is supposed to benefit everyone and just vanish,” said Machisa.

He added that action has to be taken if Chihuri is not found. “We know he has properties in the country and if it is proved that he benefitted in any corrupt way in Chiadzwa then his properties have to be confiscated by government.

“And I reiterate that if government fails to act on this one, then the people of Zimbabwe have to rise and stop this kind of rot and cover-up.”
Social commentator Rashweat Mukundu is of the opinion that it’s a case of those with power and influence being above the justice system.

“If the former police chief is indeed missing then his family should have raised alarm.”
Legislator Jessie Majome said: “If it is true that the police cannot locate their ex-commissioner then surely they must be awarded a prize for being the most incompetent police service in the world!
“It matches well their other dubious distinction of being recently adjudged one of the worst police services in Africa.”

Political analyst Vivid Gwede said people do not just vanish into thin air; so he must be somewhere and if he is somewhere then somebody must know.
“This latest fiasco is part of the growing trend of unaccountability of Zimbabwean high-ranking officials with regards to the current investigations by the parliamentary committee on Mines and Energy.

“Whether it’s the refusal by Obert Mpofu to speak or the present hide-and-seek by Chihuri, it all goes on to show noncooperation with the committee which raises even more questions than had been there already,” said Gwede.

Former MDC spokesperson and lawyer Obert Gutu said it is very hard to believe that Chihuri can’t be located by the police; if at all he is still in Zimbabwe.

“Chihuri was a police boss for many, many years and naturally, he would have quite a number of sympathisers within the police force.

Chihuri is very intelligent. He is anything but stupid. He is obviously deliberately avoiding to be served with court processes as well as the parliamentary subpoena.
“If push comes to shove, Chihuri can be served …by way of substituted service. He shouldn’t be allowed to duck and dive.

“He must present himself before both Parliament and the courts of law. After all, as a former policeman, that is the decent thing that he is expected to do.
“Chihuri shouldn’t behave like a fugitive from justice,” said Gutu.

Political analyst Maxwell Saungweme could only say: “Anything is possible. The guy could have gone where (Saviour) Kasukuwere, (Jonathan) Moyo and others have gone or it could just be a case of covering up for each other.” – state media.

Chamisa: Mnangagwa Can’t Be A Hero Of 2 Struggles

By Farai D Hove| MDC leader Nelson Chamisa has said President Emmerson Mnangagwa cannot be a hero of two struggles.

Speaking in a wide ranging interview to the ANN7’s Audrey Chimwada last night, Chamisa was asked if he feels he is in in a better position to bridge the gap between the old and the new generation.

Chimwada asked him saying, “the number of issues that we want to talk to you before we invite your Alliance partners to be a part of this conversation they are equally as important tide nationalism we have read about how you have blasted for lack of a better word at the current Emmerson Mnangagwa, with regards to his age that he is not able to be in touch with new generation, what is called the millennials. You feel that you are in a better position to bridge that gap, as we know that the youth are the future of the country?

To this Chamisa said, “well I must thank you that you have given us the opportunity to come here and articulate what we stand for; we are not just an opposition to the current government, will represent an alternative proposition of the current policies that we believe, are going to take Zimbabwe to the next level, and our platform has been anchored on three pillars – that is transformation providing opportunity for Zimbabweans and prosperity.

“That is the basis upon which we are campaigning. We are not just opposing for the sake of just opposing, but we are coming in with a raft of new policies new programmes new ideas, new Solutions to our country.

“We are saying yes president Mnangagwa has done a lot he did a lot for the liberation of the country and We Salute him for that. But he can’t Be A Hero of two struggles; the Struggle for liberation and the Struggle for transformation.

“The Struggle for transformation if I struggle as a young people, and as the game changers in this very important election, we feel that the task to transform our country belongs to all of us.”

Jonathan Moyo Loses Presidential Amnesty

By Farai D Hove| The exiled Professor Jonathan Moyo has lost Presidential amnesty given to many G40 supporters, it has emerged.

Jonathan Moyo

Statements made by the Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Sibusiso Moyo Monday night showed that there will not be any special pardon for Prof Moyo.

The development falls hard as a contradiction to what President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced in December last year when he said he has forgiven every Zimbabwean.

“Whatever wrong we might have done to you, we need to forgive… I have forgiven the cabal and they are in the country except for only three who remain outside and still saying funny things but all that will soon come to an end,” said Mnangagwa.

Jonathan Moyo, the former Higher and Tertiary Education minister is said to have be the G(Gushungo Generation)40 faction’s chief strategist, together with Saviour Kasukuwere and Patrick Zhuwao, the latter who is said to have been the one pushing Grace Mugabe to believe that she can become President of the country in Mnangagwa’s place.

Yesterday, Mnangagwa’s cabinet Minister in charge of Foreign Affairs, Dr Sibusiso Moyo told Bloomberg News those in exile were free to return home, however saying members of Mugabe’s Cabinet must account for any crimes that might have been committed.

Dr Moyo said, ” We have not chased anyone out of Zimbabwe. If you have got anything to account for, then you have got to come back to account to the people of Zimbabwe,” he said.

Drama As Gumbo Is Grilled On Why He Dished Zim Airways Office Contract To Own Brother’s Daughter

What’s wrong with that?

There was drama when Transport Minister Joram Gumbo was Monday grilled on why he dished the office contract for the new Zimbabwe Airways company to his own brother’s daughter.

Gumbo who already has the flames of controversy flickering on him after recently blowing millions of dollars on snow graders for Zimbabwe, was quizzed on the local radio ZIFM and he said Zimbabwe Airways had been operating from Air Zimbabwe offices and the plan was that they use another premises so as not to cause confusion.

Joram Gumbo

He said, “…In order to separate this deal at that time – when we had not come to this situation where we are at today, they had to move out.

“So they looked for accommodation all over and they were impressed and liked to have the accommodation at Mavis Gumbo’s house.”

Minister Gumbo said this was, “a purely business deal that was done through estate agents and why Zimbabwe Airways took up the premises as I understand, is because it is spacious, it has got offices and they are using it as accommodation for their staff. So it’s accommodation and offices.”

As he continued Gumbo then said, “I don’t think anybody who is a Gumbo or related to a Gumbo or related to somebody in any position will be barred to do any business because there is a relationship. It’s not by me, it doesn’t benefit me, it’s her house, it’s being rented out, it’s taken from estate agents. What’s wrong with that?”

When grilled on what procedure was used to decide that Mavis Gumbo’s house must be be used as Zimbabwe Airways offices, he replied saying, “Government is people and institutions or corporates are run by people and offices are for corporates.

“Those running Zim Airways were looking for offices. I don’t know where they could get offices other than houses and that’s what they did.”

LIVE – Nurses Strike | Hurungwe Update

LIVEBLAST refresh to watch

By Own CorrespondentHurungwe – Nurses around Hurungwe joined the strike that saw Karoi referral district shut down on Monday.

The district hospital covers 32 clinics under Hurungwe district and had no nurses on Monday as they press Government to increase their salaries.

Some patients were discharged in all wards and there was no one at the outpatients department.

Sources said the hospital was forced to shut down when nurses did not report for duty on Monday.

There were a few who did go. But those “few who came here never attended to patients and they went home after mid-morning,’ said one of our sources who declined to be named.

Patients’ relatives blamed Government for what they said was a selective approach in solving the salary crisis among other civil servants.

‘Government should have an across-the-board payment plan for all civil servants or on a sliding scale within a quarter,’ said Petros Mudenga.

Some relatives said due to the economic crisis, they can-not afford alternative medical assistance from private doctors.

“Some patients went away after they found out that no nurse was coming to attend to them” said one official at the hospital.

Matrons were attending to patients although they were being overwhelmed.

“Generally, matrons are supervisors and cannot do anything without nurses. We had District Medical Officer Doctor Mutisi attending expecting mothers at the maternity wing for a few minutes but she is no longer there,” added one of our sources.

Karoi District Hospital cares for critically injured travellers from accident-prone Harare-Chirundu highway.

There was no official comment from provincial Medical Director Doctor Wenclius Nyamayaro at the time of writing.

Zimbabwe Nurses Association, Zina accused Government for paying them low salaries.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration was greeted by a month long strike affecting the health delivery system without vital medicine and other facilities at a time when the Government was splashing millions of dollars on expensive cars for traditional chiefs, district administrators, as well as Zanu PF party regalia ahead of the upcoming July 2018 elections.

Robberies: Public Urged To Be Watchful

Safeguard Security has urged people to give greater thought to their security and to lock up early in the light of burglaries and robberies. In a bulletin to customers, Safeguard cited an incident last month at a house in Hoggerty Hill, in Harare, in which an intruder, who was spotted looking through an open window, stabbed a domestic worker.

The intruder was found hiding in the bushes near the house and handed over to the police, after Safeguard responded to a cellphone panic button signal.

A cellphone panic button is a facility offered free of charge to Safeguard rapid response customers. It can be used anywhere, even when the person using it is away from home or work. The domestic worker was treated for his stab wounds and discharged. In another case of violence, intruders beat up a security guard at a butchery in Gweru, which they broke into.

“Breaking into commercial premises through the roof remains a popular route in. Unless the customer attends, there is no way of checking for intruders,” Safeguard said.

While Safeguard’s rapid response teams thoroughly check the premises from outside for signs of a break-in, if intruders have entered through the roof this is generally not apparent from outside.

The bulletin urged customers that have security cameras at their premises to link them up to Safeguard’s response centre, so that the response centre can see what is happening inside when an alarm goes off.

“This allows us to look in and verify the reasons for the alarm. There is no additional monthly cost for this and it is very effective in preventing serious loss,” the bulletin said.

In almost every case detailed in the bulletin where an alarm went off, the intruders fled empty handed. In some cases, however, items were stolen from areas not covered by an alarm, such as a cottage or garage.

A Safeguard spokesperson said it was mainly those with little or no awareness of security that were being targeted by robbers. Basic security should not be expensive, he said.

Zanu PF Is Funding Khupe, Claims Political Analyst

Thokozani Khupe

By Terrence Mawawa| Hard hitting political and social media analyst Antony Taruvinga has accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa of funding Thokozani Khupe to brew chaos in the MDC.

Taruvinga has indicated that Mnangagwa is using old political tactics borrowed from his mentor Robert Mugabe.

“The leaders of these minute outfits are not running mad but are doing exactly what they were paid by Zanu PF to do, that is, fragmenting the opposition support base.

These minute outfits will be the first to rubber stamp and congratulate a rigged outcome.

Khupe’ s shenanigans will drag on until election day to potray the MDC-T as a disorganized party with two presidential candidates,” argued Taruvinga.

“The tale of two different lifestyles in our great but
poorly run nation.

It’s survival of the powerful and

The people
of Zimbabwe are footing the bill- sadly,” wrote Taruvinga.

Her earlier tweet had appeared to mock people who work 8 hours per day throughout the week and have weekends off.

Thousands of Zimbabweans said that they feel she is speaking like an insensitive capitalist. She said, “Wondering how a nation with GDP per capita of $1 000 for over 37 yrs life expectancy 34yrs upto 31% children stunted, can insist on the right to work 8hrs plus 1 hr lunch 5 days a week, rest for 2 days watch football for 42 wks straight. Where is the sense of urgency desperation?”

Mangudya On UK TV: Zim Investment Niches Not For China Alone

RBZ Govenor John Mangudya has spoken calling for western investments.

He said investment opportunities in Zimbabwe are not exclusive to China.

Speaking to the US television network, Bloomberg, he said “We expect the whole global economy to invest; Not only China. Yes China has been involved in a number of projects that are there. We are also talking about Western countries, UK, Germany, France, they have a number of companies there. We know about the Totals of this world.”

He was speaking on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit that is being held in London this week.

UK Has Given Zimbabwe £45 Million

By Terrence Mawawa| The United Kingdom has reportedly given Zimbabwe a total £45million since 2014.

This was announced by the UK’s donor and development division DFID’s head Annabel Gerry last Friday.

She was speaking at the launch of Zimbabwe’s agriculture policy at the Harare International Conference Centre.

“DFID has provided £45 million since 2014,” she said [see video].

At the afternoon function covered by ZimEye.com, she added while speaking about policy issues. “I would just like to mention three policy issues that we see as critical, to enable jobs and growth and to build the agricultural sector: the first one is very obvious – building confidence and attracting private sector investments.

“We would want to see an agricultural policy that would safeguard property, and a review of the Land policy, and implementation to revise the indigenization policy will be able to provide the (property) safeguards.

“These are difficult issues but ultimately the progress of the country seems not to be made unless Zimbabweans can talk to themselves and it is for Zimbabweans to resolve how to manage those issues,” she said.

She continued saying the Zim government must also look into a “policy that supports the increased role of the private sector…” VIDEO LOADING – refresh to watch:

Mnangagwa Finally Eliminates Rival From His Office

Christian Katsande

By Paul Nyathi|In a perhaps very smart “substitution by elimination” move, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has finally succeeded in removing his long untrusted Deputy Chief Secretary from the Office Of the President and Cabinet.

Mnangagwa last week appointed Deputy Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet Retired Colonel Christian Katsande Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, removing him from his office.

Mnangagwa has battled to get Katsande out of the President’s office since 2004 when former Vice President Joice Mujuru was dismissed from her position.

Mnangagwa and his then allies failed to get Katsande out of the office as then President Robert Mugabe thwarted their moves opting to stick to the retired soldier.

At that time Mnangagwa claimed Mujuru and her close circuit security sympathisers had attempted to kill then President Robert Mugabe. Mnangagwa is on video making these claims. The Mnangagwa allies however failed to convince Mugabe that Katsande was a Mujuru loyalist.

The appointment was announced by Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Misheck Sibanda in an Extraordinary Government Gazette published on April 10, general notice 184A of 2018.

“It is hereby notified that His Excellency the President has, in terms of section 110(2)(i) and 204 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No.20) Act, 2013, appointed Rtd Colonel Christian M. Katsande as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,” said Dr Sibanda.

Rtd Col Katsande has been serving as deputy chief secretary in the Office of the President responsible for policy formulation, analysis and co-ordination.

Thokozani Khupe

By Foster Mhofu| We must remind some that on 29 January 2000, the MDC had an Inaugural Congress held in Chitungwiza. The first leadership of the party was elected. The new Executive was drawn from various sectors of the society that included labour, civic, organisations academia, farmers, religious and traditional groups.

The top Leadership was Elected as follows

1)President Morgan Tsvangirai

Harare Receives $4 Million From EU For Water Treatment

By Farai D Hove| The capital city, Harare has signed a 3.5 million Euro grant deal with a company called Vitens to improve the city’s water delivery. (THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY).

The city made the announcement Monday morning which was meant to bring celebrations.

But Zimbabweans reacted questioning if the money will be used honestly.

“You received a LOAN from China Import Export Bank to refurbish and expand Crowborough, sewage treatment plant but nothing was done why?,” asked one resident.

ZANU PF Supporters Form Strangest Association

By Paul Nyathi|As desperation increases in the ruling ZANU PF party ahead of its primary and national elections, party supporters have established probably the strangest association to help drum up support for themselves.

The faction ridden party last week saw the establishment of the National Zanu PF Aggrieved Voters’ Association set up to challenge the party’s candidate identification process.

The Association came up amidst huge speculations in the party that party provincial structures responsible for elections were disqualifying some candidates loyal to President Emmerson Mnangagwa in favour of the rival G40 faction aligned members.

In its first official intervention on the electoral process the association appealed for President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s intervention to stop the known G40 members from manipulating the candidates’ selection process ahead of the party’s internal polls set for May 5 this year.

Addressing journalists in Harare over the weekend, the chairperson of the Association Austin Chindega warned that the party risked being hijacked by G40 members, whom he claimed were now dictating terms and declaring their seats as uncontested.

Chindega singled out Mashonaland West member and Zifa president Philip Chiyangwa, Kadoma’s Jimayi Muduvuri and Manicaland’s Esau Mupfumi, saying they were G40 kingpins who openly campaigned against Mnangagwa’s succession bid and even composed praise songs for former First Lady Grace Mugabe.

“Some provincial leaders are being bought with silver and gold at the expense of voters. We are born Zanu PF and we will vote for President Mnangagwa, but we want him to correct what some provincial leaders are doing. How can you confirm Chiyangwa as unopposed? We have videos of him with Mupfumi singing Grace’s praise, but they are now in front, they are now representing the party as unopposed,” Chindega queried.

He claimed that the G40 activists had manipulated provincial leaderships in a bid to destabilise the party ahead of this year’s general elections.

“Prodigal sons are allowed back in the party, but they must take the back seat. Muduvuri has vast tracts of land in Kadoma, which he even invited Grace Mugabe to officiate. He had several land deals he did with former Local Government minister Saviour Kasukuwere. He also has other land deals in Norton, but the same people are taken back to lead us. So, as Zanu PF voters, we are saying no to imposition of unwanted candidates.”

Chindega said his executive would soon engage the presidium on the matter.

LATEST – Chaos Hits Hospitals As Nurses Begin Strike

By Dorrothy Moyo| There was chaos in hospitals across the country Monday morning when nurses launched their strike.

In their memo dated 14 April, which ZimEye.com reveals, the Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZNA) said its members will only return to work when their grievances have been resolved.

“Nurses play a pivotal role in health delivery in Zimbabwe. They provide services to the community 24/7 with minimum resources and below market packages…”

“Regardless of this, government has seen it fit to ignore these combatants by not attending to issues which enhance their functionality and motivation (such as) insufficient medical, surgical, human resources and equipment at health facilities.

“Discrepancies in allocation of allowances should be rationalized immediately, non-implementation of outstanding issues like regrading, promotion procedures, since 2010 for nurses.”

ZimEye was at the time of writing touring various hospitals in the nation’s main two capitals and a report will follow during the course of the day.

UK Academic: President Mnangagwa Benefits From Grace Mugabe’s Police Case For Poaching

A UK academic has written saying President Emmerson Mangagwa benefits from the recently launched police investigation on Grace Mugabe for alleged poaching crimes.

The headline on the Zimbabwe Herald could not have made it clearer: “Police tighten noose on Grace Mugabe,” Keith Somerville, begins his article.

Last month the Zimbabwe’s National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority handed the police relevant documents it said link Grace Mugabe to poaching of protected animals.

Parks spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo, told VOA Studio 7 that the police would use the documents to investigate allegations that Mrs. Mugabe intended to ship wildlife material to the Middle East, America and China.

“We have provided the police with information with some of the documents which the office of the president then was requesting for the shipment of alleged gifts to countries like China and the United Arab Emirates and also the United States of America … I think the matter is under investigation,” he said.

The analysis piece explores the possible reasons as the author says, why Grace Mugabe is currently under police investigation.

He then says, the Herald, for 37 years the mouthpiece of Robert Mugabe’s government, is now the voice of the new president, Emmerson Mnangagwa. He replaced Mugabe when the long-time leader was deposed in late 2017. Over the last couple of months the Herald and a number of other Zimbabwean media outlets have published detailed accounts on police investigations into former first lady Grace Mugabe’s suspected role in ivory smuggling.

The first of these stories, less than two months after Mnangagwa took office, said the former first lady was being investigated for “illicit and illegal activities”. Information said to have come from the very top of Mnangagwa’s government implicated the former first lady in an organised crime ring “responsible for the poisoning of hundreds of jumbos in the country”. She was also accused of illicitly obtaining ivory from legal government stocks and either illegally selling it or exporting it as gifts for high profile foreign allies.

Zimbabwe is one of the key elephant range states and home to Africa’s second largest estimated elephant population of nearly 83,000 individuals, following Botswana. Though there are high elephant numbers, alarms have been raised over poaching in the country including the use of cyanide poison to kill large numbers of them. The first reported case of this was in 2013 when a single massacre of over 100 elephants happened at Hwange National Park. Since then it has become a common means of poaching throughout the country’s protected areas.

As more and more evidence has been leaked to the press, the government’s intention to prosecute her for ivory and rhino horn smuggling has become clear. If she has been involved in illegal wildlife trading and has links to poaching, then she should be prosecuted and, if found guilty, punished. But this is also all incredibly useful for the new president who stands to benefit politically from these investigations.

Politically useful

Mnangagwa needs to embed himself in power as presidential and parliamentary elections are due to be held later this year. For this, he needs to ensure the unity of ZANU-PF – Zimbabwe’s ruling party since independence – and root out any pockets of pro-Grace supporters.

Grace Mugabe was his major rival to succeed President Mugabe and acted with her husband’s support to sack Mnangagwa as Vice-President in 2017. This led to a military backed coup which forced the Mugabes to step down and saw Mnangagwa elected leader by ZANU-PF.

Though Grace Mugabe lacks the party’s majority support, she does have backing from a group of younger ministers and party officials known as Generation 40. If she is found guilty of these crimes, she could end up in prison and so politically neutralised. Also, by pursuing her on ivory and rhino horn smuggling charges, Mnangagwa averts accusations of political vindictiveness.

The move to pursue Grace Mugabe also wins the new leader international favour. Far from being criticised for oppressing political opponents, Mnangagwa would be praised for making a stand in the protection of elephants and rhinos – which, today, has huge global concern. Between 2007 and 2014, the African elephant population declined by 144,000 animals.

The government may also be attempting to put a lid on past accusations against Mnangagwa, who was said to be the godfather of rhino horn smuggling operations. Partly through his role as Mugabe’s director of intelligence, he was accused of being involved with supplying horns to Chinese buyers nearly a decade ago. But before any judicial hearings or convictions, the police docket, in the hands of then Attorney General Johannes Tomana, disappeared.

Conservation drive

Within a month of coming into power, the stress on conservation became part of the new government’s narrative, creating a discourse which places Mnangagwa as a conservation stalwart and Grace Mugabe as a corrupt ivory smuggler.

Media trumpeted news that Mnangagwa’s youngest daughter, Tariro, had joined a group of young female rangers dedicated to fighting poaching in the Zambezi valley.

Mnangagwa was also quick to announce the stop of live elephant exports – a trade that had been directly pinned to Grace Mugabe.

Now, there are clear signals that the government is amassing evidence to make a stand against poaching and prosecute Grace Mugabe. Mnangagwa’s special advisor, Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa…. READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE

By Farai D Hove| A Harare man was killed by a stray bullet in Marborough, Harare on Friday.

Mr Muchesa Chatsama was shot during the open exchange with the police.

His brother wrote of the ordeal saying, “feels so helpless watching your own brother covered in blood with a bullet in after a police vs robbers shootout. Munhu akazvigarira muoffice make nhai wongobatanidzirwa.

“How reckless of the police. After exchanging fire with armed robbers in broad daylight in a neighbourhood like Malborough.

Woman In Solo “Walk To Freedom” From ZANU PF

Charity Ndebele

By Paul Nyathi|South African anti-apartheid fighter Nelson Mandela declared that there is never an easy walk to freedom.

A 34 year old Zimbabwean woman has taken the words to action and undertook a gruelling solo 40km walk for freedom against ZANU PF’s 38 year hold on power in Zimbabwe.

Charity Ndebele a member of the vibrant United Kingdom based human rights group Zimbabwe Human Rights Organisation (ZHRO) has embarked on a lone 40 mile walk to express her concern against the ruling party back home.

The walk will start from Aversely to Odiham finishing at Ellisfield on the first day – and Ellisfield to Winchester Castle on the second day.

According to a post on the organisation’s official website and Facebook page, Ndebele started the gruesome walk on Saturday and was due to finish it on Sunday evening.

“Charity embarked on her 40 mile journey yesterday (Saturday) morning and hopes to reach Winchester castle at the end of the day today (Sunday.)

“I hope to be walking 20 miles a day to raise awareness of the situation at home where the military in charge is expected to run a free and fair election which we know won’t happen – this is not only a farce but a slap in the faces of Zimbabweans who wish for a truly independent Zimbabwe,” said Ndebele before embarking on the walk.

The human rights group will also hold a 105km walk in August on the same plight. On Wednesday the group will also hold an anti independence day protest at the Zimbabwean Embassy in London.

“Everyone is welcome to join our Protest against Independence Day celebrations at the Zimbabwe Embassy on Wednesday – 18 April 2018,” said the rights group in a statement.

Mnangagwa Told By Britain: We Want To See An Agric Policy That Protects Property Rights

By Terrence Mawawa| The British Government’s donor wing, the Department For International Development has insisted on three policy changes it proposes are key to reviving the economy.

Speaking at the launch of Zimbabwe’s Agriculture policy at the Harare International Conference Centre, DFID’s Head of DFID Zimbabwe and South Africa, Annabel Gerry emphasised three areas which are Building confidence for private sector investment, Strategic use of agriculture subsidies, and thirdly, Creating a predictable policy environment.

At the afternoon function covered by ZimEye.com, she said, “I would just like to mention three policy issues that we see as critical, to enable jobs and growth and to build the agricultural sector: the first one is very obvious – building confidence and attracting private sector investments.

She continued saying the government must also look into a “policy that supports the increased role of the private sector…” VIDEO LOADING – refresh to watch:

Priscilla Dares Welshman on Khupe

Breaking up, Priscilla Misihairabwi Mushonga and Welshman Ncube

By Paul Nyathi|MDC Member of Parliament Priscilla Misihairabwi Mushonga has dared party leader professor Welshman Ncube over allegations that the party wants to purge her over her involvement with ousted MDC-T Deputy President Thokozani Khuphe.

Party sources within the MDC told ZimEye.com that the party leadership is not happy with Mushonga’s support for Khuphe who is against the MDC Alliance coalition which the MDC is a partner into.

The reaction by the party comes after Mushonga was part of a team that spearheaded a women’s gathering in Bulawayo to give solidarity to Khuphe after she was dismissed from the MDC-T.

The MDC-T is the major partner in the MDC Alliance coalition.

Speaking in a media interview last week, Mushonga said that she feels she did not do anything wrong by associating herself with Khuphe as she was giving moral support to a fellow woman.

“I am chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Gender and Youth Affairs and, therefore, cannot be persecuted for attending a solidarity tea for a woman who is basically under siege from male chauvinists. I am a women’s activist and that defines who Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga is, nobody will take that away from me and not even a party can do that,” she said.

“It would be a dereliction of duty on my part if I were to keep quiet while Khupe is bashed and violated in the name of politics.

“The MDC was formed on a set of values, which include gender equality, so for anyone to think I will keep quiet just to retain my position as a parliamentarian is the height of madness.”

Ncube, however, said while there was apparent anger within his party over Misihairabwi-Mushonga’s actions, it would be a futile exercise to recall her now.

“The life of this Parliament is basically coming to an end and an election is likely to be proclaimed in the next six weeks or so. This Parliament is left with at most four months, so it would be an exercise in futility to recall her,” he said.

“However, I am aware that there are people in the party who are upset with Misihairabwi-Mushonga’s involvement in the affairs of other parties, but, thus far, nobody has suggested that we exercise the right of recall.”

Misihairabwi-Mushonga said she was undeterred by the threats.

“I say bring it on, they can recall me or fire me if they so wish. If anything, they have been trying to do so since 2013. It’s nothing new,” the Matabeleland South proportional representation MP said.

“But if they think I will roll over and allow them free passage, then they have another thing coming. I am ready to fight them hard. If they want a political fight, they will get it, or better still, if they want a constitutional fight, they will find me in a corner and ready for the fight. The fact is I have not declared a political position, so if they want to fire me, they should find another reason. This will not fly.”

Zimbabweans Don’t Eat Presidential Promises

By Moses ChambokoMoses Chamboko| The season for euphoria and empty promises seems to be upon us. It is that time when politicians say anything that pleases the crowds once they get access to the microphone. It resembles the “unopenga” era of Dr Stop It when she would say anything, including obscenities in front of school children. It is like when ZANU PF promised 2.2 million jobs in 2013 and, instead, thousands of people found themselves on the streets without a job.

Not to be outdone in 2018, some of our friends are now promising intercity bullet trains and rural air services to airlift harvest from fields in rural communities to markets. While there is nothing wrong with having a dream or a vision, what do these promises say about our priorities? If you tell a starving family in Chibwedziva, Binga, Tsholotsho or Bocha that the new government will launch a rocket to the moon within six months of coming into office, do you expect them to make any sense out of it, get excited and vote for you on the basis of that promise?

Zimbabweans cannot stomach empty promises. They need to hear sound policies. In the past, people voted for Robert Mugabe’s ZANU PF or Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC without necessarily taking a very close look at what these leaders and their parties had to offer. Their voting choices were informed by blind loyalty and emotion, plus coercion in some cases. With Mugabe’s inglorious departure from office and Tsvangirai’s sad death, our politics has changed, so must our mindsets and our election promises.

If the next elections are indeed going to be free, fair, credible and transparent as we have been told, there is a very good chance that there will not be an outright winner, at least in the first round. While electoral irregularities have been raised in the past, the fact of the matter is that ZANU PF has a solid membership base of people who will vote for them no matter what happens. This number is estimated to be not less than one million and it is a reality that cannot be ignored.

On the other side of politics, MDC has demonstrated that it has a very decent following judging by public displays since February 14 when Tsvangirai passed on. However, there is a difference between members and supporters. It would make sense for the MDC Alliance to also carry out a thorough audit of its membership ahead of the poll just as ZANU PF is doing. They need to know how many of their members are registered to vote nationwide.

In the last four months, we have seen Zimbabweans shifting their political allegiance as if they were changing socks. For some, it takes only a 2 kg bag of Chinese rice for them to change sides while, for others, a good song at a well-attended rally is all it takes. This is a clear demonstration of the volatility of the electorate. Then there are those who do not religiously belong to either side but will be influenced by positive messages and sound policy. This is the segment that may well decide the outcome in 2018.
The coming election must be won on sound policies. So far, neither side of politics has made any serious policy statements. Instead, we have heard only nebulous rallying cries ranging from “We are open for business” to “We will build bullet trains”. These are merely political statements without any substance.

Zimbabweans want to be told exactly how the economy will be revived, where the money will come from and who will underwrite that investment, using what instruments and means?

We want to hear how our health delivery system is going to be resuscitated. How will the water woes in cities be brought to an end? How will our sewer systems be fixed? How will the potholes be repaired? How will our mining industry revert to commercial operations instead of the subsistence type of mining that has been happening for years? How will our agriculture sector start working again? How will our financial services return to normalcy so that bank queues become a thing of the past? How will manufacturing be revived?

What steps will be taken to create a new culture of service delivery in government and state institutions underpinned by honesty, integrity, accountability and respect? How will the middle class be restored? How will parents be able to send their children to decent schools to get a decent education? How will unemployment be brought down to under 25%? These are what Tsvangirai used to call the “bread and butter issues” that the ordinary Zimbabwean is most concerned about.

Given the likelihood of a very close election, the balance of power must reside in some centre movement that will keep major parties in check. This is not without precedent. In New Zealand a small party won only 7% of the vote in 2017 but went on to become the powerbroker, even determining which of the major parties could form government. The leader of the New Zealand First Party, Winston Peters became one of the most powerful figures in cabinet when he was appointed both Deputy Prime Minister and Minster of Foreign Affairs. This is how minor parties sustain democracy by clipping wings of major parties.

We want an effective and accountable government after the elections. Experience of the GNU has taught us that when major parties form a government together, they waste time fighting like childish rivals instead of delivering on election promises. The result is chaotic. Lynette Karenyi of the MDC put it aptly when she said the GNU was like two people trying to make a fire together, one putting dry wood and the other shoving wet wood into the fireplace. The result was a thick smoke not a bright flame. Another marriage of convenience will not take us anywhere. We need a proper government with a package of sound and realistic policies. – ZUNDE

Thrills In Byo As Tears Roll In Harare

Dynamos substitutes grapple with tear smoke during the half-time break while (insert) the Glamour Boys fans engage in running battles with the police following the surprise discharge of teargas at Rufaro yesterday

By Paul Nyathi|It was a tale of Two Worlds apart between Bulawayo and Harare on Sunday afternoon as the country’s Premier Football League gathers momentum.

While Bulawayo soccer fans enjoyed a thrilling ninety minutes of football at Barbourfields Stadium the same can not be said of Harare fans who were in tears as police unwarrantedly unleashed tear smoke at them at Rufaro Stadium.

There was a twenty minute pandemonium in the capital at half time in a lukewarm encounter between failing giants Dynamos and Yadah Stars after a trigger happy police officer unleashed tear gas at the volatile Vietnam Stand.

The Dynamos fans couldn’t take kindly to the police action leading to a twenty minute “mini war” that saw police officers run for safety as the fans vented their anger on them clearing the stadium of any police details.

Police claimed that the officer who was fidgeting around with tear canister unleashed it into the crowded stand by mistake.

The ill timed move caused anger amongst the Dynamos fans who were already unhappy at their team’s lukewarm performance resulting in them thoroughly dealing with the defenceless police officers kicking them out of the stadium.

Highlanders and Chicken Inn served Bulawayo soccer fans with a beauty of a match as they settled to a two all draw.

Highlanders drew first blood with a beauty from the boot of midfielder Brian Banda in the 43rd minute.

Banda controlled the ball with a tap-up before hitting a volley that went into the top right, beating diving Chicken Inn goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze.

The Gamecocks equalised within a minute into the second half, with an equally brilliant goal by Innocent Mucheneka that left Highlanders’ supporters mum.

Highlanders defenders failed to track the goalscorer as he made a run into the box and the Maritzburg-bound midfielder hit a volley on the run inside the six-yard box after being fed by veteran Clemence Matawu.

Banda came up with an assist for Highlanders’ second goal; threading a long pass to Gabriel Nyoni and the speedy striker beat an advancing Chipezeze in the 62nd minute.

What made this goal brilliant is that it took about 10 seconds for the ball to get into Chicken Inn’s net from the time it was released by Highlanders goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda.

The Bosso goalkeeper passed the ball to Adrian Silla just outside his box and he fed Banda a few metres from him.

Banda then released a long-range pass to Nyoni, who collected it in mid-air and struck the ball past an advancing Chipezeze.

However, the Bosso celebrations lasted just two minutes, as Chicken Inn equalised through former Bosso midfielder Simon Munawa, who capitalised from a defensive mix up between Charlton Siamalonga and his keeper Sibanda.

“I think for me, this is what we want from the region, this is the kind of competition you want and today football was the winner,” said Highlanders Coach Madinda Ndlovu after the match.

Striker Kudakwashe Kumwala saved the winless Harare giants Dynamos the blushes with a late second-half screamer that cancelled out Leeroy Mavhunga’s fourth-minute strike.

Yadah, who played with better conviction in the opening, with Mavhunga lively, appeared set to hold onto their slender lead, but thoughtless delaying tactics by their goalkeeper Steven Chimusoro, which also irked the Dynamos fans behind his goal, eventually led to their loss of concentration on a game in which they had the upper hand.

As missiles rained at Chimusoro’s goal area, Yadah captain Jimmy Dzingai lost his cool and got entangled in a battle against the fans when he threw the missile back at the fans earning him a red card in the process.

Sunday’s Results:
Dynamos 1 – 1 Yadah

Chicken Inn 2-2 Highlanders

Triangle 2-1 CAPS United

Shabanie Mine 1-1 Ngezi Platinum

Chamisa Promises His Own “New Dispensation” Govt In Which All Leaders Will Speak Ndebele

Below are highlights of MDC leader, Nelson Chamisa’s address to Bulawayo last week.

Chamisa extended a heartfelt thank you to the people of Bulawayo for their show of support with a huge turnout for the MDC Alliance rally on Saturday at the White City Stadium.

Chamisa said “It was a heartening sojourn into the city of Kings and Queens at the weekend as the ambience and camaraderie amply testified to a city ready to step into a new country.

The crowd was huge, the atmosphere at the White City Stadium was electric and
scintillating, arguably our biggest crowd so far.”

“The huge crowd that turned up at White City stadium on Saturday in its own unique way answered its own questions and stood testimony to the successful rebranding that the party has undergone and the growing confidence and faith that the people continue to repose in our democratic movement.

“I saw the old and the desperate, the young and the impatient, the restless and the carefree all ready to walk into a novel moment-a new Zimbabwe. Bulawayo
showed it was a city all set to step out and meet a new destiny. I saw a people ready
and prepared to shake the hand of destiny and to behold the new,” Chamisa
added.

Addressing the throng, Chamisa said in a new dispensation, the MDC wants to make sure that it is compulsory for national leaders to speak all the major languages in Zimbabwe.

“We do not want language imperialism in a new Zimbabwe. We do not want language
cleansing, where you dwarf other people’s language but you want to advance your
own. We are correcting that. It starts with your President,” he said.

“We do not want the Zanu PF culture of bastardising other communities,” he
added.

Chamisa spoke of a new governance culture in which civil servants are
not victimized for serving under an administration. He said it is the politicians
whose terms of office are altered by the people who elect them, not the civil
servants.

“Politicians are the ones who are elected, not civil servants. In a new government our
civil servants will know that their service is service to the people and not to a party.
Zanu PF does not know the difference.

Party and government are different. We need to ensure this distinction is in place.
No one should be victimized for serving in government at any given point,” he said.

He added that in the month of April, which the MDC has declared to be independence
month, it is important to redefine why that struggle was fought and how the new
generation can embrace the celebration of independence as equals knowing they too
fought for the independence of this nation.

He said independence was attained so that people could lead a better life, not the constant struggles people endure in this generation.

“We did not attain independence to see the problems we face this day. We did not
attain Independence for the suffering and fracturing we are seeing in this country. We
did not attain independence to victimize people,” Chamisa said.

He added that devolution of power was a constitutional requirement that need to
be upheld in order for the nation to start developing.

The current government has failed to implement and respect the provisions of
the constitution.

“We want areas like Matopo to be elevated to town status. It is possible. We want
devolution. Let us devolve power and authority. Devolution is our revolution.

We want to ensure Bulawayo returns to its status as an industrial hub,” he said.

Chamisa took a swipe at the government interference in the Khumalo
throne saying the government should allow communities to deal with their chieftaincy
alone according to their cultures.

“Leave the Khumalo clan do what they know best according to their culture. Leave
them alone. We must respect our culture.

Going forward, we want Matopo to be the center of annual cultural celebrations,” he
said.

Chamisa also took time to visit the Joshua Nkomo memorial museum as part of the party’s thrust to commemorate Independence month.  – Changing Times

UK Ambassador Says – Zimbabweans Must Feel Confident they Can Vote for Party Of their Choice

The British ambassador to Zimbabwe, Catriona Laing has spoken following criticism from the opposition party, MDC  -T.

Below was her full statement:

Elections aren’t far off in Zimbabwe – likely just three or four months away. The British embassy and its partners here in Zimbabwe have welcomed the commitments of the government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa to ensure those elections are free, fair and violence-free.

But commitments must be translated into real change. We and our partners continue to urge President Mnangagwa to implement the reforms necessary so that free and fair polls can be held and Zimbabweans can enjoy the future the deserve. As the UK’s ambassador to Zimbabwe Catriona Laing says, a successful election will be a “key milestone” in allowing Zimbabwe to return to normal economic and political relations with the international community.
She added: “Going forward it will be very important that there is full transparency around the voters roll and the ballot papers and that the necessary legal frameworks are updated in line with the constitution. Ultimately it is for the people of Zimbabwe to feel confident that they can vote for the party and individuals of their choice without fear or intimidation.

Need for reforms, no to political violence
Embassy officials have been meeting representatives of all the main political parties here regularly (as is the job of any embassy) and we’ve delivered exactly the same message to each party. To the government of President Mnangagwa, the UK has highlighted at the highest level the need for reforms before the polls: our Foreign Minister Boris Johnson made that position clear when he met Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa in February as (a few weeks earlier) did our Minister for Africa Harriett when she visited Harare. This has been our message right from the start: that it is only free and fair elections that will open the door to full international re-engagement. We have urged the government to allow in international observers – and we’ve been encouraged by early indications this week that this may happen. As those who follow our social media accounts will know, we’ve encouraged the new administration to make sure ALL human rights violations are tackled decisively and transparently. We have and will take up any instances of political violence with the authorities, wherever in Zimbabwe these occur and whoever is behind the violence.

BVR and support to civil society
Because voter registration and the compiling of a voters’ roll is so crucial in the holding of free and fair polls, we’ve been monitoring the biometric voter registration process from when it began back in October last year. Our teams took the lead in travelling out to rural areas to see the reality of how the registration process was progressing far from the capital Harare. The teams gave feedback to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, the minister of justice and to civil society organisations.
The UK and other donors work together to provide extensive financial and technical assistance to a wide range of civil society organisations in Zimbabwe. Our support enables and empowers these organisations to hold the state to account for its use of resources and its respect for human rights and democratic principles. Already our support for civil society is having an impact in improving access to media and information for Zimbabweans. UK support is key in promoting human rights and equality in Zimbabwe. Through it, we are improving access to justice for the marginalised – and we’re helping push for transparency and citizen engagement in the use of public resources.

Support for election litigation
As far as elections are concerned, support from the UK, and other donors, will allow domestic election bodies to carry out their critical work to provide oversight of the process and environment. Crucially, we’ve already supported a programme of litigation on local election issues – to make sure that electoral practice is in line with the constitution.
