S.A Donates Maize Meal To Zimbabwe As ED Pampers Chiefs With Cars
By A Correspondent- South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa yesterday dispatched International Relations minister Naledi Pandor to hand over tonnes of maize meal and other donations to his Zimbabwean counterpart President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Pandor, a vocal critic of Zimbabwe’s human rights abuses, handed over the consignment at State House in Harare.
“On behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa, the government and the people of the Republic of South Africa, we are here today to hand over the support to the Republic of Zimbabwe as pledged by the Republic of South Africa,” she said.
“With the good rainy season in our region after the devastating droughts of El Nino, we have tapped into our land, and it has produced enough grains to allow us to share. The cost of our pledge was R50 million and from that amount, we were able to secure 450 000 bags of 12,5kg of maize meal.
“South Africa will be responsible for the transportation costs to Harare and for further delivery and distribution to the identified 12 districts.”
Pandor described Zimbabwe as “a friend who sticks with us through raging storms”.
“Zimbabwe has been that friend that stood with us as we braved through the storms of colonialism and apartheid. As the saying goes, a friend in need is a friend indeed.
“While we are hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, we do not forget that natural disasters remain cyclic pandemics, affecting millions of people across the world, for decades. They have killed scores of people, displaced people and deprived them of livelihoods and dignity. They continue to create vulnerable communities, in which people are robbed of their human rights to access food, healthcare, adequate water, housing, educational and recreational facilities.”
Pandor said natural disasters called for government, business and civil society to come together to rebuild the affected communities.
In a related development, president Mnangagwa on Saturday handed over cars to traditional chiefs.
The brand new Isuzu double-cab trucks were handed over to traditional chiefs, after doing the same in the run-up to the 2018 elections.
Zimbabwe has 286 chiefs, and the new vehicles come as ZANU PF has roped in the traditional leaders to mobilise support ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, President Mnangagwa implored the Chiefs to put the cars to good use adding that government will fulfil its promise to upgrade the status quo of traditional leaders.
He said:
We will stand by our pledge to ensure chiefs get access to electricity, water, good roads and vehicles every five years.
This I hope will enable you to execute your duties of uniting people, instilling and preserving our cultural values.
We want chiefs to exercise their duties by following up on those in rural area and towns who are troublesome and put them to order then I will rest assured of leading the united and peaceful nation.
This comes at a time when the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) faces an acute shortage of vehicles and hospitals across the country do not have enough ambulances.
Traditional leaders are supposed to play pivotal roles in communities as the custodians of cultural values, facilitating development and resolving disputes using traditional ways of conflict resolution but they have increasingly been abused by ZANU PF to commandeer their subjects to vote for the ruling party during elections.

Cancer Patients In Quandary As Radiation Therapy Machines Break Down
By A Correspondent- Radiation therapy machines have broken down at Bulawayo’s Mpilo Central Hospital, imperilling the lives of over 100 cancer patients on a waiting list for treatment.
Mpilo is one of only two medical facilities in the country that treat cancer patients – the other is Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare, 450km away.
The hospital has two linear accelerators and a third machine for cervical cancer. One of the two linear accelerators which direct high-energy beams of radiation into a patient’s body to kill cancer cells has been out of service for months, and the other packed up on May 6, just over a month after it was repaired, patients told ZimLive.
One patient said: “Life in Zimbabwe is tough. It’s been two weeks and we’re being turned away because the machine is not working properly. My radiation sessions have been disrupted by exactly seven days.”
The patient said after enquiring if he could be transferred to Parirenyatwa, he was told he would need to start his 25-day treatment all over again “as radiation is supposed to be a continuous process.”
He added: “I fear for my life and that of a friend I met at Mpilo who is in a critical situation. The ministry of health should help us.”
Acting Mpilo Hospital CEO Professor Solwayo Ngwenya confirmed their machines had broken down.
In an emailed response to ZimLive, Prof Ngwenya said: “Please note that the machines are very sensitive and they break down constantly. This also happens to machines in Harare and we have treated patients from there when their machines break down.
“The government is working very hard to fix the latest problems. This time it is not the issue of the physicist.”
Previously when Mpilo’s cancer machines were working, the hospital had no physicist to carry out the treatment until one was seconded from Harare. Mpilo’s last two physicists had left for the United Kingdom.
Ngwenya said Zimbabwe currently had no engineers who can fix the machines.
“When they break down, we have to fly in engineers from South Africa, and that requires foreign currency which we don’t have. Whenever there are power outages and such other disturbances, the risk of breakdown increases exponentially,” Ngwenya explained.
He said they relied on the health ministry to secure foreign currency from treasury, adding that the issue had already been escalated with the ministry.
On Tuesday, shocking pictures taken by doctors emerged showing nurses carrying patients up a staircase because lifts were not working. The hospital is blaming power outages.
“The pictures you refer to were taken on Monday. ZESA was said to be doing a fault repair in the neighbouring suburbs so they cut power off most of the day. We used diesel generators to power lifesaving equipment, but unfortunately the lift is not powered by the generators,” Ngwenya said.
“We have been having these power cuts for sometime now. We used to have dedicated power supply from ZESA as a major strategic hospital. Unfortunately, we don’t have any dedicated line anymore and we continue to be at the mercy of power faults and cuts.
“We feel the pain and inconvenience that the staff and patients and their relatives have to go through. We hope that these issues will be attended soon by the relevant authorities.”

State To Respond To Chombo’s Application
By A Correspondent- The State was on Monday told to take seriously proceedings into the matter in which former Cabinet minister Ignatius Chombo is accused of corruptly parcelling out State land and duping home-seekers through his cooperative.
Harare regional magistrate Mr Stanford Mambanje said the State was supposed to respond to Chombo’s application challenging his placement on remand on the six counts of corruption-related charges.
“The accused made an application on April 15 and the State has not responded.
“The State should respond before end of day today (yesterday) and should take the proceedings seriously,” said Mr Mambanje.
Prosecuting, Mrs Netsai Mushayabasa undertook to respond to the application before Chombo returns to court on Friday.
In his application prepared by his lawyer Professor Lovemore Madhuku, Chombo said the State had failed to name the people whom he allegedly duped and the amounts they lost.
Chombo claims the State should, at least by now, have established the amount of prejudice suffered considering that the offences were allegedly committed several years ago.
“To begin with, the complainants have not been named, the amounts have not been stated and given that the alleged offence occurred over a period of 15 years, it is strange how the State does not have an amount,” he said.
Chombo said the bank account said by the State to be the one used by home-seekers depositing money when buying stands from him, was not registered in his name and was not the one who opened the account.
He said the cooperative he is alleged to have used to defraud people was not registered and this was confirmed from the Registrar of Cooperatives.
In his application, Chombo also denied that he allocated 125 commonage stands to himself saying there was no title deeds registered in his name to prove the State’s allegations.
“The State has not so much as even bothered to mention a stand number of any stand allocated to myself, by myself let alone 125.
“There is only mention that residential stands 304, 318, 319, 320 and 322 of Plot 12 Philadelphia Farm are mine. Nothing could be further from the truth,” he said.
Chombo also denied owning the companies that the State alleges were allocated stands by him on Carrick Creagh Farm saying he was not a director or shareholder of any company.
“The first company Comverol Enterprises (Pvt) Limited, I am neither a director nor shareholder. How can these companies be deemed mine when I am neither a shareholder nor director? Cayford (Pvt) Limited does not exist.
“How can I be an owner of a company that does not exist,” he said.
Chombo distanced himself from Cavford (Pvt) Limited, which the State alleges he allocated a stand .
He also denied handing over Order Farm to Sensene Investments saying there is a Constitutional Court judgment that dealt with the matter.
Any decision that was made regarding the farm in question was as a result of a court order, Chombo said.
Chombo also denied instructing officials to sign a deed of settlement with Phillip Chiyangwa’s Pinnacle Holdings saying there was a Supreme Court order which narrated how the signing was made.
The State is expected to file its response on April 28, with Prof Madhuku making his oral submissions on May 10.

Zanu Pf Youth League Leader In Soup Over Violent Gangs
By A Correspondent- Zanu-PF youth league secretary for indigenisation Mike Chimombe is under fire for allegedly fanning factionalism and sponsoring violent gangs that are reportedly decampaigning President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Chinhoyi.
Chimombe, who is also Affirmative Action Group (AAG) president, has reportedly turned into a terror campaign leader, terrorising residents in Makonde and Chinhoyi.
Information deputy minister Kindness Paradza recently wrote to the party’s national chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri asking her to intervene and rein in Chimombe.
In a letter to Zanu-PF chairperson and Defence minister Oppah Muchinguri dated May 10, 2021, Paradza, who is also Makonde MP and Zanu-PF district co-ordinating committee (DCC) chairperson, alleged that Chimombe and his rogue group had rendered some districts ungovernable.
“Chimombe is now behaving like a warlord in Makonde, in particular Chinhoyi constituency, where he has divided the party by sponsoring a gang of hooligans whose actions and behaviour are working against the party and our leader, His Excellency the President, Cde ED Mnangagwa.
“Cde chairman, if no action is taken against Mike Chimombe now, as your DCC chairman, I will be forced to abandon Chinhoyi and concentrate on Mhangura and Makonde constituencies only,” he said.
Chimombe is alleged to have unleashed hooligans who disrupted an inter-district meeting in Chinhoyi on May 8, 2021.
“This is now the second time that he (Chimombe) has done it, using the same hooligans who hide behind the party, simply because they will be wearing his hovhorosi (overalls) attire bearing a Zanu-PF logo,” Paradza said.
He further alleged that Chimombe’s “thugs” were terrorising bona fide party supporters, adding that there was no peace in Chinhoyi.
“Instead of us uniting as a party and fighting to regain the seat which has been under MDC since 2008, Mike Chimombe has seen it fit to drive away the support we currently have in Chinhoyi,” Paradza said.
He said the May 8 meeting was so violent that he had to be evacuated from the venue by security agents.
Police had to throw teargas canisters to disperse Chimombe’s marauding gangsters “who were visibly drunk”.
“They were accusing me of protecting the newly-elected Makonde DCC youth affairs secretary, Ketty Chanetsa, who they want removed and replaced with one of their own who had lost elections.”
The Makonde MP said the issue was reported to Mashonaland West provincial chairperson Ziyambi Ziyambi.
However, he said Ziyambi appeared powerless as Chimombe boasted that he was Mnangagwa’s confidante.
“When I was elected DCC chairman last December, both Mike Chimombe and Phillip Chiyangwa told me that they would do whatever it takes to undermine all the party programmes in Makonde simply because I had defeated their own preferred candidate, Misheck Nyarubero, whom they had sponsored against me,” Paradza said.
He further alleged that Chiyangwa and Women Affairs deputy minister Jennifer Mhlanga had pushed for the expulsion of Mnangagwa during the late former President Robert Mugabe’s era.
“I can assure you that if no action is taken against Mike Chimombe and to a larger extent Phillip Chiyangwa, then we will not recapture Chinhoyi from the MDC. But Zanu-PF is bigger than individuals,” he said.
Both Chiyangwa and Chimombe were not picking calls and also did not respond to questions sent to them on WhatsApp.
In the 2018 harmonised elections, Mnangagwa garnered only 9 000 votes against MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa’s 18 000 votes in Chinhoyi constituency.

Groceries Thief Bashed To Death

By A Correspondent- A suspected thief from Rushinga was allegedly bashed to death by five people in Mazowe after they accused him of stealing a solar panel and groceries.
Mashonaland Central provincial police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe confirmed the incident, which occurred last Friday, and identified the deceased as Rutendo Manyika.
“I can confirm a murder case at Plot 10, Mazowe where a Rushinga man was killed by five assailants, of which two of them have since been arrested and three are still at
large,” he said.
Allegations are that Manyika broke into Tambudzai Musambo (58)’s tuckshop and stole goods worth US$76.
Passers-by allegedly alerted the tuckshop owner, who teamed up with Tafara Tinarwo, Alexander Manyika, Elliot Tauro and Talent Mapuwei and meted out instant justice on him.
Steven Chidavaenzi (41) discovered the dead body the next day and filed a police report, leading to the arrest of Musambo and Tinarwo.

Justice Luke Malaba Faces Arrest
By A Correspondent- Human rights lawyer Musa Kika filed an urgent High Court application on Tuesday seeking the arrest and jailing of Luke Malaba for contempt of court after showing up for work in defiance of a judgment blocking the extension of his tenure as Chief Justice.
Kika wants Malaba locked up at the notorious Chikurubi Maximum Prison for six months if he does not “forthwith and immediately” desist “from exercising the functions of Chief Justice of Zimbabwe either in a judicial or administrative capacity.”
Malaba’s world came crashing down on May 15 following a High Court ruling by Justices Happias Zhou, Edith Mushore, and Helena Charewa, that he had ceased to be a judge as President Emmerson Mnangagwa had violated the constitution by extending his contract by five years past his retirement at 70.
But the embattled former Chief Justice started reporting for duty on Monday with Judicial Service Commission (JSC) secretary Walter Chikwana explaining that Malaba “has always been at work since the day the government noted an appeal in the Supreme Court against the order of the High Court. The suspension of the order is by operation of the law.”
But Kika countered in his application that the commission and justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi were mistaken “in taking the view that the appeal has suspended the operation of the judgment of this court.”
“This is for the reason that the judgment of the court is a declaratur and is for that reason not suspended by the noting of an appeal. The appeal noted by the second respondent does not accordingly have the effect of suspending the operation of the judgment of this court,” argued Kika, director of the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum.
Malaba’s shock ouster was triggered by two separate applications brought by Kika and the Young Lawyers Association of Zimbabwe (YLAZ).
Kika said the contempt charges were “of a serious nature”, adding the defendant must be convicted and “consequently be ordered to pay a fine in the sum of $1000,000.00”.
Furthermore, the human rights lawyer argued, Malaba must “be committed to Chikurubi [Maximum] Prison for a period of 6 months all of which is suspended on the grounds that he shall forthwith and immediately after service upon him of this order cease and desist from exercising the functions of chief justice of Zimbabwe either in a judicial or administrative capacity.”
Kika also asked the High Court to refer Malaba’s issue as “a registered legal practitioner” to the Law Society of Zimbabwe’s ethics and disciplinary committee for possible sanctions or any “such action as may be warranted by the circumstances of the matter.”
He said Malaba’s defiance was “calculated to prejudice the hearing of the appeal” which many lawyers say has created a “constitutional crisis” as all judges of the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court are cited in the initial application, which effectively precludes them from hearing the case.
Calling the former top judge’s actions “not a small matter” that brings the “judiciary into disrepute”, the applicant said it was surprising that by reporting for duty, “It did not bother him that the country has an Acting Chief Justice.”
Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza was installed as Acting Chief Justice by the JSC soon after Malaba’s removal. And Kika argued that “there has not been any succeeding official declaration of any change in the circumstance.”
Kika’s lawyer Silvaine Vongai Tendere also contended in a certificate of urgency that contrary to the government’s position, “the appeal noted does not at any rate suspend the operation of the judgment of this court.”
“The authority of the court must be restored as a matter of urgency when the position of the first respondent is considered. The contempt also puts the judiciary into irremediable dispute,” said Tendere.
The matter is yet to be heard.

“Use It Or Lose It” Policy Implemented
By A Correspondent- The government has repossessed over 80 mining concessions under the “use-it or lose-it” policy and a formal announcement will be made in due course.
Speaking to State media in a recent interview, Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando said that the government will soon issue a formal announcement regarding the repossessed idle assets.
He said:
The ‘use-it or lose-it’ policy has been implemented. We will have formal announcements in due course.
But we have repossessed over 80 assets and we will do a formal update on that, and we will continue to do that (repossessing).
We have always warned that the time was up for all those mining titleholders who were holding onto the concessions for speculative tendencies at the expense of the country.
Under the ‘Zimbabwe is open for business’ mantra, those repossessed assets will be reallocated to potential investors who really want them for productive purpose in line with the National Development Strategy 1 Agenda.
The repossessed assets were in sub-sectors that include gold, coal, and chrome, among others.
In 2020, the government announced that it was also looking forward to re-sizing some of the concessions with a huge resource base and inordinate life spans and allocate them to potential investors.-StateMedia
Cecelia Chimbiri Fumes As Zanu PF Members Gather At The Mbuya Nehanda Statue
By Jane Mlambo| MDC Alliance activist Cecelia Chimbiri has questioned the police over the selective application of the law after they allowed ZANU PF members to gather and toyi-toyi at the unveiling of Mbuya Nehanda statue yesterday.
Chimbiri who together with Harare West legislator, Joana Mamombe spend over two months in detention charged with breaching COVID-19 regulations accused the police of being ZANU PF.
“Police you arrest us and we spend 62 days etc in jails for just breathing in front of a court , How about this ? Are others above the law because they are Zanu , you need to explain this oh no wait you won’t because you are Zanu Pf police,” said Chimbiri.
Yesterday, ZANU PF members gathered at the Mbuya Nehanda statue in large numbers while some youths could be seen toyi-toying in breach of COVID-19 regulations.
Many opposition MDC Alliance members have been arrested and detained for breaching COVID-19 regulations including a case where Chimbiri and Mamombe were taken after addressing a press conference outside the Harare Magistrates Court.

“Traditional Court Out Of Jurisdiction On Mugabe Reburial Order”: Prof Madhuku

By A Correspondent- Constitutional law expert Professor Lovemore Madhuku said an order for the exhumation and reburial of former President Robert Mugabe issued by a traditional chief this week is “outrageous” and “defies common sense and logic”.
Prof Madhuku said Chief Zvimba, real name Stanley Mhondoro, has no legal authority to order the exhumation of bodies, let alone decide where they are buried well outside his area of control. He said:
It clearly appears that the traditional court has gone outside its jurisdiction, for example, the whole point of exhuming a body is not governed by customary law in Zimbabwe.
If you want to exhume any body in any part of the country, you don’t go to a customary law court.
A customary community court in this case does not have the power to order what appears to have been ordered.
The furthest they can go is to try and say whether or not Grace Mugabe would have done something wrong here, but not to the extent of making an exhumation order, so that is a reviewable ground, you can take that court to a higher court and say that it went outside its jurisdiction.
Prof Madhuku said he was convinced that Chief Zvimba’s ruling “would not stand scrutiny in any superior court because it strikes me as extremely outrageous in its defiance of common sense or logic.”
Chief Zvimba’s court sat on 20 May, and its judgement was delivered to the Mugabe rural home in Kutama where his family buried him in line with his wishes.
The traditional court fined Mugabe’s widow, Grace, five cows and a goat, for violating cultural norms in burying the former president.
Chief Zvimba also gave Mugabe’s widow – who has been in Singapore for a year and who did not attend the hearing – up to 1 July to ensure Mugabe is reburied at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.
Meanwhile, Mugabe’s family and the former president’s supporters charge that Chief Zvimba is in fact fronting for President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Mugabe’s nephew Patrick Zhuwao accused Mnangagwa of being the invisible force orchestrating the exhumation bid.
He said Mnangagwa believes that Mugabe was buried with a mystic sceptre that would give him commanding authority as a leader of Zimbabwe.

Kazembe Persecutes Makamba, Blocks Him From Contesting His Post
By A Correspondent -Home Affairs Minister, and Zanu PF Mashonaland Central provincial chairman, Kazembe Kazembe is reportedly blocking businessman, James Makamba from contesting him for the party’s provincial leadership in the looming elections.
Makamba was invited by locals to challenge Kazembe for the influential party position in Mashonaland Central after the latter had become unpopular.
Party insiders told Bulawayo24 that last week Kazembe sent police details to arrest Makamba at his rural home in Mount Darwin after his family and friends had gathered to welcome him.
Both Makamba and Kazembe could neither confirm nor deny the allegations.
“Police came and arrested Makamba accusing him of violating covid- 19 regulations but they were pleading with him that they were sent by Kazembe on political grounds since he showed interest in contesting him in the looming provincial elections, ” said the source.
Kazembe did not respond to questions sent to him by this Bulawayo24, while Makamba refused to comment on the issue.
Makamba’s alleged arrest has raised eyebrows within the Zanu PF camp in the province with locals arguing that Kazembe was ever mobilising huge crowds exceeding 50 people which are allowed under the Covid-19 set regulations.
“It is astonishing to note that Kazembe is using security agencies for political power in the name of violating covid 19 regulations yet he chairs a PCC with more than 100 people,” said Givemore Chatyoka.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa recently defied COVID-19 safety protocols set by his government after he gathered thousands of people for a cultural event in Gokwe South, hours before his Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, who doubles as Health minister, placed the City of Kwekwe under a 14-day lockdown following the outbreak of the much-feared Indian variant of the disease in the Midlands city
Nehanda Statue Money Could Have Built A New Hospital Of British Standards
By Business Reporter | The money Zimbabwe spent mounting Nehanda statue could have been used to build a new hospital of British standards, figures from the UK publisher Statista show.
The numbers show that a clinic the size of 100 square metres could have been constructed with the money used.
The cost of building a hospital per square metre in Northern Ireland is £1460.
The Nehanda statue’s metal bridge alone cost a whopping R2,1 million [£110,000] before labour and before import costs from South Africa. Correspondence with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, Zimra shows that the bridge’s steel was imported from South Africa.
Zimbabwe is one of the world’s largest producers of steel.
The erecting of the Nehanda statue comes at a time when Nehanda meternity ward, at Harare Hospital is in shambles as patients are forced to bring their own drinking water from home.

How Many Hospital Wards Would’ve Been Built at Nehanda Maternity Ward, With the Materials Used for Statue, FootBridge?
Who Is Mbuya Nehanda, Charwe Nyakasikana?

Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana also known as Mbuya Nehanda (c. 1840–1898) was a svikiro, or spirit medium of the Zezuru Shona people of Zimbabwe. She was a medium of Nehanda, a female Shona mhondoro.(powerful and respected ancestral spirit)
As one of the spiritual leaders of the Shona, she was one of the leaders of a revolt, the Chimurenga, against the British South Africa Company’s colonisation of Zimbabwe led by Cecil John Rhodes in 1889. She was a Hera of the Hwata Mufakose Dynasty. She and her ally who some historians claim was her husband, Sekuru Kaguvi were eventually captured and executed by the Company on charges of murder. She has been commemorated by Zimbabweans through the building of statues in her name, street names, hospitals, songs, novels, and poems. The legacy of the medium continued to be linked to the theme of resistance, particularly the guerrilla war that began in 1972. Her name became of increasing importance to the nationalist movements in Zimbabwe
The spirit Nehanda is said to be the mhondoro, a royal mudzimu (ancestral spirit) or “lion spirit”,that uses women as her mediums. The mediums are given the title Nehanda or Mbuya Nehanda.[6] One of the daughters of Nyatsimba Mutota, the first leader of the Munhumutapa state, was considered to possess this spirit.[7] Mhondoro spirits were revered spirits among the Shona, as it was believed that they could interpret the orders and wishes of Mwari, the senior deity.[8] The original Nehanda was considered to be Nyamhita, the daughter of the first Monomatapa Mutota, who was living in the escarpment north of Guruve in about 1430. Mutota was the founder of the Mutapa state. He had a son called Matope who later became the second Monomatapa. Matope was Nyamhita’s younger half brother, and to increase the power of Matope, Mutota ordered his son to sleep with his older half sister, Nyamhita, who became widely known as Nehanda. This incest ritual was believed to have resulted in the increase of Matope’s rule and empire. Matope handed over a part of his empire to Nehanda who became so powerful and well known that her spirit lived on in the human bodies of various spirit mediums until almost 500 years later when it was believed to occupy the body of the Mazoe Nehanda. During periods of possession by the spirit, spirit mediums were believed to be speaking with the voice and personality of the original Nehanda and not with their own
Charwe Nyakasikana was born in 1840, in what is today called the Chishawasha District located in Central Mashonaland. She was the daughter of a man named Chitaura, who was the younger son of Shayachimwe. Shayachimwe, founded the Hwata dynasty in the upper Mazowe valley in the late eighteenth century. She married and had two daughters and a son, but the name of her husband is not recalled. Living in the hills around Mazoe, Zimbabwe, in the mid 19th century, were various subchiefs including Chidamba. In Chidamba’s village lived Charwe Nyakasikana, who was considered to be the female incarnation of the oracle spirit Nehanda. D. N. Beach suggests that she became possessed by the spirit in 1884
As medium of the spirit Nehanda, Nyakasikana made oracular pronouncements and performed traditional ceremonies that were thought to ensure rain and good crops. She held great authority even before the 1896-7 rebellion. She was a powerful woman and staunchly committed to upholding traditional Shona culture. In a map drawn by missionaries (c. 1888) displaying work by the Church, there is a village called Nehanda’s. Mbuya Nehanda was instrumental in organising the nationwide participation in the First Chimurenga of 1896–7. King Lobengula recognized her as a powerful spiritual medium in the land. During the arrival of the first European settlers, Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana occupied an important and influential position in the religious hierarchy in Mashonaland, where she is the only recorded woman known to have held such a significant position during the 19th century.
Spirit mediums at first promoted good relations between the Zezuru people and early European settlers. As white settlement increased in the land, according to sources Nehanda initially welcomed them by the pioneers and counseled her followers to be friendly towards them. “Don’t be afraid of them,” she said, “as they are only traders, but take a black cow to them and say this is the meat with which we greet you.” Unfortunately relationships became strained when the settlers started imposing taxes on the Matabele and conscripting them for various labor projects. Following the imposition of a “hut tax” and other tax assessments in 1894, both the Ndebele and Shona people revolted in June 1896, in what became known as the First Chimurenga or Second Matabele War. The rebellion, in Mashonaland at least, was encouraged by traditional religious leaders including Nyakasikana. Due to the cultural beliefs of the locals, the leading roles behind the rebellion were three spirit mediums. The rebellion was initiated in Matebeland in May 1896, the leading role there being Mukwati, in October 1896 Kaguvi and Nehanda from Mashonaland joined in; these were the three critical people behind the rebellion.
Kaguvi (aka Kagubi) was believed to be the spirit husband of the other great Shona spirit, Nehanda, and it may have been this connection which enabled him to persuade Mbuya Nehanda to preach the gospel of war in Mashonaland, which led to the first Chimurenga. The role as well as the influence of the spirit mediums in form of Kaguvi and Nehanda, cannot be understated. As far as the people were concerned Nehanda and Kaguvi were the voices of God aka ‘Mwari’. Kaguvi and later Nehanda (after being convinced by Kaguvi) preached that according to Mwari the cause of all the trouble that had come upon the land was the white man. They had brought the locusts and the rinderpest, and to crown it all the owners of the cattle which had died were not allowed to eat the meat of the carcasses, which had to be burned or buried. Mwari decreed that the white men were to be driven from the country; that the natives had nothing to fear because Mwari would turn the bullets of the white man into water. A public press photograph was taken of Nehanda and Kaguvi in 1897 to display their success.
After the end of the rebellion in 1897, Nyakasikana was captured and charged with the murder of Native Commissioner Henry Hawkins Pollard in 1896. She was found guilty after eyewitnesses claimed that she had ordered an associate to chop Pollard’s head off. Consequently, she was hanged in March 1898. Much mythology grew up around the difficulty involved in killing her.
Legacy
Nehanda’s heroism became a significant source of inspiration in the nationalist struggle for liberation in the 1960s and 1970s. Her name is now usually prefixed by the respectful title of Mbuya, or grandmother. The maternity section of Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare is named after her. The College of Health Sciences of the University of Zimbabwe is located there as well.

Man Disarmed, Killed With Own Machete
A 20-YEAR-OLD man from Zhombe, Midlands Province died on admission to hospital after being attacked by a machete during a nasty fight with his neighbours whom he had provoked over an undisclosed grudge.
Allen Ndlovu of Dumezweni Village under Chief Ntabeni died upon admission to Kwekwe General Hospital where he had been rushed after being disarmed and attacked with his own machete.
Midlands Police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident that occurred on Monday afternoon at Majanjathini Shops in Zhombe.
“Police are investigating a case of murder and assault emanating from a fight over a long-standing dispute. A 20-year-old man, Allen Ndlovu, died after being struck with a machete after the misunderstanding,” Inspector Mahoko said.
He said the now-deceased was the first to attack but was later disarmed and hacked with his own weapon.
“On 24 May around 3PM, Ndlovu was in the company of his brother Thokozani Ndlovu (24) at Majanjathini tuckshops where they met Tarisai Makore aged 35. A misunderstanding arose over a long-standing grudge involving Allen and Makore and his brothers. Allen, who was armed with a machete then struck Makore on the left hand,” said Inspector Mahoko.
Makore’s brothers, Mavhu Makore (38) and Vusa Mpinga (25) who were at their homestead near the shops, noticed the drama unfolding and ran to intervene.
Upon seeing the brothers approaching, the now-deceased tried to flee.
“The now deceased unfortunately tripped and fell and the two brothers caught up with him. They disarmed him and used his machete to strike him several times all over the body,” he said.
The matter was reported to police and Ndlovu was ferried to Kwekwe General Hospital where he died upon admission.
Makore was treated and discharged.
“Police are again appealing to members of the public to always prioritise settling disputes through dialogue and desist from violence,” said Inspector Mahoko.- Chronicle

Suspected Zanu PF Activists Torch MDC Alliance Official’s House
A three-roomed house belonging to MDC-Alliance spokesperson for Chikomba West Constituency Noel Kureva was set alight on Saturday afternoon destroying property worth US$3 000, Masvingo Mirror reports.
The incident happened at around 3 PM when Kureva and his family were away.
Kureva confirmed the incident and he suspects an act of violence from ZANU PF activists.
The matter was reported at Beatrice Police Station under RRB number 4321996.
MDC-Alliance Youth Secretary for Chikomba West Constituency Nyemudzai Mubayiwa told the publication that Kureva has been receiving threats from the ruling party.
Mubayiwa said ZANU PF supporters wanted Kureva to vacate a plot he occupies allegedly because he is a member of an opposition party.
He expressed concern at the increasing number of cases of political violence in Mash East, the hotbed of political killings in previous elections.
However, ZANU PF Chairman for Mashonaland East province Michael Madanha distanced the ruling party from the incident which he said was against the Zimbabwean culture. Madanha said:
As ZANU PF, we do not support this kind of terrorism. We are much against this behaviour and we are saying the issue must be investigated by the Police so that the criminals are apprehended.
There are some individuals who want to tarnish our political party as we are towards the elections and they try to cover up using the ZANU PF name.
Again, we should not be hesitant to talk about the in-house fights in the opposition party and this might be also the cause.
Property including sofas, television sets, radio, cement, maize, groceries, bicycles and blankets was lost in the inferno.- Masvingo Mirror

Muguti Speaks On ‘Poisoning’
Harare provincial development co-ordinator (PDC) Tafadzwa Muguti, who has been reportedly under the weather after being poisoned by his nemeses for fighting land barons and corruption, yesterday vowed that he would not be intimidated and would continue busting graft despite threats to his life.
Muguti was appointed last year, but of late, he has been absent from office amid reports that he had been poisoned for exposing land barons. He spoke for the first time yesterday following his return to work last month.
“I am not commenting on that (poisoning) issue, but what I can only tell you is because of our job, our lives are always under threat,” Muguti told NewsDay.
“We are living in violent and politically toxic times, and my job comes with its consequences and all I can say is that we are protected by the Lord Almighty. We are not targeting individuals, we are targeting the wrongs being done by people and if we can fix that then we can go far,” he said.
Muguti said his name had been abused by namedroppers who were viciously fighting him because they felt he had disturbed their “feeding trough”.
“Let me be frank, my job as PDC has come under a lot of resistance because people feel we are removing them from their feeding trough. The abnormalities at the City of Harare had become the normal way of life.
“From the economic side, economic sabotage had become a way of life and so were land barons in the same manner as drugs are now viewed as a way of life. My job as a senior government official is to bring order in the province. I am not employed to make
friends. I am employed to create a conducive working environment in the city and not to make friends. My job requires energy, I cannot please criminals,” he said, adding that he believed in servant leadership.
“People try to even forge my signature in their deals, but that will all come to an end. Let us make corruption unattractive and call a spade a spade. We will descend on all economic crimes in the city.”
Sources said Muguti was reportedly poisoned after he stepped on several land barons’ toes, mostly those affiliated to the ruling Zanu PF party and the opposition MDC formations after the Justice Tendai Uchena land audit report stated that over US$3 billion worth of land was lost in a scam involving top politicians. -Newsday

Govt Not Serious About Chombo, Says Magistrate
The state was on Monday told to take seriously proceedings into the matter in which former Cabinet minister Ignatius Chombo is accused of corruptly parcelling out State land and duping home-seekers through his cooperative.

Chombo, is facing charges among others, of abuse of office and fraud involving the parceling out of land in Harare and Zvimba communal lands.
Harare regional magistrate Mr Stanford Mambanje said the State was supposed to respond to Chombo’s application challenging his placement on remand on the six counts of corruption-related charges.
“The accused made an application on April 15 and the State has not responded. The State should respond before end of day today (yesterday) and should take the proceedings seriously,” said Mr Mambanje.
Chombo distanced himself from Cavford (Pvt) Limited, which the State alleges he allocated a stand.
-Herald
Luke Malaba Faces Arrest | Full Text

The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum’s Executive Director, Dr Musa Kika, on 25 May 2021 filed an urgent court application seeking the committal of former Chief Justice (CJ) Luke Malaba to Chikurubi Prison for a period of 6 months for defying a High Court order issued by Justices Zhou, Mushore and Charehwa on 15 May 2021.
Kika, who was the applicant in the matter which was joined with another application filed by the Young Lawyers Association, secured a declaratory order in terms of which the High Court declared that Malaba’s tenure as a judge and Chief Justice of Zimbabwe had come to an end at 00:00hrs on the 15th of May 2021. However, in complete defiance of this order, the former CJ presented himself at his office on 24 May 2021.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Secretary, Walter Chikwanha, was quoted in The Herald newspaper of 25 May 2021 as having confirmed the return of Malaba because of an appeal which the JSC noted. Kika however submits in his founding affidavit that the JSC’s view that the appeal has suspended the operation of the judgment of the High Court is incorrect as the judgment of the court is a declaratur and is for that reason not suspended by the noting of an appeal. He further stated that as a jurist of distinction, Malaba is aware of this position but has simply decided to be in contempt of court.
Kika seeks to have the prison term suspended on the grounds that Malaba shall forthwith cease and desist from exercising the functions of CJ either in a judicial or administrative capacity. Kika is also seeking to have an order that the record of these proceedings be placed before the Law Society’s Disciplinary and Ethics Committee for it to take any action that it may find advisable and appropriate, considering the circumstances of the matter.
MDC Alliance Assembly Of Women Statement On Africa Day
Tinashe Sambiri|Women have nothing to celebrate on Africa Day…
This was said by the MDC Alliance Assembly Of Women in a statement on Africa Day celebrations.
See statement below:
MDC ALLIANCE ASSEMBLY OF WOMEN STATEMENT ON AFRICA DAY
The MDC Alliance Assembly of Women joins the rest of Africa today 25 May in celebrating Africa Day.
This is the day when Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was formed which later changed to African Union (AU) in 2001. Zimbabwe is a member of this body where the promotion of International Cooperation with due regard for the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is one of the core objectives.
We celebrate this day with tears on our cheeks as women, mothers and girls of the African continent who continue to suffer economically, politically and socially because of policies and decisions made by leaders who do not want to give us our Democratic space. Africa is dominated by leaders who are dictators and who want to cling on to power through undemocratic means such as election rigging, torturing and silencing voices of dissent, sexually abusing female politicians unlawful detentions and killing of opposition members amongst others.
490 million people in Africa are living in extreme poverty whilst more than 72% of Zimbabweans live below the National Poverty Line (NPL) of which women and girls constitutes a bigger percentage of this.
Women and girls continue to live under difficult conditions where they cannot afford basic needs like sanitary wear, clean environment, sound health delivery system and many more because of collapsed economies due to poor governance and misplaced priorities. Women empowerment and gender equality remains a myth.
We continue to experience abductions and sexual harrassment from security officers who are supposed to be protecting us. The governments have become perpetrators and the AU is silent about all this. It has become a toothless bulldog which cannot protect its citizens from violations of the human rights as witnessed by its quite diplomacy in the case of the trio Joanna Mamombe Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova which got the intervention of the International bodies and Embassies whilst African Union remained silent.
We are much worried as women when crimes against humanity especially against women just go unpunished and wonder who will actually protect us. Our country is being governed by terrorists who are being protected by the AU leaving the majority of the citizens doubting its sincerity.
This is not the Africa we want. As women we want the Africa that respects women and girls, promotes democracy, allows all freedoms to prevail and promotes free and fair elections, hence we are calling for every women in the continent to resist dictatorship and speak out.

Erecting Statues More Important And Should Be Applauded: Mavaza

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | Zimbabweans received the unveiling of the great statue of Mbuya Nehanda the first ever recorded Woman army commander after Deborah of the bible. Many were elated and praised His Excellency, the president for bestowing this honour on the heroine and commander and a great spiritual guide ever to grace Zimbabwe.
However there were pockets of professional opposing figures like Hopeless Chin’ono and some social media misfits who took turns to criticise the erection of Mbuya Nehanda’s statue. Besides the confused Chin’ono the former minister of Information Prof Jonathan Moyo posted again criticising the decision to erect the statue. Jonathan Moyo can be excused he is always opposing anything as long as it is done in the new dispensation. As for Hopewell Chin’ono we all know he is singing for his supper.
To understand the culture of erecting statues let us first understand what a statue is.
Statue definition is – a three-dimensional representation usually of a person, animal, or mythical being that is produced by sculpturing, modeling, or casting. It is the likeness of a living being sculptured or modeled in some solid substance, as marble, bronze, or wax; an image; as, a statue of Hercules, or of a lion.
A statue is a sculpture representing one or more people or animals, normally full-length, as opposed to a bust, and at least close to life-size, or larger.
Statues have been produced in many cultures from from prehistory to the present; the oldest known statue dating to about 30,000 years ago. The world’s tallest statue is over 500 feet. Many statues are built on commission to commemorate a historical event, or the life of an influential person. Many statues are intended as public art, exhibited outdoors or in public buildings. Some statues gain fame in their own right, separate from the person or concept they represent, as with the Statue of Liberty.
Statues can teach us about history, but they do not convey some immutable truth from the past. Instead, they are symbolic of the fixed ideas of a specific community regarding its past, as captured at a particular point in time. They commemorate individuals and celebrate a romanticized vision of the past. They provide neither context nor an explanation of events but they carry history and honour.
Amid a country full of idiots who are hell-bent on tearing down statues in a cathartic frenzy, it is worth sparing a moment to reflect on why we erected those statues in the first place. While those who are short minded think that a monument’s primary purpose is to glorify great dead person, the reality is that they were meant to be symbols of hope and progress.
World over nations have expressed their gratitude to the heroes by curving their immortality in a statue. The common question we get from those who love opposing is:What purpose do statues serve? This question came to the fore when Zimbabwe announced plans for a memorial commemorating the great medium and army commander in her own right Chihera Charwe Nyakasikana Nehanda the great.
Many detractors raised blocking unhelpful statements like the government had not consulted members of the Mazoe community and the Nehanda family before publicising them.
This was merely the latest in a succession of recent episodes that have fuelled debates over the purpose of public monuments in society.
One may want to doubt the importance of a statue he must learn from the past few years have seen ongoing campaigns in the US to have Civil War statues commemorating Confederate figures removed from public spaces. Counter-campaigners have sought to maintain those statues as they are. What these episodes all have in common is that, within each, monuments have become lightning rods for wider conflicts between competing visions of history. It shows further that there is great honour in a statue. It becomes a symbol of gratefulness and seed meant to have an eternity effect on the generations to come.
These issues do little to alter the central point; that Zimbabwe, as we know and love it, would not exist without Mbuya Nehanda Chihera mukuru and her great leadership. All they do is suggest that the decision to focus so exclusively on Nehanda was a deliberate one.
Nehanda was ultimately chosen because she was a great canvas on which to project Zimbabwean values. She was a commander and a medium pushing the boundaries of knowledge and courage to her army. She went on to lead the second Chimurenga from the grave. And above all she was a woman from humble origins whose meritocratic success captured the hopes and aspirations of a society oppressed and raised under fear. It took the Nehanda courage to raise a successful rebellion called the second Chimurenga. No amount of money can stop the bestowing of such an honour.
Zimbabweans know that it was “an augury of the future of these great lands, our very commander was one who fought her way to success through spiritual and physical efforts, by the sword and by the spear but persevering dignity. Her life is a noble example to the people of Zimbabwe who lived under institutions which freely open the door of fame and power to all who display courage and ability.”
That is why we erect statues, not to glorify the dead, but to inspire the living. “sentiment about great events and great men to whom the country owes much is but the spark which fires men to similar achievement.”
Perhaps one of the reasons the opposition and Hopeless are so determined to tear down everything to do with statues is because they no longer believe that such inspiration is necessary. Identity politics teaches that your race, gender and class determine your life virtually without your input; the individual and their endeavour count for naught.
Circumstances certainly play their role, but they do not determine our fate. Giving in to predestination eliminates all purpose in human life.
Zimbabweans are not quite the monument builders. We have always put up commemorating statues some representing many in one.
The arguments being spread around by those who are not appreciating the honour bestowed upon Nehanda comes across as borderline silly, but it is never just about Nehanda or dwelling on the past. It is about the great society that is being constructed where Nehanda had tread. As that society faces new challenges, maybe we need some inspiration.
statues should be preserved because they teach people about the past. But is viewing a statue actually an effective way of learning about history?
An insightful way of understanding the erection of statutes is to examine the attitudes of past societies to their public monuments. Developments in 19th-century Europe, in particular, have the potential to unlock a fresh vantage point onto this contemporary issue. In that era, many political communities pursued state-building programmes that involved appropriating history to serve interests in the present. Nations devoted substantial energy and resources to commemorating heroes from the past in monumental form.
These monuments continue to shape the fabric of European cities. The gilded bronze statue of Joan of Arc installed in Paris’ Place des Pyramides in 1874, for example, remains a familiar sight in the French capital. Every summer, Joan greets the Tour de France as its riders circle the city’s historic heart during the final stage of the race. The statue of Richard I erected outside London’s Palace of Westminster in 1860 still stands proudly outside the home of Parliament. Richard’s unyielding bronze gaze has watched over defining events in the past 150 years. The fate of the grand statue of Frederick the Great erected on Berlin’s Unter den Linden in 1839 has been intertwined with the history of the city. During the Second World War, the monument was encased in protective cement.
The ways in which monuments were used in 19th-century Belgium aptly illustrate wider European trends and attitudes in that era.
In contrast to more venerable nations such as England and France, Belgian state-builders could not point to continuity through long-standing institutions and structures that had existed for centuries.. As a result, the ideas and aspirations which shaped their efforts came into focus more clearly through statues than in other states.
Seeking to use the past to stimulate feelings of communal solidarity, Zimbabwean political elites have commissioned – and provided substantial levels of funding for – scores of new monuments for the nation.
Zimbabwe’s government has signalled its intention to carry out ‘a national task’ by sponsoring the creation of new statues ‘to honour the memory of the Zimbabweans who had contributed to the glory of their country’.
This wave of Zimbabwean statuomania is not just about conveying an interpretation of the past. It is one element of a programme intended to mediate the relationship between the past and the present.
We must remember that the history of every people is written in its monuments. They reveal, without diminishment or partiality, their mores, their beliefs, their institutions. This is true for all eras and applicable to all countries, and will particularly be confirmed in Zimbabwe.
This rather self-conscious effort to assert that Zimbabwean monuments are impartial serves to confirm that precisely our heritage is contained in the monument.
The statues do not simply convey neutral, incontrovertible information about the past puts the past in a pushing position pushing us into our future. Again they present a particular view of history, one which had it that while Zimbabwean nationhood had only become a political reality in 1980.
Mbuya Nehanda’s statue will be an impulse that will be shaped the hearts and minds of the inhabitants of the Nation.
Those who will visited the capital will be able to see a tangible version of this history, cast in bronze and carved in stone.
So it is unpatriotic to criticise the honour bestowed on Charwe Chihera Nyakasikana Nehanda.
Zanu PF Forces Villagers To Fund Clinic Construction Project
Tinashe Sambiri|The Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration is forcing villagers to fund the construction of a clinic in Mwenezi District.
Those who fail to comply with the directive will be punished, it has emerged.
The MDC Alliance has described the victimisation of villagers by the regime as dereliction of duty.
Read statement below:
Dereliction Of Duty By Mnangagwa’s Govt As Villagers Are Forced To Pay For Construction Of A Clinic
25-05-2021
In a clear dereliction of duty by Emmerson Mnangagwa’s regime, villagers in Mwenezi East constituency are being forced make monetary contributions towards construction of a clinic in a resettlement area known as Janhi or Petronella farm.
While the Constitution of Zimbabwe on Section 29 clearly state that it is the role of the State ‘to ensure provision of basic, accessible and adequate health services throughout Zimbabwe”, Mnangagwa’s regime through chiefs and headmen are collecting money from poor villagers in Mwenezi.
Section 76 of the Constitution also guarantees for the Right to Healthcare for every citizen and this can never be misconstrued to mean citizens must fund for their own healthcare facilities.
Shockingly, villagers in Mwenezi East under Chief Negari are being forced to pay R20 per household for the construction of a clinic.
Ironically, the same regime that is coercing villagers to pay for construction of health facilities rejected MDC Alliance President, Nelson Chamisa’s offer to build a hospital in Gutu rural district.
Mwenezi district is one of Zimbabwe’s main faces of poverty due to its semi-arid conditions and poor annual rainfall and like most communal areas in the country, villagers survive on less than 1US dollar per day.
It is an insult to the great people of Mwenezi East constituency who have traditionally voted for ZANU PF since 1980 but the same party in government is shouldering them with extra responsibilities to fund their own healthcare facilities.
It is time the people of Mwenezi East transfer their vote to a pro-poor and pro-people MDC Alliance party led by President Nelson Chamisa.

State Media- An elderly woman from Hillside suburb in Bulawayo died mid-air on an Airlink flight number 4Z110 from Johannesburg to Bulawayo on Monday.
Mrs Jean Sicingiwe Khumalo who was in her sixties succumbed on the flight that landed at the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport just before mid-day. A Chronicle news crew yesterday visited the family’s residence where mourners are gathered.
Family spokesperson Mr Lazarus Khumalo said: “We confirm her death. She was an elderly person and was a stroke patient for the past six years or so. That is all that we can say about her health. Besides that, there isn’t much to say. We however request that our privacy be respected as we mourn.”
Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe spokesperson Mrs Annajulia Hungwe said Mrs Khumalo died during the last minutes of the hour-long flight.
“We had an unfortunate incident where a female passenger whom I cannot name because of ethical reasons died mid-air. Her death was confirmed upon landing at the airport. We will get reports from the airline, law enforcement and also health authorities on the incident which will answer questions over how the passenger died,” said Mrs Hungwe.
She said health services were called to supervise the removal of the body in compliance with Covid-19 protocols.
“Flight 4Z110 landed on schedule at the airport just before midday, and had been due to return to Johannesburg at 12.35PM. However, health authorities took time to remove the body and carry out cabin disinfection procedures on the Embraer E170LR until 2PM when the plane took off.
“Covid-19 procedures were maintained at all costs. The passenger had a test certificate taken 48 hours before travelling showing that she was negative from the virus as required by Zimbabwean Covid-19 regulations,” said Mrs Hungwe.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said police attended the scene.
“We received a report of an incident where a female passenger at Airlink died mid-air and was confirmed dead when the plane landed. We are still investigating the cause of the death. Reports will be collected from the airline, and also health authorities into the incident,” said Inspector Ncube. – Chronicle
Suarez To Remain At Atletico Madrid
Luis Suárez says he will not leave Atletico Madrid this summer after he helped the side to its first league title in seven years.
The Uruguayan striker joined Atletico last year from Barcelona on a two-year contract and the deal included a clause that would have allowed him to leave on a free transfer this year.
Speaking on Sunday during the team’s title presentation at their Wanda Metropolitano stadium, the 34-year-old affirmed his position, saying he is going nowhere next season.
“Yes, I’m sure (I’ll stay),” Suarez told Spanish network Movistar Plus.
“Atletico welcomed me from the minute I arrived … how they treated me.
“I asked the club if there was room for me on the museum wall to make history at Atletico.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Mnangagwa Has Betrayed The Pan African Agenda
Tinashe Sambiri|The Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa has betrayed the true Pan African agenda, the MDC Alliance Youth Assembly has said.
Mr Mnangagwa stands accused of allowing his bootlickers to steal and plunder national resources at will.
Below is MDC Alliance Youth Assembly spokesperson Stephen Sarkozy Chuma’s statement on Africa Day celebrations:
25 May 2021
Exactly 58 years after the formation of Organization of African Unity (OAU now AU) on this day, there is virtually nothing to write home as far as fulfillment of vision and aspirations of Africa’s founding fathers is concerned.
OAU, a noble platform created by revolutionaries and visionaries has been reduced to a club of dictators coalescing under the new banner of African Union (AU).
Where we used to have genuine African revolutionaries like Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and Kwame Nkrumah, we now have a clueless bunch of compradors, the likes Dambudzo Emmerson Mnangagwa and Kaguta Yoweri Museveni who use live bullets on their own citizens all for power.
The current looting lot we now have as our rulers are nothing more than conduits of expropriation and plunder of Africa’s natural resources.
Here in Zimbabwe, the campradors masquerading as the Second Republic are busy reversing the liberation agenda.
Vast tracks of land is being parcelled out to Chinese imperialists in Hwange and Dendairy white capitalists in Chilonga at the expense of black Africans who are being evicted from their ancestral lands.
These compradors who now pose as liberators have become the new found love for imperialists from all over the world for they pose no hindrance nor any harm to imperial interests but act as conduits to siphon Africa of her rich mineral wealth.
Imagine a whole President mortgaging our country all for obsolete buses from Belarus!
Africa’s founding fathers must be turning in their graves.
Behold, criminals running the affairs of our motherland!
Cry Mother Africa cry!
But all is not doom in our mother continent. We have a fine crop of new politicians with an unfathomable desire for an African success story.
From Zimbabwe’s Nelson Chamisa to South Africa’s Julius Malema and Uganda’s Bobi Wine, the continent can dare to dream again.
Happy Africa Day Zimbabwe!

Healthy food sometimes seems prohibitively expensive, but it doesn’t need to be. Case in point: legumes, the family of foods that encompasses beans, peas, and lentils, according to the Mayo Clinic.
While legumes are a nutritional powerhouse, that’s not all they have going for them — they’re also inexpensive, easy to find in stores, and versatile enough to work in a wide variety of dishes.
“They provide nourishment in a form that is inexpensive, highly storable, and delicious,” says Laura Poe, RDN, who is in private practice in Viroqua, Wisconsin. “They’re an affordable way to ‘stretch’ a meal, adding nutrition and bulk for very little cost.”
Legumes in their many forms should definitely be on your radar if you’re trying to cut down on your meat intake.
Beans and lentils are staples in plant-based diets thanks to their nutritional profile. “[Legumes] can make a superb high-protein substitute for meat in almost every dish,” says Shannon Henry, RDN, a registered dietitian with EZCareClinic in San Francisco. “Their refined and cooked texture means that they can fit perfectly into balls and patties. You can also use them in soups, casseroles, burgers, chili, and tacos.”
What Are Legumes?
Legumes belong to the Fabaceae or Leguminosae family. According to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the terms “legumes,” “pulses,” and “beans” are sometimes used interchangeably, but legumes technically refer to the entire plant (including the leaves, stems, and pods) while a pulse is the edible seed (such as beans, peas, or lentils).
Examples of legumes include:
Adzuki beans (aka red beans)
Anasazi beans
Black-eyed peas
Edamame
Fava beans
Garbanzo beans (aka chickpeas)
Lentils
Soy nuts
Peanuts are also technically a legume, according to Food Insight.
Legumes are a staple food in Mediterranean diets. People who live in Mediterranean countries consumed between 8 and 23 grams (g) of legumes per day, while Northern Europeans consumed less than 5 g a day, according to one study.
Common Questions & Answers
What are some examples of legumes?
The legume family includes beans, peas, lentils, soybeans (or soy nuts), and peanuts.
What is the difference between beans and legumes?
Are legumes good or bad for you?
Which nuts are legumes?
Are legumes anti-inflammatory?
What Are the Health Benefits of Legumes?
Legumes in their various forms have been shown to have the following benefits.
Provide Key Nutrients
Legumes are surprisingly nutritious, Henry says. They contain protein, fiber, B vitamins, iron, folate, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, and zinc, according to MedlinePlus.right up arrow They’re also low in fat and calories. According to past estimates, a half-cup serving of legumes contains about 115 calories, 1 g fat, 20 g carbohydrates, 8 g protein, and 7 to 9 g fiber.
“Legumes are among the highest-fiber sources of carbohydrates, giving them a lower glycemic index than other carb sources and helping with blood sugar control,” Poe says.
Deliver Antioxidants
“Beans and [other] legumes [contain] antioxidants that help prevent cell damage and [premature] risks,” Henry says. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, antioxidants can prevent or delay cellular damage, and people who eat an antioxidant-rich diet have a lower risk of several diseases — including cardiovascular disease, stroke, and cancer.
Promote a Healthy Heart
It’s a good idea to limit your intake of red meat (like beef, lamb, and pork) because of the saturated fat content, according to the American Heart Association (AHA).right up arrow Lentils and beans are great substitutes — not only to help you reduce your meat intake, but to tap into some heart-healthy benefits. According to past research, eating legumes can lower blood pressure and inflammation, which are two risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
May Lower the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
Legumes may also aid in preventing and managing serious health conditions, including type 2 diabetes and related conditions such as hypertension and high cholesterol, according to past research.
A study published in March 2017 in Clinical Nutrition found that regular consumption of legumes — especially lentils — as part of a Mediterranean diet led to a 35 percent lower risk of diabetes among older adults with a high cardiovascular risk. Those researchers found that substituting legumes for half a serving a day of eggs, bread, rice, and baked potato also helped lower type 2 diabetes risk.
Offer a Plant-Based Protein
Legumes are a great meat-free protein source and can take the place of meat in many recipes, Henry says. Following a predominantly plant-based diet — such as a vegetarian diet, a vegan diet, or a flexitarian diet — over a meat-heavy one may help lower your risk of heart disease, stroke, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and many cancers, according to the AHA. Plant-based diets were also associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association in August 2019.

Kwekwe Intensified Lockdown Begins
Kwekwe City’s intensified localised lockdown came into full swing yesterday, with a heavy police presence in the central business district, coupled with strict enforcement of existing general Covid-19 regulations for those entering shops and banking halls.
Service providers such as ZESA did not allow more than five people inside banking halls to ensure social distancing.
Zupco buses also spread out passengers on buses from yesterday, meaning many residents took a long time to get to the outer suburbs.
“We have been asked to make sure that we sanitise commuters getting into the bus and to limit them to two passengers per seat.
“We are strictly adhering to that because that is the first thing they check at police roadblocks to ensure we are compliant, said Mr Alfonse Mushayi, a Zupco driver plying the City-Mbizo route.- The Herald

Zanu PF Forces Malaba’s Return, Insists The Frail Judge Is Fit
By A Correspondent- Chief Justice Luke Malaba is back at work following the noting of appeal by the Government challenging the High Court decision nullifying the extension of his tenure.
Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi and Attorney-General Advocate Prince Machaya last week separately filed their notices of appeal against an urgent High Court judgment made on May 15.
They are challenging the High Court decision to annul the extension of Justice Malaba’s service beyond the age of 70 on the grounds that the recent Constitutional Amendment allowing judges, including the Chief Justice, the option of serving to 75 could not include sitting judges of the Constitutional and Supreme Courts but did include sitting judges of the High Court.
The noting of an appeal to the Supreme Court effectively suspends the order of the High Court paving way for Chief Justice Malaba to be back in the revered judicial office by operation of law.
This also means that Deputy Chief Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza who had assumed the position of acting Chief Justice reverts to her position as Chief Justice Malaba’s deputy.
In an interview yesterday, Judicial Service Commission Secretary Mr Walter Chikwanha confirmed that Chief Justice Malaba was back at work and executing his judicial functions.
“Chief Justice Malaba has always been at work since the day the Government filed a notice of appeal against the decision of the High Court,” he said.
“It’s by operation of the law. Once the appeal was filed the order of the High Court was in effect suspended until the determination of the appeal.”
On May 15, High Court judges — Justices Happias Zhou, Edith Mushore and Jester Charewa blocked the Government move to extend Justice Malaba’s tenure by five years as allowed by Constitutional Amendment Act Number 2.
In terms of that Act, the retirement age for all judges is now 70 but every judge has the option to serve until the age of 75 so long as they are mentally and physically fit to do so and exercise that option before their 70th birthday.
This the Chief Justice did and with his medical certificate has his term extended.
The three High Court judges ruled that the Chief Justice ceased to be the Chief Justice upon
reaching 70 years on Saturday and that the option of an extension of service did not apply to incumbent judges of the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court.
However, Minister Ziyambi and Adv Machaya want the judgment of the High Court set aside.
Chief Justice Malaba attained the age of 70 on Saturday, but as the now amended section of the Constitution allows, he exercised his option before his birthday to continue until 75 and submitted the required medical certificate that he was in good mental and physical health.
The Judicial Service Commission has since announced that Deputy Chief Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza is now the acting Chief Justice, pending the outcome of the appeal.

“Africa Day Should Awaken Us”: Temba Mliswa
Africa Day Statement – Hon. Temba P. Mliswa (MP)
Today, the 25th of May marks Africa Day, a day when we celebrate the vision of the founding leaders of this continent who in 1963 established the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) with the agenda of liberating Africa from colonial clutches.
In 2002 the OAU was transformed into the African Union (AU).
On this day we commemorate a day that speaks of the visions and unified objectives which the forefathers of this continent had. These objectives and the vision thereof resulted in the liberation of all African states.
What however abides through time, even after these positive results, is the objective to create on this continent a free and empowered people.
Having achieved the primary agenda of freedom from colonial bondage, the onus today, is not just different, but even more urgent.
The need for the economic freedom of our people is an emergency and is a much more herculean task which should be the focus of every other leader on the continent.
As a country this is an agenda which we have already been set on achieving through the past years as government has set in place various economic policies which include the Economic Structural Adjustment Plan (ESAP), ZimAsset, the Transitional Stabilisation Program (TSP) and currently the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).
However all these initiatives require unity of purposes as exemplified by the continent’s founding fathers coming together for a common agenda.
The current polarisation characterising the country is inconsistent with the goals which we intend to achieve.
In our factional camps, divided by political differences, we are delaying the achievement of such goals as, the economic emancipation of the people and the building of the foundation laid by the founding fathers in 1963 and further renewed in 2002.
I implore us all to take stock of our standing as individuals, parties and institutions and see how our conduct is aiding or derailing the achievement of goals to solidify our standing as the offspring of great minds that came together in 1963.
Africa Day should serve to awaken us to the high standards of progressive minds from whom we received the baton of leadership and inspire us to act in the correct manner.
As a continent we remain beset by poverty, wars and human degradation but let us not despair but take the torch of initiative handed by our forefathers and work towards the erasure of these blights both for ourselves and our children.
Corruption, the neglect of human rights, selective application of the law and persecution continue to remain the albatross around the neck of our country. These scourges require a direct and concerted effort towards eradication for us to experience meaningful success. Success not for just a select few, but for the majority.
Political will and unity of purpose will enable Zimbabwe to be counted amongst the powerhouses of Africa. We have the resources, we have the intellect and the people, what is required is cohesion.
So today, on this Africa Day, whilst we look back in remembrance of those who had a vision for this great continent, let us also look forward, see where we want to be and strategise how to get there.
Happy Africa Day, Zimbabwe and the rest of the continent as we witness the unveiling of the Mbuya Nehanda statue on such a befitting day acknowledging the AU theme for 2021: “Arts, Culture and Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa we Want”

FULL TEXT- ZLHR Statement On Africa Day
ZLHR STATEMENT ON AFRICA DAY
ON Africa Day, Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) calls upon members of the public to join the rest of the African continent in celebrating the successes and progress made by the continent since the creation of the Organisation of African Unity (now the African Union).
Africa Day is commemorated every year on 25 May and it is an opportunity to reflect on progress and successes of the African continent in the fight against the legacy of colonialism and unfair discrimination. It is also an opportunity for African states to reflect on the common challenges they face in today’s rapidly changing world.
The unique challenges brought about by globalisation require greater cooperation among African states and Africa Day serves as a reminder of the commitments made by the African Union (AU) towards common African goals such as economic growth, regional peace and social cohesion.
The AU’s theme for 2021 is “Arts, Culture and Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa We Want”. The theme seeks to highlight the importance of Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs) in the achievement of regional integration, inclusive and sustainable economic growth and social development.
The AU seeks to leverage Africa’s rich culture and heritage in the mission of transforming the continent and boosting the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the continent. The restoration and preservation of the continent’s rich cultural heritage and diverse languages is also an integral part of the theme for 2021.
In addition, the theme serves as an indicator of the AU member states’ commitment to investing more resources in African culture and heritage as a means of achieving greater national and regional cohesion.
In addition, the investment in Africa’s cultural heritage is an integral part of the AU’s plan for achieving the national economic and social development goals outlined in Africa’s Agenda 2063.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused untold suffering, losses and challenges
on the African continent but CCIs played a vital role in alleviating
its impact on the continent. CCIs were actively involved in preventing
and combatting the spread of the virus across the continent. The
pandemic highlighted the important role played by cultural workers in
raising awareness about the pandemic, encouraging compliance with
national and global health guidelines on how to prevent the spread of
the virus in communities and in combatting myths about the virus. The
important contributions of the CCIs helped to strengthen and protect
the health systems of African states from being overwhelmed by the
deadly virus. In addition, the work of cultural workers helped to
promote inclusion in the health sector and enhance access to health
services. The immense contributions of the CCIs during the pandemic
provide an opportunity for African states to reflect on how to include
cultural workers in coordinated plans for building resilient and
inclusive health systems.
On this Africa Day, ZLHR calls upon:
o All members of the public to join the rest of the continent in
celebrating the successes and progress of the African continent to
date;
o The public to celebrate and honour cultural workers who played a
vital role in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
FULL TEXT- LEAD’s Africa Day Statement

LEAD on Africa Day
25 May 2021
This year’s theme of Africa Day is Arts, Culture And Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa We Want.
The contentious question would be, how do we build the Africa we want, when we have the majority of the African populace ignorant of their culture and heritage. Our people have no self determination and still have a deep seated colonial mentality.
As the continent of Africa gathers today in celebration of our blackness and African heritage, Labour Economists and Afrikan Democrats (LEAD) cries out over the complete vilification and downgrading of the African people by the ruthless white supremacy racists and Arabs.
More depressing is the reversal of the gains and vision of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). The 25th of May is the day we remember the launch of the OAU which was later renamed to African Union (AU), after seriously introspecting into the matter we have come to realize that not only was the organization renamed but it was also captured to run the white man’s agenda at the expense of Africans.
Over the past 58 years Africa focused on decolonization, the struggle against apartheid and attainment of political independence for the continent. On the occasion of The Golden Jubilee headed by the African Union (AU) the continent re-dedicated herself to the attainment of the Pan African Vision.
It is in light of this that the Agenda 2063 was founded under the Pan Africanist guidelines. Fifty years after the first thirty-three (33) independent African states took a landmark decision to form the Organization of African Unity, we are looking ahead towards the next fifty years. This is the most painful thing that Labour Economists and Afrikan Democrats (LEAD) finds nothing to celebrate about. The idea is good but the implementation worries as it proves lack of seriousness and the willingness to perform.
I urge my fellow African leaders from both ruling and opposition parties to stop being mere planners but rather start implementing the unity Agenda for the purpose of improving Africa. History demonstrated through the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland that unity is productive than anything else.
The hallmark of foolishness is not merely the production of failed results but not learning anything from previous mistakes. Nkrumah in a speech to the Ghanaian National Assembly made his views loud and clear when he said, “This new Africa of ours is emerging into a world of great combinations – a world where the weak and the small are pushed aside unless they unite their forces” (Webster Boahen and Tidy, 1967:383).
We must unite for economic viability, first of all, and then to recover our mineral wealth in Southern Africa, so that our vast resources and capacity for development will bring prosperity for us and additional benefits for the rest of the world. The war against exploitation and destruction of Africa was the pre-eminent in Nkrumah’s speeches and writings.
He lamented about the division between African leaders and saw failure in division and success in unity for all African states and people. This clarion call for unity against imperialist and neo-colonialist interests fell on deaf ears and today, the IMF, EU, China, the United States of America and multinational corporations are wreaking havoc on Africa, without any regard for the peoples’ well-being.
Neo-colonialism is a monster that must be resisted if Africa is to make strides in its efforts to overcome its socio-cultural, economic and political predicaments. Many African leaders still strongly believe that the problems of Africa can solely be solved from outside Africa as epitomized by their reliance on former colonial masters thereby proving that they do not have an independent mind of their own. As LEAD we believe it’s high time that Africa seeks to harmonize her resources to move from being labelled as Third World.
We need to ask ourselves,:
“What have we contributed to the wellbeing of our countries and Mother Africa.” We need to remind ourselves that Africa is more important than us. When Africa is in shambles it discriminates not between Southern and Northern Africa or even individual countries as shown by the mass movement of people towards South Africa for better livelihoods thereby causing pressure on resources. We need to realize that we have an intergenerational duty to ensure that Africa is safe for generations to come and not only us so that those generations to come will not be forced to cry foul over our mismanagement of resources.
As the new breed of nationalism and Pan Africanism on the Zimbabwean Political landscape, LEAD is setting the record straight that as custodians of African Heritage we are disappointed by the way we continue to be treated as second class citizens in our own motherland. The way in which Africa is being governed is very retrogressive and breeds the spirit of self hate among citizens.
Since parceling out of African land by foreigners in the Scramble for Africa our continent has become the home of poverty and foreign manipulation. It worries all progressive African citizens how Libya has been turned into war zone in pursuit of foreign leadership principles defined and determined by American leadership through a bogus organization masquerading as United Nations (UN).
How do we attain the Africa we want, when global bodies are working against Africa in cahoots with world super powers. As we commemorate Africa Day today, several African countries are in conflict, their citizens living in terror & insurgents running amok killing innocent civilians in cold blood.
The situation in Chad is heartbreaking. Ethiopia’s Tigray conflict which has led to thousands of civilian deaths and displacements and allegations of war crimes and ethnic cleansing hovering over the conflict. In Ethiopia the second most populous country on the continent also has a dispute with Sudan and Egypt concerning its dam on the Nile River’s main tributary. Whilst in Mali the joint civilian military
Transition government Mali’s joint civiilian military transition after the coup last year is failing to maintain peace.
Just next door we have the Mozambique islamist insurgency in the North Cabo Delgado province which has led to a refugee crisis.
As we sit down to celebrate Africa Day we realize that after being sold a dummy we have nothing to write home about but every justification to curse our very own leadership. It is time we reshape our path as a people. Cultural degradation must stop forthwith if we are to prosper as a people.
The recent developments in Gaza are a sign that religion has been used a tool to pacify most Africans. Too much faith without practical and logical solutions to life problems is the hallmark of foolishness and must be dismissed.
As was noted by the founding fathers of Africa at the inception of the OAU in Addis Ababa, the late great icon of Africa Kwame Nkrumah highlighted the need for a United States of Africa so that we could systematically defend the continent from neo-colonialism.
In as much as it might seem as if it’s too late, we have to follow the path. The recent “NO” votes in the “Responsibility To Protect” UN resolution is another step in the right direction which all leaders in the continent should embrace.
Today we remind ourselves that our voices will never be silent when our continent is under threat. We will not rest until Africa as a whole gains recognition of being an equal participant in the decisive boards determining the human agenda at international level. We need to rededicate ourselves particularly as young people to the African Agenda which our forefathers failed to achieve during their lifetime.
History has demonstrated time and again that at critical moments in life it is the young men and women in every society who move societies. When the Ottoman Empire was under threat it is the young men and women who defended their society.
We need to remind ourselves as Africans that brothers should not rise against brothers, sisters should not rise against each other. Political conflicts should not be a matter of physical fights or wars but a battle of ideas that move society forward for the common good.
We need to recognize that we can do something to save our continent. As Africans we seek social cohesion, political stability, economic emancipation just to mention but a few and to achieve these we need to introspect and realize that united we stand and divided we fall.
As Africans we need to be mentally de-colonized and take a firm stance by going back to our culture, which we inherited from our forefathers. It is a matter of fact that we should minimize eating the food that our colonial masters are exporting to us.
We have to be mentally strong and refuse some of the food we are importing which may be unhealthy to us. Before the advent of colonialism, Africans were living much healthier and longer lives without suffering from most of the diseases that we are now faced with today.
As Africans in particular we have a moral obligation, to reflect our minds on the dangers some of these food might have on our health. We have to maintain our culture, diets, and traditions to make the West know that we are no longer in the era of colonialism and can now live independently.
The crisis of Africa can be therefore summarized in this observation. The citizens of Africa are incapacitated, firstly, in their endeavours to try and deal with the environment and secondly, in their effort to try and understand nature and carve out developmental tools.
This incapacity is premised on and compounded by Africa’s colonial legacy. Going forward there should be a deliberate effort towards mental realignment whose objective is meant to change mind-sets to inspire new self-determinist social, economic and political perceptions.
To say Afrika is incapable of economic development without the involvement of foreigners is an insult to the whole Afrikan race. Afrika is in the current position because of its colonial legacy. A number of issues need to addressed and corrected if Afrika has to move forward.
The focus of anyone who purports to champion Afrikan progress should invariably be on mental decolonisation and realignment of our traditional value systems with modern political systems.
Imperialism did not only alienate Afrikan resources but severely maimed the African thought process. It impacted on their perception of self and their ability to forge a sustainable, social, economic and political future.
The assumed low self-esteem is the arch emery and prime impediment to Afrikan societal evolution.
In a nutshell, Africa will not realize her potential unless we are united. As we celebrate Africa Day 2021 we have to be truthful to ourselves on how we can have meaningful development through home grown solutions.

Linda Masarira Africa Day Speech
We need to ask ourselves, “What have we contributed to the wellbeing of our countries and Mother Africa.” We need to remind ourselves that Africa is more important than us.

ED Lawyers Quizzed On By-Elections Suspension
By A Correspondent- High Court Judge Justice Siyabona Musithu on Monday 24 May 2021 quizzed lawyers representing President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Health and Child Care Minister Constantino Chiwenga and Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) for their bureaucratic foot-dragging in not lifting the indefinite suspension of by-elections.
Government in 2020 suspended the holding of by-elections with Chiwenga issuing Statutory Instrument 225 of 2020 which indefinitely banned the holding of all by-elections claiming that it was a precautionary measure to contain the spread of coronavirus.
But Chiwenga’s ban of by-elections was challenged at the High Court on 13 October 2020 by the Women’s Academy for Leadership and Political Excellence (WALPE), Election Resource Centre (ERC) and six Harare and Marondera residents namely Ellah Tayengwa, Moud Chinyerere, Agnes Togarepi, Gracious Matsunga, David Gwanzura and Loice Gwangwara.
In the application filed by Tendai Biti of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, WALPE, ERC, Tayengwa, Chinyerere, Togarepi, Matsunga, Gwanzura and Gwangwara, who cited ZEC, Mnangagwa and Chiwenga as respondents, argued that the suspension was a breach of the Electoral Act and the Constitution as government should have held by-elections before 30 September 2020 to fill in vacancies in local authorities and in the National Assembly.
On Monday 24 May 2021, Justice Musithu, who presided over the hearing and determination of WALPE, ERC and Tayengwa, Chinyerere, Togarepi, Matsunga, Gwanzura and Gwangwara’s application, quizzed Olivia Zvedi and Tawanda Kanengoni, the lawyers representing President Mnangagwa, Chiwenga and ZEC on why the government was reluctant to hold by-elections considering that it had eased national lockdown regulations including opening schools and universities.
Justice Musithu also asked why the government was averse to holding by-elections and yet other countries such as Tanzania and the United States of America had held polls recently.
The Judge also asked Zvedi and Kanengoni to give an indication on when the indefinite suspension of by-elections would be lifted.
In his submissions, Biti argued that the motive of imposing a ban on by-elections by the government has nothing to do with curbing coronavirus but is suppression of democracy.
He said the government had suspended the Constitution by not implementing its provisions such as holding by-elections whereas other countries in Africa and beyond have held polls and emphasised that all constitutional obligations must be complied with diligently and without delay.
Zvedi argued that it is prudent for the government to suspend by-elections in order to conquer the spread of coronavirus since the risk of a third wave of the pandemic was high.
She also argued that section 86 of the Constitution provides for the limitation of rights hence government had taken the right decision in suspending by-elections.
Kanengoni argued that holding by-elections at a time of the coronavirus pandemic would curtail effective participation of the electorate and said that ZEC could only conduct by-elections once President Mnangagwa issues a proclamation.
Justice Musithu reserved ruling after hearing submissions by Biti, Kanengoni and Zvedi and indicated that he needed more time to go through all the submissions before handing down his verdict on the application.

ED Hands Over Brand New Isuzu Double Cabs To Chiefs

By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Saturday handed over brand new Isuzu double-cab trucks to traditional chiefs, after doing the same in the run-up to the 2018 elections.
Zimbabwe has over 270 chiefs, and the new vehicles come as ZANU PF has roped in the traditional leaders to mobilise support ahead of the 2023 general elections.
This comes at a time when the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) faces an acute shortage of vehicles and hospitals across the country do not have enough ambulances.
Mnangagwa handed over the vehicles at the official unveiling of the statue of Mbuya Nehanda at the intersection of Samora Machel Avenue and Julias Nyerere Way in Harare’s central business district.
Speaking at the unveiling, President Mnangagwa said the statue was a symbol of the country’s rich past.
He said:
The unveiling of the statue of Mbuya Nehanda Nyakasikana is the manifestation of the bold commitment to reconstruct our country’s rich past and history.
It equally stands as a symbol of unity, identity and inspiration to present and future generations on the importance of unflinching patriotism loyalty fortitude and determination to defend and work for our beloved country against any odds

Facts About Diet And Nutrition
What Are Legumes?
Types, Health Benefits, Nutrition Facts, Cooking Methods, and More

S.A Donates Mealie Meal To Zim

By A Correspondent- South Africa has donated 5 625 tonnes of mealie meal worth 50 million rands to Cyclone Idai victims.
The first batch of 272 tonnes was handed over to President Emmerson Mnangagwa this morning at State House by South Africa Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor.
South Africa made the pledge in 2019 and Pandor said the donation could not come on time because of the COVID-19 pandemic that restricted movement.
Speaking during the handover of the South African mealie meal consignment, Mnangagwa said the donation was timely as it coincided with the commemoration of Africa Day.
He said:
We are pleased to be receiving this donation especially today on May 25, Africa Day when the whole continent is celebrating the successes of our collective fight against colonialism and apartheid.
Cyclone Idai was a powerful tropical cyclone that ripped through Eastern parts of the country on the night of 15 March 2019 claiming hundreds of lives and leaving a trail of destruction to property and infrastructure.
This Is Not The Africa We Want – MDC Alliance Assembly Of Women

Prophet Oders Married Couples To Have More S*x To Have Male Twins
Own Correspondent| Controvesial Zimbabwean preacher and slayqueens godfather Isaac Makomichi has ordered married couples to have more s*x in order to have male twins.

How Mnangagwa Has Betrayed The Pan African Agenda

Mnangagwa Forces Villagers To Fund Clinic Construction Project

“ED Behind Mugabe Exhumation”
By A Correspondent- Exiled former deputy cabinet minister Godfrey Gandawa asserted that Mugabe’s relatives’ seeming paranoia that drove them to secure the former president’s body with multiple concrete blocks now appears well informed.
Gandawa also said Chief Zvimba’s ruling ordering the exhumation and reburial of the late former president Robert Mugabe shows that President Emmerson Mnangagwa is behind the whole process.
Gandawa argued that had the chief acted on his power as a traditional leader, he wouldn’t have ordered the reburial of Mugabe’s remains at the National Heroes Acre but in Kutama. Gandawa wrote on Twitter:
The seeming paranoia of Mugabe’s family, in securing his body with multiple concrete blocks, now appears well informed as we witness Mnangagwa’s macabre and desperate attempt to take control of Mugabe’s corpse, and whatever they believe it has, two years his death.
Mnangagwa’s actions are an embarrassment to the nation and further reduce our estimation in the eyes of the world.
It is unheard of for a president, via his proxies, to harass the widow of his predecessor in a bid to access his remains for unclear purposes. It is a disgrace.
Speaking to City Press from the Mugabe homestead at Kutama Village in Zvimba during the burial in September 2019, Mugabe family spokesperson, Leo Mugabe revealed that Mugabe was buried in a tamper-proof casket.
He said:
You know some people have an inclination for rituals. We are afraid that some people are after his body parts or even his whole body and they want to use that for rituals.
… the casket is tamper-proof and there is nothing unusual about that because we are trying to follow his last wishes which he confided to his wife before he passed on; he intimated that there were people who wanted to use his body for rituals.
Chief Zvimba, born Stanley Urayayi Mhondoro, gave an ultimatum until 1 July 2021 by which date both exhumation and reburial should have taken place.

The murder which was captured on CCTV from one of the nearby buildings occurred along 10th Avenue between Fort street and Joshua M N Nkomo street.
One of their victims: a 26-year-old man who was a resident of Pelandaba West succumbed to the injuries while the other one is admitted to Mpilo Central Hospital and is said to be in a critical condition.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Abedinico Ncube confirmed the incident.
“I can confirm that we are investigating a case of murder and one of attempted murder. Four suspects have since been taken into custody, Trust Emmanuel Moyo of Cowdray Park, Bongani Dube of Nguboyenja, Tatenda Matsvimba of Fletcher road Trenance, and Earnest Sibanda of Mpopoma were arrested and detained at ZRP Bulawayo Central,” said Insp Ncube. “At around 10 PM on Friday, the now deceased was walking in the company of the informant and his friend along 10th avenue between Fort street and Joshua Nkomo street, Bulawayo going towards TM Hyper. They were approached by six unknown male adults who disembarked from a blue and black Honda Fit and attacked them. The accused persons used big stones to hit the deceased and his friend on the head and face.”
Insp Ncube said the deceased sustained severe head injuries.
“His friend sustained head, facial injuries and is admitted to Mpilo Central hospital and is in a critical condition,” he said.
CCTV footage showed the gang chasing after people on a pavement of a shop.
After catching up with them, a gang member who was holding a very big boulder used it to crush the heads of the two men.
After the attack, the gang members left for their car but returned shortly afterwards, searched their victims and took their belongings before driving off.
Good Samaritans arrived and ferried the man who was still alive to hospital.
“Investigations are in progress and some follow ups are being made, members of the public are urged to come forward with any information that may lead to the culprits’ arrests,” said Insp Ncube.
“We are appealing to the members of the public to assist us in locating a blue and black Honda Fit which is used to commit robberies.
Members of the public are also advised to comply with curfew regulations as this heinous case occurred well into curfew.”-statemedia

5 Zim Hospitals Operate Without CEOs
By A Correspondent- Zimbabwe’s five major hospitals are still without substantive chief executive officers (CEOs) more than a year after they were fired, while most departments in the Health and Child Care ministry are being headed by acting directors, NewsDay reported.
Health stakeholders yesterday said this impedes the smooth running of hospitals and government programmes.
Last year, the Health and Child Care ministry fired five chief executives at the country’s major hospitals as part of a restructuring exercise to enhance operational efficiency, effectiveness and accountability.
The axe fell on Nonhlanhla Ndlovu (United Bulawayo Hospitals), Leonard Mabandi (Ingutsheni Central), Ernest Manyawu (Parirenyatwa), Tinashe Dhobbie (Sally Mugabe) and Enock Mayida (Chitungwiza Central Hospital).
Some directors in the ministry were also sent on leave, resulting in several departments operating without substantive heads.
These include the preventive health, nursing services, finance, human resources and pharmacy and family health departments, among others.
Community Working Group on Health executive director Itai Rusike yesterday expressed concern over the issue, saying threequarters of directors in the Health ministry were in acting capacity.
“We are worried that when one is on an acting capacity, s/he would not be job-secure and morale would be low, which would impact negatively on their work output, overall performance and even their own health,” Rusike told NewsDay.
“It should be noted that an acting director’s job is essentially to keep the organisation functional until the director returns or someone is appointed. With the current problems facing the health sector, it is important that substantive directors, who can change policies or implement them without fear, are appointed for the smooth operation of the sector,” he said.
In February this year, HSB board chairman Paulinus Sikhosana said government was finalising compensation packages for fired managers before recruiting substantive CEOs.
Health analysts, however, said replacements for the fired CEOs should be appointed urgently.

Zanu Pf MP Demands To Control NGOs
By A Correspondent- Chiredzi North Member of Parliament Roy Bhila (Zanu-PF) recently caused a stir after he demanded control over activities initiated by non-governmental organisations in the south-eastern Lowveld.
In particular, Bhila wanted to be involved in a US$19 million USAid Zimbabwe-initiated Resilience ANCHORS project targeted to benefit communities living around wildlife sanctuaries.
The project, which started in July 2020, is expected to run until July 2025. It will benefit wards in Bikita and Chiredzi, which are close to conservancies where human-wildlife conflicts are rampant.
African Wildlife Foundation (AWF)’s Cyril Moyo told a stakeholders’ meeting on Friday that the project would be implemented in Save Valley, Gonarezhou and Bubye landscapes.
During the question and answer session at the meeting, Bhila said as an MP he needed to be consulted each time an NGO launched a project in his constituency. He accused Chiredzi district development co-ordinator of sidelining him.
“As an MP who has an oversight role, I am disappointed that a project was launched in my constituency without being consulted. You just came here to make me rubber-stamp what I don’t even know.
“Save Valley conservancy is in ward 24, the ward is not here as participants. I am sure you are excluding it on the grounds that it is in the resettlement area. People in those areas are being mauled and killed by animals, but Save Valley Conservancy is not even compensating the victims’ families or footing the funeral expenses.
“You heard the Save Valley Conservancy chief executive officer, Robin Bouckaert acknowledging that people have been killed by animals in the past months, but the staff didn’t bother to attend the funeral in solidarity with the community. Human-wildlife conflict should be addressed once-andfor-all not the talk shows we used to witness in the past,” Bhila said.-newsday
Judge Quizzes Mnangagwa, Chiwenga And ZEC Lawyers Over By-Elections Ban
By A Correspondent| High Court Judge Justice Siyabona Musithu on Monday 24 May 2021 quizzed lawyers representing President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Health and Child Care Minister Constantino Chiwenga and Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) for their bureaucratic foot-dragging in not lifting the indefinite suspension of by-elections.Government in 2020 suspended the holding of by-elections with Chiwenga issuing Statutory Instrument 225 of 2020 which indefinitely banned the holding of all by-elections claiming that it was a precautionary measure to contain the spread of coronavirus.
But Chiwenga’s ban of by-elections was challenged at the High Court on 13 October 2020 by Women’s Academy for Leadership and Political Excellence (WALPE), Election Resource Centre (ERC) and six Harare and Marondera residents namely Ellah Tayengwa, Moud Chinyerere, Agnes Togarepi, Gracious Matsunga, David Gwanzura and Loice Gwangwara.
On Monday 24 May 2021, Justice Musithu, who presided over the hearing and determination of WALPE, ERC and Tayengwa, Chinyerere, Togarepi, Matsunga, Gwanzura and Gwangwara’s application, quizzed Olivia Zvedi and Tawanda Kanengoni, the lawyers representing President Mnangagwa, Chiwenga and ZEC on why government was reluctant to hold by-elections considering that it had eased national lockdown regulations including opening schools and universities.
Justice Musithu also asked why government was averse to holding by-elections and yet other countries such as Tanzania and the United States of America had held polls recently.T
he Judge also asked Zvedi and Kanengoni to give an indication on when the indefinite suspension of by-elections would be lifted.
In his submissions, Biti argued that the motive of imposing a ban on by-elections by government has nothing to do with curbing coronavirus but is a suppression of democracy. He said government had suspended the Constitution by not implementing its provisions such as holding by-elections whereas other countries in Africa and beyond have held polls and emphasised that all constitutional obligations must be complied with diligently and without delay.
Zvedi argued that it is prudent for government to suspend by-elections in order to conquer the spread of coronavirus since the risk of a third wave of the pandemic was high.

Former Zanu Pf Leader Kudzanai Chipanga Back
By A Correspondent- Former Zanu-PF youth leader Kudzanai Chipanga has bounced back into mainstream politics after he was cleared by the ruling party’s Manicaland provincial executive, and now awaits politburo endorsement.
This announcement was made during the party’s provincial co-ordinating committee (PCC) meeting held in Mutare last week. Other former members seeking to revert to Zanu-PF are ex-provincial youth member Taurai Chiripamberi and James Kaunye, who had defected to former VicePresident Joice Mujuru’s Zimbabwe People First party.
The PCC meeting was attended by Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa, provincial chairperson Mike Madiro and former Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa.
“The issue of Kudzi Chipanga and others was tabled at the PCC meeting and in his remarks, comrade Patrick Chinamasa noted that if Chipanga was endorsed in his Makoni district, then the province had no objection. In fact the province had no objection,” said a party official, who refused to be named. Another source weighed in saying the names would now be forwarded to the politburo for consideration.
Madiro said he was not at liberty to disclose the names of those cleared to rejoin the party, adding that it was an internal process.
“Yes, we had a PCC, but on the issues of the names, it’s an internal process and I am not at liberty to disclose the names of the people concerned, which are forwarded to the party leadership for consideration,” he said.
“Yes, as Zanu-PF, we have names of people who have applied to be re-admitted to the party because they are happy with the vision of the party.”
Chipanga was fired by Zanu-PF in 2017 together with several other members aligned to the G40 cabal at the height of Zanu-PF factional fights.

Kazembe Kazembe Slapped With US$90k Lawsuit
By A Correspondent- Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe has been slapped with a US$90 000 lawsuit by three Harare women who were arrested and detained in Mabvuku suburb early this year for allegedly breaching Covid-19 regulations.
The three women are Linda and Millicent Mbundire as well as Mavis Katuka, claim they were arrested while they had left their homes to go and purchase some food items for their families.
The women say they were within 500 metres from their homes when they were arrested and detained for two days.
In their court challenge, the women cited Police Commissioner General Godwin Matanga, Officer in Charge of Mabvuku Police Station and one Constable Aleck as respondents.
They are each demanding US$15 000 for unlawful arrest and US$15 000 for unlawful detention.
In their declaration, the trio said the incident happened on February 13 this year when government moved to tighten its lockdown measures during the second wave of the pandemic.
Court has been told the three, who are neighbours, were arrested while within a 500-metre radius from their homes.
Linda Mbundire said when she got arrested, police seized her laptop, cell phones and passport and arrested her without warrant.
“The arrest was arbitrary and without just cause. Consequent to the unlawful arrest, each of the plaintiffs suffered damages in the sum of US$15 000 for unlawful and wrongful arrest,” she said.
After their arrest, the three said they were detained at Mabvuku Police Station between 13 and 15 February 2021.
Mbundire said the police “did not observe the Wednesbury principles and also failed to comply with the strict requirements of the Covid-19 regulations they purported to be implementing. The detention was needless, malicious and unlawful.”
According to court papers, on February 15, the trio was threatened and made to pay admission fines by Constable Aleck for purposes of securing their liberty.
Their lawyers, Mbizo, Muchadehama and Makoni said the charge in respect of which they were made to pay an admission of guilt did not exist.
For this, the three again demanded US$15 000 each as compensation plus interest.
The matter is yet to be heard.

MDC Alliance Activists Acquitted
Gutu – Two prominent MDC activists who were allegedly arrested by Police for wearing face masks inscribed with opposition leader Nelson Chamisa’s name have been acquitted by a Gutu magistrate.
Magistrate Mandlenkosi Ndhlovu dismissed the State case before going to full trial this morning. He said Police may have abused their power in the arrest of the two and depended on mere speculation.
“This case is like a boxing ring scenario where the law enforcement agents have an upper hand over their opponents before the match has even begun,” said Ndhlovu in the ruling.
He said that Police failed to establish a prima facie case against Charles Zvenyika and Edward Chagonda who were represented by Knowledge Mabvure of Chihambakwe Law Chambers and therefore the case was thrown out.
Magistrate Ndhlovu described statements by the arresting Police officers as inconsistent, contradictory and lacking the most crucial evidence to establish a case against the two.
He found out that Police arrested the two for touting but then went on to charge them for criminal nuisance. He said for one establish a prima facie case in a criminal nuisance case they Police needed members of the public who could come to court and testify that the two were indeed a nuisance.
“The State has not established the element of ‘annoyance to the public’ which is crucial to the successful conviction for criminal nuisance. The court cannot rely on the word of Police offices who were on a sting operation in the absence of independent eye-witnesses,” said the magistrate.
The two activists however, told the court that they were being arrested for wearing a mask inscribed Chamisa Chete Chete. They said the arresting officers told them that the law enforcement agent could not allow them to walk around with those masks.
In the case of Zvenyika, he was arrested and detained on several occasions in the past for being involved in MDC activities. He has a pending case in the courts where he lost three fingers when a Police officer banged a door against his hand at Gutu Police Station.
Zvenyika told The Mirror after the ruling that he was happy at the ruling as Police at Mpandawana is always targeting him. He said he spent almost a week behind bars for the trivial case which calls for a small fine.

Luke-ing the Beast in the Eye: The rogue vote that put Africa to shame
By Luke Tamborinyoka| Today is Africa Day. This is the day we ought to revel with pride in our African-ness, notwithstanding last week’s continental shame when Africa saw some of her States either voting against or abstaining in a key resolution that is in keeping with the cardinal African values of solidarity and intervention.
Through the Constitutive Act of the African Union, Africa as a regional body has already domesticated the principle of R2P or the Responsibility to Protect, which is very much consistent with the African value of solidarity. Yet Zimbabwe last week was part of the roll of shame when it opposed a United Nations General Assembly resolution that seeks to protect vulnerable groups against genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity. In this African contingent of shame, Zimbabwe was joined by fellow African nations Burundi, Eritrea and Egypt while Angola, Algeria, Cameron, Kenya, Namibia, Mali and Ethiopia abstained In a key vote supported by our neighbours Botswana and South Africa.
The guilty are afraid.
It is reprehensible that on the eve of Africa Day, Zimbabwe would join rogue nations in opposing intervention in circumstances of heinous crimes that offend the very precept of humanity. On 4 October 2019, I wrote the follow piece for nehandaradio. com which remains pertinent especially against the background of uninformed African nations who are unaware that by being signatories to the AU Charter, they have in fact acceded to the chastity of R2P or the Responsibility to Protect, the largely noble principle under which some are today calling on the rest of Africa to intervene and save Zimbabwe from the precipice.
My brother George Charamba, for all his frothing and fulminations about sovereignty, is certainly unaware that the AU Charter, to which Zimbabwe is a signatory, in fact to a large extent domesticates the doctrine of R2P under Article 4 (h) which empowers member States to intervene on respect of “grave circumstances.” And by any definition, genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity are grave circumstances.
Africa must bring ED’s murderous regime to account
By Luke Batsirai Tamborinyoka
The African Union must, for the sake of its reputation if not for anything else, urgently intervene in Zimbabwe to save the lives of innocent citizens that are at serious risk from the murderous, vampire regime of Mr. Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The AU charter provides the continental body with adequate provisions that deal with dire situations such as the one in Harare where innocent citizens, including doctors, teachers, civic and political activists have been murdered, abducted and brutalized by their own government.
Notwithstanding the controversies of the principle of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) and the excesses of the powerful nations after the invocation of the principle in Libya in 2011, the R2P principle remains relevant in today’s World especially in Africa.
R2P remains a laudable promise to brutalized citizens that the world will not fold its hands while innocent citizens are being brutalized, even by their own governments. It is commendable that with the advent of the AU in 2000, the continental body came up with its own version of R2P that is steeped in the founding charter of the African Union. Article 4(h) of the constitutive Act of the AU unequivocally grants the continental body with the right to intervene in a member State in respect of “grave circumstances.”
Indeed, “grave circumstances” are an apt summation of the situation in Zimbabwe where some 25 people have been callously murdered by the Mnangagwa regime. I will posit that these callous murders constitute a crime against humanity and the world, particularly Africa, cannot afford to fold their hands while an African government metes out such heinous brutality against its own citizens.
The blood-soaked legacy of Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa since the pilfered election of July 2018 is a matter of public record. The Mothlante Commission, appointed by none other than Mnangagwa himself, concluded that Sylvia Maposa, Ishmael Kumire, Gavin Dean Charles, Challenge Tauro, Brian Zhuwawo and Jelous Chikandira were murdered by the police and the military to whom Mr Mnangagwa is the Commander-in-Chief. At a personal level, I am particularly pained by one of the six slain innocent Zimbabweans, Ishmael Kumire who hailed from Matope village in my hallowed rural hood of Domboshava.
The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission, an independent constitutional commission, similarly concluded that the State was culpable for the murders of 19 more people in January 2019. This means that in a mere 180 days, the State had killed 25 people. And what is more worrying is the deafening silence from Africa when the AU has adequate legal provisions that cover such brutal and callous acts!
When a State begins to endanger the lives of its own citizens as confirmed by the above independent bodies that have nothing to do with the MDC, it is high time Africa takes the situation seriously.
Even the abduction of comedians such as Gonyeti is no laughing matter in Zimbabwe!
Africa must prove to all and sundry that it can stand up and be counted. Africans have reposed their faith and trust in the continental body and the AU should not let them down and confirm the negative script of detractors who never see anything good coming out of our beloved continent.
The collective African conscience must be pricked when a government becomes a threat to its own people and Zimbabwe is a belated case where provisions of the AU charter must be invoked.
In fact, when a government becomes a threat to its own people, as ED’s government has become, stern action must be taken against it!
For what else is the purpose of government if it not only fails to protect citizens but becomes the biggest danger to their lives? The world, particularly Africa, has an inalienable responsibility to protect when a State on the continent becomes a threat to its own citizens.
The principle of sovereignty has become the perfect cover for rogue regimes. In fact, I will posit that the notion of sovereignty is an alien principle in Africa where the collective has always been regarded as more important than the individual.
On our beloved continent, ‘ we are therefore I am ’ is the underlying dictum as the community as a whole is more important than the individual, whether the individual is a person or a State.
In fact sovereignty is an alien concept in Africa. In a typical African village, there is no sovereign household, just as Mnangagwa should not be allowed to hide under the thin veneer of State sovereignty. In the village, if a man brutalizes even his own children and wife, neighbours and relatives will breach the sovereignty veil. They will march into his sovereign compound at any sight of trouble, barge into the homestead, break windows even, in response to the shrill cry of a troubled soul.
That is the Africa we know and that must have been the logic behind Article 4 (h) of the AU charter—that our neighbours will not fold their hands at the slightest hint of trouble at a neighbour’s house. They will involve themselves.
And indeed, there is trouble in Zimbabwe.
Zimbabweans are not safe. Citizens are not safe. Civil servants are not safe. Comedians are not safe and the citizens’ democratic right to protest and petition government has been callously proscribed, if not violently quelled. .
Indeed, no scarfed pretense can mask the mammoth humanitarian crisis unfolding in Zimbabwe.
And before we plead with the broader world, Africa must stand up and be counted.
The provisions in the AU charter are not ornamental. They should be invoked when the situation demands. And the situation in Harare is slowly becoming a threat to peace and security, aspects also covered by Article 4 (j) of the AU charter.
Mr Mnangagwa must be held to account. Africa must intervene in Zimbabwe under the novel principle of African solutions to African solutions.
Indeed, humanitarian intervention must always be allowed to tear through the narrow veil of sovereignty, which veil rogue regimes such as the one in Harare often use to hide their murderous acts. In fact, with the advent of international law and the notion of globalisation, the whole mantra of sovereignty is facing a severe threat.
Kofi Annan, an African himself and the then United Nations secretary-general asked a poignant and timeless question at the UN Millennium Summit in 2001: “ If humanitarian intervention is indeed an unacceptable assault on sovereignty , how should we respond to a Rwanda , to a Srebrenica — to gross and systematic violations of human rights that affect every precept of common humanity ?”
Indeed, how should our brothers and sisters respond to the murderous regime in Harare, if not by doing ANYTHING that it takes to protect the innocent citizens?
I posit that any procrastination in taking decisive action against the regime in Harare may yield another Rwanda. Africa has a responsibility to protect the citizens that are under siege from their own government in Harare, unless the AU wants to wait until rivers of blood are flowing across the planes of our savannah grass.
Africa should not fold its hands while citizens are under threat. After all, when the principle of R2P was sculpted, Africans were heavily involved. The African contingent that was part of the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty (ICISS) that came with the principle of R2P included Algerian top diplomat Mohamed Sahnoun and our very own Stanlake Samkange, a lawyer. These Africans were part of the history-making team led by the Australian Gareth Evans that came up with the noble principle of R2P—the responsibility to protect.
Rogue regimes such as the blood-soaked administration in Harare need decisive action taken against them. At a personal level, I feel that the world and Africa cannot watch this disaster unfold. Anything goes against a regime that has become a threat to its own citizens. Decisive action must be taken.
For what is the import of a State, especially for one that has become a threat to its own citizens?
Africa should step up to the plate and show that stern and decisive action will be taken if African citizens are threatened by their own governments, even if that government brazenly stole an election.
It will be none but ourselves as Africans who will have to make the first step!

‘ZIMBABWE REGRESSING INSTEAD OF PROGRESSING’
By Leonard Koni| I remember passing through Dubai on my way to Afghanistan, and what I used to see there is serious business.
Fifty years ago Dubai was a very small city in a desert but they have changed it into a hub of powerful economic development and activity.
Zimbabwe is not in a desert and it is endowed with large tracts of land and vast mineral resources but is ranked one of the most poorest country in the world.
Once a thriving commercial hub with the Ottoman Empire, we have reduced this nation to nothing.
Since 1980 our politicians have been busy fighting to consolidate power whilst other countries were making strides in building and improving their infrastructure.
We are the victims of decimation of our natural resources? We have spoiled everything for the love of power.
We are taking economic development for granted. We should start declaring corruption as a serious number one public enemy and a national disaster.
The state has the capacity to transform it’s economy simply with assets it already own. The danger is just immense. The economy has been destroyed through managing assets poorly. A good example is how the government has destroyed the Iron and Steel industry Zisco, Zinara, Cold Storage Commission just to mention a few.
We have a government that only prides itself in holding and winning elections on the expense of embarking on mega developing projects.
People must not be programmed to think that it is impossible to arrest criminals and corrupt government officials. Such people of that mindset must stay at the terraces whilst progressive people deal decisively with a cartel of looters in the government.
Right now ZACC appears to have lost its biting teeth or probably gone on AWOL.
We have politicians who are having more than one farm and still want to serve in the government receiving salaries and benefits whilst not paying attention to farming and production.
One cannot serve two masters at the same time. Those government officials serving in the government must decide to choose one thing whether to serve the government or do farming full time. They cannot do both because another sector will suffer. This is what is killing this nation.
With Zanu PF we are not going anywhere. 41 years into power we are failing to facelift Harare Mbare Fly Over.
How do you expect to listen to a smooth and refined sound from a scratched vinyl record?
We have a leadership which only knows looting and corruption. They don’t even care about infrastructural development. That is why forty one years after independence, we are still using old infrastructure left by Ian Smith.
In the midst of a global pandemic and economic quagmire and malaise our country has been plunged deep into a constitutional crisis. Zimbabwe is regressing instead of progressing.

Kazembe Kazembe Sued Over Unlawful Arrest And Detention
Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe has been slapped with a US$90 000 lawsuit by three Harare women who were arrested and detained in Mabvuku suburb early this year for allegedly breaching Covid-19 regulations.
