Sexually Transmitted Infections have skyrocketed in the country’s universities with over  35 %  students engaging in promiscuity.

Research carried out by the Students and Youth Working on reproductive Health Action Team (SAYWHAT) in June at four local universities established that students were indulging in sex despite limited access to contraceptives.
It was also established that despite the high numbers of STIs at these institutions, access to treatment for the infections and ARV therapy was limited at just 20 percent.
The research further noted that there was no provision of Post Exposure Prophylaxis which is given to victims of rape so that they do not contract HIV or get pregnant.
“There were not ART initiation, no post rape care, no post abortion care services as well as cervical cancer screening and control,” reads the report.
In an interview with NewZimbabwe.com SAYWHAT official, Tawanda Nyamangara, said government and parents should come to terms with the fact that youths are indulging in sex.
“This is happening in colleges and universities, and there is need for stakeholders to double their effort if we are to save the lives of this key population,” he said.
“The problem we have also discovered is that there is no comprehensive information on sexuality in tertiary education which we think is crucial to this sexually active age group.
“In some cases condoms are available in college hospitals but students cannot access them because they feel embarrassed to do so.”
