By A Correspondent| Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has announced that the government is resigning. The statement came shortly after President Vladimir Putin delivered his annual state-of-the-nation address.

Mr Medvedev made his announcement on state television with President Putin sitting next to him. Mr Putin thanked Mr Medvedev for his work but said “not everything” had been accomplished.

While the Russian Television, RT said there was nothing amiss, a BBC correspondent said Putin has clearly removed Medvedev. The BBC’s Moscow correspondent Sarah Rainsford, said the reason why Mr Putin had removed Mr Medvedev was unclear.

She said, “Crazy day in Moscow politics. Basically, Putin has removed Medvedev as PM & will take all the decisions DM would normally have taken; he’s asked ministers to stay in place until there’s a new cabinet.

Medvedev will be deputy of the Security Council – out of the way?

But why?”
