By A Correspondent| Independent Norton legislator Temba Mliswa has singled out State Security minister Owen Mudha Ncube and Local government minister July Moyo for attack saying the two are the biggest national security threats.
In a Twitter thread posted this morning, Mliswa said President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s trust has all gone due to his association with people like Mudha and July Moyo whom he said were derailing the country.
The motormouth politician said Mnangagwa will never record progress as long as he associates with Mudha and July Moyo.
Mliswa accused Mudha of violently taking over people’s mine and killing people adding that the Security minister’s reputation of violence and criminality raises questions if citizens are safe with him as one of the national leaders.

I think for progress it’s time that we name and shame those derailing this country. Who is Mudha? What credentials does he have to be the State Security Minister? None, except for his reputation for taking over people’s mines in Kwekwe and killing people.
It’s an unsavoury reputation of violence and criminality which leads to questions of how safe are we with such a leader. He is the biggest national security threat and a leader can only produce what he is.
At the DCC elections they got rid of Matemadanda because they had lost the Midlands. Going forward they won’t make progress in Midlands with characters such as Mudha.
As long the President is surrounded by characters such as Mudha& July Moyo progress will be difficult. These men lie to the President daily. Mudha has previously directed Matanga to arrest me& such pathetic actions are a reflection of the kind of man he is.
We have reached this position because trust levels have gone due to men such as these. I was attacked for defending the new administration. I have tried being faithful to them going to SADC, Brussels etc during the Restore Legacy because of the belief we had.
However all that we worked for& supported has been lost. The new admin has reneged on the very ideals of the liberation struggle. They are selling out. It’s disturbing that even before we have realised the benefits as blacks we are already experiencing such an ideological change.

By A Correspondent- The SADC bloc has congratulated Zambia’s president elect Mr Hakainde Hichilema who beat incumbent Mr Edgar Lungu in the polls that were held last week.
Botswana President and Sadc Organ on Politics, Defence and Security chairperson DR Mokgweetsi Masisi called for peace as the country goes through a transition period.
Mr Lungu on Monday morning conceded defeat while promising to ensure that there is smooth power transfer.
“Sadc remained seized with the developments in the Republic of Zambia, and engaged key stakeholders throughout the process, and notes that despite immense pressure from these highly competitive General Elections, political stakeholders were generally satisfied that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) was able to discharge its functions professionally,” said President Masisi.
“I, therefore, on behalf of SADC, wish to congratulate the President-Elect Mr Hakainde Hichilema, Leader of the United Party for National Development (UPND), for winning the 12th August 2021 Presidential Election, as pronounced by the ECZ.”
He said any aggrieved parties should channel any electoral disputes through the appropriate legal platforms.
President Masisi commended the Zambians for exercising their democratic right of electing their leaders.
“On behalf of the Sadc region, I wish to congratulate the people of Zambia for consolidating democracy in their country and the region through peaceful elections. Notwithstanding, there were reported isolated and sporadic acts of violence that are regrettable,” said President Masisi.
“Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the people of Zambia turned out in large numbers. This is the 7th time Zambia is successfully electing a President through competitive multiparty elections since the historic 1991 polls, providing vital lessons for the region and the African continent at large.”

By A Correspondent- Teachers’ unions have called on the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) to defer its June and November 2021 public examinations following the COVID-19-induced disruption of the school calendar which suspended in-person lessons for the better part of last year and this year.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic in March last year, normal schooling has not taken place as the country went on hard lockdowns to curb the spread of the virus.

In June this year, schools were closed for the first term and government is yet to announce a date for their reopening for the second term, but preparations are underway.
Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe president Takavafira Zhou yesterday said it would be irresponsible for authorities to frog-march students into examinations given the disruptions they have experienced.
“The possibility of 2021 candidates writing examinations this year is minimal. With schools likely to open from mid-September 2021, examinations can only be written in early 2022 after three months of intensive learning,” he said.
“Such learning requires motivation for teachers. They must be given better salaries so that they work harder to protect the education system from going into dysfunctionality. Government should address the disparities between teachers and the rest of civil servants, where an underqualified ordinary government worker is earning more than a trained teacher,” Zhou said.
Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe president Obert Masaraure suggested that examinations be postponed to March next year.
“If our examinations are for genuine performance evaluation, they should be postponed until our learners have covered the syllabus. March 2022 will be ideal for examinations to cater for lost learning time. We should desist from the tick-the-box-mentality and focus on genuinely evaluating learner exit profiles,” Masaraure said.
Zimbabwe National Teachers’ Union chief executive Manuel Nyawo said: “Rural children have not had an opportunity to learn reasonably to prepare them for public examinations. Given that we are not also sure when this COVID-19 pandemic is going to end, with rumours that a fourth variant is imminent, it is only prudent that examinations be pushed to February next year to give learners ample time to learn and grasp concepts for their current grades and forms.”
Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association chief executive Sifiso Ndlovu also said postponement of examinations would be ideal.
“Apart from writing of the examinations, we are urging the government to consider postponing implementation of the continuous assessment learning areas (CALAs) programme so that learners and teachers intensively focus on completing the outstanding areas of the syllabi and be ready for the 2021 examinations. Implementation of the CALA programme is a hurried decision which disrupts proper learning in schools,” Ndlovu said.
Government seeks to implement the CALA programme which will see pupils doing projects and tasks in school. The marks for the projects will constitute 30% of their coursework for the final examination for each subject.
Primary and Secondary Education ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said government was yet to get recommendations from Zimsec on the way forward.
“Government is cognisant of the importance of public examinations, but as the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, we get recommendations from Zimsec on the way forward,” Ndoro said.-Newsday
By A Correspondent- A Kuwadzana man lost seven teeth after he was allegedly hit with a brick by his wife last Friday for saying “I miss you” to his female tenant.
The issue came out when Shylene Zariro (33) appeared before Harare magistrate Barbara Mateko on Saturday charged with domestic violence.
She was remanded in custody to today for bail application.
The complainant, Steward Mativenga (husband), who came to court heavily bandaged on the head and mouth, reported his wife to the police after he was struck with a brick.
Allegations are that on August 13 this year at around 19:30hrs, Mativenga arrived home from work and greeted his tenant only identified as Nyasha and told her that he missed her.
This did not go down well with Zariro, resulting in a heated verbal exchange.
Zariro then hit Mativenga with a brick twice on his mouth, knocking of seven teeth.
Mativenga was then referred to hospital for medical examination, and the accused was arrested.
By A Correspondent- Outgoing Zambian President Edgar Lungu has submitted himself to President-elect Hakainde Hichilema and pledged to work with him.
Lungu lost the last Thursday Presidential poll with a wide margin to Hichilema.
The defeated outgoing President had initially hinted at contesting the election results but later conceded defeat.
Monday morning Lungu said he met with HH and agreed to hand over power peacefully.

By A Correspondent- One of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s twin sons has been spotted driving an expensive Rolls Royce.
Pictures emerged on Sunday of Sean Mnangagwa – a soldier – apparently collecting the expensive vehicle from a bonded warehouse at the Boka Tobacco Auction Floors.
The US$360,000 car is believed to have been imported from South Africa. Including customs duty, the Rolls Royce Dawn would have cost in excess of US$500,000.
An associate of Sean on Sunday insisted that the vehicle was not his, claiming instead that its owner is the gold dealer Pedzai ‘Scott’ Sakupwanya. The person could not explain why Mnangagwa’s son went to collect the car.
Sean and his twin brother, Collins, have been linked to tender corruption involving the procurement of medical supplies, which led to the arrest and removal from the office of former health minister Obadiah Moyo.
The two sons of Mnangagwa and his current wife, Auxillia, are also running a cash-for-access syndicate wherein foreign investors and affluent locals pay them a fee for an audience with their father. Sean has no known business that he is running.
It has been claimed that he is part owner of Panjap Motors, which sells luxury cars in Harare and is fronted by one Fally Pupa, which the company denies.
Two police officers have been arrested for receiving a US$16 bribe.
Tinashe Mapamba and Masimba Kunyongana stationed at Glen Norah police station and Southerton, respectively, appeared before Harare magistrate Shaine Kubonera.
According to court papers, on August 12, Mapamba was off duty while Kunyongana was on suspension when they hatched a plan to extort money from citizens in the Matapi area, Mbare.
They reportedly started patrolling as police officers on duty, enforcing Covid-19 regulations.
The State also alleges that they approached Didymus Takudzwa Vhavha, who was operating his bottle store, before threatening to arrest him for violation of Covid-19 regulations.
Further allegations are that they demanded US$10 from him to free him, and he did as ordered.
It is also the State’s case that the two police officers also received US$6 from one Florence Chidaushe.
Matapi Police Intelligence Officers who were on surveillance received information that the duo was taking bribes leading to their arrest.
TWO people died while two others were seriously injured after being trampled by a stray elephant in Chitekete in Gokwe-North district. There is often a surge in human-wildlife conflicts during the dry season as wild animals invade settlements in search of food.
Parks and Wildlife Management Authority spokesperson Mr Tinashe Farawo confirmed the incident.
“I can confirm that two people died after being trampled by a lone elephant bull in Chitekete in Gokwe. Two others are lucky to be alive but sustained injuries from the incident,” said Mr Farawo.
He said the injured are being treated at a hospital in Zhombe. Mr Farawo said parks rangers were hunting down the problem animal.
“This elephant is now a danger to villagers and there is need to take it down. So, our rangers are now on the ground,” he said.
He said human wildlife conflict has been on the increase since the start of the year. Mr Farawo says they are anticipating an increase in more human-wildlife cases as the dry season approaches.
“We might sound like a scratched record when we say we have over population when it comes to our elephants. There is over population and therefore the surge in human elephant conflict,” he said.
Mr Farawo encouraged the villagers to inform rangers whenever they spot wildlife near human settlements.- Chronicle
By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa’ aborted a Mutare trip where he was expected to commission a medical oxygen and industrial gas plant at Feruka because of bad weather.
On Saturday, Mnangagwa was expected to commission the plant in the eastern border city but was advised against flying due to bad weather.
Sources said that Mnangagwa’s team was advised of bad weather by the Meteorological Services Department before flying to Mutare from Harare.
“I can confirm that President Emmerson Mnangagwa did not manage to travel to Mutare because of bad weather, the Meteorological Services Department advised his team that there was fog and it was raining. He was slated to travel in a helicopter, but helicopters normally do not fly when it is raining,” the source, who preferred anonymity, said.
The source said the commissioning ceremony had been postponed to Thursday.
Zanu PF Manicaland political commissar Gift Kagweda confirmed to NewsDay that Mnangagwa failed to fly to Mutare due to bad weather, but referred this reporter to the government for more details.
The project that Mnangagwa was supposed to visit is an oxygen plant constructed by Verify Engineering under the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education. The company built the plant which it operates in conjunction with the Harare Institute of Technology.

Late national hero and National University of Science and Technology (Nust) founding Vice Chancellor Professor Phineas Makhurane’s wife Lydia has died.
Mrs Makhurane died last Thursday at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) two days after President Mnangagwa posthumously conferred her late husband with Order of the Star of Zimbabwe Award on Heroes Day.
Her son, Mr Mookgetsi Makhurane confirmed his mother’s death yesterday.
“She had been suffering from dementia for quite a number of years and of late the condition had been complicated and had turned for the worst. She was taken for review on Wednesday, at a private clinic. She was treated and we took her back home. On Thursday afternoon, I received a call that I must rush home as she was not doing well. I got home and picked her up and we rushed to UBH, unbeknown to us she had already passed on,” said Mr Makhurane.
He said it was unfortunate that his mother died before he could explain to her about the award his father had received.
“I’m the one who had travelled to Harare to receive the award. Unfortunately, she was not aware of the award because her health condition at that point was such that she wasn’t cognisant of her husband having received an award. My point was to come and present the award to her and explain what had happened. We actually didn’t get the opportunity to do that unfortunately,” he said.
Mr Makhurane said his mother will be buried next to his father in Gungwe, Gwanda South, Matabeleland South on Friday.
He commended the Government for honouring his father for the contributions he made in the education sector.
“In my capacity as his son, and having had the opportunity to go and receive the award on his behalf, we indeed want to express our gratitude and thanks to the Government for recognising him even after his death. This is quite an honour to us as a family that he is still being recognised even posthumously. We want to extend our thanks and gratitude to the nation and Government,” said Mr Makhurane.
“She was the pillar of strength to the founding Vice-Chancellor and she passes away when the late Prof Makhurane had just been posthumously conferred the Order of the Star of Zimbabwe Award for his academic excellence and unshakable commitment to promoting the welfare of his fellow human beings, dedication to duty, and a degree of humanity that is both refreshing and inspiring in Zimbabwe’s journey towards Vision 2030,” read the Nust statement.

The date is 15 July 2023 just before the elections, and in no time at all, bang – on the screen quickly pops out Madam Boss, Passion Java, and Mai Titi. The computer displays a matrix of digits making up a straight 2,5 million people converted into voters. Every entry has phone number data and the batch has an ‘x’ placed into the voting column.
Database tables are drawn up, and the primary keys (core identification detail) are typed Emmerson Mnangagwa. The development is a build up from Tyra Chikoto, Madam Boss’s instructions to her Facebook fans to jot down their cellphone numbers.
Two weeks later elections are held and Nelson Chamisa participates. He works hard not knowing the ballot papers are going into one database that’s already been twisted.

By A Correspondent- The Zambian people are celebrating the defeat of Edgar Lungu, who has just sent a congratulatory message to the opposition leader and now President-elect Hakainde Hichilema who won last Thursday Presidential election.
Hichilema is set to become the southern African country’s 7th President.
With all but one of 156 constituencies counted, Hichilema had won 2 810 777 votes against Lungu’s 1 814 201, and the electoral commission declared him the next President.
Lungu (64) congratulated Hichilema in a televised address, marking Zambia’s third peaceful handover of power to an opposition party.
He has also indicated that he will comply with constitutional provisions to ensure the peaceful transition of power. Said Lungu:
I will comply with the constitutional provisions for a peaceful transition of power. I would therefore like to congratulate my brother, the president-elect, His Excellency Mr Hakainde Hichilema.
Power has switched from a ruling party to the opposition twice before, since independence from Britain in 1964.
The latest shift strengthens Zambia’s democratic credentials and sets an example on a continent with a patchy history of peaceful change.

Congratulations are indeed in order for the people of Zambia who have successfully managed to elect a new President despite all the political odds being heavily weighed against them.

I would also like to wish Hakainde Hichilema, who is affectionately known as HH, a very successful tenure as the next popularly elected President of the land of the mighty Zambezi River, to the north of our border.
The fact that a long-standing opposition leader such as HH, has successfully deposed an incumbent via the ballot process, is not just most welcome news for Zambia but also for the rest of Africa.
This is so, when one considers as to how rare it is for a ruling party to concede its leadership mantle after losing the popular vote. Most ruling parties in Africa actually find easier to simply rig the elections results and unilaterally continue to remain in power.
This has unfortunately adversely affected Africa’s democratic credentials since millions of its electorate have increasingly become disillusioned and have started to lose faith in capacity of the continent to respect the wishes of its electoral majorities.
As such, it is therefore hoped that the ascendancy of HH into power after an electoral victory, will certainly go a long way into restoring millions of Africans trust or belief in democracy or indeed elections as both a viable and sustainable means to effect political power transfer across the continent.
And nowhere will this point resonate most as in the country’s southern African neighbour of Zimbabwe.
Historically speaking, these two countries share a common colonial history. At one stage they were once bound together as the fabled Siamese twins; being known as Southern and Northern Rhodesia. Added to that, both countries once teamed up with Malawi to set up the ill-fated Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.
It is thus not a surprise that of all the countries across Africa, it is in Zimbabwe that the latest elections results will be the extensively discussed and analyzed especially in the contest of the country’s forthcoming harmonised elections that are due to be held in 2023.
There are various factors that could be used to help explain the impressive victory that the opposition has achieved in Zambia during this past week.
However, I tend to agree mostly with some political analysts who are already explaining that HH actually owes his electoral victory to the young people of Zambia.
You may recall that during 2016, he narrowly lost to the incumbent Edgar Chagwa Lungu (ECL), amid allegations of him rigging the results.
Yet now in 2021, HH has somehow successfully turned the tables against his erstwhile rival.
A closer comparative view at both the 2016 and 2021 elections results clearly show a massive increase of the voter turnout by over a million in terms of numbers.
Further, the results also clearly reveal that within a short period of 5 years, HH did not only manage to overtake ECL, but he also overwhelmingly defeated him by almost a massive million votes.
According to a pre-elections analysis that was recently done by Kennedy Gondwe from the BBC, elections in Zambia are largely influenced by young people, including first-time voters. More than half of the eight million registered voters are under the age of 35. In the past, along with urban dwellers, they have been the bedrock of the Patriotic Front (PF) support.
But amid the economic turmoil, Mr. Lungu and his party can no longer take their votes for granted. “I am not voting for anyone in this election – I am voting for my job. I can’t go four years without a job,” says Silvia Mutila, a 25-year-old unemployed nurse who graduated in 2017.
Nomsa Maseko, who is also part of the BBC News offices at Lusaka also wrote about the crucial role of the Zambian youths; there is certainly no doubt that those political winds of change were ushered in by young people who are often accused of being reluctant to vote. They turned up in high numbers and generally rejected President Edgar Lungu. “We want jobs, young people want jobs,” chanted throngs of people as they filled the streets of the capital shortly after Mr. Hichilema was declared the seventh president of this copper-rich nation.
Further, both the CNN and Reuters also claim in their news reports that the youths of Zambia played a crucial role in the electoral victory for the opposition by asserting that there was a huge turnout of mostly young people, some who came dressed in their academic robes to protest lack of employment post-graduation.
Joseph Kalimbwe, a youth representative of Hichilema’s UPND party told CNN. “Young people gave us the vote. Four million young people between the ages of 18 to 24 registered to vote. It was a huge turnout and it was very personal to them. They want to ensure the mistakes of their parents were corrected. They have voted for our leader on basis he has better policies and ideas and can strengthen our state institutions’’.
A similar view has been propounded by Jonathan Clayton who recently wrote a feature analysis in the Times of England newspaper. In his analysis, he also emphasized that it was the young people of Zambia who led the successful deposition of ECL from the State House.
As such, most of the credit for his landslide victory must be given to the young people of Zambia who took an active role in this year’s historic plebiscite. It really appears that it is indeed, the youths of Zambia who have decisively helped to redefine the political destiny of their country.
And so, for me, the most important lesson from the recent Zambian elections is that the youths of Zimbabwe must now rise up and take an active lead as we prepare for our own 2023 harmonised elections.
It is my considered view that if our young people finally stand up and get counted, we will certainly have Advocate Nelson Chamisa as our next President come 2023.
In this regard, I do have a very clear and unequivocal stance that the 2023 presidential elections will once again be a two-horse race. Forget about all the other pretenders, especially those aligned to the controversial POLAD, that has already proved beyond reasonably doubt to be a mere extension of the incumbent. Ultimately, the real contest will only be between Emmerson Mnangagwa (ED) and Nelson Chamisa.
I can dare say that all the other presidential candidates will be mere political tokens in order to placate the multi-party democratic interests of our country.
Personally, I am convinced that I have already proved myself as a role model to our current generation of young people.
My political journey officially started in July 1995 when l accepted my nomination as the next Secretary General of the University of Zimbabwe students’ union. I was very young back then since l had recently turned 20 years old.
It was also during my fourth month as a first-year student at the Faculty of Law. Yet, l did not hesitate to respond positively to this national call of political duty. Even though it meant that l would not necessarily prioritize my academic studies in favour of my responsibility as a students representative
At that very nascent stage of my political career, l was already capable of appreciating that when it came to building the nation, my personal interests immediately assumed secondary status. I was already clear and unequivocal in my personal stance that whatsoever l set out to do, l must always put my beautiful motherland of Zimbabwe.
I was only 5 years old when Zimbabwe celebrated its inaugural Independence Day in April 1980; but that memorable experience left a lifelong indelible mark in my entire being. Young as l was, l grew up in Zimbabwe in the 1980s with a full appreciation that for the colonial experience to end formally at the Lancaster House conference in December 1979, it had taken thousands of Zimbabweans to sacrifice their lives.
Indeed, for the nation of Zimbabwe to be born, it took many thousands of lives to die. A lot of Zimbabweans, most of them young, had to die both at home and in exile for the new nation to born on 18th April 1980.
It was in such an inspired political context that in July 1995, l fully made up my decision to context in the next Students Representative Council (SRC) elections. And as fate would have it, l was soon elected as the Secretary General of the 1995-96 SRC before l had even written my first major academic exams at the university.
Later on, l accepted my nomination to be the Acting President in April 1996 when l was barely 21 years old.
Then in October 1996 l further accepted my nomination to be the next President of the University of Zimbabwe students’ union. I eventually contested and lost the said elections. But still, I gracefully agreed to serve the students union as its Vice President under the presidency of the late Learnmore Jongwe.
In April 1998, l was once again nominated and then elected as the next President of the UZ students’ union. I was only 23 years old.
Added to that, since July 1996 l had also played a leading role in the process of reviving the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) in my capacity as the Acting President of the UZ students’ union. This process culminated in my election as the revived ZINASU Vice President in February 1997. Once again, l dutifully served my nation as a deputy to the late Learnmore Jongwe, who was elected as the President at the same Congress. I was only 22 years old.
But why am l writing about my early days or humble beginnings as a students leader?
My point is very simple.
We are never too young to start our lifelong journey of serving our beloved nation.
Our youths of Zimbabwe today must be challenged by the yesteryear generations that were led by the likes of the late Joshua Nkomo who responded positively to the call of national duty in their youthful days.
Our youths of Zimbabwe today must be inspired by the likes of Nelson Mandela who also took up the challenge of their generation to dismantle the racist apartheid regime.
Our youths of Zimbabwe today must learn from the class of 1976 in Soweto that played a catalytic role in the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa.
Our youths of Zimbabwe today must be challenged by the generation that was led by the famous students leader, President AGO Mutambara who in the late 1980s stood up and faced the challenge of their generation to fight the One-Party State agenda and also confront excessive corruption as evinced by the Willowgate Scandal.
Our youths of Zimbabwe today must learn from our own generation in the late 1990s which got actively involved in the key political events that helped to define the political destiny of our country.
Indeed, when the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) was launched in 1997, my generation and I were actively involved. I was actually one of the student leaders who used to attend its National Taskforce meetings that were chaired by the late President Morgan Tsvangirai.
Also, when the Movement for Democratic Change was launched in September 1999, my own generation as led by the late Learnmore Jongwe was also there in the thick of action.
Our youths of Zimbabwe today must also learn from the youths of Zambia who have in the past week helped to redefine the political direction of their country.
Our youths of Zimbabwe today must emulate those from Zambia by making sure that with immediate effect they step up their active involvement in the following three crucial political fights.
1. The Fight for National Awareness and Consciousness
It is very sad and disappointing to take note of the low level of political consciousness among the youths of Zimbabwe today. There is currently a disturbingly high level of political apathy among most of our young people. It seems as if most of them have by now already given up on their ability to influence the country’s future by playing an active role in matters of national importance.
Indeed, most youths seem to be more enchanted by the distractive penchants of socialites such as Madam Boss, Mai Titi, Sandra Ndebele, Pokello Nare, Kikky Badass, Njuzu, Mudiwa Hood, Passion Java, among others. But when it comes to issues of justice and democracy in the country, they suddenly disappear into thin air.
Right now, we currently have the topical case of Makomborero Haruzivishe. He is an outspoken youth who is under an unjustifiably prolonged incarceration and desperately needs some active solidarity from his fellow youths.
Please do not get me wrong, I am not against our youths having some fun; but it must not be at the expense of not just their own future but also for those who will come after them. Our country is currently facing a perennial never-ending political and socio-economic crisis that has no solution in sight.
Worse still, most of the strategic positions of all our three separate arms of State (Executive, Judiciary and Legislature) are clearly being led by geriatrics who have long passed the recommended age of retirement. Honestly, how on earth do our young people expect these old people to be emotionally interested in the long-term prospects of our nation?
Our youths must now wake up from their political slumber. They must take up the challenge of their own generation by actively participating in the national quest to find a lasting solution to the crisis in Zimbabwe. Enough is enough! Our young people must stand up and assume their rightful place in the national development agenda.
2. The Fight for National Inclusion
Zimbabwe is by far a very youthful country. Most of its adult population is currently between the ages of 18 and 40 years. There is no doubt that we have one of the youngest populations not just in Africa but also across the world.
Yet when it comes to inclusion in the key decision-making processes our youths are mostly conspicuous by their absence. We have a disappointing low number of youthful leaders in all key decision-making structures of our country. Our youths are currently officious by-standers in the process of all the key priorities of our nation.
Recently the national Constitution was amended under controversial circumstances but the youths did not actively stand up against this clear abuse of power by the geriatric political elite of this country. In particular, where was the youth outrage when Chief Justice Malaba successfully extended his term by another five years after reaching the original age of retirement?
Where are the youths when the current incumbent at State House openly boasts that he plans to remain in power till after 2030? Yet he will soon be turning 80 years old in 2022; about 20 years over the recommended age of retirement for the civil servants in the country?
A new quota system was also introduced for youthful representatives in the Parliament of Zimbabwe but it was a drop in the ocean. Youths should have actively campaigned for a much higher percentage allocation of seats in Parliament.
Also, with regards to the candidate selection process for the forthcoming elections, the youths are not clearly demanding for a much higher allocation of seats especially when compared to the disappointingly low levels of youthful candidates in the 2018 elections.
3. The Fight to Protect the Electoral Will of the Majorities
By all accounts it seems that the incumbent in Zambia actually tried to rig the elections. However, this time around the youths were more than ready for such political shenanigans. In some cases, they blocked some vehicles that were suspected to be carrying fake ballots meant to boost the poor numbers of the incumbent. They also opted to stay near the polling stations in large numbers and insisted that they were more than ready to react if any attempts were made to tamper the electoral process. Our youths of Zimbabwe normally retreat to their social media platforms. This time around, our youths must use social media platforms such as Twitter and WhatsApp to actively defend the democratic voice of our electorate.
In Zambia, it was said that a large turnout of voters made it impossible for any desperate attempts to rig the elections. Most of the turnout was largely consisting of youthful voters.
But for such a thing to happen in Zimbabwe during 2023, we must first start by witnessing a clear rise in the number of registered voters who are young people. This is more crucial with regards to first time voters. In Zambia, we had a massive increase of the 2021 voter turnout due to the concomitant increase of youthful voters who only got registered after the 2016 elections.
This situation must equally apply in Zimbabwe to enable the youths to play a very decisive role in 2023.
The MDC Alliance national Youth Assembly has already set the ball rolling by launching its own ‘One Million Votes’ campaign. The campaign is still yet to gain full momentum and find real traction with most young people across Zimbabwe. So, efforts need to be stepped up to ensure that the campaign becomes more effective or successful in terms of its impact.
We also need to see other youth led or student led organizations across all political spectrums also launching their own string campaigns to encourage young people not just to register as voters but to also actively participate in the crucial 2023 elections.
I have been in the ecumenical movement for almost two decades now. I got to know that ecumenism, is when Christians who belong to different Christian denominations work together to develop closer relationships among their members for the promotion of Christian unity. In an ecumenical platform, key decisions are made collectively and once in the public domain, no one member can be singled out as having been the sole decider over an issue. This is what happens in the Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations (ZHOCD). Reader, you may also want to note the existence of other ecumenical platforms beyond Zimbabwe, such as the Fellowship of Christian Councils in Southern Africa (FOCCISA); All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) and the World Council of Churches (WCC), in order to fully appreciate the work of ecumenical bodies.

This brief article is motivated a) indirectly by my obligation to educate the public about ecumenism in Zimbabwe b) directly by the need to respond to the words of one, Jamwanda, whose twitter account is purported to be run by a Senior Public Official, regarding the latest ZHOCD Statement on the partial reopening of Churches. While the statement was generally accepted by the public as objective and evidence-based, one, Jamwanda singled out Rev Dr Kenneth Mtata and unfairly attacked his person over the same statement. Yet, the statement in question is a collective product of ZHOCD not a single leader.
The views expressed here are purely mine and should not be linked to any institution associated with my name professionally, academically or socially. However, I need to indicate that if indeed, Jamwanda’s account is run by the purported Official, it is very unfortunate because I admired the Official so much as I was growing up because of his intellectual capacity. Today, I felt compelled to respond to some utterances channelled through this twitter account.
TheZHOCD
The ZHOCD is an ecumenical platform that brings together four mother bodies namely theZimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC), the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops’ Conference (ZCBC), the Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe (EFZ), and the Union of the Development of Apostolic Churches in Zimbabwe Africa (UDACIZA). Together, these Christian bodies represent more than 80% of the Zimbabwean population (ZHOCD Consensus Call Proposal, 2021). This makes it a major player in Zimbabwe’s public life. The platform has its origins in the Heads of Denominations (HoD), a loose coalition established in the early missionary periods when the various heads of denominations came together to coordinate their policy in engagement with the state and in sharing perspectives on how missionary work could be executed.
The current leadership of the ZHOCD makes decisions collectively and by consensus. The political leadership (the Bishops: Mangwiro, Khanye, Muparutsa and Ndlovu) and the General Secretaries offer policy guidance to the Church in Zimbabwe on critical national issues affecting the membership including public health.
The ZCBC is the current Chair of the ZHOCD through Arch Bishop Ndlovu, being deputised by the EFZ represented by Bishop Muparutsa while the ZCC is the Secretariat. The greatest strength of the platform is its geographical and numerical spread. The local structures of the ZHOCD are known by various names within the respective ecumenical bodies. These are local ecumenical fellowships, local peace committees, ecumenical environment champions, ecumenical health champions, ecumenical communicators and ecumenical researchers. These are dotted across the country, ready to inform any key ZHOCD national decision. The technical team of the platform offers the technical support to the local structures as they fulfill their daily tasks.
Ecumenical COVID-19Work
When the world was hit by the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, the Church quickly consulted its members through the ecumenical bodies for a thorough scenario mapping exercise. This informed how the Church would prepare its membership and the public at large in dealing with COVID-19. The Church went on to raise awareness in order to prevent the spread of the virus. The leadership of the Church has continued to encourage members to be fully vaccinated and remain compliant to all COVID-19 protocols. This was and is being extensively done through the Church structures and its networks including the media.
The Church further implemented its treatment care and support interventions through provision of pyscho social support to its members as well as materially supporting its mission hospitals with protective personal equipment. WASH and other humanitarian interventions were fulfilled. Meanwhile, the Church also assisted the public through analysing and simplifying the various key policy and legal instruments crafted and implemented by the Government. It further offered to give policy support through participation in official structures such as the COVID-19 Taskforces at local level. Above all, the Church coordinated its members across the country for effective and efficient response to the pandemic including turning Church premises into COVID-19 Isolation centres. This work has continued for almost a year and a half now. This background information is crucial for one to understand the latest ZHOCD statement on partial reopening of Churches.

On the 11th of August 2021, the Government announced that Churches could physically meet for worship on condition that only those fully vaccinated should be in attendance and that services are conducted with full compliance to the World Health Organisation regulations. The Church responded through a statement advising its members to comply. However, the communication was also meant to make some recommendations to the Government based on some clear theological and practical considerations made through consultation with the congregants. The Church communication was well received by stakeholders, including the Government, media, private actors and individuals.
However, Jamwanda decided to take a different route through his or “her” social media account. As cited in one of the online publications, Jamwanda responded to the statement through a direct and personal attack of one of the Clergymen within the ZHOCD ranks and files, Rev Mtata who is the General Secretary of the ZCC. Jamwanda equated Rev Mtata to the Biblical Pharisees who are known for their hypocrisy. He or “she” acknowledges that Rev Mtata was part of the first crop of Church leaders who positively received the vaccination exercise when it was adopted by Government. However, Jamwanda presents that move by Rev Mtata as “privatising salvation and long life” by the ZCC General Secretary. Without giving evidence, Jamwanda further accuses Rev Mtata as having political ambitions, of being selfish and having failed to provide leadership to the Church. Most damaging was the accusation that Rev Mtata advised his constituency not to respect the Government directive on partial reopening of Churches on condition of full vaccination. This is not true, and even Jamwanda himself or “herself” knows that! Kusvibisa munhu for nothing. But why?

For the record, after he had been vaccinated, Rev Mtata encouraged Church leaders to follow suit voluntarily. Indeed, the public will be reminded of Rev Mtata’s public utterances on his personal and even official ZCC twitter handles, encouraging the public (beyond the Church) to be vaccinated. He presided over a number of conferences and seminars where he raised awareness regarding the need to give vaccination exercise a chance. Moreover, after issuance of the latest ZHOCD statement, Rev Mtata went public on both print and electronic media to explain the Church’s communication. Even the Vice Chairperson of ZHOCD, Bishop Muparutsa appeared on our television during news time explaining the Church’s statement on 12 August. Records will certainly prove Jamwanda wrong on his or “her” accusation.
To single out Rev Mtata as the sole composer of the ZHOCD statement is tantamount to reducing the whole ecumenical platform to an individual. This can’t be! Some generous historians have provided evidence which shows that each time ZHOCD reacts positively to Government pronouncements, Jamwanda quickly comes in to spoil the party, particularly through targeting Rev Mtata’s person. The reason is not yet known though! What could be the background to this personal “hatred”?
CollectiveDecisions
Remember, in ZHOCD decisions are made collectively and by consensus. In any case, all ZHOCD statements are informed by consultative processes. On 12 August 2021, on behalf of the Church, I personally led the ZCC side of the ZHOCD platform in consolidating the feedback from the Local Ecumenical Fellowships, while my counterparts did the same in their constituencies. This is the data that subsequently informed the final ZHOCD statement, one which for me was well balanced and providing critical recommendations to Government. The statement acknowledged the need for the congregants to comply with the Government regulation but also raised concern that the Church should have been consulted by the authorities before publicly announcing the conditions for Church reopening. These are legitimate concerns that did not deserve Jamwanda’s negative comments targeted at an individual member of a whole platform.
Paragraph 3 of the ZHOCD statement says: “Theologically, the Church is an open and welcoming space for everyone with no restrictions. No one qualifies for Church service as it is a place of God’s grace. The Church will find it very difficult to turn people home because they do not have a vaccination certificate. However, would it be responsible to meet in an uncontrolled environment where possibilities of spreading the virus are high?”
Clearly, this is an objective point put across by the Church. This is supported by an equally objective point in paragraph 4 where practical challenges are raised. Of critical importance though, is the fact that the Church provided progressive recommendations in paragraphs 5.1 to 5.5 targeted at the Church and the Government. There is absolutely nothing in the statement where one advises congregants to disregard the Government directive. Thus, Jamwanda’s personal attacks at Rev Mtata were unfortunate, unsubstantiated and at most unfair.
Yet, I am particularly impressed by the level of accountability and transparency being exhibited by the current ZHOCD leadership. The General Secretaries, Rev Mtata, Pastor Blessing Makwara, Father Fredrick Chiromba and Rev Edison Tsvakai will go down in history as a team that has managed to nurture ecumenism in Zimbabwe. The team always consults its political and grassroots leadership on any decision that has to be made. Some of us have actually enjoyed working under the current ZHOCD leadership as we continue to promote the lightness and saltiness of the Church in Zimbabwe.
A Kuwadzana man lost seven teeth after he was allegedly hit with a brick by his wife last Friday for saying “I miss you” to his female tenant.

The issue came out when Shylene Zariro (33) appeared before Harare magistrate Barbara Mateko on Saturday charged with domestic violence. She was remanded in custody to today for bail application.
The complainant, Steward Mativenga (husband), who came to court heavily bandaged on the head and mouth, reported his wife to the police after he was struck with a brick.
Allegations are that on August 13 this year at around 19:30hrs, Mativenga arrived home from work and greeted his tenant only identified as Nyasha and told her that he missed her.
This did not go down well with Zariro, resulting in a heated verbal exchange. Zariro then hit Mativenga with a brick twice on his mouth, knocking of seven teeth.
Mativenga was then referred to hospital for medical examination, and the accused was arrested. -Newsday

DESTINATION Victoria Falls continues to gain the confidence of worldwide tourism, with the luxurious South African Blue Train making an emotional return almost five years after its last trip to the country’s resort town.
The train was briefly in Victoria Falls on Saturday on a familiarisation trip as its proprietors are reportedly planning to celebrate its 75th anniversary here on a date to be announced.
Although it came with no passengers on board, the Blue Train’s arrival evoked memories of the luxurious rail cruise the train offered between Cape Town and Victoria Falls. It stopped at the National Railways of Zimbabwe Victoria Falls station before going back to Cape Town.
Its arrival coincided with the monthly trip by another luxurious train, Rovos, which brought in 68 passengers and departed with 78 over the weekend, rubberstamping Victoria Falls’ status as a world class and preferred destination.
The Blue Train has been synonymous with luxury since 1946, after having been initially called the Union Limited or the Union Express.
People started calling it Blue Train because of the sapphire blue carriages it uses to carry tourists and it traces its history to the 1890s during the discovery of diamonds in South Africa. It was named the Blue Train in 1946 and celebrated 50 years in 1996.
While both the Blue Train and Rovos shuttle between Cape Town and Victoria Falls via Beitbridge, Rovos proceeds to Tanzania.
Both offer moving 5-star hotel service from South Africa, with the luxury rail cruise offering tourists an opportunity to view South Africa and Zimbabwe’s spectacular landscapes and visits to various attractions along the way.
Tourism executives said the Blue Train was in Victoria Falls on a market research to check on the destination ahead of the 75th anniversary to be held in Victoria Falls.
Employers Association for Tourism and Safari Operators national chair Mr Clement Mukwasi said the coming of the two trains rubber stamps Victoria Falls as a preferred destination, especially after the city achieved herd immunity with vaccination of about 60 percent of the population.
“The Blue Train was in Victoria Falls a few days ago but it didn’t come to deliver tourists. The coming of the Blue Train is actually a declaration of confidence in the green zone status of Victoria Falls. We haven’t gotten dates yet but they are preparing for their 75 anniversary here this year.
“Remember Victoria Falls reached herd immunity following launch of the vaccination programme here and that message has gone out and it has attracted huge markets to come through to Victoria Falls. We have always been an attraction but the fact that we now have herd immunity gives us an extra edge over all other competitors,” said Mr Mukwasi.
The journey between Cape Town and Victoria Falls takes a few days and different packages are offered along the way giving a top tourism adventure.
The trains will bring significant numbers of tourists who book into hotels and sample a number of activities including a tour of the Victoria Falls Bridge. It is the fifth time Rovos has come to Victoria Falls since March this year as it makes monthly trips.
Victoria Falls is the heart of the Okavango and Zambezi basin known as Kavango-Zambezi Trans-frontier Conservation Area (KAZA) and tourists who make a pilgrimage around the region would generally visit the Unesco World Heritage site, some using air, road and rail transport.
Hospitality Association of Zimbabwe Matabeleland North chair Mr Anald Musonza said Victoria Falls’ future looks bright as evidenced by confidence shown by service providers in returning to the destination.- Chronicle
ZANU PF Politburo member Ziyambi Ziyambi has warned those using the party’s name to conduct mines and company invasions across Mashonaland West to stop breaking the law and soiling the party’s image.
Speaking during the provincial coordinating committee meeting in Chinhoyi last Thursday, Cde Ziyambi warned party youths and affiliate groups attempting to grab lucrative gold mines using the party name.
“We don’t have a party policy that says we must go out there and grab mines. We must mind our language and desist from actions that soil the party name by saying AAG (Affirmative Action Group) has endorsed takeover of mines.
“Zanu PF affiliates wait for the party to make policy and give direction accordingly which affiliates then follow.
“I don’t want members claiming the Justice Minister was there when it was agreed that property rights must be violated,” said Cde Ziyambi who is also the Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister.
According to some party officials and WhatsApp group messages, Mashonaland West provincial youth chairperson Cde Vengai Musengi, and his team, are being accused of trying to grab gold mines from Zuvarabuda Empowerment Trust (ZET).
Cde Musengi has however rubbished the allegations including that of name-dropping the party’s national leadership in the alleged takeover of gold mines in the province.
But Cde Musengi is also allegedly being accused of wanting to grab claims at Pickstone Peerless Mine in Chegutu, Midwinter Mine (4 Stumper) Pickstone area and other mines.
On social media, Cde Ziyambi deplored the abuse of powerful tools of communication by members of the party to settle scores.
“We have become the worst province, with Zanu PF members taking their fights to social media. Insults were exchanged on social media, and up to this day members are still attacking one another,” he said.
Acting Zanu PF provincial chairman, Cde Abia Mujere also castigated the abuse of social media by party members adding that security teams from main, women, youths, and war veterans’ leagues will be monitoring party’s groups to weed out unruly behaviours.
Recently, Mashonaland West State Minister Mary Mliswa-Chikoka also warned against land and farm invasions tin parts of Zvimba, Makonde and Hurungwe districts.
She called on land seekers to follow the right procedure of applying for land through the district lands office. -Herald

One study uncovered ties between persistent loss of smell after recovering from COVID-19 and cognitive decline. The other found that people whose physical and respiratory health suffered due to a bout of COVID-19 were more likely to have issues with cognition afterward.
“I think what we’re learning is that it’s quite possible that these COVID-19 infections are potentially having an impact on the brain in some way,” says Rebecca Edelmayer, PhD, who is the senior director of scientific engagement for the Alzheimer’s Association in Chicago. Edelmayer was not affiliated with either study.
“There are still a lot of questions about the cause and effect, whether this is a direct or indirect effect [of COVID-19], but what we’re starting to see is data that suggests that people may be having some long-term impact from COVID-19 infection,” Edelmayer adds.
Persistent Loss of Smell Tied to Cognitive Impairment In one study, researchers assessed 233 people who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) and 64 healthy participants who tested negative. All participants in the study were age 60 or older. Those who tested positive were studied for three to six months after recovering from the virus.
The study participants underwent testing of their cognition and olfactory function — or function related to their sense of smell.

However, the researchers noted, the severity of olfactory dysfunction was not associated with how severe one’s bout of COVID-19 was.
“There is some suggestion that lack of smell could be a symptom of COVID-19 infection itself, but some people who experience COVID-19 without that symptom are having a persistent lack of smell afterward. So I think we have to learn more about what that symptom itself may imply in terms of the long-term impact of COVID-19 on the brain,” Edelmayer says.
COVID-19’s Lingering Effects on Lung Health (and What It Means for Cognition) In a small, Greek study, researchers tested physical and mental function beginning with 32 people two months after they’d been hospitalized and recovered from mild to moderate COVID-19.
According to the study’s lead author, George Vavougios, MD, PhD, who is a postdoctoral researcher for the University of Thessaly, the number of participants in this study has now grown to almost 100.
None of the participants had any prior coexisting health conditions other than hypertension, or high blood pressure.
Testing included the six-minute walk test, which measures how far someone can walk for six minutes, as well as their oxygen saturation — or levels of oxygen in their blood as they were completing the test. Other tests such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment measured whether participants had experienced cognitive decline after recovering from COVID-19.
Early findings from the study showed that more than half (56.2 percent) of participants had cognitive decline after recovering from COVID-19. Cognitive decline was found to be most common among people who demonstrated poor physical health and had concerningly low levels of oxygen in the blood during the six-minute walk test.
“For a healthy person, oxygen saturation would be at 99 percent whether we’re exercising or walking,” he explains. But for many people in the study, their oxygen saturation dropped to 95 percent, which, Dr. Vavougios says, resembles the lung function of someone with COPD (a group of lung conditions that inhibit airflow and cause breathing issues).
This finding could spell trouble for brain health, explains Vavougios. “A brain deprived of oxygen is not healthy, and persistent deprivation may very well contribute to cognitive difficulties,” he said in a press release.

By A Correspondent- One of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s twin sons has been spotted driving an expensive Rolls Royce.
Pictures emerged on Sunday of Sean Mnangagwa – a soldier – apparently collecting the expensive vehicle from a bonded warehouse at the Boka Tobacco Auction Floors.
The US$360,000 car is believed to have been imported from South Africa. Including customs duty, the Rolls Royce Dawn would have cost in excess of US$500,000.
An associate of Sean on Sunday insisted that the vehicle was not his, claiming instead that its owner is the gold dealer Pedzai ‘Scott’ Sakupwanya. The person could not explain why Mnangagwa’s son went to collect the car.
Sean and his twin brother, Collins, have been linked to tender corruption involving the procurement of medical supplies, which led to the arrest and removal from the office of former health minister Obadiah Moyo.
The two sons of Mnangagwa and his current wife, Auxillia, are also running a cash-for-access syndicate wherein foreign investors and affluent locals pay them a fee for an audience with their father. Sean has no known business that he is running.
It has been claimed that he is part owner of Panjap Motors, which sells luxury cars in Harare and is fronted by one Fally Pupa, which the company denies.

Lungu lost the last Thursday Presidential poll with a wide margin to Hichilema.
The defeated outgoing President had initially hinted at contesting the election results but later conceded defeat.
Monday morning Lungu said he met with HH and agreed to hand over power peacefully.

By A Correspondent- A Zimbabwe National Army member, Raymond Negomo Dzapasi (34), has been arrested for armed robbery.
Dzapasi of B1 Mechanised Battalion, Inkomo Barracks, appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi on Saturday facing robbery charges.
He was remanded in custody on August 25 and was advised to approach the High Court for bail.
Two of his accomplices, Edmore Makarimai and Pheneas Mukandidzi had already appeared before the courts to answer to a robbery charge under case number CRB HREP 7127/21, while two more, Bright Munduka and another only identified as Hwenjere are still at large.
They are accused of masterminding an armed robbery in Harare where they went away with property worth US$2 050.
Property worth US$330 was recovered.
The soldier was implicated by his accomplices, who were arrested while in possession of some of the stolen property.

Nyasha Mushekwi has extended his lead in the Chinese League One golden boot race after netting his first hattrick of the 2021 season on Sunday.
The Zimbabwean striker hit the target thrice in Zhejiang Greentown’s 3-0 win over Beijing BIT. He got his first goal in the 40th minute before doubling the lead two minutes into the second half.
The 33-year old rounded it up in the 66th minute to seal the victory.

By A Correspondent- The Passenger Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) has expressed it’s concerns over the continuous clash between none registered kombis and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) .
The association said this poses danger to passengers amid revelations the law enforcement agents at times engage in a hot pursuit with the kombis which are carrying commuters.
PAZ Coordinator Tafadzwa Goliati yesterday said these clashes were a risk to passengers and would lead to death of innocent people.
“Whenever we visit our local ranks, we are observing clashes between the Police and kombi drivers who refuse to join the Zimbabwe United Passengers Company (Zupco) franchise. As passengers we are not pleased with such behaviour, ” said Goliati.
“We are now scared to get in the ranks. They are always chasing each other and kombis would be speeding which is a risk to passengers and pedestrians. This can cause the death of many people and we are worried.”
Goliati said as passengers they have the freedom to choose any mode and type of transport they want.
“As passengers we choose our own transport we want. We use transport that is time cautious and readily available. We do not wait for transport that is not there,” said Goliati.
“We want to be home before curfew so we choose transport that is fast and readily available. With the ongoing load shedding we want transport that is fast and reliable so as to reduce the problems of mugging and robbery which passengers are witnessing.”
Goliati said the transport problem has to be addressed.
Recently the police warned of serious action against private commuter omnibus operators who continue to pirate against a government directive to stop.
By A Correspondent- A 29 year old Zimbabwean man who attacked and repeatedly rap_ed for three hours a Swaneng Hill schoolgirl in Serowe, Botswana, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Godfrey Moyo was 24 when he pounced on his unsuspecting victim at around 6am in March 2016.
The girl, then an 18-year-old Form Four student, was walking to Serowe Sports Complex to attend sports even when she realised Moyo was a man following her.
“I ignored him thinking it was just a passerby. But then I felt him holding my hand and he dragged me to a nearby bush against my will. I tried to scream for help but the person choked and slapped me,” she told the court in Francistown.
She added Moyo then took off his belt and threatened to hang her if she screamed before ordering her to undress and proceeded to se_xually assault her, choking her every time she tried to call for help.
Thinking her torment was coming to an end, Moyo dragged the girl deeper into the bush, where he had left some of his belongings. He removed a cond0m from his bag, and told her to take off her clothes again, and rap_ed her again.
The girl told the court she was later able to recognise Moyo after having ‘spent about three hours with him’ during the ordeal.
“He had short dreadlocks and two scars on his face,” she told the police when identifying Moyo as her attacker four months later. His DNA was also found in a cond0m recovered at the crime scene.
However, Moyo maintained his innocence throughout the trial, pleading for mercy, and telling the court he has a five-year-old daughter that depended on him.
Passing sentence last Wednesday, Judge Matlhogonolo Phuthego noted that cases of rap_e and gender-based violence were on the rise in Botswana, and it was the court’s responsibility to hand out stern punishments to offenders and deter would-be offenders.
“I, therefore, sentence the accused person to 12 years imprisonment backdated to the period spent in prison,” closed Phuthego.
Moyo, with his dreads, long since shaved, left for prison with his head bowed, walking slowly due to his shackles.

By A Correspondent| Government has awarded the reconstruction of Seke Road to Bitumen World under the Emergency Road Repair Programme phase 2.
The reconstruction will start on Wednesday 18 August 2021.
In a statement, Bitumen World said during the reconstruction of the road will result in re-routing of traffic as well as having some portions operating with a single lane.
By A Correspondent- A soldier Raymond Negomo Dzapasi (34), has been arrested and arraigned before the courts facing an armed robbery charge.
Dzapasi of B1 Mechanised Battalion, Inkomo Barracks, on Saturday appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi who remanded him in custody to August 25.
He was advised to approach the High Court for bail.
Two of his accomplices, Edmore Makarimai and Pheneas Mukandidzi had already appeared before the courts to answer to a robbery charge under case number CRB HREP 7127/21, while two more, Bright Munduka and another only identified as Hwenjere are still at large.
They are accused of masterminding an armed robbery in Harare where they went away with property worth US$2 050. Property worth US$330 was recovered.
The soldier was implicated by his accomplices, who were arrested while in possession of some of the stolen property.
Meanwhile, two other suspected armed robbers Tichaona Dera (28) and Benard Simbarashe Kurira (41) also appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi on Saturday charged with armed robbery.
On July 1 this year, they allegedly stole a handbag containing US$560 from a house in Mandara, Harare.
They allegedly manhandled the complainant and his wife and demanded US$16 000 before stealing clothes and cellphones, which they loaded into the complainant’s Honda Fit vehicle and drove off.
The vehicle was later recovered in Sunningdale 2, Harare.
On August 12, detectives received information that Brighton Masamvi was using one of the stolen cellphones. A follow up was made leading to Masamvi’s arrest. Masamvi then implicated Dera and Kurira.-Newsday
Independent Norton legislator Temba Mliswa has warned President Emmerson Mnangagwa against abusing power saying the just ended Zambian elections should serve as a lesson that nothing is impossible.
In a long Twitter thread, Mliswa accused Mnangagwa of surrounding himself with corrupt people who cannot sacrifice for him but are only closer to him to loot.
The firebrand former Zanu PF Mashonaland west chairperson said the ruling party is allowing violent people to occupy influential positions.

Now we hear of a US$3.5 billion pipeline, for what when the one we already have isn’t even used that much. Why do that when we have derelict hospitals and infrastructure. Why would we do that? And you think people are quiet and not seeing that?
There is the arresting of people willy-nilly and selective application of the law. However, destroying the leaders does not destroy the electorate, the people who vote for them.
I can state today that the leadership of ZANU PF and its people think differently. There is a disconnection. The internal processes of ZANU PF are non-existent. There is no internal democracy.
I have already pronounced before that the DCC process would destroy the party. Come 2023 expect a number of independent Councillors and MPs because political parties have abused Section 129(1)K recalling members even over personal differences.
They are bigger issues. Zambians have held elections in the midst of Covid yet we have stopped ours whilst we have ZUPCOs moving around full. So how can people be fully represented?
The unstated implication is a fear that by-elections will show how some are not needed come 2023. We are on the ground& know what is happening. The President surrounded by a lot of criminals, people who cannot sacrifice themselves but are just there to loot.
They are not helping him at all. They have fanned the politics of hatred. We saw it with the persecution of Joyce Mujuru. She never called for a meeting to be voted for. It was the people who wanted that at Congress& they were turned down. This resulted in persecutions.
That has destroyed ZANU PF. You must ask why the President got 50.08% in the election yet the rest of the party had two thirds. That has never happened before. It was a response from the people over issues which are there.
In Hurungwe the party had violent campaigns involving Ziyambi, people like Chinjai, Masenda, Vengi Musengi. People were beaten. That is why I cannot be part of a system that believes beating up people is the best way to win elections.
These are God’s people, any spilled blood and God will respond in his own way.
By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Republic Police has since launched a manhunt for Rangisai Ndlovu after he vanished immediately after stabbing his uncle on the chest with a kitchen knife at the height of the argument.
According to the police report, on 9 August around 8:30 pm, the now-deceased Melinkosi, Rangisai, and two others-Bonwell Ndlovu and Ben Sibanda had an argument over the genuineness of a traditional healer who resides in Zozo village.
The heated argument spiraled out of control after the now-deceased allegedly picked a stick and hit his nephew twice.
Ndlovu and Sibanda tried to restrain the two but their efforts were all in vain as Rangisai retaliated by drawing a knife and stabbing his uncle on the chest.
After he was stabbed, Melinkosi collapsed on his back and died on the spot.
Upon realizing what he had done Rangisai fled from the scene.
Grace Nkomo, the now deceased’s wife, reported the matter to the police. Upon arrival, the police cleared the body and took it to Nkayi District Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem.
Rangisai’s whereabouts are currently not known. However, before he fled he informed his brother that he wanted to commit suicide as his conscience was eating him for killing his uncle.
By A Correspondent- A money-making ritual went wrong for a Zimre Park man after he lost US$14 000 to a bogus Ugandan sangoma.
Jaison Mandivengerei (49) lost a lump sum of money after he engaged Sikayuba Abdu (44) to multiply his money.
Abdu was arrested and charged with fraud when he appeared before Masvingo Magistrate Patience Madondo on Friday.
He was remanded to August 26, 2021.
Allegations are that on July 1, 2021, Mandivengerei contacted Abdu for spiritual assistance after he came across a pamphlet inscribed “SEKURU JAMIL ZEN International Registered Healer or Herbalist”.
Mandivengerei agreed to meet Abdu at his office near Landmark Bar in Masvingo CBD.
During consultation, Abdu informed Mandivengerei that his money was being stolen by evil spirits and assured him that he could help him recover the millions he had lost.
The court heard that on July 4, Abdu contacted Mandivengerei and told him that he wanted to do a spiritual healing process which needed US$11 000.
Believing the sangoma was going to help him recover his money, Mandivengerei went with US$11k to Abdu. Abdu took the money and allegedly put it in a red cash box and handed it over to Mandivengerei after instructing him not to open the box.
On the same day, at around 10 pm, Abdu called Mandivengerei and asked him to return the cash box since he had completed the first stage of the ritual.
As instructed, on July 5, Mandivengerei went to Abdul’s office and handed back the red cash box.
While there, Abdul told Mandivengerei that in order for him to complete the cleansing process he had to face the western direction while he faced eastern direction.
While Mandivengerei was facing west, Abdul allegedly swapped red boxes and gave Mandivengerei a different box which he instructed him not to open for seven days.
It is further alleged that on July 6, Abdul told Mandiverengerei to deposit R50 000 into his South African CAPITEC Bank account for ancestors to do the final cleansing at the Limpopo River.
After he got the money, the accused asked the complainant to meet him at his Landmark office the following day but he was nowhere to be found.
Efforts to contact him on his mobile phone were all fruitless as Abdul allegedly switched off his mobile and blocked Mandivengerei on WhatsApp.
Seeing that Abdul was nowhere to be seen, Mandivengerei allegedly forced open the red box, and to his shock, he only discovered RTGS$2 000 inside.
The Mirror reports that Mandiverengei filed a police report leading to Abdul’s arrest last Wednesday in Chinhoyi town where he had opened a new office.
Nothing was recovered as Abdu allegedly bought a BMW and opened an office in Chinhoyi using the proceeds.
AT 47, Norest Kubaya (not her real name, she requested to use another name because her husband did not grant her permission to speak), who was married at the age of 12, has lost 10 children out of 14 births.
Kubaya says many other girl brides had suffered the same sad fate, such that in her Johane Marange apostolic sect community, it is not something out of the ordinary.
She believes her children died at a tender age because they did not get adequate healthcare as infants, although she was lucky to survive unlike many other child brides.
Kubaya shared her story following the death of 14-year-old Memory Machaya during labour in Marange on 15 July 2021.
“I was in Grade Five when I eloped for my marriage. I must admit that its actually me who wanted to get married. My father was against it. He feared for my well-being since I was still too young to be married. Being a child, I was lured into the marriage by the prospects of a better life. My father wept when he heard I was preg_nant the following year,” Kubaya said.
She eloped in 1987, becoming the seventh bride. Her husband married four other minor wives after her.
“The government was not as strict on child marriages soon after Independence. It was not such a big issue then, as it is now, so no one saw a problem with it,” Kubaya said.
Her husband sired 64 children from his 11 wives. Kubaya said losing her children was traumatic. She revealed how after the death of every child she would go back to her family for emotional support.
“After a child’s death, you go back to your parents for a few months as part of consoling. When I returned to him, it was my duty to conceive as part of replacing the deceased child. This is how I lost several of my children,” she explained in a deep and sorrowful voice.
She said the majority of women from the apostolic sect give birth at different shrines across the country.
“There are trained midwives at the shrine but, personally, I was attended to by my mother, who is also a midwife. Several young women have died while giving birth because of complications that needed operations and may lose a lot of blood. The scenarios differ,” she added.
“There will never be official statistics on how many young women have passed on during birth at the shrines. Burials are done secretly by few family members. The doctrine is that we must not reveal much to outsiders. I lost 10 of my children at different ages, the oldest being seven years. It was due to different illness, but I never went to hospital to get medication for them. We accepted that it was natural for them to die. Even some of the newly married still believe this,” she revealed.
Kubaya said although women are not allowed to speak to the media, the death of Machaya “is so heartrending” that it must not be swept under the carpet.
“Women are gagged from speaking to the media. The world must know and understand the challenges faced by young girls married in our church,” she added.
Entangled into marriages
She said many young girls are lured into marriages by some uncaring and selfish men.
With the benefit of hindsight, she now sees why her father was against her getting married early.
“I regret how I ended up in this polygamous affair when I was still young to start off a family. There is no limit to how many wives a man could marry. The marriage is not rosy. Majority of these young girls are blindfolded by lustful men taking advantage of the minors,” she said.
“If the truth was ever to be told, men in our sect deceive young girls. They lure them into marriage by providing some goodies. Majority of these young girls, if they were given choices, they could never get married early. Church members accept the abnormal as normal. Many parents are against the early marriages and I am one of the elder women who teach the young girls against early marriages, but the young girls don’t listen. Whenever they get goodies, including biscuits, zapnaks (snacks) among others, they can easily be married at a tender age,” she said.
Kubaya said some girls who managed to further their education snubbed early marriages.
“Few of those girls who have been to school know and understand their rights and cannot be taken advantage of by men,’’ she revealed.
Defying Taguta
She however revealed that most of the men are defying Noah Taguta, the sect leader, who is against early marriage.
“Some Johanne Marange sect men are worst culprits on child marriages as our leader Noah Taguta has on several occasions warned that he will never defend anyone who abuses young girls.
He even said anyone arrested over child marriage must face the wrath of the law and be jailed.
He has said he will expel and excommunicate those who are arrested for abusing the girl child through forced marriage.
Some men are criminals who must be arrested for abusing the young girls. It is against the church doctrine and culprits must not take advantage when government respect our leader,” she added.
Shamwari YeMwanasikana, a girl child empowerment organisation in Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East and Manicaland provinces, has been pushing for community-based campaigns to end child marriage through public engagement.
“We have also been engaging religious and traditional leaders to curb child marriages. We also engage men and boys through forums that play a pivotal role in ensuring women and children’s rights are upheld in society,” explained Louis Tatswareyi, the communications coordinator.
The African Union’s goodwill ambassador to end child marriage, Nyaradzai Gumbodzvanda, said the late Machaya’s death is an important issue in looking at girl child’s rights.
“This sad news is the most important frontier for the whole country in rooting out the practice as a cultural or religious norm that forced the majority of underage girls falling prey to early marriages,” Gumbodzvanda said.
The United Nations in Zimbabwe condemned the sexual violation of young girls following Machaya’s death.
“UN in Zimbabwe notes with deep concern and condemns strongly the surrounding circumstances leading to the untimely death of 14-year-old Memory Machaya. Sadly, disturbing reports of the sexual violation of under-age girls, including early forced child marriages, continue to surface and indeed this is another sad case,” the UN said in a statement.
In Zimbabwe, one out of three girls will be married before the age of 18.
“The current trend of unresolved cases of violence against women and girls in Zimbabwe, including marriages of minors cannot continue with impunity. All forms of violence and early forced marriages severely affect the mental and physical health of girls and are a violation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child which Zimbabwe is a signatory,” the UN statement read.

Hichilema was declared winner of the Zambian presidential elections after out-polling the incumbent Edgar Chagwa Lungu with 2,810,777 votes against ruling party candidate’s 1,814,201, with all but one of the 156 constituencies counted.
“We will be addressing the Nation today, 16th of August, 2021 from our residence in New Kasama. The address will start at 12:00 hours. All media houses are cordially invited. Your continued support is highly appreciated. Thank you,” said Hichilema on his Twitter account.
By A Correspondent- Police have arrested two daring thieves who broke into their canteen at Drill Hall in Bulawayo and stole cash and groceries, including 18kg of meat.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Abednico Ncube yesterday confirmed the arrest of Leroy Musiiwa (21) from Emakhandeni and Collen Charlie (23) of Makokoba for unlawful entry and theft.
He said they stole property and cash valued at US$230, R750 and $12 000.
The thieves broke a window at night on August 12 to gain entry into the canteen.
The theft was discovered the following day and investigations led to the arrest of the pair at their places of residence.
Government yesterday began hunting for $1,5 billion to finance its operations, with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) approaching the market to invest in a two-year treasury bond.
In a statement, the RBZ said the bond, which attracts an 18% annual interest rate, would close this week.
The RBZ set a $1 million benchmark for investors.
“The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe hereby invites investors, including but not limited to pension and provident funds, insurance companies, mutual funds and other interested institutions as well as individuals in Zimbabwe, to subscribe for the…bond.
“The purpose of this loan is to assist in financing of Government of Zimbabwe programmes.
“Interest is payable at the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe half yearly…until maturity of the bond through the nominated custodian banks,” the central bank said.
The bond has been given a prescribed and liquid asset status, it is tradable and it is accepted as collateral.
The government and parastatals have recently been on the market to raised funds to finance several programmes this year.
Last month the Agricultural Marketing Authority (AMA) issued its $5 billion bill to fund grain purchases for the Grain Marketing Board (GMB).
Financial services giant, CBZ Holdings Limited, which handled the transaction said the offer of AMA bills would attract a 19% interest rate with a 270day tenor.
CBZ also said only applications with a minimum of $1 million would be eligible to participate.
The banking group said the bills will have a prescribed and liquid asset status, in addition to tax exemption.
“The Agricultural Marketing Authority (AMA) intends to issue AMA bills of up to $5 000 000 000 to finance the purchase of maize for the 2021 buying season through the Grain Marketing Board,” CBZ said in the offer.

By A Correspondent- President Mnangagwa leaves for the Malawian capital, Lilongwe, today for the 41st Ordinary Summit of Sadc Heads of State and Government, which runs from tomorrow to Wednesday under the theme “Bolstering Productive Capacities in the Face of Covid-19 Pandemic for Inclusive, Sustainable, Economic and Industrial Transformation”.
The summit will “take stock of progress made in promoting and deepening regional integration”.
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Dr Frederick Shava is already in Malawi for preparatory meetings that precede the Summit.
President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi will take over as chairperson of the bloc from Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, while a new Executive Secretary to head the Sadc Secretariat in Botswana will be elected after the expiry of the tenure of incumbent Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax.
Dr Tax, the first woman to hold the post, has served the maximum of two four-year terms and under the term limits set by Sadc, cannot be reappointed.
In a recent statement, Sadc said there would be a limited number of delegates at the summit and the ministerial meeting held before the heads of State gather in order to observe Covid-19 protocols.
“The summit will take stock of progress made in promoting and deepening regional integration in line with Sadc’s aspirations as espoused in the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan 2020–2030 and Vision 2050, which envisage a peaceful, inclusive, competitive, middle-to high-income industrialised region where all citizens enjoy sustainable economic well-being, justice and freedom.”
A series of meetings leading up to the summit have already been held or are planned, with the Sadc Organ Troika Summit expected today.
The Organ Troika, formally known as the Organ on Politics, Security and Defence Cooperation, is mandated to secure and guarantee peace in the region.
It will likely be seized by developments in the DRC, eSwatini, Lesotho and Mozambique. Already regional countries have decided to intervene in Mozambique to deal with an insurgency in Cabo Delgado province that has so far killed 2 500 people and displaced more than 800 000.
On June 23, the 16-member regional bloc, acting on recommendations from a technical team that had been deployed in Mozambique, agreed to deploy its Standby Force under the framework of Sadc Mutual Defence. The technical team recommended sending 3 000 troops with land, air and naval capabilities.
On August 9, the Sadc Mission in Mozambique formally joined the campaign. The force includes troops from South Africa (1 495), Botswana (300), Lesotho (125) and Angola (20). Zimbabwe is contributing 304 specialist military instructors to boost the Mozambican military’s capacity.
Last week, Defence and War Veterans Affairs Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri said Zimbabwe is waiting for instructions from the Sadc Secretariat.
“Zimbabwe has pledged to deploy a training contingent of 304 ZDF (Zimbabwe Defence Forces) members to that mission.
“However, we await deployment instructions from Sadc Secretariat. Some countries have already deployed in that country and sooner than later, the insurgency will be contained.”
For the critical post of Executive Secretary member States will have to choose between two high-calibre candidates: DRC’s Professor Faustin Luanga Mukela, who is a senior official at the World Trade Organisation, and Mr Elias Magosi, the current head of the Botswana Public Service.
A special envoy from DRC President Felix Tshisekedi, Mr Didier Makanzu (DRC’s Regional Integration Minister), recently met President Mnangagwa at State House in Harare on July 21 to canvass for support.
“The tradition is that when both posts are vacant (the Executive Secretary and Deputy Executive Secretary posts) the deputy’s post automatically goes to the host country, which is Botswana, but Botswana also wants to have the top post, so the DRC came to seek Zimbabwe’s support because our country is the only one that can present a candidate for the top post,” he said after the meeting.
However, Zimbabwe indicated it would make a decision after consultations.
Whoever the leaders decide is the best person to fill the post will have the onerous task of spearheading the region’s industrialisation strategy, which is premised on industrialisation, competitiveness and regional integration.
Current data indicates that a lot needs to be done, as the share of the manufacturing sector to overall GDP in the region is still low, at around 12 percent.
Sadc believes that in order to realise the targeted long-term development objectives, member states will have to address the slow progress in ratifying the Protocol on Industry, including delays in the operationalisation of the Sadc Regional Development Fund in order to facilitate mobilisation of meaningful resources to support regional value chains, mineral beneficiation and other industrial projects in the region that require large-scale investments.
There is also a push to improve policy environment for industrial development and value addition to facilitate increased industrial investments at member state level.

Ben Bright claims that Pastor Adeeyo, the General Overseer of the World Bank Assembly in Eneka, Obio/ Akpor LGA Rivers State, stole his wife of 12 years and went on to have a lavish wedding.
Bright only unearthed this scandalous relationship after he found wedding photos of his wife, Tina Bright, and pastor, Moses Adeeyo on their wedding after she ran off with their two kids.
Bright revealed that he had been married to his wife in a traditional and white wedding for 12 years before Pastor Adeeyo snatched her.

MDC Alliance Secretary for International Relations, Gladys Hlatywayo said her party takes lessons from the Zambian polls in terms of orderly organization, high voter turnout and respecting the will of the people.
By A Correspondent- A driver lost US$15 000 in the Bulawayo CBD after he had parked his car while attending to a mechanical fault.
The police said the incident occurred on 12 August at around 3PM at Cnr 2nd Avenue and Robert Mugabe Way.
“The ZRP is investigating a case of theft from a motor vehicle which occurred in Bulawayo on 12 August at around 3PM in which an unknown suspect stole US$15 691 cash from the complainant’s Nissan Atlas vehicle.
“The vehicle had been parked at Corner 2nd Avenue and Robert Mugabe Way, as the complainant tried to fix a mechanical problem,” said the police.
In another incident which occurred on August 11 police in Bulawayo recovered a white Toyota Hilux, dumped at plot number 16 Fairview, along Plumtree Rd. The vehicle is reported to have been stolen from South Africa. Police said investigations were underway.

Due to looting blamed on ZANU PF, Zimbabwe’s roads and schools are in a worse state than when the late Prime Minister left it in 1979.
Mangwana spend the night riding on the video not knowing that he is spreading a piece of literature that disses his party.
Adhala WeGonyeti contacted ZimEye Sunday night to laugh at how ZANU PF activists were propagating his explosive video, not knowing they are shooting themselves in the groin.
Mangwana was not available at the time of writing to comment.
By A Correspondent- A homeless 30-year-old man who sleeps on a tombstone has revealed that he asks the stranger whose grave he uses as a bed to forgive and watch over him as he spends the night there.
Linda Sokhela who has been homeless for the past five years says he used to sleep under bridges for some time until he, together with some friends, found a comfortable spot on a tombstone in Langlaagte Cemetery.
“I don’t know who’s buried there but when I go to sleep, I consult with them. I ask them to look after me and forgive me for sleeping on them.”
However, Sangoma Jabulani Mthimunye said graves should be respected arguing that when someone is dead, their soul still lives and if they are not happy with what is happening on their grave bad things might happen to those who would have tempered with it.
In other news, iHarare reported that a notorious gold baron who was jailed for murder has expressed concern over the welfare of the 14 children he left behind.
47-year-old Baron Dube said that his children have no one to look after them since he never took a wife. The oldest of his 14 children is only 12-years-old.
The ironically named gold baron was notorious for violence in the Esigodini area.
Last year, Dube was sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing a member of a rival gang. Dube shot Prince Antony Bvundura (22) in September 2018.

Why is a crime to want funding for public health and schools? Why is it a crime to demand jobs or modern infrastructure? Why is it a crime to seek accountability for the money that we pay in taxes? Why is it a crime to protest against hunger? Why are the police who are meant to protect and secure the lives of citizens mimicking the behaviour of the Special Branch by breaking into the homes of journalists who speak out against corruption? Why do those who are innocent get treated like criminals yet criminals go Scot free?
Imagine if all the young people who are arrested on spurious charges of subversion were included in the economy and spending all those wasted court hours contributing towards the economy through innovation and productivity? Imagine if all the lawyers who waste time arguing bail applications for the pro-democracy activists that are continuously arrested on bogus charges spent their time working on mergers and acquisitions that would grow and develop the economy? Imagine if the property rights framework of the nation enabled more of that to happen? Imagine if people were so inspired by the national vision that they were not planning endless strikes and protests but they were knuckling down to work and they were rewarded in a meaningful currency for their hard work?
The people deserve better and more. We are sick and tired of being sick and tired. There is a generation that is ready to pick up the broken pieces and re-write the contract that you repeatedly breach through violations of the Constitution and fundamental freedoms. People deserve hope. People deserve an ecosystem that allows them to work hard and reap the rewards of their hard work. People deserve to be free and secure in their homes. People deserve a government that they can trust. We will never stop believing in the beauty of this nation regardless of the madness. But the madness must stop.
When people unite and find their collective voice to fight injustice, a nation is reborn.
By A Correspondent- MDC-T top official, Tapiwa Mashakada has retracted his pro-Zambian President Edgar Lungu election results and said that the incumbent should hand over power to his contender if he loses the election.
United Party for National Development (UPND) candidate Hakainde Hichilema (HH) was last night elected President.
HH is a close Nelson Chamisa ally.
Mashakada, a top Mwonzora official, posted on his Twitter handle on Thursday, saying that Lungu would humiliate HH in the elections.
In an interview with ZimEye.com last evening, Mashakada made a U-turn and said, ” predictions can be proven wrong and as in this case and I would not make any fuss about it”.
Mashakada apologetically said they would honour HH, who had previously declared that he supports Nelson Chamisa and his MDC Alliance.
” His (HH) foreign policy is entirely up to him. Every head of state has got their foreign policy and stance, which we must respect, and it is up to the Zambian interest to pursue whatever relationship they want. It’s up to them, and it’s up to their national interests”, said Mashakada.

By A Correspondent- MDC Alliance President Nelson Chamisa’s legal advisor, Thabani Mpofu, has hinted at how Zanu PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa would fall in 2023.
Mpofu, who exposed Zanu PF election rigging in the last election when he dragged Zanu PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration to the constitutional court, said this time Chamisa would stop Mnangagwa from stealing the vote.
“2023 the focus must be on ‘stopping’ rather than ‘exposing’ rigging. Stopping secures the vote whereas exposing simply gives you social media fodder. The days of challenging, rigged outcomes are over. Concentrate on protecting the vote. No to ghost votes. Let your vote count,” he ranted on Twitter handle Thursday.
Hectic events in neighbouring Zambia where some opposition voters were seen on social media videos taking matters into their hands amid allegations against incumbent President Edgar Lungu, election rigging inspired Advocate Mpofu’s advice.
Since its formation at the turn of the Millenium, the opposition has always claimed that Zanu PF rig elections without providing countermeasures.

By A Correspondent- Zambian’s out going President Edgar Lungu has suffered another blow after Sunday, his top aide, Edify Hamukale, resigned from the party.
Hamukale, the former southern province minister and losing Mazabuka Central Parliamentary candidate, resigned from Lungu’s Patriotic front PF party without giving reasons.
Hamukale also resigned from his position as a Member of the party’s Central Committee.

We appeal to all countries in the region especially Zimbabwe to learn from the Zambian experience. In particular, we call for state institutions to serve the Constitution and not partisan interests.

By News24- A South African top auditor and author of the forensic report that forms the basis of former president Jacob Zuma’s upcoming corruption trial, Johan van der Walt, has died.
Van der Walt died on Saturday in Johannesburg.
It was still unclear what caused Van der Walt’s death, but sources close to family said he had died of natural causes.
Van der Walt had a long and complicated history as a partner and forensic auditor at KPMG, before he joined FTI in 2017.
After building a reputation of a “bloodhound” auditor, who oversaw the Saambou, Schabir Shaik and Zuma forensic probes, Van der Walt left KPMG after a bitter divorce over the firm’s controversial probe into the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
He led the investigation into the now debunked “rogue unit” at SARS and was heavily criticised by former SARS officials, minister Pravin Gordhan and KPMG for his approach and findings.
At the time, his report was used by supporters of Zuma to justify the removal of Gordhan as finance minister and the shutting down of the SARS investigating unit.
KPMG distanced itself from Van der Walt’s report and he left the firm. He defended his investigation to an inquiry led by advocate Dumisa Ntsebeza.
Ironically, Van der Walt was lined up to be the main witness against Zuma when his corruption trial resumes in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg later this month.
News24 understands that he had consulted with prosecutors in preparation for the trial.
As the author of KPMG’s forensic investigation into money flows between Shaik and Zuma, Van der Walt would have been the State’s chief witness in the trial, as he was in Shaik’s trial.
He famously told Judge Hilary Squires in that case in 2004 that he was not a watchdog but a bloodhound.

How can the elections be fair when people have been murdered and many others are in hiding after being brutalised. Is that democracy? We have written to the Electoral Commission of Zambia but they have continued announcing the results. By Farai D Hove | Government Spokesman, Ndabaningi Mangwana has mocked the winner of the 2018 Presidential elections, Nelson Chamisa, saying Zambia’s President elect Hakainde Hichilema has quickly forgotten about him.
Speaking satirically, Mangwana likened Chamisa to a lonely single man. He said Chamisa is like a bridesmaid who will never get married.
As could have easily happened in Zambia during the just ended polls, Mangwana’s boss, Emmerson Mnangagwa deployed the army to change the 2018 election results, and the announcement for the election rigging deployment was made on the state broadcaster, ZBC before the 2018 polls.
After 6 people were shot death in Aug 2018, Mnangagwa set up a self serving commission of inquiry known as the Motlanthe Commission.
To date over 25 people have been shot death and at least 50women raped under Mnangagwa’s orders, and the politician has gone further to even threaten opposition supporters with Future military level punishment to punish them over petty offences such as the ‘crime’ of stopping the rain, literally.
Over the last 3 years, Chamisa has suffered bullying of a serious kind as he is subjected to among other demands, that he joins Mnangagwa’s party project known as Polad.
As the torment continues, Mnangagwa has added salt to injury by saying Chamisa will remain isolated.
He wrote: In the folklore of matrimonial unions, there is always that bridesmaid who is never destined to marry. She will part of a number of bridal crews but for her, the BIG Day will never come. After each wedding the newly-weds make new friends and stop communing with certain “singles.”

By A Correspondent- Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has sacked the energy minister and his chief of staff facing corruption charges.
The two and one other official – Enock Chihana, a partner in the governing Tonse Alliance – were arrested on Monday for their alleged involvement in a state oil contract.
They were reportedly trying to influence the way that contracts for the supply of oil were awarded.
Minister Newton Kambala was not replaced upon his dismissal.
The functions of the energy ministry have been transferred to the president’s office.
The chief of staff Chris Chaima Banda’s replacement was also not named in the announcement about his dismissal.
Mr Kambala and Mr Banda have not commented on the matter.
Mr Chihana commented about the probe, saying taking to the anti-corruption bureau was normal and an opportunity to clear his name. – BBC

ZRP at the weekend said the arrested drivers were at Mashava police station.
” On 13/08/21, Police in Mashava impounded 2 buses, (MVI Coaches bus and Clarity Coaches bus) and arrested the drivers for smuggling and contravening COVID-19 regulations,” ZRP posted.

Depression affects more than 260 million people in the world while around half of all mental health conditions start by age 14. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in young people aged 15-29. Among active football players, 23 per cent report sleep disturbance, while 9% have reported depression and a further 7% suffer from anxiety. Among retired players, these figures increase, with 28% struggling to sleep and depression and anxiety affecting 13% and 11% respectively (source: FIFPRO)
Working from home, unemployment, school closures and social isolation have affected people around the world during the COVID-19 pandemic; the challenges for people with mental health conditions, for whom access to treatment has, in many cases, been disrupted, are even greater.
“As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, it is as important as ever to look after our mental and physical health,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization.
“WHO is delighted to support the #ReachOut campaign, spearheaded by FIFA to encourage people to talk about their mental health.”
The video awareness campaign features Legends, current players and special guests, who have lent their support to this mental health campaign, and at times sharing their lived experience. The campaign is being shared on FIFA digital channels, with multimedia toolkits provided to the 211 FIFA member associations and to media agencies to facilitate dissemination and use within Europe and beyond.
Meanwhile, players from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam reinforce WHO advice on how to help to keep our minds healthy, as well as our bodies, in the special ASEAN edition of #ReachOut.
Secretary-General of ASEAN Dato Lim Jock Hoi said, “Mental health and well-being are just as important as physical health and safety. Under the Chairmanship of Brunei Darussalam, ASEAN is taking steps to advance cooperation with external partners on mental health, in order to provide the ASEAN Community with the necessary and appropriate mental health and psychosocial support services.”
The World Health Organization (WHO) and FIFA signed a four-year collaboration in 2019 to promote healthy lifestyles through football globally.
The two organisations jointly launched the ‘Pass the message to kick out coronavirus’ campaign in March 2020 to share advice on effective measures to protect people from COVID-19.
This was followed by the #BeActive campaign in April 2020 to encourage people to stay healthy at home during the pandemic, and #SafeHome, a campaign launched to support those at risk from domestic violence, in May 2020. More recently, the two organisations teamed up at the FIFA Club World Cup to #ACTogether to promote the need for fair access to COVID-19 vaccines, treatments and diagnostics, and to encourage people to keep practicing life-saving, everyday public health measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and to protect health.

Johane Marange Apostolic church has confirmed the death of a married 14-year-old Johanne Marange Apostolic Church girl Memory Machaya.
Reports suggest that Memory Machaya, who was from Kwekwe, was forced to drop out of school when she was in form 1 to get married to Evans Momberume.
She died during childbirth at the church’s shrine in Marange, but, the location of her grave is in dispute. Her family insists that she was buried at the shrine soon after death, but the church denies the allegations.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi has said police were conducting investigations that were expected to be complete before Friday.
Momberume and everyone who may have facilitated that marriage will likely be arrested if it’s established that Memory was underage.
The church’s coordinator and spokesperson, Mr Nyasha Marange, told The Herald that the church would not stand in the way of law enforcement agents as they probe the case. He said:
It is true that Memory was married to Evans Momberume. The police should probe the case to its logical conclusion. She died after giving birth and her baby is with the Machayas in Kwekwe.
As the Johanne Marange Apostolic Church, we will not protect any of our congregants being investigated by law enforcement agents for any criminal offence, be it murder, rape or marrying a minor.
The police should carry out their duties without fear or favour. No one is above the law and if any of our congregants has a case to answer, let the due process take its course.
As a church, we have been preaching against marrying of minors. During our Saturday church meetings, elders take time to preach against child marriages. No one should be married before the age of 18.
Marange said he did not know where Memory was buried but vehemently denied that she was buried at the church shrine saying the tradition is that if one dies at the shrine, arrangements are made to ferry that person’s body to their place of origin.

As churches open for sit-in services today, police have said they will keep a close eye to ensure worshippers heed regulations that all congregants must be fully vaccinated.
This comes after the Government last week said churches could reopen on condition their members have taken both doses of Covid-19 vaccines while also abiding by other existing coronavirus protocols.
Authorities ordered the closure of churches in June this year following a spike in Covid-19 cases as a result of the Delta variant that has seen increased deaths.
In an interview with The Sunday Mail, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said churches should comply with the vaccination order announced by Cabinet last week.
“Churches are implored to strictly comply with the vaccination directive for congregants as stipulated by Cabinet last week.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) will assist health officials to ensure compliance and arrest anyone defying the safety protocols. Police will also take action against those who might try to take advantage of the directive and produce fake vaccination certificates,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.
Church leaders from across the religious divide said their members were responsible citizens and would abide by the law.- The Sunday Mail

AS the enervating Zanu-PF factional wars threaten to rip the party apart, Politburo member, Ziyambi Ziyambi this week launched a scathing attack on Mashonaland West provincial youth chairman Vengai Musengi for fanning divisions and attempting to grab lucrative gold mines using the party name.
Musengi is widely seen as a possible contender for the provincial chairmanship vacated by the Justice minister two months ago.
Speaking during a Zanu-PF provincial coordinating committee (PCC) meeting held at Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) Thursday, Ziyambi deplored the use of social media to settle differences, saying organisations affiliated to Zanu-PF had no business setting the agenda, but should wait for directions from party leaders regarding party policies and stances.
Ziyambi chided Musengi for trying to wrestle gold mines using the party name.
“We have become the worst province, with Zanu-PF members taking their fights to social media. I was shocked when l was elevated to the Politburo, l thought it was going to be an occasion of celebrating, but it became an occasion for fighting for the chairmanship. It became an occasion to say ‘there is a vacancy and l should be the one to fill the position’. Insults were exchanged on social media, and up to this day members are still attacking one another,” Ziyambi said.
He added: “We don’t have party policy that says we must go out there and grab mines. We must mind our language and desist from actions that soil the party name by saying AAG has endorsed takeover of mines. Zanu-PF affiliates wait for the party to make policy and give direction accordingly which affiliates then follow.”
“I don’t want members claiming the Justice minister was there when it was agreed that property rights must be violated, no, no.”
Musengi, and his leadership team, are being accused of wrestling gold mines from an empowerment trust, Zuvarabuda Empowerment Trust (ZET), which is wholly owned by the governing party.
ZET has since lobbied President Emmerson Mnangagwa to stem the shenanigans of the party’s youth provincial leadership.
The accused officials including Musengi, Timothy Masviba, Givemore Nyanhowe and Taurai Bota, are also accused of name-dropping the party’s national leadership in the alleged takeover of gold mines in the province.
Musengi allegedly imposed his team at Pickstone Peerless Mine in Chegutu replacing the party youths who had initiated the empowerment project.
Also at Midwinter Mine (4 Stumper) Pickstone area, the all-too-powerful youth chairman is said to have imposed his gangs to loot gold.
Reports further claim that Musengi allegedly worked in cahoots with Breckridge Mining Directors to displace Danangwe District Youth Mining Co-operative (DDYMC).
DDYMC and Danangwe District Youth chairman Stewart Luckford are said to have resisted Musengi’s takeover bid.
