UN Secretary Calls On Zim Govt To Protect Citizens’ Rights

United Nations Secretary General António Guterres has urged the government of Zimbabwe to ensure the protection of all fundamental human rights of citizens including freedom of opinion and expression and freedom of assembly.

This follows a global outcry by Zimbabweans using the hashtag #ZimbabweanLivesMatter for the world to speak about human rights abuses allegedly perpetrated by state security agents.

In his daily update yesterday, Guterres said;

“The Secretary-General has been following with concern recent developments in Zimbabwe. He urges the Government of Zimbabwe to ensure the protection of all fundamental human rights, notably the freedom of opinion and expression and the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association, in accordance with Zimbabwe’s human rights obligations. He also calls on all political actors and civil society to resolve issues peacefully through inclusive dialogue.”

Fears Over Machete Gangs Comeback

By A Corespondent- Disruption of employment and increasing levels of poverty during the COVID-19 pandemic have forced artisanal small-scale miners to resume their activities, raising fear of the resurfacing of the dreaded machete gangs.

This was revealed by the Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (Zela) in its COVID-19 mining sector and communities’ situational report.

“With many jobs and sources of income being disrupted, and the high costs of basic commodities, many people are increasingly moving into the ASM [artisanal small-scale] gold sector for the quick money they can get,” the Zela report said.

“A series of machete violence cases have been reported in June and July 2020. In Zvishavane, one man was injured during a gold rush.

“In Matobo, at Nugget Mine, a machete gang violence case was reported. Reports of the gang invasions were also recorded in Maphisa, Makwe, and Mvana, with criminals and gold gangs escaping with cash, digital scales, and gold ore.”

Added Zela: “Machete violence incidents have been recorded in a number of mines in Bubi, where the criminal gangs managed to get away with the gold ore.

“In Gwanda, machete gangs have been reported at Vhovha Mine, where they assaulted and injured several miners and got away with gold ore. The police were able to arrest the gang leader after he was handed over to police by the miners who tracked him down to Gwanda.”

The Zela report also said soldiers were reported to be raiding artisanal miners, while police were arresting and closing some mines in cases where miners were not complying with COVID 19 regulations.

“In Matabeleland South, 145 ASM miners were arrested in Gwanda, while 115 were arrested in Bulilimangwe.

“During a recent Parliamentary Committee on Mines meeting in Mutare (23 July 2020) a representative of the Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) informed parliamentarians that many artisanal and small-scale miners are being arrested, but gold mining activities go on even at mid-night in the ASM sector,” Zela said.

Recently, the Zimbabwe Miners Federation leader Wellington Takavarasha appeared before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines led by Edmond Mkaratigwa and called for the formalisation of artisanal mining to enable the miners to operate within the law.

Zela also said there were growing mining claims disputes within the ASM which could be attributed to the use of archaic manual claim allocation and mapping systems in Zimbabwe.

“The use of the manual system has resulted in claim disputes with some claims being double pegged or boundaries overlapping.

“The disputes have resulted in violence. A case was recorded in Penhalonga. A gold miner allegedly hired bouncers to rob a rival of gold ore worth over USD$2 500 over a mining boundary dispute.”

They said the Ministry of Mines confirmed that processing of mining licenses was slow due to a high number of applications in 2020 and shortages of staff.

“Over the year, the Ministry of Mines has been issuing 2 500 mining titles per year. However, by July 2020, there have been a massive number of applications for mining licences to the Ministry of Mines.

“A large number of applications are straining the Ministry since it does not have adequate resources-human resources and equipment to process mining titles. This has affected the speed of processing mining titles.” Zela said.

Harare Businessman Tests COVID-19+

By A Correspondent- Popular Harare businessman Eddie Mboma Nyatanga who is also the Zimbabwe National Soccer Supporters Association founder and former leader has announced that he was diagnosed with COVID-19 and he is on a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

Eddie said this as he was raising awareness of the infamous disease and said we can’t even gamble with the disease to resume domestic football because it is still not safe to do so.

Eddie revealed his status in a statement that says:

It is with a heavy heart that I come to you with not so bad news. I got tested for Covid-19 on Saturday and the results came out positive. The results have now been confirmed today (yesterday) by medical experts.

I have seen my colleagues in sport, succumbing to this deadly pandemic, and I would like to urge my relatives, associates and dear friends to join me in prayers as I go into the mandatory 14-days quarantine.

I have come into contact with different people and I urge them to all get tested. I am waiting for further instructions from the medical experts. I might be quarantined at my home or at a designated quarantine centre, depending on their recommendations.

The medical team is due to visit my home to disinfect it and also to test those whom I have come into contact with here. I would like to urge those I have been in contact with in recent days to be tested and avoid getting into contact with other people. I’m now taking it one day at a time but I’m quite positive that I’ll completely make a fully recovery as I’m taking all the necessary precautions and I’m in constant touch with my doctor.

Now, this is the reality. My close friends, and all those in sport in general, and football in particular, can now understand that the virus is real. I have decided to reveal my status for the love of my friends and Zimbabweans. Everyone is at risk, as it stands. So, I am requesting that the authorities to conduct door-to-door tests, both at business premises and homes. I have been into contact with several people, including celebrities, who will all have to be traced.

It’s now very clear that the eye of the coronavirus storm of passing through our communities. A few months ago, we used to watch from a distance, telling each other that this had nothing to do with us but a concern for some countries far away from here. This has changed dramatically and what we do now will be decisive in helping us tame this monster.

That is why I don’t think we can gamble with having the domestic football campaign being started, in these circumstances, because we are at the crossroads. We just have to deal with this storm and pray that when it passes we would still be standing so that we can start getting back to normal again.

Football, right now, just like many of our sporting disciplines, don’t matter at all because these are games that we can still play next year while we can’t replace the lives we could lose if we drop our guard.

Zimbabwe has recorded 4339 COVID-19 cases since 20 March 2020.

US Senators Defend Sanctions Move On Tagwirei, Sakunda Holdings

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Jim Risch (R-Idaho), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Chris Coons (D-Del.), member of the Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health Policy, today commended actions by the U.S. Department of the Treasury under the Zimbabwe Sanctions Program, particularly with respect to combating corruption by Zimbabwe’s elites.

“Today’s action by the Department of the Treasury to hold accountable those who perpetrate public corruption, particularly among Zimbabwe’s ruling elite, is commendable and reflects steadfast U.S. commitment to supporting Zimbabweans as they seek to rid their country of corruption,” said the senators. “We are pleased to see the Departments of Treasury and State continue to act on our request from January to update the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons list (SDN list) under the Zimbabwe Sanctions Program, and to consider our suggestions.”

“We condemn the ongoing government crackdown against opposition figures, journalists, and citizens who speak out against public corruption and who seek greater accountability from their government,” they continued. “Designating Kudakwashe Regimond Tagwirei and Sakunda Holdings will further diminish the ability of corrupt Zimbabweans to continue to undermine the country’s economic and democratic development as means of self-enrichment and preservation.”

Background: In 2003, the United States began to impose sanctions on select individuals with ties to the ZANU-PF regime and entities known to facilitate human rights abuses, undermine the rule of law, and engage in the looting of state resources for personal or political gain. Following a January 2020 request by Senators Risch and Coons, the U.S. Treasury Department on March 11, 2020, removed four individuals and added Anselem Sanyatwe and Owen Ncube to the SDN list under the Zimbabwe Sanctions Program. On August 5, 2020, the Department designated Kudakwashe Regimond Tagwirei and Sakunda Holdings. The timing of today’s announcement marks the second anniversary of a violent crackdown against citizens protesting flawed elections and the deaths of six protesters killed that day.

Woman Slapped With $250k Lawsuit Over Adulterous Relationship With Married Man

By A Correspondent- Chipo Mudadi, a Chivhu woman, who is being sued for $250 000 in damages for engaging in an adulterous relationship with a married man, yesterday challenged the lawsuit in court.

Chipo was slapped with the lawsuit a month after her sister Enita Mudadi was ordered to pay $15 000 adultery damages at the Chivhu Civil Court.

According to papers filed at the court, Angela Chibasa of Chambara in Chivhu is claiming $250 000 plus cost of suit and interest from Chipo, whom she claims is in an adulterous relationship with her husband Arnold Fungai Chibasa, a pirate taxis owner.

Angela, the plaintiff, told magistrate Sam Chitumwa that Chipo was involved in an illicit affair with her husband while she was fully aware that the she and Arnold were legally married.

Chipo and Arnold had a child who is now 11 years old as a result of that adulterous relationship.

Chipo dismissed Angela’s claims saying she did not know that Arnold was married when she dated him.

She, however, admitted that she conceived a child with Arnold while she was a Form 4 pupil at Liebenberg High School in 2008.

She argues that she eloped to Arnold’s home when she was three months pregnant where she was assaulted by Angela and she ended the relationship.

She got married to another man but did not tell him that she was pregnant with Arnold’s child.

Chipo accused Angela of destroying her (Chipo’s) marriage after she (Angela) revealed who the biological father of her daughter was, which resulted in her being divorced by the man she had married.

On April 18, 2020, she then asked Angela and Arnold to take care of her daughter since she could no longer support her financially.

“I only visit defendant’s residence to see my child. I am no longer in love with her husband,” she told the court.

She pleaded with the court to dismiss the suit, arguing that Angela and Arnold acquired their marriage certificate when she had already given birth to the child.

“SADC, AU Should Denounce Mnangagwa’s Crackdown”: Human Rights Watch

Zimbabwe: SADC, AU Should Denounce Crackdown
Dozens Arrested, Harassed for Peaceful Protests

(Johannesburg, August 6, 2020) – The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union should urgently and publicly speak out against the Zimbabwe government’s crackdown on peaceful anti-corruption protests on July 31, 2020, Human Rights Watch said today.

Zimbabwe authorities have arrested at least 60 people, including the novelist Tsitsi Dangarembga and the opposition MDC Alliance spokesperson, Fadzayi Mahere, in connection with the protests. Sixteen people were injured and required medical attention. Dangarembga was released on bail the next day.

“SADC and the African Union should call out Zimbabwe’s government for its repression and rampant abuses throughout the country,” said Dewa Mavhinga, southern Africa director at Human Rights Watch. “It’s important for these regional institutions to send strong signals to the Mnangagwa administration that flagrant violations of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and other human rights treaties are unacceptable.”

The Zimbabwe authorities have increasingly arbitrarily arrested critics of the government, Human Rights Watch said. On July 20, the police arrested and detained Hopewell Chin’ono, an awarding-winning journalist, and Jacob Ngarivhume, leader of the political group Transform Zimbabwe. Both were denied bail and remain in custody, accused of inciting public violence. Chin’ono and Ngarivhume had helped expose high-level corruption in Zimbabwe and called for nationwide anti-corruption protests on July 31.

On the eve of the anti-corruption protests on July 30, security forces raided the house of Mduduzi Mathuthu, a prominent journalist and editor of the online newspaper Zimlive, in Bulawayo. Failing to find him, they arrested his three nephews, Tawanda Muchehiwa, 22, Advent Mathuthu, 25, and Amandlenkosi Mathuthu, 19. The security agents also detained Mathuthu’s sister, Nomagugu Mathuthu, to compel him to turn himself in, but released her hours later. Advent Mathuthu was charged with incitement of public violence after allegedly being found with flyers saying “Mnangagwa & His Cabinet Must Resign,” but was freed by a court.

The Zimbabwe chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA-Zimbabwe) issued a statement, emailed to Human Rights Watch, that security agents “dropped off” Mathuthu’s nephew Muchehiwa at his home on August 1 at about 10 p.m. The group said that he had been tortured by alleged security agents, resulting in serious injuries. According to medical documents reviewed by Human Rights Watch, Muchehiwa was assaulted with a wooden log and sprayed with an unknown substance all over his body. He suffered extensive bruises, an acute kidney injury, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

On July 31, soldiers and the police arrested and briefly detained a lawyer, Obey Shava, and his three clients, activists Joanna Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri, and Netsai Marovato, as they drove to Harare Central Police Station to report in as required under their bail agreement. Police had stopped the three activists on May 13 at a checkpoint in Harare and allegedly abducted, tortured, and sexually assaulted them.

Shava, a member of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, told Human Rights Watch that “I complied with all the instructions they [security forces] gave, that notwithstanding, I was ordered to lie down on the ground. My client, Chimbiri, was assaulted and molested in my presence. I felt helpless.” Chimbiri said that a soldier tore off her top and brassiere and fondled her. Chimbiri was later charged with disorderly conduct in a public place, even though the security forces had assaulted her.

On August 4, President Emmerson Mnangagwa publicly denounced critics in a speech, describing them as “dark forces,” “a few rogue Zimbabweans,” and “terrorist opposition groupings.” He said: “Those who promote hate and disharmony will never win. The bad apples that have attempted to divide our people and weaken our systems shall be flushed out. Good shall triumph over evil.” He said nothing about the constitutional rights of Zimbabweans to peacefully protest or the government’s domestic and international human rights obligations.

Following the crackdown on protesters, the chairperson of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Solomon Dersso, said in a Twitter post on August 3, “As we follow [the] situation in Zimbabwe, critical to reiterate the African Commission on Human Rights’ view that actions of states even in fighting Covid-19 should comply with principles of legality, necessity, and proportionality, thus no basis for arbitrary deprivation of liberty or life, inhumane treatment or torture.”

The Zimbabwe crackdown on activists has inspired an online campaign, with the hashtag #ZimbabweanLivesMatter, which has resulted in more than 700,000 tweets in two days, but neither SADC nor the African Union has spoken out about the situation. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the current chairperson of the African Union, should press President Mnangagwa to end the wave of repression and promote respect for human rights.

“President Ramaphosa should muster support from within the African Union to hold Zimbabwe’s leadership to their human rights obligations,” Mavhinga said. “African regional actors should not remain silent in the face of escalating repression in Zimbabwe.”

As Elected Leader, I Will Bring Prosperity” Insist Mnangagwa – Failed To Precisely Because You Rigged Elections

By Patrick Guramatunhu- “Muromo hauzarirwi nerwizi!” (There is no flooded river that big mouth cannot cross!) so goes the Shona adage. President Mnangagwa, big mouth, told the nation in his State of Nation Address there is no flooded river he cannot cross.

“The world is in crisis. Borders have been closed, trade has ceased and businesses negatively impacted by the deadly Covid-19 pandemic,” he acknowledged.

“As elected leaders, we have to take the responsibility of providing solutions, ensuring stability and setting direction in the midst of it all.”

Zanu PF has blatantly rigged elections ever since the party got into power in 1980. Mnangagwa disregarded his own promise to hold free, fair and credible elections and, once again, blatantly rigged July 2018 elections.

“The final results as announced by the (Zimbabwe) Electoral Commission (ZEC) contained numerous errors and lacked adequate traceability, transparency and verifiability,” stated the EU Zimbabwe Election Mission final report. “As such, many aspects of the 2018 elections in Zimbabwe failed to meet international standards.”

ZEC failed to produce something as basic a verified voters’ roll, a common sense and legal requirement, for Pete’s sake!

Zimbabwe’s failure to hold free, fair and credible elections is a particularly sore point because it is the root cause of the country’s political paralysis and economic meltdown. The country has been stuck for 40 years and counting with this vote rigging, corrupt, incompetent and tyrannical Zanu PF regime and the decades of misrule have left the country is ruins.

But most annoying of all, Mnangagwa’s repeated claim that the July 2018 elections were free, fair and credible and this Zanu PF regime is legitimate means the party will resist all calls for the implementation of democratic reforms necessary to end this curse of rigged elections. The prospect of yet another rigged elections in 2023 is simply unthinkable.

After 40 years of corrupt and tyrannical rule, the one thing Zimbabwe needs above all else is free, fair and credible elections, the pre-requisite for good governance. Our task is to make sure the democratic reforms are implemented before the next elections. We must not allow ourselves to be bamboozled by the nonsensical claims of an illegitimate tyrant!

“The New Dispensation came with the clear goal to improve the plight of the majority of our people, through an elaborate agenda to reform, restructure and rebuild, towards the achievement of Vision 2030. Undoubtedly, my administration has faced many hurdles and attacks since its inauguration,” continued Mnangagwa.

“These included the divisive politics of some opposition elements, the illegal economic sanctions, cyclones, droughts and more recently, the deadly Covid19 pandemic. Added to this, is economic aggression, local currency manipulation and detractors who fear the inevitable imminent success of our reforms.”

All nonsense! The one clear and stated goal of the new dispensation was “Restore legacy!”, as the November 2017 coup plotters stated. The wholesale looting of diamonds in Marange and Chiadzwa and other national resources that had flourished during Mugabe’s days took off once again with renewed vigour.

In a very rare moment of honestly, Mugabe admitted the country was “swindled out of US$15 billion in diamonds!” He never arrested one swindler or recover one dollar. Mnangagwa promised “zero tolerance to corruption” when he took over following the November 2017 coup.

The only diamond swindler he has dared to go after is former Police Commissioner Augustine Chihuri, for political and personal reasons. Other than that, nothing has change corruption has continued!

The IMF, WB and many other international financial institution have stopped giving Zimbabwe any financial assistance, some have even cut back on aid donation; they fear the money will be wasted – such is the country’s corruption reputation.

Of course, there is no hope of this corrupt and incompetent Zanu PF regime reviving the economy, much less attaining the middle income status by 2030. Prosperity is build of sound economic policies and good governance not voodoo-economics and corruption.

Zanu PF has promised mass economic prosperity, “Gutsa ruzhinji” as Mugabe called it in the 1980s, but not now but in the near future. Meanwhile the people were told they had to work hard and endure hardships to earn the prosperity. The ruling elite did not share in the hardship, indeed they have prospered by leaps and bounds.

For 40 years now the people have waited for their day to bask in economic prosperity, they are now to wait until 2030, meanwhile they are to endure even worse economic hardship as the nation sinks deeper and deeper into the abyss.

Of course, vision 2030 is a mirage, the same mirage the nation has been chasing since 1980! And without good governance, economic prosperity will remain a mirage – that is a fact!

Zimbabwe’s economic mess and its collapsed health care service at the outbreak of the corona virus outbreak meant the country was going to be hit hard. Zanu PF’s blundering incompetence has certainly made the situation worse. The regime’s failure to test for the virus aggressively, for example, meant those with the infection have been left in the community to infect others, thus spreading the virus far and wide, when they should have been in isolation.

Mnangagwa, just like President Xi Jinping of China, is obsessed about keeping the confirm covid-19 cases and deaths as low as possible, to hide his blundering incompetence in the handling of the virus.

There is evidence to show that China denying the corona virus outbreak and then then for a while under reported corona virus cases and deaths. At least the Chinese government did mobilised the necessary resource to get the virus back under control. The same cannot be said about this Zanu PF government.

Officially, Zimbabwe has 4 221 confirmed covid-19 cases and 81 deaths compared to SA’s 521 318 cases and 8 884 deaths but only because Zimbabwe has not been testing even those with covid-19 symptoms! one expects Zimbabwe, with 1/4 the population of SA, to have 1/4 of SA’s cases and deaths or 130 000 and 2 221 respectively.

So, as of now, there are 40 times as many covid-19 cases and deaths spreading the virus blissfully unaware they have the virus all because, to look good, the regime did not want the truth told. The Zanu PF regime has already passed a law to punish, up to 20 years in jail, anyone reporting anything other than the government vetted covid-19 figures.

“Accountability and transparency will keep on being enforced in every facet of our society. These values are, after all, the DNA of the Second Republic and must permeate all our institutions. Our political reforms have equally been guided by these twin concepts. We repealed and replaced POSA and AIPPA in the spirit of these ideals,” continued Mnangagwa.

Zanu PF’s DNA is that of a corrupt, incompetent murderous and vote rigging dictatorship and, like all dictatorship with knack for saying one thing and doing the opposite. Indeed, Zanu PF has always had the courage to rig elections and claim the elections were free and fair precisely because the regime is not democratically accountable to the people.

Zimbabwe will remain stuck in this political and economic hell-on-earth we find ourselves in until country implements the democratic reforms necessary for free, fair and credible elections. Zanu PF is in denial that the party rigged the last elections, it cannot be trusted to implement any meaningful reforms. The party must step down, this is the only way out and it is not negotiable.

“Although our progress has been slowed down, rest assured that we shall achieve our objectives. We will overcome. We will defeat the attack and stop the bleeding of our economy. We will overcome attempts at destabilisation of our society by a few rogue Zimbabweans acting in league with foreign detractors.”

This is just foolhardy political intransigency of a regime that does not accept its failures and, unforgivable of all, deny the people their fundamental right to have a meaningful say in the governance of country. Zimbabwe is a failed state and the threat of the country descending into instability, violence and chaos is real.

And it is you President Mnangagwa and your Zanu PF cronies who have dragged the nation to the edge of the precipice, you must step back. Calling those crying for change and justice rogues and detractors is not going to get the country out of this mess or end the tragic human suffering!

It is for you, Mr Mnangagwa, to step back from the abyss and step down! Step down now before you take us all over the edge!

Politburo Tensions Expose Rifts In Zanu Pf

By A Correspondent- Tensions between the president and his deputy reportedly took a nasty turn during a politburo meeting last week as President Mnangagwa accused Vice President Chiwenga of trying to topple him from power using the 31 July protests, sources privy to the development told Bloomberg.

According to the publication, the president shouted at his deputy and said he wanted to embarrass him, but Chiwenga reportedly denied the allegations, according to the 2 people who spoke to the publication.

Reported the publication:

At a meeting of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front’s politburo last week, Mnangagwa shouted at Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, according to two people familiar with the situation. They asked not to be identified because the quarrel hasn’t been publicly disclosed.

The president accused his deputy of instigating a plan to use an opposition protest on July 31 over the deteriorating economic situation to embarrass the national leader, the people said. Some party members would have been encouraged to demonstrate alongside the opposition, but focus their criticism on Mnangagwa to weaken his standing within the ruling party, the people said.

Chiwenga denied any plot against the president, saying he’d endorsed Mnangagwa as president for Zimbabwe’s 2023 elections, the people said. He said he had protected Mnangagwa against enemies within the party who have now fled the country.

It is still not clear how the protests were going to be used to topple the president, however the government responded to the planned protests by threatening civilians, arresting, beating and torturing the organisers, would be protestors, and protestors and people responded by staying at home and not going out to protests.

“Today we regret to report a death at facility level of a 22-year-old man from Bulawayo and to date the city has a cumulative total of 21 deaths.”

Bulawayo has a total of 1 065 Covid-19 cases, Matabeleland South has 437 cases while Matabeleland North has 60 cases.

Of the total 1 065 cases reported in Bulawayo, 1 016 are local transmissions.

Mpilo Central Hospital acting chief executive officer Professor Solwayo Ngwenya recently said the confirmed Covid-19 cases and deaths will continue to rise as long as people do not comply with lockdown regulations.

He said people should desist from visiting the city centre and all public places.

“The best way for us to beat this virus is to prevent it.

“Our resources are really stretched and we will not be able to cope with huge numbers of Covid-19 cases.

“We will definitely record more cases as long as people violate lockdown regulations,” said Prof Ngwenya.

By A Correspondent| Deputy Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, George Charamba has intimated that the latest United States sanctions on Sakunda Holdings and its owner Kudakwashe Tagwirei will likely hit Zimbabwe’s fuel supply hard.

Posting on social media, Charamba writing under the name @Jamwanda2 said the sanctions against Tagwirei are clearly intended to disrupt energy supply into Zimbabwe.

“US SANCTIONS AGAINST SAKUNDA and its owners are clearly intended to disrupt energy supply into and throughout ZImbabwe. The US Govt has done what previous US Administrations could not do to the illegal Ian Smith regime under UN sanctions!! Therein lies the racist side of the US,” said Charamba.

D – Day For Chinono And Ngarivhume

Justice Tawanda Chitapi of the Harare High Court on Monday postponed to Today, his ruling on bail applications by journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and Transform Zimbabwe leader Jacob Ngarivhume.

T

Chin’ono and Ngarivhume’s two-week detention may come to an end today as the state appears not to be having compelling evidence why bail can not be granted.

Chin’ono and Ngarivhume’s hearings were due to be heard by the High Court last Thursday but were postponed.

Both men were arrested a fortnight ago on allegations of inciting public violence after they reportedly used social media to support calls for anti-corruption protests on 31 July.

Chin’ono has been working tirelessly over the past few months to expose corrupt government officials, with the major story being the Draxgate Affair in which the Ministry of Health purchased medical sundries from a controversial company at highly inflated prices.

Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa recently said Chin’ono was not arrested for exposing corruption but for inciting public violence.

However, media analysts believe Chin’ono was targeted for exposing high-level graft and his arrest serves to warn other journalists not to report on corruption by the political elite.

More Benefits For Civil Servants

starfm.co.zw

Minister Ncube

Civil servants are expected to get additional benefits to cushion them from rising cost of living with health workers expected to get Covid-19 allowances, a Cabinet Minister has said.

Finance and Economic Development Minister Prof Mthuli Ncube said negotiations for annual cost of living adjustments between Government and its employees under the National Joint Negotiating Council had started and will end within the next two months.

Prof Ncube said this yesterday while responding to questions from journalists during a post-Cabinet media briefing held in Harare yesterday.

He said civil servants were expected to get the balance of US$75 which Government committed to pay for three months as a Covid-19 allowance.

Prof Ncube had been asked what Government was doing to bring an end to job action by health workers.

“We have started negotiations for annual normal cost of living adjustments, that process will take us to around September or October there will be further adjustments in that regard.

“There will be special programmes that recognises the health work they do and the risk that they take.

“There will be a special health sector allowance and then there is a special Covid-19 risk allowance, then there is a US$75 wage balance. So there is a layer of additional benefits and these benefits are tax free.

“These are some of the benefits to improve working conditions for health workers as well as the entire civil service,” said Prof Ncube.

Two months ago, Government made a 50 percent salary adjustment to civil servants and an additional US$75 that it said would be paid for three months.

Prof Ncube said it was critical to cushion civil servants from the vagaries of inflation.

Turning to the $300 being paid to vulnerable people, Prof Ncube said Government will always review the money in line with inflationary pressures and national budget considerations.

He said the money was recently raised to $300 from $180 after a realisation to continued rise to price of goods and services.

Earlier on Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Sithembiso Nyoni said Cabinet had adopted a report on the operations of Mosi-Oa-Tunya Development Company, which was presented by the Minister of Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Mangaliso                        Ndlovu.

She said the company was formed in 2012 as an investment vehicle for Government in the development of tourism facilities in Victoria Falls.

“It assisted in mobilising resources for the development of infrastructure and facilities for the hosting of the 2013 United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly, with initial focus being on the construction of an Integrated Tourism Resort comprising a 5 000-seater Convention Centre as the anchor project.

“The 271 hectare piece of land earmarked for this development, which unfortunately failed to take off, has now been identified as the future growth node of Victoria Falls Town,” said Minister Nyoni.

Zimbabwe continues to face a myriad of challenges both political and economic.

On Friday opposition forces had planned street protests across the country but their efforts were thwarted by security forces.

A number of activists have been arrested in connection with the protests. Others have been calling for the release of the investigative journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono, who was arrested and taken from his home in Harare on the 20th of July, 2020.

ZIMBABWE’S RESPONSE TO THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK
Cabinet received from the Honourable Vice President KCD.Mohadi, as chairman of the Ad Hoc Inter-Ministerial Task Force on the Covid-19, an update on the steps that are being taken to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The cumulative rapid screening and PCR tests conducted as of 3 August, 2020 are 137 808 (73 174 RDT and 64 634 PCR).

The country has recorded a cumulative 4 075 confirmed Covid-19 cases compared to the previously reported 2 704, which is a 51 percent increase, while the cumulative number of confirmed local cases has risen by 78 percent from the previously reported 1 675 to 2 982.

Most of the local cases are in Harare (1 299), Bulawayo (947), Midlands Province (245), Mashonaland East (161) and Manicaland (113).

Recoveries have increased by 95 percent from 542 to 1 057, while deaths increased by 122 percent from 36 to 80.

In light of the spike in Covid-19 cases, the number of PCR tests done per week has doubled with the average tests per day standing at 1 130 as compared to 559 from the week ending 24 July 2020. Seventy-five percent of the tests are being conducted by the public sector.

As a precautionary measure to curb the transmission of Covid-19 at food markets, which are characterised by crowding, poor sanitisation and lack of reticulated water, Cabinet resolved as follows:

That the restructuring of the vegetable markets bays in line with Covid-19 protocols be done in all vegetable markets;

That markets operate a six-day-cycle with mandatory closure for disinfection on the seventh day;

That all vendors at stalls should exercise extreme precaution like the use of sanitisers and consistent hand-washing with soap and running water; and

That a targeted Information Education Campaign be conducted to promote a new-normal among traders and customers at these markets. Government will also come up with measures to be enforced in other places where people converge in large numbers.

Cabinet has directed that all hospitals should admit patients without the pre-requirement for a prior Covid-19 test result and proceed to do a PCR test on admission.

To that end, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has already directed all public and private health institutions to establish Patient-Under-Investigation (PUI) zones to ensure that no patients are turned away.

In terms of preparedness, the nation is informed that Wilkins and United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) are now admitting mild to moderate cases.

The recruitment of nursing staff is already underway. In the same vein, His Excellency the President has appealed to the striking nursing personnel to return to work such that the loss of lives can be minimised.

Following recent developments in South Africa, where the time of storage of bodies has been reduced, Cabinet resolved to grant the Zimbabwe mission in South Africa a special waiver during the Covid-19 pandemic period to clear the repatriation of undocumented Zimbabwean bodies for burial back home on the basis of submitted affidavits from the chief/village head and relatives in Zimbabwe.

Cabinet is appealing for responsible behaviour and calls on all social media users to desist from posting or peddling falsehoods on Covid-19 that may cause despondency and alarm in the nation.

The public is reminded that the peddling of falsehoods is a punishable offence in terms of the Covid-19 regulations.

RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE 2018 AND 2019 ANNUAL REPORTS OF THE NATIONAL PEACE AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION
Vice President KCD Mohadi, as chairman of the Cabinet Committee on National Peace and Reconciliation, presented recommendations from the 2018 and 2019 annual reports of the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission, which were adopted by Cabinet.

The Vice President will present the recommendations to Parliament in due course as required by the Constitution. Highlights of the recommendations include the following:

That legislation and a code of conduct will be put in place to regulate the operations and conduct of all political parties;

That campaigning against one’s country shall be legislated at law and criminalised;

That existing laws shall be strengthened to include elements that foster tolerance, equality and social cohesion among Zimbabweans as well as prohibit hate speech by public officials, media houses and citizens in public spaces and social, print and electronic media platforms;

That the public should be educated on the Security Services’ complaints handling and feedback mechanisms;

That the development of the Witness Protection Bill be expedited; and

That historians will be resourced to document inclusive story lines that reframe and capture agreeable narratives about Zimbabwe’s history.

MOSI-OA-TUNYA DEVELOPMENT COMPANY
Cabinet considered and adopted a report on the operations of Mosi-Oa-Tunya Development Company, which was presented by the Minister of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry.

The company was formed in 2012, as an investment vehicle for the Government in the development of tourism facilities in Victoria Falls. It assisted in mobilising resources for the development of infrastructure and facilities for the hosting of the 2013 United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly, with initial focus being on the construction of an Integrated Tourism Resort comprising a 5 000-seater Convention Centre as the anchor project.

The 271-hectare piece of land earmarked for this development, which unfortunately failed to take off, has now been identified as the future growth node of Victoria Falls Town.

To operationalise developments on the 271-heactare land, Mosi-Oa-Tunya has developed a draft concept plan, which identifies the projects to be undertaken in the different zones as well as the infrastructure required to attract investment into the area.

Preparations for a comprehensive master plan covering 1 200 hectares in the Masuwe Estate land area are being spearheaded by an Inter-Ministerial Committee of officials and ZIDA. To give impetus to the Victoria Falls tourist and investment Special Economic Zone, Cabinet resolved to expedite processes for the completion of the master plan for the whole of Victoria Falls.

Currently, Mosi-Oa-Tunya Development Company is working with a private sector concern to conduct feasibility studies for the proposed Victoria Falls Integrated Tourism Park in Masuwe Estate. This will pave way for the development of bulk infrastructure facilities at the site. Projects earmarked for this phase include hotels, shopping malls, a medical facility, a convention centre and an upmarket golf course.

GAZETTING OF THE VICTORIA FALLS STOCK EXCHANGE
Cabinet advises, with pleasure, that Statutory Instrument 196 of 2020 which operationalises the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange was gazetted on Monday 3 August, 2020.

The Statutory Instrument outlines the exchange control regulations for investment and trading on the bourse.

This sets the process for the actualisation of the Victoria Falls financial hub Special Economic Zone on a firm footing.

2750 Tonnes Of “Improperly Stored” Ammonium Nitrate Explode In Beirut Shuttering The City

BBC

Buildings were shuttered and thousands of people injured

A large blast in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, has killed at least 70 people and injured more than 4,000 others, the health minister says.

Videos show smoke billowing from a fire, then a mushroom cloud following the blast at the city’s port.

Officials are blaming highly explosive materials stored in a warehouse for six years.

President Michel Aoun tweeted it was “unacceptable” that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate was stored unsafely.

An investigation is under way to find the exact trigger for the explosion. Lebanon’s Supreme Defence Council said those responsible would face the “maximum punishment” possible.

Hospitals are said to be overwhelmed and many buildings have been destroyed.

President Aoun declared a three-day mourning period, and said the government would release 100 billion lira (£50.5m; $66m) of emergency funds.

A BBC journalist at the scene reported dead bodies and severe damage, enough to put the port of Beirut out of action.

Prime Minister Hassan Diab called it a catastrophe and said those responsible must be held to account.

He spoke of a “dangerous warehouse” which had been there since 2014, but said he would not pre-empt the investigation.

Local media showed people trapped beneath rubble. A witness described the first explosion as deafening, and video footage showed wrecked cars and blast-damaged buildings.

“All the buildings around here have collapsed. I’m walking through glass and debris everywhere, in the dark,” one witness near the port told AFP news agency.

The blast was heard 240km (150 miles) away on the island of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean.

The explosion comes at a sensitive time for Lebanon, with an economic crisis reigniting old divisions. Tensions are also high ahead of Friday’s verdict in a trial over the killing of ex-Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005.

‘Glass going down from all over the building’

Hadi Nasrallah, eyewitness speaking to the BBC

I saw the fire, but I didn’t yet know there was going to be an explosion. We went inside. Suddenly I lost my hearing because apparently I was too close. I lost my hearing for a few seconds, I knew something was wrong.

And then suddenly the glass just shattered all over the car, the cars around us, the shops, the stores, the buildings. Just glass going down from all over the building.

Literally all over Beirut, people were calling each other from different areas kilometres away and they were experiencing the same thing: broken glass, buildings shaking, a loud explosion.

Actually we were shocked because usually when it happens, just one area will experience those happenings after an explosion, but this time it was all of Beirut, even areas outside of Beirut.

Sunniva Rose, journalist

“Driving into Beirut early evening when it was still light, it was absolute chaos. The streets were literally covered in glass. It’s hard for ambulances to go through – there’s bricks, cement slabs. Houses have collapsed.

“When I got to the port it had been closed off by the army. The army said to stay away in case there was a second explosion.

“There was still smoke going up into the sky late into the evening. The whole city was black. It was very hard to walk around, people were covered in blood. I saw an 86-year-old woman being treated by a doctor who had just run out of his home with a first aid kit. Cars were entirely smashed by rocks. These old-style houses with big cuts of rock had just fallen down on the street.

“It’s pandemonium in my own flat, all the glass is shattered. The extent of the damage is extreme. Even in a mall 2km away – the whole facade was shattered.”

Former ZINARA Boss Acquitted On Corruption Charges

Simon Taranhike

FORMER Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara) finance director, Mr Simon Taranhike, who was on bail pending appeal on his conviction and sentence after being jailed for effective 15 months on criminal abuse of office charges, was yesterday acquitted by the High Court.

High Court judge Justice Felistus Chatukuta sitting with Justice Pisirayi Kwenda set aside Mr Taranhike’s conviction and sentence passed by Harare magistrate Mr Hosea Mujaya.

Mr Mujaya had found Mr Taranhike guilty of abusing the Zinara fuel facility and authorising the issuance of 1 800 litres of petrol coupons without following due procedures.

Mr Mujaya initially sentenced him to 30 months in prison before suspending six months on condition of good behaviour.

Another nine months were suspended on condition that Mr Taranhike pays back the 1 800 litres of fuel to Zinara before December 31 last year.

His actions are said to have prejudiced his employer of fuel then worth $6 354. Mr Taranhike through his lawyer Advocate Thembinkosi Magwaliba, who was acting on Mrs Rekai Maphosa’s instructions, had appealed against conviction and sentence arguing that he was improperly convicted.

In the appeal Mr Taranhike argued that the State had failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt as required by the law.

He said the essential elements of criminal abuse of duty were not satisfied by the State.

The High Court accepted that the instructions to issue the fuel coupons had been given the board chairman, Engineer Michael Madanha.

Justices Chatukuta and Kwenda agreed that the board chairman Eng Madanha had instigated the corruption and Mr Taranhike could not at the same time impute criminal motive and conduct.

The High Court also noted that Mr Taranhike had simply communicated the instructions from the board chairman to a clerk in the transport department resulting in the issuance of the fuel coupons.

Allegations were that Mr Taranhike allegedly pressured Zinara’s transport clerk Dennis Jaricha to procedurally release the fuel coupons, ignoring protocol.

Mnangagwa To Inspect The Less Than 1km Resurfaced Part Of Beitbridge Harare Highway

State Media

President Emmerson Mnangagwa

Progress on the dualisation of the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge highway by local contractors comes under spotlight on Friday as President Mnangagwa inspects work.

The construction of the road recently attracted public scrutiny when an engineer from ZINARA shared a disappointing video on the progress of the road on social media.

Government has prioritised road rehabilitation as a key enabler in transforming Zimbabwe to an upper middle income society by 2030.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Joel Biggie Matiza yesterday said the President would assess the work being done by contractors.

“The President will be inspecting the development work, how far it has gone, the challenges being faced by the contractors among other things. There are five contractors, but tomorrow he will be visiting two of them before visiting the other three some other time,” said Minister Matiza.

The rehabilitation of the Harare-Beitbridge highway was initially set to be undertaken by foreign companies, but is now being done by local companies whose standard of work has so far impressed Government.

Finance and Economic Development Minister Prof Mthuli Ncube is on record saying the Government will prioritise the construction of both rural and urban roads as it develops the required infrastructure for expanding businesses.

Tagwirei Sanctioned For “Amassing Wealth In The Shortages-plagued Country.”

Financial Times

Kuda Tagwirei

The US has imposed sanctions on a close business ally of Zimbabwe’s president Emmerson Mnangagwa who was until this year the partner of global commodity trader Trafigura in the African nation.

Kudakwashe Tagwirei and his Sakunda group were blacklisted on Wednesday by the US Treasury, which said that the businessman used “opaque business dealings and his ongoing relationship with President Mnangagwa” to improperly amass wealth in the shortages-plagued country.

Both the opposition and figures within Mr Mnangagwa’s ruling Zanu-PF party have accused Mr Tagwirei of “state capture”, or systematic looting of public resources, while ordinary Zimbabweans are suffering from the collapse of the local currency and triple-digit inflation.

Mr Tagwirei has become popularly known as “Queen Bee” over the allegations of state capture, which Sakunda has denied.

“Tagwirei and other Zimbabwean elites have derailed economic development and harmed the Zimbabwean people through corruption,” Justin Muzinich, deputy secretary in the US Treasury, said.

The sanctions will prevent Americans from dealing with Mr Tagwirei or Sakunda. Mr Tagwirei did not respond to a request for comment on the sanctions designation.

Mr Tagwirei “has utilised his relationships with high-level Zimbabwean officials to gain state contracts and receive favoured access to hard currency, including US dollars”, the US Treasury said. “In turn, Tagwirei has provided high-priced items, such as expensive cars, to senior-level Zimbabwean government officials.”

Sakunda has also come under scrutiny over its role in a government agriculture subsidy drive under Mr Mnangagwa, with opposition lawmakers saying $3bn of state funds cannot be accounted for.
Trafigura, which has been a main lender to Zimbabwe by supplying fuel on credit, was in a joint venture with Sakunda until it cut ties this year in order to “bring improved clarity on Trafigura’s activities in the country”.

Trafigura had previously held a 49 per cent stake in the venture, Trafigura Zimbabwe. It bought out Sakunda’s controlling stake in the severing of ties. The trading group said on Wednesday that this deal was now complete.

The Financial Times revealed last year while Sakunda was still a partner of Trafigura that the IMF had warned Zimbabwean authorities on Sakunda’s favoured access to central bank resources, after the company received inflated payouts on government debts.

The payouts led to massive increases in the money supply, tanking the Zimbabwe dollar further and worsening the economic crisis.

Scrutiny of Mr Tagwirei’s interests beyond Sakunda has grown this year as he has been linked to a series of other business deals, including mines in the country.

Mr Mnangagwa’s government recently brutally suppressed protests against corruption planned for last week, including the detention of journalists, activists and opposition politicians.

He claimed in an address this week that “dark forces” inside and outside Zimbabwe were working against his government, and threatened to “flush out” his enemies.

65 People Arrested At An Illegal Pyramid Scheme Gathering

State Media

The group being rounded up by the police

At least 65 people were arrested last night at premises in Borrowdale, Harare, where a money pyramid scheme is allegedly being operated.

The suspects were arrested for violating Covid-19 regulations and taken to Harare Central Police Station for further investigations.

They were expected to pay deposit fines of between $200 and $500.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests.

“They were arrested in Borrowdale for violating Covid-19 regulations. They were found gathering and there was no social distancing.

“However police have also launched investigations to ascertain the legal status of the place where the suspects were arrested,” he said.

According to legal experts, a pyramid scheme is a fraudulent investment plan that can cost a lot of people their hard-earned savings. The pyramids promise huge and easy profits to “investors,” though they eventually collapse after the owners have benefited.

Pyramid marketers are known to seek out brand new victims almost from any place — at work, at churches and even by means of social groups or clubs.

But the pyramid schemes will ultimately fall without fail because the profits rely on signing up new members to the scheme and, eventually, every scheme runs out of fresh recruits.

The only people who may profit in a pyramid scheme are those at the very top of the pyramid.

Early this year, the quest for quick buck backfired for some people in Harare who lost large sums of money after being made to join pyramid schemes they were made to believe yielded 100 percent profit overnight.

The suspected conmen were brothers, Romeo (25) and Tinashe (29) Samhungu.

The pair allegedly devised a plan to swindle people using the pyramid scheme and promised investors very lucrative returns over very short periods of time, and for very little or no effort on the part of the investor.

COVID-19 Hits Zanu PF HQ

In compliance with the World Health Organisation protocols requiring institutions and individuals to be tested for Covid-19, ZANU PF directed that its staff members working at the Headquarters be tested.

The total number of personnel who underwent mandatory testing on 28 July 2020 is 154.

The Party is undertaking to hold periodic testing of its staff and leadership for Covid-19 in order to ensure that the working environment is safe. The Party HQ is being fumigated by health officers and members of staff have been asked to stay home during this process.

Dr David Parirenyatwa is supervising the fumigation process. The Party wishes those affected a quick recovery.

ZANU PF will now embark on a rigorous programme of testing districts and provincial staff for Covid-19 and fumigation of the offices soon.

Confirmed: Minister Tests Positive For Coronavirus

Dear Colleagues,
I hope you are well and healthy during these difficult times.

Unfortunately, the current news is not good, and our nation is in the midst of an alarming increase in COVID-19 cases. Infection rates are quite alarming and in the past week alone we’ve seen a sharp increase in the number of COVID-19 deaths.

l have also tested positive for COVID-19 and I have since self isolated. In times of a pandemic, privacy concerns must be balanced with efforts to protect others.

l have decided to be responsible and I am appealing to everyone l have been in contact with recently to go and get tested, self isolate and seek necessary help.

This is a painful journey, it separates you from your loved ones. Self isolation is not easy at all. The kids want to play with you but you cant entertain them.

I pray for everyone’s safety and well being. I do not wish this for anyone.

For those who are already affected, lets continue to pray together and hope for a better tomorrow. Our health will soon be restored.

Those who care for us are in a difficult situation, because when they call to check on us at times answering the phone is very difficult as one will be in a lot of pain.

Do not give up on us, send messages when the time is right we will respond.

Lets stick to the “3 Ws”:
Wear Your Mask. Wash Your Hands.

Watch Your Distance.
God bless us all.

Magistrate Apologises For Abusing MDC Alliance Trio |#Zimbabweanlivesmatter…

…I highlighted that to the court and the court apologised for everything that happened to my client, but eventually we then agreed that we’ll be coming back on the 26th August for trial…

By A Correspondent- Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights’ Obey Shava, who is representing the MDC Alliance trio, Joanna Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova has expressed concern over the continous revision of his clients’ trial dates arguing that the development posed security risks on the girls.

Speaking shortly after the court appearing of the trio at Harare magistrates court Wednesday morning, Shava said:

“When we last appeared on the 31st July 2020, the agreement had been that the trial date would be the 26 August 2020 as opposed to the 16th of September 2020. But the court had advised that it would be entertaining the trial on 26th September 2020. From our side, we had no issues with 26 September, we agreed with it and at the material time, the state equally agreed to have the matter rolled over to the 26th September for trial.

“All of a sudden, we received summons calling upon our clients to report at court today for the correction of an error which had occurred regards the trial date, so we came and advised that ….the court had pronounced it’s date as the 26th September as opposed to August 2020.

“But the main issue, the main worry which we highlighted to the court is that this attendance, today’s attendance was not necessary. It exposes our clients to risks, we know what happened on the 31st July when we appeared, we were detained illegally by the security forces.

“One of my clients was assaulted, and for the state to continuously summon my clients to appear unnecessarily before the court, is really unreasonable. It’s inhumane to say the least, so I highlighted that to the court and the court apologised for everything that happened to my client, but eventually we then agreed that we’ll be coming back on the 26th August for trial.”

OK Suspends Grand Challenge Jackpot Promotion Due To Coronavirus

OK Zimbabwe has announced the suspension of its OK Grand Challenge Jackpot Promotion citing the Covid-19 pandemic.

The OK Grand Challenge Jackpot Promotion is the biggest promotion in the country.

This year, however, has been unique due to the pandemic, which has resulted in restrictions to movement, production and supply chain disruptions as well as limited business hours as part of efforts to limit the spread of coronavirus.

“Unfortunately, this year we could not run our biggest annual promotion, the OK Grand Challenge Jackpot Promotion, because of disruptions caused by Covid-19,” said the group in a trading update for the quarter to June 30, 2020.

Since its inception three decades ago, the OK Grand Challenge Jackpot Promotion has grown bigger to become one of the major highlights in the retail sector and for consumers.

Last year, the group launched the promotion despite the economic challenges obtaining then.

According to the group, although Covid-19 has caused disruptions, its stores have remained stocked during the lockdown period.

Said OK: “Generally, however, the stores were reasonably stocked since the lockdown started on 30th March.”

As part of efforts to limit the spread of the virus, OK has implemented various measures such as providing personal protective equipment for staff, temperature checks for both staff and customers, limiting number of people into stores, maintaining social distance as well as engaging suppliers to ensure availability of merchandise for trading.

Meanwhile, the group reported a 32 percent decline in sales volume for the quarter to June 30, 2020 compared to same quarter in the prior year as the market grappled with low disposable incomes due to effects of Covid-19-The Herald

Decampaigning Zimbabwe To Be Criminalised, Cabinet Announces.

Cabinet has announced saying political parties will be placed under a uniform code of conduct, hate speech should be banned and campaigning against Zimbabwe criminalised.

Cabinet has approved the recommendations, but there are parliamentary processes to follow to effect any legal changes, starting with a presentation by committee chairman Vice President Kembo Mohadi to Parliament.

Speaking after yesterday’s Cabinet meeting, Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Minister Sithembiso Nyoni, standing in for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, said Cabinet adopted recommendations from the Cabinet Committee on National Peace and Reconciliation.
Highlights of the recommendations, she said, included:
That legislation and a code of conduct will be put in place to regulate the operations and conduct of all political parties;
That campaigning against one’s country shall be legislated at law and criminalised;

That existing laws shall be strengthened to include elements that foster tolerance, equality and social cohesion among Zimbabweans as well as prohibit hate speech by public officials, media houses and citizens in public spaces and social, print and electronic media platforms,
That the public should be educated on the security services’ complaints handling and feedback mechanisms.

In the past, the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association has called for the enactment of laws that bar anyone calling for sanctions and economic sabotage from contesting elections in the country and make it a serious crime.

Minister Nyoni said the Witness Protection Bill will soon be expedited and that historians will be resourced to document inclusive story lines that reframe and capture narratives about Zimbabwe’s history.

EFF Blasts Mliswa

Farai Dziva|
South Africa’s vibrant opposition party, Economic Freedom Fighters, has described Norton MP Temba Mliswa as a hypocrite.

EFF has vowed it will not be silenced by Mliswa and the like-minded.

Mliswa argued:
“To my brother @Julius_S_Malema I say please allow us the room to deal with our issues whilst you focus on your own. I’m very much against abductions and am for constitutionalism and sincerely believe that as a country we can ride this rough patch out.”

However, EFF stated that at one point came to South Africa to plead for assistance to remove former President Robert Mugabe.

Responding to Mliswa’s remarks, Julius Malema’s deputy Shivambu wrote:
“Aren’t you the same @TembaMliswa who frequented our offices in Johannesburg pleading for assistance with the Zimbabwe when President RG and the G40 faction isolated you? Don’t change principles for convenience.

We will speak against Mnangagwa in the same way we spoke on Pres RG,” said Shivambu.

Malema also tweeted: “We call for the removal of the Zimbabwean Embassy in SA until they restore the human rights in that country.

Failure to do so, we will prevent any official from the Zimbabwean government from participating in any gathering in SA until they respect ordinary Zimbabweans.”

Defiant Malema Blasts Mnangagwa

Farai Dziva|Firebrand EFF commander Julius Malema has refused to be silenced by widespread criticism from Zanu PF honchos.

On Monday Zanu PF bigwigs took turns to attack the South African opposition leader for lambasting Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Malema blasted Mr Mnangagwa for violating human rights.

Speaking to SABC News on Tuesday, Malema described the Zanu PF leader as a sellout.

“I will not change my position, Mnangagwa is a sellout. I want to make it clear that the man should stop terrorising hapless citizens.

Mnangagwa has reversed the gains of the liberation struggle so he is a sellout.

In actual fact he is worse than President Robert Mugabe,” said Malema.

HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES IN ZIMBABWE: ONE SA URGES MINISTER PANDOR TO ISSUE A DEMARCHE ON ZIMBABWEAN AMBASSADOR DAVID HAMADZIRIPI

Dear Minister Pandor

I write to strongly urging that a demarche be Issued on Zimbabwean Ambassador David Hamadziripi by the South African government in fight of the flagrant human rights abuses by the ZANU-PF led government in Zimbabwe.

The purpose of issuing a demarche is to demand a full explanation from the ambassador os to the unfolding human rights crisis in Zimbabwe and o commitment to ending these atrocities at once.

Disturbing reports of violence, intimidation
torture and detention without trial being carried out by the Zimbabwean government against citizens, opposition voices and journaists cannot go unchallenged.

Following Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s national address in which he sought to blame “western powers” for the country’s current woes the people of Zimbabwe are left in fear and without answers.

South Africa cannot turn a bind eye to such atrocities. Quiet diplomacy allows injustices to continue unabated. Now is the time for South Africa to regain its moral voice on the continent and denounce such actions perpetrated by the Zimbabwean government.

Until this point current African Union (AU) chairperson Cyril Ramaphosa has foiled in implementing the AU’s mandate “to promote and protect human rights on the continent” as per Article 3(h) of the Constitutive Act of the African Union.

As DIRCO Minister. I implore you to act decisively on behalf of the South African government and issue a demarche at once.

South Africa must champion and protect democrocy in the region and on the continent. The actions of the Mnangagwa government are that of a liberation movement that continues to oppress its people.
There is no time for ambiguity.

The South African government must speak out and condemn the violent, inhumane and undemocratic actions of the ZANU PF government in Zimbabwe and demand an end to such conduct.
I look forward to your response.

Magistrate Exposes Police Ineptitude

Police should have acted promptly over complaints that Delatfin Investments (Pvt) Limited director Felix Munyaradzi was involved in double allocation of residential stands in Sandton, Harare regional magistrate Mr Ngoni Nduna said yesterday.

He said the failure to act by the police was tantamount to misconduct as action should have been taken when the reports were initially made at Marborough Police Station last October.

He made the comments as he rejected Munyaradzi’s bail application on four counts of fraud.

“The police could be accountable for misconduct, as they kept the matter without action after it having been reported in 2019. Something should have been done over the said period,” he said.

Mr Nduna said there was a possibility that Munyaradzi could interfere with investigations since most of the evidence lies at his company.

Rejecting the application for bail, the magistrate said he considered the relationship between the accused and his employees, since receipts and records are with his employees.

“There is need to ring-fence that evidence and that can only be achieved by remanding the accused in custody.”

Mr Nduna remanded Munyaradzi in custody to August 8, 2020 for his routine remand.

The State led by Mr Michael Reza had opposed Munyaradzi’s bail application saying he was likely to abscond, as more than 50 complaints had been raised against him.

Mr Reza called the investigations officer Superintendent Misheck Ngorima, who expressed fears that Munyaradzi would interfere with investigations.

Munyaradzi, through his lawyer Wellington Pasipanodya, cross-examined Supt Ngorima and filed written submissions-The Herald

South African Parliament To Discuss Zim Human Rights Abuses

A South African opposition party leader has called for the Parliament of South Africa to debate the Zimbabwean Human Rights abuse issues.

In a letter to the speaker of parliament,  Vuyolwethu Zungula said the Zimbabwean issue was a matter of concern in SADC region.

Read his letter below:

The Speaker of Parliament: Hon T Modise.
Parliament Building, Room E118
Parliament Street
Cape Town

04 August 2020

Dear Honourable Speaker.

In light of the recent harsh realities of military police brutality experienced by Zimbabwean citizens amid anti -corruption protests, I hereby request that Parliament debates this matter urgently under the topic:

“Urgent debate: human rights violations in Zimbabwe amid anti-corruption protests”

The silence of the House on this matter might have dire consequences for South Africa, and further damning consequences for the people of Zimbabwe who are exposed to this injustice by the Zimbabwean Government.

As a SADC country and a global citizen, South Africa must have a vested interest in cross-border affairs that fuel the inequality and injustice of many people, which has a direct impact on the well- functioning of surrounding countries.

I am looking forward to your most urgent response.

Yours sincerely,

Vuyolwethu Zungula, MP

Zimbabwe is on fire but is the world listening?

By Thandekile Moyo

Police officers patrolling the streets orders a man pushing a handcart to go home on the first day of a 21 day lockdown on March 30, 2020 in Bulawayo.

There is a people’s movement on social media — #ZanuPFMustGo, that has been calling for an uprising to remove Zanu-PF from power for state capture and state failure. Zanu-PF has succeeded in capturing all institutions that are meant to uphold democracy.

Not only has Zanu-PF captured the state, it is incapable of running it. It has no capacity, no desire and no agenda to deliver that which governments are mandated to deliver. It has failed to effectively and efficiently allocate resources. Ours is a very small (population) resource-rich country that would be thriving were it better managed. Zanu-PF has failed to provide public goods and to facilitate the provision of merit goods. Under its watch, the economy has collapsed, the state has collapsed.

It is one thing to capture a state and run it efficiently, and another to capture the state only to run it to the ground, and then unleash armed forces on anyone who complains.

On Thursday last week, Zimbabwe Republic Police abducted a 22-year-old journalism student called Tawanda Muchehiwa. He was arrested with two of his cousins, Advent and Amandlenkosi Mathuthu, but bundled away into a separate car.

Later that same day, police raided the home of Tawanda’s uncle Mduduzi Mathuthu, a journalist and Editor of ZimLive newspaper, which has been exposing corruption-linked scandal after scandal by the Zimbabwean government. They claimed to be searching for “subversive materials”. They abducted Mduduzi’s sister Nomagugu Mathuthu and vowed to hold her illegally until her brother gave himself up.

After reports of the raid and abductions, the family’s lawyer Nqobani Sithole went to Bulawayo central police station to look for them. The police denied arresting them. Sithole persisted and asked the police to explain why the young men’s cars were parked at the police station, but the police continued to profess ignorance. Hours later, when police realised Sithole was unrelenting, they produced Advent and Amandlenkosi Mathuthu, but not Tawanda Muchehiwa.

They claimed Tawanda had escaped. The two cousins refuted that story and explained that Tawanda had been arrested with them, but they had no idea where he had been taken.

The next morning Sithole filed a habeas corpus, an urgent application asking the judge to order the police to produce Tawanda. The application was granted the next day, this past Saturday — and police were ordered to produce Tawanda within 72 hours.

Zimbabweans were outraged. Why would the judge give his abductors three more days with him? Later that night, Tawanda’s abductors dumped him 3km from his home, severely tortured. He was taken to the hospital where he suffered renal failure, indicative of more harm having been done to him internally, possibly through poisoning.

A few months ago, Zimbabwe’s government abducted three women from the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and tortured them for days before dumping them. In 2019, they abducted Peter Magombeyi, a doctors’ union leader, for leading a doctors’ strike for better salaries and hospital equipment. They kept him for days and dumped him after torturing him.

These are just a few of the Zimbabwean government’s victims of enforced disappearance and torture, both crimes against humanity. The Zimbabwean government has been committing heinous crimes with impunity against anyone who speaks out against them.

Over the weekend they arrested hundreds of unarmed civilians for peacefully protesting against them in the 31 July protests. These arrestees included MDC spokesperson Fadzai Mahere and one of this year’s.

Tagwirei under US sanctions: What does this mean for the tycoon?

newZWire

Now that he is designated on the sanctions list, any property or interests that Tagwirei or Sakunda have in the US, or that is in the possession of any American, must be blocked and reported to the US government.

This means that any international transfers of money to and from Tagwirei or Sakunda can no longer be channeled through the United States, which handles a significant proportion of global banking transactions. Banks that deal with him risk being fined. It will be tough for Tagwirei or Sakunda to open international bank accounts and transfer money, as those banks, even if they are not American, can be fined.

In April 2019, Standard Charterd Bank plc was fined US$18 million by the US government for handling transactions for Zimbabwean state-owned firms and sanctioned individuals. Barclays plc was fined US$2.5 million for transactions in handled between between 2008 and 2013.

CBZ was also fined heavily for handling transactions on behalf of ZB Bank, then on the sanctions list. Tagwirei is said to now hold a stake in the bank.

American citizens are also now banned from having any dealings with either Tagwirei or his company.

Sakunda is involved in the commodities business and logistics, and sanctions could hurt its capacity to trade.

CHRA Warns Of A Serious Humanitarian Catastrophe

The Combined Harare Residents Association condemns machinations to replace a democratically elected council by an appointed commission under the pretext of uprooting corruption in the Harare City Council.

CHRA condemns all forms of corruption and graft and welcome efforts by the state to fight corruption in our local authorities but that does not warrant imposing a commission as this is a serious threat to representative democracy, a move that is aimed to throw citizens to the periphery of local governance.

Any attempt to the abuse of Section 80 (1)(a) and (b) of the Urban Councils Ac 29:15 by the Minister of Local Government through imposing a Commission to run the City of Harare is misplaced and has no place in any democratic society.

Local government is the closest government to the people, the idea and thinking of replacing an elected council that is accountable to the people by an appointed commission has serious implications on accountability

Historically, appointed Commissions have not improved service delivery but have been catalysts of stripping the City of Harare’s assets, fuelling grand corruption and led to total collapse of service delivery to the extent of losing lives.

CHRA has a well-documented narrative of the collateral damage that is highlighted in a snapshot below;

·         Chanakira Commission 1999-2001; Clandestinely recruited 1235 employees and promoted people who were connected to it.

·         Makwavarara Commission 2004-2006; Facilitated the ZINWA takeover of Harare Municipal Water Supply that saw total collapse of water supplies and sewer reticulation, thousands of people died of cholera during her era; recommended the devastating Operation Murambasvina and Ms Makwavarara used ratepayers’ money for her luxuries at the expense of service delivery and illegally bought a council house in Borrowdale for a paltry $780 million instead of $5,5 billion (Zimbabwe Dollars).

·         Michael Mahachi Commission 2006-2007; Council lost vast tracts of land in a US $90 million botched Airport Road deal with Augur Investments and Sewer reticulation plants collapsed.

A closer look to persons who were appointed to be Commissioners in the past clearly shows that most of them were losing candidates in elections or the ruling party apologists and the level of corruption during the periods of commissions was astonishing.

The renewed interest to take over town house comes at a time when the City has signed US$868 water deals.

CHRA warns of a serious humanitarian catastrophe in the event that a Commission takes over the City of Harare, especially at a time the country is under siege from the ravaging and notorious COVID 19 pandemic.

Govt To Criminalise Speaking To Failures By The Govt.

Kembo Mohadi

CABINET has adopted measures that shall soon make it criminal for Zimbabweans “to campaign against their own country.”

The measures were presented to Cabinet by Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on National Peace and Reconciliation, Vice President Kembo Mohadi as part of recommendations from the 2018 And 2019 Annual Reports of the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission.

Presenting the 27th Post-Cabinet press briefing, the Minister of Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Dr Sithembiso Nyoni, said the recommendations shall soon be presented to parliament as required by law.

Among the recommended measures include the regulation of the operations of political parties.

“Legislation and a Code of Conduct will be put in place to regulate the operations and conduct of all political parties, campaigning against one’s country shall be legislated at law and criminalised,” Dr Nyoni said.

Under the recommended measures, hate speech by public officials would also be legislated against.

“Existing laws shall be strengthened to include elements that foster tolerance, equality and social cohesion among Zimbabweans as well as prohibit hate speech by public officials, media houses and citizens in public spaces and social, print and electronic media platforms,” she said.

Tagwirei Slapped With Sanctions

Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated Kudakwashe Regimond Tagwirei (Tagwirei) for providing support to the leadership of the Government of Zimbabwe, as well as Sakunda Holdings for being owned or controlled by Tagwirei.

Today’s action corresponds with the second anniversary of the Zimbabwean government’s violent crackdown against its citizens who were protesting flawed government elections and the delayed results of the election, which resulted in the deaths of at least six civilians on August 1, 2018.

“Tagwirei and other Zimbabwean elites have derailed economic development and harmed the Zimbabwean people through corruption,” said Deputy Secretary Justin G. Muzinich. “The United States supports the economic well-being of the Zimbabwean people and will target repressive and corrupt acts and graft by Zimbabwean politicians and their financiers.”

KUDAKWASHE REGIMOND TAGWIREI and SAKUNDA HOLDINGS

Tagwirei is a Zimbabwean businessman with longstanding associations to the ruling party in Zimbabwe and high-level Government of Zimbabwe officials, including the current President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa (Mnangagwa), and First Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, who were listed in the Annex to Executive Order (E.O.) 13288 in March 2003, and the Annex to E.O. 13391 in November 2005, and remain on OFAC’s List of Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons (SDN List).

Tagwirei has utilized his relationships with high level Zimbabwean officials to gain state contracts and receive favored access to hard currency, including U.S. dollars. In turn, Tagwirei has provided high priced items, such as expensive cars, to senior-level Zimbabwean government officials.

Since former Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe’s 2017 departure, Tagwirei used a combination of opaque business dealings and his ongoing relationship with President Mnangagwa to grow his business empire dramatically and rake in millions of U.S. dollars.

Additionally, Tagwirei is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and founding director of Zimbabwe-based Sakunda Holdings. As CEO, Tagwirei is responsible for the overall strategy and direction of the company, as well as developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including regulators and clients.

Government audit reports prompted a 2019 parliamentary inquiry into whether public funds were misappropriated, revealing the government had failed to account for about $3 billion disbursed under the Command Agriculture program, a state farm subsidy championed by President Mnangagwa and largely financed by Sakunda Holdings.

Tagwirei was designated pursuant to E.O. 13469 for having materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial, material, logistical, or technical support for, or goods or services in support of, the Government of Zimbabwe, any senior official thereof, or any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to E.O. 13288, E.O. 13391, or E.O. 13469. Sakunda Holdings was designated pursuant to E.O. 13469 for being owned or controlled by, or for having acted or purported to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, Tagwirei.

Additionally, OFAC concurrently removed sanctions on the recently-deceased John Bredenkamp (Bredenkamp) and 20 companies owned or controlled by Bredenkamp: Alpha International (Private) Ltd., Breco (Asia Pacific) Ltd., Breco (Eastern Europe) Ltd., Breco (South Africa) Ltd., Breco (U.K.) Ltd., Breco Group, Breco International, Breco Nominees Ltd., Breco Services Ltd., Corybantes Ltd., Echo Delta Holdings Ltd., Kababankola Mining Company, Masters International Ltd., Masters International, Inc., Piedmont (UK) Limited, Raceview Enterprises, Scottlee Holdings (Pvt) Ltd., Scottlee Resorts, Timpani Ltd., and Tremalt Ltd. This individual and these entities were previously designated under E.O. 13469 in 2008.

ZIMBABWE SANCTIONS PROGRAM

Beginning with E.O. 13288, “Blocking Property of Persons Undermining Democratic Processes or Institutions in Zimbabwe,” in March 2003, the U.S. Department of the Treasury has used its authorities to identify, disrupt the activities of, and promote accountability for persons who commit human rights abuses, engage in corruption, or undermine democratic processes or institutions in Zimbabwe.

Treasury joins the U.S. Department of State in urging the Zimbabwean government to take meaningful steps towards creating a peaceful, prosperous, and politically vibrant Zimbabwe, rather than using public resources to blame Zimbabwe’s ills on parties other than its corrupt elite and the institutions they abuse for their personal benefit.

Today’s actions continue to demonstrate the importance of Treasury’s sanctions authorities and the United States’ ongoing commitment to supporting a transparent and prosperous Zimbabwe.

Treasury’s authorities in relation to Zimbabwe are publicly available, and Treasury strongly encourages those with questions on the reach or extent of those authorities, or the criteria for the listing or delisting of individuals or entities, to access Treasury’s page dedicated to the Zimbabwe sanctions program.

As a result of Treasury’s designation, all property and interests in property of this individual and entity that are in the United States or in the possession or control of U.S. persons must be blocked and reported to OFAC. OFAC’s regulations generally prohibit all dealings by U.S. persons or within (or transiting) the United States that involve any property or interests in property of blocked or designated person.

DA Says Ramaphosa Has Failed To “Show True Statemanship” On The Zimbabwean Crisis

By A Correspondent- The Democratic Alliance, an opposition party in South Africa has urged that country’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa and the leaders in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region to rebuke Zimbabwe’s president Emmerson Mnangagwa for human rights violations.

We present DA’s statement in full below.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) calls for President Cyril Ramaphosa and Southern African Development Community (SADC) leaders to prevent, on a major scale, the erosion of human rights in Zimbabwe and any further decline in reputation and investment risk to the entire region.

The DA has deep concerns over recent alleged human rights violations in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has failed the test for tolerance for the opposition and respect for the rule of law.

The propagated rumours of destructive forces within our neighbouring country taking bribes, and the subsequent announcement of the curfew and restriction on movement came as little surprise. When armed forces flexed muscle around Bulawayo and Harare it was clear that not only were the cities going to be eerily quiet, but the voices of the opposition were going to be oppressed.

The silence from President Ramaphosa, in his capacity as President of both South Africa and the African Union (AU), on this matter is of great concern as he has a duty to send a clear and stern warning to the Zimbabwean government to exercise restraint and to remind it the international community is watching.

President Ramaphosa has lost a great opportunity to show true statesmanship. It is therefore important internally, regionally and internationally that he makes an urgent, public statement condemning the human rights abuses and oppression of peaceful protest.

Zimbabwe has seen its fair share of trouble. It just about managed to survive the Mugabe-era of transitional justice that led to the collapse of the economy, harmed food security and put the quality of life of the average Zimbabwean into steep decline. The country might not survive President Mnangagwa using the cover of the Covid-19 pandemic as an opportunity to increase his power without fear of being called out by any of his peers.

Zimbabwe, and the whole SADC region, cannot afford for President Ramaphosa to sit on the sidelines as he is prone to do in South Africa with the likes of Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. As AU chair he has an obligation to ensure stability in the entire region and cannot turn a blind eye when people are suffering gross injustices.

The DA urges Presidents Ramaphosa and Mnangagwa to engage with SADC partners, and that:

  1. All leaders of the SADC region must condemn all forms of human rights abuses;
  2. SADC should call for a cessation of all human rights abuses on individuals and political parties as well as the unfair restriction of their rights. This should be monitored by a SADC task team;
  3. SADC leaders should assist the Zimbabwean government to negotiate a mediation agreement until the next elections; and
  4. South Africa should institute measurables and sanctions against Zimbabwe unless certain terms are reached and abided by.

The DA on its part will partner with all parties in the various SADC countries that have democracy, human rights and prosperity in their manifesto to be more productive and active in the region.

As AU Chair and president of a SADC country, President Ramaphosa cannot turn a blind eye to the atrocities plaguing our neighbouring citizens once again. This situation requires urgent intervention, as is the President’s mandate. The longer the President remains a spectator, the worse the situation will be, and those atrocities will be added to his tally.

1. Today marks the 48th day since we withdrew our labour.
2. As ZINA, we welcome the appointees to the positions of substantive Minister of Health and Child Care as well as Permanent Secretary for the same Ministry.
3. It is our hope that the two appointees have been briefed on the situation prevailing in the health sector and what has led to the impasse between health workers and their employer.
4. Our reasonable demands are in the public domain. We look forward to being engaged on these on the basis of mutual respect, where our constitutional and labour rights to a fair wage and not to work in unsafe conditions are respected.
5. Further, we look forward to having our demands acknowledged and met. As we have indicated before, we are unable to return back to work until this has been done.
6. Considering the urgency of the situation, we expect an urgent intervention to resolve the impasse.
7. Until the above has been done, we reiterate our position- NO USD, NO WORK! NO PPE, NO WORK!

ZANU PF Youth Say Julius Malema Is Far Too Short Of Their Standard.

Tendai Chirau

ZANU PF Acting Deputy Secretary for Youth Affairs Tendai Chirau says EFF’s Julius Malema is under qualified to comment on the internal affairs of Zimbabwe.

Speaking during a Press Conference held at the Party Headquarters today, Chirau said Malema should shelve his concerns to his own backyard where he must protect the Zimbabwean lives he professes to care about.

“The ZANU PF Youth League is resolutely unshaken by the unwarranted vitriolic onslaughts on the integrity of the ruling Party by Economic Freedom Fighters EFF leader Julius Malema, who is himself, struggling for significance in his native South Africa and therefore lacks any qualifications to authoritatively comment on Zimbabwean issues,” Chirau said.

“Zimbabwe is a sovereign state with a democratically elected government under the leadership of His Excellency Cde E.D Mnangagwa and as such, will not brook any interference from puppets and their handlers. By our standards, Mr Malema is a puny, absolute political nonentity whose nostalgia for his wasted glory days with the ANC has pushed him into bed with the equally disgraced G40 clique of charlatans, whose narcissistic penchant for publicity is well documented. It is no secret that he is the latest, albeit ill-chosen, front for the furtherance of self-exiled cabal’s counter-revolutionary pursuits.”

Chirau challenged Malema to protect Zimbabwean lives during xenophobic attacks in his own backyard if he is truly concerned about them.

“If Malema is truly more concerned about Zimbabwean lives that the Zimbabwean government, as he would have his gullible audience believe, then he should be at the forefront in defending them from the poisonous culture of targeted xenophobia endemic in his own country. He should be organizing his noisy demonstrations to that end. That is precisely where his energies are more relevant.”

Chirau added that ZANU PF has had Zimbabwean lives at heart as seen through the sacrifices of the gallant sons and daughters of Zimbabwe during the liberation struggle.

“ZANU PF has, from its very foundation, been at the heart of Zimbabwean lives. By waging a bitter and protracted liberation struggle, wherein patriot cadres made the capital sacrifice, losing precious lives and limbs in the process, the revolutionary Party proved its fullest commitment to Zimbabwean lives,” the Youth League leader said.

“Under the current Second Republic, captained by the shrewd Cde E.D Mnangagwa, the ZANU PF led administration has embarked on various pro-people economic policies, such as vision 2030, which are steadily yielding fruit.”

Temba Mliswa And Linda Masarira Praise Chiwenga’s Appointment As Health Minister For His Military Background.

263chat

Norton Member of Parliament, Temba Mliswa together with opposition leader, Linda Masarira have hailed the appointment of Vice President (VP), Constantino Chiwenga as Health Minister saying military discipline characteristic with his background will come in handy as far as bringing order to the portfolio is concerned.

This is despite wide uproar to Chiwenga’s appointment on social media with the general public condemning the move.

Speaking on the micro-blogging site, Twitter, Mliswa congratulated President Emmerson Mnangagwa for appointing Chiwenga expressing optimism that the appointment will address the Ministry bedevilled with issues.

“I would like to congratulate His Excellency on the appointment of VP Chiwenga as Minister of Health and Child Care. The appointment is astute as the sector, bedevilled with issues, will benefit from a man with military discipline in the running of administrations,” wrote Mliswa.

LEAD President, Masarira also echoed the sentiment saying the Ministry of Health and Child Care needs to be handled firmly just as one would handle the Defence Forces.

“At this moment the Ministry of Health and Child Care is the most pivotal ministry, it has to be handled firmly just as one would handle the Defence Forces. VP Chiwenga‘s appointment should transform and rehabilitate the health sector. I will not allow my emotions to cloud my reasoning,” wrote Masarira.

However, Chiwenga’s 2018 firing of medical practitioners who had engaged in an industrial action protesting over poor remuneration is making some individuals cringe from his appointment.

“VP Chiwenga once fired all hospitals Nurses and doctors for demanding better working conditions. He gets his medical treatment in China, he is now the Minister of Health and Child Care the same guy who said doctors are an occupation, not a profession,” said social media influencer Wellence Mujuru.

While United Kingdom-based lawyer, Dr Alex Magaisa said, “The Ministry of Health is a pit full of Black Mambas, with potential to cause political death. Did Rtd General Constantino Chiwenga jump in or was he pushed? A man who regularly flies to China for private treatment now oversees a decrepit public healthcare system he doesn’t use!”

SDA Pastor Blasts His Church For Tolerating ZANU PF

Pastor Khethelo Mazibuko

Popular Seventh-Day Adventist Church South African Pastor Khethelo Mazibuko has spoken about the injustices in Zimbabwe and pointed out that the SDA church in Zimbabwe has not rebuked deeply corrupt SDA members but instead worship with them.

Writing on Facebook Pastor Mazibuko who has a number of viral clips on his teachings about Family Life said:

As we pray, protest and work for the Liberation of our people in Zimbabwe, we must realise that ZANU-PF, MDC, MDC-T have no place in the future of a prosperous Zimbabwe.Together with these parties, Churches like the Seventh-day Adventist Church must be exiled for 70yrs (Jer 29) for their complicity in the corruption. There is a cloud of deeply corrupt Seventh-day Adventist Members who surround the Zim Government. They have monopoly on Petroleum, Agriculture and Mining. The Conferences, Unions in Zimbabwe have said nothing to rebuke these members but instead worship them.As such, the church has been complicit and it too must be stripped of its Credentials in a new Zimbabwe. No Conference, Union Leader of the Church in Zimbabwe can preach on the Integrity of Daniel, Nehemiah, Joseph and Esther…for they (Church Leaders) spoke no truth to power but chose self preservation. As in Apartheid South Africa, the SDA Church always falls on the wrong side of History where Oppression and Human Rights are concerned.

While the Pastor did not mention any names, popular Tycoon Kuda Tagwirei who is said to be a Zanu Pf benefactor is a member of the Seventh-Day Adventists and people who commented on the post speculated that the pastor was referring to her.

As we pray, protest and work for the Liberation of our people in Zimbabwe, we must realise that ZANU-PF, MDC, MDC-T have…

The Church is yet to comment on Mazibuko’s sentiments.

Proof: A Loaf Of Bread In Zimbabwe Costs $17 USD!

Zim Price Check

A loaf of bread in Zimbabwe would cost the average American New Yorker about US$17 (or 17.0448377581) according to our calculations. This is based on what Zimbabweans earn and how much they spend on bread. This article was inspired by a Tweet from the Namibian Actor Maria Nepembe. The tweet seems to have been deleted, probably after she discovered her “mistake”.

I was in Zim last year and bread costs like 10USD

What the tweet said.
The price for a standard white loaf of bread in Zimbabwe is not US$10. The price actual price varies from around 11 ZAR or $US0.80 to about US$1.00 for special seed loaves. In general one can expect to pay a retail price of $0.90 for a loaf of bread. But the truth is if you are an average Zimbabwean bread does feel expensive when you are buying it. There is a reason for this.

It’s all about income stupid!
There is a reason people in Zimbabwe feel like their bread is expensive. It’s all about income. If we factor in what Zimbabweans earn and what they pay for bread those feelings start to make sense. In reality, a New Yorker can expect to pay about US$2.64 for the same loaf of bread if they are buying it from their nearest bakery. This is more twice the price of bread in Zimbabwe.

The tempting conclusion here is that bread is cheaper in Zimbabwe than New York. That would be false as it is based on the flawed logic that Zimbabweans and New Yorkers earn the same. Obviously this is not the case. While bread appears to be cheaper in Zimbabwe, Zimbabweans are spending a higher proportion of their income to buy the same loaf even though it appears priced cheaper.

What they earn
According to Investopedia in New York:

The Median Income Household is $57 782 while
The Mean Income Household is $93,196 and
Per Capita Income is $35,761
We didn’t want to be unkind to Zimbabweans here so we opted to use the Median Household income otherwise we would end up with heart-attack inducing results if we chose the mean. Also these figures are from 2019. Meanwhile for Zimbabwe ZIMSTAT had the following statistics from 2017 (we didn’t want to fall into the exchange rate trap debate) and again we were being kind as Zimbabweans were earning more during the same period compared to what they are earning now. So according to ZIMSTAT we had the following figures:

US$ 2 401 before transfers and
US$2 712 after transfers
Per Capita GDP US$1 602
Buying a loaf of bread
When a Zimbabwean household buys a loaf of bread it means they are spending:

0.8/2712*100

That is: 0.02949852507% or about 0.03% of their annual income on that single loaf even if it’s cheaper.

In comparison a New Yorker would be spending:

2.64/57782*100

That is:0.00456889688% or about 0.005% of their annual income on each loaf that they buy even though it’s nominally expensive.

Let maths do the talking
In order for a New Yorker to feel the same way as a Zimbabwean feels when they buy a loaf of bread they would have to spend 0.02949852507% of their annual income on a single loaf of bread:

: 0.02949852507% of $57 782

That is: 17.0448377581 or US$17.04

Zimbabwe At The Precipice As Illegal Arrests Continue

Zimbabwe at the precipice as illegal arrests, abductions, and torture increase before and after 31st July National Demonstration
Zimbabweans called for an expression of national disaffection through a countrywide demonstration which was successfully held on 31st July 2020 against endemic corruption by the Harare regime. The demonstration was very peaceful as Zimbabweans shutdown the country and were not provoked by the state’s show of force through widespread deployment of the heavily armed military and the police. Tragically, the peaceful Zimbabweans who managed to conduct themselves maturely and in an unprecedented show of unity were soon victims of police, army, and Zanu PF vigilante brutality. There are numerous cases of human rights violations ranging from illegal arrests to torture as this expose will show.

Prior to the demonstrations that were called by the convener of the 31st July protests Mr. Jacob Ngarivhume, the country and the world witnessed not only his illegal arrest but the subsequent illegal arrest and detention of award-winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono who had exposed corruption surrounding the Covid-19 PPEs purchase by the Minister of Health Mr. Obadiah Moyo. On the day of the demonstration, renowned writer Tsitsi Dangarembga, MDC Alliance Spokesperson Fadzai Mahere, activist Julie Barnes, and journalist Mduduzi Mathuthu’s nephew Tawanda Mucheiwa were arrested and illegally detained for allegedly inciting public violence. In order to intimidate organizers of the 31st July protest, the Zimbabwe Republic Police issued a public appeal and interest in the following activists: Makomborero Haruzivishe, Godfrey Kurauone, Ostallos Siziba, Job Sikhala, Promise Mkwananzi, Denford Ngadziore, Allan Moyo, Obey Sithole, Orbert Masaraure, Jimmy Kunaka, Peter Mutasa, Robson Chere, Stephen Chuma, and Godfrey Tsenengamu.

Tawanda Mucheiwa who lives in Bulawayo was abducted, tortured, and illegally detained. The Zimbabwe 3 (Cecilia Chimbiri, Joan Momembe, and Netsai Marova) who had reported to Harare Magistrate court for routine remand hearing were sexually harassed by security forces on their way to court. Tawanda Mucheiwa has reported that his abductors identified themselves as the “Feret” team which is a shadowy security apparatus that includes Law and Order, Central Intelligence Organization, and Military Intelligence officers. Activist Takunda Madzana who lives in Bulawayo was also abducted, tortured, and dumped in the middle of nowhere.
A cause for concern is the widespread immunity enjoyed by the security forces and the impunity with which they execute the unconstitutional, barbaric, and illegal acts that are sanctioned by Zanu PF political leaders who held press conferences one after another and labeled opposition activists terrorists and urged their supporters to defend themselves physically. Deputy Minister Victor Matemadanda and politiburo member Patrick Chinamasa encouraged the illegal acts. Currently, numerous activists are in hiding for fear of abductions, illegal detention, and torture. As a result, 31st July Movement Spokesperson Job Sikhala has called for more protests between 10 August and 15th August 2020 geared towards condemning the rampant human rights abuses that the state has been guilty of during the clampdown.

FULL TEXT: Kuda Tagwirei And His Sakunda Holdings Placed On US Sanctions List

Washington – Today, the U.S.

Kaizer Chiefs Suspend Manager For Breaching Lockdown Regulations

Kaizer Chiefs have suspended their football manager Bobby Motaung after a video was leaked online when he was breaking lockdown rules.

Motaung was captured in the video at a party with his colleagues, a breach of lockdown rules imposed by the South African government to curb the spread of coronavirus.

In a statement, Chiefs said they have placed their football manager on suspension until August 31 while they carry out investigations on the matter.

“As part of our policies and continuous process of monitoring the public conduct of our members, players, and staff, Kaizer Chiefs has decided to summarily suspend Football Manager Bobby Motaung,” Chiefs said.

“This is a result of a number of videos circulating on social media wherein the Football Manager is seen taking part in festivities during what looks like the lockdown period. The Club has been involved in the internal processes of investigating his conduct, which led to the decision to suspend him.”

The suspension is with immediate effect and Motaung will not be allowed to meet or travel with the team. The directive means he will miss, at least, the first games on the season restart this weekend.

“Subsequently, the Club would like to confirm that Bobby Motaung is suspended with immediate effect up to and including 31 August 2020. He is not allowed to accompany the team to any training session or scheduled matches,” the statement continues.

“Even though he has tested negative on four occasions for Covid-19 during the club’s mandatory tests, he is ordered to remain home and self-quarantine during this time.

“This is in line with the rules and regulations of the Club according to the protocols that we have put in place.

“The Club reaffirms its stance to all stakeholders of our commitment to play an exemplary role to assist in the fight against the spread of the pandemic.”-Soccer 24

BREAKING- Govt To Enact Legislation To Criminalise Anyone Who “De-campaigns” Zim

“The Candid Truth Is That We Are Not Safe Anymore”

The candid truth is that we are now hanging by a thread; we are on our own now. It is no longer a matter of if, but when, and when that happens will we be ready to face the tide, or even the Hague? Those holding the keys to the fortresses and armoury are our own, or are they still? Until when because these things change at ungodly hours, we are not safe anymore.

Daylight pledges of loyalty is talk, and talk is cheap. Brown envelopes are real currency, and tax free too. The blood of kinsmen folk will not remain thick enough, cursed be the brown envelope.

But then again, everyone deserves their reward. Until when, those in barracks are mothers and fathers with working consciences too. They know too well money is tastier with good sleep at night.

How did we get here, Comrades? What is it that made us believe we held an inherent title to dictate court decisions, to decide which project goes to tender and which one does not? How did we tell ourselves that this rot will live to see all the days of our lives without reproach, what got into us to use our last arsenals and line of defence against hungry, unarmed “terrorists” who depend on nothing but fancy legalese in parliament and stones on the street?

These are not terrorists; they are the men and women winning the minds and votes of our supporters as we shoot Mbare vendors.

Mr President, your hast national address yesterday is evidence that you are shaken, the citizens are encouraged to forge ahead even harder. It’s a temporary time of the people’s resolve and power. Forget the clownish Sikhala, fix eyes on the simple people.

Some of us are not so old to not care about the next 20 years. Our younger children are still in high school and need better education and employment opportunities as nearer to us as possible before we too answer the call of death. We too want security for what we have built by hook or crook since the end of the liberation war.

Could we not have taken enough care and foresight to leave the gravy train when we were still perceived as innocent? Comrades we are under attack from inside and outside. They say we lost the 2018 elections, but we ourselves know very well we are losing the legitimacy war by letting down our dwindling party numbers.

We are losing a diplomatic war by the continued use of snipers and canons on unarmed citizens. We are losing the democratic highground by the wanton arrest of opposition members and journalists who expose corruption. We are losing the economic war, yes we are.

The corruption busting cause was hugely thrown in disarray when Gono on a Saturday night protested Magaisa that citizens did NOT carry the farm mechanisation cost, denying again by a long article on Sunday, only to let down his guard on Tuesday and say it was funded by government, which survives on taxpayer’s money!

Gideon Gono worked hard to keep the country running in his time, he was a victim of our imprudent system and ruthless patronage.

The onslaught on us has turned up the cadence because this is now a burning civic and human rights war which resonates with all the somebody’s and nobody’s on the international arena. We are in trouble comrades. Putin watched Mugabe fall, he will watch us too.

Comrades, we are losing the political war too, July 31 was not an opposition thrust. It was a civil initiative which gained opposition traction because of resonance. These are real issues even to our own members.

Our supporters do not condone the perpetuation of these many a vice, they too are worried and hurt by commonplace corruption. They too are being beaten by the indiscriminate police button sticks and the gun butts of the KGIV boys in the streets while they try to eke a living.

Our own members are good numbers of the vendors on the street corners, our own party members have no food in their homes too, our own party members are being kicked off the land by bigwigs in this room with multiple offer letters to large tracts of arable land which is being used for weekend braais in the midst of corona and hunger.

Nobody is safe from the economic onslaught, nobody. Today our technocrats are using their skills to the benefit of the industries of other countries which we termed our enemies. No, we are now our own enemies.

We are angry that we do not interfere in the affairs of other countries, this is true, and in that vein we expect other countries to also leave us alone.

Yet, comrades, we gave Malema and others a reason to speak so they cannot keep quiet. By burdening social services in their countries due to the migration of thousands our citizens into their countries daily running away from our failure of governance, we gave them fodder on so many pedestals to attack us. We lost that highground on Pan-African and even moral pedestals. We lost.

A next door neighbour, who is feeding my children every day as they run from the never-ending hunger in my house, has every right to question my capacity as a leader, solution maker and provider.

We will survive a few more attacks, but at the end of it all we will lose to the people. It is becoming a painful reality that we are fast becoming a run-away head of the train without the containers behind.

The 2008 fiasco should have taught us that maybe we took lightly the loyalty our members have displayed since 1980, and our own over-perceived measure of the ability to harvest the sway vote. We forgot that these were no longer loyal and sway votes, we as the fishes had outgrown the water pools which are the masses, fear reigned amongst them.

We failed to deal with corruption, ZACC was a smoke screen and did not measure to the rot in our midst. Chivayo, Undenge, Mupfumira and Chris Kuruneri could not have possibly destroyed the economy of a whole Zimbabwe between two decades.

Comrades we failed to leave the political battles bout for bout with the opposition in the political arena alone and in fact, we roped in the courts to fight our battles.

Almost the majority of the opposition leadership and journalists are on remand for all sorts of charges. Human Rights lawyers are making names for themselves, our punches are rewarding them.

We exposed our Chief Justice to global condemnation and attack by decreeing that orders by independent, thinking and impartial judges must be seen and approved by their court heads. Our judiciary became a laughing stock as this decree had to be changed thrice within days, this was a costly blunder.

As it stands, what will the head of court do when he or she “sees” the court order before a judge can deliver it before a court? Of what practical end does it serve if he or she will not change anything on the judgment? Is that not a bureaucratic lumber? Or will the head of court change only the font and colour of the judgment, is that it? Our judiciary lost its own impartiality trial.

Comrades, I speak for many of our own. We are now on borrowed time and we are not doing much to slow down the train destined for crash. The least we could have done was to cut the umbilical cord from the way of doing things of the First Republic.

We entered the scene to much celebration and fresh hope, after holding the old man captive and raining bullets on the residences of the cohorts that were around him.

As things turned out we steered the ship towards an even bigger iceberg, we are fast approaching the end.

The truth is that we have a few years left at the top, the Creator has the count of our days on this earth too, let us use that to finish the race with some dignity. We used poor people’s monies to get treatment in seven star hospitals of Europe, what with the shopping sprees and properties in the pacific.

As Ecclesiastes would have it, all is vanity. With hindsight we should have built and capacitated our own hospitals and infrastructure, but we did not care right? Our children and ourselves are now running around all over Harare looking for a single ventilator during the night.

We are now working around the clock to paint Wilkins and make alternatives at Rock Foundation, for ourselves first then our voters second if it won’t be too late for the viral load in their hungry bodies.

Our own deeds are surely calling us to account, God will surely call us to account when we depart. We do not know when this will be, but surely it will come. Perence Shiri is accounting for his gruesome part in Gukurahundi as we speak. Takatadza maComrades.

Breastfeeding Tips For Women

The theme of World Breastfeeding Week 2020 is “Support breastfeeding for a healthier planet”.

In line with this theme, WHO and UNICEF are calling on governments to protect and promote women’s access to skilled breastfeeding counselling, a critical component of breastfeeding support.

Breastfeeding provides every child with the best possible start in life. It delivers health, nutritional and emotional benefits to both children and mothers. And it forms part of a sustainable food system. But while breastfeeding is a natural process, it is not always easy. Mothers need support – both to get started and to sustain breastfeeding.

Skilled counselling services can ensure that mothers and families receive this support, along with the information, the advice, and the reassurance they need to nourish their babies optimally.

Breastfeeding counselling can help mothers to build confidence while respecting their individual circumstances and choices.

Counselling can empower women to overcome challenges and prevent feeding and care practices that may interfere with optimal breastfeeding, such as the provision of unnecessary liquids, foods, and breastmilk substitutes to infants and young children.

Improving access to skilled counselling for breastfeeding can extend the duration of breastfeeding and promote exclusive breastfeeding, with benefits for babies, families and economies. Indeed, analysis indicates that increasing rates of exclusive breastfeeding could save the lives of 820 000 children every year, generating US $302 billion in additional income.

Skilled breastfeeding counselling can be provided by different actors including health care professionals, lactation counsellors and peer support providers, and in a variety of settings– in health facilities or clinics, through home visits or community programmes, in person or remotely.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is even more important to find innovative solutions to ensure that access to these essential services is not disrupted and that families continue to receive the breastfeeding counselling they need.

This is why UNICEF and WHO, in line with the policy actions advocated by the UNICEF-WHO-led Global Breastfeeding Collective, are calling on governments to:
INVEST to make skilled breastfeeding counselling available to every woman. Ensuring availability of skilled breastfeeding counselling to every woman will require increased financing for breastfeeding programmes and improved monitoring and implementation of policies, programmes and services.

TRAIN health care workers, including midwives and nurses, to deliver skilled breastfeeding counselling to mothers and families.

ENSURE that counselling is made available as part of routine health and nutrition services that are easily accessible.

PARTNER and collaborate with civil society and health professional associations, building strong collaborative systems for provision of appropriate counselling.

PROTECT health care workers from the influence of the baby food industry.

Together, through commitment, concerted action and collaboration, we can ensure that every mother has access to skilled breastfeeding counselling.

Emmerson Mnangagwa Is A Sellout, Declares Defiant Malema

Malema’s EFF “Roasts” Mliswa

Jonathan Moyo Attacks VP Chiwenga For Being Appointed Minister Of Health

By Dr Masimba Mavaza

Jonathan Moyo mocks the Vice President Chiwenga.

In a Twitter trail Jonathan Moyo was asked to give his wisdom and comment on the appointment of Chiwenga as the minister of Health. Moyo responded by saying the government cannot afford to lose the general now. Jonathan Moyo said the VP was told that no soldier will die of Corona anymore since he is the only one who will be allowed to sign CORONA out. In other words Jonathan Moyo was suggesting that the vice president is a moron who believes that those getting Corona are given it by the government.

Jonathan Moyo’s Tweet comes soon after the narative he has been peddling around suggesting that Comrade Perrance Shiri and all army personnel who died in the last few days, have been deliberately infected with COVID.

THIS shallow thinking by the devil of spin Jonathan Moyo is meant to cause confusion.

Dr Chiwenga is a wise man and his work shows his wisdom. Cde Chiwenga has sourced thousands of dollars worth of PPEs to fight the virus. Cde Chiwenga understands the impact and effects of the Corona and can only laugh at the comments of Jonathan Moyo.
Jonathan Moyo has been attacking the Vice President cde Chiwenga since time memorial.

He activated a dedicated attack on the credentials of the Vice president while Jonathan was the minister of information. Zimbabwe would remember when Jonathan engaged war with the army and he was using the Herald and the chronicle.

It has always been Jonathan’s Moyo purpose to bring the Vice President down. His personal hatred for anyone from Mashonaland came to light when he even took his fight from Chiwenga to ED to George Charamba. He misled Mrs Mugabe the former first lady to believe that she was under attack from the army.

Jonathan Moyo had earlier on stated that he will destroy ZANU PF from within. Having failed his mission he now finds it funny to insult the honourable Vice President.

The appointment of cde Chiwenga to thee ministry of health shows that the president is taking the war against COVID Seriously. This is a war appointment because we are at war with the COVID 19. This appointment shows the seriousness of the Zimbabwean president against the virus. Leadership is not judged by how you pronounce words. Cde Chiwenga might pronounce some words in a way peculiar to him this does not reflect on his leadership skills.
The comments by Jonathan Moyo are childish and in bad test.

Zanu PF Looters Are The Real Terrorists

04-08-2020

Emmerson Mnangagwa’s reckless utterances to brand the opposition as “terrorists” must never go unchallenged.

It is very clear that this unjustified polemic attack on innocent citizens is meant to cleanse torture, rape and abductions of political opponents.

It is tragic and unfortunate for a whole occupant of the highest office in the land to rabidly misrepresent citizens he purports to lead.

Terrorism borders on a deliberate plan to decimate human life and Emmerson Mnangagwa’s dealings with dissent voices best summarizes the meaning of the word.

The worst terrorists are those that abducted Cecilia Chimbiri, Netsai Marova and Joanna Mamombe for speaking against corruption.

More than spineless terrorists are those that put millions of lives at risk by looting millions of US dollars meant to avert the Covid-19 pandemic.

Surely you can not talk of terrorism without mention of a thief who looted Covid-19 funds, Obadiah Moyo.

What of a man who deployed the army on 01 August 2018 to butcher unarmed and innocent civilians just because they rejected him in the ballot?

That man is non other than Emmerson Mnangagwa who was the Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces.

Of course the list is infinite but it will be great injustice not to talk of the worst terrorist who presided over death of millions in this country due to starvation and hunger.

We shall never stop talking about corruption because Mnangagwa has branded us terrorists.

We shall never relent!

Yours Faithfully
Mmusi Maimane
