35 Striking Nurses Arrested In Mutare

File Picture of a nurse demonstrating at Parirenyatwa Hospital with the nurses message.

MUTARE – Thirty-five nurses at Mutare General Hospital were on Friday arrested for taking part in an “illegal” strike over poor salaries.

The disgruntled nurses were, however, released later without a charge following intervention of the hospital leadership.

Though Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Taviringwa Kakohwa professed ignorance over the arrests, a nurse who was part of the arrested group confirmed the arrests.

“We were rounded up and arrested in the morning at the hospital, as we were on strike. We were then taken to Mutare Central Police Station where we were briefly detained,” she said.

“We were, however, released around midday without any charge following intervention by our superiors,” added the nurse.

Hundreds of disgruntled nurses and other health workers across the country demonstrated this week over poor salaries.

The nurses also demanded the proposed United States-dollar COVID-19 allowance to be paid in cash.

City Of Harare Housing Official Commits Suicide In Bizarre Circumstances

State Media

A Harare City Council employee based at Remembrance Drive offices in Mbare last Friday allegedly committed suicide under yet to be established circumstances.

Ms Margaret Muganga who was working in the Department of Housing and Community Services as acting allocations officer, is suspected to have poisoned herself.

Her death came two weeks after the city council instituted investigations into the alleged unprocedural and double allocations of stands by the Department of Housing.

There are reports that the deceased left a suicide note in which she allegedly revealed circumstances leading to her death. National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed Ms Muganga’s death and said they were investigating circumstances surrounding her death.

“Police are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of (Ms) Margaret Muganga. The circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident are not clear and are now subject of the police inquiry.

“We will release detailed information only after inquiries are complete. In this regard, it is difficult to say if there was a suicide note or not,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.

On June 5, the Harare City Council temporarily suspended operations of the Allocations Unit in the Department of Housing to pave way for internal investigations.

Council said the move to temporarily shut down the unit was prompted by desperate home seekers that were duped of their hard earned cash.

However, the operations have since been resumed and according to a highly placed source in council, Ms Muganga was one of the employees implicated during the on-going investigations.

“She is one of the employees implicated in the on-going internal investigations. There are also reports that she left a suicide note before she took her life,” said the source.

When The Herald visited the Muganga family residence at House number 2645 Crowborough Phase 4, her husband refused to comment on whether his wife left a suicide note.

Real Madrid Beat Valencia As Battle For La Liga Title Reaches Home Stretch

Karim Benzema scored twice in the second half as title-chasing Real Madrid overcame Valencia 3-0 in a LaLiga clash played at the Alfredo Di Stefano on Thursday.

Zinedine Zidane’s charges needed to respond to log leaders Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Leganes on Tuesday which saw the Catalan giants opening a 5 point gap at the summit of the Spanish top division.

They (Madrid) struggled to break down an organised Valencia defence in the first half, with Eden Hazard denied by Valencia goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen from close range in the 11th minute.

Valencia thought they had taken the lead moments later when Rodrigo Moreno netted but VAR disallowed his strike citing offside in the building.

Neither side could break the deadlock in the first half.

Madrid took the lead after the restart, Eden Hazard setting up Benzema to find the bottom corner on the hour mark.

Substitute Marco Asensio, who was making his first appearance since the horrific injury in pre-season, scored with his first touch, connecting from a Ferland Mendy cross.

Asensio then turned from scorer to provider, setting up Benzema for a goal of the season contender, the Frenchman finding the top corner with four minutes of regulation time left.

Valencia finished the clash with ten men following Kang-In Lee’s sending off.

KAS Eupen “Pray” For Musona Stay

Farai Dziva|KAS Eupen coach Benat San Jose is hoping that Knowledge Musona will remain at the club for next season and beyond.

The Warriors skipper joined Eupen on loan from Anderlecht in January and made an instant impact; scoring ten minutes into his debut against Charleroi as well as netting the winner against R Excel Mouscron, guaranteeing the club’s Belgian League status in the process.

Eupen’s Spanish coach San Jose was impressed by the 29-year-old’s contribution and hopes his stay at the club will be extended.

“Benat San José hopes for the return of Smail Prevljak and Knowledge Musona to AS Eupen,” reported Belgian publication Lameuse Sport.

South African giants Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns are also interested in signing the Aces Youth Academy graduate but Eupen are the favorites to land him, judging by his agent Mike Makaab’s words.

“His first option is to stay in Europe, there’s no doubt about that. He is 29 years old. People are saying he is old, but he is in the prime of his career. He did very well with Eupen at the end of the season” Makaab said.

“In seven games, he had two goals and a number of assists, he helped the club climb away from the bottom of the log, so he has done really well.” he added.

Arsenal Coach Speaks On Luiz Disastrous Performance

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has insisted that David Luiz’s performance against Manchester City has not impacted the decision he will make about the defender.

The centre-back had a disastrous outing on Wednesday and made a defensive blunder that led to Raheem Sterling’s opener on the stroke of half-time before receiving a red card for hauling down Riyad Mahrez inside the penalty area four minutes into the second half.

His bad performance has attracted concerns from frustrated supporters who have called for Luiz to leave upon the end of his one-year deal on June 30.

Speaking after the game on SkySports, Arteta gave his verdict saying: “He (Luiz) has spoken in the dressing room. He is someone that is very honest and straightforward. I’m sure he will talk to you guys and explain his feelings.

“My opinion on David doesn’t change. It won’t change because he had a difficult performance tonight. This won’t change a thing for me, no.

South African Premier Soccer League, ABSA Part Ways After 13- Year Partnership

South African PSL chairman Irvin Khoza has confirmed that they are in talks with four companies who have expressed interest in sponsoring the top-flight league.

The PSL announced earlier in the month that it is parting ways with the Absa Group at the end of this season after a 13-year partnership.

“We’ve got four companies at the moment (who want to sponsor the league),” Khoza told IOL without revealing the identity of the corporates.

“The economy is not in a healthy state, but we are trying to find the best ways to position our proposals. It is a very difficult one. Having said that, we are working very hard (towards finalising a deal).

“At the moment though our main focus is on how to restart the season. Remember, we still have to finish the old season before we can say too much about the new season. Right now, we are waiting for the government to give us the go-ahead.”

Bidvest Group and DStv are reported to be leading the race to clinch the sponsorship deal while betting firm Betway is also in the picture- Soccer 24

Chamisa Scoffs At Khupe, Mwonzora Euphoria Over Seizure Of Harvest House

Farai Dziva|MDC Alliance president, Advocate Nelson Chamisa has scoffed at the euphoria over the seizure of Harvest House by Thokozani Khupe.

According to Chamisa, a people’s revolution is not confined to a building.

Chamisa on Wednesday visited the late Kelvin Choto’s family in Chitungwiza.

Choto was shot dead by State security agents during the Jan 2019 disturbances.

Chamisa joined the Choto family members as they celebrated 2-year – old Janel’s birthday.

Janel is the daughter of the late Kelvin Choto (21).

“They are celebrating the seizure of Harvest House and they are saying a lot about Chamisa.

They say we have kicked Chamisa out of Harvest House, we have grabbed Chamisa’s MPs – That doesn’t matter.

A revolution is not limited to a building, you cannot take away 2,6 million people, is that possible?

A different Zimbabwe is possible.A revolution is an unstoppable idea,” said Chamisa.

He added:”Mr Mnangagwa cannot suppress the people forever.People will liberate themselves from oppression.

You think you are on top of the situation but you are fooling yourself, things can change unexpectedly.”

COVID -19: Basic Safety Tips For You

What can I do to protect myself and prevent the spread of disease?

Stay aware of the latest information on the COVID-19 outbreak, available on the WHO website and through your national and local public health authority. Many countries around the world have seen cases of COVID-19 and several have seen outbreaks.

Some countries have succeeded in slowing or stopping their outbreaks.

However, the situation is unpredictable so check regularly for the latest news.

You can reduce your chances of being infected or spreading COVID-19 by taking some simple precautions:

Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.

Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses.

Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth.

From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene.

This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19..

Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections.

Keep up to date on the latest COVID-19 hotspots (cities or local areas where COVID-19 is spreading widely). If possible, avoid travelling to places – especially if you are an older person or have diabetes, heart or lung disease.

Why? You have a higher chance of catching COVID-19 in one of these areas.

“It’s Not That We Are Unpatriotic, We Are Just Realistic”: Workers

PRESS STATEMENT BY ZCTU PRESIDENT PETER GIFT MUTASA ON WAGES AND PRICES ISSUED AT A PRESS CONFERENCE ON 19 JUNE 2020, ZCTU OFFICES, GORLON HOUSE, HARARE

Members of the Fourth Estate, I welcome you to this Press briefing which is specifically on the issues of wages and salaries and the escalating prices of goods and services.

Let me start by giving thanks to the Almighty God for keeping us safe in this difficult time when we are facing the deadly COVID-19 virus. We give him all the glory and reverence.

If you remember, before the outbreak of COVID-19, we had an unfinished business of fighting for a reasonable living minimum wage.

In particular, the ZCTU was calling for the return of the use of the United States dollar as a mode of payment for wages and salaries.

We argued that the country was not ready to have its own currency because the economic fundamentals were not in place. We even proposed another alternative of using the South African Rand.

Unfortunately we were labelled ‘unpatriotic’ by the pro-establishment.
It is not that we do not love our country, but we were being realistic.

Today everyone is crying as inflation takes a bite on incomes. The ZWL$2 500 minimum wage gazetted by the government has become useless overnight as inflation soars to over 850%.

During the lockdown period, prices of goods and services have risen by over 500% while the Poverty Datum Line is way above ZWL$8 000 and changing every minute.

In any case, most goods and services now require payment in United States dollar. A bucket of maize now averages US$6. Even those services that are pegged in the local currency, they are all benchmarked to the US$.

We said we were chasing a mirage and there was need to go back to the use of US$, but we were ridiculed.

Some might argued that the country has no capacity to pay a living wage and more so in US$. Zimbabwe is endowed with so much sufficient resources if only we curb the high level corruption that has been the major cause of our misery.

You have seen for yourself how the COVID-19 has been used to loot funds from donors. It is just a tip of the iceberg. Minerals are being looted left right and center everyday and if we curb this corruption scourge, we would be able to meet the basic needs of our people.

Even farmers have not been spared. In fact, there is daylight robbery going on. Tobacco farmers buy their inputs using foreign currency and sale their crops in foreign currency.

They do not get all their earnings in foreign currency. When they deposit the little US$ they get into their Nostro accounts, they are paid using the fixed official rate of US$1:ZWL$25 yet the rate out there is over US$1:ZWL$70.

During the TNF meetings, the government pleaded with social partners to give them six months to put the economy back on track. They claimed they would be able to stabilise the currency in six months.

They literary refused to adopt the Rand and the US$ in the name of ‘sovereignty’. You can all now see where we are now!
Everyone is crying, from the civil servant, the student to the informal worker.

The center cannot hold anymore. We are now facing the precipice. Workers have been pushed too far and they cannot take it anymore.

As you are aware, before the onset of COVID-19, the ZCTU had mobilised workers to take action against not only poor wages but also the high cost of living.

The mandate was given by workers during the consultation process in the form of labour forums that took place throughout the country. We had put the action plan on halt due the Corona pandemic and also to give dialogue a chance.

It looks like we are going nowhere and we today are advising the government that we have been left with no option than to exercise our constitutional right to protest.

We are therefore calling on all Zimbabweans who have Zimbabwe at heart to join the ZCTU as we mount a peaceful push for a better Zimbabwe.

However, we can not mobilize on the basis of sectors. No more informal – formal divide, no more urban – rural divide, no east, west, south and north divide only the poor and oppressed collectively waging a struggle for a fair share of the cake.

We are all scavenging for food and starving. So, what is the basis of the division? We need a united front from students, residents, peasant farmers and civic society.

The nurses have already shown the way and we must support them. We salute the heroic and united position adopted by health service workers who are fighting for better salaries.

For too long the government has been reneging on its promises to improve the welfare of health workers. They are front line workers in the fight against Corona virus.

We also salute the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) for declaring that from Monday 22 June teachers will be embarking on action to press for US$ salaries.

It is our collective struggle; everyone is suffering and must collectively contribute. We know we will be met with brutal force and there is a possibility that some people might be killed, tortured, abducted and brutalised.

This is the price some of us a prepared to pay. We must all mount a serious collective and prolonged protest until we get a better Zimbabwe.

Zimbabweans are dying silently during this lockdown period due to hunger and starvation.

The ZWL$200 per household promised by the government during this lockdown has not reached them despite it being too little. No one will fight for us but ourselves.

As workers, it is our belief that we have a Constitutional right to go and fill the streets and I am inviting all Zimbabweans to this worthy struggle. It will be tough, but be assured victory is certain if we are united and determined.

GOD BLESS WORKERS OF ZIMBABWE
I THANK YOU!

Mashakada Hits Back At Critics

By A Correspondent- MDC Alliance legislator Tapiwa Mashakada who defected to the MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe has hit back at former colleagues in the MDC Alliance who have criticized him.

In an article he posted on Facebook, Mashakada said a clarion call is made to all MDC Party Structures and the 2014 National Council saying: “Munhu wese mugango/Umuntu wonke embizeni”

“The MDC party does not have a substantive leader until the Extra Ordinary Congress chooses a new Leader. The shenanigans that happened after Tsvangirai’s death were all nullified by the Supreme Court. These were:Chamisa’s takeover and his Congress, Khupe’s Congress,” he said.

“True Democrats must accept the ruling of our courts and comply with the Supreme court ruling. All accusations about some people being sell-outs or bought by Zanu PF are immaterial. It is cheap policking. Let MDC leaders walk the talk on democracy, rule of law and constitutionalism. The MDC family must unite, go to Congress and choose a new leader to replace Morgan   Tsvangirai and reaffirm the original position that MDC is a labour backed party, a social democratic party and not a neo-liberal party.”

He said the Congress must reposition the new MDC as a Pan-Africanist party with known national values and footprints in Africa.

“But most importantly, a party that is non tribal, non racial, non sexist. A party with a  rural support base. The cabal that is ill-advising my young  brother Nelson Chamisa are making his political Waterloo and spoiling his chances of  ever becoming the President of Zimbabwe,” he said.

Daring Wife Introduces Lover To Hubby As Church Elder

NATIONAL NEWS

UNLIKE catching a cheating man, nabbing an unfaithful woman is not easy.

This is because like a clumsy bear, men always leave behind trails of their infidelity, like scented perfume and lipstick on their shirts, lodge receipts in pockets and raunchy text messages in their phones.

A Plumtree man’s world fell apart when he busted his wife in a steamy embrace with a man she had been bringing home after she initially introduced him as her church elder.

Njabulo Mpala from Dingumuzi suburb who reportedly vowed never to “trust a woman again” flew into a rage after he caught his now ex-wife Semkelwe Ncube flirting with her lover only identified as Tshuma in their matrimonial bedroom.

The heartbreaking discovery reportedly happened on Saturday last week.

Mpala, an informal trader, reportedly caught Ncube cheating after he received a tip-off from a neighbour that Tshuma who was always visiting Ncube mostly in his absence, had sneaked into his house.

It is reported that when he quickly returned home, after that tip-off, Mpala was in for a shock when he found Ncube on their matrimonial bed while being cuddled in the arms of her “church elder”.

Out of fury, Mpala reportedly meted instant justice on Ncube. In the midst of the chaos, Tshuma reportedly made good his escape.

A witness who spoke on condition of anonymity told B-Metro that Ncube who felt guilty after being busted while cheating on her husband deserted their matrimonial home.

The witness said Mpala was heartbroken after he discovered that the mother of his two children had fooled him when she introduced her lover to him as her church elder.

“MaNcube (Semkelwe) deserted their matrimonial home after her husband caught her red-handed with her lover on their matrimonial bed.

“It was disheartening that the lover was someone who was known to Mpala and was always coming to their house after Semkelwe introduced him to her husband as her church elder,” said the witness.
When reached for comment an inconsolable Mpala could neither confirm nor deny the incident. Instead, he avoided the questions by saying:
“Of course I feel bad, but I can’t change what’s gone on”.

Ncube, however, defended her shenanigans saying it was revenge on her husband who had also been cheating on her.

“It was revenge on my husband after I discovered he had been all along fooling around with another woman,” she said- B-Metro

Muchadehama said they have since approached the High Court seeking leave to appeal to the Supreme Court against the latest decision.

Couple Teams Up To Beat “Nosy” Neighbour

By A Correspondent- According to a relative, Excellent Nyathi of Old Lobengula was touched when he heard high pitched cries from his neighbour’s house where a man only identified as SaMaDu was pummelling his wife Partel Mlilo allegedly accusing her of being a woman of loose morals.

The source went on to say Nyathi rushed to the house and restrained the angry SaMaDu from battering his hapless wife.

“He left when the couple was on talking terms at around 9pm,”said the relative.

But Nyathi did not know that by intervening in the couple’s feud he had courted trouble for himself.

Later on in the evening he heard a knock on his door and upon opening, the source said, SaMaDu grabbed him by the throat accusing him of causing a rift in their union.

The source said while he was trying to explain his side of the story a heavy slap landed on his cheek.

“He cried for help as the marauding couple took turns to hit him with open hands and kicked him with booted feet all over the body. They left him shirtless and with torn trousers,” said a neighbour. The source said the couple demanded money from Nyathi.

“They demanded money from Nyathi so that they could free him but he could not give them anything since he had nothing on him,” said a source.

Hearing that he had no money seems to have stoked more anger as they turned more violent and smashed windows with beer bottles.

The source said Nyathi’s mother Juliet Ndlovu (48) phoned police officers who rushed to the scene and arrested the violent couple.

Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed: “We are investigating a case of assault and malicious damage to property.

“A couple from Old Lobengula suburb beat their neighbour accusing him of causing problems in their marriage. They also damaged windows with beer bottles.”

Mr. President Your Own People Will Soon Surrender You To The Public!!!

By Tinashe Eric Muzamhindo- To me the loot, reflects racing against time. There is something fishy around this kind of looting.

It looks like there is a deadline, or there are fixed targets which must be met, and the whole drama shows that there were no criminals around Robert Mugabe, it was simply a fight to have a turn to loot national coffers!!!

I’m so surprised to see the whole State President, posing for images with criminals who have looted the state coffers. What does this entail on your legacy as a Head of State?

All those people around you, and the praise singers will be spectators when you are in trouble. The nature of people is that those around you will be laughing at you when you get into trouble. Where is George Charamba, the spokesman to former President Robert Mugabe? Today he is in your Government. Where is Oppah Muchinguri?

Where is the politburo which endorsed your dismissal? The same politburo which endorsed your dismissal, is the same politburo which endorsed your Presidency. The same 10 provinces which called for your ouster, is the same 10 provinces which reinstated you.

Your departure will be sad, it is unfortunate that those around you are after crumbs falling from the master’s table, and they are comfortable with what is happening in our country.

I have few questions, why are you holding on to Obadiah Moyo, the failed Minister of Health? Why is your cabinet full of questionable characters? After all the exposed loot of Covid – 19, why are you holding on to Obadiah Moyo who is responsible for all this mess?

President Mnangagwa President Mnangagwa President Mnangagwa!!!

I’m tempted to believe that the Drax International saga has a lot of finger prints around it, given the context that the Minister of Health is still around and you are still holding onto to him.

There could more to it than what we are reading from social media and other platforms. Money that was meant to feed the whole nation during the pandemic was looted by own members of the family, through hoax companies linked to the first family, and do you care about your own legacy?

I was looking at images circulating on social media, which you were posing with those questionable characters, where on this earth would you see a whole some President posing with criminals of that nature? From Drax International, to all the Nat pharm deals, it clears shows that these deals have a lot of finger prints around them, and my simple question is why posing for images with such criminals?

Today Muthuli Ncube is running from one corridor to another, with many papers with Government letterhead, cooking all the measures, it’s too late Mr. President, the centre can’t hold anymore, people are fed up with lies, propaganda, cooked information, fake receipts, fake vouchers, fake statements, failed promises, torture and alleged abductions, it’s time to give an ear or reflect, or else your own people will soon surrender you to the public. It is important to listen, when you are offered advice.

It is not necessary to attack those who open your eyes. I’m surprised that whole some 60 Million USD is transferred from Government coffers without your knowledge? The honest truth is that all these are games, and the money was looted by your own members of the family and close people around you, we the majority have nothing to benefit.

The rate at which press conferences are held being held from one corridor to another clearly shows that the pivot holding all the pillars of the system will soon crumble and all pieces will be scattered alover. It will be very difficult to gather spilled milk.

Today, we are witnessing nurses and other civil servants, going on strike, and this clearly shows you have failed as a leader. Previously you have tried to heap blame on sanctions, yet your own people loot the Government leaving the purse empty.

My simple question, why is the first lady Mrs. Mnangagwa involved in Ministry of Health? You honestly tell me, Zimbabwe has run out of Ambassadors for Health Ministry? What a joke!!!

Where is the 18 Billion stimulus package which you announced during the lockdown? Where is the 500 Million which Muthuli Ncube announced, which was meant for cushioning people? Do you realize how the masses are suffering?

No accountability to platinum deals

No accountability to Gold deals

No accountability to Jumbo & Fredda Rebbeca mine

No accountability to all mining activities in Chiadzwa, and how much worthy of diamonds were extracted during the lockdown?

No accountability on Nat pharm deals

It is high time you must open your eyes and listen to people’s grievances.

(Sapere aude.) “Have the courage to use your own understanding,” is therefore the motto of the enlightenment.”- Emmanuel Kant, Answering The Question: What Is Enlightenment?, 1784.

What do the snake-oil ravings of, say, “Prophet” Freddy, have in common with a paper on “Systemic Racism” written by a Black academic at western in university. On the surface, nothing at all. However, peel away the semantics and you find yourself confronting my argument; that the roots of an outlook that wears the mantle of race, identity and politics are in folk religion.

One of the most enduring beliefs in Zimbabwean culture is that life’s problems are caused by others. Business failing, marriage failing, job loss, children performing well at school then, at some point before entering university, becoming dissolute etc. Before contact with European Christian missionaries, such misfortunes were the work of varoyi (witches) who could secretly administer poisons that made it look like ordinary illness, or drove a person mad, or induced loss of affection towards a spouse etc. Some varoyi were adept at appealing to their victim’s vadzimu (guardian ancestral spirits), persuading them to look the other way by pointing out their grievances against the victim. Sometimes, it was the vadzimu who withdrew their protection if they felt their descendant was in the wrong- for instance, if they had enabled him to acquire vast wealth only to neglect his children. It was then the role of the svikiro (spirit medium) or the n’anga (the so-called witchdoctor) to reveal the supernatural forces at play in a family’s misfortune, and prescribe potent defences against varoyi or propitiatory rituals to appease the angered vadzimu as the case may be.

Christianity did not end such beliefs. Rather, modern scientific method only reduced the number of illnesses that can be attributed to witchcraft. Still on the list are many disabilities, mental illnesses and learning disabilities. In fact, the popular charismatic churches clothe these ancient beliefs with Christian terminology, but the fundamentals are the same. The pastor plays the role of the sangoma or svikiro, he can see the machinations of unseen supernatural forces and he can grapple with them. Just look at a leaflet of a typical “Black church,” the ones led by a self-styled “Prophet” or “Apostle” or some other such proud title. They offer not fellowship with other Christians etc, but deliverance from curses, witchcraft and promise jobs, residence permits etc. The leader of the church plays the role of the n’anga or svikiro, like these religious leaders of old, he has the unique ability to see the supernatural forces at play in events such as job loss, marriage failure etc. and act in God’s name to deal with these.

My problem with such an outlook is that it becomes an overarching excuse for individual or, as we have seen with the National Day of Prayer in Zimbabwe, national failure among Black Zimbabwean people. It deflects from individual or collective responsibility for certain outcomes. It denies the fact that sometimes, even with the best laid plans and most strategic actions, things can go wrong and there are factors that no mortal has no control over. It opens the path towards pinning the blame on things that may not be rooted in religious belief, but are as less reliant on empirical evidence than sheer enthusiasm, such as “Systematic Racism” or “Patriarchy.” More importantly, it motivates people to direct their energy towards a problem that is not there at all when they should be addressing with the real ones in their lives.

Masimba Musodza

I am not going to deny that there are people in our society who dislike a person enough to seek to do them harm, and rejoice at news of their misfortune. There are people in our society who see relatives, even siblings, and colleagues at work as rivals. They see other people’s success as an act of divine injustice. The man who has struggled to build his business is livid that his younger brother has built his in a much shorter time and what appears to be less effort. The woman whose daughter is now on child number three and still no man to present as a father to any of the children finds it hard to be happy for her sister-in-law, the wife of her husband’s brother, whose daughter has been married for a substantial dowry and is now preparing for an ostentatious wedding. Stories abound of people carrying out diabolical schemes to scupper their relatives and “friends”’ plans, from spreading malicious gossip that can end a marriage to writing letters to the Home Office seeking to get someone deported.

However, the fact remains that not one of such people is capable of supernaturally standing in the way of another person’s progress. They might be able to slip poison into someone’s food. They might tarnish someone’s reputation, leading to the breakdown of a romantic relationship or loss of a career opportunity. But they cannot actively cause unsuccessful outcomes or even physical injury by mere evocation of imagined deities or supernatural entities. Even the Bible does not attribute misfortune to any other force outside of ordinary human action and Providence.

I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me:
I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: That they may know
from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside
me. I am the Lord, and there is none else. I form the light, and create
darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.
– Isaiah 45:5-7.

Once freed from the notion that ordinary problems are caused by extra-ordinary powers, I believe Black people and whole nations are able to objectively interrogate the idea that the problems we face can be attributed to “Systematic Racism,” “White Supremacy,” “Patriarchy” “White Privilege” and all of the words one hears often these days in discussions. It is not an easy thing, even with a Black population that has access to information and education on a scale that has not been seen since the days of the Nile Valley civilisations. Just as the n’angas and svikiros held positions of power and wealth from trafficking in their belief system, as do now the “prophets” and “apostles” of hundreds of churches, the purveyors of political identity ideologies would not want to see an outlook that has given them social standing and an income scrutinised and possibly abandoned, even if it stands to be replaced by something that, in my view, is morally superior. That something is an outlook or an ethos that ascribes agency and responsibility to Black people and whole nations, rather than the gods or European and American racism.

The deceased Sibongile Charehwa was allegedly fatally assaulted to death by her two uncles, aged 10 and 14 after she messed her panties.

Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko confirmed the murder of Sibongile Charehwa to B-Metro.

“We are investigating a case of murder of the deceased Sibongile Charehwa who was assaulted until she died by two minors whom she was left in custody of.

“The two accused persons took turns to assault her with a stick all over the body until she became unconscious.

Woman Snatches Best Friend’s Lover, Threatens Her With Death

By A Correspondent- A Bulawayo woman is beyond angry and upset after her best friend whom she claimed she was spending every single day with, allegedly snatched her boyfriend.

Ollin Ngulube from Pumula North suburb is apparently feeling sick in her heart after her friend Memory Due Sibanda from Makokoba suburb stole her boyfriend Delani Mpunzi.

What makes her so wild is that Sibanda won’t even let her speak to Mpunzi whom she is also reportedly parading around her suburb like a prized catch saying she was not worthy of having him.

Ngulube’s anger pangs were contained in papers obtained at the Bulawayo Civil Court in which she was seeking a peace order against her former friend claiming she was verbally and physically abusing her. She claimed Sibanda was also threatening to kill her over her boyfriend.

“I want a peace order to be granted against Memory Due Sibanda from Makokoba suburb. She was my best friend and our friendship ended after she snatched my boyfriend Delani Mpunzi despite knowing that we were in love.

“Memory is now verbally and physically abusing me as well as threatening to kill me. I want the court to stop her from insulting and assaulting me as well as threatening me.

She should also stop visiting me at my work place and home,” her affidavit reads in part.

Ngulube’s case was, however, struck off the roll by presiding magistrate Nomsa Ncube after she didn’t come to court to corroborate her claims.

“MDC Leaders Sold-Out On Reforms And Have Been Doing So Ever Since The GNU”

By Patrick Guramatunhu- “MDC National Spokesperson Fadzai Mahere has condemned the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission for alleging failing to investigate the Coronavirus tender scam that has sucked in Minister of Health Obadiah Moyo,” reported a local online publication..

“The fiery spokesperson also took aim at the government for using state apparatus to block people from getting into CBD to attend parliamentary hearings on the constitutional amendment.”

“The real issue before us is that corruption is killing us!” proclaimed Mahere.

No one would disagree with that; corruption is indeed killing Zimbabwe and that it is Zanu PF thugs who are behind the looting. We have known this for decades! The key point is what can we do to end corruption?

It has been as clear as day that as long as Zanu PF was able to rig the elections and stay in power the looting will only get worse. So the challenge was to implement the democratic reforms designed to stop Zanu PF rigging elections.

The people of Zimbabwe have risked life and limb to elect Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC colleagues into power on the understanding that they will implemented the democratic reforms. They had their best opportunity ever to implement the reforms during the 2008 to 2013 GNU.

They failed to get even one reform implemented because Mugabe bribed them with ministerial limos, very generous salaries and allowances, a US$4 million mansion for Tsvangirai, etc., etc. With their snouts in the feeding trough MDC leaders to the man and woman forgot about the reforms for five years!

Of course, MDC leaders sold-out on reforms and have been doing so ever since the GNU.

SADC leaders begged, literally, Tsvangirai and his MDC friends not to participate in the 2013 elections without first implementing the reforms. “If you go into elections next month, you are going to lose; the elections are done!” SADC leaders told Tsvangirai and company during the SADC Summit in Maputo, according to Dr Ibbo Mandaza, the director of SAPES, who was there.

Needless to say Tsvangirai and company ignored SADC leaders’ warning and participated in the 2013 elections with no reforms. Needless to add, that Zanu PF blatantly rigged those elections.

Not only did MDC leaders know that with no reforms Zanu PF will rig the elections but worse still they knew by participating they will be giving credibility to the process and thus legitimacy to the Zanu PF government. They still went ahead regardless out of greed, as David Coltart admitted in this book.

In his Book, The Struggle Continues 50 years of Tyranny in Zimbabwe, David Coltart, former MDC – Ncube Senator and Minister of Education in the 2008 GNU, gave details of how Zanu PF was flouting the electoral rules in the upcoming 2013 elections. It was clear the elections would not be free, fair and credible.

“The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious – withdraw from the elections,” wrote Senator Coltart.

“The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”

If anyone thought MDC leaders and the rest in the opposition camp had finally learned the lesson on the critical importance of implementing the democratic reforms to ensure free, fair and credible elections; he/she was wrong. The MDC leaders’ greed has blinded their eyes and made their minds impermeable to reason.

Chamisa and the whole Zimbabwe opposition entourage were falling over each other to participate in the 2018 elections although it was as clear as bell that Zanu PF was rigging the elections.

“MDC has devised stringent measures to stop Zanu PF rigging the elections!” Chamisa countered those arguing the opposition must not take part in the elections without reforms.

Once again Zanu PF blatantly rigged the 2018 elections. Of course, MDC was totally helpless to stop the rigging. Indeed, Chamisa et al did not even insist on the production of a verified voters’ roll – a legal and common sense requirement!

“Zanu PF corruption is killing us!” True, but that is only half the story. The other half is “MDC greed is keeping Zanu PF in power!” For as long as MDC participation in rigged elections helps Zanu PF claim some modicum of legitimacy Mnangagwa and company will remain in office and the wholesale looting will continue.

Mnangagwa knows that as long as Zanu PF continues to offer a few gravy-train seats to the opposition Chamisa et al will participate in the elections regardless how flawed and illegal the process gets!

If Zimbabweans want the democratic reforms implemented so the country can finally have free, fair and credible elections and good governance; they must wake-up to the reality that MDC leaders are now interested in sharing with Zanu PF the spoils of power and have long abandoned the hope of implementing the reforms. MDC leaders are now running with hare, whilst they are seeking povo’s vote, but once in power they will hunt with the Zanu PF hounds!

Daring Woman Brings Own Lover Home As Church Elder

By A Correspondent- Unlike catching a cheating man, nabbing an unfaithful woman is not easy.

“It was revenge on my husband after I discovered he had been all along fooling around with another woman,” she said.

Community Service For Thigh Vendor Who Dumped Newly Born Baby

By A Correspondent- A self-confessed thigh vendor from Shurugwi who dumped her newly born baby into a Blair toilet claiming the baby was going to distract her in soliciting for clients has been slapped with 235 hours of community service.

Netsai Ngazimbi (24)) of Poshai Village under Chief Nhema left the court shell shocked when she said she dumped the baby in the toilet as it was going to be a major distraction in her thigh vending business.

Ngazimbi appeared before Shurugwi magistrate Sithabile Zungula facing charges of infanticide and concealing child birth and she pleaded guilty.

She told the court that her job needed maximum concentration which she was not going to be able to render had she decided to keep the baby.

“I am a sex worker and l don’t earn much. As a result, l had to get rid of the baby because the baby was going to divide my attention yet l have to focus on my work. Keeping the baby meant that l would have to stay home and not go to work.

“As it is, l do not have food to feed myself so I wasn’t going to afford to buy clothes, food and medication for the baby,” she said.

Circumstances surrounding the matter are that on April 25, at a business centre in Chachacha, Ngazimbi gave birth and wrapped the baby in a cloth. She then proceeded to the toilet and threw the baby in and fled from the scene.

A colleague heard the baby crying and alerted the police. The baby was retrieved from the toilet but died upon admission to a hospital.

An interrogation was conducted and it was established that the baby belonged to the accused leading to her arrest.

“Zanu Pf Youths Bag COVID-19 Youth Relief Fund”

By A Correspondent- Manicaland Provincial Affairs minister Ellen Gwaradzimba has blasted Zanu-PF youths for hiding behind the party name to default on payment of bank loans.

She made the remarks during the launch of a COVID-19 Youth Relief Fund by the Youth ministry in Mutare early this week. This followed the release of $17 million by government to sustain youth projects disrupted by the COVID-10 pandemic.

The meeting was attended by Youth deputy minister Tinomudaishe Machakaire, Zanu-PF Manicaland chairman Tawanda Mukodza and Zanu-PF central committee member Gertrude Mutandi, among others.

“We are gathered here to witness the disbursement of a youth fund that is aimed to cushion the youths in this COVID-19 period. I want to urge you the youths to be aggressive when doing business,” Gwaradzimba said.

“I am worried because most of the youths have gotten used to not repaying loans advanced to them, claiming it is Zanu-PF’s money. If you fail to repay, others will not benefit. When we are given such money, we should not go on merrymaking.”

The minister urged youths to formalise their businesses.

About 400 beneficiaries walked away with between $3 000 and $5 000 which the youths claimed was too little to start a business.

Mukodza supported Gwaradzimba, saying they always encouraged their youths to repay loans.

“As you are aware, the issue of loans is non-partisan, if any individual fails to pay a loan, he or she is sued. But as a party we fight for our youths to get such loans. Every youth in the country can benefit from loans,” he said.

Machakaire, who was representing his boss Kirsty Coventry, said most of the youths were hesitant to apply for loans.

“I have realised that most of the youths are hesitant to apply for loans. As government, we give you opportunities to succeed and we are also urging you to formalise your businesses. We need you to dream big when doing business,” he said.

Machakaire acknowledged that the money given to youths was little, but promised that government would mobilise more, adding that the issue of loans was non-partisan.

In Mashonaland East, a paltry 13 youths in the province received the loans at a meeting where Marondera Central legislator Caston Matewu (MDC Alliance) was turned away.

Matewu was barred by some Zanu-PF youths from attending the meeting, who told him he was not invited, despite Machakaire saying the youth fund was non-partisan.

“I am disappointed that we have only 13 youths who have benefitted from these government funds, that was only $30 000 disbursed,” Machakaire said.

Some youths, however, expressed disgruntlement over the strenuous process of acquiring documents required to access the loans due to lockdown restrictions, among other things. The 13 youths received a total of $5 000 each.

Govt Clarifies On Civil Servants’ Relief Allowances

By A Correspondent- The government has said the US$75 COVID-19 relief allowance for civil servants and US$30 for retired civil servants is a provisional measure to ease the anguish on its employees and pensioners who are confronted with exorbitant prices in shops.

The government said that it had noted the effects of the unjustified price increases caused by the country’s detractors, elite opportunists and malcontents who are pushing a nefarious agenda to cause regime change.

The Secretary for the Public, Defence, Police and Prisons and Recreational Service Commissions Jonathan Wutawunashe had this to say:

The rationale of that Covid-19 allowance is the anguish that has been reported by civil servants; it is the challenge that people are facing at the point of sale.

So supporting livelihoods at the point of sale is the purpose of that cushion of US$75. However, the US$75 is not going to be in my hand, it is going to be in a Nostro account. It will be issued with a card that one can swipe at the point of sale.

Every civil servant is requested to open a Nostro account and arrangements will be made, and I am sure proper communication will be made to the banks to facilitate the opening of the Nostro accounts.

We are going to work out the details with all stakeholders to ensure that there is soft landing to ensure the intention of the allowance is not lost because it is a cushion, it is a relief measure that is supposed to address the livelihood requirements of civil servants and their families.

Wutawunashe said the awarding the COVID-19 allowance does not shut the door on further negotiations between the Government and its workers.

FULL TEXT- “The True Measure Of Any Nation’s Humanity Is How It Treats The Most Vulnerable Among Them”: Auxilia Mnangagwa

By A Correspondent- First lady Auxilia Mnangagwa has revealed that a number of street children are set to be relocated to Chambuta Children’s Home in Chiredzi after they agreed to abandon street life.

Said Mnangagwa in a facebook post:

“Every society needs children because they are our hope and future. Every child deserves education and life opportunities and as a nation we cannot fully develop if we turn a blind eye to marginalised children.

In 2019, through the Angel of Hope Foundation I made a pledge to create lasting positive change for children living on the streets. We are transforming lives of hundreds of children living on the streets by seeing to their basic needs such as shelter, food and skills training among others.

Yesterday, working together with the Department of Social Welfare, we counselled some children living on the streets in Harare who have agreed to abandon life on the streets and be rehabilitated at Chambuta Children’s Home in Chiredzi.

The true measure of any nation’s humanity is how it treats the most vulnerable among them. Marginalised children are our children and we should not leave them behind

Gomwe Reacts To Suspension, Says It’s Null And Void

By A Correspondent- Zanu PF Harare Province District Coordinating Committee (DCC) chairman Godwin Gomwe has scoffed at his purported suspension from his position for indiscipline.

The party’s interim chairperson for Harare Metropolitan Province Oliver Chidawu signed a prohibition letter written to Gomwe accusing him of posting statements on social media that tarnished the characters of some senior party officials.

Gomwe told the state media that as acting chairperson, Chidawu did not have authority to institute disciplinary proceedings against him.

Said Gomwe:

Yes, I received a prohibition order from the acting provincial chairman Chidawu, he said. Unfortunately, he does not have the right to give me a prohibition order since he is not a substantive chairman. I will carry on with my duties as the DCC 2 chairperson.

According to the letter, a meeting of the provincial co-ordinating committee that was held on May 28, 2020, resolved to have Gomwe suspended.

Chidawu added that the meeting resolved to recommend to institute disciplinary proceedings against Gomwe by the National Disciplinary Committee.

Security Guard Murders Girlfriend, Breaks The News To Her Family Using The Deceased’s Phone

By A Correspondent- A security guard who allegedly killed her lover for cheating on him with a man based in the diaspora delivered the horrific news of her death to her family over the phone.

Munyaradzai Chinyama killed Chipo Vhunga of Chikanga, Mutare in cold blood on June 3 in Crowborough, Harare following a heated argument over WhatsApp chats with the other boyfriend the deceased was on the verge of getting married to.

Chipo was a security guard and her boyfriend Chinyama worked as a supervisor at the same security firm.

Chipo’s mother Virginia Vhunga denied claims that Chinyama was Chipo’s live-in boyfriend. She said:

The only boyfriend we knew about was a man who resides in the United Kingdom. Chinyama was not our son-in-law, neither was he her live-in-boyfriend.

He stayed in Kuwadzana, while Chipo stayed in Crowborough, Harare. Her UK boyfriend was making plans to come to Zimbabwe for lobola proceedings. Maybe this triggered Chinyama’s wrath.

Chinyama and my daughter were co-workers so maybe it was a case of office romance.

Chipo’s mother added that Chinyama was using Chipo’s phone to communicate with her relatives and friends while on the run and he did not show any remorse.

This was confirmed by Chipo’s young sister, Yolanda who said:

I was informed of Chipo’s death by Chinyama hours after I had sent her some mobile money. I called her mobile with the intention of confirming if she had received the money, only for him to pick up and tell me that he had killed my sister.

He said to me:

Muri kutotaura henyu zvemari, Chipo afa uyo (You are concerned about money, Chipo is dead).”

We had to call my other sister and her husband to go and check on her. Within a couple of hours, they confirmed that she was indeed dead.

Chipo was laid to rest last week in Bikita, Masvingo.

Today is Teachers’ Pay Day But It Marks 18 Months Without Salary

Today is teachers pay day unfortunately to me it marks my 18th month without salary from my employer who illegally ceased my salary in January 2019 for the reasons of absenteeism on the time when i was abducted and later remanded in Prison .

A disciplinary hearing was conducted in September and a verdict of forced transfer was imposed on me .

I challenged the outcome in the Labour Court and the Government of Zimbabwe requested for an Out of Court Settlement where we agreed and nullified the previous verdict and promised to immediately reinstate my salary, its now four months since we signed the Out of Court Settlement but up to now they have not actioned anything.

The only reason why I’m being frustrated is because of the role i play in representing rural teachers in Zimbabwe.

Soldiers Doing Lockdown Night Patrols Blamed For Graffiti Demanding “Mnangagwa To Go.”

Own Correspondent

The graffiti on ZANU PF Gwanda offices

Residents of Gwanda have thrown blame on soldiers enforcing lockdown measures for graffiti splashed on ZANU PF offices and streets around the town.

Unknown persons in Gwanda took advantage of the Coronavirus lockdown which sees no-one move around the streets at night to paint graffiti around Gwanda town denouncing the ruling ZANU PF and calling for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to step down.

Residents of the mining town on Monday woke up to find streets, private perimeter walls and even the ruling party offices inscribed with messages denouncing Mnangagwa, Zanu-PF and Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs minister Abednico Ncube.

In social media discussions, the residents claim that the high level of lockdown enforcement especially at night by the soldiers would not have allowed an ordinary citizen to execute the risky act.

“It can’t be anyone else but the soldiers, they are the only ones moving around town at night, ” said one resident.

However, sources within ZANU PF said they suspected rival opposition MDC Alliance supporters for the graffiti.

“You can see the timing of the graffiti is meant to divert attention from the business of the day. However, we would like to warn the opposition that we would not be distracted by their antics but remain with the people and help them with the fight against COVID-19 as well as improving their livelihoods,” he said.

MDC Alliance officers at the opposition party offices in the town rubbished the sentiments from ZANU PF saying it could have been disappointed ZANU PF supporters or just hungry and angry citizens.

The Zanu-PF source dispelled claims that the work could have been triggered by factional fights in the ruling party

“That is pure imagination and day-dreaming. There are no factions in Zanu-PF. Everyone rallies behind our leadership led by President Mnangagwa who is also our 2023 presidential election candidate. Those who wish the party to have factions may they go hang,” the source added.

Furore Over Byo Mayor’s Move To Lease Council Land For $165 A Month. (Not Clear If Its US Dollars Or Zim Dollars)

State Media

Councillor Solomon Mguni

THERE has been a public outcry after the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) offered the Mayor, Councillor Solomon Mguni 3,5 hectares of agricultural land in Lower Rangemore under a 25-year lease at $165 per month rent.

Residents accused the local authority officials of abusing privileges and parcelling out land to cronies at what they described as ridiculously low rentals.

However, some agronomists have argued that the council rentals are much higher than those charged for State agricultural land leases.

Some residents have widely circulated on social media an advert confirming the 25-year land lease being offered to Clr Mguni, arguing that it is tantamount to corruption.

According to the notice flighted on May 29, Bulawayo Town Clerk Mr Christopher Dube revealed that that Clr Mguni has been offered a land lease in Rangemore for agricultural purposes on plot Lot 3 of Lot 3 Lower Rangemore.

The lease is for an initial 25-year period while monthly rentals are pegged at $165, subject to review.

The notice states that residents objecting to the proposed lease should submit their written submissions at Tower Block by end of today at the Director of Housing and Community Services offices.

The land should only be used for agricultural purposes.

Mr Dube yesterday said he can only comment after the closure of the period for objections.

Clr Mguni said the offer was above board.

He said his application was born from his passion for agriculture.

“I’ve a passion for agriculture so I applied for land just like any other resident of Bulawayo. Council has an urban agriculture masterplan, so I applied just like any resident could have done. The processes went through all relevant committees and I did not influence the allocation. I was not even in any committee that discussed the matter and when it was brought before the full council meeting, I was not there. To me I think this was above board,” said Clr Mguni.

He said residents have a say on rates or rentals charged for council land hence it was their right to query the rentals if the felt they were too low.

Residents said it did not make sense that council leases prime land for as little as $165 a month for 3,5 hectares.

Mr Methuseli Moyo, whose interests are in farming, said the lease fees were ridiculously low and could result in residents thinking that they kept them that way in order to corruptly benefit.

He said council should review its tariff structure and charge commercial rates for agriculture land in order to realise real value from this finite resource.

“The rates are just too low considering the rates being charged by some farmers who are leasing their farms. This can lead residents to conclude that council officials are deliberately charging low rates so that they benefit from leasing the land for commercial purposes,” he said,

Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA) coordinator Mr Emmanuel Ndlovu said they will object to the lease offer.

“We are objecting as residents outlining our reasons including abuse of privilege. We are of the view that he is abusing his privilege as Mayor given that no individual monthly council bill is less than $300 per month. What then is the justification to charge $165 a month for 3,5 hectares? Council should be utilising such land to generate revenue instead of abusing the land to benefit a few,” said Mr Ndlovu.

He said as an association they were not aware of the criteria used to allocate land.

“Are the council officials the only ones who applied for those properties? Is it not a conflict of interest where properties are given to individuals who decide how much should be charged as rentals?” said Mr Ndlovu.

An agricultural expert who declined to be named for professional reasons said while it might seem as though the mayor is being offered land for ‘a song’, the rentals are way higher than what is charged for State land.

“I’m a beneficiary of State land, I received five hectares from Government and I am paying just $5 per hectare for the whole year. I believe what council is charging are very competitive rates for agricultural land.

“I also understand that after council increased its rates people like the mayor with 3,5 hectares will be paying $1 600 per month. What is appearing in the advert for objections are old rates,” said the expert.

Matabeleland North Provincial Agritex officer Mr Dumisani Nyoni said the last time he checked, State land was being leased for about $5 per hectare per year.

Unexpected Combination, Bank Employee, Police Inspector And Vendor Fraudulently Steal $158m From Bank.

A People’s Own Savings Bank (Posb) employee is accused of conniving with a senior police officer and a vendor to tamper with the bank’s system and transferring different amounts defrauding the bank of $158 million in the process.

Mercy Meda (34) who was stationed at Causeway Building, Assistant Inspector Tawanda Martin Mavhiya (40) and John Nyika (26) allegedly tampered with the POSB banking system.

The unlikely trio, appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Barbra Mateko charged with fraud.

Alternatively, they were charged with unauthorised access to or use of a computer or network. The trio was not asked to plead to the charges.

The State led by Mr Lancelot Mutsokoti opposed to granting of the trio’s bail saying they were a flight risk.

Mr Mutsokoti also told the court that there was overwhelming evidence against them in the form of receipts of items purchased from proceeds of crime and cellphones used in the commission of the alleged crime.

The State also claims to be in possession of text messages between them when planning to commit the offence.

Meda, through her lawyer, told the court that she was not linked to her co-accused.

She also told the court that she was sleeping at home at the time when the offence was allegedly committed.

Mavhiya and Nyika, through their lawyer told the court that they were not a flight risk.

Mavhiya said he was about to resign from the police service after serving 19 years.

He said he cannot afford to lose his pension and benefits by running away from a weak case.

Magistrate Mateko granted the trio $5 000 bail and the three will report once every fortnight at the police.

Four other alleged accomplices to the offence are still at large.

Circumstances leading to the trio’s arrest are that they connived with four others who are still at large, to defraud POSB.

In pursuant to their plan, on June 13 Meda allegedly made a $32 million deposit into Mavhiya’s bank account.

On the following day, Mavhiya and Nyika went to TM Supermarket in Borrowdale, OK Supermarket in Harare’s city centre and Spar Sam Levy where they purchased groceries worth $6 768.

Meda is also alleged to have deposited $30 000 into Audrey Nhokwara, Harzel Makarawu, Tanaka Trevor Muradzi and Chipo Fifteen’s bank accounts.

On June 15, the POSB international banking manager, Caroline Magonera, reconciled transactions that were made on June 13 on the general ledger account.

The court heard that Magonera noted that there were some transactions with high values, which had irregular sources.

Magonera is said to have notified the POSB authorities who then managed to reverse $156 690 000 from five accounts.

On the same day, Mavhiya and Nyika were arrested, leading to the recovery of groceries worth $4 264, 68.

A Hot Bullet Will Go Through Mnangagwa’s Flesh, Prophet Claims

Below is part of the claim and a warning by US preacher Nathan Hambyrd on how ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa could die.

Speaking earlier in the week, Hambyrd said Mnangagwa will be caught by hot bullet.

Said Hambyrd, “Mr Mnangagwa, your thievery, your ungodly life, your murders, your abductions, your rapes, your pillaging, your immorality, your promiscuity, your devil worshipping, God is going to take your breath from you, a hot bullet will find you.

MDC Trio Apply To The High Court For Bail

Own Correspondent

The three MDC activists arriving at the Harare magistrates court.

Harare West MP, Joanna Mamombe and two female MDC Alliance activists, Netsai Marova and Cecilia Chimbiri have approached the High Court seeking bail.

The trio is facing allegations of communicating false statements prejudicial to the State after alleging abduction and torture by suspected security agents last month.

They have been languishing in prison since they were denied bail Monday by Harare magistrate Bianca Makwande on the basis that they were a flight risk.

At the High Court, the activists’ lawyer Alec Muchadehama argued the magistrate erred in denying his clients bail.

“Beneficiary Of Relief Can Not Be Distressed How Much Relief They Are Getting,” Govt Speaks On US Dollar Temporary Allowance To Civil Servants.

State Media

Ambassador Jonathan Wutawunashe

THE US$75 Covid-19 relief allowance for civil servants, which was announced by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development is really nothing to write home about but just a temporary measure to cushion workers against ongoing price increases, a top official has said.

Secretary for the Public, Defence, Police and Prisons and Recreational Service Commissions Ambassador Jonathan Wutawunashe said yesterday the Government introduced the US$75 allowance for civil servants and US$35 for pensioners as a provisional measure to ease the anguish on its employees who are confronted with exorbitant prices in shops.

“The rationale of that Covid-19 allowance is the anguish that has been reported by civil servants; it is the challenge that people are facing at the point of sale. So supporting livelihoods at the point of sale is the purpose of that cushion of US$75. However, the US$75 is not going to be in my hand, it is going to be in a nostro account. It will be issued with a card that one can swipe at the point of sale,” said Ambassador Wutawunashe.

This will be done to ensure that the money remained in the formal system and does not leak onto the black market.

Ambassador Wutawunashe said the Government, through relevant authorities, is in discussion with banks to ensure that the opening of nostro accounts that requires a deposit of between US$10 and US$20 does not chew into the cushioning allowance.

“Every civil servant is requested to open a nostro account and arrangements will be made, and I am sure proper communication will be made to the banks to facilitate opening of the nostro accounts. We are going to workout the details with all stakeholders to ensure that there is soft landing to ensure the intention of the allowance is not lost because it is a cushion, it is a relief measure that is supposed to address the livelihood requirements of civil servants and their families,” said Ambassador Wutawunashe.

Allying fears of some sceptics, including civil servants in the Apex Council, Ambassador Wutawunashe said the Government decided to swiftly intervene to bring relief to its workers who were suffering from constant price hikes.

“I am not sure that when the Government recognises a problem that has to be addressed immediately, that impacts on livelihoods, that the Government’s move to bring relief should be subject to debate and criticism. I am not so sure that a beneficiary of relief will be distressed that they are getting relief. What the Government has done, does not in any manner shape or form or cancel the engagements that Government will definitely have with the Apex Council.

“That is why the US$75 measure is clearly an interim measure that is tied to the Covid-19 challenge right now. It does not in any way make a statement about the National Joint Negotiating Council, which is still the valid forum for engagement between Government and representatives of workers. There is no government that would say just because there is a mechanism that can be activated tomorrow, the pain of today cannot be addressed,” he said.

Apart from rolling out the Covid-19 cushion allowance, that will be reviewed in three months’ time, the Government also announced a 50 percent salary hike for its workers and also pledged to introduce non-monetary benefits that will be announced in due course.

With the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) announcing that from Tuesday next week auctions of foreign currency will be used to set the exchange rate — the volatile black market rate that has been used by some shops to benchmark their prices is likely to be reined in, meaning the cushion allowances will come with real value for the Government employees.

Zim Hits Record Covid-19 Confirmed Cases In One Day.

Twenty new Covid-19 patients infected within Zimbabwe are among the record 62 confirmed cases registered yesterday.

The other 42 were among returning citizens and residents in official quarantine centres, where most of Zimbabwe’s cases are caught, justifying the official policy of using centres to quarantine all returning residents for at least eight days, although most people testing negative on two tests are allowed to finish their 21-day quarantine at home.

Infections within the centres can be quickly isolated and so do not spread into the community.

According to the latest daily update from the Ministry of Health and Child Care, of the 524 antigen-based (PCR) tests done yesterday, 24 returnees from South Africa tested positive while others were from the United States (5), Zambia (4), Lesotho (4), Botswana (3) and Namibia (2).

But the other 20 infected within Zimbabwe are the ones who require immediate follow-ups and which are of greater concern to health authorities. Already these authorities know that nine of the 20 are contacts of known patients, but investigations are now in progress to find the source of infection in the other 11.

Zimbabwe now has 463 cases with 171 of these in Harare, 58 in Bulawayo, 50 in Masvingo, 46 in Matebeleland South, 40 in the Midlands, 36 in Mashonaland East, 24 in Mashonaland West, 18 in Manicaland, 11 in Matebeleland North and nine in Mashonaland Central.

There are 396 active cases with the bulk being in Harare which has 143, followed by Bulawayo with 47, Matebeleland South 46, Midlands and Masvingo with 37 each, Mashonaland East 30, Mashonaland West 22, Manicaland 18 and Mashonaland Central, and Matebeleland North with eight each.

Among the 63 who have recovered so far, 26 are from Harare, 13 from Masvingo, 10 from Bulawayo, six from Mashonaland East, three each from the Midlands and Matebeleland North, and one each from Mashonaland Central and Mashonaland West.

Four people have so far died, two from Harare and one each from Bulawayo and Mashonaland West.

Zim Inflation Now At 785% – Zimstats

Zimbabwe’s inflation rose to 785.55% year-on-year in May from 765.57% the previous month, Zimstat said on Tuesday, as citizens grapple with rising prices of basic goods and a weakening currency.

On a month-on-month basis inflation slowed to 15.13% from 17.64% during the same period, said Zimstat.

Mashakada Invites Chamisa To Join Khupe As MDC Alliance Is Reducing His Chances Of Ever Being The President Of Zimbawe.

Own Correspondent

Tapiwa Mashakada

Hatfield MP Tapiwa Mashakada who recently dumped the MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa for Thokozani Khupe’s Supreme Court assembled MDC-T of 2014, has called on his former colleagues in the MDC Alliance including Chamisa to move over to the Khupe party.

In a statement on social media, Mashakada urges for the reunification of the MDC left behind by founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai claiming that all those who are urging Chamisa to stay away from the group are misinforming him.

Reads the statement:

Clarion call to All MDC Party Structures and the 2014 National Council: “Munhu wese mugango/Umuntu wonke embizeni”

The MDC party does not have a substantive leader until the Extra Ordinary Congress chooses a new Leader. The shenanigans that happened after Tsvangirai’s death were all nullified by the Supreme Court. These were:
(1) Chamisa’s takeover and his Congress
(2) Khupe’s Congress

True Democrats must accept the ruling of our courts and comply with the Supreme court ruling. All accusations about some people being sell-outs or bought by Zanu PF are immaterial. It is cheap policking. Let MDC leaders walk the talk on democracy, rule of law and constitutionalism. The MDC family must unite, go to Congress and choose a new leader to replace Morgan Tsvangirai and reaffirm the original position that MDC is a labour backed party, a social democratic party and not a neo-liberal party. The Congress must reposition the new MDC as a Pan-Africanist party with known national values and footprints in Africa. But most importantly, a party that is non tribal, non racial, non sexist. A party with a rural support base. The cabal that is ill-advising my young brother Advocate Nelson Chamisa are making his political Waterloo and spoiling his chances of ever becoming the President of Zimbabwe.

Covid-19: 2200 More Returnees Expected From South Africa.

State Media

File Picture of Kembo Mohadi

Thousands of Zimbabweans who were stranded in China, the United States and in neighbouring countries such as South Africa due to Covid-19 lockdowns have registered with the Government to be repatriated as quickly as possible, Vice President Kembo Mohadi has said.

Vice President Mohadi, who is the chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on Covid-19, told the Midlands province Covid-19 provincial taskforce at the Zanu PF Winery Conference Centre in Gweru yesterday that Government will assist in repatriating Zimbabweans that want to come back home.

“Some are stranded in China, United States and want to come back. In South Africa we have received over 2 200 who have registered with our embassy to come back home and yes they are coming home,” said Vice President Mohadi.

“The greatest challenge we have is that of returning residents, those coming from South Africa, Botswana and all over the world. On Tuesday, we received about 281 Zimbabweans who were in cruise ships in Miami in the United States and we have been receiving such kinds of people from all over the world.”

Vice President Mohadi said the country was putting in place mechanisms to receive all returnees without them passing on the virus to other people in the country as they were coming from Covid-19 epicentres.

“Our people are coming from epicentres of Covid-19, America is hard hit, UK is hard hit, China is hard hit,” he said.

“So, we had initially converted our schools and colleges into quarantines and isolation centres and with them opening now, we have a problem of where to house them.

“We are even receiving convicts by the way, and they are unruly, so I am told. Some of the schools they were quarantined have complained of vandalism.”

Vice President Mohadi said to date, 171 returning residents had escaped from quarantine centres across the country.

“I think 171 have absconded and only 30 accounted for,” he said.

“When they abscond, they go and mingle with other people in communities and if they are positive, there is higher risk of them infecting others.

“The PMD (Dr Reginald Mhene) said they are sending samples to either Harare or Bulawayo and that takes time. If it takes time like that, people start to abscond, people know that they are supposed to be there for 21 days and when time expires, obviously they are tempted to abscond.

“I am not saying they must do that. People need to know that if they abscond, they are killing other people. So, this is one of the greatest challenges we have.

“Our brothers and sisters in Botswana and South Africa haven’t been assisting us because sometimes we find buses with 200 people at the same time at the border and we have to look for transport, accommodation.

“So, we need alternative accommodation for these people.”

Vice President Mohadi said Government adopted classifying the returning residents according to provinces and putting them into buses to their respective provinces.

He said the Government had to rope in medical personnel from the uniformed forces after it became clear that the Ministry of Health and Child Care was getting overwhelmed.

Vice President Mohadi toured Gweru Provincial Hospital, the Infectious Disease Hospital in Ascot and Midlands State University Incubation Hub.

Former Herald, Standard Reporter Dies

Former Herald reporter Cornelius Nduna (49) collapsed and died at his house in Gletwyn, Harare, yesterday morning in what has been described as a case of sudden death.

The journalist collapsed while working on his laptop computer and was rushed to St Joseph Clinic in Shawasha Hills, where he was pronounced dead.

Family spokesperson and Harare City Council director of health services, Dr Prosper Chonzi, confirmed Nduna’s death, saying he had no previously known health complications.

“It was what may be called a sudden death. We are deeply shocked because he was working normally at the family home he had just finished building with his wife when he collapsed. His body has been taken to Nyaradzo Funeral Parlour and we are awaiting the post mortem results,” said Dr Chonzi.

Born on November 19, 1970, Nduna worked for various local newspapers, including The Herald and The Standard, where he distinguished himself as an investigative reporter.

He later worked in South Africa as a media trainer and for international news organisations such as Associated Press and Sky News, mainly as a freelance journalist.
Nduna is survived by his wife and fellow journalist Vongai Makamure.
The couple had two children.

Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) secretary-general Foster Dongozi described Nduna’s death as a very sad day for Zimbabwean journalism and a great loss to the industry.

“We have lost a pillar. Journalism is poorer following the loss of our comrade.

He was a gentleman and a professional journalist who moved seamlessly through the public and private media and became an international correspondent.
“Rest in peace the Bull Eland,” said Dongozi- The Herald

Testing has established that another patient is fully recovered, bringing the total of confirmed recoveries to 63. The country’s death toll stands at 4.

By yesterday the global death toll from Covid-19 reached 449 898 from 8 397 036 confirmed cases.

It is generally accepted that because of undertesting, far more people have been infected although because all deaths from all causes in all countries now have to be certified, the Covid-19 death toll statistics are accurate- The Herald

Zanu PF Harare Province has issued a prohibition order against its District Coordinating Committee (DCC) chairman Godwin Gomwe for indiscipline pending a determination by the ruling party’s National Disciplinary Committee (NDC).

The ruling party’s interim chairperson for Harare Metropolitan Province Oliver Chidawu said the province wanted the party to suspend Gomwe because of various acts of indiscipline.

“We have submitted our recommendations to the National Disciplinary Committee to suspend Gomwe from carrying any party activities until he is cleared of charges levelled against him,” Chidawu said.

Chidawu signed the prohibition letter accusing Gomwe of posting statements on social media that “tarnish and or defame the characters of some senior party officials namely Chidawu, Kazembe Kazembe — provincial chairman for Mashonaland Central, Biggie Matiza, provincial chairman Mashonaland East and Mike Madiro, provincial chairman Manicaland.”

“You posted several social media messages that went viral accusing the above of not defending His Excellency the President when he was under attack in the old dispensation,” said
Chidawu.

According to the letter, a meeting of the provincial co-ordinating committee that was held on May 28, 2020 resolved to have Gomwe suspended.

“The meeting resolved to recommend to institute disciplinary proceedings against you by the National Disciplinary Committee, said Chidawu.

Contacted for comment, Gomwe dismissed the suspension letter saying as acting chairperson Chidawu did not have authority to institute disciplinary proceedings against him.

“Yes, I received a prohibition order from the acting provincial chairman Chidawu, he said.

Unfortunately he does not have the right to give me a prohibition order since he is not a substantive chairman. I will carry on with my duties as the DCC 2 chairperson.”- The Herald

Zimbabwe Sugar Association Statement On Shortage Of The Basic Commodity

ZIMBABWE SUGAR ASSOCIATION STATEMENT ON THE SUPPLY OF SUGAR….

The Zimbabwe Sugar Association (ZSA) has received numerous enquiries on the availability of sugar in the local market and has also noted, with serious concern, that some retailers and wholesalers are trading sugar at prices way beyond the recommended levels and in some cases with consumers being made to pay in foreign currency notwithstanding the fact that the industry sells and delivers sugar in Zimbabwe dollars.

It has, therefore, become necessary for the ZSA to advise our valuable customers and interested stakeholders as follows:

  1. Sugar packing and distribution operations were indeed briefly disrupted during the third week of March 2020 and the first week of April 2020 as the Millers and Refiners were implementing, at short notice, robust measures to protect the more than 20 000 employees from the COVID-19 pandemic.

This resulted in some delivery backlogs to key wholesalers and retailers right across the country.

  1. We are pleased, however, to inform all our valued customers that the sugar industry successfully recalibrated its operations and that all the necessary interventions are in place in order to mitigate Consequently, all backlogs have virtually been cleared and normal deliveries are being scaled up to ensure that all areas across the country are fully serviced with immediate effect.
  2. We are also pleased to advise that the 2020/21 sugar milling season started successfully and on schedule and that the Sugar Mills are currently operating at full capacity, with no major bottlenecks. The sugar industry expects to produce around 455 000 tons of sugar this season, compared to 441 000 tons in the prior season.

We, therefore, call upon all stakeholders to desist from speculative buying activities and implore wholesalers and retailers to continue selling sugar at the recommended prices.

The sugar industry has resolved to monitor the situation on an on-going basis in order to encourage orderly behaviour in the trade.

The sugar industry will suspend supplies to all those wholesalers and retailers identified as being involved in hoarding and/or speculative activities involving our products.

Man Reveals Why He Stole Bible

Bible

A Chipinge man was sentenced to an effective two years in prison after he broke into the home of a schoolteacher and stole the Holy Bible.

Dingani Mucheto (21) and Simon Gwenzi Chibhoso (19) of Musimbo village under Chief Mapungwana were sentenced for unlawful entry and theft by Chipinge magistrate Joshua Nembaware.

Prosecutor Timothy Katsande told the court that the duo broke into the home of Edith Kaziboni, a teacher at Mundanda Primary School and stole property worth $3 400 on 13 April.

Mucheto and Chibhoso were arrested following a tip-off from members of the public.

Investigations led to the recovery of some of the property and it was later revealed that Mucheto only stole the Bible.

Asked by Nembaware why he had stolen only the Bible, Mucheto said:

I stole the Bible because I just liked it. I fell in love with it, that is why I took it.

However, on convicting the pair, Nembaware noted that they were acting in common purpose.

He sentenced each of them to 36 months of which six were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

The magistrate also suspended a further six months on condition they restitute the complainant jointly or severally, $2 600 through the Chipinge clerk of court on or before August 28 this year- NewsDay

Villagers Resist Eviction From Ancestral Land

NATIONAL, BUSINESS, BREAKING

Villagers in Chilonga, Chiredzi in Masvingo Province have threatened to drag the government to court over the planned eviction meant to allow Dendairy to embark on a lucerne grass project.

Through lawyers from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), the villagers wrote a letter a fortnight ago to Local Government minister July Moyo challenging the planned ejection.

Reads the letter in part:
We have been instructed to request your office to furnish us with information in your custody and control, which our clients are entitled to in terms of Section 62 of the Constitution within 14 days of your receipt of this letter, which relates to the following: confirmation of whether or not villagers in Chilonga Communal Area will be displaced to pave way for a lucerne production project, government relocation plan for the Chilonga community and issues of compensation in case of displacements, how the government is going to engage the local community over the ancestral land (and) copies of all documents relating to the transaction between the ministry of Local Government and the Lucerne investor.

The villagers said that they were not consulted, they were not informed of where they will be relocated and how they will benefit from the project adding that the move ejects them from their ancestral lands.

They are also worried that the government will leave them stranded as was the case with victims of Tokwe-Mukorsi floods- Daily News

Man Sentenced To 30 Years In Prison For Killing Wife

A MAN from Inyathi in Matabeleland North who fatally struck his ex-wife several times with an axe on Christmas Eve in 2018 after she had ended their marriage has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for murder.

Vincent Ndlovu (39) of Plot Number 9, Diglis Park, Famona in Inyathi, was customarily married to Hlengiwe Moyo and the couple was on separation at the time she was killed. Moyo, then 26, had moved out of her matrimonial home to live with her parents in a nearby village.

Ndlovu armed himself with an axe and followed her to her parents’ homestead where he struck her several times in the presence of minor children aged 14, six and two years.

Ndlovu was convicted of murder with actual intent when he appeared before Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Maxwell Takuva who is on circuit in Hwange.

The judge said Ndlovu killed a defenceless woman because he could not accept that she had left him.

He sentenced him to an effective 30 years in jail.

Prosecuting, Mr Bheki Tshabalala said Ndlovu sneaked into a kitchen hut where his ex-wife was sleeping at night and was positively identified by the deceased’s 14-year-old younger sister.

Three other minors were in the same hut.

Private Schools May Soon Open

State Media

Cain Mathema

Government is impressed by the progress made by most private schools in preparing to re-open under Covid-19, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Ambassador Cain Mathema has said.

Minister Mathema said this in an interview after a closed door meeting with the Zimbabwe Independent Private Schools Association. He said the meeting was part of wider consultations that were being carried out by his ministry.

“The private and independent schools initiated the meeting and l was very happy. They came to present how ready they are, their state of preparedness when schools re-open. Some of the schools are even manufacturing face masks and sanitisers,” he said.

The meeting was conducted in the presence of Health and Child Care Ministry officials.

Zimbabwe Independent Private Schools Association chairperson Mrs Salome Mutsinze said the meeting was necessitated by the general consensus on adverse effects on the prolonged closure of schools due to Covid-19.

“The agenda was to appraise the ministry on the degree of preparedness of safe reopening of our member schools in a phased approach starting with examination classes.

“In line with the WHO guidelines on the fight against Covid-19 pandemic some of the highlights on safety procedures and precautions to be enforced include all staff and learners should undergo rapid testing,” she said.

Other measures that schools are supposed to implement are regular fumigation of facilities, temperature tests thrice a day and ensuring there is a response team and isolation facilities in case of suspected cases.

Mrs Mutsinze said the effects of the schools’ closure on pupils are child abuse, child labour, unwanted pregnancies and marriages. Maranatha Group of Schools founder and chief executive Dr Samuel Mudavanhu said as an institution they are more than ready to have their exam classes in place.

“We are more than ready to have our students on campus. We have put all measures in place as recommended by the World Health Organisation and in line with our line Ministry as well as that of Health and Child Care,” he said.

Harvard Junior School Head Loice Magweba said as a day school when it comes to transportation of their learners they will sanitise their buses twice a day.

“We will also have the opportunity to check temperatures when learners and staff are boarding the bus,” she said.

“We are also very conscious to look at the staff and we sourced the PPE’s for them. All staff members are going to be tested of Covid-19 and will undergo training through the Health and Child Care Ministry about how they are supposed to handle suspected cases.”

Knostics Academy head Mr William Mukuwapasi said they will operate according to President Mnangagwa’s proclaimed guidelines.

“I want to reassure every learner and parents that as an academy we are now ready for reopening. We make our own sanitisers, face masks which we can use to allocate to our learners and staff,” he said.

Army Says Reports About Its Officers Are Out To Incite An Uprising.

ZNA soldiers at training

The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA)said on Thursday it is concerned by increased falsehoods being published against the organisation, highlighting these were meant to incite mass uprisings.

The ZNA cited recent reports which claimed that disaffected members had descended on Bulawayo and beat up innocent civilians in apparent protest against a purported salary cut.

In a statement, ZNA deputy director public relations Major Alex Zuva said the army was a professional organisation which conducted its operations in line with its Constitutional mandate.

He said most of the misinformation was being peddled mainly by online news agencies.

“There has been an increase of negative stories of late in which the media has tried to be subversive and capitalise on the hardships that have been caused by the Coronavirus induced lockdown to raise public emotions and anger against the army and the government,” he said.

“On Tuesday 16 June 2020, the Bulawayo24.com ran a series of stories to the effect that the army had taken over the city of Bulawayo. This is a blatant lie as the army was and is still assisting the police to enforce lockdown regulations in order to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The same publication went on to proffer possible scenarios that could have led to the so called takeover by theorising that the soldiers were angry because of the pay cut. Note that there was no salary cuts to the soldiers or civil servants. The back pay was communicated when it commenced and it has always been public knowledge that it was going to end in May 2020.”

Major Zuva said the army stood guided by its Constitutional mandate to safeguard the territorial integrity of Zimbabwe.

“The army knows that there has always been an agenda to link members of the defence forces with negative issues as part of the calculated regime change agenda. All operations that the army carries out are sanctioned and in line with its constitutional mandate which is to ensure the safety of the public and their property. In no circumstances does the army go about beating innocent civilians as purported in the series of false stories on the so called Bulawayo takeover,” he said.

John Bredenkamp The Man Who Had Strong Relations With Both Ian Smith And Robert Mugabe

Daily Maverick

John Bredenkamp

John Bredenkamp has died.

He is a notorious figure in the world of international clandestine deals. A known smuggler, tobacco and arms trafficker, sanctions-buster and occasional businessman, Bredenkamp made a fortune across various industries despite being at the centre of numerous criminal allegations throughout his career.

The soft glow of nostalgia is already evident on social media posts that recall Bredenkamp’s rugby playing days in Rhodesia and support until recently for his Zimbabwean alma mater Prince Edward School. But the facts are glaringly contrary – Bredenkamp’s fingerprints were to be found over decades on the scene of economic crimes that resulted in human rights violations. This is his legacy.

Bredenkamp is alleged to have assisted numerous pariah states to bust sanctions. Zimbabwean-born, Bredenkamp managed to find favour in the inner circle of both the Ian Smith and Robert Mugabe regimes. He has admitted to having assisted Smith, the prime minister of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in the 1970s, to break international sanctions in order to ensure that the colonial regime remained armed. Despite this history, Bredenkamp was able to form a relationship with Mugabe as the new head of state, which allegedly included the provision of financial and logistical support to Mugabe’s regime. This included a role in the illegal exploitation and plundering of the natural resources of the Democratic Republic of Congo between 1998 and 2003.

The relationship resulted in Bredenkamp being added to the United States sanctions list, a decision which the European Union and Switzerland shortly followed. Bredenkamp’s legal team eventually had his name and companies removed from the European lists, but he remains on the US Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctions list.

In addition to his support of Mugabe, he also allegedly supplied arms to both sides during the Iran-Iraq war. Perhaps most important for present purposes, he also sought to bust sanctions with the South African apartheid government. Declassified South African military documents show that Armscor agents approached Bredenkamp in 1982 in an attempt to procure 20,000 flamethrowers. He agreed to take part and provided fraudulent end-user certificates in order to bypass the arms embargo. Thankfully, the deal fell through when Belgian authorities unknowingly intervened and halted the transport process. Nonetheless, it remains horrifying to imagine the suffering that could have been caused if flamethrowers had found their way into the hands of a regime which did not value black lives and deployed troops readily to townships during this time.

These connections with the South African military establishment mean it is little surprise that Bredenkamp is implicated in the post-apartheid arms deal scandal.

Arms Dealer, John Bredenkamp Dies Aged 79.

John Bredenkamp

John Bredenkamp, a controversial millionaire businessman who captained the national rugby side before independence has died, the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) announced on Thursday.

He was 79.

“It is with a heavy and sad heart that the president of the ZRU announces the sad passing of our former Sables player and captain John Bredenkamp this morning,” the ZRU said in a statement.

One of Zimbabwe’s richest people, Bredenkamp was reputed to have amassed a personal fortune of US$870 million from activities such as sanctions busting on behalf of the Rhodesian regime, tobacco trading, arms sales and diamond mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Born in Kimberley, South Africa, in 1940, Bredenkamp moved to Zimbabwe with his parents as a child, and worked in the tobacco industry after finishing high school at Prince Edward in Harare.

“Corruption Is Killing Us,” MDC Alliance: Press Conference On The Current National Crisis

Fadzai Mahere MDC Spokesperson

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, in the interest of time, I am going to get straight to the point.

Over the last few weeks, we have seen a blatant attempt by the State and its proxies to keep us distracted by side-shows masquerading as national issues.

However, on behalf of the 2.6 million Zimbabweans who put their faith in the MDCAlliance we are putting the state and all its operators on notice. We will not be distracted from the real issues bedevilling our nation.

The real issue is that Corruption is killing us.

Let’s start with the numbers:

In 2017, US$2.7 billion disappeared under Command Agriculture. Of that US$2.7 billion, US$1.5 billion was withdrawn on a single day, the 27th of December 2017.

In 2018, US$3.5 billion dollars was unaccounted for under Command Agriculture.

We await the next Auditor General’s report but anticipate this pattern of state looting
will continue.

7.7 million Zimbabweans face food insecurity in a nation of approximately 15.6 million people.

This means that an estimated 5.5 million people in rural Zimbabwe and a further 2.2
million people in urban Zimbabwe are facing food insecurity over the next year.
When the MDC trio demonstrated against this hunger, they were abducted, tortured
and sexually assaulted. They were persecuted for speaking out on behalf 7.7
million Zimbabweans. Corruption is literally starving us.

63% of Zimbabweans live below the poverty line. Despite the over US$6billion that has been poured into Command Agriculture, Zimbabwe faces, what the UN has described as, its worst hunger crisis in a decade.

The UN went a step further to classify this crisis as “man-made”.

According to the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, women and children
are “bearing the brunt of the crisis” with 90% of children aged six months to two
years not consuming enough food.
29.9% of urban households are cereal insecure.

Corruption is killing us.

Mr Mnangagwa signed the Zimbabwe Domestic and Humanitarian Appeal for
Assistance in April 2020 appealing for a total of US$2,2 billion worth of
humanitarian aid over the next 12 months.
Of that money only US$955,67 million is required for the food insecurity response.
This is far less than the US$3.5 billion looted under Command Agriculture in 2018.

In fact, the entire amount requested in aid for 2020 is less than what has been spent
propping up those who benefit from looting money under the Command

Agriculture scheme.
This has not only left us unproductive but extremely vulnerable.
In Mr Mnangagwa’s appeal for US$2,2 billion I have referred to, US$37 million6
was requested for health yet we have seen the attempted looting of contracts up to
the value of US$60 million due to dubious procurement processes and the
insatiable appetite of those right at the very top.
Prisca Mupfumira is alleged to have looted funds from NSSA in excess of US$95
million. The amounts looted through these corrupt acts would have been enough to
fund health assistance over two times over; yet Mrs Mupfumira walks free. No
accountability. No political will to bring her or her accomplices to book.
In the past few weeks, Covidgate has implicated senior government officials
including those at the very, very top yet all we see are theatrics, weak
investigations and the arrest of the smallest, weakest, least powerful fish.
o Why is Obadaiah Moyo walking free?
o Why is George Guvamatanga walking free?
o Why is Mthuli Ncube walking free?
o Why is Collins Mnangagwa walking free?
Corruption is killing us.
In 2019 we saw allegations of 17 000 tonnes of maize being imported from Tanzania
at US$600 a tonne while world prices were at US$240 a tonne. There was no
investigation into this allegation and the public is still left wondering who
organised this contract and who benefits from it?
According to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) itself, quoting
Transparency International Zimbabwe (TIZ), Zimbabwe loses at least US$1.8
billion a year to corruption. This figure is conservative.
Corruption is killing us.
Quite simply, the State has employed all manner of distractions disguised as foiled coup plots, army backed takeovers of private property, RTGS payments dressed as USD allowances, and many other theatrics. However, we say unequivocally: we will not be distracted. Corruption is killing us!

Way forward

We want decisive and tangible action.
We demand a public, televised inquiry into the Covidgate Scandal
We are sick and tired of corruption being swept under the carpet and the perpetrators
of corruption being exonerated behind closed doors to the detriment of the citizens.
It is the citizens that the pay the price for the looting, so we demand answers. It is the
citizens who bear the brunt of the bad governance, so we demand accountability.
Corruption is killing us.
If ZACC cannot act independently and transparently it should be disbanded. We are
tired of the catch and release strategy being employed when dealing with the most
damning corruption scandals. The true independence of ZACC must be part of a
raft of wider political reforms.
If corruption is everywhere, but ZACC is mute, the inescapable conclusion that the
public will reach is that this important institution in the fight against corruption has
become captured. We want ACTION because corruption is killing us. Arrest the
big fish. Investigate the cases thoroughly.
o Where is Prisca Mupfumira?
o Where is the NSSA investigation?
o What is being done to investigate corruption at ZINARA? At ZIMSEC and
at all the parastatals that were named in the Auditor General’s report?
The Auditor General does all the work, but her reports gather dust and are not
followed up by any meaningful investigation, prosecution or conviction.
Corruption is killing us.
In terms of s255 of the Constitution, ZACC has a duty to not only investigate
corruption but to expose it as well. We have not had a single exposé of corruption
from ZACC. Not one. Yet we know, from the Auditor General, from our
journalists, from reports from the IMF, the UN Special Rapporteur on Hunger and
our own lived daily experiences that Corruption is killing us.
Billions are being lost each year and there has not been a single call from ZACC for
the looters to pay back the money. We make that demand now. They must pay
back the money because corruption is killing us.
We demand the strengthening of the National Prosecution Authority. It should not be
an arm of the president’s office. In terms of section 260 of the Constitution, the
Prosecutor General (PG) must exercise his or her functions impartially and without
fear, favour, prejudice or bias. The PG is accountable to the public. In terms of
section 260(2), the PG must formulate and “publicly disclose” the general
principles by which he or she decides whether and how to institute and conduct
criminal proceedings. We demand an explanation as to why top govt officials have
not been arrested. What principles are protecting those at the top? Why are they
allowed to steal with impunity? Yet, MDC Alliance members who protest hunger
are arrested, abducted, tortured, sexually assaulted then re-arrested? The citizens
have to know, in fact, we demand to know, what principles, are guiding the
functions of the NPA as it carries out what are meant to be its constitutional
functions? Corruption is killing us.
In parliament we are going to push for amendments to the Public Finance
Management Act so that there are consequences for those who do not comply with
the requirement to timeously report and account to Parliament on government
spending. There has to be a personal cost and personal liability to these leakages
caused by corruption and maladministration.
We demand that every public officer must declare their assets as was promised in
January 2018 and this disclosure must be made available to public scrutiny and
