China Under Fire Over Faulty Test Kits Said to be 30 Percent Effective

China in an embarrassing situation as Spain returns its faulty Coronavirus test kits that China had supplied. The local news agencies reported the quickest test Coronavirus screening kits China provided to Spain and the Czech Republic are defective.

“First they send us the virus, then they sell us the medications to stop it and then defraud us. It’s great for China,” said a guest in a panel discussion on a broadcast on the Spanish TV channel La Sexta.

Spanish medical researchers analyzed the 9,000 kits China issued last week. They stated that the probability of detecting the virus is 30%.

“They are useless,” said Victor Jimenez Cid, a senior professor in microbiology at Madrid’s Complutense University. An effective test must have a 70% to 80% probability of detecting the virus, Cid said.

According to the local Czech news, this month, China shipped up to 80% faulty mobile quick Coronavirus research kits. In 10 or 15 minutes, the tests show results, but they are typically (inaccurate) than other tests. The nation now tends to focus on conventional laboratory experiments, where they conduct around 900 a day, due to the extreme error rate. The conventional testing takes four hours to portray results.

The Health Ministry of the Czech Republic spent $546,000 for 100,000 test kits while the Interior  Ministry paid for the remaining 50,000. The Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Jan Hamacek, found many of the samples faulty. He blamed it on incorrect methodologies.

“In my opinion, this is not about some scandalous revelation, it is not working,” Hamacek said.

According to the Spanish newspaper El Pais, Italy tested for the virus with purchased quick test kits from Chinese company ‘Bioeasy’ and diagnosed only 30% of virus cases correctly.

Spain’s Head of Center for Safety Warnings and Emergencies, Fernando Simón, said SSIDCM checked the 9,000 test kits. The center instructed the Spanish Society of Infectious Disease and Clinical Microbiology to carry out studies. The studies show a huge risk of error and, therefore, test kits should not be used.

The Chinese embassy tweeted, “Shenzhen Bioeasy is not allowed to market products and is not among the “recommended suppliers” list which China provided to the Spanish government by its trade ministry.” Spain’s Health Ministry stated the EU Quality Control Agencies accepted Bioeasy goods. The requirements of this study, at least the lot which was issued, do not conform to the certificates of the EU standard.

On Friday, Spain’s health officials desperately needed supplies and protested it was not working. A Chinese corporation promised to replace thousands of faulty Coronavirus test kits.

According to the Health Minister, Salvador Illa, the first shipment of 640,000 test kits had “insufficient capacity” to accurately identify sick patients. Reuters cited the Chinese research kit manufacturer, Shenzhen Bioeasy Technology, attributed the incorrect findings to a failure to obtain or use samples properly.

Bioeasy’s failed test kits were a devastating drawback for Spain’s health authorities. They are battling to contend with far more than 64,000 COVID-19 cases and over 4,900 deaths.

Health Ministry Releases Latest Coronavirus Statistics

THE number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in Zimbabwe has risen to seven, with one of them having succumbed to the disease.

In a statement yesterday, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr Agnes Mahomva said out of 188 tests conducted as of Friday, seven were positive, 181 negative.

“The ministry would like to report that today (yesterday) the National Microbiological Reference Laboratory tested 65 samples. Two of these tested positive for Covid-19.

“Among the 65 samples tested today, was the repeat test for the sample from the individual whom we reported previously as having received an inconclusive result. Today he tested negative for Covid-19.

Therefore, to date, Zimbabwe has seven confirmed cases of Covid-19, including one death,” she said.
Former journalist, Zororo Makamba died of Covid-19 in Harare on Monday.

Dr Mahomva said the third case they reported on Wednesday was the following day admitted for treatment under isolation at Beatrice Road Infectious Diseases Hospital.

“He remains in a stable condition and is assisting our teams in intensified surveillance through contact tracing. The ministry continues to be on high alert to the Covid-19 pandemic,” she said.

Dr Mahomva urged Zimbabweans to remain vigilant in the prevention of Covid-19 and practise good personal hygiene including washing hands with soap and water frequently or use of an alcohol-based hand rub.

She encouraged covering one’s nose and mouth with tissue paper or flexed elbow when coughing and sneezing and avoiding close contact with people who are sick, coughing or sneezing.-State media

National Soccer Team Players Raise US $ 5000 Towards Jaure Medical Expenses

FOREIGN-based Zimbabwean footballers have come together to raise funds towards Dynamos captain Partson Jaure’s medical expenses, with the defender to undergo an operation in Harare this morning for head injuries sustained in a car accident a week ago.

Jaure suffered head injuries when he lost control of his car near Prince Edward School in the early hours of last Sunday.

So far, national team players have raised
US$5 000 towards Jaure’s medical costs.

The initiative to come up with funds for his medical expenses was started by the Desmond Maringwa-headed Footballers Union of Zimbabwe.

Maringwa yesterday said the national team players have come up with the money, which will cover Jaure’s medical expenditure and for his recuperation after the operation.

Jaure’s club Dynamos also chipped in to assist their captain.

“A total of US$5 000 has been raised so far by the national team players and it’s still being raised.

It’s for paying for part of the medical bills and also for his rehabilitation after the operation and Dynamos paid also for part of the medical bills as well. Operation will be done tomorrow (today) at 9am at the Health Point Hospital,” Maringwa said.

He commended the national team players for displaying the spirit of togetherness in coming to the aid of their teammate.

“The players have really showed the true spirit of ubuntu.”

England-based midfielder Marvelous Nakamba last week used his official Twitter account to wish Jaure well. He also posted a picture of him and Jaure in Warriors colours.

The Aston Villa star said he cannot wait for Jaure to get back to his usual life once he has gotten over the difficult period.

“Partson Jaure my brother, I’m praying for your speedy recovery and strength throughout this challenging episode of your life. I can’t wait to see you swing back to your normal self once again. Get well soon my fellow Warrior,’’ posted Nakamba.

Highlanders striker Mkhokheli Dube yesterday also used Twitter to wish Jaure a prompt recuperation.-State media

Relief As Dybala Recovers From Coronavirus Attack

Juventus forward Paulo Dybala, one of the highest-profile players to be infected with the coronavirus, has started training again after recovering from the illness which he said left him struggling for breath.

Dybala is one of three players at Juventus who have tested positive for the virus alongside defender Daniele Rugani and midfielder Blaise Matuidi, a World Cup winner with France in 2018.

Players at other Serie A clubs have also tested positive.

“I’ve had strong symptoms, but I’m much better today,” Dybala (26) told the Juventus television channel.

“Now, I can move and walk and try to work out. A few days ago, when I tried to do those things, I was struggling for breath. My muscles ached.”

Coronavirus Cases Shoot Up To 1187 In SA

The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases has increased to 1187, the minister health confirmed on Saturday evening.

The number of confirmed infections this afternoon stood at 1170 after 31 people recovered from the virus. One person was confirmed dead on Friday.

Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said the latest figures don’t necessarily mean there’s a decline in the infection rate.

“We must outrightly state that these numbers do not indicate a reduction in the number of infections. “It is merely a reflection of positive results that were received, verified and ready for today’s reporting,” Mkhize said in a media statement.

First Covid-19 patients were women, aged 28 and 48
He expressed concern about infections relating to healthcare workers in both private and public hospitals.”This includes doctor and nurses. We mention this because health workers are in the frontline of this battle. They are exposed not only to their families but to the patients who they are meant to treat,” he said.

Some of the confirmed COVID-19 cases that involve health workers included in Limpopo, one medical doctor tested positive after he had travelled abroad for holiday started experiencing symptoms on his return.

“He immediately decided to quarantine himself. This young doctor remained in quarantine to ensure that he does not transmit the virus to other people. His 14 day quarantine period has ended and we are pleased to report that his results have now been confirmed negative,” said Mkhize.

In Mpumalanga, one medical doctor who had also travelled for a holiday abroad returned to the province with symptoms which emerged a few days after he returned.

“Before then, he had been having interactions with staff and patients. He then tested positive and was quarantined.

“This led to other health workers who had come into contact with him to be screened, quarantined and tested. A decision was also made for that section of the hospital to be closed in order to disinfect it.

“This has been completed and it will be reopening during the course of next week. “In Free State, we have received a report that three doctors, one nurse and one neurophysicist have tested positive for COVID-19.

“In Gauteng, six medical doctors have been infected in Gauteng,” he said. –Sowetan

Pastors Ask For Tithes In Ecocash Money

Tithes, the lifeblood of most churches, will be paid through mobile money while services will be livestreamed as churches prepare for life during the nationwide lockdown, with most congregations moving a step ahead as they had already suspended services for this weekend.

President Mnangagwa announced a nationwide lockdown on Friday evening that kicks off midnight today, as the country steps up efforts to confront the deadly Covid-19 (coronavirus). Before the announcement that will leave only a few essential services running, most churches had already announced the cancellation of services.

The Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church cancelled its weekly service yesterday as it prepared for a lengthy period of long-distance worship with congregants encouraged to turn to digital platforms.

“To promote social distancing and minimise the spread of the virus, members will worship privately in their homes. Necessary support in the form of livestreaming, downloading or printed worship packages and sermons will be availed to members through their pastors in order to facilitate similar worship and study themes for church members until the end of the lockdown.

Offertory readings will be given out to members through the same channels for their convenience,” the head of the SDA Church in Zimbabwe, Pastor Micah Choga, said in a statement.

It was a message echoed by the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops Conference (ZCBC) General-Secretariat, which also urged members to join their priests in Mass from their homes.

“All priests should, however, continue to celebrate Mass in their parishes without a congregation on a daily basis. The continuing celebration of Mass ensures that the faithful can be joined in the spiritual communion with the priests of the Church . . . Knowing that the Mass is being celebrated, joining in spiritually in that celebration; watching the livestreaming of the Mass where possible; following its prayers, making an act of spiritual communion: this is how we will share in the sacrifice of Christ in these days,” the ZCBC General-Secretariat said in the statement released last week.

A member at the church in Bulawayo revealed that they would be pooling together their tithes and offerings on a weekly basis to make sure that the church runs smoothly even during the lockdown.

“At the end of the day some might think that our church elders love money but the truth is that our churches run from hand to mouth. So, what we did when we had our executive meeting is we made a resolution that since we have a lockdown, we have zones that go into zonal prayers every Tuesday. Each zone has 10 to 15 families.

So we can put together our offerings and tithes and send to the church administration.

This will ensure that we have money to sustain the church because there are bills to be paid,” he said.
The leader of the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) in Southern Africa Reverend Sikhalo Cele said his church would not congregate until the situation normalises.

“We will continue with the shutdown until it is resolved. We will only change our stance when we get new knowledge that is grounded on scientific and empirical evidence,” Reverend Cele said.

Reverend Eustice Ginya of the African Methodist Episcopal Church said they had instructed congregants to pay their offerings and tithes through a merchant code, as the church has suspended services.

“The upkeep of the church is still important even in such a time. We have resolved that while we won’t physically be at the church people can still pay their tithes which are important in the running of the church.

“So, we have given congregants our merchant lines and they can contribute through those platforms but we don’t know if they will comply,” he said

The leader of Harvest House International Church, Bishop Colin Nyathi said they would be running a virtual church for the next three weeks, as what defined the religious institution was its members and not the building they congregated in.

“We will now be running what we can call a virtual church. The church is not the building but rather the people, the congregants. So, while we might not be able to gather in one place anymore, we will still be running our church services through the various digital platforms that we have always had at our disposal. The building might be shut but worship does not stop.” Bishop Nyathi said. -Sunday News

Zanu PF Accused Of Using Coronavirus To Plunder National Resources

By Antony Taruvinga

For those of us who have a deeper understanding Zanu PF mentality, there is absolutely nothing to celebrate about the return of US dollar.

Of course, they took the advice from the MDC but we did not say just bring the US$ alone and every will start working.

The economy is not a currency, a currency only reflects the state of the economy. Without addressing the macro economic fundamentals and the legitimacy question, forget about the economy.

The people must never trust this government with foreign currency deposits. They are actually looking for the US$ to finance their lavish lifestyles.

They will let you do deposits, allow you to withdraw some, it will come a time – mostly when foreign currency deposits are enough for themselves – to raid all foreign currency accounts and replace balances with useless ZW$.

As COVID-19 wreaks havoc, it’s time for Zanu PF to make money.
It’s no coincidence that they lifted the ban on the US$- at the same time refurbishing a COVID 19 facility for the rich.

They are ready to loot all COVID-19 donations…

Latest FIFA World Rankings

Mighty Warriors continue to drop on the Fifa Rankings after moving two places down to number 111 on the latest table released on Friday.

The national women’s team was last involved in action last year in the 2020 Olympic qualifiers in which it failed to fulfil some of the assignments due to budget constraints.

No games were arranged in the following months, leaving the team with no opportunity to improve on the ladder.

In Africa, Zimbabwe slumped by place to number 15 while Nigeria retained the top spot on the continent.

USA remained unchanged on number 1 on the World Rankings.

Meanwhile, Zambia who qualified for the Olympics are the biggest movers, climbing six places up to number 100.-Soccer 24

Lockdown A Blow To Struggling Economy

By Obey Tererai Sithole MDC Youth Assembly Chairperson

21 day lockdown as announced by Mr Mnangagwa appears to be a good idea in the interest of containing the spread of the deadly corona virus which is claiming lives worldwide, both young and old, tall and short, rich and poor etc.

In the wake of this crisis it is only logical to suggest a lockdown as an immediate measure to maximize on discipline amongst citizens and minimize the spread of the virus thereby saving the precious lives of citizens.

However, while the lockdown appears to be noble, in our Zimbabwean context it becomes a heavy blow to the same human life that ought to be saved.

It is an open secret that our joblessness reality reached alarming levels a long time ago and this has seen a greater chunk of young people resorting to informal trading as a way of survival, every dollar that comes in the pocket is a result of their hands on hustling.

Thus, a mere announcement that turns a blind eye to livelihood realities is just but a genocidal pronouncement, the young people may survive the virus but will certainly not survive the starvation and insolvency that awaits them for the coming 21 days.

We therefore urge the authorities, in their illegitimacy to put in place measures that will support people’s livelihood during this period.

On another note, knowing the barbaric behavior of most of our security services personnel, we are deeply concerned about lock down period, memories of the past sends shivers to many.

We have seen our sisters being raped in the past and people being mercilessly beaten, we therefore urge the officers not to take advantage of the lock down enforcement and reduce it to a period of serious human rights violations.

After all having been said, stay safe fellow youths, Zimbabwe still needs you after all this.

Military Plotting To Kill Thabani Mpofu in Learnmore Jongwe Style

Members of the Zimbabwe Military Intelligence are allegedly plotting to abduct famed lawyer Advocate Thabani Mpofu the same style they did the late MDC Spokesman Learnmore Jongwe, sources have revealed.

The method will not be as simplistic as you think, one source told ZimEye on Friday.

“They will create an entrapment that will make no trace for evidence,” they said adding that Jongwe did not killed his wife, as alleged. They did she was stabbed by state agents and the blame put on Jongwe.

In the latest development, South African based businessman Ali Naka has posted on Twitter that, “Military intelligence sources have told a very reliable lawyer that the system wants to abduct Advocate Thabani Mpofu and journalist Hopewell Chon’ono during the Lockdown period.

@daddyhope is accused of posting a tweet where Mpofu said he will lead folks to the Sakunda clinic.”

We Let Her Down: We Should Hang Our Heads in Shame!

By Nomazulu Thata| It’s high time we put our act together and we assist our daughter Chantelle Muteswa dear Zimbabwean women. We can’t let the girl fight such a brutal war on her own without assistance from Zimbabwe women’s organisations.

That interview Chantelle Muteswa gave today with the Media in Harare should put all of us who call ourselves women activists in shame. If we are not vocal currently in her life’s trying situation, she was brutalized by the father of her son and as if it was not enough, the man violentlys snatched her son away from her: what stories catch our attention then and move us to act?

NOMAZULU-THATA

When do we say, this story is worthy of Zimbabwe’s women organisations if Chantelle’s saga we have before us does not make us rise to act on her behalf? At least some emotional support would go a long way in comforting her, knowing that she is not alone in all this live drama with nerve-racking trauma she is going through. We women of Zimbabwe are absent: Zwla, Wcoz, Women in coalition Zimbabwe, where are you!

Are we women in Zimbabwe comfortable in our skins seeing a young woman putting up a fight like no other to get her son back, snatched away by Buyanga? I am sure most of us in these women’s organisations are mothers. Have we ever thought through the whole story and imagined it was ME. I am sure that interview will bring many women to tears. When I saw her crying, I cried too. Crying is good, but we need action from Zimbabwe women’s organisation and put sense in our unruly and deranged men who think they own the Zimbabwe justice system.

I am deeply concerned about us Zimbabwean women and how we view each other as women especially when one of us is in distress. Women’s organisations are organisations that are meant to speak on behalf of other women in distress, especially young vulnerable women. I do not see any solidarity coming from the women’s groups in Zimbabwe in the case of Chantelle Muteswa. We should be ashamed of ourselves for letting such a young woman down. Chantelle is literally crying for assistance and we refuse her that much as women. Chantelle is kicking and screaming, and we do not hear her cries! How fearful are we of the powers that be to let a young woman down, no emotional support of any kind is visible coming from women’s organisations?
When the First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa had marital problems with her husband or she had challenges with her security details, the women’s organisation never said a word. Again, there was a case going on regarding Senator Tambudzani Mohadi and her divorce with her deranged husband, Kembo Mohadi: The Vice President of the Republic of Zimbabwe; we did not hear a word from the women’s organisation. We took it that those were high profile cases that would scare anyone living inside Zimbabwe to act or utter any word.

But curiously, Mrs. Sithokozile Chamisa was humiliated by her husband at a rally in Harare. Suddenly the women’s organisations were present. Somehow, they saw the humiliation of Thoko. The women’s organisations were active once more. They spoke loudly and demanded to hear from President Chamisa why he did what he did, to humiliate his wife at the glare of the cameras. They needed answers from Chamisa. Really!

What about Senator Tambudzani who was nearly shot with a gun by her husband? Her house was broken into using an axe. Did we hear a word coming from the women’s group in Zimbabwe? What about Merry Chiwenga, did we hear anything from the women’s organisations?
Again, coming to Mrs. Merry Chiwenga’s dramatic divorce with her husband, Merry did not get enough support from women in Zimbabwe, I must say.

Curiously Merry’s case received sympathy mostly from Zimbabwean men of all classes. I remember reading Trevor Ncube’s Twitter: he said, what is happening to Merry can happen to anyone. Recently, this women’s holy month of March, there was a video that circulated and made rounds: a video of a man who was in total support of Merry Chiwenga.

Here is a Zimbabwean man quoting CEDAW, a Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Violence Against Women. He based his argument on this convention, this really touched me but at the same time disappointed that our women’s organisations, well versed with this convention, do not give any kind of solidarity, even slender one to Mrs Merry Chiwenga as a woman.

Zimeye social media has been working on these stories for some time now. He gave several publicities about Merry Chiwenga and Chantelle Muteswa. He is, again, highlighting the case of Chantelle Muteswa and her brutal assault by her former lover on his social media: twitter and Facebook. We give applause to comrade Simba. These are men among men who have the courage to stand for the rights of women in a men-dominated, patriarchal society like our own. We encourage you Simba and many of your kind to continue stand to stand on our side and assist us in fighting domestic abuse in our Zimbabwean societies.

I am indeed humbled by that kind of moral and emotional assistance coming from our menfolk. Many women instead, vilified Merry, called her all sorts of names we can think of. The moment a woman is involved in a divorce in Zimbabwe, the H-word automatically comes in to the divorcing woman and not the man.

A man can never be a “Hure” (Whore) by Zimbabwe standards. It is not surprising to find that it is the women in most cases who will be using that “Hure-Word” to insult another woman in distress. There is a place in hell for women; a place where all women who treat other women badly or speak ill of other women will be sent. Vayiskwe munzwimbo yekutambudzika.
Curiously, this lack of solidarity among women is mostly found in African societies and families equally. African women are hard on other African women and very judgemental too. If an African woman is not in trouble of any kind, her language use becomes polarized; she is quick to judge. If anything, we should learn from other societies about solidarity with women against patriarchy and all other forms domestic violence against women. Solidarity with women did not mean necessarily agreeing with the way of life of that woman at all. Solidarity is above any form of judgement and confines of diverse ways of life. In solidarity with other women, we should see a woman who is in distress and not her lifestyle before she was in trouble.
Chantelle Muteswa needs our genuine support today.

We must be there for her even if we cannot assist tangibly, some emotional assistance will go a long way in comforting her in her distress. What is happening to Chantelle can also happen to any other woman in Zimbabwe: said Trevor Ncube. We have seen what happened to Senator Tambudzani Mohadi. We have just witnessed a nasty divorce still on-going case of the Chiwengas. Let’s trust our instincts dear ladies. Our voices carry a lot of power. Let’s stand up for women in distress they need our irrevocable support to maintain their sanity in times of such adversities Chantelle finds herself in.

Our silence means a lot: it may mean we support Frank Buyanga. Frank Buyanga is failing to comprehend that he is putting his son in great risk of emotional trauma, a situation that can be solved amicably. What that child has gone through will never be made right the whole of his life.

Parents do not realize the damage they inflict on the offspring they purport to fight for in the first place. This tug-of-war between Chantelle and Frank is uncalled for when we think of the damage it is doing to the growing up child they purport to love dearly.
Our justice system is failing Chantelle too. In a hungry country like Zimbabwe whereby some elements in the justice system depend on corrupt hand-outs from clients to give a boost on their merger salaries, there is hardly a chance of Chantelle ever getting justice: but her case is so easy. If the child is born out of wedlock, Frank has no right to the child. The law in this case is twisted and turned to favour clients that are financially able to corrupt those back-handed judges or magistrates in charge to execute cases.

The women’s organisations are challenged to stand up for Chantelle Muteswa. How many tears should she shed until we know that she has suffered horrendous domestic abuse: just like Tambudzani Mohadi, just like Merry Chiwenga. All these women need our irrevocable support from all of us women of Zimbabwe.

Lockdown With No Water And Electricity!

Zimbabwe has imposed a nationwide lockdown for 21 days from Monday to help curb the spread of coronavirus, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said on Friday.

“Only state and health workers will be exempted from the lockdown,” said President Mnangagwa.

Zimbabwe has five confirmed coronavirus cases, including one death.

Many have questioned how a lockdown will work with the water and power crisis. Bulawayo, the second largest city, has gone for eight days with no water while electricity can go for up to 18 hours in some cities.

Zimbabwe had already forced some sections of business to cut down on Thursday.

FBC, one of the leading banks in the country, announced through SMSes that it was closing Centre branches earlier on Friday.

“We are temporarily closing FBC Bank Centre branch. Please utilise our e-banking channels or any FBC branch within the CBD.”

COVID-19 has been declared a formidable epidemic disease in terms of the Public Health Act, allowing the Minister of Health and Child Care to make sweeping regulations to control the spread of the disease and to have designated medical officers order the compulsory testing, quarantining, isolation and treatment of anyone who is exposed to infection or is confirmed as infected..

The new Public Health (Covid-19 Prevention, Containment and Treatment) Regulations 2020 were gazetted on Monday and are valid until May 20, although they then may be extended a month at a time.

South African Opposition Party Leaders Tests Positive For Coronavirus

Reverend Kenneth Meshoe

The ACDP on Friday confirmed that its leader Reverend Kenneth Meshoe and MP Steve Swart had tested positive for Covid-19.

The two were tested after it emerged that they had attended an event hosted by the Divine Restoration Ministries in Bloemfontein this month.Five others who attended the event – which also had guests from the United States, Israel and France – had tested positive.

On Thursday, well-known pastor Angus Buchan announced he had tested positive after coming into contact with infected people at the same event.”Rev Meshoe displays no symptoms and remains in good health. Mr Swart, who has experienced mild flu-like symptoms, is recovering well. Both have been self-isolating, together with their close families,” said ACDP deputy president Wayne Thring.

Thring also complained about delays experienced by Meshoe in getting his results, saying it took five days for the ACDP president to know his status.

Meshoe told News24 on Thursday that he had been told that there were “technical difficulties” and that he would have to wait a little longer to get his results.

“This has placed unnecessary stress on him and his family, and has also resulted in unwarranted speculation in the media,” said Thring.

The ACDP deputy also stressed that Meshoe did not know of his status when he attended a meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa a week ago.

Open Letter To The Soldiers And Police As Zimbabwe Locks Down, “Mnagagwa And Zanu PF Don’t Love You.”

Dear Soldiers and Police

I write to you from the fringes of dispair and desparation. I am both frustrated and angry. Yet at the same time my heart is bleeding and crying for you and all other Zimbabweans. I am writing using my personal experiences with Coronavirus, I am in it. I am living it. I have seen how ravaging it is. I am seeing it destroying might cities and bringing down to mother earth very powerful countries. I have fought it too and with the grace of the lord and HIS wisdom I conquered. So I know what I am talking about!

I also know exactly what is going to happen to my beloved Zimbabwe in the next few weeks. You can call me a prophet of doom or a pessimist but right now I don’t care what name you give me. Please know that Zimbabwe , God forbid, will soon become the epicenter for the Coronavirus. I am not a witch doctor nor am I one of the “churchprenuers” who “for-tell and for-see” events. But using science, common sense and assumed knowledge I see what has happened in Wuang, in London , in Rome, in New York happening in Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare very soon.

Why do I say saw? The government that you have supported and propped up is not ready for this disaster. Despite God giving us ample time to prepare when the virus broke out in China our biggest trading partner whose nationals travel frequently to Zimbabwe and ofcourse thousands of Zimbabwe students and traders frequent China. Common sense should have prevailed and measures should have begun in earnest to be put in place. But like the late Edison Zvobgo once said, “ common sense is no longer common” When Britain, America & South Africa our biggest tourism partners were hit , shouldn’t your Commander in Chief have closed our borders? His biggest mandate is to protect and serve (save) the nation of Zimbabwe and its citizens and isn’t that your mandate too!

This is not politics nor is it finger pointing, because I’m writing in real time , this is happening now and you and me can still do something about it. We can stop this rot right now, stop it and put in measures that makes sure Zimbabweans will never have to feel so exposed and so abandoned. So it’s not politics, It’s the thousands of lives that we are possibly going to lose in the next few weeks. It’s your relatives , your children , your parents and friends who are going to perish. It is your country that is going down! The country that you took oath to defend with your sweat and blood. Your country is under siege by a very visible enemy. Rise up Cde! Worse Cdes this might be your life. Are you safe in the barracks? Do you have food to last you a week in quarantine? Do you have proper PPE to use today in the event of you being called upon to serve . ED and Zanu pf cannot protect you from Coronavirus. And mark my words they will send you out with no masks or gloves nor do they have hospitals to take you to if you are hit! You will die like dogs and Mnagagwa and Zanu pf will not shed a tear for you. They need you only to use you when they need you and “discard” you like a used condom. Mnagagwa and Zanu pf don’t love you. Zimbabweans love you and that’s why I’m writing to you. Remember 17 November? The outpouring love and appreciation from the unsuspecting people of Zimbabwe. They thought you had done good for the country only to realize months later that both you and the people of Zimbabwe had been duped. But I’m whispering to you now that we can change this right now!

I was writing in future tense and now I’m writing in present tense! Your commander in Chief must Lockdown Zimbabwe now. ED must lockdown all cities today. ED must declare the state of emergency now so he can deploy you to defend the country and access international help. ED must be the commander and president now! Unfortunately he won’t because he can’t. He doesn’t have what it takes both brains and balls to make sensible and bold decisions! Ever wondered why Mugabe said, “ I didn’t see a successor around me”

Partly ED will not ACT immediately because he is busy taking care of private business! Making sure his hospital in MT Pleasant , it’s equipment and medical supplies are in place for himself , his family , (which is very big by the way) his fellow Cdes, (not you by the way ?) his fellow looters and those connected to the system. You follow that Cde! Now in case you are not aware your commander in Chief cannot travel to Europe or Asia at the moment because he is coming from an designated area! You saw how the USA are evacuating their citizens today ( Friday) as I write. Have you ever seen that before? Even the time when you did your coup no coup and u were deployed armed to the teeth and you rolled armored cars in the streets of Harare past the USA embassy, did you see them evacuate their nationals? You are smart you know the answer- because Coronavirus is bigger than your little-coup-no coup! It’s huge!

People are going to die, I keep repeating this so you get it and I hope you do and you begin thinking of something right now. You and me I repeat again we can still do something that may not necessarily save us from Coronavirus but it will save Zimbabwe from ED and Zanu Pf. Because these two are worse than Coronavirus. It’s time Cdes, Ke Nako! ED AND ZANU PF MUST GO NOW

Until we meet again Cdes in the streets like we did on November 17 2017.

I hope it will be soon after the Coronavirus. We will all be angry enough.

Yours sincerely

With 919 deaths and 5,909 new cases, the number of fatalities and cases in Italy reached 9,134 and 86,498 respectively. With a record 773 fatalities in Spain, its total death toll reached 5,138 along with 65,719 cases, after 7,933 fresh cases were reported on Friday.

US, which is fast becoming the new epicenter of Covid-19 pandemic, recorded 18,691 new cases, taking its total tally to reach 104,126. With 401 new fatalities, country’s death toll reached 1,696.

France recorded 299 new deaths, although less than the previous day, when the country witnessed 365 fatalities. Its number of cases and fatalities, now stand at 32,964 and 1,995 respectively.

Britain, whose Prime Minister and Health Secretary, have both tested positive, saw 2,885 new cases and 181 fatalities, taking its total to 14,543 cases and 759 fatalities.

Fresh steps taken by governments

Ireland, that has reported 2,121 cases and 22 fatalities, imposed a nation-wide lock-down, with Prime Minister Leo Varadkar urging citizens to “stay at home, in all circumstances”, AFP reported.

France, extended its stay-at-home order until at least April 15.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump signed the $2 trillion stimulus package, the largest in the US history, though it’s too late.

“This will deliver urgently needed relief to our nation’s families, workers and businesses. That’s what this is all about”, Trump said.

In yet another unprecedented move, the US President invoked an act usually used in wartime to order General Motors to speed up its commitment to make badly needed ventilators. The move “should demonstrate clearly that we will not hesitate to use the full authority of the federal government to combat this crisis”, Trump said.

In another grim news, the IMF’s chief Kristalina Georgieva announced on Friday that “it is clear that we have entered a recession”, which will be worse than in 2009, following the global financial crisis.

On Friday, the world witnessed 64,500 new cases and 3,273 fatalities due to novel coronavirus.

Chinese Beg Zimbabweans Not To Discriminate Against Them And Fight Coronavirus Together

Chinese Embassy deputy ambassador Zhao Baogang

Independent|THE Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe has called on locals and the Chinese to avoid “prejudice and discrimination” and instead join hands in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.

Chinese Embassy deputy ambassador Zhao Baogang spoke at a time Zimbabwe has recorded seven official cases of the virus with one fatality. So far, 490 144 cases have been reported worldwide while a total of 22 154 people have died from the virus.

A total of 46 African countries have reported coronavirus cases.

The pandemic has in some cases, Zimbabwe included, attracted stigma against Chinese nationals largely because the first case was recorded in Wuhan, China, which became the epicentre of the pandemic before moving to Europe.

The World Health Organisation has warned that the United States could be the next epicentre of the virus.

Zhao said there was a need for unity and cooperation between Zimbabwe and China as they were victims of the virus alongside other affected nations.

“At this critical juncture, we are all victims of the virus because we are all severely impacted. But China and Zimbabwe are traditionally good friends and our relations have been elevated from all-weather friends to strategic partners.

“We supported each other in the past and we must continue to support each other,” Zhao said.

“When China was battling the coronavirus, the President of Zimbabwe (Emmerson Mnangagwa, the Foreign Minister (Sibusiso Moyo) and Information minister (Monica Mutsvangwa) expressed solidarity with China. Most African countries expressed solidarity with China,

“Now that Zimbabwe and other African countries are affected, we are ready to share our experiences and assist with medical supplies including test kits so that we help each other to fight the virus.”

Zhao said Chinese doctors and medical experts recently held a video conference with Zimbabwean doctors and the academia to share experiences so that the virus is effectively fought.

“At this critical juncture we are all victims of the virus because we are all severely affected, but the battle against the coronavirus as well as the significance and importance of a community with a shared future have become very important. Only with solidarity will we be able to prevail against the virus. This is why some statements by some politicians, like the US President (Donald Trump) who have called the virus a Chinese virus or the Wuhan virus are very irresponsible,” Zhao said.

“Even in Zimbabwe, there have been cases where some Chinese nationals are labelled, but we say no to prejudice and the pointing of fingers. Let’s work together and we will prevail because united we stand but divided we fall.”

Zhao said the Chinese government was in the process of shipping medical supplies to help Zimbabwe fight the virus.

Zimbabwe has also received the first batch of Covid-19 medical kits donated by Chinese billionaire Jack Ma.

The consignment of medical supplies was part of Zimbabwe’s share of the 1,1 million testing kits, six million masks and 60 000 hazmat suits and face shields that Ma pledged to donate to all African countries.

The embassy has also mobilised Chinese businesses operating in Zimbabwe to upgrade Wilkins Infectious Diseases Hospital. The companies have donated more than US$500 000 towards the programme meant to boost efforts to control the spread of Covid-19.

Wilkins Hospital was badly exposed when the first cases of the virus were recorded in the country, claiming the life of broadcaster Zororo Makamba.

In a statement this week, his elder brother, Tawanda Makamba, said the family had been disappointed by government’s lies on the country’s preparedness.

The hospital failed to provide Makamba with medication, as well as oxygen or a ventilator to help with his breathing. Tawanda revealed that there were no power sockets in the isolation unit to plug in the ventilator sourced by the family.

The institution also does not have an intensive care unit and does not have enough protective gear for workers.
The Chinese are hoping to upgrade the hospital to match international standards.

In addition, the embassy and Chinese businesses are also mobilising resources to combat the spread of coronavirus in Zimbabwe by, among other efforts, sourcing medical equipment, which includes an oxygen machine, breathing machine, test kits and protective suits, masks and other protective wear for health workers.

Botswana Executes By Hanging Two Convicted Murderers

Botswana Prisons Service has confirmed the execution of Moabi Mabiletsa and Matshidiso Boikanyo, both convicted murderers.

Court of Appeal dismissed their appeal in February 2019.

They were both hanged early this morning.

The killers were convicted in 2017 for the brutal murder of cab driver, Vincent Mopipi, stabbing him 44 times with a knife.

The Botswana CoA bench dismissed their appeal citing that the High Court’s finding of no extenuating circumstances was accurate. Handing down judgement, Justice Zibane Makhwade said the circumstances of court of quo came to the correct conclusion when finding that there were no extenuating circumstances and sentenced both the accused persons to death.

He explained that the prosecution submitted correctly aggravating factors of which included the fact that the murder was not committed at the spur of the moment but was premeditated.

“This was clearly a planned murder. It is immaterial whether one or both accused persons physically inflicted the injuries that caused the death of the deceased (Mopipi). What is clear, however, is that they were jointly involved in the execution of the murder. The first appellant called the cab and the second appellant was in possession of a weapon that was used to kill the deceased. This was clearly a joint enterprise,” Makhwede said.

Makhwade said there is no requirement in law that persons should have known each other for them to form a common purpose. He further submitted that the trial court found that it is the first appellant who arranged for a taxi to collect him from Tlokweng.

“It was further established that he changed the destination from UB to Block 9. The deceased was killed at Block 9. The murder weapon was found in the second appellant’s possession. There is no rational basis for holding that the first appellant parted with the deceased at Block 9 and then the deceased met with the second appellant who murdered him independently of the first appellant.

FIFA World Rankings :Mighty Warriors Fall To Position 111

COVID-19: AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ZANU PF HONCHOS TO STEAL AND ENRICH THEMSELVES

Zimbabwe Already Under Lockdown Since 1 Aug 2018 Military Crackdown No Need To Copy Ramaphosa

Zimbabwe is already in lockdown mode since the 1st of August 2018, the People’s Party has suggested in a series of statements of which the below is the latest.

The party says: “our economy is informal and most informal traders live from hand to mouth on a daily basis, buying food from their earnings at the end of the day. It is irresponsible of government to simply lock these people indoors without providing a solution for their upkeep during such a prolonged period of economic inactivity.”

Full text:

The nationwide lockdown, which is due to come into effect Monday, March 30, is a necessary step in containing the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak. However, the proposal in its current state is poorly considered as the supporting measures around it are inadequate. The government cannot just copy and paste policy from South Africa without taking into account our peculiar and troubled circumstances.

In particular, our economy is informal and most informal traders live from hand to mouth on a daily basis, buying food from their earnings at the end of the day. It is irresponsible of government to simply lock these people indoors without providing a solution for their upkeep during such a prolonged period of economic inactivity.

There is already a humanitarian food-aid campaign being led by the World Food Programme in the country; government must work with the WFP to include the bulk of the urban population which is especially vulnerable. Given the limited logistics capacity as well as the risk of corruption, the ideal intervention would be a crediting of all distressed mobile money accounts with the market equivalent of US$5 per person with parents able to register their children using birth certificate numbers, via the USSD menus provided by the mobile money services.

This amount of money would hardly be enough, and the authorities should go further by suspending VAT and the 2% Intermediated Money Transfer Tax which would immediately increase the buying power of the public.

In addition, all financial obligations falling within or immediately after the lockdown period should be delayed by a period of at least 30 days. This will include utility bill payments, rentals, taxes and any such obligation. In the case of rentals, landlords must be allowed to apply for tax credits against defaults arising from the lockdown period if such a default persists past 45 days.

Finally, we urge the Zimbabwe Defence Forces to conduct their enforcement operations with restraint and respect for human rights.

Sikhala Says Govt Is Not Prepared To Deal With COVID-19

Message to the people of Zengeza West and Chitungwiza :

From Hon Job Wiwa Sikhala.

We the people of Zengeza West and Chitungwiza as the whole, proud of what we are and collectively see our problems together. I do hereby wish you all good health during this difficult period of Covid 19 virus. I think we all see how our nation is so unprepared to deal with this challenge. It is now incumbent upon us to keep ourselves alert to the pandemic by keeping ourselves in hygienic circumstances. Consistent washing of our hands, religiously taking all the medical advice from health experts and the World Health Organization(WHO). Keeping social distance, avoiding gathering that can lead to contamination, avoid places of joy and contact with persons showing symptoms of the virus.

As we all know that this government of ours is not prepared or equipped to deal with the pandemic, lets take precautionary and preventative measures through taking hot tea made up of garlic, ginger, lemon and honey. Simply boil crushed pieces of garlic and ginger mixed with lemon and use honey as the sweetener. Also use eucalyptus oil in boiled water and wofugira. It boasts the immunity from opportunistic attacks.

I love you all and may God protect all of us.

I thank you.

Zim Lockdown: The Negative Implications

By Obey Tererai Sithole MDC Youth Assembly National Chairperson

FULL TEXT: President Mnangagwa’s Coronavirus Statement

NATIONAL, BUSINESS, BREAKING

Worldwide, recovery of severe cases remains slow, with possibilities of relapses being recorded in some parts of the world.

The situation thus remains dire, emphasising to us all that the world is far from turning the corner.

To date, Zimbabwe has recorded 5 cases; one in Victoria Falls and the other four in Harare.

As you are aware, we lost one of our citizens to the virus: a bright and promising young man who today personifies the tragedy wrought by this virus, and what can happen to our hopes and promises for the future, in the absence of due diligence.

While our numbers are both low and for now all imported, this need not induce complacency in us. Covid-19 is now upon us and, if experience elsewhere is anything to go by, can spread in leaps and bounds in so short a time.

We are worried that even as our numbers remain low, there is a possibility of wider community spread and transmissions.

Further, in about two months’ time winter will be upon us, creating conditions ideal for more infections. We thus need to take decisive measures NOW against the pandemic, well ahead of likely danger.

I have already indicated that some of the measures will be drastic and are sure to upset the daily routines of our lives as we have lived it until now.

But they have to be taken, with new restrictive routines internalised by all of us, regardless of position in society.

After all, the virus knows no class, colour, creed, tribe or region. In that regard, discriminating against, or profiling other sections of our community is unnecessary, in fact counter-productive.

Following this week’s Government decision to create an Ad-hoc Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on Covid-19, I have received a handful of situational reports and recommendations from the said Taskforce, including a slew of recommendations, which were tabled today.

The reports point to continued potential grave threats to our Nation, thus requiring that we take further new preventive measures that will help us lessen the risk to all people.

Starting Monday 30th March 2020, and subject to further review, Zimbabwe will be under a total lockdown for a period of 21 days.

This means all our citizens are required to stay at home, except of course in respect of essential movements related to seeking health services; to the purchase and procurement of food and medicines, and for other essential supplies and critical services.

Workers manning our essential services, including health services and outlets, emergency and security services, as well as operation of key utilities like power and water, are exempt from this directive.

To ensure strict compliance, I have directed the National Command Element of our Security Arms to deploy as appropriate in support of Civilian Authority.

Only Civil Servants on duty, in line with decisions and directives of the Public Service Commission, Heads of Ministries and the Ad-hoc Taskforce on Covid-19, will be allowed unrestricted movement.

While funerals will be exempt from the Directive, numbers in attendance should not exceed 50. Visits to hospitals and clinics remain as earlier announced, that is, one visitor per patient, per day.

Motorists seeking to refuel will not be allowed to leave their vehicles.

In respect of open-air markets, only food-related markets will be allowed to operate during this period, even then under watch and direction of health personnel.

Markets and stalls trading in non-food items or commodities will stand closed. Should it become necessary, security forces may be deployed to assist in the enforcement of these and other measures, and for the maintenance of order at these markets.

Until further notice, all public transport operations will stand suspended. Only ZUPCO and Public Service Commission buses will be exempt from the directive.

Even then, all ZUPCO and PSC buses are required to observe and enforce social distance and disinfection guidelines in the course of offering their services.

To the extent that water and ablution services are key to fighting the pandemic, Government and Local Authorities will step up efforts to ensure regular and reliable water supplies to all residential areas. Equally, Municipalities are expected to ensure smooth refuse collection and sewer reticulation services in all areas.

Since information is key to the fight against the pandemic, I have directed Ministries of Health and Child Care and that of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services to work closely together in ensuring that our communities are kept aware and comprehensively informed about the pandemic.

To that end, a toll-free hotline, 2-0-1-9, has been activated for this period and beyond.

To ensure that our hospitals are not overwhelmed and that other normal hospital services are not compromised, more separate treatment and isolation units and facilities will be established either on hospital sites or on other identified centres, whether public or private as designated by the Minister of Health and Child Care.

To expedite testing and diagnostics services, Government will decentralise Covid-19 testing services to provincial hubs throughout the country.

In light of restricted international traffic and trade in goods and services, the Government will galvanise and support local industries, as well as institutions of higher learning, to produce what we can locally.

This includes the manufacture of medicines, sanitisers, personal protective equipment and the setting up of temporary isolation facilities for use during the Emergency.

Let me take this opportunity to thank our business people and international partners for their continued support in our campaign against the virus.

Fellow Zimbabweans, the tasks at hand are huge and varied and do require maximum discipline and support from all of us.

Above all, they require that we put hands on the deck to ensure our response is truly national.

Now is the time to show a unity of purpose, and to put aside unnecessary divisions.

We need peace in our land; we need law and order; above all, we need solidarity and compassion.

As I said in my last address, Government will come down heavily on businesses and individuals alike who dare take advantage of the situation our nation finds itself in, to engage in unscrupulous, rent-seeking behaviour and corrupt activities.

No one should be found hoarding food and other essential commodities.

The long arm of the law will ensure that all those who do not take heed of this warning are brought to book without fear or favour.

Furthermore, legal instruments are being put in place to deal with and punish those who cause unnecessary alarm and despondency through social and other media, during this emergency. We all need to act responsibly.

I continue to appeal to our employers to support and show compassion towards their workforce during these trying times.

On its part, the Government continues to explore more ways of supporting businesses and the economy to avert a recession.

In conclusion, let me once more stress the need for us all to act responsibly, and to maintain high levels of personal hygiene as directed by our health experts. Only that way will we ensure our families are safe and secure.

May God bless us and give us the strength to go through this difficult patch.

“Zimbabwe Scenario Is Pathetic, Will The Lockdown Work?”

Ndaba Nhuku|Can a lockdown work? What should have been done? Copying other countries will not work. There is no food, water, electricity; absolutely nothing to last even a day. And to worse matters, no hospitalisation necessary as hospitals don’t even have basics.

Isolation? Where? Just like SA, folks are already overcrowded in their homes. What will a lockdown do to them when starving? I will not even mention domestic abuse as a crisis on its own.

What our leaders have done then faced with this global crisis? It’s useless merely imitating others as in plagiarising their speeches.

We should have thought outside the global box and laid bare our case and found in-house solutions. Slows thinking and lack of foresight and vision have always been our downfall.

Possible solutions in our no win situation

Emphasis in the form of public information was needed in prevention of infection. Zim govt should have used it’s media channels to advocate for hands washing and advised citizens to set up even rudimentary washing points.

This is a crisis, gallons with holes to let out water for washing hands at market stalls would serve a huge purpose.

Stopping hand shaking and and contact. No gloves to handle items? Wash hands. No masks? Why not make one as we saw folks do in social media. It’s not what shops sell that work; think outside the box by being innovative and creative.

Whatever serves the purpose is better than nothing because we are in a no win situation. Ours is very very desperate situation compounded by those who fled South Africa lockdown!!!

They have worsened and increased the rate of infections since South Africa was already on the rise as a regional power house with superspreaders.

We could not turn back our citizens but should have had information available for them to save their beloved ones by self isolation.

Self isolation of South African returnees needed foresight. There are many schools near in Zimbabwe along the border. Government should have isolated these folks at these schools and cleared them from there.

This is a crisis that needed desperate critical solutions. Government would have fed the folks even with isitshwala and vegetables for the two weeks or whatever period it took to isolate them.

At least the schools have controlled environment with water and toilets and boarding schools have everything needed.
Why allow urbanites to transport the killer virus to our rural areas?

Government should have availed information to urban citizens to avoid going emakhaya and vice versa. This should have happened long ago if we were willing to learn from China.

Instead our leaders like Oppah were busy celebrating the death of western citizens and economies.

Corporate and global appeal. Why did government neglect involving the corporate world and seeking UN help with its own challenging scenario that is unique from many countries?

Zimbabwe will never get its health facilities working overnight, met alone afford ventilators, and hence the focus on basics whilst letting the common man hustle. Water and cleanliness and social distancing are paramount.

Corporate world and UN should have been asked to help most basics like water and maize meals. The world is not cruel in times of need.

Never before has the world been so desperate and hence we needed desperate solutions not similar to everyone’s because we have a unique challenge in that we dont have anything at all. We can’t lockdown starving people!!!

They will not pay heed at all. They will fend for their kids as will do the police and military officers expected to force them indoors.

Sorry, it’s too late the horse has bolted out. I am myself physically and mentally locked down to have written this earlier. But would it have helped anyone.

One soul saved is better than every elderly or individual with some condition condemned to death.

May our gods look after our folks. I love you my hustling countrymen.

We always persevere despite what nature and dictatorship throws our way!!!

I wish you all the best.

By A Correspondent- Beijing has resumed its railway freight service between Wuhan and Europe by delivering medical aid to Germany as authorities work to lift strict quarantine measures after the number of new cases Covid-19 dropped.

A train loaded with medical supplies and construction materials has left a station in Wuhan, the capital city of China’s central Hubei Province, and is set to arrive in the city of Duisburg in Germany in two weeks, Chinese outlet the Global Times reported on Saturday.

The delivery will be the first China-EU cargo freight operation from Wuhan since the city was placed under strict quarantine in January after the Covid-19 outbreak.

China was the leader in the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases for months, until the epicenter of the pandemic shifted to the US, where more than 100,000 people have tested positive for the disease, according to Johns Hopkins University. Italy has become the second-hardest-hit country in recent days with nearly 86,500 cases, surpassing China’s 81,300. -GlobalTimes

“Military Commanders Push For The Sacking Of Heath Minister Over Coronavirus Preparedness Lies”

By A Correspondent- Furious military commanders who attended a meeting of the Cabinet taskforce on Covid-19 on Friday reportedly demanded the sacking of Health Minister Obadiah Moyo as chairman of the taskforce, branding him as “useless”.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa relented to the military commanders’ pressure and promptly removed Moyo and replaced him with Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, who returned from a trip to China on Friday night.

Said a source:

Military commanders who were present were scathing. They said he was useless and had lied about the country’s readiness for coronavirus, particularly conditions at Wilkins Hospital.

The security chiefs to turns to blame Makamba’s death on negligence. They ripped into the health minister who sat stone-faced. They demanded that the president should take charge of the coronavirus taskforce.

Zororo Makamba succumbed to coronavirus on March 23 at Wilkins Hospital after he failed to get meaningful treatment while admitted at the centre.

BREAKING: South Africa Police Arrest 55 Over Coronavirus

PRETORIA – South AFrica’s Police Minister, Gen BhekiCele has confirmed that 55 people have been arrested the first day of the national #21DaysLockdown as police intensify measures to curb the spread of the #COVID19 #Coronavirus.

FULL TEXT: As the national lockdown kicked off on Thursday night, 26 March 2020 at 23h59, Police Minister, General Bheki Cele visited four main roadblocks on the major exit and entrance routes in Gauteng, including the main one on the N1 to and from Limpopo. Minister Cele spent time with the commanders and the members on the ground who are on deployment to operationalise and enforce the lockdown regulations in the strife to curb the spread of the corona virus.

Just under 24 000 members have been deployed where the SAPS is complemented by the SANDF deployment, respective Metro Police Departments and other law enforcement officers.

As soon as the clock struck midnight, vehicles whose movement was in contravention of the regulations, were turned back at roadblocks which were also mounted at the N4 to and from the North West; and on the N3 to and from KwaZulu Natal. The Minister confirmed that a total of 172 roadblocks had been mounted on the main routes countrywide, covering parallel routes to deal with those motorists who attempted to dodge the main roadblocks.

In addition to the roadblocks, police saturated hotspot areas such as Soshanguve where police ensured that known liquor outlets were shut and no selling and consumption was taking place.

Some visits to hotspots were in response to the growing list of tip-offs police continue to receive from caring citizens.

As the dawn of Friday 27 March 2020 broke, members of the SAPS, the SANDF and Metro Police Departments increased visibility and patrols became the order of the day. This resulted in the arrest of 55 people across the country: 20 in Gauteng, 06 of whom were arrested in Alexandra alone and 14 in other parts of the Province; 11 in the North West; 10 in Limpopo; 07 in KwaZulu Natal; 05 in the Free State; and 02 in the Western Cape.

Some of these transgressors blatantly defied the instructions and the lockdown Regulations and engaged in activities such as street-bashes, while some were sitting in groups drinking when it has been emphasised a number of times that the selling and movement of liquor during the lockdown period will be prohibited.

“The intentional contravention of the lockdown Regulations does not only undermine the authority of the State but in fact, undermines the health and the lives of the citizens of South Africa who have during this time displayed goodwill by cooperating with and supporting police efforts to enforce the law,” said Minister Cele, cautioning those who are hellbent on making a mockery of government efforts and turning the spread of the corona virus into a joke.

Minister Cele also assured the country that, “this war we find ourselves in, is not a war against any citizen of this country, but is a war against a common enemy, the corona virus. Whoever breaks the law and chooses to join the enemy against the citizens, will face the full might of the law and police will decisively make sure that we defend the people of South Africa.”

Acknowledging the challenges that came with the first day of the lockdown, Minister General Bheki Cele confimed that talks were underway between the Departments of Police, Trade and Industry, and Transport to address issues experienced in some areas with long queues at shops where people were not observing social distancing rules nor hygiene protocols. There will be continuous assessment of the implementation of the lockdown and measures will be enhanced where the need arises.

The Minister issued a stern warning to those who lie to the police and use the queues at shops and pharmacies as an opportunity to go out for reasons other than acquiring essential goods and/or services. Police are under instruction to deal decisively with such chancers.

The Minister also assured the citizens of the country that police will respond swiftly to all genuine tip-offs.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Police has commended the latest arrest on Friday evening 27 March 2020 just after 23h30, of a 36-year old male from Kanana in Tshwane North, who has been taken into police custody for contravention of the COVID-19 Disaster Management Regulations.

It is alleged that on Saturday 21 March 2020, the first weekend after President Ramaphosa had declared a State of Disaster, the suspect and a group of people were returning from a funeral and gathered at Temba Square for what is commonly referred to as “After-Tears”. It is at this illegal gathering of more than 100 people where public consumption of liquor was taking place, that the suspect allegedly captured himself on video which has gone viral on social media, where he is seen and heard contravening the Covid-19 Regulations.

“This should come as a warning to those who continue to make a mockery of the COVID-19 scourge and undermine the efforts of government, that the law will not be kind to their ilk,” said Minister Cele.

“Seek Aid To Cushion Struggling Masses During 21 Day Lockdown”: Churches Tell Govt

By A Correspondent- Civil Society and Churches Joint Forum (CSCJF) welcomes the government’s decree for 21 days lock-down which will enhance the prevention of infection and control of the novel COVID-19.

We see it is a wise and timeous declaration considering the fact that our people were in harm’s way as they were relaxed and business was usual in the CBDs and apparently no social distancing, negating all the good efforts by the Ministry of Health and Child Care to effectively prevent the infection and control of the corona virus.

For effective 21 Days lock down, we call upon the government to deploy the army for enforcement. People being people will need the army for them to comply as the usual complaints are that should they stay at home they will face starvation as most of them are in the informal sector.

In that regard, we appeal to the government to seek AID for the cushioning of the people.

Rents for April and May may also need to be suspended and the landlords get compensated. Decentralisation of COVID 19 clinics is also needed as soon as possible.

May we as a nation see this decree as a Daniel fast, that from day one of the lock-down, we sanctify ourselves, pray and fast against all that was impeding our nation from progressing.

This is an opportunity for the people of Zimbabwe to not only prevent and fight against COVID-19 but to boost their immunity against the viruses of polarisation, partisan politics, political intolerance, unpatriotism, corruption, sabotage, toxic politics, selfishness, pride and arrogance and the psycho dynamics of self hate and such like.

The 21 Days are to be regarded as a chance for us as the nation of Zimbabwe to collectively seek God and to be in harmony with the goodwill of the spirits of just men made perfect – our Ancestors, so that we emerge stronger, united in purpose, peaceful and ready to prosper.

At the end of these days the people of Zimbabwe aught to have a restored consciousness and mentality that knits them together as one people committed to provide solutions to all the socio-economic and political challenges facing the nation.

It is evident that our economy is not doing well and there are challenges also in the health sector. But this is not time for blame game but to humble ourselves and acknowledge that to all perfection there is a limit but God’s commands are boundless and have none.

If we can kneel down to leave our pride, then in these 21 days our prayers will ascend as sweet insense to the Lord and his eyes will be turned on Zimbabwe.

It’s not a coincidence that the churches are closed too. It is not time to tempt God but for sincere Christians to pray in their closets.

The lock down is to be regarded as NATIONAL 21 DAYS OF PRAYER. The Illusion of Freedom is No Longer Profitable.

If you are not secure in Christ now, redeem the time because the days are evil. Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. God is the ultimate blesser of the nations.

We end by emphasising on the good personal hygiene that was recommended by the Ministry of Health and Child Care;
• Wash hands with soap and water frequently or use an alcohol based hand-rub
• Cover your your nose and mouth with tissue paper or fixed elbow when coughing and sneezing
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
• Avoid contact contact with people who are sick, coughing or sneezing
• Avoid unnecessary travel especially to all countries with confirmed cases of COVID-19

Together we can

Wiwa On Coronavirus, Keeping Social Distance, Avoiding Gatherings | FULL TEXT

Job Sikhala...

CSOs Implore Govt To Disseminate Correct Information To The Public On Coronavirus

By A Correspondent- Civil Society Organisations have challenged the government to disseminate correct information about the COVID-19 pandemic that reflects the situation on the ground.

In a letter to Health and Child Care Minister Obadiah Moyo dated March 24, Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) executive director Roselyn Hanzi urged the government to provide coronavirus testing kits to all the country’s 10 provincial hospitals.

She wrote:

Can you provide further information on issues relating to the following, testing centres, indicators for testing, reaction time, inconclusive results as we have elaborated below?

There is a need to establish satellite testing centres throughout the country. Currently, testing is restricted to Harare and Bulawayo and this poses challenges for those who may need to be tested, but live outside or far away from these cities.

Ideally, testing facilities should be available across all 60 district hospitals. At the very least, due to resource constraints, testing kits should be available at all the 10 provincial hospitals.

Zimbabwe, like the rest of the world, is battling to contain the spread of COVID-19, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa declaring a 21-day total lockdown starting on Monday.

Meanwhile, health officials have revised the number of confirmed coronavirus cases from 5 to 7.-Newsday

Duo Sentenced 70yrs Behind Bars For Killing Good Samaritan

By A Correspondent- Two stranded deportees from Botswana who stabbed a motorist who had offered them a lift in Plumtree before they slit his throat and used tyres and diesel to burn his body beyond recognition, have been sentenced to a combined 70 years in jail.

Mehluli Bhunu (26) of Maronga Village Dete in Matabeleland North and Trust Ngwenya (20) of Lusulu in Binga who killed Memory Deredza, were convicted of murder with actual intent by Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Evangelista Kabasa.

Bhunu was sentenced to an effective 40 years in jail while Ngwenya was jailed 30 years. The duo after killing the deceased, burnt his body beyond recognition and then drove off in his car, a Mazda Bongo kombi which was laden with groceries.

They also stole the deceased’s cellphone.

Bhunu and Ngwenya met Deredza at Maitengwe Border Post soon after their deportation from Botswana and he offered them a lift to Plumtree. Deredza was on his way to Masvingo to return his brother-in-law’s car, which he had borrowed when the accused fatally stabbed him and burnt his body after dousing it with diesel.

In passing the sentence, Justice Kabasa said the murder was committed in aggravating circumstances, which warranted capital punishment.

“You killed an innocent man who had done nothing wrong but had actually offered you a lift and this is a great betrayal on your part. You stabbed the deceased using a knife, which is a lethal weapon. What is even more despicable is that despite the deceased having tried to flee for his dear life, you could not hold back, but instead pursued him,” she said.

“You robbed the deceased’s family of a father, husband, brother and brother-in-law through your wickedness.” Justice Kabasa said the courts have a duty to protect the sanctity of human life through passing harsh sentences.

“The courts have always emphasised the sanctity of life and no one should lose life at the hands of another. Although the accused persons did not show any remorse, but tampering justice with mercy has always been a principle of the courts. “Accused persons deserve lengthy prison terms since they are danger to society,” she said.

“In passing the sentence, we cannot ignore the disparity in the accused persons ages at the time of committing the offence. For these reasons, first accused (Bhunu) is sentenced to 40 years while the second one (Ngwenya) will serve 30 years in prison.”

VP Chiwenga Back From China, Should He Be Quarantined?

By A Correspondent- Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has returned from China where he had gone for a routine medical checkup two weeks ago.

Chiwenga’s return was confirmed by George Charamba, the Press Secretary in the Office of the President. Said Charamba:

I haven’t seen him as yet, but I can confirm he’s back. You’d have heard that on Friday, the president appointed him chairman of the Covid-19 taskforce and that tells you he will hit the ground running.

According to a local publication, Chiwenga’s private jet hired from Dubai landed in Harare at 22.15 PM on Friday, according to flight-tracking websites.

The luxuriously-fitted Airbus A318-112 (CJ) Elite made a stop-over for refuelling in Colombo, Sri Lanka, after taking off from the Chinese capital, Beijing.

VP Chiwenga Has Flown Back Into Zimbabwe From China, Will Things Improve Now?

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga flew back into Zimbabwe from China last night, and will head straight into work, to lead the COVID committee assigned him this week.

Chiwenga was in China on an undisclosed mission and his return is seen by many in government as a sign of good things to come.

His return was confirmed by senior government officials.

Although coming from a high risk country, he was not quarantined. Last week Botswana’s President was went into self quarantine after a one day visit to Namibia.

Analysts aligned to ZANU PF said he will assist the ongoing government efforts to end the CoronaVirus pandemic. Yesterday president Emmerson Mnangagwa announced saying that the country is going into lockdown mode following South Africa’s own announced during the week. Despite Zimbabwe’s political ally, China encouraging other countries to use the model, Zimbabwe is 3 months behind.

Some critics have added saying the latest government move is misguided, and the exiled former Higher Education Minister Jonathan Moyo said in a thread:

A lockdown for its own sake by decree is not how any country has fought the #coronavirus. A lockdown must be a set of SPECIFIC MEASURES to flatten the #COVID19 curve to stem the spread of the virus and protect the people and the economy. Mnangagwa’s decree lacks such measures!

Livelihood issues aside, most Zimbabweans live in the townships, rural areas, compounds and on the farms in spaces that are so crowded that social distancing and isolation to stem the spread of the #coronavirus is not possible without specific and organised govt interventions!

Mnangagwa decreed the lockdown when nurses and doctors are on strike and yet he said nothing about what govt has done or will do to resolve that. It’s just wrong to decree a lockdown to fight the #coronavirus when nurses and doctors, the key responders in the fight, are on strike!

Mnangagwa’s decree did not have the necessary facts and figures on the medical interventions that govt will do during the 21-day lockdown: where will testing for #COVID19 be done and by who? Which health facilities are ready to treat #COVID19 patients and what’s their capacity?

Last but not least, a lockdown to fight the #coronavirus must necessarily come with an awareness outreach programme, based on Zim’s epidemiological profile, that particularly targets vulnerable groups with suppressed immunity due to preexisting conditions, old age and hunger!

24yr Old Zimbabwean Tests Positive To Coronavirus

By A Correspondent- Latest statistics from the Ministry of Health and Child Care reveal that two of Zimbabwe’s confirmed COVID-19 patients are only 24 years old.

In its coronavirus update on March 27, 2020, the Ministry of Health announced that two more people had tested positive, raising the number of confirmed cases to seven.

One of two cases is that of a 40-year old female who was diagnosed yesterday (Friday) and is based in Harare and has not travelled out of the country.

She came into contact with a 52-year-old male who had travelled to Dubai and was confirmed positive for the virus on Thursday. Her condition is said to be stable.

The other case is of a 24-year-old female who is also based in Harare. She has not travelled out of the country and came into contact with the 52-year-old male who travelled to Dubai and tested positive. Her condition is also reported to be stable.

The statement by the Health Ministry further revealed:

Of the cases confirmed to date, three are due to contact with an infected individual locally. Our teams are currently seized with enhanced surveillance through contact tracing, by following up all known contacts of these cases.

Therefore, the Ministry would like to remind everyone of the need to maintain social distancing, by avoiding close contact (I meter or 3 feet) with anyone who is unwell, coughing or sneezing.

Coronavirus Positive Man Flees Gauteng Quarantine, Arrested In Limpopo On His Way Home

It is day two of the nationwide twenty one day Lockdown and it is fair to say that it has come with it’s very own fair share of drama and political uncertainty and South African citizens have been warned and cautioned to stay put in attempt to avoid further spread of the virus and any potential deaths in the process with the viruse seeming to have no limits to the chaos and mayhem it is causing worldwide.

It has been reported that an unnamed gentleman had tested positive for the Coronavirus in Gauteng province but instead of following the neccessary and relevant procedures of self isolation took matters into he’s own hands.

Limpopo Health department spokesperson Neil Shikwambana says “The Covid-19 patient had tested positive for the disease in Gauteng and blanked self isolation to instead go back to his home village in Limpopo province outside Tzaneen”.

Zweli Mkhize Gave A Wrong Statement On South Africa Covid 19 Deaths.

On 27 March Dr Zweli Mkhize had announced that the department of health had reported 2 death due to COVID-19 in South Africa. This was broadcasted with no exhaustive examination on the cause of death on one of deceased individuals who was suggested tp have died of this pandemic. These individuals died in different places, one at a private hospital and the other passed on at a public facility.

Thursday evening; health ministry came back to the media to give an update and clarity on what could have been the cause of their deaths. In a media statement, Dr Zweli Mkhize said:

“This morning we reported that two deaths occured as a result of COVID-19 virus. The first patient was a 48-year old female who tested positive for COVID-19 on the 23rd March 2020. She was suffering from pulmonary embolism. This means she had an underlying desease”. Dr Mkhize also mentioned the second death of a 28-year old woman who died of respiratory distress, he continued by his statement and said

“The second patient who died was a suspected case based on her clinical presentation. The clinicians who treated her have reported to us that this was a 28-year old female who had presented at the hospital in respiratory distress. At the time of presentation she was hypoxic. She was intubated and transferred to hospital the early hours of this morning, (i.e 27 March 2020 at 3 am). On arrival in ICU, she wasdeclared dead. The clinical picture was suggestive of COVID-19 and therefore a test was conducted.

Her laboratory results have since been received 17:20 and were confirmed negative. Her immediate family was also tested and they are also negative. She is therefore no longer considered a COVID-19 case.”

In closing this shows how the leaders are panicking on the Coronavirus and that this is to say they should stay calm so that the country stays calm.

Medical Staff At The Avenues Clinic Down Tools Protesting Lack Of Equipment For Coronavirus.

MEDICAL personnel at the privately run Avenues Clinic in Harare downed tools yesterday in protest over lack of personal protective equipment in the wake of the deadly coronavirus.

There are suspicions, however, that more cases are going unreported and some of the suspected cases are finding their way to private hospitals, where they will be handled by unprotected medical staff, increasing the risk of the spread of the deadly virus, an allegation government denies.

When NewsDay Weekender visited the clinic yesterday, there was strict screening at the entrance while the nurses congregated near the management offices as negotiations with worker representatives went on.

Tecla Barangwe of the Medical Workers Union said there were suspicions that suspected COVID-19 patients were being taken in and some were exhibiting signs and symptoms of the deadly disease and without the necessary equipment, workers could not continue risking their lives.

“We have taken note that suspected coronavirus patients could have been taken in secretly, but management is failing to provide adequate equipment to the workers,” she said.

“They have decided to put tools down until such a time management provides adequate personal protective equipment.”

Senior doctors and nurses in public hospitals across the country on Wednesday downed tools demanding protective clothing.

Several doctors internationally have died after contracting the virus while attending to patients.

Italy alone, the epicentre of the virus in Europe, has lost 37 doctors since the outbreak of the virus, which is now claiming over 600 lives daily in the European country.

Added Barangwe: “They say the equipment is in short supply, but there are patients in the wards with symptoms of COVID-19 and we gather some of the patients had travelled out or had contact with an infected person, but our members say they have realised that some could have been infected, so we are saying no protective, clothing no work.”

Interviewed workers said every case in these days of coronavirus was potentially dangerous and now difficult to handle without adequate protective clothing.

“Every case that we have these days is a potential case and it is difficult to attend to the cases without adequate protective clothing,” one of the striking workers said.

Asked whether they have had suspicious cases of late, another worker said: “We have had quite a number of cases that we suspected here and that is the reason why we have taken this step. It is dangerous for us to continue working like this.”

Meanwhile, Epworth Local Board chairman Batanai Masunda, who on Thursday reported a suspected case of coronavirus after a man with a history of travelling from Durban, South Africa, had exhibited flu-like symptoms, yesterday said the man had now been admitted at Beatrice Road Infectious Diseases Hospital in Harare and is awaiting results.

The said man had spent the whole day at a local clinic in Epworth, with medical personnel refusing to attend to him saying they did not have protective equipment. Newsday

It’s Not About The Water At Kariba, Chinese Turbines The Reason Behind Loadshedding. Zambian Engineers Tell It All.

The newly installed Chinese electricity turbines by Sino Hydro are overheating once they run for sometime hence the need to keep interchanging them leading to electricity loadsheding in Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Further, the machines are draining a lot of water than the Kariba Dam design capacity hence losing too much water, senior ZESCO engineers and some officials from Ministry of Energy have revealed, and Zambian Watchdog can challenge the PF government to refute.

Sources say while the water levels may not be where they are supposed to be, the situation has been worsened by high intake of water by the Chinese turbines plus they are overheating once they run for sometime.

“We had advised against installation of these machines but government insisted due to corruption. Now they are behaving like an overheating vehicle engine that cannot run for sometime without switching off for it to cool down.

We have to keep rotating them by switching maybe two out of six at any given time so that we can produce some electricity causing loadsheding many areas for hours. The country has had enough rains this year and by now, the situation should have normalised. But these machines are taking lots of water hence losing too much water from the dam. Ideally we should have been at the peak in production and we only expected loadsheding around October/November. Now we don’t even know what will happen by that time,” sources have revealed.

Mangudya Jumped The Gun On His US Dollar Announcement

Celebrations about the return of the United States dollar as legal tender in Zimbabwe may be premature.

Inside sources say Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor, John Mangudya, jumped the gun by announcing the return.

He also said that the managed float exchange rate had been abandoned and the Zimbabwe dollar was now fixed at 25:1 against the US dollar.

“There is no going back to the United States dollar,” a source said. “The revised position will be announced on Monday with the legal instruments.”

Critics say that policy flip-flops like this one do not augur well with potential investors.

Mangudya’s measures announced yesterday were a reversal of those announced by Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube on 11 March, which according to the British government were recommended by the International Monetary Fund whose nod opens doors for international investment.

Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti, who has been arguing against de-dollarisation, said that he has repeatedly told the government that this will not work.

“The regime has radically done a volte face& sneakily re-dollarised. We told them it wouldn’t work & won’t work. They owe Zimbabwe an apology and they should now bring a Bill to Parliament formally repealing those sections of the Finance Act that incorporated SI33 & 142of 2019,” he tweeted.

“Public policy must be consistent, predictable &for the public good .It surely can’t be the business of Government to disrupt people’s lives.

“If the business of a gvt becomes that of disrupting its citizens then that gvt should have no business in the citizen s business #Shame.

“The confusion around monetary policy &the mismanagement of FX in Zim reflects structural incompetence &indifference. Undoing this dog’s breakfast will be a nightmare.”

He added that the move by the government was an act of desperation by a regime that was on its knees.

“So the regime’s opaque attempt to re-dollarize marks the desperate act of a desperate regime that is literally on its knees,” he said.

“With the closure of Beitbridge, dwindling diaspora remittances, the collapse of the #SMP, fuel & energy crises, #COVID19, grain shortages, the regime is in crises.

“Re-dollarization will not mask or obviate the need for genuine structural reforms in Zimbabwe, nor the imperator to resolve the crises of legitimacy. It will not hide the genuine need for a lasting political settlement. Nor will it hide the regime’s gross incompetence and abuse of power.

“#COVID19 has exposed the regime for what it is, a bungling incompetent corrupt gang of thugs masquerading as a government.”

It is not clear what will happen to Mangudya if it turns out that he announced yesterday’s measures without the agreement of the Monetary Policy Committee.

Mangudya is less than a year into his second and final term which was renewed on 1 May last year.

Mthuli Ncube appointed a nine-member Monetary Policy Committee in September last year in a move that was widely seen as trying to rein in Mangudya.

According to the Herald the MPC’s functions entailed determining the monetary policy of Zimbabwe; including the setting of limits on open market operations by the bank and ensure price stability as defined by the Government’s inflation target in the national budget.

It would also determine interest rates in line with the Government’s economic policies and targets for growth and employment creation as well as other monetary policy functions, as the finance minister may prescribe by way of regulations.

The paper said that according to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Act, the committee submits its findings to the board of the central bank but this is for information purposes only.

Mangudya chairs the MPC and his two deputies are also members.

No National Hero Status For Veteran Bulawayo Politician

Clark Mpofu

PIONEER liberation fighter Clark Mpofu has been declared a liberation war hero and his family would be provided with a State assisted burial.

Mpofu succumbed to a heart attack on Saturday at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo.

He will be buried today at Nkulumane Provincial Heroes Acre.

The Zanu-PF leadership in Bulawayo had recommended that he be declared a national hero for his contributions in liberating the country.

In an interview yesterday, Zanu-PF Politburo member Retired Colonel Tshinga Dube said the party’s leadership declared Mpofu a liberation war hero.

“Therefore, he will get a State assisted burial. The decision was made yesterday during the party’s Politburo meeting. Cde (Absolom) Sikhosana delivered the message to his family. We had hoped he would be declared a national hero but we will accept what the party’s leadership has decided on,” said Rtd Col Dube.

Historian Pathisa Nyathi described Mpofu as one of the pioneering liberation struggle cadres who changed the nationalist struggle from accommodating the settler minority but directly and radically confronting it.

His actions led to his arrest in 1965 and he remained in jail until ceasefire in 1979.

He attended Zinyangeni Primary School in Nkayi and later came to Bulawayo where he joined the National Democratic Party and became active in its Youth League within the Makokoba Branch where the likes of Jaison Ziyaphapha Moyo, Benjamin Madlela and Ethan Dube and others were also active.

Mpofu excelled in the Sabotage Campaign where they operated under the command of General Chedu and Enos Chikowore.

After training in sabotage activities, he was part of the group that bombed the Bulawayo Post Office, Tredgold Building and Circus Grounds near the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre grounds.

Upon his arrest Mpofu was sent to Khami Prison where one of his fellow inmates was President Mnangagwa.

He was moved to other prisons such as Whawha and Gwelo prison.

Mpofu was released from jail following the conclusion of the Lancaster House Talks in 1979.

Mourners are gathered at house number 4592 Nketa 9.

WHO Warns Of ‘Dramatic Evolution’ Of Coronavirus In Africa

ENCA| The World Health Organization’s regional director for Africa warned the continent faced a “dramatic evolution” of the coronavirus pandemic.

Of the 47 countries in the WHO Africa region — which includes sub-Saharan Africa and Algeria — 39 nations are now affected, compared with only one a month ago, Matshidiso Rebecca Moeti told French television channel France24.

Moeti said there have been about 300 cases per day in recent days and called for “intensified action by African countries”.

“The situation is very worrying, with a dramatic evolution: an increase geographically in the number of countries and also an increase in the number of infections,” Moeti said.

Cases have risen across the world’s poorest continent over the past week to a total of nearly 3,500 cases and 94 deaths, according to an AFP tally that covers all of Africa.

African nations have ordered curfews and lockdowns in response to the growing pandemic, amid fears that weak health infrastructure will leave the continent terribly exposed to an outbreak on the scale of virus-stricken Europe.

Moeti acknowledged that measures were being taken to contain the spread of the virus and to isolate suspected cases.

Governments have banned religious gatherings and sporting events, while schools were closed in 25 countries, she said.

She noted that 42 countries are now able to diagnose the disease.

“A few weeks ago, only two countries had the diagnostic capacity,” she said.

But Moeti stressed that the continent was poorly equipped to deal with a major health crisis.

“It is true that in many African households people live in large families. It’s very difficult sometimes for everyone to have their own room,” she said.

“There is a very strong community life. We have to find other hygiene methods to minimise the spread of the virus.”

Govt Urged To Report Truthfully On Coronavirus

Roselyn Hanzi

Civil Society Organisations have challenged the government to disseminate correct information about the COVID-19 pandemic that reflects the situation on the ground.

She wrote:

“Can you provide further information on issues relating to the following, testing centres, indicators for testing, reaction time, inconclusive results as we have elaborated below?

There is a need to establish satellite testing centres throughout the country. Currently, testing is restricted to Harare and Bulawayo and this poses challenges for those who may need to be tested, but live outside or far away from these cities.

Ideally, testing facilities should be available across all 60 district hospitals. At the very least, due to resource constraints, testing kits should be available at all the 10 provincial hospitals.

Zimbabwe, like the rest of the world, is battling to contain the spread of COVID-19, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa declaring a 21-day total lockdown starting on Monday.

Meanwhile, health officials have revised the number of confirmed coronavirus cases from 5 to 7.

Zimbabwe Confirmed Coronavirus Figures Go Up Overnight

She encouraged covering one’s nose and mouth with tissue paper or flexed elbow when coughing and sneezing and avoiding close contact with people who are sick, coughing or sneezing.

Dr Mahomva said all non-essential travel was still strongly discouraged.

“If you suspect Covid-19 disease or wish to obtain more information on this disease, you are advised to call the Ministry of Health and Child Care on toll free hotline numbers for assistance: 2019,” she said.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases is now more than 410 000 globally with more than 18 000 deaths recorded. South Africa has the highest number of infections in Africa with more than 900 cases recorded by yesterday afternoon and two people having succumbed to the disease.

Police Officer Accused Of Spreading Coronavirus Lies On A Man Who Died In Makokoba

A FAMILY from Makokoba whose relative died at home, sparking a Covid-19 scare has accused a police officer who attended the scene of spreading the unfounded story that the death was due to coronavirus.

Residents in one of the city’s oldest suburbs have reportedly started stigmatising the family, even after health experts dispelled the rumour that Danisa Tshili, who was based in South Africa, died of Covid-19.

The family is facing challenges in buying basics as vendors who know them are afraid to accept their money.

Mourners are said to be keeping their distance as they fear Tshili’s family members may be infected.

Tshili died on Wednesday, hours after returning from the neighbouring country.

His family yesterday said he was attacked by thugs in South Africa and had returned to receive home care.

They said prior to being attacked, he had returned home about a week ago to get a new emergency passport to renew his work permit that had expired.

His sister, Ms Siphathisiwe Tshili, said when they had called police and Doves Funeral Parlour to remove his body from the house when an officer after checking his travelling history made ‘reckless and unfounded claims’ that since he was in South Africa, he could have died of coronavirus.

“This is what caused Doves Funeral Services to stop the process of retrieving his body. They removed it when they came for the third time upon arrival of city health officials. Before his death, he had visited a clinic in South Africa which had recommended that he be admitted so that they monitor his situation. But considering that he had no one to take care of him in the neighbouring country, he opted to come back home. His body was only removed after health officers from Bulawayo City Council visited the house and went through his medical papers,” said Ms Tshili.

She said it made no sense for the police officer to make unsubstantiated claims when he had documents detailing his medical history.

Ms Tshili said the falsehood has resulted in neighbours and other relatives avoiding the family as they seem to still believe members are infected.

“Neighbours are now sceptical. Some of them do not want to come close to us because of the fear this has caused. I wanted to buy tomatoes at the market, but because some people who knew me refused to take my money. After the matter was published in the paper, we also got a lot of calls from our relatives who stay far and wide trying to understand the truth of the matter. Some of them were even afraid to come to the funeral wake saying if it is coronavirus, it might wipe us all as a clan,” Ms Tshili said.

She said even those who might have assisted in making burial arrangements, may stay away from them.

Ms Tshili said if her brother had died of Covid-19, it was automatic that the family was going to be placed on isolation but because it is not, they are still going about burial preparations.

Area councillor Shadreck Sibanda, who was also at the family home called for professionalism in the police force.

“We can’t have a police officer who is supposed to be guided by professionalism being casual with information. Right now, a lot of people in Makokoba might not know what the real truth is just because of such reckless behaviour. I believe the Zimbabwe Republic Police should censure officers from spreading falsehood. I also want to encourage residents to avoid spreading information that they have not verified,” said Cllr Sibanda.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said his office was not aware of the development.

“As police, we were never informed of corona. The Makokoba incident was never linked to corona. We’re treating it as sudden death. Corona can only be declared by a competent medical team,” said Insp Ncube.

Bulawayo has not recorded a Covid-19 case despite the country recording seven cases, one of them fatal. Authorities have also expressed concern over fake news circulating over Covid-19.

“Covid 19 Has Spoilt Our Big Day, We’ve Been Planning The Wedding For Two Years.”

Nobert Moyo and his fiancée Mihlaemihle Sidambe

FOR two years, Nobert Moyo and his fiancée Mihlaemihle Sidambe were looking forward to celebrating their love through a wedding that was slated for April 18, coinciding with Independence Day.

They had been painstakingly planning, saving money and paying service providers in advance so that the day that means so much to them could be big day to remember the rest of their lives.

The date they had chosen was perfect as it is during the wedding season in Zimbabwe and on a holiday.

But, who would have known that a pandemic that started in Wuhan city in China in December last year would dash the nuptial plans of Nobert and Mihlaemihle in Bulawayo.

Social gatherings, including weddings in Zimbabwe were this week banned because of the highly infectious nature of Covid-19, a disease that has killed thousands worldwide. Showing how serious Government is about the pandemic that has killed more than 19 000 people globally, Chief Justice Luke Malaba on Monday directed the country’s civil courts to cancel all pre-booked weddings.

Nobert and Mihlaemihle are among many couples in Zimbabwe who have been forced to postpone or cancel their wedding.

When planning a wedding, many couples pay deposits for wedding venues, wedding dresses, the cake, food, DJ, MC and car hire, among other costs in advance. “We’ve been planning the wedding for two years since 2018. Like any other couple that plans a wedding, we had made part payments to service providers,” said Nobert.

The couple, just like many others who were planning to be joined in holy matrimony during this period, has been forced to postpone their wedding indefinitely.

Norbert says what pains them is that most of the services were charged in US Dollar which they had to source from the black market.

“The pain and suffering that we endured was that most service providers were charging in foreign currency and it was very difficult to source it. We had to buy from the black market where the exchange rate keeps changing.

“Trust me, having to plan everything on our own in the prevailing economic situation in the country was never easy,” said Nobert.

He said given the amount of money they had spent, they at one time contemplated going ahead with the wedding with a limited number of guests but later took the hard decision of postponing it.

“At first when the Government announced that there can only be a gathering of not more than 100 people, we were determined to go ahead with our wedding as planned. A few days later the number was reduced to 50. We realised it was not feasible to go ahead as this meant the wedding was going to be attended by just our parents, service providers and bridal team only,” said Nobert

He said having a 100 guests at a wedding was not easy because just relatives alone can be more than a 100.

“We then decided to move the wedding to August 1 in order for us not to incur any more losses in the planning process. Although we had our welcome boards and invitation cards printed out, we just had to deal with that loss and face the reality,” he said.

The new August date is based on the hope that the situation regarding Covid-19 will have improved by then resulting in the lifting of the ban on large gatherings.

“We’re hoping that by the time we get to August, this pandemic will be over to enable us to go ahead with our wedding. We thank our service providers for being so understanding and making an undertaking to provide the services in August,” said Nobert.

All service providers said they will not charge extra for the postponed wedding and the only challenge is that of the cake which is ready.

“The cake is ready and we’re now in communication with the guys who made it to see how best it can be preserved or if there’s need to make another one,” said Nobert.

Mnangagwa’s Lockdown Decree Does Not Have The Necessary Facts, Jonathan Moyo Says – Full Thread.

The taskforce was previously chaired by Health and Child Care Minister Dr Obadiah Moyo deputised by Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo.

The two remain members of the taskforce.

Trump Donates USD$470k to Zimbabwe to Fight COVID-19

THE United States yesterday pledged US$470 000 to combat COVID-19 in Zimbabwe and to complement World Health Organisation (WHO) efforts to prepare large-scale testing for coronavirus in the country.

United States Agency for International Development (USAid) mission director Stephanie Funk in a statement yesterday said the funds would be pivotal in the implementation of an emergency plan for points of entry, as well as in activating case finding and evidence-based surveillance for influenza-like illnesses.

They urged government to put in place co-ordinated efforts, together with the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and WHO to identify priority areas for investment.

“The US has pledged US$470 000 to fight the spread of COVID-19,” the statement from Funk read.

“This assistance will build on the ongoing investments by the US in Zimbabwe’s health sector.”

Funk said since 1980, the US government has provided over US$1 billion in health assistance to strengthen health systems, so that Zimbabweans can live longer, healthier lives.

She said between the USAid and the US Department of State, American taxpayers generously made available more than US$90 billion for health globally since 2009, and called upon other donors to contribute towards the fight against the coronavirus which has taken the lives of around 21 000 people worldwide, including that of broadcaster Zororo Makamba last Tuesday.

“For more than 30 years, the American people, through USAid have contributed over US$3,2 billion in assistance to Zimbabwe. Current projects include initiatives to increase food security, support economic resilience, improve health outcomes, and promote democratic governance,” she said.

As Zimbabwe receives donations from well-wishers like the US, non-governmental organisation, the Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development, has urged government to practise transparency and accountability.

Zimcodd said precautionary measures against “tenderpreneuship” must be taken in order to safeguard against individuals that might want to take advantage of funds meant to fight the pandemic.

Economic Expert Hails RBZ Move to Re-Dollarize

By Jane Mlambo| Economic expert Vince Musewe has hailed the move by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe to re-dollarize saying it works to control inflation while reducing parallel market activities that were piling pressure on authorities.

Posting on Twitter this morning Musewe said Mangudya had fought a lone battle on currency issues and his recent move to allow use of USD as cash or electronic payments was the correct thing to do.

“Kudos to John Mangundya who I suspect has fought a lone battle on currency issues. Allowing use of USD as cash or electronic payments for local purchases is the correct thing to do. Means one does not have to convert USD to ZWL which was inflationary and fuels parallel market,” said Musewe.

He urged the Finance minister Professor Mthuli Ncube to institute a production taskforce rather than a currency taskforce saying the country needs to increase production capacity of the economy.

“Mthuli Ncube we do not need a currency task force. We need a production task force to increase productive capacity of the economy. Duplication of resources and RBZ functions is wasteful and we are recycling same characters on these boards and task forces,” added Musewe.

Nick Mangwana, Jonathan Moyo In Early Morning Twitter Fight

Self exiled former cabinet minister Professor Jonathan Moyo and Information Permanent Secretary Nick Mangwana have engaged in a war of words early morning today over President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s lockdown announcement last evening.

Mangwana tweeted a quotation from Mnangagwa’s speech where he spoke of the need for a legal instrument to punish those who “cause unnecessary alarm and despondency through social and other media” to which the former Tsholotsho legislator responded saying it was not going to work.

Mangwana: “Legal instruments are being put in place to deal with and punish those who cause unnecessary alarm and despondency through social and other media, during this emergency. We need to act responsibly” President ED Mnangagwa.

Moyo: And you call this gestapo tactic in the digital age, a new dispensation? It won’t work. You will not work. Simple!

Mangwana: These legal instruments are being used everywhere from SA to the USA. We haven’t heard you say a word. Does it become Gestapo when it comes to Zimbabwe? Just tweet responsibly Jona.

Nurses and Doctors Demand ZWL$10 000 COVID-19 Risk Allowance

Frontline health workers are appealing for a $10 000 risk allowance per month, as they battle Covid-19, which has affected five people in Zimbabwe so far. The proposal is for the allowance to be given only to those at work.

In addition, the workers have proposed that only healthcare workers who can be provided with protective personal equipment (PPE) report for work at their stations.

The proposals follow a commitment by Government earlier this week that a risk allowance for the sector had been approved, while the distribution of PPE, some of which was donated by Chinese businessman Jack Ma, has began.

Government also committed to avail a substantial amount of money for a vehicle loan scheme for the health workers. Nurses and doctors had withdrawn their labour on Wednesday, demanding a risk allowance and PPEs.

The request by frontline health workers to have a risk allowance, coincides with an announcement by EcoSure yesterday that it plans to support the country’s national health delivery system by equipping frontline medical staff with PPE, provide them with life and health insurance and safe transport to and from work daily, for the next 12 months.

The Health Apex Council confirmed the need for a risk allowance after a Health Services Bipartite Negotiating Platform held in Harare on Thursday, where they insisted they were not on strike.

“We are not on industrial action. However, we do not encourage the health workers to attend work without PPE,” said the health workers in a statement. “Therefore, we propose that only health workers who can be provided PPE by the MoHCC (Ministry of Health and Child Care) should report for work at their stations since the hospitals are high risk areas on rotational basis. The health workers proposed a flat $10 000 per month as risk allowance for those at work.”

According to the statement, Government representatives were taking up the proposal to their principals.

Cassava Smartech, the parent company of the EcoSure insurance business’s CEO Mr Eddie Chibi yesterday said given the situation Zimbabwe finds itself in, they wanted to ensure all frontline medical staff were fully protected.

He said EcoSure was putting in place measures that gave the health workers confidence as they carried out their duty of primary patient care and as they saved lives.

SA Confirmed COVID-19 Positive Cases Now 1170

South Africa now has 1170 confirmed cases of the Covid-19 virus, Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu confirmed on Friday.

He was speaking on behalf of Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, who was not present at the press conference due to other engagements.

“While there has been two deaths what has now been confirmed by the authorities, one death is confirmed, the other death is suspected,” said Mthembu on behalf of Mkhize.

Earlier Western Cape Premier Alan Winde confirmed that the two people who died from Covid-19 related illnesses were a 28-year-old and a 48-year-old woman.

“The 48-year-old woman’s condition worsened while in ICU and she passed away this morning. The 28-year-old was admitted to hospital yesterday and received emergency healthcare. She also passed away this morning. The clinical picture is consistent with Covid-19, but we are awaiting the results of the test to confirm this,” he said to eNCA on Friday morning.

These two deaths took place as the country has been placed on a national lockdown with South Africans expected to stay at home. Only essential businesses remain open.

On Thursday night, President Cyril Ramaphosa deployed SANDF members to assist SAPS officials in enforcing the lockdown regulations.

Ramaphosa said the SANDF should ensure that once the 21 days were over, South Africa will be able to bounce back. He said this was a mercy and life-giving mission.

“You are the restorers of life to our people. Make sure that after 21 days, this state will be able to bounce back. Where our people can be active once again. This is a life restoration and mercy mission. A life-giving mission. Go out and save the lives of South Africans. I order you to go out and execute this mission with great success,” he said.

On Thursday, South Africa had 927 confirmed cases of the virus. This means more than 243 new cases have been registered on Friday

55 Arrested On The First Day of South Africa Lockdown

Fifty-five people were arrested for contravening regulations on the first day of the national lockdown.

The 21-day lockdown came into effect at midnight, restricting movement to fight the spread of Covid-19.

Police Minister Bheki Cele said the police’s phones were “abuzz” with complaints of people breaking the law.

He was speaking at an inter-ministerial address on Friday.

Working with these “good citizens”, Cele said 55 people were arrested on Friday.

Five people were arrested in the Free State; 20 in Gauteng – six in Alexandra; seven were arrested in KwaZulu-Natal; 10 in Limpopo; and two in the Western Cape.

Lockdown

“These are people who don’t have a good will, people who are doing exactly what they were told not to do,” Cele said.

He added some were arrested for throwing parties and others for public drinking during the lockdown.

On the roads, Cele said there were 172 roadblocks across the country manned by just under 24 000 officers.

The main roadblocks, he said, were on the North West and Gauteng borders, the N1 going to Limpopo and M3 going to KwaZulu-Natal.

“We must remember that what is happening here is not a war against any citizen of the Republic of South Africa, it’s against this enemy called coronavirus.

“But whoever is breaking the law, whoever is not working with South Africans is joining the enemy against the people of SA and we are there to make sure we defend the people,” Cele added.

Zim COVID-19 Confirmed Cases Now 7

ZImbabwe government has announced two more cases of coronavirus to bring the total to seven from five.

Two of the seven confirmed cases had contact with a 52 year old Male who travelled from Dubai while one had contact with the late Zororo Makamba.

Last night President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced a total lockdown of the country for 21 days in a bid to contain the outbreak of the virus amid increasing number of suspected cases.

Early this week coronavirus claimed the life of Zororo Makamba who became the first and only person to die from coronavirus in the country with his family accusing government of negligence.

By Jane Mlambo| The Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers (CZR) says it will revoke operating license to any retailer which effect a price hike on basic commodities including sugar, cooking oil, salt, bottled water, sanitary pads, washing soap and powder among other basic necessities.

In a statement yesterday CZR President Denford Mutashu said as retailers they were in full support of the government move to lockdown the country to contain the deadly virus.

As part of safety measures, CZR said shops that will open during the lockdown period should have their employees temperature checked everyday to ensure the safety of customers.

Jonathan Moyo Unmoved By Govt Decision to Lockdown

By Jonathan Moyo| Self exiled former Higher education minister Professor Jonathan Moyo has slammed President Emmerson Mnangagwa for imposing a lockdown decision without consulting stakeholders saying he failed to correctly copy from his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa.

Posting on Twitter soon after the lockdown announcement, Moyo said Ramaphosa had given South Africa three week days, Mnangagwa had given Zimbabwe a weekend insinuating that nothing much happens during weekends as some companies will be closed.

“While @CyrilRamaphosa gave SA three-weekdays notice after consultations, @edmnangagwa has given Zim the weekend, without consultations & without outlining the objectives of his copy & paste measures which are not about flattening the #coronavirus curve,” said Moyo.

However some Twitter users hit back at Moyo accusing the former Tsholotsho legislator of turning around after pushing government to lockdown only to start opposing a move he vehemently stood for.

“Congratulations prof. Mission accomplished you suckered The president into taking a rushed ill informed decision now you will have your revolt as planned,” said one Twitter user.

Herald Celebrates As Mnangagwa- Chamisa Find Each Other For The First Time Since 2018 Elections

The state owned Herald has published a story on MDC leader Nelson Chamisa ‘praising’ President Emmerson Mnangagwa for the decision he made to lockdown the country in the face of the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

Below is the full Herald story..

MDC-ALLIANCE leader Mr Nelson Chamisa yesterday praised the decision by President Mnangagwa to lockdown the country for 21 days from Monday as a measure to contain Covid-19.

President Mnangagwa, in an address to the nation last night, said only essential service providers such as pharmacies and food retailers will be open, together with municipalities to collect refuse and provide water.

In a statement of appreciation of Government’s initiatives, Mr Chamisa said the lockdown was a wise move.

“The decision to lockdown Zimbabwe is necessary, wise and supported,” he posted on his Twitter handle.

“We are in circumstances of a catastrophe. There is only one Zimbabwe. We are one people.

“Politics aside, we must unite to save lives. Measures to test, detect the virus and cushion the vulnerable essential! #ZimLOC.”

The party’s top officials, including secretary-general Mr Charlton Hwende, urged the nation to comply with the President’s announcement.

“We must all comply with the decision to stay at home from Monday for 21 days,” he tweeted.

“We are facing a very serious pandemic that needs all Zimbabweans to unite and join hands in order to curtail the spread of this virus.

“Team Zimbabwe will win together this war against Covid-19.”

Mr Chamisa’s views come after he had earlier given an impression that his party did not support the measures announced by President Mnangagwa to contain Covid-19.

The MDC-Alliance leader’s appreciative comments come barely a month after other top members of his party realised the folly of defying national programmes and joined in the national clean-up campaigns held every first Friday of each month.

The party’s senior officials including, Mr Hwende, took part in the clean-up at Overspill Shopping Centre in Epworth last month, after months of opposing the campaign.

MDC-T president Dr Thokozani Khupe also welcomed the total lockdown, adding that the rising deaths across the world demonstrate that nations were fighting an “invisible enemy”.

She said the enemy requires a huge army in order to be defeated.

“Therefore, every Zimbabwean is a soldier from now going forward and we need strong ammunition.

“Our biggest ammunition right now is heeding to the call by the President of the Republic which is to stay at home for 21 days starting on Monday,” she said.

Dr Khupe emphasised the need for social distancing, practicing good hygiene and washing hands with soap all the time.

Mliswa Writes a Letter to Chinese Tiles Manufacturer To Cease Operations

Norton member of parliament Temba Mliswa has written to a Chinese owned Sunny Yi Feng which manufactures tiles to stop operations due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Sunny Yi Feng operates in Norton where Mliswa is a legislator.

“In an attempt to protect the residents of Norton, I’ve issued Sunny Yi Feng Tiles a letter to cease operations. We have to do all we can to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The congestion at the site & influx of Chinese without proper screening was just too potentially harmful,” said Mliswa on Twitter.

Zim To Go On 21 Days Lockdown

President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday announced a 21 day lockdown as part of government measures to contain the deadly coronavirus that has so far claimed one life in the country.

Addressing the nation last night, Mnangagwa said during the lockdown period only health and industry workers will be allowed to move while all public transport will be suspended.

“While our numbers are both low and for now all imported, this need not induce complacency in us. COVID-19 is now upon us and if experience elsewhere is anything to go by can spread in leaps and bounds in so short a time.

“We are worried that even as our numbers remain low, there is a possibility of wider community spread and transmissions,” said Mnangagwa.

He further noted that the coming of winter in two months time will pose a serious threat as it creates conditions for more infections hence the move to take a decisive stand now.

Chamisa Says Lockdown Move Was Necessary

Farai Dziva|Movement for Democratic Change president Advocate Nelson Chamisa has described the decision by government to “lockdown” Zimbabwe as necessary and wise.

Chamisa also urged Zimbabweans to shelve political differences as the deadly Coronavirus continues to wreak havoc.

“The decision to lockdown Zimbabwe is necessary, wise and supported.

We are in circumstances of a catastrophe. There is only one Zimbabwe. We are one people.

Politics aside, we must unite to save lives. Measures to test, detect the virus and cushion the vulnerable essential!#ZimLOC,” tweeted Chamisa.

According to the Ministry of Health and Childcare, five people have tested positive for Coronavirus in the country but unconfirmed reports claim government is unwilling to disclose the actual number of infected people.

ZRP Cop Spreads Rumour Of ‘Coronavirus Death’

-Chronicle/state media

Mnangagwa Frees 5,000 Prisoners

Emmerson Mnangagwa has pardoned 5 000 prisoners serving for non-violent crimes as part of measures to decongest the country’s prisons whose population had ballooned to over 20 000.

Among those who will be released through the Presidential amnesty are those who were jailed for life but have since served at least 25 years.

The country’s prison population currently stands at 22 000 against an official holding capacity of 17 000. Mnangagwa yesterday announced the amnesty in a Government Gazette (General Notice 673 of 2020) under Clemency Order 1 of 2020.

The amnesty comes barely a week after the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) had appealed to Government to pardon some inmates to decongest facilities and reduce the spread of Covid-19 in case of an outbreak.

In an interview yesterday, secretary for Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Mrs Virginia Mabiza said the President exercised his constitutional powers to release some prisoners in terms of section 112(1)(a) and (d) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

“We are expecting about 5 000 prisoners to be released any time from now following a Presidential Clemency Order. Prisons is now working on the necessary paperwork among other modalities to ensure the release of the prisoners on amnesty,” she said.

Mrs Mabiza said the amnesty was a routine exercise carried out by Government to decongest and alleviate challenges faced by the ZPCS.

She said although it is not linked to coronavirus, it came at the right time when there is need to implement the principle of social distancing, which is aimed at combating the spread of the global pandemic.

“The release of prisoners is not related to Covid-19. It is actually one of Government efforts towards decongesting our prisons, but it just came at a time when the world is battling to contain Covid-19,” she said.

Mrs Mabiza said communicable diseases like Covid-19 can spread easily in confined places and de-congesting prisons is therefore critical.

“In fact, it is good now that we have such a programme when we are also trying to implement social distancing, which can also be extended to prisons as much as we can stretch while at the same time trying to balance the interests of justice,” she said.

According to the clemency order, Mnangagwa also commuted to life imprisonment sentences of inmates who were on death row for at least 10 years or more.

However, murder, treason, rape, armed robbery, car-jacking, sexual offences or violence driven offences do not qualify for Presidential pardon.

Other prisoners also excluded from the amnesty include habitual criminals previously released on amnesty and those serving a sentence imposed by a court martial or have a record of escaping from lawful custody. The amnesty has emptied the country’s juvenile and female prisoners, regardless of the offence committed, save for those convicted of murder, treason any sexual offence, carjacking, robbery, stock theft, public violence, any conspiracy, incitement or attempt to commit any of those offences.

“Full remission of the remaining period of imprisonment is hereby granted to all female prisoners, save for those convicted of specified offences. The inmate should have served at least half of her sentence,” read the order.

“Full remission of the remaining period of imprisonment is hereby granted to all juvenile prisoners under the age of eighteen (18), save for those convicted of specified offences. The prisoners should have served at least one third of his or her sentence.”

All prisoners serving a term of imprisonment at the Open Prison regardless of offences committed and those aged 70 years and above have also been pardoned, including those who have been bed ridden for a prolonged period without recovery upon certification by a correctional medical officer or a Government medical officer.

Mnangagwa has also freed all prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment and had served 25 years.

Prisoners serving an effective period of imprisonment of more than 36 months who have served a third of their remaining sentence were also granted an additional one-quarter remission of the remaining effective period of imprisonment.

The President, under the Constitution, has powers to substitute lesser sentences than those imposed by the courts. It is this power that has been used in the past, using a formula to ensure equal treatment.

The prisoners still have criminal records, which will count against them if they repeat the offence, and their convictions stand.

In 2018, Mnangagwa cut the sentences of 3 000 prisoners across the country in a bid to de-congest prisons and improve the living conditions of those who remain.

Man Bashes Wife Over S*x Ban

A married man from Luveve has reportedly turned to abusing his wife in the presence of their children after she slapped him with a sex ban.

Austine Soko who has been denied sex by his wife couldn’t take away his frustrations anywhere else except to send the energy back to his wife Skhunjuliwe Soko.

“He insults me using vulgar language in front of our children, he physically, sexually, emotionally and economically abuses me as he doesn’t want me to be employed,” said Skhunjuliwe.

She said the abuse she was receiving from her husband was affecting their two children who are aged 17 and 13 years old.

“The constant fights are emotionally affecting the children. At times he (Austine) verbally abuses them for no apparent reason,” said Skhunjuliwe.

It seemed the marriage between the two was getting strained as Skhunjuliwe was tired of not being free to work and receiving different forms of abuse from her husband. On the other hand, Austine was also tired of the continuous strain of the sex ban.

He bared his heavy heart before Western Commonage magistrate Urgent Vundla as he asked for advice on what he could do when his wife refused to grant him his conjugal rights.

“What should I do? Whenever I touch her in our bed she always pushes away my hand and tells me straight to my face that she doesn’t want to have sex with me,” said Soko.

Skhunjuliwe pleaded with Vundla to grant her a protection order as she feared that her husband might end up hurting her.

She was granted an interim protection order and Austine was cautioned to refrain from emotionally, verbally, physically, sexually and economically abusing his wife.

“Anywhere you go, sex is the foundation of any marriage. I would advise you to work on that part of your marriage,” said the magistrate.-B-Metro

Parirenyatwa Hospital Sets Record Straight On Coronavirus Suspect

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals would not ordinarily reveal information on any patient.

We have however noted that one of our patients, Robert Gomana who demised on 25 March 2020 has become of public interest in view of the COVID19 pandemic.

We wish to dispel information which insinuates that Robert Gomana came in as COVID-19 suspect and was admitted in B7 ICU despite him showing symptoms similar to those of COVID-19.

To set the record straight, below are the facts of the matter:

  1. Robert Gomana presented at our Accident and Emergency Department on 23 March 2020 with a stabbed wound/ abdominal trauma.
  2. He had a temperature of 36.8 which was normal.
  3. He did not present with any symptoms of COVID-19.
  4. On examination, the doctors discovered that he had a distended abdomen which was very painful upon touching due to the blunt abdominal trauma.
  5. He was immediately prepared for emergency surgery.
  6. He was then admitted in B7 ICU following the surgery where he eventually demised on 25 March 2020.
  7. Inquiries done by the hospital to establish if Robert Gomana had contact with Zororo prior to his admission in the hospital have not provided any evidence of contact.
  8. According to his next of kin, his brother who stayed with him in Dzivarasekwa, Robert Gomana did not know anyone by the name Zororo Makamba and he was not a fitness trainer.

We, however remain unsure whether there is another Robert Gomana who shares the same name with the one we admitted as a patient in our hospital.

We, therefore, wish to inform members of the public that Robert Gomana who was managed in B7 ICU was not a COVID-19 suspect.
