ED’s New York Times Article Was Pure “Hot Air And Goat Hair”

By Nomusa Garikai| I was both disappointed and ashamed to see President Mnangagwa make a complete fool of himself in his widely publicised, but wrongly named, article “Towards a new Zimbabwe.”

“In November, the Zimbabwean people, led by our youth, went to the streets peacefully and joyfully, determined to have their voices heard. They called for freedom, progress and a new way of doing things. Though supported by the military, this was a popular, peaceful revolution. Watching the events unfold from exile, I was deeply proud of my fellow Zimbabweans,” he started off.

The world woke up in the small hours of November 14th to the announcement that the Zimbabwe Defence Forces had seized strategic state institutions and the then President Mugabe was under house arrest. It was not until Saturday 18th that ordinary people poured into the street, in answer to the call from the war veterans, to pressure Mugabe to resign. To therefore suggest that events of the 18th led the events of four days earlier is a shameless attempt to distort historic facts.

Although there was no physical violence used to coerce Mugabe to resign, others around him were rough-up; Professor Jonathan Moyo and Saviour Kasukuwere were lucky to escape with their lives and a few security personnel lost their lives. What happened in November 2017 was a coup and there is nothing “peaceful” about a coup!

“Zimbabwe is changing — politically, economically and societally — and we ask those who have punished us in the past to reconsider their sanctions against us. Zimbabwe is a land of potential, but it will be difficult to realize it with the weight of sanctions hanging from our necks,” he continued.

Another blatant lie!

For decades the Zanu PF propaganda mill has blamed Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown and the heart-breaking misery it has brought on the millions of ordinary Zimbabweans on sanctions. President Mnangagwa cannot talk of the post November coup as a new era and yet continue to peddle same lies of the Mugabe days.

Zimbabwe’s ruling elite are some of the richest individuals on earth, they have business assets worth millions of dollars, farms, mansions and enjoy extravagant and wasteful lifestyles. It is not sanctions that have made the filthy rich, rich; it is corruption. One does not need a university degree to see how the criminal waste of resources by the filthy rich has sucked the life out of the national economy resulting in the economic collapse and mass poverty.

It is the decades of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption, not sanctions, which are the root causes of Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown and abject poverty.

The reason why the people of Zimbabwe have mismanagement and corruption and have been allowed to grow and spread for the last decades is that the nation was stuck with a corrupt and incompetent Zanu PF government. The regime rigged elections making it impossible for the people to remove it from office.

For the last 20 years, at least, the people of Zimbabwe have been fighting for democratic change, reforms that will stop Zanu PF rigging elections and allow them to have a meaningful say in the governance of the country. The nearest the nation ever came to having their wish was during the GNU, if only the country’s opposition politicians had not sold-out and failed to get even one reform implemented in five years.

“I commit that in the new Zimbabwe, all citizens will have the right of free speech, free expression and free association. At the heart of this will be free and fair elections, to be held as scheduled in 2018, with all impartial observers who wish to witness the new Zimbabwean democracy at work welcome to attend. I extend that invitation once again,” President Mnangagwa promised in his article.

“Zimbabwe is changing, and quickly. So, in this light I urge the international community to heed the saying, “when the facts change,” change your minds.”

But that is just it, the facts on the ground have not change one bit and yet he expects everyone to see what is not there. President Mnangagwa has been promising free and fair elections and yet has stubbornly refused to implement the democratic reforms designed to take away Zanu PF’s carte blanche powers to rig elections.

Indeed, President Mnangagwa has retained the dictatorial power such as bribing the Chiefs with new trucks so they can continue to frog march villagers to vote for Zanu PF. Mnangagwa even has the chutzpah to denounce those calling for reforms as barking dogs!

Everyone with eyes, ears and a working brain can see that Zimbabwe is heading for yet another rigged election. It is disappointing that the people of Zimbabwe are once again being denied this basic human right.

The New York Times flattered President Mnangagwa by publishing his article, “warts and all” as Oliver Cromwell would have said. Sadly, for Mnangagwa the article all hot air and devoid of substance.

How is it possible in this time and age, 2 500 years after the Greeks gave the world democracy, we still have someone who has no clue what constituted free and fair elections, he is foolish enough to masquerade his stupidity on the world stage and, worst of all, he is, by military coup and rigged election, Zimbabwe’s President!

Of course, I am embarrassed for Mnangagwa, he has no sense of shame to have penned of such trash, and angry that the country should be so cursed to have such an empty head for president! “Towards a new Zimbabwe!” Mnangagwa claims and yet continues to hold the country to ransom, stuck with the same corrupt, vote rigging and tyrannical Zanu PF dictatorship or be it under new dictator, new management.- zsdemocrats.blogspot.co.uk

Shock As School Head Sodomises Pupil

NATIONAL NEWS

The headmaster of Seventh Day Adventist-run Anderson High School in Gweru is facing arrest after he allegedly sodomised a pupil before expelling him in an attempt to conceal the crime.

Caston Matsvanyanga is being accused of sodomising a Form 3 pupil (name withheld) at the school several times and allegedly expelled the boy after he threatened to expose his shenanigans. He is now facing arrest after the pupil reported the matter to the police.

A docket (reference number C10-03-18) has since been opened at Gweru Rural Police Station and indications are that Mutsvanyanga will appear in court tomorrow after police summoned him for a warned and cautioned statement.

It is alleged that sometime last year, Matsvanyanga called the pupil to his office after school and allegedly sodomised him before asking him not to tell anyone.

A police source said on a separate occasion, Matsvanyanga, who is not married, allegedly called the boy to his house after work and sodomised him again before buying his silence with goodies.

Matsvanyanga, the source added, used the same method to sodomise the boy on several other occasions.

The matter came to light when the boy told his friends that the headmaster was in the habit of sodomising him at his house and office after school.

The source said Matsvanyanga immediately expelled the boy from school after getting wind that fellow teachers were in the process of taking remedial action against him.

“The matter was reported to police last week in Chiredzi and was referred to Gweru Rural Police Station,” said a police source. “The suspect is likely to appear in court on Tuesday (today). Police have since opened the docket C10-03-18.

Acting Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Ethel Mukwende could neither confirm nor deny the matter. “I am not aware of the matter,” she said.

Midlands provincial education director Mrs Agnes Gudo confirmed that the matter was reported to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education sometime last year. “I am not aware that the headmaster is now facing arrest, but I can confirm that we received a report concerning the issue and we are investigating it,” she said. By A Correspondent| First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa’s name suddenly went all black last night when a campaign of Grace Mugabe magnitudes was launched for her.

The State Media opened a campaign for her birthday in what will see state companies pour thousands of dollars for her.

The development was last night ridiculed by commentators and observers.

The government owned Zimpapers is running the campaign which will only end on the 24th March. Below was the announcement:

Shock As Teacher Rapes, Impregnates Pupil

NATIONAL NEWS

A BINGA teacher has been arrested for allegedly raping and impregnating a pupil, two weeks after another teacher was accused of the same crime.
A police source said Johannes Muchimba of Masibinta Secondary School was arrested on Sunday morning after the Form Four pupil (17) and her mother reported the matter to the police on Saturday.

The source said Muchimba allegedly tripped the girl and raped her once without protection.
He threatened her with death if she revealed the matter to anyone. “The pupil and her mother revealed that she was allegedly raped on January 29 and confirmed to being pregnant.

“The pupil said she was allegedly raped while she was fetching water at a borehole about 300 metres away from Manjolo Business Centre,” said the source.

“She was in the company of her 10 year old younger sister when the incident occurred. Muchimba chatted with the pupil as he walked her from the borehole before he then dragged her into a nearby bush.”

Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Siphiwe Makonese confirmed the case.
“We received a case of rape and impregnating a minor. The teacher was arrested and investigations are underway,” she said.

A source who preferred anonymity said when the matter came to light last week; Muchimba allegedly tried to negotiate with the pupil’s family.

“Muchimba approached the girl’s family and had lured them into an undisclosed agreement. The matter was taken to village heads and headmen who referred the matter to police after the girl revealed the rape,” said the source.

Two weeks ago, another teacher in Binga who allegedly impregnated a pupil was suspended. Chronicle

Learn From Zuma, Mugabe Told

Former President Mr Robert Mugabe should dump his politics of entitlement and egotism and emulate other former statesmen who believe in continuity, political analysts said yesterday.

The analysts said Mr Mugabe should take a leaf from former South African President Jacob Zuma who over the weekend volunteered to campaign for the ANC ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Mr Zuma resigned last month in the face of a no-confidence vote supported by his own party.

He announced over the weekend that despite being in retirement, he will campaign for ANC in his home province, KwaZulu-Natal, adding that he was ready to be redeployed by the party.

This is contrary to Mr Mugabe whose “selfishness” has seen him anointing Brigadier-General Ambrose Mutinhiri (Retired) to lead the National Patriotic Front (NPF), a new political outfit composed of members of the G40 cabal.

The cabal was expelled from Zanu-PF last December while Mr Mugabe resigned after being recalled by his party, Zanu-PF.

NPF has indicated that it will contest the harmonised elections this year.

Political analyst Mr Alexander Rusero yesterday said unlike Mr Zuma, Mr Mugabe was self-centred.

We are dealing with two protagonists here with one being a former statesman who is grateful of his contribution as a person and civil servant occupying the highest office in South Africa,” he said.

“Then we are also dealing with another protagonist who has a dangerous feeling of entitlement who thought that Zimbabwe belongs to him and him only, someone who could not imagine there will come a certain time he could no longer be on the reign. Zuma’s statement represents politics of continuity while what Mugabe is doing is a dangerous gimmick and dangerous politics of entitlement of saying things cannot continue as long as I am not involved.”

Mr Rusero added: “It is unfortunate that for the first time he is blundering, reading a wrong political script because at the end of the day he is busy fighting something he created and the history and legacy he is part of. These are double standards. He is reading politics from a script of frustration and desperation not sober sense which requires rationality and decency.”

Another political analyst Mr Goodwine Mureriwa said Mr Mugabe’s sentiments should not hold Zimbabwe at ransom.

“Zuma has been ousted and he understands the circumstances that resulted in his ouster while here we have an adamant and selfish former president who believes Zanu-PF and Zimbabwe revolves around himself and his clan,” he said.

“What Zuma has done is a wakeup call to Mugabe that if he has always been standing for the wishes of the people and the people have spoken that they want a new leadership, he should support the will of the people and lead by example.”

Tanzania-based political analyst Mr Tafadzwa Mugwadi weighed in: “Zuma has demonstrated the astounding consciousness and virtues of a principled leader who is not self-centric. This strikes a difference with Mugabe who thinks at 94, he can destabilise Zanu-PF and scuttle the victory of President Mnangagwa. Unfortunately, he was a hero turned villain and no progress-minded Zimbabwean cares to listen to sour grapes from a disgraced nonagenarian. What boggles the mind however is that Zimbabweans endured 37 years of his rule but he is already too tired of being ruled in three months.

He needs to take a leaf from Zuma because Zanu-PF gave Mugabe everything during his time and hobnobbing with NPF and fallen G4O cabal is certainly not what he owes to the revolutionary party.”

In recalling Mr Mugabe, Zanu-PF resolved that the former leader was losing control of the party to his wife Mrs Grace Mugabe and the G40 cabal.

The cabal had also become instrumental in making executive decisions.- state media

ZEC ELECTION SHOCK: $60 Million Needed For Polls As 107 Parties Register

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) needs $60 million to prepare for and hold the 2018 harmonised elections due in a few months time.

The commission is looking through the voters roll to ensure there are no double entries and in preparation for the inspection of the voters roll by end of April.

Speaking to the ZBC News in Harare, ZEC Chairperson, Justice Priscillah Chigumba said the money is required voter education, the printing of ballot papers and other logistics.

“We have a deficit of $60 million and we are grateful to the government for giving us $900 000. We are also grateful to our funding partners, the UNDP provided forex and we are working on training manuals where we still need support to ensure we are ready for inspection of the voters roll,” Justice Chigumba said.

The commission faces a mammoth task of printing a ballot paper with names of 97 political parties. She added that the printing of ballots should not be a challenge as strict protocols are followed in selecting the company so that the process is not compromised.

She however declined to disclose if the printing company is local or not saying it is a security issue.

She also spoke about allegations of militarisation of the electoral body, saying they are unsubstantiated accusations as only a small percentage of the employees are former military personnel.

“Those complaints of militarisation of ZEC are unfounded. Former military personnel constitute less than 15 percent of the number of ZEC employees. There is no law against their getting employment in the electoral body,” she said.

Justice Chigumba also clarified the challenge of polarisation of the media which makes ZEC operations difficult if they are not dealt with as some political parties accuse the independent media of being pro-opposition while the state media is pro-establishment.

“The polarisation of the media is another challenge. Now there is a media monitoring committee is in place to ensure media houses comply with the law that they should be non-partisan,” she said.
Meanwhile, Justice Chigumba said the visiting SADC preliminary observer group is happy that some of its recommendations were incorporated into law or rectified administratively.

Jonso On Mnangagwa’s Deals

FULL TEXT: Gonese Speaks On The Electoral Amendment Bill

The Electoral Amendment Bill is currently before Parliament and last Tuesday I contributed to the Debate and I wait with bated breath to see how the Honourable Minister will respond to the issues that I and my colleagues will raise
” HON. GONESE: Thank you very much Mr. Speaker Sir, in respect of this Bill I would like to begin by saying that this is a very, very fundamental issue because when it comes to the issue of free and fair elections that really governs the governance architecture of our country. I want to say that it is very essential that we take this matter very seriously. My concern is that in the past we have talked about it and we have said that we really need a comprehensive amendment to the Electoral Law so that it conforms to the provisions of our Constitution.

If you look at our Constitution, it is a very, very good document and when we look at the section on elections, it gives us a very good framework. However, what is lacking is that this is not buttressed and supported by the legislation which is in place. Since 2013, Mr. Speaker, we have had piecemeal amendments to the Electoral Law instead of having a holistic approach where we actually cover everything which is required to be covered in terms of alignment, and also in terms of good practice.

I do sympathise with the current Minister. He was not in charge at the time when these piece meal amendments were being brought to this august House and I want to believe that at this point in time, we have got a new man in charge. We want to see a different approach from him.

In the course of my debate, I am going to highlight a lot of areas which have been left out and I hope that the Hon. Minister is going to take these into consideration. In this country, Mr. Speaker, we have had a history of disputed elections and one of the reasons is because of the defective legislative framework and this is something which we must now attend to cure so that, going forward, we are now dealing with a situation where the constitutional provisions, the legislative framework, the environment and everything else to do with free and fair elections is adequately covered.

I am very disappointed, Mr. Speaker that we have got so many areas which are not adequately covered. We have got a Bill which, with due respect, I would say is very shallow in its context. We have got very few provisions which deal mainly with the introduction of the Biometric Voter Registration and little else in circumstances where this Executive is aware of sentiments which had been raised by Hon. Members in the past of areas which need to be covered, but which still remain uncovered.

I am aware, Mr. Speaker, that our new President has been talking and talking about having free, fair, peaceful and credible elections. However, Mr. Speaker, this must not be a slogan. We should not just continue repeating it when in fact, we are not doing anything on the ground to actually demonstrate that we are committed to having a change of the mind set so that, going forward, our elections are those elections where people have got confidence in them and at the same time they are an accurate reflection of the will of the people of this country. You are an actual reflection of what the people would actually have voted for and not of something else. As a starting point, Mr. Speaker, I want to say that we must have a change of attitude. We must now begin to appreciate that when we go for elections, we must expect two possible outcomes.

I know that in this region, on this continent, we have had wrong attitudes where governing parties, when they call themselves ruling parties, they expect to rule for ever. We have actually had such sentiments being expressed not just in Zimbabwe, but from outside as well. For instance in South Africa, there were sentiments expressed by the former President there, Jacob Zuma, that the ANC would rule until the second coming of Jesus. I know in Kenya the former Vice President Mwai Kibaki, when he was Vice President of KANU, said that it was easier to cut a baobab tree with a razor blade than to remove KANU from power.

Coming closer home, Mr. Speaker, we heard statements in the past that for instance ZANU-PF would rule until donkeys grow horns and I remember former Minister Hon. Jonathan Moyo saying that no Government can reform itself out of power. That kind of attitude, those kind of sentiments are not helpful and I want to say, Mr. Speaker that at this point in time, we must now practice what we preach. When we say that we want to have free, fair, credible and peaceful elections, they must be so.

In this regard, Mr. Speaker, I will now look at what is missing from the current Bill which I want to believe that if the Hon. Minister is going to have a change of attitude from what used to obtain in the past, he will listen attentively to those proposals and have them incorporated, but before I do that, I want to look at what is currently in the current Bill. There are several challenges and I just want to highlight those which I think are critical

Section 67 of our Constitution is very clear. It gives all Zimbabwean citizens the right to vote and that right should not be tampered with. However, when we look at our electoral law, when we look at its provisions particularly in relation to the provisions which led to the registration of voters, you will find that they are very cumbersome. We had experiences, Mr. Speaker, where when people were trying to vote – the resident’s qualifications, an onus is being placed on the voter to prove where they stay when it is common cause that in this country, most people do not have title deeds and so on. Affidavits are not a sufficient cure. I have a problem in the sense that it proved very difficult for most of the people who do not have their own accommodation to actually obtain those affidavits. I do not see the need of having those cumbersome qualifications.

Why do we not simplify it and simply say that the potential voter should just be able to make a declaration of where they stay without having to appear before a Commissioner of Oath because once they make that declaration, it should suffice. Their ipse dixit should suffice. They just indicate that I stay or I reside at this particular place and they appear before an electoral officer and say so and that declarations which does not have to be signed by a commissioner of oaths, would then be deemed to be sufficient. I do not see any difference because the Commissioner of Oaths is not in a position to prove that the deponent who is appearing before him or her actually resided at the place indicated. So, to me, it serves no useful purpose.

Then the other aspect, Mr. Speaker, which I think should be better dealt with relates to the issue of intimidations. We have had a lot of complaints about people being asked to produce their voter registration slips. That tactic is not only illegal and in violation of the law, but it is also very intimidatory because you are dealing with simple folk who may not appreciate the exigencies of the matter, who then get intimidated. We must tighten this so that specific offences should be created and crafted in such a manner that anyone who does that is going to face the music so that it is not really left to people to report to the police but ZEC should then be empowered to deal with those errant members of society who are intimidating voters by asking them to produce those voter registration slips.

I will now look at aspects, Mr. Speaker, which I think should be better covered in the proposed amendment to the extent that then it makes it easier for all Zimbabweans to exercise their right to vote which is clearly enshrined in Section 67 of the Constitution. I will avert to the provision which is in the Constitution which is very clear and unambiguous and which clearly states that every adult Zimbabwean citizen, wherever they are, have got the right to vote. It means that it does not matter whether they are resident in Zimbabwe, whether they are resident in the United Kingdom, in New Zealand, in Australia or wherever, you must have that right which is covered.

What the fourth schedule to the Constitution merely does is to say that the electoral law can prescribe presidential requirements, but those requirements are just meant to ensure that voters are placed on the appropriate voters roll and not to hinder the voters from being able to vote. I believe that the current Electoral Act, even if it is amended by the current Bill will continue preventing people from being able to cast their vote even if they are so registered. I want to say that it is not necessary for citizens being required to prove where they stay. It should just suffice that they are Zimbabwean citizens; they have got their passport or their ID. They should simply declare that I stay in such and such a place and that on its own should suffice.

Mr. Speaker, I have already alluded to the issue of those who are not resident in Zimbabwe. I want to say we must administratively make it possible for those people to get registered without having them flying to Zimbabwe to register at a particular station. We must make adequate arrangements. We must progressively begin to put in place the necessary mechanisms which will enable those who are outside Zimbabwe to be able to vote.

Other than this category of people, we also have people who are or who will be in hospital – at the present moment, they should present themselves at a polling station. Why should that be? Why should not the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) make appropriate arrangements to go to hospitals so that those who may be indisposed at a particular point in time get registered? When it comes to the actual polling, we should put in place appropriate mechanisms for those who are in hospitals to be able to vote.

Apart from those in hospital, we also have people who are in prisons. The Hon. Minister, being a lawyer, knows that in our prisons, we have got a very large number of people who have not been tried or convicted. It is very clear that there is a presumption of innocence. Those people who are in remand prison are not even guilty of any offence but at the present moment, there is no mechanism put in place to enable them to exercise their right which is clearly spelt out in the Constitution. I would like to say that the electoral law must make provisions for those who are in remand prison to be able to vote. I will extend it further to say that even those who are convicted prisoners should be able to vote. There is no distinction in Section 67. One may have committed an offence – yes one may have been convicted by a court of law but you still enjoy your rights. The exceptions which are set out in the Bill of Rights do not extend to the right to vote. If the framers of the Constitution wanted this to be included, they would have explicitly said so. The fact that it does not reflect means that they still must enjoy their right to vote. I would like to say that should be covered.

Again, we have got persons with disabilities. We do not have mechanisms which are put in place. I want to say that our electoral law should make it easier. For example, we have got people who are blind. Why do we not have ballot papers which are in Braille so that those people can cast their vote on their own without the assistance of others? The current provisions require them to be assisted by an electoral officer then a police officer must be present. That compromises their right to vote in secret if a police officer witnesses where they are casting their vote. We must put in place the appropriate mechanism so that even those in wheel chairs and so on can be able to vote on their own without requiring the assistance of anyone else who will then get to know how they will have cast their vote when in fact the cornerstone and essence of free and fair elections is that the vote to be cast by a voter must be secret.

We also have got provisions in our current law which infringes the independence of the ZEC. I believe that this must be rectified so that at the end of the day, what is spelt out in the Constitution gets full effect in terms of the actual law that we have. For instance, the current Section 9.5, ZEC is not allowed to dismiss its Chief Elections Officer without the approval of the Minister of Justice. Why should it be so? ZEC is an independent body. It should have the full powers. If it is not happy with the conduct of some members of its secretariat, it should have the unfettered discretion to do so without seeking the approval of the Minister.

Again the current Section 12.1, ZEC is not allowed to accept donations or grants from any non-government source without the Minister’s approval. I believe that the people who are commissioners are persons of integrity. They should be able to determine who can assist them in terms of the financial resources that they require without the approval of the Minister who is a member of the Executive.

Again in terms of Section 18.5, the Minister is empowered to make regulations for mandatory automatic and electronic voter registration. Why should this power be given to the Hon. Minister and not to ZEC. Again, the accreditation of observers is not left to the discretion of ZEC but instead, it is largely put in the hands of the observers’ accreditation Committee where the Executive has got excessive representation.

When it comes to the making of regulation, ZEC and certain procedures, they need to seek the approval of the Minister who is not only a member of the Executive but also an interested party because most of the Hon. Ministers are political animals. As such, they have got their own interest. I would like to say that we should not allow members of the Executive to have this overbearing power on an independent body. The independent body should be left entirely to exercise its discretion when it comes to those matters.

We also have the issue of voter education ….

THE TEMPORARY SPEAKER (HON. MARUMAHOKO): Order, Hon. Gonese – you are left with three minutes.

HON. GONESE: Thank you Mr. Speaker. I will try to wind up. In terms of voter education, ZEC is given a monopoly over this provision and they infringe on the freedom of expression as guaranteed in terms of Section 61 of the Constitution. When it comes to actual polling, you will find that the usual practice has been that we get concerned too much with the actual election period without covering the pre-election period. Let us look at access to the media – the current provisions in the electoral law actually relate to the polling period after proclamation, after nomination of candidates. It does not cover the pre-election period. For instance, in this pre-election period, we have had excessive coverage of the current sitting President. But when it comes to the activities of the other political parties, they are not adequately covered. For instance, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) of which I am member, has held rallies throughout the country. What has been clear is that the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), for reasons best known to itself, has not been covering MDC rallies and yet this is the pre-election period; parties are gearing themselves for the elections and yet we have more coverage of even the first lady buying tomatoes and mangoes by the roadside instead of having coverage of our President, Advocate Nelson Chamisa addressing rallies. He was in Chinhoyi this week and he was in Masvingo the other day. That has not been covered at all. That is the problem whereby you then get coverage being restricted to some political parties. I know that during elections, ZEC will have powers over the media of coverage. I believe that the act should actually apply even to the pre-election period.

This also relates to the issue of observers – at the time of voter registration, that is where all the shenanigans and gerrymandering take place. We must have mechanisms for observers if they are so inclined, to come at this point in time during the pre-election period so that they can observe for themselves what is actually happening and not have a scenario where observers are invited when nominations have been done when in fact the damage would have been done before the nomination of candidates during the pre-election period.

Therefore, it is essential that as a nation, we need to have credible elections. We do not want anyone to cry foul…

THE TEMPORARY SPEAKER: Order, Hon. Member. Your time is up.

HON. GONESE: In conclusion, I would like to say that the Electoral Act needs extensive amendments. I was also going to talk about other laws like POSA and AIPPA which need to be amended so that they can fully give effect to the issue of free and fair elections. I thank you Hon. Speaker.”

Chamisa Warned Against Kicking Khupe Out

Expelling MDC vice president Thokozani Khupe could be disastrous for the opposition party ahead of the 2018 elections, analysts have warned.

This comes as the opposition party’s president, Nelson Chamisa, says Khupe has been given an extra three days — after defying a seven-day ultimatum — to repent or face automatic expulsion.

There has been embarrassing and humiliating squabbling before and after the death of Tsvangirai — a long-time and fierce former president Robert Mugabe’s rival — who succumbed to colon cancer.

Analysts canvassed by the Daily News believe that the two leaders — Khupe and Chamisa — “need each other” ahead of the elections and the late Tsvangirai’s succession was badly managed.

“I think the matter was poorly handled. Firstly, the whole issue was messed up by Tsvangirai who appointed two other deputies when Khupe was there. Secondly, Chamisa did not do well by avoiding an opportunity for stockholders of the party to vote for their leader at an extraordinary congress, instead he opted for appointment by an exclusive club of praise singers in the national council,” political analyst Maxwell Saungweme said.

“But I expected MDC elders to mediate a dialogue between the leaders and come up with a win-win solution. But they opted not to do their duty and left a conflict resolution strategy that left a winner and a loser. And this is not sustainable,” he said.

“They can expel her (Khupe), but she will go with those that believe in her. MDC will also win or lose national elections as an intolerant party that does not know how to deal with dissenting voices and still remain as one party.  The party needs to have everyone and also attract more supporters. Expelling Khupe will leave an intolerant and less cohesive party,” he added.

Eldred Masunungure, also a political analyst, said it would be unfair for MDC to expel Khupe.

“What is happening in the MDC is embarrassing and disappointing. The president is acting in a manner which shows that he wants to consolidate power … through eliminating enemies so firing  Khupe will be another sign that the MDC leadership needs to consolidate power,” he said.

“Khupe is an elected deputy president and I think it’s unfair. Instead of expelling each other, the party must unite ahead of elections. They need to engage elders within the party and settle their differences,” Masunungure said.

United Kingdom-based political analyst Alex Magaisa said the ambiguous MDC constitution caused the serious fights.

“What is happening within the MDC is a reflection of the pains of transition. It was never going to be easy to transit from the reign of its founding leader Tsvangirai to a new era under his successor.

“The pain of transition is characterised by both law and politics, with a collision between principle and expediency and between popular will and legality. The party was reckless, however, not to attend to its constitution, which is farcical,” he wrote on his blog — Big Saturday Read.

“The current situation would have been an easier affair if the party had a clear constitution. However, the current constitution is incomplete, vague and elusive.

However, another political analyst, Shakespear Hamauswa, said Chamisa must expel Khupe before it is too late.

“It is very fair and in fact too late. Khupe has shown beyond any reasonable doubt that her mission was to destroy Tsvangirai and she is simply looking for a strategic exit from MDC. That is one that will give blame to Chamisa on one hand and on the other hand that which will leave a web of network for future assignments to work against the party,” he said.

“She is simply building sympathisers who will remain in the party but her actions have shown that she accomplished her mission.

“If she was serious about mending relations, she could have shown willingness to negotiate with the other team,” added Hamauswa.- Daily News

Mugabe Pulls Out All The Stops To Bring Mnangagwa Down

Ray Nkosi | Former President Robert Mugabe the man disliked by many for being at the centre of the economic and political ruin endured by many Zimbabweans, millions who are now scattered all over the world, has two options either to sink or swim.

Sink or swim the only two options for the 94 year old former strongman many believed was untouchable until he was ousted surreptiously in a military coup on November 15, with many Zimbabweans taking to the streets to cheer the departure of a man who represented everything that went wrong to a once great nation.

Months later Mugabe is back and seems to have plan, not to sink but to swim and reverse his political fortunes against the man who deputised him Emmerson Mnangagwa, the country’s acting President until the next crucial elections.

As the dust settles and the glaring shortcomings of the Mnangagwa administration are open for all to see, Mugabe has conveniently chosen a come back, which has attracted mixed reactions, some feel it is within his democratic right to do so, while others have taken offense. Either way Mugabe is a factor that cannot be ignored within Zanu PF itself in particular and the country’s national politics in general

The local Daily News reports that Mugabe is said to be stepping up his efforts to get back at his successor, Mnangagwa, despite last week’s reports that a number of people and organisations are working hard behind the scenes to try and reconcile the two men.

At the same time, analysts have savaged Mugabe for being a shameless hypocrite after more of his skeletons were revealed by State media at the weekend — showing that far from being a principled and caring leader, the former president was mostly working for his personal benefit in his nearly four decades in power.

“He (Mugabe) is a very bitter man. Contrary to what you have been told that he is open to reconciling with ED, Mugabe and Grace are working tirelessly to derail the new dispensation.

“This is why, as strange as it seems, he is even reaching out to elements within the MDC, as well as to some businesspeople, all in the vain hope that his silly plans will work.

“But to be honest, and despite enlisting the services of many soldiers of fortune in politics and communications, ari kungovukura zvake sembwa (his is a hopeless mission),” a senior Zanu PF official who claims to be privy to Mugabe’s political manoeuvring told the Daily News yesterday.

Mugabe resigned from the top office on November 21 last year, a few hours after Parliament had initiated proceedings to impeach him.

This happened after he had refused to leave office during eight tense days that began with the military intervening in the governance of the country.

But the 94-year-old has stunned both the authorities and ordinary Zimbabweans alike in recent weeks by re-entering the political arena and holding several meetings with opposition leaders and some former Zanu PF bigwigs — including openly lending his support to the newly-formed National Patriotic Front (NPF) led by retired brigadier general Ambrose Mutinhiri who quit the ruling party a fortnight ago.

The NPF has since revealed that Mugabe had endorsed the party after he met Mutinhiri at his “Blue Roof” mansion in Harare.

Apart from hosting former Cabinet ministers, Mugabe has also held meetings with former vice president Joice Mujuru, whom he sacked in 2014 over untested allegations that she and a host of other senior Zanu PF figures wanted to topple him from power.

It has now also been claimed that when Mugabe went to South Africa last week under the pretext of flying there to see his son Robert Junior — who is said to have impregnated a South African woman — he had in fact gone there to hold high level talks with some Generation 40 (G40) members and other potential allies in his mission to destroy Mnangagwa.

Meanwhile, both analysts and prominent political figures told the Daily News yesterday that Mugabe was “playing a dangerous game” with his latest foray into politics — saying this also had the potential to destabilise the country.

“It’s now clear that the Mugabes would rather have anyone else in charge of the country after the forthcoming elections than leave Ngwena (Mnangagwa) at the helm.

“It is an interesting time for Zimbabwe. But the danger is that the current goings on put Zimbabwe on the edge and carry the potential for strife that can destabilise the country,” analyst Maxwell Saungweme said.

Businessman-cum-politician Energy Mutodi also warned that Mugabe was “taking matters too faf” by dabbling in politics — when Mnangagwa’s government had “treated him with respect”.

“Mugabe has so many skeletons in his cupboard … and can therefore be tried for various crimes, including crimes against humanity.

“If he keeps trying to re-launch himself in politics and to fight against President Emmerson Mnangagwa this may end badly for him,” Mutodi told the Daily News.

University of Zimbabwe political science lecturer Eldred Masunungure said while Mnangagwa had tried to assist Mugabe, the former president was seemingly not reciprocating this goodwill.

“However, he (Mnangagwa) has to tread carefully. He has to manoeuvre his way in such a way that will not only appease his supporters, but also appease Mugabe’s.

“There is also a need not to alienate the Zezurus … and he (Mnangagwa) must appear to be taking care not only of Mugabe, but also his legacy.

“But these things require reciprocity. If the ED government is taking care of Mugabe, he should also likewise reciprocate,” Masunungure said.

“He (Mugabe) has not been acting in good faith thus far … and now we have revelations of Mugabe demanding money in cash. That is a warning sign,” he added.

Academic Stephen Chan, who is a professor of world politics in London, also said Mnangagwa should not be drawn into a war with someone “who has nothing to lose”.

“I think Mnangagwa can safely allow Mugabe to vent his spleen. It is the sounding off of a disappointed man. But even those people who still admire Mugabe understand that he allowed the country to decline economically, to a depth still being uncovered.

“Mnangagwa should concentrate on these economic issues and show a respectful disdain towards the former president,” Chan said.

During his appearance at the African Union’s annual meeting in Ethiopia in January, Mnangagwa told the continental leaders that there was no need to worry about Mugabe and his family’s security, as they were well-looked after.

The government has since gone on to give Mugabe an eye-watering exit package which includes benefits commensurate with those of a sitting head of State.

Details of the frail nonagenarian’s massive handshake were announced in the Government Gazette at the end of last year under Presidential Pension and Retirement Packages Notice 2017.

Still, Mugabe has been moaning about being ill-treated by the government, to the extent of telling an AU mission that met with him at his palatial Borrowdale mansion last month that he was being denied his benefits.

Over the weekend, more of Mugabe’s dirty linen tumbled out. After State media accused him of externalising millions of dollars and owning a staggering 21 farms last week, government newspapers revealed yesterday that the nonagenarian was getting his salary and benefits in cash all along.

Mugabe’s critics said this was hardly surprising given that at one time, when he was still president, he had revealed that he kept his money under his bed.

Mugabe-Ngwena Reconcile – What Business Is It For A Goat To Stop Hyenas Fighting?

Wilbert Mukori | “Hupenzi, inyama yegakava!” (There is nothing worse than a stubborn fool!) So, goes a Shina adage!

“The country’s sulking former leader, Robert Mugabe – together with his restless wife, Grace – is said to be stepping up his efforts to get back at his successor, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, despite last week’s reports that a number of people and organisations are working hard behind the scenes to try and reconcile the two men,” reported the Dailynews.

These people want Mugabe and Mnangagwa reconciled? To what end and purpose?

Of course, these individuals are the stubborn fools who have no idea what is in their own best interest. Mugabe and Mnangagwa are like two hyenas fighting each other to the death, it is in the goat’s best interest that neither of the two get out of this alive!

After Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends sold-out during the GNU and failed to implement even one democratic reform in five years the nation lost its best chance since independence to end the Zanu PF dictatorship.

The dog-eat-dog infighting in Zanu PF which started soon after the rigged July 2013 elections has created another opportunity for the nation to finally get the democratic reforms implemented.

Whenever the devil closes the door to imprison God’s people, the Lord always opens a window for them to escape. Robert Mugabe, as the Devil’s imp, did not have to work hard on the breathtakingly corrupt and incompetent Tsvangirai and his MDC friends to make them forget about the reforms. The door to reforms was slammed shut in our faces!

The infighting in Zanu PF has opened a window for us to force through the reforms. When Mugabe booted out Joice Mujuru and her supporters in 2014 he pressed the self-distract button to start a process that has destroyed Zanu PF. The party is imploding, the core is rotten and the whole edifice is curving in.

“You must understand that the military coup left Zanu-PF in tatters,” The leader of the new political party, National Patriotic Front and former Zanu PF minister, Ambrose Mutinhiri, told Everson Mashava in a recent interview.

Of course, the Zanu PF in tatters is far easier to get to implement the democratic reforms. The mistake the fools now calling to reconcile Mnangagwa and Mugabe are making is they want the infighting in Zanu PF to now stop because the coup has brought about the democratic changes the nation has been dying for. President Mnangagwa and his Junta have mounted an all-out offensive to convince the naïve and gullible that the coup has delivered a “new dispensation” guaranteed to deliver free, fair and credible elections and economic prosperity.

Mnangagwa’s clarion cry of “Zimbabwe is open for business!” has had no foreign investor takers because they are a shrewd lot. They know talk is cheap, they want to see concrete evidence that Zimbabwe is indeed open for business. Investors have shied away from Zimbabwe all these last decades because Zimbabwe, under Mugabe’s corrupt and tyrannical rule, had become a pariah state ruled by thugs.

The November coup saw the same thugs whom Mugabe had used all these years to impose his tyrannical rule boot him out of office and share out the spoils of seized power amongst themselves. Only the politically naïve and gullible were ever fooled into believing the removal of one dictator and replacing him with another constitute any significant change.

Zimbabwe is still a pariah state ruled by the same ruthless thugs and hence the reason investors have not heeded Mnangagwa’s call.

With no foreign investors coming, President Mnangagwa’s promised economic recovery is just a mirage in the desert!

President Mnangagwa has already failed the acid test on his sincerity to hold free, fair and credible elections. Ever since the 2008 to 2013 GNU everyone has accepted that Zimbabwe must first implement the raft of democratic reforms as the pre-requisite for free and fair elections. Mnangagwa has not only refused to implement the reforms but, worse still, has been denouncing those calling for reforms as barking dogs!

Indeed, ever since taking over power from Mugabe, the military Junta in Harare has carried on implementing the vote rigging schemes Zanu PF had planned for this year’s elections as if the November coup has not happened. President Mnangagwa has gone on to buy the Chiefs new trucks as Mugabe had promised. The trucks are a bribe to the Chiefs who will, in return, frog march the rural voters to vote for Zanu PF.

President Mnangagwa and his Junta’s refusal to implement the democratic reforms and hold free and fair elections is the conclusive evidence that the regime is not giving up its carte blanche powers to rig elections and stay in power regardless of the people’s democratic wish for meaningful political change.

Robert Mugabe and his deposed G40 friends have a score to settle with Mnangagwa and his Lacoste faction. It just so happened that the former know exactly how the latter is rigging this year’s elections, after all Mugabe and company have helped design, fund and operated the vote rigging juggernaut all these years.

Unless we can get someone who can reveal how Mnangagwa rigged the coming elections, the regime may will get away with yet another rigged election. If the regime get away with the rigged elections this year, it will have the next five fives to regroup and consolidate its strangle hold on power. If Mnangagwa is not going to implement any reforms this year, he is not going to do so in the next five years either! Mugabe and his G40 friends will see to that if the Junta rigs this year’s elections, it does not get away with it.

Getting Mugabe and Mnangagwa to reconcile will only give the latter a chance to bribe his former Zanu PF colleagues to turn a blind eye to the Junta’s vote rigging. The big losers will be the ordinary Zimbabweans who will be stuck with the same corrupt, vote rigging and tyrannical Zanu PF dictatorship or be it under new management!

Zanu PF is imploding, there is still a lot of fight still left in both G40 and Lacoste, in that either faction, given a chance will waste no time in imposing the reconstituted Zanu PF dictatorship. We must not be concerned about stopping the two factions fighting until we have the democratic reforms safely implemented and the right to free, fair and credible elections guaranteed.

A dictatorship, even one under the new dictator Mnangagwa, will never allow a healthy and functional democracy to co-exist along side it. So, all this all this talk of giving Mnangagwa and his Junta “a chance to prove themselves” is all nonsense. We have a chance to dismantle the dictatorship, we must make the most of this and not waste it as happened during the GNU.

It is not for the goat to stop two hyenas fighting; especially when the fight is over which one of them should have the goat for dinner. The goat must make good his escape!

Beitbridge Town Finally Accorded Municipal Status

By Paul Nyathi

After years of pushing for it, it’s all joy for the Beitbrdge community after the town was finally granted the Municipal Status.

President Mnangagwa declared the Town Council to Municipal status in a Statutory Instrument through a Government Gazette published last Friday.

The status was attained after the border town’s huge growth in recent years and its strategic economic location.

The proclamation was made in terms of Section 4 (1) of the Urban Councils Act (Chapter 29:15).

“And whereas by Section 12 (1) of the said Act, it is provided that in any proclamation establishing a council the President shall fix a date for the coming into being of the council, and whereas the Beitbridge Town Council has been consulted and whereas Section 11 (1) of the said Act has been complied with, and I consider it desirable to make this proclamation, now therefore, under and by virtue of the powers vested in the President as aforesaid, I do by this proclamation (a) abolish the Town Council of Beitbridge and Beitbridge Town Council and (b) establish a municipality in place of the said town of Beitbridge and (c) establish municipal council for the said municipality, which council shall come into being on the 9th of March 2018,” read the notice.

Beitbridge Town has an estimated population of 70 000 and a further 13 000 people in transit to and from South Africa pass through on a daily basis.

Beitbrdge has been the most developing town in Matabeleland South since attaining the Town Status in 2006.

Two years ago, Government appointed a commission led by Ms Erica Jones, a principal director in the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, to look into the local authority’s request for municipal status.

The commission submitted its report to Government for final decision making such accorded the town the Municipal Status.

Mnangagwa Turns Beitbridge Into A City | BREAKTHROUGH STATUS UPGRADE

By Paul Nyathi| As part of his economic turnaround strategy, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has upgraded Beitbridge to city status.

This long awaited development means that Beitbridge will now grow like other self governing principalities like Harare and Bulawayo. There are many advantages to this as can be seen for instance in Bulawayo being run better that the capital city, Harare

WATCH: SADC Elections Body Meets Zim Govt

The SADC Electoral Advisory Council is in Zimbabwe to assess the country’s preparedness for the holding of free, fair and credible elections, in line with the SADC principles and guidelines governing democratic elections.

For the first time, the government of Zimbabwe has promised unconfined access to all those wishing to observe elections that are slated for this year.

The seven member SADC delegation, which arrived in the country yesterday, held its first key engagement with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Retired Lieutenant General Sibusiso Moyo to brief him on their terms of reference.

Minister Moyo welcomed the team and asked the body to provide as much technical support as they can to warrant transparent and credible elections.

Chairperson of the SADC Elections Advisory Council, Advocate Leshele Thoahlane said their main task is to assess the state of readiness by Zimbabwe to hold free, fair and credible elections this year.

The findings from the week long pre-election assessment process will be presented to the SADC Executive Secretary for onward transmission to the SADC heads of state.

Another mission will then be sent by the regional body to observe the elections.

Opposition parties have welcomed the opening up of electoral processes by the Zimbabwean government, saying it will help ensure a level playing field as most election disputes occur way before the polling day and those with concerns will have ample time to air out their grievances.

The SADC Election Advisory Council is being led by Advocate Thoahlane from Lesotho and other members of the council include Professor Mpo Molomo of Botswana, Justice Dorothy de Gabriel of Malawi, Reverend Daniel Ngoy Mulunda of DRC and three members of the SADC Secretariat.

The council was created to provide an advisory role on issues concerning elections and the enhancement of democracy and good governance in the SADC region.

Teams from the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU) are also expected to visit Zimbabwe on a similar undertaking. – state media

WATCH: Wicknell Chivayo Faces Arrest

POLICE PROCEEDINGS into convicted fraudster Wicknell Chivayo’s dodgy tenders have closed in on the man, as ZimEye.com reveals.

This was detailed today as the Zimbabwe Power Company secretary, Mrs Nora Tsomondo told the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Energy.

It was revealed that ZPC has for a long time known that Chivayo does not qualify for any tender award, and also that he is disqualified to hold a company directorship. She said the police were now through with gathering evidence aimed at arresting Mr Chivayo.

Zimbabwe’s Companies Act as ZimEye.com reveals, dictates that a person who obtains a company directorship knowing that they are a convict of fraud and have been imprisoned for more than  6 months, is liable for a 2 year jail term. The Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (formerly State Procurement Board) told the committee that the award of the solar power tender project to Mr Chivhayo was unlawful. Lawyers pulled out evidence that Chivayo has a 5 year jail term on his head for which he served an effective 3 years while inside the Chikurubi Maximum prison.

Earlier today ZimEye broadcast the hearings – ALSO SEE below the Companies Act extract showing how Chivayo faces a 10 year jail term:

Mutinhiri Has Not Committed A Crime – Maridadi

Mabvuku-Tafara MP, James Maridadi (MDC-T) has chided Zanu PF legislators for being intolerant to divergent political views and rushing to criminalise the newly-formed New Patriotic Front (NPF) led by Ambrose Mutinhiri.

Maridadi was contributing to debate on the second reading stage of the Electoral Amendment Bill on Friday, where he criticised Zanu PF for perennially being in electoral mode, instead of taking a break to fix the economy.

“Zanu PF are declaring war on Mutinhiri for forming a new political party and have been bashing Mutinhiri in the State-controlled media, as if he has committed a crime,” he said.

“They have gone to the extent of saying that he is beholden to former President Robert Mugabe, as if it is a crime. I would have preferred for Mutinhiri to join the main opposition MDC-T, but it is his constitutional right to join any political party of his choice,” he said.

The MP said if the electoral playing field was not even, then MDC-T president, Nelson Chamisa would refrain from contesting, which would make the election illegitimate.

“If electoral reforms are not implemented, Chamisa said he might not contest the elections. The Zanu PF government needs more participation in this election than the MDC-T and if Chamisa does not participate, then the elections will be a farce and Zanu PF will suffer problems of legitimacy. Right now, President Emmerson Mnangagwa suffers the problem of legitimacy and the 2018 elections are important for legitimacy,” he said.

Maridadi called on State media to give equal coverage to all political players in the country.
“When we go for elections, ZBC must be accessible to all political parties. They should not take out of context rallies of opposition political parties. Chamisa had a rally in Chinhoyi for two hours, but he has not even been given one minute of coverage by ZBC,” he said.

Maridadi said the ruling party must also desist from using rice, which is donated to the government social services department for vote buying.

The MP said archaic laws like the Public Order and Security Act (Posa) and the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (Aippa) must be repealed.

“We cannot continue to use legislation, which was adopted 37 years ago. Why should we continue to hold on to relics of colonialism? Posa and Aippa must go,” he said. Newsday

AirZim Workers Lose Court Case

The Labour Court has ordered more than 100 former Air Zimbabwe workers to stop demonstrating at the company’s premises.

In a ruling passed on Friday, labour court judges Euna Makamure and Godfrey Musariri, described the former workers’ industrial action as illegal.

“Wherefore declared that, the job action (demonstration and trespass since November 27, 2017) carried out by the respondents (National Air Workers’ Union and Air Transport Union) is declared unlawful and the said action shall be terminated forthwith,” read part of the ruling.

On January 15, 2018, Labour and Social Welfare minister, Petronella Kangonye challenged the industrial action by former Air Zimbabwe workers, which had forced the airline to cancel an international audit that was due.

The disgruntled ex-Air Zimbabwe workers forced the struggling airliner to cancel an International Air Transport Association operational safety audit, which was due to start, as they picketed at Robert Mugabe International Airport demanding their salaries for 2011 and 2012.

The government has pledged to assume the airline’s $300 million debt, which includes the wages owed to the workers, to enable it to start on a clean slate.

The airline is currently only servicing three regional routes to Zambia’s Lusaka, Johannesburg in South Africa and Tanzania’s Dar-es-Salaam, albeit with two aircraft. Newsday

Residents Unfazed By Council’s Threats To Engage Debt Collectors

Terrence Mawawa, Masvingo

Local residents have called on Masvingo City Council (MCC) to resort to dialogue rather than taking legal action.

Speaking to ZimEye.com yesterday, prominent human rights activist and Masvingo Residents Trust Chairperson Prosper Tiringindi urged the local authority to reconsider its proposed move to take legal action against defaulting residents- in the payment of water bills.

Last week Masvingo City Council threatened to engage debt collectors to help the local authority recover millions of dollars in unpaid water bills.

“We are against the move as you know that Zimbabwean Citizens are facing serious cash woes.

We advise the city council to come up with a flexible payment plan .

Council should first collect areas from government departments before they come to general residents .

We know that the army and other government department have arrears as well,” said Tiringindi.

CRIMINAL EXPOSED: Businessman Kidnaps Children, ZRP Conjoined

By Chipinge Whistleblower| Chipinge Businessman on a kidnapping and assault spree. People at Dimire village under Headman Mambandi Sigauke near Mt Selinda Mission, south east of Chipinge town are now living in fear after local businessman Patrick Murembwa went amok and started kidnapping and assaulting minors in the village. Murembwa, who operates a General Dealer Store at Dimire business centre alleged that between November and December 2017, four minors, Blessing Mungwari, Terrence Chigumuntu, Killer Chinguno and Kembeni Masengure stole broilers from his fowl run. The broilers have an estimated value of US$ 35.

Annoyed by the incident, Murembwa in the company of his security guard who is still at large allegedly visited the boy’s homestead and kidnapped them while the parents were sleeping in the next hut. Murembwa then force marched the boys to Mutsaa Store at Dimire business centre. Upon arrival, he handcuffed the boys on an iron pole before he took turns to assault the minors using a wooden log and open fists. He then watered the boys and left them for dead before he proceeded to Chipinge town. The boys were later rescued by passer bys in the following morning. The matter was reported several times at Zona Police Base, Chako, Grass flats and Chipinge Central Police Station. However, no arrests were effected. The boys suffered severe injuries. The minors have also denied the broiler theft charges.

What has agitated the villagers is that Murembwa is roaming scot free and publicly boasts that he was a richman hence was immune from prosecution and could easily bribe the police officers handling the matter. One enlightened villager Mrs Thoko Sithole described Murembwa’s conduct as very unruly, silly and myopic. She pointed out that Murembwa had taken the law into his own hands. She further implored Godwin Matanga in his capacity as Commissioner General of Police to investigate the matter and bring the culprits to book.

Efforts to get a comment from the Officer Commanding Police in Manicaland Province Senior Assistant Commissioner Dorothy Kupara were fruitless as her mobile was not reachable.

Chamisa To Remove Shona Teachers From Matabeleland Schools

MDC-T supporters cheer to Chamisa’s declaration that he will remove teachers who can not speak local languages.

By Paul Nyathi| Newly installed opposition MDC-T President who also leads the MDC Alliance coalition, Nelson Chamisa says that he will remove all Shona speaking teachers and civil servants from Matabeleland as soon as he gets into power.

Speaking at a lowly attended Alliance coalition rally with just about 2000 people at the border town of Plumtree Matabeleland South on Sunday, Chamisa said that as soon as he gets into power he will end the ZANU PF culture of deploying people to work in areas where they can not speak the local language.

“As soon as we get into power we will solve the problem of teachers being deployed to work in areas where they can not speak the local language,” he said.

“When we are done with sorting the teachers we will then move to sorting out the nurses and the police who must also be able to speak local languages,” he added.

Chamisa was responding to wide spread calls by people from Matabeleland region for government to stop deploying teachers into areas where they can not speak the local languages.

In his address Chamisa also promised to turn the two very busy border towns in Matabeleland South, Beitbridge and Plumtree into big cities to show for the revenue generated at the two border posts.

Chamisa promised the gathering that his government will solve the country’s cash crisis in no time as they have rich partners on stand by to bring money into the country.

“We will solve this cash crisis in no time with the assistance of people like Tendai Biti who know how to run finances,” he said.

“We have strategic partners outside the country who are ready to plough funds into the country and they can not do this to the ZANU PF government which is full of corrupt thieves.” VIDEO ROLL:

Chamisa To Construct 4 Lane Highways Across Zimbabwe And Turn Vic Falls into Las Vegas

The ZANU PF controlled ZBC on Monday appeared to ridicule MDC leader Nelson Chamisa’s bullet train promise by reporting saying, “the MDC Alliance leader who last week announced he intends to introduce speed trains said the alliance have plans to construct four lane highways across the country, turn Vic Falls into Las Vegas and construct a University of Tourism and Fisheries in Binga…”

The state media was reporting on Chamisa’s Plumtree rally.

ZimEye avails the footage from the rally below in Plumtree as he was pounded on while holding onto the mic:

While critics have ridiculed Emmerson Mnangagwa over this 100 Day turn around period, the President has reportedly secured over $3 billion in just 90 days.

Mnangagwa makes the revelations in his latest op-ed published Monday morning.

He speaks of the day when the coup happened in November last year. His nemesis Jonathan Moyo says there was a bloody coup. But Mnangagwa calls it a transition led by the youth. He says it was the Zimbabwean people, led by the youth: who went to the streets peacefully and joyfully, determined to have their voices heard. They called for freedom, progress and a new way of doing things. Though supported by the military, this was a popular, peaceful revolution. Watching the events unfold from exile, I was deeply proud of my fellow Zimbabweans.

In a major turning point in our history, President Robert Mugabe resigned and the first transition of power in 37 years followed. On Nov. 24, I took office as the new president of Zimbabwe. In the past three months, I have heard the call of my people. I share their vision and am committed to delivering.

I am working toward building a new Zimbabwe: a country with a thriving and open economy, jobs for its youth, opportunities for investors, and democracy and equal rights for all.

We are starting from a difficult position. Today our economy is struggling, our youth lack opportunities, too many people are unable to afford essential goods, and our infrastructure is stuck in the past.

Our recovery strategy is based on creating conditions for an investment-led economic recovery that puts a premium on job creation. In three months, we have secured $3.1 billion worth of commitments from across the world, which will create jobs and opportunities.

We are embarking on a journey toward real growth, to empower our people with skills, opportunities and jobs. We will continue taking bold steps to liberalize and introduce greater market forces, building an economy in which enterprise is allowed, encouraged and protected. If we are to succeed in this global economy, we must empower our entrepreneurs and foster innovation at every level.

As we put the past behind us and embrace this new dawn, we are calling upon the international community to join us. The creation of a National Peace and Reconciliation Committee, which I recently signed into law, will enable us to move forward now as one united people, part of the greater community of nations. Whatever misunderstandings we may have had in the past, let these make way for a new beginning.

Zimbabwe is changing — politically, economically and societally — and we ask those who have punished us in the past to reconsider their sanctions against us. Zimbabwe is a land of potential, but it will be difficult to realize it with the weight of sanctions hanging from our necks.

In the past three months, my government has taken significant steps to assuage concerns and assure any skeptics of our intentions. We have published an ambitious, responsible and stabilizing budget aimed at reducing our deficits and committing to repaying our debts.

We amended the Indigenization & Economic Empowerment Act, which had constrained foreign ownership of local businesses and discouraged much needed investment. We have now removed this constraint in almost all sectors, sending a clear signal that Zimbabwe is open for business.

I wish to assure everyone that all foreign investments will be safe and secure in the new Zimbabwe. Transparency and the rule of law will be key. We have already begun the effort to defeat the corruption that has plagued our nation, including requiring cabinet ministers to declare their assets and creating anti-corruption courts. Many Zimbabweans moved their money out of the country. I offered them amnesty from prosecution if they brought the money back within three months. Hundreds of millions of dollars have already been brought back to Zimbabwe.

There are voices both at home and abroad who have sought to convince the world that nothing has changed in Zimbabwe. I refute those unfair and unfounded claims and commit that we are bringing about a new era of transparency, openness and commitment to the rule of law.

We continue to work with civil society to ensure that human rights concerns are addressed immediately, opening channels of dialogue with opposition parties, prominent NGOs and international organizations.

I commit that in the new Zimbabwe, all citizens will have the right of free speech, free expression and free association. At the heart of this will be free and fair elections, to be held as scheduled in 2018, with all impartial observers who wish to witness the new Zimbabwean democracy at work welcome to attend. I extend that invitation once again.

Zimbabwe is changing, and quickly. So in this light I urge the international community to heed the saying, “when the facts change,” change your minds.

We cannot remain hostage to our past but instead must look to the future hand in hand with our international partners. The new Zimbabwe fully affirms its place in the family of nations, with all the responsibilities this entails.

Those who cling to the sanctions are stuck in the old Zimbabwe — the Zimbabwe of poverty and international isolationism. We are bringing about the new Zimbabwe — a country of hope and opportunity, a country that engages with the world and strives toward prosperity.

We invite the international community to partner with us and help us turn our country around. Together we will unlock Zimbabwe’s vast potential and build a new, prosperous and democratic Zimbabwe for all.

Khupe And Chamisa To Meet

By Staff Reporter| MDC Vice President Thokozani Khupe is set to meet her colleague Nelson Chamisa as the matter between them is decided upon.

Dr Khupe’s personal assistant Witness Dube told ZimEye.com she has dealt with things quietly since she is not into making media noise.

“Look, Dr Khupe is not somebody who is very media friendly, she doesn’t respond to a lot of things that she is supposed to respond to and this is just one of them;…it is very normal, it is every common for her not to respond to in a friendly to anything in the media, she is really not a media kind of a person…”

He however said Khupe would not recognise Chamisa’s presidency because the National Council meeting which appointed him was not substantive. It was ” just a consultative meeting.”

He said Khupe has privately engaged a group called the Elders of the party.

Mvukwesi ready to host Zimbabwe

NATIONAL NEWS

By Paul Nyathi | Very few people would still remember that the small Mashonaland Central mining and farming town of Mvurwi used to be called Mvukwesi during the colonial era.

Nostalgic memories will be ignited over the Easter holidays when Mvukwesi Primary School in the town plays host to the annual National Darts Association of Zimbabwe National Championships.

The challenge will see all the country’s ten provinces converge in the town to battle it out for Zimbabwean inter provincial champions.

In a circular to the provinces NDAZ Secretary General Stephen Mwarindira said that the provinces should each bring five teams for the challenge. The teams will be two senior men’s teams, juniors team of one for boys and one for girls and a ladies senior team.

The four day tournament has through the years been dominated by Mashonaland West who are led by the Zimbabwean champion David Nyemba and his son Kudzanai.

The Nyemba family recently helped their Chinhoyi based A Team clinch the National Clubs Champion of Champions held in Munyati in the Midlands.

Mashonaland West will jet into Mvurwi knowing that they are the team to beat. Bitter rivals Harare province who always play second fiddle to the team to their West will fight to turn the apple cart over.

Speaking in a recent interview national TV, NDAZ President Menard Moyo said that all was set for the tournament and provinces have started submitting submitting their team lists for the tournament.

“Its all systems go for the tournament, all arrangements have been completed and teams have been preparing very hard for the games,” said Moyo.

Mugabe’s New Patriotic Front, 106 Other Parties To Contest Elections

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) says at least 107 political parties, including the National Patriotic Front (NPF) linked to former president Robert Mugabe, are expected to contest the forthcoming general elections.

Commissioner Qhubani Moyo told VOA Studio 7 that each party is, however, not likely to field presidential, senatorial, parliamentary and local government candidates nationwide.

“Already 107 parties have informed us that they exist and so indications are they will be participating in the general elections. We usually hold a meeting with political parties ahead of elections and they normally come in large numbers … about 80 or 90. When we checked our numbers yesterday they were 107 political parties.”

Moyo said NPF is among these political parties that will contest the polls sometime this year.

The NPF is associated with former president Robert Mugabe, Professor Jonathan Moyo, former First Lady Grace Mugabe, Saviour Kasukuwere, Patrick Zhuwao and other members of the so-called Generation 40 faction of the ruling Zanu PF party, which was ousted last November in a military-style intervention by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces in conjunction with then vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mugabe has already told the African Union and close associates that he was unconstitutionally removed from office through a military coup. He has not yet declared his allegiance to the NPF led by Retired Brigadier General Ambrose Mutinhiri.

Professor Moyo, Kasukuwere, Zhuwao and others fled the country when the army declared that it wanted to get rid of “criminal elements” surrounding Mugabe, who allegedly wanted his wife to succeed him.

Moyo noted that “we have no problem in having any party, including the NPF, in contesting the elections,” adding that, “we do not even concern ourselves with names of leaders of political parties.”

He said the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission’s mandate is to conduct a free, credible and fair election. “… Therefore it is not our duty to block people from contesting the polls. Whether Mugabe is contesting or not it’s not our business.”

Zanu PF has already warned the former president from taking part in the polls saying ruling party activists have already chosen Mnangagwa to contest the presidential election.

Moyo also said each contesting party is not expected to contest the presidential elections “as some parties prefer only participating in parliamentary and local government elections.”

JUNTA LATEST: Grace Mugabe Warned Of A Very Bad Ending

State media in Zimbabwe on Sunday rounded on former president Robert Mugabe and his wife Grace, suggesting in one editorial that the military operation that removed Mugabe from power be extended to his Harare mansion.

“How about Operation Restore Legacy at Blue Roof Mansion?,” said the headline on a column by Sunday Mail columnist, Bishop Lazarus.

‘Greedy and insecure’

In it the writer suggested that Mugabe had been “taken hostage in this rebellious house” and put “in a tight corner with the greedy and insecure former First Lady”.

The army denied its operation that put Emmerson Mnangagwa in power was a coup; instead officials said the move aimed at targeting target “criminals” around the president, a likely reference to Grace Mugabe and her allies.

‘Make the former president understand what’s going on’

In recent days Mugabe and his wife have been accused of backing a new political party led by former army officer and cabinet minister Ambrose Mutinhiri.

The Sunday Mail columnist said emissaries should be sent to Mugabe’s “Blue Roof” mansion “to make the former president understand what is going on. These people should make the former first lady understand the trouble she is putting herself into. All this is likely to end very, very bad for her.”

A cartoon in the same paper showed Mugabe staring out of a blank space with the word “mischief” written instead of a moustache.

No longer Comrade

State newspapers now only refer to Mugabe as “Mr”, stripping him of his decades-old title of “Comrade”.- News24

Shock As Ex Con Kills Neighbour

NATIONAL NEWS

An ex-convict from Kwekwe who was released from prison recently allegedly fatally stabbed his neighbour following a misunderstanding during a beer drink.

Acting Midlands provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende confirmed the murder which occurred last Wednesday at around 3AM in Amaveni Suburb in Kwekwe.

She said the ex-convict, Ntokozo Ncube (28), allegedly fatally stabbed Simbarashe Ruvingo (30) while they were drinking beer at Amaveni Shops.

Ass Insp Mukwende said after committing the crime, Ncube allegedly fled to Zhombe in an attempt to evade arrest.

“I can confirm that police in Kwekwe are investigating a case of murder where a man died after being attacked with a knife by a man who was recently released from prison. It is alleged that the suspect Ntokozo Ncube was drinking beer in a nightclub together with Simbarashe Ruvingo at Amaveni Shops,” she said.

Asst Insp Mukwende said Ncube and Ruvingo were seen by fellow patrons drinking beer together while dancing to music.

She said it is alleged that Ncube suddenly withdrew a knife from his pocket and stabbed Ruvingo on the collar bone.

“After stabbing Ruvingo, Ncube dragged him outside but other patrons followed behind and upon seeing that the patrons were following behind he chased them away while threatening to stab them. The suspect boarded a car and fled from the scene. Ruvingo stood up before collapsing on the tarmac and died,” she said.

Asst Insp Mukwende said the suspect was arrested in Zhombe on the same day following a tip off. “The suspect is in police custody and assisting with investigations, he will appear in court soon,” she said.

In an unrelated incident, a Kwekwe teenager was allegedly murdered by unknown assailants who then burnt the body with tyres and dumped the remains in a bush.
Ass Insp Mukwende said the body, which is yet to be identified, was discovered by a passer5by last Tuesday.

“I can confirm that we are investigating a murder case where a human body was found burnt beyond recognition in a bush in Kwekwe near Gokwe-Kwekwe road.

“The deceased is estimated to be around 15 years old,” she said. Chronicle

Kaseke Dives Into Politics

Film maker Rufaro Kaseke who recently declared his interest to represent Chitungwiza North constituency as its legislator in the forthcoming harmonised elections became the latest example of artists who are making inroads into ruthless political fray after Energy Mutodi, Bryn Mteki and Hosiah Chipanga among others.

The outspoken Kaseke, popular for his home made videos he posted on social media attacking the Zanu PF during the reign of former president Robert Mugabe, confirmed the development to this publication.

“It’s very true. I will stand as an independent candidate for Chitungwiza North constituency. I was motivated by the need to bring fresh thinking into public administration space,” Kaseke said.
“Balancing politics and arts is easy. An artist is who I will always be and running for public office is me giving myself to work for the country.”

Unlike Kaseke, traditional musician and internationally acclaimed sculptor Bryn Mteki aka Sekuru Tau has declared his interests to contest the presidential seat in the forthcoming general elections.
Seukuru Tau told the Daily News on Sunday that unlike other candidates, he is not going to campaign rigorously.

“People know Sekuru Tau as a progressive person hence there is no need for me to launch an aggressive campaign.

“I urge people to just go to the ballot and vote for me and I will deliver, that’s all I can say,” Mteki said.

Mteki is currently into studio working with businessman-cum-politician Philip Chiyangwa on the song to be titled Ndinongovhaira.

“I have been business friends with Chiyangwa back then when I was in America on the level of entrepreneurship, so our relationship dates way back as we both share the same passion of looking for cash.

“I always look outside the box as I am christened the world renowned artiste I should show it, hence coming with this surprise packed album the song theme is also in line with celebrating life as successful people so Chiyangwa and I we are.

“Chiyangwa and I,we are both successful businessmen, property tycoons and we both have a vast interest in creating billion-dollar business empire. We met in the business circles and our relationship grew both as friends and business colleges as he had always appreciated my sculpture and music before I became a business man,” Mteki said.

Musician, academic and businessman Mutodi is also reportedly eyeing a constituency in Goromonzi under the ticket of Zanu PF in the forthcoming harmonised elections.

The flamboyant musician known for musical albums such as Simbi YaM’dhara (Real Sounds of Africa), Kumasese (Real Sounds of Africa), Sekawo Mbichana, Magetsi Ngaabake, Kuita Kuri Kwenyu, Chimvuramabwe, Ndinorota Landlord, Chidhedhedhe, Ndiri Munzira Kuuya and Ndinokutendai among others is currently studying a PhD in Business Administration at the University of Cape Town and a Bachelor of Laws Degree at the University of Zimbabwe concurrently.

Controversial sungura musician — Hosiah Chipanga who is based in Mutare — told Daily News that he was forced to join politics due to former president Mugabe’s maladministration.

“I never wanted to be a politician but as I yearn for a meeting with Mugabe, I was forced to form my own political party — The Kingdom of God On Earth: Devine Rule On Earth — considering that politics is the only language our leadership understand, not music or gospel — I have tried it before and it doesn’t work,” he said.

However, some of the artistes only use their music to pursue a certain political agenda without directly declaring their interests in it.

In Zimbabwe it came as a shock that a musician who uses music to pursue a political agenda will ruin their musical career eventually.

Musical careers of talented musicians such as the late Simon “Chopper” Chimbetu, the late Andy Brown, Sani Makhalima and Nonsikelelo plummeted after they became more directly linked to the Zanu PF party.

In a previous interviews with this publication, arts critic Cont Mhlanga advised artistes to be careful when venturing into politics.

“Whenever musicians take sides it means they have divided their fan base into two or three.
“Once musicians aligned themselves to a political party it means they should only hold concerts in areas where that particular political party has strong support.

He urges musicians to tackle socio-political themes which affect everybody in society and he gave the example of the late Biggie Tembo of the Bundu Boys.

“The Bundu Boys had a large fan base as the group tackled social politics which affect virtually everybody in the community,” he said.

Musical groups such as Mbare Chimurenga Choir failed to hold concerts outside Zanu PF political gatherings over the years due to the nature of their lyrics. Daily News

Mnangagwa Killed No One – Charamba

Presidential spokesperson, George Charamba has sprung to the defence of his boss President Emmerson Mnangagwa saying he had no hand in the Gukurahundi massacres, which killed more than 20 000 civilians in Midlands and Matabeleland provinces in the 1980s.

Charamba, in an opinion piece published in the Sunday Mail, shifted all blame on former President Robert Mugabe, saying Mnangagwa was then “just a ministerial minion”.

“We scapegoat wantonly as if we have not seen the inside of a management school. Just check how the whole debate on disturbances that rocked our country soon after independence has unfolded. You would think this country had no leader, no executive Prime Minister, no Commander-in-Chief for the duration of the disturbances,” he wrote.

Mugabe was the Commander in Chief at the time the government deployed its Korean-trained Fifth brigade to the Midlands and Matabeleland provinces to crush perceived PF-Zapu dissidents.

The massacres have, however, returned to haunt Mnangagwa, who at the time was in charge of State security, as he was largely seen as the face of the killings.

However, Charamba said his boss was just a minor at the time and his rule should only be measured from November last year when he took over the reins of power.

“And if minors can become majors for our convenience, then why talk about usurpation of power this last November when infact your arguments impliedly make ED the principal right from Zimbabwe’s creation day?” Charamba asked.

Defending Mnangagwa’s 100 days in office, which have been slammed by opposition and critics as a high-sounding nothing, Charamba said it was unfair to judge his boss, who is trying to right the wrongs made by Mugabe over 37 years, in just three months.

“It does not make sense to make ED the fall guy for problems of an era which he was not the patriarch. Until November last year when ED became President, this country had a President and a leader. A patriarch occupying the highest pedestal in the pantheon of Rome’s ancestors.

“Does it really make sense to load ED’s first 100 days with the cure, or expectations of it, for alleged failings of a dispensation in which he was a ministerial minion?
“Does the notion delegated authority mean anything to this who debate, Does the notion of responsibility mean anything at all in this whole debate,” questioned Charamba?
Pulling no punches, Charamba goes after the G40, which appears to be on the comeback through the recently launched National Patriotic Front (NPF), saying what appeared as succession fights in Zanu PF was nothing but a contest between good (ED) and bad (G40)

“That this firebrand rhetoric had become a smokescreen of primitive accumulation by a few, while duping the youths through empty promises of indigenisation and empowerment for which there is absolutely nothing to show on the ground as I write,” Charamba wrote.

MDC-T youth leader Happymore Chidziva, however, was quick to say, Mnangagwa had for long been the power behind Mugabe, the chief adviser, and should, therefore, take blame together with his former boss.

“It makes no sense for one to try and disassociate themselves with the past mistakes made by a person they campaigned for, benefited from his stay in power and defended day and night in parliament and outside. They are an extension of his rule, but specifically Mnangagwa is Mugabe’s rule, the shadow behind and he should acknowledge his role, he is not clean,” Chidziva said.Newsday

War Vets To Campaign For Mnangagwa

War veterans, ex-detainees and war collaborators have said they will be spearheading Zanu-PF’s election campaign as they aim for a resounding victory for the ruling party in this year’s elections.

Speaking during a meeting in Gwanda last week, Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association secretary general, Cde Victor Matemadanda, said war veterans should safeguard the gains of the liberation struggle.
“As the veterans of the liberation struggle we have a mandate to spearhead the election campaign of the ruling party. Everyone in office today was elected through a campaign by the veterans.

“We have to defend the legacy of Zimbabwe which we fought for leading to the 1980 independence.” he said.

Cde Matemadanda urged war veterans to ensure that opposition parties do not win any election.

He said they should campaign in a peaceful manner for the party and Zanu-PF’s presidential candidate Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa. “When you campaigned in 1980 for our independence, this is the same as we have to campaign peacefully for the party and the presidential candidate. Don’t victimise the people, engage with them and lead the party in a right direction. Vehicles are there to be used district by district,” said Cde Matemadanda.

He reiterated that Zanu-PF was not tribally driven like the MDC-T where Mr Nelson Chamisa and Dr Thokozani Khupe are engaged in a power struggle.

“Everyone can see that constitutionally Khupe is the rightful candidate. A brave woman Khupe who went to bury Tsvangirai (late Morgan) in Buhera and what do they say, they call her a dissident. If we don’t defend this kind of person then we are not principled. They will sing about democracy. How democratic is Chamisa who was hand-picked?” Cde Matemadanda said.
“Some are saying there should be a Shonaland, a Ndebeleland, what is that. It can’t.”
Zanu-PF Matabeleland South province chairman Cde Rabelani Choeni said the party’s members should work together and lead the party to a resounding victory. Chronicle

Welshman Says Khuphe Must Back Off, Chamisa Was Endorsed by God “Up In Heaven”

Welshman Ncube

By Paul Nyathi| MDC leader professor Welshman Ncube says that insubordinate MDC-T Vice President Thokozani Khuphe has to back off on her claim to the leadership of the MDC-T as Nelson Chamisa was endorsed four times as the leader of the party and the fourth time being an endorsement by God in heaven.

Addressing a disappointingly low crowd of under two thousand people in a rainy Plumtree town on Sunday, Ncube said that there is no going back on Chamisa as he is the confirmed next leader of Zimbabwe.

“Before Morgan Tsvangirai left for South Africa on the 6th of January, he summoned me and told me that he felt he was not winning on the cancer and was leaving Chamisa to take over from him, that was the first endorsement,” said Ncube.

“Secondly, the MDC-T National Council which is the biggest decision making body between the five year congresses endorsed Chamisa as the leader and that is the most important endorsement.”

“For the third time, he was endorsed by us the other six principals to the MDC Alliance to be our leader and presidential candidate.”

“You know that in our culture and beliefs these rains that you see here are also an endorsement from the God in heaven and our ancestors of this young man as our leader,” said Ncube.

“With all these endorsements you still hear people claiming that Chamisa was unconstitutionally made the MDC-T leader, such people must just back off,” said Ncube amidst a loud cheer from the crowd that braved the rains to listen to their party leaders speak.

Khuphe has openly defied Chamisa as the leader of the MDC-T claiming that she is three genuine leader as she is the only one who was elected by party congress in 2014.

She has been challenging Chamisa to go to congress and be elected than be endorsed outside congress as per the party constitution.

BLUE ROOF RUMOUR: AUDIO- Khupe’s Expose’ Of “Naked Falsehoods” Against Her

By Staff Reporter | Under fire MDC-T Vice President Thokozani Khupe has dismissed media reports that she met former President Robert Mugabe after he was last November ousted from power.

A South African publication The Sunday Times wrote on Sunday claiming that Mugabe called Khupe to his Blue Roof residence to discuss a VP position offer in a new political outfit to be set up.

It was further alleged that Mugabe put Jonathan Moyo on the phone too as they sought to find a common ground.

Mugabe is then reported to have dispatched emissaries to speak with Khupe in South Africa during the so-called Coalition workshop in February this year.

However, ZimEye.com has exclusive details on the so called Mugabe meeting with Khupe’s senior aide, Witness Dube responding in detail saying it is not true. He provides a list of other allegations that have in the past been leveled against Khupe, including that she is forming a coalition with former VP Joice Mujuru, and also another one which says that she is receiving funding from the American Rev. Nyagura Denies Prof.Madhuku Top UZ Post

University of Zimbabwe law lecturer Professor Lovemore Madhuku’s bid to lead the institution’s Faculty of Law as dean flopped after he flunked an interview conducted by a panel headed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Levi Nyagura.

The university advertised the post of dean to replace Mr Emmanuel Magade whose term had expired.

The post was landed by another law lecturer, Dr Innocent Maga.

Registrar of University of Zimbabwe Dr Noel Mutongoreni advised Prof Madhuku last week that he had failed to make the grade.

“Thank you for your application for the post of Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Zimbabwe received on 24 November 2017. I regret to inform you that your application was not successful. May I take this opportunity to wish you success in your future endeavours,” said Dr Mutongoreni in a letter dated March 7.

In the advertisement, the university said it was looking for a person with an earned doctorate, scholar of note with credibility among other academic peers; one who would offer academic leadership and a scholar with ability to plan effectively and inspire and motivate staff in the faculty.

Dr Maja confirmed that he had been appointed as the new dean and described his appointment as an opportunity to transform the faculty.

He, however, said Prof Madhuku remained a top academic.

“Prof Madhuku is our luminary because of his academic achievement. We will continue to require his services,” said Dr Maja.

When contacted, Prof Madhuku confirmed the development, which he said was surprising.

“Yes, it is true that I applied for the post. I attended an interview on 28 February 2018. It is also true that I have been advised by the Registrar that I was not successful. I was surprised, but not disappointed. I have been with the UZ for 23 years and thought it was now time for me not only to teach and research, but also to provide academic leadership,” said Prof Madhuku.

He said what surprised him was that he was the only full professor in the Faculty of Law who is below the age of 65.

“I was encouraged by many both in the university and in the legal fraternity, who read the advertisement and rightly reasoned that since the new thrust was for professors to lead faculties, it would have been remiss for me not to apply.

“The idea was to be dean for a short time to inspire and groom young scholars to attain professorship and take over academic leadership. This is what surprised me because I am the only full professor below 65 years in the Faculty of Law,” he said.

Prof Madhuku holds a first class Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree from UZ, a first class Master of Laws and Doctor of Philosophy from University of Cambridge in England.

He has been a full professor of law since 2011.- state media

Obert Mpofu Threatens To Arrest Mthwakazi Activists

By Dorrothy Moyo| Controversial Minister Of Affairs And Culture, Obert Mpofu has threatened Mthwakazi activists with arrest.

The activists have been protesting for several days since the moment when they were blocked from conducting the Ndebele King crowning ceremony, a development that saw hundreds of thousands of people reacting against the Zimbabwean government.

Further to that, they have been accused of disrupting the national peace and reconciliation commission hearings

Minister Mpofu has since threatened to arrest the activists.

Mpofu told the state media the state will not tolerate any disruptions of its programmes. He said, “We want to caution them against disrupting Government programmes.

“All organisations, institutions and other groupings should desist from interfering with scheduled Government programmes and other programmes organised by other institutions as has been the case with the disruptions of NPRC hearings by some elements that are bent on destabilising Government.

“Government will no longer tolerate any disruptions and those who disrupt its programmes will be dealt with in terms of the laws of the country.”

“This comes following reports by members of the public who have raised concern that they have not been allowed to make their contributions on national programmes because of some people who have disrupted meetings.

“That will no longer be tolerated and the police are now going to arrest them.”

Mushroom Poisoning Victims Still Hospitalised

Three children from a Filabusi family which has so far lost four of its members due to mushroom poisoning are still admitted at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo, with one aged four said to be in critical condition.

Seven children and their grandmother, who is still admitted at Filabusi District Hospital, ate poisonous mushrooms last Saturday at home and only sought medical attention on Monday.

One child died at Filabusi District hospital on Tuesday and three others died at Mpilo, one on Wednesday and the other two on Thursday.

Three other children remain in hospital and one of them is critical.Mpilo clinical director Dr Solwayo Ngwenya said the two boys aged seven and 10 were stable, but a four-year-old girl was critical.

“We thank God because today we did not witness any deaths due to mushroom poisoning. We are still monitoring the two boys though the little girl is still critical in the intensive care unit,” said Dr Ngwenya.

He said members of the public should not eat wild mushrooms. The death toll of people who have lost their lives after consuming the deadly fungus stands at 15. Eight Filabusi family members ate the poisonous mushrooms on Saturday, leading to the deaths of four of them.

Eleven members of a Mberengwa family who consumed the toxic mushrooms last week, also died.

On Thursday, Insiza District Medical Officer Dr Mandlenkosi Nkala said the Filabusi family was rushed to Filabusi District Hospital on Monday evening after consuming the poisonous mushrooms on Saturday.

“The children’s ages range between three and 10 years and they stay with their grandmother. They say the incident took place on Saturday evening. One child, a girl who is in Grade Seven, is the one who picked the mushrooms and brought them home for granny to cook,” said Dr Nkala. – state media

Zhuwao Brief Reloaded Article 09 (ZBR09)

Dear Patriots, Comrades and Friends

By Hon. Patrick Zhuwao on 11th March 2018| Dear Patriots, Comrades and Friends, I hope I find you well as I bring to you this instalment of the ZBR exactly a month after the last one. It is with profound regret that I have not been
able to share with you the ZBR instalments, which I owe you, for the past four weeks. This is because I have been overwhelmed beyond description by urgent and very important issues on the ground. Nonetheless, I have found it necessary to take a break from my pre-occupation with ground issues to communicate with you crucial information about the historic and very
exciting launch of NPF. I have no doubt that everyone of you is as excited as I am about this development which has left the coup conspirators and terrorist junta in sixes and sevens.

Allow me therefore firstly to congratulate Comrade Retired Brigadier General Ambrose Mutinhiri for bravely resigning from both the now junta-controlled ZANU PF and junta controlled Parliament in protest against the bloody military coup of 15th November 2017 and against the subsequent formation of an illegitimate coup government. This is, by any measure, the most heroic statement by a comrade in the struggle. It is an exemplary discharge of the much-needed leadership through action and not just words. Cde Mutinhiri’s courageous and audacious leadership has given hope to patriots, comrades and friends who have been deeply affected by the coup and who need to be assisted one way or another, whether they were expelled from ZANU PF or remain ensconced within ZANU PF or ordinary people who were collateral victims of the military coup.

In the same vein, I wish to also congratulate Comrade Mutinhiri and others that he has been working with for founding and establishing NPF. I am particularly pleased that Comrade Mutinhiri has taken on the onerous leadership responsibility of NPF as its founding President and Presidential Candidate in the forthcoming “do or die” general elections against the terrorist junta. I am sure all progressive forces feel, like I do, that Comrade Mutinhiri and his team deserve everyone’s full and undivided support. He definitely has my support, 100%! As we prepare for the 2018 general elections, we must remember that time is not our side and so we must act now and act decisively with a common and united purpose. This is not the time for trivia or selfish pursuit. Iwe neni tine basa, Umsebenzi loUmkhulu.

The successful launch of NPF has created palpable excitement within the entirety of
Zimbabwe’s body politic. The coup conspirators and terrorist junta have been terrified
beyond measure. As a result, the illegal and illegitimate regime in Harare has ratcheted up its
terrorist activities through making direct attacks such as the hate speech that was targeted at
President Mugabe in Harare on Wednesday as slogans were being chanted calling for his
death at the Junta’s ZANU PF Youth Assembly meeting. Intimidation has become the order
of the day with all the workers at President Mugabe’s Blue Roof Residence being kidnapped,
illegally detained, interrogated and tortured for three consecutive days this past week at the
instigation of former Midlands ZANU PF Central Committee Member, Douglas Tapfuma,
who is now Principal Director of State Residences and Occasions at Zimbabwe House.

Indirect attacks and efforts at infiltrating and destabilising NPF are being intensified but with
little success. By way of an example, the junta circulated a fake list, using a false NPF logo,
naming an alleged top hierarchy of NPF. Whilst most members of NPF dismissed these
infantile efforts of the junta to destabilise NPF, some have fallen for the trick by believing the
lies and acting on their basis.

I therefore feel some responsibility and obligation, based on what I know to be true, to
articulate five key principles that guide the leadership structures of NPF. It is imperative that
everyone should categorically know these five founding principles guiding the leadership
structure of NPF as agreed to by the founders of NPF, whose identities will remain
confidential for the meantime.

Firstly, President Robert Gabriel Mugabe cannot and will not be among the leaders and
founders of NPF. However, every effort will be made to secure his goodwill by ensuring that
NPF is honest and true to the ideals and values of the armed liberation struggle that ushered
in Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980. NPF will also seek to secure President Mugabe’s
goodwill by restoring, maintaining and promoting the enduring legacy of his postindependence
leadership which include, but is not limited, to vast gains in social services
such as health and education, as well as the empowerment delivered by the landmark policies
of land reform, indigenisation and economic empowerment, as well as women, youth and
community empowerment.

Secondly, and similarly, Amai Dr Grace Mugabe cannot and will not be part of the founding
leadership or hierarchy of NPF. Nonetheless, her goodwill and support will be sought by
NPF. This is a necessary imperative especially considering her publicly known initiatives in
support of women and youth.

Thirdly, the comrades who were exiled by the coup and are generally linked with the G40
concept, notably Honourable Saviour Kasukuwere, Professor Jonathan Moyo and Honourable
Patrick Zhuwao, cannot and will not be in the founding leadership of NPF.

The fourth founding principle guiding the leadership structure of NPF requires that the
leadership is drawn from the full spectrum of Zimbabwe’s political divide with a legitimate
generational mix that brings together, on the one hand, the background of liberation struggle
and post-independence; as well as national government service, and on the other hand,
generational renewal through involvement of the youth.

The fifth principle is that a deliberate and sustained effort must be done by NPF to identify all
those who were affected by the military coup, in one way or another, directly or indirectly, to
ensure that appropriate redress is done on a case by case basis.

And so, Patriots, Comrades and Friends, the #2018Resistance has reached a critical stage
with the launch of NPF. As such, whatever we do, please we should make sure that, as a rule,
we do not rely on rumours about anything or anyone. Trust but verify. Should there be
anything at all that you wish to clarify, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me on
Twitter or Facebook as Patrick Zhuwao, on email [email protected] and on
WhatsApp number +263-73-343-6169. I hope that you find this useful.

Iwe neni tine basa. Umsebenzi loUmkhulu.

Under Attack Mugabe The New State Media Villain

Former President Robert Mugabe has fallen from Grace. During his 37 years as leader, Mugabe enjoyed unparalleled and unquestioned state media attention, all in the past now. The state media has not only dropped the cde prefix before Mugabe’s name, the state broadsheets are on an overdrive nitpicking on every move the former man makes. Intensified propaganda after Mugabe came out to openly back the formation of the New Patriotic Front led by former minister Ambrose Mutinhiri. Mugabe is now treated like any other opposition leader attacked and vilified.

FULL TEXT : Zimbabweans from all walks of life have roundly condemned former President Robert Mugabe following startling revelations that he is demanding his pension lump sum in cash after years of getting his salary using the same arrangement.

According to documents in possession of our sister paper, The Sunday Mail, the former President is demanding his pension lump sum of nearly half-a-million dollars and monthly pension pay out of over $13 000 in cash.

The documents also reveal that Mr Mugabe had been getting monthly cash payments of $20 000 while still Head of State and Government, even as ordinary Zimbabweans queued for days on end to access amounts as low as $20 from banks.

It has also been established that former First Lady Mrs Grace Mugabe is also getting a monthly payment of $2 170 from the State.

Police were unleashed on those who spoke out at bank queues as Mr Mugabe and his wife sat pretty, getting cash.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who took over from Mr Mugabe, was left bemused by the arrangement, saying it was highly irregular and irresponsible and opted to have his salary paid through a bank transfer.

The Chronicle yesterday took to the streets and spoke to ordinary residents, politicians and lawyers in Bulawayo over the issue.

A Bulawayo constitutional lawyer, Mr Dumisani Dube, said Mr Mugabe’s demands were a violation of anti-money laundering laws.

College Head In Open Zip Manhood Scare

NATIONAL NEWS

Esigodini Agricultural College principal Mr Bernard Sibanda is under fire for allegedly sexually harassing his female subordinates by exposing his manhood and touching their private parts.

The college principal’s alleged actions saw him being fired by the Ministry of Lands Agriculture and Rural Resettlement on charges of misconduct following a disciplinary hearing.

However, Mr Sibanda (61) got a temporary relief after the Labour Court ordered the Ministry to conduct a fresh disciplinary hearing within a month and a half.

Mr Sibanda is alleged to have sexually harassed female agricultural extension workers and students by asking them to expose their busts for him to see and touching their private parts as well as hugging them.

He was also accused of exposing his manhood to the women by opening the zip of his trousers.

In papers before the court, Mr Sibanda is the appellant while the Minister of Lands, Agriculture and Rural Resettlement Retired Chief Air Marshal Perrance Shiri was cited as the respondent.

Bulawayo Labour Court judge Justice Mercy Moya-Matshanga set aside the dismissal following Mr Sibanda’s application challenging his sacking.

The judge ordered the Ministry of Lands Agriculture and Rural Resettlement to conduct a fresh disciplinary hearing within a month and a half as Mr Sibanda was denied legal representation.

She said the denial of legal representation infringes on a constitutional fundamental right and renders any hearing a nullity.

“The application for review succeeds and is hereby granted and the decision of the disciplinary hearing committee be and is hereby set aside. The employer is ordered to conduct a disciplinary hearing within a month and a half after the issuance of this order and to properly conduct the disciplinary proceedings,” ruled Justice Moya-Matshanga.

In his grounds of appeal, Mr Sibanda through his lawyers, Masiye-Moyo and Associates, argued that he was denied his right to legal representation after the respondent refused to postpone the disciplinary hearing when his lawyer, the late Mr Galen Moyo Masiye, was seriously ill and admitted in hospital after undergoing an operation.

“The applicant was accordingly denied the right to hear, counter and test the witnesses’ evidence. Applicant seeks the relief that the outcome of the disciplinary hearing be set aside and that he be reinstated or be paid damages in lieu thereof,” said Mr Sibanda’s lawyers.

According to court papers, Mr Sibanda, who was employed as a principal at Esigodini Agricultural College, allegedly sexually harassed female agricultural extension workers by asking to have sexual intercourse with them.

Mr Sibanda is also alleged to have further abused his office by demanding sexual favours from prospective students seeking to secure places to study at the institution.

He allegedly threatened the complainants that he would not recommend manpower development leave for those who would not have complied with his sexual advances. Following the allegations, Mr Sibanda was charged with misconduct.

He was later arraigned before a disciplinary hearing committee. However, at the time of the disciplinary hearing, Mr Moyo was ill and could not attend the hearing proceedings.

The Ministry of Lands Agriculture and Rural Resettlement continued with the hearing and called witnesses and later convicted and dismissed Mr Sibanda.

In 2014, Gwanda magistrate Ms Sheila Nazombe acquitted Mr Sibanda of charges of indecently assaulting a female extension officer based in Simbumbumbu area in Gwanda district. He was accused of fondling the complainant’s breasts. – State Media

Headmaster Bans Singing Of Shona Songs In School

The headmaster of Magwegwe High School in Bulawayo is under fire after allegedly banning the singing of Shona songs at his school.

Mr William Ncube is alleged to have banned pupils from singing Shona songs or war cries during sports events or at assembly.

Bulawayo Acting Provincial Education Director Mrs Olicah Khaira said the Ministry of Primary and secondary Education was investigating the matter.

“I cannot comment much on the matter as I am not in the office. However, investigations into the issue are underway,” she said.
An open letter, purportedly written by pupils at the school, has gone viral on social media platforms.

The pupils are requesting Mr Ncube to desist from fanning tribalism and are demanding equal treatment at the school.

The Chronicle visited the school yesterday and spoke to members of staff. The headmaster was said to be away.

“On behalf of the Magwegwe High School students, we are against the decision by our headmaster to bar the singing of Shona songs at our school. As students we say no to tribalism and any form of violence. Whatever happened in the past must not include us as the so called born frees. We will not be used to settle past differences. We cannot be used in conflicts or fighting each other. We believe in unity and nothing else,” reads part of the letter.

The letter says the headmaster is quoted as having said he will be in trouble with the PED if pupils were allowed to sing Shona songs.state media

Goreraza Goes After Makandiwa

Stanley Goreraza | There has never been a genuine Prophet or a genuine man of God who became rich doing Gods work. Gods work is sacred and is not rewarded by donations from men and the treasures of this world which end at death.

Gods work promotes righteousness and not prosperity. God admonishes righteousness even in the absence of prosperity.

Righteousness is prosperity of the heart. It is happiness in times of sadness, joy even in pain, everything when there is nothing, satisfaction in hunger and thirst.

Material prosperity is an attempt to satisfy greed and the gospel of material prosperity is an ungodly attempt at justifying greed and love for the pleasures and luxuries of this world.

To prosper is to triumph over evil, to reject and resist sin and temptation. It is not acquiring and gathering possessions. Temptation includes the riches of this world in which you will find many deadly sins which have corrupted the world and men resulting in wars, strife, hatred and lies.

Anyone who teaches men that God wants you to be rich is a liar. But the one who teaches that God requires righteousness is a man from God.
Man is poor when it comes to truth, mercy, forgiveness, charity, kindness and wisdom but these are riches to God. Man is wealthy when it comes to possessions but this is nothing to God. The riches of this world are poverty to God but virtues and righteousness in which man is poor is great wealth to God.

It is not riches that will give you life without end but righteousness and good deeds.

Never has there been a righteous man who died and was sent to hell. But many who died rich were denied heaven and sent to hell.

God bless you all.

Soldier Dies For Beer

A soldier based at 5 Infantry Battalion in Kwekwe died on Monday evening after he was head-butted by a colleague when a beer brawl turned nasty.

Onias Moyo (26) was rushed to Kwekwe District Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon admission after he was head-butted by a workmate Bruce Dungeni while they were drinking at Linda Bar in Mbizo 4. Dungeni is reportedly employed by Airforce of Zimbabwe.

Acting Midlands provincial police spokesperson Ethel Mkwende said she was yet to get the report.

Zimbabwe National Army public relations officer Lieutenant-Colonel Alphios Makotore confirmed the incident but declined to comment saying doing so might jeopardise police investigations.

“I can only confirm that the culprits have been apprehended and are assisting police with investigations. I cannot comment further than that since doing so would be prejudicial,” he said.

However, a witness said the two, Moyo and Dungeni were drinking beer at Linda Bar when the dispute arose.

“The two had been drinking together since morning in the company of their friends. They, however, had a misunderstanding around 8pm over who would buy the next round,” said the witness. .

The source said while the two were exchanging blows, a friend Steven Samuel who had been drinking with the two for the better part of the day, tried to restrain them to no avail.

“The moment Samuel let Moyo free, Dungeni head-butted the now deceased on the face and he started bleeding profusely from the mouth and nose,” said the witness.

A police report was made and Moyo was rushed to Kwekwe District Hospital where he was pronounced dead on admission.

Dungeni and Samuel were reportedly picked up by police and are in police custody assisting with investigations.- state media

ZANU PF Villagers Demand For Mugabe

The Robert Mugabe aligned New Patriotic Front party, makes a report that it has got grassroots rural support. The report says the villagers are making a diamond for the 94 year old former head of state . Below is a tweet released on Sunday to the effect:

Nelson Chamisa Revealed

Dr Tapiwa Mashakada |Nelson Chamisa is one of the surviving founder members of MDC. He launched his illustrous political career as a Zimbabwe National Student Union leader in the 1990s. In 1998 he attended the National Working Peoples’s Convention held at the Women’s Bureau in Hillside Harare. The Convention layed the foundations for the formation of a “broad based movement for democratic change”. I was priviledged to prepare a paper for Delegates on “Labour and the Economy”. Chamisa was in the thick of things when we formed the MDC. He criss crossed the whole country with the likes of Tendai Biti, Paurina Mpariwa, Remus Makuvaza, Nicholas Mudzengere, Mlambeni, Job Sikhala, Learnmore Jongwe, Tafadzwa Musekiwa, Dr Mudzingwa, Elliot Pfebve, Grace Kwinjeh, James Makore, Gift Chimanikire and many others too numerous to mention. These leaders were deployed across the country to form interim MDC structures. I was deployed in Harare with the likes of Cephas Makuyana, Murai, Machingauta Machingauta, Kwirinjeh, Jambani Gombera, Karimatsenga, Vilika, Munyanyi, Mai Dandajena, Ms Muguti, Mutambu, Mbuya Mazanhi, Nyoka, Mujuru and others. At the inaugural MDC Congress in 2000 at the Acquatic Centre, Chamisa was elected the first MDC Youth Chairman. He outclassed Musundure. He was then elected into the first MDC National Executive. Chamisa also held the positions of National Organizing Secretary, Information and Publicity and National Standing Committee member. Chamisa has fought for freedom, democracy and human rights in Zimbabwe. He has beeen a consistent, dedicated and principled MDC cadre. He was one of Morgan Tsvangirai’s trusted lieutenants since the formation of MDC. No wonder why he deservingly was appointed Vice President in 2017. A hard working and diligent person Chamisa became ICT Minister during the inclusive government. The media judged him “Minister of the Year “twice. Due to his maturity he defended the party on 2 splits. He stayed the course with Morgan Tsvangirai. He never wavered or dithered. His political career was not without its own dangers. He was brutalized by agents of the regime at the Harare International Airport in broad daylight. He was butchered at Machipisa Police Station in Highfiels together with MT, Madhuku, Biti and others. This was during the aborted Save Zimbabwe Rally. Nelson campaigned for the No Vote which succeeded in 2000. He is a fearless leader. One of his exploits include the disruption of the Chidyausiku Constitutional Commission meeting at Girls High in 2000. Chamisa grabbed all the documents from Chief Justice Chidyausiku. The meeting ended prematurely. We were at St Andrews House that evening and Chamisa incited youths to go to Girls High. Chamisa became has been Member of Parliament for Kuwadzana since 2003. His role in Parliament has been legendary. His contributions to oversight and parliamentary democracy is in the public domain. He sits in the Standing Orders and Rules Committee of Parliament. Chamisa is a scholar par excellence. He holds a Higher Diploma in Marketing (IMM) , Bsc Political Science honours degree and LLB from the University of Zimbabwe. He also had his academic stint at the prestigous Stanford University in the USA. Nelson Chamisa is an Advocate practising in Zimbabwe. He is a popular leader loved and liked by all and sundry. An icon of the youths. He is a happy man who bears no grudge against anybody. The party elevated him to the position of President of MDC and Presidential Candidate having considered his credentials and illustrous career in MDC. However he now has a got a duty to unite the party and lead the MDC Alliance into victory in the July/August elections. I appeal to the MDC family to stop bickering and focus at the bigger picture. Chamisa will fulfil the Vision and Dream of Morgan Tsvangirai and deliver a New Zimbabwe. He is a young but mature and dynamic leader. He represents the new generation of leaders such as Macron of France, Barack Obama of USA and many other emerging leaders of world democracies. Chamisa is respected by business, Labour, Churches, Women and Youth Groups, Civil society, Traditional Leaders. He is reknowned internationally and regionally. He is our best foot forward.

Consult Mugabe For Political Advice, Research Expert Urges Chamisa

Terrence Mawawa

A research expert has urged MDC Alliance leader and MDC president Nelson Chamisa to consult veteran politician Robert Mugabe for advice on how to defeat Zanu PF.

“I am appealing to the President of the MDC
Alliance Nelson Chamisa to lead his team to the
Blue Roof and meet the father of the nation.

R.G
Mugabe should be willing to give them a lecture on
how they should stop the alleged rigging of the 2018
elections. I have a feeling that the rigging strategies
will be exposed anytime from now. Let us wait and
see.

The R.G Mugabe coup against ED is inevitable
because the military set a bad example.

Power
is not grabbed but it is given by the people.

Mugabe
is likely to lead a successful underground rebellion
against ED and I can see criminal elements around
ED being removed by Nelson Chamisa in the July 2018
presidential election,”said
Don Chigumba, a mixed methods research
specialist based in South Africa.

MDC Reminds Mnangagwa Of 2008 Brutalities

Terrence Mawawa, Masvingo

The MDC Welfare Department is prepared to furnish President Emmerson Mnangagwa with a detailed report of the brutal acts of political violence perpetrated by Zanu PF members in 2008.

Mnangagwa riled opposition parties and pressure groups when he claimed he was oblivious of the atrocious acts.

According to the MDC Welfare Department, hundreds of the opposition party’ s supporters were killed ahead of the 2008 Presidential Election Runoff that was controversially won by Robert Mugabe.

“We have a comprehensive list of party members who were murdered by the ruling party Zanu (PF) and State Security Agents,” said the department in a statement yesterday.

The department also accused Mnangagwa, Mugabe and the military junta of subverting the will of the people by blocking Morgan Tsvangirai from becoming the country’ s President.

Mnangagwa Aide Blocks Mugabe Comeback

Terrence Mawawa, Masvingo

In a calculated manoeuvre meant to stifle the National Patriotic Front(NPF) project, a senior Zanu PF official has urged party members to stop the expulsion of suspected G-40 elements.

Masvingo Provincial Chairperson, Ezra Chadzamira told party supporters here last week, there was need to forgive perceived G-40 elements for the sake of unity and sanity.

Chadzamira explained that it would be suicidal for the ruling party to expel dissenting members before the crucial plebiscite.

Zanu PF has been shaken by former President Robert Mugabe’s involvement in the formation of a new political front, NPF.

“We cannot continue to expel our members. This has to stop forthwith, given the latest developments,” said Chadzamira.

Tension Mounts As MDC Alliance Candidates Jostle For Seats

According to reports from Chivi two MDC officials, Stephen Mudereri and Boniface Matubvunye are keen to represent the alliance in the House of Assembly plebiscite in Chivi Central Constituency despite the fact that the constituency has been reserved for MDC led by Professor Welshman Ncube.

“Matubvunye and Mudereri have already thrown their hats into the ring so we will wait and see as events unfold,” a member of the MDC Chivi Central District Executive Committee told ZimEye.com yesterday.

Mary Chiwenga Says, “I Dress Just Like Mrs Obama”

President Chiwenga’s wife Mary says she will wear what she wants and does not care what people think.

Mary Chiwenga, Second Lady |“I know people say I like showing my shoulders, that’s me and I will not change. So I always say whether they like it or not, they can’t change who I am and this is me. I dress exactly how I want to dress, I don’t change because people say I must change, no! I change because I feel the change is necessary.

“Michelle Obama dresses like me and people applaud her and appreciate her for that because she is not trying to be someone else. Melania Trump dresses like I dress and everybody loves it, no-one complains,” she said in the interview with the Daily News.

“It’s very myopic for people to say because you are wearing a dress that is sleeveless of whatever design, then they say you are crazy. I don’t pick it up from that context.

“When I leave home like this, my husband loves it. If I wear a short dress, my husband loves it. If I wear jeans depending on where I’m going, my husband loves it. I will never leave home with a dress that my husband doesn’t approve of.

“The outfit that I wore at congress; when I walked out of the bedroom, my husband was like ‘oh my, vamaGumbo, makachena, today I am going to walk holding your hand’. He said it jokingly. And people started saying oh, her boobs were out, we could see her cleavage, whatever. If you got it, flaunt it, why hide it?”

“Well, it’s not my problem that there are women out there who can’t wear that. The reason why people complain is that they know they cannot wear the same things that you are able to wear. I like looking very classy and very sexy, that’s me, and because I have sex appeal, so I don’t change.”

“There is an MP that came here… and we had a small talk and finally she got to her subject about my dressing. She said she had been sent by women from the party to maybe convince me to wear African attires and things like that, but I refused and I said I am not trying to fit into anybody’s league. My husband is happy with the way I dress and it’s not about to change. And you can take that back to them.”

Khupe To Form Own Party? | REPORT

President Mugabe called Thokozani Khupe to Blue Roof as Tsvangirai lay on his death bed. It is understood that he offered MDC Vice President Thokozani Khupe a spot as one of the vice presidents in the outfit that he was planning – now known as New Patriotic Front.

The Sunday Times of South Africa reports that Mugabe called Khupe to his Blue Roof residence to discuss the offer. Our further investigations indicate that Mugabe put Jonathan Moyo on the phone too as they sought to find a common ground.

Mugabe then dispatched emissaries to speak with Khupe in South Africa during the so-called Coalition workshop in February this year. It is unknown whether Khupe agreed to work with Mugabe at the time. What is known is that there were two meetings with Mugabe’s emissaries in South Africa where the modalities of working together was being worked out.

At the time it was becoming apparent that Tsvangirai was not going to survive the cancer. Khupe also had a tentative memorandum with Joice Mujuru to work together in the event that she (Khupe) assumed the presidency of MDC.

Khupe has been vehemently opposed to the MDC Alliance that Tsvangirai forged with Tendai Biti and Welshman Ncube. Under the Alliance agreement, Ncube’s MDC would be allowed to choose the bulk of candidates to contest the parliamentary seats in Matebeleland.

This did not go down well with Khupe who felt that Tsvangirai was sacrifising her on the altar for little benefit. She then boycotted meetings with Tsvangirai for more than a year. By the time Tsvangirai died,  Khupe had snubbed four meeting requests from Tsvangirai to iron out their differences.

A power struggle ensured at Tsvangirai’s death with Khupe, Mudzuri and Chamisa claiming to be the legitimate leaders of MDC. Chamisa then called a National Council meeting that endorsed him as Acting President and 2018 Presidential candidate for MDC.

Khupe has withdrawn to Bulawayo – her percieved stronghold where she is mounting resistance against Chamisa presidency. She is expected to launch a splinter party in the next few days. It is not yet certain if Khupe’s party will join with Mugabe’s New Patriotic Front.

War Over Ndabaningi Sithole’s Farm

A trust for the late Ndabaningi Sithole is seeking a court order declaring the acquisition of the politician’s Chulu Farm illegal, null and void.

This is after it filed a High Court application demanding compensation for the nationalist’s farm, which was compulsorily acquired by government in 1993.

The application comes at a time President Emmerson Mnangagwa has promised his government would compensate former white commercial farmers who lost their land during the country’s bloody land reform programme that took place in the early 2000s.

In the application, yet to be finalised by the High Court, but filed at least two years ago, the Freedom Farm Trust cited Lands minister, (now headed by Perrance Shiri), Local Government minister, (now under July Moyo’s purview), the Harare City Council and the master of the High Court as respondents.

According to court papers, the Trust was formed to hold property including land, houses, investment and all intellectual properties owned by the late Sithole.

“During his lifetime, the late reverend Ndabaningi Sithole owned Subdivision ‘C’ of Subdivision ‘A’ of the farm ‘The Rest’ also known as Chulu Farm in the outskirts of Harare.

“Sometime in 1993, the government of Zimbabwe sought to compulsorily acquire Chulu Farm on the basis that the late . . . Sithole had resettled landless Zimbabwean thereon.

“The compulsory acquisition was done for purposes of donating the land to the ministry of Local Government Rural and Urban Development. This ministry would give the land to the third defendant (Local Government minister),” the court heard.

Following the acquisition of the land, the government issued a notice in October 1993, for people to evacuate Chulu Farm. Since the eviction of the people, the land has been lying idle, the court heard.

“Despite the purported compulsory acquisition of the Chulu Farm by the first and second defendant (Lands and Local Government minister) no compensation was paid to the late reverend Ndabaningi Sithole. A compulsory acquisition of land without payment of compensation is illegal, null and void and is tantamount to theft and robbery.

“The value of compensation for both land and improvements on the land is $140 000 000. Because the late reverend … Sithole was a black indigenous Zimbabwean he is entitled to full compensation for both the land and improvements in terms of the Constitution of Zimbabwe,” the court heard.
The Trust is now seeking an order for the acquisition of the farm to be declared illegal, null and void and be declared property of the estate late Sithole.

In its response to the summons, however, the Lands ministry has said the acquisition of the farm was lawful and remains valid.

“Plaintiff’s compensation figure of $140 million is not supported by any quantified assessment.
“It is a thump suck figure which cannot be accepted by defendant or the court. Second defendant’s valuers will provide a properly assessed compensation figure.

“It is not true that the farm is lying idle. Plaintiff would have saved itself costs by engaging first and second defendants for a settlement first before approaching the courts,” the court was told.
The matter is still to be determined by the High Court. Daily News

Another Blow For Khupe

By Lionel Saungweme | In a major political setback for embattled Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) Vice President, Thokozani Khupe, the MDC-T Matabeleland North Provincial Administration Committee (PAC) has been dissolved. Thirteen District committees, which make up the Matabeleland North Provincial Executive and Committee met, at Cross Dete near Hwange, yesterday and dissolved PAC. The move by the districts renders Khupe weak in a province she boasted as her own.

Article 6.9.1.9 of the MDC-T Constitution states that “there shall be a Provincial Administrative Committee of the Province which shall be Chaired by the Chairperson of the Province and whose other members shall be;
(a) The Deputy Chairperson
(b) The Provincial Secretary and Deputy Secretary
(c) The Provincial Treasurer
(d) The Organising Secretary and Deputy Organising Secretary
(e) The Secretary for Information and Publicity
(f) The Secretary for Elections
(g) Chairperson and Secretary of the Provincial Assembly of Women
(h) The Chairperson and Secretary of the Assembly of Youth.”

The same article further states that “the Provincial Administrative Committee shall be responsible for the day to administration of the Province and shall report to the Provincial Executive and shall have no right to make any policy or executive decision.”

The PAC is therefore a strategic committee, which before its dissolution was comprised mostly by members who are loyal to Khupe. Known hardcore Khupe loyalists such as Hon Lwazi Sibanda and Betty Thwala were among the affected.

“MDC-T is now being labelled a violent party. Our PAC members are always involved in the violent skirmishes in Bulawayo,” said Matabeleland North Provincial Secretary, Mxolisi Ndlovu.

“Our members in this province have been implicated several times in violent disturbances. They destabilise Bulawayo Province for the benefit of Khupe. That behaviour, which tarnishes the image of the party must come to an end,” said Ndlovu.

Intra party clashes broke out in Bulawayo between supporters of Hon Chamisa and Khupe on 4 March 2018. Twelve party members, including the MDC-T Bulawayo Provincial Chairman, Gift Banda, were arrested and charged with public violence in a case that has come to be known as the MDC-T Dozen. The public including Western diplomats have condemned the violence, which has prompted the Bulawayo MDC-T Provincial Executive and Committee to issue an apology to party supporters.

“In addition, if you examine the members comprising the thirteen districts, you will realise that about 98% of the members are Ndebele. So Khupe cannot now raise her tribal arguments because her puppets have been booted out by real Ndebele people,” said Ndlovu.

Relationships have soured since the death of MDC-T President Morgan Tsvangirai on Valentine’s Day. Khupe has been given acres of space by the state media to attack MDC-T Acting President Nelson Chamisa. In one interview with The Herald Khupe stated “Tsvangirai dies and you go on with a meeting to appoint yourself as leader. How shameful!”

With the breakdown in relationship, Khupe has been holding meetings in Matabeleland North province. She has been rallying women in what is suspected to be either a bhora musango (electoral sabotage) or preps for the formation of a new political party.

The dissolution of PAC should therefore come across as Khupe’s waterloo as her foot soldiers have effectively been stripped of authority. The ramifications are that Khupe can no longer legitimately reach out to MDC-T structures in the province without breaching protocol.

At a rally held in Nkayi on Friday 9 March 2018, Khupe hinted that she will not allow the PAC to be dissolved. However, yesterday’s meeting by the 13 districts out rightly defied her.
“We have come to this situation because people tell lies about VP Khupe. They are saying bad things about her to tarnish her politically. She is a good person,” said Hon Lwazi Sibanda.

Politics Will Lead The Gun – Mutinhiri

Ambrose Mutinhiri | What is G40? The theory or assumption that the so-called G40 members make up the core of NPF is just a spin. The core of NPF is made up of the core that made up Zanu PF before the November 15, 2017 military coup that unconstitutionally deposed president Mugabe and illegally imposed Mnangagwa.

That core of Zanu PF as it was before the coup has joined hands with a cross-section of other Zimbabweans from across the political divide to found and establish NPF whose immediate objective is to restore constitutional order, normalcy, democracy and legitimacy in Zimbabwe. You must understand that the military coup left Zanu PF in tatters.
Beneficiaries of the coup can, of course, gather in meetings here and there claiming to be Zanu PF (but) they and everyone else who was truly Zanu PF before the military coup know that the coup destroyed Zanu PF. There’s no real Zanu PF out there. All you have are make-believe appearances of Zanu PF, which will come to historic grief at the polls when the real Zanu PF speaks through the ballot against bullets.

In the end, politics will always lead the gun and triumph over it. History is full of lessons about that.

Mary Chiwenga Blows Out, “Leave My Dressing Alone”

Vice President Chiwenga’s wife Mary says she will wear what she wants and does not care what people think.

Mugabe Donated Computers To Schools, But Forgot The Electricity

Computers donated by deposed Robert Mugabe to promote E-learning are still lying idle at various schools because the institutions do not have electricity, Information Communication Technology minister Supa Mandiwanzira has revealed.

Mandiwanzira, who graced most of the occasions when Mugabe donated the gadgetry, revealed this in the National Assembly last week after he was asked by MDC’s Magwegwe legislator, Anele Ndebele, what government was doing to assist schools which received those machines, but do not have computer teachers.

In his response the ICT minister admitted that many computers that were donated by Mugabe were lying idle.

“The former president donated several computers to schools that exist in very poor communities.  I could cite Nhlambabaloyi as an example.

“(Due to) lack of teachers, those computers were never used and now a good number of them are obsolete so to speak. Could there be a plan in place to replace these computers and assist the affected communities?”

“The former president donated computers that became obsolete before they were actually used, it is true that in a number of circumstances, the schools lacked the initiative themselves either to buy a small generator so that they could use these computers or put up solar infrastructure so that they could power the computers,” he acknowledged.

“They (schools) buy buses and the parents contribute to buy these buses.  We believe that if they prioritise also putting up power in order to power these computers so that kids can learn computers on a daily basis that would actually be very helpful.”

Norton Independent MP Temba Mliswa weighed in arguing that the Energy ministry and Mandiwanzira’s must work together to ensure the computers are put to use.

“I think what is important about these programmes is also what the Ministry is doing in terms of also working with the Energy ministry in terms of power.

“We do not want to have a repeat of the former President who gave computers to schools that did not have electricity.  If you look at Norton for example, there is Chitenderano,” he said.

“It is important that they actually work together to try and complement each other because it does not make sense for them putting this yet there is no power.

“ It is a right minister for people to have electricity, so it is not the schools that must find money to put electricity.  It is like water, it is a right that they have it.” Daily News

Kasukuwere, Sekeramayi Fail To Pay Farm Workers – REPORT

FORMER Cabinet ministers Sydney Sekeramayi and Saviour Kasukuwere have been accused of neglecting their farm workers and underpaying them.

Kasukuwere and Sekeramayi lost their jobs in November last year after the military pushed former president Robert Mugabe out of power.

Farm workers, who are being represented by the Progressive Agriculture and Allied Industries Workers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PAAWUZ), are accusing Kasukuwere (known as Tyson in some circles) of underpaying them.

Sekeramayi, on the other hand, is accused of failing to pay workers’ benefits running into thousands of dollars.

According to a letter of notification to attend a hearing to be conducted by the agriculture industry’s national employment council (NEC), Sekeramayi is expected to respond to the allegations raised by his 27 workers on March 20.

“You are notified that the matter/appeal concerning alleged non-payment of wages, accommodation, fue

l, light allowances and terminal benefits in respect of which a notice of appeal/reference was made on the 03/02/18 and to which you are a party to,” read the notice. Sekeramayi and the workers were expected to appear before an arbitrator, Edmond July Kupara.

A letter seen by The Standard addressed to Kasukuwere’s wife by the employment council dated March 9, alleged underpayment of wages and improper grading at Corncorpia farm.
She was given seven days to respond and another seven days to settle the matter.

In an interview yesterday, PAAWUZ secretary-general Raymond Sixpence said they would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that workers are not exploited.

“The workers should be educated about their rights and the unions must also be visible on the ground teaching the workers about their rights,” he said.

“The NEC must operate openly and the ministry of labour must fast-track the handling of all labour cases.

“The Labour Act must be amended and Statutory Instrument 116 for the agriculture sector must be amended so that it suits the needs of workers. Workers’ grievances must be solved timeously.” Standard

Mujuru, Mutinhiri Join Forces Against Mnangagwa

Former President Mugabe’s current political disciples Dr Joice Mujuru and Retired Brigadier-General Ambrose Mutinhiri are likely to go to bed if the latter accepts the invitation to join the People’s Rainbow Coalition (PRC) largely seen as a ploy to divide the Mashonaland vote and deny ruling Zanu-PF an absolute majority in this year’s elections.

The two are believed to be under the political tutelage of President Mugabe who is slowly coming out in the open as a bitter enemy of the new political dispensation led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. The PRC leader and presidential candidate Dr Mujuru recently welcomed the National Patriotic Front (NPF) man to the political arena saying doors were open for his party to join the coalition, confirming that Zanu-PF was a political giant that needed combined efforts to fight.

Dr Mujuru said this in an interview after addressing a Midlands North Provincial meeting in Kwekwe on Tuesday where she admitted Zanu-PF was a tough challenge which needed a stronger opposition. Rtd Brig-Gen Mutinhiri was appointed leader of the NPF after resigning from the revolutionary party citing irregularities in the way the new Government took over power from Cde Mugabe.

“We welcome him to the political fray and wish him the best. But as PRC, we are not saying he should join us, neither are we saying he should not. Our train is in motion and anyone who is willing should jump onto the train before it leaves,” she said.

The former Vice-President said the coalition was formed with a sole mandate of removing Zanu-PF from power hence it would not be prudent to close doors on other parties. PRC is however, made up of obscure four political parties namely ZUNDE, DARE, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and National People’s Party (NPP).

She said it was always going to be tough to win seats in the Midlands since it is the home ground of President Mnangagwa.

“We have failed to handle the province and as a result we have divided the province into two to allow the party to reach out to the people at grassroots.

We all know that Ngwena (as President Mnangagwa is known in political circles) hails from here and regards this as a no-go area but I challenge you to work hard,” she said.

PRC secretary-general Mr Gorden Moyo labelled MDC Alliance leader Advocate Nelson Chamisa as a political juvenile who was riding on the youths’ back to achieve personal political gains.

He went on to call for a free and fair election that is not marred by incidents of violence. – state media

Mnangagwa Signs Zimbabwe Into Kazungula Breakthrough

By Farai D Hove| President Emmerson Mnangagwa has signed Zimbabwe Into the Kazungula Bridge deal.

Below was his anmouncement Sunday morning:

“Yesterday I joined President Khama of Botswana and President Lungu of Zambia to inspect progress at the Kazungula Bridge.

The bridge was due to link Zambia and Botswana, but yesterday we agreed to incorporate Zimbabwe into the project, which will allow us to benefit from the increased regional integration, development and trade it will bring.

Our involvement in projects such as this will have a big impact on our economy, and also sends a message to businesses and governments around the world that the era of an isolationist Zimbabwe is over!”

LATEST- China Decides “Kamuzu” Life Presidency for Xi Jinping

Life President… Chinese President Xi Jinping

BBC- China has approved the removal of term limits for its leader, in a move that effectively allows Xi Jinping to remain as president for life.

The constitutional changes were passed by China’s annual sitting of the National People’s Congress on Sunday.

The vote was widely regarded as a rubber-stamping exercise. Two delegates voted against the change and three abstained, out of 2,964 votes.

China has imposed a two-term limit on its president since the 1990s.

Mr Xi, however, defied the tradition of presenting a potential successor during October’s Communist Party Congress.

Instead, he consolidated his political power as the party voted to enshrine his name and political ideology in the party’s constitution – elevating his status to the level of its founder, Mao Zedong.

In late February, the party proposed removing term limits from China’s constitution. Mr Xi was due to step down in 2023.

On paper, the congress is the most powerful legislative body in China – similar to the parliament in other nations. But it was widely believed that it would approve what it was told to.

Rare dissent

The issue is not, however, without controversy.

The National People’s Congress has never voted against the Communist Party. But some reports suggest a number of the 2,980 delegates may abstain – which would be seen as a clear protest vote.

Censors in China have been blocking discussion around the topic, including images of Winnie the Pooh. Social media users have taken to using the cartoon character to represent Mr Xi.

One government critic wrote an open letter describing the proposal as a “farce”, in a rare show of public dissent.

Former state newspaper editor Li Datong wrotethat scrapping term limits for the president and vice-president would sow the seeds of chaos – in a message sent to some members of the national congress.

“I couldn’t bear it any more. I was discussing with my friends and we were enraged. We have to voice our opposition,” he told BBC China.

State media, however, have portrayed the changes as much-needed reform.

US President Donald Trump was criticised by some commentators for seeming to approve of Mr Xi’s unlimited rule, saying on Monday: “President for life… I think it’s great. Maybe we’ll have to give that a shot some day.”

At a political rally on Saturday, Mr Trump insisted he had merely been joking during a fundraiser, and that his comments were represented unfairly by some media.

Xi Jinping thought

Mr Xi’s possible third term is not the only item the National People’s Congress is likely to approve. It is also expected to:

  • confirm China’s new government line-up for the next five years, kicking off Xi Jinping’s second term as president
  • ratify a law to set up a new powerful anti-corruption agency
  • ratify the inclusion of the president’s political philosophy – “Xi Jinping Thought” – in the constitution

Xi Jinping thought is the ideology approved by the Communist Party last October. Officially, it is “Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for the New Era”.

Mutinhiri Dismisses Mzembi Efforts To Broker Ngwena-Mugabe Deal

Former Cabinet minister and diplomat Ambrose Mutinhiri was arguably the biggest newsmaker last week after his abrupt resignation from Zanu PF and Parliament to lead a breakaway party now challenging President Emmerson Mnangagwa ahead of elections later this year.

Mutinhiri, who leads the National Patriotic Front (NPF), which has received an endorsement from former president Robert Mugabe, was accused of being behind deadly politically violence in Marondera, among a plethora of charges critics said made him an unsuitable political leader.

Everson Mushava yesterday had a wide-ranging interview with the former Zipra commander who had unkind words for Mnangagwa’s government. He also disputed claims that Mugabe and his wife Grace are members of the NPF. Below are excerpts of the interview.

EM: You have been in the media and there are reports that you met Mugabe, are you at liberty to tell us the details of your meeting(s) with him?

AM: No, no, no. I’m not at liberty to tell you details of my meeting with president Mugabe. The meeting was long and very instructive from a guidance point of view as it covered a range of important issues about our nation many of which are not for public consumption.

EM: Former Foreign Affairs minister Walter Mzembi was quoted yesterday saying Mugabe and Mnangagwa may work together in the forthcoming elections, what does this mean for your party?

AM: It means absolutely nothing. The founding members of NPF are tried and tested freedom fighters and disciplined cadres. We are not guided or moved by fiction or spin that is planted by mischief makers in newspapers.

Also, I’m not aware that president Mugabe has appointed Cde Mzembi or anyone else for that matter as his spokesperson. But I’m indeed aware as you are that Mnangagwa has a government and party spokesperson, none of whom has said anything even slightly resembling the claim that president Mugabe and Mnangagwa have agreed to work together in the forthcoming elections — a claim attributed to Cde Mzembi.

So I think only Cde Mzembi and the newspaper that quoted him can help you on that one.

EM: Are you aware of negotiations between Mugabe and Mnangagwa?

AM: No I’m not aware of any such negotiations. I don’t think it’s possible to be aware of something that’s not there, but which maybe in the minds of some people who are scheming this or that scenario for reasons best known to themselves.

I think it is important for people to understand that president Mugabe has nothing to negotiate for or about with anyone. His benefits and those of the former first family are constitutional as are his political and human rights.

Everyone is equal before the law and the law, therefore, does not discriminate against president Mugabe.

He and his family are fully entitled to all their constitutional benefits and their civil and political rights just like you and me are. So why would he want to negotiate his or the rights of his family that are enshrined in the constitution? Is that what the so-called new era is about? Is it about humiliating and blackmailing president Mugabe and his family into negotiating their constitutional rights? Is that what the so-called negotiators are trying do? If it is, then they have successfully planned for failure.

EM: Mzembi’s story shows that former G40 members who are supposed to form the core of NPF are divided and others are seeking accommodation from Mnangagwa’s administration. What is your comment on that?

AM: What is G40?

EM: So, do you mean to say Mugabe will not endorse Mnangagwa as the Zanu PF presidential candidate in the 2018 elections?

AM: You know what, when this issue came up at my meeting with president Mugabe last Sunday he was emphatic and unequivocal about his position. Let me say what he told me about this.

He said to me: “ED thinks I am an idiot. How does he think I believe their claim that they are about upholding the legacy of the president, my legacy, when I’m down because of them and when they have been dragging me in the mud?”

People, especially in Zanu PF, want honest holders of the legacy of the president and they condemn hypocrisy, they condemn military brutality against the people.
He went on to say: “ED says he wants me to endorse him, what will I be endorsing? Hypocrisy? Brutality against the people?

“The killing and battering of children (CIO and police officers) who worked with me? No, no, no; I’m not an idiot.

“The political and illegal arrests must stop if the military regime is true to its claims that it is about upholding the legacy of the president. Why is it doing these injustices?”

EM: Now to your resignation from Zanu PF. The meeting with Mugabe has invited a backlash from your former party and state media. Zanu PF has even despatched a delegation of senior party members to create a wedge between yourself and voters in Mashonaland East province. What is your reaction to that? Can you briefly describe your first week as an opposition politician?

AM: I have nothing to tell them except to say God forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.

As for my first week as NPF leader in formal terms, I have been overwhelmed and encouraged by the positive and inspiring response from across the country and across the political divide as well as from the Diaspora and well-wishers in the Sadc region and elsewhere on the African continent. The messages of support and goodwill keep pouring. What has really touched me in a particular way is the realisation that the people on the ground were waiting for this moment. They are telling me that “NPF yasimudza dust rakapenga” [NPF has raised dust]. So it has been a very good week in office.

EM: Zanu PF members have come out to attack you as a wartime deserter who caused confusion in the liberation struggle. Can you comment on your alleged links to Frolizi?

AM: I will not dignify inane views of self-styled stockholders of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle about those who disagree with them. What value would my comment on ridiculous allegations about Frolizi, 37 years after the liberation struggle, add to today’s burning bread and butter issues and the need to restore constitutional order, normalcy, democracy and legitimacy in the country? It’s a shame that this “chunhu chedu” [our thing] thing has gone too far. It needs to be stopped.

EM: One of the first accusations was that you were part of Zanu PF’s violence machinery during the bloody 2008 elections. What is your comment on allegations that you were involved in the murder of MDC-T activists and you threw their bodies into Wenimbe Dam?

AM: It is common knowledge that Wenimbe abductions you are referring to happened in Marondera East under the then area Member of Parliament, Cde Sydney Sekeramayi, who was also Minister of State for National Security. Your question would, therefore, be better answered by Cde Sekeramayi. I was MP for Marondera West and in my constituency there were no abductions of the kind you are referring to. I, therefore, want to say quite categorically that I was not part of any electoral violence in 2008.

EM: In your view, who was behind the violence that left over 300 MDC supporters dead and displaced thousands others?

AM: The violence happened across the country and did not only affect MDC supporters, whose number I don’t know, but it also affected Zanu PF supporters, especially in Mashonaland provinces, who were accused of “bhora musango” allegedly because they were linked to then vice-president Joice Mujuru under the tutelage of the late General Solomon Mujuru.

Because of the seriousness of the matter, and given Mnangagwa’s recent shocking claims published in the British Economist Magazine that there was not even one single case of electoral violence in 2008, it is important that, like that of Gukurahundi atrocities, the question of who was behind the 2008 electoral violence must be the subject of a judiciary inquiry to settle the matter once and for all in the interest of truth and justice.

EM: During that time you were among senior Zanu PF officials who never came out to condemn the violence. Does that mean you approved of what was going on?

AM: I think that people need to know that this question of the 2008 electoral violence was a hotly discussed in Zanu PF.

It was a very divisive issue because many comrades from the affected areas demanded answers and justice.

The violence was heavily condemned internally within Zanu PF structures.

The fact that people did not come out in public with their condemnations was largely because of issues and dictates of internal democracy that require open discussion inside and silence outside.

But you will recall that this is the one major issue that necessitated Sadc and AU to intervene with the result that there were interparty negotiations that gave birth to the GNU between 2009 and 2013.

So that 2008 electoral violence was not ignored at all.

EM:  Do you believe Zanu PF rigged elections and used violence to retain power and who was behind such heinous strategies?

AM: The question of whether elections were rigged is not a matter of belief but a technical matter of knowledge and information.

I don’t have such knowledge and I don’t have such information because I was never involved in the technical administration of elections. If anyone has such knowledge or information, I would be happy to look at it and to act on it.

EM: In resigning as a Zanu PF member you claimed that Mugabe’s removal was illegal and that soldiers had taken over the ruling party. Did it take you four months to realise that what happed violated the Constitution?

AM: A military coup is a military coup and it is unconstitutional. It speaks for itself.

You will be aware that it is now a well know fact that internal consultations within Zanu PF to find constitutional ways of challenging the coup government started on 19 November 2017.

It was clear that the central committee, which met that day was illegal and unconstitutional because it was an extension of the coup.

That’s I did not attend it. The same goes for the ill-fated attempt at impeachment on November 21 2017, it was unconstitutional and would have failed had it been put to a secret ballot vote.

I did not attend that session. So no, it has not taken me four months to realise that what happened on November 15 2017.

I with other Comrades knew this position from day one and we took various measures to deal with it.

You are aware that as NPF will filed a petition with Sadc and AU against the coup in January 2018, not this month. We have been busy at work in a deliberate and organised way.

EM:  There are allegations that you were part of the Zanu PF process that resulted in President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s elevation. Can we then not say you had a hand in Mugabe’s ouster?

AM: I just told you that I did not attend the Zanu PF central committee meeting of November 19 2017 nor did I attend the Parliamentary session that attempted to impeach president Mugabe.

These are the only two processes that elevated Mnangagwa and I was not part of them.

EM: You are said to be the leader of the Zanu PF breakaway party, the NPF. Who elected you into that position and who endorsed you as the party’s presidential candidate?

AM: I’m NPF’s founder leader and presidential candidate in the forthcoming general elections by the decision of the founders of NPF as enshrined in the party’s Constitution adopted on December 7 2017. The founders of the party will be made public in due course.

EM: Who else is in the NPF structures since only your name and that of Jealousy Mawarire’s have featured in the media?

AM: We will be announcing the complete founding structure of the NPF when we determine its necessary and in the interest of NPF to do so.

We are only too aware of the wicked machinations of the coup government and we will not give hostage to fortune on a silver platter.

EM: Are exiled former Zanu PF officials linked to G40 such as Jonathan Moyo, Patrick Zhuwao and Saviour Kasukuwere linked to the party and in what way?

AM: No. They are not. But we would of course welcome their goodwill and support as we are ready to welcome the goodwill and support of all Zimbabweans in and outside the country.

EM:  What role is Mugabe playing in the NPF and what is your view concerning Mnangagwa’s statements that he is not happy that the former president is associating with your party?

AM: President Mugabe has no role in NPF. We have sought his goodwill and as our iconic liberator and founding leader of our nation and we are pleased that he gave us audience.

We know that our youth are inspired by his exemplary vision for youth empowerment and generational renewal.

He has also challenged us to keep alive the dream of Father Zimbabwe, Joshua Nkomo, a united and prosperous Zimbabwe.

So we find our enduring nationalist inspiration from these two founding leaders, President Mugabe and the late Vice President Joshua Nkomo.

As for Mnangagwa’s statement that he’s not happy with President Mugabe’s associating with NPF, I say tough luck ED. The horses have bolted.

EM:  What role is former first lady Grace Mugabe playing in the party?

AM: None. We respect her and appreciate the excellent work she did to advance the empowerment of women and the youth and we are looking forward to her continuing to do and grow that work in the interest of our nation. Her courage and bravery are inspiring.

EM:  Some say you only left Zanu PF because you were disappointed that you were never made VP after the coup. What is your reaction to that?

AM: The reasons I left Zanu PF are written in black and white in my resignation letter of March 2 2017. I refer you to that letter through which I fully explain my reasons in words that are now immortal.

EM:.  What would be the NPF’s campaign message and what are you offering Zimbabweans as a party?

AM: Some of that we signposted in our consultation document but yes, we will be reaching out in the coming days, weeks and months with our messages and manifesto.

EM:  In your view what needs to be done to ensure Zimbabwe hosts free and fair elections?

AM: Fundamentally, there must be a restoration of constitutional order, normalcy, democracy, legitimacy and demilitarisation.

The over 2 000 soldiers that are now embedded in villages and streets must be withdrawn through a credible programme.

Those who got power by force cannot be expected to run free, fair and credible elections.

It has never happened anywhere in the world. We cannot expect lunatics to run the mental asylum.

EM: Most people think there are now a lot of political parties in the country.  What made you decide to form a new party as opposed to forming a new one?

AM: You cannot have too much democracy. Let the people decide in accordance with the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

EM: There are talks by opposition parties of forming a broader coalition. Do you share the same view and is your party ready to form an electoral pact with other opposition parties?

AM: We are well disposed to work with others for a common purpose in the national interest.

EM  What do you think are NPF’s chances against Mnangagwa and MDC-T leader Nelson Chamisa? Why do you think people should vote for you and your party?

AM: Let the pundits predict, while we organise for the people to decide.

Ginimbi Schemes A Davido Blast

Flamboyant business tycoon, Genius “Ginimbi” Kadungure, has taken it upon himself to ensure that slippery Nigerian superstar, Davido, who last year stood up Zimbabwean fans on more than one occasion, finally fulfils his assignment in Harare. Ginimbi says he is fully aware of the damage that Davido’s no-shows caused to music lovers’ confidence in the artiste, which obviously may see many people being cynical about the April 21 gig, but the 33-year-old “self-made millionaire”, believes his reputation as an achiever will convince Davido’s fans that he can pull this off.

Featuring Jah Prayzah, ExQ and Killer T, the gig is set to take the form of an all-white party, Ginimbi’s trademark, at least for the VIPs and VVIPs, as Zimbabwean showbiz’s newest music promoter takes live concerts to a whole new level.

A seasoned local promoter has been roped in to guarantee smooth flow of the high stakes affair, as Ginimbi’s team studies the local showbiz terrain for even bigger events in the near future. Dubbed “30 Billion Concert”, the event is set to attract big spenders, most of whom have been felt left out when Ginimbi throws his glitzy annual all-white parties where only a select few are invited.
Beverages like Moet, Veuve Clicquot, Ciroc and high-end cognacs, whiskeys, vodkas; which are normally not in stock at gigs held at the Harare International Conference Centre, will be overflowing on the day. Reason being that Liquor Boys, a high-end alcoholic beverages supplier is partnering show organisers.

As for the music, Killer T would have released his newest product on April 6, which most music lovers, not just Zim dancehall fans, are eagerly waiting for. A collaboration between himself and Jah Prayzah will have also hit the music scene – and there is no doubt anticipation of a live performance of the song by the two artistes will whet many a music fan’s appetite.

On April 14 ExQ aka Mr Putiti, drops his latest “Tseu Tseu”, on which award-winning DJ Tamuka and barrier-breaker DJ Stavo are believed to have lent a hand. One wonders what is on that album or what hits it could spew that ExQ’s legion of mostly female followers would “kill for” to watch being performed live.

By the way – “Nhema” that anthemic song by Killer T and ExQ is still a club banger. If, say, the two artistes decide to recreate the magic that produced the mega hit live on stage at the HICC, the roof could actually come down. This show, because of its line-up, is scary, it makes one anxious, but most importantly – this could be history in the making.

“My Lilly” that collaboration between Jah Prayzah and Davido is now finally going to come to life live on stage; let us hope the HICC does not prove to be too small for this “made-in-heaven” line-up. Not much needs be said about Jah Prayzah and his abilities – he has proved himself countless times. But if he does not bring his A-game on the day, he could leave the venue with his tail neatly tucked in-between his legs.

According to Ginimbi, it is not lost on Davido that he let a lot of people down when he failed to come to Zimbabwe on previous occasions. Thus, Nigeria’s fourth richest musician, at a cool US$25 million according to Forbes Magazine, will come prepared to wow music aficionados with “all his hits and wits”.

“My guy, Davido understands fully the import of his no-shows. He has told me that he will bring to the stage not just his hits but his wits as well,” said Ginimbi in a brief interview last week.
He added: “As organisers we also understand what is at stake, so we will do everything we can with the resources at our disposal, to make sure that he comes to pay his debt to thousands of his fans here, who no doubt are in disbelief, but will believe once all this comes together.

“My team is on the ground. I have no history of failure and we are working with seasoned people in terms of organisational ability. This is definitely happening and Zimbabweans need not fear anything because this is the beginning of bigger things in local showbiz, we have come to add value to the game, we are changing things.” Sunday Mail

Govt Claims Diamonds Smear Campaign

A fresh attempt to smear the country’s diamond sector has emerged with the culprits bent on scuppering partnership manoeuvres between Zimbabwe and Botswana where the later will offer expert support in sorting and valuating local gems.

An unspecified intelligence report and mysterious sources last week alleged that the country could still be losing millions of dollars through diamond revenue leakages.

The report also painted a bad picture of the agreement signed between Botswana and Zimbabwe, suggesting that the state owned Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) could have been short changed.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail yesterday, ZCDC chief executive Dr Morris Mpofu said the report was misleading.

“In order to tap into Botswana’s experience in diamond mining, in 2017 the Government of Zimbabwe engaged the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security in Botswana to facilitate engagements between its State entity Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) and other Botswana State entities such as Minerals Development Corporation of Botswana (MDCB), Diamond Trading Company (DTC) and the Botswana Diamond Hub,” he said.

“ZCDC also toured DTC, which is the largest rough diamond processing center in the world, where cleaning, sorting and valuation of the entire Debswana production is done.

“DTCB has state of the art technology in security, cleaning, sorting and valuation of rough diamonds and also handles the international sales function for diamonds from Botswana, South Africa and Namibia.

“In 2017, ZCDC conducted a corporate diagnosis which identified bottlenecks in downstream processes such as cleaning, sorting, valuation and sales framework of rough diamonds. As a result, significant value was lost in downstream processes due to inefficiencies and rectifiable challenges.

“The bottlenecks in downstream processes led to poor branding of Marange diamonds, consequently resulting in underpricing.

“In March 2017, ZCDC took a deliberate strategy to exit the market and suspend all diamond sales until all the major diamond value management bottlenecks were addressed through the realignment and reorientation of downstream processes to match international standards and best practices.” Dr Mpofu said contrary to the suggestion that Zimbabwe would ship its diamonds to Botswana for cutting and polishing, ZCDC has plans to set up its own cutting and polishing centre for the beneficiation of the precious stones locally.

ZCDC has budgeted $5 million for the construction of its own Sorthouse infrastructure and to equip it with state of the art technology and systems as observed at DTC in Gaborone.

“In order to ensure growth of downstream industries across, ZCDC is spearheading the establishment of a Gemology Centre in Mutare whose planning is at an advanced stage.

Since the ZCDC assumed control of Marange diamonds, following the jettisoning of companies that mined in the area, the state entity has brought in sanity and some of its achievements to date include doubling of diamond output to 1, 6 million carats in 2017, while production is expected to further grow to 3 million carats 2018. Khupe Blue Roof Visit Story Torches Storm

A report that MDC Deputy President Thokozani Khupe was called to Robert Mugabe’s Blue Roof residence has torched storm.

Khupe was reportedly called to Mugabe’s house in January this year. The report by the South Africa based Sunday Times, alleges that the former President called her to a meeting at his house weeks before MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s death.

The development, if true could reveal that Mugabe has been taking several attempts to create a Coalition of political parties that will fight President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Khupe’s encounter would make her the 3rd opposition leader linked with Blue Roof after Mugabe’s removal. Others are Joice Mujuru and most recently Ambrose Mutinhiri, the leader of the New Patriotic Front, also called the National Patriotic Front.

Social networks were awash with the rumours Sunday morning with particularly WhatsApp forums upbeat on the debate of what may have happened soon afterwards. Khupe has for years been a favourite of the former leader from the days of the government of national unity.

Already other reports say that the former head of state is bitter concerning the way in which intelligence and police officers have been allegedly killed in the events of the last 4 months which saw him being removed from power.

ZimEye could not establish at the time of writing and the Sunday Times report on if she took up the invitation and physically visited the 94 year old deposed leader.

But the Sunday Times quotes a source saying,

“Khupe was invited to Blue Roof (Mugabe’s residence) by the former president in January. He called her and asked her to come to Harare.”

Mugabe Refuses To Endorse Mnangagwa

Former President Robert Mugabe has reportedly refused to endorse Emmerson Mnangagwa.

A report quotes the leader of the National Patriotic Front, Ambrose Mutinhiri saying Mugabe is concerned with the killing of police officers and CIO agents previously aligned to him. The report in the weekly Standard has Mugabe cited while saying,

ED thinks I am an idiot.

“How does he think I believe their claim that they are about upholding the legacy of the president, my legacy, when I’m down because of them and when they have been dragging me in the mud?

People, especially in Zanu PF, want honest holders of the legacy of the president and they condemn hypocrisy, they condemn military brutality against the people.”

Mugabe went on to say: “ED says he wants me to endorse him, what will I be endorsing? Hypocrisy? Brutality against the people?

The killing and battering of children (CIO and police officers) who worked with me? No, no, no; I’m not an idiot.”

“We Have Evidence Makandiwa Consults Witch Doctors”

A Harare couple currently suing, United Family International Church (Ufic) leader Emmanuel Makandiwa and his wife, Ruth, over “false prophecies” have alleged that they have evidence to prove that Makandiwa is a false prophet who gets his powers from witch doctors, N’angas.

Upenyu and Blessing Mashangwa in their opposing affidavit to Makandiwa’s application for the case to be dismissed, say,

“We must establish those allegations. We intend to lead evidence for instance which shows that the applicants obtain powers from their association with the occult, that they consult traditional healers, have people which they use in their church to obtain information from congregants and which Makandiwa passes on to unsuspecting congregants as prophecy.

“The affirmation is as false as the many ‘prophecies’ on the basis upon which we now sue Mr Makandiwa as a common fraudster.

“…I want Makandiwa to say under oath that he is a prophet of God. I want him to tell the court how his powers of prophecy were transmitted to his wife.

“…It is going to be clear that his receipt of tithes is a fraudulent act at any rate … It means nothing to me that Makandiwa is quoting scripture, even the devil does.”

This is the second time that Makandiwa has applied to the High Court to have the matter dismissed. High Court judge Justice David Mangota ruled against Makandiwa saying that he has a case to answer, leading to the Ufic leader applying again.

The couple’s lawyer, Jonathan Samukange, said,

“Makandiwa’s application is an abuse of the court processes. He is asking another High Court judge to overturn a ruling by the same court judge. He was supposed to go to a higher court. Makandiwa is basically saying make a ruling in my favour.” – CLICK HERE TO READ MORE

MAKANDIWA: “I’M ABOVE JUDGES” | Latest Twist

By Staff Reporter| United Family Church International leader Emmanuel Makandiwa who two weeks ago filed an application seeking to dismiss the lawsuit against him for fraud just after claiming that he is above the courts, has received a response to his latest application.

Makandiwa is being sued for among other things coordinating the fraudulent services of a fake lawyer, Mr Tichaona Mawere and therewith causing the loss of millions of dollars. The complainants are Mr and Mrs Upenyu and Blessing Mashangwa.

Mr Mawere, was exposed by the Law Society last year on ZimEye.com for practicing illegally and also defrauding other customers.

Last year the preacher, (Makandiwa) lost the case in which he was applying for dismissal while declaring that he is above the courts. He said he has ecclesistical powers. Ruling on the case, Justice Mangota said to Makandiwa the case was air tight. Justice Mangota dismissed Makandiwa’s application on the basis of both fact and merit.

Makandiwa has not opposed that ruling. Following his defeat, he has instead opened a new case in which he is now applying for dismissal of the lawsuit using another method and an entirely new argument in which he says among other things that Mr Tichaona Mawere was never the plaintiffs’ lawyer as raised in the suit.

The plaintiffs Mr Upenyu Mashangwa and his wife, Blessing have since filed an opposing affidavit against Makandiwa in which they seek, “for the dismissal of the (Makandiwa’s) application with costs on the higher scale. such costs being payable dollar for dollar.” –

Part of the affidavit reads:

“With those preliminary remarks. I wish to take certain points in limine…Matter passed in rein iudicatam.

“The substance of this application is one which this court has already settled without any appeal being brought by the applicants against the court’s determination.

“Whilst applicants claim that we have no valid claim, this court has issued a contrary judgment which the applicants have not questioned. Applicants are effectively asking a judge of this court to review a judgment issued by a judge of parallel jurisdiction. It is disgracefully insular and is an act of unwarranted impertinence of the applicants to make that request. I am advised that the matter is passed in rem judicatam and the exercise of function by this court has already ceased. It seems applicants are not used to taking the rough. I am hardly surprised, they run a little kingdom.

“I am advised that there is something in the nature of an estoppel which precludes applicants from seeking this kind of relief in light of the germane observations made by MANGOTA J in his judgment. It is therefore incompetent for this application to be brought. ”  More follows …

2018 ELECTION: SADC Observers Arrive

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is living true to his pledge of free, fair and credible polling with his administration today opening unrestricted access for the first international election observer team.

A Sadc mission arrives today for a week-long pre-election assessment, and will meet officials from Government, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, political parties and civil society.
The visit, which is in line with the Sadc Principles and Guidelines Governing Conduct of Democratic Elections, will appriise the regional body of Zimbabwe’s plan for a credible poll. Elections for the President, parliamentarians and councillors are due between July 21 and August 21, 2018.

The Sunday Mail understands that the arrival of the Sadc delegation is a precursor to other teams from the African Union and European Union, which are expected in Zimbabwe soon on similar missions.

President Mnangagwa’s administration is on an aggressive re-engagement drive with the international community and has pledged to invite international election observers, marking the end of the isolationist policies of the previous regime.

Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Trade Ambassador Joey Bimha said last week that, “Both Sadc and the AU are coming for the pre-election assessment process.

“It was decided that observing elections now entails long term observation and not just the polling process. The intention is that long-term observation guarantees stability and creates room for more thorough observation.
“Observation is now being done at three stages. The first one entails observing the pre-election period, the second stage is the campaigns and the polling, before a final team is sent to assess stability and acceptability after results have been announced.

“The Sadc Electoral Advisory Council is instrumental in this regards and will send a team. We will be having the Sadc team for the pre-election stage between March 11 and 17; they will be here to assess if the environment is conducive for holding a credible, free and fair election.
“While here, they will have discussions with Government, the ruling party, opposition parties, civic society and the elections management body so as to ascertain what the situation is like before the elections are held.

“For the AU team, we do not have a date as yet but they will be here in the coming weeks. I’m not sure about the dates for the EU team, but off hand I think they will be around the same time we will be hosting the AU delegation.”

According to the Sadc Principles, a “Goodwill Mission” should be dispatched for pre-election assessment, with the mandate to – among other things – evalate possible conflict and offer advice.
Sadc member states are required to invite a regional observer mission to observe their elections based on the provisions of the Sadc Treaty, the Protocol on Politics, Defence and Security Co-operation and the Sadc Principles and Guidelines Governing Conduct of Democratic Elections.

The Sadc Executive Secretary will, in consultation with the country holding elections, constitute and send an assessment missions in the period prior to elections.

The guidelines read in part: “In order to ensure the effective application of the Sadc Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections, the SEAC shall undertake Goodwill Missions in line with Article 9.2 of the SEAC Structures, Rules and Procedures.”

The mission is expected to: “Reflect on possible conflict situations in respective countries on matters pertaining to electoral processes and render advise to the Ministerial Committee of the Organ on Polices, Defence and Security Co-operation on the development of mediation strategies, before, during and after elections;
“Based on the findings of the Goodwill Mission, report to the MCO on whether the political environment is conducive to the holding of free, fair, transparent, credible, and peaceful elections in conformity with the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections;
“Encourage the specific SADC Member State holding elections to adhere to international best practices in all elections;

“Advise the specific Member State holding elections on strategies for enhancing and consolidating the capacity of the elections management body (EMB);
“Encourage the specific Member State holding elections to uphold and respect the independence and autonomy of the (EMB);

“Encourage the revision and improvement of electoral laws, codes of conduct and regulations in line with the Sadc Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections.”
The AU, on its part, dispatches a pre-election observer mission upon receiving an invitation from the nation planning polls.

The mission will determine, among other things, the existence of a “level playing field”.
“In advance of the election date, the Head of the AU Election Mission should advise the AU Commission whether the necessary conditions and environment for a free and fair election as agreed in the AU principles governing democratic elections, have been satisfied,” read part of the AU guidelines on elections.

“Whatever the advice received by the Commission should be confirmed in a public statement by the Chairperson of the Commission.

“The assessment team will establish whether or not conditions for organising credible, legitimate, free and fair elections in accordance with the Durban Declaration are in place in the country.”

More than 5,3 million Zimbabweans have registered to vote under a biometric voter registration programme.

Government is also amending the Electoral Act to include provisions giving a cut-off date for candidates to withdraw their candidature after being duly nominated.

Zimbabwe Election Support Network chairperson Mr Andrew Makoni said pre-election monitoring teams were crucial as issues that result in a contested election result usually arose before actual voting.

He said: “If observers arrive on the eve of an election they are likely to miss out on things they ought to have looked at like whether there was an enabling environment before the elections were held. There is need to assess the environment at least four or so months before the elections.” Sunday Mail
