The Gwanda Fire Brigade faced significant challenges while attempting to put out a fire that consumed a Toyota Runx outside Gwanda town, near the NSSA complex along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road, on Monday afternoon.

According to Chronicle, the fire brigade struggled when their rear water pump malfunctioned and failed to load water. In a desperate attempt to control the blaze, they resorted to using a small dish provided by a well-wisher, alongside a suction hose to collect water from a nearby source. This improvisation frustrated onlookers, who could only watch as the fire spread uncontrollably.

The vehicle, which was en route from Beitbridge to Gwanda, is believed to have experienced a mechanical issue. The driver had engaged a mechanic to address the fault, but while repairs were underway, the car unexpectedly caught fire.

Despite the fire brigade’s efforts, the vehicle was ultimately destroyed by the flames.

Elderly Man Narrowly Escapes Death After Being Struck by Moving Train

Bulawayo, Zimbabwe — In a harrowing incident, a 62-year-old man came within moments of being crushed by a moving train while sleeping on railway tracks under the Luveve Flyover on Saturday morning.

The man, identified as Everton Sithole, was struck on the head by the right side of a train bumper after he awoke too late to move from the tracks. Sithole, who is homeless, is currently admitted to Mpilo Hospital with head injuries and bruises on both legs.

Near-Death Encounter

According to Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube, the incident occurred as a train operated by the Beitbridge-Bulawayo Railway approached the site.

“The engineman initially thought he saw a heap of garbage on the railway sleepers,” said Inspector Ncube. “When the train was just two meters away, he realized it was a man with his head covered by a cloth. The victim raised his head, but it was too late to avoid being struck.”

The train driver managed to bring the locomotive to a stop approximately 15 meters from the point of impact and immediately called for an ambulance, which rushed Sithole to Mpilo Hospital.

Rising Train-Related Incidents

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) confirmed the incident and expressed concern over an increase in accidents involving trains and pedestrians.

NRZ spokesperson Andrew Kunambura highlighted that this was not an isolated case. “In the last week of October alone, eight separate incidents involving trains and humans occurred, injuring five people. One man in Mashonaland West was found with a broken leg after being struck on the tracks in Makwiro.”

Kunambura emphasized the importance of public vigilance near railway lines, urging both pedestrians and motorists to exercise caution. “Motorists must stop at all level crossings and ensure no trains are approaching before proceeding,” he said.

Harare, Zimbabwe — The shocking theft and forgery of the title deed to the US$600,000 residence of former Minister of Education Dr. Dzingai Mutumbuka has highlighted systemic corruption within Zimbabwe’s Deeds Registry. The case, which culminated in a High Court victory for Dr. Mutumbuka, has exposed serious flaws in the country’s property registration system and raised alarms about widespread title deed manipulation.

The High Court, presided over by Justice Nyaradzo Priscilla Munangati-Manongwa, ordered the illegal occupants of the Chisipite residence, Demetria Zirenga and Harrison Marange, to vacate the premises within 15 days. The judgment declared the original title deed held by Dr. Mutumbuka as valid, and the competing title deed presented by fraudsters as fake and invalid.

How the Fraud Unfolded

Dr. Mutumbuka, who has owned the property since 1988, fell victim to a carefully orchestrated scheme. His original title deed was removed from the Deeds Office by Lynna Mlambo, a supervisor, and handed to her boyfriend, Tatenda ‘Shaft’ Wakatama. The deed was forged and returned to the registry with altered ownership details.

The fraudulent deed was then used by Jonah Ngome, who sold the property for a mere US$140,000 — significantly below its market value. Zirenga and Marange, the purchasers, paid just US$45,000 initially and took possession of the house. Dr. Mutumbuka, represented by Advocate Edley Mubayiwa, was evicted in 2023 but swiftly sought legal recourse.

Court Ruling

Justice Munangati-Manongwa’s ruling dismantled the fraudulent transaction, affirming Dr. Mutumbuka’s ownership and ordering the Deeds Office to expunge the fraudulent title from its records. The judge criticized Ngome’s suspicious absence during court proceedings, stating, “Ngome is silent. He accepts the fraud to his deed by remaining silent.”

The judgment also exposed flaws in Zirenga and Marange’s case. They relied on a flawed agreement of sale and a fraudulent title deed, which Justice Munangati-Manongwa described as “replete with fraud.” Their lawyers, Hope Ndanaka Tirivavi and Advocate Method Ndlovu, were chastised for pursuing a meritless case, resulting in the dismissal of their application with costs.

Zimbabwe has been grappling with persistent power shortages for some time, largely due to a combination of factors, including low water levels at the Kariba Dam, which is crucial for the country’s hydroelectric power generation. The national grid’s capacity has been further strained by ongoing issues at the country’s key power stations.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) acknowledged the power crisis and explained that the situation had been worsened by technical faults at the Hwange Power Station.

“ZESA Holdings would like to advise its valued stakeholders that the national power grid is currently experiencing reduced electricity generation capacity due to a technical fault at Hwange Power Station,” the statement read. “This has been further compounded by low generation capacity at Kariba Power Station, resulting from low water levels.”

The power utility assured the public that its technical teams were working to resolve the issue. “Our technical teams are actively working to resolve the fault at Hwange to minimize the impact on our customers. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused,” ZETDC said.

Operating on FM 106.8, the station has been instrumental in saving lives and mitigating the impact of recent floods that swept through the region from November 11 to 15, 2024.

Collaborating with the Meteorological Services Department (MSD), Civil Protection Unit (CPU), and Disaster Rapid Response (DRR) teams, Vemuganga has exemplified the power of community media in disaster management. 

The station provided early warnings issued by the MSD, providing timely and localised alerts that reached even the most remote areas.

Using Indigenous knowledge systems and modern communication strategies, Vemuganga leveraged citizen journalists and community monitors to provide real-time updates on the impending natural disaster. 

In Chibuwe, Ward 20—one of the hardest-hit areas—Dakate Bridge was swept away by the floods. 

Thanks to the station’s swift reporting, the community quickly mobilised to repair the vital link, restoring access for motorists and villagers alike.

Due to Vemuganga’s proactive disaster alert system and deep-rooted connection with its audience, no fatalities have been reported in the district to date—a significant achievement in a region prone to severe climate-related disasters.

Chipinge remains highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Cyclone Idai, which wreaked havoc in the district in 2019, serves as a reminder of the urgent need for local preparedness and communication.

South Africa– Police in Limpopo have arrested five suspects tied to vehicle spiking, armed robbery, and murder on the N1 freeway, with some of the accused reportedly hailing from Zimbabwe.

The suspects, identified as Alberto Quiton Lucas, Khoza Khumalo, Tsakirai Wedzerai, John Moyo, and Brighton Zacheche, face charges stemming from a spate of armed robberies in June 2024. Khumalo, Moyo, and Zacheche are also implicated in a murder that occurred near Bela Bela.

The suspects appeared before the Bela Bela Magistrate’s Court on Friday, with their bail applications postponed to December 9.

These arrests come amidst rising alarm over road spiking incidents, a tactic used to force vehicles to stop and rob occupants.

In May 2024, Gauteng police apprehended 11 suspects in connection with similar incidents on major highways, with one suspect killed during the operation.

Highway safety remains a pressing concern as authorities work to address this growing threat.

The students, returning from a nightclub, were struck by a vehicle.

One, from the School of Hospitality and Tourism, was pronounced dead, while the others are receiving treatment at Chinhoyi Hospital.

The driver fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle. The Zimbabwe Republic Police said that they were still investigating this case.

By Political Reporter-The fractured Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) as acting president Welshman Ncube has stripped the party’s self-imposed secretary general Sengezo Tshabangu of his powers.

Ncube, who rotates the presidency with Tendai Biti, publicly dismissed Tshabangu, describing him as an ordinary party member with no authority to influence the party’s direction.

Speaking through party spokesperson Willias Madzimure, the Ncube faction declared Tshabangu’s claims illegitimate.
“The moment there are talks between Tshabangu and Ncube, we would be implying he is a ,” said Madzimure. “political party leaderBut he is claiming to be the secretary-general of the party and he can’t be the leader of the party at the same time.”

Tshabangu rose to prominence in the CCC earlier this year after claiming to be the party’s interim secretary.

Allegedly backed by Ncube and Biti, Tshabangu spearheaded a campaign that sowed discord and frustration for CCC founder Nelson Chamisa.

Using the self-imposed position, Tshabangu fired several CCC lawmakers aligned with the Chamisa.

Masvingo, Zimbabwe – A heated domestic dispute in Jerera Village, Guwa, turned violent after a 60-year-old woman, Sabina Mandizvidza, allegedly assaulted her husband, Richard Butire (63), with a metal rod. The altercation arose from a disagreement over Mandizvidza paying a prophet with a goat for cleansing rituals without her husband’s knowledge or consent.

Mandizvidza, who appeared before Masvingo Magistrate Lynette Mudzingo, admitted involvement in the scuffle but denied intentionally assaulting Butire. She claimed his injuries resulted from a fall during the altercation. The court remanded her out of custody pending further proceedings.

Prosecutor Precious Takuva told the court that the altercation occurred on April 30, 2024, at approximately 5:30 PM. Butire confronted Mandizvidza about the payment, which escalated into a physical altercation. Mandizvidza allegedly struck her husband twice on the forehead with a metal rod, causing two cuts. A medical report confirmed the injuries were caused by a blunt object.

Mandizvidza, however, argued that her husband was drunk, attempted to attack her, and fell, sustaining the injuries. She further alleged that Butire filed the report to retaliate after she sought maintenance, claiming he neglected her for another wife.

In a shocking incident, Munetsi Munemo, a 41-year-old man from Murape Village in Dema, was convicted of physically abusing his 70-year-old mother, Shupikai Munemo. The altercation occurred when Munetsi’s mother refused to give his son money for Civvies Day at school.

By A Correspondent| The ongoing dispute between Crowhill residents in Clever Hills and Mt Breezes Estate has revealed that the contested road in question is illegal, as it does not appear in any official Surveyor General or local authority plans.

Investigations confirm that Clever Hills residents created an unauthorized path cutting through private property on Mt Breezes to access a tarred road. The road is not part of any approved subdivision layout.

Wilson Mhuri, spokesperson for the Mt Breezes Residents Association, highlighted that Crowhill’s 2013 subdivision plan includes a designated road leading to a public roundabout, making the illegal path unnecessary. He added, “We gave Clever Hills residents four years to build their own road, but they have failed.”

A 2020 High Court ruling (HC 4174/2020) upheld Mt Breezes’ rights, confirming no legal public road exists between the properties. Despite the ruling, Clever Hills residents have continued using the unauthorized route, prompting Mt Breezes to install surveillance cameras and pursue legal action.

Goromonzi North legislator Ozias Bvute emphasized the need to respect court orders and accused a local land baron of fueling the conflict by selling illegal plots. He urged residents to prioritize lawful infrastructure development.

“It’s unfortunate that there are elements that have chosen to misaligne by infactually saying things that are not true. At the instant, Mt Breezes is a private development that obtained a court order which enables it to enclose their community and adjoining roads within their development.

“It would be irresponsible to encourage the residents that I represent in the greater Goromonzi to disregard court orders. Court orders must be respected and negotiations should be held with Mt Breezes that allow for an amicable resolution to the current impasse. But the premise is that court orders should be respected. Essentially, that’s what constitutes the upholding of the rule of law, which is what normal people are encouraged to do,” he said

He added, “the residents are being fronted by a prominent land baron who has illegally sold pieces of land that dont belong to them and by virtue of being put under pressure by the people she sold to is now trying to create confusion from issues around their settlement which is illegal.”

Mt Breezes maintains that it cannot accommodate illegal activities on its private property and encourages Clever Hills residents to construct a legal road as per their approved plans.

However, despite these pressing issues, the summit’s potential to address ongoing regional setbacks, particularly in Mozambique, remains in doubt, given the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) track record of inaction in the face of escalating crises.

The SAMIDRC mission, which has been tasked with supporting the DRC government in stabilizing the volatile eastern region, will be a central topic. As its mandate nears expiration at the end of December, SADC leaders will likely review the mission’s progress and consider renewing its mandate.

The situation in the DRC, however, continues to deteriorate, with militia violence and instability persisting in the region.

This ongoing failure to curb conflict raises serious questions about SADC’s effectiveness under Mnangagwa’s leadership, especially given the organization’s past shortcomings in addressing similar crises.

At the same time, recent elections in Mozambique have drawn significant attention.

Held on October 9, these polls were marred by allegations of electoral irregularities, and concerns about the ruling party’s control over the process persist. SADC’s response to these concerns, particularly in Mozambique, has been underwhelming.

The regional body has repeatedly failed to take meaningful action when member states experience political instability or military setbacks, such as in Mozambique’s northern Cabo Delgado province, where insurgency and violence continue to plague the country.

Despite SADC’s purported mission of promoting peace and stability in the region, it has been slow to intervene in these critical situations, often opting for dialogue over direct action.

This lack of urgency raises doubts about the body’s commitment to resolving regional crises.

SADC’s history of sluggish responses to electoral disputes and security challenges in member states casts a long shadow over any potential breakthroughs at the upcoming summit.

Will Mnangagwa’s leadership prompt a renewed commitment to regional stability, or will SADC once again fail to address the root causes of conflict in Mozambique and beyond?

As regional leaders gather on November 16 for the summit’s start, the agenda will include the usual bureaucratic procedures: meetings of senior officials, ministerial committees, and technical sessions. But these gatherings will likely do little to alter the status quo.
