Deployment of Shona Teachers In Matabeleland Schools Is The Main Cause For Low Pass Rates.

By Israel Dube- “To weaken a Ndebele is to deprive him of an education”, said the author of the 1979 Grand Plan, Nathan Shamuyarira. The document itself is the most evil conspiracy theory in Africa, to be produced by a black government against black  people who do not belong to its small and narrow tribal clan.

The deployment of Shona teachers who do not speak or understand Matabeleland languages is the main cause of year after year low pass rates in Matabeleland schools since the Shona supremacist government took over political power in 1980.

As confirmed by the above quote the low pass rates in Matabeleland is a planed outcome celebrated by the Shona supremacist government of Zimbabwe.

The low pass rate is in line with the 1979 Grand Plan. The intention is to weaken Matabele people by depriving them of an education so that they are employable only as house maids and heard boys for Shona people, so that they are not able to compete with privileged Shona tribe in the labour market.

MLO observes that before 18 April 1980 when the white colonial government was still in place, pass rates in Matabeleland and Mashonaland were equal.

What has changed now? The exam outcomes changed as soon as the tribalistic and corrupt Shona supremacist government took over in 1980. Mashonaland started recording extremely high pass rates both at primary and higher level and Matabeleland schools started recording low pass rates.

Did Matabele students become dull all of a sudden after Zimbabwe independence, why did the Shona supremacist government not take any steps to correct the outcome in the last 40 years? The evil government of tribalists is happy with the outcome and will never make an attempt to change it.

We know that the corrupt, trabalistic, ritualistic and genocidal Shona supremacist system is the one that sets and marks the exams. We are aware that exam papers are leaked to Mashonaland students for them to study and memorise answers before exams. We know that each school in Mashonaland is given a code to identify it
from Matabeleland school.

All this is done to deem Matabele people as dull, uneducated and unemployable so that they are tribally discriminated at higher institutions of learning, places of employment, economics, politics and socially in line with the 1979 Grand Plan.

All Matabeles must be aware that this is a political problem whose solution lies within the political parameters. If we stand akimbo and watch then we must expect worse things to come.

This war cannot be fought at individual level but everyone in Matabeleland must stand up and fight. If you find yourself collaborating with our enemies  while others are fighting you are nothing but a coward,  traitor and oxygen waster that deserves nothing but necklace justice.

It is not a crime to fight for one’s freedom, it is not a crime to fight for Matabeleland independence, it is not a crime to be patriotic and loyal to Matabeleland cause.

Matabeleland is our motherland which we are prepared to shade blood for. We are not Zimbabweans and some of us are humiliated to be called as such. We are humiliated to be associated with shameless corrupt thieves, witches, tribalists, genocidists, failures and bowl carrying beggars.

I-Beat Up-My-Wife After Discovering She Was Sleeping With Chiwenga, Mazura Alleges

NATIONAL, BUSINESS, BREAKING

It’s a long story that I couldn’t say in one day, but I will try to cut it short. In 2017 around July I was working as a kitchen chef in Marondera for a white man, so as I was working for him things were working well and I was staying near the vice president(then the Commander In Chief of the Defence Forces)‘s house in Water Groove, Marondera.

As I was staying there on one day, something struck me into shock, on a day I had forgotten my charger, and I had to go back and collect my charger, my phone was going to switch off during the day. I came back home and began looking for my phone charger, I started looking for it inside my jackets. I couldn’t find it and then I discovered inside one of the jackets inside the storage some money, about USD870.

When I discovered this money, I immediately went under shock because I know the family cash flow as any breadwinner would. There is no way you can suddenly find money in the house from nowhere; So I took the money so that I would ask my wife where the money has come from.

When she discovered that the money was no longer where she had lifted she came to me saying that the money belongs to some church fund. Somehow I believed what she was saying because as you would know ordinarily, this is my wife who I have never had problems with before.

But then suddenly something hit my mind which was the denominations in which this money was in. These were straight $100 notes, something totally inconsistent with the type of denominations that you would expect church money to come in because when people give money they give it in smaller donations of a varied spectrum.

But anyway, I just gave her a benefit of the doubt. So later on after completely forgetting about this matter, it was on a Sunday when there was a sudden phone call that my wife received. My wife kept cutting this person while I was waiting in the passage. At this time I said to myself something strange has to be happening. When my wife had gone into the bathroom I checked on her handset and found that the number of the person who had telephoned had been deleted. This was really extraordinary as I found it. I said to myself something is very fishy. I went to her WhatsApp hoping to check under the same number and found out that it was locked.

I later reset the whole phone, so that I can obtain all the images and messages and remove the password. When I had managed to ‘break’ into the phone, and reinstalled the WhatsApp, bringing back the entire backup, I was shocked to see the level of evil my wife had reached. I saw the number of the person my wife was talking to; they appeared as if they are a mediator but at the same time it was clear in the communication that she was bedding this person. This person bore the title, Mukuru.

I quickly restored the handset bringing back to its original status so that I would not immediately alarm my wife. I knew very well the chats I had deleted the chats that should be restored so that she would not find out that I now know a lot of things. She did not immediately discover, only to ask after a few days saying, what did you do to my phone?

It was now in November 2017, she was now leaving the house going away for long periods, until the woman wen called the landlady asked me: has your wife obtained a job somewhere or what? At this time my child needed some things bought in the town centre.

The “landlady” asked me saying: these days she is going in and out too randomly, during the weekends; is your wife doing some work during the weekends or what? I asked my landlady to help me because I could not figure out what is happening and needed assistance.

The landlady said to me that my wife has said she has obtained some part-time job during the weekend. The other day there is a day when she delayed coming home in the evening. I tried her cell phone while she was not at home, and she answered saying that she is at home. I asked her to tell me where exactly she is at home. She quickly switched her phone off. later on when she came back she claimed that she had been at church. At that time I did her up and then she told me everything that she has been doing. She said she had been at one time at the shopping centre and there is a car that followed him and the person inside called her. The driver asked for her number so according to her more telephone calls started coming through and eventually she was invited to a car which had two people inside and they said that we are just going to have some time out. She said that she was told she’s being taken to Masaiti Lodge, she was made to wait for about 10 minutes and then Constantino came to the room and introduced himself until he proposed to me, even though I was in panic mode.

He promised a lot of things and proposed love to me ordering me that I should keep quiet. He said that he wanted to sleep with me and gave me $100.

After that he assigned two men to escort me home.

The two men then drove away and went to drop her.

This was the beginning and afterwards, they started meeting regularly. She said she was even telephoned and told to come to the capital city Harare, but she was fearing that it could make her fail to return on time as this is far away. She says she then refused.

During the coming week she says that that is when things started happening. They started having sex.

When she has given me this confession I got really mad. The only thing that I did was I got out and travelled to the vice president’s house. The property was guarded by soldiers. Let me be clear with you I knew those soldiers because we used to smoke marijuana together. So most of the time we used to agree and the vice president rarely used to live there. So when I got there I asked for the vice president’s number. At that time she had refused with the other number, I asked for is number but the soldier I was talking to refused saying that doesn’t even have his number. The guy then asked me why I was interested in speaking with the general. I did not give him specifics. I told him that it is personal but I was told that they do not have the number.

I became frustrated and the next time there was an opportunity I would struggle again because when he would be around they would close the street, when they are doing something there.

So the other day when he was there I went to the property and ask to enter. The vice president had some Chinese people inside the property. At this time I decided I am going to make some noises. I determined in my heart that I am prepared to die for this. This was because I was so hurt why someone would take advantage of my wife. But in all that noise no one came out and the soldiers later came to scare me off and I ended up leaving. So after about a week I then travelled to Chitungwiza, I took some time off to travel to that area because that is home. When I went back there I spoke to my family elders who including father and my brother who lived in Kariba. So after this I had returned to Marondera, and I was now arranging, so that I can ask for some time off so that I could take my wife to her home and divorce her. That is when a vehicle then came to my house a Toyota Hilux it was grey in colour and when they came the rang the intercom, and then they went to park somewhere where they were not visible. So, (sic) is the one who traveled to the gate and asked if I am around and was told that yes I am there. So it was said by the boss, the person at the gate is Mr Mashungu. The man said that they wanted to see me because they have any event so they need to hire a chef. So when she came back to me, I responded saying I’m not that familiar in this town for people to know me that much, so where did this person’s get to know me then?

When I was watching from the kitchen that is when I noticed that there was a vehicle that was parked in a hidden corner so I asked the question why such a car was parked is if in hiding. So I then sent for someone to check for me who these people are and what they are up to.

So after this I became frightened but the person who had the car had already seen me and they started screaming asking for me to come forward if I want a job. The man said that he was in a hurry so wanted to know if I am interested in a job or not. At this point I kinda believed the man, and then I said my boss is around they do not allow me to do that so give me your phone number. The man raised his voice to confidently demand that I should come closer. It became clear to me that this person cannot be genuine. The man then announced saying if I do not open the gate they are going to do something against me. So at this point I then ran away from the gate rushing into to the inner property. I jumped the Dura wall, all the way into the past house that was behind the property. The neighbours of my workplace new me and I knew the place so I continued rushing, luckily I saw no one at the property so I continue rushing getting to a place called Wise Owl. I was now out of reach of this person but the only mistake I did was that I left my cell phone in the kitchen so I had no communication whatsoever so I started looking for someone who could phone my number. I asked for my boss to give me an update and they said that the person has since left. They said that the man just drove away they did not announce that they are leaving. So at the time I was told it became clear to me that something is happening. So I then asked for for someone to be sent with my cell phone so that I can meet them at Fairview. I knew the time that this other woman was leaving the property, so when this eventually happened, we did meet and I managed to get my phone so I travelled home. When I travelled home my heart was pumping fast. So in such a situation you will be unstable. My heart’s continued beating to the point that when I got home, as soon as I got home I was told that someone was looking for me, I asked my wife if she knows these people and she said she does not know them.

After this I left and I said it’s ok.

After about 2-3 days and you know, in such circumstances you would be pissed off and you will do certain things. I started posting things on Facebook. That is when I received a warning from a man who said to me why don’t I relax because I could risk a lot of things and it is better to be calm.

So I then went back to the website and deleted everything. what I did for sure was I wrote a story and went to put it in the vice president’s letterbox. I stated in the letter “just because we do not have money does not mean we are not able to keep our women. “

So in December that is when I was told by a certain young man… who worked at Masaiti, his house was in that same Street. He knew Sekuru DB, and Sekuru DB*** is the one who had organised this same job for me. He also lives in Weston park. That is when I was then told your wife I am seeing her at Masaiti, at work at the farm, but I am not understanding what she will be doing because I see her being dropped by a certain car and then see is picked up by another one. But I do not understand what she will be up to in all that.

So after this I then became angry and got drunk and I ended up beating my wife up. I thoroughly bashed her, so after that she said to me I am nothing I am a mere fly and even if I die she does not care. It could soon easily happen, so she threatened me. she then announced a lot of things including that I am a miserable fool. Then after that I said ok so if I am miserable then I shall leave you.

So these people sent by the vice-president started looking for me. On one day I had travelled to buy some vegetables while driving the company car, and while on the way, there was a black D4D that came in front to block my way, I heard the acceleration of that car and you know in such circumstances, you hear that the manner in which it is accelerating is unusual. So when it had blocked me I reversed when the vehicle was trying to turn my way I reversed at a corner and when I did I drove in the opposite direction of where I was going. At this point it became clear to me that there is no way I can be able to speed away from such a car. I took my keys and my phone which was in my pocket and decided to get out of the car and run. I jumped the durawall of a hospital and entered the hospital and ran all the way across to a place where there are flats and continued running and went to jump another wall. When I was now on another side I stopped and started making phone calls. I felt let me call a friend of mine who is a police officer who I decided not to give him too many details and he rushed to help me. I gave him my keys and asked him to go and collect my car. So they travelled to collect the car which they did, they brought it to me immediately.

After this I quickly rushed to go and drop the car at my workplace and decided to run away because my heart was now beating fast; so when this had happened, I went to inform my uncle, he was a member of the MDC party, and was compaigning to be an MP for Buhera.

My uncle told me to just avoid these people because I am not known and due to that I could be killed at any time. He said that because I am not well known I could be killed and no one would ever search for me because I am not popular.

So on one day while I was with my uncle while we were driving in Mutare road, we got out at a roadblock that is usually mounted by police officers in Marondera, the first road block while you are travelling from the capital city Harare, that is where we came out of. That road gets you straight to the house of a certain pastor. When I got there when we were now in the town, that is when we suddenly saw in front of us, a car that wanted to stop us.

I noticed this car and I told my uncle not to stop because this is one of the cars that had been chasing me before. But my uncle did not listen to me, as soon as I noticed the danger, I physically ran out of the car and started fleeing. I passed through a certain place where there is a man who keeps snakes, and even though I was running those men who were chasing me continued screaming for me to stop, and according to my uncle those men were serious because they literally assaulted my uncle blaming him for allowing me to escape.

My uncle says one of them was assaulted at the ribs. Until the day my uncle died he continued complaining about that same rib.

I then disappeared for that day and decided to run away completely this time. When I started seeking for advice I spoke to my nephew who works in the military and told me because of the state of my case the best thing was for me to run out of the country. He said that this is because these people will clearly be looking for me. I was also told by my father that I am being looked for in Chitungwiza.

I was now sleeping at a certain friend of mine in Chetombo. So when I had done these things, my nephew told me that no matter how much work I could get in the country I could lose my life these people would find me. So that very same month I decided to run to Mozambique, to Beira. I had a few bucks with me. I decided to look for a house. I chose that I would pay rent for 3-months and during that period I would then navigate around to see what I was to do afterwards.

At work hours now in the behaviour of literally sneaking into the property, using the other way and I was no longer using Fairview. So I think even my wife thought that I am no longer around I have run away. So they travelled as far as Chitungwiza, and when they came, I was later asked by my family the people who are looking for you they seem the mission to arrest you or something what exactly did you do? So I replied that I did not do do anything.

That is when I quickly decided to relocate to Mozambique. so when I was now over that country I was now confirming with D*. I started worrying about my systems because I would not be able to get a job. I was now worried under that feeling that someone is possibly watching me. I started feeling unsafe. So I then decided to go to Simango’s opposition. I went to present my case and the told me the only thing you can do is to try and find some employment that can help you to get immigration papers because if you return to Zimbabwe it is risky. But then how would I get immigration papers when I had no passport? So I went back to Zimbabwe when I went back home I went to the MDC Alliance. They recorded me the version of my story. When had done that they said to me the best thing we can do is to help you with a letter to get out of the country. I think they did their own investigations and verified with the relatives. My uncle was well known and I was given a letter but I did not have money to travel anymore. I was now broke. So I started living in Glen Norah until I got a job to drive trucks at Cairns. I continued living a very quiet life. After some time, and everything had gone well, I started communicating with my wife asking how the kids are. I would send money through someone else to make it appear as if I had sent the money from outside the country.

But I honestly needed to meet my children. But that was a terrible mistake I made. When I did that, she then began figuring out that I was local. the other day I suddenly decided to travel to where she said she was in the capital city.

I just travelled. I did not give her time to to think through or figure out where I was coming from. The only mistake that then happened, and at this time I was not driving around the country so well with no problems, and I had abandoned my career of a chef. A problem then happened when I had an accident in Marondera. I hit the car of one of the permanent secretaries. When this had happened, they wanted money and I had none. Another problem was that at the truck I was driving was brand new and it did not have insurance. I then tried to address the problem and offered to fix their car. After that we dealt with the police and and the cops said to me this person just wants to take money from you so why don’t you just tell them that you have your own mechanic who will fix the car. I spoke to that lady and she repeated to me that she wants money. So I said please talk to my boss. So that day both of us were told to submit our insurance to the police. But it turned out that they also did not have insurance, they were driving the car belonging to one of the permanent secretaries. So this is when all the problems started.

The other day I was carrying bales coming from Harare, I had relocated to Mutate, that is when I noticed that I had been stopped at the last road block that you see after leaving the town on your way to Mutare. The police told me that I am “the one who is being looked for concerning a recent accident.”

The number that the police officer gave me did not go through but the other one that’s the cop dialled went through. That is when I I was told that the number has gone through. I asked which people are looking for me. they said that there is a big boss who want to meet you but is not from Marondera. They said the shef is not from the police, but loves in Marondera in Weston Park.

At that time I asked which shed wants to see me. At that time there was a white Navara that arrived without number plates. The car came and blocked my truck. I Immediately started running, and I left my keys inside the ignition. I just fled.

When I had fled my truck was taken to Macheke Police. When they took it they filed against the truck saying that it had been impounded because of an accident. So I then asked someone I was working with to go and get my truck.

When this guy went to pick it up it was said that there is a fine that needs to be paid and for the truck to be released they wanted me to physically present myself. So they later agreed to release the truck but they demanded a fine. My colleague agreed to pay the fine. When my friend brought the truck to me I then took it and drove all the way to Mutare. As soon as I had arrived in Mutare, I was telephoned and asked if I want a job, and that if so, I should come to Allied Timbers.

I said yes. When I got there yeah while I was waiting for the assignment I saw another car waiting for me at a distance of about 100m. I saw the person calling me at that distance asking me to get near where he was and I immediately understood that this is the same person who called me for a job. I concluded within myself that this person cannot be genuine why are they they standing away from where I am if they truly want to give me a job? If someone wants to give me a job at allied timbers, that person would be physically inside the property not outside. So I got out of the truck and started running away. When I’d run away, it was now very clear to me that something fishy is happening. I then spoke to D*, who then advised me that the people who are chasing me likely to be mere zealots who are trying to please Chiwenga. I was told that they will keep on doing that until they get me, so I should leave the country.

I now had a girlfriend who was now pregnant. I decided not to leave my girlfriend, I told her I need to get out of the country and it will not be right for me to leave you. So I had a little bit of money with me. So when I had noticed this has happened, I quickly got out of the country with a pair of clothes that I had with me. I jumped the border I am with my wife right now this is the story.- ZimEye

Bribe Taking ZRP Quartet Nabbed

By A Correspondent- Four police officers in Bulawayo were arrested for allegedly demanding and receiving a car as a bribe to free a suspect who was in custody for unlawful entry and theft.

The officers approached Selby Nkala, the suspect’s boyfriend, after their attempt to get the bribe from Shuvai Mutimwi, a relative of the suspect, proved abortive.

The suspect, Sakhile Dube’s boyfriend Nkala agreed to pay the bribe, but asked for time to sell his car, a VW Polo, for US$500 — the amount that was being demanded by the police officers.

It is alleged that the car was then bought for US$500 by one of the accused, Tendai Ndaveni (48), previously in charge at CID Hillside Police Station.

This was heard when Ndaveni and his accomplices Emias Matsheza (45), Shepherd Ndawana (42) and Faith Ncube (32), who were all reportedly stationed at ZRP Hillside Police Station, appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Stephen Ndhlovu, facing charges of bribery and criminal abuse of office.

They were granted $5 000 bail each and will be back in court on 26 March.

It is reported that on 17 November 2020, at around 2pm, the accused arrested Dube in connection with an unlawful entry and theft case and detained her at ZRP Hillside Police Station.

They then demanded US$500 to let her off the hook.

The court heard that Dube then referred them to Shuvai Mutimwi, who failed to raise money before she approached Dube’s boyfriend Nkala, who offered to sell his car and it was allegedly bought by Ndaveni for US$500, the amount which was allegedly demanded by the accused.

The sealing of the illicit deal saw Dube being released from custody.

During investigations and upon their arrest the vehicle in question was recovered from Ndaveni.

Mberengwa Teenager Hauled To Court For Baby Dumping

By A Correspondent- An 18 year old teenager from Mberengwa has been dragged to court after she dumped her seven-month-old baby in a bush following a misunderstanding with her husband.

Charity Mpofu of Clinton Mine in Mberengwa pleaded guilty to the charge when she appeared before Mberengwa magistrate Evia Matura.

In mitigation, Mpofu told the court that her husband Farai Charamba had refused to take care of her and the baby and she decided to dump the infant as she had no means of taking care of the baby.

“Your worship, I acted out of anger and desperation as my husband had refused to take care of me and the baby. Out of desperation, I dumped the baby in the bush hoping that she will be picked up by someone who will take care of her,” she said.

Matura sentenced Mpofu to 120 days in prison, which were wholly suspended on condition she does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.

The State presented that on December 28, 2020 at around 2pm, Mpofu had a misunderstanding with her husband Charamba.

After the disagreement, Charamba left Mpofu with the child at home and went to a bar. Mpofu then went to a nearby bush where she dumped the baby.

The baby was found by passersby at around 3pm and was taken to a police station where a report was made.

Faith Mwale represented the State.

Married Woman’s Shenanigans Exposed By Prophet

By A Correspondent- In one of the most shocking revelations, a married woman who conceived a child with her lover and deceived her husband to raise it as his own had her clandestine deed exposed by a prophet she had consulted after the child had fallen sick.

Nothabo Moyo from Kingsdale suburb in Bulawayo had gone to the prophet with her mother-in-law.

It proved to be an unwise decision as the prophet ordered Moyo to tell her mother-in-law the truth about the biological father of her ailing child.

Scared that the child was going to die, Moyo reportedly confessed that the child was not that of her husband Gracious Maphosa, but of her unidentified boyfriend.

Details of the shocking confession are contained in Maphosa’s court papers in which he is applying for a downward variation of maintenance.

Maphosa, who is also now doubting paternity of the first child, is seeking variation from $3 000 to $1 500 per month towards his second child with Moyo while awaiting to do paternity tests.

The two separated in August last year after Moyo confessed that Maphosa was not the father of her second child.
In his application which is yet to be heard at the Bulawayo Maintenance Court, Maphosa said his main reason for downward variation was reduced working hours at his workplace due to Covid-19 lockdown which resulted in his salary being slashed.

“I am applying for downward variation in maintenance. I am no longer fully employed and my monthly income was affected after my working hours were reduced as a result of the Covid-19 national lockdown. I separated with Nothabo Moyo in August last year after she cheated on me and later confessed that I was not the biological father of her second child.

“She confessed after the child had fallen ill before a prophet she and my mother had consulted for help. After that confession, I’m also no longer sure if I’m the biological father of the first child and wanted the court to grant an order compelling me to pay $1 500 per month while waiting to go for paternity tests,” Maphosa’s affidavit reads in part.

Man Nabbed With Dagga In Underwear

By A Correspondent- A man who was peddling dagga has been arrested after cops found twists of marijuana stuffed in his underwear in a wardrobe.

A source said cops from Entumbane Police Station received a tip-off that Mpumelelo Tshuma (42) had planted dagga at his house and was also selling it.

Detectives went to his home and they found Tshuma’s niece, Sherlyn Moyo (20).

The source said the cops conducted a search at the house and discovered four plants of mbanje in a vegetable bed.

The source said: “One of the plants was two metres, the other one was 1,9 metres, the other one was 1,8 metres and the smallest one was 1,6 metres tall.”

The source said Moyo fingered her uncle as the owner of the dagga plants. The inquisitive cops also gathered that Tshuma hid twists of mbanje in his bedroom.

Police then waited for him.

Tshuma arrived home at around 4.30pm from work and the detectives pounced on him.

They asked where he hid his twists of mbanje and he led them to his bedroom.

“He had stuffed twelve twists of mbanje in underwear which he had covered with clothes in a wardrobe,” said the source.

Police arrested Tshuma.

Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident.

“We arrested a man from Entumbane suburb who had planted mbanje in his vegetable garden and was also selling it.”

Assistant Inspector Msebele applauded members of the public for supplying the police with information that led to the arrest of the mbanje peddler.-BMetro

Popular Moneychanger Beats Up Girlfriend After Catching Her With Ex-Hubby

Henry Harare

By A Correspondent- In a dramatic incident a man ran berserk, beat his girlfriend and destroyed property after he found her with her ex-husband at her home in Lobengula West suburb in Bulawayo.

A source said Henry “Harare”, an illegal money changer who is known to many people as “Harare” at his Chicken Inn based opposite Tredgold courts, visited Memory Mahohoma at her house and found her in the company of Elliot Mukaro, her former husband.

Elliot Mukaro

Henry lost his cool and accused Memory of two-timing him with her ex.

More was yet to unfold. The livid Henry grabbed his girlfriend by the throat while accusing her of being a person of loose morals, said the source.

In a fit of rage Henry slapped Memory on the face while calling her names.

The source said: “He insulted her and accused her of having wasted his time since she was cheating on him and said she did not appreciate what he had done for her.”

He threatened to smash Mukaro’s car. Fearing for his life and his car Mukaro drove off at high speed, leaving Memory at the mercy of the furious Henry.

“He hit her with open hands all over the body and tore her skirt. She bled,” said the source.

As if that was not enough Henry smashed a television set and windows.

Memory said: “My ex-husband (Elliot Mukaro) had come to give our second-born child a cake since it was his birthday. Henry got angry after finding me with my former husband and thought we were mending our relationship.”

Memory Mahohoma

She added: “He insulted us before hitting me with open hands and threatened to smash my ex-husband’s car.

Mukaro fled. He then assaulted me before destroying my television set, windows and other things.”

Memory reported the matter at Magwegwe Police Station, but later on withdrew the case after Henry promised to replace the property he damaged.

“After the incident he sent his friends to ask for forgiveness on his behalf and promised to replace all the items he destroyed. I had to forgive him after he bought the television set and replaced damaged windows and bought other items which he had destroyed. Please do not write this story because I will face some harsh consequences at my workplace,” she said.

Memory whose marriage ended after she was caught cheating in 2018 was once in the media for the wrong reasons.

Memory Mahohoma

At the time Mukaro told the court that: “Mahohoma was just bitter that I left her after discovering she was unfaithful.

“She came to claim maintenance because she is bitter. I left her. I discovered that she was having extra-marital affairs. I was disappointed and I decided to move out of the house. I came across numerous WhatsApp love messages on her phone,” he said.

Efforts to get a comment from Henry were fruitless as his mobile number went straight to voicemail and efforts to get hold of him through his wife’s mobile number hit a snag as she said she did not know where he was.

“For a couple of days he has not been coming home and I don’t know where he is,” she said.

Arrested Journalist Fined $1k

By A Correspondent- Bulawayo24.com journalist Simbarashe Sithole was finally released from police cells after 9 hours of detention at Machipisa police station on Thursday.

The police took 9 hours persuading the journalist to pay  RTGS $1000 for allegedly improper masking which he paid under duress.

Having been arrested for unnecessary movement the police changed the charge after police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi  intervened.

Human Rights forum lawyer Nobel Chinhau had to intervene since the police officers were not keen with Sithole’s identity.

Speaking to Bulawayo24.com the lawyer said,” lnitially the charges were of moving unnecessarily at Machipisa Shopping center before the charge changed and he was told that he had been arrested for not properly wearing a mask.

Despite my explanation to my police officers as his lawyer that journalists are allowed to move freely they insisted that  the accused had to appear in court after 48hours”.

Sithole opted to pay the fine instead of staying in the cells which puts him at a risk of contracting Covid-19.

Form Four Boy Impregnates Form Two Schoolgirl

A Form Four student at Sobukhazi High School in Bulawayo lured his Form Two lover to his family home and had sex with her, resulting in her falling pregnant.

The 17-year-old Form Four student allegedly invited his girlfriend to his family home to watch a movie.

They watched a movie from a laptop and after some minutes the boy took his laptop and headed to his bedroom, the source said.

He then invited her to come through to watch the movie, the court heard. The unsuspecting minor complied and sat on his bed and they watched the movie.

While they were watching the movie the boy, who had already hatched his plan, started to kiss her, the court heard.

He asked to be in between the sheets with her, at first she refused, but after some persuasion the minor gave in and they engaged in sex.

After that, the court heard, the minor would visit her boyfriend and they would take booze and have sex. The sexual escapades resulted in the minor’s tummy bulging with her lover’s seed.

Seeing that she was young to have a baby, the minor asked one of her friends on how she could terminate the pregnancy and her aunt, who was in the dark about the pregnancy, got to know about it.

The aunt confronted the minor and had her tested for pregnancy and the test came out positive. The aunt then reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest of the boy.

The Form Four pupil appeared before magistrate Shepherd Munjanja, facing charges of having sexual intercourse with a minor. He was remanded out of custody to 26 March for commencement of trial. -B Metro

Loadshedding To Intensify Due To Fire Break Out At Hwange Power Station

The country should brace for more power outages after a fire broke out and damaged Unit One at Hwange Power Station on Wednesday evening.

In an update on the situation today, Zesa Holdings said the fire outbreak will result in load curtailment of up to 300MW at evening peak (between 4pm and 8:30pm).

“The fire, which broke out in the Unit 1 boiler room, caused damage to power cables and other equipment. However, we were able to isolate all systems in order to prevent potentially more serious damage.

“The fire lasted for 40 minutes and measures to manage further risk were implemented. Investigations on the extent of the damage caused by the fire are currently underway. There were no casualties arising from the fire,” Zesa said in the statement.

The fire broke out in the unit 1 boiler as a result of a leak in the diesel supply line. The power utility also said efforts were underway to restore services to optimum levels by bringing back Units 2 and 5 at the Power Station.

It urged all customers to use the available power sparingly.

Hwange Power Station, is the country’s largest thermal power producer with an installed capacity of 920MW. It was however, only producing 293MW, according to the power generation update released on Monday by the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC)- The Herald

Nation Mourns Business Tycoon Mahomed Mussa

The nation yesterday mourned the death of tycoon and major investor Mr Mahomed Mussa with the business community leading tributes for one of Zimbabwe’s largest wholesalers.

Mr Mussa died at his home in Harare in the early hours of yesterday, days before his 75th birthday.

He was buried on the same day in line with Muslim tradition.

Family members dispelled reports that the business mogul had died of Covid-19, saying he succumbed to natural causes related to old age.

Mr Mussa was the director and founder of the MM group, which incorporates wholesale operations, hardware shops, LP gas retailing, furniture and electrical appliances sales.

“It is with sadness that we announce the passing away of our beloved father Mahomed Mussa from this temporary life to the real life of the hereafter.

“Death was written and everything else is just an excuse. We should always be happy with the decree of Allah Ta’ala. May Allah Ta’ala forgive the deceased and raise his status,” the statement from the family read.

Mr Mussa’s business creation and development went beyond establishing a major complex of businesses.

He was also a major property investor who completely rebuilt and redeveloped a large number of complete city blocks centred on Guy Clutton Brock Avenue in the south of the city centre.

Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce president Dr Tinashe Manzungu described his death as a huge loss to the business fraternity.

“Today is a sad day as we mourn the death of a beacon in the business industry. He has played a big role and leaves unending footprints. Aspiring businesspeople always looked up to him and the way he operated which was devoid of unethical profiteering.

“It is unfortunate he dies at a time Zimbabwe is creating a conducive environment to make capital comfortable in this country. Established business leaders like Mussa are needed for resuscitation of our industries.

“Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends and his business partners,” said Dr Manzungu.

Employers Confederation of Zimbabwe president Dr Israel Murefu said Mr Mussa’s death was a big loss to their community.

“It is a sad loss, he played an important role even in supporting small and upcoming businesses. It is sad we are losing many influential people. My condolences to his family and associates,” said Dr Murefu.

Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries president Mr Henry Ruzvidzo said he hoped the business he founded would continue to thrive.

Zimbabwean-born leading global Islamic scholar Dr Mufti Ismail Menk said on Twitter: “Today we’ve lost one of the elders of the Muslim Community of Zimbabwe. Al Haji Mahomed Mussa was a legend, a well-known businessman and philanthropist. May Allah Almighty forgive his shortcomings and grant him Paradise.”- The Herald

Ambassador Nyikayaramba, who retired from the military in 2019 to join the diplomatic service was declared a national hero on Wednesday after the governing party unanimously agreed that the liberation war hero, whose Chimurenga name was Blessing Mohondo, deserved the highest honour.

Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe confirmed the development yesterday, saying the burial will be held under strict Covid-19 conditions as recommended by the World Health Organisation.

Teenager Drowns In Deserted Pit

A 15-year-old Pelandaba West boy drowned in an abandoned pit on Tuesday, a development which has sparked fury over the number of people who continue to drown in similar pits around Bulawayo.

Pulled out of the water

The pits are scattered all over in Bulawayo with some in Luveve, Pumula East, Mpopoma, Pelandaba West, Nkulumane, Cowdray Park, Matshobana and in Entumbane. The pits, which have claimed many lives, are a creation of illegal sand poachers.

As heavy rains continue to pound the city, the pits continue to deepen. While some have been a source of water for residents who have been going without water for five days a week, the pits have become death traps, especially for children.

The latest incident occurred on Tuesday when the boy identified as Keith Ncube was playing near the pit with his two friends. His uncle, Mr Sonny Mpofu, says Keith was looking for worms around the water body before he slipped into the pit.

His friends then went back home and notified his guardian about the incident. The boy was only retrieved yesterday after his body was found floating inside the abandoned pit.

Some of the open pits dotted around Pumula and Cowdray Park suburbs which pose a danger of drowning to residents

“We received news that Keith had fallen into the well and when we came some of the residents tried getting into the water but because the well has deepened, they came out without his body. We spent the whole of Wednesday trying to look for his body without any luck.

“His friends also claim that before he jumped into the water, he bade them farewell which leaves us wondering if his death is in any means associated with superstition,” said Mr Mpofu.

“His body was then spotted floating today with flies hovering around it and we had to notify police who retrieved him. We are saddened by this incident and we do not want to imagine what his mother is going through as she lives in South Africa.”

Ms Senzeni Ncube of Pelandaba West said this is the second child to drown within a space of two months. She appealed to the city council to fill up the pits as they pose a threat to other children who now fetch water from open pits due to shortage of water.

“The lockdown is also contributing to this because children are spending so much time at home as schools are closed. They tend to engage in dangerous activities like swimming in these abandoned pits,” said Mrs Ncube.

Mr Khumbulani Maphosa from the Matabeleland Institute of Human Rights said it is saddening to note that the abandoned pits have claimed another young life in the city. He said his organisation had tried to engage the Environmental Management Agency and the Bulawayo City Council a month ago to no avail.

His organisation cited the death of a 12-year-old girl who drowned in the same pit on December 8 last year.

In March 2020, a 12-year-old boy drowned in a sewer pit between Nketa 8 and Nkulumane 5 suburbs. Mr Maphosa said it was time Ema held the local authority accountable for the continued number of deaths being reported from the abandoned pits.

“I engaged council and Ema a month ago and sadly nothing has been done. In response, the council said they would attend the pits once resources are available. The pits are all over the city; Luveve, in Mpopoma, Pelandaba West, Nkulumane, Cowdray Park, Matshobane and in Entumbane suburbs,” said Mr Maphosa.

“Some of the pits were left by council and some by private sand companies and they have proved to be a human risk besides being a violation of environmental stewardship,” he said.

Efforts to get comment from council were fruitless as the mayor Councillor Solomon Mguni and his deputy Councillor Mlandu Ncube did not respond to phone calls.

The area’s Councillor Alderman Siboniso Khumalo said the council was working on getting resources to fill up the pits.

Some of the open pits dotted around Pumula and Cowdray Park suburbs which pose a danger of drowning to residents

He called on residents to accompany children whenever they go to fetch water from these pits to avoid such tragic accidents.

“I am pained by the loss of life which occurred within our community and sadly the only thing we can do now is warn members of the public to desist from leaving their children unattended in those areas. Resources permitting, council is going to work on closing those pits so that they don’t pose danger to our children and residents,” said Alderman Khumalo.

“We are in a water crisis and we understand that residents are making use of the water in those pits for watering their gardens, toilets and for washing. Therefore, they need to exercise extreme caution and ensure they do not let their children go unattended or unguided to save lives,” she said. -Chronicle

Marry Mubaiwa Heads To Supreme Court Over Passport

Marry Mubaiwa has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court challenging a High Court decision refusing to release her passport to enable her travel to South Africa for treatment.

She is facing a string of criminal charges including attempted murder, money laundering, fraud and assault.

The former super model wants to travel to South Africa urgently to seek medical treatment as her health has reportedly deteriorated. She is suffering from an ailment known as lymphoedema, which causes swelling of hands and legs.

On Wednesday, Mubaiwa filed her appeal at the superior court against the High Court decision dismissing her application for alteration of bail conditions.

She had sought the temporary release of her passport to be allowed to travel to SA for medical attention and relaxation of her reporting conditions during her absence from Zimbabwe.

But Justice Benjamin Chikowero dismissed Mubaiwa’s application.

In his ruling the judge also rejected Mubaiwa’s contention that there are no lymphoedema specialists in the country and held that her application contained some grey areas.

In addition, the court held that Mubaiwa failed to demonstrate that her condition had deteriorated and was in need of urgent treatment across the Limpopo to warrant alteration of her bail conditions.

In her appeal, through her lawyers, Mtetwa and Nyambirai, Mubaiwa insists that the variation of her bail conditions should be allowed, arguing that she is in constant pain, has grossly swollen feet, hands and large open wounds as detailed by her local doctor. -Herald

Madhuku To Chamisa: Come To Polad

National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) leader and constitutional law expert Professor Lovemore Madhuku has said the provision for authentic political dialogue is only through the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD).
He dismissed manoeuvres by churches and other pressure groups fronting the interest of the MDC-Alliance to dialogue with President Mnangagwa outside POLAD.

https://youtu.be/nHTCYD-pIFc

Prof Madhuku, who is also a member of the political actors’ caucus, said this during a press conference yesterday.

“Regarding political dialogue, our position as NCA is that, if you are a political party go to POLAD. POLAD is the only platform for political actors,” said Prof Madhuku.

“If you want to go and negotiate for power and so forth there is no place for that in this country. This country is not partitioned between two political parties.”

Prof Madhuku said other groups such as churches that are not political can be entertained in other structures set by President Mnangagwa.

“But if you are not a political actor like a political party, we support an all-stakeholders’ platform, where we can have continuous discussion, but that relates to those who are not political parties,” said Prof Madhuku. -Herald

Facts About Breast Cancer

The global cancer landscape is changing, according to WHO experts
, on the eve of World Cancer Day 2021.

Breast cancer has now overtaken lung cancer as the world’s mostly commonly-diagnosed cancer, according to statistics released by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in December 2020.

So on World Cancer Day, WHO will host the first of a series of consultations in order to establish a new global breast cancer initiative, which will launch later in 2021. This collaborative effort between WHO, IARC, the International Atomic Energy Agency and other multi-sectoral partners, will reduce deaths from breast cancer by promoting breast health, improving timely cancer detection and ensuring access to quality care.

WHO and the cancer community are responding with renewed urgency to address breast cancer and to respond to the growing cancer burden globally that is straining individuals, communities and health systems.

In the past two decades, the overall number of people diagnosed with cancer nearly doubled, from an estimated 10 million in 2000 to 19.3 million in 2020. Today, one in 5 people worldwide will develop cancer during their lifetime. Projections suggest that the number of people being diagnosed with cancer will increase still further in the coming years, and will be nearly 50% higher in 2040 than in 2020.

The number of deaths from cancer has also increased, from 6.2 million in 2000 to 10 million in 2020. More than one out of every six deaths is due to cancer.

While changes in lifestyle, such as unhealthy diets, insufficient physical activity, use of tobacco and harmful use of alcohol, have all contributed to the increasing cancer burden, a significant proportion can also be attributed to increasing longevity, as the risk of developing cancer increases with age. This reinforces the need to invest in both cancer prevention and cancer control, focusing on actionable cancers like breast, cervical and childhood cancers.

Late diagnosis and lack of access to treatment exacerbated by COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the problems of late-stage diagnosis and lack of access to treatment. These occur everywhere but particularly in low- and middle-income countries. In addition to having to cope with the disruption of services, people living with cancer are also at higher risk of severe COVID-19 illness and death.

A WHO survey conducted in 2020 indicated that treatment for cancer had been disrupted in more than 40% of countries surveyed during the pandemic. The findings of the survey have been backed up by published studies indicating that delays in diagnosis are common, while interruptions to and abandonment of therapy have increased significantly. Meanwhile, enrolment in clinical trials and research output have declined.

All stakeholders are working to respond. Some governments have been enabling their populations to seek cancer care safely. Health professionals have adapted treatment to meet the needs of their patients, including through the use of telemedicine, and civil society has supported patients by helping them coordinate their appointments and complete their treatment plans.

World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day, with its slogan “I can and I will”, is also an opportunity to show WHO’s commitment to other major global cancer programmes, on cervical cancer and childhood cancer.

The adoption of the Global strategy to accelerate the elimination of cervical cancer as a public health problem and its associated goals and targets by the World Health Assembly in 2020 has provided added momentum to cervical cancer efforts. Three targets have been set for 2030: 90% of girls fully vaccinated with the HPV vaccine; 70% of women screened; and 90% of women identified with cervical cancer receiving treatment.

Cancer is also a leading cause of death for children and adolescents, with an estimated 400 000 children diagnosed with cancer each year. On International Childhood Cancer Day, 15 February, WHO will be releasing a “how-to” guide for policy-makers and programme managers on strengthening childhood cancer programmes; a new assessment tool to facilitate harmonized data collection and to enable expedited, real-time interpretation of collected data on cancer among children; and an online community-of-practice information-sharing hub for childhood cancer.

Breast, cervical and childhood cancers all have a high chance of cure if diagnosed early and treated appropriately. This World Cancer Day, WHO is moving ahead with our partners around the world in efforts both to prevent and control cancer and also to provide support to all people living with cancer, wherever they live and whatever their circumstances.

Zimbabwe One Of The Worst Offenders On Clamping Down On Journalists

By A Correspondent- According to Human Right Watch (HRW), Zimbabwe is reportedly among the worst offenders when it comes to clamping down on journalists and freedom of the media during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Gerry Simpson, an associate director for crisis and conflict division at Human Rights Watch, Zimbabwe is among the 20 African countries that reportedly used the veil provided by the COVID-19 pandemic to clampdown on free media:

In Zimbabwe, we have documented a number of incidences over the last year. And our report references three of those. A journalist that was beaten at a checkpoint near a lockdown area.  We documented how a journalist was detained for nine weeks for his COVID reporting between July and November at various stages last year, and finally we have noted how Zimbabwe introduced the Public Health Order Act in March which threatened up 20 years in prison for fake news on public health matters.

Elasto Mugwadi, the head of the government-affiliated Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission told the HRW that they indeed received complaints of abuses:

There were a few complaints when these issues were being applied; the robust approach in enforcement by the police. So generally excessive enforcement. This is a continuous process; we are not stopping monitoring, we are still carrying on.

Malawi and Uganda are some of the countries that are also said to have clamped down on free media and free speech during the lockdown.-VOA

Typhoid, Cholera Outbreaks Imminent

By A Correspondent- Unattended burst sewer pipes in Harare’s high-density suburbs of Glen View and Budiriro have raised concern of a possible health hazard looming in the suburbs.

58 pipe bursts have been reported in Glen View alone while 79 were reported in Budiriro according to the publication.

Reports by the publication indicate that some of the wastewater is reportedly flowing towards community boreholes.

Community Water Alliance (CWA) spokesperson Christopher Gohori spoke to the publication and said the City of Harare must have a bigger budget for water and sewer pipe replacement:

In order to address this problem, there is need to elicit accountability and response from duty bearers on addressing burst water and sewage pipes. CWA calls for increased budget allocation in water and sewage pipe replacement and repairs in order to prevent deaths from water borne diseases like typhoid and cholera

City of Harare should focus on reducing non-revenue water or water leakages as a way of increasing revenue from water and it also helps in the implementation of handwashing with soap under running water as one of the COVID-19 prevention protocols.

Life In Jail For Chunga

By A Correspondent- A 41 year old Zimbabwean man believed to be part of a syndicate of armed robbers who have been terrorizing motorists along the N1 highway between Musina and Makhado towns in Limpopo province has been jailed for life.

Tarusenga Thomas Chunga was condemned to prison after a Musina Regional Court in the Vhembe District, convicted him on charges of murder, attempted murder, and armed robbery.

He was also sentenced to another six months for violating a section of the Immigration Act in that country.

Limpopo police spokesperson, Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said Chunga and his accomplices who are still at large had unleashed a reign of terror along the N1 between 2015 and 2017.

“He was arrested in 2017 in Mahwelereng area under the Waterberg District following a lengthy investigation by our detectives.

“Since then, he has been in remand prison and he failed to secure bail on numerous occasions until his conviction and sentencing on Wednesday,” said Col Ngoepe.

His modus operandi was to break into the homes of young women at night who stayed alone, raped, and robbed them of belongings such as cell phones.

Ntlwane had been arrested for raping an elderly woman (75), at a village around the Mecklenburg policing area on 16 April 2019.

The accused requested accommodation from the unsuspecting victim and later threatened and repeatedly raped her.-statemedia

  • Heavy downpours may reduce visibility and flood dangers become difficult to perceive during heavy rains

ACTIONS TO TAKE

MSD statement
  • The sunny morning skies may allow a few outdoor activities such as weeding, applying fertilizers or even hanging laundry, but remember: when Thunder Roars, it is best to be indoors!
  • Try to avoid isolated sited, trees, and even the kitchen area especially in rural setting. These are usually prone to lightning strikes. Stay Weather-Ready and Environment-Safe.
  • Avoid crossing flooded rivers and swollen streams whether on foot or in a vehicle.
  • Keep away from metal equipment and pipes, as these are prone to lightning strikes.
  • Do not ride at the back of an open truck or drive a tractor during a storm,
  • Avoid driving when visibility is poor, more so at night and during heavy rains (fortunately, curfew hours cover the bulk of this period under current lockdown measures.)
  • Ensure rooftops are strongly secured and intact as the potential of wind gust is high.

Can We Use Zumbani?

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | The World Health Organization (WHO) defines traditional medicine as “the sum total of the knowledge, skills, and practices based on the theories, beliefs, and experiences indigenous to different cultures, whether explicable or not, used in the maintenance of health as well as in the prevention, diagnosis, improvement or treatment of physical and mental illness”. But some people believe traditional medicine is contrasted with scientific medicine.

In this time of COVID Zimbabwe and indeed Africa has been gripped strongly with what we call Patriotic medical fever. This is when the call to use locally made medicine has become a national pride and not a scientific one. Indeed in most if not all local medicines there is indeed healing particles in them.

There is a general belief that Zumbani is our African wonder vaccine. Many people are using Zumbani as the all out medicine to heal Zumbani. The word moves fast and Zumbani has become a national vaccine for COVID 19. Zimbabweans are very believing people anything can pass as long as it gets support on media. Not long ago Chihuta was a bird of wonder thousands of Zimbabwean believers lost thousands of dollars on these birds in search of the healing properties. Believed to be in these birds.

Now with this pandemic People have been made to believe that Zumbani can heal COVID. BUT WHAT is ZUMBANI.
Common names: fever tea, lemon bush (English); koorsbossie, beukesbossie, lemoenbossie (Afrikaans); mutswane, umsutane (Swati); inzinziniba (Xhosa); umsuzwane, umswazi (Zulu); musukudu, bokhukhwane (Tswana)
Zumbani / umsuzwane as is locally known, is scientifically known as Lippia javanica (Burm. f) Spreng.

Lippia javanica is used for a wide variety of traditional uses. Based on literature, the most important traditional applications include its uses as herbal tea and ethnomedicinal applications for (in descending order of importance) colds, cough, fever or malaria, wounds, repelling mosquitos, diarrhoea, chest pains, bronchitis, and asthma. Zumbani as it is known in Zimbabwe has multi uses. It is taken again in treating Respiratory Problems; Gastrointestinal Diseases; Fever, Malaria, and Insect Repellent; Wounds, Injuries, Pain, and Skin Infections; Ethnoveterinary Uses; and Other Uses.
Lippia javanica (ZUMBANI)occurs naturally in central, eastern, and southern Africa and has also been recorded in the tropical Indian subcontinent. The potential of Zumbani as herbal or recreational tea and herbal medicine and its associated phytochemistry and biological properties are reviewed. The extensive literature survey revealed that Zumbani is used as herbal tea and has ethnomedicinal applications such as in colds, cough, fever, malaria, wounds, diarrhoea, chest pains, bronchitis, and asthma. Multiple classes of phytochemicals including volatile and nonvolatile secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, amino acids, flavonoids, iridoids, and triterpenes as well as several minerals have been identified from L. javanica (Zumbani)Scientific studies on L. javanica indicate that it has a wide range of pharmacological activities which include anticancer, antiamoebic, antidiabetic, antimalarial, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiplasmodial, and pesticidal effects. Although many of the traditional uses of L. javanica have been validated by phytochemical and pharmacological studies, there are still some gaps where current knowledge could be improved. Lippia javanica is popular as both herbal and recreational tea, but there is need for more precise studies to evaluate the safety and clinical value of its main active crude and pure compounds and to clarify their mechanisms of action.

The danger Zimbabwe is getting into now is to let the money mongers make a huge profit from Zumbani by overeating its usefulness against COVID 19. Zumbani can heal effectively some COVID symptoms but can not be used as full and final treatment of COVID 19.

Lippia javanica (Burm.f.) Spreng. (Verbenaceae) (Zumbani)has a long history of traditional uses in tropical Africa as indigenous herbal tea or tisane refreshing beverage, or food additive based on its perceived health and medicinal properties. Lippia javanica (Zumbani)is rich in volatile oil, particularly caryophyllene, carvone, ipsenone, ipsdienone, limonene, linalool, myrcene, myrcenone, ocimenone, p-cymene, piperitenone, sabinene, and tagetenone Research by Viljoen revealed that the essential oil profiles of L. javanica are characterized by inter- and intraspecies variations because they are produced by different metabolic pathways. Using cluster analysis, Viljoen
identified five chemotypes of L. javanica in South Africa and Swaziland, myrcenone-rich type (36–62%), carvone-rich type (61–73%), piperitenone-rich type (32–48%), ipsdienone-rich type (42–61%), and linalool-rich type (>65%). The relative proportion of the chemical constituents of L. javanica essential oil is important as this determines the biological properties of the species chemotypes. So before we take this as COVID 19 as the wonder vaccine let us understand what exactly is this COVID 2019. It is a new infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that belongs to the coronavirus family. The first case was reported in December 2019, and the disease has become a pandemic. Impaired immune regulation is one of the factors that play a role in its pathogenesis and results in poor outcomes of COVID-19 patients. There have been many studies with drug candidates used as antivirals or immunomodulators. However, the results of these investigations showed that the drug candidates were not significantly effective against the disease. Meanwhile, people believe that consuming herbal immunomodulators can prevent or even cure COVID-19. Unfortunately, specific preclinical and clinical trials to evaluate the effects of herbal immunoregulators have not been conducted. Certain natural compounds might be effective for the treatment of COVID-19 based on general concepts from previous experiments. For the avid herb gardener with an interest in medicinal plants Lippia javanica with its dense creamy white, flower heads and aroma is a good candidate.

This Zumbani flower is one to two metres high woody shrub stands erect and is multi-stemmed. The stems have a square appearance when looked at in cross-section. The leaves are hairy with noticeable veins and when crushed gives off a strong lemon-like smell. It is said to be one of the most aromatic of Zimbabwe’s indigenous shrubs. The small cream flowers can be found on the shrub from summer to autumn in some areas and in others are produced all year. These flowers are arranged in dense, rounded flower heads. The fruit are rather inconspicuous, small and dry.

It grows in open veld, in the bush, as well as on forest margins.

Derivation of name and historical aspects
The family Verbenaceae is a family of herbs and shrubs or small trees often with aromatic leaves. There are 36 genera and approximately 1035 species in tropical and subtropical regions, with just a few representatives in temperate areas. There are 8 genera and approximately 40 species in Southern Africa. There are 6 indigenous species of Lippia in South Africa.
Lippia was named after Augustin Lippi 1678- 1701, an Italian traveller and natural historian who was killed in Abysinnia. This plant also occurs in Java, hence the epiphet javanica, meaning ‘from Java’.
Ecology
It is possible that its aromatic leaves protect this plant as animals do not usually browse it, except in exceptional circumstances.
Uses
This plant is well known medicinally to many African people and to many avid herbalists and herb gardeners.
Different parts (the leaves, twigs and occasionally the roots) of the plant are used for different reasons. The Xhosa people are known to drink it in a weak infusion as a tea substitute and in a stronger infusion for the treatment of coughs, colds and bronchial problems in general. They use the leaves and stem and drink it with milk or water. In addition the Xhosa people also use Lippia javanica for the disinfection of meat that has been infected with anthryax.
This herb is also said to be affective against fever, especially in cases of malaria, influenza, measles, and as a prophylactic against lung infections. In these cases Lippia javanica is often mixed with another herb Artemisia afra.
The smoke from the herb has proven to be affective, if inhaled, against asthma, chronic coughs and pleurisy. The leaves and stems are burned.
Skin disorders, such as heat rash and other rashes, as well as scratches, stings and bites can also be treated. Here the tea is usually cooled and then applied like a lotion. Even lice and scabies can be treated with it.
Apart from its medicinal uses Lippia javanica is also used ritually in a cleansing ceremony when someone has been in contact with a corpse and apparently for protection against dogs, crocodiles and lightning. The Masai make a red ointment from it, which is used to decorate their bodies.

For those gardeners who are pot-pourri lovers and are looking for a good cupboard freshener, then Lemon bush is the perfect addition to your bouquet. Some people even use it to make perfume.
There may be a commercial purpose for a volatile oil that is produced by Lippia javanica. Apparently it repels and controls Bark Beetles from the genus Ips who can become a plant pest.

We should remember that
Current recommendations for the self-management of SARS-Cov-2 disease (COVID-19) include self-isolation, rest, hydration, and the use of NSAID in case of high fever only. It is expected that many patients will add other symptomatic/adjuvant treatments, such as herbal medicines like ZUMBANI.
A novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV2) outbreak causes viral pneumonia that is extremely infectious and pathogenic. The Chinese government proposes that both Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medicine can be used in combination to treat pneumonia caused by SARS-CoV2, and TCM effectively provides continuous prevention and treatment.
On April 14, 2020, a Chinese official announced at a press conference that indications of three patent herbal drugs were approved to be expanded to include COVID-19 symptoms. The official claimed the patent herbal drugs can effectively relieve symptoms, such as fever, cough, and fatigue, and reduce the probability of patients developing severe conditions, but without giving further details. So far, no high-quality, rigorously peer-reviewed clinical trials of herbal drugs such as Zumbani have been reported in internationally recognised journals.

The approvals, of Zumbani in Zimbabwe is not official but its based on cultural and traditional approval not in-vitro investigations and anecdotal clinical data. This leads to several worrisome consequences.
The best interest of general Zimbabwean population must be considered. Those promoting Zumbani must have safety as the top priority. Advocates argue that herbal drugs are widely used and safe, but the truth is that all drugs carry risks. Without proper scientific testing ZUMBANI can be a danger to society. Although these patent herbal drugs have been used clinically for several years, when we apply them to a novel disease like COVID-19, especially in combination with other antivirals, antibiotics, and immune suppressants, the safety should be cautiously evaluated.
Again more evidence is required through controlled clinical trials to support the efficacy of these herbal drugs. Many traditional medicine practitioners believe that herbal remedies cannot be tested because they are tailored to each individual’s syndromes. This argument is simply not convincing. Because the patent herbal drugs are produced in advance of any treatment and their composition is fixed, clinical endpoints including mortality, time to clinical improvement, and number of days in an intensive care unit can be used to evaluate the efficacy of the herbal drugs for COVID-19. Standardised trials might have methodological challenges, consuming time and effort, but that should not be the reason for lowering safety and efficacy standards. Thousands of years of usage and faith cannot be taken as evidence for efficacy of traditional herbs.
Third, the basic molecular mechanism is obscure. Zumbani has been shown to have wide-spectrum antiviral effects and anti-inflammatory activities, but the active ingredients and the underlying mechanism of action are unknown. Herbal drugs usually contain many active ingredients, and it is important to better understand which ingredients are functional, and how they work. Historical use of Zumbani cannot guarantee safety and efficacy.
Finally, the public can easily purchase herbal drugs without a doctor’s prescription. Driven by the claim that Zumbani can effectively treat COVID-19, some patients with flu symptoms who fear quarantine measures are likely to self-medicate with Zumbani and avoid going to hospital, thus delaying the proper diagnosis and treatment of the disease, and hampering the government’s testing, tracing, and quarantining efforts.
In the midst of this savage pandemic rumours started circulating on social media suggested that a ZUMBANI , is used routinely in traditional medicine to treat influenza and the common cold, helps ward off or even cure COVID-19. Millions of people nationwide crowded into BUSHES and places where herbal drugs are sold to buy the Zumbani as a just-in-case remedy.
The current COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented challenge for the Zimbabwean Government and the general public. Doctors and researchers are desperately seeking a proven cure for it. When the conventional drugs are not as effective as expected, screening potential active components from traditional herbal medicine is a viable strategy that should not be dismissed.

Our ministry of health must give more attention to testing traditional herbal medicine for the treatment of COVID-19, We must be cautious to avoid rushed judgements. A rushed judgment without sufficient scientific evidence should be cautioned against. Those promoting Zumbani giving people false hope must be discouraged.
Given the formidable morbidity and mortality of COVID-19, it is understandable to see emergency use of unproven drugs, but the approval of a new indication for herbal drugs should still build on evidence.
This COVID must prompt our Government to invest huge sums of money to promote the modernisation and standardisation of traditional medicine, carrying out sustainable basic and clinical research to get international recognition, but the rushed approval seems to be a backward step. The attempt to develop rigorously tested drugs from traditional herbal medicine should not be given up. It is the only way to protect our vulnerable patients.
The ministry of Health must provide a benefits/risks assessment of selected herbal medicines traditionally indicated for “respiratory diseases” within the current frame of the COVID-19 pandemic as an adjuvant treatment.
Zumbani is indeed a wonder plant as it is popularly known for several beneficial nutritional and medicinal components which make the plant both food and medicine.
“Plants that are both nutritional and medicinal are called nutraceuticals. Thus, zumbani may qualify as both a recreational and a medicinal caffeine free tea.”
zumbani is a good source of phenolic compounds which act as antioxidants when consumed.
The types of antioxidants which are found in zumbani are very useful in mopping out toxic chemicals (radicals) which naturally accumulate in the body when it is stressed out by a fever, disease, overthinking or even intense physical exercise.
It has been proved scientifically in the laboratory that zumbani has higher antioxidant potential than the popular commercial brand Rooibos™️ which is on the shelves.
There are multiple classes of phytochemicals found in zumbani which include flavonoids, alkaloids, iridoids and essential oils which contribute to its medicinal properties.
“Scientific reviews carried out so far indicate that the plant has a wide range of pharmacological activities, which include antioxidant, antidiabetic, antimalarial, antiplasmodial and pesticidal effects. “
Zumbani has nutritional properties such as amino acids and minerals such as zinc.
Dr Bhebhe has described Zumbani “as fever tea because it has been effectively used as an ethnomedicinal cure for fevers and chest related ailments such as sore throats, coughs, bronchitis, sinuses, pneumonia and asthma. Zimbabweans in most cases use zumbani either as dried or fresh leaves brewed into an herbal tea / tisane and drunk as is or in some cases with sugar or honey to taste. It is more beneficial to drink without milk as the milk proteins and fats may mask some of the health beneficial phytochemicals. “
There are also some volatile medicinal phytochemicals found in the plant which explains why it is has also been effectively used for steaming to clear out nasal passages.

In communal areas where it grows abundantly, it is also commonly used as a mosquito repellent and for treating skin infections because of its antimicrobial properties.
In some parts of Zimbabwe the leaf ointment is rubbed on the chest and abdomen as remedy for pneumonia.
So far no comprehensive clinical study has been published to confirm zumbani as a solution to the raging corona virus pandemic.

Most Zimbabweans who are using it have latched their hopes on the plant because of its effective respiratory healing properties which have stood the test of time in ethno medicine.
Dr Bhebhe warned that
“It would however be prudent for Zimbabwean scientists to conduct clinical studies to vindicate circulating claims about the plant’s potential to treat or reduce the onset of corona virus disease 2019. While there is still a need to unravel more magical properties of the plant, medical scientists and agronomists must form collaborative linkages with both local and international partners in order to grow a viable nutraceuticals industry in the country.” Dr Michael Bhebhe is a Zimbabwean Scientist and researcher.
We however must remember that
Due to the emergence of the propagation of the disease, our health system and world wide Health Systems have become overloaded, even having sufficient diagnostic capacity and hospital facilities to handle such an outbreak. In the most vulnerable regions, the COVID-19 epidemic effectively paralyzes health systems at the expense of primary health care Some measures, such as lock-down of communities, social distancing, and quarantine-type for those suspected to be infected can, at least in part, slow the COVID-19 spread. However, these measures are palliative, and people tend to ignore them after a few days of isolation, mainly those in disadvantaged and vulnerable communities.
Importantly, at this stage, we must start to build up an evidence-base for the best strategy to treat, mitigate, and prevent the diseases. Currently, none of the approaches used is evidence-based.
In the worldwide search for a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, news about “alternative remedies against COVID” have been disseminated the evidence-base for such treatments is often limited if not non-existent. However, often strong, unsubstantiated claims are made about the pros and cons of herbal medicines, which will also result both in false hopes or strong fears of those at risk or ill with COVID 19.

Conclusion and Recommendation
Based on the situation on the ground we must conclude that ZUMBANI might have the capabilities to regulate the production and release of proinflammatory cytokines, interfere with the development of the virus in host cells, and modify certain molecular pathways related to the RAA system. Herbal agents might be useful as treatments to fight COVID-19. Finally, a suggestion for the patients is that it is still not recommended to use ZUMBANI to prevent COVID-19 or to heal the disease without the specific advice or under the direct supervision of a clinician. A suggestion for the clinician is that administration of these herbal medicines must be given carefully to patients, even if they are healthy. This is because various inconsistent data have been reported about these agents. Thus, there is a possibility that these treatments might be associated with the induction of harmful effects. In addition, preclinical and clinical trial evaluations of these herbal agents for COVID-19 have not specifically been conducted, so further investigations related to this are warranted.

For a ZUMBANI to be recommended as adjuvant therapy for respiratory diseases in the context of COVID-19, it must be determined that the treatment is effective and that its expected benefits outweigh its potential risks to patients. This assessment must also be informed by a number of other factors, including the severity of the underlying condition and how well patients’ medical needs are addressed by currently available therapies The decision must reflects current applicable laws, regulations, and healthcare recommendations, taking into consideration the uncertainty associated with COVID-19.

We must always remember that Infectious diseases are the demons with which human beings have been fighting since the beginning of human history. Several epidemics have occurred in the history of Zimbabwe. But, fortunately, no large numbers of casualties have occurred, due to the prevalence of Traditional Medicine.

We must remember that Zumbani is used as a good luck charm, to treat persons experiencing bad dreams, to ward off evil spirits, to protect one from lightening, and to protect the home. In Zimbabwe, Zumbani L javanica leaves are prepared as an infusion to treat persons experiencing nightmares In both South Africa and Zimbabwe, evil spirits are cleansed by washing the body of an affected person by leaf infusion of Zumbani L. javanica. In Swaziland, 50 g leaves of L. javanica and C. molle are ground into a powder and 5 litres of water is added and face and hands are washed to remove bad luck when exposed to a corpse. In South Africa, the whole plant is placed on a patient’s bed after the circumcision ceremony to prevent odours and freshen surrounding air. A mixture of Zumbani L. javanica leaves and roots is used to clean tools and hands before and after funerals, the stems and leaves are used as brooms to sweep grave sites, and the entire plant is also used when coming from the mortuary to remove bad spirits. The corpse is washed with Zumbani L. javanica infusion after death to prevent odours forming or if the corpse has an odour, women place pieces of Zumbani L. javanica in the nostrils of the corpse and sweep the room with twigs where the person was sleeping. In KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, if the meat started to smell it will be boiled with Zumbani L. javanica leaves to take away the smell. The Xhosa people in the Eastern Cape province, South Africa, use Zumbani L. javanica leaves for the disinfection of meat that has been infected with anthrax. In KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, leaves are sprinkled in toilets to prevent odours Leaves of Zumbani L. javanica are sprinkled in houses for pleasant smell in the Limpopo province, South Africa [and Kenya. In KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, it is believed that a person can repel snakes by placing a small stem with leaves on his or her head. In Malawi, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe, people showing sign of mental disorder, madness, or hysterical outbursts are required to wash their bodies with leaf infusions

With all these extra use Zumbani becomes a wonder plant. However it needs to be interrogated further in the laboratory to check for the side effects. It must be made clear that Zumbani alone is not the final cure of COVID even though it has properties which can treat some of the symptoms of the COVID 19. Despite having ZUMBANI you must follow the rules to prevent the virus from infecting you. Mask up and sanitise.

Billiat To Stay At Kaizer Chiefs- Agent

Khama Billiat’s agent Godfrey ‘Vokal’ Bakasa has has responded to reports linking the Warriors star to Egyptian sides Al Ahly, Zamalek and Pyramids.

Blliat’s contract at Kaizer Chiefs runs out at the end of the current season, though the Soweto giants have an option to extend it by another season but it has been widely reported that the three Egyptian clubs are interested in the diminutive winger.

Responding to the claims, Bakasa said if the clubs indeed want the player as per reports, then they will approach Kaizer Chiefs, not his management, since Billiat still has a running contract with the club.

“Khama still has a running contract with Kaizer Chiefs,” Bakasa told South African publication KickOff.

“So any interest right now is going to be made through Kaizer Chiefs, or are made through Kaizer Chiefs. So I can’t really confirm that question [if it’s true that Zamalek and Al Ahly are interested].”

“I think both parties right now are really looking into getting Khama fit so that he plays the remaining games and if there are negotiations being made, it will be announced in due course,” added Bakasa.- Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

Cancer Cases Continue To Rise Globally

Mines Minister Hauled To Court By Former Herald Editor

By A Correspondent- Mines minister Winston Chitando has been dragged to court by former Herald newspaper editor Caesar Zvayi and his business partner Fidelity Printers and Refiners (Pvt) Ltd, a government-owned entity, after kicking the two out of a gold mining claim in Kwekwe.

The minister repossessed Mirage 3 Mine without explanation or notice in June last year – seemingly over arrears – according to the petitioners, and reallocated it to one Jonah Nyevera.

Zvayi’s company, Highway Holdings, is in partnership with Fidelity Printers, the main plaintiff.

In an urgent High Court application citing Chitando in his official capacity, Fidelity general manager Francis Kunaka argues that the seizure was unlawful and should, therefore, be rescinded.

Also cited as second and third respondents are Midlands provincial mining director and Nyevera, respectively.

Kunaka says while the minister was said to have withdrawn their mining rights in June 2020, his company only became aware of the “adverse” development in January 2021, after inquiring about its arrears over the property.

“The decision by the first and second respondents to forfeit the applicant’s mining claim is invalid. It is palpably arbitrary and violates every known procedure intended to ensure fairness, transparency, and justice,” Kunaka said in a founding affidavit filed on behalf of the company.

“On 8 January 2021, the applicant addressed a letter to the first and second respondents seeking to be informed of any arrears in respect of statutory payments over a claim that it owns.

“The applicant has never received a demand for payment of anything from the respondents or notice that failure to make such payments could have adverse consequences. Had such notice been received, the applicant would have promptly acted to secure its interests,” Kunaka argues.

“Had the applicant not sought to put its house in order, it would still be in blissful ignorance of the decisions made against it.”

A letter from the minister to Fidelity dated 11 January 2021 does not give detailed reasons behind the decision to forfeit the mining claim, only making reference to statutory provisions and leaving it to the applicant to surmise the reasons, Kunaka charged.

Minister Chitando has yet to respond.

Fidelity Printers is also seeking an order interdicting and restraining Nyevero from entering the disputed mining premises or disturbing operations.

Kunaka accused the new owner of deploying “hooligans” and “hired criminals” to the mine where they “gave an illegal oral notice of eviction” without a court order.

But in his notice of opposition, Nyevera argued that he was allocated the mine after the expiry of Fidelity Printers’ mining rights and denied ever hiring thugs to evict the company.

“I was issued with special grant after having applied for it sometime in July 2020. I duly paid all the statutory fees required and satisfied all the statutory obligations,” he said.

Nyevera submitted that he and his business partners visited the mining site in peace, only “armed with the relevant mining papers.”

“There was no need for me to threaten anyone, I have legitimate papers to be on the mining site. I followed due process from July 2020 to February 2021 when the special grant was issued,” he countered.

“If anything I should be the one seeking an order to stop the illegal mining operations on the basis that gold is a finite resource which can be depleted.”

The respondent also questioned Fidelity’s right to sue, arguing “the applicant avers that it sold the mining area to Caesar Zvayi. Caesar Zvayi is the one in occupation of the area. After forfeiture, the applicant lost the locas standi to sue in this matter especially on an urgent basis.”

“The applicant cannot sue in the manner it has done. At the very least, Caesar Zvayi could stand a better chance of this scrutiny. I, therefore, urge the court to dismiss the application on this further ground.”

The matter is yet to be heard.

Chinese Quartet Injured In Clash With Makorokoza

By A Correspondent- Four Chinese nationals working under the controversial Zhong Jian mining company sustained severe injuries this week after they were attacked by artisanal gold miners over mining rights dispute.

The incident occurred at Premier Estates, a gold-rich area in Mutasa.

One of the Chinese is reported to have sustained broken ribs while the other one lost a finger as he tried to block his face from a shovel attack.

The irate artisanal miners, popularly known as Makorokoza, are reported to have used an assortment of mining tools including crowbars, picks and shovels to attack the Chinese nationals.

A local environmental rights group Centre for Natural Resources Governance (CNRG) confirmed the incident and said the condition of the two other Chinese nationals was unknown.

In a statement, CNRG said the dispute arose when the artisanal miners, working in a tunnel on a gold claim owned by one Zimunya and were approached by the Chinese nationals who wanted the fill the pit using an excavator.

The Chinese are reported to have told the artisanal miners to leave as they had a permit to mine at Premier Estates.

“This angered the artisanal miners who called for a back-up from their colleagues working along Mutare River and attacked the Chinese miners,” CNRG.

The artisanal miners, however, spared the excavator driver who is a Zimbabwean.

Police details were called from Penhalonga but when they arrived, the artisanal miners had fled. However, six people were arrested in connection with the incident before they granted were $3 000 bail each at the local magistrates’ court.

CNRG said it does not condone any form of violence as a solution, but called on the responsible authorities to find an amicable solution to the growing violence and conflicts within the extractive industries, particularly among small scale miners and artisanal miners.

“The incident at Premier indicates the growing tension between Zimbabwean citizens and Chinese nationals who are viewed as operating above the law and with impunity. The government has turned a blind eye on conflicts in the mining sector. The conflicts can be attributed to government’s lack of transparency in granting mine titles,” said CNRG.

It also urged the government to investigate the issue of double allocation mining claims by the mines ministry.

“We called on government to enforce the law and come up with innovative programmes to manage farm-miner conflicts as well as conflicts between artisanal miners and small scale miners. It is evident that multitudes of citizens are turning to artisanal mining for a living and government ought to regularise artisanal mining to avoid escalation of these conflicts with small scale miners,” said CNRG.

The same Chinese mining company, Zhong Jian, was last November at the centre of controversy when it reportedly used an excavator to fill a mine shaft where scores of artisanal miners where working under.

Only two bodies were recovered and the search was abandoned after the company’s general manager Yancey Feng said he wanted evidence there were 10 people missing from the nearby community.

It still remains unclear how many artisanal miners were underground when the shaft collapsed last year.

Soldier, Trio Nabbed Over Ivory

By A Correspondent- A serving member of the Zimbabwe National Army based at Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks and three accomplices were yesterday remanded in custody by Harare magistrate Barbara Mateko for illegal possession of ivory worth US$12 480.

Joseph Mubaiwa (35) of Magama Tongogara Barracks appeared in court together with Quidiance Rundofa, William Manager and Musekiwa Ruzvidzo.

It is alleged that on February 8 this year at around 7:30am, detectives from CID Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit received information that the four men were in possession of ivory at Dan Bismark Sports Club, Arcadia, driving a Mercedes Benz and were looking for buyers.

Armed with the information, detectives proceeded to the scene where they carried surveillance and observed their car parked in the open space near Dan Bismark Sports Club.

The State alleges the detectives observed Mubaiwa and Rundofa showing Manager and Ruzvidzo four sacks which contained elephant tusks whilst standing outside the vehicle.

The four allegedly went inside the vehicle and showed each other another sack of ivory which was in the rear seat.

The detectives allegedly closed in and blocked the Mercedes Benz.

The accused persons allegedly bolted out of the vehicle and ran in different directions. Detectives fired warning shots in the air but accused persons continued running until Rundofa, Manager and Ruzvidzo were arrested while Mubaiwa managed to escape.

The detectives recovered 10 elephant tusks in the boot, nine in another brown sack and two on the rear seat. Mubaiwa was later located and arrested. The accused persons failed to produce licences for the ivory.

The tusks weighed 73,415kg.-newsday

“How Does A Puppet Dialogue With Its Master”

By Patrick Guramatunhu- MDC A is dismissing Douglas Mwonzora’s call for national political dialogue, involving MDC-T, MDC A and Zanu PF as the leading player, as a waste of time.

”Well, you have no dispute with Zanu-PF that requires anything that can be sensibly called national dialogue,” Fadzayi Mahere, MDC A spokesperson counted.

“You’re in constant communication with Zanu-PF as you plot to usurp the will of the people. So what dialogue do you now seek?

“How does a puppet dialogue with its puppet master.”

This is just a nonsensical argument comparable to the garbage we have often heard from former US President Donald Trump’s lawyers!

Mwonzora, Mudzuri and many members now in the Mwonzora led MDC-T factions were in the MDC A camp together with Chamisa, Biti, etc. right up to the March 2020 Supreme Court ruling confirmed an earlier High Court ruling that Chamisa’s seizure of the party’s leadership following Morgan Tsvangirai’s death was illegal.

If the purpose of the national dialogue is to resolve the Mnangagwa legitimacy then Mwonzora and company have as much right to a meaningful say in the matter as Chamisa, Biti and all those who have remained in MDC A. The decision to challenge presidential result and the Constitutional Court ruling declaring Mnangagwa the winner was made by MDC A members way before the March 2020 split.

Besides, the legitimacy question would have never even arisen is MDC leaders, from both MDC A and MDC-T faction divide, had implemented the democratic reforms, especially during the 2008 to 2013 GNU when they had the golden opportunity to do so. And, as if selling out on reforms was not bad enough, they all participating in the flawed and illegal July 2018 elections KNOWING fully well that doing so would give Zanu PF legitimacy!

“The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious – withdraw from the (2013) elections,” wrote David Coltart, MDC A Treasurer General, in his book, The Struggle Continues 50 years of Tyranny in Zimbabwe.

“The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”

The MDC A was the coalition Coltart said was missing before the 2013 elections. As we know, they still failed to “do the obvious – withdraw from the 2018 elections”!

Of course, it is political opportunism and grandstanding on the part of Nelson Chamisa to be wittering about Mnangagwa’s “lack of legitimacy” when he knew MDC A’s participation in the flawed election would give Zanu PF legitimacy.

“MDC A has stringent measures to stop Zanu PF rigging the elections!” boasted Nelson Chamisa, before the 2018 elections.

The world is sick and tired of politicians who participate in flawed election processes, claiming they can win rigged elections, only to complain afterwards of “stolen elections.”

“Senator Mwonzora, for dialogue to work, the parties involved must have genuine political capital,” chipped in Alex Magaisa, Morgan Tsvangirai’s Chief Legal Advisor during the 2008 to 2013 GNU.

“That’s why Lancaster House worked in 1979 while the Smith-Muzorewa show in 1978 flopped. Lancaster was genuine, while the Internal Settlement was Smith’s marionette show.”

Well Morgan Tsvangirai certainly had “political capital” going into the 2008 to 2013 GNU because he had 73% of the popular vote in the March 2008 vote, according to Robert Mugabe’s Freudian slip.

The primary task of the 2008 GNU was to implement the raft of democratic reforms designed to stop the blatant cheating that enabled Zanu PF to whittle down Tsvangirai’s 73% to 47% to force the run-off. And to end the wanton violence to punish the voters for rejecting Mugabe and Zanu PF in the early vote. Mugabe had 84% of the vote in the run-off.

As we know, Tsvangirai and his MDC friends failed to implement even one reform in 5 years of the GNU. Mugabe was able to bribe the MDC leaders, including the Chief Legal Advisor, with the trappings of high office and, with their snouts in the feeding trough, they completely forgot about the reforms.

“Incapacitation Of Lecturers Prejudicial To Students’ Learning”: ZEGU Students

Lecturers at ZAOGA owned Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University (ZEGU) have stopped conducting online lectures demanding salaries and COVID-19 allowances equivalent to the ones paid State run Universities.

A lecturer who spoke to 263Chat on condition of anonymity said they have stopped conducting lectures owing to poor remuneration and dishonesty from authorities at the institution

“We are fed up with the administration, they are not honouring on their promises. Last year we embarked on a similar strike and we had three meetings that culminated in our salaries being pegged equivalent to our colleagues at State Universities,” said the lecturer.
The lecturer said they have tried everything to have their grievances addressed by the University’s Chancellor and founder Professor Ezekiel Guti and they have been hitting the brick wall.

“We have tried to engage the administration but without any success and we have also written to the Chancellor Prof. Guti but it seems our letters are not reaching him. We feel that someone is blocking our efforts to reach the Chancellor,” he said.

The industrial action has disadvantaged online lectures prompting students to petition the institution’s Registrar. In a petition gleaned by 263Chat, SRC secretary general Takudzwa Mukove pleaded with the ZEGU authorities to reward the striking lecturers.

“Reference is made to the notice of industrial action which was served to you by ZEGU Lectures this year. In my capacity as the undersigned and as a student, we feel the strong chains of incapacitation that your administration has caused to our beloved Lecturers, depriving them of the means and motivation to discharge their duties efficiently.

“You have tied a heavy albatross around their necks and the resultant effect is injurious to student learning. From whence shall we drink, when our fountains of knowledge are drained dry? There is need for expediency in addressing Lecturers’ grievances to ameliorate the status of the institution gradually inclining into disrepute. We are cognisant of your Agreement with Lecturers in 2020 wherein you undertook to equate their salaries with those serving in state universities.

“You had a noble idea of cushioning them from the intense heatwave of the crippling economy exacerbated by daily price skyrocketing. We stand solid and in solidarity to support the Lecturer cause. For Christ’s sake, invoke your Christian values to see to it that he who works should be rewarded accordingly.” read Mukove’s letter.

He added “That is the ration aloof your existence as administrators to attend to genuine issues that threaten the credibility of the institution. We also further and politely advise that if the management remain mum and antagonistic to the cause, like they usually do, resulting in any deprivation of our Academic interests, surely and obviously do expect an organised democratic response from all angles in the soonest time. Acknowledge by acting accordingly with expediency and in good faith.”

Efforts to get a comment from ZEGU Deputy Registrar, Ms Mukosi were unsuccessful as her mobile number was continuously engaged.

Duo In Soup For Beating Up Neigbourhood Watch Officers

By A Correspondent- Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the assault of neighborhood watch committee officers in Chikanga, Mutare, after the attack went viral on social media last week.

Stanely Chifamata, 26, and Aaron Samusodza, 27, were taken into custody on Wednesday, police said in a Twitter statement, adding that “the suspects challenged the complainants, resulting in the scuffle which ended up involving members of the public.”

Officers launched a manhunt following the surfacing of a widely-circulated 45-second video that showed several suspects attacking and exchanging blows with the uniformed officers.

While the motive remains unclear, the video starts off with an officer manhandling a suspect in a water trench before another suspect arrives and takes a swing at the law enforcement agent.

A second officer emerges from a swelling crowd and rushes to his colleagues’ rescue, kicking the second suspect who tumbles into the drainage.

The officer quickly gets a backlash with several suspects also shoving him into the water trench.

Meanwhile, the first suspect appears to have subjugated the first officer, hitting him in the head while he sits. But the officer springs up and appears to turn the tables before the video ends.

Rural Teachers Raise The Flag On Poor Working Conditions

ZIMBABWE Rural Teachers’Union (ZRTU) has bemoaned deteriorating working conditions its members were exposed to during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an interview with NewsDay, ZRTU national co-ordinator Wonder Nyapokoto said rural teachers were being forced to work under harsh conditions.

“The rural school is under-resourced. Most children do not pay the little levies asked of them since their parents are indigent,” he said.

“Schools lack textbooks, sufficient syllabi. In short, the rural school operates, even under ‘normal’ circumstances, with grossly inadequate necessary materials.”

Nyapokoto said due to the resurgence of the COVID-19 and the resultant lockdown, the situation had become dire.

“Enter COVID-19. The dire situation becomes untenable. In most rural schools, water is inadequate or 4km away,” he said, adding: “Schools were asked to find masks for learners, but then the money will not be available. What is supplied is far too short of the requirements, hence, the assertion that rural schools are discriminated against.”

Nyapokoto said personal protective equipment was inadequate among other necessities in the fight against COVID-19.

“Water is not readily available. Sanitisers are not enough. Schools get only one thermometer and can’t afford to repair it if it breaks down,” he said.

Progressive Teachers’ Union president Takavafira Zhou said on a broader perspective, the working conditions of teachers from the urban areas to the periphery were dire.

“The working conditions of teachers are bad in all areas but particularly worse in remote areas where parents no longer see the value of education, for example in areas such as Chiredzi, Masvingo and Gokwe, among others,” Zhou said.

“The conditions of the teacher are so arid and rigid that they are demotivated to carry on with their teaching duties. The situation is terrible; the economy is not on a sound footing that teachers can barely pay their utility bills,” he said.

Zhou said there was urgent need for the government to introduce measures to ensure that teachers were cushioned.

“Government should introduce a fund to cover remote schools in terms of operations so that they can operate on the same wave length and standards as others,” he said.

“Government should also give out more incentives to teachers working in remote areas so as to avoid a high turnover where they would be requesting transfers after failing to adjust to the environment.”

Presidential spokesperson George Charamba last week accused rural teachers of causing the high failure rate in the 2020 Zimbabwe School Examinations Council Grade Seven results released last week-newsday

South Africa Set to Re-Open Beitbridge Border Post

By A Correspondent| South Africa is planning to re-open its land borders on January 15 with plans in place to avoid a repeat of the December congestion, the Border Management Agency (BMA) told the Home Affairs Portfolio Committee of the South African parliament on Tuesday.

According to BMA, the measures will include limiting the number of haulage trucks in the exit queue at any given time, deploying additional healthcare workers, and a ticket system for rapid Covid-19 tests.

“We’re going to keep the queue (for trucks) on the N1 at 700 meters,” BMA commissioner Gene Ravele told MPs.

“If the queue becomes more than 700 meters, we will divert trucks to truck stops.”

He said the BMA had engaged trucking associations to ensure compliance.

Additional holding areas provided by the Musina Local Municipality in December will be used to accommodate any overflow from the truck stop nearest to Beitbridge border post.

‘Stampede For Form One Places’

Schools in Bulawayo were yesterday overwhelmed by parents and guardians seeking Form One places for their children following the release of Grade Seven results last week.

Some of the schools were however, turning away prospective pupils saying Government had not yet given them the green light to enroll Form One pupils.

Government has however, announced that both boarding and day schools can start enrolling Forn One pupils.

The online application for boarding schools was opened on Tuesday and day schools also started enrolling on the same day but have been ordered to strictly observe the Covid-19 health protocols to avoid exposing applicants and staff to the pandemic.

Many parents and guardians were gathered at different day schools in the city yesterday seeking places for their children.

Government is yet to announce the schools opening date after the spike in Covid-19 cases last month forced it to defer the opening of schools that was set for 4 January.

Primary and Secondary Education Ministry’s public relations officer Mr Patrick Zumbo said both boarding and day schools started enrolling Form One pupils on Tuesday.

“The enrolment started yesterday at all the secondary schools. Those seeking boarding places have to apply online while authorities at day schools have been asked to strictly observe health protocols to protect both applicants and staff from Covid-19. All the heads of schools are aware that enrolment is underway and we are happy that the process is going on well. Parents seeking boarding places should apply online and they should be mindful that we have limited boarding places,” said Mr Zumbo.

He said there are only 264 boarding schools in the country which means the places are limited.

Enrolment at a number of day schools was in full swing in the city yesterday except for a few where authorities were saying they were waiting for a go-ahead from Government.

At Mpopoma High School parents and guardians were made to submit photocopies of Grade Seven results slips and copies of ED12 forms with details about the pupils and their parents or guardians.

This was a departure from the past when the school authorities would attend to pupils seeking places and advise on the same day whether or not one got the place.

Parents who spoke to the news crew said the school authorities told them that after submitting their particulars, the pupils will be advised on Monday whether or not they got the place.

Ms Melody Samanyanga from Entumbane suburb said Mpopoma High School was her first choice for her child.

“My hope is that my child will be enrolled at this school which is my first choice for many reasons. The school produces good results, pupils are discplined and its close to Entumbane where we stay.

We have been asked to submit our children’s papers and the authorities said names of successful applicants will be posted on the notice board on Monday next week,” said Ms Samanyanga.

Ms Nomalanga Sibanda, who was accompanying her younger sister, said restricting interaction at schools was good as it reduces exposure to Covid-19.

There were scores of parents/guardians gathered outside St Bernard’s High School in Old Pumula which was also enrolling Form One pupils.

The school authorities said they were giving preference to pupils that did exceptionally well in the Grade Seven public examination.

Those who were enrolled first obtained between five and 12 units.

At one time the school authorites were forced to call the police to maintain order as parents and guardians were causing commotion at the gate.

Some of the parents said they were being frustated by school authorities that were shutting them out at a number of schools.

Ms Pretty Nkomo from Pumula East said she had gone to two schools but had not found any joy.

“I went to Sizane High School and Magwegwe High School before coming here and both schools had said they had not started enrolling. Even here we are just waiting because we don’t know whether my child will be accepted or not.

They are not telling us who qualifes to be enrolled so we are just waiting hoping that our children will get the places,” said Ms Nkomo.

Another parent, Ms Nobukhosi Nyathi said day schools were supposed to also allow pupils to apply for places online given the risk of exposure to Covid-19.

Some parents accused authorities at St Bernard’s High School of demanding proof of employment from parents and guardians but the authorities have since denied the allegation.

St Columba’s High School in Makokoba suburb had not started enrolling Form Ones saying it was waiting for a go-ahead from Government.

A security guard at the school was turning away parents and guardians seeking places.

OPINION: ‘Zimbabwe’s Cartels That Are Not Real Cartels’

By Guest Correspondent| I just read the report by Daily Maverick, that is purporting to expose cartels in Zimbabwe. The problem with the report is it does not include the obvious and leading cartels in Zimbabwe, such as Old Mutual, Inscor, Cassava, Seedco (Limagrain/Monsanto), Anglo America and Delta.

This immediately begs one to question the efficacy of this report and why a report on cartels in Zimbabwe, would leave out the well known cartels that control meat, food, sugar, cement, ethanol, banking and fuel.

The bias is eerily similar to the Kangaroo Court being referred to in South Africa as the State Capture Commission, which in a country where 93% of the wealth sits in the hands of the white criminals who perpetuated the crime against humanity of apartheid. We are expected to believe that black people who control less than 7% of a shrinking stake of South Africa’s wealth, have somehow become powerful enough to capture the state from the thugs who perpetuated apartheid.

What is even more telling is, the Daily Maverick, which wrote this biased report, is a South African media house that belongs to the Oppenheimers and their Anglo American media empire, that is very notorious for spreading anti-black stereotypes, to maintain white supremacy in South Africa.

It would therefore seem, that this racist rag, has decided to use good old South African style propaganda, to selectively tarnish Zimbabwean companies that are not in it’s orbit of influence.

The only plausible reason for this, is white South Africa is targeting companies that have been assisting Zimbabwe to mitigate sanctions imposed by their kith and kin in the west, to maintain white South African hegemony upon regional economies.

The problem however, is the Daily Maverick can not talk about cartels, when the Oppenheimers and their Anglo American colonial charter company that was enriched by the crime against humanity of colonialism, is the leading cartel in Africa, ahead of Glencore and the seven sisters of oil.

They control over 60% of the South African economy, with huge controlling interests in almost every economic sector from mining, banking, insurance, weapons manufacturing, agriculture, chemicals, media and energy. As result, in South Africa, it’s an open secret that they captured the South African state on behalf of the Rothschild, Rockefeller combine during the time of Cecil Rhodes.

The peace negotiations in South Africa were initiated by the Oppenheimers, who instructed the Broederbond (who they control), to release Mandela once they had satisfied themselves that they ANC would toe the line. An indication that apartheid was underwritten by them.

On his release, Mandela lived in an Oppenheimer mansion and then moved to Dole Stein’s house, which was later turned into a boutique hotel to capitalize on Mandela’s association.

His cabinet was hand picked by the same family, hence, when we see Zuma being persecuted for state capture, it’s hypocrisy of the highest order.

At some point, Anglo America was also the biggest investor in Zimbabwe, controlling over 30% of the Zimbabwean private sector before the economy was transformed.

Then, they had interests in ZISCO Steel, Delta, Bindura Nickel, Barclays Bank, Blue Ribbon, National Foods, Hwange Colliery, Haggi Randi, Mazowe Estates, Spring Master, Border Timbers Hippo Valley, RAL Holdings, Zimbabwe Alloys and many others.

There is currently, growing suspicion that they are the puppet master pulling the strings at Innscor, which fortuitously bought most of Anglos food related businesses.

It was Anglo America and their steel subsidiary Haggi Rand that were central to the collapse of ZISCO Steel, which in 1980 was the biggest Iron and Steel plant in the Southern Hemisphere and the only one in Africa outside South Africa.

The demise of ZISCO began with Anglo as a shareholder in ZISCO, exerting pressure on the government of Zimbabwe and ZISCO’s board, through ZISCO’s Austrian CEO Kurt Kuhn, to push Lancashire Steel to give in to a hostile takeover by Anglo’s subsidiary Haggie Rand.

Lancashire Steel, was a competitor of Haggi Rand in the manufacture of steel wire and rods. The problem however, was Lancaster Steel produced higher quality and cheaper steel products than Haggie Rand, putting pressure on Haggie’s supernormal margins in South Africa.

As a result, Anglo sought to takeover or destroy Lancashire Steel so that they could enjoy a monopoly in Africa.

Anglo, in cahoots with former CEO of Voest Alpine (a supplier of steel manufacturing technology to ZISCO, apartheid South Africa and Angola) Kurt Kuhn, who became CEO of ZISCO after 1980, began to pressure Lancashire Steel to sell to Haggie.

Kurt Kuhn had been the former CEO of RISCO, who drove the company’s growth and sanction busting initiatives. In 1979 he resigned, however, a year later the Zimbabwe government offered him a contract to continue his work.

On his return, he brought staff from Voest Alpine to capacitate ZISCO staff and to undertake an over inflated $200mil recapitalization, financed by the West German government. With this, he used his clout as CEO, to mislead the Zimbabwean government into believing that Lancaster Steel was transfer pricing and should be taken over by Anglo.

The Zimbabwean government, through Minister of Industry Kumbirai Kangai, began to push Lancaster steel to accept the bid from Haggie Rand but they refused.

To induce the sale, the Zimbabwean government gave Haggie Rand bigger subsidies for exports than Lancaster. When ZISCO increased steel and iron prices by 25%, they prohibited Lancashire from passing the cost onto their customers.

In 1984, Kurt Kuhn’s contract came to an end and he used his Swiss based human talent agency, to poach Voest Alpine staff and some ZISCO high fliers to leave ZISCO, leaving the company capacitated.

Jobs were lost at Lancaster Steel, management was purged, until eventually the company was sold to the government and ZISCO. Soon after, Lancashire Steel, now under government control, signed an exclusive off-take contract with Haggi Rand.

With that, in 1985 in the depth of apartheid South Africa’s sanctions on Zimbabwe, the apartheid government imposed a 50% tariff on Lancaster Steel products entering the South African market. This made the once competitive Lancaster Steel products uncompetitive against Haggie’s inferior products, resulting in Lancaster making huge loses that wilted the company.

About the same time, huge investment was poured into capacitating ISCOR, Anglo and the recently denationalized iron and steel industry in South Africa, with the assistance of Voest Alpine. Meanwhile, in Zimbabwe, international lending institutions denied Zimbabwe loans to upgrade Zisco, forcing the country to import steel and focus on mineral extraction and agriculture as they began to deindustrialize Zimbabwe.

By late 2000, ZISCO Steel, with outdated machinery, could no longer compete with the efficiencies of ISCOR, Anglo and South African steel companies. This would lead to the collapse of ZISCO, linked industries and the loss of over 50 000 jobs.

Anglo and Kuhn had successfully created an Anglo American monopoly in steel wire and rods and apartheid South Africa’s ISCOR and South African steel companies, had become a steel cartel in Africa. This was right inline with the the western and the apartheid government agenda, of destroying black capacity to manufacture steel in Africa.

In South Africa, the moment the ANC came to power, ISCOR and SASOL (which was developed by Anglo bringing the Fischer Tropsch technology to South Africa), state owned enterprises under apartheid, were immediately privatized and sold to deny the black government, the power to control steel manufacturing and fuel production. This was done to ensure that the black government had no capacity to industrialize and would remain at the mercy of the Oppenheimers, as was done to Zimbabwe.

Over and above the role Anglo played in building South Africa monopoly in iron smelting, Anglo America is a dominant player in gold and platinum mining, refinery and sales.

They own gold and platinum mines, while holding controlling stakes in the British gold and platinum refinery, Johnson Matthey and Germany’s BASF, which bought the US refinery Angelhart Industries, in which the Oppenheimers had substantial shareholding.

Their shareholding in these refineries, earned Anglo America a seat on the cartel that sells and fixes gold and platinum prices globally. This cartel, referred to as the London Fix or the London Bullion Market Association, is overseen by the Bank of England and members such as Goldman Sachs, HSBC, BASF and Standard Chartered Bank.

Today, we hear that the government of Zimbabwe, is selling a stake of its gold refinery to a company in which the former CEO of Implats will play a part. One wonders if Anglo America and the Oppenheimers are not behind this move.

This is the might and monopoly of Anglo America. So for their media house to have their publication write an article on Zimbabwean cartels, without first talking about their overbearing global monopoly, is really an insult on our intelligence.

It also makes us wonder if they are attempting to pull another Lancashire Steel move, to destroy companies that are assisting Zimbabwe to bust sanctions in the same way Swiss Contra AG and SALG were created by Anglo and Rio Tinto to bust sanctions for RISCO and Bindura Nickel for the Rhodesian government.

“ED Administration Afraid Of Young People”: Cecilia Chimbiri

By A Correspondent- | MDC Alliance Youth Assembly vice chairperson, Cecilia Chimbiri has said Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration will never crush the spirit of revolution.

Cecilia was speaking to reporters in Harare after being released from prison on Tuesday.

Cecilia, Hon Joana Mamombe and Netsai Marova are victims of relentless State brutality.

” We have gone through harrowing moments but our spirits are not crushed. Our message is clear- the struggle goes on…

We are prepared to die fighting for freedom. This battle is not about Cecilia, it is not about Joana, rather it is about the suffering people of Zimbabwe.

“ED Using Surrogates To Destroy Real Opposition”: President Chamisa

Tinashe Sambiri| Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa is using his surrogates to destroy genuine opposition, President Nelson Chamisa has said.

In a strong article published by a leading African publication, President Chamisa accused Mr Mnangagwa of lying to the nation after assuming power in 2017.

Mr Mnangagwa’s new dispensation is killing and tormenting opposition members in spite of promising to uphold democratic principles.

Below is part of President Chamisa’s article:

Here in Zimbabwe, we know all about false and misleading promises. When the current regime took power from Robert Mugabe in November 2017, it made grand promises including a new democratic dispensation, respect for human rights and re-engagement with the international community.

But it went on to do the exact opposite – disputed elections, violating human rights, and subverting democracy. Lately, it has been using surrogates to undermine and shut down the opposition. It has taken money due to the opposition and diverted it to its surrogates. It has facilitated the removal of the opposition’s elected representatives from Parliament and local authorities.

Africa cannot afford further corrosions of democracy in this decade. Government should be by the meaningful consent of the people. That consent is transferred through a transparent, free and fair election process. Consent that is coerced is not legitimate consent because it is not free choice. Election results that are announced when there are serious and glaring irregularities lack legitimacy.

The global community should not keep rubber stamping these illegitimate outcomes in the name of maintaining peace. The consequences of such ratifications are the continuation of exclusionary systems of government in the face of a demographic wave.

We have seen four elections in Africa that were compromised by the behaviour of incumbents and institutions meant to uphold electoral integrity. Unfortunately, those elections were sanitized by the global community even in the face of massive irregularities and patently unfair conditions of campaigning.

The following elections should not have been sanitized in any shape or form by the global community. The Zimbabwe 2018 elections, Mozambique 2019 elections, Tanzania 2020 elections and now most recently the Uganda 2021 elections.

These normalisations from the international community perpetuate a culture of unfair competition and illiberal democracy which is anathema to progress.

Let’s consider the Uganda elections, what the world witnessed throughout 2020 and in the final weeks of the election race was the blatant use of power by Yoweri Museveni to derail his opponent for President Bobi Wine:

• The killing of 55 protestors in November 2020 who were protesting after yet another illegitimate arrest of Bobi Wine on spurious grounds;

• The denial of accreditation to international observers which prevented robust scrutiny of the election. The American delegation of observers withdrew from observing the election noting that the election lacked transparency and credibility while a coalition of hundreds of civil society organizations noted that only 10 out of their 1900 accreditation requests had been granted.

• The deliberate internet and social media blackout which was intended to prevent the free flow of information in monitoring the election.

These tactics are not new to me or my fellow Zimbabweans. We have a government legitimacy problem because of a deeply flawed election in 2018. I have seen the Mugabe regime and now Mnangagwa regime roll out the same tactics all of my adult life. When we began the MDC in 1999, it was to fight this culture of despotism. Two decades later, we are still in the trenches, fighting a vicious regime.

Mugabe is gone, but his successor is just a different face with the same methods. As most Zimbabweans have experienced, to their great disappointment, nothing has changed.

Now the dictators are callously exploiting the COVID pandemic to strengthen repression. They have been clamping down on dissent and criticism. In Uganda, Museveni used the pandemic to prevent his main rival from campaigning effectively. In Zimbabwe, the regime suspended by-elections under the guise of fighting the pandemic, but it carried on with its political activities.

The Mnangagwa regime has been arresting opponents and journalists and throwing them into crowded and squalid jails, exposing them to the novel corona virus.

When our spokesperson at the MDC Alliance, Fadzayi Mahere left prison recently, she tested positive for the virus. By arresting her on the most spurious charges alongside journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and our deputy Chairperson Job Sikhala, the regime had deliberately placed her in harm’s way.

The problem is there is no robust peer review among the old generation of African politicians. Dictators that rig elections and use violence against opponents are given a free pass.

That’s what happened in Zimbabwe in 2018. It happened recently in Tanzania and now in Uganda…

“We Are Transparent On Covid-19 Vaccine Procurement”: Govt

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa has dismissed reports that her government doesn’t know which vaccines to buy.

Monica Mutsvangwa

Minister Mutsvangwa said in addition to 200 000 donations from the Chinese Government, Zimbabwe has purchased 600 000 jabs from the same country.

Zimbabwe was now expected to dispatch an aircraft to China on February 13 to collect the vaccines, which were expected in the country two days later.

“The Government of the People’s Republic of China has extended a donation of 200 000 Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine doses. This vaccine, which has 76 to 86 percent efficacy, has been endorsed by the World Health Organisation and is already being used in several countries,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

“This donation and an initial batch of 600 000 doses which the Government has purchased, are expected in the country by February 15, 2021, and the first week of March 2021 respectively. An aircraft will be dispatched to China no later than February 13, 2021, to collect these vaccine doses.

“Russia has donated some of its Sputnik V vaccines, with negotiations ongoing for the procurement of more vaccines. India has also promised to provide vaccines and Zimbabwe is expecting some vaccines through the African Union vaccination programme.”

Minister Mutsvangwa said Government had noted with concern, efforts by some mischief-makers to cause confusion and panic over Zimbabwe’s vaccination programme.

“His Excellency, President ED Mnangagwa, when he declared the Covid-19 pandemic a state of disaster, said that Government would be transparent in its response and action plan against the virus.

“Government continues to work with the World Health Organisation and other partners as part of Zimbabwe’s response to this pandemic,” she said.

Minister Mutsvangwa said the Government had placed an order for the vaccine adding that key to the response plan, was science-based evidence on fighting the pandemic.

“Government has already developed a deployment plan, mapping the priority groupings for roll out of the vaccines. No one will be left behind in this fight against Covid-19,” she said.

Meanwhile, the world’s largest diamond producer, Alrosa, has pledged to buy vaccines for Zimbabwe.

The Russian mining behemoth, which accounts for almost a third of the world’s rough diamond production, has a 70 percent stake in Alrosa Zimbabwe with the remaining 30 percent being owned by the Zimbabwean Government through the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company.

Alrosa chief executive officer Mr Sergey Ivanov yesterday told international media that they would buy and donate the Sputnik V vaccines to Zimbabwe and Angola.

“We intend to provide dozens of thousands of vaccines to each of these countries upon their availability for export. Allowing for time needed to produce the vaccine, we expect first shipments to start from the second half of March,” Mr Ivanov told Bloomberg. -Herald/additional reporting

Trio Battling For Life After Grandson Torches House

A village head in Mpofu area of Lupane, his wife and domestic worker are battling for life in hospital with severe burns after his grandson allegedly doused a three-roomed house they were sleeping in with petrol before setting it alight in an attempt to kill them.

Four other members who include the couple’s 23-year-old daughter and three grandchildren aged between seven and 10 years escaped unhurt following the incident that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday.

All household property comprising two beds, three wardrobes, a tv set, sofas, a generator, kitchen unit, decoders, clothes, foodstuffs, cellphone handsets, identity documents and various other items as well as US$1 000 cash was burnt.

The suspect Kholwani Donga who is in police custody after being arrested on Tuesday, reportedly accused his grandfather Mr Robert Donga (75) and grandmother Ms Angela Mpala (52) of being responsible for his father’s death.

Donga claims his grandparents bewitched his father leading to his death last month. Sources close to the happenings told Chronicle that Donga started having problems with his grandparents last week after consulting a tsikamutanda who told him that they bewitched his father.

He allegedly attempted to kill them last week on Thursday when he torched a two-roomed house but there was no one inside.

Donga allegedly made a second attempt on Friday and burnt a kitchen hut. Seeing that his two attempts had missed the targets, Donga allegedly armed himself with petrol around 1AM on Tuesday and doused the three roomed house where Mr Donga, Ms Mpala, their daughter Ms Ayanda Donga and her daughter Bandile aged eight as well as two other grandchildren Buhle and Andile aged 10 and seven were sleeping.

A domestic worker Praymore Sibanda aged 19 who was seriously burnt, was also sleeping in the sitting room.

The family had shifted all the property into the three-roomed house following last week’s fire incidents, unbeknown to them that Donga was not yet done.

Ms Donga said her father and Praymore were severely burnt and were transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital from St Luke’s Hospital in Lupane.

“We were all asleep when I heard a loud bang and my mother screaming and I discovered that the house was on fire,” said Ms Donga in a telephone interview. She said she quickly jumped out through the window and started rescuing others.

“I think he poured petrol in all the rooms. The fire started from the main bedroom where my parents were sleeping. I pulled the three girls out and that is when I saw him (the suspect) and I called him by his name asking why he had chosen to kill his own grandfather. He charged at me and tried to strangle me and he let go when my child screamed.

I rushed inside to rescue my parents and when I tried to pull my father, his skin was peeling off because he had been seriously burnt. My father had sold three beasts and all the money was burnt, nothing was salvaged,” said Ms Donga.

Lupane District Development Coordinator Mrs Ennerty Sithole who chairs the local Civil Protection Unit (CPU) said an appeal for help has been made. “We visited the family as CPU and have made an appeal to various stakeholders and some have started sending donations. The family remained with nothing and desperately needs food, building material, clothes, blankets and assistance with medical bills,” she said. Chief Mabhikwa of Lupane said the community was shocked by the incident.

“There are some reports coming through that the suspect accused his grandparents of witchcraft. This is a painful incident and sad chapter in our community because the family has lost everything while some are battling for life.

“We encourage people to solve disputes amicably without resorting to violence. This is not the right time to be running around because of the Covid-19 pandemic and we are grateful to those that have assisted so far,” he said.

Police could not readily comment on the matter. Donga is expected to appear in court soon. -Chronicle

Zimbabwe Purchases Covid-19 Vaccine From Sinopharm

By A Correspondent- Zimbabwe has purchased 600 000 Covid-19 vaccine doses from China’s Sinopharm, in addition to 200 000 China has donated, Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa has revealed.

China last week listed Zimbabwe among the first three African countries that will get free doses of the Chinese vaccine, along with 11 other developing nations.

Mutsvangwa told a post-cabinet media briefing that the country will also take delivery of the first batch of the vaccines it had purchased from China early next month.

“The donation and initial batch purchased are expected in Zimbabwe by 15 February 2021 and the first week of March 2021, respectively,” she said.

She said Zimbabwe had also purchased an unspecified amount of Russia’s Sputnik vaccine, while India, like China, has also offered a donation and an option to purchase commercially.

Zimbabwe has also submitted interest to participate in the African Union COVID-19 vaccines program, the minister added.

The private sector will also support the Zimbabwean government through a formula that allows them to keep 50 percent of what they procure for their employees.

“The administration of the COVID-19 vaccinations in Zimbabwe will be on a voluntary basis,” said the minister.

The Zimbabwean government has said it will prioritize frontline healthcare workers, the elderly and other vulnerable groups in the vaccination program and plans to vaccinate 60 percent of the population to achieve herd immunity.

Zimbabwe has recorded 34,781 COVID-19 cases, including 29,289 recoveries and 1,353 deaths since last March.

Nurse “Kills” Patient After Performing Operation…

A male nurse at a private medical centre in Domboshava is under investigation after a patient he attended to died from what has been described as inadequate and wrong treatment.

The patient’s family alleges that the nurse described himself as a doctor and only said he was a nurse after their relative’s death.

Lawrence Zinaka (58) qualified as a nurse some 30 years ago and acquired the nickname “Chiremba” at Enliven Medical Centre in Domboshava, where patients would consult him.

Nurses attend to patients in many high-density surgeries and it’s standard practice at local clinics, with the nurse expected to refer the patient to a qualified doctor for more serious conditions or when there might be complications.

It is legal, but someone who is not a registered medical practitioner cannot describe themselves as one.

On January 5 this year, Zinaka attended to Ms Taurai Meza, a patient with a history of congestive cardiac arrest, who was brought to the surgery by her relatives complaining of chest pains, a dry cough and vomiting, among other symptoms.

The relatives wanted to see a doctor and they were referred to Zinaka who was in the consulting room. The relatives believed that Zinaka was a doctor and allege that they were led to believe this.

Zinaka diagnosed the patient and gave her a prescription. After she took the drugs, Ms Meza’s health deteriorated and she died.

Ms Meza’s relatives have since reported Zinaka to the police for what they allege is impersonating a medical doctor. Investigations are still in progress.

Contacted for comment, Zinaka said the allegations of pretence were false and that he never impersonated a doctor.

“Their relative had a heart condition and they brought her here. When they arrived, they did not ask to see a doctor. As a registered nurse, I saw that the patient needed help and I was there and willing to help.

“All that I did was within my mandate. I prescribed medication because I am allowed to do so. But I never told them or anyone that I was or I am a medical doctor. That is false.

“Most of the people at work call me ‘Chiremba’ and it has come to be my nickname. Maybe the relatives heard them calling Chiremba and thought I was the doctor. But I never introduced myself as a doctor,” he said.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that the police received an impersonation report.

Goromonzi district medical officer Dr Steve Karim, who was asked to review the patient management plan in respect of the late Ms Meza, found Zinaka’s treatment wanting.

Considering Ms Meza was known to be a cardiac failure patient, she was supposed to be admitted to a hospital because of the nature of drugs prescribed by Zinaka.

“I was asked by a law officer to review a patient management plan and implications thereof in respect to a private medical facility (Enliven Medical Centre) in my area of jurisdiction.

“The following are my observations, the person was given intravenous fluids, a total of two litres to run at a rate of one litre per hour. This is despite the fact that the patient is a known congestive cardiac failure patient. This intervention has potential to worsen cardiac failure because of fluid overload

“The patient was given frusemide which is a diuretic whose effect is to accelerate fluids loss. This demonstrates clear contradiction with giving intravenous fluids.

“The patient was prescribed two courses of intravenous antibiotics for three days. Patients who are deemed severe enough to warrant intravenous antibiotics should be offered hospital admission. The management plan does not indicate offer for admission.”

Dr Cuthbert Mudimu, who is in charge of the private surgery, said Zinaka had been suspended to allow internal investigations.

“He is allowed to prescribe and can be consulted. He will only call the doctor on issues that he cannot manage, especially major operations.

“For now, the nurse has since been suspended to allow investigations to proceed. I cannot comment on the issue of impersonation. I think the nurse is in a better position to do that.-The Herald
