Coronavirus :Take Note Of Prevention Methods

Farai Dziva|Zimbabwe Online Health Centre, a digital platform for health awareness, has urged the nation to remain alert as COVID-19 continues to ravage the world.

See below a statement compiled by Zimbabwe Online Health Centre director, Dr Ellane Simon:

The COVID-19 virus is crown shaped.

It affects both animals and humans and can be transmitted from animals to humans. Anyone anywhere can be infected by the virus. It infects people through coughing and sneezing, touching an infected person’s hands or face or touching infected objects an infected person has touched.

It is like all the other viruses that cause common cold and is common in winter.

Symptoms include a runny nose, headache, cough, sore throat, fever and a feeling of being unwell. In people with an immunocompromised immune system such as children, elderly, those with heart diseases they might develop respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia or bronchitis.

There are ways one can protect themselves from catching the virus. Prevention methods include: washing hands with soap and water or using a hand rub always. Avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.

Avoid close contact with infected people. Those infected should also cover their nose, mouth when coughing.

No vaccine or treatment is available for COVID-19.

However if infected one needs plenty of rest, lots of fluids and manage the symptoms such as sore throat, fever. If there is a pneumonia or bronchitis one should also receive appropriate treatment for that respiratory tract infection.

Because this is a communicable virus it spreads fast therefore always protect yourself and your community.

Prevention is always better than cure.

Police Must Stop Suppressing Citizens’ Rights

The ZRP is brazenly violating the country’s Constitution and repressing citizens’ rights.

The ZRP is also treating the MDC as a terrorist organization in clear violation of the basic tenets of prudent policing as enshrined in the law and in international best practice.

Instead of servicing the Zimbabwean population in accordance with the laws of the land, the police service which clearly behaves like Boko Haram decimating and violating all forms of the rule of law.

We have seen the police service involved in serious human rights violations such as;
-Disregarding court orders
-Selective application of the law
-Unnecessary abductions and assaults on innocent members of the public
-Unlawful detentions
-Denying and disrupting MDC meetings and peaceful demonstrations

It is pertinent to state that when the police are notified of any demonstration or meeting, it is not for them to approve but to deploy their officers to facilitate the exercise of the right to assemble.

The police have become the source of all forms of riotous behavior and chaos in the country.

They cannot stop any meeting or demonstrations because it is not one of their duties to do so but to deploy their officers to make sure that no crime is committed.

We feel there should be a deliberate retraining programmes for all police officers.

There are so many criminal cases committed by the police, many of which go unreported for fear of victimization.

Only such cases like armed robbery, rape, extortion and others end up in courts.

We demand that the police should come up with serious reforms to align them with Constitutional behavior and with international best practice. The Constitution and the law are very clear that for the purposes of preserving the internal security and maintaining law and order in Zimbabwe, there shall be a police service and every member of that police service is charged with the general duty of maintaining law and order by taking all steps necessary for:

-Preserving peace
-Protecting property from malicious injury
-Preventing crime
-Detecting crime
-Apprehending offenders
-Suppressing all forms of civil commotion or disturbances that may occur in any part of Zimbabwe
-Upholding the constitution and enforcing the law without fear or favour
-The police service must be non-partisan, national in character, patriotic, professional and surbodinate to the civilian authority as established by the constitution.

Siblings In Near Fist Fight Over Church Offering

By A Correspondent- A church meeting was disrupted last week after an angry daughter of the late Guta Ramwari founder allegedly burst into a meeting which her brother had convened and accused him of squandering church offerings before her brother retaliated by attacking her with a chair.

In a fit of rage Joseph Tayali’s sister Sarah reportedly went a gear up with her demands as she threatened to shoot her brother if he did not surrender the money to her.

A church elder had to step in and stop the fight. Joseph reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of his sister.

Sarah appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Stephen Ndhlovu facing a charge of threats to commit murder as defined in section 186(1) as read  with section 47 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform )Act (Chapter 9:23).

Due to lack of evidence she was found not guilty.

In arriving at his ruling the magistrate said:

“ There is lack of evidence and the evidence of the witnesses did not corroborate. He also noted that Sarah threatened to shoot and not to kill or murder the complainant.”

Prosecutor Nokuthula Chitsungo said Sarah stormed into the meeting and asked her brother to use a public address system but her brother stood his ground saying the meeting was private. Joseph asked her to sit down but she refused, as a result an argument heightened between the pair. In a bid to hit her he allegedly threw a chair at her.

It is said Sarah demanded her share of the church offerings and quarterly allowances while pointing out that she had a right to the share of offerings since the church was founded by her father.

In her defence, Sarah submitted that they were children of the late Guta RaMwari church founder Taxwell Tayali and were both members of the church’s supreme council.

She stated that Joseph took absolute control of the church after their father’s death and had been embezzling funds and depriving her of monthly and quarterly allowances.

“However, by virtue of her right, accused person attended church meeting and this pissed complainant off who became violent and started shouting at the accused. Complainant even threw a chair at the accused and this resulted in a heated argument between the two,” Sarah stated in her defence outline.

She submitted that Joseph made a false report to the police and fabricated charges to get rid of her.-Statemedia

No Re-engagement With International Community Without Reforms

Lethargy on Reforms, Grand Corruption and Human Rights abuses seriously undermining Zimbabwe’s re-engagement thrust: US President

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) takes note of President Trump’s statement to the United States (US) Congress on the continuation of the National Emergency with respect to Zimbabwe Foreign Policy issued on March 4, 2020.

The statement is an indictment on the Harare regime’s attempts to re-engage the international community and a clarion call for reforms, an end to corruption and respect for human rights abuses.

The statement notes that Zimbabwe had “ample opportunity to implement reforms that could set the country on a constructive path, stabilize the Southern Africa Region and open the door to greater cooperation with the United States’

The statement further notes that ‘the Zimbabwean government has arguably accelerated its persecution of critics and economic mismanagement in the past year, during which security forces have conducted extrajudicial killings, rapes and alleged abductions’.

The statement by the US President comes a few weeks after the EU Council resolutions and the International Monetary Fund statement that all called for reforms, an end to corruption and state sponsored human rights abuses.

The MDC has consistently argued that Zimbabwe’s reengagement with the international community is a function of our domestic policy.

The actions of the regime on the domestic arena have huge ramifications on its relations with the rest of the world. The Mnangagwa regime has consistently engaged in actions that are not in line with the Constitution of Zimbabwe, regional statutes and international law. Yet the regime has shamelessly lied to the whole world that it is implementing comprehensive reforms and committed to the reform agenda.

These actions include the killing of the 6 unarmed civilians on August 1 2018, the 17 extrajudicial killings, cases of rape, abductions in January 2019, continued persecution of human rights defenders and opposition members, banning of peaceful protests and grand corruption.

The MDC has also argued that engaging lobbyists such as Ballard, Mercury LLC and Avenue Strategies for huge millions of taxpayers’ dollars as the Harare regime has done will not yield any positive results. It will further impoverish the struggling Zimbabwean citizenry.

The MDC reiterates that only action on the reform agenda is more likely to help our beloved country in its reengagement efforts with the international community.

Snake Saves Man From Being Killed By Robbers

NATIONAL, BUSINESS, BREAKING

A man from Denver Suburb thanked his lucky stars on Friday when a snake found in his house saved him from further attacks from robbers who had already axed him countless times all over his body.

Mike Zheve (52) who had gone to Mutare for a few days went back home where he stays alone on Friday to find a snake waiting to be his knight in the dark night against intruders who had violently made their way into his house by axing down his door.

“I was sleeping when I heard a loud bang on my door.

Before long the two males were already inside my house beating and axing me all over my body demanding that I surrender my Huawei P20 phone, watch and all my money to them,” said Zheve.

Zheve said he got suspicious of the duo who seemed to know the type of phone he was using even though they hadn’t seen it.
“I took the watch off and gave it to them.

As I retrieved the money where I kept it, we saw a huge snake just next to my bed in the same room.

We all got a fright and the other guy quickly stroked it with the axe,” said Zheve.-B-Metro

Your Cabinet Is Useless, Mliswa Tells ED

By Jane Mlambo| Outspoken Norton legislator Temba Mliswa has dropped a bombshell against President Emmerson Mnangagwa saying his cabinet is the worst ever.

In a two-thread Twitter post, Mliswa said most of the cabinet ministers appointed by Mnangagwa do not have political nor economic traction and busy bunking parliamentary sessions despite the country being in an economic crisis requiring all decks on the cards.

1/ As far as I’m concerned this is the worst Cabinet ever! The majority have neither political nor economic traction. Even most Deputy Ministers are falling short. Whilst they should appear in Parly on Wednesdays they’re consistently absent & yet the economy is in a mess!

2/ This is the time they have to educate the Nation on their policies & strategies. Do they honestly understand the processes & procedures of Parly & their subsequent roles? Where’s their depth?

I Was Punished For Bad Table Manners: Tsenengamu

By Jane Mlambo| Expelled former Zanu PF Youth leader, Godfrey Tsenengamu has sensationally claimed that the reason why he was booted out of the ruling party was because he developed bad table manners of speaking while eating.

Posting on Facebook after his expulsion from Zanu PF during Wednesday’s politburo meeting, Tsenengamu labelled his former party a looting club who chucked him out for his lack of manners to speak while others were busy eating.

“Punished for bad table manners. I spoke when I was at the table & fellow dinners kicked me out. No Regrets. My Conscience is clear,” said Tsenengamu.

Before his dismissal from Zanu PF, Tsenengamu together with Lewis Matutu named three individuals they accused of running corruption cartels bleeding the economy.

The two’s allegations confirmed widely held speculations that Zimbabwe’s economy is failing to take off due to corruption and abuse of power by people connected to the ruling party.

Ronaldinho Will Not Be Prosecuted Over False Travelling Documents

Ronaldinho had his Brazilian passport withdrawn in November 2018 after failing to pay a $2.5 million fine for environmental damage

Former Brazilian football star Ronaldinho and his brother were “deceived” and will not face prosecution for traveling to Paraguay on false documents, officials said Thursday.

Prosecutor Federico Delfino said he had recommended not pursuing Ronaldinho and his brother Roberto de Assis Moreira.

“But on the condition of admitting committing the crime of which they are accused, in this case the use of false documents,” he said.

Ronaldinho’s lawyer had earlier denied that he and his brother had used fake passports to enter Paraguay.

“We have proceeded to charge several people,” Delfino told the press.

“Ronaldinho and his brother Roberto contributed relevant information to the investigation” and were then removed from the case.

The brothers were acting in “good faith” in receiving the falsified Paraguayan documents, he said.

“The information that they provided is very useful in disrupting a criminal organization dedicated to the production of false documents,” he said.

Brazilian authorities withdrew Ronaldinho’s passport in November 2018 after he failed to pay a $2.5 million fine for environmental damage incurred during the building of a property in Porto Alegre, in southern Brazil.

The World Cup winner and his brother were questioned for more than seven hours by the public prosecutor in Asuncion.

Ronaldinho had been invited to the Paraguayan capital by a foundation for needy children, and to promote his new book.

Negligent Driver Kills Boy (2)

By A Correspondent- A Bulawayo motorist allegedly failed to control his motor vehicle and fatally hit a two-year-old boy in Pumula South suburb last month.

John Sibanda (60) whose residential address was not revealed in court, allegedly caused the death of Luthando Ndlovu while he was driving in the wrong lane.

Sibanda pleaded not guilty to culpable homicide when he appeared before Western Commonage Magistrate MS Gladmore Mushove.

He told the court that he took all the necessary precautions expected from the driver and the accident was not due to negligence.

“Your worship, I admit that a child died after he was run over by my motor vehicle. I also acknowledge that I was driving on the wrong lane but this is because I saw a car pulling a trolly in front of me and the best possible reaction was to change lanes which I did,” said Sibanda.

“I reduced my speed to 15 kilometres per hour, checked the road to see if it was clear then afterwards went on to drive on the right lane as I wanted to overtake the car. I didn’t see the child anywhere on the road and I only stopped my car after I heard some noise coming from my right side.”

Sibanda said he kept a proper lookout under the circumstances and reduced speed.

The prosecutor, Mr Kenneth Shava, countered Sibanda’s defence, saying he was speeding which led to the accident and death of the minor.

“Given this scenario, all that you have said before this court is evidence enough that you were driving at an excessive speed. You were driving on the wrong lane, you failed to see the child who was a few metres away from the road side and that on its own is enough evidence to prove that you failed to keep a proper lookout under these circumstances,” he said.

Sibanda was remanded out of custody to next Wednesday for his defense case. Mr Shava said on February 13 this year at around 4PM, Sibanda was driving an Isuzu KB200 when he lost control of the car.

“The accused person who was driving along an unnamed road in Pumula South suburb, lost control of his vehicle and hit the minor who was trying to cross the road,” he said.

The minor was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital where he died on admission. The postmortem report revealed that the boy suffered severe brain haemorrhages, multiple fragmented skull fractures and traumatised lungs.

The state alleges that Sibanda was negligent in his driving in that he failed to keep a proper look out under the circumstances, failed to stop or act reasonably when the accident seemed imminent.

He was driving on the wrong side and he failed to exercise the highest degree of care expected from a driver who sees children in front of him. -Statemedia

Matemadanda Fires Warning Shots

By A Correspondent- Zanu-PF candidates who canvass for positions before the announcement of dates for District Co-ordinating Committee elections will be automatically disqualified, the party’s national commissar, Victor Matemadanda, has said.

Matemadanda said the commissariat was waiting for guidance from the Politburo on the DCC elections and provincial elections for Harare and Bulawayo.

Harare and Bulawayo provinces have gone for a year without provincial structures following the dissolution of the previous executives by President Mnangagwa in March 2019.

The two provinces conducted DCC elections after they were re-introduced last year with the remaining eight provinces expected to conduct theirs soon. Some party members have been accused of using food aid availed by President Mnangagwa to buy votes ahead of the DCC polls.

In an interview on Tuesday, Matemadanda said electioneering amounted to indiscipline and in cases where it is proven, the members concerned will be disqualified.

“We are waiting for the Politburo to give us guidance on the election dates both for the DCCs and provincial elections for Harare and Bulawayo,” said Matemadanda.

“We heard that there are some people who are already canvassing for positions using the rice donated by our President. Anyone with evidence of such practices should bring it forward for disciplinary action and such people will be automatically disqualified.”

Matemadanda urged party members to use party channels to air their concerns.

In Mashonaland Central, war veterans alleged that all legislators from the lower House were using food aid to work against President Mnangagwa.

Matemadanda said such accusations were over-exaggerated. He said party members, especially war veterans, should be wary of the impact and consequences of the information they released to the media.

Matemadanda said the revolutionary party did not operate on hearsay.

“There can be one or two who are not toeing the party line but again it’s difficult to deal with them in the absence of evidence,” he said.

“Anyone with evidence of a particular MP who is abusing his position or food aid should bring it forward.”-Statemedia

Biti Praises The Late Tsvangirai

By A Correspondent- MDC vice president Tendai Biti has praised former party president, the late Morgan Tsvangirai as a champion of the struggle for democracy whose name will forever be remembered.

Speaking during a Morgan Tsvangirai Memorial Lecture in Nyanyadzi recently, Biti said Tsvangirai had done what many had deemed unthinkable by defeating Robert Mugabe of Zanu-PF in the first round of the March 2008 elections.

“The 2008 elections were president Tsvangirai’s greatest achievement. He won resoundingly by over 70 percent and Mugabe admitted to this fact.

“Mugabe knew he had lost and wanted to hand over power but his henchman refused and had to play with the figures so that Tsvangirai would not have the 50 percent plus one vote majority needed to win the elections outright,” said Biti.

The March 29, 2008 harmonised elections saw Tsvangirai coming closer to taking over power after polling 47.87 percent against former Zanu-PF leader Robert Mugabe’s 43.24 percent.

The country was, however, made to wait for more than five weeks by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) which did not announce election results amid allegations that the electoral body was cooking up results to rescue Mugabe by reducing Tsvangirai’s victory margin so that a run-off could be declared.

Biti said Tsvangirai agreed to the June 27, 2008, election run-off though he knew he had won the first round but had to pull out to save his supporters who were being killed by Zanu-PF with the help of the army and other security agencies.

“We all know what happened in June of 2008 during the presidential run-off. President Tsvangirai agreed to the run-off even though he knew he had won resoundingly.

“Zanu-PF unleashed terror on our people and many were killed while others were left with life-changing injuries. Women were raped and babies were cut out from pregnant women. This was the brutality unleashed on our people.

“Being a selfless leader, president Tsvangirai had to pull out of the run-off to save his people and had to agree to a Government of National Unity,” said Biti.

MDC Manicaland secretary for communications, David Panganai told TellZim News that the memorial lecture was the starting point in MDC’s efforts to establish a Morgan Richard Tsvangirai school of ideology.

“The role played by the late Morgan Tsvangirai in fighting for democracy in the country is indelible. The party’s resolution is to start a school of ideology in his honour,” said Panganai.-TellZim

Facebook Love Message Ends Marriage

By A Correspondent- A facebook love message from another man was enough to make Michael Sakala resolve to dump his wife.

Sakala, 27, a resident of George compound, told a local court that he had lost interest in his wife, Prisca Musole, 22 because was not faithful.

He was testifying in a case in which he had sued for marriage reconciliation.

“All along I did not know that my wife was communicating with Chris of Livingstone until I grabbed her phone and found love messages. I came to understand the reason she could go outside to answer her phone,” Sakala said.

He told the court that Musole had said that Chris was nice to her.

Sakala said:

“One time she told me that Chris had promised to take her to school if she goes out with him.”

He said it was disappointing that his wife was talking to another man when she is married.

Sakala, in his submissions that he is not willing to reconcile with Musole.

Earlier, Musole told the court that Sakala’s mother does not like her.

“My husband told me that his mother has been telling him that he should marry another woman. She has also told me that I should stay away from her son,” she said.

Musole said she was forced confess to her husband that she had an affair with another man because Sakala threatened to strangle her to death if she did not confess.

She told the court that she wants to reconcile with her husband because no man can marry her if he leaves her.

“At the moment, no man can look at me because I have stroke which I got in Sakala’s house. I love my husband and still want to remain with him.” Musole said.

In passing judgment magistrate Pauline Newa dismissed the claim on grounds that Sakala was not willing to reconcile.-SundayMail

Shock As Maid Burns Infant For Soiling Himself

By A Correspondent- A 16 year old Lusaka maid has admitted assaulting a one-year-old infant by pouring hot water on him after he defecated on himself.

The juvenile is charged with assault on a child occasioning actual bodily harm.

It is alleged that on January 9, 2020, in Lusaka’s 10 Miles area, the 16-year-old maid assaulted a child below the age of 16 years.

When the matter came up before Magistrate Nsunge Chanda yesterday, the juvenile pleaded guilty.

The accused told the Court that she slapped the boy after he soiled his pants and later poured hot water on him as she was about to cook nshima.

“Yes, I beat him because he defecated on himself; he is not my son, I was just a maid and I burnt him on his back (with the hot water),” narrated the accused.

Facts before the Court are that on the material day, the accused poured hot water on the boy after discovering that the infant had soiled himself.

The accused was apparently seen by another juvenile, who was present and later alerted neighbours and the mother to the victim, who then reported the matter to police.

And questioning the guardian, Magistrate Chanda noted that the accused was a minor and should not be allowed custody of another child and warned the victim’s step-father, who acted as guardian, to ensure that he worked hard to ensure that he took his children to school, even as he remained unemployed.

The accused remains in custody and the matter has since been adjourned to March 11, 2020, for presentation of facts.-ZambianObserver

The Mozambican Gas Promise and Why It Epitomizes the African Dream

In what seemed like the blink of an eye, Mozambique’s known natural gas reserves spiked from nearly nothing to over 165 tcf, placing it as the continent’s third biggest reserve holder

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, March 3, 2020/ — By NJ Ayuk

It has been almost exactly ten years since Anadarko drilled the well that would give Mozambique its first major gas find in over sixty years of mostly disappointing oil and gas exploration. Many wells followed that first offshore discovery in block 1 and further in ENI-operated block 4.

In what seemed like the blink of an eye, Mozambique’s known natural gas reserves spiked from nearly nothing to over 165 tcf, placing it as the continent’s third biggest reserve holder.

Just like that, one of Africa’s poorest countries was about to become one of the world’s biggest energy players. Well, not really just like that. In 2010, Mozambique had no know-how in oil and gas, no negotiation capabilities, understanding of the sector, no appropriate legal framework in place, nor human or financial capital to take advantage of this momentous thing that had just happened. A country that at the time could offer access to electricity to only 18% of its citizens, was suddenly endowed with enough natural gas to power half of Europe for a couple of decades and more.

Since then, much water has passed under the bridge and ink over paper. Presidents, ministers and corporate leaders have been replaced, licenses have changed hands, projects have been proposed, declined or approved, and now, more than ever, the promise of wealth seems close, but is it? Afterall, we are ten years in and no natural gas is flowing, no LNG is being produced or sold, and while a bit better off, at 27% of electricity penetration, most of the country is still in the dark. But that should not fool us, Mozambican leaders have learned much and more over the last decade, and despite some challenges, the country seems ready to take on a new stage of wealth and growth.

It was that learning curve that taught these leaders to seek out international expertise to support resource management training and legal framework development. On the one hand, the national oil company hired Wood Mackenzie to help it prepare for the responsibility to manage and sell its corresponding portion of the resources, which has resulted in the forming of a consortium with international oil and gas trader Vitol, in September last year. On the other, the government sought the support of more experienced energy producers and international partners, including the IMF or the World Bank. Just this month, Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi met with Norway’s Crown Prince Haakon and signed an agreement for support on natural gas resource management.

It was this concerted capacity growth that culminated in the new Petroleum Law of 2014 and on the successful bidding round for exploration blocks that took place the same year, a move that took advantage of the enormous attention the country’s acreage was receiving.

This self-actualization process combined with close, albeit sometimes slow, negotiations with the international oil companies that are leading these development efforts have resulted in final investment decisions worth dozens of billions of dollars for the development of liquefied natural gas plants in Mozambique.

Enormous Economic Opportunity

As it stands, Total’s 12.9mn t/yr Mozambique LNG project (which it took over from Anadarko) is expected to enter production in 2024. The latest news indicates that ENI’s 3.4mn t/yr Coral South FLNG project is on schedule to come online in 2022. And just last week, the Mozambican Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy said it expected FID from the ExxonMobil-led 15.2mn t/yr Rovuma LNG scheme by June 2020. The project is expected to start operating by 2025.

The implications of this are tremendous. Just in foreign direct investment, Total’s USD$25 billion investment in the LNG plant amounts to more than two times Mozambique’s current GDP. Not to mention the trickle-down effect on job creation, supply and associated services industries, etc, and that’s just one of the projects to be developed in an area that is far from properly explored. Together, the three projects are estimated to bring up to USD$54 billion in investment over the next few years.

Further, taking into account the relatively low domestic needs for natural gas in Mozambique, these three projects alone could place the country among the five biggest LNG exporters in the world, up there with Qatar, Australia, Malaysia and the United States.

However, if the domestic needs are small now, they are expected to quickly rise. The government has wisely negotiated for part of the production to be diverted to the domestic market, which can be used for power generation, to feed a gas-based industry of fertilizers and petrochemicals, to fuel homes or even to export via pipeline to neighbouring countries.

Already, the government has secured multilateral financing for a 400MW gas-fired power plant and transmission line to the capital Maputo, which will draw on national gas production and will dramatically contribute to improve power reliability in the capital.

To help accelerate the industry’s development, Mozambican officials were at the Subsea Expo in Aberdeen to showcase the country’s opportunities to North Sea companies. The aim is to secure a well-established supply chain that will support a streamlined development of the industry, as well as bring expertise into the country and promote the development of indigenous companies and workforce.

All these developments are making investors excited and analysts optimistic. Rating agency Fitch forecasts that natural gas production in Mozambique will climb 26.5% per year in the run up to 2029 and that will fuel an average 12.4% GDP growth per year throughout the decade.

These are fantastic news for a country that has suffered so dramatically with the combined effect of the Idai and Kenneth cyclones last year, which affected much of the economic activity and stranded GDP growth in 2019 at 1.9%. Already, the African development Bank sees a rebound in 2020, forecasting a 5.8% growth for 2020.

And that is another reason the development of Mozambique’s natural gas resources will be paramount for the future of the country. It will allow for the development of a more diversified and resilient economy, that will be less subject to external shocks.

Cautionary Tales

The landscape is so momentous for Mozambique at this point in time, that it is of paramount importance to get things right. We have had too many African stories of grand plans gone wrong and we do not need another one. The future of the country is at stake and that of its people.

So far, Mozambican leaders have shown resolve to push forward suitable policies and facilitate the industry’s development, but good governance and civil society participation have been shown again and again to be fundamental pillars of successful resource management.

Already, the country battles violence in its northern region, in the site where one of the LNG plants is to be developed. Armed insurgents, allegedly with an extremist religious agenda, have been attacking small villages in the region and foreign workers. The operating companies have requested the government to send in the army to help control the situation. Some reports indicate that some of these insurgents come from extremely poor backgrounds and have been radicalized based on the idea that the oil and gas companies are there to steal their resources and that no one will benefit. Here is where the need to integrate the population comes into play, not just through local content policies and by creating employment opportunities for them, but also by educating them about what is being developed, what to expect and how that will affect and benefit them.

This needs to be combined with strict transparency and resource management policies, upheld by institutions with the authority to implement regulation. This month, the Mozambican Centre for Public Integrity indicated that the country could have lost a considerable amount of money simply for failing to certify the real costs of natural gas projects declared by the companies in the period prior to 2015.

These events hurt the public image of the industry and spur social unrest at a time when the country should be focusing on maximizing the positive effects of this sector for the economy and ensuring that every Mozambican stands to gain from the country’s wealth.

Allies like Russia and the US have offered to help with the security situation. Others have offered cooperation in resource management, and their support should be welcomed but, it is on the shoulders of Mozambican leaders that the responsibility of a lifetime falls to make the best decisions for the future of their country and their people. They cannot let them down.

Man Creates “Berlin Wall” In Matrimonial Bed

By A Correspondent- A Bulawayo woman who has allegedly endured sexual starvation for a long time was left with no choice but to drag her husband to the courts for denying her conjugal rights and abusing her physically and verbally.

A seemingly sexually frustrated Thembekile Moyo said her husband Gwinyai Musesengwe, a nurse at United Bulawayo Hospitals, was not only denying her conjugal rights but also complimented and proposed other women in her presence.

She said her husband, in a bid to keep a distance between them in bed, had created a “boundary” so that she doesn’t feel his body in an intimate way.

Moyo who was seeking a protection order against her husband described her sexual starvation and abuse she had been subjected to as follows:

“Gwinyai Musesengwe who is my husband and works at UBH as a nurse is physically, emotionally and verbally abusing me almost on a daily basis. He beats me up, he scolds me and shouts at me for no apparent reason. When I asked him not to harass me, he said I should not compare him with other men whom I’m used to.

“He also deprives me of my conjugal rights and he sets a boundary between us every day as we sleep. I am afraid that if he continues depriving me my conjugal rights it will push me to engage in extra-marital affairs, something which I believe is not good to do.

“He also isolates me socially, as he doesn’t want me to talk to my friends. He demands that I should stay indoors. Whenever my siblings phone me, he shouts as they listen claiming that they didn’t want me to get married to him,” complained Moyo.

She said her husband also took pleasure in humiliating her.

“He sleeps away from home. I also have scars on my head which I suffered as a result of his physical abuse. I am afraid that, if he continues, abusing me he will end up killing me. I have also suffered a heart attack as a result of his persistent abuse,” said Moyo.

Musesengwe, who apparently feared the humiliation of a trial, didn’t come to court to defend himself leading the presiding magistrate Adelaide Mbeure to grant an order in favour of his wife, in which she ordered him not to verbally, emotionally and physically harass her or threaten her in any way.-BMetro

Goblins Haunt Primary School Pupils

By A Correspondent- Five pupils at Mhlanga Mlambo Primary School in Lupane, Matabeleland North were left rolling on the ground after invisible things thrashed them while they were playing at the school grounds.

The situation escalated at the school leading to the closure of the institution on 10 February. Parents with the permission of the chief have engaged a traditional healer to conduct cleansing. Community members contributed $10 per homestead towards meeting the costs of the cleansing.

A teacher who spoke on condition of anonymity said the problem started on 10 February during break-time when pupils were playing at the school grounds.

He said: “A Grade Three pupil came running to us at the staff room and informed us that two Grade Four pupils had become hysterical and begun screaming while rolling on the ground saying they were being beaten by invisible things,” said the source.

He said they rushed to the school ground.

“We found them wriggling on the ground while one of them was frothing. We performed first aid and resuscitated her. We took her to a clinic because she was complaining of fever. She was treated and discharged,” said the source.

The  source added: “The following day three pupils who are in Grade One, Two and  Six from different families were seen rolling on the ground after they were tripped while running away from the things believed to be goblins. We rushed to the playing ground and conducted first aid, after that they started to complain of abnormal heat in their bodies. We rushed them to a clinic.”

Following that parents raised a red flag over the issue and they agreed that the school had to be temporarily closed for a cleansing.

“Parents convened a meeting and agreed that they had to enlist the services of a traditional healer to cleanse the school. We agreed that each villager will contribute $10, so far we have raised $2 700, and we hope other villagers will chip in. We want the cleansing to be done on Saturday because most of the parents will be available,” said a parent.

Chief Mabhikwa confirmed: “After getting the greenlight from the villagers who engaged a traditional healer to cleanse Mhlanga Mlambo primary school because there were things which were tormenting pupils, we hope the problem will be solved as soon as possible because we want pupils to pursue their education.”

Lupane District Schools Inspector  Lovemore Ncube said:

“We are monitoring  the situation and we are happy that the local leadership has made efforts to solve the problem at the school. It is our hope that sanity will prevail soon.”-BMetro

Public Schools Fail To Meet Operational Costs

By A Correspondent- Public Schools in Zimbabwe are failing to meet operational costs after the government turned down their proposals to increase school fees.

School heads who spoke to The Herald observed that the situation is being worsened by the soaring inflation.

One headteacher said:

The increments we applied for, that were duly discussed, proposed and voted on by the school development association (SDA) of parents, and based on a budget that was looking at simply maintaining standards, have not been approved.

It is bad enough for all schools. But for schools with boarding facilities, it is extra difficult. It is a daily headache to feed the children.

Prices of commodities have, for the past twenty-four months been going up and increasing fees was a strategy to cover the variance.

The government, on the other hand, argues that increased fees are exclusionary as they can only be afforded by rich people while the have-nots will be forced to drop out of school.-Statemedia

Mugabe Nephew Tears Into “Trivial” Mnangagwa

Chinese Technical Team Heading To Zim Over Coronavirus

By A Correspondent- China is set to send a technical team for a needs assessment at Zimbabwe’s Wilkins infectious diseases hospital in Harare.

This was announced by the Chinese ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Guo Shaochun after visiting the isolation centre on Thursday.

Shaochun said that this was meant to boost Zimbabwe’s preparedness against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

He added:

China would like us to assist African countries in fighting against coronavirus within our ability; that is why we came here and to discuss that possibility of upgrading some basic conditions of this hospital

The virus which was first reported in China in December 2019 has now rapidly spread to more than two dozen countries killing thousands of people.

As of Thursday, 12 cases had been confirmed cases in Africa as follows:

  • Algeria – 5
  • Egypt – 2
  • Morroco – 1
  • Nigeria – 1
  • Senegal – 1
  • South Africa – 1
  • Tunisia – 1

The rate at which the virus is worrying particularly considering that most health sectors in developing countries are incapacitated to prevent and or contain the virus.

Philanthropist and founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates warned that the virus might kill more than ten million in Africa due to the state of the health systems on the continent.-Statemedia

Zim Diplomat Arrested In US

By A Correspondent- A Zimbabwean top diplomat, Macmillan Moyana, 35 was arrested for allegedly barging into a home in Montgomery County, United States while shouting incoherently.

Moyana reportedly went to a house along Tulip Drive at 2:20 AM on a Friday in late January where he simultaneously banged the door and shouted “Madam, Madam! It’s you,” shocking the owner of the house who had her two young children.

ABC’s Washington D.C. affiliate, WJLA TV, reported. that the owner of the house opened the front door of her house thinking it was a friend, family member or neighbour in need of assistance.

When the door opened, Moyana reportedly tried to push the door, forcing entry into the house, hitting the woman with the door as he did. He is also believed to have broken the panel of the door but the owner of the house was able to force him back and lock the door.

Moyana is said to have continued to shout “Madam!” from outside the home, went window to window, banging on them loudly while the woman was calling the police.

He was later arrested and held at the Montgomery County Detention Center on charges of home invasion, second-degree assault, third-degree burglary, reckless endangerment, and trespassing which all carry a combined total of up to 50 years in prison.

Moyana was however granted diplomatic immunity. The Zimbabwean embassy in the USA claims that Moyana is back in Zimbabwe. The cause of Moyana’s behaviour is not known.-WJLA

“The Season Of Political Psychosis Is Upon Us”

by Innocent Mujeri- We are in trouble comrades. Very big trouble. The political stage has been invaded by people of questionable morals.

People with highly deranged minds are now grand actors in the Zimbabwean political arena. The political pulpit now has preachers who have mastered the art of venting verbal obscenities to their congregants.

Don’t get lost dear reader. I am referring to two men, Job Sikhala, the MDC National Vice chairperson and Zengeza West Member of Parliament, and Jonathan Moyo, the fugitive G40 kingpin who have invaded our political space and are causing unnecessary chaos.

Sikhala and Moyo are trying harder to outdo each other and they have since employed vulgarities as a strategy of remaining politically relevant. Because of these two political novices, the season of political madness is fully upon us comrades.

We are in a season where a grown-up man brags about producing the biggest fart in the world. We are in a season where Sikhala, an opposition political novice, is trying to present himself as more aggressive than his clueless leader Nelson Chamisa

This is the season we are comrades. The season of foolish political predictions by the disgraced Jonathan Moyo who is cooking up military coups in his fertile imagination and presenting them as reality. Let’s first talk about Sikhala, the farting big man.

Sikhala is a giant. He is no small man. Most of his trousers are tailor made as his size is not easily available in boutiques.

Sikhala is that man who thought he could dethrone ZANU PF with his MDC 99 thing. He is the same Sikhala who once quit MDC in early 2000 citing clueless leadership as his reason for departure. This is Sikhala for you comrades.

The guy is blessed with a huge body frame but a little mind. Whenever he opens his mouth to speak, you are assured of verbal vulgarities coming out of his mouth. Most of his speeches are high sounding rubbish bent on inciting the public to commit acts of violence.

Given that Sikhala has a deficiency of a great mind but when he is in trouble he does not resort to using his little mind to solve the problem. Instead, he resorts to verbal abuses to save himself.

Sikhala is indeed a madman walking. Last year Sikhala because of his reckless utterances was charged with treason and he was to have his day in Bikita Magistrate court. Sikhala was taken in a police van to Bikita but in his foolishness he thought if he pollutes the air in a small van by producing gas then he might escape from police custody. Imagine the amount of smelly gases that can be produced by such a big man.

Sikhala proudly told people in Bikita that he farted in a police van in a bid to escape. I heard someone jokingly saying Sikhala’s fart can be used as an opium drug to make patients sleep while waiting for theatre. This is the man who think he has ideas that can move the country forward. Shame on you Wiwa.

Zimbabweans need a man who is progressively minded not the one who prides himself in producing farts. Zimbabweans need a man who preaches peace and tolerance not one who incites violence.

The man Zimbabweans need is none other His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Dear reader, Sikhala is not the only mad man in town. He has a counterpart by the name Jonathan Moyo.

The fugitive disgraced G40 politician, Jonathan Moyo, is slowly becoming a strong candidate for Ingutsheni Hospital, a largest psychiatric hospital located in Bulawayo, which treats mental patients.

The way Moyo speak and reason are making me doubt if the guy is indeed a professor. Real learned man do not reason or speak the way Moyo do.

On 29 January this year, Moyo tweeted that momentous events are going to take place in the month of February. His tweet reads, “For keen students of Zimbabwean history, this February is threatening to replace November as the month of momentous events!”.

February has since passed and nothing newsworthy happened. The only news we got in February was of Moyo bankrolling the 2018 MDC campaigns.

Mlevu as Moyo is popularly known by some people, thought February will not come to an end so that his foolish prediction will not be scrutinized.

Moyo is now referring to the suspension of Godfrey Tsenengamu and Lewis Matutu by ZANU PF as a momentous event that happened in February. Surely the guy is smoking a hazardous substance.

The suspension of the two was a non-event as it didn’t affect the operations of the ruling party or that of the government.

Jonathan Moyo must be reminded that he is now a nobody in Zimbabwean politics and his tweets will not change anything in Zimbabwe. His tweets can be likened to a dog barking at an elephant. Hazvichinje chinhu.

Moyo as a professor must know that those in glass houses should not throw stones. We don’t want to parade his infidelities when he was the Minister of Information and Publicity but he now wants to present himself as a saint.

Moyo is a crook and a thief who siphoned ZIMDEF funds for his own self gain. But we are morally upright people and because of that we will not disclose Moyo’s bedroom dealings with female members of the disgraced G40 faction.

Moyo and Sikhala are corona viruses in Zimbabwean politics and should be shunned and ignored by all progressive Zimbabweans.

Renewal Of Sanctions A Direct Result of Failure to Adhere to Promises Made | FULL TEXT

PEOPLE’S PARTY – PRESS STATEMENT
SANCTIONS RENEWAL BY THE UNITED STATES
The Emmerson Mnangagwa administration pretends to be surprised over the renewal of United States sanctions on ZANU PF elites. After the military coup of November 2017 that overthrew former President Robert Mugabe, Emmerson Mnangagwa was presented with an excellent opportunity to change the political trajectory of the nation of Zimbabwe; an excellent opportunity to unite Zimbabweans across the political divide. He failed to do so. Instead, his presidency has been characterised by summary arrests of opposition members, execution of unarmed civilians by the military on August 1 and January 14th.

Despite a history of human rights violations, the people of Zimbabwe, the international community and indeed Zimbabweans in the diaspora converged and gave Emmerson Mnangagwa an opportunity to distinguish himself from his predecessor.

In fact, in a meeting with US senators, Jeff Flake and Chris Coons in 2018, Emmerson Mnangagwa assured Zimbabweans and indeed the international Community that real reforms would be implemented. This has not happened.
The People’s Party is concerned with the direction the country has taken. The people are suffering whilst those connected to the Mnangagwa administration live lavish lives. The deep economic problems, are a result of mis-governance, corruption and the deep-rooted patronage culture. The People’s Party will not continue to watch this regime impoverish the citizens of Zimbabwe.

The renewal of the US sanctions on the Zanu PF elite is a direct result of failure to adhere to promises made. The world is a global village and the Emmerson Mnangagwa can’t continue to hold Zimbabweans hostage to primitive politics, whilst the rest of the world is moving forward. The unilateral amendment of a Peoples Constitution agreed in 2013 to after a people’s referendum without going back to the people, is further proof of a regime that refuses to change.

We therefore call upon the regime to do the right thing, institute REAL reforms, implement Motlanthe Commission recommendations, investigate the military killings and bring the perpetrators to book and deal decisively with corruption.

Fears Of Hardcore Criminals Coming Back To The Society Allayed

……….as Cabinet okays proposed General Amnesty

By Innocent Mujeri- The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana, has allayed fears that had initially gripped the nation when Government announced its plans to pardon thousands of prisoners, by informing the nation that the proposed general amnesty is not applicable to hard-core criminals, a local publication reported.

Taking to his micro-blogging site, Mangwana clarified that prisoners incarcerated for murder, treason, rape or any sexual offenses, carjacking, robbery, stock theft and public violence would not qualify for the Presidential Amnesty, dispelling fears, that the hard-core criminals such as the infamous machete gangs were set to be readmitted into the society because of the amnesty.

Zimbabweans can now be assured that their lives will not be exposed to any dangerous criminal elements when the amnesty is effected since only those with minor offences, the sick and the old will be set free.

Citizens who spoke to this publication applauded government’s decision of keeping rogue elements behind bars.

One Plaxedes Mudyiwa of Hatfield said she felt relieved after learning that those incarcerated for serious crimes such as rape are not going to be pardoned.

“My niece was raped in 2014 and the rapist, who is a relative was jailed for 17 years. We were initially afraid when we learnt that prisoners are going to be pardoned. But when we learnt that those jailed for rape and other serious crimes will not be pardoned, we felt relieved as we don’t want to see the man who raped my niece again”, said Mudyiwa.

Tinotenda Amos of Dzivarasekwa said violent people such as machete gangs must remain bars and applauded government for pardoning those jailed for low level crimes.

Mbuya Masawi of Mbare said she was initially struck with fear when she learnt that prisoners are going to be released from jails. She only released a sigh of relief when she learnt that hardcore criminals will remain in jails.

The proposed general amnesty is a welcome development as it will ease the burden on the national coffers. The country is currently committing thousands of dollars toward prison upkeep and prisoners’ welfare.

Furthermore, the general amnesty is a clear sign that the New Dispensation doesn’t view prisons as places to punish offenders but they regard prisons as rehabilitation centres were prisoners are morally reconfigured for reinstatement into society.

This is not the first time the President has pardoned prisoners in the New Dispensation, the first time was in 2018, where 3 000 prisoners were pardoned under Presidential mercy.

Previously, beneficiaries of the general amnesty included women (excluding those imposed with death penalty), juveniles, the disabled, those above 60 years of age who would have served a third of their sentence, the terminally ill and prisoners who have served at least a quarter of their sentence.

The Zimbabwean constitution empowers the President to pardon or reduce sentences of prisoners.

Section 112 (1) of the constitution titled Power of mercy reads as follows; The President, after consultation with the Cabinet, may exercise the power of mercy, that is to say, may-   a. grant a pardon to any person concerned in or convicted of an offence against any law;   b. grant a respite from the execution of a sentence for any offence for an indefinite or specified period;   c. substitute a less severe punishment for that imposed for any offence; or   d. suspend for a specified period or remit the whole or part of a sentence for any offence or any forfeiture imposed in respect of any offence; and may impose conditions on any such pardon, respite, substitution or suspension.

President Mnangagwa’s Presidential mercy is non-partisan, in 2018 Yvonne Musarurwa, the then Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) youth deputy secretary was among the pardoned.  She was serving a 20-year jail sentence for the murder of Inspector Petros Mutedza in May 2011.

The date for the release of prisoners and categories of prisoners who qualify for the amnesty will soon be published in the Government Gazette once President Mnangagwa has approved it as enshrined in Section 112 (3) of the constitution which states that the grant of a pardon or respite from execution of sentence or the substitution or suspension of a sentence must be published in the Gazette.

OPINION: “Chamisa- The Eloquent Confused Political Novice”

By Chipo Mutasa- A great musician is defined by the depth of his lyrics not his guitar prowess. In Zimbabwe we have a number of good guitarists but most of them are living under the shadows of the likes of Alick Macheso.

This is so because most of Macheso’s songs are pregnant with messages that touches on people’s lives. Macheso’s lyrics are just awesome and on point.

The same can be said of the Zimbabwean political fraternity which is jam-packed with a lot of charlatans who masquerade as seasoned politicians. Most of our politicians can be likened to good guitarists with terrible compositions. The lyrics of their political songs are as bad as rotten eggs, no wonder ZANU PF continues to rule the roost.

The political charlatans mostly confuse their eloquence with intelligence and sometimes they confuse good diction with meaningful messages.

One of these is none other than the Movement for Democratic Change Alliance (MDC-A) leader Nelson Chamisa. Chamisa recently turned 42 but his political shenanigans resemble that of a two year old toddler.

There is an old English adage that says life begins at 40. If the adage is true, maybe that’s the reason Chamisa is behaving like a toddler. Maybe indeed his life started at 40 and he is now a 2 year old boy.

Chamisa is an ambitious young man who possesses wild and teenage like dreams. His unlimited ambitions have clouded the way he thinks and articulate issues. Most of his speeches has turned out to be choreographed comedies that should not be taken seriously.

No doubt, the guy is eloquent when he speaks. However, the degree of his eloquence is lost due to his foolish reasoning which translate into theatrical speeches. Chamisa’s half-baked responses during interviews render useless his average oratory skills.

When he opens his mouth to speak, we are assured of a tonne load of rubbish that cannot be digested by sane people.

Only his supporters whom he termed “stupid” can applaud when Chamisa speaks.

Recently Chamisa visited South Africa on a mission he, in his wisdom or lack of it foolishly duped “Seeking Political Solutions for Zimbabwe”

One then wonders how Chamisa can seek political solutions for Zimbabwe in a foreign country that has nothing to do with Zimbabwe. Even an average street person should know better that solutions to Zimbabwean problems can only be proffered by the locals not someone from across the Limpopo.

A foreigner can only come to facilitate a dialogue, not to prescribe solutions to our challenges.

No country is devoid of challenges and Zimbabwe is not an exception. However, His Excellency President Emerson Mnangagwa opened a door, through the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD), for all political players to discuss and proffer solutions to challenges bedevilling our motherland.

POLAD is a platform created for all 2018 Presidential candidates who had progressive ideas on how the country could move forward. It is a platform I can best describe as a gamut of varied thoughts. Ideas are shared and proposals made as to how we can best develop our nation from the current sluggishness.

Chamisa with his usual selfish and egocentric tendencies shunned the olive branch that has been extended by President Mnangagwa.

Surprisingly he rushes across the border to complain that he is yet to see President Mnangagwa. Does he want the President to pay him a visit at his residence?

If he thinks that the President will pay him a visit, then his political naivety and inflated ego have reached unimaginable proportions. In fact he is hallucinating as no such thing will happen. If he wishes to see President Mnangagwa as he allege on an interview on SABC, he then needs to rush and join others in POLAD before the door closes for good.

In South Africa, Chamisa presented himself for interviews at SABC, ETV, Power 98.7 and Newzroom Afrika. As much as he was fluent in his responses, the nonsense that characterised his responses made him look like a political clown. Even the interviewer at Newzroom Afrika, had a torrid time trying to suppress his laughter as Chamisa’s responses were so shallow, pointless and full of meaningless riddles.

For instance, Chamisa was asked by J.J of Newzroom Afrika if President Mnangagwa is corrupt. The boy’s response was a hilarious one. “I said the head”, that was Chamisa’s response. The follow up question was, “He is the head” and Chamisa replied “Let’s examine the head, the fish rots from the head”.

Chamisa’s riddles were too much for the comprehension of the interviewer and I am sure to those listening. He failed to articulate a simple no or yes and his went to give weird responses exposing him for being all froth and no beer as we have been suspecting the whole time.

The MDC-A leader reached an all low when he said “South Africa is not xenophobic”. This was during his interview on Power 98.7 in South Africa. Such a shocking contradiction from many progressive people’s views shocked even the interviewer who spent almost 30 seconds starring at Chamisa in disbelief.

The xenophobic tendencies of the South Africans have been denounced even by President Cecil Ramaphosa. But Chamisa claims such things are not there in South Africa. Maybe he is desperately looking for regional and international acceptance. But that is not the way to do it.

Maybe, the politically greenhorn Chamisa is not yet ripe for international platforms and this might be the reason he struggled with his interviews in South Africa. Remember dear reader, the humiliating interview Chamisa had with Stephen Sacker on BBC Hardtalk, apparently the young does not learn.

The valuable advice that one can give him is that, he should stay away from international television channels as his incompetence and immaturity can expose how politically immature he is.

Villagers Contribute Money To Cleanse School After Invisible Things Beat Up School Children

Lupane District Schools Inspector  Lovemore Ncube said : “We are monitoring  the situation and we are happy that the local leadership has made efforts to solve the problem at the school. It is our hope that sanity will prevail soon.”

Coronavirus Protective Measures

Basic protective measures against coronavirus
Below are some basic protective measures one can take to reduce chances of getting the disease.

Wash your hands frequently
Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.

Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Maintain social distancing
Maintain at least one metre distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain a virus.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Practice respiratory hygiene
Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze.

Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you.

If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care

Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.

Why? National and local authorities will have the most up-to-date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility.

REPORT: “MDC Internal Pressure Group Pushes To Have Chamisa And Hwende Arrested For Financial Irregularities”

Nelson Chamisa

A report by a local publication has claimed that some senior MDC officials are pushing for the arrest of party leader Nelson Chamisa and secretary-general Chalton Hwende over allegations of misappropriating ZW$2 million from party coffers.

According to the report, the development comes amid revelations of internal fissures within Zimbabwe’s biggest opposition party.

Claimed the report:

“The opposition figures have roped in government officials, including Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi, in their bid. Contacted for comment, Ziyambi confirmed being approached by MDC officials over the funds.

The money, which has been mentioned in view of an impending internal audit, is believed to be part of the funding the party receives from Treasury annually as provided for under the Political Parties Finance Act.

MDC insiders told the Zimbabwe Independent that the matter has added to the serious divisions and infighting in the party, with some opposition hawks opposed to Chamisa’s continued leadership of the movement smelling blood and pushing for criminal charges to be pressed against the firebrand youthful politician.

Chamisa’s supporters have, however, dismissed the allegations, saying they are being levelled by a group of “disgruntled” party members, whom they accused of working with his opponents in a move meant to embarrass him. They said there is no substance in the allegations. The officials also say Chamisa had, in fact, been transparent by ordering an audit given that the party’s books had not been inspected for over a decade.

Several camps, some of which are based on tribe, are emerging in the MDC although there are two main factions, one led by Chamisa, and another by his long-term rival Douglas Mwonzora.

“The case in which ZW$1,9 million was stolen and used for other purposes other than party activities has been a major issue in the party since the case was made public and some are saying arrests should be made,” an MDC official said. “I think you will understand that, previously, the task of handling party finances lay squarely with the secretary-general, but that changed with the amendment of the party’s constitution at the 2014 congress to give the president more control of party finances.

So in this case, there are some people in high positions who are smelling blood and are fancying their chances that this time they have their man. Should auditors confirm that indeed the money was stolen, it is highly likely that the matter will be reported to the police.”

As part of the push, a group of discontented MDC officials have approached the government, seeking to be furnished with details on the exact amount of money the party received under the Political Parties Finance Act since the death of founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai in February 2018.

Edwin Dzambara, chairperson of an outfit calling itself Defending Morgan Tsvangirai Legacy (DMTL), which is believed to be sponsored by some MDC heavyweights, confirmed in an interview with the Independent this week the ongoing push for Chamisa’s arrest.

“We have approached the Justice ministry seeking a written clarification on how much the party has received since the death of Morgan Tsvangirai. The ministry has promised to furnish us with such information in two weeks and we are waiting for that correspondence from them,” Dzambara said.

“We want to demand for the accounting of that money. We want to compare if what the party got tallies with the programmes and events which the party undertook. Imagine that at the congress in Gweru last year, people had to bring their own food and find their own accommodation. There was not even water to drink and yet the party has been receiving various amounts of money all this time.

“So this is what we want to establish and, if we realise there are anomalies, like we suspect, we will definitely file a police report. We need to establish all the facts. We are gathering evidence before we make the police report.”

Mwonzora, who has been linked to the outfit, distanced himself from the development, saying: “I am not involved at all in those things. I am concentrating on my roles (as deputy secretary for international relations) in the party and in parliament, nothing else,” he said.

Ziyambi said:

“Yes, they came and made an inquiry, but we told them that the information they want was published in the Government Gazette and they can check it out for themselves rather than bothering us.”

MDC deputy spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka said the party was “officially” not aware of any misappropriation of funds, but should there be, auditors, who have already begun working on the party’s financial books, will be able to detect it.

“Officially, we are not aware of any missing money and the treasurer-general of the party recently issued a statement categorically stating that neither he nor the president of the party has received any such report. All we have seen are alarmist press reports,” Tamborinyoka said.

“But what I want to reiterate is that consistent with a resolution of congress and with the character and culture of transparency and accountability, congress resolved that there be annual audits of the party. And the first of these routine annual audits is currently underway.

And the results of this routine audit, the first in the history of the party, will be furnished to the relevant organs of the party. Nothing will be swept under the carpet. I am not sure as to whether anyone would call for the arrest of anyone in the party.

“That is tantamount to pre-empting the audit, which is routine and has not been eventuated by the alarmist reports of any missing money. As I said, nothing will be swept under the carpet and, if there is any skulduggery on anyone’s part, the audit will find them out.

What must be lauded, and what other political parties must follow, is the trendsetting culture by the MDC to audit its finances and to make the report public to the relevant stakeholders and organs of the party. That is a first in Zimbabwe’s politics and that is the news. Anything else at this stage is speculative.”

MDC insiders say Chamisa sanctioned the internal audit because the party’s books remained unaudited since 2009. They also say Chamisa used part of the allocation from Treasury to settle outstanding salaries of MDC employees, who had not been paid for several months.

Chamisa loyalists accuse DMTL of attention-seeking, adding that the group’s latest move was bent on destabilising the party.

An MDC official told the Independent that Dzambara is masquerading as a member of the party and was being used by the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO).

Dzambara is also accused of being part of the outfit that split the MDC in 2005 when Welshman Ncube deserted Tsvangirai.

“He is not in the structures. He is just an overzealous fellow and an attention-seeker, doing the uncalled for,” the official said.

Dzambara said he was a member of the party.

“That is expected, especially when you hunt for such important information. I would question why we did not go to any other party, if we are not members of the MDC. We are the founding members,” Dzambara said, adding that Chamisa had compromised the impending audit.

“He cannot audit himself out of the MDC. This is just a camouflage audit,” he added.Last year, the MDC received more than ZW$4 million under the Political Parties Finance Act.

Mnangagwa Stoops Down To Involve Himself In Roller Meal Distribution Issues

President Mnangagwa on Wednesday warned those involved in the distribution and selling of maize-meal to avoid corrupt practices. Speaking during the 337th Ordinary Session of the Politburo in Harare, President Mnangagwa said Government would ensure adequate grain imports to ensure food security.

He promised an improvement in the distribution of subsidised maize-meal.

“Modalities are being worked out to roll out the maize-meal coupon system,” he said.

“I call upon all stakeholders to shun corruption in the distribution and sale of maize-meal and other essential commodities.

“Furthermore, we appeal to manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers to desist from wantonly increasing prices of basic commodities.

“Rest assured that Government is doing all that is possible to stabilise the macro-economic fundamentals.”

On Tuesday, Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) public relations officer Mr Garikai Chaunza announced that they had imported 10 000 tonnes of maize from South Africa.

“We are, however, waiting for a review of the price of roller-meal subsidy from Government so that we pump the product into the market and hope to improve the supply of the commodity within the next 30 days,” he said.

Recently, the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement chaired by Justice Mayor Wadyajena revealed that two large millers benefited from wheat imports paid for by US$27,6 million which the GMAZ received from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.

English Premier League Bans Pre Match Handshakes Between Players To Curb Coronavirus Spread

The English Premier League, the biggest soccer league in the world, will no longer shake hands before matches amidst rising coronavirus concerns.

The league made the announcement Thursday, saying that the fair-play handshake will be gone “until further notice based on medical advice,” a statement from the league reads.

But the rest of the pre-game ritual will be the same, the league said.

“Clubs and match officials will still perform the rest of the traditional walk-out protocol ahead of each fixture,” the statement says. “On entering the field of play, the two teams will continue to line up, accompanied by the Premier League music, then players from the home team will walk past their opposition without shaking their hands.”

Coronavirus is spread through droplets from the nose and mouth, and can be transmitted via handshakes. The EPL isn’t the only place nixing handshakes — politicians around the world have also been seen substituting the greeting for elbow bumps.

Meanwhile, in Italy, fans have been prohibited from attending sporting events because of the outbreak. Italy has seen a dramatic uptick in coronavirus cases in recent weeks.

South Africans Welcome Coronavirus With A Huge Humour – See Pictures

South Africans are the true definition of “If I die, I die”. The joke about everything?. The Country recorded their first case of CoronaVirus on Thursday March 5 after a 38 year old man who visited Italy with his wife tested positive to the Virus.

But instead of panicking and spreading rumors ,South Africans welcomed the virus with humour and equally organized a Corona virus challenge on Twitter. The challenge which was aimed at various preventive methods, people should adopt to avoid the spread of the virus turns out to be a thing of fun as they took it to a whole different level.

They subsequently replaced the formerly accepted name of the virus, Covid 19 and gave it a new name “”CORY””

COVID19 which is already in over 80Countries &’ve claimed over 3,000Lives.

According to Speculations on it impact on Africa is that South Africans might suffer the Highest Case Fatality considering the burden of HIV &TB in their Country.

But South Africans Just don’t Care?

This is hilarious?

MDC Says Corruption And Human Rights Abuses Frustrating International Re – Engagement Efforts

Gladys Hlatshwato with mdc President Nelson Chamisa

The MDC says that Zimbabwe’s re-engagement drive is being frustrated by the slow pace at which reforms are being implemented, rampant corruption and violation of human rights.

The opposition party said this in a statement following the United States of America extension of sanctions on Zimbabwe with a year.

Full Statement below:

Lethargy on Reforms, Grand Corruption and Human Rights abuses seriously undermining Zimbabwe’s re-engagement thrust: US President

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) takes note of President Trump’s statement to the United States (US) Congress on the continuation of the National Emergency with respect to Zimbabwe Foreign Policy issued on March 4, 2020. The statement is an indictment on the Harare regime’s attempts to reengage the international community and a clarion call for reforms, an end to corruption and respect for human rights abuses.

Vangelis Haritatos Confirms Mnangagwa’s Belarus Land Deal

Vangelis Haritatos

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa is planning to parcel out vast tracts of prime horticultural land to the Belarusian government in a deal that will see the eastern European nation farming and exporting produce globally while capacitating local farmers, the Zimbabwe Independent has learnt.

Deputy Agriculture minister Vangelis Haritatos confirmed the development in an interview although he said discussions were still in progress. The Belarusians are interested in investing in crop and livestock production, agro-processing, input supply and local manufacturing of farm mechanisation and irrigation equipment.

Apart from engaging in farming, the Belarusians will also enter into joint ventures with local farmers, after the authorities realised that most black farmers who benefitted from the 2000 fast-track land reform programme had failed to produce enough for the country, now considered one of the most food insecure nations, according to the World Food Programme.

The government is battling to contain a devastating food crisis, which is expected to worsen following another poor rainy season. The World Food Programme estimates that a total of 7,7 million Zimbabweans are facing hunger and will need to be assisted with food by as early as next month. These include 5,5 million rural Zimbabweans and 2,2 million urbanites.

Mnangagwa sees the new agriculture investment deal as a solution to hunger which security officials say has become a security threat.A government official told the Independent this week that a contingent of Belarusian officials will arrive in the coming weeks to assess land and “hopefully lock the deal”.

Haritatos said the deal would help improve security.“Their message is clear; they want to help the Republic of Zimbabwe become food and nutrition self-sufficient once again. They want us to produce enough of our own wheat, soya beans, maize, beef, dairy, poultry, and horticulture and export the excess into the region and the world,” Haritatos said.

“The Republic of Belarus has identified Zimbabwe’s need for economic growth and intends to achieve this through financial injection to boost agricultural production of selected commodities to supply our local market, as well as the Belarusian market while activating local agro-industry to enable the exporting of produce into the region.”

Commodities that the Belarusian government potentially wants to promote include wheat, maize, soya beans, beef, dairy, poultry and horticulture.

In September 2019, a high-powered delegation led by the Belarusian chief of presidential affairs, General Victor Sheiman, visited Zimbabwe to follow up on the investment deals, including agriculture.

“When finalisation of an agreement has been made, through joint ventures that will be modelled around the identified specific commodities, Zimbabwe will be further capacitated to produce, process, and market finished products not only for our local market, but also for the Belarusian and regional markets,” Haritatos said.

“No final agreement has been signed yet, although there has been a great deal of correspondence that has been taking place between our ministry and ministry officials from the Republic of Belarus.”

Under the deal, Belarus will provide funding for machinery, equipment and related infrastructure depending on the production, processing and marketing requirements of the commodities.

The Belarusians will also get land for farming exclusively. The eastern Europeans want to engage in horticultural activities on the land with the produce being exported to Belarus and other European markets.

Last year, Mnangagwa visited Belarus, where his government claimed he sealed a number of deals ranging from supply of machinery, and equipment for agriculture, dam construction and mining.

Zimbabwe is also planning a buses deal with the Belarusians where the eastern European country will set up a bus assembling plant.AVM Africa will be involved in assembling the buses after Quest Motors and Deven Engineering lost the bid.

The buses are expected to be handed over to the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco).President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s broke government — battling to contain a terrible economic crisis — sees the provision of low-cost public transport as part of a solution to urban transport blues.

The buses deal is among the outstanding deals still to be completed following Mnangagwa’s visit to Belarus last September.

Local Government, Public Works and National Housing minister July Moyo confirmed the bus deal, but declined to give further details.

“The deal is going on well. Of course, it is a business transaction,” Moyo told the Independent.

The Lady Macbeth Of Lesotho

Maesaiah Thabane, wife of Prime Minister Thomas Thabane

GWYNnE DYER|First there was MacBeth, the Shakespeare play (1606). It is a bloody play even by Shakespeare’s demanding standards, with Lady Macbeth as the chief inciter to violence.

Then there is Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, a short novel by Nikolai Leskov (1865) that was later turned into an opera by Shostakovich. This Lady Macbeth is called Katerina, and she murders first her father-in-law, then her husband, then his nephew and heir, and finally her lover’s next mistress. Industrious to a fault, you could say.

And in 2020 we have Lady Macbeth of Maseru, the unpretentious capital of Lesotho. Maesaiah Thabane, wife of Prime Minister Thomas Thabane and therefore First Lady of Lesotho, is charged with ordering the murder of his previous wife three years ago, and he is accused of being her accomplice. She is, of course, half his age. She is 42; the prime minister is 80.

I have had several dear Basotho friends since I was a teenager and have visited the country at intervals for most of my adult life, but I must admit it is a puzzling place. There is no white settler minority, and it has none of the tribal rivalries that cripple so many other African countries. It should be better than it is.

Everybody is descended from Sesotho-speaking refugees who held out in its mountains against the Zulu armies during the Lifaqane of the early 1800s. It is poor, like many mountainous countries — 16th-Century Switzerland sent its young men abroad as mercenaries; modern Lesotho sends them to South Africa’s gold mines — but it is pretty equal.

So why has it got a very high murder rate and why are its politics so vicious? It is a democracy, but its modern history is strewn with coups, attempted coups and even military interventions to quell the fighting by South Africa (whose territory completely surrounds Lesotho). Now the prime minister and his wife both stand accused of murder.

The killing actually happened in 2017, just before Tom Thabane began his second term as prime minister, but the story goes back to 2012, when he began divorce proceedings against his wife, 58-year-old Lipolelo Thabane. She fought the case, so he just moved his girlfriend, Maesaiah Ramoholi (as she was then known), into the prime ministerial residence and began treating her as the First Lady.

Now, it was Maesaiah who accompanied Thabane on state occasions and received the official financial support a First Lady is entitled to — until Lipolelo won a court case in 2015 that acknowledged that she was still the First Lady and entitled to that money.

This judgment made no practical difference at the time, since it was issued just as Tom Thabane lost the prime ministership in one of the games of musical chairs that pass for politics in Lesotho. But in the next round of the game, in 2017, Thabane emerged as prime minister again, and suddenly that court decision mattered a lot.

Lipolelo was going to be First Lady again, receiving the honours and the money that Maesaiah thought should be hers. Two days before Thabane’s re-inauguration as prime minister, however, Lipolelo was shot to death on the dirt road leading to her house outside Maseru. A family friend who was also in her car escaped with several bullet wounds, but she could not identify the attackers.

Regrettably, attacks like this are not unknown in Lesotho, so the public (with some misgivings) accepted it as just another unresolved tragedy. Two months after Thabane took office again, Maesaiah became the new Mrs Thabane and Lesotho’s new First Lady in a wedding in Maseru’s stadium.

However, Lesotho’s police quietly continued their investigation.

Eventually, they found something interesting. Two months ago Police Commissioner Holomo Molibeli sent a letter to the prime minister whose key sentence read: “The investigations reveal that there was a telephonic communication at the scene of the crime in question … with another cellphone. The cellphone number belongs to you.”

Okay, give him a break. Thabane is 80, and he did not realise that he should be using a burner for this kind of call. Or Maesaiah did not. Whatever. But there it is: the fat is now officially in the fire.

Maesaiah fled to South Africa when an arrest warrant was issued for her in January, but eventually came back and was officially charged. Tom Thabane also went to South Africa to avoid a court appearance, allegedly for “medical reasons”, but appeared in court on February 17 and claimed that as prime minister he has legal immunity from any criminal charge.

That is questionable. The king, Letsie III, certainly has immunity, but Thabane’s claim will have to go to the High Court. Maesaiah’s trial will probably have to wait until that is decided.

Just another heart-warming story of everyday folks in Lesotho politics — but at least the rule of law still prevails.

Senegal Records Second Coronavirus Case As Zimbabwe Threatens To Depot Foreigners

Senegal Registers 2nd Coronavirus case while Zimbabwe Threatens Deportation Of Entrants - Newslibre

Correspondent|As the Coronavirus continues to spread around the globe like wildfire, African countries have become the latest to register some cases of the virus. Senegal announced it’s the second case.

According to African News, Senegal recorded its second case of COVID-19 the ministry of health confirmed in a statement late Tuesday. Authorities said the patient was a French national who arrived in Dakar on 29 Feb from Paris.

This case is similar to the first which was recorded on Monday also of a French national resident in Senegal but having flown in from France.

The second case was confirmed by the Ministry of Health of Senegal after they carried tests on the patient and measures are being undertaken by the Senegalese government to combat the virus

Nigeria is only other sub-Saharan African country with a case involving an Italian national who flew into Lagos before proceeding to an adjoining state. He is however in quarantine at a facility run by the Lagos State government.

Currently, there are 6 nations in the continent that have reported having registered cases of coronavirus which include Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, Nigeria, Zimbabwe. The big question will be on how the African nations will be combating the virus from wildly spreading.

Zimbabwe to Deport Foreigners Without Medical Clearance

Zimbabwe’s Health Minister says the country will deport foreigners who enter the country without medical clearance from their respective countries.

Minister Obediah Moyo was quoted by the state-owned Herald newspaper as saying all visitors without medical clearance from government hospitals in their respective countries will be deported.

So far only West Africa in the sub-Saharan Africa region has recorded two cases in Nigeria and Senegal. Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, and Morocco have all recorded cases but they fall under the Middle East and North Africa region under WHO classification.

CAF Changes Stance To Give Zim One Last Chance To Have Venues Inspected

The Warriors’ chances of hosting the Desert Foxes in Zimbabwe were boosted yesterday when the Confederation of African Football confirmed they will send an official to inspect both the National Sports Stadium and Barbourfields next week.

National Sports Stadium renovations
National Sports Stadium renovations

CAF have also slammed ZIFA with a US$4 000 penalty, for late notification of the match venue for the big match.

The inspector is set to arrive in Harare next Friday for a three-day tour of duty, in what represents a major step forward, in the battle to try and stage the 2021 AFCON qualifier on Zimbabwean soil at the end of this month.

The inspector will review work that has been done at the National Sports Stadium and Barbourfields and then provide recommendations to CAF officials as to whether enough has been done for either stadium to host the blockbuster match.

It’s a positive development for the spirited efforts, which are being done by the Government, which has injected millions of dollars into the refurbishment of the National Sports Stadium and Barbourfields, to try and keep the big match on Zimbabwean soil.

The renovations will continue, in the coming months, so that the country’s main stadiums will be able to host the forthcoming AFCON and World Cup qualifiers without having to worry about red flags being raised by the CAF inspectors.

The Government has reacted swiftly to the crisis while other stakeholders, including the Herentals Group of Colleges and former Premier Soccer League fixtures secretary, Beadle Musa Gwasira, have also come on board towards the same cause.

Last night, a high-powered Government delegation, led by Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Deputy Minister, Tino Machakaire, flew to Bulawayo as part of the efforts to ensure Barbourfields, just like the National Sports Stadium, would be in a condition which can persuade the inspector to give the stadiums the greenlight to host the match.

‘‘Well, there is a huge development, CAF have just advised us that an inspector is coming to Zimbabwe and will be in this country between the 11th and 14th of this month and he will inspect the National Sports Stadium and Barbourfields,’’ an official told The Herald.

‘‘This is massive because it means that, for the first time, there is a possibility that the original decision, to put a blanket ban on all the stadiums in this country from hosting international football matches, can be reversed, that is if we get our things in order.

‘‘The inspector will, after supervising the two stadiums, compile a report which will be sent to CAF and a decision will then be made based on whatever recommendations that he would have made and we are confident that with the intense work that is being undertaken, we will pass the test.

‘‘The challenge we had, in terms of the last inspection, was that Zimbabwe was given conditions which have to do with what CAF need when a country is hosting any of their big tournaments like the AFCON and CHAN finals.

‘‘Those conditions are tough to meet and it could have come to that because there was a feeling that recommendations, which were being made, were not being done and that has a tendency of hardening attitudes.

‘‘The conditions CAF require, for the hosting of the AFCON and CHAN finals, are different from those of hosting the AFCON and CHAN qualifiers and that is why you can see that while Cameroon were hosting international games at their stadiums, without any problem, they could not host the tournaments in those stadiums.

‘‘That is why the 2019 AFCON finals were then moved to Egypt and the stadiums in Cameroon are being renovated, for hosting AFCON finals and not the AFCON qualifiers, and that country will now host the Nations Cup finals next year.’’

Barbourfields remains the stadium with the best chance of hosting the match against the Desert Foxes, in the event that the inspector gives the country the greenlight to host the match, given the Bulawayo facility required the least touch-ups as per the last report.

However, there have also been concerns that, should the big game be played in that stadium, there could be some security concerns given that it can only host about 25 000 to 30 000 fans.

There has been communication between CAF and ZIFA, with the continent’s football governing body asking the local association to provide them with a stadium in this country which has been homologated to host an AFCON qualifier.

With ZIFA now aware that another inspection is coming, they can advise CAF that both the National Sports Stadium and Barbourfields are open for a further review next week, leaving the decision in the hands of the inspector.

The diplomatic offensive has been in full throttle and is set to go a step further at the weekend in South Africa with a number of meetings lined up to try and resolve the impasse.

ZIFA communications manager, Xolisani Gwesela, was not at liberty to discuss the case but CAF sources confirmed that an inspector was on the way to Harare and Bulawayo.

“We would like to thank the Government for the great commitment that they have shown in ensuring that our stadiums are refurbished and brought to the required CAF levels,’’ Gwesela said.

“Over the past few days we have seen noticeable progress on the work being done at B/F and NSS and this is clear testimony that our Government values sport as a key driver in economic development.

“We are still waiting to hear from CAF on the outcome of our appeal and the public will be advised accordingly.’’

“Mnangagwa Is Waiting For Chamisa,” Church Leader Says After Meeting With ED

Lutheran World Federation (LWF) secretary-general Martin Junge

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa says he is keen to end Zimbabwe’s worsening political and economic crises through dialogue but has been kept waiting by opposition leader Nelson Chamisa, a visiting cleric said yesterday.

This comes as dialogue between Mnangagwa and Chamisa has stalled over the insistence by the Zanu-PF leader that the youthful MDC president should join him at the Political Actors Dialogue (Polad) – a platform where he regularly meets with leaders of fringe parties who contested in the 2018 polls.

Addressing the media, following his meeting with Mnangagwa in the capital yesterday — Lutheran World Federation (LWF) secretary-general Martin Junge — said the president had told him he was keen to end the crises in the country.

“Through the leadership of Lutheran (Church) in Zimbabwe, I was able to pay a courtesy call on the President … I was glad to share what I have been able to see about the situation in the country and to engage in dialogue with him about it.

“It was a good discussion which we had and I felt an acknowledgement of the country’s situation that has been caused by different issues and how to possibly address those.

“He (Mnangagwa) referred to the efforts of the government of creating a platform for dialogue and expressed that he was keen to engage in dialogue to solve the country’s problems,” Junge said.

“I know from other parts of the world that when we have to remind ourselves of the need for dialogue and peace, it is because there is tension, frustration and fragmentation.

“So I was grateful to see the church in Zimbabwe also calling for dialogue because we know all over the world that the harder the issue is, the more you need to talk,” he said further.

Mnangagwa and Chamisa are under pressure to hold talks which are seen as the only way of extricating the country from its gigantic economic crisis.

Apart from the pain of the economic crisis — Zimbabwe is also reeling from a severe drought that has left more than half of the country’s population needing urgent food assistance, including in urban areas.

Former South African President Thabo Mbeki — who helped to broker the stability-inducing 2008 government of national unity between former opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and ex-president Robert Mugabe, who are both late — was in the country in December last year, to try and nudge Mnangagwa and Chamisa to hold direct talks.

Meanwhile, Junge said the LWF was willing to help the government to feed millions of people who are facing hunger across the country.

“Our visit here has helped us to understand the drought situation … identify how we could work closer together with the church and contribute.

“We cannot solve the problems because they are quite big and the primary responsibility for the people of Zimbabwe is with the structures and government.

“We are, however, willing to assist and we have identified ways and will be discussing how to increase our humanitarian assistance to the country,” Junge said.
The government is battling massive shortages of grain, which has hit hard the supplies of the staple maize meal across the country.

Relief agencies have said an estimated eight million Zimbabweans — including those living in urban areas — are in need of urgent food assistance.

Govt Bans Payment For Extra Lessons

Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education permanent secretary Mrs Tumisang Thabela

GOVERNMENT has, with immediate effect, banned teachers from charging for weekend extra lessons and those found wanting face disciplinary action.

The decision comes at a time when the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) is investigating schools that are demanding payment in foreign currency for extra lessons.

Teachers at six schools that have received forex payment in Harare have been ordered to reimburse the parents or guardians to avoid prosecution. Zacc is also pushing for the gazetting of a statutory instrument that criminalises conducting extra lessons for a fee.

Government has previously said it is illegal to offer extra lessons to pupils for a fee.

In an interview on the sidelines of the handover of a state-of-the-art laboratory to Selukwe Chrome Secondary School, as well as a multipurpose sports court and a bus to Impali Primary School worth over US$300 000 in Shurugwi on Wednesday, Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education permanent secretary Mrs Tumisang Thabela urged teachers to complete their syllabi on time to avoid extra lessons.

She said extra lessons maybe necessary for examination classes and pupils lagging behind, but must not be conducted at a fee or during weekends.

“Conducting of weekend extra lessons by teachers for a fee is, therefore, banned. Any extra lessons be it during the week or at the weekend shouldn’t be for a cost to the parents,” said Mrs Thabela.

She said schools can even conduct holiday enrichment lessons if the teachers identify a gaps, but only at zero budget to the parents.

“There are those enrichment lessons during the holidays under the non-formal education programmes where the schools apply to the provincial education director that they want to catch up on the syllabus over a two-week period since they must allow the learners to rest as well. So those holiday enrichment programmes we don’t stop them because, the teachers will have seen the gaps and would agree on a province or district by district level when they meet and those ones have their own regulations. They can do them but at a zero budget so that they allow children to catch up and that is only for exam classes,” said Mrs Thabela.

Zimbabwe To Intensify Precautions As South Africa Records Coronavirus Case

Minister of Health Obadiah Moyo

South Africa yesterday confirmed its maiden case, and Africa’s fourth, of coronavirus (Covid-19) and Zimbabwe expects that the former will — as it has already announced — be able to contain any spread of the new virus while precautions at the border will be intensified.

Health and Child Care Minister Dr Obadiah Moyo yesterday said following the confirmation of South Africa’s first case, Zimbabwe would also intensify efforts but hoped South African authorities would be able to track down all those who had been in contact with the infected person.

The South African patient is a 38-year-old man who had travelled to Italy with his wife. Sub-Saharan Africa’s other confirmed case, an Italian living in Nigeria, was also infected in Italy.

The other two African cases were confirmed in Algeria and Egypt. The South African couple, which has two children, was with a group of 10 people in Italy.

South Africa’s Health Ministry yesterday said the patient consulted a private general practitioner on March 3 with symptoms of fever, headache, malaise, a sore throat and a cough.

A nurse took swabs and delivered the samples to the laboratory.

The patient had been staying at home in self-quarantine since Tuesday and already South Africa’s Emergency Operating Centre has identified the man’s potential contacts by interviewing the patient and doctor, who is now also living in isolation.

The confirmed first coronavirus case in South Africa has raised awareness in Zimbabwe of the need to follow precautions laid down by medical authorities and, as the minister announced, ensure people take border checks seriously.

Commenting on the confirmed case in South Africa, Dr Moyo said Zimbabwe needed to be better prepared than ever before.

He said previous false alarms had been good drills in preparation for coronavirus and had helped check and improve the efficiency of systems put in place.

“Yes, it is frightening that it is now around the corner, but we also hope that South Africa will be thorough and be able to pick up all contacts the case had been in touch with,” said Dr Moyo.

He said as part of efforts to strengthen Zimbabwe and the global fight against Covid-19, Government would continue adhering to and upholding World Health Organisation (WHO) regulations, guidelines and advisories on travel requirements.

“As such, all travellers and visitors into the country, including those from countries with confirmed Covid-19 cases, will be screened at ports of entry into Zimbabwe.

“However, travellers with signs and symptoms suggestive of Covid-19 (fever, cough, shortness of breath, etc) will be referred immediately to designated isolation centres for further clinical examination and assistance,” said Dr Moyo in a statement last night.

Government added that no additional requirements on travellers, visitors and airlines outside those already provided for under WHO regulations, guidelines and advisories were needed.

Asked on Zimbabwe’s preparation for coronavirus, World Health Organisation country representative Dr Alex Gasasira said Harare was making progress towards preparing to respond to the disease.

He said the country has one isolation centre, which is Wilkins Hospital in Harare and needs to establish more isolation centres throughout the country.

“Zimbabwe is preparing. In some areas progress has been made but as the Minister has said, there are some areas that still need to be strengthened,” said Dr Gasasira.

I Don’t Know Why Mwonzora Is Still A Member Of The Party. ..”

Farai Dziva|MDC official Antony Taruvinga has called for Douglas Mwonzora’s dismissal from the opposition party.

Taruvinga believes Mwonzora has become a liability to the party.

“I do not know why Mwonzora is still a member of the party up to this hour but whatever the reason, the cost, by far, outweighs the reason. Total long term liability,” argued Taruvinga.

His sentiments were echoed by Munashe Mhondoro: Douglas Mwonzora, has been a big liability to our party for a long time now, since congress, he must go, for sure he will go, if he crossed the red line. Period.

Redgis Jonas R
Huvengwa commented:
Mwonzora is a problem ngaadzingwe nokuchimbidza party iendere mberi ichifamba zvakanaka.

However Charles Ndlovu argued:
Are you saying Mwonzora is now the enemy ? Are you saying Jonathan Moyo has now become a saint ? Are you saying Mwonzora is now a sworn enemy of the party ahead of Zanu PF and Ed ? I fail to understand this .

Is Zim Ready To Deal With Coronavirus Scourge?

By A Correspondent

South Africa has recorded its first case of Covid-19 coronavirus on Thursday morning.

In a statement the country’s Ministry of Health Zweli Mkhize said the case was detected by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).

He said the patient is a 38-year-old male who had travelled to Italy with his wife.

“The patient consulted a private General Practitioner on March 3, with symptoms of fever, headache, malaise, a sore throat and a cough. The practice nurse took swabs and delivered it to the lab where it was tested positive,” said Mkhize.

He said the patient has been in self-isolating since March 3.

Maja added, “The Emergency Operating Centre (EOC) has identified the contacts by interviewing the patient and doctor. The tracer team has been deployed to KwaZulu-Natal with epidemiologists and clinicians from NICD. The doctor has been self-isolating as well.”

He said following the incident, a press briefing will be held by the Minister of Health after a Parliamentary debate in the evening to shed more light on the issue.

Mnangagwa Vows To Stay Until 2023

Farai Dziva|In spite of conceding failure Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared that he will stay in power until 2023 and beyond…

Below is MDC’s response to Mnangagwa’s remarks:
A report in today’s Newsday in which Mnangagwa admits to failure then sensationally demands another term is not only shocking but disrespectful of the suffering Zimbabwean people.

Once the admission is made that Zanu PF has failed, that closes the matter.

A government’s presence in office is for no other reason besides delivery.

In this case delivery is not there, the economy has collapsed, there is no food, fuel and electricity yet Mnangagwa and Mthuli Ncube have consistently claimed that the country is back on track, while publicly accepting to his Politburo that he has dismally failed to deliver.

Knowing the consequences of failure, Mnangagwa now wants to focus on power retention, service is what keeps people in office.

The MDC is on record, that an illegitimate government will never deliver, it only has a narrow interest of self-aggrandisement and power retention.

If you have failed, by your own admission, why should we reward failure in 2023?

Outrage As ZIMRA Impounds Lifesaving Equipment

By Ezra Tshisa Sibanda

THE Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) on Sunday seized training equipment for doctors and nurses at Mpilo Central Hospital demanding £3 000 duty from an international organisation that sourced the kit for kidney biopsy.

This is shocking and a huge embarrassment to the country.

Over the past two decades, Zimbabwe’s healthcare system has deteriorated from being one of the best in Africa to one that needs all hands on deck if it’s going to get back the capacity to save lives. And as the ongoing Coronavirus epidemic has shown, a crisis in one power of the world can quickly spread to the rest of the world. So people in London and California can no longer say they don’t care about poor healthcare systems in Africa.

Zimbabwe has friends who say they are willing to do their part to help. That’s why Dr Nitin Kolhe and team from the Royal Derby Hospital in the United Kingdom are currently in the country’s second City Bulawayo training professionals from around Zimbabwe at Mpilo hospital in renal medicine.

It’s said Dr Kolhe wants to make the trip to Bulawayo, a yearly event and could even bring more of his colleagues to share global best practice in nephrology.

It’s therefore crucial that the way we handle visitors as a country reflects our hospitality values of Ubuntu, courtesy as well as efficiency, because that’s who we are. To do this means we must be organised and demonstrate integrity at all times.

Dr Kolhe and team didn’t need to face problems upon arrival. The hosting hospital should have applied for duty free certificates for the equipment in advance. I’m told, the Minister of Health Dr Obadiah Moyo, who has a special interest in renal medicine and Dr Mhlanga intervened when ZIMRA kept the equipment the delegation had.

These processes must not wait for a crisis or for the Ministry of Health to intervene. It gives the country a bad name and has the potential to frustrate those trying to help.

Our ZIMRA officials have an important job to do. In more ways than one, they are the face of Zimbabwe, a new visitor to the country is likely to meet, together with immigration officers. ZIMRA therefore can’t afford to have officers with cold and toxic attitudes.

I’ve had my experiences with ZIMRA and all I can say, as someone whose well travelled: Commissioner General Faith Mazani has a difficult job at her hands and needs to clean up the whole department. But I’m sure there are some who can be retrained in customer care and how to be ambassadors for our beautiful country.

Confisticating the equipment by Zimra was out of order and exposed how broken the system is.

Mpilo CEO was a big let down in all this. He failed to seek clearance for the equipment yet her knew months ago about the tour by health professional volunteers all the way from United Kingdom. These professionals are in Zimbabwe just to offer their services for free. What made the situation worse is the non availability of hard working Mpilo Hospital Clinical Director Solwayo Ngwenya who is currently on leave. Dr Ngwenya is the pillar of Mpilo Hospital and nothing moves when he is away. I’m really concerned about what will happen if he resigns and dumps Mpilo Hospital seeing that Botswana Government wants him high and low to come & join their health department.

Mliswa Urges Government To Repossess Grace Mugabe Farms

MDC-Alliance legislators yesterday defended former First Lady Grace Mugabe’s ownership of multiple farms and quashed calls by Norton legislator Temba Mliswa to repossess them.

The incident occurred in the National Assembly during the weekly question-and-answer session.

Mliswa claimed it was on record that the former First Lady had multiple farms and asked Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi, as leader of Government business in Parliament, when Government would start repossessing some of them.

President Mnangagwa is on record as saying the former First Family owned more than 10 farms.

“Government embarked on a land audit to see who was utilising land and who was not and for what reason and the multiple farm owners,” said Mliswa.

“It is on record that the former First Lady owns more than four farms and the Government has done absolutely nothing when the policy is one-man one-farm, one-woman one-farm.

The question is; what have they done with the land audit and why have they not repossessed land from the former First Lady.”

MDC-Alliance legislators interjected, with St Mary’s legislator Mr Job Sikhala shouting: “Mugabe akafa kare siyanai naye (referring to Mrs Mugabe) and “why do you want to abuse the widow.”

MDC-Alliance legislators briefly brought business to a halt, while Mliswa accused them of supporting Mrs Mugabe because she funded their campaigns in 2018 harmonised elections.

“Makapihwa mari naGrace muchi campaigner (you were funded by Grace during the elections campaign),” Mr Mliswa said.

Mrs Mugabe was the face of the G40 faction that was expelled from Zanu PF during Operation Restore Legacy in 2017.

The group has found a home in MDC-Alliance, with former Zanu PF Politburo members — Professor Jonathan Moyo and Patrick Zhuwao — openly throwing their weight behind the opposition party’s president Mr Nelson Chamisa and admitting that they fundraised for MDC Alliance campaign.-State media

The paper says Murambiwa discovered his win by using the ticket checker at a retailer.

“I thought, this is not happening! I scanned the ticket a dozen more times,” he told OLG. “It was a shock to the system. I even took a photo of the Ticket Checker!”

OLG says the realtor plans to treat himself to a new car and will put the rest of his winnings into savings.

“As a realtor, I handle big cheques all the time. It feels incredible that this one is mine,” he told OLG.

“I don’t know what to say – this feels like a dream.”

The winning ticket was purchased at Petro Canada on Main Street in Brampton.

“Reforms Key”: MDC

Gladys Hlatywayo

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) takes note of President Trump’s statement to the United States (US) Congress on the continuation of the National Emergency with respect to Zimbabwe Foreign Policy issued on March 4, 2020.

The statement is an indictment on the Harare regime’s attempts to reengage the international community and a clarion call for reforms, an end to corruption and respect for human rights abuses.

Minister Given One Week To Properly Advise The Nation On Coronavirus Readiness

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights have given Health Minister, Dr Obadiah Moyo a one-week ultimatum to ensure that the public is timeously, correctly and adequately informed on the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The lawyers’ group wants the minister to make sure that the citizenry is correctly informed on the number of infections recorded in the country and efforts the Ministry has taken to prevent and or contain the virus.

Writing on behalf of ZLHR, Godfrey Mapanga said that the organisation was concerned by Moyo’s “appearance of indifference to the real threat of this deadly virus” when the Ministry was legally bound to publish reliable information to the public of steps it has taken to deal with the deadly virus. He added:

If we do not at least hear from you regarding the steps that you wish to take to fulfil your obligation and the timeline for such steps, needless to mention that…we will consider all the options that are available to us to obtain the necessary remedies to ensure that you comply with your obligations and make information on the Corona virus is available to all members of the public.

Some members of the public accuse the government of concealing information regarding the virus.

Trouble For Mnangagwa As ZCTU Goes Around The Country Mobilising For A National Shut Down.

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) is moving across the country mobilising for a national shutdown to pressure President Emmerson Mnangagwa to address the deteriorating economic situation in the country.

ZCTU president Peter Mutasa disclosed this at the fifth labour forum meeting held in Gweru on Monday.

Mutasa, accompanied by his secretary-general Japhet Moyo and members of the ZCTU’s general council, has been on a whirlwind tour of the country’s provinces, meeting their membership to mobilise for the national shutdown.

They have visited Gweru, Masvingo, Mutare, Bulawayo and Chinhoyi and hope to reach out to the remaining five provinces in the charm offensive.

In his address to restive workers at Mkoba Hall in Gweru, Mutasa said he was prepared to die or be severely persecuted by State security agents who will try to put down the protests.

He highlighted that workers in the country had been reduced to paupers by Mnangagwa’s government to an extent that they no longer had esteem and dignity in society.

“People who started with the issue of shutdowns had understood that when you fail to get food in the house, there is someone who has caused that. If you fail to get an adequate salary, there is someone taking part of it, if you fail to have enough money for rentals and school fees, there is someone who will have taken it,” he said.

“We must ask ourselves to say what are we going to do when we sleep without eating and our kids go to school without shoes? Should we continue to be passive just hoping things will wake up normal just like that?

“Now the government wants to have 2,5% stolen from salaries of workers on top of 2% mobile transactions tax, 14% VAT [value-added tax], 35% payee, on top of rates at councils and tollgate fees. The likes of (the late MDC leader) Morgan Tsvangirai rejected such scenarios and shut down the country.”

MDC national secretary for labour, Gideon Shoko said the ZCTU was right to organise a national shutdown.

“The ZCTU is very right to follow that route. As the MDC, we certainly sympathise with the stance that the ZCTU wants to take … We, as a party, believe the populace in general understands why the ZCTU has resorted to wanting to protest,” he said.

ZCTU’s organised anti-fuel price hike protests in January last year, however, degenerated into violence and death after government responded by deploying the military in a crackdown that resulted in the death of 17 people, injuring hundreds while thousands were arrested.

Since then, government has used brute force to thwart protests.

Police Officer Steals Top Of The Range Range Rover Parked At Police Station As An Exhibit.

A POLICE officer allegedly stole an impounded R3 million top-of the range car kept at Beitbridge Police station after lying to a colleague that he had been authorised by his superior to remove the vehicle from the yard.

The car, a silver Range Rover, which was smuggled into the country from South Africa, was found abandoned near Chicago Village Business Centre on the outskirts of Beitbridge.

Sergeant Trust Mawire (35) allegedly hired a road recovery vehicle to tow the smuggled car out of the police station impound yard after lying to a police officer assigned to guard the car that he had been authorised by the station’s officer- in-charge to release the car.

He allegedly took the stolen car to an unknown destination and it was never recovered.

Mawire is now facing charges of theft of motor vehicle. This emerged when Mawire approached the High Court seeking bail pending trial.

In papers before the court, Mawire through his lawyer Mr Kholwani Ngwenya of TJ Mabhikwa and Partners, filed an application for bail pending trial at the Bulawayo High Court citing the State as a respondent.

In his bail statement, Mawire is denying the charges, arguing that there was no evidence linking him to the alleged offence.
Mr Ngwenya said there were no compelling reasons justifying his client’s continued detention at Beitbridge Remand Prison.

“It is averred that the applicant may run away if released on bail because of the gravity of the offence and the value of the car involved. However, while these may appear like sound reasons for opposition of bail, they are of no consequence in respect of the applicant who believes in his innocence to the charges proffered against him,” he said.

Mr Ngwenya said his client was not likely to abscond if released on bail.

“The applicant has not shown any propensity to flee and an assertion that he may flee should be weighed against previous actions by him to do so. The accused person has no knowledge of the alleged offence as he took no part in the removal of the vehicle from the ZRP impound yard,” he said.

Mawire argued that he was only linked to the offence by virtue of his involvement in the vehicle’s discovery in the bush.
He further argued that there was nothing, which was placed before the court to support the reasons to oppose bail.

.Mawire, who is now based in Chegutu, argued that he was a proper candidate for bail. He offered to pay $800 bail as well as reporting once every week at Chegutu Police Station until the matter is finalised.

The State, which was represented by Mr Trust Muduma, opposed the application, arguing that if released on bail, Mawire was likely to abscond and interfere with State witnesses.

According to court papers, it was stated that on September 14 last year, Mawire and his workmates found the South African registered car abandoned in a bushy area near Chicago Village Business Centre. It was suspected to have been smuggled from South Africa through an illegal crossing point along the Limpopo River.

The cops towed the car to the police station. Two weeks later, Mawire allegedly hired a road recovery vehicle to tow the stolen out of the police impound yard. He allegedly took the car to an unknown destination after allegedly convincing the police officer guarding the impound yard that he had been authorised by the officer-in-charge to released it.

While Zimbabwe Health Minister Says Zim Is 100% Ready For Coronavirus, UK Says No Health System Anywhere In The World Can Cope With The Pandemic…

FORMER Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has issued a bleak warning for the UK ahead of the expected coronavirus pandemic.

The Member of Parliament for South West Surrey told Sky News “no health system anywhere in the world can cope with a pandemic” and that there will be pressure on the NHS when coronavirus cases are “at their highest” within the UK. However, Mr Hunt also argued that if the British Government “accurately predict” when the COVID-19 cases will be at their worse then urgent treatment will be protected within the NHS.

Mr Hunt said: “No health system anywhere in the world can cope with a pandemic in a way that means it is completely business as usual.

“Professor Whitty was very open about the fact there may be some impact even on urgent treatment.

“We asked him what it would mean for cancer patients but what he said was that the impact at it’s high would be for about three weeks.

“So if you get the timing of that three weeks right, if you are able to accurately predict when it starts and when it ends, then you can do an enormous amount to make sure urgent treatment is protected.

“Because either it happens before that or it happens after that.

“But yes there are going to be impacts particularly for people that have pneumonia and respiratory disease when the pressures will be at their highest.”

Yesterday while speaking in the House of Commons for PMQs, Boris Johnson announced Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) will be available from the first day of illness under emergency legislation to tackle the coronavirus outbreak in the UK.

The Prime Minister praised people who self-isolate, adding they are “helping to protect all of us by slowing the spread of the virus” and should not lose out financially.

Mr Johnson added: “The Health Secretary will bring forward, as part of our emergency coronavirus legislation, measures to allow the payment of statutory sick pay, from the very first day you are sick, instead of four days, under the current rules.

“That’s the right way forward. Nobody should be penalised speaker for doing the right thing.”

There have currently been more than 95,000 cases of COVID-19 across the globe.

The death toll currently stands at over 3,200.

Zimbabwe Health Minister Boldly Declares That The Country Is 100% Ready For Coronavirus

As the coronavirus spreads globally, Zimbabwe says it is ready for the infection, despite a struggling health care sector and collapsing economy.

Describing the coronavirus as a “catastrophe which waits us,” Zimbabwe’s Health Minister Obediah Moyo told journalists Monday that the country had learned from previous cholera epidemics and are prepared to tackle the virus, also known as COVID-19.

“Before people come into Zimbabwe, we now have the intelligence to be able to tell from the manifest that an individual would be coming from an infested country. So our surveillance is strong,” he said. “We have even made it better by getting the latest in technology of thermal detectors in each and every country you go. It is that determinant which is the first one to trigger off the rest of the alarms. So we are 100 percent certain that we are covered.”

But Dr. Norman Matara, from Zimbabwe’s Association of Doctors for Human Rights, fears the country’s decrepit healthcare system is not ready for the challenge.

Dr. Norman Matara of Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights says Zimbabwe is one of the countries least prepared to deal with the new COVID-19 infection, March 02, 2020, in Harare.

“Right now we only have Wilkins Hospital, which is the only health quarantine facility in the country. It does not have adequate resources,” he said. “Also we do not have proper ICU beds at Wilkins. With serious infections, what we have noticed in China is that you have to have to undergo assisted breathing with ventilators. Also even protective gear for the health worker themselves, they are actually being placed under a health hazard if they are to face a patient with suspected COVID 19 infection. If that thing comes here it is going to be a disaster.”

To prepare for coronavirus, Zimbabwe has sought assistance from U.N. agencies such as UNICEF and the World Health Organization.

Dr. Wilfred Nkhoma is the acting representative of the WHO in Zimbabwe. He says African countries, including Zimbabwe, must do better to diagnose the virus and prevent it from spreading.

“What the WHO expects which is being implemented in the African region is for the countries to take responsibility for controlling it: Make information known and available to the common public, to eliminate contact, to reduce transmission and to manage cases that have already arrived… We are hoping that the few countries that have reported cases will manage those cases and will be able to contain transmission, but every country needs to be ready and no country should think that they are ready enough at this point,” said Nkhoma.

The WHO is urging African states to carry out public information campaigns on virus prevention — such as encouraging hand washing, sanitation, and reporting symptoms.

South African Rand Weakened At News Of Coronavirus Patient In The Country

Reuters |The South African Rand weakened against the dollar on Thursday after the government confirmed the country’s first case of coronavirus.

At 1500 GMT, the rand was 1.6% weaker at R15.53 per dollar.

“The rand has come under pressure as the first case of the COVID-19 coronavirus has been confirmed in South Africa,” said Bianca Botes, Treasury Partner at Peregrine Treasury Solutions.

“The markets are on edge, with many questioning the ability of government to deal with a breakout in South Africa efficiently.”

The confirmed case was a man who had visited Italy and the health minister warned the arrival of coronavirus would test the country’s health system.

On the stock market, the Top 40 index was up 0.12% to 47,618 while the broader all-share was largely flat at 52,936.

Petrochemicals group Sasol, however, was the biggest decliner on the blue-chip index, falling nearly 9% as oil prices continued to drop with no end in sight to the spread of coronavirus globally.

In fixed income, the yield on the 10-year 2030 government issue was down 1.5 basis points at 8.86%.

South Africa Coronavirus Patient Passed Through The Airport Without Showing Any Signs Of The Disease

South Africa’s health minister said on Thursday that authorities would start a wider search for contacts of the country’s first confirmed coronavirus case, revealing that he was a citizen who had passed through the main airport showing no symptoms.

The infected person had just come back from Italy.

CAF Dismisses ZIFA’s Appeal Demands Naming Of Venue Of Match With Algeria.

Felton Kamambo

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has rejected ZIFA’s appeal against its decision to ban all local stadiums from hosting international football games.

CAF arrived at the decision to sanction all local stadiums form staging international games citing lack of set international standards, meaning the senior men’s national football team, the Warriors, will host Algeria in a AFCON 2021 Group H qualifier at a neutral venue outside the country.

The Felton Kamambo-led administration had hoped that the appeal would mean CAF conduct another inspection before the Algeria clash, which has been rejected.

Meanwhile, ZIFA today failed to appear before a Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Youth Sports, Arts and Recreation where they scheduled to give oral evidence on the on the stadium ban imposed by CAF last week.

The Committee did however receive oral evidence on the state of sporting infrastructure in the country from the Sports and Commision as well as local authorities including City of Mutare who were represented by Town Clerk Joshua Maligwa. City of Harare and Zvishavane Town Council also appeared before the parliamentary committee, while Bulawayo City Council failed to appear despite receiving an invitation.

MDC Extremely Angered By SADC Secretariat Insincerity On Zimbabwe Situation

The opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led by Nelson Chamisa has slammed the Southern Africa Development Committee (SADC) for misleading the region on the obtaining situation in the country.

This follows a trip to Zimbabwe by the SADC Executive Secretary Dr Stergomena Tax who had a briefing with President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the current chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security.

After meeting Mnangagwa, Tax told the media the region was generally stable with challenges in some areas.

We publish the full statement by the MDC below:

SADC secretariat failing the region

The MDC notes with concern a statement issued following a meeting between Mr. Emmerson Mnangagwa and SADC executive secretary Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax.

We are not only concerned by how the statement affects SADC intervention on Zimbabwe but its overall assessment of the situation in the region. Our party always had reservations when Mnangagwa took over the reins of the Troika and the briefing he got from the Secretariat vindicates his mediocrity.

To reduce the crisis in SADC to youth unemployment is not only dishonest but contemptuous, cynical and disrespectful of citizens of SADC whose taxes fund the Secretariat. Public expectation is for the Secretariat to be professional in their advice of the leadership of the region.

There are issues of contested elections in the region, not only in respect of Zimbabwe but as evidenced recently in the DRC, Namibia, Botswana and Malawi. Sadly due to the legitimacy question, the crisis in Zimbabwe is worsening. The economy is in intensive care, with the second highest inflation in the world after Venezuela, collapsing foreign exchange, increasing budget deficit and ballooning domestic and sovereign debt. Wages have been eroded by both inflation and the exchange rate of the Zimbabwean dollar against other currencies. Pensions and Health insurance have been rendered useless while industrial capacity utilisation continues to collapse as companies are closing en masse.

There are shortages of electricity, drugs, roller meal, fuel and electricity. Over 8 million citizens are food insecure not only for 2020, an urgent assessment for 2021 is overdue.

The economic situation is just bleak with no solution is in sight. This situation has resulted in massive unemployment not only of young people but across the board and has resulted in millions crossing the border to South Africa and Botswana, among other countries. The spill-over effect is already impacting South Africa, its currency and probably contributes to the junk status. While we are internationalists who advocate for a customs union in Africa, we are cognisant of the fact that migration has to be managed.

Social service delivery has been abandoned, doctors were on strike for over 6 months. The Midlands State University has lecturers on strike, with other institutions of higher learning having had to defer lectures in some faculties and general tuition from primary Schools has gone beyond the reach of many. More importantly Zimbabweans are agitated, for they are suffering and being taxed to fund lifestyles of the political elite.

An implosion is looming. SADC must encourage dialogue and afford Zimbabwean a soft landing and also give Zimbabweans a break from the unpalatable suffering they have endured for decades.

RBZ Sets Ceiling For Amount Of Money In Circulation Strongly Refutes Claims That They Are Printing Money.

John Mangudya

THE Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) says it will maintain a tight monetary stance targeting reserve money growth not exceeding 15 percent by the end of the year.

The measure is meant to enhance exchange rate stability as well as tame inflationary pressures, which are often linked to growth in money supply.

In the 2020 Monetary Policy Statement presented last month, RBZ Governor Dr John Mangudya reiterated that the growth in money supply or more specifically reserve money last year, was as a result of subsidies on fuel, electricity, grain and Government expenditure.

“The bank remains committed to the implementation of the monetary targeting framework under its tight monetary stance and is targeting reserve money growth of 10-15 percent by the end of 2020,” said Dr Mangudya yesterday.

Reserve money refers to the currency in circulation plus commercial banks’ deposits with the central bank and other deposits to the same. As a result of the tight monetary policy stance and stability in the exchange rate, he said the month-on-month inflation for January 2020 declined to 2,23 percent from 16,56 percent in December 2019.

“And the forecast is that it will remain in the single digit levels for the rest of the year,” he said.

The apex bank recently indicated that the level of liquidity or money supply in the economy as measured by total banks’ deposit stood at ZW$34,5 billion as at December 31, 2019.

The figure is composed of ZW$22 billion (64 percent) in local currency and ZW$12,5 billion (US$785 million) or 36 percent in foreign currency.

Dr Mangudya noted that this liquidity was under key focus as the bank was mandated to manage it to ensure it does not cause inflation and/or bring volatility to the exchange rate.

Meanwhile, the RBZ boss has dismissed reports by some sections of the media insinuating that Zimbabwe is secretly printing money with a view to subsidise gold miners. Dr Mangudya said the concerned media reports, which were also circulating on social media were malicious and misleading.

“The article is circulated to tarnish the image of the bank and ultimately that of the country and its leadership, through misinforming the public.

“The bank notes with concern that the article seeks to fabricate an International Monetary Fund (IMF) executive board’s report on the Article IV Consultation for Zimbabwe, which development is quite unfortunate and disrespectful of the IMF as an institution and the Republic of Zimbabwe as a member of the IMF,” he said.

Dr Mangudya said it was also mischievous to allude to “secret money printing”, saying there was no secrecy in the payment of gold incentive scheme by the State through the financial institution.

He said in order to ensure the continued flow of gold through the formal channels and thus mitigating the leakages and side-marketing of gold, Government, through the bank provides incentives to the gold sector to increase foreign exchange through the interbank foreign exchange system.

“The gold incentive scheme, which is funded through the budget, has not been discontinued as alleged in the Article.

“The decline of the value of the local currency was largely due to various factors including low business and customer confidence, low production levels within the economy and the impact of macroeconomic shocks such as drought and Cyclone Idai,” said Dr Mangudya.

Govt Says Zimbabwe Has No Business Interfering With The U.S.

Nick Mangwana

THE Government has expressed dismay over the move by the United States on Wednesday to extend sanctions against Zimbabwe by one year and accusations that the country poses a threat to their foreign policy.

In a statement on Thursday, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Information Publicity and Broadcasting Services Mr Nick Mangwana also dismissed claims by the US that the army was committing extrajudicial killings and rape.

“The Government has noted with dismay the White House Message to the United States Congress, in which a decision was made to extend the sanctions against the Republic of Zimbabwe, for one more year,” said Mr Mangwana.

“Once again, the Government of the United States has chosen to strangely characterise Zimbabwe as a country that ‘poses an extraordinary threat to the foreign policy of the United States.’

“We find this a baffling position. All the Zimbabwean Government asks for, is to be allowed space to be a full member of the community of nations transacting without restrictions as other nations do.”

Mr Mangwana said Zimbabwe does not seek to interfere with the foreign policy or interests of any nation.

“Our commitment is to the development of our country and the delivery of socio-economic outcomes to our people. The Government of Zimbabwe strongly objects to the unfounded assertion that its security forces engaged in acts of extrajudicial killings and rape against its own citizens in the last year. Any acts of criminality by anyone are subjected to the criminal justice processes of the country,” he said.

“We have embarked on a pathway of reform because it is in the best interests of our Nation to do so, and it is also necessary to align our policies and programmes with our constitution. We therefore call upon those nations who wish our country and people well to partner us and be patient with us as we continue to undertake these reforms towards meeting the aspirations of our people.”

BAZ To Withdraw Clause That Asks Political Affiliation To Apply For Radio Licence

Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) is set to withdraw a clause in the law which requires an applicant of a radio or television licence to disclose political affiliation.

BAZ chairperson, Mr Charles Sibanda made the concession today when he appeared before the Parliamentary Portfolio committee on Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services chaired by Binga North Member of Parliament Mr Prince Dubeko Sibanda.

Mliswa Tears Into Incompetent Deputy Ministers

By A Correspondent| Independent legislator for Norton Temba Mliswa has questioned why the nation has a bloated government when deputy ministers fail to attend parliament and execute their mandate by contributing to parliamentary proceedings in the absence of their seniors.

Mliswa argued that incompetent deputy ministers should be sacked considering that the majority of them were “clueless”.

He said:

“…I rise on a point of order Mr. Speaker Sir. Mr. Speaker, you know that this institution is very important in understanding the role of Government.

As such, Section 107 is very clear on who should be here and the list that you have just called out has a number of Cabinet Ministers and not Deputy Ministers.

So my question is on what the role of Deputy Ministers is when Cabinet Ministers are not there. I thought that by being deputy, which is a clear meaning you are there to cover up for the Minister who is not there and you should be taking up questions.

We do not see Deputy Ministers here. I do not know where they are. They are paid by this Government and must understand what the Minister is doing so that when they come here they are able to inform.

There are many issues happening in this country which seek their attention but they are never here. Why do we have such a bloated Cabinet and Government?

They must just pack their bags and do absolutely nothing and when they speak they do not have information or what it takes to convince this House of anything that they are doing.”

Following his controversial victory against his closest contender MDC leader Nelson Chamisa, President Emmerson Mnangagwa on 7 September 2018, appointed a new 20 member cabinet.

The ministers were sworn into office on 11 September 2018 along with 13 deputy ministers and nine provincial  ministers.

However, the ministers and their deputies have been accused of bunking parliament and failing to present to the nation ministerial statements.

The development has seen Speaker of parliament Jacob Mudenda give the ministers an ultimatum to present to the august house 12 outstanding ministerial statements, some of which have been pending since last year.

Donald Trump Says Mnangagwa Has Just Been Another Mugabe – Full Statement

Two sides of the same coin. Emmerson Mnangagwa with Robert Mugabe

Section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)) provides for the automatic termination of a national emergency unless, within 90 days before the anniversary date of its declaration, the President publishes in the Federal Register and transmits to the Congress a notice stating that the emergency is to continue in effect beyond the anniversary date.

In accordance with this provision, I have sent to the Federal Register for publication the enclosed notice stating that the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13288 of March 6, 2003, with respect to the actions and policies of certain members of the Government of Zimbabwe and other persons to undermine Zimbabwe’s democratic processes or institutions is to continue in effect beyond March 6, 2020.

In the wake of the resignation of former President Robert Mugabe in November 2017, Zimbabwe’s national elections in July 2018, and President Mugabe’s subsequent death in September 2019, Zimbabwe has had ample opportunity to implement reforms that could set the country on a constructive path, stabilize the southern African region, and open the door to greater cooperation with the United States.

Unfortunately, President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration has yet to signal credible political will to implement such reforms. Indeed, the Zimbabwean government has arguably accelerated its persecution of critics and economic mismanagement in the past year, during which security forces have conducted extrajudicial killings, rapes, and alleged abductions of numerous dissidents.

These actions and policies by certain members of the Government of Zimbabwe and other persons to undermine Zimbabwe’s democratic processes or institutions continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the foreign policy of the United States.

Therefore, I have determined that it is necessary to continue the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13288 with respect to Zimbabwe.

Bread Price Skyrockets

The price of bread has gone up from $20 for a standard loaf to $25 in most shops as of Thursday morning.

The prices were reviewed up last week from $18 to $20 or $21, making the latest price increase the second within seven days.

National Bakers Association of Zimbabwe president, Dennis Wallah, attributed the increase to an increased production cost.

Wallah said that flour is not subsidised hence market forces were at play.

The increase can also be attributed to a recent increase in fuel prices since bread prices, like those of other commodities, usually go up in response to fuel prices.

Mapeza Speaks On Next Move After Leaving Chippa United

Farai Dziva|Norman Mapeza has spoken about his next move after leaving South African side Chippa United.

The Zimbabwean gaffer unceremoniously resigned as the head coach of the club on Monday, just a day after steering his side to a 1-0 victory over AmaZulu.

He was quickly linked with another job in the South African top-flight with Usuthu and also with the National First Division outfit Ajax Cape Town.

But in interview with H-Metro, Mapeza said he was not looking to join any club.

“People always speculate but it’s not true, I just want to rest,” he said.

“I don’t know for how long, but I want to rest. I don’t have a time frame.

“Before I came here (in South Africa), I was linked with Manica Diamonds, so people might say a lot but it’s just speculation that’s all.”

Meanwhile, Chippa have already replaced Mapeza with Rulani Mokwena who signed a four-month contract.

Sibusiso Moyo Issues Own Statement Condemning US Renewal Of Sanctions Against Zimbabwe

STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND INTERNATIONAL TRADE ON THE RENEWAL, BY THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, OF ITS SANCTIONS REGIME AGAINST ZIMBABWE

HARARE – 5 MARCH 2020

We have noted, with disappointment but without surprise, the renewal of US sanctions against Zimbabwe for a further 12-month period.

Of particular regret, and where we must register our deep concern is that the narrative accompanying the renewal order makes no reference to, nor does it acknowledge or recognise any of the notable progress made in implementation of the political, economic and legislative reform programme outlined by His Excellency the President when he assumed office in November 2017, and further reinforced following the harmonised elections of July 2018.

We disagree strongly with the assertion that our Government has not demonstrated the political will to effect major reform.

Evidence of that reform abounds, inter alia, in the form of the Transitional Stabilisation Programme, the repeal of POSA, the imminent repeal of AIPPA, the imminent licensing of Community Radio Stations and independent television stations, the raft of electoral law reforms already endorsed by Cabinet and now awaiting formal submission to the Parliamentary consultative process, the commitment to complete the alignment of all laws to the 2013 Constitution by the end of June 2020, the formal establishment of the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency (ZIDA), ongoing Ease of Doing Business reforms, the ongoing implementation of many of the Motlanthe Commission recommendations and, indeed, many others : all of it, ignored, most regrettably in the decision by the US Government to maintain its sanctions regime in place.

Notwithstanding this unfortunate stance, we will continue to seek meaningful re-engagement with the United States authorities on a mutual respect basis and we will, of course, continue to pursue the reform agenda we have set ourselves at a pace which is responsible, manageable and sustainable.

Honourable Lt General (Rtd) Dr Sibusiso Moyo, M.P. MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND INTERNATIONAL TRADE

Logarusic Drops Antipas From Warriors Technical Team

Farai Dziva| Croatian mentor Zdravko Logarusic has reportedly axed one of his assistants, Joey Antipas, from the Warriors set-up.

Loga was appointed as the new Warriors head last month, but he told Zifa that he was not comfortable working with Antipas.

Loga thought his deputy would undermine him since he also wanted the head coach position.

The Chicken Inn gaffer was the only local coach to apply for the job after being in charge on an interim basis six months before, but the association selected him as the first assistant in the set-up.

According to ZTN News, the Warriors coach has been granted his wish and will work with Lloyd Chitembwe and national U23 coach Tonderayi Ndiraya as his assistants. No additions will be made in his technical team.

Brazilian Soccer Icon Ronaldinho Arrested

Ronaldinho is under police custody in Paraguay after he allegedly used false documentation to enter the South American country.

The 2002 World Cup winner arrived in Paraguay earlier on Wednesday for a charity event, but ran into trouble with authorities after they discovered the doctored passports in his hotel room in Asunción.

The 39-year old was held-up along with his brother Roberto on Wednesday night.

“[The brothers] are not being detained, they are still under judicial investigation and they have to testify. Then it will be decided whether they will be arrested or not,”Paraguay’s interior minister Euclides Acevedo told ESPN Brasil late on Wednesday.

Acevedo says the two men are now cooperating with the investigation, but are not free to leave the country until they provide testimony in the form of a deposition, set for 8am Thursday morning local time.

Both insist they are innocent, arguing they were deceived by a local “businessman.-Soccer 24

Latest On Willard Katsande Injury

Kaizer Chiefs have issued a worrying update on Willard Katsande who was injured over the weekend.

The 34-year old could miss the majority of the remaining games after he tore the ligament in the inner part of his knee during the 1-0 victory over Orlando Pirates on Saturday. He was stretchered off in the 75th minute.

Katsande’s expected date of return is still unknown and an appointment with a specialist has been set.

Physiotherapist Dave Milner confirmed the news on the club’s official website.

“Katsande is currently in a brace. He had a scan and will see the specialist this week to determine the extent of the injury.”

Meanwhile, the development comes as a blow to title-chasing Kaizer Chiefs if the midfielder is sidelined for a long time.Soccer 24

Panic As SA Records First Coronavirus Case

Health Alert :Coronavirus Symptoms

Compiled by Zimbabwe Online Health Centre
