BONA MUGABE: Humiliated President South Korea’s Dodgy PK

AnalysisBy David Moyo| The humiliated and impeached South Korean President (Park Geun-hye), was classically the country’s Bona Mugabe, it has emerged. She was a President’s child whose father brutally ruled the nation ironically during the exact entire period duration of Zimbabwe’s Chimurenga Rhodesian Bush war 1963 to 1979.

Park, 65, who was kicked out of power Friday morning, is the daughter of former military strongman Park Chung-hee, who served as president from 1963 to 1979 and oversaw South Korea’s transformation into an economic powerhouse by supporting conglomerates such as Samsung and Hyundai.

She has long been considered a kind of princess figure in South Korea, and one with a traumatic past. While she was still in college, her mother was killed by a bullet meant for her father, shot by a North Korean sympathizer. Even today, Park wears an old-fashioned hairstyle reminiscent of her mother’s.

She effectively became South Korea’s first lady at the age of 22, and during this time became close to Choi Tae-min, the founder of a religious cult that incorporated elements of Christianity and Buddhism. He would “deliver messages” to Park from her dead mother, according to local reports. A U.S. Embassy cable noted that the local press described Choi as a “Korean Rasputin.”

Park also became close to Choi’s daughter, Choi Soon-sil, the confidante at the center of this scandal, and their friendship continued after both their fathers died.

Park’s father, still president, was killed in 1979 by his own spy chief and she disappeared from public view for almost two decades.  ALSO READ – LATEST: President Finally Impeached – South Korea Latest.

Ngozi Torment: Satanist Kills Woman, Has Sex With Corpse And Drinks Her Blood

A NYANGA family is in the eye of a ritual storm after one of its members allegedly murdered a local woman, became intimate with the corpse before cutting her body parts and handed them to a local businessman.

Johannes Samungure revealed the spine-chilling murder during an avenging spirit appeasement ceremony in Village Eight in Nyajezi Resettlement Scheme last Saturday. The family was appeasing the spirit of Eva Mandikwaza killed in the same area in 2004.

Apparently Johannes killed Mandikwaza together with Israel Makape after the latter was approached by a local businessman (name withheld) to kill a human being and get body parts to enhance his supermarket and grinding mill businesses.

The Weekender learnt that Makape colluded and committed the heinous crime because he had impregnated Eva and was trying to gag her from revealing the adulterous affair to villagers since he was married. Makape and Samungure cut Eva’s tongue, fingers, breasts, womb and brains before sucking her blood.

Samungure also became intimate with Eva’s corpse before they handed over the body parts to the businessman.

Mandikwaza’s unsettled spirit manifested through her aunt claiming that she wanted 11 beasts and a goat as well as $400. She also demanded $200 for groceries to appease her spirit.

The case which was earlier heard at Chief Saunyama’s court drew scores of villagers who gathered at Samungure’s homestead where popular traditional healer and exorcist, Shingirai Mukotsanjera conducted the session.

Samungure revealed to The Weekender, which was present during the appeasement session that he was intimate with Mandikwaza’s corpse as part of the ritual process so that she would not wreak havoc in his family.

“The businessman approached Makape to kill anyone in the village and surrender to him the person’s body parts and blood. Makape engaged my services and we pounced on Eva since she was carrying his baby. He wanted her dead because he could not keep the promise he had made earlier on that he would marry her despite him being married to another woman. We killed her and removed her tongue, some of her fingers, breasts, womb and brains. I became intimate with her when she was already dead as part of the rituals. Makape left for South Africa soon after the incident,” he said.

Samungure’s family revealed that they were suffering several misdemeanors and calamities because of the ritual killing.

“We decided to appease Eva’s spirit because of mysterious deaths and illnesses that were plaguing our clan. We have almost everything that the Mandikwaza family needs, including money and livestock and we believe that the problems will come to an end,” said one of the eldest family members.

Mandikwaza, speaking through her aunt said it was unfortunate that Samungure and Makape decided to kill her for rituals because she was carrying the latter’s pregnancy, which he was denying responsibility.

“Makape was married, but he impregnated me. We were deeply in love and he had promised to marry me. He showed me a stand where he said we would stay together after our marriage. I was two months pregnant when he decided to kill me. I remember it was on a Friday. As usual, we met and started talking. He grabbed me and tripped me to the ground. He said it was the end of my life. He was with Samungure who cut my throat before cutting my privates as well as fingers. Samungure went on to sleep with me even though I was dead.

“My spirit never rested till today where he is paying for his sins. I will go on to torment Makape’s family until he comes back from wherever he is,” her spirit said through her aunt.

Said village head, Mr Jeremiah Mukotsanjera: “We were all left shell-shocked when the incident happened back then. Yes, the businessman in question is still alive, but he is now dead broke. By then, he was so rich and powerful. Everyone respected him, not until when this issue came to light, thanks to the exorcist and traditional healer, Shingirai with the assistance of Chief Saunyama who have been doing a lot to make sure that such cases of ritual killings comes to light.”

Acting Chief Saunyama, said it was refreshing that the Samungure family had decided to appease Mandikwaza’s spirit.

“It was long overdue. Mandikwaza’s spirit was tormenting the Samungures. The case was heard at my court after the deceased’s family approached us over the issue. We engaged Mukotsanjera to lead the appeasement ceremony. There are numerous cases of that nature in my area, some of them were committed decades ago,” he said.

The Mandikwaza family confirmed that they buried Eva without some body parts. –  Manica Post

SHOCKER: Mugabe Splurges US$1 Million On Self In 7 Days

President Robert Mugabe last week splurged more than US$1 million when he chartered an ultra-luxurious Boeing 767-200 Extended Range aircraft to Singapore and Ghana at a time government is struggling to raise salaries for its civil servants as well as rescue flood victims, the Zimbabwe Independent can exclusively reveal.

Investigations revealed that Mugabe chartered the 767 Boeing Business Jet (BBJ), registration P4-CLA, flight number CXB767, from March 1 until March 6 and paid more than US$1 million. The aircraft is operated by Bahrain offices of the Swiss-based VIP charter service firm Comlux Aviation.

This comes amid reports that Mugabe’s globetrotting has seen him splurge US$36 million on foreign and domestic travel in the first 10 months of 2016, piling pressure on a cash-strapped government that is failing to buy painkillers for public hospitals.

Sources say the plane was chartered because the Air Zimbabwe (AirZim) plane he usually uses is grounded and needs comprehensive servicing before it can undertake long-haul flights.

Mugabe’s failure to use his usual AirZim aircraft has put his son-in-law Simba Chikore — who runs the national airline as chief operating officer — under the spotlight. AirZim, which at Independence in 1980 had 18 aircraft in its fleet, now operates only four planes: one Airbus A320, one Boeing 767, one 737 and a ramshackle Chinese-built MA60.

“Air Zimbabwe could not service Mugabe’s plane on time because the suppliers have not yet been paid,” a source said, adding: “The airline has no long-haul flights which Mugabe could have used.”

Transport minister Joram Gumbo told the Independent yesterday that his ministry had to hire the plane because the AirZim one was grounded.

“We were forced to hire from Bahrain because the one which is normally used by the President is still being serviced. As we are speaking the parts have just arrived and it will be up and running, but the president had to travel,” Gumbo said.

“We tried to look within the region; South Africa had its own problems as well as Angola. The president charters even from Air Zimbabwe. He is our number one customer so there is nothing unusual in that.”

Gumbo said the cost of hiring the Bahraini plane was not markedly different except that the aircraft came from a bit far, so naturally it was bound to be expensive.

Mugabe, 93, dashed to Singapore on March 1 where he routinely undergoes medical check-ups as frailty and deteriorating health associated with old age take their toll on the veteran leader. He often checks into the expensive Gleneagles Hospital in the Southeast Asian city-state at a time millions of Zimbabweans are receiving a raw deal from grossly underfunded public hospitals .

During his Ghana visit, Mugabe was seen trudging slowly towards the high table with signs of his advanced age becoming more apparent.

According to the Comlux website, the: “Boeing 767 BBJ is a product dedicated to heads of state, royal families and business leaders. It is a long-range wide-body aircraft, allowing the transport of 63 passengers over 14 hours of flight non-stop.

“Fitted with a head of state VVIP cabin fully refurbished end of 2013, the aircraft has always been maintained at the highest standards of the industry. The efficient cabin of the 767 BBJ allows the principal and his executives to travel in extreme comfort and privacy at the front, while a spacious section at the back is fully dedicated to his delegation and entourage,” the website says.

“In addition, Comlux offers a comprehensive set of services to VIP customers who wish to have their own aircraft managed personally and professionally. This includes aircraft management, sales and acquisitions, cabin design and completion and maintenance and engineering services.”

The plane, whose serial number and engine number are 32954 LN:861 and GE CF6-80C2B6F respectively, cruises at 860 kilometres per hour and has state-of-the-art facilities which include: “Private bedroom, bathroom, office and dining area for the entourage.”

“Seating capacity includes 10 VVIP, 20 business and 33 premium economy to give total capacity of 63 passengers. The plane also has state-of-the-art equipment onboard which includes humidifier, playstation, blue-ray and GSM/free wi-fi broadband.”

Investigations by the Independent showed that the hiring fee includes all flight charges and VIP first-class catering. However, special requests such as caviar, rare wines or spirits are invoiced additionally at cost.

Satellite phone charges, wi-fi charges, any additional war risk insurance premiums, de-icing of the aircraft, limousine cost and car escort to the aircraft are not included and are charged additionally at cost.

Aviation experts say the cost of operating a commercial aircraft can be broken down into two main categories: airborne cost and ground cost. The airborne costs are the actual costs of flying the aircraft; the ground costs are the cost of the airframe, engine maintenance, as well as airport and hangar expenses. Both are typically measured hourly and are broken down per mile.

“With limited data on the dual engine wide bodies, it appears that the Boeing 767 costs around US$9 138 per hour to operate,” said an aviation expert.

In the first six months of 2016, Mugabe clocked 200 000 kilometres in the air. He travelled to Singapore more than 10 times in 2016.

He also went to Kenya on August 26 to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development. Upon his return, Mugabe spent just a night before flying out to Swaziland on August 29. He returned at 7:44pm the following day and was in Zimbabwe for only five hours before flying out to Dubai where he has a luxury home.

He returned on September 3 and was in the country for nine days before jetting out again on September 12 to Zambia for President Edgar Lungu’s inauguration.

Mugabe spent a night in Harare before leaving around midnight on September 15 for the moribund Non-Aligned Movement talk shop in Venezuela.

Soon after that, he attended the United Nations General Assembly in the United States where he pleaded with the West for the relaxation of sanctions. Mugabe attended Lesotho’s 50th independence anniversary.

This year alone, Mugabe has already been to Singapore, Ethiopia, New York and Ghana. – Independent

Point Of Order Professor!

Tafara Shumba | Following the hyper-tweeting by the Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development minister Professor Jonathan Moyo, the ruling party’s first politburo sitting for 2016, resolved to ban its members from using social media to communicate party issues.

Speaking to journalists after that lengthy politburo meeting, Zanu PF spokesperson, Simon Khaya Moyo said: “If they (party leaders) don’t listen to these messages, appropriate action will be taken naturally. Anyway, we have structures to deal with that.” As matters stand Cde Khaya Moyo, there has been a gross defiance of this standing order with nobody receiving any reprimand from the structures that you referred to. Some very senior members of the party continue to attack fellow party members with impunity. Some youths, who seem to have learnt it from their party elders, have followed suit with some of them even slating President Robert Mugabe on social media platforms.

Even the President himself has not been impressed by the way some of his lieutenants have become prolific on twitter. During the 2016 annual conference in Masvingo, President Mugabe criticised those who take to the social media to attack fellow party members.

“We don’t address our grievances through such platforms as Twitter and Facebook. Some of us use them and the private newspapers to criticise other party leaders as well as trying to cleanse themselves, we don’t want that. These things are being done by very senior party members and not smaller ones,” said President Mugabe.

Even after the politburo’s resolution, some party’s cyber trolls, particularly Professor Moyo, did not cease to criticise fellow party members through twitter. Perhaps he continued on the basis of his consciousness of his constitutional right to freedom of expression. Of course those rights are enshrined in the constitution but their enjoyment in not absolute.  There is absolutely no problem if one enjoys his constitutional rights without trampling upon those of others.

Yours truly had no qualms about Professor Moyo’s proclivity for tweeting until recently when he tweeted something undisputedly out of order.  “Report by @HeraldZimbabwe that “Command Agric exceeds target” is at best premature and at worst needlessly false,” tweeted Professor Moyo last Monday. The tweet received endorsement from strange people, who should have been sufficed to raise Professor Moyo’s suspicion. In most cases, something is always wrong somewhere when you utter a statement or do something that subsequently receives glorification from your adversary. That alone must make one stop and take a conscious mental and purposive process of examining his or her thoughts and perceptions. It’s either he is shooting himself in the foot or he has gone totally haywire.

Professor Moyo received a standing ovation, on twittter of course, for taking a pot-shot at a successful government programme. Professor Moyo would do well if he drew a line between factional interests and state interests. The fact that the programme is being spearheaded by someone he might not like or who might not be politically compatible with his own political interests does not justify his condemnation. Command Agriculture programme is a government project that was sanctioned by the President and nobody in government can or should claim exclusive credit for its success, neither should there be an individual to carry the blame for its failure. That programme is a cabinet product in which the learned professor is privileged to be a member.

Food security and nutrition is one of the key clusters in the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (Zim-Asset), a blue print that Professor Moyo himself immensely contributed in its crafting. As the farming season is coming to an end, one does not need to be clever or to be a rocket scientist, to borrow Professor Moyo’s favourite American idiom, to see that the nation is set to receive a bumper harvest. Those who put forward this argument are basing it from assessments they do on farms. After all, agriculture is not done on twitter. Yours truly is a farmer and can unflinchingly reiterate that the Command Agriculture target will be surpassed.

The food and nutrition cluster will be one of the success stories that Zanu PF government will showcase to the people who gave them mandate to rule. President Mugabe is on record telling Zimbabweans that nobody will die of hunger despite last year’s drought. True to his word, the government supported the command agriculture programme which is set to pay dividend soonest. It then surprises even the devil, to hear one senior government official condemning it.

The successes of Zim-Asset will be a campaign trump card that Zanu PF will play in the forthcoming election. Obviously, the opposition is not amused by its success and that is the reason why they are generously showering praises to Professor Moyo for his strange statement. The professor must self-introspect in order to gain insight, lest he scores an own goal. It raises suspicions when supporters of a rival team roars in cheer whenever one of your players gets the ball. The cheer will even become more deafening if that player scores an own goal.

The Professor is singing from an opposition’s hymn book. One of the areas that the opposition is currently harping on for political expediency is the Gukurahundi issue. They believe they can win back the Matebeleland vote which they miserably lost in 2013 polls. Unfortunately, the learned Professor is in the front position of putting the Gukurahundi issue on the agenda of political discourse. He has applied for permission to exhume and rebury the remains of his late father whom he said was killed during the disturbances. He wants to do this just less than 18 months before the 2018 elections. With all due respect and this must not be misconstrued as factional, the Professor must ask himself whose interests is he serving.

Tsvangirai MDC Caught In Nasty Factional Wars

Terrence Mawawa, Masvingo | In ugly scenes of intra-party violence in the MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai a councillor was severely assaulted by angry youths last week.

This followed a heated argument during a provincial meeting as rival camps in the party clashed over the selection of candidates in Masvingo Urban Constituency. Ward four councillor Godfrey Kurauone was beaten up by Masvingo Urban district youth chairperson, Peacemaker Mapope and a group of party youths after he spoke against Takanayi Mureyi an aspiring candidate for the constituency.

Kurauone was assaulted in front of provincial youth chairperson, Philip Chingini who never made an effort to restrain the marauding members. Kurauone took to his heels after the rowdy youths had mobbed him.

Kurauone said he was assaulted and added the party was looking into the matter. “Yes I was assaulted and I am sure the party will deal with the issue via the proper channel,” said Kurauone.
In Masvingo Urban Constituency three aspiring MDC candidates are battling it out for the sole berth to represent the party in the tussle for the parliamentary seat. The three are Mureyi,Boniface Mazarire and Tongai Matutu. Chingini claimed there was a freak altercation between the two party officials.

“Kurauone was not assaulted but there was a minor misunderstanding between the two,” said Chingini. Sources said efforts by party leader, Morgan Tsvangirai to quash factionalism did not materialise last month.

Mawarire Runs For President Online

COLOGNE/WINDHOEK– Pastor Evan Mawarire, the founder of #This Flag movement, is reportedly going to launch a run for the country’s 2018 presidency very soon, using a combative combination of social media campaign platforms, Spotlight Zimbabwe, has been told.
Mawarire who was last year hounded out of the country for U.S exile by President Robert Mugabe, for allegedly attempting to topple a constitutionally elected government, and has since returned home, is said to be preparing to run for the highest office in the land, as an Independent candidate to challenge Zanu PF’s decades long misrule.

The clergyman according to civil society leaders in the capital and media contacts in Namibia, is going to make “a surprise online” launch of his presidential bid, where his manifesto will be revealed. It is thought that, although Mawarire does not have a solid grass-root political party, the magic and power of social media and the internet, could garner significant votes for him, which might see him becoming a political kingmaker, in the next government, likely to be led by former prime minister, Morgan Tsvangirai, and ex-VP Joice Mujuru, via a coalition administration expected to include key opposition leaders.

Zimbabwe’s presidential and parliamentary elections slated for July 2018, are arguably the most contested poll in the history of the country, as a record number of candidates, including Independents are expected to contest.

Former VP Mujuru set the ball rolling this week in Britain, where she told a London School of Economics (LSE) gathering, comprising of mostly female students, that she is going to challenge Mugabe next year, killing hopes and speculation that she might run on a joint ticket with MDC-T leader, Tsvangirai.

“Mawarire is not back in Zimbabwe for fun,” said a civic leader whose organisation is leading efforts for youth registration and participation in the 2018 plebiscite. “He was clear and sound in the U.S but he cannot be throwing himself into a lion’s den for no apparent reason. We have gathered in our circles that, he was granted massive funding abroad to run for president. A team of internet technicians from one of the popular social media companies is involved in the whole scheme to support his countrywide virtual campaign online.”

Sometime in September 2016, the pastor visited Twitter headquarters in San Francisco, to give a presentation about the situation in Zimbabwe.

“Twitter is going to play a pivotal role on the global scene to spruse up his (Mawarire) image,” said a Namibian media practitioner last week claiming to have knowledge of Mawarire’s upcoming social media campaign. “Facebook which is the most popular platform in your country is also going to be crucial, alongside Youtube where he first appeared to launch #This Flag.”

Facebook is the leading social media platform in Zimbabwe with the usage of about 97.34%. Twitter ranks second with 1.78%, Pinterest ranks third with 0.56%, Tumblr ranks fourth with 0.2% and the remaining social networks holds 0.12% using Mobile internet.

Mawarire’s looming online presidential campaign is reminiscent of former U.S President, Barack Obama’s 2008 election run for the White House. Obama’s campaign became the first political campaign in history to truly harness the power of social media to spread the word, garner support and get people engaged, according to specialised social media website DragonFly.

“The Obama campaign reached 5 million supporters on 15 different social Networks over the course of campaign season; by November 2008, Obama had approximately 2.5 million (some sources say as many as 3.2 million) Facebook supporters, 115,000 Twitter followers, and 50 million viewers of his YouTube channel,” the website said about Obama.

Obama has been called the “first social-media president”, and his White House was indeed the first presidency to make use of services like Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram.

Mawarire is likely going to face Tsvangirai, Mujuru and VP Emmerson Mnangagwa in the watershed 2018 poll. Mugabe as we have previously reported is out of the equation. Zanu PF wants him to contest at 94, as the ruling party candidate. If Mugabe had contested the election and won, he would not be able to seek another term, and should he have resigned or died during his final term, a successor could be appointed without an election.

Pastor Mugadza Freed | LATEST

Ray Nkosi | Pastor Phillip Mugadza is at last a free man.

“In Harare, ZLHR lawyer Obey Shava has ended the lengthy detention of Zimbabwean clergyman Pastor Phillip Mugadza after securing his release on bail at the High Court,” wrote the Lawyers For Human Rights.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers, who arrested the clergyman claimed that the Remnant Pentecostal Church leader on Friday 13 January 2017 unlawfully acted in a manner which is likely to create a nuisance by giving a prophesy that President Mugabe is going to die on 17 October 2017.

The law enforcement agents charged that Pastor Mugadza contravened Section 46 (2) (v) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23, when he allegedly misrepresented to members of the public that the prophesy was a true prophesy.

However, Pastor Mugadza denied the charge.

Bhasikiti Fails To Pay $133 663 Electricity Bill

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has dragged former Masvingo Provincial Affairs minister Kudakwashe Bhasikiti to court demanding $133 663 for electricity supplied to his ranch in Rutenga.

The former legislator reportedly owns Moria Ranch in Mwenezi.

In its declaration through its lawyers, Chihambakwe, Mutizwa and Partners, the power utility said despite several demands, Bhasikiti had refused to fulfil his contractual obligation.

“The defendant (Bhasikiti) is indebted/liable to the plaintiff (ZETDC) as at February 20, 2016 in the sum of $133 663,73, being charges in respect of power/electricity supplied by the plaintiff to the defendant at the latter’s special request and instance in terms of the running electricity supply contract between the two,” ZETDC said.

“Which amount is arrived at as shown in the table below: Moria Ranch first point $48 857,01 and Moria Ranch second point $84 806, 72. The defendant has failed, neglected and/or refused to pay the above amount/sum despite written demand.

“By reason of the said failure, neglect or refusal to pay the above sum/amount, the defendant is obliged to pay the same with interest at the prescribed rate, which is currently 5% per annum.”

Through his lawyers, Chuma, Gurajena and Partners, Bhasikiti entered an appearance to defend himself on March 7 this year after receiving summons on the March 3.

Mugabe ‘Death’ Prophet Judgement Set For Today

The Prosecutor-General (PG)’s Office has urged the High Court to deny Kariba-based Remnant Church Pastor Patrick Philip Mugadza bail on the basis that the cleric had a propensity to commit similar offences while on bail.

Mugadza is accused of committing a criminal offence by “prophesying” that President Robert Mugabe would die on October 17 this year.

The cleric yesterday appeared before High Court judge Justice Priscilla Chigumba appealing against the magistrates’ court decision to deny him provisional liberty pending his trial, which has now been set for March 30 this year.

Judgment on the appeal is set to be delivered today.

Through his lawyer, Obey Shava from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, Mugadza argued he was a proper candidate for bail given that the State’s fears in denying him liberty were based on the wrong interpretation of the law.

In his submission, Shava said the State did not deny that the offence for which his client was previously convicted of was,in fact, a first schedule offence.

“The State does not deny that the offence the appellant is facing is not the one described in the first schedule offence,” Shava said before being interrupted by the court, which said it had already read his papers.

In response to Mugadza’s application, prosecutor Editor Mavuto said the magistrates’ court did not err when it denied the cleric bail on the basis that he had a propensity to commit further offences.

“Respondent (State) is of the view that the court a quo (which heard the matter) judiciously exercised its discretion in denying the appellant bail pending trial. His finding that appellant (Mugadza) had the propensity to commit further offences was substantiated by the evidence led by the State to the effect that he had another pending case similar to the present offence,” Mavuto said.

According to the court papers, on January 12 this year, Mugadza was interviewed by the Zimbabwe Mail, an online publication, and the State alleges he caused to be published a story captioned, Pastor Mugadza says President Mugabe to die in October 2017, which appeared on the same publication on January 13 this year.

The State alleges in the interview Mugadza committed an offence and insulted the Christian religion and African tradition by uttering words which are taboo by predicting someone’s death. – Newsday

Parent Assaults Teacher For Failing To Attend Lessons

Terrence Mawawa, Mwenezi| An irate parent assaulted a teacher for failing to attend lessons, it has emerged.

The incident happened on Monday at Masogwe Primary School. Police are investigating the matter. The teacher, Turner Muhangu was allegedly assaulted by a parent, identified only as Chauke. He accused Muhangu of conducting personal business during working hours.

The incident happened in the deputy head, Misheck Hlongwane’s office. However, villagers here claimed Muhangu was assaulted for publicly insulting President Robert Mugabe. The melee brought the whole school to a virtual standstill as Chauke chased a fleeing Muhangu.
He followed Muhangu to the deputy head’s office and assaulted him.

“Chauke accused Muhangu of neglecting his duties. He chased Muhangu all the way to the deputy head’s office where he assaulted him. However, Muhangu managed to overpower Chauke with the help of other staff members,” said a source at the school. The school head, Emmaculate Chuma confirmed there was a scuffle between Chauke and Muhangu. “We have since reported the matter to the police and as we speak, there are ZRP officers working on the issue,” said Chuma.

Mwenezi District Schools Inspector, Lackson Zanamwe said he was unaware of the issue. “We are yet to receive such a report,” said Zanamwe.

Tsvangirai Goes After Grace Mugabe

MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai yesterday called on First Lady Grace Mugabe to be punished for using goods confiscated by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) to allegedly buy votes ahead of next year’s crunch general elections, where President Robert Mugabe (93) is expected to face a united opposition.

Speaking at a Press briefing soon after chairing the first MDC-T national executive committee meeting after month-long countrywide consultations with opinion leaders, Tsvangirai also claimed that Zanu PF had put in motion plans to rig elections using Israeli firm, Nikuv International Projects.

“Vote-buying by any means should be made a serious, punishable offence. We have seen key government actors associated with Zanu PF overtly buying votes with rice and Zimra-confiscated items, among other vote-buying gimmicks,” Tsvangirai said in apparent reference to Grace.

This came as Zanu PF has reportedly been dishing out government-sourced food hampers, agricultural inputs and stands to supporters at its rallies throughout the country.

During the recent parliamentary by-elections in Norton, Chimanimani and Bikita West, the party also distributed food hampers, groceries and unserviced land as residential stands to sway the votes in favour of its candidates.

At a recent rally in Buhera, Grace admitted that the goods she distributed during her whirlwind tours were confiscated by Zimra from smugglers and importers who failed to pay customs duty.

She claimed that her enemies in Zanu PF were writing letters so that she would not receive material support for her rallies.

“Letters have been written so that I will not be given anything to come and give you. I am the First Lady and can I go to the people empty-handed? I don’t think that is proper and I will not do that,” she said.

But Tsvangirai said such vote-buying actions by Grace and Zanu PF functionaries were abuse of State resources.

“We saw these antics in Norton and Bikita West, as well as in Buhera where Zimra goods were donated at the same time when the nation was being threatened with a corpse as a Presidential candidate. Apart from being a punishable offence, vote-buying should be a basis for disqualification, even before the election is held,” he said.

The MDC-T leader, who will be contesting against Mugabe for the fourth time since 2000, reiterated his calls for the compilation of a fresh and credible voters’ roll ahead of the 2018 polls.

“A credible voters’ roll is mandatory and if there is continued dithering and subversion of the biometric voter registration (BVR) process, then we can ensure that prospective voters simply produce their IDs, as happened in the election of 1980,” Tsvangirai opined.

The main opposition leader said the government’s aim was to subvert the procurement of BVR kits because it wanted Nikuv to get registered under surrogate names to enable it to win the tender to supply the kits.

Opposition parties accuse Nikuv of rigging elections in behalf of Zanu PF.

“If Zimbabwe proceeds to use the BVR system, which Zanu PF is not keen to do, we are also aware of plans to have Nikuv International Projects work with some named Indian companies in hacking or engaging in cyber-attacks on the whole electoral system once it becomes clear that the results are not going in Zanu PF’s favour,” Tsvangirai claimed.

He called on the opposition to unite and demonstrate against “this theft” of elections later this month.

“Whether in the courts or in the streets, we shall fight all attempts to steal the next election and we fully endorse the resolution that we took with others under the banner of Nera (National Electoral Reform Agenda) to mobilise Zimbabweans for a public protest on March 22,” Tsvangirai urged his supporters. – Newsday

ZBC SHOCK VIDEO: White People Caught On Camera At Mapositori Church Meetings

Hard times hit the country – White people in Zimbabwe have culturally regarded the Mapositori church services as demonic meetings especially ever since the days of the witch-doctor Nehanda Nyakasikana (DOD 1897) who wielded psycho-spiritual power over people in near-similar fashion to the present day Mapositori church leaders. But several white Zimbabweans, male and female have been caught dressed in Madzibaba garb. Below was a video by the state broadcaster, ZBC:

MUGABE REMOVAL: President Panics as Mutsvangwa Bulldozes

Mugabe easy to remove…Christopher Mutsvangwa

President Robert Mugabe is panicking over a grand meeting of war veterans slated for Harare. The furious liberation fighters have already told Mugabe to step down with immediate effect or else.

The first meeting held last year July, saw Mugabe being ordered out of State House with immediate effect and hand over to his vice Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The latest development has seen the Mugabe controlled police force frustrate a war veterans meeting scheduled for Harare this week amid a desperate attempt by Mugabe agents to create a counter meeting of war collaborators in order to diffuse resolutions to be made at war vets leader Chris Mutsvangwa’s meeting.

The collaborators working under Mugabe agent, Brigadier-General Walter Tapfumaneyi said a meeting for the war veterans and Mugabe had been set for the first two weeks of April.

“The ministry, therefore, urges all veterans of the liberation struggle not to attend any other meeting that may be convened without its authority purporting either to be preparing for the President’s April meeting or falsely claiming that the President is its host and keynote speaker,” said Brig Gen Tapfumaneyi.

“In the interim, the ministry wishes to reassure all war veterans that the President, the ruling party Zanu-PF and the Cabinet are actively seized with all their concerns as captured comprehensively in the resolutions of their epic meeting with the President on April 7, 2016.

“Veterans of the liberation struggle must, accordingly, take heed of and embrace this constructive and responsible approach to addressing their concerns.

“This meeting, along the precedent set in the inaugural meeting held on April 7, 2016, will review the implementation of the resolutions of the first meeting and discuss further all outstanding issues relevant to the welfare, economic empowerment and socio-political situation of war veterans.”

Tapfumaneyi said it was the sole responsibility of the ministry to organise such high level meetings.

Mr Mutsvangwa has however rubbished state media reports saying he never called a meeting in the name of Robert Mugabe.

“We are an autonomous association and we hold our meetings according to the Constitution of Zimbabwe as adopted in 2013. It is not the case that we have invited President Mugabe to our meeting but what we have done is to invite all war veterans across the country regardless of their station. (Brig Gen) Tapfumaneyi is trying to use powers of a civil servant to become an alternative centre of power,” Mutsvangwa said yesterday.

Mutsvangwa added saying they had rescheduled their meeting to iron out administrative and technical issues raised by the police.

He revealed that the police were under pressure from Brig Gen Tapfumaneyi not to clear their meeting.

Sandra Ndebele: The Night I Cried

When Sandra Ndebele launches her new single “Ingoma” at City Sports Bar tonight, she takes another step of a music journey that has had mixed fortunes.

“Ingoma” is a duet with Mzoe 7 and the two are on a campaign to market the new release that will be on Sandra’s upcoming album.

She said their City Sports Bar show is their first event in Harare to announce the project after a successful Bulawayo campaign. Sandra takes the campaign as a bright light in her music career that has had its highs and lows.

Going down memory lane, the musician recalled how she became one of the few lucky musicians to hog the limelight in the early days of their art.

With only one album to her name in the early 2000s, she shook the showbiz scene and became a centre of attraction.

She also got a good share of criticism as people felt her dances were obscene while her dressing was said to be too revealing for public appearances. But Sandy braved the waves and pushed her art through. Male fans would flock to her shows to see her in action, obviously lured by her seductive style.

She got contracts to share the stage with big musicians of the time and toured many parts of the country gracing big shows. The early fame was exciting, but it also had its challenges. One of her worst moments came when she had a show in Chinhoyi with Alick Macheso.

“It was in 2004 and promoters were jostling for my signature yet I only had a few songs to my name. Actually I only had two hits ‘Malaika’ and ‘Mama Mama’ from the album ‘Chaya Chaya’. The songs were really doing well, but I could not sustain a long slot on stage,” she recalled.

“It was ok when I just had short performances, but the show in Chinhoyi was a different case. I went on stage ahead of Macheso and had to perform for some hours before he came. I played all my songs and started repeating the hits because I had exhausted my playlist.

“People got impatient and started waving me off the stage. That was the time when fans would regularly break into that popular tune ‘Macheso, Macheso mai mwana’ whenever they wanted him to come on stage.

“That night I had a nightmare on stage when people began singing the chorus to chase me off the stage. I felt so ashamed and could not continue. I got off the stage and began crying. Macheso saw me weeping back stage and he comforted me.

“He told me to be strong and advised me to start practicing cover versions of other musicians’ songs to prolong my performances. That night his words only made me cry harder because I saw it as a sign of failure. I wanted to pull out of our next show in Kariba.

“That night I cried in my blankets. It was only the following morning when Macheso’s words of comfort began to make sense. I resolved to continue with the tour. In Kariba he shielded me by coming early on stage.

“I gained confidence and the following week we started rehearsing for cover version performances. Things began to change and I also got experience with time until I could do shows on my own. More albums also meant more songs to perform and I have been enjoying the journey since then.”

Sandra says the music industry taught her to be strong because she was implicated in numerous controversial stories.

“I was accused of many things and I had to develop a thick skin, because some of the claims were damaging.
“When things began working well for me in the industry, I went on my first holiday in South Africa and spent some time there. My absence raised suspicions and upon return I was confronted with reports claiming I had gone to SA for abortion.

“The other time some reports claimed that I was HIV positive when I had shed a bit of weight. I was also linked to many prominent men as people claimed I was in love with them. I accepted these situations as the challenges that come with my type of art and I moved on.”

Sandra’s arrival on the scene was emphatic to the extent of being nominated in the same category with Alick Macheso and Oliver Mtukudzi for the Best Live Act award at Zimbabwe Music Awards.

In 2003, she won the Best Female Artiste award at National Arts Merit Awards and, since the beginning of Harare International Carnival, she has scooped the Best Carnival Act award at all her appearances.

She became a prominent feature at national music galas where she stole the limelight on numerous occasions.

Because of her resilience, she got many endorsement deals and is currently ambassador for Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, National Blood Service Zimbabwe, Mpilo Hospital and Suzuki.

Sandra has toured various countries that include Russia, Germany, Canada, Japan, China and United Kingdom among others.

The artiste values her traditional roots and besides her band, she also leads an all-female group Intombi Zomqangala that seeks to promote local culture abroad.

She said her collaboration with Mzoe 7 is one of the projects she has lined up with a number of artistes this year. She has been travelling between Harare and Bulawayo every week to map the way ahead of her new album that is expected in October.

Sandra said the busy schedule between family, business and music often keep her away from the studio and this year she is working hard to have a new release.

She also has to spare time for her studies as she recently enrolled for a Marketing and Public Relations programme with a local college.-state media

BREAKING NEWS – President Finally Impeached – South Korea Latest

Staff Reporter | History was early this morning broken as South Korean Supreme Court judges upheld President Park Geun-hye’s impeachment, removing her from office.

The President has been permanently kicked out of work.

Ms Park has been accused of colluding with a friend who allegedly pressured big companies to give money in return for government favours.

Ms Park and her friend, Choi Soon-sil, both deny doing anything wrong.

South Korea’s constitutional court delivered its verdict after a final session lasting over an hour at around midnight (London time).

The decision was unanimous reached by a total of 8 judges. “There is no other choice but to decide the verdict,” of impeachment of Park, said Lee Jung-mi, the acting chief justice.

A presidential election must now be held within the next 60 days.

The case has disturbed the entire South Korean society because of the sheer extent of the alleged corruption: not only is the presidential Blue House implicated, but the chiefs of leading companies like Samsung, a high-profile prosecutor and the head of the national pension fund, the world’s third largest. There have also been accusations of favorable university admissions and extravagant bribes — including a million-dollar horse — which have angered ordinary people who feel like the system is stacked against them.

The case comes at a time of high tensions in the region, with North Korea firing missiles and threats, and an angry China retaliating against South Korea as punishment for deploying the American anti-missile battery THAAD to guard against the North. Beijing sees it as a way to keep it in check and has been trying to hurt the South economically to make Seoul reconsider.

The Constitutional Court voted to uphold the impeachment motion against Park, passed by an overwhelming majority in the National Assembly in December, said Lee Jung-mi, the acting chief justice.

“It was a such an obvious case that there was no room for the court to rule other than impeaching the president,” said Kim Seon-taek, a professor of constitutional law at Korea University.

“Through the ‘Choi-gate’ investigation, we found serious violations of laws and evidence of meddling with law and order of the nation by both Choi Soon-sil and Park Geun-hye,” Kim said.

The political scandal — extraordinary even by the standards of South Korea’s tumultuous democracy — revolves around Park and her lifelong friend, Choi Soon-sil, who held no official position but turned out to wield huge influence over the president, much more than her official advisers and ministers.

“The president violated the Constitution and South Korean law by letting Choi Soon-sil get involved in government affairs,” chief justice Lee said Friday. “This is a violation of constitutional democracy.”

The court concluded that the president had personally asked big business for donations and had leaked confidential documents to Choi, and that she had tried to cover up her wrongdoing.

Choi is accused of extracting bribes from big business — Samsung alone is accused of planning to give her $37 million — in return for using her relationship with the president to ensure favorable treatment for the companies.

Special prosecutors tasked with investigating the case, known here as “Choi-gate,” said in a damning 101-page report released this week that they had found evidence that the president colluded with Choi. Park refused to be questioned by the special prosecutors.

Prosecutors have recommended a total of 13 charges against Park including abuse of power, coercion of donations and the sharing of state secrets. Park had immunity from prosecution while she was in office, but has lost that now that she has been removed from the presidency.

The release of the prosecutors’ report coincided with the conclusion of the Constitutional Court’s 10-week-long deliberation on the impeachment case. Park declined to appear before the court, although she issued statements through her lawyers in which she had steadfastly denied any wrongdoing.

The court had six months to consider the case but imposed a deadline of Monday on itself.

The chief justice retired as scheduled in January and the acting chief justice is set to finish her term on March 13, taking the number of judges on the bench down to seven. A majority of six judges is required for a ruling.

“The case couldn’t have been any clearer,” said Chung Tae-ho of Kyung Hee University. “With this verdict, the Constitutional Court has sent an unequivocal warning to the people in power not to take advantage of their positions and seek personal gains.”

Park was suspended from office in December after weeks of enormous protests, with hundreds of thousands of people packing the streets of Seoul every Saturday calling on her to resign or be impeached.

The outrage against her was triggered by revelations that the president, who seldom consulted with her ministers and official advisers, had been taking secret counsel on everything from North Korea policy to her wardrobe choices from a friend who held no official position.

Making matters worse, it turned out that the friend, Choi, the daughter of a shaman cult leader, had appeared to take advantage of her relationship with the president to enrich herself and win favors for her family.

She is accused of receiving about $70 million in bribes from big business groups like Samsung.

Samsung’s de facto head, Lee Jae-yong, went on trial Thursday on a range of charges including bribery, embezzlement and perjury over the case, and Choi has been on trial for months.

Both strongly deny any wrongdoing, although at a parliamentary hearing in December, Lee admitted that Samsung had given a $900,000 horse to Choi’s daughter, an Olympic equestrian hopeful.

Park had called the allegations “preposterous, colossal” lies and said they were part of a plot to bring her down.

“If I go through the allegations, I can’t help but think that this whole situation was premeditated, to be frank with you,” she said during an interview with the chief editorial writer for the Korea Economic Daily, a columnist who has defended Park throughout the scandal, in January.

Park’s impeachment marks the first time a sitting president has been ejected from office in South Korea.

Roh Moo-hyun, a liberal, was impeached by the National Assembly in 2004 for minor election-law breaches — he had expressed his hope that his party would win at the upcoming general election, considered violation of the law as the president is supposed to be politically neutral.

After deliberating for two months, the Constitutional Court overturned the motion. While it found that Roh had indeed breached the law, it ruled that the charges were not serious enough to warrant his removal.

The conservative faction is in disarray, with the ruling party splitting into those who supported the president and those wanting to distance themselves from her following her suspension.

The latest polls put Moon, a progressive from the Democratic Party who ran against Park in the last presidential election, in the lead, although he is facing a surprise primary challenge from An Hee-jung.

Moon has taken a much more conciliatory approach toward North Korea than the conservative governments that have held power since 2008, and his election would likely see the resumption of a “sunshine policy” of engagement with the North.

Park, 65, is the daughter of former military strongman Park Chung-hee, who served as president from 1963 to 1979 and oversaw South Korea’s transformation into an economic powerhouse by supporting conglomerates such as Samsung and Hyundai.

– BBC/WP/Agencies

SUDDEN DEATH: Man Drinks Down Deadly Cyanide

A MAN from Old Pumula suburb in Bulawayo died instantly after allegedly drinking cyanide in a suspected suicide.

Edrich Moyo (26) is said to have taken his life in company of his wife on Monday.

It is not clear why Moyo, an employee at Amazon Mine in Filabusi, decided to end his life.

Yesterday, The Chronicle visited the Old Pumula house where Moyo was a tenant and a woman said Moyo’s family had taken his body for burial in Nkayi.

“This occurred on Monday in the afternoon. It seems he drank cyanide because he died seconds after downing the chemical. He entered a bathroom where he drank the poison and came out groaning. He told his wife that he was dying before collapsing,” said the woman.

“A cup with the poison was found in the bathroom and initially people thought it was rat poison but it was later discovered that he drank cyanide.”

She said Moyo’s wife called a prophet to come pray for him, not realising that he was dead. “It seems he had a condition, but I’m not sure what it was.

There was a prophet who used pray for him, so when he collapsed his wife called the prophet. The man came and prayed in vain,” the woman said.

She said police attended the scene and pronounced Moyo dead.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango confirmed the sudden death.

“We are concerned over the loss of lives due to suicide. Members of the public should seek help from third parties whenever they encounter problems,” said Insp Simango.

On Monday, police retrieved the decomposed body of Ngqwele Sibanda (28) from his home in Nkulumane.

He had allegedly committed suicide the previous week following an argument with his girlfriend over a whatsApp profile picture.

“No Zimbabwean Will Starve This Year,” Says Mnangagwa

Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa has boasted saying no one in the country will starve.

Mnangagwa says this is because the country has enough grain.

The Mugabe led government has suspended grain imports saying the country has enough strategic grain reserves with more deliveries from the anticipated bumper harvest.

Increased yields are set to stimulate economic growth and help the country save scarce foreign exchange that has been drained from the economy through maize imports during drought periods in the last cropping seasons, the state media says.

The report continues saying Mnangagwa, who toured ARDA Antelope Estate in Maphisa and Ingwizi Estate in Mangwe, said the Government was impressed with the state of the maize crop across the country.

He told a delegation of Cabinet Ministers — Dr Joseph Made (Agriculture), Kembo Mohadi (State Security), Abedinico Ncube (Culture), ARDA board Chair Basil Nyabadza and senior Government officials — that the Command Agriculture scheme, a specialised Government initiative to increase agricultural production in the country, had so far performed beyond expectation and ruled out the possibility of food shortages this year.

“We have been using our money to import grain and that must stop. In the last three to four weeks we stopped importing grain as a country,” said the Vice President.

The Government together with the private sector has harnessed about $500 million to finance the Command Agriculture scheme, which targets to produce about two million tonnes of maize from 400 000 hectares this season.

VP Mnangagwa, who leads a Cabinet Committee on Food Security, said an overwhelming number of farmers voluntarily subscribed to the programme and received the necessary support to produce targeted yields.

He said indications were that a majority of farmers under the programme would exceed the minimum five tonnes yield per hectare with some expecting harvests of between 8 to 14 tonnes per hectare.

“In our view the cost of the support won’t exceed five tonnes and this means the remainder is profit to the farmer. We have said in four seasons we want to say goodbye to hunger but this target can be done in two seasons,” said VP Mnangagwa.

“This is the model to defeat hunger in Zimbabwe. The President (Mugabe) has tasked me to ensure the country produces enough food for Zimbabwe whether there is drought or not. What we need is commitment from all our people at different levels.”

Those involved in the Command Scheme are given support in the form of seed, fuel, chemicals, fertiliser and farming equipment with each hectare planted expected to produce five tonnes.

VP Mnangagwa said prospects of exceeding the two million tonnes target were certain given that more farmers who received support under the Presidential Inputs Scheme were also having a promising crop.

The country has over six months’ supply of maize, at about 250 000 tonnes at a drawdown rate of 41 189 tonnes per month held under the Strategic Grain Reserve, according to Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Minister Dr Made. This excludes grain reserves held by the private sector.

The minister last week reported that the area of all major crops planted this season has doubled due to the good rains and the support given to farmers under Command Agriculture. As of January 27, the total area of maize planted was 1 243 624ha, as compared to 773 968ha during the 2015-2016 season, said Dr Made.

Given the success recorded under the Command Agriculture Scheme so far, VP Mnangagwa said the model has been extended to the production of cotton, soya beans as well as livestock. He said increased cotton and soya beans yields were crucial for revitalising agro-processing industries, which have a huge employment creation potential and also assisting the country in import substitution.

As such, the Vice President said, preparations for winter cropping for both maize and wheat were already underway with necessary support available for interested farmers. He said Government’s strategy was to utilise every water resource for irrigation farming so as to achieve food security. Government has said it is targeting to plant 70 000ha of wheat, with $140 million required for the purpose. Out of the 8 400 tonnes of seed that is required for the crop, 3 200 is already available, while 35 000 tonnes of Compound fertiliser have also been secured, said Dr Made.

“To date, Treasury has made a provisional budget of $62 million to be channelled towards grain purchase and more resources are being mobilised,” said Dr Made last week.

“The Agricultural Marketing Authority is making arrangements as directed by Treasury and $80 million is targeted for that.”

Recent reports indicate that the Grain marketing Board (GMB) had a capacity to store four million tonnes of grains at its depots and that $7 million was required to carry out maintenance works at the cylindrical concrete silos countrywide.

ZRP Cop Arrested For Armed Robbery

The police officer who is alleged to have robbed a Total Service Station in Bulawayo at gun point last month, appeared in court yesterday.

Amos Hlori (39) works under the Police Special Tactics (PSTT) unit and is stationed at Fairbridge Police Camp.

He allegedly robbed the service station of $158 and a cellphone belonging to a petrol attendant using an AK 47.

The robbery was captured on closed circuit television (CCTV) and the victim positively identified Hlori at a parade.

Bulawayo Magistrate Mr Tinashe Tashaya did not ask Hlori to plead to attempted murder and armed robbery charges and remanded him in custody to March 15.

State allegations are that on February 8 at 3AM, Hlori arrived at the service station with his head covered with a jacket hood.

Prosecuting, Mr Nkathazo Dlodlo said Hlori found one Mr Munyaradzi Mujajati (35), a petrol attendant, alone on duty, drew an AK 47 from his jacket and demanded money.

“Complainant panicked when he saw the gun. He fled into an office and pressed a panic button. Accused followed complainant and fired one shot into the office. The bullet penetrated a glass door panel, slightly missing complainant,” said Mr Dlodlo.

“Fearing for his life, Mujajati handed Hlori $158 from a fuel safe and his cell phone. The robbery was captured on CCTV. Fawcett Security Rapid Response arrived 10 minutes after accused had left.

“A police report was made. Investigating officers tracked and recovered complainant’s cell phone from a person the accused allegedly sold the gadget to.

The person implicated the accused person. Complainant managed to identify accused person at a parade”. – State Media

BLOODY ELECTIONS: “Mugabe Used Us” – War Vets Claim

Disgruntled war veterans were weighing up their options last night after panicking authorities banned their planned get-together in Harare tomorrow — a move they say is meant to pressure them to ditch their withering criticism of President Robert Mugabe as Zanu PF’s ugly succession wars intensify.

This comes after police revealed yesterday that they had not cleared the crucial indaba which the vocal leadership of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) says it had called to discuss the welfare of former freedom fighters, as well as the ever-deteriorating social and political situation in the country.

At the same time, well-placed Zanu PF sources told the Daily News that panicking party bigwigs had claimed that the disaffected war veterans’ meeting had not been sanctioned because they were allegedly planning to discuss the warring ruling party’s divisive succession riddle.

But police said the planned meeting had been banned on the grounds that the war vets did
not meet the full requirements of the much-criticised Public Order and Security Act (Posa), which governs the convening of public meetings.

Contacted by the Daily News, a seething ZNLWVA spokesperson, Douglas Mahiya, denied vehemently that the planned indaba was going to be a political gathering, also accusing the police of applying the law “selectively”.

“Listen, this meeting is not a political party meeting. We are looking forward to have all war veterans gathering for the purpose of reviewing the country’s political, economic and social progress since Zimbabwe’s independence from Britain in 1980

“The law is being applied selectively and we would like to ask why this is so? Our requirements are being stifled. The MDC and other parties are granted permission to have their programmes but not war veterans.

“Why is it that war veterans are being denied their rights? Where have we gone wrong? Yet we are simply talking about issues affecting people and our suffering.

“We are very worried about the position that has been taken by our party. Although we have given everything to the party, when it comes to enjoying the power that many sacrificed for, war veterans are being treated like second-class citizens,” Mahiya complained.

He emphasised that tomorrow’s planned meeting had been called to discuss and map the way forward after Mugabe and the Zanu PF government had failed to honour their pledges which they made during the two parties’ meeting in April last year.

“We pose no threat to anyone at all. We were tear-gassed and beaten last year even as the truth is that we want peace.

“We held a meeting last year and we did not discuss the issues affecting us. So, the reason we plan to meet is the same, our welfare.

“We also wanted to discuss why we are now being regarded as useless people in Zanu PF politics, yet we freed the country. Comrades should be patient, because we are going to have the meeting.

“We now feel like aliens in our own land. Even the ministry (of War Veterans) does not show that they are concerned about us,” Mahiya said, adding that it was baffling to many why the Zanu PF youth and women’s leagues were not being subjected to the same poor treatment that was being meted out to war veterans.

In February last year, war veterans were battered by heavily-armed police after they trooped into Harare for a meeting with Mugabe, who later held a televised address to the nation after the incident denying that such a meeting had been organised.

Without mincing his words, Mugabe also pointedly accused war vets chairperson and former Cabinet minister Christopher Mutsvangwa of having misled the former freedom fighters to come to the capital for the unscheduled meeting.

“For him (Mutsvangwa) to have called a meeting which we knew nothing about, in circumstances in which he had not clearly sought permission from the authorities in violation therefore of the law, and he being a minister, he cannot at the end, after the law and order officers have taken action against the meeting and the war veterans, complain that he was ill-treated.

“He must bear the responsibility,” Mugabe thundered, adding that Mutsvangwa would pay for his misdemeanours.

Police fired teargas and sprayed water on the gathered group of war veterans who had trickled into the capital to attend the planned meeting at the City Sports Centre.

The war vets later managed to secure a meeting with Mugabe, who promised them that his government would address some of their grievances, including paying school fees for their children.

The ex-combatants’ close to 42-year relationship with Mugabe ended mid last year over their worsening plight, and the country’s deepening political and economic rot.
Since that fallout, which hit media headlines after they released a damning communiqué in which they savaged the Zanu PF leader before serving him with divorce papers, the ex-combatants have not missed an opportunity to attack Mugabe.

Until that fallout, the fed-up ex-combatants had served as Mugabe and Zanu PF’s main power base, waging particularly brutal campaigns against popular opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and the MDC, especially in the bloody elections of 2000 and 2008.

But the nasty divorce had severe consequences for the leadership of the former freedom
fighters as Mutsvangwa was fired from both the Cabinet and the ruling party, while many of their other leaders were banished from the imploding former liberation movement, in addition to being hauled before the courts.

In ending their relationship with Mugabe, war vets  claimed that the nonagenarian’s continued stay in power was now a stumbling block to the country’s development, adding rather derisively that Zimbabwe’s long-ruling leader would be “a hard-sell” if he ever contemplated contesting next year’s  presidential poll.

The disgruntled former freedom fighters have also since been ratcheting up their loud calls for Mugabe to retire immediately and pave the way for his long-time aide, Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, to take over the reins at both party and government levels.
Analysts said yesterday that the refusal by the police to sanction the war veterans’ planned meeting tomorrow was consistent with claims by the opposition and pro-democracy groups that authorities applied the law selectively.

“It shows that the police are partisan and act selectively in applying the law. It also shows that for Mugabe, the succession debate remains taboo, no matter who raises it, and that
includes VP Mnangagwa and the war veterans.

“It seems there will be no succession debate or identification of a successor while Mugabe is around,” political analyst Dewa Mavhinga told the Daily News. – Daily News

Kasukuwere Brings Zanu PF Bulawayo To Order

ZANU-PF National Commissar Saviour Kasukuwere yesterday called for an immediate end to the chaos rocking Bulawayo structures warning that such acts would result in the party performing badly in next year’s elections.

Kasukuwere’s sentiments come following violent demonstrations that rocked the party last Thursday and Sunday as a culmination of infighting within the provincial youth league.

Addressing a Provincial coordinating Committee at the Davies Hall provincial offices, Kasukuwere said the fights rocking Bulawayo bordered on pettiness saying the party would not tolerate such behaviour.

He said Bulawayo was backsliding to its former chaotic set up where the party was run through petitions and demonstrations.

“Zanu-PF is not in Bulawayo alone. Zanu-PF is in Zimbabwe, there are other places where the party is moving nicely, why shouldn’t it be in Bulawayo?

Why do we think that Bulawayo is where we can cause disturbances? To what end?

“What has happened in Bulawayo? Comrades we want order in Bulawayo, where there are differences, sit down, close the door and talk. The direction which you are taking unfortunately will not help anyone. It will not help the party,” said Kasukuwere.

“Insults against each other is not the way to go in the party, the party is about working together, be respectful of each other, yes among people there will be differences but those differences must not affect the party.”

Kasukuwere said the Bulawayo structures needed to work towards getting back seats that have eluded the party since 2000 adding that the province has for the first time in many years, a Cabinet minister who is a Member of Parliament (Cde Tshinga Dube). “We can’t continue, 20 years later, the MDC is still in control of City Hall. Zanu-PF must now take over and resolve the challenges that face the people here in Bulawayo. It’s critical for the party to be stable,” said Kasukuwere.

He challenged the party to make sure that it retains the six MPs who were voted into office during the 2015 by elections and not leave the party in disarray.

“What is happening here is that you will end up without anything to talk about. My appeal here is let’s get together and stay focused. Let’s not focus on petty fights, let’s focus on the bigger issue of strengthening our party. Don’t you want Zanu-PF to be strong?

“Don’t you want to overcome the MDC?” asked Kasukuwere.

He warned some members to desist from engaging in acts that embarrass Zanu-PF yet they contribute nothing to the party.

“You want to make a lot of noise like you brought anybody but when we say show us the people you have recruited, they don’t even constitute half of a district,” said Kasukuwere.

“What you are doing is a self defeating exercise. Any commotion in the party will not auger well for Zanu-PF. If you love Zanu- PF, stay focused.”

Responding to reports of some youths who resigned from their positions in Bulawayo, Kasukuwere said the party did not have a shortage of manpower and replacements would be found.

He said the party does not have any credible opposition with divisions rocking the MDCs and the problems bedevilling Dr Joice Mujuru to the point of forming a new party.

He said the party was being infiltrated by negative forces hence the need for vigilance and to rally behind President Mugabe ahead of the 2018 elections.

Kasukuwere said the party has withstood previous challenges and warned those working towards destabilising President Mugabe’s rule that the sun would soon set on them.

He said there were some characters who heap praises on President Mugabe during the day and plot his downfall under the cover of darkness. “We see some who are getting closer to treason, you are about to cross a line that should not be crossed. Don’t be used to do some things that will cost you,” saidKasukuwere.

He said the party was also aware of individuals disbursing money to fuel divisions in the party.

Meanwhile, Kasukuwere yesterday revealed that Mpehlabayo Malinga had been promoted to the position of National deputy Secretary for Youth Affairs. Previously he held the position of Secretary for External Affairs. – State Media

14 Dead In Horror Crash : Family Member Speaks Out

The 14 people from two families who perished in an accident in Bulawayo on Wednesday night were travelling to Masvingo to bury their teenage child.

The young boy, Hopewell Masukume (14), passed away at Mpilo Central Hospital on Monday after a long illness.

The families were heading to Mwenezi for the burial which had been set for yesterday morning.

Speaking to state media, the boy’s maternal grandfather, Mr Kenny Sibanda, said he heard news of the tragic accident in the morning.

“I saw the accident on the early morning news on TV and I knew it was my family as I had last spoken to them at 9PM before departure from Bulawayo. I called other relatives to seek clarification and it was confirmed they are indeed my family. It’s such a loss and I’m yet to come to terms with it,” said Mr Sibanda.

He said Hopewell was his daughter’s son and he had been footing his medical bills since December.

“He was supposed to be in Form Two but he was no longer attending school due to illness. I was constantly buying blood for transfusion,” said Mr Sibanda.

He said he survived the horror crash because his bosses did not allow him to travel for the funeral.

“They told me the only funerals I could attend were my wife’s or those of my biological children, hence I failed to travel,” said Mr Sibanda.

He said Hopewell’s father who had separated with his daughter was now based in South Africa and was already in Mwenezi for the burial.

Mr Sibanda said among the deceased were his three children, Gift, Gracious and the boy’s mother Savia, his brother Luke, ex-wife and mother to the three deceased, Rebecca Dube and her younger sister Margaret.

The other two, he said, are his niece, Sibonile Mbele and a neighbour Gladys Phiri who was accompanying the mourners.

He said among the survivors were his wife Ruth, nephew Isaac Ndlovu and niece Enert Sibanda.

“I heard that my wife’s condition is stable, she suffered chest injuries. My nephew is at Mpilo where he is nursing a broken leg but I understand ukuthi kasakhulumi,” said Mr Sibanda.

He said the other deceased were from the Masukume family and they had no contact with them.

Mourners are gathered at 5621 Emganwini suburb. – State Media

HSB Bosses Named In Vehicle Abuse Scandal

Top Health Services Board (HSB) executives are allegedly abusing five Global Fund programme vehicles meant for the fight against Aids, tuberculosis and malaria by using them as executive cars. This comes after the same institution was criticised by the office of the Auditor-General in her 2014 report on State enterprises and parastatals for hiring vehicles for executives and board members at a cost of $3 000 each a month, resulting in them gobbling about $450 000 on car hire in 2014 alone.

The state media says that a Ford Everest registration number GHCW is being used as an executive car by board member Mrs Tendai Watungwa, Ford Ranger ADR 6605 is being used by the executive director Ms Ruth Kaseke.

Toyota Hiluxes registration numbers GHCC 1866 and GHCW 1452 are being used by general manager administration and finance Mr Assail Machakata, and human resources manager Mrs Nornah Zhou.

Monitoring and evaluation manager Mr Angelbert Mbengwa is using a Toyota Hilux GHCW 1019.

This is contrary to the loan agreement for the vehicles signed between the UNDP and the HSB.

According to the loan agreement, the vehicles are to be used only for United Nations Development Programmes supported by the Global Fund.

These programmes include monitoring staff retention in health institutions dotted across the country.

“Under no circumstances should a project vehicle be used as if it was the personal property of the sub-recipient (HSB) staffs/manager or their families.

“The use of UNDP vehicles on non-business days/holidays should be avoided as far as possible,” reads part of the agreement.

“It is understood and agreed that the vehicles must be used only for official business in support of the implementation of UNDP projects financed by the Global Fund and it is prohibited to use these vehicles for other purposes.

“It is also understood and agreed that after office hours, or when not in use, vehicles must be parked at a garage or in secure area designated in writing by the sub-recipient and approved by UNDP,” further reads the agreement.

In contrast to the agreement, sources close to the happenings claimed that the officials were using the vehicles as executive cars and taking them to their homes at the expense of programme implementation in provinces.

“There are HSB monitoring and evaluation officers who are failing to get to the districts because they do not have vehicles,” added the source.

Contacted for comment, HSB monitoring and evaluation director Mr Mbengwa insisted that the board was adhering to the defined policy and administrative provisions governing the use of the vehicles.

“There are specific activities defined in the Global Fund project and the resources for the implementation of those activities are used as per the agreement,” said Mr Mbengwa.

He said HSB had continued with field visits to central hospitals, provinces and districts in line with the approved work plans and had even submitted field visits reports as required by the programme.

In addition, Mr Mbengwa said the HSB had always availed itself for auditing by the Global Fund and other related agencies — the latest of such audits having been carried out three weeks ago. He, however, bemoaned lack of adequate funding for the board to respond to conditions of service for its executives and fund general operations saying HSB sorely relied on funding from the fiscus.

“The limited fiscal space that has been reported widely in the Press, therefore, negatively impacts on the board’s operations. Nonetheless, efforts are being made to address the issue of conditions of service vehicles for senior members and general operations,” he said.

The HSB was created in terms of the Health Service Act (Chapter 15:16) to superintend over the human resources for health policies in the public health sector, including the welfare of all public health workers. – state media

MUGABE SUCCESSION: Mnangagwa Out As Dark Horses Emerge

Recent remarks by President Robert Mugabe suggesting that none of his two deputies — Emmerson Mnangagwa and Phelekezela Mphoko — are considered “by the people” as suitable candidates to succeed him have opened wide the cutthroat succession race, creating the real possibility of dark horses emerging to take the coveted prize.

Analysts who spoke to journalists this week said President Mugabe’s comments had the effect of taking away a semblance of predictability that was beginning to develop in the race to decide who would take over the leadership of the ruling ZANU-PF party, and possibly the country as well, from the veteran leader.

During his traditional birthday interviews, President Mugabe dropped a bombshell when he revealed that his two Vice Presidents did not have the confidence of the people to take over from him.  “The majority of the people feel that there is no replacement, a successor, who to them is acceptable, as acceptable as I am,” he said.

He pointed out that his ZANU-PF party had just re-posited on him a fresh mandate to contest the 2018 presidential election in spite of his age which to him was a clear sign of the lack of confidence in his two deputies.  “The call to step down must come from my party, my party at congress, my party at Central Committee. But then what do you see? It’s the opposite.

“They want me to stand for elections. Of course, if I feel that I cannot do it anymore, I will say so to my party so that they relieve me. But, for now, I think I can’t say so…” The remarks were seen as effectively slamming the door on Mnangagwa, who until the latest development was being touted as President Mugabe’s heir apparent as he was seen — and also behaved — as someone who was already having one hand on the trophy.
The fight to decide who will succeed President Mugabe has seen his party being divided along two clear factions, Generation 40 (G40) and Team Lacoste.

The latter, backed largely by war veterans, favours Mnangagwa to take over, while the former — comprising mostly women and the youths — wants the incumbent to rule for life.
Mnangagwa has publicly distanced himself from Team Lacoste and its members who claim to be speaking on his behalf.

And from this messy political infighting a dark horse may emerge to land the presidency.
The term dark horse — first used by Benjamin Disraeli in the novel, The Young Duke — comes from an unknown horse that won a race much to the chagrin of bookmakers who had not anticipated its victory.

This is a possibility that analysts says now exist in the race to succeed President Mugabe.
University of Zimbabwe lecturer, Eldred Masunungure, said President Mugabe’s comments defeat the purpose of him having deputies both at party and national levels because the idea of having them in the first place is to help him in the performance of his duties and to facilitate a smooth transfer of power.

Masunungure — who is also the director of the Mass Public Opinion Institute — said a dark horse scenario was only possible with the incumbent’s active involvement.
“It depends almost entirely on one of two likely scenarios. The scenarios are simply: (a) the succession during President Mugabe’s lifetime; and (b) the succession after (President) Mugabe,” he said.

“As I see it, the dark horse possibility is only applicable under scenario (a) and not scenario (b). The dark horse can only emerge through (President) Mugabe himself anointing his successor; that is choosing his successor during his lifetime. Further, he will then shepherd the transition of power from himself to the dark horse and market the latter to his party and nation. In addition, (President) Mugabe would need to live long enough thereafter to allow the dark horse to consolidate power around him/her. This means that if there are any dark horses lurking out there, they should pray that they are anointed while the President is still around and that the President lives long enough to do so.

“The second scenario — succession after (President) Mugabe — does not allow for a dark horse. This scenario only allows for hard politics based on hard power where those who possess or can muster the hard power resources will win State House. This scenario does not provide for anointment by the incumbent and therefore does not provide for a dark horse. The fundamental question then is, which scenario is most likely. That can only be answered by our maker,” said Masunungure.

Another analyst, Ibbo Mandaza, an academic, said it was clear from President Mugabe’s comments and the other developments that have taken place in the party since the beginning of the year that cold water has been poured on the Mnangagwa option.

“First it was the interview by Jonathan Moyo in a local weekly (in which Moyo, a fairly political lightweight in the party, made disparaging remarks about Mnangagwa’s suitability to succeed President Mugabe)… it was clear that he was not speaking without some backing.
Then there was the (Buhera) rally by the First Lady. And then came the birthday interview which was followed by his (President’s) speech at his birthday,” Mandaza recalled.

He said the sum total of all these developments clearly showed that President Mugabe had someone in his mind, but he has so far managed to keep the identity of that person to himself.

Mandaza, however, pointed out that one of the dark horses that could emerge from this development was current Defence Minister, Sydney Sekeramayi — who turns 73 this month — a medical doctor and veteran of the liberation struggle who has not shown any public interest to contest in the fierce race.

The soft-spoken, physician who left Swedish medical school in the mid-70s and headed straight to join the Zimbabwe National Liberation Army forces in Mozambique, is seen as a loyalist of President Mugabe who has managed to keep himself clear of the factional fights in ZANU-PF.

A level-headed politician and none of the two factions hate him, although none of them can claim to love him.

A career Cabinet minister since 1980, Sekeramayi has presided over virtually most of the key ministries and he has the added advantage of being one of the few politicians less tainted by allegations of corruption.

There are also suggestions that President Mugabe could be seriously considering grooming his wife, Grace, to take over from him if he cannot get someone whom he can trust to continue safeguarding his legacy as well as to insure the security of his fairly young family.
Currently, the leader of the ZANU-PF Women’s League, has been holding whirlwind rallies across the country, rallies that many have viewed as possibly testing the waters before making up her mind on whether to sponsor someone or to get into the race herself.

With a solid women and youths backing behind her, she could emerge a serious contender for the throne if President Mugabe could give her the much-needed head start.

A number of politicians who have no liberation war credentials, among them Ignatius Chombo, David Parirenyatwa, son of the late nationalist, Samuel Tichafa Parirenyatwa, and Edna Madzongwe are also being mentioned in ZANU-PF corridors as capable of springing up surprises.

Chombo has risen the fastest in the ZANU-PF, and occupies position number four in the top echelons of the party, as secretary for administration.

Parirenyatwa is one of the few children of former liberation war stalwarts President Mugabe has accommodated in his Cabinet. He is seen providing the bridge between the future and the past.

Woman Sets Dogs On Debt Collectors

A Harare woman recently set her two ferocious dogs on debt collectors who had visited her house to serve a threatening letter of demand over an outstanding water bill.

“They knocked at the gate once and stormed my property without permission. The dogs leapt from that tree shed and sped in their direction,” she said, gesturing as she tried to describe the action at her home in Waterfalls.

“They screamed, dropped the letter and took to their heels, noisily slamming the gate behind them to shut the dogs in. I did not restrain the dogs because I wanted them to get a taste of their nuisance,” she recounted without any regret.

She insisted she did not owe the local authority a dime as she pays her bills religiously.
With many of the country’s citizens reeling in debt due to economic challenges, getting payment from those who owe money has become a huge business for legal practitioners — with plenty of opportunities for lawyers to find work.

Ideally, a debt should be paid the moment it falls due. Sadly, Zimbabweans are developoing a habit of not paying their debts. Part of the reason is that the ruling ZANU-PF party has been spoiling the electorate with freebies in order to get votes.

In the run-up to the 2013 polls, power utility ZESA Holdings and local authorities were directed to write-off debts owed to them by the public.

This generosity did the trick for the party, as ZANU-PF romped to victory in the elections.
It did the exact opposite to councils, as their financial positions deteriorated further, resulting in service delivery worsening.

The freebies extended to farming inputs such as seed and fertilisers which were dished out to farmers like confetti at a wedding.

Because they are now used to free things, most Zimbabweans are not ashamed at all to default on their debt payments. Former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor, Gideon Gono, can bear testimony to this.

After launching the Farm Mechanisation Programme in 2007, the RBZ distributed millions of dollars worth of equipment to farmers in the hope that they would pay for it after their harvest in 2010.

Nothing of the sort happened. In the end, government was forced to inherit the debt through the RBZ Debt Assumption Bill of 2015, which was enacted into law that same year.
Most institutions are sinking because of poorly performing debtors, on top of the pile being public institutions such as ZESA, the Zimbabwe National Water Authority, municipalities and public hospitals.

In order to rein in on defaulters, most institutions are seeking the services of debt collectors to hunt down their debtors at a fee.

But this has created a big mess whereby illegal debt collectors have proliferated, taking advantage of citizens who are ignorant of the law.

The debt collectors operate without any legal mandate and mete extrajudicial settlement — one that is not legally authorised or not made in court.

Zimbabwean laws do not provide for the existence or operation of debt collectors.
Essentially, debt collection is a specific type of litigation, and only lawyers certified by the Law Society of Zimbabwe (LSZ) are required to follow up on debts on behalf of clients, and they can only attach people’s assets through the Messenger of Court or the High Court sheriff after a court order.

This is enshrined in the Legal Practitioners Act (part five), which clearly specifies that only lawyers can collect debts on behalf of clients.

Explaining the process to be followed, top lawyer Davison Kanokanga said a creditor can issue a final demand for payment in the event of a claim arising from the failure to pay for services rendered, or for goods sold and delivered or failure to service a loan according to the terms agreed between the creditor and debtor.

“The Sheriff or Messenger of Court delivers the warrant to the debtor (who is now, after the judgment has been given, called the judgment debtor) and the debtor either pays the debt or if the debtor cannot or will not pay the debt the Sheriff or Messenger of Court attaches (and possibly removes for sale) items sufficient to cover the judgment debt and costs. After selling attached property, the Sheriff or the Messenger of Court pays the judgment creditor what is due to him/her in terms of the court order,” he said.

Admittedly, high legal costs are driving many people from lawyers in preference for debt collectors.

While there are some success stories among those who sought the services of debt collectors, others have ended up regretting it after their attempts fell through due to their illegality.

Interestingly, even organisations such as the City of Harare, which has a fully-fledged legal department, have been engaging the debt collectors to collect money owed by residents in water bills and rates.

The company contracted by the city fathers has been wreaking havoc around the capital as it distributes threatening letters of demand, giving residents stringent deadlines and promising aggressive action ranging from attachment of assets and civil imprisonment in the event that the amount owed — which in some cases runs into thousands of dollars — is not paid in full.

Ominously, in some instances, money is being demanded from people who would have fully settled their bills while in other cases, people who do not have access to piped municipal water are asked to pay.

For example, some areas such Mabvuku, Msasa Park and Highlands have not had council water for years, including some parts of Kuwadzana and Budiriro that have new settlements yet to be connected to the Harare water system.

Notwithstanding the lack of provision of water, people in these areas are also being accused of failing to pay for water bills.

Some of the threatening letters have also been sent out to residents of illegal settlements, which the local authority does not recognise and has repeatedly threatened to demolish.
The city has also allowed the debt collecting company to set up a temporary banking hall at its Rowan Martin building where petrified residents could be seen flocking to make payments or negotiate payment plans.

Defaulting ratepayers are given a final urgent notice of 48 hours to pay the full amount in question.

A penalty fee based on the prevailing rate would be charged if they do not pay within the stipulated period.

“Note that you shall pay the overdue amount plus summons costs as court fees and interest thereof as well as further legal costs incurred by engaging a Messenger of Court in pursuant of the debt. Civil imprisonment proceedings shall be taken against you if you do not have enough assets to clear your debt,” reads part of a notice from the debt collector seen by the Financial Gazette.

At law, there are no 48 hour notices. This felonious partnership between councils and debt collectors has courted the wrath of legal advocacy groups, civil society organisations and legal experts who have been critical of the existence, behaviour and operations of debt collectors.

Lawyers canvassed by the Financial Gazette said while the Legal Practitioners Act prohibits abuse by debt collectors, such as harassing phone calls and deceptive letters, no-one is paying attention to it.

Facebook“That’s like a lion trying to catch an impala,” said Harare lawyer, Takudzwa Mafongoya referring to City of Harare’s bid to unleash debt collectors on its multitude of debtors.

“It gets one from the herd, but there’s no threat to the others, yet in any case it is violation of the law and it should not be tolerated,” he said, describing debt collectors as “fake sheriffs and phantom firms”.

Sometimes the behaviour of debt collectors is egregious to the point of being ridiculous. Some debtors are called incessantly, often well into the night.
Others reported being threatened with arrest by collectors, which is prohibited.
Some debt collectors even go to the extent of dressing and branding their cars as deputy sheriffs so that they could deliver fake subpoenas.

“They are taking advantage of people when they are most vulnerable, at the worst times of their lives,” moaned outgoing LSZ president, Vimbai Nyemba.

“Debt collection work is for legal practitioners alone and whoever attempts or purports to hold himself/herself out as a debt collector will be seriously breaching the law. In addition, such a person will also be snatching away legal work that should otherwise legitimately be
that of legal practitioners,” she said.

Curiously, none of the government agencies that should be taking up these issues are bothered.

Parliamentarians are also too busy with other things while the people they purport to represent are being harassed left, right and centre without them raising a finger.
Recently, a grouping of debt collectors drew their own constitution to govern their sector although legal experts dismissed the charter as an illegal document which is invalid in terms of the law.

“I have read somewhere that there is actually a constitution they rely on as their regulating document. However, as long as they deal with the greater public, they ought to be pushing for an Act of Parliament to regulate their affairs if they really want recognition,” said Harare lawyer, Philip Nyakutombwa.

“No citizen should lose their property for a debt without due process and a court order being secured, but you get a client calling to say there is a debt collector at my house to get my property, without even a court order,” he added. Financial Gazette

Chinamasa Claims Massive Economy Boom

economy boom claim…Patrick Chinamasa

Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa has claimed a massive economy growth rate rise from 1, 7 percent to 3, 7 percent.

Chinamasa says he has revised this year’s economic growth rate due to prospects of a bumper harvest expected this farming season and positive results already trickling in from sweeping economic policies being implemented across all sectors of the economy.

Among other things, Chinamasa said he is addressing issues to do with ease of doing business, policy clarity, high cost of doing business and engagement of the international community to bring back the country on a robust economic revival path.

Addressing military officers attending the Joint Command and Staff Course Number 30 in Harare yesterday, Finance and Economic Development Minister Patrick Chinamasa said this good harvests anchored on Command Agriculture expected this year would spur economic growth nationally.

“We have never spent as much money as we have done on agriculture as we have done this season,” said Minister Chinamsa.

“I am pleased that with the blessings of the Almighty, who gave us abundant rains, we are anticipating growth in agriculture. In fact, we are revising growth in the agricultural sector which in turn we are revising the overall growth. I anticipate after the revision our growth to be around 3, 7 percent from 0, 7 percent or so that we had anticipated in the 2017 National Budget.

“We are looking at maize, we are anticipating production of around US$3 billion from all sectors – Command (Agriculture), Presidential Input Scheme, A2 farmers, A1 farmers, those who did not subscribe to Command Agriculture we are expecting grain delivery of 3 million metric tonnes. This is over and above what we achieved last year of around 1 million metric tonnes, even less around 750 000 metric tonnes.

Mnangagwa Plots To Grab Women’s League From Grace

A RULING ZANU-PF faction agitating for Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa to succeed President Robert Mugabe is understood to be frantically working to reclaim critical party organs from its rival, after its clear victory in Masvingo’s provincial elections a fortnight ago.
This comes as public brawls between the factions — Team Lacoste and Generation 40 (G40) — broke out in the aftermath of commemorations for President Mugabe’s 93rd birthday in Matobo.

The clashes involved provincial members in Harare, Bulawayo and Mashonaland Central.
Sources said this week Team Lacoste, which supports Mnangagwa, was mobilising district youth chairpersons in Harare and Bulawayo to gang up against their provincial and national leaders in the league as the faction seeks to destabilise G40.

Ructions are also emerging in the Women’s Leagues, where daggers are being drawn against some national executive members belonging to the G40 faction.

Following a fall-out between G40 and Team Lacoste members who had rallied together to plot the expulsion of former vice president Joice Mujuru in 2014, G40 members had orchestrated the expulsion of Team Lacoste executives in provincial, youth and women’s leagues, resulting in their takeover of the critical organs.

Although this had left Team Lacoste tottering, G40 failed to rally the President to clearly annihilate the faction from the party, giving it latitude to re-organise.

At least three provincial leaders from Team Lacoste, who had been suspended for allegedly destabilising the party, were cleared just before the party’s national conference in Masvingo in December.

Although G40 frustrated their reinstatement as provincial chairmen, Team Lacoste successfully lobbied for an election in one of the provinces, Masvingo, where a G40 candidate received a drubbing.

Results from that election have been withheld by the party on account of the fact that certain districts did not vote because of floods.

But the outcome, which clearly gives a Team Lacoste candidate a wide victory, has buoyed Mnangagwa’s camp, which is now plotting to retake the Women’s and Youth Leagues as well as the provincial structures.

There is already discord in the Women’s League, where members are agitating for the expulsion of treasurer, Sarah Mahoka, and secretary for information, Eunice Sandi Moyo.
Sources said Youth League boss, Kudzanai Chipanga, who is linked to G40, is one of the key targets of Team Lacoste.

Chipanga replaced Pupurai Togarepi, who was relieved of his duties for allegedly supporting Mnangagwa’s bid for power.

According to sources, Team Lacoste is taking advantage of the logistical nightmares surrounding the Matobo event to fight Chipanga.

A source said it was clear Mnangagwa’s faction was “fighting hard to regain control of the Youth League”, but indicated that it may find it difficult to claim a stake in the Women’s League.

District chairpersons in Harare are currently understood to be preparing a petition against the interim Harare provincial youth chairman, Edson Takataka.

“We spent the night sleeping in the open, exposed to mosquito bites. There was no food and when we tried to call our national leaders to air our grievances, they were not answering our calls. They think they are wise and we are fools, but we are getting them,” said one district youth chair who claimed to be speaking on behalf of a number of disgruntled colleagues. -Financial Gazette

CREATING A WORLD OF EXCELLENCE

MUGABE OUT: Tsvangirai Speaks On Election Participation

President Morgan Tsvangirai’s statement to the press

Introduction
The party’s national executive has just met, amid the context of a worsening national crisis and Zanu PF’s attempt to steal the next election, even before that election is held.
I will appraise you on these and other key issues that we have deliberated upon in the national executive, including the people’s views that I gathered during my one-and-half months’ tour of the country’s provinces since the end of January this year. Some of the people’s inputs during my tour were strategic, some informed party policy while others were exclusively internal advice to the party and I hope you will understand if I do not give you the full bouquet of the people’s views.

However, we have mainly called this press briefing to highlight some of the important national issues that are pre-occupying the party and its organs, including the national executive that has just met.

1.  The brazen attempt to steal the next election
A fortnight ago, the nation was startled to hear that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, a supposedly independent Commission, had allowed the Zanu PF government to hijack the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) exercise, in the process casting fresh doubts on the prospect for a free, fair and credible election in 2018.

Given our history of stolen elections, everyone was confident with the process in which the United Nations was involved through the UNDP.

Elections are about confidence and credibility and the involvement of the respected world body had given everyone reason to believe in the freeness, fairness and credibility of the process leading to the 2018 elections.

The government, as currently composed, constitutes of one political party. It is pertinent to note that when a government so-constituted hijacks an important process, it means simply that Zanu PF, an interested party, has unilaterally taken over the work of an independent Commission ahead of a watershed poll. This should be cause for national alarm, given how Zanu PF has in the past used violence and dubious companies such as Nikuv International Projects to steal the people’s vote.

No political party that should be allowed to unilaterally superintend an electoral process as that can only imperil or endanger the people’s will.

We are hearing more disturbing reports about what this government is doing to subvert the will of the people in the next election. For instance, we are aware of teams that have been working and training under the tutelage of a spy agency of a country that shall remain nameless for now. There is also a ploy to have NIKUV International Projects get registered under surrogate names in an attempt to enable the company to win the tender to supply the BVR kits.

If Zimbabwe proceeds to use the BVR system, which Zanu PF is not keen to do, we are also aware of plans to have Nikuv International Projects work with some named Indian companies in hacking or engaging in cyber attacks on the whole electoral system once it becomes clear that the results are not going in Zanu PF’s favour.

We are aware therefore that plans are afoot to either control or derail the BVR process, frustrate voter registration and the actual voting in perceived opposition strongholds. We know as well that there are plans to tamper with silver nitrate and other inks such as UV ink that may be used in order to fudge the result of the next election.

As a party, together with our colleagues in the broader democratic movement, we take great umbrage at the brazen hostile take-over of the electoral process by a political party when such work is solely reposed in an independent Commission. The party’s national executive has just met and I wish to restate its resolution that as a party, we will utilize all legitimate and constitutionally permissible avenues at our disposal to stop this daylight theft. Whether in the courts or in the streets, we shall fight all attempts to steal the next election and we fully endorse the resolution that we took with others under the banner of NERA to mobilize Zimbabweans for a public protest on the 22nd of March!

Indeed, come hail come high water, we will do all we can to stem the subversion of the people’s will.

As MDC, together with our colleagues in the NERA and others in the broader democratic movement, we will continue to demand from ZEC that it takes urgent steps to chlorinate the electoral process and restore national confidence.

Our demands include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. A credible voters’ roll
A credible voters’ roll is mandatory and if there is continued dithering and subversion of the biometric voter registration process, then we can ensure that prospective voters simply produce their IDs, as happened in the election of 1980.

2. Civil servants and traditional leaders to stick to their constitutional roles
There is need to redefine the role of bureaucrats and other civil servants during elections in line with the dictates of the Constitution. Those whose roles should be aligned include the police, the army and intelligence services some of whom have been stuffed into the ZEC secretariat. Apart from civil servants, it is important to re-emphasize the apolitical role of chiefs and headmen as defined in the Constitution of Zimbabwe. I heard sad stories from the chiefs themselves of how they are being politicized, including making them chairpersons of the Zanu PF cell structure to make them frog-march people to influence the vote at rural polling stations.

3. Stern action on vote-buying
Vote-buying by any means should be made a serious, punishable offence. We have seen key government actors associated with Zanu PF overtly buying votes with rice and ZIMRA-confiscated items, among other vote-buying gimmicks. We saw these antics in Norton and Bikita West, as well as in Buhera where ZIMRA goods were donated at the same time when the nation was being threatened with a corpse as a Presidential candidate.  Apart from being a punishable offence, vote-buying should be a basis for disqualification, even before the election is held.

4. Chlorinating the ZEC secretariat
There is urgent need to chlorinate the ZEC secretariat for it to be truly professional. The ZEC secretariat should be de-militarized and de-securotized as it is now common cause that it is heavily stuffed with members of the army, the police and the CIO. This is a key issue and even the 10 provincial officers of ZEC must be professional and must inspire confidence in all the political players.

5. Guaranteed access to the public media by all parties.
This is now a requirement in the Constitution, even where there are no elections. Media reforms remain a key electoral matter that continues to suffer from non-implementation, even where the Constitution is clear and unequivocal as stipulated in section 61 of the supreme law of the land.

6. Agreement on the printing of voting material
There is need for agreement by all parties on who is printing the ballot papers and other voting material. We have seen happening in other countries in the SADC as in the elections held in Namibia and Zambia. There is also need for a forensic testing and examination of ballot papers and other voting material before and after voting.

7. Presence of polling agents from all political parties at polling stations
Every political party must have polling agents at every polling station during the voting process.

8. Safety of candidates
All political candidates must be given the opportunity t campaign freely without fear, coercion or intimidation. Related to this, Zanu PF must disband youth officers, who mainly political agents doing party work in the wards at the expense of the State. This is highly anomalous and illegal as the taxpayer cannot be liable for agents directly carrying out Zanu PF work as is currently obtaining.

9. Diaspora Vote
It is now constitutional for every Zimbabwean to exercise his/her right to vote. The ZEC must ensure that it puts in place administrative and other mechanisms in place to ensure that every Zimbabwean, regardless of their physical location, exercises this Constitutional right.

10. Observers
If we really have nothing to hide, we must ensure that our polls are observed by all and sundry without preconditions—and without exclusionary tendencies towards certain observers. All observers without exception must be allowed to observe both before and after the election.

As the nation converges on a common agenda for progress, growth and development and for democracy to take hold, I wish to applaud war veterans for joining the rest of the country in making the same demands for which they fought a brutal but legitimate armed struggle against racism and repression.

We salute the ex-combatants for converging with the rest of the nation in making key national demands.

Not only are they calling for President Mugabe to step down in the interest of the country, but they have now joined the rest of the nation in the sonorous cry for democracy and for the protection of the right to vote, for which they fought and for which so many paid the ultimate price.

A message to our liberation war icons
On behalf of the party I lead, the broad democratic movement and on my own behalf, I want to assure the war veterans, ex-detainees and restrictees that Zimbabweans sincerely welcome their joining the legitimate national demand for the institution of democracy, beyond mere liberation and political independence. We sincerely welcome their withdrawal of support from the notion of one-man-rule and one-centre-of power which were never the objective of the brutal and protracted liberation struggle.

Together, let us confront those who have betrayed the ethos of that sacred war. Together, we can all complete the unfinished business of the liberation struggle. Indeed, our war veterans, with the support of the generality of our citizens, did not only fight for independence. They also fought for democracy and it was always going to be inadequate to assume the struggle was over merely upon the attainment of independence.

I promise the nation and our war veterans that some of us remain sticklers to the solemn commitments we collectively made in the Constitution, especially on the sanctity of our land and that the land reform programme is irreversible.

Fellow Zimbabweans should heed our assurance that we have no intention of stripping anyone of their land; save only to address issues of inequality in distribution and productivity on the land that genuinely belongs to us as Zimbabweans.

Some of us believe in giving beneficiaries the right to land so that this land, for which so many died, can be both an asset and a legacy that can be passed on to future generations. True, there will be rationalization in the allocation of land without any reversal of the sacred principle that Zimbabweans must own their land.

The Constitution is clear on the value we must attach to the liberation struggle and the war veterans who brought us independence through a brutal and protracted war. Their welfare and their plight are matters that we value and hold in sanctity.

Everything that is happening in our country today, including this despicable attempt to steal the next election, is a divergence from the core values and principles of the liberation struggle.

Our brothers and sisters went to war, not only to liberate the country but also to democratize it. As a nation, we have always placed a premium on the right to vote, then referred to as one-man-one-vote, itself one of the reasons the heroic people of Zimbabwe went to war. Any attack or subversion of the right to a credible vote is an assault on the ethos of the liberation struggle.

I want to assure Zimbabweans that we will do everything we can to protect their vote, even though we cannot do it alone. We appeal to all Zimbabweans to work together in the patriotic quest for this nation to hold free, fair and credible elections.

Indeed, I am encouraged by the growing national convergence in this regard, as well as the current efforts to rally all Zimbabweans beyond political parties to forge an alliance that will inspire the people and assure everyone of a new dispensation, come 2018.

My tour of the provinces
In the past one-and half months, I have been touring the country and listening to community leaders outside the party I lead. I am encouraged by the growing national convergence about what should be done in the interest of the citizens and the future generations. Indeed, I have realized that everyone and ever sector has got a genuine grievance against this regime and I know we are all agreed that 2018 provides us with a perfect opportunity to defeat the authors of this debilitating national crisis by ushering in a new, democratic dispensation.

Since January, I have traversed the length and breadth of this country. For f six weeks, I sat under trees, in village huts and in urban town-halls listening to our pastors, civic leaders and traditional healers. I have had very enriching engagements with our chiefs, headmen, village heads, civil servants, commuter bus drivers, rank marshals and ordinary villagers.

I spent hours with students, vendors, artisanal miners and the unemployed and derived comfort in the national consensus that 2018 is a watershed year for all of us, but more importantly for future generations.

Indeed, everyone and every sector have a genuine grievance against Zanu PF.

I listened to the wise words from my fellow countrymen and countrywomen. I  agree to the clarion call that we must all make for the sake of our country; the call never to allow a 94-year old to mismanage our affairs once again. I heard the appeal from across all sectors, that it would be tantamount to high treason to allow a 94-year old another five years, with some even suggesting they will field him as a corpse. It would be an insult to the people of this country to give this man and this party another five years.

Yes, Mugabe may lead his party but he must not be allowed to lead this country solely on the basis of age and past performance!

I am heartened by my fellow citizens and the effort we are collectively investing in ensuring that the country delivers a free, fair and credible poll in 2018. I am humbled by our fruitful engagements across political parties, across religions, across social classes, across religions, across gender and across artificial barriers—all for the sake of this dear country that we all love.

I listened to the people on the issue of political alliances and that as a party we must exercise due diligence on who we work with as some of these political parties do not have proper structures and membership while others are surrogates of Zanu PF.

I heard the cries of our chiefs, headmen and village heads, who are abused by Zanu PF; being forced to frog-march people and to engage in partisan food distribution. They said for all this abuse, they were paid a measly allowance of $25, which is now several months in arrears.

They also told me that Zanu PF had already begun to violate the Constitution, subsuming village heads into Zanu PF structures as cell chairpersons in a desperate attempt to control the environment around polling station by illegally creating dual role for village heads.
I heard the cry of the minorities that how they do not feel they are part of the country. The Venda, the Ndebele, the Kalanga, the Ndau, the Tonga and the Shangaan all told me sad stories of abuse that confirm the ignominy of the tyranny of the majority. There is a legitimate concern about exclusion and domination by those that feel they are the majority tribes in our country.

This is shameful, considering that this is the brave 21st century. We certainly cannot afford, in this day and age, to have people with a sense of entitlement by virtue of the fact that they come from a tribe they subjectively regard as a majority tribe.

It was an enriching experience. I will not forget the concerns, the advice and the genuine expectation from across the provinces that in 2018, we will hold a genuinely free, fair and credible poll. Zimbabweans out there expect their vote to count and their will to be respected so that even the skeptics can enjoy comfort and security under a new dispensation.

A message to the change skeptics
The next election holds a key to the future of our country. We will rise or fall as a nation by the choice we make in the ballot.

I have a message to those who have in the past resisted change and who remain keen to subvert the people’s will because of their uncertainty the prospect of political change in the country.

I wish to assure everyone that there is nothing to fear in the change that we seek. We have no intention to engage in retribution and we are only driven by the genuine patriotic spirit to ensure peace, stability and growth. Change will be good for everyone. Change will allow every one of us to pursue and live their dreams under the protection of the State.
In 2008, a large part of our fellow citizens in State institutions were reticent and suspicious about the prospect of change. The people won the election but there was no transfer of power because of the skeptics of change; those whose reticence about a new Zimbabwe cost this country the opportunity to set a new political direction.

I want to say there will be space for every one in the new Zimbabwe that I envision. There will be neither vengeance nor retribution against anyone. There is certainly nothing to fear about a free and fair election and the new political and economic order that it will engender in our country.

This country belongs to all of us and there will be neither retribution nor vengeance against any of our citizens. No one should have any reason neither to fear change nor to be suspicious and uncertain of the new dispensation that is now upon us.

Conclusion
Lastly, I urge fellow Zimbabweans to support the efforts for free and fair elections with our assurance that we do not wish to harm or engage in vengeance against anyone. All we seek is a peaceful country poised for growth, development and democracy.

I am confident that collectively we will not fail the nation and the future generations to whom we must bequeath a stable, prosperous and democratic country underpinned by growth and opportunities for all.

The year 2018 presents us with a perfect opportunity to start afresh and lay the foundation for a prosperous country. We must leave our footprints on the sands of history so that in future, we will be able to boldly stare history in the face and say in 2018, we charted a new direction for our country!
Together, we can do it.

I thank you

EU Demands Answers On Dzamara Disappearance

The European Union Delegation, the Heads of Mission of EU Member States present in Harare and the Head of Mission of Switzerland issue the following statement in Zimbabwe:

Today, 9 March 2017, marks two years since the abduction of human rights defender Itai Dzamara. The fate of Mr Dzamara remains unknown and his family continues to fear for his life.

The Heads of Mission of the EU and Switzerland remain deeply concerned at the lack of progress in this case and call once again on the Zimbabwean authorities to ascertain Mr Dzamara’s whereabouts and to ensure that justice is served. To express opinion in a non-violent way is a constitutional right for all Zimbabwean citizens, including for Mr Dzamara. It is the obligation of the authorities to protect the rights of all its citizens.

MDC-T Keresencia Chabuka – Your Backwardness Is Beyond Redemption

By Nomazulu Thata | One could easily forgive this MP for absolute ignorance. In German language they say if ignorance was painful, how many people were we going to see just crying?  We are nearing elections and it is paramount for us in the opposition never to split, condemn each other in front of this monster Zanu PF. I am really forced to respond to this outrage from an MDC-T politician. How does a party MDC-T that has a chance of winning the coming election, if they were free and fare of course. How do you afford to display such ignorance in front of the enemy Zanu PF?

Just yesterday I wrote an article that was almost attacking some ignorance and backwardness displayed by Chigumbu Warikandwa. Both of you Keresencia Chabuka and Chigumbu are targeting children’s rights. You want to violet their rights that are codified in several international conventions. If you were educated you would know them and respect the dignity of children. Again here is a classical example of how backward Africans can be. The world has become a global village with all its dynamics in embracing change in all levels social, economic, technological and many other levels of development, This MP from MDC-T is moving backward, trying to gain currency by riding into traditions that have no room in the present day exponentially developing world.

At best the presidency of MDC-T should recall this woman, she does not deserve a seat in politics of Zimbabwe because she is old-stoneage mentality, and we cannot afford this pulling us backwards all the time. It is wholly in the language of the people to talk in holy-terms about the old traditions that were good to all, stuff and nonsense!  Most progressive countries will never for once want to return to those old traditions of yester-year except some elements in our Zimbabwe societies. It’s just the power they want to possess by reducing vulnerable niche: our children either by bashing them as meting “honour violence” or physically opening children’s legs to see if they are still virgins.

We should remember too that our social media is read by millions of diverse cultures and races out there and they get their confirmation, “did we not tell you that Africans are still primitive?” I do not know any other primitive way of dealing with growing children than to violet the dignity of the growing child, testing her virginity? Virginity and her private parts are her own privacy, and not even the mother has the right to demand to see them if the child did not voluntarily ask her mother for some health assistance.

Advice from Tetes and Babakazis and older sister! My foot! Its stuff and nonsense!

It did not say that any tete is capable of giving good advice to growing girls. The advice girls should get must be from a professional person and not any tete some of which have no academic and professional knowledge to give profitable and professional counselling. This is where we Africans get it very wrong. We accept advice from people who are themselves so vulnerable and in need of help themselves. It’s like going to a Nganga and ask for medicine to get rich. Here is a nganga who is so poor, he is supposed to know the herb that will make another one rich! Just stuff and nonsense! Did he/she get rich with that ntebe on his/her neck? Where ignorance is just bliss its folly to still call yourself you are wise!

We know too that the mere mention of the word “tradition” scares all of us to stiffness, submission and inaction. We have become slaves of traditional beliefs and values that are so backward and outdated. It is those traditions that patriarchal women use to oppress other women termed rebels in the social institutions called family. Those backward traditions are the chains that should be made loose. We are going to break them because those traditions violet women’s rights and children’s rights enshrined in the international conventions. (My services to women and children are my uttermost objects to live for  (Nomazulu Thata).

To bring up a child using the “famous rod” just perpetuates violence in homes. It destroys the child completely. On the other hand to violet the privacy of the child by testing her virginity, what about those children who are abused by those satanic men out there who want virgin cleansing myth- to cure their HIV/AIDS by sleeping with virgins? We also know too that when a girl, it does not matter how young, is sexually abused, it is the fault of the child again who did not sit properly in front of the “decent” man. The “decent man, ” his member has been raised by the “wrong” sitting of the girl; could not help it but sexually demand it right away it did not matter how old the girl-child is? We know too, this silly little MP from MDC-T with a pea-sized-brain, should know that we have babies as old as one year who have been sexually abused by sick men, barbaric men, devilish, Lucifer’s, oh my god please help! Are you going to test their virginity too? Keresencia Chabuka, you are silly, stupid, noisy gong, primitive and a package of nonsense!

Now if a girl was sexually abused and she lost her virginity, how are they going to be categorised. Is this cheap MP politician going tell us these girls misbehaved? Who is going to set up the categories? It’s just stupid, absolute stupid to come out with such suggestions of virginity testing when the rate of abuse on babies, toddlers, children, girls young women is so high, the police cannot even keep correct statistics on how many children are sexually abused every our in Zimbabwe. Previously it was said in Zimbabwe, every 90 minutes a baby, girl or a toddler is sexually abused, you Keresencia Chibaku are talking about virginity testing, are you aware of these statistics at all? Do you know how many thousands little girls suffer silently in homes because they cannot come out and tell it that they are systematically abused in those “comfortable and safe homes?” The gray area is a lot bigger than police statistics by the way.

If you want our confidence dear MDC-T, please make sure you recall this MP Keresencia Chabuka because she is letting our vulnerable niche down. She is insulting the dignity of the girl-child. She does not tell us how the boys-children will be tested for virginity at all. This is a woman who thinks patriarchal, she is saying girls and young women are to blame in any sex encounter with men. This MP is saying men are venerated for demanding sex: its good sign if a man wants sex at any age: it becomes bad if a woman of any age wants sex. We cannot accept such a persona as a formidable politician in the coming dispensation.

Not long ago a girl-child of 14 years who was forced into sexual intercourse by some rogue man in Gwanda was forced to wash blankets naked. Is this our civilised nation in 2017? The man who abused the girl went scot free. Shame-proneness and guilt-proneness is internalised on the girl-child all the time at an early age. When you test a girl for her virginity you are meting absolute shame on her: you are creating a social stigma related to sexual identity on the girl-child. Virginity testing reduces the girl-child’s self- esteem; it undermines them as persons and their dignity. Girls do not perform well in schools because of this constant ridicule at homes. Looseness is always redirected to growing girls all the time than growing boys.

This MP should know that testing virginity on growing children is in itself child abuse: the law should perpetrate such practices even from churches. This woman MP is still deep in adoring patriarchal sets up and she wishes all should fall back to the tradition s and culture of yester-year. Why not take the fight on the rate of rape in our nation: rape is inexcusably high. Dear MP of MDC-T can you please be bold for change: this is our theme of International Women’s Day 2017. Please be part of it and be the change we want to see.

‘Queen Bee’ Mujuru Fights $5 Million Lawsuit

National People’s Party leader Joice Mujuru has been slapped with a $5 million lawsuit for allegedly claiming that Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) founding members Rugare Gumbo and Didymus Mutasa solicited for sexual favours from her.

Mutasa and Gumbo have finally approached the High Court demanding $2,5 million each from Mujuru for making the allegation after she spurned an earlier demand to retract her statements.

The two claim Mujuru’s statements, made in Masvingo last month, were deliberately uttered to “defame and injure” their reputation.

According to the two, the occasion which gave rise to the lawsuit was on February 11 this year when Mujuru, while addressing ZimPF structures in Masvingo, uttered remarks concerning Gumbo and Mutasa, saying: “I want you to google, then advise each other. They said Mai Mujuru, we want you to be our queen bee. I was supposed to mate with all men in the party. I was supposed to be their wife.”

Mujuru was meeting the Masvingo structures soon after firing Mutasa, Gumbo and five others from ZimPF on allegations of plotting to unseat her.

In their combined declaration, Gumbo and Mutasa said: “The statement was understood by the addressees and was intended by the defendant (Mujuru) to mean plaintiffs (Gumbo and Mutasa) are unfaithful and immoral in the following respect: That the plaintiffs asked the defendant to engage in sexual activities with multiple men for political benefit; that the plaintiffs asked the defendant to engage in animalistic like orgies; that the plaintiffs asked the defendant to engage in cultic sexual relations for the transfer of leadership skills.”

Gumbo and Mutasa further said after Mujuru made the alleged statement, on February 15 this year, an article was published on the front page of NewsDay under headline entitled Bigwigs wanted to sleep with me: Mujuru, and, above all, they were in possession of Mujuru’s audio recording addressing provincial structures in Masvingo.

“The said words, in the context of the article, are wrongful and defamatory of the plaintiffs in that they were intended to be understood by readers of the newspaper and ZimPF party structures in Masvingo to mean expressly and impliedly, that: The plaintiffs are immoral, lack integrity, are profligate and are debaucherous,” they said.

“The defendant knew fully well at the time she uttered the words that the plaintiffs desired no such activity from her. Her words were malicious and deliberately intended to tarnish the plaintiffs’ reputation and standing.

“As a result of the defendant’s utterances, there have been disturbances in the plaintiffs’ families, and the plaintiffs’ standing as former ministers, statesmen, high public figures and liberation war fighters has been diminished and soiled locally, regionally and internationally.”

Gumbo and Mutasa said notwithstanding their demand for a retraction by February 24, 2017, Mujuru had refused to withdraw the alleged statement.

By yesterday, Mujuru had not yet responded to the summons. – Newsday

UK Suicide Mystery: Mpilo Boss’ Son Is Found Dead

Mpilo Central Hospital Clinical Director Dr Solwayo Ngwenya’s 17-year-old son, Nqobile, has been found dead in the United Kingdom and is suspected to have committed suicide.

Nqobile who was born in Zimbabwe, lived with his mother and sister in Huddersfield.

He was a student at Greenhead College where his friends and coaches described him as a promising football star.

Dr Ngwenya was too distraught to speak yesterday, but a family source said his son was found hanging.

Nqobile’s body was not expected in Bulawayo until at least March 13 following his death on February 27.

Messages of condolences have flooded social media since news of the tragedy emerged. Tributes have been led by his former football club Westend FC in Huddersfield.

Pearce Heggie, who coached him, said:”Nqobile was a lovely lad. He gave 110 percent in every training session and match. He made the other team members smile and happy and always picked their spirits up after they lost a match.

“My thoughts and love go out to the family of Nqobile. You were a lovely lad, you were a pleasure to coach and made everyone smile.

“He will be deeply missed by all.”

Friends took to Twitter and Facebook to pay their tributes.

Fellow student Ali Hashemi said: “To live in the hearts of others is never to die #RIP nqobile #greenheadcollege.”

Cherrie Missin said: “Rest in peace! You was lovely, polite and great to work with could never do enough for you x.:

Rifat Nisa posted: “He was studying with my son at Greenhead College and a good intelligent lad. Very, very sad news.”

“So hard to know what to say, really puts everything into perspective. You’ll always be in our hearts bro, never forgotten. RIP Nqobile,” another message from a friend read. – State Media

DISTURBING PICTURES: President Mugabe’s Bodily Health

You can botox your face and look all handsomely youthful to the world, but you can’t botox the rest of your body, shame! – Zimbabweans Tuesday woke up to disturbing images of President Robert Mugabe.

Mugabe for whom the state media regularly doctors facial pictures, has been left exposed by the same as state cameras revealed the rest.

The 93 year old President was last year found to have undergone some intensive cosmetic surgery. The Tendai Biti led party revealed Mugabe in January travels to the far east to obtain a “smoothing of his facial wrinkles.”

‘…In fact Mugabe over the Christmas holidays Mugabe received an expensive

Botox operation to give temporary upliftment to his face by smoothing his facial wrinkles and improving his appearance so that he appears younger and capable of running the country when he clearly can no longer tell his left hand from the right…’

medical operation?...Robert Mugabe
medical operation?…Robert Mugabe

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) says President Robert Mugabe received an expensive operation during the Christmas holidays.

Mugabe no longer fit to govern

President Robert Mugabe returned home last Friday and despite the usual noises from the state media that he was physically fit, he is showing clear signs that he was a man who is no longer fit to govern the country.

On his return, Mugabe flew into a storm where civil servants are not receiving their salaries. It is also not clear when the government will be able to meet its commitment and obligations of paying civil servants their annual bonuses and whether it will be able to meet its monthly pay dates.

Major government hospitals and clinics have run out of essential drugs including ordinary Paracetamol painkillers, while critical surgical operations are being carried out by junior doctors as the bulk of senior doctors cannot work for the pittances that the government is offering.

While the health sector is all but paralyzed, there is a deadly typhoid outbreak which has hit Harare and will certainly spread to other towns and will leave a trail of destruction on its wake.

This outbreak shows the decay of infrastructure and systems in the country over the last 37 years and is an indictment on Mugabe.

In a time of such economic turbulence and enormous challenges such as the unfolding devastating drought, Mugabe cannot act as if it’s business as usual while the country is on the brink and burning. Yet it is shocking that his response to this calamity has been casual and routine as if all is well.

The most hit by Mugabe and his government’s non-performance are children of the poor who are going to schools where there are no study materials while the teachers are now engaged in informal trade during schools hours in order to supplement for their paltry salaries.

It is also the same poor people who seek medical treatment in dysfunctional hospitals while Mugabe and his cronies fly to Singapore, India and Dubai to get world class treatment.

In fact Mugabe over the Christmas holidays Mugabe received an expensive Botox operation to give temporary upliftment to his face by smoothing his facial wrinkles and improving his appearance so that he appears younger and capable of running the country when he clearly can no longer tell his left hand from the right.

The economy has been in a free fall with most companies failing to reopen due to tough economic and unproductive conditions thereby throwing thousands of workers into to the streets.

It is clear that the falling economy and factional fights in Zanu PF have led to senior government officials to engage in corrupt activities and have seen this period as their last chance to loot the country’s natural resources resulting in the economy disintegrating under the weight of massive corruption by a coterie of Mugabe bootlickers and zealots.

The same heartless Mugabe has forced thousands of families out of their homes after their homes were demolished with the latest being the residents of Nyikavanhu Housing Cooperative who had had their homes demolished by the Harare City Council on the orders of Mugabe who said the houses were an eyesore to international visitors coming into Zimbabwe.

The failures of Mugabe in a nation where over 91% of the population are unemployed and vendors are endless and is a clear signal that he is no longer capable of leading Zimbabwe and there sufficient grounds for impeachment as set out section 97 of the Constitution of the country. The challenge remains that none of ZANU PF’s cowardly and corrupt parliamentarians would dare move such a motion as they have deified Mugabe.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) therefore maintains that the responsibility to end Mugabe’s criminal rule falls on those who are on the receiving end, the ordinary people. It is now time for Zimbabweans to unite and pour into the streets to demand that Mugabe and his failed regime step aside to allow space for Zimbabwe to move forward.

Mugabe and his cronies have declared themselves enemies of the people by impoverishing millions of Zimbabweans and thus the public must take corrective measures against them.

The (PDP) further hold that Zimbabwe needs a National Transitional Authority (NTA) to manage the transition from Mugabe’s criminal rule into another Zimbabwe. It is therefore imperative that dialogue amongst the key democratic opposition forces is crucial so as to form a coalition that can push ZANU PF out of power before the nation slides into complete chaos.

Gwanda Road Accident: HOW IT ALL HAPPENED

Good morning Editor.
I have been catching up on your report on the accident overnight on the Gwanda road.
I live nearby the scene and heard the accident happen just before going to bed. There were three loud bangs and my bed-frame shuddered on the shock. I knew immediately that a notoriously massive pothole that lies in the middle of the bridge on the main Gwanda highway had finally claimed a victim.
The vehicle that hit the pothole must have been going at a great speed owing to the severity of the impact.
Police sirens were heard within half an hour I estimate.
We have for days been commenting on this pothole – we went to town on Tuesday and hit the pothole as it was submerged by water. Our vehicle came to a complete standstill, it is massive!
We tried calling the Bulawayo City Council on Wednesday to notify them of the dangers here as the bridge itself is liable to collapse owing to its deteriorating state. However, we were unable to get in touch with anyone at BCC with a phone call. Their switch board is not working.
Maintenance on this important highway into Bulawayo appears to have come to a standstill and unfortunately we can expect many more such incidents as unwary drivers hit these potholes on this stretch of road – particularly if members of the public are unable to communicate such significant issues with Council.

Chiyangwa Fights CAF

Zimbabwe FA chairman Phillip Chiyangwa has escalated his war of words with the Confederation of African Football (Caf) by threatening legal action against both its president and secretary general.

Chiyangwa is unhappy that a birthday party he hosted in Harare on 23 February has become a matter to be discussed by Caf’s Executive Committee next week.

Caf had warned Chiywanga that hosting the gathering would be seen as “an attempt to destabilise” the body.

“They shouldn’t dare me with silly innuendos – making nefarious allegations,” Chiyangwa told BBC Sport. “My legal team is preparing to go into battle against President Issa Hayatou and Secretary General Hicham El Amrani.”

“If necessary following any deliberations that are prejudicial to my interests and standing, I will be taking legal recourse to the extent that Hayatou and El Amrani will be held personally liable for defamation.”

The Executive Committee meets in Ethiopia on Tuesday 14 March, two days ahead of a presidential election which pits Hayatou against his sole challenger Ahmad, who is head of Madagascar’s FA.

Chiyangwa is campaign manager for the bid by Ahmad (who uses only one name) to unseat the Cameroonian, who is the longest-serving president in Caf history after assuming office in 1988.

This conflict of interest provides the backdrop for the recent exchanges between the two parties.

Chiyangwa claims his party last month was both to celebrate his election as president of the southern African football region Cosafa in December as well as his birthday in early February.

However, he was advised on 11 February that the event would breach Caf guidelines since it would include not only presidents of Cosafa member associations but also those outside the region.

“The president of Caf, Issa Hayatou, directs me to send you this,” began the letter written by Morocco’s El Amrani.

“While it would be acceptable to convene a meeting of the leaders of your zonal union, convening a meeting with representatives of many member associations outside Cosafa zone is deemed to represent an attempt to destabilise Caf.”

Chiyangwa says the meeting was two-fold.

On 23 February, he hosted a party that was ultimately attended by seven FA presidents from the Cosafa zone as well as five others from across the continent (Djibouti, Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia and Nigeria).

Fifa President Gianni Infantino was also in attendance.

On the day of the party, Caf contested Chiyangwa’s claim that the gathering was an ‘informal’ meeting.

The Cairo-based organisation queried why Chiyangwa used a personal letterhead to invite the Zambian FA president to a celebration of both his Cosafa election and birthday, yet a Cosafa letterhead was used to invite Mali’s FA president to just a celebration of his election.

In view of the different letterheads used and the established work visit of the Fifa President, it does not seem that it is an ‘informal’ meeting,” Caf wrote on 23 February.

“For your information, this matter will be tabled on the agenda of the upcoming meeting of the Caf Executive Committee.”

Chiyangwa says these were draft letters.

On 24 February, the day after the party, Infantino met with both Zimbabwe football officials and the country’s sports minister – whereupon a development programme for the country’s football was among the matters discussed.

“The debate on what the purpose of the meeting was intended to achieve is now moot as the reality of what eventually transpired bears full testimony to the veracity of my actions,” says Chiyangwa.

Next week’s election is seen as the tightest that Hayatou has faced.

During his three decades in charge, the 70-year-old has been challenged only twice and he registered landslide victories on both occasions.

In 2000, he beat off the challenge from Angola’s Armando Machado (by 47 votes to 4) before also heavily defeating Ismail Bhamjee of Botswana four years later (46-6).

Whoever wins the 16 March election will win a four-year term as president of Caf, which is also celebrating the 60th anniversary of its founding next week. – BBC

Mugabe Charms War Vets

GOVERNMENT might soon be forced to grab farms as the War Veterans ministry has initiated a one-week exercise calling on former freedom fighters to submit applications for land in their provinces of choice.

The exercise, which began yesterday ending next Thursday, is targeting ex-combatants who have never been allocated land since the agrarian reform programme in 2000, that saw white commercial farmers being forced off land.

This came at a time when war veterans are complaining of unfair land distribution and threats of eviction by well-connected government officials. In Masvingo, a group of war veterans has since appealed to President Robert Mugabe to stop their imminent eviction from Mujingwe Wildlife Conservancy.

In a notice yesterday, the Ministry of Welfare Services for War Veterans noted the ongoing land disputes involving ex-combatants, and went further to call on other liberation war freedom fighters to submit applications of interest to be allocated land.

“War veterans of the liberation struggle who have not yet been allocated land may also submit
applications through the provincial field officers, indicating their preferred province,” the notice reads.

The ministry urged war veterans facing eviction to approach it for assistance to fend off the eviction threats. The ex-combatants last year met Mugabe complaining about their “systematic” evictions “from their pieces of land allocated to them under the land reform programme”.

“Due to the above circumstances, the veterans of the liberation struggle have pleaded with His Excellency to intervene at the highest level to stop the Ministry of Lands and Rural Resettlements or any other authorities involved in these dastardly activities from countenancing or approving such dispossessions and displacements.

“It is, therefore, in this light that the Ministry of Welfare Services for War Veterans, War Collaborators, Former Political Detainees and Restrictees calls upon all affected veterans of the liberation struggle to submit the following information [names, copy of offer letter and withdrawal letter and evidence of eviction threats] urgently to our nearest provincial field offices,” the ministry added.

War Veterans minister Tshinga Dube confirmed the notice was from his ministry.

Mugabe always talks of the important role played by war veterans during the armed struggle, but only a few well-connected ones have benefited from government largesse as thousands have to make do with measly monthly allowances.

In 1997, war veterans were given Z$50 000 as gratuity for their participation in the armed struggle, and they are demanding for government to look into their welfare to satisfy angry ex-combatants. – Newsday

Zanu PF Youths And Women Clash Over Land

There was drama yesterday at Worchestershire Farm, about 12km outside Gweru off the Harare highway, when Zanu PF activists blocked party youths who had come for the unveiling of residential stands at the piece of land.

Some of the women protested by lying on the ground blocking two buses carrying the youths, who are beneficiaries of the Zanu PF Midlands Youths Worchestershire Housing Project.

Zanu PF intends to dish out 14 500 residential and commercial stands to youths at the piece of land where ruling party members, including women, were resettled a few years ago.

Midlands Provincial Affairs minister Jason Machaya was unreachable yesterday.

But Zanu PF provincial youth chairperson Prosper Machando dismissed reports of the clash, saying it was just “a slight misunderstanding” with the resettled people, which was quickly resolved.

“Obviously, when someone suddenly comes to your house, you are bound to raise your head,” Machando said.

“But when we arrived with the minister (Machaya) and explained the purpose of our visit, they (resettled farmers) quickly understood and a liaison committee was formed between the youths and the resettled farmers.”

However, the resettled farmers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said a storm was brewing as they felt the youths had invaded the land they had been allocated by Zanu PF. – Newsday

I Was Mugabe’s Natural Successor – Mujuru

Ray Nkosi | There is no love lost between former Vice President Joice Mujuru and her political nemesis Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mujuru and Mnangagwa have fought over the years to succeed President Robert Mugabe, the latter who in a typical Machiavellian fashion has played one against the other.

For Mujuru the wound of expulsion from Zanu PF is still fresh and hurting after she told an international audience that she was President Mugabe’s natural successor, a position Mnangagwa also claims to have.

Mujuru was fired from Zanu-PF in 2014 together with other senior leaders, on account of gross incompetence and plotting to unseat President Mugabe unconstitutionally.

In her London address Mujuru said: “When it became apparent that I was the clear successor to President Robert Mugabe, men seemed not ready for that, although the nation had fully endorsed my candidature.

“What is sad in most of these cases of persecution and abuse of women is that men find willing accomplices in some of our own fellow women. This was the case in Zimbabwe where those at the forefront of side-lining me were fellow women.”

State media reports that war veteran leader and Manicaland provincial Minister of State Mandi Chimene said: “There is nothing like natural and clear successor in Zanu-PF.

All leaders come from the people and even President Mugabe came from the people. If she thinks it was natural as she wants people to believe, why was she canvassing people to be aligned to her?

“I think she also mistook herself to be the biblical Daniel who was thrown in a den of lions or Jonah who was swallowed by the fish and only to be saved by God. Tell her that the fish that swallowed her is now digesting her instead of taking her to Nineveh.

“She is day dreaming and I shudder to think what was going to happen if she was to become President when she is now warming up to the country’s enemies like this.”

Political analyst Mr Goodwine Mureriwa said the former Vice President should be grateful for the positions she attained both in the party and Government while she was still a member of the ruling party.

“Joice was way beyond number 20 in the Zanu-PF hierarchy and there were other senior and more competent women who could have occupied the Vice Presidency position ahead of her in the party and I think she is one person who should thank President Mugabe for his immeasurable benevolence,” he said.

“She is also a beneficiary of the amendment made to the Zanu-PF constitution to have a woman Vice President in 2004 and she misled herself when President Mugabe said “you should aim higher”. She interpreted that to mean that she was being groomed to be the successor, which was not the case.

“She then began to mobilise party structures against President Mugabe – an exercise which then back fired. Her London speech is a desperate statement propelled by greedy ambitions and if she thinks that Zimbabweans really accepted her as their leader, let her prove herself at the ballot box.

“I think enough test regarding her worth came during the Bikita West by-election, which saw her coiling back in her shell.”

Mr Mureriwa said Dr Mujuru was now a desperate politician, especially after she broke ranks with founding members of her political project. – State Media

ADULTERY DRAMA: Man Bombs Neighbour’s House with Wife’s Underwear

Terrence Mawawa, Mwenezi| An estranged man dumped his wife’s suitcase at his neighbour’s homestead claiming the latter had an affair with his wife.

Moses Sirove(35), of Maparara Village under Chief Chitanga, Mwenezi, assaulted his neighbour’s wife after she had denied him permission to drop his wife’s clothes (including her underwear) claiming she had an affair with the woman’s husband.

Sirove appeared before Magistrate Honest Musiiwa facing assault charges.

Facts were that Sirove rode his bicycle to his neighbour’s homestead and found Letween Kwerengwe carrying out her domestic chores.

He then told Kwerengwe-his neighbour’s wife he wanted to leave his wife’s suitcase because she had an affair with her husband.

Kwengwere then refused to let Sirove dump the suitcase. This incensed Sirove who assaulted Kwengwere with clenched fists. He also slapped Kwengwere.

“On February 17,2017, Kwengwere arrived at his neighbour’s homestead around 4pm and approached Kwengwere while carrying the suitcase. The accused person told the complainant he had come to drop his wife’s suitcase at the homestead. When the complainant opposed the accused’s decision, he became violent and assaulted her,” the court heard.

Kwengwere sustained facial injuries after the assault and she was taken to hospital for treatment.

The case was reported to the police leading to Sirove’s arrest.

Magistrate Musiiwa convicted Sirove of assault and fined him $30 or 15 days in prison.

ANOTHER HORROR ACCIDENT: 16 Mourners Crushed to Death in Car Crash

The Bulawayo community was this morning shocked to wake up to news that 16 people could have been crushed to death in a mini bus while taking the body of a deceased relative outside the city.

The sixteen, together with the relative’s corpse, were crushed under a heavy vehicle when the driver of the oncoming beast hit a pothole and lost control of the huge truck resulting in the truck overturning and landing on the mini bus which was travelling from the opposite direction.

At the time of writing details of the accident were still sketchy, but the Bulawayo Gwanda road just after the National University of Science and Technology is currently closed off as police and emergency services crews descend onto the accident site.

More details will be made available as they unfold. – ZimEye

Mugabe Death Prophet Still In Jail

Kariba pastor Phillip Mugadza, who prophesied that President Mugabe will die in October, will stand trial on March 30. Mugadza (46), who is in custody, yesterday appeared before Ms Barbara Chimboza who remanded him to his trial date after the prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa notified the court that the docket was now complete.

He is facing charges of causing offence to persons of a particular race, religion, tribe, colour, creed as defined in Section 42 (2) of the Criminal Law and Codification Act (Chapter 9:23).
Mugadza has been in custody since his arrest in January. His bid for freedom recently hit a brick wall after his application for refusal of further remand was dismissed by Ms Chimboza.

In his application then, Mugadza, through his lawyers Messrs Obey Shava and Gift Mutisi, accused the State of infringing on his constitutional rights.

Said Mr Shava: “When we appeared in court on January 19, we were told that investigations were complete and evidence had been compiled for trial purposes.

This court even made a determination to deny the accused person bail based on those submissions.

“It is surprising that the same State is now saying it is not ready for trial. This has an effect of infringing on the accused person’s right to a fair trial within a reasonable period of time. The same reasons being given by the State in its application for postponement today are the same reasons they have been proffering since proceedings commenced.”

The prosecution opposed the application and sought a further postponement of the matter.
The court then gave the State another chance to put its house in order and furnish Mugadza with his trial date which they did yesterday.

It is alleged that on January 12, Mugadza was interviewed by The Zimbabwe Mail website and said President Mugabe was to die in October according to his prophecy.

In the interview, Mugadza caused an offence and insulted the Christian religion and African tradition. – State Media

Mangudya Spends $75 Million On Women

Women have received a major boost from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe which has put in place initiatives that will see them receiving more than $75 million for various projects. This was said during the International Women’s Day celebrations hosted by the Ministry of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development and attended by various stakeholders that included the United Nations community, as well as Government officials in Harare yesterday.

Deputy Reserve Bank Governor, Dr Charity Lindiwe Dhliwayo, who was guest of honour, said the apex bank established initiatives which included the Women Empowerment Fund, small holder agriculture production fund, a horticulture facility, and a gold development facility for small scale gold miners and these will be available through Fidelity Printers and Refiners, a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank.

The money allocated to the gold development facility was increased from $20 million to $40 million because of the success registered thus far.

The initiatives were allocated $15 million, $10 million, $10 million and $40 million respectively and the fund disbursements modalities are being finalised through the respective stakeholders across the country.

“The initiatives aim at catering for the individual needs of the marginalised groups, particularly women, who face challenges in accessing financial services due to lack of or inadequate acceptable collateral,” said Dr Dhliwayo.

“The Reserve Bank will also establish a collateral registry which will enable women to use their movable assets like sewing machines as collateral.”

The RBZ is also working on reducing the risks associated with informality in terms of business and to also incorporate all in developmental processes, said Dr Dhliwayo.

She said the efforts would enhance the financial inclusion of women and will contribute towards the achievement of Zim-Asset objectives. In addition to the women’s desks availed in eight banks so far, the soon-to-be-launched Women’s Bank will assist women to prosper in the business arena.

Minister of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development Cde Nyasha Chikwinya thanked the RBZ for availing the $15 million Women Empowerment Fund in the 2017 Monetary Policy and said it will improve efforts in the total empowerment of women.

She urged banks managing the facility to work closely with her ministry in ensuring that deserving cases benefited. The focus for this year’s International Women’s Day was “Women in the changing world of work”, and running under the international campaign theme #BeBoldForChange.

The national theme for this year was “The woman we want is Bankable, Beautiful, Business-minded, Brainy, Bold, Blessed and Balanced.” – State Media

BREAKTHROUGH: Caps United Link Rainbow Airlines

Caps United supporters

HARARE giants CAPS United have scored another first by entering into a partnership with new local airline, Rainbow Airlines, to fly the team on their local and international assignments on cost-effective deals. The pact is set to come into motion this Sunday when the Harare giants travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo on a charter flight, courtesy of their new partners.

CAPS United chief executive Cuthbert Chitima confirmed the charter plane is in place. He said the CAPS United delegation is expected to leave around 7am Sunday morning on a 90-minute flight and then return after the match in the evening.

Chitima, who described the arrangement as convenient and cost-effective compared to the commercial flights, was happy with the new initiative. Rainbow Airlines marketing executive Dora Manyika said they are looking to have lasting relations with CAPS United and would also be open to negotiations from the wider sporting fraternity for affordable deals to fly teams and athletes.

“We were approached by CAPS United a few weeks ago to find a cost-effective way of getting them to the DRC and back.

“Most of you would know that travelling in Africa is one of the most difficult things to do because you have to go backwards to go forward or go past the destination where you are going in order for you to land where you need to go.

“So the route to DRC from Zimbabwe is either through South Africa or you have to go through Kenya.

“But we as Rainbow Airlines have given the team the opportunity to travel directly from Zimbabwe straight to DRC.

“They play their match and we bring them back home that evening So we are very excited to be partnering with sport in Zimbabwe and we look forward to work with CAPS United as they go forward as they go all over the continent and locally as well,” said Manyika.

Chitima said they are expecting a safe trip to the DRC after getting assurances from the Confederation of African Football that the environment was conducive as the political tensions that flared up in recent months had died down.

“We have been given assurance that all is in order and there is no need for us to fear anything. It’s also good for us that we will not be staying there. It’s just going in and out. So as far as security issues are concerned we have been assured that all is well from CAF,” said Chitima. – state media

Robbers Kill Gold Panner

A gold panner from Kwekwe died after he was allegedly attacked by six robbers who made off with gold ore which he had extracted illegally from a mine in the town.

Jackson Matambo was killed at Jojo Mine compound on Monday. One person has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Acting Midlands Provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende confirmed the incident.

“I can confirm the death of a male adult who was stabbed to death by suspected armed robbers at Jojo Mine Compound in Kwekwe on March 6,” said Asst Insp Mukwende.

She said on the fateful day, Matambo and his colleagues extracted gold ore from Jojo Mine and loaded it into a pickup truck at around 1AM.

Asst Insp Mukwende said soon after loading the gold ore, another vehicle with six men armed with swords and machetes arrived at the mine.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the man had extracted gold ore illegally from the mine and loaded it into a vehicle together with his friends when the armed robbers pounced on them,” she said.

“The suspected armed robbers attacked Matambo and his colleagues with the weapons. Matambo was stabbed several times and fell to the ground while his colleagues managed to escape and sought assistance from the mining compound”.

Asst Insp Mukwende said when Matambo’s colleagues returned, they found him lying on the ground in a pool of blood and rushed him to Kwekwe District Hospital.

She said Matambo was pronounced dead on arrival at the health institution.

“Police attended the scene leading to the arrest of one suspect Freedom Ncube of Mbizo 5 Kwekwe who is assisting police with investigations. We have launched a manhunt for the other five suspects,” said Asst Insp  Mukwende.

She appealed to members of the public to respect human life and desist from using violence as a way of solving disputes. – State Media

Teachers Left to Starve as Soldiers Get Bonuses

A day after President Robert Mugabe’s stone-broke government reached a compromise with angry civil servants over their outstanding 2016 bonuses, the State is facing a fresh headache after rural teachers threatened to strike over the decision to pay soldiers their 13th cheque ahead of other government workers.

In the bonus agreement reached on Monday, which ended months of bickering between the two parties, Treasury will somehow have to find a staggering $180 million to pay government workers their 13th cheques.

The bonus payments will be staggered, with members of the defence forces and those in the health sector receiving their dues first — at the end of April — while the police and prisons officials will be given theirs in May.

Long-suffering teachers will only be paid their bonuses in June, while the rest of the civil service will get theirs in August, a decision which has not gone down well with Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (Artuz), which is threatening to go on strike to stop the
continuing preferential treatment of the military.

“Unions have collectively refused this structure of payment which prefers to pay security forces first, yet they are also the ones being paid salaries first and are not part of negotiations,” Artuz said yesterday.

It said it had hoped, in the interest of fairness, that the bonus payment dates for the security sector would this time have been pushed to August, while the rest of the civil service would get their bonuses in March and not April.

With the government having unsuccessfully attempted to pay civil servants their outstanding bonuses using residential stands, Artuz dismissed the idea as a non-starter.
“Residential stands must remain as part of non-monetary incentives given that the employer has consistently failed to pay salaries above the poverty datum line, which is currently at $574,” it said.

This comes as the government was last Friday pressured to agree to a raft of demands by public health officials, including doctors and nurses, to end a three-week crippling strike which had been called to protest poor working conditions.

The government has been struggling to meet its key obligations, including paying civil servants on time, leading to several stand-offs with its workers.

On July 6 last year, thousands of civil servants stayed away from work and heeded a call by activist cleric Evan Mawarire to stage a crippling general strike which was described as one of the biggest stay-aways ever held in the country.

Last year, Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa almost lost his job after announcing that the government was going to forego bonus disbursements until this year, a pronouncement that was sharply repudiated by Mugabe a week later.

Despite the government’s depleted coffers, Mugabe said last year that government workers deserved to get their 13th cheque because it was a contractual obligation.

In his last budget statement last December, Chinamasa painted a gloomy outlook for Zimbabwe’s struggling economy, revising downwards the country’s 2016 growth prospects from the previously hoped-for 2,7 percent to a mere 0,6 percent — and thereby pointing to more troubles ahead for long-suffering citizens.

The lawyer-turned-Treasury chief, who has often won industry’s kudos for his pragmatism despite his principals’ destructive policies, was also brave enough to admit openly that the country’s economy was facing “a number of headwinds” that were retarding growth. – Daily News

Drama As Woman (22) Threatens To Kill Much Older Hubby

A 22-YEAR-OLD woman from Cowdray Park suburb in Bulawayo has been sentenced to a wholly suspended three months in prison for sending messages to her ex-husband insulting and threatening to kill him.

Perseverance Ncube was arrested last week on Saturday after a 24-hour spree in which she continuously insulted her ex-husband, Mr Glen Wheeler (56), through WhatsApp messages.

Mr Wheeler, who has an 11 month-old-baby with Ncube, was granted a peace order against her because she is abusive.

According to the protection order, Ncube was ordered not to harass, hurt or insult Mr Wheeler.

Ncube appeared before provincial magistrate Mr Tinashe Tashaya facing a charge of contempt of court.

She pleaded guilty.

Ncube, through her lawyer Mr Bruce Masamvu of Dube-Tichaona and Tsvangirai Legal Practitioners, said she committed the offence out of anger.

“Ncube committed the offence out of provocation. The anger emanated from the complainant’s neglect of their minor child. She got married when she was 21 and Mr Wheeler left her,” said Mr Masamvu.

“May this court consider a wholly suspended sentence or an option of paying a fine when sentencing the accused person. She is a first offender and she knows that crime does not pay,” said the lawyer. Mr Tashaya said the court would not accept any justification for insulting Mr Wheeler.

In passing sentence, the magistrate said he had considered that Ncube is a first offender and she did not waste the court’s precious time as she pleaded guilty. “You are sentenced to a wholly suspended three months in prison without the option to pay a fine. The whole three months is suspended for five years on condition that you do not commit a similar crime,” he said.

Prosecuting, Miss Leanne Nkomo said on March 3, Ncube spent the whole day sending WhatsApp messages insulting her ex-husband.

Later in the evening she sent a message threatening to cause Mr Wheeler’s death thereby violating the protection order. “The complainant did not reply to any of the accused person’s messages. She was demanding money for rentals notwithstanding the fact that the complainant is paying maintenance for the said minor child,” said Miss Nkomo. – State Media

Policeman Beaten Up By Woman

A Plumtree woman has appeared in court for allegedly assaulting a police officer in a bid to evade arrest.

Rejoice Dube (31) of Madubesi Suburb reportedly punched Constable Tsungai Mabingo (28) who is based at the Plumtree Police Station when he tried to arrest her for malicious damage to property.

Dube pleaded guilty to malicious damage to property charges but denied the assault charge when she appeared before Plumtree magistrate, Mr Joshua Manwere.
She was remanded in custody to today for continuation of trial.

Prosecuting, Mrs Rose Sibanda said on March 3 at around 11PM, Dube smashed the windscreen of Mr Java Marovedze’s car during an altercation with her husband.
“On 3 March Mr Marovedze who is a taxi driver received a call from Dube’s husband to come and collect him at his house. When he arrived, Dube’s husband got into the car and this didn’t please her.
“She smashed the windscreen with her fists and damaged it. The value of the damaged property is $50,” she said.

Mrs Sibanda said Mr Marovedze reported the matter at Plumtree Police Station.
She said at around 3AM the following day, Constable Mabingo and Constable Jerifanos Museva arrested Dube.

Mrs Sibanda said Dube punched Cst Mabingo once on the chest and once in the eye in a bid to evade arrest. She said the police officer sustained a swollen eye as a result of the assault.

In her defence, Dube said she did not damage the windscreen on purpose, but fell on it as she was fighting her husband. She said she does not recall assaulting a police officer as she was possessed by a spirit at the time.

However, Mr Marovedze said Dube destroyed his windscreen on purpose.
“Dube’s husband called me in the middle of the night to collect him from his house as I’m a taxi driver. When I arrived he had packed his bags and he put them in my car as he was fighting with his wife.

“He told me he had found used condoms under their matrimonial bed and he wanted to part ways with his wife. Dube wasn’t pleased to see her husband leaving and in protest she smashed the windscreen of my car,” he said.- state media

Dokora In Trouble Again, Dodges Bank Cash Loan

Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Lazarus Dokora has been taken to court over an unpaid bank loan to the tune of $21 000.

CBZ Bank Limited extended a loan to Minister Dokora but he failed to pay back.

The bank is now claiming $21 000 plus interest calculated at the rate of 26 percent per annum.

CBZ Bank is also seeking an order declaring the minister’s bonded immovable property, to be executable.

On May 22 2009, Minister Dokora approached the bank seeking advancement of a loan for medication.

The parties signed an agreement and CBZ Bank agreed to extend the much needed loan.

According to the agreement, funds drawn from the minister’s bank account were meant to finance medical requirements.

The bank, as part of the agreement, would be entitled to charge and debit Minister Dokora’s account with interest.

In the event of minister defaulting payment, the bank was entitled to claim legal costs to pay lawyers engaged to assist in the recovery of the debt.

The bank extended thousands of dollars into the minister’s bank account.

As at January 2017, the minister owed the bank $21 194.

Efforts by the bank to recover the debt were fruitless.

That prompted CBZ Bank to instruct its lawyers Muvingi & Mugadza legal Practitioners to issue summons at the High Court.

Minister Dokora is yet to respond to the claim. – State Media

Armed Robber Weeps In Court

An armed robber yesterday burst into tears in court and begged for mercy after he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Raphael Ngwenya (25) was part of a robbery gang that raided Bulawayo businessman, Mr Rahmn Bhai Patel’s house in Hillside suburb where they looted property and stole $1 000. His accomplices only identified as Bhekani and Shakes are still at large.

The gang of three hit the businessman, who owns DG Patel Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Market at the corner of Robert Mugabe Way and 4th Avenue in the city centre, twice on the head using the butt of a pistol, covered his bleeding head with a sheet, tied his hands and legs with belts before they fled with the loot.

Ngwenya had pleaded not guilty to an armed robbery charge. However, Bulawayo Regional Magistrate Mr Joseph Mabeza convicted him due to overwhelming evidence. Ngwenya wailed before the magistrate during mitigation.

“Your Worship I’m of ill-health. May this court be lenient in passing its sentence. I won’t be able to survive a lengthy prison term. I was recently diagnosed with a TB infection that affects the bones and was prescribed 90 injections. I still haven’t got any medical attention so I don’t know what will happen to me,” he sobbed.

Ngwenya said he was his family’s sole breadwinner and was also looking after his sister’s orphaned children.
“I have two children. I’m also looking after my sister’s orphans. If I go to prison no one will fend for them. This was my first time to involve myself in such a crime. Please forgive me.”

Mr Mabeza suspended three years from Ngwenya’s sentence on condition of good behaviour.

“You shall serve an effective seven years in prison. Robbery is a grave offence that prejudices victims of their hard earned money and property. Some may even suffer severe injuries. The fact that you were part of a gang shows that you participated in pre-planning the offence. You went on to commit this offence in broad day light to show how daring you were,” he said.

Mr Mabeza said Ngwenya and his two accomplices robbed Mr Patel at his house in Hillside suburb. Ngwenya stood guard in the gang’s getaway car — a Toyota Quantum with South African registration while his counterparts only identified as Shakes and Bhekani, went into the house.

Prosecuting, Mr Tinashe Dzipe told the court that on January 15 this year at 10.30AM, Ngwenya drove his friends to Hillside suburb and parked at corner Pembroke and Weir Roads.

“Shakes and Bhekani jumped over a pre-cast wall. They went into the house through a kitchen door that wasn’t locked. Complainant was watching television in the lounge. Shakes approached him and struck him twice on the head with the pistol butt,” said Mr Dzipe.

He said the duo force-marched Mr Patel into all the bedrooms demanding cash.
“Complainant gave them $1 000 cash he had in the house. He also gave them a Seiko wrist watch, Apple I-pad, Samsung S5 and Samsung Note 1 all valued at $1 400. Ngwenya sold two of the stolen phones to a computer technician in the city centre on January 21,” Mr Dzipe said.

Top ZRP Cop Arrested For Garage Heist

A police officer said to be part of an elite arm of the force has been arrested for an armed robbery that occurred at a Total Service Station in Bulawayo last month.

Detectives arrested Amos Hlori (39) a Sergeant in the crack Police Special Tactics (PST) unit stationed at Fairbridge Police Camp yesterday.

He has been implicated as the lone AK47-rifle wielding robber who hit the service station on February 8 and got away with $154 and a cellphone.

Sources close to the case said Hlori was tracked through the cellphone.

“He was based at Plumtree when he committed the robbery. A tracker on the cellphone sold him out. He had travelled from Plumtree specifically to commit the robbery at 3AM, using his service rifle. He returned to his post after accomplishing his mission,” said the source.

Hlori was allegedly captured on Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) as he committed the robbery.

Detectives allegedly recovered the hooded jacket that he wore on the day, at his home.

Faced with overwhelming evidence, the source said, Hlori confessed.

“He admitted everything and is cooperating with detectives in investigations. He may appear in court tomorrow (today),” said the source.

Mr Munyaradzi Mujajati (35), a petrol attendant who was on duty when Hlori allegedly struck, told The Chronicle he came in leg irons for indications yesterday.

The service station’s manager Mr Amos Nhapi (29) said he was happy the armed robber had been arrested.

“Police were every efficient. I’m pleased the culprit has been arrested. They came for indications in the afternoon. Munyaradzi even identified the suspect in a parade,” said Mr Nhapi.

On February 8, Hlori allegedly demanded cash from Mr Mujajati at gun point.

On seeing the rifle, the attendant fled into the manager’s office and locked himself inside.

The suspect, who wore a sweater with a hood that covered his face, ordered him to open the door.

When Mr Mujajati failed to comply, the gunslinger fired a shot through a glass door and the bullet ricocheted off a wall.

Mr Mujajati is said to have pressed the panic button that alerted a Fawcett security team.

As the gunman pointed at the attendant with the rifle, seemingly about to take another shot, Mr Mujajati opened the glass door.

“The robber ordered the attendant to hand over his cellphone and cash. After receiving $154 and cell phone, the robber stepped out, removed his hood and disappeared into the dark. The robbery was captured on CCTV,” said Mr Nhapi then.

Minutes after the alert, the Fawcett team arrived at the station to find the gunman gone.

They called the police who allegedly recovered a spent cartridge and the bullet’s copper jacket at the scene.

National Police Spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi could not be reached for comment  as his mobile phones rang without being answered.

On February 22, police arrested a traffic cop who is suspected to be part of a gang of armed robbers that raided West Service Station in Lupane and was allegedly involved in a shootout with detectives in Bulawayo.

Sergeant Alfred Zvapera (31) of Senga 2 suburb in Gweru allegedly surrendered himself at Nkulumane Police Station a day after the heist.

He allegedly claimed three armed men kidnapped him and his girlfriend in Gokwe and forced them to drive around while the trio committed armed robberies.

Police have declared zero tolerance for corruption within the force.

In January, Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri was quoted saying; “We’ve dismissed some officers for engaging in corruption and there are no sacred cows. Anyone caught will be dismissed from the service.” – State Media

South-Africa Minister Bemoans Xenophobia

Cape Town — The police will fight Afrophobia with everything in their power, Police Minister Nathi Nhleko said on Tuesday.

The ANC was disturbed by Africans attacking fellow Africans, he said during a debate in the National Assembly, intended to promote harmonious existence and respect for all persons.

“We condemn such acts of barbarity with all the contempt they deserve. We regard them as one of the highest and appalling manifestations of mimicking the erstwhile master and doing his dirty ‘divide and rule’ job rooted as it is, in the African’s tragic self-hate syndrome.”

He condemned the hating of “fellow brothers and sisters” from other parts of Africa.

To date, close to 140 people had been arrested on various charges relating to violent attacks, he said. Criminals were hijacking genuine protests.

EFF MP Hlengiwe Hlophe told MPs the party believed no black person could ever be a foreigner in South Africa.

The party put the blame for recent xenophobic attacks squarely at the ANC’s feet and said the party had failed to transform people’s lives.

“There can be no harmonious living together while a tiny minority still own 80 percent of the land. [The] ANC must give our people land [immediately], not tomorrow.”

FF Plus MP Corné Mulder said a no-tolerance message needed to be sent, and it should not be made a race debate.

DA MP Sejamothopo Motau said xenophobia, homophobia, racism, and religious intolerance, bedevilled the nation’s social fabric. “To defeat this scourge, we need to get to the root causes of the problem and eradicate them. Political correctness will not get us anywhere, as experience has shown.”

The ACDP called for all criminals, including illegal immigrants, to be brought to book, and for all brothels to be shut down.

Agang MP Andries Plouamma said the country needed to move away from the premise that foreigners were taking jobs. Foreign governments had been essential to South Africa’s struggle for freedom.

He said people were watching looting on a massive scale in government.

Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba said the vast majority of foreign nationals in the country were documented and chose to be in the country because of its diversity.

“We are not perfect, but we have a lot to be proud of.”

He would not accept the notion that South Africans were xenophobic.

Unscrupulous businesses were taking advantage of South Africans and hired immigrants for below the minimum wage. Businesses should ensure that no less than 60 percent of employees were South African.

“We are clear and unapologetic that the South African government must prioritise its own citizens for employment opportunities,” he said.

Gigaba said it was impossible and not desirable to close South African borders. It was short-sighted to think of immigrants as only taking jobs from South Africans, he said.

Meanwhile, The ANC on Tuesday cautioned its members and alliance partners against calling for members of President Jacob Zuma’s executive to step down.

“The cacophony of noise for a minister to resign from the structures and alliance of the ANC is not helping the situation,” the ANC’s Zizi Kodwa told News24.

He was responding to growing calls for Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini to resign over her handling of the social grants debacle.

“We have had calls from a number of structures of the alliance. It is not their responsibility,” Kodwa said.

“Let’s leave government to deal with the issues being dealt with around Sassa.”

Dlamini has faced severe criticism of failing to act timeously to ensure that social grants would be paid from April 1, when the current, invalid, contract with Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) ends.

In 2014, the Constitutional Court declared the SA Social Security Agency’s (Sassa) contract with CPS invalid, but suspended the order so that a new arrangement could be put in place this year.

Dlamini told Parliament’s standing committee on public accounts on Tuesday that negotiations with CPS were ongoing.

Last week, trade union federation Cosatu said the saga felt less like “administrative bungling” or a “political own goal”, but instead smelt like corruption.

Kodwa said the ANC had held meetings with various ministers and people involved in the matter. The responsibility to appoint ministers rested solely with Zuma. — AFP

Tsvangirai Bungles On MPs

MDC-T continues to count losses over its decision to recall 21 Members of Parliament after it recently lost the right to chair the Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs portfolio committee.

Parliament’s Committee on Standing Rules and Orders chaired by Speaker of the National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda recently announced that Zvimba West MP Ziyambi Ziyambi (Zanu-PF) was now chairperson of that committee, taking over from Harare West MP, Ms Jessie Majome (MDC-T.)

The removal of Ms Majome as chairperson is consistent with the requirement for proportionate representation regarding the way committees are distributed among political parties. “I have to inform  the House that the Committee on Standing Rules and Orders has appointed Honourable Ziyambi Ziyambi as chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs.” said Adv Mudenda. “The appointment is with immediate effect.”

MDC-T chief whip Mr Innocent Gonese yesterday alleged the decision was politically motivated. “This was clearly a political decision where she was targeted for removal,” he said. “The reduction in the members of MDC-T happened in 2015 and no move was made to reduce the number of committees chaired by the MDC-T, yet when the issue arose in late 2016, Zanu-PF insisted that the Justice Committee could no longer be chaired by us and yet at the beginning there was discussion and consensus.

“Further, we were prepared to surrender another committee, but this was rejected and it was evident that a decision had already been made that she could not be allowed to continue.”

But Adv Mudenda dismissed the assertions, saying Ms Majome and her party knew very well the circumstances surrounding the removal.

“Ask her, she knows the reason. I cannot comment on that because they know the reason,” said Adv Mudenda, referring to both Ms Majome and the MDC-T.

The opposition party is also set to get less amount of money from Government under the Political Parties Finance Act this year over its decision to fire legislators, as the money is proportionately shared in accordance with the number of legislators a political party has in Parliament.

Cement Roads For Harare

Two local cement companies have agreed to provide Harare City Council with support and technical assistance in its quest to introduce concrete roads.

Council intends to shift from traditional asphalt roads.

It argues cement roads are durable.

In a report to council’s Environment Management Committee, the city’s works director Engineer Philip Pfukwa said Lafarge Cement and PPC pledged to second engineers and to offer technical expertise.

“Discussions have been held with Lafarge and PPC at both policy and technical levels. They both have expressed willingness to provide technical assistance, support and exposure with their experienced engineers,” reads the report.

“There are a number of locally available equipment for use in handling the operations in cement-concrete roads.”

Eng Pfukwa said the first documented concrete road was made in Ohio, United States of America, in 1891 and one hundred years later sections of the road were still in use.

He said asphalt, a product of the coal cooking process and fractional distillation of crude oil, is wholly imported in Zimbabwe while cement was locally available.

Asphalt has not been locally produced since the decommissioning of coke ovens at Hwange Colliery Company. – state media

Dzamara UK Event

Terrence Mawawa |The commemoration event for missing human rights defender, Itai Dzamara will be held in Manchester, United Kingdom on Saturday.

The event will be facilitated by Zimbabwe Citizens’ Initiative, an organisation concerned about the rampant abuse of human rights. Zimbabwe Citizens’ Initiative’s Farai Nhakaniso (UK Information and Publicity), told ZimEye. com the event would be held to remember Dzamara’s heroics.

Dzamara was abducted by suspected state security agents on March 9 ,2015.He has not been found since that time.

“As citizens we have finally found each other such that we will never let each other down.We will never let another citizen disappear like what happened to Itayi Dzamara. We now know that injustice to one citizen is injustice to all.Today we stand as citizens of Zimbabwe -regardless of political, religious, regional or tribal background. We strongly believe that politicians must be accountable for their actions,” said Nhakaniso.

Zimbabwe Citizens’ Initiative is a converge of Zimbabweans dotted across the globe.
“We have resolved to promote the participation of citizens in democratic processes. We seek to expose gross violation of human rights, political violence and intimidation.

Elections have been characterised by gross irregularities in the past. We are gravely concerned about the recent reports of violence and intimidation ahead of the 2018 polls. Our thrust is to fight for democracy and good governance,” read part of the Zimbabwe Citizens’ Initiative statement.

UK Concerned Mugabe Rigging 2018 Elections

The United Kingdom House of Commons has said it was deeply concerned by lack of electoral reforms in preparations for Zimbabwe’s key 2018 general poll and called on the government to ensure the vote is peaceful, fair and credible.

Responding to a question from Jim Shannon, the shadow Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) spokesperson for Health and Transport on what the UK government was doing to ensure free and fair elections in Zimbabwe, Tobias Ellwood, the under-secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs said Theresa May’s government had adopted a manifesto that included a “commitment to stand up for the rule of law and human rights in Zimbabwe”.

“Ahead of the 2018 elections, it is essential that reforms are made to the Zimbabwean electoral system, including strengthening the independence of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission and removal of unconstitutional legislation which restricts democratic activity and human rights.

“Officials remain in close contact with international partners, including the UN, to co-ordinate support in the run-up to the 2018 elections,” Ellwood said.

British Labour MP Kate Hoey asked Ellwood whether he is “aware of the deteriorating situation in Zimbabwe, economically and politically” and what “role can the British government play over the next six months or so, which will be crucial to the people of Zimbabwe”?

Ellwood said they have engaged the country’s neighbours to keep a watchful eye on the troubled country.

“…who knows what will happen in those six months, but we are working closely with the neighbouring countries to provide the necessary support for the people, who are suffering more than ever before under the current president’s regime,” Ellwood said.

This comes as Zimbabwe opposition parties are up in arms against the Zanu PF government following a contentious decision to go it alone in the securing of the critical biometric voter registration (BVR) kits and the sidelining of the United Nations’ Development Programme (UNDP), which many hoped would ensure transparency in the process.

Academic Pedzisai Ruhanya told the Daily News that the British have a minimal role to play in the country’s internal politics.

“The UK foreign policy is a total failure, especially on Zimbabwe and should not interfere in the affairs of a sovereign country such as Zimbabwe,” he said.

Buttressing Ruhanya’s views, political scientist Maxwell Saungweme said the country was a tinderbox.

“Zanu PF succession fights are a national and regional security early warning threat.  The region must be worried about this. Sadc does have a role to play; mediation where required and dealing with the fallout if there is to be war or strife in Zimbabwe,” he said.

“That (President Robert) Mugabe has no succession plan is a very huge cause for concern. We know what happened in many countries in Africa where long-serving despots had no succession plans. Their reign ends in chaos with bloody civil wars ensuing.  This is a reality we should fear in Zimbabwe,” Saungweme said.

Since last year, there have been allegations that the British are working on sprucing up the image of Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, one of the leading contenders to succeed the ailing Mugabe, who turned 93 last month, but the Brits have rejected the accusations.

Asked specifically on what will happen in the next months given war veterans and other Zanu PF activists assumed position that Mugabe has to hand over power sooner rather than later, Ruhanya said it was clear the centre can no longer hold.

“Mugabe is no longer as powerful as he used to be. It is clear that there is a power vacuum, the current Mugabe is not the one of the 1990s, and while he has the legal power he has lost control of the vital State organs.

“While I said the UK cannot interfere in a sovereign country, Sadc has a role to play because Zimbabwe is signatory to its statutes on good governance. Sadc is the only body that can be listened to by Zanu PF,” said Ruhanya. – Daily News

UK Zim Man Charged With Child Neglect

A man has appeared in court to deny neglecting his three children after a car crash in Bradford.

Blyth Mkonya, 35, of Woodsley Fold, Thornton, pleaded not guilty to three charges of neglect when he appeared at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The charges relate to a car crash that happened on Leeds Road, Bradford, at about 12.15am on Monday.

The court heard that the three youngsters involved were Mkonya’s children, aged 12 years, five years, and nine months.

Prosecutor Dan Penman said: “It was a single incident of short-term neglect.”

Mkonya also denied a charge of causing an accident, damaging another vehicle, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

He also denied charges of driving without insurance and driving while disqualified.

Mkonya pleaded guilty to failing to provide a breath specimen for analysis.

Mr Penman said that Mkonya told police after his arrest that someone else was driving the car.

Shazad Dad, defending, said CCTV from businesses near the scene of the crash would prove whether or not Mkonya was driving.

Mr Dad added that the neglect charges were “questionable”.

“His only sin is he may not have co-operated with the police,” said Mr Dad. “Which he may believe he had good reason to do so.”

Firefighters from Bradford station were on their way back to base from another incident when they came across the crash, which involved a Nissan Qashqai and a parked Mercedes Sprinter van.

Crews treated the three children for minor injuries before they were taken to hospital by ambulance.

Mkonya, who appeared in the dock wearing a red jacket, a light grey top and light grey jogging bottoms, works at a warehouse in Halifax and studies part-time at university in Sheffield, the court heard.

He will stand trial on May 22 at the magistrates’ court. Mkonya was released on conditional bail to reside at Woodsley Fold in Thornton, and to adhere to a 7pm to 7am curfew. – Thetelegraphandargus

Take A Stand Against Mugabe – Women Told

The MDC Women Assembly on this International Day of Women calls upon all women of Zimbabwe to take a stand in response to the hardships and misery inflicted on citizens by the ruthless ZANU PF government by registering to vote in preparation for the 2018 general elections.

By registering to vote women have the power to change the tide in Zimbabwean politics and are better armed to fight for women’s rights and equality.

We are aware that ZANU PF is trying to ensure that it is mostly its members who are registered, and as the MDCWA we are advising women to go and register in their numbers and not fall into the voter apathy trap as it will work to the advantage of the failed ZANU PF government. We are encouraging young women in particular between the ages of 18-29 years to take part in the exercise being conducted by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission and register to vote under the biometric voter registration system.

It is clear that the challenges we are facing as a nation demand that young women step up and raise their voice and demand change on issues that matter to them. The next election is one good opportunity to overwhelmingly vote out ZANU PF and leave it in the dustbins of history where it belongs.

The current regime is out of touch with the needs of young women, as evidenced by an unemployment rate that has plummeted to above 95 percent, placing women at a major disadvantage at all levels of society. Due to the desperate situation, the majority of young women have been forced to drop out of school and engage in prostitution and left at the risk of contracting HIV. Child marriages are now seen as the only route out of poverty by most rural families. We are losing scores of women every single day to cervical and breast cancer because this government has completely failed to provide a decent health care system. Women’s voices can change this disastrous course if they register to vote.

The theme for this year’s celebrations; Be bold for Change, comes against the backdrop of arrests, harassment and police brutality unleashed on the brave women who have stood up to protest against the unjust practices of the regime. Registering to vote is the first step for young women to determine the course of their future.

On this momentous occasion of celebrating women’s political and social achievements, we are challenging the generality of Zimbabwean women to reflect on the wisdom of J.F Kennedy’s words, ‘Ask not what the country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” While we acknowledge the strides made towards increasing the number of women seats in parliament, statistics show that a gender gap still persists in this country and women are still not represented adequately in both business and politics. As a result a majority of women’s issues still get ignored. The political space remains a ripe space for women to get a say in their governance so as to be better positioned to adequately address women’s issues.

Be Wary Of Diaspora “Mashohori” Contesting Flawed Elections Only To Fly Out Leaving Others To Suffer

Patrick Guramatunhu | There are many Zimbabweans in the diaspora who are genuinely interested in seeking meaningful democratic change in Zimbabwe but we must be wary of the few whose only interest is and has always been to feather their own nest. Zimbabwe political discourse is now being dominated by these diaspora political opportunists, the tourist politicians or “Mashohori” (migrant stock), as my Auntie calls them; mudding the political water and confusing the nation.

The blatant vote rigging by Zanu PF has reached the point where boycotting elections is the obvious and logical thing to do as Senator David Coltart readily acknowledged.

“The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious – withdraw from the elections,” stated Senator Coltart in his book.

“The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”

The question then arise: why was this issue not even discussed in the opposition camp?

The pressure to contest the flawed elections regardless came from Mashohori would were converging from all corners of the world ready to muscle in and win a seat on the country’s infamous gravy train. They were not interested in whether the elections were rigged or not as long as they get a seat on the gravy train.

At least 500 Mashohori contested in the various political party primaries and a number went on to contest in the 2013 elections. Those who failed to make it past the primary, flew back to Europe, America or wherever they had come from. As we know the election was rigged and many opposition candidates failed to secure a gravy train seat; triggering yet another wave of diaspora migration to hide and leak their wounds and leaving the local people to deal with the tragic consequences of the rigged elections.

The migrant stock visit Zimbabwe during the rainy season to feed on the locust, lizards or whatever other mussels it can get. At the end of the season they fly back to Europe where they nest and bring up their young leaving the local birds to tough it out during the dry season.

Zimbabwe’s electoral season has gone full cycle and Mashohori are back. Zimbabwe has over 50 registered political parties and, needless to say, many of them have a large contingent of diaspora Zimbabweans, keen to contest the elections regardless of all the electoral flaws. They have formed their own parties because they know their parachute candidate image stinks! By forming their own briefcase parties, they know the competition for seats is not so great.

“Election fever has caught on. There is a tangible expectation in the air for 2018 elections and it appears reforms have all been but forgotten. Rush to register! Says the endless banners,” wrote Vince Musewe in one of his rare insightful observation.

“Register with who and for what is my question.

“If we think numbers will overwhelm Zanu-PF while they are in control of the machinery we must be both stupid and naive. The only election that can be fair is one that is independently administered or one where we the people are involved. ZEC will never deliver a zanupf defeat.

“I will say it again and again. Zanu-PF are poised to win their elections supported by the army the police the cio and the ZEC.”

What Musewe is doing is force those in the opposition camp especially Mashohori to debate the serious issue of vote rigging. What makes the refusal by the diaspora opportunists to discuss vote rigging particularly obnoxious is that many of them are living in countries like USA, Australia and Western Europe, with well establish tradition of holding free and fair elections. These Zimbabweans know Zimbabwe’s elections are but a mockery of what democratic elections should be. These diaspora vultures are pretending not to know what constitute free and fair elections just to win the few seats Zanu PF gives away!

To call these diaspora political opportunists mashohori is being generous, stock perform a useful service to the local people by helping to keep the locust population, that would otherwise destroy the crops, down. The diaspora politicians who continue to contest the flawed elections are vultures who kill and eat the farm animals especially the young and sick ones.

“When they (Zanu PF) win we shall all be in mourning once more and those encouraging a rush to unreformed elections will keep quiet or go into hiding,” concluded Musewe.

We know exactly where many of them are hiding too, back to their diaspora home!

It is incumbent on all thinking Zimbabweans to demand the implementation of all the democratic reforms so we can have free, fair and credible election. Until we hold free and fair elections, this country will never ever get out of the hell-hole President Mugabe and his Zanu PF thugs have dragged us into. Whilst still at it, we must hold to account the opposition politicians, especially mashohori, who continue to contest the flawed elections giving illegal Zanu PF regime the legitimacy it does not deserve!

Chihuri Blocks Dzamara March

Police have blocked a march called to commemorate the disappearance of anti-President Robert Mugabe activist Itai Dzamara scheduled to be held in Harare’s central business district (CBD) tomorrow.

Itai’s younger brother, Patson, told journalists yesterday that the police advised them to hold the commemoration at Freedom Square — an open space way outside the CBD.

“They (police) said the situation in the CBD is volatile,” he said.
“We were planning to start our march at Africa Unity Square but the move by the police will not deter us. We are going to have the commemoration at Freedom Square,” Patson said.
Itai — who became popular after staging one-man anti-Mugabe protests dubbed “Occupy Africa Unity Square” — mysteriously disappeared in March 2015 and his unknown whereabouts reach exactly two years tomorrow.

The missing activist’s family accuses Mugabe’s government of being involved in his disappearance, with commissioned police investigations pointing to nothing so far.
In May last year, the Dzamaras released a horrifying and grotesque image which they alleged was of Itai taken from captivity by his alleged abductors.

At a media conference where the images were released, Patson claimed that the country’s feared military intelligence had been responsible for the missing social justice campaigner’s brazen abduction last year.

During last year’s commemorations, opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai sensationally claimed that State security agents abducted Dzamara because he had intricate details on how the 2013 elections were rigged by Zanu PF.

After his broad-daylight kidnapping, Dzamara’s wife, Sheffra, approached the High Court in a bid to force the police and the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) to search for her husband.

During the hearing, both the police and CIO denied knowledge of his whereabouts, with authorities saying that investigations into the abduction had hit a dead end.- Daily News

EXPOSED BARBARIAN: No Honour In Violence Against Women And Children

fireblast…Nomazulu Thata

By Nomazulu Thata |  The irony of it all is that violence on children and women in our country is termed “honourable violence.” The article written by Chigumbu Warikandwa causes great concern to all those who are mothers of this great country: Zimbabwe. This man is actually in favour of honour violence. We are happy though that this kind of violence on our children has been set straight at legal/licit level. It is not allowed to cane/beat, corporal punish a child at school and in domestic institutions equally.

This man called Chigumbu Warikandwa is still living in the middle ages and does not know that we are living in an ever changing global village. Corporal punishment that he thinks must be upheld: punishing women and children corporally is so out of date; it has no place with progressive development. Curiously he does not mention that men should be corporally punished too, he emphasises the honour punishment of women and children. In our society women and children fall in one category: CHILDREN. He categorises how women should be canned and how children should be canned. How should men be canned little-minded Warikandwa, pea-sized- brain Chigumdwa?

How I just wish I had married a man like you: Chigumbu Warikandwa, I would have put you straight long back; right to your size. After a one year interaction as hubby and wife, you will be as straight as the road called “Soloboni Avenue” It runs from Bulawayo town and connects Kirk Straat in Beit-Bridge. Ask Bulawayo residents and will tell you the legend about this Soloboni Avenue. Married to a misogynistic and none respect for children man like you, the rhythm and grammar in that home will be: “give me my freedom or death!”

Our backward practices such as corporal punishment on women and children really impede all kinds of development in the Sub-Sahara continent. Our traditions and practices keep us behind, we are made to feel like we are just animals and by right sometimes! This attitude that of battering children and women is shared by many men and women in our societies, draws us backwards instead of forwards in terms of enlightenment and civilization. We must shed all those negative practices and one of them is never to treat our children like dogs. Warikandwa classically makes an equation between treating a German dog and treating a child, they must be treated with the same set of values, beatings/battering/canings/corporal punishment. I do not mean that dogs should be brutally treated. It is the sad parallel made to treat a child like a dog that is tasteless, barbaric but last.

We have lost hundreds children already, children who have been beaten to death by their parents or guardians in this new Millennium? We do not know how many women have been hacked to death in this millennium alone. This barbaric punishing of children in the name of “honour violence” happens in the African continent more than in other countries! Does it not surprise us when they tell us that Africa is just a dark continent! It is indeed still a black continent because of the manner in which we deal with our most vulnerable members of our societies: the children. With our philosophy of UBUNTU we are supposed to do better than tearing the souls of our growing children by corporal punishment/ child- caning or child-barbaric-beatings.

Research says that children who are caned occasionally at homes by their parents and guardians are very fearful and anxious persons for life. They always alert, not sure of themselves and their surroundings. What is most disturbing is the physical signs of abuse, visible: apart from pain, blood may came out of some parts of their bodies, bruises, torn clothing, broken items in the home. When they see that in their bodies, they become powerless and they are expected to keep this secret that they are barbarically and systematically caned by their abusive parent or guardian. Above all they blame themselves for this abuse: they may feel rage inside them, fell very embarrassed by it, and feel very humiliated by the beating as it shows physical signs that can be a source of laughter from other children at school.

The children will therefore internalize this pain and make it their own. This is where the poisonous problem starts because children have this natural tendency to identify with strength, will want to emulate that abuse they have seen and experienced for a long time. Experts believe that those children who may have experiences violence of that magnitude in their adolescence, they become abusers when they grow up. Boys who witness abuse meted on their mothers are more likely to abuse their wives or sisters and daughters equally because he thinks it is honourable to beat them. Again for girls, when they grow up seeing their mother beaten, battered by their father, they tend to think that violence in a family is wholly normal, her husband can beat her, she will take in any domestic violence meted on her by her husband.

Violence on children has deep seated, devastating consequences on the growing mind of the child. Experts say that violence at an early stage is the simple best predictor of juvenile delinquency, adult criminality, drug-abuse, alcohol abuse, post traumatic stress disorder and several other mal-functioning’s of adult life. Most of the abused people remain children in their lives; they emotionally do not grow up at all. The society loses them when those long term effects of child abuse resurface in the adult persons. They do not have a normal speech motor, or defined cognitive skill, when they are found wanting in their speech deficiencies either they withdraw or they become violent. The reason is that they never learnt to verbally speak but hands spoke for them most of the time.

“Honour based violence according to the definition is a form of domestic abuse which is perpetrated in the name of so-called “honour” The code “honour” which it refers to a set at the discretion of male relative and women who do not abide by the  “rules” are then punished for bringing shame on the family.”

Women should on this international women’s year 2017 reflect on this honour violence. It is a scourge in our societies and the nation as a whole. We are an educate nation and we pride ourselves to be the most educated nation in the entire African continent. Is it a sign of education to still glorifies honour violence and even write a shameful article and put it on social media, Warikandwa condemns our judiciary system that has recently put a statutory ban on caning children at school and home institutions and even in the public?

It should be our duty as women to protect our children: we are indeed very grateful of the constitutional law that put this explicitly, whoever is found guilty of abusing a child will taste the wrath of the law. This responsibility of looking after our children should be our prerogative as we are the ones who bring those children up. It did not, however mean women are not abusers, we have seen it in our social media how women have been abusing children, by beating them with sticks: meting immeasurable pain on the growing children.

On a second thought I would sympathize with this malcontent called Warikandwa. It is all evident that he was an abused child at his adolescent age. He wishes that revenge sub-consciously on others even his own children. It is for this reason he does not see any harm in meting absolute pain on a child or a woman. If he did not learn it at an early age to be gentle with women and children he will not be able to learn it at his adult age. I can already see a cycle of violence in his life, the evil that one does lives on! A cycle of violence is very difficult to break. It is not easy but we still have to learn that punishing children with non violent means can bring about better results than absolute violence. Violence perpetuates violence! There is nothing like honour violence little pea-big brained Warikandwa!  Again women are not children. Women are adults just like men. We are all equal before the law!

However, I would also hasten to say that you are not alone in this back thinking at all they are many men in Zimbabwe who share your disposition. Can you please go back and do some research and please do not use the bible as the single research source but go to the library and really educate yourself about child abuse and its devastating consequesnces.

Drama As Mliswa Almost Messes Pants After Failing To Access Public Toilet

By Staff Reporter | Norton Member of Parliament, Temba Mliswa, was on Tuesday saved by a nearby night club in Norton, from messing his pants after he had a running stomach and failed to access public toilets.

The MP who has on several occasions complained about his constituency local authority’s incompetence, faced the reality of poor service delivery in Katanga township.

“I had a good day, I went to the Public toilet in Katanga hoping to help myself there and I was surprised to find both toilets closed… I didn’t know that nature-calls had cut off times, so I’m trying to reach the Town Secretary to find out the rationale”, Mliswa twittered Tuesday.

“Had to reason with the guys at liquid bar…imagine you are having a running stomach or worse…iyo ka service delivery.,”said Mliswa.

Mliswa has invited Local Government minister Saviour Kasukuwere, to visit Norton Town Council.

He wants the local authority to answer service delivery issues which they were ordered to impliment by government, years back

SAA Airport Robbery Likely Inside Job

JOHANNESBURG(EWN) – South African Airways (SAA) says it can’t rule out the possibility that a brazen robbery at OR Tambo International Airport could have been an inside job.

A consignment carrying high-level goods due to be transported on one of its planes was intercepted by a gang on Tuesday.

The airline has moved to clarify that its aircraft was not affected and has dismissed reports suggesting that R24 million was taken.

SAA’s Tlali Tlali says the heist happened at the air side of the airport, an area which only personnel with the appropriate access tags can access.

“The time when the incident occurred, the aircraft was not on site.”

He says no traveller or crew member was exposed to the crime.

Tlali could not divulge who the consignment belonged to.

“The consignment that was targeted yesterday is high-value items that inside that particular container.”

The police, the Hawks and the Airport Company of South Africa (Acsa) are investigating the matter, while SAA has launched its own probe.

SENIOR INVESTIGATORS ON THE CASE

Acting National Police Commissioner Kgomotso Phahlane this morning deployed a team of senior investigators to determine how the heist took place.

Details are still sketchy and the authorities remain mum on how the money was stolen and the amount of cash which has disappeared.

Phahlane’s office said they can’t divulge any details regarding the investigation yet as the authorities still try to gather more clarity about what transpired.

Phahlane’s spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the team is working closely with the Hawks.

“We’re not in a position to speak further on the matter until we’ve more facts. We can confirm that we’re working alongside the Airport Company of South Africa.”

It seemed to be business as usual at the airport, with commuters and travellers streaming into the departure terminals.

The police commissioner’s office says travellers’ security remains a top priority. (Edited by Leeto M Khoza)

Mugabe Jets Into Zimbabwe

Heartened no doubt by the enthusiastic welcome he got in Ghana, ageing President Robert Mugabe is finally back home to a flood-wrecked, restless Zimbabwe.

The state ZBC broadcaster announced the 93-year-old president’s return late on Tuesday night. The official Herald newspaper said “hundreds” of Ghanaian journalists had thronged the president’s Accra hotel to interview him as he attended the west African country’s 60th anniversary celebrations. It was Mugabe’s second foreign trip in a week after a visit to his doctors in Singapore – and that has brought the president criticism from a number of Zimbabweans.

Tweeted prominent journalist @BrezhMalaba: “He’s back on home soil. But how many hours before he flies off again? Just one load of Jet A1 can build new homes for flood-hit villagers.” The CEO Magazine Zimbabwe asked: “Is he aware that there were floods in Zim. A concerned person wld take the time to visit the area & affected [people]”.

The full extent of Zimbabwe’s damage from recent floods is still emerging. At least 900 people are currently being housed in a camp for flood victims in the southern Tsholotsho district, eyewitness reports Wednesday said. A report in the Bulawayo-based Sunday News said that 17 children from a school in Binga district were injured when their classroom fell on them during the recent rains. In Hwange district it’s emerged that two preschoolers drowned in a ditch, the paper said.

Meantime in a move almost certain to intensify anger among poorly-paid doctors, the government’s permanent health secretary Gerald Gwinji announced in a statement that junior doctors who took part in a just-ended strike could be  forced to repeat part of their training and have their holidays docked. Epworth 65 Win Against Chihuri, Freed

A Harare magistrate’s court Tuesday freed 65 residents from Epworth, among them nine juveniles, who had been accused of public violence allegedly committed last year.

The offence emanated from their alleged involvement in last July’s protests against police corruption and a government ban on imports.

The accused were arrested between Mabvuku high-density suburb and Zimre Park medium density suburb and along the Harare-Mutare highway.

Police claimed the group barricaded the road with stones and burning tyres and violently harassed motorists and commuters resulting in their disturbing the peace, security or order of the public.

Prosecutors charged that through their acts, some motorists and commuters were forced to disembark from the vehicles they were travelling in while a police vehicle was also damaged during the protests.

But Harare magistrate Victoria Mashamba was forced to set the group free after she agreed with its lawyers they were not properly brought before the court.

It emerged during trial there were no warned and cautioned statements recorded from 42 members of the accused lot.

Among those freed were juveniles; Kupakwashe Mataka (17), Ronald Mbirimi (18), Kadrick Mapfumo (16), Robert Zhinexs (17), Bernard Muvembi (19), Tatenda Mucheka (18), Kennedy Mupindu (19), Albert Chipfuwamiti (18) and Takudzwa Tutai (17). Radio VOP

Mugabe Police Block War Vets Indaba

Police in Harare have dismissed as false, reports in the media that they had allowed war veterans to meet for their indaba in the city. In a statement yesterday, Harare provincial spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tarirai Dube said the war veterans had to comply with the provisions of the law to conduct their meeting.

“The police want to make it very clear that they did not ‘OKAY’ the war vets indaba as alleged. The applicant has to comply with the provisions of the law as enshrined in the Public Order and Security Act Chapter 11:17.

“Any gathering without compliance to the provisions of the law will be deemed unlawful,” she said.
The sentiments come after the NewsDay carried a story yesterday headlined “Police Okay War Vets Indaba”, in which they alleged that the force had finally allowed war veterans to meet in Harare for their indaba meant to discuss “Zimbabwe’s deteriorating economic, social and political crisis”.The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association (ZNLWVA) spokesperson Mr Douglas Mahiya was quoted saying police had given them the greenlight on Monday and that war veterans, Government and Zanu-PF officials were expected to attend.

In an interview yesterday, Mr Mahiya said if police had issued a statement pertaining to the issue, it means that they had denied them permission to conduct the meeting.

“They are the regulatory authority and if they have issued that statement, it means that they have denied permission. What else do you want me to say?” he said.

Tsvangirai Defies Chihuri

The MDC-T will continue its door-to-door voter education exercise in Beitbridge despite a police crackdown on its members, Matabeleland South spokesperson, Ekem Moyo has said.

Police arrested 11 MDC-T members in the border town, including its 2013 parliamentary election losing candidate, Morgan Ncube and a woman with a baby, while conducting a door-to-door voter registration awareness exercise.

“As MDC-T Matabeleland South province we condemn the barbaric act and cruelty perpetrated on our members as inhumane and unthinkable.

“Our members were doing what is right according to the Constitution, but according to State-sponsored agents the right thing is wrong,” Moyo said yesterday.

The group spent the weekend in custody and was only released on Monday on free bail when they appeared at the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court. Police accused the MDC-T members of running an unsanctioned voter registration awareness exercise.

The MDC-T Matabeleland South spokesperson, however, described the arrests as intimidation tactics, which he said will not cow them to abandon the voter registration awareness exercise.

Moyo argued that the programme, which is also running in other provinces as the opposition party prepares for next year’s general elections, was a legitimate political exercise

“We are following the dictates of our Constitution which allows us to campaign freely without fear not what Zanu PF wants. The one-sided application of the law by State security agents totally defies logic and it leaves our laws in a sorry and vulnerable state.

“The MDC-T Matabeleland South province will never be intimidated by the inhumane arrests and abuse of power,” he said.

The government has allocated $8,3 million to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission against $29 million the commission had requested to enable it to acquire vehicles for the voter registration exercise.

Independent election observer group, the Zimbabwe Election Support Network said the funding shortfall compromised the voter registration exercise, resulting on a situation where eligible voters could be disenfranchised. – Newsday

Women Of Zimbabwe Our Sheroes

Amalgamated Rural Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe, (ARTUZ), joins the women of Zimbabwe and the world in the commemorations and celebrations of International Women’s day.

The women of Zimbabwe in particular are heroines who have kept our country ticking but are still excluded and exploited in different spheres of life.

The economic meltdown that has ravaged our country has displaced most men from our country and made them refugees in the diaspora. The global recession world over has made the going even tougher as these economic refugees fail to secure dignified work. It is the Zimbabwean woman in most circumstances who have remained home shouldering all the burden of raising the family.

At the workplace the employed woman still fall victim of sex predators who are employed as bosses. We still receive complaints of female teachers who are forced to bed headmasters to get favours. Such favours include leave days, good accommodation and promotions. Our gallant female teachers however continue to deliver quality instruction for our learners.

The girl Child is still being segregated when it comes to learning and empowering opportunities. In some communities child marriages are still rampant. Girls are the first to be withdrawn from school when parents cannot afford fees for all their children. However recent pass rates have seen girls performing better than the boys.

It is very unfortunate that our employer who is also government seem not to recognize the good work that our Women are doing for this country. This is evidenced by legislative framework and administrative conduct such as the limmitting of maternity leave to only three. Women are punished for bearing children whilst at work. If a woman chooses to bear more than three times they are denied right to maternity leave.

ARTUZ demands unlimmitted fully paid maternity leave for women because child bearing is a national duty that one must be rewarded for undertaking.

Happy Women’s day my Sisters and my mothers.

Gaudencia Mandiopera.
ARTUZ Vice President.

Mugabe Whips Bunking Ministers Into Line

Cabinet ministers who had gained notoriety for absconding Parliament have started trooping back to the House after Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda read the riot act and threatened to seek the intervention of President Robert Mugabe.

Mudenda’s threats followed protests by MPs that the continued bunking of Parliament business by ministers was a sign of disrespect to the House.

But following Mudenda’s threat to write to Mugabe complaining about the truancy, some ministers who had not attended the House for months last week showed up.

These included Foreign Affairs minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, Women Affairs minister Nyasha Chikwinya and Youth minister Patrick Zhuwao.

“I must say when I walked into Parliament I nearly fainted when I saw the Minister of Foreign Affairs [Mumbengegwi]. True to your (Mudenda) word, he is here and we would like to welcome him to Parliament, especially today when the xenophobia debate is being discussed,” Norton MP Temba Mliswa (Independent) said when Mumbengegwi turned up.

MPs welcomed Mumbengegwi’s presence as there were four important motions on Foreign Affairs issues that have been on the National Assembly Order Paper since 2016. The motions have been awaiting the minister’s response before they are concluded.

One of the motions by the Kindness Paradza-led Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Foreign Affairs was discussed in November 2015 and to date Mumbengegwi has not yet responded to the issue.

The motion discussed the decay of foreign missions abroad, and Paradza had to reinstate the motion back into the National Assembly Order Paper so that Mumbengegwi responds to it.

Another motion on Foreign Affairs that had to be reinstated in the Order Paper was on a report of the delegation to the bilateral visit to the Parliament of Kuwait, which was debated in April 2016 and discussed the topical issue of young Zimbabwean women being enslaved in Kuwait.

A motion on the Foreign Affairs committee report on the exchange visit to the Palestine Legislative Council, which discussed Zimbabwe’s position in relation to the disturbances in Israel that was debated last year, had to be reinstated again in the Order Paper to allow Mumbengegwi to respond it.

Several motions that MPs gave notice to move in the National Assembly have clocked several months in the Order Paper without legislators debating them.

Mudenda told MPs that any motion that remained undebated for 21 sitting days would automatically fall off the Order Paper in terms of provisions of Standing Rules and Orders number 103.

Most Cabinet ministers have been absconding Wednesday’s Question and Answer Session where they are expected to respond to the legislators’ questions on government policy. The MPs also blasted the ministers for lacking seriousness in attending to government policy work at a time the economy continues to plummet.

Some ministers had gone for months without attending Parliament, resulting in some questions regarding their respective ministries going unanswered. – Newsday

Murder Charge For Beer Money Killer

A 34-YEAR-OLD man who allegedly fatally struck his cousin with a hoe for refusing to lend him P10 to buy beer has appeared in court facing murder charges.

Bongani Mhlanga of Lower Gweru allegedly killed Bright Sibanda (24) while they were drinking beer at a bottle store in Botswana on March 1.

The two worked illegally in the neighbouring country and following the attack their friends helped them to cross back into the country through an illegal entry point, but Sibanda died on his way to a clinic in Mangwe.

Mhlanga appeared before Plumtree magistrate, Mr Joshua Mawere and was remanded in custody to March 20.

Mr Mawere advised him to apply for bail at the High Court if he wished to make such an application.

Prosecuting, Mr Elisha Mazorodze said Mhlanga and Sibanda were working illegally in the neighbouring country at the time when they had a misunderstanding.

Mhlanga allegedly asked his cousin to lend him P10 as he wanted to buy more beer at a bottle store.

Mr Mazorodze said the suspect allegedly promised to pay back the money within a week but Sibanda refused to give him triggering the fatal attack.

“Mhlanga and Sibanda were drinking at a bottle store when they had a misunderstanding over P10. Sibanda struck Mhlanga with a spirit level twice on the head.

“Mhlanga followed Sibanda as he turned to walk away and attacked him with a hoe on the head. Sibanda lost consciousness as a result of the attack,” he said.

Mr Mazorodze said Sibanda and Mhlanga were helped by their friends to cross back into Zimbabwe through an illegal entry point near Maitengwe Border Post.

He said Sibanda died while on his way to Hingwe Clinic resulting in Mhlanga’s arrest.

Mr Mazorodze said Mhlanga and Sibanda were illegally employed as field workers in the neighbouring country. He said upon Mhlanga’s arrest, he was found in possession of blood stained clothes and the hoe which he allegedly used to attack Sibanda was also recovered. – State Media

Grace And Mnangagwa Clash In Gweru

Two Zanu PF factions are reportedly jostling to field candidates for the post of Gweru mayor, which recently fell vacant following the sacking of MDC-T’s Hamutendi Kombayi on allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of funds.

Well-placed sources said Ward 5 councillor, Simon Chapukira reportedly aligned to Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s camp has shown his interest to contest the post, which is also being eyed by Tiripayi Chipondeni, who is viewed to be loyal to the G40 faction.

The G40 camp is allegedly loyal to First Lady Grace Mugabe and reportedly has, among its ranks, the likes of Local Government minister, Saviour Kasukuwere.

Both camps have, however, repeatedly denied the existence of factions.

The elections, which will also see a deputy mayor and committee chairpersons chosen, were postponed to tomorrow.

“There is jostling within Zanu PF as two camps, team Lacoste and G40, want their preferred candidates to land the top post,” a source in the ruling party said on condition of anonymity.

“The Mnangagwa faction wants Chapukira, while G40’s preferred candidate is Chipondeni.”

The source, however, said there were efforts to unite the two Zanu PF councillors and field one candidate before Thursday’s elections.

Chipondeni, however, said he was not interested in contesting the election.

“These are just words coming from people, given our number (as Zanu PF councillors) that we are few, I can’t be interested,” Chipondeni said.

Chapukira could not be reached for comment.

MDC-T councillor and Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions central region, regional officer, Charles Chikozho is the preferred opposition party candidate. – Newsday

ex-Minister Dragged To Court Over Car Loan Debt

Former Higher and Tertiary Education minister, Olivia Muchena has been dragged to court by Parliament of Zimbabwe which is seeking to recover $32 653 the ex-Mutoko MP still owed under a vehicle loan scheme.

The money is balance of what remained from the $35 000 vehicle loan which was advanced to the former minister after Parliament deducted allowances and fuel amounts due to her before she was expelled from Zanu PF in 2015.

According to court papers, Muchena bought a Ford Ranger T6 through a government loan together with many other MPs elected in 2013.

However, Muchena entered an appearance to defend notice on February 22.

The Parliament vehicle loan schemes recently turned a nightmare for former Water Resources minister Simon Sipepa Nkomo and his wife, Roselene, who were also dragged to court over a combined $44 361 loan.

In the summons filed under separate case numbers at the High Court last month, Parliament said it was claiming $21 719 from Nkomo and $22 642 from Roselene.

The litigation against Muchena and the couple come barely a month after Parliament also issued similar summons against former Masvingo provincial affairs minister, Kudakwashe Bhasikiti and former Energy and Power Development Minister Dzikamai Mavhaire, alongside four other expelled former MDC-T MPs over outstanding vehicle loans debts.

The other expelled MPs include former Highfield West-legislator Moses Manyengavana, former Mpopoma MP, Bekithemba Nyathi, former Masvingo MP, Judith Mazhawazhi, former Entumbane MP, Gladys Mathe and former Pumula South MP Albert Mhlanga.

In its declarations filed under separate case numbers, Parliament said it entered into loan agreements in term of which it advanced $35 000 to each of the expelled MP’s for the purchase of their motor vehicles.

The August House said it was agreed at the time that repayment of the said loans would be effected through a stop order against their parliamentary allowances and that in the event of each member ceasing to be an MP before the expiry of his or her term of office through disqualification or imprisonment, Parliament would be entitled to claim the full balance of the loan. – Newsday

Man Kills Friend Over “Soul Jah Love” punt

Terrence Mawawa, Masvingo| A Chivi man killed his friend and neighbour for calling himself by Soul Jah Love’s “chibaba” street cache-word.

The chant chibaba was coined by popular Zim Dance Hall musician Soul Jah Love.

32-year-old Lameck Charidza of Giri Village under headman Chipundu will appear in the High Court this week. He will be charged with murder as defined in Section 47(1) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9:23.

On June 3, 2015, around 1900 hrs, Charidza was drinking beer with Prosper Chamaona(24) at Mupanguri Primary School and a dispute arose between the two over who should be called chibaba.

The dispute degenerated into a fierce fist fight as Charidza indicated he was supposed to be called chibaba.

Sausseki Nyandoro, a teacher at the school, called Berejena Police after failing to stop the fight.

The two were taken to Matibi Hospital where Chamaona was pronounced dead on arrival.
A psychiatrist at Chikurubi Maximum Prison, Dr Mhaka indicated that Charidza was mentally challenged at the time he committed the offence.

Charidza’ s relatives also said he had a history of mental illness.

“He(Charidza) has a history of mental illness. The incident was very unfortunate. Nobody expected him to kill his friend although it was well known he had a mental problem,” said Charidza’s brother.

Dokora: Zimbabwe Is A Muslim Country

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Lazarus Dokora has reiterated his comments that Islam was Zimbabwe’s first religion in 1980.

Two weeks ago Dokora ranked Islam as the nation’s first religion in 1980 while placing Christianity at number 4. He even claimed Islam is the nation’s designated religious faith.

Speaking last week in Norton, Dokora used the word, “peace” a direct antonym of “war” to reflect what people would face if they reject his new controversial curriculum in which Islam is listed as the first national religion at independence.

Dokora claimed to parents and teachers last week Monday that at independence in 1980, Islam was Zimbabwe’s first religion also calling it the nation’s “re-designated indigenous religion.”

The minister last year banned the Bible and voluntary club Scripture Union before reinstating the organisation following protests after falsely claiming that it is part of the education curriculum.

Speaking on the day, Dokora listed the Islamic religion as number one for Zimbabwe while pushing Christianity down to number 4.

While addressing panelists Dokora responded saying:
“And then of course there were the questions raised that: ‘is my my child going to be taught Islam?, is my my child going to be taught indigenous religion?’ said Dokora.

He continued saying, “in 1980 the curriculum that we fashioned for the republic, includes Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Christianity, Bhudiism,” he voiced while using his fingers to elaborate the importance by order.

He emphasised saying, “I was a teacher, I was just a teacher in the classroom, and those were introduced at Grade 2.”

He reiterated his comment saying that the curriculum has always had the religions in the order laid out according to his list.

“Do you think we should take these themes and teach them to ECB?  Can I follow your thread, because you think its a new thing, and I am trying to get you to appreciate that it has always been there in the formula (order) that I have described to you..” WATCH THE FULL VIDEO BELOW:

Video of Mugabe Struggling To Walk | ANALYSIS

President Robert Mugabe was this week once again the focus of international media attention after a video showing him apparently struggling to walk went viral on social media.

He was also pictured appearing to be snoozing as Ghana’s new President Nana Akufo-Addo addressed the West African country’s citizens and guests on the occasion of its 60th Independence celebrations.

In a short video-clip, Mugabe is seen trudging slowly towards the high table, literally dragging his feet, amid heavy security. Zimbabwe’s only leader since majority rule from Britain in 1980 continues to follow a punishing travel schedule despite age taking its toll on him and failing health.

In another picture, Mugabe appears to be in deep slumber as the programme continued.

Mugabe was expected back in the country yesterday. The 93-year-old leader has taken to flying in and out of the country at odd hours since last week’s trip to Singapore for a health check-up.

Information ministry principal director Regis Chikowore confirmed Mugabe was expected in Harare yesterday.

“We are expecting him today (yesterday),” Chikowore said.

Mugabe travelled to Singapore last week for what officials claimed was a “routine medical check-up”, returning on Sunday morning just for hours. With the country teetering on the brink of a nationwide strike by civil servants, the Zanu PF leader flew out early on Monday to Ghana.

In the last few years, Mugabe has had to face the grim reality that biology was taking its toll. The Zanu PF leader has shown signs of slowing down and frailty epitomised by his spectacular tumble at Harare International Airport two years ago after addressing party supporters on arrival from an African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The fall triggered a slew of social media memes forcing officials to go into propaganda overdrive claiming he had “broken the fall”. But Mugabe admitted: “I am human and it is not the first time I have fallen.”

Since then he has been embarrassed in Nigeria and needed help on a visit to India after stumbling over a small stair.

Government officials have told tales of an alert Mugabe, but the Zimbabwean leader is said to “sleep a lot” during meetings.

The veteran nationalist has already been endorsed as Zanu PF’s candidate in next year’s general elections. He will be 94 and, already the world’s oldest-serving Head of State, Mugabe will then serve his second term of office under the 2013 Constitution until 2023, when he will be 99. – Newsday

Mugabe Hires Brand New Private Jet

Zimbabwean taxpayers have begun forking out tens of thousands more for president Robert Mugabe’s travels as the 93 year old last week hired a private jet for his many trips.

Mugabe brought in a private plane from Bahrain which he used to fly to Singapore for his private medicals. The aircraft is the same he used to fly to Ghana this week.

The government revealed all oon Tuesday that government is now paying for the lease of a jet from Bahrain.

Transport minister Joram Gumbo confirmed the development Tuesday.

“Our planes are on mandatory inspection. They are grounded and cannot do long-haul trips,” Gumbo told the local Daily News.

“But there is nothing unusual here. We normally hire from South Africa whenever there is a need. Yes, the one you are talking about, we hired it from Bahrain. We do it every time. I don’t know why it’s news,” Gumbo claimed.

Air Zim’s old fleet comprises two Boeing 767s, three 737s, three MA60s and two Airbus A320s. However, only four of those are flying: one airbus, one Boeing 767, one 737 and an MA60.

The debt-ridden flag carrier, which is said to be losing up to $3 million a month, is saddled with a $300 million declared debt.

The national carrier has also over the past three decades struggled to shake off claims of corruption and ineptitude, which has led to the dismissals of several of its boards and senior managers.

Grace Can Take Over

By David Ndebele | First Lady Grace Mugabe can take over from her husband.

Robert Mugabe’s wife can easily seize the horns of the state and swiftly transition Zimbabwe away from the hands of tired war veterans.

The above assertions were part of a LIVE debate on ZimEye last night on women leadership for Zimbabwe.

Mrs Mugabe was once quizzed by the British Guardian paper’s David Smith,“I just wanted to ask you if it’s true you might like to be president one day.”

Her hard features, which can resemble a mask with striking dark eyes and sculpted cheekbones, dissolved into a laugh. She did not deny it. “I don’t know, I don’t know,” she replied and her husband February last month boldly told the state media Grace is now a full time politician like his first wife, the late Sally Mugabe.Analysis

One thing however Mrs Mugabe will need to do will be prove herself morally better than her peers.  Wrote ZimEye’s Grace Kwinjeh last night:  As the women step forward to challenge the failure of male leadership, a conversation takes place in our community: are women better leaders than men?  – At a glance a question that might seem to be naive and one that seeks a response which fits the usual stereotype that; women are mothers, more caring, more loving and will do things better.

But alas No!

There are examples in Africa of deadly female leadership in its most brutal form. Take former Rwanda’s first lady, now exiled Agathe Habyarimana who is accused of masterminding a Genocide against the Tutsi.

Another recent example is of Ivory Coast’s Simone Gbagbo, also known as the “Iron Lady”, who is accused of crimes against humanity, for her alleged role in that country’s 2010 post-election violence that killed more than 3,000 people.

As Zimbabwean women step forward positioning themselves for the highest office on the land, light illuminates over their history and the role they have played in society: where have they been placed and what politics have they advanced?

Indeed also in this assessment men do get away ‘with murder’ in the literal sense – no pun intended. We are more likely to vote for a man who sleeps with his whole executive, than say if a woman did this – she would be history, examples galore.

The women who have so far taken the bold step forward include, Joice Mujuru, Grace Mugabe  and Barbara Nyagomo – a historic move as this is the first time in an election that women ruffled feathers as push barriers, in their parties and society at large.

Nyagomo has been progressively building her party both in the Diaspora and in Zimbabwe, coming from the Diaspora, giving her that unique niche and voice as the only woman the vast community has produced so far.

The first time that women from within the ruling party, Grace Mugabe and Mujuru seem to be shaking off antiquated male politics that have held them down for decades represented by a man President Mugabe, who has ironically mentored them both at one time and another.

Speaking during his birthday celebrations Mugabe castigated those who charge that Grace must stay in the home and leave politics to others, reminding them of the late Sally Mugabe’s spirit at the dawn of independence as she influenced policy standing out in her own right as a politician who could move and shake things.

Grace Mugabe’s battle to win power within Zanu PF becomes an interesting one as she is placed at the epicenter of the revolution to dismantle the exhausted patriarchal system of governance that has sustained her husband’s rule over the years – A model whose main characteristics are sexism, dictatorship and cronyism adopted by most liberation movements who have ruled over starving masses with brute force.

The women coming forward also challenge conscious and unconscious biases in our society – Women who daily stand up against the backlash from a society that believes women should be seen and not heard. That backlash has come in the form of direct and indirect attacks, and we in the media have not been kind either. The sexualisation of their politics, being an issue, we are more concerned about who they have slept with or about to sleep with and not their ability to put in place sound policies.

Consequently, these are bold women who have taken a step forward, knowing fully that the Zimbabwean community is sick and tired of brutal male politics, as they aim for the highest office and will also be brought to account on all matters in equal measure to their male counterparts.

Being female is no excuse to loot, kill or repeat the very mistakes our male leaders are guilty of, sadly because as women they represent an alternative, the expectation bar is only raised.

SATANIST’S TRIAL LATEST: Court Hears Murder Cases

Rodney Tongai Jindu being led to the van from court by members of the homicde in Bulawayo

A MAN from Bulawayo who allegedly shot his friend, buried him in a shallow grave in Burnside suburb and sent a message to the deceased’s mother pretending to be her son suddenly leaving the country, was back in court yesterday.

Rodney Tongai Jindu (26) of Glengarry suburb is facing a charge of murdering his childhood friend Cyprian Kudzurunga (28) of Queens Park East on January 29.

Another case where he allegedly killed another friend, suspected to be Mboneli Joko Ncube, is on hold as DNA tests are still being done on the body.

Jindu confirmed his statements in Kudzurunga’s killing before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Tinashe Tashaya, who remanded him to March 21.

The gallery was cleared before the session proceeded.

State allegations are that Jindu also stole his friend’s laptop and cellphone which he sold in the city centre.

Jindu was arrested after he gave inconsistent statements to investigators.

He allegedly later confessed to killing his friend and led police to the shallow grave where he had buried Kudzurunga.

Prosecuting, Mr Nkathazo Dlodlo said on January 29 this year, Jindu was walking with Kudzurunga from Glengarry to Queens Park East.

He said Jindu was armed with an Optima pistol serial number 13752.

“After walking for a while, Jindu, who was walking behind Kudzurunga, fired one shot from behind and shot him in the head and abdomen twice and he fell down and died on the spot. He took his cellphone and laptop,” said Mr Dlodlo.

He said after realising that he had killed his friend, Jindu rushed back home and hid the pistol and Kudzurunga’s laptop in his workshop.

Mr Dlodlo said he took a wheelbarrow and returned to where the body lay. He shoved the body into a plastic bag, loaded it onto the wheelbarrow and pushed it back home.

He later drove to Burnside where he secretly buried the body.

Jindu made indications which led to the location and exhumation of the body.

Police recovered the stolen goods and the firearm allegedly used in committing the offence.

In Ncube’s case, Jindu allegedly drove to a supermarket situated at corner Robert Mugabe Way and 11th Avenue and met the victim.

They proceeded to Burnside suburb, but the reason for the trip was not mentioned in court papers.

On arrival in Burnside, Jindu allegedly pulled out the Optima pistol from his car and allegedly shot Ncube twice in the chest and he died on the spot.

He then allegedly chopped the body into pieces, set them on fire before burying them in four different shallow graves.

Jindu confessed to the killing after his arrest.

He allegedly made indications which led to the recovery of the body parts at four different sites where they were buried. – state media

DISTURBING SAD STORY: Zimbabweans Killed At South Africa Mine

AT least three Zimbabweans are suspected to be part of 14 illegal miners that were shot dead in Benoni, Ekurhuleni, about 20km outside Johannesburg in South Africa in vicious fights over gold.

Six of the bodies were found lined up in a valley on Monday, while eight were found yesterday.

Johannesburg police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dhlamini said the recovered bodies were being kept at Springs mortuary pending a postmortem.

“We’re yet to identify most of the victims and no arrests have been made as yet but investigations are in progress.

“I’m not able to give you the nationalities of the victims at the moment until we exhaust all identification procedures,” he said.

Col Dhlamini said some of the bodies had gunshots wounds while others had sharp stab wounds.

A miner who stays in the Springs area, Mr Gordon Manzou, said he knew three of the victims who hailed from Kwekwe.

He said the killings have been going on in the mine shaft since last week.

“We’re still searching for more bodies. Some of the assailants are still hiding in the mine shaft, while the others escaped through the mine’s various openings.

“The assailants, most of whom are locals, claim to own this place and demand that we pay them R50 as access fees to the mine.

“When we get out we share proceeds on a 50-50 basis,” he said.

Mr Manzou said the gang went berserk and stripped them of the gold they had put together.

A Zimbabwean illegal miner Mr Endurance Kazembe told The Chronicle yesterday that his colleagues were ambushed by an armed gang who killed them while they were mining underground.

He said three of the miners were Zimbabweans.

“The people who were killed were my colleagues and three of them are Zimbabweans. I was at home when they were killed. These gangs always come threatening to kill us.

“They will be demanding gold from us,” said Mr Kazembe in a telephone interview as he walked home from the mine at about 7PM yesterday.

Asked why he went to work at the mine where people have lost their lives, he said:

“The mine is big. My family needs to survive.”

Mr Kazembe cut the conversation short, saying he had come across some suspicious local people and didn’t want to be heard speaking his native Shona language, before switching off his cellphone.

Zimbabwe’s consul-general in South Africa Mr Batiraishe Mukonoweshuro yesterday confirmed the killings.

“We received a report that 14 people have been killed in Benoni. Six bodies were found yesterday while eight were found today. All the bodies had gunshot wounds and they were lined up in a valley.

“Police in the area have said they have collected the bodies. They will screen the bodies to see if there are locals. They will take fingerprints of the remaining bodies and give them to Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Lesotho officials here in South Africa so that we send them to our respective countries for identification,” said Mr Mukonoweshuro.

He said by next week, South African police would have finished screening the bodies and identifying the locals, if there are any.

Mr Mukonoweshuro said he would send the finger prints to the Registrar General and the police back home to try and identify the bodies.

“It’s highly likely that most of the people killed are foreigners but it’s unfortunate that most of these illegal miners never have identity particulars. They even use pseudo names, which makes it difficult to identify them.

“Such incidents happen all the time but it would be one or a few people killed not a big number. We rarely find it easy to identify the victims,” said Mr Mukonoweshuro.

A recently discovered gold mine shaft thought to have a lot of gold is said to be behind the turf war that has left 14 illegal miners dead.

An illegal miner said a newly discovered gold rich shaft number 6 in Benoni was at the centre of the deadly wars.

“The Basothos and Zulus are fighting over this new shaft, no one is willing to part with it as it contains lots and lots of gold. All the other Zimbabweans that were killed were caught in the cross fire,” he said.

He said that zama zamas (amakorokoza) make good money with the gold they sell to the “buyers” he did not want to disclose.

Buyers pay the illegal miners as much as R450 per gram which they sell for almost double on the black market.

In 2015, South Africa emergency workers retrieved 11 bodies of Zimbabweans who were killed when a generator they were using in a disused underground mine in Benoni exploded. The group, which comprised 15 people among them Zimbabweans and Mozambicans, reportedly entered the mine on August 27 using the generator for lighting and drilling.

During the process, they started a fire using planks which produced toxic gases which then mixed with carbon monoxide from the generator and exploded.

The 11 died of asphyxiation (oxygen deprivation) while a few managed to escape and made a report to the police.

The incident came a year after 22 Zimbabweans perished in a disused gold mine in Roodeport in May 2014. – state media

WhatsApp Suicide Horror, Man Kills Self Over Girlfriend Pic

The late Ngqwele Sibanda

A MAN from Emganwini suburb in Bulawayo allegedly locked himself in a house and committed suicide following an argument with his girlfriend over a WhatsApp profile picture.

Tenants who shared the same house found Ngqwele Sibanda (28)’s body in an advanced state of decomposition yesterday – a week after he allegedly killed himself.

Sibanda and his girlfriend, only identified as Brie, allegedly quarrelled after the former posted a picture of himself with another woman on his WhatsApp profile.

A post mortem conducted at the United Bulawayo Hospitals was inconclusive on the cause of death.

A tenant who declined to be named said she had last seen Sibanda on Sunday last week.

She said they (tenants) became concerned after an unpleasant odour emanated from Sibanda’s room.

“It smelt rotten but we never suspected it was a body. We did not bother checking on Sibanda as it was common for him to go for days without anyone seeing him,” said the tenant.

Sibanda is said to have been living with his younger brother who was away due to work commitments.

The tenant said Sibanda was also a lodger at the house but was responsible for buying electricity.

She said when the house ran out of power, they smelt a bad odour but the other tenants assumed it was meat that had gone bad in Sibanda’s fridge.

The woman said she started receiving calls from Brie who was also worried about him following their fight.

“He had a major fight with his girlfriend after he uploaded a picture of himself with another woman on WhatsApp. They fought and exchanged harsh words resulting in Brie reporting the matter to the police. Sibanda threatened to kill himself,” said the tenant.

She said Brie later called saying she had withdrawn the case against Sibanda.

“Brie joked saying we should check his room because he might have committed suicide. But I laughed it off saying a man doesn’t commit suicide over a woman, it’s something that can only be done by women,” said the tenant.

The tenant said Sibanda’s younger brother arrived home on Sunday but could not access their room.

“On Monday we asked one of the boys to peep through the window. He looked spooked and tried to run away. He struggled to say what he had seen before he eventually told us that Sibanda’s body was in the room,” she said.

She said a report was made to the police who broke into the house.

Sibanda’s relative, Mr Richard Mkandla, said: “When I arrived the police had removed the body but there were some blood stains on the floor. The smell was horrible… we had to use sand mixed with some chemicals to clean the floor. But it took us hours to make the room habitable.”

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango confirmed the sudden death saying investigations were underway.

ZACC Boss Pushed Away

pushed down…Sukai Tongogara

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission has finally resolved a dispute with one of its top managers, Ms Sukai Tongogara, who had threatened legal action, following her reassignment to an inferior post in the organisation. Ms Tongogara is now general manager, prevention and corporate Governance. In terms of the deed of settlement, Ms Tongogara remains on her current salary and benefits.

Her lawyer Mr Joel Mambara of J Mambara and Partners confirmed the parties have hammered a settlement.
“The anti-corruption commission has settled the matter between itself and my client,” said Mr Mambara.

“The initial intention was to transfer her from the post of general manager Investigations to an unauthorised post of general manager External Relations and International Conventions.

“After referring the dispute to the labour office as an unfair labour practice, the parties have resolved that she be transferred from general manager investigation, to a general manager Prevention and Corporate Governance.”

Ms Tongogara was redeployed last year, following her acquittal of two counts of improper conduct in July last year.

She contested the re-deployment and demanded reinstatement to her position of general manager Investigations, arguing her redeployment was victimisation and unfair labour practice.

Ms Tongogara threatened legal action if the commission refused to reinstate her.

In July last year, Ms Tongogara was cleared of charges of misconduct following a disciplinary hearing last month.

She was accused of being part of the secretariat that formed a private company called Private Mortgage Company (PMC), without the knowledge or resolution of the commission.

It was further alleged that Ms Tongogara and three others diverted $1,7 million from Treasury to buy individual shares in a private company. This was said to be tantamount to theft of public funds and making improper use of public funds.

Ms Tongogara denied both allegations.

In a scathing letter, Mr Mambara said his client was maliciously charged with certain acts of misconduct and unlawfully suspended from work.

But a fully-contested hearing absolved her. – state media

Rautenbach’s Green Fuel Flops

After misleading government claiming his company would electrify the whole of Manicaland all year round while displacing more than 1 700 families(an estimated 10 000 members from their traditional 10 00 hectares of land), Billy Rautenbach’s Green Fuel company has flopped.

The businessman who defied environmental assessment procedures in 2011 while destroying ancestral homes under a fake promise that he would in exchange provide employment for thousands of Zimbabweans, claimed he would electrify the whole of Manicaland. But 6 years later, his project has failed and proved a total flop.

Green Fuel has among other boobs, constantly failed to provide adequate supplies.

The current inadequate supplies of ethanol from Green Fuel last week forced Government to revise downwards the mandatory blending level of unleaded petrol with ethanol to 5 percent from 15 percent.

In an interview with the state media on Monday, Energy and Power Development Minister Dr Samuel Undenge said Cabinet has agreed that there must be more players in the production of bio-fuels.

“Cabinet agreed we should liberalise the bio-fuels sector and allow more players to take part. The current situation with Green Fuel is not about lack of capacity but due to the rains, the company has been finding it hard to harvest in the fields. It is my belief that once the rain situation stabilises, we will begin to see a change in the supply of ethanol. Above all, we still expect more players to start investing in this sector,” said Minister Undenge.

Government had earlier indicated that it is willing to licence more ethanol players to supply the country’s 20 percent mandate as long as they comply with partnership guidelines.

However, such intentions have to date not come to fruition as the licensing authorities have taken long to issue licences to interested players. Currently, Green Fuel, a joint venture between the Agricultural and Rural Development Authority and Macdom and Rating Investments, is the country’s sole producer of ethanol and has on several occasions faced challenges in meeting national demand for ethanol.

However, the Chisumbanje-based company has allegedly encountered ethanol supply challenges, compelling Government to engage Triangle Limited, a subsidiary of South Africa-based Tongaat Hulett to augment supplies.

Sources in the fuel industry told the state media Business that Government is currently getting ethanol supplies from Triangle after Green Fuel failed to meet ethanol demand due to incessant rains. Hippo Valley Estates Limited has ethanol production capacity of 41 million litres per month and has since applied for a licence to supply the local market. Minister Undenge said an unnamed investor has also shown interest in setting up bio-fuels plant in Mashonaland Central.

Police Block War Vets

State Media – Police in Harare have dismissed as false, reports in the media that they had allowed war veterans to meet for their indaba in the city.

The sentiments come after the NewsDay carried a story yesterday headlined “Police Okay War Vets Indaba”, in which they alleged that the force had finally allowed war veterans to meet in Harare for their indaba meant to discuss “Zimbabwe’s deteriorating economic, social and political crisis”.

The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association (ZNLWVA) spokesperson Mr Douglas Mahiya was quoted saying police had given them the greenlight on Monday and that war veterans, Government and Zanu-PF officials were expected to attend.

In an interview yesterday, Mr Mahiya said if police had issued a statement pertaining to the issue, it means that they had denied them permission to conduct the meeting.

“They are the regulatory authority and if they have issued that statement, it means that they have denied permission. What else do you want me to say?” he said.

ZRP Cops Arrested for Stealing Cattle

12 ZRP cops based at Zaka Police Station have been arrested on allegations of circumventing laid down procedures when clearing cattle, in a development that saw villagers losing thousands of dollars to stock thieves. The suspects have also since been hauled before a police internal disciplinary hearing to answer to charges of violating the Police Act. Police chief national spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the incident yesterday.

“Have those police officers not yet appeared in court by now? They should have appeared in court, however, if they have not yet, they will appear soon and this is a clear sign that as police we do not condone corruption within the force,” said Snr Asst Comm Charamba.

She could not give further details.

Investigations by The Herald showed that the suspects were yet to appear in court.

Indications are that investigations are at an advanced stage and the cops will soon appear in court.
Police sources said the officers would be charged with criminal abuse of office.

Their dockets were yesterday said to be on the verge of completion.
Several villagers in Zaka and surrounding areas allegedly lost more than 20 beasts to con-men and stock thieves who took advantage of the laxity in the cattle clearing system by the officers at Zaka Police Station.

The sources said the 12 police constables were last week nailed for breaching the Police Act when they appeared before a police disciplinary hearing panel.

‘’They could have been charged with stock theft for abetting theft of cattle by clearing beasts without following clearly laid down regulations but it was hard to come up with tangible evidence that would be admissible in a court of law for them to be charged with stock theft hence criminal abuse of office charges,’’ said a police source.

The sources said some of the arrested police officers would clear cattle while in beer halls or at their homes.
This allowed con-men and stock thieves to take advantage of the loop hole to steal villagers’ cattle.

The matter came to light after the Masvingo Provincial Anti-Stock Theft team reportedly received a tip-off.
Investigations spearheaded by Officer Commanding Crime in Masvingo Province Assistant Commissioner Crispen Makedenge were then launched.

It is suspected the cops were cutting corners in clearing cattle and could have been financially benefiting from the arrangement.

A Woman President For Zimbabwe. She Is Coming? ZimEye LIVE

Grace Kwinjeh

Grace Kwinjeh | This year’s International Women’s Day theme is ‘be bold for change’.

What an appropriate theme at a time that the failures of male leadership in our country Zimbabwe painfully glare at us, with the little hope left diminishing each day. An even more appropriate theme as more sisters this time round are boldly stepping forward,  to challenge the bastion of patriarchal power in Zimbabwe at political level.

As the women step forward to challenge the failure of male leadership, a conversation takes place in our community: are women better leaders than men?

The women who have so far taken the bold step forward include, Joice Mujuru, Grace Mugabe  and Barbara Nyagomo – a historic move as this is the first time in an election that women ruffled feathers as they push barriers, in their parties and society at large.

Being female is no excuse to loot, kill or repeat the very mistakes our male leaders are guilty of, sadly because as women they represent an alternative, the expectation bar is also raised.

Mnangagwa Ambushes Judge (ret)

Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa has opened an attack on Retired Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku saying he violated the constitution by appointing retired judge, Justice Vernanda Ziyambi to serve as an acting judge of the Constitutional and Supreme courts.

Ziyambi was appointed a further year after mandatory retirement age. But Mnangagwa says this was done without administering the oath.

Secret files.

The war is all to do with the fact that whoever becomes Chief Justice will effectively rule Zimbabwe. A solicitor writing in the ZimEye newsroom said, “the events surrounding the appointment of the CJ are most worrying. We have a fairly new Constitution that was made through some outreach programme. The CJ’s position is important because he/she is the head of the Judiciary both administratively and judicially. That’s the reason why the independence of the CJ should be safeguarded. The reason to seek to have the CJ appointed by the President is probably calculated to ensure that the CJ knows where the allegiance should be. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE

Oath of office

Meanwhile, Mnangagwa, who is also Justice Minister, said retired Chief Justice Chidyausiku violated section 185(2) of the constitution which requires a judge to take an oath of office upon appointment.

He raised this issue on the basis that the letter of Justice Ziyambi’s appointment by retired Chief Justice Chidyausiku did not address the issue of an oath.

However, Retired Chief Justice Chidyausiku and Justice Ziyambi maintain the appointment was done in terms of the constitution.

In his notice of opposition, Retired Chief Justice Chidyausiku challenged the arguments raised by Romeo Zibani who challenged the Supreme Court decision quashing the High Court order by Justice Charles Hungwe barring the holding of Chief Justice’s interviews last year.

Justice Ziyambi also defended her appointment to the bench after the mandatory 70 year age limit, saying she is an acting judge of the Constitutional and Supreme courts by virtue of a constitutional appointment.

In another case former cabinet minister, Olivia Muchena has been dragged to the High Court by the Parliament of Zimbabwe over US$35 000 advanced to her as a loan for the purpose of purchasing a motor vehicle when she was still a legislator.

The Parliament of Zimbabwe in its declaration says it entered into a verbal agreement with Muchena for the advancement of the loan which was supposed to be repaid through a stop order facility.

The agreement allegedly stipulated that in the event of Muchena ceasing to be a member of parliament before the expiry of her term of office through expulsion, parliament would be entitled to claim the balance of the loan together with any other expenses incurred in recovering such monies.

Following the agreement, Muchena allegedly bought a Ford Ranger T6 before she was expelled from parliament by her party on the 17th of March 2015.

After calculations, Muchena allegedly owes parliament US$32 000.

In response, Muchena requested further particulars on how the sum was advanced and the details of payment as well as the details of the payment plan.

Shock $615 Million Owed, As Over Half Harare Residents Not Paying Bills

Over half of Harare residents are not paying their bills while Government and business are also major defaulters, a situation that has seen council being owed over $615 million.

Acting finance director Mr Tendai Kwenda said Harare collects between 45 and 50 percent of what it bills residents.

He said the situation was now unsustainable.

“It is sad to note that our debtor’s book is growing every month. The last time we reported we were on about $600 million. We are currently on $615 million. Where we are billing an average of $24 million a month, our collection rate is about 45 to 50 percent,” he said.

“What it means is that half of the people in Harare are not meeting their obligations to council and the same half still expects council to provide services. I do not know how. We have people who have not bothered to pay a single penny since the debt write off that was in June 2013 and we are in 2017.” – State Media

Wicknell Under Police Investigation

under police investigation… Wicknell Chivayo

Businessman Wicknell Chivayo accused of insulting Sunday Mail Features and Opinions Editor Garikai Mazara yesterday handed himself over to Harare Central Police Station on his return from London. Chivayo, who was accompanied by his lawyers Advocate Thabani Mpofu and Advocate Sylvester Hashiti, denied the charges levelled against him and signed a warned and cautioned statement before being discharged.

The businessman yesterday confirmed handing himself over saying he had nothing against the Sunday Mail staffer.

“As a law-abiding citizen who is not above the law I had to hand myself in as soon as I got back from London on Monday. I have nothing against Mr Mazara. My lawyers are handling the matter,” he said.

The matter was reported under case number CR 2607/2/2017 at Harare Central Police Station last week. Reports say on Tuesday February 14, 2017 at 13.52 hours, Mazara sent a set of questions to Chivayo inquiring about progress of the Gwanda national solar project that his company, Intratek, is implementing.

Chivayo then referred Mazara to his project manager. Mazara proceeded to write a story, which was published on February 19, under the headline, “Chivayo explains progress”, in which the project manager outlined work so far carried out on the project.

In some WhatsApp massages revealed to The Herald, Chivayo hurled insults and obscenities at Mazara. “Urimbwa, unofa uchishupika. (You are a dog and you will die poor),” read one of the messages.

He went on to critique Mazara’s profile picture insinuating that he was HIV positive.
“On your profile picture muromo wakafunuka. I’m sure inzara and mapundu ese ayo, asi une Aids?” reads one of the messages. Some of the messages contain unprintable vulgar language. -state media

MUGABE OUT: Tsvangirai Picks Coalition Partners

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai is set to end months of frenzied speculation around the country’s mooted coalition alliance — with insiders telling the Daily News yesterday that the dogged former premier will soon announce his preferred political partners for next year’s watershed national elections.

Well-placed sources said the popular former trade union leader appeared to have made up his mind on which political players he could work with, amid revelations that he will hold a crucial meeting with his MDC executive on Thursday this week — where he is expected to first unveil his preferred partners.

This comes as former senior Cabinet minister and one of the caretaker leaders of the Zimbabwe People First (ZPF) party, Didymus Mutasa, has said Tsvangirai is the only person “capable and deserving” of leading the country’s proposed opposition coalition alliance.

Mutasa’s sentiments resonated with those of a large cross-section of Zimbabweans, including political analysts and civic groups, who have all said that the former trade union leader is the only opposition leader capable of giving President Robert Mugabe and the warring Zanu PF a run for their money in next year’s eagerly-anticipated national elections.

Tsvangirai’s planned meeting with the MDC national executive this week, also follows his recent nationwide consultative tour, where he met traditional leaders and rank-and-file party supporters — as he prepared to announce his coalition plans.

His spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka confirmed to the Daily News yesterday that the former prime minister was indeed ready to pick his preferred partners in the opposition alliance.

“He has heard what the people have to say and now it is time to come up with the coalition. However, it should be noted that coalitions are not only with political parties, but also with other groups such as war veterans, the church and civil society.

“In this regard, the president (Tsvangirai) will on Thursday meet with the (MDC) national executive and thereafter he will make a statement on the way forward,” he said.

“Mashonaland West marks the end of the president’s listening tour which has seen him visit all the country’s 10 provinces, and where Zimbabweans have made invaluable contributions to issues related to political alliances, the 2018 election strategy, as well as the governance culture the people envision post-Mugabe in 2018.

“President Tsvangirai is more informed after his tour of the entire country. He will soon be making decisions in tandem with the national pulse, as informed by his interactions with ordinary Zimbabweans,” Tamborinyoka added.

Analysts have previously told the Daily News that a united opposition, fighting with one purpose, can finally bring to an end Mugabe’s long rule, especially at a time that the nonagenarian is fighting to keep his warring Zanu PF united.

Tsvangirai has also been working behind the scenes with former vice president Joice Mujuru and other leaders of smaller parties towards the formation of the mooted alliance, which has been on the cards for a while.

Mujuru, who was sacked from Zanu PF together with bigwigs such as Rugare Gumbo and Mutasa, on untested charges of seeking to assassinate and topple Mugabe from power, is seen as one of Tsvangirai’s likely partners.

However, question marks have been raised over her influence in the proposed coalition, following her nasty and public fallout with Gumbo and Mutasa, which led to her forming her own political outfit last week, the National People’s Party (NPP) — barely a year after she joined opposition politics.

But Tsvangirai has since given Mujuru some political oxygen of sorts, despite his being disappointed by the ructions which eventually led to her departure from ZPF.

On her part, Mujuru has said she remains confident about her involvement in the mooted grand opposition coalition ahead of the 2018 polls.

“In line with our core values of inclusivity, we remain committed to a coalition of all progressive and democratic opposition forces to ensure we end the country’s autocratic rule in the 2018 elections.

“To that end, as the NPP we would like to inform our members, supporters, sympathisers, well-wishers and Zimbabweans from across the political divide that we remain committed to a democratic Zimbabwe.

“We remain builders of Zimbabwe in peace. We are the future, and we have the solutions,” she said last week as she announced the formation of the NPP.

But Mutasa later told the Daily News that while the proposed alliance was likely to include all progressive forces, only Tsvangirai had the support and “the credentials” to lead the coalition — completely rubbishing in the process both the capacity and chances of Mujuru leading the opposition coalition.

“For me, Tsvangirai is the natural leader of the coalition because of who he is . . . What the National Electoral Reform Agenda (Nera) is today stands for what Tsvangirai and the MDC built. The rest of us are latecomers in this game.

“We want a leader who will do what we thought Mugabe would do, but failed to do, and as ZPF, we want to have discussions about who should lead the coalition because when we wanted to do it while we were still with Mujuru, she prevaricated,” Mutasa told the Daily News.

“As a party, we cannot accept a situation where Mujuru leads the coalition having proved her lack of capacity with ZPF, although she is welcome to be part of the coalition because we need everyone,” he added without hiding his disdain for the leader of the NPP.

But the proposed opposition coalition has had its fair share of problems  with one of Tsvangirai’s deputies, Thokozani Khupe, at some point appearing to differ with her MDC colleagues on the need of having coalition partners in Matabeleland, where the MDC has traditionally performed well.

Khupe, while throwing her weight behind the mooted electoral alliance, questioned the wisdom of the MDC having to open the door to rival opposition parties in the region, when it has been dominating in the area since its formation.

“I am not against any coalition, but for me the question that we must ask ourselves is why we want a coalition as a political party.

“As a political party, when you want a coalition you will have realised a gap in your party, and as the MDC where is our gap? It is clear our gap is in Mashonaland East, West and Central where we have consistently not done very well,” Khupe said last month.

“So when looking for a coalition partner you must look for a partner who is going to be able to cover that gap . . . You can’t look for a partner who will come and disturb where you have won consistently since 2000.

“What value are they going to add? On a coalition, you must want value addition to what you already have. You don’t want someone who will come and disturb what we already have,” Khupe added.

A magnanimous Tsvangirai said, however, it was “okay” that Khupe was expressing her views, adding that in a democratic movement, “everybody is entitled to their opinions”.

“However, my party has given me a mandate to deal with the issue of a coalition and I am going to pursue it to its logical conclusion.

“Indeed, I as president am in charge of party policy and am mandated to deal with that, and what the vice president was saying reflects her opinion.

“We have already been talking to many parties and their leaders, and the fundamental issue is that the alliance must be based on respect for each other, as well as an acceptance of the reality.

“I know what the national mood is and an alliance will take place for the next election. It will be a dereliction of duty if I were to fail on this having been given this mandate. We cannot fail to have an alliance,” he emphasised during an exclusive interview with the Daily News last month. – Daily News

Nurse Loses Job After First Lady Rants

A NETCARE Linksfield Hospital employee has attacked President Jacob Zuma on social media after Zuma’s wife was recently admitted at the hospital for a medical procedure.

The nurse said the president was a disgrace to the country and wished he was the one lying in hospital dying of a heart attack.

Carmen Hartmann also revealed details of Zuma’s wife’s treatment, breaking the health profession’s core ethics.

Health professionals are not allowed to reveal patients’ medical details to the public or another person without the patient’s consent.

Hartmann, who has since deleted her post, wrote (sic): “So Zuma’s wife no 4 was admitted for ? plastic surgery. 10 very expensive black cars plus cops on motor bikes protecting wife no 4 pitches up at the hospital preventing other paying customers from seeing their loved ones in hospital.

“I’m disgusted. We pay for his wives and his children. Why are they better than the tax paying South Africans. Zuma you are a disgrace to this country. I wished it was you in hospital dying of a heart attack.”

Yesterday, the management of the hospital said they were shocked to learn about the post, published at the weekend.

“The employee in question has not only defied a code of practice adhered to throughout the healthcare world, she has also blatantly contravened legislation and our company policies and has behaved in a manner completely contrary to our values by breaching the sanctity of the commitment to maintain confidential all details about any patient,” hospital manager Louis Vanderhoven said in a statement to Sowetan.

He said regarding Zuma’s wife’s hospital visit, “we are also deeply embarrassed by the unforgivable personal opinion that the staff member expressed about the honourable President Zuma”.

Netcare chief executive Dr Richard Friedland, according to Vanderhoven, wrote a personal letter of apology to Zuma and his wife expressing his deep embarrassment and shame for this “most regrettable incident”.

“We would also like to apologise unreservedly to Madam Zuma and to the honourable President Zuma,” Vanderhoven said.

“The staff member has been called in to the hospital today and subsequent to acknowledging the action, has been summarily dismissed.”

Vanderhoven said the matter would also be reported to the South African Nursing Council and the South African Police Services. – Sowetan
