Basics Of First Aid

First aid should can be offered by anyone but ideally trained personnel to give first aid should offer first aid.

When offering first aid always consider your personal safety first.

Look out for any dangers and only act when you are confident it is safe to do so.

An unresponsive person is someone not moving or responding when you call them or when gently shaken.

Respiratory emergencies & CPR

Check if breathing by tilting their head back and looking and feeling for breaths.

When a person is unresponsive, their muscles relax and their tongue can block their airway so they can no longer breathe. Tilting their head back opens the airway by pulling the tongue forward. If they are breathing, you will see their chest moving and you may hear their breath or feel it on your cheek. If breathing, move on to step two.

Move them onto their side and tilt their head back. Putting them in this position with their head back helps keep their airway open. It ensures their tongue falls forward and blood and vomit drain out. It is sometimes called the “recovery position”.
Call for help or an ambulance as soon as possible.
If the patient needs CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), place the person on their back on a firm, flat surface and start giving chest compressions aiming for 30compressions in 1minute.
How to do CPR
Hand position: Two hands centered on the chest
Body position: Shoulders directly over hands; elbows locked
Depth: At least 5cm
Allow chest to return to normal position after every chest compression.
5 Give 2 rescue breaths (if equipment to do that available). Ensure each breath lasts about 1 second and makes the chest rise; allow air to exit before giving the next breath.

Gas leak, Fire & Burns

Turn off gas if safe to do
Evacuate the area immediately
Do not switch any lights or start an open flame
If there is fire use a fire extinguisher to stop the fire from spreading and ring the fire alarm alerting everyone to evacuate the building.
If someone is on fire remove the person from the source of fire, drop and roll him or her over or cover him or her with a fire blanket.
Cool burn under running water
Protect the burn with sterile, non-adhesive bandage (DO NOT APPLY BUTTER OR OINTMENTS)
Do not break blisters
Call for an ambulance and send to hospital
Chemical spill

Remove spoiled clothing
If skin or eyes affected rinse immediately with clean running water
If ingested do not induce vomiting and do not give water or mi unless told to d so by a health professional.
If inhaled move the person to fresh air and give oxygen if available.
After first aid is given send to hospital as soon as possible.

Police Ban CCC Chipinge Rally

By- Police in Manicaland province have banned a CCC Chipinge South campaign rally.

The rally scheduled for today in Chipinge South was to be addressed by the party’s aspiring MP for that constituency, Clifford Hlatywayo.

In a post on tweeter, CCC condemned the banning.

Said CCC: 

The regime in Harare persists in its abuse of state institutions, as evidenced by the banning of seven additional rallies in Chipinge, where our MP Clifford Hlatywayo

Robbers Pounce On Catholic Churches, Grab US$1 300

By- Armed robbers attacked two Bulawayo Roman Catholic Church premises Thursday night, held priests hostage and stole over US$1,300 in cash and property.

The suspects used machetes to attack the Roman Catholic Holy Trinity Parish, where they took US$1,200 and South African rands. They also targeted the House of Liberty Christian Church and stole valuable property.

The priests were handcuffed during the attack, but they were not severely injured. Narrating the ordeal, Gilbert Moyo, the resident Priest at Holy Trinity Parish, said the suspects forced their way into their residence and handcuffed them.

Four armed robbers attacked us at around 2am this morning. They used the back door to enter.

They handcuffed me and a student priest who is also resident here.

They stole an Isuzu vehicle, Samsung cell phone, a cash box containing US$1,200 and R2,500, a wallet with my (driver’s) licence and cash amounting to US$120.

As soon as they left, we went to the police to report.

They were carrying machetes and axes, among other metal weapons. Fortunately, we sustained minor injuries.

Acting Bulawayo provincial spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incidents and explained that the robbers were armed with a machete, iron bar, and a kitchen knife. Msebele also advised churches to protect their premises and avoid keeping large sums of money within their properties. Msebele said during the attack, a female resident at House of Liberty Christian Church was accosted by three armed robbers in the church’s residence at around 1:30 am. She said:

They assaulted her with a fist on the face, threatening to kill her and went on to demand cash from her.

The accused persons force-marched the complainant into her bedroom and ransacked the house.

This attack is the latest in a series of similar robberies on Roman Catholic churches and schools in Bulawayo, with 20 incidents recorded in the last 12 months.

Mnangagwa Gold Runner Spends US$1 Million On Mayweather

By- President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Gold dealer Pedzisai “Scott” Sakupwanya has allegedly used a sum of US$1 million to bring retired American former world heavyweight boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jnr to Zimbabwe.
Mayweather arrived in Zimbabwe on July 13, 2023, and was hosted in Harare’s Mabvuku high-density suburb, where Sakupwanya used the opportunity as a crowning moment in his election campaign to secure the area’s parliamentary seat.

According to reports, Mayweather’s booking fee for any appearance ranges from US$500,000 to US$749,000 before other expenses.
Earlier this year, Sakupwanya was named one of the country’s biggest gold barons by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ambassador-at-Large Uebert Angel in an Al Jazeera four-episode documentary Gold Mafia, which alleged massive gold smuggling and money laundering in Zimbabwe.

Upon his arrival in Zimbabwe, Mayweather was taken to Mabvuku and later hosted at a five-star hotel in the capital at a dinner where only local business people were invited. Speaking on the sidelines of Mayweather’s Mabvuku visit, Sakupwanya said he had fulfilled his promise to bring the boxer. He said:

I had promised them the boxer and it had been two years, but today, he is here.

However, the Centre for Research and Development (CRD) stated that Sakupwanya should be ploughing back to the Penhalonga community where his company’s mining operations caused untold suffering to communities. The government closed the mine earlier this year following reports of deaths, but Betterbrands has since resumed operations. CRD head James Mupfumi accused Betterbrands of neglecting communities while living lavishly. He said:

It is disheartening to see Betterbrands, a gold mining company based in Penhalonga, living a lavish lifestyle without showing any concern for the affected community.

The company focuses on their prosperity while the local communities suffer.

There has been a sustained campaign by CRD to hold to account for the deaths in Penhalonga, mineral leakages and environmental degradation, gold smuggling, and lack of transparency. The government has given all these a blind eye.

Farai Maguwu, the director of the Centre for Natural Resources and Governance, expressed regret that Betterbrands was not reinvesting in the community where it was generating wealth, echoing comments made by James Mupfumi. He said:

Extraction of gold by Sakupwanya in Penhalonga has brought with it a high death rate, accelerated environmental degradation and social conflict.

He is indebted in Penhalonga community whose lives are being seriously affected by his activities.

To then spend money he is extracting from Penhalonga on an American millionaire is a case of misplaced priorities and indifference to the suffering of the people affected by his activities.

Tendai Reuben Mbofana, a political and social analyst, expressed that Pedzisai Sakupwanya’s actions reflect the detachment of political elites from reality. Mbofana stated that Sakupwanya’s willingness to spend lavish amounts of money shows his detachment from poverty and suffering. Instead, the money used to bring Mayweather could have been used to build clinics, schools, and boreholes for the people of Mabvuku.

Political analyst Effie Ncube called the levels of extravagance regrettable and demonstrates that being in Parliament and the government has become an industry that connects to looting with impunity. Rejoice Ngwenya, another political analyst, said this exposes the misguided priorities of the ruling elites. Last year, Sakupwanya brought rapper Rick Ross to Zimbabwe for a show, reportedly paying US$200,000.

Mnangagwa Signs Patriotic Bill Into Law

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has signed into law the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Amendment Bill 2022, commonly referred to as the “Patriotic Bill”, which criminalizes “wilfully injuring the sovereignty and national interest of Zimbabwe”.

The Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Misheck Sibanda announced that Mnangagwa has assented to the Patriotic Bill through General Notice 1189 of 2023 published in the Government Gazetted on Friday, 14 July 2023. Reads the notice:

THE following laws, which were assented to by His Excellency the President, are published in terms of section 131(6)(a) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe-

  1. Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Amendment Act, 2023. (No.10 of 2023).
  2. Labour Amendment Act, 2023 (No 11 of 2023).
    The “Patriotic Bill” amended the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23], which has four clauses, three of which have been described as progressive excluding Clause 2.
    Clause 3 amended Section 65 of the Principal Act to make 15 years the minimum required punishment for rape, in response to the rise in crimes of sexual violence and rape.
    Clause 4 amended Section 155 of the main Act’s definition of dangerous drugs to include prepared opium, prepared cannabis resin, and a drug schedule.
    Clause 5 amended Section 174 of the main Act as the existing definition of criminal abuse of office, as provided for in Section 174 (i), is fairly broad, allowing public officials to be charged for honest mistakes made while doing their duties.
    The controversial amendments to Clause 2 (3) read as follows:
    Any citizen or permanent resident of Zimbabwe who, within or outside Zimbabwe, intentionally partakes in any meeting, whose object or one of whose objects the accused knows, or has reasonable grounds for believing involves the consideration of or the planning for the implementation or enlargement of sanctions or a trade boycott against Zimbabwe (whether those sanctions or that boycott is untargeted or targets any individual or official, or class of individuals or officials), but whose effects indiscriminately affect the people of Zimbabwe as a whole, or any substantial section thereof shall be guilty of wilfully damaging the sovereignty and national interest of Zimbabwe and liable to…
    The clause provides penalties that include a fine not exceeding level twelve or imprisonment for a period not exceeding 10 years, or both.

Three Men Appear In Court For Printing A’ Level Certificate For Student Who Wanted To Study In Denmark

Three Harare men have appeared in court for allegedly printing a fake Advanced Level certificate for a student who went on to apply for a scholarship to study in Denmark.

Farai Chauke, a director at Red Haven Media (Private) Limited, a firm which is in the business of printing and designing and his two unemployed accomplices Joel and Michael Sikaliveni were facing forgery charges when they appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Stanford Mambanje who remanded them in custody to tomorrow for bail ruling.

The complainant is the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) represented by Mr James Nyabonde, the head of the Security and Loss Control Department.

Allegations are that on June 22, Sandile Biancah Mabhena, with the intention to enrol for studies in Poland, approached Zimsec offices in Harare to get authentication on her certificates.

The court heard that Mabhena had in her possession a Zimbabwe General Certificate of Education at Ordinary Level which had 10 subjects with symbols Combined Science A, Mathematics B, Lnglish Language B, History B, Family and Religious Studies C, Business and Enterprise Skills C, Economics C, Principles of Accounting C, Food Technology and Design B and Ndebele Language C. The certificate had serial number 5570212 and was in her name.

Mabhena was also in possession of a Zimbabwe General Certificate of Education at Advanced Level with three subjects with the following symbols, Business Studies A, Economics B and Accounting B. The certificate had serial number A/20/0003927 and was in her name.

The complainant checked the two certificates and found that both had been tempered with.

Investigations revealed that the O Level certificate bore the name of Nkosikhona Gumpo and the A level certificate also bore the name of Rodney Ndhlovu in their system and that the symbols were different.

A case was then reported to the police leading to the arrest of Mabhena and the two fake certificates were recovered.

Investigations were carried out and it was established that Mabhena did O level at Lower Gwelo Adventist High School and sat for the examinations in November 2020. She wrote seven subjects and obtained six subjects which are Combined Science C, English Language C, History C, Family and Religious Studies C, Business and Enterprise Skills A, Economics E and Food Technology and Design C on certificate serial number 0/20/0112173 in her name.

It was also established that Mabhena did not study for A level education at Lower Gwelo Adventist High School nor any other school in Zimbabwe.

Investigations revealed that Mabhena wanted to enroll for studies in Poland and approached Bonani Ncube who is still at large to originate an O level certificate with good passes, including Mathematics and an A level certificate.

Ncube then charged Mabhena US$720 for the processing of the certificates and she paid the money in full to him.

It is alleged that Ncube engaged Chauke who is a graphic designer by profession and requested him to process the said certificates for a fee.

Chauke then engaged Michael Sikaliveni who was already in possession of an A level certificate serial number A/20/0003927 belonging to Prince Mwito who was a form six student at Highfield 2 High School, Harare.

Investigations revealed that Mwito never collected his A level certificate from school. It was established that the certificate was stolen from Highfields 2 High School.

Among the forged certificates, Michael endorsed Mabhena‘s names on Mwito’s A level certificate with the following symbols: Business Studies A, Economics B and Accounting B.

He gave the said certificates to Joel who handed them to Chauke sent the two certificates to Mabhena via DHL.

A follow up was made leading to the arrest of Chauke. A search was conducted at his workplace and several Zimsec O level certificates belonging to different people, Xerox heavy duty printer, two laptops, cellphones, a USB and two external hard drives were recovered. Chauke then implicated Michael and Joel leading to their arrest and the recovery of several Zimsec O and A level certificates, professional certificates, laptop, cellphones and a printer.

A visit to Highfield 2 High School by investigating officers discovered that a total of 97 Zimsec O level and 47 Zimsec A level certificates were stolen from the school.

Take Action Against Corruption, Govt Told

Parliament has urged government to take stern measures to address corruption. The legislature also called on government to increase budgetary allocations to State institutions charged with combating graft.

This was revealed in a report tabled before Parliament recently following a visit to Qatar by the United Nations Office of Counter Terrorism.

According to the report, unbridled corruption is a recipe for violent extremism.

“The State must take stern measures to arrest corruption, address gender imbalances, ensure transparent and equitable distribution of resources, implement conflict and resolution strategies and policies and strengthen the capacity of law enforcement agencies and the judicial system in order to guard against violent extremism and terrorism,” the report read.

“Starting with the 2023 budget going forward, the Ministry of Finance should increase its budgetary allocations on all programmes and projects aimed at strengthening the capacity of the State in preventing social unrest which has the potential of fuelling violent extremism and threats of terrorism.

“Bilateral agreements on integrated border management and sharing of immigration data with neighbouring countries must be prioritised to cope with ever-changing trends in technology which have a large bearing on terrorism.”

It adds: “By the end of 2023, government must ensure that all designated ports of entry and exit are upgraded with enhanced physical and electronic security systems while increased physical patrols supported by adequate tools of trade must be prioritised in order to curb illegal crossing along the borderline.

“The government must invest in capacitating and strengthening academic and security sector research institutions with a view to increasing knowledge on drivers of violent extremism and terrorism and possible ways of curbing these ills of society that threaten the security of the nation.”

Reports indicate that corrupt gangs within and outside government are creaming off assets worth billions of dollars annually from the country.

A recent Al Jazeera documentary on money laundering and gold smuggling also claimed that well-connected elites were stealing the country’s minerals.

There have been no arrests following the exposé, with some government officials including Presidential spokesperson George Charamba claiming that the documentary was meant to tarnish the country’s image.

Student Teachers Accuse Lecturers Of Fleecing Them Money For Good Marks

Students at Madziwa Teachers College in Shamva have accused their lecturers of abusing the institution’s resources.

According to the students, their lecturers are also in the habit of fleecing them of their money in exchange for good marks.

“The college has seen a rise in new ‘business operations’ instead of premises for co-conducting lectures,” they said in their petition.

“Buying and selling by lecturing staff at the premises (lecture rooms area) where lectures are supposed to be conducted is becoming the order of the day.

“Students are left with no choice other than to capitulate and get their assignments printed by lecturers for a fee due to fear of reprisals and the threat of being made to fail examinations.”

The students also claimed that some lecturers were openly approaching them to do their assignments on their behalf for a fee.

Madziwa Teachers College principal Edward Phiri yesterday did not reply to questions sent to him.

GMB Employee In Court For Murder

A 42-year-old scribe who is also an employee at Grain Marketing Board has appeared in court on allegations of killing his relative. Joseph Katete was facing murder charges when he appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Munashe Chibanda.

He was advised to apply for bail at the High Court. The court heard that Katete and the now deceased Craig Dendera (17) were at their residence in New Mabvuku, Harare waiting for Maxwell Katete who wanted to ferry the accused to the hospital for his doctor’s appointment as he has bipolar disorder.

It is the State’s case that Fatly Salaudi, who is a church elder arrived at the residence intending to pray for the accused person.

When she opened the door, she saw the accused sitting on top of the deceased who was covered with a blanket.

The court heard that Salaudi persuaded the accused to stand up and he turned violent and threatened to kill her.

Salaudi raised alarm resulting in his father, Frank Katete (84) coming to rescue the now deceased.

When Frank arrived, the accused was pressing the now deceased on the floor but he was already dead.

Biti Blasts Govt Over Pharmacy Closure Move

Former finance minister, Tendai Biti, says the suspension and cancellation of trading licences for pharmaceutical companies for flouting foreign exchange regulations is “blatantly illegal, puerile and irrational”.

Seventeen pharmacies had their trading licences suspended or cancelled after government accused them of destabilising the economy by forward pricing and violating the country’s exchange control regulations.

However, Biti has described government’s decision as illegal.

“For starters, as a question of law, no adverse decision can be taken against any party without due process and respect for the right to be heard; what lawyers call the audi alteram (pattern) principle codified in section 68 of the Zimbabwean constitution,” Biti said..

“As an economic measure, we have always argued that ‘ginyanomics’ does not and cannot work. Retailers are subject to market exigencies. In a cash economy, they will always possess huge amounts of cash. That on its own is no basis for their criminalisation.”

Some of the pharmacies, which have been suspended or had their trading licences cancelled, include Greenwood Pharmacy in Kwekwe, Global Pharmacy in Kadoma, Apex Pharmacist Pharmacy in Gweru, Greenview Pharmacy in Rusape and Grey Pharmacy in Mutare, among others.

A number of service providers are using the black market rate, forward pricing or exclusively demanding United States dollar payments to hedge against losses emanating from a weakening local currency. President Emmerson Mnangagwa re-introduced the Zimdollar in February 2019, and has on several occasions threatened to punish businesses for rejecting the local currency.

As of this week, the Zimdollar was trading at $4 998 against the greenback down from $7 000 in previous weeks.

Biti said it was a myth that the local currency had gained value against the greenback.

“Truth of the matter is that cleaning up all RTGS dollars in the economy and thus starving the economy of liquidity is not sustainable. It is an ephemeral measure that will be exposed once the printing press begins to run to finance insatiable fiscal demands,” Biti said. “We have been here before. This economy cannot be turned around by patchwork or kick-and-hop economics.”

Mnangagwa has resisted calls to dollarise the economy.

Man Accuses Girlfriend Of Emotional Abuse

A Harare woman has claimed that her live-in boyfriend wants to evict her after infecting her with HIV.

This emerged at the Harare Magistrate court where the man was seeking a protection order against his lover.

The man told the court that his girlfriend was emotionally abusing him.

She, however, denied the allegations and made counter accusations of abuse.

She accused him of forcing her to have sex with him without protection despite being aware that he was HIV positive resulting in contracting the virus.

“I do not mind leaving his house, but I want him to pay some amount as dowry to my relatives because we have cohabited since 2015,” she said.

“I never knew he was positive because he used to hide his HIV medication under the mattress, but now he wants to chase me away.”

The man claimed that his girlfriend had many boyfriends.

“She has a total of seven boyfriends and some are married men who live in my neighbourhood,” he said.

“I want her to leave me alone because she has been stealing my stuff and consulting traditional healers on what to do to get me to marry her.”

The man was granted the protection order.

500 Die In 12588 Accidents

Almost 500 people lost their lives in 12 588 accidents recorded during the first quarter of this year.

According to statistics on transport released by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat), one in four accidents resulted in a fatality.

“12 588 road traffic accidents were reported during first quarter 2023, from which were 474 deaths and 2 386 injuries,” ZimStat said.

“Of the 12 588 road traffic accidents reported during the quarter, 275 were fatal, with the month of February having the highest number of fatalities.”

Unlicensed drivers were cited as major contributors to road traffic accidents.

A total of the 62 289 candidates underwent a certificate of competence test during the first quarter 2023, and less than half succeeded.

“In all provinces, except Mashonaland East (54%) and Harare (53,3%), proportions of candidates who passed certificate of competency tests during first quarter 2023 were less than 50%, ranging from 30,4% in Midlands to 44,6% in Manicaland,” ZimStat said.

Government has taken a number of steps to reduce road traffic accidents, which include increasing roadblocks and introducing tougher penalties for traffic violations.

Passenger Association of Zimbabwe president Tafadzwa Goliath, however, told NewsDay that the poor state of roads was contributing to accidents.

“(Liquor is being sold) at bus terminuses and our drivers are actually drinking and driving,” Goliath said.

“Secondly, the second-hand cars that are coming from outside the country are not suitable for our terrain and the nature of our roads. Ninety percent of our roads are not fixed and it has contributed to the accidents.”

Last year, the country recorded 528 deaths in its last quarter.

During the 2019 and 2022 period, nearly 9 000 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in 52 585 recorded accidents.

Kasukuwere Campaign Team Forging Ahead Despite High Court Setback

Self-exiled former Cabinet minister Saviour Kasukuwere’s campaign team in Bulawayo says it will forge ahead with election campaigns for their leader, despite the High Court nullifying his candidacy.

In a ruling on Wednesday, High Court judge Justice David Mangota said Kasukuwere failed to prove why he should remain a presidential candidate.

He made the ruling after a Zanu-PF member, Lovedale Mangwana, approached the court seeking an order to declare a decision by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to accept Kasukuwere’s nomination papers null and void.

Mangwana said Kasukuwere’s candidature was in violation of section 91 of the Constitution because he had been out of his constituency and country for 18 consecutive months.

Kasukuwere has since filed an appeal at the Supreme Court challenging the High Court ruling.

Kasukuwere’s Bulawayo executive campaign team member, Richard Musiyadzaanikwa, urged fellow supporters to remain united.

“Attention: Bulawayo executive committee, co-ordinators, polling agents: This message serves to notify you that we got communication from our top comrades giving us the green light to carry on with our campaigns for our independent presidential candidate Saviour Kasukuwere,” Musiyadzaanikwa said.

“So as Bulawayo constituency convenors we are not going to be stopped by the court or Zimbabwe Electoral Commission regarding our campaigns.

“So it is the duty of every one of us to take the campaigns to a higher level. Let’s rally support for our president Saviour Kasukuwere and we can only accept the directive from his office.”

Kasukuwere, who was popularly known as Tyson in Zanu-PF political circles in his heyday, fled the country during the 2017 military coup which deposed the late former President Robert Mugabe and propelled Emmerson Mnangagwa to the presidency.

Kasukuwere faces arrest over pending cases, police have said. Zanu-PF has also said Kasukuwere faces other criminal charges.

Biti Blasts Govt For Illegal And Irrational Suspension Of Pharmacies

Former finance minister, Tendai Biti, says the suspension and cancellation of trading licences for pharmaceutical companies for flouting foreign exchange regulations is “blatantly illegal, puerile and irrational.”

Seventeen pharmacies had their trading licences suspended or cancelled after government accused them of destabilising the economy by forward pricing and violating the country’s exchange control regulations.

However, Biti has described government’s decision as illegal.

“For starters, as a question of law, no adverse decision can be taken against any party without due process and respect for the right to be heard; what lawyers call the audi alteram (pattern) principle codified in section 68 of the Zimbabwean constitution,” Biti said..
“As an economic measure, we have always argued that ‘ginyanomics’ does not and cannot work. Retailers are subject to market exigencies. In a cash economy, they will always possess huge amounts of cash. That on its own is no basis for their criminalisation.”
Some of the pharmacies, which have been suspended or had their trading licences cancelled, include Greenwood Pharmacy in Kwekwe, Global Pharmacy in Kadoma, Apex Pharmacist Pharmacy in Gweru, Greenview Pharmacy in Rusape and Grey Pharmacy in Mutare, among others.

A number of service providers are using the black market rate, forward pricing or exclusively demanding United States dollar payments to hedge against losses emanating from a weakening local currency. President Emmerson Mnangagwa re-introduced the Zimdollar in February 2019, and has on several occasions threatened to punish businesses for rejecting the local currency.

As of this week, the Zimdollar was trading at $4 998 against the greenback down from $7 000 in previous weeks.

Biti said it was a myth that the local currency had gained value against the greenback.

“Truth of the matter is that cleaning up all RTGS dollars in the economy and thus starving the economy of liquidity is not sustainable. It is an ephemeral measure that will be exposed once the printing press begins to run to finance insatiable fiscal demands,” Biti said. “We have been here before. This economy cannot be turned around by patchwork or kick-and-hop economics.”

Mnangagwa has resisted calls to dollarise the economy.

ZEC Forced To Delay Ballot Printing

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) says it has been forced to delay the printing of ballot papers because of numerous pending court cases.

Addressing election observers in Harare early this week, ZEC deputy chairperson Rodney Simukai Kiwa said the court cases have put the elections management body under pressure to meet specified timelines to prepare for the 23 August 2023 elections. Kiwa said:

Now on the issue of the ballot paper designing and printing, section 239(G) of the Constitution gives the commission the mandate to design, print and distribute ballot papers among other functions.

The commission has commenced the exercises of designing ballot papers for all contesting National Assembly and local authority wards as well as the presidential ballot.

The drawback, however, as you may appreciate, is the designing of the ballot papers for those constituencies where an appeal has been lodged against the rejection and acceptance of a candidate’s papers.

We have to live with that until the court process has been done and completed. There is nothing we can do, but it puts a lot of pressure on us in terms of meeting the timelines.

So bear that in mind. Don’t ask us why this has not been done. It is a legal process and ZEC is bound to respect the law. We hope that the legal challenge is concluded as soon as possible.

ZEC is a respondent in several court cases where political parties are querying the 21 June nomination process.

Presidential aspirants Linda Masarira and Elisabeth Valerio are not happy after their nomination papers were rejected for various reasons while Saviour Kasukuwere has approached the Supreme Court contesting the nullification of his candidature by the High Court.

CCC has filed an appeal at the Electoral Court against the nomination court’s decision to accept nomination papers for some candidates who reportedly forged signatures to submit their nomination forms under the opposition party.

ZANU PF has also challenged a decision by ZEC to accept nomination papers for opposition Bulawayo aspiring MPs after the 4 PM deadline on 21 June.

Clerics Set Free After Spending 1 Year Under Prosecution

A Zimbabwe court has set free 10 clerics and pro-democracy campaigners, who had spent more than one year under prosecution on charges of disorderly conduct after they were arrested last year by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers, who suppressed their prayer meeting in Harare.

The 10 clerics and pro-democracy campaigners who include Tariro Mukunga, Henry Mutasa, Mbuso Fuzwayo, the Secretary-General of Ibhetshu Likazulu, Melusi Nyathi, Felix Nyika, Edith Gurupira, Irene Gaswa, Patrick Nyaruni, Loice Dube and Angela Henrieta Shoko, were arrested by ZRP officers on 10 June 2022 in Harare at a prayer session organised by Zimbabwe Divine Destiny Network, an interdenominational religious organisation and which was disrupted by some law enforcement agents.

Mukunga, Mutasa, Fuzwayo, Nyathi, Nyika, Gurupira, Gaswa, Nyaruni, Dube and Shoko were charged with disorderly conduct in a public place as defined in section 41 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

Prosecutors alleged that the worshippers had engaged in ‘riotous conduct’.

The 10 clerics and pro-democracy campaigners were recently set free after they were removed from remand by Harare Magistrate Munashe Chibanda as their lawyer Kossam Ncube, of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, applied for their removal from remand on the basis that they had spent virtually a whole year under prosecution without being furnished with a trial date.

Magistrate Chibanda ruled that the state’s delay in furnishing them with a trial date was inordinate and there was no justification or reasonable cause to continue placing them on remand before ordering prosecutors to proceed by issuing summons for them to appear in court if the state intends to prosecute them again.

Kwekwe Man Beaten To Death At Lover’s Place

KWEKWE–A Kwekwe man who was mistaken for a thief while knocking at his girlfriend’s door died after being severely assaulted by her neighbours.

Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the development to The Mirror. 

He said Sylvester Ncube (25) was assaulted on Sunday last week around 9 pm, and he succumbed to the injuries on July 7, 2023, at Kwekwe General Hospital.
 
Circumstances are that Sylvester knocked on his girlfriend’s door. There was no response, and he knocked on her neighbour, Philip Luthuli’s (22) door. 

Philip mistook him for a robber, teamed up with Shepherd Mafukidze, and allegedly assaulted Sylvester with a sjambok all over the body.

They later set him free.

RESIDENTS of Mabvuku were given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity after they interacted with boxing legend, Floyd Mayweather Junior, who is in Zimbabwe for a three-day visit dubbed the ‘Motherland Tour’.

A visit which started with a grand arrival and a rousing welcome by hordes of fans at the Robert Mugabe International Airport Thursday morning saw the boxing legend go down to the roots where the ordinary folk reside.

The choice of venue was befitting as the host, Scott Sakupwanya has found a way to connect with the people of Mabvuku.

The community did not disappoint as a huge crowd gathered at the famous Number One Grounds early in the morning as they awaited Mayweather’s arrival.

When he finally arrived, the place erupted as they jostled to catch a glimpse of the superstar.

“I am so happy, even my grandchildren are here to see for themselves that if they work hard, they can get to Mayweather’s level,” said a Mabvuku resident.

“This is good because it inspires the youths to do well and work hard,” said another resident.

Mayweather is visiting Zimbabwe at the invitation of Better Brands owned by Scott Sakupwanya.

“Just like I promised, he is here and it’s for the youths. I want to inspire the people of Mabvuku to work hard and see how far you can go,” said Sakupwanya.

The global icon felt at home in Zimbabwe.

“Africa is my home and the people supported me from day one and I will forever be grateful. I will continue to visit,” said Mayweather.

The government has hailed Mayweather’s visit as a big endorsement of destination Zimbabwe.

Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Permanent Secretary, Dr Thokozani Chitepo said, “This will forever change the sporting landscape in Zimbabwe. Mayweather is a global star and you can see everyone is happy, but it’s not just about happiness, it’s also a big endorsement of Destination Zimbabwe and he will have a chance to mix with our boxers and that’s priceless.”

He is expected to visit the country’s tourist resorts before his departure.

Castle Lager Premier Soccer League side Yadah have become the first ever team in the local top-flight to have Brazilian players on their ranks, after signing three stars from the South American country.

The Prophet Walter Magaya-owned side unveiled the three players at Yadah Hotel this morning.

Mapeza Speaks On Lifting Of ZIFA Ban

FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza believes football fans can fully celebrate the lifting of FIFA’s suspension on Zimbabwe, once it has been confirmed that national teams will play home games in the country.

On Monday, FIFA lifted Zimbabwe’s suspension and appointed a four-member normalisation committee to run the day to day affairs of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) until at least June next year.

The development comes at a time when Zimbabwe has no stadium fit to host international matches as the biggest facility in the country —the National Sports Stadium —was flagged down by CAF in November 2021 for not having set international standards.

Mapeza —who was the last national team coach before the suspension when he took to the Warriors to the 2021 Afcon finals in Cameroon —reckons Zimbabwe’s long-awaited return to the international community cannot be fully celebrated as long as there is no assurance that national team games will be played in the country.

“I’m still worried if you look at our stadiums issue at the moment. I understand the games will be played in November,” Mapeza said ahead of his side’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League game against Yadah at Mandava Stadium tomorrow.

“I was reading the paper today (yesterday) and our Minister of Sport (Kirsty Coventry) said maybe within the next three or four weeks, the National Sports Stadium will be done.

“So it means maybe the bucket seats will be there because it will be unfortunate for us to get the reprieve but we end up relocating to South Africa to play our World Cup qualifiers there.

“People want to watch football, look at the support the cricket team was getting. We also need that type of support in our football.

“The stadia issue needs to be fixed first then maybe we can start saying: “We are back in it now.” But for the time being, it’s still a 50-50 situation. We are in, but where are we going to play the football?

“But apart from that, I think everybody is happy, we are all excited that we have been given the reprieve and we just hope everything goes well for us,” added Mapeza.

The former Zimbabwe captain could not be drawn into discussing the possibility of him becoming the next Warriors coach.

“That will be a story for another day,” said Mapeza.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe were placed in Group C in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifiers in the draw held yesterday.

The Warriors will compete for a place at the global extravaganza with Nigeria, South Africa, Benin, Rwanda and Lesotho.

E-Creator Suspect In Court

Founder of Online Ponzi Scheme Denied Bail after Court Appearance

Harare, Zimbabwe – Zhao Jiaotong, the alleged mastermind behind the online Ponzi scheme known as e-creator, appeared in court yesterday facing fraud charges. The scheme, which defrauded unsuspecting individuals across the country of over US$1 million, has left numerous victims devastated. Zhao’s bail application was denied, and he was remanded in custody until Monday.

During the court hearing before Harare magistrate Mrs. Marehwanazvo Gofa, it was revealed that Zhao conceived the plan for the e-creator online investment scheme in January of this year. On February 7, in collaboration with Trymore Tapfumaneyi, Justin Kuchekenya, Bily Thomas Syedou, Abraham Mutambu, and other individuals who remain at large, Zhao registered a company named E-Creator Electronic Commerce Private Limited with the Zimbabwean Registrar of Companies. The company’s offices were allegedly located in room 15 and 16 on the 10th Floor of Joina City Building, Harare.

According to court proceedings, Zhao launched the company as an online e-commerce operator. Between February and July, he deceived unsuspecting individuals by falsely promising them significant monthly profits based on their investments. Many people from across the country were lured into the scheme, with some investing up to US$1,000 through EcoCash numbers provided by Zhao.

To enhance the company’s appeal, Zhao utilized various media outlets, including the national television broadcaster ZTV, as well as popular social media influencers such as Tarisai Cleopatra Munetsiwa, also known as Madam Boss, and Admire Mushambi, also known as Mama Vee. These influencers advertised the e-creator business on their platforms, aiming to attract more subscribers.

The company also employed agents in major towns throughout the country to market its services. However, on July 3, several complainants faced difficulties accessing their funds and sought clarification from the company. Abraham Mutambu, one of the accused individuals, reassured the victims that the issues were a result of a system upgrade, which temporarily prevented access to their funds. He promised that the situation would normalize soon.

To their shock, on July 5, the complainants discovered a notice on E-Creator Electronic Commerce (Private) Limited’s website stating that the company had ceased operations. The website prominently displayed a passport-sized photo of Zhao along with a message indicating that he had absconded with the complainants’ money to China.

When the victims visited Zhao’s known offices, they found them permanently closed, with no signs of business activity. It was later revealed that Zhao had indeed withdrawn the funds and fled the country. To date, the victims have suffered an estimated loss of approximately US$1 million, and none of the funds have been recovered.

Zhao Jiaotong’s appearance in court marks a significant step towards seeking justice for the victims of the e-creator Ponzi scheme. As the legal proceedings progress, the hope remains that the full extent of the scheme’s operations will be uncovered, providing some solace to those who fell victim to this elaborate deception.

When offering first aid always consider your personal safety first.

Look out for any dangers and only act when you are confident it is safe to do so.

An unresponsive person is someone not moving or responding when you call them or when gently shaken.

Respiratory emergencies & CPR

Check if breathing by tilting their head back and looking and feeling for breaths.
When a person is unresponsive, their muscles relax and their tongue can block their airway so they can no longer breathe. Tilting their head back opens the airway by pulling the tongue forward. If they are breathing, you will see their chest moving and you may hear their breath or feel it on your cheek. If breathing, move on to step two.

Move them onto their side and tilt their head back. Putting them in this position with their head back helps keep their airway open. It ensures their tongue falls forward and blood and vomit drain out. It is sometimes called the “recovery position”.
Call for help or an ambulance as soon as possible.
If the patient needs CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), place the person on their back on a firm, flat surface and start giving chest compressions aiming for 30compressions in 1minute.
How to do CPR
Hand position: Two hands centered on the chest
Body position: Shoulders directly over hands; elbows locked
Depth: At least 5cm
Allow chest to return to normal position after every chest compression.
5 Give 2 rescue breaths (if equipment to do that available). Ensure each breath lasts about 1 second and makes the chest rise; allow air to exit before giving the next breath.

Evacuate the area immediately
Do not switch any lights or start an open flame
If there is fire use a fire extinguisher to stop the fire from spreading and ring the fire alarm alerting everyone to evacuate the building.
If someone is on fire remove the person from the source of fire, drop and roll him or her over or cover him or her with a fire blanket.
Cool burn under running water

Mnangagwa Apologist Puts Mayweather In Pocket

RESIDENTS of Mabvuku were given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity after they interacted with boxing legend, Floyd Mayweather Junior, who is in Zimbabwe for a three-day visit dubbed the ‘Motherland Tour’.

A visit which started with a grand arrival and a rousing welcome by hordes of fans at the Robert Mugabe International Airport Thursday morning saw the boxing legend go down to the roots where the ordinary folk reside.

The choice of venue was befitting as the host, Scott Sakupwanya has found a way to connect with the people of Mabvuku.

The community did not disappoint as a huge crowd gathered at the famous Number One Grounds early in the morning as they awaited Mayweather’s arrival.

When he finally arrived, the place erupted as they jostled to catch a glimpse of the superstar.

“I am so happy, even my grandchildren are here to see for themselves that if they work hard, they can get to Mayweather’s level,” said a Mabvuku resident.

“This is good because it inspires the youths to do well and work hard,” said another resident.

Mayweather is visiting Zimbabwe at the invitation of Better Brands owned by Scott Sakupwanya.

“Just like I promised, he is here and it’s for the youths. I want to inspire the people of Mabvuku to work hard and see how far you can go,” said Sakupwanya.

The global icon felt at home in Zimbabwe.

“Africa is my home and the people supported me from day one and I will forever be grateful. I will continue to visit,” said Mayweather.

The government has hailed Mayweather’s visit as a big endorsement of destination Zimbabwe.

Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Permanent Secretary, Dr Thokozani Chitepo said, “This will forever change the sporting landscape in Zimbabwe. Mayweather is a global star and you can see everyone is happy, but it’s not just about happiness, it’s also a big endorsement of Destination Zimbabwe and he will have a chance to mix with our boxers and that’s priceless.”

Mayweather watched exhibition fights that took place at the Number One Grounds just before he had a mini-training session.

He is expected to visit the country’s tourist resorts before his departure.

Man Killed At Girlfriend’s Place

KWEKWE–A Kwekwe man who was mistaken for a thief while knocking at his girlfriend’s door died after being severely assaulted by her neighbours.

Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the development to The Mirror. 

He said Sylvester Ncube (25) was assaulted on Sunday last week around 9 pm, and he succumbed to the injuries on July 7, 2023, at Kwekwe General Hospital.
 
Circumstances are that Sylvester knocked on his girlfriend’s door. There was no response, and he knocked on her neighbour, Philip Luthuli’s (22) door. 

Philip mistook him for a robber, teamed up with Shepherd Mafukidze, and allegedly assaulted Sylvester with a sjambok all over the body.

They later set him free.

Brothels, Shabeens Flood Harare

By-Residents in Harare are complaining that brothels and shebeens are on the increase, and they fear that if not monitored, this would lead to drug use and prostitution.

People are resorting to all forms of business ventures, including prostitution, drug selling, and beer, due to high levels of unemployment.
In addition, the loud music, foul language, and criminal activities at these establishments are affecting other residents.
Although it is illegal for house owners to turn their properties into business enterprises, enforcing these laws is challenging.
Harare Residents Trust director, Precious Shumba, said they had received numerous reports of young girls and boys being lured to drug bases in different suburbs, with shebeens becoming a major scene for human interactions.
“Brothels and shebeens are a social reality with the high levels of unemployment. People resort to all forms of business ventures to survive the hardships.
“The major challenge is that these shebeens play loud music, which affects other residents,” he said.
Harare Provincial Police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, said they had also recorded a rise in shebeens and unlicensed business operations such as rigs.
“We are receiving reports of noise pollution and places like air BnBs are now hideouts for criminals,” he said.
“Juvenile delinquency and illicit behaviour are the order of the day. Sex parties and drug dealings are rampant in those places.”
Harare City Council spokesperson, Innocent Ruwende, said it is illegal for house owners to turn their premises into business enterprises or for shops to run parallel operations outside those stipulated in their licences.
“It is illegal because businesses are given licences for what they applied to use them for,” he said.
“Anything other than the business they registered to operate is illegal.
“It is, however, difficult to enforce bylaws. There must be a complaint and the public has to identify these places and report to us because most of these shenanigans happen during the night and we might not be able to notice them.”

With the next Zimbabwean presidential election underway, we take a close look at the legacy of his administration to help inform our communities’ thinking about what’s in store for the next administration — something I will be writing about extensively in the coming weeks.
A Great Society” for the Zimbabwean people and their fellow men elsewhere was the vision of Emmerson Dambudzo MNANGAGWA. In his first years of office, he obtained passage of one of the most extensive legislative programs in the Nation’s history. Maintaining collective security, he carried on the rapidly growing struggle to maintain peace in Zimbabwe in the face of provocative forces.

MNANGAGWA made Zimbabwe self-sufficient in food. He introduced Pfumvudza
UNDER PFUMVUDZA
Sorghum adapts well under low rainfall areas normally associated with high temperatures. The drought tolerance, short season characteristics and adaptability to various soils are its main advantages.
Pfumvudza is a concept of conservation agriculture (CA) that is designed to meet food security for an average household of six members over one year. All the CA principles are applied “on time, at standard, without wastage and with joy” on a plot measuring 39m x 16m, which represents 1/16th of a hectare. This was the masterpiece in food security which MNANGAGWA oversaw.
By improving agriculture, it ensured a provision of employment in that sector.
Agricultural activities provide employment an income for 60-70 per cent of the population, supply 60 percent of the raw materials required by the industrial sector and contribute 40 percent of total export earnings. Agriculture contributes approximately 17 per cent to Zimbabwe’s GDP.
In his term of office MNANGAGWA developed infrastructure such as dams, irrigation systems, airports, border posts, bridges and roads to grow the economy.
In Mnangagwa’s term of office, the Quality of service has improved across the board. The power system has bounced back to normal unjustifiable costly, inefficient, and unreliable conditions have become a thing of the past. The state of roads, which has deteriorated to the point that Zimbabwe has become a bottleneck on the North-South transport corridor, has improved with the construction of almost all highways in Zimbabwe. Rural connectivity, which hardly existed, has improved.
Success in treating potable water and the great improvement in the water, sanitation, and garbage disposal systems has helped fight cholera. Looking ahead, Zimbabwe faces several important infrastructure developments. President Mnangagwa has increased power generation using Chinese technology to overcome US sanctions. According to Zimbabwe Power Company, the country’s power generation has recently increased to about 1 600MW from an average of below 600MW in March this year. The power utility indicated that the total power generated stood at 1 530MW. Zimbabweans have welcomed improved electricity supply across the country after Hwange Thermal Power Station started performing at its best in the last week, generating 740 megawatts, a 10-fold increase on the mere 74MW that was being generated in late February.
The increased power generation has brought joy to both domestic and industrial consumers who had been enduring long hours of load-shedding since the last quarter of 2022
His policies have ensured sufficient fuel availability, eliminating fuel queues.
He has revived key industries like CSC and ZISCO and is working on David White Head.
He commissioned Africa’s largest steel plant in Manhize.
The president has attracted foreign investment. Foreign investors may invest in any sector of the economy of Zimbabwe, save for certain classes of business reserved in favour of Zimbabwean citizens, as contained in the First Schedule to the Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Act (“IEE Act”) and the existing non-conforming measures as set out in section 3.
He has increased GDP by $10 billion since taking office.
The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Zimbabwe was worth 20.68 billion US dollars in 2022, according to official data from the World Bank. The GDP value of Zimbabwe represents 0.01 per cent of the world economy. This has seen a big growth achieved only in five years.
He achieved Zimbabwe’s first trade surplus since 2000. In recent years, Zimbabwe has seen a systemic trade surplus due to increased exports. The main export is tobacco (23 per cent of total exports). Others include gold, nickel (20 per cent), diamonds and platinum. Zimbabwe’s main trading partners are South Africa and China.
Zimbabwe has set record-breaking tobacco and wheat production.
Zimbabwe set its largest wheat harvest in 2022, which reached 375,000 tons, making the landlocked country in southern Africa a self-sufficient agricultural powerhouse, which is a unique performance on the continent.
The harvest in 2022 was 13% higher than the previous year, breaking a half-century-old record. The area sown to wheat has increased by 10%, and, above all, the state has set up a policy of distributing fertilizer and buying crops via a public body, the Grain Marketing Board, which has won over farmers. Hence, Zimbabwe no longer needs to import wheat to meet its needs, saving up to 300 million dollars in import costs. In the current context, where African countries suffer from the absence or high price of Russian and Ukrainian wheat, Zimbabwe stands out for its proactive policy. Thanks to MNANGAGWA Zimbabwe has regained its bread basket title.
President Mnangagwa is a President who listens and demonstrates tolerance, allowing for free speech. Zimbabwe underwent a Government transition ushering in the Second Republic.
As soon as President Mnangagwa assumed the seat as the Head of State and Government, he pledged to oversee a democratic Zimbabwe that would uphold basic human rights, tolerate a multiparty political system, enforce a democratic voting system, respect the rule of law, ensure democratic government and embrace citizen participation.

It boggles the mind to find blinkered individuals choosing not to see the progress slowly but surely transforming Zimbabwe. Rebuilding this country is not an event but a process that requires all hands on deck and people to think outside the box and stop politicizing every challenge.
Emmerson MNANGAGWA has empowered artisanal miners, resulting in the emergence of black-owned, black-funded gold mining companies in Zimbabwe.
In the last five years, Mnangagwa has helped create many black millionaires.
Five years is a relatively brief period, but it is easy to forget the absolute tumult that greeted President Mnangagwa as he stepped into the presidency in August 2018. The global economy was being shaken to its core.
It could have been a promising environment for a president to make substantial commitments on the global development front. And Why do we need to give him another 5 years?
He values and respects Zimbabwe’s heritage, heroes and rituals, as evident through his recognition of the Mutapa Empire and the erection of the Nehanda Shrine.
In five years, Mnangagwa has made tremendous contributions to Zimbabwe. It is not asking for too much to vote Mnangwa as your president. Give him his five years. Zimbabwe has to be a middle-income country by 2030. This is only possible with ED.

Chamisa Takes Star Rally To Midlands

By-The Nelson Chamisa-led opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has shifted its star rally to Mkoba stadium in Gweru following the ban of the same by the police in Bindura last week.

The party announced Friday that the mega rally will be held this Sunday.
This comes amid the baning of CCC rallies by the police, a development that recently prompted Police bosses to write an internal memo to district police commanders to stop the repression as it discredited the electoral process. CCC said:
It’s all systems GO for our national campaign mega-launch in Gweru on Sunday, 16 July 2023 at 10 am.
It’s going to be the biggest rally seen in Southern Africa.
All roads lead to Midlands Province this weekend as we paint the nation yellow!
The launch was initially scheduled for Bindura last Sunday but it was blocked by the Officer Commanding Bindura Police District.
Police said the venue selected by the opposition party has no access roads and water, exposing supporters to communicable diseases.
ZRP also said they were not given sufficient notice “as provided for in terms of the MOPA Act”, and advised CCC to find another venue and date for the event.

Mnangagwa Finally Signs Law That Imprisons Own Critics for 20 Years

By Farai D Hove | Barely 5 weeks into the 2023 election, President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe has signed into law the highly contentious “Patriotic Act.” The legislation, officially known as the Patriotic Zimbabweans Act, criminalizes actions deemed to be “wilfully injuring the sovereignty and national interest of Zimbabwe.” The announcement has escalated tensions within the country and drawn widespread international attention.

The signing of the bill comes despite a chorus of disapproval from human rights organizations, who have argued that the law poses a significant threat to civil liberties and freedom of speech. Critics fear that the act could be exploited to suppress dissent and stifle political opposition, thereby further eroding democratic principles in the nation.

ZEC Complaining Over Its Own Mess

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) says a litany of court cases are exerting “a lot of pressure” on the electoral body to meet specified timelines to prepare for the August 23 polls.

Addressing election observers in the capital early this week, Zec deputy chairperson Rodney Simukai Kiwa said the electoral body had been forced to delay the printing of ballot papers because of numerous pending court cases.

“Now on the issue of the ballot paper designing and printing, section 239(G) of the Constitution gives the commission the mandate to design, print and distribute ballot papers among other functions,” Kiwa said.

“The commission has commenced the exercises of designing ballot papers for all contesting National Assembly and local authority wards as well as the presidential ballot.

“The drawback, however, as you may appreciate, is the designing of the ballot papers for those constituencies where an appeal has been lodged against the rejection and acceptance of a candidate’s papers.

“We have to live with that until the court process has been done and completed. There is nothing we can do, but it puts a lot of pressure on us in terms of meeting the timelines.

“So bear that in mind. Don’t ask us why this has not been done. It is a legal process and Zec is bound to respect the law. We hope that the legal challenge is concluded as soon as possible.”

Zec is a respondent in several court challenges where political parties are querying the June 21 nomination process.

Some presidential aspirants are not happy after their nomination papers were turned down over various reasons, while independent presidential aspirant Saviour Kasukuwere has approached the Supreme Court contesting the nullification of his candidature by the High Court.

Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has filed an appeal at the Electoral Court against the nomination court’s decision to accept nomination papers for some candidates who reportedly forged signatures on their nomination forms.

In Bulawayo, 10 CCC members who were supposed to be on the provincial/metropolitan party list for council have filed an urgent court application accusing Zec of denying them a chance to submit their papers.

Zanu PF has also filed a notice to challenge a decision by Zec to accept nomination papers for opposition Bulawayo aspiring MPs after the 4pm deadline.

Pensioners Flood NSSA Offices Demanding USD

Pensioners in Bulawayo yesterday protested at the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) offices demanding that their pensions be paid in United States dollars.

NSSA authorities had to call in the police to disperse the protesters.

In separate interviews, the visibly angry pensioners said they had had enough of being paid in worthless Zimdollars.

“I got here today only to discover that we are being given $15 000 in local currency. What can we buy with this kind of money?” said one pensioner.

“These people have no respect for us and looking at the current economic situation, how are we going to survive?”

Another pensioner, who only identified himself as Sibindi, accused NSSA of corruption and misappropriating their contributions.

“Last month, we were given US$30 and today, we are getting these peanuts. What have they done with our money? We want answers,” Sibindi said.

Another pensioner said: “Most of us here have no other sources of income. We are dependent on this NSSA money and they are showing us that they do not have our interests at heart.”

Earlier this year, Public Service minister Paul Mavima said government would review pension payouts in line with movements of the exchange rate to preserve pay value.

Zanu PF Independent Candidate Pulls Out Following Death Of Minister’s Hubby

A Zanu-PF member Ndinyarei Mupukuta who was contesting the Maramba-Pfungwe National Assembly seat under an independent ticket has withdrawn his candidature citing personal reasons.

The withdrawal follows President Emmerson Mnangagwa warning to ruling party members “deploying” themselves as independent candidates.

In a statement released Thursday, Zanu-PF Treasurer General and acting secretary for legal affairs Patrick Chinamasa confirmed Mupukuta’s withdrawal.

“This is to inform the public that Ndinyarei Mupukuta a Zanu-PF cadre who had submitted nomination papers in terms of Section 46 of the Electoral Act to stand as an Independent Candidate in the Maramba-Pfungwe constituency has with effect from 11 July 2023 withdrawn his candidature.

“Attached is a copy of the withdrawal letter submitted to the provincial elections officer, Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, Mashonaland East Province,” Chinamasa said.

Mupukuta’s letter read, “Following the Proclamation by His Excellency, President E.D. Mnangagwa, I. Mupukuta Ndinyarei (47-095781Q47) submitted my nomination forms in terms of Section 46 of the Electoral Act of Zimbabwe to the Maramba Pfungwe Constituency Elections Officer at Marondera Mashonaland East Province. Consequently, I was successfully nominated, and my name was published among nominated candidates in the Government Gazette for Maramba Pfungwe Constituency as an Independent.

“However, for personal reasons, I have decided unequivocally and without any undue influence, to withdraw my candidature for the forthcoming elections. This decision is made considering Section 49 of the Electoral Act which entitles me to withdraw my nomination at any time before elections.”

Addressing Zanu-PF supporters in Magunje, Mnangagwa said members who lost in the primary elections should follow party rules.

“No one of you formed Zanu-PF party. Remember, you joined an already existing party. If you want to remain a Zanu-PF member, follow its rules. Kana ukafunga kuita pidigori, ndiwe unopidikuga muZanu-PF. Isu takakuriramo, over 64 years tiri mu Zanu-PF asi hatina kumboti Zanu-PF ndeyangu.

Murewa Villagers Speak On Tapiwa Killers Sentencing

The Murewa community has welcomed the death sentence imposed on Tafadzwa Shamba and Tapiwa Makore Senior for the brutal murder of Tapiwa Makore Junior in 2020.

Nyamutumbu Village in Murewa is just a few kilometres from Harare and this is where the innocent soul was brutally murdered for ritual purposes three years ago.

Tapiwa Makore Junior’s murder touched the hearts of many as he died at the hands of people he trusted the most.

To make matters worse, his namesake Tapiwa Senior was the one who held his legs while Shamba slit his throat without mercy.

The sentence handed down at the High Court this Wednesday brought relief to the Nyamutumbu community which has been waiting for justice to be served.

“I welcome the development and the government has done the wonderful thing. I am so excited that justice has been served today. I have no regret about those two. The sentence has brought relief and all the time I was blaming the government but today that I’m grateful that justice has been served. When Tapiwa was murdered I was traumatized, and I spent more than six months in bed but today am happy. What Tapiwa Makore Senior did is unforgivable,” expressed one of the Murewa community members.

” The sentence has brought relief to us because, since the day we had that the body parts of Tapiwa Makore Junior were found mauled by dogs, it was our prayer that one day the perpetrators be brought to book,” said another community member.

The garden which Tapiwa Junior was looking after on the fateful day has been abandoned with no one taking care of it.

Another Murehwa community member said, “Since I was born this is my first time to hear such things. It’s so sad that someone can kill a person like he is killing a cow, so we are happy with the sentence. Tapiwa and Tafadzwa must also die the same way or rot in jail.”

“We were equally expecting the high court to hand such a sentence because if they are killed, we don’t mind because they killed an innocent child and they deserve to die,” noted a community member.

Tapiwa Junior was seven years old and in Grade One at Nyamutumbu Primary School when he cruelly met his fate.

School officials and Tapiwa’s friends preferred to speak off-camera as they are still suffering from trauma.

Tapiwa Makore Junior was buried here in Murewa in 2021, a year after he was brutally murdered. It remains a mystery that his killers are not willing to reveal the whereabouts of his decapitated head, protecting the traditional healer who ought to have been with them in the dock.-ZBC News

The assailants threatened the miner’s life before robbing him of his car and a significant sum of money, leaving him traumatized and depressed. The Harrowing Robbery:
According to a reliable source, the incident took place on a fateful evening when the miner, identified as Bhekimpilo Ncube, was returning home to Trenance suburb in Bulawayo. Around 7.50pm, Ncube noticed a car tailing him, later identified as belonging to the three perpetrators: Thembani and Thandazani Dube, who were accomplices of Ncube.

As Ncube reached his home, the robbers swiftly approached him, and without hesitation, opened fire, narrowly missing him as the bullet pierced through the driver’s window and struck the dashboard. Timothy claimed that he was a victim of physical and verbal abuse, as well as demeaning insults, all because he had been unable to secure employment after an accident resulted in the loss of his job as a shop manager. In a statement, CAF said: “The official Draw of the FIFA World Cup 2026™African Preliminaries Qualifiers will be conducted on Thursday, 13 July in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

“The draw will be live on CAF digital platforms and CAFONLINE.com at 15h00 GMT (17h00 CAT) – a few hours after the 45th CAF Ordinary Assembly that will also be held in Abidjan.

“For the Draw, the Member Associations of CAF will be divided into nine (9) Groups.

“Winners of each Group will automatically qualify for the FIFA World Cup™ 2026. The four best runners-up (from the Groups) will play in a CAF Play-Off tournament. The winner of the CAF Play-Off Tournament will play in the FIFA Play-off Tournament.”

Warriors to take part in the qualifiers
Zimbabwe will be in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers draw for Africa after FIFA lifted an international ban on the country on Monday.

Police Ban CCC Chitungwiza Roadshow

By-Police in Chitungwiza has banned a campaign roadshow by CCC scheduled for the Zengeza East constituency in Chitungwiza on Thursday, 13 July.

In a letter dated 10 July 2023, addressed to CCC’s District Election Officer, S. Ngozo, the Officer Commanding Police, Chitungwiza District, Chief Superintendent S. Muguti said the notification by CCC did not meet the requirements of the law governing public gatherings. Muguti’s response to CCC reads in part:

  1. Your letter dated 08 July 2023 on the above subject is hereby acknowledged.
  2. The notification to hold a campaign roadshow /car rally in Zengeza East Constituency [Ward 13, 14, 15, 20 and 21] is prohibited.
  3. The notification does not meet the requirements of Section 7 of the MOPA.
  4. Therefore your event was not sanctioned.
    In a statement, CCC confirmed that the Police have banned their rally, saying it is the seventh rally to be banned in a single week. Reads the statement:
    The [ZRP] has once again banned our rally in Zengeza East Constituency where our MP was set to launch their election campaign. This is the seventh rally banned within a week.
    The regime’s abuse of state institutions must stop, and we call on ZEC to take action against this violation of electoral laws.
    Mr. Mnangagwa and his ZANU PF are panicking, knowing they can’t win a free and fair election.
    We will persevere and triumph regardless. Citizens are ready to confront the regime at the ballot box.
    The ban comes a few days after Police General Headquarters (PGHQ) issued an order instructing provincial commanders to clear rallies by opposition parties to make the upcoming general elections appear free and fair.

By-Top President Emmerson Mnangagwa, ally and former State Security minister Owen Ncube, has warned aspiring Members of Parliament (MPs) against garnering more votes than President Emmerson Mnangagwa in next month’s polls.

Ncube, the Zanu PF Midlands provincial secretary for security, said polling more votes than Mnangagwa, the party’s presidential candidate, was a cardinal sin they should avoid at all costs, come August 23.
Speaking in Gweru over the weekend during the Mkoba North constituency campaign launch, Ncube said Mnangagwa was the head of the train hence no Zanu PF member should get more votes than him.
“So when we are campaigning, it’s the President first, followed by the MP and then the councillor,” Ncube said.
“So our votes should go to baba (father) Mnangagwa because he is the President, the party leader and he is the head of the train. Then we vote for the MP and then the councillors.”
He added: “The President’s vote and that of the MP should not be the same. We don’t want a situation whereby the MP campaigns with his name only. Come 23 August, we are going out in our numbers and vote for President ED Mnangagwa.”
Mnangagwa scraped through with a narrow margin in the disputed 2018 polls, with reports indicating that some Zanu PF officials had tried to engineer his downfall by encouraging party members to vote for opposition MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa in the presidential race.
According to Zanu PF sources, there are fears in Mnangagwa’s camp of a bhora musango (protest vote) against the Zanu PF leader when Zimbabweans vote next month.
Bhora musango was popularised during the 2008 elections when Zanu PF supporters voted for the ruling party candidates for parliamentary seats, while rejecting the late former President Robert Mugabe for factional reasons.
Mugabe narrowly lost to the late opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai in the election, although none of them attained the 50% plus one vote to win the election.
Tsvangirai pulled out of the resultant re-run citing violence against his supporters.
Mnangagwa is battling to douse factional flames in Zanu PF following the party’s chaotic primary elections which were run by Forever Associates Zimbabwe, an organisation reportedly linked to the country’s Central Intelligence Organisation.
After the 2018 polls, Mnangagwa admitted that there were efforts to sabotage his candidacy within the party.
“I want to talk in general terms that there were those who were saying ‘vote for the MP, but as for the President, do what you think is good for you’. We know these people,” he said at a Zanu PF meeting after the polls.
In May 2018 before the elections, Mnangagwa claimed that he had unearthed a plot by his party’s disgruntled parliamentary candidates to impeach him soon after the July 30, 2018 polls. Newsday

Zimbabwe’s Propensity for a Third Military Coup in 2023 Elections

By Farai D Hove | Zimbabwe is gearing up for general elections in 2023, and there is a growing fear that the country could experience a third military coup. The incumbent president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has already staged two coups in the past five years, first removing Robert Mugabe from power in 2017 and then overthrowing the government led by Nelson Chamisa in 2018.

There are a number of factors that raise concerns about the possibility of a third coup in 2023. First, the military is still heavily involved in Zimbabwean politics. The military played a key role in both of the previous coups, and it is clear that it still has a great deal of influence over the government.

Second, Mnangagwa is facing a number of challenges ahead of the elections. The economy is in crisis, and there is widespread dissatisfaction with his government. If Mnangagwa loses the elections, it is possible that the military will intervene to prevent him from being removed from power.

Third, the political climate in Zimbabwe is increasingly polarized. The two main political parties, the ruling ZANU-PF party and the Citizens Coalition for Change, are deeply divided. This polarization could lead to violence in the run-up to the elections, which could provide an excuse for the military to intervene.

It is still too early to say whether there will be a third military coup in Zimbabwe in 2023. However, the factors listed above suggest that the possibility cannot be ruled out. If the elections are not free and fair, and if Mnangagwa loses, it is possible that the military will intervene to prevent him from being removed from power. This would be a major setback for democracy in Zimbabwe, and it would send a worrying signal to other countries in the region.

Will There Be Any Fairness?

It is difficult to say whether the 2023 elections in Zimbabwe will be fair. The country has a long history of political violence and electoral manipulation, and there is no guarantee that the next elections will be any different.

The ruling ZANU-PF party has a history of using violence to intimidate its opponents. In the run-up to the 2018 elections, there were a number of reports of ZANU-PF supporters attacking supporters. The government has also been accused of gerrymandering electoral districts to favor ZANU-PF.

The CCC has also accused the government of rigging the electoral process. In the 2018 elections, the CCC claimed that it had won the popular vote, but that the results had been rigged in favor of ZANU-PF.

It is possible that the 2023 elections will be more fair than the previous elections. The international community is closely monitoring the situation in Zimbabwe, and there is a lot of pressure on the government to ensure that the elections are free and fair.

Kasukuwere Challenges Presidential Bid Ban

By- Former Mugabe cabinet minister Saviour Kasukuwere has launched an appeal against a High Court decision to disqualify him from 

2023 presidential race.

The court yesterday disqualified Kasukuwere because he had been out of the country for over 18 months.

On Wednesday, his chief election agent and spokesperson, Jaqueline Sande, said they would “fight to the bitter end” to stop his name from being removed from presidential candidates for the August 23 election.

 Sande said:

The judgement is regrettable as it compromises the integrity of the elections.

Lots of issues are questionable and cannot be sustained by an appellate court.

We’re going to fight to the bitter end until we restore Mr. Kasukuwere’s right to participate in these elections.

On Wednesday, July 12, High Court judge Justice David Mangota delivered a ruling that granted an application by a ZANU PF activist Lovedale Mangwana who wanted Kasukuwere disqualified.

Mangwana had argued that Kasukuwere had been out of the country for a lengthy period of time and his name should be removed from the roll of voters – effectively barring him from running in the election.

The order, granted by Justice Mangota, reads in part:

Kasukuwere is interdicted from representing or holding himself out to the general public and electorate in Zimbabwe or abroad, whether physically or through any form of media, as a candidate for election to the office of president of the Republic of Zimbabwe in elections scheduled to be heard on August 23, 2023.

ZimLive reported that Kasukuwere’s Supreme Court appeal, which will be heard on an urgent basis, temporarily sets aside the High Court judgement.

Warriors to take part in the qualifiers
Zimbabwe will be in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers draw for Africa after FIFA lifted an international ban on the country on Monday.

The Southern African nation was suspended by the world football governing body in February last year for third party interference after the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) suspended the ZIFA executive, led by Felton Kamambo, for a litany of allegations, chiefly failure to account for public funds.

Arrest Mutodi

? Our MP for Bikita South, Hon. John Mupanduki, has successfully opened a case against ZANU PF member Energy Mutodi, who fired gunshots at our members during a rally at Baradzamwa Business Centre in Bikita South, Masvingo Province on July 6, 2023. Case RRB 5583028 reported on July 9th, 2023, at Bikita Police Station.

We call upon the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to take action against this criminal behavior by an aspiring MP.

USAID Enables WFP To Provide Support To Zimbabwe’s Urban Communities

HARARE –The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) welcomes a US$2 million contribution from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to support more than 2,000 vulnerable families in three urban areas over the next year. 

Under the initiative WFP will create assets and develop transformative skills that will improve vulnerable families and communities’ access to livelihood opportunities. Targeted communities will benefit from community-shared assets such as greenhouses, and income-generation activities.  As part of the programme, WFP will provide internal savings and lending (ISAL) training to boost financial literacy among participants while the youth will undertake digital and vocational skills development training

“The Urban Resilience program will improve the ability of these urban households to meet their basic food and nutrition needs while reducing the negative coping strategies, and need for urgent assistance,” said USAID Acting Mission Director Priscilla Sampil.  “This is our third round of USAID funding to the World Food Programme’s Urban Resilience Program, demonstrating the U.S. government’s commitment to tackling food insecurity and poverty in urban areas.”

Approximately 1.5 million people living in urban areas are food insecure according to latest government assessments.  People who live in urban areas have fewer opportunities for subsistence livelihoods compared to rural areas.  As a result, most urban residents live hand-to-mouth, working multiple jobs in the informal sector. Unless assistance is provided urgently, people will continue to face constraints due to economic challenges as a result of inflation and rising food costs.

“Zimbabwean cities are growing and face the challenge to provide decent livelihoods for their dwellers” said Francesca Erdelmann, WFP Representative and Country Director. “With USAID’s support we will continue supporting income generating activities, while working with national and local institutions to advance policies and social protection for the urban poor”, she added.

Since Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980, the United States has invested nearly $4.5 billion in Zimbabwe through initiatives to enhance food security, support economic resilience, improve health outcomes, and promote democratic governance. USAID’s latest contribution to WFP’s food and resilience activities in Zimbabwe brings the total contributions from the United States to over US$8.9 million this year.

Chiredzi Residents Languishing In Prison For Contravening MOPO

Eight Chiredzi residents in Zimbabwe are languishing in prison after they were denied bail following their arrest charged with contravening the provisions of the repressive Maintenance of Peace and Order (MOPO) Act last week.

Zimbabwean authorities are accused of abusing MOPO by banning the main opposition political party Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) led by Nelson Chamisa’s pre-election campaign activities.

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) reported today (11 July) that Farai Chauke (42), a lawyer at Chauke and Associates Legal Practitioners, was arrested on July 5 together with seven Chiredzi residents namely, Mollen Shonhai (27), Gladmore Gungubu (18), Kudzai Madyira (27), Charles Mungate (50), Lloyd Mushari (26), Agrippa Dhambureni (29) and Simon Hlomani (56) after some Zimbabwean Police officers threw teargas canisters at some CCC supporters, who were gathered outside Tshovani Stadium in Chiredzi in Masvingo province.

Chauke, Shonhai, Gungubu, Madyira, Mungate, Mushari, Dhambureni and Hlomani were charged with failure to comply with conditions under which a meeting is authorised as defined in section 8 (ii) of the MOPO Act.

Chamisa MPs Arrested For “Making Noise”

By James Gwati- Police in Masvingo have arrested two Citizens Coalition for Change aspiring members of parliament, Martin Mureri and Pedzisai Gasva.

Mureri wants to represent Masvingo Urban, with Gasva vying for Masvingo West parliamentary seats respectively.

The two were conducting door to door campaigns using vehicles when the police arrested them Wednesday.

The police said the two Nelson Chamisa aides were “making noise,” charged them with criminal nuisance before ordering them to pay a fine of US$30 each.

ZEC Says It Will Decide Mutodi’s Fate After Court Case

Masvingo—The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) Masvingo office says it will decide on what action to take on the aspiring Bikita South lawmaker, Energy Mutodi, after the finalisation of a criminal case in which he is being accused of discharging a firearm at a recent political gathering.

A Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) member, John Mupanduki, reported a criminal case against Mutodi for discharging a firearm at Baradzanwa Business Centre in Bikita, Masvingo, where the opposition party was conducting a rally.

Mutodi allegedly fired two shots in the air to intimidate opposition members who were gathered to be addressed by CCC leader Nelson Chamisa on 6 July.

Mupanduki, a resident of the rural Nyika business centre, successfully filed the case on the reports received book (RRB) number 5583028.

Mutodi is the outgoing parliamentary representative for Goromonzi West in Mashonaland East and announced mid-last year that he would be relocating to Masvingo.

He is a former rhumba musician, teacher and deputy minister who was considered to be close to President Emmerson Mnangagwa in the run-up to the military assisted coup that removed the now late Robert Mugabe in November 2017.

When asked if Mutodi’s case did not merit disqualification from the race, ZEC Masvingo provincial manager, Zex Pudurai, said they would wait for the courts to make a ruling.

“The issue can be handled by the multi-party liaison committee whose functions are spelt out in terms of Section 160 the Electoral Act. Anything that involves violence is handled by the police, and we will only take action after determination of the case, possibly in a court of law,” said Pudurai.

Under section 160 (c) of the Electoral Act, one of the functions of the committee is “to hear and attempt to resolve any disputes, concerns, matters or grievances relating to the electoral process, including in particular any disputes arising from allegations concerning non- compliance” with a set code of conduct.

The Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, has consistently refused to provide a comment on the matter, referring all questions to the law enforcer’s Harare-based headquarters.

NewsHub, however, established that the case is being handled by one Chiweshe, a constable, after Chief Superintendent Taurai Mambure, who is in charge of the Masvingo East policing district, initially refused to entertain the matter when it was brought to him by another CCC member, Simon Ziki.

“Whilst we were dancing to some music, the accused suddenly appeared with his convoy. He entered our venue with his vehicle, which had Zanu PF stickers, and parked his vehicles in the mid of the venue (sic).

“We tried to reason with him and he said ‘hamuite meeting pano,’ in vernacular meaning you are not going to have a meeting here,” Mupanduki’s affidavit, as recorded and signed by Constable Chiweshe, reads in part.

“The CCC members asked him why he was doing such thing and he threatened to kill anyone who dares to come closer to him. He then fired two shots and we started to run for our life (sic),” it further reads.

Mutodi dropped the phone when this journalist introduced himself, and subsequent calls on his mobile were not answered.

Senior CCC Masvingo provincial member and parliamentary aspirant, Jeffryson Chitando, said Mutodi should be disqualified from standing as a candidate.

“At the nomination court, every candidate signs a code of conduct committing to fair and non-violent contest but we are surprised that Mutodi had to go to such lengths to intimidate the people.

“He is not fit to be an MP or even councillor because he cannot adhere to the electoral law which he vowed to defend,” said Chitando.

Kasukuwere Fights On

Self-exiled former Cabinet minister Saviour Kasukuwere’s bid for the country’s presidency appears ruined after the High Court in Harare nullified his nomination.

Undaunted by the ruling, Kasukuwere’s chief election agent, lawyer Jacqueline Sande yesterday, however, immediately filed an appeal at the Supreme Court.

Posting last night on Twitter, Kasukuwere’s head of communications and stakeholder management Ali Naka said: “Breaking!!!! Notice of appeal against the High Court ruling against the leading presidential candidate in Zimbabwe has been successfully filed with the Supreme Court. This suspends the High Court Ruling. Saviour Kasukuwere is still on the ballot! Hande tione (It’s game on)!!”

Earlier in the day, Sande had said: “The absence of president Kasukuwere on the ballot will compromise the credibility of the upcoming elections.”

In a ruling read by his colleague Never Katiyo, High Court judge Justice David Mangota said Kasukuwere failed to prove why he should remain a presidential candidate.

The judge made the ruling after a Zanu-PF member, Lovedale Mangwana, approached the court seeking an order to declare a decision by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to accept Kasukuwere’s nomination papers null and void.

Mangwana said Kasukuwere’s candidature was in violation of section 91 of the Constitution because he had been out of his constituency and country for 18 consecutive months.

Kasukuwere, who was popularly known as Tyson in Zanu-PF political circles in his heyday, fled the country during the 2017 military coup which deposed the late former President Robert Mugabe and propelled Emmerson Mnangagwa to the Presidency.

In his opposing papers, Kasukuwere, through his lawyers from Mhishi Nkomo Legal Practice, denied that he had been out of the country for 18 months and demanded proof.

Kasukuwere claimed that he left the country on a temporary basis on medical grounds.

He also said he was a registered voter and was appearing on the voters roll in compliance with section 91 of the Constitution.

In his ruling, the judge said Kasukuwere had failed to provide evidence that he was out of the country on a temporary basis.

“Kasukuwere, for some inexplicable reason, snatches the onus from Mangwana to himself,” Justice Mangota said.

“He challenges Mangwana to challenge him to prove that he was out of Zimbabwe for more than 18 consecutive months. He confirms in paragraph 22.6 that he was out of Zimbabwe on a temporary basis when he went for treatment.

“He does not, however, show, as he offers to do, the date(s) that he left Zimbabwe and/or the date(s) that he returned to Zimbabwe. Nor does he attach to his notice of opposition a doctor’s report which indicates he was/is, indeed, receiving medical attention from outside Zimbabwe.”

He added: “All what he does is to depose his opposing affidavit not from Zimbabwe, but from South Africa. The observed matter confirms that, even as the application is heard, he is not in Zimbabwe and/or his constituency as well as that he will return to Zimbabwe at some future, but unknown date.”

In his founding affidavit, Mangwana argued that the Electoral Act does not allow a candidate who has been out of the country for over 18 months to contest for Presidency.

“The law is that if you are not ordinarily resident in Zimbabwe for 18 months, then you are said to have ceased to be a registered voter,” said advocate Lewis Uriri, who is representing Mangwana.

“So Mr Kasukuwere ceased by operation of law to be a registered voter and consequently ceased to be qualified to run for or to occupy the office of the President of Zimbabwe.

“So the court has declared acceptance of his nomination by the nomination court sitting at Harare invalid and consequently he cannot run for the office of the President.”

Kasukuwere faces arrest over pending cases, police have said.

Zanu-PF has also said Kasukuwere faces other criminal charges.

However, sources said there was panic in Zanu-PF over Kasukuwere’s candidature amid fears that he may split the ruling party vote.

Government Reviews Civil Servants Salaries

GOVERNMENT has reviewed civil servants’ salaries upwards after negotiations held by the National Joint Negotiating Council last week.

The civil servants’ salary issue was among others which dominated the post-cabinet media briefing presented in Harare this Tuesday by the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa.

“Cabinet received a report on the status of negotiations held by the National Joint Negotiating Council on 7 July 2023 where it was agreed that the current offer of salary adjustments as proposed by Government be effected immediately. The parties further agreed that consultations and negotiations will continue guided by the spirit of continued improvement of the welfare of the Civil Service. The decision by the parties takes cognisance of the need to afford the measures being implemented by the fiscal authorities to take effect,” said Honourable Mutsvangwa.

Cabinet also received a report on the country’s maize stocks which reveal the country has sufficient grain to carry it through to the next harvest.

“Cabinet wishes to inform the nation that as at 9 July 2023, the Grain Marketing Board had in stock a total of 204 084 metric tonnes of maize and 41 464 mt of traditional grains. Millers and stock-feed manufacturers are being allocated 27 000 mt, SILO Foods 16 000 mt per month, and an additional 10 000 mt will be sold to Rwanda. The available grain will last 5.6 months. This shows that Zimbabwe has sufficient grain to carry it through to the next season,” she added.

Three individuals, Dr Sikhulile Moyo, Ambassador Mary Mubi and Dr Agnes Mahomva as well as the Angel of Hope Foundation have been nominated for the 2023 honours and awards in recognition of their work for the country.

Cabinet has also approved the provision of title deeds to urban and peri-urban housing developments on state land.

“Cabinet considered and approved the Provision of Title Deeds to Urban and Peri-Urban Housing Developments on State and Local Authority Land, which was presented by the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Honourable Ziyambi Ziyambi, as Acting Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities.”

Some of the issues which were discussed during this week’s cabinet meeting include the lifting of Zimbabwe’s ban from international football as well as the financial support being received by micro, small, and medium enterprises to grow their businesses through the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Corporation and the Zimbabwe Women’s Micro Finance Bank.- ZBC News

Al Tai Pay Tribute To Musona

Saudi Pro League side Al Tai has paid tribute to Knowledge Musona following his departure at the end of last season.

Musona saw out his deal and moved to newly promoted Al Riyadh on a free transfer.

The Zimbabwean forward had spent two seasons at Al Tai after arriving from Belgian club Anderlecht in 2021. He was a significant figure in the squad and captained the side in his final year.

The 33-year-old scored fifteen goals and registered seventeen assists in 55 appearances in which he mostly played as a midfielder.

His biggest campaign came last term after he netted nine goals and recorded as many assists.

Mnangagwa Snatches 10 Mwonzora MPs

By- The Douglas Mwonzora, led MDC party, has lost ten parliamentarians to ZANU PF.

According to the state media, the 10 defected, citing a lack of direction and infantile politics in the country’s opposition parties.

Monday four of the 10 legislators namely; Hon Lindiwe Maphosa, Hon Memory Mbondiah, Hon Winnie Kankuni, and Hon Virginia Mafuta were received at the ZANU PF headquarters by the party’s Secretary General Obert Mpofu and the Political Commissar Mike Bimha.
Hon Maphosa, who is also the chairperson of the parliamentary portfolio committee for Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development said ZANU PF is the party of the people hence their decision to leave opposition politics.
“When I make a decision I make an informed one. As Members of Parliament and activists in our own right, we have decided to join ZANU PF from the opposition politics. Some of us with other Comrades joined the opposition in 2000 and we have been in opposition politics since then. We had a narrative as the opposition that has greatly changed and deviated from what we believed in as the youth who joined the opposition then.
“We are Zimbabweans and Zimbabwe is the only country that we have, so we have seen that some of the leaders in opposition where we are coming from are incompetent.
“There is Douglas Mwonzora who has turned MDC into something less than a burial society, in a burial society there are some activities taking place. Mwonzora is an MDC-A president who is going to an election but managed to pay his own presidential fee without MPs and councillors,” she said.
She said the MDC and CCC are two sides of the same coin.
“CCC leader Nelson Chamisa and Mwonzora were only fighting for a big chunk but it’s the same thing. We have seen it change into student activism that has no vision and they don’t know where they are going. If you look at the way they conducted their primary elections, it was a circus,” said Maphosa.
She commended ZANU PF for setting up well-oiled structures from the grassroots.
“If you look at how ZANU PF held their primary elections, we have seen young people coming up contesting for parliamentarian positions, something that is not happening in the opposition. We have said we want to see young people incorporated. We have got a party that has a direction, that has got a vision, that has structures,” she said.
Mpofu welcomed the former MDC-A legislators saying the ruling party is open for everyone to join.
“We are welcoming the comrades to the home of the revolutionary party ZANU PF. The event is historic in that it is coming at a time when the President is moving across the country uniting our people and developing our great country,” said Mpofu.
“In my capacity as the Secretary-General, on behalf of the party, on behalf of the President, and the entire leadership of ZANU PF, we welcome you with open hands. You are no longer retainees, but members of Zanu PF from now. Your coming back is slightly different from other members, since this is a team of Members of Parliament, 10 of them. You will get the same treatment as any other party member”.
The party’s national Political Commissar Mike Bimha, who presented the returning members to Mpofu said the former opposition MPs will now join the election campaign.
“Our focus is really on campaigning and therefore we would welcome you to work with us as we go through the campaigns,” said Bimha.

Chamisa Opens Case Against Mnangagwa Ally

By- The Nelson Chamisa-led CCC party has opened a police case against aspiring Zanu PF MP for Bikita South aspiring, Energy Mutodi for allegedly firing shots at opposition supporters at a rally last week.

Aspiring CCC Member of Parliament for the same constituency, John Mupanduki, opened the case.

Mutodi is the current Goromonzi West MP. 

CCC said in a statement:

Our MP for Bikita South, Hon. John Mupanduki, has successfully opened a case against ZANU PF member Energy Mutodi, who fired gunshots at our members during a rally at Baradzamwa Business Centre in Bikita South, Masvingo Province on July 6, 2023. Case RRB 5583028 was reported on July 9th, 2023, at Bikita Police Station.

We call upon the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to take action against this criminal behavior by an aspiring MP.

Mutodi’s behavior violates both the constitutional and electoral act provisions. We want elections and not war.

Mutodi, however, denied that he had fired shots at CCC supporters but did not explain what he was doing at the venue for an opposition rally. He tweeted:

I challenged Mr Chamisa’s CCC supporters to show me any wounded person from a purported shooting and they could not.

But I can show without doubt his audience was too small to be addressed by a reasonable presidential aspirant

Last week, CCC claimed that Mutodi fired gunshots at CCC members who had gathered at Baradzanwa township in Bikita awaiting party leader Nelson Chamisa’s arrival.

According to The Mirror, Mutodi allegedly besieged the venue with two trucks laden with ZANU PF supporters who threw stones at CCC supporters who were waiting party leader, Nelson Chamisa.

He was reportedly in the company of Kumbirai Ziki a Forever Associate Zimbabwe (FAZ) member in Bikita South.

Mutodi, who is an academic, author and musician, was elected the Member of Parliament for Goromonzi West, Mashonaland East Province, in the 2018 elections.

But during ZANU PF’s restructuring exercise before its Congress, Mutodi relocated to Masvingo Province from Mashonaland East where Goromonzi is situated.

Police Block Chamisa Gokwe Rally

By-Police in Gokwe have banned a Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) rally scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, at Nyaradza Grounds, Gokwe Centre.

The ban comes barely hours after Police General Headquarters (PGHQ) issued an order instructing provincial commanders to clear rallies by opposition parties to make the upcoming general elections appear free and fair.

In banning the CCC rally, ZRP Officer Commanding Gokwe District, Superintendent A. Zimbili said other political activities will be near the venue.

This means that the activities by other political parties have been given the green light to go ahead but only CCC cannot hold its rally.

In a letter dated July 10 addressed to CCC provincial administrator, Joseph Madyegwayi, Superintendent Zimbili said:

Kindly be informed that on the said date there will be political activities by other political parties, including yours at CMB (Cotton Marketing Board) Open Space opposite Madzore Bottle Store, Gokwe South which (have potential to) strain our human resources base in the event of any public disorder…

CCC national spokesperson, Fadzayi Mahere confirmed the latest development. She tweeted:

Our Gokwe South rally has been banned by [the Police] because ZANU PF is scared of [CCC]! 6 rallies were banned over a one-week period.

Chivi, Chiredzi Central, Chikombedzi, Mazowe Central, Bindura and Gokwe South. ZANU PF can never win a free and fair election in Zimbabwe!

In 2018, the then main opposition party, MDC Alliance, was allowed to campaign without hindrance but its successor, CCC has been blocked from holding rallies dozens of times since its formation over a year ago.

On 25 February 2022, ZRP banned a CCC rally in Gokwe that was to be addressed by the party’s leader Nelson Chamisa.

The letter was written by the Officer-In-Charge Gokwe District, Chief Superintendent T Chikono, to the Organising Secretary CCC Gokwe Central Constituency, Agnes Limbani Jumo, and dated 25 February. It read in part:

SUBJECT: PROHIBITION NOTICE FOR A BY-ELECTION CAMPAIGN LAUNCH

It is your submission that you intend to conduct a by-election campaign launch rally at Open Space opposite Runganga Service Station, Gokwe South on the 26th day of February 2022 from 1000 hours to 1700 hours.

Your notification has been noted and this office does have reservations due to the following:

a) Reference to our discussion conducted on the 23rd day of February 2022 at Officer Commanding Police, Gokwe District office and in accordance to Section 8[3] of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act, Chapter 11:23, in which I invited you in order to discuss the amendment of the contents of your convening notice in good faith.

b) I Indicated that I have received credible information that there is a threat that the proposed by-election campaign launch rally will result in serious disruption of vehicular or pedestrian traffic, injury to participants attending the rally or other person, or extensive damage to property or public disorder since there shall also be a ZANU PF rally in Kwekwe on the same day and times since participants are going to utilise the same Kwekwe-Gokwe highway.

c) The police will not be able to provide adequate protection for the persons participating in the by-elections campaign launch since the police officers have been deployed to cover the star rally in Kwekwe District.

d) Based on the above so as to ensure the prevention of injury to persons or damage to property and in accordance with the provisions of Section 8[9] of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act, Chapter 11:23, I have issued a prohibition notice and allowed you to defer your by-elections campaign launch to another date.

Mnangagwa Aide Predicts Bhora Musango

By-Top President Emmerson Mnangagwa, ally and former State Security minister Owen Ncube, has predicted bhora musango in the next month’s elections.

Mudha, as he is known in Zanu PF warned aspiring Members of Parliament (MPs) against garnering more votes than President Emmerson Mnangagwa in next month’s polls.

Ncube, the Zanu PF Midlands provincial secretary for security, said polling more votes than Mnangagwa, the party’s presidential candidate, was a cardinal sin they should avoid at all costs, come August 23.
Speaking in Gweru over the weekend during the Mkoba North constituency campaign launch, Ncube said Mnangagwa was the head of the train hence no Zanu PF member should get more votes than him.
“So when we are campaigning, it’s the President first, followed by the MP and then the councillor,” Ncube said.
“So our votes should go to baba (father) Mnangagwa because he is the President, the party leader and he is the head of the train. Then we vote for the MP and then the councillors.”
He added: “The President’s vote and that of the MP should not be the same. We don’t want a situation whereby the MP campaigns with his name only. Come 23 August, we are going out in our numbers and vote for President ED Mnangagwa.”
Mnangagwa scraped through with a narrow margin in the disputed 2018 polls, with reports indicating that some Zanu PF officials had tried to engineer his downfall by encouraging party members to vote for opposition MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa in the presidential race.
According to Zanu PF sources, there are fears in Mnangagwa’s camp of a bhora musango (protest vote) against the Zanu PF leader when Zimbabweans vote next month.
Bhora musango was popularised during the 2008 elections when Zanu PF supporters voted for the ruling party candidates for parliamentary seats, while rejecting the late former President Robert Mugabe for factional reasons.
Mugabe narrowly lost to the late opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai in the election, although none of them attained the 50% plus one vote to win the election.
Tsvangirai pulled out of the resultant re-run citing violence against his supporters.
Mnangagwa is battling to douse factional flames in Zanu PF following the party’s chaotic primary elections which were run by Forever Associates Zimbabwe, an organisation reportedly linked to the country’s Central Intelligence Organisation.
After the 2018 polls, Mnangagwa admitted that there were efforts to sabotage his candidacy within the party.
“I want to talk in general terms that there were those who were saying ‘vote for the MP, but as for the President, do what you think is good for you’. We know these people,” he said at a Zanu PF meeting after the polls.
In May 2018 before the elections, Mnangagwa claimed that he had unearthed a plot by his party’s disgruntled parliamentary candidates to impeach him soon after the July 30, 2018 polls. Newsday

10 MPs Desert Mwonzora

By- The Douglas Mwonzora, led MDC party, has lost ten parliamentarians to ZANU PF.

According to the state media, the 10 defected, citing a lack of direction and infantile politics in the country’s opposition parties.

Monday, four of the 10 legislators namely; Hon Lindiwe Maphosa, Hon Memory Mbondiah, Hon Winnie Kankuni, and Hon Virginia Mafuta were received at the ZANU PF headquarters by the party’s Secretary General Obert Mpofu and the Political Commissar Mike Bimha.
Hon Maphosa, who is also the chairperson of the parliamentary portfolio committee for Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development said ZANU PF is the party of the people hence their decision to leave opposition politics.
“When I make a decision I make an informed one. As Members of Parliament and activists in our own right, we have decided to join ZANU PF from the opposition politics. Some of us with other Comrades joined the opposition in 2000 and we have been in opposition politics since then. We had a narrative as the opposition that has greatly changed and deviated from what we believed in as the youth who joined the opposition then.
“We are Zimbabweans and Zimbabwe is the only country that we have, so we have seen that some of the leaders in opposition where we are coming from are incompetent.
“There is Douglas Mwonzora who has turned MDC into something less than a burial society, in a burial society there are some activities taking place. Mwonzora is an MDC-A president who is going to an election but managed to pay his own presidential fee without MPs and councillors,” she said.
She said the MDC and CCC are two sides of the same coin.
“CCC leader Nelson Chamisa and Mwonzora were only fighting for a big chunk but it’s the same thing. We have seen it change into student activism that has no vision and they don’t know where they are going. If you look at the way they conducted their primary elections, it was a circus,” said Maphosa.
She commended ZANU PF for setting up well-oiled structures from the grassroots.
“If you look at how ZANU PF held their primary elections, we have seen young people coming up contesting for parliamentarian positions, something that is not happening in the opposition. We have said we want to see young people incorporated. We have got a party that has a direction, that has got a vision, that has structures,” she said.
Mpofu welcomed the former MDC-A legislators saying the ruling party is open for everyone to join.
“We are welcoming the comrades to the home of the revolutionary party ZANU PF. The event is historic in that it is coming at a time when the President is moving across the country uniting our people and developing our great country,” said Mpofu.
“In my capacity as the Secretary-General, on behalf of the party, on behalf of the President, and the entire leadership of ZANU PF, we welcome you with open hands. You are no longer retainees, but members of Zanu PF from now. Your coming back is slightly different from other members, since this is a team of Members of Parliament, 10 of them. You will get the same treatment as any other party member”.
The party’s national Political Commissar Mike Bimha, who presented the returning members to Mpofu said the former opposition MPs will now join the election campaign.
“Our focus is really on campaigning and therefore we would welcome you to work with us as we go through the campaigns,” said Bimha.

Breaking News: Former Local Government Minister Savior Kasukuwere Barred from Contesting Presidential Elections in Zimbabwe

In a significant turn of events, the former Local Government Minister of Zimbabwe, Savior Kasukuwere, has been barred from participating in the upcoming presidential elections. Bikita People Are Not Benefitting From Lithium Mining: Chamisa

Opposition CCC leader Nelson Chamisa said the massive exploitation of lithium at Bikita Minerals without ploughing back both to the local community and the country at large makes his heart bleed.

He said the people of Bikita are not benefitting anything from the mine and the worst part is the dynamite explosions are causing cracks in their houses.

Addressing 10 000 supporters gathered at Mawungwa Business.

Center in Gutu South on Friday, Chamisa said it is disheartening to see the stripping
of minerals hills at Bikita by Chinese companies without benefit to the local
community.

“Our minerals are being exploited and we are benefitting nothing from them. If at all I
hear that houses in the area are cracking as a result of dynamite explosions.

Unemployment remains, poverty remains and there is no development despite the
massive exploitation of minerals,” said Chamisa.

Bikita Minerals is owned by the Chinese run Sino Mine Resource Group and it was
commissioned by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on June 17, 2022.

The mine is rocked by the smuggling of minerals with several cases before the Police
and courts.

Chamisa said when he comes into power, he will ensure that minerals are processed
in Zimbabwe and proceeds benefit the country.

ZEC Ordered To Remove Kasukuwere From Presidential Ballot Paper

The former Local Government minister Savior Kasukuwere has been barred from contesting the Presidential elections in Zimbabwe.

This follows a High Court application by a ZANU PF member, Lovedale Mangwana to block Kasukuwere from contesting for the presidency on 23 August.

In his application, argued that Kasukuwere, who is in self-imposed exile in South Africa, is not eligible to contest for the presidency having been out of the country for 18 months.

According to Section 91 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, a person qualifies to contest for election as President or Vice President if, he or she— (a)is a Zimbabwean citizen by birth or descent; (b)has attained the age of forty years; (c)is ordinarily resident in Zimbabwe; and (d)is registered as a voter.

The Constitution also disqualifies a person from election as President or Vice-President if he or she has already held office as President under this Constitution for two terms, whether continuous or not.
