By A Correspondent | A senior prison boss, Chief Sup Moses Gukurume on Saturday confirmed to ZimEye, how he participated in allegedly poisoning the jailed legislator Job Sikhala.
This followed leaked communications that suggest Sikhala was recently administered so called, slow poison.
Sikhala was imprisoned following representations he made for his client, the mother of two, Moreblessing Ali, who was killed last year May, in a case the ruling ZANU PF party has been claiming the cultural ngozi funeral statements Sikhala made were an incitement to violence.
In a phonecall with ZimEye, Gukurume voiced in confirmation that he ordered the withdrawal of Sikhala’s BP tablets. A leaked memo states this is to quicken alleged poison splattered onto the MP’s food’s effect so that he suffers a stroke or cardiac arrest.
The lengthy leaked communication is revealed by ZimEye in a broadcast on Saturday.

By-President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said corporal punishment must be allowed to instil discipline in children.
He said the younger generation was misbehaving hence the need to “slap” them to order. Speaking at the official opening of the national chiefs’ conference in Bulawayo, Mnangagwa said:
We’re here today we owe it to our forefathers who preserved our culture, our way of life that has allowed us to survive to date. So it is critically important for us the current leaders to carry ths philosophy and respect traditional knowledge, wisdom and culture to preserve our identity.
We’re fighting drug abuse because drug abuse by our young generation will destroy our culture and identity. Foreign countries will take advantage of us because we’ll have destroyed our identity. The president’s remarks come when the High Court ruled that corporal punishment is permissible if it can be proved that the intention was to discipline.
His latest remarks are a departure from his earlier stance. In 2015, Mnangagwa who was then the Vice President and Minister of Justice, championed the prohibition of corporal punishment saying it violated the Constitution which prohibited torture and other cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment.
Corporal punishment has been illegal since 2017 when the High Court nullified article 60(2) (c) of the Educational Act.
Section 68A of the Constitution outlaws corporal punishment in schools, any physical or psychological torture, or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
The law specifically bars teachers from beating schoolchildren in whatever circumstances.
In April 2019, the Constitutional Court ruled that no male juvenile convicted of any offence could be sentenced to receive corporal punishment.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has extended the special mobile voter registration by another five days from next Wednesday to March 26 following technical problems the commission is facing as a result of power supplies.
ZEC has been facing mobile registration delays because of bad weather characterised by overcast conditions affecting their solar powered registration units.
Voters have expressed happiness over the extension of the special registration exercise and said it will allow for the registration of more voters.
Mr Fredrick Matsa from Goromonzi said he was grateful that ZEC extended the registration as he wanted his son, who turned 18 early this month, to vote for the first time.
“Words cannot express how happy I am because I want my son who turns 18 on March 6 to register and vote, and experience the voting process. Because of school, he had not registered yet, but now I think with the extension he will have enough time to register,” he said.
Sunway City resident Mr Phillip Murisa also said the extension of the voter registration will allow for the registration of more voters.
“Some people could not vote because they would be tied up with work and other different commitments but the extension can allow them to vote over the weekend. This is a good move as it will increase the number of voters on the voters roll,” he said.
Similar sentiments were echoed by Epworth resident Ms Petronella Mutumhe who said: “I also think that this is a good move as it will allow more people to register to vote.”
Mrs Ida from Sunningdale concurred with Ms Mutumhe and said the extension was a good move as the primary elections had been postponed.
“The Zanu PF primary elections have been postponed so I think extending the voter registration exercise will pave way for more people to register especially those in the remote areas that were affected by the tropical storm Freddy,” she said.
ZEC chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba recently appealed to intending voters to be patient as the situation was expected to improve.
“The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission would like to inform members of the public that some technical hitches have been encountered during the recently launched mobile voter registration exercise resulting in delays at some registration centres,” she said.
“This is mainly a result of bad weather which is affecting the solar charging system of registration machines, especially where there is no grid electricity. The commission is appealing to all stakeholders to be patient as the situation is expected to improve within the next few days.
“It should also be noted that heavy rains have affected mobility in some parts of Manicaland contributing to further delays in the voter registration exercise at some centres in that province. Despite these challenges, prospective registrants are still encouraged to visit mobile voter registration centres near them on the scheduled dates.”
Justice Chigumba assured stakeholders that the Commission was doing its best to ensure that no one is prejudiced by the unforeseen circumstances. The national mobile biometric voter registration exercise began last Sunday with some people excited that they will be voting for the first time this year.
The exercise which had a budget of $24 billion and is being conducted by ZEC and its conclusion will pave way to undertake follow ups including opening the voters’ roll for public inspection which will lead to the elections.
Voters can register at any time, but during the mobile blitz, ZEC goes out of its way to bring registration units to where potential voters live and work, rather than having them travel to the fixed registration centres. Herald

The 7 senior MDC purportedly self expelled leaders filed for a declaratory under high court case number HC 987 / 2023 challenging the purported amendments of the MDC constitution.
The purported amendment stated that any party member who takes the party to court without exhausting internal remedies will have SELF EXPELLED themselves.
Mr Mwonzora failed to oppose the case and he lost it by default judgment.
High Court Judge Justice Munangati handed down the judgement. Since Mr Mwonzora wilfully failed to oppose the case, the judge ruled that no appeal could be made against the judgement.
The reason for failing to defend himself is said to be the issue of non payment of legal fees. No lawyer is willing to represent Mr Mwonzora because he has become notorious for not paying debts.
The judgement means Senator Engineer Elias Mudzuri was illegally recalled from parliament and he must be reinstated.
The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has announced that the country’s power outages could ease from March 20 when Unit 7 at the coal-fired Hwange power station will be added to the national grid.
ZESA spokesman, George Manyaya, said Hwange Unit 7 is set to begin a “synchronization process” on Monday during which it will feed power to the national grid.
Testing could last up to six weeks.
Unit 8, which is also close to completion and is expected to deliver another 300 MW, is set to come on stream in April.

Commissioning is a delicate procedure and has to be done diligently.
We’re pleased that we have conformed to the standards.
We’re also satisfied that based on tests that have been taking place since December 2022, the Hwange 7 and 8 units have been well-designed and built to world standards.
There have been challenges in the electricity supply owing to technical challenges at our power stations and Zimbabwe’s capacity to pay for imports.
The Hwange expansion project will close the demand and supply gap.
On Friday, 17 March 2023, Zimbabwe was generating 315 MW at Hwange, 241 MW at Kariba and 11 MW at the coal-powered Harare Power Station for a total of 567 MW before imports and power from independent producers.
The new unit of the Hwange power plant will lift Zimbabwe’s installed capacity to 2 400 MW, although the country continues to generate far less.
The government says the country’s peak electricity demand is 1,700 MW.Zimbabweans are currently enduring power cuts lasting up to 18 hours due to restricted generation at Kariba hydropower station, constant breakdowns of Hwange’s ageing generators and ZESA’s inability to pay for electricity imports.

In a statement the ICC said it issued warrants of arrest for two individuals in the context of the situation in Ukraine: Mr Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and Ms Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova.
Mr Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, born on 7 October 1952, President of the Russian Federation, is allegedly responsible for the war crime of unlawful deportation of population (children) and that of unlawful transfer of population (children) from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation (under articles 8(2)(a)(vii) and 8(2)(b)(viii) of the Rome Statute). The crimes were allegedly committed in Ukrainian occupied territory at least from 24 February 2022. There are reasonable grounds to believe that Mr Putin bears individual criminal responsibility for the aforementioned crimes, (i) for having committed the acts directly, jointly with others and/or through others (article 25(3)(a) of the Rome Statute), and (ii) for his failure to exercise control properly over civilian and military subordinates who committed the acts, or allowed for their commission, and who were under his effective authority and control, pursuant to superior responsibility (article 28(b) of the Rome Statute).
Ms Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, born on 25 October 1984, Commissioner for Children’s Rights in the Office of the President of the Russian Federation, is allegedly responsible for the war crime of unlawful deportation of population (children) and that of unlawful transfer of population (children) from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation (under articles 8(2)(a)(vii) and 8(2)(b)(viii) of the Rome Statute). The crimes were allegedly committed in Ukrainian occupied territory at least from 24 February 2022. There are reasonable grounds to believe that Ms Lvova-Belova bears individual criminal responsibility for the aforementioned crimes, for having committed the acts directly, jointly with others and/or through others (article 25(3)(a) of the Rome Statute).
Pre-Trial Chamber II considered, based on the Prosecution’s applications of 22 February 2023, that there are reasonable grounds to believe that each suspect bears responsibility for the war crime of unlawful deportation of population and that of unlawful transfer of population from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation, in prejudice of Ukrainian children.
The Chamber considered that the warrants are secret in order to protect victims and witnesses and also to safeguard the investigation. Nevertheless, mindful that the conduct addressed in the present situation is allegedly ongoing, and that the public awareness of the warrants may contribute to the prevention of the further commission of crimes, the Chamber considered that it is in the interests of justice to authorise the Registry to publicly disclose the existence of the warrants, the name of the suspects, the crimes for which the warrants are issued, and the modes of liability as established by the Chamber.
The abovementioned warrants of arrests were issued pursuant to the applications submitted by the Prosecution on 22 February 2023.

“A new great Zimbabwe is possible!” proclaimed Chamisa.
“In a few months, Zimbabweans head to the polls to decide on their future.
“There have been many elections before, all of which have not brought the change we desire. So, I understand why, for many of our people, voting may seem like a futile exercise. However, history tells us that nothing lasts forever.”

I am short sighted. I have been to the Optician and wear proscription glasses to give all round good vision. Of course, it would foolish of me to have done nothing about it in the hope that if I suffered long enough my eye sight would get better because “nothing lasts forever”!
We know the root causes of Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown, political chaos and the tragic and easily avoidable human suffering and deaths of the last 43 years are gross mismanagement, rampant corruption and Mafia style lawlessness fostered on the nation by this Zanu PF dictatorship. The nation has failed to remove these Zanu PF thugs from power because they have rigged elections started with the 1980 elections!
We know the disease – the Zanu PF dictatorship – and have the cure – implement the democratic reforms and stop Zanu PF rigging the elections.
The people of Zimbabwe have risked life and limb to elect Nelson Chamisa and his MDC friends on the understanding that once in power they would implement the democratic changes necessary to stop Zanu PF rigging the elections; as the party name implied, Movement for Democratic Change. After 23 years, 5 of which in the 2008 to 2013 GNU, there has not been even one meaningful democratic change implemented and hence the reason why we are still stuck with a vote rigging Zanu PF!
If there was ever any doubt that there could be any meaningful elections in Zimbabwe without implementing democratic changes first, the watershed 2008 elections made the doubts disappear like mist under the morning African sun! So, why did MDC leaders fail to implement the reforms during the 2008 to 2013 GNU when they had the golden opportunity to do so?
Chamisa and his MDC friends know that it is futile to keep participating in these flawed elections and, worse still, that doing so only serves to give Zanu PF legitimacy.
“Look, you can’t keep on participating in flawed electoral processes that serve to give big benefits to dictators such as Robert Mugabe. Mugabe has perfected the art of winning elections. So it will be very foolish for the opposition to continue legitimizing these sham elections which don’t deliver. This country will go through a serious economic crisis in 2020 caused by Zanu PF. And yet, this is the only country where a government doesn’t perform, it is encouraged by a super majority in parliament,” said Tendai Biti in a 2015 interview with Isaac Mugabi.
“So, you can’t continue subjecting Zimbabweans to processes where their hopes just get crushed.”
In the three page article, Chamisa acknowledges the importance of reforms before the 2023 elections.
“Through our representatives in Parliament, we have crafted an Electoral Amendment Bill, which is now before Parliament. This Bill carries our demands for electoral reforms: respect for the right to vote, including implementation of the diaspora vote; accessible voter registration; a credible voters’ roll; the security of polling material; the security of the vote and clear dispute mechanisms; independent and credible polling staff; transitional mechanisms; credible results management system, including allowing parallel voter tabulation; and demand for media reforms,” he wrote.
“These reforms will ensure that our country finally lays to rest the ghost of disputed elections, allowing us to finally move forward.”
Ordinarily, one would be falling off the chair with laughing if this was not such a serious matter, the prospect of Zanu PF rigging and winning these elections and extend the regime’s corrupt and tyrannical rule for another five years is unthinkable!
Chamisa is playing lip service to reform and free and fair elections. He knows that if this Amendment Bill was going to reduce Zanu PF’s carte blanche power to rig elections it would never see the light of day given Zanu PF has 2/3 majority in both chambers. Even if one was able to pressure the Zanu PF MPs and senators to pass the Bill it is naïve to think the 3 million Zimbabweans in the diaspora, for example, can be added on the voters’ roll in time to for them to vote in August, just four months away!
The truth MDC had the golden opportunity to implement the reforms during the 2008 to 2013 GNU when they were in government and had the majority in parliament and senate and had the solid backing of SADC, who was the guarantor of the Global Political Agreement. Ever since the end of the GNU Zanu PF has held all the trump cards including the certainty MDC leaders would participate no matter flawed the process got as long as they were assured of winning a few gravy train seats. As David Coltart confessed in his book MDC and now CCC leaders are participating in these flawed elections out of greed.
“The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious – withdraw from the (2013) elections,” confessed Coltart in his Book, , The Struggle Continues 50 years of Tyranny in Zimbabwe.
“The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”
Chamisa knows that Zanu PF is rigging these elections, knows that CCC’s participation will only give SADC leaders the excuse to grant Zanu PF legitimacy and thus perpetuating the people’s suffering and deaths. Chamisa and company are hell bent on participating in these elections because they are after the few gravy train seats Zanu PF is offering as bait and that is all they care about.
Of course, it is an outrage that the nation’s chances to cure itself of the curse of rigged elections and bad governance continue to be wasted, traded off for 30 pieces of silver by the men and women povo risked all to elect into power entrusted the responsibility to deliver change.
MDC/CCC will never ever implement any democratic reforms and deliver free elections. Never! The sooner the people realise this new political reality the sooner the nation can go back to demanding reforms before elections, the prerequisite to ending vote rigging and good governance.

Emelda Marizani – the Chivhu woman convicted of murdering her four daughters by slitting their throats and setting her family home on fire – will be sentenced next Friday.
Justice Munamato Mutevedzi today threw out Marizani’s defence of insanity, finding that she had failed to prove on a balance of probabilities that she was mentally disordered at the time of committing the murders.
Marizani’s statement to police and the oral testimony presented in court materially contradicted the medical evidence she submitted, which was found to be totally unreliable.
After setting the house on fire, Marizani went on to burn two of the four children beyond recognition.
She then attempted suicide by gulping a poisonous substance, and was only saved after being rushed to hospital.
When the trial opened last year, Marizani pleaded not guilty to four counts of murder. In her plea of diminished responsibility, she asserted that at the time of committing the offences she was insane.
Insanity defense is based on the assumption that at the time of the crime, the defendant was suffering from severe mental illness and therefore, was incapable of appreciating the nature of the crime and differentiating right from wrong behavior.
In Marizani’s case however, the decision went against her.The shocking nature of Marizani’s crimes, combined with the highly emotional circumstances of the trial, have caused outrage and grief across the nation.
Following the verdict, she will be sentenced next Friday.

Local authorities own schools and it is within the union’s observation that there is need for educators to be part of decision making to improve on education management.In parliament there are still notable gaps on the legislative agenda on educational interests.
The Union is open to working with teachers from all political parties and even independent candidates who adhere to a code of conduct to be shared with registered candidates.
Trust Chikohora, who is the leader of the opposition Coalition for Democrats (CODE) will lead the new alliance, called the Zimbabwe Coalition for Peace and Development (ZCPD).
Other principals of the alliance include Lucia Matibenga of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who is the vice president, Reverend Everisto Washington Chikanga from Rebuilding Zimbabwe Party (RZP) the secretary general and Peter Gava of the United Democratic People’s Party (UDPP) who is the treasurer general.
Pastor Philip Mugadza of the United Democratic Movement (UDM) is the organising secretary while Innocent Netanyahu from Straight Black Pride Zimbabwe Partnership (SBPZP) will take care of the information and publicity portfolio.
Addressing the media at the official launch of the coalition in the capital on Thursday, Chikohora said unlike other opposition political parties, some of which campaigned for the country to be slapped with economic sanctions, they would be joining the ruling ZANU PF to denounce the embargoes.
He said they would not work with the Nelson Chamisa led Citizens for Coalition Change (CCC) and the MDC-Alliance of Douglas Mwonzora since one of them was already dead while the other supported the ruinous economic sanctions that some Western countries on Zimbabwe.
Chikohora urged other political players to join their coalition and work as a team for the betterment of the people of Zimbabwe, adding the challenges bedevilling the country were a result of political polarisation amongst Zimbabweans.
“We believe that these challenges will only be solved sustainably if we come together as Zimbabweans to find each other and build our country together as a united people,” he said.
He said it was against that background that the six political parties had found each other and formed the coalition since they shared the same aspirations, principles and values.
Before the 2018 harmonised, seven political parties formed the MDC Alliance to present a united front against ZANU PF.
After the elections, President Emmerson Mnangagwa formed POLAD and invited all the candidates who he had defeated in the Presidential election to join the platform, to enable them to provide input for national development.
Citizens Coalition for Change (then MDC Alliance) leader Nelson Chamisa, who disputed the results of the Presidential elections alleging fraud although he failed to produce the evidence in court, refused to join the grouping, insisting on direct talks with President Mnangagwa.

THE World Boxing Council Super-Bantamweight clash between Kudakwashe Chiwandire and her Mexican challenger, Yamileth Mercado, which was scheduled for this Saturday hangs in the balance after Chiwandire faced visa challenges.
Chiwandire, who is the interim champion, is challenging Mercado for the World title.
Affectionately known as ‘Take Money,’ Chiwandire is expected to arrive in Mexico City this Thursday evening just two days before the scheduled bout.
At the time of broadcast, the Zimbabwean contingent had not been briefed on the connection to Chihuahua, which is the hosting city for the World title fight.
Chiwandire and her entourage only got Mexican visas this Wednesday.

ZIMBABWE has recorded at least 31 new suspected Cholera cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of suspected cases to 98 and confirmed cases to eight.
Of the 31 new suspected cholera cases recorded in the past 24 hours, 15 were reported in Centenary, 11 in Beitbridge, four in Chegutu and one in Chivi, hence bringing the cumulative number of suspected cases in the country to 98.
Among the laboratory confirmed cases recorded in the past 24 hours, were three from Centenary in Mashonaland Central Province.
The first cholera outbreak in the country in 2023 was reported in Chegutu in February.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care has since declared 17 cholera hotspots in the country and these are Buhera, Chegutu, Chikomba, Chimanimani, Chipinge, Chitungwiza, Chiredzi, Harare, Gokwe North, Marondera, Mazowe, Shamva, Mutare, Murehwa, Mwenezi, Seke and Wedza.
An estimated 41 872 confirmed cholera cases and 1 202 deaths have so far been recorded in Africa.

A 40-year-old man from Nyandeni village under chief Mathema in Gwanda North, Matabeleland South province has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife last month during a quarrel over how to use 300 Rand (US$150) that they earned from selling their farm produce.
Acting provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thandolwenkosi Moyo confirmed the incident and said the accused, Fedwell Moyo and his wife Nomathemba Msipha (27) were said to have gone to Vumbachikwe Mine to sell their goods and earned 300 Rand.
“The accused and the deceased left their home area to Vumbachikwe Mine to sell their farm produce and earned the amount of R300,” he said.

He said during the quarrel, Moyo allegedly picked up a log and started beating his wife on her feet and head.
“He then realised that his wife was now breathless and quickly buried the body in a nearby field.”
Last Sunday police received a tip off from one of the neighbours and quickly launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of the accused and retrieval of the deceased’s body.

The primary elections are now expected to be held on a date to be announced after the Politburo meets on Monday.
The US’ ambassador designate to Zimbabwe, Pamela Tremont has said multi-billion-dollar deals signed between Harare and Beijing in the past few years have allegedly oiled the elite’s expensive lifestyles at the expense of millions.
Zimbabwe and China — the world’s second biggest economy — have elevated their diplomatic ties since Harare’s fallout with western powers over 20 years ago, triggering an investor exodus and de-industrialisation.
In 2019, Chinese diplomats estimated that the world power had extended US$2,5 billion in loans, investments and grants to Zimbabwe since the diplomatic fallout in 2000.
During Tremont’s recent confirmation hearing in the US senate committee on foreign relations John Barrasso, a senator for Wyoming, asked the envoy about her views of Zimbabwe’s ties with China and what she would do to make sure the US improved its own relations with Harare.
Citing several deals, the US politician wanted to know how Tremont would also work to defuse Chinese influence in Zimbabwe, where Beijing has helped construct important infrastructure.
These include the US$553 million Kariba power station expansion in 2018.
In 2016, Chinese firms completed the US$150 million Victoria Falls International Airport expansion project, before embarking on the US$154 million Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport facelift.
The project is almost complete.
A US$200 million new parliament building was recently opened in Harare, funded by the Chinese government while the US$1,5 billion Hwange thermal power station facelift is underway.
“The NetOne Zimbabwe state owned telecoms network has received about US$239 million from China since 2013,” Barrasso said, giving the deal as one of many examples.
In response, Tremont said Zimbabwe and China had a long-standing relationship dating back to Harare’s 1970s liberation war, which ended in 1980.
“I think the difference between Chinese investments in Zimbabwe and other places in Africa is…the US$4,5 billion that we have invested in Zimbabwean people have been for the people to promote their health, defend the democratic space, improve electoral systems and increase food security,” Tremont told the hearing.
“Seven hundred thousand Zimbabweans benefited from our food security and agricultural programmes last year. It’s tremendously important in light of the food shortages brought on by Russia’s unprovoked war against Ukraine. The Chinese investments are much more for the government of Zimbabwe. The Parliament building doesn’t necessarily benefit the Zimbabwean people the way US investment does,” she said.
Tremont said China had been investing in the extractive industries all over the world, including in Zimbabwe.
She told the hearing that China and Russia comprised about 90% of the foreign direct investment in Zimbabwe’s minerals sector.
“Unfortunately, there’s very little transparency regarding the terms of those contracts. So, while I would always support private sector led growth in Zimbabwe or any country, I certainly hope the Zimbabwean government is ensuring that the Zimbabwean people are getting fair compensation for the minerals taken from their country,” she added. The draw for the final determines the ‘home’ side for administrative reasons.

Another challenge we’ve noted is the BVR Machines malfunction.
• There is a continued unprecedented breaking down of machines across the board resulting in a significant loss of man hours, almost registration centers in Harare experienced machines down times. In Ward 35 Gutu Central, for example, on the first day, the machine at Mabhugu Primary school malfunctioned and started working only at 3pm. Subsequently, only seven people were registered and disfranchising over 40 people who were in the queue. These affected people were asked to follow the ZEC registration officers to the next center following day at Mushayavanhu, where unfortunately were stuck there the while day because the machine managed to register 3 people and malfunctioned again. Such incidents were a common phenomenon, and the CCC is in the process of compiling a report of all the affected areas.
The other issue is Power crisis;
The Zesa power cuts are well known and should have been planned for.
• It is common cause that the country is in the midst of a debilitating power outages, there is a continued down time due to erratic power supply to BVR kits, the Commission has no power back up plan.

ZIMBABWE has recorded at least 31 new suspected Cholera cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of suspected cases to 98 and confirmed cases to eight.
Of the 31 new suspected cholera cases recorded in the past 24 hours, 15 were reported in Centenary, 11 in Beitbridge, four in Chegutu and one in Chivi, hence bringing the cumulative number of suspected cases in the country to 98.
Among the laboratory confirmed cases recorded in the past 24 hours, were three from Centenary in Mashonaland Central Province.
The first cholera outbreak in the country in 2023 was reported in Chegutu in February.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care has since declared 17 cholera hotspots in the country and these are Buhera, Chegutu, Chikomba, Chimanimani, Chipinge, Chitungwiza, Chiredzi, Harare, Gokwe North, Marondera, Mazowe, Shamva, Mutare, Murehwa, Mwenezi, Seke and Wedza.
An estimated 41 872 confirmed cholera cases and 1 202 deaths have so far been recorded in Africa.

THE World Boxing Council Super-Bantamweight clash between Kudakwashe Chiwandire and her Mexican challenger, Yamileth Mercado, which was scheduled for this Saturday hangs in the balance after Chiwandire faced visa challenges.
Chiwandire, who is the interim champion, is challenging Mercado for the World title.
Affectionately known as ‘Take Money,’ Chiwandire is expected to arrive in Mexico City this Thursday evening just two days before the scheduled bout.
At the time of broadcast, the Zimbabwean contingent had not been briefed on the connection to Chihuahua, which is the hosting city for the World title fight.
Chiwandire and her entourage only got Mexican visas this Wednesday.
According to the contract between the two boxers, the promoter is supported to ensure that the challenger gets visas in time and Chiwandire was supposed to be in Mexico six days before the bout.

According to the state media, the candidates include ZANU PF national chairman, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, Monica Mutsvangwa (Senator, Zimunya/Marange); Politburo deputy secretary for administration, Mike Nyambuya (Senator, Mutasa); Central Committee member, Hubert Nyanhongo (Senator, Nyanga); outgoing Buhera North MP, William Mutomba (Senator, Buhera) and Thembinkosi Chiororo (Senator, Chimanimani).
Under the Youth Quota, provincial youth
chairman, Stanley Sakupwaya (Makoni) faces a tough challenge from four other candidates – Cde Blessing Mutomba (Buhera), Cde Law Tiengane (Chimanimani), Cde Dunmore Mambondiyani (Mutare), Cde Adonieighjah Nyabadza and Cde Munashe Mabika (Chipinge).
The largest district in the country, Makoni, which has five National Assembly seats, namely Headlands, Makoni Central, Makoni North, Makoni South and Makoni West, saw 41 candidates submitting their CVs.
Makoni North has the highest number of aspiring candidates, including the sitting legislator, Cde James Munetsi; followed by Headlands which has eight candidates, among them the sitting MP, Cde Christopher Chingosho and former national youth secretary, Cde Kudzi Chipanga.
Makoni South also has eight candidates eyeing the seat that is currently occupied by Cde Misheck Mataranyika, while in Makoni Central, six candidates, among them Cde Basil Nyabadza, Cde Shepard Nyika and Cde Gilbert Muponda will fight for the party ticket to wrestle the constituency from MDC-T MP, Mr David Tekeshe.
Other candidates are Cdes Shadreck Mavhunduse, Charles Mukaronda and Denny Muchabaiwa.
The constituency with the least candidates in the district is Makoni West where the incumbent, Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister, Dr Jenfan Muswere will lock horns with Cdes Moses Ruwona and Mativenga Mhiripiri.
Eight candidates, among them Cdes Sekai Mutsvangiri, Beauty Benge, Happiness Nyakuedzwa, Lucia Chitura, Faith Mhondiwa, Agatha Mugomba, Philipa Mukoko and Redempter Gwasira are eyeing the Makoni Women’s Quota seat.
A bruising battle is on the cards in Mutare North where Politburo member, Cde Mike Madiro will battle it out with Central Committee member, Cde Admire Mahachi; former MP for the area, Cde Batsirayi Pemhenayi, Cde Sibongile Chinoera and Cde Edgar Maziwisa.
In Mutare South, the sitting legislator, Cde Jefry Ngome has to contend with a spirited challenge from Cdes Godfrey Chikosi, Godfrey Harahwa, Brian Munakamwe, Felix Mugadza, Founder Jakachira, Collen Muchayi and Tawanda Dumbarimwe.
Five candidates are vying for the Mutare West seat, among them the sitting legislator, Cde Percy Muchimwe. The Johanne Marange Apostolic Church spokesperson, Cde Nyasha Marange has also thrown his name in the hat, together with Cdes Brighton Manengureni, Headman John Mafararikwa and Thomas Munjoma.
In Mutare Central, businessman, Cde Isau Mupfumi who migrated from the former Dangamvura-Chikanga Constituency will not have a stroll in the park as he faces the only Zanu PF councillor in Mutare City Council, Cde Resistance Mundembe and Cde Pamela Razemba.
The battle of the lightweights is in Dangamvura Constituency where Cdes Clide Jani, Mwanyara Jusa and Thinkmore Muchenje are in the race to represent the party.
Other candidates include Cdes Mathew Nyashanu, Samson Matema and Cornelius Magwede (Buhera Central); Tonderai Manakira, Phillip Guyo and Amos Mukomba (Buhera North); Joseph Chinotimba, Ngonidzashe Mudekunye and Freddy Chimbari (Buhera North); Maxwell Chikwangani, Soul Nzuma, Tafadzwa Mugwadi, Wilson Nzuma and Gelly Miti (Buhera West).

By-Citizens of Mozambique are crossing the border to Zimbabwe for medication for cholera which has affected that country.
The villagers from Kadunje are currently being treated for Cholera at Chiwenga Clinic, Centenary District, Mashonaland Central Province, bordering Mozambique.
Authorities say 25 cases out of 121 suspected cases reported in Zimbabwe emanate from one village in Mozambique.
Authorities in the Ministry of Health and Child (MoHCC) of Zimbabwe say they cannot turn away Mozambican citizens from seeking cholera medication on the grounds of their nationality or migration status.
Ministry of Health National Spokesperson, Mr Donal Mujiri told HealthTimes in an interview that their mandate was to save lives. Said Mr Mujiri:
As you are aware, most Clinics that are in areas bordering Mozambique end up treating nationals from both Zimbabwe and Mozambique due to the porous nature of our borders. We cannot send patients away. As the Ministry of Health, we are mandated to treat every patient who presents with an illness at our facilities regardless of their nationality.
Mujiri added that Zimbabwe is very much prepared to deal with the cholera outbreak adding, “We are in control of the situation.”
Mozambique has to date recorded 7 720 Cholera cases, making it one of the countries in the Southern African Region with the highest number of Cholera cases after Malawi which has 36 081.
In the whole African region, 44 839 Cholera cases have been confirmed while 1 245 deaths have been recorded.
Health and Climate experts have warned that the situation in Mozambique and Malawi could worsen on the back of Tropical Cyclone Freddy which has heavily destroyed health and water infrastructure.
In Mozambique, Tropical Storm Freddy affected 44 000 people, damaged or destroyed 55 health facilities and damaged nearly 3500 km of road, according to preliminary assessments.
By-President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said corporal punishment must be allowed to instil discipline in children.
He said the younger generation was misbehaving hence the need to “slap” them to order. Speaking at the official opening of the national chiefs’ conference in Bulawayo, Mnangagwa said:
We’re here today we owe it to our forefathers who preserved our culture, our way of life that has allowed us to survive to date. So it is critically important for us the current leaders to carry ths philosophy and respect traditional knowledge, wisdom and culture to preserve our identity.
We’re fighting drug abuse because drug abuse by our young generation will destroy our culture and identity. Foreign countries will take advantage of us because we’ll have destroyed our identity. This phislosophy that children are not reprimanded in the home or cancelled at home does not work for us. Look at America, if a child is beaten, they go and report. The president’s remarks come when the High Court ruled that corporal punishment is permissible if it can be proved that the intention was to discipline.
His latest remarks are a departure from his earlier stance. In 2015, Mnangagwa who was then the Vice President and Minister of Justice, championed the prohibition of corporal punishment saying it violated the Constitution which prohibited torture and other cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment.
Corporal punishment has been illegal since 2017 when the High Court nullified article 60(2) (c) of the Educational Act.
Section 68A of the Constitution outlaws corporal punishment in schools, any physical or psychological torture, or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
The law specifically bars teachers from beating schoolchildren in whatever circumstances.
In April 2019, the Constitutional Court ruled that no male juvenile convicted of any offence could be sentenced to receive corporal punishment.
By- ZEC chairperson Priscilla Chigumba has given in to the opposition parties’ pressure and extended the final nationwide mobile biometric voter registration exercise by five days.
.The voter registration was initially set to end on 21 March, but the commission has announced that the exercise will now conclude on 26 March. In a Twitter post seen by Pindula News on 17 March, ZEC said:
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) would like to advice the public that the voter registration blitz and voter education has been extended by five days.
ZEC previously complained about recurring unscheduled power cuts which the commission said were negatively affecting the ongoing final mobile voter registration blitz at some centres.
ZEC said the situation was been worsened by the cloudy weather conditions prevailing in some parts of the country.
ZEC listed about 5 000 centres that citizens who are eligible to vote can visit to register during the mobile biometric voter registration with Bulawayo having 71 centres.
The voter registration process precedes the 2023 harmonised elections scheduled for July this year.
The ongoing process comes after President Mnangagwa last month gazetted the final delimitation report, which marks the country’s constituencies and wards.

Examples of PPE include gloves, steel-toed footwear, eye protection, protective hearing devices (earplugs, muffs), hard hats, respirators and reflective clothing.
Gloves – prevent scrapes and abrasions.
Footwear- should be water proof and a puncture proof sole.
Eye protection- prevent dirt and dust floating around the mine from going into the eyes. Also keep chemicals from splashing into the eyes.
Protective hearing devices- to prevent irreversible hearing loss from loud machines, tools and vehicles miners use
Hard hats- protect the miner from water and falling objects
Respirators- prevent from dust exposure which may cause chronic lung disease in the long run.
Reflective clothing- for workers to be recognized easily.

• There is a continued unprecedented breaking down of machines across the board resulting in a significant loss of man hours, almost registration centers in Harare experienced machines down times. In Ward 35 Gutu Central, for example, on the first day, the machine at Mabhugu Primary school malfunctioned and started working only at 3pm. Subsequently, only seven people were registered and disfranchising over 40 people who were in the queue. These affected people were asked to follow the ZEC registration officers to the next center following day at Mushayavanhu, where unfortunately were stuck there the while day because the machine managed to register 3 people and malfunctioned again. Such incidents were a common phenomenon, and the CCC is in the process of compiling a report of all the affected areas.
The other issue is Power crisis;
The Zesa power cuts are well known and should have been planned for.
• It is common cause that the country is in the midst of a debilitating power outages, there is a continued down time due to erratic power supply to BVR kits, the Commission has no power back up plan.
The small solar are being affected by cloudy weather. Serious stoppages were experienced at Gwinyai Primary School, Kuwadzana 8 Primary school and Mic Jop in Budiriro among several areas. THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) has claimed that it is not working with the ruling Zanu PF party to tilt the elections in its favour as this would affect its integrity as an independent body.
Zimbabwe expects to hold general elections in August this year.
Stakeholders have been complaining over lack of transparency by Zec on important processes like delimitation of constituency boundaries.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa is yet to proclaim dates for the elections.
In the past elections, Zec was accused of being captured by the ruling party and of working with the army to rig polls.
In a discussion with local media on Zec preparedness to manage this year’s elections on Wednesday, Zec deputy chairperson Rodney Simukai Kiwa said the commission does not support the ruling party.
“We are not supporting the ruling party; we would not allow that to happen because it will affect our integrity. It would be a disaster; the entire commission itself would not allow that to happen. In fact it’s just not possible to do that looking at how our system is set up, it’s impossible for it to interfere in our work, we continue to be independent, impartial and do what’s best for this country,” Kiwa said.
The Zec deputy chairperson also insisted that all recommendations that were raised in Parliament on the delimitation report were taken on board.

Zanu PF political commissar, Mike Bimha has announced that the party’s Primary Elections will nolonger be held tomorrow due to an overwhelming response by candidates vying to represent the party.
The primary elections are now expected to be held on a date to be announced after the Politburo meets on Monday.
A 32-year-old copper cable thief ran out of luck when he was spotted trying to pack the stolen cables, in a bushy area by a man who was conducting prayers.
Tyson Ncube from Nketa 7 was driving a White TOYOTA HILUX when the informer spotted him and tipped off the police who arrived before he could load the stolen cables into his car.
The 4 x 50m copper cables had been hidden inside a swamp near Greengables farm in Umguza by Ncube and two other suspects who are still at large.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and applauded members of the public for helping police curb copper cable theft which has resulted in some areas going for months without power.

Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) chairman Gerald Mlotshwa says he is not worried by the FIFA congress voting to uphold the suspension of Zimbabwe from the international football family.
At the 73rd FIFA congress in Rwanda yesterday, 199 of the 200 members of the world football governing body’s congress voted for Zimbabwe’s suspension to remain in place.
But Mlotshwa is unfazed by the development, saying neither the SRC nor ZIFA has approached FIFA to have the suspension lifted.
Mlotshwa insists what Zimbabwe needs right now are reforms in the administration of the game and not having the FIFA suspension lifted.
“There’s nothing new here. Neither SRC or to the best of my knowledge Zifa have approached Fifa to lift the suspension of Zimbabwe’s membership,” Mlotshwa told NewsDay.
“The focus is on reforms. Our conversations with Fifa are centered on reforms and not the lifting of Zifa’s suspension. No such formal request has been made yet. And no such formal request will be made until Zifa and SRC have agreed to the roadmap we have made previous reference to. That’s where our focus is and should be. It’s as simple as that,” he added.
To lift the suspension, FIFA is demanding the unconditional reinstatement of the Felton Kamambo-led ZIFA administration, which was suspended by the SRC, for several allegations, chief among them failure to account for public funds, last year.
Mlotshwa however, reiterated that it is no longer possible for Kamambo to be reinstated, since he was revoked by the ZIFA council during the extraordinary general meeting (EGM) held in Harare on April 23.
“It is a fact that Felton Kamambo is no longer the Zifa president, having been recalled by his own congress. It follows, logically, that the SRC is not able to reinstate him to that position. Any such attempt would, ironically, be blatantly unlawful in terms of Zifa’s current constitution as well as the Sports and Recreation Commission Act,” said Mlotshwa.
“It is most regrettable that certain legislators continue to demand that the SRC ignore the resolutions of the Zifa congress, violate Zifa’s constitution, and, incredibly, its own Act, a product of the Parliament of Zimbabwe, in reinstating Kamambo,” he added.

Harare regional magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa has today ruled that CCC deputy national chairperson Job Sikhala has a case to answer on charges of obstructing or defeating the course of justice where he is accused of hindering police investigations in the murder of Moreblessing All and the violence that ensued in Nyatsime area thereafter.
Mrs Gofa said this while dismissing Sikhala’s application for discharge at the close of the State’s case.
The court ruled that there was evidence from State witnesses that required some explanation and answers from Sikhala.
Sikhala had applied for discharge at the close of the State case saying the State had failed to prove a prima facie against him from the testimonies of its witnesses. Three State witnesses had testified during the trial. The State had opposed the application saying witnesses’ testimonies corroborated proving that Sikhala had a case to answer.

By A Correspondent- A 37 year old Murewa man has confessed that he strangled his wife to death before forcing her to drink a poisonous substance to cover up the act following a misunderstanding.
Unganai Mumhanzi of Guvava Village, under Chief Mangwende has since been arrested in connection with the death of his wife, Ellen Mazhero.
Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi, confirmed the incident.
” The suspect had made a false police report in a bid to cover up the crime.. We appeal to the public to solve any misunderstandings amicably or at least to engage community leaders or counselors to avoid such incidents,” Chazovachiyi said.
It is reported that, on March 11 at around midnight, the deceased accused her husband of having an extra marital affair resulting in an altercation.
Mumhanzi allegedly assaulted his wife until she became unconscious.
The suspect reportedly left his wife groaning and went to a neighbour in search of transport to ferry her to the hospital.
Upon returning home, the suspect found his wife already dead before forcing a poisonous substance into her mouth.
Police who attended the scene discovered that the deceased had swollen eyelids and bruises on the cheek and stomach.
They also discovered blood stained clothes belonging to the deceased.
Police then quizzed the deceased’s husband who then confessed to have strangled his wife.

By A Correspondent- A Harare family suffered a double blow when their mother died on Tuesday just days after they were evicted from a company house.
Brighton Chabayanzara, is a troubled man after his wife, Merjury Jese Chabayanzara, suddenly died on Tuesday.
Reports are that she suffered a stroke, following their eviction.
The family has been staying on the roadside since their eviction.
Family spokesperson, Melody, said they have nowhere to conduct the funeral due to their impasse with the company.c
“We are devastated following the death of my mother. She was admitted at Sally Mugabe Hospital and died yesterday (Tuesday).
“We have nowhere to conduct a decent funeral for our mother.
“My father is currently not well.
“We are trying to engage the company, but they are refusing to entertain us.”
She added: “I am worried about my father who seems to be depressed now.
“Burial arrangements are difficult to talk about since there is need for a post mortem.
“Doctors are saying my mother died of natural causes.
“We are appealing for help for our mother’s burial.”
The father, Brighton, worked for the company for 50 years.
However, the company defended itself.
“Brighton Chabayanzara was employed by Irvine’s Zimbabwe Private Limited as a driver from March 13, 1972.
“He was provided with company accommodation as a benefit of his employment at the time.
“He attained late retirement age, being 65 years of age, in 2017.
“In accordance with company policy, and by mutual agreement, he was, however, permitted to continue rendering services to the company at its discretion on the basis that he was still capable of performing his duties.
“Upon achieving the age of 70, it, however, became clear to both parties that Brighton could no longer discharge his duties satisfactorily and it was mutually agreed that he should go on retirement with effect from October 1, 2022.
His last day of employment was, therefore, September 30 last year.”
The company said Brighton was not opposed to the arrangement.

“He, however, unrealistically demanded the following as his retirement package – that the company should construct a house for him, that the company should purchase a motor vehicle for him and that a cash payment be made to him.
“The company held a meeting with Brighton and explained that his request was untenable, not only because company policy cannot support such employee demands as a termination package.
“He was also reminded at the time that during the course of his employment, he had applied for and was granted a company housing loan on March 21, 2002, to the local equivalent value of US$15 385.
“His request pertaining to the construction of a house was therefore without a moral or contractual basis.
‘It is also indicative that Brighton was, therefore, without a contractual basis.
“It is also indicative that Brighton deliberately misled the company in applying for the company housing loan as he obviously had utilised these monies for purposes other than which it was intended for.
“He then requested that he be permitted to remain in occupation of company accommodation until the end of the third school term, being December 10 last year.
“The company acceded to his request in this regard on an exceptional basis
“The (eviction) summons were given to him on January 12 this year. Brighton failed to duly file a notice of appearance to defend within a stipulated seven-day period.
“An application for default judgment was filed on the company’s behalf on January 27.
The application was granted and an order was issued by the Magistrates’ Court on January 30.”

CHIEFS have praised the Second Republic for restoring the dignity of the traditional leaders and prioritising programmes that are transforming rural livelihoods.
Traditional leaders attending the annual Chief’s Council in Bulawayo have applauded the Second Republic under the leadership of President Emmerson Mnangagwa for investing resources in infrastructure development programmes meant to improve lives in rural communities.
Deputy President of the National Chiefs Council, Chief Mtshane Khumalo said government efforts to eradicate hunger through the supply of inputs and irrigation development are well-appreciated by the traditional leadership.
“We as chiefs are happy that our President has restored our dignity and the commitment to continued support on food to those who were affected by the poor rainy season. We also thank the President for availing resources for the general development in communal areas where over 10 million people live and this is also well appreciated.
“The support in availing medical Aid to chiefs will also go a long way in ensuring that our health is improved,” he said.
Other chiefs hailed the government’s approach to rural development and the availing of vehicles to traditional leaders which enables them to easily interact with their subjects.- ZBC News

A school in Emmerson Mnangagwa’s home town, Kwekwe, collapsed in as a result of mine operations underneath. As a result, govt has permanently shut down Globe and Phoenix Primary School after 18 pupils were injured when a classroom floor collapsed into an underground mining shaft.
The incident occurred yesterday morning at 7.30AM shortly after the start of lessons.
Of the 1 500 affected pupils, 900 learners will be temporarily housed at the neighbouring Sally Mugabe Primary School while the rest will attend classes under makeshift tents that will be erected at the former Globe and Phoenix Mine offices.
All the injured pupils were treated and discharged at Kwekwe District Hospital.
Some pupils fell into the shaft while others escaped through the windows as the floor caved in.
When state media news crew visited the school yesterday, teachers and pupils were in a state of shock. Parents and guardians rushed to the school, located in the city centre after news of the incident started circulating on various social media platforms. An emergency rescue team from Zimplats Mine reacted swiftly and managed to retrieve the furniture and stationary that had plunged into the shaft following the collapse of the floor.
The news crew observed that part of the classroom floor was suspended in the air as there was nothing underneath to support it save for a tunnel, which is a product of illegal gold mining that took place at the school. The Civil Protection Unit (CPU) director Mr Nathan Nkomo visited the school to assess the situation. He also visited Sally Mugabe Primary School where the affected learners will be temporarily accommodated following the closure of Globe and Phoenix Primary School.
In an interview, Mr Nkomo said: “The primary school has been shut down permanently and that is the official position because we can’t put the lives of the learners and the teaching staff at risk,” he said.
Mr Nkomo said the 1 500 pupils will be sheltered at Sally Mugabe Primary School and the former Globe and Phoenix Mine main offices.
“About 900 pupils will continue school at Sally Mugabe Primary School while the rest will learn from a tent that will be erected at the former Globe and Phoenix offices. This is because we don’t want to disrupt their classes and lessons will resume on Monday,” he said.

Mr Nkomo said Government will soon identify a new site to where the school would be relocated.
“Generally, there is a need for all public buildings which include schools and Government offices in Kwekwe city centre to be re-inspected to ensure that they are safe to accommodate people,” he said.
Mr Nkomo said the classroom floor collapsed as learners were preparing to start lessons.
“I am told the teacher was not in the classroom at that particular moment when the floor collapsed. When it collapsed, some pupils including the furniture and stationery also fell into the shaft that is beneath the floor and 18 of them were injured,” he said.
“I am glad that from the doctors’ assessment, no one suffered serious injuries. They have all been treated and discharged.”
Ward 6 Councillor Mclean Nyamucherera said the collapse of the classroom floor was not a surprise since school authorities decommissioned two classroom blocks last December fearing that they would collapse due to illegal gold mining activities.
“At around 7.30 AM, there was a commotion at the school such that the headmaster thought a snake had sneaked into the classroom. Some learners were screaming and when the headmaster went to investigate, he discovered that the floor had collapsed,” he said.
Cllr Nyamucherera said some houses and council infrastructure such as roads and water valves close to Globe and Phoenix Mine are also under siege from the illegal miners.
The officer commanding police in the Midlands Province Commissioner Winston Muza said the collapse of the classroom floor was a result of underground gold mining that took place some time back.
“When this happened, there wasn’t any illegal gold mining taking place. We have been monitoring illegal mining in and around the school, and we will continue doing so to make sure no infrastructure is damaged or destroyed,” he said.
Midlands provincial mining director Engineer Tariro Ndlovu said they have approached mining companies operating in the area to dispatch their trained personnel to assist.
“Our mines inspectorate should be on the ground shortly so that they ascertain the extent of the damage and where the shafts are heading to. That way we will be able to know if there are any other places that are under threat from shafts and tunnels left by illegal gold miners,” he said.
A parent, Ms Yeukai Moyo, said it was high time the school was handed over to the Government.
“Since the school was owned by a mining company which has since left, I think it is wise that it be handed over to the Government because as it is, there is no one who is overseeing the day-to-day running of the school. We are calling upon authorities to take this matter seriously because our children are not safe,” she said.
“The affected class is Grade 5B, and my child is in Grade 5A. Since the school has hot sitting, my son also uses the same class which gave in. I thank God that he is safe, but also pray for a quick recovery to those who were injured,” she said.
Kwekwe Central legislator Judith Tobaiwa said: “The authorities should have closed this school a long time ago. This is a wakeup call and I hope they are going to close down the school and relocate it to avert another disaster.”
Local businessmen, Dr Solomon Matsa and Mr Energy Ncube have pledged to cater for all medical bills for the injured learners and assist with funds for the construction of a new school.
Kwekwe district development coordinator, Mr Fortune Mpungu recently expressed fears that the District Government offices which house the Civil Registry and his office could also cave in because of shafts underneath.

ZANU PF’s two main she-beasts, Oppah Muchinguri and Monica Mutsvangwa are bulldozing the ZANU PF primary polls uncontested – and the stage has been set in what promises to be a tough contest in the much-awaited Zanu PF primary elections to choose the candidates that will represent the ruling party in the forthcoming harmonised elections as an array of interested candidates submitted their Curricula Vitae for vetting.
The primary elections are part of the revolutionary party’s internal democracy to choose the right candidates who have the mandate of the membership to square up against the opposition parties in the watershed plebiscite expected in August this year.
The old guard, young turks and women have thrown their hats in the ring and the die has been cast in the elections which will likely see political obituaries being written to those who took the electorate down the garden path and failed to deliver on their promises during the past five years.
Some candidates adopted the “Missing Person” tag after disappearing from the political landscape soon after winning their seats during the 2018 harmonised elections.
With elections being a game of numbers, aspiring candidates this week engaged the top gear to win the hearts of voters in the cell registers which will be used as the internal poll voters’ roll.
Zanu PF national secretary for finance in the Politburo, Cde Patrick Chinamasa will supervise the elections in Manicaland.
The party’s First Secretary, President Mnangagwa has called for violence-free primary elections.
A total of 123 candidates submitted their CVs to the provincial elections directorate gunning for the 26 National Assembly slots in the province, while 13 cadres are eyeing the six senatorial seats.
In the Women’s Quota, 30 candidates submitted their CVs for the six slots allocated to the province. Five candidates below 35 years will battle it out for the single seat under the Youth Quota.
A whooping 917 CVs were received for the 260 local authorities’ seats in Manicaland.
Candidates who were uncontested include ZANU PF national chairman, Cde Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri (Women’s Quota, Mutasa); Women’s League national secretary for administration and Cde Monica Mutsvangwa (Senator, Zimunya/Marange); Politburo deputy secretary for administration, Cde Mike Nyambuya (Senator, Mutasa); Central Committee member, Cde Hubert Nyanhongo (Senator, Nyanga); outgoing Buhera North MP, Cde William Mutomba (Senator, Buhera) and Cde Thembinkosi Chiororo (Senator, Chimanimani).
Under the Youth Quota, provincial youth chairman, Cde Stanley Sakupwaya (Makoni) faces a tough challenge from four other candidates – Cde Blessing Mutomba (Buhera), Cde Law Tiengane (Chimanimani), Cde Dunmore Mambondiyani (Mutare), Cde Adonieighjah Nyabadza and Cde Munashe Mabika (Chipinge).
The largest district in the country, Makoni, which has five National Assembly seats, namely Headlands, Makoni Central, Makoni North, Makoni South and Makoni West, saw 41 candidates submitting their CVs.
Makoni North has the highest number of aspiring candidates, including the sitting legislator, Cde James Munetsi; followed by Headlands which has eight candidates, among them the sitting MP, Cde Christopher Chingosho and former national youth secretary, Cde Kudzi Chipanga.
Makoni South also has eight candidates eyeing the seat that is currently occupied by Cde Misheck Mataranyika, while in Makoni Central, six candidates, among them Cde Basil Nyabadza, Cde Shepard Nyika and Cde Gilbert Muponda will fight for the party ticket to wrestle the constituency from MDC-T MP, Mr David Tekeshe.
Other candidates are Cdes Shadreck Mavhunduse, Charles Mukaronda and Denny Muchabaiwa.
The constituency with the least candidates in the district is Makoni West where the incumbent, Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister, Dr Jenfan Muswere will lock horns with Cdes Moses Ruwona and Mativenga Mhiripiri.
Eight candidates, among them Cdes Sekai Mutsvangiri, Beauty Benge, Happiness Nyakuedzwa, Lucia Chitura, Faith Mhondiwa, Agatha Mugomba, Philipa Mukoko and Redempter Gwasira are eyeing the Makoni Women’s Quota seat.
A bruising battle is on the cards in Mutare North where Politburo member, Cde Mike Madiro will battle it out with Central Committee member, Cde Admire Mahachi; former MP for the area, Cde Batsirayi Pemhenayi, Cde Sibongile Chinoera and Cde Edgar Maziwisa.
In Mutare South, the sitting legislator, Cde Jefry Ngome has to contend with a spirited challenge from Cdes Godfrey Chikosi, Godfrey Harahwa, Brian Munakamwe, Felix Mugadza, Founder Jakachira, Collen Muchayi and Tawanda Dumbarimwe.
Five candidates are vying for the Mutare West seat, among them the sitting legislator, Cde Percy Muchimwe. The Johanne Marange Apostolic Church spokesperson, Cde Nyasha Marange has also thrown his name in the hat, together with Cdes Brighton Manengureni, Headman John Mafararikwa and Thomas Munjoma.
In Mutare Central, businessman, Cde Isau Mupfumi who migrated from the former Dangamvura-Chikanga Constituency will not have a stroll in the park as he faces the only Zanu PF councillor in Mutare City Council, Cde Resistance Mundembe and Cde Pamela Razemba.
The battle of the lightweights is in Dangamvura Constituency where Cdes Clide Jani, Mwanyara Jusa and Thinkmore Muchenje are in the race to represent the party.
Other candidates include Cdes Mathew Nyashanu, Samson Matema and Cornelius Magwede (Buhera Central); Tonderai Manakira, Phillip Guyo and Amos Mukomba (Buhera North); Joseph Chinotimba, Ngonidzashe Mudekunye and Freddy Chimbari (Buhera North); Maxwell Chikwangani, Soul Nzuma, Tafadzwa Mugwadi, Wilson Nzuma and Gelly Miti (Buhera West).
Cdes Joshua Sacco and Kelvin Macherenje will battle it out in Chimanimani East; while Cdes Nokuthula Matsikenyere, Lawrence Poperwi and Wilson Maphosa will fight for the Chimanimani West party ticket.
In Chipinge, Cdes James Simango, Simba Mwaingeni, Raymore Machingura, Dorothy Mabika, Landelani Mapungwana, Linda Mathathu are vying for Chipinge Central; Gift Nyarai, Lincoln Dhliwayo, Enock Dongo and Chipo Museri (Chipinge East); Kipani Bhila, Enock Porusingazi and Robert Nyemudzo (Chipinge South); Angeline Gata, Simon Simango and Adam Chimwamurombe (Mutema-Musikavanhu).

CHIEFS have praised the Second Republic for restoring the dignity of the traditional leaders and prioritising programmes that are transforming rural livelihoods.
Traditional leaders attending the annual Chief’s Council in Bulawayo have applauded the Second Republic under the leadership of President Emmerson Mnangagwa for investing resources in infrastructure development programmes meant to improve lives in rural communities.
Deputy President of the National Chiefs Council, Chief Mtshane Khumalo said government efforts to eradicate hunger through the supply of inputs and irrigation development are well-appreciated by the traditional leadership.
“We as chiefs are happy that our President has restored our dignity and the commitment to continued support on food to those who were affected by the poor rainy season. We also thank the President for availing resources for the general development in communal areas where over 10 million people live and this is also well appreciated.
“The support in availing medical Aid to chiefs will also go a long way in ensuring that our health is improved,” he said.

THE death toll from Tropical Storm Freddy continues to rise in southern Malawi, with 225 people now confirmed dead, while 20,000 have been displaced.

The government has declared a state of disaster in 10 districts that have been hardest hit by the storm.
Reports say the collapse of roads and bridges had hampered rescue operations, while helicopters had difficulties flying because of the heavy rains and strong winds.
Experts say climate change is making tropical storms around the world wetter, windier and more intense.

Zanu PF heavyweights Wellington Mahwende, current deputy mayor of the city of Masvingo and enigmatic business tycoon James Pande have positioned themselves to represent the turbulent party in Masvingo Urban.
The two clash in the epic Zanu PF primary polls set for Saturday.
Mahwende is accused of bribing council officials to land the post of deputy mayor while Pande is a business tycoon who secretly reaped rewards from being Emmerson Mnangagwa’s blue-eyed boy.
The two are also displaying fiery financial prowess in a bid to outdo each other.
Pande reportedly dished out USD 3000 to Zanu PF zealots on Tuesday.

A first-of-its-kind World Health Organization (WHO) Global report on sodium intake reduction shows that the world is off-track to achieve its global target of reducing sodium intake by 30% by 2025.
Sodium, an essential nutrient, increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and premature death when eaten in excess. The main source of sodium is table salt (sodium chloride), but it is also contained in other condiments such as sodium glutamate. The report shows that only 5% of WHO Member States are protected by mandatory and comprehensive sodium reduction policies and 73% of WHO Member States lack full range of implementation of such policies.
Implementing highly cost-effective sodium reduction policies could save an estimated 7 million lives globally by 2030. It is an important component of action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal target of reducing deaths from noncommunicable diseases. But today, only nine countries (Brazil, Chile, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Spain and Uruguay) have a comprehensive package of recommended policies to reduce sodium intake.
“Unhealthy diets are a leading cause of death and disease globally, and excessive sodium intake is one of the main culprits,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “This report shows that most countries are yet to adopt any mandatory sodium reduction policies, leaving their people at risk of heart attack, stroke, and other health problems. WHO calls on all countries to implement the ‘Best Buys’ for sodium reduction, and on manufacturers to implement the WHO benchmarks for sodium content in food.”
A comprehensive approach to sodium reduction includes adopting mandatory policies and WHO’s four “best buy” interventions related with sodium which greatly contribute to preventing noncommunicable diseases. These include:
Reformulating foods to contain less salt, and setting targets for the amount of sodium in foods and meals
Establishing public food procurement policies to limit salt or sodium rich foods in public institutions such as hospitals, schools, workplaces and nursing homes
Front-of-package labelling that helps consumers select products lower in sodium
Behaviour change communication and mass media campaigns to reduce salt/sodium consumption
Countries are encouraged to establish sodium content targets for processed foods, in line with the WHO Global Sodium Benchmarks and enforce them though these policies.
Mandatory sodium reduction policies are more effective, as they achieve broader coverage and safeguard against commercial interests, while providing a level playing field for food manufacturers. As part of the report, WHO developed a Sodium country score card for Member States based on the type and number of sodium reduction policies they have in place.
“This important report demonstrates that countries must work urgently to implement ambitious, mandatory, government-led sodium reduction policies to meet the global target of reducing salt consumption by 2025,” said Dr Tom Frieden, President and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives, a not-for-profit organization working with countries to prevent 100 million deaths from cardiovascular disease over 30 years. “There are proven measures that governments can implement and important innovations, such as low sodium salts. The world needs action, and now, or many more people will experience disabling or deadly—but preventable—heart attacks and strokes.”
The global average salt intake is estimated to be 10.8 grams per day, more than double the WHO recommendation of less than 5 grams of salt per day (one teaspoon). Eating too much salt makes it the top risk factor for diet and nutrition-related deaths. More evidence is emerging documenting links between high sodium intake and increased risk of other health conditions such as gastric cancer, obesity, osteoporosis and kidney disease.
WHO calls on Member States to implement sodium intake reduction policies without delay and to mitigate the harmful effects of excessive salt consumption. WHO also calls on food manufacturers to set ambitious sodium reduction targets in their products.

By- The Zanu PF government has announced that it has vetted over 200 000 new war veterans.
According to the state media following the launch of the first phase of vetting of the veterans of the liberation struggle by President Mnangagwa in 2021, 207 103 applicants registered for vetting by the end of that year, while 150 434 were vetted by the end of 2022, leaving a balance of 56 669, Defence and War Veterans Affairs Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri has said.
Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri said this in an update on the implementation of the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Act that was enacted in 2020 to provide a holistic approach to the welfare of the veterans in their respective categories.
The law recognises the four categories of the veterans of the liberation struggle as provided for by the Constitution and they are; the war veterans, ex-political prisoners, detainees and restrictees, non-combatant cadres and war collaborators.
“A total of 207 103 applicants registered for vetting in 2021 and 150 434 were vetted in 2022, leaving a balance of 56 669. Statistically this means that 72 percent of veterans of all categories were vetted, implying that another 28 percent remain outstanding,” she said.
The Minister said there were some veterans that did not register but turned up for the vetting exercise while others registered but did not turn up for vetting.
Of those vetted 121 185 were provisionally successful as their details were verified with the Registrar General’s Office and their names would soon be gazetted for a period of 30 days to allow for any representations against their accreditation.
If there’s no representations, they would be deemed accredited as Veterans of the Liberation Struggle.
She added that 29 249 were deemed not successful with 11 330 being unsuccessful on the account of age while 17 919 had inadequate personal information particularly identity documents.
The legal requirement on age is that one should have been 16 years by December 31, 1979.
Those with inadequate have been directed to provide more details to provincial and district field officers and on completion of the exercise their names will also be submitted to the RG’s office for verification.
“Those who do not meet the age criteria will be disqualified whilst those who succeed will also be gazetted. Those who meet the vetting criteria will be included on the list of the successfully vetted veterans after their names are gazetted,” Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri said.
She added that the gazetting process was not a once off process but a continuous exercise.
Two more people have died President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Gold runner, Scott Sakupwanya’s Redwing Mine in Penhalonga, Manicaland.
Scott’s Better Brands has reportedly continued conducting secret mining operations at this mine.
According to NewsDay, two more artisanal miners died on Monday.
The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) closed the mine in January over fatal accidents involving artisanal miners.
Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed that two more deaths were reported on Monday. Muzondo is quoted as saying:
Police confirm the sudden death by trapping in Penhalonga on March 13, 2023, of Hardlife Dzamiti (21) of Chiware village under Chief Nyashanu, Buhera, who entered into a mine shaft 8 metres deep. While inside, a mudslide fell into the mineshaft, trapping him.
On the same day, Joshua Ncube from Harare died of suffocation. Police said the now-deceased Ncube was in the company of Terrence Magwara in a 13-metre deep mineshaft when he developed some difficulties in breathing and died.
Mine deaths occur almost occasionally, the frequency is high because we have illegal miners who are sneaking into disused shafts. As police it is our call to those who are sneaking into the mineshafts to desist because the soils are loose because of the incessant rains.
James Mupfumi, the director of the Centre for Research and Development said they were worried about recurrent deaths at Redwing Mine. He said:
Perpetrators of slave labour in mining pits at Redwing Mine are behind gold smuggling, tax evasion and environmental degradation and loss of lives in Penhalonga and we are worried.
Centre for Natural Resource Governance director Farai Maguwu urged authorities to stop “unsafe mining that is happening at the mine.”
Sakupwanya is a ZANU PF councillor for Mabvuku Ward 21 .
By-Several schoolchildren at Globe and Phoenix Primary in Kwekwe were injured after a classroom block caved in a suspected gold claim while in class.
Massive illegal gold mining activities have occurred underneath the school grounds in Kwekwe.
President Emmerson Mnnangagwa’s terror gangs conduct most of these illegal operations.
The media have also published several stories on the dangers posed by these illegal mining activities.
Kwekwe District Development Coordinator, Mr Fortune Mpungu confirmed the incident saying the District Civil Protection Unit(CPU) was now on the ground.

Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Namibia strongly urge the captured Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to respect the constitution of the motherland by releasing the much-needed electronic voters roll to all stakeholders ahead of the crucial historic harmonized elections in July or August 2023. Zimbabweans are now tired of successive disputed elections since the new millennium. We demand that ZEC avail the roll now to give ample time for an inspection to avert breastfeeding of the ballot by the serial losers.
Social democrats who subscribe to the yellow concur with the industrious Team paChedu which unravels multiple ZEC shenanigans contributing to the contested election results in Zimbabwe every season. The vibrant IT gurus have discovered how ZEC has been bloating the voters roll with thousands of duplicated ghost voters since 2008 by simply putting artificial zeros to the IDs. Yellow revolutionaries in Namibia encourage all progressive citizens in Zimbabwe and abroad to amplify their voices demanding the voters roll as stipulated in the supreme law of the country.
It is quite infuriating that the subsequent fake IDs with counterfeit issue numbers are also part of the 2022 voters roll. Registrar General officials also confirmed that the IDs are very fake yet the remote-controlled court threw away the case submitted before it by the CCC MP for Harare North, Hon Markham. It is frustrating and senseless to participate in an already rigged election. In 2018, 200 000 people miraculously voted for ZANU-PF in 90 minutes in Mashonaland Central. There was an astounding incident where 16 polling stations had identical figures for President Nelson Chamisa and Mr. Mnangagwa.
In July or August, we anticipate that ZEC will respect the will of the citizens of which it should commence now with the release of the voters roll. Zec should desist from manipulating figures to benefit the politically inept party that has dismally failed to revamp the ailing economy. It is now imperative to put political and diplomatic pressure on the captured institution to promote free, fair, credible, and unfettered elections. It is now a public secret to all and sundry that Zec is a crime scene inhabited by criminals and fraudsters.
Citizens should come together and democratically demand the voters roll now or never. When the Honourable’s court application was disregarded, it became clear that the courts are captured and they won’t do anything to save our people from authoritarianism and state repression. ZEC can never conduct a credible election because of the sadistic role to overturn the results in favor of the violent and unpopular Harare regime. No wonder they tactfully refuse to publish the roll ahead of the harmonized elections.
All opposition political parties should unite demanding their constitutional right to access the voters roll before the watershed elections. It is useless to continue without the voters roll because it does not need rocket science to figure out the satanic role being played by ZEC to suppress the will of the people. The frantic efforts from Team paChedu to unearth rigging at ZEC should be complemented by all right-thinking citizens. Allowing ZANU-PF to continue stealing people’s voices exploiting ZEC and the Constitutional Court should come to an abrupt end.

Zanu PF heavyweights Wellington Mahwende, current deputy mayor of the city of Masvingo and enigmatic business tycoon James Pande have positioned themselves to represent the turbulent party in Masvingo Urban.
The two clash in the epic Zanu PF primary polls set for Saturday.
Mahwende is accused of bribing council officials to land the post of deputy mayor while Pande is a business tycoon who secretly reaped rewards from being Emmerson Mnangagwa’s blue-eyed boy.
The two are also displaying fiery financial prowess in a bid to outdo each other.
Pande reportedly dished out USD 3000 to Zanu PF zealots on Tuesday.
“It’s anybody’s game. Let us wait for Saturday. Let the best candidate carry the day,” a Zanu PF official said.

A classroom block at Globe and Phoenix Primary School in Kwekwe has reportedly collapsed, injuring students.

An 83-year-old Gokwe-based Roman Catholic Bishop died a day after celebrating his birthday.
Bishop Emeritus Angelo Floro died on Tuesday at Gweru General Hospital.

President of the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Bishop Paul Horan, said:
“Bishop Floro was the Bishop of Gokwe from 2000 until 2017 when he retired from active ministry.
“We pray that Bishop Floro’s soul may find repose in the bosom of God the Father whom he loved and served as pastor and shepherd.
“Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.”

The attempted murder trial of a Harare woman, accused of trying to kill her husband, got underway in Harare yesterday.
Jollie Maravanyika pleaded not guilty before regional magistrate Taurai Manuwere.
The State claimed that Maravanyika, who was married to Ally Mupamanda, was having an affair with her husband’s workmate, Ronald Ndoro.
Mupamanda was said to have returned home from work, in the afternoon one day, and Maravanyika tried to stop him from getting into the house.
Mupamanda forced his way in and found Ndoro sitting on his matrimonial bed. The two engaged in a fist fight.
During the fight, Maravanyika allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed her husband on the back and left thigh.
Ndoro fled in the process. Mupamanda told the court that he sustained deep cuts on his back.
However, Maravanyika told the court that Mupamanda was not her husband, but her estranged lover, with whom she has a child.
She told the court that he got jealous when he saw her with his workmate, whom she was doing business with.
She accused him of starting the fight and said she was forced to take the knife in self defence and stabbed him to save herself.
The trial continues on March 27.

Dear Family and Friends,
Our hearts are heavy for our neighbours in Madagascar, Mozambique and Malawi who have been repeatedly in the frontline of Cyclone Freddy for over a month as it has circled, retreated, returned and left a trail of destruction each time. Rivers of mud, houses washed away, trees uprooted, treacherous landslides and massive ravines. Mozambique has been inundated with weeks of torrential rain sweeping houses away and leaving people huddled in shelters, exhausted and traumatized. In Malawi more than 200 people are dead, hundreds are missing, many thousands displaced.
Zimbabwe was mostly spared the worst of it this time. Some eastern areas had high winds, heavy rain, and landslides. And then it got cold, unseasonably cold. When it was all but over, for us in Zimbabwe at least, I stood out under a beautiful, clear and cloudless night sky. Inky black and filled with stars: the two pointers and the Southern Cross, familiar, safe and timeless, pointing the way in front of me, the Milky Way overhead, Orion’s belt and the Seven Sisters behind me.
Looking up into the night sky there are so many memories shining back at me: lying on the lawn with friends watching for satellites in the early evening, for shooting stars as the night got later and sometimes running outside after midnight to lie on our backs and watch spectacular comet showers. Friends have gone, families have scattered and loved ones have passed but our stories from Zimbabwe are never forgotten. I find myself lingering there under the night sky, thinking about Zimbabwe and what may lie ahead for us as another election comes. I thought about the week I’d had in Zimbabwe and the beautiful, soulful people I’d met.
I thought about the Pastor who has just written a little book, a guide to love and family life, a guide for youngsters starting out into adulthood. How proud he was when I asked for a signed copy and handed over a few dollars; he knows that I know most of those dollars will go back into his endless struggle of trying to help people in a run-down, impoverished area where nothing is guaranteed, not even a meal every day. As it has been election after election here, we don’t talk politics, it’s too dangerous, we just talk life, hoping always that this short-term five year thinking of our politicians only wanting to build their mansions and enrich themselves will come to an end once and for all.
Zimbabweans continue to reap the harvest of our leaders’ years of looting and corruption, at the moment it is electricity and trying to keep up with events in Zimbabwe requires real determination to never stop watching. All day every day we are without power, and much of the night too, coming on long after we’ve gone to bed. Every morning we get up earlier and earlier trying to benefit from a brief hour or two of electricity but lately it’s gone by 4.00am and today by 3.00am. Zambia said this week they were going to switch us off over non-payment of a US$10.7 million debt. These numbers and even the reasons for them are often lost on us now as every day our thoughts are on surviving 480% inflation and where each US dollar we need now costs twelve hundred Zimbabwe dollars. Four years ago that same US dollar cost just one Zim dollar.
Trying to rescue a little snake in the swimming pool proved a fruitless exercise in the middle of the night this week. A power cut plunged me into darkness. The torch in my pocket grew dim, the snake swam and wriggled faster than I could see it or hook it out and finally I left it. At first light I returned and in one quick scoop got the snake out. I thought it was dead. Half an hour later it lay unmoving exactly where I’d put it and I bent down to nudge it. Of course it wasn’t dead, just playing dead, and it wasn’t happy with me, running like quicksilver over my fingers before disappearing into the long grass.
At the end of a long day I thought about the old man I’d met on the road to the mountains that morning and the sad news I had to give him. It had been a beautiful journey getting there: tall grass tipped with gold, a huge spider web laced with dew hanging in the mist, two little boys and a donkey cart and away in the valleys steam rising from rivers, curling and twisting as it followed the water course. My heart grew heavy as I arrived at my destination and met the old man. Tears shone in his eyes and also slipped down my cheeks as I told the old man that our mutual friend had died. She had given a life of service to Zimbabwe and always been so kind to everyone in her path, often giving her last scrap of food to someone more in need than her. You will be missed Hilary and we will watch for you in the night sky amongst the shooting stars.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s top ally Pedzisai Scott Sakupwanya’s Better Brands has reportedly continued conducting secret mining operations at Redwing Mine in Penhalonga, Manicaland, which led to two more deaths of artisanal miners on Monday.
The mine was closed in January by the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) over fatal accidents involving artisanal miners.
Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed that two more deaths were reported on Monday.
“Police confirm the sudden death by trapping in Penhalonga on March 13, 2023, of Hardlife Dzamiti (21) of Chiware village under Chief Nyashanu, Buhera, who entered into a mine shaft 8 metres deep. While inside, a mudslide fell into the mineshaft, trapping him,” Muzondo said.
“On the same day Joshua Ncube from Harare died of suffocation. Police said the now-deceased Ncube was in the company of Terrence Magwara in a 13-metre deep mineshaft when he developed some difficulties in breathing and died.”
He added: “Mine deaths occur almost occasionally, the frequency is high because we have illegal miners who are sneaking into disused shafts. As police it is our call to those who are sneaking into the mineshafts to desist because the soils are loose because of the incessant rains.”
Centre for Research and Development director James Mupfumi said they were worried about recurrent deaths at Redwing Mine.
“Perpetrators of slave labour in mining pits at Redwing Mine are behind gold smuggling, tax evasion and environmental degradation and loss of lives in Penhalonga and we are worried,” he said.
Centre for Natural Resource Governance director Farai Maguwu said: “There is unsafe mining that is happening at the mine and that should be stopped.”
Better Brands officials could not be reached for comment.
Sakupwanya is a key Zanu-PF member and is expected to help finance the ruling party’s election campaign ahead of polls later this year.

Sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the development to ZimEye which will be the Gukurahundi massacre architect’s first visit to London in over 20 years. It will also be his first to be a free man on UK soil since the UN COP26 conference when opposition protesters blocked him from drinking beer with his ZANU PF supporters in Glasgow.
The Coronation of The King and The Queen Consort will be marked with events across the country and a concert at Windsor Castle, Windsor castle announces. Their Majesties want to encourage people to spend the Coronation Weekend celebrating with friends, families and their communities.

The Coronation of The King and The Queen Consort will take place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6th May 2023.
The Service will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury and will reflect the Monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.
Their Majesties will arrive at Westminster Abbey in procession from Buckingham Palace, known as ‘The King’s Procession’.
Meanwhil, it is highly unlikely that Mnangagwa will be allowed a motorcade and he will most likely be most likely be confined to a bus like other African heads of state as was done when king Charles ascended the throne last year.

Chamisa’s remarks come after rival Douglas Mwonzora, leader of the opposition MDC-T party, filed an application at the Constitutional Court seeking nullification of the delimitation report saying it violates the constitution.
Mwonzora demanded that election dates must be announced only after the delimitation exercise has been re-done.
The CCC leader, however, told his supporters to remain focused saying the ConCourt application was another sideshow to distract and frustrate voters.

Former Highfield legislator Psychology Maziwisa is rotting in prison while compatriot Wicknell Chivayo freely chops up the rest of the USD5mln payment he defrauded the same victim, Zimbabwe Power Company.

Maziwisa is mounting a fresh appeal against his conviction and sentence for defrauding the Zimbabwe Power Company of US$6 250 in what he still argues should have been a civil case.
Maziwisa is serving an effective 42 months jail term after he was jointly convicted with former ZBC news anchor Oscar Pambuka for defrauding ZPC.
Through his lawyers, Venturas and Samkange, Maziwisa has since filed a notice of appeal after his application for condonation was granted by the High Court, which dismissed his previous appeal.
Maziwisa was initially jailed for 54 months before the magistrates court set aside 12 months of the term on condition that he paid back ZPC US$6 250 on or before January 31, 2019.
He once appealed against the conviction and sentence but it was dismissed by the High Court. The jail terms for Maziwisa and Pambuka were then confirmed.
In his fresh bid, Maziwisa said the magistrate’s court erred and misdirected itself in finding him guilty of the offence in his personal capacity when he was cited as a director representing the company, Fruitful Communications, in court papers.
He argues that the trial court failed to consider the fact that Fruitful Communications had done the work complained of and had discharged its contractual obligations, and then found Maziwisa guilty of fraud absent any intention, involvement or representations made directly and individually by him.
Maziwisa indicated that the sentence induced shock as the amount of prejudice was minimal.
He argued that the matter was civil as it contained breach of contractual agreements and remedies under civil law should have applied.-state media

She seemed to find it quite gentle.
“Over there we got to go ,
I’ll guide you a very fine walk .

I’d rather your dominion inquire.”
The woman blinked radiantly thrice.
She seemed exceptionally regular,
And her manner was strangely amused.
She wasn’t what I would call irregular,
Great courage she noticeably oozed.
Like others, she thought I was odd,
Some say I’m a bit boxed.
Still she gave me a courteous nod,
As if she thought I was plenty nobel.
So in search of my Uber we departed,
But before the driver could arrive,
The lady uttered sweetly full-hearted,
“We can meet again I believe.”
“Coffee, beer, we shall find.
You must now open your mind,
And get down Sunday to east Berlin “.
So to east Berlin Cafe I decided to go,
In search of the ally I craved.
The wind it did eerily blow.
But I felt that the day could be saved.
There only one cafe selling hot brew,
Black coffee in many shades.
There I entered to get a treat.
Coffee drinkers filled scattered from many trades.
I was greeted by a peculiar lady,
She seemed to be rather cosy
I couldn’t help thinking she might be quite witty.
I wondered if she was palaced.
Before I could open my mouth,
She whispered,
“For you, I have some beers!”
Both wanted an English bar talk.
I headed towards her, to the south chase,

By Divine Mafa | Zimbabwe has been struggling with the concept of democracy for decades. The country has witnessed rigged elections, voter intimidation, bribery, and even killings of opposition supporters. The ruling party has also been accused of using religious organizations to sway voters in their favor. This has resulted in the destruction of the country’s economy and brought about international sanctions.
Despite this, the people of Zimbabwe still yearn for democracy. However, it seems that the implementation of democracy in African countries is far more difficult than anticipated. Zimbabwe is a prime example of this. The country’s rulers have cheated elections and killed those who didn’t vote for them. They have bribed those who should vote for them and organized churches to threaten voters.
The struggle for democracy in Zimbabwe has been met with immense suffering. The country has been sanctioned by the international community, and its citizens have been subjected to violence and economic hardship. But what if Zimbabwe had a monarchy instead of a democratic government? Would the people still suffer as they do now?
Some argue that if Zimbabwe had a king, they would not have to go through the democratic process. There would be no elections, and people would not have to be forced to vote or killed for not voting. This would result in peace and stability for the country. In fact, countries like Saudi Arabia, which do not have elections, have a good relationship with the United States Of America. A protected eternity.
However, others argue that democracy is essential for the country’s growth and development. They believe that the struggle for democracy is worth it, even if it means suffering in the short term. They argue that democracy provides a platform for accountability and transparency, which is necessary for the country’s economic and social development.
In conclusion, the struggle for democracy in Zimbabwe is a complex issue that cannot be easily solved. The people of Zimbabwe want democracy, but the process of implementing it has been met with immense suffering. The idea of a monarchy as an alternative to democracy may seem tempting, but it is not a guaranteed solution. Ultimately, the people of Zimbabwe must decide what form of governance best suits their needs and aspirations.

By-Mozambique has announced visa exemption for 28 countries, mainly for tourism and business visits.
The exemption applies to visitors holding ordinary passports and allows for a 30-day stay, and it is renewable for an additional 60 days.
The model adopted by the Mozambican government is similar to the United States visa waiver programme, which also requires travellers to register on a platform for pre-screening at least 48 hours before travelling and to pay a processing fee of MZN650 (+/- £8.50).
The visa exemption announcement follows the launch of a platform in December last year that allowed prospective visitors to apply for an electronic pre-authorization to travel into the country.
Mozambique announces visa exemption for 28 countries in the wake of the introduction of the Mozambican e-Visa which reportedly has seen an increase of over 30% in the volume of travellers entering the country compared to the same period in the previous year.

The eVisa platform commits the country to respond to applications within 5 days, but general feedback places an average response at 24 hours and the few issues reported are usually created by users not uploading the required documentation.
As Mozambique announces visa exemption for 28 countries, it advances measure 13 (which proposes changes for the Visa regime) of the Economic Acceleration Measures Package (PAE) announced by President Nyusi on August 2022.
The package contained 20 reform measures aimed to deliver a path for a more competitive and more accessible country to visitors and investors alike.
The stimulus package implementation is coordinated by a delivery unit created for the effect under the country’s Ministry of Economy and Finance.

The development brought an array of explanations with some analysts accusing the opposition while others said Zimbabweans don’t need to demonstrate as the economy is doing all that for them.

By- Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) vice chairman Job Sikhala refused to speak in court on Tuesday when he appeared before a Harare magistrate.
Sikhala, the Zengeza West MP, is accused of inciting public violence and obstructing the course of justice in connection with clashes that rocked Nyatsime following the murder of activist Moreblessing Ali in June 2022.
Sikhala’s trial commenced at Rotten Row without him being represented.
According to Sikhala’s spokesperson, Freddy Michael Masarurevu, his lawyers were in the High Court and the magistrate refused postponement arguing that it cannot work with the diary of the lawyers.
Sikhala refused to speak and the court entered a not guilty plea. Said Masarurevu:

By-President Emmerson Mnangagwa handed over new cars to 38 newly installed chiefs during an annual chiefs’ conference held in Bulawayo on Wednesday.
The conference is being held under the theme, “Cultural Foundation for Community Development”.
Mnangagwa promised the traditional leaders that his administration will improve their living conditions.
He also challenged the chiefs and headman to ensure they defend their land ahead of the general elections.
The President promised the traditional leaders that the government will construct access roads to their homesteads, and provide them with medical aid cover, clean water and solar energy. CITE quoted Mnangagwa as saying:
Our voters are under you since you have come in numbers, I hope you have trust in me, if you had no trust in me you were not going to come in big numbers.
Since you have trust in the second republic, we have trust in you traditional leaders in that you have to defend our land.
You have to defend the identity and the respect of the African person.
The rest of the country’s chiefs are set to receive their cars in batches.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has arrived in Bulawayo where he will attend the 2023 National Chiefs Conference this Wednesday.
He was welcomed at the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport by cabinet ministers, senior Government officials, the ZANU PF leadership and supporters.
He will meet with 500 headmen and 290 traditional chiefs.- ZBC News
