WATCH: War Vets Quit ZANU PF

VIDEO LOADING BELOW…

We must all go together to the police cells in the same way we traveled to the warfront during Rhodesia, screamed our two war veterans, while confronting police officers near Africa Unity Square in Harare yesterday.

This country was built on top of the graves of those who sacrificed for it, exclaimed a male war vet.

Disgruntled war veterans yesterday withdrew their affiliation to the ruling Zanu PF party after they were arrested, for the second time in as many months, for protesting against poor pension stipends.
Some 40 ex-combatants were detained at Harare Central Police Station after they gathered at the Africa Unity Square to protest over the $16 000 monthly allowance they are getting from government.

Others were detained at Rhodesville and Borrowdale police stations.

Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said he was yet to get a briefing on the charges being laid against the war veterans, who are being represented by Tinashe Chinopfukutwa, Paida Saurombe and Blessing Nyamaropa of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.

This is the second time the former freedom fighters have been arrested this year. In August, nine of them were arrested for protesting at Finance minister Mthuli Ncube’s offices, demanding a review of their pension benefits.

They were, however, released at night without charge, allegedly following instructions “from the top”.

But Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) chairman Christopher Mutsvangwa immediately accused a Zanu PF faction, G40, and the MDC Alliance of inciting war veterans to protest against government.

Yesterday, the protesting ex-combatants, who are members of the War Veterans’ Welfare Pressure Group (WVWPG) and drawn from across the country’s provinces, accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government of neglecting them.

Police in riot gear stormed Africa Unity Square, where the war veterans were gathered and blocked them from submitting a petition to Mnangagwa for review of their pension earnings.

Some ex-combatants fled from the scene before arrests following a violent confrontation with the police.

WVWPG chairperson Amos Sigauke said the heroes of the armed liberation struggle were disappointed with Zanu PF as he announced the end of their “political marriage” with the ruling party.

“We are not attending (the conference) because we are not Zanu PF,” Sigauke said in reference to the ruling party’s national conference taking place in Bindura.

“We have nothing to do with Zanu PF. We are not involved in Zanu PF politics. We are not even a Zanu PF faction. Zanu PF has its own problems, which we are not concerned with.

“If there is anyone among us who wants to attend the Zanu PF rally, they can go in their own capacity.

“We are not concerned about their affairs. What we are concerned with is for government to consider our plight and review our monthly earnings. If government addresses our concerns, then you will not see us here.”

Zanu PF acting spokesperson Mike Bimha said members of the ZNLWVA were part of the party conference underway in Bindura.

“The war veterans that were allegedly protesting in town are just a few individuals with their own views detached from the position of the association which is affiliated to our party,” he said.

“The ZNLWVA is the latest wing which joined to form our party and we are working well with them. If there were issues with regards to the members’ affiliation to the party, the chairperson Comrade Mutsvangwa would have notified us.

“So far, there are no complaints as far as membership of the war veterans in Zanu PF is concerned. War veterans are part of the proceedings of the conference underway.”

Mutsvangwa yesterday refused to comment, referring questions to Defence minister Oppah Muchinguri, who was not picking calls.

ZNLWVA spokesperson Douglas Mahiya was also not reachable for comment.

Another war veteran, Obert Hazvinei Machingura from Mvurwi, however, said the former combatants were holding protests because of false promises made by Mnangagwa’s government.

“We have seen other groups, including the ruling party itself, being permitted to conduct protests, but we are being blocked,” Machingura said.

“We have gone back to the (late former Rhodesia Prime Minister Ian) Smith regime. We are not allowed to speak. Why is it so hard for the authorities to allow us to submit our petition to the President?

“We are wallowing in poverty, but we contributed immensely to the liberation of the country. Some of us lost limbs, relatives and homes to free the country, but what is the reward for that?Nothing.”

Mildred Chimurenga, who came all the way from Kwekwe, said the arrests were an indication that there was limited freedom of expression in the country under Mnangagwa.

“Government should be committed to improving our welfare the same way we dedicated our lives to the liberation of this country,” she said. “We have been reduced to beggars when we deprived ourselves of some freedoms and opportunities to enrich ourselves and chose to go to war. However, only a few are enjoying the benefits.”

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa said war veterans deserved respect. “One thing I will never do as president of Zimbabwe, I will never harass, terrorise, disrespect, victimise, disregard and forget our war veterans and liberation heroes,” he said.

“Their welfare is and shall be our top priority. All their grievances must be addressed. Stop harassing or arresting our liberation heroes.”

The ex-combatants have been a key cog in Zanu PF’s election campaigns since independence. -Newsday

Shock As Woman Beats Own Daughter To Death

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating a case in which a Budiriro woman and her sister assaulted her 11-year-old daughter to death as punishment.

Reports suggest that the 26-year old Vimbiso Muzvagwa used a cooking stick and a sandal to beat her daughter to death.

A neighbour said the now-deceased girl’s body had swelled when they went to see her. Another commented:

It was too bad. Mwana akarohwa for more than two hours ndikabvinza vakati regai ane muskanzwa asi ihh it was too much.

Another neighbour said the deceased girl was naughty but the assault was just too much.

ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident saying preliminary investigations indicate that the mother and her sister assaulted the girl as a form of punishment. He said:

We are investigating the issue but from the statements we have the mother on the same day whipped the child as a form of punishment and left and the younger sister also assaulted the child.

Corporal punishment for disciplinary purposes was banned in schools although parents still use it as a corrective measure. – ZBC

Marry Money Laundering Case Latest

Marry Mubaiwa yesterday had her trial on money laundering and externalisation charges postponed to November 2 pending medical results to ascertain whether or not she is fit to comprehend trial proceedings.

Harare magistrate Mr Lazini Ncube last week ordered the clinical medical director at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals to appoint a qualified doctor to undertake the medical examination on Mubaiwa.

She has appeared on charges of violating the Marriage Act after allegedly claiming that Vice President Constantino Chiwenga had agreed to register their marriage.

Mubaiwa is charged with allegedly externalising US$1 033 000 and laundering US$990 000. She is also facing separate charges of attempted murder and assault.

The State had set trial dates, but Mubaiwa through her lawyer Ms Beatrice Mtetwa, told the court last week that she was not fit to stand trial as she was taking mental altering drugs that make it difficult for her to stand trial.

While a doctor had certified she was physically fit to stand trial, Mr Ncube last week had to order the second examination to see if she was mentally fit.

Yesterday, Mrs Netsai Mushayabasa, appearing for the State, requested for the postponement when Mubaiwa appeared before regional magistrate Mr Noel Mupeiwa saying they were still waiting for the results of the second medical examination.

All trials can use the same results. Mubaiwa, through Ms Mtetwa, consented to the postponement.

Mr Mupeiwa rolled over the matter to November 2 when the medical results are expected to be out. –Herald

US Exposes Zanu PF Lies About Sanctions

Tinashe Sambiri|The U.S. Embassy in Harare has dismissed claims by the Harare administration that sanctions are ruining the country’s economy.

In a statement, the U.S. Embassy cited corruption and mismanagement of resources as the cause of the economic meltdown in Zimbabwe.

“Blaming sanctions is a convenient scapegoat to distract the public from the real reasons behind Zimbabwe’s economic challenges – corruption, economic mismanagement, and failure to respect human rights and uphold the rule of law. #ItsNotSanctions.”

UK Ambassador to Zimbabwe Melanie Robinson has also pointed out that the targeted measures are meant to stop human rights violations.

“I love buying Zimbabwean blueberries in the UK. UK sanctions don’t stop trade. They are about stopping human rights violations and corruption.”

Zanu PF Using Sanctions Rhetoric To Atone For Rampant Looting

Blaming targeted sanctions is a convenient scapegoat to distract the suspecting citizenry from stinking corruption, economic mismanagement and failure to respect human rights, Mdc Alliance Namibia posits.

25 October 2021

Mdc Alliance Namibia would like to categorically distance itself from Nick Mangwana’s tweet pointing to a small portion of Zanupf-sponsored economic fugitives in the streets of Namibia demonstrating against targeted sanctions on murderers and thieves in Zanupf government. It was quite exhilarating to see a fake portrait of Zimbabweans in Namibia siding with the perpetrators of our suffering. As social democrats who subscribe to the national democratic revolution led by President Advocate Nelson Chamisa, we remain clear that the economic decay in Zimbabwe is caused by senseless looting and corruption in Zanupf not targeted sanctions.

Nick Mangwana should justify or explain why Zimbabweans are poverty-stricken when they are blessed with abundant minerals resources, rich farmlands, the most perfect weather, astonishing national parks, well-educated and industrious people. The availability of these with or without targeted sanctions should equip our motherland as the economic powerhouse and the breadbasket of Southern Africa and even more famous as a tourist destination as well as business opportunity, as it once was. It is very clear to change seekers in Namibia that there are now less than 141 Zimbabwean people and companies on the U.S sanctions’ list. We comprehend that they are on the list for a good reason and they must stay there until they start respecting human rights.

It cannot be disputed that these individuals and companies on the list of targeted sanctions from the U.S and European Union have engaged in massive corruption, committed human rights abuses , and undermined Zimbabwe’s democratic process. To make the record straight on targeted sanctions, Mdc Alliance Namibia has the conviction that there is no U.S trade embargo on Zimbabwe and the same again applies to European Union imposed sanctions. Zimbabweans in Namibia are very excited to tell the whole world that targeted sanctions are not responsible for Zimbabwe falling tragically short of its potential. The fault automatically lies in catastrophic maladministration by the thugocratic Harare regime and the politically-bankrupt government’s gross abuse of its own citizens.

Furthermore, there is incontestable evidence to prove that the greatest sanctions on Zimbabwe are limitations the country imposes on itself. It is quite unbelievable and pathetic to learn that those who are blaming sanctions have placed our beloved country at number 160 out of 175 nations on Transparency International’s corruption list. Our country loses more than US$1 billion per year to stomach politicians in Zanupf government and their surrogates.

That is astronomical compared to the size of Zimbabwe’s entire economy-around US$$26 billion. We will join Zanupf in their unfounded sanctions mantra when they take fighting corruption and abuse of basic human freedoms seriously. As long as they continue dramatising their fight for corruption, we shall also move on castigating their political hypocrisy.

Moreover, the clueless Zanupf regime always says fighting corruption is fundamental but have government and government-connected perpetrators been held accountable for their stinking corruption and high levels of human butchery? NO. American companies are interested in investing in Zimbabwe but they are seriously deterred by the massive levels of corruption, economic uncertainty, and weak rule of law. ZanuPF scares investors through its suicidal policies like the 49% to 51%_implying that the investor gets less than his or her investment so investors give us a cold shoulder and turn to other promising opportunities in the region. We are calling Nick Mangwana and his desperate regime to embrace the political, electoral and economic reforms that would make it a more attractive and conducive destination.

It is on record that an American firm won the tender for the construction of the Dema Power plant in 2016,but unfortunately due to the cancerous cartel politics in Zimbabwe the satanic Zanupf regime cancelled the contract and awarded it to their ally in belly politics, Sakunda Holdings, which had not even placed a bid. There are more conspicuous examples of great graft and corruption since everyone in Zanupf has been equally affected by the corruption blight starting from the late archbishop of corruption and self-enrichment ,Robert Mugabe to the illiterate who are being condomised by the regime to demonstrate against the people’s hope.

In addition, Mdc Alliance Namibia believes that if the country’s democratic laws were unselectively applied and enforced , government coffers would be full to capacity and the economy would be once again put on a sounder footing ,tax revenue and foreign exchange would not leak from the treasury ,and the Zanupf morons would recover some of the money that has made a privileged few filthy rich. It’s not sanctions but corruption! Mdc Alliance Namibia Rundu Branch Spokesperson Robson Ruhanya reiterates. The Zimbabwe Electricity Distribution Company, a subsidiary of ZESA , paid US$4.9 million to Pito investments for transformers in 2010. The transformers were never delivered to date. Similarly, the Zimbabwe Power Company paid 196,064 Southern African Rands to York investments for gas that was never delivered and US$67,000 for coal that was never delivered.

Given the above background of unprecedented graft and corruption it becomes apparent that corruption is at the epicentre of why Zimbabweans are toiling and scattered across the globe.

It’s not sanctions ,it’s just the betrayal of the social contract. There are many perpetrators of self-aggrandisement who are walking free when our own democratic fighters suffer in prisons for being an alternative to Satan. Mdc Alliance Namibia is cognisant of the disappeared US$15 billion in 2015-16 from Marange diamond mine according to the Zanupf father of corruption and human rights abuses. More than US$2.8 billion vanished into thin air from command agriculture while US$60 million disappeared with the former health minister Obadiah Moyo who was recently acquited in the usual Catch and Release fashion. Prisca Mupfumira also harvested thousands if not millions of public funds from NSSA and she is walking scot free.

In a nutshell , Mdc Alliance Namibia’s message to Zanupf, SADC sympathisers and the illiterate victims who are being exploited is that since the desperate Harare regime has set the goal of becoming a middle-income country. To get there ,the government should fulfil its mandate of upholding the rule of law , commit to fighting corruption ,respecting human rights ,and fully implementing Zimbabwe’s 2013 constitution. ZanuPF and their enablers should know that only progress on these goals is the panacea to socio-economic prosperity and deeper engagement with the international community. It’s corruption,it’s not sanctions!

Lead Exposure: Health Effects

WHO, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), governments, civil society organizations, health partners, industry and others will organize activities and events during the eighth International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week.

This week of action is an initiative of the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint (the Lead Paint Alliance), which is jointly led by UNEP and WHO.

The primary goal of the Alliance is to promote the global phase-out of lead paint through the establishment of appropriate legally binding measures to stop the manufacture, import, export, distribution, sale and use of lead paints in every country. International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week is an opportunity to draw attention to the need for action on lead paint and other sources of lead exposure.

Objectives of International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week
raise awareness about health effects of lead exposure;
highlight the efforts of countries and partners to prevent lead exposure, particularly in children; and
urge further action to eliminate lead paint through regulatory action at country level.

Call for action
Lead exposure from paint is entirely preventable. Paints for a range of uses can be manufactured without the addition of lead compounds. WHO calls on all countries that have not yet done so to establish the necessary legally binding measures to stop the use of lead in paint.

Misfiring DeMbare Strikers Pose Challenges For Ndiraya

DYNAMOS coach Tonderai Ndiraya is worried by his misfiring strikers as they prepare for a tricky Chibuku Super Cup quarter-final clash against Black Rhinos on Sunday.

The Harare giants went unbeaten in Group 1 of the competition as they cruised to the last eight of the competition.

Their defence conceded only two goals in the 10 group stage matches, which were both own goals by Emmanuel Jalai in the two games against Caps United.

While former Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson once claimed that defence “win you titles,” Ndiraya is demanding his front men to be ruthless in front of goal if the team is to win the Chibuku Super Cup title this year.

DeMbare’s five-man strikeforce of Tinashe Makanda, Albert Eonde, Newman Sianchali, David Temwanjira and young Luke Musikiri have contributed only two of the 12 goals that the club has scored in the tournament.

Both were scored by Eonde in the matches against Herentals and Yadah.

“The way we have defended is what we want to see,” Ndiraya said.

“But I’m not happy about the creative and scoring part of the team. The creativity is not really there. We are not taking advantage of the talent that we have and of the strengths that we have in the team. We need to look for someone who can really give us that final pass.”

“We need to be consistent in terms of goalscoring. We have relied too much on our midfielders to score. Our strikers have not been consistent and we hope that they can improve and change things and apply a smash and grab mentality.”

Young Bill Antonio, who plays as a winger and midfield workhorse Shadreck Nyahwa have also scored two goals for DeMbare this season.

Ndiraya is happy with how his team has performed in the tournament so far, but says all that good work could be rendered inconsequential if the team loses against Rhinos.

“It would be sad that we have done very well so far in the tournament and fail to progress beyond the quarterfinals.”

He rested the bulk of his starters including Nyahwa, Patson Jaure, Juan Mutudza, Trevor Mavhunga and Godknows Murwira in the Sunday match against Harare City.

He claimed that some of them were a yellow card away from suspension, so he didn’t want to expose them to possible suspension in the Rhinos clash.

“We expect a very tough match, but we will have all our players in place, a huge pool of players to select the best team for that game. So, we are looking forward to it,” Ndiraya said.

“We have done really well in this tournament and I’m hoping that we can shift our focus and our mind going into the quarter-finals. We are playing one of our biggest rivals and they are also our bogey side in Black Rhinos. So, we have to prepare mentally and physically for the match so that we go through to the next round.

“The mentality has to change in the way we approach the game. There has to be a winner on the day. In the group stages, you would drop points and not really worry about it but this time around we have to get a win. How we will get the result is something else, but we have to approach that game with a very different mentality from the way we played the 10 group matches. That is a huge job to do, to train the players psychologically so that we get the mentality that we need for this game.”

Zim Schools Covid-19 Zones-Statistics

By A Correspondent- While daily Covid-19 infections have significantly declined over the past weeks, almost half of the cases recorded in the country yesterday were from schools, the latest statistics from the Ministry of Health and Child Care have shown.

This is happening at a time when the uptake of Covid-19 vaccines has also gone down drastically, casting a shadow on the government meeting its 10 million target by year-end.

“Thirty-seven (37) new cases (all local) and four (4) deaths [were] reported today (Monday),” said the Ministry of Health and Child Care in its daily Covid-19 update late yesterday.

“Seven day rolling average for new cases remains at 40. Seventeen (17) of these cases are from outbreaks in schools.”

Schools in Manicaland had nine (9) cases, Masvingo six (6), Mashonaland West and Matabeleland North recorded one (1) case each.

In Bulawayo, according to the Health Services Department, a total of 23 learning institutions have recorded Covid-19 cases since schools opened in September with most having recovered and the situation under control.

Of those, there were 12 primary schools, 10 secondary schools and one tertiary institution that recorded cases between the end of third wave and last Friday.

“As of today (Monday), Zimbabwe has recorded 132 688 cases, 127 433 recoveries and 4 673 deaths,” said the Ministry of Health and Child Care.

A total of 3 299 cases were conducted yesterday with 1.2 percent of them coming out positive.

Active cases have since gone down to 585 with the national recovery rate now at 95 percent following 135 new recoveries recorded yesterday.

“As of 24 October 2021, at 1500 hours, there were 63 hospitalised cases, new admissions 1, asymptomatic 5, mild to moderate 42, severe 13 and 3 in Intensive Care Units,” said the Ministry.

A total of 6 378 people yesterday received their first jab bringing the cumulative total to 3 275 033 while 6 193 got their second dose pushing up the cumulative figure for the fully-vaccinated to 2 545 717. CITE

SA Court Sets Trial Date For Zuma Corruption Case

BY AFP/Correspondent- A Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge has set a trial date for the former South African President Jacob Zuma’s corruption case.

Judge Piet Koen Tuesday announced the trial date after dismissing Zuma’s bid to have the chief prosecutor in his corruption case recused from the trial.
Zuma had asked to have state prosecutor Billy Downer dropped from the case, arguing that he was neither independent nor impartial.
Sitting in the High Court in the southeastern city of Pietermaritzburg, judge Piet Koen said he was not “persuaded that Mr Downer lacks the title to prosecute or should be removed as prosecutor”.
“On the evidence before me, it has not been shown that Mr Zuma’s rights to a constitutionally fair trial have been impaired, or that there is a real possibility that his rights will be impaired,” he said.
He directed Zuma and his co-accused, French arms firm Thales, back in court on April 11, 2022 for the resumption of the trial involving an arms purchase in 1999, when he was deputy president.
Zuma, who was in court to hear Koen’s decision, faces 16 counts of fraud, graft and racketeering related to the purchase of fighter jets, patrol boats and equipment from five European arms firms.
He is accused of taking bribes from one of the firms, French defence giant Thales, which has also been charged with corruption and money laundering.
Both have denied any wrongdoing.
The trial started in May after numerous postponements as Zuma’s legal team battled to have the charges dropped.
Aged 79, Zuma was in September released from prison due to ill health two months into a 15-month jail sentence for refusing to collaborate with a graft probe into his 2009-18 presidency.

Police Arrest 20 War Veterans Over Poor Pension Protest

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Harare have arrested 20 war veterans protesting against poor pensions.

Tuesday, the defiant former liberation war combatants said they were living in abject poverty while political elites were leading luxurious lives.

They said they were ready to be arrested or die for staging the protests meant to push the government to review their pensions.

They said they used to have better lives but now the situation has deteriorated. Watch the video below for more details.

They previously demonstrated in ‘defense of its people, freedoms, and the future’ after claiming that the ANC government was failing in its duty to effectively run the country.
The trend shows that some African governments are failing to address the veterans’ grievances, neither do they have sustainable plans for the welfare of war veterans.

Young Warriors To Participate In COSAFA Youth Games

The Zimbabwe Football Association has made a late request to COSAFA to be included in the Region 5 Youth Games in Maseru, Lesotho.

ZIFA had decided against sending the U17 Boys and Girls’ teams to the tournament for undisclosed reasons.

But after public disapproval, the association bowed down to pressure and made an application to be included in the games.

In a statement, COSAFA said they would include the teams despite the request submitted after the deadline.

The statement reads: “Although this request was received past the cut-off deadline for inclusion, COSAFA’s mandate in the Region 5 Youth Games is to promote youth football and provide potentially life-changing opportunities to boys and girls from all our member countries.

“In this context, we feel it would be wrong to exclude Zimbabwe and deny their players the opportunity to compete on this grand stage.”

A new draw will be held in the Boys’ Under-17 competition following the addition of Zimbabwe.

The statement continues: “Zimbabwe will be added to the Girls competition as a fifth team in the single pool, and that will remain a round-robin format.

“But given that the Boys tournament was to be played in two pools of five teams each, Zimbabwe’s entry will require a re-draw.

“The format of the competition will now be three pools, two with four teams and one with three. The draw will take place on Wednesday, October 27 at 11h00.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Objectives of International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week
raise awareness about health effects of lead exposure;
highlight the efforts of countries and partners to prevent lead exposure, particularly in children; and
urge further action to eliminate lead paint through regulatory action at country level.

Call for action
Lead exposure from paint is entirely preventable. Paints for a range of uses can be manufactured without the addition of lead compounds. WHO calls on all countries that have not yet done so to establish the necessary legally binding measures to stop the use of lead in paint.

Sanctions Are Not At All Affecting Zim’s Trade Lines – UK

“We Are Fed Up With Sanctions Rhetoric “

High Court Stays Biti Assault Trial

By Jane Mlambo| The High Court of Zimbabwe has ordered for a stay of proceedings in a case in which opposition MDC Alliance vice President Tendai Biti is facing trial for allegedly assaulting a Russian national and Pokugara Properties employee Tatiana Aleshina.

Biti approached the High Court appeal, challenging Harare Regional Magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti Guwuriro’s 13 October 2021 ruling in which she ordered trial to proceed despite the absence of his legal counsel Alec Muchadehama who was attending to another matter at the Master of High Court.

Guwuriro’s decision to proceed with trial deprived Biti of his right to legal representation.

He then filed a High Court appeal challenging Guwuriro’s decision and got an order to stop proceedings at the Magistrates court until the appeal is settled.

State Prosecutor Michael Reza desperately tried to push for the court to deliver a ruling on an application made by Biti for the recusal of Guwuriro saying they had verbally agreed that it could still be done.

But Biti’s lawyer Mitchel Mamimina from Mbizo, Muchadehama and Makoni legal practitioners insisted on following what the High Court order said and not what was agreed at an informal meeting.

Guwuriro then ruled that trial could not proceed, as the High Court order was clear in stopping all proceedings at the magistrates’ court.

Biti is accused of assaulting a Russian national Tatiana Aleshina at the Harare magistrates’ court premises last year.

Meanwhile, Biti’s High Court application has opened a pandora’s box after he revealed damning details of how Guwuriro and Reza are conniving to punish him.

In his application, Biti expressed shock that a senior magistrate and an acting deputy Prosecutor General were presiding over a mere case of assault.

“I pointed out that the First Respondent was clearly biased and further that she clearly was weaponising the law against me. I also pointed out right in her face that at times I felt like I was being prosecuted by three prosecutors herself on the bench and Mr Reza and his co-prosecutor Mr Tafara Charambira,” said Biti.

Sanctions and Corruption in Zimbabwe, the Inextricable Link

By Lloyd Msipa | On this day as Zimbabwe and the SADC Community join efforts calling on the western world to lift the two-decade economic sanctions put on Zimbabwe by western countries. It gives us an opportunity to real look back, introspect and unmask this thing we call sanctions and how they have enabled corruption to take root in Zimbabwe.

The founding president of Zimbabwe, Robert Gabriel Mugabe (May His soul continue to rest in peace) always maintained that sanctions were never imposed on Zimbabwe to ensure compliance with human rights. They were in fact a tool used by western countries to threaten little countries that threaten western interests. In Zimbabwe’s case the land reform program and the indigenisation policy.

Lloyd Msipa

Western sanctions on Zimbabwe

Are the sanctions working? Yes. They have been instrumental in impoverishing the average Zimbabwean who is not connected to those who run state institutions and have access to the gravy train. Are they targeted? Yes, they are. Zimbabwe, let us be honest and tell it like it is. If we are to carry out a lifestyle audit of those people on the targeted sanctions list. Proceed to do another audit of the Zimbabwean companies on that list and the banks. The people who run these institutions are some of the richest most comfortable Zimbabweans who can fly business class to South Africa, the Asian countries and get first class medical treatment. In their minds, there is no shame to it. They didn’t put Zimbabwe on sanctions, therefore why should they suffer.

How Corruption took root in Zimbabwe

Why is corruption so deep rooted in Zimbabwe? Why is it embedded in all state institutions including the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) . To illustrate the impact of these sanctions, an average Zimbabwean trying to buy something payable in foreign currency to supply to Zimbabwe will jump through the hoops before that is realised. Paying school fees to overseas universities can also be quiet a task for an ordinary Zimbabwean.

The truth is any company that buys, sells or trades with Zimbabwean companies and individuals on the sanctions list is targeted and blacklisted by the United States of America (USA), The United Kingdom (UK) the European Union. What has since happened is that the government has devised means of flying under the radar and finding friendly countries willing to risk being blacklisted, willing to supply equipment for example. Banks are afraid of being blacklisted. So, minerals are smuggled out and sold on the black market. The money is routed using BIGWHITE and systems setup when Rhodesia learned to bust sanctions during Ian Smith’s UDI.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) epicentre of Corruption

The central bank (RBZ)became central to running off book operations in the name of sanctions busting. It smuggled and continues to smuggle gold and diamonds to the black market to bust sanctions. The RBZ buys directly from makorokoza (Small scale miners) and diverts to black market. The same is done with foreign currency deals being done through kingpins who have direct access to the central bank, the presidium and close relatives.
A system was created were income generating institutions would retain certain percentages every month to keep their operations running. These retained funds were abused as evidenced by numerous reports that implicated the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Judicial Services Commission (JSC) ZINARA, ZESA, ZIMRA, RBZ. The ZRP had stopped depositing fines with JSC, they had created their own ticketing system. Some monies delivered to high profile individuals in boxes. Ultimately, a system had been created that allowed for loopholes, grey areas in pursuit of sanctions busting. Tender systems turned upside down to combat sanctions. Criminals connected to those in power stepped into the gap.

Hobson’s choice

“You can have a white horse or a white horse … that’s Hobson’s choice!” Meaning you have no choice at all. The only option you have is the one that is being offered to you. As long as the sanctions remain in place this systematic corruption can never be rooted out. Calling for sanctions to remain on Zimbabwe amounts to calling for corruption to continue. Hobson’s choice, it’s a necessary evil.

Some have suggested arrest. But can they arrest each other, knowing that they were doing it together, knowing why they did it, why they must continue to do it to get around sanctions? The army in the Democratic Republic of Congo was unable to feed its troops because of the sanctions. In came John Bredenkamp, Nick Van Hoogstraten, all the Rhodies with the rule book on how to bust sanctions. “Let us assist you feed the army; we know how to bust sanctions.” Money was deposited in banks in the British Isles. Those sent to do so on behalf of government started pocketing for themselves. They are now rich. They are the new cartels.

Mnangagwa’s challenge

The challenge for Mnangagwa will be to genuinely demonstrate the political will required to end the endemic corruption. The political will to restore key state institutions to their original constitutional functions without destroying them. How does he gracefully neutralise key allies, relatives and comrades who fuel corruption and State capture? If he were to remove the rotten eggs, who does he replace them with and by which date? 2023 is around the corner. Will this be strategically wise? The danger is that the rotten eggs will coalesce and remove him. The bigwigs relegated to “Shake Shake building” (Zanu PF headquarters) are a restless lot. They have nothing to do.

Dealing with Corruption

Let’s us be honest with ourselves. ZACC and Kumbirai HODZI will never give us the way forward about successfully dealing with corruption. We need a policy on criminal prosecutions to prevent selective application of anti-corruption legislation. What sort of policy? We use timeframes: 2000 to 2005; 2006 to 2010; 2011 to 2017; 2018 onwards.
Or perhaps we can use estimated monetary value of the prejudice to the taxpayer: $100 000 and less; $500 000 and less; $1 million and less; $5 million; $10 million and so on. Let’s start with those who corruptly acquired assets after the new dispensation and move downwards, or vice versa. Or we can use a third way. A reconciliatory way which acknowledges that this scourge arose through attempted sanctions busting. This approach acknowledges that most state institutions were roped into off-book practices to bust sanctions.

Which in essence is truthful in that it acknowledges that most people participated either directly or indirectly in corrupt practices. Or we tell them to simply surrender two thirds of corruptly acquired property or cash by a set time and get immunity from prosecution.

Mnangagwa tried this with his list of naming and shaming. He failed. He tried getting civil servants to declare their interests in business ventures. He failed. So, maybe an amnesty? Immunity from prosecution? Carrot and stick. If there are no sacred cows, all ZACC must do is check from number one downwards what assets or bank balances everyone has. Then serve them with High Court orders to explain how they acquired such wealth, and if they fail, they lose the assets.

Political and electoral reforms

On political and electoral reforms, the harsh reality is that the party with the majority in parliament will push those reforms that benefit their policies and support their government. That is democracy, the tyranny of the majority. The opposition should accept the proposal of being officially appointed, recognised and appropriately remunerated in parliament, Westminster-style. That way they can effectively hold government to account and check its excesses. SADC, the African Union, Zimbabwe Electoral Support Network and domestic regional bodies endorsed the 2018 elections. There will be no Government of National Unity, no transitional authority, no back-door entry to the table. 2018 is not 2008. Let’s move on.
The opposition should focus on its role in parliament and force the pace of reforms. They should influence the legislative agenda to cause debate on the necessary changes.
The GNU did not result in robust electoral law reform agenda. What was its purpose? Whose interests did it serve? Certainly not the interests of ordinary Zimbabweans.

Way forward for Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is a constitutional democracy. Strengthening the institutions set up by the constitution will strengthen our democracy. How? Accountability.
How do we hold institutions to account? In parliament and speaking with one voice.
As Zimbabweans, we need to disabuse ourselves of the notion that Europe, America and Britain are our saviours. We need to stop outsourcing the solutions to our problems to outsiders. Let’s tell each the truth as Zimbabweans, to build Zimbabwe for ourselves. Our future generations. Sanctions are affecting everyone. Indeed, sanctions must go, so should corruption, patronage and nepotism.

“My Damascus Moment Was Clear And I Apologised”: Obert Gutu

By A Correspondent- Former MDC T stalwart Obert Gutu who is now a commissioner at the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission has reiterated his sanctions must fall mantra regretting ever supporting their imposition on Zimbabwe as arguably the worst mistake of his political career.

He said in a tweet:

My Damascus moment was clear & emphatic.

Supporting & clamouring for more sanctions to be imposed against my beloved country, Zimbabwe ?? was arguably the WORST mistake of my political career.

I publicly apologised for this awful & treacherous mistake.

SANCTIONS MUST FALL

I Am Furious.

The prolific Herald columnist, Reason Wafawarova writing today says: “I saw this happening as a young teen and because of this my value for Zimbabwe is based on the heroic sacrifice of those that were killed as “terrorists” as we collectively fought with our own lives as weapons to destroy the colonial empire.

“I am furious with traitors of our revolution masquerading as custodians of Zanu PF our liberation movement than I am with collaborators of our erstwhile colonisers.

A 1970s portrayal of Rhodesian police officers harassing black villagers- Chinhoyi7 movie

Zanu PF ideology is simple. GUTSARUZHINJI. MASS EMANCIPTATION.”

In July last year, Wafawarova warned ZANU PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa, saying that he is going to go the way of Adolf Hitler if he does not change his ways.

Wafawarova is a prolific Zanu PF member who helped propel Mnangagwa to power between 2016-17, and he writes from his base in Australia.

Mines Ministry Demands $8m From The 2022 Budget

By A Correspondent- The Mines Ministry is demanding $8 million from the 2022 budget to woo investors into the mining sector and ensure that closed mines scattered around the country are reopened.

This was said on Sunday by Mines minister Winston Chitando in a report which he presented in Victoria Falls during the 2022 pre-budget seminar in response to issues raised by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines.

He said:

The ministry will enhance its efforts towards the resuscitation of closed mines. A total of $8 172 604 is required to support promotional activities, engagement with investors and relevant stakeholders towards the reopening of the closed mines.

More effort is also being made through Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC) whereby they are engaging various investors to reopen closed mines. The ministry intends to transform the Lupane office into a full-fledged provincial office. Currently, Bulawayo Metropolitan hosts most of the staff and operations of the province.

Chitando said during public hearings by the committee on the 2022 national budget, members of the public demanded that government must prioritise the reopening of closed mines throughout the country to enhance employment creation and improve mining revenue going into the national purse.

He said Zimbabwe had a lot of large-scale mines that were shut down due to the collapse of the economy leaving thousands of employees jobless.

He added that it was also recommended that a lithium smelting and processing plant should be set up to produce products rather than export raw minerals.

Zimbabwe intends to achieve a US$12 billion mining industry by 2023 with a view to attaining an upper-middle-income economy by 2030.

Zanu Pf’s 19th National People’s Conference On The Cards

By A Correspondent- The ruling party Zanu-PF’s 19th National People’s Conference kicks off at Chipadze Stadium in Bindura, Mashonaland Central province tomorrow, with a number of high-level engagements expected to dominate the four-day programme which runs up to Saturday.

The National People’s Conference is being held in a hybrid format for the first time in the history of Zanu-PF due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw last year’s calendar event being suspended.

The party’s Politburo meeting will be held at the main venue while delegates from the provinces are expected to follow the main proceedings at Chipadze Stadium virtually.

In line with Covid-19 health regulations, delegates are expected to produce their valid Covid-19 vaccination certificates before accreditation.

In Bulawayo, 101 delegates will gather at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) Hall 2 where they will follow the virtual proceedings from the main venue.

Other provinces will also congregate at selected venues where they will follow proceedings.

Bulawayo yesterday joined the rest of the country in marching against sanctions

The annual party indaba takes place at a time when the Government under the Second Republic led by President Mnangagwa is rolling out a number of initiatives to revive the economy as part of a transformative drive towards an upper middle-income economy by 2030.

In an interview yesterday, Zanu-PF acting spokesperson Mike Bimha said it was all systems go following the last meeting on preparations yesterday.

“We are almost ready for the indaba and various sub-committees today submitted their reports to the national chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri. She was quite happy with the amount of effort that has been put by the sub-committees to make sure that the conference is a success,” he said.

“With the reports that we got, it is quite clear that we will have a successful conference. The various provinces are ready with all the materials and we believe that the connectivity will operate as expected.”

Bimha said the main venue was mainly for the Politburo members who are less than 100, including some Government ministers.

“The conference is officially starting on Wednesday with the Politburo meeting while the Central Committee will be on Thursday,” he said.

Bimha said President Mnangagwa will officially address delegates on Friday.

The conference will discuss, among other issues, the state of the party, state of the economy, food security and nutrition, social services and poverty eradication, macroeconomic stability and reengagement, infrastructure development and utilities as well as value addition and beneficiation.

The annual Indaba is coming at a time the country has embarked on rapid modernisation in terms of infrastructure development, industrialisation and economic growth in line with President Mnangagwa’s vision for an upper middle-income economy by 2030.

Consistent with the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and the country’s devolution thrust, the Government is making sure that development leaves no one behind.

Infrastructure development and rehabilitation, a key pillar in the economy in terms of the NDS1, is receiving increased attention under the Second Republic, with several key projects being implemented across the country.

Some of the notable projects being undertaken by the Government include the construction of Lake Gwayi-Shangani in Hwange district, Matabeleland North, Tuli-Manyange Dam in Ntalale in Gwanda district, Matabeleland South, the revamping of Beitbridge Border Post and dualisation, upgrading and tolling of the Beitbridge-Harare-Chirundu highway.

The Lake Gwayi-Shangani project is a major component of the National Matabeleland Zambezi Water Project (NMZWP), which upon completion in December, is expected to provide a permanent water solution for Bulawayo and Matabeleland region.

Modernisation of the Beitbridge Border Post is in line with Vision 2030 of attaining an upper middle-income economy, and is one of the key projects being undertaken by the Government to promote the ease of doing business and trade facilitation.

The Government is also undertaking the Robert Mugabe International Airport upgrade and the US$1,5 billion Hwange Units 7 and 8 expansion as well as the Hwange Power Station units 1-6 upgrade.

The ongoing Emergency Roads Rehabilitation Programme 2 (ERPP2) launched by President Mnangagwa in response to the damaged road network throughout the country as well as devolution funding, have transformed key infrastructure in both urban and rural areas.

Road rehabilitation is a key enabler in transforming Zimbabwe into an upper middle-income economy by 2030.

The economy is on a recovery trajectory and for the first time in many years, the country exhibited higher resilience to recent unforeseen shocks, including the latest outbreak of Covid-19.

Anchored on the successful 2020/21 rainfall season, higher international mineral commodity prices and a stable macro-economic environment, Zimbabwe’s enhanced resilience to prevailing shocks has it implementing a number of development projects despite the many competing priorities.

Domestic GDP growth for the year 2021 is projected to remain strong at 7,8 percent, slightly above the 2021 National Budget growth forecast of 7,4 percent

This will be mainly driven by recovery in the agriculture sector, which recorded a bumper harvest in the last season, and is set to grow by to 34 percent.

The good harvest realised by Zimbabwe from the last farming season will slash the import bill by US$300 million.

The recent success in food production indicate that Zimbabwe is on course to achieve the US$8,2 billion revenue from agriculture by 2025 under the Agriculture and Food Systems Transformation Strategy.

Agriculture and mining sectors are expected to collectively contribute US$20 billion to the economy in a few years’ time.

Due to continuing fiscal support measures, higher growth rates are projected in agriculture, electricity generation, accommodation and food services as well as financial services.

The fiscal and monetary consolidation measures being implemented by Government have firmly anchored inflation expectations as shown by a significant decline in inflation from 837,5 percent in July last year to 106,6 percent in June 2021.

The country’s annual inflation stood at 51,55 percent for the month of September 2021.

In recent months, the country’s annual inflation has been slowing down as monetary authorities projected a rate below 25 percent by year-end.

Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) statistics show that there has also been a steady performance of the mining sector, coupled with noticeable recovery in the manufacturing sector whose capacity utilisation rose from 36 percent in 2019 to 47 percent last year and 54 percent in the second quarter of 2021.

The strong economic recovery has also been attributed to the comprehensive reform drive being undertaken by  the Government.-statemedia

Gvt Adamant On Child Marriages

Case Alert

25 October 2021

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government is adamant that it has accomplished a lot in stopping child marriages in Zimbabwe despite some reported rising cases of the pervasive practice.

In response to summons filed at Harare High Court on 28 September 2021, government lawyers are unwavering that President Mnangagwa’s administration had taken all the legislative and other steps required at law to stop child marriages including enforcement of the same.

The lawyers argued that a request for an order from the High Court to secure the rights of the girl children exposed to the practice of child marriages is misplaced, unnecessary and incompetent.

In March 2021, government released some shocking figures showing that 4 959 girls fell pregnant between January and February 2021 alone at a time when the scourge of child marriages increased due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and associated national lockdowns.

The response by government filed at High Court on 18 October 2021 came after Sharon Moffat, a Masvingo resident and two human rights organisations recently asked the High Court to order Marange Apostolic Church of St Johanne and the Apostolic Churches Council to mount a campaign denouncing the practice of child marriages.

In the application, Moffat, Legal Resources Foundation (LRF) and Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) want Marange Apostolic Church of St Johanne and the Apostolic Churches Council to be ordered to publish at every shrine or every place of worship, a message for 19 consecutive weeks, clarifying, for the benefit of their congregants
and adherents, that the marrying or giving in marriage of girl children is not an aspect of their respective faiths and should not be committed in the name of their religion.

Moffat, LRF and WCoZ also want the High Court to order Health and Child Care Minister Constantino Chiwenga, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Hon. Ziyambi, Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Hon. Kazembe Kazembe, Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Hon. Sithembiso
Nyoni, Zimbabwe Republic Police, Zimbabwe Gender Commission and Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission, to take steps to bring to an end the practice of marrying and giving in marriage of girl children in Marange Apostolic Church of St Johanne and in Independent African Apostolic Churches represented by Apostolic Churches Council.

The trio want Zimbabwean authorities to conduct an identification of children married in terms of the practice, their removal, from such marriages and placement in places of safety established in terms of the Children’s Act for their rehabilitation.

They also want the activation of the criminal justice system against all men who have married or otherwise have had sexual intercourse with minor children in the name of religion post the decision of the Constitutional Court in Mudzuru and Another v Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs and Others in Case No. CCZ-12-15 and the publication of a summary of the declaraturs in all national newspapers and on all national radio stations in all vernacular languages.

Moffat, LRF, which is a law based human rights organisation and WCoZ, a network of women’s organisations involved in the preservation and protection of women’s rights including the rights of children are represented by Paidamoyo Saurombe of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, Advocate Thabani Mpofu, Advocate Regina Bwanali and Advocate Choice Damiso.

The matter is yet to be set down for hearing.

Human Rights Commission Investigates Cyrene Farm Invasion

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) has visited Cyrene Farm in Figtree, owned by the Anglican Province of Central Africa Church, to investigate cases of human rights violations by invaders and police.

This was after a church worker was assaulted by police officers when he went to report the invasion of the property.

Over 500 illegal settlers have invaded the property owned by Anglican Province of Central Africa Church, Figtree, Matabeleland South province.

The settlers seized the farm at the height of the chaotic land reform programme in 2000, with police said to be reluctant to evict them despite the existence of a High Court order.

ZHRC officers, who visited the area early this month, are preparing a report to be submitted to Parliament and President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

“The commission is investigating how the invaders got on the farm, who gave them permission, and whether their offer letters are valid and authentic, and why the local authority has not taken action even after church officials engaged them several times on the issue.  They are investigating why there is laxity on the part of law enforcement agents to deal with the invaders and the land barons,” a source from the church said.

The source said ZHRC intended to establish who was responsible for the acquisition of the farm since it is disputed land.

ZHRC chairperson Elisto Mugwadi could not deny nor confirm that the commission was probing the Cyrene Farm invasion.

Mugwadi said he was not on the ground to comment and referred Southern Eye to his deputy Dorothy Moyo, who is based in Bulawayo.

“Yes, our team went on a fact-finding mission. It is currently  writing a report that will constitute our recommendations. I will link up with  it tomorrow and see how far it has gone,” Moyo said.

Sometime in 2003, the Anglican Church filed a High Court application seeking the eviction of settlers from the farm.

The High Court granted the order, but the deputy sheriff did not execute the order until recently.

Indications are that the deputy sheriff was paid to deal with only 52 of the illegal settlers.

Church officials are concerned that the settlers are returning to the place and police officers are reluctant to take action.

The invaders are reportedly encroaching onto Cyrene High School, clinic and a cattle-ranching project.-newsday

Man Threatens To Shoot Motorist With Stolen AK47

By A Correspondent- A 33 year old man from Gutu has been arrested in Beitbridge for breaking into two houses and stealing an assortment of goods, including an AK47 rifle belonging to a member of the President’s Department.

Obey Mhuru was arrested after a man he had threatened to shoot using the stolen rifle in  Vhembe View suburb knocked him down with a car on Friday morning.

Mhuru was not asked to plead to two charges of unlawful entry when he appeared before Beitbridge Resident Magistrate Mr Takudzwa Gwazemba on Saturday.

Mhuru was remanded in custody to November 5.

Prosecuting, Mr Ronald Mugwagwa said on September 7 at around 5pm, Mhuru stole a Samsung J7 smartphone, R1 000 and US$70 after breaking into a cottage in Benne Knot Street .

The court heard that the following day at around 5pm, Mhuru went to a house  belonging to the President’s Department when the occupants were away.

He broke down the door to the dining room and subsequently forced open the doors to the other rooms, ransacked the house and stole an AK47 rifle and a magazine with  30 rounds.

Both offences were discovered on September 9 and reported to the police.

Mhuru was arrested on Friday last week at around 2am after being hit by a car as he attempted to attack a motorist using the stolen firearm.

The rifle was recovered loaded with 19 rounds and Mhuru confessed to investigators that he had stolen the firearm.-statemedia

Council Under Fire Over Sewage

By A Correspondent- Bulawayo residents have lamented the council’s delays in responding to  burst sewerage in their communities saying this could contribute to disease outbreaks.

The city has recorded a series of sewer pipe bursts, which has seen raw effluent flowing into their homes.

Speaking during a Ward 17 meeting in Pumula North yesterday, residents said apart from sewer pipe bursts, the council also delayed in attending to burst water pipes, which sometimes leaves them without water for days.

The meeting was organised by the Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association and was attended by council officials and area councillor Ms Sikhululekile Moyo.

The meeting’s agenda was to brief the community on council budget processes as most of them had not participated in its online consultation processes.

One of the residents said she had been living with a burst sewer for three  months despite reporting the burst pipe to council.

“I reported this issue three months ago  to have raw sewage flowing from your  home on a daily basis with no action being taken.
“We don’t know whether the council’s offices are still functional. Where should we report now?” asked the resident, who did not reveal her identity.

Another resident said council was also not attending to burst water pipes and as a result he had dug a small well in his yard to harvest the water.

“Whenever there is water shedding, some residents even come to my house to fetch water from the well.

“The council is losing a lot of treated water due to its failure to timeously respond to burst pipes,” said the resident.

The residents said council should channel ward retention funds towards fixing burst water pipes.

Some residents complained that the council keeps increasing rates yet service delivery was not improving.
This was in response to the city’s proposed 2022 budget which will see rates increasing by 200 percent.

In response to their concerns, Cllr Moyo said the local authority was resource constrained to effectively attend to some of their concerns.

“As council we don’t have enough money to attend to some of the challenges that are obtaining in our communities. I understand that residents want to channel ward retention funds to fixing burst sewer and damaged water pipes but the money is too little.

“I however urge you to continue paying your bills as this will enable the council to attend to some of your challenges,” said Cllr Moyo.

She said ward retention funds can be channelled towards resuscitating soccer grounds and other recreational facilities.

Cllr Moyo said this will help youths to refrain from substance abuse and also reduce general crime in the area.

She challenged residents to also protect council infrastructure from vandals that deliberately destroy the local authority’s property.-statemedia

On 22/10/21, police in Mutawatawa joined hands with members of the public and managed to arrest two of the several armed robbery suspects, Chikomborero Gono (28) and Luckson Tsingano (32) who were masquerading as police officers.

The suspects robbed Tinotenda Karumazondo (21) employed at a local gold milling company of USD15 000, 49g gold and a cellphone before kidnapping him, tying him with shoelaces and spraying him with an unknown substance that made him go unconscious.

A member of the public sustained a gunshot injury on the palm during the exercise. The two suspects are assisting the police with investigations whilst the other suspects are at large.

This comes after police announced the arrest of a syndicate that was dealing in guns. Two police officers who were part of the syndicate were also arrested.

Police said some of the guns were being sold to armed robbers.

Cases of armed robberies have been on the rise in the country lately.

ED Looking Forward To UK Visit

By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said he is eagerly looking forward to his first visit to the United Kingdom when he attends the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) scheduled for the 23rd and 24th of November in Glasgow, Scotland.

He revealed this in a twitter thread where he said that because Zimbabwe felt

I am eagerly looking forward to my first visit to the United Kingdom. @COP26 meeting of nations comes at an extraordinary time in world history. Many countries are still battling the pandemic whilst having to undertake immense changes to our economies to meet climate goals.

The discussions @COP26 are going to be an important step in agreeing to a collective way forward.

For Zimbabwe, we feel the impact of climate change more than others. Our temperatures have risen by approximately 2°C over the past century. Which has seen a significant increase in extreme weather. In the past two decades alone, we have had to deal with 10 droughts.

If the world doesn’t step up, we will see jobs lost, livelihoods destroyed, and people will lose their lives. That is something we must avoid and why Zimbabwe is coming to the table with ambitious plans to tackle climate change.

Zimbabwe has now committed to reducing emissions by 40% before 2030. The time for words is over – we must act now.

While we will offer to hasten our economic transformation, we do need to remain alive to the shocks of drought and the impact of climate change through necessary social safety nets. I will be appealing for multilateral support to supplement our efforts.

Zimbabwe has come a long way over the past three years, I hope our presence @COP26 and our commitment to the global fight against climate change will be recognised as part of our ongoing re-engagement campaign.

Meanwhile, ousted Ntabazinduna chief Nhlanhlayamangwe Ndiweni on Thursday last week led a group of demonstrators to the Zimbabwean embassy in the United Kingdom (UK) calling for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to be barred from participating at the event.

Teachers Hold Anti Sanctions Solidarity Meeting

By A Correspondent- Members of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (Artuz) yesterday staged online anti-government protests meant to coincide with the Southern Africa Development Community (Sadc) anti-sanctions solidarity day where they demanded improved working conditions.

They said the protests were targeted at Finance minister Mthuli Ncube, whom they accused of slashing their salaries from US$540 in 2018 to US$100 as he implemented his unpopular fiscal policy measures in 2018.

Their protest yesterday ran under the hashtag #EndSalarySanctions.

In a series of tweets, Artuz said the salaries that teachers were getting were inadequate for their self-sustenance.

“The teacher takes home a salary of ZW$16 308, which is an equivalent of around US$82. The teacher cannot afford 2 100 calories of food per day for each member of a family of five. They earn below the food poverty line. They are malnourished. These are sanctions imposed on us by the government #EndSalarySanctions,” Artuz tweeted.

“This is the reason why we are calling on citizens to help us implore @MthuliNcube to end #EndSalarySanctions.”

They said the only weapon left for them was to down tools in protest as the responsibility to save the education sector was on Ncube’s shoulders.

“Teachers keep on piling pressure on @MthuliNcube to end salary sanctions. The government should not punish civil servants who are working round the clock to keep this nation ticking. The sanctions list is long.”

Zimbabwe Teachers Association (Zimta) acting national general-secretary Goodwill Taderera said although teachers affiliated to his union had not unanimously decided to join the online protests, as a union they welcomed every effort and move by different stakeholders to enhance the conditions of service for teachers.

“We support every move and effort that will push the government to pay teachers a reasonable salary. We appreciate Artuz for fighting in their corner and we have no problem with any stakeholders that push for salary enhancement and the well-being of teachers,” Taderera said.

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) President Takavafira Zhou said sanctions come in two forms; internal and external.

Zhou said internal sanctions included issues such as underpayment of teachers in particular and of civil servants in general, as well as the high-profile corruption that has become routine and has invited imposition of external sanctions.

“We call upon our Zimbabwean government to pay teachers and the rest of the civil servants as they are the pillars of sustainable development of the nation.  As much as we have not jointly planned anything with any other union in Zimbabwe, we have been in the forefront  in calling for unity in diversity against slave wages for teachers that in some way are a form of internal sanctions.

“What is, however, more deleterious to national development are internal sanctions characterised by cartelism, underpayment of workers and a shocking contrast between richness and poverty,” Zhou said.

Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) secretary-general Japhet Moyo said as a union, they had been campaigning against wage theft over the years.

“Any effort by any of our affiliates or workers to demand a living wage is appreciated and supported. Businesses have been making huge profits taking advantage of the parallel market rates, but at the same time refusing to link wages to the same exchange rates. Most goods and services are in US$ or parallel exchange rate, but wages are compressed. This is in both the public and private sectors,” Moyo said.

Last week in response to threats by teachers to strike, Primary and Secondary Education ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said:  “There is nothing overwhelming about calls for job action that would be heeded by about 3 000 teachers.  Primary and Secondary Education minister Evelyn Ndlovu said she was committed to address issues pertaining to the welfare of teachers.”

Hospitalised Armed Robber Hauled To Court

By A Correspondent- A suspected armed robber, who was last week run over by a car belonging to a would-be victim in Beitbridge, was yesterday arraigned before the courts.

Obey Mhuru of Ruzive village, Chief Chimombe, Gutu, is facing two counts of housebreaking and theft involving an AK47 rifle, R3 500 and US$70.

Mhuru, who was not asked to plead, was remanded to two weeks in custody from his hospital bed at Beitbridge District Hospital by magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba.

He was hit by a car at a house that he had broken into in a bid to commit robbery last Friday.

Allegations are that on September 7, 2021, Mhuru, broke into a cottage at 193 Benne Knot Road in Beitbridge.

He stole a Samsung Galaxy 7 mobile phone, R1 000 and US$70 belonging to Zakaria Manatse and Albert Mtandwa.

Mhuru returned the following day and broke into the main house and stole a collapsible AK47 which had 30 live rounds belonging to Phillip Wutawunashe.

He was arrested on Friday while allegedly attempting to steal at a house along  Hill Close.

Mhuru sustained back and facial injuries after the owner hit him with a car. He was found in possession of an AK47 gun.

Ronald Mugwagwa appeared for the State.

Zanu Pf Dumps Sybeth Musengezi

By A Correspondent- Zanu-PF has disowned its member, Sybeth Musengezi, who recently filed a High Court application, challenging President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s legitimacy as leader of the party and country.

Last week, Musengezi approached the Bulawayo High Court seeking the nullification of the November 19, 2017 special session of the Zanu-PF central committee meeting which elected Mnangagwa to replace the late former President Robert Mugabe.

Through his lawyer, Nqobani Sithole, Musengezi cited Zanu-PF as the first respondent and Mnangagwa as the second, while other respondents are party secretary for administration Obert Mpofu, acting political commissar Patrick Chinamasa, former Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko and former Finance minister Ignatius Chombo.

Zanu-PF director of information and publicity Tafadzwa Mugwadi yesterday said Musengezi was not a Zanu-PF member, warning him to “chew what he was capable of swallowing”.

“The official Zanu-PF position on Musengezi is that the character in question is not a member of Zanu-PF,” Mugwadi said.

“As such, the party does not take cognisance of whatever he is up to. However, we are alert to how his actions are aimed at tarnishing the image of the party and the sooner he realises the legal consequences of such actions, the better for him and those behind his actions. He must be advised to chew that which he is capable of swallowing.”

But Musengezi dismissed attempts by Zanu-PF to disown him, saying he has locus standi to sue the ruling party, Mnangagwa and other senior party officials.

In his court application, he said he had been a member of the ruling party for over 20 years, adding that he was a youth league member under Mugabe’s leadership in Harare province, and held party card number 1515786.

He said he renewed his Zanu-PF party membership following the 2017 power transition at Mai Chitepo branch in Muzinda 1 party district in Harare province under card number 0131988.

Musengezi also participated in the Zanu-PF primary elections for Harare North constituency ahead of the 2018 elections and lost to the MDC Alliance’s Allan Markham in the elections.

“Who is Mugwadi to discredit my membership when he doesn’t even have five years in the party?  Although I lost, I was a Zanu-PF primary election candidate for Harare North constituency ahead of the 2018 general elections.”

He told South African broadcaster SABC on Saturday that he was not fighting for the removal of Mnangagwa, but he wanted the party to follow the dictates of its constitution on appointment of its leaders.

He said he received overwhelming support from some Zanu-PF members close to Mnangagwa for filing the application.

Legal expert Alex Magaisa said Musengezi’s application exposed an internal power struggle in Zanu-PF which clearly showed that he had backing from an authority within the party.

“We were not far off at the BSR (Big Saturday Read) when we suggested there are several signs of trouble in the house (of) Mnangagwa.  Musengezi is a smart, articulate and well-prepared chap. He has done his homework. But he is not a lone wolf. He is a well-trained proverbial tortoise, but not even the smartest tortoise can climb to the top of the fence post on its own.

“Someone helps it to get up there. An application like this would have taken several meetings of well-organised people to plan and execute. Other tortoises usually lend their name to an application and remain in the background. They have no voice, even when they are challenging individuals without State power. It’s more than bravery for Musengezi to take up such a public platform as the SABC,” Magaisa said.

Ultimatum For eSwatini Security Forces

By A Corespondent- Supporters of eSwatini Premier League teams Pirates, Wanderers, Swallows and Highlanders have threatened to boycott playing matches against eSwatini security forces football clubs because of violence on civilians. Security forces are reported to be brutalising pro-democracy protestors.

We publish below the joint statement from the supporters:

We as representatives of the supporters of the top four teams in the country, Mbabane Highlanders, Moneni Pirates, Mbabane Swallows and Manzini Wanderers met on this day to discuss the issue of playing against the security forces teams going into the new season.

Mental,/ football is supposed to help improve concentration, boost mood and reduce stress while building good friendship and working together However, these have been dented by the forces’ brutality on unarmed civilians including football supporters of the teams.

it is for this reason that we feel our supporters and players are not mentally fit to engage in sporting activities with teams from the forces. The teams are therefore appealing to the PLE to positively address and put this into consideration and give guidelines to avoid negative consequences that may include tines in the event teams take the decision to boycott games against the forces.

We, therefore, give your office up until Friday to respond on this matter.

Human Rights Lawyer Bemoans Dearth Of Constitutionalism In Zimbabwe

A local youthful human rights lawyer has bemoaned the dearth of constitutionalism following the recent spate of arrests of political activists and journalists.

The 28-year old Freddy Michael Masarirevu from Tendai Biti Law firm lamented over the rampant abuse of rule of law.

“My dream is to see a Zimbabwe which is found and based on Constitutionalism” A Zimbabwe that values freedom of expression and in overall Human rights,” he said.
He added:

“This is by no means an attack on the government of the day but a genuine dream to see that aspect of our lives improved. I believe developments starts with an appreciation by leaders of the day of the Social contract, that citizens allowed them to lead and govern and the same have the right and power to change that whenever they (leaders) deviate from their mandate. “

Masarirevu holds a Masters of Law degree from University of Zimbabwe and cut his teeth with Koto and Company Legal practitioners in 2017.

He is a protege of legislator Job Sikhala , who is also his role model.

By A Correspondent- Opposition MDC Alliance’s deputy chairperson, Job Sikhala has dismissed as rubbish a poster circulating on social media that claims he is the MDC Alliance candidate in the 2023 presidential election.

Madzibaba Rapes Client At Shrine

By A correspondent- Police in Harare’s in Budiriro high-density suburb is looking for an alleged rapist named Madzibaba Tanya.

Madzibaba is wanted in connection with an alleged case of rape where he is said to have sexually abused a 33-year-old woman twice at his shrine.

The incident is said to have happened in September after the victim visited him seeking help for her sick son.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza yesterday warned women against being trapped by “perverts bent on sexual gratification” at religious shrines.

“Sex predators are a menace to society. The public, especially women, should not be deceived into believing in such religious pronouncements by perverts whose acts are simply bent on sexual gratification. People should always be alert and report such people to the police,” Mwanza told NewsDay.

“We are on the hunt for the alleged rapist and anyone with information on his whereabouts should report to any nearest police station.”

It is alleged that on September 20, the complainant, from Budiriro 1, went to the accused person’s shrine seeking assistance for her son.

Madzibaba Tanya reportedly told the complainant that she had spiritual husbands and ordered her to have sexual intercourse with a man in the bush for three consecutive days and then bring semen for cleansing.

“The complainant told the accused person that she had no one to have sexual intercourse with and the accused volunteered to be the man,” Mwanza said.

After two encounters, she did not return for the third time after figuring out that she was being raped.

She reported the matter to the police.

Mohadi Son In Trouble Over 2019 Road Accident

By A Correspondent- Former vice President Kembo Mohadi’s son has ignored fixing cars he negligently hit in a road accident that happened in 2019.

A Bulawayo resident Sibukekile Moyo has filed a police complaint against Mohadi’s son, Kgosidintsi, over the issue.

The accident reportedly happened on August 24, 2019, in Bulawayo and Mohadi, of Glen Lorne in Harare, paid a fine for driving without due care and attention.

Moyo told NewsDay that after the accident, Mohadi undertook to pay for the repairs to her car, as well as three other cars that were damaged as a result of his conduct. She said:

He had promised to fix my car, but he later kept quiet until I fixed my car using my own money. When I called him and told him I had fixed my car, he said I should keep the receipts and he would reimburse me. But until today, there is nothing and he has now blocked my numbers.

Moyo said Kgosidintsi owed her US$800 for the repairs, and that the former Vice-President had asked her to give him the quotations, but nothing materialised from him too.

She alleged that Kgosidintsi later claimed that he was a student, while his father was a civil servant and so they could not afford to pay that kind of amount.

Moyo added that Kgosidintsi blocked her number when she kept calling him.

Ndiraya Wary Of Misfiring DeMbare Strikers

Saturday: Chicken Inn v Ngezi Platinum Stars (11am), FC Platinum v Highlanders (3pm)

Madhuku Says Sanctions Keeping Mnangagwa On Power

By A Correspondent- The National Constitution Assembly, NCA Party sanctions were giving the Zanu PF government a political advantage to stay in power.

Below is a complete statement by NCA issued by the party’s spokesperson Madock Chivasa:

▪️The NCA party join hands with all progressive forces in calling for the unconditional removal of sanctions against Zimbabwe.

▪️The sanctions are affecting us as Zimbabwe socially, politicaly and economically.

▪️As NCA party, an opposition in Zimbabwe, we believe that Zanu pf is using sanctions to justify its incompetence and hold to political power.

▪️The sanctions are not serving the purpose that they were imposed on Zimbabwe.

▪️As opposition in Zimbabwe we believe that removing Zanu pf must not be a foreign agenda but should also be purely a Zimbabwean agenda.

▪️Zimbabweans will eventually remove Zanu pf on their own terms and there is no need for any foreign intervention to achieve this noble definite cause.

▪️We encourage any other mechanism to deal with the problems affecting Zimbabwe and sanctions are not part of such a solution.

▪️As NCA Party we encourage all Zimbabweans to speak with one voice in denouncing the sanctions as well as calling for their unconditional removal.

DeMbare, Rhinos Clash In Chibuku Super Cup Quarter Final

ZRP Kills Man Over Fake Allegation

A weeping Plumtree mother narrates how her son was tortured until he began urinating blood.

Greetings to you all, I am Shepard’s mother.

I am here to narrate how my son Shepard died.

Shepard was in bed the whole morning until Trust came and asked to wake him up so they go and fix a car radio. The car belonged to Prince. Trust had been asked by Prince to fix the car radio.

Punso is the one who stole the car radio from Vitalis’ house, this is the same radio which was sold to Prince.

Prince then asked Trust to help him fix the radio, Prince then approached Trust to help him with the task.

They fixed the car radio together while Shepard was having a beer or two.

On Monday Shepard woke up and went to work, there he mentioned Ngwanyana’s car at the Council and they asked for Shepard, that’s how he was taken into the police station. The CID swore that he was going to tell the truth of what transpired with the radio and the tool box of which he denied any knowledge of. Shepard mentioned that what he knows is that Trust brought a car radio which he fixed in my yard on Prince’s car.

Then they started torturing him, beating him up and electrocuting him (Shepard). They whipped him underneath his feet, while he was chained in irons.

This caused so much pain to him until he relented and couldn’t take it anymore. Then they took a bench and laid him on top; they started jumping and stomping on him until his back was damaged.

Shepard was injured in his head, spinal cord, and his head suffered internal bleeding. He had a severe headache which made it difficult for him to lift up his head. Shepard stated that when he is walking, he feels too much pain from the beatings.

He was taken to court after 4 days being in remand prison. There was no transport to court however Chicco gave them a lift to the court house. At the courts it was asked what happened since Shepard could not manage to stand up on his own. Shepard announced that he was assaulted by the CIDs, Chicco, Ngwanyana, an unnamed lady and a man.

Shepard reiterated that he knows Chicco and Ngwanyana well. Shepard mentioned that Chicco drives a green car and Ngwanyana drives a white one.

They were taken back into remand and called for another court hearing session where he asked for bail to attend hospital treatment as he could not handle the pain anymore.

He was granted bail and left for his home. He was struggling to walk.

Puntso who is alleged he is the one who took the radio stated he told police officers not to beat them up as he is the one who stole the radio.

Pintso said that he went to Vitalis’ house and found the owner playing on his phone indoors, Pintso then proceeded to steal the radio. The owner turned on the lights and Pintso ran away leaving the boot of the car open. Pintso stated that he did all that these guys accused are innocent of

Despite this they assaulted Shepard nearly killing him. I took Shepard to the hospital. The police came to take a statement from him. Shepard mentioned that he was taken from work and tortured by the CIDs and he reiterated that he will not stop saying that he was beat up by Chicco and Ngwanyana.

He went downhill after the statement was taken by the police, Mangena came in and he only greeted Madam Mangena and didn’t want to engage with other guys.

Shepard was in serious pain and did not manage to talk afterwards. He began urinating blood.

Shepard was taken to Mpilo however when he returned, he was in a critical condition unable to talk or turn himself. At the hospital he was given drip medication  which I bought for him at a cost of $280, including some urinating tunes.

He could no longer urinate, and he was now using a catheter tube.

I then suddenly got a call around 5am that Shepard has passed away. I went up to the hospital to confirm and found out that indeed he is no more. The hospital staff mentioned he was struggling to breathe three days from non eating; he was weak. Shepard had been breathing through oxygen aids.

When the top officers at the camp heard about Shepard’s passing away, they said they will come over to apologise about what happened; they want good working relations to avoid squabbles.

The post-mortem will be done in a few days so that we establish what happened.

At the moment I am struggling to feed people who have come to the funeral wake as I have no support. I am currently not working and my husband is redundant. He is nursing his health at the moment. He was being looked after financially by Shepard.

I am in deep pain and in need of support in this matter. The perpetrators are still out there at large. I am appealing for help on how to get justice for my deceased son.h That’s all I know what transpired.

I thank you.

Madzibaba Uses Manhood To Drive Away “Spiritual Husband Haunting Woman”

Police in Budiriro, Harare, are on a manhunt for an alleged rapist known as Madzibaba Tanya, who sexually abused a 33-year-old woman twice at his shrine in September after she visited him seeking help for her sick son.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza yesterday warned women against being trapped by “perverts bent on sexual gratification” at religious shrines. Mwanza told NewsDay:

Sex predators are a menace to society. The public, especially women, should not be deceived into believing in such religious pronouncements by perverts whose acts are simply bent on sexual gratification. People should always be alert and report such people to the police.

We are on the hunt for the alleged rapist and anyone with information on his whereabouts should report to any nearest police station.

Mwanza said the complainant told the Madzibaba Tanya that she had no one to have sexual intercourse with and the accused volunteered to be the man.

After two encounters, she did not return for the third time after figuring out that she was being raped.

She reported the matter to the police.- NewsDay

Teachers In Online Demo

Members of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (Artuz) yesterday staged online anti-government protests meant to coincide with the Southern Africa Development Community (Sadc) anti-sanctions solidarity day where they demanded improved working conditions.

They said the protests were targeted at Finance minister Mthuli Ncube, whom they accused of slashing their salaries from US$540 in 2018 to US$100 as he implemented his unpopular fiscal policy measures in 2018.

Teachers-Strike

Primary and Secondary Education minister Evelyn Ndlovu said she was committed to address issues pertaining to the welfare of teachers.” -Newsday

ZANU PF MP Stops Borehole Drilling

Newsday -ZANU PF MP for Vungu constituency in Lower Gwelo, Omega Sibanda is facing stiff competition from former Chiwundura MP Brown Ndlovu, who is said to be eyeing the constituency ahead of the 2023 elections.
Ndlovu, who is currently the Zanu PF Gweru district co-ordinating committee chairperson, is allegedly eyeing to wrest the seat from Sibanda in the 2023 elections.

Omega Sibanda

Ndlovu is allegedly drilling boreholes in ward 8 in Vungu as part of his campaign for the seat.

He is also reported to have drilled boreholes in ward 12 at Nyambango Primary School in Chiwundura, Mandingingi village in ward 14, as well as in Lower Gwelo, and one at Nhlangano Secondary School and another in Tununu village under Chief Mkoba.

Investigations by NewsDay this week revealed that two boreholes at Nhlangano Secondary School and Nkani village are yet to be completed due to wrangling between Sibanda and Ndlovu.

Sibanda is said to have ordered people to stop drilling boreholes in the area without consulting .

He told NewsDay that although development was encouraged, Ndlovu did not consult relevant stakeholders about his projects.

“I am the sitting MP for Vungu constituency, but I was not consulted about his projects. Traditional leaders were also not consulted to ensure their participation. I think there is a normal procedure when doing community development projects which should include participation of relevant stakeholders like traditional leaders, MPs, as well as the beneficiaries to ensure that there is full participation.

Otherwise, there was nothing wrong with funding projects for community development,” Sibanda said.

He said President Emmerson Mnangagwa said no one within Zanu PF should interfere or disturb the sitting MP before his or her term in office expired.

Ndlovu, however, told NewsDay that he was not decampaigning the sitting MP. He said he was only assisting his former school, which had been facing water problems since last year.

“I went to Nhlangano Secondary School, and for that reason, I was just extending my help to my former school. I spoke to some teachers who are facing challenges due to the water crisis which then pushed me to help them. I think people might have misinterpreted everything and linked it to politics,” Ndlovu said.

Nkani village head Andreta Dube said the misunderstanding between the two Zanu PF officials started at a funeral in Ngaramatutha when mourners faced water problems which necessitated the call for borehole drilling.

“We are facing a water crisis which led to people fetching unsafe water from Gweru River. I think people misunderstood Ndlovu and sent a wrong message to Sibanda. I even received a call from our MP asking why we allowed such a project to take

place. I don’t think there is a hidden agenda like what people have been saying. He is only solving water problems in the community,” Dube said. -Newsday

ZACC Pounces On Sherriff for Selling 10 Properties

Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) is investigating High Court Sherriff McDuff Madega for suspected criminal abuse of office and the illegal sale of more than 10 properties attached by the courts.
This comes after several people have claimed to have lost houses on account of Madega’s actions.

ZACC chairperson Loice Matanda Moyo

According to reports, he is accused of working with a cartel of officials in his office, lawyers, auctioneers and officials at the Deeds Office to target people whose properties would have been attached by the courts. At least 10 cases that l involve improper sale of the seized properties have been reported to Zacc.

Some of the complainants are Mr John Amon Chinyanganya who is accusing Madega of selling his Harare house with a fake deed at an auction (under case number HCR 58/07/21), Green Energy Company for illegally authorising the sale of goods and motor vehicle by a public auction (HCR 25/08/2021, Abigail Mutize for unlawfully and corruptly selling their Mabelreign house and changing title deed before full payment (HCR 89/06/2020), Piwayi Chiutsi for fraudulently attaching his property and declaring a local company Baridie Investments as highest bidder but had never participated during the auction (HCR 31/07/ 2021) and Francis Masawi who is accusing Madega for abusing his power to sell his property (HCR 18/05/2020).

Others are Bryn Michael Baxter who is accusing him of conniving with a relative to fraudulently register an estate (HCR 116/09/21), Rufaro Shiri is accusing him of colluding with a company that is not registered (HCR 126/09/21), Tendai Matanga alleged that he won three civil suits which he handed over to Madega who failed to act (HCR 36/10/18), Gunike Makwira who is claiming that his properties were sold without following the procedures (HCR 18/05/21) and Hilton Tserayi who is accusing him of fraudulently auctioning his vehicle worth US$15 000 for US$100.

When contacted for comment, Zacc spokesperson Commissioner Mr John Makamure said he would only be able to provide the details of the developments once provided with the reference numbers of the cases.

However, in June this year, Mr Makamure once confirmed that the anti-graft body was indeed undertaking a probe into Mr Madega’s conduct.

“The matter is under investigation and we will make details available once we have completed the investigations,” he was quoted saying. These developments also come after Bariadie Investments, is still trying to gain ownership of the Highlands property despite having lost in the High Court.

High Court Judge, Justice Tawanda Chitapi found that Mr Mashamhanda was the legal owner of the 4 377 square metre property worth over US$230 000 after buying it in 2019 through an auction.

It had been attached from Harare lawyer Mr Puwayi Chiutsi following a wrangle with his former client Mr Elliot Rodgers over US$70 000 trust money.

Justice Chitapi accepted that Mr Mashamhanda bought it through an estate agent and took all the necessary precautions to ensure the title was unencumbered and secure.

Bariadie has made applications through the High Court on several occasions, saying it bought the same property in a 2017 auction through the Sheriff of the High Court and asserts that the Sheriff of Zimbabwe once instructed lawyer Mr Tendai Biti to process the transfer of the property into Bariadie Investments’ name.

The company has also approached the Supreme Court over the same matter to appeal against the High Court judgment.

In one of the cases reported in June also under reference number RR 30/07/19, Mr Madega is accused of selling a Bluffhill house in Harare under CBZ mortgage without transferring the proceeds of the sale to the bank and other beneficiaries.

According to the owner Mr Nobert Njazi, the Sherriff sold the property after misrepresenting to the court that he had failed to locate the original title deed no 71S9/200S.

“He did not advise CBZ Bank of the attachment and sale of my house. He did not check or examine bonds, caveats and encumbrances to the holding deed otherwise he would have noticed the interest of CBZ Bank.”

Mr Njazi argued that by holding a mortgage bond over the property, CBZ Bank had the right and was supposed to be given first preference when the time to pay arrived.

In another case reported to Zacc by then, a complainant said Mr Madega facilitated the sale of his house within a day of processing the deeds, while summons had been sent to a wrong address.

“A property was sold below the evaluation reports from private estate agents. In terms of the law after the sale of the property, the Sheriff is supposed to ask the owner of the property to file an objection to the sale within 15 days before the Sheriff can confirm the sale.

“Instead the Sheriff sent the letter to the property owner’s farm in Shurugwi and yet all other letters were being sent to his lawyers. The owner of this property received this letter a day before the expiry of the window period to file his objection. He was unable to file on time resulting in the house being confirmed sold. The Sheriff then ordered the registrar of deeds to process the title deeds for the new buyer. The deeds were processed within a day.” Newsday

MDC Alliance Denounces Media Centre Violence

Impunity has become an addiction in Mwonzora’s party, Mdc Alliance Namibia absolutely condemns Harare Media Centre violence.

23 October 2023

Mdc Alliance Namibia is quite astounded by the wild behaviour of those who purport to have abandoned the freedom train engineered by the supersonic President Advocate Nelson Chamisa alleging him of leading a violent party.

Lies have short legs! Counterfeit democrats under the leadership of Mdc-T’s illegal senator Yvonne Musarurwa on Thursday stormed and brought to a halt a press conference by a party official Kudzanai Mashumba who longed to unearth how party leader Douglas Togarasei Mwonzora was allegedly infringing the supreme law of both party and country at large by stealing public funds.

Musarurwa and her thugocrats barged into the press conference at the Media Centre in Harare with the evil intention of suffocating the universal basic human freedoms of association , expression and assembly.

The Zanupf sponsored bouncers unleashed claps on the official before they hurled him out of the room and mercilessly dragging through several flights of stairs into the overpopulated street, where he commenced shouting:”They are beating me because I want to expose their corruption”.

As he shouted ,a gang of thugs charged towards him, grabbed him and jumped into the car which drove off at the highest velocity.

This demonstrates that Mwonzora and cronies are now reading from the satanic Zanupf books of state-sponsored violence , corruption and impunity.

Moreover, Mdc Alliance Namibia has the conviction that conventionally, violence is understood to be driven by negative emotions, such as anger, frustration or extreme fear. It is clear to social democrats in Namibia that Musarurwa Yvonne and her thugs were desperate that their master, Douglas Togarasei Mwonzora’s senseless and barefaced corruption will be unraveled before the journalists.

Corruption and violence have become permanent features of humanity in the MdcT since the Corona Supreme Court judgement of March 2020.

This behaviour of muzzling democratic space for citizens and journalists should be condemned with equal measure. Mwonzora should desist from acting in the Zanupf totalitarian manner.

In 2023 we shall vote violence out giving Advocate Nelson Chamisa no competition against thugocrats and their surrogates. When we say they are Zanupf lite, we mean this impunity when our own Cde Makomborero Haruzivishe is languishing in jail for demanding freedoms and justice in Zimbabwe.

Our message to perpetrators of violence and corruption is that Mdc Alliance shall consistently fight against gross misgovernance in Zimbabwe.

Yvonne Musarurwa and her thugs’ aggressive behaviour was automatically reinforced by positive feelings of Zanupf induced power and dominance. It is clear to genuine revolutionaries that violence is among the topping causes of death for people aged 15-44 years worldwide and Zimbabwe is not an exception. As social democrats, we would like publicly scath these high levels of violence and crimes in regions such as Southern Africa since they have adverse effects on our political, economic and social lives. These are symptoms of underlying socio-economic, and political challenges such as inequality, rapid urbanisation, abject poverty, unemployment and institutional shortcomings.

Furthermore, Yvonne Musarurwa and her judicially-constructed political outfit should know that the adverse effects of violence on a country are detrimental not only to its citizenry, but the well-being of the community and the country in toto. Mdc Alliance Namibia believes that those who masquerade as the main alternative should comprehend the negative impact of violence on the innocent citizens. Violence has significantly and directly reduced economic growth, and posed a great obstacle in eradicating poverty in our people who are struggling to secure a single nutritious meal per day. It has become open to everyone that Mwonzora and crew epitomise violence and unprecedented corruption.

In a nutshell, Mdc Alliance Namibia is totally ready and prepared to fight against those who trample on human rights with impunity. As constitutional democrats who are cognisant of the fact that violence causes profound psychological torture and trauma, reducing the quality of life for all Zimbabweans. The Zimbabwe Republic Police should apprehend Yvonne Musarurwa and her thugs if they are not comprised. We demand justice to Mashumba who was manhandled for expressing his democratic rights.

Yvonne Musarurwa’s intentional use of physical force ,exploited with full potential of causing serious harm , injury, disability and loss of precious life. This type of violence does not only lead to physical harm ,but also have severe negative psychological effects.

Health Effects Of Lead Exposure

Objectives of International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week
raise awareness about health effects of lead exposure;
highlight the efforts of countries and partners to prevent lead exposure, particularly in children; and
urge further action to eliminate lead paint through regulatory action at country level.

Call for action
Lead exposure from paint is entirely preventable. Paints for a range of uses can be manufactured without the addition of lead compounds. WHO calls on all countries that have not yet done so to establish the necessary legally binding measures to stop the use of lead in paint.

Mwazha Surpasses A Century

By A Correspondent- African Apostolic Church (AAC) founder Bishop Paul Mwazha celebrated his 103rd birthday on Saturday in Waterfalls at a well-attended gathering.

Over 16 000 congregants of AAC, popularly known as VaApositori vekwaMwazha, mainly from Harare and Chitungwiza converged in Waterfalls for what they call Gumhano, a monthly church service gathering and took the opportunity to celebrate their leader’s birthday.

Born on October 25, 1918, Mwazha is believed to have started preaching at the age of 16.

In an interview on the sidelines of the celebrations, Alfred Kushamisa Mwazha, the son of Bishop Paul, who is one of the church Bishops, said the huge gathering showed that everything they are doing as a church is in the right direction.

“We have gathered here for prayers, thanking the Almighty for taking care of our father Paul Mwazha. He is now 103 years old and we are happy as a church and family for that, hence the huge gathering you are witnessing here.

“This gathering is a testament that the servant of God, Paul Mwazha, was given a gift by God. A gift to win peoples’ hearts through teaching and preaching His word to them.

“My father started preaching at the age of 16 and now he is 103 years old, you can imagine all the years he has been doing God’s work. More than 80 years, he has dedicated to God’s work.”

Bishop Alfred added that the entire family and church were happy with the protection that their founder was getting from God. Bishop Elson Tafa, who is also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the church, said they were humbled by the huge turn-out for the celebrations.

“Gathered here is also the Priesthood Council who are the three sons of Paul Mwazha weAfrica. They are Bishops Edward Ngoni Mwazha, Alfred Kushamisa Mwazha and James Mwazha. This Council is the one which represents Paul Mwazha as you know that he has advanced in age and walking is now difficult so in his absence, his three sons are here in his place.

“So this gathering has Paul Mwazha’s blessings through the Priesthood Council. Whatever we do is approved by this Council.”

Bishop Tafa said as they celebrated Bishop Mwazha’s birthday, they also prayed for the nation, President Mnangagwa and his administration.

He said the church was also praying for Zimbabwe’s economic prosperity.

Chiwenga Pushes For Beer Price Hikes

By A Correspondent-The Minister of Health and Child Care, Vice President Costantino Chiwenga, says the government should introduce taxes on beer and cigarettes to raise money for medical services.

Chiwenga who was speaking during a pre-budget seminar for parliamentarians in Victoria Falls where he was the guest of honour said this will help avoid overtaxing every citizen. He said:

The ministry is proposing that a certain percentage of the ZINARA funds be ring-fenced to finance health services such as purchasing of ambulances required in cases of road traffic accidents and the treatment of victims of accidents requiring hospitalisation.

It is also proposed that a certain number of cigarettes be reserved for financing health, for example, for every five packets sold one goes to the national health services. With regards to alcohol, a certain number of bottles should contribute to financing healthcare services.

Chiwenga said the taxes shall be collected from the source, where manufacturers will be asked to furnish the government with details of quantities made since it is impossible to collect the “two per cent tax from non-users of these things.” He added:

So let’s have a cent from alcohol, cigarettes and ZINARA fees, to fund national health services.

He challenged Finance and Economic Development minister Mthuli Ncube to honour the Abuja Declaration where African states agreed to commit at least 15 per cent of the national budget for health services.

The ministry was allocated 13 per cent in the 2021 budget.

Chiwenga made the proposal in response to parliamentarians who had proposed that the treasury should introduce a 1.5 per cent cancer levy across all sectors of the economy to fund cancer-related medical needs.

His proposal comes when members of the public have complained over many taxes that are leaving their pockets dry.

Some criticise the government for failing to curb tax evasion by big companies and too many tax exemptions.

Mohadi Son In A “Hit And Run”

By A Correspondent

By A Correspondent- Former vice President Kembo Mohadi’s son has ignored fixing cars he negligently hit in 2019.

Madhuku Speaks On Sanctions, Says If Removed Mnangagwa Will Fall

Chief Ndiweni Joins Chamisa In Protesting Against Mnangagwa

By A Correspondent- Ousted Ntabazinduna chief Nhlanhlayamangwe Ndiweni last week led a demonstration against President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s invitation to the Climate Change Conference (COP26).

COP26 will be held next month on November 23 and 24 in Glasgow, Scotland, and Mnangagwa has been invited to attend.

But last Thursday, Ndiweni led a group of demonstrators at the Zimbabwean embassy in the UK and later handed over a petition to UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Ndiweni told the protesters that climate change issues in Zimbabwe could only be dealt with effectively by a government that respects the rule of law, “a government underpinned by democracy.”
He added the ruling ZANU PF was not democratic. He said:
The meeting requires honesty and some form of legitimacy, but currently, in Zimbabwe, we do not have that. So we are raising our voice in a democratic country here in England to say that the presence of the so-called President of Zimbabwe is not acceptable among the brotherhood and sisterhood of nations. He (Mnangagwa) cannot sit at the table among other such nations. So we are raising our voices to say we reject him.

Last month, Mnangagwa met the British ambassador to Zimbabwe Melanie Robinson in Harare in preparation for the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP 26).
The Zimbabwean government viewed the invitation as a step towards re-engagement with the international community.
Ndiweni who Mnangagwa’s government dethroned as a chief is now based in the UK.

Released White SA Businessman Exposes Zim Horror Prisons

By A Correspondent- Rusty Labuschagne, a South African businessman who spent ten years in Zimbabwean prisons after being convicted of murder, denied committing, wrote a book narrating his ordeal.

He said he does not have any anger despite being “wrongfully” convicted.

The 60-year-old Labuschagne, a successful businessman, who ran a safari outfit, was accused of drowning a poacher near his fish resort in Zimbabwe in late December 2000.

He was sentenced to 15 years in a Zimbabwe jail and was moved around to various prisons in the country.

He spent hundreds of thousands of rand trying to prove his innocence and fighting the system.

Eventually, after 10 years, Labuschagne was released from prison. He said he went on a fishing trip with his friends, including Spike Claasen, on Lake Kariba in December 2000. He narrated:

On our way back, we spotted two fish poachers in a steel boat, who immediately, upon seeing us, started paddling hastily for the shore in an effort to get away from us.

Knowing that they were notorious poachers, I drove my boat towards them to scare them off, and the wake of my boat tilted theirs, causing them to jump out into the water, which was about 1.5m deep.

They were about three metres from the shore and soon scrambled to dry land.

Spike and I then watched as they ran away into the bush, and thought nothing more of it.

The following day the police arrived and accused them of drowning one of those poachers. He said one of the poacher, the police, and the courts, framed him adding that this was a “politically influenced conspiracy.”

He was sentenced to 15 years five of which were suspended as remission. His friend, Spike, only got a US$10 fine and was set free because he was not driving the boat.

Labuschagne has written about his experience in his new book, Beating Chains, an inspiring story of hope and resilience.

Labuschagne, who now resides in Cape Town with his wife Sandra, and does motivational talks for corporates, private functions, and churches, says his book was written for people who are overcoming hardships and to have the injustice recorded.

He spent time in various prisons in Zimbabwe such as Khami Maximum Security Prison, Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, Harare Central, and also Connemara Farm Prison.

He says finding happiness in even the smallest of things in prison kept his mind healthy.

While Labuschagne is happy to be free and now lives a wonderful life with his wife, Sandra, he says he is still scarred.

Labuschagne adds that he also visited the president of Zimbabwe in 2018 for a presidential pardon and President Emmerson Mnangagwa instructed the minister of justice to find a legal way of pardoning him.

However, the feedback he got after a year was that people were upset because he had gone directly to Mnangagwa.

Ronaldo Speaks On Man U 0- 5 Defeat To Liverpool

Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has reacted to Manchester United’s embarrassing 0-5 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford yesterday, saying the loss is on them (the players) and the fans deserve better performances.

United were brutalized by a well-oiled Liverpool machine, with man of the moment Mohamed Salah netting a hattrick.

The loss mounts pressure on under-fire manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær, whose job is hanging by a thread following a run of poor results.

Ronaldo however believes that no one apart from the players themselves is to blame for the disaster.

“Sometimes the result is not the one we fight for. Sometimes the score is not the one we want. And this is on us, only on us, because there’s no one else to blame. Our fans were, once again, amazing in their constant support. They deserve better than this, much better, and it’s up to us to deliver. The time is now!,” he wrote on Instagram.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe
