The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) has said it is finalising the processes preceding the release of the November 2022 Ordinary Level examination results, contrary to some false reports circulating in some sections of the media.

In a statement on Tuesday, Zimsec said the results will be announced at the appropriate time when all the processes have been completed.

“There have been false reports circulating on social media, particularly from a Zimsec parody (false) Twitter account and an online publication, Afrogazette, purporting that the Ordinary level results have been cancelled. We haven’t issued any statements on the pass rate of the 2022 O Level Examination candidates or cancellation of results,” read part of the statement.

“These reports are published in mischief to cause anxiety and unrest amongst candidates and parents. We advise all stakeholders to disregard these speculative attempts to cause panic and despondency and await official updates from ZIMSEC.

“We are in the process of finalising assessment of 2022 Ordinary Level performance and have completed the marking. The processes which precede the release of the results are currently underway”.

Zimsec said those candidates who had pre-access to question papers at different examination centres were identified during the writing of the examinations and also at the marking of scripts stage.

In addition, these candidates will, in line with existing laws have their examination results cancelled.

“Our stakeholders are called upon to expect the release of results to deserving candidates when all necessary processes have been completed. We wish to thank the public and all our stakeholders for their interest and cooperation in ensuring the integrity of our examination system,” added the organisation.

US based NGO, AHOJ (All Hands On Justice) issues a statement condemning the abuse of arrested CCC activists who have been denied food in prison. Statement below:

Lawyers, representing CCC political party supporters, report that their clients are likely going to suffer with starvation in remand prison as the Prison officers have denied them food.

Today, 25 CCC political party supporters arrested for attending a political meeting spent the whole day without food whilst attending court. The prison guard officials said food could only be given whilst at the remand prison. The cut off time for visitations and giving food at the remand prison is 3pm and the bail hearing seasons at court are going past 3pm meaning the 25 will be spending days without food.

Amongst those arrested are people over 70years old and some on medication. Such acts by State institutions is unacceptable and amounts to persecution!

We urge the Prisons and Correctional Services to respect the Constitution of Zimbabwe. Section 227 of the Constitution instructs the Prisons and Correctional Services to be non-partisan, national in character, and professional. Section 50 of the Constitution also clearly states that any person who is arrested must be treated humanely and with respect for their inherent dignity.

Over 700 jobs were lost while the lives of several small-scale formal traders operating at the once-thriving Mpopoma Outspan factory are at stake after their factory shells were gutted by fire with property worth millions of dollars going up in flames.

The traders lost furniture and equipment when the fire broke out yesterday morning resulting in the factory being reduced to rubble.

The fire broke out around 5.45am in a small section of the vast factory and quickly spread.

The factory, popularly known as Spamprekini, is situated along Nketa Drive adjacent to Mpopoma Recreational Park.

So enterprising was the factory that Mpopoma Outspan Association had perfected its operations to a level where both big and small buyers from different parts of the country flocked into the humble factory to place their orders.

Last year, Chronicle established that the factory produced around 400 high-quality lounge suites per month, 300 wardrobes and 250 kitchen units.

Now the factory with all its machinery has been reduced to ruins.

When the Chronicle news crew arrived at the scene shortly after 6am, scores of stall owners and residents stood in utter disbelief as they watched helplessly their source of income vanishing in a puff of smoke. Visibly shaken workers, some still in pajamas, watched as fire fighters battled to put out the blaze.

Some, with tears rolling down their cheeks, braved the raging fire as they stormed inside the factory in a desperate bid to salvage some of their merchandise.

One of the local residents, Mr Trynos Kapfudzaruwa, broke a gas tank stall whose roof was burning to retrieve tanks.

“I had to do it to save the factory. I do not own a stall in this place, but I saw it fit to assist because this has been an economic empowerment place for most people in our area,” he said.

The news crew also observed one woman with a baby strapped on her back, entering her stall to retrieve her stock.

According to a Bulawayo Fire Brigade official preliminary report, the first unit from Nketa arrived on site at 6.22am.

The report states that the suspected cause of the fire was “carelessly discarded lit material”.

“The entire premises were well alight with large volumes of smoke issuing out. Flames could be seen from a distance and producing serious crackling sounds,” read the report.

“The Fire Brigade observed that the entire club was involved, and that the materials mainly involved were timber, foam rubbers and other accessories all used towards the manufacture and repair of sofas and beds.”

According to the report, 75 percent of large quantities of timber, sofas, bed material and tools were damaged. The estimated value of the property is $350 million while the estimated loss is $175 million.

The factory had a furniture manufacturing section, grinding mills, a tombstone-making area, a kitchen with different small food outlets, a gas selling point, a tuck shop, and a poultry area with chickens.

Mpopoma Outspan Association vice chair, Mr Voice Moyo, who has been working at the factory since 1996, said they are devastated.

“We are in deep shock and devastated by what happened. We have lost everything and millions of finished products, materials and equipment have been lost,” he said.

“We are appealing to the Government to assist us to get back on our feet. Official members in our database are 227 and all of them lost everything.”

One of the furniture manufacturers, Mr Tadiwanashe Gamuchirai, said he noticed fumes from a distance and immediately rushed to retrieve his machines.

However, he lost all his finished products comprising couches and beds.

“I don’t know where l am going to get the money to refund some customers who had already paid deposits,” said Mr Gamuchirai.

Ms Nelisiwe Moyo, who run a kitchen shop, said the disaster is a huge blow to their business as the factory was their only source of income.

“I was alerted by a friend that the factory is on fire. Knowing that l had my property inside, I immediately ran to the scene,” she said.

“I could not believe my eyes when l saw flames and everything was destroyed. I am grateful to the people who helped me to remove my property before it was destroyed.”

A Mpopoma resident, Mr Tinashe Mpofu, said he was compelled to assist retrieve an assortment of equipment.

He said the factory also created employment opportunities for youths and women.

“I hope that they had insured their business ventures so that they can start rebuilding their empire again,” said Mr Mpofu.

In the wake of the arrest former ZRP cop Jaison Muvhevhi, another trained officer has been apprehended.

3 suspected drug dealers, one of them who is the ex-police officer, were yesterday arrested in Bulawayo following a raid at their homes in Entumbane suburb.
Police recovered marijuana, alcohol, weight gain tablets and cough syrups among other illicit substances. They also found pipes, which are used to inhale drugs, skin-lightening creams and plastic sachets, which are used to package drugs.

Elton Ndlovu (37), a former police officer, Asprila Maphosa (23), and Lydia Ndlovu-Mthimkhulu (27) are allegedly linked to an organised drug syndicate targeting youths.

The trio’s arrest is in response to the recent case in which 17 youths from Entumbane suburb were rushed to Ingutsheni Central Hospital after overdosing on crystal methamphetamine (meth).

The rate at which youths are abusing drugs has grown considerably with residents attributing that to the Covid 19 pandemic lockdown. About 250 drug addicts are attended to at Ingutsheni Central Hospital monthly, with the number of youths abusing drugs continuing to rise in Bulawayo.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube told journalists yesterday that the suspects were arrested following a crackdown on criminals in Entumbane.

“Our officers acted on a tip-off and raided the two houses in Entumbane and recovered a consignment of illicit drugs after conducting a search and arrested the three suspects. As police, we continue to conduct our investigations as we suspect that these people are operating as a syndicate involving several others,” he said.

Insp Ncube said the trio is expected to appear in court soon on charges of dealing in dangerous drugs.

“We arrested Lydia Ndlovu also known as Lydia Mthimkhulu last year during which she was only using Ndlovu as her surname. She was convicted of similar charges and got a suspended sentence of six months,” he said.

“This time around Lydia changed her surname to Mthimkhulu probably as a way of trying to avoid court bringing up the suspended sentence from her previous conviction.”

Insp Ncube said Lydia’s mother, Jane Ndlovu popularly known as MaHadebe is an alleged drug peddler who is operating behind the scenes.

He urged parents and guardians to immediately report cases of drug abuse and also desist from dealing with their children involved in substance abuse.

“As police, we have noted that most of these youths that abuse drugs were either raised in child-headed families or live with grandparents. We are, therefore, going to conduct a community awareness campaign against drug and substance abuse at Honours Academy and Entumbane High School,” said Insp Ncube.

Zimbabwe is experiencing an upsurge in drug abuse cases and most of those abusing the drugs are young people.

Last year, the Ministry of Health and Child Care launched a five-year strategic plan (2021-2025) against substance abuse to curb its prevalence which has become alarming.

Substances that are commonly abused are alcohol (both licensed and unlicensed brews) tobacco, cannabis and non-medical use of controlled medicines such as codeine-containing cough medicines and benzodiazepines. -state media

A form three learner at Loreto High School in Kwekwe District, Midlands Province left her classmates, including her teacher, stunned when she reportedly gave birth at the hostels.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning.

The 15-year-old learner reportedly drew attention of other learners, with some helping her in delivering the baby. Teachers also assisted in the delivery process.

The school head, Mr Phillip Mapiravana confirmed the incident. He, however, said the girl gave birth at the hostels.

“Yes, it is true, the girl was doing Form Three at our school. She is safe and we have since notified her parents in Gweru. That is all I can say for now,” he said.

Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education spokesperson, Mr Taungana Ndoro said arrangements have been made for the child to receive post-natal care.

“Yes, it is true that one of our learners gave birth in the hostels and she is presently receiving post-natal attention. The school led by the health coordinator, who is a trained teacher, assisted her in giving birth,” he said.

Mr Ndoro said the ministry has since deployed learner welfare officials to assist the learners.

“We have also deployed our learner welfare department to provide socio-psycho support to the pupil as well as other pupils at the school,” he said.

The latest development comes at a time when the country is grappling with issues of child pregnancy and marriages.

The number of pregnant girls who drop out of school is still high across the country despite the existence of a law allowing them to remain in school even after being impregnated.

The Education Act which was amended last year makes it illegal to expel pupils who fall pregnant.

Teenage pregnancies or child marriages have been identified as some of the reasons contributing to pupils dropping out of school.

Recently, a nine-year-old Tsholotsho girl was raped and fell pregnant. The girl was assisted to deliver at the United Bulawayo Hospitals.

The First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa is at the forefront in the fight against the scourge having lined up a number of programme such as the educative Nhanga/Gota/Ixhiba programme to conscientise women and girls against indulging in early sexual debuts.

Lobby groups are also at the forefront calling for stiffer penalties for perpetrators.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has launched a “Catch up Strategy’ as a way of returning to school children who drop out of school due to various reasons, including pregnancies.

In Kwekwe District alone, a total of 1 182 learners who had dropped out of school were returned to class courtesy of the ‘Catch-Up Strategy’.

Of these, a majority of 633 are girls who had either fallen pregnant or married. -state media

Meanwhile, an 18-year-old man from Nkayi was also arrested for theft of two Zupco bus batteries.

“ZRP Nkayi arrested an ex-Zupco bus conductor, Excellent Maseko (18) for theft of two Zupco bus batteries.

The arrest led to the recovery of the stolen batteries. The offense was discovered on January 15, after the driver had parked the bus with the batteries intact at the Zupco depot in Belmont, Nkayi on January 14 at around 6pm,” Asst Comm Nyathi said.

The likely jest was slapped on the medic on his very birthday. The development brought memories of a 2018 video of Emmerson Mnangagwa’s deputy Constantino Chiwenga saying that doctors are not employees, they are just occupants.

In the footage below taken in Dec 2018, Chiwenga is heard saying: “the doctor is a skilled technician, or labourer whose knowledge fits him for an Occupation but not a Profession…” He said this as he refused to heed requests for doctors to be paid more than their monthly $86 salary.

EX-CRIMINAL Investigations Department (CID) officer, Jaison Muvhevhi, who was on the run after shooting and killing three people in Wedza last Friday afternoon, was arrested in Mozambique this morning.

Police sources confirmed the arrest and said they are working on the paperwork for him to be extradited from the neighbouring country.

The sources said Muvhevhi took a biker from Marymount in Mutare and failed to pay for the transport and produced a pistol.

He then took a kombi from Mumango (Machipanda in Mozambique) to Manica.

The biker alerted the police and he was caught before he could cross the control post.

Muvhevhi who was barefooted was spotted at Mutare Boys’ High School yesterday where he fired some shots after being confronted by some of the residents at the school after he had approached their compound looking for food.

A 39-year-old Masvingo man who allegedly shot and killed a Mucheke tuckshop operator in cold blood before getting away with an undisclosed amount of money has appeared before a local magistrates’ court facing a murder charge.

Tafadzwa Kanengoni of Tembwe Street, Mucheke D who is also an ex-convict, was remanded in custody to January 27 when he appeared before magistrate Mr Tafadzwa Mhlanga facing charges of killing Michael Munhungowarwa (41) using a stolen pistol.

Prosecuting, Mr Liberty Hove told the court that on January 7, Kanengoni allegedly approached the late Munhungowarwa and his wife Martha Taguta as they were about to close their tuckshop located in Kaguvi Street in the Chesvingo area of Mucheke.

The accused allegedly drew an Astra pistol and demanded cash from the couple.

Munhungowarwa, who was holding a plastic with an undisclosed amount of money, got out of the tuckshop and confronted the accused who was standing outside.

Kanengoni then shot the deceased once on the chest and he fell down, dropping the plastic with money he was holding.

Kanengoni allegedly took the plastic with the unknown amount of money and vanished into the dark while Munhungowarwa was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The accused was eventually arrested by police at his girlfriend’s house after a manhunt.

The Astra pistol allegedly used to kill Munhungowarwa was recovered at his house in his mother’s non-runner vehicle.

The State has lined up Munhungowarwa’s wife to testify against Kanengoni after she positively identified him.

On the day Musengeyi lost his son, he heard about the shootings but not once did he imagine that his son was the victim. When the news finally got to him that Munashe had been killed, it was made worse by the knowledge that someone from their village had been responsible.

Eye witnesses said Muvevi arrived at the business centre and called out to Munashe who was sitting with others on the veranda of one of the shops.

After speaking for a few minutes, people were shocked to hear a gunshot and then see Munashe falling. No one knows what was discussed between the two but there were no raised voices or any sign of a fight. They are not even sure if Munashe knew Muvevi.

All they can do is speculate.

Even his father might never know why his son was killed.

“I am in pain right now, especially knowing that a person I once called a classmate could take my child’s life. If I were to meet him today, I don’t think our meeting would end well. It’s unfortunate that a person I grew up with, such a quiet person who never fought with anyone, can think of such a heinous thing,” he said in tears.

But it was not only Musengeyi and his family who lost his loved ones to Muvevi’s actions.

Madzibaba Sirage (Kanerusine) had relatives who knew his killer. His niece, Netsai Tiriboyi was also in the same class with the killer.

She was at the shrine when Muvevi shot her uncle and she only got to know later that the man who had produced a gun at the shrine was once a classmate.

“When he arrived at the shrine, I did not immediately recognise him. After he had shot my uncle, and people started saying his name, that is when it clicked that I knew him. We were in the same class at St Mathias Ruswa and we finished our O-Levels in 1999. He was a cool person and I don’t remember a time he was in trouble. After school we went our separate ways. It is so painful that my father had to die at the hands of someone who was part of our village,” she said.

A young Muvevi had once been a part of the church that he later came back to for a killing.

According to the community, as a child, he would go with his mother to church every week. He had stopped when he reached his teenage years.

Although he was no longer part of the church, Muvevi was still part of the community.

“We hear the man who has done such a heinous thing is a child from this village who went to school here. It pains us that a child from here can go out there and come back to do such a bad thing. We actually expected that our children would come back with good initiatives that help the area to develop, not to bring death and grief to us,” said Mr Stephen Mutombwa, a villager in Ruzane village.

Another villager Mr Fanuel Mapindu said the whole community was still waiting to hear why Muvevi had decided to bring so much pain and heartache in a community where he grew up.

Maybe now that he has been caught, the killer himself will provide answers to what was going on in his mind when he went back to the village of his origin and did the unthinkable.

A Diarrhoea outbreak killed seven people in Harare and one in Matabeleland South and affected 6 859 more.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care said in its weekly disease surveillance on their twitter handle that typhoid has also been confirmed in Harare with 20 certain cases and 82 suspected.

“For the period ending 1 January, 6 839 common diarrhoea cases and eight deaths were reported. Five deaths were reported from Sally Mugabe Hospital while Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, North-western districts in Harare Province and Mangwe district in Matabeleland South Province reported one death each. Of the reported cases 2 782 were under the age of five,’’ read the Ministry statement.

Harare has been the centre of diarrhoeal diseases since late last year with the province recording over 1 100 cases between October and November.

In an interview, Harare director of health Dr Prosper Chonzi said diarrhoea cases in Harare are on the increase since the beginning of the year and there have been 20 cases of typhoid recorded and 82 suspected cases.

Dr Chonzi said the most affected areas were the southern suburbs such as Hopley and Southlea Park and the most affected people are children from one to four years. Glen Norah had been affected by typhoid but no fatalities have been reported so far.

Dr Chonzi advised people who show symptoms of diarrhoea to seek treatment at any clinic as the treatment for diarrhoea is free regardless of age.

He said the increase in diarrhoea cases is caused by shortage of clean safe water and poor sanitation. Dr Chonzi urged people to be on high alert as cholera is still rampant and ravaging in neighbouring Malawi.

However, the provinces that reported the highest number of diarrhoea cases for the period under review by the Ministry of Health and Child Care are Mashonaland East Province which reported 1 384 cases and Manicaland Province with 1 245 cases. – state media

At a time when over 25 families are following in poverty after losing their loved ones and scores others are disabled without a single penny of compensation, since 1 Aug 2018, Mnangagwa yesterday threw up celebrations for donating a paltry 10 wheelchairs to people living with disabilities in Bulawayo.

The state media, publishing, said through this, the Second Republic is leaving no one and no place behind in its inclusive development agenda, and yet the 10 wheelchairs are glowing handed to Bulawayo the same area where Mnangagwa has maimed thousands since 1983 and killed 30,000 innocent lives.

Mnangagwa launched the country’s national disability policy on June 9, 2021 in Harare with support from various stakeholders including the United Nations. The policy sets standards for the inclusion of PWDs s in all facets of life, thereby serving as an overarching policy framework on disability across all sectors, including the public, private and development sectors.

Mnangagwa’s donation was a follow-up to last year’s Zimbabwe National disability Expo which was held in Marondera. Yesterday, 10 wheelchairs were handed over to the beneficiaries while 10 others are yet to come for distribution. Speaking during the handover ceremony yesterday at the Bulawayo Polytechnic College, Mr Macnon Chirinzepi, who is a director in the Office of the Special Advisor to the President on Disability, said this was an initiative that the Office of the President and Cabinet undertake every year to empower people with disabilities. “We conducted our disability expo last year in Marondera which ran under the theme ‘a participatory and inclusive society which leaves no one behind’ where Mnangagwa donated wheelchairs to PWDs throughout all provinces of the country,” he said.

“In order to promote their inclusivity and mobility, there was a need to recognise what the people are in need of first, and then help provide it. “That is what the Second Republic is striving towards achieving.” Mr Chirinzepi said the initiative is aimed at making sure that those with disabilities, and mobility challenges can move from one point to another. “The issue is meant to make sure that people with disabilities are part and parcel of our society. They should be seen as equals and we should not discriminate against them,” he said. Mr Chirinzepi said the Second Republic is walking the talk when it comes to the inclusiveness of PWDs in society. “We should move with them hence, the Second Republic is walking the talk and let us, therefore, embrace people with disability.

“The Government has made sure that PWDs are recognised and given equal treatment in terms of their qualification and also openings of jobs in the public service sector to promote inclusivity,” he said. Mr Chirinzepi urged other stakeholders in the community to install disability-responsive machinery in public spaces so that PWDs can operate independently as part of the promotion of their independence. A beneficiary, Mrs Karen Lusinga expressed her gratitude to the President for the kind gesture. “We truly appreciate this generous donation to us and it means a lot to us. In most cases, we are overlooked regarding all the challenges that we face on a day-to-day basis, but this donation will go a long way in solving some of our challenges,” she said. “For me, it was quite hard to operate without a wheelchair. I could not go to church or even go outside. Mr Robert Moyo from Mpopoma suburb said, “For a long time, I have been confined to my home due to a lack of a wheelchair. I am now able to get into town or move around the suburb on my own”. – state media

**Continued Political Violence, Shadow affiliate groups exposes a desperate unelectable Political party, as harmonised elections draw closer.

In the past months there has been a rampant brutalization of citizens by any pf thugs as well as some partial authorities.

The victims of political violence, most of them are CCC members, journalists, civic society and church community.

The so called second republic is yet to arrest, book or convict any of the pepetrators, hence one may clearly see that the authorities and courts are captured.

The reluctant eye if not ignorance of dealing with political violence perpetrators actually shows that government and zanu pf have become 1 intricate partners in pursuing a certain agenda which is against the will of the people and the constitution itself. It’s high time citizens converge for a common cause irregardless of diverse political affiliation.

It’s a matter of building a New Great Zimbabwe that is economically strong, democratically peaceful through chosing befitting leadership.

Those that have been given or grabbed a chance and yielded nothing should make it a day and leave office for new ideas, new blood and entrusted ones.

Conductors of the failed Coaches should abandon or removed from the political room of governance because they won’t prove any good if they failed before “during Mugabe era & ED era”.

A wave of change should prevail over the so called 4 ED propagandist term. Fear won’t bring food or enough salaries to your tables “Civic Servants”.

Vigilance ,endurance and action is the only way out. Hold the bull by its horns , twist and turn , fall and rise one day you will be celebrating a more than $540us salary “Teachers”.

Shadow groups that which you join inorder to attract favour at lower level be it from your councillor or Headmaster are not worthwhile. We need change and not persistence on failed systems. It is better to watch from the terraces than cheer in favour Herods or Pharaohs of our time. It’s high time we support the Solomons with wisdom and the annoited David’s to take us through to a Great New Zimbabwe.

We might not like some the styles from these people for various reasons but there comes a time where should go for the better. 2023 elections are a do or die for Zimbabweans. Imagine going for 5 more years with the current level of corruption,unemployment, political violence surely we will be doomed.

The religious community has been hickjacked and now instead of preaching peace and grace they have been romped in to cheer Worldly bloody political groupings. Selling the gospel for pieces of silver in form of labelled cars 4ED. Religious leaders get back to the bible and show citizens the Godly direction of peace,justice and love ,tolerance. This election period is a test of our patriotism ,courage and desire to build a prosperous Great New Zimbabwe under the steward leadership of Advocate Nelson Chamisa.

EX-CRIMINAL Investigations Department (CID) officer, Jaison Muvhevhi, who was on the run after shooting and killing three people in Wedza last Friday afternoon, was arrested in Mozambique this morning.

Police sources confirmed the arrest and said they are working on the paperwork for him to be extradited from the neighbouring country.

The sources said Muvhevhi took a biker from Marymount in Mutare and failed to pay for the transport and produced a pistol.

He then took a kombi from Mumango (Machipanda in Mozambique) to Manica.

The biker alerted the police and he was caught before he could cross the control post.

Muvhevhi who was barefooted was spotted at Mutare Boys’ High School yesterday where he fired some shots after being confronted by some of the residents at the school after he had approached their compound looking for food.

Zimbabwe’s Tobacco Industry Marketing Board (TIMB) cancelled Leanrise Tobacco’s buying license after finding the company guilty of side marketing.

According to the TIMB, Leanrise illegally leased its license to Munyasha Tobacco.

Leanrise denied the accusations and accused the regulator of misinterpreting the law. “We are not side marketing and there is nothing to substantiate any allegation of such nature,” the company said.

Leanrise argued it is entitled to have agents to advance its business. “Any tobacco purchased by the use of the Leanrise license is tobacco purchased for Leanrise,” the company noted. “In any event, the Leanrise license cannot be used to purchase tobacco from growers who are not contracted with Leanrise.”

The TIMB was unpersuaded by Leanrise’s defense, however. “After considering the contents therein, your justification for leasing your license to Munyasha Agro Pvt Ltd and all circumstances surrounding the matter, the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board has decided to cancel your license in terms of the Tobacco Industry and Marketing (Prohibition of side marketing) Regulations, 2022 SI 77 of 2022,” the TIMB wrote.

Mestaria Gallery in Alserkal Avenue will be showcasing a collection of traditional Zimbabwean sculptures by contemporary artists in their new exhibition The Shona Collective, opening on January 27.

The Shona art style is a centuries-old stone sculpting tradition of the Shona tribe — which used only a hammer and chisel to carve stone. These skills and techniques are passed down within families from one generation to the next.

The exhibition will showcase the work of nine Zimbabwean artists from their atelier, The Shona Collective. They are David White, Bywell Sango, Gregory Mutasa, Tawanda Makore, Royal Katiyo, Leonard Sezhendo, Lovemore Bonjisi and Witness Bonjisi along with Dominic Benhura, who is considered among the greatest Shona sculptors of his generation.

“I am excited to show the world how the third generation of Shona sculptors have transformed into producing more modern works with new types of stones that can only be found in Zimbabwe,” The Shona Collective founder, Demitris Petrides, tells The National.

While Shona artists demonstrate a striking range of styles and aesthetics, the sculptors all work with the same materials — the hardest varieties of serpentine gemstones such as springstone, fruit serpentine and leopard rock.

These varieties of serpentine are dense and have extremely fine grains and uniform structure, which make them an ideal raw material for sculpting.

Due to the natural weathering processes of these gemstones, their colours are often vibrant, ranging from yellow and green to brown and black. Along with the special and age-old techniques employed by the Shona sculptors, the pieces themselves are unique, one-off works of art carved from the earth.

“I am a strong believer that every single piece will find its predestined owner,” Petrides added.

The Shona Collective artists will be presenting their work in Dubai, as aligned with their greater mission in which to engage with a global audience and share the centuries-old stone sculpting art of the Shona tribe.

Zambia must use its alliances in the West to support the lifting of sanctions on Zimbabwe and allow the country to develop without inhibitions, the former Zambian Provincial Minister for Lusaka Province and Provincial Minister for the Copperbelt Province, Mr Bowman Lusambo, has said. He made an impassioned plea to President Hakainde Hichilema, who has joined regional calls for sanctions on Zimbabwe to end, to leverage on his close relations with the West to urge them to end illegal measures on Zimbabwe. Speaking at a media briefing last Saturday, Mr Lusambo, said it was unhelpful for the West to keep sanctions on Zimbabwe as President Mnangagwa has done well in bringing the country back into the community of nations through his engagement and re-engagement efforts.

“We want to urge the President, the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr Hakainde Hichilema, his friends — to those same people, the Europeans and the Americans, they wine and dine together — to talk on behalf of the people of Zimbabwe. The issue at hand is a very serious issue. When your neighbour’s house is on fire, even you, you are also affected,” said Mr Lusambo. He said there was no valid reason for the continuation of sanctions as the person that the West wanted to punish is deceased. “Cde (Robert) Gabriel Mugabe is a departed comrade. We want sanctions to be lifted on Zimbabwe. Zimbabweans are our brothers and sisters. We are not happy to see what has been going on in Zimbabwe.” As Zimbabwe prepares to hold harmonised elections this year, Mr Lusambo said the people of Zimbabwe must make the right decision by voting for someone who stands for Africa.

“We want the people of Zimbabwe to make the right decision. “The people of Kenya, they defended Africa, and we want Zimbabwe to defend Africa and to defend the region,” Mr Lusambo said. Mr Lusambo said he had no problem with opposition CCC leader Nelson Chamisa, but that he was accepting the support of the “wrong people” who wish ill on Africa. “He (Chamisa) is a good comrade, but he is being supported by wrong people, with wrong motives,” Mr Lusambo said. Zimbabwe’s opposition political parties, the MDC Alliance and CCC, have long been accused of being Western puppets being cushioned to effect regime change. Some Western governments have not made it a secret that they support the opposition with one Western embassy being in the habit of mimicking opposition propaganda on their official social media platforms.

The US has spent years denying the role of sanctions in undermining the Zimbabwean economy. However, in October last year, the US Department of State Sanctions Coordinator, James O’Brien, and Director of Sanctions Policy and Implementation, Jim Mullinax, admitted that American sanctions on Zimbabwe were indeed affecting investment into the country. “One of those reasons (why investors choose not to invest in Zimbabwe) is the risk that either newer sanctions may be introduced, or current sanctions are not clear,” O’Brien said during an online briefing. He admitted that “because of the duration of this (sanctions) programme” some would-be investors had decided to stay out of Zimbabwe. Under its latest measures, the US in 2022 imposed sanctions on a local business, Fossil Group, shortly after it invested in Lafarge Cement, in a move meant to cripple government infrastructure projects, which the two companies have participated in.

THE Kudzanayi Primary School head, who was accused of sending his nude picture to his married personal assistant is now under investigation.

James Mukwirimba, appeared before Highglen District Schools Inspector, Joseph Kabasa, yesterday.

Kabasa told H-Metro that they are yet to ascertain what exactly happened.

Among the witnesses called were Mukwirimba’s personal assistant, Privilege Zhou, and her husband Crispen Zhou.

Another married teacher alleged to have been sexually abused by Mukwirimba was also among the witnesses.

Mukwirimba sent Privilege his nude picture via WhatsApp and she showed it to her husband, Crispen.

Ziscosteel was has been shut for more than 10 years to date.

Mining giant Kuvimba Mining House, appointed by the Government to oversee the resuscitation of ZiscoSteel, is now on the ground following the completion of feasibility studies and the signing of the necessary contracts that should see the injection of US$300 million in new capital to kick start the rebuilding of the steelworks. Mining is expected to restart soon to create cash and revenue flows to power the resuscitation. ZiscoSteel board chair Engineer Martin Manuhwa said the new investor is putting in over US$$300 million to kick start the rebuilding of ZiscoSteel using modern technologies to produce high-grade steel. “Our start date following the signing of the final contract was supposed to be December 27, 2022, but the new investor is moving in now after meeting all the conditions that were set by Government and we have a business plan that will be tabled and will be approved by the Government and the board,” he said.

The new investors are bringing in new technology that would make ZiscoSteel one of the best producers of decarbonised steel in Southern Africa. “We will be using new technology in line with the fourth industrial revolution where we will have minimal emissions. We also intend to do modern decarbonised steel that will make it makertable,” he said. It was all systems go for the resuscitation of the giant steel company with most service providers having been awarded contracts to start business. “Technically, Kuvimba have moved in as you might be aware that not everything is done on site. I can safely say they are now on site and ready to go,” he said.

The company was starting by building up its human resources after losing manpower during its decade of closure. “We will be checking on key indicators of the contractor with much of it being financing of the operations, human resources as well as technological plan,” he said. “Over the first 90 days of the contract, we have seen Kuvimba deploying critical resources such as international consultants and legal practitioners to enable a smooth management transition. We now expect Kuvimba to catalyse the investment process with up to US$300 million capital injection in debt instruments while over US$1 billion is expected to be generated organically from the commercialisation of mining activities. “This is a new approach as previous mining was only a captive source of iron ore for the steelworks,” he said. The resuscitation of ZiscoSteel hinges on generating cash from mining operations and investing the proceeds to modernise and rebuild the steelworks. The strategy was accepted by experts as the most realistic way to timely revive the giant steel company.

Kuvimba House chief executive officer Mr Simba Chinyemba said ZiscoSteel was a national asset whose revival was crucial to the country’s economy.

“ZiscoSteel is an important national asset and our goal is to see the company flourish to surpass yesteryear production levels while creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs for local communities,” he said. Kuvimba Mining House has previously revived a number of companies and mines that include Jena Gold Mine, Shamva Gold Mine among others, it is expected to play a key role in the resuscitation of the giant steel company which used to employ over 5 000 workers during its peak.- state Media

A Mutare man narrates how he met gunman Jaison Muvhevhi in Mutare.

The man yesterday recounted how he narrowly avoided being a homicide victim after a harrowing encounter with triple homicide suspect, Jaison Muvhevhi, who allegedly shot and killed three people in Hwedza last Friday before fleeing the country, only to be arrested in Mozambique yesterday morning. Raphael Nyahwema (23), a son to Mutare Boys High School caretaker, said he was in a drunken stupor when he came face to face with the suspected serial killer who had gone to the school’s staff quarters looking for food. He confronted Muvhevhi, demanding to know what the rogue ex-policeman wanted at the school premises.

This did not go down well with Muvhevhi who produced a pistol and fired three shots at Nyahwema, but missed. Nyahwema managed to flee from the scene and Muvhevhi disappeared. Muvhevhi sneaked into Mozambique through an illegal crossing point soon after attempting to kill Nyahwema. Witnesses said Muvhevhi stormed the school on Sunday afternoon and demanded food, before opening fire on Nyahwema who had confronted him. Mutare Boys High School headmaster, Mr Phillip Padhuze, confirmed the incident, saying Muvhevhi fired three shots in the school grounds, but no one was injured.

“Muvhevhi arrived at the school on Sunday afternoon and went to the school quarters where some of our staffers stay. He confronted one of the ladies and demanded food. “One of our caretakers’ son confronted him and he opened fire on him. He missed him and one of the bullets hit a geyser. “Our learners were not affected by the shooting incident as the gunman disappeared after firing the shots. Police swiftly reacted and they provided security for our learners the whole night,” said Mr Padhuze.

Nyahwema said he was lucky to be alive as Muvhevhi fired ar close range. “Muvhevhi confronted me when I arrived at the pavilion at the sports ground. He asked me to cook food for him, but I refused. I realised that he had a gun and since I was cornered, I tried to pick a hoe-handle and that is when he opened fire. “The bullets missed me by a whisker and I bolted from the scene shouting for help. He remained behind while I ran for dear life,” said Nyahwema.

Ms Zvikomborero Mangorwa who was first confronted by Muvhevhi while she was taking a bath, said he violently knocked on their door and demanded that all the house occupants should move out. “I was taking a bath when he knocked on the door. When I opened the door, I realised that there was an armed person on our door. He asked for food. He also produced a US$10 bill and asked me to buy him a roadrunner chicken to prepare a meal for him but I refused. “He asked where he was and when I told him that he was at Mutare Boys High School. He then asked for directions to Mozambique. “He was barefooted and putting on a blue work-suit. He pretended to leave but when my sister came back home, he confronted her. I tried to signal to my sister to be careful as he was armed, but my sister failed to read my signal. She continued talking with him as he was seated outside on the pavilion,” she said. “He lied that he was on a mission to kill baboons as he had heard that they were a menace in the area and the shots he had fired were meant to scare away the baboons. “He insisted that he wanted food and even said he was prepared to cook his own food but my sister stood her ground and said she could not allow a stranger in her house,” said Ms Mangorwa.

She said Muvhevhi left when he realised that there were some people coming into the house. “When some of the workers came to our house after hearing the gunshots, Muvhevhi started walking away. One of the phones rang and Muvhevhi came back and threatened to shoot him for speaking on the phone. He later walked away and disappeared into the thicket,” added Ms Mangorwa.

Asked how he was feeling in the aftermath of the near death encounter, Nyahwema said: “I am feeling okay since I am always drunk.” Muvhevhi then skipped the border into Mozambique, where he was arrested by that country’s police officers after creating more dramatic scenes. A source close to the investigation said Muvhevhi was unlikely to be extradited to Zimbabwe yesterday as there were formalities to be completed. He was also likely to first appear in a Mozambican court to answer to charges of illegal entry into the country and pointing a firearm at a police officer. Muvhevhi, who is understood to have been a gold dealer, killed an apostolic church prophet in cold blood as he was preaching in front of congregants in Hwedza on Friday afternoon. He went on to fatally shoot the officer-in-charge of Hwedza Police Station, Inspector Maxwell Hove and a male bartender, Munashe Mujanhi (20), while another police officer was seriously injured.

After killing the three, Muvhevhi escaped resulting in police launching a manhunt for him. Investigations have revealed that Muvhevhi fled to Mutare where he bought a navy blue worksuit at a shop situated at Wasu Mall before he went to Mutare Boys High School premises. A team of detectives and other security agents remained on high alert when they received information that Muvhevhi was still in Mutare and was likely to cross the border into Mozambique. They then alerted their counterparts across the border and provided them with Muvhevhi’s pictures. His luck ran out yesterday morning after he was identified when he was about to board a commuter omnibus in Manica, Mozambique. He was then arrested after a scuffle by police in the neighbouring country. A team of detectives has been deployed to Mozambique to carry out the due processes of the law before Muvhevhi is taken back to the country for prosecution.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest of Muvhevhi saying: “The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that the murder suspect, Jaison Muvhevhi, has been arrested in Mozambique this (yesterday) morning,” he said. Ass Comm Nyathi said the victims of the murder had been identified as Crispen Mubvana Kanerusine (62) of Zinzombe Village, Hwedza, Inspector Maxwell Hove (43) of ZRP Hwedza Camp and Munashe Mujanhi (20) of Mujanhi Village, Hwedza. “The injured is Detective Constable Tendai Mugova. The Zimbabwe Republic Police acknowledges and appreciates the support given by members of the public in the pursuit of the suspect. “Equally, we applaud the bilateral relations with Mozambican police counterparts which has led to the collaboration and arrest of Jason Muvhevhi,” he said. Realising that he was being cornered, Muvhevhi abandoned his Toyota Allion vehicle and fled on foot into the nearby Chigora mountain. Apart from the car, police also recovered a Techno mobile phone and a ZRP FN Rifle loaded with four rounds of ammunition. Last week, driving the white Toyota Allion, Muvhevhi arrived at the apostolic sect shrine at 2.30pm where members had congregated for their Friday prayers, and immediately pulled out a firearm and shot at the sect’s leaders from point blank range. He then attacked policemen who had heeded a distress call. The lone gunman then shot and killed the Hwedza Police Station officer-in-charge and seriously injured another police officer. From there, Muvhevhi drove his vehicle to Mukamba Business Centre where he shot and killed another person, before speeding off.

POLICE have intensified the manhunt for Jaison Muvhevhi who allegedly shot and killed three people in Wedza on Friday.

Muvhevhi, who is a former Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer shot and killed a “prophet” from an apostolic sect church before fatally shooting a senior police officer and seriously injured another, who had come to attend to the scene.

He allegedly shot and killed another person at a nearby shopping centre.

The officer who was injured is said to be in a critical condition and is admitted at a local hospital.

As investigations and a hunt for him continues, police yesterday located him in Chiduku area near Rusape, where it is alleged, a fierce shoot out ensued.

It is alleged during the intense exchange of gunfire, Muvhevhi felt the heat and abandoned his Toyota Allion vehicle and escaped on foot.

He is alleged to have fled into the nearby mountain and left a gun in the vehicle.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the hunt for the suspect is ongoing.

“He is not yet arrested. The suspect fled and left his vehicle and a gun he had taken from the officers. He was located in Chiduku. It is not true that he has been arrested.”

Citizens in Namibia condemn in absolute terms the arbitrary arrest of Hon Amos Chibaya and other change champions in Budiriro, Harare . We demand their immediate release from Budiriro Police Station since the right to assemble is enshrined in the 2013 Constitution. ZANU-PF should stop manipulating the police. The police must be independent, they should not take instructions from the satanic regime which had run scared of the impending watershed elections.

This weaponization of the law by the clueless regime is a clear testament that ZANU-PF has sunken into oblivion. Banning our political rallies, arbitrary arrests, long pre-trial detentions, and closure of democratic space shall never cow us into submission. Change champions in Namibia continue to call for action demanding an abrupt end to the continued incarceration of Hon Job Saro Wiwa Sikhala who has spent close to seven months in the hell-hole of Chikurubi Maximum Prison on trumped-up charges.

It’s time to brace for dangerous freedom against this attempt to stifle constitutional democracy in the motherland. It is not a crime to support the alternative government led by none other than the organic and pragmatic Change Champion in Chief President Advocate Nelson Chamisa. 2023 is our certified year of the much-awaited revolutionary victory for social democrats in Zimbabwe.

Sadly, the purported protectors are the ones who are perpetrating violence by throwing tear smoke on the innocent change champions. The captured police assaulted Hon Machingauta’s wife and daughter in their quest to disperse change champions who had gathered as part of Mugwazo. Securocrats should perform their constitutional duties without interference from the executive. ZANU-PF is now panicking ahead of the harmonized elections which is why they are sponsoring violence across the breadth and lengths of the motherland. Recently, the gray change champions were brutally assaulted by ZANU-PF in Mrehwa North.

We demand free, fair, credible, and unfettered elections in July.

Former Brighton player and Zambian international Enock Mwepu has reportedly been rushed to hospital after collapsing due to a suspected heart attack.

According to reports in Zambia, the incident occurred while he was driving towards Kabangwe, a small town on the outskirts of Lusaka, and his car was seen swerving on a major road. He eventually parked, and came out of the vehicle and fell.

The midfielder taken to the hospital in the Zambian capital and is said to be in a relatively stable condition.

Mwepu was forced to retire at the age of 24 after being diagnosed with a rare hereditary heart condition.

The diagnosis followed after the former midfielder fell ill while on a flight to link up with his Chipolopolo teammates in the international break last month and spent a period in hospital in Mali. He returned to England to undergo further cardiac tests and has been advised to stop playing football.

THE Kudzanayi Primary School head, who was accused of sending his nude picture to his married personal assistant is now under investigation.

James Mukwirimba, appeared before Highglen District Schools Inspector, Joseph Kabasa, yesterday.

Kabasa told H-Metro that they are yet to ascertain what exactly happened.

Among the witnesses called were Mukwirimba’s personal assistant, Privilege Zhou, and her husband Crispen Zhou.

Another married teacher alleged to have been sexually abused by Mukwirimba was also among the witnesses.

Mukwirimba sent Privilege his nude picture via WhatsApp and she showed it to her husband, Crispen.
