Know About Malaria Prevention And Treatment

Key facts

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.

It is preventable and curable.

In 2021, there were an estimated 247 million cases of malaria worldwide.
The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 619 000 in 2021.
The WHO African Region carries a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2021, the region was home to 95% of malaria cases and 96% of malaria deaths. Children under 5 accounted for about 80% of all malaria deaths in the Region.
Overview

Malaria is an acute febrile illness caused by Plasmodium parasites, which are spread to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. There are 5 parasite species that cause malaria in humans, and 2 of these species – P. falciparum and P. vivax – pose the greatest threat. P. falciparum is the deadliest malaria parasite and the most prevalent on the African continent. P. vivax is the dominant malaria parasite in most countries outside of sub-Saharan Africa.

The first symptoms – fever, headache and chills – usually appear 10–15 days after the infective mosquito bite and may be mild and difficult to recognize as malaria. Left untreated, P. falciparum malaria can progress to severe illness and death within a period of 24 hours.

In 2021, nearly half of the world’s population was at risk of malaria. Some population groups are at considerably higher risk of contracting malaria and developing severe disease: infants, children under 5 years of age, pregnant women and patients with HIV/AIDS, as well as people with low immunity moving to areas with intense malaria transmission such as migrant workers, mobile populations and travellers.

Disease burden
According to the latest World malaria report, there were 247 million cases of malaria in 2021 compared to 245 million cases in 2020. The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 619 000 in 2021 compared to 625 000 in 2020.

Over the 2 peak years of the pandemic (2020–2021), COVID-related disruptions led to about 13 million more malaria cases and 63 000 more malaria deaths.

The WHO African Region continues to carry a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2021 the Region was home to about 95% of all malaria cases and 96% of deaths. Children under 5 years of age accounted for about 80% of all malaria deaths in the Region.

Four African countries accounted for just over half of all malaria deaths worldwide: Nigeria (31.3%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (12.6%), United Republic of Tanzania (4.1%) and Niger (3.9%).

Prevention
Over the last 2 decades, expanded access to WHO-recommended malaria prevention tools and strategies – including effective vector control and the use of preventive antimalarial drugs – has had a major impact in reducing the global burden of this disease.

Vector control
Vector control is a vital component of malaria control and elimination strategies as it is highly effective in preventing infection and reducing disease transmission. The 2 core interventions are insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS).

Progress in global malaria control is threatened by emerging resistance to insecticides among Anopheles mosquitoes. As described in the latest World malaria report, other threats to ITNs include insufficient access, loss of nets due to the stresses of day-to-day life outpacing replacement, and changing behaviour of mosquitoes, which appear to be biting early before people go to bed and resting outdoors, thereby evading exposure to insecticides.

Preventive chemotherapies
Preventive chemotherapy is the use of medicines, either alone or in combination, to prevent malaria infections and their consequences. It requires giving a full treatment course of an antimalarial medicine to vulnerable populations (generally infants, children under 5 years of age and pregnant women) at designated time points during the period of greatest malarial risk, regardless of whether the recipients are infected with malaria.

Preventive chemotherapy includes perennial malaria chemoprevention (PMC), seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC), intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy (IPTp) and school-aged children (IPTsc), post-discharge malaria chemoprevention (PDMC) and mass drug administration (MDA).

These safe and cost-effective strategies are intended to complement ongoing malaria control activities, including vector control measures, prompt diagnosis of suspected malaria, and treatment of confirmed cases with antimalarial medicines.

Vaccine
Since October 2021, WHO also recommends broad use of the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine among children living in regions with moderate to high P. falciparum malaria transmission.

The vaccine has been shown to significantly reduce malaria, and deadly severe malaria, among young children.

Chinamasa Oils Zanu PF Violence machinery

By- Zanu PF senior advisor and the party’s acting CEO, Patrick Chinamasa, Wednesday hosted his Youth League national executives, where he told them to defend the ruling party ahead of elections.

Whenever senior Zanu PF members hold such meetings and send this message, the result is the escalation of violence against opposition members.

“Since the Youth League is the vanguard of the party, I know you are quite aware that this year is a year of historic elections,” he told the workshop held in the capital this afternoon.

“This workshop should, therefore, be used as a solid foundation to prepare you in coming up with effective youth mobilisation strategies ahead of the 2023 harmonised elections,” Chinamasa emphasised.

This workshop comes a few days after Zanu PF members in Mrewa butchered elderly members of the opposition CCC.

The police only issued a statement promising to arrest these well-known Zanu PF thugs.

Mnangagwa Militarises Nursing, Criminalizes Picketing

By- The Emmerson Mnangagwa administration has militarized the health profession while simultaneously criminalizing industrial action by health workers.

The undemocratic law stipulates that health workers can no longer embark on industrial action lasting more than three days. It further says that even during such job action, they must continue providing emergency services.

Under this draconian statute assented to by the Mnangagwa last week, health workers now have their own independent commission, the Health Services Commission, to set their conditions of service as the old Health Services Board was upgraded to a full commission.
Health workers are now independent of the Public Services Commission and that autonomy, shared by the judiciary, defence forces and police, means their conditions of service can be more easily tailored to fit their work.
Since most of the commission members will come from a health background, it can better understand their grievances and work out ways of dealing with them.
The new commission has the normal powers of a top-level commission in Government. It appoints qualified and competent persons to hold posts and grades in the health service; it creates those grades in the health service and fixes conditions of service for its members; it exercises ultimate control over members of the services, and is the disciplinary authority; and critically it has the function to investigate grievances and to remedy the grievances of members of the health service concerning official acts or omissions.
The new Act says the commission shall consist of the chairperson, who must be the chairperson of the Public Service Commission, a deputy chairperson appointed by the President upon the recommendation of the Minister of Health and Child Care and a minimum of two and a maximum of five other members appointed by the President upon recommendation from the Health Minister. This allows a majority of the commission to come from people who have a detailed understanding of the needs of the health service.
The restrictions on the health workers right to strike are contained in Section 16A of the new Act which says health services shall be deemed an essential service as defined in the Constitution.
“Notwithstanding anything in the Labour Act, the Health Service shall be deemed as an essential service referred to in section 65(3) of the Constitution. No collective job action, whether lawful or unlawful, shall continue for an uninterrupted period of 72 hours or for more than 72 hours in any given 14-day period and notice of any collective job action must be given in writing 48 hours prior to the commencement of such collective job action.”
The amendment comes down hard on the leadership of the health workers unions or associations who breach this. Anyone inciting or organizing collective job action in defiance of the new conditions can be tried for a criminal offence and if found guilty fined up to level four or jailed for six months.
The new law also says a member of the Health Service is under an obligation, whilst employed by the Health Services Commission, to provide the professional skill, expertise, care and service expected of them as a member of the profession to which they belong. Even during any collective job action, they must to provide the skill, expertise, care and service to patients in a medical emergency or needing critical or intensive care.
If the Health Service Commission alleges that an individual member is in breach of the new provisions, it shall communicate a written complaint against that member to the appropriate disciplinary authority in accordance with the law. The function of the law is to remove long-term strikes from the health service, but at the same time upgrade the mechanisms to identify and resolve grievances so that the pressure for industrial action is drastically diminished.

CCC Legislator Vows To Effect Citizen Arrest On Murewa Zanu PF Thugs

By Jane Mlambo| Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislator Prince Dubeko Sibanda has threated to effect citizen arrest on suspected Zanu PF thugs who were recently filmed terrorizing Murewa villagers for gathering for an opposition meeting.

This follows police statement yesterday reporting that they had arrested a 67 year old man in connection with the violence that has riled local and international human rights activists and organisations.

“In cases where it’s clear that ZRP doesn’t want to carry out its duty, it leaves us with no option but to do CITIZENS’ ARREST. We’re coming for the real culprits. No to PRANKS!,” said Sibanda.

In a video that made rounds on social media, a group of thugs linked to the ruling party descended on elderly CCC supporters who had convened a meeting at one of the member’s house, brutalizing them for siding with the opposition.

Two of the CCC members reportedly sustained injuries and were admitted at a local medical facility.

ARTUZ 2023 Term 1 Situational Report

The 2023 schools first term is now in session and it has begun on a very tricky note. The term opens amid the expectation of government delivering on its promise of free education. Despite the high hopes , reality on the ground says otherwise.

Reports across our provincial boundaries indicate that student attendance was 71% for boarding students in private schools and 60% boarding students in government schools. In rural areas especially in Masvingo there was low teacher and learner attendance because of the anticipated harsh weather conditions. In terms of preparedness, schools are at zero because most schools rely on Beam funds which were only disbursed for first term of 2022. Teacher preparedness is low due to incapacitation against a hyperinflatory environment.

Teacher attendance also varied between urban schools and rural schools. In settings like Chitungwiza, attendance for both teachers and learners was high despite that learners were turned back home because of fees arrears which later reduced pupils attendance. This also had an effect on the learning activity as most teachers did not deliver lessons in the absence of the majority of students.

The economic hardships and anticipated harsh weather conditions have been major factors affecting access to education in the first week of 2023 term 1 . The situation exposed the lie in government’s promises of free education.

Most learners from vulnerable backgrounds depend on BEAM funds . Government also claimed to have rolled out free education through provision of tuition grants. But we can’t call that free education because where there is free education learning for all without bracketed funding.

Thence , at the beginning of term 1 in 2023 the government has been exposed for its failure to deliver free education and poor remuneration has further made it hard for teachers in marginalized communities to attend work or has also been a form of demotivation.

To add more , the nation wide transport crisis resulting from failure of the ZUPCO monopoly has also contributed. The collapse of the ZUPCO franchise led to creation of unregulated shadowy cartels like ZIPTA , ZUDAC and GHACO which clandestinely influence and implement transport fare hikes on account of either demand or weather conditions. For example travelling from Chitungwiza during rainy days ranges from a dollar and fifty cents to two dollars for a trip that cost a dollar on average and normal circumstances.

The general observation is poor policy planning and myopic decision making in managing the economy has further marginalized the workers and disadvantaged the consumers of service like learners.

Therefore we recommend that government curbs corruption , improves increase budgeting for social services to reduce inequalities and improve access among citizens. Lastly we still demand that government restores our 2018 Pre-October Salaries of USD 540 such that teachers match the standard cost of living and attend work inorder to ensure that learners are not prejudiced .

The development led to her husband vanishing and Manchester Police raising an alert for his whereabouts.

Tendai Maturure is the missing Manchester Zimbabwean, Patrick Mukanganise’s wife, and her husband’s Facebook account Tuesday posted a black dot with no further detail.

Makanganise, who went missing on 30 Dec 2022, is the “victim” of a witchcraft attack (see transcript of the consultation at the bottom of the article) supposedly performed by his wife who wants him to “get stupid” so that she can date another man, according some leaked audio recordings.

The Manchester Police community appeal

While it could not be ascertained if the poster is trully Makanganise himself, several people were on Tuesday reaching out to him offering help.

“Sending love, hope you are okay,” said Kirsty Murray, while others were more direct.

“We love you isuuu,” wrote Ivy Muriva.

Another, Tendai Shona Tsopota, revealed Makanganise has been found. He wrote thanking Manchester Police saying, “wow wow thank YOU GOD,
My Jesus you’re great.

Right now we can now talk.”

Tendai Mukanganise: “Good day Sekuru, you said you will put my pic into the pot, with the tree, but the issue is of this person who says he likes me, but he hasn’t proposed. So how will this work out in the future?

Sekuru Tembo: When I mean I have put the man into the sack, I mean that I will have pleaded and chanted out using his totem (African surname), so that he starts only thinking about you.

“Putting him into the sack is so that he becomes stupid, all he does is to think about you. Do you still need to understand more?

Tendai Mukanganise: “I was only told by my friend that Sekuru Tembo puts someone into a sack; But I had no clue what it means. What I am asking you is so that you cause this man who left me, get totally and forever sedated, that is, mad, you trap him up so that his life fails for good, and this Nigerian must be tuned up for me (become interested in me).

Sekuru Tembo: Not a problem amaMoyo; but right now I have people knocking on my door, they want me to help them with a chidhoma matter affecting someone. I don’t know what time you go to work. Let me talk to them.”

“We received the shocking news of the passing on of one of the renowned medical doctors and we are still to comprehend it. He reacted after being stung by some insects (wasps) on Sunday morning and upon admission he was pronounced dead,’ said Dr Ngwenya
He said it was important for members of the public to have emergency boxes in case of such conditions.
“The condition gives you very minimum time to resuscitate so I am encouraging members of the public to have emergency boxes so that we can be able to use them in such scenarios,” he said.
Dr Zengeza was instrumental in mentoring young medical practitioners in the province and the country at large.
He is the immediate past president of ZIMA Midlands Province.
He will be buried at his rural Marondera on Thursday.

Famous Prophet Deserts Wife For A Slay Queen

By-A self-proclaimed Chitungwiza prophet divided his church after he abandoned his wife of eighteen years and married a younger woman from his church.

The cleric, Ezekiel Masiyandima (44), of Ebenezer Prophetic Ministries, left his wife Portia Chiwanga (38), for his 21-year-old congregant, Melania Madamombe.

A significant number of congregants are reportedly boycotting church services in protest over Masiyandima’s move.

H-Metro reports that Masiyandima confirmed that he had married Melania because Portia accused him of dabbling in witchcraft after his visit to the late Nigerian pastor, T.B. Joshua’s church, and the mysterious deaths of three of their children. He said:

It’s true that I have separated with Portia because she has been accusing me of using juju.

Arikunditi ndakaromba zvichitevera rufu rwevana vedu nenzira yaasina kunzwisisa.

She would attack me for my visits to Nigeria to see Prophet TB Joshua and also my last visit to see TB Joshua’s wife.

Her parents misled her into believing white garment prophets and those are the ones who gave falsehoods about the causes of our children’s deaths.

Portia ended up not attending church to engage in cross-border trading, so we are no longer together and she is the one feeding church members with falsehoods.

Yes, I have married one of our church members called Melania saka yanetsa iyoyo.

Portia told the publication that she regretted marrying the man of the cloth, alleging he is a womaniser, abuser, drunkard, and crook. She said:

I endured being the wife of someone who claims to be a prophet. Ezekiel would come home drunk and assault me for no reason.

He would take his time to devise ways to take church members’ money and opened a new Ecocash line for that.

Instead of building my faith in God, Ezekiel hardened my heart and dampened my faith and spirit, and I now regret the years I lived as his wife.

God blessed us with five children, but three of them died mysteriously and I do not rule out his so-called mysterious prayers.

He has turned to younger women and I am told he is now living with one woman he is yet to pay lobola for.

Ezekiel never paid any cent to my parents for lobola for the past 18 years. With five children, you would expect such a person to be a responsible father and prophet.

But he is comfortable finding ways of manipulating church members to help him pay lobola for his new young wife.

Police Arrest “Well Known Innocent Man” Over Murehwa Violence

By A Correspondent | Zimbabwe Republic Police officers have arrested a man who the Murehwa Community says is innocent of last week’s violence against elders, who are members of the CCC party.

ZRP cops- file copy

The police arrested Mr Moreso Chimutashu saying he is expected in court soon.

Murehwa villagers however told ZimEye the well known Chimutashu did not touch anyone.

The police has to date failed to arrest ZANU PF youth Mr Dominic Dominic Mavhere who has been positively identified by villagers to be physically responsible. (see interview).

“Moreso Chimutashu haana munhu waakarova,” said one elder.

They continued saying,
“We want culprits arrested, vapfanha vakarova vanhu ndovarikufanhirwa kusungwa [the youths who assaulted people are the ones to answer for their crimes, not Mutashu] not that already dying Chimutashu.”

Another said, among those who were assaulting people last Friday there is no one who is near the 50 age marker, they are all young.
“Vairova vanhu pavideo apo hapana kana angave ne50ys vadiki vese…,” they told ZimEye

DJ Fantan Backs Zanu PF, Pokes Gaffa’s Nose

By-Zimdanchall music promotor, DJ Fantan, has joined the ruling party in denouncing dancehall King Winky D, for speaking truth to power.

DJ Fantan, real name Arnold Kamudyariwa, said the Gaffa President threw young musicians under the bus by allegedly using them on his latest album to propagate a political message and then dumping them.

Winky D recently released a new album titled “Eureka” on which he collaborated with several young artistes, among them Holy Ten on the song “Ibotso”.
Holy Ten has since said he regrets collaborating with Winky on the song which he said has been politicised.
Without mentioning Winky D by name, DJ Fantan said he was pained by the fact that he groomed the young musicians who were allegedly used and then dumped by the Zimdancehall chanter.
He said it was wrong for Winky D to use the young musicians under the guise of assisting them knowing he had a hidden agenda.
Fantan claimed that Winky D is currently in Dubai with his family enjoying the funds he was given for the political project, in an apparent reference to “Ureka”. He wrote on Facebook:
Ndanga ndanzwa nevanhu vachiti ko sei ndakanyara iye mukuru akabuditsa dambarefu. Vamwe ndai ignore but since mibvunzo yawanda here is my point of view.
Yes, I was excited to hear about the project. I was happy to see other artistes featuring for once pama gitare emukuru.
This time he included other artists which was a dream come true for all of us, vaida kuonawo chimuti chichitambidzanwa from one generation to another and to see two generations combining.
But sa elder mu industry when you do certain projects you must enlighten the youths you engage zvizere kuti project riri funded and tave kuimba zvematongerwo enyika so that anopinda achida nemoyo wake munyaya dzacho.
Ini ndiri kutaura se munhu aka groomer and aka mentor most of the youths vari pa project iroro.
Zvirikundirwadza to see them crying behind the scenes kuti takakandwa pasi pe bhazi nemukuru wedu kumagitare.
Right now mukuru vaya vari ku Dubai ku Holiday ne family yavo zvavo zvakaita. Isusu now tava pama1 because some companies no longer want to associate with us because they dont want their brands associated ne politics of any nature.
As elders ibasa redu to groom, guide and protect vana. Its cruel kuti as an elder in a position yekuvimbiwa nevana unozovaitisa uchiziva kuti yako life irikufamba.
This is my opinion hapana daka feel free to have your own opinion.
Anyway, have a blessed day to everyone. God bless you all. Together, tirimurudo rwemazvokwadi, we can take Zim music to the world.

Soccer Star Bitten To Death By Own Dogs

South African authorities have confirmed former Zambia international Philemon Mulala’s death after he was attacked by own dogs at his house in Lichtenburg, North West, on Saturday.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Sam Tselanyane said the incident happened during the night when there was no electricity in the area.

Tselanyane added the deceased’s wife was the first to notice the incident before calling for help.

“She didn’t bother to go and check what was wrong as their house is situated on a busy street, and the dogs are frequently barking at pedestrians and vehicles passing by,” Tselanyane told News24.com.

He added: “Moreover, after electricity was restored, she allegedly went inside the house looking for her husband, but could not find him.

“Upon continuing with the search, the woman saw her husband lying motionless outside in the garden. She then quickly went outside only to find that her husband was bitten by their dogs, two staffie/pit bull crossings and one unknown breed dog.”

After the police and Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) arrived, the victim was certified dead at the scene.

Mulala played in South Africa for Cape Town Spurs and Dynamos. He made six national team appearances for Zambia in the late 1980s.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Malaria Prevention And Treatment

Mnangagwa’s Done Far Better Than Ian Smith: Mavaza

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | Each time we get closer to elections we have members of the opposition comparing ZANU PF to the Ian Smith rule. I always struggle with anger each time I hear some Zimbabweans wishing to go back to smith. So many times I have heard many misguided comments glorifying Ian Smith.

I have heard a number of CCC supporters asking” that person who was accused of selling Zimbabwe has he got a buyer yet?” Some will be saying war vets must go and bind Zimbabwe where it was bound before freedom. Today I will not concentrate on the evils of colonialism. I will dwell on that later.

We have heard people saying Smith was a genius and that he managed to run Rhodesia successfully despite being under sanctions. They try to make smith look like a sort of a hero and praise his manoeuvres.

The United Nations Security Council in 1966 took a historic step, of sorts. For the first time in its 21 years of existence, it resorted to mandatory economic sanctions to try to bring down a government of Rhodesia. Object of the sanctions was Ian Smith’s white-supremacist regime in Rhodesia, which has been deplored as an international renegade ever since it broke away from British rule in 1965. By a vote of 11 to 0—with four abstentions—the council declared an international embargo on 90% of Rhodesia’s exports, forbade the U.N.’s 122-member nations to sell oil, arms, motor vehicles or airplanes to the rebel territory or to provide it with any form of “financial or other economic aid.”
For all its apparent toughness, the resolution calling for sanctions seemed to lack the teeth necessary to enforce them. Voted down was an amendment to penalize nations that ignore the boycott. The Security Council, in fact, left it up to each member nation to police its own trade with Rhodesia.
What we must remember is that a week after the sanctions South Africa, which supplied most of Rhodesia’s oil and was its principal trading partner, announced that it had no intention of obeying the resolution. Without South African cooperation, the sanctions were doomed to fail. Simply the sanctions became cosmetic.
The resolution was defective. It was a sanction without a sanction a law without a penalty.
Genuine people who wanted to see Rhodesia punished like Russia’s Nikolai Fedorenko. who picked up some political change in Africa by abstaining—along with Bulgaria and Mali—on the ground that the sanctions did not go far enough and Nigeria all protested about the lack
Of teeth.
To render the sanctions useless France abstained from voting, but for a different reason: in the opinion of General de Gaulle, Rhodesia is strictly a British problem and outside U.N. jurisdiction despite his thinking he continued trading with Rhodesia despite the sanctions.

The British, who sponsored the resolution in the first place, had no such qualms. Having displayed their outraged morality by calling for sanctions, their main concern was to steer the Security Council away from any action that would lead to an economic confrontation with South Africa, Britain’s fourth largest customer and main supplier of gold. The U.S. went along with Britain. Hoping that even a leaky embargo might somehow bring Rhodesia to its senses, it voted with the majority to approve the resolution.
So Rhodesia was on sanctions only on paper and not in reality.
This can not be compared to Zimbabwe. Sanctions against Zimbabwe were accompanied with penalties. Zimbabwe got its sanctions when America was more powerful and controlling the world arena.
Rhodesia managed to escape the biting of sanctions mostly because it was supported by South Africa which was its major trade partner and partner in crime. They were both racist who believed in white supremacy. It had unwavering support of Israel, Chile, France, Japan, Taiwan, Belgium, Switzerland. In actual fact there was a host of countries that pretended to be ‘neutral.’ In real life they supported the racist regime because they were racist themselves. No white nation wanted to see Rhodesia drifting back to its black owners. Many whites in France and England had made Zimbabwe their second home and saw it as an escape route to run away from a new wave of equality.
In unity with world racists it became easier to bust sanctions. Sanctions busting was done via South Africa,Switzerland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Taipei, Tel a Viv and a host of other like minded countries. South Africa literally took over industries and would sell Rhodesian products as their own products.
Through Rhodesia South Africa was producing radios, TV sets under WRS IP in Bulawayo. Guy Georgias was producing truck trailers called Italian Coach builders but this was done in Masasa Salisbury. The trailers passed as Italian products so they never stood the test of time. David Whitehead was producing material, clothes and blankets. National Blankets was producing blankets and jerseys inBulawayo which in turn were sold as products from South Africa. . Rhodesia had heavy industries based mainly on Bulawayo, Gwelo and the Great Dyke towns of Kwekwe, Gatooma, Sinoia as they were called then which were passing their products as South African Products thereby busting the sanctions.

Rhodesia Light Infantry which controlled Rhodesia Defence Industires produced grenades, mortars, bullets and scatter bombs. Armoured vehicles were manufactured in Rhodesia, under Paramount licence. All these passed as products of France and Italy thereby beating the sanctions.

Peugeot, Citroen, Mazda, Nissan assembled cars in Mutare and Harare. African CoachBuilders built bus frames and assembled buses in the country. DAF assembled buses in the country in Masasa where all these were sold as French products.
Rhodesia Railways had the biggest machining and repair facility in the country. Rhodesia had the most sophisticated railway network outside South Africa and the world was benefitting from this so no country was willing to apply sanctions against Rhodesia.
What was the centre of all this were the capital markets that were the most advanced outside South Africa.
Contrary to the declaration in 1966 by the British Prime Minister Harold Wilson promising the African states at the Commonwealth Summit in Lagos that recently imposed sanctions would bring down the minority Rhodesian regime in ‘weeks, not months the Rhodesian government was technically not on sanctions. Rhodesia’s survival, years later,
was ipso facto proof, for popular opinion as well as for many scholars, that
‘sanctions don’t work if the other countries are not supporting them. Zimbabwe is independent now, but Rhodesian sanctions have not been a major subject of inquiry for some years until the puppets in the CCC and MDC and it’s sections started comparing Rhodesia to Zimbabwe.
Writing in 1978, Strack claimed that not only were Rhodesian sanctions
‘ineffective’ in terms of securing policy objectives, they were possibly “counter-productive’, causing ‘the deterioration of a situation they were designed to alleviate’ Political
success has not been forthcoming’ as a result of the Rhodesian embargo, ‘despite sanctions having some very damaging economic results’ Rhodesia was technically under threat of sanctions but not under sanctions.

IMPOSITION of sanctions has been regarded as a measure to punish or cripple a government or country that has ‘defied’ the norms of relations among countries. The Rhodesian government was subjected to economic sanctions which included an oil embargo. As a form of coercion, sanctions on Rhodesia proved they (sanctions) could not be imposed collectively.
The sanctions were futile as Rhodesia continued to enjoy the position it always had.
Rhodesia became an example of the ineffectiveness of sanctions as long as there were countries willing to work with the sanctioned. This did not make Ian Smith a genius it is only in the mind of the slow thinkers that Rhodesia survived.

Both Mozambique, which was under Portuguese rule, and apartheid South Africa played a role in ensuring that Rhodesia did not suffer. This extra help is lacking in Zimbabwe’s situation today.
Instead of crippling the ‘errant’ Rhodesia, the white minority rule continued thriving while the black majority suffered.

This is what those in the opposition embrace and always want you to go back to that situation.
The ineffective sanctions can be blamed for the bloody liberation struggle that claimed thousands of blacks who died in Rhodesian genocidal attacks such as the Chimoio and Nyadonia massacres.
Had the sanctions been effective, Africans would not have taken up arms to free themselves.
Sanctions imposed on Rhodesia did nothing to change the mindset of the Ian Smith regime, instead it gave it the false belief that minority rule would go on for a thousand years as announced by smith in 1977.
It is common knowledge that the effectiveness of sanctions is dependent upon relations of nations and sincerity in their imposition of the same.

Many companies like Dairiboard, Lylons Maid made ice cream, UHT milk, cheese and other dairy products which had a very large market. At that time Rhodesia was the biggest producer of tobacco in the world. RSR made all the sugar required in the country and exported to the rest of Central Africa.

National Foods made flour, mealie meal and a host of grains from local markets.
There is simply no comparison between the qualities and successes of Rhodesia and its political successor, Zimbabwe. From 1949 there was successively success in the Nyasaland Protectorate, the Federation of Rhodesia & Nyasaland, the Republic of Malawi, and the Republic of Rhodesia. What has Zimbabwe achieved? Mugabe inherited nothing that is there today. Even though Zimbabwe is The Jewel of Africa.’

And so it is still. Rhodesia was the breadbasket of sub Saharan Africa until Sanctions made it, the basket case of Africa! As a result of world sanctions being imposed by all but adhered to by now including South Africa and Portugal, Rhodesia greatly increase her industrial and economic output, and in this she was made to be successful, even to manufacturing her own vehicles, locomotives, weapons, and the countless other essential products and items of a modern, first world state. All these were sold abroad despite the sanctions.
However, Sanctions Double-Cross Oil to Rhodesia shows that the sanctions were not wholeheartedly enforced and did not cripple Rhodesia.
Britain, America and French companies, as non-state actors, played a role in keeping Rhodesia afloat.
Through British and American companies such as Total, Mobil, Shell and BP, Rhodesia obtained fuel supplies that kept the brutal regime going.
The companies flouted international law with the connivance of their governments which knew and let it be as they benefitted from the money made by these entities.
to show their hypocrisy the international oil companies, British, American or French, would do nothing against the guidance from their respective governments, but that in defence of their own interests they would welcome an excuse to plead the inefficiency of sanctions.
Rhodesia was helped to keep on oppressing and exploiting blacks by companies from nations that purported to be reviled by the actions of Ian Smith.
“What can be proved through concrete data … is that some months later the British companies were leading in the supplies to Rhodesia.
Clearly the sanctions were a sham and the Rhodesians cannot boast they survived sanctions because in reality, the embargo did not exist.
They were merely sanctions on paper.
Sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU) and the US under ZDERA are a typical example of real sanctions meant to suffocate and totally destroy a nation, unjustified as they are.
The sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe cannot be compared to those on Rhodesia because the Rhodies were kith and kin to the British and the British directly benefitted from Rhodesian operations.
However, in Zimbabwe, the Land Reform Programme for example meant that the British could not continue exploiting the country.
“It was no longer a case of flouting sanctions. Everybody wanted to keep their place in the market.
Lest we forget that Anglo American Corporation ran huge enterprises from smelters to mines. Risco Steel produced all the mild steel and specialised steel sections for the mining, construction and manufacturing industry, the rest came from Iscor. Rhodesia produced ethanol before any other country on the continent. Small volumes but enough to project into a big industry post independence.
And we exported maize to the world. Arenel, Lobels, Charhons, Schweppes, were huge factories exporting to Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania yet these companies were British owned.
It should be further noted that
Delta Corporation was the largest listed enterprise on the RSE. Anglo American was not listed to avoid conflict.
Bata Shoe Company exported shoes back to parent company in Canada. CSC exported beef to the European countries. ESC manufactured transformers, sun stations and base equipment. The mining industry bought equipment made during sanctions in Rhodesia.

Hendricks Chibuku Breweries was a grand enterprise spanning entire country, sponsoring soccer and athletics. Employing thousands of people nation wide.

Rhodesia Broadcasting Corporation employed over 5 000 people in studios at Pockets Hill, Montrose studios. The Reserve Bank was a huge employer, minting coins and printing notes that actually bought something.
In all this the wealth was measured against the mouths it fed. That’s were most of our people get lost.
Rhodesia during all this time was keeping the interest of the minority. All they got they only shared with the minority. This was only 4000 people sharing the country’s wealth.
Zimbabwe now has a mandate to look after I lover fifteen million people.
The sanctions in Zimbabwe are real and comparing it to Rhodesia is diabolic and idiotic.
The Rhodesian period resulted in the creation of the best educated white people on the continent. But Mugabe and ZANU PF Should take the credit for this.
Those ignorant of the facts would say : “What did we fight for? It was better under Smith!”
This is nonsense. Nothing could be further from the truth. People must not confuse Rhodesia with Zimbabwe! The Smith government was NEVER better than ZANU PF government. It is certainly true that Rhodesia could not survive indefinitely in the face of pressure from ZANU and the people of Zimbabwe. Those that criticise Zimbabwe government have missed the whole point of this very deliberate choice, just as they missed the significance of the choice of April 18th 1980 date for the Declaration of Independence.

Zimbabwe is the only country we can call ours. Let us vote ZANU PF for peace and tranquility.

Chamisa Pleads For Patience As Zanu PF Butchers His Followers

By- Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has called restive followers to be patient, claiming his party had a solid response to the country’s myriad challenges.

The opposition leader was responding to party followers who branded him docile after recently appearing to have taken a back seat in his opposition politics.

CCC followers were frustrated by Chamisa’s silence after the savage attack on a group of elderly villagers who were found last week by some militant suspected Zanu-PF supporters meeting in politically volatile Murehwa, Mashonaland East province.

CCC sympathisers inundated Chamisa’s Twitter thread with direct criticism over the former cabinet minister’s failure to provide cutting edge leadership and allowing Zanu-PF to bully opposition loyalists.
But in a video he recorded Monday and circulated via social media platforms, Chamisa called on his supporters not to despair, adding that he had something up his sleeve to overhaul the country’s multi-faceted mess.
“I know that many people have been worried, concerned, anxious; ‘what is really happening, why is it that you are not saying much, you are not doing much’.
“Tell you what, we are doing a lot. The definition of action cannot be limited to what people see…you will see with the passage of time.
“We have done a lot and a lot is being done. This year is going to be an excellent year,” he said.
Chamisa said his party will soon be announcing plans for 2023, a year the country is headed for high stakes elections.
“We are going to be announcing the programmes of the year in due course in our usual traditional annual agenda of the year, the 2023 agenda, we are going to come to you and say what the issues are, what we are going to be emphasising.
“But I can tell you that this year is a wonderful year, this year is your year, this year is a great year and you are going to see amazing things.
“Yes there is going to be a lot of challenges, we are clear about it.
“We have said we don’t invest in noise, we invest in peace. Where others are making noise we are peacemakers; where others are investing in violence, we invest into the peace infrastructure.
“I can tell you that we are national builders, we are change champions, we are going to bring to fruition a new great Zimbabwe.”
He added, “Wherever you are, don’t despair, don’t be disappointed, the future is holding great thing for us. We are going to be breaking news in the whole world.”

ZEC Delimitation Challenger Tonderai Chidawa Goes Missing, Picked By Suspected State Security Agents

A Zanu PF activist who wrote to parliament last week raising objections to a draft delimitation report submitted by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) was seized by state security agents on Monday morning and his whereabouts are unknown, his lawyer said.

Simultaneously, Zimbabwean state security agents accompanied by South African police reportedly raided addresses in Johannesburg looking for Marx Mupungu, another Zanu PF activist whose Constitutional Court application in June last year saved Chief Justice Luke Malaba from removal from office following an earlier ruling by three judges of the High Court who said he had reached retirement age.

Professor Lovemore Madhuku said Tonderai Chidawa was arrested on Monday, a day after he recorded an audio narrating how men claiming to be from the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) visited his residence in Harare and ordered him to accompany them to the main police station.

In the audio, Chidawa said he had barricaded himself inside his flat at the corner of Baines Avenue and Leopold Takawira Street. Chidawa said the agents wanted to know “who sent you to fight ZEC?”

Madhuku told ZimLive late Monday: “I have been informed that he was picked up this morning. He is not yet out.”

In his letter to parliament, Chidawa said the draft delimitation report was not signed by ZEC commissioners and was “not an act of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission as a body corporate.”

“At most, it may be an act of the chairperson of the commission and her deputy,” Madhuku wrote on behalf of Chidawa, a former student leader in the Zanu PF-aligned ZICOSU.

Madhuku said he had also been informed that Mupungu, whom he represented in the Constitutional Court matter, was on a “wanted list.” He did not know what crime he is supposed to have committed.

When the team pursuing Mupungu failed to locate him, they went after his girlfriend who sent out a distress call from her workplace, ZimLive was told.

The orders to arrest Chidawa and Mupungu would have been made at the top of the government, and appeared to have the approval of Acting President Constantino Chiwenga.

Nabbed … Tonderai Chidawa (right) seen with President Emmerson Mnangagwa in this undated photograph
The raids emphasise a growing split within Zanu PF over how to respond to the delimitation of ward and constituency boundaries ahead of general elections due in the second half of this year.

ZEC chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba and her deputy Rodney Simukai Kiwa are facing an open rebellion from seven other commissioners who have refused to sign off on the draft delimitation report claiming it “does not meet the minimum standards expected regarding transparent procedures that strengthen stakeholders’ confidence and dispel potential gerrymandering allegations.”

The rebels, in a letter to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, demanded that the draft delimitation report be “put aside” and that elections should be held using old boundaries from the last delimitation exercise in 2008.

Mnangagwa loyalists led by justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi have reportedly told the Zanu PF leader that the draft delimitation report was a “mathematical exercise” designed to deny him a sweeping parliamentary majority, while boosting the main opposition Citizens Coalition for Change’s electoral chances.

Ziyambi and the powerful justice ministry secretary Virginia Mabhiza allegedly told Mnangagwa that Chiwenga was behind a sophisticated plot to remove him from power after the elections by working with Zanu PF MPs loyal to him and those from the CCC.

The rebel commissioners are reportedly being controlled by the Ziyambi group which favours holding elections using the old boundaries, arguing: “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.”

Chiwenga, meanwhile, is backing Chigumba and in full support of the draft delimitation report. CIO chief Isaac Moyo has also reportedly aligned himself with Chigumba, and by extension Chiwenga.

ZimLive understands discussions have taken place about arresting two ZEC commissioners – Cathering Mpofu and Shepherd Manhivi – who are accused of being the ringleaders of the rebellion against Chigumba.

Mnangagwa loyalists accuse ZEC of collapsing seven constituencies currently occupied by MPs aligned with the Zanu PF leader – Mberengwa South, Bulilima East, Gutu South, Zaka East, Zaka West, Chikomba Central and Musikavanhu.

ZEC, they argue, also systematically moved voters from urban constituencies, the hotbed of opposition support, into neighbouring constituencies held by Zanu PF MPs in sufficient numbers to overhaul the Zanu PF winning margins from 2018.

It is not clear why the Mnangagwa camp blames Chiwenga for the alleged gerrymandering.

A cryptic message posted on Ziyambi’s WhatsApp status on Sunday read: “There are but two parties now – Traitors and Patriots.”

Be Patient With Me, Says Chamisa

Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has called on restive followers to be patient with him claiming his party had a strong response to the country’s myriad challenges.

The opposition leader was responding to party followers who have branded him docile after he recently appeared to have taken a back seat in his opposition politics.

What further frustrated followers was the opposition chief’s apparent failure to take a strong stand against the savage attack on a group of elderly villagers who were last week found by some militant suspected Zanu-PF supporters conducting a CCC meeting in politically volatile Murehwa, Mashonaland East province.

Former Deputy Premier Comments On ZEC Delimitation Report

By Arthur G. O. Mutambara| On Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC)’s Delimitation Report:

Understanding the Import of the Arithmetic of Section 161 (6) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe

Apologies for the late intervention. I was in the village with limited connectivity.

1) The Mangoma and Veritas interventions are saying the same thing. These two positions are essentially correct.

2) The minor arithmetic differences in their numbers for allowable minimum and maximum voters in a constituency are insignificant.

3) Veritas does a great job of identifying the possible source of ZEC’s error.

4) The current Constitution of Zimbabwe’s Section 161 (6) looks similar but is DIFFERENT from Section 61A(6) of the old Lancaster House Constitution of Zimbabwe.

5) Section 161 (6) stipulates that the difference between the allowable minimum and maximum voters in a constituency should be less than 20%, whereas Section 61A (6) (Lancaster Constitution) stipulates that, that difference should be less than 40% (i.e., 20% + 20%).

6) It is important to note that the old Lancaster provision 61A (6) is BETTER phrased than the current provision 161 (6)

7) Section 161 (6) should have explicitly said 10% above or below the average number of voters allowable in a constituency.

Of course, this wording can be implicitly deduced from the current phrasing.

Being explicit could have helped.

8) The delimitation process has to be redone according to Section 161 (6) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

The current Delimitation Report is invalid since it is in violation of the current Constitution of Zimbabwe’s Section 161 (6)

9) Of course, in carrying out the delimitation exercise, there must be no mischievous intention to disadvantage or advantage any political players. There must be safeguards against such shenanigans.

Malaba Says Laywers Mustn’t Use Social Media To Complain

Chief Justice Luke Malaba has attacked lawyers saying solicitors should srop using social media.

The statement is set to affect lawyers like CCC President Nelson Chamisa and most of his senior echelons, who are also leaders over political parties.

Justice Mabala said lawyers who take to social media and other fora to attack judgments that go against their clients when they are aware of legal remedies available to them to address their grievances. Officially opening the 2023 legal year in Harare yesterday, Chief Justice Malaba underscored the need for judicial independence saying it was important for the maintenance of peace, order and the rule of law. He said lawyers were perfectly aware of the legal remedies available if they thought a judgment was incorrect, and while he could understand non-lawyers who lost their cases and blamed the judicial officer, it was a cause for concern when a lawyer, who knew the law, did the same.

The ceremony of the opening of the legal year was held under the theme: “Promoting competence and quality of service to enhance public confidence in the judiciary”. Chief Justice Malaba said it was not the role of the courts to satisfy personal preferences of court users, but instead to follow the law. “The common source of criticism emanated from litigants who would have had court decisions made against them,” Chief Justice Malaba said. “The tendency is to blame lack of judicial competence for the loss. At worst, they allege corruption. “While the tendency to blame a judicial officer for a negative decision is understandable in the case of self-actors who may not be aware of the available remedies for redressing the perceived wrong, it becomes a cause for concern when a legal practitioner, who is an officer of court, is involved.

“It is regrettable conduct for a legal practitioner to go on social media or to assemble a press conference to castigate a decision and insult a judicial officer because he or she made a decision against the legal practitioner’s client. “While constructive and measured criticism of court decisions is welcome and encouraged as it adds value to jurisprudential development, no value is added to the justice delivery system from scandalous attacks on the integrity of judicial officers.” A number of opposition activists, including some who are lawyers, have on numerous occasions attacked the integrity of the courts whenever court decisions go against them. Chief Justice Malaba said it was the duty of judicial officers to provide services to the public in accordance with the law. “It is not part of the duties of officers in the judiciary to satisfy personal needs of court users. Where one is aggrieved by a decision made by the court it is important to rely on legal processes for remedy. Insulting the courts and judicial officers will not help to have the order set aside. “Such conduct has the effect of undermining public confidence in the judiciary. The judiciary is bound by the law to resist insidious pressure to make decisions according to public clamour, contrary to the dictates of the facts and the applicable law,” he said.

Chief Justice Malaba also upheld the right and independence of the National Prosecuting Authority to initiate or decline prosecutions, without pressure from anyone else. He said neither the judiciary nor other State institutions like the police and the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, had any right to direct the National Prosecuting Authority on matters to prosecute or decline prosecution. The Chief Justice said Section 190 of the Constitution required the Judicial Services Commission to act in a fair and transparent manner to retain public confidence. “The need to ensure public confidence and trust in the judicial system is undoubtedly one of the reasons why the JSC must act in a just, fair and transparent manner. “Judicial independence protects the important presumption that the judiciary does not act on instructions from other arms of the State. This, is turn, gives effect to the impartiality of the judicial officers, as they represent an objective standard upon which legal disputes can be adequately addressed,” Chief Justice Malaba said. While co-operation between State entities was welcome, he stressed that the independence of the judiciary must be respected within the constitutional dictates of separation of powers. Law Society of Zimbabwe president Mr Wellington Magaya welcomed the Chief Justice’s stance on preserving judicial independence. “There are two issues that stood out for me, issues of judicial independence, rule of law and quality of justice. As the Law Society we believe that the cornerstone of the delivery of justice is an independent judiciary.

“The Chief Justice has highlighted that this is something that is important. The independence of the judiciary is reflected in its ability to fund its own processes and in the manner it conducts itself. “The commitment from the Chief Justice to address issues of perceptions of bias and independence is welcome on our part because this is an issue that affects the justice delivery system,” Mr Magaya said.- state media

President Chamisa Reveals New Zimbabwe Vision

Tinashe Sambiri|CCC leader President Nelson Chamisa has denounced the harassment and victimisation of elderly people by Zanu PF agents.

CCC supporters were bashed by Zanu PF hooligans in Murewa on Saturday.

Despite the rising incidence of violence, President Chamisa on Sunday urged party supporters and citizens in general to remain calm and composed.

Below is President Chamisa’s statement:

A NEW & GREAT ZIMBABWE MEANS BUSINESS…

We will keep Zimbabwe open 24/7 all days except one. #Isee Zimbabwe’s factories and businesses open all the time upon shifts day and night, not this 8am to 4pm business hours.More will be employed.

It’s business unusual. We are too behind. There is no time.

If you have support why are so violent, so heartless against citizens even the elderly? And why should bases and vigilante groups be allowed around the country? Are we now worse than animals? What leadership is this that invests in violence? Violence is very expensive!

Violence is the weapon used by the desperate and losing! Using violence and intimidation is evidence of defeat, primitivism, savagery and backwardness. Stop it!

Al Nassr Dismiss Aboubakar

Al Nassr have reportedly terminated Vincent Aboubakar’s contract following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Cameroonian will depart the club to make way for Ronaldo’s registration.

Al Nassr’s foreign quota was exhausted and the club couldn’t register more foreign players due to Saudi league rules which require clubs to have a maximum of eight foreigners in their squad.

Earlier reports had suggested that Al Nassr were considering sending Aboubakar to a loan in order to free up space in their foreign quota.

But according to latest rumours in Europe, the Cameroonian has mutually agreed to terminate his contract and will be compensated by the club.

He is now a free agent and can choose his next destination.

Manchester United are reportedly targeting the striker, and a deal could be completed in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo, must complete a two-match suspension before he is eligible to make his debut for Al-Nassr.

The 37-year-old received the ban while still at Manchester United.

He will serve the sanction in the Saudi Pro League based on Article 12.1 of FIFA’s Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players which says:

“Any disciplinary sanction of up to four matches or up to three months that has been imposed on a player by the former association but not yet (entirely) served by the time of the transfer shall be enforced by the new association at which the player has been registered in order for the sanction to be served at domestic level.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Al Nassr Terminate Aboubakar Contract To Create Space For CR7

Businessman Cleared Of Fraud After Investigations

Local businessman Paul Tempter Tungwarara whose name was dragged in the mud over unfounded allegations of defrauding US$2 million, has been cleared with reports believed to have emanated from sources out to soil his image in light of multi-million projects currently underway.
Investigations by ZimEye have established that the same people behind another misleading story published in 2019 claiming that Tungwarara owes them US$4.5 million.

We need to make this clear that the source that brought the story wants to use our publication as a political battle ground to fight their interest against Mr Paul Tempter Tungwarara.

it has since been brought to our attention that Mr Tungwarara is working on multi-million projects that can change lives and our country which have attracted many enemies including those pushing misleading content online.

The same people who brought the story of Mr Tungwarara defrauding them US$ 2 million are the same, In 2019 the team wrote in a newspaper that Tungwarara owe them US$4,5 million and the same so that they extort funds from them. This is coming after a huge investment is coming to Zimbabwe and others that are coming this concludes that they are people that are against the vision of building the country.

Kindly take note that ZimEye does not have interests in this story and cannot be used to fight personal interest or push political agendas for anyone. Our duty is to report factual truth.

Mwonzora Castigates Zanu PF Over Assault Of CCC Elders In Murewa

The opposition MDC-T party led by Manicaland Senator Douglas Mwonzora has denounced the assault of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporters in Murehwa, demanding that authorities investigate and bring the perpetrators to book.

Alleged Zanu-PF activists were on Saturday captured violently attacking some elderly CCC members in Murehwa on allegations of belonging to the opposition and convening a meeting a woman is heard interrogating the victims.

In a statement the MDC demanded that police urgently investigate and arrest the perpetrators.

“Our hearts are with the Murehwa victims of sadistic violence by a group of thugs purporting to be a law unto themselves. We condemn the brutality against opposition supporters as seen on videos circulating on social media.

“The MDC calls upon the Zimbabwe Republic Police to urgently investigate and arrest the alleged perpetrators and allow justice to prevail. The videos show one of the perpetrators arrogantly recording defenceless victims who include a young child.

“Our national Constitution provides for the right to freedom of association as well as full protection by the law. No person is above the law and justice must be served,” the statement reads.

The party said physical violence was a manifestation of verbal abuse towards political opponents.

“In the spirit of rational disputation, we urge all political leaders to foster positive competitiveness and encourage their supporters to exercise restraint. Zimbabwe is for us all.”

Meanwhile, police investigations are still underway.

Police usually confirm receiving political violence reports against Zanu-PF but hardly arrest the perpetrators.

Zanu PF Wars Turn Dirty As State Security Agents Go After ZEC Delimitation Report Challenger

A Zanu-PF activist and former Zicosu president Tonderai Chidawa, who last week challenged the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) preliminary delimitation report, says he is being hounded by suspected State security agents.

Chidawa, through his lawyers Madhuku Legal Practitioners, has claimed that Zec chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba and her deputy Rodney Simukai Kiwa hijacked the preliminary report and that other commissioners were not consulted.

Yesterday, through an audio that he confirmed was his, Chidawa said State security agents have threatened to arrest him.

“Right now my flat is surrounded by Central Intelligence Organisation agents and one calling himself Mwazha. They are asking me why I am challenging Zec,” Chidawa is heard saying in the audio.

The delimitation report tabled in Parliament on Friday last week continues to face headwinds after Chidawa filed an application to the Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda describing the draft as an act of the chairperson of the Commission and her deputy.

Chidawa, who is basing his argument on the fact that seven Zimbabwe electoral commission commissioners reportedly authored a proposal to President Emmerson Mnangagwa to have the report set aside due to various flaws, has threatened to take the matter to court if Parliament does not abide by its constitutional obligation.

Through his lawyers Madhuku Legal Practitioners, Chidawa penned a three-page letter addressed to Mudenda demanding that before the closing of business today Parliament should establish whether the preliminary delimitation report was an act of Zec or not.

According to the letter dated January 7 bearing Parliament’s official stamp as an acknowledgement of receipt, Chidawa intends to approach the courts for appropriate relief, on an urgent basis, should Parliament fail to fulfil its constitutional obligation.

Chidawa alleges that the delimitation report falls short of the constitutional prescriptions that it must be an act of Zec and not individuals.

Chidawa is said to have a document signed by seven Zec Commissioners who claim they were not part of the preliminary delimitation report.

Chidawa also argues that it is Parliament and not the President, that has the constitutional obligation to ensure that only Zec conducts a delimitation ofwards and constituencies and submit a preliminary report to the President.

Efforts to obtain a comment from Zec spokesperson Jasper Mangwana were fruitless as he did not pick up calls nor respond to questions sent to him.

Embarrassed Zanu PF Disowns Its Barbaric Murewa Thugs

By-The ruling PF party has embarrassing disowned its thugs who were filmed assaulting some senior citizens for supporting the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) in Murewa.

The filmed brutal attacks attracted public outroar prompting the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to issue a statement saying they had launched an investigation.

In an embarrassing propaganda statement Sunday, Zanu PF Director for Information, Tafadzwa Mugwadi said there was no evidence to suggest that the assailants were his party members. ZBC News quotes him as saying:

I condemn this conduct unreservedly. The culprits should be brought to justice. What I however find irresponsible is when desperate clueless political upstarts start to drive and wage misleading narratives that the perpetrators should be referred to as ZANU PF supporters.

This is needless and regrettable spin. Clearly, there is nothing in statements uttered or visuals shown which identifies the culprits as ZANU PF supporters. Remember CCC-MDC-T/ A Harvest House battles which were similarly blamed on ZANU PF yet it was their succession wars. To this day, they still have not taken responsibility over attempts to burn Dr Thokozane Khupe, Elias Mudzuri and Douglass Mwonzora at Tsvangirai’s funeral.

He called upon fellow members of the ruling party to pay heed to calls made by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on peaceful and violence-free elections. He added:

I advise my fellow politicians to desist from fronting politics at a crime scene no matter the temptation to grab headlines and attention. Let the perpetrators be treated as barbaric criminals who should be identified, arrested and rot in jail. On its part, ZANU PF does not tolerate any barbaric criminal conduct. Our philosophy of mobilisation is simple but powerful – ‘Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo’, which has become a national chorus.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has clearly and unequivocally set the record clear on peaceful and violence-free elections. Whoever commit acts of violence in name of the party shall carry his or her cross and account. Let the Zimbabwe Republic Police do what they know best – investigations.

CCC says the assailants are members of the ruling ZANU PF.

Zimbabwe is heading for general elections this year and observers say all political parties must come out clearly condemning all forms of violence.

Violence has been on the rise since late 2021 raising fears that this year’s elections might be bloody as the case was in 2008.

Harare Businessman Questions State Prosecutor Michael Reza’s Interest In Sharpe, Pokugara Court Cases

Harare lawyer, Advocate Tinomudaishe Chinyoka who representing property developer Georgios Katsimberis in his legal battle against controversial businessmen Ken Sharpe has queried why Acting Deputy Prosecutor General Michael Reza is always the prosecutor in all cases Sharpe, his companies and associates are complainants.

Chinyoka made the observation on Friday when he filed an application compelling Reza to recuse himself in the case where Katsimberis is facing fraud charges.

The lawyer said Reza engineered the arrest of Roy Nyabvure, a star witness in a case in which Sharpe is accused of perjury and therefore was a conflicted person in all cases involving Sharpe.

Chinyoka said Reza intentionally misled the police to arrest Nyabvure, who is still testifying in court against Sharpe and thus has vested interests. He queried why Reza is always the prosecutor in all cases Sharpe, his companies, as well as associates such as Tatiana Aleshina, are complainants.

“So when I was looking at this, there seems to be a pattern in the NPA whereby if the complainant is someone called Tatiana Aleshina or Pokugara Properties the prosecutor is always Reza and in one of the cases in which they were the accused persons, Reza took over from another prosecutor for the purpose of withdrawing charges against this person,” said Chinyoka.

He said it would be impossible for Reza to be professional and objective in his “handling of this case, as his personal interests and those of the accused person are now directly engaged against each other.”

Nyabvure was arrested at the Harare Magistrate Court in October last year soon after testifying in a case against Sharpe prosecuted by the Special-Anti Corruption Unit (SACU). The former chief housing officer was denied bail by Harare Magistrates Taurai Manuwere on 17 November last.

Manuwere abandoned bail ruling midway for Nyabvure for 30 minutes after a court official whispered something to him, only to come back and proceed to read his ruling, but now from different papers.

Initially, the submissions that Manuwere was reading were written but had a printed judgment after the 30 minutes break. During the adjournment, Reza entered the court and fished out fellow prosecutor, Lancelot Mutsokoti from court and went out for about seven minutes.

Nyabvure only managed to secure bail on 23 December, more than a month after he was denied bail because the magistrate court was withholding a transcript of its ruling for him to be able to appeal against it.

High Court Judge Justice Pisirayi Kwenda raised a red flag over police involvement in Nyabvure’s arrest.

While granting Nyabvure ZW$100 000 bail,  Justice Kwenda attacked the police for its improvement in the arrest of Nyabvure, Reza for lying that the former chief housing officer was no longer testifying in court. The judge also laid into Harare Magistrate, Taurai Manuwere, for denying Nyabure bail.

Justice Kwenda accused Reza and Manuwere of acting in an unprofessional manner and prejudicial to the country’s justice system.

The judge added that it was unusual for police to intervene with a witness they knew was testifying in cases that were already before the courts.

“Why would the witness be arrested in connection with the cases he is testifying,” queried Justice Kwenda.

“There are proceedings happening before the court and the police are descending into the arena with almighty. There is something there,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nyabvure has approached the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, accusing Reza of obstructing the course of justice by intentionally misrepresenting facts to the police prompting his arrest.

He has also pressed charges against Evans Bota, the police officer who executed his arrest on charges of criminal abuse of office during his tenure at the Harare City Council after he was reported to the police by Sharpe’s Pokugara Properties.

The former chief building inspector was arrested after Reza wrote a letter to the police informing them that Nyabvure had finished testifying whereas facts on the ground show that the prosecutor knew the complainant was testifying against his clients.

In a letter written to ZACC, Nyabvure said Reza’s actions were deliberately misleading and were materially and perjuriously false.

“On or about the 14th of October 2022 and in a letter to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, during the course of or for the purpose of judicial proceedings the accused person, knowing that the Zimbabwe Republic Police were investigating a possible offence, through a statement made otherwise than upon oath made a false declaration and stated the following,” read Nyabvure’s letter.

In response to the letter the police wrote to NPA inquiring if Nyabvure was still a witness, Reza said: “I refer to a letter dated10 October 2022 by Mutumbwa Mugabe and Partners in which they say that Mr Roy Nyabvure is still testifying as a witness. Please be advised that Mr Nyabvure was a State witness in the perjury trial against Michael van Blerk and Pokugara Properties (Pvt) Ltd.

“He has since led his evidence in Chief, was cross-examined and re-examined. He was thereafter excused by the court as his witness duties were completed. If he is a witness in any other case and if I may be favoured with the CRB, I will be able to check and verify for you,” read Reza’s response to the police.

But Nyabvure said Reza had no lawful right to act in the manner that he did and evidence can be led from witnesses of the prosecution.

“The accused made this statement well knowing that, and intending that the Zimbabwe Republic Police be misled into believing that the said Roy Nyabvure was no longer a witness in any proceedings, despite the fact that the accused person knew that Mr Roy Nyabvure was a witness in one of four different cases,” read Nyabvure’s submissions to ZACC.

Nyabvure is a witness in a matter property developer and businessman George Katsimberis is accused of fraudulently doctoring building plans.

Zanu PF Targets Madzibaba Veshanduko

By-Popular Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activist, Godfrey Karembera, popularly known as Madzibaba Veshanduko, is facing eviction from his Guruve rural home by a local chief.

the party said.

In a Twitter post, CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mhere stated that the party is yet to establish the reason behind the intended eviction. She said:

We have received a report that Madzibaba Veshanduko is facing eviction from his homestead. He’s been summoned to the chief’s court this morning in the court of Chief Chiporiro. We are yet to be briefed on the full facts of the matter. Once we have the full brief, we will respond appropriately.

Zanu PF uses traditional leaders to rural cow communities.

Madzibaba Veshanduko is famous for being one of CCC’s top activists who never miss the party’s rallies.

On 17 March 2022, he was arrested and charged with disordely conduct and undermining the authority of the police by insulting them.

While the State alleged that he insulted the police by calling them dogs, his lawyers said he was arrested in Harare CBD and was tortured for wearing yellow.

Narrating his ordeal, he said the police officers “were just beating me. They never told me what the matter was.”

He said they were assaulting him with batons.

He was hospitalised following the ordeal and doctors told him that his kidneys might have been damaged during the assault.

The State also alleged that he wanted to uproot the infamous Mbuya Nehanda statue in Harare CBD.

He was eventually granted $10 000 bail by a Harare magistrate.

His prosecution is pending before the courts.

Mai Titi Warns CCC Members, “You’ll Die For Nothing”

By A Correspondent | ZimEye | As if the blood of Zimbabweans being tortured and killed since 1983-2022, is worthless, UK based ZANU PF influencer, Mai Titi says her vote is for the ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Tsikamutandas Hit Mnangagwa’s Home Village

Dear Editor

Hundreds of villagers have lost cattle to tsikamutandas who claim to have been government sent and approved by his Excellency the President to come and cleanse the district. Currently, based in Murowa ward under the newly installed Chief Mazvihwa in Zvishavane district, these six young men move from village to village forcing people to attend their cleansing rituals.

They instill fear unto the poor villagers by claiming their operation was government approved and they are tsikamutandas for E.D. Anyone who dares to challenge them is deemed a witch and a member of the opposition who is against the government. Should one seek further clarification on their operation they fall into trance and claim to be speaking with the presidency and getting instructions from same. Thereafter, the inquirer is told the soldiers will come to deal with him/her and the whole family. These young men have mastered and perfected the art of instilling fear among the villagers.

As they move from homestead to homestead they point out witches and those who have acquired goblins. Using their “supernatural” powers they remove goblins, spooks, pythons, hyenas, coffins and other blood stained and scary objects. Their minimum charge is a cow and in some cases the number goes up to 6. While their charges have left a lot of villagers poorer their operations have sowed deep rooted enemity among the families and villagers. Cleaver ones are now using these tsikamutandas to settle personal vendettas.

Many villagers are wondering as to why the government approved such a bizarre operation when Zimbabwe is a Christian country. These young men are conmen magicians and tricksters who must be apprehended and charged for conning people. The use of the presidency in their operations calls for the president’s office to act accordingly. We can’t tolerate a situation whereby magicians abuse the presidency and conning poor villagers.

School Fees Shoot Up

State Media – In a last minute rush to buy stationery and other school supplies in Harare yesterday ahead of the opening of schools today, with some parents worried about exorbitant fees in private schools and new levies in public schools. Some private schools have hiked their fees to almost US$600 exclusive of uniforms, while some have gone above US$1 000 including uniforms, with some parents noting that the fees were rising faster than their incomes. While fees and levies can be set in US dollars, parents retain the option of paying in local currency at the interbank exchange rate on the date of payment.

The fees in Government and other public schools are set by the Government and are lower than private schools. Levies in public schools, and fees in non-Government schools, are set by the schools although these require agreement from a majority of the parents at a meeting called for that purpose, and then approval by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education once the budget and the minutes and attendance register of that meeting are submitted. Boarding fees at Government and non-Government schools are almost automatically approved so long as rises are in line with inflation since these fees cover the food of the pupils. A major cause of concern to the authorities over the years has been the complaints from parents who do not exercise their right to attend the fee meetings. The schools can pass the new fees so long as a quorum of 20 percent is at the meeting, and a majority vote in favour. Most parents skip the meetings where their concerns could be addressed.

Many schools, both Government and private, require parents to buy the stationery their children use, the laboratory coats for practicals, and, for boarders, bedding and even mattresses. Most schools open today countrywide with some seeing delays in the wake of flood alerts in Manicaland and Masvingo provinces. Government last week issued a precautionary measure restricting travel for pupils destined to some areas affected by floods. In Harare yesterday, the city centre, especially the downtown shops which stay open on Sundays, saw parents busy buying stationery, while pupils travelling to boarding schools were waiting for buses at the designated pick up points. Parents and guardians were bidding farewell to the children at pick-up points which include Harare Exhibition Park and Civic Centre Car Park off Gamal Abdel Nasser Road. Schools like Nyadire High hiked fees to US$430 while Junction Adventist High School in Mhondoro now demands US$360 with Form Ones paying US$570 excluding uniforms. Nhowe High school in Macheke is charging US$438 and St Oswald in Mamina US$300, Heartley Number 1 Primary wants US$420 while Nyamuzuwe High demands US$564 for uniforms and $500 for fees. Some pupils were seen producing proof of fees payment before boarding buses to their schools.

Parents and guardians help learners board a St Oswald’s High School bus in Harare yesterday. — Pictures: Innocent Makawa Ms Mercy Marovera, whose child attends Nyamuzuwe, said while preparations were challenging, children needed to return to school at all costs. “Apart from the fees, we will also have to buy stationery, groceries and other necessities which are also very expensive, meaning one needs over US$500 for the coming term. “Things were not stable for us because we are struggling to raise school fees, but we are thankful that we finally managed to pay and the children have gone back to school.” Another parent, Mrs Tamari Muchena, said while some schools accepted payment plans, the situation was dire. “We are relieved that children are going back to school and we are expecting that they will attend classes without hindrances. “We cannot afford to make a once-off payment, but for the beginners, it’s a different story. Full payments are a pre-requisite and parents are paying full amounts of both fees and uniforms at our school ranging between US$1 200 to US$1 500,” said Mrs Muchena.

Another parent who preferred anonymity said the major concern was that while school fees had been increased, salaries remained stagnant. “I am happy that schools are reopening but I am concerned about the school fees hike. School fees are unaffordable and some of us are civil servants so it is difficult to pay the fees considering that we have not received a pay rise,” said the parent. A parent with a child going to Form One said boarding schools nowadays require a sacrifice because you’re left without food on the table. “Paying fees and uniforms at the same time is very expensive. Sometimes they require the entire amount of money at the same time. This is impossible for most parents. This is a sacrifice.” Zimbabwe Teachers Association chief executive officer Dr Sifiso Ndlovu said they were still negotiating with the Government on working conditions for teachers. “As schools open we expect to continue negotiations on salaries with our employer to review our salaries and packages. Issues of exchange rate fluctuations should be taken into account so that there is a correlation in the increase of the US dollar component.

“We want our members to continue trusting the organisation,” said Dr Ndlovu. Some learners who spoke to The Herald said they were happy to return to school and hoped that they would be no disruptions of lessons as a result of floods. Sheilla Mudimu, an Upper Six pupil at Nhowe High said they were ready to start the new term. “We are more than ready for the new term, we are very excited that our parents managed to put everything in place for us to return to school and we promise to work hard despite that some areas were devastated by storms,” said Sheilla.

ZANU PF Says ZANU PF Youths Assaulting Murehwa Elderly Are Not ZANU PF

State Media – Zanu PF chairperson for Mashonaland East, Daniel Garwe, has said they had note with great concern a video circulating on social media purportedly showing a group of individuals physically abusing elderly people in Murehwa.

Daniel Garwe

ZANU PF Mashonaland East Province has distanced itself from individuals in the alleged political violence video that has gone viral on social media saying that the people appearing in the video are neither members of the party nor any known affiliate. In a statement, Zanu PF chairperson for Mashonaland East, Daniel Garwe, said they had noted with great concern a video circulating on social media purportedly showing a group of individuals physically abusing elderly people in Murehwa. “Apart from the disgusting physical abuse captured in the video, the province is disturbed by allegations that the perpetrators are ZANU PF members acting on behalf of unidentified bosses.

“The province hereby distances itself from the individuals in the viral video. They are neither members of ZANU PF Mashonaland East Province nor any known affiliate and were clearly hired to further nefarious agendas including soiling the image of His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the Second Republic,” saidGarwe. He said the individuals are not identified anywhere in the video by word or clothing as members of Zanu-PF. “It is therefore presumptuous, hasty and even sinister to rush to brand them as ZANU PF members given that we are in an election season often fraught with all sorts of chicanery. “The opposition Citizen Coalition for Change’s propensity to stage-manage ‘political violence’ incidents ahead of elections is well documented and some of their senior officials are currently before the courts for such lies. The possibility that the Murehwa incident was also stage-managed to draw negative international attention should not be discounted at this point,” Garwe said.

“As a province, we urge all citizens to wait for accurate pronunciations from the Zimbabwe Republic Police which is currently conducting investigations.”Garwe said the province remain guided by the consistent call for peace and tolerance by President Mnangagwa. “The President is on record stating that all Zimbabweans should be vigilant and maintain the stable and peaceful environment that is being fostered under the Second Republic. “We say no to violence, disunity and unrest and call on the police to speedily bring the perpetrators captured in the video to face the full wrath of the law,” he said.-state media

Tsikamutandas For ED On Rampage In Mnangagwa’s Homestead Stealing Cattle

Musengezi Intensifies Bid To Remove Mnangagwa

ZANU PF youth member Sybeth Musengezi, who is challenging President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ascendency to power at the courts, last week said he was still pursuing his goal to stop President Emmerson Mnangagwa from contesting the upcoming elections.

Musengezi claims he is still a Zanu PF youth and is working with other party members to stop Mnangagwa’s second bid for office accusing him of being corrupt.

Zanu PF unanimously endorsed Mnangagwa as its presidential candidate for the upcoming election during the party’s elective congress held last year.

In a series of tweets last week, Musengezi claimed to have ‘consulted our grassroots (and) decided to take the bull (ED) by its horns’.

In an interview with The Standard, Musengezi said he would give Mnangagwa headaches to stop him from contesting the elections but did not disclose his next course of action.

“Just watch the space, but it is just a few days before we unveil our plan,” Musengezi said.

“We are putting everything in place. We can’t pre-empty it now as we could jeopardise our plan.

“We want to stop him from contesting in 2023. We want capable leadership. It doesn’t matter from which party. We’re putting Zimbabwe first before political affiliation.

“Those disowning me are part of a de facto leadership whose mandate is being questioned at the courts through my legitimacy court application.

“The issue of my membership is also before the courts so until the courts have decided, then I can comment fully on that.”

Repeated efforts to get a comment from Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa were in vain as he was not answering calls.

Party political commissar Mike Bimha was also not reachable for comment.

In his High Court application filed in 2021 and which is still pending, Musengezi is seeking the nullification of the November 19, 2017 special session of the Zanu PF central committee meeting which elected Mnangagwa to replace the late former President Robert Mugabe.

Zanu PF have, however, disowned Musengezi as a party member.

In his court application, Musengezi said he has been a member of the ruling party for over 20 years, adding that he was a youth league member under Mugabe’s leadership in Harare province, and held party card number 1515786.

He said he renewed his Zanu PF party membership following the 2017 power transition at Mai Chitepo branch in Muzinda 1 party district in Harare province under card number 0131988.

Musengezi also participated in the Zanu PF primary elections for Harare North constituency ahead of the 2018 elections where he eventually lost to the MDC Alliance’s Allan Markham in the harmonised elections.

Furore Over Civil Servants Salaries

CIVIL servants will be paid according to their academic qualifications, experience and seniority starting this month, as Government has reactivated a policy that promotes advancement of public workers.

The abandonment of advancement procedures for civil servants in 2012 resulted in the “bunching” of salaries of the employees across all grades.

This development irked most civil servants’ unions, mainly in the education sector. They argued that the salary difference between grades was insignificant and resulted in many members being reluctant to upgrade their education.

In a statement on Friday, Public Service Commission (PSC) Secretary Dr Tsitsi Choruma said the advancement policy will start to be operational this month.

“Following engagements in the context of the National Joint Negotiating Council, Government resolved to reactivate the advancement of all civil servants in terms of the applicable advancement procedures.

Accordingly, the Public Service Commission embarked on and finalised the placement of all civil servants in their respective grades by the end of December 2022. All civil servants will, therefore, be paid the salaries that reflect their advancement and placement within their grades with effect from January 2023.”
