What Is Self Harm ?

Key facts

Over 1.5 million adolescents and young adults aged 10–24 years died in 2020, nearly 5000 every day.
Young adolescents aged 10–14 years have the lowest risk of death of all age groups.
Injuries (including road traffic injuries and drowning), violence, self-harm and maternal conditions are the leading causes of death among adolescents and young adults
Half of all mental health disorders in adulthood start by age 14, but most cases are undetected and untreated.
Early onset of substance use is associated with higher risks of developing dependence and other problems during adult life, and people of younger ages are disproportionately affected by substance use compared with people of older ages.
Globally, there were 41 births per 1000 to girls aged 15–19 years in 2020.

Overview
Survival chances for adolescents and young adults vary greatly across the world. In 2020, the probability of dying among those aged 10–24 years was highest in sub-Saharan Africa, Oceania (excluding Australia and New Zealand), northern Africa and southern Asia (1). The average global probability of a 10-year-old dying before age 24 was 6 times higher in sub-Saharan Africa than in North America and Europe.

Main health issues
Injuries
Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death and disability among adolescents. In 2019, nearly 100 000 adolescents (10–19 years) died as a result of road traffic accidents (2). Many of those who died were vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists or users of motorized two-wheelers. In many countries, road safety laws need to be made more comprehensive, and enforcement of such laws needs to be strengthened. Furthermore, young drivers need advice on driving safely, while laws that prohibit driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs need to be strictly enforced among all age groups. Blood alcohol levels should be set lower for young drivers than for adults. Graduated licences for novice drivers with zero-tolerance for drink-driving are recommended.

Drowning is also among the top causes of death among adolescents; more than 40 000 adolescents, over three quarters of them boys, are estimated to have drowned in 2019. Teaching children and adolescents to swim is an essential intervention to prevent these deaths.

Violence
Interpersonal violence is among the leading causes of death in adolescents and young people globally. Its prominence varies substantially by world region. It causes nearly a third of all adolescent male deaths in low- and middle-income countries in the WHO Region of the Americas. According to the global school-based student health survey 42% of adolescent boys and 37% of adolescent girls were exposed to bullying. Sexual violence also affects a significant proportion of youth: 1 in 8 young people report sexual abuse.

Violence during adolescence also increases the risks of injury, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, mental health problems, poor school performance and dropout, early pregnancy, reproductive health problems, and communicable and noncommunicable diseases.

Effective prevention and response strategies include promoting parenting and early childhood development; addressing school-based bullying prevention, programmes that develop life and social skills, and community approaches to reduce access to alcohol and firearms. Effective and empathetic care for adolescent survivors of violence, including ongoing support, can help with the physical and psychological consequences.

Mental health
Depression is one of the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents, and suicide is the second leading cause of death in people aged 15–19 years (2). Mental health conditions account for 16% of the global burden of disease and injury in people aged 10–19 years. Half of all mental health disorders in adulthood start by age 14, but most cases are undetected and untreated.

Many factors have an impact on the well-being and mental health of adolescents. Violence, poverty, stigma, exclusion, and living in humanitarian and fragile settings can increase the risk of developing mental health problems. The consequences of not addressing adolescent mental health conditions extend to adulthood, impairing both physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as adults.

Building socioemotional skills in children and adolescents and providing them with psychosocial support in schools and other community settings can help promote good mental health. Programmes to help strengthen the ties between adolescents and their families and improve quality of home environments are also important. If problems arise, they should be detected and timely managed by competent and caring health workers.

Adolescent mental health fact sheet

Alcohol and drug use
Drinking alcohol among adolescents is a major concern in many countries. It can reduce self-control and increase risky behaviours, such as unsafe sex or dangerous driving. It is an underlying cause of injuries (including those due to road traffic accidents), violence and premature deaths. It can also lead to health problems in later life and affects life expectancy. Worldwide, more than a quarter of all people aged 15–19 years are current drinkers, amounting to 155 million adolescents. Prevalence of heavy episodic drinking among adolescents aged 15–19 years was 13.6% in 2016, with males most at risk.

Cannabis is the most widely used psychoactive drug among young people with about 4.7% of people aged 15–16 years using it at least once in 2018. Alcohol and drug use in children and adolescents is associated with neurocognitive alterations which can lead to behavioural, emotional, social and academic problems in later life.

Prevention of alcohol and drug use are important areas of public health actions and may include population-based strategies and interventions, activities in school, community, family and on the individual level. Setting a minimum age for buying and consuming alcohol and eliminate marketing and advertising to minors are among the key strategies for reducing drinking among adolescents.

Tobacco use
The vast majority of people using tobacco today began doing so when they were adolescents. Prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to minors (under 18 years) and increasing the price of tobacco products through higher taxes, banning tobacco advertising and ensuring smoke-free environments are crucial. Globally, at least 1 in 10 adolescents aged 13–15 years uses tobacco, although there are areas where this figure is much higher.

HIV/AIDS
An estimated 1.7 million adolescents (age 10–19 years) were living with HIV in 2019 with around 90% in the WHO African Region (3). While there have been substantial declines in new infections amongst adolescents from a peak in 1994, adolescents still account for about 10% of new adult HIV infections, with three-quarters amongst adolescent girls (4). Additionally, while new infections may have fallen in many of the most severely affected countries, recent testing coverage remains low suggesting that many adolescents and young people living with HIV may not know their status (5).

Adolescents living with HIV have worse access to antiretroviral treatment, adherence to treatment, retention in care and viral suppression. A key factor contributing to these is limited provision of adolescent-friendly services including psychosocial interventions and support.

Adolescents and young people need to know how to protect themselves from HIV infection and must also have the means to do so. This includes being able to obtain access HIV prevention interventions including voluntary medical male circumcision, condoms and pre-exposure prophylaxis, better access to HIV testing and counselling, and stronger links to HIV treatment services for those who test HIV positive.

Other infectious diseases
Thanks to improved childhood vaccination, adolescent deaths and disability from measles have fallen markedly. For example, adolescent mortality from measles fell by 90% in the African Region between 2000 and 2012.

Diarrhoea and lower respiratory tract infections (pneumonia) are estimated to be among the top 10 causes of death for adolescents 10–14 years. These two diseases, along with meningitis, are all among the top 5 causes of adolescent death in African low- and middle-income countries.

Infectious diseases like with human papilloma virus that normally occurs after onset of sexual activity can lead to both short-term disease (genital warts) during adolescence but more importantly also leads to cervical and other cancers several decades later. Early adolescence (9–14 years) is the optimal time for vaccination against HPV infection and it is estimated that if 90% of girls globally get the HPV vaccine more than 40 million lives could be saved over the next century. However, it is estimated that in 2019 only 15% of girls globally received the vaccine.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer fact sheet

Early pregnancy and childbirth
Approximately 12 million girls aged 15–19 years and at least 777 000 girls under 15 years give birth each year in developing regions. Complications from pregnancy and childbirth are among the leading causes of death for girls aged 15–19 years globally.

The UN Population Division puts the global adolescent birth rate in 2020 at 41 births per 1000 girls this age, and country rates range from 1 to over 200 births per 1000 girls (6). This indicates a marked decrease since 1990. This decrease is reflected in a similar decline in maternal mortality rates among girls aged 15–19 years.

One of the specific targets of the health Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 3) is that by 2030, the world should ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services, including for family planning, information and education, and the integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programmes.

Adolescents need and have a right to comprehensive sexuality education, a curriculum-based process of teaching and learning about the cognitive, emotional, physical and social aspects of sexuality. Better access to contraceptive information and services can reduce the number of girls becoming pregnant and giving birth at too young an age. Laws that are enforced that specify a minimum age of marriage at 18 can help.

Girls who do become pregnant need access to quality antenatal care. Where permitted by law, adolescents who opt to terminate their pregnancies should have access to safe abortion.

Mavaza Says: Geogenix Pomona Gives Hope To Dumpsite Families

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | OPINION | By sheer dint of necessity, the urban poor in Zimbabwe had invented an endless series of survival strategies to endure the high rate of unemployment and widespread poverty by engaging in occupations such as waste scavenging. Families have been sustained by rubbish slates generations have not seen their lives beyond the smelly heap of Pomona dumpsite, in that smelly confusion and settlement on squatter camps an unbelievable breath of fresh air swept across from the Geo Pomona Waste.

An opportunity of identifying a recycling skills from the scavenging people and a great creation of formal employment and providing Morden decent accommodation is a dimension Geo Pomona is bringing to the residents. Whilst the air is replete with evidence of the economic significance of this livelihood activity, there has been fierce criticism and demonising of this project by the opposition and independent councillors. Despite the fact that there has been scanty empirical work on its health implications the opposition against the cleaning of dumpsites is alarming and disturbing. Geo Pomona in its wisdom through the executive skills of Mr Delish Nguwaya the CEO and Executive Chairman has examined the health implications associated with the dumpsites and how to come out of rubbish without rubbish. Despite all the Rubbish being said about the rubbish Pomona is being transformed into a world class project generating energy from nothing.
The multi million investment deal to convert garbage at Harare’s main dumpsite at Pomona into a safe and inert form came to life and has been made a national project. The City of Harare officially handed over of the rubbish dump to Geo Pomona Waste Management Private Limited.
The deal involves the setting up of a modern rubbish processing plant that will generate a modest 22MW of electricity.
The project is projected to generate over 300 jobs while the structures are being built and boost economic growth.
Thousands more employment opportunities will be created after the structures are set.
The Pomona issue has been misrepresented for the benefit of those who suffer from a condition called antidisestablishmentarianism.
Despite being tormented by the press demonised and rubbished the Geo Pomona Waste Management Private Limited’s CEO Mr D Nguwaya under Geogenix BV, an international firm involved in dealing with garbage has literally created power from nothing light from darkness. While the power generation station at Pomona will be modest, the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority already has other small and medium private stations now ready to feed the grid.
In a joint statement signed by acting Harare town clerk Engineer Mabhena Moyo and Geo Pomona Waste Management Private Limited country representative Mr Dilesh Nguwaya and read during the site handover, both parties promised to work harmoniously. However the city fathers who are largely from the opposition CCC have fought viciously against the project without giving regards to the beneficiaries who are the city residents. Instead of thanking the Government for creating a conducive environment for attracting international investors into the energy sector, especially at a time power shortages were a daily challenge some people have created lies which are meant to rubbish the good project.
Pomona project is leaving no one behind and has set its eyes on vision 2030.

The Pomona project reveals how scavengers were exposed daily to a myriad life threatening health problems as they sift for recyclable products. Nguwaya accepted that given the economic implication of the enterprise, it is important that the residents benefit from intervention programs that can reduce the adverse health outcomes associated with their job and offer them job opportunities.

In the past few decades, the process of urbanization has accelerated mainly in cities coping with informal hyper growth. These cities are characterized by an economy heavily dependent on the informal sector and very extensive poverty but Zimbabwe government has supported and made a turning point in the predicament by nationalising the project for the best interest of its citizens.
The high concentration of people in the emerging urban centres in the developing world has two implications: it leads to increases in waste generation and also creates a large pool of unemployed and underemployed residents with few alternative means of earning a living.

World over, economic downturn led to the development and growth of the informal sector in response to the unemployment growth. Among the informal activities that have grown in significance in response to the massive urban unemployment is waste scavenging.

A waste scavenger is a person who salvages reusable or recyclable materials to sell or for personal consumption. Geo Pomona has taken this into account and is creating experts out of the usually downtrodden residents. Scavenging from the waste stream is an important economic activity that provides income for over 15 million people worldwide, most of whom are in cities in developing countries, and it has a financial impact of several billions of US- dollars every year. Geo Pomona is channelling all this into the mainstream economy.

The project benefits both the people and the investors. Waste scavenging is a popular informal activity which depends on the quantity and quality of waste generated by the population. The proliferation of waste scavengers on the streets and waste dumpsites in Zimbabwe since the early colonial time represents one of the most visible consequences of the deep economic crisis which Pomona is turning into a blessing.

The ECO Mr D Nguwaya and his team have examined the economic significance as an efficient livelihood strategy, and the participation of scavengers in recycling policies. Despite the burgeoning literature on this enterprise, scant attention has been paid to the health risks associated with it.

Meanwhile, these scavengers live and work in unhygienic conditions and the nature of their occupation exposes them to potentially pathogenic bio-aerosols that may lead to the spread of various diseases. No one stood up for these people the moment D Nguwaya and Pomona lift a hand the noise is killing. The abundance of fleas and offensive odours in waste disposal sites, along with the lack of proper protective devices, make the working conditions even more precarious.

Scavengers collect plastics, paper, glass bottles, rubber materials, and ferrous and non-ferrous metals from dump sites, which can be risky as they are exposed to various infectious agents and toxic substances that may cause illness. In addition, they face social abuse from certain elements of society, which may lead to social problems. Yet nobody saw it only to make noise when development is introduced. If Pomona Project is not allowed to move on to overcome the hazards of the job, a greater majority will take to substance abuse such as smoking and alcoholism.

As a nation we must unite with Pomona and enjoy the development.

“ED Gvt Worse Than Rhodesia”: Mliswa

By A Correspondent- Outspoken Norton legislator Temba Mliswa (Independent) has said the Zimbabwean government is behaving worse than the Rhodesian regime which allowed relatives and colleagues of political prisoners to visit them in jail.

Mliswa made the remarks after CCC leader Nelson Chamisa was on Thursday barred from seeing jailed Zengesa West MP Job Sikhala and his Chitungwiza North counterpart Godfrey Sithole as well as 14 other CCC activists who are in pre-trial detention at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison. Said Mliswa:

The blocking of Nelson Chamisa from meeting with Sikhala and others is most unfortunate. We don’t expect such in a liberated country.

Our own liberation fighters when imprisoned by the Rhodesians were allowed visitor.

Why do we have to go so low? We can’t be worse than Rhodesia.

Chamisa told reporters on Thursday that he was made to wait at the jail for more than two hours before the officer in charge, one Hukurume, informed him that he had been instructed by Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi that he (Chamisa) will not be allowed to see Sikhala and the other CCC activists.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet (Presidential Communications), George Charamba, said Chamisa should visit his colleagues at their next court appearance.

Without wasting time, Ndlovu reportedly took the girl to a nearby bush and they had sex.

While in the act, Ndlovu was spotted by a passerby who then raised the alarm.

Seeing that they had been seen the two lovers fled from the scene but the passerby who had positively identified the girl went and notified her parents.

When she was confronted by her parents, the girl confessed that she was in love with Ndlovu and that they were caught having sex in the bush.

Byo Woman Jailed For Murder

By A Correspondent- A Bulawayo woman has been sentenced to serve a 25-year jail term at Chikurubi Female Prison in Harare after being convicted of murdering her husband on March 2, 2018.

Nomzamo Luhle Dube (34) of Pumula South in Bulawayo claimed that she stabbed her husband, Martin Luther Jabulani Ncube, with a kitchen knife after he arrived home late after a beer drink.

Speaking during an interview at Chikurubi Female Prison, Dube said her late husband reportedly arrived home at around 1 am and knocked on their door.

She claimed that when she woke up and opened the door, her late husband started assaulting her accusing her of delaying opening the door. Dube added:

He kicked me all over the body during which he tripped and fell and at that point he picked a knife which was on the floor and tried to stab me.

Dube said she managed to take the knife from her husband and accidentally stabbed him in the chest.

This was contrary to what her daughter had told the court, resulting in her conviction of murder.

Her minor

minor daughter gave the court a detailed testimony of how her mother incessantly attacked her stepfather, the now-deceased Martin, before she stabbed him as he pleaded for mercy.

She told the court that her mother later instructed her to open the door and when the deceased walked in, an altercation ensued between the two. The daughter told the court during trial:

My mother refused to open the door and he persistently pleaded with her to open, but she remained adamant.

When dad walked in, my mother immediately shouted at him before they went to the bedroom. I followed them and witnessed my mother indiscriminately punching dad on the face as he continuously pleaded with her to stop.

Throughout the scuffle, my dad never retaliated, but only pushed my mother resulting in her hitting against a wardrobe.

Dube was convicted of murder with actual intent by Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Maxwell Takuva and sentenced to 25 years in jail.

Death sentence:

The Constitution says those convicted of murder can be given a death sentence but women are protected from the sentence.

Explaining this situation, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi saidduring public consultations and a referendum, an overwhelming majority of people voted for retaining the death penalty. He added:

Resultantly, section 48 (2) of the Constitution permits the sentencing of men between the ages of 21 and 70 years if they are convicted of murder committed in aggravating circumstances.

Twitter Executives Shown The Door

By A Correspondent- Elon Musk fired Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal along with three other top executives including legal executive Vijaya Gadde as soon as he acquired the microblogging site.

Reports claimed that Musk is apparently running a cleaning drive at Twitter and earlier there were reports which said that Musk may fire up to 75% of Twitter’s staff.

CEO of electric car maker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) and self-described free speech absolutist also fired Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal, according to people familiar with the matter.

He had accused them of misleading him and Twitter investors over the number of fake accounts on the platform.

He said in May he would reverse Twitter’s ban on Donald Trump, whose account was removed after the attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The former U.S. president previously said he won’t return to the platform and has instead launched his own social media app, Truth Social.

Musk tried to calm Twitter employee fears that major layoffs are coming and assured advertisers that his past criticism of Twitter’s content moderation rules would not harm its appeal.

As news of the deal spread, some Twitter users were quick to flag their willingness to walk away.

European regulators also reiterated past warnings that, under Musk’s leadership, Twitter must still abide by the region’s Digital Services Act, which levies hefty fines on companies if they do not control illegal content.

13yr Old Writes Grade 7 Exam On Labor Bed

By A Correspondent- A 13-year-old pupil at Chinotimba Primary School in Victoria Falls had to write part of her ZIMSEC Grade Seven general examinations on a hospital bed soon after giving birth last month.

The learner was heavily pregnant when she sat for her first paper before going into labour that same afternoon.

She wrote four papers at the Victoria Falls Hospital maternity ward ignoring labour pains.

teenage mother met Thumelani Sibanda in January this year, an 18-year-old assistant builder who was working at a house next door and the two started dating.

She only discovered she was pregnant in August when her maternal aunt noticed abnormal changes in her body.

Her mother then informed the school authorities who advised that she could do extra lessons at home and only come to school to write the examinations. Said the teen mother:

I was okay when I went to write my first paper on a Monday but other learners kept looking at me.

I left school going home after the exam and along the way, I started feeling pain.

When I got home I just lay down on the floor as the pain increased.

Augur Investments Sets The Record Straight On False Allegations

By A Correspondent- Augur Investments OU has set the record straight on claims by CCC VP Tendai Biti that the property company was fraudulent and had not complied with the country’ s company registration processes.

In a statement, the company said is important to highlight that the firm had complied with the laws of Zimbabwe and any regulatory processes were duly followed.

Said Augur Investments OU:
“It is important that Mr Biti is put to the strictest of proof to substantiate his baseless utterances.

It is untrue for anyone to allege that Augur Investments OU was not registered or licensed to operate in Zimbabwe. The Minister of Justice approved the registration of Augur Investment as a foreign company to operate in Zimbabwe as per Section 330 of the then Companies Act Chapter 24:14 and a certificate to that effect was issued in 2009 and 2012 respectively. Augur Investments is duly authorised to operate in Zimbabwe as evidenced by a Certificate of Registration as a Foreign Company issued by the Registrar of Companies on the 3rd of May 2010.”

We publish below the full text of the statement:

MATTER OF FACTS

Following the circulation of recent statements by Mr Biti concerning Augur Investments and its operations in Zimbabwe, we wish to set the record straight and correct any such ludicrous claims by Mr Biti.

The relationship between Augur Investments OU and the City of Harare dates back to 2007 with the common and shared vision for the development of the City of Harare and in particular the upgrading of the Joshua Mqabuko NkomoExpressway (Airport Highway Road). The major highlights of the events leading to the projects are shown below:

▪ A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Augur Investments OU and the City of Harare in June 2007 and consequently a Shareholders Agreement was signed between Augur Investments OU and City of Harare in September 2007.

▪ The initial request from the City of Harare was for the construction of the Airport Highway through the Mukuvisi Corridor, from Dieppe Road to Enterprise Road, be part of the Joint Venture project.  However it was established that the ownership of the Highway would then become the property of Sunshine Developments P/L which was not possible as well as the estimated cost being too great for the Joint Venture.

▪ Subsequently in February 2008, in negotiations with the City of Harare, Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Local Government, Augur was invited to finance, design and construct the Airport Highway in its entirety, from the Harare Main Airport to Enterprise Road.  Such special relationship was sanctioned by Council through its Resolution of 29th May 2008 and Council resolved to pay Augur Investments OU through transfer with suitable land for the works done on the Airport Road Highway construction.

▪ Presidential and Cabinet approval was granted and presentations were made in March and April 2008, highlighting Sunshine Developments P/L, Joint Venture projects as well as the Airport Highway Route.

▪ The Airport Highway Memorandum of Understanding and subsequent Memorandum of Agreement were signed in May and June 2008 respectively.

▪ The Zimbabwe Investment Authority (ZIA) on 29 August 2008 had approved the Sunshine Developments Pvt Ltd JV entity between Augur Investments and City of Harare under certificate number 000334.

It is thus untrue for Mr Biti or anyone to assert that the Airport Road Contract was an illegality as the Road project was sanctioned by both City of Harare and the Government of Zimbabwe which on the 5th of May 2009, the Permanent Secretary of Local Government, Rural & Urban Development wrote to advise Augur that Cabinet had granted National Project Status for the Airport Highway Project. Hence the project was endorsed by both Council and the Government in which Mr Biti was serving at that material time as the Minister of Finance. In any particular country, Zimbabwe included there is nothing illegal for City Council and government to collaborate with private business players in the development of the country.

It is important to highlight that in 2009, Augur Investments OU sought the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s authority to acquire 100% shareholding in its Zimbabwean subsidiaries and such authority was granted in 2009 by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. The RBZ wrote to Augur that:

We write to acknowledge receipt of your letter dated 03 September, 2009 and advise that Exchange Control is agreeable to the applicant acquiring 100 percent of west Property Company and 100 percent share of shelf companies”.

It is important to highlight that Augur Investments OU has complied with the laws of Zimbabwe and any regulatory processes have been duly followed and Mr Biti is put to the strictest of proof to substantiate his baseless utterances.

It is untrue for anyone to allege that Augur was not registeredor licensed to operate in Zimbabwe. The Minister of Justice approved the registration of Augur Investment as a foreign company to operate in Zimbabwe as per Section 330 of the then Companies Act Chapter 24:14 and a certificate to that effect was issued in 2009 and 2012 respectively.

Augur Investments is duly authorised to operate in Zimbabwe as evidenced by a Certificate of Registration as a Foreign Company issued by the Registrar of Companies on the 3rd of May 2010.

We refute claims that our payments of land by the City of Harare were fraudulent. Once Augur completed the works on the road, Interim Payment Certificates were duly generated and submitted for assessment through an agreed independent engineering evaluator for assessment. Once such assessments were done, such IPC was then sent to the City of Harare for payment of the prorate portion of the land.  Proof of such interim payment certificates exists both with the Council and with Government departments.

Hence it is malicious and false to allege that we acquired the land illegally. In simple terms, we were paid for the works that we duly completed.

It is within the public realm that Government cancelled the Airport Road Highway contract and we litigated the matter and we managed to amicably resolve the matters through a Deed of Settlement that was subsequently registered into an order of the Supreme Court under SC878/19 and as a High Court Order under HC4528/19. It is normal practice for parties in litigation to settle and such settlements are accepted by the Courts.

Hence there exists no basis for anyone to allege that the settlement was an illegality when such settlement was done with the blessing and full consent of the parties in litigation.

Whilst Mr Biti would want to create sensational stories without basis, we reiterate that our developments are fully compliant with the Environmental and urban Planning Laws. The Environmental Management Agency granted the environmental impact assessment certificate in 2012 for the development of the Borrowdale West Millennium Park to develop shops, housing, medical centre and related infrastructure.

All other developments currently being carried out by the company have EIA certificates and are in compliance with environmental and town planning laws statutes.

While malicious attempts have been made by Mr Biti to divest control of our properties through numerous litigation challenging our title to our Pomona Land, the matter has been litigated to its natural conclusion by the Supreme Court in Allan Markharm v Augur Investments Case Number SC 229/22 wherein Mr Biti’s clients lost the matter and were ordered to pay costs of suit to us. The High Court under HC 425/21 had ruled in our favour as well. Hence there exists no basis for anyone to challenge our title to our Pomona land as it was paid to us for work done on the Airport Highway Project.

We reiterate that the land that we legally acquired is being improved through provision of on and offsite infrastructure such as roads, water, wastewater and storm water drains. The people who have for long not been able to access serviced land are now getting value added land for residential and commercial developments.

In this regard, we are contributing significantly to the infrastructural development of Zimbabwe and the developed land will serve generations to come and ensure that our people enjoying maximum benefits through such infrastructural development.

We remain committed to partnering with both Council, Government and other key private players in developing land for our people and ensuring that we help create sustainable communities where our people can work, live, play and shop.

Zanu Allows Mwonzora To Visit Sikhala, Blocks Chamisa

By-Zanu PF government recently allowed MDC-T President Douglas Mwonzora to visit the detained CCC deputy chairman, Job Sikhala but denied CCC President Nelson Chamisa to do the same.

Chamisa was held Thursday by Chikurubi correctional officers for three hours before they blocked him from seeing Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole.

Sikhala and the other party activists from the Nyatsime area are detained at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison.
The directive to block Chamisa came from Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi.

Speaking to reporters, Chamisa said prison authorities said they had received instructions from Ziyambi to bar him from seeing Sikhala and the other CCC activists. Said Chamisa:
It’s so disheartening to know that just after we had been made to wait for three hours, we were then told that we can now enter to be able to see our colleagues.
We were then invited to the office of the Officer in Charge of prisons Mr. Hukurume. He indicated to us that it is unfortunate that we are not able to see Honourable Job Sikhala and the other Nyatsime colleagues, our citizen heroes because the Minister of Justice has instructed that we can’t see them.
We were surprised because they had made us wait for almost two, three hours. You can bear witness and testimony to that.
But all of a sudden they said they had received an instruction that you cannot see all your colleagues. So we are not able to see them.
It is an embarrassment, it is harassment, and it is unacceptable that we have this kind of abuse of the law.
Last week, the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPSC) said Chamisa was free to visit his colleagues at Chikurubi, and today’s events came as a surprise to the opposition leader.

Chamisa Humiliated

By-Prison officials at Chikurubi prison Thursday held CCC President Nelson Chamisa for three hours before blocking him from seeing MPs Job Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole.

Last week, the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPSC) said Chamisa was free to visit his colleagues at Chikurubi, and today’s events came as a surprise to the opposition leader.
MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora was recently given permission by ZPCS to visit Sikhala and Sithole but the duo allegedly refused to meet him.
Sikhala, Sithole, and the other 14 CCC activists from Nyatsime have been in pre-trial detention since June on charges ranging from inciting violence to public violence.

Nick Mangwana: Nothing Wrong With Civil Servants Wasting Work Time At ZANU PF Congress

…Information perm sec Nick Mangwana said there was nothing wrong with civil servants spending work time at the ruling party congress

Nick Mangwana

The Zanu PF elective congress, which kicked off in Harare on Thursday and ends today, has virtually grounded government business as all Cabinet ministers, secretaries, heads of department and parastatals have been railroaded to the indaba.

Notable faces at the ruling party extravaganza yesterday included Civil Service Commission chairperson Vincent Hungwe, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Misheck Sibanda, directors and parastatal heads, among others.

Information permanent secretary Ndavaningi Mangwana yesterday said there was nothing wrong with civil servants spending work time at the ruling party congress.

“They have been invited to the congress of a political party to help us understand their policy thrusts which we have to implement in government,” Mangwana said.

In his address, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is also the party’s first secretary, said Zanu PF’s campaign machinery was now ready to roll with all mobilisation resources already in place.

“Zanu PF is ready. Our systems are oiled. Election materials and resources are in place to mount a roaring campaign for a thunderous victory of our party. The people’s revolution is ongoing and unstoppable,” Mnangagwa said.

“Collectively as delegates at this congress, we pronounce our party’s readiness to yet again win another mandate to govern our beloved motherland.”

Mnangagwa has been endorsed as Zanu PF’s sole presidential candidate.

He will likely square off with opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa, whom he narrowly beat in the 2018 disputed elections.

A number of other opposition leaders, including those representing fringe political parties, are also eyeing the presidency.

But Mnangagwa vowed that Zanu PF “will continue to rule the land of our forefathers”.

He also told delegates that the party’s constitution would be amended to align it with the new socio-economic and political realities.

“The amendments to the party constitution which will be tabled at this congress are reflective of the new socio-economic and political realities,” Mnangagwa said.

“These must further enhance efficiency and synergies in the implementation of the party mandate, resolutions, policies and programmes, this is in line with the democratic principles, constitutionalism and the rule of law that anchor our party.”

His deputy Constantino Chiwenga rubbished speculative reports that he was angling to challenge Mnangagwa at the congress, saying: “He is the only leader we know. He deserves another opportunity to lead us. He has everything needed to lead us. We wish many more years for our leader and that God grants him more wisdom. His works have surpassed our expectations.”

Mnangagwa’s ascendancy to the Zanu PF leadership in 2017 is, however, being challenged in the High Court by former party youth member Sybeth Musengezi, who claims it was unprocedural.–

What Is Stopping Mnangagwa And Chamisa From The Cyril-Malema’s Lesotho Gesture?

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Commander In Charge, Julius Malema were pictured having a good conversation and laughing together in Lesotho in what many Zimbabweans felt was the missing link in our country politics.

President Chamisa, Mnangagwa Clash In 10 By-elections

By James Gwati- The recent recalls by the MDC-T President Douglas Mwonzora of CCC councillors has created several by-elections.

These by-elections will be held to fill local government vacancies in Binga, Gweru and Victoria Falls.

In a notice, Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) chief elections officer Utoile Silaigwana said the by-elections would be held on 3 December.

He said six wards were vacant in Binga, three in Gweru, and one in Victoria Falls.

 Said Silaigwana:

In relation to the election of the councillors for the said wards, nomination courts shall sit on Thursday, 3 November 2022, commencing from 10 AM to 4 PM at the offices of the chief executive officer for Binga Rural District Council, for the purposes of receiving nominations of candidates for election as councillors for the vacant wards 6, 8, 10, 15, 20 and 23 and the offices of the town clerk for Gweru Municipality, Gweru, for purposes of receiving nominations of candidates for election as councillors for the vacant wards 4, 5 and 18.

The offices of the town clerk for Victoria Falls Municipality, Victoria Falls, for purposes of receiving nominations for candidates for elections as councillor for the vacant ward 8 of Victoria Falls Municipality.

These are likely to be the last by-elections ahead of the 2023 general elections as ZEC recently announced that any vacancy that arises on or after 1 November will not be filled through a by-election.

Mwonzora’s MDC-T has not participated in by-elections since its candidates failed to win a single seat during the 26 March by-elections. | VicFallsLive

The Chevrons beat Pakistan by one run at the Perth Stadium in a Super 12 Group 2 match on Thursday.

President Chamisa has described the Chevrons’ victory as the nation’s pride.

“Congratulations Chevrons @ZimCricketv on the win.

You make us proud. You reminded us how special it is to be Zimbabwean. Thank you for igniting that sparkle. No doubt, we are a great and a formidable sporting nation.

Sport is support. ZIMBABWE will be untouchable in every sport.”

Plan To Replace ED With Chiwenga Flops

The plan to replace Emmerson Mnangagwa with his deputy Comstanibo Chiwenga, has flopped with 7th Zanu-PF National People’s Congress unanimously endorsing Emmerson Mnangagwa as the ruling party’s President and First Secretary as well as sole presidential candidate ahead of next year’s harmonised elections.

The National People’s Congress, the supreme policy-making organ of the party which meets after every five years to elect new leadership, endorsed the President according to Article 5 Section 24 of the party constitution.

Zanu-PF National Chair Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri presided over the meeting during which President Mnangagwa tabled the previous Central Committee report for adoption by members.

Addressing delegates during the meeting, Zanu-PF Vice-President and Second Secretary Cde Constantino Chiwenga said all party organs and affiliates were backing the leadership of Emmerson Mnangagwa.

“While this Congress is supposed to be an elective one, the party membership, through its structures and organs had already clearly and thunderously endorsed Emmerson Mnangagwa as the President and First Secretary and sole presidential candidate of the ruling party Zanu-PF in the 2023 harmonised elections,” he said.

VP Chiwenga said the title “ED” should now mean “Emmerson Delivers” because the President has been delivering on his electoral pledges.

“The illustrious work he has done in the last five years guarantees him a thunderous victory in the 2023 harmonised elections.

“Over a very short space of time he has surpassed our expectations. May he continue to lead and guide us in the next term,” he said.

Zanu-PF Secretary for Administration Dr Obert Mpofu said the Congress was held according to Article 5, Section 23 of the party’s constitution which provides that there shall be a National People’s Congress which shall be the supreme organ of the party.

Party leadership and members were on cloud nine over the endorsement of President Mnangagwa.

Zanu-PF provincial chair for Mashonaland WestMary Mliswa-Chikoka said the endorsement of President Mnangagwa was well-deserved.

“I am so delighted that as Zanu-PF we have endorsed the President as our sole candidate for the presidential elections. Also that we endorsed him as the First Secretary and President of the party Zanu-PF.

“The endorsement is due to his good works that everyone is witnessing. It is only right that we did that, who else was capable except for our father President Mnangagwa,” she said.

Zanu-PF Harare Province Youth League Deputy spokesperson Denzel Romol said the endorsement of Mnabgagwa is the best thing to happen to the party and country at large.

“Surely one good term deserves another. Dr Mnangagwa is a tried and tested leader. Since his assumption of the reins of power, he has proved beyond a shadow of doubt that he walks the talk hence we need him as our captain.

“History will judge us right, so will future generations of the entire African Continent. This endorsement is that which will bring to reality our noble Vision 2030 way sooner than the actual target date,” he said.

A party member from Matabeleland North, Nothando Dube, said the endorsement of President Mnangagwa was a sign of faith.

“It is clear that people are benefiting from the good policies being initiated by Emmerson Mnangagwa which are leaving no one and no place behind.

“It is now left for us members to support him so that we garner enough votes for a resounding victory in the coming elections,” she said.

A party member from Mhondoro Ngezi, Looklife Zvarevashe, said it is the President’s good works that have seen him being retained.-state media

Stop Abusing Children, CCC Tells Mnangagwa

Tinashe Sambiri|Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) has condemned the abuse of children by Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mr Mnangagwa forced children to participate in political activities.

“PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF CHILDREN…

Children have the right to be protected from all kinds of abuse including participating in political activities.

We strongly condemn the abuse of children that we witnessed across the country on Tuesday.

Children were forced to participate in political activities, which is a gross violation of their rights.

STOP CORRUPTION: The biggest cause of Zimbabwe’s economic destruction in Zimbabwe is corruption by Zanu PF elites.

By his own admission, the late President Robert Mugabe revealed that his then government had lost more than USD15 billion through the illegal sell of diamonds.

Woman Bashes Hubby’s Girlfriend At Court

A Mutare woman was yesterday arrested at Mutare Civil Court after slapping her husband’s alleged lover who was applying for a peace order against her.
Sandra Mukasi slapped Tinotenda Kamangira of 3897 Phase 2 Chikanga as they waited outside the court room to appear before Magistrate Perseverance Makala.

Kamangira had approached the court seeking a peace order against Mukasi who was allegedly harassing her after catching her in bed with her husband Nicholas Karonga.

The peace order was granted and later Mukasi was arrested and taken to Mutare Central Police station.

The court heard that Mukasi left Karonga and their children and went to South Africa in search of green pastures.

Karonga who works at Red Cross Society in Sakubva met Kamangira who was doing her nurse aid attachment at the same organisation and the two started dating. Karonga allegedly lied to Kamangira that he was a widower.

Mukasi came back home unannounced and found the two lovebirds cohabiting at her matrimonial home. Mukasi and Kamangira exchanged harsh words and Mukasi allegedly continued harassing her.

Kamangira then sought a peace order against Mukasi and before the matter was heard by Magistrate Makala, Mukasi slapped Kamangira in full view of Police details leading to her arrest.

“It is true that I dated her husband while I was on attachment but I didn’t know that he was married. When I became aware of it, I stepped aside but still after that Mukasi is in the habit of harassing and assaulting me like she has just done, said a sobbing Kamangira.- Masvingo Mirror

Soweto Derby: Will Billiat Rise To The Occasion?

Kaizer Chiefs star Keegan Dolly believes Khama Billiat still has a lot to offer in the Amakhosi shirt despite a slow start to the season.

Billiat is yet to open his scoring account for the Soweto giants this season, a setback which has resulted in renewed criticism for the Mufakose-raised winger.

Dolly though, believes Billiat can still rediscover his form for the Glamour Boys due to the experience the Aces Youth Academy graduate has.

“I think with Khama [Billiat] he’s been long in the game he’s experienced,” Dolly told the media at the Soweto derby presser in Johannesburg.

He has experienced times like this [before] where he was struggling to score goals for the club.

“I think he came out on top all the time, we all know Khama Billiat is a quality player. We all know his strengths. I think it’s just going to take one game and one goal that’s going to change this,” added the Bafana Bafana star.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Robbers Pounce On Church

IN a brazen robbery in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, robbers broke down a door at the residence of a Roman Catholic Church priest before getting away with cash.

The attack took place at the Roman Catholic Church in Emakhandeni suburb.

When B-Metro got to the scene of the robbery on Wednesday morning, plain clothed officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) were conducting investigations.

The house had been declared ‘a crime scene under investigation’ and this publication was asked to leave.

But we observed a broken-down door which appeared to have been chopped down with an axe or a sharp object.

Members of the church, who said they had come to console their priest upon hearing the news, could be seen milling around the church premises.

One of the congregants said the armed men demanded cash and got away with $25 000 from the sale of chickens.

“We run a chicken project here at the church and the only money the robbers could find was the cash from the sale of those chickens. We understand that they (robbers) kept demanding the keys to the safe but the priest doesn’t have one in his house,” said the church member.

More to follow……this is a developing story

ZRP Cop Fondles Minor

A police officer based in Beitbridge has appeared in court facing indecent assault charges after he allegedly f0ndled and ki_ssed a 15-year-old girl.

Steven Chanda from Mzilikazi in Bulawayo appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Busani Sibanda.

He was not asked to plead and was remanded out of custody to 11 November 2022 on $50 000 bail.

Allegations against Chanda are that on 16 October 2022, he went to the juvenile’s home in Mzilikazi suburb where he found her with her younger brother. Chanda then asked the victim’s brother to accompany him to Makokoba suburb.

After 30 minutes, Chanda reportedly returned alone to the juvenile’s home and queried about the whereabouts of her parents.

Realising that the girl was alone, he went on to f0ndle her br_easts. He was then interrupted by someone who was walking outside and he quickly went to check.

When he discovered that the person who was moving outside had gone, he went back into the house and ki_ssed the victim on her neck.

The victim’s brother came in and found Chanda sitting closer to his sister and in a swank of shame Chanda left the house.

The victim then called her mother and narrated the incident. The matter was reported to the police leading to Chanda’s arrest.

Prison Guards Humiliate Chamisa

By-CCC President Nelson Chamisa was Thursday held for three hours by correctional officers at Chikurubi maximum security prison before they blocked him from seeing MPs Job Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole.

Chamisa Speaks On Strategies To Remove Mnangagwa

By- Opposition, CCC president Nelson Chamisa said he was not too soft on Zanu PF and was strategising to lawfully remove Zanu PF from power.

Former ZANU PF youth league political commissar Godfrey Tsenengamu, who now leads his own party, recently said Chamisa lacks the political clout to dislodge ZANU PF.

But addressing reporters on Thursday at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison where he intended to visit jailed legislators, Job Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole, as well as the “Nyatsime 14”, Chamisa said his party was aware that it is dealing with an oppressive system. He said:

Zimbabwe is a difficult place, I have been listening to people who say ‘no you are being soft’, we know what we are dealing with.

These guys are very determined to go to the full lengths to be very oppressive, but we are also equally determined and I can tell you that the citizens are totally committed and we are very clear about the change that is going to come.

Chamisa claimed ZANU PF has resorted to violence because it is scared of “imminent” defeat. He said:

We have gone into the countryside and there is massive support, that is why they are panicking. They know that defeat is imminent.

You cannot be violent while you have support, you are only violent when you are on your way out. That is the character and conduct of the defeated and losers.

Zimbabwe is scheduled to hold general elections in July or August 2023 but there has been an escalation of politically-motivated violence across the country since the launch of CCC early this year. | NewZimbabwe.com

Harare Student Dupes Lover, Fakes Death

By- A female student at Morgan Zintec Teachers College in Harare allegedly faked her death in a bid to fool her lover.

Pictures of the student, only identified as Shantel, seemingly dead and covered halfway with a blanket, accompanied by the fake death message emerged prompting her grieving college mates to open a WhatsApp condolence group.

However, one of Shantel’s friends disclosed that she was still alive though her whereabouts were not revealed.

Morgan Zintec principal, Tonderai Zenda, told H-Metro the message disturbed a number of students, who were writing their examinations. Said Zenda:

Shantel is one of our bridging course students. She was supposed to be among students sitting for final examinations, but she missed some of the sittings.

We heard a rumour about her death but later learnt that she is alive.

She has not been here since the rumour went around and we are also keen to know from her what happened. It disturbed some students.

A close relative of Shantel said pictures circulating on social media were taken two years ago adding that she is still alive.

H-Metro reported sources as saying Shantel faked her death after she had directed her lover to some people to pay lobola money.

After the lover paid the bride price, Shantel was reported to have devised a plan to fake her own death.

Some people were reportedly hired to act as Shantel’s relatives during the lobola ceremony.

The lover was fooled to believe he was communicating with Shantel’s mother about the death.

Ziyambi Ziyambi Said He Did Not Block Chamisa From Visiting Job Sikhala

Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi has branded CCC leader Nelson Chamisa a “pathological liar” in an angry outburst against the opposition chief who told journalists Thursday his blocked prison visit was reportedly ordered by the Zanu PF top official.

Chamisa was Thursday left disappointed after another failed attempt to see jailed lieutenants Job Sikhala, Godfrey Sithole and 16 party activists who have all been languishing in remand prison at Chikurubi since June, charged with the violence that rocked Nyatsime in the aftermath of CCC activist Moreblessing Ali’s shock murder May this year.

After his first attempt to visit prison was denied two weeks ago, Chamisa engaged lawyers to demand access.

Through correspondence, prison officials appeared to have finally given in to his demands although they set tough conditions for the popular politician to abide by while in the precincts of the country’s biggest jail.

But to his frustrations, the opposition chief was made to wait for more than 2 hours only to be told by the officer in charge, one Hukurume he could not proceed inside to see his comrades on Ziyambi orders.

“I am so disheartened that after we have just been made to wait for three hours, we were invited to the office of the officer in change Mr Hukurume who indicated to us it’s unfortunate that we were not able to see honorable Job Sikhala and the other Nyatsime colleagues, because the Minister of Justice has instructed that we can’t see them,” Chamisa said.

Reached for comment, Ziyambi fumed at what he found to be mischievous dragging of his name into a prison circus.

“That guy is a pathological liar; who did I give that instruction?” Ziyambi said.

“I am not even aware of his request to go and visit prison. I do not stoop that low to go down to administer regulations on who is supposed to go to prison and who should not.

“I have never been asked for permission for relatives to visit prisoners. I am actually hearing it from you that he is saying I denied him entry, when? I am very busy.”

Ziyambi accused the opposition leader of playing to the gallery.

“Chamisa is a politician; he plays to the gallery. I don’t know about it.

“Call the officer in charge and ask him about it. I think that is the fairest thing that you can do because you want me to comment on hearsay. Call the actual person.

“I cannot comment on hearsay. He never came to me but he is accusing me over things that happened when I was not there.

“I have not spoken to any prison officer concerning Chamisa,” he said.

However, attempts to seek comment from Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services Chief Director Legal Resources and Corporate Affairs Commissioner Willie Risiro were not successful.

Commissioner Risiro is the one who issued the letter granting Chamisa the go ahead to visit his comrades.

I Wont Neglect My Projects Beneficiaries, Says Opposition Leader As He Goes On Leave

By A Correspondent| Opposition People’s Unity Party (PUP) leader Herbert Chamuka who is currently on a two week leave has committed to continue with his party projects aimed at helping the vulnerable.

PUP is involved in two major philanthropic projects including Rural Grant Fund meant to assist vulnerable children with school fees as well as mobile phones donation to the elderly.

“I am on leave for two weeks, the acting president will be Alice Phiri but projects and programs of the party will continue as usual through Cde Alice Phiri.

“Rural grant fund which is meant to pay school fees to vulnerable children continues, we also have a project where we are donating mobile phones to the elderly to help them with communication, the elderly women are being raped and abused, so it is important that they have phones to communication when they face difficulties,” said Chamuka.

The South African based politician has thrown his hat into the political ring ahead of the 2023 Presidential elections and has vowed to end the plunder of the country’s mineral resources by the ruling Zanu PF party.

“The country is generally poor, but Zanu PF as a party and its senior officials are very rich, where are they getting the money? Obviously they are looting our minerals.

“This is why they are willing to engage in violence to maintain power and keep looting their resources. Our diamonds are being smuggled to Asian countries for the benefit of a corrupt few. We are therefore saying as a party, we will put a stop to all that and bring accountability,” Chamuka told journalists at the launch of his movement early this year.

Zim’s Media Freedom Index Ranking Exposes Zanu PF Government’s Lack Of Political Will To Take The Country Forward

Zimbabwe was in 2021 ranked number 130 out of 180 countries on the media freedom index, according to the Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

This comes not as a surprise considering that the country continues to wantonly attack, arrest and detain journalists for doing their work.

Since the days when the late former President Robert Mugabe haunted journalists Mark Chavhunduka and Ray Choto for exposing his relationship with his then Secretary Grace Mugabe, the country has never made effort to shrug off the repressive state tag.

The arrest of journalists like Hopewell Chin’ono, Blessed Mhlanga, Charles Dzimwasha and Jeffrey Moyo among others, continue to portray a regime that is scared of the media especially independent press.

Chin’ono whose work has rattled the state as he has on countless times exposed corruption within the state including what is now famed as the COVID-gate.

Chin’ono, a two time CNN Africa reporter of the year was arrested in January 2021 for the third time on trumped up charges of communicating falsehoods prejudicial to the state which were later quashed by the High Court.

This was despite the fact that the same charge against Chin’ono had been outlawed by the Constitutional Court of Zimbabwe, raising questions if it was ignorance on the part of the state or it was just state machinations to silence him for exposing corruption.

Other journalists like Blessed Mhlanga and his colleague Chengeto Chidi endured over six months going to court after they were arrested while covering By-elections in Chitungwiza.

Mhlanga was at some point barred from attending a state function at the State House for no apparent reason with the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Zimbabwe) describing the incident as an attack on freedom of expression.

Charles Dzimwasha who reported extensively on corruption and abuse of power by top government officials has also not had it easy in Zimbabwe.

He was arrested countless times, with suspected state security agents visiting his house in the middle of the night to arrest him.

At one time, he was arrested for breaching COVID-19 regulations despite the fact that the country had long relaxed restrictions put in place to combat the spread of the deadly virus.

In October 2021, over five journalists including Leopold Munhende, Thomas Madhuku, Marshall Bwanya, Nyashadzashe Ndoro and Gaddafi Wells among others were rounded up while covering an opposition MDC Alliance demonstration.

They were detained for over five hours before being released without charge following noise from media rights advocacy groups.

Such incidents have painted Zimbabwe among rogue states with the administration that took over from the late President Mugabe proving to be worse than their predecessors.

This is despite the fact that in his early days in power, President Emmerson Mnangagwa presented himself as a reformist keen to break from the old regime’s politics of vindictiveness.

With the country set to hold elections mid next year, the state is determined to ensure that critical voices are silenced.

The arrest and detention without trial of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) member Job Sikhala cast doubts on the Harare regime’s commitment to free expression.

This combined with endless threats on journalists, makes the impending elections a joke.

Untill the media is free to do its work without hindrance, its going to be hard for independent journalists to operate in Zimbabwe.

Zanu PF Bars Private Media Journalists From Covering Congress

By-Zanu PF has refused to accredit journalists from privately-owned local publications, among them NewsDay, The NewsHawks, and NewZimbabwe, accusing them of bias.

Party spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa on Wednesday said the ZANU PF Politburo resolved to bar NewsDay from covering the event. He said:

For your own information, we have not refused anyone registration except for one particular publication which we feel prefers to write fiction rather than to follow events at the party, if we invite them they will also write fiction.

So, this is where we are. Even the Voice of America will be there and even foreign correspondents.

We have no problem with critical journalism but we don’t tolerate invented stories when we have Press conferences. We also need to be criticised but not on fictitious stories.

ZANU PF information director Tafadzwa Mugwadi said the matter was discussed in the Politburo because it is a serious one. Said Mugwadi:

The matter was an issue in the politburo. When this is discussed in the politburo then it’s a serious issue and a cause for concern. I think this is the time for the publication to reflect.

State security officers recently expelled Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) journalists from a State House event.

AMH publishes The Zimbabwe Independent, a business weekly published every Friday, The Standard, a weekly published every Sunday, and NewsDay/Southern Eye, a daily publication. | NewsDay

Zanu PF Causes Chaos At Delimitation Programme

DELIMITATION: 1 Zanu PF thugs have disrupted a delimitation process that was taking place at Town House in Harare.

One thug wanted to attack mayor Mafume after he had proposed to add 9 more wards to the existing ones.

Harare metropolitan province which has got the highest number of registered voters has 46 wards at the moment. Mayor Mafume had proposed to have 55 wards in total before Zanu PF thugs nearly attacked him.

The size of constituency/ward is determined by the number of registered voters recorded before the voters’ roll for delimitation closed on 30 May 2022. The number of wards are determined by the local authority depending on their capacity to fund the new wards.
Mayor Mafume said they have the capacity to fund the 9 extra wards.- CCC

Tinashe Sambiri| CCC leader President Nelson Chamisa was on Thursday blocked by prison guards from visiting jailed activists.

“MY #NYATSIME16 PRISON VISIT DENIED…

Caught In The Act Raping Grade 7 Pupil

A 33-year-old man from Maraposa Plot in Insuza, Matabeleland North province who was caught red-handed raping a grade 7 pupil in the bush was arrested and dragged to court to answer charges of having sex with a minor.

It was gathered that Nqobani Ndlovu was busted during a bush sex romp with his teenage lover who is a rade Seven pupil at one of the schools from the area.

It is alleged that Ndlovu had a tryst with the 15-year-old girl despite knowing that she was a minor.

Circumstances are that on 26 September at around 4pm Ndlovu met the victim while on her way from school and proposed love to her and she accepted his proposal.

It is reported that afterwards the two parties parted ways as they proceeded to their respective homes.

It is alleged that the following day at around 3pm, the victim who was on her way from school met Ndlovu who reportedly got hold of her hand and asked to have sex with her and she agreed.

Without wasting time, Ndlovu reportedly took the girl to a nearby bush. While in the bush, Ndlovu reportedly caressed and undressed the girl before having sex with her.

While in the act,Ndlovu was spotted by a passerby who then raised an alarm.

Seeing that they had been busted the two lovers fled from the scene but the passerby who had positively identified the girl went and notified her parents.

When she was confronted by her parents, the girl confessed that she was in love with Ndlovu and that they were busted having sex in the bush.

A report was made to the police leading to Ndlovu’s arrest and subsequent appearance in court.

Ndlovu was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to October 28. -B Metro

Chamisa Harassed At Chikurubi

OPPOSITION Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has accused government of gross human rights violations after he was yesterday barred from visiting incarcerated party legislators Job Sikhala (Zengeza West), Godfrey Sithole (Chitungwiza North) and 13 others who were arrested in Nyatsime in June over allegations of inciting violence.
Speaking to reporters soon after being denied entry to Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison where the politicians are being held, Chamisa said: “When a government is at the core and at the forefront of abusing citizens, it’s a difficult thing. In other countries, terrorism is done by sections of society. In our country, terrorism is actually instigated by government. We have issues in the country, and human rights abuses are rampant. Our colleagues have spent over 120 days in prison with no trial. Pre-trial incarceration; detention without trial is a serious international human rights violation. Sikhala, Sithole and all the Nyatsime heroes are not criminals. They have not committed any offence. They are political prisoners and it’s on account of the toxic politics in this country.”

Chamisa claimed that Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi had ordered prison officers to deny him access to his imprisoned colleagues.

Chamisa was made to wait for more than three hours outside the gates. He later met the prison officer-in-charge who turned him away.

This is despite Chamisa having written to prison authorities demanding that he be allowed to visit the incarcerated CCC members. He was granted permission after threatening legal action against prison authorities.

After he was denied entry yesterday, Chamisa told journalists: “We had been made to wait for three hours and after being cleared to enter the prison, we only went to the officer-in-charge’s office who told us the Minister of Justice had banned us from visiting our colleagues.”

“I have listened to people who say, no, you are being soft, but we know what we are dealing with — and these guys are determined to go full length to be very oppressive. We are equally determined, and I can tell you that the citizens are totally determined. We are very clear about the change we want.”

Last week, MDC-Alliance leader Douglas Mwonzora was cleared to visit Sikhala.

Chamisa said he would challenge the restriction.

“It is an embarrassment, a harassment and unacceptable that we have this kind of abuse of the law. Apart from just being an ordinary citizen, I am also a practising lawyer and I have every right to see any client if need be. It is very unfortunate and we will fight this.”

Efforts to get a comment from Ziyambi were fruitless.

Sikhala, Sithole and the other party members were arrested on charges of inciting public violence following violent clashes that erupted between CCC and Zanu PF supporters during the funeral of murdered opposition member Moreblessing Ali in Nyatsime in June this year. Newsday

We are in Mashonaland East today, we reflect with prodemocracy activistsc elders and drivers of the Alternative on the journey we have traveled thus far.

In this video record in the formative stages of the opposition movement is now CCC President Nelson Chamisa

We have been engaged in this struggle because we are convinced that one day Zimbabwe shall be free.

Without conviction it can be difficult to run this race against an trigger happy regime.

We have in the process lost friends, comrades relatives and denied of some of our freedoms because of this struggle.

We do this because we know that there’s no struggle without pain, there’s no struggle without bruises.

Our lessons from decades of naked contact with state repression is that we must never dither- we forge ahead!

Nothing last forever.

World Moves To Eradicate Cholera

A strained global supply of cholera vaccines has obliged the International Coordinating Group (ICG) — the body which manages emergency supplies of vaccines — to temporarily suspend the standard two-dose vaccination regimen in cholera outbreak response campaigns, using instead a single-dose approach.

The pivot in strategy will allow for the doses to be used in more countries, at a time of unprecedented rise in cholera outbreaks worldwide.

Since January this year, 29 countries have reported cholera cases, including Haiti, Malawi and Syria which are facing large outbreaks. In comparison, in the previous 5 years, fewer than 20 countries on average reported outbreaks. The global trend is moving towards more numerous, more widespread and more severe outbreaks, due to floods, droughts, conflict, population movements and other factors that limit access to clean water and raise the risk of cholera outbreaks.

The one-dose strategy has proven to be effective to respond to outbreaks, even though evidence on the exact duration of protection is limited, and protection appears to be much lower in children. With a two-dose regimen, when the second dose is administrated within 6 months of the first, immunity against infection lasts for 3 years.

The benefit of supplying one dose still outweighs no doses: although the temporary interruption of the two-dose strategy will lead to a reduction and shortening of immunity, this decision will allow more people to be vaccinated and provide them protection in the near term, should the global cholera situation continue deteriorating.

The current supply of cholera vaccines is extremely limited.

Its use for emergency response is coordinated by the ICG which manages the global stockpile of oral cholera vaccines. Of the total 36 million doses forecast to be produced in 2022, 24 million have already been shipped for preventive (17%) and reactive (83%) campaigns and an additional 8 million doses were approved by the ICG for the second round for emergency vaccination in 4 countries, illustrating the dire shortage of the vaccine. As vaccine manufactures are producing at their maximum current capacity, there is no short-term solution to increase production. The temporary suspension of the two-dose strategy will allow the remaining doses to be redirected for any needs for the rest of the year.

This is a short-term solution but to ease the problem in the longer term, urgent action is needed to increase global vaccine production.

The ICG will continue to monitor the global epidemiological trends as well as the status of the cholera vaccine stockpile, and will review this decision regularly.

About the ICG
The ICG is an international group that manages and coordinates the provision of emergency vaccine supplies and antibiotics to countries during major disease outbreaks. It manages the global stockpile of the oral cholera vaccine. The group is composed of members of WHO, Médecins Sans Frontières, UNICEF and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The ICG was established in 1997, following major outbreaks of meningitis in Africa, as a mechanism to manage and coordinate the provision of emergency vaccine supplies and antibiotics to countries during major outbreaks.

Since the establishment of the cholera vaccine stockpile in 2013, 120 million doses of oral cholera vaccine doses have been shipped to 23 countries, of which 73 million (60%) has been approved for emergency response.- Source : WHO

Biti Let’s The Cat Out Of The Bag As Assault Trial Continues

By A Correspondent| Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislator Tendai Biti exposed Pokugara Properties Chief Operations Officer Tatiana Aleshina who is a complainant in an assault case where he is the accused saying she is a fraudster fronting many shoddy companies used to steal from Zimbabweans.

Testifying in court today, Biti accused Aleshina of boasting about her involvement in the creation of Augur Investments which later got a tender to construct Airport Road.

“Your Worship, that Aurgur Investments was created by the complainant herself and the complainant advised the state she’s the one who at a Christmas party in 2006 met with Sekesai Makwavarara in order to execute the deal.Aurgur Investments is a company established in Estonia but she contradicted herself now while giving statement to ZACC by saying the company is based in Ukraine. This investigation find out that this company is not in Estonia, this is a creation,” said Biti.

He added that Aleshina was fronting various companies being used to steal from Zimbabweans.

Biti said Aleshina was so powerful that she could bent the country’s laws and still get away with it.

“Aurgur Investments now owns a lot of shoddy companies which includes, Doorex Private Limited, West Properties, Pokugara Properties and Millennium Heights which are being frontend by the complainant herself Tatiana Aleshina,” added Biti.

“The complainant herself is a fraudster who is fronting these shoddy companies to steal from Zimbabweans. Your Worship with someone who is so powerful to bent the laws of Zimbabwe in this caprisious manner she can jail anyone anytime. Tatiana Aleshina connived together with Michael Mahachi to appoint a caretaker Council in order to sign this deal. Without even due process and feasibility study, the complainant was given the contract, she’s so powerful,” added Biti.

The matter was postponed to 31 October for continuation of trial.

Parks Speak On Kwekwe Stray Lions

By- Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) has warned Kwekwe residents to be careful about lions that are roaming around the town.

This follows reports that residents of Mbizo and Msasa suburbs in Kwekwe were living in fear after a local man claimed that he heard a lion roaring while working in his fields.

The man was working in his field along Mvuma road, a few metres away from Eye of the Wild, a sanctuary on the outskirts of Kwekwe.

A message circulation on social media claims the lion is suspected of escaping from the sanctuary, which takes care of orphaned or injured wild animals.

Zimparks regional manager, Kwanele Manungo confirmed to the Chronicle having received the alarm.

She, however, said authorities at Eye of the Wild said their one and only lion was still at the sanctuary. Said Manungo:

As we speak, we are on the ground as we try to track the lion if it’s there. This is after we received calls that a man heard a lion roar while in his fields so we are trying to ascertain if indeed it’s there, but as of now there are no tracks of the said animal. Meanwhile, we urge residents to remain alert and watch their steps.

Chamisa Sets To Grab 10 By-Election Seats

By-The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has announced that the nomination courts were set to seat next week for candidates seeking to fill local government vacancies in Binga, Gweru and Victoria Falls.

The vacancies were largely created by the mass recall of councillors by the Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC-T, with Binga set to have the most by-elections.

Mwonzora recalled the MDC Alliances on allegations of working with the MDC-T’s rival, the Nelson Chamisa-led Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).

In a notice, Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) chief elections officer Utoile Silaigwana said the by-elections will be held on 3 December.

He said six wards were vacant in Binga, three in Gweru, and one in Victoria Falls. Said Silaigwana:

In relation to the election of the councillors for the said wards, nomination courts shall sit on Thursday 3 November 2022 commencing from 10 AM to 4 PM at the offices of the chief executive officer for Binga Rural District Council, for the purposes of receiving nominations of candidates for election as councillors for the vacant wards 6, 8, 10, 15, 20 and 23 and the offices of the town clerk for Gweru Municipality, Gweru, for purposes of receiving nominations of candidates for election as councillors for the vacant wards 4, 5 and 18.

Mnangagwa Aide Blocks Chamisa From Visiting Sikhala

By-Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi has barred CCC president Nelson Chamisa from meeting jailed MPs Job Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole and the other party activists from the Nyatsime area who are currently detained at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison.

Chamisa visited the prison on Thursday morning and was made to wait for three hours before he was informed by prison authorities that he could not see his colleagues.

Ivordale farm workers down tools….

…accuses NEC of approving measly minimum wages

By A Correspondent| Dozens of workers at Ivordale farm in Murehwa are on strike over measly salaries and poor working conditions.

Speaking to this publication on Thursday , vice chair of workers committee, Levy Jackson says there has been a stand off between workers and the administration over pay rise since last week prompting the industrial action on Monday.

“As workers we are saying the wages we are receiving are no longer  tenable because of inflation.

“We have also raised concern on the food rations we recieve they’re are being reduced, “said Jackson.”

The management is not providing protective clothing because most of the farmers have no safety shoes. This has led many to be injured while at work,” he adds.

Workers on industrial action

The human resources manager identified as Mr Mark is reported to be adamant that there will be no pay rise as he is paying  above the minimum  RTGS$ 37 000 dollars gazzetted by NEC.

“The HR manager is saying I can only pay RTGS $45,000 which is not enough even the other arrangement he had suggested of giving us US$40 partly from the salary and the rest in RTGS,” revealed Mr Jackson.

According to a memo by the National Employment Council for the agricultural  industry in Zimbabwe signed on 9 June the lowest grade A1 salary should be US$60 while the maximum wage was set at US$119.

The unions that agreed to the slave wages are the Zimbabwe Agricultural Employers Organisation(ZAEO), Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union(ZCFU), Zimbabwe Farmers Union(ZFU), Commercial Farmers Union (CFU),and Zimbabwe Tobbaco Association (ZTA)on the employers’ side and the General Agriculture and Plantation Workers’ Union of Zimbabwe (GAPWUZ) and Horticulture, General Agriculture and Plantation Workers’ Union of Zimbabwe (HGAPWUZ) on the employees side.

Phillip Mafundu, General Secretary, Progressive Agriculture and Allied Industries Workers Union of Zimbabwe, (PAAWUZ) blasted NEC for the impoverishment of farm workers.

“The NEC for farm workers has dismally failed and I don’t know why it continue to deduct monies from workers when its not representing them.

“No right thinking man would set US$60 payable in RTGS as a minimum wage. There is slavery on the farms and the situation needs our government to intervene as a matter of urgency,” blasted Mafundu.

Koko Matshela Once Touted As The Answer To Zim Power Woes Arrested For Corruption In South Africa

Koko Matshela Once Came To Zimbabwe Proposing To Build A Solar Power Plant

The NPA’s Investigating Directorate have arrested former Eskom acting chief executive Matshela Koko, his wife Mosima and his stepdaughter Koketso Choma on charges of corruption.

The charges relate to a multibillion-rand contract Eskom entered into with Swiss engineering company Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) in 2015. ABB subcontracted to a local company, Impulse International, where Choma was a shareholder. She received R30 million from the deal, some of which then flowed to Mosima Koko.

Koko was a senior executive at Eskom at the time.

The judicial commission of inquiry into state capture, led by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, found that Koko was “an integral component of the Gupta family’s strategy to capture Eskom”.

Zondo recommended that Koko should be criminally investigated for a raft of state capture-related crimes, including the ABB deal and the Guptas’ controversial Tegeta deal.

Private Media Journos Barred From Covering Zanu PF Congress

The ruling Zanu PF reportedly refused to accredit NewsDay journalists to cover its elective congress which is underway in Harare.

Other private media barred from covering the congress are NewZimbabwe.com and TechMag.

According to the NewsDay edition of 27 October 2022, party spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa, said the Zanu PF politburo had yesterday resolved to bar the privately owned daily from covering the event.

“For your own information we have not refused anyone registration except for one particular publication which we feel prefers to write fiction rather than to follow events in the party, if we invite them, they will also write fiction,” Mutsvangwa is quoted as having said referring to NewsDay.

NewZimbabwe.com also reported that it had been barred from covering the congress.
MISA Zimbabwe position

MISA Zimbabwe Chairperson Golden Maunganidze described this development as an attack on the media that would fuel media polarisation.

Maunganidze said this continuing discriminatory culture by political parties and other organisations is unhealthy as journalists should be treated fairly.

“Zanu PF congress is very important in terms of the outcomes that have a bearing on people’s expectations. They trigger national interests among Zimbabweans and journalists should be there and be allowed to cover events,” said Maunganidze.

“We encourage journalists to always carry their identification and accreditation cards to minimise harm by those who might think they are not journalists.”

MISA will continue to lobby and engage political leaders for them to understand the critical role that journalists play.

Glen View Residents Breathe Fire As Municipal Officers Fail To Guard Council Premises

Glen View residents question the credibility of Harare Municipal Police Officers, following the cases of theft that happened in the area’s two Clinics (Glen View Poly and Glen View Satellite), while there were Municipal Police Officers guarding the Clinics.

In June 2020 Glen View Poly lost three by (3x) 5000l water tanks and a television and in October the same year another water tank (1x5000l) was stolen at Glen View Satellite.

The Municipal Police Officers who were on duty when the thefts happened failed to explain what transpired, which resulted in non of the stolen equipment being recovered.

According to the residents, pregnant women are now required to fetch water at the clinic and sometimes referred to get assistance at Budiriro Clinic, due water shortages experienced at the two health centres.

Veterinary Services Order Destruction Of Gokwe Goats

By A Correspondent- A man who transported 81 goats from Gokwe is counting his losses after the livestock was intercepted at a roadblock in Selous and the Department of Veterinary Services ordered the destruction of all the animals.

Gokwe is a high-risk zone for foot and mouth disease.

DESTRUCTION AND DISPOSAL ORDER

Information at my disposal indicates that on 19 October 2022, Eighty-one (81) goats belonging to Mr Masiya Muteyaunga, ID Number 26-146754)26 were intercepted by members of ZRP and Veterinary Services at Selous Roadblock in Chegutu District. The goats were travelling from a high-risk Foot and Mouth disease area of Karombo Village under Chief Chireya, Gokwe. The goats had Police clearance only and no veterinary movement permit. Mr Masiya MUleyatinga, therefore, contravened the Provisions of Animal Health (Movement of animals) Regulation of 1984.

Now, therefore, under and by virtue of powers vested in the Director of Veterinary Services by Section 7, Subsection (3) paragraph (a) of the Animal Health Art (Chapter 19:01) and as read with Section 7, subsection (2) paragraph (a) and (b) of the said Act, the Director orders the destruction of the eighty-one (81) goats and safe disposal of the carcasses. The Provincial Veterinary Officer for Mash West Province or his representative is hereby ordered to destroy the eighty-one (81) goats and ensure safe disposal of carcasses. The destruction and disposal must be witnessed by Police details.

March this year, the Veterinary Services Department gunned down a herd of 12 cattle after crossing a foot and mouth red zone from Gokwe North to Sanyati.

Speaking in an earlier interview with a local publication, Dr Moregood Spargo, district veterinary officer for Zvimba district, said:

FMD (Foot and Mouth Disease) red zones are areas adjacent to national parks. In national parks, there are buffalos which happen to be reservoirs of the virus. There is Chirisa National Park in Gokwe North so there is a possibility that cattle in that area are interacting with buffaloes. Therefore, allowing them to move to other parts of the country increase chances of having the FMD spreading. It’s possible that the cattle killed did not have the FMD but without vetting we could not know that’s why they were killed.

The symptoms of foot and mouths are wounds on the mouth and hooves. Spargo added that it is rare for grownup livestock to die and they usually heal within two weeks.

Zanu PF In Child Abuse Storm

By- Zanu PF mobilised children to protest against Western countries’ sanctions imposed on its senior officials this week.

The party’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, is on the sanctions list and with several of his government’s top officials.

The Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) has since condemned this politicisation of education by Zanu PF.

In a statement, ZPP said it was regrettable that learners were made to abandon lessons and take part in the march at a time some of them are writing public examinations. ZPP said:

ZPP reports that the ruling party ZANU PF has mobilised pupils from different schools in Harare to convene for an anti-sanctions march and exhibition at Moffat Primary School in Arcadia, Harare.

The activity is being engineered by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.

Some teachers across the province have been assigned to mobilise pupils to do arts, particularly poetry, drama, and traditional dances during the anti-sanctions campaign.

This is in violation of Section 75 (a) of the Constitution which states that all citizens and permanent residents of Zimbabwe have a right to education.

This is also during the time students are sitting for their final examinations. ZPP condemns the politicisation of the education system.

The last time the two giants met at Babourfields Stadium back in May, the match was abandoned due to crowd trouble and Bosso were awarded the three points on a 3-0 scoreline.

A lot has changed since that fiasco at Emagumemi.

Back then, Dynamos were at the summit of the table with many tipping them to end their 7-year wait for the championship after a good start to the campaign.

Tonderai Ndiraya’s charges however fluffed their lines and allowed FC Platinum to win their fourth title on the spin, much to the dismay of their ‘7 million fans.’

Bosso on the other hand, were under the guidance of Mandla ‘Lulu’ Mpofu when the two sides last met.

The abandoned match was the former Warriors assistant coach’s last game in charge of Bosso and he was replaced by Portuguese mentor Baltemar Brito.

Brito has overseen a massive revival at Tshilamoya, with the club now aiming for a top four finish.

The Portuguese gaffer’s assistant Joey Lupahla is confident Bosso will collect maximum points against DeMbare, who are still licking wounds after their 0-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Bulawayo City on Saturday.

“National derbies are very difficult. We cannot go by form but it is a boost to the players to give self-belief that when we go to Harare we are capable of going there and getting the three points that we want. It is going to be a massive game but I expect us to go there and make sure that we collect the points,” Lupahla was qouted as saying by The Chronicle.

For Dynamos, a win over their rivals might appease their ever demanding faithful and Ndiraya is confident his charges will emerge victorious.

“We are playing at home so we will try to make sure we use our home advantage and collect maximum points,” he said.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

About Cholera Awareness

Korokoza Killed In Mine Collapse

A gold panner died and four others escaped unhurt after a Bulawayo City Council quarry pit in Parklands suburb collapsed on them while they were illegal mining gold.
The incident occurred yesterday morning at corner of Cecil Drive and Coglan Avenue.

The gold panners discovered that the gravel from the quarry pit that was being used to rehabilitate a section of Cecil Drive had gold hence they were now searching for gold in the pit.

There are heaps of gravel from the quarry pit along Cecil Drive whuich is being rehabilitated by the council.

The discovery of the gold in the gravel has attracted many gold panners who operate mainly under the cover of darkness.

When a Chronicle news crew visited the site of the incident yesterday at about 11AM, the body was yet to be collected.

Two gold panners were on site together with police officers conducting investigations.

One of the panners said he knew the deceased as they had previously worked together at Queens in Inyathi, Bubi District.

“I wasn’t here when it happened but as a gold panner when you hear that a shaft has collapsed, you rush to find out who was involved.

“When we came here we were told that one person died while four others survived,” said a gold panner who did not want to be identified.

He said he positively identified the victim who comes from Lupane.

The gold panner also assisted police officers in contacting the deceased’s family.

He said the shaft collapsed when the panners were working underground.

“This is a council pit so these guys were operating illegally. These are some of the hazards that we face as we try to eke a living. Do I quit because of this? No. Do you stop driving because there has been an accident? So, to me this was just an accident at work,” he said.

He said the panners discovered that there was gold in the area when they found gold nuggets in the gravel that the council is using to rehabilitate the road.

Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident.

“We received a report that an illegal gold miner died while four others escaped when they city council quarry shaft collapsed on them this morning.

“The gold panners illegally entered the quarry pit and started digging for gold, unfortunately the shaft collapsed on them leading to the death of the panner,” said Asst Insp Msebele.

She said the four who escaped, disappeared from the scene.

Asst Insp Msebele warned gold panners against mining at undesignated areas.

Bulawayo has several gold deposits around the city and council has issued mining licenses in some areas.

Council said recently that gold panners had invaded Woodlands while threatening Insiza/Inyankuni pipeline servitude and a tail of Umzingwane dam.

“Illegal mining activities are being conducted in Woodlands, about 1km off the Ncema Treatment Works access road.

“The illegal mining activity have also been observed on the servitudes of the Flowserve, Sulzer and the 30inch clear water pipelines from Ncema Treatment Works to Fernhill Booster Station.

“The closest mining shafts were 5m and 11m away from the pipelines – within the 30m red-zone reserved as servitude for pipeline activity, repair works and maintenance,” read the recent council minutes.

According to the minutes, Town Clerk Mr Dube said urgent attention needs to be taken as the situation has got out of hand.

Mr Dube said water flows were being blocked during the mining process resulting in little or no flow at all to council dams.

He suggested that, if possible, no mining claims be offered in affected areas.

The sealed entranced to the quarry pit that caved in

Council rangers, police officers and the Environmental Management Agency have on several occasions raided the gold panners but this has not been deterrent enough.

Farmers are also counting losses due to the operations of the gold panners as some of their cattle fall into unclaimed pits they leave behind. -Chronicle

Soccer Coach Accused Of Snatching Married Woman

FORMER Highlanders FC and Ngezi Platinum Stars FC coach Bongani Mafu is at the centre of a storm following revelations that he rushed to Bulawayo Central Police Station to file criminal insult charges against a city man who had accused him of having a s_əxual relationship with his wife.

Mafu (57) who resides in Hillside suburb was reportedly confronted by Ndumiso Newman who was accusing him of having a fling with his wife Dudu.

Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed that Mafu filed criminal insult charges against Ndumiso.

“We confirm that we are investigating a case of criminal insult that involves Bongani Mafu and Ndumiso Newman,” she said.

The confrontation reportedly came after Ndumiso stumbled on WhatsApp messages that his wife is alleged to have been exchanging with Mafu.

B-Metro is in possession of the whatsApp messages.

Noting that Mafu was recently sacked from Ngezi Platinum Stars FC where he was the assistant coach, an aggrieved Ndumiso sent him a scathing message which reads: “Isiwule sakho sakuxotshisa umsebenzi…” (Your adulter0us behaviour caused you to lose your job).

Ndumiso fired another furious tirade which read: “…tshiya umfazi wami. Mafu uyisithutha, what I have will destroy you.” (Leave my wife. Mafu you are a fool, what I have will destroy you).

Ndumiso went on to send Mafu a threatening message alleging that he was in possession of a nud3 picture of him and Dudu on their matrimonial bed.

“Mafu what I have will destroy you. I have nud3s of you and my wife sleeping on my bed. I want to send them to your wife,” threatened Ndumiso.

A seemingly unfazed Mafu responded saying: “You are trying hard to gain popularity dinga umfazi omuhle if you want to trap a guy like me.” (If you want to trap me, look for a beautiful wife).

Ndumiso further threatened him saying: “You pretend as if you do not know her …she works at …. Bulawayo offices”

Realising that the threats were mounting on him, Mafu filed a case of criminal insult against Ndumiso at the Bulawayo Central Police Station.

Mafu, who was not answering phone calls from B-Metro for the entire week and even ignored WhatsApp messages that were sent to him, finally answered his phone on Thursday afternoon and refused to entertain questions from this publication.

“Never phone me again. I repeat, Do you understand me, never,” he tersely said before he hung up.

Ndumiso was not reachable on his mobile number.

Meanwhile, Mafu has been in charge of several clubs in and outside the country. He called the shots at Zimbabwe Saints, Highlanders, and was assistant coach of the Zimbabwe national team.

In Botswana, he coached premiership sides such as Gaborone United and Orapa United.
