‘Tsvangirai Speaking From The Grave’

By Luke Tamborinyoka| Exactly four years ago to the day, the doyen of the country’s democratic struggle died. It was only befitting that Morgan Richard Tsvangirai would die on Valentine’s Day—on the day that the power of love is celebrated worldwide— for the man was an iconic patriot who not only loved his country but was reputably a man of love in many other respects.

As per tradition, today’s column is a special dedication in remembrance of Morgan Tsvangirai, a man I served for 10 years as his spokesperson and trusted lieutenant. He was a father, a friend and a boss all rolled into one.

Tsvangirai loved his white wine. He would invariably become free-willed and would open up his mind after several glasses of wine, which he loved just as he loved his golf. Morgan Tsvangirai did not partake any type of beer. While on a trip from Mberengwa to Zvishavane late 2013, I asked him if he had ever taken any type of beer and if so, why he had kicked the habit. He only told me that something embarrassing had happened after he and others had drunk to the advent of a new country in the promising and celebratory days of the roaring 1980s. Since then, he said he had vowed never to drink beer again. I had dutifully refrained from pressing him on the intimate details of the embarrassing episode as it was clear he was not keen to shed any more light on the shameful misadventure, whatever it was.

The late MDC president Morgan Tsvangirai with his spokesman Luke Tamborinyoka
We sat down one evening in 2014 as he exhorted me to write a piece of his personal reflections, almost a year after the stolen election of 2013.

He told me several talking points that touched on the election that had been brazenly stolen against the background of an inclusive government that had engendered so much hope and promise for the country; he frankly spoke about his family, his love life and the despondency he had seen in the countryside in a nationwide tour in which we had together traversed the whole country and engaged citizens in the immediate aftermath of the stolen plebiscite of July 2013. He also spoke about the naive assumption in 2013 that huge voting numbers in the absence of comprehensive reforms would overwhelm any Zanu-PF rigging plot, itself a cardinal lesson for us as the CCC leadership not to lose focus on the reform agenda.

It was a candid and honest exchange that evening as he told me the talking points for his envisaged message to the people of Zimbabwe. He specifically instructed that I should dub the message his “personal reflections”. We agreed that the op-ed would carry his byline so as to befittingly shorn it with the requisite intimate, personal touch.

Deep in my mind, I had attributed the candidness and jovial looseness of mind to the half-empty bottle of white wine that arrogantly stood on the table before him.

However, my conjecture could be wrong. It may not have been the wine as he would later exhibit the same frankness and free-spiritedness when I routinely interviewed him on a wide range of issues for a book that is set to be published in the coming months. For Service and Sacrifice, my forthcoming book, contains hitherto unknown details about his personal views on a wide array of matters, his work in government as well as his interactions and his working relationship with Mr Robert Mugabe, particularly during the tenuous era of the inclusive government.

But the forthcoming book is a story for another day.

That discussion that evening in 2014 for a candid opinion piece under his byline will forever remain ingrained in my mind. Here was the true Morgan Tsvangirai speaking from the heart. Unrestrained, free-flowing, unadulterated and genuine.

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and his spokesman Luke Tamborinyoka
The late opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and his then spokesman Luke Tamborinyoka
Today, in his memory, I republish the epic piece in which he reflected on his love life as well as a despondent country in the aftermath of a stolen election in which Zanu PF had made so many promises but delivered nothing.

Today, having come from yet another stolen election in 2018 in which Zanu-PF promised to do so much and yet has delivered nothing , the country finds itself in the same space in which Dr Tsvangirai wrote the piece below.

Indeed, we are in the same political moment in which Dr Tsvangirai reflected on a diverse array of issues, particularly on a weather-beaten people in the aftermath of an election in which Zanu PF had promised so much and conspired to disappoint.

In his memory, amid a striking congruency in the moment in which his op-ed was written, I will allow Dr Tsvangirai to yet again address a similarly stressed nation from the grave!

Personal Reflections

By Morgan Tsvangirai

The lasting image of the last election that has remained largely ingrained in my mind is of the mammoth crowd that gathered in Harare on what we dubbed the Cross Over rally on July 29, 2013.

It is an indelible image of a nation that was geared for change, a determined people on the brink of crossing over to a new country with new opportunities under a new and competent dispensation.

Now it has been 11 months since the election on 31 July 2013 and the swearing in of the current government of Zimbabwe; but the situation in the country is dispiriting.

Starting on 3rd September 2013, I began a national conversation with the people of Zimbabwe.

I have travelled across the length and breath of our nation, engaging in dialogue with people from all walks of life and holding rallies that attracted multitudes.
In my visits to the various districts after the election, I have seen and witnessed the pain of Zimbabweans, the palpable despair amongst the people as they contemplated a future for themselves and their families under the Zanu PF regime.

The ordinary people of this country are simply failing to cope with life in the current socio-economic circumstances that are upon us.

I spoke to pensioners that have found themselves pauperized, disenfranchised and smothered by the debilitating economic policies and unmitigated mismanagement by the Mugabe government. I saw parents struggling to pay for their children’s school fees and health-care; men and women emasculated by Zanu PF’s failing policies and company closures.

I saw previously employed citizens and those seeking work who now cannot sustain a meaningful life, including university graduates vending airtime vouchers and anything else that can be sold.

Indeed, the nation has become one big mall, a huge ‘ Siyaso ’ market with everyone trying to sell something to someone just to make ends meet.

I saw villagers struggling to buy basics for their families, huge families surviving on far much less that US$1 per day.

The question on everybody’s mind is how so much pain, despair and desperation can immediately follow what our colleagues in Zanu PF would want to call a resounding victory that gave them an overwhelming mandate? From where we had started since the formation of the inclusive government in early 2009 and where we had reached by 2013, notable progress had been recorded and hope for a brighter future sufficiently generated.

The desperate times of the crisis era of 2008 had become a distant memory and a new sense of hope had crept in the country by the time we held the last election.

The past had become another country.

We all thought that the election was going to result in the consolidation of the hope and the progress that had set in the country after 2009.My heart is heavy today, as we accelerate towards the same economic turmoil from where we had rescued the people of Zimbabwe some five years ago!

Closeted at State House, Mr Mugabe remains marooned from the reality of the national situation, oblivious to the daily predicament facing Zimbabweans as they struggle to survive.

The last election

As the elections drew nearer, much of the intelligence we had gathered had pointed to the reality that the shenanigans from Zanu PF were at play.
But we had judged that our sheer numbers were going to overwhelm the electoral mischief Zanu PF had planned. Put simply, we underestimated the level of subversion of the people’s will that had been planned.

I remember my meeting with president Mugabe on the eve of the election, a meeting facilitated by former Nigeria President Olusegun Obasanjo at which I tabled a copy of a couple of pages of the shambolic voters roll that was to be used in the elections the following day.
Mugabe’s response was – Ivo vana Mudede vanombozvifambisa sei ? (How is the Registrar-General Mr Mudede doing his work?). He said this as he retracted into his chair, feigning ignorance of what was about to happen.

Despite our much-concerted efforts to get the electronic voters roll in time and not getting it, we eventually participated in the elections without the said voters roll. As we in the MDC have said, we had assumed that our sheer numbers were going to overwhelm the rigging plot. With the benefit of hindsight, we were wrong!

As the results of the elections became clear to our people on the ground, the nation had once again been shortchanged in yet another electoral fraud.

That election was the beginning of the unprecedented uncertainty and we must budget for more such uncertainty under this dark cloud of illegitimacy. All the hope that had been generated for the nation has simply disappeared.

It had appeared to me after 2008 that Zanu PF had begun to appreciate the overwhelming impact of illegitimacy on all sectors of the economy. We all thought President Mugabe had come to desire a dignified exit. And again, that is as far as my humanity had judged. We were wrong.

But I want to restate that we remain a determined people. We are confident that the change we seek will definitely be achieved well within our lifetime.

Naysayers and doomsayers may be prematurely writing our obituary but we remain focused on what we set out to achieve in 1999. And we will achieve it.

I have great faith in the people of Zimbabwe. We are a heroic people that will not tire until we achieve the peace, stability, democracy and prosperity that our country desires and deserves.

The Economy

Since the contested elections of 2013, the economy is failing to gain any traction. This single issue has brought about an array of problems as the symptoms below reveal.

To the citizen, we have seen insecure jobs to the few that still have them, unfulfilled promises to civil servants and inadequate remuneration as well as the disappearance and diminishing of any form of savings.

Systemic corruption and unbridled avarice have become an albatross of this economy. And this at a time when the country itself is seriously mired in debt, the external debt of which is in excess of $10 billion.

We have a government that has failed to mobilize a rescue package for the productive sector in order to breathe life into this economy. There is unmitigated failure on the part of government to come up with a solution to rescue this abysmal situation.

The policy uncertainty and inconsistencies on key programmes such indigenization and economic empowerment is not helping matters in bringing sanity and predictability, the two key factors for economic stability.

There is an acute lack of investor confidence and support by development partners, driven by the legitimacy crisis, as well as a ballooning debt which remains unserviced. Without legitimacy, the country remains exposed to risk and uncertainty, two factors that determine investment and economic progress.

The government simply has run out of ideas, even in the wake of shrinking revenue collections as a result of a diminishing base. The purported economic blueprint, ZimAsset, needs funding to the tune of $27 billion, and this at time when we have failed to fund an annual budget that needed around $4 billion.

The ZimAsset programme, supposedly the panacea to our economic success, has failed to attract any funding whatsoever.

Our grim economic plight as a people would have been surmountable had there been a credible election last year, even if it had meant a genuine and fair loss by the MDC-T.

The business sector has been crippled and shackled by a biting liquidity crunch, creating a gridlock that has negatively affected commerce and the services sector.

Do nations fail due to the inflexibility of mindsets and do nations succeed due to the flexibility attitudes? True and honest leaders should know that at any particular time, the success and failure of nations can only be located in the mindset of the national leadership in the seat of government.

Lastly, despite all our shortcomings, I believe a sunrise is possible and the dawn must start within our well-meaning selves.

Despite Africa’s investment attractiveness and a rising appetite for African products across the world, Zimbabwe has missed out on this emerging optimism on Africa that would have done wonders for our economy.

A man greatly misunderstood

As the leader of a great people’s movement, the MDC, and with a mandate derived directly from the people, it is my desire to drive this struggle to its logical conclusion.

But I am saddened by the preoccupation with false narratives that are meant to divert us from the real problems facing the people. One such preoccupation is the pursuit of the issue of my assumed weakness with women.

After my wife died in an accident back in 2009, life has not been easy going– that fateful day will not leave me. But despite sad experiences, life continues.

As you all know, due to extensive publicity in the media with respect to my relationships with women, an attempt has been made to portray my perceived errors to be the sum total of who I am.

It is possible after such a loss for one to be on an emotional roller coaster. This becomes more acute as one grapples with the adjustment to a life without a partner who anchored you socially, at the same time laden with the burden of national responsibility to address an intricate national crisis.

As a leader, I have come to terms with the nature of public office as requiring public accountability. I am continuing to reflect and strive to live up to those high expectations. I have fought for the proliferation of media in Zimbabwe, as I am a firm believer in the necessity of the checks and balances that the media provide.

I have since moved on and now share a commitment with my wife, Elizabeth. I have taken ownership of my responsibilities, which I continue to meet within my resources.

The other false narrative is that I want to die in office. I will state unequivocally that I have no intention of staying a day longer at the helm of the MDC without the people’s mandate.

But I will also pronounce, with the same vigour and vehemence, that I will not be hounded out undemocratically through a hostile take-over outside a people’s process called a party Congress.

We cannot be self-contradictory as to claim to be democrats when at the same time we want to remove elected leadership through a coup de tat . Our national council has taken a position to bring forward our party Congress from 2016 to October this year. It is at that platform where all positions, including the Presidency, are open for contestation and I urge fellow party members to understand that it is that forum that elects and removes leaders.
Party members know that even the Presidency is open for contestation by any nominated member and I make a guarantee that no one will be stopped from contesting for any position because we are a democratic Party.

Our international Relations

The current national reality is that we are isolated from meaningful investment capital flow and substantial development financial assistance.
Zanu PF’s narrowly focused and confined “Look East” policy has not yielded direct fiscal support.

We have had a myopic foreign policy that overlooks the significance of the broader international community, thereby underplaying the potential of leveraging international relationships in a broad sense.
We must once again rejoin the family of nations, in its wide scope, in mutually beneficial relationships, but largely driven, on our part, by the desire to enhance and further the interest of the ordinary citizen of this country.

Zimbabwe needs friends, strategic partners and promoters across the breath of the international community. Our international relations, even at the regional level, require fixing.

We have been consistently inconsistent for so long that there are not many takers supporting our plans for the way forward. The safest bet is to shift our mindset towards new thinking and new pronouncements that are inclined towards mutually beneficial policies.

My Vision

I envision a new Zimbabwe.

I see a great nation rising from the ashes of Zanu PF misrule. I see the realization of our promise for a better future for our children and our great grandchildren in a land full of happiness and abundance.

I see the possibility of reconciliation of all peoples; a nation working together in resolving its confidence crisis.
I envision a Zimbabwe with a new ethos, where people live in peaceful co-existence regardless of their cultural, ethnic, racial, religious or political differences.

Given our traumatic past, we must learn to tolerate and reconcile with each other; to draw a line in the sand and say never again should any citizen be slaughtered on ethnic, racial, political or any other grounds for that matter. We must be an inclusive, united society that is ready to swim or sink together, where diversity is celebrated rather than punished.

It is the celebration of our differences that will ultimately make our democracy hold.

In the new Zimbabwe, there will be no compromise on the dignity of the citizen, which, thankfully, is now enshrined in our Constitution. All citizens must enjoy the true meaning of life by being treated equally by government and all state institution. The equality and dignity of all citizens will be the cornerstone of our democracy in the new Zimbabwe.

We aspire for a Zimbabwe characterized by economic prosperity, with notable increases of GDP and individual income levels. A country with increased productivity through strategic investment partnerships in the agricultural, manufacturing and mining sectors; productivity that will ultimately benefit the ordinary citizen.

I envision a new Zimbabwe with a modernized transport infrastructure that includes the resuscitation of the competitiveness of our national airline. We need to invest in upgrading our airports to promote commerce, trade and tourism.

I see a new Zimbabwe where the participation of women and the youth in mainstream economic activities is guaranteed and encouraged.

We aspire for a new nation with an accountable government; a country where a prosperous economy prevails underpinned by the rule of law, political stability, policy consistency and predictability.
We must build a corrupt-free Zimbabwe with a government that is at the forefront of aggressively tackling systemic graft and dismantling the rise of unjust scales.

An efficient public service is the cornerstone of an efficient government.

There is need in the new society we envisage to de-politicize the public service; to harness efficiencies and new competences as well as implementing institutional transformation to prepare public institutions with the onerous role to efficiently serve the people of Zimbabwe.
Efficient social service delivery will engender happiness among our citizens by ensuring the provision of affordable and qualitative clean water, healthcare and education across the nation.

We strongly believe in the sacred commitment to our liberation war and democratic struggle heroes and heroines. I pledge that these will be fully recognized as the champions of our country’s important struggles and mechanisms will be put in place not only to celebrate and honour them, but to respond to their family and welfare needs through sustainable means.

Way forward

In January this year, I made a state of the nation address in which I spoke of the need for dialogue to address the debilitating economic and social crisis that we face.

I notice the emerging consensus on my call for dialogue. The same call has been made by international institutions, Cabinet Ministers, economists and civic society.
Given our current economic paralysis, that national conversation to rescue the nation has become more urgent than ever before.

There is an urgent imperative for a national conversation of more players than just political parties. The important aspect is that our dialogue must this time be broadened to include the trade unions, the church, students, industry and other stakeholders.

The broad spectrum of stakeholders in that important dialogue must discuss, find consensus and map the way forward on the current economic crisis, the endemic poverty across the length and breadth of the nation and the massive unemployment in the country.

Those outside of our struggle who are impatient for a solution outside of well-meaning dialogue must recognize that democracy without stability leads to nowhere, but equally, stability without democracy and dialogue cannot lead to national prosperity.

Lastly, we have walked this tortuous road together. We bear permanent scars from this our tenacious quest for peace, prosperity and development in the country of our birth.

Zimbabwe is the only country we have.

Zimbabweans bear testimony to my personal desire to see the fruition of the people’s struggle for positive change.

I cannot even begin to count the personal loss to each one of us in our pursuit of happiness, democracy, stability and prosperity in a new Zimbabwe.

I know only too well what it means to be a true patriot driven only by the desire for a prosperous, democratic nation.

For I too have borne the brunt of repression as a reward for my unstinting patriotism. I have been beaten up in a police station and faced serious trumped up charges, lost a loved one and endured the loss of so many cadres in this tortuous journey towards our democratic transformation.

But beyond our painful collective national experience lies a new country with new hope and abundant opportunities. The sunset of our struggle will lead to a sunrise of abundance and success.

In spite of our deep scars, we shall persevere to the very end.

We are a heroic people.

We will certainly outlive our current setbacks and the dark and traumatic experience of political violence, our burnt houses, the rapes and the murders we have suffered along this painful road. They have failed to break our collective spirit.

I have no doubt in my mind that regardless of how long it may take, we shall eventually overcome and cry the tears of joy.

PTUZ Speaks On Whether Teachers Will Report For Duty

By A Correspondent- The President of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ), Dr Takavafira Zhou has said the union’s members decide the course of action and the best way forward on whether to report for work or not.

He speaks after reports that he had encouraged PTUZ members to report for work this Monday. Since the 7th of February when schools resumed, some teachers have not been reporting for duty saying they are incapacitated despite the government increasing their salaries by 20 per cent and offering US$100.

In response to the industrial action, the employer suspended those participating for three months without pay leaving many confused. Some are for the continuation of the strike while some are considering going to work. Pindula News presents Zhou’s statement:

PTUZ Members Decide Course of Action and Best Way Forward not Leaders

My phone has been inundated since morning by PTUZ members over a malicious Sunday Mail report that I have said PTUZ members are reporting for work tomorrow (Monday 14 February 2022). For the record, I never said that, but indeed I spoke to a Sunday Mail reporter by the name of Debra. I indicated to her that PTUZ leaders are conveyor belts that communicate what members would have agreed on.

I unequivocally indicated to her that even if some teachers are willing to report for work I did not see how they could do that as they are incapacitated. I also reiterated that govt must have offered teachers a rescue package to afford them to report for work whilst they are waiting for the next payday as they are virtually incapacitated. Never in our discussion did I usurp members’ rights to decide a course of action collectively.

By way of this communique, I also request provincial chairpersons to swiftly collate provincial reports on members’ input and suggestions on the best way forward. My only candid advice is that members must be guided by PTUZ philosophy of making maximum gains and minimum losses.

Any genuine struggle has casualties and we must be able to know our weaknesses and strengths as well as the weaknesses and strengths of the govt in order to fight a thousand battles without losing one. The uniform of a guerilla is the colour of his/her enemy.
Venceremos.

Fierce Boardroom Fight Haunts POSB

By A Correspondent- A fierce boardroom fight has erupted at the People’s Own Savings Bank (POSB) over retired chief executive officer Admore Kandlela’s decision to hold on to the job despite having been paid lucrative terminal benefits.

Highly placed sources within the POSB management and board this told NewZimbabwe.com Kandlela’s bid to remain on the position is being viciously resisted by some board members and senior management at the bank.

The sources also said Kandlela is currently in the middle of negotiating a new lucrative contract in a development that has ruffled furthers at the institution.

“Kandlela was due to go on retirement as far back as 2013, however through political connections his employment contract kept on being extended since then. Just recently, he was paid all his terminal benefits. He even took with him almost brand-new vehicles which he used during his last tenure,” a source said.

“We were surprised in the last few weeks to unearth that Kandlela is in the midst of negotiating a fresh employment contract and from my understanding, he is set to receive new vehicles and other benefits. This is worrisome since it will elbow out other contestants who are hoping to get the job,” the source said.

The source further alleged Kandlela has been frequenting the CEO’s offices in the last few weeks prompting many to suspect that he has bounced back.

“Information doing the rounds at POSB is that that some high level officials within the finance ministry are backing his comeback as he is seen as a good linkage ahead of the bank’s privatisation amid suspicion that some politically heavyweights want to usurp controlling stake,” added the source.

According to the source, these developments have riled a section of the management and the board, hence the emergence of deep division which, if not dealt with urgently, could plunge the institution into a crisis.

Contacted for comment Kandlela said he was still below the legally acknowledged retirement age.

“I am still below retirement age,” he said, adding: “What a pity. This post is being advertised in the press. Watch out this coming week and apply for the post please. It’s being advertised through Proserve for these complaining younger candidates. There are no unnecessary additions. I am still below retirement age.”

Further quizzed on the rationale behind the bank’s move to advertise a post whose candidate has already been identified, Kandlela quipped: “You need better facts face to face. What paper is this?  Why are you afraid of a face-to-face meeting?” he said.

“It’s Informed By Earnings”: RBZ Governor John Mangudya Defends Bank Withdrawal Limits

By A Correspondent- Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor John Mangudya defended bank withdrawal limits announced on Monday last week, saying the new levels were above average formal sector salaries.

This comes after criticism from stakeholders including a former finance minister, Tendai Biti, who said Mangudya was using the withdrawal limit to block access to the Zimbabwean dollar as a means to control inflation.

Florence Taruvinga, the president of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) said the increase was insignificant.

She said:

The nominal increase, while welcome, is not adequate as the percentage increase is below the annual inflation rate, which implies that in real terms there was no increase.

Exports and remittances have increased quite markedly over the period, 2020 to 2021 for instance, exports rose from US$3.7 billion in 2020 to US$6.2 billion in 2021, while remittances rose from US$1 billion in 2020 to US$1.4 billion in 2021.

Mangudya set new mobile banking limits per transaction of ZW$25 000 and ZW$10 000 for person-to-business and person-to-person transactions, respectively.

Previously, the limits were ZW$20 000 and ZW$5 000, respectively.

The maximum limit for individual-to-business transactions was set at ZW$100 000 per week while the person-to-person transfer limit was set at ZW$70 000 per week.

Speaking at an event organised by the Zimbabwe Economic Society to review the MPS, Mangudya said in arriving at the limits, the bank was informed by average salaries.

He said:

We were of the view, and we are still convinced, that the figures which are there are quite high.

If you look at the average salaries in Zimbabwe, they aren’t all that high.

How many people are earning more than ZW$50 000 or ZW$60 000 in the general economy?

They are not as many as you think they are. So, we looked at the general salaries in the market.

He said ZW$100 000 is equated to US$417, using a parallel market rate of US$1:$240. A salary of ZW$50 000 or ZW$60 000 translates to US$208 or US$250, respectively.

Mangudya added that RBZ will be monitoring the numbers and adjusting the limits accordingly.

He said the limits were also meant to limit foreign currency parallel market activities.

While the new limits were based on average salaries in the formal sector, about 60% of Zimbabwe’s economy is now in the informal sector, which is rarely considered in government planning.

ED Admin Closely Monitoring Chamisa, Hichilema Relations

By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration is closely monitoring Nelson Chamisa, the leader of opposition Citizens Coalition for Change and Zambia’s president Hakainde Hichilema’s relations, a local publication reported.

Chamisa has been friends with Hichilema when the latter was also in the opposition before defeating Edgar Lungu in last year’s election.

Following his victory, there were fears that the wave of change might spread across the region, a development that could prove costly to conservatives and former revolutionary parties in the region which include ZANU PF and ANC in South Africa.

The NewsHawks reports that President Mnangagwa is one of those worried sick and scared stiff of a potential major geo-political and electoral shift in the country amid reports that Chamisa held meetings with Hichilema twice inside five months.

This comes as veteran Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga, who is also close to Chamisa, is believed to have high chanes of winning elections scheduled for 9 August.

The NewsHawks was told that Mnangagwa became very attentive since Hichilema’s invitation to Zimbabwe’s opposition leaders, to his inauguration. An intelligence source told the NewsHawks:

Since HH (Hichilema) came to power, the intelligence has been working hard to establish the nature of their relations and whether it involves financial support. Their worry is on various fronts: diplomatic, political and geopolitical.

Diplomatically, the issue is whether this won’t damage relations between Zambia and Zimbabwe; politically if HH supports Chamisa and his CCC, and in geopolitical terms how this will influence relations between the two countries and power relations in the region.

Bluntly put, Mnangagwa is worried that HH may fund Chamisa and influence the outcome of the 2023 elections, mainly the presidential poll.

When Chamisa flaunted his close relations with Hichilema, saying he had called him after his victory, Mnangagwa came out to claim that he was a friend to the Zambian leader and his wife, in fact, a relative.

Ziyambi Ziyambi Haule To Court Over High Court Fees

By A Correspondent- A Chivhu-based cleric Abinel Mukaro has dragged Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi and Attorney-General Prince Machaya to the High Court over “unreasonable” court fees, which he said impeded people from accessing justice.

Mukaro is challenging Statutory Instrument 221 of 2020, which he says was unconstitutional as it infringes on his right to equal benefits from the law as well as his right to access courts.

In his founding affidavit, Mukaro said his wife died on September 12, 2021 after being severely assaulted by members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) stationed in Chivhu, and gave notice of intention to sue the police and proceeded to issue summons.

He said he was instructed to be ready to pay the Registrar of the Court 1% of the amount that he was claiming, which amounted to $10 266 for service of the summons.

“I cannot afford these fees due to my precarious financial position, but I believe I am entitled to have my case heard by the court and I do not believe or qualify to be represented as a pauper nor would I want to,” Mukaro said.

“I am advised that Ziyambi, in terms of section 57 of the High Court Act, fixes fees that are payable to the Registrar for issuing of process.

“The High Court (Fees) (Civil Cases) Regulations, 1992 published in the High Court (Fees) (Civil Cases) (Amendment) Rules, 2020 (No 11) entitles the Registrar to charge an extra 1% for issuing summons where the claim sounds in money. This is in addition to the fees payable under item 1, which is $1 000. I believe that there is no basis or rationale, for charging the extra 1% as I am advised that the duties of the Registrar are the same in respect to actions whether sounding in money or not.

“I am advised that section 56(1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe provides that ‘All persons are equal before the law and have the right to equal protection and benefit of the law’. I believe requiring me to pay 1% of the amount that I am claiming in a wrongful death action infringes and deprives me of my right to equal benefit of the law.”

He said SI 211 of 2020 was, therefore, unconstitutional.

“I am humbly praying that the registrars entitlement to be paid 1% of a  claim sounding in money be declared unconstitutional and that item 2 of item two of the High Court (Fees) (Civil Cases) Regulations 1999 published in the High Court (Fees) (Civil Cases) Amendment rules 2020 Statutory Instrument 211 of 2020 (No 11) be set aside,” Mukaro said.

Ziyambi and Machaya are yet to respond to the application.

ED Fires Warning Shots At Divisive Elements

By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa has warned divisive elements within Zanu-PF that “it is cold out there” as factionalism continues to rock his party ahead of the March 26 by-elections.

Addressing a rally in Epworth at the weekend, Mnangagwa admitted that the party’s internal elections held in December last year were very chaotic amid allegations of vote-rigging, violence and factionalism.

“I am aware that we have by-elections coming up and during the provincial elections, we got reports that they were chaotic. Conflicts are accepted in the party but if a candidate wins, we must all embrace the result and rally behind them,” he said.

“We do not want thieves. I am told some of the candidates ran away with ballot papers during primary elections. If you are the one who disappeared with ballot papers, let it be the last time. Zanu-PF loves peace.

“You must follow the laws that are in the party. Respect the laws of the party.  Do not join the opposition. Do not ever attempt to leave. It’s cold out there.”

Mnangagwa blamed lack of development in the country on the late former President Robert Mugabe’s era, saying that at that time, money that was meant for development was looted.

“I sometimes question where money meant for development went during the First Republic, but I’m quick to put myself to order (keep quiet) as I was also part of the old regime.”

Political analyst Eldred Masunungure said: “Assuming it was not a miss of the tongue, that is staggeringly shocking and yet unwittingly true, especially from a regime that consistently seeks to distance itself in word and deed from the so-called first
republic.”

Mnangagwa also claimed that opposition Citizens Coaliton for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa would not rule the country, saying it would be a difficult feat for him to achieve.

But CCC national spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said Chamisa’s victory was certain whether Mnangagwa liked it or not.

“CCC has gone viral and has caused Zanu-PF and Mnangagwa to go on panic mode. It is the people that will decide who will get to State House,” she said.

Political commentator Effie Ncube described Mnangagwa’s statement as irresponsible.

“It shows a complete disregard of the democratic tenets and the people who are supposed to be electors. Whether the opposition stays in the opposition forever or the ruling party stays in power forever, it is not something to be decided by the President. It is out of his control. No party stays in power forever regardless of what it is doing,” he said.-Newsday

WATCH: State Snakes Waiting To Strike Chamisa

In October 2020, Emmerson Mnangagwa’s spokesperson, George Charamba mocked CCC leader Chamisa for leading a fractured MDC Alliance, and said he will soon be squeezed in by state infiltrarors.

At a time when an announced murder plot has resulted in the Human Rights Watch Director, Dewa Mavhinga dying under unexplained circumstances, this is 12 minutes, part of a 4 year investigation over Zim state agents who are waiting to hit CCC President Nelson Chamisa. It reveals a syndicate currently involved in fundraising for Chamisa under the guise of citizen support, while at the same time assembling to ambush Zimbabwe’s most popular politician’s organisation with a litany of false charges, ranging from sexual misconduct, to the worst which is terorrism. This way Chamisa will either be slowed down, or be stopped totally.

In October 2020, Emmerson Mnangagwa’s spokesperson, George Charamba mocked Chamisa for leading a fractured MDC Alliance, and said he will soon be squeezed in by state infiltrarors.

He said: ” Clearly both the young man and all those around him, all of them barely sharper than a mallet by way of intellect and analysis, thought silence in politics means nothing, however brooding and foreboding!

“And looking into the crystal ball? Well, Chamisa

“…set to bleed terminally, both from internal injuries & from external blows. After this analysis has settled, & all those who think can yell and bark angrily for him are done, I will come back on the external blows that await him, mortal blows at that. Good evening maComrades!”

Mnangagwa Unleashes CIO On Chamisa, Hichilema

By- President Emmerson Mnangagwa is stalking Zambia President Hakainde Hichilema and opposition Citizens Coalition for Change leader Nelson Chamisa relations.

Zanu PF Aspiring MP Threatens Violence Against Chamisa, Investors

By-Zanu PF aspiring MP for Binga North, Kudakwashe Munsaka, has allegedly threatened an International Anti-Poaching Foundation (IAPF) investor he accuses of funding the opposition party in the area.It is alleged that the Binga Rural District Council (RDC) intervened and begged the investor to stay.
“The Binga North aspiring MP threatened IAPF, which has a project in the Sinamsanga
community.
“The investor had threatened to leave the area resulting in the (Binga) RDC engaging them,” the source said.
Ward councillor Voice Munsaka confirmed the developments.
“Kudakwashe came to my ward where the investor was working and verbally attacked the workers there.
“The workers were questioned, including a recalled councillor Margret Valley, who works there. She is now an aspiring candidate for Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC),” Musanka said.
“Kudakwashe was accusing the investor of supporting the CCC candidate. The investor has a scholarship programme for schoolchildren.
“Last year, 125 students were selected in Binga, and this year the investor intended to award scholarships to at least 200 students.”
He said Kudakwashe claimed that the scholarship programme was benefiting children of members of the CCC party.
“The issue with the investor was resolved. But Kudakwashe went on to impound illegal fishing boats in the area,” he said.
Binga DCC Land Kabome said the issue being raised was petty.
“It was just a petty issue. Call me later,” Kabome said, but his number was no longer reachable.
Kudakwashe said: “I do not have much to say except that I did not threaten anyone. Valley is not an IAPF member, but a CCC activist.”
In 2019 Binga district development co-ordinator Lydia Banda-Ndethi was redeployed to Bulawayo following accusations that she has been working with non-governmental organisations and opposition councillors in the area without clearance.
Ndethi was then demoted for allegedly boycotting a function which was attended by Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga.

Prophet Predicts Chamisa Election Victory

By Farai D Hove | A west African prophet has delivered an oracle saying ZANU PF President Emerson Mnangagwa faces imminent death.

The prophet, Apostle Newman, said Mnangagwa is mislead by false prophets. He added saying the future of Zimbabwe is in the hands of a young man called Chamisa. He said in full:
The current President of Zimbabwe if you don’t leave office when your time is genuinely due, you will die there, you won’t even see the next term. Zimbabwe is a nation loved by God and a nation that loves God.
There are still people who are praying in Zim for the will of God to be done even though there are many false dirty prophets, carrying themselves. There is a man called Emeritus as well, if I am not mistaken they made him His Excellency. I don’t know if he was made Excellency by this same president.
Mr President you must be desperate; making prophet excellency doesn’t mean the excellency is in you. The great excellency is Jesus. Mr President of Zim get on your knees and seek god’s face yourself.
If you want to hear the truth God’s will for you, God’s plan is for you to finish your term, and go to your house, Zimbabwe oh Zimbabwe, hear this: tell your president, if he wants to live long, let him finish your term, and let him retire to his house.
Don’t be fooled because if you die these same prophets, these excellencies, and her excellencies and all these Passion Fruit, navigation javas, they will not die with you. Go and read the Bible these prophets have mislaid many Kings in the past and they die, by not listening to the voice of God. Nobody can cheat Zimbabwe of her destiny.
God is particular about Zimbabwe now, do you know the future of Zimbabwe is a young man called Chi Chamisa? A young man is the future of Zimbabwe not the man that is there now. Let the true prophetic voices in Zim start speaking, and not these entertainers, Passion Fruit Navigating Javas, these men are pocketing your national cake in their pockets, claiming God is speaking through them.

Ngarivhume Involved In Car Accident With 2 Identical Speeding Vehicles | FULL TEXT

Transform Zimbabwe President Jacob Ngarivhume updates Zimbabweans on how he was squeezed in by two identical cars, an accident that happened before the two identical vehicles sped off without stopping.

By Jacob Ngarivhume | I was involved in a bizarre accident this afternoon near Bora, Murewa. As I was driving towards Harare, a Honda Fit in front of me suddenly stopped in the middle of the road, I applied emergency brakes and stopped behind him.

Meanwhile there was another Honda Fit coming in my direction, he was speeding and coming towards me. I managed to just avoid him and we side swiped, damaging my review mirror.
Interestingly both Honda Fit vehicles were similar in make, colour and all. None of the two cars stopped, the one in front took a left turn and sped off and the one I side swiped with did not stop either.
In the abandance of precaution I decided to continue my drive to hare as well and only filed a police report at Waterfalls police who referred me to Mbare police.
In the last couple of days I was interacting with school children from the Mashonaland Provinces. I will post details of the tours later.

Mnangagwa Sweats Over President Chamisa’s Rising Popularity

Tinashe Sambiri|Citizens’ Coalition For Change spokesperson, Advocate Fadzayi Mahere has pointed out that the Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa is in panic mode due to President Nelson Chamisa’s ascending popularity.

Addressing Zanu PF supporters at a rally in Epworth on Saturday, Mr Mnangagwa boasted : “Endai muudze veopposition kuti munhu arimuHarare akatanga kufamba kuenda kuChina netsoka anotanga kusvika opposition isati yapinda muState House.”

Advocate Mahere responded:
“This is panic-mode of the highest order. The citizens will decide who gets into State House. If the citizens choose him, President @nelsonchamisa will lead whether they like it or not. Only those afraid of the people would make unconstitutional statements like this.”

Citizens’ Coalition For Change vice chairperson Hon Job Sikhala said Zanu PF forced thousands of dejected citizens to attend Mr Mnangagwa’s rally.

“We don’t force people into buses to attend our rallies. I met 2 ZUPCO buses here at Nyamweda Shopping Centre in Mhondoro looking for people to go to the Old People’s home Rally in Harare.Ndiyo inonzi desperation.”

Citizens’ Coalition For Change Youth Assembly spokesperson Stephen Sarkozy Chuma tweeted:
“So @edmnangagwa and his corrupt officials chose one of the poorest settlements, Epworth to showcase their ill gotten affluence. Epworth is a pure reflection of ZANU PF plunder & 42 year mismanagement. No proper roads, no running water, no electricity etc. Choose #CCC.”

Mavaza Says: Opposition Parties Will Struggle To Win

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | On December 10, 1963, Zanzibar achieved independence as a member of the Commonwealth. … Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume, leader of the ASP, was installed as president tof the People’s Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba Julius Nyerere, independence leader and “baba wa taifa” for Tanganyika (father of the Tanganyika nation), ruled the country for 23 years while Abeid Amaan Karume, governed Zanzibar as its president and Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania.

Victor Matemadanda and Dr Masimba Mavaza in studio

Since 1962 his political party the Chamachamapinduzi has been in power. Every election the party is re-elected and the opposition has failed to penetrate.

Angola achieved independence in 1975 through the Alvor Agreement. After independence, Angola entered a long period of civil war that lasted until 2002.

The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) has ruled Angola since independence in 1975. From 1975 to 1991, it was the sole legally existing party in a political system inspired by the model then practised by the socialist countries of Eastern Europe. The MPLA fought against the Portuguese army in the Angolan War of Independence from 1961 to 1974, and defeated the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) and the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA) in the Angolan Civil War. The party has ruled Angola since the country’s independence from Portugal in 1975, being the de facto government throughout the civil war and the ruling since its end.

The Mozambican War of Independence was an armed conflict between the guerrilla forces of the Mozambique Liberation Front or FRELIMO and Portugal. The war officially started on September 25, 1964, and ended with a ceasefire on September 8, 1974, resulting in a negotiated independence in 1975. Frelimo has been in office since then..

September 6, 1968-April 11, 1973): The British protectorate of Swaziland formally achieved its independence from the United Kingdom on September 6, 1968. Since then the opposition has ruled from a from a distance.
Over the last four decades there’s been some progress towards institutionalising multiparty democracy in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite these elections in the region rarely result in changes of government
A recent survey by Afrobarometer – a non-partisan African research network confirmed sheds some light on why this is the case.

In Africa the opposition parties face major obstacles to winning majority support. These include the fact that they aren’t trusted as much as governing parties and that very often they aren’t seen as a viable alternative to the dominant ruling party. They are normally there to make money a feat which horrifies the electorate.

Most countries which are governed by parties that emerged from liberation movements and have been in power for decades since independence do not have opposition posing a threat at all. Although some of these incumbents have lost some electoral support in recent years, opposition support has not been high enough to unseat them.

In Namibia and Mozambique levels of trust in opposition parties were found to be at the highest levels ever. But in Zimbabwe trust in the political opposition declined sharply after 2008/2009. Similarly, the proportion of Zimbabweans who said they felt “close to” an opposition party dropped from 45% in 2009 to 19% in 2014 said African barometer a survey organisation.

Take the example of Botswana. The Botswana Democratic Party, in power since independence in 1966, is the region’s most enduring dominant party. It has even adopted the slogan “*There is still no alternative”.*
After losing an election, opposition parties should monitor and criticise the government in order to hold it accountable. This is how democracy should work.

Once an election is over, opposition parties and politicians should accept defeat and cooperate with the government to develop the country potential voters if they are seen to be constantly criticising the ruling party rather than contributing to the country’s development. Opposition parties might do better if they highlight their policy platforms and gain citizen confidence in their plans.

So in short despite the noise they make the opposition is not yet ready to govern.
It is true that the opposition will take very long before they can be trusted with power.
Democracy is not seen in the changes of political parties. Countries which are labelled as examples of democracy in Africa have had one party ruling since independence.

These are countries lime Botswana, Mozambique,Tanzania and South Africa.

So for for the CCC they can make as much noise as possible but ZANU PF is here to stay.

Ginimbi Snake Money Doesn’t Exist

Genius “Ginimbi” Kadungure’s ex-wife, Zodwa Mkandla has responded to claims that the late popular socialite and millionaire used witchcraft to get his riches.

Zodwa and her hubby, the late Ginimbi

On YouTube show City Girls with Tebogo Thobejane on Tuesday, 8 February, the businesswoman said Ginimbi was a hard worker who never used witchcraft, but believed in God.

People in Mzansi learnt about him when he died in a shocking car crash in 2020. He was accused of using witchcraft and of having a snake to get his wealth.

Tebogo asked Zodwa, who was married to Ginimbi for 10 years before they split in 2017, about the claims.

“There’s a lot of allegations about particularly the practices of witchcraft, that Genius had a snake that gave him riches,” said Tebogo.

Zodwa quickly responded, saying: “Do you believe a snake can give you money? If there’s a snake that could vomit money like people claim, I’m sure all of you would find your own snakes. Why I’m saying that is because there’s no snake that vomits money.

“If a snake came right now here and vomits money, I’d want to see the person who’s going to remain picking the money. I lived with that man for 10 years, I’ve never seen a snake. Maybe I’m the snake, but I never saw any.”

She said Ginimbi only knew God and never practised witchcraft.

“The only thing that Genius knew was God. For the years I’ve known him, he used to go to church with me and things like that. I don’t know anything about witchcraft, there is no witchcraft,” she said.

She also clarified the rumours that Ginimbi knew he was going to die and that’s why he bought himself a coffin a week before he died.

He was buried in a Versace coffin.

“That is not true, guys. That coffin was bought by his friend, Honourable Minister Tino Machakaire. It is taboo in our culture to buy a coffin before you pass on,” Zodwa said. -Daily Sun

Red-Eyed ZANU PF Candidate Accuses Investor Of Funding Chamisa

AN aspiring Zanu PF Binga North Member of Parliament, Kudakwashe Munsaka, has allegedly threatened an International Anti-Poaching Foundation (IAPF) investor he accuses of funding the opposition party in the area.

It is alleged that the Binga Rural District Council (RDC) intervened and begged the investor to stay.

ZEC Moves 170,000 Voters

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) has been accused of illegally moving 170 000 voters from their original constituencies and wards in the voters roll to be used for the March 26 by-elections in a move which activists say could affect the credibility of the polls.

Priscilla Chigumba

Activists, Team Pachedu, which has been analysing the voters roll for the by-elections in comparison with the one used in the 2018 polls, expressed concern over the anomalies, saying Zec was illegally changing electoral boundaries without notifying voters as stipulated by the law, a move which critics say would disenfranchise voters.

Team Pachedu said a total of 170 867 addresses that were in the 2018 voters roll have been edited by Zec between 2018 and 2022, with Glen View South having the highest number of edited addresses (19 758), followed by Mangwe, Lupane East, Zaka East, Luveve, Kuwadzana and Chiredzi North.

“Zec has also moved many people from Glen View South constituency to Harare South constituency. The mass movement of voters across constituencies and wards when addresses have not changed implies that Zec is illegally changing electoral boundaries,” Team Pachedu said on Twitter.

“One typical illegal movement involves hundreds of voters from Zvimba East to Glen View South (Chirangano Car Park Tent).

“For multiple voters in Chitungwiza South constituency, Zec has changed their former 2018 wards, yet their residential addresses have not changed at all. Who did Zec inform before making these sweeping changes in wards as required by the law?

“After the 2018 elections, Zec created new polling stations and some of them are 6301HRE2807 C, Glen Norah (728 voters), 6301HRE3103 C, Glenview South (671 voters), 6301HRE3202 C, Glen View South (669 voters) and 5801KWE1402 C, Kwekwe Central (669) without informing anyone as required by the law.”

Chief elections officer, Utoile Silaigwana yesterday told NewsDay that citizens or organisations affected by the changes should approach Zec district offices.

“Can we see the claims because we haven’t received any complaints to date? You are very aware that the voter registration exercise is still underway, and so we can only have the correct information when it has been completed,” Silaigwana said.

On its official Twitter handle, Zec stated: “Polling stations are allocated according to proof of residence furnished by the voter. A voter has an option to transfer his/her registration to an area of preference provided they submit the requisite documents.”

Zimbabwe Election Support Network board chairperson Andrew Makoni said the trends were worrying as it could disenfranchise voters.

“Yes, it disfranchises voters as many will fail to vote because their wards have changed. Only Zec can provide the reasons why some voters may have been moved from one constituency to the other, and in this case from Glen View to Harare South as alleged.

“However, it is possible for a voter to change his ward or constituency if, for example, they migrate from one ward or constituency. In that case, it is the voter who approaches Zec seeking a transfer. Zec cannot do so on its own.”

Elections Resource Centre programmes manager Solomon Bobosibunu said: “We are in the process of analysing the voters roll and will shortly be able to comment on the alleged movement.

“On the overall, registered voters cannot be changed without their consent. There must be an explanation as to why those changes were effected without the knowledge of the voters. If these are true, they damage the credibility of the voters roll and ultimately the outcome of the election.”

Citizens Coalition for Change treasurer-general David Coltart said the anomalies in the voters roll were not surprising as it was clear that it was creating a pathway for rigging of elections.

He said there was need for Zec to be independent and free from the ruling Zanu PF party and military control such that it retains the ability to carry out its electoral mandate as a national body.

“I am not surprised. The reason Zanu PF was happy to have by-elections now was because it knows the results are easier to manipulate. Through its proxies in Zec, they can manipulate the voters roll to ‘import’ voters from constituencies which do not have an election to those which do,” Coltart said.

“On election day, it is easy to bus those voters in because there won’t be observers. So if discrepancies are found, it will be part of this grand scheme to subvert the will of the electorate in the coming by-elections.” -Newsday

Dealing With Sexual Exploitation

Tackling Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment

Sexual exploitation & abuse (SEA) of the communities we serve is a grave violation of WHO’s commitment to serve and protect the vulnerable.

Sexual harassment (SH) of our workforce is a serious failure of our duty of care. This is the sentiment of WHO’s leadership, staff and her Member States. But we all know and acknowledge that more could and should be done. And done quickly. The risks of SEA have increased significantly in recent years.

WHO is increasingly operational, being called on to operate to save lives and minimize death, disease and suffering in our health programmes and emergency response operations. Our work in countries of fragility, conflict and vulnerability increase the risk of exploitation.

We work with UN agencies and NGOs to address these risks jointly, and aim to meet the standards set by WHO’s own policies and Code of ethics and professional conduct as well as meet the requirements and expectations set by the UN system and IASC partners.

WHO is scaling up its efforts to do everything in its power to prevent and protect from SEAH. Everyone – staff, consultants, suppliers, partners – has an obligation to report any suspected events that may constitute SEAH.

Police Arrest ZIFA Boss

Suspended Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president Felton Kamambo and board member responsible for finance, Philemon Machana, have been arrested on various allegations.

Kamambo and Machana were on Saturday arrested by Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officers for fraud and contempt of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act, which was applied in their suspension on 16 November 2021.

The SRC suspended the Kamambo-led ZIFA last November on several allegations, chief among them the board’s failure to account for public funds.

The commission acted in accordance with section 30 of the SRC Act.

Kamambo, however, continued to issue statements in the capacity of ZIFA president and used the official ZIFA letterhead in all his correspondence.

It is further alleged that Kamambo fraudulently used public funds as well as changed ZIFA accounts while under suspension.

The suspended ZIFA board even went on to suspended members of the ZIFA secretariat and Premier Soccer League governors, moves which resulted in the SRC involving the police leading to the duo’s arrest.

Mahere Dismisses Mnangagwa Rhetoric

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said opposition political parties will never rule Zimbabwe.

Mnangagwa was addressing ZANU PF supporters who were gathered at Epworth High School grounds for the party’s by-election campaign rally on Saturday.

Mnangagwa claimed that some opposition leaders in Zimbabwe were telling their supporters that it is possible to unseat ZANU PF like what Hakainde Hichilema’s opposition party did in Zambia in 2021. He said:

Endai muudze veopposition kuti munhu arimuHarare akatanga kufamba kuenda kuChina netsoka anotanga kusvika opposition isati yapinda muState House.

Go and tell them that a person walking from Harare to China will arrive faster than opposition parties trying to get to State House in Harare. It’s not going to happen.

However, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere dismissed Mnangagwa’s comments saying only the people of Zimbabwe have the right to elect people of their choice.

Mnangagwa assured residents of Epworth and surrounding areas that his government is in the process of giving them title deeds. He said:

We sourced funds and gave them to Professor Murwira’s ministry to carry out a geospatial survey. We have completed the survey and will build flats.

We will move those who built on roads to the flats because we cannot move someone into the open.

Once you get hold of your title deed, you have security for your land. It becomes your inheritance.

This will ultimately do away with land barons. So we are in this process of regularising settlements as well as issuing title deeds.- VOA

Teachers are protesting at poor living conditions across the country.

They want their salaries to revert to the 2018 USD 540 mark.

Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration has suspended teachers for raising concerns about poor salaries.

Below is the Citizens Coalition For Change brief statement on intimidation of teachers by the regime.

“They should pay teachers what they are demanding.

They are expecting Govt to restore their salaries to the 2018 level where they were earning US$540.

The Minister of Finance always says the economy is improving.
So why are they unable to pay teachers.”

Citizens’ Coalition For Change is determined to end Zanu PF’s dominance in Mwenezi East Constituency in the coming by-election for the area.

Zanu PF’s dominance in Mwenezi emanates from intimidation, violence and coersive voting.

Citizens’ Coalition For Change said in a statement:
“This is Hon. Mandizvidza Tendekai 26 March 2022 by-elections Parliamentary Candidate for Mwenezi East Constitutency.”

ZIFA Bosses To Appear In Court On Monday

Suspended Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president Felton Kamambo and board member for finance Philimon Machana were yesterday arrested for fraud and defiance of the SRC Act.

The SRC suspended the Kamambo-led administration on November 16 last year, for several violations, chief among them failure to account for public funds.

After the suspension, Kamambo and company continued to issue statements using the ZIFA letter head to communicate with world governing body FIFA, in defiance of the SRC Act.

Kamambo was picked up by detectives at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport while making arrangements to travel to Qatar for a FIFA meeting while Machana was picked up at his home.

They are currently detained at Highlands Police Station and will appear in court tomorrow.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

“Mnangagwa In Panic Mode Due To President Chamisa Rising Popularity”

Understanding Sexual Exploitation

Econet Founder Strive Masiyiwa Leaving Facebook

By A Correspondent- Econet Wireless founder, Strive Masiyiwa has announced that he was leaving Facebook. In a Facebook post titled “Go to bed smarter each day,”

Masiyiwa said the countdown to the last days of the platform, where he has been sharing inspirational stories and business tips, had started.

He said:

As we’re on the countdown to the last days of the platform at the end of this month, I want to remind you of one of the most important lessons I’ve taught here since back in 2013 when we got started: The importance of #Reading.

We all read these days, more so than at any other time in history. The guy looking at his small phone following social media platforms actually reads a lot! He probably reads as much volume of writing as Warren Buffett! So don’t say things like: “I cannot read long things”.

In 2020, TechnoMag reported that the Zimbabwean-born telecoms mogul Strive Masiyiwa had overtaken Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to become the most influential businessman on Facebook.

According to the publication, Masiyiwa, who has close to 5 Million followers on the social site, is ranked higher in terms of his followership, his interactions and the growth of his engagement and reach.

In 2019, Masiyiwa and his wife, Tsitsi, quit Twitter and later suggested that some users of the microblogging site were posting fake news.

He said:

Econet Global which I own, decided to move shares into another company, which I also own. I own both companies 100%. It has nothing to do with the listed companies! Our accountants were simply doing some housekeeping.

There was no deal!

This is one of the reasons why I don’t use Twitter, because a lot of people rush to say things on it, without checking the facts. It is a place of “conspiracy theorists”, who are thrown from pillar to post.

In the current Facebook post, Masiyiwa also claimed that he does not have Instagram or WhatsApp accounts.

Investment in Radio-Key to Africa’s Connectivity

By John OMO-Secretary General of the African Telecommunications Union

12th February 2022

In a continent that grapples with limited ICT infrastructure and access to internet and digital technologies, radio remains the leading communication medium in Africa with the highest audience and the widest geographical coverage catering to roughly 800 million Africans that remain offline as outlined in a 2021 report by the International Telecommunication Union.

While modern technologies that compliment radio broadcast such as internet have been received with skepticism, radio, has over the years, predominantly emerged as a trusted and influential source of information in Africa. If radio is not competing with but complimenting these modern technologies, how can this powerful medium be used as a catalyst in Africa’s digital transformation?

The incorporation of technology into radio broadcast such as online/livestreaming services and the increased interaction between radio stations and their listeners through the use of mobile phones is a clear indication of the complimentary roles of the technologies. The role played by modern and emerging technologies in enhancing service delivery in the radio industry is just but one of the many benefits that such technologies can offer not only to the industry but to Africa as a continent and radio can be used to advocate for the uptake and adoption of these technologies.

Throughout history, radio has done tremendously well in influencing positive behavior change among communities in Africa sparking socio-economic development. The rise of community radios for instance, have played a key role in conveying vital information and raising the awareness and understanding of these communities on important issues such as health, peace, civil rights, human rights, education, agricultural best practices, and financial growth and empowerment.

Arguably, it can be said that Africa’s digital transformation is not dependent on the attitude of some Africans towards ICTs but on the availability of ICT resources and infrastructure. Acknowledging that investment in ICT that currently stand to a tune of US$100 billion is one of the key solutions in dealing with the digital divide in the continent,

it is also important for Africa to prepare its population for the digital transformation. Radio can play a key role in educating the masses on the importance of ICTs and technologies and advocating for the increased use and uptake of ICTs

Internet safety and cyber security is one of the key areas that radio can play a role in promoting ICT adoption and usage.  Online security threats can discourage individuals including children from fully exploiting the benefits of the internet.

he radio can play a key role in educating the society on online safety by drawing messages from existing laws. Through the radio, the community can be educated on how to identify and report online and ICT-facilitated crimes including those committed against women and children.

The internet can be used for personal and consequently societal development. Daily, new opportunities for education, career development and endless commercial activities are availed across the internet yet a majority of mobile device users in in Sub-Saharan Africa mainly use their devices for social and entertainment purposes than for information-seeking or career- and commerce-related activities.

This is according to the Spring 2017 Global Attitudes Survey conducted by PEW Research Centre. Radio can also be used to encourage the masses to fully exploit ICTs including their mobile phones to access such opportunities and develop knowledge and skills that can positively impact themselves and the society.

Additionally, radio can also be used to encourage and challenge small business and farmers to explore online markets and resources. Many new and innovative digital platforms and services are now available for small businesses and farmers to use.

Technology can help these very important groups in our community improve their growth and productivity and increase their market share by accessing new customers.  With these tools being introduced at a rapid pace, there is a dire need for them to be educated on how to take advantage of such opportunities and thrive in an everchanging digital environment.

When it comes to ICTs and digital technologies, content is the driver for the demand side of infrastructure. Africa as a continent should promote the production of local content and applications and radio can be used to encourage local content development as well as promote the digital content sector.

As the world celebrates the 2022 World Radio Day under the theme “Radio and Trust”, stakeholders should challenge themselves on how they can use this powerful medium to influence Africa’s digital transformation. The sooner our population appreciates the benefits of digital technologies, the faster the adoption will be even as the continent works towards closing the digital divide.

Greatman, TEO Clash Over Wedding Cash

By A Correspondent- A dispute has emerged between Greatman (Tongai Gwaze) a Zimbabwean musician and TEO Events over the former’s failure to pay US$2 500 for services provided at his wedding.

Greatman wedded Silibaziso Masara barely two weeks ago at an event that was dubbed the wedding of the year.

The musician accuses TEO Events of dishonesty in handling donated funds and goods.

Speaking during an interview with the Sunday Mail, Greatman claims TEO Events completely took over the event and monopolized everything.

He said:

They monopolized everything! TEO directed all cash donations to their bank accounts and mobile numbers for mobile money transfers. Goods were received on our behalf. We got nothing.

What is surprising though is that there are service providers that are yet to be paid. I am said to be in arrears of more than US$2 500. However, I know cash donations that came through on the day and before could have easily settled the debts.

TEO has failed to provide a financial statement or receipts showing how funds were used. Up to now, I don’t even know how much money we got from various people, including pledges and goods. We have been kept in the dark.

Meanwhile, Matthew Mhembere of TEO Events said Greatman and his family were being ungrateful. He argued that it was not his responsibility to meet their debts.

He said:

They now want to ask how much money we got from donations and pledges, yet they don’t even care about the expenses I incurred in making the event a success. Besides, it is not my responsibility to meet their debts.

Mhembere said he doesn’t know what else they want from him since he settled all the wedding costs that came under him. He added that he doesn’t want to talk to Greatman and his family again.-State media

Gwanda Villagers Chase Away Mopane Worm Harvesters

By A Correspondent- Villagers from the Dombo area in Gwanda District are driving out mopane worm harvesters from their areas saying they are depleting their wealth.

Traditionally, mopane worms (amacimbi/madora) are harvested for subsistence by rural communities but over the past decade, they have increasingly become a commercial commodity.

For communities in Matabeleland South province particularly, mopane worms have become a reliable source of livelihood and nutrition.

Mopane worms are processed and sold to local urban markets but the market has also extended to South Africa, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo and Europe. The contribution of mopane worms to people’s livelihoods has become so significant that outbreaks of the worms create seasonal employment for locals.

Headman Oahile Marupi said mopane worm harvesters from other areas were finishing their worms while also threatening villagers with violence.

“They’re stealing our worms while others threaten villagers with machetes. We’re also having challenges with deforestation.

People from other areas who come to harvest mopane worms from our village are cutting down trees haphazardly. There is no longer conservation of our forests,” said Headman Marupi.

Mopane worm traders and harvesters put up tents and shacks in the forest which become their temporary homes while they are collecting mopane worms.

Mopane worms have also become a source of barter trade for these camp occupants where they give out the mopane worms in exchange for clothes and foodstuffs among other things. It is estimated that in a good season, over 500 tonnes of mopane worms are collected throughout the province with an estimated value of up to US$1 000 000.

Meanwhile, the Gwanda Rural District Council (RDC) is awaiting approval of draft by-laws aimed at commercialising the harvesting of mopane worms in the area, which would help generate revenue for the local authority.

Gwanda RDC says it has since drafted by-laws that will introduce licences to individuals intending to harvest amacimbi under areas of its jurisdiction as a way of monetising the resource.

The local authority’s natural resources officer, Mr Sijabuliso Masango, said they were hopeful that the by-laws will be approved by the Central Government.

“As the local authority we drafted by-laws for the harvesting of amacimbi and we are awaiting approval from the high office,” he said.

Mr Masango said this will ensure the council collects revenue from harvesters who would have to pay for permits at about US$20 per year.

“This will go a long way in boosting our revenue and also it will help in our service delivery,” said Mr Masango.

CCC Activist Netsai Marova Requests Virtual Court Trial

By A Correspondent- Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) activist Netsai Marova, who is believed to have skipped the border, has requested Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi to set up a virtual court trial after a Harare magistrate issued an arrest warrant for her.

Marova is jointly charged with two other CCC activists Joanna Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbiri for allegedly faking their abductions in 2020.

The trio was initially arrested for protesting what they saw as the authorities’ failure to provide social protection during COVID-19 lockdowns in Zimbabwe.

They were later arrested for faking their abductions.

Marova said she was not on the run, but wanted a virtual trial to clear her name while pursuing her academic studies.

“Firstly, it should be known that I did not abscond any court. Despite charges being levelled against me, the fabric of my social life must still be maintained. The oppressive bail conditions were making it difficult and all attempts to have them relaxed to enable me to proceed with my academic pursuits failed,” Marova told NewsDay Weekender from her undisclosed hideout.

“The trial against me can still proceed as the law allows virtual court sittings and indeed Minister Ziyambi alludes to these. If he is sincere, he could arrange for these virtual sittings in my case and I will gladly attend.

“On completion of my studies, I am determined to return home and have my name cleared and continue with my life. Regrettably, the conditions imposed by the State made it impossible for me to continue with my life while answering to their malicious charges at the same time.”

Ziyambi, while presenting a statement during a United Nations Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review in Geneva recently, accused Marova and her co-accused of faking their disappearance to tarnish the image of government.

But Marova said: “Their express denials of the enforced disappearances and their bid to accuse me of false abduction is, in fact, one of the key features that constitute the crime of enforced disappearance.”-newsday

Civil Servants Receive Suspension Notices

By A Correspondent- Civil servants have pleaded with their employer to reverse the suspension of striking teachers, who started receiving their suspension notices yesterday, as workers’ unions pressed for more demands to the Government.

The Zimbabwe Teachers Association (Zimta) confirmed that its members have started receiving suspension letters as earlier stated by the Government.

“Zimta has started receiving suspension letters, which have been handed down to its members and, as earlier on advised, all efforts are being and will be made to protect the interests of our members,” Zimta president Mr Richard Gundani said in a statement yesterday.

He said their executive will meet today to map a way forward.

This comes as the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC), which comprises Government and civil servants’ representative body, the Apex Council met in Harare yesterday to deliberate further on the Treasury offer on conditions of service for public sector workers.

The Treasury this week announced a 20 percent salary increase for all civil servants plus an additional US$100 cash allowance, as well as school fees allowance among other non-monetary benefits.

While civil servants are agreeable to most of conditions of service, some teachers have remained on strike.

The Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions (ZCPSTU) said in the NJNC meeting civil servants tabled their desire for the US$100 allowance to separate from their local dollar earnings and that the 20 percent increase be calculated from gross salary paid.

Below are some of the resolutions:

“A 20 percent review on gross emoluments (basic salary + transport allowance + housing allowance + representation where applicable) backdated to 1 January 2022 and to be paid on February 2022 pay date.

“Introduction of US$100 salary to be paid in hard currency across the board with effect from 1 March 2022. This is up and above the ZWL$ salary and continuation of payment of US$75 Covid-19 Allowance for civil servants, payable in hard currency with effect from 1 January 2022. This brings the total USD monthly pay component to US$175,” read the statement.

On non-monetary incentives, the Treasury had said that teachers will benefit from payment of school fees by Government for up to three biological children per teaching family with an upper limit of $20 000 per child per term to be paid directly to the school.

However, Civil Servants suggested this benefit should cut across board.

According to the statement, civil servants have requested Government to reverse the suspension of teachers that failed to report to work on the opening day on Monday.

They also implored the employer to bring back the effective date of implementation of the US$100 package pay date from the 1st of March to 1 January 2022 as well as extend the school fees benefit to the rest of civil service.

“However, the agreement could not be signed due to a sticking issue regarding the Government’s intention to suspend teachers who failed to report for duty due to incapacitation,” reads the statement.-statemedia

Madhongi Lures Women For Bush S_ex, Robs Them

By A Correspondent- Five women from Mutoko are counting their losses after being lured to bush sex by Simbai Chikowe popularly known as Madhongi who in turn stole their cellphones and money.

The matter came to light at Mutoko magistrates  courts  on Friday where Chikowe appeared before magistrate Elijah  Sibanda.

Prosecutor Nathan Mujuru alleges from August last year to January  this year Madhongi would wait for women in bank ques or Mukuru outlets and lure them for a bush sex before stealing their handbags where he would get cell phones and money.

Police received several reports and arrested Madhongi at his house in Chinzanga area where the mobile phones were recovered.

The matter continues  on February 14 after the suspect requested for a legal representation.

Village Head Hauled To Court Over Pfumvudza

By A Correspondent- A 47 year old Mudzi village head Fira Chizisano of Chisizano village was arraigned before Mutoko magistrates  courts yesterday for forging signitures and unfair distribution of agricultural  inputs (pfumvudza).

Chizivano was lucky to escape jail after he was cleared of his charges by Mutoko magistrate Elijah Sibanda.

The state led by Nathan Mujuru alleged from a period not extendig December last year to February this year the village head was handed over agricultural  inputs under Pfumvunza government scheme to distribute  them to the villagers, instead he converted them for his own use and forged signatures  of receipts.

The magistrate  dismissed the case saying the Criminal  Investigating Department (CID) failed to properly investigate the case and bring overwhelming evidence.

“This matter was not properly investigated since there is no overwhelming  evidence to the charges levelled against the accused therfore the accused has been found not guilty and accquitted,” the magistrate  ruled.

“Electorate Is Not Naive”: Mliswa Tells Mwonzora

By A Correspondent- Norton legislator, Temba Mliswa has said MDC-T leader, Senator Douglas Mwonzora, has a huge task ahead of the 26 March by-elections amid reports that a small crowd attended his rally on Saturday.

MDC-T which is contesting in the by-elections as MDC Alliance was officially launching its campaign ahead of the polls.

The Standard reports that an estimated 300 people turned up for the rally, but a statement issued by the party claimed 5000 attended.

The rally in Harare’s Highfield yesterday was being hyped as the stage to demonstrate that Mwonzora was the leading opposition figure in Zimbabwe.

It was billed to start at 10 am, but the party leader only arrived at the venue in the high-density suburb around 3:30 pm amid speculation that he delayed his arrival hoping that there would be an improvement in attendance.

Mliswa said the small crowd showed that Mwonzora faced an uphill struggle as he tries to outsmart Nelson Chamisa-led Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) and Zanu PF. He said:

For Mwonzora today should be a reminder that he has work to do.

As I have always argued, the electorate isn’t obtuse or naive.

It knows what it wants and he has the onerous task to make people believe that he can be a genuine opposition leader.

Meanwhile, Mwonzora told ZBC that he was excited by the turnout and expressed shock over the images on social media showing a small crowd. He said:

I was shocked the social media was circulating pictures without people, but now we can see for ourselves 5 000 plus.

Besides the ruling party, no other party can have such numbers without being forced or enticed by money.

After having a leadership clean-out, we are now having leaders who follow the party ideology and out of 12 seats we expect a minimum of eight.

At yesterday’s rally, most of the people were wearing red t-shirts emblazoned with the late Morgan Tsvangirai portraits with only a few wearing Mwonzora’s white branded t-shirts.

In his address, Mwonzora urged the electorate not to vote for people that were “recalled from office because of incompetence.”

Zanu PF;s Nkayi South MP Says She Built 3 Schools. Is She Telling The Truth?

By A Correspondent- Nkayi South villagers have questioned claims by their ZANU PF legislator Stars Mathe that she has built three schools using ZW$2 million disbursed under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Mathe, who became MP for the constituency in 2018, told Khulumani FM radio that she had initiated various infrastructure projects since getting into office, including constructing three schools.

She said:

When we started getting the CDF, we looked at the shortage of schools in Nkayi South as children walk  long distances of up to 30 kilometres.

I then ‘planted’ three new secondary schools starting with Gonye Secondary School, which is now at roofing stage.

We then went to build Sagonda secondary school.

I had to cut down trees in the virgin land and build Sagonda.

We also went to Gwamba valley and built one school in the bush after talking to the Forestry Commission and we constructed Dabe Secondary School to cater for the area.

However, in their virtual Nkayi Community Parliament, villagers said the $2 million mentioned by Mathe was not even enough to build a classroom block, let alone three schools.

They said  ZW$2 million can only purchase roofing, but not enough to also cover transport costs to Nkayi.

Mathe previously attracted the anger of villagers after accusing them of not being grateful for the ongoing Bulawayo-Nkayi road rehabilitation programme.

The road has been in a poor state for decades. -standard

VP Chiwenga Hauled To Court

By A Correspondent- A human rights activist has dragged Vice President Constantino Chiwenga to the High Court seeking an order directing him to table before Parliament a National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) 2020 report and its recommendations.

In his court application, Dzikamai Bere cited Chiwenga as the third respondent in his official capacity as the responsible official assigned to oversee peace and reconciliation.

Bere who is also the executive director of the Zimbabwe Association for Human Rights (ZimRights), cited the NPRC and NPRC chairperson Sello Nare as the first and second respondents respectively.

The NPRC was established under sections 251 to 253 of the 2013 constitution to address past human rights abuses including Gukurahundi.

In his application, Bere, who is represented by Darlington Marange of the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum said:

Despite the clear provisions of the constitution and the Act, the respondents failed or neglected to submit or publish that annual report for the year 2020 and we are already approaching the deadline for the submission of an annual report of 2021 in March 2022…

With this approach I have a real fear that the annual report for the year 2020, which will be due in  March 2022 will not be submitted on time and it is competent in these circumstances, to issue a court order to compel the respondents to also comply with their reporting obligations for the annual report for the year 2021.

Bere argued that failure to submit the reports makes it difficult for Parliament to hold the NPRC accountable.

In terms of section 16 (5) of the NPRC Act, the minister responsible is required to table this report before Parliament within 10  days of the next sitting of that Parliament.

Under the same Act, the minister is mandated to table the recommendations within 6 months after submitting the same report to Parliament.

Chiwenga Dragged To The Courts

By-Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has been dragged to the High Court seeking a human rights activist for reluctantly delaying to table before Parliament a National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) 2020 report and its recommendations.

In his court application, Dzikamai Bere who is also the executive director of the Zimbabwe Association for Human Rights (ZimRights) cited Chiwenga as the third respondent in his official capacity as the responsible official assigned to oversee peace and reconciliation.

The NPRC and NPRC chairperson Sello Nare are cited as the first and second respondents respectively.

The NPRC was established under section 251 to 253 of the 2013 constitution to address past human rights abuses including Gukurahundi.

In his application, Bere, who is represented by Darlington Marange of the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum said Chiwenga and the NPRC were constitutionally mandated to table the commissions’ annual reports and recommendations in Parliament.

In terms of section 16 (5) of the NPRC Act, the minister responsible is required to table this report before Parliament within 10 days of the next sitting of that Parliament.

Under the same Act, the minister is mandated to table the recommendations within 6 months after submitting the same report to Parliament.

“Despite the clear provisions of the constitution and the Act, the respondents failed or neglected to submit or publish that annual report for the year 2020 and we are already approaching the deadline for the submission of an annual report of 2021 in March 2022,” Bere submitted.]

“I am perturbed by the conduct of the respondents, they have exhibited a lackadaisical approach in meeting these constitutional and statutory obligations.

“With this approach I have a real fear that the annual report for the year 2020, which will be due in March 2022 will not be submitted on time and it is competent in these circumstances, to issue a court order to compel the respondents to also comply with their reporting obligations for the annual report for the year 2021.”

Bere argued that failure to submit the reports makes it difficult to hold the NPRC accountable.

“Without submitting that report to Parliament, the latter is deprived of an opportunity to hold this commission accountable,” he said.

“It also deprives me of information that is essential to hold this Commission and the executive accountable.”

The NPRC lost seven years of its 10 year lifespan as it was not operational from 2013 as expected after the promulgation of the constitution due to lack of an enabling Act to operationalise it.

In February 2019, MDC Alliance proportional representation legislator Concillia Chinanzvavana had to take President Emmerson Mnangagwa to the Masvingo High Court seeking a ruling forcing him to extend the tenure of the NPRC by 10 years from 2018 when it was sworn in as prescribed by the constitution.

Justice Joseph Mafusire ruled in her favour meaning the NPRC will be operational until 2028, but to date, its lifespan has not been extended and is set to expire in 2023.

Gwanda Man Murdered, Body Found Parts Missing

By- Residents of Gwanda were left in shock after a man was allegedly lured to five men who beat him up and stabbed him to death.

After committing the spine-chilling act, they dumped his body in a thicket.
The body of Thembani Moyo (26) was found on 3 February, five days after he was last seen, with family members noting that his eyes and privates parts were missing in a suspected ritual murder.
Moyo was buried last Wednesday at an emotionally charged funeral where family members narrated that although police indicated investigations were still on going, they suspected that the murder was linked to rituals.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the murder although she did not confirm that the body was found with some parts missing.

“Deceased Thembani Moyo aged 26 of Spitzkop, Gwanda was last seen on 26 January 2022 at around 5pm at Mbembesi B/C, West Nicholson. On the 3rd of February 2022 information was received to the effect that Thembani Moyo was murdered. The CID started investigations leading to the arrest of two suspects who were remanded in custody pending investigations.
“The two suspects led the detectives to the scene of the crime where the body of the deceased was found in an advanced state of decomposition.
As police we are appealing to the public to assist police with information that may lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects. We are also urging the public not to resort to violence when solving their disputes, but to involve third parties so as to resolve their issues amicably,” said Insp Mangena.
Family members, however, said Thembani was approached by Munyaradzi Masocha (28) who asked him to help him recover his car which had a breakdown near West Nicholson.

They said the two went with another car with the intention of recovering Masocha’s car at Masase Business Centre. When they reached the scene, five men allegedly approached them and grabbed Thembani before speeding off towards Beitbridge.
The family members said after some time, they branched off the main road where the kidnappers assaulted Thembani, resulting in his death.
The family members said what surprised them was that Masocha did not report the matter to the police and only opened up after Thembani’s father approached him asking him where his son was since he was the last person to be seen with him.
Part of the version of the story was corroborated when two suspects in the murder case appeared before Gwanda magistrate Mrs Polite Dube-Banda facing a charge of murder last week. The two – Bruce Decent Nyoni (19) and Keith Ndlovu (21) – were remanded in custody to 22 February to allow for further investigations.
Prosecuting, Ms Zanele Sithole said on the day of the incident, Thembani was in the company of Masocha (28) who lured him through a piece job at Mbembesi Business Centre in West Nicholson. Nyoni and Ndlovu, in the company of three other men who are still on the run approached Thembani, manhandled and dragged him into an Altezza motor vehicle registration number ADK 6838 which they were driving.
They sped off going south along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge highway, and upon arrival at the 170km peg, they turned east and parked 70 metres from the highway.

The five proceeded to take turns to assault Thembani all over the body using switches and booted feet after which they took turns to stab him with an Okapi knife, leading to his death.
The accused then hid the body in the thicket and disappeared from the scene.

Harare Rejects Mwonzora

By- MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora on Saturtday got a rude awakening when a paltry crowd attended his party’s official launch of its campaign ahead of the March 26 by-elections.

An estimated 300 people turned up for the rally, but a statement issued by the party claimed 5000 attended.

Mwonzora’s party is contesting the polls under the MDC Alliance banner after side-lining Zimbabwe’s mainstream opposition party led by Nelson Chamisa under controversial circumstances.

Chamisa’s formation last month dumped the MDC name and is now known as the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).

The rally in Harare’s Highfield yesterday was being hyped as the stage to demonstrate that Mwonzora was the leading opposition figure in Zimbabwe.
It was billed to start at 10am, but the party leader only arrived at the venue in the high-density suburb around 3:30pm as there were only a handful of people.
It was speculated that he delayed his arrival because he was hoping that there would be an improvement in attendance.
Independent Norton legislator Temba Mliswa said the small crowd showed that Mwonzora faced an uphill struggle as he tries to outmanoeuvre Chamisa’s CCC and Zanu PF.
“For Mwonzora today should be a reminder that he has work to do,” Mliswa said on Twitter.
“As I have always argued, the electorate isn’t obtuse or naive.
“It knows what it wants and he has the onerous task to make people believe that he can be a genuine opposition leader.”
Mwonzora told ZBC that he was shocked by images on social media showing a paltry crowd.
He believes that over 5 000 people attended the rally.
“I’m very excited by the turnout,” Mwonzora was quoted saying.
“I was shocked the social media was circulating pictures without people, but now we can see for ourselves 5 000 plus.
“Besides the ruling party, no other party can have such numbers without being forced or enticed by money.
“After having a leadership clean-out, we are now having leaders who follow the party ideology and out of 12 seats we expect a minimum of eight.”
Most of the seats fell vacant when Mwonzora recalled MDC Alliance legislators after accusing them of joining a rival party.
His party failed to field candidates in three of the constituencies that would be up for grabs on March 26.
At yesterday’s rally, most of the people were clad in red t-shirts emblazoned with the late Morgan Tsvangirai portraits with only a few wearing Mwonzora’s white branded t-shirts.
A high quality PA system churned out Paul Madzore’s songs at the rally.
Madzore is a member of Chamisa’s CCC. There was a scuffle at the end of the rally as some people demanded refunds for transport fares, which could be an indication that they were from other suburbs of Harare.
In his address, Mwonzora reserved his venom for Chamisa and CCC, accusing them of adopting an Islamist terrorist group slogan.
The claim has already been dismissed as false after it was first made by the state-controlled media.
“There are people whom we recalled from office because of incompetence and they are pleading to be returned again,” he said.
“You should vote for someone who has outwitted both (President Emmerson) Mnangagwa and Chamisa.
“That person is me. There is no other party that is going to use our party symbols and colours. The MDC party is ours.”
Mwonzora is accused of doing Zanu PF’s bidding, but he denies the claims. Standard

Mnangagwa in Mugabe Anti-Opposition Rants

By- Zanu PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said opposition political parties will never rule Zimbabwe.

Mnangagwa addressed Zanu PF supporters gathered at Epworth High School grounds for the party’s by-election campaign rally on Saturday.

So we are in this process of regularising settlements as well as issuing title deeds.

Eddie Pfugari’s Daughter Granted ZWL$50k Bail

Late property tycoon Eddie Pfugari’s daughter Naume Makumbe (54) was on Friday granted ZWL$50 000 bail by Harare Magistrate Yeukai Dzuda following her arrest on charges of fraud.

Makumbe was arrested at the instigation of her step brother Edward Nyanyiwa who accused her of fabricating her mother’s marriage certificate.

When Makumbe was brought before the court, the state shockingly opposed bail on the grounds that the case involved a lot of money and that they had struggled to arrest her, but Magistrate Dzuda was unconvinced as she said the complainant had no power to question a marriage certificate which their late father did not have issues against.

Eddies Pfugari’s children are embroiled in a bitter battle for the ownership of their late father’s estate amid claims that Edward Nyanyiwa who was born out of wedlock while the late businessman was in South Africa is elbowing out the rest of the children out of the empire.

It is further alleged that Edward Nyanyiwa who connected with his father at the age of 39 is also alleged to be using the police and courts to silence his brothers and sisters while he continues to solely enjoy the fruits of Eddies Pfugari empire.

The late Eddies Pfugari whose real name was Edward Nyanyiwa had a polygamous marriage and had five wives including Mildred Nyanyiwa who is Makumbe’s late mother.

In March 1980, Eddie Pfugari registered Eddie Pfugari Pvt Limited with the accused’s mother and they were both directors.

Edward Nyanyiwa’s dispute with his step brothers and sisters started when Mildred Nyanyiwa died and her biological children wanted to register her estate with the Master of High Court.

Edward Nyanyiwa violently opposed to the execution of the estate claiming that she did not have a stake in Eddie Pfugari Private Limited.

The dispute escalated when Makumbe produced a marriage certificate proving Mildred Nyanyiwa’s marriage to Eddie Pfugari and this did not sit well with Edward Nyanyiwa who then accused her of fabricating the document before reporting her to the police for fraud.

Biti Savages RBZ Governor

Former finance minister Tendai Biti has described the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor as a fool, saying his monetary policies are insufficient to tame inflation.

Biti said this in a scathing attack on Mangudya’s ‘shallow’ monetary policy statement issued Monday during an interview at New Zim TV’s premier weekly show, The Agenda.

Mangudya, in the monetary policy statement, claimed he was doing enough to bring the country’s inflation rate to 35% by year end.But Biti dismissed those claims saying if anything, inflation will keep rocketing.

He predicted that at the rate at which inflation is hitting the economy, the exchange rate will by December hit a high of US$1: ZW$1 000.

Biti said President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his administration were practising feja feja economics, a slang for uncoordinated and disorderly financial management.

He also invented the word ginyanomics to describe the sort of economics practised by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government.

Biti also lay into Finance and Economic Development minister Mthuli Ncube’s decision to maintain the Zimbabwe Dollar as the country’s main currency at a time it is steadily losing value and fuelling inflation.”My suspicion is that the exchange rate will by August stand at US$1 to ZW$400, which is a lot of depreciation,” Biti said.

“Very soon the parallel rate will be at US$1 to ZW$500 but they are afraid of that especially in a year before elections, so what they are doing is squeezing the tap for the RTGS dollar by withdrawal limits and closely monitoring corporates’ current accounts to ensure there is no movements to fuel Fourth Street (illegal exchange rate market).

To be very crude by end of year we will be very close to US$1 to ZW$1000, it is back to 2008.”The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) vice president said Mangudya’s MPS was based on Ncube’s flawed assertions that the country was on the mend yet by pointing to local currency indices that did not reflect on the ordinary citizen.”

The elephant in the living room is the dual economy that Zimbabwe has, Mthuli is pretending to administer a certain economy, prescribe solutions to a certain economy but the rest of us are in another reality, his is a reality distoted field, a false field,” said Biti.

“There is a US dollar economy where most of us live in, where shops will not accept anything other than the US dollar, where school fees is paid in US dollars, where fuel is paid for in US dollars, where rentals are in US dollars, where houses are sold in US and that is the bulk of the economy.

Mangudya and Ncube are in this artificial world of this Zimbabwe dollar economy so when he pronounces the monetary policy he is pronouncing it for this small non-existent economy which is controlled by cartels,” he said.”

Those who are saying inflation has gone down need to be asked the economy they are measuring, will they be measuring the cash US dollar economy or the artificial, false non-existent Zim dollar economy. It is a cantankerous economy, someone once called it a casino economy but there are rules in a casino…this is a sewer, in a sewer you cannot measure the extent of the stench, you cannot measure the extent of the flow.

It is a dog’s breakfast but one which many dogs will not touch by a long mile.”Ncube scrapped use of the US dollar as the country’s main currency in 2018, reintroducing the Zimbabwe dollar against advice from economic experts including Biti. They highlighted the lack of fundamentals that support a local currency and predicted it would lose value.

Biti suggested Ncube should abolish the foreign currency exchange floor and avert an impending disaster akin to the 2008 crisis by dollarising.”Dollarise but retain the Zimbabwe dollar, abolish the auction floor so it finds its natural mark in the market.

They dedollarised when the fundamentals were not in place. There is no country that involuntarily dollarised which has been able to dedollarise because it is a confidence thing…what you can do is you dollarise, bring your currency so it serves as change, as a transactional instrument not as a storer of value, value continues being kept by the hard currency. If Mangudya thinks he can do it, then he is a fool,” he said.

“It is a confidence thing, we do not have confidence in Mnangagwa and that man with a high propensity to lie Ncube.”

Biti suggested a return to what he termed the “We eat what we kill” principle of strict cash budgeting if Zinbabwe was to get back on its feet.

He also argued Zimbabwe has enough US dollar reserves to use the currency as its main tender, highliting that government had also resigned to charging services in the American dollar.

“I always argue Ginyanomics do not work…there will be an implosion. Every tax is now in US dollars, even number plates are in US dollars, passports are in US dollars, so they are completely dishonest people, they are completely mendacious people, they are necrophilia, it is a disaster.”

Biti told New Zim TV Ncube had no surplus to talk about as it was being calculated in the local currency while parliament had gone on to assume a ZW$3,4 billion debt from the central bank despite the surplus.

Biti was finance minister during the Government of National Unity (GNU) between 2009 and 2013.

Plumtree Man Arrested For Raping, Impregnating Brother’s Daughter

A man from Plumtree in Matabeleland South province has been arrested after he sneaked into his brother’s daughter’s bedroom and raped her before dozing off.

The matter came to light when the teenager girl got pregnant.

The man (32) appeared before Plumtree regional magistrate Mrs Sithembiso Ndebele who found him guilty but the matter was postponed for sentencing.

Prosecuting, Mr Willbrought Kennedy Muleya told the court that sometime in October last year, at around 10pm, the man from Tshemahali Village under Chief Masendu, Madlambuzi sneaked into the girl’s bedroom hut where she was sleeping with her younger sister.

At first he offered the girl R50 so that he could sleep with her but she refused and ordered him to get out of the blankets and house.

The court heard that however, the man refused to go out and pretended to be asleep.

When he discovered that the teenager and her sister had fallen asleep, he raped the girl without protection.

The court heard that afterwards he dozed off and only woke up the next morning. The girl narrated what happened to her grandmother (accused’s mother) the next morning but she also did not report the case to police or anyone.

The court heard that on 21 December 2021, police in Madlambuzi received a tip-off from an official from Social Welfare to the effect that the 16-year-old girl was sexually abused by her uncle and the investigation began but unfortunately they failed to locate the girl until on 4 January when they found her pregnant.

She told the police what had happened leading to the arrest of the uncle.

Drunk With Power Mnangagwa Dares Opposition

By A Correspondent| President Emmerson Mnangagwa has in a ‘Smith like’ declaration dared the opposition saying they will never set foot at the State House.

This is despite increased pressure for change of hands in government due to the worsening economic situation.

Addressing Epworth residents yesterday to launch his party’s by-elections campaign, Mnangagwa said if someone is to embark on a walk to China, the person will arrive first before the opposition gets into power.

“Endai muudze veopposition kuti munhu arimuHarare akatanga kufamba kuenda kuChina netsoka anotanga kusvika opposition isati yapinda muState House,” said Mnangagwa.

Ian Smith, the former President of Rhodesia in 1976, declared that there would be no majority rule, “not in a thousand years,” in Rhodesia.

It only took four if not three years for Smith to lose government power as Zimbabwe gained independence.

Has Mnangagwa become Ian Smith?

Biti Exposes Zanu PF Looting Spree

Tinashe Sambiri|Addressing curious residents at Nhari Business Centre on Friday, Citizens’ Coalition For Change vice president Hon Tendai Biti blasted the Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa for stealing State resources at a shocking rate.

Hon Biti also took a swipe at the Zanu PF regime for allowing Chinese investors to seize land belonging to hapless villagers.

Hon Biti accused Mr Mnangagwa and Kuda Tagwirei of running the country like a tuckshop.

Greatman Hit With USD2500 Bill Over Wedding

The singer, Greatman Gwaze has been hit with a bombshell bill totalling USD2500 from his recently held wedding expenses.

The development has triggered a war of words between the man and the event organiser, TEO.

“TEO has failed to provide a financial statement or receipts showing how funds were used. Up to now, I don’t even know how much money we got from various people, including pledges and goods. We have been kept in the dark,” fumed Greatman.

But TEO Events, which was responsible for sourcing funds for the wedding and putting all logistics in place, denied the allegations. The events company is famed for organising Sinikiwe Kademaunga and Reuben Zhivha’s wedding party that went viral online.

Greatman said he started suspecting that something was not right a few days before the wedding after TEO Events “completely” took over the event.

“They monopolised everything! TEO directed all cash donations to their bank accounts and mobile number(s) for mobile money transfers. Goods were received on our behalf. We got nothing.

“What is surprising though is that there are service providers that are yet to be paid. I am said to be in arrears of more than US$2 500. However, I know cash donations that came through on the day and before could have easily settled the debts.”

Family spokesperson Mr Clever Gwaze, better known as Baba Billy, was equally furious.

“I am not happy with the way this wedding was handled. TEO Events stole from us. They took over everything and made us mere spectators of our event. Relatives from both the groom and bride side were left with little or no space to manoeuvre,” complained Baba Billy.

However, Matthew Mhembere of TEO Events is not taking the accusations lightly.

He instead considers Greatman and his family ungrateful.

“They now want to ask how much money we got from donations and pledges, yet they don’t even care about the expenses I incurred in making the event a success. Besides, it is not my responsibility to meet their debts.

“They were all there when I paid all the wedding costs that came under me. What else do they want? Anyway, I don’t want to talk to them anymore. I have since blocked their numbers. I don’t wish to talk about this subject anymore,” said Mhembere.-state media

Facts About Sexual Harassment

Caps United Ready For League Action

CAPS United head coach Lloyd ‘Lodza’ Chitembwe believes his charges are ready for the resumption of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season despite the problems the club has faced of late.

The Green Machine has been rocked by financial problems which have seen players boycotting training on numerous occasions demanding outstanding salaries.

The situation has seen Makekepepe losing players, notably Brandon Mpofu, who moved to cross town rivals Dynamos.

Chitembwe however reckons that his troops, who take on Black Rhinos at Sakubva on Sunday, are ready for top-flight resumption.

“CAPS are an ambitious club whose bar is set high, therefore, we sign players based on profiles fitting the club’s requirements. As it is a big club, we also require big players like the recently-contracted players such as Chinyengetere, Chafa, Dauda and Manondo. In short, we are ready for the season,” he was quoted as saying by NewsDay.

The Harare giants have strengthened their squad with acquisition of the veteran trio of midfielder Devon Chafa and striker Rodrick Chinyengetere.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Zanu Pf Promises Peace In Upcoming Polls

By A Correspondent- As the long awaited March 26, 2022 by-elections draw near, Zanu-PF claims that there will be peace in the run up to the elections despite the party being ‘historically known to employ violence’ during polls.

Acting President Constantino Chiwenga who was guest of honor at this year’s World Wetlands Day celebrations at Njovo in Zezai village in Masvingo Central declared that peace will reign before the elections before accusing opposition parties of resorting to violence during campaigns.

“Those who think a country can be built by foreigners or opposition parties use violence thinking that outsiders will come and rescue them. We do not want to hear that. All campaigns in the country should be peaceful up until March 26, 2022, but we are going to win the elections in all the seats and build a Zimbabwe we all want,” said Chiwenga.

However, Chiwenga briefly turned the commemorations into a mini-rally before claiming victory for Zanu-PF ahead of by-elections.

“In all districts which are being contested by oppositions who calls themselves ‘Chete-chete’, we are going to do something which has never happened before.

“Unogoita chete-chete pakuitasei ndiwe wega urimunyika here? (How can it be only you as if you are the only person in this world)? There is no such thing. We want to build a Zimbabwe we all want,” said Chiwenga.

Masvingo province will have nine by-elections on March 26 this year, with seven local authority elections and two national assembly ones.

Masvingo Urban has four vacant wards, with two in Chivi and one in Bikita.

For national assembly, there is Chivi South and Mwenezi East.

ZESA Chair Sydney Gata Divorces Mugabe Sister

By A Correspondent- ZESA executive chairman Sydney Gata is divorcing his wife of 35 years after telling a court their marriage has “irretrievably broken down.”

Gata married Ntombana Regina Mugabe, a sister to the late former president Robert Mugabe, in January 1987.

In summons filed at the Harare High Court, Gata said the couple had not lived together as husband and wife for 30 of those 35 years.

Gata says in court papers: “The marriage between us has irretrievably broken down… I have lost all love and affection towards the defendant. We have lived apart since 1992 which is inconsistent with a normal marriage relationship.

“We have reached an agreement with the defendant and the agreement has been reduced to a consent paper between us.”

In the settlement, biotechnologist Mugabe will keep a house in Grange, Harare, on a piece of land measuring 4,260 square meters.

Gata also agreed to pay Mugabe a lump sum of US$18,000 and US$800 in divorce costs.

The ZESA chief will also pay Mugabe US$500 monthly for her upkeep or the equivalent in Zimbabwean dollars backdated to January 1, 2022.

“Plaintiff’s obligation to pay spousal maintenance… shall terminate once the plaintiff’s employment contract with ZESA terminates on November 30, 2024, or is for any reason earlier terminated than November 30, 2024,” the couple’s agreement says.

Gata and Mugabe have a son together, who is now an adult.

The matter is pending.

Cop In Soup Over US$5 Bribe

By-A Policeman stationed at CID Headquarters was Thursday dragged to court after he allegedly received a US$5 bribe.

Detective Constable Moses Kainga (39) was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Yeukai Dzuda who remanded him in custody to today for bail ruling.

He was assisted by Kainga who then demanded US$5 to facilitate the process.
Mandaza reported the case to Transparency International, a non-governmental organisation.

He was accompanied by Tracy Mutiwokuziva to report the matter at CID Headquarters.
A trap was initiated and Mandaza went to CID Headquarters and joined the queue.
He handed over the US$5 and collected his wife’s fingerprints.

After the transaction was completed, the police approached Kainga and showed him the trap authority.

He was searched and found in possession of the US$5, leading to his arrest.

Zanu Pf Frets Over “Bhora Musango”

By A Correspondent- Zanu PF officials in Bulawayo Province have expressed worry over the party’s failure to properly conduct the recent primary elections to select candidates for the March 26 by-elections.

The internal elections exposed deep-rooted factionalism in the province amid growing concerns the G40 faction might be taking control of the ruling party’s provincial structures.

Party insiders who spoke to The Zimbabwe Independent fear that the national leadership’s failure to address complaints raised soon after the primary elections might trigger a “bhora musango” scenario.

Bhora Musango was a clandestine campaign by some Zanu PF leaders in the run-up to the 2008 harmonised elections against voting for the party’s presidential candidate leader Robert Mugabe while voting for the party’s parliamentary and local council candidates. Said an unnamed official:

The primary elections were rigged and this will work against the President. For some wards, ballots were mixed so that people could not see their candidates.

Ballots never balanced with figures of up to 100 in some instances. That means people were smuggled even when they were not on the voting list.

Vote-buying was allowed with no questions asked. Complaints on the irregularities were not entertained while the provincial chair acknowledged there was something wrong with primaries.

The chairman must know that he is chairing a pure 70% G40 executive.

Zanu PF Bulawayo chairperson Jabulani Sibanda, who landed the post in December after years in the political wilderness, dismissed reports of factionalism and claims that complaints were swept under the carpet. He said:

That is nonsense, there is no factionalism here. I am aware of what you are asking.

All the complaints brought to the office were forwarded to Harare and that is where you can get your answers from. I don’t have answers to your questions.

However, the Zanu PF insider claimed Sibanda Sibanda was bypassed when candidates’ curriculum vitae were sent to the party’s head office. He said:

Sibanda is now just a shadow of his former self. It is known from way back that Sibanda and Mnangagwa are close, even during the late former president Robert Mugabe’s tenure.

We expected a change from him but many people are disappointed.

Hopefully, he will find a solution; on the issue of candidates, he was left out only to know when curriculum vitae had reached Harare. They bypassed him.

Reports suggest that Zanu PF members within provincial structures are divided between those allegedly backing Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga and others belonging to a group aligned to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Miners Throw Weight Behind Striking Teachers

By A Correspondent- National Mine Workers’ Union of Zimbabwe (NMWUZ) President Mr Kurebwa Javangwe Nomboka has urged parents to rally behind striking teachers by not sending their children to school this first schooling term of 2022.

Nomboka said it was morally right to take a diplomatic stance in standing with teachers’ Unions that have been fighting for wage adjustment above PDL – Poverty Datum Line.

Teachers have been calling upon the government to restore their 2018 salaries (US$540) but the employer has not yet paid heed to the call saying it was incapacitated to give them what they are requesting.

The government Thursday suspended striking teachers for three months without pay. Nomboka believes teachers need parents’ support. He said:

I urge parents right across the country of Zimbabwe to support teachers’ quest for decent work and they can do that by refusing to send their kids to school this first term until employers resolve the demands for salary adjustment and as a union representing mine workers nationwide we’re herein standing in solidarity with teachers in downing tools.

All workers Unions in Zimbabwe should rally behind teachers and that as I have above must involve the contribution of parents as the improvements of teachers’ working conditions will simultaneously improve on the quality of education and affordability in terms of fees and other amenities.

He said 2022 was the year of workers’ rights, and decent work for the worker.

Meanwhile, NMWUZ President has hinted that employers meet the standing demands of mineworkers or risk facing unending protests and strikes in 2022.

Mineworkers are demanding their employers to give them COVID-19 monthly allowance and salaries in USD – United States dollars that are above PDL. – Pindula News

Intimidating Teachers Not A Solution To Deepening Crisis- CCC

Tinashe Sambiri|The Citizens’ Coalition For Change led by President Nelson Chamisa has challenged the Zanu PF regime to stop harassing teachers.

Stop Bullying Hungry Educators

Stop bullying hungry educators! Citizens Coalition For Change Namibia castigates education minister Evelyn Ndlovu.

12 February 2022

Citizens Coalition For Change ( CCC) Namibia is in absolute solidarity with the illegally suspended incapacitated teachers in the motherland. As a district, we would like to applaud and laud the extraordinary solidarity displayed by the vibrant Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA) and the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions towards teachers who are victims of authoritarianism. In the National Democratic Yellow Revolution led by President Advocate Nelson Chamisa, we believe in solidarity, injure one injure all.

For this reason, we stand ever ready to complement those who have the varlour, nerve and mettle to demand the restoration of the lost and forgotten dignity of our diligent educators who are now wallowing in abject poverty. Since we epitomise constitutional democracy, we want to make it very clear to the misguided minister of primary and secondary education Evelyn Ndlovu that she has no authority to suspend anyone in the civil service. Her faculties were supposed to remind her that teachers are employees of the Public Service Commission not a mere old and uneducated minister.

We reiterate that her behaviour is uncalled for because it is illegal and this attempt to suffocate our teachers should be resisted with equal measure. Zanupf government should honour teachers and restore them to the good old days when teachers commanded great respect in the motherland. Citizens Coalition For Change Namibia has the conviction that the teaching fraternity produces revolutionary intellectuals who will be readily available to prosecute the democratic struggle to its logical conclusion. Teachers should earn enough money to send their children to boarding schools while still managing to lead an admirable lifestyle in the community.

Moreover, the yellow team in Namibia aspires to see a sensitive government engaging with incapacitated teachers than to offer threats of three months suspension without salary to educators who have failed to report for duty since the official opening of schools on the 7th of February 2022. We emphasize that the minister’s proclamation of a blanket suspension is not only illegal and unconstitutional but evil and satanic! Zanupf must halt treating our hardworking teachers with contempt. Our educators should afford to purchase a decent vehicle. The standard of living should be upgraded through a living wage.

Teachers should not be punished for failing to get bus fares to go back to work. Theirs is incapacitation not a strike. It is also enshrined in the supreme law of country that workers have the right to demonstrate or go on strike against slave wages. We concur with the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union (Artuz) organic and pragmatic President Obert Masaraure who made it point blank that educators have been reduced to paupers since they are existing in abject poverty and that they can’t afford to pay fees in the schools where they are offering their quality services which quite sorry and pathetic. #RegisterToVoteForChange.

Furthermore, Citizens Coalition For Change Namibia maintains that the misguided minister has to withdraw her press statement proclamation because it is evil and unprofessional. Our message to all teachers and the rest of the civil service is that they should continue with the incapacitation action so that the insensitive government is compelled to address the issue of pre-October 2018 salary of 540US$ per month. As a reminder to all again, teachers should not sacrifice their voting rights for one day allowance as polling officials on the voting day. They always fall victim to massive displacements during the voting period and Zanupf uses that to rig elections.

Teachers should be deployed in their voting areas so that they can also exercise their fundamental right to vote for change in 2023. We encourage educators and all civil servants to join Zimbabwe Nurses Association and Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions in support of the illegally and wrongfully suspended incapacitated teachers. Citizens Coalition For Change Namibia remains resolutely behind educators. We believe in education as a vehicle for social and economic mobility hence a priority in the Yellow Revolution.

In a nutshell, we want to warn Evelyn Ndlovu to desist from giving empty threats to the suffering teachers instead of addressing their sorry situation. Social democrats in Namibia assure the striking teachers that victory is certain with participatory democracy. Continue piling pressure to the clueless Zanupf regime which claims to have a surplus that is invisible in the unsound bleeding economy. It is now imperative to confront the beast in the eye. Teachers should escalate civic engagement and intensive voter registration in their communities so that we win Zimbabwe for the change that delivers.

This is a struggle to save the education fraternity. Register to vote for a LIVING WAGE. Register to vote against SLAVE WAGES. Register to vote against PEACEFUL SLAVERY. It is now time for DANGEROUS FREEDOM. A New Great Zimbabwe is possible in our lifetime. Vote Citizens Coalition For Change(CCC) in 2022 and 2023 for socio-economic transfiguration.

ENGRAVING THE POLITICAL TOMBSTONE OF DOUGLAS MWONZORA

Mr Douglas Mwonzora has no political currency and does not know exactly which political party he intends to lead.

By Leonard Koni- Currently his party is suffering from identity crisis and has been caught in a catch 22 situation whether to use MDC-T or MDC-Alliance.

His rally slated for this coming weekend is being advertised as MDC-T rally.

MDC-T leader is trying to fool the electorate by continuing using the late Morgan Tsvangirayi’s photos on his campaigning material.

What he is failing to understand is that Zimbabweans are very much aware that the former and founder leader of MDC is now late, even the people from the remotest areas are much aware.

To show that Mwonzora cannot match either the late Morgan Tsvangirayi or Nelson Chamisa he has opted to hold by-elections campaign at Zororo Grounds in Highfield West on Saturday instead of the traditional and ceremonial  Zimbabwe Grounds where the late Tsvangirayi used to pull a large crowd of supporters.

This launch is going to expose the man who purports to be leading the biggest opposition political party in Zimbabwe.

Mwonzora is trying  to be relevant in Zimbabwe’s political circles but deep inside his heart knows that he has been relegated into the political dustbin.

He actually lost the plot when he started dining and wining  with unfashionable Zanu-PF through getting support from armed riot police and the military to seize control of the MDC-Alliance headquarters and other offices countrywide.

Douglas Mwonzora’s politics of deception and tomfoolery has come to a dead end and at a point of no return. He must be reminded that politics is a game of numbers not seizing properties and looking for validation from a captured judiciary.

His statement that he wants to jettison politics of hate, toxicity and acrimony and replace it with politics of tolerance and rational disputation leaves a lot to be desired because he was the architect of recalling members of parliament hence these by elections today. He hates the people and is power hungry.

The people can’t wait to put a last nail to his political coffin on the 26th of March 2022 and are ready to burn his fingers in the ballot box.

‘I am Being Trailed’ – Human Rights Activist

By A Correspondent| A Bulawayo-based human rights activist has said he is now being targeted  by state security agents    following his remarks on devolution.

Speaking to this publication, 39-year-old Gedeon Mpofu said he has already sought refuge in South Africa at the moment following the incessant surveillance and trailing by suspected state agents.

“I had no choice but to flee to South Africa temporarily because I couldn’t stand being followed by unmarked vehicles every time.
“On another day I was shocked when an anonymous caller told me to ‘behave’ or face the consequences”, revealed Mpofu.
Narrating his ordeal, the human rights activist said what could have attracted the threats are his remarks on devolution.
“While on  a road show with a local theatre organisation I frankly told the Zanu PF government that it was humming on devolution but continuing to sideline the Matebeleland region.

” I also spoke that before any Gukurahundi reforms   President Emmerson Mnangagwa need to apologise for the remarks he made during the atrocities”, added Mpofu.
The revelations by Mpofu comes hardly a month after a Gukurahundi  memorial plaque at Bhalagwe in Maphisa, Matabeleland South province was destroyed by suspected state agents.

For speaking against the Zanu PF regime, Chief  Nhlanhlayamangwe Ndiweni of Ntabazinduna was dethroned in 2019 after having jailled over flimsy charges. He is currently exiled in UK.

Gvt Hauled To Court Over Illegal Teachers’ Suspension

By A Correspondent- Obert Masaraure, the president of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), on Friday, filed an urgent chamber application at the High Court, challenging the suspension of striking teachers by Primary and Secondary Education Minister Evelyn Ndlovu.

Masaraure argued that Ndlovu had no authority to suspend striking teachers as that was the mandate of the Public Service Commission (PSC). He said:

There is no provision giving the respondent such powers as she purports to exercise or suspend all officials within its ministry unilaterally.

The provision is clear as to what happens and who should give effect to a suspension notice.

For example, senior grade members, who are part of the applicant, are prejudiced in having to be suspended by an order of the minister when in fact; the law provides for them a different disciplinary authority.

The Press statement of the respondent is, therefore, manifestly illegal and ought to be set aside.

Masaraure, through his lawyer from the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum, added:

Although section 65 of the regulations provide for a departure from the provisions above, it is only the commission that can so authorise such departure or undertake such departure and not the Respondent of her own volition.

Further, such departure is put to a test of whether or not it will result in a substantial miscarriage of justice for it to pass as a valid departure.

There is no doubt that there will be a serious miscarriage of justice when tens of thousands of teachers are suspended without following proper procedures with just one blanketed notice on such a wide scale.

Late on Thursday, Ndlovu said striking teachers have been suspended due to their refusal to resume work despite the government’s offer to give them a 20 per cent salary increase and other non-monetary benefits.

Let’s modernise our ICT systems at the London embassy

By Engineer Jacob Mutisi- There is great news coming from Zimbabwe on how the Government has made  it “easy” to obtain identification documents, especially the passport. We ICT  professionals feel very excited about this wonderful development.

However, it is disturbing to note that what is happening at the Zimbabwean embassy in London is in sharp contrast to the latest developments at the Registrar General’s (RG) office in Zimbabwe, hence the need to engage  the services of top notch webmasters and web developers to be on ground for continuous updating of this great nation’s embassy websites.

Zimbabwean experience at the Zimbabwe’s Embassy in Zimbabwe:-
My passport was due for renewal on the 4th of March 2022, as I envisaged to dash to Zimbabwe over the British April School holidays.

I “googled” the Zimbabwe Embassy and got a google business confirmation that the opening hours are from 0800hrs to 1200hrs. I surmised that I would not be the only one in need of a new passport or other related services. So I went early to dodge the long queues. I got there by 0700hrs hoping to be one of the first to be served.

At 0750hrs an elderly gentleman opened the main door of the entrance of the embassy and was excited that I will be the first to be served. It was cold and figured it would be warm inside and was ready to walk into our embassy.

I was immediately advised that the embassy opens at 0900hrs. On querying why the difference in time with what was reflecting on the website and google business, I was shocked to hear that it was a ” wrong website”. The right Zimbabwean Embassy website is called www.ZimLondon.Gov.zw (Talk about total confusing people).

He went further to advise us to get passport photos from a shop that was 5minutes away down the road. By then there was a little small group of us. We trudged along to the photographer’s premises.

It was a broom cupboard in a skyscraper and the cost is £10 and Standard passport photo is £6. Anyway, why do I have the right to complain? We finally got in. I queued up and waited in line. The line moved fast.

When my turn came I was met by lady who was as polite as anyone in public service. I was given a form to fill and told to go and make copies of my IDs. I had to go out of the building again to (a photocopying shop) perform this latest task.

I returned and was directed to the payment window. I paid my fee and was directed to go to the first window again. At the first window my paperwork was given once over and I was directed to the finger print desk which was in another room.

I found an elderly Asian gentleman who was on the phone (reminded me of Bhadella Wholesalers where you were served behind a counter of some sort.) He assisted with the finger printing process and directed me to go back to window 1.

I was now given the passport form to fill out. Filled and took it back. It was given back to me once over again and was advised to send the form to Zimbabwe and someone could get the passport once it’s done for me.

I just shudder to think why in this day and age  should we have such a primitive mode of applying for a passport in a first world country like the United Kingdom. The Zimbabwe government has been praised by the world bank and international organizations for implementation of some of the best electronic systems in Africa.

Why are we not implementing the same ICT systems at our International embassies? What kind of image are we portraying out there?

There is a need to have a biometric system that eliminates the traditional “picture taken” methodology which is very ancient. Zimbabwe needs a centralized database system which eliminates submission of  photocopies for one’s identification documents. Get everything digitized as we embrace the paperless office.

What is baffling is why  our Registrar General’s office would require document duplicates ( IDs, passports, marriage, birth and death certificates) to bring photocopies of what they created themselves and registered.

A clear reflection of resistance to embrace technology which makes the process less cumbersome and convenient to both the service provider and service receiver. Does this mean that our Registrar General does not have electronic copies of our identity documents on their servers?  Zimbabwe is a progressive country and should progress both internally and internationally.

Why do we have the domain www.zimLondon.Gov.zw for the Zimbabwean embassy instead of www.zimbabweembassyuk.Gov.zw Are we equating our great country to a city in the United Kingdom. This is disgraceful should be rectified with immediate effect.

Once again I want to register my gratitude to the Registrar General for a job well done at the Zimbabwean Office. Let us do the same to all our embassies so as to ensure a dignified reflection of our country to the  rest of the world in line with our mantra, Zimbabwe is NOW open for business.

“Government Is Not A Exemplary Employer”: UANC President Muzorewa

By A Correspondent- The UANC President Dr Gwinyai Mzorewa has blasted the Zimbabwean government for its stance on striking teachers adding that the current administration was not an exemplary employer.

We publish below the full text by President Muzorewa:

Government should be the model for all employers in Zimbabwe. However, for The Public Service Commission [PSC] Secretary Ambassador Wutawunashe to announce that civil servants [Teachers] would be paid only for the days they show up to work, is abdicating responsibility.

Since the PSC’s function is “to promote the constitutionally prescribed values and principles governing public administration in the public service; investigate, monitor and evaluate the organization and administration, and the personnel practices, of the public service”, this Commission should be solving the “equity salary issue” in a fair and just fashion. For example teachers do not work at school only [more so these Covid19 days].

Excellent teachers do their lesson preparations [Planning] at home, using their own
candles, paraffin, or Zesa. For that, they are entitled to fair salaries, not less than $520 US. Ambassador Wutawunashe’s announcement to cut teachers’ pay is both punitive and intimidating.

During this pandemic, the Government does not need the various Workers’ Unions to have to demand conditions conducive to work. It should be obvious. Government Ministers, MPs and Senators, are absent from their offices, yet they get their full pay? Where is justice? At least POLAD members are paid for advising the President to get us where we are.

THE UANC‘s economic and human rights policies, as well as integrity, are not consistent with the ruling party’s policies. Opposition parties that are serious about Change, stayed away from POLAD as well.

We will collaborate with such leadership because, by definition, opposition parties must oppose government failures, knowing that they can do better. When THEUANC was last in power[ 1979-80], civil servants’ salaries, paid in good hard currency, were actually raised, and bonuses were paid in November.

Now, the RBZ Governor will resign to fulfill his promise [ $1 US to $1 WZL] which has long
expired. This would save the economy from oozing through the top- – a strange phenomenon indeed.

Technocrats will close all the corruption holes, while THEUANC politicians meet the aspirations of the nations through insistence on accountability, transparency and integrity from top echelons to tea makers.

Government has never treated civil servants, [specifically teachers, nurses and doctors] with the professional respect they deserve for the past decades. It is reported that 90% of Zimbabwe trained teachers are working outside the country. The ruling party should prohibit Government from letting it plunge the nation below the lowest socio-economic standards in the SADC region. Our neglected school children, who are our future, our supposed inheritance, belong to all, disregarding our politicalaffiliation.

President ED Mnangagwa who promises Middle Class society by 2030, should not be
entombing the same people in their premature economic graves. Over 380 teachers are reported to have committed suicide in the last few years due to hardships caused by such conditions.

THEUANC and parents whose children are taught under this imposed austerity, demand that government should NOT destroy Zimbabwean’s socio-economic values, including affordable Education, Housing and Health care systems, a sense of self-respect and a decent work ethic. In the ‘60s and ‘70s we went out of the country to fight for political freedom and independence; now people are leaving the country to fight for personal welfare, unless they are looting the nation’s wealth and in search of freedom.

In the meantime, the nation is crumbling to pieces. So we ask: was it worth it? Well, THEUANC has a reason to answer, yes, it was worth it as we bring back good governance, economic recovery and the rule of law, if we get the mandate to rule in 2023.

Suspending Incapacitated Teachers Is Flogging A Starved Horse – They’re Victims Of Mess Not The Culprits

By Patrick Guramatunhu- In 2018 a Zimbabwe teacher was paid US$540 per month in US$. Since then, government paid them the equivalent in local currency but never bother to adjust the amount to keep pace with inflation.

The year-on-year inflation rate was as follows:

2018                10%

2019                255%

2020                557%

2021                92%

2022                30% (projected)

With all the wage increases over the same period the teachers now earn US$ 35 in local currency down from US$540 in 2018.

It is little wonder that the teachers have been asking for the wages to revert to the 2018 level and paid in US$ or paid in local currency but pegged to the US$ at the black-market exchange rate.

Government has offered 20% wage increase on the current wage paid in local currency plus add on benefit such as allowing to teachers to import cars duty-free. A sick joke! How many teachers earning US$35 per month can afford to buy a car?

It is no surprise that teachers rejected the insulting government offer and voted with their feet – stayed home, missing opening day for the new academic year.

Government has responded and suspended without pay for three months all teachers and officials who did not turn up for work when schools opened on Monday.

There is no denying that this government has thrown the teachers, nurses and other civil servants without the same political muscle as soldiers and others overboard. The teachers’ wages have been allowed to slip further and further back compared to the soldiers and Police. Why? They are both human beings with the same basic needs of food, shelter, transport, health care, education for their children, etc. They are both employed by the same taskmaster and paid from the same pot!

Besides, the whole country knows that corruption remains a serious problem, the nation is losing US$1.2 billion per year through gold smuggling. Zimbabwe has the wealth to afford all its people a decent living if only something is done to end the criminal waste of resources through mismanagement and corruption. After the 2017 military coup, President Mnangagwa promised “zero tolerance to corruption”! It is now four years since he made the promise, he must deliver on his promise or ship out!

The idea that government can continue to cut wages of teachers, nurses, etc. – this is what inflation does, it cuts one’s wages – and still expect the worker to continue working regardless is absurd. If the fuel tank is empty, the engine will stop; this is exactly what the teachers mean by incapacitation.

Suspending incapacitated teachers will make no difference, it’s flogging a horse so weak and feeble it cannot stand much less carry the bloated rider!

Many teachers and nurses have been forced to leave the profession and/or country to seek a living because of the poor wages and working conditions in Zimbabwe. Many of those still working would have left too if there were other employment opportunities; with unemployment rate a nauseating 90% plus, there are no jobs.

Lest we forget, this teachers’ strike is disrupting the student’s education over and above the many disruptions cause by corona virus these last two years. All these students will be forced to the next grade even if they learned very little these last two years because education is a conveyer belt that does not stop. This is a whole generation that will be playing catch-up and many never will catch-up and realise their full human potential. Never!

Government has kicked the problem of slave wages for teachers, nurses, etc. down the street for donkey years it is crunch-time, address the problem. Government is to blame for this crisis and suspending the teachers is not going to solve anything. Enough is enough!

Telecomms Giant Econet Wireless In Unfair Labour Treatment Storm

By A Correspondent- Telecommunications giant, Econet Wireless has been taken to court by an employee, Maxwell Kasema, over allegations of unfair treatment.

In a Labour Court application Kasema is raising concerns around his alleged omission from the company’s share scheme as well as a transfer which did not follow due process. Kasema was employed by Econet Wireless in February 2012 as a shop steward (Grade 3) and the job became permanent in February 2013.

In April 2013, Econet Wireless underwent a grading exercise and Kasema’s job title was changed to sales consultant.

He then raised an issue of remuneration alignment in accordance with his added duties and the matter culminated in an application for review being made to the Labour Court which failed on a preliminary point. A judgment was handed down on June 28, 2019.

Around the same period, Econet Wireless initiated an employee share scheme but despite a good record of performance, Kasema was excluded.

Kasema was aggrieved and after exhausting the internal grievance process he was advised by Econet Wireless management that the share scheme and the qualifying criteria for the same were confidential despite the fact that Econet’s remuneration policy advocates for transparency.

On June 27, 2019 and by letter, Kasema was advised that he was being unilaterally transferred from Harare to Manicaland province in Checheche.

Kasema mounted a grievance against the transfer on December 13, 2019 and he nevertheless complied with the company’s wishes.

“However, in the process of relocating to Checheche, Kasema was advised that he would now be working in Mutare and that is where he has been stationed despite being formally transferred to Checheche. The inconsistency and lack of certainty abides to this very date,” read part of the court application.

The application states that Kasema was not given an opportunity to make representations as to why the job transfer should be reconsidered. In all other previous transfers, Kasema was engaged prior to any decisions.

“Econet Wireless’s cumulative conduct which is proximate and pursuant to Kasema losing in court on a technicality makes it clear that Econet Wireless unjustifiably flexed its muscles at Kasema’s expense.”

Kasema then approached the National Employment Council for the Communications and Allied Services Industry for relief on the matter but Econet stated that it did not belong to the said employment council.

As a result of Econet’s unwillingness to recognise the jurisdiction of the National Employment Council for the Communications and Allied Services Industry, the employment council failed to make a determination regarding the relief sought by Kasema in terms of the aforementioned share scheme and unilateral transfer.

The court application is in terms of section 93(7)(b)(ii) of the Labour Act [Chapter 28:01] seeking an order allowing Kasema to participate in the share scheme together with payment of all loss of benefit by Econet Wireless to Kasema and reinstatement of Kasema to his post in Harare with immediate effect. Econet is yet to respond to the Kasema application.

ZESA Boss Sydney Gata Divorces Mugabe’s Sister

VP Chiwenga Promises Peaceful Polls

Man Kills Self After Axing Wife

By A Correspondent- A man from Bekezela township in Filabusi committed suicide after axing his wife, leaving her for dead on Monday morning.

“Innocent Chandakaona had a misunderstanding with his wife over an undisclosed matter and he took an axe and started axing his wife all over the body until she was unconscious. It is believed that he thought the wife had died and he took a wire and hanged himself in the same house,” said Ins Mangena.

She said the wife later regained consciousness and screamed which alerted neighbours who came to the scene and later reported the matter to police.

“The wife is admitted at Filabusi District Hospital where she is being treated. We continue urging members of the public to value life and avoid using violence to solve problems. Members of the public should also stop moving around carrying dangerous weapons. We urge communities to work together with police in preventing crime,” she said.-statemedia
