20 Years In Prison For Man Who Killed Lover

A Bindura man has been jailed for 20 years after being convicted of fatally assaulting his girlfriend.

The State alleged that on the 10th of August in 2017, Brian Chikanya of Musana village accused his girlfriend, Sarah Munhu of having an affair with another man. He then proceeded to assault her with a chisel and wooden stool.

The court heard that Chikanya tried to conceal the murder by dragging Munhu’s body to a nearby road to give the impression that the deceased was murdered on her way from a friend’s house.

During his trial, Chikanya claimed that on the day of the incident, Munhu had told him that she was going to see her friend, Sarudzai Chisvo, but got a shock of his life the next morning after she was found dead.

His version was dismissed after the State proved that Chikanya fabricated the statements in order to exonerate himself.

In his ruling, Justice Foroma sent Chikanya to prison for 20 years, emphasising that the sentence will send a correct message to would-be offenders.

Meanwhile, police in Lupane are looking for Rodwell Sibanda (42) in connection with a case of murder that occurred at Mpondo, Lupane on Tuesday. The suspect allegedly struck Prince Dube (27) once on the head with a stone after a misunderstanding over gambling.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident which occurred on April 17 at around 11PM.

She said Luke Mathonsi went to look for Raymond Moyo in the company of his wife Sithobekile Ndlovu where he assaulted him leading to his death.

“Luke Mathonsi and his wife Sithobekile Ndlovu went to Lavenia Farm, in Fort Rixon where Raymond Moyo was employed as a herd boy and found him asleep. Moyo came outside and sat down near his bedroom door. Mathonsi accused Moyo of telling his employer that he stole some railway slippers which were used as fencing poles at Lavenia Farm.

Chaos As Auxillia Mnangagwa Disrupts Traffic Flow In Masvingo

Tinashe Sambiri| Mrs Auxillia Mnangagwa on Thursday forced ZRP cops in Masvingo Province to abandon their daily duties to attend a health programme she facilitated.

Mrs Mnangagwa was at Masvingo Polytechnic on Thursday where she addressed a health forum.

Impeccable sources have pointed out that Mrs Mnangagwa is already campaigning for her husband, Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, who faces a daunting task as he seeks to maintain a firm grip on power.

On Wednesday afternoon, Mrs Mnangagwa caused a rare traffic jam in the city of Masvingo as cops were forced to control the movement of vehicles to facilitate her passage.

A source at Benjamin Burombo Building said :
” You see this woman is not a government official but she is being escorted by State security agents.

She personally ordered police officers to abandon their duties to attend her event.

Mrs Mnangagwa is worse than Grace Mugabe. She is arrogant and emotional.”

The source added: ” So Mrs Mnangagwa forced police officers to attend her event because members of the public snubbed the event.”

Notorious Armed Robber Escapes Into South Africa

One of Zimbabwe’s most wanted suspected armed robbers, Conwell Junior Kasambarare, who is facing a plethora of robbery and housebreaking charges, is believed to have recently escaped to Cape Town after CID crack teams were deployed countrywide to track down and arrest all criminals involved in such activities.
Kasambarare, who is alleged to have been part of Musa Taj Abdul’s criminal gang and now suspected of masterminding a spate of armed robberies and housebreaking cases in and around Harare, was released last year on bail.

Sources close to the investigations said after he heard that detectives from the CID Homicide which deals with violent crimes were still looking for him, he then fled to South Africa.

A suspected accomplice, Spicer Takawira, was recently arrested on charges of house housebreaking and theft.

Kasambarare, Takawira together with Leo Mandaza, Godwin Kusikwenyu (34), last known address 11222 Parkridge Kuwadzana, and another one only identified as Chamu, recently allegedly committed seven cases of housebreaking and theft in Harare.

Takawira, Musafare Mupanhanga and Kasambarare are also alleged to be part of the gang that raided Mashwede Holdings in 2020 and got away with over US$100 000, R42 000, $14 000 worth of fuel coupons, firearms and 20 live rounds of ammunition.

With Mandaza and Takawira in custody, police are still keen to arrest of Kasambarare.

In March 2020, Mashwede Holdings lost the cash to five workers and nine suspected robbers. The five workers, Mupanhanga and Kasambarare, were then arrested and appeared in court.

Among the five workers were two brothers related to the business owner, while two were security guards. The two robbers were then remanded in custody and told only the High Court could grant bail, and it did.

Recently, a notorious robber, who has been on the police’s most wanted list, was shot and killed in Glen View 1, Harare, where he was hiding at his girlfriend’s house.

Decide Rice had been operating from South Africa and committing a spate of armed robberies across borders.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said after committing his Zimbabwean robberies he would flee to South Africa. But then detectives recently received information that Rice was hiding at his girlfriend’s house in Glen View 1 and they reacted.

The detectives cordoned off the house and after being confronted, he attacked them resulting in warning shots being fired. He kept attacking and so was shot in both legs and right upper arm.

Rice was pronounced dead on admission to a city hospital.

Police searched his girlfriend’s house and discovered detonators that are believed to have been used to blast safes.

According to the police, Rice was responsible for more than 12 cases of armed robbery committed since 2017. Rice had escaped several shoot-outs with the police.

Recently, police declared war on armed robbers following an increase in violent crimes countrywide. The police are hunting them down and arresting them, but like Rice some want to try and escape in gunfights. -Herald

In Trouble Property Man Blames Engineer

Property developer George Katsimberis yesterday blamed his engineer for tricking him to use plans, which were not approved by the City of Harare.
Katsimberis is accusing former Pokugara Properties managing director Mr Micheal Van Blerk of perjury.

However, Van Blerk is denying all charges being levelled against him.

Asked by Van Blerk’s lawyer advocate Tawanda Zhuwarara during cross examination if he was the one who went to the Cleveland Council House to get the building plan stamped, Katsimberis admitted saying he sent his engineer to Cleveland House to get the building plan of cluster houses that he was supposed to build in Borrowdale.

He told the court that his engineer went to Cleveland to get the building plan stamped and approved.

Responding to another question by advocate Zhuwarara on whether the engineer went to the Mt Pleasant office or Cleveland House, Katsimberis replied that it was Cleveland.

He also stated that he was sure that the building plans were approved at Cleveland.

Advocate Zhuwarara told Katsimberis that Cleveland House only deals with industrial building plans and not homes.

He went on to ask Katsimberis if he had any proof apart from the receipts that his building plans were approved at Cleveland to which he said he had none at that moment.

Zhuwarara further told Katsimberis that the plan that he is relying on was for a stand number 10 and not number 9 which he is insisting in court.

Katsimberis insisted that it was number 9 and blamed his engineer for the blunder.

Advocate Zhuwarara further told Katsimberis that if he had issues with the documents provided by Van Blerk he should have stopped the matter from hearing at the High Court.

The lawyer further said the High Court matter was removed from the roll but Katsimberis appealed at the Supreme Court and his case was dismissed.

Van Blerk is denying the purjury allegations saying the charges are contrived and calculated to embarrass him.

The state represented by Zivanai Macharaga had alleged that Van Blerk in his personal capacity and representing Pokugara Properties filed a false written statement and lied in a sworn affidavit that a show house constructed by land developer Katsimberis was built without approved building plans from the City of Harare.

The showroom in question was constructed by Katsimberis under a joint venture deal with Pokugara Properties.

Zhuwarara told the court that Van Blerk did not lie that the showroom was build without approved building plans from City of Harare through a letter dated July 26, 2018.

Harare Mr Ngoni Nduna postponed the matter to April 28 for trial continuation. -Herald

Key Information About Noncommunicable Diseases

WHO welcomes the establishment of a new Heads of State and Government Group to accelerate progress towards the SDG target for noncommunicable diseases ̶ a one-third reduction in “premature” deaths from diseases like diabetes, cancer, heart and lung disease and the promotion of mental health and well-being.

The decision was taken at the inaugural International Strategic Dialogue on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) and the Sustainable Development Goals, held today in Accra, Ghana, where a new Global Compact on NCDs was launched. The dialogue was co-hosted by WHO, together with the Governments of Ghana and Norway.

Heads of State highlighted the urgency of the NCD pandemic, which kills 7 out of 10 people globally from risk factors like tobacco, alcohol, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and air pollution.

NCDs are largely preventable and treatable, nearly 7 million lives could be saved for just US$ 0.84 per person per year from now until 2030. This investment would realize more than US$ 230 billion in economic and societal benefits and avert nearly 10 million heart attacks and strokes globally by 2030.

The Heads of States and Governments Group announced that it will gather countries championing the NCD agenda and will convene annually at the UN General Assembly. The first meeting is expected to take place in September 2022.

The NCD Compact will focus on five key areas of commitment:

saving, by 2030, the lives of 50 million people from dying prematurely of NCDs by implementing the most cost-effective measures to prevent and control NCDs;
protecting 1.7 billion people living with NCDs by ensuring that they have access to the medicines and care they need during humanitarian emergencies;
integrating NCDs within primary health care and universal health coverage;
comprehensive NCD surveillance and monitoring; and
meaningfully engaging 1.7 billion people living with NCDs and mental health conditions in policy-making and programming.
The economic, as well as the health, benefits of investing in NCDs was a clear theme at the Dialogue. Norway has been a frontrunner in investment in the fight against NCDs, investing internationally, becoming the first donor country to include NCDs in its international development strategy.

Mr Nana Addo Dankwa Afuko-Addo, President of Ghana, outlined the successes of Ghana in implementing tobacco demand-reduction measures and introducing guidelines for NCD management, but also highlighted the challenges for lower-income countries in accelerating action.

Statements from the meeting:

Mr Nana Addo Dankwa Afuko-Addo, President of Ghana:

“Tacking the phenomenon of NCDs requires leadership to provide visibility to NCD issues. I ask my Heads of State colleagues to join hands with me as we establish a Presidential Group (non-binding), and as we find solutions to NCDs with a roadmap of universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals. In our time, this will be our legacy”.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization:

“Apart from the lives they take, NCDs take a heavy toll on economies, cutting down people in their most productive years. Overcoming this challenge requires technical, financial, and above all, political commitment. I thank the Governments of Norway and Ghana for establishing the first Global Heads of State and Government Group on NCDs, and launching the Global NCD Compact 2020-2030.”

Mr Jonas Gahr Støre, Prime Minister of Norway:

“Investing in stronger health systems, service delivery and the prevention of NCDs will make vulnerable populations more resilient to COVID-19 and future pandemics. This is also vital for promoting universal health coverage. NCD prevention, and access to treatment and medicine must be a core component in the efforts to enhance pandemic preparedness and response, and in building back better in the post-pandemic recovery.”

Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa:

“Noncommunicable diseases account for nearly a third of deaths in Africa, where they not only pose a grave threat to health and well-being, but also blunt socioeconomic development. The commitment reached today marks a crucial step in speeding up the progress against these diseases and their risk factors as well as the suffering and deaths they cause.

Biden Confronts Mnangagwa Over Electoral Reforms

By- The United States (US) embassy has urged the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to implement electoral reforms recommended in the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (ZIDERA).

The US imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe in 2001 under ZIDERA following the chaotic land reform programme that was characterised by human rights abuses, economic mismanagement and electoral theft by the government led by the late former President Robert Mugabe.

In a series of tweets yesterday, the US embassy criticised ZEC over the manner the electoral body handled the March 26 by-elections.

It said there was intimidation and assault of voters, which if not addressed would jeopardise the credibility of polls expected next year. The US embassy said:

We commend all the volunteers, observers, party agents, polling agents, police officers and voters who made March 26 by-elections happen and took their time to invest in Zimbabwe’s democracy.

We appreciated the opportunity to observe by-elections, but remain very concerned about harsh rhetoric, intimidation and violent assaults in the lead-up to election day. Voters have the right to participate in political processes free from fear and violence. Zidera requires Zimbabwe to hold an election ‘widely accepted as free and fair by independent international monitors,’ and to sufficiently improve the pre-election environment to be consistent with international standards.

We urge Zec to publicly release an auditable electronic voters roll far in advance of 2023 elections so that citizens can help to strengthen the credibility of the voters roll and reduce the numbers of potential voters turned away from polling stations.

To achieve this, Zimbabwe’s government must commit to a level playing field, apply laws to all candidates and parties and guarantee public media gives nationwide, equal, non-partisan airtime for all candidates during the election period.

Independent electoral watchdogs and statisticians allege that the voters’ roll that was used in the 26 March 2022 by-elections had several discrepancies which include alleged movement of voters from their constituencies and wards and the creation of additional polling stations under unclear circumstances.

Government has, on several occasions, accused the US of working in cahoots with the opposition to push the regime change agenda.

Armed Robbers Attack Gold Buyers

By-Five armed robbers who robbed a gold buyer of his gold and a safe containing cash have been arrested while fleeing with their loot along Nyamapanda highway.

Wiramayi Willard Gatsi(34), Benjamin Matthew Gatsi(34), Jack Mupfawa(35), Beven Kaupfu(32) and Tendai Kambanje(42) were arrested and arraigned before Mutoko magistrate court to answer to a charge of armed robbery.

They were remanded in custody by magistrate  Elijah Sibanda to April 28.

The state led by prosecutor Nathan Mujuru alleges the suspects together with three others who are still at large pounced on a gold dealer in Mutoko armed with a  pistol and two machetes demanding cash and gold.

The dealer managed to escape and the suspects stole 22 grammes of gold and a safe containing over US$14 000.

The suspects who were using an Isuzu kb registration number  AAX 4293 were intercepted by Criminal Investigations  Department officers along Nyamapanda highway after a high-speed chase and they disembarked before fleeing in different directions.

Gatsi who is the owner of the vehicle was arrested on April 13 and he implicated the other suspects.

State Moves To Sink Marry Chiwenga

By- The state has said that the police were ready with Marry Chiwenga’s docket on attempted murder charges and it was now perusing it with the expectation of prosecuting her when she returns to court within the next month.

Prosecutor Mr Lancelot Mutsokoti said they were hoping that they will be ready to prosecute Marry when she returns to court on June 21 this year.
Mubaiwa is alleged to have attempted to take Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s life by removing a medical intravenous set and a catheter when he was hospitalised in South Africa.
“The docket on attempted murder is now complete and we are now in its possession for perusal.
“We are hoping to furnish her with a trial date on that day,” said Mr Mutsokoti.

Marry, through lawyer Mr Doug Coltart, who was standing in for Ms Beatrice Mtetwa, agreed to return to court on June 21.
She, however, placed the State on notice that she wishes to apply for refusal of further remand if she is not furnished with a trial date.
It is the State’s allegations that Marry entered into the hospital where VP Chiwenga was admitted.
The court heard that she then unlawfully removed the Vice President’s medical Intra Venous Giving Set as well as the Central Venous Catheter from him, resulting in him bleeding profusely. It is further alleged that she forced him off the bed, held his hand, and moved him out of the ward.
The State alleges that Marry was intercepted by the security personnel, she had initially locked out of the room prior to incident.
Security personnel are said to have called the hospital staff to reconnect the medical equipment she had allegedly unlawfully removed.
The Vice President was successfully resuscitated with Marry said to have disappeared from the hospital.
It is the State’s case that VP Chiwenga, prior to his admission to hospital, Marry detained him at a top hotel in Pretoria and denied him medical attention.
Her actions prompted the security team to force their way into the hotel and took him to the hospital.
Upon his re-admission Chiwenga had the two medical instruments inserted and was placed under 24-hour monitoring by the doctors and his security personnel as he was helpless, the court heard.
Marry is also charged with externalisation of US$1 million and money laundering of over US$900 000.
She was recently convicted and fined $60 000 for lying that VP Chiwenga had consented to solemnise their wedding.
Yesterday, Marry appeared before Harare regional magistrate Mr Stanford Mambanje.

Cops, CIO Arrested For Extorting US$300 From Top Gvt Official

By- Two police officers and their accomplices were dragged to court yesterday after they allegedly extorted a senior Government official.

They accused her of passing through red traffic lights at State House.
The two police officers, Cleopas Mutamba and Pirate Mazarire, together with their accomplices Passmore Tsodzo and Sinikiwe Phiri, were not asked to plead.
They appeared before Harare magistrate, Yeukai Dzuda, who remanded them in custody to today for bail ruling.
The complainant is Beaulah Chirume, a director in the Ministry of ICT and Courier Services.
The court heard that on April 6, at around 9am, Chirume was driving from Sam Levy Village, Borrowdale, where she had withdrawn money from ZB Bank.
She was driving along Seventh Street, towards the city centre, in an Isuzu vehicle, registration number AFN 3490.
The four accused persons were trailing her in a Toyota Wish, which was being driven by Tsodzo.
It is alleged Chirume turned into Samora Machel Avenue and parked her vehicle at a parking bay. The gang then parked their car at the adjacent parking bay.
Mutamba is alleged to have approached Chirume and identified himself as a member of the Central Intelligence Organisation.
He told her he knew she was a Director in the Government but had come to arrest her for passing through traffic lights, at State House, when they were signalling red.
Chirume dismissed the claims and Phiri threatened to arrest her unless she gave them US$300.
The two then ordered her to get out of her car and discuss her issue with Tsodzo and Mazarire whom, they claimed, were their bosses.
However, Chirume failed to find a breakthrough and was ordered back to her car.
By now, the court heard, Matamba was now sitting on the front passenger seat while Phiri occupied the back left seat.
They kept demanding cash prompting her to hand over US$175.
One of them took her wallet and searched it and took US$17 and $200 and ordered her to drive west along Samora Machel Avenue.
They later disembarked and got into their getaway vehicle and drove off.
Chirume filed a police report leading to their arrest. H Metro

Jabulani Sibanda Blasts Zanu PF

By- Zanu-PF chairman for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province and former Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association chairman Jabulani Sibanda has admitted that Zanu PF was responsible for the problems Zimbabwe is facing.

Sibanda told the state media in an interview on the sidelines of the 42nd main Independence Day celebrations held at Barbourfields Stadium on Monday, Sibanda said Zanu PF continues to make the same mistakes that destroyed the country.

“After 42 years of self-rule, you can see where our country is coming from and where it is going. I accept there are problems in our nation like any other nation. Some of our problems could have been avoided and can still be avoided now.
“I am asking all those responsible for our problems, be it in the opposition or in our party, Zanu-PF or in Government to just check yourself. Ask yourself what is it that you have done to improve the welfare of our people, to remove vices like tribalism, regionalism and other unnecessary differences,” said Sibanda.
He said corruption was a cancer that destroys the country while also delaying the development of the revolution.
“To those among us, especially those in Government, that are involved in corruption that destroys our country, that delays the development of our revolution, I am saying to you, one day you will stand before the people to answer for your deeds,” said Sibanda.

Zimbabwe Angered By SA Minister’s Xenophobic Speech

By- Zimbabweans have criticised South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi, over his recent remarks on unregistered foreign immigrants resident in that country.

Addressing an African National Congress (ANC) regional conference in the Eastern Cape province this week, Motsoaledi said:
Why is the ANC keeping quiet and believing [this problem] will go away? It is not going to go away. I am in Home Affairs. I know what I am talking about. We are the only country that accepts rascals. That is not the meaning of democracy. We are not going to allow that. I am coming for them. When all of them are in jail, locked in and the keys have been thrown away, then I will step down — only then.
His remarks are being interpreted as an endorsement of violence perpetrated by vigilante groups such as operation Dudula and some say such utterances only have the effect of worsening tensions between local citizens and foreign nationals. Analyst Effie Ncube said:
He should be extremely careful because he is likely to be taken by the Operation Dudula gangsters to be giving an official recognition of their criminal activities.
He said there was no evidence supporting that foreigners in South Africa were engaging in criminal activities.
Political analyst Dumisani Nkomo said:
These are shocking statements apparently from an ignorant minister, who is not even aware that it was foreigners who helped South Africa to attain independence. It was Zambia that harboured Umkhonto Wesizwe, while Zimbabwe harboured the ANC.
Political analyst Vivid Gwede said urged the Zimbabwean government to engage South Africa to get unequivocal assurances and guarantees of protection of all Zimbabwean migrants.
Gwede’s remarks were echoed by academic Methuseli Moyo who said the government should push South Africa to condemn and act on the attacks.

Foreign Affairs ministry spokesperson Livit Mugejo said the government would continue engaging its South African counterparts to find solutions to the xenophobic attacks.
Recently, a Zimbabwean Elvis Nyathi was burnt to death in South Africa by a mob from Operation Dudula after he failed to produce a passport.

Key Facts About Noncommunicable Diseases

The NCD Compact will focus on five key areas of commitment:

saving, by 2030, the lives of 50 million people from dying prematurely of NCDs by implementing the most cost-effective measures to prevent and control NCDs;
protecting 1.7 billion people living with NCDs by ensuring that they have access to the medicines and care they need during humanitarian emergencies;
integrating NCDs within primary health care and universal health coverage;
comprehensive NCD surveillance and monitoring; and
meaningfully engaging 1.7 billion people living with NCDs and mental health conditions in policy-making and programming.

Special Tribute To CCC Namibia Change Champion

Tinashe Sambiri| Citizens’ Coalition For Change Namibia has lost vibrant change champion Amai Mugandani.

In a statement on Wednesday, CCC Namibia described Amai Mugandani as a “gallant fighter and true democrat.”

Read statement below:

Citizens Coalition For Change Namibia has painfully lost its District Change Champion. Amai Mugandani was a gallant fighter, true democrat, an organic change champion and an advocate for the total emancipation of the motherland. May her dear soul rest in power.

This is so sad! Yellow revolutionaries in Namibia and the entire party were robbed of a committed cadre, a revolutionary mother, a dedicated sister and a God-fearing woman in the national democratic revolution.

As usual, we are appealing for the spirit of Ubuntu in yellow cadres in Namibia. Solidarity is a core value in social democracy.

We encourage all social democrats in Namibia to give support to the bereaved Mugandani family during these trying times. Mr Mugandani, the husband to the deceased is a member of the vibrant Citizens Coalition For Change Namibia hence solidarity becomes compulsory.

We should give the moral and financial support as our bereavement to the late cadre. May her dear soul continue to rest in power as we accomplish her desire for a New Great Zimbabwe.

Unity is power!

PYCD: Zimbabweans Should Be The Greatest Beneficiaries Of Natural Resources

Platform for Youth and Community Development Trust (PYCD) joins all progressive and patriotic sons and daughters in the country and those scattered throughout the world, in commemorating our hard fought and deserved independence @42.

The 2022 celebrations are being held under the theme: ” Zim @42-leaving no one and no place behind” PYCD acknowledges that Zimbabwe has come a long way, having to fight for socio-economic and political independence from the jaws of a determined regime that was not only powerful but also brutal and selfish.

Independence was earned through the resilience, selflessness and sacrifice by our freedom fighters and liberation war heroes both living and dead.

PYCD appeals to the present regime of President Emmerson Mnangagwa to defend our heritage by ensuring that Zimbabweans are made the greatest beneficiaries of our abundant natural resources in the country that anchors our economy.

We observe and notice the tendency by some sections of our society who are not ashamed to mimick the coloniser by promoting corrupt and selfish activities that are meant to displace communities and villagers from their communal land under the disguise of Zimbabwe being open for business.

Zimbabweans will be mobilised to resist recolonisation at 42 years after independence. PYCD is charmed by the promises of devolution as pronounced in the Zimbabwean Constitution adopted in 2013.

Zimbabwe will be a great nation if allowed to decentralise and empower local government structurers and stakeholders, that are working as organic agents for genuine community development.

The recent licensing of community radio initiatives by the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) to communities once considered remote, is a step in the right direction.

PYCD takes this opportunity of the 2022 commemorations to urge young people especially, to embrace the values planted by the liberation struggle which are peace, love, unity, selfisness and sacrifice.

These are enduring values that builds and sustains a self believing nation. PYCD observes that there is now dearth of a common purpose and vision for Zimbabwe, the basis for challenging all stakeholders like the traditional leadership and the church to converge and confront the political leadership to reflect on the need to consider the benefits of dialogue and nation building ahead of egoism and selfishness.

The 2022 theme of the year on leaving noone behind will only be achieved through consensus building.

Japan strengthens Health Services in Manicaland Province

Harare- The Government of Japan has provided US$ 322,259 in funding to increase accessibility of basic emergency medical services in remote communities of Manicaland Province, in a project implemented by the United Nations Office for Projects Services (UNOPS). The project will provide ambulances to hospitals in Chipinge and Mutasa Districts, and a PCR machine to a hospital in Nyanga District. Approximately 194,240 people are expected to benefit across the three districts.

The three districts are among the districts that were severely affected by Cyclone Idai in 2019, which damaged many health facilities and disrupted access to health services. The cyclone underlined the need for accessible health services, as many communities remain cut off from such access. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has put further strain on the already stretched health system.

In order to increase accessibility to emergency health services for remote communities, Chikore Mission Hospital in Chipinge and Hauna District Hospital in Mutasa will both be provided with a fully-equipped four-wheel-drive ambulance. The project also seeks to make communities more resilient to climate shocks and pandemics. Nyanga District Hospital in Nyanga will be provided with a PCR and extraction machine. Further, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Child Care, UNOPS will facilitate the relevant training of medical personnel. Four ambulance drivers will  be trained in ambulance operations, four nurses in integration of health services, and two laboratory technicians in operations and maintenance of the PCR and extraction machine. This project will especially focus on ensuring that women and girls have access to health facilities for vital health and support services, as disasters and emergencies have a disproportionate impact on women and girls.

The Ambassador of Japan to Zimbabwe, H.E. Mr Satoshi Tanaka, said “Given that people affected by Cyclone Idai still remain cut off from access to emergency healthcare, I hope that the ambulances will ensure that they can receive life-saving health services, and that the PCR machine will allow improved diagnosis and treatment of viruses. I also expect this new equipment to make the communities more resilient to future climate shocks and virus outbreaks in the future”.

The Country Manager for UNOPS in Zimbabwe, Mr. Djibrilla Mazin, explained that this intervention would complement Government’s efforts to restore normalcy in three of the districts of Manicaland that were affected by Cyclone Idai in 2019 – Mutasa, Chipinge and Nyanga. COVID-19 brought an additional layer of vulnerability in these communities, which suffered extensive infrastructural damage in 2019 and continue to be hit by climatic shocks.

UNOPS has been responding to the needs of Cyclone Idai-affected communities in Manicaland Province since just after the cyclone struck in 2019. In seeking to provide emergency humanitarian assistance, Japan has relied on the experience and expertise of UN agencies including UNOPS, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Child Care to identify the humanitarian response needs and effectively implement critical responses.

About UNOPS

UNOPS’ mission is to help people build better lives and countries achieve peace and sustainable development. We help the United Nations, governments and other partners to manage projects, and deliver sustainable infrastructure and procurement in an efficient way. With decades of practical infrastructure experience, UNOPS is committed to supporting climate action and tackling the climate emergency.

UNOPS in Zimbabwe is helping build the foundations to support the country’s development agenda with a focus on sustainability and national capacity development. In close collaboration with the government, UN organizations, non-governmental organizations and international financial institutions, UNOPS manages funds for disaster recovery and implements infrastructure projects with a focus on resilience and building back better communities.

Through a range of services as outlined above, UNOPS helps to accelerate the delivery and quality of humanitarian and development projects across the country.

SA Minister Tells Zimbabweans To Return Home And Solve Problems Affecting

South Africa’s minister of Mineral and Energy Resources, Gwede Mantashe, has urged Zimbabweans based in the neighbouring country to return home and help solve problems affecting their country, according to opposition Ideas Party of Democracy leader, Herbert Chamuka.

This comes at a time Zimbabweans in that country are being targeted for xenophobic attacks.

One Zimbabwean, Elvis Nyathi, was brutally killed by a mob belonging to the vigilante group, Operation Dudula, which is spearheading the attacks two weeks ago.

“I had just concluded a meeting in Pretoria over the persecution of Zimbabweans living here in South Africa when I ran into minister Gwede Mantashe at the airport. We spoke about xenophobia, and he clearly told me that the only way out if it is for Zimbabweans to go back to their country and solve their problems,” Chamuka said.

“It means Zimbabweans are no longer wanted in South Africa. What minister Mantashe said clearly shows that the South African government want Zimbabweans in their country anymore,” he said.

“But we want to encourage President Mnangagwa to fix the economy so that we do not have to rely on other countries economies. We need sit down together as Zimbabweans and try to find solutions to our problems. I will be in Zimbabwe in May and I will try to seek audience with Mnangagwa to see what can be done,” he added.

South African Hospital Tells Zim Man They Dont Put Foreigners On Dialysis

Journalist Zenzele Ndebele has reported that a relative of his has been denied access to a dialysis machine by a South African hospital after being told he is a foreigner.

“I have a relative admitted at a public hospital in South Africa. He needs a dialysis machine and Drs told us they don’t put foreigners on dialysis machine we should go to a private hospital. (This person has a valid work permit).” Ndebele wrote on Twitter.

Hundreds of Ndebele’s Twitter followers urged him to take legal action against the hospital.

However, legal experts have opined that it is not cut in stone that one must access public healthcare. This is enshrined in the case Soobramoney v Minister of Health, KwaZulu-Natal of 1997 which the court had to adjudicate on the universal constitutional right to medical treatment as against the problem of an under-resourced health care system.

Soobramoney, who was suffering from chronic renal failure, sought dialysis treatment from a state hospital in Durban. The hospital had been forced to adopt a set of guidelines for dialysis treatment because of its limited facilities

Ex-Cops Nabbed For Extorting Govt Boss

Two former police officers and two other serving members of the force were arraigned before Harare magistrate Yeukai Dzuda after conning the acting Information Communication Technology ministry secretary Beulah Chirume of her US$300 after accusing her of driving through a red robot near State House.

The accused ex-cops are Cleopas Matamba (40) and Passmore Tsodzo (46), while the two other currently serving cops were named as Sinikiwe Phiri (36) and Pirate Mazarire (38) of Zimbabwe Republic Police Kuwadzana.

The quartet was remanded to today for bail application.Allegations are that on April 6, this year at around 0900 hours, the complainant was coming from Sam Levy village where she had withdrawn her money from ZB Bank.

She was driving along 7th Street towards the central business district in her Isuzu vehicle with registration number AFN 3490 when the accused persons trailed her in a Toyota Wish vehicle with no registration number plates.

It is alleged that Chirume turned right into Samora Machel Avenue and parked her vehicle on one of the parking bays at Lifestyle furniture shop. The accused cops also parked their vehicle on the adjacent parking bay.

Before the complainant disembarked from the vehicle, she was approached by Matamba who knocked on her driver’s door and identified himself as a member of the Central Intelligence Organization.

Matamba allegedly told the complainant that he knew that she was a director in the government, but he had come to arrest her for passing through a red robot at the State House.

The complainant insisted that she did not pass through a red robot but the accused person insisted.

Phiri further disembarked from their getaway vehicle and joined Matamba in threatening the complainant with arrest; she gave them US$300.

Matamba and Phiri then ordered the complainant out of the vehicle to talk to their accomplices whom they alleged to be their bosses. They were referring to Tsodzo and Mazarire.

The complainant proceeded to the getaway car and tried to explain to the accused persons but to no avail.

The accused persons forced the complainant back to her car and Matamba occupied the front passenger seat while Phiri occupied the rear left passenger seat.

They demanded the cash and the complainant pulled her wallet from her hand bag and handed over US$ 175.00 which she gave to the accused persons.

The accused took complainant’s wallet and searched it, and took another US$17.00 and $200.00.

They ordered the complainant to drive west along Samora Machel Avenue with their getaway vehicle following behind.

Before she crossed Fifth Street, she was ordered to stop and Matamba and Phiri disembarked and got into their getaway vehicle and drove off.The complainant later went to the ZRP Five Avenue Police Base and filed a police report.

The state alleges that Matamba has a previous robbery conviction which happened in 2014. He was also arrested twice for criminal abuse of office. Phiri and Tsodzo also have pending court cases.

The state further states that they are yet to arrest their accomplices. There is CCTV footage that captured the accused persons committing the offence as well as witnesses to testify in the case.

Mudiwa Was Boring And Political At Zimpraise HICC – Chaurura

A critic has written in over the just ended Zimpraise show at the HICC. Florence Chaurura said among other things that, the rapper, Mudiwa Hood was boring and political. She announced on her Facebook handle saying in full:

I did not give you feedback of the event at HICC by Zimpraise… I must say I was seriously left DISSAPOINTED and hoping for more … The issue being that I had been at the same place for gospel concert main player being Sinach from Nigeria… When I bought my ticket it was the Sinach show that had given me the re-assurance to go back …
Zimpraise dissapointed badly ..
– they were seriously disorganized..one could tell from how they had started the show..
They started at 1750hrs which was late ..their flier said doors open 4pm whatever that meant I don’t know…
They dragged Jona Chivasa to open the show as a forebearer . This was clearly unplanned
The MC showed us they did not have a program in place by the way they were having hiccups
The choir wore black tshirts and jeans which was so unpleasant to watch …
They plugged in Mudiwa Wood who was also just but boring and political
They sung old songs which I did not mind but it became a praise and worship session ..
They brought in Jah Prayzah but managed to kill his two songs ..I was frustrated…
I could carry on but let me tell you that I paid $20 to go and watch a praise team sing for me…
The act of crucifixion was full of falsehood …
JOSEPH MADZIYIRE this was epic failure .If you don’t let the choir evolve I hate saying that this is the end of Zimpraise…..

Mugabe Minister In Court For Allegedly Stealing Computers

By -Ex- Public Service minister Petronella Kagonye has appeared in court denying criminal abuse of office charges.

In her defence, she said the allegations were orchestrated by political rivals.

Kagonye is accused of stealing computers donated to her ministry by the Post and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz).

In her testimony before Harare magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti-Guwuriro, Kagonye, Tuesday, said in 2018, she received 10 computers from Potraz to hand out to the poor in her constituency.

This was after she had on June 19, 2018, met former Information Communication Technology minister Supa Mandiwanzira in Cabinet and asked him to donate computers to her constituency.
Mandiwanzira then informed her that he had laptops, rice, blankets and cooking oil for her constituency, which were received by her brother Evans Kagonye, who then handed them to her secretary, one Catherine.
“When the computers were taken to the campaign team, I was not there as I had travelled to America, United Kingdom and France from May 28 to July 26, 2018.”
She said later people told her that they wanted to get her arrested for corruption and a docket was opened at the Special Anti-Corruption Unit.
“There was David Chivandire, who lied that he was from the President’s Office and he asked Potraz to get me arrested. They created 16 charges, but they were left with six which I signed for.”
She said some of the alleged charges were signed for by non-existent persons.
Under cross-examination by prosecutor Zivanai Macharaga, Kagonye said she did not record serial numbers for the laptops, which she donated to her constituency since she was not physically present. The matter was postponed to Friday for the continuation of trial.

Mnangagwa Panics In Public

By– President Emmerson Mnangagwa has frozen in front of Binga villagers.

ZimLive reports that the 79-year-old Zanu PF leader had been speaking for 50 minutes in Binga on April 13 when he was suddenly overcome by a brain freeze.
“Next weekend, Christians have Good Friday…,” Mnangagwa began. Then, as hundreds of people watched on, he leaned away from the microphone and turned to his deputy, Constantino Chiwenga, with the most extraordinary question.
“What’s Good Friday for by the way, was it the birth or the death (of Jesus Christ)?”
As Chiwenga patiently gave him an impromptu sermon, Mnangagwa’s confusion only intensified. “So when was Jesus born?” he pressed his deputy.
The exchange went on for half-a-minute until a supporter in the audience shouted: “ED Pfee!”
“Yeah,” Mnangagwa said as he returned to the microphone – apparently unaware it was picking every word from his chat with Chiwenga.
“I was asking whether Good Friday marks the birth or death of Christ,” he admitted.
But just moments later, he asked again if the next weekend was Easter.
In the Christian faith, Jesus’ birthday is celebrated on December 15 – Christmas – and his death is observed on Good Friday while his resurrection is celebrated on Easter Monday – the third day of his crucifixion.

Chamisa Speaks On Attending Uhuru Celebrations

By- Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party said they attended this year’s Independence Day celebrations to shade off the “sellout” tag that was coined by Zanu PF to label all those in the opposition.

Binga North legislator Prince Dubeko Sibanda said opposition parties had been labelled “unpatriotic and puppets” hence the need to change the approach to national institutions and events.

“New party, new approach. We are solving something by attending. Remember the tag of being foreign-funded and unpatriotic,” Sibanda said.

But Zanu PF director for information Tafadzwa Mugwadi said CCC overtures would not stop the ruling party from seeing them as puppets of the West.
“They can’t undo it because sellouts and puppets have an indelible tag, a permanent tattoo on their forehead. They rejected the liberation struggle and continue to say we are not free, we are not independent and heaping praises to (Ian) Smith’s racist colonial establishment,” Mugwadi said.
“No one stops them from coming to national events because we fought for all, the puruvheyas, the auxiliaries, the back watchers, the sellouts, the puppets we fought for them all and gave them freedom.”
Political analyst Simiso Mlevu said CCC’s new approach appeared to be meant to court the military command.
“This type of politics might soften the deep State. The deep State is largely made of heroes of the liberation struggle and they are wary of the cozy relations between the opposition and the Western world. So, attending Independence Day celebrations and acknowledging land reform is embracing patriotism as defined by the deep State and it, therefore, neutralises the narrative that (CCC leader Nelson) Chamisa and his party are sellouts,” Mlevu said.
Another political analyst Gibson Nyikadzino said: “There is no elite consensus in the CCC camp as it is riddled with inconsistencies regarding the land issue. (Tendai) Biti in March said CCC will reverse the land reform and give land to whites disempowering the black beneficiaries. Chamisa on the other hand said the land reform will not be reversed. There are no common values within the party.”
In his independence speech, Chamisa said it was important for the nation to respect and honour those who contributed to the country’s liberation struggle and urged Zimbabweans to unite and develop the country as a unitary force despite political differences.
“It is not easy for us to have a liberated country where people worked hard and sacrificed their lives for us to enjoy this day. We have reclaimed our soil and as such, the soil remains ours,” Chamisa said.
On the issue of land he said: “The land that was given to the people through the land reform programme will remain ours. The programme is, therefore, irreversible. No one shall separate us from our land and we will remain united on the agreement we made as Zimbabweans to take back what is ours. Let us preserve the land and work hard to produce as a nation.” Newsday

US Embassy Slams ZEC Over Bi Election Rigging

Below is a thread by the United States embassy over the just ended bi elections:

US-Embassy, Harare

As Zimbabwe moves toward 2023 general elections, we urge the government to integrate lessons learned from civil society to set the stage for peaceful and credible national elections that are fully consistent with international standards.

To achieve this: Partisan distribution of humanitarian assistance, food, agricultural inputs, and public services in exchange for votes must end.

To achieve this… Zimbabwe’s government must commit to a level playing field, apply laws to all candidates and parties, and guarantee public media gives nationwide, equal, non-partisan airtime for all candidates during the election period.

To achieve this… We urge ZEC to publicly release an auditable electronic voters’ roll far in advance of 2023 elections so citizens can help to strengthen the credibility of the voters’ roll and reduce the numbers of potential voters turned away from polling stations.

ZDERA requires Zimbabwe to hold an election “widely accepted as free and fair by independent international monitors,” and to sufficiently improve the pre-election environment to be consistent with international standards.

We appreciated the opportunity to observe by-elections, but remain very concerned about harsh rhetoric, intimidation, and violent assaults in the lead-up to election day. Voters have the right to participate in political processes free from fear and violence.

We commend all the volunteers, observers, party agents, polling agents, police officers, and voters who made March 26 by-elections happen and took their time to invest in Zimbabwe’s democracy.

Salah Taunts Manchester United

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has given a damming verdict on Manchester United’s performance whenever the two sides meet, saying Ralph Rangnick’s side makes life easier for them.

The Egyptian scored twice last night, as Liverpool demolished an out-of-sorts United 4-0 at Anfield.

Having netted a hat-trick in the corresponding fixture at Old Trafford in October, Salah became the first ever player to score five goals against United in a single Premier League campaign.

In his post-match interview, the former AS Roma star was asked how they have dominated the rivalry this season and said: “They make our life easier, in the midfield and at the back, they always try to give us the ball in a one on one situation.”

“They make our life so much easier when we defend. We have a clean sheet here (at Anfield), we had a clean sheet there (at Old Trafford) so they make our life easy. We just go to the game, we just wanna score one goal, and go for the second and the third,” he added.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

SA Government Minister Defends Attacks On Foreigners

By- South Africa’s home affairs minister Aaron Motsoaledi has vowed to lock up all undocumented immigrants resident in that country.

His remarks come amid attacks on foreign nationals by vigilante groups under an operation code-named Dudula which claim to be targeting undocumented foreigners.

Motsoaledi was addressing an ANC regional conference in the Eastern Cape where the minister pledged that “unlike other coward ANC leaders”, his views on the scourge of undocumented foreign nationals running amok in the country will never be censored.

Motsoaledi said SA is the only sovereign country in the world where it is open season for “rascals” who have committed serious crimes in their countries of birth. He said:

One of the things that is contemporary in SA which is a big elephant in the room, and we are trying to run away from that elephant by keeping quiet, is the issue of immigration.

Why is the ANC keeping quiet and believing [this problem] will go away? It is not going to go away.

We must not be scared or embarrassed to mention the truth. I am in home affairs. I know what I am talking about.

Something is going wrong in our continent and SA is on the receiving end. When you talk, they take a big word and throw it at you and South Africans blink and run away. There is a word called xenophobia. Every time you try to show something is wrong, ‘xenophobia’.

We are the only country that accepts rascals. Even the UN is angry with us that SA has a tendency, because of something called democracy, to accept all the rascals of the world.

When people do wrong things in their countries, they run here. There is that guy from [Czech Republic] named Radovan Krejcir. He ran all the way to come and do nonsense here.

Motsoaledi said he was determined to see the undocumented foreigners thrown “in jail, locked in and the keys have been thrown away, then I will step down — only then.”

ZRP Statement On Kariba Accident

BY- The Zimbabwe Republic Police have confirmed the death of four people who died in a Nissan UD70 truck belonging to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) they were travelling in veered off the road.

The car crashed at the 40km peg along Makuti-Kariba Road on Independence Day at around 9.45pm.

“The names of victims will be announced in due course,” said police.
The latest accident has taken the holiday accident death toll to 48 from four accidents involving passengers being carried: the Chimanimani bus crash (38), Nyanga-Rwenya kombi crash (4), the Stallion Cruise bus along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway (2) and now the ZETDC crash.

Police will release the consolidated Easter and Independence road traffic accident statistics today, said national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
Asst Comm Nyathi said last week that this year’s Easter holiday was “a bad one” in terms of deaths in road accidents.
“We are seeing people dying every day on our roads and we are very concerned,” he said.
“Our biggest fear is that this year is going to be worse than last year considering that we already started the holiday with the Chimanimani horror crash that was declared a national disaster.”

Asst Comm Nyathi called on motorists to plan their trips well so that they travel during daylight as most accidents were happening at night.
The Chimanimani crash occurred on Thursday night when a bus carrying Zion Christian Church (ZCC) members was travelling to Masvingo for a church gathering.
Then on Good Friday afternoon, four members of the Mugodhi Apostolic Church coming from a church service in Murehwa perished when their Nissan Caravan overturned.

What You Need To Know About Noncommunicable Diseases

The NCD Compact will focus on five key areas of commitment:

saving, by 2030, the lives of 50 million people from dying prematurely of NCDs by implementing the most cost-effective measures to prevent and control NCDs;
protecting 1.7 billion people living with NCDs by ensuring that they have access to the medicines and care they need during humanitarian emergencies;
integrating NCDs within primary health care and universal health coverage;
comprehensive NCD surveillance and monitoring; and
meaningfully engaging 1.7 billion people living with NCDs and mental health conditions in policy-making and programming.

Mnangagwa Freezes In Front Of Villagers

The exchange went on for half-a-minute, until a supporter in the audience shouted: “ED Pfee!”

Biti Speaks On Foiled Mako Abduction

By- Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) deputy President, Tendai Biti, said the recent attempts by Zanu PF to abduct his party activist Makomborero Haruzivishe were embarrassing.

Biti denounced the Monday night attack saying President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration does not respect human rights.

 He said:

The latest attempt to kidnap Makomborero Haruzivishe is proof beyond reasonable doubt that the Mnangagwa regime is an incorrigible regime with no respect of human rights.

It will never reconcile itself to the vision of a stable, peaceful, united, democratic, free Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe we all want.

Unidentified men purporting to be police officers in plain clothes reportedly approached Haruzivishe, manhandled and cuffed him, trying to arrest him.

Haruzivishe was saved by members of the public.

In a Facebook live video, the activist is heard resisting the would-be abductors and demanding to see the men’s identity documents.

Haruzivishe later added on Twitter saying he does not “understand why I was attacked in a clear abduction attempt yesterday.”

Haruzivishe spent 10 months and 22 days in prison last year for allegedly inciting public violence after he staged a demonstration in Harare last year.

He was also facing several other criminal charges.

Mnangagwa Offers Cabbages To Teachers

In a tweet sent by ZBC, the government said teachers would be given a head of cabbage, a bottle of cooking oil and a loaf of bread per month.

SA Government Sanitises Xenophobia

By- The South Africa government said it would not be moved by claims that they were being xenophobic by kicking out undocumented foreigners.

SA home affairs minister Aaron Motsoaledi said he would continue to lock up all undocumented immigrants resident in that country.

Zimbos Return Home As Xenophobia Attacks Intensify

By- Dozens of Zimbabweans leaving in South Africa are repatriating their valuables, furniture and appliances, as xenophobic threats intensify.

Recent attacks in South Africa on immigrants by members of groups such as Operation Dudula, Dudula Movement and PutSouthAfricaFirst have resulted in the murder of a Zimbabwean national, Elvis Nyathi, who was beaten and set alight outside his home in Diepsloot.

Nyathi was buried last week in Bulawayo with the assistance of the government of Zimbabwe.

Groundup.org.za reports that more than five bus companies that operate cross-border trips to Zimbabwe every week say they have seen a huge increase in luggage being sent home.
Samson Chanetsa, the owner of Red Lion Bus Company, said he had seen an increase in goods being sent to Zimbabwe. He said:
We are carrying more luggage than passengers because people are afraid of falling victim to xenophobic violence. We used to travel with not more than 40 passengers per trip. We are now having a small number of travellers to Zimbabwe as people are spending more money on sending their luggage.
We are charging the same prices on luggage we charged last year. A double-door fridge remains at R1,500. This is the same price we have been charging in the festive season.
A driver, who did not want his employer to be named or to be named himself, said they were sometimes transporting less than 20 passengers while they were experiencing an unprecedented volume of luggage. He added, “That is where we are making our profit.”
Farisai Nyamadzawo, a domestic worker who has lived in Gqeberha for 15 years with her husband and their two children says they sent their household furniture and appliances to Zimbabwe by bus as they feared they could end up losing everything.

She added that they were not planning to relocate to Zimbabwe anytime soon because they are holders of the Zimbabwe Exemption Permits.
Kuda Munyoro, a general worker at a smallholding in Sea View, and has been in South Africa for three years, joined hands with four Zimbabwean colleagues and paid R12 000 for their furniture and goods to be loaded on a bus from Gqeberha train station to Zimbabwe.
He said he was yet to decide on whether to go home for good or to remain in South Africa adding that he will apply for an asylum permit.

Salah Taunts Manchester United After Emphatic Victory

Liverpool opened a two-point lead at the top of the Premier League after inflicting another comprehensive victory over Manchester United.

Mohamed Salah’s first two goals since February 19 – making it nine in his last six matches against Liverpool’s big rivals – were supplemented by strikes from Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane but the 4-0 scoreline hardly told the whole story.

This was the first time since October 2009 Liverpool had won three successive league matches against United, beaten 5-0 at Old Trafford earlier this season, and pulled them clear of Manchester City, who play Brighton on Wednesday night.

Liverpool supporters voice support for grieving Cristiano Ronaldo
United, who had one shot on target, have now conceded more Premier League goals this season than 18th-placed Burnley, and defeat was a further blow to their top-four hopes.

Such were their injury problems – with Cristiano Ronaldo given compassionate leave after the tragic death of his newborn son – Phil Jones made only his third appearance of the season.

By the time Paul Pogba added to those woes by coming off after 10 minutes his side were already behind.

However, injuries appeared the least of their worries. Getting a touch of the ball was the more pressing concern as Liverpool dominated from the off.

Their two banks of five were either too disjointed or too inert to have any effect on proceedings and, as a result, their hosts – led by the majestic Thiago Alcantara – seized an initiative they never relinquished.

“When we have these attackers in front of us and you see not only how they score but in defensive situations they want to get involved. It makes us perform,” said Thiago afterwards.

“It is one of the strongest performances at Anfield. We are not worried about where the goals come from. We are happy with all the strikers and how we play.”

Salah added: “In midfield they make our life easier. We have a clean sheet here and there. Once we get the first goal, we want the second and the third. It was a top performance by us and hopefully we continue.

Andy Mitten’s reaction from Anfield
Liverpool excellent performance rubs salt into rivals’ wounds
“I score many goals for this club. Sometimes you have bad luck. The most important thing is the team winning. We just need to focus on ourselves and the rest is not in our hands.”

The confidence with which Liverpool approached what used to be their key game of the season was exemplified by goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who beat Bruno Fernandes with a Cruyff turn on his own penalty spot in only the fourth minute.

Less than 60 seconds later United were behind as centre-forward Mane dropped deep and was given 10 yards of space to play a through-ball pass and Salah crossed for Diaz to score the 400th goal under Jurgen Klopp from close range.

Mane had a shot deflected wide before providing an even more sumptuous pass to tee up Salah to score with a confident finish.- The National

Mpandare Speaks On AFCON Draw

National teams General Manager Wellington Mpandare believes the Warriors will eventually take part in the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) 2023 qualifiers.

Zimbabwe is currently suspended from international competitions by FIFA but CAF gave a lifeline by putting the Warriors in the Afcon draw on condition that the sanction is lifted by May 15.

The Warriors were drawn in Group K alongside Morocco, South Africa and Liberia.

Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry called for patience as her adminstration seeks to find solutions to the ZIFA-SRC impasse and Mpandare is confident the former Olympic champion will eventually ensure the Warriors take part in the qualifiers.

“We have so much faith in what the Minister said when she met the portfolio committee. She doesn’t want the athletes to miss any tournament. We have faith that there will be a solution to the impasse,” he said.

“The players are 100% positive that they will participate, CAF raised the stakes when they included us in the draw. We can’t afford to fail ourselves as a nation,” added the former Gunners official.

Asked about last night’s draw, Mpandare said: “It’s a draw that needs us to prepare very well and make sure we have all our best players available. We played South Affica recently and we were missing the bulk of our foreign based players. With Liberia, they are bad travellers but difficult to beat at their home ground.”

“Then Morroco, we just need to beat them at home in fact if we win all our home games and get a point away we good to go thru. The challenge is with our home ground. If we play our home games away then it will be difficult to go through. Otherwise it’s a fair draw,” he added.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

We Will Thrash Warriors, Declares Bafana Bafana Legend

Lucas Radebe has picked Morocco as Bafana Bafana’s most difficult opponent in the 2023 Afcon Qualifiers and believes they can have an easy go on COSAFA rivals Zimbabwe.

South Africa were drawn in Group K alongside the Warriors, Morocco and Liberia.

This is the second time Bafana and Zimbabwe will face each after the two sides clashed in the World Cup qualifiers in late 2021.

And with the former emerging victorious over the two-legged fixture, Radebe feels the Warriors will be an easy target again considering that they have a lot of players plying their trade in South Africa.

“I think Morocco is the team to beat,” he said while reacting to the draw on SuperSport TV.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe are banned from international football and will only participate in the qualifiers if they meet FIFA’s demands at least two weeks before the games begin.

The NCD Compact will focus on five key areas of commitment:

saving, by 2030, the lives of 50 million people from dying prematurely of NCDs by implementing the most cost-effective measures to prevent and control NCDs;
protecting 1.7 billion people living with NCDs by ensuring that they have access to the medicines and care they need during humanitarian emergencies;
integrating NCDs within primary health care and universal health coverage;
comprehensive NCD surveillance and monitoring; and
meaningfully engaging 1.7 billion people living with NCDs and mental health conditions in policy-making and programming.

Liverpool Bury Red Devils

It’s Not Yet Uhuru In Zim !

Tinashe Sambiri| The Zanu PF leader Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa will never repent.

This was said by Citizens’ Coalition For Change vice president Hon Tendai Biti following the attempt by suspected government agents to abduct Makomborero Haruzivishe.

According to Hon Biti, Mr Mnangagwa’s administration has no respect for fundamental human rights.

“The latest attempt to kidnap
@MakomboreroH
is proof beyond reasonable doubt that the Mnangwagwa regime is an incorrigible regime with no respect of human rights.

It will never reconcile itself to the vision of a stable peaceful United democratic free Zimbabwe. The Zim we all want,” Hon Biti argued.

Prominent human rights defender Takudzwa Ngadziore also condemned the abduction attempt.

“It’s NOT YET UHURU
The headmaster’s of chaos & masters of darkness have once again tried to abduct my brother @MakomboreroH Even when it’s Independence Day, they’ve no shame. He spent more than 10 months Pre-Trial detention which is illegal & now this ?”

What’s To Celebrate; That Independence Replaced White Oppressors With Black Ones?

By Patrick Guramatunhu- On 18 April 2022 Zimbabweans should have been celebrating the country’s 42 years of independence. For the overwhelming majority, there was really no cause to celebrate, and many did not bother.

The penny has finally dropped that they were short changed. The fight for independence was a fight for freedom, liberty and human dignity; fight to be masters of ones’ own destiny.

The white colonial ethos was about denying the indigenous population their freedom liberty and human dignity for the sole purposed to subjugation and exploitation.

During the white colonial rule of Prime Minister Ian Smith, the late John Robertson, a renowned Zimbabwe Economist, reportedly gave Ian Smith a detailed plan to give blacks property rights including title deed for the rural peasant. The plan, if adopted, would be increased economic growth, and reduced the problem of land degradation by motivated the rural peasants to take better care of the land.

Ian Smith rejected the plan to economically empower the blacks for two reasons.
a) An economically impoverished black population was easily subjugated and exploited for the purposed of white economic prosperity than an economically empowered population.

b) It would just be a matter of time before the economically empowered black population
demand political empowerment, a meaningful say in the governance of the country.

Interestingly, John Robertson gave the same economic plan to Robert Mugabe, Prime Minister of Independent Zimbabwe. Mugabe also rejected the plan for the same reasons.
Whilst the whites had the common sense to follow some sound economic policies that allowed the national economy to thrive or be it the primary benefit of the white; Mugabe and company had no such common sense. Thus, before independence the country produced enough food to feed its own people with plenty leftover to be the breadbasket of the region, for example.

Twenty years after independence, Mugabe seized the white owned farms and gave them to his cronies; destroying the agricultural sector and with it the economy. 42 years of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption have left the country’s robust pre- independence economy in ruins.

Basic services such as education and health care have all but collapsed. 50% of the population now live in abject poverty. Life expectancy has plummeted from 68 years in 1980 to 34 years today!

On the political front, the whites denied the blacks a vote, period.

If Mugabe and his Zanu PF cronies had been allowed to have their wish, they would have imposed a de jure one-party state. They too had subscribed to the “One man, one vote!” as the rallying call for blacks before independence but would have discarded it without a second thought.

Zanu PF was forced to accept a multiparty democratic Lancaster House constitution. The party had a plan B to ensure electoral victory.

Contrary to the Lancaster House agreement, not only did Zanu PF fail to send many its freedom fighters to assembly points they remained active throughout the election campaigning period. The party’s campaign message was simple enough; if the party does not win, the bush war would continue.

Of course, the people voted to end the bush war! Zanu PF used the 1983 to 1987 Gukurahundi massacre coerce it main political rivalry, PF Zapu, led by the late Dr Joshua Nkomo, to disband, sign the 1987 Unity Accord and join Zanu PF to create the de
facto one-party state.

Whilst it is true that Zimbabwe has held regular elections, unlike other one-party states like China or North Korea which have completely dispensed with such niceties as elections. However, Zimbabwe has never ever held free, fair, and credible elections. The party has reduced the electorate into powerless medieval serfs beholden to overbearing Zanu PF landlords, especially the hapless rural povo.

Lest we forget, povo have played their part in the fight to end white colonial rule. And 42 years after independence all they ever got was the removal of the white oppressors only to be replaced by the black oppressors. What is there for them to celebrate?

The primary objective of the fight for independence was to deliver freedom, justice, and human dignity for all. Zanu PF narrative has the removal of the white colonialists from power as the sole purpose to hide the party’s failure to deliver the set objectives. And to justify its own tyrannical rule,

Zanu PF has the former colonialists using the opposition to threaten the country’s independence and sovereignty.

It is unforgivable that 42 years after independence, in this day and age, millions of our people are still having to fight for such basic rights as property rights and the right to a meaningful vote.

The very fact that some people are still celebrating the removal of the white colonialists as the great achievement of the fight for independence shows the lack of ambition and imagination.

Visiting 3yr Old Boy Drowns

TJ Mathe

By A Correspondent- TJ Mathe, a three-year-old boy from Knightswood, Glasgow, drowned in rainwater in an unused pool in his grandparents’ garden on March 30.

TJ tragically died in Zimbabwe on March 30.

The Knightswood Early Years Centre pupil had travelled to the southern African country without his mum and dad on March 26 to meet his gran and grandad for the first time.

His parents Edwin and Medina Mathe were unable to go on the trip with him due to immigration constraints, so TJ flew over with his uncle.

Edwin, who works at Gartnavel Hospital, said their lives have been turned upside down by the death of their ‘precious’ little boy who has been described as ‘their world.’ He added:

Some days are better. Some are not so good. Our memories of our son are helping us through.

Medina’s cousin Tichawona Dauramanzi said the couple is heartbroken. He told the Daily Record:

They are absolutely devastated. TJ was their life. He was so precious to them.

Their whole world revolved around TJ and what’s happened has absolutely shattered them. He was their only child and they loved him dearly. We all did.

TJ’s death has shocked and saddened all of us. It’s a tragic, very sad situation.

Because of issues with Edwin and Medina’s Visas they weren’t able to travel with TJ and now they haven’t been able go over to be with their boy or to find out what exactly happened. All they know is what we have been told on the phone.

Tichawona said a post-mortem examination was carried out and TJ’s cause of death was put down as an accidental drowning.

He added that the kids were playing around an unused pool and when TJ hadn’t been seen for a little while, family members started to look for him only to find him in the pool.

Gemma Garbett, TJ’s keyworker at Knightswood Early Years Centre set up a fundraising page to help raise money to bring his body home to Scotland.

TJ’s body is to be flown home to Scotland this Wednesday after about £3 700 has been raised.

Tichawona said the family have been overwhelmed by the community’s generosity.

Elephants’ Invasion Haunts Bubi Villagers

By A Correspondent- Bubi villagers in Matabeleland North province are living in fear after a herd of elephants invaded the area.

Bubi MP Sonny Mguni (Zanu-PF) yesterday told Southern Eye that the villagers now feel unsafe due to the presence of jumbos in their area.

“There is a problem of elephants in some wards in Bubi district. In Bona (ward 21), Kenelworth (ward 19), Shimmers Plots (ward 12), Macdonald plots, Mhlotshana and Sabelweni. The elephants have left villagers counting their losses after damaging crops,” Mguni said.

“The villagers have reported that the elephants could number up to 70 or 90. The issue has now been reported to the Department of Wildlife and I understand hunters are on the ground looking for the jumbos and we hope they will capture them,” he said.

Indications are that despite the damages caused to crops and property by the jumbos, no deaths of humans have been recorded.

Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management (ZimParks) spokesperson Tinashe Farawo could not be reached for comments yesterday.

Recently, Farawo expressed concern over increases in human-wildlife conflicts.

Last June, ZimParks stated that they had recorded 30 cases of deaths of people trampled by elephants.

Farawo said elephants escape from game parks and invade human territories in search of food and water.

Next Step For Zimbabwe Should Be Eectoral Reforms

By Deborah Harry | The recent by-elections have shown us that we are still a long way from a free and fair election.

Days and weeks before the actual election itself, there were several reports of CCC supporters being attacked, intimidated, and arrested on false criminal charges. Even more tragic news was the killing of a man from CCC in Kwekwe by Zanu supporters.

Weeks after the by election, we continue to receive news of CCC campaigners being rounded up by police and arrested for campaigning. This is not right. This leopard doesn’t seem to have changed its spots.

Electoral reforms are needed. Rigging an election is an act that shows just how much a government does not care about its people’s views, preferences or needs. It is one thing that proves without a doubt that we are not a democracy.

We, the people want democracy, that is obvious; but the few men in charge and their clans are opposed to democracy the way evil is repelled by good. Since we are the only ones who want democracy, we should campaign for electoral reforms because our lives depend on this.

As people we need to all start talking about electoral reforms in a big and consistent way.

The strong CCC MPs in parliamentary will definitely raise the issue, and I think we should support them by putting light on the issue on social media and via demos around the world so that the international community can see for themselves that Zanu are doing their best to rig elections again.

Its simple. The more we talk about the need for electoral reforms especially on social media, the more likely the international community will get to know about our problems. Not only that, but we also need to expose the things that Zanu are doing right now towards rigging the election.

All the culprits involved in vote rigging should be named and shamed in public. The 2023 general election is not far away. We are all fed up of the situation in Zimbabwe.

But we can’t just keep saying we are fed up, we have to do something about it, starting with the small things like raising awareness of problems to the world and pushing for solutions.

ZACC Investigation Leaves Mazowe Communities Baffled

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission has left people of Mazowe baffled after it completed its corruption investigations on Mazowe Rural District Council (MRDC) and has never disclosed its findings but has instead handed over its report to MRDC officials.

ZACC has been investigating and arresting council officials in Mashonaland  Central province with Guruve, Muzarabani, Bindura and Mvurwi chief executive officers being dragged to court but on Mazowe nothing was actioned.

ZACC spokesperson John Makamure refused to comment directing questions to his information  department.

Residents who spoke to Bulawayo24.com suspect collusion between ZACC and MRDC officials.

We are worried with ZACC it was conducting investigations at MRDC but nothing was communicated to us we are only told that the report was left  at council how is that possible when they are supposed to deal with the council but they claim to leave them their report,” lamented Sekai Gokomere.

“We suspect the people involved in the corrupt activities at MRDC are dining with ZACC,” Rodrick Tsunga said.

However, some ZANU PF councillors in Mazowe are accusing council chairman John Mudzonga and Mazowe West legislator Kazembe Kazembe of illegally parcelling stands to ZANU PF youths who were instrumental in the provincial elections.

The disgruntled councillors told Bulawayo24.com that an urgent full council meeting has been called to address the issue.

“We are not happy very few people are benefiting hence an urgent meeting has been called this nonsense should stop,” fumed the councillors.

“Re-instate Sacked Cop Or Go To Jail”: High Court Tells Police Boss

By A Correspondent- The High Court has given police commissioner-general Godwin Matanga seven days to re-instate a sacked police officer or go to prison for 90 days for contempt of court.

Constable Sikhathazile Moyo was fired from the service following a recommendation by the ZRP board president.

She was, however, reinstated by the High Court in 2020 when Justice Clement Phiri directed her reinstatement without loss of salary and benefits.

Efforts to get her reinstated were blocked, allegedly after Matanga ignored the court order.

This prompted Moyo to return to the High Court, this time applying for Matanga to be held in contempt.

Justice David Mangota of the Harare High Court upheld her request, warning Matamga he faces prison for ignoring a court order.

“The application for contempt of court be and is hereby granted. The respondents are hereby ordered to purge their contempt by complying with paragraph four of the court order… within seven days from the date of this order,” the order granted by Justice Mangota says.

“In the event that the respondents have failed to comply with paragraph 2 above, they are hereby held in contempt of court and are hereby committed to civil imprisonment for a period of 90 days. The respondents are ordered to pay costs of suit on a punitive scale.”

ZRP staff officer human resources administration Josiah Chideme had opposed Moyo’s application. He accused Moyo of concealing information he claimed would have led to a different outcome.

Chideme said in an affidavit: “I humbly submit that this application is bad at law. The applicant has not placed sufficient and correct information before this court for it to exercise its discretion judiciously.

The applicant intends to mislead the honourable court into portraying an image that the respondents are in contempt of the court order. I therefore wish to categorically put the record straight as to what actually transpired after the court order was issued.

“After being served with the court order, the applicant was invited to come for her reinstatement. The communication was made to her station, Mukumbura, to contact her about the process of reinstatement. It was at that time that we received communication to the effect that the applicant was now a full time politician.

In actual fact, she had contested under MDC Alliance ticket during the 2018 elections whereupon she lost to Noveti Muponora of Zanu-PF. With this information and cognisance of the Constitution of Zimbabwe that states that no member of the civil service must be an office bearer of a political party, it was found undesirable and unlawful that she be reinstated. In any event, she had not disclosed this fact when she was granted the order by judge.

“I therefore conclude that the information placed by the applicant is a mere attempt to mislead the court instead of assisting the court to reach a judicious decision. It is a mere abuse of the court process.”-NewZimbabwe

Biltrans Transport Truck Driver Still Missing

By A Correspondent- The Biltrans Transport truck driver Masimba Murombo (48), who disappeared last week en route to Harare from Chirundu, is still missing and police are still investigating the matter.

Following his alleged hijacking, fellow truck drivers have come out guns blazing saying the case exposed the poor working conditions of haulage truck drivers in the country and region.

Murombo, a father of six, went missing last Friday. While his truck was recovered in Chegutu on Saturday and the copper consignment he was transporting was also recovered at a farm in the area, his whereabouts remain a mystery.

Chegutu Criminal Investigations Department is said to be still investigating the case.

According to cross-border drivers, Murombo’s case has exposed poor working conditions for those transporting copper from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia to South Africa.

Truck driver Steven Nyamasve blamed Biltrans Transport for neglecting its workers.

‘‘Another truck driver was arrested in DRC and placed in filthy cells for more than a month without getting assistance from his company. He was only saved by some drivers who went on strike against the company called Upman in order to force it to act and save him,” the truck driver said.

Benjamin Katemazondo alleged that Biltrans Transport does not pay its drivers well.

“The bosses there must feel the heat of exploitation, underpayment and taking drivers for granted,” he said.

Bertha Mabwe said truck drivers transported millions worth of goods, including copper, and yet they were underpaid.

Another truck driver, Tempy Maromo, said Murombo was not supposed to have travelled alone at night.

Most truck drivers, who spoke to NewsDay, said Murombo was supposed travel in a convoy with other truckers, instead of travelling alone.

The Murombo family spokesperson, Weston Murombo yesterday confirmed that although the truck and copper were recovered, their relative was still missing. ‘‘Our relative is still unaccounted for although police are still investigating the matter,” Weston said.

Mashonaland West provincial spokesperson Inspector Margaret Chitove said she was yet to get all the facts on the matter.

Attempts to get a comment from Biltrans Transport were fruitless as their number was not getting through.

Marondera Serial Killer’s Murder Cases Rise To 23

By A Correspondent- Charges against the Marondera serial rapist and killer have risen to 23 after Harare magistrate Yeukai Dzuda added three more counts of murder yesterday.

Bright Zhantali (30) was remanded in custody to April 29 pending indictment.

It is alleged that on July 17, 2020 at around 7pm, Zhantali approached the now-deceased female, Priscilla Chidakwa (24), who was a sex worker, and offered to pay her US$10 for the whole night.

He then lured her to Donnybrook Race Course in Mabvuku, Harare where he raped her once before strangling her. He threw her body in a trench.

Her corpse was discovered a day later by a passer-by who was walking back home from church and reported the matter to the police.

On the second count, on December 7, 2021 at around 1pm, the accused person approached Manyara Chisora of Ruwa under the guise that he was looking for a piece of land to rent.

When they went into her house to sign a lease agreement, Zhantali raped the deceased and murdered her by striking her three times with the back of an axe. He also stole her valuables.

The deceased’s daughter found the lifeless body of her mother in the bedroom. She alerted her aunt and the matter was reported to the police in Ruwa.

On the third charge, court papers stated that sometime in December 2021, Spiwe Nyamoto was at Double Jay Night Club in Mabvuku when she was approached by Zhantali, who hired her for the night.

The pair agreed to go near Mabvuku Sewerage Ponds, where he raped her and stabbed her to death. Zhantali stole some cash from her before disappearing from the scene. Her body was thrown into a sewerage pond.

Her body was discovered floating in sewage by a passer-by on December 26, 2021.

When the police went to the scene, two cellphones, which linked Zhantali to the murder, were recovered.

The accident resulted in the loss of lives and injuries.” ZIMRA said in a statement.

The authority added that it is working with the relevant authorities to assist affected staff members.

In a twet on Wednesday the Zimbabwe Revenue and Allied Workers Trade Union (ZIMRATU) said, “We are saddened by the loss of lives and injuries of our ZIMRA members in a road accident near Corona Shops along Masvingo-Harare Highway. They were traveling from Beitbridge to Harare on 19 April 2022.”

More details regarding the accident are still being investigated.

Mnangagwa Uses Govt Money To Win Marange Church Members

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has accorded the late Mutumwa Noah Taguta, who died this Monday, a State-assisted funeral in recognition of his contribution to the spiritual and material well-being of the nation.

In his message of condolences to the Taguta family, President Mnangagwa described Mutumwa Noah Taguta as a devout Christian and a staunch messenger of God, who transformed the Johanne Marange Apostolic Church into a strong, sub-regional movement of God’s faithfuls covering Southern, East and Central Africa.

“Such a massive movement of believers drawn from diverse nationalities and cultures required inspired leadership which only he alone could provide. We greatly admired his commitment to the Word and his exceptional leadership, through which our country Zimbabwe is now a well-known spiritual epicentre on the African Continent. I have very vivid memories of my visits to his Headquarters in Mafararikwa, in rural Marange which he transformed into a continental shrine and home to God’s faithfuls,” said President Mnangagwa.

The President noted that with very little persuasion, Mutumwa Taguta built a modern high school, which is a source of pride to the church, the community and government.

“Today children and families in the Church and beyond, accept education and have embraced modern medical practices, including vaccination programmes. Mutumwa Noah was singularly responsible for this transformation which consolidated the Church’s standing as a movement associated with the liberation of our Country.”

“Against age-old practices and set traditions, he challenged archaic outlooks to modernise the Church until it embraced secular education, modern medical practices and a better, enlightened life for the girl-child in the Church.

With very little persuasion, he built a modern High School which is a source of pride to the Church, the Community and Government.

President Mnangagwa said he also knew the late as a passionate farmer who approached government for land, which he proceeded to put to full, productive use, thus contributing to the overall effort towards national food security.

“That tradition of agricultural industry and productivity on a commercial scale, is now firmly established in the Church which is able to meet its food requirements, in addition to a marketable surplus. We applaud his leadership which went beyond the spiritual realm, to encompass the secular, thus ministering to a complete human being.”

He said Mutumwa Taguta’s leadership went beyond the spiritual realm, to encompass the secular, thus ministering to a complete human being, also describing him as a spiritual father of the nation.

“I Am Coming For You”: SA Home Affairs Minister Tells Undocumented Foreigners

By A Correspondent- South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs Aaron Motsoaledi has launched a furious attack on undocumented foreigners, warning that he is coming for all of them.

The minister, who has taken a hardline stance on immigration, warned that he will only step down from his current role once he has locked up all undocumented foreigners in the country.

The firebrand minister also scoffed at claims of xenophobia, arguing that people from all over the world are taking advantage of South Africa’s lax immigration policies.

Speaking at an ANC regional conference in the Eastern Cape, Motsoaledi said,

“One of the things that is contemporary in SA, which is a big elephant in the room, and we are trying to run away from that elephant by keeping quiet, is the issue of immigration,” said Motsoaledi.

“Why is the ANC keeping quiet and believing [this problem] will go away? It is not going to go away.

“We must not be scared or embarrassed to mention the truth. I am in home affairs. I know what I am talking about.
