Ferocious Floods Hit Zimbabwe

The persistent rains falling countrywide have seen the usual seasonal flooding in some areas and blocked drains in urban areas. The rainy season started late, but since New Year rain has been falling persistently in many areas with the Meteorological Services Department forecasting more, and warning of localised rains in excess of 30mm along the main watershed and the Eastern Highlands, with lightning, strong winds and hailstorms expected in some areas. The Department of Civil Protection (DCP) in Harare has developed a national contingency plan as part of its preparedness to help people in communities in cases of flooding and natural disasters across the country.

The plan approved by Cabinet in November last year is the blueprint that the Government and partners are using to respond to both meteorological and human-induced disasters. The DCP in Mashonaland Central has said it is on high alert following an incident of flooding in Muzarabani last week where a village head from Soda Village was marooned. Provincial development coordinator Mr Timothy Maregere said Mr Soda was evacuated and airlifted to Harare. All civil protection units across the province have been restocked and are ready to deal with any incidents.

The province has also seen a number of structures damaged by hailstorms and wind since the beginning of the rainy season. In Mashonaland Central, low-lying areas such as Muzarabani and Mbire are prone to floods, and see these almost every season. Attempts over the years to get people to at least have their houses on higher ground have been resisted with many willing to take risks to be nearer to their fields.

In the Midlands, heavy rains that have been recorded in Gweru since Monday resulted in most suburbs around the city being affected by flash floods. Blocked storm water drains, a major problem in almost all urban areas as people continue to drop litter in the streets, is seen as the major cause of the flooding. Yesterday morning several buildings including OK supermarket in Gweru CBD had their goods and other properties drenched in water while some residents in western suburbs that included Mkoba 1, 5, 9, 11 and Woodlands had to temporarily abandon their properties as flowing water found its way into houses. Midlands Provincial Development Coordinator, Mr Abiot Maronge yesterday toured the affected areas to assess the situation. Mr Maronge said while the CPU was working on measures to provide the affected families with food and temporary shelter, the local authority should work on addressing some drainage systems and clear water runways to avoid flooding. “It is the duty of the local authority to always make sure that they clear drains and avoid such floods some of which are due to human error,” he said In Beitbridge Malusungane, Tshamnangana and Kwalu primary schools had their classroom blocks and staff houses damaged by heavy storms in Ward 11 last week.

Beitbridge chairperson for the Department of Civil Protection, Mrs Sikhangazile Mafu-Moyo who is also the District Development Coordinator, said 46 homesteads were also affected by heavy rains She said 42 houses in Ward 11, two in Ward 12, and one in Ward 8 under Beitbridge West Constituency were destroyed. “The Ward Civil Protection Committees are busy assessing the damage and the needs on the ground,” said Mrs Mafu-Moyo. “However, we have delivered tents and groceries to a family of eight in Siyoka area, Ward 12, where a hut was struck by a bolt of lightning. We will mobilise resources for other families based on the assessment report from the ward committees”. She said so far no human life had been lost and that assessments were continuing in other parts of the district. The officials said they had also sent early warning messages to communities living in low-lying areas and near streams, rivers and water bodies. In Matabeleland North, heavy rains that have been falling in Victoria Falls have exposed the municipality’s poor drainage system after flash floods swept through houses and damaged roads in Mkhosana suburb. While no fatalities or serious destruction of infrastructure have been reported, residents lost groceries and other property that got submerged in water which in some cases was at knee level.

Some were stuck indoors as they could not go out of their houses, which were surrounded by water. There are few storm drains in Mkhosana and water flows on the surface whenever it rains. Poor drainage is a major concern which residents even raised during budget consultation meetings. Department of Civil Protection director Mr Nathan Nkomo said the national contingency plan was developed following the regional weather forecast which predicted normal to above normal rainfall. “The month of October 2021 saw the onset of the rainfall season which has been characterised by heavy rains and flash floods in various parts of the country,” he said. “Urban areas have not been spared given the damages witnessed in all major cities. Social amenities infrastructure damaged as a result of the heavy rains includes schools and clinics have also been destroyed by the rains.

“Civil Protection Committees have been given the task of conducting damage assessments in order to ascertain immediate needs of affected households as well as costing of damages to social infrastructure to facilitate mobilisation of resources to undertake repairs.” Mr Nkomo said submissions from provinces where damages have been reported would be received as rapid damage assessments were being conducted. He said reports submitted to date indicated that most houses damaged by adverse weather conditions were built using poor building materials of pole and dagga while poor workmanship on some houses built with brick and mortar resulted in increased vulnerability to harsh weather conditions.

Zim Army Starts Own Phone Network | ARE YOU BUYING THEIR SERVICE?

Zimbabwe Military army: file copy

The Zimbabwe National Army has started its own ground phone network.

While the state media said this is a partnership with government owned paratatal, TelOne, the development signals a total militarisation of the state entity.

According to academic, Enock Ndawana, “the prioritisation of military solutions to every security problem works to safeguard the governing elite but worsens instead of addressing the citizens’ problems with far-reaching implications for human and state security: For human security to be realised, Zimbabwe needs to discontinue militarised governance and capacitate responsible government ministries and departments.

On full implementation, the land-based network will enable the nation to experience lower network costs, increased accessibility, complete portability, higher scalability, clearer voice quality, multi-tasking and flexibility with softphones.

The partnership will implement a dedicated internet system, IP/PBX with gateways, advanced IP handsets, ordinary handsets, digital switchboards and Wi-Fi access points to provide ubiquitous internet service to all the official sites.

The network modernisation is targeted to modify 58 network sites countrywide before year end. Speaking during the commissioning of six complete network sites at the Zimbabwe Military Academy in Gweru last week, TelOne acting managing director, Mr Joseph Machiva, said the project will enable Government and its departments to fully use the capabilities that come with this installed modern network.

“We are excited that these service offerings, pave way for futuristic services such as video conferencing as previously demonstrated. These add on services are very key as they allow Government and its departments to fully utilise the capabilities that come with this installed modern network,” he said. “Once this modern network is installed all the sites that are being commissioned today and any future sites, can be linked together to allow extension-to-extension calling regardless of location throughout the network.”

ZNA commandant, Colonel Arnold Gumbo, who was representing commander ZNA Lieutenant-General David Sigauke, said communication plays a pivotal role in everyday life and its importance cannot be over-emphasised. “I would like to thank all of you present here today for your positive contributions towards the successful implementation of these completed projects,” he said. Col Gumbo said as the digital world continue to gain recognition, any organisation that ignores digital communication risks failure. “Communication run our lives in these modern times without which an organisation will not function, thus we thrive to keep abreast with emerging technologies to march in step with the ever-changing ICT world.” – state media/additional reporting.

Police Arrest MDC Alliance Official For 2018 ” Crime”

Former MDC MP for Bikita West, Heya Shoko has been arrested for insulting a political opponent by calling his haircut zibhibho.

Shoko was arrested after slighting Charles Musimiki (Zanu PF) by telling him that his haircut was not for adults. He described Musimuki’s haircut as zibhibho (box cut) not to be donned by old people like him, according to information obtained by The Mirror.

Shoko is being charged for breaching the Post and Telecommunications Act after being reported to CID Law and Order in Masvingo by an offended Musimuki.

Shoko allegedly wrote in a WhatsApp group Bikita West 2018 & Beyond; “Iko murume mukuru anogerwa zibhibho here? (Is it proper for an old man to don box cut?)”.

Musimiki was an aspiring MP for MDC in Zaka West but is now Zanu PF, The Mirror was told.

A former teacher at Gwindingwi High School in Bikita, Musimiki is known for his political flip-flopping. He recently defected to Zanu PF for the second time amid pomp and fanfare at the Zanu PF headquarters.

He first crossed the floor to the ruling party in 2001. After his first defection Musimiki later skipped the country into neighbouring South Africa and was part of the group that formed the controversial MDC Veteran Activists Association (MDCVAA) which is not formally recognised by the party itself.

Shoko is denying ever insulting Musimiki but said he only disputed him on WhatsApp that he was one of the founding members of MDC. “I only told him that he was lying that he is one of the founding members of MDC while addressing Zanu PF rallies.

“We co-opted Musimiki into MDC way after it was formed and initiated that he contests in Zaka West representing people living with disabilities. He was never in MDC structures. Ask him if he was an MDC member at any given time.

“I was the provincial organising secretary for Masvingo and I know he was never in the structures. He was Zanu PF through and through, so I am surprised by the hullabaloo about the defection. That guy was never an MDC member. It’s not about the issue of Zibhibho, but he felt exposed,” said Shoko.

“Being a founding member or in MDC structures is neither here nor there, the bottom line is he insulted me on social media. Saying Zibhibho is a personal attack on me. I think the matter will be decided by the courts, so I have nothing more to comment on this issue,” said Musimiki.- Masvingo Mirror

Elephants Overcome Equatorial Guinea

Ivory Coast captain Max Gradel scored a spectacular winner as the Elephants narrowly beat Equatorial Guinea 1-0 in their Africa Cup of Nations opener.

Ex-Bournemouth and Leeds forward Gradel lashed the two-time champions ahead from 20 yards with the outside of his right foot just five minutes in.

Equatorial Guinea had chances to level but Iban Salvador sliced their best one horribly wide from seven yards.

Badra Ali Sangare later saved from Emilio Nsue as Ivory Coast held out.

Patrice Beaumelle’s side go top of Group E after defending champions Algeria drew with Sierra Leone on Tuesday.

Equatorial Guinea were unhappy with Gradel’s opener in Douala, appealing for a foul on Jose Machin in the build-up, but referee Redouane Jiyed confirmed the goal would stand after consulting his pitchside monitor.

Ibrahim Sangare sent an unmarked header over as Ivory Coast threatened to double their lead. But the Equatoguineans, who have qualified for the tournament by right for the first time in their history – with their two previous appearances courtesy of being a home nation – grew in stature.

A Basilio Ndong shot was thwarted by Elephants keeper Badra – standing in for first-choice stopper Sylvain Gbohouo after he was banned on the eve of the tournament for an alleged doping violation – while Machin’s sweetly-struck volley from 25 yards flew just wide.

They were left, however, to rue the costly miss from Salvador in the second half and Nicolas Pepe could have settled it, only for Equatorial Guinea keeper Manuel Sapunga Mbara to thwart the Arsenal forward with a fine fingertip save.

Substitute Wilfried Zaha also steered wastefully wide late on for Ivory Coast, but it was far from a statement performance from a side that last won the trophy in 2015, against opponents ranked 58 places below them.- BBC

After The Storm Unite And Move On ZANU PF Is United

BY DR MASIMBA MAVAZA | We are living in the times of disquiet. A great many people fear getting trampled, thwarted, left behind. Corrupt cadres take their jobs. Stubborn selfish senior members take their dignity.

Demagogues take their rights. Warlords and land barons take their lives. Unprincipled leaders fuel divisions and take their future.

Dr Masimba Mavaza

And yet people believe in the spirit and ideas that bring us together as party loyalists. They believe in the leadership of Emerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa. But do they believe in you as a provincial executive member? Are you in a position because of the people? Do they believe you as a leader, you will put people first? Because we, the leaders, must deliver for the sake of our party.

Common ideals and hope, and the legacy of our freedom unite the members of the party and promote that association between them which, has contributed significantly to the cause of human freedom.
This Country was born of the endeavours of countless men and women from different provinces who, over the decades, have pursued the aims of the preservation of peace between each other, equality of justice for all before the law and the right of the Zimbabweans to live their lives in freedom and security. To exercise their right to vote in any election without unfairness.

The constitution of the party and indeed that of the country was framed with a view to giving expression to these great purposes and so forming a fitting memorial to the men and women whose toil and sacrifices turned those ideas into reality of faith for the citizens of Zimbabwe. We are still far from the achievement of the ideals which we have mentioned but we must not be discouraged. The peoples of the Zimbabwe expect ZANU PF to persevere in its efforts.

The president by removing Mudha from Office he has shown that there are no sacred cows in the party. He hit the nail on the head with devastating accuracy. Further the president should descend upon other political culprits with little mercy other wise we will pay the ultimate price what an expensive luxury we can ill afford at this juncture.

We must remember that Midlands must lead by example and any poor election performance would have dangerous ripple effects elsewhere nothing short of calling it extrapolative.

Strategically Midlands is our political centre of gravity and should not be lost. Once we negligently and carelessly lose it then we have a mammoth task ahead to recoup trust and confidence. Fundamental issue is to instill discipline and unity of forcued purpose.

Any efforts of personalising the party must be seen as the most grievous sin. Abuse of power or abuse of authority, in the form of “malfeasance in office” or “official abuse of power”, is the commission of an unlawful act, done in an official capacity, which affects the performance of official duties. Malfeasance in office is often a just cause for removal of an elected official by statute or recall. Officials who utilize abuse of power are often those who exploit the ability to use corruption in their advantage.

The president did not hesitate to wield the axe. What we need now is to hold hands and move on as one.
Moving forward after a setback, especially an emotional one, can be quite a challenge. When we encounter a major life situation, we can be stripped of our energy and we need to regroup. What tools can we use to help us regroup? How can we be sure that we take that situation, learn from it, and become better because of it? How we handle stress and major setbacks is entirely up to us.

The actions of some leaders dented the faith of many in our party democracy.

But now we need to hold hands and move on. It is entirely up to us, how we rebound from these issues is completely under our control. In any negative situation, there is usually some good along with the more pervasive bad. Though it may not be easy to look for the good in a moment of conflict or anger, there is usually time for reflection where we can uncover the good or the positives that come from a negative situation. The key for all of us is to take the time to look for the good so something positive can be pulled from any negative situation.
As ZANU PF we must be able to find the good within the bad we must use the provincial elections as motivation/fuel. Every situation, whether it’s good or bad, provides energy. How you interpret and choose to use that energy is entirely up to you. Take the energy produced by your negative situation and use it as fuel to power yourself forward for the benefit of the party.

We must Learn from the experience and Realize the purpose of the setback in our overall life plan. Whether you believe in your destiny being predetermined or things happening for a reason, something occured during your setback that positively positioned you for the future. At the time the setback may have been a serious cause of stress but, in time, you realized (or will come to realize) that it happened for a reason and made you better because of it. We must always remember that people are looking the world is watching.
ZANU PF is a party which form a free association of fully independent individuals and which have widely different histories, cultures and traditions but united with blood shed by our brothers sisters and parents.

The people of Zimbabwe regard their continuing association with one another and joint service to their high ideals as still an essential contribution to country’s peace and justice. They add and will continue to add to a tried element of strength, and of accumulated experience.

ZANU PF is party dedicated to peace, and development. The Province which house the president is Midlands. This is a greatest honour for Midlands and it must lead honourably. In it men and women from all these provinces– large or small, powerful or weak – can exercise an influence that might otherwise be denied them. The Midlands also originates and inspires a wide range of social and economic activities for the benefit of the whole nation.

As the honoured province we must behave honourably. We must be united. Unity is an important element for the society we live in, as we all together form this whole nation. “Strength is always with the Unity” is a well-known phrase and it is totally true. Unity represents togetherness and being there for each other like we all are one. Therefore, in unity, everyone stands together for every big and small problem. People fight over insignificant and stupid things and in the end, they end up with loneliness and emptiness.
People help and support each other. This we must do as ZANU PF.It is a true fact that when we stay in unity then we may get guidance from others, for both personal and professional matters including the solutions also we can only win as one.

Staying in unity is always good for our growth and as well as for the development of the nation. Moreover, it is also good for the members of the party in particular and all-round development of our members.

We must remember that When we work or perform any task together, we get motivated and encouraged to work harder with each other. Also, we motivate each other to achieve the goals and this teamwork results in a great motivational factor.

Whenever we work together as a team, we easily accomplish superior goals which are sometimes not possible alone.
Fighting any mission becomes much easier when we have a number of people involved in the mission.

Unity can only be achieved when an individual is ready to sacrifice his/her individual interests and work for the betterment of the party and country as a whole with coordination. Undoubtedly the spirit of unity should be inborn. The party can play an essential role in the process of building unity among the public.

The future of our party will be determined, not only by the degree to which its members observe strictly the provisions of the constitution and cooperate in its practical activities, but also by the strength of its people’s devotion to the pursuit of those great ideals to which we are prepared to die for.
When justice and respect for obligations are firmly established, ZANU PF will more confidently achieve the goal of a party at peace, law abiding and prosperous for which men and women have striven so long and which is the heart’s desire of every province here represented.

We have By-elections coming soon let us forget our fights. Let us come together and move on. Let us remain united. United we stand divided we fall.

Let us all put down our ego and fight own.

ZANU PF YOU AND ME HAVE WORK TO DO.

Court Forces Promotor To Release Chibaba’s Car

By- Music promoter Patson Chimbodza, also known as Chipaz Promotions, has surrendered the late Zimdancehall artiste’s Soul Jah Love’s car, a BMW X5, to his relatives.

Chipaz released the car after the Master of High Court ordered him to do so.

Soul Jah Love left behind a nearly complete house, a residential stand in Stoneridge and four vehicles, including the one that was in Chimbodza’s possession as well as a Ford Explorer, Toyota Hiace and a Honda Illusion.

The late artiste’s friend, Batsirai Nyanungo, who was in possession of the Honda Illusion, has also surrendered the vehicle to Soul Jah Love’s family.

Soul Jah Love, born Soul Musaka, died in February 2021, leaving some of his assets and musical compositions in different hands.

His sister, Caroline Musaka, said after the intervention of the Master of High Court, the two vehicles have been handed over to the family. She said:

Finally, the cars are back, but unfortunately, we are still facing resistance from various producers who are profiteering from Soul’s music without our consent.

We have been making frantic efforts to bar them from doing that. Lawyers and the Master of High Court have even written letters to them, but they still disregard.

We do not have a choice now save to wait for the law to take its course.

Why Regular Cervical Cancer Screening ?

Screening for cervical cancer

All adult women should undergo periodic cervical cancer screening.

Screening aims to detect precancerous lesions, that is, abnormalities in the cells of the cervix, which, if left untreated, can develop into cervical cancer. When found, precancerous lesions must be treated.

Screening and treatment of precancerous lesions, also referred to as “secondary prevention” is the second pillar of the recommended WHO’s comprehensive approach to cervical cancer. There are a number of recommended screening and treatment options.

The Global strategy to accelerate the elimination of cervical cancer as a public health problem recommends that 70% of women are screened with high-performance tests by ages 35 and 45 years.

HPV vaccination (primary prevention) and cervical cancer screening, with treatment of precancerous lesions must be scaled up together in low- and middle-income countries.

Screening might also result in cervical cancer diagnosis. Detection of cancer and treatment must be done together (tertiary prevention), as cervical cancer can be treated effectively, particularly if detected early.

Chinhoyi – There is chaos as villagers under Kraalhead Hofisi are living in fear of being duped by Chief Magonde’s son Lenard who alleged requested every person to pay $5 or have cattle tagged for them to access inputs.

Chief Justice Luke Malaba’s SOJA Under Spotlight

By A Correspondent- Human Rights NGO Forum executive director Musa Kika says the independence of the judiciary and equality before the law, not over-emphasis on the use of information communication technology (ICT), are important in fostering a democratic society.

Kika was reacting to Chief Justice Luke Malaba’s State Of the Judiciary Address (SOJA) delivered on Monday to mark the opening of the 2022 legal year.

In his SOJA, Malaba said the Integrated Electronic Case Management System (IECMS) was invaluable to enhance access to the justice system and buttress the rule of law.

However, Kika argued that by emphasizing the new e-filing system, Malaba ignored real issues affecting the country’s justice delivery system as ICT alone cannot be the anchor to the rule of law. Said Kika:

Thus, while the development of a culture of efficiency in the administration of justice is crucial, the enhancement, growth or enhancement, efficacy, and long-term survival of the rule of law in a constitutional democracy cannot be sustained by digitisation alone.

The importance of fostering public confidence in the sanctity and independence of the judiciary is what is more important.

The efficiency of the justice delivery system should also be guaranteed to safeguard the rights of a citizen through appointment and independence of the Judiciary.

Of the three branches of government, it is the Judiciary that carries the greatest burden to ensure that rule of law prevails.  The rule of law is the hallmark of any civilized and democratic society

“ZBC Presenter Lured T Freddy With Nudes”: Court Hears

By A Correspondent- Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) presenter Rutendo Makuti used nude pictures, audios and suggestive text messages to seduce Harare-based pastor Tapiwa Freddy, the cleric’s lawyers argued before a Harare magistrate on Thursday.

During cross-examination, Freddy’s defence counsel said Makuti consented to intimacy and demanded sex from the preacher.

The nude pictures, audio and text messages were produced in court and the defence counsel said the mobile number used to send the audios belongs to Makuti.

However, Makuti said she was not the one in possession of the phone at the material time.

Freddy is being represented by Everson Chatambudza and Jivas Mudimu.

The lawyers asked Makuti why she was sending audios asking for a kiss and sex from Freddy.

Makuti denied the allegations saying she never sent nude pictures to Freddy but they were taken from her phone.

She said:

I know the picture and it was taken by my husband while I was bathing. As for the other pictures, I don’t know. [It] was taken when my husband was alive and we were in Nyanga.

ERC Statement On By- Elections Proclamations

The Election Resource Centre (ERC) has called on the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to proclaim local authority by-elections after President Emmerson Mnangagwa proclaimed 26 March 2022 as the day for by-elections to fill in vacant National Assembly seats.

We publish below a statement issued by the ERC on Wednesday on the proclamation of by-elections:

The Election Resource Centre (ERC) welcomes proclamation 26 March 2022 as the day for by-elections through Statutory Instrument 1 of 2022 by the President of Zimbabwe.

The SI 1 of 2022 orders election to fill vacant parliamentary seats as provided for in section 38 of the Electoral Act.

The ERC has long maintained that the Statutory Instrument 225A of 2020 which had suspended by-elections was illegal.

Essentially, this explains the President’s proclamation of by-elections, setting aside SI225A of 2020.

The ERC now calls on the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to proclaim the outstanding local authority by-elections according to Electoral Act Section 121 (1) b) (ii).

ERC would like to urge the electoral commission to take the opportunity of the 26 of March 2022 by-elections to implement the administrative reforms that do not require the legislature or the executive to take effect.

Particularly all the elements that ensure that the electoral processes are more transparent and open i.e inclusion of stakeholders in the processes, availing the voters roll and other materials openly.

Conclusively, we urge the ZEC, Parliament of Zimbabwe, the Government of Zimbabwe, Civics and Political Parties to critically reflect and agree on a roadmap on electoral reforms especially issues raised by the 2018 harmonized local and international election observer missions.

The scheduled by-elections must be used as a measure to test the country’s preparedness for a free, fair and credible election in the upcoming 2023 Harmonized elections. Therefore, there is an urgent need to implement electoral reforms.

Dr Khupe Faces The Chop

By A Correspondent- Battle lines have been drawn within the MDC-T ahead of the party’s congress, set for March 5, amid indications that party leader Douglas Mwonzora’s supporters are angling to dump his deputy, Thokozani Khupe.

Mwonzora yesterday announced that his party would hold its congress 21 days before the by-elections on March 26 this year.

“The national council (NC) directed that the party will hold its congress on March 5. This will be the ordinary congress. The main congress will be preceded by congress and branch, ward, district and provincial level,” Mwonzora said at a Press conference in Harare.

He said all positions would be up for grabs.

“In the MDC-T, it is not an offence to contest, so those who are hopeful and qualify are allowed to contest,” Mwonzora said.

Party insiders told NewsDay that the announcement by Mwonzora has set the stage for elections expected to ensure that Khupe and party chairperson Morgen Komichi, who have an uneasy relationship with Mwonzora are ousted.

“Congress is being pushed just a few days before what will be crucial by-elections, the target mainly is to deal with Khupe and her team of Khalipani Phugeni and Chief Ndlovu. These people have been seen as enemies of Mwonzora and they will be fired by the electorate,” said a highly placed source.

Manama Hospital Renovations Near Completion

By A Correspondent- Renovations at Manama Mission Hospital where infrastructure and buildings were extensively damaged by a violent storm late last year are nearing completion following the erection of a new roof.

Government allocated $28 million for repairs and upgrading of Manama Hospital after noting that all the institution’s infrastructure does not meet modern health care standards.

Roofs of several wards that include the maternity ward were blown off following heavy rains accompanied by strong winds.

The infrastructure damage is estimated at US$40 000.

Treasury initially released $8 million to repair the damaged infrastructure, but later availed more funds to upgrade the entire hospital infrastructure, which is in a poor state.

According to The Chronicle, the affected ward now has a new roof but the ceilings, plumbing, painting, flooring and electricals are yet to be completed.

Matabeleland South Provincial Public Works director Mr Sijabuliso Ncube said despite being on leave, he is aware that significant progress had been made towards completing repairs at the hospital.

“We have put up the roof on the affected ward and will soon be doing the finishing touches.

Now that the roof is done, we will be putting up the ceilings, electricals, painting and other repair work,” said Mr Ncube.

The strong winds and heavy rains, which hit Manama area, also left the hospital without electricity after solar panels were damaged, affecting water storage tanks and telecommunication cables, resulting in the suspension of critical services.

The suspended services include the expanded programme of immunisation (EPI), maternity delivery services, postnatal care services, isolation of Covid-19 positive mothers, antenatal care services and integrated management of neonatal, childhood illnesses and mortuary services.

Matabeleland South provincial medical director Dr Rudo Chikodzero said the hospital has had to make do with the current infrastructure to accommodate patients.

“The female patients are still having to share space with patients from other wards, as we await completion of the hospital repairs,” said Dr Chikodzero.

Four departments were extremely affected, leaving the hospital operating with just four wards, which accommodate all the admitted patients.

Media personality Dr Omphile Marupi, who was born at the hospital, co-ordinated a fundraising drive under the banner of Friends of Manama last year to help repair the health facility.

Friends of Manama brought together teachers, academics, businesspeople, politicians, service chiefs and ordinary people associated with the hospital in one way or the other.

Manama Mission Hospital was built in 1939 by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe (ELCZ) using farm bricks and its roofing is a combination of corrugated iron and asbestos.

It is located 85km south of Gwanda town and has a catchment population of 82 500 based on the 1992 census.

The hospital mainly services the population of Gwanda South and Beitbridge West.

It also acts as a referral hospital for other parts of Beitbridge District, Maphisa, Kezi, parts of Mberengwa and Botswana.

Mrs Medeline Nare, a villager from the Manama area, said they were anxious to see the affected ward up and running again as the hospital has been a mainstay of their community.

“We’re happy that the hospital is being renovated and hope that the repairs will be completed soon.

It’s not good to have a hospital in such a state; the patients are not comfortable where they are now,” said Mrs Nare.

“SA Waking Up To Reality”

By Patrick Guramatunhu- “The #January8statement at @MYANC’s 110th anniversary by @CyrilRamaphosa called for the unconditional lifting of sanctions against Cuba, solidarity with Palestine and Western Sahara, but was silent on #ZimSanctions: @MYANC/@ZANUPF_Official relations are now in smoke,” revealed Professor Jonathan Moyo, the self-exiled former Zanu PF Cabinet Minister, on twitter.

If SA is finally waking up to the reality that Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown is not cause by sanctions, as Zanu PF would have everyone believe, but decades of gross mismanagement, rampant corruption and rank lawlessness that has the country labelled a pariah state. One hopes that SA is also waking up to the reality that Zanu PF has been rigging elections to stay in power.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said Zimbabwe’s 2018 elections “went well”. He was lying, of course. How can an election process that failed to produce something as basic as a verified voters’ roll be anything but a farce!

If SA was to refuse to endorse Zimbabwe’s 2023 elections, which Zanu PF is rigging already by denying 3 million Zimbabweans in the diaspora the vote “until the West imposed sanctions are lifted”, for example. It is a feeble excuse; why should Zimbabweans in the diaspora be denied their fundamental right to a meaningful say in the governance of the country over a matter in which they had no say. Worse still, why deny the vote to Zimbabweans in SA and other nation that have not imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe.

Considering Mnangagwa “won the 2018 elections with 2.4 million vote or 50.8% of the cast votes. The 3 million diaspora vote is very significant: 3 out of a possible 8 million registered voters or 37% of the electorate. How can the elections be anything else but a farce if one of the contestants is allowed to cherry pick and deny 37% of the electorate the vote!

If SA and one or two other SADC countries were to refuse to endorse Zimbabwe’s 2023 elections as a free and fair process and thus endorse Zanu PF’s legitimacy this will put Zimbabwe back in the situation it was in after the 2008 rigged elections. Zanu PF was forced then to sign the 2008 Global Political Agreement, agreeing to the implementation of a raft of democratic reforms designed to restore the individual freedoms and rights of all Zimbabweans including the right to free, fair and credible elections.

Alas, the 2008 to 2013 GNU comprising of Zanu PF and the two MDC factions led by Morgan Tsvangirai and Arthur Mutambara failed to implement even one reform in five years. The world can be rest assured no stone will be left unturned to make sure competent men and women are given the task of implementing the reforms this time!

No Joy For Civil Servants As Meeting With Govt Fails To Take Off

A crunch meeting between Government and civil servants’ union leaders failed to kick off yesterday as representatives could not connect on Zoom due to connectivity and power challenges and employees have since requested to meet on Friday.

The parties were yesterday expected to hold a National Joint Negotiating Committee (NJNC) meeting to deliberate on the welfare of Government workers.

They were supposed to meet for the first time this year during an indaba that was expected to lay the guiding framework of how public sector wages and living conditions will be made better throughout the year.

Government has since said it will be paying its employees Covid-19 allowances in foreign currency.

Civil servants will receive their US$75 monthly Covid-19 risk allowance in cash as well as pensioners their US$30 allowances. In 2021, Government paid bonuses in US dollars.

In an interview, Apex Council president Mrs Cecilia Alexander: “There were connectivity problems so we failed to communicate smoothly so given the importance of the meeting and the level of interaction, we the workers side have requested for a physical meeting on Friday.”

Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions secretary-general Mr David Dzatsunga said key speakers could not contribute.

“The meeting could not take off because of connectivity challenges that we experienced, especially by some of the key speakers who could not connect.

We then agreed that maybe we should have a special arrangement that we have an in-person meeting, if possible,” said Mr Dzatsunga.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (Zimta) proposed to Government to pay workers in foreign currency, suggesting that the lowest paid worker should get US$671.

According to the Zimta position paper on salary review for the first quarter of 2022, this was necessitated by the “decimation of salaries and allowances for teachers in particular and civil servants in general”.

In its list of demands, Zimta said they could accept that half their salary be paid in US dollars and the other in local currency.

“The lowest grade civil servant is paid US$671, gross salary.

Or that, alternatively, that all workers at least be paid fifty percent (50%) of the improved salary in USD, with the balance paid in ZWL.

Or alternatively that all civil servants be paid their improved salary in USD every quarter,” read the position paper.

Last month, civil servants said they hoped Government would accede to their request for salaries to be paid in foreign currency as the country starts a new year saying this will improve their standards of living.

Government employees said at that time that payment of bonuses in foreign currency has given them hope for a better 2022.

Government paid workers bonuses in foreign currency as a way of cushioning them from an inflationary environment.

Gata, Rimbi Files For Divorce

By A Correspondent- At least 45 divorce cases have been filed at the High Court this month, and one of the disgruntled divorce applicants is the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) executive chairman Sydney Gata.

The High Court’s Family Court in Harare will this Thursday hear a total of 22 divorce cases.

According to official statistics, 1 351 couples filed for divorce last year, an increase from 1 117 cases handled in 2020.

Gata is one of the prominent figures who have filed for divorce. He is divorcing his wife, Ntombana R. Gata (nee) Mogomoza.

Details regarding the couple’s breakup were not readily available, but the matter is already before the High Court.

One Hansen Inkope, who is divorcing his wife Farirai, has already appeared in court and the divorce case became the second to be filed at the High Court this year.

Popular bus operator, Decent Rimbi of Rimbi Travel and Tours is also going through a nasty process of divorcing his wife, Everjoice Rimbi (nee) Sithole. However, Decent has been barred by the courts from disposing of the couple’s property before the finalisation of the matter at the High Court.

The court heard Rimbi had rushed to court soon after the couple’s fallout and filed for divorce. He filed for divorce after his wife hired thugs to assault his girlfriend.

The businessman also instructed his security guards to bar his estranged wife from accessing the company offices and property.

However, Everjoice filed an urgent chamber application in December last year, seeking an interdict against her husband. She is claiming she helped Decent to build the business empire from scratch.

The High Court ruled in favour of Everjoice and ordered that no assets should be disposed of until the divorce case is finalised.

“It is hereby declared that the applicant as co-owner, co-shareholder and co-director has the right to remuneration, profits, and use of the union and company assets pending determination of divorce proceedings…first respondent (Decent) to pay costs of this suit,” the provisional judgment reads.

“The first respondent and all those acting through him be and are hereby barred and interdicted from preventing applicant or her duly authorised representative from accessing company premises…and using the motor vehicle…the first respondent and all those acting through him are barred and interdicted from taking any money from the business’s revenue without the involvement and consent of the applicant.”

Everjoice wants equal entitlement to the couple’s houses in New Marimba, Marlborough, and Glen View 1 Extension all in Harare. She also wants unfettered ownership of the company’s 10 buses that are currently being shipped from China, 16 buses plying different routes in Zimbabwe, a road tanker, tractor, several trailers, and light vehicles.

Other couples are also divorcing for various reasons, but the majority of them are due to infidelity.

15 Teachers Arrested For Protesting Against Poor Salaries

Police yesterday arrested at least 15 teachers for protesting poor salaries while a virtual meeting between civil servants and government was postponed due to connectivity problems.

Freelance journalist Marry Mundeya was also arrested, but was later released after the intervention of lawyers.

The protest came as government and civil servants were meeting to discuss salaries and welfare for 2022.

Restless State workers are demanding United States dollar wages.

“We could not proceed with the virtual meeting because of connectivity challenges. Another issue is that the meeting is very important such that physical meetings are necessary to put across our issue,” Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions secretary-general David Dzatsunga said.

“We asked to postpone it and if all goes well, we should have a physical meeting.

“We are just basically looking at the United States dollar salary that is becoming more than an expectation, but it is becoming more of a right because we are looking at the economy and the economic dynamics and it is clearly pointing to the fact that RTGS salaries are no longer sustainable.”

He added: “Even if you look back at the bonus decision that the government made unilaterally out of its own wisdom that giving us RTGS salaries was not the correct way, this should spur it to push this into salaries after that realisation.”

Public Service minister Paul Mavima said he was on leave and could not comment on the salary talks between government and civil servants.

Police could not immediately confirm the arrest of protesting teachers, with Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza saying: “I will have to check, but for now, I have not received such a report.”

Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (Artuz) leader Obert Masaraure was among the protesters who were arrested for demonstrating in Harare.

He confirmed his arrest.

In a statement, Artuz said a significant number of their members remained unaccounted for by last night.

“Mavima promised that 2022 is a good year for civil servants. Teachers nationwide are preparing to celebrate the restoration of the pre-October 2018 salaries. We hope the government gets it right this time so that we revive the classroom,” the rural teachers said.

Chamisa Says Ready To Crush ‘Head Of The Snake’

Tinashe Sambiri| MDC Alliance leader President Nelson Chamisa says he is ready to “crush the head of the snake.”

Zanu PF leader Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa and MDC-T’s Douglas Mwonzora are conspiring to pull down President Chamisa before the coming polls.

The two politicians are afraid of President Chamisa’s rising influence and they are working tirelessly to block him from participating in electoral processes.

However, President Chamisa has pointed out that he is aware of his political opponents’ tactics.

“I generally dislike snakes. Snakes are poisonous and venomous .

And I’m determined to crush the head of any snake absolutely and completely. Good morning friends,” President Chamisa wrote on his official Facebook page.

Political observers argue Mr Mnangagwa and Mr Mwonzora have one thing in common- both men are quaking in their boots as they are afraid of being defeated by President Chamisa in the 2023 Presidential Election.

Below is Bishop Magaya’s statement:

The church can do more to hold President Mnangagwa accountable.

President Ramaphosa’s pledge to not only implement the recommendations of the state capture report, but to step aside if he finds himself conflicted, is sweet to hear. Sadly, we have in Zimbabwe a Motlanthe led -commission recommendations that ED has not yet implemented.

When a head of state appoints a commission of inquiry whose report he launches and three years later, the recommendations in the report are still not implemented, then the accountability governance in the country is pathologically flawed. What is more disturbing is the failure by a nation (Zimbabwean citizenry) which is 80%christian according to Zim stats to demand accountability. It is tragic to speak it, yet true to say that the church in Zimbabwe has failed not only to live to the expectations of her followers, but also to the dictates of her prophetic mandate.

The church has not leveraged on her spiritual and moral clout to hold government accountable; neither has she leveraged on her large followership to demand accountability.

The ZCBC pastoral letter of August 12 2020 and the ensuing solidarity statements from several church-based organisations and civic organisations were a clearest indication of a likely mass mobilisation that would result from such a strong moral and spiritual stance by the church. Sadly, because of the backlash from government, the church was cowed down and found herself paralyzed.

The vitality of the church is not just to gather masses, cast out demons, healing the sick, tongue speaking and collecting offerings.

Whilst these are important, the vitality of the church is more in her ability to, inter alia, fight against all forms of social injustices, corruption and selective application of the law. Fully knowing this, Amos in his prophetic indictment to the Jewish nation says, ‘I hate your religious festivals, I cannot stand them. When you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them, I will not accept the animals you have fattened to bring me as offerings. Stop your noisy songs, I do not want to listen to your harps .

Instead, let justice flow like a stream and righteousness like a river that never goes dry, (Chapter 5vs21-24).

Weighing in on this heart piercing prophecy, a leading 20th century American human rights activist and church leader, Martin Luther King Junior had this to say, “Any religion that professes to be concerned about the souls of man and is not concerned about the slums that damn them, the economic conditions that strangle them and the social conditions that cripple them is a spiritually moribund religion awaiting burial.”

I would like to charge the church to rise beyond the comfort zones this year and beyond, saying “no” to the dictates of this wicked system, and saying “yes” to the Holy Spirit.

My deep sensing is that no sooner would the church rise to embrace her prophetic voice than we would begin to realize the so much needed transitioning of this nation to a new era of economic prosperity, political stability, justice and peace. Put differently, the church is the sole reason why there has been so much delay in the much-needed transformation. There is therefore need for the church to rise in an unusual faith action.

Mnangagwa’s Home Province Rocked By Ugly Power Fights

Tension has gripped President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s home province of the Midlands, with security reportedly on high alert ahead of Zanu-PF provincial elections that were moved to this weekend following violent clashes allegedly instigated by former State Security minister Owen Ncube.

Ncube, a known key ally of Mnangagwa, reportedly bussed machete-wielding gangs to last weekend’s meeting to fill the provincial posts.

The gangs threatened to chop critics, forcing the elections to be aborted.

Mnangagwa later dismissed Ncube from his ministerial post.

There has been simmering tension in Midlands as the fight by rival factions turned bloody.

Sources close to Ncube told NewsDay yesterday that they will “wait and see” what will happen, while his rivals celebrated his “demise” as they positioned themselves to take over influential posts he had allegedly dished to his allies and relatives.

One of the rival camps linked to party district co-ordinating committee member Andros Mugabe openly celebrated Ncube’s fall and called for disciplinary action and disqualification of his nephew, Energy Ncube, from contesting in the March by-elections.

The rival group accused Ncube of seeking to impose his nephew to stand for Zanu-PF in a fight to replace the late Kwekwe Central MP Masango Matambanadzo.

Zanu-PF Midlands provincial chairman Larry Mavima, who was reportedly imposed by Mnangagwa to avert a potentially explosive battle between Ncube and former chairman Daniel Mackenzie Ncube, yesterday warned all “misfits” that they would be dealt with decisively.

Mavima confirmed that elections for the remaining posts would be concluded this weekend and described the atmosphere as calm and stable.

“The atmosphere is calm, stable and we will continue with the conclusion of the elections this weekend and we believe that we have reached a position where there will be no violence or intimidation of any nature,” Mavima said.

“I am very confident that we will have a successful conclusion of the process and that from now on, we will work together as a united province.”

On violence and intimidation, Mavima said: “I want to be very clear to all those misfits that do believe they can threaten people, they can intimidate people, that the full force of the law will deal with them.

“Zimbabwe is a peaceful country. The Midlands is a peaceful province and the President is always talking about peace and calm, loving one another. If anyone ever thinks that they are above the law, we will deal with them and we will deal with them effectively.

“We are not going to tolerate any nonsense whatsoever. The party is supreme anyone who goes against the principles of the party, we will deal with them.”

Zanu-PF is deeply divided across provinces, and the divisions were worsened by the disputed provincial polls that were marred by reports of rigging and violence.

Allegations of rigging have also been raised in Matabeleland North province, where officials have accused a camp aligned to Richard Moyo of manipulating the votes against Believe Gaule.

Senior party officials in the province told NewsDay that the rigging was unfortunate and a disaster for Zanu-PF. “The rigging started in the district elections,” a senior party official said.

There were also complaints in Mashonaland West, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland Central and several other provinces, with observers saying the developments were confirmation that Zanu-PF remained deeply divided.

Government, Civil Servants Salary Meeting Flops

By- A make or break meeting between Government and civil servants’ union leaders failed to kick off yesterday as representatives could not connect on Zoom due to connectivity and power challenges and employees have since requested to meet on Friday.

Noisy S*x Lands Bulawayo Man In Court

B-A Bulawayo man who has made his mother’s life a living hell by having noisy s*x has appeared in court.

The man’s mother, Loveness Makonye (58) of Entumbane suburb, revealed that she hardly sleeps as her son, Talent Makonye (29), frequently hires sex workers and has noisy s*x with them.

Makonye described her son as a s*x maniac who hardly lets a day pass by without disturbing her peace. Attempts to make him change his ways have been abortive as Talent turns violent and insults her.

He told her she has no right to reprimand him as the house belongs to his late father.

In her affidavit, she said: “I am applying for a protection order against my son Talent.
Whenever he is from drinking alcohol, he would bring a lady and they would start making noise during their s*x sessions thereby disturbing my peace. When I try to warn him against disturbing my peace he would shout at me.
At one point I knocked at his door, he then opened the door while hurling insults at me. He then assaulted me saying I’m disturbing him. I have engaged his uncle to talk to him, but he does not reform.”
The presiding magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube granted Makonye a protection order against her son. Talent was ordered to refrain from bringing his lovers home. He was also ordered not to physically and verbally abuse his mother.

Kariba Man Survives Three Crocodiles Attack, Kills One

By- A Kariba is receiving medication in Zambia after being attacked by three crocodiles on Lake Kariba shores last Thursday.

Alexander Chimedza has since been taken to Zambia for medication after suffering a broken hand, injured thighs and broken fingers in the fight that also claimed the life of one crocodile.

Alexander Chimedza before the mishap

Controversy “Spoils ” Mali Win Over Tunisia

Mali and Tunisia’s Africa Cup of Nations game finished in chaos after the referee first signalled for full-time on 85 minutes, then ended the match when the clock showed 89 minutes and 47 seconds.

Tunisia coach Mondher Kebaier and his technical staff raced on to the field to confront referee Janny Sikazwe after his final whistle consigned them to a 1-0 defeat in Group F.

Twenty minutes later, after Mali manager Mohamed Magassouba’s post-match press conference had started, tournament organisers ordered the game to be played to a conclusion.

However, in more farcical scenes, Tunisia’s players did not return to the field and Mali were declared winners.

Kebaier called the referee’s actions “inexplicable”, adding: “He blew for full time and asked us to go to the dressing room, so the players were in their ice baths and then he asked us to come back out.

“In 30 years in this business, I have never seen anything like it.”

At the end of an action-packed second half, which saw two stoppages for video assistant referee checks as well as a drinks break and several substitutions, Sikazwe became the centre of attention.

The Zambian – who refereed two group-stage games at the 2018 World Cup in Russia – had signalled for full-time with five minutes remaining, before checking his timings and continuing the game.

Then he ended the match 23 seconds before the 90th minute mark – and without adding on any additional time for stoppages.

Kebaier and his staff angrily confronted Sikazwe and his assistants on the pitch, pointing to their watches and remonstrating about the lack of added time.- BBC

Elephants Edge Battling Equatorial Guinea

Passengers Bash Comedian Over Joke

By A Correspondent- Bulawayo comedian Zex Mdawini Sibanda was reportedly assaulted last week on a Zupco bus after he joked about lodgers in a manner which did not go down well with some of the passengers.

Sibanda throws jokes in public while recording them before circulating the audios or videos on social media platforms.

Most of his jokes have gone viral, but last Thursday it was a different story altogether when the comic tried to entertain passengers travelling to Old Pumula, his residential area.

In one of the audios, Sibanda could be heard saying: “Hallo, eh Gumede, NguMdawini ulandlord wakho. Bengisithi izolo laphana ngikunika ama articles of co-existing rules and regulations, ezokuhlala koMdawini residence, ngikhohlwe umthetho oyione, ngicela ukungezelela. Wena irent oyibhadalayo ngeyomduli, letoilet, lamanzi lamagetsi fullstop. Kumafruits awungeni. Ngithi ezihlahleni zami zamagwava lamamengo awungeni Gumede. Ngoba wabhadalela ukuzohlala awubhadalelanga ukuzokudla, ngilamanga?,” which could loosely be translated to say: “Hello Gumede, it’s Mdawini your landlord. I was saying yesterday when I gave you the articles of co-existing, rules and regulations for residing at Mdawini residence, I forgot one rule I want to add it. The rent that you are paying is for the walls, toilet, water and electricity. You must not touch my fruit trees. I mean my guava and mango trees, you must not touch, because you paid for residence, not to eat. Am I lying?)

Sibanda said as he did his antics, it so happened that there was a Gumede on the bus and he and his colleagues felt offended.

The angry Gumede and his friends accused Sibanda of influencing landlords to increase rentals.

“During the show, some three guys started an argument with me saying I influenced their landlords to increase rentals in Pumula,” Sibanda said.

“I thought it was all in the name of humour, but one guy who identified himself as Gumede stood up and assaulted me.”

Sibanda said he tried to defend himself but was overpowered by the trio and was rescued by other passengers.

However, the comedian said he did not report the matter to the police because the assault was an occupational hazard.

He said his skit was meant to entertain the public and was not personal

By Farai D Hove | Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube’s announcements that the country is purchasing COVID vaccines have been exposed when it emerged everything is being donated.

Mthuli Ncube

Speaking at the end of June last year, Ncube said USD40million had already been spent by the end of the month.

“The assistance comprising four million Sinopharm doses and six million Sinovac doses is in addition to the two million doses Zimbabwe has received as donation since February 2021 from the People’s Republic of China,” said Mnangagwa.

Details on who likely benefited from the USD40 million were not revealed at the time of writing.

President Chamisa To Unveil Agenda 2022

COMMUNIQUE ON 11/01/2022 NATIONAL STANDING COMMITTEE MEETING

On the 11th of January 2022, the National Standing Committee of the MDC Alliance met in accordance with the party’s constitution.

The National Standing Committee received the reports of the President and the Secretary-General.

The following matters were deliberated upon:

A. Deepening National Crisis

  1. Political Environment & Economic Crisis: Contrary to the regime’s propaganda that paints a false picture of economic progress, the party expresses concern over Zimbabwe’s multi-faceted governance, economic and social crisis which has manifested in mass starvation, over-taxation, corruption, hyperinflation, 49% extreme poverty, joblessness, wage erosion, poor earnings by civil servants and poor remuneration crisis in the education sector. We condemn the continued implementation of anti-poor policies which will be a matter of the past under an MDC Alliance Government.
  2. Beitbridge Forced Migration Crisis: The forced migration crisis at Beitbridge Border Post is a manifestation of a longstanding crisis of governance in Zimbabwe. While people move from country to country throughout the world, the Zimbabwe-South Africa migration is driven largely by chronic unemployment and extreme poverty in Zimbabwe which are directly connected to the illegitimacy of Mr Mnangagwa’s regime and the nation’s deep-seated governance crisis. We call for an urgent resolution to this crisis.

B. Agenda 2022

  1. Agenda 2022 Address: Consistent with our tradition, the people’s President will unveil the Agenda 2022 statement on a date to be advised to give the nation direction and the expectation of things to be accomplished this year. The movement will do the needful to win Zimbabwe for change. The people’s leadership commits to raising the morale of the suffering masses, leading a monumental citizen organization effort and ensuring citizens are at the centre of change as we build the new.
  2. Election Preparedness: The people’s leadership is building a platform for a citizen-based campaign to mobilize for change, do the heavy lifting and carry out intensive preparations as we work to secure 6 million votes in the 2023 election and a two-thirds majority in Parliament. The people’s movement is still standing and we have successfully resisted the regime’s attempt to return Zimbabwe to one-party rule. Zimbabwe remains plagued by an illegitimacy crisis which has tainted all arms of government. Our core business is to secure transformation and change in Zimbabwe by winning elections and forming the next government. We thank the citizens for standing firm in rejecting dictatorship, corruption and injustice. We will continue to be a solidarity movement that practices ethical leadership and puts the people first in all policy-making, political activities and the implementation of our activities.
  3. Voter Registration Campaign, Youth Mobilization Drive & Electoral Reform Agenda: We repeat our call for all citizens to REGISTER TO VOTE. The people’s leadership calls for ZEC to stop the unconstitutional and illegal voter suppression and creation of bottlenecks in the voter registration process. We also call for the delivery of a transparent, verifiable voters’ roll. We call for the implementation of the electoral reforms set out in our Principles for Reliable Inclusive and Credible Elections in Zimbabwe (PRICE) document, including the alignment of the Electoral Act to the Constitution, the demilitarization of the ZEC secretariat, media reform and a transparent census and delimitation process. We call for a “BVR-type” voter registration blitz. We further demand that the national identity document crisis be addressed urgently. The movement has embarked on a dedicated youth mobilization drive to ensure that the young are registered and mobilized to vote and defend the vote in 2023.
  4. Remembering Dewa Mavhinga: The MDC Alliance continues to celebrate the life of Dewa Mavhinga who passed away at the end of last year. Dewa was a champion of human rights and the struggle for a better Zimbabwe. His legacy will be remembered by the many Zimbabweans for whose cause he bravely fought.
  5. The Release of Makomborero Haruzivishe: The MDC Alliance welcomes the release of the people’s hero, Makomborero Haruzivishe whose brave fight against tyranny and repression in Zimbabwe continues to inspire both the young and old. We maintain that he is innocent. It is not a crime to demand a better society.

Cleric Urges Church To Speak Out Against Zanu PF Brutality

Tinashe Sambiri| Zimbabwe Divine Destiny director, Bishop Ancelimo Magaya, has challenged Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration to stop violating citizens’ rights.

Bishop Magaya also challenged the church to speak out against tyranny and relentless oppression of citizens by Mr Mnangagwa’s regime.

Mnangagwa is deliberately sitting on findings of the Motlanthe Commission, according to Bishop Magaya.

Importance Of Regular Cervical Cancer Screening

Screening for cervical cancer

All adult women should undergo periodic cervical cancer screening.

Mwonzora Declares Self MDC Alliance Leader

Mwonzora’s letter to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission:

Re: Signatories for Candidates For the Movement for Democratic Change

We advise that in the forthcoming by-elections we intend to field candidates in Parliament and Local Government. We are the owners of the Movement for Democratic Change name. Over the years there has had so many derivatives put on it. However, the leadership of this party was defined by the Supreme Court in the judgment in SC 56/20. Pursuant to this judgment the party held its Extraordinary Congress on the 27’h of December 2020 where I was elected the substantive President of the Party. By virtue of the Composite Political Agreement signed on the 5’h of August 2017 and the subsequent meetings of the MDC Alliance, I assumed the leadership of the MDC Alliance.

We, therefore, advise that our signatories for the candidates of the Movement for Democratic Change and its derivatives in the coming elections and by-elections are:

Douglas Togaraseyi Mwonzora — President

Morgen Komichi — National Chairman

Paurina Mpariwa — Secretary-General

Ghandi Mudzingwa — Secretary for Elections

We advise that no one else is allowed to sign for and present candidates for and on behalf of the MDC, any of its derivatives and the MDC Alliance.

We attach hereto the relevant signature forms for your information. 1 also attach the constitution of the MDC, the Supreme Court judgment and the Alliance Agreement.

Owen Mudha Ouster, Fresh Details Emerge

By- Latest details on the Monday ouster from the cabinet of the State Security Minister, Owen Mudha Ncube, revealed that he was fired on the instigation of the newly installed Zanu PF Midlands provincial chairman Larry Mavhima.

According to NewZimbabwe.com, Mavhima held a three-hour-long meeting with Mnangagwa at his Pricabe Farm in Kwekwe last Sunday, where he complained about Mudha’s violent behaviour.

The news portal said Mavima sought an emergency meeting with Mnangagwa intending to resign from the chairmanship after an aborted Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting in Gweru the day before.

The meeting was abandoned after Ncube threatened to assault Public Service Minister Paul Mavima and Gokwe Nembudziya legislator Justice Mayor Wadyajena during the proceedings.

Ncube had also bussed machete-wielding thugs to surround the venue of the meeting to intimidate his opponents.

During the meeting with Mnangagwa, Mavima (Larry), reportedly said he could not work with Mudha because of his violent tendencies.

Mavima is reported to have told Mnangagwa that numerous provincial leaders were considering leaving the party because of Ncube’s conduct. Said a ZANU PF insider:

What happened is that after the Saturday fiasco at the PCC meeting, some senior ZANU PF members advised Mavhima to go straight to the president and give him a full report of what transpired.

And so on Sunday, he went to the president’s farm and they spent about three hours conversing about the issues.

The message he carried to the president was simple and clear: nobody was able to work with Mudha anymore.

So it was a question of either to retain Mudha and risk dismantling the province or sack him and save the situation. Any leader in that situation would decide the way that ED did.

You should visit the province and see how excited people are about this development.

In fact, this axe had been hanging over his head since last year when he started deploying some CIO (Central Intelligence Organisation) operatives and machete gangs to harass his rivals in a bid to win the provincial chairmanship position which he wanted.

So basically, the man had the rug proverbially pulled off his feet and when the province decided that Mavhima should be the unopposed chairman, he resorted to fighting for his proxies who were seeking other positions through violence and intimidation.

The situation had become very tricky and the President really faced the inevitable choice of having to fire him.

But he was not working alone. He was working in direct consultation with July Moyo, who leads a faction in the province that wants to dominate affairs here.

It will not, therefore, be surprising to see the axe falling on him because he is basically the master controller and these are his runners.

Ncube was fired from the Government on Monday for “conduct that was deemed inappropriate for a Minister of Government”.

By-MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora has pressed the MDC-Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa to drop his party name.

Mwonzora announced this ahead of the March 26 by-elections in which MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa intends to participate.

Chief Musarurwa In Court For Rape

By- Chief Musarurwa, born Enos Musakwa (52), appeared in court on Tuesday facing two counts of attempted rape involving a 14-year-old girl.

The minor told the court that the traditional leader cornered and fondled her in an attempt to rape her.

Musarurwa, who is being represented by Norman Mugiya of Mugiya and Muvhimi Associates appeared before Chivhu Provincial Magistrate Batanai Madzinhira.

In the first incident which occurred in September 2020, the minor said she went to fetch water from a borehole near Musarurwa’s homestead when the chief lured her to his place.

The traditional leader allegedly took the girl into a corridor in his house where he fondled her breasts, caressed her v*gina and kissed her. He then allowed her to go.

In the second incident that allegedly took place on 9 August 2021, Chief Musarurwa visited the juvenile at her place of residence and found her in the company of her parents.

He reportedly managed to persuade the girl to get into his official car and then drove off.

Musarurwa allegedly parked his car and fondled the complainant’s breasts, caressed her v*gina and kissed her for about ten minutes before letting her go.

The girl reportedly went home crying and told her mother about the incident. The case was later reported at Chivhu ZRP on 25 August 2021.

Musarurwa is denying the allegations, claiming that he spent the month of September 2020 in Harare.

The traditional leader also said he is a victim of a border dispute between himself and Chief Chivese.

In the second count, Musarurwa admitted to visiting the complainant’s place on 9 August 2021 but said he had gone to see Jacob Tsodzo (father of the complainant) who was not feeling well.

Musarurwa said he was asked to talk to the girl who had allegedly become a problem in the community.

Meanwhile, the case was reported six months ago and it took many complaints from the parents before Chivhu Police brought it to court.

Corence Chimbadzwa represented the State. The case was postponed to 14 January 2022 for the continuation of trial.

Mamombe and Chimbiri are facing allegations of staging an illegal demonstration in breach of Covid-19 regulations banning gatherings.
However, Mamombe and Chimbiri put the State on notice that if it fails to furnish them with a trial date on the next sitting they will apply for refusal of further remand.

The two activists were arrested after holding a news conference on the steps of the Harare Magistrates Court denouncing the arrest of pro-democracy campaigner Makomborero Haruzivishe.

Kundai Benyu Injury Update

Kundai Benyu has become a doubt for the Warriors’ next Afcon 2021 Group G encounter against Malawi after suffering a knock on his left knee on Monday.

The midfielder, who had an outstanding performance, was stretchered off in the second half of the 1-0 loss to Senegal.

Speaking to NewsDay, Benyu said the injury is not serious but admitted he is still feeling some pain.

“Right now I am in pain but I and the physios are in agreement that it’s not the most serious injury,” he said.

“We’ll try to recover as quickly as possible and see how I am in the next couple of days to hopefully be ready for the Malawi game and so on.”

FIFA Bans Ivory Coast Goalkeeper

Ivory Coast goalkeeper Sylvain Gbohouo has been slapped with a ban by FIFA and will no longer take part in his team’s Afcon 2021 Group E opener against Equatorial Guinea tonight.

Gbohouo’s ban comes after he violated doping rules. The 33-year-old tested positive for trimetazidine, a heart medication that the World Anti-Doping Agency categorises as a stimulant.

According to BBC Africa, the Elephants’ head coach Patrice Beaumelle was notified about the doping violation on 26 December but went on to register the player for the tournament.

“We had hope of getting a favourable response from Fifa but yesterday I learned that they were upholding their decision,” Beaumelle said.

Gbohouo, who plays his club football in Ethiopia for Wolkite City, has since appealed against the ruling.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Madzongwe Apologises For Conceding Penalty

Warriors midfielder Kelvin Madzongwe has appologised to the nation for conceding the penalty which led to Zimbabwe’s defeat to Senegal in the opening Group B AFCON 2021 match yesterday.

When it appeared all was going well for Zimbabwe, who were on course for what would have been a crucial point in the team’s quest to progress to the knockout stages for the first time, Madzongwe handled a goal-bound shot in the 94th minute and referee Mario Escobar quickly pointed to the spot.

Liverpool star Sadio Mane confidently sent Petros Mhari the wrong way to ensure a heartbreak for Zimbabwe and Madzongwe has appologised for that incident.

“Mistakes happen in football, but this one really affected me badly. Had it not been for the penalty, we could be having a point from our opener or even a win, but all that is now just wishes, he said according to The Chronicle.

“I am extremely sorry to my teammates and coaches, but more importantly to the nation. It’s no use trying to argue that the decision was a bit harsh as I was looking the opposite direction. Once again, my sincere apologies. I wish I could reverse what happened,” he added.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Super Eagles Fly Past Pharaohs

Kelechi Iheanacho’s excellent first-half goal handed Nigeria a deserved 1-0 victory over a below-par Egypt in their Africa Cup of Nations Group D clash in Garoua on Tuesday.

Iheanacho crashed a half-volley from the edge of the box into the top corner after 30 minutes to settle the contest, but Nigeria should have added at least a couple more goals in what was the best performance by a team in the finals so far and a warning to their rivals.

Egypt failed to shift out of first gear and could not get talisman forward Mohamed Salah into the game as he cut an isolated figure up front, starved of service and the quality around him to have an influence.

The second game in Group D will be played later on Tuesday when Sudan tackle Guinea-Bissau at the same venue.

Egypt were unsettled by the early loss of right-back Akram Tawfik to injury inside the first 10 minutes.

His absence meant Nigeria found plenty of joy down that flank, with the electric Moses Simon profiting and a constant worry for the Egyptians.

Simon had the first sight of goal as he found space in the box, but as the angle narrowed, could only fire into the side-netting.

But shortly afterwards, Nigeria were in front and again the move started with him. Iheanacho provided the sublime finish that left Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shennawy with no chance.

Any time the ball went near Salah he was surrounded by two or three defenders, but Egypt were not able to work the space that Nigeria’s doubling up on their lead forward provided them.

Nigeria hit the crossbar early in the second period when Taiwo Awoniyis close-range header was turned onto the frame of the goal by El Shennawy, before Iheanacho fluffed a superb chance to double the advantage as the ball fell to him in acres of space in the box, but a poor first touch let him down.

Salah finally got a sight of goal on 70 minutes but, under pressure from two defenders and the keeper, could not get any power into his effort.

Nigeria continued to look the most likely to score and the pace of their wingers and fullbacks stretched the more pedestrian Egyptians on a number of occasions.- SkySports

I Am Ready To Crush Snake’s Head – President Chamisa

Mnangagwa Killing Citizens Softly Through Inflation, Unemployment

Bishop Magaya Confronts Mnangagwa Over Brutality, Violation Of Human Rights

Tinashe Sambiri| Zimbabwe Divine Destiny director, Bishop Ancelimo Magaya, has challenged Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration to stop violating citizens’ rights.

Mr Mnangagwa

Bishop Magaya also challenged the church to speak out against tyranny and relentless oppression of citizens by Mr Mnangagwa’s regime.

Mnangagwa is deliberately sitting on findings of the Motlanthe Commission, according to Bishop Magaya.

Shock As Wife Skins Hubby’s Manhood

ZVISHAVANE – A Zvishavane man’s life is hanging precariously after his wife and mother-in-law skinned his penis from the head up to the point where the organ meets the testicles.

The incident happened three weeks ago on Christmas Day.
Gladys Shava (26) and her mother Laida Mwedzi (45) were on Thursday remanded in custody to January 17, 2022 after they appearing before Zvishavane Magistrate Archie Wochiunga for attempted murder charges, according to documents in the hands of The Mirror.

The accused who are from Vengai Village under Chief Mazvihwa allegedly also tried to cut off Onias Hove’s penis from near the testicles thereby leaving it dangling by a tiny piece of flesh, according to pictures in the hands of The Mirror.
The complainant’s relatives believe that the two women wanted to sell the skin and penis to be used for juju in South Africa.

Calvin Domire-Sani, a relative who spoke to The Mirror said doctors have written off Hove’s penis and said it will be useless even if it is saved from being cut off completely.

“His life is hanging precariously after going through this gruesome cruelty. He will no longer be able to sleep with a woman even if he is to survive,” Domire-Sani told The Mirror.
Documents in the hands of The Mirror indicate that Hove and Shava stayed for many years as husband and wife at Mwedzi’s homestead. The incident happened just after his wife had returned from South Africa and the two struck him on the head and he fell unconscious.

They then pulled him into the house where they skinned his penis and he became conscious when they were trying to cut off the penis.

“They locked him in the house for three days until someone alerted us. We found him almost dead and the two said that the skin peeled off as they were ‘playing’ with the penis.

Magistrate Archie Wochiunga remanded the duo in custody and advised to apply bail in the high court.- Masvingo Mirror

AGM Resolutions

The following emerged as key resolutions from the AGM:

1. To devolve and decentralize the institution as a way of enhancing its capacity to identify and respond to organic issues affecting members and citizens in their localities. This is also in line with the national call for devolution.

2. The realignment of the Coalition’s institutional structure and scope of its Thematic Committees to suit the contemporary operational environment and the devolution agenda.

3. To carry out a needs assessment and capacity development initiative for its membership.

4. To vigorously push for the alignment of the Zimbabwean constitution with emphasis on equal gender representation, electoral reforms and youth agency.

5. Affirmed an inclusive and broad based national Restore Zimbabwe Campaign (in line with the 2021 Strategic Planning process) in response to the Zimbabwe government’s failure or refusal to implement and abide by the national constitution and several African advisory papers including the Mothlante Commission

6. In light of the continued shrinking of the democratic space in Zimbabwe and threats to a key gain of our independence; one-person-one-vote, the Coalition resolved to mobilize at a grassroots level as well as the African regional level as part of efforts to resolve the Zimbabwean crisis

7. The Coalition noted with concern the continued ethnic attacks on communities in Matabeleland including the refusal or failure of the Peace and Reconciliation Commission to manage an inclusive national healing process on Gukurahundi.

Our position is that Zimbabwe cannot move into a nation state if this past genocide is not attended to.

8. To continue putting ordinary people’s interests at the centre of the Coalition’s policy advocacy.
