“MDC Blundering From Pillar To Post”-Wilbert Mukori

When Nelson Chamisa took over from Tsvangirai in 2018 many of those around him reportedly warned him that what he was doing was irregular, to say the least.

The High Court and then the Supreme Court have since weighed in and said the take over was unconstitutional. Why Chamisa and company should still be blubbering about this only goes to show just how indecisive they are.

This is not the first time that MDC leaders have show how breathtakingly incompetent and indecisive they are; they failure to implement even one reform in the five years of the GNU was one other example.

Zimbabwe is stuck in this economic and political mess because of not only Zanu PF corrupt and tyrannical rule but else because of MDC’s corrupt and incompetence in failing to end the dictatorship even when they had the golden opportunity to do so.

What we are witnessing here is MDC leaders blundering from pillar to post! And they even have the arrogance to call their foolishness “strategic thinking!”

Chaos At Zanu PF’s Masvingo PCC Meeting

Chaos ran supreme at the most recent Zanu-PF Masvingo Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting after the new provincial chairperson Robson Mavhenyengwa and his team allegedly smuggled in losing candidates from their faction replacing those who won but belong to the rival faction led by former chair Ezra Chadzamira.

Hell broke loose when the Mavhenyengwa faction replaced Energy Mutodi with Bikita South MP Josiah Sithole whom he thumped during the December 28, 2021 election to book a seat in the provincial frontliners.

Zanu-PF politburo member and secretary for legal affairs Paul Mangwana intervened and told the presiding team led by Fredrick Shava and Monica Mutsvangwa that what was being done was against the party constitution.

A team that is inclined to the former chair Ezra Chadzamira has the majority in the PCC and was hoping to win the slots for the vice chair, commissar and spokesperson among others, but the Mavhenyengwa faction came up with another strategy of appointing instead of going for election or at least by form of consensus.

Sources who spoke to TellZim News said after confirming the provincial leadership winners, Monica Mutsvangwa who was presiding over the process asked people to get into subcommittees and asked the chairpersons to elect the other key positions which they did instead of making everyone vote

“Mutsvangwa asked the chairpersons to go out, elect the Vice chair and other vacant posts after which the process was done. However, they went on to elect other members who lost in the elections into provincial members. The likes of Josiah Sithole who lost to Energy Mutodi in Bikita South and Ephraim Gwanongodza in Chivi replacing Chadzamira’s ‘blue-eyed boy’ Godfrey Mukungunugwa,” said the source

When contacted for comment, Mangwana declined to shed more light saying it was an internal process and everything that was said there was meant to strengthen the party as well as to making sure everything was done according to the party regulations.

“The issues that were discussed and took place are not for the media; they were internal processes and I only made contributions which I thought were going to strengthen the party,” said Mangwana.

“I had no power to stop the process, I was one of the senior members there and also the secretary for legal affairs, so whatever contribution I made there was to make sure that the process goes smoothly. It is not something for the media and public consumption,” said Mangwana

Mutodi confirmed having been replaced by Sithole and said he appealed to Mavhenyengwa who told him that they had not processed his transfer so he cannot be in the provincial executive.

“I won with close to 300 votes ahead of Sithole, but in the list provided by the new chair, I am not there. When I checked with him, he told me that they had not cleared my transfer but surprisingly they allowed me to contest. We have since appealed to the relevant authorities and I am sure the matter will be discussed at the Politiburo,” said Mutodi.

Mavhenyengwa who is also the MP for Zaka North said the process was completed and they have since forgotten about it.

“We have already completed the process and all the vacant posts were filled up. Those who are complaining are just doing so because it is their right and it is normal for losers in any election to complain that they were rigged,” said Mavhenyengwa.

He said as the new chairperson for the province he was ready to work with everyone as the party prepares for 2023 general elections.

“Zanu-PF is for us all and I am now the chairperson, it is no longer important whether you wanted me or not. We have to unite as we prepare for the 2023 elections,” he said.

Mavhenyengwa said the new Vice Chairperson is Trust Mugabe, Secretary for Administration Mathias Tongofa and Roy Bhila for finance.

The new Political Commissar is Brian Munyoro who is Gutu District Chairperson; Simon Muchafa is now the secretary for Transport while Ophias Murambiwa retained the post of secretary for information

Grandpa, Grandson Drowns In Pond

By A Correspondent- A 71 year old Chirumanzu man and his 10-year-old grandson drowned while swimming in a pond on Wednesday.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident yesterday.

“Everisto Mukashi together with his grandsons Tafadzwa Mukashi (10) and Simbarashe Mukashi (7) of Toindepi village under Chief Hama in Chirumanzu went to a nearby pond to swim,” he said.

“On arrival, Everisto and Tafadzwa dived into the pond and drowned. Simbarashe rushed back home and informed his mother, Monica Maputa of the incident and she together with other villagers rushed to the pond where they found the two bodies floating.”

In an unrelated case, a four-year-old Lower Gweru girl drowned in a washing dish on Thursday after her mother left her in the company of other minor children.

Mahoko said: “Mavis Moyo, a female aged 24 of Bhekeni village, Chief Bunina in Lower Gweru left her four-year-old daughter playing with other children in the yard while proceeding to the fields to call her parents for breakfast.

“On her return, she found the body of her daughter, Thandeka Moyo, floating in the dish.”

Meanwhile, police in Plumtree have launched a manhunt for a man who allegedly stabbed a fellow villager he accused of having a relationship with his girlfriend.

Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident yesterday.

The incident happened in Toti village in the Madlambudzi area on January 8.

“Mthokozisi (nicknamed Banda) was with his girlfriend  when he accused Norivete Ncube (21) for having an affair with his girlfriend. He stabbed him once on the left side of the chest, resulting in him collapsing. Mthokozisi fled from the scene after committing the crime and police are now keen to interview him,” she said.

President Nelson Chamisa Breaks Silence

By A Correspondent- Opposition MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa yesterday broke his silence on the raging debate regarding contestations over the party name, and told his supporters that he was unfazed by Zanu-PF and MDC-T machinations to decimate it.

In an interactive discussion with his followers on Twitter, Chamisa said:

“Get ready for victory, we have heard you. We listened and it shall be done as per your command and demand. Timing and strategy is everything. The new way, the new wave, it is time for change. Let’s teach them a lesson, you are the game changers and we are unstoppable.”

Observers had accused Chamisa of keeping his supporters in the dark over his game plan following the takeover of the party name by the rival faction led by Douglas Mwonzora.

Mwonzora last week wrote to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) seeking to bar Chamisa from using both the MDC Alliance party name and MDC acronym in by-elections set for March 26.

Chamisa’s party assured supporters that they would contest the upcoming by-elections as MDC Alliance.

“We will participate because as a movement that believes in democratic change, we know and understand the power of the ballot, the collective power of the citizens,” party spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said.

“It’s only when president Chamisa says there is cause to worry that we should then start to worry, so far there isn’t anything of that sort. We are constantly making sure that our eye is on the ball.

“They (Zec) know who the MDC Alliance is. There will be no confusion, remember when (MDC-T vice-president Thokozani) Khupe purported to run away with the name MDC just before the 2018 election, was anybody confused when it came to voting?”

Party vice-president Tendai Biti added: “Those who are pushing us are desperate, but of course, we will consult our people in due course and we will make the right decisions in the best interest of the people of Zimbabwe.

“The MDC is a brand that was built over 20 years. We can’t be forced into a script that we have not written. We can’t be forced to have a dinner that we don’t know who has cooked it.”

The country will on March 26 hold by-elections to fill over 100 council and parliamentary seats left vacant after Mwonzora recalled MDC Alliance councillors and legislators.-newsday

Minor Dies From Bee Attack

By A Correspondent- The one-year-six months old Rutenga minor who was attacked by a swarm of bees on the afternoon of January 13, died upon admission at Neshuro District Hospital hours after the vicious attack.

Praise Mombeyarara, who was with her mother on their way to Rutenga Bus Stop reportedly fell from her back after a swarm of bees suddenly attacked them near the Netone area.

An eyewitness who was together with Praise’s mother, who also suffered some bee bites told TellZim News that the insects were provoked by some kids before making a surprise attack on them as they were passing.

“I was together with Praise’s mother when we were suddenly attacked by the bees. Her child who was on her back fell during the attack and the bees ended up shifting to the minor engulfing her as they stung her all over the body,” said the lady who identified herself as Mai Archford.

Roving their vehicles around the helpless minor, some motorists tried all but in vain to rescue the child from further attacks.

The hovering bees ended up penetrating through the helpless crying minor’s mouth, attacking everyone daring to come closer.

As the crowd struggled to chase the bees, the girl’s father who was immediately telephoned, rushed to the scene where he used some burning tyres to disperse the bees but they had already caused fatal harm on the minor.

The minor together with her mother were rushed to Rutenga Clinic and then to a local private surgery before being referred to Neshuro District Hospital where the child died upon admission.

By the time of writing, Praise’s mother was still admitted at the District Hospital while burial arrangements for the minor were being progress

Gvt Meets Civil Servants Over Salaries

By A Correspondent- The  National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC), which comprises Government and civil servants’ representative body, the Apex Council met on the 14th of January 2022 over workers’ salaries.

Workers have for the past two years been pressing the government to restore their 2018 salaries that were denominated in United States Dollars.

They argue that inflation that has continued unabated eroded their salaries hence the need to restore their 2018 salaries that were around US$500 for teachers. They currently earn an equivalent of about US$100.

The recent meeting agreed that the workers’ grievances were genuine hence the need to address the request to find a long-lasting solution to the salary issue as an urgent matter.

We present an update on the NJNC meeting:

The much-awaited NJNC first meeting of 2022 finally took place today. The meeting which happened against the backdrop of Government having pledged to pay the USD 75 COVID -19 allowance In hard currency saw the workers request that Government concede to their long-standing demand to pay their salaries USD.

In light of the above, the Government team appreciated the workers’ reasons for sticking to their position of a non-inflationary and sustainable solution to the salary circus, upon which they asked for time out to consult with their principals.

It was also agreed that this was an urgent matter and that the NJNC reconvenes In the shortest time poss

Title Deed Fraudsters On The Prowl, Check If you Still Own Your Property

If you own a vacant or an unoccupied property in Zimbabwe my suggestion is verify if you still own that property. With the Zimbabwean property market being dominated by absent buyers, due to over four million Zimbabweans who are now scattered all over the world. Zimbabwe’s fraudsters have found a niche in the market and are now using technology for identity theft and then executing title deed fraud.

Title deed fraud occurs when someone steals your identity, forges your name on a title deed, and takes title to your property. While it may seem that it should be a simple matter to get your home back after becoming a victim of deed fraud, nothing in the law is very simple. The cost involved are high and it is a very stressful process.

No property buyer wants to discover they have been involved in a fraudulent property buying transaction. But unfortunately in Zimbabwe, forged deeds and fraudulent title transfers are happening far more often than ordinary people believe. Title deed fraud is not a new idea but has been amplified by the use of new technology. This problem has been around for decades, most commonly with vacant properties and especially involving deceased property owners, but is now on the increase and populated due to areas with a large numbers of vacant, unoccupied properties leaving property owners and investors at risk.

There are several ways that these fraudsters fraudulently acquire your properties, there is a perception that the real estate seller, the lawyer is involved, but that is not always the case. The fraudster obtain a copy of your title deed, a Zimbabwean title deed consist of the name of the property owner, the national identity number. They use these details to embed them on a fake national identity (ID) card which is then produced as proof of ownership to an estate agent and as the norm real estate agencies work with lawyers.

The lawyer will verify the owner of the property with the deed office when there is a request for a sale. The details of the deed and the ID details will be identical, using the same ID the fraudster opens a bank account which will receive the proceeds of the loots when a transaction is executed. With the duplicate national ID and bank account now setup in the owners name, this is then used to sell the house. When the property is then sold to the new owner by the person impersonating, the property title deed at the deeds offices are then updated making them the new legal owner. This is done without the owner of the property sometimes not even knowing.

There are also corrupt real estate agents, lawyers and employees at the deeds office and this is common knowledge due the the publications in the media over the years who are participants in these criminal activities.

If you own or are in the process of buying a property you could potentially be targeted, but some homeowners are more at risk than others. You are more at risk of title deed fraud if your Property is left vacant, property is rented out you live overseas it does not have a mortgage against it your identity has been stolen
it is not registered with the deeds office.

Savvy fraudsters are able to forge documents, commit fraud, and steal the title deed to your property, sell the property to someone else and reap the proceeds. They sometimes use their fraudulent ownership to access a lending tool and extract the home’s equity, leaving you in debt that may lead you to death due to the stress involved. There is no better time to check if you still own your property than now title deed fraudsters are on the increase.

Divisions Haunt War Veterans

By A Correspondent- Divisions have rocked the War Veterans Welfare Pressure Group (WVWPG) after it emerged that some disgruntled members were plotting to form a splinter group.

Reports suggest that disgruntled members are working with some politicians to form a splinter association.

WVWPG chairperson Amos Sigauke blamed some “outsiders” for taking advantage of disgruntled war veterans to advance their political interests and cause divisions in the association. Sigauke told NewsDay Weekender:

There are some members who are being used by other people from outside, who have some political agendas to distract the purpose of the group.

However, I can say there are no divisions within the pressure group. Our members are united. WVWPG is not even a registered organisation, hence claims of plans to form an independent alliance are baseless.

But in one audio clip that was posted on the war veterans WhatsApp group, a member of WVWPG, Shoorai Nyamangondo, confirmed the divisions. Nyamangondo said in the recording:

Since we started bringing up accusations against each other, we are now deviating from our main focus of the group. No one is now talking about the welfare of the war veterans who were arrested.

Some WVTWPG members were arrested in Harare following a protest they staged, where they accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government of neglecting them.

Police blocked them from submitting a petition to Mnangagwa for a review of their pension earnings.-newsday

RG’s Office Processing 40 IDs A Day

By A Correspondent- Bulawayo residents have accused  officials at the Registrar-General (RG) Office in the city of poor service amid claims they were only processing 40 national identification documents per day.

Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA) chairperson Ambrose Sibindi said residents were facing serious challenges in acquiring identity documents.

“The issue of acquiring national IDs is a matter of serious concern that needs to be addressed as the offices here only process IDs for less than 40 people per day,” Sibanda claimed.

Sibindi said it was the right of every citizen to have an ID, adding that the poor service was promoting a culture of corruption as desperate residents were now forced to pay bribes to access the documents.

BPRA secretary for administration Thembelani Dube said residents were being robbed of their right to own national documents.

“The level of underperformance by the department in issuing IDs is alarming. Residents are being disenfranchised from their right to have identity documents.

“This snowball effect affects private candidates who intend to sit for examinations and new prospective voters as they fail to register at the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission,” Dube said.

Contacted for comment, Home Affairs minister Kazembe Kazembe said the ministry would look into the matter.

“I will ask the RG to address the situation as a matter of urgency,” he said.

Recent reports said the RG’s Office had stopped issuing plastic identity cards due to lack of materials.-Newsday

Zanu PF In Vote Buying Ahead Of March By-Elections

By Zanu PF’s Mutare province has launched campaigns for the March by-elections, dishing out fertilizers to prospective voters.

In Manicaland, there are two vacant seats in the National Assembly in Dangamvura/Chikanga and Mutasa South constituencies.

The province has seven vacant seats in the Mutare council.

Addressing scores of Zanu supporters in ward on Thursday, Mutare district co-ordinating committee (DCC) chairperson Binali Yard confirmed that the ruling party had kick-started its by-election campaigns.

“We are launching our by-elections campaign today (Thursday) without candidates. We are waiting for the party leadership to guide us on the subject of candidates,” Yard said.

“We are giving you fertilizers. Put it to good use.”

Zanu PF has been accused of vote-buying in the past. Food-for-votes has been cited as the party’s favourite strategy during the electioneering period. NewsDay is reliably informed that the province has already endorsed some candidates to represent the party.

Sources in Mutare said central committee member Esau Mupfumi was endorsed by the provincial leadership to represent the party in the Dangamvura/Chikanga constituency.

Mupfumi is the area’s former MP.

The seat fell vacant after MDC Alliance MP Prosper Mutseyami was recalled from Parliament last year by MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora.

In Mutasa South constituency, Zanu PF will be represented by Misheck Mugadza.

Passion Java Faces Arrest, No One Is Above The Above

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | Last week the social media was once again cursed by a man of god with a small letter g. The man is a crowd puller and indeed he has brushed shoulders with the head of state.

The man is Passion Java who has thrived on controversy. I personally respect him for being a patriot but whole heartedly despise him for being over excited. He is over excited as to make jokes on God the creator. That we can not judge him it is between him and God.

Passion Java after grabbing cop’s cap at a road block

Passion Java has been accepted in the arms of President Mnangagwa and indeed he has been so helpful to the youth and emerging business people. For that Java is passionately respected.

However in his excitement Passion Java has placed himself to be above the law. Maybe he needs to learn serious lessons from cde Owen Mudha Ncube. No one is above the law.

Java should be castigated for thinking that he is so clever or important that he does not need to obey the law. I’m not sure why you’d want to substitute a single word for the concept of being “above the law.” If someone or something is “above the law”, unlike everyone else they’re not subject to the law’s reach or application. Not surprisingly, it is not an idea that is generally well received by most people. A fair and equitable legal system should have well-defined laws that apply equally to all regardless of who they are or whom they know.

Historically, the sovereign was considered “above the law.” Some immunities still exist, including sovereign or crown immunity; foreign state immunity, and diplomatic immunity. Depending on the jurisdiction in question, sovereign or crown immunity may have been eliminated or substantially reduced by statute. As well, there may be specific exemptions provided in legislation, which may exempt the application of specific laws to designated individuals, corporations or associations.
Last week Passion Java cursed the social media with his photo putting on a police hat. Java approached a roadblock where he grabbed a police cap from a woman constable and he put it on before he paused for a photo and posted it on several social media platforms.

According to the Armorial Bearings, Names, Uniforms and Badges Act, it is an offence in Zimbabwe for a civilian to wear military or police uniforms.
Section 29 of the Act says a civilian convicted of wearing a police or military uniform may be fined or sentenced to at least two years in prison.

Uniforms of the Police Force or the Defence Forces shall not be worn by persons who
are not members of any such Force.

Passion Java is not a sacred cow and must be taken down town to explain his over excitement.
His behaviour was appalling disgusting and totally contemptuous and disrespecting. Considering that Java stripped the officer manning a roadblock his childish behaviour must not be allowed to pass. The psychological influence of the police uniform suggests that clothing has a powerful impact on how people are perceived, and this goes for police officers as well. If a police officer is stripped of his valuable signature by a civilian then indeed things fall apart.

The behaviour of Java must never be ignored. We do agree that Java is a staunch supporter of the youth but that is not a passport to crime.

A police force is identified by its uniform. People must learn to respect the uniform.
Most people can identify a police officer by the official police uniform. When citizens on a busy street are in need of help, they scan the crowds of pedestrians looking for the distinctive uniform of a police officer. Drivers who come to an intersection occupied by a person in a police uniform usually willingly submit to that person’s hand directions. Criminals usually curb their unlawful behavior when they spot a uniformed police officer in the area. Many parents teach their children to respect and trust a person in the police uniform.

Police academy recruits relish the day when they may finally wear their official police uniforms.

What is so special about a uniform that is often made of cheap polyester and is usually hot and uncomfortable to wear?
The crisp uniform of the police officer conveys power and authority. When a police officer puts on his or her uniform the officer is perceived in a very different way by the public. He or she is viewed as embodying each person’s stereotypes about all police officers.

That clothing has a powerful impact on how people are perceived, and this goes for the police officer as well. The uniform of a police officer has been found to have a profound psychological impact on those who view it.

Even slight alterations to the style of the uniform will change how citizens will perceive the officer.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police uniform is a tradition as old as the field of law enforcement itself. The ZRP has its roots from the British South Africa Police which was established in 1896 as three separate Bechuanaland, Matabeland and Mashonaland Divisions.  The latter two were amalgamated in 1903.

The force’s origins evolved from the British South Africa Company Police functioning as a mounted infantry unit serving during and after the occupations of both Mashonaland and Matabeleland.  The service took on a more civilian policing role following the Second Boer War and and remained the first line of defence as a law enforcement organisation up until its renaming (the Zimbabwe Republic Police) in July 1980 a few months following Zimbabwean Independence.

The police put a great deal of respect on their uniform because the uniform actually psychologically influences how officers are perceived by the public.

Passion Java disrespected the police. To disrespect someone is to act in an insulting way toward them. Disrespect is all about not showing respect. Actually, it’s about showing the opposite of respect, by acting rude, impolite, and offensive.

Java was pertinent impolite to the lady officer. He was inconsiderate rude to say the least his actions exhibited the thoughtless uncalled for uncivil actually ungracious unmannered or unmannerly behaviour which portrays the ZRP in a discourteous manner.
Passion Java acted improperly in an incorrect and indecent indecorous unseemly manner. His behaviour was arrogant bumptious and conceited haughty imperious peremptory pompous embarrassing way. For this he must be brought to the level of reality and face the wrath of the law to prohibit the like minded buffoons.

One powerful clue to a person’s background is clothing. Clothing serves as a mental shortcut to identifying a person’s sex, status, group membership, legitimacy, authority and occupation.
Uniform and physical appearance are very important in the initial development of social relationships.

Uniform has been found to have an even greater effect on making first impressions than personality. Uniform has a significant psychological influence on people’s perceptions.

The uniform worn by a police officer also elicits stereotypes about that human being’s status, authority, attitudes and motivations. The police uniform serves to identify a person as one vested with the powers of the state to arrest and use force. The uniform also serves to establish order and conformity within the ranks of those who wear it by suppressing individuality.

The psychological and physical impact of the police uniform should not be underestimated. Depending on the background of the citizen, the police uniform can elicit emotions ranging from pride and respect, to fear and anger.

So associating the police uniform with Passion Java’s head is total insult.
It is therefore imperative that Java be treated as the law would expect.

By A Correspondent-The Zimbabwe Republic Police have not arrested controversial preacher Passion Java for wearing a police uniform without the authority of the service.

An image of Java wearing a female police cap has been circulating on social media since mid-week.

According to the Police Act, it is an offence for a civilian to put on police gear without the authority of the ZRP commissioner-general.

On Wednesday, the police issued a statement saying they were investigating Java, but nothing has happened.

Java is a Zanu PF sympathiser and is moving around with the party officials campaigning for President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Matabeleland Chiefs Press Mnangagwa For A Gukurahundi Apology

By-The Matabeleland traditional leadership said that the Zanu PF government should give a public apology for the Gukurahundi massacres it engineered in the early 9180.

The former President Robert Mugabe and Emmerson Mnangagwa administration unleashed armed soldiers on civilians in Matabeleland and Midlands provinces.

The atrocities claimed over 20 000 innocent people.

President Mnangagwa claims to have opened dialogue on the emotive subject but is not willing to give an apology for the mass killings.

Matabeleland South provincial chiefs’ assembly chairperson Chief Masendu, speaking on behalf of traditional leaders in the province, said Gukurahundi could not be wished away. He said:
Chiefs are the rightful people to handle the Gukurahundi issue because they belong to the people. We stay with them; they talk to us. What they want is an apology and compensation.
Government must agree and openly apologise to the people. No other person can come from outside whom people can understand and relate to their issues confidently beside the chiefs.
Masendu condemned the recent destruction of the Gukurahundi memorial plaque at Bhalagwe in Maphisa, Matebeleland South province, and called on the government to bring the culprits to book.
The plaque was erected by villagers in memory of victims of the Gukurahundi massacres buried inside the Bhalagwe mass graves.

Ngarivhume Deserves Freedom

The trial of Jacob Ngarivhume

Fungai Muridzo
The trial of Jacob Ngarivhume has become a classic example of political persecution by the ZANU PF regime.

Two years after his arrest on some flimsy charges of inciting public violence, the state is yet to gather enough evidence to prosecute him. It is now absolutely clear that there was no crime committed by Ngarivhume.

Today he appeared again at Harare Magistrates Court for another kangaroo court session. He was shunted from one court to another as no Magistrate seemed prepared to grant him his long overdue freedom.

The special anti-corruption prosecutors assigned by the state on the case could not be located! A new Magistrate who finally set for the case was clueless as to how the case was to proceed.

The defence demanded that the case be removed from further remand. This will be made on the next court appearance on 17 January 2022. Surely its circus. ZANU PF has no shame. Ngarivhume deserves his freedom!

Mwonzora Not At All Concerned About Mako Welfare

14-01-2022

Douglas Mwonzora is not sincere when he says he is “happy to see Mako”. We all know that Mwonzora is a right hand man of Emmerson Mnangagwa – the very same man who incarcerated Cde Mako for more than 10 months.

Mwonzora dines and wine with the very same evil men and women who jailed Makomborero Haruzivishe for speaking against corruption and abductions.

We all know what Mwonzora represents. He corruptly seized our party headquarters and recalled people’s representatives.

On the other hand Cde Mako is a proponent of people power and people power respects people’s voice and will. By recalling people’s representatives Mwonzora trampled on people’s will.

Mwonzora is a complete antithesis of what Cde Mako represents, so when he is saying he is happy to see Mako out of those prison walls surely it’s a Judas kiss.

If Mwonzora is sincere about Cde Mako’s release, why then did he not utter a single word demanding for Cde Mako’s release in one of his useless State House intercourse with Mnangagwa.

Despite traversing up and down the whole breath of Zimbabwe trying to reverse the will of the people, Mwonzora never bothered to make a short trip to Chikurubi Maximum Prison or Harare Remand Prison to see Cde Mako.

And now he tells us he is happy to see him in good health! Is he genuine Zimbabwe?

By A Correspondent- A plan by the government to criminalise industrial action by health professionals, among other proposed changes, will trigger massive skills flight of medical staff, a parliamentary watchdog has warned.

Zimbabwe, which endured two years of economic contraction and growing political intolerance, is battling an exodus of health professionals, thereby paralysing the already weakened health delivery system.

Official statistics show that last year 2 000 nurses fled the country for greener pastures as the economy continues to wobble.

The authorities have already pressed the panic button and are now making frantic efforts to stop the skills flight.

The United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand have over the years been some of the preferred destinations for health professionals such as doctors and nurses.

Veritas, a local watchdog and think-tank on parliamentary business, said proposed changes to a law governing the health profession will have an adverse effect on the southern African country.

Zimbabwe is battling a fourth wave of Covid-19 infections and deaths and experts say the pandemic has already strained the country’s weakened health delivery system.

Health professionals in the private sector do not fall under the public health service, and the Act does not apply to them.

“The Bill is unlikely to cow government health professionals into accepting their unsatisfactory conditions of service and refraining from strike action,” Veritas says.

“Instead it may persuade them that the government is not prepared to listen to their complaints and intends to resort to coercion. The Bill may therefore drive more of them to seek their fortunes outside the country. Altogether this is not a satisfactory Bill.”

Clause 5 of the Bill will insert a new section into the Act to restrict the right of members of the Health Service to engage in collective job action — which essentially means going on strike.

All members of the governing bodies of unions that incite or organise collective job action in breach of the new section will be guilty of an offence and liable to a fine of level 10 (currently Z$70 000) or three years’ imprisonment or both.

The Health Service Amendment Bill was published in the Government Gazette on 23 July last year.

It has been presented in the National Assembly and is currently being considered by the Parliamentary Legal Committee.

According to its memorandum, the Bill is intended to align the Health Service Act to the Constitution; it also “discusses the parameters of collective job action by the Health Service.”

Last month, Constantino Chiwenga, the country’s Health minister and Vice-President, announced that the government is in talks with the United Nations and other multilateral agencies to help compensate Harare for training costs for health professionals who left the country for better employment prospects abroad.-Newshawks

According to Bushiri, Apostle Eric Bhuka was shot dead when he was  preparing fpr a Sunday service.

In a statement Bushiri said:

I am greatly pained and grieved to learn of the tragic shooting to death of Apostle Eric Bhuka, one of our ECG Pastors in South Africa.

What’s even troubling is that our Apostle was shot at the prayer mountains, where he went to pray, preparing for the Great Entrance this Sunday.

I celebrate you, Apostle Eric. You came, you preached, you won souls and, at your journey’s end, you have gone back to where we will all return after finishing the mission of preaching Jesus Christ.

Bunjira Devastated By Warriors Loss To Malawi

Former Warriors forward Alois Bunjira, has said he is devastated following Zimbabwe’s 2-1 loss to Malawi in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals this Friday in Cameroon.

Zimbabwe looked set to win the match when Ishmael Wadi headed home Onesmo Bhasera to give the Warriors a short-lived lead.

Malawi equalised almost immediately and scored again in the second half to secure the crucial three points.

Pindula News spoke to Bunjira, a ZIFA presidential aspirant, after the match to get his comment on the match. Bunjira could not hide his frustration over the result.

“We lost and I’m devastated. If we can’t beat teams like Malawi, then we don’t deserve to progress to the next phase. We are where we deserve to be, that is going back home.

Zimbabwe has never been in an easy group than this one but this loss shows that we have a huge problem. Football in Zimbabwe needs a fresh start, I mean everything to do with football.”

He added:
I don’t know, maybe we don’t have the same school of thought as the technical team. I believe team selection is one of the things we got wrong, maybe I am biased because of the way I played back in the day.

We needed (Kuda) Mahachi more than any other player who was available today. We needed a Khama Billiat-type of a player who would make defenders run thereby removing pressure from our strikers.

His remarks resonate with those of Benjani Mwaruwari who is working as an analyst for the AFCON tournament with leading South African sports television channel SuperSport TV.

The former Manchester City player, who was supposed to be in the Warriors team but missed out after contracting COVID-19, said a playmaker was needed.

He singled out Ngezi Platinum Stars player, Denver Mukamba as one player that could have given Zimbabwe better wins.- Pindula News

CAF Rules Out Mali, Tunisia Replay

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has made a final decision on the controversial Afcon 2021 Group F game between Tunisia and Mali.

The football body received an official complaint from the Tunisian team about the conduct of referee Janny Sikazwe during the match.

The Zambian official blew the full-time whistle with five minutes of regulation left to play, and after protests, he resumed the game but ended it again in the 89th minute.

Protests continued from the Tunisian team, and CAF officials at the stadium then ordered both teams to get back on to the pitch and finish the remaining minute plus the additional time with a new referee.

However, Tunisia players didn’t turn up and decided to file an official complaint to CAF.

In a statement, CAF announced that it has turned down Tunisia’s protest and confirmed that the match will not be replayed.

The statement reads: “The Organising Committee of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021 met today to deliberate on the match between Tunisia and Mali played yesterday, 12 January 2022.

“After examining the protest of Tunisia and all the match officials report, the Organising Committee decided the following:

– To dismiss the protest lodged by the Tunisian team.

About Malaria Vaccines

Malaria vaccine a beacon of hope in the fight against a range of infectious diseases

Just as health workers have been guiding lights in these difficult times, so has the transformative potential of science.

WHO’s recommendation of the widespread use of a malaria vaccine for children at risk, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, marked a milestone moment for child health and malaria control.

The recommendation was based on results from an ongoing pilot programme of the RTS,S vaccine in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi that has reached more than 800 000 children since 2019.

The vaccine has reinvigorated the fight against malaria, which claimed the lives of over 600 000 people in Africa in 2020. Children under the age of 5 represented 80% of these deaths.

Even before the pandemic struck, there were signs that after years of phenomenal gains, progress was stalling.

Other major achievements relating to immunization include the introduction of a licensed Ebola vaccine and launch of a landmark new global plan to tackle meningitis.

Meanwhile, we released new evidence that more countries are following WHO’s advice on the steps to take when HIV drug resistance reaches critical thresholds. This is an important step forward in the global fight against antimicrobial resistance, about which WHO continues to raise the alarm, calling for action on innovation and within the food system.

Dementia

WHO signals alarm about dementia challenge
Individuals can do a lot themselves to stay healthy but they can’t do it all on their own.

WHO released its first report on the global status of the public health response to dementia, showing that only a quarter of countries worldwide have a national policy, strategy or plan for supporting people with dementia and their families.

These gaps are increasingly concerning, as the number of people living with dementia is growing.

WHO estimates that more than 55 million people (8.1% of women and 5.4% of men over 65 years) are living with dementia.

As life expectancy increases worldwide, this number is estimated to rise to 78 million by 2030 and to 139 million by 2050.

To drive change, the report highlights the urgent need to strengthen support at national level, for both people with dementia and those who care for them. Many countries lack earmarked funding in national health budgets, leaving significant gaps in treatment and care, and do not comprehensively involve people with dementia and their carers and families in developing policies. These are among the areas for change.

WHO is also developing a Dementia Research Blueprint, to structure research efforts and stimulate new initiatives, helping to overcome challenges related to past unsuccessful clinical trials for treatments and the high costs of research and development.

Chiwenga Delays Opening Of Schools

By A Correspondent- The Government has delayed the opening of schools and said that they could be opened in the next three weeks.

This was announced by acting President Constantino Chiwenga in a statement Friday.
He said:
Schools be given at least one week after the next two-weeks lockdown extension, to put preventive public health measures in place before the commencement of the general school calendar depending on the prevailing Coved-19 situation at that time.
The former military boss said teachers and students will be required to wear face masks while in class while all eligible teachers and students are encouraged to be vaccinated for COVID- 19 before the opening of schools.
Chiwenga also urged enforcement officers to conduct regular assessments of compliance in learning institutions, at least on a weekly basis.

The Government late last year delayed the implementation of the 2022 general school calendar indefinitely saying the country was still battling with the Omicron coronavirus variant that is characterised by high infection rates.
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (MoPSE) had scheduled schools to resume on the 10th of January.

Four Zimbabwean Inmates In SA Dramatic Jail Break

By-Five inmates have escaped from custody after a group of heavily armed men freed them from a police truck transporting them to court, the police said on Friday.

SAPS spokesperson in Gauteng, Brigadier Brenda Muridili told TV channel Newzroom Afrika that the SAPS officers transporting the inmates to the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court were overpowered on the way.

Muridili urged members of the public to be very careful as those suspects are armed and very dangerous. He said:

The accused are all Zimbabwean nationals and their names are Nkhululeko Nkomo; Robert Hlatshwayo; Thulani Dube; Augustine Moyo; Mbongiseni Mkandla. We are currently having a team that has been launched so that they can do a manhunt and find the escapees.

The police were outnumbers. It was two vehicles that were involved in this incident. One blocked the police vehicle from the front and a number of armed suspects, with rifles, then indicated to the police officers that they must stop the vehicle.

Police later clarified to IOL that only four were Zimbabweans and the other, Robert Hlatswayo was a South African. She said people from another vehicle that was behind the government truck broke the lock and the inmates fled.

The escapees were going to court on charges including possession of unlicensed firearms, business robbery, attempted murder and shoplifting. They are aged between 30 and 45.

The SAPS has appealed to community members to help them with information to locate the wanted suspects.

Last year, four “dangerous” prisoners escaped from custody in Limpopo after disarming a police officer.

He said seven prisoners were being transported from Polokwane Correctional Centre to Mokopane, for sentencing, when four of them allegedly escaped.

Trial Of Jacob Ngarivhume A Circus

By Fungai Muridzo

The trial of Jacob Ngarivhume

ZEC In Another Controversy Ahead Of March By-Election

By-The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) said it was not automatic that a registered voter is drafted onto the voter’s roll as they have to authenticate registrants’ identities.

The electoral body said it meticulously verifies all those who register to vote before including them on the voter’s roll.

Responding to questions from the media at a Press conference in Victoria Falls yesterday, Zec chairperson Justice Priscilla
Chigumba said some registered voters are not included on the voter’s roll because of problems with their national documents.
“In some instances what we discover is that when we do our verification process, we discover that some people are double registrants at two different centres. And we might discover that there are four pictures with different names, but the same ID numbers. Which means one or two or three of them will be flagged for not having authentic ID documents,” said Justice Chigumba.

“So please understand that having a voter registration slip is not proof that your name is on the voter’s roll. It’s proof that you have registered to vote and we then vet your documents and you have no idea the number of issues that arise. It is not surprising that out of 50 people who register, a lot of them will have issues and their names will not automatically go onto the voter’s roll until those issues are resolved. Some of the issues are easily resolved and some issues are not easily resolved.”
She said the electoral body will start cleaning the voter’s roll before starting the delimitation process.
Justice Chigumba said the delimitation process determines the number of constituencies each province will have ahead of the 2023 harmonised polls.
It has previously been reported that Matabeleland region risks losing some constituencies due to voter apathy, and Justice Chigumba urged the public to register to vote so that they do not lose constituencies ahead of the 2023 polls.

She said Zec will deploy mobile registration teams even to remote areas so that more people can register to vote.
“Delimitation is informed by the number of registered voters in each constituency. So, if we increase the number of registered voters, that is one way in which a province can avoid losing some constituencies if it has a high number of registered voters,” said Justice Chigumba.
“When we roll out the kit deployment plan for the voter registration, all those areas that were said to be remote and difficult to access, people cannot travel long distances to come to our permanent district offices, we will be sending mobile kits into those areas during specified times and dates, which will be advised in advance and hopefully we will get registrants coming up in high numbers to register. The solution to the problem is having more registrants coming up to register if they want to retain their seats.”
She said the delimitation exercise will be conducted after the census report is tabled in Parliament.
The national census will be conducted in April this year.
“The reason we will have the blitz in two stages, one in February and another in April, is that we want to clean the voter’s roll for the purposes of delimitation. Because we anticipate that the delimitation process will be started August 2022, which is when the final census report will be tabled before Parliament,” said Justice Chigumba.

“We do voter registration and start cleaning the data and determining who should be on the voter’s roll and who doesn’t have authentic documents. So, after the April voter registration blitz, that is the final blitz that we will use to have registered voters inform the delimitation process. But remember voter registration will continue.”

Mafume Takes July Moyo Head-On

By- Suspended Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume has approached the High Court challenging his fourth suspension.

The Nelson Chamisa’s MDC-Alliance senior member is seeking to have his suspension set aside and declared null and void.

He argues that the decision by Local Government Minister July Moyo is irrational.

Mafume was suspended late last year, and that was the fourth time that Moyo suspended the law expert without convening a disciplinary hearing.
Mafume was suspended when he had just returned to work after the expiry of his third suspension.

The MDC Alliance secretary for local government stands accused of criminal abuse of office.
In the latest suspension dated 17 December 2021, Moyo accused Mafume of committing gross misconduct and willful violation of the law. Wrote Moyo:
I have reasonable grounds for suspecting that you councillor Jacob Mafume has committed acts of gross misconduct, gross incompetence and willful violation of the law as referenced in subsection (1)(b)(c) and (e) and hereby suspend you with immediate effect.
Mafume described the latest suspension as childish adding that the Minister’s actions were affecting public service delivery. He added:
The Act allows the loser of the last election to supervise the winner, in this case, we beat ZANU PF in council elections but because they stole the presidential elections they are now supervising us using the Urban Councils Act.
This is so childish they are throwing toys and the baby out of the pram.
A few days before his latest suspension, Mafume wrote to the mayor, Stewart Mutizwa (MDC-T) and the town clerk Phakamile Moyo, accusing them of failing to respect the law on his return to the office.

Mwonzora Meets Chamisa Allies

By A Correspondent-MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora has met with two rival MDC-Alliance members at Harare magistrate’s Courts.

Mwonzora had a brief meeting with suspended Harare mayor Jacob Mafume and Makomborero Haruzivishe and said that he was happy meeting with the two.

Haruzivishe was recently released from remand prison after spending 9 months in custody over kidnapping and violence charges.

Speaking to journalists after the brief encounter, Mwonzora said the meeting “was cordial, respectful and pleasant.

” I was particularly happy to see Mako in good health. We can’t thank Professor (Lovemore) Madhuku enough for the great work he did,” he said.

Chiwenga Takes Over Power

By-Constantino Chiwenga is now the acting President after President Emmerson Mnangagwa has gone on his annual leave.

Mnangagwa’s leave will run until February 5 2022.

In a statement released this morning, Chief Secretary to the Office of the President and Cabinet, Dr Misheck Sibanda said Vice President General (Retired) Constantino Chiwenga will be Acting President.
“The Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Misheck Sibanda, wishes to advise that His Excellency the President Dr E.D Mnangagwa started his annual vacation yesterday, January 13 2022. His vacation, which runs until February 5 2022 will be spent in the country.
During this period, Honourable Vice President, General (Retired) Dr CGDN Chiwenga, is acting President,” reads the statement issued by Deputy Chief Secretary for Presidential Communications, Mr George Charamba.

Douglas Mwonzora An Enabler Of Mako’s Tormentors

How Passion Java Killed Roki

By Music Editor| Roki was once a super creative artist of international standards and his collection of hits is too telling. It includes his amapiano with DJ Stavo (UK) which was totally organic in both constructs and viewership.

So where did all this brilliance(see video) go? The whole story ended when Roki met a fake prophet and thought he would improve his career.

The latest observations strengthen legal action against Passion Java and Roki, as it becomes all too clear how the Java powered musician, stole, or better said, in academic words: plagiarized Ammara Brown’s 4 million view-Mukoko song, and bastardsized it into a West African gospo. Every attempt to repaint the stolen car, backfired and this so, dismally.

ZimEye music expert. Cucsman, throws several factors into the open, that are now criminal-litigation material.

Roki’s song has struggled for popularity resulting in the record label purchasing fake views on the YouTube channel.
Cucsman who is also the genius of the Ngaapinde song

https://youtu.be/RwWayfG4-Y0

together with the ZimEye editorial team challenge Roki and his producers over the following suspicious elements:

  1. The snare drum pattern which is totally identical to Ammara’s. The cha-cha, cha repeat which is the foremost distinctive feature in Mafuta, is the same introduced by Ammara 5 years ago.
  2. The lead guitar crescendo which is completely replicated across Roki’s song, a pattern that is exactly similar to the female singer’s hit song 5 years ago.
  1. The cord progression used by Roki, why is it exactly similar to Ammara’s.
  2. Coming down to the choreography, why is it that Roki hired an equal number of dancers, as Ammara: four? Is this a coincidence and not a notorious goal-in-cident? Yes of course Java’s is a church song, at least you meant it to be but did you have to copy everything, from melody, to drum pattern, and even the dance choreography?

These striking similarities, all of them falling upon each other in one hit, do they demonstrate creativity or daylight theft? Does Passion Java understand the criminal implications of plagiarism?

The match will be played at the Stade Omnisports de Bafaoussam and kicks off at 18:00 Zimbabwean time.

The Warriors went through their paces at the match venue last night under the watchful of Mapeza, with all 23 players registered by Zimbabwe for the continental football fiesta, taking part.

Captain Knowledge Musona, who had had symptoms of flu, took part in the practice session but a decision will be made today as to whether or not he will feature against the Flames.

Kundai Benyu has to pass a late fitness test to be able to feature this evening.

Musona and Benyu are the only problems the Mapeza-led technical team has ahead of the crucial clash.

The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) fulfilled its promise and gave the players the second batch of their allowances, in cash.

All players and officials tested negative for Covid-19.

Petros Mhari will retain his place in goal and Mapeza is not going to make any changes to the backline which played against Senegal.

He is however expected to start with Tino Kadewere upfront.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

At Least 5 People Die Daily In Road Traffic Accidents In Zim

By A Correspondent- At least five people die in road traffic accidents every 24 hours in Zimbabwe, giving the country the worst mortality rate in the Sadc region, with the Plumtree highway as one of the hotspots.

This is according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Road Safety Performance Review report of December 2021 that was launched in Harare on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development of Zimbabwe requested support of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety to carry out a national Road Safety Performance Review (RSPR) for Zimbabwe.

The support is provided through the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (Unece) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (Uneca) as a global initiative to assist governments to strengthen road safety management capacities of developing countries.

According to the report, Zimbabwe records an estimated 665 deaths and over 10 000 injuries per year due to road traffic accidents, with the Chivhu, Plumtree and Rusape highways having the worst mortality rates. A road accident occurs every 15 minutes in Zimbabwe and this represents a 35 percent increase in 10 years.

Zimbabwe has the highest road crash mortality rate among its neighbours — 35 per 100 000. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Global Road Safety Report of 2018, Botswana has the lowest road crash mortality rate of 23 per 100 000, followed by South Africa 25,9, Namibia 30 and Malawi 31.

The recently released Road Safety Performance Review report states that in eight years, between 2011 and 2019, there has been a 77 percent increase in the number of second-hand public and private vehicles in Zimbabwe from an estimated 800 000 to 1 500 000.

According to the report, Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) official statistics show an increase in road traffic crash fatalities of three percent between 2010 (1 291 fatalities) and 2019 (2  000 fatalities).

“Five people die every day on the roads in Zimbabwe and this translates to 153 persons killed per month. Estimates by TSCZ research in 2018 showed that the country loses about US$406 million annually from an average 40 000 road traffic accidents every year, and this is estimated to be almost three percent of the gross domestic product; estimated at US$14 billion,” read the report.

The recently rehabilitated, upgraded and modern Plumtree-Mutare-Plumtree highway, according to the report, leads in fatalities, where major national disasters occurred.

“Compared to the Beitbridge-Chirundu Road which is considered the worst and most busy of the two highway corridors in Zimbabwe, TSCZ reports that in 2016 the upgraded Plumtree-Harare Road recorded 367 crashes, while the Harare-Mutare section contributed 202: a total of 569 fatal crashes in a single year.”

“The Kwekwe national disaster on the Plumtree-Mutare Road on 3 March 2016 killed 31 people and injured 36. On the same road, another disaster in 2016 near Gweru killed 10 people and injured 13. The Rusape bus accident disaster on the same highway killed 50 people in 2018.”

Buses, according to the report, contribute half of the total road traffic accidents around the county.

“According to the WHO, drivers and passengers of the bus category account for 50 percent of the total fatalities recorded in 2017, followed by pedestrians at 16 percent. Drivers and passengers of four-wheeled cars and light vehicles contribute 13 percent, drivers of four-wheeled cars and light vehicles eight percent, riders of two or three-wheeled motorised cycles 6 percent, pedal cyclists’ four percent and drivers/passengers of heavy trucks three percent. The high numbers of bus-related fatalities show a need in this category, consisting of the poorest most vulnerable population.”

With regard to pedestrian vulnerability, WHO notes that an estimated 2 000 pedestrians were killed by motor vehicles between 2013 and 2016, while an estimated 30 000 were injured, giving an average 665 deaths and 10 000 injuries per year.

In 2021, Zimbabwe recorded 77 road-related deaths during the just-ended Christmas holidays, up from 67 recorded during the same period in 2020.

In November last year, two people died on the spot while scores were injured when a haulage truck and a Nyaradzo Funeral Services bus that was carrying mourners collided along the Bulawayo-Harare highway near Cement Siding.

The mourners were returning from Lower Gweru in the Midlands province after burying a relative when the bus driver is said to have encroached into oncoming traffic while trying to overtake.

The bus collided with the haulage truck that was carrying approximately 40 000 bricks.-statemedia

Mining Explosives Syndicate Busted

By A Correspondent- South African police have arrested a three-man syndicate, suspected to be Zimbabweans after they allegedly smuggled into the neighbouring country some mining explosives whose value was yet to be ascertained.

Provincial police Commissioner for Limpopo province Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe said the nationality of the three was still to be verified.

He said mining explosives have of late been used in South Africa to detonate ATMs at banks.

“Explosives of this nature were in the past found to have been used in ATM bombings at some places in the Province and the arrest of these suspects will potentially assist the police in curbing this crime,” said Liet Gen Hadebe.

“We Are Building Our Country And Leaving No-one Behind”: VP Chiwenga

By A Correspondent- The just-ended SADC Extraordinary Heads of State and Government summit in Lilongwe, Malawi managed to galvanise the region’s leadership to realise the importance of unity in dealing with issues of peace and security.

Held at the magnificent Bingu wa Mutharika International Conference Centre in Lilongwe, the summit’s main agenda was to review progress of the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM), deployed in that country to combat terrorism and violent extremism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.

The Extraordinary Heads of State and Government summit was preceded by the Council of Ministers Meeting and a meeting of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation whose Troika Organ is currently chaired by President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa.

Zimbabwe was represented at the Council of Ministers Meeting by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Dr Frederick Shava, Defence and War Veterans Minister Oppah Muchinguri.

Vice President Dr Constantino Guveya Dominic Nyikadzino Chiwenga (CGDN) represented President Mnangagwa at the summit that took place on 12 January 2022 where binding resolutions regarding the conflict in Mozambique were passed.

The Herald Deputy Editor, Lovemore Ranga Mataire (L.R.M), caught up with Vice President Chiwenga (CGDN) at the close of the meeting as he departed for home at the Kamuzu International Airport where he said Zimbabwe was fully behind the regional body’s decision to extend the mandate of the SADC Standby Force Mission to Mozambique (SAMIM) for three-months.

***

L.R.M: Vice President Chiwenga, you had a hectic day today where you joined other leaders at the Extraordinary Heads of State and Government summit to review the mandate of the SADC Standby Force in Mozambique. What can you say are the major take-aways of the meeting?

CGDN:  The summit went on very well, starting with the Officials meeting (Council of Ministers Meeting) and going into the Troika Organ itself, which met yesterday. Everything went on very well. Today, things were very smooth and the issues which are a major problem in Cabo Delgado in Mozambique were ironed out well. There was unanimous agreement on all the issues. I was quite happy with the outcome of the meeting.

L.R.M:  What is Zimbabwe’s contribution to the SADC military mission in Mozambique?

CGDN: You know as Zimbabwe we are contributing a lot. His Excellency, the President has already said we are contributing in terms of training. I think he has already mentioned something about that. Training both military and the police. We are also contributing in terms of provision of food to those who have been displaced. So we are contributing and remember Mozambique is our neighbour.

L.R.M: One of the resolutions that came out of the Extraordinary summit was to extend the military mandate in Cabo Delgado and also to convene an international conference to invite partners in terms of raising the needed resources. What is your view on the extension and the planned international conference?

CGDN: The three-months extension is quite correct because we want to assess the situation. It would be suicidal for one to withdraw and then tomorrow you are told there are problems.

There have been a number of groups and people who have been saying they are helping the Mozambicans. We want everybody who wants to help to come together, so that we all together help one country and not have these ones doing their own thing and others doing their own things.

L.R.M: President Chakwera of Malawi also emphasised the need for those that imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe to remove them because they said the sanctions have a knock-on effect on other regional countries. But the same calls have been made before. In your view, what should be done to ensure that these calls come to reality and those that imposed sanctions remove them?

CGDN: This is why we have said we, Zimbabweans, are going to build our own country. No one is going to build Zimbabwe for us except ourselves. We Zimbabweans, we are going to build our country and we are going to leave no one behind and no place behind. So let them have their hallucinations.

L.R.M: Thank you so much Vice President for your time.

Transporter Challenges ZIMRA’s Vehicle Seizure

By A Correspondent- A Harare based transporter has challenged the seizure of his vehicle by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) on allegations of smuggling goods into the country.

In papers filed at the High Court yesterday under case number FA1/22, Luckson Matondo said Zimra, through its officers, seized his empty truck which was parked in a public space.

Matondo said after forfeiture of the truck, and with the aid of the police, Zimra arrested his driver Nyasha Mupambiri who was acquitted by a Beitbridge magistrate for lack of evidence.

“So far Matondo understands and strongly believes that the judgment of the Beitbridge magistrate that heard the allegations and dismissed the charges shall prevail because in all material instances, the truck did not transport alleged goods and Zimra failed to produce the alleged goods to substantiate its claims,” he submitted in court.

Zimra alleges that Matondo’s vehicle was used to smuggle alcoholic beverages into the country prejudicing the State of US$33 481,56 and $607 515,97.

Matondo denies the charges and accuses Zimra of acting as police, jury and executioner at the same time.

“No list of the alleged goods was given and no calculations of the figures given were shown. At all material times, the respondent failed to physically produce the alleged goods or specifically the alleged alcoholic beverages which the vehicle is to have been used in the smuggling of goods into the country,” Matondo wrote.-newsday

Olivia Muchena Launches Book

By A Correspondent- Former Higher and Tertiary Education minister Olivia Muchena will today launch a book for aspiring politicians titled: Next Generation African Political Leaders: The Power of Preparation, at a Harare hotel.

In a statement yesterday, publishers Africa Olea said the book was intended to provide concise reference to the practicalities of public office, life and leadership.

“It is short and easy to understand as an illustrated work of simple English prose. Infographics are used throughout to ease the learning process,” the publishers said.

“The book was a response to uniquely African challenges encountered when entering politics without training in leadership, politics and governance. Simultaneously, it counters commonly held perceptions of politics as a violent, evil and dirty game unsuitable for Christians and otherwise decent citizens.”

Muchena said, in the book, she shares the need for deliberate, intentional preparation for participation and service in politics and government particularly at leadership levels.

“I share a personal conviction, as a born-again believer, that it is desirable, imperative and possible for Christians to be salt and light in politics and government. This will help them to avoid dangers borne out of zeal without knowledge. Speaking from personal experience, I can confirm that in politics, people do perish because of lack of knowledge,” she said.

Muchena once served as Science and Technology Development minister as well as Women’s Affairs minister. She was part of the so-called former Vice- President Joice Mujuru’s loyalists who were fired from government by the late Robert Mugabe in 2014.-newsday

By-Elections Blow For Mwonzora

By A Correspondent- MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora has suffered a blow in Bulawayo after four members chosen as party candidates for the March 26 by-elections declined the offer and pledged their allegiance to a faction led by deputy president Thokozani Khupe.

Dorcas Nyoni from ward 19 in Magwegwe, former councillor Sheilla Musonda and Annie Nyathi both from Makokoba ward 8 and Sibusisiwe Adams from Mpopoma (ward 9) wrote to the party asking that their names be withdrawn from the candidates list.

Instead, the quartet pledged their allegiance to Khupe’s faction, exposing deep-rooted factionalism within the MDC- T.

In a letter to MDC-T provincial secretary-general Gandi Mudzingwa, Nyoni said: “I do not belong to any of your structures. I hope you will assist by removing my name,” Nyoni wrote.

Yesterday, Nyoni told Southern Eye that she did not recognise Mwonzora’s presidency.

“I do not want to embarrass myself, it’s better to continue with my work in council than to get two votes. I cannot stand for Mwonzora. They do not know me and I have never attended any of their meetings,” Nyoni said.

“I am not part of them and I won’t do that. Of course, I am popular in the ward, but I cannot represent Mwonzora.”

Adams told Southern Eye that she withdrew her candidature after realising that Mwonzora’s approach was unprocedural.

“I was supposed to be elevated to provincial secretary when our colleagues who include the then chairperson Gift Banda were elevated to national leaders, but that did not happen,” Adams said.

“Later on, they told us that the organising team from Harare would visit us to restructure the province, but when we went to the venue of the meeting, we found the likes of Silas Chigora and Witness Dube, who were not part of the 2014 structures who told us that the meeting had been cancelled. Two days later, we heard that they held their meeting at Thamani Moyo’s home.

“I cannot be used and dumped just like that. I will not even be part of their congress. I am in ward 9. They do not have structures.”

Musonda accused Mwonzora of violating the party’s constitution.

“Mwonzora has never met me and why does he want me to be his candidate? We have realised that he (Mwonzora) has installed his own provincial executive which was not even part of the 2014 structures,” Musonda said, adding that he would work with Khupe.

Musonda also claimed that Mwonzora did not have structures in Bulawayo.

Nyathi also raised similar allegations against Mwonzora.

Mudzingwa yesterday said he could not respond as he was in a meeting, but MDC-T spokesperson Witness Dube confirmed seeing the letters from the disgruntled party members. He said the party listed them as potential candidates after considering their previous applications to contest.

“They are not yet candidates and I do not understand why it should be an issue. Maybe they noticed that they would not succeed. They had applied through the province which they now claim not to recognise,” Dube said, adding that his party was still vetting candidates.-newsday

ZEC Drops Election Bombshell

By A Correspondent- Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) yesterday revealed that new voter registrants, who were given voter registration slips after registering to vote this year would not be automatically added onto the voters’ roll.

This adds to the confusion and feeds into critics’ claims that Zec was on a mission to deny first-time voters an opportunity to vote by manipulating the voter registration exercise.

Zec has been under pressure to clear the air on the ongoing voter registration conundrum after it recently issued two different figures for first-time registrants captured on its database

Zec first disclosed that it only registered 2 000 first-time voters last year, but later revised the figure to 2 971. But opposition parties and civic groups said the numbers were understated to disenfranchise potential first-time voters.

A civic organisation named Project Vote 263 recently claimed that it had facilitated registration of 9 635 first-time voters throughout the country, but was shocked by Zec’s  low figures of first-time voters.

The electoral management body later apologised for providing  few registration centres.

But Zec chairperson Priscilla Chigumba yesterday dropped another bombshell when she told journalists in Victoria Falls that being given a registration slip — proof showing that one has registered — did not necessarily mean one would be automatically added to the voters’ roll and eligible to vote.

“Registering to vote does not mean as soon as you are handed a voter registration slip to show you have registered to vote that does not mean automatically your name has been added onto the voters’ roll,” Chigumba said.

“There is another process which happens after you register to vote which is a process whereby the documents that you have submitted to be registered to vote are verified by our system.

“We have two systems of verification. Firstly, we verify your national identity if it is genuine. The next thing is we verify your fingerprints which we run through a system called automated fingerprint verification system.”

Chigumba said Zec would hold a voter registration blitz in April for purposes of ‘sanitising the voters’ roll which would then be used in the delimitation process.

“The reason we have a voter blitz in two phases, one in February and one in April is that after April we then clear the voters’ roll for purposes of delimitation because we anticipate that the delimitation process will be started after August of 2022 which is when the final census report will be tabled before Parliament.

“We do voter registration and start cleaning the data in order to determine who should be on the voters’ roll and who does not have authentic documents,” she said.

“April voter registration blitz is the final blitz which we will use to have registered voters who will inform the delimitation process.”-newsday

Commuters Irked By ZUPCO Early Knock Off Time

By A Correspondent- Commuters in Bulawayo have raised concern over the early knock-off time of Zupco buses and kombis which leave them at the mercy of private commuters who charge double in the evening.

Over the past two weeks, commuters have been struggling to get transport back home as Zupco kombis started disappearing before 8PM.

Bulawayo residents Association chairperson, Mr Ambrose Sibindi said residents’ lives were in danger as transport challenges were making them vulnerable to robberies and being murdered.

“We are very concerned about this issue because people’s lives are in danger at night. Some people from suburbs such as Mzilikazi resort to walking which is even more dangerous,” he said.

“National curfew time is at 9pm, many people knock-off at work places around 6pm latest. There is need to rush into supermarkets and the moment they get to bus stops there is no transport. And it’s more disturbing because it will be way before curfew time.”

Mr Sibindi also said Zupco kombis are becoming less common on the streets.

“If there is a problem, they should let clients know. We are seeing less of these kombis these days, even in the morning people end up taking private vehicles after waiting for too long at bus stops,” he said.

A stranded commuter who claimed to be a vendor in the city centre and only identified herself as MaNdlovu from Pumula South suburb said most times pirate commuter omnibuses prefer short distance routes and they were forced to pay US$1 which is twice what they pay in Zupco kombis.

“If you stay in long distance areas such as us, we stay in Pumula South and if we haven’t gone home by 7.30PM, we don’t bother going to look for Zupco kombis because even those registered to go our direction divert and go to nearby locations. We just sacrifice and pay private kombis at 6th Avenue.

“Sometimes police will be doing patrols and kombis will be running away at full speed and if you are inside, all you have to do is pray that nothing happens because there will be no other choice,” she said.

Contacted for a comment on the issue, Zupco Division Operations Manager Mr Tineyi Rwasoka said they would look into the issue.

“Zupco vehicles knock off when we are sure that there are no commuters waiting to be ferried to their homes but we do take note of the curfew time,” he said

“We are not aware that commuters are facing the challenge, we will look into the issue as soon as we can.”

Ritual Killings Haunt Zim Communities

By A Correspondent- Tears run down Michael Benza’s face as he recalls the recent deaths of his son Dylan and nephew’s daughter, Melissa. They were both seven.

“I was away from home, and when I came back, there was mayhem,” he says. The children didn’t make it home from school that day, and many people from the village were searching for them.

They searched all night. The next day, the children’s bodies were found in an abandoned house in the village, along the road children in the area use everyday to walk to school.

Their throats had been cut, and blood drained, says national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi — a sign the killings may have been for ritual purposes.

“It hurts,” Benza says, “that someone decided to kill my child like an animal.”

The April 2021 killings, have upended this community of small-scale farmers in eastern Zimbabwe, near the border with Mozambique.

And they have sparked a larger national conversation about child safety and the ways traditional beliefs can mislead desperate people.

Some witch doctors and traditional healers in Zimbabwe have long promoted the idea that the blood of young children is pure and can bring blessings and good luck, and that body parts may be used in rituals intended to create wealth.

The Benza killings came at a time when the nation was still trying to come to terms with the gruesome murder of seven-year-old Tapiwa Makore in Murehwa, Mashonaland East province in September 2020. His uncle and two other suspects have been arrested over the suspected ritual murder.

“Many people are being hoodwinked by callous traditional healers into believing that the gruesome killing of innocent children, especially their relatives, can bring them good fortune,” says Heaven Munyuki, founder and executive chairman of Mwanachipo Africa Trust, a non-governmental organisation in Zimbabwe that advocates for children’s rights.

The Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers Association says it doesn’t condone such practices. “We don’t encourage the use of body parts,” says Prince Mutandi Sibanda, the group’s secretary for education and research.

“We have a legal obligation not to do so, and if any of our members uses body parts for any processes, they will lose their membership and be prosecuted for that.”

Such beliefs are not widespread in Zimbabwe.

But the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on people’s livelihoods, coupled with the worsening national economy, may have prompted some individuals to do the unthinkable in the hope of improving their financial circumstances, police and child advocacy groups
say.

Over the past two years, police have recorded five cases across the country in which children were allegedly slain for suspected ritual purposes, Nyathi says.

It’s not the first time that children have been killed in such a manner. But the recent spate of killings has sparked intense interest and discussions on social media, with many people denouncing the beliefs.

“Traditional healers should be sensitised on the right to life that children also have and safeguard their lives,” says John Mhlanga, programmes manager at Justice for Children, a non-governmental organisation that provides legal assistance to children and advocates for their rights.

“Many people are being hoodwinked by callous traditional healers into believing that the gruesome killing of innocent children, especially their relatives, can bring them good fortune.”

Mhlanga says that social media and text messaging platforms have led to heightened concern among the public about the killings and the issues surrounding them.

“With technology development such as WhatsApp, information is now flowing and moving very fast,” Mhlanga said.

“People are now starting to appreciate the rights of children and the right to life, so we now have a lot of publicity around these issues.”

Following the slayings in April, Munyuki says his organisation launched a national campaign to end the ritual killing of children and is encouraging children to walk in groups and avoid secluded places.

Nyathi says police also have launched a national campaign that involves messaging on social media and partnering with organisations that fight for children’s rights.

In Nyanga, residents are still struggling to make sense of the killings. Charles Manyama, a village head, says what happened was unheard of and something he has never witnessed before.

“We were shocked,” he said. “To even talk about it today is traumatising.”

In April, police arrested two men who live in the village and charged them with the murder.

They are being held in jail pending trial, Nyathi says. It was not possible to speak to the men directly, but Barbara Munyawarara, the wife of one of them, says police wrongfully accused her husband and that he was home with her on the night of the killings.

For the parents of the slain children, the lack of closure is agonising. Benza’s nephew, Douglas says Melissa’s death has left a deep wound in his heart, and his life has not been the same since.

According to tradition, when people die their clothes and belongings pass on to relatives to wear and use in their memory. Benza gave his daughter’s clothes to his nieces.

“I sometimes cry just by looking at the kids wearing her clothes,” he says, “and always wish if she was around, she would be playing like other kids.”

July Moyo Faces The Chop?

By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa is considering sacking local government minister July Moyo after receiving security and official briefings indicating he harbours presidential ambitions and was a key schemer in many of the woes the ruling party suffered during its chaotic recent provincial elections.

This comes as the party has called its second politburo meeting in as many weeks this Saturday.

Numerous sources, Thursday said that the axe has been hanging over Moyo’s head for some time and recent dramatic scenes from his Midlands home heightened tensions between the Mnangagwa and the local government minister.

Moyo, who is angling to be the province’s godfather, is reportedly behind former state security minister Owen Mudha Ncube’s weekend shenanigans which led to his dismissal fro cabinet.

Apart from his excursions in the province, Moyo is reported to have played a pivotal role in controversies that rocked other provinces during the recent elections, particularly in Mashonaland Central and Manicaland.

Sources said Mudha, at Moyo’s behest, deployed dozens of Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) operatives to help certain candidates win despite having been unpopular with voters.

Sources further said following Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meetings held across the country on Saturday, Mnangagwa summoned some nine ministers and senior politburo members seconded to supervise proceedings in the provinces to two meetings on Monday, where Moyo’s name feature prominently “in very bad light”.

The Zanu-PF leader also met with some losing candidates he has a soft spot for and told them to calm down since he has plans for them in the not-so-distant future, according to government sources.

“They met him (Mnangagwa) in two batches. He met the first group which included five ministers at the party’s national headquarters in the morning. That meeting took about three hours and Mudha’s fate was sealed from it,” a highly placed source said.

“The second meeting, which included four minister, politburo members and some party officials from provinces, took place at State House. It started at around 11am and ended just after 2pm on Monday.

“Again, July Moyo’s name featured prominently in much of the disgruntlements regarding the provincial elections. The president, at the end of the meeting, said he knew everything that was going on and was waiting for the right time to take action. It was in that meeting that he broke the news that he had decided to fire Mudha,” the source said.

“So, from the look of things, it appears July Moyo’s days are numbered. Remember he is where he is courtesy of the president’s benevolence. The president handpicked him after he had lost the election for the Redcliff (National Assembly) seat, and he really has no roots of his own except in the presidency,” the source added.

“Someone reported in those meetings that during ahead of the provincial elections, Moyo was frequently being referred to as Prime Minister in their conferences,” the source said.

Another source said Moyo is not in good books on personal terms with the first family, particularly First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa.

He is also reported to have resorted to occultic practices to aide his presidential ambitions and, according to sources, believes he is hereditarily the right person to succeed Mnangagwa since he is of the Rozvi Dynasty, a powerful ancient monarch which ruled Zimbabwe between 1684-1850 before, as history says, being decimated by the emerging Ndebele State.

At one point, another source said, Moyo gathered some chiefs and spirit mediums at a traditional beer ceremony which was interpreted in the security sector as an attempt to get primeval coronation and since then, plans have been afoot to remove the traditional leaders portfolio from his ministry.

This is in addition to reports last year peddled by former cabinet minister Jonathan Moyo indicating his namesake he was using witchcraft in his efforts to topple the Zanu-PF leader.

“JULY MOYO IN A FIX WITH ED: In 2020 he saw a N’anga on how to succeed ED; was advised to buy shoes; he got them in TURKEY; N’anga put juju on shoes and asked July to give ED as B/Day gift. Plot leaked to ED’s N’anga. July delivered shoes in Kwekwe & all OCCULTIC HELL BROKE LOOSE,” he tweeted at the time.

“AS JULY delivered his birthday gift package to Mnangagwa at his Kwekwe farm, Auxillia intercepted it to see what was in it; when she saw a fancy pair of shoes, she screamed, ‘shangu dziya, shangu dziya’; Mnangagwa then asked July to leave immediately with the shoes, “buda, buda!,” Prof Moyo said.

Outspoken independent MP for Norton, Temba Mliswa, has also previously accused Mudha and July Moyo of plotting to destroy Mnangagwa’s political life. He also accused July Moyo of holding a meeting with traditional chiefs from the Midlands to plot his ambitions to be the country’s next president.

“He (July Moyo) loses a parliamentary election and is on the job at the mercy of the President. Why would you even think that I would even want to talk about July Moyo when I win elections, where I beat his party and he fails to win elections,” Mliswa said last year.

“July Moyo is well-known for being ambitious. The president knows he convened a meeting with Varozvi (traditional) chiefs so that he could be in power. It is well-known that July Moyo has failed dismally to run the Local Government ministry to the point that people regret where (Ignatius) Chombo went. July Moyo who we all know acts like a de-facto Prime Minister,” Mliswa said.

“Civil Space Deteriorating”: Rights Groups

By A Correspondent- Government has failed to implement recommendations of the second cycle of the Universal Periodic Report, amid deteriorating human rights as well as closure of civic space in the country, rights groups have said.

In a report compiled by 68 civic groups coordinated by the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, National Association of Non-governmental Organisations and the Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe, the lobby groups noted with concern government’s penchant for disregarding the rule of law.

The report, titled Zimbabwe 3rd Cycle United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR), Civil Society Organisations, Stakeholders’ Report 14 July 2021, was submitted to the United Nations Human Rights Council ahead of the council’s assessment of Zimbabwe’s human rights situation on January 26.

The UPR is the periodic review of the human rights records of the 193 UN Member States by the UPR Working Group in Geneva. Every country is assessed once every five years. Zimbabwe was last assessed in 2016.

The working group reviews reports from governments while civic organisations produce parallel reports which ordinarily comment on the government report.

An oversight report by the civic society organisations says Zimbabwe failed to implement most of the recommendations made during the second cycle of the UPR.

“The government of Zimbabwe continues to struggle with exercising governmental power within the bounds of rule of law,” part of the report read.

“It uses arbitrary arrests and prosecution as a weapon to silence or intimidate human rights defenders. In 2020 alone, the arbitrary arrest and lengthy pre-trial detention of persons who openly opposed oppressive methods of governance such as Hopewell Chin’ono, Jacob Ngarivhume, Godfrey Kurauone, Job Sikhala, Fadzayi Mahere, and students including Takudzwa Ngadziore, Tawanda Mucheyiwa and Allan Moyo highlight the continued groundless prosecution.”

The report also noted: “The fact that prosecution of these otherwise simple charges remains pending shows that their arrest and prosecution have been used as a weapon to silence and harass dissenting voices with no intention to genuinely prosecute.”

On Judiciary independence, the lobby groups said since 2016, the independence of the Judiciary and fair trial rights in politically-motivated cases had deteriorated with opposition party-affiliated suspects, independent journalists arbitrarily subjected to protracted pre-trial detention.

“Following the January 2019 protests dragnet arrests, suspects appeared before magistrates in split sessions despite being charged for the same offences, were arbitrarily denied bail, and subjected to summary trials.”

The civic groups also noted the extension of pre-trial detention periods by reserving judgments in bail applications and delaying the production of court records for appeals despite the legal position that bail hearings are urgent matters.

They said retrogression had been witnessed in judicial independence through constitutional amendments that placed the appointment of judges under the Executive arm of government.

The civic groups said there was need to affirm the independence of the Judiciary to allow judges to apply the law without favour and guarantee equal protection of the law for all and desist from further amending the Constitution.

“Since 2017, the government has pushed through Parliament two Bills introducing several amendments to the Constitution. The amendments have a devastating impact on the separation of powers, increasing Executive control over appointments within the Judiciary and of the Prosecutor-General.

The amendments also undermine the oversight role of Parliament over actions of the Executive.”

Civil society organisations also expressed concern over the Private Voluntary Organisation (PVO) Bill, which they said was a threat to the democratic space in the country.

“Civic space continues to shrink at an alarming rate. Proposed new laws such as amendments to the PVO Act and Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act (Criminal Code), and the Patriotic Bill, will undermine the work of human rights defenders and NGOs [non-governmental organisations], especially those working on governance issues,” the report added.

They also noted that government had politicised documentation of citizens by centralising registration centres.

Politicised food distribution and criminalisation of communication by private citizens with foreign governments were also cited as violations of human rights by the government.

Mwonzora “Pleased” With Meeting Makomborero And Mafume

Douglas Mwonzora

By A Correspondent- MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora said Thursday that he was “pleased” after a chance encounter with two leading members of the rival Nelson Chamisa-led MDC Alliance.

Mwonzora had a brief meeting with suspended Harare mayor Jacob Mafume and Makomborero Haruzivishe, the latter recently bailed by the High Court after nearly 9 months in remand prison over kidnapping and violence charges.

I was particularly happy to see Mako in good health. We can’t thank Professor (Lovemore) Madhuku enough for the great work he did.

Professor Madhuku was Haruzivishe’s attorney for the High Court bail appeal.

Obert Mpofu Deploys Thugs At Nyamandlovu Farm

By A Correspondent- Zanu PF secretary for administration Obert Mpofu has deployed armed men to evict a prominent human rights activist and his partners from a coveted farm in Nyamandlovu, thumbing his nose at a court order which said the occupation was illegal.

Butternuts and onions due for harvest “are rotting” at the farm after Mpofu’s thugs drove out farm workers, said scientist Zephaniah Dhlamini who owns the farm jointly with miner Charles Moyo and Siphosami Malunga, the executive director of the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA).

The trio’s employees had their property dumped at the gate of the 554-hectare farm in driving rain on Tuesday.

Malunga believes he has been targeted by Mpofu over his criticism of Zimbabwe’s government and his human rights work with OSISA, which funds pro-democracy groups in the country.

A ZimLive crew was stopped from entering the farm, 67km northwest of Bulawayo, by two armed men on Thursday.

“Mpofu just left and he gave firm instructions that no-one goes in,” a man brandishing a rifle said.

The two men, each armed with a rifle, scrambled for cover behind a wall when our photographer pulled out his camera.

Dhlamini, a scientist with the University of Science and Technology, said: “We have secured an eviction order against Mpofu and he appealed. We have applied for his ejectment pending his appeal and the matter is pending.

“His actions now to chase away our workers and prevent us, the legitimate owners, from entering the farm are completely without legal basis and unlawful.”

Dhlamini said they had 100 tonnes of onions in a warehouse at the farm, a herd of over 100 cattle, goats and chickens which were now at the mercy of the former mines minister.

“We have about 50 tonnes of onions and 20 tonnes of butternut that we can’t harvest. They’re rotting,” Dhlamini told ZimLive.

Mpofu, who controls vast tracts of land in Matabeleland North, says he has an offer letter for 145 hectares of Esidakeni in the name of his other property, Mswelangubo Farm.

In December, the Bulawayo High Court granted an application by Malunga and his partners for the eviction of Mpofu pending a decision of the same court on the main application in which they are challenging a government decision to list the farm for compulsory acquisition.

The High Court directed that Mpofu, his wife Sikhanyisiwe “and all those claiming occupation through them must vacate the farm within 24 hours failing which the Deputy Sheriff of the High Court with the assistance of the police must evict them.”

Mpofu appealed, in effect suspending that ruling. Malunga and his partners then went back to the High Court to seek his eviction pending the outcome of his appeal. That application is yet to be set down for hearing.

Esidakeni’s owners, who bought the farm in 2017, already won several court orders against a National University Science and Technology lecturer, Dumisani Madzivanyati, who was the first to occupy a section of the farm. The High Court ordered his eviction.

Lawyers for Esidakeni farm’s owners say the constitution prevents the government from taking over black-owned farms under laws crafted to reform land ownership, previously dominated by a few thousand white farmers.

Watchers of the farm wrangle say the court’s decision will send a statement on the respect of property rights, or lack of, under the government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

A 2012 report by Partnership Africa Canada, a group of investigative journalists, said Mpofu controlled farm holdings of at least 65,000 hectares, placing him “in the top five landowners in Zimbabwe.”

The properties include a 10,000-hectare farm leased to him for a pittance by the Cold Storage Commission (CSC).-ZimLive

Two Harare Fraudsters Nabbed

By A Correspondent- A-Harare duo has been arraigned before the courts for allegedly defrauding an unsuspecting victim of US$8000 after they lied claiming that they can facilitate importation of a vehicle for him from the United Kingdom.

Gerald Mushongwe (26) and Olivia Mpehla (40) today appeared before Harare magistrate Yeukai Dzuda to answer to the fraud allegations. They were remanded out of custody to February 10 this year for trial date.

Allegations were that they defrauded Kudakwashe Nyakatsa of US$8000 after misrepresenting themselves as vehicle dealers.

It is alleged that on September 27 in 2021, Mushongwe advertised on Facebook to the effect that he was the marketing person for Pound Motors, adding that the company had the capacity to purchase vehicles from the UK.

Nyakatsa then approached Mushongwe who was with Mpehla, asking them to facilitate importation of a truck, which they had advertised on Facebook.

He then paid US$8000 to Mpehla, who then told the complainant that she was going to transfer the money to Calvin Misi, who she claimed was a workmate who operates from the UK.

The court heard that the duo convinced the complainant that the truck was to be delivered in six weeks’ time.

However the six weeks passed without any delivery being made.  Nyakatsa called the accused persons several times, but they gave endless excuses on the delivery date.

The complainant then made a police report at Zimbabwe Republic Police Borrowdale, leading to the arrest of the duo.

Arrested Teachers Spend Another Night In Detention

By A Correspondent| Sixteen leaders and members of Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) yesterday spend their second night in detention following their arrest on Wednesday 12 January 2022 during an anti-government protest held in Harare.

The ARTUZ leaders and members who include Obert Masaraure, who heads the teachers union and are detained at Harare Central Police Station, were on Thursday 13 January 2022 charged with participating in a gathering with intention to promote public violence, bigotry and
breaches of peace as defined in Section 37(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

The unionists were arrested outside the offices of the National Social Security Authority, the state-run pension fund, where ZRP officers claim that they were staging an anti-government protest demanding to be paid their salaries at the figures, which obtained before October 2018, when they were paid US$540 per month.

The ARTUZ leaders and members, who are represented by Idirashe Chikomba, Trust Maanda and Tinashe Chinopfukutwa of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, are expected to appear in court on Friday 14 January 2022.

ZEC Closes Voter Registration For March By-Elections

By-The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) said only those that registered to vote on or before January 8 would be allowed to cast their votes in the March 26 by-elections.

In a media briefing following the electoral body’s 2022 strategic workshop in Victoria Falls yesterday, Zec chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba revealed that the commission has already crafted a comprehensive strategy to guide the handling of elections.

She said nomination courts for the by-elections will sit on January 26 for the 28 National Assembly and 122 council seats.

“The proclamation of National Assembly vacancies fixed the respective Provincial Magistrate Courts as the nomination court venues, while the commission fixed the nomination court venues for the ward vacancies at the respective council boardrooms.

Aspiring candidates can now collect their nomination forms at the commission offices in their provinces and districts,” said Justice Chigumba.

“The nomination forms are also available on the commission website on www.zec.org. Potential candidates are encouraged to pre-lodge their nomination papers to decongest the nomination courts. This can be done in the respective Zec provinces and districts. After the sitting of the nomination courts on January 26 2022, the commission will establish multi-party liaison committees to resolve electoral disputes and publish the nomination court results in the press.”

She said while voter registration has been closed for the March 26 polls, the exercise remains open for future elections.

Justice Chigumba said the polls will follow Covid-19 prevention measures.

Zec suspended holding of by-elections in 2020 following outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The pending elections will be conducted in line with Zec Covid-19 policy, which encourages adherence to internationally agreed Covid-19 protocols. Among other steps, the commission will ensure sanitisation, masking up, observing social distancing and Zec will also administer temperature checks at entry points,” Justice Chigumba said.

She said the commission will intensify voter education ahead of the by-elections and mobile voter registration.

“A comprehensive roadmap is already in place and will be shared with stakeholders in due course which provides a trajectory that the electoral processes will follow. The mobile voter registration exercise will be conducted in two phases. First phase (starting from) February 1 to February 28, 2022. Second phase (from) April 11-30, 2022.

“The public should note that deployments will be done per constituency with voter education preceding the programme to encourage prospective registrants to participate. The public is encouraged to keep track of the voter registration itineraries to be advertised in the mainstream media as well as online.

“Civil Society Organisations conducting voter education and political parties must encourage the public to visit the mobile registration centres nearer them as per advertised itineraries. The commission will make sure that the information regarding the roll out will be timeously churned out to the public to avoid inconveniences.”

Justice Chigumba called on the media to report objectively in the coming elections and shun divisive language.

“I would like to urge the media as a key stakeholder, to disseminate accurate and balanced information to allow citizens to make informed choices. Let’s shun hate speech, misinformation and falsehoods, and uphold journalistic principles based on truth, honesty, accuracy, balance and objectivity,” said Justice Chigumba.

Owen Ncube Ouster, Zanu PF Holds Weekend Urgent Meeting

By- In an unusual development that signals the deepening of factionalism in Zanu PF, the party will be holding a Politburo meeting in Harare tomorrow, Saturday.

The politburo meeting comes after the firing, Monday of State Security Minister Owen Ncube, by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

In a statement last night, Zanu PF national spokesman Christopher Mutsvangwa said: “The Secretary for Administration Dr O.M. Mpofu wishes to advise all members that there shall be an ordinary session of the Politburo to be held on Saturday, 15 January 2022 at the home of the people’s revolution, Zanu PF headquarters commencing 1000hours.

Chegutu Prophet Drugs, Rapes Client

By- A self-styled Chegutu based allegedly drugged his 32-year-old female client before raping her.

The sad development happened in 2017 in Chegutu.

Police said the unnamed spiritualist put an intoxicating substance into a raspberry drink and made the woman drink it before raping her. Police said in a statement:
The ZRP urges members of the public to promptly report all cases of abuse to the Police. On 12/01/22, Police in Harare recorded a case of rape in which a woman (32) was raped by a self proclaimed prophet, on two separate occasions, in 2017 and May 2019 in Chegutu and Harare.
In the [first] incident the suspect put an intoxicating substance into a raspberry drink, made the victim to consume it and raped her.

In the [second] incident, the suspect took advantage of the absence of the victim’s husband and raped her once.
The victim disclosed the matter in December 2021. Investigations are in progress.

Obert Mpofu Ignores Court Order, Evicts Malunga Farm Workers

By-Zanu PF Secretary for Administration, Obert Mpofu, reportedly ignored a court order barring him from invading human rights lawyer Siphosami Malunga’s Esidakeni Farm Nyamadlovu, Matabeleland North Province.

Reports say Mpofu has started evicting the Malunga’s workers.

The farm is owned by Malunga and his business partners Zephaniah Dhlamini and Charles Moyo.

Mpofu has reportedly hired armed personnel to keep both the workers and the owners of the farm out.

Malunga, Dhlamini and Moyo bought Esidakeni in 2017 from white farmers through Kershelmar Farms (Private) Limited.

The trio has, however, been struggling to retain ownership as the State compulsorily acquired the farm in 2020 via a Notice of Acquisition General Notice 3042 that appeared in a government gazette.

Zimbabwe’s laws empower the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement to compulsorily acquire land without paying compensation except for improvements.

Mpofu and his wife, through their company, Mswelangubo Farm, were offered 145 hectares of Esidakeni Farm. The farm measures 553 hectares in total.

In December last year, High Court judge Justice Evangelista Kabasa gave Mpofu a 24-hour ultimatum to vacate the farm. Mpofu immediately filed a notice to appeal the ruling.

Malunga and partners argue Mpofu’s occupation of Esidakeni Farm is illegal considering he owns multiple farms.

Speaking during an interview with CITE, Dhlamini revealed that Mpofu had started evicting their workers using the armed guards to keep them out. Said: Dhlamini:

The eviction started on Tuesday. When they moved into the farm, we did a court order and applied to the High Court for them to go.

They applied to the Supreme Court and must have listened to the High Court order but they remained put there.

The procedure is the judgment must be executed pending an appeal, which they must launch from outside the farm.

They hired armed people with guns who are manning the place and are stopping people from moving in.

Even us owners are not allowed to go inside. We understand the armed people are from one security company.

Dhlamini added that their crops which had planted were dying as they are not being tended to. He said:

We have three compounds where our workers stay and they went to one of them and evicted our people.

There is no recourse, as we did try to go to the police, asking them to go put law and order there at the farm but the police said without a court order they cannot do anything.

Social media is awash with images of Java wearing a female police hat.

Police have arrested several citizens for wearing military gear, including ZRP regalia.

On Thursday, ZRP reluctantly responded to tweets by the public asking them to arrest Java for putting on a police uniform.

Ferocious Floods Hit Zimbabwe

The persistent rains falling countrywide have seen the usual seasonal flooding in some areas and blocked drains in urban areas. The rainy season started late, but since New Year rain has been falling persistently in many areas with the Meteorological Services Department forecasting more, and warning of localised rains in excess of 30mm along the main watershed and the Eastern Highlands, with lightning, strong winds and hailstorms expected in some areas. The Department of Civil Protection (DCP) in Harare has developed a national contingency plan as part of its preparedness to help people in communities in cases of flooding and natural disasters across the country.

The plan approved by Cabinet in November last year is the blueprint that the Government and partners are using to respond to both meteorological and human-induced disasters. The DCP in Mashonaland Central has said it is on high alert following an incident of flooding in Muzarabani last week where a village head from Soda Village was marooned. Provincial development coordinator Mr Timothy Maregere said Mr Soda was evacuated and airlifted to Harare. All civil protection units across the province have been restocked and are ready to deal with any incidents.

The province has also seen a number of structures damaged by hailstorms and wind since the beginning of the rainy season. In Mashonaland Central, low-lying areas such as Muzarabani and Mbire are prone to floods, and see these almost every season. Attempts over the years to get people to at least have their houses on higher ground have been resisted with many willing to take risks to be nearer to their fields.

In the Midlands, heavy rains that have been recorded in Gweru since Monday resulted in most suburbs around the city being affected by flash floods. Blocked storm water drains, a major problem in almost all urban areas as people continue to drop litter in the streets, is seen as the major cause of the flooding. Yesterday morning several buildings including OK supermarket in Gweru CBD had their goods and other properties drenched in water while some residents in western suburbs that included Mkoba 1, 5, 9, 11 and Woodlands had to temporarily abandon their properties as flowing water found its way into houses. Midlands Provincial Development Coordinator, Mr Abiot Maronge yesterday toured the affected areas to assess the situation. Mr Maronge said while the CPU was working on measures to provide the affected families with food and temporary shelter, the local authority should work on addressing some drainage systems and clear water runways to avoid flooding. “It is the duty of the local authority to always make sure that they clear drains and avoid such floods some of which are due to human error,” he said In Beitbridge Malusungane, Tshamnangana and Kwalu primary schools had their classroom blocks and staff houses damaged by heavy storms in Ward 11 last week.

Beitbridge chairperson for the Department of Civil Protection, Mrs Sikhangazile Mafu-Moyo who is also the District Development Coordinator, said 46 homesteads were also affected by heavy rains She said 42 houses in Ward 11, two in Ward 12, and one in Ward 8 under Beitbridge West Constituency were destroyed. “The Ward Civil Protection Committees are busy assessing the damage and the needs on the ground,” said Mrs Mafu-Moyo. “However, we have delivered tents and groceries to a family of eight in Siyoka area, Ward 12, where a hut was struck by a bolt of lightning. We will mobilise resources for other families based on the assessment report from the ward committees”. She said so far no human life had been lost and that assessments were continuing in other parts of the district. The officials said they had also sent early warning messages to communities living in low-lying areas and near streams, rivers and water bodies. In Matabeleland North, heavy rains that have been falling in Victoria Falls have exposed the municipality’s poor drainage system after flash floods swept through houses and damaged roads in Mkhosana suburb. While no fatalities or serious destruction of infrastructure have been reported, residents lost groceries and other property that got submerged in water which in some cases was at knee level.

Some were stuck indoors as they could not go out of their houses, which were surrounded by water. There are few storm drains in Mkhosana and water flows on the surface whenever it rains. Poor drainage is a major concern which residents even raised during budget consultation meetings. Department of Civil Protection director Mr Nathan Nkomo said the national contingency plan was developed following the regional weather forecast which predicted normal to above normal rainfall. “The month of October 2021 saw the onset of the rainfall season which has been characterised by heavy rains and flash floods in various parts of the country,” he said. “Urban areas have not been spared given the damages witnessed in all major cities. Social amenities infrastructure damaged as a result of the heavy rains includes schools and clinics have also been destroyed by the rains.

“Civil Protection Committees have been given the task of conducting damage assessments in order to ascertain immediate needs of affected households as well as costing of damages to social infrastructure to facilitate mobilisation of resources to undertake repairs.” Mr Nkomo said submissions from provinces where damages have been reported would be received as rapid damage assessments were being conducted. Zim Army Starts Own Phone Network | ARE YOU BUYING THEIR SERVICE?

Zimbabwe Military army: file copy

The Zimbabwe National Army has started its own ground phone network.

While the state media said this is a partnership with government owned paratatal, TelOne, the development signals a total militarisation of the state entity.

According to academic, Enock Ndawana, “the prioritisation of military solutions to every security problem works to safeguard the governing elite but worsens instead of addressing the citizens’ problems with far-reaching implications for human and state security: For human security to be realised, Zimbabwe needs to discontinue militarised governance and capacitate responsible government ministries and departments.

On full implementation, the land-based network will enable the nation to experience lower network costs, increased accessibility, complete portability, higher scalability, clearer voice quality, multi-tasking and flexibility with softphones.

The partnership will implement a dedicated internet system, IP/PBX with gateways, advanced IP handsets, ordinary handsets, digital switchboards and Wi-Fi access points to provide ubiquitous internet service to all the official sites.

The network modernisation is targeted to modify 58 network sites countrywide before year end. Speaking during the commissioning of six complete network sites at the Zimbabwe Military Academy in Gweru last week, TelOne acting managing director, Mr Joseph Machiva, said the project will enable Government and its departments to fully use the capabilities that come with this installed modern network.

“We are excited that these service offerings, pave way for futuristic services such as video conferencing as previously demonstrated. These add on services are very key as they allow Government and its departments to fully utilise the capabilities that come with this installed modern network,” he said. “Once this modern network is installed all the sites that are being commissioned today and any future sites, can be linked together to allow extension-to-extension calling regardless of location throughout the network.”

ZNA commandant, Colonel Arnold Gumbo, who was representing commander ZNA Lieutenant-General David Sigauke, said communication plays a pivotal role in everyday life and its importance cannot be over-emphasised. “I would like to thank all of you present here today for your positive contributions towards the successful implementation of these completed projects,” he said. Col Gumbo said as the digital world continue to gain recognition, any organisation that ignores digital communication risks failure. “Communication run our lives in these modern times without which an organisation will not function, thus we thrive to keep abreast with emerging technologies to march in step with the ever-changing ICT world.” – state media/additional reporting.

Police Arrest MDC Alliance Official For 2018 ” Crime”

Former MDC MP for Bikita West, Heya Shoko has been arrested for insulting a political opponent by calling his haircut zibhibho.

Shoko was arrested after slighting Charles Musimiki (Zanu PF) by telling him that his haircut was not for adults. He described Musimuki’s haircut as zibhibho (box cut) not to be donned by old people like him, according to information obtained by The Mirror.

Shoko is being charged for breaching the Post and Telecommunications Act after being reported to CID Law and Order in Masvingo by an offended Musimuki.

Shoko allegedly wrote in a WhatsApp group Bikita West 2018 & Beyond; “Iko murume mukuru anogerwa zibhibho here? (Is it proper for an old man to don box cut?)”.

Musimiki was an aspiring MP for MDC in Zaka West but is now Zanu PF, The Mirror was told.

A former teacher at Gwindingwi High School in Bikita, Musimiki is known for his political flip-flopping. He recently defected to Zanu PF for the second time amid pomp and fanfare at the Zanu PF headquarters.

He first crossed the floor to the ruling party in 2001. After his first defection Musimiki later skipped the country into neighbouring South Africa and was part of the group that formed the controversial MDC Veteran Activists Association (MDCVAA) which is not formally recognised by the party itself.

Shoko is denying ever insulting Musimiki but said he only disputed him on WhatsApp that he was one of the founding members of MDC. “I only told him that he was lying that he is one of the founding members of MDC while addressing Zanu PF rallies.

“We co-opted Musimiki into MDC way after it was formed and initiated that he contests in Zaka West representing people living with disabilities. He was never in MDC structures. Ask him if he was an MDC member at any given time.

“I was the provincial organising secretary for Masvingo and I know he was never in the structures. He was Zanu PF through and through, so I am surprised by the hullabaloo about the defection. That guy was never an MDC member. It’s not about the issue of Zibhibho, but he felt exposed,” said Shoko.

“Being a founding member or in MDC structures is neither here nor there, the bottom line is he insulted me on social media. Saying Zibhibho is a personal attack on me. I think the matter will be decided by the courts, so I have nothing more to comment on this issue,” said Musimiki.- Masvingo Mirror
