Police Arrest Chitungwiza Councillor For Convening A Meeting That Went Against July Moyo’s Wish

POLICE in Chitungwiza have arrested suspended Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) councillor Peter Matiringe on allegations of convening an ‘illegal’ meeting to elect a substantive mayor.

The arrest was confirmed by former mayor Lovemore Maiko, who was also suspended by Local Government minister July Moyo last week.

“Matiringe was arrested on allegations of convening an illegal meeting to elect the mayor. He is at St Mary’s Police Station right now. Rumour says the police want to arrest the six of us but they have not informed us yet,” Maiko said.

“That meeting was not illegal in any way. Everything was done according to standing orders, the Urban Councils Act and Constitution. How can they arrest a few people out of the 16 who attended the meeting? This is just weaponisation of State apparatuses.

“It’s purely politics because they are trying to safeguard acting mayor Kiven Mutimbanyoka. It is a clear act of victimisation.”

Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi could not be reached to shed light on the issue.

Last week, Moyo suspended former deputy mayor and ward 19 councillor Musa Makweza, Richard Chamutsa (ward 5), Matiringe (ward 10), Kuda John (ward 21) and ward 14 councillor Chengetai Nyagondo on allegations of illegally convening a meeting which reinstated Maiko as mayor.

Two Hospitals Shut Down As PSMI Fails To Pay Staff

HARARE – The Premier Service Medical Investments (PSMI) has closed down West End Hospital in Harare and Claybank Hospital in Gweru after failing to pay staff, including nurses and doctors, for three months.

In a notice on Friday, PSMI blamed the crisis on “cash flow ceilings currently affecting the major client, Premier Service Medical Aid Society (PSMAS).”

PSMAS, which was formed by civil servants, runs a medical insurance scheme for government workers. PSMI is PSMAS’ investment arm.

The scheme has been on the verge of collapse for years due to low premium contributions by members, and the government’s refusal to raise its own contribution.

The PSMI board said in a statement that it “acknowledges the fact that employees have gone for three months without salaries, and how the unfortunate circumstances continue to affect the employees’ wellbeing and their capacity to report for work and effectively discharge their duties.”

It said it was working with the government and PSMAS “to address the cash flow challenges given their continued adverse effects on PSMI operations, staff welfare as well as civil servants’ ability to conveniently access quality healthcare services, as was the case before.”

PSMI has been charging members “shortfalls” before they receive treatment. It said these charges kept the medical insurance afloat as the money was used to “fund day-to-day business continuity requirements pending capacitation.”

It added: “Shortfalls had also been adopted in efforts to close the gap between the cost of service delivery and the obtaining medical aid tariffs which are unsustainable under the current hyperinflationary environment.

“However, the issue of shortfalls has since been overtaken by events following a board resolution to remove the shortfalls for all services effective October 1, 2022, except in circumstances where a member would have exhausted their benefits.”

Biti Spills The Beans On Scandalous Airport Road Construction Project

The scandal surrounding the incomplete Harare Airport Road has taken centre stage in the trial of former Finance minister Tendai Biti, who is facing charges of assaulting a businesswoman with the opposition stalwart using the trial to show how his accuser has allegedly captured state institutions in Zimbabwe.

Biti, who is a senior Citizens Coalition for Change leader and Harare East legislator, wants the Harare magistrates’ courts to refer his case to the Constitutional Court as he fears that he will get an unfair trial.  He is accused of verbally assaulting Tatiana Aleshina two years ago.

Aleshina is a business partner to businessman Ken Sharpe who owns Augur Investments that was controversially awarded the Harare Airport Road construction contract on May 30, 2008 without going to tender.

Augur was supposed to construct the Airport Road with an understanding that 90% of the costs would be paid in the form of land and 10% in cash.

Augur went on to subcontract Fairclot, who withdrew all their equipment and stopped work on the road after doing 2.7km of the 10km due to non-payment. The road was supposed to connect the Robert Mugabe International Airport to Harare’s central business district.

Government later cancelled the contract, but Harare City Council had already transferred a total of 273 299 hectares of land in Borrowdale’s Pomona area to Augur.

The original title deeds for the land known as stand number 654 Pomona measuring 273 299 hectares is still held in escrow by Fairclot’s lawyers Coghlan, Welsh and Guest.

Testifying in court last week, Biti said he was a victim of state capture by Aleshina whom he said had unusual influence over state institutions to an extent that she would violate the law without any consequences.

After spirited attempts by prosecutor Michael Reza to block him from making reference to the Harare Airport Road, the politician-cum lawyer went on to detail  how the  businesswoman of Ukrainian origin allegedly used their links with “in high”  offices to grab vast tracts of land.

According to Biti, the expose` was relevant to the assault case to show how the complaint was an alleged “mastermind of malicious prosecution against him” and had abused other institutions in what he said was state capture.

“I will demonstrate your worship how a company called Augur Investments extracted thousands and thousands of hectares of land from the city of Harare and from the government of Zimbabwe by this company that the complaint is at the centre of,” he submitted.

He cited the May 2008 agreement between the city of Harare and Augur Investments for the Airport road project.

“The second agreement relates to an agreement executed in 2007 between Augur Investments and the City of Harare to create a company called Sunshine Development Private Limited, a joint venture company but once again Augur Investments received thousands and thousands of hectares of land with Augur Investments and the complaint putting absolutely nothing into the capital account of Sunshine Development,” Biti said.

“Sunshine Development was used to extract thousands of hectares of land in respect of which Augur Investments did not put a single cent in the capital account as they were obliged to do in terms of the agreement.

“Augur Investments was obliged to put US$30 million into the capital account of Sunshine Development with the city of Harare putting in land.

“The shareholder agreement was very clear that Augur was supposed to put money, and that it was not going to securitise the land transferred to it.

“But in fact, Augur did so and they went to the market to borrow substantial amounts of money from a commercial bank.

“The City of Harare then reported Augur Investments. The complaint then wrote letters to the state saying why ‘are you prosecuting when we have indemnity arising from the deed of settlement’ and the prosecution stopped as a result of those letters.

“Those letters amount to interfering with justice. If someone is so powerful to stop prosecution over a very serious matter, what more influence can she have over a misdemeanour of assault?”

Government cancelled the agreement between Augur Investments and City of Harare for the Airport Road project in May 2014 after construction had stopped, but Augur went on to demand more land, Biti added.

“Despite the fact that they did not perform, the complaint then demanded additional land as a penalty against the City of Harare, which land did not even belong to the city of Harare.

“It belonged to the state and was owned by the president of the Republic of Zimbabwe. Litigation commenced.”

Augur Investments then proceeded to transfer stand 654 Pomona into one of its satellite companies, according to Biti.

“Using her influence, a few days before the matter was heard on appeal at the Supreme Court of Zimbabwe, she went to the highest offices in the land and extracted a deed of settlement in respect of which  not only did she get stand 654 Pomona township but also immunity against prosecution from herself and from her colleagues,” he argued.

“Pursuant to that, notwithstanding the fact that the title deed of stand 654 Pomona was being held in escrow as security for amounts owed to Fairclot, and notwithstanding that the president of Zimbabwe did not sign a power of attorney authorising transfer of stand 654 Pomona, stand 654 Pomona was in fact transferred not to Augur Investments but to a satellite company of Augur Investments, Doorex Private Limited.”

Reza then vehemently protested against Biti’s submissions saying they were offside, and not related to the case on trial.

Reza said the Airport Road contract and payments were done above board. He argued that this was evidenced by the City of Harare’s acceptance to settle debt owed to Augur Investments.

“The airport road highway contract was above board and the payments to Augur were in good faith and due to the work done,” he said.

“This has been confirmed by the City of Harare as evidenced by its acceptance to settle the debt owed to Augur.

“It is a complete fallacy to try and link the airport highway and an assault case which Mr Biti is standing trial for.

“(The) 2008 events, which were above board have no bearing on the assault charge being faced by Biti.”

The trial is set to resume on October 18.

Third Force Threatens National Security

Tinashe Sambiri|CCC Member of the House of Assembly for Kuwadzana, Hon Johnson Matambo, has pointed out that the presence of “the third force” in the country is a threat to national security.

Hon Matambo raised the matter in Parliament on Wednesday.

Said Hon Matambo:
In the continued absence of the Minister of State Security, I will pose my question to the Leader of the House. What is the Government’s policy regarding threats or claims to State Security? On three occasions, Government mentioned the presence of a third force in the country and up to this very day, nothing has been done to apprehend the third force.

I have seen that the victims, when the Government mentioned the presence of the third force, are the ones who have been arrested…”

The MP directed the question on national security to the Leader of the House in the absence of State Security Minister.

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament then advised Hon Matambo to put the question in writing as it was sensitive.

Government is reluctant to act on cases of rising political violence in the country.

Mnangagwa Violates Human Rights Charter

Tinashe Sambiri|CCC Namibia has challenged the Zanu PF leader, Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa, to release jailed party activists with immediate effect.

According to CCC Namibia, the prolonged detention of Hon Job Sikhala, Hon Godfrey Karakadzai Sithole and the Nyatsime activists is a violation of the African Charter on human rights.

Read statement below:

Comply with Article 7(1) of the African Charter on Human and People’s rights! CCC Namibia demands justice for Job Saro Wiwa Sikhala & others.

14 October 2022

Citizens in Namibia comprehend that Zimbabwe is a party to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights hence she must comply with Article 7(1) which affords an accused the fundamental right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law. The continued incarceration of Honourable Job Saro Wiwa Sikhala, Godfrey Sithole, and the Nyatsime 14 is an attempt to deter social democrats from demanding justice, equality, and freedom. This is not only abusing the supreme law of the country but regional, continental and international laws as well.

Demanding justice for Moreblessing Ali does not warrant this arbitrary arrest, subsequent denial of bail, and prolonged pre-trial detention. This is undoubtedly a ploy to intensify the weaponization of the law to punish dissenters. Courts in the motherland are being manipulated and used as fortified tools of state repression ahead of the harmonized elections in 2023. Zanu-PF’s abuse of the criminal law not only punishes the legitimate assertion of freedom of expression but is often done in violation of the basic fair trial rights protected under Zimbabwe, regional, continental, and international law and the fundamental fair administration of justice.

It is quite pathetic that the politically-inept ZANU-PF is leveraging its position to strike fear by exploiting the very laws that were enshrined to protect the individual and society as a whole. Citizens Coalition for Change Namibia is cognizant of the provisions in Section 50(1)(d) of the Zimbabwean Constitution which prescribes that any person who is arrested “must be released unconditionally or on reasonable conditions, pending charge or trial unless compelling reasons are justifying their continued detention”.

Moreover, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights(ICCPR) to which Zimbabwe is a party, reflects the universal nature of this standard. Article 9(3) furnishes “Anyone arrested or detained on a criminal charge shall be brought promptly before the judge to exercise judicial power and shall be entitled to trial within a reasonable time”. Change champions in Namibia are greatly disappointed in the continued lawfare which has seen Job Saro Wiwa Sikhala and others languishing at Chikurubi Maximum Prison from 14 June to date for demanding justice for the deceased change seeker, Moreblessing Ali who was butchered in cold blood by known ZANU-PF thugs.

We reiterate that the right to pre-trial release or bail is essential to upholding the presumption of innocence, a significant tenet of the rule of law and constitutionalism in Zimbabwe. The Nyatsime 16 are being tormented for belonging to the change that delivers. Spending more than three months in the maximum prison for defending the constitution is unacceptable and must be resisted with equal measure. We demand the immediate release of our lawmakers and change champions. It is not a crime to subscribe to the organic leadership of President Advocate Nelson Chamisa.

Citizens Coalition for Change Namibia Rundu Branch champion Simbarashe Ndoda urged all social democrats across the globe to amplify their revolutionary voices demanding justice for Job Saro Wiwa Sikhala, Godfrey Karakadzayi Sithole and the Nyatsime 14. Solidarity is a core value of social democracy, champion Ndoda further elaborated. He emphasized the dire need for unity with the incarcerated change champions. Our members of parliament, councillors, and the entire membership should act for change.

Boy(15) Elopes With Sugar M*ma

A MARRIED Zimunya woman (27) dazzled a 15-year-old boy with her bedroom antics, resulting in him absconding school.

However, this terribly backfired on Ruth Maenzanise who will be a guest of the State for the next 24 months after being convicted of being int!mate with a minor.

She will, however, spend 18 months behind bars after six months of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition that she does not commit a similar offence.

Maenzanise appeared before Mutare magistrate, Ms Perseverance Makala, while Ms Loice Mazvita Kadenha prosecuted.

Ms Kadenha said the two started dating last month in Chitakatira Village.

“The boy visited his friend on September 23 and his friend told him that his landlady had a crush on him.

“The boy told his friend that he was too young to date the woman.

“The following day, the boy visited his friend again and Maenzanise also arrived at the homestead. She opened up about her feelings for the young boy.

“She told him how much she loved and felt about him. The boy could not resist her advances and the two fell in love,” said Ms Kadenha.

On September 25, the two agreed to meet in the evening to consummate their relationship.

The boy’s friend provided the room and the lovebirds were intimate that night.

The boy did not return home and started cohabiting with Maenzanise.

This happened for some days and his concerned mother went to his school to check if he was attending classes.

Since he was not showing up at home, she assumed that he was doing studies with his friend.

The mother found out that her son was no longer coming to school and questioned him about his moves.

However, he did not divulge what was happening.

The boy later explained to the school head what was happening and a police report was made.

Maenzanise was arrested, while the boy was sent for medical examinations.

In court, Maenzanise admitted to sleeping with the teenager.

Mnangagwa Gets Mangorized By Baba Harare, Whole World Watching

By Showbiz Reporter | Did the capital city Harare’s biggest brand, lose his morals to snake down for the ZANU PF coup leader on Saturday? Not at all because Mnangagwa got totally mangorized by the city’s father of music.

Graphic illustrating how Emmerson Mnangaga was duped by Baba Harare

Braveman Chizvino, is on video appearing as if staging for Mnangagwa in what the politician’s spokesman, George Charamba celebrated as a defection. In the below video he is singing, “the reason why the reason why.”

Other Zimbabweans said the man is simply duping Mnangagwa.

This was just as Govt spokesman Nick Mangwana was more poetic, to say CCC members were busy interfacing with Mnangagwa. Said Mangwana:

But the truth is Harare is playing on the politician’s obsession for self praises, said analyst Honde Huva. Soccer legend, Memory Mucherahowa also weighed in to say Mnangagwa has been hit by a singing green mango.
Said the soccer player of the poetic violence depicted by a fruit on its way to ripening by next year 2023.:

England’s Reece James To Miss World Cup ?

Chelsea star Reece James could miss England’s campaign at the World Cup after rupturing knee ligaments on Wednesday.

James sustained ligament damage in the Blues’ 2-0 Champions League win over AC Milan and will spend eight weeks but the defender will not have a surgery.

“Following the knee injury sustained in our away match against AC Milan, Reece has received treatment from the Chelsea medical department and visited a specialist this weekend.

“After consultation between all parties, Reece will now undergo a rehabilitation programme and is expected to be out for eight weeks,” Chelsea said in a statement.

The setback is likely to rule him out of the World Cup which starts next month.

The Blues fullback has been in top form this season and was expected to be a preferred option at right-back for Gareth Southgate at the World Cup.

England are in Group B and will open their campaign against Iran on 21 November before facing USA four days later and Wales on the 29th of the month.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

What You Need To Know About Dementia …

Key facts

Dementia is a syndrome in which there is deterioration in cognitive function beyond what might be expected from the usual consequences of biological ageing.
Although dementia mainly affects older people, it is not an inevitable consequence of ageing.

Currently more than 55 million people live with dementia worldwide, and there are nearly 10 million new cases every year.

Dementia results from a variety of diseases and injuries that primarily or secondarily affect the brain. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia and may contribute to 60-70% of cases.

Dementia is currently the seventh leading cause of death among all diseases and one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people globally.

Dementia has physical, psychological, social and economic impacts, not only for people living with dementia, but also for their carers, families and society at large.
Dementia is a syndrome – usually of a chronic or progressive nature – that leads to deterioration in cognitive function (i.e. the ability to process thought) beyond what might be expected from the usual consequences of biological ageing. It affects memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language, and judgement. Consciousness is not affected. The impairment in cognitive function is commonly accompanied, and occasionally preceded, by changes in mood, emotional control, behaviour, or motivation.

Dementia results from a variety of diseases and injuries that primarily or secondarily affect the brain, such as Alzheimer’s disease or stroke.

Dementia is currently the seventh leading cause of death among all diseases and one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people worldwide. Dementia has physical, psychological, social and economic impacts, not only for people living with dementia, but also for their carers, families and society at large. There is often a lack of awareness and understanding of dementia, resulting in stigmatization and barriers to diagnosis and care.

Signs and symptoms
Dementia affects each person in a different way, depending upon the underlying causes, other health conditions and the person’s cognitive functioning before becoming ill. The signs and symptoms linked to dementia can be understood in three stages.

Early stage: the early stage of dementia is often overlooked because the onset is gradual. Common symptoms may include:

forgetfulness
losing track of the time
becoming lost in familiar places.
Middle stage: as dementia progresses to the middle stage, the signs and symptoms become clearer and may include:

becoming forgetful of recent events and people’s names
becoming confused while at home
having increasing difficulty with communication
needing help with personal care
experiencing behaviour changes, including wandering and repeated questioning
Late stage: the late stage of dementia is one of near total dependence and inactivity. Memory disturbances are serious and the physical signs and symptoms become more obvious and may include:

becoming unaware of the time and place
having difficulty recognizing relatives and friends
having an increasing need for assisted self-care
having difficulty walking
experiencing behaviour changes that may escalate and include aggression.
Common forms of dementia
There are many different forms of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form and may contribute to 60-70% of cases. Other major forms include vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies (abnormal aggregates of protein that develop inside nerve cells), and a group of diseases that contribute to frontotemporal dementia (degeneration of the frontal lobe of the brain). Dementia may also develop after a stroke or in the context of certain infections such as HIV, harmful use of alcohol, repetitive physical injuries to the brain (known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy) or nutritional deficiencies. The boundaries between different forms of dementia are indistinct and mixed forms often co-exist.

Rates of dementia
Worldwide, around 55 million people have dementia, with over 60% living in low- and middle-income countries. As the proportion of older people in the population is increasing in nearly every country, this number is expected to rise to 78 million in 2030 and 139 million in 2050.

Risk factors and prevention

Although age is the strongest known risk factor for dementia, it is not an inevitable consequence of biological ageing. Further, dementia does not exclusively affect older people – young onset dementia (defined as the onset of symptoms before the age of 65 years) accounts for up to 9% of cases. Studies show that people can reduce their risk of cognitive decline and dementia by being physically active, not smoking, avoiding harmful use of alcohol, controlling their weight, eating a healthy diet, and maintaining healthy blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Additional risk factors include depression, social isolation, low educational attainment, cognitive inactivity and air pollution.

Mnangagwa In Trouble For Violating African Charter On Human Rights

Tinashe Sambiri|CCC Namibia has challenged the Zanu PF leader, Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa, to release jailed party activists with immediate effect.

According to CCC Namibia, the prolonged detention of Hon Job Sikhala, Hon Godfrey Karakadzai Sithole and the Nyatsime activists is a violation of the African Charter on human rights.

BREAKING: Sikhala Angry With Mwonzora’s Lies On Chikurubi Visit | FULL TEXT

Statement By Hon Job Sikhala’s spokesperson | Hon. Sikhala and Hon. Sithole want the public to know that on the 14th of October 2022, they were advised that Senator Douglus Mwonzora intended to visit them. This information came through the prison security team. The two declined the request and gave the officials their reasons, which were communicated on that very same day.

On Saturday the 15th of October 2022, the same senior prison security officials came, informing them that Sen. Mwonzora had come to visit them, despite their express statement declining the request. Hon. Sikhala and Hon. Sithole again refused and opted to remain in their cells whilst Sen. Mwonzora waited outside the gate. Some prison officials confirmed today that Sen. Mwonzora did not even make it to the second gate. There are five gates one has to pass through to be able to see inmates. It is very sad and unfortunate that a person as senior and learned as Sen. Mwnonzora would mislead the public into thinking that he met Hon. Sikhala and Hon. Sithole in prison.

His public statement which he issued to members of the press whom he went with to Chikurubi Maximum claiming to have met both Hon. Sikhala and Hon. Sithole is therefore incorrect and should be dismissed with uttermost contempt. Hon. Sikhala and Hon. Sithole are very angry at some senior officials at Chikurubi for wanting to impose a visit on them. The security officials even made a suggestion that Sen. Mwonzora be allowed to come directly to their cells and guarantee privacy, a request that was turned down.

As much as the gesture is appreciated, the Honourable MPs wonder why Sen. Mwonzora invited members of the press to come with him if the visit was genuine. Secondly, why would he even insist on visiting them when they had made it dear that they were not comfortable meeting him? The two are also questioning why officials allowed Sen. Mwonzora permission to visit them yet a similar request was denied for President Nelson Chamisa. The two are now worried and concerned about their welfare and security. – Freddy Masarirevu

Jamwanda: CCC Must Have Structures To Qualify For 2023 Polls

Presidential advisor, George Charamba reveals his Jamwanda weeklie as he says Nelson Chamisa’s CCC party will need to form structures in order to contest for the 2023 elections.

FULL TEXT:

Thursday issue of The Daily News ran a story on Triple C’s plans to unveil formal structures before next year’s harmonised general elections. The story is attributed to one David Coltart, the ex-Rhodesian policeman who turned to studying law in apartheid South Africa, in the dying days of Rhodesia.

Whatever the political consequences on Triple C, Coltart is to be admired for his impolitic sense of candour, including exposing and confirming Chamisa’s vulnerabilities or soft underbelly. All along, the CCC line of the day was that the thing would not have structures, would not have a constitution, would not hold congress and, above all, would have a “levelled” leadership in which Chamisa and his coterie of darlings tower above the rest, and combine all functions of running the outfit!

The reason given is that of fear of infiltration by Zanu-PF. Functionally, this levelled leadership has reduced to Chamisa himself at the zenith, with Fadzai Mahere and young Ostellos just below and in tow. You also have Advocate Fulcrum Mpofu and Hopewell Chin’ono who swear do not belong to the party, dutifully hovering, as if in search of carrion.

There was no talk of transition which Coltart now mentions; there was no talk of party structures or of a constitution, both straitjackets Chamisa is best without.

Not even a congress whose outcome would diminish Chamisa’s glory, both by being the body supremely above, and by being the author of structuring resolutions which would reduce scope for running Triple C by whim and caprice.

ED, don’t leave me behind!

It now makes sense for embittered Mhofu Hwende – who all along thought he was the secretary general — to plead with the President and First Secretary of ZANU-PF — a rival party — to live true to its mantra of “leaving no person and place behind”.

Of course when Hwende made this plea in Kadoma, he creatively gave Zanu-PF’s mantra a new twist: leaving no party-less person behind. It was a plaintive cry of the stressed, a plea for notice and rescue. I hope ED has the heart to come to Hwende’s rescue!

Structures for GoFundMe

Coltart’s bout of candour took us further. He added: “…let me just stress that we are working towards setting up those structures because they are critical towards raising the necessary funds in the run-up to the election. When we get closer to the election, there will be more formal structures set up which will enable people to donate.

In the run-up to the election, obviously the costs will dramatically escalate and we’re going to need our supporters within Zimbabwe and right across the world to donate generously hence there must be structures”, including a bank account which is “specifically designed for the elections-related expenditure.” This is decidedly loaded!

The sponsors have spoken

First, it neatly harkens to Stephen Chan, himself a human deep-stick by which the British Establishment gauges likely electoral outcomes here, Chan’s excoriation, call and exhortation to Chamisa to stop behaving like a schoolboy. Chan, and through him the British, want Chamisa to justify the stupendous investments on him; he has to exhibit serious behaviour of an opposition ready to govern; a serious opposition with solid structures, and instruments of proper constitution, indeed a serious opposition properly manned by shadow figures available for appraisal and endorsement by the sponsoring and handling West.-state media

Mwonzora Visit To Job Sikhala Mystery Deepens

CITIZENS Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has been barred by prison authorities from visiting incarcerated legislators Job Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole but his nemesis Douglas Mwonzora has been granted access.

But Sikhala’s lawyers yesterday said the opposition legislator was not interested in seeing Mwonzora.

Mwonzora yesterday visited Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison where 14 other Nyatsime residents charged alongside Sikhala and Sithole have been detained since June 14. His spokesperson, Witness Dube claimed the MDC T leader had met with Sikhala but Sikhala’s spokesperson Freddy Masarirevu told The Standard that was not true.

Mwonzora visited the Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison with fellow party members.

“I don’t want to comment on Mwonzora’s visit,” Masarirevu said. Just like any other person, he is allowed to visit Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison but I was with comrade Sikhala (yesterday) from 9 am to 12pm and he told me clearly that he was not going to see Mwonzora. He does not want to see him. If they say he (Mwonzora) saw him, they are lying”.

But Mwonzora’s spokesperson Witness insisted that Mwonzora met with Sikhala.

Addressing journalists outside Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, Mwonzora said he did not need permission from anyone to see Sikhala, Sithole and the 14 others while calling for their unconditional release.

Meanwhile, lawyers representing Chamisa said the CCC leader has been denied access to Sikhala, Sithole and the 14 others since their arrest in June. They have threatened to take legal action against this embargo.

In a letter dated October 13, 2022 addressed to Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) commissioner general Moses Chihobvu, Shava Law Chambers representing Chamisa said such a restriction was unlawful.

“He (Chamisa) was advised by the prison guards that he was specifically barred from visiting anyone in prison detention without your written permission. The basis for this requirement could not be easily ascertained from these guards,” the lawyers said.

“We advise that in terms of section 50(5)( c) any person who is detained, including a sentenced prisoner, has a right to communicate with, and be visited by a relative or anyone else of their choice, subject to reasonable restrictions which may be imposed for the proper administration of prisons or places of detention.

“Further, a careful perusal of your prison policies would reveal that there is only a single category of visitors that are not allowed visits, these are those in need of conjugal rights.”

Sikhala faces a separate charge of obstruction of justice. He has been denied bail countless times with the courts pointing out that the legislator is a repeat offender not fit for bail.

“We are of the firm view that the guards, in trying to implement a patently unlawful policy, which seems to be targeted at one individual, our client, might have acted without your blessings,” Chamisa’s lawyers said.

They said denying Chamisa access to Sikhala, Sithole and 14 others was a violation of section 56 of the constitution which guarantees ‘our client the right to equal protection of the law.’

“It is within the above context that we are of the firm view that this is a matter capable of resolution without resorting to costly litigation process which, in any event, would put your office under unnecessary spotlight,” they said.

“We found no reason to approach the courts for recourse before having inquired from you on whether or not it is now a requirement that our client must first get permission from yourself before visiting the aforementioned individuals, and if so kindly furnish us with a copy of the said policy document.”

While addressing the media at Chikurubi yesterday Mwonzora said: “Our view as the MDC is the continual pre-trial incarceration of Job Sikhala and his colleagues  is totally unjustified, we are appealing to the government to release them so that they can be tried while they are coming from home,” said Mwonzora.

“This is an issue about humanity, it’s an issue about the families that were left behind and it is an issue about constitutional right to liberty. I do not require permission in terms of the law from any quarter to see accused people. This is a political issue that must be resolved politically. We believe that the opposition must show solidarity with one another.”

Sikhala says he is a political prisoner.

Recently, hundreds of citizens and other foreign nationals petitioned President Emmerson Mnangagwa pleading with him to intervene to secure the release of the CCC legislators and other members.

But government spokespersons have said Mnangagwa would not intervene out of respect of separation of powers between the Judiciary and the Executive.

Constitutional law expert and politician Lovemore Madhuku has said the arrest and detention of Sikhala and others needed a political solution.

The detainees face charges of incitement to public violence following violent skirmishes at the funeral of slain opposition activist Moreblessing Ali.

Mwonzora Humiliated By Wiwa, After Winning Access To Sikhala Ahead Of Chamisa

Urban Dwellers Labelled Sell-Outs By Mnangagwa

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday described urban dwellers as “sell-outs” for continuing to vote for the opposition.

Addressing thousands of Zanu PF supporters at a rally in Mutasa South constituency, Manicaland to celebrate the party’s March by-election victory, Mnangagwa said evidence dating to days in the liberation war showed that most “sell-outs” were residing in cities and towns.

“I have heard that some parts of Mutasa South are rural and urban. I know that in urban areas when we fought the liberation struggle that’s where most sell-outs ran to. It honestly does not surprise me that those from urban areas don’t support the revolutionary movement because they are sell-outs,” Mnangagwa thundered.

The ruling party has failed to win Mutasa South since the formation of the opposition MDC in 1999.Zanu PF is now on a drive to win urban constituencies in the hands of the opposition, with the party dangling title deeds to urban dwellers, especially in Harare to win votes.

Mnangagwa said youths supporting the opposition were unpatriotic.

“This next generation should be taught to be patriotic about their country. They should be taught that their freedom was brought through the liberation struggle. They are the ones to whom we are going to leave the leadership of this country,” he said.

Mnangagwa said Mutasa South would now benefit from government projects after falling into the hands of the ruling party.

Mnangagwa warned non-governmental organisations to stay away from politics or risk being banned. He also warned against stealing presidential inputs meant to benefit the masses, saying there would be serious consequences.

“If we catch you stealing presidential inputs tikakubata mazuva ako anowunyana (your days will shrink) but if you do the right thing mazuva ako anotandavara (your days will increase).”

Many Zanu PF officials have been caught red-handed looting free presidential inputs amid claims by the opposition that the inputs were being distributed in a partisan manner to buy votes for the ruling party.

Prison Escape

…In 2021, 64 inmates escaped from our prisons, and 52 inmates in 2022 up to date, making a total of 116…

One hundred and sixteen inmates escaped from correctional facilities between January 2021 and October this year, the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has confirmed.

Most of the fugitives were B class inmates, who were allowed to be outside for work duties while serving their terms at medium-security prisons.

In an interview, ZPCS national public relations officer, Chief Superintendent Meya Khanyezi, said Harare Central and Chikurubi Farm prisons had high incidences of prison escapes.

“In 2021, 64 inmates escaped from our prisons, and 52 inmates in 2022 up to date, making a total of 116,” she said.

“Harare Central and Chikurubi Farm prisons have a high incidence of escapes since these stations have more B class inmates, who go out of prison to work.”

Police, however, recaptured 40 escapees during the same period. After escaping, 40 inmates were recaptured — 18 in 2021 and 22 in 2022,” added Chief Supt Khanyezi.

Most fugitives, she said, sneak away after asking for permission to answer the call of nature.

“Some A class inmates also abscond since they will no longer be under escort of a prison officer, given that they are of less risk and would have exhibited good behaviour.”

ZPCS is installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems at maximum prisons, arming its officers and reinforcing the canine section to avert future prison breaks.

In March, a convicted armed robber was recaptured by police after escaping from Harare Central Prison. He spent four months on the run. Richard Sasumba (40) was subsequently charged with attempting to escape from lawful custody.

It was alleged that on October 7 last year, Sasumba, who was serving his sentence at Harare Central Prison after having been convicted at the Bindura Magistrates’ Court of armed robbery, escaped from custody.

On March 9, 2022, police received a tip-off that Sasumba was seen loitering at a shopping centre in Epworth. Police proceeded to the shopping centre and arrested him.-state media

July Moyo Faces Arrest

By-The Parliament would soon be summoning Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo over the use and management of Devolution funds.

Parliament intends to understand the conduct and manner in which Devolution funds are being allocated, disbursed and spent.

Combined Harare Residents Association recently petitioned Parliament over the issue.

On 10 August 2022 CHRA wrote to the Parliament alleging that Devolution funds were being used without supporting legislation and in violation of the principles of devolution provided in Section 264 of the Zimbabwean Constitution.

Key examples of unconstitutional actions that were raised in the petition include;

1) The Local Government Minister’s directive for the City of Harare to use “devolution funds” to purchase water pumps from Petrichor Irrigation at a cost of USD$9.3 million without going to tender.

2) The Local Government Minister’s directive to the City of Harare through a circular dated 14 June 2022 instructing the Local Authority to purchase fire tenders costing USD$464 000 each from a Belarus company using “devolution funds”, without going to tender and without consulting residents and the Local Authority.

To that note, CHRA beseeched Parliament to:

i. Summon the Minister of Local Government to appear before Parliament and explain the Constitutionality of its actions.

ii. Summon the Minister of Local Government to appear before Parliament and share the revenue allocation formulae used to allocate and disburse “devolution funds” to Local Authorities and an update of “devolution funds” disbursed to the City of Harare.

iii. Summon the Minister of Local Government to bring Bills that will guide devolution implementation as provided by the Constitution so that Parliament behind can enact enabling legislation (Act of Parliament), which guides the allocation of “devolution funds” and devolution implementation.

iv. Summon the City of Harare to appear before Parliament and share on the performance of “devolution funds” allocated to it for the periods January to December 2021 and January to June 2022 by the Minister of Local Government.

Zvinyau Attack Learners

By- Thugs, believed to be Gure dancers, stormed Zengeza 2 High School twice and savagely attacked learners, leaving several nursing injuries.

The hoodlums are said to be Nyau dancers from the Kumapositori area in St Mary’s.

They are reported to have removed some precast wall panels to gain entry into the school premises and attacked pupils, confiscating their cellphones and laptops.
A teacher, who identified himself as Mr Sibiya, told H-Metro the incident was reported to the police, who are conducting investigations.
“There were a number of hooligans who stormed the school and attacked some learners,” said Sibiya.
“The matter is now being handled by police and the precast wall panels destroyed are being replaced.
“A number of teachers were away attending a funeral on the day the thugs terrorised learners in their classrooms,” he said.
Pupils marched to the school’s administration block demonstrating against school authorities for failing to stem continued bullying at the school.
A teacher, who identified himself as Mr Sibiya, told H-Metro the incident was reported to the police, who are conducting investigations.
“There is a lot of bullying at the school,” said one of the learners.
“We demonstrated against school authorities for not taking action since a number of these ugly incidents took place in front of their eyes.
“Vana veForm 2 vakarohwa vakatarisa uye hakazi kekutanga kuti vanhu vanopinda pachikoro vachirova vana.
“We are appealing for urgent attention on this matter because some of the pupils are now hesitant to come to school.
“School authorities fear these so-called Nyau dancers, but we cannot be exposed to such brutality.
“Deputy head tavaudza vakati madii kutiza. Our security at school is compromised, and we are not safe,” said the pupil.
The attack followed a fight between two students over a hat.
One of the pupils, from the Mapositori area in St Mary’s, is believed to have called the Nyau dancers to attack other learners, in retaliation.
The school has had its fair share of violent incidents.
A Zengeza 2 High pupil teamed up with his friends and went to a private school, in Manyame Park, where he killed a pupil in a knife attack, last year.
Two cops were patrolling the school yesterday when an H-Metro crew visited.

Respect African Charter On Human Rights, Mnangagwa Told

Biti Blasts Thieving Zanu PF Regime

Tinashe Sambiri| CCC vice president Hon Tendai Biti has slammed the Zanu PF regime for attempting to rob miners.

The Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa says a new policy that compels miners to pay half of their royalties in commodities and half in cash will be effected from this month as the country attempts to build precious metal and mineral stockpiles for the first time.

However, Biti has described the regime as clueless and desperate.

“The regime’s directives that half of mining royalties must be paid as processed ore with effect from October is one of those ill thought zany ideas that reflect vacuousness & cluelessness

For starters no changes in royalties regime can be made without changes in the law & parliament s involvement & approval. Secondly whilst a case can be made for building gold reserves , it is absolute insanity to keep reserves of chrome ,lithium or platinum . Why and what for ?

Minerals are not liquid & have fluid values determined by international commodity markets . Determining value for royalty purposes will always be a challenge . Particularly for platinum which has at least 6 derivative metals including rhodium. nickel , gold & silver,” Hon Biti argued.

Kante Not Going To World Cup

N’Golo Kante has reportedly been ruled out of the upcoming World Cup after suffering a reaction to an existing hamstring injury.

The 31-year-old France international has not played since mid-August due to the hamstring issue.

“He returned to training a week ago but suffered the reaction on Monday.

“He’s due to see a consultant at the weekend. It’s a setback, it’s not good news, but I can’t give you anything more at this stage,” Chelsea coach Graham Potter told the press on Friday.

“Historically there are things which have happened which is a concern, so we need to get to the bottom of that.

“It’s a setback at this stage of this rehab which is worrying but all we can do is get the right diagnosis, get the right consultation, and try and help him get back to full fitness and enjoying his football.”

According to L’Equipe, it has now been revealed that the midfielder will not be fit in time to play at the World Cup.

The update has already been communicated by Potter to the France Football Federation (FFF).

The midfielder was vital to France’s success in Russia four years ago and would be a big miss for Didier Deschamps’s side.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Govt Says People Like Mnangagwa Disqualified From Running Public Office

ZIYAMBI ZIYAMBI

Govt has announced that ex convicts the type of ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa cannot run for office.

Individuals convicted of offences related to public violence, breach of trust and dishonesty at least a year before sitting of the nomination court would be ineligible to contest for public office under proposed amendments to the Electoral Act set to be tabled in Parliament soon, it has been learnt.
The planned amendments will also make a driver’s licence inadmissible as proof of identity for voting.

Mnangagwa was convicted of sabotating a train in 1965 and the offence was serious to the point that he nearly got the death penalty.

In addition, duly nominated candidates for National Assembly and local authority elections can now only withdraw their candidature 21 days before a poll.

Presently, time limits to the withdrawal of candidacy are only limited to presidential candidates.

This provision is designed to afford the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) sufficient time to make changes to ballots and advise the electorate.

Overall, there are four broad changes to the country’s electoral code that were approved by Cabinet a fortnight ago.

The new Bill essentially seeks to complete the alignment of the Electoral Act with the Constitution as amended last year, including making provisions for the introduction of the 30 percent female quota in all local authorities and the youth quota in the National Assembly.

Crucially, it also seeks to operationalise Section 129 (1)(i) of the Constitution, which bars politicians convicted of physical violence, breach of trust and dishonesty from running for public office.

The Bill’s memorandum seen by The Sunday Mail reads: “An offence of this nature is one for which a Member of Parliament is presently under Section 129 of the Constitution required to vacate his or her seat.

“For the sake of consistency, it is proposed that persons who would be disqualified from continuing as MPs for committing such an offence should not also be allowed to stand as candidates for election.

“Guided by the principle that offenders who would be disqualified from continuing to sit in Parliament should not be admitted into Parliament, this clause will require every candidate to make a solemn declaration in a nomination form or by means of an attached affidavit that he or she is not convicted of a disqualifying offence or has received a pardon for such offence.”

With less than a year before the next general elections, some politicians currently appearing before the courts on charges of public violence could face disqualification if convicted.

In its present form, the Electoral Act requires a prospective voter to present either a national ID card, valid passport or driver’s licence to a polling officer to cast their ballot.

However, the envisaged changes will exclude the driver’s licence.

“Some driver’s licences do not reflect citizenship on the face of them,” the memorandum reads.

“In terms of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, one has to be a citizen in order to qualify as a voter.

“Accordingly, only a valid passport or national identity will be accepted as proof of identity.”

According to Section 107 (1) of the Electoral Act, a presidential candidate can withdraw his or her candidature 21 days before polling.

The Act, however, is silent on time frames for the withdrawal of National Assembly and council election candidates.

“To afford sufficient time for ZEC to make changes to the design of the ballot and to advise the electorate of any changes to the candidature of that election, these clauses seek to amend Sections 49 and 126 of the Electoral Act so that they are aligned to Section 107 (1) of the principal Act for withdrawal of candidature to be done 21 days before polling.”

Amendments to the Constitution, passed into law last year, provide for the setting aside of 30 percent of seats in local authorities for women and the creation of 10 new proportional representation seats for youths in the National Assembly.

The Electoral Act is now being amended to include provisions to operationalise these changes as set out in the supreme law.

Reads the Bill: “For every electoral province, there shall be elected by indirect proportional representation one youth member; that is, a person aged from twenty-one to thirty-five years of age.

“For every local authority (whether that local authority is a rural district council, city, municipal council, town council or local board) there shall be elected by indirect proportional representation the number of women party list councillors equal to the integer or nearest integer ….”

Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said changes to the Act were informed by the need to operationalise new electoral provisions introduced when Constitutional Amendment Number 2 was signed into law.

“Broadly, we are introducing four major changes to the Electoral Act that encompass disqualification of candidates, proof of identity, withdrawal of candidates and the introduction of the women and youth quotas in councils and the National Assembly, respectively,” he said.

“The first one has to do with removing the driver’s licence as an acceptable proof of identity for the purposes of voting. This is because these documents do not show status in terms of citizenship.

“In terms of the law, voting is only for Zimbabwean citizens, so we cannot have a non-citizen with a Zimbabwean driver’s licence voting in our elections.”

Minister Ziyambi said candidates will be disqualified from contesting in elections particularly for offences similar to those that force an MP to vacate his seat once convicted.

“It aligns the Act to Section 129 of the Constitution.”

Zimbabwe Election Support Network chairperson Mr Andrew Makoni said the proposal to codify the women and youth quotas is in keeping with recent amendments to the Constitution.

“Providing for a period within which one can withdraw her or his candidacy before an election is also positive as this will allow ZEC enough time to print ballots for the elections.

“We can only comment on the other provisions of the proposed Bill once it has been published,” he said. Sunday Mail

Apprehend Third Force, MP Tells Government

Woman Kills Lover Over Food

A 31-YEAR-OLD woman from Lobengula suburb in Bulawayo who allegedly stabbed her 47-year-old live-in boyfriend to death following a dispute over late supper has appeared in court charged with murder.

Agrenna Chimala allegedly cold bloodedly murdered her boyfriend Mxolisi Sibanda who was self-employed as a builder. This was after she allegedly stabbed him with a kitchen knife once in the neck.

Agrenna was not formally charged with murder as defined in Section 47 (1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 when she briefly appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Busani Sibanda who remanded her in custody to October 14.

The magistrate advised her to apply for bail at the High Court.

The court heard that on 27 September at around 12pm the now deceased and accused visited their friend McLean Dube at his place where they later had lunch together.

After having lunch they all went to Esiqongweni Tavern in Lobengula West to drink beer.
While drinking beer, the court heard that the now deceased received a phone call from his daughter who invited him to come to her house in Pumula South to collect a bag of mealie-meal.

The now deceased reportedly left the accused in the company of Dube. Before he left he reportedly advised them that he was going to phone Dube on his way back so that they could meet him at the intersection of Intemba and Luveve road and assist him carry the mealie-meal.

Soon after her boyfriend had left, Agrenna reportedly requested Dube to escort her to Masunda Shopping Centre in New Lobengula to buy mealie-meal.

After buying it, the two then went together to the now deceased and accused’s place. Upon arrival, the accused further asked Dube to go to one of the houses in the suburb to collect her sister’s child and bring him home.

Dube went and when he came back with the child, the court heard, he found the now deceased shouting at Agrenna while quizzing her why she didn’t come to meet him at the intersection of Intemba and Luveve road.

The now deceased also shouted at Dube also questioning him why he didn’t come to assist him carry the mealie-meal.

In response Dube defended himself saying it was because the now deceased had not phoned him as they had previously agreed before he left.

The court further heard that after that brief quarrel Dube and the now deceased left home and went back to Esiqongweni Tavern to continue with their booze.

It is alleged that on the same day and at around 8pm the now deceased and Dube arrived home from Esiqongweni and found the accused who had not cooked anything seated on the sofa.

That, however, didn’t go down well with the now deceased who asked her why she had not cooked but the accused reportedly didn’t answer him.

In a fit of anger, the now deceased reportedly shouted at her with vul_gar words and sensing danger Dube quickly went out of the house and proceeded to his place leaving behind the two parties arguing.

It is reported that the now deceased and accused continued shouting at each other until the verbal war degenerated into a fist fight.

At the height of the fight the now deceased reportedly took a hammer and at the same time the accused also took a kitchen knife.

It is yet to be proven that when the now deceased tried to hit his lover with it, she blocked it with one of her hands and in the process she allegedly stabbed him once in the neck.

The accused reportedly tried to render first aid to the now deceased who was now lying on the ground unconscious but with no success.

She then tried to open the door and she failed to do so after she didn’t locate the keys which had been taken by the now deceased who was not able to talk.

In a state of panic, she used the hammer to break the bedroom window and escaped through it before she rushed to Dube’s place.

Upon arrival she narrated to Dube what had happened, and without wasting time they rushed back to the house where they found the now deceased still alive but not able to talk.

They both left the house and went to ZRP Magwegwe to report the matter.

The police reportedly phoned an ambulance which upon arrival found Sibanda dead and that subsequently led to Agrenna’ arrest.

About Dementia

By Showbiz Reporter | He might be Father Harare, the capital city’s dad of music, but the CCC musician appeared to lose his morals by snaking down for the ZANU PF coup leader on Saturday.

Braveman Chizvino, is on video staging for Mnangagwa in what the politician’s spokesman, George Charamba celebrated as a defection.

Legislator Demands Answers From Govt Over ‘Teachers For ED’ Threats

Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislator Prince Dubeko Sibanda yesterday took Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi to task over an association by the name Teachers for ED which he accused of coercing teachers and headmasters to its meetings saying government should protect the profession from political groupings.

In his question to Ziyambi who is the Leader of Government business in parliament Minister, Sibanda demanded to know the government policy in protecting teachers from politically aligned associations.

“Hon. Speaker, there is an association for teachers that goes by the name of ‘Teachers for ED’ which is coercing District Schools Inspectors and school headmasters to attend its meetings and functions. What is the Government policy in protecting teachers from this coercion, and intimidation by a political association of teachers? I thank you,” said Sibanda.

In response, Ziyambi said the law does not allow anyone to join a political party except of their own choice.

“Thank you Madam Speaker Ma’am. Hon. Sibanda says that there are teachers who are being forced to join a political party that is not of their choice. Our law does not allow anyone to join a political party except of their own free volition. I thank you,” responded Ziyambi Ziyambi.

Sibanda further questioned if members of the Teachers for ED will be allowed to be polling officers when they are clearly politically aligned.

“Madam Speaker, my supplementary question to the Hon. Leader of Government Business is, looking at the fact that this association is politically aligned; will those members of that
association be allowed to be polling officers in the next general election, looking at the fact that they are politically aligned? I thank you,” further questioned Sibanda.

Chamisa Smelling Victory In 2023

Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change leader Nelson Chamisa has expressed optimism that the opposition will win next year’s elections given “a wave” of opposition triumphs in the Southern African Development Community  region over the past two years.

This follows opposition party victories in recent elections in Zambia, Malawi and most recently in Lesotho.

Zimbabwe and Nigeria are headed for general elections next year.

Final results of the general elections held in Lesotho last week showed that the Revolution for Prosperity, an opposition party formed six months prior to the election, won 56 out of 120 seats in parliamentary elections.

Chamisa tweeted:  “Congratulations to the great people of #Lesotho for choosing the new, choosing hope over familiarity.  Malawi did it. Zambia did it. Lesotho has done it. Nigeria will do it. We’re next. Zimbabwe we will do it! Young people shall save Africa. Play your part. Bring the change. Serve and save our Zimbabwe. Get involved. One is more. Your voice matters. Your vote counts.”

South African opposition leader Mmusi Maimane, founder of the One South Africa Movement, a coalition of independent politicians intending to contest the South African 2024 elections said opposition wins in Malawi, Zambia and Lesotho heralded democratic change in Sadc countries.

“There is a wind of democratic change in southern Africa. First it was Malawi, then it was Zambia, now a brand new party in Lesotho has shaken the country,” Maimane said.

“Next year it will be Zimbabwe gaining its second independence. Then in 2024, we the people of SA will remove the African National Congress,” Maimane said.

We Have Structures, Says CCC Leader Nelson Chamisa

Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) leader, Nelson Chamisa has hinted at the existence of structures within his new party, telling NewZimbabwe.com that those who do not know about them were not part of the opposition family.

Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com after burial of journalist Abigail Gamanya in Harare, Thursday, Chamisa said those within his party knew of the existence of structures.

He was responding to questions regards criticism his movement has been receiving from various quarters, earlier this year.

“Who said the party does not have structures? There is a difference in saying the party has no structures and saying that we do not know the party structures,” said Chamisa.

“If you do not know then you are not part of the family, but those who are part of the family know that you cannot exist in form and and shape without a structure,” Chamisa said

Exiled former Cabinet minister Mzembi questions Zanu PF’s interests in CCC Structures: Says ruling party engulfed by demons
Chamisa urges Prof Moyo to tone down CCC lack of structures criticism; exiled former minister defiant
“Parties with no structures, constitution should be barred from contesting elections,” says Professor Moyo in latest attack on CCC.

Exiled former cabinet minister, Jonathan Moyo has led the barrage against CCC, despite it earlier having excited his interest and enticed him at inception in February.

Chamisa’s leadership style has also been put under scrutiny by academic Alfred Mavedzenge, whose weekly columns have been highlighting gaps within the democratic movement.

At formation, Chamisa made it public the party would operate without the usual structures, which had been in use in the MDC Alliance or were evident in Zanu PF.

He has maintained presidency under the tag ‘Change Champion-In-Chief.’

Chamisa told supporters at various rallies, effecting structures across the country would open it up to infiltration ahead of elections in 2023.

Meanwhile, Gamanya was buried at Warren Hills Cemetery in the presence of workmates, family, friends who included Information Deputy Minister, Kindness Paradza, Zimbabwe National Editors Forum (ZINEF) coordinator Njabulo Ncube, young journalists and her former mentees.

Ncube said the gap she left in media advocacy will be difficult to fill.

Ziyambi Says Sikhala Is Being Punished For Breaching Previous Bail Conditions

The government claims Zengeza West MP, Job Sikhala (CCC), who has been in pre-trial detention for more than 100 days on allegations of inciting violence, violated past bail conditions, thereby resulting in the courts rejecting his new bail applications.

The outspoken lawmaker is said to have been arrested 67 times but has no single conviction. He has been denied bail five times by the courts in the current case.

Sikhala, Chitungwiza North MP, Godfrey Sithole, and other CCC activists from Nyatsime were arrested on 14 June 2022 after attending the funeral of political activist Moreblessing Ali.

Ali was brutally murdered and her remains were dumped in a disused well and were only discovered three weeks after she had gone missing.

Responding to questions in the Senate on Thursday from Senators who wanted to know how the government was handling the matter, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Ziyambi Ziyambi, said:

My understanding is that you are on bail on a specific case and there are conditions that are attached to that.

If you violate your bail conditions then the bail will not be granted should you commit another offence. That is a general principle.

The individual so concerned, my understanding which I just read, not to say that I was schooled by the Judiciary from going to ask about judicial decision but that is not my duty; the decision of the courts was on the basis of the fact that bail was granted, bail conditions were violated and that is the reason to deny bail.
When we are in court, sometimes as politicians, we must refrain from abusing the courts for political expediency,” said Ziyambi.

Burnt To Death

…We are distraught as a family after the two tragedies that have befallen us…

When Kesari Sibanda’s coffin was unloaded from a hearse at Red Rose Farm’s football ground yesterday, his family broke down in tears.

Sibanda’s family was one of the 10 families who were gathered under the tent that housed relatives and friends of the denary men who were burnt to death, some beyond recognition while trying to fight a veld fire that broke out at Red Rose Farm Lot 43 on Monday.

The Minister of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Nqobizitha Ndlovu, Umzingwane MP Brigadier General (Rtd) Levi Mayihlome, Environmental Management Agency Board Chairperson Ambassador Zenzo Nsimbi, Zanu-F Politburo Member Cde Richard Ndlovu, Umzingwane District Development Coordinator (DDC) Mrs Siphathisiwe Mlotshwa and Insiza DDC Mr Zacharia Jusa attended the service.

The owner of Lot 43, Abel Moyo and his business partner, Mike Stone, who runs Red Rose Farm and their families were also among the mourners.

Cries of pain and heartbreak from women pierced the air as they wept at the sight of coffin after coffin carried to the centre of the gathering by Doves Funeral Services pallbearers.

It was sad to see 10 coffins lined up. Some of the deceased were too young to die — Luzibo Tshuma was just 18 when he met his death.

His uncle, Tobias Simusonde Kamambo said it was a double tragedy for their family as on the same day when Luzibo met his demise in Esigodini, his aunt’s huts was going down in flames in Binga.

“We had a very painful problem. When Luzibo encountered his death due to a veld fire in Esigodini, in Binga on the same day, my sister, Luzibo’s aunt, had her hut burnt down by a veld fire. We are distraught as a family after the two tragedies that have befallen us,” said Kamambo.

He said Luzibo will be buried at their rural home of Chisiizya under Chief Sinamagonde in Binga.

It was a double blow for Cryton Mudimba as he lost his brother Ian Mudimba (38) and his nephew, Oliver Mudenda (27).

Mourners break down during a mass funeral service in Esigodini yesterday

Ian leaves behind a wife and three children, while Oliver’s death has orphaned his two minor children and widowed his wife.

Thabani Sibanda, the uncle of Kesari Sibanda (53) said his death was heart-wrenching.

“We called him baba saMdawini. We have lost a father, grandfather and uncle. I would like to thank President Mnangagwa who sat down with the arms of Government and saw it fit to help us. Alone we wouldn’t have been able to. We are in mourning with the families who also lost their loved ones,” said Sibanda.

He said the father of six will be buried today at their rural home of Figtree in Matabeleland South province.

Petros Mdlongwa lost his brother Simon in the inferno, and said the family was left speechless.

“He was very respectful and had a good heart. I don’t remember even one instance that he was disrespectful to his elders or to anyone else. He touched a lot of lives and people testify that he was a good man,” said Mdlongwa. -Chronicle

Never Thought I Would Catch COVID

By Simba Chikanza | Last year I refused to get vaccine booster jabs; as I never envisioned I would ever catch COVID; but I got the surprise of my life on 3rd Oct 2022 when my heart manifested palpitations that resulted in me being hospitalised. It all began with chest pains as I rushed to a meeting on the Monday morning, and then an NHS phonecall suggested I be checked by paramedics. At that time, I thought it’s just another tired morning, and my body is just lazy. I however got shocked when the scan reading reported that my heart was not pumping correctly. They gave me some medication which included a spray under the tongue, that brought on me instant headaches and suddenly I lost vision due to the migranes.

In hospital….Simba Chikanza

By that time people were busy phoning me like any other day, thinking all is normal and I must do their stories. I must perform efficiently all the time no matter what, as always, and I am not allowed any excuse. But well, humanity catches up in the end, and the limitations speak louder than the persistent demands for service. I wish I had the same funding as the BBC, CNN or ZBC so I can attend every phonecall; I ended up getting a picture uploaded to the many women calling me, so the image speaks for itself. Everything was done hurriedly as I am in pain.

Arriving into the hospital, it’s horror after horror- I am told that I will go straight into theatre, for it could be a heart attack I am experiencing. All tests are done including blood ones, and after passing everything, I am declared COVID Positive. I refuse to accept this as it’s not happened before, but after a second test, a PCR, the same result is read back to me. Tough time. They now tell me I will be in hospital for the next 7 days, and the horror of my life begins. I’ve never been hospitalised before and my greatest scare is over an assassination while in hospital: anyone can enter with an NHS suit and finish the sports on me, as they say in Shona English.

Where and how on earth did I catch this thing? Was I poisoned on my last visit to Zambia in Sept? It doesn’t matter where, cause the fact is I now have it in my blood streams.

At this stage the hospital doctors have told me that there is nothing new to my situation as there is a surge of admissions caused by COVID infections. But when I check on the Internet what they are saying does not match up as numbers appear falling. They however make it clear to me that these days people are no longer reporting as they used to.

My horrors are made worse when a Zimbabwean nurse I don’t know creeps into my closed room to speak with me in Shona.

“Makadiniko vaChikanza?” she asks me without revealing her full name. She quickly walks away before get to discover who she is.

All this while I thought no Zimbabwean knows where I am, but alas, by now, even my enemies, Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa and his corrupt gang already know my physical location; or so I fear. Last time in Nov 2019, I got told he is after me and has sent assailants to hurt me.

It’s a dingy dark night, and these could be my last moments on earth, as I am a target because recently I helped in chopping Mnangagwa’s legs in his home country, (Northern Zimbabwe) Zambia which he was controlling over the last presidential term. My 13 Aug 2021 presidential interview helped in effecting successful regime change over there.

What’s more scary is the fact that the ZANU PF Secretary for Administration, Obert Mpofu publicly accused me of owning the demonstrators who blocked Mnangagwa from drinking beer with his party members in Glasgow on 1st Nov 2021.

The first night in hospital is too long and I can’t sleep, as anything can happen to me. I only shut my eyes at around 3am, and wake up after 9am. Thank the heavens I am alive, at least. A 2nd blood test is done, and after I complain to the hospital they finally decide to allow me out of the institution on the 2nd day. By this time I am dizzy and struggling to walk, and it’s only at 7pm that I manage to complete my discharge. They’ve allowed me out at last. As I walk out, a sigh of relief comforts me, though I can’t tell if I will make it home. Eventually I do get there, but only after I’ve learnt the lessons of my life: that anyone can catch COVID. It’s come back, and we need to be vigilant.

Mnangagwa Yet To Formally Communicate With Late Ndabaningi Sithole Family Over National Hero Status

Government is yet to consult with the late Ndabaningi Sithole’s family over the nationalist’s hero status and a special gala being organised in his honour in Chipinge, a family spokesperson has told NewsDay Weekender.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa recently posthumously conferred national hero status on Sithole nearly 22 years after he was buried at a low-key event at his family farm in Mt Selinda, Chipinge, following his fallout with the Zanu PF leadership during the liberation struggle.

On Tuesday, Information ministry permanent secretary Ndavaningi Mangwana announced that the government was planning a music gala to honour Sithole.

“The Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) is working on a musical gala to celebrate the life of the late former Zanu leader and national hero, Rev Ndabaningi Sithole.

The gala will be in Chipinge where he hailed from. We will soon provide the actual date and other specifics,” Mangwana tweeted.

However, Sithole’s daughter Sifiso Sithole-Barrow said government had not yet made formal contact with the family.

“Government has not made any formal communication with the family. Once the government contacts the family formally and discussions are held, we will be happy to share with you and others.”she said.

Zambian Kwacha Overtakes South African Rand

The Zambian kwacha is now stronger than the South African rand.

At about 09:20 am on Friday, one Zambian kwacha was worth R1,15.

At the same time, the rand traded at R18.20 to one US dollar, after it took a beating at close on the previous day, due to the greenback strengthening on the back of an expected interest rate hike as US inflation remained elevated.

South Africa’s economy has been dealt blow after blow this year, while still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The South African Reserve Bank has been on an upward trend of raising interest rates, in an attempt to curb soaring inflation all year, with oil prices see-sawing for most of the year, as well as dealing with the energy crisis and rolling blackouts imposed by the state-owned ailing power utility, Eskom, just to name a few.

Rand takes drubbing as dollar strengthens amid fears of looming US interest rate hike
Minerals Council South Africa urges a speedy resolution to the damaging Transnet strike
African Bank’s R1.5 billion deal to buy Grindrod Bank is ‘approved’

Yesterday, the rand breached the R18.50 mark. The annual inflation rate in the US slowed for the third month running to 8.2% in September, the lowest in seven months, compared with 8.3% in August, but above market forecasts of 8.1%.

As the latest US inflation print came in above expectations, investors feared this might fuel further hawkish rhetoric by US Federal Reserve officials to keep up with hefty rate increases.

This saw emerging markets currencies suffering losses in the financial markets yesterday, as the fears drove risk-averse investors to safer havens, with the dollar again approaching its highest levels in 20 years.

Meanwhile, Zambia’s kwacha gained 27% against the dollar this year, driven by the election of Hakainde Hichilema.

Investors have bet heavily on the new government of that country securing a bailout deal with the International Monetary Fund.

The rand, had already been dealt a blow by Wednesday’s US Federal Open Market Committee minutes, which revealed the escalation in the hawkish tone last month when members increased their interest rate hike forecasts in a firm focus on lowering inflation.

Analysts said the rand was at risk of further losses now, as the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) would take a cue from the Fed and increase interest rates significantly at its last meeting for the year next month.

To date, the US Fed has hiked rates by 300 basis points, while the SARB’s rate-hike cycle has encapsulated 275 basis points since it began in November 2021.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Matabeleland South Province, Inspector Glory Banda, confirmed the incident.

He identified the victims as Edith and Nonhlanhla Ndlovu who are related.

The two women were asleep in a cabin at Lusinga mine when two suspected armed robbers broke in and shot at them before robbing them.

Shamu Implicated In Chegutu Evictions

By- Zanu PF Chegutu MP webster Shamu is working with a group of Army Generals planning to evict over 300 Chegutu families.

The Junta wants these families to pave the way for a proposed platinum project they want to run.

NewZimbabwe reports that the Junta has reportedly called an emergency meeting to sanitise the plan.

The firm, which was reported to be co-owned by the Chinese and military personnel, is headed by one Major General Ncube and his colleagues, it has emerged.

Representatives of the firm called for an emergency meeting Tuesday night, with headmen, farmer representative groups and Chegutu legislator, Webster Shamu.

Zimbabwe Indigenous Women Farmers founder, Depinah Nkomo confirmed the meeting was held, before expressing anger over secrecy surrounding the attempt to evict occupants. Nkomo said:

We were pained by the issue. All this time we were told it was a Chinese firm only till today we were told it belonged to an army general and his mates.

They didn’t want to tell people that because of self-pride. Due to pain, we called some reporters and the stories written thereafter reached all parts of the country and abroad, and that is when they called for an emergency meeting.

We can honestly say the outcome of the meeting was favourable and what they told us today was different from what we were being told previously.

Headman Almsdeeds Dambiranwa told NewZimbabwe.com that villagers at Hopewell farm would no longer be affected by the impending mining venture, which would only affect a nearby wildlife safari lodge.

July Moyo Under Fire Over Corruption, Faces Arrest

By-The Parliament would soon be summoning Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo over the use and management of Devolution funds.

Parliament intends to understand the conduct and manner in which Devolution funds are being allocated, disbursed and spent.

Combined Harare Residents Association recently petitioned Parliament over the issue.

On 10 August 2022 CHRA wrote to the Parliament alleging that Devolution funds were being used without supporting legislation and in violation of the principles of devolution provided in Section 264 of the Zimbabwean Constitution.

Key examples of unconstitutional actions that were raised in the petition include;

Govt Speaks Speaks On Soiled, Tattered US Dollars In Circulation

Zimbabweans were forced to buy new United States dollar notes on the streets and other private money agencies as old worn-out notes were being rejected by users on the market, it has emerged.

Government revealed Wednesday during the Parliament question and answer session that it had no clue on how to resolve the matter of soiled USD notes that were either worn out or tattered.

Leader of government business in Parliament and Justice Minister, Ziyambi Ziyambi, said government did not have any powers over the USD currency, which belongs to the American government.

The currency came into use in 2009 during the GNU and the new dispensation in 2018 adopted it as the local dollar had been shunned over its depreciation in value due to inflation.

However, as the currency is wholly owned by the US government, Zimbabwe has no authority to issue new US dollar notes.

Zanu-PF Mt Darwin South MP, Steven Kabozo requested to know government policy regards the worn out US dollar notes which were in circulation.

“I have noted with concern that even at our toll gates they are no longer accepting even slightly torn notes which is worrisome, taking into consideration that we do not print US dollar notes here in Zimbabwe. What is the government policy measure in place to get rid of this activity?”

In response, Ziyambi, without elaborating what was said in the statement, told the House that “the owners of the notes (US government), through their embassy issued a statement that was made public on the usage of those notes.

“I think, as government, we cannot issue a contrary statement to what they said.”

However, Kabozo reminded Ziyambi that there were agencies across the country who were now buying the tattered and torn USD notes at a rate half of the amount of the note on offer, which he described as daylight robbery.

“What is the government doing to get rid of this discord in the market? I rest my case.”

The minister said, “This is not our currency. It is a US American government currency. We do not have any control whatsoever over it and we do not even control what happens beyond our borders. So I am not the right person to issue a policy over a currency that does not belong to the Zimbabwean government.”

The issue of currency use and choice has been topical in Zimbabwe due to issues of inflation and disparities in exchange rate.

However, the government has allowed the use of both local (ZWL) and foreign currencies on the market.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe National Roads Authority (ZINARA), a government entity, has reportedly been refusing local currency.

A ZINARA official, who refused to be identified, said workers manning toll gates had been instructed not to accept the Zimbabwean dollar.

Zambian Kwacha Now Stronger Than South African Rand

Stammering Trainee Cop Fired From ZRP

A trainee police officer, Vengai Chikurungeni, was discharged from the job after he was deemed unfit for policing duties for stammering.

And luck has not been on the side of the ex-constable, who also had his appeal against Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) bosses squashed by the High Court for approaching the court late.

Chikurungeni, who was attached at Morris Depot, dragged police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga and the Police Service Commission to court challenging unfair dismissal.

His employer, according to court papers, informed him he had serious communication problems, which would be an obstacle in discharging his duties.

Chikurungeni, however, filed his application for review after the stipulated time had lapsed at law.

He was supposed to file his appeal within eight weeks from the day of his dismissal, but only approached the courts way after that period.

“Rule 62 of the High Court Rules, 2021 deals with reviews. In particular r (62) (4) provides: (4) Any proceedings by way of review shall be instituted within eight weeks of the termination of the suit, action or proceedings in which the irregularity or illegality complained of is alleged to have occurred: Provided that the court may for good cause shown extend the time.

“Accordingly, it is trite that an application for review must be filed within eight (8) weeks of the termination of the suit, action or proceedings in which the irregularity or illegality complained of is alleged to have occurred.

“The applicant averred that on the 31st of January 2022 he was called by Inspector Gwaka who gave him a letter of termination of employment which was backdated or dated 28th December 2021, and he signed it.

“Other than his mere say so, he could not provide proof of his averments. On the other hand, the respondents managed to produce documentary evidence capturing the proceedings leading to the discharge of the applicant.

“In particular the respondents produced evidence by way of a Radio dated 23 December 2021 advising Chikurungeni of the decision to discharge him from the Police Service. Going by that document the applicant was advised of his fate as early as the 23 of December 2021,”said the judge.

He ruled, “The application is dismissed for failure to comply with the Rules and the applicant is to pay costs on the ordinary scale.”

Chikurungeni was attested in the ZRP, which falls under the Police Service Commission, on August 27, 2021 as a trainee.

He was undergoing training at Morris Depot.

Court papers show that in September 2021 appellant was called by Inspector Gwaka who told him that he was not fit to be a police officer since he was a stammerer.

The following month he was called by the Depot Commandant who asked if he was a stammer, and he confirmed that.

In December 2021 he was summoned by a Dr. Nyakudya who said that he wanted to examine if his condition would allow him to remain in the police service.

He was duly examined and told results will be communicated later.

On January 31 this year, appellant was called by Inspector Gwaka who gave him a letter of termination of employment which was “backdated or dated” 28th December 2021 and was asked to sign it.

He complied, but later decided to challenge his employer’s decision to discharge him under the stated circumstances.

His employer opposed the application and said he filed his appeal late and did not seek condonation.

Chikurungeni denied that he was discharged in December 2021 and averred that he was asked to sign a backdated document but could not provide proof.

Parliament to Summon Minister of Local Government over the Use and Management of Devolution Funds

By CHRA| Parliament will soon be summoning the Minister of Local Government over the conduct and manner in which devolutions funds are being allocated, disbursed and spent, following CHRA’s petition to Parliament over the issue.

On 10 August 2022 CHRA petitioned Parliament over the conduct by the Ministry of Local Government and manner in which devolution funds are being allocated, disbursed and spent without supporting legislation and in violation of the principles of devolution provided in Section 264 of the Zimbabwean Constitution.

Key examples of unconstitutional actions that were raised in the petition include;
To that note CHRA beseached Parliament to:
i. Summon the Minister of Local Government to appear before Parliament and explain the Constitutionality of its actions.
ii. Summon the Minister of Local Government to appear before Parliament and share the revenue allocation formulae used to allocate and disburse “devolution funds” to Local Authorities and an update of “devolution funds” disbursed to the City of Harare.
iii. Summon the Minister of Local Government to bring Bills that will guide devolution implementation as provided by the Constitution so that Parliament behind can enact an enabling legislation (Act of Parliament), which guides the allocation of “devolution funds” and devolution implementation.
iv. Summon the City of Harare to appear before Parliament and share on the performance of “devolution funds” allocated to it for the periods January to December 2021 and January to June 2022 by the Minister of Local Government.

If You Do Not Know Our Structures, You Are Not Part Of Us: Chamisa

“If you do not know then you are not part of the family, but those who are part of the family know that you cannot exist in form and and shape without a structure,” Chamisa said.

At formation, Chamisa made it public the party would operate without the usual structures, which had been in use in the MDC Alliance or were evident in Zanu-PF.

Biti Blasts Zanu PF Crooks

We are going there for a postmortem and a grassroots mobilization program so that we build from there.”

One social media observer said :

“Cde we are concerned with the numbers which are not tallying for example the number of registered voters is 450 then the results are like this Zanu pf 380 & CCC got 220 which is we have got 150 unknown ghost voters .Even if we are going to mobilize million ppl they rig.”

According to official results published by the Zimbabwe Election Commission (ZEC) in Nyanga Ward 27, Nyazenga Simon of Zanu PF garnered 376 while Tichiwangani Artwell Taurai of CCC got 123.

Anglican Priest Fired Over Infidelity

By-A priest with the Anglican Diocese of Harare has been suspended over romantic pictures with another woman.

Father Taurai Kachembere is married and has since been suspended over the circulating pictures.

Allegations are that he is now living with Thandeka Sithole, the woman he appears with, in the leaked pictures.

There are claims that the two even have a bouncing baby boy.

He is married to Simbisai Dongo Kachembere.
Their wedding took place on July 2, 2011, in Chinhoyi.
The church suspended him pending an investigation.
Sources within the church said this is not the first time the man of the cloth has been suspended over infidelity issues.
Bishop Farai Mutamiri said it was against the church’s policy to comment over pending issues.
“I am so sorry it is against our policy to discuss pending clergy/staff matters. Kind regards,” he said.
Contacted for comment, Father Kachembere reacted angrily.
“I have seen the pictures and you are not the first one to ask about the pictures.
“But if the sources are from the church, why can’t they go through the structures?
“Is that how credible journalism is all about?
“What do you benefit from pestering people over their pictures?
“If you get your picture with someone, does it mean it’s what is happening there.

Broke Zanu PF Hikes Membership Fees

By-Zanu PF has hiked membership fees by 300%.

The ruling party increased the membership fee from US$1 to US$3, much to the annoyance of some party members.

The membership cards are renewed annually.

Zanu PF national political commissar Mike Bimha, Tuesday confirmed the new fees. He told NewsDay:

I have never heard any complaint about our membership cards; they are actually in high demand. Those raising the complaints are malicious people. I am even receiving phone calls from people who are demanding our cards. What we are charging is just the cost of the material we are using to produce the cards. They cannot just come from nowhere.

Why would anyone refuse such a simple offer to pay just US$3 for the entire year? We can’t fundraise with that money — those are malicious allegations.

A senior Zanu PF party member said following complaints from some party members, they approached the commissariat department to seek a downward review of the membership fee, according to NewsDay.

The unnamed official said party members believe that the card is too expensive, particularly for those who need to travel to acquire the card.

Meanwhile, Bimha told NewsDay that preparations for the Zanu PF elective congress set for this October were at an advanced stage.

Zanu PF Secretary for Administration confirmed the conferment of the status.

Mutiwazuka’s son, who is Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Turkey, Alfred Mutiwazuka told state media last night that he was “grateful for the recognition” given to his father.
He also confirmed that the burial will take place today.

Rodwell Dhlakama Finds New Club In SA

South African National First Division side, Black Leopards, has appointed Rodwell Dhlakama as its new coach.

The Zimbabwean gaffer has replaced Joel Masutha, who was suspended from his post last week following a string of poor results.

Masutha was instructed to down tools alongside his assistant Morgan Shivambu and goalkeeper coach Sam Banda.

Dhlakama signed a three year contract with Leopards after dumping ZPC Kariba where he had a month left to his contract.

“For me, this is a step forward given the profile of the league. Taking a team which is at the bottom of the log and trying to improve its status is a big challenge. So that’s where I will be recognized on whether I am a good coach or not.

“I want to make sure that the team makes a huge statement in the league. Where they are sitting now they are not at the right place so I am trying to make sure that I remove this team and take them to their rightful position,” the Zimbabwean gaffer was quoted as saying on FarPost.co.za.

Dhlakama’s immediate task is to take the Leopards out of the relegation zone but will have to wait until he gets his work permit.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Facts About Depression, Anxiety

New global WHO guidelines on mental health at work are reinforced by practical strategies outlined in a joint WHO/ILO policy brief.

WHO and the International Labour Organization (ILO) have called for concrete actions to address mental health concerns in the working population.

An estimated 12 billion workdays are lost annually due to depression and anxiety costing the global economy nearly US$ 1 trillion. Two new publications which aim to address this issue are published today – WHO Guidelines on mental health at work and a derivative WHO/ILO policy brief.

WHO’s global guidelines on mental health at work recommend actions to tackle risks to mental health such as heavy workloads, negative behaviours, and other factors that create distress at work. For the first time WHO recommends manager training, to build their capacity to prevent stressful work environments and respond to workers in distress.

WHO’s World Mental Health Report, published in June 2022, showed that of one billion people living with a mental disorder in 2019, 15% of working-age adults experienced a mental disorder. Work amplifies wider societal issues that negatively affect mental health, including discrimination and inequality. Bullying and psychological violence (also known as “mobbing”) is a key complaint of workplace harassment that has a negative impact on mental health. Yet discussing or disclosing mental health remains a taboo in work settings globally.

The guidelines also recommend better ways to accommodate the needs of workers with mental health conditions, propose interventions that support their return to work and, for those with severe mental health conditions, provide interventions that facilitate entry into paid employment. Importantly, the guidelines call for interventions aimed at the protection of health, humanitarian, and emergency workers.

“It’s time to focus on the detrimental effect work can have on our mental health,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “The well-being of the individual is reason enough to act, but poor mental health can also have a debilitating impact on a person’s performance and productivity. These new guidelines can help prevent negative work situations and cultures and offer much-needed mental health protection and support for working people.”

A separate WHO/ILO policy brief explains the WHO guidelines in terms of practical strategies for governments, employers and workers, and their organizations, in the public and private sectors. The aim is to support the prevention of mental health risks, protect and promote mental health at work, and support those with mental health conditions, so they can participate and thrive in the world of work. Investment and leadership will be critical to the implementation of the strategies.

“As people spend a large proportion of their lives in work – a safe and healthy working environment is critical. We need to invest to build a culture of prevention around mental health at work, reshape the work environment to stop stigma and social exclusion, and ensure employees with mental health conditions feel protected and supported,” said, Guy Ryder, ILO Director-General.

The ILO Occupational Safety and Health Convention (No. 155) and Recommendation (No. 164) provides legal frameworks to protect the health and safety of workers. However, the WHO Mental Health Atlas found that only 35% of countries reported having national programmes for work-related mental health promotion and prevention.

COVID-19 triggered a 25% increase in general anxiety and depression worldwide, exposing how unprepared governments were for its impact on mental health, and revealing a chronic global shortage of mental health resources. In 2020, governments worldwide spent an average of just 2% of health budgets on mental health, with lower-middle income countries investing less than 1%.

Biti Slams Zanu PF Regime For Robbing Miners
