Madhuku Challenges Suspension Of Teachers

Tinashe Sambiri|Constitutional law expert, Lovemore Madhuku has said the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education does not have the mandate to suspend teachers.

Madhuku argues teachers are employed by the Public Service Commission and they cannot be suspended by a Government Minister.

“Teachers cannot be suspended from work by a Govt Minister: they are employed by the PSC. Even the PSC itself has no power whatsoever to effect a blanket and mass suspension. The purported suspensions are unacceptable. Govt must dialogue with teachers’ unions and address issues,” argued Madhuku.

Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe,ARTUZ described the “suspension” of educators as unconstitutional.

“We advise citizens to disregard this unconstitutional move. All those behind this purported suspension have withdrawn themselves from the law and have ceased to be legally recognized as education officials. Meanwhile let’s unite to #SaveOurEducationZw

Show us where your own sons and daughters are learning. If they are not in our schools so all gvt officials are Suspended from making decisions for public education for 3 months.”

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe member Andrew Munguri said:
“Now that they have suspended us for demanding US$ salaries, I have no option except to use the next three months mobilising and strategizing ways to improve the education situation in our beloved motherland.
one thing for sure is, their children do not learn in public schools which they are destroying.
it is us, the poor, whose children are at the receiving end.
I’m getting down, busy at grassroots.
aluta continua!”

6 ShopKeepers Arrested For Murder

Police in Mutawata, Mashonaland East province, have arrested six businessmen in Pfungwe who fatally assaulted a man who went berserk destroying their shops.

The man, who police only identified as Jay Jay, died a few metres from the shopping centre.

The suspects are Tatenda Muswere, Fanuel Mutata, Eshwert Kagwambo, Nyepanai Nyauyanga, Elisha Hwenje and one Tinashe.

Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachii confirmed the murder.

“Six suspects were arrested in connection with a murder case in Pfungwe. We urge the public to desist from taking the law into their hands,” he said.

It is reported that on February 5, at around 4am, at Mutata business centre, Muswere was awakened by a large bang on his shop door only to realise that Jay Jay was hitting it using a metal object.

Jay Jay told Muswere that he had been sent to destroy the shops.

The deceased also threatened to kill Muswere and his wife who then shouted for help.

Other shop owners woke up as Jay Jay moved from shop to shop breaking doors and window panes.

The six managed to overpower the now-deceased before tying his hands with a rope.

They assaulted him using switches for close to two hours. He staggered and collapsed a few metres away from the business centre.

Police attended the scene and conveyed the body to Mutawatawa Hospital for post-mortem. -Newsday

Teachers Unmoved By Government Threats

Tinashe Sambiri|Teachers are unmoved by government’s dismissal of educators for protesting at poor living conditions.

On Thursday Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration announced the suspension of teachers for failing to report for duty.

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe says government should concentrate on finding a lasting solution to the impasse.

“This is the Hon Minister of Primary and Secondary Education in Zimbabwe. She has just unilaterally suspended teachers, and by extension, education in public schools. We all ask her, which public schools do your children go to? Are their teachers also paid RTGS$20k?”

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe Secretary General Raymond Majongwe argued:
“In 2002, 629 members of PTUZ were unilaterally suspended by TK Tsodzo ( then Perm Sec) Sheila Jarvis represented us and they were all reinstated. This is nothing new. The law is very clear. There is something called due process. What happened to dialogue Cde Moyo promised?”

Mavaza: Zim Police To Remain Professional During Elections

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | Zimbabwe is getting ready to have by elections on the 26th March 2022. Many people are very anxious. The opposition is keen to have the elections because they hope to restore themselves back to where they were in 2018. So these by-elections are game changers.

The newly named CCC wishes to see how well received they have been so they wish to gauge the response of the electorate during these elections. On the same hand ZANU PF has nothing really to lose in these elections. Even if all the seats on offer are to go this does not alter the majority in parliament.

However ZANU PF intends to measure its support base in the opposition strongholds.

While politicians angle their muscles around each other the Police gets the brunt of both the losers and the winners.
The police are deploying officers in ways that promote a safe and free democratic election. Police officers in the field do also consider several suggestions to help guide their discretionary activities. Despite their efforts the police will always be blamed because it is difficult to make everyone happy.

The police have the discretion which can be used to form the basis of procedures or directives on Election Day.

The Police work does not contradict or take precedence over local laws, or existing agency procedures. If any one breaches the law he will be arrested regardless of his political inclination.
The Police are not there to protect parties but to protect Zimbabweans.
Unfortunately politicians make the work of the police difficult. Some politicians would want to patronise the police. Some genuinely believe that the control the police.

The worst of all are the ones who believe that they are victims and always appendix a bias tag on the police.

Police Officers will likely be required to make critical decisions on Election Day that may alter or shape voters’ experiences at the polls and their perceptions of the fairness of the process. It is how the police handle the elections which gives the outside world an opinion on our elections. Free and fairness is found in the way the police executed their duties. The zimbabwe Republic Police always fulfil their duties while remaining nonpartisan and impartial in all election times.
The opposition enters in the elections with one aim. To find ways of blaming the incumbent.

The police are not there to baby sit anyone. They are there for the reason to monitor polling locations as directed from an unobtrusive distance or location unless an exigency requires a direct response.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police do not participate in the election process while on-duty, even if requested assist in translation, fill out ballot, move voting machine. Whatever happens at a polling station is nothing to do with police. Police are there to maintain law and order.
If assigned to the interior of polling location by a supervisor or as a legal requirement: they
Position themselves unobtrusively to the voting public so as to avoid the perception of monitoring or assessing the voting process.
If assigned to a post outside of polling location, the police monitor the area in vicinity of polling location from a reasonable distance.
The accusations by the opposition that the Police are biased is unfounded and deeply depressing. Considering the risk the police take in maintaining peace it is disingenuous of the opposition to push the police on the side of the ruling party.
The police besides keeping peace do observe for any illegal activity electioneering voter intimidation and electoral fraud.

The poling station is not a place to lecture to the police. The police are cognisant of permitted and un-permitted gatherings; they notify and consult with chain of command as necessary and act as advised. If a party is found on the side of illegality they must not cry foul.
Despite being accused of bias the Zimbabwe Republic Police remain alert and ready to respond impartially, when needed.
Protecting and serving all of Zimbabwe’s voters on Election Day is the priority of the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
It is common cause that the ZRP emphasise the role of maintaining both the physical safety and voting rights of individuals in a fair and impartial manner.
The police do liaise with election officials about any conditions that arise, including any unavailability of voting machines, ballots, etc., that could cause protest, unrest, or allegations of fraud. This is done to maintain peace.
Officers have the duty to protect the public from threats to their safety, but the enforcement of minor offenses near polling locations may be perceived as exerting a chilling effect on voting. Being that as it may people should know that they will be arrested if they break the law near the polling stations.
Averting critical incidents is the primary goal of the police during an election, followed by responding to incidents in a way that limits their severity and restores the public’s faith in the democratic process. Democracy – is a system of government by the whole population, ordinarily through elected representatives, and in which all citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. In a democracy the elected representatives of the people derive their power and mandate from the people.
So the ZRP take elections seriously and do not take sides during and after elections.

ZRP always oversees free, fair and regular elections, respect for the rule of law, separation of powers, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, equality and non-discrimination.

Miners Defend Teachers

National Mine Workers’ Union of Zimbabwe (NMWUZ) President Mr Kurebwa Javangwe Nomboka has urged parents to rally behind striking teachers by not sending their children to school this first schooling term of 2022.

Nomboka said it was morally right to take a diplomatic stance in standing with teachers’ Unions that have been fighting for wage adjustment above PDL – Poverty Datum Line.

Teachers have been calling upon the government to restore their 2018 salaries (US$540) but the employer has not yet paid heed to the call saying it was incapacitated to give them what they are requesting.

The government Thursday suspended striking teachers for three months without pay. Nomboka believes teachers need parents’ support. He said:

I urge parents right across the country of Zimbabwe to support teachers’ quest for decent work and they can do that by refusing to send their kids to school this first term until employers resolve the demands for salary adjustment and as a union representing mine workers nationwide we’re herein standing in solidarity with teachers in downing tools.

All workers Unions in Zimbabwe should rally behind teachers and that as I have above must involve the contribution of parents as the improvements of teachers’ working conditions will simultaneously improve on the quality of education and affordability in terms of fees and other amenities.

He said 2022 was the year of workers’ rights, and decent work for the worker.

Meanwhile, NMWUZ President has hinted that employers meet the standing demands of mineworkers or risk facing unending protests and strikes in 2022.

Mineworkers are demanding their employers to give them COVID-19 monthly allowance and salaries in USD – United States dollars that are above PDL. – Pindula News

Gunman, Police Officer Nabbed For Cable Theft

By-A member of the Zimbabwe National Army, a police constable, and two civilians have been hauled before the courts on allegations of stealing Zesa cables around Odzi since 2019, causing incessant blackouts and affecting agricultural production in the farming area.

On countless occasions, the suspects allegedly cut electricity cables during the night and later sold the loot to the police officer who would then offload the cables on the black market at a higher price.

The implicated cop allegedly supplied his accomplices with the bolt cutters to increase stealing efficiency, which made it easy to cut the electricity cables from the main grid.

The cop, Jacob Mazungunye (29) who is stationed at ZRP Sakubva; Munyaradzi Nyamukungwa (37), a soldier with ZNA 3 Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Company; Frank Nyahando (23) of Tenderere, Sakubva, and Peter Zuze (36) of Area 14 in Dangamvura were charged with contravening Section 60A (3) (b) of the Electricity Amendment Act, Chapter 13:19. Detectives are looking for the fifth suspect who disappeared following the arrest of his accomplices.
The arrested suspects were brought to court separately on different dates.
They appeared before Mutare magistrates, Mr Langton Carter and Ms Prisca Manhibi and were remanded in custody.
Allegations were that on December 22, Nyahando and his accomplices Zuze and Nyamukungwa hatched a plan to vandalise and steal ZETDC transformer windings at Bingaguru Farm in Penhalonga.
They were using a vehicle that was being driven by Nyamukungwa.
Armed with various spanners, mattock, a bolt cutter and a shovel, the suspects went to the farm and cut two cables which were connecting the transformer to the meter box and the supply line.
They hid the cables in the bush. Thereafter, they went on to vandalise the transformer. However, this alerted a security guard who raised alarm.
The accused persons ran away with the loot.
The court heard that after some searches around the crime scene, the security guard discovered that one of the suspects had left behind a pair of black sandals.
A report was made to the police who swiftly reacted and made follow ups before arresting Nyahando who was now walking on foot.
Upon interrogation, he confessed stealing the cables together with his accomplices who had ran away.
He told the cops that at times they would carry out the heists with Mazungunye and a ZETDC employee who drives a company lorry.
As investigations intensified, the suspect led the cops to Kondozi Farm where he voluntarily made positive indications confirming the theft of armoured copper cables at the farm in 2019.
He also led detectives to Greencroft Farm in Chigodora and confessed that he stole copper cables there in 2020.
Upon further interrogation, he told the cops that he always supplied the loot to Mazungunye.
On December 28, Zuze was arrested at his house.
A search was conducted and the cops recovered a bolt cutter, catapult, rubber gloves, two spanners, a hacksaw and a machete which were allegedly used to commit the crimes.
He told the cops that sometime in June 2019, he met Mazungunye at Green Market and they agreed to work together to steal copper cables.
In October 2019, Zuze teamed up with Nyahando and went to Gumbo Farm in Odzi where they cut and stole copper cables.
They phoned Mazungunye and met him at Makoni Turn-off in Riverside. He bought the copper cables for US$60.
The suspects continued doing this and the cop would always turn up and buy the loot.
Cables valued at $500 000 were stolen by the suspects.

Businessman Bashes Wife Over Pregnancy Test Kit

By-A Beitbridge businessman, Jonathan Madhuku (29), was arrested for assaulting his wife after he found a pregnancy test kit on their matrimonial bed.

Madhuku appeared before Magistrate Vavariro Gabi for assaulting his wife Vivian Rwasunda.

He was sentenced to 20 months in jail, but he will serve an effective 16 months after the magistrate suspended four months of the sentence if he doesn’t commit a similar offence within the next five years.

Madhuku has since engaged the services of Patrick Tererai of Tereral Legal Practice to appeal against the sentence.

The State represented by Tawanda Chigavazira said on 5 November at around 9:35 pm, the complainant had a misunderstanding with the accused over the issue of marrying a second wife.

The State further alleged that Madhuku got angry and assaulted his wife with open hands on the face and she sustained injuries.

In his defence, Madhuku told the court that he reacted the way he did because he was provoked by his wife.

Zanu PF Throws Mutodi Under The Bus

By- Energy Mutodi’s appeal to remain in Zanu PF Masvingo Province Coordinating Committee (PCC) in line with the December 2021 provincial elections results have been thrown out.

Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology principal, Munyaradzi Machacha dismissed Mutodi’s appeal on the grounds that he still sits on the Mash East (PCC).

Mutodi is an MP for Goromonzi West in Mash East. The appeal was dismissed during a party a PCC meeting in Masvingo on Sunday.
The Mirror also attended the PCC.
It is understood that the controversial Mutodi who has been in the courts on many occasions over corruption scandals now wants to shift to Masvingo his home area where he is eyeing Bikita South constituency.

Mutodi who got 583 votes during the December elections thrashed the incumbent Bikita South legislator, Josiah Sithole by almost 200 votes.
The new PCC chairman for Masvingo is Rabison Mavhenyengwa.
“Your appeal cannot be accepted because by virtue of being a Goromonzi West legislator you automatically sit in the Mash East PCC. So until you renounce you position in Mash East; the party constitution does not allow you to sit in two PCCs. At the moment your case does not hold water and is automatically dismissed on that technicality,” said Machacha.

PSL Blasts ZIFA Board

The Premier Soccer League has broken its silence on the suspension of the league’s officials by the Zifa board.

The Felton Kamambo-led executive announced sanctions against PSL chairman Farai Jere, chief executive officer Kenny Ndebele and the club chairmen of Highlanders, Dynamos and Manica Diamonds.

The accused faced charges of signing a petition calling for an Emergency General Meeting which FIFA blocked.

The members wanted to raise a motion to dissolve the Zifa board.

In a statement, the PSL said the sanctions against its officials are meant to bring division within the league.

“The Premier Soccer League has noted with concern that some of the members of the suspended ZIFA Executive Committee have sent correspondence purportedly suspending the leaders of Caps United FC, Dynamos FC, Highlanders FC and Manica Diamonds FC together with the PSL Chief Executive Officer, Mr Kennedy Ndebele, ” reads the statement.

“The Premier Soccer League condemns this shocking behaviour that is tantamount to vindictive and intimidatory tactics by the three suspended Executive Committee members.

“It is surprising that despite being a member of the suspended EXCO, the PSL Chairman, Mr Farai Jere was not invited to this so called Board meeting which effected these suspensions.

“We would like to categorically state that an attempt to divide the Premier Soccer League family will not be tolerated.”

The statement continues: “It is on record that the ZIFA Executive Committee and the ZIFA Chief Executive Officer were suspended by the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) on 16 November 2021 and 27 November 2020 respectively. The suspensions of the said PSL officials are therefore illegal and of no force and effect.

“The PSL Governors unanimously agreed to petition the revocation of the mandate to Executive Committee Members as provided in the ZIFA Statutes after observing a number of irregularities, these being poor governance, lack of transparency and failing to respect the Judicial bodies’ decisions among a plethora of other issues.

“We stand by our suspended PSL board members and Chief Executive Officer.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Chaos As Small-House-Son Pops Out Of SA, Accuses Zim Businessman’s Daughter of Forging Own Dad’s Marriage Certificate

By Dorrothy Moyo | In a disturbing human rights volation, there was chaos when the daughter of the late Edward Nyanyiwa also known as Eddies Pfugari was forced to languish in a police cell for a second night, after being accused by a stepbrother of forging her father and mother’s marriage 1960s certificate.

Small House son, Edward junior, after discovering his “Dad”

The small house son, recently popped out of South Africa and started wrestling the late businessman’s estate from the rightful wife married in the early 1960s, Mildred.

The prominent businessman Mr Pfugari and his wife Mildred had been married for over 40 years before her untimely death. He died several years after her.
Mrs Nyanyiwa’s estate was registered while her husband was alive and was in the process of being finalised at the time of his death.

So why did the stepson wait until both husband and wife had died before coming in to question the marriage?

POLICE OUTLINE:

The police outline reads as follows: The complainant is Edward Nyanyiwa a male adult and a businessman who owns several companies in Zimbabwe. He is son to the late Edward Nyanyiwa (Senior) who died in 2019 and owned several companies including E Pfugari Properties Pvt Limited and Eddie’s Pfugari Pvt Limited. The late Edward Nyanyiwa (Senior) had a polygamous marriage and had five wives including Mildred Nyanyiwa who is the accused’s late mother.

The accused is a female adult aged 54 residing at 38 Sandringham Drive Alexandra Park, Harare and biological daughter to the late Mildred Nyanyiwa who died in 2005. At the time of her death, Mildred Nyanyiwa was on separation with the late Edward Nyanyiwa (Senior). The accused is a step sister to the complainant.
Sometime in March 1980, the late Edward Nyanyiwa registered Eddie Pfugari Pvt Limited with the accused’s mother and they were both directors. Mildred Nyanyiwa later on resigned from the directorship on 30th day of July 1989.
Following the passing on of Mildred Nyanyiwa the accused registered her estate in 2015 under DR 2895/15 and the late Edward Nyanyiwa was still alive by then. The late Edward Nyanyiwa (Snr) was summoned to an edict meeting to chose the executor for the late Mildred Nyanyiwa’s estate and he contested the issue citing that the deceased had neither properties not anything that qualified to be registered as such.
Edward Nyanyiwa (Snr) later on passed away on the 10th day of February 2019 and after his death, an executor was appointed by Master of High Court under DR471/19.
During the period extending from April 2019 to October 2019, the accused tendered fake copies of a marriage certificate between Mildred and Edward Nyanyiwa to Mr Mufara, the legal practitioner with Nyika Kanengoni and Partners legal Practitioners for administration of the late Edward Nyanyiwa’s estate. When the accused tendered the documents, she knew very well that they were fake.
As a result, the legal practitioner tendered the documents to the Master of High Court for administration of estate.
Complainant later discovered the offence and reported the matter to the police.
Investigations carried out were at United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) Church in Kezi where the marriage certificate was purported to have been issued and the records established that the certificate was fake.
Four samples of signatures of W.K Dube was purported to have been Marriage officer was recovered and referred to Questioned Documents Examiner for examination and it was concluded that the documents were not similar and therefore not consistent with the standard signatures of W.K Dube the marriage officer and stated that the questioned signatures were consistent with forgery.

Minister Has No Mandate To Suspend Teachers- Madhuku

Biti Tears Into Mthuli Ncube

By A Correspondent- Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti has told the government to stop promising houses and cars to teachers and pay them decent United States dollar-based salaries.

Teachers have been on a strike citing incapacitation since the reopening of schools for the first term on Monday, demanding at a monthly salary of at least US$540.

Biti said the ruling party cannot fool anyone and it must stop making fake promises.

Government announced a salary increase of 20% backdated to January 2022 and a US$100 Covid-19 allowance effective March.

“Effectively it is US$20,” Biti said in the exclusive interview beamed live on NewZim TV Thursday afternoon, sponsored by the Diaspora Insurance Company.

“This is smokescreen economics, and they are hoping that we have a good agricultural season where they can monetise this and they are hoping that they can pull through because they need a year to the next election,” he said.

“They cannot fool anyone, every civil servant knows this is not a salary increase, the effective increase is 5 000 bond which is US$20, so they are not fooling anyone, not even their own wives,” Biti said.

He added: “They need to be given a minimum of US$500 per months, it is that simple, do not promise them houses, do not promise them cars, give them the basic wage, give them a strong functional economy, give them tools to work with, if they are teachers give them classrooms, chalks and proper blackboards.

“If they are doctors give them their frontline workers tools to work with, give them a decent salary, it is a crime that you go to a public hospital like Parirenyatwa and the government is now delegating to patients and their relatives to look after people that are inside.”

Zanu PF Shuts The Door On Energy Mutodi

By A Correspondent- Former Deputy Information Minister, Energy Mutodi’s appeal to remain in the ZANU PF Masvingo Province Coordinating Committee (PCC) in line with the December 2021 provincial elections results has been rejected.

Mutodi’s appeal was dismissed on the grounds that he still sits on the Mashonaland East PCC. Mutodi is the MP for Goromonzi West in Mash East.

The appeal was dismissed during a PCC meeting in Masvingo on Sunday. In dismissing the appeal, Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology principal, Munyaradzi Machacha said:

Your appeal cannot be accepted because by virtue of being a Goromonzi West legislator you automatically sit in the Mash East PCC.

So until you renounce your position in Mash East; the party constitution does not allow you to sit in two PCCs.

At the moment your case does not hold water and is automatically dismissed on that technicality.

Mutodi is reportedly planning to move from Mash East to Masvingo his home area where he is eyeing Bikita South constituency.

Mutodi got 583 votes during the December elections beating the incumbent Bikita South legislator, Josiah Sithole, by almost 200 votes.

The new ZANU PF provincial chairperson for Masvingo Province is Rabison Mavhenyengwa.

Chiyangwa In Trouble For Failing To Pay Maintenance For SA Based Children

Zanu-PF central committee member Philip Chiyangwa has been taken to court for failing to pay maintenance and school fees for the two children he had with ex-wife Pamela Rusere.

The couple’s children have, according to court papers, been barred from entering school premises in South Africa over fees arrears.

In her application for correction and variation of the maintenance order under case number HC7099, Rusere said Chiyangwa had ignored messages informing him that the children’s fees were due after schools in the neighbouring country opened on January 12.

“The minor children have now been dismissed from school as the grace period has lapsed and, therefore, are not attending school and this is taking a toll on them and affecting them psychologically as the dismissal is embarrassing for them and interfering with their right to education which is a constitutionally entrenched right,” Rusere submitted.

“The children are suffering irreparable harm and prejudice, each day that they are not in school as they will not have a chance to catch up on any class that they have missed.”

Chiyangwa asked the court for variation of his $40 000 maintenance to $8 000, which was granted in default.

Rusere said Chiyangwa was refusing to pay maintenance and school fees for the minor children.

Rusere is challenging the variation saying Chiyangwa’s lawyer, Itayi Ndudzo, misled the clerk of court into believing that the payment of maintenance was stayed by the High Court.

“Chiyangwa is now using the new order for stay as a basis of his defence that he cannot be asked to pay maintenance because such an order has been stayed, thus absolving him of any responsibilities pending the determination of his application for rescission, which I must add, he is not interested to pursue as at the date of this application he has not filed an answering affidavit to a notice of opposition served on him on December 15, 2021 to allow the matter to be finalised,” she
submitted.

She is seeking an order compelling Chiyangwa to continue paying the $40 000 monthly maintenance pending the variation appeal.

“An order for maintenance may not be stayed completely as the interests of minor children are paramount and must not be prejudiced,” Rusere said.

Inmates Right To Vote Appeal: Judge Reserves Ruling

HIGH Court judge Justice Munamato Mutevedzi yesterday reserved judgment in an application seeking voting rights for prisoners during elections, saying all parties involved in the matter would be notified when the judgment is ready.

The applicants in the matter, Yvonne Musarurwa, Tungamirai Madzokere and Last Maengahama were prisoners when they filed the application, but have since been released.

Through their lawyer Tererai Mafukidze of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), the ex-prisoners were demanding that the High Court must issue an order compelling Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi, Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba and Zec to register prisoners on the voters’ roll and facilitate their voting in the country’s elections.

The applicants argued that for the period they were in detention, Zec never carried out any voter education campaigns, including voter registration or enabled prisoners to vote during general elections and by-elections.

The prisoners assert that they have the right to vote in elections and referendums as enshrined in section 67(3)(a) of the Constitution regardless of their status.

Section 67(3)(a) stipulates political rights and states that: “Every Zimbabwean citizen who is of, or over 18 years of age, has the right to vote in all elections and referendums to which this Constitution or any other law applies, and to do so in secret.”

Binga Residents Disconnected

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) has disconnected water to a residential area in Binga, Matabeleland North province, commonly known as Emasotsheni/ Soldiers section over a $4,8 million debt.

Last year, Zinwa cut off supplies to the same camp over a $1,55 million debt, leaving the residents without water for more than four months.

Emasotsheni/Soldiers section deputy chairperson Richard Muleya said water supplies were cut on January 28. The area is called the Emasotsheni/Soldiers section because of the many former and serving members of the army staying there.

“Zinwa has closed water again for the residents. They closed the bulk water meter supply, but initially we had agreed that Zinwa would close the meters only for those who were owing, not everyone,” Muleya said.

“We were advised that we owe Zinwa $4,8 million and we asked them where this amount was coming from. They could not tell us exactly where that amount came from.”

Muleya said they were yet to have a meeting with Zinwa over the issue.

Zinwa spokesperson Marjorie Munyonga said she would respond when she got full information.

Zinwa last year refused to restore water supplies to Binga Rural District Council until the local authority paid at least $300 000 of its $1,5 million debt.

Recently the residents accused the council of failing to provide water, and appealed to Zinwa to take over water provision in the town.

Residents are now forced to fetch the precious liquid from the banks of Lake Kariba, risking crocodile attacks.

Binga centre is about three kilometres east of Lake Kariba and boasts a number of tourist attractions, including the hotsprings, wildlife and the magnificent Binga beach.

STATEMENT: Minister Has no Power to Suspend Teachers

Revolutionary greetings incapacitated teachers in quandary. Our incapacitation has reached another level of intimidation by the line Ministry in an attempt to force us to borrow in order to go to work. That process is unpalatable and we urge the Ministry to assist teachers to lobby both PSC and Finance Minister to capacitate teachers by paying US$540.

The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education has no power to suspend Teachers. In October 2002, the then Minister of Education T.K. Tsodzo suspended 629 Ptuz aligned teachers in Harare due to a Union led strike. The courts ruled that the Minister had no locus standi to suspend teachers. All the 629 teachers were reinstated, but of course after some inconvenience of going for some months on half salary and food hampers that the Union could afford then. So the current Minister is walking along the defective path that already has a precedent ruling.

Even the Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare can not blanketly suspend teachers. It can only do that by writing to individual teachers. At any rate as Ptuz we have written to PSC notifying them about the incapacitation of teachers and copied the communique to our line ministry. All what Minister of Education could have done is to approach Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare to raise a show cause order giving teachers an order to report for work within a specified period. Even that would only happen for teachers on industrial action or strike. Teachers are currently not on strike but are incapacitated and the only way to address this is to capacitate teachers. We encourage the Minister to respect the law of the land and not to make glaring legal errors and thereby creating a legal lacuna.

What offence have teachers really committed? Is it an offence to remind an employer that has unilaterally reduced teachers’ salaries to restore the US$540? As Ptuz we are ready to take the legal route once any of our members receives a suspension letter. It is sad that instead of adopting a more considerate approach permeable to reason and facts the Ministry officials and gvt have decided to use defective command and control tactics that have no traction. That decision is tantamount to closing schools as more than 135000 teachers out of 14000 are incapacitated. One wonders whether this is what she calls open door policy when her door is closed. Is it because she is surrounded by criminals, we wonder?

We urge our members to remain calm but to get in touch with nearest Union leaders once you receive a suspension letter. We urge heads of schools that the incapacitation struggle is an inclusive struggle that also affect school heads. Never be abused by a system that has also incapacitated you. As Ptuz we will never accept the taking of labour laws to the Colonial Master and Servant Act. We certainly can not move the clock back to the Rhodesian Front, 42 years after independence. We will defend the liberation legacy in terms of defending fair labour practice and monumental justice.

We remain ready for meaningful dialogue as Teacher Union leaders, and urge all and sundry to make professional decisions coloured by educational taxonomy as opposed to emotional and suicidal decisions.

Prof Madhuku Dismisses Teachers’ Dismissal

By A Correspondent- Opposition politician and top Harare lawyer, Professor Lovemore Madhuku, has dismissed as illegal, the decision by government to suspend striking teachers.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Evelyn Ndlovu announced the suspension  in a statement Thursday.

“The ministry of Primary and Secondary Education would like to inform the Nation and its valued stakeholders that all officials within the Ministry who absented themselves from duty since the official opening of schools on 7 February 2022 have been suspended without pay forthwith, for a period of three months.

“During this period of suspension, members are not to hinder or interfere with any investigation or evidence relating to the alleged misconduct,” Ndlovu wrote.

However, Professor Madhuku, a labour law specialist, said the Minister did not have the power to suspend teachers because they are employed by the Public Service Commission (PSC).

“Teachers cannot be suspended from work by a Govt Minister: they are employed by the PSC,” he said on Twitter.

“Even the PSC itself has no power whatsoever to effect a blanket and mass suspension. The purported suspensions are unacceptable. Govt must dialogue with teachers’ unions and address issues.”

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe Secretary General Raymond Majongwe added, “In 2002, 629 members of PTUZ were unilaterally suspended by TK Tsodzo ( then Perm Sec) Sheila Jarvis represented us and they were all reinstated.

“This is nothing new. The law is very clear. There is something called due process. What happened to dialogue Cde Moyo promised?”

Some teachers decided to stay at home as schools opened to protest salaries of about $100 a month. Unions are demanding that their pay be increased to about $500 per month.

In 2018, teachers earned the equivalent of about $540 a month but that amount has been eroded by years of inflation, currently estimated at 60%, and the devaluation of Zimbabwe’s currency.

In response, the government has offered a 20% pay increase, payment of part of the teachers’ salaries in U.S. dollars, and subsidies on the purchases of cars and houses. The government also threatened to cut the salaries of those not reporting for duty.

The offer has however been rejected by two of the three teachers’ unions.

Couple’s Sleepover Plan Ends With One Partner In Police Cells

Plans by a couple for a romantic sleepover at a city lodge in Masvingo turned ugly when the man ended up in police custody for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

Takunda Murevesi, (29), of Rhodhene suburb, was fined $8 000 or alternatively two months in prison by Masvingo magistrate Grace Tupiri after she convicted him of domestic violence.

Murevesi, who is a gold miner, pleaded guilty to the charges.

For the State, Tatenda Dzitiro told the court that Murevisi and his girlfriend, 24-year-old Melissa Kweza of Mucheke, booked a room for the night at Meemy Lodge in Rhodene on Monday.

Around 1am when Murevesi and Kweza were about to retire to bed for the night, a misunderstanding broke out and Murevesi started assaulting Kweza on the face and back with open hands and she cried out for help.

Meemy Lodge staff then contacted the police and Murevesi was subsequently arrested.

Kweza did not sustain any visible injuries and was not medically examined.

Murevesi told the court that the misunderstanding was sparked by something unusual that he had noticed on Kweza and inquired about.

In addition to the fine, Murevesi was sentenced to an additional two months that were conditionally suspended for five years.

Man Who Denied Paternity 27yrs Ago Demands Lobola

By A Correspondent- A woman from Bulawayo’s Magwegwe West suburb has applied for a peace order against a man who allegedly impregnated her 27 years ago but denied responsibility.

Liliyosa Dlamini said she gave birth to twins 27 years ago after a relationship with Calvin Chimuka.

She said after the birth of the twins, Chimuka forsook her and refused to support the children, claiming he was not their father.

Chimuka, however, has re-appeared, 27 years later, now that one of the children is getting married. He said he wants a share of the bride price.

Dlamini is against that and doesn’t want him to be part of the lobola negotiations. In her affidavit she said:

I’m applying for a peace order against my former lover Calvin Chimuka. 27 years ago I had two children with him.

And he denied being the father of the children and refused to pay for their upkeep. My father ended up staying with them at his rural home.

Now he wants to benefit from the bride price. I refused but he comes to my house and hurls insults at me and my family members.

He even branded my child and me whores.

Presiding magistrate Ulukile Ndlovu granted Dhlamini a peace order against Chimuka who did not attend the court session.

Chimuka was ordered not to verbally abuse Dhlamini and not to go to her home.-BMetro

“Only ED Can Authorise Exhumation Of Anna Machaya”: Police Officers Told

By A Correspondent- Police officers were on Thursday reportedly blocked from exhuming the body of child bride Anna Machaya, who died whilst giving birth at a Johanne Marange Apostolic sect shrine in Marange in July last year.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers were barred from accessing the shrine at Mafararikwa village.

Anna, who was 14, was illegally buried at the shrine in an apparent bid to conceal her death as the “marriage” and nature of her death had legal consequences for those involved.

The police officers were armed with an exhumation order to recover Anna’s remains as part of their investigations into her death.

Her husband, Hatirarami Momberume alias Evans Michael Momberume, who is in his late twenties, has been charged with her murder.

When contacted for a comment by ZimLive, ZRP national spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said he was out of office and did not have details of the incident. But an unnamed police officer told the publication:

The church’s leader Noah Taguta sent his devotees to tell the officers that they should bring authorisation from the president [Emmerson Mnangagwa].

He did not recognise the exhumation order signed by the district administrator. He runs the shrine as if it’s an embassy, he’s the law.

Taguta, who styles himself as a “high priest” of his church, receives senior government officials at his shrine from time to time.

Even President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been a visitor to the shrine and Taguta has spoken publicly of his support for the ZANU PF party.

Anna died on 16 July last year from excessive bleeding, hours after she gave birth at the shrine near Mutare.

Congregants buried her at the shrine without a burial order.

In January this year, Anna’s parents Edmore Machaya, 45, and his wife Shy Mabika, 36, were jailed for nine months each after being convicted on charges of defeating or obstructing the course of justice.

They were charged after they lied to police investigators that Anna’s name was Memory Machaya, to conceal the fact that she was a minor.

They also claimed that Anna was born on 2 January 1999, which would have made her 22 when she died.

Police however established that the deceased teenager’s name was Anna Machaya, and she was born on 5 July 2006.

That was after the police obtained a copy of the dead girl’s birth certificate from Wanganui High School where she was a student before she got married to Momberume.

Anna had been forced to drop out of school whilst doing Form 2 after falling pregnant and her parents married her off to Momberume.

Garden Boy Connives With Maid To Steal US$70k , R90k From Boss

A 30-year-old gardener who robbed his employer of US$70 000 and R90 000 appeared in court this Thursday.

Tinashe Ngirazi appeared before Harare magistrate Yeukai Dzuda on charges of unlawful entry into premises under aggravating circumstances after allegedly conniving with the maid to steal from their boss, Shadreck Zvarivadza.

It is alleged that Ngirazi, the maid, Taurai Shonhiwa and two others, who are still at large, broke into Zvarivadza’s bedroom and dug up an underground safe where they stole the money.

The money was part of a sum of US$75 000 and R121 000 that Zvarivadza had placed in his safe sometime in January 2020.

The court heard that the complainant only realised that his safe was tempered with and that the money was missing this year when he wanted to use the money.

Ngirazi was asked about the missing funds and confirmed that they stole the money together with Shonhiwa, shared the proceeds with Ngirazi, purchasing a vehicle which has since been recovered.

The pair was arrested after a report was made to the police.

Ngirazi was remanded in custody to this Friday for bail application, while Shonhiwa has since appeared in court on the same charges.

Meanwhile, Cleopas Kumire, who allegedly fatally assaulted a man whom he owed money, has appeared in court.

Kumire, who is facing murder charges, was remanded in custody to the 24th of this month and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

Allegations are that the now deceased approached the accused asking for the 60 United States dollars which he was owed.

The accused allegedly responded by striking the now deceased with a wooden plunk on the head and all over his body.

The court heard that the now deceased was left lying on the ground and was found dead on the same spot the following morning.

State Propaganda Exposed As Court Rejects ZBC Video In Mamombe Abduction Case

By -The State Thursday refused a ZBC video obtained by Joana Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbiris’ lawyers as part of the evidence in their ongoing application for referral of their matter to the Constitutional Court (ConCourt).

Through their lawyers, Mr Alec Muchadehama and Mr Jeremiah Bamu, the duo wanted the video aired on ZBCTv on September 9, 2020, to be part of their application.

The video was played on the national broadcaster with the intention to create the impression that the fearless female activists faked their abduction in May of the same year.

The two wanted their matter, in which they are accused of faking their abduction, to be referred to the ConCourt, arguing that several of their rights were violated by their arrest.

In their application, they said there was incessant and adverse media publicity aimed at swaying the court to convict them, and the video from ZBC would show the negative publicity they were subjected to.
The State objected to the production of the video because of want of procedure and doubts regarding the authenticity of the video.
It said it will not allow the production of the video unless Mamombe and Chimbiri take the person who produced it to testify in court and be subjected to cross-examination.
“We are strongly opposed to the tendering of the video whose creator is unknown.
“The State is opposed to its production for want of procedure,” said Mr Michael Reza, who appeared for the State.
Mr Reza argued that documents had to be certified to qualify for their production in court records and questioned how a flash disc (memory stick), which the opposition party members wanted to tender, could be certified.
“He brought a flash disc and say it is a certified copy. How can this be certified? Everyone knows processes of certification.
“How does this flash (disc) purportedly containing evidence of abduction be termed trade or business record.”
“He is inviting a procedure which is alien to this jurisdiction,” he said.
Mr Reza rubbished Mamombe and Chimbiri’s assertions that their rights were violated by “incessant and adverse” publicity aimed at swaying the court into convicting them saying the court deals with law not public opinion.
“In the magistracy, this is the highest court (Chief Magistrate) and I do not believe that the court would say because of what was aired on ZTV, I find you guilty.
“It deals with proper evidence adduced in the court, not statements by friends to each other. It is a court of record. The State is very strongly opposed to this piece of irrelevant and inadmissible content contaminating the court record. On all fronts, this application ought to fail,” he said.
Mr Tafara Chirambira, who appeared together with Mr Reza, buttressed the latter’s submissions saying the State disagreed with the video’s authenticity.
He said authenticity was one of the requirements before a document was admitted into the court’s record.
“There is procedural irregularities that my colleagues are asking the court to partake.
“We are not agreeing on authenticity. We do not know of the flash and its contents,” he said.
Mr Muchadehama said the production of the video related to the application and one of the reliefs sought was that accused were not likely to receive a fair trial because there had been incessant and adverse publicity “to influence the outcome of these proceedings”.
“The reason for the production of the video is to show that it was aired on ZTV. The video was aired on September 9, 2020,” he said.
Mr Muchadehama said the video was authentic since it was downloaded from the national broadcaster and by its corporate legal secretary.
“ZBC downloaded the video and put it on flash, it then qualifies to be produced,” he said.
Chief Magistrate Mrs Faith Mushure is expected to decide on whether the flash disc will be admitted into the record or not on February 16. Herald

Chiyangwa Fails To Pay School Fees; Children Kicked Of School

By-Zanu PF 2023 elections fundraising committee chairman and the party’s central committee member Philip Chiyangwa has failed to pay school fees for his two children in South Africa.

The once flamboyant Harare businessman has also been taken to court for failing to pay maintenance and school fees for the two children he had with ex-wife Pamela Rusere.

“Chiyangwa is now using the new order for stay as a basis of his defence that he cannot be asked to pay maintenance because such an order has been stayed, thus absolving him of any responsibilities pending the determination of his application for rescission, which I must add, he is not interested to pursue as at the date of this application he has not filed an answering affidavit to a notice of opposition served on him on December 15, 2021 to allow the matter to be finalised,” she submitted.
She is seeking an order compelling Chiyangwa to continue paying the $40 000 monthly maintenance pending the variation appeal.
“An order for maintenance may not be stayed completely as the interests of minor children are paramount and must not be prejudiced,” Rusere said.

Mutodi is an MP for Goromonzi West in Mash East. The appeal was dismissed during a party a PCC meeting in Masvingo on Sunday.

Mutodi who got 583 votes during the December elections thrashed the incumbent Bikita South legislator, Josiah Sithole by almost 200 votes.

Miners In Solidarity With Teachers

Mberengwa Chief Impregnates Neighbour’s Wife

Mberengwa – Chief Bvute born Andrew Bvute (67) of Mberengwa has impregnated the wife of a man who used to sell him sex enhancing tablets.

Biggy Munyesegwa (43) of Yorks Business Centre in Mberengwa discovered the pregnancy through messages in his wife’s phone on Saturday.

The Mirror is in possession of the messages.

Chief Bvute confirmed the allegations although he initially denied the story. He later said that the woman told him that she was single.

There are many complaints that Chief Bvute who stays 2km away from Yorks Business Centre goes out with married women. The Mirror is told that Munyesegwa had at the time of going to Press reported the issue to Mberengwa District Development Co-ordinator Vafios Hlavati and was referred to Chief Chizunze.

Munyesegwa told The Mirror this week that Chief Bvute was a regular client who bought sex enhancing tablets from him. When Munyesegwa is not at home, the tablets are sold by his wife Princess Musorowachena (30) and Munyesegwa therefore introduced his wife to the chief.

“I remember introducing my wife to the chief, telling her to respect the chief and never to disclose to anyone that he was buying sex tablets. The chief had to buy tablets in private,” said Munyesegwa.

Munyesegwa went to work at Sabi Mine in Zvishavane in September last year and he came back suddenly and found his wife with a phone that she secretly kept. He grabbed the phone and went through the messages and discovered love messages between the Chief and Musorowachena.

He was shocked to realise from the messages that his wife was even pregnant with the chief.

The messages between the chief and Musorowachena have gone viral in the villages.

“I am hurt and confused. I am asking the world to help me, I don’t know what to do. Bvute was my client who bought sex tablets from me. I introduced him to my wife so that he could get his orders from her whenever I am not there.

“I recall saying to her, this is our chief please ensure that he is given privacy when he buys tablets because he is a respected person in the community.

“I was away since September last year and when I came back I noticed my wife was having an affair with the chief and they communicated using a small secret phone [Kambudzi],” said Munyesegwa.

In one of the messages the wife said to the chief:

“I am pregnant are you going to take good care of the pregnancy till birth?”

The chief replied “ko wazogoita nhumbu sei uri pajongwe rako, (But why did you fall pregnant when you have a husband?”

“It was a mistake,” said the wife.

“Am appealing to the world for help, how can I deal with this matter.

“I suggest the unscrupulous chief should be punished because news coming around the community says the chief has a habit of falling in love with married woman,” narrated an embittered Munyesegwa.

Munyesegwa and Musorowachena have been married since 2013 and are blessed with two children.

Bvute initially said the story was false but when The Mirror told him that the messages to Musorowachena was coming from the same number that The Mirror had called him, he said the woman told him she wasn’t married.

“I didn’t know that the woman is married. She lied to me that she was single and we started dating. How could I date a married woman?” asked Bvute.https://masvingomirror.com

Man Deserts Own Daughter, Resurfaces 27 Year Later for Lobola

A woman from Magwegwe West suburb in Bulawayo has applied for a peace order against her former lover who is demanding lobola for a daughter he denied was his 27 years ago.

Liliyosa Dlamini said she gave birth to twins 27 years ago after a relationship with Calvin Chimuka. Dlamini said after the birth of the twins, her lover turned his back on her and claimed he was not the father of the two children.

He refused to pay for the upkeep of the children.

And he denied being the father of the children and refused to pay for their upkeep. My father ended up staying with them at his rural home.

Now he wants to benefit from bride price. I refused but he comes to my house and hurls insults at me and my family members.

He even branded my child and I whores.”

In fear of being humiliated Chimuka did not attend the court session and the presiding magistrate Ulukile Ndlovu granted Liliyosa a peace order against him. He was ordered not to verbally abuse her and not to go to her home. -B Metro

Mzembi Mocks Mnangagwa

By- Former Tourism Minister, Walter Mzembi said Zimbabwe was sliding back to 2009 during the Government of national unity era when then Finance and Economic Development Minister, Tendai Biti paid all civil servants US$100 as hyperinflation wreaked havoc.

Finance Minister,Mthuli Ncube recently announced monetary benefits for government workers.

Ncube announced a 20 per cent increase in the Zimbabwe Dollar salary component backdated to 1 January 2022 and a USD100, per month in the hard currency for every civil servant with effect from the 1st of March 2022.

He also said this will be done through the conversion of a corresponding Zimbabwe dollar salary amount into hard currency, bringing the foreign currency amount to USD175.

Ncube made the announcement amid protests by civil servants who are demanding that the Government restore their 2018 salaries when they earned about US$540.

In response to the announcement, Mzembi said the development was unacceptable:

Back to January 2009 GNU when we were all paid $100 by @BitiTendai , at least it worked. The cost of learning Government by @MthuliNcube has disrupted lives for four years, this is unacceptable. Learning expensively on the job to the detriment of lives!

The industrial actions that have been recurrent in the past two years come when the Government claims that it has been making surpluses which it says was channelled towards social amenities and infrastructure development.

Mamombe, Cecilia Case: Prosecutor Rejects ZBC Footage

The State yesterday objected to Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) members, Joana Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbiris’, application to tender into the court record a video they claimed to have obtained from the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) as part of evidence in their on-going application for referral of their matter to the Constitutional Court (ConCourt).

Understanding Cancer Screening

Cancer is one of the world’s leading causes of death, and its burden is growing. In 2021, the world crossed a sobering new threshold – an estimated 20 million people were diagnosed with cancer, and 10 million died. These numbers will continue to rise in the decades ahead. And yet all cancers can be treated, and many can be prevented or cured.

Care for cancer, however, like so many other diseases, reflects the inequalities and inequities of our world. The clearest distinction is between high- and low-income countries, with comprehensive treatment reportedly available in more than 90% of high-income countries but less than 15% of low-income countries.

Similarly, the survival of children diagnosed with cancer is more than 80% in high-income countries, and less than 30% in low- and middle-income countries. And breast cancer survival five years after diagnosis now exceeds 80% in most high-income countries, compared with 66% in India and just 40% in South Africa.

Furthermore, a recent WHO survey found that cancer services are covered by a country’s largest, government health financing scheme in an estimated 37% of low- and middle-income countries, compared to at least 78% of high-income countries. This means that a cancer diagnosis has the potential to push families into poverty, particularly in lower-income countries, an effect that has been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Closing the care gap

For all of these reasons, the theme for this year’s World Cancer Day is “closing the care gap”.

And fortunately, much is being done to bring quality cancer care to countries for which, up until now, it has been out of reach.

WHO’s efforts are focused on breast cancer, now the most common cancer; cervical cancer, that can be eliminated; and childhood cancer. The focus for each of these initiatives is low- and middle-income countries, where the biggest public health gains are to be made.

These integrated global cancer initiatives are being implemented by more than 200 partners around the world, including many development banks who have significantly increased their investments in cancer research, prevention and care.

National cancer centres: key to a comprehensive approach

Experience has shown the importance of national cancer centres in ensuring a comprehensive approach to cancer treatment. Bringing services for prevention, diagnosis, multidisciplinary treatment and supportive care together in one place makes it easier for patients to navigate services and leads to a greater concentration of expertise, and subsequently better health outcomes. Furthermore, cancer centres serve as training and research hubs, and in this way, help build country capacity and expertise.

Setting Up a Cancer Centre: a WHO-IAEA Framework, being released by the World Health Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency for World Cancer Day, proposes a framework for both establishing a cancer centre and strengthening the provision of services in existing centres. Intended for policy-makers, programme managers and health professionals, it provides details of the infrastructure, human resources and equipment required for essential services, taking into consideration local context and resources available.

Facilitating decisions on screening

Screening is another important element of comprehensive cancer prevention and control but decisions on what to include in a cancer programme require consideration of a number of complex factors. To support decision-making on such issues in countries, WHO has just released A short guide to cancer screening. Increase effectiveness, maximize benefits and minimize harm.

Reinvigorated efforts to increase access to radiotherapy

Radiotherapy is among the most cost-effective, efficient and widely-used cancer treatments, and may be considered as a treatment option for an estimated half of cancer patients. Despite being a critical component of cancer care, however, worldwide access to radiotherapy is still inadequate, particularly in lower-income countries.

To reinvigorate efforts to address this problem, WHO is joining forces with the IAEA, as it launches Rays of Hope. This new project will prioritize a limited number of high-impact, cost-effective and sustainable interventions in line with national needs and commitment, starting in Africa.

Scale-up critical given the impact of the pandemic

Increased efforts to scale up high quality cancer programmes at international, national and community levels are all the more important given disruption to cancer programmes during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a survey published in October 2021, more than half of countries reporting indicated that cancer screening and treatment had been partially or completely disrupted during the pandemic.

By collaboration, commitment and solidarity, however, hope can be provided to the many millions of people for whom cancer treatment has in the past been little more than a dream.

Man Arrested At A Lodge After Beating Up Lover

By- Plans by a couple for a romantic sleepover at a city lodge in Masvingo turned ugly when the man ended up in police custody for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

Harare Pastor Undresses, Attacks Married Congregant Over Debt

By- A Harare pastor has reportedly teamed up with his wife, and some members of his flock attacked and undressed a married congregant during a crossover service in Epworth.

The victim now accuses the pastor and his wife of witchcraft, saying she has had continuous blood flow ever since the day of the attack.

Pastor Alfonce Mudzingwa of The Light Angel Apostolic Church allegedly teamed with other congregants and attacked Zamiwe Genti for demanding her money from Mudzingwa’s wife.

“The pastor and his wife teamed up with other congregants in attacking me after I confronted his wife for failing to pay my money. During the attack, the church secretary, together with Mai Mufundisi, removed my panties and hid them. From that day I have been menstruating and suspect Mai Mufundisi of bewitching me. They deserted their home from that day after I lodged a police report under RRB 5028157 at Epworth Police Station.
“No church services are being conducted since December because of that incident. My worry is about the non-stop blood flow and my husband is threatening to divorce me over the disappearance of my panties.”
Pr Mudzingwa confirmed the incident saying Genti attended the church service drunk and uttered unprintable words.
“That lady had some issues with my wife concerning clothing transactions,” said Pr Mudzingwa.
“On the day in question she came for the church service drunk and attacked my wife verbally over a debt. She went on to disturb the service and we decided to deal with her. It was not her first time attacking my wife. Some weeks before that Crossover Day she came to my house and attacked my wife and ended up taking a pot with relish, which was on the stove, and threw it away.
“Izvozvo ndizvo zvaakaroverwa zvekuzobviswa kwake bhurugwa izvo anotobvunza vakamuita izvozvo.”
Mai Mufundisi, who is believed to have visited her rural village following the incident, could not be reached for comment.
The church secretary and two others were reported to have been arrested and have since appeared in court over the issue. H Metro

400 Bank Workers Lose Jobs To Digitisation

By-At least 321 bank workers were retrenched between 2020 and 2021 while a further 119 are set to be laid off this year as the sector embraces digital transformation, amid calls to retrain staff to take up new roles to avoid layoffs.

Zimbabwe Banks and Allied Workers Union (Zibawu) secretary general Peter Mutasa on Thursday told New Ziana that automation of banking services would result in the laying off of more workers in the future.

“From 2020 and 2021 a total of 327 permanent workers were retrenched. This excludes many who were on fixed term contracts who lost employment too,” he said.

“We have started the year with bad news of 119 Steward Bank employees who are being retrenched now,” he added.

In a memo to workers early this month, Steward bank said the push towards digital banking had informed the decision to lay off staff.

“Following the successful deployment of our new core banking processes and the investments we continue to make in our digital transformation journey, Steward Bank has embarked on a retrenchment exercise to rationalise staffing levels,” it said.

Mutasa described the digital revolution as “a difficult period for workers”.

“Firstly we are lobbying authorities to take this shift seriously and come up with policy interventions. This shift is not just affecting workers but the whole nation. Government revenues, employment, social security and many other challenges need policy considerations.

“Secondly, we are also encouraging workers to upgrade themselves in order to acquire new skills that can match the new requirements. Unfortunately, because the nation is not ready also for the changes that are happening, the opportunities and information are limited. We are also negotiating with employers to develop programs for upskilling and reskilling of the workers as alternatives to retrenchments.

“The union is also coordinating the formation of workers’ cooperatives for workers to establish entrepreneurial ventures as teams for sustenance in case they lose jobs,” he said.

Bankers Association of Zimbabwe Ralph Watungwa said banks had the task to train workers to catch up with latest digital trends.

“The types of jobs that become available are those that are more qualitative which relate to talking to customers- sales roles, those are still there. Financial advisory roles are still there and potentially software development becomes new jobs that get created because of the migration which is not specific to banking. It’s a trend that is across all sectors.

“Banks will have to ensure that the people who are now moving into new roles which are replaced by automation are retrained to be able to deal with the new environment,” he said. – New Ziana

Zanu PF Boss In Girlfriend Death Threats Storm

By- A Zanu PF top official in Manicaland has been threatened to be killed by his girlfriend.

Albert Nyakuedzwa, the Zanu PF Makoni district committee chairperson, recently approached Rusape Magistrates Court seeking a peace order against his girlfriend, Tariro Faith Mhondiwa.

Nyakuedzwa is the husband to the provincial women’s boss Happiness Nyakuedzwa.

In his founding affidavit dated February 7, Nyakuedzwa cited Mhondiwa as the respondent. Reads the affidavit:

I am a married man with children residing at Forkington Farm, Headlands. I was involved in an extramarital affair with the respondent and I would constantly visit her place of residence.

As time went on, the respondent and I started having problems and I tried to end the relationship. Sometime last year when I went to her house, she (Mhondiwa) locked me inside for four hours against my will while she went away.

When I stopped going to her home, she was incessantly calling me and texting threatening to shoot me and send people to kill me. On another occasion, the respondent threw a water glass at me and I was hit on the head.

He said he is now in fear for his life and is constantly under stress as she calls me and texts to harass him.

Nyakuedzwa confirmed the matter when contacted for comment.

Nyakuendzwa told NewsDay Zimbabwe that the matter is no longer going to court.

Arteta Hits Back At Aubameyang

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has hit back at Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after the striker accused the gaffer of having a problem with him during his time at the Emirates Stadium.

Aubameyang left the London club in January after his contract was terminated.

The 32-year-old had been frozen out at the Gunners and stripped of the captaincy following a disciplinary breach.

He then joined Barcelona on a free transfer, signing a three-year-contract.

Speaking on the fallout, Aubameyang said: “I don’t think I did anything wrong. I think (the problem) was just with him. He wasn’t happy. I was calm and that’s it.”

But Arteta has countered the claims and said he was the “solution, not the problem”.

The Arsenal boss told reporters on Wednesday: “I am extremely grateful for what Auba has done at the club, for his contribution since I have been here and the way I see myself in that relationship is the solution, not the problem.

“What I am saying is that I’ve been this solution, 100 per cent, I can look in the eye of anybody.

“I do lot of things wrong, for sure. But the intention all the time is the best – and not for me, it is for the club and for the team.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe
