Joyinani Says: Mnangagwa Is Also Nelson Chamisa’s President | FULL TEXT

Mlilo Joyinani

By Mlilo Joyinani, Shadow Councillor Ward One, Harare South | I am not representing anyone except the people of Zimbabwe.

I don’t know but I understand that the so called Vengai Musengi, the ZANU PF youth chair for Mashonaland West is somehow talking something of high quality. President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa is not anyone’s property, he is the president of The Republic of Zimbabwe. He is also Nelson Chamisa’s president!

Musengi has no power whatsoever not to allow Hon.Temba Mliswa to attend the president’s occasions.

Hon. Mliswa is a hardworker and the likes of the Musengis are afraid of him. Sometimes we must face reality in life and dump ancient politics, attending our president’s occasions actually show patriotism not cronyism.

These are the same people who are advocating for constituency delimitations and by-elections yet the same people who are there are doing nothing.

We don’t need all those things but development.

Musengi does not cast more than one vote as an individual so he must not think that he is more ZANU Pf than others.

ZANU PF has no owner and it is a very big institution which has no obstacle, if you try to be an obstacle you suffer the consequences.

*ZANU PF HAINA GOMO OR MURIDZI NDEYEVANHU*

We need five million votes but you see some people chasing away the same votes which we want. That is utter rubbish and absolutely nonsense.

If Nelson Chamisa decides to attend any function being addressed by the president that’s his right.
Now is the time not to be passive, primitive and backward!

Hon. Temba Mliswa is a hard worker so let us leave him alone,he is a patriotic cdre who knows what we want.

Zanu PF is not a company.

S*xually Weak Man Bashes Wife

By A Correspondent- A Bulawayo woman has shocked the court after revealing that her man was resorting to pounding her with fists because his sexual organ was weak and could not satisfy her in bed.

Nonmatter Mlambo (32) approached Western Commonage court to seek legal intervention after her husband, Mqondisi Msipa (45), assaulted her in front of her aunt who had visited them.
Mlambo said the problem started when she engaged her husband’s aunt about Msipa’s erectile dysfunction problem. After that, their marriage became a sour affair because Msipa constantly accused her of bad-mouthing him with his aunt.
Mlambo said the situation escalated as her husband would hurl insults at her before assaulting her and would issue death threats. Fearing for her life, Mlambo applied for a protection order against her husband.

“I’m applying for a protection order against my husband, who physically and verbally abuses me for confiding in his aunt that we are facing a problem in our marriage because he is sexually weak as he quickly climaxes, leaving me sexually starved.
“His aunt sold me out because she told him that I approached her. After that, my husband would verbally attack me, and at times, he would beat me up.
In addition to that, he is a self-centred man who does not take advice and wants whatever he says to take precedence,” she said.
She added: “I fear that he will end up killing me.”
The presiding magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube granted Mlambo a protection order against her husband and ordered him not to physically and verbally abuse his wife.

Does Chamisa Have A Plan? Gambakwe Conversation With Phugheni

NOMAZULU-THATA

By Nomazulu Thata | These two personalities are painfully uneven. Whereas Phugheni is eloquently brilliant, a very intelligent man, I should be excused if I said Gambakwe is challenged, borderline. It defeats my mind to realize that Phugheni somehow enjoys entertaining Gambakwe in his media channel. I have never understood the symbiotic relationship between the two. The second question will be: why do I, Nomazulu access Gambakwe media; if I say, it is one of those gutter portals; always producing cheap political discussions most of the time too stupid to comprehend?

I remember reading or listening to media comments that the late former Chancellor Helmut Kohl made when he was critiqued about his love of reading the “Bild Zeitung”. He replied: whoever avoids reading the “Bild Zeitung”, means they have no idea what the majority of million citizens of Germany think.

If possible, read all newspapers, time is permitting; said Dr. Kohl: MHISRIP. I have admired him on his politics on EU integration and Euro currency that marked his legacy; However, I have never voted for the Christian Democratic Party.
The Gambakwe media is well attended by Zimbabweans mostly in the Diaspora who yearn for news from home. I suppose its simplicity, especially in content invites those who find the likes of Trevor Ncube boring because of highly pitched styles of interviews academic and also professional.

Ncube exclusively selects professionals for his interview: one of the interviews he gave was with Advocate Mahere: an interview that remained in me for a long time mainly because of its inspiration. Advocate Mahere shone in that interview: I loved the effortless flow of intellect and self-confidence: she is well-versed with her work, a political animal if I were to express this in German slang language.

We have been told by Gambakwe that Advocate Mahere has on many occasions declined a one-to-one interview with Gambakwe. Hearing this coming from Gambakwe himself, I said to myself: Mahere will never sink this low to spend an hour with Gambakwe interview: a social media that exemplifies everything paltry and wretched. Gambakwe interview with Phugheni was yesterday the 26th on Sunday, went straight to the point, tells Gambakwe inadvertently off. Gambakwe in his mental simplicity and nativity: he did not recognize the undercurrent of sarcasm in that yesterday interview with Phugheni.

Gambakwe: “I am not attacking Chamisa, I am analysing him: I think this has in line with we shall talk about today. Did you hear the interview Chamisa made with Mhlanga recently”?

Phugheni: “Well, Gambakwe you are a very intelligent man and properly qualified.” “You have spoken about the Mahere pregnancy that turned out to be false. The gutter messages coming from your conversation with Jonas is just despicable. It did not surprise that Mahere was cross with you.” (Gambakwe tells all that when he suffered from Covid 19, he ascended to heaven and came back: that is not normal by all standards. This is the moment when we say people who makes such claims are hallucinating or borderline– yet we continue to listen to his video interviews talking absolute nonsense and wretchedness together with Tinashe Jonas.)

Phugheni: “you go to Zimbabwe for two or three minutes, you come back start talking about Zimbabwe more than the people who live here. You visit few places of choice and generalize to mean Zimbabwe has been developed by the second dispensation.

Not very long ago you were a staunch supporter of MDC-Alliance: How you exalted Chamisa. How many videos did you make in support of him? Overnight you are in awe and wonder of Zanu PF. You now see everything bad about Chamisa, the leader you worshipped.” You were a fanatic of Chamisa, but now you turn around, it’s now praise about praise with the Zanu government. How I wish you could genuinely critique Chamisa appropriately and not attack personally, analyse him when he makes mistakes and not attack him. Analyse us if we make mistake and praise us if we make inroads in our spaces of governance.

This country needs democracy Gambakwe. Stop demonizing Chamisa without valid content: they are never after you. You know Gambakwe, we need an opposition that critiques the current government. I can give you an example. We have seen how opposition has been criminalized or reduced to criminals. We do not like such; but we want a government that respects opposing views in opposition sections of our societies for the sake of democracy.”

“Gambakwe, what Chamisa said at his interview with Blessed Mhlanga, the name change of MDC-Alliance should never be of concern to us in the opposition. It is good that he keeps strategies to himself. Chamisa is between rock and hard surface and not to divulge some of his strategies early in the game: this is not to be seen as a sign of immaturity at all”.

“I personally am one of those who cried against sanctions that they do not harm the intended section of a people in power especially but much to the ordinary people.

Notwithstanding the sanctions Mr. Gambakwe, we have natural resources in this country that are supposed to benefit those who live in that region. Let me give an example, The Marange diamonds were supposed to benefit the people living in that region. It has not been the case. About 51% of the diamond revenues were supposed to remain in the region benefitting the people of that region.”

“We consider these as serios leakages: people who do not come from Marange go there and mine and go away. The people in Marange got nothing but instead were displaced from their ancestral lands to make way for diamond mining without compensation by foreigners.

This brings me back to devolution. Devolution was meant to remove power from the centre to the regions to take care of the wealth found in the region. These are leakages the government needs to address. There are no schools, no roads, no clinics built by foreigners who were given permission for mining rights. The people demand basics from billion dollars’ worth of diamonds that were extracted from Marange as a sign that resources benefits benefactors.
We have poverty in this country of unimaginable proportions.

There are students and pupils I must pay for their school fees. Leakages from the mineral resources syphoned out of this country should be serving the growing up citizens for a better future. This is what I could take from the interview Gambakwe made with Phugheni: interviews I continue to remember and do not escape my consciousness during the day means it was significant. I respected the way Phugheni “conducted” the interview. Phugheni did not want to be drawn into threshing Chamisa: what was Gambakwe’s intention. (When Gambakwe and Phugheni start talking, always its Phugheni who navigates the show!)

Gambakwe has been switching sides from one to the other: gave platform Albert Matapo for a long time: prior to Matapo, he was a Chamisa chete chete: always from one extreme end to the next. Now he sees everything wrong about Chamisa; If Gambakwe finds the slogan: “Chikomana ngachipinde” so stupid, tasteless, and shallow; why is Gambakwe comfortable with “Pasi ne mandu” from ED? What has happened now that Gambakwe sees no evil with Zanu PF; he goes on to the extent of peddling lies about how safe Zimbabwe is. Hell no!!!

In retrospect, Zimbabwe is not safe at all; Zvikomborero Haruzivishe is languishing in prison. For most of us who have been loud about Zanu PF and Mnangagwa, it will be folly to listen to advice coming from a gutter media that has found a home in Jongwe Zanu headquarters. By his own admission, he visited the Jongwe House when he was in Harare.

One thing was obvious in that interview: Gambakwe wants to use the powerful and eloquent Phugheni to thresh Chamisa. Phugheni does not want to be used because, apparently, he is a man of his own ideas. He realized early at the beginning of the interview the intentions of Gambakwe, he side-lined almost all issues Gambakwe tried to put across; really to go for a finish on Chamisa – Phugheni had no take, not that he likes Chamisa, he did not want to be drawn into a party with Gambakwe. Evidently, he reminded Gambakwe never to school him about Polad, in retrospect he has previously spoken about it in his media channel practically teaching him: for Gambakwe to want to get the upper hand in political facts and knowledge outside his abilities and capabilities is just stupid and unintelligible.

On one hand, Khaliphani Phugheni is a brilliant man: However, I dislike his politics especially in relation to ED Mnangagwa. On the other hand, I would believe there is great potential in him that could be beneficial to the nation. Credit must be given to where it is due: Just his brilliance and eloquence alone is admirable. He is not arrogant but down to earth. I have listened to all his interviews with Gambakwe, but this one of the 26th of September was one of his best, albeit interviewed by a simpleton Gambakwe who does not realize that when Advocate Mahere refused an interview with him, it is not that she fears questions coming from him; instead to think so, is insulting Mahere’s intelligence.

I may not have quoted Phugheni correctly. This is what I could gather from that interview that I really enjoyed listening to. For some reason, that interview exposed the worst out of Gambakwe, and we were able to realize that his Gambakwe media has been captured by Zanu PF. However, he needs Phugheni in his media house to shine better in his onslaught with Chamisa: Apparently or inadvertently Phugheni has taught him politics: knowledge he now boasts to be his. Hence Phugheni constantly shot him down and reminded him about where the source of his knowledge base came from.

Just like I said about Albert Matapo, lets us watch Gambakwe and his intentions. Zimbabwe is not safe. Do not get overexcited about advice coming from Gambakwe media, it is harmful advice you can be in serious trouble going home if you have been vocal about Mnangagwa’s dispensation. ED Mnangagwa’s administration is worse than that of Robert Gabriel Mugabe. Let us wait “Chikomana chipinde” and we shall take it from there.

Will Swipe System Stop Police Bribery?

Swipe system

POLICE are rolling out a multi payment system at roadblocks across the country which will see motorists using all modes of payment and settling some of their fines on the spot.

The system will see motorists pay their fines through Point of Sale (POS), EcoCash and cash at roadblocks. This is part of efforts to improve service delivery and avoid unnecessary delays at roadblocks.

Police Commissioner- General Godwin Matanga in a statement recently instructed police officers to desist from causing unnecessary delays for motorists at roadblocks.

He issued the directive to police commanders at provincial, district and station level to ensure that police officers on the ground minimise unnecessary delays to the public at roadblocks and checkpoints.

In an interview National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the initiative was in line with Government’s drive of “ease of doing business.”

“We are working on adopting a multi payment system at our roadblocks in line with Government’s drive of ease of doing business. Under the system we will introduce Point of Sale, EcoCash and cash payments at our roadblocks.

This will mean that in some situations motorists can pay their fines at roadblocks instead of going to stations,” he said.

Asst Comm Nyathi said motorists will also be able to pay their fines using either POS, EcoCash or cash at police stations.

He added: “This will help prevent unnecessary delay of motorists and it won’t inconvenience drivers who won’t be having cash at hand. We want to apply ease of doing business while at the same time maintaining law and order and promoting safety on our roads.”

Asst Comm Nyathi appealed to motorists to cooperate with the police under this new system. He said motorists also have to ensure that they produce correct particulars.

He also said modalities will be put in place to ensure that the multi payment system is secure and not abused by rogue members of the force.

The police spokesperson said more information on the system will be released in due course.

“Government is embracing smart policing and in the process is ensuring that each police officer is placed under surveillance. Modalities will be put in place to ensure that this multi payment system is not abused by rogue members of the force and corrupt motorists,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.

Asst Comm Nyathi said this does not mean that motorists have to take advantage of the multi payment system to commit traffic offences knowing that they now have convenient ways of paying their fines.

He said the police will continue to enforce road regulations in order to preserve lives and reduce road carnages. He urged motorists to adhere to road regulations at all times. Chronicle

Pills That Treat COVID-19 Being Developed- Health Experts

At least three companies are developing daily pills that can fight the coronavirus early after diagnosis and conceivably prevent symptoms from developing after exposure.

Timothy Sheahan, a virologist at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill who has helped pioneer these therapies said:

Oral antivirals have the potential to not only curtail the duration of one’s covid-19 syndrome, but also have the potential to limit transmission to people in your household if you are sick.

The medications developed to treat and prevent viral infections in people and animals, work differently depending on the type. But they can be engineered to boost the immune system to fight infection, block receptors so viruses can’t enter healthy cells, or lower the amount of active virus in the body.

At least three promising antivirals for covid are being tested in clinical trials, with results expected as soon as late fall or winter, said Carl Dieffenbach, director of the Division of AIDS at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who is overseeing antiviral development.

The top contender is a medication from Merck & Co. and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics called molnupiravir, Dieffenbach said. Two others include a candidate from Pfizer, known as PF-07321332, and AT-527, an antiviral produced by Roche and Atea Pharmaceuticals.

They work by interfering with the virus’s ability to replicate in human cells. In the case of molnupiravir, the enzyme that copies the viral genetic material is forced to make so many mistakes that the virus can’t reproduce. That, in turn, reduces the patient’s viral load, shortening infection time and preventing the kind of dangerous immune response that can cause serious illness or death.

So far, only one antiviral drug, remdesivir, has been approved to treat covid. But it is given intravenously to patients ill enough to be hospitalized, and is not intended for early, widespread use.

By contrast, the top contenders under study can be packaged as pills.

Sheahan, who also performed preclinical work on redeliver, led an early study in mice that showed that molnupiravir could prevent early disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes covid.

The formula was discovered at Emory University and later acquired by Ridgeback and Merck.

Clinical trials have followed, including an early trial of 202 participants last spring that showed that molnupiravir rapidly reduced the levels of infectious virus.

This daily orally administered medication, ideally a single pill, could be taken for five to 10 days at the first confirmation of covid infection.- CNN

ZRP Says No Reports Yet On ZANU PF Violence

POLICE yesterday said they are still to receive reports on cases of violence that are said to have been witnessed across the country in the ongoing Zanu PF restructuring exercise.

This is despite confirmed cases of violence in Harare, Mashonaland Central and Midlands provinces and demonstrations in Manicaland province against provincial chairman Mike Madiro.

Police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said no report on the alleged violence has been made.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has not received any reports throughout the country in terms of violence and assault and that is the position,” Nyathi told NewsDay yesterday.

In Harare, provincial chairperson Godwills Masimirembwa confirmed to the media that he was assaulted by aspiring chairperson, Godwin Gomwe during a restructuring exercise in Epworth on Sunday.

“Zanu PF does not tolerate any violence,” Masimirembwa was quoted saying.

“Even if you disagree on things, you have to dialogue, and not use violence. Law enforcement agents are dealing with that matter. I did not fight him. He assaulted me.”

Masimirembwa said he had made a police report. Gomwe was not immediately available for comment.

In Gokwe-North, there were reports of skirmishes that saw the local district coordinating committee chairperson Justice Mayor Wadyajena intervening to rescue a party official who was under siege and taken to a local police station on accusations of manipulating the voting process.

Reports from Mashonaland Central yesterday indicated that police were called in to calm down flaring tampers after some party officials in Mt Darwin were allegedly caught trying to manipulate the electoral process. The elections were summarily aborted.

Party provincial deputy secretary for the commissariat, Shepherd Kararira, was allegedly caught stuffing ballot boxes with already marked ballots.- State Media

Meanwhile, ZIMSEC announced that it will publish dates for 22 Advanced and Ordinary level practical subjects later. ZIMSEC board chairman, Eddie Mwenje, said:

The practical subjects’ dates will be announced once everything is in place. However, we are working on not shifting the timetable too much because if we do so we might not be able to have Grade Sevens write and have their results this year.

Police Recover Hundreds Of Stolen Cattle

By A Correspondent- Police in Gwanda has recovered hundreds of cattle that cattle rustlers had stolen from local farmers.

Some of the farmers have since managed to locate their livestock from Shanyawugwe and Makhado near Beitbridge.

Some villagers and two police officers
were heavily assaulted by the suspected cattle thieves who tried to block the search parties from accessing their areas.

Officer commanding Gwanda District police Chief Superintendent Mandlenkosi Moyo said various arms of the police had been deployed to the areas suspected to be the epicenter of cattle rustling.
He said they are patrolling with the Dog section, Support Unit, and horse Unit.
In a whatsap audio to farmers in the district, Chief Sup Moyo called on farmers who may have fallen victim to the rustlers to converge to Shanyawugwe Business centre on Wednesday to help identify the stolen cattle.

“We have been on the ground with over 100 police details since the weekend and have arrested some of the suspects. We have also managed to recover hundreds of suspected stolen cattle. The operation will continue until we bring the matter to a close,” he said.
Chief Sup Moyo said the farmers will also be taken to grazing areas where some of the stolen cattle were being kept by the rustlers.
He said police will not spare any effort to address the problem.
“We know some of you have been raising complaints on how police have handled the problem of stock theft cases. We will attend to your concerns as our public relations teams will be available as well. We want to solve this problem before we lose lives,” he said.

200 000 Zimbabweans Panic Over SA Work Permits

By A Correspondent- Almost 200 000 diasporans using Zimbabwean Special Dispensation permits (ZSDP) in South Africa have been unsettled by the host country’s delays in renewing their visas.

The Zimbabweans under the ZSDP facility acquired their documents in 2010. They were renewed in 2014 and 2017.

Indications are that the documents will expire on December 31, thus the need for renewal.

Zimbabwe Community in SA chairperson Ngqabutho Mabhena said they were still waiting for the South African Home Affairs minister Pakishe Aaron Motsoaledi to announce the way forward on the permits.
“We had hoped that they would announce it this September, but we are now drawing close to the end of the month. Traditionally, they announce before mid-September. The permit application process normally begins from October 1 to December 31. This was the case in 2010, 2014 and 2017,” Mabhena said.

“We will be contacting the SA Home Affairs ministry to find out what is happening during the course of this week. We are also receiving reports of financial institutions like banks which are asking people to update their accounts since their passports will be expiring or their permits coming to an end.”

Mabhena said the Zimbabwe Community in SA and the African Diaspora Forum were working with the Zimbabwean embassy on the issue.

“In 2010, 295 000 people had applied for the permits and 245 000 of them were issued with permits. By 2017, we had 198 000 that had applied to renew their permits. Our desire is that the holders of the Zimbabwe special permits should be granted permanent resident permits,” he said.

A few weeks ago, the Zimbabwe consul-general to Johannesburg, Melody Chaurura, said the embassy was engaging South African authorities on the issue of special permits.

“We can, however, confirm that consultations on the issue have been underway among the relevant stakeholders in South Africa and the issue has since been submitted to Cabinet for decisions,” she said.

“In this regard, we continue to wait for pronouncements by the government’s competent authorities on the future of these permits. In the meantime, we encourage the holders of these permits to exercise patience and to be watchful for scams.”

South Africa is believed to be home to an estimated three million Zimbabweans; both irregular and regular immigrants.

Child Marriages Wreak Havoc In Chipinge, Parents Depressed By The Situation

By Desdemona Munengwa| The continued closure of schools has had adverse effects on young girls in Chipinge with cases of teenage pregnancies and child marriages reportedly on the rise since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak early last year.

According to Likhani Muvhamba who works for Chipinge based Platform for Youth and Community Development (PYCD), lockdowns have worsened ill behavior among youths.

“Checheche is a fast growing town and children who live in and around the growth point are engaging in mischievous behavior, it is now common to see young girls and boys aged below 15 years in bottle stores and night clubs,” said Muvhamba.

Catherine Vhutuza from Chipinge Rural District council ward 20, Chibuwe area, another area that has recorded a high number of teenage pregnancies bemoaned the fact that some of the girls are engaging in unsafe abortions.

Vhutuza said in her area, a grade 7 girl died while giving birth, in what has left the whole community in shock and disbelief.

Muumbe secondary school in ward 25 of Chipinge Rural District council recorded a high number school dropout cases.

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), over 800 million learners from around the world have been affected, with one in five learners failing to attend elementary school, one in four missing higher education classes.

PYCD gender activist Cynthia Gwenzi reported that her organization had handled four cases of teen pregnancies in two weeks, three in Chinyamukwakwa and one in Mabee including a tragic one where a 14 year old girl died together with her unborn child.

Platform for Youth and community Development, Claris Madhuku told this publication that in Chipinge district where they have been raising awareness on Sexual Reproductive Health Rights, cases of teen pregnancies and early marriages are decreasing.

UEFA Drops Case Against Giants Real Madrid, Barca, Juve…

Uefa has dropped its disciplinary case against Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus over their involvement in the controversial European Super League.

The clubs were among the 12 “founding” members of the breakaway league, which later collapsed.

The European football’s governing body moved to punish the trio after they refused to give up on the plans, but a ruling from a Madrid court blocked the sanction.

A statement by UEFA says: “UEFA takes note of the letter sent today by the independent UEFA Appeals Body in which the disciplinary proceedings that had been opened against FC Barcelona, Juventus FC and Real Madrid CF for a potential violation of UEFA’s legal framework in connection with the so-called ‘Super League’ project have been declared null and void, without any prejudice, as if the proceedings had never been opened.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Gender-balanced Leadership: Guarding Financial Stability in Crisis Times

By Ashleigh Jinjika
Empowering women is also absolutely critical to achieving economic stability, to promoting growth and indeed, to transforming entire economies. And that is at the core of the development of any nation.

Gender gaps remain significant around the world, both with respect to opportunities and outcomes. Whether these are legal restrictions or barriers in access to education, health and financial services; women do not fully participate in the global economy.
And women have borne the brunt of the economic disruption caused by the pandemic. In Zimbabwe, despite making up less than half of the workforce, they accounted for 55% of jobs lost due to the novel COVID 19 lockdowns.
From an economic standpoint, that is a significant lost opportunity, hence closing the gender gap in less developed countries with very low female labor force participation, could increase GDP and livelihoods of women.
At times of crises, such as the one we are in right now, gender balanced leadership is even more important, not just in terms of diverse decision-making, but also in avoiding measures that may disproportionately impact women. Hence, the need to seriously examine the role of women as finance leaders.

Revealed: Mthuli Ncube Spending USD $ 200 Per Night At Luxurious Hotel

Tinashe Sambiri| Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube is spending USD 200 per night at a luxurious hotel in central Harare, it has emerged.

Mthuli Ncube has been staying at Meikles International Hotel for the past three years- at the expense of the taxpayer.

MDC Alliance vice president Hon Tendai Biti has challenged the minister to vacate the hotel with immediate effect.

“The is the worst government in the history of governments.

A bankrupt vacuous regime . How does a government minister spend 3 years living in a grand hotel at the expense of the tax payer.”

Team Pachedu also took the regime to task for wasting the taxpayer’s money on Mthuli’s hotel bills.

“Mthuli Ncube has been staying at @MeiklesHotel for the past 3 years, paying US$200 per night at our expense.

The total hotel bill is US$200,000, which could have been used for the betterment of the tax payers.

Shame on you @MthuliNcube!

Gender discrimination in access to capital: A case of Zimbabwe

By Ashleigh Jinjika

Access to capital is widely considered a key accelerator for business productivity and growth.

Gender discrimination against entrepreneurs, who form the largest sector of the labor force in Zimbabwe , may drive gender gaps in access to capital and subsequently reduce the performance of female-owned businesses.

This raises concerns about both gender equity and economic growth. Due to discrimination, capital may not be allocated to the most productive businesses, which would, in turn, reduce economic growth.

The trend in Zimbabwe’s financial providers sector reveals discrimination against female entrepreneurs when evaluating their business’ productivity.

In some instances female owned businesses or projects are trivialised and doubted their sustainability, hence the regrets in accessing financial assistance in forms of loans.

However, the implications of discrimination for financial providers’ ability to “pick winners” and successfully allocate capital to the most productive businesses because of gender is a cause for concern in developing countries like Zimbabwe.

There is need for a complete change of the mindset and subsequently much awareness and sensitisation to be done if the country has to fully address the issue.

Kazembe, Matanga Slapped Loses Another Lawsuit, Ordered To Pay US$12 000

By A Correspondent| The High Court has ordered Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe and Commissioner-General of Zimbabwe Republic Police Godwin Matanga to pay Linda Musiyamhanje US$12 000 as damages for violation of her fundamental rights when she was unlawfully arrested, detained and prosecuted 10 years ago for allegedly murdering a police officer.

High Court Judge Justice Jacob Manzunzu on 23 September 2021 ordered Kazembe and Matanga to pay Musiyamhanje US$12 000 as damages for unlawful arrest, unlawful detention, malicious prosecution, pain and suffering and loss of income after the opposition MDC party supporter was apprehended and charged together with 28 other Harare residents with murdering Inspector Petros Mutedza, as defined in Section 47 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act and in the alternative with public violence as defined in section 36 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

However, Musiyamhanje was found not guilty by Justice Chinembiri Bhunu in 2013 and was acquitted at the close of the prosecution case.

This prompted Musiyamhanje, who was represented by Jeremiah Bamu and Fiona Iliff of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights and Rutendo Muchenje of Mbidzo, Muchadehama and Makoni Legal Practitioners, to sue Kazembe and Matanga for damages after she spent 11 months in prison in 2011 on charges of murdering Inspector Mutedza.

In summons filed at the High Court, Musiyamhanje argued that upon arrest, she was detained in cruel and inhuman conditions and was assaulted by police officers who did not bother to verify her alibi.

She also argued that she had lost income as a result of the arrest and lengthy detention at Chikurubi Female Prison.

On 23 September 2021, Justice Manzunzu ordered Kazembe and Matanga to pay Musiyamhanje US$12 000 payable at the prevailing official Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe exchange rate in full as compensation for the violation of her fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution.

Dr Khupe Bemoans Road Carnage

MDC-T deputy President and legislator Thokozani Khupe has lamented over the continued road carnage along the national highways.

“Minister (Felix) Mhona (Transport) is one of the Ministers who normally act swiftly when requested to bring in Ministerial Statements, so I would like to thank him for that. It is so sad to be losing people through road carnage and I have discovered that in most cases when repairs are done on the roads, there is poor workmanship,” she said.

“I would like to single out the road towards Sable as you are driving into Kwekwe, that road has been repaired severally but the road is bumpy. As motorists are driving, some of them will be driving fast and as they drive along those roads, they end up losing control and accidents happen.  I would like to appeal to you Minister so that you make sure that there is thorough supervision as these people repair roads.”

She said it would appear as if these people do not know what they are doing because they cannot be repairing a road over and over again.

“I would also like to urge the Minister that there be signage on the roads.  Where there are curves, people must know you are approaching a curve and you must slow down.  If it means putting the humps down so that people slow down, I think it is better that way,” she said.

Responding to Khupe, Mhona agreed with her over the concerns.

“I can give a good example of people using Seke Road. It was bumpy because each year we could just patch and that is not the desired state of a road.  You need to reclaim the road so that you start it from afresh and if you then drive now along Seke Road, it is now perfect,” he said.

“So, the idea of patching in Shona we will say kungotambisa nguva, surely in terms of stability it will not be stable.  So, we have raised the issue of roads that are bumpy and that we also need to reclaim.  As we gravitate towards the budget cycle, it is again my humble plea to lobby for funds so that we adequately rehabilitate our roads not just pothole filling.”

Livestock Theft Irks Mat South Villagers

By A Correspondent- Villagers in Matebeleland South province have raised concern over the increase in livestock theft in their area, and have blamed the police for failure to curb the vice.

The most affected areas are Matopos, Sikithi, Silobini, Gwanda, Mtshabezi and Brunerbegy, among others.

Several villagers who spoke to Southern Eye said police were failing to deal with the problem.

“We have lost so many cattle, donkeys and sometimes goats to thieves. We believe that those culprits stealing from us are either community members or are people from nearby areas,” a villager Thandanani Zondo said.

“We have tried to talk to our traditional leaders so that we come up with a long-lasting solution that will assist us to stop this theft, but nothing has been done. We have reported these matters to police several times but police have not yet taken any action.”

Another villager, who refused to be named, said: “We see a lot of roadblocks along Beitbridge road, but no one has been arrested for stealing our livestock. Trucks transporting cattle are moving around everyday, and we then wonder what the police are doing on the roads. We appeal to the government to help us before we take matters into our own hands. We cannot sit and watch people destroying us. We have made appeals for assistance to the Guyu police.”

Matabeleland South acting police spokesperson Sergeant Thandolwenkosi Moyo said they were aware of stocktheft reports in the province.

“As police officers, we have received a lot of complaints from people around the province and we are still investigating those cases,” she said.

“I want to assure people that many arrests have been made and we will continue with our investigations.”

However, Moyo could not be drawn into giving the number of arrests made to date.-Newsday

Harvest Moon Rising Over Filey Beach Captured in Leeds

The moon rising over Filey Beach on Monday evening

By Aziza Yaqubi | On September 20th the Harvest Moon appeared in the night sky over the UK and some other parts of the world, with many photographers capturing the full bright moon.

However, the spectacular looking moon will appear on several other nights. It will be visible soon after sunset and can be seen with the naked eye.

Harvest Moon is the term given to the full moon that is closest to the autumn equinox, which derive from Native American Culture, and refers to when daylight hours begin to reduce for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere.

The name relates to the harvest time when farmers would harvest their crops before the autumn frost.

The video shows the bright large orange moon rising over the sea in Filey beach, North of Leeds.

No Water For Gweru Over Electricity Woes

By A Correspondent- Gweru is set to be without water for five days per week due to electricity problems after the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company introduced a tight load-shedding schedule.

In a statement last week, the Gweru City Council said power would be cut for six to 10 hours per day at their main water suppliers, Gwenoro and Range Booster.

Said the local government:

We would like to advise residents, clients and stakeholders that power will be switched off for 10 and six hours respectively at Gwenoro Water Works (G2) and the Range Booster (G8).

Hence, we will not be pumping for 16 hours on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday owing to the recently released national 2021 load-shedding programme by ZETDC (Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company).

We, therefore, encourage residents to use water sparingly as some areas will not receive water at all on these days.

Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Development Association Trust executive director David Chikore Saturday said the latest development, coupled with occasional water problems was likely to expose the city to water-borne diseases.

Gweru water challenges have intensified when the city has for months been facing challenges in pumping water as a result of incessant pipe bursts caused by ageing infrastructure.

“I Am Ready For You”: Mugabe Tells Dhala

By A Correspondent- Zanu Pf’s aspiring Kwekwe central member of Parliament Kandros Mugabe said he is prepared to face his rival Energy Ncube (Dhala) and win election.

Speaking to a local publication Mugabe said, “I am prepared to face Dhala and win this election, the only way we can achieve unity in the party is through the holding of primary elections to end this deadlock which has divided our party.

If the division continue to remain it will be very difficult for Kwekwe district coordinating committee (DCC) to achieve the 5 million votes for our President.

An attempt to come up with a sole candidate last year could not pass through after Dhala’s supporters turned violent and the election was aborted.

The Kwekwe central seat fell vacant following the passing of National Patriotic front legislator Masango Matambanadzo last year.

Zanu Pf Activists Invades Gweru Market, Demands US$2 Per Week

By A Correspondent- Zanu PF activists are said to have invaded Gweru’s Mtapa market in the Midlands province.

The ruling party activists are also said to be collecting US$2 per week from each of the 600 vendors operating at the site.

The Southern Eye has established that the governing party’s activists grabbed the vending stalls in May this year.

The affected vendors described the US$2 weekly fees as daylight robbery considering the state of the economy nationwide. One anonymous vendor who was affected by the development said:

This is a ploy just to milk us of our money as we are already financially overburdened.
Zanu PF Midlands provincial spokesperson Cornelius Mupereri said his office had not yet received such reports. Mupereri said:

No, the party has not been collecting fees from vendors.

But Gweru City Council spokesperson Vimbai Chingwaramusee confirmed having heard of reports that there were some people that were demanding fees from vendors at Mtapa market. She said:

In cases like these, we encourage those affected vendors to go and report the issue to the police.

Affected vendors told Southern Eye that they were afraid to report the matter to police for fear of victimisation. The governing party is alleged to have an influence on the allocation of vendors in towns.

Woman Reveals Bedroom Secrets In Court

By A Correspondent- A Bulawayo woman has told a court that her man has resorted to pounding her with fists because his sexual organ did not have to stay power to give her a good time in bed.

After that their marriage became a sour affair because Msipa constantly accused her of bad-mouthing him with his aunt.

Mlambo said the situation escalated as her husband would hurl insults at her before assaulting her and would issue death threats. Fearing for her life, Mlambo applied for a protection order against her husband.

Zanu Pf Elections Shelved Over Limited Financial Resources

By A Correspondent- Zanu PF Mashonaland Central province failed to conduct district elections yesterday in the province due to lack of resources.

Sources familiar with the incident claimed presiding officers who are supposed to move from one district to another do not have cars and fuel to go and conduct elections.

“We are having a serious challenge in conducting these elections because we do not have resources since presiding officers need to travel from one district to another our chairman Kazembe Kazembe is just too weak on mobilization of resources,” lamented a source who spoke in confidentiality.

Other party officials blamed Kazembe for mobilizing his campaign resources instead of the party.

“The chairman was supposed to oversee these elections instead of him mobilizing resources for the party he is busy getting funds from illegal gold buyers to finance his provincial campaign.”

Only part of Mount Darwin voted in Mash Central with some from rural areas lamenting lack of information and accusing the Provincial leadership of trying to have vote apathy in a bid to rig.

“How can we have an election on mid week this is an attempt by the provincial leadership to creat confusion and have vote apathy, we were given up to October 7 to complete these elections so what is the rush to have elections during mid week, some of us live in remote areas and access to information is a challenge people should shun vote rigging shenanigans,” fumed one supporter.

Meanwhile, the chaos in ZANU PF polls across the country shows failure by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to unite the party since he took over the reins from his predecessor the late Robert Mugabe in a November 2017 military coup.

Suspended Harare Town Clerk Back In Court Next Month

By A Correspondent| Suspended City of Harare Town Clerk Hosiah Chisango had his trial for criminal abuse of office postponed to the 18th of October 2021 due to the absence of State Prosecutor Zivanai Macharaga who is attending a funeral.

Allegations against Chisango are that at an unknown date to the state but during the period extending from July 2018 to September 2018, he being a public officer acted inconsistent with his duties by showing disfavor to complainant Georgios Katsimberis by claiming that he had built a show house on stand 9 of 21 on consolidated stand number 19559 of 19828 Harare Township corner Teviotdale and Whitwell road, Borrowdale Harare without approved plan while favouring Pokugara Properties (PVT) Ltd in a dispute between complainant Georgios Katsimberis and Pokugara Properties (Pvt) Ltd.

Chisango has become a ‘resident’ at the Harare magistrates’ court facing a litany of charges during his tenure at Town House. He is represented by lawyer Alec Muchadehama.

Chisango in his personal capacity alongside controversial businessman Kenneth Raydon Sharpe, Pokugara Properties and its employees Michael Van Blerk, Mandla Marlone Ndebele and three City of Harare officials Isaiah Zvenyika Chawatama, Samuel Nyabezi, Lasten Taonezvi are also facing malicious damage to property charges after they allegedly connived to destroy the show house built by Katsimberis.

“Stop The Empty Promises”: Prof Madhuku Tells Political Parties

By A Correspondent- The National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) led by Lovemore Madhuku has urged political parties in the country to desist from making empty promises to the people and focus on service delivery.

NCA spokesperson Madock Chivasa said that with the 2023 elections around the corner, there was need for political parties to come up with solutions to the country’s economic challenges instead of chanting empty slogans.

“Election season is slowly and unexpectedly approaching us. I hope that in the general elections Zimbabweans vote for leaders with the capacity to take the country forward,” Chivasa said.

“Voters must be encouraged to scrutinise manifestos and refrain from giving in to cheap empty rhetoric and sloganeering. So far, ‘ED Pfee’ and ‘Chamisa Ngaapinde’ are examples of empty rhetoric and sloganeering, with nothing to offer for poor Zimbabweans who want a better life,” he said.

Zanu-PF and the MDC Alliance are currently embroiled in social media battles for slogans, including hashtags such as #EDtheGameChanger for President Emmerson Mnangagwa and #NgaapindeHakeMukomana for MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa.

The Zanu-PF campaign is centred on Mnangagwa’s achievements since coming into power after a military coup in November 2017, while Chamisa’s followers claim that time is now ripe for the young opposition leader to lead government and address Mnangagwa’s failures.

“I am saying that all candidates — be it presidential, MPs and councillors must show and articulate more on what they want to do for the people if they are voted into office as opposed to mere sloganeering,” Chivasa said.

“Register To Vote If You Have Had Enough Of Zanu PF”

It is not fair to say Zimbabweans deserve the leaders they have. Whether through fear or otherwise, many in this land voted Zanu-PF into power.

If there was any rigging or intimidation, it was done by Zimbabweans. And so is the stealing that is rampant in government.

Corruption, too, is a wholly Zimbabwean affair, as are the laws that strip ownership of land and repel foreign direct investment. We should take ownership of all this folly, cowardice and stupidity. It is ours collectively.

We rightly deserve Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa and Masvingo Provincial Affairs minister Ezra Chadzamira as government ministers.

The activists’ work will go up in smoke if the youths do not register to vote and if Parliament does not ensure that the Registrar-General and Zimbabwe Electoral Commission work according to the dictates of the Constitution.

Parliament ought to hold the Executive to account, but it is found wanting.

Somehow, the supreme law of the land has been manipulated to allow a few people to recall MDC Alliance MPs voted into Parliament by thousands of supporters.

Our misery is not a result of the Southern African Development Community or a United States thing, but ours.

So is the obnoxious government. When we have had enough, we shall change it, as did the Zambians. The activists, however, must avoid making the same mistakes as Zanu-PF.

The people, at all times, must be consulted and not ordered, insulted, beaten or intimidated.

People must register to vote if they have had enough of Zanu-PF, otherwise we shall continue to cry.

Former Cabinet Minister Lazarus Dokora Steps Down

By A Correspondent- Former cabinet Minister Lazarus Dokora who was eying ZANU PF Mashonaland Central provincial chairman post to ouster the incumbent Kazembe has stepped down.

Dokora is now eyeing the vice Chairman post giving way to a surprise candidate to battle it out with Kazembe.

“Our candidate Dokora who had shown interest in the chairmanship race previously, has stepped down for a surprise candidate in the forthcoming provincial chairmanship post, this is because he has been too busy in mobilizing resources for the conference hence it needs his full attention,” the source said.

Dokora could neither confirm nor deny saying he was in a meeting and would call back soon after the meeting which he never did up to the time of this publication.

However, Dokora once reported an assassination attempt by Kazembe’s cabal when he clearly declared that he was interested in the post.

Businessman James Makamba is one of the emerging giant who has shown interest on the  post and has  been on the ground for a long time.

Latest On Macheke Gun Exchange

By A Correspondent- A gun shot exchange between two Macheke men has spilled into court.

However, it is the one who was hurt more and has been in intensive care for over a month who is accused of attempted murder by the complainant who trespassed into his property.

Cecil Ruzvidzo, 46 and Tashinga Mapetabere, 35, had an altercation which resulted in a shootout.

Following the fracas, Cecil had his stomach ripped open by gunshot wounds but he has been arrested and brought before the court charged with attempted murder.

He is admitted at a local hospital where is nursing stomach wounds he suffered after being shot.

His case was heard from his hospital bed.

His defence counsel Emmanuel Mukwewa of Mukwewa Law Chambers told the court that his client had not been given justice he deserves since his arrest and the complainant should be the one charged for attempted murder.

“Your Worship, it is my client who should be complaining about this incident since if you may see the wounds he sustained are unbearable.

“The complainant should be the one charged, and may he be granted bail,” he submitted.

The State did not oppose to bail.

Magistrate Dennis Mangosi granted Cecil bail as he was brought to court by way of summons.

He is expected back in court on November 30, for his trial.

Allegations are that on August 19, Cecil proceeded to Parking dam at Rippling Waters Farm in Macheke where the complainant Tashinga was fishing.

The State is alleging that upon arrival at the dam Cecil fired a shot using a Bruno double barrel shot gun serial numbers 432958 towards Tashinga.

As a result, Tashinga was reportedly hit on the head with a live round and sustained a gunshot wound which is a 5cm deep as illustrated by the medical affidavit.

A firearm which was used to shoot the complainant was also recovered.

Tashinga was medically examined on the head and a medical affidavit stating that he was hit by a sharp object was issued.

Botswana Orders Livestock Theft Inquiry

By A Correspondent- Botswana’s presidency has ordered an official inquiry into livestock theft on his country’s border with Zimbabwe, the government announced on Monday.

Acting President Slumber Tsogwane named a nine-member commission for the inquiry to be conducted in Bobirwa constituency, across the Tuli River in Matabeleland South which for several kilometres serves as the border between the two countries.

A statement accompanying the appointment of the commission said:

4. The terms of reference of the Commission of Inquiry shall be as follows —

(a) To establish the problem of livestock rustling in the Bobirwa villages along the Botswana/Zimbabwe border, and determine the extent of the problem;

(b) To establish how long the problem of livestock rustling in the area has been in existence, what causes or caused it, and who are the key players;

(c) To further establish, from the perspective of the community what was done to address the problem and any mitigating measures initiated by the community to deal with the problem;

(d) To establish the existence of any cross-border livestock rustling management/mitigation strategy by law enforcement agencies, and what gaps exist in that strategy;

(e) To establish what compromises the effectiveness of the management/mitigating strategy referred to above;

(f) To seek input from the community as to what the socio-economic, political, security risks, etc., that may result from the livestock rustling are; its consequences on the livelihood of people in the area; and the measures that can be put in place to mitigate these risks;

(g) To establish whether or not there has been a displacement of farmers in the area as a result of the livestock rustling and how it has affected the diplomatic relations of the two countries;

(h) To engage the Ambassador of Zimbabwe based in Botswana in recognition of being a critical stakeholder in the matter;
(i) Based on the findings from paragraphs (a) to (g) of the Terms of Reference, make appropriate and long lasting recommendations to His Excellency the President on the mitigation measures to address the problem of livestock rustling in some villages in the Bobirwa constituency along the Botswana/Zimbabwe border;

Tensions among communities on either side of the border have been a common feature over the last decade – but most caused by Botswana’s shoot-to-kill policy when Zimbabwean farmers’ livestock stray into its territory.

Botswana has defended the policy saying it is stopping the spread of foot and mouth disease.

Zim Senior Journalist Survives Horror Crash

By A Correspondent- Zimbabwean journalist and former editor of The Herald, Ray Mungoshi on Sunday night survived a horror crash in Gauteng province, South Africa.

Mungoshi said he was alone and driving towards Johannesburg when his Isuzu truck veered off the road and somersaulted in Randburg.

“The car is a write off, I am lucky to be alive,” he told NewsDay yesterday.

Mungoshi, who is now based in Bloemfontein, South Africa, said his car’s brakes failed and he found himself off the road and his car overturned.

He worked for the Zimbabwe Information Service in Bikita and Gutu before joining The Herald, where he became editor before leaving for the academia.

ZIFA Submits Fans Plea To CAF

By A Correspondent- ZIFA have made another bid to the Confederation of African Football (Caf) to have at least 5 000 fans allowed to watch the Group G World Cup qualifier against Ghana at the National Sports Stadium next month.

This comes on the backdrop of an application to have 10 000 fans watch the game against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana at the National Sports Stadium on September 3, which was thrown out by Caf.

This time around, Zifa spokesperson Xolisani Gwesela said they made an application to Caf which was accompanied by a government supporting letter.

However, Gwesela could not be drawn to reveal the contents of the government letter.

“We have made an application to Caf to have 5 000 fans allowed for the Ghana match. We are waiting for a response from Caf. In our application, we attached a government supporting letter,” Gwesela said.

Dismissing Zifa’s application for the game against Bafana Bafana, Caf said: “Caf analysed and assessed your request from a medical, stadium requirements compliance, and safety and security perspectives in your venue. Accordingly, a decision has been taken not to allow the presence of spectators in the aforementioned match.”

The National Sports Stadium got a waiver to host international matches without meeting all the prerequisites, probably on condition that the World Cup qualifiers would be played behind closed doors.

The stadium still has a number of outstanding issues that include the installation of bucket seats, refurbishment of a venue operations centre, improvement of the pitch itself, renovation of the B-Arena for training, electronic entrances to the stadium and general cleanliness of the facility.

Caf has made several calls to Zifa to attend to the outstanding issues but the owners of the facility, the government has been a major letdown.

In May, Caf okayed the National Sports Stadium for the World Cup qualifiers and earlier in April, the stadium was okayed to host the Africa Cup of Nation (Afcon) matches while Zifa were fined US$2 000 for the deplorable state of the facility.

In a circular last week Caf said the National Sports Stadium was one of the stadia that was cleared to host Group G matches.

Zanu Pf Factionalism Hots Up

By A Correspondent- Zanu-PF yesterday threatened to come down hard on the warring party factions after fights disrupted internal district elections at the weekend and yesterday.

The ruling party was last week forced to postpone polls to choose provincial executive members following the eruption of violence, and the latest fissures show the failure by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to unite the party since he took over the reins from his predecessor, the late Robert Mugabe in a November 2017 military coup.

The party’s district elections are being held at a time when factions reportedly aligned to Mnangagwa and his deputy, Constantino Chiwenga, are gearing for senior party posts ahead of provincial elections.

Following Sunday’s bloody fights in Harare, Manicaland, Mashonaland West and Midlands provinces, angry party youths on Sunday besieged the Manicaland provincial offices baying for provincial chairperson Mike Madiro’s blood.

Over 200 party members, including war veterans, reportedly spent Sunday night at the party headquarters in Mutare demanding that either Madiro or the party acting national political commissar Patrick Chinamasa addresses them.

Madiro was on Sunday whisked away by the police and State security agents assigned to him as the situation got tense.

Yesterday, sources told NewsDay that Madiro met Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa over the disturbances at a hotel in Mutare in a bid to try and contain the volatile situation.

Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Associations national political commissar Joel Mureremba, who was part of the protesters, said they would camp at the party headquarters until their issues were addressed by Chinamasa.

“I am surprised that in Burma Valley, we were forced to have a re-run because comrade Madiro’s candidates had lost,” he said.

“We cannot continue to sleep as the party is being destroyed by one person and that is Madiro. We are now demanding to be addressed by our acting political commissar (Chinamasa) because comrade Madiro has failed to address us. We are camping here at the party headquarters and we don’t fear hunger. In Mozambique, we could go for many days without eating anything.”

Zanu-PF Mutare district co-ordinating committee (DCC) secretary for youth Danmore Mambondiyani weighed in saying Madiro’s behaviour would result in the party failing to attract more membership to achieve the five million votes target.

“What chairman Madiro is doing will not give the party the intended five million votes, and we are not going to remain silent with the party being destroyed by one person. Everywhere, the structures are being manipulated,” he said.

“People, who are here at the party headquarters, are committed to the struggle and they have used their own resources to come from all the eight districts in the province. They are buying their own food and some are even struggling to get food, but they are committed to the struggle as they want the party to win in the 2023 elections.”

Madiro was not immediately available for comment.

But Zanu-PF acting national spokesperson Mike Bimha said the party did not believe in violence and would look into all cases and ensure that “necessary” disciplinary measures were instituted.

“We all know that when there are elections, people jostle for positions, but we don’t accept violence. Any violence of any sort is condemned and we would want to take disciplinary action,” he said.

“We can’t run a party with violent people. There could be elements in our party who are like that, but that is not the picture we want to create. That is not Zanu-PF because Zanu-PF stands for discipline and order.

“Elections have circulars on how things are done and some unruly elements take things into their own hands. We condemn it strongly and we would want to appeal to people wherever that is happening, and say that the disciplinary code should take its course.”

In Gokwe-Nembudziya constituency, local Member of Parliament and Gokwe North DCC chairman Justice Mayor Wadyajena confirmed that skirmishes took place during the voting process, adding that resultantly, some machete-wielding youths were
arrested.

Wadyajena said a driver and aide to one of the party’s senior officials in the district were arrested, adding that he had to go to the police station to rescue a party official who had been falsely accused by a rival camp. He said two officials linked to the senior party official paid admission of guilty fines.

“Ran to the police camp? I went as DCC chairman to solve the dispute between parties and in the process, secured the freedom of a kidnapped guy, falsely accused of hiding papers. The hired machete-wielding criminals were arrested and locked up. Gokwe North says no to violence and intimidation,” Wadyajena said.

In Wedza South constituency, Mashonaland East province, there was chaos in one of the wards after a secondary school teacher brought pupils to vote for him.

The elections had to be postponed.

In Mashonaland Central province, only part of Mt Darwin voted yesterday with the province’s seven districts snubbing the exercise alleging vote rigging.

Supporters told NewsDay that they were unable to vote during the week as they were at work and lamented “poor planning”.

Voting is likely to take place today in the remaining seven districts.

UNESCO Donates Broadcasting Equipment To Chimanimani Community Radio Station

radio

By A Correspondent- The new community radio station in Chimanimani reaffirms Government’s determination to open the media space and enhance freedom of expression, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said yesterday at the handover of donated broadcasting equipment.

The equipment was donated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to one of the 14 licensed community radio stations, the one based in Chimanimani.

Minister Mutsvangwa said in the past 12 months, the Government has made “tremendous progress” in realigning the legal and regulatory framework with constitutional provisions on the right of citizens to information and freedom of expression through the repeal of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA).

Government, she added, has since enacted the Freedom of Information Act and the Zimbabwe Media Commission Act, which together provide the legal framework to realise the rights of freedom of communication enshrined in the Constitution.

“The importance of building a knowledgeable and well informed citizenry needs not be emphasised.

“Our focus as the nation of Zimbabwe this year has been in laying the requisite infrastructural spinal cord as well as a policy and regulatory framework to enable unimpeded access and enjoyment of citizens’ right to know.

“The event here is yet another milestone which reaffirms Government’s commitment to enhance freedom of expression,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

She said the establishment of community radio stations will go a long way in addressing communication challenges during emergencies such as floods.

“The natural disaster-ravaged Chimanimani left scars, both physical and emotional, that continue to haunt people to this day.

“It calls for an efficient national communication system to best manage the negative and most deleterious effects of such natural disasters.

“The availability of a community radio station in this part of the country will go a long way in enhancing early warning systems against destructive natural phenomena such as we experienced with Cyclone Idai,” she said.

Speaking during the same function, Chimanimani District Administrator Mr Joseph Manyurapasi said the broadcasting equipment gives an opportunity for the district to showcase its endowments. The equipment will empower the community.

“This equipment will add to our information infrastructure in the district. As we know, we are in the information era and to have information is to be empowered. This equipment will go a long way in empowering the people of Chimanimani as the community radio will facilitate people to have access to information that relates to their needs in the district.

“In addition, it is an opportunity for the district to showcase its endowments through use of this communication media platform and thus appealing to the local and international markets in relation to the investment opportunities in the district.

“As a district that previously experienced natural disasters, the installation of this radio station for the community will instil positive thinking, positive attitudes and optimism among our communities by broadcasting information that will reorient people away from the traumas caused by natural calamities.

“This is essential for people to recover psychologically and for socio-economic development,” said Mr Manyurapasi.

Apart from handover of community radio equipment, there were other events in Chimanimani that included the International Day of Universal Access to Information as well as the launch of the Information For All Programme, which took place.

Several of those involved in information communication technology and media industries were present.-statemedia

Ultimatum For Command Agriculture Farmers

By A Correspondent- Farmers financed under Command Agriculture have until November 30 to deliver their maize to the Grain Marketing Board or be blacklisted so they can not access any more Government-guaranteed loans and face losing their offer letters and tenure documents and thus their farms.

The National Enhanced Agriculture Productivity Scheme (NEAPS), commonly known as Command Agriculture, requires farmers to repay their loans, usually in the form of deductions from their crop payments when they deliver.

The Financial Clearing Bureau then records their creditworthiness.

NEAPS was this year sponsored by the CBZ-Agroyield, which as a private banking scheme is baacked by a Government guarantee to banks that raise capital to lend to farmers to enhance local agricultural production through concessionary loans.

Government has assisted to ensure NEAPS is well funded with the ultimate goal of converting repayments from recoveries into a revolving fund, meaning that the money paid back this harvest can be relent to farmers to buy inputs for the next cropping cycle.

This would convert one-off arrangements into a permanent source of funding.

Last month the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Resettlement was expecting all farmers who benefited from Command Agriculture to ramp up deliveries and recoveries, Minister Dr Anxious Masuka said, so the proceeds can be rolled over to fund the forthcoming season.

Minister Masuka recently highlighted that farmers with outstanding debts will not be enrolled for the next season until they have made a repayment, and this needs to be done by November 30.

“For the avoidance of doubt, banks that lend to farmers who have not fulfilled the above, will be liable for any defaults. Additional measures will be taken and all national payment platforms will be activated to ensure repayments by defaulting farmers, including submission of names to the Financial Clearing Bureau,” said Minister Masuka.

Without a Government guarantee banks then have to assume the risk entirely themselves, and this was the sticking point that saw the Government moving in with guarantees so the banks could do their job.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry Dr John Basera said the Minister reserved the right to revoke offer letters for farmers who use their offer letters to the detriment of Government-supported programmes, including an intentional failure to settle loans.

“After November 30, we are seriously coming for those farmers defaulting. Farmers be warned.”

Command Agriculture was introduced by Government in 2016 to ensure national food security, accelerate import substitution and as a key driver to economic recovery.

It mainly benefits the A2 resettlement farmers and other farmers with the larger farms. The programme was also targeted at creating employment and uplifting livelihoods.

Command Agriculture has resulted in an increase in production of both maize and wheat and the ministry believes it is a catalyst to the attainment of Vision 2030 and realisation of the National Development Strategy 1.

So far the programme has registered success especially during the last season where over 1 million tonnes of maize was produced.

After initial success, last year the Government changed the model to bring in participation of the financial institutions such as CBZ, Agribank and Stanbic as part of the programme to create a permanent and normal financing arrangement.

Zimbabwe is expected to harvest 2,7 million tonnes of maize during the present summer cropping season, the highest yield in 20 years.

Success was also registered in wheat production during last year’s harvest when the country produced enough cereal to cover nine months’ supply and this harvest is expected with the modest carry-over stocks to see Zimbabwe managing without further imports.

Wheat production has been rising fast. In 2019 farmers produced 220 000 tonnes of wheat from 45 000 hectares but this winter more than 320 000 tonnes of the cereal are expected from the 66 400 hectares put under the crop.

“Eighty percent plus of this year’s winter wheat crop is coming from NEAPS,” said Dr Basera.

Meanwhile, Dr Basera said the next round of NEAPS will be funded partly through AFC and partly through CBZ backed by Government performance guarantees for the contracted farmers through Treasury.

“The scheme is targeting to establish 440 000 hactares. The target is 390 000 hectares of maize and 40 000 hectares soya bean,” he said.

Between January and June 30 last year, Tererati (Private) Limited is alleged to have bought forex using agents from the streets.

Vision Credit Source, which is a registered company, is also alleged to have used the same modus operandi to buy forex from the parallel market through its agents.

It is alleged that between January and June last year the company transferred $2 520 535 from its bank account into various EcoCash accounts before transferring it to various agents.

The agents would then allegedly buy forex on the streets.

All the suspected dealers are expected back in court tomorrow for bail applications. Regional magistrates Mrs Vongai Guwuriro, Mr Ngoni Nduna and Mr Turai Manwere, separately presided over the matters.

Nine New Judges To Be Sworn In

By A Correspondent- Nine new judges recommended by the Judicial Service Commission and accepted by President Mnangagwa for appointment as judges of the High Court will tomorrow take their judicial oaths.

The nine were among the 35 aspiring candidates that were interviewed to fill the vacant positions of the High Court after promotion of six senior High Court judges to the Supreme Court bench following consultations with the JSC as required by law.

Chief magistrate Mr Munamato Mutevedzi, Labour Court judge Justice Rogers Manyangadze Foroma, Mutare regional magistrate Chipo Annie-Lucy Mungwari, JSC deputy secretary Mr Elijah Makomo, Industry and Commerce Ministry’s legal affairs director Mr Never Katiyo, former Barclays Bank legal counsel Mr Joseph Chilimbe, Bulawayo-based lawyer Mr Bongani Ndlovu, chief law officer in the Attorney-General’s Office Mr Samuel Deme, who is visually-impaired and veteran Harare lawyer Mrs Catherine Kate Bachi-Muzawazi will be sworn in by Chief Justice Luke Malaba.

The JSC submits its recommended list to the President, who may assent to the names or ask the JSC to submit a fresh set of names.

While a recent amendment to the Constitution allows promotion of judges from the High Court to the Supreme and Constitutional Courts without further public interviews, these are still required for entry to the High Court bench.

The judiciary had seen a number of High Court judges moving to the Supreme Court to close the gap left by five judges that were moved up to the new Constitutional Court, now a stand-alone court.

Bulawayo Woman Spills Bedroom Secretes In Court

By A Correspondent- A Bulawayo woman has told a court that her man has resorted to pounding her with fists because his sexual organ did not have to stay power to give her a good time in bed.

Zanu PF MP Sued For Hit And Run Accident

MASVINGO – Zanu PF MP for Bikita East, Jonson Madhuku has been dragged to court by a 75-year-old man he hit and injured in a road accident that happened at Zimuto Camp in Masvingo in July, 2018.

Although court documents could not be immediately obtained, The Mirror understands that David Ndangeni is demanding about US$550 for an operation that needs to be carried out on his left leg.
Ndangeni confirmed the case and said that summons have since been served on Madhuku.

Madhuku also confirmed the case to The Mirror and said he helped Ndangeni with medical bills before and added that he only paid this out of compassion because the former was drunk and walking in the middle of the road with his earphones on when he was hit by the car.

Ndangeni who says that he got his hand paralsed after the accident accused Madhuku of having for the last three years refused to pay for the operation to have a metal rod placed in his left leg.

Ndangeni who stays at the Ministry of Transport quarters along Zimuto Road also accused Madhuku of failing to appear in court despite serving him three subpoenas since May 2021.
“Ndangeni was drunk when the accident happened.

He was running in the middle of the road. I paid for his medication and other expenses when he went to Parirenyatwa Hospital in 2018. I helped him out of the good of my heart and as an elderly person. He has served me with papers to appear in court and I am waiting for the court date,” said Madhuku.

Acting Masvingo Police spokesperson Lloyd Masundira said he cannot comment on a case before the courts.

There are allegations that Madhuku who was driving an unregistered Ford Ranger failed to stop at the scene of accident. He allegedly stopped at the High Court in the CBD which is about 2km from where the accident happened.

“I was taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital and later transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital for medication but I cannot afford bus fare for regular checkups.

“Doctors wanted US$550 for them to put an iron rod in my left foot but Madhuku has been avoiding me since 2018.
“I lost my job as a security guard after the accident and can no longer provide for my family. My wife sells vegetables in town. I am struggling to buy pain killers and I cannot walk or do any tasks as I now use one hand,” said Ndangeni.- Masvingo Mirror

Zanu PF Youths Demand Cash From Vendors

Mnangagwa Warns Of Job Losses

LPRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday warned of severe job losses and possible deaths if the country does not immediately act to deal with effects of climate change.

Mnangagwa made the call on his official Twitter handle ahead of next month’s United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) to be hosted by the United Kingdom in Glasgow, Scotland.

He said Zimbabwe could not afford to fail to immediately deal with the issue of climate change as failure to do so would be very costly for the country.

“If climate change continues at its current rate, thousands of Zimbabweans will lose their jobs, homes or even their lives. Ahead of COP26, Zimbabwe has now committed to reducing emissions by 40% before 2030. The time for words is over — we must act now,” Mnangagwa tweeted.

Zimbabwe has over 90% unemployment rate with millions now relying on informal trade to eke out a living.

Recently, Mnangagwa met the United Kingdom ambassador Melanie Robinson where she stated that Zimbabwe was one of the countries that are deemed vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

The Zimbabwean government has been hard hit by an economic crisis that senior officials have blamed on drought, sanctions and floods, among other reasons.

But critics have also accused the Mnangagwa administration of corruption, saying it has affected the country’s economic turnaround strategies.

Cape Town and Stockholm Team Up to Boost Women in Tech Business

By Dorrothy Moyo | South Africa’s female startup business penetration, amounts to 26% of industry [i]. What’s more, according to the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, only 10% of the country’s startups have at least one female founder.  This is just one of the many examples of gender inequalities that pervade the tech sector of both countries. To address these and other issues such as the lack of mentorship for women in tech, the scarcity of investment into female-owned startups, and barriers to entry due to traditional gender roles, Cape Town / Stockholm Connect (CSC) will be hosting a solution-oriented Women in Tech webinar on Thursday, 30 September 2021.

Female-owned startups are vastly outnumbered by male owned start-ups. This is due to the many structural inequalities that pervade in the tech sector and society at large. Access to venture capital, networks and mentorship.  Barriers to entry due to traditional gender roles are some examples of obstacles facing female start up entrepreneurs. To address these issues and identify solutions Cape Town/ Stockholm Connect (CSC) will be hosting a Women in Tech webinar on Thursday, 30 September 2021.

Launched earlier this year, CSC is a co-creation platform with the aim of strengthening ties between the tech industry in both countries.

Topics to be tackled at the event include the latest trends in technology on both continents, whether female tech entrepreneurs receive sufficient support from industries and government, as well as what can be done to create a more equal situation. With the convenors committed to ensuring that the event delivers measurable results, matchmaking and/or networking opportunities will be taking place during the breakout sessions, the foci of which will be raising capital, scaling multi-nationally, and the female quotient.

It is envisaged that, in the long term, the discussions arising from the event will lead to intensified networking and cross-border collaboration between Swedish and South African female-owned startups and entrepreneurs.

“I hope that women tech entrepreneurs from Sweden and South Africa start a conversation that leads to change and hopefully concrete business opportunities too. The digital world sees no borders, we build it together, let’s make sure that we make it gender equal!” says Håkan Juholt, the Swedish Ambassador to South Africa.

Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities in the City of Cape Town, Alderman James Vos, adds: “Connecting Cape Town’s startup businesses with other markets across the globe is an important aspect of growing our local economy and creating opportunities for growth and job creation. Cape Town is the startup capital of Africa and, to build on the possibilities we possess, we need to connect with cities such as Stockholm and share knowledge and insights. Cape Town’s tech industry has boomed in recent years and is on the precipice of even greater things. Last year, about R1.2 billion in disclosed investments were pumped into tech start-ups in the metro, across 46 deals – the highest in the country. But for the Mother City’s tech space to realise its full potential, we must strive to create a more diverse sector that really empowers women.”

“With Cape Town being the ‘Tech Capital of Africa’, it has an important role to play in fostering inclusivity and bringing more women into the tech sector. Although some strides have been made to advance women in tech, more needs to be done, which is why we fully support initiatives such as these. I strongly believe that this will not only help introduce new viewpoints and ideas to the sector but will also impact both countries’ potential for economic growth,” concludes Wesgro’s Acting CEO, Yaw Peprah.

Court Rules Against Biti’s Client

HARARE- Tendai Biti’s client who  was seeking to stop a former business partner from selling residential stands on a disputed upmarket piece of land in Borrowdale, has lost his court case. The development comes after Mr George Katsimberis and his company Coolfitch Investments approached the superior court challenging a High Court decision to strike off the court roll his urgent application for lack of merit in a judgment Justice Joseph Mafusire expressed concern over the contractor hiding the fact that another judge had already ruled on the matter. Through his legal counsel Mr Tendai Biti, Mr Katsimberis and his company had sued former business partner Mr Kenneth Sharpe and owner of Pokugara Properties, along with Harare couple Erasmus and Sibusiwe Chindove who bought a residential stand from Pokugara.

However, his bid to overturn the decision of the court of lower level slumped again yesterday, when a three-judge panel of Justices Chinembiri Bhunu, Hlekani Mwayera and Samuel Kudya dismissed the appeal. In its ruling the court agreed with Mr Sharpe’s legal counsel Advocate Tawanda Zhuwarara that Mr Katsimberis had no legal basis to stop Pokugara properties from selling its land. This is another major development in the dispute between Mr Katsimberis and Mr Sharpe and marks the second time the Supreme Court has ruled against Mr Katsimberis. In 2018 the Supreme Court threw out yet another appeal by Mr Katsimberis where he wanted to stop Mr Sharpe and Pokugara properties from selling property that belonged to them.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court also confirmed that the High Court was correct to order Mr Katsimberis to pay costs on a punitive scale because of the bad pleadings he had filed in the High Court and the fact that he had also hidden the fact that there were previous court decisions where he had lost.

Mr Katsimberis lawyer Advocate Tererai Mafukidze, instructed by Tendai Biti Law Chambers, submitted that while Mr Katsimberis wanted an interdict, the facts did not warrant the granting of such an order. This marks the end to a long saga where Mr Katsimberis wanted to get an order stopping Pokugara from selling its properties to the public. Mr Katsimberis had wanted to interdict Pokugara from transferring the property to the Chindove couple until the dispute between him and Mr Sharpe was resolved.

In the lower court Justice Mafusire ruled that the relief Mr Katsimberis sought was not urgent and struck the matter off the roll without hearing arguments on the merit, upholding the preliminary objections raised by Mr Sharpe’s legal counsel who brought to the attention of the judge that the matter was once dealt with by another judge, but was being smuggled back to court disguised as a completely different matter. He ruled that Mr Katsimberis’ application should thus fail since the matter has been dealt with and criticised Mr Katsimberis conduct saying he deserved censure.

In that case, Mr Katsimberis made a monumental blunder when he omitted material facts surrounding his case, with Justice Mafusire saying if that was deliberate then that was the height of misconduct.

“No court can relate to cause of action on the merits when some material facts surrounding it have been concealed from it,” said Justice Mafusire then.

“In no way could (Mr) Katsimberis move the court to deal with the issue of an interdict in these circumstances, when concealed somewhere in his memory box is a whole folder on the judgment of Muzenda J, but which he does not open to share with the court. “I cannot even begin to emphasise the folly and imprudence of a litigant’s failure to take the court into his or her confidence.” – State Media/Additional Reporting

“Sanctions Against Setback” – A Feeble Excuse Cum Insult Cum Tool for Oppression

Mokgweetsi. Masisi

By Nomusa Garikai | “Sanctions against Zimbabwe are a setback to stability in our region. Botswana therefore calls on the international community to end sanctions against Zimbabwe,” said President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana addressing 76th session of the UN General Assembly.

This is music to President Mnangagwa and his Zanu PF cronies’ ears but it is rubbing hot chillis into eyes of every long suffering Zimbabwean out there.

There a mountain of evidence proving beyond all reasonable doubt that the root cause of Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown are 41 years and counting of gross mismanagement, rampant corruption and the rank lawlessness that have earned the country the pariah state status.

A report from Zimbabwe’s own Auditor General revealed that US$890 million of donor funds to help with the corona virus has either been looted or otherwise wasted. Zimbabwe is losing a staggering US$1.2 billion per year to gold smugglers alone.

Ever since the imposition of the sanctions the regime has repeatedly failed to put a definitive figure on the financial loses brought on by the sanctions. The truth is the financial loses are but a tiny fraction to the financial loses caused by corruption and mismanagement.

Indeed, soon after the West imposed sanctions, Mugabe came up with his “Look East” policy which supposedly meant to counter the sanctions. And ever since the regime has boasted of various measure to guarantee national economic prosperity regardless of the sanctions.

The reality on the ground has been one of economic decline before the sanctions were imposed and the decline has continued after the sanctions were imposed. During the 2008 to 2013 GNU when Zanu PF was forced to abandon some of the party’s disastrous economic policies the economy registered a 12% recovery in 2009 up from minus 6% the previous year although the sanctions remain in place. All proving that sanctions are NOT the root cause of Zimbabwe’s economic and political mess!

Indeed, Zimbabwe has been stuck with this corrupt, incompetent and tyrannical Zanu PF dictatorship for 41 years and counting because the party rigged elections. Ever since the late 1990s Zimbabweans have been calling for democratic change, changes to stop Zanu PF rigging the elections.

The people have risked life and limb to elect Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends on the promise the party would deliver the democratic changes the nation has been dying for all these years. Sadly, MDC leaders have proven to be corrupt and incompetent and have failed to bring about even one democratic change.

Still, every Zimbabwean with half a brain knows that to get out of the mess we find ourselves in, the country must implement the democratic reforms to guarantee free, fair and credible elections.

It is patronising, to say the least, SADC leaders to be parroting Zanu PF propaganda of blaming sanctions for Zimbabwe’s ills when they know Zanu PF corruption and mismanagement are the real causes.

We, in Zimbabwe welcome all the help we can get in our fight to end the Zanu PF dictatorship and will accept and respect those nations and individuals who refuse to lift a finger to help. What we will not accept is the insults of those who decide to side with the Zanu PF thugs. We do not accept Zanu PF’s denial of our basic freedoms and rights.

By denying the 3 million Zimbabweans in the diaspora the vote, Zanu PF is rigging the 2023 elections in advance and elections must be condemned in advance. The attempt to link the denial of the diaspora vote to sanctions is an insult because the right to vote is not a privilege or bargaining chip.

It is us, the people of Zimbabwe, the ruling party, the opposition and us the ordinary people, who must share the blame for the country finding itself stuck in this economic and political mess for 41 years. Still there are some outsiders who have helped us land in this mess and that is intolerable especially from those nations who have routines held free, fair and credible elections and therefore have no excuse for giving a thumbs-up to Zanu PF rigged elections!

The root cause of Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown and political instability is the country’s failure to hold free, fair and credible elections – the west imposed sanctions are just a feeble excuse and scapegoat. – SOURCE: zsdemocrats.blogspot.com

Horror As Veld Fire Burns Grandpa To Death

Chivhu – A 77-year-old man caught fire while relieving himself in a bush in Nhema Village under Chief Mutekedza on Sunday and he was burnt beyond recognition.
Julius Takaendesa Gwapedza’s body was discovered after a search, Mash East Provincial Police Spokesperson Misheck Denhere said.

Sources said that Gwapedza had visited Nhema Village in Sadza to attend the memorial service of his mother. At around 7am he went into a near-by bush to relieve himself.

He was suddenly engulfed by a bush fire and a young girl saw him as he fought hard to put out the fire that was already on his clothes. The girl sent a mobile text message to the village head Canaan Makone (55).

Zanu PF Smuggles Back Indigenous Policy, Plans To Bar Foreigners From Owning Businesses

By A Correspondent- Zanu PF has revived consultations on its indigenisation policy which would see foreign nationals barred from operating businesses in some sectors of the economy.

The programme is being spearheaded by the party’s secretary of indigenisation and economic empowerment, Mike Bimha.

Bimha said the governing party wants Zimbabweans “to take charge, we must fully participate in all the sectors”.

In the proposed policy set to be launched ahead 0f the 2023 elections, foreigners will be barred from operating in certain sectors, including the lucrative artisanal gold mining and hair saloons.

In 2016, the Zanu PF government was forced to abandon the economic empowerment law that sought to transfer majority shares of foreign-owned firms to black Zimbabweans.

Chipinge Informal Traders Lament Over COVID-19 Lockdowns

By Munengwa Desdemona| Informal traders have lamented how the prolonged lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted negatively on their businesses with low sales and closure of Zimbabwe borders being cited as the major impediments to continued operations.

Since Zimbabwe reported its COVID-19 case in March 2020, government has been shifting from a hard lockdown to a relaxed and this has affected informal traders who thrive on daily sales to put food on the table.

One informal trader at Checheche growth point, Clara Mlambo has reported that since COVID-19 started her business has been going down as she is sometimes forced to use her capital to buy food for the household.

When the situation was normal, she would use her daily profits to buy food and re-invest the capital to keep her business running.

In an interview with Vemuganga Community Radio, Mlambo said, “since the beginning of COVID-19, my business has not been performing well, this is worsened by the fact that sometimes our wares are seized by the Council and at times the police would arrest us for breaching lockdown restrictions.  This has affected me as I do not know how to fend for my family, my husband is late and I have three children who look after me.”

Another woman who sell vegetables, Rejoice Chipanera said she had to close her business in the hope that she would find a job but without education, it has not been an easy task.

She returned to her informal business but has stock has dwindled yet she does not have money to re-stock.

“These days I barely sell even USD10 and there is very low business and sometimes I would lose the few cents to the council who would be threatening to seize my order,” lamented Chipanera.

85 percent of Zimbabweans are in the informal sector and affected by lockdowns instituted by government to contain the spread of the deadly pandemic.
