Chamisa Challenges Mnangagwa To End Zupco Monopoly

By- CCC leader Nelson Chamisa has said the Zanu PF government should immediately end the Zupco monopoly and address the country’s transport system.

Posting on Twitter CCC said Zupco has failed.

“End the ZUPCO monopoly Allow private players Introduce set timetables Refurbish bus stops Stop harassing transporters Maintain road networks Modernize the rail network Consult citizens,” CCC tweeted Wednesday.

This week the Zimbabwe Union of Drivers and Conductors (ZUDAC) also said there was an urgent need by the government to end the Zimbabwe United Passengers Company (ZUPCO) monopoly.

ZUDAC president Frederick Maguramhinga said they wanted the dialogue between transport operators and the Government over the ZUPCO monopoly which he claimed has caused the shortage of transport in the country, especially in urban areas. Said Maguramhinga:
The crisis in the transport sector has taken another level. There is a stalemate between the government and operators. There is no platform to discuss this because the door is closed.
The SI 83 of 2020 states that no one shall run public transport outside the Zupco franchise. The birth of this arrangement wasn’t inclusive.
It was imposed on operators. We were not given a chance to speak for our members. This system is surviving by force.
The Government enforced ZUPCO’s transport monopoly in 2020 through Statutory Instrument (SI) 83 of 2020.
It said the move was aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus but critics argue that the ban on private buses and kombis was meant to manage the public transport sector following the January 2019 fuel riots.

In January 2019, transport operators pulled their vehicles off the roads in protest of a 150 per cent fuel price hike that was announced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The ZUPCO monopoly has, however, brought immense suffering to commuters who have to spend several hours standing in the rain, heat or cold waiting for the woefully inadequate rickety ZUPCO buses.

Khupe To Campaigning For CCC In Mat North

By- Former MDC-T deputy president, Thokozani Khupe has been deployed to lure 2023 election votes for the CCC party in Bubi and Umguza districts in Matabeleland.

The former Deputy Prime Minister trekked Bulawayo and Matabeleland provinces urging citizens to register during the mobile voter registration exercise that ended on 30 April 2022.

Khupe was working with provincial CCC leaders and the party’s interim vice president, Welshman Ncube.

This comes after she announced that she had joined CCC following her acrimonious departure from the MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora.

Khupe’s spokesperson, Ntando Ndlovu, told CITE that the former trade unionist had been tasked to mobilise rural voters by CCC leadership in Harare. Said Ndlovu:

She’s been deployed to Bubi and Umguza as part of the party’s rural mobilisation strategy. That’s where the focus will be going forward.

In Bulawayo, she teamed up with other senior opposition leaders and they toured several western suburbs urging Bulawayo residents to register to vote.

She has also teamed up with other leaders in Bubi and Umguza in Matabeleland North and Plumtree in Matabeleland South where they were doing a similar exercise.

Ndlovu claimed that Khupe was working well with the majority of senior leaders of CCC, despite sentiments from some members, especially in Bulawayo Province, who were opposed to her entry into the party. Said Ndlovu:

The sentiments that you are referring to are coming from staff riders and gatekeepers who are incapable of mobilizing citizens and the electorate.

They then, therefore, resort to issuing reckless and senseless statements in the media to get attention, for which they have an insatiable appetite. Dr Khupe remains unshaken and clear about the task at hand.

… Khupe has used the door-to-door campaigns to urge the citizenry to vote for CCC and Advocate Nelson Chamisa ahead of next year’s elections.

The citizens have generally welcomed the message that Dr Khupe has carried to them and they have applauded her decision to throw her weight behind Adv Chamisa.

As a former trade unionist, Dr Khupe is really humbled by the amount of positive feedback she’s receiving from the ground.

DeMbare Eye Sacked Caps United Forward

THERE is immediate relief for sacked CAPS United striker Clive Augusto with Dynamos closing in on the forward just two days after he was shown the exit at the Green Machine.

Augusto, along with five other players, who include Rodwell Chinyengetere, Ronald “Rooney” Chitiyo, Dennis Dauda, Devon Chafa and goalkeeper Simba Chinani, were released by Makepekepe on Monday.

Chafa, Chinyengetere and Chitiyo have since been pardoned by the CAPS United hierarchy and are set to rejoin the team.

This followed an industrial action which resulted in CAPS United’s league match against Cranborne Bullets being delayed by about 45 minutes as the boycott almost forced the cancellation of the fixture at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Predictably Makepekepe lost the encounter with the players’ body language still in a rebellious state. And despite owing them winning bonuses in two matches as well as their April salaries, CAPS United management reacted by dropping the axe on the quintet whom they accused of leading the strike.

While the sacked players, who have not been pardoned by the Green Machine, will be frozen out of action for the next four or so weeks before the mid-season transfer window opens, Augusto is already set to join the Glamour Boys whom he could start training with as soon as next week.

The highly-rated striker has failed to assert himself into the Makepekepe system despite the trust he has earned from coach Lloyd Chitembwe.

But there is no doubting his potential and he will be joining his former boss Tonderai Ndiraya under whose tutelage at Ngezi Platinum some four years ago, flourished well.

Augusto was part of that solid Ngezi Platinum Stars outfit which went for more than 25 games without conceding defeat at home between 2017 and 2018 under Ndiraya.

The striker only left the Mhondoro team to join Chicken Inn in 2019, some months after Ndiraya’s romance with Ngezi Platinum ended.

Augusto scored 14 goals in 17 matches for the Bulawayo team in the first half of the season before attracting interest from South Africa with Maritzburg United managing to land him.

But so high were the standards he set in that first half of the marathon that no other player managed to score more than him and he was also rewarded with a place in the soccer stars’ list.

But somehow, the big striker couldn’t make an impact in the South African league and he returned back home to join Makepekepe where he has enjoyed game time but the goals have somehow deserted him.

He will be welcome at DeMbare where strikers are struggling to get into the groove despite the team doing well in the league.

Of course, Augusto and his colleagues have since approached the players’ representative board, the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ), and a protracted legal battle involving Makepekepe is in the offing.

But thus far he will leave the matter as he prepares to engage into talks with the But thus far he will leave the matter as he prepares to engage into talks with the Glamour Boys who are riding high in the league where they top the standings with 29 points to their name, two above closest pursuers Chicken Inn.- DeMbare.com

Caps United Saga: Jere Forgives Trio

Less than 24 hours after saying he doesn’t want to see the six CAPS United players dismissed for Sunday’s strike, club president Farai Jere has pardoned three of those.

Six Makepekepe players – Devon Chafa, Clive Augusto, Rodwell Chinyengetere, Simba Chinani, Ronald Chitiyo and Dennis Dauda were shown the exit door for allegedly masterminding the strike that nearly resulted in the cancellation of their league match against Cranborne Bullets, which they lost 0-2.

But just a day after declaring that CAPS has shut the door completely on the six, Jere has pardoned three of them- Chafa, Chitiyo and Chinyengetere.

“So far only three players have been released
after further investigations showed that some of
the players that were fingered as ring leaders
actually played a big part in trying to diffuse the
flames,” reads a statement from the club.

“We did internal investigations, got hold of a new
piece of information which helped us to get a
clear and full picture. So we decided to pardon
Rodwell (Chinyengetere), Devon Chafa) and
Ronald (Chitiyo); and part ways with the other players.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

About Malaria Control

As World Malaria Day approaches, more than 1 million children in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi have received one or more doses of the world’s first malaria vaccine, thanks to a pilot programme coordinated by WHO. The malaria vaccine pilots, first launched by the Government of Malawi in April 2019, have shown that the RTS,S/AS01 (RTS,S) vaccine is safe and feasible to deliver, and that it substantially reduces deadly severe malaria.

These findings paved the way for the historic October 2021 WHO recommendation for the expanded use of RTS,S among children living in settings with moderate to high malaria transmission. If widely deployed, WHO estimates that the vaccine could save the lives of an additional 40 000 to 80 000 African children each year.

More than US$ 155 million has been secured from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance to support the introduction, procurement and delivery of the malaria vaccine for Gavi-eligible countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

WHO guidance is available to countries as they consider whether and how to adopt RTS,S as an additional tool to reduce child illness and deaths from malaria.

“As a malaria researcher in my early career, I dreamed of the day we would have an effective vaccine against this devastating disease,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “This vaccine is not just a scientific breakthrough, it’s life-changing for families across Africa. It demonstrates the power of science and innovation for health. Even so, there is an urgent need to develop more and better tools to save lives and drive progress towards a malaria-free world.”

Prospects for new interventions
RTS,S is a first-generation vaccine that could be complemented in the future by other vaccines with similar or higher efficacy. WHO welcomes progress in the development of R21/Matrix-M and other malaria vaccine candidates in early clinical development. The successful completion of clinical trials for these vaccines will be important to assess their safety and efficacy profiles. WHO also welcomes the news from BioNTech, manufacturer of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, that it aims to develop a malaria vaccine using mRNA technology.

In the field of vector control, a number of new tools and technologies have been submitted to WHO for evaluation. Should they demonstrate efficacy in controlling the disease, WHO will formulate new recommendations or amend existing ones to support their deployment. These include, for example, new types of insecticide-treated nets, spatial mosquito repellents, gene-drive approaches and sugar baits designed to attract and kill Anopheles mosquitoes.

There are also new medicines in the pipeline. WHO welcomes the recent approval by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration of dispersible tablets of single-dose tafenoquine for the prevention of P. vivax malaria among children. Tafenoquine has also been approved for use in adults by the US Federal Drug Administration and by drug regulatory bodies in other countries, including Brazil, Peru and Thailand. As a single dose, tafenoquine is expected to support patient adherence to treatment. The current standard of care requires a 7- or 14-day course of medication.

A number other antimalarial medicines with new modes of action are being developed for the treatment of uncomplicated and severe malaria. Ganaplacide-Lumefantrine, currently in a Phase II clinical trial, is the first non-artemisinin combination therapy and could be an asset in fight against emerging drug-resistant malaria in Africa.

In addition to drug resistance, WHO has reported other pressing threats in the fight against malaria, such as mosquito resistance to insecticides, an invasive malaria vector that thrives in urban and rural areas, and the emergence and spread of mutated P. falciparum parasites that are undermining the effectiveness of rapid diagnostic tests. Innovation in tools and strategies will be critical to contain these threats, together with a more strategic use of the tools that are available today.

More investment needed
According to the 2021 World malaria report, global progress in reducing malaria cases and deaths has slowed or stalled in recent years, particularly in countries hardest hit by the disease. The report notes the need for continued innovation in the research and development of new tools if the world is to achieve the 2030 targets of the WHO malaria strategy.

Funding for malaria-related research and development reached just over US$ 619 million in 2020. An average annual R&D investment of US$ 851 million will be needed in the period 2021–2030.

Making better use of the tools we have now
Reaching global malaria targets will also require innovations in the way that currently available tools are deployed. Through the “ High burden to high impact” approach, launched by WHO and the RBM Partnership to End Malaria in 2018, countries hardest hit by malaria have been collecting and analysing malaria data to better understand the geographical spread of the disease.

Instead of applying the same approach to malaria control everywhere, they are considering the potential impact of tailored packages of interventions informed by local data and the local disease setting.

These analyses will enable countries to use available funds in a more effective, efficient and equitable way.

Mnangagwa, Tagwirei Looting Scam Exposed

Tinashe Sambiri|Passengers in the country are suffering as a result of Emmerson Mnangagwa and Kuda Tagwirei’s scandal at ZUPCO.

Mnangagwa and his blue-eyed boy Tagwirei are accused of looting State funds via ZUPCO.

On Tuesday Citizens’ Coalition For Change spokesperson Advocate Fadzayi Mahere exposed Mnangagwa and Tagwirei’s looting scam:

“Remember when Tagwirei’s company purchased 162 #ZUPCO buses at US$58,900 each & sold them to Govt for US$212,962 each?

Millions were looted. Now there aren’t enough public buses & the people are stranded.

Zimbabwe is not poor. It’s poorly managed.

We need new leaders,” Mahere wrote on Facebook.

Zimbabwe Union of Drivers and Conductors (ZUDAC) president, Fredrick Maguramhinga, quoted by NewsDay, pleaded with Government to end the Zimbabwe United Passengers Company (ZUPCO) monopoly.

Maguramhinga argues the ZUPCO monopoly has caused the shortage of transport in the country.

“The crisis in the transport sector has taken another level. There is a stalemate between the government and operators. There is no platform to discuss this because the door is closed.

Highlanders To Face Disciplinary Action Over Mandava Violence

Highlanders have been summoned to appear before a Premier Soccer League (PSL) disciplinary committee on Tuesday following scenes of violence and hooliganism that led to the abandonment of their away league game to FC Platinum at Mandava Stadium on April 23.

The match was called off in the 82nd minute as Highlanders fans invaded the pitch after referee Kuzivamwari Jaravaza awarded a penalty to FC Platinum when Peter Muduhwa hacked down Walter Musona inside the box.

That did not go down well with the visitors’ fans who felt the match official was biased against Highlanders. They were also arguing that the incident had happened outside the box.

PSL spokesperson Kudzai Bare yesterday confirmed that the Bulawayo giants will appear before the league’s tribunal to answer to charges of breaching Order 31 of the league’s rules and regulations.

“We summoned Highlanders to appear for a hearing. They will appear before the disciplinary committee on May 10,” Bare said.

Order 31 states that it is an act of misconduct if a club’s supporters…. 1.13 “…. misbehave in any manner whatsoever, inside or outside a ground before, during and after a match, no matter on which ground the match is played.  Without derogating from the generality of what constitutes misbehaviour on the part of supporters, the following are specifically declared to be acts of misbehaviour: 31.1.13.1 Invasion or attempted invasion of the field of play, save for reasons of crowd safety. 31.1.13.2 Causing the abandonment or attempting to cause abandonment of a match. 31.1.13.3 Throwing or attempting to throw missiles, bottles, and other objects, whether potentially harmful or dangerous or not, onto the pitch, or at any person. 31.1.13.8 Maliciously damaging or attempting to damage any property at the ground.”

Highlanders have in turn blamed the police for the mayhem while the law enforcement agents said they arrested 15 people in Zvishavane for causing the mayhem, which spilled to the city centre from Mandava Stadium.

The league has implored Zifa to rein in match officials who bring the game of football into disrepute.

Low Salaries Pushing Journalists To Be Corrupt

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services deputy minister Kindness Paradza has said the low salaries being paid to journalists were forcing them to resort to corruption.

Addressing participants at the World Press Freedom Day celebrations at the National University of Science and Technology in Bulawayo yesterday, Paradza said: “Salaries in the media sector are not attractive at all, actually across the whole  industry, even government, the lecturers in tertiary institutions are also not happy.  No one is happy including journalists.

“We should create an industry which is ethical and be satisfied with our incomes such that we do not lose our moral fabric as journalists. As it is, the media is now more lucrative to individual journalists than the institutions they work for.

“I say that because there are journalists who are selling the profession, selling stories and are receiving bribes. During our time we used to call it cheque book journalism, but it has now changed to brown envelope because it is now cash. Because of inflation, it is now cash and our journalists are now killing the profession by accepting bribes.”

Paradza also rebuked journalists for political polarisation saying some journalists were becoming more “political than politicians themselves”.

Meanwhile, in a statement to commemorate World Press Freedom Day former chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Settlement Chikwinya bemoaned proliferation of fake news and misinformation by citizen journalists, which  he said was affecting the viability of established print platforms.

“Established print news outlets have seen print runs coming down from as high as 90 000 copies per day to a low of under 5 000 copies a day.  This calls for swift adaptation to the new world order under technological realities,” Chikwinya said.

In a statement, African Editors Forum chairperson Jovial Rantao called for the end of persecution of journalists by governments for simply doing their job.

“Journalism is under siege from tough pre- and post-COVID-19 economic conditions which have led to smaller newsrooms, lower circulations, lower advertising revenue and, indeed, the death of some publications. Journalism is under siege from repressive governments which are responsible for the attacks on journalists, detentions, harassment. Just the other day, 14 journalists from Somalia were arrested while on assignment.

“Female journalists, in particular, are under siege from those who harass them in cyberspace. Women journalists are exposed to alarming additional risks that range from discrimination, sexual harassment and cyber-harassment to rape threats, sexual attacks, rape and even murder. Journalism is under siege from governments which have used COVID-19 as a cover to restrict media freedom,” Rantao said.

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) also decried the continued detention and arrests of journalists whenever they expose administrative malpractices, corruption and human rights abuses in the country.

ZACC Descends On Mutare Man Accused Of Smuggling ‘Mabhero’

A man from Mutare suspected to be the mastermind of a syndicate smuggling second-hand clothes into Zimbabwe from Mozambique, Edward Muhamba, has seen his property and trucks worth US$500 000 frozen by the High Court until he explains how he acquired them.

The High Court gave him 30 days to explain in a sworn statement, including receipts and other proof, how he acquired the two commercial properties, a house and five trucks or risk having the lot forfeited to the State. He has never declared any income from employment or business for tax purposes.

Muhamba had his trucks impounded by the police on previous occasions while ferrying allegedly smuggled second-hand clothes. In one of the cases, police chose to arrest two detectives who had impounded his vehicle laden with 142 bales of clothes on charges of criminal abuse of office and used him as a State witness.

Last year, Muhamba was part of a gang that was picked up for allegedly fighting over smuggling routes in Mutare. Investigations by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) implicate him in smuggling of bales of second-hand clothes, money laundering and unlawful dealing in diamonds. So now he must explain how he amassed his wealth within a short space of time.

Muhamba (39), according to preliminary investigations, has never been employed by a reputable company, neither does he pay tax to the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority for any known business. Good incomes tend to come from a good job or a good business or both.

The Prosecutor General, acting on ZACC instructions, successfully obtained a court order freezing Muhamba’s known assets last week.

The same order, issued by Justice Pisirayi Kwenda, compels Muhamba to file a written explanation on how he acquired the following assets:

Stand 11708 Beira Corridor 2 Mutare, worth US$25 000;

Commercial stand 12 Muduna Crescent, Nyamakate Industrial area in Mutare, valued at US$250 000;

975 Chikanga Phase One, Mutare, worth US$100 000;

Hino Ranger truck registration number ABK3205, valued at US$12 000;

Hino truck registration number ABK 1931, valued at US$20 000;

Hino Ranger truck registration number ABR 0066, valued at US$20 000; and

Toyota Hilux registration number AEL 0648, valued at US$45 000.

Justice Kwenda wants Muhamba to submit the written explanation to the head of ZACC’s Asset Forfeiture and Recovery Unit within 30 days of service of the order.

Receipts and other supporting documentation should be attached to the report to prove the legitimacy of the wealth. Failure to give a satisfactory explanation may result in the assets being forfeited to the State, as tainted property.

Clergyman persecuted for political and social conviction

By A Correspondent| Pastor Samuel Masunda is a clergyman who is being persecuted for his own political conviction and belief in human rights.

He has been at loggerheads with the governing authorities in Harare for dabbling in political activities and promoting human rights.

He has always been threatened by the dreaded central intelligence agency officials that men of the cloth must confine themselves to the pulpit or else be treated like opposition politicians…

In Zimbabwe, being treated as an opposition activist means frequent visits to the dreaded remand prisons, torture, and deaths.

To further compound the already dire situation, Masunda has been advocating for the rights of the LGBTQ community, a society which is being shunned upon in the greater Zimbabwean society.

Masunda has always stated that the broader Zimbabwe community should be tolerant to people with divergent political, social, and sexual convictions.

In an interview with this publication, Masunda urged local society to be accommodative to differences.

“The gay and lesbian community in Zimbabwe has to hide their sexual identity…they suffer discrimination and exclusion, and, in most instances, they suffer violent attacks, and this has resulted in permanent fear and loneliness,” he said.

Pastor Masunda said most of the LGBTQ society often suffer from poor mental health.

And it is that critical introspection into society which has got him at loggerheads with the authorities in the country.

“They have always labelled me as a gay advocate politician masquerading as a clergyman,” he said.

“I had no problem with that attached name, had they confined to labelling only, he said.

Masunda is being haunted day and night by state security agencies.

“Iam under surveillance with real threats to my life, being persecuted for what I believe in…basic human rights and fundamental freedoms such as belonging to a political party of one’s choice”.

“If a state cannot offer such fundamentals, then it becomes authoritarian”.

Soldier In Court After Stealing A Trolley Full Of Groceries

A member of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) yesterday appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court charged with shoplifting.

Sihlzuluking Ndashata (32) appeared before magistrate Shane Kubonera, who postponed the matter to today for bail ruling.

Ndashata was represented by Tafadzwa Masenda. The complainant is Born Marche Supermarket, Chisipite, represented by Edmore Mukwindidza.

Allegations are that on April 29, this year at around 11am, Ndashata entered Borne Marche Supermarket in Chisipite and took a trolley and picked groceries.

He loaded goods worth $69 944,38 and left without paying. He was, however, caught by an alert security guard who asked for a receipt, but failed to produce them.

CCTV footage showed that this was not the first time that Ndashata had committed the offence.

He also did the same on April 17 and on April 28 at the same shop. The total value of the stolen goods is $209 883,17. Goods worth $69 944,38 were recovered.

Government Has Failed Our Education: ARTUZ

04 May 2022

Zimbabwe’s education is screaming for help, it has been abandoned and is suffocating under the yoke of austerity.

The government of Emmerson Mnangagwa consistently allocates a paltry 13% of national budget towards basic education, way below the 20% Dakar threshold. The net effect of under funding is;

  1. Slave wages for teachers rendering them incapacitated.
  2. Mass dropouts of learners as parents fail to foot the education bill.
  3. Collapse of infrastructure and lack of basic services in schools across the country.
  4. Unavailability of teaching and learning materials for the new curriculum.

In summary Zimbabwe’s classroom has closed shop. The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe, ARTUZ launched the #SaveOurEducationZw campaign in a desperate bid to mobilise citizens to demand adequate funding for our education.

The Union salutes all the Citizens who have taken heed of the call and participated in our multiple advocacy tactics. Our campaign has however attracted a massive backlash from a state which firmly believes in command tactics.

In the face of a repressive state we have to build Coalitions and make repression impossible!

It is against this background that ARTUZ is joining the 9 May 2022 protest organised by the Zimbabwe National Students Union, ZINASU. Students in tertiary institutions who are failing to pay fees are sons and daughters of the working class. The government cut spending on education transferring the burden of funding education to the shoulders of the either underpaid or unemployed working class.

We call upon Teachers to completely withdraw their labour on 09 May 2022. Parents are urged to keep their children at home. The broader working class is urged to take heed of this call and demand a living wage from the bosses.

Let’s stand as a class and make repression expensive! #OrganiseOrStarve

Under Pressure ZUPCO Says It Is Increasing Fleet For Urban Transportation

The Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) says it is in the process of increasing its fleet of buses in the wake of increased demand for intra-city shuttle services by the commuting public.

This comes as the commuting public has called for more ZUPCO buses and commuter omnibuses to ease transport challenges especially during peak hours.

The need for more intra-city buses has also been necessitated by the reopening of schools.

While most passengers interviewed by ZBC News at Market Square and Fourth Street bus termini in Harare appreciate the ZUPCO facility, they cannot ignore the fact the fleet is inadequate.

“We call for relevant authorities to increase the fleet because as you can see there are long queues. Sometimes we wait for three hours without being ferried home and we are left with no option but to board Mushikashika,” said one commuter.

“There are some routes which do not have services such as in Budiriro CABS area so they must also consider giving us buses in the area,” added another.

In response, ZUPCO Acting Chief Executive Officer Everisto Madangwa said they are currently in the process of acquiring a fleet of about 400 buses after dispatching an additional 40 buses to ply intra-city routes in Harare last week.

“Currently we have a fleet of 1 104 buses and 1 530 commuter omnibuses countrywide. We released a batch of 40 buses last week for Harare. We are open to private sector players who wish to use our franchise. In the coming two moths we are expecting another batch of new buses from China to augment our fleet,” he said.

In an effort to bring sanity to the public transport system, government revived ZUPCO operations, with private players willing to operate under the franchise expected to register with the company.

However during peak hours, the commuting public has had to use undesignated pick-up points where they board pirate taxis or private cars to and from the Central Business District (CBD).

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has of late accused pirate taxis also known as Mushikashika of causing chaos and creating unnecessary traffic jams in the CBD.

Zimbabwe’s Paper Industry Entices Kenyan Investor

A Kenyan multinational company, Paperbags Limited (Paperbag), is making inroads into the Zimbabwean paper industry after it was enticed by the huge market, it has emerged.

The company, according to information on its website, manufactures a wide variety of packaging materials, mainly paper bags and sacks.

The multi-million-dollar industry is currently dominated by Hunyani Board and Paper, which enjoys the monopoly over supply of paper-based packaging materials.

Paperbags is reportedly seeking to initially enter the market as an exporter of packaging materials for flour and mealie-meal before eventually setting up a manufacturing plant in the country.

It is taking advantage of provisions of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCTA), a multilateral trade arrangement involving all African states.

The agreement initially requires members to remove tariffs from 90% of goods manufactured on the continent, allowing free access to commodities, goods, and services across Africa.

According to information at hand, the expression of interest by Paperbags has drawn interest from market players as it allows them to access the products at significantly lower prices.

Sources close to developments say the company’s executives are already in the country and are set to meet with wheat millers accounting for 99% supply of flour in Harare Tuesday.

“A meeting with the company’s executives is already set for tomorrow at a local hotel. Their expression of interest has greatly excited players in the sector because of the seemingly lower prices their products will cost given how they will benefit from the AfCTA arrangement,” a source said.

“Demand for those products is surging. The country currently consumes 12 tonnes of self-raising flour per month, and this translates to about 10 million paper packs of different sizes.  That is set to increase significantly when farmers start receiving their agriculture produce. For the past 42 years, Hunyani has been enjoying monopoly of the market and this is going to be a game changer,” the source said.

“Most of their clients have been complaining about the quality of service they have been receiving from Hunyani; their payment systems, delivery and other issues. The entry of these people is going to shack them a little bit, especially given that preliminary indications are that Paperbag’s products could come at a price 15% less than the one currently being witnessed.”

Kalimbwe Calls Linda To Order, Tells Her To Bath First

By- Zambia’s ruling party spokesperson, Joseph Kalimbwe has called fly-by-night Zimbabwean politician, Linda Masarira to order and challenged her to bath first before she comes out in public.

The United Party for National Development spokesman said this on Twitter responding to Masarira’s comments on Zambia’s domestic affairs.

Tweeted Kalimbwe:

Last night i read a tabloid article where Linda Masarira of LEAD commented on AFRICOM in Zambia. She says “Hakainde is a security threat to SADC”. Its sad, Linda has no moral standing to lecture & insult Zambia. She must get water, soap & offer democracy lectures in Borrowdale !

Zanu PF Pleads To Meet With Chamisa

By- Zanu PF has said it was interested in dialogue with the CCC president Nelson Chamisa.

The ruling party said they would meet with Chamisa only after the opposition leader had publicly denounced Britain.

Speaking to journalists at the party headquarters in Harare on Tuesday, 3 May, Zanu PF spokesperson and Secretary for Information and Publicity, Christopher Mutsvangwa, conceded that ZANU PF was open to dialogue with CCC.

Mutsvangwa, however, insisted that Chamisa should distance himself from remarks made by Lord Jonathan Oaths in the British House of Lords supporting him (Chamisa) for dialogue to happen between Zanu PF and CCC. Said Mutsvangwa:

We call upon the CCC to order and distance themselves from John Oath’s statements.

How do we negotiate with you when you are associated with such statements?

Chamisa should be patriotic by distancing himself from such statements if he is willing to talk to us.

For a British Lord to have the temerity that we don’t like Douglas Mwonzora (MDC Alliance leader) because he is not opposed to ZANU PF the way we like Chamisa, is the height of imperial arrogance and that is unacceptable.

We appeal to the opposition and in particular Chamisa. This is the occasion the CCC must make a decision.

There is a duty to choose the flag of the country over anything else.

Lord Oates recently told the British Parliament that the state hindered Chamisa from campaigning before the 26 March by-elections while Douglas Mwonzora’s MDC Alliance, which he described as a ZANU PF project, was unmolested.

Oates also said CCC was denied the right to use its own name (MDC Alliance) in the elections or to access the public funds it was entitled to.

Meanwhile, CCC deputy spokesperson Gift Ostallos Siziba said the opposition party is not pushing for a dialogue with ZANU PF but for an all-inclusive dialogue that involves churches. Siziba said:

We have never pushed for dialogue with ZANU PF, but for a national dialogue including the churches.

The ZANU PF government is not legitimate. It has been rejected by the Western community.

Mnangagwa is not legitimate, and no one wants to be associated with Mnangagwa’s government.

Jumbos Kill Two In Kariba

By- Jumbos in Kariba have killed two people and injure one.

In the first incident, a man believed to be mentally challenged was gored by an elephant in the Kasese area of Kariba town on Friday.
The man, who could not be identified, was discovered by a man who became curious after seeing marabou storks hovering above and went to check, only to find the lifeless body of the man.

“The man was found with his pair of trousers torn while there was also evidence he had been dragged on the ground and the spoors of elephants were found around the area,” said Mr John Kemberi of Nyamhunga 1 Township.
“We know the man as being mentally challenged and he actually stays in the Kasese area and he normally goes to Chawara to get bread from a local bakery every day.”
It is believed that the man was attacked late Friday night.
His body was taken to Kariba District Hospital mortuary amid indications that there was no foul play suspected to warrant a postmortem.

Superintendent Saul Mhanqwa confirmed the death, adding that until now, no one had come forward to identify the man.
“He is at our local mortuary and we do not have his particulars and no one has come through to help us identify him,” said Supt Mhanqwa.
In another incident, Theresa Musakanda of Nyamapanza Village under chief Msambakaruma in Ward 9, was fatally trampled by an elephant on Wednesday.
Gift Taurai Moyo was lucky to escape with a broken leg after being attacked by an elephant in the National Anglers Union area while coming from fishing with two of his friends.
The elephant charged them. “I ran together with my colleagues but because I was wearing a tracksuit-bottom which was sagging, I could not outrun my colleagues. The elephant then targeted me,” said Mr Moyo.
“I ran towards the lake but it kept charging at me. I got into the water but I realised that I was now between its hind and front legs. It started trampling in the water. Unfortunately, one of its hind legs stepped on me and I felt that it had broken.”

After a while the elephant left the water and Mr Moyo remained in the water fearing that the elephant would notice he was still alive.
Two months ago, another person was attacked and killed by elephants while tending their field.

MRP Confronts Mnangagwa’s Envoy Over Extermination Threats | FULL TEXT

Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP)

MRP leadership engages Zimbabwean Embassy Ambassador HE David Hamadziripi

Yesterday Mthwakazi Republic Party had a fruitful meeting that was held in Pretoria South Africa at the Zimbabwean Embassy.

The meeting was an initiative by MRP to engage the government of Zimbabwe through its Ambassador to SA, HE David Hamadziripi.
Despite recent political threats by the President of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa to shorten the lives of the Mthwakazi people on their activism on issues relating to Mthwakazi People, the revolutionary party continues on its undying mandate to see justice delivered fairly and with assurances for the people of the western part of Zimbabwe withstanding terminal extinction in the hands of the Zimbabwean government.

The meeting was given a warm comradely welcome by Ambassador Hamadziripi as a way of diplomatic engagements to pursue a lasting solution, especially on matters of the dire plight of the people of Matabeleland and Midlands currently faced with a second Genocide now in the hands of angry and frustrated South Africans. All this is due to the destructive elements of Zimbabwe’s policies of nation-building founded on systematic tribalism and segregation that has pushed our people out of their homeland to foreign lands.

With statistical data proving over 4 million Zimbabweans living in SA and abroad, close to 3 Million of those may be of Mthwakazi origin whose plight started in the early stages of independence where a divide and rule by conquest strategy was administered as a rule book and governance policy against the unitary philosophy of Dr. Joshua Nkomo who believed in equality and nation-building outside of tribal orientations, race or creed.
The most satanic document, the 1979 Grand plan authored by the likes of Shamuyarira ushered in a severe annihilation through the genocide of our people on ethnic lines and further displacing them to foreign lands.

These and others formed part of the premises of engagement at the embassy to move beyond talk and find a solution for the millions who may end up dying in the hands of the South Africans under our watch.

The team comprising the National executive Velile D Moyo MRP Spokespersons, Alpheus Fuyana Foreign Affairs Secretary, and the SA chatter leaders Bheki Ndhlovu and his able team highlighted many issues especially that pertain to the welfare of our people in SA, their continued stay, future repatriations and the assurances of ethical standards and dignity when they return home.j

It is these and other important diplomatic arrangements that were agreed on to save lives and provide immediate help to ensure that our people living in SA may not face similar elements in the future as SA continues to be agitating against foreigners, especially Zimbabweans.

It is the leadership that MRP will continue to provide and escalate engagements not only with Zimbabwe but with SA as well through other Mthwakazi – SA engagement platforms to reduce and minimize the damage that this great SA problem may be posing to the future welfare of Mthwakazi.

We want to assure all Mthwakazi people that as MRP we will do all we can to safeguard our welfare and that of generations to come. We are not just in politics but we are in a struggle for a better tomorrow where Justice Peace and prosperity are the hallmarks of the Nation.

For all those in SA seeking immediate help to remain documented or may seek repatriations, MRP will avail channels soon.

We encourage our people to seek peace among South Africans and desist from provocative and vengeful statements on social media and seek immediate solutions to save their lives while still in SA.

MRP leadership also as a matter of priority, quizzed the Ambassador on the previous 2020 and 2021 submissions to the Embassy by Mthwakazi and various stakeholders that were held under public protests. An understanding was reached and, it is on these and other issues political and pressing that we will still pursue through supplementary engagements and government lobbying for clarity.

We as MRP have vowed not to accept and bow down to threats but will use all possible channels to lobby the government of Zimbabwe and bring recourse to salvage an already collapsing Mthwakazi nation as this is a matter of life and death.

We call for cooperation and calm in the processes of diplomatic engagements while we seek our ultimate goal of self-determination and freedom from the oppressive state of Zimbabwe.

Currently, Mthwakazi people in SA in need of immediate help can contact the MRP department of information and publicity and that of the Foreign Affairs for facilitation through various provisions in place.

For Peace and Justice in our lifetime

Transporters Confront Mnangagwa Over Zupco Monopoly

By- Transporters through the Zimbabwe Union of Drivers and Conductors (ZUDAC) have challenged the government to end the Zimbabwe United Passengers Company (ZUPCO) monopoly.

Mr Chitungwiza A True Legend

Reuben Yuda

John Chibadura
Born John Nyamukokoko
February 17, 1957
Died August 4, 1999 (aged 42)
Nationality Zimbabwe
Other names Mr Chitungwiza
Occupation
Musician.

John Chibadura was one of the best sungura and reggae artist in Zimbabwe. He was popularly known as “Mr Chitungwiza” for being the first musician to own a house in Chitungwiza at a time when the suburb was sprawling and when he was basking in glory. His music genre was a blend of sungura, jit, rhumba and reggae. He formed his own outfit known as The Tembo Brothers. He gained international recognition in the 1980s but Mozambique was his second home and whenever he was performing in Mozambique, the Mozambicans welcomed him as one of their lost son. Together with his band, Chibadura managed to release many albums and his first single was “Upenyu Hwandinetsa”.

Background

Chibadura was born John Nyamukokoko on 17 February 1957. He lost his mother when he was five, he never had a place which he called his permanent home. It is said that he usually relocated from one relative’s household to another as no one was able to take full responsibility of him.

[1] In the wake of all this, Chibadura was not able to finish school and he was thus forced to seek employment. He was first employed as a shepherd in Darwendable Farming area, where he hailed from. From being a shepherd, he became a driver at a certain farm, driving the tractor.[1] He was then employed as a lorry driver and it was during this period in which he began to learn how to play an electric guitar.[1] His ability to play the guitar earned him the nickname ‘Chibadura’ meaning the man who can do the best on the guitar.

In February 1980, Chibadura relocated from Darwendale to Salisbury (present day Harare) in company of his friend Shepherd Chinyani.[1] During this time, Chibadura was known as Enock Chimukoko.

Music career

Chibadura launched his musical career in Harare together with Chinyani who became part of a band known as The Holy Brothers.[1] The band was however short lived and some of the band members were reported to have abandoned their musical careers.

Chibadura and Chinyani teamed up with Tineyi Chikupo who was the front man of a band called Mother Band which he had formed in the early 1980s.

[1] Chikupo however left his band and Chibadura together with Chinyani teamed with Ronnie Gatakata, Bata Sintirawo popularly known as Manyowa and they started performing in Mutoko at a certain hotel.[1] They were identified as a band, surprisingly the band was still yet to acquire a name. This anonymous band relocated to Domboshawa after they were being continuously ill-treated by the owner of the hotel at Mutoko, a place which had become their performing base.[1] In Domboshawa, they signed a contract which enabled them to perform at Mverechena Hotel and the band was subsequently named The Mverechena Band.[1] After being offered a contract to perform at Mushandirapamwe Hotel in Highfield, the Mverechena Band left Domboshawa for Harare and they assumed a new name, The Sungura Boys being led by Chibadura.[1] The band released albums such as Sara Ugarike, Rugare Tangenhamo which all sold more than 100 000 copies.
There are conflicting reports regarding the actual year in which Chibadura formed his Tembo Brothers. It was reported that it was in 1983 when Chibadura decided to try his luck in music when he was inspired by some of the then well-established artists who were performing in the local beer halls which Chibadura frequently visited.[2] It was also reported that, it was in 1985 when Chibudara left The Sungura Boys to form the Tembo Brothers.[1] Regardless of this, the fact still remains that Chibadura was the one who initiated the formation of the Tembo Brothers.

International Performances

Chibadura and his band, the Tembo Brothers managed to gain recognition internationally. The band toured the United Kingdom twice and in 1988 the band was invited to be a guest on Andy Kershaw’s Radio 1 show.[1] The band is said to be the first amongst the other outfits that were in the country in the 1980s to perform in Europe. Chibadura performed his last gig in Ireland at The Travellers Rest as part of the celebration of the Senses Festival.[3] Regionally, the band registered success in Mozambique and it was reported that each time there was a show slated for the Tembo Brothers, Chibadura would be ferried to concerts by the presidential helicopter.[1]

His Death

Chibadura died of an undisclosed ailment in 1999 but left an enduring legacy. After his death, the Tembo Brothers managed to record three albums being led by Roderick Chomudhara.[4]

Jere Breathes Fire

CAPS United president Farai Jere has declared that he does not want to see the six players fired by the Green Machine for the strike which nearly led to their match against Cranborne Bullets being called off last Sunday.

Makepekepe players arrived at the National Sports Stadium late, forcing a 45-minute delay, in protest over the club leadership’s reluctance to review salaries and pay outstanding winning bonuses.

In response, the Jere-led administration dismissed six players believed to have been masterminds of the strike – Dennis Dauda, Devon Chafa, Rodwell Chinyengetere, Clive Augusto, Simba Chinani, and Ronald Chitiyo.

Jere, who is also the Premier Soccer League Chairman, said he does not want to see the dismissed players at CAPS.

“I have fired the six players. I don’t want to see them at Caps United. The reason is that results have not been coming. It is not consistent with their profiles. Their letters of dismissal have already been written and I am signing them right now. You can imagine, their salaries are paid up, they are up to date, but they participate in industrial action simply because they have not been paid bonuses for two matches,” he told NewsDay Sport.

“They want to be paid in United States dollars. They were also disrespectful to the coaches. Imagine, they selected their starting 11 where Chinani was the coach and even called for the substitution of Joseph Tulani. These players are bringing football into disrepute. Can I tolerate this?” he added.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Mr Mnangagwa Does Not Own Country

Tinashe Sambiri| Citizens’ Coalition For Change Namibia has pointed out that it is now time for citizens to protect themselves from Zanu PF barbarism.

Zanu PF hooligans attacked CCC members in Chitungwiza on Monday.

In a statement on Tuesday, CCC Namibia said citizens should protect themselves from political violence as Zanu PF is determined to kill perceived foes.

Read statement below:

Citizens Coalition For Change Namibia urges change champions to defend themselves against ZanuPF violence!

03 May 2022

Citizens Coalition For Change Namibia absolutely condemns the state-sponsored violence in Zengeza ward 7 where change champions were butchered for taking part in a door to door campaign towards 7 May by-elections.

The district was extremely cobra-headed to see its prospective councillor Maiko with severe head injuries. Change champions in Namibia urge citizens to defend themselves against ZanuPF thugocrats. It’s now high time we resist intimidation, torture and gross abuse of human freedoms.

What happened in Chitungwiza is a clear testament that the desperate regime is willing to do anything to impede the Yellow Revolution.

It is astonishing that ZanuPF terror is being unleashed in towns, we lost our youthful change champion Mboneni Ncube a few days before by-elections and nothing was done to the perpetrators. This sadist attempt to deter social democrats must be resisted with equal measure. I believe that party supporters should now embrace dangerous freedom against ZanuPF-sponsored violence. Change champions should not continue to fold their hands at the face of this brutality.

Citizens Coalition For Change Namibia challenges Zec and the judiciary to defend the vulnerable citizens to promote free, fair and credible elections in Zimbabwe. Violence from the unpopular regime reflects ZanuPF’s unpreparedness to accept defeat in 2023.

These rigging shenanigans should not go unchallenged. Zec should work diligently to establish an even political field for all parties to campaign freely. It is a sham to have politically motivated violence, attacking our party candidates three days before polls. This undoubtedly unearthed the cluelessness of the Harare regime. We need serious security for our members and supporters both in rural and urban areas.

For how long shall we continue to fold our hands when our people are being beaten, abducted and tortured for believing in the organic and eloquent leader President Advocate Nelson Chamisa? It is now imperative to get organised in towns and rural areas so that we can resist intimidation, torture arbitrary arrests and forced disappearances of change champions. The district encourages Yellow Revolutionaries to wake up and smell the coffee. 2023 harmonised elections need a pragmatic approach. Change champions should recruit, mobilise and radicalize for serious resistance against ZanuPF thugocrats.

Zimbabwe is not ZanuPF’s private property! We also own the motherland hence no need to be treated as second class citizens. It should be shoulder for shoulder with ZanuPF thugocrats. Defending ourselves is not violence! We are a peace-loving party but overstretching our patience and love for peace should not be allowed to continue.

Zengeza is our stronghold! How can we be beaten in Harare? Of all the places, we can’t have our change champions beaten in the capital city. This must be resisted with equal measure.

Our message to ZanuPF is clear, no amount of torture and gross abuse of the fundamental human rights shall break our resolve to win Zimbabwe for complete change under President Advocate Nelson Chamisa.

We shall commit and dedicate to prosecute the national democratic revolution to its logical conclusion. Citizens Coalition For Change Namibia wishes a speedy recovery to our prospective councillor Maiko and all change champions who incurred severe injuries during the door to door campaign.

It is quite perturbing and infuriating to have the captured police aiding ZanuPF thugs to disrupt a peaceful campaign a few days before 7 May by-elections. We really demand a new government that respects democratic values and cultures.

This closure of democratic space in Zimbabwe unravels ZanuPF’s fear of electoral defeat in these by-elections.

Change champions need to develop the varlour, mettle, courage and nerve to confront Zec, police and ZanuPF satanists in the eye for socio-economic transfiguration. We need to escalate our resistance against state-sponsored violence.

Zec must be disbanded! We need an independent ZEC which is non-partisan. We can’t continue with a biased referee. The police should also act professionally.

Soccer Fan Stabs Wrong Man In Case Of Mistaken Identity

A Chipinge man escaped death by a whisker after he was stabbed in the neck and shoulder in a case of mistaken identity.

Washington Chitokonye, a football fan, allegedly stabbed Trymore Mugariri with an okapi knife in the stomach before vanishing from the scene.

Chitokonye reportedly mistook Mugariri for another fan whom he had had a misunderstanding with earlier during the day.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Manicaland Province, Inspector Norbert Muzondo confirmed the incident.

He said:

The incident happened at Muumbe Football Grounds in Magamba Village in Chief Musikavanhu’s area.

The two were among soccer fans who had gathered at the grounds to watch a soccer match.

During the match, Chitokonye had an altercation with someone who was drunk and was wearing a red T-shirt.

Woman Steals Cash From Hubby

A woman from Glen View suburb in Harare appeared before a magistrate on Monday, 2 May, after she allegedly stole US$16 000 from her husband.

The complainant, Michael Chiboiwa, had given his wife Moretime Muzondo the money for safekeeping.

The money was meant for the construction of the couple’s house.

Muzondo was not asked to plead when she appeared before Harare magistrate Yeukai Dzuda.

Prosecuting, Anesu Chirenje alleged that Chiboiwa gave Muzondo US$16 000, which he wanted to use for building a house on their residential stand.

Tribute To John Chibadura

Madrid Celebrate 35th La Liga Title

Real Madrid have won their 35th La Liga title with four games to spare after beating Espanyol 4-0 at Santiago Bernabeu.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side only needed a point against Espanyol to secure the trophy, but ended up taking all three to record their fifth successive victory.

They got a first-half brace from Rodrygo and two more from Marco Asensio and Karim Benzema who scored one each.

Madrid’s win over Espanyol was their 25th of the 2021-22 campaign, and they have also recorded six draws and three defeats.

The Bernabeu outfit boasts the best-attacking record in La Liga with 71 goals and the second-best defensive record behind Sevilla.

Ancelotti has now delivered two trophies since returning to Santiago Bernabeu from Everton last summer, with success in La Liga following up their Supercopa de Espana final victory over Athletic Club in January.

Madrid could still win a third trophy before the season ends as they remain in the hunt for Champions League glory.

Manchester City are standing in the way of the 13-time winners in the semi-finals and managed to record a 4-3 win in the first leg of the tie at the Etihad Stadium, but Madrid will still be hopeful of a comeback in the return leg on Wednesday night.- Pindula News

NetOne Staffer, Side-Chick In Tragic Death

By- A NetOne vehicle that was recently swept away by a flood at Chilonga Bridge, Runde River, was being driven by an employee of the company who was travelling with an alleged lover, a report claims.

The Mirror reported sources as saying the deceased NetOne employee was Samson Zvarimwa (48), who was employed as an engineer.

Zvarimwa worked at NetOne, Balmain Building in Masvingo and stayed in the Runyararo North West suburb.

The other occupant of the vehicle was a woman who was not employed by NetOne.

The passenger was Loice Maradze (40) who was a money changer in Masvingo, according to the report.

Maradze reportedly operated next to Pick and Pay Supermarket.

NetOne spokesperson, Roselyn Chisvetu, confirmed the death of Zvarimwa and said the company would issue a statement in due course.

Zvarimwa and Maradze reportedly travelled together from Masvingo to Chiredzi South, a journey of more than 200km.

The tragic incident occurred as they were coming back from Chilonga after filling a diesel-powered generator at a mobile base station in the area.

They used a longer route to Chilonga through Mupapa which is safe from floods but decided to use the shorter route assuming that the water level at the bridge had subsided.

The deceased were found trapped inside the car after villagers used a rope to pull the vehicle out of the flooded Runde River.

Zvarimwa is survived by his wife, Diana and 2 children.

Zvarimwa’s sister Jessie Mandebvu said Zvarimwa will be laid to rest in Jichidza, Nhopi area in Zaka on Wednesday, 4 May.

Mandebvu, however, said that she did not know the woman who was in the company of her brother.

ZEC Responds To Exposed Kariba Vote Rigging Plot

By- The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has responded to reports that it plans to rig a by-election in Kariba.

The electoral body said the alledged rigging plot was malicious adding that it had no right to deny citizens their right to register as voters as long as they provide acceptable proof of residence.

This follows allegations of the existence of anomalies on the Kariba Municipality Ward 8 voters’ roll where 87 people registered as voters used stand number 1110 Chiwara as their place of residency. It is further claimed that the said stand is a non-residential stand.

In a press statement on Tuesday, 3 May, ZEC Chief Elections Officer Utoile Silaigwana said those who have concerns over the alleged anomalies on the voters’ roll should raise their objections as provided in the Electoral Act. Read the statement:
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission would like to put the record straight on allegations of anomalies on the Kariba Municipality Ward 8 voters’ roll.
Concerns have been raised that over 87 people registered as voters on stand number 1110 Chiwara, a non-residential stand.

The public should know that as long as prospective registrants produce acceptable proof of residence, the Commission has no right to deny them the chance to register as voters.
The Commission has no way of ascertaining the veracity of one’s claims at registration, especially as they relate to a residence and it is incumbent upon the applicant to proffer correct information as failure to do so constitutes an offence in terms of section 37(2) of the Electoral Act.
It is also pertinent to note that the Electoral Act permits voters registered in the same ward/constituency to object to the retention of any name on the voters’ roll setting out the reasons for their objection which could be that the person does not reside in their constituency.

The voter registration officers would then look into the issue and either uphold the objection or reject the objection after following due process.
The Commission encourages those voters in ward 8 of Kariba Municipality with such objections to approach the Commission as per the provisions of the law.

Ngodzo To Remain At Real Betis Despite Bulawayo City Appointment

Johannes Ngodzo will remain within Real Betis Academy structures despite being appointed the interim co-head coach of Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League side Bulawayo City.

The gaffer will take charge of the team together with Mduduzi Mpofu following the sacking of Philani Ncube after failing to deliver positive results and left the team in the drop zone.

The appointment will not affect Ngodzo’s arrangement with the Betis since the academy is working with City on its project in Bulawayo.

Academy chairman Gerald Sibanda explained to Soccer24: “Johannes Ngodzo’s appointed with Bulawayo City doesn’t affect his position with Betis. He is still part of our coaching team in Bulawayo together with Gift Lunga.

“The appointment is a fantastic opportunity for us because we are already working with Bulawayo City FC and the Bulawayo City Council (the club owners).

“What Bulawayo City will bring to the pitch, will involve some of the work that we shall be doing on grassroot level.

Time For Citizens To Protect Selves From Zanu PF Hooliganism

Can I tolerate this?” he added.

FULL TEXT: Frontline Defenders Speak On Abduction Of ARTUZ Member

On 27 April 2022, human rights defender and member of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), Robson Chere, was arbitrarily detained by members of the Central Intelligence Organisation. The human rights defender was conducting a planning workshop at Guruve Growth Point when the officers interrupted the meeting, and arrested the human rights defender without a warrant. Robson Chere was released later the same day after he was dropped off at the Guruve Police Station.

Robson Chere is a human rights defender and the secretary general of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ). ARTUZ is a Trade Union working for the improvement of the working conditions of rural teachers as well as the right to education in rural areas of Zimbabwe. Founded in 2009 in response to extremely poor wages and working conditions of rural teachers, the union now has about 35,000 members and operates in 10 provinces, widening its reach to include non rural teachers.

On 27 April 2022, human rights defender Robson Chere was conducting a planning workshop for ARTUZ’s Save Our Education campaign when two plain clothes individuals, later identified as members of the Central Intelligence Organization (CIO), interrupted the meeting. The human rights defender was briefly arbitrarily detained for about an hour on the roadside by the two men. After his arbitrary detention was made public online, with ARTUZ reporting the make and the number plate of the vehicle in which Robson Chere was taken, the human rights defender was dropped off at the Guruve Police Station. Robson Chere was then handed over to the CID Law and Order Department and detained for an additional 3 hours without charges. During his detention, the human rights defender was interrogated about the workshop meeting. The officers demanded to know “who is funding [the ARTUZ campaign]” and “what the big goal” is. The police released him without charges after the interrogation.

This is not the first time that ARTUZ and its members have been targeted. On 27 April 2019, Robson Chere and fellow ARTUZ members Jess Drury, Precious Ndlovu and Munyaradzi Ndawana were arbitrarily detained by the CIO section of Harare Central Police Station. The four defenders were released later the same day, but continued to face judicial harassment into 2020. On 12 January 2021, sixteen human rights defenders and members of ARTUZ were arrested during a peaceful protest. The human rights defenders in this case were charged with participating in a gathering with the intention to promote public violence, bigotry and breaches of peace, as defined in Section 37(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act. They are still e xperiencing continued judicial harassment.

Front Line Defenders is deeply concerned by the arbitrary detention and interrogation of human rights defender, Robson Chere, and the continued targeting of ARTUZ and its members, as it believes this to be due to their legitimate and peaceful work in defence of human rights.

Front Line Defenders urges the authorities in Zimbabwe to:

  1. Carry out an immediate, thorough and impartial investigation into the arbitrary detention Robson Chere, with a view to publishing the results and bringing those responsible to justice in accordance with international standards;
  2. Stop the continued targeting of ARTUZ for carrying out their legitimate work to defend the rights of others;
  3. Guarantee in all circumstances that all human rights defenders in Zimbabwe are able to carry out their legitimate human rights activities without fear of reprisals and free from all restrictions, including judicial harassment.

Zanu PF Youths Fight For Positions Amid Vote Buying Claims

Daggers have been drawn ahead of the Zanu PF national youth congress slated for tomorrow in Harare amid allegations of vote-buying and jostling for leadership positions.

Over 2 000 delegates from across the country’s provinces are expected to attend the youth congress.

Zanu PF national chairperson Oppah Muchinguri is set to chair the conference which was last held eight years ago.

The elective congress will result in the election of the deputy secretary for youth affairs, which is a powerful post within the party. The youth secretary will then be appointed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The position has been vacant since Lewis Matutu was booted out of the ruling party in 2020 for gross insubordination.

Tendai Chirau has been the acting youth affairs secretary, but he can no longer contest for the post as he is now over 35 years old.

Zanu PF deputy secretary for youth affairs Tendai Chirau yesterday told NewsDay that the party will not tolerate vote-buying ahead of the youth elections.

“Vote-buying is outlawed and if you have evidence of that you are allowed to come to us,” Chirau said.

However, there are several reports that money has been changing hands as youths jostle for the deputy secretary of youth affairs post.

Dubbed the battle for money, the secretary for youth affairs post will see gold dealer John Paradza (Gutu West MP) battling it out against fuel dealer Danmore Mambondiyani.

Mambondiyani is Mutare district co-ordinating committee secretary for youth affairs.

Sources in Zanu PF yesterday told NewsDay that the two have been using their financial clout to mobilise support ahead of the watershed congress.

The youth affairs deputy secretary will be in charge of Zanu PF’s youth wing ahead of the 2023 general elections.

“We are seeing an interesting scenario where Gutu West MP John Paradza is using his money to shore up support ahead of the elections. Paradza is filthy rich and he is into gold dealing and has been dishing out money to some structures,” a source said.

“We don’t think Mambondiyani will be outclassed — remember he is into fuel dealing, and he is also using his money to garner support,” he said.

Tensions are said to be simmering in Masvingo province following accusations that Paradza has been refusing to accredit delegates who are against him.

“Paradza is one of the heavyweights in Masvingo province. He is leaving no stone unturned to get the post. He is very ambitious, remember, he is the one who is controlling Masvingo province,” an insider said.

Paradza was not available for comment yesterday.

Zanu PF Manicaland youth chairman Stanley Sakupwanya is also said to be canvassing for support for Mambondiyani.

“Zanu PF Manicaland youth chairman Stanley Sakupwanya is reportedly canvassing for support for Mambondiyani and is making sure that he removes all those people who are anti-Mambondiyani from the list since it was announced that provinces should reduce their delegations to the conference,” a source said.

Sakupwanya yesterday denied the allegations.

“I am not aware of the allegations, but in Manicaland we are preparing for the congress, and we have already started the accreditation processes. The delegation has been reduced, but I do not have the actual numbers,” Sakupwanya said.

Midlands Zanu PF youth chairman Ernest Dzoro yesterday said: “There is unity in the Midlands province, and we are going as one team. We are also going to work with other provinces to come up with the best candidate.”

‘World Commemorates Press Freedom Day In Oxymoron Light’

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) would like to join members of the fourth Estate as the world commemorates this day in an oxymoron light.

The theme for this year speaks reality as the rise of social media has seen despotic governments rush to find ways to stifle freedom of expression and control information dissemination and in Zimbabwe the attempts are being made through the Cyber Security Bill which is unfortunate as it is redundant.

It is only through the power and dedication of our journalists that they have remained steadfast and committed and we appreciate the working relationship that is there.

Youths Blast Zanu PF’s Plan To Steal Chin’ono’s Goats

By A Correspondent- Youth organisation 4H Zimbabwe Foundation has urged political leaders to desist from perpetrating violence and concentrate on peace-building following threats by Zanu-PF youths to seize journalists Hopewell Chin’ono’s goats.

This follows recent threats by Zanu-PF youth activist Taurai Kandishaya to grab Chin’ono’s goats from his Murehwa rural home claiming that his project had been funded by government.

Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) youths have camped at Chin’ono’s homestead to repel the planned invasion.

4H Zimbabwe Foundation director John Muchenje yesterday told NewsDay that all this shows that political parties are using youth members to perpetrate violence during the run-up to the 2023 harmonised elections.

He blasted Kandishaya’s actions saying they will threaten peace-building efforts ahead of next year’s elections.

“Such utterances from Kandishaya show that some people do not want to follow the country’s Constitution. There is a need for people to desist from such behaviour,” Kandishaya said.

“The country should come up with a law that protects citizens from such violent perpetrators that hide behind the political jacket. Such people should actually be disqualified from contesting political office,” he said, adding that those violating other people’s rights should be punished despite political affiliation.

“There is no country that can be open for business when it is violent or does not respect its own citizens or Constitution. We need to be law abiding citizens that promote peace building,” he said.

Last week, Zanu-PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa accused Chin’ono of bad-mouthing the government.

Muchenje said as the country heads towards the 2023 plebiscite, his organisation had trained 75 youths drawn from political parties such as Zanu-PF, CCC, and the MDCs to promote peace-building and tolerance.

“We are also planning to hold a national peace convention where we will include 20 young people from each political party to gather and discuss peace-building issues ahead of the elections.

Mwonzora’s MDC- T Booed Off Stage

By A Correspondent- The opposition MDC-T got a rude awakening Sunday when an unapologetic crowd at this year’s Workers’ day celebrations in Harare forced the party’s organising secretary Gift Chimanikire off the stage.

Chimanikire spent a good three minutes speaking to himself as he was roundly booed while trying to deliver his president Douglas Mwonzora’s solidarity speech.

Even with the microphone a few centimetres away from his mouth and a booming public address system, Chimanikire was drowned out by the livid crowd which demanded that he leaves the podium.

His was going to be the second solidarity speech after Zanu PF, whose speech surprisingly went on with little drama from the dominantly CCC crowd.

Efforts by ZCTU secretary general Japhet Moyo to calm the angry crown only made it worse, as some starting singing songs against him and his party, accusing Mwonzora of being a sellout.

Tragedy As Cop Dies In Horrific Crash

By A Correspondent- A police officer died yesterday morning after he was involved in an accident when his car collided with a Zupco bus along Khami Road in Bulawayo.

National police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident and said the name of the deceased will be released after the next of kin has been informed.

“Unfortunately the accident claimed one life and the person was a policeman, more details are yet to be issued,” he said.

When Sunday News visited the scene yesterday, the whole road was still closed as police and ambulances were clearing the wreckage.

Witnesses said the police officer was driving a Toyota Granvia and made a u-turn resulting in the collision.

“The driver of the car was trapped in the car and when police came the body was retrieved and covered with a red blanket, that is how I saw he had died,” said the witness.-statemedia

ZRP Blocks CCC Campaign In Chitungwiza

By A Correspondent- Chitungwiza police yesterday blocked a Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) campaign in Zengeza West ahead of the Saturday by-election.

The event was stopped at the eleventh hour after police fired teargas and rubber bullets to disperse campaigning CCC supporters. They were also attacked by suspected Zanu-PF supporters.

This resulted in a stampede which left several people injured.

CCC ward 7 candidate Lovemore Maiko, CCC member Lazarus Sigauke and several others were left injured.

CCC alleges that the police were responsible for violently disrupting their peaceful door-to-door election campaign in Zengeza West constituency.

CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said: “We condemn the violent attacks on our members by Zanu-PF. It is our constitutional right to mobilise voters ahead of the upcoming by-election. Zanu-PF is scared stiff of CCC and it knows it can never win a free and fair election. That is why we continue to call for a pre-election pact and dialogue on electoral reforms to ensure that we do not have a disputed election in 2023. There must be an end to political violence.”

But national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi last night said he was unaware of the incident.

Workers Accuse Gvt Of Making Empty Promises

By A Correspondent- Workers yesterday accused government of making empty promises on improved wages and conditions of service for “too many years”, as teachers declared “incapacitation” again.

With schools opening for the second term today, teachers said they could not afford to go to work.

Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) secretary-general Japhet Moyo told NewsDay yesterday that unlike in the good old days when salary increases were announced on May Day, workers were now living on false promises from government and employers.

On Sunday, the country commemorated Workers Day, which is celebrated globally on May 1.

ZCTU held celebrations at 20 centres across the country, with the main celebrations being held at Chemhanza Stadium in Dzivarasekwa, Harare, where Public Service minister Paul Mavima was the guest of honour.

“They only speak without taking action. They promised free education, free healthcare, free electricity, but those promises have not been fulfilled. Trade unionists have been criminalised and whenever workers try to demonstrate, they are arrested. Workers are not politicians, but they will be demonstrating for their tummies,” Moyo said.

“We are happy that Mavima graced our celebrations because previously, the government would send junior officials.”

Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe president Obert Masaraure said:  “As teachers, we have never been treated well by the government, which has never fulfilled its promises. We are now going into the second term and our children are being chased away from school despite government promises to pay fees for them. We have written twice to the government over the payment of school fees for teachers’ children, but they (authorities) have responded saying they are on it.”

Last term, teachers and headmasters failed to report for duty claiming incapacitation. Government responded by suspending more than 50 000 educators.

The teachers are demanding to be paid the pre-October 2018 salary of US$540 per month as the economy wobbles under raging inflation, which has eroded incomes.

“The issue of assistance for three children of a teacher with school fees amounting to $20 000 each per term is long overdue as we are entering the second term without any fruition,” Takavafira Zhou, the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe president said yesterday.

The earlier government deposits the money, which has now accumulated to
$40 000 per child (for two terms), into teachers’ accounts the better.”

Zhou said teachers also wanted a rescue package that would enable them to report for work as the average teachers’ salary of $18 000 was grossly insufficient.

Educators Union of Zimbabwe president Tafadzwa Munodawafa said: “Workers in Zimbabwe, especially teachers, have for a couple of years been doing nothing more than community service.

“They have been offering their services for free and employers seem not to care. Paying workers in local currency is a mockery considering that all goods and services are being sold in US dollars. This comes at a time when the exchange rate is spiralling out of control.”

Primary and Secondary Education ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro, however, said everything was in place for schools opening, adding that there were no indications that teachers would fail to report for duty.

“Yes, we are ready to open and it’s all systems go. A lot of teachers are already at their work stations,” he said.

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) raised concerns over the persecution of workers and labour rights activists by authorities for advocating for improved salaries.

“The authorities routinely arrest workers and union leaders for protesting for better wages and improved working conditions in violation of workers’ rights to freedom to demonstrate and petition, which is enshrined in the Constitution of Zimbabwe,” ZLHR said in a statement.

Zimbabwe Nurses Association president Enock Dongo said if government continued to fail to honour its promises to workers, there would be widespread resistance.

“The situation is getting out of hand. We urge the government not to frog jump in terms of the workers’ welfare, otherwise it risks resistance. The workers’ salaries have been eroded by inflation too much. It is painful to expect someone to live on US$60 per month. We are tired of false promises and want action now as workers have lost patience,” Dongo said.

Zimbabwe Professional Nurses Union president Robert Chiduku said:  “There was nothing to celebrate on Sunday and what we see is only betrayal by the government. We foresee a major brain drain, especially in the nursing profession, which has been birthed by the prevailing economic crisis and fake promises by the employer.”-Newsday

Mnangagwa Starts Using Yellow CCC Colours

By A Correspondent | ZimEye | It was early 2018, when Emmerson Mnangagwa copied his opponent Nelson Chamisa and began to use the latter’s then red party colour. The change was too embarrassing because Mnangagwa’s ZANU colour has been the ‘unripened-green’ since independence days.

4 year later, Mnangagwa has taken over not just the red colour, but the entire MDC party through his proxy, Douglas Mwonzora. The attacks against Chamisa are as far as taking over his properties, the Harvest House building, party money, and his MPs. In January 2022, Chamisa announces a new brand colour yellow, and new name, Citizens Coalition for Change, CCC, bitterly complaining how his party has been taken over by Mnangagwa.

Days later, Chamisa is pictured in dark black sunglasses. In less than 72hrs, Mnangagwa turns self into ‘His Nerollence’ Commander In Chief of copying. The ZANU PF leader snaps self in his Kwekwe maize field wearing Chamisa’s sunglasses, the same model the youthful contender is wearing.

4 months later, Mnangagwa goes full-colour-raid, takes over Chamisa’s new party colour. He is filmed in public with an entirely new attire in the recently formed CCC party colours. WHAT IS HIS NEXT MOVE NOW?

Chamisa Exposes Vote Rigging In Kariba

By- Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, ZEC, in Kariba is said to have registered 87 people at a vacant industrial area that only has wooden pens.

This vote rigging plot has been discovered before this weekend’s by-election in the country’s Northern border town.

CCC Tweeted Monday:
On 7 May, there is a by-election in Kariba Municipality. 87 people are registered at Stand 1110 Chawara – a vacant industrial stand with wooden pens. Nobody stays there. The matter has been forwarded to our elections department for investigation.

Ancelotti Targets Champions League Glory

Dudula Thugs Kill Four Zimbabweans

By- Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change(CCC) Bulawayo spokesperson, Swithern Chirowodza, has reported that four Zimbabwean youths have been killed by South African community members in Siyaya, a section of Freedom Park, Soweto.Chirowodza posted on Twitter saying the Zimbabwean nationals were stoned to death on Saturday in South Africa. He added:

In the disturbing pic, the one in black top & blue jean is called Senzeni Moyo. Her rural home is at Mbazhe in Nkayi, which is north of the Shangani River.“Before OPERATION DUDULA (AFROPHOBIA) killed her she helplessly pleaded for mercy. A CCC Bulawayo member, who is a relative, says four other Zimbabweans lost their lives in the same attack. Her family only got to know of the incident today.”

Reports indicate that the crew was a gang of armed robbers who were stealing cellphones and laptops at gunpoint. The group was said to comprise 3 men and 2 ladies.

It is said that the community apprehended them, and beat them to death before setting ablaze their car. One lady was spared death because she was pregnant.

Several Zimbabweans have been killed in the recent past by vigilantes and or police officers for varying reasons. Some were accused of being in South Africa illegally while some were killed during anti-crime operations.

Authorities in South Africa have objected to the modus operandi of vigilantes like Operation Dudula with President Cyril Ramaphosa refusing to endorse their acts described in some quotas as xenophobic as they target foreign nationals.

Real Madrid Clinch 35th La Liga Title

Caps United Sack Six Players

Caps United have terminated the contracts of six senior players, who led a revolt on Sunday.

The Green Machine’s game against Cranborne Bullets was almost called off after the Harare giants’ players refused to play in the match.

The players were protesting over low salaries and unpaid bonuses, and did not meet at the team hotel, but grouped at a different location.

They only arrived at the National Sports Stadium with private vehicles thirty minutes after the scheduled kick-off and did not hold a warm-up session.

United went on to lose the encounter 2-0 courtesy of a brace from Brian Muzondiwa.

The club hierarchy has now fired six stars, whom they believed caused the chaos.

The sacked players are Devon Chafa, Denis Dauda, Clive Augusto, Ronald Chitiyo and Rodwell Chinyengetere.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Bosso, Chicken Inn Share Spoils

Highlanders coach Mandla Mpofu and his Chicken Inn counterpart Joey Antipas expressed their concerns over how the officials who handled their game on Sunday.

The two teams met in the Bulawayo Derby and played to a 1-1 draw.

Bosso opened the scoring through Godfrey Makaruse, who tapped home in the 21st minute.

Brian Muza then cancelled out the lead in the 76th minute as the game ended in a stalemate.

Speaking after the match, Mpofu was not convinced by the referee’s performance.

“These are big games which need big match officials. The free-kick given to Chicken Inn was a soft one and it led to a goal,” the Bosso gaffer said.

Antipas echoed the same sentiments and blamed the referee for failing to control the players.

He said: “I thought the referee could have controlled the game better by flashing cards to culprits that were hitting each other.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

NetOne Employees Still Missing After Vehicle Swept Away By River

CHIREDZI – Two drums of fuel and one oil have been recovered as two Netone workers whose car got swept off Chilonga Bridge in Chiredzi this morning are still missing.

The submerged vehicle was also spotted this afternoon and a Malilangwe plane that flew over the area could not bring back any report on the missing persons.
Efforts to get a comment from Netone were fruitless. Masvingo Police Spokesman Kudakwashe Dhewa is away at the Trade Fair.

The Mirror is told that the workers were coming from refueling a generator at a mobile phone base station in Chikombedzi. An eyewitness said that the vehicle was swept away just as its front wheels got into the bridge.

Government’s delay to construct a bridge over Runde, one of the country’s largest rivers has seen dozens of people drowning each year at the flat bridge.

“ When I saw the car I thought maybe the driver wanted to wash it and I was surprised to see him trying to drive through.

The vehicle was immediately swept away,” said the canoe operator .
Ironically a Police Sub Aqua team is expected tomorrow barely a month after they lost a member at the same point.

Operation Dudula Thugs Murder Four More Zimbabweans

By- Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change(CCC) Bulawayo spokesperson, Swithern Chirowodza, has reported that four Zimbabwean youths have been killed by South African community members in Siyaya, a section of Freedom Park, Soweto.

Chirowodza posted on Twitter saying the Zimbabwean nationals were stoned to death on Saturday in South Africa.

Yesterday, ZCTU in Southern region held workers’ day celebrations in Mufakose Grounds ,Triangle in Chiredzi.

The workers day was held when Zimbabwe workers are earning peanuts whilst the prices of goods and services skyrocket.

Mr Makumbe in Chiredzi said, “Yesterday’s workers day was a moment to reflect on workers suffering. The Government of Zimbabwe and many companies are evil as they have failed to pay workers adequate salaries.”

Speaking at ZCTU workers celebrations in Triangle yesterday, the ZCTU Chairperson for Chiredzi District Mr Moses Chivange said, “Our hearts bleed because the lowest paid worker in Tongaat earns $3000 rtgs per month. This money cannot meet the needs of the workers. Prices of goods and services are increasing daily. On the other hand, rtgs money is losing value daily due to inflation. Therefore, we urge Tongaat and other companies to pay workers in us$. “

This was supported by ZCTU Southern Region head Kudzi who said, “The Zimbabwean worker has become a laughing stock due to poor salaries. We as ZCTU urge employers to pay workers us$ salaries and not rtgs.”

In Zimbabwe, prices of bread, fuel, rentals and schools fees are increasing daily beyond reach of many. However, salaries are still very low, Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe Dr. Takavafira Zhou said, majority of teachers cannot send their children to school because teachers earn around $18 000 rtgs whereas school fees are pegged beyond
$18 000rtgs.

Most schools in Zimbabwe are charging fees in us$ or from
$45 000 rtgs to $2million rtgs per term. For example, St. George College is charging $2million rtgs for this term, which starts today.

Yesterday, at ZCTU Chiredzi workers day celebrations, interim Citizens Coalition for Change Masvingo provincial youth secretary and Chiredzi urban ward 18 councillor Mr Gilbert Mutubuki said, “As Citizens Coalition for Change under able leadership of President Chamisa, we value and respect Zimbabwe workers. Zimbabwe workers deserve best treatment in terms of salaries, protective clothing, freedom of association and better lives.” Councillor Mtubuki’s sentiments were echoed by President Chamisa’s yesterday’s message to workers , when he called the government of Zimbabwe to urgently pay workers decent salaries in us$.

Yesterday, President Chamisa attended ZCTU workers day celebrations in Harare.

Councillor Mtubuki further implores the workers to register to vote. He urged workers to vote for the party that cares for the workers. In Harare, Citizens Coalition for Change vice president Tendai Biti who gave solidarity speech behalf of CCC at ZCTU main celebrations said, Zimbabwe workers must be paid in us$ and urged workers to register to vote. In addition, vice president Biti, calls for peaceful elections and urged workers to register to vote in 2023.

Many Citizens Coalition for Change leaders, supporters and members attended ZCTU workers celebrations in Chiredzi and other towns across Zimbabwe.

ZEC Wants Twitter And Facebook Help To Rig Polls

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) wants Twitter and Facebook to pull down “damaging posts” about its handling of elections.
The election management body also wants Parliament to regulate election-related material posted on social media ahead of the 2023 elections.

Zec’s credibility is in tatters following the March 26 by-elections after data experts unearthed irregularities in the voters roll, including changes to 156 polling stations while 177 000 voters were relocated from their polling stations without their knowledge.

Zec later disowned the voters roll saying it was tampered with to discredit the elections body.

Spokesperson Jasper Mangwana said: “We are trying to just follow what other countries are doing to ensure that towards an election there is no misinformation and disinformation which may cause instability and violence.

“Those who post incorrect information will be asked to pull it down because we noted that there is a lot of false information peddled online. The commission would have a proper way to ensure that there is no (bad) information which would have implications on free and credible elections.”

Mangwana’s statement immediately attracted brickbats from the opposition with Citizens Coalition for Change interim spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere, saying it is undemocratic and unconstitutional.

“Instead of stifling constitutional freedoms we expect Zec to be championing the electoral reform agenda, pushing for amendments to the Electoral Act to ensure that its work is fully facilitated and the law is aligned to the Constitution,” Mahere said.

Mahere cited sections 68 and 209 of the Constitution, which mandates Zec to be accountable to citizens, and “to act in a manner that is lawful, reasonable and fair”.

“We don’t expect them to be silencing citizens. In fact, Zec is acting in a partisan and unconstitutional manner which doesn’t want to see free and fair elections. It must act lawfully and reasonably or it should be disbanded,” she said.

MDC-T chairoerson Mogern Komichi said Parliament should not be used to rubber stamp oppressive laws to manipulate social media.

“Zec is trying to close the democratic space. It wants to be a police force and use intimidation to suppress constructive criticism. Social media is used to educate voters and raise awareness,” Komichi said.

Labour, Economists and African Democrats president Linda Masarira said: “Zimbabweans must be allowed to exercise their right to freedom of expression to raise grievances and openly criticise where they feel Zec will be going wrong so that it can use that input to correct and reform.”

Election Resource Centre programmes manager Solomon Bobosibunu said Zec should address its communication deficiencies regarding its handling of elections.

“It will be more appropriate to be proactive in providing information which is complete, accurate and on time rather than to wait and respond after citizens have looked for information elsewhere,” Bobasibunu said.

Zimbabwe Election Advocacy Trust executive director Igneous Sadziwa said Zec should stick to its mandate and commit to manage elections impartially. -Newsday

Chamisa Denies Reports He Is Talking To Mnangagwa

CCC leader Nelson Chamisa has denied reports that he is engaged or seeking to engage President Emmerson Mnangagwa on forming a coalition government under any other other name.

Chamisa was responding to reports by the Presidential Spokesperson George Charamba who said Chamisa was behind the Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations proposal to have a 7 year election Sabbatical.

Said Chamisa, “I am not engaged with Mnangagwa on any dialogue regarding a government structure. The only dialogue and pact I have called for is the pre-election pact that must be done. I also disagreed with the proposal by the churches to have a sabbatical on elections and said we only need a sabbatical on election violence.”

Chamisa was addressing the media at the ZCTU May Day rally in Dzivarasekwa.
