Chamisa Pulls Bumper Crowd, Challenges Mnangagwa

By- Opposition, CCC President Nelson Chamisa pulled a bumper crowd at White City Stadium in Bulawayo on Saturday and said that Zanu PF would be history after 2023.

Chamisa, whose Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) is only a few weeks old after he was forced to start afresh following the controversial grabbing of the MDC Alliance by a Douglas Mwonzora-led faction, has already held well-attended rallies in Harare and Kwekwe.
A rally in Gokwe was thwarted by police, but thousands of CCC supporters defied the law enforcement agents to meet their leaders.
The Bulawayo rally held at White City Stadium in Imenyela — the second biggest stadium in the city — was a sea of yellow.
Mwonzora’s outfit held its own rally at the nearby town hall in Pelandaba last month where attendance was estimated at less than 300.
On Friday, Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga addressed a relatively small crowd in Pumula despite the ruling party pulling all stops — including bussing people to the venue — to bump up the crowds.
Bouyed by the large White City crowd, Chamisa promised to solve long-standing grievances of marginalisation and economic deprivation in Matabeleland, if his party wins the elections.
“Matabeleland we have your answers and your answers are ready,” he told the crowd.
“The first thing that we have to do as your government is to make sure that we restore Matabeleland as the industrial capital of our land.
“I know there is the issue of Gukurahundi. I am the only leader who is going to deal with truth and reconciliation in this country.”
Gukurahundi, which refers to the massacres by the army in Matabeleland and Midlands provinces in the early years of independence, remains unresolved several decades on.
Chamisa said Zanu PF would never destroy him as he claimed there were plots to assassinate him by his rivals.
He asked: “Do you agree that (President Emmerson) Mnangagwa must rest?
“Do you know that in other countries the leader of the opposition is actually given security protection?
“But in this country the leader of the opposition is being plotted against, assassination plots, traps, arrests, and violations.
“They are trying every trick in the book, but they do not know one thing that I am like David, I am walking in the anointing that is with me. They will never destroy me,” Chamisa added.
Chamisa said he was ready to lead and drive Zimbabwe to prosperity.
“I’m ready. I am ready. In 2023 there is going to be a better government. In 2023 Matabeleland will never be Zanu PF again. I want you to be an ambassador for change,” the CCC leader said.
“Mnangagwa, your dear one Chiwenga was saying he is like Goliath. Goliath I am coming there. David is coming.”
In the Bible, Goliath was an enemy warrior who was defeated by a young shepherd David, with a sling.
“They are shocked and panicking because they thought they had buried us, but they didn’t know that they had planted a seed,’ Chamisa said.
“Everyone is saying we believe in this thing because it’s a citizens’ movement.”
The parliamentary and local government elections are being held to fill vacancies largely created by the recall of elected representatives by Mwonzora and the PDP led by Lucia Matibenga under controversial circumstances.

Mavaza: Destroying Zimbabwe In Instalments, Even Mzembi Lays It All

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | Zimbabwe’s former Foreign Affairs Minister, Walter Mzembi says:  “Sanctions are old instruments of censure which have outlived their usefulness in correcting supposedly errant Nations.”

In a determined and dedicated and persistent way the United States has once again extended sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by one year and accused the county’s leaders of economic mismanagement and undermining democratic processes or institutions.

the late, Mr Tizora [2nd from right] standing next to Dr Masimba Mavaza

It is actually surprising that a country is sanctioned for economic mismanagement.

In a statement Thursday 4th of March 2022 US President Joe Biden said his administration will continue with the embargo for a further year saying President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s regime implementing policies that threaten America’s foreign policy. The four main objectives of U.S. foreign policy are the protection of the United States and its citizens and allies, the assurance of continuing access to international resources and markets, the preservation of a balance of power in the world, and the protection of human rights and democracy.

Looking at these four pillars of America’s foreign policy one wonders how is the government of Zimbabwe threatening the policies.

Coincidentally America announces extension of the sanctions on Zimbabwe Ukraine soldiers were breaching the human rights of black Africans and Asians. It was actually raised in the UN security meeting that Ukraine is holding foreigners hostage.

Instead of dealing with the true snd provable crimes they thought to punish Zimbabwe where they have no evidence at all.

Without shame America said: “The actions and policies of certain members of the Zimbabwe government and other persons to undermine Zimbabwe’s democratic processes or institutions continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the foreign policy of the United States,” Biden said.

“For this reason, the national emergency declared on March 6, 2003 and the measures adopted on that date, on November 22, 2005 and on July 25, 2008 to deal with that emergency must continue in effect beyond March 6, 2022.  Therefore, in accordance with section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)), I am continuing for one year the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13288,” he said. However it is imperative that we understand the economic sanctions.

Economic sanctions have become a popular tool in international politics, with the US being the largest actor in imposing sanctions. The aim of sanctions is to ensure government compliance with the imposer’s interests and are often viewed as more humane than military intervention. However, economic sanctions are also criticised for not achieving their objective and for having a negative impact on areas such as human rights, democracy, poverty, healthcare, and basic living conditions.

Ironically the sanctions imposed by America bring about untold suffering of the Zimbabweans. The Americans deliberately place the Zimbabwean majority within centimetres from the lion’s mouth. They expose the Zimbabweans to death and suffering because of the sanctions.

The sanctions actually defeat their own purpose.

Joe Biden went further to say
“This notice shall be published in the Federal Register and transmitted to the Congress,” Biden said, adding Harare had pursued “actions and policies that have contributed to the deliberate breakdown in the rule of law in Zimbabwe, to politically motivated violence and intimidation, and to political and economic instability in the southern African region.”

Talking about the rule of law America has breached all the laws it purports to protect. America interferes in the business of other countries breaches all the international law and displaying such totalitarianism in the name of keeping the law.

Through the economic damage of the sanctions, a significant impact is felt by the public: GDP per capita decreases at an increased rate, exports and imports decrease, international capital decreases, and inflation increases.Sanctions have been criticized on humanitarian grounds, as they negatively impact a nation’s economy and can also cause collateral damage on ordinary citizens. Peksen implies that sanctions can degenerate human rights in the target country. So it is madness for America to cause the things they are sanctioning is for.

Because of America and her puppets Zimbabwean has descended in economic abyss and the causer of that hypocritically punishes you for the things America has brought upon you. This hypocrisy is satanic and demonic.

About two weeks ago, US Embassy Charge D’Affairs Thomas Hastings warned Washington was closely monitoring the ongoing by-election campaigns that have recently turned extremely violent thanks to the CCC antics.

Economic sanctions are increasingly being used to promote the full range of American foreign policy objectives. Yet all too often sanctions turn out to be little more than expressions of U.S. preferences that hurt Zimbabwean economic interests without changing the behavior for the better. As a rule, sanctions need to be less unilateral and more focused on the problem at hand. Congress and the executive branch need to institute far more rigorous oversight of sanctions, both prior to adopting them and regularly thereafter, to ensure that the expected benefits outweigh likely costs and that sanctions accomplish more than alternative foreign policy tools.

It is unfortunate that Zimbabwe has many completely colonised to an extent that they feign harassment so that they can get sanctions on Zimbabwe extended.

It was not a coincident that CCC staged an attack in Kwekwe just to given-a grim look on Zimbabwe’s political land scape.

The negative impact that sanctions have on economic growth affect women, minority communities and other marginalised groups to a greater extent. When this happens it will appear as if Zimbabwean government is suppressing people yet it is the effects of sanctions
Zimbabwean situation has shown that Sanctions have a significant negative impact on the living standards and humanitarian situation of the population in the sanctioned state. It is these effects caused by the sanctions which gives America the reasons to put more sanctions on Zimbabwe. This is hypocrisy at its best.

Sanctions in Zimbabwe have not led to the regime changing its actions and approach and this has infuriated America who are now openly encouraging violence in the country.

Poverty is used as a tool in Zimbabwe to control the population and blame is placed on those who are in government. Sanctions in Zimbabwe have impacted the aid process leading to less aid getting through which exacerbates poverty.

The widespread use of economic sanctions constitutes one of the paradoxes of contemporary American foreign policy. Sanctions are frequently criticized, even derided. At the same time, economic sanctions are fast becoming the policy tool of choice for the United States in the post-cold war world. What is critical, moreover, is not just the frequency with which economic sanctions are used but their growing importance for U.S. foreign policy.
Economic sanctions lead to an increase in the poverty gap and deprived sections of the population feel the most impact.

For the most part sanctions fail to achieve their aims and elites manage to negotiate the adverse effects to a far greater level than poorer citizens.

Sanctions have a damaging effect on income inequality and impact ordinary people more than the sanctioned country’s leaders.

Sanctions tend to harm rural and non-industrialised areas more, as resources are refocused in power and production centres.Economic sanctions have a negative impact on the cost of reconstruction and economic growth.

So the United States and its puppets in Zimbabwe must forget the regime change agenda. It will not happen and as a country the sanctions will only make it strong.

Chamisa Calls For Coalition Against Mnangagwa

By- Opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) leader, Nelson Chamisa, has reached out to ZAPU and “all those in the other parties” to join with his party in a bid to dislodge the ruling Zanu PF from power.

Chamisa was addressing CCC supporters at the White City Stadium in Bulawayo where the party was campaigning for the 26 March by-elections and 2023 harmonised elections.

He said:

We want to work with everyone progressive… People have been speaking on various platforms, but we are starting afresh… It’s no longer about parties. It’s not about positions, it’s about the change we want for the people of Zimbabwe. There is enough space for everyone. I know that a lot of you have said so and so but, no, we want to make sure that we build a citizens’ coalition for change.
He urged Zimbabweans to vote in the upcoming elections adding that it will be difficult to rig if enough people vote.

Chamisa makes the remarks when some CCC supporters, including some senior party officials, have made it clear that they do not want former Deputy Prime Minister, Thokozani Khupe, to have a coalition with the party.

They accuse her of working with the ruling Zanu PF to dismantle the opposition in the country.

Mnangagwa Disowns Mwonzora

By- Zanu PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa has attacked the opposition MDC parties and said he was not associated with any of them.

Despite meeting MDC-T President Daglous Mwonzora several times at statehouses and on undisclosed agendas, Mnangagwa said this.

“We are going for by-elections, some seats came through deaths but the majority came through recalls from Parliament by the opposition. They are always plotting against each other, but they want to blame Zanu PF. We have nothing with their troubles, they write to Parliament and a person is recalled”, Mnangagwa said this in Chegutu on Friday, when he was addressing a Zanu PF rally.

There has been a rise in reported cases of intra-party and inter-party political violence across the country since 2020.

This is happening as the country is preparing for 26 March 2022 by-elections and 2023 harmonised elections.

Zimbabwe has in the past experienced political violence before, during and after elections, a situation that undermined polls’ credibility.

Ukraine Fleeing Students Explain Terror

State Media: It has been six days since she left Ukraine, but 19-year-old Blessing Mushipe is still terrified.

The medical student at Karazin National University in Kharkov, Ukraine’s second largest city, still gets flashbacks of the time she and her friend had to navigate a war zone, with three pairs of clothes, water and a few snacks in a backpack.

“I still want to run whenever I hear a siren. When we were still in Ukraine, a siren meant we had to rush to the basement for safety,” she told The Sunday Mail in a telephone interview from the Polish capital of Warsaw on Friday.

Although now in a place of considerable safety, her experience has left her yearning for home.

“When news of the war started filtering in, I left Kharkov where our university is. There was nothing happening there at the time, but we left hastily, there was no time to pack and I left a lot behind,” she said.

Mushipe travelled to Lviv, to pick a friend who would be her companion on the journey to the Medyka border with Poland, which is about 90 kilometres away.

“By the time we left, there had not been bombings where we were but we would hear distant sound blasts on occasions,” Mushipe said.

What was supposed to be a clean early exit turned into a nightmare.

“Soldiers would not allow black people on trains. We wanted to board a train to the border and on three occasions we were told that black people were not allowed,” she said.

A benevolent bus driver allowed them on board and concocted a fictitious story to allow them passage.

“Soldiers were saying only women and children can pass. However, if you were a black woman, they would ask you to disembark. We were saved by the bus driver at one checkpoint when he lied that we had agreed to donate blood to the Ukrainian soldiers. That is how we were granted passage,” Mushipe said.

What was supposed to be a two-hour drive at most, took them close to 24 hours, as there was too much traffic on the roads caused by general panic and checkpoints.

“The bus driver left us at the first checkpoint towards the border and we had to finish the rest of the journey on foot.”

After trotting to the border for close to 20 kilometres, they faced yet another obstacle.

“We waited in the queue from 4pm to around midnight. The queues were moving, but soldiers would come and pluck you out and send you to the back shouting the words ‘black’ ‘black’ in their language. We were only allowed to cross at midnight, but our black counterparts who were male were denied entry,” Mushipe said.

Crossing the border into Poland brought a sigh of relief as the Zimbabwean Government and a few Poland based well-wishers had made provisions for students who found themselves stranded.

“We have been well taken care of here in Poland . . . we got here and there was a boarding house which was booked. We also have food and all the basic supplies we may need, which were organised by the Embassy. Our tickets are being processed, and we will be travelling back home soon,” a relieved Mushipe said.

On the other side of Ukraine, towards the Romanian border, another group of Zimbabweans was going through the same ordeal.

Mukudzei Makurira (21), a first year Dentistry Student at the Vinnytsia Medical University got injured at the Ukraine-Romania border.

“When we got to the Ukrainian side of the border, there were more than 4 000 people of different nationalities. We had to find a way to manoeuvre through a sea of people. We had to use force. We made a decision that one person would go to the gate.”

When Makurira was at the gate, Ukrainian police officers locked the entrance incensing the people who kept pushing against him. With an inherent shoulder injury, he started feeling discomfort on his left shoulder.

“The policemen then opened because a Nigerian girl suffocated and they had to take her to safety. People took the chance to push through and there was chaos. One Ghanaian girl fell, and I was trying to block people from running over her. Because of the commotion, the Ukrainian soldiers fired two shots into the air and a soldier came my way and tackled me,” Makurira said.

“I tried to explain that she (Ghanaian girl) was unconscious, but the soldiers were not having any of that. They took most of us black people and they made us kneel down at gunpoint. I didn’t feel anything, not because I am brave but my mind was saying this is my last moment here,” he added.

They were made to lie on the ground, essentially under arrest.

It took the sudden arrival of diplomats from the Eswatini Embassy who came to get their students and Makurira was left to cross with them.

He is now in Bucharest, with a Romanian family taking care of him and his colleagues.

The manhandling left him with a serious injury as a muscle detached from his humerus bone.

Mushipe and Makurira are among of the hundreds of Zimbabweans who had to hastily escape Ukraine after Russia entered the Eastern European country to conduct a special military operation.

Events from February 24, when the military operation was began, happened fast and many countries failed to evacuate their nationals from Ukraine.

Zimbabwe, through its Embassy in Berlin, Germany, told students to find their way into either Poland or Germany and they would be assisted from there.

Zimbabwe`s Ambassador to Germany, Alice Mashingaidze, travelled from her base in Berlin to Medyka at the Polish-Ukraine border to receive students.

“We had a list of about 212 students in Ukraine Universities and as the war began, many students in cities where they could find transport and where there was less fighting, began to leave. About 120 students registered with the embassy have left but some are still crossing the borders and some crossed and are not registered with the embassy,” said Ambassador Mashingaidze.

The Embassy had organised accommodation in Poland, but the fluidity of circumstances on the ground could not see all students use the Polish borders as would have been preferred by Zimbabwean authorities.

“The plan was initially to evacuate them through Poland where prepared accommodation would be accessed by all. The Poland border of Medyka had a queue stretching over 30km and most students had to spend three to five days in the queue and were subjected to traumatic experiences,” Ambassador Mashingaidze said.

Students who had expired passports or had misplaced their passports benefited from the special arrangement between Government and a number of countries surrounding Ukraine.

Some had to leave the Poland border and cross over through Romania, Hungary, Moldova and Slovakia.

“We needed some form of representation in these countries that our citizens were escaping to. Some Zimbabweans in the diaspora were very helpful. We created a Whats App group with all the students and the well-wishers who assisted by providing shelter and food. The Embassy also provided food and secured hostel accommodation in Warsaw to prepare them for home,” said Ambassador Mashingaidze.

The Government of Zimbabwe is providing tickets for the students to return home, and an additional return ticket which can be used when the situation normalises.

“The students were highly traumatised and some had near death experiences and one of the students was injured after being manhandled at the border and is currently under assessment in Romania,” Ambassador Mashingaidze said.

She encouraged all students to go home to reconnect with their families and process events of the past few days.

“However, some are being influenced not to go home but take advantage of the refugee situation to relocate in other countries,” said Ambassador Mashingaidze.

There is a group of about 18 Zimbabweans still stuck in the north eastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, close to the Ukraine-Russian border where some of the fighting is taking place.

“Some may have crossed and disappeared into thin air without being registered with the Embassy. We have bought tickets for 59 students as of today and some have already arrived home safely,” Ambassador Mashingaidze said.

Government has been hailed by different observers for its role in assisting students leave Ukraine and get to their homes safely.

BBC Senior Journalist, Peter Okoche, through his Twitter handle, hailed Ambassador Mashingaidze for being present at the Medyka border to personally see to it that the needs of Zimbabwean students crossing into Poland are attended to.

The Russia-Ukraine war prompted Simbarashe Moyo, a Zimbabwean Nuclear Media Physics PhD student at the Jagiellonian University in Poland, to start organising safe arrivals for Zimbabweans who were crossing into Poland.-Sunday Mail

Pressure Group Condemns Brutal Murder Of CCC Member

ZEAT COMMUNICATIONS.

It is with a heavy heart that we learnt about the death of 2 CCC supporters in Kwekwe after they were attacked by ZANU PF thugs who were out to disturb the CCC rally held at Mbizo 4 Shopping Centre on 27/02/22 which was addressed by the Party President, President Advocate Nelson Chamisa. The thugs were carrying machetes, iron bars, spears, knives and catapults.

The Kwekwe violence occured a day after ZANU PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his Deputy Constantine Chiwenga promised to unleash violence on the CCC supporters. They were clear that they were going to crush CCC supporters like lice.

It also came a day before The Zimbabwe Republic Police disturbed a CCC rally in Gokwe Centre where they unleashed water canons and teargassed the masses. Elsewhere in St Marys the thugs continue to wreck havoc where petrol bombing was recorded and a female CCC activist was stabbed on 28/02/22.

Zimbabwe is a Constitutional democracy as such it values and respect the sanctity of life as evidenced by Section 48 (1) which clearly states that Every person has the right to life. The violence perpetrators and their handlers must know that man is born with inalienable rights i.e God given rights which man cannot take away but only God and amongst these is the right to life.

The people’s right to support a political party of their choice as articulated by Section 67 (1) (b) which states that every Zimbabwean citizen has the right to make political choices freely and which is further buttressed by Section 67 (2) (a) must be respected.

Spurred by the above noted unexpected events we call upon those bent on turning the political environment into a boxing ring to desist and refrain from that and allow reason to take its place. We call upon them to think with their brains and not their muscles.

We also call upon the Zimbabwe Republic Police to do its constitutional duties by protecting the people and stop terrorising them. It must be noted that chief amongst the duties of the Police is to uphold the Constitution as enunciated by Section 219 (1) (e).

Realising the magnitude of the matter at hand in Kwekwe we call upon the number 1 citizen of the land President Emmerson Mnangagwa who himself is from Kwekwe to act and see to it that the perpetrators are arrested.

He must protect citizens as he is the President of all including CCC cadres. Concerned by the violence we further call upon the number 1 citizen to stop uttering speeches that incite violence.
ZEAT fostering democratic elections.

Health Tips: How To Wear Your Mask Properly

Keep yourself and others safe: Do it all!

Protect yourself and those around you:

Get vaccinated as soon as it’s your turn and follow local guidance on vaccination.
Keep physical distance of at least 1 metre from others, even if they don’t appear to be sick. Avoid crowds and close contact.

Wear a properly fitted mask when physical distancing is not possible and in poorly ventilated settings.

Clean your hands frequently with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
Cover your mouth and nose with a bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of used tissues immediately and clean hands regularly.
If you develop symptoms or test positive for COVID-19, self-isolate until you recover.

Wear a mask properly
To properly wear your mask:

Make sure your mask covers your nose, mouth and chin.
Clean your hands before you put your mask on, before and after you take it off, and after you touch it at any time.
When you take off your mask, store it in a clean plastic bag, and every day either wash it if it’s a fabric mask or dispose of it in a trash bin if it’s a medical mask.

Don’t use masks with valves.

Make your environment safer
The risks of getting COVID-19 are higher in crowded and inadequately ventilated spaces where infected people spend long periods of time together in close proximity.

Outbreaks have been reported in places where people have gather, often in crowded indoor settings and where they talk loudly, shout, breathe heavily or sing such as restaurants, choir practices, fitness classes, nightclubs, offices and places of worship.

To make your environment as safe as possible:

Avoid the 3Cs: spaces that are closed, crowded or involve close contact.
Meet people outside. Outdoor gatherings are safer than indoor ones, particularly if indoor spaces are small and without outdoor air coming in.

If you can’t avoid crowded or indoor settings, take these precautions:
Open a window to increase the amount of natural ventilation when indoors.

Election Watchdog Wary Of Escalating Violence

Officers Demoralised. Police Service Could Collapse

By A Correspondent- Zimbabwe’s police service could collapse if no urgent action is taking to lift the morale of police officers through better pay, fixing key infrastructure and providing modern operational tools, a cross-party parliamentary committee has warned.

The “morale of officers across the entire police service was at its lowest ebb despite their demonstration of resilience and patriotism” and “further procrastination to redress the various challenges in the entire organisation has the potential of collapsing the policing system due to increased indiscipline and poor service delivery,” the portfolio committee on defence, home affairs and security services said.

The committee conducted an inquiry into the state of infrastructure and service delivery by the Zimbabwe Republic Police between October and November last year.

In a report presented to parliament, the MPs said “the state of infrastructure across the 10 provinces leaves a lot to be desired.”

“Dilapidated institutional and residential accommodation, poor ablution facilities resulting in officers opting for the bush system, obsolete office furniture, inadequate tools of trade, use of ineffective policing equipment which is inconsistent with contemporary policing technology, inadequate transport and fuel supplies are just but a few of the many signs and symptoms of an ailing policing system,” the lawmakers said.

The committee, chaired by retired Brigadier General Levy Mayihlome (Zanu-PF), said it “deduced that the majority of the challenges faced by the ZRP are a result of underfunding and delayed release of funds by the treasury.”

The committee said accounting mechanisms could be put in place to allow the ZRP to retain some funds, including fines and proceeds from its economic activities.

Lawmakers found that police stations, especially in rural areas, had no working landline phones with officers using their personal mobile phones to conduct business.

The report went on: “Poor remuneration and lack of incentives have the potential of fueling collusion and corruption amongst members of the police service, especially along the country’s borders thereby affecting service delivery and compromising the security of the nation.

“The use of personal communication devices and computers in policing seriously compromises the security of information and should be discouraged at all costs.

“The absence of an integrated communication system that promotes intra-station, inter-station, intra-district and inter-district, intra and inter-provincial linkages has far-reaching implications on effective policing and service delivery. A switch to the use of contemporary and robust communication devices and strategies that are in tandem with global policing trends should be prioritised by the relevant ministry if improvements on service delivery are to be realised.”

Members of the public have “lost confidence in the service delivery of the ZRP due to increasing cases of indiscipline especially among junior staff officers within and outside the working environment,” the MPs said.

The MPs were critical of the state of the general infrastructure at police stations, including holding cells where suspects are detained before making a court appearance.

“Ventilation was very poor in the majority of cells that were visited by the committee. Some had toilets which were no longer usable. In worse scenarios, some stations did not have holding cells thereby resorting to using charge offices for detaining suspects while others used wooden or metal shacks which were hardly secure for the purpose. This was noted as risking the lives of both officers and suspects in one way or the other,” the MPs noted.

There was also a “scarcity of food and linen for detained suspects.”

“Suspects depended on food provisions from their relatives. In worst scenarios, officers at the stations would provide their personal food to feed detained suspects,” the report said.

The MPs want police officers being transferred to receive a disturbance allowance. They want MPs deployed to “harsh environments” like Kariba, Hwange, Mount Darwin, Nyamapanda and Chiredzi where temperatures are extremely high to receive “heat allowances.”

Allowances should also be paid to officers leaving outside police camps to help with their rentals; undercover officers who do not wear uniforms as well as travel and subsistence.

The ZRP, the lawmakers found, requires about 7,000 vehicles to function efficiently but it currently has 2,167 and only 807 of those were on the road.

It was observed that in its Charter, the ZRP pledges to answer at least 90 percent of all telephone calls within ten seconds or three rings as well as attend to radio calls within three shouts. But as the MPs found, not only do some police stations not have working landlines, there was also no mobile phone connectivity.

“Police stations, especially those in rural and peri-urban areas, did not have working telephone lines while their radio communication gadgets were down for a long time. Police officers had since resorted to using their personal mobile phones thereby making supervision under this sub core area difficult,” they noted.

“To exacerbate the situation, some stations across police provinces did not have mobile network connectivity, making the state of affairs even direr. Instantaneous inter-station and inter-district communication mechanisms were poor, if not non-existent, particularly in remote areas and thus made effective policing very complicated.”

The report said “most stations” were using computers personally owned by police officers, “whilst some relied on external typing services which had to be paid for, posing threats of having confidential information falling into wrong hands.”

“Contemporary technological equipment such as biometric fingerprint machine, photographing and video filming gadgets, CCTV and scanners for use in information and crime management, is essential in modern day policing,” the MPs said.

ZEC Denies Links With Messy Voters’ Roll

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) has vehemently denied responsibility for the messy voters roll and accused political parties of causing the fiasco by issuing their supporters affidavits with similar addresses during the voter registration exercise.

Pressure groups and opposition political parties have been highly critical of ZEC after discrepancies were identified in the voters roll to be used in the March 26 by-elections.

Two weeks ago, the electoral body came under fire after pressure group Team Pachedu revealed that about 40 people were sometimes registered under one residential address.

ZEC however denied being responsible for the anomaly.

Data experts studying the voters’ roll have unearthed several other anomalies on the voters’ roll, among them names of 3 253 people aged 100 years or more, including 11 who are older than the oldest known surviving person on earth in the Guinness World Book of Records.

This has led to suspicions ZEC was plotting to rig the elections in favour of the ruling party, Zanu-PF.

However, in a statement Friday, ZEC disowned the voters’ roll which was recently leaked, saying the document was tampered with so as to discredit the elections management body.

Zec chief elections officer Utoile Silaigwana said political parties, without naming any, were corruptly issuing affidavits with the same addresses to their supporters to register to vote resulting in the confusion.

He said investigations showed that some affidavits had as many as 40 people sharing the same residential address.

“Some politicians are the chief culprits of this problem. The commission has now and again deliberated on this issue in our multi-party liaison committees, but to no avail,” Silaigwana said.

“They are the ones who facilitate their supporters to be registered and some of them have been doing so during the current voter registration blitz and have set up desks where they commission affidavits for their supporters for presentation to our registration officers as proof of residence,” he said.

“Our registration is done offline and there is no way the commission can tell that there is a high number of people who have registered under the same address.”

Silaigwana said the commission did not have the capacity to determine whether the addresses provided were genuine.

“As long as the proof of residence provided meets the requirements of the law, Zec is obliged to register that voter. The Legislature also seems to have taken this into account and provided for objection by voter procedures in the law,” he said.

“In terms of sections 28 of the Electoral Act, a voter may object to the retention of any name of the voters’ roll of the constituency in which the object’s voter is registered and he or she may request the removal of such a person’s name from the voters’ roll. The onus to object to the registration of any name on the voters’ roll is, therefore, squarely on those who are aggrieved.”

But the parties, in separate interviews, refused to take the blame.

Zanu-PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa challenged Zec to name and shame the political parties involved in the alleged scam.

“Zanu-PF, as the ruling party, stands by the laws of the land which it played a principal role is sponsoring and voting through Parliament, laws which the President (Emmerson Mnangagwa) who is its party leader assented to,” Mutsvangwa said.

“Clearly, the averted statement shows the law being transgressed. If it is true, then Zec and other associated law enforcement agencies should bring culprits to book regardless of party affiliation.”

Citizens Coalition for Change interim vice-president Tendai Biti rubbished ZEC’s claims, saying: “This is the body that has not been playing fair and independent. So it should zip its mouth shut. The key issue here is that the resident requirement would then make sense and they place difficulties on citizens.”

“So, Zec can’t attack the lawyers and commissioners that are trying to help people that are desperate.”

MDC Alliance leader Douglas Mwonzora said: “It’s not the fault of the political party at all….Anyway, phone the spokesperson of the party. I no longer want to comment.”

Harare Man Defrauds Air Zim

By A Correspondent- A 44 year old Harare resident yesterday appeared before magistrate Yeukai Dzuda charged with defrauding Air Zimbabwe of US$127 000.

Dzuda remanded Washington Hamunakwadi to today for trial date after granting him $20 000 bail.

Hamunakwadi was represented by Takunda Nyambira.

The State alleges that in 2016, Hamunakwadi illegally entered into the Air Zimbabwe staff residential area masquerading as a caretaker.

He later allegedly leased the properties to six tenants after claiming to be the rightful owner of the houses.

It is alleged that he collected rentals amounting to US$127 000 between 2016 and 2022 until the matter was uncovered, leading to his arrest.

Lyntee Gwarisa prosecuted.

In an unrelated case, Geofree Nyagadza also appeared before Dzuda charged with defrauding the Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund (Zimdef).

Nyagadza was remanded out of custody to March 28 for a trial date on $80 000 bail.

According to court papers, sometime between November 25 2020 and January 8 this year, Nyagadza who is a tenant at Zimdef Willowvale flats, doctored receipts for rental payments totalling $135 981, before the scam was unearthed during an audit.

White City Stadium Too Small For President Chamisa Rally

President Chamisa’s Bulawayo rally should have been held in Barbourfields stadium

Wezhira Munya

5 March 2022.

The Bulawayo rally is over subscribed. The White City Stadium is too small for Chamisa.

Cyclone Chamisa is unstoppable

The 2 pictures attached to this article show part of the 35 000 CCC supporters sitting and standing inside the White City stadium and all terraces are full occupied.

There are thousands of CCC supporters outside White City Stadium still to get inside.

My view is that, CCC in Bulawayo should have hold this rally in Barbourfields stadium with sitting capacity of 25 000 and 20 000 people sitting on the playing field.

Chwienga In U-turn Over Violence Against CCC

By A Correspondent- Under fire Vice President Constantine Chiwenga Friday made a climb down on his highly inflammatory statements in which he likened opposition party, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) to parasitical insects, lice, which must be crushed mercilessly.

Chiwenga made the remarks while addressing Zanu-PF supporters in Kwekwe last Saturday.

Following Chiwenga’s remarks, a CCC supporter Mboneli Ncube was killed the following day at a rally by thugs identified by police as Zanu-PF youths.

Civil society organisations and opposition parties have since then sharply rebuked the former army chief and asked him to retract the statements.

Addressing Zanu-PF supporters in Bulawayo’s Old Pumula suburb, Chiwenga   appeared to be singing a different tune.

“We also want the election process to be defined by peace. We don’t want any violence. We condemn it and give it the utmost contempt it deserves. Violence is not developmental,” Chiwenga said.

The former Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) commander said Zimbabweans were one people and there is no justification violence.

“Let us remind each other, including those in opposition that being in opposition today is not permanent. So we remain as brothers and sisters of one Zimbabwe. An election is certainly not a justification for any form of violence,” he said.

Chiwenga also accused the MDC-T councillors of running down the city of Bulawayo.

“It is high time that we say enough is enough. We are all aware that Bulawayo City Council, has farms in the peri urban environments, the farms used to be massive sources of employment particularly for the local people, the sad story is that the farms have been parcelled and rented out to council employees,” claimed Chiwenga.

“This council has dismally failed. They have failed the electorate and people of Bulawayo,” said Chiwenga.

“The city council used to own and run numerous strategic business units as part of diversification, so that they do not solely depend on revenue from rates. It is undisputable that such suburbs as Emkahandeni, Entumbane, Magwegwe, Nkulumane, Magwegwe and Pumula were built through ventures run by council. The strategic intervention were crucial for social service safety nets. The business created both employment and recreation for the people.”

“Is it not a shame that the current opposition led councils have selfishly decided to rent out revenue streams to themselves and changed business, where is their conscience,” he claimed.

VP Chiwenga Condemns Violence

By A Correspondent- Vice President Constantino Chiwenga Friday condemned violence saying it is not developmental.

He made the remarks while addressing ZANU PF supporters in Bulawayo

The former army boss speaks amid criticism for his earlier remarks which preceded the murder of Mboneli Ncube, a Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) party supporter who was stabbed at a CCC rally in Kwekwe on Sunday.

Chiwenga had likened the opposition CCC to lice that will be crushed when the time is ripe, remarks that were viewed by civil society organisations and opposition parties as inciting violence. Some defended him saying it was figurative.Addressing ZANU PF supporters in Bulawayo’s Old Pumula suburb, Chiwenga preached peace.

He said:

We also want the election process to be defined by peace. We don’t want any violence. We condemn it and give it the utmost contempt it deserves. Violence is not developmental.

Let us remind each other, including those in opposition that being in opposition today is not permanent. So we remain as brothers and sisters of one Zimbabwe. An election is certainly not a justification for any form of violence.

In the past, Zimbabwe recorded an increase in cases of both intra-party and inter-party violence shortly before, during and after elections.

The lastest rise in political violence, therefore, causes great concern amongst observers considering that the Southern Africa country is gearing for the 26 March by-elections and 2023 harmonised elections.

Dozens Of CCC Supporters Injured In Mabvuku Harare

By A Correspondent- Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) vice president Tendai Biti and dozens of his supporters were Friday injured after they were attacked with stones by suspected ZANU PF activists in Mabvuku, Harare.

Biti was campaigning in the Mabvuku suburb ahead of the 26 March By-elections, when his convoy was intercepted by the assailants who threw stones.

reports that Biti’s campaign vehicles were severely damaged in the skirmishes, as Biti himself sustained a swollen arm after he was hit during the attack.

The former Finance Minister described the incident as barbaric and called on the electorate to dump the “unelectable, violent” ruling party in the upcoming by-elections.

This comes when Biti’s home was attacked by 4 men armed with machetes, axes and a gun in the early hours of this Wednesday. His guard was attacked and suffered bad injuries to his head and had to receive urgent medical attention. The men did not take anything.

Mnangagwa Campaigns For Chamisa

By- Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa mentioned Citizens Coalition Leader Nelson Chamisa at his Friday Chegutu rally.

Mnangagwa said:
“Time has come to build the nation, you heard this young man (Nelson Chamisa) bragging that if he gets into State House he will invite white people to help him rule, and I have said that can never because a country can only be developed by its own, investors can only come to Zimbabwe on our own terms not to take back the country to former colonisers”.

ZEC Says Has Registered 77 000 New Voters

By- The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) said it had registered 77 000 new voters and accredited 352 local and foreign observers for the March 26 by-elections.

ZEC’s chief elections officer Mr Utloile Silaigwana said this during a workshop with the Portfolio Committee on Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs on the level of preparedness for the elections.

He said of the 352 observers accredited as at February 28, 342 were local with the rest being foreign diplomats from local embassies.

The ZEC chief elections officer also told the committee that 76 661 new registrants had been registered while 50 486 had transferred during the registration blitz held last month.
“The figures are, however, low despite the publicity campaigns carried out by the commission,” he said.
Mr Silaigwana added that a second registration blitz would be held next month and would run concurrently with a similar campaign by the Registrar-General’s Office for people to obtain national identity documents.

On issues concerning the voters roll raised on social media by Team Pachedu, he said allegations had not been formally presented to ZEC in terms of the law.

“The commission is still investigating the circumstances under which an alleged national voters’ roll was issued to the said party and which alleged copy we presume is the subject of the damaging allegations which are being flighted on social media.
“The commission still insists that the copy that was furnished to the said party was released without following normal administrative procedure and undergoing the proper procedure aimed at ensuring that all its information is up to date and correct as at the date of issue,” he said.

MDC T Mwonzora held its rally in Mkoba hall, about 88 people attended this rally. Traditionally , MDC T used to pull thousands of people in Mkoba, Gweru. But under Mwonzora MDC T is attracting less than 100 people. Pathetic.

(See MDC T Mwonzora rally in pictures attached to this article)

MDC T president Mwonzora was accompanied by national leaders secretary general Mpariwa, chairpesron Komichi and youth chair Musarurwa.

Chair person Komichi and his president Mwonzora looked dejected by poor attendence. It seems the gods are punishing them.

The insider information says, MDC T vice president Mudzuri and his faction failed to attend this poorly attended rally. Factionalism rocks MDC T.

In their speeches Mwonzora, Komichi and other speakers were attacking President Chamisa and his supporters.

It seems MDC T leaders have anger issues against President Chamisa’s success. President Chamisa’s rally are highly subscribed with over
60 000 attended his Zimbabwe grounds rally in Harare.

Yesterday, the Cyclone yellow led by caring President Chamisa and many national leaders attended the burial of Mr Ncube in Vungu, Midlands.

Mr Ncube was killed by a spear by Zanu PF members whilst at Citizens Coalition for Change in Kwekwe.

Today, over 50 000 Bulawayo residents are expected attend President Chamisa’s rally. There is great excitement among Bulawayo residents as they welcome Wamba.

On the other hand, Zanu PF will hold its in Tsholotsho . Mnangagwa is expected to addressed bussed supporters to his rally.

Mnangagwa Launches Command Clean-Up Programme

By- President Emmerson Mnangagwa has hinted that his government would implement a compulsory National Clean-Up Day.

In the forced clean-up campaign, Mnangagwa said the business community would be forced to set aside two hours during the first Friday of each month to clean their surroundings.

Mnangagwa started in 2018 and did it on the first Friday of every month.

Yesterday Mnangagwa led a Clean-Up programme in Chegutu’s Kaguvi High-Density Suburb ward before addressing a Zanu PF rally.

Mnangagwa Attacks Mwonzora

By- Zanu PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa has attacked the opposition MDC parties and said that he was not associated with any of them.

Mnangagwa said this in Chegutu on Friday, when he was addressin a Zanu PF rally

“We are going for by-elections, some seats came through deaths but the majority came through recalls from Parliament by the opposition. They are always plotting against each other, but they want to blame Zanu PF. We have nothing with their troubles, they write to Parliament and a person is recalled”.

The opposition party that recalled MPs is the MDC that Daglous Mwozora is leading.

ZEC Speaks On Elections Observers

Bulawayo Man Hacks Wife’s S-x Tape, Runs Amok

By-A Bulawayo man has been arrested for beating up his wife and threatening to burn his in-laws’ house after stumbling on a s-x tape of his wife in a sexual encounter with another man.

Last Phiri (37) of Old Pumula suburb got wind that his wife Monica Ncube (34) was two-timing him with another man. A friend gave him a sex tape which he used to confront his wife.

Zanu PF Thugs Deface CCC Campaign Posters

By- The opposition Citizen Coalition for Change’s aspiring parliamentary and council candidates in Marondera have filed a police report over the defacing of their campaign posters ahead of the March 26 by-elections.

Marondera Central Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) candidate Caston Matewu claimed that his posters were being defaced on daily basis.
The case is being investigated under RRB 5033552.

“My posters are being defaced or removed on a daily basis and replaced with those of a Zanu PF candidate.

This is a violation of the Electoral Act. I have since reported the matter to police, and nothing has been done yet,” Matewu said.

The Marondera Central seat fell vacant after the recall of Matewu by the Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC-T.
Six councillors were also recalled.
Matewu will contest against Zanu PF’s Ignatius Mateveke, MDC Alliance’s Witness Muzavazi and independent candidate Carlos Pindire.
Pindire said the removal of posters was dealing a major blow to his campaign.
“I have three posters left in Marondera. This is unfair, the ground is not even. I am an independent candidate who is campaigning using personal funds where do I get money from to print posters daily? I have since resorted to campaigns using fliers instead of posters,” he said.
Muzawazi described the removal of posters as unfair.
Efforts to get a comment from Zanu PF were fruitless.
Opposition parties have been complaining of unfair electoral practices which they said favoured the ruling party.
Speaking during an Open Parly discussion yesterday, CCC deputy spokesperson Ostallos Sibiza said the electoral environment was uneven.
“Zanu PF does its rallies without application from the police. State securocratic institutions, in particular, the police at Zanu PF rallies provide security securing everyone at a programme that is a party one and not a government one and so forth,” Newsday
Siziba said.
Lead secretary-general Precious Musarurwa said: “While we believe that the regime’s style of doing business during elections has always remained the same, I believe we are at a stage as opposition parties to claim our space and work towards achieving the goals we promised the electorate.”

Chiredzi Man Fakes Mother’s Death To Claim Insurance

By- A 38-year-old Chiredzi man who duped the company into believing that his dead mother was still alive before going on to open a life assurance policy for her and claiming money a year later has been convicted.

Phillip Kasu was slapped with a five-year jail term after he pleaded guilty to fraud when he appeared before Ms Fungai Muringi at Mutasa Magistrates’ Court.
Kasu will serve an effective three-year jail term after two years were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
Public prosecutor, Mr Tinashe Madziwa said the offence was committed in January 2021.
“On August 1, 2020, Kasu’s mother, Mrs Ethel Kasu died and was buried under the Johanne Marange Church customs. The death was not registered.
“On January 15, 2021, Kasu hatched a plan to defraud Econet Mutare and registered his mother under the EcoSure Premium package on the pretext that she was alive and he was the beneficiary of that policy. The accused person started paying monthly premiums,” said Mr Madziwa.
On December 10, 2021, Kasu approached his village head, Mr Rufairi Tafamombe and ordered him to stamp and sign a blank page.
Kasu went home and fraudulently wrote on the blank page that his mother had died on December 5, 2021.
Equipped with the letter, Kasu went to Mutasa Registrar General’s office and produced an affidavit plus the letter for processing of a death certificate.
He was subsequently issued with the document.
Kasu then went to Econet Mutare to claim a payment from his mother’s policy.
He submitted the death certificate, as well as a claim form signed by Fungai Kasu and Enock Gwetanyi corroborating that Mrs Ethel Kasu had died on December 5, 2021.
The offence was discovered just before $750 000 was transferred into the accused person’s ZB account. Manica Post

Sanctions Maintained Against Army Run Entity Over Rights Abuses

State owned arms manufacturing company, the Zimbabwe Defence Industries (ZDI), remains under the tight grip of European Union (EU) sanctions due to the reported role of security forces in alleged human rights violations, the bloc disclosed to the Zimbabwe Independent this week.

ZDI was slapped with sanctions by the EU in 2001 together with the late former president Robert Mugabe and key figures in the ruling Zanu-PF party when the country plunged into an abyss of violence.

Over the years, while the bloc has gradually eased its restrictive measures on some targeted political leaders, it has tightened its punitive stance on ZDI.

The EU Delegation in Zimbabwe this week said ZDI has over the decades remained under the sanctions due to documented human rights “transgressions”.

In the aftermath of the 2018 elections which were narrowly won by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, security forces were involved in bloody clashes with civilians who were protesting against perceived delays by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) to announce poll results.

This was barely a year after Mugabe had been toppled through a military coup and replaced with Mnangagwa in November 2017. “The arms embargo and the targeted assets freeze against one company, Zimbabwe Defence Industries, remain in place taking into account the situation in Zimbabwe, the role of security forces in human rights abuses as well as the continuing need to investigate past transgressions,” the EU Delegation revealed to the Independent.

“The EU will continue to closely follow developments, with a particular attention to the human rights situation, and recall its readiness to review and adapt the whole range of its policies accordingly.”

Apart from sanctions on the arms manufacturer, the bloc also expressed its concern over the systematic deployment of “lawfare” by the government against opposition supporters.

The EU emphasised that a range of new laws, which it deems constitutes a war against the opposition and civil society through the courts, threatened to shrink Zimbabwe’s democratic space amid efforts by the government to reset frosty relations with the West.

“We are following the situation in Zimbabwe in terms of respect for human rights, and the 27 Member States assessed recently that it has not improved,” the EU Delegation said.

“Intimidation of political opposition and other government critics has continued to restrict the democratic and civic space, which is under threat of shrinking further, through the Data Protection Act and on-going legislative processes such as the Private Voluntary Organisations Amendment Bill and the envisaged so-called ‘Patriotic Act’.

“The EU is concerned about these developments and perpetrators of human rights violations should be swiftly brought to justice.”

The bloc also expressed concern over reports by the civil society that Zec’s conduct in discharging its mandate was questionable.

“Zec is the formal institution in charge of elections and, as such, responsible for delivering according to its mandate. One of the key recommendations of the European Observer Mission (EOM) of 2018 related to the independence of the Commission. Several questions have now arisen related to the management of the voters’ roll,” it said.

“Zec needs to make an effort to respond to queries made in the interest of credibility. Transparency is of the essence. Some organisations, such as Zimbabwe Election Support Network (Zesn), have called for an independent audit of the voters’ roll.

“We would welcome any measure, such as the audit, that reinforces the transparency and building of trust,” the EU Delegation added.

Zimbabwe will on March 26 hold by-elections whose build-up has been characterised by violence, which has since resulted in the death of one person, who was attending a Citizens Coalition for Change rally in Kwekwe at the weekend.

“We have noted with serious concern the recent escalation of political violence and we call for an immediate end to it in order for Zimbabwe to progress towards free, fair and peaceful by-elections. A level playing field for campaigning has to be guaranteed and everyone should be able to exercise her or his rights due to all citizens in a democracy without fear,” the EU Delegation said.

“All parties should explicitly condemn political violence and refrain from inflammatory rhetoric. Those who are responsible for violence should be brought to justice.

“The EU expresses its sincere condolences for the loss of life and wishes a speedy recovery to victims.”

Khupe Could Make A Surprise Appearance At Chamisa’s Byo Rally

MDC-T president Thokozani Khupe is set to make a surprise appearance at Citizens Coalition for Change’s (CCC) Bulawayo rally on Saturday, according to sources.

An alliance is said to be a possibility, with reports Khupe is open to a reunion with former co-deputy in then united MDC-T Nelson Chamisa who now leads the CCC.

Despite having been a thorn in Chamisa’s flesh for over two years as they fought over leadership of a party that is falling apart, Khupe is said to be confident her overtures will be positively received.

“The president could be at White City stadium on Saturday,” said the source.

“If she does make it to the rally, this will be confirmation she is coming back, rejoining her former comrades in the opposition party.”

Chamisa declared the party was open to all at a by-election launch rally at Zimbabwe Grounds in Harare, emphasising however that anyone they had worked with in the past would only join the party on the basis they “move to the back of the bus.”

“We know there are others who once left us and want to rejoin, we will direct that they seat at the back of this bus upon readmission,” Chamisa said.

Contacted for comment Khupe’s spokesperson Ntandoyenkosi Ndlovu said a day in politics was too long hence he could only answer such inquiries on Saturday.

“We do not have any plans regarding the weekend CCC rally. In politics a day is too long for one to decide on what they are going to be doing over the weekend, we will let you know on Saturday,” said Ndlovu.

The meeting between Khupe and CCC deputy president Welshman Ncube sent tongues wagging and set the tone for discussions and arguments on her readmission.

Her recent decisions to castigate violence meted on CCC supporters in Kwekwe by Zanu-PF youths and calls for the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) and police to investigate the matter have also fueled speculation.

Khupe has been hinting at a unified front at the 2023 harmonised elections, calling for “unity among opposition political parties” ahead of the polls.

“Unity among opposition political parties is of paramount importance to confront Zanu-PF. The formidable force must start to speak with one voice. It must start to vote with one voice. It’s high time as opposition we combine and start to converge citizens together and fight for the common cause which is the new Zimbabwe,” said Khupe at her Wednesday press conference.

Speak Out Against Violence, Mnangagwa Told

Political commentators yesterday urged President Emmerson Mnangagwa to speak up and act following a resurgence of political violence that claimed the life of an opposition supporter in Kwekwe last week as campaigning for the March 26 by-elections heats up.

There have been sporadic reports of violence in different parts of the country allegedly spearheaded by suspected Zanu PF supporters.

Zanu PF has denied the charges and accused the opposition of stage-managing the violence to excite its “Western sponsors”.

Political analyst Kudakwashe Munemo said there were different interpretations that could be drawn if the President did not act on the political violence.

“The infrastructure of violence is quite complex in Zimbabwe. The structures are set up and motivated by the same people holding government offices. As such, it may be difficult for the President to call off such barbaric acts as the available evidence suggests that it was well-planned and the perpetrators are aligned to Zanu PF,” Munemo said.

“Voicing out and acting on it is ideal as demanded by the position he holds, it may bring sanity. Remaining silent may also be regarded as a language of its own, one which when interpreted means he is in support of shrinking political space for Citizens Coalition for Change and the broader populace.”

Another political commentator Vivid Gwede said government’s silence on the incidences of violence alleged to have been perpetrated by suspected ruling party members was concerning.“Any Zimbabwean government at any particular time has a constitutional duty to protect the rights and the security of all citizens, including calling for peace and condemning violent actions,” he said.

“Besides the duty of the police being to arrest and the courts to try perpetrators, there should be the unequivocal voice of the political leadership in promoting peace.”

Social and political analyst Methuseli Moyo added: “If the violence continues, the President would have to comment. For now, the police and the respective leadership of the political parties can do anti-violence advocacy. It should help. It is incumbent on all leaders to preach peace. Otherwise 2023 will be bad in terms of political violence.”

Norton legislator Temba Mliswa (Independent) also took to Twitter to urge Mnangagwa to speak up.

“We know the truth about political violence in Zimbabwe as it is already documented. A well-meaning government faces it head-on and doesn’t play politics while people die. Power is temporary and should not intoxicate us into being insensitive and coarse as humans,” Mliswa tweeted.

Zimbabwe has a history of political violence dating back as far back as the watershed 1980 elections.

Man Dies After Taking Libido Boosting Concoction

By-A man from Chizororo village under Headman Gumunyu in Gokwe North died after he allegedly consumed beer laced with a concoction meant to enhance his libido.

Herimani Tererai Mudhefi, who was popularly known as Chitova in his area, died after he was allegedly given the concoction by Livison Chizema also popularly known as Mabvuhu from Tavengwa village.

Mudhefi died a few days later at Mutora Clinic where he had been taken for treatment.
There are, however, two versions to Mudhefi’s death with some claiming he was given the concoction by Chizema under the pretext that it was meant to boost his libido while others are claiming it was a kidney-cleansing concoction.
Mudhefi’s still mystified family is reportedly demanding answers from Chizema.
According to a source from the area who claimed to have intimate details of the shocking incident, the deceased felt pain and started vomiting soon after drinking the “poisoned” beer.
“His family is still shocked by the incident and is demanding answers from Chizema. What happened is that the two were drinking beer when Chizema gave Mudhefi a concoction claiming it was meant to enhance his libido though some are saying he lied to him that it was meant to clean his kidneys.
Chizema sternly instructed him that he should drink the concoction alone since he was the one who had a problem.
“A seemingly unsuspicious Mudhefi went on to lace his beer with the concoction and subsequently consumed it,” said the source who declined to be named.
Chizema is reported to have told the now deceased that if he felt pain, it meant the muthi was working.
After about 10 minutes, Mudhefi is reported to have started vomiting and seeing that his victim’s condition had started deteriorating, Chizema disappeared from the scene.
“Mudhefi was vomiting now and again after drinking the concoction. When he went home, his wife asked him about the concoction he had consumed and he told her that he was given by Chizema,” said the source.
Mudhefi’s family reportedly summoned Chizema to come and explain to them about the concoction he had given to Mudhefi and he refused.
“He later complied after the family had threatened to dump Mudhefi who was writhing in agony at his home. When they asked him about the concoction, he said he got it from his daughter-in-law.
When investigations were made, it then emerged that Chizema had deliberately swapped the concoction he was given by his daughter-in-law with the one suspected to have been laced with poison”.
Added the source: “They tried to save him, by taking him to Musadzi Clinic and he was later transferred to Mutora Hospital where he later died. The doctor who attended to him before he died told his family that it was poison”.
A post mortem was reportedly not conducted since the matter was not reported to the police.
Although Headman Gumunyu was not available for comment, B-Metro established that he had since summoned village heads – Chizororo and Tavengwa to discuss the matter.
Chief Chireya, under whose jurisdiction Headman Gumunyu’s area falls, said the matter was yet to come to his attention. B Metro

Presidential Guards Caught in The Act

Three more soldiers (serving and retired) from the First Presidential Guard Battalion appeared at Chitungwiza Magistrates Court yesterday morning facing armed robbery charges.

The three appeared before Magistrate Tendai Mutamba on the same day that a different group of soldiers and Policemen were appearing at Masvingo Magistrates Court in a different case of armed robbery. Zimbabwe is facing a spate of armed robbery cases committed by members of the security forces. Shadreck Kadira (33), (retired) Force Number 832196K, Munyaradzi Munyuki (27) Force Number 843244T and Busani Moyo (29) Force Number 840921T allegedly robbed a Beatrice white farmer of US$ 2 135 and property valued at $722. The robbery allegedly happened on Monday at Houmoed Farm, Beatrice and the court heard that the soldiers were armed with a pistol. The Mirror attended the court case which is under CRB73-5/22 and was postponed to March 15, 2022. Three other suspects also believed to be members of the National Army are still at large, according to the State. It is the State case that on February 28 at 8pm the soldiers broke into a cottage at the farm where Luke Williams (19) was sleeping, dragged him out of the house and robbed him of US$250 and an iPhone XR, a bracelet and a knife. The robbers then proceeded to the main house and attacked David George Rickards (67) who was in the dining room and his wife Philliper Rickards (62) who was sleeping in the bedroom. They demanded money and got US$850 that was in Philliper’s purse. The robbers then force-marched Williams, David and Philliper to the farm office where they opened a safe box with $1 000 RIGS in $5 notes which the robbers left. They switched off the farmhouse lights which triggered an alarm and they escaped. Philliper’s son Jack Richards (36) called Beatrice Police who setup a trap and arrested the three at the 20km peg into Harare where a roadblock was mounted. The other three robbers went in a different direction and are still at large. -Masvingo

EU Maintains Sanctions On Zimbabwe Defence Industries

STATE-OWNED arms manufacturing company, the Zimbabwe Defence Industries (ZDI), remains under the tight grip of European Union (EU) sanctions due to the reported role of security forces in alleged human rights violations, the bloc disclosed to the Zimbabwe Independent this week.

Storing potatoes

Storage of potatoes is also key to getting a bumper harvest. Storing your potatoes has a lot of good benefits.

Not only can you stop losing an amount of your harvest every year to disease, but you can also hold them until a time when the markets are better.

Form a group with your neighbours to sell to large potato buyers. It is easier to sell 1000 bags than 100 bags. You will get a bigger profit.

Store potatoes in a Charcoal store

A good way to store your potatoes is using a charcoal cooler store.

Build a big charcoal store with your neighbours. Store your potato crop for up to 3-4 months.
The open walls are made of mesh wire packed with charcoal.

The charcoal is always kept wet by water from a tank. Water evaporates from the charcoal which takes heat from inside the store. The store is therefore kept very cold. It is also dark – perfect for potatoes!

Make sure the bags do not touch the walls.

Benefits of the charcoal store.

No electricity needed, just water.

Can be used to store many different fruits and vegetables.

They stop fruits and vegetables from drying out.

Easy to build.

If many farmers join together to build the store, it is not expensive.

Cheap to maintain.

Man Stumbles On Own Wife’s Bedroom Tape

A man from Bulawayo who stumbled on a sex tape of his wife in a sexual encounter with another man has been dragged to court after he beat her, threatened to kill her and set her parents’ house on fire.

Last Phiri (37) of Old Pumula suburb got wind that his wife Monica Ncube (34) was two-timing him with another man. A friend gave him a sex tape which he used to confront his wife. Phiri asked her why she cheated on him, but she vehemently denied. He showed her a sex tape that she had recorded with her lover in their matrimonial bedroom before he grabbed her by the neck and punched her in the face and all over the body. Ncube managed to free herself from his tight grip and sprinted to a police station and reported the matter. Phiri was then arrested. While the pair were at the police station, Phiri became violent as he threatened to kill his wife and said he would then burn her parents’ house as he alleged that they were influencing her to cheat on him. Last appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Shepherd Mnjanja for physical abuse as defined in Section 3(1)(a) of the Domestic Violence Act chapter 5:16 and threats as defined in section 186(1) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9:23. He pleaded not guilty to the physical abuse charge, but pleaded guilty to a charge of threats. He was remanded out of custody to next week on Wednesday for sentencing. -B Metro

Chiwenga Says Chamisa CCC Will Create Fake Violence Against Selves Today

ZANU PF has sensationally claimed that Nelson Chamisa’s Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporters were plotting to stage-manage violence while wearing Zanu PF regalia at the opposition party’s campaign rally in Bulawayo today to discredit the ruling party.
The ruling party’s Bulawayo provincial youth chairperson Freedom Murechu told Southern Eye that the alleged plot was part of the opposition party’s smear campaign against Zanu PF.

Chamisa is expected to address a campaign rally at White City Stadium today to drum up support for the party’s candidates ahead of the March 26 by-elections.

“We have gathered intelligence that CCC has acquired Zanu PF regalia and it is planning to cause violence here in Bulawayo using our regalia. We are aware of all their plans and our leaders have advised us to remain peaceful. We will not mingle in their thing, but we will be doing our own programmes,” Murechu said on the sidelines of a Zanu PF rally addressed by Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga at Silwane grounds in Pumula.

His remarks came in the wake of last weekend’s skirmishes at a CCC rally in Mbizo, Kwekwe, where suspected Zanu PF members fatally stabbed an opposition activist and injured several others.

“But let me warn them that we are the vanguards of the revolution. We will not fold our hands and watch them attack us. We will defend the revolution and ourselves,” Murechu added.

However, CCC Bulawayo provincial spokesperson Swithern Chirowodza dismissed the allegations and urged party supporters to attend the rally in their numbers saying their security was guaranteed.

“We have always done our best [on security],” Chirowodza.

“Remember a few years ago, there was a man who was removed from the stadium for sabotage. The man wore military fatigue under his clothes. We also intercepted four men who tried to burn a bus outside White City Stadium on September 2, 2017. This speaks to the vigilance of our security, hence people will be very safe.”

Meanwhile, Chiwenga yesterday also led a clean-up campaign in the city, where he urged the youth to play an active role in protecting their environment.

“It is our expectations that the youths will also actively participate in recycling activities for environmental restoration and income generation. I, therefore, call upon local authorities, non-governmental organisations and development partners to assist youths that approach them with a view to engage in recycling activities,” he said. -Newsday

U.S. Extends Sanctions On Harare

The By-United States of America has extended sanctions on Zimbabwe.

The Us President Joe Biden announced the extension of the sanctions in a statement released by the White House, Thursday.

Below is the statement:

On March 6, 2003, by Executive Order 13288, the President declared a national emergency and blocked the property of certain persons, pursuant to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (50 U.S.C. 1701-1706), to deal with the unusual and extraordinary threat to the foreign policy of the United States constituted by the actions and policies of certain members of the Government of Zimbabwe and other persons to undermine Zimbabwe’s democratic processes or institutions.

These actions and policies had contributed to the deliberate breakdown in the rule of law in Zimbabwe, to politically motivated violence and intimidation in that country, and to political and economic instability in the southern African region.

On November 22, 2005, the President issued Executive Order 13391 to take additional steps with respect to the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13288 by ordering the blocking of the property of additional persons undermining democratic processes or institutions in Zimbabwe.

On July 25, 2008, the President issued Executive Order 13469, which expanded the scope of the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13288 and authorized the blocking of the property of additional persons undermining democratic processes or institutions in Zimbabwe.

The actions and policies of certain members of the Government of Zimbabwe and other persons to undermine Zimbabwe’s democratic processes or institutions continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the foreign policy of the United States.

For this reason, the national emergency declared on March 6, 2003, and the measures adopted on that date, on November 22, 2005, and on July 25, 2008, to deal with that emergency, must continue in effect beyond March 6, 2022.

Therefore, in accordance with section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)), I am continuing for 1 year the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13288.

This notice shall be published in the Federal Register and transmitted to the Congress.

Mutsvangwa “Bans” NGOs

Own Correspondent
The ZANU PF spokesperson Chris Mutsvangwa says he doesn’t care about the 18 000 formal jobs under threat from the PVO Bill.

Mutsvangwa made the remarks at a media briefing in Harare on Thursday.

“Those who are working in the NGOs should start looking for other jobs,” he said.

Mutsvangwa accused the social media of tarnishing Zanu PF’s image:

“Violence in Kwekwe, investigations are ongoing, we cannot as a party be accused by social media, it shows that it was a premeditated agenda. Violence was caused by their leaders in the CCC, commanding his youths to drive others out. We are witnessing yellow, it’s a warning that they should desist from thinking they would take the law into their own hands.”

“Why does this always happen in February for the past 20 years? Every February the EU and the US renew sanctions, so there was an effort that something happens in February for the past 20 years and this is not meant for Zimbabwe people, it’s a message for handlers.”

“Deport Passion Java”

Tinashe Sambiri|Exiled opposition activist Godfrey Kurauone and concerned Zimbabweans in the diaspora want the U.S. to deport Panganai Java for enabling violation of human rights in Zimbabwe.

See the change.org report below:
Godfrey Kurauone started this petition to Kamala Harris (Vice President of The United States Of America) and 10 others

The people of Zimbabwe are suffering great atrocities at the hands of the ruling ZANU PF party and the military aided rule Mr. Emmerson Mnangagwa. Since the military coup of 2017, a number of atrocities have occurred against citizens with the most notable being the 1 August 2018 post election violence in which 6 citizens were killed on cold blood.

The second is the 14 and 15 January 2019 protests in which 21 citizens were shot and killed by the army across the country and dozens more gravely injured. Recently, 2 people were killed in ZANU PF and state violence during a rally of the main opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).

While this is happening, Panganai Passion Java, a self proclaimed prophet, enjoys permanent resident status in the USA while he goes back to Zimbabwe to actively support a regime that is killing citizens, violating fundamental rights and stealing national resources. He uses State resources to move around the country buying votes for Mr. Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The State Department of the United States has through it’s Secretary of State has the power to begin the process of revoking Mr. Passion Java’s permanent resident status. The USA policy is to support freedom, democracy and prosperity for the people of Zimbabwe and to this end has imposed restrictive measures on individuals who aide human rights violations and undermine democracy in Zimbabwe. Mr. Java is one such culprit and should be sanctioned and barred from coming to the USA and his accounts frozen.

Orlando Pirates Mentor Taunts Billiat

Orlando Pirates co-coach Fadlu Davids has accused Kaizer Chiefs’ Zimbabwean winger Khama Billiat of diving to win penalties.

The pint-sized winger won a stoppage time spot kick when Chiefs met Pirates in the previous Soweto derby and Davids, speaking ahead of the latest instalment of the epic clash slated for Saturday at the Orlando Stadium, threw a dig at Billiat and how he ‘easily goes down’.

“You can go back to how many penalties Kaizer Chiefs have had in the derby. I hope we can be clear in relation to penalty decisions. Clear, structured decisions, neutral on both sides,” Davids told South African publication iDiski Times.

“Yes, you talk about the Billiat incident, but we know Billiat – you touch him, a small contact or any touch inside the box, already he’s diving in the Olympic pool.

“I hope the referees are clear and know these things, knowing that any contact in and around the box and Orlando Pirates concede another penalty. That we can be clear on and know what’s coming, especially with Kaizer Chiefs front three and Billiat,” he added.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Football Association Mourns Ukrainian Soccer Players

Two Ukrainian footballers have been killed while fighting against Russian invaders, global footballers’ union FIFPRO has confirmed.

Vitalii Sapylo (21) and Dmytro Martynenko (25) lost their lives in combat and are believed to be the first football casualties of the eight-day war.

Sapylo was a goalkeeper with third-division side Karpaty Lviv’s youth team, while Martynenko last played for second-division side FC Hostomel. A statement from FIFPRO on Twitter read:

Our thoughts are with the families, friends, and teammates of young Ukrainian footballers Vitalii Sapylo (21) and Dmytro Martynenko (25), football’s first reported losses in this war.

May they both rest in peace.

FIFPRO general secretary Jonas Baer-Hoffman told BBC Radio 5Live that they do not information about the exact number of footballers who are actively involved in the fighting. Baer-Hoffman said:

We’ve had confirmation from the ground, which is of course incredibly sad.

We don’t have clear information on how many of our members are really currently involved directly in the conflict, and of course, there are still hundreds of Ukrainian players, male and female, in the country.

Our union on the ground is effectively working out of bunkers and cellars where they are hiding from the attacks, so it’s a very difficult situation to analyse.

These two players have apparently passed away, as part of this military invasion.

They’re showing how football and sports, in general, is an afterthought because they’re just individuals who unfortunately got caught up in this terrible war.

Sapilo’s father Roman confirmed the death of his son at the frontline to BILD, a German publication. He said:

He was such a happy, fun-loving boy. It was an airstrike by that damn Putin. He took my child from me.

He really wanted to fight. The first tank broke down, then the second, but under no circumstances did he want to leave the front.

He asked for a third party. This armour has brought him eternal sleep.

Man Fakes Mother’s Death Defrauds Insurance Company Of $750K

Manica Post

52 Binga Families Resist Eviction

By-Fifty-two (52) families in Lubimbi, Binga District in Matabeleland North Province say they will resist eviction from the area after it emerged that Hwange Colliery Company was given the grant to extract coal from the area.

Lubimbi ward councillor, Chrispen Munkuli, said the community was already facing eviction to pave way for the construction of the Gwayi-Shangani Dam but they have resolved to resist.

Said Munkuli:

Mining by Hwange will evacuate 52 homesteads, but what we do not know is where the families are going.

We are also facing evacuation over the Gwayi-Shangani Dam and nothing is clear so far on the evacuation areas.

As a community, we have discussed the issue and agreed that we will not agree to the evacuation.

However, we are advised that the mining company is now ready to mine.

District development coordinator (DDC) Land Kabome said he was aware of the issue. He added:

It has not yet reached that level of evacuation but l am aware that HCC was given a mining claim long back.

The colliery is supposed to go to the community and advise the villagers.

We have not yet engaged the community. We will update you because there will be certain things we expect the HCC to do for the community.

Presidential Soldiers Rob Beatrice Farm

By-Three more soldiers (serving and retired) from the First Presidential Guard Battalion appeared at Chitungwiza Magistrates Court yesterday morning facing armed robbery charges.

The robbers then force-marched Williams, David and Philliper to the farm office where they opened a safe box with $1 000 RTGS in $5 notes which the robbers left.
Masvingo Mirror

Zanu PF Defaces Chamisa Allies’ Posters

Will Khupe Chamisa Bulawayo Rally Attendance Add Any Value?

By-There are reports that the former MDC-T deputy president Thokozani Khupe will attend the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) rally set for Bulawayo tomorrow.

Recent reports claim Khupe is open to working together with CCC leader Nelson Chamisa in spite of their acrimonious separation in 2018 following the death of MDC founding president Morgan Tsvangirai.

New Zimbabwe reported sources as saying Khupe could be on the brink of joining hands with CCC following her recent expulsion from the MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora. Said a source:

The president could be at White City Stadium on Saturday. If she does make it to the rally, this will be confirmation she is coming back, rejoining her former comrades in the opposition party.

Khupe’s spokesperson Ntandoyenkosi Ndlovu could neither confirm nor deny that Khupe will grace the CCC rally on Saturday. He said:

We do not have any plans regarding the weekend CCC rally. In politics a day is too long for one to decide on what they are going to be doing over the weekend, we will let you know on Saturday.

Chamisa declared that CCC will welcome all former MDC members but stressed that they will join the party on the basis they “move to the back of the bus.”

He made the remarks while launching the CCC’s by-elections campaign at Zimbabwe Grounds in Harare two weeks ago.

CCC Kwekwe Mboneni Death, Zanu PF Blames EU And America

By A Correspondent- Zanu PF has blamed the European Union and America for the violence that claimed one life of a Citizens Coalition for Change Supporter last Sunday.

Zanu PF thugs disrupted a CCC rally in Kwekwe, killed one person and injured several people.

Addressing the media in Harare Thursday, Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa said they had nothing to do with the violence.

“Violence in Kwekwe, investigations are ongoing, we cannot as a party be accused by social media, it shows that it was a premeditated agenda. Violence was caused by their leaders in the CCC, commanding his youths to drive others out. We are witnessing yellow, it’s a warning that they should desist from thinking they would take the law into their own hands.
“Why does this always happen in February for the past 20 years? Every February the EU and the US renew sanctions, so there was an effort that something happens in February for the past 20 years and this is not meant for Zimbabwe people, it’s a message for handlers. Chamisa parrots the message of puppetry and ZANU PF has nothing to do with violence in Kwekwe,” he said.

Caps United Sign Jimmy Dzingai

Harare giants CAPS United have signed former Zimbabwe international defender Jimmy Dzingai.

The 31-year old former Yadah central defender left Zambian side Nkana in July last year before he went on a trial stint in Jordan.

He has been been training at Makepekepe for a week now and has officially joined the Lloyd Chitembwe-coached side.

The acquisition of Dzingai will be good news for Chitembwe, as he looks to bolster his defence, which conceded six goals against Manica Diamonds at Sakubva Stadium last week. – Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Mutsvangwa Threatens To Ban NGOs

Concerned Citizens Petition U.S. To Deport Passion Java

Libido Concortion Kills Gokwe Man

By A Correspondent- A man from Chizororo village under Headman Gumunyu in Gokwe North died after he allegedly consumed beer laced with a concoction meant to enhance his libido.

B Metro

Act Immediately Before Zim Plunges Into Bloodshed, Chamisa Tells SADC

Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has called for the African Union (AU) and SADC to immediately act before Zimbabwe is plunged into bloodshed following the murder of an opposition party activist by suspected Zanu-PF supporters in Kwekwe on Sunday.

One person identified by police as Mbongeni Ncube, a 35 year-old father of one from Mbizo, was confirmed dead on Monday after suspected Zanu-PF activists besieged a CCC rally in the Midlands province leaving dozens injured.

Police confirmed that at least 16 suspected Zanu-PF activists have since been arrested and investigations are underway.

Chamisa said Zanu-PF was itching for bloodshed and if no action is taken, Zimbabwe will plunge into unprecedented violence reminiscence of the 2008 carnage that saw hundreds of MDC-T supporters dead and thousands maimed.

“A dark cloud over the nation of Zimbabwe as we mourn the passing on of a very important citizen whose life has been cut short by political intolerance, a culture of violence that has been promoted with impunity and immunity,” Chamisa said.

“We are saying it is time to draw a line in the sand. We are saying enough is enough. We can’t continue to lose lives on account of politics,” he fumed during a press conference Monday afternoon a day after the Kwekwe chaos.”

Chamisa said Zanu-PF was clear on its intention to make Zimbabwe ungovernable and create a conducive environment for them to engage in acts of corruption.

The Kwekwe chaos came hardly a day after thousands of the CCC supporters were blocked by police from attending a rally Chamisa was expected to address in Gokwe.

“It is now a political tinderbox, the political situation in the country is worsening, the dark cloud has once again formed and you can see the whole purpose is intended to plunge the country into bloodshed, vulnerability, incessant instability and of course that paves way for those who would want to raid state coffers and those who would want corruption to thrive,” he said.

Chamisa had tough questions for President Emmerson Mnangagwa saying : “How do you think the young people will react to your suppression and how do you think they will feel when you continue to put on the jacket that you are putting on, the jacket of dictatorship? How do you feel Mr Mnangagwa? You always are proud that you fought for the liberation of this country but there is a difference between liberation and oppression.”

“What we are seeing is opposite of that liberation. Is it not the same that you went through under Smith where you were suppressed? Does it even visit your mind that one day you will wake up and you will not be in government? Does it even visit your mind that you also have children and family that have to live in a free and happy Zimbabwe?” Chamisa asked.

“What does this do when you terrorize other people’s families why haven’t you even bothered to visit the Ncube family and pay condolences? That heartlessness is what is going to be a big challenge for the country to move forward.”

“They wanted bloodshed and I was informed prior that they wanted to do this. I am reliably informed that the police were aware.”

“We cannot have a repeat of 2008. We cannot have a repeat of the scenes we have seen in the region where there is instability. To our church, I urge you to pray so that we don’t have the demon of violence does not engulf our country. We don’t want bloodshed.”

The violence has been widely condemned with the United Kingdom Ambassador to Zimbabwe Melanie Robinson saying: “Concerned by reports of violent attacks on opposition supporters at a rally in Kwekwe this weekend. Vital that perpetrators are brought to justice and that all parties can campaign freely without fear of violence.”

Over 130 vacant parliamentary and council seats fell vacant when several politicians were recalled after Chamisa lost a legal battle for the control of the MDC while other slots arose after legislators died. By-elections to fill the posts are slated for 26 March.

The Australian Embassy in Harare also issued a statement saying reports of violence and murder of a CCC activist was concerning and confirmed the need for the government to respect people’s freedoms.

“Reports of political violence and alleged murder very concerning. Underscores    the importance of freedom of speech and assembly and accountability and justice for any abuse thereof,” the Australian Embassy said.

Jonathan Oates, a British Liberal Democrat politician and member of the House of Lords took to microblogging site Twitter to condemn the violence.

“A the corrupt dictatorship tries to destroy democracy in Ukraine, another tries to do the same in Zimbabwe. This is the moment that Zanu-PF thugs attacked a rally at which opposition leader Nelson Chamisa was speaking,” he wrote.

Several civic society organisations and opposition parties including the Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC-T also condemned the violence.

“SADC Must Act Immediately To Stop Repeat Of 2008 Bloodshed” Pleaded Chamisa – GNU Greed Back To Haunt Him And Us All

By Wilbert Mukori- “You never want to do anything that you don’t want your mother to see, because it will haunt you and eventually come back to bite you!” advised the TV personality and author, Kimora Lee Simmons. Advice that served the late Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC cum CCC friends the trials and tribulations of the past coming back to haunt them.

Zanu PF’s blatant cheating and, worse still, the wanton violence of 2008 Zimbabwe elections should have been dealt with during the 2008 to 2013 Government of National Unity (GNU). SADC leaders played the motherly role of forcing Zanu PF to sign the 2008 Global Political Agreement, agreeing to the need for Zimbabwe to implement the raft of democratic reforms to ensure cheating and wanton violence would not the repeated ever again.

The task of implementing the reforms was left to Tsvangirai and his MDC friends. Credit where credit is due, SADC leaders notably SA’s Lindiwe Zulu, did their best to remind the MDC leaders to implement the democratic reforms throughout the GNU but were ignored.

When it became clear that Zimbabwe was going into the 2013 elections with not meaningful reforms in place, SADC leaders stepped in and tried to have the elections postpone.

“In 2013 the Maputo Summit, in June 2013, before the elections, the Maputo Summit was all about having the elections postponed – the SADC summit. I went there,” Dr Ibbo Mandaza told Journalist Violet Gonda.

“I was there at the Summit and Mugabe pretended to agree to a postponement of the elections. If you recall, the postponement was based on the need to reform at least electoral laws.

“And after that Summit, Morgan Tsvangirai, Tendai Biti, Welshman Ncube, all of them were called to a separate meeting by the Heads of State of SADC in the absence of Mugabe, that same evening. And they were told; I was sitting there outside the room with Mac Maharaj; they were told ‘if you go into elections next month, you are going to lose; the (2013) elections are done’.”

As we know MDC leaders ignored the last plea by the SADC leaders just as they had ignored the advice to implement the reforms. Zanu PF went on to blatantly rig the 2013 elections, as SADC leaders had feared would happen.

Again, MDC leaders have ignored the call to implement the reforms before holding the 2018 elections. As expected, Zanu PF again blatantly rigged the 2018 elections too.

In the 2013 and 2018 elections, Zanu PF was fairly confident of winning these elections.

However, Zimbabwe’s worsening economic situation has left the country’s basic services such as education and health care in total collapse and millions are now living in abject poverty. The people are desperate for change and Zanu PF is definitely feeling the political pressure for change. And Zanu PF’s response is to step up the blatant cheating and wanton violence to the same levels as 2008 or worse.

MDC had the golden opportunity to implement the democratic reforms during the 2008 to 2013 GNU and stop Zanu rigging elections; they wasted the opportunity. And now the blatant cheating and wanton violence is back to haunt the nation!

“It is now a political tinderbox, the political situation in the country is worsening, the dark cloud has once again formed and you can see the whole purpose is intended to plunge the country into bloodshed, vulnerability, incessant instability and of course that paves way for those who would want to raid state coffers and those who would want corruption to thrive,” admitted Nelson Chamisa, the leader of CCC following the wanton violence in Midlands over the weekend.

The Police had used teargas and water-cannon to disrupt the CCC rally on Saturday. The following day CCC supporters were attached with stones and machetes. Two people were killed, and several were seriously injured.

“They (Zanu PF) wanted bloodshed and I was informed prior that they wanted to do this. I am reliably informed that the police were aware.

“We cannot have a repeat of 2008. We cannot have a repeat of the scenes we have seen in the region where there is instability. To our church, I urge you to pray so that we don’t have the demon of violence does not engulf our country. We don’t want bloodshed.”

Chamisa also called for the African Union (AU) and SADC to “immediately act before Zimbabwe is plunged into bloodshed”! He did not say what exactly he wanted SADC to do.

Indeed, what can SADC leaders do; given MDC/CCC leaders are not exactly the repented prodigal son.

What SADC leaders can do, is repeat the sound advice they gave MDC leaders in 2013: postpone the 2023 elections until democratic reforms are implemented to stop the cheating and violence. This is the advice MDC leaders did not want to hear back in 2013 and don’t want to hear now for the same reason – greed.

In his Book, The Struggle Continues 50 years of Tyranny in Zimbabwe, David Coltart, former MDC – Ncube Senator and Minister of Education in the 2008 to 2013 GNU, readily admitted that boycotting the elections, as SADC leaders had advised, was the “obvious” solution. He confessed that greed had trumped reason!.

“The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious – withdraw from the (2013) elections,” wrote Senator Coltart.

“The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”

For the record, four of the main MDC factions joined three other parties to form the MDC Alliance (MDC A) before the 2018 elections; they went on to participate in the elections, the possibility of boycotting the elections was never even mentioned. The rump of the MDC A has gone on to form CCC and everyone is determined to participate in the 2023 elections and will not listen to any talk of boycotting the elections for the same reason as before – greed.

As Coltart rightly pointed out, by participating in the flawed elections MDC leaders were undermining SADC leaders’ ability to pressure Zanu PF to implement the reforms and stop the curse of rigged elections. By participating in the flawed elections MDC leaders were giving “credibility” to the flawed process and thus legitimacy to the vote rigging Zanu PF.

“SADC must act immediately before Zimbabwe is plunged into bloodshed!” What can SADC leaders do to force CCC leaders to stop participating in the flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy?

What can SADC leaders do to team Chamisa and company’s greed? Chamisa and company’s greed has come back to haunt CCC and us all!

White House Extends Sanctions On Zim

By A Correspondent- The United States of America has extended sanctions on Zimbabwe.

“We Are Not Responsible”: ZanuPF Distances Self From Kwekwe Violence

By A Correspondent-Zanu PF has said that they were not responsible for the violence that claimed one life of a Citizens Coalition for Change Supporter last Sunday.

Woman In Soup For Beating Up Ex, Grabbing His B-alls

By A Correspondent- A 27 year old woman from Bulawayo’s Emganwini suburb is in trouble with the law after she violated a protection order after she assaulted her ex-boyfriend by grabbing him by the balls.

Innocent Marapuka (27) was granted a protection order against his ex-girlfriend Ncube on 12 July 2021 which requires the accused not to physically abuse her ex-boyfriend.

However, she violated the protection order on 8 November last year at around 7pm when she found Marapuka cleaning his car and grabbed his phone which resulted in them having a misunderstanding.

Ncube then held Marapuka by the collar and pulled his testi_cles and twisted them resulting in him having difficulties walking.

Dr Khupe To Attend Chamisa’s Byo Rally

By A Correspondent- MDC-T president Thokozani Khupe is set to make a surprise appearance at Citizens Coalition for Change’s (CCC) Bulawayo rally on Saturday, according to sources.

We know there are others who once left us and want to rejoin, we will direct that they seat at the back of this bus upon readmission,” Chamisa said.

Man Who Killed Friend Over Ugly Girlfriend Remarks Jailed

By A Correspondent- A Bulawayo man who fatally sta_bbed his friend with a knife for mocking his girlfriend’s looks has been sentenced to an effective 10 years in jail.

Bongani Ngulube (20) of Mpopoma suburb knifed Siphosihle Moyo (19) after he teased his girlfriend over her “ugly” looks.

Ngulube was convicted of murder with constructive intent by Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Christopher Dube-Banda in connection with Moyo’s death.

In passing the sentence, Justice Dube-Banda condemned Ngulube’s actions, saying he deserved a lengthy prison term.

Prosecuting, Mr Trust Muduma said on February 3 last year, Ngulube and Moyo were drinking beer together at a house in Mpopoma suburb when a dispute ensued. This was after Moyo scoffed at Ngulube’s girlfriend, saying she was ugly.

Ngulube was angered by his friend’s sentiments and an altercation between the two men arose.

The dispute degenerated into a fight resulting in Ngulube pulling out an Okapi knife from his pockets and stabbing Moyo in the stomach. He collapsed and died upon admission to Mpilo Central Hospital.

“On the fateful day, Ngulube started drinking beer at around 10am and was later joined by the deceased and one Nkosinomusa Gumbo. They went to a house in Mpopoma and continued drinking during which an altercation ensued between the accused and deceased,” said Mr Muduma.

The court heard that Moyo mocked Ngulube’s girlfriend’s looks, which did not go down well with the accused.

Cop Nabbed For Stealing Handcuffs

By A Correspondent- A cop stationed at Jotsholo Police Station in Lupane, Matabeleland North, has been arrested for allegedly stealing a wheelbarrow, duty roster book, stock clearance book and handcuffs from the police station.

Martin Ruzvidzo (35) of New Stands in Jotsholo also stole a pillow from a colleague he shared a room with at Jotsholo Police Camp.

He was still stationed at Sipepa Police Station in Tsholotsho when he allegedly stole a duty roster book and stock clearance book from the station.

Ruzvidzo was transferred to Jotsholo last year and went on to steal a wheelbarrow and handcuffs from the station and a pillow from his roommate, also a cop at the police camp.

Ruzvidzo allegedly kept the stolen items in a room he was secretly renting outside the police camp.

The crimes were discovered after his alert landlord tipped police that the wheelbarrow was at his house. Upon searching the room, police recovered the other items hidden in a suitcase.

The items had been reported missing.

The offences were committed between January 2020 and last month.

Ruzvidzo was not asked to plead to three counts of theft and two of unlawful borrowing when he appeared before Lupane Resident magistrate Mr Ndumo Masuku who remanded him in custody to today for bail application.

Prosecuting, Mr Clive Gumbo said Ruzvidzo concealed the stolen items despite knowing they were being looked for.

“Sometime in January 2020 at Sipepa Police Station the accused who was still stationed there used unknown means and stole a duty roster book which the station started using in 2019. He was transferred to Jotsholo and went with the book.

“On 26 February 2022 his landlord in Jotsholo reported to police that a wheelbarrow that was missing was at his house. Police found that the wheelbarrow was the same that was stolen in August last year,” said the prosecutor.

Police recovered the wheelbarrow and requested to search the room, but Ruzvidzo claimed that he had left the keys in Kwekwe.

The court heard that police broke the door and when they conducted a search, they recovered the duty roster book, stock clearance book, three pairs of handcuffs and a pillow.

Ruzvidzo was allegedly using the stock clearance book and had made 41 transactions using it.

He was arrested and the items taken by police as exhibits.

Ruzvidzo is being represented by Mr Tawanda Mabika of Mugiya and Mavhami Law Chambers.

One On One With ZCTU President Florence Taruvinga

By A Correspondent- Florence Taruvinga (FT), broke the glass ceiling when she was elected Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president in October, beating Peter Mutasa after polling 73 votes to his 59, thereby becoming the first woman to lead the labour movement.

Taruvinga is a member of the Energy Sector Workers’ Union of Zimbabwe (ESWUZ). Her rise was controversial though, as she was accused of leading a ZCTU faction aligned to Zanu-PF, which was allegedly bankrolled by businessman Kuda Tagwirei.

The NewsHawks (NH) caught up with Taruvinga and asked her about the alleged Zanu-PF links, as well as her game plan in addressing a plethora of challenges affecting workers. She denies being a Zanu-PF pawn. Below is the interview:

NH: Congratulations on being voted the ZCTU president?

FT: In the workers’ struggle there are no congratulations. What we say is that the struggle continues. The ZCTU conference elevated me from being the first vice-president to become the president of ZCTU. I am grateful for that, as that will give me leverage in pursuing the workers’ man[1]date with the clarity that it deserves.

NH: You are the first female president. How did you manage to break new ground?

FT: The ZCTU is an equal opportunity organisation, where we focus more on merit and clarity in pursuing the collective working class agenda. My election and elevation as the first female president of the trade union organisation are ample evidence that the organisation has come of age and it practices what it preaches.

As an organisation we believe in gender equity and equality. Workers this time around decided to give the opportunity to a woman comrade because women are known as peace builders, fighters, unifiers, consistent and, above all, are determined to achieve no matter the obstacles.

NH: Can you share with us your brief back[1]ground?

FT: l am a young working woman aged 33, employed by Zesa. In 2010, I organised the young workers in the energy industry on the importance of joining trade unions and making them know of workers’ rights.

In 2012, I pioneered in registration of ESWUZ union and organised in all regions recruiting members. In 2013, I was trained by the ZCTU as a shop steward and between 2013 and 2019, I was interim national women’s chairperson for Energy Sector Workers’ Union Of Zimbabwe and a woman councillor to the ZCTU.

In October 2016, I was elected to be the first vice-president of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions. On 6 March 2018, I was fired from Zesa for demonstrating against non-compliance of collective bargaining agreements and bad corporate governance before being reinstated on 11 December 2019.

NH: There were several allegations levelled against your ascendency, ranging from state-sponsored vote buying linked to businessman Kuda Tagwirei. What is your response to this?

FT: It is unfortunate that some colleagues in the struggle decided to peddle those unfounded allegations on my person as a way to try to dent my candidature which they have failed to prove up until now. But l accepted it as part of the game of politics, and put it behind.

However, I never in my whole career as a trade unionist ever imagined a day would come when unionists would go to those lengths just to retain political power and control of the organisation. It is however gratifying that the workers and trade unions, who had known my history, supported me to stand in the elections and stood with me throughout the mud-slinging and unfounded allegations.

Since the elective conference, we have moved on towards implementing the workers’ mandate. We remain unmoved and unperturbed by the manufactured rumours and allegations.

NH: Your new leadership is said to have taken a pro-government approach. Is this true?

FT: Our approach has been based on consultation, research, dialogue, feedback and obviously action. Our action or intentions must be driven by our constituency, who are the workers. We are mandate-driven as an organisation. Workers will indicate and dictate what they want.

NH: How have the first months in office been?

FT: The first few months in office have been very challenging and exciting. As the new leader[1]ship, we have decided to go back to basics in an effort to reconnect with our affiliate trade unions and their membership.

We have embarked on countrywide labour forums, where we took the opportunity to meet with shop-floor workers, district and regional structures. The meetings we conducted around the country gave us enough firepower to fuel and direct the workers’ struggle towards achievement of de[1]cent work, better working conditions and the US dollar-based salaries.

We have also engaged with employers and government, just to touch base on the fast deteriorating social and economic conditions in the country.

To sum it all up, in the past few months, we, as the workers’ leadership, have noted that we need to roll up our sleeves and get to do real work because the issues that confront the working class are huge, but not insurmountable. With enough political will, Zimbabwe can be great again.

NH: As the new leader, what are your priorities in the coming five years?

FT: As the president of ZCTU you must note that l do not operate in isolation of our policies, strategic plan and other policy guidelines. It is, however, my wish and that of my general council to improve relations that exist between employers, government and workers. In our view, this can be achieved through honest and frank discussions, as far as identifying impediments to national development and growth for our country.

It is our wish to see the Tripartite Negotiating Forum discussing and recommending issues to cabinet that go beyond rhetoric. Currently, the TNF Act does not bind the cabinet to accept recommendations of the TNF, and that in itself requires serious redress, because besides the existence of the TNF Act, everything else is rendered useless.

It is the mandate of my leadership to ensure that workers start to earn in US dollars, as it is the only currency of value in the country at the present moment.

Business has rejected the local currency, and the government is following suit, it is therefore our considered position that workers should not continue to be paid in a non-existent currency. We are intending to intensify our efforts for dialogue to achieve that intention.

In the event that it fails, we will certainly move to campaigns that will ensure that we get that which the workers are demanding for. As guided by our ZCTU congress resolutions, we intend to push for the finalisation of labour law reform, as well as its realignment with the country’s constitution.

NH: The general populace feels that they have suffered enough due to poor salaries. What is your take on this outcry and what do you intend to do?

FT: Indeed, we agree with our members that the salaries have become a mere pittance to workers. Being a worker, l feel the pain.

With my salary, l am unable to make ends meet and l believe that is the situation with the majority of workers in this country. Our proposal is to go for dollarisation in an effort to restore the purchasing power of workers which has been lost from October 2018.

NH: Formal employment has also been drastically going down and, in the process, affecting labour activism in the country. How do you intend to address this gap?

FT: Our view as labour is that the government needs to create a conducive environment for both local and international investment. Unfortunately in a country fraught with policy inconsistencies most investors would shy away from risking and investing their capital.

There is a need to set our principles right. Most investors would be interested in investing in a country that respects labour laws and promotes social dialogue processes. If these are not respected and not in place, it would be difficult to attract any meaningful investment.

We are losing a lot of members going into the informal economy, it is our call to the government that it should recognise the informal economy and also move towards assisting and providing policy support for the growth of the informal economy.

In our case, the informal economy has become the economy. It is therefore imperative that the government and, in particular, local governments, be prepared to harness the low-hanging fruits by supporting and capacitating the informal economy rather than to be fighting never-ending battles with workers in the informal economy.

NH: The ZCTU played a pivotal role in the formation of the political opposition in Zimbabwe. But we have witnessed countless breakaways from the original MDC. So which side is labour backing?

FT: The ZCTU is an independent trade union organisation that is controlled and guided internally by its affiliates. The affiliates who make up ZCTU do not organise workers along partisan politics. Workers are free and are encouraged to belong to any political parties of their choice.

As a trade union we are very much interested in seeing the political manifestos of all the political parties. Our interests stem from the fact that we do not have permanent friends, but we have permanent interests.

We will encourage workers to support a political party that identifies with the struggle of the suffering workers, peasants and students.

NH: What is your take on efforts by the government to restore the value of the Zimdollar and promote its wider usage?

FT: The employers and government have slowly and certainly discarded use of the bond note. Workers are on the receiving end as they remain as the only ones who accept the RTGS/bond note as a measure of value and trade.

However, this has made workers much poorer. Our view is that the employer should now move towards restoring workers’ dignity and respect by paying them in the US dollar, which is the medium of exchange today.

NH: Any plans to embark on industrial action?

FT: Workers and the general populace are truly agitated with the prevailing socio-economic environment. As the leadership, we are trying our level best to control the situation, but both employers and government know exactly what needs to be done.

In any event, if the situation continues to be as it is, workers are already beaten and they are down. At this stage we can safely say that workers have nothing more to lose, as they have lost much more.

NH: What are your last words to the workers and citizens of Zimbabwe?

FT: As labour, we have been known for the popular adage “It is darkest before dawn”. As your president and leader, we believe that all is not lost; with concerted efforts we can restore Zimbabwe to its glory days.

We need a proper development paradigm, we need a shift to addressing the real macro-economic fundamentals for the country to move ahead. I will lead the ZCTU team in engaging with government and employers, if that fails l shall give you the clarion call for action in which we shall require the support of everyone.

CCC Condemns Kwekwe Violence

Own Correspondent

The Citizens’ Coalition for Change has condemned the escalation of political violence, particularly the egregious attacks against its members as the country approaches the 26 March by-election.

Zanu PF thugs attacked CCC members at President Nelson Chamisa’s rally in Kwekwe leading to the death of Mboneni Ncube.

Several party supporters were badly injured.CCC young supporter, Charity Nyome was among those injured. She was hospitalized after the barbaric attack.

Charity, whose brother Kudakwashe Nyome, fled the country after being persecuted by the Zanu PF regime said the incident has left her in shock.

“I am in a state of shock. Zanu PF hooligans terrorized my brother Kudakwashe Nyome, until he left the country as they were threatening to kill him. Kuda cannot return home because of fear of being eliminated by Zanu PF.

I witnessed the worst form of barbarism in Kwekwe. I was badly injured and I am currently receiving treatment after being hospitalized,” said Charity Nyome.

In a statement Thursday, CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said violence against their members must stop.

Below is the statement:
In the early hours of this morning, four men armed with machetes and a gun stormed the home of Hon. Tendai Biti who is our by-election candidate for Harare East constituency.
