Man Arrested For Chewing Up Ballot Paper

A 35-year-old man has been fined $15 000 or risks spending a month in jail for chewing ballot papers he had been handed to cast his vote during the just-ended by-elections on March 26.

Tendai Artwell Gonye was fined after admitting to chewing the ballot papers when he appeared before Harare magistrate Mrs Barbra Mateko.

Gonye (35) of Mabvuku, went to Simudzai Primary School to cast his vote in Ward 21 for the local authority by-election at around 4pm.

Upon arrival at the polling station, Gonye produced his particulars and was given a ballot paper to vote.

He then proceeded to the voting booth and marked the ballot paper.

Gonye then came out of the voting booth and walked away without placing the ballot paper in the ballot box.

He was stopped by police officers who advised him to place the ballot paper in the box.

Gonye refused and became violent.

He then stashed the ballot paper in his mouth, chewed it and spit the pieces on the ground, leading to his arrest.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Chinyoka (36) and Tafadzwa Mupanguri (37) appeared at Mbare Magistrates Court last week for also violating the Electoral Act.

The State had it that Chinyoka of Mufakose at around 3pm went to Crowborough Sewage Works polling station to cast her vote during the just ended by-elections on March 26.

She then allegedly produced a national identity card in the name of Zvanyadza Chinyoka, who happens to be her sister. It is said that Chinyoka was given two ballot papers one for Member of Parliament and the other for local authority.

She then went on to cast her vote using her sister’s ID and went away.

After 30 minutes of casting her vote, Zvanyadza went to the same polling station to cast her vote.

It was when she was told that she had already voted. Upon being questioned, Zvanyadza indicated that it could have been her sister who had used her ID.

Mupanguri, of Highfield, allegedly went to Mbizi Primary School, Ward 25 in Highfield East to cast his vote.

He then produced a national identity card in the name of Zvikomborero Mupanguri. A polling officer told him that the ID belonged to Zvikomborero Mapanguri, but he insisted that he was the owner of the identity card.

He was taken to the police where he was found with a birth certificate with his actual name, Tafadzwa Mupanguri.– Herald

Waste Of State Money As NatPharm Directors Go ScotFree

Company (NatPharm) are now free after the Supreme Court acquitted them of corruption charges, overturning a High Court decision made last year that they must stand trial.
The six were facing criminal abuse of office for charges for allegedly failing to retire managing director, Florah Nancy Sifeko, when her tenure of office lapsed.

They unsuccessfully sought to have the charges quashed through an application for an exception to the charges in July last year.

But last week, former board chairman Billy Rigava, his then deputy Rachael Chibaya, board members Johnson Shonhe, Notburga Chifamba, Charles Maponga and Gerald Gore, were a relieved lot after the superior court allowed their appeal.

A three-judge panel of Justices Lavender Makoni, Alfas Chitakunye and Hlekani Mwayera, unanimously found merit in the appeal and quashed the lower court’s judgment.

“The appeal be and is hereby allowed. The judgment of the court a quo is set aside and substituted with the following: (i) The application for review be and is hereby granted (ii) the applicant’s exception to the charges relating to the contravention of Section 174 (i) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform Act) Chapter 9: 23 be and is hereby upheld and the charges against the applicants be and are hereby quashed,” read the judgment.

Mr Rodgers Matsikidze, who instructed Advocate Lewis Uriri to argue the appeal for his client Chifamba, described the Supreme Court ruling as ground-breaking.

“This is quite a landmark ruling in that it dealt with the controversy around policy makers and decision implementers,” he said.

“In particular, whether a policy maker who is a board member can be charged with abuse of office on issues that require another person to implement.

“More importantly the issue or where you draw a line between abuse of office and mere omission.

“The matter dealt with issues of to what extent an exception can be sustained. Overall, a good and sound judgment.”

The six approached the High Court last year on review of regional magistrate Ms Estere Chivasa’s decision dismissing their request to have the charges dropped.

It was their argument that the exceptions taken were on the basis of that factually and legally no offence was disclosed in the charge. The reasoning was that, an extant judgment which they argue was binding existed and has pronounced that Natpharm was not a public entity.

Its officers, therefore, did not owe a public duty and could not be charged in terms of the charge preferred.

But the prosecution opposed the application arguing that the six could only raise an exception where the charge fell short in terms of the provision of the law under which they were being charged.

It was on that basis that High Court judge Justice Phildah Muzofa found no misdirection on the part of the trial court and threw out the application.

The judge ruled that if the six alleged that the charge was based on falsehoods and that the prosecution withheld facts known to it invariably means the court had to be favoured with what the applicants allege is the truth.

This, she said, could only be done through evidence and the court would have to interrogate the veracity of each party’s evidence before a substantive decision is made.

In their application at the High Court, the six’s contention was that the trial court failed to consider a binding decision granted in NatPharm’s favour that had declared the company to be privately-owned and thus did not have any public duty in relation to the conduct of its officials and employees.

They argued, the trial magistrate had erred in ordering the trial to proceed when it was apparent that the factual basis on which the charge sheet was based was false. -Herald

Zanu PF Activists Abduct Mboneni Ncube’s Sister

Suspected ZANU PF activists who allegedly murdered a Citizens for Coalition for Change (CCC) Kwekwe activist in February are reportedly threatening witnesses against testifying.

Mboneni Ncube was stabbed twice with a spear at a CCC rally held at Mbizo shopping centre and died on admission to Kwekwe Central Hospital.

The deceased’s sister, Judith Ncube, said she was kidnapped on Thursday evening by suspected ZANU PF activists who threatened to kill her if she continued demanding answers into Mboneni’s murder.

Speaking to The Standard, Judith said she now feared for her life following the abduction incident. She said:

It was around 4 pm when the incident happened. They grabbed and bundled me into their vehicle.

They took me to a ZANU PF base in Kwekwe where they threatened to make me disappear if I kept on pressing for answers to the killing of my brother.

His killers are known and all I want is closure and justice.

The incident was reported to the police and the case number is CRO/04/22.

Also speaking to The Standard, Judith’s lawyer Darlington Marange of the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum said:

She identified some of the culprits that were implicated in the murder, including some known ruling party bigwigs.

She has been saying that police are refusing to take the names of the perpetrators.

We are now considering visiting the police to iron this out because it falls under their duties to take the report as is and to investigate.

It appears there is some resistance but this is something that we have to iron out.

We are also considering getting a peace order against the people who have been harassing her.

She now lives in fear and we have to now take that route of a peace order to ensure her safety.

The issue of her safety is now of paramount importance outside other legal routes that we want to take.

Other people willing to testify against Ncube’s killers were being harassed constantly, Mbizo MP-elect Settlement Chikwinya claimed.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) arrested 16 ZANU PF youths for Ncube’s murder but later released 11 of them.

The late Ncube had recently remarried following the death of his first wife, with whom he had an eight-year-old daughter.- The Standard

New DSTV Prices

DStv’s updated pricing for 2022 took effect yesterday, 1 April, with prices on some services increasing by 4.89%.

The average increase across DStv’s pay-TV packages is 2.7%, which MultiChoice highlighted was significantly less than projected inflation for 2022.

MultiChoice said it had considered the challenges facing South African consumers and absorbed as much of the cost increase as possible. MultiChoice South Africa’s CEO, Nyiko Shiburi, said:

We realise that customers remain under pressure two years into the Covid-19 pandemic.

These adjustments will help us to ensure that South Africans continue to enjoy the best value, and unrivalled access to entertainment, anywhere, anytime, and at the most affordable price.

DStv’s Premium and Compact Plus subscribers will pay R10 per month more from Friday — less than a 2% increase in both cases.

DStv Compact subscribers will have to fork out an additional R20 per month, an increase of 4.89%.

DStv also increased the access fee from R105 to R110 but left its Box Office, Showmax, EasyView, and Add Movies pricing unchanged.

The changes apply to DStv’s decoder and streaming-only products.

MultiChoice’s price hikes come after it restricted the number of simultaneous streams for DStv.

Mnangagwa Says Kasukuwere Surrounded By God’s Powerful Anointing

By Dorrothy Moyo | A video has emerged of the ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa saying that his enemy Saviour Kasukuwere has got God’s mighty anointing protecting him.

The two do not see eye to eye since the day Mnangagwa took over power in a coup against the late President Robert Mugabe.

Kasukuwere, as a result, is now a diasporan, continuing his career in South Africa.

In the footage, embedded below, Mnangagwa is heard at a rally announcing that Kasukuwere has “ruzhowa” on and around his head. He then swings his fingers in the air to illustrate the protection he alleges the creator has put on Tyson, as the latter is fondly titled.

Some ZANU PF members allege that this is a sign that Kasukuwere is the only person who is capable of replacing Mnangagwa. WHAT DO YOU THINK? VIDEO BELOW…

Implications Of Kamambo Failure To Travel To Qatar

Zimbabwe was the only country that had no representatives at the FIFA Congress held in Doha, Qatar on Thursday.

210 of the 211 members associations attended the the event, with Zifa missing.

The development came after a Harare court barred Felton Kamambo from travelling to the meeting.

Kamambo, who was suspended as the Zifa president by the SRC, is facing several charges and is out of remand on bail.

According to lawyer Admire Rubaya, the suspended FA boss wanted to travel to Qatar and help in negotiating for the lifting of the sanctions. However, the magistrate refused to ease the conditions of the bail.

The sanctions, which came after the SRC dissolved the Zifa board, were ratified at Thursday’s congress in the absence of a representative from the Southern African country.

199 out of 201 consented to the imposition of these sanctions. The ban will only be lifted once the conditions set by FIFA have been met, among them the reinstatement of the Kamambo administration.

The restrictions will bar the country from participating in any international events including matches. Local football clubs will also be barred from representing the country in continental competitions such as the CAF champions league and CAF confederations cup.

Kenya and Pakistan, who also received similar sanctions, were represented at the congress.

Russia, who have been frozen out of international football due to their involvement in the Ukrainian war, had a delegation at the event.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Overwhelming Support For President Chamisa In Rural Gutu: Pictures

Tinashe Sambiri| President Nelson Chamisa’s yellow revolution is simply unstoppable.

On Saturday CCC vice president Hon Lynette Karenyi- Kore addressed thousands of Citizens’ Coalition For Change supporters at Mushwai Business Centre, Gutu East Constituency.

According to CCC aspiring MP for Gutu East, Gift Gonese, the yellow movement is ready to romp to victory.

“We are highly motivated by President Chamisa’s six million votes initiative. We are working tirelessly to drum up support for the People’s President Advocate Chamisa.

Nobody can stop the citizens’ revolution.

We are glad to have the VP and several national leaders with us in the constituency,” said Gonese.

Gonese has unrolled an array of projects in the constituency.

In a statement CCC Masvingo said:
“Gutu East has bn invaded today. Mushwayi BC was painted yellow by the National Democratic Revolutionary trajectory @CCCZimbabwe . VP @KarenyiKore was the guest of honor accompanied by NVC Hon Zvidzai. @CCCMasvingo is now going rural. Thank you Masvingo Champions @nelsonchamisa.”

2023 Polls: Mnangagwa Can’t Avoid Defeat

Tinashe Sambiri|Veteran political commentator Dr Pedzisai Ruhanya says Mr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s Zanu PF party will be heavily defeated in Harare in the 2023 polls.

Addressing a Zanu PF rally in Shamva, Mr Mnangagwa vowed to “win back” Harare.

“Harare used to be a sunshine city during colonial times, but now it is an eyesore due to dirtiness. This is being caused by opposition councillors who are running it down. Let me assure you that in this coming election, we are going to get Harare municipality,” Mr Mnangagwa said.

Dr Ruhanya commented:
“He says he wants to wrestle Harare from CCC when he has been failing to wrestle his home town Kwekwe Central, parts of Midlands including Gweru. May be its not about people’s vote. If its about real votes of the people ED cant take even many rural areas.

ZANU PF cannot win an election in which the vote counts, where the people turn out in the huge numbers to vote and protect their vote. For this to happen the challenge is beyond parties like CCC alone but the ordinary citizens must take it upon themselves to register, VOTE.

Want to see on the ground an organised and robust CCC RURAL STRATEGY on mobilisation, voter registration of young people and how people organise themselves to protect each other from violence, protecting the voter. Going into rural areas during campings is NOT A STRATEGY.

ZimThrive Launch in Harare | FULL TEXT

ZimThrive, a diaspora initiative is planning an official launch on Friday morning of April the 22nd from 8am to 1pm at the Rainbow Towers in Harare. On the 27th of April, a Diaspora Investment Conference will be held alongside the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Trade to which ZimThrive has been invited to attend and partner.

Zimthrive…Zimbabweans celebrate

Co-founders Mildred Munjanganja, who is based in the US, and Mike Tashaya, who is based in the UK, established the platform to bring Zimbabweans who live in various countries around the world together, with the aim of reinforcing unity, building new and old friendships, fostering diasporan business interest and creating a stronger and self-sufficient nation.
‘Our original intent was to launch this global socioeconomic initiative in Zimbabwe in April of 2020’ said Mike Tashaya, Co-founder of Zimthrive ‘the advent of the Covid pandemic disrupted these plans but we have been able to pivot focusing on continuous dialogue and opportunities for the Zimbabwean community abroad to interact with their country in a productive and mutually beneficial way, so that we can reengage with our roots, enjoy and rebuild our beautiful country.”

The Homecoming Initiative which will now host a virtual event in April 2023 and a local event in Zimbabwe in 2024 has received positive support coming from the Diaspora Desk within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and other stakeholders is meant to entice thousands of Zimbabweans across the globe to visit home in the month of April where ZimThrive will bring together both local and diasporan Zimbabweans to host events in tourism, entertainment, fashion, food, business and various other sectors to take place across the country. Mildred Munjanganja, Founder of ZimThrive said “Like most people in the diaspora, our tourist destinations of choice were everywhere else in the world, South Africa, Paris, Asia but rarely Zimbabwe, whose sunsets evoke feelings nostalgia, whose sense of wonder is unparalleled – I believe our economy could stand to benefit from our intentional attention,” Mildred said.

She added that she wanted to divert foreign currency expenditure to the Zimbabwean economy. “We want to go home to be entertained by our artists, eat our local food and buy art & crafts made by our own people – we want to bring everyone home from the diaspora at the same time to strengthen our identity and to collaborate with Zimbabwean locals to bring back the unity and prosperity of our nation.”

The international ZimThrive resource team has continued to focus on other critical initiatives and during the pandemic git involved in covid support initiatives which included fundraising for some of Zimbabwe’s main hospitals and subsidizing nurse’s salaries to cope with the overwhelming cases that were rising at the time.
Despite the disruptions by Covid, the apolitical initiative, has been able to consolidate its global structures across Europe, Asia, the USA, Australia and Africa focusing heavily on building participation in every country where Zimbabweans reside. Solid global media platforms were also established which ensure the fast and accurate dissemination of information.

“Because of this global reach” said Farai Madziwanyika, Co-Ordinator for Africa, “ ZimThrive has become amongst other things, a platform for the marketing of various goods and services to the diaspora with several blue-chip companies signing on for global marketing services with the group.”

On Friday April 22nd ZimThrive will be officially launching to the public as it hoped to do in April 2020. Mike and Mildred and several other members of the initiative will be in the country for the invite only launch event where various stakeholders will be presented with ZimThrive’s mission and purpose. On the 27th of April, a Diaspora Investment Conference will be held alongside the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Trade to which ZimThrive has been invited to attend and partner for the second year in a row and participate.

The launch event to be held at the Rainbow Towers is by invite only and the ZITF event is open to business people locally and from the diaspora. Both events will be held on a hybrid in person and streamed globally. To register for either or both events, interested parties are requested to register on the event registration portal for each event on www.zimthrive.com/events. Alternatively, they can email Mr. Farai Madziwanyika, the Co-Ordinator for Africa on [email protected] .

Hospital Employees Connive With Private Funeral Parlour

By A Correspondent- Some employees at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital in Mutare are reportedly touting the services of a private funeral parlour, Sojourner Funeral Parlour, to bereaved families.

The staff members involved in the scam are reportedly being paid an average of US$50 whenever they hand over corpses to the private funeral parlour of people who would have died while admitted to the hospital.

Bereaved families without funeral policies are allegedly told that the hospital’s mortuary is not working and then forced to engage Sojourner’ss services.

In some cases, the bodies of people who die while in admission are handed over to the funeral parlour without the consent of the deceased person’s relatives.

The deceased’s relatives would be told to negotiate the price for burial services with Sojourner.

Tongai Nongerai, an employee of the Ministry of Health and Child Care at the mortuary wing, is reportedly attached to Sojourner Funeral Parlour.

He divulged to The Manica Post that taking the body to their rented Doves mortuary would cost US$50.

Nongerai also said the cheapest charge for all the funeral services was US$300.

But Doves Funeral Services spokesperson, Innocent Tshuma, told the publication that his company had nothing to do with Sojourner Funeral Parlour. He said:

We do not rent out our mortuaries to anyone. We are also aware of those funeral parlours that have their vehicles parked just outside hospitals as they wait for bodies.

Sojourner Funeral Parlour owner, Tafadzwa Mukwati, admitted that Nongerai works for the company on a part-time basis. Said Mukwati:

While Mr Nongerai is employed by Government through the Ministry of Health and Child Care, he also serves us on a part-time basis and there is nothing wrong with that.

On 19 February, a bereaved family from Gwese Village, Mutare, discovered that the body of their deceased relative was not in the Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital mortuary when they came to collect it. Said a relative who spoke on condition of anonymity:

We left the hospital to get some medication that was prescribed for our niece who was admitted to the hospital. Upon our return, we were informed that she had passed on.

What disturbed us the most is that the body of the deceased was not in the hospital ward or the mortuary.

Instead, it had already been placed in the Sojourner Funeral Parlour vehicle.

We were not happy about it and we had a heated argument with the authorities over the issue.

Mukwati described the incident as a minor misunderstanding and insisted that his company’s operations are lawful.

Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr Dorcas Masanga-Mutede did not respond to questions sent to her, The Manica Post reported.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that a committee has been established to investigate the issue after Manicaland Provincial Medical Director, Dr Simon Nyadundu intervened.-ManicaPost

Water Shortage Haunts Chipinge District Hospital

By A Correspondent- Chipinge District Hospital is experiencing a severe water shortage, raising fears of an imminent outbreak of diarrheal diseases at the health institution.

The water crisis at Chipinge District’s referral hospital has been caused by the constant breakdowns of the water reticulation system, worsened by a breakdown of one of the main water pumps.

The hospital and staff residents are supplied by one borehole and this has forced admitted patients’ relatives to bring them water for use.

A hospital staff member who declined to be named in the report told The Manica Post that the hospital’s system needs a complete overhaul to end the perennial water challenges. Said the worker:

The hospital’s water system needs a complete overhaul. We are struggling to get adequate water supplies at the hospital, mainly because of the ageing pipes which need a complete overhaul.

When we engaged the council, they told us that their role is to supply water to the main pipe and the water reticulation at the hospital is done by the Department of Public Works.

Assistant District Development Coordinator, Teddius Beto confirmed the water situation at the hospital and pleaded with stakeholders to help. Said Beto:

The hospital has been facing water challenges for a while and the situation is bad. We have been engaging all responsible departments to come on board and the situation has improved, although water is still in short supply.

We are appealing to various stakeholders to come on board and assist through water trucking, as well as the replacement of the hospital’s water pumps.

President Chamisa Steps Up Rural Campaign

By A Correspondent- Bouyed by its impressive showing in last week’s by-election, opposition leader Nelson Chamisa’s Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) is stepping up its campaigns in rural areas, long perceived to be Zanu-PF strongholds, ahead of the 2023 elections.

Chamisa’s CCC won 19 of the available 28 parliamentary seats while Zanu-PF got the remainder, including two that they grabbed from the opposition — Epworth and Mutasa South.

Douglas Mwonzora’s MDC T failed to get any seat.

The by-elections were viewed as the barometer to gauge popularity ahead of the 2023 general elections where Chamisa will likely square off with President Emmerson Mnangagwa who won the 2018 presidential election by a narrow margin.

Both Zanu-PF and CCC are celebrating their performance in the by-elections, with the ruling party saying the result narrowed the opposition’s popularity in its strongholds such as Binga North constituency.

CCC’s Prince Dubeko-Sibanda won Binga North with 10 130 votes, defeating Kudakwashe Mavula Munsaka of Zanu-PF who came second with 7971 votes.

In 2018, Dube-Sibanda got 18 428 votes against Zanu-PF’s 7 751.

In a post Cabinet briefing last week, the government stopped short of saying Binga and other rural areas were now a priority for Zanu-PF.

But CCC interim secretary-general Charton Hwende said the opposition party was also turning its eye on the rural vote with a basket of interventions including drilling boreholes in each of the country’s rural wards.

“The president (Chamisa) embarked on a tour of all the rural areas where he met Zimbabweans before we formed CCC. Our rural penetration program is a continuation of what the president started,” Hwende said.

“Rural areas are key for the CCC, this is where most of the electoral violations take place. That’s where headmen and chiefs force people to vote for Zanu-PF. So it is our duty as a party to ensure we have a strong presence in the rural areas.”

n 2021, Chamisa visited rural areas under the meet the people tours but his entourage and supporters were attacked on several occasions by suspected Zanu-PF supporters.

The violence claimed the life of MDC Alliance activist Nyasha Zhambe of Gutu, Masvingo.

According to a Zanu-PF central committee report by the security department adopted at the party’s conference held in Bindura last year, the ruling party was worried by Chamisa’s inroads in rural areas.

“This is meant to penetrate the ruling party’s rural areas, they will manage to mobilise substantial support from the rural areas, and this will brighten their chances of winning the presidential vote,” the central committee report read in part.

Zanu-PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa said he was in a meeting when contacted for comment. Party secretary for administration Obert Mpofu said Mutsvangwa was the best person to comment.

But Hwende said the opposition party would be “leaving no village unturned.”

“We are also urging our supporters that every weekend they visit their rural areas and be with the people there to understand how they live, to campaign and sell the CCC message,” he said.

“Operation Handei Kumusha is ongoing and all our party cadres are deployed in villages throughout the country, leaving no village unturned. We are under 12 months before the next election. It is now full throttle campaigning throughout the country and fundraising is also ongoing driven by the citizens themselves.”

Analyst Effie Ncube said the rural electorate was key when Zimbabwe goes for elections in 2023.

“Whoever wins it with an overwhelming majority is going to most likely be the next president of the country and the party that is going to win the rural constituency is going to be the majority party in parliament,” Ncube said yesterday.

“You cannot win the parliamentary majority without winning the rural constituencies. The distribution of the constituencies is such that you definitely need to win the majority if not all the rural constituencies and also at a presidential level you need the numbers from the rural areas, no doubt about it. That will be the key decider of the 2023 election.”

Mliswa Quashes Susan Mutami Truce Claims

By Jane Mlambo| Norton legislator Temba Mliswa has dismissed baby mama Susan Mutami’s claims that they have settled their dispute and are now ready for dual parenting of their son.

Mutami had taken to Twitter to announce that one Setfree Mafukidze had helped in solving her dispute with Mliswa.

“In the spirit of forgiveness, myself and Temba Mliswa have decided to forgive each other and co-parent in peace and let the young man experience love from both parents. I have Bamnini @cdesetfree to thank for counseling us,” said Mutami.

But Mliswa has refuted Mutami’s claims saying he has not spoken to her and any process to get the child into his family would start with DNA tests.

“I want to make this clear. Despite the new position being shown by @susan_mutami I would like to make it clear that I have not had any communication with her. She has indeed tried to use the legal route, @cdesetfree and others but my position has always been clear.

“I come from a family centred on traditional values and will not deal with the issues relating to my kids on social media. Susan said a lot about my mother who has never been on social media. She was taken aback how her benevolence in giving a chicken had been abused.

“Secondly Susan also attacked my sister, Mary who potentially could have been vatete vake. I didn’t respond to all these issues. She accused me of seeking to kill the President’s son& being involved in the Bulawayo bombing. So she has a lot of issues that she raised,” said Mliswa.

Duo Hauled To Court Over Stealing Vehicle From OPC

By A Correspondent- Two men appeared in court on Thursday on allegations of stealing a vehicle from the Office of the President and Cabinet.

The suspects, Lameck Phiri and Last Chinamasa appeared before Harare magistrate, Shane Kubonera who remanded them in custody.

The complainant in the matter is Obey Mbofana, who is employed by the OPC

Allegations are that on 17 March 2022, Mbofana parked a silver Toyota Quantum along Nelson Mandela Avenue in the Harare CBD.

Mbofana left the engine running, with car keys on the ignition, while he bargained on the price of a pair of shoes, which were being sold on the pavement.

The duo took advantage, jumped into the vehicle and took off at high speed.

Mbofana attempted to give chase but the suspects turned into Leopold Takawira Street and disappeared.

Detectives from the Vehicle Theft Squad eventually caught up with the suspects following investigations.

On 29 March detectives questioned Crynonce Kasenga who was in possession of one of Mbofana’s stolen cellphones.

He told the detectives he bought the cellphone from Phiri who in turn implicated Chinamasa.

The police also recovered the stolen vehicle key attached to a Honda Fit key, and a battery and a starter that had been removed from the stolen Toyota Quantum.

The Toyota Quantum was found in Zinanga Village, Chief Seke in Ziko where Chinamasa’s father Simon stays.

Detectives identified the stolen vehicle by its Chassis number. However, the engine, gearbox, battery, starter and number plates had been removed.

The number plates had been stashed in a maize field in Sunningdale 2. The gearbox was also recovered.-HMetro

Fresh Fissures In ED’s Backyard

By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s backyard, the Midlands province, has been hard hit by fresh turmoil after losing three crucial seats in last week’s by-elections with rival factions blaming and threatening each other for contributing to the loss.

Zanu-PF is deeply divided in the province, with the party failing to heal from the bloody and divisive provincial elections that saw Mnangagwa imposing his top ally, Larry Mavima, for the post of chairperson while firing State Security minister Owen “Mudha” Ncube who was accused of resorting to violence and alienating the party from voters.

But the Ncube camp, that is said to have assumed a passive approach during the by-election campaign while sulking, accuses Mavima of lacking the strategy to win Mbizo and Kwekwe Central constituencies.

Zanu-PF also lost Mkoba constituency to CCC organising secretary Amos Chibaya.

Sources close to Ncube told The NewsHawks in separate interviews that the perennial campaigners for the party, particularly the violent Al-Shabaab youths linked to Ncube, took a back seat in the electoral process.

It also emerged that the imposition of John Mapurazi to represent Kwekwe Central largely contributed to the loss to CCC’s Judith Tobaiwa, with supporters linked to Energy Ncube and Kandros Mugabe vowing their candidates would have grabbed the seat given the groundwork they had done.

Ncube, nephew to former minister “Mudha” Ncube, and Mugabe were disqualified following a series of violent clashes ahead of the party primary elections.

“The supporters of the two candidates were not happy with the disqualification of their preferred candidates after so much work and most of them took a back seat in the campaign process,” an insider said.

Vongai Mupereri represented the party in the race for the Mbizo seat, with party insiders saying he was imposed ahead of favourite Moses Murada and this contributed to Bhora Musango.

“People within the party structures were not happy with the candidature of Mupereri and Mapurazi. In Mbizo, people wanted Murada but the leadership instead imposed Mupereri,” the source said.

“In Kwekwe Central, the party would have fared better if they had allowed Mugabe or Ncube to stand. They had done their groundwork and all was set.

“Mapurazi is very unpopular and it was going to be a miracle if he were to win,” a Zanu-PF insider said.

“Things are not well, people are not happy. There are people who think they know everything and have a strategy to win lying to Number 1 (Mnangagwa) of their potential. We ended up watching them do the things and we knew it would end in defeat,” a senior Zanu-PF official told The NewsHawks this week.

“We were not united on the ground. People who were running the campaign did not have a strategy, they do not have people skills and we ended up on the losing side.”

Zanu-PF relied on mobilising youths around mining claims and the strategy, sources said, was working well and, had Ncube or Mugabe been allowed to stand, given their support base, one of them could have won.

“Remember Mugabe and Ncube’s strategy, a populist approach and mass mobilisation, was the same strategy that saw (the late former Kwekwe Central MP Masango) Matambanadzo winning. Matambanadzo was Zanu-PF and later joined National Patriotic Front (NPF) but continued to win. We needed that,” the insider said.

However, a rival camp blamed the violence unleashed by Zanu-PF’s Al-Shabaab thugs for alienating the party with supporters.

The terror group is known for terrorising people in and around Kwekwe and said to be linked to Ncube, better known as Mudha in Zanu-PF circles.

Ncube was fired from his powerful government post after he led a violent campaign for the post of provincial chairperson against Mnangagwa’s advice.

At least 16 Zanu-PF youths were last month arrested at Jessie Gardens, a lodge owned by Ncube, and charged with the murder of CCC activist Mboneni Ncube at a rally addressed by opposition leader Nelson Chamisa in Mbizo.

His death came hardly a day after Vic-President Constantino Chiwenga threatened during a campaign rally in Mbizo that the opposition CCC would be crushed like lice.

“People in Kwekwe are fed up with the violent conduct of the Zanu-PF militia, they need a new kind of politics which is what the new administration is for. We have a lot of work to do to convince the electorate of the new kind of politics divorced from use of force. Clearly, the bad image cost us dearly,” a senior Zanu-PF official said.

“For a long time people in Kwekwe and Mbizo have been subjected to violence from Zanu-PF. As long as President Mnangagwa is not reigning in his supporters and allowing vigilantism, terrorism and violence to continue, Zanu-PF will never win in Kwekwe. People in Kwekwe will continually reject the governing party.”

Tobaiwa said she was also a victim of Zanu-PF violence but soldiered on.

“My campaign car was defaced, my poll agents have been victimised and have violence meted on them. I would, however, want to thank my supporters for coming out in large numbers and vote for us despite the challenges,” she said.

Tobaiwa became the first female candidate to win a parliamentary seat in Kwekwe since Independence and has promised to push for the equitable distribution of mining resources.

Chikwinya, who retained his Mbizo seat, said: “This win is a tribute to Mboneni. We dedicate this win to him. He did not die in vain and we are going to continue with the values and ideals that he died for.

“We are going back to Parliament to reclaim our parliamentary space and giving alternative policies to government. We understand that government is in the hands of Zanu-PF. we have Zanu-PF and Zanu-PF in Parliament, there is no Zanu-PF and other opposition in Parliament. Zanu-PF captured Mwonzora.

“Through our re-election under CCC, people are voting back their voices. Those of us who are going back to Parliament, we are going to dominate Parliament, with respect to providing alternative policies to government as a precursor to the 2023 general election,” he said.

Zanu-PF Midlands provincial chairperson Mavima was not answering calls to his mobile phone this week but was recently quoted during a campaign rally warning members against protest votes.

“We will expel you from the party if we find out that you are going to vote for an opposition candidate. Hatidi bhora musango. Ukaita bhora musango tokudzinga (we do not want protest votes, if you do that we will fire you),” he said.

NRZ Foreman Dies At Work

By A Correspondent- A National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) employee died after a load of steel bars fell on him at the company’s mechanical engineering workshop.

The now-deceased, Nelson Chiname, was the company’s acting blacksmith foreman.

It was reported that Chiname didn’t even touch the trusses, where the steel bars were staked. They just collapsed, probably due to wear from rust. Another source was quoted as saying:

Chiname’s death was an accident, but inspectors should have picked out this safety glitch.

Last time, about three years back, an electrical attachee also lost his life after a pole collapsed. Our old metal structures are risky.

If one is to ask about periodic inspections, the response is no good.

NRZ acting spokesperson Martin Banda confirmed the accident. He promised to release more details later.

Elephant Meat Galore As CAG Is Involved In Accident

By A Correspondent- It is rare for those who witness road accidents to smile, but hundreds of villagers near Victoria Falls yesterday had a bus accident to thank after they walked away with chunks of meat after three elephants were killed in the accident.

However, all 18 passengers and the bus crew were not injured after the CAG Travellers bus they were travelling in rammed into a herd of elephants about 35km outside Victoria Falls, killing three jumbos on the spot.

The accident occurred just after 5am near Mbizha turn off along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls road.

Witnesses commended the bus driver, Mr Daniel Mapfumo, for managing to control the bus and avoiding hitting trees in the process, as the bus stopped on the side of the road about 50 metres from where the carcasses were.

Mliswa Denies Reuniting With Susan Mutami

By- Norton MP, Temba Mliswa , has denied claims by his Australian-based ex-lover Susan Mutami that the two have agreed to raise “their” child together.

Mutami last week claimed that she had reached a truce with Mliswa and the two had decided to co-parent their minor son.

Mutami and Mliswa have been involved in ugly verbal spats on social media over the upkeep of the child.

Posting on Twitter this Sunday, Mliswa insisted that Mutami should use traditional procedures channels to resolve their differences.

Mliswa also insisted that a paternity test should be carried out to determine if he is indeed the biological father of the child Mutami claims he sired. Said Mliswa:

I want to make this clear. Despite the new position being shown by @susan_mutami I would like to make it clear that I have not had any communication with her.

She has indeed tried to use the legal route, @cdesetfree & others but my position has always been clear.

I come from a family centred on traditional values and will not deal with the issues relating to my kids on social media.

Susan said a lot about my mother who has never been on social media. She was taken aback by how her benevolence in giving a chicken had been abused.

Secondly, Susan also attacked my sister, Mary who potentially could have been vatete vake (her sister-in-law). I didn’t respond to all these issues.

She accused me of seeking to kill the President’s son& being involved in the Bulawayo bombing. So she has a lot of issues that she raised.

Now the proper route for her for us to discuss the baby issues would be through my young sister Mary. Now how would she do that after all her negative aspersions against her?

As for the kid I have never denied paternity but stated that I would need a DNA test first!

Proper traditional channels and processes should be followed for the child to be admitted into the family. Subject to a DNA test.

But it has become clear that she was a project for Mudha all the way!

Zanu PF Thugs Abducts Murdered MDC Activist’s Sister

By- Suspected Zanu PF activists who allegedly murdered a Citizens for Coalition for Change (CCC) Kwekwe activist in February are reportedly threatening witnesses against testifying.

The late Ncube had recently remarried following the death of his first wife, with whom he had an eight-year-old daughter.

Harare Motorist Robbed At At Gun Point

By- A 47-old motorist was robbed of his vehicle by people he offered a lift at Whitehouse on his way to Norton on April 1.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), which is seized with the matter, said the three unknown assailants also stole valuables including a laptop. Said police in a statement:
On 01/04/22, ZRP Norton recorded a robbery case where a 47 year old man was robbed of a Toyota Corolla vehicle, HP core i7 laptop, a wallet with personal documents and US$23 cash, after he offered a lift to three unknown men who purported to be going to Norton, at Whitehouse bus stop, Harare. Along the way and at Cassabanana area the suspects attacked the complainant with an electric shocker and stole his valuables.
Cases of motorists who are robbed of their vehicles by people who they would havce offered lift have been on the rise in the recent past.

Villagers Stampede For CAG Killed Elephant Meat

By- Victoria Falls villagers on Saturday had a CAG Travellers bus accident to thank as they took several tonnes of free meat from the carcasses of three elephants that were killed in the accident.

A CAG Travellers bus travelling to Victoria Falls rammed into a herd of elephants, killing three of the animals on the spot.

The accident occurred about 35km outside Victoria Falls, just after 5 AM on Saturday near Mbizha turn off along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls road.

The bus suffered extensive damage but all 18 passengers and the bus crew were not injured.

Passengers were switched to another bus and proceeded with their journey.

Villagers from nearby Masikili and Mbizha villages, as well as some from as far as Lupinyu (about 20km away), some from Victoria Falls City, Chikandakubi and Chenamisa gathered at the accident scene to get a share of the meat.

According to The Sunday News, some of the villagers came on bicycles, cars and scotch carts while some boarded public transport from Victoria Falls.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority rangers and police officers were on the scene monitoring the situation.

The bus driver, Daniel Mapfumo, said he could not avoid hitting the jumbos because they appeared “suddenly” in the middle of the road. He said:

I suddenly saw the elephants and applied breaks while swerving to the left.

There were three groups so as I avoided the first, I saw another herd ahead.

The three were in the middle of the road and suddenly they turned at once, giving their back to the bus and they were hit at once.

Meanwhile, ZANU PF Hwange District Coordinating Committee chair Matthew Muleya urged drivers to be careful when driving along the Victoria Falls-Bulawayo road. He said:

Animals cross from the national park to communities so drivers should be cautious so that we save lives.

These buses travel at night and we urge them not to speed on this road.

CAG Bus Collides With Elephants, Kills The Jumbos

By- A CAG bus travelling to Victoria Falls hit three elephants, killing them on the spot. However, all 18 passengers and the bus crew were not injured.
VicFalls Live reports that the incident occurred on Saturday morning in the Matetsi area between Hwange and Victoria Falls on the 35-kilometre peg.
Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the accident. Said Farawo:
Fortunately, no human casualty was reported, but those three elephants died.
Farawo added that the cause of the accident that happened in a wildlife marked zone was not yet known.
The driver of the bus, Daniel Mapfumo, managed to control the bus and narrowly avoided hitting trees in the process, before bringing the bus to a halt 50 metres from the carcasses. Said Mapfumo:
I suddenly saw the elephants and applied breaks while swerving to the left. There were three groups so as I avoided the first, I saw another herd ahead.
The three were in the middle of the road and suddenly they turned at once, giving their back to the bus and they were hit at once.
A witness Arnold Sibanda who was driving behind the bus when the accident occurred, commended Mapfumo’s driving skills. He said:
It was early in the morning because the bus left Victoria Falls at 5 AM.
This is a crossing area for elephants and he encountered a large group that was crossing in the direction of the community.
The driver tried to avoid the first herd by swerving to the left.
He narrowly missed a tree and he redirected the bus back to the road, but there was another herd that was in the middle of the road as it was crossing.
He tried to avoid hitting the second herd, but there was no chance.
The bus hit the three elephants, but the driver worked hard to save lives and control the bus until it stopped.
I was driving at 90km per hour behind the bus which means it was travelling at almost the same speed.

Passengers Rob Motorist At Gun Point

Chamisa Speaks Of Winning 2023 Elections

By- T Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has said economic hardships and corruption will force Zimbabweans to eject the ruling ZANU PF in 2023.

Zimbabwe is scheduled to hold harmonised elections in 2023 and Mahere believes the economic difficulties will work against the governing party which is blamed for collapsing the economy through maladministration.

The southern African country’s inflation has been soaring in the past two years owing much to the local currency’s depreciation since its reintroduction in June 2019.
In a Twitter post in response to a post by an American economist, Professor Steve Hanke, Mahere said:
People within & outside Zim are taking notice of the fact that there is a changed atmosphere in the country. With 152% inflation, 49% extreme poverty & US$2bn being looted each year by Zanu PF, the 2023 ejection will see the citizens voting in their millions for change.
Professor Hanke had said “In Zimbabwe, a new opposition party (CCC) has made significant gains in byelections. With inflation roaring at 152%/yr by my measure, the CCC has a shot at challenging what is little more than a corrupt criminal organization (ZANU-PF) in next year’s elections.”
CCC rebranded this year from MDC Alliance after Senator Douglas Mwonzora who leads MDC-T claimed ownership of the name “MDC” and all its variances.

In the 26 March by-elections, CCC emerged as the winner with 19 National Assembly seats out of 28 that were up for grabs while it ammassed 77 Local Government seats out of 121 that were vacant. The rest were won by the ruling party.
Meanwhile, political experts warn the opposition party against complacency citing small margins it won with in areas previously considered the opposition’s strongholds and huge margins it lost with in ZANU PF strongholds.
They urge the Nelson Chamisa-led party to work on the rural vote that has so far remained in the hands of the governing party.

Our people cang continue to be treated as second class citizens in other countries- Let’s build our economy, our country and our Great continent. This is our home!

For the many, not for the few.

Marry Mubaiwa’s Health Deteriorates

The family of Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga’s estranged wife Marry Mubaiwa say they are in agony as the health of the former top model deteriorates at a time she is being denied her passport to seek medical attention outside the country.

Mubaiwa is admitted to a private hospital in Harare where her right hand is awaiting amputation, according to her lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa.

Mtetwa this week told magistrate Lazini Ncube that her client was admitted on Tuesday last week and diagnosed with a severe syndrome which is chronic.

According to a medical report by specialist trauma and orthopaedic surgeon John Nyahunzvi, Mubaiwa was on five-week post-revision surgery for a right humerus shaft refracture and her condition was critical.

The surgeon said her condition has necessitated hospitalisation and stabilisation with a plan for emergent right high above elbow amputation as soon a she is deemed medically stable.

But despite the need for emergency medical attention and surgery, the family said there is little they could do for her to travel out of the country since the courts were refusing to release her passport.

Businessman Kenny Mubaiwa, who is father to Marry, told The NewsHawks this week that under the circumstances, they have no other plan to ensure their ailing daughter is assisted and described the situation as painful.

“We would have wished to have her flown for treatment outside the country, but there is no plan as it stands because she doesn’t have a passport. If we had her passport, we would have tried something and see whether it works or not,” Mubaiwa said.

“She cannot do anything including going outside the country just like all the others who fall ill and fly out for medical attention, she is being denied that opportunity.

“She broke her arm on January 29 this year but they have tried an operation, nothing worked, they had to put something, again not working and it’s swollen and she is in pain.

“The operation was not successful and we would then need a second opinion and we are troubled on what to do next. She is in serious pain so I don’t know how we can be helped,” Mubaiwa said.

He would not be drawn into commenting on whether they had sought political help to have the issue resolved.Marry has however previously told The NewsHawks that she has engaged President Emmerson Mnangagwa over the matter several times, to no avail.

Apart from being denied her passport, Marry has also told The NewsHawks that she has also failed to access money for medication from her accounts because of political intervention, resulting in her relying on her family for treatment.Family sources said they felt helpless and could not confront Chiwenga over the matter, whom they believe is behind her persecution.

Marry is embroiled in a nasty divorce with Chiwenga and is also facing charges of attempting to kill the VP while he was hospitalised in a South African hospital. She is also facing charges of marriage fraud and externalising over US$1 million.

Marry, who is also facing another charge of assaulting a domestic worker, last year took to Twitter to express her frustration over the lack of assistance she was getting.”I have approached the current President many times, he has done nothing and has completely ignored me, citing reasons that his subordinate does not take instructions from him, who is the boss now?”

Marry wrote on microblogging site Twitter in October.

“If E.D.M (Mnangagwa) wanted to help me, he would have done so, a long time ago because he knows there is no grain of truth in all these fabrications, he had put me out in the open to be terminated, he promised vehicles, security, accommodation since I am being denied access to my homes and all my bullet proof vehicles taken from me, my money and all but absolutely nothing.

“She has also been denied access to her children aged 11, 10 and eight, whom she has not seen or spoken to in more than two years.

Marry has on several occasions collapsed outside the courts as she struggles with ill-health while she has been continuously denied her passport.

Other people who face criminal charges have been allowed to travel for medical reasons. This has raised fears that a big political hand could be behind the action against her.

When The NewsHawks asked Mtetwa on Thursday to shed light on Marry’s current state of health in hospital, she referred questions to her mother, who was unreachable on mobile phone.

Free Meat For Vic Falls Residents As Bus Rams Into Herd Of Elephants

It is rare for those who witness road accidents to smile, but hundreds of villagers near Victoria Falls yesterday had a bus accident to thank after they walked away with chunks of meat after three elephants were killed in the accident.

Elephant killed by bus

However, all 18 passengers and the bus crew were not injured after the CAG Travellers bus they were travelling in rammed into a herd of elephants about 35km outside Victoria Falls, killing three jumbos on the spot.

The accident occurred just after 5am near Mbizha turn off along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls road.

Witnesses commended the bus driver, Mr Daniel Mapfumo, for managing to control the bus and avoiding hitting trees in the process, as the bus stopped on the side of the road about 50 metres from where the carcasses were.

Villagers skin elephants that were hit by a CAG Travellers bus yesterday

The news crew visited the accident scene and found scores of villagers from nearby Masikili and Mbizha villages, as well as some from as far as Lupinyu (about 20km away), some from Victoria Falls City, Chikandakubi and Chenamisa already gathered waiting to share the meat.

Some came on bicycles, cars and scotch carts while some boarded public transport from Victoria Falls and police were kept busy controlling the crowd.

Villagers were already skinning the elephants with Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority rangers and police monitoring the situation. The crowd kept swelling and by 11am, there were more than 100 people gathered.

The news crew observed tyre marks showing that the driver applied breaks before swerving to the left to avoid a herd of elephants that had “suddenly” appeared on the road, and then back to the road narrowly missing a tree which is just three metres from the edge of the road, and then to the point when he hit the elephants.

The three carcasses were lying next to each other on the left side of the road.

“I suddenly saw the elephants and applied breaks while swerving to the left.

There were three groups so as I avoided the first, I saw another herd ahead. The three were in the middle of the road and suddenly they turned at once, giving their back to the bus and they were hit at once,” said the driver, Mr Mapfumo.

A witness Mr Arnold Sibanda who was driving behind the bus when the accident occurred, commended Mr Mapfumo’s driving skills.

“It was early in the morning because the bus left Victoria Falls at 5am.

This is a crossing area for elephants and he encountered a large group that was crossing to the direction of the community.

The driver tried to avoid the first herd by swerving to the left.

He narrowly missed a tree and he redirected the bus back to the road,, but there was another herd that was in the middle of the road as it was crossing.

He tried to avoid hitting the second herd, but there was no chance.

The bus hit the three elephants, but the driver worked hard to save lives and controlling the bus until it stopped.

I was driving at 90km per hour behind the bus which means it was traveling at almost the same speed,” said Mr Sibanda.

Village head for Masikili Village one, Mr Lowani George Moyo said while the accident was unfortunate, villagers were happy to get the meat.

Nonetheless, Zanu-PF Hwange District Coordinating Committee chair Cde Matthew Muleya urged drivers to exercise caution especially when driving along the Victoria Falls-Bulawayo road because of the presence of wildlife.

“Animals cross from the national park to communities so drivers should be cautious so that we save lives.

These buses travel at night and we urge them not to speed on this road,” he said.

Passengers were switched to another bus and proceeded with their journey. Police could not immediately comment on the accident. Sunday News

Harvest House Violence Escalates As Another Member Is Attacked And Injured

By A Correspondent| An MDC-T member Celine Nyakutsikwa has confirmed being violently attacked at Harvest House for speaking out Post by elections about the their movement’s poor showing.

Harare provincial chairperson and Epworth candidate Zivai Mhetu was on Friday barred from entering Harvest House by party thugs after publicly declaring that the party was rejected by the people.

MDC-T performed dismally in the just ended by elections with the party failing to win a single seat or council election in what has destabilised the movement.

Below is Nyakutsikwa’s full statement;

Good afternoon MDC Cadres.

Today I went to Harvest house around 11am , As i walked in, in front of me there was the Party National Chairman Sen.Morgen Komichi who was going to his office.. I walked up the stairs towards 5th floor, I was RUDELY and VIOLENTLY approached by one Getrude who is a security personnel of the party. I do not know what gave this woman the right to lay her hands on me? She manhandled me before pushing me down the stairs of 5th floor resulting in me suffering a sprain in my right leg.

She reiterated that I was not allowed to get into that building together with the likes of Chiposi and Magaisa…

I immediately went to REPORT the ASSAULT case to the police at Harare Central and the docket was opened against this hooligan in question.

After the report, the police went to HH in search of this Getrude person but they were denied entry into the building by some unruly thugs manning the entrance to the building. She was still inside hiding from the long arm of the law, unfortunately it is too long for her to succeed in hiding forever. It will soon catch up with her today or tomorrow.

As I write this, I’m currently at Pariranyatya hospital having my leg checked by a Doctor as advised by the Police who gave me Request for Medical Report form

Violence in all forms should never be tolerated. I would like to urge all victims of such barbaric acts to always report such cases to the police rather than suffer in silence.

Below and in red is a photograph of the hooligan.

Im in so much pain.

Amnesty International Condemns Violation Of Human Rights In Zim

Tinashe Sambiri|Leading human rights watchdog, Amnesty International has expressed concern at the persecution of perceived government opponents by Mr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s administration.

Mr Mnangagwa’s human rights record is punctuated by torture, abduction and murder of opposition activists.

See below an article published by NewsDay:

GLOBAL human rights watchdog Amnesty International (AI) has accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration of gross human rights abuses, with human rights defenders, activists and journalists being the main target.

The AI report came shortly after Freedom House also painted a gloomy picture of the country’s human rights record.

In a report released recently, AI said ruling Zanu PF party supporters were the main perpetrators.

“The human rights situation continues to deteriorate with the government demonstrating hostility to human rights defenders, protesters, political activists and journalists.”

“They were harassed, arrested, prosecuted and subjected to prolonged pre-trial detention; one activist was killed allegedly by Zanu PF, the ruling party. Public hospitals remained underfunded and poor healthcare infrastructure put women and girls’ health at risk. Many people were at risk of becoming stateless,” the report read.

AI also said the government failed to support vulnerable communities during the COVID-19-induced lockdown periods.

“The cost of living increased and the government failed to meet its target to provide one million people with social protection and discontinued its COVID-19 social welfare packages during the third wave from June to August 2021.”

Analysts, who spoke to NewsDay, said the human rights abuses were likely to continue as the country headed for the 2023 harmonised elections.

But Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa rubbished the AI report saying it was premised on a regime change agenda.

“Their euro-centric reports and pronouncements are inevitably and invariably opinionated, biased and prejudiced. With the war-induced mayhem ravaging Ukraine, one would think they have enough on their hands in Europe. Where are they getting the time and effort to meddle with peace-loving Zimbabwe?” Mutsvangwa said.

Man Goes 2yrs Without Paying Rent

A tenant in Northend, Bulawayo is allegedly refusing to vacate the house and has reportedly gone for a year and half without paying rentals.
The tenant, Mr Brian Chitsungo, was taken to court by relatives of the owner of the house after they had issued him with an eviction notice, which the family says he did not honour.

The matter is still pending.

According to Mr Zwelithini Malinga, who has the power of attorney over the property: “Mr Chitsungo did not have a healthy relationship with Mrs Susan Magaramombe (mother to the owner of the house).

“He would tell her not to put pressure on him to pay rent and at times exchange harsh words with her.”

He said that the tenant wanted to do things his own way at the house.

“There was a time when the roof was leaking, Mr Chitsungo contacted us, we instructed someone to go over and fix it, however, the person might have delayed.

“This resulted in the tenant getting it fixed at his own expense and sending us a receipt for the costs stating that we should pay him as soon as possible without fail,” added Mr Malinga.

He noted that from November 2020 up to end of March, Mr Chitsungo has never paid rent and efforts to remove him from the house have been in vain.

“Mr Chitsungo said we can take him to any court in Bulawayo, he is not scared.

He is not cooperating, we have tried to have civil dialogue with him but it has been fruitless, and he has also put other tenants inside the house as well,” he added.

Commenting on the allegations of refusing to vacate the house, Mr Chitsungo denied them and said: “I have stayed in that house for 10 years and the problem started when my property was damaged by the rains last year.

They refused to pay me back and I do not owe them anything.”

He said he was not given any notice and only heard about it when they wanted to do an arbitrary eviction on him and have been giving excuses while not producing proof. -Sunday News

Mwonzora’s Last Hour

NEWLY elected Bulawayo councillors belonging to the Citizens Coalition for Change are reportedly pushing for the ouster of the city’s mayor Councillor Solomon Mguni and Town Clerk, Mr Christopher Dube.
The councillors recently held a caucus at their provincial party offices, which was chaired by former deputy mayor, Mr Tinashe Kambarami and former Bulawayo Senator, Matson Hlalo, who sources have revealed that is eyeing a comeback as the party’s provincial chairperson.

Mr Kambarami is not a sitting councillor as he was also recalled by the MDC-T, from representing ward three.

He is, however, challenging his recall in the courts which meant the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission could not go ahead with by-elections in the said ward.

Eight councillors from the CCC won the by-elections that were held on 26 March, namely Clr Edwin Ndlovu (Ward 8), Clr Donaldson Mabuto (Ward 9), Alderman Lilian Mlilo (Ward 12), Clr Concilia Mlalazi (Ward 18), Clr Christopher Dube (Ward 19), Ald Earnest Rafomoyo (Ward 20), Clr Tinevimbo Maposa (Ward 21) and Clr Mpumelelo Moyo (Ward 26).

CCC sources have since revealed that the caucus took place at the party offices before a mini-celebration party at a leisure spot in Fourwinds, which was also attended by Ward Two councillor Joyce Ndlovu, who was voted into office under an MDC-T ticket.

“The caucus took place on Wednesday, chaired by Kambarami and Senator Hlalo and among other things it was agreed that they push for the ouster of the Mayor and the Town Clerk. This will be done through a motion of no-confidence against the duo.

“However, the possible hold up was the issue of raising the numbers since they are a minority. Kambarami chaired the caucus and he made it clear that the councillors’ mandate was to get rid of Clr Mguni and also reverse a number of policies, including the parking management system contract,” said the source.

However, the party’s caucus secretary, Clr Mabuto refuted the allegations, instead revealing that theirs was all about unity and advancing the aspirations of the city’s residents.

“We had a meeting, that I can confirm, but I cannot say it was a caucus, it was more of a celebration meeting by the eight winning councillors and other party members.

Further, I must dismiss the speculation that is going around that we want to oust the mayor or deputy or town clerk, that is not true, we are not going to council to cause a turmoil.

“All that we are focusing on is pushing for development and creating a reconnect between council and the residents.

We also want to raise pertinent questions on issues such as the parking management system tender, our colleagues should give us answers on this issue,” said Clr Mabuto.

Mr Kambarami, while confirming that the caucus took place, said their aim was to congratulate the newly elected councillors and also give them direction on how they will conduct council business once they are sworn into office.

“The meeting was mainly to congratulate the councillors who won under the party ticket.

As a new party we were also giving them direction on how they will conduct council business going forward considering that they are just a minority within the council chambers.

Further, we deliberated on the issue of the parking management system which is causing a lot of tension in the city and how they are going to handle it,” said Mr Kambarami.

He refuted allegations that they were pushing for the ouster of Clr Mguni and Mr Dube, claiming the matter was never discussed.

During his tenure as Deputy Mayor, Mr Kambarami made headlines when he made moves to oust Mr Dube from office while Clr Mguni was away in South Africa. The move was, however, reversed.

Massive COVID Vaccine Backlog

Zimbabwe is battling against time to administer over 14 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines that are already in its stocks amid concerns of public complacency and hesitancy, it has been established.

There are fears the vaccines might expire before use or become less effective as they draw closer to their best-by date.

The government on March 20 launched a Covid-19 vaccination blitz that includes jabbing children aged 12 and above to revive the faltering inoculation campaign after targets to vaccinate at least 70% of the population in order to reach herd immunity by December 2021 were missed.

In March last year, Zimbabwe set targets to vaccinate 60% of its population of nearly 16 million—translating to herd immunity—to halt the spread of the coronavirus and re-open an economy that has been battered by two years of lockdown restrictions.

The threshold was later reviewed upwards to 70% by the World Health Organisation (WHO) by mid-2022.

Governments in Africa, including in Zimbabwe, have been struggling to roll out the Covid-19 vaccination programme due to logistical problems, hesitancy that is largely blamed on lack of information and misinformation as well as complacency.

Investigations by The Standard in collaboration with the Information Development Trust (IDT), a non-profit organisation that supports journalists to investigate issues of corruption in the public sector and bad governance, showed that Zimbabwe has received 22.4 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines since March 2020, but had only used eight million of the jabs at the beginning of this month.

The investigations involved tracking vaccination rates and delivery of Covid-19 vaccines since the first batch of 200 000 doses was received on February 15, 2021.

Zimbabwe mainly bought Sinopharm and Sinovac Covid-19 vaccines from China in addition to regular donations from Beijing as we reported from the time the vaccine rollouts began.

The country also received the same type of vaccines from the WHO’s Covax facility. It also received donations from India’s Covaxin and Russia’s Sputnik.

Less than 2% of all received doses have been donated.

The rest have been procured using domestic funding, which means the country has devoted significant amounts of its health budget to Covid-19 vaccination.

Zimbabwe’s vaccines uptake has remained low compared to the doses in its stockpiles, data from the Health and Child Care ministry shows.

According to the ministry’s situational reports, on March 13, Zimbabwe’s first dose vaccine coverage was 45% of the target population and 29% of the total population.

About 35% of the target population was fully vaccinated or had received two doses.

Medical experts said the fact that Zimbabwe had only managed to administer eight million doses of the Covid-19 vaccines in one year meant that exhausting 14 million doses would be a tall order.

Some countries in Africa are being forced to dispose of their Covid-19 vaccines after they expired without being used.

In Nigeria up to one million Covid-19 doses are estimated to have expired without being used in December last year.

South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo last year had to send some of their Covid-19 vaccine doses back to manufacturers because they could not distribute them in time.

Namibia last year warned that it may have to destroy thousands of expired doses due to a low uptake.

Zimbabwe, despite being a beneficiary of donated vaccines, handed 50 000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccines to Botswana in February this year and donated another 20 000 doses to Namibia.

Agnes Mahomva, the national coordinator on government’s response to Covid-19, said the vaccine donations were done because of Zimbabwe’s good relations with other countries when asked if this was meant to get rid of doses that were close to expiry.

“Zimbabwe has very good relationships with its neighbours and some have struggled to get vaccines,” Mahomva said. “It is, therefore, only strategic to help them.”

She said it was unlikely that the vaccines that were already in stock would expire before use.

“Remember access to vaccines needs to be for everyone in order to end this pandemic,” Mahomva added.

“Most of our vaccines expire at the end of 2023 and that is the end of next year.”

Johannes Marisa, the Medical and Dental Private Health Practitioners of Zimbabwe Association president, said ordinarily vaccine manufacturers do not indicate expiry dates on their products, but it was common knowledge in the medical field that vaccines lose their potency a year after being produced.

Zimbabwe’s last vaccine deliveries were received in September 2021.

“(Not indicating expiry dates) is done for security reasons on the part of manufacturers, but we rightfully know that after 12 months, the vaccines lose their potency,” Marisa said.

“So you cannot keep a vaccine for more than 12 months. So ideally, we must try to limit the shelf life of vaccines.”

Mahomva said the government had come up with a new strategy to increase the uptake of Covid-19 vaccines to reach the WHO targets to vaccinate 70% of the population by mid-year.

She said Zimbabwe’s Covid-19 vaccination programme was one of the strongest programmes in Africa.

“The country has, however, had its fair share of vaccine uptake challenges,” Mahomva said.

“This is despite the fact that the country has plenty of vaccines in stock.

“Uptake challenges are mostly associated with low-risk perception, misinformation and access issues.

“The country, therefore, recently went through a re-planning process and put in place additional vaccination strategies to address identified challenges.”

She said innovative approaches, including outreach services and targeted vaccination messages for key community groups, will be used in order to address the challenges.

“The main aim of the campaign is to ramp up the vaccination coverage in order to reach 70% of the total population by end of July 2022 in line with the WHO’s new global target of 70% total population coverage by mid-2022,” she said.

“The campaign is in collaboration with all stakeholders including community and church leaders.”

She said additional vaccine doses had been procured and paid for and were awaiting delivery once the government gives a green light to the manufacturers.

Itai Rusike, director of the Community Working Group on Health, said instead of donating vaccines, Zimbabwe must be pushing for a higher uptake to effectively fight the pandemic.

“Instead of donating our vaccines to other countries, Zimbabwe needs to come up with innovative communication strategies in order to increase vaccine uptake and accelerate towards achieving the required herd immunity of vaccinating at least 70% of the population of about 13 million Zimbabweans,” he said. Full Text : Zimbabwe Council Of Churches Report On By-elections

The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) has expressed concern over the manner in which the 26 March by-elections were conducted.

In its report titled “Ecumenical Election Observation Preliminary Findings on the 26 March 2022 By-elections”, ZCC noted that some opposition parties were barred from holding campaign rallies, while ZEC failed to handle the voters’ roll properly. Read the report:

The Church noted that the political playing field remained unequal for political parties. Frequent suppression of some opposition parties was observed during the pre-election period.

The Church is concerned about this selective application of the law as it undermines confidence in Law Enforcement Institutions.

Some opposition political parties faced challenges in holding their campaign rallies across the country, as the police would either deny their applications or accept them with stiff restrictions or conditions, which would not apply to other political parties.

ZEC’s handling of the voter’s roll raised a lot of concerns before and during the elections.

ZCC also noted that in Kwekwe, Mbizo Constituency, Ward 1 Mbizo Youth Centre Polling Station, a Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party agent was assaulted by an unidentified man.

There were also cases of assisted voters in all wards, notably, the 21 youths who were assisted voters at Ward 4 Matione Primary School in Chipinge.

ZCC said there was an increase in the number of returned voters due to a lack of identity documents (IDs), missing names and misspelt names on the voters’ roll.

Despite acknowledging positive strides made by ZEC in areas such as voter registration and gender sensitivity, ZCC said there is still room for improvement in the areas of voters’ roll management, polling station accessibility by PWDs and elderly voters.- VOA

Mnangagwa Under Spotlight For Killing Perceived Opponents

Churches Concerned Over March By Elections

Mwonzora’s MDC T Reduced To A Toddler

These recently held by-election have grossly exposed President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s created official opposition which he tried to install without following an electoral process.

By Leonard Koni- The gross manipulation by Zanu PF to destroy what the people have endured to built is now on public domain. The people have rejected Zanu-PF’s puppet masquaranding as the official opposition party in Zimbabwe.

Now the Zimbabwe’s smaller opposition party MDC-T/MDC Alliance led by Mr Douglas Mwonzora has received a rude awakening and performed dismally  in these last held critical by-elections which he ironically caused by recalling members of parliament and councillors.

Mwonzora and Zanu PF previously laughed at Nelson Chamisa calling him a cry baby who was partyless and without any place to conduct his business from. They forgot to realise that Chamisa is a crowd puller.

Mwonzora started showing signs and symptoms of political sterile and menopause in 2020. His MDC-T party is going extinct as it got a single digit across the country.

However there were some voters from MDC-T who caused voter apathy and remained neutral. They did not bother to cast their vote and felt duped and conned by the likes of Mwonzora, Komichi and Mudzuri into believing that they were a strong political outfit. Come 2023 they will vote for Citizens Coalition for Change.

What an appetiser it was? This election has also been used as a barometer to measure the performance of two  political parties Citizens Coalition for Change and Zanu-PF readiness in 2023 harmonised elections.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission will again be tested whether they will be ready to produce a free and fair election.

Zanu-PF wanted to sweep all these by elections to prove a point that Emmerson Mnangagwa is the best foot forward  but this has worsened and dented his chances of winning in next year’s harmonised elections. Zanu-PF is slowly being dismantled.

This is time to have a minute of silence in remembrance of the former labour party MDC- T which gave sleepless nights to Zanu PF for the past 22 years. It was born on the 1st of September 1999 and buried on Saturday 26 March 2022.

This was a pride of many democratic Zimbabweans but died a painful and shameful death after being sold to a poor aging revolutionary party.

Mugabe Started Zim’s Political Patronage

By Nomusa Garikai- There will be no meaningful economic recovery as long as Zimbabwe remains a pariah state ruled by corrupt and incompetent thugs who rig elections to stay in power. Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) reminded us all (for the umpteenth time) of this political and economic reality at the conclusion of the Board’s Article IV Consultation with Zimbabwe on 21 March 2022.

“IMF reports have repeated calls on the need for inclusive growth and sincerity in reengaging the international community,” commented Victor Bhoroma in an article in Bulawayo 24.

“Other areas of concern include the need for coordination between fiscal, foreign-exchange and monetary policies to guarantee market stability. Structural reforms aimed at improving the business climate (streamlining taxation, exchange control and trade policies) and curbing corruption through prosecuting high-profile cases remain key to Zimbabwe’s path to stability.

“In February 2020, IMF warned that Zimbabwe’s reform agenda was off track and the government needed to urgently address governance and corruption challenges, entrenched vested interests, and improve enforcement of the rule of law to improve the business climate and support private sector led inclusive growth.”

President Mnangagwa’s political power base, like that of Robert Mugabe before him, is founded on political patronage, in which he, as the top dog dishes out wealth and power to those below him in return for their continued blind political support. Any meaningful political and economic reforms cannot be carried out without dismantling the patronage system. Dismantle the patronage system and Mnangagwa and Zanu PF will lose, overnight, their iron grip on power.

Zanu PF’s political patronage system dates back to 1980.

In a recent interview with Trevor Ncube, in Conversation With Trevor, Dr Simba Makoni revealed how within just a few months after independence in 1980 then Prime Minister Robert Mugabe surprised his ministers and deputy ministers by replacing their Ian Smith issued Peugeot 504 ministerial cars with Mercedes Benz limousines. The limousines had not been budgeted for none was the purchase ever discussed much less approved by cabinet. Of course, everyone was chuffed to bits with their limo!

The limo gift was followed by generous salaries and allowance for the chefs. Before long ministers and deputy ministers had three or four up market vehicles parked in the forecourt for their exclusive use.

Members of Parliament, senior officials in the civil service, Army, Police, Judiciary, parastatals, etc., etc. all received similar privileges. It was very common to hear of how parastatals like NRZ or ZESA was failing to pay its debts or the lowly paid workers’ wages and yet was spending millions of imported cars or other trappings of power for top managers.

What Mugabe did back in 1980 by buying the fleet of limos for his ministers and deputy ministers was to kick start Zimbabwe’s political patronage system; he bribed the cabinet with very expensive gifts and privileges and in return they gave him their blind loyalty. It is no exaggeration that Robert Mugabe enjoyed the status of a demigod whose word was the law, no one dared to question.

“Mose murivakadzi vaMugabe!” (You are all Mugabe’s subservient concubines!) scolded Margaret Dongo in sheer exasperation. She was talking about her fellow Zanu PF MPs and ministers’ repeated failure to challenge Robert Mugabe over anything, even on such serious matters as the 1983 to 1987 Gukurahundi massacre when the tyrant was clearly wrong.

Joice Mujuru was in Mugabe’s cabinet from 1980 and rose through the ranks to become VP in 2004 to 2014 when was she and a coterie of her supporters were booted out of the party. It was only she was no longer in the party that she dared to criticize Mugabe. “A puppy does not open its eyes the day it is born!” was her feeble explanation.

Of course, it was nonsense! Dotito (that is where Joice Mujuru comes from) dogs would have lifespans of hundreds of years if their puppies took 34 years just to open their eyes!

The Zanu PF political patronage system with its extravagant spending and waste was Zimbabwe’s economic undoing just as the blind loyalty to those in positions of power and authority marked the descend into totalitarianism and autocracy. By the end of the first decade of Zimbabwe’s independence the country’s economic decline was clear and undeniable.

So, in 1990 President Mugabe went, cap in hand, to IMF, WB and other financial institution begging for financial assistance. Zimbabwe signed the first of two five-year Economic Structural Adjustment Programme (ESAP) with IMF and WB in which the regime was given the financial assistance on condition it carried out economic and political reforms and dismantle its political patronage system.

“Everyone must tighten their belt!” argued Zimbabwe’s Minister of Finance throughout the ESAP years, Dr Bernard Chidzero.

Government reduced funding of public education, health care and many other areas affecting the ordinary people, forcing them to tighten their belts. The ruling elite continued to enjoy their expensive and wasteful lifestyles. They loosened their belts to accommodate the ever-growing potbellies!

President Mnangagwa and his Zanu PF cronies’ appetite for absolute power and the good-life it brought has been insatiable. Even now with the national economic in total meltdown forcing millions of ordinary Zimbabweans to live in abject poverty; still Mnangagwa will not dare implement any reforms that would impinge in any way on the potbelly brigade’s political power and/or extravagant lifestyles.

IMF has called on Zimbabwe to implement meaningful economic and political reforms to arrest the country’s worsening economic meltdown and end the tragic human misery it has caused. Sadly, Mnangagwa has not listened fearful of losing power if implemented any reforms. It is high time every thinking Zimbabwean out there join in demanding meaningful economic and political reforms because the economic meltdown has pushed this nation of the edge of the precipitous abyss.

“It is evident that the government knows what needs to be done and what is lacking is the appetite and political will to reform,” concluded Victor Bhoroma.

Of course, Mnangagwa and his Zanu PF cronies knows they must dismantle the Zanu PF dictatorship, they lack the appetite and political will to reform because they don’t care about the tragic human suffering the dictatorship has cause. We, the Zimbabweans, have done nothing to stop Zanu PF destroy the nation’s economy and with it our hopes, dreams and our future. It is incumbent on all Zimbabweans to make sure all meaningful economic and political reforms are implemented before it is too late, before Zanu PF drags the nation over the edge into the abyss!

Marry Chiwenga’s Family In Agony As Own Daughter’s Health Deteriorates

By A Correspondent- The family of Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga’s estranged wife Marry Mubaiwa say they are in agony as the health of the former top model deteriorates at a time she is being denied her passport to seek medical attention outside the country.

He would not be drawn into commenting on whether they had sought political help to have the issue resolved.

Marry has however previously told The NewsHawks that she has engaged President Emmerson Mnangagwa over the matter several times, to no avail.

Apart from being denied her passport, Marry has also told The NewsHawks that she has also failed to access money for medication from her accounts because of political intervention, resulting in her relying on her family for treatment.

Family sources said they felt helpless and could not confront Chiwenga over the matter, whom they believe is behind her persecution.

Marry is embroiled in a nasty divorce with Chiwenga and is also facing charges of attempting to kill the VP while he was hospitalised in a South African hospital.

She is also facing charges of marriage fraud and externalising over US$1 million.

Marry, who is also facing another charge of assaulting a domestic worker, last year took to Twitter to express her frustration over the lack of assistance she was getting.

“I have approached the current President many times, he has done nothing and has completely ignored me, citing reasons that his subordinate does not take instructions from him, who is the boss now?” Marry wrote on microblogging site Twitter in October.

“If E.D.M (Mnangagwa) wanted to help me, he would have done so, a long time ago because he knows there is no grain of truth in all these fabrications, he had put me out in the open to be terminated, he promised vehicles, security, accommodation since I am being denied access to my homes and all my bullet proof vehicles taken from me, my money and all but absolutely nothing.”

She has also been denied access to her children aged 11, 10 and eight, whom she has not seen or spoken to in more than two years.

Marry has on several occasions collapsed outside the courts as she struggles with ill-health while she has been continuously denied her passport.

Other people who face criminal charges have been allowed to travel for medical reasons. This has raised fears that a big political hand could be behind the action against her.

Chiwenga himself has on several occasions travelled outside the country to China, India and South Africa for medical reasons.

When The NewsHawks asked Mtetwa on Thursday to shed light on Marry’s current state of health in hospital, she referred questions to her mother, who was unreachable on mobile phone.

Corruption Haunts Chamisa Councillors

By A Correspondent- At least four Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) councillors elected in last week’s by-elections could have their joy short-lived following revelations that they face immediate suspension over alleged criminal abuse of office, The NewsHawks has learnt.

The plot to suspend the councillors, it has emerged, involves MDC-T councillors at Town House, Local Government ministry officials and individuals interested in doing business with the City of Harare.

The targeted councillors include former Harare mayor Herbert Gomba, who made a comeback through the by-elections after being recalled by MDC-T in 2020.

He had served as an MDC-T-sponsored mayor from 2018, representing ward 27 in Glen Norah.

The other named councillors facing suspension upon swearing in are Lovemore Makuwerere, Hammy Madzingira and Antony Shingadeya. They were all arrested last year and are facing criminal abuse of office charges.

“They (the four councillors) will not be allowed in and they are all going to be served with letters to stay at home. It’s not clear how things will develop because it depends on how their issues will end in the courts,” an impeccable source said.

Recently, The NewsHawks, working in collaboration with Information for Development Trust (IDT), revealed that some councillors — among them recently re-elected ones — were part of cartels fraudulently acquiring and selling municipal land in Harare.

The investigation, funded by the Fojo Media Institute and International Media Support (IMS), established that officials from the housing, estates and valuation as well as city planning departments were cashing in on a shambolic land bank.

Trusted sources indicated that the return of Gomba and the councillors might scuttle under-the-carpet arrangements that some councillors and senior staff had already hammered out in the absence of the four.

“A lot of things have happened in their (the re-elected councillors’) absence and their return will likely reverse all that and, on that basis, the plan is to block them.

“To do that, the issue of their criminal charges will be used as a basis to suspend them and ensure they do not interact with Town House at all costs,” another council official confided.

There is a precedent regarding the use of councillors’ history at Town House to further block them from resuming office.

Gomba’s successor at Town House, Jacob Mafume, is before the courts facing criminal abuse of office charges and has been repeatedly suspended by Local Government minister July Moyo, on the basis of the allegations that he is facing.

Moyo, a Zanu PF kingpin, is accused of using his office to frustrate and undermine opposition councillors so that the ruling party can gain a strong foothold at Town House.

“This move (to further suspend the re-elected councillors) is meant to protect deals entered into by the MDC-T — now led by Douglas Mwonzora — councillors and several companies linked to the government,” the second insider added.

“The city has warmed up to First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa of late and they are assisting her in several projects she is undertaking across the country. The return of the Chamisa councillors would compromise that,” said the source.

According to minutes of council’s Education, Health and Housing committee meeting of 29 July 2021 that The NewsHawks is in possession of, the local authority supported Mnangagwa’s Nhanga/Gota/Ixhiba and Nharirire Yemusha project that has seen her going on a whirlwind meet-the-people tour in both urban and rural areas.

Ironically, the committee that passed this resolution was previously chaired by Madzingira who has also been re-elected following a recall by MDC-T.

Madzingira is reportedly bent on reversing the endorsement of the First Lady’s project.

The minutes of the July gathering, which were endorsed by a full council meeting, stated that the local authority was open to future participation in philanthropic work by the President’s wife.

The CCC has already expressed its reservations regarding the Mnangagwa project.

The planned US$400 million Pomona dumpsite project is likely to face resistance from the returning councillors as well.

As reported recently, Moyo, the Local Government minister, reportedly arm-twisted the local authority to railroad the deal without following due procedure.

“That is one deal we will look at and you must know also that some of the councillors who were backing Mwonzora now have a point to prove that they are with us. They will do that by supporting our fight,” a senior Town House insider said.

Mafume and other CCC-aligned councillors who were expected back following the weekend polls have since described the deal entered into by German investors as “corruption on high energy” adding that there are many other deals being pushed through without due process.

The deal was signed by the City of Harare represented by the acting town clerk, Mabhena Moyo, and Geogenix BV represented by Miliad Lopa whose address was given as 520 H, 1017 EK, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Curiously, Geogenix BV has roped in controversial businessman Delish Nguwaya as its local representative in what sources said may point to the involvement of the first family in the deal.

Nguwaya is close to the Mnangagwa family, particularly the President’s twin sons Sean and Collins.

It also emerged that the Pomona deal was granted national project status to shield it from public tender scrutiny and protect it from being challenged, particularly by opposition councillors, through a “political force majeure event” clause.

Titled “Concession agreement to design, build and operate the Harare Pomona waste management facility and waste energy power plant”, the deal was signed in the presence of Moyo and Nguwaya.

Acting Harare mayor Stewart Mutizwa was not picking calls on the issue while Gomba said he was fighting to have his issues resolved in court.

He would not be drawn into commenting on the reported plot to bar him and other returning CCC councillors from  assuming office.

But on the charges he is facing, he said: “It will end soon. The court cases will come to an end.-Newshawks

Fissures In Mwonzora’s Camp

By A Correspondent- Losing MDC-T parliamentary candidate for Epworth National Assembly constituency Zivai Mhetu has come out guns blazing against his party president Douglas Mwonzora, accusing him of a plethora of flaws after being barred from entering their headquarters in Harare.

Mhetu was denied entry into the party’s Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House headquarters by angry youths who included member of parliament Yvonne Musarurwa after confessing that his association with ‘tainted’ leader Mwonzora cost him the seat.

Anti-riot police officers had to be called in after the situation almost degenerated into violent clashes as Mhetu maintained he had the right to access the building.

A national executive meeting was underway and according to Mhetu his suspension was being finalised.

“I am the Harare provincial chairperson, I am entitled to sit in the national council meeting but as I was about to enter Yvonne Musarurwa and others blocked me and told me that I had been suspended,” Mhetu said.

“They said my suspension letter was being prepared. I am sure the reason why I am being suspended is because I reported what the electorate said in the run up to the by-elections as I campaigned in Epworth. I did not know that I was going to be punished for telling the truth.”

Mhetu’s predicament started when he told the media that Epworth residents indicated they would not vote him because of his association with Mwonzora although he was their preferred candidate.

The seat was won by Zanu-PF’s Zalera Makari.

“I wanted to raise the motion that Mwonzora steps down after our loss. Being the president you are the chief executive officer (CEO) and he is responsible for our failure to win even one seat in the by-elections,” Mhetu said.

Mwonzora told journalists Monday the loss was not worth writing home about as he had “missed a penalty like all football stars sometimes do.”

He only managed 745 votes with Makari getting 10 246 and CCC’s Kureva Earthrage coming out second on 8 283 votes.

Mhetu questioned Mwonzora’s loyalties, arguing that he could confirm his ties with ruling Zanu-PF as was hinted by party chairperson Moergen Komichi in a leaked call this week.

“He has been accused of dining with Zanu-PF. I can clearly state that Mwonzora is dining with Zanu-PF. He does not want top do anything that makes the party have a lot of supporters, whenever he is on the podium he is always attacking Nelson Chamisa,” said Mhetu.

“Since the time he has been receiving government funds he has never funded crucial departments such as the security, the organising, the information and recruitment departments.”

Mwonzora has indeed not shared proceeds of the Political Parties (Finance) Act with anyone, including parties that make up the opposition coalition MDC Alliance.

ZRP Worried Over Rampant Corruption

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi has expressed concern over rampant corruption among police officers.

He singled out Beitbridge as the most corrupt town.

In a statement Friday, Nyathi said 17 corrupt cops have been arrested and brought to court on graft charges in the border town this year.

In a statement Friday, Nyathi said 17 corrupt cops have been arrested and brought to court on graft charges in the border town this year.

The Security Services of Zimbabwe are concerned with reports of rampant smuggling at the country’s borders, coupled with accusations of corruption by some deployed members of the services at Beitbridge Border Post.

The security services categorically state that any member who engages in corruption will be arrested without fear or favour as shown in a recent incident where 17 members of the security services were arrested and arraigned before the courts.

Transporters and clearing agents are expected to lead by example and shun acts of corruption and enticing members of the security services through corrupt tendencies.

Critics say the chaos is just the tip of the iceberg of how corrupt government operations have become.

The 17 members of the security forces are part of many others who have been arrested for crimes that include fraud, armed robbery and corruption.

MDC T Kicks Out Provincial Chair

By A Correspondent- MDC-T Harare provincial chairman Zivai Mhetu was kicked out of the Morgan Tsvangirai House after a video of him claiming he lost Epworth to Zanu PF because people did not like the “jacket” he was putting on in apparent reference to the party he was representing.

Mhetu said he was forced out of the party headquarters by the late party leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s son, Vincent.

He said he wanted to move a motion for the expulsion of Douglas Mwonzora from the party top post for lack of leadership qualities, abuse of funds and violation of party constitution.

He told The NewsHawks that Mwonzora does not have leadership qualities and cannot even manage his own life

Party national chairman Morgen Komichi was also recorded saying the party has been rejected by the voters.-newshawks

Kazembe Kazembe Warned

By A Correspondent- Zanu PF Mashonaland Central province party chairman Kazembe Kazembe was yesterday warned by President Emmerson Mnangagwa over abuse of power at a rally in Shamva.

Capitalising on the clean up exercise Kazembe organised a rally that was addressed by the president

Kazembe do you see this crowd, it belongs to ZANU PF do not abuse your power, if you abuse it l will deal with you vigorously,” Mnangagwa said.

Kazembe has been making headlines for wrong reasons within ZANU PF provincial circles among them dubious co-options and allegations of vote rigging the provincial elections.

However, the province is still divided as some supporters claim Kazembe won the provincial chairmanship by rigging his rival Tafadzwa Musarara with the help of security elements belonging to the police force.

Mnangagwa, Tsvangirai Plotted Mugabe Coup

By- Reports say that Zanu PF’s Emmerson Mnangagwa and late MDC founding president Morgan Tsvangirai plotted the ouster of late President Robert Mugabe at the turn of the millennium.
Mugabe was later ousted in 2007 by Mnangagwa through a military coup.
Just before Mugabe resigned, Tsvangirai addressed thousands of people gathered outside Parliament building where he urged the former Zanu PF leader to “step down immediately to avoid impeachment”.
Mugabe resigned before he was impeached.
Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa on Thursday claimed that the late trade unionist played a crucial role in President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ascendancy.
Tsvangirai succumbed to cancer of the colon in South Africa in February 2018.
Before his death, Mnangagwa and his deputy Constantino Chiwenga visited Tsvangirai’s Highlands home and pledged to pay his medical bills.
After his death, Mnangagwa told mourners at Tsvangirai’s home that government would look after the former trade unionist’s family.
“We kept Mugabe in office when the threat was from the West. You do not open your armpits when the enemy is at the gate. So when we saw that there was a chance to deal with Mugabe we dealt with Mugabe in a very surgical manner where even themselves (opposition) became part of that process,” Mutsvangwa said during HSTv’s Freetalk show where opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) politician Job Sikhala was also a guest.
HStv is a digital television station run by Alpha Media Holdings, publishers of NewsDay, The Standard, Zimbabwe Independent, Southern Eye and digital publication Weekly Digest.
“We built a broad, united front and it is also to their credit that for a change there was wisdom just that the wisdom died with the demise of Tsvangirai then afterwards the party was afflicted with its usual falling to the Western countries.”
At the time, Tsvangirai is alleged to have lobbied Western diplomats to play down the coup and embrace Mnangagwa.
Mutsvangwa claimed that there was no love-lost between Tsvangirai and the military leaders although they blocked him from grabbing the presidency in the 2008 elections.
The military, then headed by Chiwenga, led a terror campaign against opposition supporters after Tsvangirai defeated Mugabe in the first round of the 2008 elections, culminating in a bloody rerun.
Tsvangirai later pulled out of the race citing persecution of his supporters, a development which led to the formation of a coalition government after the international community refused to recognise Mugabe’s victory.
In 2019, CCC leader Nelson Chamisa, then MDC-T leader, told crowds at Tsvangirai’s memorial service at Hamunikwa village in Buhera that Mnangagwa had promised Tsvangirai a transitional government that would oversee the implementation of democratic reforms.
“He (Chamisa) does not know the role played which his former president Tsvangirai discharged in the birth of the second republic. The MDC previously had tried to unseat Mugabe as he became hold to corruption and responsible for all this litany of abuses he is talking about,” Mutsvangwa said.
“The war veterans who have always been the game changers in the history of this county did…We decided to do it because we have a pedigree in that we made Zimbabwe. That is our pedigree and when things began to go wrong, we intervened as war veterans.”
Reports in the Zimbabwe Independent in early 2000 said Mnangagwa and Tsvangirai had also worked together in a plot to remove Mugabe. Then Zimbabwe Defence Forces commander General Vitalis Zvinavashe was removed from office in 2003 after being fingered in the plot.
The plot, according to media reports, was to send Mugabe to Malaysia so as to facilitate a resolution of Zimbabwe’s economic crisis.
Zvinavashe, who denied involvement in the plot, was later deployed to the Zanu PF politburo and given a political role. He died in 2009. Newsday

Zanu PF Rigged Mutasa, Mrewa Parliament By-elections

By-Independent election watchdogs have raised concerns over the credibility of the Mutasa South and Murewa South by-election results amid fears that villagers might have been coerced to vote against their will.

ZANU PF grabbed the two constituencies that were previously held by the opposition.

In total, the ruling party won nine seats out of the 28 vacant parliamentary seats while the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) got 19 in the by-elections held on March 26.

Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) chairperson Priscilla Chigumba yesterday applauded the commission’s staff for handling elections well.

However, a preliminary statement on the by-elections released by the Election Resource Centre (ERC) and Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN) said verifying the Mutasa South and Murewa South poll results was not possible. The statement read:

It is not possible to verify the results for Mutasa South. While the average turnout for Mutasa South was approximately 35%, all of these polling stations had a turnout of over 50%. At the same time, over 90% of votes were cast for Zanu PF while for the constituency as a whole Zanu PF received only slightly over 50% of the vote.

These are indicators of community coercion and that voters were not able to freely participate in the elections. Given that the official margin of victory was only 549 votes, this community coercion undermines the credibility of the Mutasa South election and the legitimacy of the outcome.

For Murewa South, the average turnout was approximately 49%, but for these polling stations turnout was 60% and above. For both constituencies, the vote share for Zanu PF was over 90% – much higher than for other polling stations. This pattern calls into question where voters were able to freely participate in the process and if the results truly reflect their preferences.

The election observers also raised concerns over the high number of assisted voters in constituencies won by the ruling Zanu PF party.

Mnangagwa Shocked By Losing Binga Seat To Chamisa

By- Zanu PF lost the Binga North house of assembly seat to Nelson Chamisa’s Prince Dubeko Sibanda, despite investing heavily in the constituency.

According to Sibanda of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Zanu PF sent its top officials including Obert Mpofu, Kembo Mohadi, Constantino Chiwenga, Richard Moyo and President Emmerson Mnangagwa himself to campaign for the party’s candidate in a bid to win the seat for the first time in decades but this was all to no avail.

Sibanda won by 10 130 votes, defeating Kudakwashe Mavula Munsaka of ZANU-PF who came second with 7 971 votes, despite the immense resources poured into his campaign by ZANU PF.

Speaking on Twitter space on By-Election Results and Matabeleland Voting patterns on Thursday evening, Sibanda said:

It is important to give background to this by-election. It was clear that ZANU-PF had targeted Binga North to be one of the biggest prizes.

They put in everything, invested all their energy into Binga North, they wanted it at all costs.

For the first time, all bigwigs of ZANU-PF literally came to camp in Binga North.

We saw (senior ZANU-PF members) Obert Mpofu, Kembo Mohadi, (Vice President Constantino) Chiwenga and Richard Moyo – the ZANU-PF provincial chairman.

We also saw the District Development Coordinator (DDC), a newly appointed ZANU-PF member who is currently the DA in Binga going all over, threatening the traditional leaders that they have to act in a certain way or else they would be removed from their positions. We saw (President Emmerson) Mnangagwa.

ZANU-PF used a lot of money in Matabeleland North and a lot of resources in Binga North. They made sure there were a lot of people and development projects.

We saw a lot of tippers, graders, and caterpillars brought into Binga North for purposes of trying to (coerce) people.

They also brought bicycles. I’m sure the bicycles were seen by everyone but our ground was intact, solid and was never shaken. Those are things we witnessed in Binga North.

Sibanda was recalled from Parliament by the MDC-T in October 2020, which accused him of joining the rival MDC Alliance which was led by Nelson Chamisa at the time.

DSTV Hikes Prices With Effect From 1 April

DStv’s updated pricing for 2022 takes effect from today, 1 April, with prices on some services increasing by 4.89%.

The average increase across DStv’s pay-TV packages is 2.7%, which MultiChoice highlighted was significantly less than projected inflation for 2022.

MultiChoice said it had considered the challenges facing South African consumers and absorbed as much of the cost increase as possible.

“We realise that customers remain under pressure two years into the Covid-19 pandemic,” MultiChoice South Africa’s CEO, Nyiko Shiburi, said.

“These adjustments will help us to ensure that South Africans continue to enjoy the best value, and unrivalled access to entertainment, anywhere, anytime, and at the most affordable price.”

DStv’s Premium and Compact Plus subscribers will pay R10 per month more from today — less than a 2% increase in both cases.

DStv Compact subscribers will have to fork out an additional R20 per month, an increase of 4.89%.

DStv also increased the access fee from R105 to R110 but left its Box Office, Showmax, EasyView, and Add Movies pricing unchanged.

Since 22 March, DStv subscribers may only stream to a single device at a time. This change did not impact decoder-based viewing or Showmax.

A recent MyBroadband analysis revealed that South Africans could subscribe to Dinsey+ (when it launches) and eight other streaming services for around the same price as DStv Premium.

Notably, all of the streaming services in the comparison offered at least two concurrent streams.

The table below summarises DStv’s increases across its product offerings.

By A Correspondent- A Bulawayo businessman who reportedly lost about US$24 000 a fortnight ago to two thieves after they allegedly broke into his car had the money returned to him after he consulted a local prophet who reportedly invoked a curse on the thieves.

The businessman (name withheld) reportedly lost the money after the thieves forced open the doors of his car which he had parked outside his shop.

The businessman was said to have consulted Black Elisha, real name Mduduzi Dube, who is famed for his spiritual padlock which he used to “spiritually lock” them by invoking a curse on the thieves and warned that they would die within two days if they did not return the money.

According to a source close to the shocking incident, disturbed by the efficacy of the ‘curse’, the thieves reportedly returned the money the next day and dumped it outside the businessman’s shop.

“He seems to know how he was going to recover his money because he didn’t report the matter to the police.

Those people who were privy to the incident were shocked when they heard that the money had been returned,” the source said.

Contacted for comment, the businessman neither confirmed nor denied that he sought the services of Black Elisha in order to recover his money.

“I don’t think it’s a story worth publishing.  I am afraid that if published it will put my life and business at risk,” the businessman said.

When contacted for comment Black Elisha, who initially wanted to remain tight-lipped, later confirmed the incident.

“Yes, it happened, but I cannot divulge more details. It was indeed a brutal lesson to other notorious thieves who are terrorising people stealing their property.

As a prophet, I also have to protect my clients since client confidentiality is important just like that of a doctor-patient relationship where a patient’s private information cannot be disclosed without his or her authorisation,” said Black Elisha.

When B-Metro prodded him on the source of his powers, Black Elisha said:
“Although there are some people questioning the source of my powers, let me make it clear that I don’t use juju, but I  use the powers of God.

I am bound by the power of God to heal many illnesses, bring back lost lovers and money as well as fighting against witchcraft.

It is also my duty to assist people from being deceived,” said Black Elisha.

Black Elisha is also famed for his spiritual padlock which uses to lock unfaithful men or women and this saw an influx of people flooding his house to seek divine intervention.

The spiritual padlock, which he says can be used for anything, is mostly common among married couples and of late business people, who say keeps their riches at bay from thieves.-BMetro

Zimbabwe Council Of Churches Full Report On By-elections
