Mourinho Blasts Chelsea

Jose Mourinho has criticised his former club Chelsea following their big-money move to sign Mykhaylo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Blues completed an £87million transfer for the Ukrainian international on Sunday.

Mudryk has long been a target of the London side’s rivals Arsenal who saw several bids rejected.

With Potter desperate to reinforce his side in this transfer window after a string of poor results, the club quickly swooped in to sign the 22-year-old on an eight-and-half year deal.

But Former Blues boss Mourinho has poked criticism at the mega deal, referencing it in his post-match press conference on Sunday after Roma’s home victory against Fiorentina in Serie A.

When asked about using defender Marash Kumbulla as cover for Roger Ibanez, he said: “In order to get that quality, we must get the young players to grow. Tahirovic has this quality. We need a defender who can pass the ball better out of defence and Kumbulla is probably the one who does it best, but we need Ibanez because of his pace and determination. We need to find a solution, we can’t just buy Mudryk for €100m!”

The Roma coach added: “I am not expecting anyone to arrive. The director (Tiago Pinto) was very honest and direct, he said things in an interview that a coach usually doesn’t like to hear. Coaches always want to hear we have lots of money, can buy option a, b, c, d, build an incredible team. That is the dream. I worked at clubs with those sorts of practically limitless funds. There are more and more clubs nowadays who fit that profile, but it’s not our profile. We work, we give our all, we work with the characteristics we’ve got.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Prioritize Sound Health For Newborns

An estimated 5 million children died before their fifth birthday and another 2.1 million children and youth aged between 5–24 years lost their lives in 2021, according to the latest estimates released by the United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME).

In a separate report also released today, the group found that 1.9 million babies were stillborn during the same period. Tragically, many of these deaths could have been prevented with equitable access and high-quality maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health care.

“Every day, far too many parents are facing the trauma of losing their children, sometimes even before their first breath,” said Vidhya Ganesh, UNICEF Director of the Division of Data Analytics, Planning and Monitoring. “Such widespread, preventable tragedy should never be accepted as inevitable. Progress is possible with stronger political will and targeted investment in equitable access to primary health care for every woman and child.”

The reports show some positive outcomes with a lower risk of death across all ages globally since 2000. The global under-5 mortality rate fell by 50% since the start of the century, while mortality rates in older children and youth dropped by 36%, and the stillbirth rate decreased by 35%. This can be attributed to more investments in strengthening primary health systems to benefit women, children and young people.

However, gains have reduced significantly since 2010, and 54 countries will fall short of meeting the Sustainable Development Goals target for under-5 mortality. If swift action is not taken to improve health services, warn the agencies, almost 59 million children and youth will die before 2030, and nearly 16 million babies will be lost to stillbirth.

“It is grossly unjust that a child’s chances of survival can be shaped just by their place of birth, and that there are such vast inequities in their access to lifesaving health services,” said Dr Anshu Banerjee, Director for Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and Ageing at the World Health Organization (WHO).

“Children everywhere need strong primary health care systems that meet their needs and those of their families, so that – no matter where they are born – they have the best start and hope for the future.”

Children continue to face wildly differentiating chances of survival based on where they are born, with sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia shouldering the heaviest burden, the reports show. Though sub-Saharan Africa had just 29% of global live births, the region accounted for 56% of all under-5 deaths in 2021, and southern Asia for 26% of the total.

Children born in sub-Saharan Africa are subject to the highest risk of childhood death in the world – 15 times higher than the risk for children in Europe and northern America.

Mothers in these 2 regions also endure the painful loss of babies to stillbirth at an exceptional rate, with 77% of all stillbirths in 2021 occurring in sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia. Nearly half of all stillbirths happened in sub-Saharan Africa. The risk of a woman having a stillborn baby in sub-Saharan Africa is 7 times more likely than in Europe and North America.

“Behind these numbers are millions of children and families who are denied their basic rights to health,” said Juan Pablo Uribe, Global Director for Health, Nutrition and Population, World Bank and Director of the Global Financing Facility. “We need political will and leadership for sustained financing for primary health care which is one of the best investments countries and development partners can make.”

Access to and availability of quality health care continues to be a matter of life or death for children globally. Most child deaths occur in the first five years, of which half are within the first month of life. For these youngest babies, premature birth and complications during labour are the leading causes of death.

Similarly, more than 40% of stillbirths occur during labour – most of which are preventable when women have access to quality care throughout pregnancy and birth. For children that survive past their first 28 days, infectious diseases like pneumonia, diarrhoea and malaria pose the biggest threat.

While COVID-19 has not directly increased childhood mortality – with children facing a lower likelihood of dying from the disease than adults – the pandemic may have increased future risks to their survival. In particular, the reports highlight concerns around disruptions to vaccination campaigns, nutrition services, and access to primary health care, which could jeopardize their health and well-being for many years to come. In addition, the pandemic has fuelled the largest continued backslide in vaccinations in three decades, putting the most vulnerable newborns and children at greater risk of dying from preventable diseases.

The reports also note gaps in data, which could critically undermine the impact of policies and programmes designed to improve childhood survival and well-being.

“The new estimates highlight the remarkable global progress since 2000 in reducing mortality among children under age 5,” said John Wilmoth, Director, UN DESA Population Division. “Despite this success, more work is needed to address persistent large differences in child survival across countries and regions, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Only by improving access to quality health care, especially around the time of childbirth, will we be able to reduce these inequities and end preventable deaths of newborns and children worldwide.”

Importance Of Geological Mapping

Business Correspondent

Geological Mapping is an important tool in the mining industry.

Many people look down upon Geological mapping and just do simple methods in search of minerals for example dowsing methods to search for minerals.

Geological mapping is the process done by a Geologist in which he picks up rock units called lithologies in an area, picking the orientation and structural features on the mine.

Explaining the importance of Geological mapping:
One can know the contact zones which are important in gold mineralization. Gold moves in areas of low mean stress for example fractures, faults, etc if a Geologist is able to pic a contact zone he can be able to proceed checking possible mineralization in the cantact zone.

We at Inner Core Resources (Pvt.) Ltd offer Mining services from Geological mapping, reef mapping, Magnetics and IP in exploration for all minerals including Gold, Lithium, Manganese and base metals including copper, manganese etc. Exploration starts from desktop studies spanning to geological mapping upto geological reporting with our experienced personnel.

Why would you want to do this:

To understand the potential of your area,
This would be your guideline during mining…

Mwonzora Fires Mudzuri

By-MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora has suspended his former deputy Elias Mudzuri.

Mwonzora suspended Mudzuri together with several other party officials before summoning them for a disciplinary hearing for “gross misconduct”.

In a statement Monday, national party spokesperson Solomon Chikohwero did not disclose the charges being laid against the party officials but indicated they were “serious”.
“The Movement for Democratic Change has with immediate effect today the 16th of January 2023 suspended the following members from the party pending investigations and disciplinary action,” he said.
He went on to list as “accused persons”, Mudzuri, Norest Marara (secretary for party business and projects), Gift Konjana (Mashonaland West province chairperson), John Nyika (Masvingo chairperson), Den Moyo (USA province chairperson), Edwin Dzambara (secretary for education) and Edwin Kakora (national executive member).
Added Chikohwero, “The members are facing serious disciplinary charges and their suspensions are in terms of Clause 9.1.2.3 of the party’s constitution.
“The hearings will be conducted in terms of the MDC constitution and their rights as accused persons will be respected.”
Mwonzora and Mudzuri’s relations took a knock in 2020 when the former allies contested each other in a party congress to find a substantive leader.
This was after the party had broken ranks with a faction that was loyal to Nelson Chamisa, who went on to form his Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).

Why Was Army Granted Licence To Export Lithium Ore?

By Nomusa Garikai| “Embattled state arms manufacturer, the Zimbabwe Defence Industries (ZDI) has been controversially granted a special permit to export raw lithium by the government, a decision expected to inject life into the firm’s struggling operations, emerging details reveal,” reported the Independent.

“ZDI, which has a vast investment portfolio in mining and is reeling under a Western-imposed embargo that crippled the firm’s operations for over two decades, got approval to export lithium in October last year.

“The latest development comes at a time when Zimbabwe is experiencing a lithium rush following the random discovery of the lucrative and strategic mineral in some parts of the country, particularly at Sandawana Mine in the Midlands province.”

The attempt by the Zanu PF government to suggest the Army was being granted the licence to export lithium ore because ZDI is still under Western imposed sanctions is pathetic and irrational. If everything the Army touches is subject to the sanctions then why is ZDI able to export the ore but cannot invest in lithium ore processing plant?

There is a simple reason why the Army, ahead of everyone else, got the lucrative licence to export lithium ore. The Zanu PF regime owes the top brass in the Army and other security services a big favour and it is payback time.

The Army, Police, CIO and Prison Services played a pivotal role in the 2008 Operation Mavhotera papi, in which Zanu PF, berserk with fury, sort to punish the voters for daring to reject the party in the March 2008 vote. The country’s security services provided the backing for the Zanu PF militia and war veterans, who were the foot soldiers doing most of the harassment, beating and raping, and the security personal did must of the heavy duty abducting and murdering.

Mugabe rewarded the top brass in the security services for their role in keeping Zanu PF in power by granting them the now infamous diamond mining concession in Marange and Chiadzwa. The concession allowed the holders to mine without keeping a record of the quality or quantity of diamonds found, to whom the diamonds were sold and for how much, who were the beneficiaries of the sale and they were not under any legal obligation to declare their earnings for company or persona tax purposes. In short, the concession were a state approved looting scheme.

In time the looting schemes have extended to other areas such as gold and platinum mining and extended to other fields such as energy and it has been said that the service provider for ZEC data is an Army owned subsidiary.

The initial decision was that Zimbabwe will not export lithium ore in a move to build the smelting plant, create the much needed employment in the country and add value. A reasonable decision by all accounts.

“The Independent, among other questions, wanted to understand how ZDI was granted the green-light to export raw lithium and whether the military-controlled entity has short-term plans to beneficiate the mineral. This publication also sought to verify whether this was going to be a once-off shipment or a running deal,” continued the report.

The report that the Army has been granted the right to export lithium ore is not surprising in the context of the wholesale looting of the nation’s resources that is happening, especially by the Army. But the truth be told, there was probably no one willing to team up with the Army or one of the other looting syndicates to build a lithium smelter.

Let’s face it, Zimbabwe is a failed state, a pariah state, ruled by corrupt, incompetent and murderous thugs. The country has become the by-word for chaos and the criminal waste of human and material resources.

No one, absolutely no one would want to risk investing good money in failed state. Building a lithium smelter constitute a long term investment and not even the looters themselves would want to make such a long time commitment.

Right now, Zimbabwe is gripped with election fever. Zanu PF is set to rig these elections. There is widespread election violence and the country has failed to produce something as basic as a verified voters’ roll. And yet the election is going ahead regardless because the opposition are after the few gravy train seats Zanu PF is offering as bait.

The failure to hold free, fair and credible elections will only confirm Zimbabwe’s status a failed state. How is it possible that 43 years of independence and in this day and age, we still have no clue what constitute free elections!

Zanu PF has denied us our basic freedoms and human rights including the right to a meaningful vote. Before independence the rallying cry was “One man! One vote!” We acknowledge the right of very one to a meaningful say in the governance of the country.

Ever since MDC/CCC failed to implement even one reform during the 2008 to 2013 GNU, the new rallying call has been to “win rigged elections!” This is just an oxymoronic excuse for allowing Zanu PF to continue riding roughshod over the people denying them their right to free elections.

Holding free, fair and credible elections is the pre-requisite to ending Zimbabwe’s curse of corruption, bad governance and the pariah state status. As long as the country remains a pariah state there will be no meaningful economic recovery. None!

South African Rand Plummets As Power Crisis Deepens

The rand sank sharply towards R17.10 against the dollar amid heightened concerns over South Africa’s power crisis, which deepened yesterday, as President Cyril Ramaphosa cancelled his scheduled trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Rotational power cuts have severely crippled economic activity. Barely two weeks into the new year, struggling state-owned utility Eskom resolved to implement Stage 6 load shedding indefinitely, its worst-ever outages.

Investec chief economist Annabel Bishop said that although sentiment in global financial markets will remain focused on US economic data, the rand was likely to remain volatile as high commodity prices have seen substantial easing.

Bishop said higher metals and mineral commodity prices were a benefit for the rand, but the looming threat of Stage 8 load shedding, and persistence of Stage 6 so far, was eroding confidence in the domestic economic outlook, with no government solution in sight, pushing the rand weaker this afternoon as the president skips Davos.

“A worsening in rail and port capacity is a further risk for South Africa and to the rand this year,” Bishop warned.

“While global financial market sentiment has improved in 2023 so far, January typically sees seasonal strength in the rand, while the year is just at its start,” she said.

Eskom yesterday postponed indefinitely its scheduled media briefing due to emergency engagements with Ramaphosa, saying it would only update the nation about the state of the grid once meetings were concluded.

The power utility, however, said 14 generators were expected to return to service over the course of this week, helping to ease the pressure on the power system.

Story continues below Advertisement

As a result, Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha said load shedding would be eased to Stage 4 during the day from Tuesday morning, with Stage 5 load shedding implemented in the evenings, daily.

“Eskom cautions the public, however, that there is a high degree of uncertainty associated with this and that these changes will only be possible in their entirety if the units return to service as planned,” Mantshantsha said.

“Changes in the stages of load shedding can therefore occur at short notice, due to the inherent unreliability of the coal power station fleet,” he said.

Eskom procured an additional 50 million litres of diesel last week to run its open-cycle gas turbines, more and above the 50 million litres it received from PetroSA at the end of November.

It said this fuel will be utilised sparingly to manage the pumped storage dam levels and to limit the amount of load shedding during the day.

Meanwhile, Eskom said the summer planned maintenance programme is continuing, and will taper off during the winter months, helping to make more capacity available to produce electricity.

Meanwhile, the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) last week granted Eskom an 18.65% tariff increase for the 2023/24 financial year, effective from April 1.

This is notably below the 32% requested by Eskom, but more than three times the expected inflation rate for 2023.

This means that administered prices will continue to provide significant upwards pressure on local inflation dynamics.

Eskom said unplanned breakdowns currently amount to 16 173MW of generating capacity, while 12 generators were out on planned maintenance, representing 5 804MW of capacity.

“Worryingly, the energy supply situation is unlikely to improve over the short term, while demand is set to pick up as economic activity returns following the December break,” said Tracey-Lee Solomon, economist at Bureau for Economic Research.

“Sustained load shedding at current extreme levels is the most significant downside risk and drag on SA’s growth prospects,” she said.

Tobacco Buyer Banned For Side Marketing

Zimbabwe’s Tobacco Industry Marketing Board (TIMB) cancelled Leanrise Tobacco’s buying license after finding the company guilty of side marketing.

According to the TIMB, Leanrise illegally leased its license to Munyasha Tobacco.

Leanrise denied the accusations and accused the regulator of misinterpreting the law. “We are not side marketing and there is nothing to substantiate any allegation of such nature,” the company said.

Leanrise argued it is entitled to have agents to advance its business. “Any tobacco purchased by the use of the Leanrise license is tobacco purchased for Leanrise,” the company noted. “In any event, the Leanrise license cannot be used to purchase tobacco from growers who are not contracted with Leanrise.”

The TIMB was unpersuaded by Leanrise’s defense, however. “After considering the contents therein, your justification for leasing your license to Munyasha Agro Pvt Ltd and all circumstances surrounding the matter, the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board has decided to cancel your license in terms of the Tobacco Industry and Marketing (Prohibition of side marketing) Regulations, 2022 SI 77 of 2022,” the TIMB wrote.

Italian National Dupes Businessman In Botched Groundnuts Deal

An Italian National has been taken to court facing two fraud counts after he allegedly duped a local businessman in a botched groundnuts deal.

Maurizio Giannaolo Arezio (49) appeared before Harare regional magistrate Clever Tsikwa and was remanded in custody to Tuesday for bail application.

According to court papers, Arezio and his brother Gabrielle Areziu, who is still at large, approached the unnamed businessman who wanted buyers for his groundnuts two years ago.

They took groundnuts worth US$54,600 promising to pay in March, 2021.

Court heard they did pay and became evasive when the complainant made a follow-up.

It is alleged that between May 2021 and September 30 2022, the same complainant wanted to buy solar panels of the country.

The brothers approached him promising to purchase the panels on his behalf.

This was after giving him assurance that they will clear the outstanding debt.

Court heard they claimed to have funds in their foreign currency accounts.

They lied they would pay for the solar panels in instalments of US$60 000 using their foreign currency accounts in Romania, Dubai, South Africa and China.

“For every instalment made, the complainant would give them US$50 000 cash and retain US$10 000 until the outstanding debt amounting US$54 600 was settled,” said prosecutors.

The complainant agreed.

It is alleged on January 14, the brothers presented a fake proof of payment of US$45 000 showing that they had transferred the money from HSBC Bank China into Raiffeisen Bank, Bucharest Romania.

New Exhibition, The Shona Collective Opens On January 27

Mestaria Gallery in Alserkal Avenue will be showcasing a collection of traditional Zimbabwean sculptures by contemporary artists in their new exhibition The Shona Collective, opening on January 27.

The Shona art style is a centuries-old stone sculpting tradition of the Shona tribe — which used only a hammer and chisel to carve stone. These skills and techniques are passed down within families from one generation to the next.

The exhibition will showcase the work of nine Zimbabwean artists from their atelier, The Shona Collective. They are David White, Bywell Sango, Gregory Mutasa, Tawanda Makore, Royal Katiyo, Leonard Sezhendo, Lovemore Bonjisi and Witness Bonjisi along with Dominic Benhura, who is considered among the greatest Shona sculptors of his generation.

“I am excited to show the world how the third generation of Shona sculptors have transformed into producing more modern works with new types of stones that can only be found in Zimbabwe,” The Shona Collective founder, Demitris Petrides, tells The National.

While Shona artists demonstrate a striking range of styles and aesthetics, the sculptors all work with the same materials — the hardest varieties of serpentine gemstones such as springstone, fruit serpentine and leopard rock.

These varieties of serpentine are dense and have extremely fine grains and uniform structure, which make them an ideal raw material for sculpting.

Due to the natural weathering processes of these gemstones, their colours are often vibrant, ranging from yellow and green to brown and black. Along with the special and age-old techniques employed by the Shona sculptors, the pieces themselves are unique, one-off works of art carved from the earth.

“I am a strong believer that every single piece will find its predestined owner,” Petrides added.

The Shona Collective artists will be presenting their work in Dubai, as aligned with their greater mission in which to engage with a global audience and share the centuries-old stone sculpting art of the Shona tribe.

The Shona Collective exhibition will be running from January 27 until February 17 at Mestaria Gallery in Alserkal Avenue

Grenade Keyholder Explodes, Crushes Four Fingers Off Byo Man

A Bulawayo man (47) from Burnside lost four fingers after he sustained injuries when a hand grenade that he was using as a keyholder exploded. The man, who is a gardener, found the grenade on New Year’s Day as he was going about his duties.

Bulawayo Police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said the man showed the grenade to his friend.

“On January 12 at around 3 PM, he pulled the safety pin of the hand grenade and it exploded twice in his right hand. He was injured on the right-hand palm and was taken to United Bulawayo Hospital where he is currently admitted. Four right-hand fingers and half of the palm have been amputated,” said Insp Ncube.

“Members of the public are hereby advised and warned to take or consider any unknown metal as a dangerous object. Regrettably, a 47-year-old male took a deadly grenade for a key holder.

Tragedy As Family Buries Three Minors Who Ate Poisonous Mushrooms

By A Correspondent- Three children from Chivhu died last Friday while two were treated and discharged after eating contaminated mushroom in Range Village.

Prudence Mhangami, 10, died on admission at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, while Liona Zariro, 3, and two-year-old Mazvita Taderera died on admission at Chivhu General Hospital.

Family spokesperson Runzi Kanokora, 39, told H-Metro that two minors survived and have since been discharged from Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

“We lost three children after they ate mushroom they prepared for supper.

“Five children ate the mushroom and only two survived after receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Hospital.

“We are burying two of the victims today (yesterday) in Chivhu and the older one will be buried at her father’s rural area tomorrow (today).

“The five were staying with their grandfather. On the tragic day, the children picked mushroom on their way home from school.

“Their grandfather prepared sadza which they were going to eat with milk, and retired to bed a bit earlier.

Chiwenga Overpowers Mnangagwa

By-Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has reversed the appointment of a pro-President Emmerson Mnangagwa official appointed to head the National Social Security Authority (Nssa).

Public service Minister Paul Mavhima had recommended Agnes Masiiwa to take charge of NSSA following Arthur Manase’s suspension in July 2022.

Mavhima, is Mnangagwa’s close ally and they both hail from the Midlands province.

On December 29, Mavima wrote to NSSA board chairperson Percy Toriro recommending Masiiwa to replace Shava.
“I write to advise that it is time to rotate the acting general manager at NSSA. Shava has served in that position for six months,” Mavima wrote.
“It’s therefore, prudent to find another senior executive to hold that position while the forensic audit is being implemented.
“Previously, Masiiwa had been recommended together with Shava. I therefore recommend her appointment at this time,” he said.
In a folow-up notice to stakeholders, Toriro indicated that Masiiwa would assume the position from January 1.
“I also wish Masiiwa well as she assumes the acting general manager role for the coming period.”
“Her brief is to ensure smooth continuity of business operations and provide leadership at various levels of the organisation’s mandate execution at the same time overseeing finalisation of the audit process already underway. All stakeholders are advised accordingly.”
However, Chiwenga in a letter dated January 3, 2023 addressed to Mavima blocked Masiiwa’s appointment.
In the notice through deputy chief secretary for policy analysis, coordination and development planning in the Office of the President, Willard Manungo, Chiwenga argued that the appointment was a serious violation of corporate governance rules.
“Pursuant to good corporate governance, the honourable acting president advises that nothing should be done to remove the NSSA acting general manager in the midst of the forensic audit processes currently underway,” Manungo wrote.
But there is discontent over the move, according to insiders at NSSA who suspected the hand of Manungo.
“While Manungo’s letter has also sparked debate wherein individuals or parastatal executives cannot surely be in an acting position for more than six months and such as the case with Shava, Chiwenga’s explanations or reasons might not hold water as there are precedents at NSSA and wherein Manase’s prolonged stay (after his initial secondment from the board) and David Makwara’s six months-plus tenure were vigorously challenged,” an insider said.
The insiders said there was no evidence that Chiwenga, who is quoted in the letter was even consulted to veto Mavima’s proposal with the laws clear that in the absence of a substantive chief executive any other senior member can be appointed in an acting capacity.
“This is exactly the reason, and premise on which Mavima’s recommendation — and Toriro’s subsequent newspaper announcements — were made, but the prudent moves were thwarted or torpedoed by forces opposed to Manase’s return,” said the insider. Standard

CCC Tries To Recruit “Obama” Robert Chapman

CCC fishing for coalition.

By Patrick Guramatunhu | “At the outset I wish to affirm your Constitutional right to stand for President. My only questions, Sir, are: One – Do you realise that all you are going to do is divide those opposed to Zanu-PF, which benefits Zanu-PF and no one else? Two – Why not rather join and strengthen CCC?” asked David Coltart of Robert Chapman, leader of Democratic Union of Zimbabwe (DUZ).
The single most important question both Coltart and Chapman must answer is did the opposition lose past elections because the opposition vote was divided or was it because Zanu PF rigged the election?
In the March 2008; the only time Zimbabwe came close to holding free, fair and credible elections because SADC countries had forced Zanu PF to switch-off its vote rigging juggernaut; MDC garnered 73% of the votes. Zanu PF quickly switched the vote rigging machine back on and stopped ZEC announcing the results. The regime then spent the next six weeks recounting 5 million votes – whittling down Tsvangirai’s 73% to 47%, enough to force a run-off.
During the run-off Zanu PF punished the people for rejecting Zanu PF in the March vote. “Zanu PF has declared war on the people!” said Tsvangirai as he announced his withdrawal from the race.
SADC leaders engineered the 2008 Global Political Agreement, forcing Zanu PF to agree to the need to implement democratic reforms designed to stop Zanu rigging future elections. The fact that not even one reform was implemented during the five years of the GNU was Coltart and his MDC friends’ fault.
Tendai Biti and David Coltart have publicly admitted it is foolish participating in Zimbabwe’s elections without first implementing the democratic reforms designed to turn off the Zanu PF vote rigging juggernaut.
“The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious – withdraw from the (2013) elections,” confessed Coltart in his Book, The Struggle Continues 50 years of Tyranny in Zimbabwe.

“The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”
So Coltart’s excuse for participating in the 2013 elections was that the two MDC factions had “failed to agree a coalition” so that they would both boycott the elections – “the only logical step”.
Well four of the main MDC factions plus three other opposition parties did agree to form the MDC Alliance before the 2018 elections, whose presidential candidate, Nelson Chamisa, garnered 42% and 60% of the presidential votes according to ZEC and Tendai Biti’s parallel reckoning. A formidable opposition by all accounts. And yet, again there was no talk of boycotting the elections – the obvious thing since not even one token reform was implemented since 2013 elections.
MDC A leaders participated in the 2018 elections for the same reason they participated in the 2013 – greed.
2 / 2
Indeed, it was greed that had stopped them implementing even one reform during the GNU. “Mazivanhu eMDC adzidza kudya anyerere!” (MDC leaders have learned to enjoy the trappings of high office, they will not rock the boat!) boasted Zanu PF cronies when asked why MDC leaders were not implementing the reforms during the GNU.
Of course, David Coltart knows that Zanu PF is rigging the 2023 elections and that the opposition’s participation will give Zanu PF legitimacy in return for a few gravy train seats. For his part, Robert Chapman and his DUZ friends too know Zanu is rigging the elections and by participating they will be giving Zanu PF legitimacy all for the sake of the few gravy train seats on offer as bait.
There is still time for CCC and DUZ to come to some coalition arrangement before 2023 elections. Even if they do, they will still participate in these flawed and illegal elections no matter what out of greed.
43 years of Zanu PF corrupt and tyrannical rule has left the country is economic ruins and political paralysis – given the country’s many opposition leaders don’t even have the common sense to see the sheer futility of participating in flawed elections to perpetuate the Zanu PF dictatorship.
What Zimbabwe needs are a few Zimbabweans with honest to admit Zanu PF is rigging the elections and the courage to denounce this flawed election process and denounce CCC and others for participating out of greed. Deny the electoral process and opposition political credibility and you deny Zanu PF political legitimacy.
If 2023 election fail to produce a legitimate government the country will need a new GNU similar to the one in 2008. The subtle difference is that this time a competent GNU must be appointed so that all the democratic reforms are fully implemented without failure. – SOURCE: zimbabwelight.blogspot.com

Latest On ZEPs

By- Holders of the Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEPs) who applied for waivers are anxiously waiting for a response from the South African government, with just five and a half months remaining before the permits expire.

Visumuzi Sibanda, who is the leader of the African Diaspora Global Network, a migrant-rights organisation located in South Africa, claimed that the SA government has hitherto said nothing further about the extension or responded to new applications. Said Sibanda:

The major news we had was in October when the court hearing to challenge the termination (launched by the Helen Suzman Foundation) was postponed to the beginning of February this year after the Minister of Home Affairs said they still need more time to prepare.

According to the Minister of Home Affairs, less than 9 000 people in total made applications for either waivers or mainstream permits.

But up to date, since people started applying in 2021, they have not received any decision whatsoever.

The Department of Home Affairs has not said anything.

Sibanda said applying for new permits is challenging for ZEP holders as South Africa’s regulations state that applicants must have scarce skills to be granted permits. He said:

People were told they need to apply for mainstream visas so those that qualify should stay, meaning people can apply for work visas.

Applying for a work visa ideally means one has scarce skills but according to the new rules and regulations, it doesn’t mean you must only have a scarce skill but have a permanent job and a company that has offered the permanent job.

That company must have also advertised that job and found nobody in South Africa who can fill in that particular position.

This is the main visa that people must qualify for because the general visa no longer exists in South Africa unless one has a relative visa, where you’ve been married in South Africa.

Sibanda said the extension announced by the South African government was verbal and published in a gazette but was not reflected on the holders’ passports.

As a result, the ZEP holders do not have proof at hand that they are legally residing in South Africa. He said:

If you are arrested the matter may be postponed for seven days so that Home Affairs can ascertain whether your permit is valid or not.

Some people are losing their jobs because employers now cannot keep them in employment when they don’t see any valid visa and because of the new laws from the Department of Labour that prohibit the employment of foreigners.

He added that some banks are holding onto money belonging to ZEP holders and will not release the money, demanding that Zimbabwean nationals bring valid passports. | CITE

Zambia’s Lusambo Says Hichilema Must Support Mnangagwa On Sanctions

Bowman Lusambo

Zambia must use its alliances in the West to support the lifting of sanctions on Zimbabwe and allow the country to develop without inhibitions, the former Zambian Provincial Minister for Lusaka Province and Provincial Minister for the Copperbelt Province, Mr Bowman Lusambo, has said. He made an impassioned plea to President Hakainde Hichilema, who has joined regional calls for sanctions on Zimbabwe to end, to leverage on his close relations with the West to urge them to end illegal measures on Zimbabwe. Speaking at a media briefing last Saturday, Mr Lusambo, said it was unhelpful for the West to keep sanctions on Zimbabwe as President Mnangagwa has done well in bringing the country back into the community of nations through his engagement and re-engagement efforts.

“We want to urge the President, the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr Hakainde Hichilema, his friends — to those same people, the Europeans and the Americans, they wine and dine together — to talk on behalf of the people of Zimbabwe. The issue at hand is a very serious issue. When your neighbour’s house is on fire, even you, you are also affected,” said Mr Lusambo. He said there was no valid reason for the continuation of sanctions as the person that the West wanted to punish is deceased. “Cde (Robert) Gabriel Mugabe is a departed comrade. We want sanctions to be lifted on Zimbabwe. Zimbabweans are our brothers and sisters. We are not happy to see what has been going on in Zimbabwe.” As Zimbabwe prepares to hold harmonised elections this year, Mr Lusambo said the people of Zimbabwe must make the right decision by voting for someone who stands for Africa.

“We want the people of Zimbabwe to make the right decision. “The people of Kenya, they defended Africa, and we want Zimbabwe to defend Africa and to defend the region,” Mr Lusambo said. Mr Lusambo said he had no problem with opposition CCC leader Nelson Chamisa, but that he was accepting the support of the “wrong people” who wish ill on Africa. “He (Chamisa) is a good comrade, but he is being supported by wrong people, with wrong motives,” Mr Lusambo said. Zimbabwe’s opposition political parties, the MDC Alliance and CCC, have long been accused of being Western puppets being cushioned to effect regime change. Some Western governments have not made it a secret that they support the opposition with one Western embassy being in the habit of mimicking opposition propaganda on their official social media platforms.

The US has spent years denying the role of sanctions in undermining the Zimbabwean economy. However, in October last year, the US Department of State Sanctions Coordinator, James O’Brien, and Director of Sanctions Policy and Implementation, Jim Mullinax, admitted that American sanctions on Zimbabwe were indeed affecting investment into the country. “One of those reasons (why investors choose not to invest in Zimbabwe) is the risk that either newer sanctions may be introduced, or current sanctions are not clear,” O’Brien said during an online briefing. He admitted that “because of the duration of this (sanctions) programme” some would-be investors had decided to stay out of Zimbabwe. Under its latest measures, the US in 2022 imposed sanctions on a local business, Fossil Group, shortly after it invested in Lafarge Cement, in a move meant to cripple government infrastructure projects, which the two companies have participated in.

Herald Celebrates Ziscosteel Investor’s Non Existent USD300mln

The Zimbabwe govt owned Herald newspaper has celebrated the injection of a non existent USD300mln into the defunct Ziscosteel parastatal. The following state print, is silent on Kudakwashe Tagwirei who is the inner soul of Kuvimba Mining House.

Ziscosteel was has been shut for more than 10 years to date.

Mining giant Kuvimba Mining House, appointed by the Government to oversee the resuscitation of ZiscoSteel, is now on the ground following the completion of feasibility studies and the signing of the necessary contracts that should see the injection of US$300 million in new capital to kick start the rebuilding of the steelworks. Mining is expected to restart soon to create cash and revenue flows to power the resuscitation. ZiscoSteel board chair Engineer Martin Manuhwa said the new investor is putting in over US$$300 million to kick start the rebuilding of ZiscoSteel using modern technologies to produce high-grade steel. “Our start date following the signing of the final contract was supposed to be December 27, 2022, but the new investor is moving in now after meeting all the conditions that were set by Government and we have a business plan that will be tabled and will be approved by the Government and the board,” he said.

The new investors are bringing in new technology that would make ZiscoSteel one of the best producers of decarbonised steel in Southern Africa. “We will be using new technology in line with the fourth industrial revolution where we will have minimal emissions. We also intend to do modern decarbonised steel that will make it makertable,” he said. It was all systems go for the resuscitation of the giant steel company with most service providers having been awarded contracts to start business. “Technically, Kuvimba have moved in as you might be aware that not everything is done on site. I can safely say they are now on site and ready to go,” he said.

The company was starting by building up its human resources after losing manpower during its decade of closure. “We will be checking on key indicators of the contractor with much of it being financing of the operations, human resources as well as technological plan,” he said. “Over the first 90 days of the contract, we have seen Kuvimba deploying critical resources such as international consultants and legal practitioners to enable a smooth management transition. We now expect Kuvimba to catalyse the investment process with up to US$300 million capital injection in debt instruments while over US$1 billion is expected to be generated organically from the commercialisation of mining activities. “This is a new approach as previous mining was only a captive source of iron ore for the steelworks,” he said. The resuscitation of ZiscoSteel hinges on generating cash from mining operations and investing the proceeds to modernise and rebuild the steelworks. The strategy was accepted by experts as the most realistic way to timely revive the giant steel company.

Kuvimba House chief executive officer Mr Simba Chinyemba said ZiscoSteel was a national asset whose revival was crucial to the country’s economy.

“ZiscoSteel is an important national asset and our goal is to see the company flourish to surpass yesteryear production levels while creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs for local communities,” he said. Kuvimba Mining House has previously revived a number of companies and mines that include Jena Gold Mine, Shamva Gold Mine among others, it is expected to play a key role in the resuscitation of the giant steel company which used to employ over 5 000 workers during its peak.- state Media

Face To Face With Muvhevhi Firing Live Bullets

A Mutare man narrates how he met gunman Jaison Muvhevhi in Mutare.

The man yesterday recounted how he narrowly avoided being a homicide victim after a harrowing encounter with triple homicide suspect, Jaison Muvhevhi, who allegedly shot and killed three people in Hwedza last Friday before fleeing the country, only to be arrested in Mozambique yesterday morning. Raphael Nyahwema (23), a son to Mutare Boys High School caretaker, said he was in a drunken stupor when he came face to face with the suspected serial killer who had gone to the school’s staff quarters looking for food. He confronted Muvhevhi, demanding to know what the rogue ex-policeman wanted at the school premises.

This did not go down well with Muvhevhi who produced a pistol and fired three shots at Nyahwema, but missed. Nyahwema managed to flee from the scene and Muvhevhi disappeared. Muvhevhi sneaked into Mozambique through an illegal crossing point soon after attempting to kill Nyahwema. Witnesses said Muvhevhi stormed the school on Sunday afternoon and demanded food, before opening fire on Nyahwema who had confronted him. Mutare Boys High School headmaster, Mr Phillip Padhuze, confirmed the incident, saying Muvhevhi fired three shots in the school grounds, but no one was injured.

“Muvhevhi arrived at the school on Sunday afternoon and went to the school quarters where some of our staffers stay. He confronted one of the ladies and demanded food. “One of our caretakers’ son confronted him and he opened fire on him. He missed him and one of the bullets hit a geyser. “Our learners were not affected by the shooting incident as the gunman disappeared after firing the shots. Police swiftly reacted and they provided security for our learners the whole night,” said Mr Padhuze.

Jaison Muvhevhi is apprehended by Mozambican security forces yesterday in Manica, near Forbes Border Post after four days on the run

Nyahwema said he was lucky to be alive as Muvhevhi fired ar close range. “Muvhevhi confronted me when I arrived at the pavilion at the sports ground. He asked me to cook food for him, but I refused. I realised that he had a gun and since I was cornered, I tried to pick a hoe-handle and that is when he opened fire. “The bullets missed me by a whisker and I bolted from the scene shouting for help. He remained behind while I ran for dear life,” said Nyahwema.

Ms Zvikomborero Mangorwa who was first confronted by Muvhevhi while she was taking a bath, said he violently knocked on their door and demanded that all the house occupants should move out. “I was taking a bath when he knocked on the door. When I opened the door, I realised that there was an armed person on our door. He asked for food. He also produced a US$10 bill and asked me to buy him a roadrunner chicken to prepare a meal for him but I refused. “He asked where he was and when I told him that he was at Mutare Boys High School. He then asked for directions to Mozambique. “He was barefooted and putting on a blue work-suit. He pretended to leave but when my sister came back home, he confronted her. I tried to signal to my sister to be careful as he was armed, but my sister failed to read my signal. She continued talking with him as he was seated outside on the pavilion,” she said. “He lied that he was on a mission to kill baboons as he had heard that they were a menace in the area and the shots he had fired were meant to scare away the baboons. “He insisted that he wanted food and even said he was prepared to cook his own food but my sister stood her ground and said she could not allow a stranger in her house,” said Ms Mangorwa.

Zimbabwean and Mozambican investigators with the fugitive Jason Muvhevhi (crouching) at a police station in Mozambique yesterday

She said Muvhevhi left when he realised that there were some people coming into the house. “When some of the workers came to our house after hearing the gunshots, Muvhevhi started walking away. One of the phones rang and Muvhevhi came back and threatened to shoot him for speaking on the phone. He later walked away and disappeared into the thicket,” added Ms Mangorwa.

Asked how he was feeling in the aftermath of the near death encounter, Nyahwema said: “I am feeling okay since I am always drunk.” Muvhevhi then skipped the border into Mozambique, where he was arrested by that country’s police officers after creating more dramatic scenes. A source close to the investigation said Muvhevhi was unlikely to be extradited to Zimbabwe yesterday as there were formalities to be completed. He was also likely to first appear in a Mozambican court to answer to charges of illegal entry into the country and pointing a firearm at a police officer. Muvhevhi, who is understood to have been a gold dealer, killed an apostolic church prophet in cold blood as he was preaching in front of congregants in Hwedza on Friday afternoon. He went on to fatally shoot the officer-in-charge of Hwedza Police Station, Inspector Maxwell Hove and a male bartender, Munashe Mujanhi (20), while another police officer was seriously injured.

After killing the three, Muvhevhi escaped resulting in police launching a manhunt for him. Investigations have revealed that Muvhevhi fled to Mutare where he bought a navy blue worksuit at a shop situated at Wasu Mall before he went to Mutare Boys High School premises. A team of detectives and other security agents remained on high alert when they received information that Muvhevhi was still in Mutare and was likely to cross the border into Mozambique. They then alerted their counterparts across the border and provided them with Muvhevhi’s pictures. His luck ran out yesterday morning after he was identified when he was about to board a commuter omnibus in Manica, Mozambique. He was then arrested after a scuffle by police in the neighbouring country. A team of detectives has been deployed to Mozambique to carry out the due processes of the law before Muvhevhi is taken back to the country for prosecution.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest of Muvhevhi saying: “The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that the murder suspect, Jaison Muvhevhi, has been arrested in Mozambique this (yesterday) morning,” he said. Ass Comm Nyathi said the victims of the murder had been identified as Crispen Mubvana Kanerusine (62) of Zinzombe Village, Hwedza, Inspector Maxwell Hove (43) of ZRP Hwedza Camp and Munashe Mujanhi (20) of Mujanhi Village, Hwedza. “The injured is Detective Constable Tendai Mugova. The Zimbabwe Republic Police acknowledges and appreciates the support given by members of the public in the pursuit of the suspect. “Equally, we applaud the bilateral relations with Mozambican police counterparts which has led to the collaboration and arrest of Jason Muvhevhi,” he said. On Saturday, police located Muvhevhi in the Chiduku area near Rusape, and it is alleged that the moment he realised he was being pursued, he opened fire, sparking a exchange of gunfire with law enforcement agents that were heavily deployed in the area. Realising that he was being cornered, Muvhevhi abandoned his Toyota Allion vehicle and fled on foot into the nearby Chigora mountain. Apart from the car, police also recovered a Techno mobile phone and a ZRP FN Rifle loaded with four rounds of ammunition. Last week, driving the white Toyota Allion, Muvhevhi arrived at the apostolic sect shrine at 2.30pm where members had congregated for their Friday prayers, and immediately pulled out a firearm and shot at the sect’s leaders from point blank range. He then attacked policemen who had heeded a distress call. The lone gunman then shot and killed the Hwedza Police Station officer-in-charge and seriously injured another police officer. From there, Muvhevhi drove his vehicle to Mukamba Business Centre where he shot and killed another person, before speeding off.

Mnangagwa Torments Political Foes

Citizens Coalition for Change Namibia(CCC) condemns the arbitrary arrest of Hon Chibaya and others.

14 January 2023

Citizens in Namibia condemn in absolute terms the arbitrary arrest of Hon Amos Chibaya and other change champions in Budiriro, Harare . We demand their immediate release from Budiriro Police Station since the right to assemble is enshrined in the 2013 Constitution. ZANU-PF should stop manipulating the police. The police must be independent, they should not take instructions from the satanic regime which had run scared of the impending watershed elections.

This weaponization of the law by the clueless regime is a clear testament that ZANU-PF has sunken into oblivion. Banning our political rallies, arbitrary arrests, long pre-trial detentions, and closure of democratic space shall never cow us into submission. Change champions in Namibia continue to call for action demanding an abrupt end to the continued incarceration of Hon Job Saro Wiwa Sikhala who has spent close to seven months in the hell-hole of Chikurubi Maximum Prison on trumped-up charges.

It’s time to brace for dangerous freedom against this attempt to stifle constitutional democracy in the motherland. It is not a crime to support the alternative government led by none other than the organic and pragmatic Change Champion in Chief President Advocate Nelson Chamisa. 2023 is our certified year of the much-awaited revolutionary victory for social democrats in Zimbabwe.

Sadly, the purported protectors are the ones who are perpetrating violence by throwing tear smoke on the innocent change champions. The captured police assaulted Hon Machingauta’s wife and daughter in their quest to disperse change champions who had gathered as part of Mugwazo. Securocrats should perform their constitutional duties without interference from the executive. ZANU-PF is now panicking ahead of the harmonized elections which is why they are sponsoring violence across the breadth and lengths of the motherland. Recently, the gray change champions were brutally assaulted by ZANU-PF in Mrehwa North.

We demand free, fair, credible, and unfettered elections in July.

He returned to England to undergo further cardiac tests and has been advised to stop playing football.

Following his pre-mature retirement, Enock moved into coaching and was appointed as the coach of Brighton and Hove Academy at the start of this month.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Brutalisation Of Citizens Total Madness

11 January 2023

~From a Citizen's Perspective

**Continued Political Violence, Shadow affiliate groups exposes a desperate unelectable Political party, as harmonised elections draw closer.

In the past months there has been a rampant brutalization of citizens by any pf thugs as well as some partial authorities.

The victims of political violence, most of them are CCC members, journalists, civic society and church community.

The so called second republic is yet to arrest, book or convict any of the pepetrators, hence one may clearly see that the authorities and courts are captured.

The reluctant eye if not ignorance of dealing with political violence perpetrators actually shows that government and zanu pf have become 1 intricate partners in pursuing a certain agenda which is against the will of the people and the constitution itself. It’s high time citizens converge for a common cause irregardless of diverse political affiliation.

It’s a matter of building a New Great Zimbabwe that is economically strong, democratically peaceful through chosing befitting leadership.

Those that have been given or grabbed a chance and yielded nothing should make it a day and leave office for new ideas, new blood and entrusted ones.

Conductors of the failed Coaches should abandon or removed from the political room of governance because they won’t prove any good if they failed before “during Mugabe era & ED era”.

A wave of change should prevail over the so called 4 ED propagandist term. Fear won’t bring food or enough salaries to your tables “Civic Servants”.

Vigilance ,endurance and action is the only way out. Hold the bull by its horns , twist and turn , fall and rise one day you will be celebrating a more than $540us salary “Teachers”.

Shadow groups that which you join inorder to attract favour at lower level be it from your councillor or Headmaster are not worthwhile. We need change and not persistence on failed systems. It is better to watch from the terraces than cheer in favour Herods or Pharaohs of our time. It’s high time we support the Solomons with wisdom and the annoited David’s to take us through to a Great New Zimbabwe.

We might not like some the styles from these people for various reasons but there comes a time where should go for the better. 2023 elections are a do or die for Zimbabweans. Imagine going for 5 more years with the current level of corruption, unemployment, political violence surely we will be doomed.

The religious community has been hickjacked and now instead of preaching peace and grace they have been romped in to cheer Worldly bloody political groupings. Selling the gospel for pieces of silver in form of labelled cars 4ED. Religious leaders get back to the bible and show citizens the Godly direction of peace, justice and love ,tolerance. This election period is a test of our patriotism ,courage and desire to build a prosperous Great New Zimbabwe under the steward leadership of Advocate Nelson Chamisa.

Graham Potter Not Under Pressure At All

Chelsea coach Graham Potter has played down suggestions that he is under pressure and could be fired from his position at the EPL club.

The gaffer has had a slow start to life at Stamford Bridge after struggling to change the fortunes of the team. The Blues are sitting in 10th position with twenty-eight points from nineteen games.

This continued run of inconsistent form has landed him in hot water, with fans now calling for his sacking.

But for all the pressure mounting on him, Potter isn’t too concerned.

“There are always questions if you don’t get the results. I was under pressure after two defeats before the World Cup break – and that is from the media. In terms of the board,” the gaffer said ahed of Sunday’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

“I’ve had full support but I am not naive. If anybody that I work for thinks the problem lies with me then they have every right to say, ‘Thank you very much but it’s not working’. I accept that.”

On the players’ commitment, Potter added: “From what I see, they are professional, responsible, and honest. We’re in a bad moment and we’ve got challenges, everyone suffers from that point.

“January is always complicated no matter where you are because the window is open and human beings are human beings, but I don’t see any problems in that regard. I have the support of the boys and they have mine. We just need to keep working.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Mukwirimba sent Privilege his nude picture via WhatsApp and she showed it to her husband, Crispen.

Crispen took the matter up with the district and Provincincial Education Office.- H- Metro

Chiwenga Plots Coup Against Mnangagwa

By-Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has blocked a pro-President Emmerson Mnangagwa official from heading the National Social Security Authority (NASSA).

Public service Minister Paul Mavhima had recommended Agnes Masiiwa to take charge of NSSA following Arthur Manase’s suspension in July 2022.

Mavhima, is Mnangagwa’s close ally, and they both hail from the Midlands province.

Standard

25 Chamisa Aides Denied Bail, Join Sikhala In Remand Prison

By- The 25 members of the opposition CCC who were arrested on Saturday have been denied bail.

The opposition members appeared at Harare magistrate’s courts Monday under heavy police escort.

They were arrested in Budiriro while meeting in a private house.

Their arrests come after a wave of politically motivated violence against opposition supporters in rural Zimbabwe, raising fears of repression ahead of the presidential election this year.

The courts remanded the 25 in custody to tomorrow, Tuesday.

According to CCC, the private internal strategy meeting was held this morning at the private residence of one of the members in Budiriro township, about 15 kilometres from central Harare.
“It wasn’t open to the public at all. The Maintenance of Peace and Order Act only applies to public meetings in a public place,” CCC spokeswoman Fadzayi Mahere told Reuters.
Police allegedly fired teargas at the gathering and beat up several opposition members before they were bundled into a police truck, she added.

Some of the CCC activists arrested at the weekend
Zimbabwean law requires political parties to notify authorities two weeks before holding a political meeting.
“Zanu PF must stop abusing the police to stifle competition,” Mahere said.
CCC, led by the youthful Nelson Chamisa, will battle ZANU-PF’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa for the second time after he narrowly lost the 2018 vote.
The opposition party, born out of the old Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), enjoys massive urban support and is seen as a threat to ZANU-PF’s 43-year-old stranglehold on power.

Tryson Chimbetu Goes Mad

By-Dendera musician, Tryson Chimbetu, is said to be losing his conscience because of drug abuse.

The singer who first emerged as a promising Dendera singer, has become the talk of his community following his violent conduct and use of obscene language against his own mother.

He reportedly had a long fracas with his relatives on Saturday evening, among them his brothers, who wanted to take him to rehab at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

Reports say relatives wrestled with him for close to two hours as he resisted getting into the car.

Close sources said, he was bound, but still resisted violently.

“He was refusing to be taken to rehab at Parirenyatwa. He was now moving around the area with a knife, threatening to stab any relative who dared visit him.

“Although they managed to take him, he fought his brothers. It looks like he is losing his mind because of drugs. He was staying with his son, but he was very violent. He is accusing his mother of bewitching him,” said the source.

Tryson was refusing to go to hospital on Saturday, saying he feared for his life there.

“They want to kill me, remove these ropes. Sunungurai makumbo, I am not running away. Just untie me, Tindo loosen my legs. They will not go anywhere, they know.

“Leave me Solo, zvafumuka, leave me. Look, I will die, there is nothing like this; why did not you come with the police.

“If I get into the car, I will die, Shingi get inside. I want to sit alone, go and call the police, let the police come. Simba fight for me, that thing is coming, they want to kill me.

“I am crying for you Simba, you know they want to kill me, today is the day. I prayed today, I knew they want to kill me,” he said as he resisted getting into the car.

Another source said, he cleaned the house thoroughly on Saturday.

Akakwesha imba yese madziro achiti vanhu vakamuisira mushonga. Kukwesha madziro ese, just like someone who is under the influence of drugs.

“So, relatives took him to Parirenyatwa where they want him to be detoxed for a week.

“Tryson was saying, that vanhu vakamuisira mushonga kubvira mubhutsu, mumba, muhembe, and accusing them of being Satanists.”

Mliswa Fires Zanu PF Youth Boss

By- Zanu PF Mashonaland west has fired the party’s provincial youth league chairman, Tapiwa Masenda.

Mary Mliswa heads the province and doubles as the Provincial Affairs minister.

Masenda will be going through a disciplinary hearing within 14 days.

Masenda is said to have brought shame to the party’s name by beating up a Chinese national.

He is also accused of using the name of the party and his position to conduct the offences.

On May 2, last year, Masenda physically attacked a Chinese investor operating a mine in Mhangura.

While in company of three others, he is said to have requested for keys to the fuel tank where they filled a BMW X5 with diesel.
They also filled two empty containers with 60 litres of diesel.
Zhao Dang Han (59) and his interpreter, Strive Gandira (25) reported the case at Mhangura police station.

Masenda has been suspended together with the provincial youth secretary for administration Rudo Munyonga.

Graham Potter Speaks On Future

Chipolopolo Polo Star Suffers Heart Attack

Former Brighton player and Zambian international Enock Mwepu has reportedly been rushed to hospital after collapsing due to a suspected heart attack.

According to reports in Zambia, the incident occurred while he was driving towards Kabangwe, a small town on the outskirts of Lusaka, and his car was seen swerving on a major road. He eventually parked, and came out of the vehicle and fell.

The midfielder taken to the hospital in the Zambian capital and is said to be in a relatively stable condition.

Mwepu was forced to retire at the age of 24 after being diagnosed with a rare hereditary heart condition.

The diagnosis followed after the former midfielder fell ill while on a flight to link up with his Chipolopolo teammates in the international break last month and spent a period in hospital in Mali. He returned to England to undergo further cardiac tests and has been advised to stop playing football.

Following his pre-mature retirement, Enock moved into coaching and was appointed as the coach of Brighton and Hove Academy at the start of this month.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Infant Mortality Rate Worrisome

“Heartless” Mnangagwa Terrorises Political Foes

Rampant Brutalisation Of Citizens Total Madness

What Is Geological Mapping In Mining ?

Duped Zimbabweans Go For Olinda

By A Correspondent- Several Zimbabweans who were duped by Olinda Chapel are petitioning the UK government to deport the UK-based Zimbabwean socialite for defrauding them.

These job seekers have come out complaining that Olinda charged them as much as 15 000 British Pounds for them to get a health care Certificate of Sponsorship (COS). UK Home office issues a COS free of charge to a person who would have found employment in Britain.

Some of the people charged these monies by Olinda are stranded in the UK after she failed to employ them.

Zimbabweans in the diaspora have been frustrated by Olinda’s fraudulent activities and now want to approach the UK government for her deportation.

In another case, Olinda is bullying other Zimbabwean socialites.

Below is a narration compiled from some of the socialites bullied by Olinda who allege saying:

It all started on the day Mai Titi got delayed at the airport as she jetted into the UK in mid-November 2022.

Felistas Murata complained about her life that she had been delayed by UK immigration while being grilled on her politics and criminal background. Her first gig was dragged as a result.

The venue was sabotaged due to complaints made to the property owners, who demanded an extra GBP5,000 saying this was because of objections raised and revelations that commotion might happen.

The organiser, Kay Cee requested GBP3,000 from socialite Olinda Chapel.
Halfway through the gig, the property owners returned the money, saying we noticed no commotion contrary to previous fears.

Olinda Chapel Nkomo went into the function and dished out a few hundred pounds to Mai Titi.

On the 2nd function, everything went well. On that day someone from Ladies Of The UK, walked in during an occasion when Mai Titi refused to greet Olinda Chapel.

A woman who was with LUK’s Flossy Kandodo said she does not want to see Olinda Chapel and Ketty Masomere.

There were screams against Flossy Kandodo.

On 21st December 2022, there was a birthday for Ketty. Kay Cee was there. Ketty Masomere was there, and Olinda started mocking her dress, saying it looked like a lace curtain.
On another occasion, the women began another fight, and Mai Titi’s former friend, Patricia Jeke, began mocking Ketty’s son. Olinda came out saying children are a no-go area.

A back-and-forth argument was triggered, which resulted in Olinda Chapel saying the function was hers, of which Mai Titi started asking, ‘which function?’

Olinda started saying it was her party, and further quarrels were triggered.

The women started fighting. Ketty started insulting Olinda’s mother, saying she didn’t educate her. Mai Titi sent an email laughing at Olinda.

Olinda, responding, screamed back saying: this is evidence that you are the one who sent Ketty. Mai Titi firing back said: Olinda, you have been after me all this while, and the courts in Zimbabwe said you shouldn’t do this. You came to my function and gave me GBP300, and now what do you want from me?

At the airport, it is you who told immigration people to deport me. At the first venue, it was you behind it, and at the 2nd function, it was you as well. At that juncture, someone then came up apologising to Mai Titi, saying, Olinda is the one behind all this; she sent us to sabotage you all this while. That is how all this commotion got triggered against Olinda Chapel.

The women who support Mai Titi are demanding that she apologises.

In December 2022, she says she spent GBP 1 million between Jan and Dec 2022. She says she has a lot of money.

All this is happening at a time when eyebrows have been raised over Olinda Chapel’s physical appearance, with some alleging she is now looking like a 65y old woman.

‘She is not looking well, and it seems the surgery was bad on her. Her explanation has been that she is too tired after landing from a foreign trip,’ one subscriber says.

Meanwhile, Olinda’s husband, Tytan’s mother, is in the UK and is currently stuck because she doesn’t have immigration papers. She is not allowed at Olinda Chapel’s home. To see her granddaughter, Tytan has to take the baby to a McDonald’s.

Another lady who phoned Ketty yesterday confirms the same thing Tytan has to go to a McDonald’s to see his mother.

THE STUDENTS’ VOTE: A vital cog in the fight for a new Zimbabwe.

By Boris T Muguti| Dear reader in this small piece of writing, Boris seeks to shed light on why and how students should participate in the upcoming harmonized election. The students’ vote played a fundamental role in electoral outcomes of many countries world-wide ,thus, Zimbabwean students should not shy away from elections because they have a crucial role to play. Students should be strategically positioned and actively involved in the national discourse .Students constitute a very huge chuck of the electorate hence their vote is very crucial in the 2023 harmonized election. Globally, students are known to be barometers of class consciousness hence apart from voting, students should as well help in spreading voter education across the country. Lastly, the student has a key role to protect and defend the vote. The United Party for National Development (UNDP) under the capable leadership of Hakainde Hichilema won the Zambian election in 2021 with a landslide victory claiming over 59% of the total vote. Hichilema’s victory sent waves across the globe as most political analysts doubted his capacity and probability to grab power from the then incumbent President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. His victory gave hope to opposition leaders across the African continent, the hope that it is possible to peacefully wipe away dictatorship and achieve a total change. However, it is of paramount importance to note that Hichilema’s victory did not come on a silver platter. All groups played their part to turn the dream for change in Zambia into a reality. Hence, if Zimbabweans genuinely seek to turn the dream for change into a reality everyone ought to play their full part. Students lie at the center of the matrix for change, they have to contribute immensely to the fight for change. The million dollar question remains, “Why fighting ?“. Leon Trosky says, “..students are in a permanent state of revolution because they are directly and indirectly affected by everything that happens in a nation” . Students are equally affected by the problems that the society faces at any time. Currently Zimbabwe is ensnared in a serious economic quagmire, students have been the major victims of this economic crisis. The economic crisis has led to massive unprecedented inequalities, thousands of students defer from their studies every year because of the current economic malfunctioning. Students’ campus life has become difficult under this economy, students cannot afford to get three decent meals per day. Thousands of graduates are unemployed, hence if students do not unite and fight for the transformation of Zimbabwe into a Democratic Developmental state they will also become victims of unemployment after graduating. Thus, students need change more than any group in the society. Students are struggling on securing a Work Related Learning placement. The girl child is getting laid in exchange for attachment, thousands of students are working like donkeys in various companies and organizations and some students even fail to secure a Work Related Learning placement. That is the nature of the Zimbabwean economy and the student is the major victim. A plethora of the parents and guardians that pay fees for students in institutions of higher learning are our dear brothers and sisters who are working tirelessly in the diaspora. These people are risking their lives in Dangerous countries like South Africa just to support their brothers and make sure that they finish their studies. Things are not well for them in the diaspora. In South Africa Zimbabweans have been attacked and murdered by South Africans in what is popularly known as Xenophobic attacks. The most recent case being that of Elvis Nyathi who was burnt by a violent mob in the streets of Diepsloot, North West of Johannesburg. These are very disturbing and worrisome reports. The student has a role to play in ensuring that Zimbabwe regains her integrity so that our brothers and sisters who are toiling in the diaspora come back home. The Zimbabwean political climate is unsafe for students to fully exercise their rights. The autocratic regime of Emmerson Mnangagwa has closed the democratic space in the country. Students are not allowed to associate themselves with political parties of their choice as stipulated in the supreme document of the land- the Zimbabwean constitution. ZANU-PF has been forcing students to rally behind it’s old horse Emmerson Mnangagwa busing them to his programs and ZANU-PF Youth League programs. However the truth of the matter remains that students are fed up with ZANU-PF and it’s machinations. They now need change. ZANU-PF has also made Zimbabwean politics very toxic through the use of crude violence, arbitrary arrests, abductions and torture of opposition party members and Human Rights Defenders. This toxicity is pushing away students from participating in the National discourse. Students do not believe in dirty politics, they believe in smart politics, the politics of ideas, democracy and good governance. As the election approaches, students should understand that a Zimbabwe in which politics of violence becomes a thing of the past will not come on a silver platter. They ought to get on board and play their part. Fellow students, I can go on and on talking about the reasons why the student must take part in the fight for a new Zimbabwe but I will not be able to exhaust them. They are infinite. HOW THE STUDENT SHOULD PARTICIPATE IN THE FIGHT FOR CHANGE.Zimbabwe is going for elections probably in July this year. The student has a number of ways to contribute to the fight for a new Zimbabwe. A Zimbabwe which is safe for every citizen, conducive for development and democratic. I noted three ways in which the student can contribute to the fight for change. “Each generation must out of relative obscurity, discover its mission, fulfill it or betray it”- Frantz Fanon. Fellow students, we have a generational mandate to usher in change in our lifetime.

  1. The biggest step is registering to vote. This is a giant step towards wining Zimbabwe for change because if one is not a registered voter he or she will not be eligible to vote when the election comes. Hence students should register to vote in numbers and vote for change. N.B the students vote can play a very crucial role in burying the dictator.
  2. As barometers of class consciousness, students have a role to educate the society, voter apathy should not be an issue among students. Instead , students should participate in fighting voter apathy through spreading voter education. Students should penetrate communities and enlighten the society on why voting is important. ZANU-PF has been spreading too much propaganda in rural areas hence the student has a fundamental role to counter such. Most importantly ,the student must , without fear or favor, equivocation or ambiguity encourage the masses to support the fight for a new Zimbabwe.
  3. Averagely , students are a young and energetic group of people ,hence in terms of protecting the vote students must be at the forefront. The movement must give students opportunities to be poling agents in various polling stations across the country. This is because apart from being energetic, students are also exposed to modern technology hence this will make it difficult for the predator to crank his rigging machinery.
If we all unite for a common reason, the dream for a new Zimbabwe will definitely become a reality. The hopes of millions of Zimbabweans will be fulfilled. All forces that believe in this dream should at this very important moment in the history of our country, set aside their differences and fight dictatorship as a United Front.

Fellow students, it is our time and turn to champion the fight. Let’s go!

ZEC’s Draft Delimitation Report exposes CCC and gift ZanuPF political lifeline

By Innocent Ndorikanda| Even though ZanuPF and CCC, the top political parties in Zimbabwe, agree that the draft delimitation report was made in trifle regard of the law as has since been exposed by the parliamentary analysis report, resultantly making ZEC a roo loose on the top of the paddock , the two political outfits’ fears and fortunes will never converge.

If one were to ask about the timing of the draft delimitation report they, probably, would have received two divergent responses from either Zanu PF or CCC.

Through the prisms of Zanu PF
Certainly for ZanuPF the draft report was tabled a day after the fair. It is too little too late in that it goes to unsettle the known figures and trigonometrics relating to how the revolutionary party would claim scalps in the beckoning plebscite . It is an inconvinience to say the least. Zanu PF has done its homework basing on its structural character as it has always employed a cell based campaign and support mobilasation programme. For ZanuPF, known personalities with clear terms of references have been on the ground doing duty and feeding back on the possible outcomes but the report has since collapsed bounderies and the status quo. It is not in the interest of the ruling party to have a reconfigured terrain to trudge along the last lap into the elections for the very obvious reasons .

What the report means to CCC*?

So much any easy attempt to venture into being a truchman for what the report imply to CCC for the very reason that the part stands for nothing meaningful under the sun except that it begrudges the ruling party in every respect. Consequently the report means nothing, yes nothing at all. Its timing is a hair past the freckle. What would it mean to a party without established and known structures that delimitation has upstaged the existing political structures ?…Nothing! I repeat nothing at all. It does not matter in the practice and science of politics but, as is their norm , it has to be criticised in parroting choruses .

A little bit bread but no cheese**

In Britian there is a passarine bird called the Yellowhammer which in America is known as the Northen Flicker , a member of the woodperker . It makes sounds by hamming a known sound which the British call ” a little bit bread but no cheese” . In Zimbabwe , on the other hand, a related image about the Yellowhammer is painted by a political grouping that has no structural organisation but relies for its existence on protesting on everything and anything although without substantial reasons . They emphasise on the “but no cheese” melody – this is how the yellow story is told. Consider this , the Yellowhammer is yellow in its colour and it sings all day about having “bread without cheese.” Comparatively the CCC party ( the yellow movement ) does not see the good in anything that the government does. It sees the bread but complains about the lack of cheese . One wonders forever that if half loaf was better than no bread how about a whole bread but without cheese ? CCC is always fault finding yet bereft of solutions .In the last weeks they have joined forces with ZanuPF in the criticism of the Draft delimitation report. Their impugn on the draft report is as per their tradition and serves no political purpose. They have attacked the report for its legal inadquacies without giving attention to political advantages or anything related. Ofcause the report infracts the law in a number of ways but for ZanuPF the issue is more than being legalistic. It is about political advantages too . CCC are working to drown and trounce their long held position that ZEC is a ZanuPF troll.
_
Does ZEC manipulate the vote*

The opposition , particularly characters in the CCC party have given,as an excuse for failing to beat ZanuPF in elections , the reason of ZEC rigging on behalf of ZanuPF. Despite having made these allegations without profering concrete evidence , they have had some of the gullible citizens beliving their narrative but that is fast going into dusk if events of previous weeks are anything to go by . Questions have now arisen that if ZEC is really captured by ZANUPF why did it produce a report considered to be adverse to the interests of the ruling party. ZANUPF has since initiated legal proceedings aimed at nullifying the the draft report by ZEC. Unconfirmed reports, also, are that ZEC’s report sent chills down the spine of ZANUPF but this does not assist CCC in anyway, rather it absolves the ruling party from acting in shameful union with the election commision to steal the election. The debacle about the report has let loose the imaginary nexus between ZEC and ZANUPF.
Although CCC sought to discredit ZEC by attacking the report they have done more to show that ZEC makes its own mistakes without manipulation from ZANU PF. Now that both ZANUPF and CCC went at loggerheads with ZEC on the delimitation report what does CCC stand to benefit politically? . For ZANUPF , it is a chicken in every pot in that the report itself would disturb its campaign strategy and therefore discrediting it would distance the ruling party from the perception that there is an evil intercourse between it and ZEC. For CCC on the other hand ,it was a bridge too far to attack the legality of the report without giving a thought about political implications . The review by the parliamentary commitee proved to be both a bane and a boon . A bane for CCC and a boon for ZANUPF. It remains to be seen what the general elections hold but judging from tactical moves in the offing , ZANUPF is much oiled than CCC .

Stop Abusing Power, President Chamisa Tells Mnangagwa

Tinashe Sambiri|CCC leader President Nelson Chamisa says the persecution of citizens indicates Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa is desperate to cling to power.

Abuse of power by Mr Mnangagwa is unacceptable, according to President Chamisa.

“THE LAST KICKS…

This abuse of power and violation of the law is unacceptable as riot police arrest our Change Champions, Hon Chibaya MP & 24 others at Budiriro MP’s house.

We will defeat all these terror tactics.

Oppression is temporary and falling. Zimbabwe shall soon be free,” said President Chamisa in a brief statement on Saturday.

Roman Catholic Church Denounces Political Violence

Tinashe Sambiri|Church leaders have denounced the harassment of the elderly by Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration.

The Citizens Coalition for Change has hailed the church’s stance on political violence.

The Roman Catholic church has described political violence as barbaric and primitive.

“The Church has spoken with clarity and precision.

Say no to State sponsored violence.

The Catholic Church through the Zimbabwe Catholics Bishops’ Conference has issued a statement condemning the barbaric act of violence against the elderly members of our party in Murehwa.

Thank you for speaking on the side of truth justice,” CCC said in a statement.

Muvhevhi Successfully Escapes Army And Police

The ZRP has intensified the manhunt for Jaison Muvhevhi who allegedly shot and killed three people in Hwedza on Friday.
Muvhevhi, who is a former Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer shot and killed a “prophet” from an apostolic sect church before fatally shooting a senior police officer and seriously injured another, who had come to attend to the scene.

He allegedly shot and killed another person at a nearby shopping centre.

The officer who was injured is said to be in a critical condition and is admitted at a local hospital.

As investigations and a hunt for him continues, police yesterday located him in Chiduku area near Rusape, where it is alleged, a fierce shoot out ensued.

It is alleged during the intense exchange of gunfire, Muvhevhi felt the heat and abandoned his Toyota Allion vehicle and escaped on foot.

He is alleged to have fled into the nearby mountain and left a gun in the vehicle.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the hunt for the suspect is ongoing.

“He is not yet arrested. The suspect fled and left his vehicle and a gun he had taken from the officers. He was located in Chiduku. It is not true that he has been arrested.”- state media

A Level Student Dies From Snake Bite

A form 6 learner at Rushinga High School in Mashonaland Central, died within 30 minutes of being bitten by a snake, in a classroom on Thursday afternoon.

Melody Chiputura (17) had returned to the classroom from afternoon sports together with other learners to wind off the day, when the snake, a Black Mamba struck her on the thigh.

Although the snake was immediately killed by some learners, Melody died on her way to hospital, before a doctor could attend to her.

She was buried on Saturday at Kanyemba village in Rushinga, leaving a shell-shocked community and scores of traumatised school mates.

Melody’s father, Mr Joseph Chiputura, who is also, councillor for Ward 13 in Rushinga said he arrived at Rushinga Clinic, where Melody was rushed to 20 minutes after the incident.

“We received a call 10 minutes after she was bitten. When we arrived at the clinic it was too late. This is hard to accept and it is painful. I don’t understand how a snake can get into a classroom and bite my daughter.

“My daughter had great potential and she loved going to school. She had great hopes pinned on education and we had to make sure we provided everything she needed. She was doing History, Psychology and Religious Studies and her dream was to become a psychologist,” he said.

Black Mambas are sleek, fast, nervous, lethally venomous, and when they feel threatened, they are highly aggressive. Growing up to 3 metres ordinarily, and injecting in one bite, venom enough to kill six adults, the black mamba is widely considered the world’s deadliest snake. Most of its victims die within 20 minutes of being bitten.

They get their name not from their skin colour, which tends to be olive to grey, but rather from the blue-black colour of the inside of their mouth, which they display when threatened.

Rushinga High School head Mr Christopher Murenga said, “It was on Thursday and all learners went for sporting activities as per the school timetable. At around 3.50 pm the learners returned to their classroom as they prepared to leave for the day.

“She sat on her usual desk, the third desk to the wall, and two desks in front of her were occupied by her classmates. Immediately she screamed, saying something had bitten her.

“The learners discovered the snake and everyone panicked with some jumping out through windows. Some of the boys took Melody outside and started calling for help.”

Mr Murenga said within five minutes they managed to rush Melody to Rushinga Clinic while contacting her parents.

“Her parents arrived within 20 minutes in the company of someone with traditional herbs.

“At the same time we contacted Chimhanda Hospital and the doctor advised us to bring Melody and the snake which had already been killed by learners,” he said.

“She died on the way to the hospital. We are in shock we don’t understand where this snake came from. The classroom block is far away from suspected snake habitats.

“This is unexplainable. The psychological unit will be at school today to talk to our learners. We also summoned the counselling and guidance teachers to talk to Form Six students who witnessed the incident.

“She was obedient and well-mannered. During career guidance events she assisted with cooking and catering. We have lost an intelligent girl whom we were sure would pass her Advanced Level,” said the school head.

Deputy provincial education director, Dr Themba Mangwiro who attended the burial and visited the school said there was no tall grass around the school and the area leading to the classroom is clear.

“The information we gathered is that the snake was spotted close to a mountain by a villager. It is reported that the snake crossed the highway after someone attacked it.

“We suspect that since the learners were on the grounds doing sports the snake entered the classroom because it was quiet.

“All necessary assistance was rendered and she died on her way to Chimhanda Hospital. This is a unique case, but we advise school heads to ensure they cut the grass around their schools.

“This incident has made us realise that we need to improve disaster risk management which is not given enough attention in schools. We never thought such incidents can happen in a classroom.

“We need to teach our children that snakes don’t want to be disturbed. We heard that this snake wanted to strike another child,” he said. Herald

Guardiola Unfazed By Manchester Derby Defeat

Man City boss Pep Guardiola claimed he doesn’t care about the Premier League after seeing his team beaten 2-1 by Man Utd on Saturday.

City led through Jack Grealish’s 60th-minute header before United snatched a controversial equaliser 18 minutes later courtesy of Bruno Fernandes’ effort.

Marcus Rashford tapped home in the 82nd minute to seal the Red Devils’ home victory.

The result pushed the Blues five points behind leaders Arsenal, hurting the defending champions’ hopes of retaining their title.

“I don’t care about the Premier League and Carabao Cup. We cannot win. We won [them] a lot. It’s not a problem. The problem is we perform like we have done. Always we focus on that,” he told BT Sport.

“So, Carabao Cup we are out. It doesn’t matter. We perform how we perform, we are how we are. Today, we performed. And after we win, we win at another club.”

Speaking on Fernandes’ controversial equaliser, Guardiola slammed the decision to allow the goal, saying: “Marcus Rashford is offside, Bruno Fernandes is not. Rashford distracted our keeper and centre defenders.

“It is what it is. We know where we play. It is difficult for the referees in these stadiums.”

The strike came in the 78th minute after Casemiro played a through ball up the pitch for Rashford, who started the run in an offside position.

The English forward chased after the ball for some metres but did not touch it, with the pass eventually dropping to Fernandes, who netted from the edge of the box.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

We Were Outclassed- Klopp

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp has made an open admission after his side’s 3-0 humiliation at Brighton.

The Reds suffered their second successive league game after Solly March’s brace and a late Danny Welbeck effort handed the hosts the three points.

The result saw Klopp’s charges drop to eighth position on the EPL table.

Speaking after the match, the gaffer admitted he was frustrated with what he feels may be the “worst game” of his Liverpool tenure.

“Doing better than today should be easy because this is a really low point,” he said.

“I cannot remember a worse game. Maybe there was one, but today was a low point.

“We have to make big steps. From this game today, we can pick absolutely nothing [to work on] apart from the things which didn’t work.”

He added: “Congratulations to Brighton, played a super game against a bad opponent,” he added.

“We were really not good today. We tried to help the boys with a slightly different formation. The organisation was completely wrong.

“It was too easy. A very deserved defeat and a well-deserved win for Brighton.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Hot Lady Mesmerises S*x Lovers

SHE started being a ƨǝx worker five years ago.

And today, the well-endowed 35-year-old from Nyanga now services both men and women.

She also services her old clients on credit.

“I have loyal clients that I service on credit because I know they will never run away with my money,” said the woman.

But clients cannot just show up and expect to be given services on credit.

They discuss it on the phone before they go to her place.

“My clients and I have an understanding and we respect each other.

None of them come knowing they don’t have money,” she said.

The woman said servicing both genders was not a problem for her.

“At first, I was offering my services to men only.

But one day, I received a message from a woman who asked if I also serviced them.

I didn’t hesitate and said yes,” she said.

She said she knew exactly what the woman needed and she didn’t disappoint.

“If you don’t know how to do something, just ask ƨǝx workers Google.

You will get all the answers there.”

The woman then started to service both mn and womǝn – as long as they were 18 yǝars and older.

She said sometimes she got so busy that clients had to wait outside for their turn.

She urged people to stop criticising others.

“Let’s respect other people’s hustles.

If you were fortunate enough to get a decent job, that doesn’t mean you must look down on other people’s hustle,” she said.

Meanwhile, old ƨǝx workers on the streets of Bulawayo claim new faces are making it difficult for them to get clients.

They have been working in the field as ƨǝx workers for years and attracted many clients.

But this has all changed, thanks to a group of new ƨǝx workers on the streets.

And now it’s a case of ƨǝx wars! The old ƨǝx workers said the new faces are making it difficult for them to get clients.

And although the two groups, who are working on 11th Avenue between Robert Mugabe Way and Samuel Parirenyatwa Streets as well as between Masotsha Ndlovu and Third Avenues have not fought physically, there is tension between them.

“We are struggling to make ends meet.

You can stand here the whole day without being picked up.

We are seeing new faces increase every day and it’s hard.

We can’t fight them because they will tell us they also have rights,” said one of the old ƨǝx workers, who called herself ‘Candy’ (real name Nomsa Mlotshwa).

The new ƨǝx workers said unemployment pushed them into doing this work.

But one of the new ƨǝx workers told Sunday News they were not making more money.

“Tuesdays are the worst.”

She said that she became jobless because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I used to work at a grocery shop in the western suburbs, and I was retrenched when the owner began struggling to make a profit and pay my wages,” she said.

The woman, who claims she now lives at an informal settlement popularly known as Ngozi Mine, said she used to see other women sell their bodies and decided to give it a try.

“I would not be here if I had a choice.

I have kids to maintain and the little I make here helps to keep hunger at bay,” she said.

The new ƨǝx workers said they were not going anywhere.

“We are sorry to invade the territory, but we have to survive,” said another new ƨǝx worker.

Heavy Rains Destroy Infrastructure, Crops

SIX people were killed by the recent heavy rains while a lot of infrastructure was damaged, and some destroyed, in various parts of the country.

Crops and livestock were also badly affected by the heavy rains which fell from last Friday to Sunday.

The deaths of people and damage to infrastructure was mainly due to floods, lightning, falling trees and collapse of infrastructure such as schools.

In a statement yesterday, Ministry of Local Government and Public Works spokesperson, Mr Gabriel Masvora, said while the rains that had been forecast by the Meteorological Services Department brought good prospects of crop yields, they had claimed lives and property.

“The rains were experienced in most parts of the country as forecasted by the Meteorological Services Department (MSD), thus raising hopes for a better agricultural season,” said Mr Masvora.

“However, the rains left a trail of destruction in Manicaland, Masvingo, Matabeleland North and South, Mashonaland Central and the Midlands.

“These provinces recorded incidents of drowning, deaths of persons and livestock due to lightning, destruction of infrastructure such as schools, houses, roads and bridges and destruction of crops.

“A total of six deaths were recorded during the period in question. In Mazowe District, a Headmistress died on the spot after a tree fell on a vehicle she was seated in.”

Mr Masvora said of the six who died, two had drowned upon attempting to cross flooded rivers in Gwanda and Mutasa districts, while two were struck by lightning in Chivi, with the other succumbing to injuries sustained after a tree fell in Mazowe.

The other victim died in Gokwe South district after a house collapsed due to heavy rains.

“It is worrisome that a number of schools were damaged by the rains and strong winds at a time when the first term of 2023 was starting.

“A number of houses were also affected by flooding particularly in areas with poor drainage and low lying areas,” Mr Masvora said.

Outlining the damage across the country, Mr Masvora said Muparuri Primary school in Ward 7, Zaka district and Zihwa School in Chivi had their roofs for classroom blocks blown off due to strong winds associated with the rains while a classroom block was damaged at St Martins, Chivi.

At least three houses had their roofs blown off by strong winds in Mwenezi and Chivi districts with a private shop in Chivi damaged as well. In Mbire district, Mashonaland Central province, more than 150 ha of maize, sorghum, cowpeas were destroyed by floods while 20 A 1 farmers lost a combined 10 ha of tobacco.

Four beasts were struck by lightning in Chipinge and Mutare rural, in Manicaland Province.

Nineteen houses were totally damaged while 29 had their roofs blown off or partially blown off by strong winds. Twenty-two schools experienced varying destruction across the country.

“The public is advised to stay informed about the weather through daily forecasts, 10-day bulletins and seasonal forecast updates via the official Meteorological Services Department platforms.

“The Department of Civil Protection is advising citizens not to relax despite the termination of the alert issued recently,” Mr Masvora said.

Mdhluli said Mthembu, and his mechanic, were being dropped off by a friend at the yard when three armed men suddenly appeared.

“The suspects fired multiple shots at the councillor, also fatally shooting the friend in the bakkie, as well as the mechanic. The suspects then fled the scene,” he said.

Klopp Speaks On Drubbing At Brighton

STUDENTS’ VOTE: A Vital Cog In Fighting For A new Zimbabwe.

By Boris T Muguti-Dear reader, in this small piece of writing, Boris seeks to shed light on why and how students should participate in the 2023 harmonized general election.

The students’ vote played a fundamental role in the electoral outcomes of many countries worldwide; thus, Zimbabwean students should not shy away from elections because they have a crucial role to play. Students should be strategically positioned and actively involved in the national discourse. Students constitute a massive chuck of the electorate; hence their vote is crucial in the 2023 harmonized election. Globally, students are known to be barometers of class consciousness; apart from voting, students should also help spread voter education across the country. Lastly, the student is crucial in protecting and defending the vote.

The United Party for National Development (UNDP), under the capable leadership of Hakainde Hichilema, won the Zambian election in 2021 with a landslide victory claiming over 59% of the total vote. Hichilema’s victory sent waves across the globe as most political analysts doubted his capacity and probability to grab power from the then-incumbent President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. His victory gave hope to opposition leaders across the African continent, the hope that it is possible to wipe away dictatorship and achieve total change peacefully. However, it is paramount to note that Hichilema’s victory did not come on a silver platter. All groups played their part to turn the dream of change in Zambia into a reality. Hence, if Zimbabweans genuinely seek to turn the vision for change into existence, everyone should play their part.

Students lie at the centre of the matrix for change and must contribute immensely to the fight for change. The million-dollar question remains, “Why fighting ?“. Leon Trotsky says, “..students are in a permanent state of revolution because they are directly and indirectly affected by everything that happens in a nation”. Students are equally affected by the problems that society faces at any time. Currently, Zimbabwe is ensnared in a serious economic quagmire, and students have been the major victims of this economic crisis. The economic crisis has led to massive, unprecedented inequalities, and thousands of students defer their studies yearly because of the current economic malfunction. Students’ campus life has become difficult in this economy; students cannot afford to get three decent meals per day. Thousands of graduates are unemployed; hence if students do not unite and fight for the transformation of Zimbabwe into a Democratic Developmental state they will also become victims of unemployment after graduating. Thus, students need to change more than any group in society.

Students need help securing a Work Related Learning placement. The girl child is getting laid in exchange for attachment, thousands of students are working like donkeys in various companies and organizations and some students even fail to secure a Work Related Learning placement. That is the nature of the Zimbabwean economy and the student is the major victim.

A plethora of parents and guardians who pay fees for students in institutions of higher learning are our dear brothers and sisters working tirelessly in the diaspora. These people are risking their lives in Dangerous countries like South Africa to support their brothers and ensure they finish their studies. Things are not well for them in the diaspora. In South, Africa Zimbabweans have been attacked and murdered by South Africans in what is popularly known as Xenophobic attacks. The most recent case is that of Elvis Nyathi, who was burnt by a violent mob in the streets of Diepsloot, North West of Johannesburg. These are very disturbing and worrisome reports. The student has a role in ensuring that Zimbabwe regains her integrity so that our brothers and sisters who are toiling in the diaspora come back home.

The Zimbabwean political climate is unsafe for students to exercise their rights fully.

HOW THE STUDENT SHOULD PARTICIPATE IN THE FIGHT FOR CHANGE.
Zimbabwe is going for elections probably in July this year.

Fellow students, we have a generational mandate to usher in a change in our lifetime.

  1. The biggest step is registering to vote. This is a giant step towards winning Zimbabwe for change because if one is not a registered voter, he or she will not be eligible to vote when the election comes. Hence students should register to vote in numbers and vote for change. N.B, the students’ vote can play a crucial role in burying the dictator.
  2. As barometers of class consciousness, students have a role in educating society, and voter apathy should not be an issue among students. Instead, students should participate in fighting voter apathy by spreading voter education. Students should penetrate communities and enlighten society on why voting is important. ZANU-PF has been spreading too much propaganda in rural areas; hence the student has a fundamental role in countering such. Most importantly, the student must encourage the masses to support the fight for a new Zimbabwe without fear or favour, equivocation or ambiguity.
  3. On Averagely, students are a young and energetic group of people; hence in terms of protecting the vote, students must be at the forefront. The movement must allow students to be polling agents in various polling stations across the country. This is because, apart from being energetic, students are also exposed to modern technology; hence this will make it difficult for the predator to crank his rigging machinery.
If we all unite for a common reason, the dream of a new Zimbabwe will become a reality. The hopes of millions of Zimbabweans will be fulfilled. All forces that believe in this dream should at this significant moment in the history of our country, set aside their differences and fight dictatorship as a United Front.

Fellow students, it is our time and turn to champion the fight. Let’s go!

No Peace For Second Wife

By A Correspondent- A fight between two women married to the same man spilled into court yesterday with the junior wife seeking a protection order against the older wife.

The second wife, Plaxedes Chisenga, applied for a peace order against Erina Sagonde at the Harare Civil Court.

Presiding magistrate Tamara Chibindi granted the protection order.

Plaxedes said she was suffering emotional and physical abuse at the hands of Erina.

She told the court that Erina was in the habit of going to her house and workplace where she insults and brands her a pr0stitutǝ in public.

Digital Violence Haunts Political Parties

By A Correspondent- Political parties in Midlands province have been urged to safeguard people against cyber bullying as violence has gone digital.

The call was made by Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association director Cornelia Selipiwe during an inter-parties engagement meeting hosted by the 4-H Zimbabwe organisation in Gweru.

Selipiwe said it was saddening to note how social media has been weaponized to tarnish the image of other political players.

“Let me start by saying youths have access to power because they are the ones who also take part in choosing their leaders. If they take that same power, they can just use it to be in leadership positions I am sure.

“Violence has gone digital, young people have resorted to the use of Twitter Spaces , Facebook and Whatsapp to speak issues which divide people, the nation and some of the messages have been generated by the political and social media influencers.

“We need to be on guard against the use of social media to instigate violence. Look at how pictures of our country’s leadership our President (Emmerson Mnangagwa), Nelson Chamisa’s faces are cartooned, look how Mwonzora’s pictures are edited. We need to guard against that and cultivate the spirit of tolerance among young people,” he added.

Zanu PF Midlands Youth Chairperson Ernest Dzoro said as all political leaders were preaching peace there was need for young people to act accordingly.

“I am happy our political leaders are at the fore front of preaching peace, my own President Emmerson Mnangagwa is among the leaders doing so. Let’s also act accordingly and do as our leaders say.

“Violence is down here at the grass roots, as leaders we don’t fight because above everything we have learnt that we are Zimbabweans. Why then do you (the youths) indulge in violence while your leaders are united? It’s time we change our behaviour together as youths,” he said.

MDC-T Midlands Youth Leader Albert Chadoka said there was need for party leaders to safe guard cyber platforms against weaponization for wrong reasons.

“Indeed the issue of inclusivity on Persons with Disabilities is key at our MDC-T political party. We greatly consider that, now that we have also heard the concerns as political parties, we have agreed to go back and push so that your safety is guaranteed as you venture into political party activities.

“Also let me put our national leaders to task. Our parties must look at the issues of social media with urgency, we don’t want a scenario where cyber bullying ruins our society. We are a people together despite belonging to different political parties. We now have a law which governs use of digital spaces and we appeal that it be used to protect ordinary innocent citizens against digital violence,” Chadoka said.

The engagement was attended by youth leaders from eight political parties including Zanu PF, Labour Economists and African Democrats (LEAD), Zimbabwe Economic Freedom Fighters (ZEFF), Front for Economic Emancipation Zimbabwe (FEEZ), National Constitutional Assembly (NCA), MDC-T and Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).

Man In Soup For Publicising Wife’s HIV Status

By A Correspondent- A Harare woman yesterday applied for a protection order against her husband, accusing him of selling her property whenever he is drunk.

Tariro Konde alleged that her husband, Tendai Guravhezha, verbally abuses her in front of their neighbours and sells her property.

Magistrate Tamara Chibindi granted the protection order by consent.

Tariro also said her husband insults her over her HIV status.

“He uses hurtful language to insult me because of my status. I am always hurt because he has made it a habit to insult me over my HIV status.

“He married me when I was HIV positive, but I was not aware of it,” she said.

She said her husband is a drunkard. “Whenever he is drunk, he insults me and sells my property. Every time I ask for money to take care of our child, he starts insulting me and more often we end up fighting,” said Tariro.

Tendai did not oppose the application, but said his wife usually uses rude language when responding to him.

“I do not oppose the order, but she usually answers me in a rude manner which leads to the misunderstandings,” he said.

Magistrate Chibindi ordered Tendai not to insult or harass his wife.

Court Upholds Khama’s Arrest Warrant

By A Correspondent- A Botswana court on Friday dismissed an application by former President Ian Khama to have an arrest warrant against him struck down.

The warrant was issued by a regional magistrate in late December after Khama, who is believed to be living in South Africa since November 2021, failed to turn up in court to answer charges laid against him in April.

The charges include unlawful possession of a firearm, receiving stolen property and procuring the registration of a firearm by false pretence among others.

The high court in Gaborone ruled that Khama’s application failed to meet the requirements for the warrant to be set aside or delayed, and said he also failed to justify why the matter should be treated as urgent.

His lawyer said Khama has not yet made a decision on appealing the judgement.

Khama has missed court appearances since he was charged in April, saying he feared for his life in Botswana.

He has been in a protracted feud with his successor President Mokgweetsi Masisi which resulted in him quitting the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) in 2019.

Undocumented Zimbos In SA Struggle To Send Kids To School

By A Correspondent- t is 10:00, and 9-year-old Michael is begging at a set of traffic lights in Johannesburg. Most children his age are back at school after the holidays. But Michael is undocumented.

He has not been in school since 2021, when he used to attend a private school. His family could not afford to keep him there, and the school also gave him notice that he should provide some documentation if he wanted to continue classes, GroundUp reported.

His two siblings and their mother, a widow, sometimes join Michael at the traffic lights to beg from motorists. They usually spread out to increase their chances of getting something.

Michael and one of his sisters were born in South Africa. The younger one was born in Zimbabwe and came to South Africa as a baby. The older sibling used to attend school but the younger one has never been to school.

I want to be in school, but my mother says we have no papers. Standing at the robots is boring, but we have no choice because we need food,” said Michael.

Michael’s mother said:

Not being able to send my children to school is heartbreaking. My children have neither Zimbabwean nor South African papers because we have been in Johannesburg for a long time.

The online school placement system requires documents for registration, so parents go to schools in person, door to door, only to be turned away. Michael’s mother tried several public schools, but they insisted she provide documents.

Some private schools will take undocumented children, but charge fees ranging from R500 to R1 500 a month. Most undocumented immigrant parents do not have a sufficient or stable enough income to cover this.

Smangaliso, from Bulawayo in Zimbabwe but originally from Mozambique, only acquired Zimbabwean citizenship a few years ago. She brought her grandchildren, aged 9 and 11, to Johannesburg three years ago after their father died. She has not found a public school that is prepared to take them without documents.

“It’s not easy back home in Bulawayo. At least here (Johannesburg) I can buy food with the money I make from selling sweets… My grandchildren need an education… I don’t know what to do,” she said.

Rudo, a secretary by profession, lost her job because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Her children have been at home for the past year because she cannot afford the R950 a month she was paying to keep them in a private school.

She said:

South Africa is the only home they know. All I want is for them to go to school but it is not as easy as that.

Zimbabwe Isolated Women in South Africa (Ziwisa) has compiled a database of children living in the inner-city of Johannesburg who are in this predicament.

“There are close to 1 000 migrant children from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Congo and Lesotho [who] we have registered so far, who are not going to school due to lack of documentation,” said Ethel Musonza from Ziwisa.

“While some [children] might be lucky enough to be enrolled into primary school, it’s difficult to get placed in high schools,” she said.

The matric certificates of immigrant children are missing the 13-digit South African ID number, and their validity is often doubted.

“In Johannesburg, there are a number of private schools offering the University of Cambridge high school system to allow migrant children to have usable certificates, but such schools are expensive,” said Musonza.

Cambridge system matric certificates do not require South African ID numbers, and the system is generally favoured by many immigrants.

Ziwisa, in partnership with Bishop Paul Verryn of the Methodist Church in Johannesburg, is fundraising for a school for immigrant children.

“The project will cater for all children, including those who are undocumented,” Verryn said. He added that the school would have to charge a small fee.

“We will also offer the University of Cambridge syllabus to cater for migrant children with no ID numbers or birth certificates. All children have the right to attend school.

“The Albert school, which was operating on the premises of the Methodist Church, catered for only Zimbabweans who were struggling with school placement, but has now officially been closed. Should a new school be opened, a difference will be made in the lives of needy children,” said Verryn.

Among the witnesses called were Mukwirimba’s personal assistant, Privilege Zhou, and her husband Crispen Zhou.

Police spokesperson for Bulawayo Province Inspector Abednico Ncube told Sunday News that the brothers were alone at their home in Methodist Village when the incident occurred.

We received a report of murder where siblings Nkosilathi and Blessing Moyo are said to have had a scuffle over a wheelbarrow belonging to Nkosilathi that Blessing is alleged to have sold. The result was that Nkosilathi struck his younger brother with an axe on the head and forehead. He died on the spot,” said Insp Ncube.

The incident happened when their 64-year-old father was away herding cattle. When the father returned home he found Blessing in a sitting position on the sofa motionless and bleeding from the back of the head and forehead.

Friday The 13th Wedza Police Killer Skips To Mozambique

By- The Police have said they were still hunting a CID member Jaison Muvhevhi who shot and killed three people in Wedza, including a police officer, on Friday.

Police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they had recovered the Toyota Allion vehicle dumped by Muvhevhi in the Chiduku area of Rusape.

He said they also recovered an FN rifle the suspect had taken from the police officer he killed in Wedza.

ZBC reports that Assistant Commissioner Nyathi dismissed as false messages circulating on social media that Muvhevhi had been arrested in Chipinge while trying to cross into Mozambique.
Muvhevhi is alleged to have killed a church leader at an apostolic sect shrine in Wedza on Friday before turning the gun on a police officer who was trying to arrest him and another individual identified as a barman at Mukamba Business Centre.
He dumped his vehicle in the Chiduku area of Rusape, together with the FN rifle and is now armed with a service pistol which he also took from the police officer he injured while resisting arrest, in addition to his personal pistol.

On ZIMSEC Grade Inflation: A Disgraceful and Shameful National Cancer

By Arthur G.O. Mutambara| I have seen press reports about this year’s Ordinary Level and Advanced Level Examination results all over the place. I want to congratulate all the students, schools and teachers who excelled. Makorokoto makuru (Congratulations)!!

However, on the ZIMSEC Advanced Level Examination results, there is a slight problem of grade inflation – a pernicious and ruinous national cancer. How do you get one school getting 79 students with 15 points (or more) out of 140 candidates? This is 56% of the students getting the same top examination outcome. This is shameless grade inflation. Throughout the country, some schools have such results as 37, 25 or such large numbers of 15-pointers each. While these achievements must be celebrated and the students applauded, there is a problem.

How do you differentiate these multitudes of 15-pointer kids? The very top students (the superstars) are now hidden and buried among the 79, 37 and 25, for example. You cannot tell who they are. How do you get them scholarships or secure places for them into top universities such as Oxford, Harvard or Cambridge, when there are a 1000 students with 15 points from Zimbabwe. It is meaningless. You probably have to give them another examination to distinguish and differentiate them.

The 2019 ZIMSEC Advanced Level Examination results do not follow a standard normal distribution curve. How do you get 56% of the students from one school obtaining the same top examination outcome? These results are a disservice to the best and brightest students. In fact, they are a disservice to all the students.

Grade inflation is not a good idea. I have received many requests from these students with 15 points or more from this year’s results, asking for opportunities at top universities across the world. While I congratulate the high achievers and I am excited for them, it is very tough to sell their outstanding results to great institutions outside Zimbabwe, because of the obvious and disgraceful grade inflation. Do you approach Oxford or Harvard with 1000 such 15-pointers from Zimbabwe? It is a joke.

Why do we say this? When you present 1000 students with 15 points from one country (obtained in one sitting) to a university like Oxford or Harvard, it is meaningless because the 1000 students are not differentiated. You cannot tell who is in the top 10 or 20 among the 1000 outstanding candidates. You put the top university in an invidious situation. They cannot admit them, and yet some of the 1000 students would definitely qualify to study in these top and globally competitive programmes. However, you do not know who they are. You might have to give the 1000 students another examination to rank them. This is the challenge that is presented by grade inflation.

ZIMSEC must sort out this mess.

For sure, getting 35 points or 25 points is an indicator of differentiation. However, the standard Advanced Level Examination is three subjects. So, attaining 15 points from 3 subjects (3As) becomes the ultimate and uniform measure of the highest excellence. Yes, you can say the 35-pointer has differentiated himself or herself. Agreed. However, taking more than three subjects is not the standard format of the Advanced Level Examination. Very few students do that. More importantly, when they do not take more than three subjects, that act/choice must not count against them in terms of excellence.

Now, how about the 1000 with three As (who only took three subjects) each? Are they all equal? How do top universities choose the best among these 1000 students? How do you differentiate these 1000? Surely some of them are superstars who qualify to enter Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard or Stanford. But we cannot tell who they are from the 1000. This is the challenge I am flagging which is occasioned by grade inflation.

Globally grade inflation is a well-known concept. There have been cases in African countries (e.g. Nigeria), the United States, and Europe. In the High School sector, the UK has been effectively grappling with it by having several private examination boards that compete, thus shaming and minimising the occurrence of this scourge.

In analysing the ZIMSEC outcomes, it is clear that certainly, our children are not getting too smart. That is not the issue. The problems are the standard of the examination, the marking systems and grading thereafter. It is a ZIMSEC problem. And no, the internet and its platforms such as Google or Wikipedia is not the issue. We just have to be creative, resourceful and imaginative examiners. Furthermore, our marking and grading must be sophisticated. Despite the advent of Google, proper exams can still be administered. Those who took Cambridge Advanced Level Examination in 2019 do not have this grade inflation problem.

Our challenge is that we have one national, incompetently state-run, examination body. We need to rethink, reimagine and re-invent ZIMSEC. The key leaders and professional of this institution must understand the meaning and impact of grade inflation. In the UK, as already indicated, they have several privately run examination bodies that compete and thus mitigate and manage the occurrence of grade inflation.

By the way, once they are admitted into top global universities, students from our great country, generally distinguish themselves. With the tremendous and world-renowned Zimbabwean work ethic and drive, they usually take care of business. Sometimes, getting into these top schools is now the problem, and not performance once admitted. I sit on the Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee. Getting the Rhodes Scholarship does NOT guarantee you a place at Oxford University. There is a separate application process into Oxford.

About five years ago, one of our two Rhodes Scholarship choices: A First Class Degree in Computer Science from UZ could not get a place at Oxford University! They asked the selected Rhodes Scholar to spend a year at the lower-ranked Brookes University (next door to Oxford) for a year, and prove himself first, then apply again to the University of Oxford.

Of course, the young man was shuttered and humiliated. But he braved it, spent the year at Brookes, and eventually gained entrance into the University of Oxford. He is now a proud Oxonian. But can you imagine the ordeal and psychological trauma that the young man, had to go through? Was it necessary?

Now, do you know why the University of Oxford did this to our Rhodes Scholar? Because UZ gave a PhD to Grace Mugabe after three months, Oxford basically discounted the young man’s First Class to a Third!

These are the things we do to undermine our superstar students!

We ought to stop.

The ZIMSEC grade inflation is one step too far. We must protect the brand, opportunities and possibilities of all our students – the country’s future human capital – starting from Primary School, through High School, right up to Tertiary Education.

In case some might think that the Advanced Level Examination grade inflation will only affect entry into elite or Ivy League schools like Harvard and Oxford; to the contrary, the issue will also negatively impact fair admission into local universities. Any examination that says 56% are equally NUMBER ONE is meaningless. More importantly, such results are useless for university admission purposes. Forget Oxford and Harvard. Let us stay local. With these 1000 fifteen pointers, how are you going to decide who gets into UZ law or UZ Medicine? The 79 (15 pointers) kids from Pamushana and 15 pointers from one or two other schools can easily fill up those two programs. What will happen to other 15 pointers (from the 1000) who also want to be enrolled in the two courses at UZ? What reason will you give them for not qualifying into these two programs at UZ?

Let us make the numbers do some more talking. Out of 1000 fifteen pointers, how many qualify for a Law Degree at UZ? Probably 300. How many qualify for a Degree in Medicine at UZ, probably 200. Assuming UZ Law takes 80 a year and Medicine 70 a year, there is a potential problem. How do you objectively select the 80 and 70, out of the 300 and 200 respectively? Are we going to apply subjective ad hoc terms which are most likely to disadvantage the poor and the unconnected?

The same above analysis can be made for departments at any of the other national tertiary institutions, be it NUST, MSU or Africa University. It is not just a question of whether we can absorb all these qualified students into Zimbabwean tertiary institutions, but rather ensuring fair and scientific admission into these universities based on meaningful results. Hence, you can disregard any reference to elite or Ivy League Schools – Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, etc. – or any foreign interests for that matter. Grade inflation is bad for Zimbabwe, period. The case against grade inflation has nothing to do with trying to please elite or Ivy League Schools. Don’t hide behind cheap, primitive and unsophisticated decolonisation or anti-imperialism arguments. We have been independent for 40 years and running our own education system in those years. As free Zimbabweans – proud Africans – we have created this problem. We must solve it to please ourselves and nobody else.

We must think again.

For the record, we are not necessarily challenging the quality of education acquired or the capacity of the students produced. We have not reached that stage, yet. I am just emphasising differentiation of the product. The product (our students) is fairly solid and can compete globally. Lack of differentiation damages the brand and deny the product opportunities to excel and flourish in Zimbabwe and beyond our borders. No one should be suffocated or disparaged for doing well. Neither should we grade for available opportunities. We just want meaningful examination results that we can use for university admission and other developmental purposes.

Furthermore, it is essential to posit that what we are addressing here is neither a problem of sheer absorption capacity nor the challenge of too many qualified students. Not at all. While those could be secondary concerns, they are not the issues at play at all, in this conversation. This discussion is about meaningful and fair absorption within the country. It is about the effective interface with other jurisdictions academically. We need meaningful examination results, period. That there are too many or too few qualified students is a separate though essential conversation.

What is the way forward?

We need to rethink, re-engineer, re-imagine and redesign ZIMSEC. We need creative, resourceful and imaginative examiners, backed by sophistication in marking and grading. The lack of rigour and tenacity in both developing and grading the examinations are the key drivers of grade inflation. We need quality examiners who understand grade dynamics, all grounded in quality teaching and curriculum understanding. ZIMSEC must not tolerate inefficient and incompetent markers. Curriculum development, teaching and the examinations, thereafter, must be anchored in learners’ pursuit of competencies such as problem-solving, learning how to learn, mastering how to think, and blended learning; all rooted in a multidisciplinary approach to education. We need to rethink, reimagine, re-engineer and redesign ZIMSEC. We need meaningful examination results which we can effectively use as a country and which also allow us to interface with other jurisdictions meaningfully. We must eliminate any elements of direct or indirect political interference which compromise the quality of our education system and its products. There should be no place for scoring cheap political mileage by awarding inflated grades. This is ruinous and detrimental to our children. We must protect the brand, opportunities and impact of our education products – our priceless human capital. In doing so, we can pick up lessons from other jurisdictions that have addressed the grade inflation challenge. Zimbabwe can fix this scourge. However, we must first accept that it exists. A problem realised is a problem half-solved.

We must jealously guard the globally renowned quality and efficacy of our entire education system from Primary School to Tertiary Education. We must find ways of restoring institutional and individual integrity, pride in good work ethics, discipline and quality work across the entire education sector.

Sorting out the mess and rot at ZIMSEC – the disgraceful and shameful grade inflation – is a national imperative.

Yes, we can solve this challenge in pursuit of our national interest.
