Billiat Inspires Kaizer Chiefs To Convincing Win

Khama Billiat got all things done to help his Kaizer Chiefs to a convincing 3-0 win over Maritzburg United on Tuesday.

Billiat registered two assists in the victory which was Chiefs’ first of the season.

The 31-year-old threaded a through pass to Ashley Du Preez who took a first-time shot inside the box to open the scoring in the 4th minute.

He got involved in the third goal when he squared the ball to Mduduzi Shabalala who sealed the triumph with a tap-in the stoppage time.

Khama’s high presssing also forced the keeper to make a failed clearance and the ball fell into the path Keegan Dolly who found the back of the empty net from a distance for Chiefs’ second goal.- Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

About HIV/ AIDS

HIV/AIDS remains one of the world’s most significant public health challenges, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

As a result of recent advances in access to antiretroviral therapy (ART), HIV-positive people now live longer and healthier lives. In addition, it has been confirmed that ART prevents onward transmission of HIV.

An estimated 28.7 million people were receiving HIV treatment in 2021. Globally, 75% of the 38.4 million people living with HIV in 2021 were receiving ART.

Progress has also been made in preventing and eliminating mother-to-child transmission and keeping mothers alive. In 2021, 81% of all pregnant women living with HIV, or 1.1 million women, received antiretrovirals (ARVs).

WHO has released a set of normative guidelines and provides support to countries in formulating and implementing policies and programmes to improve and scale up HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services for all people in need.

This fact file provides current data on the disease, and ways to prevent and treat it.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infects cells of the immune system
Infection results in the progressive deterioration of the immune system, breaking down the body’s ability to fend off some infections and other diseases. AIDS (Acquired immune deficiency syndrome) refers to the most advanced stages of HIV infection, defined by the occurrence of any of more than 20 opportunistic infections or related cancers.

Access to preventive interventions remains limited in many low- and middle-income countries.

But progress has been made in some areas such as prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and keeping mothers alive. In 2021, 81% of all pregnant women living with HIV – 1.1 million women – received antiretrovirals worldwide. In 2015, Cuba was the first country declared by WHO as having eliminated mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis. By the end of 2021, 15 countries and territories were validated for eliminating mother-to-child HIV.

War Vets Issue Strong Warning Against Zanu PF Factionalists

By A Correspondent| War veterans in Mazowe district have issued a strong warning to Zanu PF members who are fanning factionalism in the district.

This came out during the district Heroes Day commemorations held at Nzvimbo Growth point on Monday.

Speaking at the event, Mazowe district war veterans chairman Ephanos Mudzimunyi said as custodians of the party, they will not tolerate those causing divisions.

“We fought for the liberation of the country and are custodians of the party. We want the party to be united and those who are causing divisions will not be tolerated,” Mudzimunyi said.

The divisions are a mirror reflection of the broader provincial factional fights in which two heavyweights, Mazowe DCC chairman Tafadzwa Musarara and current Mashonaland Central provincial chairman Kazembe Kazembe are tussling for control of the province.

Kazembe controversially won the provincial election of December last year punctuated by allegations of rigging, violence and several other abnormalities.

His controversial victory left the province fractured and recently, his camp tried to suspend Musarara although the overtures were thwarted by the leadership of the party.

Mudzimunyi said war veterans stood with Musarara and will not allow anyone to disrupt the party.

“We stand with Cde Musarara here and anyone who want to disturb that will pay. We will do to them what we did to (the late former president Robert) Mugabe,” he said amid wild acclamation from the audience.

Musarara, in a subsequent interview, said he was focusing on ensuing the party and its presidential candidate, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, obtain 100 000 votes in the 2023 general election.

“The party is very strong here. This is the first lady’s district and we are working hard mobilising people and ensuring that the party and the president win resoundingly,” he said.

“The district presently has 80 000 voters and we want to increased that to at least 100 000 by next year. That way, we will have contributed decently to the five million votes which the party wants to mobilise for the president at next year’s election.”

On divisions, he said: “We are not really focusing on who is fighting who. All we want is to ensure the party wins and that we reclaim the one seat currently occupied by the opposition. The people of Mazowe had a strong attachment to the party, not only from the liberation war perspective, but also from a developmental perspective. For instance, last year, we managed to fill the Nzvimbo GMB depot with maize for the first time in 15 years.”

“We have a very rich geographical endowment in terms of the soils, the rainfall pattern and we are a food basket for other districts in the country. We have been in touch with the people on the ground trying to implement the party’s manifesto of 2018. We have managed to improve roads, schools and clinics,” he said.

Musarara also sponsored the participation at the event of man-of-the-moment, Sungura artist Mark Ngwazi, who kept thousands of fans spellbound with his scintillating performances.

Ngwazi, who also hails from the district, was supported by several other artists, including popular rhumba musician Juntal.

“We thought it was wise to bring the artist closer to his fans and it’s a great idea. It is also meant to empower the artists because they are performing here for a fee,” Musarara said.

Ghost Of Violence Returns To Haunt Zanu PF

RECENT political violence that rocked the ruling Zanu PF party elections to choose Masvingo provincial youth chairperson has unsettled the party’s youth league boss John Paradza.

The post was left vacant after Paradza was elected into the national executive as Zanu PF deputy secretary for youth affairs.

Elections, held at Masvingo Polytechnic a fortnight ago to choose his successor, had to be suspended after youths exchanged blows in front of the provincial leadership.

“The most important thing as youths is to be disciplined. Our President Emmerson Mnangagwa has already said that we should be disciplined and be united. I condemn the violence in the strongest terms. I don’t want that. If you (contestants) fail to control your supporters, then how are you going to lead the province?” Paradza said during an interview with NewsDay on the sidelines of the Heroes Day celebrations at the National Heroes Acre in the capital on Monday.

Paradza also said he was not rooting for anyone for the vacant post.

“I am not backing anyone in the elections that are set to replace me. I don’t have any interest in the elections. I am now in the national executive, but I have said to all the candidates that ‘if you are the best candidate, you are going to win’. I want the best candidate to win,” he said.

Meanwhile, Zanu PF Mashonaland East province has rolled out what it calls “mop-up campaigns” in a bid to grab all 23 seats in the 2023 elections.

Zanu PF boasts 21 out of 23 constituencies in Mashonaland East after losing Goromonzi South and Marondera Central to the opposition in the last election.

Addressing scores of party supporters at Gumbonzvanda in Hwedza South constituency at the weekend, provincial chairperson Daniel Garwe said they were eyeing massive votes from Hwedza, Uzumba, Maramba, Pfungwe (UMP) and Goromonzi districts.

“Out of 79 000 people who have registered to vote in Hwedza, at least 80% (of the votes) must go to President Emmerson Mnangagwa,” Garwe said.

“There is a huge population in Goromonzi and UMP and we should put an eagle eye on these districts by stressing vigorous mop-up campaigns to increase the President’s votes.”

The province recently appointed a high-powered delegation led by politburo member David Parirenyatwa that is moving in districts mobilising people to register to vote.

The team is also assisting its members to obtain identity documents which are needed for voter registration and voting.

Zanu PF says it plans to mobilise five million votes, while Citizens Coalition for Change is eyeing six million.

ZESA In Desperate Bid To Recover US$62 Million From Top Govt Bosses

TOP government officials, critical security establishments, including police stations and ministry departments, were left in the dark last week after the country’s power utility, Zesa, switched them off in an attempt to recover US$62 million owed by exporting companies and ZW$17 billion by ordinary consumers.

The NewsHawks, after reporting on the blitz last week, established that several farms, some owned by government and politically connected individuals who were notorious for not paying for electricity were switched off. All along, they were being shielded from load shedding, but the blitz exposed how the bigwigs have not been paying for services rendered by parastatals.

Zesa executive chairperson Sydney Gata confirmed the blitz in a speech at the handover of vehicles in Harare,  but would not disclose those who were left in the dark. However, sources confirmed that government officials, councils, institutions and some police stations were affected.

“In as much as we try to capacitate the business, break even and deliver excellent quality service, we are owed US$62 million and ZW$17 billion by customers,” Gata said.

“We have since embarked on an aggressive debt collection blitz to recover what is owed to us. Just this past weekend, we disconnected various defaulters.”

This comes amid reports that local authorities are also planning a similar blitz, with

prominent names of companies and individuals also featuring prominently.

It emerged that of late, the power utility’s load shedding was not affecting powerful people, including politicians whose businesses consume a lot of electricity, while it affected lower-end power users.

“The challenge is that we are now in serious competition with other countries that rely on the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) for power. With Mozambique and Zambia generating much of the power, they now need payments upfront,” a local engineer told The NewsHawks this week.

Zimbabwe needs over US$17 million a month for electricity now coming mainly from Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (Zesco).

No Justice For August 1 Victims

By A Correspondent- Soldiers who shot and killed innocent civilians on 1 August  2018 have not been prosecuted, four years on, with growing calls for justice falling on deaf ears.

Despite appointing former South African president Kgalema Motlanthe to chair a commission of inquiry and make recommendations after the shootings which claimed six lives and left dozens others injured, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has ignored the voice of reason, including calls for justice by the victims and their families.

This, observers said, was indicative of impunity where state security can kill innocent civilians without repercussion.

It is reminiscent of the 1980s Gukurahundi genocide in Matabeleland and the Midlands where the 5th Brigade brutally killed civilians. Nearly 40 years after 20 000 civilians were killed, there is still no justice.

The government has neither apologised for Gukurahundi nor atoned for the 1 August shootings.

So far, only one victim, with the assistance of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, sued Defence minister Oppah Muchinguri and her Home Affairs counterpart Kazembe Kazembe and won his case. He is set to receive ZW$3 million in compensation.

Zakeo Mutimutema suffered injuries when soldiers shot him during the post-election protest in the capital.

He is among dozens shot on 1 August 2018 when protesters stormed the streets to demand the release of the presidential vote.

Six civilians were shot dead in central Harare when soldiers opened fire indiscriminately. According to autopsy reports, victims were shot in the back while fleeing the marauding soldiers.

Despite spending taxpayers’ money on instituting the commission of inquiry, the government has conveniently chosen to ignore the recommendations, which include the compensation of victims and bringing to book the murderous soldiers.

Four years on, families are still seeking justice while the victims live with the haunting memories of the shootings.

Loveday Munesi, a victim, still has a bullet lodged in one of his buttocks, after failing to secure funding for surgery in India.

Political analyst Rashweat Mukundu said Mnangagwa’s failure to bring to book the culprits, most of them still serving members of the military, is an indication that more atrocities against civilians could be committed in future and justice will never be served.

“The Motlanthe commission of inquiry into the shootings report has recommendations that have been thrown into the dustbin by Mnangagwa,” Mukundu said.

“The issue is forgotten and there seems to be no intention to address this matter,” he added.

He said those implicated, including senior military officers who dispatched soldiers onto the streets to shoot unarmed civilians, were still in the army while some have been deployed to key government institutions.

One of them, the then commander of the Presidential Guard, Anselem Sanyatwe, who also testified before the Motlanthe commission, is now Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Tanzania.

“The message is the same: abuses can be repeated. There is no justice for the victims and it was a way of silencing critics by way of pretending to act, but the true character of government is coming out on the matter,” Mukundu.

Added Mukundu: “It is not a surprise because the current government is hugely militarised and will not turn against themselves because they are in government and are the ones who are in power.”

Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition director Blessing Vava said there was growing concern over the government’s reluctance to act on the recommendations.

“The Coalition has held a series of interviews with relatives of the victims of the August 1, 2018 shootings and concern is high over non-implementation of the recommendations of the Motlanthe commission of inquiry,” Vava said.

Vava said ensuring justice and bringing closure to the events of 1 August 2018 is critical for national healing and reconciliation.

“We implore President Emmerson Mnangagwa to own up to his pledge of a new dispensation and ensure the implementation of the recommendations.”

Free Drivers’ Licences For Byo Youths Who Register To Vote

By A Correspondent- Bulawayo City Council Ward 26 councillor Mpumelelo Moyo is offering rewards to citizens who will mobilise the most youths to register as voters ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Twenty (20) “lucky” youths will be given an opportunity to obtain a driver’s licence free of charge if they register to vote.

There are also three deep freezers up for grabs for three people who will mobilise the highest number of youths to register.

Moyo said the campaign will run from 1 to 31 August and is being coordinated by a team of 50 people who are mobilising eligible residents to register to vote. He said:

We are driving Zimbabwe into the future by focusing on the youth whose participation in the voter registration process is low. I need all street champions to Champion this programme.

We secured 3 deep freezers for the 3 champions who will mobilise the most youths to register. We are starting from 1 August to 31 August.

At the end of the program, we will conduct a draw to select the first 20 lucky youths whom we will assist to attain class 4 driver’s licences.

This will also make them employable and generate income for themselves. We have put in place a Kombi to ferry them, all those that are ready can be transported to ZEC offices at Famona at any time convenient to them

“July Moyo Behind Harare Water Challenges”: Mliswa

Norton MP, Temba Mliswa (Independent), has blamed the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, July Moyo, for Harare’s current water challenges.

Wate taps ran dry in Harare for more than two days last week. While the precious liquid is now available in some suburbs, the water supply is erratic.

The Harare City Council attributed the water crisis to a lack of water treatment chemicals at the Morton Jaffray and Prince Edward water works.

Posting on Twitter, Mliswa accused Moyo of holding onto nearly $2 billion in devolution funds allocated to Harare by Treasury while the city fails to buy water treatment chemicals. Said Mliswa:

It is saddening to notice that the Local Government minister can watch the waterworks of our country’s capital completely shut down without showing much concern.

Here is a minister who is clinging on to devolution funds, and in the process, incapacitating Harare City’s crucial services like water treatment thereby exposing millions of residents to diseases.

This is the same man who corruptly pushed for the purchase and installation of water pumps. The big question is, what is the purpose of water pumps when you don’t have water?

A government of the people cannot afford to stand and watch while July is running riot exposing millions of people to diseases. This madness needs to be stopped.

Millions of Harare residents were forced to rely on unsafe water sources following the closure of the water treatment plants.

Sanyatwe, now Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Tanzania, was in charge of the Presidential Guard that killed six civilians on 1 August 2018.

The victims had protested against the delays by ZEC to release Presidential election results.

Home-Sick Kasukuwere Tackles Mnangagwa

By-Exiled former Zanu PF Political Commissar and Local Government Minister Saviour Kasukuwere has confronted President Emmerson Mnangagwa over the persecution of political opponents.

Kasukuwere confronted Mnangagwa on Monday and urged his government to stop using the law as a weapon against critics.

In a statement marking the country’s 42nd Heroes Day Commemorations on 8 August 2022, Kasukuwere said it was wrong for the government to hound citizens out of the country because of political differences. Said Kasukuwere:

No Zimbabwean should be imprisoned without charge for lawfully and rightfully taking part in our politics, no Zimbabwean should be persecuted because of political differences and no Zimbabwean should be exiled because of personal or political differences.

Ours is no longer a war of canons and guns, it is a war to deliver economic independence. We are no longer pressed with racial inequality, but we see economic inequality all around us.

Let us seize the opportunity to be the heroes of future generations and present. Let us rise to our generational calling. Out of us, heroes must emerge.

Kasukuwere also bemoaned the country’s seemingly unending economic challenges that have pushed millions of Zimbabweans out of the country in search of greener pastures. He said:

As we celebrate and remember, let’s not forget the Zimbabwean child toiling because of a lack of employment, lack of empowerment and lack of services.

Let us not forget the millions of Zimbabweans who have been forced to live as second-class citizens in other countries, sometimes subjected to degrading and inhumane conditions and discrimination in these foreign domiciles.

Khupe Assures Chamisa 1000 Bulilima Votes

By -Former deputy Prime minister and CCC member Thokozani Khupe said they were working on getting the 1000 votes needed for the party to win three wards in the upcoming by-election in Bulilima.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) will hold by-elections in Bulilima on September 3, 2022, in Ward 1, 14 and 16 following the resignation of ZANU PF councillors Tonny Mlotshwa and Ntungamili Dube and the death of Delani Mabhena.

Currently, ZANU PF controls 21 councillors in Bulilima Rural District Council while the opposition MDC Alliance has one ward.

Speaking during a recent Twitter space organised by the CCC Mthwakazi, a group of the party’s supporters based in the diaspora, Khupe, who was the deputy Prime Minister during the GNU era (2009-2013), said:

The by-election will build a strong foundation for the 2023 election. Bulilima used to be our stronghold up until 2013 and it is very possible for us to regain it.

We can only manage to generate these votes, if we have the right tools to use, hence the reason why we are appealing for your assistance in terms of fuel, t-shirts and flyers.

The manpower we have is ready to work but people need assistance to be able to interact with the electorate.

As you know, people vote for the party which interacts with them constantly. That is why it is important that we keep in touch with our electorate until September 2, a day before voting on September 3, 2022.

This can only happen if we go to all the villages and be there every day. That’s why we need fuel, fliers, and t-shirts.

Campaign teams can’t go without t-shirts and regalia because people want to identify with them through their regalia. People need that regalia so we are appealing to you.

We have people who are not registered, people who don’t want to vote and passive voters so we want to change them and make sure everybody votes because every vote counts.

We are going to be interacting with people on the voters’ roll, who are registered, talking to them to generate the 900 and 1 000 votes.

Redefining Patriotism

CONTESTING THE MEANING OF PATRIOTISM IN POST-COLONIAL ZIMBABWE

BY SIMBA MUKORI

Zimbabwe is a country in deep crisis. It is embroiled in a multi-faceted crisis of an unprecedented magnitude on numerous fronts-be they socio-legal or politico-economic.The country has experienced massive structural regression characterized by alarming levels of unemployment, infrastructural decay and enormous deterioration in the provision of critical social services.Endemic corruption, gross economic mismanagement, flagrant violations of human rights, blatant disregard of the rule of law and its selective application constitute an avalanche of problems that citizens continue to grapple with daily in contemporary Zimbabwe.

From war veterans bemoaning the harsh deterioration of their welfare to workers in various sectors of the economy lamenting the ruthless erosion of the value of their monthly incomes;from students protesting the denial of academic freedoms and access to quality, affordable education to peasants and the rural populace tearful about arbitrary displacements from their ancestral lands to pave way for ruling party’s Chinese friends,Zimbabwe at the present historical juncture has degenerated into an autocratic, authoritarian and tyrannical state that denies its citizens peace and happiness in their lifetime.

Amid these torrid and painful conditions, the broad mass of the people have become critical of the government and state, unhappy about the direction the country is taking.Instead of responding positively to the genuine concerns of the people, the government under Zanu pf always resort to coercive and repressive apparatuses of the state to deal with public discontent.
Of great concern is the labeling of anyone critical of the government as being unpatriotic and a sell-out!Any citizen who dare oppose the government’s heavy-handedness,excesses and ruinous policies is labelled unpatriotic.Actually,a whole discourse dubbed patriotic history has been widely deployed whose agenda is to indoctrinate the naive,to portray and privatize politics as the sole preserve of those who participated in the nationalist liberation movement prior to the independence of this beautiful land-locked country Zimbabwe.Zanu pf has been hitherto fostering a narrative that seeks to disqualify anyone who becomes critical of its administration from being considered a patriotic citizen. It has become unequivocally clear along the years that anyone who does not agree with the ruling, ruining party is labelled unpatriotic and a sell-out,even those who participated in the struggle for liberation like Cde Rugare Gumbo,Mai Mujuru and Dzikamai Mavhaire.Indeed,it is such notorious and treacherous shenanigans by Zanu that has provoked my interest to interrogate the meaning of patriotism in contemporary post-colonial Zimbabwe.

What does it mean to be patriotic? Can patriotism be reduced to mere partisanship,to a mere party affiliation or its much more broader and all-encompassing given the plurality of political parties with different ideologies and policy persuasions in a multi-party constitutional democracy? In the ultimate analysis, however,it must be unambiguously clear that Zanu must not be allowed to use the rhetoric of patriotism as a weapon for its hegemonic machinations and devices, risking a situation whereby all other citizens are relegated to second class citizens simply because they hold different opinions on how the country must be governed! Now they have even stooped so low as to enact a Patriotic Act whose obnoxious and nefarious agenda is suppression of people’s voices and repression of dissent and stifling democracy!

Many scholars have defined patriotism simply as being loyal to one’s country and motherland, with a greater emphasis on commitment and devotion to the values and beliefs a country holds dear.It denotes a sense of pride, dedication and affection in belonging to the motherland.True patriotism is reflected through active citizenship, which means active participation in the governance and development processes that contribute to the well-being of a nation-state and its people.

In most countries, the expressed will of the people, their aspirations, values, beliefs and hopes are enshrined in the constitution.Even in the case of Zimbabwe, reference can be made to the opening sections of the Supreme law that delineates lucidly what it terms national objectives, founding values and principles. It is beyond disputation that Zimbabwe is founded on respect for such principles like the supremacy of the constitution, rule of law, fundamental human rights and freedoms, recognition of the inherent dignity and worth of each human being, gender equality and good governance which emphasizes transparency and accountability and the equitable distribution of the nation’s abundant resources,to mention just a few.

The pursuit and promotion of such values, principles and ideals as enunciated in the constitution and loyalty to such noble objectives is what must constitute patriotism-which is love for one’s country, its people and all the resources in it.Suffice to say acts of commission or omission by the state and all its institutions and agencies of government at any level or any citizen that violate, disregard or undermine these values and principles that define our Zimbabwean nationhood amount to lack of patriotism!

Corruption is in violation of the founding values of the nation-state under good governance which entails transparency and accountability and therefore anyone guilty of such is unpatriotic.Hurting your citizens for daring to challenge how the affairs of the nation are managed is what must be deemed as unpatriotic.Using the state for personal enrichment at the expense of the broad mass of our people is unpatriotic.Colluding with exploitative and extractive callous Chinese capitalists to dispossess our people of their ancestral communal lands and deprive them of livelihoods is unpatriotic. To deny workers decent wages, students a better education and war veterans a better welfare is pure hatred for the people which is the opposite of patriotism.Multiple farm owners are damn unpatriotic! In fact,Zanu represents and is a true reflection of the lack of patriotism..if by patriotism we mean love of the country, the people and all its endowments.

How on earth can Hopewell Chin’ono who is exposing and fighting corruption be labelled unpatriotic while Obadiah and Priscilla Mupfumira who stole millions of United States dollars be considered patriots? How can Makomborero who is demanding democracy be regarded unpatriotic when villains like Henrietta Rushwaya smuggle our country’s gold but is embraced by those who have arrogated themselves powers to define patriotism? How can Netsai Marova,Cecilia Chimbiri and Joanna Mamombe be seen as unpatriotic for demanding household food security, respect for human rights and a stop to gender-based violence while those who abuse women like Mary Mubaiwa are celebrated as patriots?

It must be stated categorically that it was the love for and a pure vision of a Zimbabwe where democracy and respect for human rights would flourish and thrive that inspired the struggle for liberation. The supreme sacrifices that the illustrious gallant young men and women of yesteryear paid to get rid of settler white supremacist domination and subjugation was motivated by clear objectives. It was the desire to restore human dignity to all through respect for human rights and end all forms of discrimination, reclaim land previously lost through colonial dispossession, achieve equitable distribution of natural resources among the citizenry and establish a socio-legal order that would guarantee the security of persons and accord each and everyone an equal opportunity.
In the wake of an African nationalist victory,a more democratic and human rights-based society was the logical expectation.Regrattably, the authoritarianism, state brutality and maladministration of the colonial era seems to have reproduced itself in the present leadership as it is clear that for the past 41 years Zanu has failed to deliver on the promises and expectations of independence. In what others have termed the pursuit of the unfinished business of the liberation struggle,an intergenerational consensus that seeks to fight for the previously envisioned Zimbabwe has taken shape.Just like those who converged around the idea of black majority rule before independence were labelled terrorist by Rodhesian settlerism, today the citizens who are converging for change, who are fighting for a better Zimbabwe that performs for all are like wise being labelled unpatriotic and sellouts. This labeling is not new.

The fight against corruption is an act of patriotism. The desire for a developmental state that improves the quality of life of the broad mass of our people is an act of patriotism.Broadly speaking, the fight for a post-nationalist democratic alternative that is inclusive, accountable, transparent and responsive to the needs, aspirations and desires of the people is a reflection of patriotism.

Zanu must never be allowed to define patriotism to suit its own insidious agendas and to delegetimise other citizens from the historiography of Zimbabwean nationhood. It is the love for this country that is the motivation behind all the fight by progressive Zimbabweans for a better country. This is a discourse that we must contest and define what patriotism means to us as a people. We cannot leave this noble duty to lootocrats and kleptocrats in Zanu pf.

Until victory!!

Odinga, Ruto Battle For Supremacy

Outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta, having served the constitutionally limited two terms, is backing one-time foe Raila Odinga, 77, to succeed him.

His decision followed a falling out with Deputy President William Ruto, 55, who had expected to be endorsed.

More than 22 million Kenyans have registered to vote.

There are several other elections happening at the same time and a mix-up of ballot papers in some areas for some of those votes has again raised questions about the organisation of the general election.

Polls are open for 11 hours from 06:00 local time (03:00 GMT). Anyone still in the queue at closing time will be allowed to vote.

The results of the last presidential election in 2017 were annulled after the Supreme Court ruled that the electoral commission had not followed the law when it came to the electronic transmission of the vote tallies from the polling stations.

Seven charts that explain Kenya ahead of elections
Judges ruled that “illegalities and irregularities” had taken place.

A re-run was won by Mr Kenyatta, but boycotted by Mr Odinga – the main opposition candidate at the time.

The chairman of the electoral commission, Wafula Chebukati, who was also in charge of the 2017 vote, has frequently tried to reassure Kenyans that his team will be up to the task this time.

But Monday’s logistical problems have increased the pressure on him.

Baba v Hustler
This election looks like it will be a tight race between frontrunners Mr Odinga and Mr Ruto.

Mr Odinga – a long-serving opposition leader, nicknamed Baba (“father”) by his supporters, is running for president for a fifth time. Mr Ruto, who has tried to emphasise his connection with ordinary Kenyans by calling himself a “hustler”, will be taking his first stab at the presidency.

Two other candidates – David Mwaure and George Wajackoya – are also in the race.

Despite the campaign being dominated by issues, ethnic loyalty may also play a part in determining how people vote.

For the first time in the multi-party era none of the main candidates are from the country’s largest ethnic group – Kikuyu.

But knowing that those votes are vital, both have chosen Kikuyu running mates.

Voting process
To win the presidential race in the first round, a candidate needs:

more than half of all the votes cast across the country
at least 25% of the votes cast in a minimum of 24 counties.
Voters will also be choosing MPs and senators to go to the national parliament, county governors and county assembly members, as well as 47 women’s representatives to sit in the National Assembly.

On election day, voters will have their fingerprint scanned to check their identity but a printed register can also be used if the machines fail.

Each voter will then be given colour-coded ballot papers for each of the elections, which they will mark in a private booth and drop in the relevant ballot boxes.

Counting will start at the polling stations shortly after voting ends. Officials will then take a photo of the final tally and send the image to both the constituency and national tallying centres.

To ensure transparency the media, political parties and civil society groups have been urged to run their own tallies using final results declared at the more than 40,000 polling stations.

But only the electoral commission can declare the winner of the presidential election after verifying the physical and digital forms sent to the national tallying centre.

The main presidential candidates have vowed to respect the result of the elections.- BBC

Ngwazi Missing At Own Show

Scores of revellers were injured at PaGomba Cafe in Beitbridge when disgruntled fans threw missiles indiscriminately after sungura artiste Mark Ngwazi failed to show up for a show.

At first revellers pelted an unknown stand-in-band to vent their anger after having been let down by Ngwazi.

“Police can confirm there was crowd trouble at the PaGomba Cafe when an artiste who was supposed to play at the weekend did not show up. We have not had any reports from people who were injured, but police attended a scene where revellers threw missiles at random, most probably disappointed having paid money for a show that never was,” Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo said yesterday.

“The revellers destroyed the windows of a minibus that was used as the cash point into the venue where scores of people gathered for the show.”

None of the injured made a police report, but the owner of the joint who had hired the band reported the trouble to police, Nyongo said.

Ngwazi yesterday said he had nothing to say.

“You can just write that I have nothing regarding the issue. I am about to perform here at the Defence Forces event and you want me to say something now because you want me to, you can go ahead and say I have nothing to say,” he said before cutting the call.

The operator of PaGomba Cafe known only as Simbini was not picking calls yesterday.

One reveller said posters advertising Ngwazi’s show at PaGomba were posted around the border town and a charge of $5 was levied at the gate.

“Scores of fun-loving people gathered and there was another band playing which everyone mistook for curtain raiser artistes. Later news that Ngwazi had not come filtered through and trouble started,” Nyongo said.

The crowd started pelting the band and when it ran for cover the riotous crowd continued throwing missiles everywhere.

“Trouble spilt into the car park outside the venue where some people targeted the minibus used as the cash collection point. Its windows were shattered by the angry crowd,” said a security guard at the venue.

Some revellers sustained cuts after they were hit by bottles.

Many were caught unaware.

“It’s robbery; it is daylight robbery and such promoters must be banned,” one reveller said.–Newsday

Zanu PF Bigwigs Destroy Chivi School

Thusanani Oryx

Chivi – Turmoil has ruined Chivi North’s Ruminya Secondary as Senior Zanu PF leaders are reportedly interfering in the running of the school with head identified as Kwanisai running for dear life.

A local teacher who is reportedly a local person is linked to senior politicians.

“The teacher has been in the administration for quite a long time.
“The teacher is using his connection to undermine the head” fumed villagers.

Parents with children at the school said if the teacher identified as JB wants the post, he must read.

This has noted been the only case of teachers being victimised by Zanu PF bigwigs.

Schools are not devwloping because of harassment.

Some learners have been left without teachers because of Zanu PF thugs.

Apart from Chivi district, Gutu district also tops in political victimisation of teachers.
In the end, parents and children suffer not politicians.

Ruminya Sec School Head flees for his life after Acting Deputy chases him with an axe:: In a bizzare incident that has sent tongues waging in the Mukotosi area of Headman Madamombe in Chief Chivi, a School Head at Ruminya High School Mr Tsikisayi Kwanisayi had to flee for his life after an irate Acting Deputy known as JB chased him with an axe baying for his blood in the early hours of Wednesday 3 August 2022 accusing him of removing him from the office as a dog It was only an alert husband of a female teacher by the name Tagwirei who came to the rescue of a visibly shaken Kwanisai who got hold of the axe from Mr JB otherwise the Head would be history by now. What incensed JB is that the school head announced to the staff members and at School Assembly that he has reshuffled his school administration since JB is not degreed and rather incompetent while the school boasts of many graduates. This did not go down well with JB hence the outburst and altercation with the Head. It is alleged JB sought the support of Headman Madamombe and Councellor God. Huruba to be reinstated as Acting Deputy Head. Councellor Huruba is said to have intervened by phoning Chivi DSi who summoned Kwanisayi for a hearing on Thursday 4 August 2022 and instructed the Head to reinstate JB into office but teachers at the are crying foul and claim the school is now in shambles

Mnangagwa Praises Mugabe Foes

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has officially recognised late pioneering nationalists Ndabaningi Sithole and James Chikerema as part of the country’s standout heroes despite regurgitating his predecessor’s views the two sold out during the struggle for independence.

Sithole and Chikerema were both allies-turned-enemies of late former State leader Robert Mugabe who adamantly denied them the honour over grudges stemming from the liberation war period.

Mnangagwa made the pronouncement while leading the main celebrations of the country’s 42nd Heroes Day Commemorations at the National Shine, Harare.

Sithole, a founding Zanu President, was in 1975 ousted by former allies in place of Mugabe.

He died in 2000 aged 80 after enduring a frustrating political career that involved relentless persecution by the then State leader.

On his part, Chikerema, uncle and Mugabe contemporary, was a fierce fire-brand in his heyday.

The two had frequent run-ins dating back to their boyhood extending into pre and post-independence when both waged the liberation struggle from their different stations.

Chikerema succumbed to cancer in a US hospital March 2006 aged 81.

Mugabe took his grudges with the two right to their graves through hero status denial.

In attempts to undo his predecessor’s perceived transgressions, Mnangagwa has moved to confer the honour on Sithole and Chikerema.

“As the Second Republic, we are committed to giving a wholistic account of our country’s long war of liberation.

“We are therefore rising to the occasion and recognising other heroes and heroines such as the late Reverend Ndabaningi Sithole and the late Cde James Chikerema for their historical contributions, despite their areas of weaknesses, with regards to the observance of the correct line of the Revolution.

“For that reason, we now honour them among the list of our national heroes and heroines.

“We forever remain indebted to all the heroes and heroines of our great country for the freedom, democracy and independence we enjoy to this day. Their sacrifices will never die.”

Mnangagwa said his government also honours citizens who have excelled in other facets of life and not just in the liberation struggle.

Said the State leader, “The nation may recall that, in 2021, my Government established the following honours; the Robert Gabriel Mugabe Commendation Award; the Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo Commendation Award; and the Herbert Wiltshire Pfumaindini Chitepo Commendation Award in recognition of the sacrifices and outstanding feats achieved by the country’s founding fathers.

“We shall, thus, recognise and honour heroism beyond the war of liberation and defence sector. Milestones in science, technology and innovation; the accelerated development and growth of our economy as well as the growth of ‘Made in Zimbabwe’ goods and services are applauded and celebrated. So too are initiatives around cultural preservation and other heroic efforts by our people, both at home and abroad, that raise the Zimbabwe National Flag high.

We Can’t Be Taught Democracy By Detractors- Mnangagwa

President Emmerson Mnangagwa said Western powers cannot teach democracy to Zimbabweans because they oppressed the country and denied its citizens the right to self-determination for decades.

In his address to the nation at the 42nd Heroes Day Commemorations held at the National Heroes Acre on Monday, Mnangagwa said Zimbabwe attained democracy through a protracted armed struggle. He said:

In line with my administration’s commitment to upholding the democracy bequeathed to us by our fallen heroes and heroines, Zimbabwe is unrelenting in its pursuit to entrench constitutionalism, the rule of law, and good governance and respect for human rights.

We cannot be taught democracy by those who denied us democracy. The heroes we honour fought for democracy and the equal access to justice we are enjoying as a country.

Let us, therefore, individually and collectively, protect it from all forms of abuse and desecration, more so, by those who never came to our help during the brutal oppressive years under white settler colonial regime.

Albeit as a peace-loving nation, Zimbabwe is a friend to all and an enemy to none.

The United States, Britain and their allies imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe at the turn of the Millenium citing the breakdown of the rule of law and violation of human rights.

However, the ZANU PF-led government insists the Western countries imposed sanctions to punish Zimbabweans for repossessing land from white farmers and redistributing it to the landless black majority.

Drowning Prevention Measures

Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a call for people around the world to “do one thing” to prevent drowning.

As one of the leading causes of death globally for children and young people ages 1–24, and the third leading cause of injury-related deaths overall, drowning tragically claims more than 236 000 lives each year. To galvanize action and mark World Drowning Prevention Day, the Jet d’Eau in Geneva will be illuminated in blue this evening, accompanied by similar actions in other cities around the world.

More than 90% of drowning deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, with children under the age of 5 being at highest risk. These deaths are frequently linked to daily, routine activities, such as bathing, collecting water for domestic use, travelling over water on boats or ferries, and fishing. The impacts of seasonal or extreme weather events – including monsoons – are also a frequent cause of drowning and these impacts are largely preventable through a number of interventions.

“Every year, around the world, hundreds of thousands of people drown. Most of these deaths are preventable through evidence-based, low-cost solutions,” said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “Today, cities around the world are lighting up their monuments in blue light as a call to action for each of us to do our part to prevent drowning. Let’s put a stop to drowning.”

“Drowning is a global public health challenge, and at Bloomberg Philanthropies, we’re focused on implementing solutions to prevent it.

Today, we’re joining our partners around the world in recognizing World Drowning Prevention Day and taking action,” said Michael R. Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies and WHO Global Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries. “In many cases, we know what works to prevent drowning. We’ve developed tools and guidance to help governments implement solutions – and if we do more together, we really can save thousands of lives.”

WHO recommends 6 evidence-based measures to prevent drowning, including installing barriers controlling access to water; training bystanders in safe rescue and resuscitation; teaching school-aged children basic swimming and water safety skills; providing supervised day care for children; setting and enforcing safe boating, shipping and ferry regulations; and improving flood risk management.

This year, the theme of World Drowning Prevention Day invites the global community to “do one thing” to prevent drowning. Examples of actions that can be taken are as follows:

Individuals can share drowning prevention and water safety advice with their families, friends and colleagues, sign up for swimming or water safety lessons, or support local drowning prevention charities and groups.

Groups can host public events to share water safety information, launch water safety campaigns, or commit to developing or delivering new drowning prevention programmes using recommended best practice interventions.

Governments can develop or announce new drowning prevention policies, strategies, legislation or investment, convene multisectoral roundtables or parliamentary discussions on drowning burden and solutions, and introduce or commit to supporting drowning prevention programming domestically or internationally.
Many countries in the world have committed to drowning prevention programmes.

Bangladesh has started a 3-year program to reduce drowning among children throughout the country. As part of the program, the government will take over the 2 500 daycares established and funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies since 2012, and will expand the program by adding an additional 5 500 daycares to provide supervision to 200 000 children ages 1–5 years.

Be Objective, President Chamisa Exhorts Elections Body In Kenya

Tinashe Sambiri|CCC leader President Nelson Chamisa believes the elections in Kenya are being conducted in a peaceful and democratic way.

According to President Chamisa, Zimbabwe and Kenya have a lengthy history of cooperation.

Outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta, having served the constitutionally limited two terms, is backing one-time foe Raila Odinga, 77, to succeed him.

His decision followed clashes with Deputy President William Ruto, 55, who had expected to be endorsed.

More than 22 million Kenyans have registered to vote.

On Tuesday President Chamisa said in a statement:
“KENYA and ZIMBABWE have a long history of cooperation in various facets for the growth & development of our Peoples. As Kenyans go to the polls,we wish our Cdes & Kenyans in general,a peaceful democratic transition. Be assured Zimbabweans are with you now & beyond.

ELECTIONS IN KENYA…Kenya is in labour…

Lots of key lessons and take aways from the Elections body and the Players in Politics in Kenya.Elections must be credible & peaceful.

It’s the destiny of a nation – a vital turning point for any nation.#KenyaDecides2022.”

President Chamisa Salutes Defence Forces

THE DEFENCE FORCES – A CITIZENS’ FORCE!

Today is an important day, a historic day, one penned in the history of the birth of our nation Zimbabwe by the sacrifices and toil of many men, women and children who paid the ultimate price to liberate this nation.

To our revered uniformed forces, to all our men and women in uniform of all ranks – top to bottom, we love and honour you all.

I salute you, our dedicated men and women in uniform on the occasion of this special day, a day to celebrate our Defence Forces.

Indeed, I salute and duly acknowledge the unstinting and committed service that you, our patriotic security services, continue to render to our beloved beautiful country-Zimbabwe, even under extremely difficult circumstances and challenges.

Soldiers, like the Police Service, Prison Service and Intelligence Service are badges of patriotism, symbols of the State and embodiment of the collective will of a people. The security forces are above party politics. You stand for country not party.

Except in rare moments when partisan politics toxifies the esteemed Defence Forces establishment, I, with pride and honour, salute our men and women in uniform for their versatility and adeptness in defending national and regional security.

Like the great singer said, ‘We love Zimbabwe and all its wealth..Mothers and Fathers are in them..Stand up Zimbabwe! ‘Tinoda Zimbabwe neupfumi hwayo hwose..Vana Mai nanaBaba ndimo mavari..Simuka Zimbabwe! ‘Sifuna iZimbabwe lenotho yayo yonke. Bobaba labomama yini abanikazi bomnotho weLizwe. Phakama Zimbabwe Phakama.’

As a nation, we fought a just war of liberation and the dedication, sacrifice and patriotism of the sons and daughters of this land deserve our veneration and utmost respect.

We are a liberation nation, a freedom nation and warrior nation and a God-fearing nation.

No country in the world has prospered and will ever prosper without a strong disciplined, progressive, well resourced, well paid, well fed and patriotic uniformed force behind it.

Even prior to our independence, the success of pre-colonial African states depended largely upon strong military support.

There are many examples in Africa and even in ZIMBABWE , the Mutapa State, the Rozvi Dynasty, the Zulu State, the Ndebele State and the Mandinka empire in WestAfrica (under Mansa Sundiata Keita, who founded the empire), to mention a few.

Whereas the courts are the guardians and guarantors of justice and rule of law, our security forces are the guarantors of our sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, citizens dignity, freedoms and liberty.

As our security forces you are the protectors and defenders of our safety and security.

As the uniformed force you are the protector of our resources, protector of our heritage, protector of independence, protector of the citizens, protector of our people and indeed protectors of our sovereignty and dignity as a people.

We recognize and cherish this important role you have played and continue to play.

You do this for the benefit of your beloved country and not for the benefit of a political leader or individual politicians. Politicians come and go, serve and leave – but you are a permanent citizens’ institution. You are patriots. Patriotism is non-partisan.

As citizens coalesce for Change, we affirm our respect and honour to you our national pride. We salute you as one of our national institutions, a people’s institution – a Citizens’ institution.

And as patriotic men and women, you have volunteered to play a patriotic role in national identity, growth and self determination.

We are aware of your challenges, circumstances and predicament in resources, livelihoods and welfare.

Nonetheless, as the citizens coalesce for change throughout the country, we commit to you that we will respect you and honour you for volunteering to serve us.

We will honour and respect you by shaming and condemning those who seek to undermine the great you have been for our great country.

We will honour and respect you by advocating and providing decent wages and living conditions commensurate with the pivotal and vital role you play and responsibilities you bear.

Above all, we will advocate that you have a fair share of our resources, decent housing and title deeds .

We will honour and respect you by condemning the unnecessary, unwarranted and unmerited purging or discrimination on tribal and patronage basis at the expense of merit and service.

Most importantly, at an individual level you are part and parcel of the citizens. You are eminent citizens.

As we coalesce for this historic change, we do so with you as citizens and together with your grandfathers, grandmothers, fathers, mothers, children, nieces, nephews, grand children and all relatives scattered around the country.

We do so above all with you as the protectors and guarantors of citizens Freedoms.

Right to free speech, Right to freedom of association, including political association. No one should ever be imprisoned or persecuted for holding a different political viewpoint or for telling truth to power. On that I call for the cessation of hostilities and an immediate release of all victims of political persecution.

We promise and commit that we will work well with you for the transformation, betterment and development of our great country as we build our great nation.

The CITIZENS’ GOVERNMENT will be a patriotic government. The Citizens’ government will not only push for a robust accelerated economic development but will also invest in security of nation.

Rest assured, the future Government of Zimbabwe will not go back on the values for which our veterans sacrificed. Values of Right to Self Deternination, Right to Vote, Rights to our mineral wealth, rights to land – With Title Deeds.

As the Citizens’ Government, with will stand shoulder to shoulder with our heroes in the service of this great nation, And rest assured, there is no reversal of the land acquisition,

Our Citizens’ army must and shall be the strongest and well resourced army in the region. Every Zimbabwean must feel protected and be assured to be defended. We will put money and invest in our security -citizens’ security.

I salute you and the people of Zimbabwe who gave their children, their brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, uncles and aunts to liberate and protect this great nation.

Let us build and work together for a better and prosperous Zimbabwe.

God bless our Defence and Security Forces!

Nelson Chamisa, Change Champion.

ZimStat Yet To Pay Census Enumerators

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Statistical Agency (ZIMSTAT) is yet to pay enumerators who participated in the 2022 national housing and population census.

The census was conducted in the second half of April and ZIMSTAT has already released preliminary results of the census but has failed to pay enumerators their allowances.

The enumerators, most of them teachers, feel they have been short-changed by ZIMSTAT. Speaking to NewsDay on condition of anonymity, a teacher from Chitungwiza said:

We have not received the allowances that we signed for when we were engaged by ZIMSTAT for the enumeration process.

Back then, the interbank rate was just below $150 to US$1, but imagine what the amount would be if the payment is done now at that rate.

We only received allowances for training. But they have already announced the census results before paying us, imagine. They have completely forgotten us.

ZIMSTAT public relations executive Roland Chiringa confirmed that the enumerators have not been paid. He said:

The enumerators have been given part payment for the exercise. It is true, but for now, I cannot give you detailed information on how they will be paid because I am not on duty.

Tsenengamu Warns Zanu Pf Youths

By A Correspondent- Former ZANU PF Youth League political commissar Godfrey Tsenengamu says his erstwhile colleagues are being given false hope by the party’s senior leadership.

Tsenengamu, who now leads the Front for Economic Emancipation in Zimbabwe (FEEZ), said top ZANU PF leaders don’t care about youths’ well-being and are only concerned with giving their children and girlfriends economic opportunities.

He posted on Facebook:

Muri kupiwa false hope nguva ichipera (you are wasting time holding onto false hope).

It is sad that you vote for them into government assuming that they will use that mandate to represent you, empower and create opportunities for you when all they need is that power to defend and protect their economic interests and investments.

They also want to use that power to take away opportunities from you and give them to their children and girlfriends and also use that power to deal with you when you threaten their bread and butter.

To worsen matters, you have no strong and principled youth leadership to represent you even in your party but a bunch of bootlickers, praise-singers and parrots.

Tsenengamu was expelled from ZANU PF in March 2020 following his suspension the previous month for alleging that top allies of President Emmerson Mnangagwa including Kuda Tagwirei, had captured State institutions and were running cartels.

He had made the allegations together with the then deputy youth secretary Lewis Matutu during a press conference.

While Matutu was spared the axe by the Politburo, Tsenengamu was fired after he refused to apologise and undergo ideological reorientation.

Govt Creates “Teachers For ED” | ARE YOU JOINING?

PRESS STATEMENT

Having noted with great concern , politicians working in cahoots with Ministry officials to introduce a political creature disguised as Trs 4 ED We urge the teachers to disregard , dissaprove and dismiss the abuse of the teacher through the commiserate schemes played by the regime under the guise of such schemes as “Teachers for Economic Development.”

Like any other worker and progression, teachers should be left free and distant from partisan politics and if they choose to be involved let it be voluntary and outside workbounds. The constitution of Zimbabwe under section 64 and 65 clearly makes a demand for good administrative conduct and that means administrative conduct that free from political intrusion.

The regime has developed a tendency of abusing the education sector over the years. It began with forcing pupils to rallies, using school buses to ferry supporters and school grounds for rallies again. This in and of itself is an abrogation of law and principle which we should stand firm against.

We shall not condone the exploitation of the education sector in doing Zanu PF ‘s commiserate work. The independence and freedom of the teacher should be respected.

What boggles the mind is that the very same system that has created poverty, misery and demeaned our profession is now coming back under the banner of Trs 4 ED .

It is clear that our employer has the means to pay us a living and decent wage that we deserve. We can’t be expected to live on dog’s tax disguised as a salary and then allow the same the same source of problem try to come in dark garments of Trs 4ED pretending to have solutions of our suffering yet we know that their interest is mainly to harvest as little votes as they can from the education sector.

Kasukuwere Confronts Mnangagwa

Khupe On 1000 Bulilima Votes For Chamisa

ED Honours Mugabe Enemies, Ignores Tsvangirai

By-President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday honoured his predecessor Robert Mugabe’s political enemies and ignored the late Prime minister and MDC founder, Morgan Tsvangirai.

At the country’s 42 Heroes commemorations, Mnangagwa officially recognised late pioneering nationalists Ndabaningi Sithole and James Chikerema as part of the country’s standout heroes despite regurgitating Mugabe’s views the two sold out during the struggle for independence.

Sithole and Chikerema were allies-turned-enemies of late former State leader Robert Mugabe who adamantly denied them the honour over grudges stemming from the liberation war period.
“Befittingly, therefore, I shall confer the medals to four outstanding individuals.”

Harare Mayor Calls For Recognition Of Late Morgan Tsvangirai As A National Hero

HARARE Mayor, Jacob Mafume Monday called for the recognition of the late former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai as a national hero for his unequivocal role in opening up democratic space in the country.

Tsvangirai, who was founder of opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), served as Prime Minister in the Government of National Unity (GNU), a political compromise he struck with later former strongman, Robert Mugabe.

The opposition stalwart passed away on February 14, 2018 after battling colon cancer.

Mafume, a Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) councillor for Mt Pleasant Ward 17, said Heroes Day commemorations were hollow without mentioning Tsvangirai’s name on the list of heroes.

“The journey of human rights is not a picture event, it is a continuous process. We are part of that process to make sure our country understands that there is strength in diversity,” he said.

“There are some heroes who are yet to be recognised, like Morgan Tsvangirai. They need formal status, heroes who did a lot for the democratisation of this country, heroes who did a lot to accept that we can belong to different parties, but still be one nation.”

“We have no quarrel with the sacrifices by (Josiah) Tongogara. Neither do we have quarrel with sacrifices by Herbert Chitepo, (Ndabaningi) Sithole and the many other young people who sacrificed their lives for our independence and liberation.

“If they respect us, we respect them. If they honour us, we honour them, and that is how a nation should be,” Mafume said.

Chamisa Defends Zim Heroes Against Abuse By Zanu PF

MAIN opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has criticised government for conferring hero statuses to Zanu PF party members only, saying national heroes should not bear allegiance to any political party.

In his Heroes Day statement yesterday, Chamisa applauded national heroes for their sacrifice in liberating the country, but said war veterans should not allow themselves to be used in “dirty work” by politicians.

“We salute all our heroes and veterans dead and living, who sacrificed to birth our great nation. We owe it to our heroes and posterity to preserve and crusade the ideals of social justice, an abiding culture of human rights and a gratifying socio-economic order,” he tweeted.

“Each nation has its struggles to be fought and won. Each generation has its heroes who pay the ultimate sacrifice to transform society for the better. National heroes sacrifice for a country, not an organisation or a political party. Heroes are Zimbabwean heroes, not partisan.

“Our memory of our great heroes should not sink or be reduced into sentimentality and platitudes. Heroes don’t beat, harass, maim and murder people for politicians.”

Last month, Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa bragged that the country’s armed forces and war veterans were Zanu PF appendages, raising fears that the party could be preparing to rope them in to perpetrate violence in next year’s elections.

While the CCC did not attend the Heroes Day commemorations yesterday, CCC party interim national organiser Amos Chibaya said they would attend today’s Defence Forces Day.

“We value the role played by the defence forces in safeguarding peace in our motherland. We, therefore, urge all our champions to attend this important event,” Chibaya said.

In a statement, Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) lamented the country’s multi-faceted crisis saying that it has betrayed the values of those who participated in the liberation struggle.

“The new dispensation has failed the democratic test and we continue to witness the same brutality that motivated living and fallen heroes to fight for an independent Zimbabwe,” the CiZC statement read.

“The values of the liberation struggle have been betrayed, with the majority of Zimbabweans still economically disempowered and dissatisfied with the economic gains from liberation struggle. The level of inequality remains high.”

The Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC Alliance also said: “Post-independence, the erstwhile struggle for democracy and the ideals of the liberation struggle has remained unabated, unfortunately claiming yet more lives of our own kith and kin at the hands of our liberators who have deviated from the people’s aspirations. We, therefore, remember our liberation war heroes in the same breath as those who also lost their lives in the post-independence struggle for democracy, such as our party founding stalwart, Morgan Richard Tsvangirai of blessed memory.”

In a statement yesterday, the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum said: “Reflecting on the 42 years since the first Heroes Day commemoration, the ideals of the war of liberation that countless heroes died for remain unfulfilled. The government, instead of realigning its actions to the values of the liberation struggle, is coming up with restrictive laws to further choke the already depressed democratic
space.

“The Private Voluntary Organisations Act, a colonial piece of legislation, is being amended in ways that infringe on constitutional rights to association, assembly, and expression. We believe this is not what the heroes and heroines of the Second Chimurenga fought for. The proposed Patriotic Bill is synonymous with some of the colonial laws that the freedom fighters fought against.”

Rate Of School Dropouts Worrying

ZIMBABWE has recorded a 20% increase in school dropouts since 2020 when schools were closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, a new report by the Union of Education Norway in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Teachers Association (Zimta) has revealed.

The report follows a similar one conducted by the United States Embassy in 2021, which said an estimated 840 000 schoolchildren quit school since 2020 following the COVID-19 outbreak.

Another recent report by the Family Aids Caring Trust Zimbabwe revealed that close to 20 000 girls dropped out of school since the COVID-19 outbreak.

Zimta education director and senior co-ordinator Dennis Sinyolo told NewsDay that the latest report was an assessment of the impact of the closure of schools during the COVID-19 lockdown period.

“We discovered that, indeed, there were so many problems with some being common knowledge that the closure of schools brought about a lot of dropouts. Some learners were affected to a point where it was very difficult for them to return to school when schools reopened,” Sinyolo said.

“Some lost their parents or guardians while others joined the informal trading sector and gold panning. The girl child, in particular, was the most affected. Some of them got married and became pregnant at a very young age. The situation was quite bad,” he said.

Pointing out that despite attempts to stop the dropout by introducing online learning amid more disparities, Sinyolo added: “Unfortunately, online learning brought about more disparities among the learners, especially those in the rural areas and some from the urban areas were also affected. Those children from poorer families who could not afford modern technologies to undergo online learning missed lessons.”

One of the researchers, Thembinkosi Tshabalala said some of the study’s findings included that the girl child and children with disabilities were the most affected.

She said: “There were huge gaps in terms of learning during the crisis, especially in rural areas. Girls have been affected by COVID-19 and were abused and thrown into child marriages. Unfortunately, this is a phenomenon we see across Africa and not only in Zimbabwe.

“Rural children and children with disabilities have been left behind. That is why it is vitally important for the Government of Zimbabwe to put in place a mechanism to ensure full recovery of the education sector.”

Primary and Secondary Education ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said: “Those are lies. We have children back in classrooms. We have had outreach programmes where we asked all learners out of school to come back to school. We have had an Education Amendment Act crafted and it stipulates that even pregnant girls must be allowed to continue with formal education.  Those figures in the report are malicious.”

Govt Slammed For Exporting Teachers To Rwanda

Teachers yesterday said they felt let down by government following its decision to export teachers to Rwanda while the country is facing an acute shortage of teachers.

The country’s education sector requires an estimated 200 000 teachers.Last month Public Service minister Paul Mavima said the country had completed bilateral relations with Rwanda where it was going to send mainly people in the teaching profession to work in that country.

Around 447 teachers will be exported to Rwanda to join other Zimbabwean teachers already there.

Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (Artuz) president Obert Masaraure said it was very unfortunate that government was exporting the most experienced teachers at a time the country’s schools are under-staffed.

“Our government doesn’t seem to care about delivering on its mandate to provide education to the people as stipulated in section 75 of the Constitution,” Masaraure said.

“The teachers are also severely underpaid, they are leaving in droves to destinations other than Rwanda. Government should prioritise paying a living wage to retain quality teachers in the country.”

Educators Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general Tapedza Zhou said: “Government is exporting teachers yet the conditions are actually tougher there. At the moment there is no indication that they shall enjoy better salaries. This is also despite the fact that we still have local demand for teachers which is well above 20 000 and questions are easily raised on why export what you still need? It only makes sense when we conclude that the government has failed teachers,” Zhou said.

“Rwanda has an interest in Zimbabwean teachers because it expects them to be docile and loyal in the face of poor remuneration and harsh working conditions. Rwanda has not yet attracted teachers from other countries in the Sadc region because they are better paid and not readily available to oppressive conditions that Zimbabwean teachers may agree to. Clearly, Zimbabwean teachers are an easy prey to Rwanda’s plans because they are exploitable.”

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe president Takavafira Zhou, however, said there was nothing wrong in sending teachers to Rwanda.

“We call upon the government to ensure that there are broad government-to-government agreements with many regional and continental countries. It is prudent to engage teachers’ unions over the agreements in order to maximise co-operation and have a smooth transition that would not disadvantage learners in Zimbabwe,” Zhou said.

Zimbabwe Teachers Association secretary-general Goodwill Taderera said: “Government exporting teachers to Rwanda is a positive move since it is failing to pay teachers locally.”

Mavima promised to comment on the issue, but had not done so at the time of going to print yesterday.

Lawyer Tino Chinyoka Resigns From Petrotrade Board

Harare based lawyer Advocate Tinomudaishe Chinyoka resigned as the Board Chairman of Petrotrade (Private) Limited on exactly the same day the government through cabinet confirmed the sale of the parastatal to a company linked to controversial business tycoon Kudakwashe Tagwirei.

Petrotrade Zimbabwe (formerly National Oil Company of Zimbabwe (NOCZIM) is a trading company responsible for downstream activities, including selling petroleum products and lubricants through bulk sales and service stations.

In March this year Minister of Energy and Power Development Soda Zhemu suspended the entire board of the company and instituted investigations into what he called ‘corporate governance issues’.

Appointed last year, the board included former opposition MDC Alliance legislator Lilian Timveos, who defected to Zanu-PF. Chinyoka was the chairman and deputised by Zanele Dube. Other board members included Simba Mhuriro, Gladys Mumhure, Ferida Matambo, Lilian Timveos, Getrude Marabada and Godfrey Ncube.

“While the Board of Directors for Petrotrade was appointed in terms of Section 11 of the Public Entities Corporate Governance Act, with the concurrence of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, I have today, 9 March 2022 suspended the entire Board, pending investigations into matters of corporate governance,” Zhemu said.

“I will be appointing a team to look into the matter, whose findings will inform the way forward,” the Minister added.

Chinyoka however is not hanging around for the so-called ‘investigations and resigned last week on Wednesday (3 August 2022), the same day Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa was addressing journalists at a post cabinet briefing in Harare and confirming the sale of Petrotrade and Genesis.

“Cabinet considered an update on the partial privatisation of Petrotrade as presented by the Minister of Energy and Power Development, Honourable Zhemu Soda,” Mutsvangwa said.

“The nation will recall that Cabinet in 2019 approved the merging of the state owned petroleum companies, namely Petrotrade (Pvt) Ltd and Genesis Energy to form a single entity that would be partially privatized.

“Cabinet also approved Independent Petroleum Group (IPG) as the prospective strategic partner to the merged petroleum company, subject to successful negotiations.

Sources told Nehanda Radio Chinyoka claimed his decision was to allow the shareholder to be in a position to immediately constitute a new board of directors to supervise both the recruitment of an Acting Chief Executive Officer and the partial privatisation of the parastatal which Chinyoka was heavily opposed to.

Chinyoka has also made it clear he does not wish to be considered for re-appointment to the board.

In a High Court application (filed in March) challenging his suspension by the Minister, Chinyoka revealed that over US$103,3 million was corruptly squandered at Petrotrade before the board of directors he chaired was suspended.

Sources who spoke to Nehanda Radio claim Chinyoka was elbowed out after opposing the selling of Petrotrade for only US$37 million to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ally, the business tycoon Tagwirei.

Chairperson of the Public Service Commission, Dr.

Mayor of Harare, His Worship, Cllr. J. Mafume;

Senior Government Officials;

Your Excellencies, Members of the Diplomatic Corps;

Our esteemed Traditional Leaders;

Fellow Zimbabweans in the Diaspora;

Ladies and Gentlemen;

Comrades and Friends.

It is my singular honour and privilege to be addressing you all, at this Forty-Second commemorations of our National Heroes Day. This day reminds us that we are not an ordinary people; neither are we an ordinary nation. Our collective ancestry has engrained in us, the resilient and warrior spirit of our forebears, who were ingenious innovators, builders, explorers, enterprising traders and yes, gallant fighters.

Equally, ours is a nation born out of the sweat and blood of our forbearers, which generation after generation continues to flow beneath our sacred land. From under our feet that blood shall forever water and replenish our resolve to take on any enemy and challenge now and in the future. As we converge at this sacred National Shrine, we therefore stand emboldened by the spirit of our heroes to bravely face, head-on, those who seek to do harm to our people and beloved motherland, Zimbabwe.
Our history is one of deep seated patriotism, perseverance and ultimately victory. We never give up; we never surrender.
Zimbabwe has come a long way as a nation born out of a protracted armed liberation struggle, and we have scored victory upon victory since the attainment of our hard won Independence in 1980. Today, we stand tall among the liberated and independent peoples of the world, as masters of our own destiny.

We are marching on and consolidating our unity, peace and freedom in fulfilment of the collective aspirations and vision of our heroes and heroines. Yester-year gallant men and women selflessly chose to join the liberation struggle against the oppressive colonial white settler regime. Forty two years after the raising of our sacred National Flag, we remain motivated to ultimately transform Zimbabwe into a modern, industrialised and prosperous society.
From Plumtree to Mutare, from Zambezi to Limpopo, let us all draw from that rich liberation war heritage and harness our collective energy and skills for a higher quality of life for our people, right from the community level. This is what our heroes envisioned; this is what we are achieving, brick by brick, stone upon stone.

As the Second Republic, we are committed to giving a wholistic account of our country’s long war of liberation. We are therefore rising to the occasion and recognising other heroes and heroines such as the late Reverend Ndabaningi Sithole and the late Cde James Chikerema for their historical contributions, despite their areas of weaknesses, with regards to the observance of the correct line of the Revolution. For that reason, we now honour them among the list of our national heroes and heroines. We forever remain indebted to all the heroes and heroines of our great country for the freedom, democracy and independence we enjoy to this day. Their sacrifices will never die. Tinovatenda, Siyababonga.

Fellow Zimbabweans;
Our resolute efforts and evident success in fighting the COVID-19 scourge, have allowed us once again to gather and celebrate national events across the length and breadth of our nation. While we remain vigilant, I urge us to direct our focus on accelerating the implementation of economic development programmes and projects as we march towards Vision 2030.

In spite of the various shocks, our economy has transitioned from recovery to a phase of growth, with 4.6% projected economic growth for 2022. This trajectory is anchored by the mining, manufacturing, construction and tourism sectors. The onus rests with every individual and corporate to protect our economy from saboteurs and currency manipulators.

The people of our great country shall forever be one with their land. The Second Republic which I lead will forever honour the heroes and heroines of this great country.
Present day detractors and looters, in whatever guise, will never ever steal or separate us from our God given land. The Land Reform is irreversible.

The broad array of programmes by my Government to enhance production and productivity in the agriculture sector is seeing the emergence of new categories of heroes and heroines in this sphere. The
Pfumvudza/Intwasa Programme will not stop and remains ongoing with the number of beneficiaries increasing from 1.8 million to 3 million households.

Inspired by the resilient spirit of yester-year heroes, let us continually strive to produce all the food we eat to guarantee our dignity as an independent people. No Zimbabwean should be subjected to abuse and ridicule by subversive NGOs on the pretext of food aid.

The policy of taking development and services to the people shall remain the hallmark of my Administration. Sector by sector, ward by ward, district by district the Second Republic is implementing policies that are lifting our people out of poverty and into prosperity.

Fellow Countrymen and Women;
The country is on course to realise the target of a US$12 billion sector by 2023. Mining houses have been directed to always ensure that our communities benefit from the exploitation of mineral resources in their vicinity. After all, the heroes and heroines we are remembering today fought for the land as well as that which is under it.

The unprecedented rate of expansion of the mining sector, together with increased capacity utilisation in the manufacturing sector, increasing urbanisation and the modernisation of our rural areas has resulted in the growing demand for energy.
In line with these new realities, my Government is determined to broaden the country’s energy generation and distribution mix. As we do so, no one and no place will be left behind in our integrated development agenda.

The rehabilitation and construction of key national infrastructure which are critical in facilitating trade and the delivery of quality services across the country’s Provinces and Districts is showing visible progress.

I commend our local companies for their commitment to realise targets outlined in the National Development Strategy. They have certainly become present day heroes in their own right and a reflection of the development that can be achieved by a people who are united and focused.

Every Zimbabwean must have access to clean potable water and sanitation. Significant progress is being recorded in the construction of Gwayi-Shangani Dam, Chivhu Dam, Kunzvi and Tuli Manyange Dams, among others. The Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme, is well under way and will see the drilling of one borehole per village. After all the war of liberation was fought and won in these villages.
Our people at the village level must thus, continue to be endeared to the national development policies as they look at the broad array of projects and programmes within their communities.

All those who sacrificed their lives so that you and I can build a better Zimbabwe, bequeathed to us the dignity of having decent shelter. The increasing urbanisation and ever changing demographics as reflected in the 2022 Population and Household Census, reinforce the urgency of this matter. Resource mobilisation to support various human settlement and housing development programmes are being scaled up.

Fellow Zimbabweans;
Guided by our developmental philosophy of “leaving noone and no place behind” as well as the Devolution Agenda, resources are being disbursed for projects across all Local Authorities. This further unlocks the development potential of our rural areas and creates decent employment and empowerment for our people where they live.

The private sector is commended for heeding my call on the need to take development to the people. This has seen new factories in the rural areas as we accelerate rural industrialisation.
The war of liberation was fought on an understanding of grievances and concerns of the masses. The Second Republic, therefore, attaches great importance to the values of, dialogue, responsiveness and inclusive stakeholder engagement. I, therefore, encourage our people to take advantage of platforms that have been created to facilitate feedback from citizens on the impact of programmes and projects designed to uplift their livelihoods.
The Second Republic is a Government of the people; by the people and for the people. We are committed to transparency and accountability to the people of our great motherland, Zimbabwe.
Fellow Compatriots;

My Government is determined to go beyond the provision of quality, affordable and accessible education for all. National defence is the most sacred noble duty and an expression of patriotism, which must be infused into our education system.

Equally, the principles of hard honest work, patriotism, sacrifice, serving and volunteerism must be cardinal aspects of our education curriculum, across all levels, informed by the vivid fact that ‘nyika inovakwa nevene vayo’.

On the side of education infrastructure, my Government has availed resources for the construction of 3 000 schools across the country.
Deliberate and greater priority will be given to underdeveloped districts such as parts of Tsholotsho, Binga, Kanyemba and Muzarabani, among others.

As a listening and responsive Administration, we will continue to explore new and innovative ways of improving the working conditions of our civil service. Various monetary and non-monetary measures are being intensified for the benefit of the patriotic public workers of our country. Additionally, robust training programmes are being rolled out to inculcate a new work culture that is grounded on our rich liberation and heritage based ideology, which is uniquely Zimbabwean.

Fellow Zimbabweans;
The Second Republic has put in place the requisite institutional, policy and legal frameworks to create opportunities for youth development, economic empowerment and job creation.

I, thus, applaud the youth who are availing themselves for the defence, modernisation and advancement of our great nation. Through the innovation ecosystem that my Government continues to create a new crop of trailblazing young heroes emerging in the science, technological and innovation space.
The invention and production of goods and services for our realities by these techno-preneurs are testimony that Zimbabwe will not be left behind in the ICT driven world of tomorrow.

The arts, creative and cultural industries as well as sport and recreation sectors are other arena where talented youths are excelling. Similarly, our country’s representatives at various sporting and non-sporting events are raising the Zimbabwean Flag high.

Meanwhile, I challenge our musicians, poets and other art and culture practitioners to sing songs, write poems and carve out artefacts of victory and hope, for indeed we are a victorious people and nation with a brighter future.
This renewed sense of patriotism, clarity of purpose and readiness to sacrifice for one’s country must continue to see more and more young people deploying themselves for the realisation of our national vision.

Fellow Zimbabweans, Ladies and Gentlemen; My Government has provided funding for the operationalisation of the Veterans Investment
Corporation. In addition, the registration of heroes and heroines’ dependents is currently underway to ensure that their welfare is catered for.

The restoration and preservation of the complete liberation war heritage, will be enhanced by the repatriation of the remains of the First
Chimurenga/Umvukela heroes, from foreign territories. Processes and negotiations to this end are progressing well.

In line with my Administration’s commitment to uphold the democracy bequeathed to us by our fallen heroes and heroines; Zimbabwe is unrelenting in its pursuit to entrench Constitutionalism, the rule of law, good governance and respect for human rights. The heroes we honour fought for the democracy and the equal access to justice we are enjoying as a country. Let us therefore, individually and collectively, protect it from all forms of abuse and desecration, more so by those who never came to our help during the brutal oppressive years under white settler colonial regime.
Albeit, as a peace loving nation, Zimbabwe, is a friend to all and an enemy to none.

Fellow Comrades and Friends;
The nation may recall that, in 2021, my Government established the following honours; the Robert Gabriel Mugabe Commendation Award; the Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo Commendation Award; and the Herbert Wiltshire Pfumaindini Chitepo Commendation Award in recognition of the sacrifices and outstanding feats achieved by the country’s founding fathers.

We shall, thus, recognise and honour heroism beyond the war of liberation and defence sector. Milestones in science, technology and innovation; the accelerated development and growth of our economy as well as the growth of “Made in Zimbabwe” goods and services are applauded and celebrated. So too are initiatives around cultural preservation and other heroic efforts by our people, both at home and abroad, that raise the Zimbabwe National Flag high.
Befittingly, therefore, I shall confer the medals to four outstanding individuals.
As I conclude, I once again call upon us all to honour our heroes and heroines by demonstrating unflinching patriotism and loyalty to our beloved motherland, Zimbabwe. Those we are paying homage to, fought for our independence knowing no tribe but bonded together by their love for Zimbabwe and desire to see our people free. Let us carry the baton as heroes and heroines of this period, right from within our communities. Every one of us are enjoined to play their part. There can be no spectators.

Divisive elements which act contrary to the values and ethos of the liberation struggle and national interest have no place in our society. Nyika inotongwa, inovakwa nevene vayo/ ilizwe libuswa, liyakwa ngabanikazi balo.

Zimbabwe is a unitary and indivisible country. We are diverse but one people. No countries, institutions, person or group of persons, must be permitted to infuse toxic and alien agendas into our national culture and psyche`.

As we remember our gallant heroes; let us all re- commit to fortify and protect our beloved country, while building on the gains we have achieved in forty-two years of our hard won Independence.
Together in peace, love and unity, we shall surely develop, modernise and industrialise our Zimbabwe.

With these remarks, it gives me great honour and pleasure to wish all Zimbabweans at numerous venues around the country and in the Diaspora, a Happy FortySecond Heroes Day commemoration.

Long live our Unity, Peace and Freedom.
Long live Zimbabwe.

Ngiyalibonga lonke.
Ndinokutendai mose.
God bless you all.
God bless Zimbabwe.
I thank you.

Pfumbidzai Scores Crucial Goal For Chippa United

Zimbabwe international Ronald Pfumbidzai scored his first goal for Chippa United and did his trademark ‘Teacher-Students’ celebration, in the Chilli Boys’ 1-1 draw with SuperSport United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium yesterday.

The former CAPS United left back brilliantly-headed home a Siphelele Luthuli free kick in the 17th minute to give Daine Klate’s men.

Predictably, his did his trademark ‘Teacher-Students’ celebration.

Pfumbidzai’s opener was then cancelled out by Bradley Grobler just after the hour mark.

The match ended in drama as SuperSport United goalkeeper Ricardo Goss was shown a straight red card for slapping Pfumbidzai.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Contesting Meaning Of Patriotism

Konjana writes, “Today marks a giant turning point in my life. I have quit as MDC MashWest chairman. I have taken a political sabbath.”

One source close to Konjana who refused to be named said, “Konjana is a frustrated man after he failed to be mp and the dismal performance of MDC T (Alliance) during the by elections. Under Mwonzora MDC T got zero votes. Then Mwonzora decided not to contest by elections. This has negatively affected Konjana.”

The source further added that, “Konjana was frustrated after Mwonzora delayed to convey ordinary congress to elect new party leaders. Konjana felt that Mwonzora is nolonger following constitution.”

Konjana was Mwonzora’s right hand man. He supported MDC T financially and made sure that Mash West was Mwonzora’s strong hold in terms of MDC T internal factional fights.

Failure to hold ordinary congress by MDC T has caused many cracks within the once mighty MDC T.

In addition, one national MDC T member said, “Konjana quits MDC T under Mwonzora after Mwonzora became Zanu PF proxy. Konjana does not believe in rational disputation approach being pursued by Mwonzora with Zanu PF.” This cements the narrative that Mwonzora is Zanu PF proxy , who was assisted to capture Harvest House (Morgan Tsvangirai House) by soldiers and police during the dead of the night.

Many senior MDC T members have dumped Mwonzora and joined Citizens Coalition for Change led by popular President Nelson Chamisa.

It is a big blow for Mwonzora to loss Konjana towards 2023 harmonized elections and 2022 MDC T ordinary congress.

Konjana was one of chief financers of MDC T fight against President Chamisa during Constitutional Challenge of who is legitimate leader of MDC T after death of President Tsvangirai.

One senior MDC T member said, there is going to be a mass exodus of senior members and other leaders from MDC T soon.

Econet Says: Our Charges Are Too Cheap | TRUTH or NONSENSE?

Listed telecoms giant, Econet Wireless has bemoaned the obtaining tariffs for telecommunication companies saying they are below viable levels making cost of doing business high and compromising service delivery.

Businesses across sectors have generally lamented the challenging business environment characterised by currency volatility and inflationary pressures.

Econet highlighted it continued to record significant foreign currency losses due to the weakening exchange rate which deteriorated by 172 percent for the first quarter to May 31, 2022.

This comes at a time access to foreign currency also remains severely constrained creating further challenges in implementation of necessary network upgrades to assure the continued level of high quality service.

For telecoms – a capital intensive sector – adoption of a scientific and fact-based approach to setting tariffs, that takes into account the movements in the Telecommunications Price Index (TPI) would be a relief for the sector, according to Econet.

“This will allow the group to remain focused on delivering high quality digital services across the country by being able to invest sufficiently to absorb the increasing demand for its services,” said company secretary Charles Banda in a trading update for the first quarter to May 31, 2022.

This also comes as the group is looking at narrowing the digital divide in the country as the rural population has remained largely marginalised in terms of full access to digital services with less than 20 percent of devices in the country being LTE/4G capable.

Said Mr Banda: “The group, with the support of the authorities, would like to tackle this challenge to ensure that digital inclusivity is achieved across all sectors of our society.”

In their quest to enhance efficiency in service provision, Econet became the first mobile network operator to roll out 5G service in Harare towards the end of the last financial year.

In the quarter under review, 5G service was further rolled out in Bulawayo during the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF 2022) and in Victoria Falls as well as in Chitungwiza, bringing the total number of 5G sites rolled out to 22. The business added 100 new 4G sites to improve network and speed of data connectivity.

Despite these efforts, persistent national grid power outages have affected network quality and reliability, thereby necessitating the business to increase efforts to augment power supply with solar power.

There has also been an increase in theft of diesel, batteries and solar panels due to mounting economic challenges forcing the telecoms giant to increase security at its sites to counter the effects of increased vandalism and theft.

During the first quarter, voice and data traffic grew by 6 percent and 18 percent respectively, over the previous quarter. This growth was achieved largely due to customer acquisition strategy.

The telecommunications sector was granted a tariff adjustment by the regulator of 61 percent in July 2022, another 61 percent with effect from 1 September 2022, and a further 61 percent with effect from 1 November 2022.

The tariff adjustments will cover voice, SMS, data and internet services and are determined in the local -State Media

Napoli Boss Reckless Statement On African Players Angers CAF

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has responded to Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis’ claims discouraging African players to participate in the Afcon competition.

De Laurentiis vowed never to sign players from the continent unless they agree not to play in the tournament.

The Napoli boss feels it’s unfair for European clubs to keep paying salaries to such players while representing other interests.

The Afcon was rescheduled to January and February due adverse weather conditions in host nations in West Africa during the June/July period, and the new dates clash with the football season in most European countries.

In a statement, CAF has urged UEFA to take disciplinary action against De Laurentiis.

“CAF is appalled by the irresponsible and unacceptable remarks made by Napoli President, Mr Aurelio De Laurentiis on African players and the Africa Cup of Nations,” reads the statement.

“By publicly declaring that players who sign for Napoli must sign a waiver denouncing participation in the Africa Cup of Nations as a condition of employment, De Laurentiis’ comments likely to fall under Article 14 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations. CAF therefore urges UEFA to initiate disciplinary investigation against him.

“CAF is committed to the role that football plays in Africa, Europe, North and South America, Asia and globally of bringing together and uniting people of different cultures, language groups, races, ethnic groups and religious backgrounds.

“We have no doubt that Napoli and UEFA are as committed as CAF is to these global humanitarian objectives.”

The statement continues: “Are we to assume that the Chairman of Napoli is going to include similar restrictive conditions to players from South America, Asia and other Confederations prohibiting them from playing in their Continental competitions which are important for the development and growth of football globally?

“The African Cup of Nations is the flagship competition of the African continent and one of the leading global football competitions. Its last edition in Cameroon was shown in more than 160 countries and attracted more than 600 million viewers.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

How To Prevent Drowning

Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a call for people around the world to “do one thing” to prevent drowning.

As one of the leading causes of death globally for children and young people ages 1–24, and the third leading cause of injury-related deaths overall, drowning tragically claims more than 236 000 lives each year. To galvanize action and mark World Drowning Prevention Day, the Jet d’Eau in Geneva will be illuminated in blue this evening, accompanied by similar actions in other cities around the world.

––

Former Zanu Pf Youth Leader Calls For Death Sentence For Those Convicted Of Corruption

By A Correspondent- Former ZANU PF deputy youth secretary, Lewis Matutu has called for the death sentence on those convicted of corruption.

Matutu, alongside former ZANU PF Youth League Political Commissar, Godfrey Tsenengamu, previously led an anti-corruption fight against President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s associate Kudakwashe Tagwirei and other senior government officials.

The campaign resulted in their suspension and sanction by the party’s leadership which accused them of violating the party’s code of conduct.

Matutu was quiet since the campaign which saw him being sent to Herbert Chitepo School of ideology and Tsenengamu’s dismissal after refusing to go to the institution.

Sharing on Twitter, Matutu proposed Zimbabwe adopts the Chinese approach to dealing with corruption.

Zimbabwe should adopt the Chinese approach on the fight against corruption offenders with cases that exceed $500 000 should be executed by firing squad with the rest being given harsh sentences #saynotocorruption.

Some of the responses to his post said it was difficult to enforce such laws if government institutions and officials are also implicated in corruption.

Matutu responded saying no one was above the law, “in theory and practice” in Zimbabwe. He also dismissed the view that only members of the ruling ZANU PF were corrupt saying the rot was everywhere hence the need for concerted efforts to ensure a corrupt-free Zimbabwe.

“Gvt Is The Culprit”

By A Correspondent- Jamwanda, a columnist for state-run publication, The Herald, who is believed to be George Charamba, the presidential spokesperson has said the government has been stoking money supply.

A higher supply of money has the potential to further weaken the value of the already depreciating Zimbabwe dollar. Jamwanda wrote:

When Government is the culprit

Seventh and last, the public sector has been stoking money supply. Without going into details and…to Chikurubi ( I am sworn to secrecy!), the State, through its various Ministries, has been discharging into the market more than ZWL10billion a week, through payments, all of them consumptive!

This is hardly surprising: the State accounts for upwards of 75 percent of purchases in the market. I would not have minded if this stupendous amount related to payments for productive activity.

No, all of it went towards consumptive activity. Number One is now seized with the matter and this gargantuan public tongue will now be restrained. Trust me! We who eat masese have nothing to worry. We can loosen our tongues, in anticipation of plenty. Zimbabweans are drinking more opaque beer, after all.

The southern African nation is already tussling with inflation which continues to rise unabated. Government authorities, including President Mnangagwa, blame “economic saboteurs” for the country’s economic misfortunes.

“Play A Clean Game”: Mutendi Tells ED

By A Correspondent- The leader of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC), bishop Nehemiah Mutendi yesterday called on President Emmerson Mnangagwa to promote peace and play a “clean game” in the general elections expected in 2023.

Mnangagwa attended a ZCC service at Defe Dopota in Gokwe, where thousands of congregants gathered to commemorate the death of the church’s founder Samuel Mutendi who died on July 20, 1976.

First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa, Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, top government officials, ZANU PF officials and 16 chiefs were also in attendance.

In his sermon, Mutendi urged congregants and government officials to maintain peace in the country.

NewsDay Zimbabwe quotes Mutendi as saying:

Christ’s peace means remaining calm in spite of all troubles.

I have summoned government officials and their leaders on this day as we are commemorating the day of the man of peace (Samuel).  We are here to pray for the coming general elections. We have the upcoming general elections. There are many people who are going to participate in that race. We, as the ZCC, are also in a race to a heavenly State House. In that election race, we pray that you play your game, as a clean game or race.

We have summoned you to join us to pray for the 2023 elections to be peaceful. Despite the economic challenges the country is facing, we still see that a lot is being done to improve people’s lives. We are happy and we see the road rehabilitation programmes that government is undertaking, and the dams being built.

Mutendi’s speech comes amid complaints from the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) led by Nelson Chamisa, a former Minister of ICT during the Government of National Unity, about the uneven political playing field.

CCC says its members are being intimidated by the ruling ZANU PF and members of the state security forces. The party also claims that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) is preparing to rig the impending elections in favour of ZANU PF.

“Our Citizens Are Yet To Be Free From The Jaws Of Social And Economic Yoke”: United Zimbabwe Alliance

UZA Statement

By A Correspondent- The United Zimbabwe Alliance (UZA) party has bemoaned the “suppression” of fundamental freedoms and rights in Zimbabwe saying this was in huge contrast to what the living and dead freedoms fighters fought for.

In a Heroes’ Day Commemoration message the party pledged to fulfil the aspiration of the liberation struggle.

Read the statement issued this Monday:

United Zimbabwe Alliance Heroes’ Day Commemoration Message UZA applauds the bravery, patriotism and sacrifice made by Zimbabwe’s heroes and heroines in the liberation struggle which saw our beautiful nation attain its independence on April 18 1980.

On this very important day, we recognize and salute the tenacity of the thousands of people who died so that the national dream could live again.

UZA stands proud on our heroes’ and heroines’ shoulders, and we do not take for granted their sacrifice for a better Zimbabwe.

Our party honors these gallant sons and daughters for their heroism and daring nerve in fighting repression and subjugation.

There is no illusion that the war veterans both living and departed envisioned a democratic Zimbabwe whose citizens would enjoy the one man one vote among a host of other fundamental human rights.

The contribution of the likes of Leopold Takawira, Jason Ziyapapa Moyo, Herbert Chitepo, Josiah Magarna Tongogara, Rogers Alfred Nikita Mangena, Dr Joshua Nqabuko Nkomo, Dr Samuel Parirenyatwa, John Landa Nkomo, Rtd General Solomon Mujuru and Dr Vengai Muzenda among a host of others sacrificed their lives for an independent Zimbabwe.

It is however sad to note that the blood and suffering of our gallant sons and daughters has to date not brought about the envisioned freedoms.

Our biggest regret is that while we attained political independence, our citizens are yet to be free from the jaws of social and economic yoke.

The majority of our people are wallowing in economic slavery which has seen most people failing to put food on the table.

Zimbabwean citizens have been reduced to paupers in their own land.

The liberation struggle has remained unfinished business more than 4 decades later.

We doubt if the departed would be proud of what has become of the country for which they waged a brutal and protracted war.

The collective national aspiration for a better life for all Zimbabweans has remained a dream.

Even the living war veterans have raised the flag that the current status of affairs in the country is not what they fought for.

Our great nation has been reduced to a nation of vendors where even our graduates are selling airtime for a living.

The soaring unemployment rate has pushed thousands into the diaspora while the remaining workers are poorly renumerated and failing to afford a decent standard of life.

People’s pensions have been eroded by inflation and cannot sustain their living.

Poverty is reeling its ugly head within communities, a development which has seen thousands of youths taking up drugs.

Crime rates have soared amid a deteriorating economic environment.

Corruption has become a national tragedy which has brought our nation on its knees.

Our health care system is now a sorry state with limited personnel and inadequate apparatus and dilapidated and outdated infrastructure.

State institutions have been captured to push political agendas

.The United Zimbabwe Alliance (UZA), as the government in waiting, pledges to fulfil the liberation aspirations through upholding the rule of law and promoting transparency and accountability.

As we reflect on this very important day, it is key that we redirect ourselves and realign ourselves to the aspirations of why we went to war.

Our liberation ethos was clear that majority rule would see a prosperous and inclusive nation. Zimbabweans deserve better.

Happy Heroes Day!

UZA was launched in March this year with the leader, Elisabeth Valerio, a businesswoman declaring her interest to run for the presidency in 2023.

Passengers Rob Motorist Of New Car

By A Correspondent- An unnamed motorist was robbed of his unregistered vehicle by four passengers whom he had offered a lift along Second Street in Harare.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said Glendale police were investigating the case.

Reads the police statement:

Police in Glendale are investigating a robbery case where a man (30) lost an unregistered Nissan Note vehicle, a cellphone, US$360 and ZAR200 cash, as well as a bag with various clothes to four unknown male adults at the Virginia Farm bus stop in Glendale on 07/08/22 at around 0100 hours.

The complainant offered a lift to the suspects along Second Street, Harare, on the pretext that they were going to Bindura.

Along the way, the suspects attacked the complainant and stole his valuables.

In a related case, a 64-year-old taxi driver was robbed of his Honda fit vehicle by four unknown suspects who posed as genuine passengers intending to hire the complainant to Glenwood, Epworth.

The assailants were picked at Jongwe Corner, Hatfield on Sunday (yesterday) at around 1945 hours.

Cases of this nature have been increasing lately.

Man Dies In Prayer Fasting

BY-Harare man has reportedly died of hunger at a mountain in Murewa during a week-long prayer and fasting vigil.

The now-deceased Emulate Chakara (43) of East View in Harare was discovered dead by a villager who had gone to the foot of the Murewa mountain to relieve himself.

Police in Mashonaland East province confirmed the incident in a statement.
It is reported that on July 27, the deceased and his friend Tineyi Kachiri (47) travelled to Mhurudze mountain in Murewa for a week-long prayer and fasting session.
After two days, Chakara told his colleague that he wanted to disembark from the mountain, but was advised not to do so since it was late.

They slept on the mountain until around midnight when Kachiri woke up and discovered that his friend was missing.
The deceased did not return to the mountain until the following day, prompting Kachiri to report the matter to a village head.
On August 2, Chakara’s body was discovered by a villager at the foot of the mountain who reported the matter to the police.
The deceased’s body was ferried to Musami Hospital where a post-mortem indicated that the deceased died of low sugar in his body.

Mnangagwa Targets Ndabaningi Sithole’s Grave

By-President Emerson Mnangagwa is considering the reburial of veteran nationalist and Zanu founder Ndabaningi Sithole.

Sithole died in 2000 and was buried in his Chipinge home area after being denied hero status by the government.

By virtue of him being the founder of Zanu in 1963, Mnangagwa said Sithole deserved a national hero status.

Sithole was, in 1975, dislodged as Zanu leader in place of Robert Mugabe, then party secretary-general, who would later become Zimbabwe’s sole ruler for 37 uninterrupted years from independence attained in 1980.

As opposition Zanu-Ndonga leader, Sithole found little success in politics post-independence with his political base narrowing down to his native Chipinge enclave where he was MP from 1995 to 2000.

Under Mugabe’s rule, Sithole was at some point arrested and charged for attempts to assassinate his former ally.

Even in death, Mugabe failed to forgive his former comrade to a point of denying him national hero’s status.

Fast forward to 2022, Mnangagwa has inadvertently admitted his former boss erred in denying his allies-turned-enemies the highest honour of the land.

Writing in his Sunday column Mnangagwa said Reverend Sithole was one of the key pillars of the liberation struggle.

One man who looms large in the ranks of early leaders of our nationalist movement, but is not at our National Shrine is Reverend Ndabaningi Sithole, the inaugural leader of Zimbabwe African National Union at its formation, after the 1963 split in the nationalist movement. Whatever his mistakes and missteps later in the Struggle, he deserves mention and acknowledgement in national annals.

Mnangagwa described Sithole as a “leading nationalist, scholar and firebrand in fact gave our Struggle its intellectual grounding and depth” who theorised the struggle.

Mnangagwa said there should be no binary characterisation of people under “good and bad, heroes and villains” when appreciating the country’s past.

Chiwenga Ignores Ailing Wife

By- Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has ignored and refused to forgive his former wife, ailing Marry.

Mary is facing charges of trying to kill the former Army general.

Marry is attending the court sessions despite her deteriorating health.

Last week political activist Linda Masarira said Chiwenga should forgive Marry by withdrawing the charges.

Posted Linda:

Marry Mubaiwa has suffered enough! The inhumane & insensitive treatment to her condition is totally unacceptable. Soko, VP Chiwenga, nomatter what wrong she did to you, Marry remains the mother of your children. Forgive her & allow her to heal. This is too much! #Women4Women

1000 Die In Road Accidents

By- The Police have announced that over 990 people have died in road accidents since January.

Police also said they recorded about 2 500 hit-and-run accidents in the same period.
The hit-and-run accidents the Police said involved pedestrians struck and killed or injured while crossing roads with the motorists fleeing without rendering assistance or making a report.

“We are worried about an increase in hit-and-run road traffic accidents that are occurring countrywide. So far about 2 480 hit-and-run accidents were recorded between January and June this year.
“According to the law, drivers should stop and render assistance, but it is worrying that some of them speed off and do not even make a report to the police,” police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told the Herald.
