“Gukurahundi Victims Need Development, Not Painful Reminders”: Obert Mpofu

By A Correspondent- ZANU PF secretary for administration, Obert Mpofu has said victims of the Gukurahundi killings do need development, not a reminder of their painful history.

Gukurahundi is a term used to refer to killings in Matabeleland and Midlands in the 1980s which resulted in the death of an estimated 20 000 people.

It was carried out by the North Korean trained 5th Brigade which was an elite regiment of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces. Gukurahundi is derived from a Shona language term which loosely translates to “the early rain which washes away the chaff before the spring rains”.

The nation has so far failed to find an everlasting solution to the issue with the Unity Accord signed by Zimbabwe’s two major nationalist movements namely the Zimbabwe African People’s Union led by Joshua Nkomo and the Zimbabwe African National Union led by Robert Mugabe only managing the situation thus far.

Speaking in Jotsholo on Saturday, 28 May 2022 at the burial of a traditional leader, Chief Vusumuzi Khumalo Mabhikwa of Lupane, Mpofu said everyone talking about Gukurahundi was not a nation-builder. He said:

… abantu kabafuni ukuti babe lokuKhunjuzwa izinto ezibuhlungu bafuni intuthuko besiya phambili [people don’t want to be reminded of painful things, they want development going forward.]

Others say truth, justice and reconciliation is the only solution to the matter.

Acting PG Under ZACC Probe

By A Correspondent- Acting prosecutor general Nelson Mutsonziwa has been reported to  the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) by a Harare businessman on allegations of destroying a docket in a case involving a land dispute.

Mutsonziwa, who was the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) during the then attorney general (AG) Johannes Tomana’s term allegedly requested the docket in 2014, which is now missing from the registry.

Chemist Siziba had reported Harare fellow businessman Craig John William Danckwerts to the police after he sold 300 hectares of land to him before allegedly filing fraudulent forms at the Registrar of Deeds offices purporting to be still the owner of the land.

According to the police investigations after concluding the property transfer deal with Siziba, Danckwerts caused the businessman’s arrest after accusing him of stealing his property.

The land in question, located near Harare International Airport, is identified in court documents as Lots 4 and 5 of Arlington Estate measuring 200,0347 and 104,0809 hectares respectively.

The State alleges that sometime in December 1998, Siziba, through his firm Hawkhope Investments purchased the entire share capital of Danckwerts’ two firms trading as Nyland Enterprises and Great-Insight Investments.

Both firms fell under Danckwerts’ holding company Danbro Holdings.

On August 25, 1999, it is alleged Danckwerts alongside one Paul Rijk Peacey, resigned as directors of the two firms leading to Siziba, Margret Siziba and Bernadette Sekai Veteranwa assuming control of the two firms as the new directors.

However, sometime between 2011 and 2012, Danckwerts turned against Siziba, and caused his arrest after accusing him of stealing his firms.

But police investigations revealed that Danckwerts had allegedly submitted a fraudulent form to the Registrar of Companies between February 2011 and May 2012 purporting to be still a director of the firms at the centre of the controversy.

Danckwerts allegedly appointed former Mashonaland East Zanu-PF provincial chairperson Ray Kaukonde, Jeremy Brooke and one Samson as directors.

Kaukonde and Samson later resigned.

According to Siziba, Danckwerts was being represented by Mutsonziwa’s relative the late Arthur Mutsonziwa of Atherstone and Cook legal practitioners.

The matter also spilled into the High Court and all the records are still missing.

Siziba’s lawyer Munyaradzi Bwanya in a letter copied to the police commissioner general Godwin Matanga, Zacc, Special Anti-Corruption Unit, speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda, Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi, chief Secretary to the president and Cabinet Misheck Sibanda chronicled the events leading to the docket disappearing from the registry.

It was alleged that when Danckwerts’s trial was about to kick off before magistrate Sandra Mupindu in 2014, one Mubhawana from the AGs office entered the courtroom requesting the docket on behalf of Mutsonziwa.

“We are also advised that you (Mutsonziwa), acting in your capacity as (Michael) Reza’s superior, personally requested that the docket be brought to you for review and the trial be temporarily stopped.

“This was advised to the court, the witnesses and the complainant at the time.

“Thereafter you summoned our client (Siziba) to your office and ordered him to withdraw the case against the accused (Danckwerts) and threatened to send him to prison,” Bwanya said in the letter.

“The docket has not been returned to Harare magistrates criminal court since March 2014 with the result that the criminal case against Danckwerts is effectively stayed without explanation, our client is left to wonder…”

“Your conduct naturally raises suspicions that you were in breach and continue to be in breach of your constitutional duties and in which case, your continued occupation of that office is not in the public or national interest.”

The lawyer said Mutsonziwa must avail the docket tomorrow before threatening to file criminal abuse of office charges.

Wife Of CCC MP Joins Zanu PF

By A Correspondent- The wife of Prince Dubeko Sibanda the CCC Binga North Member of Parliament Memory joined ZANU PF on Monday, day after the CCC leader Nelson Chamisa addressed a thank you rally in the district.

ZANU PF social media accounts flooded the internet with pictures of the welcome ceremony that was presided over by ZANU PF Hwange District Chair Cde Mathew Muleya  and attended by a host of party members.

Sibanda and his wife have been having been having marital issues which have dragged them to court.

In January Memory accused her husband of verbal and emotional abuse coupled with several threats of physical abuse.

The threats culminated in threats to kill her and his mother-in-law with an axe after the latter and their children had forced their way into the couple’s bedroom upon hearing her scream for help as Sibanda strangled her then picked an axe and threatened to axe her to death.

ED Worried Over Deep Rooted Factionalism In Zanu PF

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has admitted that the ruling Zanu-PF party is being ripped apart by deep-rooted divisions ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Addressing supporters while commissioning three boreholes in Glen View, Harare on Saturday, Mnangagwa blasted some individuals who he alleged were using money to get positions in the party.

The Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme is being supported by Prevail International chief executive, Temper Tungwarara.

It will also be implemented in Chitungwiza as Zanu-PF tries to woo urban votes ahead of general elections next year.

Mnangagwa said Zanu-PF Harare provincial chairperson Goodwills Masimirembwa was struggling to contain factionalism in the province.

“Here in Harare, there is a lot of factionalism. Masimirembwa is struggling to contain factionalism in the province, and we don’t want that in the party. Zanu-PF does not belong to individuals,” he said.

“If you want to be promoted, work hard and we don’t want people who use money to get positions in the party. We are also against land barons. If you are caught on the wrong side of the law, you will be arrested. We will continue to rule this country as we have two-thirds majority in Parliament and nothing will stop us from ruling this country.”

Currently, Zanu-PF members are jostling for positions ahead of the 2023 elections.

The party’s women’s league members are also having a go at each other ahead of their conference next month.

In Buhera South, outspoken MP Joseph Chinotimba is feeling the heat after party supporters organised a demonstration to unseat him early this month, accusing him of denigrating Mnangagwa.

Chinotimba, who was a fervent supporter of the late former President Robert Mugabe, courted the ire of Zanu-PF activists after a video leaked onto social media platforms in which he accused Mnangagwa of plotting to remove him from his constituency in favour of a local businessman, Ngonidzashe Mudekunye.

The demonstrations, however, fizzled out after police cordoned off the area and reports surfaced that Chinotimba had apologised to Mnangagwa.

Masimirembwa told NewsDay that factionalism would not be tolerated in the party.

“What his Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa said was very clear that factionalism will not be tolerated in the party, and we are going to ensure that it ends. We will move as a united party. Factionalism is going to be a thing of the past,” Masimirembwa
said.

In his Saturday address, Mnangagwa also blasted some non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for “working with Western countries to destabilise the country”.

“We need to have food security in the country as you can see that we have initiated various government irrigation schemes. The second republic has brought a lot of changes in the country and we are creating employment for a lot of youths in various sectors,” he
said.

“As a country, we are making sure that we have food security because we are constructing a lot of dams. You can never suppress our country because we are a united front. We are aware of NGOs that are being used by the Americans to destabilise the country.”

“Allow Diaspora Vote”: Jacob Mudenda

By A Correspondent- Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda has said the Zimbabwean Constitution should be amended to allow people in the diaspora to vote.

He has become the first senior official in the ruling ZANU PF party to push that agenda as the party has previously said it will only consider allowing the citizens in the diaspora to vote if western powers remove the sanctions they imposed on Zimbabwe at the turn of the millennium.

Speaking while addressing legislators and other stakeholders at a workshop on the Electoral Amendment Bill in Kariba on Sunday, Mudenda said:

Amendments to the Electoral Act should clearly specify the procedures and mechanisms for registration and voting for citizens in the diaspora.

The regulatory body (ZEC) can play a role through robust political voter education. However, ultimately the conduct of political parties themselves will determine a positive outcome because they wield an enormous influence on their supporters. Currently, there are no enforcement provisions on the code of conduct and the political parties continue to violate the code with impunity.

ZEC should be empowered through the Electoral Act to censure, or even disqualify political parties or candidates that act with impunity during the electoral processes. There is need to amend the Constitution to encapsulate the diaspora vote.

NewsDay further quotes Mudenda as expressing concern over the protection of the secrecy of the ballot.

He suggested:

a). the amendment to the law could include hashing of some fields like identity number, date of birth, and the voter’s address which should lead to the generation of scanned copies from the printed copy.

b). the closure of the voters roll should have reasonable timelines which should be provided for in the Electoral Law.

c). the withdrawal of contesting candidates – the law should provide for the timeframe regarding the withdrawal in relation to parliamentary and local authority elections.

d). the electoral law should define the scope of who qualifies for postal voting in a more elastic manner.

Meanwhile, ZESN has stated that about 83.52% of Zimbabweans are ignorant of the constituency delimitation exercise because Electoral Act provisions do not allow citizens’ participation.

Zim Youngsters Die In Polokwane Accident

A young Zimbabwean couple based in Cape Town, South Africa, and a friend died last week in an accident which occurred just outside Polokwane in South Africa’s Limpopo province.

The couple, Wendy Nyarota (23) and her husband Gabriel Gororo (27), were driving to their home in Cape Town from Zimbabwe when their vehicle went over a bridge in unclear circumstances.

Family members said Gororo was coming from Mt Darwin, where he had gone to pay outstanding lobola to his in-laws.

He left Zimbabwe on Friday May 20 after the lobola ceremony together with his brother Josiah (32), and stopped over in Masvingo to pick a friend before proceeding to the border.

It is said the friend was the one driving the car when the accident happened. He died on the spot, while Wendy and Gabriel died a few days later. Josiah is still in critical condition in hospital.

Wendy and Gabriel left behind a young child who had stayed behind in Cape Town.

Wendy’s uncle, former Daily News editor Geoff Nyarota, said the family was still in shock and grief over the loss of their loved ones.

“It is extremely painful when our young generation die in their quest for a meaningful existence in distant lands, when they should be living happily and holding good jobs in our own Zimbabwe,” he said.

Doves Body Mix-Up- Nyanga Man Finally Buried

By-After the remains of Maxwell Chimwamurombe, which had earlier been jointly buried with the body of a pauper following a mix up by Doves Funeral Services (DFS) 14 months ago, were finally interred at his rural home yesterday. The remains were initially buried at Granville Cemetery in Harare in a bizarre incident that shocked the nation.
Citing Covid-19 regulations which barred body viewing back then, the funeral service concern buried a coffin that was stuffed with body bags and plastics instead of Maxwell’s remains.
Yesterday, a sombre atmosphere engulfed Matoropito Village under Chief Katerere in Nyanga as mourners gathered to pay their last respects.
Friends and relatives sobbed when Doves Funeral Services finally delivered the correct remains confirmed through Deoxyribonucleic Acid tests (DNA).
Addressing mourners as her brother’s coffin was being lowered into the grave, the late Maxwell’s sister — Memory Chimwamurombe — who was the policyholder said: “Finally my brother is at peace, his spirit has rested, and it’s been a long journey. Whatever happened I will now leave it to God.”
Community leaders who spoke to The Sunday Mail said the funeral assurance company had disrespected them by not sending a representative to address mourners.
Matoropito Village Headman, Mr Joseph Chitambara, said the company had inflicted more pain on the community which expected the funeral services provider to shed light on the mistakes that caused the initial burial boob.
“We thought they would send someone to at least give a word of comfort to the bereaved family, instead they dispatched a driver. “Everyone here is not happy. As traditional leaders, we had issues we needed to iron out with them before burial.”
However, the Chimwamurombe family acknowledged that Doves Funeral Services provided the coffin and some of the food at the funeral. Family spokesperson Mr Adam Chimwamurombe said he was at peace that Maxwell could finally rest.
“We are glad that he can now finally rest, we have had challenges and some friction with Doves when we were trying to reach common ground.
“The negotiations took long, and after such an experience we just concluded that we needed to let our relative rest after one year and two months,” he said.
He said the family had cleared all outstanding issues with the funeral services company.
Doves Funeral Services spokesperson Mr Innocent Tshuma said the company remained apologetic to the Chimwamurombe family.
“This has been a very difficult time for the Chimwamurombe family. In the spirit of Ubuntu, as Doves, we pray the laying to rest of their loved one, Maxwell, will begin the process of closure and healing,” he said in a text message.
Maxwell drowned in the flooded Nyamombe River in Nyanga in March last year and his body could not be found for weeks.
When it was discovered, it was at an advanced state of decomposition and some of his body parts were scattered on the riverbank.
The remains were reportedly collected in a plastic bag and sent to Harare.
Strangely, the undertaker who was to take the body for burial left with the coffin only containing blankets and body bags.
Some workers at Doves Funeral Services later discovered their slip-up, but instead of informing the family, the funeral parlour buried Maxwell’s remains at Granville Cemetery in Harare, inside a coffin containing the body of a pauper.
Doves faces two counts of fraud . Investigations into the matter are understood to be still ongoing. Sunday Mail

Chamisa Pulls Thousands In Kwekwe

By- CCC president Nelson Chamisa has pulled thousands in Kwekwe.

Chamisa addressed a rally in Kwekwe on Sunday after his successful Binga rally.

In Kwekwe, Chamisa said they would defeat Zanu PF in next year’s elections despite the ruling party’s violent behaviour.

Posted CCC:

Unsurprisingly, the architects of violence, an expression of lack of political appeal, deployed a plethora of shenanigans, to intimidate citizens from attending the rally. Citizens defied & expressed the same bravery which saw CCC defeating ZanuPF in the past by-elections.

Zanu PF Thugs Butcher Chamisa Supporters

By- Suspected Zanu PF thugs have attacked three members of the CCC in Kwekwe.

CCC announced this on Twitter Sunday:

Three (3) people were injured after the Zanu PF thugs attacked our members soon after today’s Kwekwe victory celebration rally. We continue to condemn any violent behaviour by members of Zanu PF, particularly those from the Midlands province. The perpetrators must face justice

Soldiers Raid Maize Laden Trucks

By- The Zimbabwean government has deployed soldiers and other state security organs to raid and seize grain from individuals, farmers and other players even at roadblocks and deliver it to the Grain Marketing Board (GMB).

The Standard reports that Lands and Agriculture ministry permanent secretary John Bhasera last week raised concern over low deliveries to the GMB before calling on the parastatal to engage state security services to raid players suspected to be hoarding maize.

In a memo to the GMB chief executive officer Rockie Mutenha dated May 24, 2022, John Bhasera said only 5000 metric tonnes (MT) has been delivered to GMB out of an estimated 30 000 MT. Bhasera said:

You are, therefore, required to operationalise the provisions of Statutory Instrument (SI) 145/19 in order to prevent and avert the side marketing of grain with immediate effect.

This includes but is not limited to conducting grain busting operations at various non GMB depots, as well as the setting up of permit inspections at various points such as roadblocks.

You are also encouraged to ride on our partnerships with members of the Joint Operations Command in the execution of this important task.

The government gazetted SI 145 in 2019 banning the buying and selling of corn between private individuals and companies, making the GMB the sole buyer and seller of maize in the country.

Humanitarian agencies have warned that more than five million Zimbabweans may face starvation despite millions having been spent on command agriculture to boost security.

Zimbabwe needs an estimated 2.2 million tonnes of maize annually, with 1.8 million earmarked for human consumption.

Last week, the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) said it had purchased 400 000 tonnes of maize from Malawi and Zambia worth US$100 million in the wake of the poor harvests.

Binga A Totally Forgotten Area- President Chamisa

Tinashe Sambiri|Binga area has been neglected for decades by the Zanu regime, CCC leader President Nelson Chamisa has said.

President Chamisa addressed thousands of CCC at the party’s victory celebration rally in Binga.

Binga community has atrocious roads, just like all rural areas in the country.

“BINGA IS SO UNDERDEVELOPED, FORGOTTEN & NEGLECTED.

The roads are vicious and bad.Just like all other rural areas in Zimbabwe..bad roads,no networks,no schools, no hospitals & poverty everywhere. But the people are loving.

The MPs are trying their best. My heart is just sore. Let’s fix it. A New Great ZIMBABWE loading,” President Chamisa wrote on Twitter.

CCC also posted on Twitter:

“Binga is one of the forgotten districts in the country despite its leading treasures in tourism & wildlife resources. The Change Champion in Chief
@nelsonchamisa
pledged to transform
the local people’s lives through a Sustainable & Modernisation Agenda for Real Transformation.”

After Slapping SA With Sanctions, ZANU PF Asks AU To Demand Sanctions Removal

African Union chairperson and Senegalese President, Macky Sall has accepted ZANU PF demands to re blast the ZANU PF sanctions song.

Speaking in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, where he was attending two AU Extraordinary Summits, Sall spoke of the sanctions imposed on Emmerson Mnangagwa and his clique by Western nations.

He said the military arms embargo was worsening the economic and humanitarian situation in the country.

The AU Extraordinary Summits, which drew several participants from across the continent, including Zimbabwe, President Sall endorsed the regional and continental solidarity with Mnangagwa over sanctions.

The development comes as Emmerson Mnangagwa’s party ZANU PF announced a sanctions bill against South Africa it wants to raise USD10 Billion in compensation from the neighbouring country.  – Agency

Government Threatens To Block CCC DSTV Channel

The government of Zimbabwe has poured cold water on plans by the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) to initiate a DStv channel ahead of the 2023 polls.

NewsDay Zimbabwe reports quotes CCC secretary-general Chalton Hwende as lobbying citizens to launch an alternative television station on DStv, a Sub-Saharan Africa direct broadcast satellite service owned by MultiChoice. Hwende said during a Twitter space discussion:

To launch a truly independent channel on DStv channel you need monthly fees of around US$8 000.

“Let’s do it Zimbabwe — we are left with only 12 months before the election, and so we need US$96 000 and we free the airwaves.”

In response to Hwende’s remarks, Information ministry secretary Nick Mangwana there will be no channel. He said:

“Political parties can’t be given a broadcasting licence in Zimbabwe. The agreement with MultiChoice is that they can only carry licensed broadcasters in our jurisdiction. So guys the US$96 000 is your money, you can give it if you wish, but there will be no channel.”

Private media players in the country have been struggling to get broadcasting licences, while critics say those who got licences are sympathetic to the ruling ZANU PF party.

The CCC party, led by Nelson Chamisa has often accused the State media, particularly ZBC, of bias in favour of ZANU PF.

Section 155 of the Constitution compels State media to provide all political parties and candidates contesting an election fair and equal access to electronic and print media, both public and private.

Zanu PF political commissar Mike Bimha recently advised CCC to use social media to reach out to its supporters because ZBC was not the only campaign platform.

Lawyer Tawanda Mapuranga said although political parties were not allowed to run broadcasting stations, the government was obligated to ensure the independence of the public media.

The European Union election observer mission in 2018 urged the government to reform the State-owned media to fully guarantee their independence and impartiality to enhance the credibility of polls.- Pindula News/ Newsday Zimbabwe

Woman Brings Lover Home 3 Months After Hubby’s Death

A 43-year-old man from Bulawayo has threatened to evict his mother from the family home after she allegedly invited her alleged boyfriend to stay at the family house, three months after the death of his father.

Edrian Chiweshe was reportedly angered by what her mother, Chiedza Chiweshe, did and he wants her to move out of the family house in Montrose suburb.

Chiedza has since approached the Bulawayo Civil Court and sought a protection order against her son.

In her application, she demanded that Edrian should stop harassing her and interfering with her personal life. She said:

I am the applicant in this matter and the respondent is my son. We stay at the same place.

I am applying for a protection order against him. He is disturbing my peace.

Whenever he is drunk, he verbally abuses me and threatens me saying I should move out of the house because it belongs to his late father.

He shouts at me saying I once stayed with a boyfriend at the house which he does not like.

May the honourable court grant me a protection order so that my son stops verbally, and emotionally abusing me and threatening me and also not interfere with my personal life since I am his mother.

She said her son wanted her to go and stay with her sister in Mutare.

In response, Edrian accused his mother of insincerity. He said:

I am opposed to her accusations that I shout at her when I am drunk.

She is the one who provokes me and starts shouting at me.

When my father passed away within three months, she had another man whom she started staying with at the house and this is a period in which she was supposed to be mourning.

He, however, admitted that he shouts at his mother at times, but that happens when she starts shouting at him.

His mother refuted Edrian’s claims and said he should be ashamed that she was buying him food, a whole 43-year-old man.

She added:
I don’t dispute that I had a boyfriend but it’s not true that I started dating him soon after the death of his father and again it’s not true that I was staying with him at the house since he had his own house.

In her ruling, magistrate Nomasiko Ndlovu ordered Edrian not to verbally and emotionally abuse his mother or threaten her in any way.

Real Madrid Are Champions Of Europe!

Brazilian wonderkid Vinicius Junior scored the only goal of the game just before the hour mark, as Real Madrid beat Liverpool to lift their 14th Champions League title in Paris last night.

Carlo Ancelotti’s charges, despite their history in Europe’s premier club competition, were somehow regarded as the ‘underdogs’ heading into the decider.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Curtois produced an unbelievable display in goal for Los Blancos to deny Liverpool on many occasions and was deservedly named man of the match.

Build up to the game was dominated by Mohamed Salah’s ‘revenge’ remarks after the Egyptian ace got injured in the final between the two sides in Kiev in 2018, which Madrid went on to win 3-1.

Salah said as soon as it was confirmed that Liverpool would play Madrid, that he had ‘a score to settle’ but the former Roma man has now lost the Afcon final, World Cup play and now the Champions League final, in what is surely a season to forget.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was disappointed after the game and said his charges deserved more from it.

“After the game when I saw the stats it was 50-50 possession. We had a lot more shots, a lot more shots on target, but the most decisive stat is absolutely on Madrid’s side. Just to make sure that nobody thinks I wouldn’t congratulate Real Madrid, I do that now but I [also] congratulated everybody present and involved outside personally,” he said.

“They scored a goal, we didn’t, that’s the easiest explanation in the world of football and it’s hard, harsh to get anyway, [but we] respect that of course. When the goalkeeper is Man of the Match then something is going wrong for the other team, so we had I think three really big chances where Courtois made incredible saves. I would have loved to have had a few more of this calibre,” added the German.

Klopp’s Real Madrid counterpart Carlo Ancelotti, who became the first coach to win the Champions League four times, described Curtois’ performance as unbelievable.

“Trust me, I can’t believe what Thibaut Courtois did tonight, guys. Unbelievable,” said Ancelotti.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

President Chamisa Bemoans Lack Of Development In Binga

Mnangagwa “Blocks ” CCC DSTV Channel

Stigmatisation Due To Disease Unacceptable

20 May 2022 Statement Geneva Reading time: 1 min (288 words)

WHO and partners are working to better understand the extent and cause of an outbreak of monkeypox. The virus is endemic in some animal populations in a number of countries, leading to occasional outbreaks among local people and travelers. The recent outbreaks reported across 11 countries so far are atypical, as they are occurring in non-endemic countries.

There are about 80 confirmed cases so far, and 50 pending investigations. More cases are likely to be reported as surveillance expands.

WHO is working with the affected countries and others to expand disease surveillance to find and support people who may be affected, and to provide guidance on how to manage the disease.

We continue to convene meetings of experts and technical advisory groups (such as the meeting today of the Strategic & Technical Advisory Group on Infectious Hazards with Pandemic and Epidemic Potential [STAG-IH]) to share information on the disease and response strategies.

WHO continues to receive updates on the status of ongoing outbreaks in endemic countries.

Monkeypox spreads differently from COVID-19. WHO encourages people to stay informed from reliable sources, such as national health authorities, on the extent of the outbreak in their community (if any), symptoms and prevention.

As monkeypox spreads through close contact, the response should focus on the people affected and their close contacts. People who closely interact with someone who is infectious are at greater risk for infection: this includes health workers, household members and sexual partners.

Stigmatizing groups of people because of a disease is never acceptable. It can be a barrier to ending an outbreak as it may prevent people from seeking care, and lead to undetected spread.

As the situation is evolving, WHO will continue to provide updates we learn more.

New Regulations To Operationalise Gvt Directive For Trading On ZSE

By A Correspondent- Treasury has promulgated new regulations to operationalise the Government’s directive on tighter conditions for the trading of stocks on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE).

The government recently said it had identified loopholes in sub-systems of the ZSE believed to be part of activities fuelling parallel market activities.

The Chronicle reports that deficiencies in the systems allowed clients to sell shares and transfer the proceeds to third parties for speculative trading in forex.

Finance and Economic Development Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube, issued Statutory Instrument (SI) 103A last week to operationalise policy measures to stymie speculative trading in the market, especially in the equities and currency markets. The SI reads:

Where a holder of a securities dealer’s licence receives funds in his or her trust account from a person (“non-client”) who is not registered with him or her as a client, the holder shall (whether or not the identity of the non-client is known to him or her) immediately report that fact to—the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) and the relevant exchange.

In accordance with the instructions of the FIU— retain the funds pending forfeiture proceedings if the FIU informs the holder that there is a reasonable suspicion that the funds represent the proceeds of a serious offence as defined in the Money Laundering & Proceeds of Crime [Chapter 9:24]

Or return the funds to the non-client if the FIU informs the holder that there is no such suspicion as is mentioned in sub-paragraph (ii).

A holder of a securities dealer’s licence shall not transfer funds from one trading account to another (whether or not such funds are routed through the holder’s trust account, and whether or not the holder is instructed by any of his or her registered clients to do so), unless the transfer is to a trading account belonging to the same registered client

The move is aimed at clipping rogue brokers that were allegedly involved in third-party funding of accounts.

The new regulations also:

a). require that whenever money deposited in the trust account of a holder of a securities dealer’s licence becomes payable to any registered client, the holder shall pay the money within the trading and payment times prescribed by the relevant authority to the registered client entitled to it and to not any other person.

b). reviewed capital gains tax on shares held for a period not exceeding 270 days to 4 percent in line with the individual maximum marginal tax rate for Pay as You Earn (PAYE). It was previously pegged at 2 per cent and was seen as not deterrent enough to discourage speculative trading in shares.

c). maintained capital gains tax at 2 per cent for long term investors beyond 270 days.

“ED Vows To Deal With Land Barons”. Fact Or Utter Nonsense?

By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa has vowed to deal with land barons who have been illegally parcelling residential and business stands to members of the public.

The issue of land barons has been topical for years with reports saying they get protection from political elites who will be using the barons to solicit votes during elections.

Over the years, hundreds of families were left homeless after local government authorities razed down their houses that were allegedly built on undesignated sites or built on land that had been illegally acquired while some had not been approved by authorities.

The desperate home seekers lose both their hard-earned money and the land they would have bought.

Speaking while addressing residents of Glenview 3, a suburb in Harare, the president condemned land barons assuring residents that no one is above the law adding that those running illegal housing cooperatives will be brought to book.

ZAAC Goes For Mnangagwa God Father

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has launched investigations into corruption allegations involving the funding and procurement of services for the rehabilitation of pumps at Morton Jaffray waterworks in 2019.

The Herald reports that ZACC spokesperson Commissioner John Makamure yesterday confirmed the investigation but declined to give details. He said:

I can confirm that ZACC is investigating issues around the tender but will not divulge any further details.

But a statement, now leaked, from ZACC general manager investigations Mr Peter Zivanayi Rwodzi to the local authority goes a lot further.

It states that there are indications that the issue was discussed in Cabinet through the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works and the Treasury funded the project.

It also states that the City of Harare, the project’s beneficiary, was involved in the rehabilitation works.

ZACC said to assist in the investigations, it was requesting:

a). documents including specifications of rehabilitation work at Morton Jaffray water works funded through Treasury in 2019.

b). details of the consultant and contractor for the pump rehabilitation works and details of the role played by the council in the procurement of the services of this consultant and contractor including copies of the contract between the council and the contractor.

c). council resolution for the procurement of services of the contractor and the role played by the Ministry of Local Government on the project and all correspondence between the city council and Ministry of Local Government referring to the project.

d). records of payment to the contractor and delivery notes for replacement pumps and accessories plus the correspondences between the council and Ministry of Finance and Economic Development over funding.

d). progress reports on the project and status report on Morton Jaffray after the rehabilitation works including any benefits accruing to the City of Harare following the rehabilitation works and then any other documents relating to the project.

Norton lawmaker, Temba Mliswa, in March reported Local Government Public Works and National Housing Minister, July Moyo, to the ZACC accusing him of corruptly awarding the US$9 million water pumps tender to his alleged associate, businessman Paul Kruger.

The multi-million-dollar contract was awarded to Petricho Irrigation, which was represented by Paul Kruger in Zimbabwe, allegedly without going to tender.

Treasury released the funds for the deal at the height of Harare’s crippling water crisis in October 2020 after Moyo presented a paper in the cabinet asking the government to intervene.

Along the way, the two suspects attacked the complainant and stole his valuables.

Police are also investigating three robbery cases that occurred on 28 May 22 where three men using a blue Honda fit vehicle (AEV3684) would offer rides to unsuspecting passengers before robbing them of their belongings after diverting routes.

In the first incident, the suspects robbed a complainant of US $80 and a cellphone at around 0730 hours in Borrowdale and dumped her at Ballantyne Park shops in Highlands.

They went on to rob another complainant of a cellphone valued at US$220 in Marlborough at around 0830hours, before picking up another complainant who intended to go to Mazowe along Sam Nunjoma Street. The suspects robbed her of a cellphone, US$10 cash, and ZAR400 before dumping her along Lomagundi Road in Avondale.

In a related case, a man (21) was robbed of an Oppo cellphone and US$760 cash in Harare on the same day after boarding a Toyota Wish vehicle with four occupants at Kuwadzana Roundabout going to Glenview.

Brian Sedze: Pomona Waste Management Saga

Some corporate governance truth we may try to avoid on the Pomoma waste management thing.

People who are in attendance in green are not councillors.
It’s councillors who make resolutions after getting expert advice from those invited and present.

Brian Sedze

The decision is for the council and its done by vote.
Those other people don’t vote!

In board meeting we often invite auditors, engineers and many other experts to present or give expert opinion but they don’t make decisions because that will be irregular. The experts and even company secretary asks permission to speak.Council meeting is same as board meeting.

If you invite 200 people to a board meeting of 9 people it’s only the 9 people who vote because its a board meeting no matter who else is attending.

This was a council resolution and those councilors in red are wholly responsible for the mess and no one else.If they were overwhelmed by those in attendance tough it’s the councillors weakness. If they needed expert advice it was their call to adjourn meeting to review expert advice from those invited or in attendance…even for weeks considering the impact…even time to consult their residents but hey they were just weak or incompetent.

If this was a corrupt deal whoever responsible for the corruption has made the council stew because it is a council resolution and contract binding. They were shrewd by making the resolution valid from the start. And my understanding is capex, projects, jv and investment aren’t management decisions by council decision.

The only way out of it will be if the notice was defective, or there was no quorum, or the councillors had conflict of interest etc not that newly elected councillors don’t want a deal in a council they were not members. The councillors made the ministers job pretty easy to approve….to him it’s their decision. If they were arm twisted behind the scenes it’s pretty tough to prove.

Even in a criminal court this will just fail to sail thorough.Incompetence is not a crime.Reversing this in a civil court tough.Other populist political action will be walking on eggs. Those councillors did the did!

President Chamisa Barred From Attending Chief Mabhikwa Funeral

CCC leader Nelson Chamisa was on Saturday reportedly barred by ZANU PF supporters from attending the funeral of the late Chief Mabhikwa (Vusumuzi Khumalo) of Lupane.

The NewsHawks reported sources at the funeral as saying Chamisa was barred from the funeral to accommodate Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.

Chiwenga is representing Emmerson Mnangagwa and the government at the funeral.

Apart from attending, Chiwenga also donated US$5 000 towards funeral expenses. As a result, ZANU PF supporters have now privatised the burial for narrow political reasons, reported The NewsHawks.

Chamisa, who had good relations with Chief Mabhikwa, wanted to pay his condolences.

He was barred from the funeral soon after his arrival at the Mabhikwa homestead in Lupane on his way to Binga for a political rally.

A NewsHawks source was quoted as saying:

“Chamisa has just been barred from Mabhikwa’s funeral. He arrived here moments ago but was told ZANU PF leaders and supporters have said he should not be allowed to attend.

He is sitting in his car now trying to understand how this could happen.”

A university lecturer attending the funeral told the publication that blocking Chamisa from the chief’s funeral unAfrican. Said the unnamed African:

“Barring someone from a funeral on political grounds is unAfrican and a new low even by ZANU PF standards.

It shows our politics has lost humanity; promotes intolerance and fascist degradation of our society. This is a disgrace.”

Further, the Club refutes and distances itself from a plethora of false allegations levelled against our Head Coach which have been circulating in the public domain attacking his moral probity and rectitude.

Meanwhile, its shoulders to the wheel for all the players, technical team and club management as we focus on achieving our set targets for the 2022 season. Even the darkest night will end, and the sun will rise.

Mavaza: The Great Betrayal Of ED’s Bevelonce

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | The police must make sure that President Mnangagwa’s marching order to go after commodity hoarders and smugglers is implemented.

There appears to be a “shortage” of basic goods which is the cheapest variety in the market but clearly not presented for sale by the shop owners. Products like fuel cooking oil sugar bread and salt just disappeared without trace.

Certain traders are hoarding goods on purpose, resulting to artificial shortage that drives the prices up.

Addressing the nation earlier on the President issued a stern warning to all of these syndicates. The president said there was a need to address the issue of artificial shortage. The President asked all the hoarders, cartels and their protectors, to stop sabotaging the country. His excellency told the hoarders that he is watching and they must stop messing with people.”Power sometimes is not a good thing. But I hope I will not have to use it against you. Consider yourselves warned; mend your ways now or the full force of the State shall be brought to bear upon you.

It is now the duty Of all security agencies to unmask the perpetrators of this economic sabotage and our law enforcement agencies to bring them to justice.

Hoarding products is economic sabotage. This must be a non-bailable offence because it is a price manipulation.
Contrary to the aim of this currency fiasco, it has happened a year before elections. It will be sorted just in time for elections as the president has already put up measures to arrest such economical anomalies.

The treasonous behaviour has happened before. We had another episode before auction was set up and Zanu-PF members even summoned Mthuli NCUBE to explain the situation. What is happening now is a total manipulation.

Captains of industry are playing games with people’s lives. They took advantage of the forex auction. After getting cheap forex they show Zanu-PF and Zimbabweans a middle finger by raising prices thereby making the life of common Zimbabweans unbearable.
The whole fiasco is a calculated de campaigning already put in motion.

It is time for the President to abandon good guy mentality to industry. We must go hard on these people without fear of the infrastructure development happening. We must notice that a growing popularity of ED is engaging some slowing down. The CCC is using industrial captains to dent the Growing popularity of ED in urban areas. Popularity of the party is now curtailed by price rises. Barring the policy missteps of RBZ and global inflation due to war in Ukraine we would not be in this situation.

The Zimbabwean industrial Captains have become like American Robber Barons.
The robber barons transformed the wealth of the American frontier into vast financial empires, amassing their fortunes by monopolizing essential industries. In turn, these monopolies were built upon the liberal use of tactics that are today the hallmark of organized crime: intimidation, violence, corruption, conspiracies, and fraud.
It is thus important to look at the Zimbabwean situation in its historical perspective.

In 2017 when ED became president he met with captains of industry they raise a number of issues and one was the accessibility to forex. They assured the nation that they want to retool and produce goods and create jobs. The president as listening as he is provided the funds through the ministry of finance and ministry of industry and commerce. The retooling project was activated.
The initiative of meeting the captains of industry came after there was a rise in prices of goods after removing the 1:1 rate and fuel was no longer subsidised.

To accommodate everyone and introduce fairness in forex accessibility the forex auction is introduced. The initiative brought sharp changes. Genuine businesses got on board and for the first time shelves have over 75 percentage local produced goods. The local content on products started to promote business and employment. Again liquidity was realised.

Inflation falls from double digits numbers. Calls were made to liberalize the rate more and the Reserve bank through Mangudya refused. Because of this refusal there was a sharp visibly animosity between the ministry of Finance and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. Suddenly RBZ could not meet demand to pay winning bidders at auction floors. Prior to that those who were benefiting from auction still peg their prices at black market rate so late of delivery of forex is used as an excuse. The beneficiaries took advantage of the system and milked the foreign currency dry.

In 2022 the slide became prominent before by elections. It became clearer that the Captains of Industry were pushing for Zanu-PF ouster through dollarisation. The plot was simply to starve the masses to rebellion. The same operational mode is being used right now to make the economy scream before elections like what was done in 2008. The regime change agenda is in action and the drivers of the regime change agenda are pushing their agenda without stopping.

Faced with such onslaught on Zimbabwe’s sovereignty Zanu-PF has to be tough and nip it in the bud before it is to late.
The new plan to remove ZANU PF is to starve the country economically and have the masses starve to rebellion. The target of the regime change drivers is to have Zimbabwe on its knees by 2023. This is economic SABOTAGE bordering on the lines of a coup. Even after liberalising forex exchange to find true value of local currency prices continue going up. Banks are sitting on huge amounts of forex but there is insatiable demand for it…why are they not playing ball because they are in dip in it. They are being used to achieve the regime change agenda.

Demand for democracy as we currently understand it, was conceived in the Western world. Its progenitor: technology. The innovations that kickstarted regime change agenda and the Industrial down turn fostered the so called modern democracy and led to the foundation of regime change mantra. They disrupted society, destroyed previous structures, as well as building new ones which are against the system currently in power. Institutions, industry and demography were all to change course and, ultimately, little about life in Zimbabwe was left untouched by the Economic sabotage.

Technological transformation took a long time to feed through to politics and policy. But its diffusion ended up permeating both, ultimately reshaping political representing the culmination of a long debate over the role of capital and rights of workers. There are deep questions around inequality, productivity and regulatory capture. Worries around corporatism are rising and consequently, calls for regime change are becoming louder. We increasingly read and hear about self-sabotage referring to the ways in which we compromise ourselves by engaging in negative behaviours, some of which appear antisocial, and most of which contain elements of undermining either our physical or mental well-being. Self-sabotage behaviour may be obvious to the client but more often or not operates at a subtle, subconscious level, and often needs to be brought to light by someone else, and in most cases, this is a trained psychotherapist or counsellor.

Zimbabwe is facing acts by several political camps disrupting harass or damage the reputation of the country and the ruling ZANU PF. This is more so usually during an electoral campaign. Smear campaigns are a commonly used tactic but in the case of Zimbabwe the tactics are damaging the country’s economy forever.

The economy of Zimbabwe mainly relies on its tertiary industry, which makes up to 60% of the total GDP as of 2020 Zimbabwe has the second biggest informal economy as a share of its economy, which has a score of 60.6%. Agriculture and mining largely contribute to exports. But with sabotage Zimbabwe is getting from regime change campaigners the economy is now limping. Afraid of the infrastructure development happening and growing popularity of ED they are now using captains of Industry to make MNANGAGWA unpopular.
Growing popularity in urban areas is now curtailed by price rises Zimbabwe must act very fast.

An understanding of all of the economic consequences, both seen and unseen, is vital if we are to guard ourselves from this second kind of sabotage. As Zimbabweans let us say No to destructive industrial actions.

Information About Monkeypox

Chiwenga Blocks President Chamisa From Attending Chief Mabhikwa Funeral

Vladimir Okhotnikov reveals the errors of the UN University in assessing the energy consumption of Bitcoin mining

А well-known cryptocurrency market analyst Vladimir Okhotnikov and founder of the Floralia company acted as an expert in connection with the publication of the article University Distorts Information On The Energy Use For Bitcoin Mining? The article is devoted to a study by the United Nations University on the energy costs of Bitcoin mining. According to Vladimir Okhotnikov the report contains a number of significant errors and inaccuracies.

To create the report, the UN University used a simplified approach based only on indirect estimates through the income of miners. This methodology inevitably leads to a distortion of the real picture of energy costs due to the decentralized nature of Bitcoin. The study did not take into account significant geopolitical changes in recent years, such as the ban on mining in China and the introduction of taxes in Kazakhstan. All this radically affected the balance of power in the industry.

According to Vladimir Okhotnikov, the key factors determining mining energy consumption are the price of Bitcoin, network complexity and equipment efficiency. However, these parameters were not adequately taken into account in the UN study.

Vladimir Okhotnikov criticized the UN University methodology of assessing the Bitcoin mining energy costs

The expert believes that one of the key problems of the UN study was the use of outdated information from the Cambridge Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index (CBECI). This indicator is one of the main sources of data on energy costs for the production of the first cryptocurrency.

UNU used CBECI information in its analysis, which does not take into account recent updates to the index’s models. This led to the fact that the obtained energy consumption estimates differ significantly from the real picture,” noted Vladimir Okhotnikov.

The UN University’s neglect of the latest updates to CBECI calculation models was one of the key reasons for the distortion of the real picture of Bitcoin mining energy costs. This significantly undermines the reliability and objectivity of the conclusions drawn in the study.

Experts agree that in order to obtain correct estimates, it is necessary to use current data that takes into account all recent changes in the methods for calculating the leading indicators of energy consumption in the cryptocurrency industry.

One of the key shortcomings of the UN study is the combination of cryptocurrency mining energy consumption indicators for 2020 and 2021 into a single summary indicator.

According to Vladimir Okhotnikov, this approach distorts the real dynamics of energy consumption, “The problem of combining energy consumption indicators for cryptocurrency mining for 2020 and 2021 into one common indicator significantly complicates the interpretation of the results. After all, the total value of 173 TWh refers to two years at once, and not one 12 -monthly period“.

The expert notes that without correctly taking into account the trend towards improving the characteristics of miners, the research results will inevitably be distorted towards higher energy consumption indicators. This methodological flaw also casts doubt on the reliability of the UN University’s findings.

In conclusion, the need for a deeper and more comprehensive analysis of the data is emphasized, as well as the importance of dividing statistics by year to reliably assess the dynamics of Bitcoin mining energy consumption.

ZEC Refuses To Release Voters’ Roll

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) reportedly has refused to release a copy of the voters roll for analysis by independent watchdogs such as the Election Resource Centre (ERC), raising fears that the elections management body wanted to hide something.

Addressing journalists in Harare yesterday, ERC director Barbara Dube said the elections watchdog has made several requests to no avail.

“In conformity with section 21 of the Electoral Act, ERC requested electronic copies of the current voters roll and the roll that were used for the parliamentary by-elections. To date, ERC has not been provided with the electronic copies of either the current voter roll that were used for the March 26 by-elections,” Dube said.

Zec chief elections officer Uitloile Silaigwana requested questions in writing when contacted for comment, but had not yet responded by yesterday evening.

Zec spokesperson Jasper Mangwana was not picking calls.

However, the ERC said it was forced to analyse a publicly available voters roll following Zec’s refusal and unearthed a number of irregularities.

Some of the irregularities include deletion of 98 414 registered voters from 16 constituencies who appeared in the 2018 voters roll and creation of additional polling stations under unclear circumstances.

“There is no explanation why there were more than 98 000 people deleted from the voters roll,” ERC programmes manager Solomon Bobosibunu added.

“We have also had incidents of some people claiming that their names have been deleted from the voter roll yet they are still alive.

“Without Zec having explained to us why it deleted those people from the roll, we remain with those speculative reasons on why it deleted them.”

Early this year, Zec triggered a storm after announcing plans to remove 35 085 names of deceased persons from the voters roll, two months after identifying only 22 000 deceased voters on the roll.

An ERC analysis shows that there are 75 524 electorates who are registered to vote at the same polling station on the voters roll, but also registered at different polling stations. ERC said the problem was prevalent in urban polling areas.

The analysis also exposed how registrants who appearing at different polling locations on the 2022 voter roll, but their addresses did not change.

“In some cases, there may be explanations for issues identified and in others, there may be steps that can be taken to address these issues in advance of the major electoral events including the 2023 harmonised elections,” Dube said.

“ERC will continue to request Zec to provide official periodic and timely copies of the voter roll at important junctures (including the end of both phases of the voter registration blitz), at the commencement of the delimitation of boundaries.”

Other election watchdogs, which include Team Pachedu, have also unearthed similar irregularities on the voters roll.

But Zec disowned the voter roll that was being analysed, claiming that the document was obtained without following procedures and was heavily tampered with to discredit the country’s electoral processes.

Pomona Deal Exposes Harare City Councillors

By A Correspondent- The names of the Harare City councillors involved in the controversial Pomona waste management deal which will see residents forking out US$22 000 per day have been revealed.

The controversial deal between Netherlands-based Geogenix BV and Harare City Council (HCC) will run for 30 years, with the company set to pocket over US$240 million.

The deal has caused a public outcry with the Zimbabwe Human Rights Association yesterday also petitioning the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission to probe the agreement.

NewsDay Weekender yesterday obtained minutes revealing the names of the councillors and HCC officials as well as government officials who gave the deal the nod at a council meeting on February 28 this year.

Councillors Tracy Chagaresango (ward 3), Eugenia Chipfiwa (ward 2), Loveness Gomba (ward 36), Mercy Kasvosve (ward 20), Tendai Katsaria (ward 1) and Joseph Kunashe (ward 33) attended the meeting.

Others were Theresa Manase (ward 22), Patson Tafadzwa Mangwiro Chikwaka (ward 12), Tendai Matafi (ward 29), Martin Matinyanya (ward 4), Brian Matione (ward 13), Tichaona Mhetu (ward 15), Midia Mudariki (ward 5), Elvis Ruzani (ward 42), Adonia Shoko (ward 44), Stewart Wutawunashe (ward 46) and Clifton Zumba of ward 38.

The councillors all belong to Douglas Mwonzora’s MDC Alliance.

But MDC Alliance director of information Chengetai Guta yesterday claimed the councillors were against the deal, but were overridden by government.

“What the people of Zimbabwe must understand is that there is a usurpation of authority that is supposed to be entitled to office bearers with regards to local government,” Guta said.

“When you look at the Pomona deal, our councillors actually had a resolution and put forward arguments that were disagreeing with the deal but that was not taken heed off.”

But Harare acting town clerk Phakamile Moyo in his opposing affidavit to a High Court application by Harare North legislator Allan Markham seeking a review of the Pomona deal said the councillors agreed with the deal.

“I must state that the applicants are crying more than the bereaved. The councillors who should have been complaining about any inadequacies in the notices given have not complained. In other words, they were happy with the notices given, had enough time to prepare and attend the meeting,” Moyo submitted.

“I submit that there was no deviation from procedure and even if there was the same was not material. The councilors attended the meeting and were able to discharge the business of that meeting.”

Markham has cited the council, Local Government minister July Moyo, Harare deputy mayor Stewart Mutizwa, Harare mayor Jacob Mafume, the acting town clerk and Geogenix BV as respondents.-newsday

Bogus Army Recruitment Agent Nabbed

Another fake recruitment agent who duped prospective army recruits was arrested yesterday by the Zimbabwe National Army Military Police with the army stressing that it neither uses any agents nor third parties in its recruitment and does not charge fees.

The alleged bogus agent, Emmaculanni Chimombe , alias Lieutenant George, was apprehended after he duped his victims of money under the guise that he will facilitate their recruitment into the army.

ZNA Director of Public Relations, Colonel Alphios Makotore, confirmed the arrest and warned members of the public to be wary of bogus recruitment agencies saying the ZNA does not recruit through third parties neither does it charge a fee.

“Chimombe alias Lieutenant George duped Brian Ncube of US$140 and Victor Hanembuya of US$135 after promising them that he could facilitate their recruitment into the ZNA. Chimombe would collect various amounts of cash from his victims after misrepresenting himself as a recruiting officer based at Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks,” said Col Makotore in a statement.

“More individuals are said to have fallen prey to Chimombe who was using his accomplices to link up with many unsuspecting job seekers in Buhera.”

He said four victims had come forward to register their complaints against Chimombe and more were still expected.

“Chimombe was arrested after a tip off from Ncube and Hanembuya who became suspicious as he was being evasive on the promises he had made to them. On being apprehended, Chimombe implicated some of his accomplices who are still at large. Investigations to bring his accomplices to book are still ongoing.

“The ZNA would like to commend and applaud Ncube and Hanembuya for reporting the bogus recruiting agent,” Col Makotore said.

The ZNA, he said, is concerned that members of the public continue to fall prey to bogus recruitment agents despite making it clear that the ZNA does not engage third parties as recruitment agents nor does it charge a fee for anyone to join the                                                                        army.

“All suspicious characters must be reported to the Zimbabwe Military Police on the following hotline numbers: 0712842318, 0772258410 or the nearest ZRP station or nearest military camp. The ZNA requests members of the public to report before they become victims,” Col Makotore said.

Last week, ZNA confirmed the arrest of Tsikwa Chitepo by the police.

Allegations against Chitepo was that he used social media to lure potential recruits after misrepresenting that he was a soldier.

He misrepresented to his would be victims that he was a ZNA recruitment agent responsible for the recruitment of new members into the army.

Col Makotore said the army was worried about the proliferation of these scams, despite having conducted a number of awareness campaigns warning the public that there were no recruiting agents and the military did its recruitment directly and openly.-statemedia

“Thank You Rallies ” Should Be Held in Hard to Win Constituencies

….. _and_ _should_ _be_ _addressed_ _by_ _party_ _Presidents_

By Tinashe Gumbo
_Introduction_

“Thank you” can be an incredibly powerful pair of words, especially if the person you are thanking really needs to hear them, or is not expecting them (Dr. Laura Trice, 2014). They may appear to be ordinary words that are casually pronounced in our daily life.

Socially, to be thanked is to be appreciated, motivated to do more and to be connected to the originator of the words. Yet, in politics, these two words, come with the power to change the entire outlook of a particular politician and his or her party.

In this short piece, one discusses the significance of appreciating the voter after an election whether one has lost or won. The views expressed here are not politically or ideologically driven but are meant to steer critical thinking on the subject matter from purely academic viewpoint.

The central argument in the article is that a particular election may be over, but certainly, the campaign never is, as warned by the Green European Foundation(2014). Political party leaders (Presidents) should concentrate their “Thank You Rallies or Meetings” in those constituencies not won in a particular election to motivate the resilient local cadres. The article is directly informed by the recently (26 March and 7 May 2022) held by-elections in Zimbabwe.

_Understanding_ _the_ _phrase_ “ _Thank_ _You_ ”

In general terms, a thank you is an act or expression of gratitude. Yet, the phrase “Thank You” means more than just an appreciation of people’s kindness (franciaonline). As young kids learning how to talk, we were taught to say “Thank You” as a way of appreciating the good thing done towards us. We were further told that if one is grateful, more good things will come to him or her. The Malaysian meaning of “Thank You”, Teremakaseh means “Received with Love” (franciaonline). Certainly, receiving something good with love is the greatest act one will ever aim at because, “love is not love until it is given away; until it flows over to others”-like giving thanks.

“Thank You” is not a static phrase like all other phrases about receiving love. It is not just a word. It is a responsibility to pass on the love received. Therefore, politicians should learn to give away their love to those who would have voted for them-through a “Thank You”.

_Political_ _campaigns_ _breed_ _relationships_ _that_ _need_ _to_ _be_ _nurtured_

The Mberengwa West experiment of 2013 taught me a lot. I learnt that political campaigns attract new supporters, friends; sympathizers; sponsors; fence sitters; third party potential voters and others. One further learnt that these relationships need to be kept and jealously guarded, for future political endeavors. During the campaign, the base is enlarged with new volunteers and new members flocking to one’s banner to fight for one’s cause. Therefore, the challenge to all politicians is “remain connected with this base, stay in touch or you will lose them quickly”.

The base needs to be kept informed of the next steps after every election. If there is need to reorganize the party after a defeat or loss, there is need to explain to the supporters what will be going on and why, even when it may be painful. Remember, your supporters share your loss as they share your victory. Thus, they need to be kept close and very busy in between elections.

_The_ _Next_ _Election_ _is_ _always_ _just_ _by_ _the_ _corner_

A politician should not rest and the first step in preparing for new campaign is to thank the supporters and start to reorganize for the next adventure. Of course, in doing so, one has to make an honest and thorough evaluation of the election that just ended. A thorough evaluation can only be made by the people who were on the ground and these are your supporters. They saw it all. They saw the candidate’s strengths and weaknesses and those of the entire party. Without officially thanking them, this process cannot be successful. Another key player who is often forgotten is the hard-working party staff who made one’s campaign possible.

The problem is that once the election is over, whether one has won or lost, supporters are easily forgotten. You just need to thank them. The same campaign machine used, should be utilized for thanking the supporters. Rallies, meetings and social media messages can do the deal to thank supporters after an election.

_Political_ _Parties_ _already_ _doing_ _it_ _?_

I have noted that following the 26 March and 7 May 2022 by-elections, some political parties have already started to thank their supporters. This is commendable. However, it looks like only one main political party is taking this process seriously. The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has held a number of constituencies’ “thank you rallies” in Matabeleland, Masvingo, Gweru, Harare and elsewhere. I was particularly impressed by the level of gratitude shown towards the CCC in Diaspora. The supporters in the Diaspora have remained a critical player in Zimbabwean politics for both ruling and opposition political parties. Indeed, the Diaspora played a major role in the just ended 26 March and 7 May 2022 elections. Moral and material support are key in an election-and the Diaspora chipped in. During the liberation struggle in the 1970s, the liberation movements benefited a great deal from this group of people.

The other parties which contested in the by-elections including the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led by Senator Douglas Mwonzora, the Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front (ZANU PF) and others are yet to openly thank their supporters. The ZANU PF normally does it in a targeted and strategic manner. When it starts, members of its Politburo and Central Committee will be deployed with some standardized message for the supporters. I remember, ZANU PF’s first “Thank You” rally after the 2018 elections was held at Mt Darwin High School-and I am sure you now know how that area performed in the just ended by-elections. The ZANU PF has the capacity to use(or misuse) state resources for this purpose.

The MDC is not yet clear about its plans for thanking its supporters who stood with it during the highly contested elections. Maybe the party will pull out a jocker card towards this process.

_But_ “ _Victory_ _Rallies_ ” _are_ _not_ “ _Thank_ _You_ _Rallies_ ”

I want to discount the notion that “Thank You Rallies” are similar to “Victory Rallies”. These are two different things. I have often heard these two phrases being used interchangeably. “Victory rallies” are held in ward or constituency or nationally, where the party won. These are “show off” events. Supporters will be celebrating their triumph over their competitors. Yet “Thank You” rallies should be meant to appreciate the supporters-whether there was a loss or a win. That is when political leadership of the party should show love to their supporters. Love for the supporters should not only be shown during campaign period, that love should not be withheld because one has lost an election. Remember the saying above, “love is not love until it is given away; until it flows over to others”. Let it flow to those party cadres who showed you love by voting for you even when they knew that their vote was to be neutralized by that of the most popular party in the area. For me, this is the most important vote for the President of the losing party-a vote received from a loving “small” number of cadres. The supporters of the losing party deserve a bigger “Thank You” than that given to the winning constituencies. They have real love for the party and its leadership.

_Presidents_ _should_ _grow_ _their_ _votes_ _where_ _the_ _parties_ _lost_

By the way, for me, constituency and wards “Thank You” rallies should be graced by the local candidates and leadership and not by party Presidents. The Presidents have a bigger role to play where their vote lies. The Presidential vote is “scattered” in those so called “unwinnable constituencies”. That is where concentration by Presidential candidates should be. The few supporters who would have voted for them against all odds, are their true cadres who need to be thanked and protected. A Presidential vote is built cumulatively from the small numbers scored in various constituencies including those where National House of Assembly and Councilors would have lost. Presidential candidates should follow up on those small pieces and bagging them for the next elections. The Presidential candidate should go to those lost constituencies, grow the vote, glow and give light to those who would not have voted for his or her party. The supporters would have exposed themselves by voting for that party hence they need protection from their President.

After the 26 March and 7 May by-elections, I would have expected to see the MDC President, Senator Mwonzora holding “Thank You” rallies in all the wards and constituencies, because his party did not do well. However, those few supporters who voted for his party need to be appreciated. It is not about that “zero” ward or constituency that his party won, but it is hugely about those supporters who stood with his party. Remember those few supporters were exposed to all forms of insults from their opponent but they still voted for the MDC. Senator, just go and thank them.

The ZANU PF should be seen holding such rallies in all the constituencies it lost, to thank the supporters for their resilience. President Emmerson Mnangagwa should visit all the constituencies his party lost. It was clear that ZANU PF was not going to win some seats-it was clear even to the party itself that it was not going to perform better than the CCC. However, there are some cadres who still voted for ZANU PF and this guaranteed the visibility of their party beyond the by-elections. While the National House of Assembly Members and Councillors did not win in those constituencies and wards, still, if motivated the few supporters who stood with the party will vote for their Presidential candidate in the upcoming elections. Without nurturing the urban vote, the ZANU PF will always struggle in those areas.

Equally, the CCC Champion, Advocate Nelson Chamisa should be seen more in Mberengwa South, Mwenezi, Gokwe and Pfura, thanking those supporters who made his party known in those areas. Those 77 strong CCC cadres in Pfura, need to be thanked for the job well done. The Gokwe,Mwenezi, Chivi, Mutasa and Mberengwa South supporters fought a good fight. They worked to reorganize the CCC structures which had been dismantled because of internal challenges in the party (MDC). It is because of such supporters that the CCC is now known in those remote areas. These votes need to be nurtured by the owner himself (Presidential candidate), otherwise the CCC will continue to trail ZANU PF in rural areas.

_In_ _Conclusion_

It can be said that “Thank You” rallies should be targeted in lost constituencies and wards and should be addressed by party Presidents who directly benefit from the “scattered” votes across the country in a general election. The good thing is that “Thank You” rallies are a form of campaign in itself. As one appreciates the supporters, one is already campaigning for the next election. Therefore, these rallies should not be viewed as an extra task for the President. They keep the fire burning and help to protect the few votes received so that they will multiply in the next elections.

The opposition should not aim to match ZANU PF which can afford not to send its President but can still thank supporters materially. The ruling party has the capacity to dispatch its top leadership with some goodies taken from the national basket. The opposition should use the capital that it naturally possesses- the President’s mouth and hands can do the deal by just saying “Thank You” to the supporters in hard to win constituencies and wards.

Mugabe Minister Disqualified Over G40 Links

Former Minister in the office of former Vice president Phelekezela Mphoko and also former deputy Minister of sports  Tabetha Kanengoni has been disqualified ahead of tomorrow’s women’s provincial league elections.

According to sources familiar with the incident  Kanengoni’s G40 links has caused her disqualification.

“Kanengoni is reportedly not clean in the New dispensation and her Curriculum Vitae did not make it on the candidates hence she was disqualified on G40 links allegations,” the source said.

It is further alleged that Kanengoni and the newly elected Mashonaland Central provincial women’s league chairwoman Tsitsi Gezi do not see each other eye to eye and her disqualification has given  the Gezi camp more power since Kanengoni threatened to descend on Gezi if voted into power.

Candidates who made it on the women’s league race are Mutumbga Irene, Dorothy Mashonganyika, Chigwida Maude, Chirongwe M, Shongedza Elizabeth, Muzariri Cloud and Alice Muropa only four candidates will make it to the national league

Former Warriors Coach Mourns Bhamu

Former Mighty Warriors coach Rosemary Mugadza said Zimbabwe lost one of its most illustrious female footballers in Aldiglade Bhamu who died in Harare on Thursday.

Bhamu (34), a former Mighty Warriors midfielder, was the captain of Harare City Queens at the time of her death.

Mugadza, who is the Harare City Queens coach, told NewsDay that Bhamu died at Parirenyatwa Hospital where she was admitted on Monday after suffering a stroke.

Bhamu will be buried on Sunday at Zororo Cemetery in Harare. Said Mugadza:

She collapsed at her family home on Monday and she was admitted to hospital on Tuesday.

She had suffered a stroke on her left side which affected her left hand and leg.

We visited her on Wednesday at the hospital and she was not in good shape.

But those who visited her on Thursday told me that she was getting better.

But I was surprised to receive the sad news later in the day of her passing.

Bhamu was part of Mugadza’s first Mighty Warriors squad in 2003 and also represented the country at the 2016 Women Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. Added Mugadza:

She was one of the two players, together with Rudo Neshamba, who we were grooming to be the next coaches so it’s a big loss for us and the country because she had leadership qualities and we were confident that one day she would become a coach for a club or for the country.

She was a people person and the number of people who have come to mourn her shows she was well-loved. As a club, we have lost a great player and a good leader.

This year she had improved greatly in terms of discipline and she was always leading other players in everything that we did as a club.

That is why we decided to hand her the armband. She was always happy and did her job professionally.

Workers Unions Bemoan Low Pension Payouts

By A Correspondent- Workers’ representatives have raised concern over the low pension pay-outs by the Government, with some retirees getting just ZWL$14 000 after decades of service.

In a letter that has been circulating on social media platforms, a pensioner who had worked for 21 years was set to receive $14 025 after years of service.

This translates to just US$48 using the official exchange rate.

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) secretary-general Raymond Majongwe said the pension payout is shameful.

Former Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president Peter Mutasa called for the dollarisation of the economy to preserve people’s pensions. He said:

Zimbabwe is a failed state; people should understand it from this perspective. It is a state that is failing on all levels.

It is failing to manage the economy and the country has been struggling with high inflation.

The local currency has lost value. The government is even failing to provide public service, so when you are under a failed state; there is nothing that you can do to address one factor because pensions are a fraction of the salary contributions that one has made over a number of years.

Government is not accepting reality on the ground that they have failed. They should just dollarise and make sure that everyone gets paid in a currency that is meaningful, which is the US dollar to preserve people’s pensions.

Chitungwiza Woman Nabbed For Unlawful Detention Of Juveniles

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Saturday confirmed the arrest of Ivy Nyashano (28), in connection with the unlawful detention and rape involving seven juveniles, which occurred between 13th and 24th May 2022 in Karoi and Harare.

ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Nyashanu was arrested at her residence in Zengeza, Chitungwiza on Thursday, 26 May 2022 and will appear in court soon.

On Thursday, police issued a statement saying they were looking for Nyashano. The statement read:

UNLAWFUL DETENTION AND RAPE OF SEVEN JUVENILES

The Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing for information which may lead to the arrest of Ivy Nyashano (No Further Particulars Known) who is being sought by the Police for cases of unlawful detention and rape involving seven juveniles, which occurred between 13th and 24th May 2022 in Karoi and Harare.

On 13th May 2022, the suspect allegedly went to the Chikangwe area in Karoi where she persuaded and convinced seven female juveniles aged between 12 and 16 years to accompany her to the Buffalo Downs area in Karoi on the pretext that she was going to offer them employment as shop attendants. She took the victims to her residence in Zengeza 1, Chitungwiza in Harare.

On 14th May 2022, the suspect started to give the victims beer, family planning pills, among other tablets to drug them before forcing the victims to have sexual intercourse with different men whom she charged an undisclosed fee.

This continued up until three of the victims escaped from the suspect’s home on 24th May 2022 and contacted their parents, who then sent them bus fares to return home and a police report was made.

Parents and guardians are urged to counsel children and ensure that they are not enticed by criminal syndicates to run away from home through purported and false lucrative offers.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police warns perpetrators of such offences that the law will take its course. The public is advised to report such cases at any nearest police station, National Complaints desk on 0242 703631 or WhatsApp 0712 800197

VP Chiwenga Presides Over Chief Mabhikwa Burial

VICE PRESIDENT Constantino Chiwenga is today expected to preside over the burial of Chief Mabhikwa of Lupane at his rural home in Jotsholo, Matabeleland North.

President Mnangagwa yesterday accorded Chief Mabhikwa (28) a State-assisted funeral, and deployed VP Chiwenga to represent him during the burial.

VP Chiwenga also donated US$5 000 towards funeral expenses.

Chief Mabhikwa, born Vusumuzi Khumalo, died at the St Luke’s Hospital on Monday after he was involved in a road accident along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway on Sunday.

Mourners yesterday gathered at Chief Mabhikwa’s family home in Bulawayo’s North End suburb for a brief memorial service before proceeding to Jotsholo ahead of today’s burial.

Among those who attended the memorial service were Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Judith Ncube, Prince Zwide Khumalo, Chief Matupula and business people.

The funeral procession left Bulawayo for Jotsholo shortly after 2pm.

In a statement yesterday, the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Misheck Sibanda, said President Mnangagwa had assigned VP Chiwenga to represent him at the late chief’s burial.

Family spokesperson, Mr Donald Khumalo, said VP Chiwenga gave an assurance that he would attend the burial.  “At the homestead in Jotsholo, we shall give everyone the chance in the morning to eulogise and mourn their chief. This will be done before the official programme, which is expected to start at around 10am with Vice President Chiwenga presiding over the ceremony,” he said.

Several chiefs are also expected to attend the burial. Mr Khumalo said the family was grateful for the gesture shown by VP Chiwenga when he contributed US$5 000 for the funeral.

“We were assisted by the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe, the Ministry of Local Government and the Vice President Dr Chiwenga in his own capacity, who contributed US$5 000,” said Mr Khumalo.

He said they are expecting between 2 500 to 3 000 people to come and bid farewell to Chief Mabhikwa.

Dr Sibanda described Chief Mabhikwa as someone who was dedicated and committed to national duty.

“Following the untimely passing on of the late Chief Vusumuzi Khumalo Mabhikwa arising from a fatal road accident on Sunday 22, May 2022, His Excellency the President Dr E D Mnangagwa has directed that the late Chief Mabhikwa be granted State-assisted funeral. This is in recognition of his dedication and commitment to national duty as a traditional leader and public servant,” he said.

Citing post mortem results, the late Chief Mabhikwa’s family said he lost a lot of blood and that led to his death.

The late chief was installed on May 11, 2012 at the age of 18 and had served the traditional leadership institution for a decade.

Chief Mabhikwa was born on September 24, 1993 and attended Jotsholo Primary and Fatima High schools.

At the age of 19, he attended the Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology and also obtained a Diploma in Information and Communication Technology at Boston City College in South Africa in 2012. He is survived by a son.

In 2019, President Mnangagwa appointed Chief Mabhikwa as part of the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe board, after he was nominated by the Council of Chiefs.

On Tuesday the community expressed grief following his death saying he was a cultured leader who united the community.

His uncle Mr Leonard Khumalo who served as acting Chief Mabhikwa before the youthful chief reached 18 said the deceased had served with dignity.

“I became acting Chief following the death of his father Nicholas. And when he was mature enough to be installed as chief, I stepped down and he took over. He served us with dignity and respect. Although he was young, ubengubaba wethu, umthunzi wethu susithele,” said Mr Khumalo.

He said both the young and old respected him and he was a role model to most young people because of his calm character.

“We are at a serious loss. We expected that he would continue serving the community in the dignified manner he had been doing. We don’t know how we will even handle his succession as he was so young and we didn’t even think we would lose him so suddenly. His area of jurisdiction was so wide but never at any point would he fail to attend to anyone who sought his counsel. As a family we are proud of the way he represented us,” he said.

A village head in Jotsholo, Mr Jabulani Nyathi said Chief Mabhikwa consulted on every decision he made.

He said Chief Mabhikwa was pro-development and assigned traditional leadership structures to communicate to villagers proposed projects before they were implemented.

“After sending us to communicate the proposed developmental projects, he would also request that people provide feedback. That is the type of a leader he was, never imposing on the people but always consulting us and the whole community on developmental issues. He did not want us to lag behind as Lupane,” he said.

A villager and close neighbour to Chief Mabhikwa, Mr Phunyuka Luphahla said it was a marvel to watch Chief Mabhikwa grow as he was a well-groomed child who respected his elders. Mr Luphahla said leadership qualities were inherent in him.

“Even at Fatima High School where I used to work, he was referred to as a chief. This was before he was installed as a chief. This was mainly because others realised the leadership qualities in him. I could vouch for him on any day as he is someone that we trusted as he epitomised respect.

“Yes, we will have someone replacing him as a chief but we will never have a chief like him. We have lost a leader who was understood by the community and he understood the community as well,” said Mr Luphahla.-statemedia

Murehwa South Villagers Up In Arms With Zanu PF MP

By A Correspondent- Villagers in Murewa South constituency are up in arms with their legislator, Nyasha Masoka (Zanu-PF), accusing him of diverting fertiliser meant for them to his own use.

They have taken to social media to accuse the newly elected Masoka of only doling out the bags of fertiliser to traditional leaders.

It emerged that more than 55 village heads were given 8 bags each on the pretext that they will use it next season for the Zunde RaMambo programme.

The fertiliser was distributed to the village heads on March 24, two days before the by-elections, a move that was described as vote buying.

Masoka repalced the late Joel Biggie Matiza who succumbed to COVID-19 last year.

The villagers said they expected the fertiliser to benefit communal farmers in Wards 19, 20 and 21.

“There is a consignment of fertiliser that was delivered at Dombwe and we do not know how it was distributed. There was no transparency.  We hear the village heads were given the bags of fertiliser, and the question is why. Are these village heads the only ones who vote for Zanu-PF,” queried a villager.

Masoka yesterday confirmed distributing the fertiliser only to the traditional leaders.

“This was not the presidential input or the command agriculture. It was for Zunde Ramambo, not for the other villagers. If it was meant for the wards it could have been given to the sitting councillors, not a MP,” Masoka said.

On vote-buying allegations, Masoka said: “Chiefs are not the only ones who vote. Voting is done secretly and people decide who they want.”=newsday

Zim Dollar Collapses

By-Economics have predicted the total collapse of the Zimbabwean dollar.

Renowned economic commentators Gift Mugano and Anthony Hawkins said the Government must accept that the market and re-dollarise the economy has rejected the local currency.

This comes as annual inflation rose to 131.7% in May, from 96% in April, according to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat).

The local currency has also depreciated against the United States dollar on the official market, falling to US$1:$290 by Tuesday, compared to US$1:$258 the previous week.

Mugano projected that the domestic currency will dead by June this year, adding that the Government itself is rejecting the Zimdollar and has opted for the US dollar. Said Mugano:

We are increasing our debt and we won’t be able to defend our currency. Even the Government does not want to use its own currency.

It paid bonuses in US dollars, it is paying COVID-19 allowances in US dollars, and tollgates are now paid in US dollars.

We are not qualified to fight for the Zimbabwe dollar because the Government itself wants the USD.

In fact, the market has dollarised, we are at a funeral, and we are going to the grave to bury the Zimbabwe dollar.

Mugano said when the country de-dollarised in 2019, after a decade of a multi-currency system, the economy was not ready for the local currency. He said:

The strength of the currency is reflected in its productive capacity. You do not go and support the local currency at a rally and campaign for it, you need production.

The second aspect is you must have fiscal consolidation. You must not have debt because when you have a growing debt then you also have vulnerabilities in the economy when the currency is attacked.

Hawkins argued that dollarisation would be painful but it is the only way to tame runaway inflation. He said:

The public doesn’t want to hold the Zim dollar. Yes, dollarisation would be painful, no doubt. But will it be more painful than an inflation rate of 400%?

The opponents of dollarisation will tell you that this is because saboteurs are destroying the local currency. That is not the case.

People are acting rationally, they are trying to protect their livelihoods, they are trying to protect their pensions, and they are trying to protect their savings from the predatory policies that are being followed at the moment.

The exchange rate is a reflection of what is happening in the economy.

Another economist Persistence Gwanyanya, however, warned against full dollarisation. He said:

Every one of us would want some dollars in his pocket now and every business may want to have the economy dollarised, but it is not the most effective currency option.

Dollarisation is costly. The Justice Smith Commission established that we need to compensate about $5 billion for the loss that occurred in 2009.

Right now we have got about $277 billion in the accounts. When we dollarise we need to first convert all those into US dollars or people will have to lose that.

Independent Candidate Chickens Out Of Election Race

By A Correspondent- An independent candidate for the forthcoming June 25 Masvingo West ward 21 by-election, Sister Nhando, has withdrawn her candidature under unclear circumstances.

Nhando was set to battle it out with Zanu-PF’S Chenjerai Mumbire and CCC’S Onias Mawarire in the by–election.

In an advert flighted in a local Daily Friday, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) confirmed Nhando’s withdrawal.

“It is hereby notified, in terms of section 126 (2) of the Electoral Act (Chapter 2:13) , that the person specified below (Nhando) nominated for election in the by-elections to be held on 25 June 2022 has withdrawn their candidature from the respective ward,”  said ZEC ‘s chief elections officer, Utoile Silaigwana. By-ZimLive editor Mduduzi Mathuthu is living in fear after unidentified five men claiming to be police officers visited his Bulawayo home on Friday around midday.

Mathuthu was not present at the time.

The men, who were reportedly driving in a silver sedan vehicle without number plates, did not show their police badges and declined a request to leave their contacts.
The men instructed those present that Mathuthu should present himself to Detective Sergeant Patrice Nyanhete at Office 12 at the Law and Order section at Bulawayo Central Police Station.
However, when Mathuthu’s lawyer Nqobani Sithole later went to the police station, he was advised that Nyanhete was “off duty.”
Sithole also said Law and Order detectives present said Mathuthu was not a person of interest. Said, Sithole:
I’m now more concerned than I was when I went to the police station. If the people at Mathuthu’s house were not police officers and given that they didn’t want to be identified by driving a vehicle without number plates, then it’s safe to assume that this was going to be an abduction and not an arrest.
When contacted for comment, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said, “I don’t have information on that at the moment.”

Police Beat Up Protesting TelOne Students

By- Anti-riot police on Friday disrupted a peaceful protest by disgruntled Telone students.

Armed with button sticks and tear gas, the police violently stormed the students gathered at TelOne Showground premises, intending to petition the school authorities.
They beat up the protest organisers before taking away their cell phones.

The disgruntled students wanted to state-controlled telecommunications regulator to review downwards fees the learners were paying.

The said Telone recently increased the fees astronomically, leaving them vulnerable.

Below were also some of the students’ concerns they wanted TelOne to attend to:

  1. The new tuition fee is unaffordable by almost all the students since many of our parents work here in Zimbabwe and are paid in RTGS less than even 250USD per month

2.Learning conditions at Telone do not meet or match the new tuition fees
i) no wifi or internet connection in classrooms
ii) Poor library without telecommunications resources
iii) Almost 3 quarters of the students are doing online lessons which require an extra fee from students for data
iv) Poor laboratory without standard telecommunications resources
v)Even if you check their circular(sent above) on top it is stating that 01 May 2021 , then again it says 01 May 2022
last but not least the stamp on their(TCFL) circular is saying 01 May 2021

Police Descends On ZimLive Editor’s Home

A number of police officers in Bulawayo on Friday, 27 May 2022 reportedly visited the home of ZimLive Editor, Mduduzi Mathuthu for as yet unknown reasons.

MISA Zimbabwe immediately deployed lawyer, Nqobani Sithole, to attend to Mathuthu.

Mathuthu was not at home at the time and the police reportedly ordered that he should present himself at the Law and Order Section of the police.Sithole presented himself at the Law and Order Section on Mathuthu’s behalf.

At the time of the writing of this alert, the police were yet to inform him on what charges, if any, they wanted to lay on Mathuthu.

Sithole said the police action was tantamount to abusing Mathuthu’s family.

“We are worried about that,” he said. “At all material times, this guy (Mathuthu) has been available and no charges have ever been laid against him.”

In 2020, Mathuthu’s nephew, Tawanda Muchehiwa, was allegedly abducted and tortured.

At that time his whereabouts had been unknown following his arrest which prompted an urgent habeas corpus application by his lawyer, Sithole.

Following the court application, High Court judge Justice Makonese ordered the police to investigate his whereabouts.

Muchehiwa was only found after being dropped off at his place of residence. His other relatives were also arrested at the time.

This came after police officers had on 30 July 2020 raided and ransacked Mathuthu’s home reportedly looking for information on subversive materials linked to the 31 July 2020 protests.

Tonderai Ndiraya Bounces Back

Dynamos head coach Tonderai Ndiraya has been reinstated to his job following his controversial suspension which was received with a wide condemnation last week from the broader football world.

The club suspended the former Warriors Assistant coach last week but did not disclose his offence.

The action was received with speculation by a cross-section of the football world amid claims the football gaffer had fallen out of favour with some members of the Dynamos executive.

In a statement Friday, club spokesperson Tinashe Farawo placed more ambiguity to the reasons behind Ndiraya’s suspension although denying the truthfulness of the speculation that followed the popular coach’s suspension.

“In line with principles of natural justice, the Coach appeared before a disciplinary committee on Thursday 26 May 2022 to answer to allegations bordering around noncompliance with work standards, agreed practices, procedures and agreements.
