Effects Of COVID-19 And Tuberculosis

The COVID-19 pandemic has reversed years of global progress in tackling tuberculosis and for the first time in over a decade, TB deaths have increased, according to the World Health Organization’s 2021 Global TB report.

In 2020, more people died from TB, with far fewer people being diagnosed and treated or provided with TB preventive treatment compared with 2019, and overall spending on essential TB services falling.

The first challenge is disruption in access to TB services and a reduction in resources. In many countries, human, financial and other resources have been reallocated from tackling TB to the COVID-19 response, limiting the availability of essential services.

The second is that people have struggled to seek care in the context of lockdowns.

“This report confirms our fears that the disruption of essential health services due to the pandemic could start to unravel years of progress against tuberculosis,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “This is alarming news that must serve as a global wake-up call to the urgent need for investments and innovation to close the gaps in diagnosis, treatment and care for the millions of people affected by this ancient but preventable and treatable disease.”

TB services are among many others disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, but the impact on TB has been particularly severe.

For example, approximately, 1.5 million people died from TB in 2020 (including 214 000 among HIV positive people).

The increase in the number of TB deaths occurred mainly in the 30 countries with the highest burden of TB[1]. WHO modelling projections suggest the number of people developing TB and dying from the disease could be much higher in 2021 and 2022.

Challenges with providing and accessing essential TB services have meant that many people with TB were not diagnosed in 2020. The number of people newly diagnosed with TB and those reported to national governments fell from 7.1 million in 2019 to 5.8 million in 2020.

WHO estimates that some 4.1 million people currently suffer from TB but have not been diagnosed with the disease or have not officially reported to national authorities. This figure is up from 2.9 million in 2019.

The countries that contributed most to the global reduction in TB notifications between 2019 and 2020 were India (41%), Indonesia (14%), the Philippines (12%) and China (8%). These and 12 other countries accounted for 93% of the total global drop in notifications.

There was also a reduction in provision of TB preventive treatment. Some 2.8 million people accessed this in 2020, a 21% reduction since 2019. In addition, the number of people treated for drug-resistant TB fell by 15%, from 177 000 in 2019 to 150 000 in 2020, equivalent to only about 1 in 3 of those in need.

Global investment for TB falls
Funding in the low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) that account for 98% of reported TB cases remains a challenge. Of the total funding available in 2020, 81% came from domestic sources, with the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russian Federation, India, China and South Africa) accounting for 65% of total domestic funding.

The largest bilateral donor is the Government of the United States of America. The biggest international donor is the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

The report notes a fall in global spending on TB diagnostic, treatment and prevention services, from US$ 5.8 billion to US$ 5.3 billion, which is less than half of the global target for fully funding the TB response of US$ 13 billion annually by 2022.

Meanwhile, although there is progress in the development of new TB diagnostics, drugs and vaccines, this is constrained by the overall level of R&D investment, which at US$ 0.9 billion in 2019 falls far short of the global target of US$ 2 billion per year.

Global TB targets off track
Reversals in progress mean that the global TB targets are off track and appear increasingly out of reach, however there are some successes. Globally, the reduction in the number of TB deaths between 2015 and 2020 was only 9.2% – about one quarter of the way to the 2020 milestone of 35%.

Globally, the number of people falling ill with TB each year (relative to population) dropped 11% from 2015 to 2020, just over half-way to the 2020 milestone of 20%.

However, the WHO European Region exceeded the 2020 milestone, with a reduction of 25%. This was mostly driven by the decline in the Russian Federation, where incidence fell by 6% per year between 2010 to 2020. The WHO African Region came close to reaching the milestone, with a reduction of 19%, which reflects impressive reductions of 4–10% per year in South Africa and several other countries in southern Africa, following a peak in the HIV epidemic and the expansion of TB and HIV prevention and care.

“We have just one year left to reach the historic 2022 TB targets committed by Heads of State at the first UN High Level Meeting on TB. The report provides important information and a strong reminder to countries to urgently fast-track their TB responses and save lives,” said Dr Tereza Kasaeva, Director of WHO’s Global TB Programme. “This will be crucial as preparations begin for the 2nd UN High Level Meeting on TB mandated for 2023.”

The report calls on countries to put in place urgent measures to restore access to essential TB services. It further calls for a doubling of investments in TB research and innovation as well as concerted action across the health sector and others to address the social, environmental and economic determinants of TB and its consequences.

The new report features data on disease trends and the response to the epidemic from 197 countries and areas, including 182 of the 194 World Health Organization (WHO) Member States.

Confirmed: Inmates Seriously Injured After Being Struck By Lighting

Thirteen (13) inmates from Hwange’s Mbalila Prison are battling for their lives in hospitals in Hwange and Bulawayo after they were struck by lightning while they were having lunch on Friday.

Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) national deputy spokesperson Superintendent Peter Chaparanganda confirmed the development.

He said among the injured male inmates, four of them have been transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo because their injuries were severe. Said Chaparanganda :

“On 19 November 2021, a bolt of lightning struck Hwange Prison in Matabeleland North province and 13 convicted male inmates were affected.

The inmates were inside the prisons’ yard and this happened around 11.30 hours whilst inmates were being fed lunch.”

He said initially the 13 were rushed to a local hospital where the four were transferred to Bulawayo due to the seriousness of their condition. – VicFallsLive

Teacher Sues School Committee After Being Accused Of Satanism

A Chipinge teacher who was transferred from Chimana Secondary School after she was accused of being the ring leader of an alleged satanism cult at the school is suing the School Development Committee (SDC) and village heads for $5 million for defamation.

The teacher, Mercy Mutando approached the Chipinge Civil Court on Tuesday accusing the Chimana SDC led by Tafara Sithole, and village head, Walter Mushavanhu, and the other 12 members of the community of calling her a satanist.

Chipinge magistrate, Elizabeth Hanzi presided over the case, while Tariro Tazvitya, of Bere Brothers Legal Practitioners, represented the defendants.

In her submissions to the court, Mutando claims that she lost her dignity in the community as everyone accused her of initiating pupils at the school into satanism.

She said her name was tarnished all over the world because of the allegations raised by the defendants. Mutando said:

My name was tarnished and was all over social media because of the unfounded allegations raised by the defendants.

They gave false information to the District Schools Inspector, police and Chief Mapungwana that I was responsible for the mysterious happenings that were reported at the school.

I was disturbed by these allegations, and my employer had to transfer me to another school since my life was in danger at the school.

In April this year, bizarre incidents took place at Chimana Secondary School, with some pupils collapsing, while some fell into trances.

As a result, three school inspectors visited the school and recommended its closure.

The village head and the community staged a demonstration at the school resulting in Mutando being transferred from the school.- Manica Post

Selmor Mtukudzi Releases Nine Track Album

By A Correspondent-Selmor Mtukudzi, daughter to the late music icon and national hero, Dr Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, has vowed to keep her father’s legacy alive through fresh compositions that carry the departed singer’s trademark touch.

The songbird launched her seventh studio album, “Ndangwara”, at a strictly-by-invite dinner held in Harare on Thursday before the album was officially unveiled to the public the following day.

Speaking to The Sunday Mail Society, Selmor said the late music superstar heavily inspired the nine-track album.
“This new offering is a carbon copy of my father’s work. I am pulling all stops to make sure that we keep his legacy and genre alive,” she said.
She, however, was quick to plead with fans not to compare her with the departed legend.
“To be honest, the shoes left by Dr Tuku are way too big. Many other musicians and myself cannot easily fill them, if at all we can. But, I am trying day and night to match the set standards. I hope one day, through the name of Jesus Christ, I will make the grade.”
The musician said she is aiming for excellence despite the numerous challenges she currently faces in her music career.
Some of the tracks on the album include “Ndangwara”, “Haisi Nyore”, “Bvubvuru Bvubvuru” and “Pfuma Yevana”.
“Female artistes are often underrated. This might be the reason why some people think I cannot fill the void left by my father. I will not say much, but will only let my work do the talking,” she said.
“At times we face changes as we go about our music business, but we simply persevere.”
Last year, she released “Dehwe reNzou”, which received positive rave reviews from music critics. The Steve Dyer Tribe Studio produced 11-track album captured the singer’s feelings and thoughts before and after her father’s demise.
Some of the tracks featured on the project included “Zvine Basa Rei?” the title track “Dehwe reNzou” and “Mandidzimbira”.
Zimdancehall chanter Guspy Warrior has released a 12-track gospel-laden album.
Simply titled “Emmanuel”, the reggae-gospel album has left the singer’s fans as well as fellow musicians puzzled.
“Asi makuita zve gospel here, tibudireyi pachena tizive,” commented one of his fans only identified as DJ Towers.
King Shaddy, his fellow Zimdancehall artiste, said: “Mukoma Guspy, mavakuita zve church, you are following your father’s DNA (sic).”
However, Guspy Warrior told The Sunday Mail Society that the album was a dedication to his father Mechanic Manyeruke, who recently retired from music.
“My intention was to give a warm farewell to my father, who retired from music after over three decades in the industry,” explained Guspy.
“I have no intention of abandoning hardcore Zimdancehall. It is what I love and know best.”
Mechanic Manyeruke (71) said he was appreciative of his son’s gesture.
“I am now tired and need to rest . . . I want to thank my son for showing me this kind of love and honour. It means a lot,” he said.
Zimdancehall sensation Seh Calaz, real name Tawanda Mumanyi, and the charismatic prophet-cum-music promoter, Passion Java, are at “war”.
Seh Calaz recently dropped his new album titled “Bvopfiro Pariro” with tracks like “Hatibvume Kupusa” and “It’s Okay It’s Okay” being some of the outstanding compositions.
However, it is the track “Hatibvume Kupusa” that seems to have sparked friction between the two.
The song is more of a direct attack, rather response, to Java who is well known for making the “bvuma kupusiswa” chant.
Initially, Java appeared to have a soft spot for Seh Calaz’s new release. But that has changed now.
“What is ‘Bvopfiro Pariro?’ Mukoma wangu apa wakashaya, ndosaka usina ma views because hapana anoda kuterera mbodza idzi,” commented Java on his Facebook page.
The statement infuriated the chanter.
“Mukuru, ma ghetto youths are tired ne pride dzenyu. Hapana kana anokuda kuno; vanhu vanokudira mari chete. Huya usina uone kuti pane anokuda here,” said Calaz in his response on social media.
The comic Java swiftly countered, saying: “Inini handikwatiswe nema ghetto youths, ndokukoporayi mese, musatambe neni.”
Could this be a marketing gimmick for Seh Calaz’s new album? Only time will tell.
However, speaking in an interview, the “Mabhanditi” singer said he resents people that have no respect for ghetto youths.
“Passion (Java) should come to the ghetto and apologise otherwise we will fire salvos at him.”

Ngezi Platinum Through To Chibuku Super Cup Final …

Ngezi Platinum Stars edged Cranborne Bullets 1-0 in a Chibuku Super Cup semi-final match played at the National Sports Stadium on Saturday.

Bruno Mtigo’s goal early in the second half was all Roderick Dhlakama’s charges needed to book a place in the final of the tournament.

In-form Denver Mukamba almost fired Madamburo ahead as early as the third minute but his effort came off the crossbar.

It was all Ngezi in the early stages but Bullets settled and crawled their way back into the game.

Chances were far in between the for the two teams but neither of them could break the deadlock in the first half.

Two minutes after the restart, Ngezi took the lead.

Bruno Mtigo’s effort from close range somehow found its way into the back of the net, though the Bullets goalkeeper should have done better.

Wonder Kapinda almost levelled matters for Bullets in the 70th minute but his well-taken shot from outside the box hit the crossbar, with Nelson Chadya in goal for Madamburo, beaten.

The final five minutes of the match were rain-soaked but Ngezi held on to book a place in the final, in which they will play either Dynamos or FC Platinum.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Zivhu Mocks Mnangagwa Says Mugabe Was Never Drunk Nor A Druggie

Killer Zivhu…

By Farai D Hove | The expelled former ZANU PF legislator Killer Zivhu has indirectly mocked the ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa saying his predecessor was never drunk.

The development comes after a leaked video of the ZANU PF leader while drunk during the launching of a university scholarship fund issued under his name.

Said Zivhu: “One good thing about Mugabe aiva asingadakwi kana kusvutsa fodya. – ONE GOOD THING ABOUT ROBERT MUGABE IS THAT HE WAS NEVER DRUNK OR A SMOKER.”

Mnangagwa replaced his former boss in a violent military coup in 2017, and has since then struggled to hold the nation together, amid mass looting of state money and a sharp rise in drunkenness and drug taking in the community.

Zivhu’s comment shoots-straight-in the-eye of Mnangagwa’s recently leaked video during the launching of the ED-University Of Zambia scholarship program, designed to give disadvantaged Zimbabweans an opportunity to go and study at the UNZA.

In the video the politician is seen struggling to walk while strapping his tie all over his shoulder as if he is in his bedroom. He then appears in the wrong location of the building, and an unidentified woman struggles to help him with directions.

He is then assisted by the Deputy Minister Tino Machakaire and a second man, to get to his allocated place.

The embarrassing incident of Mnangagwa in a stupor

During the incident. Mnangagwa’s pink tie is seen thrown around his neck as if, a scarf.

Speaking later after the embarrassing incident, Mnangagwa, who expressed deep gratitude for the recognition and honour given him 44 years after he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the same university, said he was inspired to do more in support of the education sector in the country, including establishing synergies with regional and international universities.

“As a proud alumnus of this university, I am aware that this is the highest recognition that a university can award an individual.

“To give other young people the opportunity to experience learning at this great institution, I will be awarding Presidential Scholarships to deserving candidates to study at the University of Zambia,” said Mnangagwa.

Zanu PF MP Forces Schoolchildren To Attend Rally

ZLHR STATEMENT ON WORLD TOILET DAY

ON World Toilet Day, Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) calls upon the relevant authorities to ensure that there is greater access to toilets and adequate sanitation facilities around the country.

World Toilet Day is celebrated every year on 19 November. It is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of toilets in society and the need to address the global shortage of safe and functional toilets.

It is an opportunity for the public to take action towards resolving the global sanitation crisis by advocating for increased investment of public and private resources into the construction of more toilets. Moreover, World Toilet Day serves as a reminder of the global commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which is sustainable sanitation.

The theme for World Toilet Day in 2021 is ‘Valuing Toilets.’ The themeemphasises how toilets are important to the collective wellbeing of society.

The lack of access to toilets by some poses a threat to the health of the general public since poor sanitation leads to the spread of waterborne diseases and contamination of drinking water sources.

Ultimately, poor sanitation has the potential to overburden health care systems with patients suffering from avoidable waterborne diseases.

Despite the importance of toilets to public health, billions of people across the globe do not have access to proper toilets and other sanitation facilities. The United Nations (UN) estimates that over 700 children under five years old die from diarrhoea which is linked to
poor sanitation.

The UN estimates that over 2 billion people across the world drink contaminated water due to a lack of access to properly managed sanitation facilities.

The availability of adequate toilets is also essential for the protection of the fundamental right to human dignity. Everyone has a right to live a dignified life and this includes a life which is free from the dangers of a lack of access to safe and proper toilets, which
include ill-health and death in some instances.

Moreover, increased access to safe and functional toilets is vital because it will help achieve substantive equality.

In Zimbabwe, many communities lack access to safe and functional toilets and this has created a sanitation crisis in these communities. The state has a constitutional obligation to address this crisis by taking comprehensive steps to ensure access to adequate toilet
facilities.

The state actors have the duty to protect, promote and fulfil the fundamental rights which are entrenched in the Constitution of Zimbabwe. The need for adequate toilet facilities impacts a number of rights which include the right to human dignity, the right to life, the right to a clean environment, the right to access to health care and the right to equality. In light of this, the state has a duty to expedite the measures it has adopted to address the sanitation crisis in Zimbabwe.

On this World Toilet Day, ZLHR calls upon:

•       The public to join the rest of the world in calling for greater access to toilets and adequate sanitation facilities;

•       The authorities to adopt comprehensive measures that are designed to address the dire shortage of safe and functional toilets in Zimbabwe;

•       The authorities to expedite the steps that are being taken to increase access to toilets because public health depends on the availability of toilets and adequate sanitation facilities.

Drama At Growth Point As Hubby Undresses, Bites Wife Over Grocery Money

By A Correspondent- There was drama at Guruve growth point where a 39-year-old man undressed his wife, bite her thumb before assaulting her over grocery money.

The matter came to light at Guruve magistrates courts on Friday where Abel Kavhura was slapped with $10 000 fine for violating the domestic violence act.

Prosecutor Albert Charehwa told the court that on  October 30 Kavhura followed his wife Alice Nyemba to the growth point and demanded the grocery money he had given her.

The wife refused and the husband became violent before removing her clothes, biting her thumb and severely assaulted her with open hands.

He was restrained from futher assaulting her by a mob.

Sand Poachers Wreck Havoc In Cowdray Park

By A Correspondent- Illegal sand poachers are now targeting undeveloped housing stands in Bulawayo’s Cowdray Park suburb, leaving unclaimed pits that pose a danger to children.

Two children drowned in one of the unclaimed pits in 2020.

Cowdray Park residents said the illegal sand poachers frequented the suburb at night in search of the material, which has a ready market in the construction business.

“The poachers come here during the night and steal sand from unoccupied stands.

“The majority of land owners are based in South Africa,” Nomathemba Dlamini said.

“Last year we lost two children after they fell into one of such pits.”

Another resident, Vusumuzi Ndlovu said the city council must ensure that all stands were occupied to reduce land degradation caused by the sand poachers.

“All we are asking for is that the city council must take action and make sure that such pits are filled for the safety of our children,” Ndlovu said.

“If someone fails to develop the stand for more than five years then something has to be done.”

In February, a 15-year-old Pelandaba West boy drowned in an abandoned pit. The same hole claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl, who drowned in December 2020.

Ward 28 councillor Kidwell Mujuru confirmed the sand poaching activities in the suburb.

“It is very true that poachers have destroyed almost half of the Cowdray Park area,” Mujuru said.

“Some residents are responsible for what is happening.

“They usually sell pit sand when they are broke or in exchange of intoxicating substances for those who are consuming them.

“This has been happening for a long time with the aid of residents. River sand and pit sand are in demand.”

Sand poachers  charge  between US$80 and US100 for a truck load.

Mujuru added: “We are going to call a meeting with residents to come up with a long-term solution for this problem because it poses a threat.

“We will also create a neighbourhood watch group that will ensure that such things don’t happen.

“The city council has been trying to help through deployment of rangers, who patrol the area during the day.

“The challenge is that these people operate during the night and the ranges will no longer be there.”

“Highlanders CEO Contract Will Not Be Renewed”

By A Correspondent- Highlanders Football Club have decided not to renew the contract of their chief executive officer, Nhlanhla Dube when it expires at the end of the year.

Dube is on leave after his employer last month asked him to take a break since he had accumulated a lot of days. Ronald Moyo, the Highlanders media and communications officer is the acting CEO. It has since emerged that Dube, a former Highlanders secretary will cease to be a Bosso employee at the end of his contract on 31 December 2021.

Highly placed sources told this publication that Highlanders have formally written to Dube to inform him of the decision not to renew his contract so as to give him enough time to look for alternative means of survival while he winds up his contract with Amahlolanyama. The Bosso executive committee is said to be in agreement in their evaluation of Dube that he has not done much to earn a contract renewal.

“Nhlanhla Dube has been informed that his contract as Highlanders CEO will not be renewed. The club officially wrote to him recently so he now knows that he is not returning to his post,” said the source.

Dube has since his initial two-year contract expiry on 30 April 2019, been a source of division at Highlanders. Vice-chairman Modern Ngwenya together with the then secretary Israel Moyo were in 2019 suspended after the two voted against adopting recommendations from the club’s human resources committee to extend Dube’s contract to the end of that year. His contract has been getting periodic renewals since then, with the extensions coming under the chairmanship of Kenneth Mhlophe, who early this year lost in the elections to Josphat Sibanda.

Ngwenya and Moyo were eventually expelled from the committee after a full hearing but appealed that decision and returned to their positions a few months later. Moyo eventually lost the secretary’s post to Morgen Dube in the elections held early this year.

Highlanders chairman, Sibanda proffered a diplomatic response when a comment was sought from him about Dube’s status at the club.

“We don’t comment about employer and employee contracts in the media and public, that’s confidential information. I can’t comment on that,  that is the policy of the club,” Sibanda said.

Gvt Mulls New Radar Installation

By A Correspondent- The Government says it is working on installing a new radar to improve the surveillance of civilian airspace, amid fresh revelations of a crisis in the air traffic control system.

An association of the country’s air traffic controllers (ATCs) in May told the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) board of directors that they had operated without the aid of a working radar system since 2010.

However, Transport and Infrastructure Development permanent secretary Theodius Chinyanga, in an interview with The Standard said the aviation system always had surveillance equipment in place.

Chinyanga refuted a report claiming that private aircraft were sneaking in and out of Zimbabwean airports without detection due to poor surveillance.

He was quick to admit though, that the surveillance equipment was installed a long time ago and, therefore, needed to be replaced. Said Chinyanga:

Any aircraft that is of a civilian nature files its flight path papers before departing, so there is no chance of sneaking in and out.

He said the current refurbishments at Robert Gabriel Mugabe (RGM) International Airport included the instalment of a new surveillance system. Chinyanga said:

CAAZ have a radar, but it is old technology. The new installation would be based on the current generation of radars.

The current upgrades on infrastructure should entail all facets of surveillance as well.

On reports of private planes flying at low altitudes in and out of the country, Chinyanga said low-flying aircraft was the responsibility of the Defence ministry.

Defence minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri reportedly said she was in a meeting when contacted by the publication.

She is said to have ignored several other calls and WhatsApp messages.

But in an interview with the government-controlled media in December last year, Muchinguri-Kashiri admitted to the possibility of aircraft arriving and leaving undetected. She said:

There are too many airstrips and we know that there are some small aircraft that fly very low and are difficult to identify.

This is due to the old radar system that urgently needs replacement.

… We are working with CAAZ to close the gaps used by these small aircraft to smuggle minerals, especially gold.

Harare Pastor, Colleague Hauled To Court Over Money Laundering

By A Correspondent- Harare pastor and colleague have been arrested for alleged money laundering involving over US$2,2 million which they had splurged on houses and vehicles.

Edmore Chipiso (33), a pastor at Hatcliffe-based Reality of Fire Ministries who lives at 119 Broadlands, Emerald Hills, and a colleague, Roselyn Dunga (31), an aviation security employee of 16433 Stoneridge, Waterfalls, appeared before Harare Magistrates’ Court charged with contravening Section 8 (1)(a)(b) of the Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crime Act.

They were not asked to plead when they both appeared before Mr Stanford Mambanje and were remanded out of custody to December 3 on $20 000 bail each.

Prosecutor Mr Lancelot Mutsokoti told the court that on an unknown date, but between August and November 2021, the pair laundered over US$2 million.

The source of the money is yet to be established.

The duo reportedly bought a house at number 12 Giraffe Crescent, Borrowdale West, for US$580 000 and house number 14256 Leggate Street in Gunhill for US$400 000.

They also went on to buy a property in Selous – the remainder of Coburn 23 Plot measuring about 200 hectares – for US$130 000.

Mr Mutsokoti said after acquiring the properties, Chipiso and Dunga started buying vehicles.

The cars include a black Mercedes-Benz S350 (registration number AFG 2419) worth US$95 000, an Iveco truck, three DAF XF 105 truck horses, three flatbed trailers and 42 000-litre fuel tanker worth US$1 million.

However, they were arrested after the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) flagged their suspicious transactions. Overall, the pair reportedly laundered over US$2,2 million.

Mat South Records Malaria Cases Decline

By A Correspondent- Matabeleland South province has recorded 800 malaria cases and four deaths since January this year down from 2 823 registered cases and 11 fatalities during the same period last year.

Matabeleland South provincial epidemiology and disease control officer Andrew Muza said there has been a general decrease in malaria cases compared to 2020.

As of May 2020, statistics show that Matabeleland South recorded 2 823 cases of malaria and 11 deaths with Beitbridge accounting for 89% of the cases.

In 2019, the province accounted for 583 cases and nine deaths down from 1 966 cases and 10 deaths in 2018 during the same period.

“As a province we have reported about 800 malaria cases in 2021 and four deaths.

“Our incidence is generally low at 1/1000 population/year.

“Beitbridge and Gwanda have relatively higher incidences within the province,” Muza said in an emailed response to questions.

“Our province is in malaria elimination and our districts record 10 to 20 cases of malaria in one year except Beitbridge and Gwanda.

“Beitbridge East, which borders Chiredzi district in Masvingo province is a high malaria burden area that can have as much as 700 to a 1000 cases in a year.”

Muza said the epidemiology department is implementing elimination activities including malaria diagnosis and treatment to affected patients.

“Other activities include biolarviciding, indoor residual spraying to outbreak areas per rising need,” he said.

“We have strengthened surveillance systems as a response pillar to malaria elimination as well.

“As we are getting into the malaria season, which usually begins after the rains, we urge members of the public to cooperate with health officials by participating in malaria community vector control activities.

“Those that have been given nets need to use them for their intended purposes and use them correctly as taught.

“If anyone has symptoms suggestive of malaria-like fever and chills, generalised body weakness, vomiting and headaches they need to visit their nearest health facility early for prompt diagnosis and treatment.”

Malaria remains a public health problem in Zimbabwe.

Between 2011 and 2015, the malaria incidence was less than one case per 1000 population at risk in all districts save for Beitbridge and Gwanda.-the standard

Seh Calaz Buries Passion Java

By A Correspondent- The war of words between chanter Seh Calaz and controversial preacher Passion Java turned nasty with the musician claiming that the flamboyant skit preacher sacrificed the life of the late Soul Jah Love.

At the time of his death early this year, Soul Jah Love was under the management of Passion Java Records and recorded songs under the label.
Last week Java took to Instagram to mock Seh Calaz, describing him as a spent force who has three albums in one year, but with no achievements to talk about.
Seh Calaz responded with a video saying Java was just bitter because he turned down his offer to join Passion Java Records.
He went on to release a diss track dubbed Handibvume Kupusiswa, produced by Lazy T. In the song he samples Soul Jah Love’s part in Ndakamukwapaidza. He goes on to say that Java had tarnished Soul Jah Love’s image.
He said that Java was not a promoter, but a culture vulture whose intentions are to use musicians for clout before dumping them.
In response to the diss track, Passion Java under his recording label dropped an unreleased Soul Jah Love song dubbed Nzwisiso.
The video of the song features Java showcasing mick mouse dances and Soul Jah Love’s brother, Tendai Musaka.
Seh Calaz and Soul Jah Love once divided, not just music fans in their widely publicised beef, which saw fans from the respective camps Mabhanditi and the Conquering Family clashing every time there was a musical gathering.
The beef, which promoters tried to settle on stage, would end in violent skirmishes. In 2014 their clash lasted nearly 15 minutes at the City Sports Centre as violence became the order of the night.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, Seh Calaz said he was now starting to believe rumours that Java knows what caused Soul Jah Love’s death.
“When Soul Jah Love died, his mobile phone and laptop with music went missing, raising suspicion of foul play and even his post mortem was never revealed, even though I don’t want to believe that you sacrificed Soul Jah Love, but what you are doing and saying right now might prove that you did it (killed Soul Jah Love),” said Seh Calaz.
“Wakachekeresa mwana (Soul Jah Love) that’s why you always drag his name in everything you do. Now wakuunganidza vanhu nemumvuri we mwana, (you are attracting the masses through Soul Jah Love’s name).”
The Mabhanditi kingpin went on to claim foul play and said that Soul Jah Love might have died at his house before being taken to Mbuya Dorcas Clinic where he was pronounced dead.
“I don’t believe that Soul Jah Love died at Mbuya Dorcas clinic, but at his house then you took him there. I knew everything about Soul Jah Love and he also knew about me, of all the people who were very close to him, how come you were the first to confirm and break the news of his death yet others such as Waddis, Changara, and Chippaz didn’t know about it. You know nothing about Soul Jah Love, he was not your close buddy.
“Leave Soul Jah Love to rest in peace and stop using his name to fight me and also stop misleading President Emmerson Mnangagwa that you will harvest the youth vote and help with the five million votes for Zanu PF yet you speak ill of the same poor youths you claim to represent.”
In a follow-up interview with Seh Calaz, he said he had nothing further to say and would let the music do the talking.
“All the answers are in the music and the live videos I did. I was provoked and reacted and music is the only way I express my feelings. It’s a closed chapter now and I am moving on with my music,” he said.
Efforts to get a comment from Passion Java were fruitless as he did not respond to messages sent to his mobile phone. Standard

Mugabe Campaign Preacher Resurfaces, Backs Mnangagwa

By A Correspondent- Zanu PF-aligned cleric Obadiah Musindo, of the Destiny for Afrika Network (Danet), they are targeting to mobilise more than one million votes for President Emmerson Mnangagwa ahead of the 2023 harmonised elections.

Musindo was very active in campaigning for Zanu PF during the late former President Robert Mugabe era. He could use his “church” and non-existing residential stands to lure voters for Mugabe during that time.

Zanu PF has said that it is targeting five million voters while the main opposition MDC Alliance is eyeing six million voters in its ongoing voter mobilisation drive.

Musindo said his organisation plans to mobilise “virgin voters” and the marginalised communities through the provision of housing and empowerment projects and voter registration. Musindo said:

We have launched a programme where all our beneficiaries must ensure that their families are registered voters.

Voting is a civic duty that we are obliged to do and we must do so as patriotic Zimbabweans.

Everyone must ensure that their kids are registered to vote and they must vote for ZANU PF starting with the forthcoming by-elections.

There are 133 vacant seats in Parliament and Local Government following the recall of MDC Alliance legislators and councillors.

President Mnangagwa recently told party supporters in a mini-rally in Chimanimani that by-elections will be held in the first quarter of 2022.

Mnangagwa Speaks On Drug Abuse

By A Correspondent- President Mnangagwa has implored children to be disciplined, hardworking, respectful and also abstain from drugs and wayward behaviour if they are to be competitive in a globalised world.
Speaking in an interactive session with children drawn from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia during the World Children’s Day forum that was held here yesterday, President Mnangagwa said while children have their expectations, their governments also expect good behaviour from them.
“Today’s interactive meeting informs us leaders what you think we should do for you. But you should also apply your minds on what you think we as your leaders should do for you, for us to help. We want discipline. Respect your parents, respect your teachers, lecturers and professors. Abstain from drugs and wayward living, that is what we would want you to be. We feel better that you the young, who are going to be leaders of these countries — these communities, are discussing these issues,” said the President.

Zimbabwe’s young people were represented by Nkosilathi Nyathi, a UNICEF climate change activist from Victoria Falls who passionately pleaded with the regional leaders to give children space to express themselves.
President Mnangagwa said in the past it was rare for children to be afforded platforms where they would interact with their leaders, but now times have changed and the progressive leaders of today have roped children on board to hear their concerns.
“I am really thrilled and impressed that President (Botswana President Mokgweetsi) Masisi thought he should assemble us to discuss these issues. I have no doubt that leaders would want to leave behind a society that is focused, a society that is competitive, we are living in a digital world and it is necessary, therefore, that we teach you digital technology as early as possible,” the President said.
President Mnangagwa joined his Botswana counterpart Dr Masisi, Namibian President Hage Geingob and Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema at the quadripoint where Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia meet.

This year’s annual World Children’s Day was held under the theme, “Reimagining the Future”, a new initiative that seeks to give children and young people the space to engage in defining the vision they want for their future and future generations.
The Kazungula Bridge was lit in blue, symbolising that children have no limitations to their hopes and aspirations.
“This occasion gives an opportunity to us the leaders to hear the children express themselves, their aspirations and what they expect from us. But before I go into detail, I would like to challenge the children; besides expecting us to do things for you, we as leaders also have expectations of you,” said President Mnangagwa.
“Our education systems, in the respective countries, it is necessary that we begin to address issues of capacitating our young people, from primary to secondary and institutions of higher learning, we need to create an environment where you can excel, where those who have talents can express themselves”.
The President said as young men and women, their generation used to aspire to be teachers’ clerks and nurses, with fluency in English a status symbol, but now times have changed.
“Our education was structured not to make us think about creating products and services, to modernise and industrialise our nations, but today this has changed and the burden is now on you.

“It is critically important in my view that we structure an environment where your views find channels into policy formulation and implementation,” he said.
The Second Republic has introduced several interventions that have improved the lives of children, including among other facilities, the Women’s Bank, a Youth Empowerment Bank, and a desk for youths at every ministry. The President also has a special advisor on people with disabilities.
It has brought in innovation hubs at tertiary institutions, giving young innovative minds platforms to blossom and help in the modernisation and industrialisation of the country through well-funded industrial parks.

“Satanist” Teacher Sues School

The village head and the community staged a demonstration at the school resulting in Mutando being transferred from the school.

They are being tormented by goblins that take away their prepared food, and eat it before replacing it with soil.

This has been happening for some time now and has left the family living in abject poverty after two huts were recently reduced to rubbles by a mysterious fire.

The fire destroyed household property as well as clothes and foodstuffs. The origins of the fire are yet to be ascertained.

The children often fall into trances, and some of them are now staying at a local prophet’s homestead, a development that is compromising their safety.

A neighbour who requested anonymity revealed that they have informed Chief Saunyama and other relevant authorities such as the Department of Social Welfare to act on the issue. Said the neighbour:

It is a serious case. Their food disappears from their plates especially when the three juveniles and Gogo Nyikayaramba are about to eat.

This has severely traumatised the kids and their health is failing. Villagers are also perplexed.

The goblins are reportedly being unleashed by Gogo Nyikayaramba’s relatives who want to get rid of them.

Acting Chief Saunyama summoned the Nyikayaramba family to his traditional court and were set to appear before him yesterday (Friday).

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers Association (ZINATHA) president, George Kandiero urged Gogo Nyikayaramba to come clean on the issue.

Mangwana said this as he failed to provide a video of Mnangagwa speaking full sentences.

,”Show a video of the President speaking full sentences (if he did this at any point), and particularly of him walking away from the podium (as he obviously did).

“That will answer all questions,” said the Australia based Thabani Sibanda.

T Freddy Rape Case, Another ZBC Staffer Arrested

By A Correspondent- An engineer at ZBC Friday appeared in court on allegations of attempting to extort Goodness and Mercy Ministries leader Tapiwa Freddy of US$20 000 after threatening to expose a love affair between the self-styled prophet and radio presenter Rutendo Makuti.

Mutetepi Maushe (36) was not asked to plead to extortion charges when he appeared before magistrate Mr Dennis Mangosi, who remanded him to December 7 on free bail.
Maushe is likely to be jointly charged with Makuti, who is facing similar allegations, when he returns to court.

It is said sometime last year, Freddy was involved in a love affair with Makuti.
The court heard that during the subsistence of their relationship Mutetepi allegedly connived with Makuti to extort money from Freddy and started threatening him saying he was a brother to Makuti. He was using the name Tapson Makuti.
Allegations are that Mutetepi instructed Freddy to pay Rutendo Makuti US$20 000 for their love affair not to be exposed to the public and to avoid allegations of rape against him.
Mutetepi allegedly called Freddy purporting to be Makuti’s brother and demanded the US$20 000.

Sometime this month, Mutetepi called Freddy and allegedly gave him an ultimatum of up to the end of the day to pay the US$20 000 and sign a document admitting that he raped his alleged sister.
Freddy noted the extortionist tendencies and reported the matter to police.
Makuti was arrested when she was lured to meet Freddy to discuss the signing of the document and the payment of the US$20 000.
She then allegedly implicated Maushe.

Ken Sharpe’s Borrowdale Houses Condemned

Harare Provincial Development Coordinator (PDC) Tafadzwa Muguti has condemned controversial businessman Kenneth Raydon Sharpe’s Borrowdale houses which were constructed on a wetland saying they are not good for the environment.

Muguti made the remarks while addressing residents’ associations during a Harare Wetlands Trust meeting at Town House last week.

Muguti accused Sharpe of grossly disrespecting wetlands.

“Let me echo my displeasure, it is very bad that we have people who believe that because they are building larger property development projects they are actually to an extent immune,” Muguti said.

“There are people who feel protected by council, I am very worried about developments happening around the Borrowdale racecourse area. I grew up watching those wetlands, you wake up in the morning and there is a grader that is already building roads and you can see that stands are going to come,” added Muguti.

He accused the City of Harare and the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) of corruption, questioning why they would allow development to proceed on a wetland.

“Unfortunately we have had so much corruption in this great nation of ours over the years such that when I drive around and see people building three story buildings on wetlands I am actually in shock and wonder which blind person from EMA allowed such development. What I have promised your minister is that from now on if there is a wetland that has been given an EIA certificate, we to build on a wetland we should allow people to challenge that certificate. We cannot connive in offices and agree at the expense of residents who are on the ground,” said Muguti.

He further noted that residents have been rendered powerless as City of Harare wantonly disregards their adverse reports against developments on wetlands.

“We all know that Harare has a greater master-plan, the areas which are wetlands have not been built on for a reason, they were left out of the master-plan for a reason. It was not an omission; it was actually part of the plan that they be left out. There is also the issue to do with large property developers, while they are good for us as a province they need to also be good for the environment,” Muguti said.

Nick Mangwana Blasted For Advertising Billy Rautenbach’s Houses

By Jane Mlambo| Norton legislator Temba Mliswa has blasted Information Secretary Nick Mangwana for advertising Billy Rautenbach’s Aspindale flats saying such actions strengthens the controversial businessman’s behavior of intimidating people using government links.

Responding to Mangwana’s post where he was announcing the official commissioning of the Aspindale flats by Housing minister Daniel Garwe, Mliswa had no kind words for the information Secretary.

“Ko why is @nickmangwana advertising private flats by Billy Rautenbach. This is the capturing of Gvt that we talk about. Instead of showing us real government housing programs for the masses you are selling private flats.

“This is how Billy intimidates people by showing them Gvt links in issues where he has no legal standing. It’s unfortunate that Gvt channels state machinery and systems to promote his private business instead of national housing programmes,” said Mliswa.

Mangwana had posted the message below;

“Minister Garwe has commissioned Aspindale Aspire Heights flats in Aspindale near Kambuzuma.
This is the first block with 16 units. 12 more blocks are under construction. Flats are open to everyone. One pays US$20 000 deposit and then US$4000 per month for a year.”

Meanwhile, social media users have also reacted angrily to Mangwana’s post which they said exposes government’s elitist approach of marketing properties which civil servants cannot afford to buy.

Opposition Transform Zimbabwe leader Jacob Ngarivhume had this to say; Not sure if I should laugh or cry.4000 USD/month is a mortgage for an upper middle class family. This is so troubling.

Chiredzi Woman Bitten By Scorpion While Sleeping Outside Due To Scotching Heat

The scotching heat in Chiredzi has caused the death of a woman who was bitten by a black scorpion while sleeping outside the house with her husband on Sunday.

The couple was sleeping on a mat on the ground to escape unbearable temperature inside the house.

Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson Kudakwashe Dehwa confirmed the death.

“I can confirm that a woman who was sleeping with her husband outside their house was bitten by a snake and died two hours later in Chiredzi,” said Dehwa.

Dehwa said that Flora Munorwei (40) of Zunguza Village, Chief Gudo went to bed with her husband Kesias Muzundi outside the house as it was too hot inside.

At around 9pm, Munorwei who was already asleep screamed that something had bitten her on the left shoulder and her husband checked and saw a big black scorpion and called the kids to kill the scorpion.

The scorpion left a black mark on Munorwei’s shoulder and they rushed her to St Joseph Gudo Clinic in a wheelbarrow where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body was taken to Chiredzi General Hospital for post mortem.

Black scorpions known as parabathus transvaalicus are known to be poisonous. In Zimbabwe they are found in the most dry parts of the country which is the Lowveld and Southern Region.

A Ministry of Health official who is the Masvingo Provincial Medical Director, Amadeous Shamu said cases of deaths resulting from scorpion sting are a few and mostly people who are bitten by scorpions survive.

“Most patients who are bitten by scorpions survive but however we have rare cases of deaths depending on the type of scorpion since we have some scorpions which are very dangerous,”said Shamu.

Hwange Inmates Injured After Lightning Strikes Prison

Thirteen inmates at Hwange Prison were on Friday afternoon injured, four of them seriously, when they were struck by lightning inside the prison yard while having lunch.

Zimbabwe has started experiencing summer rains which are mostly accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) national deputy spokesperson Superintendent Peter Chaparanganda told Sunday News that all the affected inmates were rushed to hospital.

“On 19 November 2021 at around 11am a bolt of lightning struck at Hwange Prison in Matabeleland North Province and 13 convicted male inmates were affected.

The inmates were inside the prison yard while they were having lunch.

All the 13 inmates were rushed to St Patrick’s Hospital and upon arrival four of them were reported to be serious while the other nine were said to be stable.

The four were referred to Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo for further management,” said Supt Chaparanganda.

He said as of yesterday the four inmates were in a stable condition.

Although he could not be drawn to reveal the extent of injuries sustained, sources told Sunday News that the burns were third degree, while the other nine had mild burns.

Third degree is a severe type of burn that extends through every layer of the skin.On Thursday last week, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) issued a warning that some parts of the country could experience storms with winds strong enough to blow off roofs.

“Moisture is drifting into the country from Botswana through Matabeleland North and South provinces. This coupled with high temperatures over much of the country should result in thunderstorms which may be violent in some places (coupled with strong winds, lightning, hail and heavy rains in some places). This is normal for the first time of the year, especially in a season which is expected to have normal to above normal rains,” said MSD.

The Government has since activated disaster response teams through the Civil Protection Unit in anticipation of extreme weather related eventualities and Treasury has already allocated funds to conduct awareness campaigns on rain related hazards.

Members of the public have also been called on, to where necessary to stay indoors, avoid travelling in open trucks or working on the fields and hiding under trees when it rains.

In a statement, PSL said: “The Premier Soccer League has engaged various stakeholders including club supporters associations concerning gate charges for PSL matches.

“While the PSL notes that clubs suffered huge financial losses during the Covid-19 pandemic and continue to incur a lot of costs in preparation for matches, we also understand the need to make our matches appealing and affordable to football fans who are the heartbeat of the game.

President Mnangagwa Orders Pumps To Produce Z$ Fuel | CLEVER or STUPID?

The fuel will be available to all those who want to access it, according to an instruction President Mnangagwa has given to the Ministry of Energy and Power Development…

By Dorothy Moyo | ANALYSIS |

In what is clearly the ordering of fuel stations to produce Zim dollar rated fuel, the ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa has promised a facility in which imports of fuel will be sold in local currency by service stations starting at the end of this November.

The fuel will be available to all those who want to access it, according to an instruction President Mnangagwa has given to the Ministry of Energy and Power Development.

Most fuel at present is sold in foreign currency, with imports done through free funds, largely the foreign currency paid by users.

There were modest imports using foreign currency auction funds, with some cheating and selling this in foreign currency, but few have been bidding recently for auction funds for fuel, hence the need for the direct Government action.

Last month, the energy sector regulator, the Zimbabwe Energy Regulation Authority (Zera), flighted an advert inviting fuel station owners and distributors who wished to participate in supplying fuel in local currency.

So far, 57 fuel station owners and distributors have responded and the first tranche of 15 distributors and fuel station owners is now working with Zera and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe on modalities to ensure that the facility is water tight.

Acting Energy and Power Development Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere confirmed the development yesterday.

According to details made available, the Zimbabwe dollar fuel facility will also be extended to State-owned enterprises and strategic Government contracts for roads and dams construction.

The ministry has already developed some of the modalities and frameworks in monitoring the implementation of the Zimbabwe dollar fuel scheme.

They include that all fuel companies should have the national fuel management system installed, that designated service stations should sell in local currency only and Zera will monitor and analyse the specific supplier, including banking transactions.

Companies are also expected to submit weekly returns to Zera, and ensure that service stations selling fuel in local currency are advertised in the print and electronic media.

Companies participating in the facility must have at least three service stations in different provinces.

Containers are banned for the Zimbabwe dollar fuel, which will prevent people buying in local currency and selling in foreign currency.

The participating companies will be barred from uplifting fuel from the National Oil Infrastructure Company depots before reconciling the previous allocation.

Hefty penalties will be applied on companies that fail to account for proper application of fuel sold in local currency.

Fielding questions from backbenchers in the National Assembly on Wednesday, Dr Muswere said the framework was being developed, which will see Zera working closely with the Reserve Bank and fuel suppliers and distributors to come up with a list which will then be published by the Ministry of Energy and Power Development.

Responding to a question from Buhera South legislator, Cde Joseph Chinotimba (Zanu PF), who wanted to know how soon the facility would be ready, Dr Muswere said: “What I would like to assure him and this House is that before the end of this month, the Zimbabwean dollar fuel facility will be fully functional.” – Additional reporting, State Media

Council Mulls Constructing Solar Plant At Pelandaba Cemetery

By A Correspondent- The Bulawayo City Council is working on establishing solar farms within their water pumping stations which will help solve the problem of power outages which have forced the local authority to introduce a 72-hour water shedding schedule.

The local authority last week increased its water shedding schedule from 48 hours a week to 72 hours as the power outages continued to affect water pumping in the city. According to the Town Clerk, Mr Christopher Dube, the power outages resulted in subsequently subdued abstraction and pumping.

Speaking to Sunday News the Mayor, Councillor Solomon Mguni said council has submitted a number of solar generation projects to the Zimbabwe Investment Development Agency (Zida) which will see the power outage problem being resolved in the city. He said the aim was to have the solar farms also feeding into the national grid.

“When we came into office, if you recall, we advertised for those with free funds to take up solar generating projects in and around the city. We were earmarking some of those to be within our water treatment sites. The expressions of interest showed that we got an overwhelming response.

We forwarded those investments to the Zimbabwe Investment Development Agency for approval as per norm in terms of investments for projects of that magnitude, so we are still waiting for confirmation whether those projects meet the test in terms of requirements for such kind of investments,” said Clr Mguni.

He said if the city could get a few of the projects approved it will be able to generate electricity within Bulawayo hence being able to consume part of that electricity that will be produced and also feed into the national grid.

Clr Mguni further bemoaned the high levels of daily water consumption by the city, noting that this was also contributing to the strained supplies being experienced in the city.

“Consumption has also been high of late because of the high temperatures, the heat that we are facing. Where we are supposed to consume an average of 140 mega litres per day, the consumption is shooting to between 160 and 180 mega litres a day, which is quite difficult to contain and manage.

“Further the Tuli catchment area, whose reservoir supplies most of Eastern suburbs, is giving us a lot of problems in terms of balancing the rate of consumption. We suspect that individuals are doing a lot of agriculture activities at their homes,” he said.

Meanwhile, the local authority has submitted a partnership proposal to Zida that will see a solar plant being constructed at the Pelandaba Cemetery.

The project was also presented to delegates at COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland early this month as a profitable and innovative project by a public sector partner, with win-win benefits for the private sector, residents and the environment.

According to a council confidential report, the project will be spearheaded by the local authority together with Scottish company, Chitendai Limited.

“Management had since received an expression of interest from Chitendai Limited to develop and build a solar plant at Pelandaba Cemetery in the city of Bulawayo, with the intention of supplying clean, reliable and more affordable electricity to the regional utility companies.

The project will create employment and improve the economy of Bulawayo. If allocated the area, Chitendai Limited will undertake feasibility studies at their own cost.

They were also aware and acknowledge that if the results of the feasibility study show that the site was not suitable for solar installations their costs were irrecoverable,” reads the report.

The local authority noted that if successful, the initiative would invite other project investors to participate in similar projects and would draw lot of global attention to the city.

“You have heard the chairperson (Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri) saying that last month in October we held the national people’s conference that was chaired by the chairperson and all provinces including yours endorsed him.”

“You said you wanted Shumba, Murambwi, President Mnangagwa, a competent leader, a leader who will be our candidate in the 2023 elections, so that he can achieve his vision 2030. Ezekiel Guti Defeated By Student In High Court Over Speaking In Tongues Orders

Ezekiel Guti

By Farai D Hove | The ZAOGA church owner, Ezekiel Guti’s university leadership has been defeated in the High Court after ordering that students must first speak in tongues for them to be elected to student-union leadership positions.

The matarenda-money built, Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University had been taken to court by a student who the institution barred from leading

High Court judge Justice Webster Chinamora on Thursday ruled that ZEGU’s decision to disqualify Modester Zinhanga is illegal.

Ezekiel Guti
Ezekiel Guti sitting at Mnangagwa’s high table (file copy).

Justice Chinamora ruled as follows, that:

1. The decision to disqualify Applicant is unfair discrimination and a direct violation of section 56 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

2. *All students* who qualify as registered and enrolled with the First Respondent with *at least a semester of study* at the 1st Respondent have an equal opportunity and equal benefit of the law which must be promoted and protected and must be afforded the equal opportunity to run for elections in the student body.

3. That the decision of Respondents should be confined to what the First Respondent’s University Charter permits as fair discrimination under the supreme and ultimate guidance of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

4. The whole section 9 of the  Students Handbook 2021 Edition is *unconstitutional* to the extent of its inconsistency.

5. Respondents to pay costs of suit.

In a brief statement, a student body announced in writing saying it acknowledges and appreciates the judgment of the High Court, which declared that disqualification of a Presidential candidate from contesting in the Students Executive Council Elections, who is also a member of the Consorted Young-people Front; Modester Zinhanga, on the basis of section 9 of Respondent’s Handbook, which also affected other members of the Consorted Young-people Front; Chris Zindi, Mupezeni as unfair discrimination and subsequently unconstitutional.

The judgment denounced the intention of Respondents to apply section 86 of the Constitution, because stipulations or regulations of Respondents do not have the status of a law of general application.

As a representative of the Consorted Young-people Front, I want to confirm that when our Candidates were disqualified, we were ready, actually always ready, to defend the rights of our candidate. We are fully aware of our rights, in particular fundamental rights of students. Our appreciation of these rights gives us the confidence to always be ready to vindicate them. We feel that this is just the beginning, if need be, we will always vindicate our rights before Courts in Zimbabwe and the region because we believe that Courts have a duty to protect our interests as long same are genuine and whenever they are violated. We cannot stand to watch anyone being victimised.

What we appreciate is that decisions are made by human beings, and any such decisions cannot be immortalised, neither can we be made to worship or abide by decisions that are wrong at law. Universities have a duty as hubs of intellectual excellence to afford everyone an equal opportunity. It becomes mind boggling when students of other Universities who are now Doctors and Professors connive to impinge on the rights of young persons in such an age of constitutional democracy.

As the Consorted Young People Front, we believe gone are the days when authorities would easily get away with murder! We know our rights, and we will exercise all the rights available to us as a body, and through our members. We are willing to go to any length in order to assert our rights contained in our Constitution and all liberties afforded to us because we are human beings.

Over and above the court has set a tone for us, it has created an ambiance that we forever will be indebted to. It has given us a solid ground for entrenching academic freedom at length.

I Call Heaven And Earth

Sabbath School Summary

Choose Life

Lesson 8

Memory Text: Deuteronomy 30:19 ‘I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.’

INTRODUCTION.

Always, it’s a sad story: a young person, in this case a 22-year-old woman, diagnosed with a deadly disease. Brain tumor. Even with all the marvels of modern medicine, nothing could be done until the inevitable. But this young woman, “Sandy,” didn’t want to die.

So, she had a plan. After she died, her head would be put in a deep freeze, into a vat of liquid nitrogen, in hopes of preserving her brain cells. And there it would wait, fifty years, one hundred years, a thousand years, until sometime in the future, when technology had advanced enough so that her brain, composed of neural connections, could then be uploaded into a computer. And yes, Sandy could “live” on, maybe even forever.

Sad story, not just because a young person was going to die but because of where she put her hope of life. Like most people, Sandy wanted life, wanted to live. But she chose a path that, in the end, surely won’t work.

SABBATH: In the age of modern medicine, some are selling the idea of living eternally through the use of liquid nitrogen. Cryonicists say that it’s wrong to refer to a dead body as a corpse. Instead, the dead is just “deanimated.” Sandy who had cancer had a plan to also preserve her brain in this liquid after death believing that future technology will revive her. Eternal life is only in God (the Giver).

SUNDAY: Adam & Eve, the leaves & rocks didn’t choose to come into existence. Such is our case. What God offers is the choice to remain in existence—to choose eternal life in Him. Eden had the “tree of life” which could prolong life. When Adam sinned, the pair lost access to the tree. From onset, man had two choices; eternal life or eternal death (Gen. 2:8, 9, 15-17, 3:22, 23, GC, p. 532,533, Rev. 2:7, 22:2, 14).

MONDAY: We work for God or for Satan. Either we’re wholeheartedly Christians or none at all. There’s no middle ground—we are hot or cold. Man has always had only two choices. Those who are willing to make any sacrifice for eternal life will have it (John 3:16, Gen. 7:22, 23,Rom. 6:23, 8:6, 1 John 5:12, Matt. 7:24-27). At the end of the great controversy, sin & sinners will be destroyed (2 Thess. 1:9).

TUESDAY: The long discourse in Deuteronomy about the result of disobeying God ends with a message of grace. All repentant sinners would be saved. Though the Israel may go into exile, God will restore the nation. God has always be plain with man; we’re to choose good over evil if we’re to have eternal life (Deut. 30:15-20). Sin brings death, evil, & curses. Use the gift of free will wisely.

WEDNESDAY: God offers grace but not cheap grace. Christ died for us. We have a sacrifice to make to earn God’s grace. We shall find everything worth dying for if we want eternal life. No task will be too hard for us (Deut. 30:1-10). God’s promises to Israel would do the nation no good if they sinned against Him. We’re to love God back for His love (Deut. 30:11-14, COL, p. 333, Rom. 10:16-10).

THURSDAY: God doesn’t accept partial obedience. He is a jealous God. We either worship Him who brings life or other gods which brings evil & death. Worship was key in God’s covenant with Israel. Unlike other nations, Israel was the only nation who worshipped the true God (Deut. 32:39, 4:19, 8:19, 11:16, 30:17, 4:24, 5:9, 6:15). God won’t force us to worship Him like the beast (Rev. 13:1-15; 14:6-12).

FRIDAY: We cannot alter our DNA, but the power of choice is ours. Daily, out of willful choice we make a decision to serve God or Satan; to be saved or lost. God has not predestined some to be saved or lost. The gift of freewill comes with the sacred duty of choosing blessings or curses. Sin leads to eternal death not eternal torment. God bids us to choose life not death (Rom. 6:23, Deut. 30:15).

Discussion Questions

? In class, talk more about the idea presented in Tuesday’s study, about whether it is God who directly brings punishment here and now for disobedience or whether it comes as a law-like consequence of the acts of disobedience. Or might it be both? Might there be cases where it is one or the other? How do we understand this topic?

? What do the texts we looked at in the Ellen White statement today teach us about the power of God available to us to overcome sin?

? Read Romans 10:1-10, where Paul quotes from Deuteronomy 30:11-14 as he expounds on salvation by faith in Jesus in contrast to seeking salvation and righteousness through the law. Why do you think he used these verses from Deuteronomy? Pay special attention to Romans 10:10: “For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (NKJV). What point is Paul making?

ZBC Engineer Nabbed Over T Freddy Extortion

By A Correspondent| In another twist, an engineer at ZBC on Friday appeared in court on allegations of attempting to extort Prophet Tapiwa Freddy of US$20 000 after threatening to expose a love affair between  the prophet and radio presenter Rutendo Makuti.

Mutetepi Maushe (36) was not asked to plead to extortion charges when he appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi, who remanded him to December 7 on free bail.

Maushe purported to be Rutendo’s brother in the alleged bid to extort.

Rutendo was married to 2013 Presidential candidate, Kisinoti Munodei Mukwazhe who died in November 2019.

According to the State, sometime last year, Goodness and Mercy Ministries leader T Freddy was involved in a love affair with Makuti.

During the relationship, Mutetepi allegedly connived with Rutendo to extort money from Freddy and started threatening him as a brother to her. He was using the name Tapson Makuti.

Allegations are that Mutetepi instructed Freddy, in a phone call, to pay Rutendo US$20 000 for their love affair not to be exposed to the public and to avoid allegations of rape against him.

Sometime this month, Mutetepi called Freddy and allegedly gave him an ultimatum of up to the end of the day to pay the US$20 000 and sign a document admitting that he raped his “sister”.

Freddy noted the extortionist tendencies and reported the matter to police.

Meanwhile, Radio Zimbabwe presenter Rutendo appeared in court on November 12 accused of extorting Freddy for US$35,000.

Rutendo, 33, was granted Z$5,000 bail by Harare magistrate Sheunesu Matova, who remanded her to December 9.

The court heard that sometime in 2020, Freddy had an affair with Makuti who later threatened that if he did not meet her financial and material demands, she would expose the affair.

It is alleged that sometime in August 2021, Freddy was summoned by Chief Chikwaka of Goromonzi. Upon his arrival at the chief’s homestead, he received information that there were some police officers who wanted to extort him at the chief’s residence.

Freddy, says the prosecution, drove off without entering the chief’s home.

The preacher was stopped by police officers at a roadblock on Mutoko Road not too far from the chief’s home.

The officers, the court heard, told Freddy that they had been given instructions by their superior, an Inspector Jaji, and Chief Chikwaka not to allow him passage.

PSL Reviews Gate Charges

The Premier Soccer League has, for the second time, reviewed the gate charges for the Castle Lager Premiership matches in the 2021 season.

The PSL had initially pegged the lowest at $20 when fans were allowed into stadiums in October before putting it at $10 following a major outcry.

After consultation with stakeholders, the League has again reduced the lowest ticket to $3.

“Taking into account the above, the PSL has reviewed gate charges for all PSL matches effective from the Chibuku Super Cup Semi-finals to be played this weekend”

Impact Of COVID-19 On TB Control

We Will Rule Forever- Chiwenga

Tinashe Sambiri| In typical military style, Zanu PF vice president Constantino Chiwenga, has declared that his party has the capacity to declare Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa “life President.”

Chiwenga made the remarks in Beitbridge on Wednesday.

He accused the opposition and pressure group of plotting to overthrow his boss.

Chiwenga, quoted by NewsDay, said :
“You have heard the chairperson (Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri) saying that last month in October we held the national people’s conference that was chaired by the chairperson and all provinces including yours endorsed him.”

“You said you wanted Shumba, Murambwi, President Mnangagwa, a competent leader, a leader who will be our candidate in the 2023 elections, so that he can achieve his vision 2030. His detractors have been defeated and are now saying this and that. Zanu PF will rule forever and if they dare (the naysayers), we will amend the law that we want (President Emerson Mnangagwa) forever.”

Soldiers, CIOs Beat Up Police Officers At Roadblock

By A Correspondent- A team of soldiers, central intelligence officers and police officers reportedly pounced on police officers who were refusing to remove a roadblock at Mazowe in Mashonaland Central province. The joint team drove away the police officers with switches.

Police officers manning the road block had to run for dear life and remove their drums on the road.

Sources familiar with the incident allege that  an order to discontinue roadblocks was dispatched since motorist were complaining of being fleeced on road blocks but Mazowe police station resisted.

“All stations in Mashonaland Central province complied but Mazowe refused and a lorry full of security forces pounced on them and drove them away with switches,” said the source.

Motorists are happy with the move as they now travel freely without being victimized and fleeced by the police.-Byo24

Media Practitioner Peter Banga Buried

By A Correspondent- Scores of mourners thronged Nhekairo Village in Hwedza communal lands for the burial of veteran lecturer and media practitioner Peter Banga.

He was head of department for Mass Communication at Harare Polytechnic and he died in sleep at his Sunningdale home in Harare last week.

Speaker after speakers described Banga, affectionately known as “uncle”, as a humble man who motivated and inspired people from different walks of life.

He worked for ZBC from 1987 to 2005 where he rose to prominence presenting programmes such as Newsreel, Newsbeat and Insight on the then Radio One, Radio Three and ZBC TV, respectively. Duo Die In Nyaradzo Funeral Services Bus, Haulage Truck Collision

Accident

By A Correspondent- Two people died on the spot while scores were injured yesterday when a haulage truck and a Nyaradzo Funeral Services bus that was carrying mourners collided along the Bulawayo-Harare highway near Cement Siding.

The mourners were returning from Lower Gweru, Midlands province after burying a relative when the bus driver is said to have encroached onto oncoming traffic while trying to overtake.

The bus collided with the haulage truck that was carrying approximately 40 000 bricks.

Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Linos Phiri said there were almost 80 people on the bus.

“We are still conducting a head count to determine how many people were involved in this accident. So far two people died on the spot, one of them being the driver of the haulage truck and the other being a woman on the bus.

The other passengers were injured while the bus driver broke his legs in the collision,” he said.

When a Chronicle news crew visited the accident scene, the mangled remains of the haulage truck showed the gravity of the accident.

Victims were seated on the road side in shock.

The Fire Brigade team had to cut the roof of the haulage truck to remove the dismembered body of the driver as ambulance teams were attending to accident victims.

There were several ambulances that ferried badly injured survivors to United Bulawayo Hospitals.

There was a traffic jam on the Bulawayo-Harare highway caused by the accident that lasted for more than an hour as rescue teams worked to help the injured.

The traffic jam stretched for almost a kilometre. Police who man the roadblock next to Cecil Avenue along the highway, had to block traffic and only emergency services were allowed to pass through.

One of the survivors, Mr Xolani Moyo said the family was coming from the burial of their grandmother in Dufuya, Lower Gweru.

“We really don’t know what happened. The driver tried to overtake and the next thing we were involved in an accident. We might have lost other relatives but we are still waiting for authorities to confirm that. We are in pain and shocked at the same time,” said Mr Moyo.-statemedia

Zim Economy In Near Collapse

By A Correspondent- Economists warned Thursday that the fast depreciating Zimbabwe dollar could further push up prices of essential goods and trigger fresh inflationary pressures on the economy.

The economic experts noted that these were the same factors that triggered the 2007/2008 economic meltdown, which ended with a record 231 million per cent inflation, as per official statistics, and the collapse of the Zimbabwe dollar.

Zimbabwe’s currency lost much ground against the United States dollar on both the official and parallel markets in recent weeks partly due to the backlog at the foreign exchange auction system.

This Tuesday, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) said the currency traded at US$1:$105 6965, a 5.8% decline from late week’s US$1:$99 9301 exchange rate on the formal market.

Parallel market rates soared to between US$1:$180 and US$1:$200, from between US$1:$160 and US$1:$170 the previous week.

CEO Africa Roundtable chairman Oswel Binha said the real market is the parallel market which is currently trading at over $200 against the US dollar. He added:

If the situation remains like this, inflation will be way on top of the roof in Zimbabwe, which will see business profitability being affected.

This will erode salaries and affect disposable incomes. The continued depreciation of the Zimbabwe dollar is the manifestation of the insufficiency of the US dollar in the market.

He added that another problem is that costs of production are pegged at the parallel market, but revenue is pegged using the official exchange rate.

Economist Eddie Cross said the inflation had exceeded reasonable levels adding that a certain percentage of it was being imported from abroad because there is high inflation throughout the world.

Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers president Denford Mutashu said the rise collapse of the local currency will affect prices both pegged in ZWL$ and US$ as the US dollar prices have also been going up once the local currency sheds value.

A snap survey conducted by NewsDay showed that by Thursday, prices of basic commodities had increased by between 30% and 50% in the past month.

Hired School Bus Reduced To Ashes At ZCC Shrine

Burnt Bus

By A Correspondent- Danamombe High School’s Yutong bus that had been hired to ferry worshippers to a church service at Mutendi Shrine in Masvingo rural on Sunday was burnt to a shell in a bizarre incident.

The bus which was bought at a cost of over US$145 000 was burnt after a whirlwind swept away fire that was lit by congregants.

The fire was blown onto tents before it leapt onto a kombi which was parked beside the bus resulting in the bus itself catching fire.

The Masvingo provincial police spokesperson could neither confirm nor deny the matter when contacted for comment by The Mirror.

Danamombe head Emmanuel Muvengu confirmed the incident but referred further questions to Chivi District Schools Inspector Isaac Gwamuri.

ZCC Mutendi spokesperson Raymond Muringani confirmed the incident and said negotiations on the way forward between the church and the school are underway. He said:

On October 16 we attended a meeting with the ZCC finance committee and we consulted them making an appeal to Bishop Mutendi for help, parents are angry and bitter because of what happened, said Gurajena.

I can confirm that the bus hired from Danamombe by the ZCC congregation was burnt to ashes at the Mutendi shrine. I do not know how it happened.

The Mirror reported sources as saying the fire started at around 9 AM and burnt tents that were pitched at the shrine before spreading to a Sprinter and the bus.

The fire reportedly engulfed the bus at around 9.25 AM when people had gone to Taberi.

The bus was hired from the school on Saturday 14 October and carried over 60 passengers and it was supposed to return on the 52.3km journey after a week.

Danhamombe High School is a Chivi Rural District Council (RDC) run school.

Danhamombe SDC chairperson Junias Gurajena said the bus did not have full coverage insurance.

Chakwera Unleashes Armed Police On Protesters

By A Correspondent-Police in Malawi yesterday fired teargas to break up an anti-government protest over alleged corruption and economic mismanagement by President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration.

Hundreds of Malawians poured into the streets in Blantyre to demand that Chakwera’s administration act on its election promises that included creating 1 million jobs and ending hunger.

Speaking to Reuters, Bonny Kalindo, a former legislator who led the Friday protests lamented rising food and fuel prices. He said:

We are into the second year and there are still no jobs. The promise of three meals a day has failed to materialise, and instead, prices of fuel, food and cooking oil have skyrocketed.

Friday’s protests reportedly turned violent as a pro-government group also moved in to stop the march across the city.

Some businesses and government buildings were closed as a result.

Chakwera in June 2020 unseated former leader Peter Mutharika in a re-run election after he pledged to curb corruption and rebuild the ailing economy.

But Malawi’s consumer price inflation rose to 9.8% year on year in October from 8.9% in September.

Xenophobia Threats On Zimbos In Limpopo Province

By A Correspondent- South Africans in Limpopo provinces are threatening to kill Zimbabweans after a 36-year-old Zimbabwean man was arrested last week for allegedly kidnapping and killing seven women.

The Zimbabwean man killed seven, including a fellow countrywoman and six South Africans whom he had lured on the pretext that he was offering them jobs.

Themba Dube, who was allegedly involved in a series of kidnappings and murder of his victims between July last year and August this year, was on the run until his arrest this month.
He was arrested after he was found in possession of a suspected stolen cellphone that belonged to one of his victims.

Limpopo spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Ms Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said Dube faces seven charges of kidnapping and seven counts of murder.
The alleged serial killer appeared yesterday at Seshego Magistrate’s Court facing seven counts of murder, kidnapping, robber and defeating the course of justice.
He was remanded in custody to 27 January next year pending further investigations.
Dube’s victims include Sarah Moitswadi Mathiba (42), who was reportedly kidnapped at Lebowakgomo last month. 34-year-old Lesotho national, Moleboheng Mothibeli, who was reported missing in Polokwane in October and Eva Khomotso Makhura (41), who was reported missing at Seshego last month.

Other victims include Mpho Sanah Sinyatsi (34), Andrea Cholo (25), Chisimango Gumbo (48), a Zimbabwean, who was reported missing at Seshego in August and Jane Letswalo (42), whose body was found next to Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Dube’s modus operandi was to lure women to Limpopo with the promise of employment.
“The accused was still in custody when the investigations led to the discovery of seven bodies of women dumped at different locations in Seshego, Polokwane, Mankweng and Westenburg policing areas,” said Malabi-Dzhangi.
She said the following victims had been positively identified by their next of kin. However, forensic investigations are underway to determine if the bodies positively match those of the deceased.
“Police investigations are continuing to determine if the suspect can be linked with other cases. We are appealing to anyone who might have a family member missing around Seshego, Mankweng, Lebowakgomo, Polokwane and surrounding areas to contact their nearest police station,” said Ms Malabi-Dzhangi.
Dube was on police wated list in connection with at least 14 charges of rape and robbery.

Limpopo provincial spokesperson for the SAPS Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the horrific crimes were committed between July last year and August this year.
“It is alleged that the suspect committed these despicable acts in the Tzaneen policing area under Mopani District at Pharare, Mogophong, Mogoloboto and Burgersdorp villages. The female victims aged between 22 and 46 were reportedly lured by the suspect, who falsely advertised non-existent domestic and security employment opportunities on social media, Facebook platform,” Brig Mojapelo said.
He said the suspect patiently waited for the unsuspecting victims at taxi ranks and bus terminals. On their arrival, he would make some excuses and walk with the victims utilising a road that passes through the bush to arrive at their destination.
“He would then ultimately rape and rob them of their belongings and then flee the scene,” said Brig Mojapelo.
After tracking him for three months, officers arrested Dube on 6 November at Letaba hospital.
“This after he was admitted with a gunshot wound allegedly sustained in Burgersdorp village near a graveyard on 2 November 2021,” said Brig Mojapelo.

Mnangagwa Scarf Fetches US$25 000

By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Friday night auctioned his trademark scarf for US$25 000 while his necktie went for US$10 000.
This was at the ED-UNZA (University of Zambia) Scholarship Fundraising dinner he presided over and was graced by some top business leaders at State House in Harare.

His scarf bid for US$25 000 while his necktie fetched US$10 000.

More than US$700 000 and at least US$16 million was raised through bids and pledges from individuals and representatives of the business community at the event.

Mnangagwa had made his scarf – designed along the country’s flag colours – a signature look since he took over as the country’s number one at around the same time this year four years ago.
A symbol of distinctness, as he once explained, Mnangagwa has been ridiculed by opponents for wearing the scarf even during sweltering heat.

Chinese Businessman Invades Mutare Mountain

Mutare City Council yesterday accused Chinese miner, Freestones Mines, of breaching a lease agreement after launching mining operations without notifying the local authority.
Freestones Mines is also accused of carrying out operations on Dangamvura Mountain without an environment impact assessment (EIA) certificate.

This was revealed in a full council meeting held in the eastern border city.

Council acting engineering director Tonderai Sango said he was surprised that the company started operations on Dangamvura Mountain without their knowledge.

“The Chinese miner came and started to work on the mountain without our permission in the process breaching the lease agreement we had with them. I was actually surprised to hear that there were some people doing some works on the mountain that is when we discovered that they there are the Chinese,” he said.

Council spokesperson Sprein Mutiwi said: “What was happening at the mountain was a breach of a lease agreement, but the miner has since stopped operations.”

In a statement, Freestone Mine director Ruoxin Qi said: “Following numerous concerns regarding our preparatory works for quarry mining activities at Dangamvura Mountain as respectable and la- abiding firm, we found it prudent to shed more light concerning the matter.

“We were issued with a lease agreement by the City of Mutare in 2021 to carry out mining activities at stand number 13415 at Dangamvura Mountain after responding to tender.

“For the record, we had not started the mining activities, but we were just doing preparatory work as we waited for the EIA certificate. It is unfortunate the preparatory works were misconstrued as quarry mining activities which is not in the correct picture.” -Newsday

2 Killed In Nyaradzo Bus Accident

TWO people died on the spot while scores were injured yesterday when a haulage truck and a Nyaradzo Funeral Services bus that was carrying mourners collided along the Bulawayo-Harare highway near Cement Siding.

The driver of the truck and a woman in the bus died on the spot, while a number of passengers suffered injuries.

We are in pain and shocked at the same time,” said Mr Moyo.- Chronicle

It’s Emmerson Mnangagwa Who Is Afraid Of By-elections

Tinashe Sambiri| MDC Alliance has dismissed the Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa’s empty bravado on by-elections.

Mr Mnangagwa told his supporters in Beitbridge Zanu PF was ready to trounce opposition in the coming by-elections.

In response MDC Alliance Namibia has described Mr Mnangagwa’s remarks as ” empty, meaningless and insignificant.”

Read statement below :

Choosing not to vote is never a rebellion, it’s surrender-Mdc Alliance Namibia demands reforms!

19 November 2021

Mr Mnangagwa’s utterances before a borrowed crowd in Beitbridge where he commissioned 23 houses for civil servants unraveled his unwillingness to deliver on the much needed comprehensive political and electoral reforms ahead of the impending by-elections and the harmonised elections in 2023. The level of desperation in the Harare regime unearthes its unpreparedness to respect the rule of law and constitutionalism in the motherland. Mr Mnangagwa yesterday said by-elections would go ahead even if the opposition boycotts them to protest his failure to implement reforms that would guarantee free, fair and credible polls. This on its own reflects that the clueless regime is ever desperate to retain power at whatever costs regardless of the citizenry’s audible calls saying #NgaapindeHakeMukomana meaning the People’s President Advocate Nelson Chamisa should find himself in the State House in 2023.

He went on to say, “We are going to have by-elections in 2022 and tinovasvasvanga(we will trounce them). In 2023, we will then have general elections tovarakasha (we will beat them)”. I want to make it categorically clear that the Mdc Alliance never hinted that they will boycott the elections but through its Secretary for Elections Ian Makone , it announced its commitment and dedication confront Zanupf and their surrogates demanding the alignment of the Electoral Act to the 2013 Constitution by bringing the electoral bill to the August House pronto. As a social democratic party, we believe that elections belong to the people and voting is a fundamental part of independence hence the idea of boycotting is a Zanupf ploy to hoodwink the unsuspecting masses.

Moreover, social democrats in Namibia would like to remind citizens that if they don’t vote, they automatically lose the right to complain against endemic corruption practised by Zanupf belly politicians. It should be clear to all change agents that Mr Mnangagwa desires to see them giving up the national democratic revolution resulting in the creation of voter apathy. In constitutional democracy we are convinced that the world is run by those who show up that is why our political generator (The Eagle) President Advocate Nelson Chamisa Wamba Dia Wamba is busy with the citizens interface preparing for those elections. Every right thinking Zimbabwean should wake up and smell the coffee of socio-economic transfiguration.

Boycotting elections is not our objective and I will never be one because our party has already written to ZEC politely requesting a stakeholder meeting to deliberate issues relating to the conduct of elections in Zimbabwe to avert post elections disputes manifesting in rigging and other irregularities. ZanuPF should be cognisant of the fact that Mdc Alliance is busy campaigning in the rural areas where most rigging takes place through high levels of human butchery, intimidation, torture, partisan distribution of food aid and frog-marching of Mdc Alliance members to Zanupf rallies.

In addition , Mdc Alliance has issued , for reference 20 Principles for Reliable, Inclusive and Credible Elections in Zimbabwe. We made it point blank that ZEC should dismiss all the military personnel at the purported independent body, the voters roll should be released on time as stipulated in the supreme law of the country, the apaque procurement of the election equipment should be resisted with equal measure, real time announcement of results among others constitute the our( PRICE). Constitutional democrats should be ready to defend the Constitution against Zanupf shenanigans. Lets all be geared to demand these comprehensive political and electoral reforms as enshrined in our PRICE document.

Voting is our civic right and by virtue of being Zimbabwean citizens, we should freely fulfil our obligation to take part in the national discourse through voting. It is quite pathetic that the authors of our toiling had the guts to blame Mdc Alliance-run local councils for failure to provide efficient services. The irony of the matter is that since Zanupf took over from Ian Douglas Smith, Harare epitomised the capital city of Africa, the currency was stronger than the USD with a stable exchange rate of 1ZWD=2USD and the infrastructure was just perfect 40 years ago, everything is now dilapidated which is a sign that Zanupf politicians are absolutely divorced from the concrete realities of our people. Our locals are affected by Zanupf’s centralisation of power whereby the central government controls all local councils through its corrupt Minister of Local Government. We are revolutionary intellectuals and public thinkers we can’t be flattered by a regime that has started our country down the slopes of hyperinflation.

In a nutshell, Mdc Alliance Namibia would like to send a clear message to George Charamba who claimed that announcement of by-elections by Mnangagwa caught Mdcs by surprise, and unprepared. “Not only are they unprepared and broke ;they mortally fear that a thorough thumping by the ruining Zanupf will remove the benefit of the doubt on which they hoped to fundraise ahead of 2023”,Charamba said. What Charamba should comprehend is that President Advocate Nelson is the darling of the Zimbabwean citizens! Why is Zanupf barricading roads? Why is Zanupf unleashing violence on a prospective loser? Why is Zanupf arbitrarily arresting Mdc Alliance activists leaving Mwonzora guarded by the police during his poorly attended rallies?

It is clear that the Mdc Alliance President Advocate Nelson Chamisa Wamba Dia Wamba is the only game in town saka tichiti Ngaapinde Hake Mukomana. No to boycotting! We shall continue to demand the independence of ZEC. Voting is a constitutional right that cannot be surrendered through a boycott. We need reforms now!

Arrested

State Media – Two people have appeared in court on allegations of money laundering amounting to over US$1 million.

Exam Chaos As Teachers Quit Invigilating

Higher Education Examination Council (Hexco) examinations which began on Monday were yesterday thrown into turmoil after teachers quit invigilating the examinations demanding payment for the services.
This comes as teachers have notified the Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec) of a similar boycott starting Monday when Ordinary and Advanced level examinations kick-off.

Zimsec has refused to pay teachers for invigilation services, claiming the responsibility falls under their employer, the Public Service Commission (PSC).

But the PSC also denied responsibility, shifting blame to the Primary and Secondary Education ministry.

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) secretary-general Raymond Majongwe yesterday confirmed that their members quit invigilating Hexco examinations.

Majongwe said they wrote to PSC chairperson Vincent Hungwe informing him of their plans to also boycott Zimsec examinations.

In the letter, PTUZ told Hungwe that the union was concerned that responsible authorities were distancing themselves from paying teachers to invigilate.

“Mr chairman, you will remember that in our meeting with Zimec, MOPSE, unions and the PSC, you undertook to take up the agreement we reached over payment with the Finance and Economic Development ministry,” PTUZ said.

“It is, therefore, unfortunate that Public Service minister (Paul) Mavima is quoted in a national newspaper as saying that it is in fact the responsibility of the Primary and Secondary Education ministry to create contracts between Zimsec and teachers in relation to invigilation.

“Whatever the case might be, we would like to advise your good offices that our members will no longer be able to invigilate examinations run by Zimsec and Hexco. The no-contract no-invigilation principle has already kicked into action.”

Educators’ Union of Zimbabwe Tapedza Zhou said boycotting examinations was the only way to push authorities to pay teachers for services rendered.

Neither the Primary and Secondary Education ministry nor Zimsec is prepared to own up the responsibility for paying invigilators,” Zhou said.

“However, none of them ever said that invigilators must not be paid. They accept that invigilators must be paid. It’s just that they have forgotten who between themselves have a responsibility to pay invigilators. If we stop invigilating, the father of this baby will soon hand himself over.”

But Primary and Secondary Education ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said the ministry was unmoved by the boycott.

“Invigilation and teaching in class are two separate issues. Invigilation can be conducted by anyone. What is important is that learning is going on well and pupils are catching up on their syllabi, preparing for their exams,” Ndoro said.

“We know teachers are providing quality, relevant and inclusive services to our learners throughout the country, despite those claims that they have withdrawn services.” -Newsday
