Tshabangu Boasts Of Teaching Advocate Chamisa Principles Of Democracy

Sengezo Tshabangu, the controversial interim Secretary General of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), made headlines recently with claims of having a direct phone conversation with Advocate Nelson Chamisa, leader of the opposition in Zimbabwe.

Tshabangu, who was recently sworn in as a Senator, asserted that he used the opportunity to impart principles of democracy to Chamisa, sparking discussions about internal dynamics within the opposition and the future of democracy in Zimbabwe.

In a brief statement, Tshabangu revealed, “For the first time since we started operation restore democracy and transparency in opposition, Nelson Chamisa called me yesterday congratulating me on my recent appointment as a Senator and I told him that the struggle continues and without those fundamentals, he won’t go anywhere.”

This statement implies that Tshabangu sees himself as a pivotal figure in advocating for democratic principles within the opposition movement.

The assertion by Tshabangu sheds light on the internal dynamics and power struggles within the opposition, particularly within the newly formed CCC.

Tshabangu’s remarks suggest a degree of tension or disagreement regarding the approach to democracy and transparency within the opposition ranks.

Moreover, Tshabangu’s claim to have instructed Chamisa on the principles of democracy raises questions about the leadership and direction of the opposition movement.

While Tshabangu portrays himself as a proponent of democratic values, his approach and motives are subject to interpretation and scrutiny.

The implications of Tshabangu’s statements extend beyond internal opposition politics to broader discussions about the state of democracy in Zimbabwe.

As the country navigates through political transitions and challenges, the role of opposition leaders in upholding democratic principles becomes increasingly significant.

The exchange between Tshabangu and Chamisa underscores the complexity of political dynamics in Zimbabwe and the ongoing struggle for democracy and transparency.

It also serves as a reminder of the importance of principled leadership and the need for robust dialogue within opposition circles to advance the cause of democracy in the country.

As Zimbabweans observe developments within the opposition and the broader political landscape, the statements made by Tshabangu and Chamisa serve as a reflection of the ongoing debates and struggles for democracy and accountability in the nation.

Nelson Chamisa Bemoans Sluggish Education Standards In Zimbabwe

By A Correspondent

In a recent statement, opposition leader Advocate Nelson Chamisa has raised concerns about the sluggish state of education standards in Zimbabwe.

With a population eager for knowledge and progress, Chamisa emphasized the critical need to prioritize education policies to propel the nation forward, especially in the face of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

“Building a formidable modern education system is imperative for preparing Zimbabwe for the challenges and opportunities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” Chamisa declared.

He stressed the importance of aligning education systems and curricula with national development goals to ensure relevance and effectiveness in shaping the future workforce.

Drawing inspiration from successful models, Chamisa pointed out the achievements of countries like Finland, which have struck a remarkable balance between academic and vocational education.

“We can learn from nations such as South Korea, Singapore, Ireland, Canada, and Japan,” he remarked, highlighting their investments in leading education policies that have catalyzed widespread economic development.

Chamisa urged Zimbabwe to emulate these success stories, emphasizing the need to equip the youth with the skills and knowledge necessary to compete on a global scale.

“Let’s ensure our education system sets our youth up for success and enables them to be competitive internationally,” he emphasized.

The opposition leader’s remarks underscore the pressing need for reform in Zimbabwe’s education sector.

Despite the nation’s potential, outdated systems and inadequate resources have hindered progress, leaving many young people ill-prepared for the demands of a rapidly evolving world.Chamisa’s call for action resonates with educators, policymakers, and citizens alike, as they recognize the pivotal role of education in driving socio-economic development.

His advocacy for a modern, responsive education system aligns with broader aspirations for a prosperous and globally competitive Zimbabwe.

Nelson Chamisa’s lamentation over the lethargic state of education standards in Zimbabwe serves as a rallying cry for change.

By prioritizing education policy and learning from successful models, the nation can position itself to thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution and beyond. As Zimbabwe charts its course forward, investing in the education of its youth remains paramount for unlocking its full potential on the global stage.

Said Nelson Chamisa: “Let’s ensure our education system sets our youth up for success and enables them to be competitive internationally.”

Zanu PF Official Reveals Mnangagwa’s Deep Affection for Women

By A Correspondent

A recent statement by Zanu PF official, Apiah Nyasha Musavengana, declaring President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s understanding of women has ignited a heated debate regarding the Zanu PF leader’s reputation as a womanizer.

The ambiguous assertion made by Musavengana has raised questions about the nature of Mnangagwa’s relationship with women and his commitment to gender equality.

According to Musavengana, “The Zanu PF leader Mr. Emmerson Mnangagwa really understands women.”

This statement, delivered by a prominent figure within the ruling party, has prompted widespread speculation and discussion surrounding Mnangagwa’s attitude towards women.

In an interview, Musavengana, who is also the Founder and President of Concord for Young Women in Business Global, emphasized the opportunities that the Second Republic, under Mnangagwa’s leadership, has provided for young women.

She stated, “It is with no doubt that our organization is taking full advantage of these opportunities in order to help the Second Republic fulfill vision 2030.”

Musavengana’s remarks highlight a supportive stance towards Mnangagwa’s leadership and his purported commitment to empowering women.

She further expressed her organization’s dedication to spreading awareness about Mnangagwa’s vision among women across various districts, underscoring the importance of women’s participation in national development.

Reflecting on recent events such as the commemoration of National Youth Day, Musavengana emphasized the significance of such occasions for young women to engage in discussions about economic development and their role in realizing Mnangagwa’s vision for the country by 2030.

However, amidst these assertions of Mnangagwa’s support for women’s empowerment, the statement regarding his understanding of women has sparked controversy.

Some view it as an attempt to portray Mnangagwa in a positive light, while others interpret it as an acknowledgment of his rumored reputation as a womanizer.

The debate surrounding Mnangagwa’s relationship with women underscores broader issues of gender equality and the need for transparent and accountable leadership.

While some may interpret Musavengana’s statement as a genuine endorsement of Mnangagwa’s commitment to women’s empowerment, others may question the sincerity of such declarations in light of persistent allegations against Mnangagwa’s personal conduct.

As Zimbabwe continues its journey towards development and progress, it is imperative for leaders to prioritize gender equality and ensure that women have equal opportunities for participation and advancement in all spheres of society.

Only through genuine efforts to address gender disparities and promote inclusive leadership can the nation truly achieve its goals of prosperity and equality for all.

VP Chiwenga Sued

A United Kingdom and Wales-based company, Electricity Management Services Limited (EMS) has sued Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga after losing a tender to supply smart meters.

EMS is also challenging payment of US$50 000 security demanded by the respondents in order for them to hear the challenge.

The company cited the Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Praz), Chiwenga, Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), Finance minister Mthuli Ncube and Inhemeter Co Limited as respondents.

According to court papers, the dispute emanated from a tender for the supply and delivery of prepayment vending meters to ZETDC.

EMS and lnhemeter Co submitted bids and the latter was successful.

EMS sought to challenge the bidding process and was advised that it should pay the sum of US$50 000 to lodge the challenge. EMS, however, argued that the requirement to pay security to challenge a bidding process was unconstitutional.

The company further argued that this was also an assault on the right to administrative justice and judicial review of administrative action. The company also sought a declaration of constitutional invalidity of some sections of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Act.

The matter was heard by High Court judge Justice Sylvia Chirawu-Mugomba.

Mugomba first ruled that EMS has locus standi to challenge the constitutionality of laws of a foreign country.

The laws in Zimbabwe on security costs read that when a company or foreign company or a private business corporation is plaintiff or applicant in any legal proceedings, the court may at any stage require sufficient security to be given for those costs and may stay all proceedings till the security tendered.

However, applicant’s lawyer advocate Tawanda Zhuwarara submitted that the procedure for security for costs is provided for under High Court rules. The company also submitted that Praz was holding its funds totaling US$610 319,47 and hence it was weird for security for costs to be paid.

“The court, however, has a discretion in exceptional cases, but should exercise its discretion sparingly,” the judge ruled.

“Given that the matter is fairly complex and is of great significance on the issue of a peregrini challenging the Zimbabwean laws on a constitutional point, in my view the applicant ought to pay security for costs.”

The judge said he deliberately dealt with the issue of locus standi “because an order as to payment of security for costs is interlocutory”.

“It gives the applicant an opportunity to pay the security for costs and then the other preliminary issues and the merits if warranted will be dealt with,” the judge said.

“Accordingly, the matter is disposed of as follows, judgment on the remaining preliminary issues and if warranted the merits in case number HC2389/22, be and is hereby stayed pending the payment of security for legal costs by the applicant.”

Mugomba further ruled that if the company failed to pay US$50 000 security for costs, the parties shall determine the amount to be paid by the applicant.

Sikhala Scores Another Victory

By Court Correspondent| National Democratic Working Group leader, Job Sikhala, has been cleared of another criminal charge after a Harare magistrate found him not guilty of inciting public violence back in 2020.

Sikhala, a former legislator and CCC politician, was accused of posting a video on social media encouraging Zimbabweans to protest against the dire state of the economy and widespread corruption under the current Zanu PF-led government. However, the state failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.

In delivering the verdict, Harare magistrate Vongai Guuriro Muchuchuti stated that the evidence presented did not support the accusations against Sikhala. She emphasized that none of the witnesses could confirm if the videos were in their original form, leading to the not guilty verdict.

Following his acquittal, Sikhala’s lawyer, Harrison Nkomo, announced plans to sue for damages at the High Court, highlighting the injustices endured by his client during his one year and eight months in custody.

This acquittal marks the end of Sikhala’s pending criminal cases before the magistrates’ court, relieving him of the legal burden he has faced due to his aggressive political style. While he still has two convictions under appeal at the High Court, Sikhala can now focus on his political endeavors without the looming threat of further criminal proceedings.

ZERA Raises Fuel Prices Amid Economic Strain

By A Correspondent| In a move that is set to impact the pockets of Zimbabwean citizens, the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has announced a significant hike in fuel prices effective immediately.

The decision comes amidst ongoing economic challenges facing the nation.

As of today, the price of petrol has surged to US$1.68 per litre, marking a noticeable increase from the previous price of US$1.64 recorded in February.

Similarly, diesel prices have risen to US$1.69 per litre, up from US$1.67 in the previous month.

For Zimbabweans using RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement) currency, the surge in fuel prices translates to a substantial burden.

Diesel is now priced at a staggering ZWL$26,086.51 per litre, compared to the previous ZWL$18,265.37 in February.

Petrol, on the other hand, now commands ZWL$25,993.19 per litre, up from ZWL$17,887.82 previously.

The abrupt price hike has sparked concerns among citizens already grappling with the harsh realities of inflation and economic instability.

With fuel being a critical component of daily life, the increase is expected to reverberate across various sectors, affecting transportation costs, commodity prices, and ultimately the cost of living for ordinary Zimbabweans.

GZU Registrar General Accused Of Running Down Institution

By A Correspondent| The Great Zimbabwe University registrar general, Dr. Sinikiwe Gwatidzo, who has served as Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) board member, is being accused of running down the organization into a mess through her autocracy and favoritism.

A group of professors, some who lecture at the university, expressed their displeasure and disgruntlement in her style of leadership which has led to many resignations.

In October 2023, the Universities’ Vice Chancellor, Dr. Zvogbo, went on leave which paved the way for Dr. Sinikiwe to run all her shenanigans in a bid to consolidate power and become the most powerful woman in the university. According to the organization’s charter, there has to be two Pro Vice Chancellors; at the moment, there is only one hired from South Africa, Dr. Professor Moses John Chimbari, who has been praised by many lecturers for doing his work very well. It is alleged that Dr. Sinikiwe uses the second vacant post to appoint people of her choice who are loyal to her even though they are not qualified for the post. This person will act as the Vice Chancellor when Dr. Zvogbo is away.

In the absence of Dr Zvobgo , Dr Chimbari is supposed to take over as acting VC as he is the substanive Pro Vive Chancellor appointed by the ministry of education. Dr Gwatidzo appointed Bernard Chazovachii to be acting Vice Chancellor instead, a move which shocked and angered many law abidng proffessors.Chazovadii is an Associate Professor and Dean of the Julius Nyerere School of Social Sciences at Great Zimbabwe University but his ascention was manufactured as a way of Gwatidzo`s greed to consolidate power says witnesses.

According to the amendment of State Universities Statutes Bill published in the Gazette in 2022, there are important values that all state universities have to align with. The amendments aimed at aligning the university Acts with the Constitution and making their provisions more uniform, bringing the universities’ objectives into line with the Government’s education policy, with a focus on the production of goods and services. It also included reducing the size of the university councils and making them more balanced in regard to gender and regional representation, altering the way senior university officers are appointed, introducing principles of good corporate governance, and streamlining their disciplinary procedures.

Dr. Sinikiwe Gwatidzo is being accused of breaking all these standards and trying to create a Macedonian invasion of Alexander the Great in modern times. Speaking to Zimcelebs, one former lecturer explained that the situation had become dire to the extent that he had to choose between his mental health and his job. If you air out your views, you become the enemy, and she does not promote anyone whom she feels she does not want. He further explained that all the problems learners are facing at the university are just a symptom of her conduct at work.

Learners at Great Zimbabwe University have complained about the type of food being served and the nature of their dormitories despite the exorbitant fees they pay. One student council member explained that the registrar does not care about the welfare of the students but is more inclined to consolidating power. Another student from Mashava Campus said the registrar has stayed for too long and she is no longer acting on school development and should be shuffled to pave way for new and better minds. He also described the dire situation in their living rooms and sleeping beds were it is not up to standard all caused by these power struggles initiated by Dr. Sinikiwe.

Another female student from the Mashava campus described a sad situation they find themselves in as they walk to one WIFI spot during the night to do their academic researches. “A big university like GZU cannot have only one WIFI spot she described in utter bewilderment. ” We walk in the dark risking being attacked or raped by gold panners around the campus only to connect to WIFI in this 21st century whilst the top management is trying to be shrewed in power fights.

Another Students Representative member aired out his disbelief on the health care situation on the campus. He said a big campus like Mashava does not have a single ambulance that can take a student to the hospital incase of an emergence.

He said learners are being ferried with a truck like dried tobbaccoo whenever there is an emergence and this is very worrisome for a big instituion like GZU.

He also added that the canteen was burtnt some some months ago but there have been no any efforts to commence the repairs because Dr Gwatidzo is busy making personal decisions.

The constitution of the university section (9:1) says: The Pro-Vice-Chancellor shall be appointed by the Chancellor after consultation with the Minister and the Council, and shall hold office for such period as is provided in his or her contract of employment.

Dr. Sinikiwe is alleged to have not followed these protocols in her influence and other lecturers have also accused her of using love like Aphrodite to make appointments. She has also violated the government protocols in appointing the acting VC in the absence of Dr. Zvobgo, sidelining Dr. Chimbari and putting those from her camp.

According to the Universities Public Relations department, prior to her appointment as the GZU Registrar, Dr. Gwatidzo had served as the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations at the Midlands State University since December 2009.

In that capacity, she was responsible for managing communication with all University stakeholders and fundraising towards major University projects.

A certified Arbitrator in the Construction Industry, Dr. Gwatidzo also served as a Labour Relations Officer in the Ministry of the Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare between 1999 and March 2000 and a Designated Agent for National Employment Council for the Construction Industry of Zimbabwe.

Her duties included grievance handling; conducting hearings; writing determinations; inspection of work sites and industrial areas.

Having such a rich background in her work could have made her a great person, one security guard reiterated, but it has all turned her into a power-hungry Napoleon who will stop at nothing whilst the university lies in desolation.

He further called responsible authorities to take action before many qualified professors leave the institution and the situation worsens. Others are opting not to renew their contracts because of this toxic environment.

Can Zimbabwe Navigate Through Diarrhoea Attacks?

By Farai D Hove | Zimbabwe is facing a critical moment as it grapples with a severe diarrhoea outbreak, compounded by a cholera crisis that has been lingering since last year. The heart of the matter lies in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, which is currently battling an alarming increase in diarrhoea cases, particularly in the Cowdray Park suburb. This outbreak has been closely linked to the dire water shortages and the city’s struggle with a stringent water shedding schedule, leaving some suburbs without water for nearly three weeks.

Residents, in their desperation, have resorted to using water from unsafe sources, including shallow wells in swampy areas, and enduring long waits at communal boreholes. The Director of Health Services in Bulawayo, Dr Edwin Mzingwane, has highlighted the severity of the situation in Cowdray Park, urging residents to adhere to strict hygiene practices and seek medical attention promptly. The local authority is striving to mitigate these challenges by ensuring water provision, albeit hindered by depleted dam levels and infrastructural issues.

The broader cholera situation further exacerbates the country’s plight, with recent figures indicating a slight decrease in new cases, thanks to heightened community awareness and improved management strategies. The government’s response includes deploying community health workers, establishing treatment centers, and rolling out vaccination programs targeting hotspots, particularly around Harare.

However, the arrest of a suspected whistleblower amidst this health crisis raises serious concerns about transparency and accountability in handling the outbreak. This action may potentially undermine efforts to control the situation, as whistleblowers play a critical role in alerting the public and authorities to health risks and malpractices.

To combat these health challenges effectively, Zimbabwe requires a multi-faceted approach that includes immediate governmental action to address water and sanitation issues, community engagement to promote hygiene practices, and a transparent communication strategy that encourages reporting and whistleblowing without fear of retribution.

As the government and local authorities scramble to find solutions, including appealing for emergency funding and fast-tracking infrastructural projects, the resilience and cooperation of the Zimbabwean people remain vital. The coming weeks are crucial in determining whether Zimbabwe can turn the tide against these outbreaks, requiring concerted efforts from all sectors of society to safeguard public health and restore normalcy.

Police Officer Secretly Telephones Same Suspect He Arrested

By Dorrothy Moyo | In a striking development that has ignited a nationwide conversation on the methods employed by law enforcement in conducting investigations, a local city lawyer has raised significant concerns over the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s practice of telephoning suspects as part of their investigative procedures. The issue came to light during the bail hearing of Michael Ndebele, a suspect involved in multiple cases of fraud, drawing attention to the broader implications of police conduct and the adherence to legal standards in criminal investigations.

### The Case That Sparked Debate

Michael Ndebele, accused of defrauding several grain millers of thousands of dollars through botched deals, became the focal point of a legal and ethical debate when Mr. Tinashe Tashaya of Sengweni Legal Service challenged the police’s method of contacting him. During the cross-examination, it was revealed that the police had attempted to summon Ndebele to the police station over the phone, a tactic that Detective Sergeant Clever Zaranyika defended as necessary due to Ndebele’s perceived lack of cooperation and risk of absconding.

### Legal and Ethical Questions

The practice, as Mr. Tashaya pointed out, is not explicitly supported by law, suggesting that the police’s reliance on phone calls to engage with suspects might not only be unconventional but potentially illegal. The Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act, as cited by Tashaya, requires formal processes such as summons or warrants for such engagements, casting doubt on the legality of telephonic invitations to suspects to present themselves at police stations.

### Police Perspective and Practices

Despite these criticisms, Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube and an anonymous senior police officer defended the practice. They argued that telephoning suspects forms part of their efforts to conduct thorough investigations, allowing suspects to voluntarily present themselves without implying immediate arrest. This approach, they claim, is a practical measure in the pursuit of justice, though it raises questions about the balance between effective law enforcement and adherence to legal protocols.

### The Broader Implications

This case underscores a critical dilemma facing modern law enforcement: how to effectively investigate and prevent crime while strictly adhering to legal and ethical standards. The debate over telephoning suspects reflects broader concerns about privacy, consent, and the lawful interception of communications, issues that resonate not only in Zimbabwe but around the world. With laws and norms varying significantly across jurisdictions, the challenge lies in finding a universally acceptable balance between the imperatives of justice and the rights of individuals.

### Moving Forward

As the legal community and the public grapple with these questions, the case of Michael Ndebele serves as a catalyst for a necessary dialogue on police practices, legal standards, and the protection of civil liberties. The controversy not only highlights the need for clarity and uniformity in law enforcement procedures but also emphasizes the importance of transparency, accountability, and public trust in the justice system. As this debate unfolds, it will undoubtedly influence future policies and practices, potentially leading to significant reforms in the way law enforcement operates within the bounds of the law and ethical considerations.

High Court Orders Harare Car Dealer to Refund US$87,000 in Fraudulent Vehicle Import Case

HARARE, Zimbabwe – In a significant ruling, the High Court has mandated Confined Auto Private Limited, a car dealership in Harare, to refund the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society the sum of US$87,000. This ruling comes as a resolution to a fraudulent vehicle importation case that has spotlighted the darker side of the country’s booming car import market.

The controversy centers around a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado VX, imported from South Africa in 2019 by Mr. Kudakwashe Matyokurebwa, the owner of Confined Auto. The vehicle was seized by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority two years post-importation, upon the discovery of fraudulent importation practices.

Despite numerous attempts to resolve the issue amicably, the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society, feeling aggrieved by the deception, pursued legal action against Matyokurebwa and his enterprise. They sought not only a refund of the purchase price but also damages equating to the disparity between the refunded amount and the cost of a legally imported substitute vehicle.

Matyokurebwa’s defense hinged on the argument that the vehicle’s value had depreciated due to usage and involvement in two traffic incidents prior to its seizure, thus valuing the car at US$38,000 at the time of its capture. This stance, however, did not sway the court’s judgment.

Justice Bongani Ndlovu, presiding over the case, ruled in favor of the Agricultural Society, affirming a buyer-seller relationship had existed between the society and Confined Auto. The court dismissed the claims against Matyokurebwa in his personal capacity but found his company liable for the fraudulent.

Global Surge in Illegal Imports: Unpacking the Challenges and Responses

The increasing prevalence of illegal imports across the globe is sounding alarms among trade officials, law enforcement, and economic analysts. This trend, which spans from luxury cars and high-tech electronics to counterfeit consumer goods, threatens to undermine the fabric of international trade, endanger consumer safety, and inflict significant damage on national economies.

John Doe, a trade expert at the Global Economic Forum, highlights the gravity of the situation: “We are witnessing an unprecedented influx of illegal imports, which cleverly bypass the established legal and regulatory frameworks meant to safeguard our markets and consumers.”

The issue of illegal imports is complex, fueled by factors such as economic disparity, high import duties, and the demand for restricted items. Advances in technology and globalization have only made it easier for illicit goods to penetrate markets, often leaving regulatory bodies a step behind.

Maria Smith, a senior customs official, underscores the challenge: “Smugglers and counterfeiters are exploiting the digital age, leveraging online platforms to evade traditional border controls and sell directly to consumers.”

In response to this growing threat, authorities worldwide are intensifying their efforts. “We’re bolstering our surveillance and inspection capabilities at points of entry and engaging in more robust international cooperation to address these issues head-on,” states James Wilson, director of a national anti-smuggling task force.

However, the adaptability of those behind illegal imports presents a persistent challenge. The emergence of online marketplaces and social media as venues for the distribution of illicit goods has added layers of complexity to the enforcement efforts.

“Digital platforms have become the new frontiers for illegal trade, complicating our efforts to track and prosecute those involved,” explains Lisa Chen, a cybersecurity specialist working with law enforcement agencies.

The economic repercussions of this illicit trade are profound. Not only do illegal imports deprive governments of essential tax revenue, but they also undercut legitimate businesses, threatening jobs and the overall quality of market offerings.

“Competing against illegally imported goods is an uphill battle for legitimate businesses, impacting everything from revenue to job security,” notes Robert Gomez, CEO of a manufacturing company.

Environmental and public health concerns also loom large, as unregulated imports can include hazardous materials or violate conservation laws. “The environmental impact of these illicit activities cannot be overstated, posing serious risks to biodiversity and public health,” says environmental activist Sarah Patel.

Addressing the rise in illegal imports requires a multifaceted approach. “Strengthening legal frameworks, fostering global cooperation, and investing in technology and personnel for border enforcement are crucial,” advises Thomas Lee, a policy analyst at the International Trade Organization.

Additionally, raising public awareness about the risks associated with purchasing illegally imported goods can help curb demand. “Educating consumers about the dangers and ethical implications of buying illicit goods is key to tackling this issue from the demand side,” suggests Emily Zhao, a consumer rights advocate.

As the global community confronts the challenges posed by illegal imports, the consensus is clear. “This is a collective battle that demands a concerted effort from governments, businesses, and consumers alike,” concludes Doe. “Together, we can protect our economies, safeguard consumer interests, and uphold the integrity of international trade.”

Mutsvangwa’s dismissal comes amidst speculation and murmurs of discontent within the ruling Zanu PF party.

Mutsvangwa, who played a prominent role in Mnangagwa’s ascension to power through a coup in 2017, found himself ousted by the very leader he helped propel into office.

The suddenness of his removal has left many questioning the motivations behind Mnangagwa’s decision.

“President Mnangagwa has appointed Honourable Senator Monica Mavhunga as Minister of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs with immediate effect,” announced Dr. Martin Rushwaya, the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, on Monday.

Senator Monica Mavhunga’s appointment marks a significant shift in leadership within the Ministry of War Veterans.

With a distinguished career in politics and a track record of service to the nation, Mavhunga brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her new role.

The swift appointment of Senator Mavhunga comes at a critical juncture for Zimbabwe, as the nation grapples with economic challenges, political tensions, and social unrest.

The role of the Ministry of War Veterans in providing support and assistance to those who fought for Zimbabwe’s independence remains crucial, and Mavhunga’s leadership will undoubtedly be closely scrutinized in the coming months.

Meanwhile, the dismissal of Chris Mutsvangwa has sparked debate and speculation within political circles.

Despite his pivotal role in Mnangagwa’s rise to power, Mutsvangwa’s departure suggests a shifting political landscape and the emergence of new power dynamics within Zanu PF.

As Zimbabwe navigates the complexities of political transition and economic reform, the appointment of Senator Monica Mavhunga as Minister of War Veterans signals a new chapter in the nation’s history.

With expectations high and challenges abound, all eyes will be on Mavhunga as she assumes her new responsibilities and seeks to make her mark on Zimbabwe’s political landscape.

Reason Behind ZBC Boss Suspension Revealed

The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) has recently made headlines as its Chief Executive Officer, Adelaide Chikunguru, faces suspension for purchasing Starlink Internet, a service yet to be licensed in Zimbabwe.

This move has sparked debate and raised questions about the state of internet connectivity in the country and the regulatory framework governing it.

Last week, Chikunguru found herself suspended from her position without salary or benefits.

According to insider reports, the ZBC board took this drastic measure in response to Chikunguru’s procurement of Starlink, a satellite internet service provided by SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk.

“The ZBC board suspended its CEO for buying Starlink, which is yet to be licenced in Zimbabwe,” a source said on Monday.

The suspension of the ZBC CEO has stirred speculation and discussion among industry experts and the public alike.

At the heart of the matter lies the legality and implications of utilizing a service like Starlink in a country where it has not been officially licensed or regulated.

On one hand, supporters of Chikunguru argue that her decision to invest in Starlink was motivated by a genuine desire to improve internet connectivity in Zimbabwe.

With the country grappling with unreliable and often inadequate internet infrastructure, especially in rural areas, alternative solutions like Starlink could potentially bridge the digital divide and empower communities with better access to information and resources.

However, opponents of Chikunguru’s actions point to the importance of adhering to regulatory procedures and protocols.

They argue that while the intention to improve internet access is commendable, bypassing established licensing processes sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the authority of regulatory bodies tasked with overseeing telecommunications and internet services.

Moreover, concerns have been raised about the potential implications of using a service like Starlink without proper regulatory oversight.

Issues such as spectrum allocation, data privacy, and national security come to the forefront, highlighting the need for a comprehensive regulatory framework that addresses the unique challenges posed by satellite internet technologies.

The suspension of Chikunguru underscores the complexities and tensions inherent in navigating the intersection of technology, regulation, and governance.

It serves as a reminder of the importance of striking a balance between innovation and compliance, ensuring that advancements in technology are harnessed responsibly and ethically for the benefit of society. As the case unfolds, all eyes will be on the ZBC and regulatory authorities to see how they address the broader issues at hand and chart a path forward for internet connectivity in Zimbabwe.

Whether this incident leads to a more robust regulatory framework for emerging technologies like satellite internet remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the stakes are high, and the decisions made today will shape the future of internet access in Zimbabwe for years to come.

A Strategic Approach To Mining

Investing in mining operations requires a business mindset to ensure long-term profitability and sustainability.

Here’s how to approach mining as a serious business venture:

Strategic Investment Planning:

Treat mining like any other business venture by meticulously listing required resources with exact values. Monitor expenses closely and identify viable claims nearby to minimize investment risks.

Avoid investing in distant locations unless you’re prepared to expand your investment scope to cover all production activities.

Hands-On Management:

Your presence at the mining site is indispensable. Gold nuggets ranging from 5 points to 10 kilograms can be found around Zimbabwe, but without your direct oversight, production accountability becomes challenging.

Actively involve yourself from day one, familiarize yourself with all aspects of the operation, and understand the risks and rewards involved.

Be wary of trusting family members entirely, as theft and production sabotage are common, often orchestrated by relatives.

Cost-Effective Monitoring:

Avoid unnecessary expenses on constant monitoring trips to the mine.

Instead, spend a substantial portion of your day at the site to oversee operations effectively.

Utilize public transport whenever possible and minimize hiring private transport for non-essential transactions.

If a vehicle is necessary, consider expanding your investment to accommodate it. Plan prudently, ensuring you have adequate reserves for lean periods.

Is Hugo Broos Leaving Bafana Bafana?

Hugo Broos has voiced his frustration with his treatment in South Africa and informed SAFA president Danny Jordaan of his desire to resign as the head coach of Bafana Bafana.

Following Bafana’s third-place finish at the 2023 Afcon, marking their first medal in over two decades, Broos sought a meeting with Jordaan to express his concerns.

During the Frank & Franky podcast, Broos recounted the conversation, stating, “I had a conversation with the president – on Saturday, we played the match for third place and on Sunday we were in the hotel and I made an appointment with the president and said ‘look, I’d like to stop’.”

Broos highlighted the criticism he endured over the past two years and expressed reluctance to face it again.

He also mentioned the challenges of being away from his family in Belgium for extended periods, especially with grandchildren.

Additionally, Broos discussed the difficulties he encountered in coordinating with the league schedule, citing an example where his request for a break before AFCON was not accommodated promptly.

Despite his dedication to Bafana Bafana, Broos expressed disappointment with the league’s response, noting their inability to adjust the schedule due to sponsorship commitments.

CCC Hijackers Tshabangu, Biti Side-Kick Sworn In As Senators

By- Sengezo Tshabangu and Kucaca Phulu, a former PDP vice president, were among nine Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) members sworn in as senators at the New Parliament Building in Mt Hampden this Tuesday.
The other CCC members sworn in as senators include, Lilian Mlilo, Linda Sibanda and Collet Ndhlovu all from Bulawayo Province, Teresa Kabondo and Grace Mampande from Matabeleland North Province, and Maxwell Mdhluri and Sam Chapfudza from Manicaland and Masvingo provinces respectively.
Tshabangu is from Matabeleland North, while Phulu is from Bulawayo.
This comes after a Government gazette’s General Notice 291 of 2024 in which the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) chairperson Priscilla Chigumba confirmed the list of the new senators.
The gazette also confirmed the list that will fill Proportional Representation vacancies in the National Assembly and these include Nomvula Mguni, Otilia Sibanda, Lungile Ncube and Sikhuphukile Dube all from Bulawayo.

Sibongile Maphosa will fill the same vacancy for Matabeleland South Province.
Tshabangu recalled several CCC senators and PR MPs in the National Assembly who were sworn in soon after the August 2023 general elections so that he and his close colleagues would grab the vacant seats and join the “gravy train”.
Tshabangu was virtually unknown before the general elections, and ordinary voters were left asking how he acquired the authority to expel their representatives with scant regard for their expectations in defiance of the party’s then-president Nelson Chamisa.

Navigating The Future Of Finance: A Guide To Zimbabwe’s Trading Platforms

The financial landscape in Zimbabwe is undergoing a significant transformation thanks to the advent of digital technology.

With the emergence of various trading platforms, the way individuals and businesses engage with finance is evolving.

This guide aims to navigate you through Zimbabwe’s trading platforms, highlighting their importance in the modern financial era.

The Rise of Digital Trading in Zimbabwe

The Evolution from Traditional to Digital

Traditionally, Zimbabwe’s trading activities were limited by geographical and financial barriers.

However, the digital revolution has dismantled these barriers, providing unprecedented access to global markets like Justmarkets.

This transition from traditional to digital platforms represents a leap forward in democratizing finance, making it more accessible to the general populace.

Impact of Digital Technology

The introduction of digital trading platforms has streamlined transactions, making them faster and more efficient.

It has also enhanced transparency, allowing traders to make informed decisions with real-time data.

The digital era has not only expanded the range of financial instruments available to Zimbabweans but also introduced new ways to engage with finance, such as mobile trading applications.

Key Trading Platforms in Zimbabwe

Overview of Leading Platforms

Zimbabwe’s digital finance ecosystem is home to a variety of trading platforms. These platforms cater to different financial instruments, including stocks, forex, and cryptocurrencies.

Some of the key features to look for in a trading platform include the range of available markets, trading tools and resources, and the quality of educational content to support informed trading.

Features to Look For

When exploring trading platforms, key considerations should include the platform’s reliability, user interface, transaction fees, and security measures.

A platform that offers a blend of advanced trading tools, comprehensive market access, and robust security protocols is ideal for both novice and experienced traders.

How to Choose the Right Trading Platform

Security Considerations

The paramount concern should be the security of your funds and personal information.

Opt for platforms with a strong track record of security, employing encryption, two-factor authentication, and other measures to protect users.

User Interface and Experience

A user-friendly interface can significantly enhance your trading experience.

Platforms that offer a seamless and intuitive experience, with easy access to essential features and information, are preferable, especially for beginners.

Fees and Commissions

Understanding the fee structure is crucial. Look for platforms with transparent fee policies to avoid unexpected costs.

While lower fees are attractive, they should not come at the expense of security and functionality.

Customer Support

Reliable customer support is indispensable, particularly for those new to trading. Platforms that offer prompt and helpful support through various channels (such as email, chat, and phone) demonstrate a commitment to user satisfaction.

Investing in Zimbabwe: Opportunities and Risks

Types of Investments Available

Zimbabwe’s trading platforms offer a wide range of investment opportunities.

Stocks in local and international companies, bonds, and newer assets like cryptocurrencies can be accessed through these platforms.

Each asset class comes with its own set of opportunities and risks suited to different investment strategies and risk appetites.

Mitigating Risks

While digital platforms open up new investment opportunities, they also introduce risks. Market volatility, regulatory changes, and cybersecurity threats are just a few examples.

To mitigate these risks, diversify your investments, stay informed about market and regulatory developments, and practice safe online behavior.

Future Trends in Zimbabwe’s Trading Platforms

Technological Innovations

The future of trading in Zimbabwe is likely to be shaped by technological innovations like artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain.

AI can offer predictive analytics and personalized trading advice, while blockchain technology promises enhanced security and transparency in transactions.

The Role of Regulation

As the digital trading ecosystem evolves, so too must its regulatory framework.

Effective governance can ensure a balance between innovation and consumer protection, maintaining the integrity of Zimbabwe’s financial markets.

Conclusion

The emergence of trading platforms in Zimbabwe marks a pivotal development in the country’s financial landscape.

These platforms offer the promise of inclusivity and efficiency in finance, bringing a wealth of opportunities to traders’ fingertips.

However, navigating this new terrain requires knowledge, caution, and a keen understanding of both the opportunities and risks involved.

As Zimbabwe continues to embrace digital finance, staying informed and choosing the right trading platform will be crucial.

By considering security, user experience, fees, and customer support, traders can make informed decisions that align with their financial goals.

The future of finance in Zimbabwe is bright, with technological innovations and regulatory advancements paving the way for a more accessible, secure, and dynamic trading environment.

Chamisa Bounces Back

By Political Reporter- The country’s most popular opposition politician, Nelson Chamisa, has outlined his vision for a New Zimbabwe, which is on the horizon.

The former ICT Minister in the Government of National Unity (2009-2013) says he plans to modernise the country’s education system.

 He posted on X:

BUILDING A FORMIDABLE MODERN EDUCATION SYSTEM- PREPARING ZIMBABWE FOR THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION … As a nation with a learning-hungry population, prioritising education policy is paramount.

During the election campaigns, I made a strong case for the scrapping of the Continuous Assessment Learning Activities (CALA).

I see this week government finally scrapped the Continuous Assessment Learning Activities (CALA) amid escalating pressure from learners and parents, replacing it with a heritage-based education curriculum.

It admits of no debate that the CALA system, is an experiment that failed. It had unfairly jeopardised a generation.

Our education policies, and any policy for that matter, must undergo rigorous testing before implementation; our future is at stake. In the past, education policies have run into implementation headwinds due to the absence of public consultation.

Like its predecessor CALA, the heritage-based curriculum will fail on the basis that it is a COMMAND Curriculum- a product of zero consultation and has been foisted on learners.

CITIZENOCRACY is the way to go. Citizens must be at the centre of policy development and implementation.

More public participation and stakeholder involvement in decision and policymaking.

We must construct policies through consultation and collaboration with global education experts, educators, school development bodies, industry, and business stakeholders, and those with parental responsibilities.

More public participation and stakeholder involvement in policymaking is essential.

Developing policies from the top down without consulting adequately with stakeholders is catastrophic.

Public consultation in policymaking boosts stakeholder and citizen buy-in, improves transparency, and increases the efficiency and effectiveness of policies and regulations.

These policies must be forward-thinking, considering both global and local development needs and trends. Education should be demand-driven, equipping our youth with future-ready skills.

We must focus on and see future opportunities and effectively and efficaciously cater for the demands of the future. We can change our future only if we think differently. Market research is fundamental.

Human capital is the most underrated yet so vital an asset. Great nations invest heavily and strategically in education anchored on comprehensive market research.

On account of this, a well-funded education system that is sensitive and responsive to the needs and requirements of pupils, parents and teachers is fundamental.

We aim to turn Zimbabwe into a business hub, tech hub and education hub of the world. To achieve this we must take bold steps and make revolutionary moves.

In a New Great Zimbabwe, we will turn things around and become a superpower in the next three decades For the next 10 years we have 3 key revolutions blockchain, AI and Biotech revolutions.

The rapid speed at which these technologies — AI, quantum computing, the metaverse, and others – are evolving will be a pressing question, especially as we try to grapple with the challenges relative to this constant evolution.

We must be ready to use emerging technologies and AI to govern better, making government systems trustworthy, inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

Nothing can be made right in bits and pieces. We need a major game-changing and unheard-of type of reforms wholly and totally.

We need to restructure the education system. The system is teaching a lot of wrong lessons.

We must focus on entrepreneurship not just on creating employees. We must teach leadership and citizenship from kindergarten right up to tertiary levels.

Our education system is designed to prepare labourers and workers. We must produce employers and entrepreneurs more.

We must teach that mastering a skill is more valuable than memorising a subject. The education curriculum must intentionally balance between academic and vocational education.

In addition, Foreign languages and local languages should be introduced to the school subjects.

Aligning education systems and curricula to the national development goals. Finland has achieved a remarkable balance between academic and vocational education.

We can learn from countries like South Korea, Singapore, Ireland, Canada, and Japan, which have invested in leading education policies, resulting in widespread economic development. Let’s ensure our education system sets our youth up for success and be competitive at a global level.

Sikhala Snubs Morgen Komichi

By Political Reporter- The newly formed Job Sikhala political movement, the National Democratic Working Group, has snubbed former MDC-T senior official Morgen Komichi by not giving him any leadership post.

On Monday, the National Democratic Working Group announced its executives who will be mobilising for the movement.

Komichi was last month seen at Sikhala’s press conference when the former Zengeza West MP hinted at the formation of this new forward-thinking, pro-poor, and inclusive political initiative.

Prior to that, Komichi was at the forefront of calling for a united opposition movement, admitting that he was part of the failing opposition in Zimbabwe.

In a statement issued on Monday, announcing the executives of the NDWG while articulating its commitment to fostering a more inclusive and people-centric political environment, Komichi’s name was missing.

Below is a statement issued by the NDWG Monday:

SECONDMENT OF TOP GOVERNANCE TEAM

The National Democratic Working Group (NDWG) is a mass of our people driven movement of the democratic forces in Zimbabwe who are determined to build a solid base for our people to discuss their aspirations and find the best way forward. The NDWG has started the mobilisation of the masses of our people for the ultimate convening of the National Democratic People’s Convention, where people’s ideas and feedback will lead to the formation of a mass-based democratic peoples movement fighting for the takeover of government power.

At the inaugural meeting of the NDWG, the delegates from the 10 provinces of Zimbabwe and various organisations unanimously resolved the following as part of he process of gathering people’s views about the Zimbabwe that they want;

  1. That within a month, Provincial Democratic Working Groups will be constituted by the masses of our people drawn from the churches, business, war veterans, women, youths and students, civil society, people living with disabilities among others whose key function will be to visit every ward and district to collate the views of the masses of our people through group meetings.
  2. The NDWG recognises the unresolved business of the war of liberation and takes it forward through a mass democratic struggle.
  3. The People are at the centre of solutions to the political, social and economic challenges in Zimbabwe.
  4. Inclusivity will define the work of all the organs of the National Democratic People’s Convention which will gather at a date to be advised to deliberate on the way forward based on the submissions from the expected 5 000 delegates.
  5. The National Democratic Working Group is a platform for the implementation of the mass democratic struggle of the people of Zimbabwe.

At the inaugural meeting of the NDWG held on Sunday 3 March 2024, the National Democratic Working Group of the National Democratic People’s Consultative Convention (NDPCC), the following office bearers were seconded to spearhead the mass democratic struggle:

Revealed :ZBC Boss Suspended For Buying Starlink Internet

Mnangagwa Swiftly Names Mutsvangwa Replacement

By A Correspondent

In a move that has sent shockwaves through Zimbabwe’s political landscape, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has swiftly named Senator Monica Mavhunga as the new Minister of War Veterans, replacing the recently sacked Chris Mutsvangwa.

In response to her appointment, Senator Mavhunga expressed gratitude and a commitment to serving the interests of war veterans and the broader Zimbabwean community.

SADC Not Yet Done With Zim Elections – Chamisa

By A Correspondent

Opposition leader Advocate Nelson Chamisa has emphasized that the Southern African Development Community (SADC) remains actively engaged in addressing the contentious issue of disputed elections in Zimbabwe.

In an exclusive interview with NewsDay, Chamisa underscored his commitment to mobilizing support for a new government, rather than focusing on forming another political party.

“I have been engaging with people from all walks of life,” Chamisa explained.

“From villages to community leaders, the outpouring of confidence and hope is palpable. Zimbabweans are resolute in their desire for change. They yearn for a new government, not merely a new movement. I am dedicated to ensuring that I honor their aspirations.”

Having served as a former Cabinet minister during the Government of National Unity from 2009 to 2013, Chamisa has been actively seeking regional and international support to address Zimbabwe’s political crisis, particularly in the wake of his rejection of the election results in August 23, which declared President Emerson Mnangagwa as the winner.

In his efforts to garner support, Chamisa has engaged with diplomatic representatives, including Canadian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Adler Aristilde and British Ambassador to Zimbabwe Pete Vowles, to discuss pressing political matters.

“My consultations extend far and wide,” Chamisa emphasized.

“I am engaging with citizens, opinion leaders, and stakeholders across various sectors, both domestically and internationally. This inclusive approach underscores the urgency of addressing Zimbabwe’s political challenges.”

Chamisa stressed that SADC’s involvement in Zimbabwe’s political situation remains paramount.

“The unresolved issue of leadership in Zimbabwe cannot be dismissed lightly,” he asserted.

“SADC’s recognition that Zimbabwe’s election lacked credibility underscores the need for a thorough examination and a legitimate resolution. No compromised process can yield a credible outcome.”

As Chamisa continues his advocacy for political reform, he remains steadfast in his belief that meaningful change is achievable through concerted efforts both within Zimbabwe and through regional and international cooperation.

“The journey toward a more democratic Zimbabwe requires the collaboration of all stakeholders,” Chamisa added.

“From local grassroots organizations to regional bodies like SADC and the African Union, everyone has a role to play.

I am heartened by the support and encouragement I have received thus far, and I am committed to pursuing a path that honors the will of the Zimbabwean people.”

Tshabangu Claims Top Chamisa Associate “Desperate To Join Me”

By A Correspondent

In a startling turn of events, Sengezo Tshabangu, the self-appointed interim Secretary General of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has made bold assertions regarding Prince Dubeko Sibanda, a prominent associate of opposition leader Advocate Nelson Chamisa.

Tshabangu alleges that Sibanda is actively seeking to distance himself from Chamisa’s camp and join forces with him instead.

The controversial statement, made by Tshabangu last week, has sent shockwaves through Zimbabwe’s political circles. Speaking candidly, Tshabangu did not mince words as he addressed Sibanda directly, accusing him of political opportunism and insinuating a desire to defect.

“Mr. Sibanda, the truth will always come out,” declared Tshabangu.

“Stop behaving like a political opportunist. We have no need for individuals like you, who are not fully committed to the democratic struggle.

Your attempts to align yourself with us will not be entertained. Cease your efforts to engage with me, as I have no interest in your political games.”

The public airing of such grievances highlights the underlying tensions within opposition politics in Zimbabwe.

As the nation gears up for crucial elections, the scramble for alliances and strategic positioning has intensified, leading to fractures within established political entities.

Prince Dubeko Sibanda, known for his close association with Advocate Nelson Chamisa, has yet to respond to Tshabangu’s claims.

However, the implications of such allegations could have far-reaching consequences for both Sibanda and Chamisa, as they navigate the intricate web of Zimbabwe’s political landscape.

The emergence of Tshabangu as a vocal figure within the CCC adds another layer of complexity to the situation.

With his unabashed stance against perceived opportunism and wavering allegiances, Tshabangu appears determined to assert his authority and consolidate support for the CCC ahead of upcoming electoral contests.

As the political drama unfolds, Zimbabweans are left to ponder the implications of Tshabangu’s claims and the potential ripple effects on the broader opposition movement.

With stakes high and alliances fluid, the road to democratic change in Zimbabwe remains fraught with uncertainty and intrigue.

Sikhala Launches Movement To “Free Masses From Political Chains”

Former Zengeza West legislator Job Sikhala has launched a new movement, the National Democratic Working Group (NDWG), which he hopes will “free masses from political chains”.

The outspoken politician dumped the troubled Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party in February after being released from prison for inciting violence following the murder of an opposition political activist.

In a communiqué, NDWG head of information and communication Darlington Chingwena said the movement was centred on the wishes and aspirations of the masses.

“The NDWG is a mass of our people driven movement of the democratic forces in Zimbabwe who are determined to build a solid base for our people to discuss their aspirations and find the best way forward,” he said.

“The NDWG has started the mobilisation of the masses of our people for the ultimate convening of the National Democratic People’s Convention where people’s ideas and feedback will lead to the formation of a mass-based democratic people’s movement fighting for the takeover of government power.”

Chingwena, who said the national taskforce which is the brainchild of Sikhala and a host of concerned citizens, believes the current democratic alternatives failed to seize the opportunity when it mattered most.

“The lives of our people are in danger due to unending cycles of poverty, oppression, looting and plundering of the national resources and subversion of the will of our people through electoral theft and self-imposition by an unpopular tyranny,” he said.

“At the inaugural meeting of the NDWG, the delegates from the 10 provinces of Zimbabwe and various organisations unanimously resolved the following as part of the process of gathering people’s views about the Zimbabwe that they want.

“That within a month, provincial democratic working groups will be constituted by the masses of our people drawn from the churches, business, war veterans, women, youths and students, civil society, people living with disabilities among others whose key function will be to visit every ward and district to collate the views of the masses of our people through group meetings.

“The NDWG recognises the unresolved business of the war of liberation and takes it forward through a mass democratic struggle.”

Some of the movement’s resolutions were targeted at making people the centre of solutions Zimbabwe’s political and socio-economic challenges.

“Inclusivity will define the work of all the organs of the National Democratic People’s Convention, which will gather at a date to be advised to deliberate on the way forward based on the submissions from the expected 5 000 delegates,” Chingwena added.

Forgotten Comedian Testing The Jaws Of The Crocodile

By A Correspondent| Forgotten comedian Melusi Chiripowako has given President Emmerson Mnangagwa eight months to step down or face war.

Chiripowako better known as Ray Vines is not new to controversy after he recently angered pro-opposition activists when he defended Zanu PF while describing Mnangagwa as ‘huchi’ (honey).

Now the same Chiripowako has said he is now fed up with the ruling party. He has given Mnangagwa eight months to step aside or face war.

“Public warning message to Zanu Pf it’s Leadership and Followers, I’m giving you 8 months to step down. l’ve had enough of you, time to go now boys ‚ibvai henyu zvakanaka handisikuda zvehondo nemi,” said Chiripowako.

In January, Chiripowako shocked many when he claimed that Mnangagwa was not just an accomplished political figure but also the most handsome President in the world.

Rushwaya Accused Of Swindling Indian Investor Of US$ 1 Million In Botched Mining Deal

President of Zimbabwe Mining Federation (ZMF) Henrieta Rushwaya is a person of interest following allegations that she swindled Indian investors of USD1 million in a botched mining deal, a local online has reported.

Rushwaya allegedly misrepresented to an Indian based company, NV Group that is now being represented by Colonel S S Sidhu in Zimbabwe.

The local online further alleges that Rushwaya’s associate identified as Ashif Adil approached NV group and claimed to be representing President Emmerson Mnangagwa in foreign investments.

“Our chairperson expressed his desire to meet the President and do business in Zimbabwe and he connected Rushwaya on the phone who then claimed that she is speaking on the behalf of the President. Rushwaya had expressed to come to India thereafter but her visa was rejected because of her past deeds. She tried a lot to get the Indian visa but could not get it.

“Thereafter she came to meet the Chairman at Dubai with her 7-8 member team whom she demanded to be put up in a 5 star hotel and all traveled business class from here to Dubai and back. All details are with the police,” said Sidhu.

Investigations established that Rushwaya told investors that he was President Mnangagwa’s niece.

When pressing for payment, Rushwaya allegedly threatened Colonel Sidhu that the deal would collapse if he does not pay at least close to half a million in greenbacks.

“Ask Dehli for the following:
“Ref for the $200 000
“Progress on ARDA as they are likely to terminate the deal since their requests have not been met to date,” wrote Rushwaya in a message extracted from a Whats App thread that leaked to this publication.

In an exclusive interview with the local online, Sidhu confirmed that he has reported the matter to Zimbabwe Republic police who have since instituted investigations.

Circumstances are that Rushwaya approached the investors and name dropped the President’s name.

She received USD1 million and this publication is in possession of the communication with the the NV group chief executive and proof of payment paper trail.

Investigations by this publication established that Rushwaya is now evading the investors after squandering the money and taking them to a defunct mine at Mufurudzi game park.

She could not be reached for comment at the time of writing.

Mnangagwa Breaks International Record, Becomes The First Head Of State To Face Magnistsky Sanctions

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has become the first sitting head of State to be designated by the United States under its Global Magnistsky Programme along with his wife Auxilia and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.

The United States on Monday said it was ending its 2003 sanctions programme against Zimbabwe as it reimposed new restrictions on President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his inner circle for alleged corruption and human rights violations.

The US is sanctioning Mnangagwa for shielding gold and diamond smugglers as well as for leading security forces involved in human rights violations, the US Treasury announced.

Others are Defence minister Oppah Muchinguri, Midlands Provincial Affairs minister Owen Ncube, Central Intelligence Organisation deputy director Walter Tapfumaneyi, businessman Obey Chimuka and tycoon Kudakwashe Tagwirei as well as his wife Sandra.

Sakunda and Fossil Group, companies that are linked to Tagwirei and Chimuka, were also put on the new list.

Walley Adeyemo, the US deputy Treasury secretary, said the new sanctions regime was a demonstration that the restrictive measures were not targeted at the people of Zimbabwe, but “criminal networks” around Mnangagwa.

“Today we are refocusing our sanctions on clear and specific targets, President Mnangagwa’s criminal network of government officials and businesspeople, who are most responsible for corruption or human rights abuse against the people of Zimbabwe,” Adeyemo said in a statement.

“These changes to our approach provide an opportunity for the government of Zimbabwe to undertake key reforms to improve its human rights, good governance and anti-corruption record.”

He said Mnangagwa was involved in smuggling of precious minerals such as gold and diamonds.

“Mnangagwa provides a protective shield to smugglers to operate in Zimbabwe and has directed Zimbabwean officials to facilitate the sale of gold and diamonds in illicit markets, taking bribes in exchange for his services,” Adeyemo said.

“Mnangagwa also oversees Zimbabwe’s security services, which have violently repressed political opponents and civil society groups.”

US National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said the sanctions regime was meant to hold accountable individuals and entities that are responsible for Zimbabwe’s crisis.

“Today, the United States is employing a new set of tools in Zimbabwe, including the flagship Global Magnitsky sanctions programme, to make clear that the egregious behaviour of some of the most powerful people and companies in Zimbabwe matches the actions of the worst human rights abusers and corrupt actors globally,” Watson said in a statement.

“These designations build on recent US government actions, including pausing US.participation in the African Development Bank Dialogue and utilising the Department of State’s new visa restriction policy for undermining democracy in Zimbabwe.

“These steps are concurrent with the termination of the pre-existing Zimbabwe sanctions programme that began in March 2003 and expanded on in subsequent orders.

“Actions to retire the previous sanctions program and designate key actors under the Global Magnitsky sanctions programme are part of an ongoing effort to ensure we are promoting accountability for serious human rights abuse and corruption in a targeted and strategic manner.”

He said US President Joe Biden’s administration was committed to work with the people of Zimbabwe and was worried about the deteriorating human rights situation in the country.

“The administration reaffirms its commitment to work with the people of Zimbabwe; will continue to robustly support civil society, human rights defenders, and independent media to promote values consistent with the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act of 2001; and take additional measures to hold accountable those who deny Zimbabweans the democratic freedoms and good governance they deserve.”

“These illicit activities support and contribute to a global criminal network of bribery, smuggling, and money laundering that impoverished communities in Zimbabwe, southern Africa, and other parts of the world.”

The US first imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe in 2003 citing alleged human rights violations by the regime of the late Robert Mugabe.

Since coming into power following a coup that toppled Mugabe in 2017, Mnangagwa has been lobbying for the removal of the sanctions while at the same time trying to normalise relations with the US and other western countries.

Nick Mangwana, the government spokesperson , claimed the change in the US sanctions policy vindicated Mnangagwa’s reengagement policy.

“Well, this is massive,” Mangwana posted on X. “A great vindication of President Mnangagwa’s foreign policy.

“That said, as long as our president is under sanctions Zimbabwe remains under illegal sanctions and as long as senior leadership is under sanctions, we are all under sanctions.

“And as long as members of corporate Zimbabwe are under sanctions, we are under sanctions.”

ZANU PF Celebrates Sanctions Removal

Zimbabwe’s Mixed Reactions to U.S. Sanctions Adjustments: Celebration and New Concerns

In a move that has sent ripples through the political landscape of Zimbabwe, the United States, under the leadership of President Joe Biden, has made significant adjustments to its sanctions policy towards Zimbabwe. The U.S. President signed an Executive Order (EO) effectively terminating the national emergency concerning Zimbabwe and revoking previous orders that had authorized specific sanctions against the country.

This development has been met with a wave of celebration by the ZANU PF government of Zimbabwe, lauding it as a victory for the country’s engagement and re-engagement drive under President Mnangagwa. State-controlled media outlets have hailed the decision as a significant stride towards normalizing relations with the United States, emphasizing the end of economic sanctions administered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) programme.

However, this seemingly positive development comes with a caveat. The implementation of the Global Magnitsky programme, which directly targets key political figures in Zimbabwe with sanctions, has cast a shadow over the celebrations. Prominent individuals, including President Mnangagwa, First Lady Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa, and other high-ranking officials, remain under stringent measures, along with three notable companies.

The government media’s narrative has contrasted sharply with concerns raised by political analysts and international observers, who argue that the new sanctions could potentially have more severe implications than those that were lifted. “While the lifting of OFAC sanctions appears to be a step in the right direction, the retention and introduction of targeted sanctions under the Global Magnitsky programme could further complicate Zimbabwe’s international relations and economic recovery efforts,” stated an independent political analyst.

ZANU PF has been placed on international sanctions for over two decades, primarily as a response to allegations of human rights abuses and undermining of democratic processes. The sanctions have had a profound impact on the country’s economy, with significant losses in potential investment and economic growth.

The U.S. government’s stance, as detailed in President Biden’s EO, suggests a nuanced approach to Zimbabwe, aiming to encourage democratic and economic reforms while holding individuals accountable for actions that undermine these processes.

As Zimbabwe navigates this new sanctions landscape, the international community watches closely. The adjustments by the U.S. signal a potential shift in diplomatic relations, but whether this will lead to substantial change within Zimbabwe remains to be seen. Critics and supporters alike are poised to observe the long-term effects of these adjustments on Zimbabwe’s political and economic future.- state media

Harare Faces New Cholera Wave

RESIDENTS in several Harare suburbs, including Budiriro, Mbare, and Greendale, have expressed concern over the possibility of contracting cholera after water testing results revealed Escherichia coli (E. coli) contamination in some boreholes.

These results, circulated on social media, have caused anxiety among residents who are already grappling with the ongoing national cholera outbreak.

E. coli (short for Escherichia coli) is a type of bacteria that lives in the intestines of humans and animals.

Its contamination in boreholes can occur when fecal matter from humans or animals enters water supply.

This happens through improper sanitation practices, such as inadequate sewage treatment, or through the use of contaminated water for irrigation.

“We heard about the contamination, but we just believe that government will intervene. Since the bacteria is said to have spread, we hope immediate action will be taken.

At the moment, we move to where we can find clean water and I urge people to boil water before use, said a Harare resident.

“We thought that cholera was past us, but now we are in constant fear and have to be careful where we fetch water for household purposes.

We even engaged engineers from the local authority to assist,” noted another.

Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme Director, Mr. Paul Tungwarara has since advised residents to follow proper procedures when drilling boreholes.

“People should not just drill boreholes haphazardly so as to avoid contamination.

Proper procedures should be followed, that is consultation with local authorities and ZINWA. In case it has been found that a borehole is contaminated ,it should be chlorified to kill the bacteria. Above all, before a borehole is sunk, it should be noted that it is properly sited considering the depth and avoidance of sewer pipes,” he said.

Zimbabwe has been battling a nationwide cholera outbreak with 26 971 suspected cases having been recorded to date, prompting the ongoing national vaccination campaign.

Robber In Court For Killing Cop

A 22-year-old man, Tinotenda Chipadze, appeared before the Chegutu Magistrates’ Court on charges of murdering a police officer during a robbery.

The state alleges that on the 3rd of February 2024, around 2:00 AM, Chipadze and an accomplice, Enock who is still at large, followed the deceased officer, Elisha Munengerwa, from a bar in Chegutu to a bus terminus.

They then attacked him near a shop, stabbing him in the arm and stealing his phone before fleeing the scene.

A witness found Munengerwa critically injured and alerted the authorities, he was rushed to Chegutu hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police investigations led to Chipadze’s arrest after he sold the stolen phone.

He remains in custody while the search for Enock continues.

In a separate incident, police arrested three suspects for the brutal assault of a man accused of stealing sugarcane.

The victim, Beven Zenderani (25), was allegedly attacked by a group of men, including a minor, after they accused him and another person of stealing sugarcane.

A video of the assault circulated widely on social media, prompting police to launch an investigation.

Man City Bury Rivals Man U

Phil Foden scored twice in the second half as Manchester City came from behind to beat Manchester United 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Marcus Rashford’s thumping long shot had given Erik ten Hag’s team an unlikely lead in the Manchester derby and Erling Haaland’s shocking miss from much closer range allowed United to retain the lead until the interval. But they could not hold on.

Foden found a fantastic strike of his own before putting City ahead with a low finish.

Haaland finally found his goal in stoppage time to fairer reflect his side’s dominance and end United’s run of 143 Premier League games without losing when leading at the break.

Ten Hag could point to a plan that worked for almost an hour and marginal decisions that went against his side but City were worthy winners.

The victory extends their unbeaten run to 19 games and moves Pep Guardiola’s side back within one point of leaders Liverpool – who they play next Sunday, live on Sky Sports at 3.45pm.

Assigned by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to represent him at the event, Chiwenga’s presence has sparked speculation amidst escalating infighting within Zanu PF.

Critics are questioning the timing of Mnangagwa’s decision to send Chiwenga to Victoria Falls, particularly in light of the recent bomb threat.

Some speculate that this move was deliberate, suggesting that Mnangagwa may have strategically placed Chiwenga in harm’s way to deflect attention from internal party disputes.

Proposal To Replace Mr Ibu With Victor Matemadanda

By Showbiz Reporter| A proposal from a group of Zimbabweans suggesting that Nigeria’s Nollywood should submit a request to the Zimbabwean government for the release of its ambassador to Mozambique, Victor Matemadanda, to join the Nollywood industry as a replacement for the actor Mr. Ibu, represents an intriguing blend of politics, diplomacy, and entertainment. This scenario, while speculative and highly unconventional, touches upon several facets of cultural exchange, diplomacy, and the global influence of Nollywood as a powerhouse in African cinema.

**Cultural Exchange and Diplomacy:**
The idea of a sitting ambassador transitioning to a role in another country’s entertainment industry is unprecedented but highlights the potential for cultural diplomacy. Victor Matemadanda, as a respected figure within Zimbabwean politics and now diplomacy, embodies a wealth of experience and stature that transcends the conventional boundaries of political engagement. His involvement in Nollywood, one of the world’s largest film industries by output, could serve as a unique bridge between Zimbabwe and Nigeria, promoting cultural exchange and understanding between the two nations.

**Nollywood’s Global Influence:**
Nollywood has become a cultural and economic powerhouse, not only in Africa but globally, known for its prolific output and unique storytelling that resonates with audiences worldwide. The industry’s influence extends beyond entertainment, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s GDP and serving as a vehicle for cultural diplomacy. Incorporating a figure like Matemadanda could further enhance Nollywood’s diversity and its role in fostering African unity through cinema.

**The Role of Mr. Ibu and the Impact of His Replacement:**
Mr. Ibu (John Okafor) is a beloved figure in Nollywood, known for his comedic roles and the joy he brings to audiences. Replacing him, whether hypothetically or realistically, would require someone capable of capturing the affection of the audience while bringing a new dimension to the roles Mr. Ibu is famed for. While Matemadanda’s background in politics and diplomacy is vastly different from acting, this transition could offer a fresh perspective and new storytelling avenues that reflect the complexities of contemporary African society.

**Challenges and Considerations:**
The proposal raises several challenges, including the practicality of such a transition, Matemadanda’s interest and aptitude for acting, and the reaction of audiences and industry stakeholders. Additionally, it would require navigating the intricate dynamics of international relations and the protocols involved in releasing an ambassador for such an unconventional role. This scenario also prompts reflection on the broader implications for cultural representation and the intersection of politics and entertainment.

*

While speculative, the proposal for Victor Matemadanda to join Nollywood as a replacement for Mr. Ibu opens up fascinating discussions on cultural diplomacy, the global influence of African cinema, and the potential for cross-sectoral transitions that challenge conventional norms. It underscores the power of entertainment in bridging divides and fostering connections between nations, offering a unique lens through which to explore the complexities of contemporary African identity and diplomacy.

US Slaps FAZ Boss, ED And Chiwenga With New Sanctions

Statement by National Security Council Spokesperson Adrienne Watson on U.S. Sanctions on Zimbabwean Individuals and Entities-

In Zimbabwe we continue to witness gross abuses of political, economic, and human rights. The targeting of civil society and severe restrictions on political activity have stifled fundamental freedoms, while key actors, including government leaders, have siphoned off public resources for personal gains. These illicit activities support and contribute to a global criminal network of bribery, smuggling, and money laundering that impoverish communities in Zimbabwe, southern Africa, and other parts of the world.

In response to new and continuing corruption and serious human rights abuse, the United States is refocusing and elevating its efforts to hold accountable the individuals and entities that are responsible for this exploitation. Today, the United States is employing a new set of tools in Zimbabwe, including the flagship Global Magnitsky sanctions program, to make clear that the egregious behavior of some of the most powerful people and companies in Zimbabwe matches the actions of the worst human rights abusers and corrupt actors globally.

Specifically, the Department of the Treasury is designating three entities and eleven individuals, including President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, Brigadier General (Retired) Walter Tapfumaneyi, and businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei, pursuant to Executive Order 13818, which builds upon and implements the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, for their involvement in corruption or serious human rights abuse. These designations build on recent U.S. Government actions, including pausing U.S. participation in the African Development Bank Dialogue and utilizing the Department of State’s new visa restriction policy for undermining democracy in Zimbabwe. These steps are concurrent with the termination of the preexisting Zimbabwe sanctions program that began in March 2003 and expanded on in subsequent orders. Actions to retire the previous sanctions program and designate key actors under the Global Magnitsky sanctions program are part of an ongoing effort to ensure we are promoting accountability for serious human rights abuse and corruption in a targeted and strategic manner.

Sanctions on these individuals and entities do not represent sanctions on Zimbabwe or its public. The Administration reaffirms its commitment to work with the people of Zimbabwe; will continue to robustly support civil society, human rights defenders, and independent media to promote values consistent with the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act of 2001; and take additional measures to hold accountable those who deny Zimbabweans the democratic freedoms and good governance they deserve.

Police Arrest SA Citizen, “John Doe” Over ED Bomb Scare, As Sources Say Suspect Is Someone Else

By A Correspondent | Zimbabwean police have made a significant breakthrough in their investigation into last week’s bomb scare at Victoria Falls International Airport. In a dramatic turn of events, a South African national, identified as Cuan Reed Govender (26), has been apprehended at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. Authorities suspect Govender of being the individual behind the alarming email threat that led to the airport’s closure.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Spokesperson, George Charamba, confirmed Govender’s arrest, indicating that airport authorities discovered suspicious items, including bullets, in his luggage. This discovery prompted an immediate investigation, which has now escalated into a state security operation.

“Our security services have identified the individual responsible for the bomb scare as Cuan Reed Govender, a national of a neighboring country,” stated Charamba. He urged the public to remain calm as operations continue and expressed gratitude for their cooperation.

The incident caused disruptions at Victoria Falls International Airport, with flights suspended for a significant portion of Friday morning following the receipt of an unsigned email warning of an imminent bomb blast.

The development, however, contradicts testimonials by top government sources who told ZimEye that the suspect is in fact and Israeli who sent the email from his home country.

“ The security forces traced the person to Israel,” a source told ZimEye.

Meanwhile, amidst the unfolding developments, Zimbabweans have taken to social media to voice their opinions. Some citizens have demanded that President Mnangagwa experience the nation’s infrastructure challenges firsthand by traveling via road instead of air.

“He must use the same pothole-ridden roads to understand the daily struggles we endure,” remarked one activist on social media.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are working to bring closure to the incident and ensure the safety and security of all travelers and airport personnel. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

U.S. President Cancels Executive Order On ZANU PF, Is This Biti’s Work?

**Washington, D.C., March 4, 2024** – In a significant move, President Joseph R. Biden Jr. has declared the termination of the national emergency status concerning Zimbabwe, revoking several executive orders that have been in place for over two decades. The original declaration was made in Executive Order 13288 on March 6, 2003, by then-President George W. Bush, targeting individuals within the Zimbabwean government accused of undermining the country’s democratic processes and institutions. Subsequent orders in 2005 and 2008 expanded these sanctions in response to continued human rights abuses and public corruption.

President Biden, while still expressing concerns over violence, human rights abuses, and corruption in Zimbabwe, stated that the conditions no longer necessitate the national emergency’s continuation. This announcement marks a significant shift in U.S. policy towards Zimbabwe, signaling a potential thaw in bilateral relations after years of tension.

The termination of the emergency status revokes Executive Orders 13288, 13391, and 13469, effectively lifting the economic and political sanctions imposed under these orders. However, the President’s statement clarified that this action would not affect any ongoing or pending actions or proceedings initiated under the orders, nor would it impact any rights, duties, or penalties that arose prior to the termination.

The White House emphasized that the decision was made in accordance with the National Emergencies Act and other relevant U.S. laws, ensuring that all actions are consistent with legal and budgetary requirements. It also stressed that the termination does not impair the authority of any executive department or agency or affect the functions of the Office of Management and Budget.

This move has sparked various reactions, with some viewing it as a step towards re-engaging with Zimbabwe and encouraging reforms, while others express caution, highlighting the ongoing issues of governance and human rights in the country. The international community and stakeholders within Zimbabwe are closely watching the implications of this policy change, hopeful for positive developments in the nation’s democratic processes and human rights situation.

Tshabangu Calls For Unity To Remove Zanu PF

By A Correspondent

Sengezo Tshabangu, the self-appointed interim Secretary General of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has issued a call for unity among opposition parties to challenge the ruling Zanu PF party.

Tshabangu, whose actions led to the recalls of elected CCC MPs and councillors, has faced criticism and skepticism, with many regarding him as a Zanu PF proxy.

Despite this, he recently secured a Senatorial seat, further fueling suspicions surrounding his allegiances.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Tshabangu emphasized the need for a united front against Zanu PF, citing recent events as evidence of the opposition’s disarray.

He stated:”With what I saw yesterday at Moreblessing Ali’s funeral, as the whole opposition, we still have a long way to go. Yes, we need to restart our formula if we are to take over from Zanu PF; otherwise, it will still remain a far-fetched dream. The scenes were totally disturbing.”

Tshabangu’s remarks come at a time of heightened political tension in Zimbabwe, with the ruling party facing growing discontent and opposition parties struggling to present a united front.

Despite efforts to challenge Zanu PF’s dominance, internal divisions and power struggles have hindered the opposition’s effectiveness.

Critics have raised concerns about Tshabangu’s motivations and his role within the CCC, questioning whether his actions serve the interests of the opposition or those of the ruling party.

His recent appointment to a Senatorial seat has only intensified suspicions surrounding his allegiances.

As Zimbabwe gears up for the next round of elections, Tshabangu’s call for unity underscores the urgency of the opposition’s need to regroup and present a cohesive alternative to Zanu PF.

However, with internal rifts and accusations of infiltration undermining their efforts, the path to unseating the ruling party remains fraught with challenges.

In response to Tshabangu’s statement, opposition leaders have called for transparency and accountability within the CCC, urging members to remain vigilant against attempts to undermine their collective goals. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the future of Zimbabwe’s opposition movement hangs in the balance, with unity emerging as a critical factor in determining its success or failure.

In a statement issued on Monday, NDWG articulated its commitment to fostering a more inclusive and people-centric political environment.

Below is a statement issued by the NDWG Monday:

The lives of our people are in danger due to unending cycles of poverty, oppression, looting and plundering of the national resources and subversion of the will of our people through electoral theft and self imposition by an unpopular tyranny.

At the inaugural meeting of the NDWG, the delegates from the 10 provinces of Zimbabwe and various organisations unanimously resolved the following as part of he process of gathering people’s views about the Zimbabwe that they want;

Chiwenga Speaks In “Matebhererendi” : Video

By A Correspondent

Tensions were palpable at the Victoria Falls Renewable Energy Expo as Deputy President Constantino Chiwenga reluctantly stepped into the spotlight following a bomb threat that rattled the area.

Despite the controversy surrounding his appearance, Honorable Vice President Retired General Dr. Constantino Chiwenga took to the stage to officiate at the International Renewable Energy Conference & Expo 2024 in Victoria Falls.

His presence underscored the government’s commitment to advancing renewable energy initiatives in Zimbabwe, despite the challenges and uncertainties facing the nation.

As Chiwenga addressed the audience, the air was thick with anticipation and apprehension.

His remarks, while focused on renewable energy and the potential for sustainable development, also carried the weight of political scrutiny and speculation.

For many observers, Chiwenga’s speech served as a barometer of the current state of affairs within the ruling party and the broader political landscape.

Amidst the backdrop of Zanu PF infighting and external threats, Chiwenga’s reluctant appearance at the Renewable Energy Expo highlights the complex dynamics at play in Zimbabwean politics.

As the nation navigates through these turbulent times, the role of key figures like Chiwenga becomes increasingly significant in shaping the country’s future trajectory.

While the event aimed to promote renewable energy solutions and foster international collaboration, it also served as a platform for political maneuvering and intrigue.

As Deputy President Chiwenga concluded his address and left the stage, the lingering tension in the air underscored the challenges and uncertainties facing Zimbabwe as it strives to embrace a more sustainable and prosperous future.

Chamisa Says His Call To Scrap CALA Has Been Adopted

By A Correspondent| Former Citizens Coalition for Change leader, Nelson Chamisa has bragged that his call to scrap what is called the Continuous Assessment Learning Activities (CALA) has yielded results as the government has finally found sense in doing away with program that was giving both pupils and parents a difficult time.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Chamisa said the CALA experiment had jeopardized the education of a whole generation.

“During the election campaigns, I made a strong case for the scrapping of the Continuous Assessment Learning Activities (CALA)

“I see this week government finally scrapped the Continuous Assessment Learning Activities (CALA) amid escalating pressure from learners and parents, replacing it with a heritage-based education curriculum

He urged the government to subject future education policies to rigorous testing before implementation.

“Our education policies, and any policy for that matter, must undergo rigorous testing before implementation; our future is at stake. In the past, education policies have run into implementation headwinds due to the absence of public consultation,” added Chamisa.

Parliament Seeks To Protect Susan Mutami Like Victims

By Dorrothy Moyo | The recent legislative initiative by Zimbabwe to amend the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, specifically aiming to raise the age of sexual consent from 16 to 18, represents a significant shift in the country’s approach to child protection. This move comes in the wake of a Constitutional Court ruling that identified a critical gap in the legal framework, where 17 and 18-year-olds were left unprotected due to a misalignment between the Criminal Law Code and the Constitution. The proposed amendments, therefore, not only seek to close this gap but also to realign Zimbabwe’s legal statutes with international standards on child rights.

The question at hand is whether these amendments will effectively deter the occurrence of more victims like Susan Mutami, considering the historical reluctance of the ruling party or Parliament to address the age of consent comprehensively. Mutami’s case, among others, has underscored the urgent need for legal reforms to protect young individuals from sexual exploitation and abuse, highlighting systemic vulnerabilities within the legal and political frameworks.

The introduction of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) (Protection of Children and Young Persons) Amendment Bill is indeed a progressive step. By expanding the definition of “young persons” to include all individuals under 18, the amendments aim to offer blanket protection to all minors, thereby addressing the previously existing legal loophole. Furthermore, the bill’s provisions for facilitating the testimony of children and other vulnerable witnesses in court proceedings reflect a nuanced understanding of the barriers to justice faced by victims of sexual crimes.

However, the effectiveness of these amendments in preventing future cases like Mutami’s hinges on several factors beyond the mere enactment of the law. Firstly, the political will and commitment of the ruling party to enforce these legal provisions are crucial. The historical reluctance to raise the age of consent has been a significant barrier to child protection in Zimbabwe. Thus, the implementation of these amendments requires a concerted effort to transcend political interests in favor of safeguarding children’s rights.

Secondly, public awareness and education about the new legal protections and the rights of children and young persons are vital. For the legal amendments to have a tangible impact, there needs to be a broad understanding among the populace, especially among young people, about their rights and the legal recourse available to them.

Thirdly, the capacity of law enforcement agencies and the judicial system to effectively enforce these amendments is critical. This includes the training of police, prosecutors, and judges on the new provisions and ensuring that the legal process is accessible and sensitive to the needs of young victims of sexual crimes.

In conclusion, while the proposed amendments to the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act represent a forward-looking approach to child protection in Zimbabwe, their success in preventing more victims like Susan Mutami will largely depend on the implementation and enforcement mechanisms put in place. It requires a comprehensive approach that involves political commitment, public awareness, and an efficient judicial system to translate legislative reforms into effective protection for children and young persons.

“Lawyer Used Witchcraft”

In a courtroom drama that seems to blend the lines between the legal and the supernatural, Linda Kovi, a 34-year-old lawyer, faced charges this Friday in the Harare Regional Court. The allegations against her are as unusual as they are serious, involving threats of witchcraft against a witness in a fraud case. Presided over by Magistrate Mr. Stanford Mambanje, the case has captured the public’s imagination and raised eyebrows across the legal community.

Kovi is accused of obstructing justice in connection with earlier charges of fraudulently obtaining a conversion certificate from the Zimbabwe Council for Legal Education (CLE), a necessary qualification for practicing law in Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC), led by officer Chimusoro Elisha, initially arrested Kovi in 2023, setting off a series of events that would lead to this extraordinary moment in court.

Following her release on bail, Kovi allegedly contacted Shorai Tafadzwa Mupunga, a key witness, and hinted at a supernatural retaliation for her involvement in the case. According to Prosecutor Mr. Anesu Chirenje, Kovi spoke of Chief Dotito, a traditional healer still at large, who purportedly had visions of Mupunga being attacked by evil spirits due to her participation in the legal proceedings against Kovi.

Further allegations suggest that Chief Dotito himself warned Mupunga of spiritual attacks and professional repercussions if she persisted in her role as a witness. This was reportedly part of an orchestrated effort to dissuade Mupunga from testifying, using the fear of witchcraft as leverage.

The case took an even darker turn as Kovi allegedly sought the assistance of Chief Dotito in targeting not just the witness but also the ZACC officers, prosecutors, and magistrates involved in her case. Threats were also made against ZACC investigators, with Senior Investigating Officer Shelton Gambiza being warned to distance himself from the proceedings to avoid “something sinister.”

As the court adjourned, with Kovi remanded in custody pending a bail application set for March 4, the legal community and public alike are left to ponder the intersections of law, ethics, and the supernatural. This case not only challenges the boundaries of legal practice in Zimbabwe but also ignites a debate on the influence of traditional beliefs in modern legal systems.

Ali Family Speaks On Tshabangu Hoarde’s Violence At Funeral

We, the members of the Ali family, express our profound disapproval of the violent incidents that unfolded during the burial of our dear family member, Moreblessing Ali, on March 2, 2024. Our original intent was to bid farewell to our relative with the utmost dignity and without the distressing scenes we unfortunately witnessed.
Our family firmly maintained the position that Moreblessing Ali’s interment would not proceed until our family lawyer, Honorable Job Sikhala, was released from prison. We had engaged Hon. Sikhala to represent us when we were in the dark about Moreblessing Ali’s whereabouts following her disappearance in May 2022. His legal expertise guided us through the intricate legal landscape, enabling us to seek answers about our relative’s fate. We patiently awaited Hon. Sikhala’s release, recognizing the sacrifices he made on behalf of our family.

As a united family, we convened multiple meetings to ensure that the unfortunate events of June 14, 2022, would not recur. Our collective decision was clear: Moreblessing Ali’s burial would adhere strictly to the family’s wishes and desires. Politics, party affiliations, slogans, and any interference with the family’s intentions were categorically prohibited. The funeral program would unfold according to our internal arrangements.

Regrettably, certain individuals disrupted the solemnity of the occasion by injecting politics and slogans into the proceedings. Their actions led to violence and insults, which we find utterly unacceptable.

Furthermore, some even took it upon themselves to dictate the funeral program, disregarding the family’s expressed wishes.

As a family, we have taken the necessary steps to involve law enforcement in addressing the disruptive behavior during our loved one’s funeral. It is crucial that we curb this behavior promptly to foster a culture of respect for funerals and memorial services. The inhumane, insensitive, and reprehensible actions witnessed have deeply affected our family.

Road Accident- Mayor Collides With Zanu PF Vehicle

In a disturbing escalation of political tensions in Masvingo, an accident involving the immediate past Mayor, Advocate Collen Maboke, and a vehicle belonging to Zanu PF has left several injured, including the Zanu PF youth chairman, Darlington Mandebvu. The incident occurred last night along the Bikita Masvingo Highway near Mutendi Church, marking a concerning moment of violence amidst the already charged political atmosphere in Zimbabwe.

Advocate Maboke, a notable opposition politician, was returning from his rural home near Nyika in Bikita with his wife, Tariro Maboke, and a relative, Simbarashe Matyei, when their vehicle was side-swiped by a Zanu PF vehicle that had encroached into their lane. According to Maboke, the Zanu PF vehicle, driven by individuals who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, aggressively pursued and blocked their car, leading to a physical altercation where Maboke, his wife, and Matyei were assaulted.

The confrontation took a turn for the worse when Mandebvu, the Zanu PF youth chairman involved in the dispute, was seriously injured by an oncoming vehicle while allegedly standing in the middle of the road. Mandebvu was reportedly taken to the hospital with severe injuries, suspected to include broken legs. The chaos did not end there; another vehicle overturned in an attempt to avoid the scene, though the condition of its occupants remains unclear.

Maboke’s vehicle sustained minor damage, and he reported the incident to the police in Masvingo. However, efforts to reach out to the police and Mandebvu for comments have been unsuccessful.

This incident not only highlights the dangerous levels of political animosity in the region but also raises serious concerns about road safety and the rule of law. The community awaits further details and hopes for a swift and just resolution to this alarming event.- Herald

Byo Divorces Shoot Up

Divorces…

Bulawayo, Zimbabwe – The city of Bulawayo has witnessed an alarming increase in divorce applications, with a shocking 139 cases filed at the High Court before the end of February this year. According to the Judicial Services Commission (JSC), this trend underscores a worrying social phenomenon, as nine of these cases have already reached a conclusion.

This significant rise follows last year’s record of 658 divorces in Bulawayo, marking a concerning upward trajectory in marital dissolutions within the region. Nationwide, the figures are equally troubling, with divorces doubling to 2,735 cases in the past year from 1,351 in 2021, against 13,436 recorded marriages.

Statistics reveal that approximately 20 percent of Zimbabwean marriages are likely to end in divorce, a situation that experts find alarming given the negative repercussions on families and communities. The causes of these marital breakdowns are varied, ranging from infidelity and gender-based violence (GBV) to socio-economic pressures.

Social media misuse and communication breakdowns are also cited as critical factors contributing to the growing divorce rates across Zimbabwe. Ms. Sethulo Ncube, the regional director of the Zimbabwe Women Lawyers Association (ZWLA), points to GBV and a lack of commitment as primary reasons for marital failures.

Local lawyer Mr. Tinashe Runganga highlighted the clash of cultures as a significant driver of divorce. He emphasized the changing perceptions of divorce in African culture and tradition, where it was once considered taboo. “The intertwining of cultures and the inevitability of divorce in the modern world present new challenges to marital stability,” Mr. Runganga said.

Church leaders and family counselors echoed these sentiments, identifying infidelity, financial strife, lack of communication, and unresolved disputes as common causes. Dr. Rocky Moyo, a leader at the Council for Churches in Africa, also noted domestic abuse and a fundamental lack of understanding of marriage as contributing factors.

Mrs. Nonhlanhla Gwebu, a family counsellor, stressed that infidelity, domestic violence, and substance abuse often serve as the “final straw” leading to divorce. Meanwhile, psychologist Ms. Thandolwethu Mafu pointed to the evolving gender roles, with women increasingly becoming breadwinners, as a source of marital tension.

As Bulawayo grapples with this surge in divorce applications, community leaders, legal experts, and psychologists call for a deeper examination of the underlying issues. There is a consensus on the need for more robust support systems for couples and increased awareness about the complexities of marriage to stem this concerning trend.- State Media

Police Case Over Tshabangu-Musonza Violence At Moreblessing’s Burial That Angered Mourners To Defend Nero

By A Correspondent| ZimEye | The solemn occasion of Moreblessing Ali’s burial turned chaotic as violence erupted, sparked by an assault allegedly perpetrated by Sengezo Tshabangu’s associate, Darlington Musonza. Multiple camera footage shot live at the scene shows that the violence began when Musonza assaulted three women over political disagreements, igniting a wave of turmoil amidst the grieving attendees.

An eyewitness, who preferred to remain anonymous, recounted the sequence of events: “I saw Musonza attacking the women without any provocation. It was a disgraceful act of violence that marred what should have been a peaceful farewell.”

In the midst of the chaos, a woman boldly expressed her opinion on the underlying political tensions: “Musonza’s actions are a direct result of recent electoral setbacks. Despite this, we stand firm in our support for Chamisa.”

Responding to the disturbing incident, Washington Ali, spokesperson for the Ali family, issued a statement condemning the violence: “We are deeply saddened by the disruption of Moreblessing Ali’s funeral. Our family wanted to bid her farewell with dignity and respect, but the intrusion of politics has tarnished her memory.”

He further emphasized the family’s determination to uphold their original intentions for the funeral: “We will not proceed with the burial until our family lawyer, Honorable Job Sikhala, is released. His guidance has been invaluable to us throughout this ordeal.”

In light of the disturbing events, the Ali family called for swift action to address the disruptive behavior. “We urge law enforcement to thoroughly investigate this incident and ensure that justice is served,” Washington Ali asserted.

As investigations unfold, the community awaits further developments regarding the circumstances surrounding the violence at Moreblessing Ali’s funeral, hoping for justice and closure amidst the turmoil of political tensions.

Blue Card No Longer Coming

FIFA has ruled out the introduction of blue card in football, the world football governing body’s president Gianni Infantino has confirmed.

Reports emerged last month that the International Football Association Board (IFAB) had started the trials in the lower leagues in Europe.

The proposed card would have seen players removed from the field for ten minutes and sent to sin bins if they commit a cynical foul or show dissent.

The decision to drop the proposal was made at a meeting between officials from IFAB and FIFA.

“There will not be any blue cards used at elite level. This is a topic that is non-existent for us,” Infantino told reporters.

“Fifa is completely opposed to blue cards. I was not aware of this topic – as the president of Fifa. I think Fifa has a say in IFAB. If you want a title, ‘it is red card to the blue card.’

“We are always open to look at ideas and proposals. But once you look at it, you also have to protect the essence and tradition of the game. There is no blue card.”

”Victor Doesn’t Even Have A Decent Pair Of Shoes”

In a surprising twist, state owned Sunday Mail has shed light on the contradictory narrative surrounding the purported generosity of businessman Wicknell Chivayo, revealing that the supposed beneficiaries of his lavish gifts may not be as fortunate as they appear.

Contrary to claims of wealth and opulence, it has been revealed that Victor, the individual synonymous with Chivayo’s famous catchphrase “Go and see Victor,” may not even possess a decent pair of shoes, as reported by State Media.

The persona of Victor, initially believed to be a mere employee at Exquisite Cars Dealership tasked with presenting freebies to Chivayo’s selected recipients, has been thrust into the spotlight. Amidst the comedic buzz and social media frenzy surrounding Chivayo’s ostentatious announcements of gift-giving, skepticism has emerged regarding the true identity and circumstances of Victor.

Commentary on Chivayo’s social media posts has raised eyebrows, with one individual humorously suggesting that Victor should “go and see himself” and perhaps receive a modest Fit or Aqua vehicle instead. Another comment poignantly pointed out the irony of handing out cars when the recipient lacks basic footwear.

State Media’s investigation into Victor’s background revealed a surprising truth: Victor Matiyenga, the purported beneficiary, is, in fact, the owner of Exquisite Cars Dealership. Despite his current status as a successful entrepreneur, Victor’s journey began humbly, washing cars at his father’s dealership.

Over the years, Victor’s perseverance and vision propelled him to transform Exquisite Cars into a thriving enterprise, catering to the tastes of Zimbabwe’s nouveau riche with top-of-the-range vehicles. Despite his notable achievements, including accolades such as Businessman of the Year, Victor remains unassuming and grounded, defying stereotypes and misconceptions.

The revelation of Victor’s true identity and success story serves as a cautionary tale against hasty judgments and assumptions. In the era of social media sensationalism, narratives can be skewed and individuals misrepresented. As the spotlight shifts from Victor to other figures like Madzibaba Chipaga, who specializes in second-hand car sales, it is essential to approach such narratives with critical scrutiny.

State Media’s expose highlights the importance of discerning truth from fiction, challenging preconceived notions, and recognizing the resilience and determination of individuals like Victor, who defy expectations and rewrite their own success stories. As the saga of Chivayo’s “gifts” continues to unfold, it is evident that behind every catchy catchphrase lies a complex and multifaceted reality awaiting discovery.

WestProp Unveils $100 Million Hills Luxury Lifestyle Estate In The US

By Business Reporter-The launch date for the highly anticipated US$100 million mixed-use Hills Luxury Lifestyle Estate (formerly Warren Hills Golf Club) has been set for May 2, 2024.

This was revealed by WestProp Holdings chief executive Mr Ken Sharpe last night at a sold-out inaugural diaspora marketing roadshow that took place at the prestigious Sofitel Hotel, Lafayette Square in Washington, DC.

Mr Sharpe has embarked on overseas roadshows to get more people in the diaspora to buy properties and invest with WestProp.

“It is with great humility and pride that I announce publicly our planned mixed use development called the Hills Luxury Lifestyle Estate,” he said.
The estate will host the first PGA quality championship golf course in Zimbabwe, becoming the second in the sub-region as well as the first luxury five-star hotel to have branded residences in sub-Saharan Africa.

The lifestyle estate will have 862 homes with apartments, townhouses, villas, and retirement flats with a clinic offering services around the clock.

A record-breaking 80 per cent green space will be created in the estate – making the development green-compliant.

Added attractions include swimming and tennis academies and novel sporting disciplines.

A huge incentive of US$10 000 discount was offered to all attendees.
“We are excited to offer all of you who are attending either in person or virtually a US$10 000 discount off your purchase price at the Hills”.

He appealed to Zimbabweans staying in the United States to actively participate in the rebuilding of Zimbabwe, quoting the popular saying by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, “Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo (literally meaning “we the people will build our country”.

He invoked the spirit of patriotism when he said: “Today, we have the choice to support Zimbabwe to grow and prosper or to standby and do nothing.

I often say that if not now, then when and if not me and you then who?
“I ask everyone tonight, the same question. I believe in the future of Zimbabwe, not because of the abundant minerals we have in the ground nor for the fertile soil that can feed not only our country, but also our neighbors and not even the beautiful nature and wildlife we have in our Zimbabwe but I rather believe and trust in the most valuable asset we have which is actually the people of Zimbabwe”.

At least 62 per cent of the population in Zimbabwe is under the age of 25 – a statistic that dovetails into the company’s 26-year vision to put 1 billion bricks into the ground by 2050.

Mr Sharpe responded to questions and fears from the delegates, helping to build their confidence in investing with genuine real estate companies.

The roadshow was attended by Zimbabwe’s representative to the United States Ambassador Tedious Chifamba and American Chamber of Commerce chairman in Zimbabwe J. W Oliver.

Mr Oliver said Zimbabwe stands out globally because its most important resource are the people who are educated, friendly, supportive and eager to help grow the local economy.

“The prospects of doing business in Zimbabwe are very exciting,” he said, adding that the American Chamber of Commerce in Zimbabwe exists to facilitate linkages between businesses.

Ambassador Chifamba spoke on the huge demand for housing in Zimbabwe, highlighting the sector as a priority investment area.

He said a number of opportunities exist in mining, tourism, farming, and renewable energy through partnerships, go-it-alone and investment in special economic zones.

“The preferred investment models depend on the preference of the investor”, he said.

He paid tribute to the Zimbabwean diaspora in America for contributing US$179 million in remittances last year.

He urged the diaspora to pool resources together and invest in Zimbabwe as blocks, adding that they can use the power of numbers to get credit from offshore financial institutions to invest home.

Mnangagwa Rewards Another Mugabe Coup Plotter

By Political Reporter- President Emerson Mnangagwa has extended recognition and appointed Air Vice Marshal John Jacob Nzvede, a prominent figure from the infamous coup that ousted the late President Robert Mugabe in November 2017, as the new Commander of the Airforce of Zimbabwe.

This comes after Mnangagwa fired Air Marshal Elson Moyo from the said position on Friday.

Air Vice Marshal Nzvede, who played a crucial role in the 2017 coup under the leadership of the late Mugabe coup announcer Sibusiso Moyo, is set to assume his new responsibilities from March 15, 2024.

On the day of the coup announcement, Nzvede was notably seated beside Sibusiso Moyo during the televised address.

The announcement of this high-profile appointment was made by Martin Rushwaya, the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, on Friday.

Rushwaya explained the presidential decision, stating, “His Excellency, President Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has, in terms of section 340 (1) (f) as read with sections 216(2) and 89 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No.20), retired Air Marshal Elson Moyo as Commander of the Airforce of Zimbabwe with effect from 15th March 2024.”
Continuing with the statement, he added, “Following the above retirement, His Excellency the President has, in terms of sections 216 (2), 89, and 110(2)(d) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No.20), appointed Air Vice Marshal John Jacob Nzvede as the new Commander of the Airforce of Zimbabwe with effect from 15th March 2024.”

This move not only marks a transition in the leadership of the Airforce but also highlights the continued influence and acknowledgement of individuals who played pivotal roles during the historical events of the 2017 coup.

As elections approach, the incentive for such falsehoods grows, risking detection too late. Politicians are cautious with falsehoods in detailed or scripted communications due to higher reputational risks.

The lies aim to damage the Mutsvangwas’ political careers and the party’s trust. Despite these attempts, the relationship between the President and the Mutsvangwas remains strong, emphasizing their loyalty to the country and president. The lies are condemned as demonic, satanic, and evil.

Monica Mutsvangwa remains in her position, and her farm is intact, calling for an end to the malicious attacks against the family.

Nelson Chamisa’s Strategic Affidavit Submission

In a dramatic turn of events, Nelson Chamisa, the founder of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has been compelled to submit an affidavit in a controversial court case initiated by Sengezo Tshabangu, who falsely claims to be the Secretary-General of the CCC. This move marks Chamisa’s first affidavit deposition in response to a series of legal challenges aimed at ousting him from his political stronghold, mirroring the legal tactics employed against the Movement for Democratic Change Alliance (MDCA) in 2020.

The case against Chamisa, filed by Tshabangu, alleges ownership over CCC property, thereby forcing Chamisa to declare in court documents that he is not the leader of any political party. This legal maneuver is seen as a direct attack on Chamisa’s political identity and a ploy to weaken his leadership position within the CCC.

The situation further escalated following incidents of violence at the funeral of Moreblessing Ali, where individuals reportedly acting on behalf of Chamisa caused chaos. This incident is being used to paint Chamisa as a violent figure, damaging his public image and potentially setting the stage for future legal challenges against his eligibility for political office.

Insiders reveal that ZANU-PF, the ruling party, is orchestrating these events as part of a broader strategy to neutralize Chamisa’s political influence. By forcing Chamisa to disavow his leadership role, they aim to leverage this affidavit in future confrontations, potentially disqualifying him from political candidacy based on the Zimbabwean constitution’s clause against individuals convicted of violent crimes.

Socialite and political analyst, Gonzo, has weighed in on the unfolding situation, advising Chamisa to lay the groundwork for a new political entity without officially forming it. This cautious approach stems from a recognition of the targeted efforts against Chamisa, suggesting that a strategic delay in formalizing a new party could safeguard against immediate threats.

Furthermore, Gonzo emphasizes the need for Chamisa to identify a youthful successor to continue the democratic fight, citing the dwindling resolve among older opposition figures. This strategy not only aims to preserve the movement’s momentum but also to ensure its resilience against ongoing political assaults.

As the situation develops, Chamisa’s affidavit submission represents a critical juncture in Zimbabwe’s political landscape, highlighting the lengths to which his opponents will go to undermine his leadership and the strategic decisions necessary to navigate this challenging environment.

A US$3 million property owned by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat) in Harare has been left abandoned, leading to over US$600,000 in damages due to vandalism, as revealed by Truth Diggers. This incident adds to the controversies surrounding Zimstat, following last year’s suspension of its director general amid mismanagement allegations. Many Zimstat officials were reportedly unaware of the property until its vandalism came to light. The agency’s director of administration confirmed the matter is under investigation but could not provide further details.

Sources suggest this neglect reflects broader issues of mismanagement within government agencies, criticizing the lack of security at the valuable site and hinting at possible intentional neglect for looting purposes. The episode forms part of ongoing concerns about financial losses and inefficiency within the Zimbabwean government, amidst wider allegations of corruption and misappropriation within Zimstat. This includes the misuse of vehicles, dubious financial transactions, and the misallocation of funds intended for agency resources, spotlighting a need for greater accountability and governance within public institutions.

Students Slap MSU Over US Dollar Tuition

In a bold move that may set a precedent for educational institutions across Zimbabwe, Midlands State University’s (MSU) Masters in Business Administration (MBA) students are challenging the university’s demand for tuition fees to be paid exclusively in United States dollars. The heart of the dispute lies in the $1,888 USD per semester fee, a sum that students are required to pay—or at least half of it—by March 8 to register for their courses.

Taking a stand against what they view as an unlawful demand, the MBA cohort has enlisted Wintertons Legal Practitioners to represent their interests. In a decisive letter dated March 1, 2024, addressed to MSU’s Vice Chancellor Professor Victor Muzvidziwa, the legal firm issued a 48-hour ultimatum. The university is to provide an option for fee payment in the local currency, or face legal proceedings in the High Court.

The legal argument pivots on the assertion that demanding payment in US dollars contravenes existing laws. The letter firmly states, “Demanding payment in United States dollars is clearly in contravention of the law and should not be allowed to stand.” It further declares the students’ readiness to pay the requisite fees in local currency, in alignment with the legal stance.

This legal battle does not occur in isolation. Last August, the Zimbabwean Government, through the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, permitted universities and colleges to set tuition fees in US dollars. However, the MBA students argue this policy does not inherently grant institutions the right to demand payment in said currency exclusively.

The case echoes a similar situation faced by Harare Polytechnic students earlier in January. Their legal victory, secured by High Court judge Justice Gladys Mhuri, mandated the institution to cease demanding fees solely in US dollars, allowing for payment in the local currency at the prevailing interbank rate.

As the 48-hour deadline looms, the university’s response—or lack thereof—will determine the next steps in a potentially landmark legal confrontation. Will the students’ legal challenge prompt a reevaluation of fee policies across Zimbabwean universities? Only time will tell, but one thing is clear: the outcome of this dispute could have far-reaching implications for the affordability and accessibility of higher education in Zimbabwe.- state media
