Legislator Urges Companies To Prioritize Safety Of Female Workers At Night

By A Correspondent| Legislator and Deputy Speaker of Parliament Tatenda Mavetera has urged shop operators to prioritize the safety of workers who finish work at night.

Mavetera’s remarks come in the wake of a Spar Braeside employee who was murdered near her house in Chadcombe.

“My condolences to Faith Musonza’s family. My question to Spar is what is their company policy on safety of workers after knocking off late because 7pm is late for any woman? The safety of female workers is very important they should be protected,” said Mavetera.

Police have since launched investigations into the case and are appealing for information
which might assist with investigations.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the
incident.

“Police in Harare are investigating circumstances surrounding a case of murder in which
Faith Musonza aged 36 was found dead in a drain near her house along Chiremba Road,

Mliswa Urges ED To Consider UN Advice

By A Correspondent- Outspoken Norton legislator Temba Mliswa has urged President Emmerson Mnangagwa to disregard parliament’s consent and take the United Nations (UN)’s advice not to sign the Private Voluntary Organizations (PVO) bill into law.

The bill now awaits Mnangagwa’s signature to become law after it was approved by both parliament and senate.

The UN believes that if passed, the bill will shrink civic space in Zimbabwe and has since warned Mnangagwa against signing the bill.

Posting on Twitter Mliswa urged Mnangagwa to consider the advice saying by signing the bill he will dampens re-engagement efforts.

The President would do well to take the advice of the UN special rapporteur and not sign the PVO bill into law, it is better to serve the interests of the country not the party.

“The signing of the Bill also dampens the re-engagement drive. We have been paying American lobbyists to be admitted back yet here we have an opportunity to gain favour and support without paying money. Why trash our own efforts and foreign policy? It doesn’t make sense.

“There is no way in a democracy that everyone will believe and do the same things. We should cultivate ways to manage our differences without resorting to self-damaging actions,” Mliswa wrote.

He added that Mnangagwa should not always sign into law everything that is consented by parliament.

“The President has executive powers and shouldn’t be stampeded by parliament or his party to sign this Bill. By not signing it he would have scored a diplomatic score for the country. It will underscore our sincerity and preparedness for re-engagement as a country.”

Japan Commits more than Half a Million Dollars to Strengthen Surgical, Obstetric and Anaesthesia Care Services in Zimbabwe

HARARE, Zimbabwe, February 16, 2023/ — The Government of Japan has committed USD 633,975 to strengthen access to safe, timely and affordable Surgical, Obstetric and Anaesthesia (SOA) care services in Manicaland and Matabeleland North Provinces. The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO).

The funding from the Japanese Government will support SOA care services for everyone in need of care at all levels. It will also build the capacity of critical specialist health workers providing SOA services in Zimbabwe, provide basic and critical SOA equipment and consumables at selected high-burden secondary-level health facilities, and strengthen the national Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) to allow effective decision-making.  It is expected that, by the end of 2023, a significant number of patients in need of surgical care services will have received high quality care.

The Ambassador of Japan to Zimbabwe, H.E Mr. Satoshi Tanaka, said “Zimbabwe’s sustainable development and the attainment of its vision of a middle-income country by 2030 can only be assured if its citizens are healthy and have access to quality health care services. Japan will support Zimbabwe’s efforts to attain Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by strengthening access to safe, timely and affordable SOA care, for which there is a dire need.”

Zimbabwe is currently experiencing challenges in providing SOA care services owing to lack of surgical equipment, shortage of medicines, consumables, and sundries essential for SOA care services. This has seen in a decline in essential surgical procedures being done in hospitals across the country and resulting in long waiting lists.

The Permanent Secretary for MoHCC, Dr Jasper Chimedza, highlighted that MoHCC is committed to ensuring that every person in need of SOA services receive quality and timely care at all levels of the healthcare system.  In this regard, the SOA care system is currently being strengthened, as articulated in the first ever National Surgical, Obstetric and Anaesthesia Strategy (NSOAS: 2022 – 2025) which was launched in September 2022.

The supplementary budget funding from Japan will make a significant contribution in the delivery of quality surgical care services in Zimbabwe. Essential surgical and anaesthetic care is an indispensable component of UHC.

“The MoHCC will maintain its stewardship in making progress towards achieving the highest possible level of health and quality of life for every person in Zimbabwe. The funding will also contribute to the ongoing efforts to address some of the emerging challenges of Non-Communicable Diseases which include conditions amenable to surgical care,” said Dr Chimedza.

WHO Country Representative a.i. Professor Jean-Marie Dangou Director reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to support the MoHCC in strengthening the health system and implementation of the National Health Strategy (NHS 2022 – 2025) for which delivery of safe and quality SOA care are amongst its priorities. He appreciated the support of development partners for the implementation of Zimbabwe’s SOA Strategy to accelerate Zimbabwe’s progress towards attainment of UHC.

An estimated 845 631 people are expected to access emergency surgical services by end of 2023 through the proposed interventions in this project.

Indian Businessman Acquitted Of Defrauding Change-Moneys of US$765 000

A Zimbabwe-based Indian businessman tycoon Munir Kazi is now a free man after he was acquitted by the court on charges of defrauding foreign currency traders of US$765 000.

Magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti-Guwuriro cited a lack of compelling evidence when she upheld Kazi and his co-accused, Andre Hoffman’s application for discharge.

Muchiuchuti also ruled that the foreign currency dealers approached the court with dirty hands. The foreign currency deal, she said, if ever it existed, was an illegal transaction.

She said no one would genuinely just give away such large sums of money without signing any document, more so, to someone they met on the same day and did not have a close relationship with.

The magistrate blasted the State for leading completely undependable evidence from the forex dealers who were complainants in the case. The complainants, the court ruled, to make matters gave contradictory.

Muchuchuti also said none of the foreign currency dealers confirmed giving the money to Kazi.

According to the State case, on October 28, 2021, Kazi and Hoffman connived with Shingirai Muringi to fleece the forex dealers.

Muringi then allegedly approached Charles Nyamunda Jounet, a forex dealer and misrepresented that they could provide large sums of money in local currency in exchange for United States dollars. He allegedly said they wanted to buy US$765 000 in exchange for $17 212 500.

It is alleged that Jounet said he didn’t have enough US dollars and was advised by Muringi to source more from other foreign currency traders.

Jounet allegedly contributed US$28 000, Codwell Muhoni US$100 000, Wisdom Hodzi US$51 000, Rodney Makarutsa US$35 000, Benard Nyangoni US$50 000, Nyevero Chibisa US$87 000, Tinashe Kadzunge US$65 000 and Henry Abraham US$349 000.

Muringi, on the same day, allegedly introduced Jounet, Hodzi and Makarutsa to Hoffman in Avondale, Harare. Hoffman allegedly told them that Kazi would transfer money into their bank accounts, which was now done, forcing them to report the matter to the police.

Kazi last year applied to have his matter separated from Muringi, who is yet to appear in court to answer charges on the fraud case.

Gvt To Intervene On School Uniforms Monopoly

By A Correspondent- The government will step in to stop schools from forcing parents to buy uniforms at exorbitant prices, primary and secondary education minister Evelyn Ndlovu told parliament on Wednesday.

Ndlovu said the ministry would issue a statutory instrument to deal with schools which are profiteering from the business of selling uniforms after barring parents from securing cheaper ones from retail shops.

Some schools now sell uniforms, and pupils who buy their uniforms from retail shops have sometimes been barred from classes.

Ndlovu said while the ministry has encouraged schools to produce their own uniforms by utilising students learning fashion and fabrics, the plan was never to force parents to buy these at astronomical prices.

She told MPs: “We have a policy on trying to make sure that schools become production centres. However, if schools are now overcharging our people, then we have to come up with a statutory instrument or a policy to control what is happening because it would seem that they are making money out of our people.

“So, we will come up with a statutory instrument or policy document that will control that.”

Ndlovu had earlier attempted to swerve MPs’ questions by saying they should give her ministry the names of the offending schools “and we will send our representatives so that they can go and talk to the school heads.”

Buhera South MP Joseph Chinotimba (Zanu-PF) told Ndlovu that “the question that was posed was not talking about fashion and fabrics in schools.”

He added: “The question is, we have schools that are buying uniforms at OK Bazaars, Enbee or sourcing their own self-made uniforms. They are buying these uniforms and reselling them in schools. Some have a policy that says everyone should buy uniforms at the school.

“The school fees are exorbitant, school uniforms are expensive and parents are no longer affording to send children to school. What do we do about such an issue that schools are now selling uniforms at exorbitant prices?”

Earlier, Ndlovu came under fire from MPs over the country’s poor pass rate at Ordinary Level and Advanced Level, particularly in rural areas.

Binga North MP Prince Dubeko Sibanda (CCC) said: “In Binga district alone, 18 high schools came out with 0 percent pass rate in last year’s (O’ Level) examinations. What is the ministry doing to ensure that we reverse these kinds of pass rates that we are witnessing in the country?”

Sibanda drew the ire of the temporary Speaker William Mutomba (Buhera North, Zanu-PF) after he suggested that Ndlovu was “clueless on the extent of the problem” before adding: “In fact, in properly governed countries, one would not stand up and call themselves a minister of primary and secondary education with the level of pass rate that we are getting.”

Zanu-PF chief whip Pupurai Togarepi protested that “using words like ‘clueless’ to a minister, I think it is not correct.”

And Mutomba took further issue with Sibanda’s statement that Zimbabwe is not a properly governed country.

Said Mutomba: “Hon. Sibanda, what you have just said is so much unparliamentary. Can you withdraw?”

Sibanda then told Mutomba that he was withdrawing the statement that Zimbabwe is not a properly governed country, rephrasing: “Let me say in other jurisdictions, the minister would not have the courage to stand up and call herself a minister of primary and secondary education, with the kind of pass rate that we have.

“Let her tell us what are the pragmatic measures that her ministry is taking to ensure that we reverse these downward trends of pass rate that we are experiencing in the country.”

Ndlovu blamed the poor pass rate in rural areas on lack of reading materials and a shortage of teachers. She said her ministry was delivering computers in rural schools to help students access the internet, an advantage enjoyed by city pupils.

She told MPs: “It is true that we have schools in our rural areas that do not have enough teachers. As a result, we appealed to the ministry of public service, labour and social welfare, through the Public Service Commission, to have more teachers recruited this year.”

In 2022, she said they requested 50,000 new teachers but the finance ministry was only able to approve 10,000 “because of budgetary constraints.”

She told MPs: “This year in our budget we have been allocated 7,000 teachers that are going to be recruited apart from those that we are replacing, for instance those who retired, what we call attrition.

“So we are working closely with the Public Service Commission to first recruit 2,500 to replace those teachers that were retired, those that have passed away or those that have resigned.

“The current position is that we are again working on the recruitment of the 7,000 teachers. We are working to make sure that we get Treasury concurrence for the recruitment of the 7,000. Otherwise the 2,500 we are recruiting because they are already in the budget but the 7,000, we need to clear with Treasury so that at least we pay them.”

UN Experts Denounce PVO Bill

United Nations experts have urged President Emmerson Mnangagwa not to sign into law the controversial Private Voluntary Organisations (PVO) Amendment Bill, warning the legislation in its current form “severely restricts civil space and the right to freedom of association in the country.”

The PVO Amendment Bill has faced strong opposition, especially from civil society organisations and the international community.

The bill was approved by the National Assembly and sailed through the Senate February 1, 2023, and now awaits the president’s assent before it becomes law.

The UN experts submitted an analysis of the bill to the government in 2021, concluding that it was incompatible with Zimbabwe’s international human rights obligations, in particular the right to freedom of association.

In a statement on Tuesday, the experts said it was not too late for Mnangagwa to block the law.

“It’s not too late for the president to change course,” the experts said. “We stand ready to assist the government to revise the Amendment Bill to ensure compliance with international human rights norms and standards.”

They expressed deep concern that the oversight regime in the PVO bill provides for disproportionate and discretionary powers to the newly-established Office of the Registrar of PVOs, without independence from the executive branch.

“The Registrar’s Office powers will include the ability to consider, grant or reject the registration of PVOs, with little to no judicial recourse against such decisions. The bill’s requirements would also immediately render existing organisations, operating lawfully as trusts and associations, illegal,” the experts said.

The Office of the Registrar will also have extensive powers to intervene in and monitor the activities of PVOs, the experts said.

The prohibition of any “political affiliation” and unjustified restrictions on PVOs’ ability to obtain funding, including foreign funds, has also alarmed the UN experts.

“The vagueness or non-definition of many provisions in the bill also raises concerns that the proposed law will be misapplied,” said the experts.

They warned that actions considered to be in breach of certain provisions in the Bill could lead to criminal prosecution, with penalties ranging from heavy fines to imprisonment.

“While one of the stated aims of the Bill is to counter terrorism and money laundering in Zimbabwe, the restrictions contained therein will have a chilling effect on civil society organisations – particularly dissenting voices. By enacting this legislation, authorities would effectively be closing an already shrinking civic space,” the UN experts said.

The PVO Amendment Bill is not the first attempt by the Zimbabwean authorities to regulate NGOs. The first one was made in 2004 through the Non-Governmental Organisation Bill. It was passed by parliament but never signed into law by then president, Robert Mugabe. Source: ZimLive

Mnangagwa Blames Opposition For Harare Chaos

President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday revealed that most of the land barons are actually top government officials who should be helping to fight corruption.

Speaking at the official opening of Aspindale Park and Aspire Heights Development yesterday in Harare, Mnangagwa said the land barons that have been duping desperate home seekers of their hard-earned cash were high profile individuals.

“I have realized that the people I send to solve the issue of land barons are also involved. They cannot arrest themselves because they are thieves,” Mnangagwa said.

He said the scourge has created illegal settlements in the capital that do not meet government standards.

“I have seen some of the settlements when I am flying out of the country. Some of the houses are so small and I wonder if there are any toilets there. I also wonder if they have addresses. I am sure most of the people use their memory to locate them. We do not want such settlements,” he said.

“Trends show that once housing and infrastructure growth are accorded an integral part in development, a nation is better poised to effectively implement its economic production and productivity mix,” he said.

He also vowed that he will wrestle local authorities from the opposition in the general elections later this year.

According to President Chamisa, a huge surprise is on the cards.

“THERE IS A SURPRISE COMING..Nobody can ever ban or stop an idea or a moment whose time has come. Zimbabwe shall be free, just, peaceful and prosperous! #Fakapressure #Fakaprayer

Mnangagwa Ignores Government Workers’ Concerns

Tinashe Sambiri| The Zanu PF regime is not at all concerned about the plight of civil servants.

The Citizens’ Coalition for Change( CCC ) has accused Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Zanu PF party of denigrating government workers.

In a statement CCC said:
“The regime in Harare doesn’t prioritize the plight of the civil servants living in poverty & yet the majority’s current salaries are way below the poverty datum line. Our govt will honour teachers. We will restore dignity to our security officers & medical practitioners. We will bring back the US$540 salaries.”

The party also denounced Zanu PF thuggery.

“Zanu PF members in Gokwe North tried to violently gain entry into the venue we had booked for a rally which was cleared by @PoliceZimbabwe.

In trying to maintain peace, at least 5 of our security personnel were badly injured. ZRP had to disperse these thugs.”

57y Old Grandpa Rapes 8y Old Niece for 3 Years

A 57-year old man from Magwegwe suburb allegedly raped his neice for 3 years.

The man was arrested on Sunday last week after he was allegedly caught sexually abusing his eight-year-old niece.
Residents were shocked to discover the elderly man may have been molesting the child since she was five-years-old.

Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele withheld the suspect’s name to protect the identity of the victim.

She said the man may have raped his niece on several occasions, from the period extending from 2021 to this year.

The complainant is in grade three.

“On Saturday last week at around 11PM, the informant was coming from a beer drink when he peeped through the accused person’s bedroom window and saw the complainant and the accused person lying on the accused person’s bed. He also noticed some movements which made him suspect that the accused person could be sexually abusing the complainant,” said Asst Insp Msebele.

She said the informant called in the neighbours and the suspect was arrested.Asst Insp Msebele urged members of the public not to leave their girl children with untrustworthy male relatives.

Chelsea Boss Slams Critics

Chelsea coach Graham Potter has hit out at critics of his management style, claiming that they “don’t know anything about anything”.

Potter’s claims follow after Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole and Danny Murphy, on BT Sport, expressed surprise and criticised him for not “getting angry” when his team were denied a late penalty against West Ham United last weekend.

The Hammers’ Tomas Soucek handled a shot from Conor Gallagher but the referee waved play on as the match ended 1-1.

In his pre-match press conference before Chelsea’s Champions League tie against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, Potter was asked what does make him angry and replied: “Apart from these questions? I must be careful not to get into a discussion with the media.”

He continued: “Of course, I get angry. I am a human being just like you. But I choose to conduct myself the way I choose to conduct myself on the side.

“The same media talking about me [needing to be] more angry are then running stories about the problems of referees in grassroots football and don’t see the connection.

“It is an emotional thing. I have a responsibility to myself, Chelsea and the game to act the right way for me.

“If you think you can start a coaching career in ninth tier of English football, in the Northern Counties, and get to this point now with Chelsea in the Champions League without getting angry or just being nice, I would suggest that you don’t know anything about anything.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

New Lease Of Life For Nakamba

He made his first appearance for the Championship side earlier in the month, coming on as a second half substitute in the game against Stoke City. The encounter marked his first competitive appearance of the season after missing the action in the first half of the campaign.

The Warriors international then made his first start at the club last weekend and delivered an exceptional performance in the midfield.

The 29-year-old provided the needed cover for the back line as he made four tackles, four interceptions, and won the majority of the the duels.

Court Throws Operation Dudula Under The Bus, Protests Zimbabweans

By-The South African High Court has denied Operation Dudula’s attempt to intervene in a lawsuit brought by the Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF) challenging the non-extension of Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEPs).
Operation Dudula is a South African organisation regarded as xenophobic as it has been associated with aggressively intimidating and targeting migrants.
The group blames the presence of migrants for many of South Africa’s socioeconomic problems.
HSF is a human rights organisation that filed a case with the High Court Division in Gauteng, South Africa, last year to overturn the decision not to prolong ZEPs on the grounds that the decision was unlawful and unreasonable.
This case will be heard on April 11 to 14 this year.
Before the case hearing in April, the All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa (ATDFASA) with Operation Dudula applied to intervene in the matter to make their arguments when the case hearing starts (a normal procedure for people with an interest in the matter.)
The ZEPs cover around 178 000 Zimbabweans and will not be extended because the South African government provided ZEP holders a 12-month grace period to apply for another type of permit or leave the country by 2022.
South Africa temporarily extended ZEP holders’ stay until June of this year, after which Zimbabweans are expected to return home.
However, on February 10, 2023, the Gauteng Division of the High Court of South Africa dismissed the application made by Operational Dudula for lacking merit and that it is based on speculation.
On the other hand, the application by ATDFASA -the truck drivers association, succeeded.
In its judgement, the Gauteng Division of the High Court of South Africa said the “application by Operation Dudula to intervene in the main application is refused.”
“The application by All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa to intervene in the main application is granted and it is joined as the third respondent therein,” read the judgement.
“The aforementioned third respondent is directed to deliver any answering or supplementary affidavit that it may wish to deliver in the main application within 10 days from the date of this order. The costs of the third respondent’s application for intervention, shall be costs in the cause of the main application.”
The main application referred to here is the case launched by HSF in case no 32323/20233.
HSF has been joined by a second applicant the Consortium for Refugees and Migrants in South Africa (CORMSA) as the second applicant in terms of an order of this court of September 16, 2022.
“The Minister (of Home Affairs) is the first respondent in the main application and the Director General (DG) of the Department of Home Affairs is the second respondent. The respondents oppose the main application but only the DG has deposed to an answering affidavit.
“The relief claimed by HSF and CORMSA is for the decision to terminate the ZEPs be declared unlawful, unconstitutional and invalid.
The applicants also want the Minister of Home Affairs decision be reviewed and set aside, while the matter is remitted back to the minister for reconsideration, following a fair process that complies with the requirements of Sections 3 and 4 of the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act 3 of 2000 (PAJA).
“Pending the conclusion of a fair process and the first respondent’s further decision, it is directed that: Existing ZEP’s shall be deemed to remain valid, ZEP holders will continue to enjoy the protections afforded by Immigration Directive 1 of 2021, No holder of exemption should be required to produce a valid exemption certificate or an authorisation letter to remain in SA contemplated in Section 32(2) of the Immigration Act when making an application for any category of the visas, including temporary residence visa.”
HSF and CORMSA also want the Minister of Home Affairs and any other parties “opposing this application to pay costs, jointly and severally, the other paying the other to be absolved.”

Mwonzora Fires Mudzuri From Senate

By- MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora, the opposition leader has recalled his former deputy, Elias Mudzuri, from the Upper House, alleging that he has ceased to belong to his party.

In a vacancy notice to the Senate on Tuesday, deputy president of the senate Michael Nyambuya said the MDC-T informed him last week on Monday that Sen Mudzuri ceased to be a member of the party with effect from February 1. He said:

I have to inform the House that on the 6th of February, 2023, I was notified by the Movement for Democratic Change that with effect from the 1st of February, 2023, Hon. Sen. Eng. Elias Mudzuri ceased to be a member of the MDC party. Accordingly, Section 129 (1) (K) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe applies, it provides that: – ‘A seat of a Member of Parliament becomes vacant if the Member has ceased to belong to the political party of which he or she was a member when elected to Parliament and the political party concerned, by written notice to the Speaker or the President of the Senate, as the case may be, has declared that the member has ceased to belong to it.

He said the necessary administrative measures will be taken to inform President Mnangagwa, and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) of the existence of the vacancy in line with the Electoral Act, [Chapter 2:13].

The recall comes days after Mudzuri allegedly fired Mwonzora from MDC-T for breaching the party’s Constitution.

According to Mudzuri, Mwonzora did not follow the laid down procedure of holding the Congress.

However, Mwonzora was displeased by Mudzuri ‘s actions leading to the recall.

Mudzuri, a former Harare Mayor, was reportedly eyeing contesting for the presidency at the Congress before he threw the towel due to alleged irregularities in the build-up.

He was recalled from Senate on 14 February when the party was celebrating the life of Morgan Tsvangirai, the late founding leader of the MDC who died in 2018.

Diamond Laden Plane Crashes In Beatrice

By- A diamond-laden light plane owned by mining giant, Murowa (Private) Limited, crashed in Beatrice Monday.

The plane also had members of the police and private security officials, it has emerged.

The Piper 31 Navajo aircraft landed on a field about 16km from Beatrice at around 2.30 pm and had five people on board.
Police yesterday said no one was killed in the crash, but five people on-board were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
They were identified as the pilot Zvikomborero Nyamakura of Borrowdale, Murowa Diamonds’ security officer Salfina Karimazondo, Constable Obey Mabvundwi of CID Minerals Flora and Fauna Unit and two security guards from Fawcett Security Company, Petros Chaguruka and Fredrick Maroyi.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing, but there are preliminary indications that the plane could have developed an engine fault.
Police said the diamonds, which were being moved from Murowa’s mine in Zvishavane were secured before they were taken to Murowa Diamonds offices in Harare by security guards from Fawcetts.
“We are now working together with officials from the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) to ascertain the cause of the accident. More details will be released in due course,” said national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
CAAZ could not comment on the incident yesterday.
In a terse statement, the group corporate affairs executive for Murowa’s parent company, RioZim Limited, Tafadzwa Gova said: A Piper 31 Navajo aircraft owned by RZM Murowa (Private Limited) force-landed in a farm field approximately 16 kilometres from Beatrice on the 13th of February 2023.
“The cause is yet to be ascertained. There were no casualties on board or on the ground. Damage was limited to the aircraft.
“There will be a full investigation by the company in conjunction with CAAZ, the regulator.”
The company could not comment on the diamonds consignment, or the condition of the injured.
Witnesses on the ground said the incident occurred at Muriwai Farm around2.30pm and the five were pulled out of the wreckage by locals with the help of the farm owner who rushed them to hospital.
The pilot sustained serious head injuries and is said to be in critical condition, while the other four are in a stable condition.
Mr Ishmael Gwaze, who saw the unfolding drama, said he saw the low flying aircraft which appeared to be preparing to land, but was producing a weird sound.
He said the plane’s engines appeared to be stalling and restarting intermittently and it eventually landed on a fire guard.
“The plane then sped along the fireguard and the front landing gear snapped and it overturned.
“A person who was nearest to the wreckage rushed to the scene and used a spanner to break the windows.
“More people then arrived to help in pulling out the people from the plane,” said Mr Gwaze.
It is understood that just before the plane came down, the pilot, Nyamakura informed the other people on board that the airplane had developed a mechanical fault on its left engine and that he wanted to land safely.
Nyamakura is reported to have decided to land on the farm and appeared to have done a remarkable job until the landing gear gave in, sending the plane spinning on the ground.
The farm owner identified as Mr Gerald Douglas Davison (68) rushed to the scene and took the five to Beatrice Hospital for treatment from where they were later transferred to a medical facility in Harare.

Graham Potter Blasts Critics

Lutton Town Boss Praises Nakamba

Luton Town coach Rob Edwards has lauded Marvelous Nakamba’s performance following his full debut for the club over the weekend.

Nakamba joined the Hatters on a six-month loan deal from EPL side Aston Villa.

Health Experts Spell Out Demerits Of Formula Milk

GENEVA, 8th February 2023 – The formula milk industry’s marketing tactics are exploitative and urgent clampdowns are needed to tackle misleading claims and political interference, according to a new three-paper series published in The Lancet today. Industry influence – which includes lobbying against vital breastfeeding support measures – seriously jeopardizes the health and rights of women and children, the papers show.

“This new research highlights the vast economic and political power of the big formula milk companies, as well as serious public policy failures that prevent millions of women from breastfeeding their children,” said Professor Nigel Rollins, Scientist at WHO and author of a paper on formula milk marketing. “Actions are needed across different areas of society to better support mothers to breastfeed for as long as they want, alongside efforts to tackle exploitative formula milk marketing once and for all.”

Breastfeeding provides immense and irreplaceable benefits to babies and young children. It helps children survive and develop to their full potential, providing vast nutritional benefits, reducing infection risks and lowering rates of obesity and chronic diseases in later life. Yet, globally, only around 1 in 2 newborns are put to the breast within the first hour of life while fewer than half of infants under 6 months are exclusively breastfed, as per WHO recommendations.

Given the significant contributions of breastfeeding to people’s health, the Lancet series recommends much greater support for breastfeeding within healthcare and social protection systems – including guaranteeing sufficient paid maternity leave. Currently, around 650 million women lack adequate maternity protections, the papers note. Misleading marketing claims and strategic lobbying from the dairy and formula milk industries further add to the challenges parents face, by increasing anxiety around breastfeeding and infant care.

An exploitative marketing playbook

Triggered by The Baby Killer investigative report into Nestle’s marketing of formula milk in low and middle-income countries in the 1970s, the World Health Assembly developed the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes (the Code) in 1981 and several subsequent resolutions. However, intensive marketing of infant formula continues largely unabated, with sales from these products now approaching US$ 55 billion a year.

The first paper in the Lancet series documents how misleading marketing claims directly exploit parental anxieties around normal infant behaviours, suggesting that commercial milk products alleviate fussiness or crying, for instance, that they help with colic, or prolong night-time sleep. The authors stress that, when mothers are appropriately supported, such parental concerns can be managed successfully with exclusive breastfeeding.

“The formula milk industry uses poor science to suggest, with little supporting evidence, that their products are solutions to common infant health and developmental challenges,” says Professor Linda Richter from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. “This marketing technique clearly violates the 1981 Code, which says labels should not idealise the use of formula to sell more product.”

The series explains how formula milk marketing exploits the lack of support for breastfeeding by governments and society, while misusing gender politics to sell its products. This includes framing breastfeeding advocacy as a moralistic judgment, while presenting milk formula as a convenient and empowering solution for working mothers.

The series further draws attention to the power of the milk formula industry to influence national political decisions and interfere with international regulatory processes. In particular, the dairy and formula milk industries have established a network of unaccountable trade associations and front groups that lobby against policy measures to protect breastfeeding or control the quality of infant formula.

Society-wide changes needed

In addition to ending exploitative marketing tactics and industry influence, broader actions across workplaces, healthcare, governments, and communities are needed to effectively support women who want to breastfeed so that it becomes a collective societal responsibility, the authors state, rather than placing the onus on women.

In particular, the authors highlight the need to ensure women have adequate maternity protections assured by law, including paid maternity leave that aligns, at minimum, with the WHO-recommended duration of six months for exclusive breastfeeding. Maternity protections should further be extended to the millions of women working in the informal sector who are currently excluded from these benefits, the papers note.

Beyond parental leave, the authors call for formal recognition of the contribution of women’s unpaid care work to national development. Globally, women are estimated to perform three-quarters of all unpaid family care work – more than three times that of men. By some accounts, this contributes to around a third of a country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“Given the immense benefits of breastfeeding to their families and national development, women who wish to breastfeed need to be much better supported so that they can meet their breastfeeding goals,” said Professor Rafael Pérez-Escamilla from the Yale School of Public Health. “A large expansion in health professional training on breastfeeding, as well as statutory paid maternity leave and other protections are vital.”

Expanding training for health workers on breastfeeding is critical, the papers state, so that they can offer skilled counselling to parents before and after birth.

Mnangagwa Totally Ignores Civil Servants Plight

Red Mud and Gold Bars: Cathy Buckle

Red Mud and Gold Bars
Dear Family and Friends,
Nine young guys came running fast along a narrow path through the long grass which was as high as their shoulders. When they were almost at the road they all stopped and bent down and I wondered what was going on: had they seen something, caught something there in the long grass? For a moment my heart ticked faster as they bobbed up and down in the long, wet grass and then I smiled when I realized what was going on, they were washing the mud off their legs in a big puddle of rainwater.

Less than a minute later a Honda Fit tore down the road and stopped a few meters in front of me. The Honda Fit, a fast, economical little car which can weave in out of traffic, along verges, on pavements, paths and kerbs and runs on the smell of an oil rag, has become the all-purpose people carrier in Zimbabwe. The Honda Fit which can carry a driver and three passengers has defied all manufacturers’ specifications and Zimbabweans have perfected the art of carrying up to a dozen people at a time.

Again my heart ticked a bit faster as the Honda Fit stopped in the middle of the road and the nine guys boiled out of the long grass. The car was covered in mud, on its front and back windscreens, on the roof, doors and windows. It must have gone through a massive puddle or pothole or, most likely, done some serious off-road dodging of a police roadblock. And then in front of my disbelieving eyes nine passengers piled into the Honda Fit: two in the front passenger seat, one sitting on the others lap, four in the back squashed onto two seats and then the boot was popped open and the last three guys jumped into the boot, facing backwards, feet hanging out, and off they roared, lid up, squashed in like sardines a tin. I fell in a few metres behind them and they stopped on a corner to pick up a passenger who literally lay sideways across the laps of all the guys in the back. I could hear their shouts of laughter and went past them. For a while we were going in the same direction, they overtook me I smiled and lifted my hands, shaking my head in disbelief at the three in the boot and the guy lying across the middle and their huge smiles and waves came back at me. Aaah Zimbabwe! Every detail in this little story conceals a story in itself; a story of survival and struggle, of no jobs for hundreds of thousands of young school leavers, of a return to the days of harrowing heavy-handed police roadblocks, of illegality and negligence. But everywhere there is this little twinkle of humour and we have mastered the art of being able to laugh at ourselves.

Thinking about this little encounter which so perfectly describes everyday life in our very wet and muddy Zimbabwe, I was catching up on the news and came across the story of President Mnangagwa opening a new housing development area in Harare. He said that the top government officials he sends to solve the issue of ‘land barons’ are actually the criminals themselves. “They cannot arrest themselves because they are the thieves,” Mr Mnangagwa said. These land barons sell little plots on state land that doesn’t belong to them. Charging five to fifteen thousand US dollars cash deposits for 380 square meters of land that doesn’t belong to them they then disappear back into the long grass. They sell plots in wetlands and green belts, on land that’s already been sold to someone else, land reserved for schools or clinics and in little squares on what they call ‘housing estates.’ The bizarre part of this story came when the President said: “I have seen some of these settlements when I am flying out of the country…” How strange that the President sees them when he’s ‘flying out of Zimbabwe’ when all the time they are in plain sight right here, inside Zimbabwe, you can’t miss them in any direction you travel in. These are the same ‘settlements’ where countless thousands of people wait everyday for the knock on the door which tells them they are evicted because they are living on land that belongs to someone else.

But I can’t end this letter in a time of pounding, incessant rain and mud everywhere without some wry humour so here it is. This week a top National Prosecuting Authority official (charged with combating crime and corruption) said there wasn’t enough evidence to secure a conviction against gold smuggler Henrietta Rushwaya. Ms Rushawaya was caught red-handed with 6.9kgs of gold bars in her hand luggage at Harare airport in October 2020. Red-handed, gold bars in her handbag but not enough evidence, are you serious.

This letter now goes to people in 67 countries around the world, including in Turkey and I send them and people in Syria a message of heartfelt sorrow after the devastating earthquakes which have shattered their lives. You are ever in our thoughts.

There is no charge for this Letter From Zimbabwe but if you would like to donate please visit my website. Until next time, thanks for reading this Letter From Zimbabwe now in its 23rd year, and my books about life in Zimbabwe, a country in waiting.

Remove That ‘Bloody Scarf,’ As Just That Alone Will Fix The Economy

By Simba Chikanza | COMMENT | Cyril Ramaphosa and Emmerson Mnangagwa pose on camera, smiling while wearing their country scarfs, just as gun crime, hate crime, and murders shoot up in South Africa. CR7 has copied Mnangagwa’s scarfie idea.

Since adopting a 6 colour flag (Apartheid was just 3), South Africa’s people have become more confused and its economy slipped down to number 3, while Nigeria, which has just 2 colours (on its flag), jumped to number 1. Economies with their lowest number of colours have citizens who are less confused and more motivated for production (e.g Japan, which has the simplest flag in the world, a red dot on a white background), and even the so called ‘bloody’ China, which is now the world’s largest economy (it has just 2 colours on its flag). Look at how clean, and behaved the Japanese citizens are at the World Cup in Qatar. Motivating one person, means boosting 14 million others.

In no time at all, each person will be contributing to the GDP, individually. There is so much evidence that this alone, could be a solution to fixing the economy, for colours play a special part in motivating citizens, and boosting their productivity.

Low Salaries Haunt Zim Journalists

By A Correspondent- Low wages and delays in payment of salaries are reportedly fuelling brown envelope journalism among media practitioners.

Media watchdogs say the lowest paid journalist should get at least US$600 per month.

Media Alliance of Zimbabwe chairperson and Zimbabwe Union of Journalists national secretary-general Perfect Hlongwane yesterday told NewsDay that journalists were becoming “extortionist” because they were poorly remunerated.

The development comes after Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation journalist Tendai Munengwa and Central Intelligence Organisation operative Henry Kachere were last week arrested for extorting US$25 000 from Pedzisayi “Scott” Sakupwanya, who is the chief executive officer of Better Brands Jewellery.

“Journalists are not sufficiently remunerated because of our economic problems.  It is affecting how journalists are remunerated at their work places. The least paid journalists should at least be paid US$600 per month. If they are under-paid, their professionalism is threatened and they might accept bribes,” Hlongwane said.

He said a national employment council for journalists should be urgently formed to deal with issues of their welfare.

Take UN Advice, Mliswa Tells Mnangagwa

By A Correspondent| Norton legislator Temba Mliswa has urged President Emmerson Mnangagwa to take the advice of the United Nations and not sign the Private Voluntary Organisations Bill into law.

Posting on Twitter, the motormouth former Zanu PF provincial chairperson said he has no doubt that Mnangagwa being a reformist should not sign the PVO bill as a good gesture.

“The President would do well to take the advice of the UN Special Rapporteur and not sign the PVO Bill into law. At times the best advice is from outside. Those inside have interests to protect and will not say the truth. It’s better to serve the interests of the country than the party.

“I have no doubt that ED is a reformist as shown by the support for his ascension to power. Not signing this Bill will be a good gesture. In its current state, the PVO Bill is ill-informed and is a shortsighted political manoeuvre with no long term benefits or use for the country,” said Mliswa.

Christian Atsu Still Missing

Christian Atsu

By A Correspondent- Christian Atsu, a former Chelsea winger is still missing more than a week after the earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria on 6 February, according to his agent.

The update comes after reports that the Ghana Football Association had claimed that the former Christian Atsu had been successfully rescued from the rubble of a collapsed building following an earthquake in southern Turkey and is currently receiving treatment.

But the 31-year-old Ghanaian’s agent, Nana Sechere, subsequently posted messages on Twitter on the 8th and 9th of February saying Atsu was yet to be found, The Guardian reported.

Sechere issued another update on Tuesday confirming that, while two pairs of his shoes had been found, that remained the case.

Read the tweets:

It has been nine days since the earthquake and we still have not located Christian.

I am at the quake site in Hatay with Christian’s family. The scenes are unimaginable and our hearts are broken for all the people affected. During my time here we have been able to locate Christian Atsu’s exact room location, and we have found two pairs of his shoes.

Yesterday we received confirmation that thermal imagery was showing signs of up to five lives, however, I am told that the only real confirmation of life is through sight, smell and sound, and unfortunately we were not able [to] locate Christian.

This is a difficult situation and we are extremely grateful to all the Turkish and foreign rescue teams, local civilians and volunteers for their efforts and response in rescuing survivors. However, we urgently need more resources, including a translator, on the ground.

Things are moving incredibly slow and as a result of that many rescues are being delayed, and lives are being lost due to the lack of resources available to the workers. It is unfortunate that the club is not on the ground with us, side by side, in the search for Christian.

Their position and influence, accompanied with their local knowledge would be extremely helpful. We implore the president of the club and mayor of Hatay, Lutfu Savas, to provide additional resources to speed up the rescue efforts as a priority.

The death toll from the quakes that hit south-eastern Turkey and northern Syria has passed 35 000.

Zim Dollar Continues To Lose Value Against USD

Under-fired currency, the Zimbabwe dollar has widened year-to-date losses by 18% since the Foreign Exchange Auction Market commenced ON THE 10th of January 2023. On the latest Auction Market held on the 14th of February 2023, the Zimbabwe dollar shed 3% against the greenback to ZWL856.8403 from ZWL831.8147 in the previous Auction Market.

Since the Auction Market commenced in June 2020, the Zimbabwe dollar has depreciated by 93% while since the Zimbabwe dollar was re-introduced in 2019, the local currency has shed by 100% against the single greenback.

Among other factors, the Zimbabwe dollar continues to succumb to blackouts, reactionary fiscal policies and policy inconsistencies by the RBZ. Most of the measures being passed by both the Central Bank and the Treasury tends to backfire instead of meeting expectations.

For instance, the latest 50 percentage basis points cut is likely to increase the ZWL liquidity through increased borrowings thus, putting pressure on the Zimbabwe dollar.

Meanwhile, the highest rate received for the US Dollar was ZWL930 while the lowest was ZWL855 both up from ZWL890 and ZWL830 during the prior trading session. This signals how companies want to get rid of the Zimbabwe dollar ahead of the upcoming general elections.

From US$19 million allotted last week, US$20 million was allotted, translating to a circa US$1 million increase. Pressure for the greenback continues to mount for importing companies despite the latest revision of the export retention thresholds from 60% to 75%. This attests to the perspective that the Central Bank needs to at least increase them to 90% or COMPLETELY remove them to release pressure on Auction Market.

The Zimbabwe dollar is expected to continue dipping due to recurrent electricity blackouts, widening trade deficit and reactionary-half-baked economic policies ahead of the 2023 Presidential elections.

CCC Activists Off The Hook

Four Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) activists who allegedly threatened to kill MDC Alliance leader, Douglas Mwonzora, have been let off the hook after the State admitted its ill-preparedness to continue with the matter.

Provincial Magistrate, Langton Ndokera this Tuesday removed from remand the quartet of Godfrey Makoko (38), Justin Taurai Munyaradzi (38), Tawanda Bvumo (48) and former Chinhoyi mayor and incumbent Ward 12 Councillor, Dyke Makumbi (48), who were facing attempted murder charges, or alternatively disorderly conduct.

The State, led by Tafadzwa Knight Rwodzi, said it was not ready to proceed to trial as it was yet to put its house in order.

The matter would go ahead by way of summons.

Accused persons were Tuesday advised to seek reimbursement of bail deposits from the Clerk of Court while reporting conditions were set aside.

The four CCC cadres were out of custody on ZW$30,000 bail each and trial was expected to kick off on February 14, 2023.

At the previous court appearance, Ndokera dismissed an application by defence counsel, Kudzai Choga, who challenged further remand of the politicians.

The lawyer argued there was no point keeping his clients on remand as the State was taking too long to compile a proper docket.

However, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) official, Irene Mapfumo, informed the court that a docket had already been compiled and the matter was ready to go for trial.

Allegations against the four emanate from jeering that took place outside Chinhoyi Court Complex in November 2022 after the MDC Alliance leader withdrew a defective spoliation order in his bid to take over control of a property used as CCC offices.

Commenting on the court outcome, Bvumo, who is CCC interim provincial secretary for Mashonaland West, said Mwonzora and his Zanu PF acolytes had failed in their bid to derail the winds of change.

Tsvangirai Remembered

By A Correspondent- Tuesday marked five years since former opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Morgan Tsvangirai died.

Tsvangirai succumbed to colon cancer in South Africa aged 65.

Touted as the doyen of democracy due to his huge influence in Zimbabwean politics, Tsvangirai’s fifth year anniversary was observed under a low key atmosphere with opposition figures taking to social media to celebrate his legacy.

Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa paid a tribute to Tsvangirai for his resilience against the Zanu-PF regime.

“Five years on. We are still standing! The struggle continues! The pursuit of justice never ends. The five key lessons you taught me; never keep or carry a grudge. Do not pursue vengeance. Seek peace with all men. Ignore haters, cynics and doomsayers. Stay focused, stay the course Rest in peace (RIP) Save,” said Chamisa.

Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union paid tribute to its former Secretary General saying his role in representing workers will never be forgotten.

“Today marks the 5th anniversary of the demise of our former Secretary General Morgan Richard Tsvangirai who led the ZCTU during one of the most turbulent periods for the labour movement and distinguished himself.”

The apparent party that Tsvangirayi once led, MDC was mum in observing his fifth year anniversary with leader Douglas Mwonzora choosing the former leader’s anniversary to expel his rival Elias Mudzuri from Senate.

Emerging from ZCTU, Tsvangirai was one of the founding fathers of a once formidable MDC in 1999 and gave the ruling party then under Robert Mugabe a run for its money, coming close in 2008 to topple the revolutionary party.

Tsvangirai served as PM in a Government of National Unity (GNU) from 2009 to 2013, in a period Zimbabwe experienced political and economic sanity.

However since his demise opposition has gone through turbulence resulting in splits with Thokozani Khupe claiming as the true heiress through a court victory over then MDC- Alliance leader Chamisa.

Khupe was then booted out of MDC by Mwonzora through an extraordinary congress in 2020.

Chamisa, who once claimed that he was anointed by Tsvangirai as his successor, formed his outfit last year dumping the MDC name and symbols.

According to political analyst Lazarus Sauti, opposition politics is now premised in the hands of CCC ahead of upcoming elections.

“To say the opposition is near to non-existent after Tsvangirai’s death is far-fetched. CCC is doing well considering its performance during the 26 March 2022 by-elections,” said Sauti.

Police Bosses Dodge Responsibility Over Spike Throwing Cop

By A Correspondent| The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is desperately seeking to dodge liability for the negligent conduct of its officers, which caused the death of some people last year.

On 14 December 2022, Kevin Kabaya and Peggy Tavagadza of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), sued ZRP Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga and Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Hon. Kazembe Kazembe at Mutare High Court, claiming payment amounting to US$18 000 as damages for pain and suffering, permanent disfigurement, loss of amenities, nervous shock and future medical expenses.

The summons were issued after some delinquent ZRP officers threw some hand held metal spikes on an alleged speeding commuter omnibus in Mutare on 4 May 2022, which led to a fatal road traffic accident, loss of lives and injuries to some commuters.

Now in response to the summons, ZRP is attempting to dodge responsibility by refusing to disclose the identity of the culprits, who are police officers, who were manning the road check point and who through their negligent conduct caused the traffic accident.

In an application for exception filed at Mutare High Court recently, ZRP argued that the victims had in their summons not specified the names of the primary perpetrators, who caused the road traffic accident and hence the summons and the claim should be dismissed.

On 28 October 2022, Kabaya and Tavagadza wrote a letter to the Provincial Legal Officer at ZRP Manicaland provincial headquarters protesting that they had not been informed on whether any ZRP traffic police officers had been charged with any offence and whether any internal disciplinary procedures had been instituted arising from their reckless conduct.

Kabaya and Tavagadza said their clients were extremely concerned that they have neither been invited for interviews nor have any statements been recorded from them regarding the fatal road traffic accident.

Their clients, the human rights lawyers said, wanted to be furnished with information regarding at which stage the ZRP’s purported investigations into the matter are at and the details of all traffic police officers, who were at the scene of the accident.

They argued that in making the request they were exercising their right to access to information as enshrined in section 62 of the Constitution as read with section 7 of the Freedom of Information Act.

Shock As Woman’s Corpse Is Discovered With Missing Body Parts

By A Correspondent- A Cranborne woman was murdered by unknown assailants on Monday evening on her way home from work.

Faith Musonza’s body was found by Hatfield police with her n!pples and nails ripped off.

Her husband, Fradreck Chasara, waited for her the whole night and was sh0cked when he was called to identify her body which had some parts missing.

It is believed Faith left work at around 7pm, heading home in Cranborne.

Chasara said he called his wife to check on her, at around 8pm, but the phone rang continuously.

“After trying several times, her number suddenly became unreachable.

“I went to our bus stop hoping to find her there, but there was no one,” he said.

The supervisor told me that she had left work at around 7pm.”

I waited, but my wife never turned up until I decided to report the case at Hatfield Police Station.”

He said after filling the police report, he was told that they had found a dead woman in the area and advised that he checks the body to see if it wasn’t Faith.

“When we got there, I was shattered seeing my wife dead, lying in a pool of blood.

“What sh0cked me the most was that some of Faith’s body parts were missing, and there was blood everywhere.

“The body was taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital for a post-mortem.”

Meanwhile, Spar Zimbabwe have paid condolences to their slain employee via a poster.

“The Spar Zimbabwe family are very saddened to learn of the sad loss of Faith Musonza from Hatfield Spar.

“We would like to extend our sincere condolences to her husband, children, relatives and colleagues.

“Faith was a valued member of the Spar Zimbabwe community and she will be greatly missed.

“May her soul rest in peace.”

UK Avails Millions For Recruitment Of Health Care Workers

By A Correspondent- The United Kingdom (UK) administration has availed £15 million to facilitate the recruitment of international health and social care workers, including Zimbabweans.

In February 2022 care workers were added to the Health and Care Worker visa shortage occupation list, enabling these roles to be recruited from overseas.

There were rumours, however, that the UK would this March terminate head-hunting for nurse aides to fill the gaps created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, through a recent communication, the British government said it had extended the recruitment of health and social care employees to 2024. Reads the letter seen by NewZimbabwe:

This guidance is for local authorities and adult social care providers.

Government can confirm that it is making £15 million available over 2023 to 2024 to help support international recruitment within the adult social care sector.

The aim of this fund is to promote collaborative arrangements which reduce administrative complexity and burden, particularly for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) providers.

Reports suggest that more than 4 000 Zimbabwean healthcare workers have left for the UK since February 2021.

Data from the British Home Office in 2022 reveals that Zimbabwe is now in the top five skilled worker visa recipient countries.

Many Zimbabweans have resorted to undertaking nurse aide courses to make them eligible for recruitment as adult social care workers in the UK and other European countries.

Polygamous Man Who Killed Cheating Wife Jailed 20yrs

By A Correspondent- A 52 year old polygamous Shamva man has been jailed 20 years for killing one of his wives, after accusing her of infidǝlity.

Joseph Chogugudza, who is a member of an apostolic church sect, has 11 wives and 45 children, 28 who are under the age of 18.

He appeared before High Court judge, Justice Priscilla Munangati-Manongwa, who slammed him for painting the deceased as a pr0miscu0us woman, without evidence, to substantiate his allegations.

The court heard that sometime in April 2021, at Mandimu Village under Chief Musana in Shamva, the woman left home to go and buy sugar, without telling anyone.

She returned late and had a misunderstanding with Chogugudza.

He claimed an altercation ensued and she grabbǝd him by his mɑnh00d.

He said he struck her with a computer cable several times.

Chogugudza ordered her to confess to the other wives and then to the congregants at the church shrine.

She, however, collapsed and died the following morning.

Armed with results of the post-mortem, the State proved that Chogugudza’s wife died from a head trauma, respiratory and cerebral contusion.

In his defence, Chogugudza claimed he did not constructively contribute to her death, saying she could have sustained injuries from her fall.

He said he’d even compensated her family with 10 beasts.

In her ruling, Justice Munangati-Manongwa said Chogugudza was remorseless throughout the trial, and instead justified his actions.

“In essence, the deceased had done nothing wrong apart from going to the shops to buy sugar, a normal chore which any housewife could do.

“It is apparent from his evidence that he meant to make the deceased an example to his other wives as per his own words.

“The wanton assault by the accused on the deceased, which was done indiscriminately using force and causing fatal injuries, cannot go unpunished. Further, society, and indeed the accused’s family, needs to be protected from a tyrant like the accused.

“He, therefore, needs to be incarcerated for a lengthy period of time as advocated by the State.

“This is unavoidable where the breadwinner lands at the deep end of crime.

“Given the aforementioned, the accused is sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.”

Man Accuses Cleric Of Snatching Wife

A Harare man who is having marital disputes with his wife told the court that their problems were being caused by a pastor from the church where her wife fellowships.

The matter came to light at the Harare Civil Court, during cross-examination when Magistrate Ms Tamara Chibindi asked Danger Wisikesi why he was assaulting his wife, Ruth Jack.

Jack had applied for a peace order against her husband whom she accused of assaulting and accusing her of being promiscuous.

“On December 6 last year, my husband assaulted me because he thought that I was dating a man from our church. Up to now, there is no peace at the house over that matter. I am praying that you grant me a peace order,” she said.

However, Wisikesi denied the allegations arguing that he never assaulted her but was angry as his wife was having an affair with a pastor from her church which is called Simbarashe Apostolic Church.

“On the day in question, I never assaulted her except to push her after I got angry when she asked me why I was accusing her of dating the pastor.

“This is after I had asked her where she was coming from after 10pm without even preparing any meal for the family,” he said.

He said Jack told him that she had walked out the pastor who had visited her at that hour.

He complained that the pastor was always at his house alone with his wife during the day when he was at work.

Wisikesi said ever since his wife became the personal assistant of the pastor, she no longer communicated with him during the day over the phone as before.

“She no longer chats with me during the day and goes on trips with the pastor. This has really affected me emotionally and has affected my performance at work.”

When asked about the affair, Jack said she was not in love with the pastor.

“Yes, I get along with the pastor but we are not having an affair. He only comes to pick me up so that we can go to the mountain for prayers together,” she said.

Magistrate Ms Chibindi advised Jack to stop allowing the pastor from visiting her at home but meet at church only, if it is really church business to avoid problems in her marriage.

She dismissed her application for lack of merit.- The Herald

AKA’s Family Shoots Down Conspiracy Theories

“…We do not condone what’s been said about his friends and those making dangerous statements and we appeal with them to cease from doing so…”

AKA’s assassination has left his family members, friends and girlfriend traumatised and shattered.
Kiernan “AKA” Forbes was gunned down outside a popular restaurant in Durban on Friday evening in a shooting that also resulted in the death of his lifelong friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, a chef and author.

AKA’s mother Lynn, brother Steffan, and girlfriend Nadia Nakai were visibly distraught and struggled to hold back the tears as the rapper’s father and family spokesperson Tony Forbes made a statement to the media on Tuesday Afternoon at Rockets Bryanston, an upscale restaurant and lifestyle centre in Bryanston.

Lynn and Nadia, who donned black dresses and black sunglasses, held hands and comforted each other with hugs and whispers throughout Tony’s speech.

When taking to the podium, which was placed alongside a lit white candle and AKA’s picture, Tony expressed his gratitude towards his sons, Mzansi, his son’s fans, friends and family members who had shown them support as they mourn his son’s untimely death.

Tony went on to thank AKA’s friends, former Dream Team member Lusasa “Saso” Ngcobo, Don Design, and DJ Benny Maverick, among others, for being there for his son “from the start to the finish”.

“The close friends that he had, they’ve been at our side just like they’ve been with him since Friday evening. They’ve been at our side supporting us,” he said.

“We would like to say that his colleagues and associates have extended themselves beyond expectation. They’ve really really gone out of their way to support us, and we thank his wonderful neighbours who have comforted and accommodated us in this ti Addressing speculations and conspiracies that have pinned his close friends as suspects in his death, Tony slammed the claims, revealing that AKA’s friends, who were at the scene, were left traumatised by the incident.

“We send our love and support to friends who were with Kiernan in his last moments in Durban and we feel their trauma and pain as well. Our home will always be open to them. We do not condone what’s been said about his friends and those making dangerous statements and we appeal with them to cease from doing so.”

Tony said while they were aware of the NPA’s declaration, their focus as a family now was to celebrate their son’s life and “give him a dignified send-off with as little distraction as possible” and sent their condolences to the Motsoane family for the death of Tebello, who was AKA’s friend who “played a key role in laying the foundation” of the rapper’s career.me. It just shows how truly loved Kiernan was. And we are proud of that.” -Timeslive

President Chamisa Pays Tribute To Dr Morgan Richard Tsvangirai

Tinashe Sambiri|CCC leader President Nelson Chamisa has described the late former Prime Minister and MDC founding president, the Right Honourable Dr Morgan Richard Tsvangirai as a great mentor.

Dr Tsvangirai died on February 14, 2018 after a long battle with cancer.

Writing on Twitter, President Chamisa described the late veteran opposition leader as a ” doyen of democracy” and an icon of the people’s struggle.

“5 YEARS ON..We are still standing! The struggle continues! The pursuit of justice never ends.

The 5 key lessons you taught me; Never keep or carry a grudge.Don’t pursue vengeance. Seek peace with all men. Ignore haters, cynics and doomsayers.

Lawyer Caught Lying

A lawyer with Mutumbwa Law Firm, Milliscent Moyo who was standing in for Tino Chinyoka who has been representing property developer George Katsimberis was today reprimanded for lying in court by a Harare magistrate.
Moyo had sought a postponement for her client’s case saying the lead counsel went to South Africa for medical attention on Monday.

It turned out that he was actually in the country.

Harare magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti-Guwuriro dismissed the application for postponement of the matter saying Katsimberis had other lawyers who were sitting on the bar. She said the trial must proceed after lunch without fail.

Chinyoka, who was actually in Harare then heard that his client will be subjected to trial during his absence. He quickly turned up in court around 2pm to the surprise of everyone.

He said he was supposed to leave the country late on Tuesday, adding that there was miscommunication with Moyo.

But Muchuchuti-Guwuriro was not impressed and reprimanded Moyo for lying in court.

“The problem the court is having is that it is said advocate Chinyoka travelled last night to South Africa while in actual fact he is in the country. The legal practitioners are officers of the court and must always say the truth,” Muchuchuti-Guwuriro said.

Katsimberis was in the middle of his application for referral to the Constitutional Court when the matter was adjourned last month.

The property developer is facing charges of fraud after he allegedly built a showroom in a joint venture agreement in Borrowdale using a fraudulently acquired building plan.

Chinyoka who was filing an application for referral of the matter to the ConCourt was then excused by the court and told to leave for South Africa for his medical attention.

Muchuchuti-Guwuriro said Katsimberis’ lawyer, advocate Tawanda Kanengoni should proceed with the trial.

Chinyoka however refused to leave the bar saying he will continue with his application for referral to the Constitutional Court in his current state of health.

Katsimberis, through Chinyoka, submitted that he is seeking the ConCourt to determine whether his rights are being violated when his key witness was arrested.– AMH

Why You Must Avoid Formula Milk

Shock As Goalkeeper Dies After Saving Penalty

A goalkeeper in Belgium died from a heart attack just moments after he saved a penalty during a match on Saturday.

Arne Espeel, who died at the age of 25, was playing for Winkel Sport B in the seventh tier league match against Westrozebeke.

The incident happened early in the second half when the opposition were awarded a penalty.

Espeel managed to save the penalty kick but collapsed onto the turf soon after celebrating the save.

The medics rushed to the scene and spent some time attending to him.

He was taken to the hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.

The events unfolded in front of Espeel’s parents, who were watching from the stands, while his brother Aaron was on the subs bench for Winkel Sport.

A club statement read: “Arne has played for us since he was a kid, and everybody really liked him.

“It’s impossible to understand how something like this could happen to someone so young.

“He had been a completely healthy young lad before.”

Winkel sporting director Patrick Rotsaert then later added: “This is a disaster, and a shock for us all.

“Arne was a lovely guy, and always ready to help others.

“It is a bitter blow, above all for his family and our entire club.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Neymar Speaks On Row With PSG Official

Neymar has opened up on the clash with sporting director Luis Campos after PSG’s 3-1 Ligue 1 defeat to AS Monaco on Saturday.

The row came after Campos accused some footballers of a “lack of aggressiveness” after the team endured a poor week as they were also knocked out the Coupe de France by Marseille.

Neymar and Marquinhos responded in disagreement and this led to a heated dressing room argument between the three.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League round-of-16 first leg against Bayern Munich, Neymar said the dressing room confrontation is part of football.

“It happened, a little discussion, we weren’t in agreement. It’s part of football,” he told a news conference on Monday. “Things happen every day. But I love them all.

“It’s like with my girlfriend. Football isn’t just love and friendship. There is respect, but there have to be disagreements and discussions sometimes are needed to help you improve.

“We are not used to losing, so of course when we lose matches, that can disturb us. But it’s part of the process of getting better.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Magistrate Ms Chibindi advised Jack to stop allowing the pastor from visiting her at home but meet at church only, if it is really church business to avoid problems in her marriage.

She dismissed her application for lack of merit.- The Herald

Fire Guts Mpilo Hospital

By- Fire has gutted Mpilo Central Hospital following an electrical fault.

Mpilo Central Hospital Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Narcisius Dzvanga said members of staff used fire extinguishers to put out the fire before the fire brigade arrived.
“We had a small fire incident around 7:45 am. It was dictated in the form of smoke and was then traced to the control box on the second floor. The fire was put out by members of staff using fire extinguishers on the floor. Patients are safe and staff are at work, there were no injuries and nothing was burnt except the control panel,” he said.
However, the fire left the Nutrition Unit and the University Office within the hospital without power.
The hospital has been affected by a series of fires that occurred in 2018, 2019, and in 2022.
In May 2021, a fire that gutted the doctors’ accommodation facilities left 39 healthcare workers homeless.
Following the series of fire incidents, Government built and completed the doctors’ quarters last year. Chronicle

Another ZINASU Leader Deserts Chamisa

By- Another former Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) leader has deserted the opposition for Zanu PF

Former spokesperson, Tatenda ‘Zuj’ Mandondo is the second ex-Zinasu leader to desert the opposition after Tafadzwa Mugwadi in recent years.

Mndondo described the CCC as a sinking ship which lacks seriousness.

He was part of scores of “deserters” unveiled and welcomed into the ruling party fold by President Emmerson Mnangagwa over the weekend. Mandondo spoke to NewZimbabwe:

We all have choices and decisions to make in life that are necessary for national development and unity of purpose and for them to scrutinise thoroughly their continued stay in a sinking ship.

My decision to join Zanu-PF was made of full body and mind inspired by the need to assist in the National framework and be part of a collaborative and unified political outfit that does not exhibit traits of chaos, confusion and despondency.

The opposition lacks seriousness in its approach and is the lone voice of a lone man or elite individuals, however, with ZANU PF you easily understand the command structure and still have your voice considered and your efforts acknowledged.

The issue with some pressure groups masquerading as political parties is regrettable as they lack proper substance to capacitate the masses they claim to lead, they do not provide opportunities, the democracy narrative being toyed around with has shifted dramatically and drastically from the days of the late former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and if they continue on their self-destructive path they will soon be a mere memory on the horizon.

Mandondo was unveiled as a new member alongside late MDC founding President Morgan Tsvangirai’s brother Collins, who was coming from the Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC Alliance.

Neymar Speaks On Clash With PSG Boss

Goalkeeper Dies After Saving Penalty

Breastfeeding vs Formula Milk

Zimbabwe is NOT a democracy and Zanu PF is rigging 2023 elections

By Wilbert Mukori| Zimbabweans love to talk about democracy but most of us have no clue what they are talking about. None!

“Democracy is the government of the people, for the people and by the people!” said Abraham Lincoln. He was the President of USA during that country’s civil war – the most divisive, traumatic period in that nation’s history.

The right to free, fair and credible elections is the heart and soul of democracy because the holding of free elections not only gives the people a meaningful say in the governance of the country, it is the ultimate expression of people’s power, people governing themselves.

Democracy and free elections are the two sides of the same coin; you cannot have a healthy and functioning democracy if you cannot guarantee free, fair and credible elections.

Ever since Zimbabwe attained her independence in 1980 to date, the country has never ever held free, fair and credible elections. Never! Mugabe and his cronies, made it clear if Zanu PF failed to win the 1980 elections the bush war would continue. The people voted to end the bush war and as soon as he got into power Mugabe moved swiftly to impose the de facto one party dictatorship.

Mugabe reneging on the time honoured “One man, one vote!” rallying call because he did not trust the British and the colonial administration of Ian Smith to hold free, fair and credible elections. He had the chance to redeem himself by restoring the democratic right of every Zimbabwean to free elections, instead he has rigged elections under the pretext his political opponents were puppets of the West.

So for 43 years and counting Zanu PF has denying the people of Zimbabwe a meaningful vote and a democratic government, a people’s government, under the pretext such a vote would result in regime change, replacing Zanu PF regime with a Western puppet regime.

Mugabe kick started the patronage system by buying ministerial limos for his Zanu PF cronies to replace the ordinary cars Ian Smith gave his ministers. Zanu PF leaders have become notorious for the blind loyalty to Mugabe. Even at the height of the Gukurahundi massacre; Zanu PF leaders saw nothing, heard nothing, said nothing and did nothing.

The patronage system has spread to every section of Zimbabwe society, it is central to the Zanu PF dictatorship and hegemony. It has come at a great price to the nation, it is the root cause of the gross mismanagement and rampant corruptions resulting in the criminal waste of the country’s material and human resources.

Imposing a de facto one-party dictatorship was a feeble excuse to hide the Mugabe and his cronies’ insatiable greed for absolute political power and the influence and wealth it brings – the essence of bad governance. By the turn of the century, just two decade since independence, the country was already in serious economic trouble and political paralysis.

The country needed democratic changes to stop the curse of rigged elections and bad governance.

In 1999, Morgan Tsvangirai and his friends launched their party MDC, short for Movement for Democratic Change, in answer to the people’s clamour for democratic changes to restore their freedoms and rights including the right to a meaningful vote. After 23 years, 5 of which in the 2008 to 2013 Government of National Unity (GNU), MDC has failed to implement even one token democratic reform.

Mugabe bribed the MDC leaders with the trappings of high office and they forgot about the reforms, just as readily as the Zanu PF leaders had done. Indeed, Zanu PF cronies crowed about how MDC leaders had sold out.

“Mazivanhu eMDC adzidza kudya anyerere!” (MDC leaders have learned to enjoy the gravy train good-life, they will never rock the boat!” boasted the Zanu PF cronies, when asked why MDC leaders were not implementing any democratic reforms during the GNU.

Since the GNU debacle MDC/CCC leaders have insisted on participating in flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy and thus perpetuating the dictatorship in return for a few gravy train seats. The nation’s hope of ending the Zanu PF autocracy is being sold for 30 pieces of silver and the people, the victims of the blatant betrayal.

The people of Zimbabwe had risked life and limb to elect the MDC leaders on the understanding that once in power they would deliver the democratic changes the nation was denying for. The MDC supporters had repeated change in their slogans to no end. And yet when the golden opportunity to implement reforms are arrived and was callously wasted, the people had failed to even notice it.

Indeed, even today with the benefit of hindsight many Zimbabweans still have no clue the primary purpose of 2008 to 2013 GNU was to implement the democratic reforms. They still don’t realise that MDC leaders sold out big time by failing to implement even one reform during the GNU when the country had is golden opportunity to do so.

It is ironic that many Zimbabweans are participating in these flawed and illegal Zimbabwean elections, regardless of the mountain of evidence Zanu PF is rigging the process under the delusion these are democratic elections. By participating, these people are giving Zanu PF legitimacy and thus perpetuating the dictatorship and their own suffering.

It was the Greeks, bless them, who gave mankind democracy as a system of government in place of the failed autocracy, oligarchy, monarch, etc. The Greeks realised back then, 2 500 years ago, that for democracy to work, the people must be educated.

Given that both Zanu PF and most of the country’s opposition are only interested in securing political power for themselves; the need to educate the Zimbabwe populous is now a matter of national survival if the country is end the curse of rigged elections and bad governance.

The first lesson for Zimbabweans is that Zimbabwe is NOT a democracy, Zanu PF is rigging the 2023 elections and CCC are participating to give Zanu PF legitimacy in return for a share of the spoils of power. The rational response is to refuse to participate in the flawed elections, pointing out evidence of rigging and violence, denounce CCC for selling out by failing to implement reforms and participating in the elections out of greed and, last but most important of all, make sure Zanu PF does not get political legitimacy!

ZBC Reporter In Trouble Over US$25 000 Extortion Money

By- Tendai Munengwa, a senior ZBC reporter and a Central Intelligence Organisation agent, Henry Kachere, are in trouble for allegedly demanding US$25 000 from gold dealer Scott Sakupwanya to destroy incriminating evidence against him.

Mnengwa (44), of Hillside in Harare and Kachere (40), of Seke, appeared before Harare Magistrates Court last Saturday charged with extortion and were remanded in custody to February 13 for their bail application.

What happened:

The court heard that the duo hatched a plan to extort Sakupwanya, the CEO of Better Brands Jewellery, ZimLive reported.

On February 8, Munengwa allegedly told Sakupwanya that the CIO had “sensitive classified information in respect of illegal gold dealings” by his company.

Munengwa is also alleged to have said the evidence could be destroyed by Kachere, who is attached to the CIO’s Counter Intelligence Unit, upon the payment of US$25 000.

The National Prosecuting Authority told the court:

As a result of the exerted pressure, Sakupwanya indicated that he could afford US$15 000.

After accepting Sakupwanya’s offer, Munengwa allegedly advised the gold dealer that they would meet at 6 PM on February 9, 2023, so that he could introduce him to the CIO officer dealing with the matter.

The court heard that Sakupwanya called in the police who obtained a trap authority.

At the appointed time, Sakupwanya gave the trap money to one of his security officers, Tozivepi Milward, to give it to Munengwa and his accomplice outside his office at 2 Elliot Drive, Greendale, Harare.

Munengwa showed Milward a file which he claimed contained the incriminating documents.

Milward handed over the trap money to Munengwa before detectives closed in and took the two men into custody.

Police recovered US$15 000 in real and counterfeit notes which had been used in the trap.

Mnangagwa Confirms His Allies Are Thieves

“Is Jacob Mafume here (Harare Mayor)? This time we are going to take control of the councils in the coming elections. The councils have failed to collect refuse and potholes are everywhere. Local authorities are reminded that the provision of often interlinked and functional facilities remains imperative.

“To this end, the prioritisation of backbone infrastructure such as water, health, waste management, transport and other related services is critical,” he said.

“I just received a call from a Police officer Detective Manjengwa from Kuwadzana Police Station requesting me to come for an interrogation regarding the below tweet. Apparently a lady known as Morelife has opened a case against me for breaching the cybersecurity act,” said Hwende.

On 5 February, Hwende posted demanding the arrest of a woman named Morelife.

Pastor Beds Married Woman

By- A Harare man who is having marital disputes with his wife told the court that their problems were being caused by a pastor from the church where her wife fellowships.

She dismissed her application for lack of merit. Herald

Ex Zisco Workers Petition Parly

By SA Correspondent- About 20 members of the Ziscosteel Pension Fund have petitioned Parliament to press for the payment of US$3 million in outstanding pensions, documents obtained by NewsDay Business yesterday showed.

This figure translates to about $2,5 billion at the prevailing official foreign currency exchange rate.

The petition says the firm’s ex-workers were ready to be paid in Zimbabwe dollars.

The seven-page petition, which was submitted to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Finance and Economic Development about 10 days ago, showed that the 20-member group served the troubled steelmaker for a combined 600 years.

After leaving the firm at various stages, their attempts to be paid their pensions have been frustrated for a period spanning over half a decade, according to the Zimbabwe Pension and Insurance Rights Trust (ZimPIRT), which is representing the ex-Zisco staff.

Once southern Africa’s largest integrated steel operation, Zisco collapsed under the weight of unrestricted plunder and corruption by Zimbabwe’s elite over a decade ago.

Today, its Redcliffe operation — once a national pride — has been reduced to heaps of mangled steel and disintegrating furnaces.

Several global steel firms have attempted to take over the State-run firm, but many of the promising deals have faltered for various reasons.

Phiri gave her the keys and he opened the boot and placed the axe.

He subsequently opened the driver’s door and drove away at a high speed.
