Billiat Honoured

Khama Billiat has been named in the Confederation of African Football Champions League Team of the Decade.

Billiat made the team following his performance during the 2015/16 season when he was still with Mamelodi Sundowns.

He won the Champions League trophy in that campaign and CAF named him the second best Africa-based player of the year behind the then Sundowns teammate Denis Onyango.

Billiat also played in another Champions League final in 2021, with Kaizer Chiefs, but lost to Al Ahly.

Uganda goalkeeper Onyango and Percy Tau, who were both part of Sundowns’ 2016 winning team, were also included in the list.

This makes Tau (South Africa), Billiat (Zimbabwe) and former TP Mazambe defender Stoppila Sunzu (Zambia) the only players from the COSAFA Region to be included in the Champions League Team of the Decade.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Man “Refuses” To Be Dumped By Wife

A WOMAN was granted a peace order against her suicidal ex-husband, who has been constantly stalking and abusing her verbally and emotionally.

Rumbidzai Padenga had applied for a protection order against her ex-husband, Paradzai Mutungwazi, at the Harare Civil Court.

Magistrate Tamara Chibindi granted her application.

Rumbidzai told the court that Paradzai was in the habit of stalking and insulting her in public.

“He even threatens to commit suicide if I don’t reconcile with him.

“He has attempted to take his own life before and was hospitalised for some time.

“He has never laid a hand on me, but threatens to harm me,” Rumbidzai said.

She added:

“He also threatens to kidnap our children so that he can stay with them.

“He goes to their school, and they run away from him because they are afraid of him.”

Paradzai was not in court, and magistrate Chibindi granted the protection order in default.

Katsande Defends Billiat

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande has backed his former teammate and fellow countryman Khama Billiat, who is struggling to reach top form.

Billiat is enduring his worst run in the South African top-flight after managing just one goal and two assists in 17 league appearances, stretching back to the previous campaign.

The slump in form has attracted criticism from all corners, with the club’s supporters and former players expressing their discontent with the Zimbabwean forward’s contribution.

But Katsande feels that Billiat brings value to the team beyond goals and assists.

“I know Khama is a big boy, he’s my little brother and I always spend time with him, always telling him how important he is to the club and the setup,” Katsande said, according to KickOff.com.

“I always tell him, ‘You are our spearhead, you are our best player, so you need to know that you are the best. We are coming from five months without playing football, so obviously there’s a little bit of rust, but what you can do is contribute towards the team.’

“So, at the moment, yes, he’s not getting there where we know him, but look at his contribution to the club and the team, he’s very, very useful and that’s why he’s always selected to play.

“Goals will come, we just need to be patient with him and give him confidence, which is what he needs at the moment, and we will try to put him in a comfortable position whereby all he thinks about is just playing well and helping the team.

“The most important thing, as much as you are a good player, you need to be a team player. So, basically, this guy is a big player but he’s a team player.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

ZRP Cop Trapped Inside Married Woman’s House

CHIPINGE – A cheeky Police officer is bundled at the house of a Chipinge woman he arrested and detained for hours on September 18, 2022 but then started sending love and steamy messages immediately after her release.

Chipinge Times is reliably informed that Julius Mucheri was trapped at the Kositina homestead in Mugiyo Village in Ward 8 Chipinge last night. His captors tied his hands and legs together after they overpowered him and Police had not yet collected their colleague since yesterday.

The Officer Commanding Chipinge/Chimanimani, chief Superintendent Godfrey Chinyanganya professed ignorance over the incident.

“I am not aware of the incident. We will investigate that,” he said.

However, Memory Mandaa the woman the cop proposed love to confirmed the incident to Chipinge Times.

She said that Mucheri is stationed at Mabheka Police Base and he was handling a land dispute case between the Madoza and Kositina family when he started proposing love to Mandaa who is married to one of the Kositina sons who works in South Africa.

On September 18, 2022 Mucheri allegedly arrested Mandaa and her mother-in-law for breaching a peace order between the warring families. The two allegedly spent the whole day detained at Junction Gate Police Base.

“I was shocked when Mucheri started calling me after our release. He called me and asked if we had travelled well and then immediately afterwards started proposing love to me. I explained my marital status to him but he would not stop.

“I called my husband in SA and he advised me to trap him. I then agreed to Mucheri’s advances and allowed him to come home for quality time,” said Mandaa.

Some of the messages read;

Last night Mucheri then came and entered Mandaa’s bedroom but all hell broke loose before he had even warmed up to sex.

“I secretly beeped my in-laws who were hiding outside and they rushed in and found Mucheri in the room. He tried fighting them as he wanted to run away but he was overpowered and his legs and hands tied. We called the Officer in Charge Chipinge and told him the story. Police still hasn’t arrived to pick him up since last evening,” she said. – Masvingo Mirror

Mendy Bounces Back

Edouard Mendy is back in the Chelsea but coach Graham Potter has refused to guarantee him a regular first XI berth in the coming weeks.

Mendy missed the Blues’ last two matches with a knee injury.

The goalkeeper has recovered from the setback and will be available for selection in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League clash at home to AC Milan.

But due to a heavy fixture that will follow, Potter is hoping to rotate his players, with Kepa Arrizabalaga set to start in goals in some games.

“I think if you look at what we’ve got over the next six weeks, it’s an incredible schedule,” Potter told the media on Monday ahead of the AC Milan encounter.

“So I’m in no rush to label anyone one or two or anything like that. I want to help Edou get fit and ready to play, which he’s done really well so far.

“Then we’ve got two goalkeepers, and in an ideal world you want football to decide. We’ve got two we really believe in and that’s a really good situation for us.”

Potter also revealed that N’Golo Kante is making progress on a hamstring injury that’s kept him out since August.

“My focus at the moment is to help rehabilitate N’Golo in a good way so he’s available for us, because when he’s on the pitch he’s a huge asset for us,” said the gaffer.

“The other stuff is between the club and him. My focus is to help him get fit, get him enjoying his football, because there’s not many players in world football like NG.

“So the quicker he’s back for us the better. So that’s where I’ll leave my focus.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

THE KEEP WALKING:

AFRICA TOP 30 LIST
Celebrates African creatives who are boldy pushing culture forward across the continent and abroad.

Johannesburg, October 5th, 2022 – Johnnie Walker and Trace have partnered in an innovative new initiative, KEEP WALKING: AFRICA TOP 30, a definitive list recognising next generation cultural shapeshifters from across the African continent.

The List will identify and celebrate 30 next gen African cultural pioneers and visionaries who are not always recognised for it but are boldly pushing culture forward and making impact on the continent’s creative economy across music, film, media, fashion, and art.

The list of nominees will be revealed in October while members of the public are also encouraged to vote for cultural shapeshifters who they believe have given impetus to and moved culture forward, both across Africa and abroad.

“The culture is shifting across Africa in the most amazing ways, and we want this list to be a true reflection of the best next generation of cultural innovators from across the continent. We want creators to know that we see them, we hear them, and we celebrate them for their excellence. Trace is delighted to be partnering with Johnnie Walker™ in bringing this new awards platform to life,” says Valentine Gaudin-Muteba, Trace Managing Director, Southern Africa.

Committed to a spirit of progress and moving forward for over 200 years – and today working with some of the world’s top artists – Johnnie Walker™ celebrates stories of creative energy, determination and pushing boundaries. This legacy continues with the KEEP WALKING: AFRICA TOP 30 platform in which Johnnie Walker™ and Trace have worked with top talent managers and industry leaders across the continent to identify a definitive list of pan-African cultural shape shifters.

KEEP WALKING: AFRICA TOP 30 comes at a time when trends for Africa’s creative economy are overwhelmingly positive. UNESCO reports indicate that Africa’s still largely untapped film industry could quadruple revenue to $20 billion, and create an additional 20 million jobs, while digital music streaming revenue in Africa is expected to reach US$500 million by 2025.

“These figures all indicate that now is the moment for African creatives to showcase their talents and be acknowledged both on the continent and globally. Our intention for the KEEP WALKING: AFRICA TOP 30 list is to not only recognize them but to be an inspiration to all African creators to take bold steps in shifting the continent’s culture, especially as the world re-opens after lockdown,” says Adrian De Wet, Category Brand Manager, Beer and Reserve – Partner and Emerging Markets.

“In the spirit of our founder, John Walker, who had to innovate the status quo of how Whisky was blended, packaged and delivered to the world and which revolutionized the Whisky world forever, we applaud and celebrate those who tread their own paths and leave big steps in their wake.”

Mental Health A Global Priority

Whilst the pandemic has, and continues to, take its toll on our mental health, the ability to reconnect through World Mental Health Day 2022 will provide us with an opportunity to re-kindle our efforts to protect and improve mental health.

Many aspects of mental health have been challenged; and already before the pandemic in 2019 an estimated one in eight people globally were living with a mental disorder. At the same time, the services, skills and funding available for mental health remain in short supply, and fall far below what is needed, especially in low and middle income countries.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a global crisis for mental health, fueling short- and long-term stresses and undermining the mental health of millions. Estimates put the rise in both anxiety and depressive disorders at more than 25% during the first year of the pandemic. At the same time, mental health services have been severely disrupted and the treatment gap for mental health conditions has widened.

Growing social and economic inequalities, protracted conflicts, violence and public health emergencies affect whole populations, threatening progress towards improved well-being; a staggering 84 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced during 2021. We must deepen the value and commitment we give to mental health as individuals, communities and governments and match that value with more commitment, engagement and investment by all stakeholders, across all sectors. We must strengthen mental health care so that the full spectrum of mental health needs is met through a community-based network of accessible, affordable and quality services and supports.

Stigma and discrimination continue to be a barrier to social inclusion and access to the right care; importantly, we can all play our part in increasing awareness about which preventive mental health interventions work and World Mental Health Day is an opportunity to do that collectively. We envision a world in which mental health is valued, promoted and protected; where everyone has an equal opportunity to enjoy mental health and to exercise their human rights; and where everyone can access the mental health care they need.

WHO will work with partners to launch a campaign around the theme of Making Mental Health & Well-Being for All a Global Priority. This will be an opportunity for people with mental health conditions, advocates, governments, employers, employees and other stakeholders to come together to recognize progress in this field and to be vocal about what we need to do to ensure Mental Health & Well-Being becomes a Global Priority for all.

Croco Motors Case Wrongful Arrest | FULL TEXT

The Commissioner – General
Zimbabwe Republic Police
Police General Headquarters Harare.

19 September 2022
Hon. Commissioner sir ,
Re: ANONYMOUS REPORT AGAINST ABUSE OF POLICE FORCE AND STATE
MACHINERY.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has been dragged and used to victimize a Zimbabwean woman who is embroiled in a legal battle with Croco Motors. We have observed that there was :
1. Wrong arrest and detention with the intention of intimidating her out of a court case
2. Docket was not properly compiled
3. The accused person was not notified of her charges, she was denied CRB number and also denied a chance to see the docket or what she was being accused of
4. There was over reach , abuse of state resources and heavy handed apartheid policing tactics where employed in a bid to intimidate and cause emotional damage to the accused person
5. The police harassed accused person and her lawyer , the accused person was later released after spending a night in the cells at Marlborough police station. , they were given a copy of a ZRP form 390whose serial number is 0019841CID ref 90/03/22but did not have a CRB number
It is our strong conviction that someone at CROCO MOTORS abused their personal relationship with a member of the police force or bribed a member of the police force to institute the aforementioned allegations on a woman who is embroiled in a legal fight with CROCO motors.
The ordeal was disturbing and tainted the reputation and image of the Zimbabwe Republic Police. This appalling behavior has prompted that we raise this issue with you as an anonymous complaint as we are members of the police force who witnessed this from a distance and felt a need to fight for the victimized woman.
We do hope that your office will look into the matter accordingly
Kind regards
Anonymous complainant

Controversial Shadaya Wins New Fan Across Zambezi

By A Correspondent| Controversial social media personality Shadaya Knight has won a new fan in Zambia’s motormouth politician Joseph Kalimbwe who said he was charmed by his views about men and women.

Posting on Twitter, Kalimbwe said Shadaya had a sober mind urging other young people to tap into his wisdom.

In Zimbabwe, Shadaya always divides opinion with some agreeing that his views are what most men believe though they may not have the guts to say it while some feel he is just an anti-women activist who is bitter over some unrevealed issues.

Coming To Zim Not Safe At All – Mukanya

By A Correspondent

Chimurenga music guru Thomas Mukanya Mapfumo will miss the burial of his brother Lancelot as he fears for his life.

Lancelot is one of the founding members of the Blacks Unlimited and a brother to Mukanya, who died last month in the US.

In an exclusive interview with the Standard from his United States base on Friday, Mapfumo said he will not make the trip to Zimbabwe for the burial of Lancelot. He said:

Lancelot was my brother, workmate and friend. I and the band have lost someone we worked with throughout our lives. It won’t be possible to fill his gap.

Lancelot will be buried in Zimbabwe, his homeland. We are making arrangements to bring his body from here.

Unfortunately, I won’t make the trip to Zimbabwe because of political reasons, as you know I am not a favourite of the government.

I fear for my life and safety if I come to Zimbabwe.

Mukanya has been living in the United States for many years after fleeing persecution during the Robert Mugabe era. He was a critic of the regime.

Mapfumo is also critical of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s regime.

He says Zimbabwe is not moving forward adding that the current government has failed the people and the gains of liberation have been wiped off. He added:

I am totally against the Mnangagwa regime. People, the young people should take into the streets and remove Mnangagwa.

I hate an oppressor, that’s why I am in exile. If it was to me I would be living large in Zimbabwe with farms and stealing money like they do, but I decided to stand with the people.

He said he stands with the oppressed, a message inherent in his music.

Mapfumo was imprisoned during the Smith regime and after independence criticised the new black government led by Robert Mugabe for corruption.

He was targeted and harassed prompting him to move to the United States in the late 1990s.

After Mugabe’s overthrow in 2017, Mapfumo returned to Zimbabwe in 2018, to a massive show named ‘Homecoming Bira’ in the capital.

He returned to his base after a four-month-long visit, but Mapfumo now claims that he is not safe from political danger.

Retracing President Chamisa’s Struggle Against Zanu PF

Decades of naked contact with repression.

By Gift Ostallos Siziba

Came across this interesting yet so revealing piece of history of our Change Champion in Chief, Advocate Nelson Chamisa , frontline fighters and anti regime crusaders.

In September 1999, Advocate Chamisa and a team of pro democracy students confronted the regime and its masquerades at a local tertiary institution.

“You’re implants of Zanupf who are masquerading as genuine, nonpartisan commissioners” Chamisa said.

Being in the frontline of a struggle without dithering or falling for the trappings and trinkets of the regime is a very important virtue of leadership.

About World Mental Health Day Message

Man Bashes Kids Over Sadza

A man has appeared in court before Chitungwiza magistrate Ms Tendai Mutamba for allegedly beating up his two children using an electric cable as a form of discipline as the two were fighting over food that had been served.

Claudius Zuva (30) is being charged with two counts of ill treatment of children.

He was granted $10 000 bail and was instructed not to interfere with witnesses.

The trial is expected to start tomorrow.

Prosecuting, Mr Malvern Mwendera told the court that on September 27, the complainant Alvin Kamwanza aged eight was sharing food with his younger brother Adrian Zuva at around 6pm and had a quarrel over the quantity of food.

The younger brother felt he had been given a smaller portion and he began to cry.

When the father got into the house, he asked why they were making noise and the two explained. This did not go down well with Zuva, who beat them up with an electric cable because they had eaten sadza before the stipulated supper time.

The children sustained some injuries.

The two were rescued by their fellow tenant Vimbai Musugandi.

The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of Zuva.

Errant Government Entities And Local Authorities Were Enjoying Impunity

Government has been accused of failing to force State entities to regularly submit financial statements to the Auditor-General (AG), Mildred Chiri for audit.

A report by the Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development (Zimcodd) issued this week revealed that ministries and local authorities have consistently failed to implement the AG’s recommendations in her audit reports, which has resulted in corrupt activities.

The Zimcodd report stated that the errant government entities and local authorities were enjoying impunity.

“The findings (in AG reports) do not inspire shock from readers as they are consistent with the usual reporting by the office of the Auditor-General. The challenge continues to be enforcing compliance of State entities to submit themselves for audit,” Zimcodd report read.

Former Finance minister Tendai Biti, who is also former chairperson of the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee said the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) was the most corrupt among State entities.

“The OPC is an errant ministry, an errant vote, and so you can’t expect a mosquito to cure malaria, it doesn’t happen. There is no political will. Remember they are the perpetrators so they cannot have the political will to extinguish corruption.  We need to impose a penalty on non-compliance,” Biti said.

Efforts to get a comment from presidential spokesperson George Charamba were fruitless yesterday as his phone was not being answered.

Biti said some countries had laws that punish non-compliance with government audit reports and if a government entity is non-compliant, no disbursements should be made to it.

“The problem is if you read all of those AG reports, the culprit is actually the Ministry of Finance. The Ministry of Finance is a regulatory authority, a gatekeeper, but we have a situation where the gatekeeper is the gatecrasher, and so it is a dog’s breakfast,” Biti added.

Auditor-General Mildred Chiri said her office did not have the mandate to force State entities to submit their reports for audit.

“We do not have that mandate; we wait for them to submit. What we can do is to recommend, and the authorities above them should enforce and give them guidance or penalties,” Chiri said.

Audit expert Rodney Ndamba said Chiri had no authority to implement changes.

“She will assess what is reported versus records and simply make recommendations. Nowadays there are long form audit reports which give finer details,” Ndamba said.

Zanu PF Youths Threaten Court Against Granting Bail To CCC Members

Ruling Zanu-PF party youths yesterday ran amok at the Mbare Magistrates Court threatening to set ablaze lawyers’ vehicles if three members of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) who were arrested on yet to be established charges were granted bail.

This was after two CCC members Tapiwa Chibaya and Phanex Zikimvu were arrested on Saturday after they went to court in solidarity with Last Chinodya, a CCC member arrested last Friday for allegedly threatening to kill a Zanu-PF member.

Bail ruling in Chinodya’s case of threatening violence will be heard today.

Through their lawyer, advocate Wilbert Mandinde of the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum, Chibaya and Zikimvu deferred bail application citing failure to be served with court papers.

Chinodya was arrested last Friday at his workplace after Tonderai Rusere, a Zanu-PF youth made a police report alleging that he had threatened to kill him if he continued to campaign for the ruling party in Mbare.

Chinodya however, claims that the allegations are false and designed to criminalise him and other CCC leadership ahead of the 2023 polls.

While making his submissions, the trio’s lawyer Mandinde said his clients chose to apply for bail through the High Court.

“My clients have elected that they will not apply for bail now because they have not been served with court papers,”Mandinde said.

Chibaya and Zikimvu were remanded to October 17 by Mbare magistrate Nyasha Vhitironi.

But during court proceedings yesterday, Zanu-PF supporters numbering over 300 stormed court premises, toyi-toying, and threaten to set ablaze the trio’s lawyers if they were granted bail.

Some of the Zanu-PF members also threatened Mandinde for representing the trio. The situation was so tense that riot police had to be called in.

Makandiwa Torches Social Media Storm Over Corruption Remarks

United Family International Church (UFIC) leader Emmanuel Makandiwa has torched a storm after one of his sermons went viral on social media, in which he appeared to “sanitise” corruption.

In the clip, the UFIC leader said: “Some of you don’t understand. Some of you hear what has not been said. It’s like you have me saying there is no corruption happening. That’s what you would have heard. Why do you misinterpret. Corruption has different levels.

“There is a certain level where there will be US$10 billion for road construction, of which US$5 billion is swindled and US$5 billion is used for the construction. That corruption is different from other corruption because all of the US$10 billion could be squandered.”

Zimbabweans quickly reacted to the sermon saying Makandiwa was seemingly siding with corrupt government officials. Others described him as a fake prophet.

Exiled former Cabinet minister Jonathan Moyo tweeted: “Not here. Papa don’t be a rolling stone. The 50/50 quota is for gender equality, not for corruption parity.”

Another Twitter user, Joseph Samanyara said: “On this one, he totally lost it! Corruption should never be justified because that money is being paid by taxpayers and must fully benefit the taxpayers.”

“Corruption is corruption, it must not be classified. We can’t sanitise the looting of US$5 billion because the other US$5 billion was reportedly used for the intended purpose,” Maguwu said.

Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development programmes manager John Maketo said: “We stand against all forms of corruption.”

Centre for Natural Resource Governance director Farai Maguwu said if government did not sincerely deal with corruption affecting Zimbabwe, the country would remain poor.

Meanwhile, in his sermon, Makandiwa also said: “Zimbabwe is rising bit by bit, whether Satan likes it or not. We are walking in prophetic steps. From morning until midnight, we are seeing those in power doing what was revealed to us, but God will support until you get embarrassed. If you were a prophet like me, you would do the same.”

Maguwu, however, said it has now become very difficult to distinguish between Makandiwa the preacher and Makandiwa the politician.

“These are inflammatory political statements which have nothing to do with the gospel of Jesus Christ. People must be encouraged to create industries and not take what does not belong to them. That is theft and is against the teaching of scriptures,” Maguwu added.

US$ Allowance For Education Sector Chefs Divide Civil Servants

By A Correspondent-Teachers are reportedly divided over reports that the government is giving senior civil servants in the education sector are being given travel and subsistence allowances pegged in United States dollars (US$).

The senior officials are getting per diems of up to US$125 per day, which is paid in local currency for attending meetings, chairing disciplinary meetings and other events in the education ministry, NewsDay reported.

Teachers who spoke to NewsDay accused the government of offering perks to the senior education officers to encourage them to intimidate and frustrate efforts to push the government to restore pre-October 2018 salaries that were around US$540.

Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe president Obert Masaraure claimed:

A layer of elite civil servants is being created to strengthen ‘supervision’ of the majority of civil servantsThat layer is enjoying special perks and is being deployed to scuttle any collective job actions. Government has divided teachers through the introduction of a layer of teachers who are promised to enjoy economic privileges, professional exceptionalism and social protection. The group named Teachers for ED is being used as a vehicle to bastardise trade unionism.

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general Raymond Majongwe said:

Senior officials in the Education ministry get per diems on several occasions during the course of the month while teachers are in class, working.

Majongwe added that the senior teachers were getting USDs and have, as a result, been pocketing way more than what teachers are earning, which is somewhat demoralising teachers in class.

Education ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said there was nothing amiss in giving allowances to senior members because it was the norm across all other government departments, as well as in the private sector.

ZimStat Releases Statistics That Could Force Youths To Vote Zanu PF Out Of Power In 2023

The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat) has released results of last year’s national census which could get youths angry and vote the ruling Zanu PF out of power.

According to the ZimStat 2022 second quarter labour force survey about half of Zimbabwean youths are loafing, laying bare the job crisis facing the country.

Results of the ZimStat survey that was released yesterday show that the national proportion of youths aged between 15 and 34 years who were not in employment, education or training (NEET) was estimated at 50%, while the proportion of those aged between 15 and 24 in the same category stood at 49%.

The national unemployment rate for youth between 15 and 34 years was 29%, while the youth aged between 15 and 24 had a national unemployment rate of 37%, according to the survey.

Presenting the results, ZimStat acting manager (labour, market, and statistics department) Tidings Matangira said most of the youth who were in NEET were doing nothing.

The ZimStat report shows that an estimated 3,25 million people are employed compared to 3,27 million in the first quarter.

“Around 3,3 million of the working age population was currently employed. The national employment to population ratio stood at 35%,” the ZimStat report partly read.

“Harare had the highest proportion of the employed population at around 26% followed by Mashonaland West at 13%. Matabeleland North with 2% had the least proportion. 29% of the employed population was in the formal sector while 45% was in the informal sector. Of those in employment 21% and 5% were in the agricultural and household sectors, respectively. Eighty-eight percent of the employed population was informally employed. Among those employed in the non-agricultural sectors, 85% were informally employed.”

The ZimStat report comes as the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) says the southern African country has a mere 180 000 formal jobs, yet its population has doubled since independence in 1980.

“One in 15 people has a formal job compared to one in six in 1980,” ZNCC chief executive officer Christopher Mugaga said recently.

According the latest ZimStat report, the majority of the workers (26%) are employed under the wholesale trade, retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles industry followed by the agricultural, forestry and fishing sectors with 21%.

ZimStat also says 29% of persons in the potential labour force category stopped looking for jobs because they have been looking for employment for a very long time without success.

ZimStat director-general Taguma Mahonde said the decline in the number of employed people in the second quarter was a result of the changes in the farming season which resulted in the economy shifting from the agricultural sector.

“Unemployment rate using the strict definition was estimated at 20% compared to 19,3% in quarter one,” Mahonde said. “Expanded unemployment rate was estimated at 48% compared to 47,2% in quarter one. Share of formal (non-agriculture) sector employment was estimated at 29% compared to 28% in quarter one. Share of employment in the informal (non-agriculture) sector was estimated at 45% for both second and first quarters. Share of employment in the household sector was estimated at 6% compared to 4% in quarter one. Share of employment in the agricultural sector was estimated at 21% compared to 24% in the first quarter.”

International Labour Organisation (ILO) specialist on informal sector Annamarie Kiaga bemoaned the low number of women employed in the formal sector.

“It is worrisome that fewer women of the working age are actually employed or participating in the labour markets,” Kiaga said.

“The gender gap matters because ILO believes that freedom of work by choice and condition of dignity, safety and fairness is integral to human welfare. Guaranteeing women the right to have access to work is important.

“The gender gap in Zimbabwe is of concern because in 2016, the ILO conducted a study worldwide on the attitude or perception of both women and men, 81% of women indicated preference to access to paid work. So if that was in 2016 and six years on, still the employment ratio of women against men is still this low it becomes worrisome.”

High Court Rips Into Magistrate Taruvinga Over Mako Conviction

By A Correspondent| Two High Court Judges have berated Harare Magistrate Judith Taruvinga for committing an enormous blunder when she convicted and sentenced Makomborero Haruzivishe, a pro-democracy campaigner, to serve jail time in 2021 on baseless charges of inciting public violence and resisting arrest by some Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers.

Haruzivishe was convicted on Wednesday 31 March 2021 by Magistrate Taruvinga on charges of inciting public violence and resisting arrest by law enforcement agents, who on Tuesday 6 April 2021 sentenced him to serve 36 months in jail. However, 16 months of his sentence were suspended on condition that he does not commit the same offence and
gets convicted.

He had been arrested by ZRP officers on 5 February 2020 and charged with inciting public violence and resisting arrest by law enforcement agents. During trial, prosecutors alleged that Haruzivishe incited some vendors to commit public violence by whistling to them when some ZRP officers were on an operation to round up informal traders in Harare’s central business district. Haruzivishe, the prosecutors charged, also resisted arrest by some police officers who wanted to apprehend him.

On the first count of incitement as defined in section 187 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Magistrate Taruvinga sentenced Haruzivishe to serve 24 months in prison of which 10 months were suspended for a period of five years.

On the second count of resisting a peace officer as defined in section 176 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, the pro-democracy campaigner was sentenced to serve 12 months of which six months were suspended for a period of five years.

Haruzivishe, who was represented by Kossam Ncube and Obey Shava of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, then appealed against both conviction and sentence in 2021, where he argued that Magistrate Taruvinga had grossly erred and misdirected herself in convicting him and hence the guilty verdict handed down by the judicial officer should be set aside.

After presiding over hearing of Haruzivishe’s appeal, Justice Benjamin Chikowero and Justice Happias Zhou on 22 September 2022 quashed and set aside the pro-democracy campaigner’s conviction and sentence by Magistrate Taruvinga after finding him not guilty on both counts and consequently acquitted him.

Justice Chikowero and Zhou had no kind words for Magistrate Taruvinga whom they said had “fundamentally misdirected” herself in convicting imprisoning Haruzivishe.

The two judges concluded that Magistrate Taruvinga’s ruling was not “thorough” and that she had based her verdict on an “incorrect appreciation of evidence” adduced during Haruzivishe’s trial and also on patently “wrong facts”.

Dont Fear, Come Bury Your Brother, Govt Tells Mapfumo

Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana says exiled Chimurenga music legend Thomas ‘Mukanya’ Mapfumo is free to return home to bury his late brother, Lancelot who died recently in the USA.

This is after the US based protest music chanter said weekend he feared for his life if he returned home for the funeral.

Lancelot, a percussionist, was one of the founding members of Mapfumo’s Blacks Unlimited, a music outfit the veteran musician has fronted for many years.

Mapfumo, an ardent critic of the Emmerson Mnangagwa led Zanu-PF administration and the predecessor regime once headed by now late President Robert Mugabe, told the media weekend he was not going to make the long trip back home to bury his brother.

“Lancelot was my brother, workmate and friend. I and the band have lost someone we worked with throughout our lives. It won’t be possible to fill his gap,” Mapfumo said.

“Lancelot will be buried in Zimbabwe, his homeland. We are making arrangements to bring his body from here.

“Unfortunately, I won’t make the trip to Zimbabwe because of political reasons, as you know I am not a favourite of the government.

“I fear for my life and safety if I come to Zimbabwe.”

Responding to Mapfumo Monday, Mangwana said the musician had nothing to fear.

“We wish to express our sincere condolences to Mr Thomas Mapfumo over the sad loss of his younger brother, Lancelot (MHSRIP).

“We wish to advise Mr Mapfumo that he has nothing to fear in Zimbabwe. The security of his person is as assured as the rest of us,” Mangwana said.

Mapfumo, a strong critic of citizen oppression and corruption, has unsettled the country’s rulers through often candid criticism of state excesses and open calls for the overthrow of the Mnangagwa led administration through mass action.

He has openly landed his support for opposition CCC leader Nelson Chamisa and his party.

Mapfumo was last home in April 2018 where he staged some home coming gigs and also took time to lay wreaths on the tombs of his late mother and those of relatives who died during his long absence.

His mother died in 2008 with the outspoken musician failing to attend her funeral, burial or memorial service.

Mapfumo relocated to the United States of America at the turn of the millennium.

His 2018 gigs saw him break a 14-year hiatus after his last performances in front of a home crowd were back in 2004.

Man Bashes Children Over Sadza

CAF Withdraws Guinea Right To Host AFCON

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reopened the bids for the hosting of 2025 Afcon after stripping Guinea of the rights.

The rights withdrawal followed a meeting on Friday in Conakry between Guinea’s interim president, Col. Mamady Doumbouya, and CAF President Patrice Motsepe.

Motsepe cited the infrastructure and facilities in Guinea as not being ready to host a world-class Afcon competition.

The CAF boss, who was accompanied by Caf General Secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba said as quoted by CAF website: “I visited Guinea today [Friday] out of respect to the people of Guinea to discuss CAF’s willingness to advise and work together with the football stakeholders to construct and build football infrastructure and facilities in this country.

“This will enable Guinea to bid with other competing Nations for the African Nations Championships (CHAN) which will take place after the Chan to be hosted by Algeria in 2023, in the light of the decision by CAF not to proceed with the 2025 Afcon in Guinea.”

Following an Executive Committee meeting on Saturday, CAF has resolved to re-open the bid.

“The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) Executive Committee (“EXCO”) met on Saturday 1 October 2022 in Algiers, Algeria and announced the re-opening of bids for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations 2025,” a statement by the football body read.

It is not the first time a country has been stopped from hosting Afcon.

Cameroon were stripped of the right to host the 2019 tournament because they weren’t considered ready but they were awarded the 2021 tournament – which took place earlier this year because of delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

City Thrash Red Devils

Former Manchester United skipper Roy Keane has branded the club’s 6-3 derby defeat by Manchester City as “hugely embarrassing”.

Hat-tricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden saw the reigning Premier League champions, who led 4-0 at the break, cruise to victory at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon and prompted a withering assessment from the Irishman.

Keane told Sky Sports: “Man City were magnificent. Watching Man City, it is a pleasure. Watching them live, they are one of the best teams I’ve ever seen.

“But Man United, [it’s] a huge setback for them. We were giving them a little bit of praise over the last few weeks, but this is a huge step back.

“Four-nil down at half-time – they were 4-0 down at Brentford – and the performance in the second half, it’s no good, even as consolation. They scored a few goals – the game’s over.- SkySports

Can Luke Malaba Be Trusted With Finding Tapiwa Makore’s Missing Skull?

By A Correspondent | The Tapiwa Makore missing skull trial which Chief Justice Luke Malaba took over to finalise in July has dragged on into October.

Justice Malaba in May ordered the four Tafadzwa Shamba, uncles Tapiwa Makore senior, Thanks Makore, and Ms Maud Hunidzarira, to appear before him on the 27th June 2022.

The trial was back then scheduled to last 5 days.

Tapiwa’s decapitated body was buried seven months later, with the head missing, following the intervention of traditional healers.

The suspects Tafadzwa Shamba, Tapiwa Makore Senior, Maud Hunidzarira and Thanks Makore denied the allegations when they appeared before Justice Munamato Mutevedzi.

The prime suspect Shamba, who was represented by Tinashe Mavhaire and Mutsa Chivandire from Chivandire, Mavhaire and Zinto Law Chambers told the court that he admitted to the allegations under duress after being assaulted by the investigating officers.

Shamba, who was the gardener of the deceased’s father and was linked to the offence by his blood-soaked pair of trousers, denied the link saying the blood spots that were found on his pair of trouser were from a chicken he had slaughtered at Makore Snr’s homestead.

He also stated that the blood stains found on his vest were menstrual blood left by his friend’s girlfriend.

Shamba also denied that he sold human remains to one Joiner Tangarire saying he had regularly sold him beef for over a year.

“Shamba was heavily assaulted by police from CID Murehwa using iron bars, shamboks, sticks and was tied with rope for more than five hours to make admissions to this offence. He will state that he was forced to admit the offence. All indications are denied as they are done under a prolonged physical assault and duress by the police officers,” Shamba’s lawyers submited.

“Shamba was advised that the President had declared that he should be killed and was taken to Marondera for burial. He was told by the police to implicate others as co-pepetrators. He was told what to say by the police on camera.”

Tapiwa’s mother Linda Munyori narrated how she sent her child to the garden after she prepared food for him until the time he disappeared.

The second witness Julia Kamunda who had told the police that her son was asked by Shamba to call the deceased from the garden and denied the statement saying she was forced to lie.

Kamunda had told the police that her son James Makore was sent by Shamba to collect the now deceased from the garden.

“I then advised James Makore not to tell anyone about the issue. I even threatened to assault him if ever he tells anyone… I went to the garden my son James Makore told me that he had been given US$5 and a green T-shirt by Tapiwa Makore (Senior) for thanking him for assisting Tafadzwa Shamba to call the nov deceased,” Kamunda told the police at the time.

But in court she denied all her statements saying she was assaulted by the police together with her husband who is not a witness in the matter.

The other three also denied the offence saying they were assaulted by the police to give statements that were told by the police.

The trial continues – Additional reporting, Newsday

Brutal Mnangagwa Planning To Keep Sikhala In Jail Until 2023

Tinashe Sambiri|Bishop Ancelimo Magaya has challenged the Zanu PF leader Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa to release jailed political activists.

According to Bishop Magaya, Mnangagwa wants to keep Sikhala in prison until 2023- after elections.

Bishop Magaya further argues Mr Mnangagwa is not at all ready for free and fair elections.

See statement below:

There is no question about the fact of President Mnangagwa’ unpreparedness for free, fair and credible elections for 2023.

His grip on the judiciary is scary. The courts that are supposed to be honorable are making very political verdicts on behalf of the state. The blatant miscarriages of justice are revulsive not only to the public but before God (Isaiah 1: 21 & 23).

The pastors and congregants that were arrested because they were praying for their country on June 10 are still on remand thou out of custody. Sikala and team are wallowing in prison. Tsitsi Dangarembwa and Julie Barnes have unjustly been convicted. My sensing is that they want to keep Sikala and team in jail till elections. They should prove this thinking wrong and release them. This continued harassment are deliberately schemed to give warnings to anyone who would like to exercise their constitutional rights.

The increasing closure of civic space is unprecedented in Zimbabwe and reminisces Rhodesian era where smith would label our freedom fighters ”terrorists” conveniently so, to justify his repressions.

It is very saddening that whilst the aforementioned is self evident both the general citizenry and the church in particular seem to undermine the power that is reposed in them.

The save Zimbabwe campaign: a church led initiative almost broke the spin of Mugabe regime as we organized series of protests and prayer meetings/activities whose climax was the 11th of March 2007. Resulting from these initiatives was an emergence of AU meeting in Tanzania which led to elections whose outcome we all know. The ZCBC pastoral letter of August 2020 was both a bomb and a galvanizing factor.

The church and the citizenry were ready for action and then there was a sudden lull resulting from a backlash. The spontaneity with which the citizens gathered at the court in solidarity with pastor Evan in July of 2016 should never be separated from his initial release.

To the church, a reading of scriptures clearly shows that with the advent of the Holy Spirit in Acts chapter 2, there was an increase of impact in the ministry of the apostles in the public space. Note also Micah 3:8 “ The spirit of the Lord is upon me, he has annointed me to rebuke Jacob of his sin and Israel his iniquity “.

The question of the application of theology to public space such as economic and politics is pictured with abundance in scriptures. Finally to the citizenry, we should glean lessons from the South Africans who gathered at the court in numbers in solidarity with the EFF members. We should all relentlessly demand the Zimbabwe we want and it will be delivered. God save Zimbabwe.

Let it be known that Ed together with his rogue judiciary stand guilty before the heavens for convicting the innocent like Tsitsi Dangarembwa and Julie Barnes for exercising their rights, whilst murderers like Sanyatwe and many more are rewarded. This is not the Zimbabwe we want.

Nakamba’s Net Income Rises

Marvelous Nakamba and Jordan Zemura’s net incomes are set to rise after a decision to cut the highest tax rate and national insurance.

According to The Times, the UK government has reduced the highest tax bracket (annual earnings over £150,000) from 45% down to 40.

Nakamba’s earnings are believed to be around £1,690,000 per year after signing a contract with Aston Villa in 2019.

With the latest tax cut, the Zimbabwean midfielder’s annual net income will rise by around £90,000.

Bournemouth’s Zemura is currently among the lowest paid players in the EPL, and his salary is outside the highest tax bracket.

But with talks of a new deal underway, the Warriors international could also benefit from the tax reform should he gets something better.

Top earners like Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo are expected to have a £1.3m rise.

According to one Premier League chief, the tax cuts will attract more foreign stars.

The chief told the publication: “Tax can be an issue when negotiating transfers, as players want to know their net income, so I’m sure the tax cut will make the Premier League more attractive.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Man Arrested, Detained For Refusing To Join Mahwindi For ED

MASVINGO – A Gutu Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activist Charles Zvenyika (49) who resisted a move by a Zanu PF group calling itself Mahwindi4ED’s bid to force every tout at the rank to put on ruling party regalia has been denied bail.

Zvenyika allegedly snatched one of the Zanu PF tout, Joseph Mutema (35)’s mobile phone during running battles as the latter used the phone to take videos of him. He is also accused of grabbing Mutema’s party card.

Mutema is said to be one of the leading figures of the Mahwindi4ED group. He was then arrested and charged for stealing a cellphone and resisting Police arrest.

Zvenyika’s lawyer Martin Mureri of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) confirmed the development to The Mirror. Mureri said Zvenyika applied for bail at Gutu Magistrates Court as a self-actor before the arrival of his lawyer on Monday and his bid was turned down.

The running battles at Mpandawana happened last Monday as the Mahwindi4ED were also launching their organisation.

Zvenyika of Mpandawana Village under Chief Gutu allegedly stole a Samsung J4 Core with US$50 in the pouch, US$1 Buddie recharge voucher and a Zanu PF membership card from Joseph Mutema (35) before escaping Police custody on the same day.

It is the State case that on the day, Zvenyika had an altercation with a council worker, Richard Manyika outside Mutema’s shop. Mutema tried to refrain the two but failed and he called Manyika’s supervisor to intervene.

Mutema then allegedly put his phone to Manyika’s ear so that he could speak to his supervisor but Zvenyika grabbed the phone and ran away. Mutema then filed a report to Police officers who were patrolling the terminus.

Zvenyika was arrested and he escaped from the officers at the terminus before he was rearrested and taken to Gutu Police Station. He initially appeared in court on Friday.-Masvingo Mirror

Four (4) Zimbabweans Killed In South Africa

By- Another Zimbabwean has died of injuries sustained in an attack by a South African mob in Limpopo province recently.

This takes the number of Zimbabweans killed in the horrific attack to four, after three others died after being burnt by a mob in the Elim area on September 17. They had accused them of stealing solar panels and accessories.
It is also reported that 113 other Zimbabweans were left displaced following violent attacks on migrants by locals in that area.
Zimbabwe’s Consul-General to Johannesburg Mrs Melody Chaurura said they had since dispatched a team on the ground.
She said repatriation processes for the deceased were underway.
“We have dispatched a team to Elim following reports of the burning to death of three Zimbabwean nationals in Tshavani village, in Elim, Limpopo province,” she said.
“The incident took place on 17 September 2022. They have established that indeed three Zimbabwean nationals were burnt to death on 17 September 2022 following accusations of theft of solar panels and electric cables.
“Two of the deceased Zimbabweans were positively identified by their biological relatives as Johan Munago and Amon Munago from Chivi area in Zimbabwe. One of the three bodies is yet to be positively identified.”
Mrs Chaurura identified the fourth victim as Tops Mutanho also from Chivi, who succumbed to injuries sustained after the mob attack.
He was assaulted after being allegedly found in possession of stolen copper cables.
Mrs Chaurura said dockets relating to the cases were opened at Waterval Police Station.
But no reports on the arrest of suspects have been received.
Added Mrs Chaurura: “The Mission further established details of 113 Zimbabweans who had been affected by the community violence.
“However, this number was not exhaustive because there were reports of several other people who had been displaced, but kept themselves in hiding for fear of further violence and detection by law enforcement agents.”
Mrs Chaurura said the consulate team succeeded in engaging local authorities and relevant stakeholders with a view to ensure that peace was restored in the community.
She said there were also consultations on the provision of temporary shelter for the displaced families.
In addition, the repatriation documents were issued to those whose resolution was to return to Zimbabwe.
“For this category, the Mission extended an offer for government funded repatriation and family reunification assistance,” said Mrs Chaurura.
“The Consulate stands ready to continue working closely with local authorities to ensure the protection of Zimbabwe nationals in various communities.”
Mrs Chaurura said consultations were still underway using the established platforms of dialogue, with a view to develop strategies that will see an end to such heinous acts.
“The ultimate objective is to ensure peaceful co-existence among communities,” she said.
Mrs Chaurura encouraged Zimbabweans in South Africa to establish contact with the Embassy and the two Consulates in times of distress in order to enable them to knowledgeably engage the host government authorities for necessary support.
Zimbabweans in South Africa were also called upon to uphold the good image of the country by desisting from engaging criminal activities.
“We call upon our compatriots to commit themselves to hard work, bearing in mind that we are the custodians of brand Zimbabwe in our individual capacities,” said Mrs Chaurura.
“It is, therefore, imperative for us all to espouse the highest standards of integrity in our daily routines.” Herald

Zambia Drops VISA Requirements

By- The Zambian government has removed visa requirements for the European Union, China, and the United States of America to boost the country’s tourism sector.

According to NewZimbabwe, the southern African nation is currently working towards growing the tourism sector by doubling its earnings.

In an update on the weekend, the Zambia Tourism Authority (ZTA) announced that there would be no VISA requirements for the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, Norway, Australia, China, South Korea, Gulf Estates and the European Union.

In 2019, Zambia approved its Tourism Master Plan 2018 to 2038, a 20-year practical development strategy to enhance the economic contribution of the tourism sector to the southern African nation’s economy. The country’s tourism sector market information said:

Currently the fastest-growing economic sector in the country – contributing US$1,8bn last year. The vision is for Zambia to rank among the most-visited holiday destinations in Africa.

The country’s tourism sector has been growing since 2017 when the country recorded one-million tourist arrivals.

In a bid to keep the momentum, the government is working on providing an investor-friendly environment and improving accessibility to the country.

This has included the re-introduction of a national carrier and visa reforms.

Nick Aslin, founder and director of Zambian Ground Handlers says a brand-new building in Livingstone and Lusaka is due to open at year-end.

War Of Words Over ZEPs

By- The South African government has ’ dismissed reports saying he extended the Zimbabwean Exemption Permits (ZEPs) to June 2023 as a strategy to help the ruling Zanu PF rig elections scheduled for next year.

SA home affairs minister Aaron Motsoaledi has

Motsoaledi extended ZEPs in late August, arguing that the department had received few applications by Zimbabwean nationals for ordinary visas at that time.

Motsoaledi had, throughout the year, vowed not to renew the expiring ZEPs, meaning its holders would have to return home at the end of 2022.

Civil society organisation, the Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF), which had launched a legal challenge against the planned cancellation, said it would continue with the court fight. It added;

There is now some speculation that the reason for this most recent six-month extension is that it is a sop to Zimbabwe’s ruling party, Zanu PF: delaying the return of those who fled its murderous policies until after the next elections, scheduled for early 2023, means they cannot vote against Zanu.

In response, Minister Motsoaledi dismissed the suggestion as a “ridiculous” and “bizarre conspiracy theory”. He said in a statement:

… if HSF’s worry is the outcome of elections in Zimbabwe, then in that event, the Minister publicly challenges HSF to use its massive resources to mobilise all the Zimbabwean nationals in South Africa go and participate in the 2023 elections.

In this manner the HSF will be putting their money where their mouth is. After all, it is a democratic obligation of a citizen of any country to vote in any elections in order to influence the direction that their country takes.

South Africa’s ruling ANC party has faced criticism for not being tougher with authorities in Harare who face allegations of human rights abuses, electoral fraud and crackdowns against the opposition.

Cancellation of the ZEP would affect some 178 000 holders.

The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) recently estimated that 700 000 Zimbabweans were based in South Africa.

Tenax edged Yadah 1-0 in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match played at the National Sports Stadium today, a result which boosts their chances of surviving relegation.

This was their second victory on the bounce after they edged struggling Harare City 1-0 in Mutare last week.

Tenax are now four points above the drop zone, with 28 points from 28 matches.

The battle for survival continues tomorrow when Harare City travel to Rusape to face Black Rhinos at Vengere while bottom-placed WhaWha host Bulawayo Chiefs at Ascot.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Mukanya Fails To Attend Brother’s Burial Due To Political Presecution

Chaos At Bosso, FC Platinum Tie

Yesterday’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League clash between Highlanders and FC Platimum had the ingredients for a thriller.

The most in-form teams in the league were meeting at a venue which always attracts good crowds despite the well-documented low attendance at PSL matches.

Days before the clash, Bosso coach Baltermar Brito had a special plea to the club’s supporters.

The Portuguese mentor, who has transformed Bosso since his arrival in June and earned the respect and admiration of the ever-demanding Amahlolanyama faithful, implored supporters to be on their best behaviour when they face Norman Mapeza’s charges.

“We expect our stadium to be packed with the good behaviour of the supporters. It doesn’t make sense for the club to be getting fines because of bad behaviour from our fans. So, we ask the supporters to come in large numbers and please behave well for the game to finish,” Brito said.

But his words, just like those of the club leadership on countless occasions, fell on deaf ears.

A section of Bosso fans invaded the Mpilo end housing FC Platinum supporters and bullied the latter away from the stand.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Hwange, who are under the guidance of former Bulawayo City coach Try Ncube, won 27 of their 33 matches.
