Mwonzora Clarifies ”Joining POLAD” Reports

Yesterday, (Friday), the MDC President Douglas Mwonzora was invited to attend a POLAD Meeting not joined POLAD so that he presents our submissions on the proposed amendments we expect to be made into POLAD so that it becomes inclusive.

Our proposal is that it must include a Platform of Political Parties in Parliament just like COPAC.

Once it includes Political parties in Parliament it now means the Church, Traditional, leaders and all CSOs will be included because there will be thematic committees that include these.

At Present the constitutive document of POLAD is exclusive only to those ppl who participated in 2018 Presidential Elections and we have refused to join it under the current state.

Last year the Party’s National Council council resolved that we can only join POLAD on condition that it’s structure has been changed to includes a Platform Political Parties in Parliament and this means the constitutive document of POLAD must be amended.

One last thing we all have to know is that Zanu PF has insisted that Dialogue must take place inside POLAD and we have also insisted that Dialogue must be inclusive and should involve Parliament.

So in any negotiation its about give and take. You can not win all.
As for now we have not joined POLAD since its members are still consulting and deliberating on our proposals and as soon as they are through they will get in touch with us.

Zanu PF Activist Unpeturbed By Attack, Vows To Fight Mnangagwa Head On

HARARE – Zanu PF activist Sybeth Musengezi has vowed the weekend arson attack that damaged his home and also destroyed property will not deter him from seeking justice in his court challenge against President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s legitimacy.

Musengezi and his family escaped what he believes was an arson attack by suspected state agents at his Sandton home in Harare Saturday.

Neighbours pitched in to help the defiant activist put out the inferno, which had destroyed property worth US$ 8 500, excluding the damage on the house.

A Toyota Vitz, a 5000-litre water tank, two beds, blankets, electrical appliances, and clothes were among the items destroyed in the fire.

Musengezi claimed the incident was staged to intimidate him against challenging Mnangagwa’s legitimacy as Zanu PF leader.

The activist says he will not dump his challenge despite signs of risks against his life.

“This attack has actually strengthened my resolve to fight on and I now believe I have a strong case; otherwise I would not have been facing these attacks if it was a simple matter.

“My family is still traumatised. Imagine kids watching as thugs attempt to burn them alive. They are extremely terrified.

“Right now, we are working on long-term security measures to ensure the family’s safety,” he said.

In his court challenge, Musengezi claims Mnangagwa was improperly elevated to becoming Zanu PF first secretary in violation of the ruling party’s constitution, following the shock military assisted coup against late former President Robert Mugabe November 2017.

Since November last year, Musengezi says his civil, structural engineering, and construction businesses have faced numerous threats by suspected state agents targeting him and his clients.

“Threats have always been there since November last year. Death threats, threats of being arrested or beaten up.

“I have had my clients being threatened not to renew my contracts or pay me my dues.

“I’ve taken some of the cases to court, but the clients are under strict orders not to pay me a single cent,” said Musengezi.

Only a few brave party activists, Musengezi says, support his bold decision to challenge Mnangagwa’s legitimacy, while the majority of them no longer want to be associated with him for fear of being victimized.

25-Year Old Harare Man Nabbed While Selling A Firearm

A 25-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday in Harare Central Business District (CBD) after he was found selling a firearm.

A police report says the police got a tip-off that Tanaka Rujuwa was in possession of a gun.

“On 05/10/22, Police in Harare swiftly reacted to a tip-off and arrested Tanaka Rujuwa (25) at Markert Square Bus Terminus for possession of an unregistered Plainsman 175 Pistol and a Mossberg round. The suspect was arrested while selling the firearm for US$1 500,” the police said.

The arrest comes a week after the expiry of the Presidential Amnesty on Voluntary Surrender of Firearms and compliance with the police verification exercise.

545 firearms were surrendered as of 29 September 2022 under the amnesty.

Amnesty was announced against the backdrop of an increase in crimes such as armed robberies and other forms of crimes of passion.

Illegal possession of firearms is a violation of section 4(4)(b) of the Firearms Act and may attract a jail sentence of about 24 months, depending on the circumstances.

Zimbabweans Have Never Been Silent Accomplices Of Their Own Oppression

Zimbabweans have never been silent accomplices of their oppression with citizens expressing their grievances through cultural artefacts, a South Africa based academic has said.

Speaking after receiving a prize for his book, Cultural Texts of Resistance in Zimbabwe, Professor Rodwell Makombe described the country’s struggle against oppression as ‘discursive’ whilst emphasising that the masses had embedded resistance in their everyday activities.

Makombe, a lecturer at the University of the Free State, said contrary to the widespread assumptions that Zimbabweans were docile and accomplices to Zanu-PF oppressive rule, his book questioned this notion whilst providing a glimpse into the forms of resistance that continue to exist in the country.

“I wanted to show that Zimbabweans have never been silent accomplices of their oppression. I see oppression not only as physical, but also as discursive,” said Makombe.

“When one looks at the Zimbabwean Netscape since 2000, it has been awash with resistance, opposition, frustration, anger, disappointment, and cynicism. To understand resistance, we have to look at the things that people do and imply every day.

“In other words, Zimbabwean cultural artefacts such as music, whether chimurenga, sungura or gospel, are in many ways the music of resistance against the poverty, family disintegration, hunger, death, and political bigotry that have proliferated in the context of the economic crisis”, he said.

According to Makombe, resistance to tyranny and dictatorship in a constantly growing oppressive society manifests beyond physical protests and riots but through everyday cultural expressions.

“The same can be said about cartoons, memes, and social media posts of the post-2000 period. They all articulate a general sense of disgruntlement and disappointment with the political situation. One point the book makes is that resistance should not only be restricted to offline activities, but it should also include digital resistance,” he said.

Makumbe scooped the 2021 University of Free State (UFS) Book Prize for distinguished scholarship which recognises outstanding research-based publications by academics who produce original books of an international standard.

The book was published by the American publisher Rowman and Littlefield in October 2021 and looks at discursive resistance which is expressed through cultural art forms such as songs, memes, cartoons, and jokes that reflect on and contest hegemonic narratives promoted by the ZANU-PF in Zimbabwe.

“This is my first book, and when I saw the application call, I said to myself, ‘give it a try’. I am currently working on a monograph on the post-coloniality of everyday life in post-Mugabe Zimbabwe, with a specific focus on social media humour and satire. The book should be ready for publication sometime in 2023,” said Makombe.

Makombe, is an Associate Professor in the Department of English on the Qwaqwa Campus, University of the Free State.

Election Watchdogs Demand Voters Roll

Election watchdogs have expressed concern over plans by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) to go ahead with the delimitation exercise without availing the voters roll.

Zec yesterday released its delimitation roadmap showing that the exercise will be completed by December ahead of the 2023 elections.

Election Resource Centre programmes manager Solomon Bobosibunu said it was worrying that the voters roll had not been made public ahead of the critical exercise  of redrawing electoral boundaries.

“In as far as voter education is concerned we are still worried that Zec has not made the voters roll public as the requirement of the law. We are not asking this out of the blue, it’s as per the provisions of the Electoral Act,” Bobosibunu said.

Zimbabwe Election Support Network acting executive director Ellen Dingani said: “By way of update it’s good, but we also want a two-way process whereby the commission engages civil society and political parties to explain some of the issues it mentioned. “

Zimbabwe Elections Advocacy Trust director Ignatius Sadziwa urged Zec to be transparent when conducting the delimitation exercise.

“The exercise needs to be painstakingly executed. However, the commission must improve on consultations so that the process passes credibility and legitimacy tests,” Sadziwa said.

Zec chief elections officer Utoile Silaigwana referred NewsDay to the commission’s spokesperson, Jasper Mangwana, who was not picking calls.

In the roadmap, Zec said it would use provincial and district maps with topological features such as mountains, rivers, roads, communication lines, settlements and different types of land use to demarcate constituency boundaries.

Vic Falls Residents Chase Town Clerk Out Of Office For Abuse Of Office

Residents Association of Victoria Falls on Tuesday frogmarched Town Clerk, Ronnie Dube, out of his office after he was suspended for alleged abuse of office.

The association mobilised residents to physically remove Dube from his Council office following his suspension by the Mayor.

“Today, we stormed Council premises and locked Ronnie Dube’s office and put a key blocker.

“Dube is under investigation by ZACC for corruption and illegal Council deals.

“After we left, some Council security personnel tried to remove the key blocker, but failed.

“It seems Ronnie wants to hide all evidence, but the police have warned that any security guard who removes the key blocker will be arrested,” said a source.

In the suspension letter, Dube is accused of five counts of alleged incompetence.

“On May 26, you wrote a letter to Jackberry Investment instructing them to make a payment towards one-month rentals into City Council Account number 4572-033912-202 held at ZB Bank to the tune of ZW$8 251 522.65.

“There is no Council resolution to allocate the brewery to the said investor.

“The purported lease being drawn in the same letter is illegal. You acted ultra vires your express and/or implied terms and conditions of service.

“On February 25, you unilaterally allocated the Council dumpsite to Greenline Africa, in partnership with Mosi oa Tunya Waste and Landfill (Pvt) Ltd without a Council resolution.

“In your letter dated February 25, you stated that management had no authority to lease out the said dumpsite/landfill site or sewerage pond area.

“You acted outside the scope of your mandate and powers by usurping Council powers.”

Added the letter:

“On August 4, as the Town Clerk of the City of Victoria Falls, you caused the transfer of US$84 000 from a Council account.

“There was no cause for this transfer.

“Council neither authorised such nor does it have an agreement with you authorising the transfer of the said money.

“This is theft of trust property.

“In June, 2022, you misrepresented to Council a proposal arising from the tender to sell stand number 8300. The purpose of selling land, through the tender system is to get the competitive maximum value available on the open market.

“You misled Council to award the tender to Zambezi Properties, whose bid of US$4.2 million was lower than the highest bid of US$5.7 million.

“You failed to discharge your duties diligently and effectively in line with the express or implied conditions of your contract of employment.

“In your capacity as Town Clerk, you have failed to solve perennial service delivery challenges, namely water shortages.”

Prison Officer Kills Self Over Misunderstanding With Wife

A PRISON officer stationed at Little Kraal Farm in Nyazura pumped three bullets into his head with a service rifle and died instantly following a wrangle with his wife over his alleged affair with a Form Three student.

Kenneth Mawonga (38) was found in a pool of blood by his workmates who had rushed to the scene after hearing gunshots.

Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services’ public relations officer for Manicaland, Chief Correctional Officer Liberty Mhlanga confirmed the incident.

He, however, could not divulge more details, saying investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the suicide.

“We confirm the regrettable incident, but investigations into the cause of the suicide are in progress,” he said.

However, homicide detectives handling the case revealed that Mawonga had a misunderstanding with his wife over his alleged affair with an under-age school girl.

Following Mawonga’s death, detectives went through his cellphone chats and discovered that he was at loggerheads with his wife over the alleged affair.

Further investigations saw detectives talking to the late Mawonga’s wife, Sharon Paimupindu (31), and she also revealed the couple had spoken about the extra marital affair.

“These are just assumptions of what could have caused the suicide basing on the cellphone conversations. We want to really dig deep into the matter and find out what happened,” said a detective who requested anonymity.

It is alleged that on September 29, Mawonga commenced duty in the morning and was deployed to do perimetre checks around prisoners’ cells.

At around lunch hour, he requested to change guard points with another officer, Tanaka Willard Matsaru, saying he did not want to continue working at the guard point he had been deployed.

Matsaru had been deployed at the Corner Post and was armed with a loaded service pistol.
Matsaru agreed to exchange guard points and handed over his service pistol to Mawonga.

Mawonga took over at the Corner Post until late in the afternoon when gunshots were heard.

An alarm was raised, resulting in all prison officers combing the area to establish what had transpired.

Upon checking the Corner Post guard room, the officers stumbled upon their colleague’s dead body.

A nurse who was summoned to attend the scene confirmed his death.

The matter was reported to the police.

Detectives who attended the scene discovered that Mawonga had wounds on his head, below the chin and on the left nostril.

Spent cartridges were picked from the underside of his chin.

The rifle in question was also recovered.

However, Paimupindu was not readily available for a comment as her mobile phone was not reachable.

Company Boss Caught With Lover In Car

A manager at Grills Feed company which is situated in Kelvin West industrial area in Bulawayo was allegedly battered and stripped naked before he was robbed of his cash and his Honda Fit car after he was caught with his girlfriend in his car.

The incident happened on Friday last week at around 7pm.

Hebert Gorekore (47) stays in Pumula East suburb and on the day in question he visited his lover named Sikhangele Ndlovu in Nkulumane suburb and they sat in his car. While they were in the car two males confronted them and smashed a car window.

“They smashed the driver’s side window with a stone and instructed him to alight from the car as they threatened to kill him. As he opened the driver’s door his girlfriend bolted out of the car and fled leaving him at the mercy of the robbers,” a source said.

They ordered him to lie on the ground and to remove his clothes.

“He removed all of his clothes and remained naked. They kicked him and slapped him all over the body while questioning him about what he was doing with his lover in the car but he could not explain as they rained blows on him,” said the source.

He managed to free himself and had to dig deep and summoned his athletic abilities to survive the vicious attack.

“The robbers took his clothes and a wallet which contained US$2 and a national identity card and drove off in his car,” said the source. Hebert reported the incident to the police.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident. He warned members of the public against parking outside homes in the evening, pointing out that they risked being robbed and attacked.

Hebert begged this reporter not to write the story as he said it would tarnish his reputation and when he was pressed further for a comment he said: “There is nothing I can do. You can write whatever you want to write.” -B Metro

Govt Must Pay Polygamists

While some sections of society denounce polygamy as an archaic practice that is not suitable for modern lifestyles, the BaTonga community of Binga believe it cultivates family unity and reduces incidents of domestic violence while suppressing HIV infections.
They claim polygamy reduces spinsterhood as there are more women than men in the country.

For that service, they want the Government to pay them.

Due to the preservation of culture, the BaTonga community in Binga District, Matabeleland North has one of the country’s low HIV infection rates which stands at five percent against the national average of 11 percent.

Following the outbreak of HIV, health experts championed monogamy as a measure to reduce infections.

But for the BaTonga people from Binga, the continued practice of polygamy among other cultural practices seems to have saved them from the HIV scourge.

The BaTonga believe that while citizens strive for monogamous marriages, there is evidence that these relationships are failing and hence contributing to high divorce cases.

Instead, the BaTonga have embraced polygamy as part of their lifestyle.

Saturday Chronicle caught up with some polygamous men in the Siachilaba area, under Chief Siachilaba, who backed the cultural practice saying it has kept families together.

A father of nine, Mr Nelson Munkuli said polygamy comes naturally in the BaTonga community as most of them were born in polygamous families.

Mr Munkuli is married to two women and is looking for a third one.

“My father had seven wives and 35 children if I’m not mistaken. So, I’m planning to marry another wife just to follow in my father’s footsteps. So far, I have nine children and one of my wives is pregnant and I expect another child soon,” said Mr Munkuli.

“I’m inspired by my late father, so that is why I’m saying I want to have at least three wives. I’m cognisant that having more wives comes with more responsibility. We are living in different timelines from my father’s generation.

“Unlike in the past where education was not prioritised, I have to send all my children to school, so that is why I want to limit my wives to three.”

He said one of his wives is his late brother’s widow, but to guard against HIV infections, they both tested for HIV and were declared free of the virus.

Mr Munkuli said by marrying his late brother’s wife, he is also taking care of his sibling’s children as his and doing so is key in cementing relations.

He said being fair to all his wives was key to strengthening family ties.

“For instance, I have a duty roster that I maintain with my wives. If I’m spending two days with one of them, I make sure that I spend two other days with the other wife. That timetable has to be strictly followed. I also have a separate hut which I sleep in especially when I don’t want to be with any of them. That room is important in the management of conflicts and all polygamous men have it,” he said.

“Even when I’m tired, I just resort to it because it is not good for a man to claim to be tired. When I buy groceries, I take everything to that room and that is where I share the goodies with my wives. Because, if you don’t do that and take the groceries to the bedroom of one of the wives, the other can be jealous and even think that you hide some of the things from her and that creates conflicts.”

Mr Munkuli said the Government should consider incentivising polygamous men as they were providing a service to the nation.

“As we speak there are more women than men in the country. So, can you imagine without polygamous men where will those other women find love? It is even better to be openly polygamous because some of these men who claim to be in monogamous relationships are the ones trapped in infidelity relationships. I think, the Government should consider rewarding polygamous men as they are assisting a lot of women,” said Mr Munkuli. Chronicle

Man Forces Self On Gogo( 84)

THE 84-year-old gogo only managed to escape her 21-year-old rap_ist when he fell asleep.

It took all her strength and courage to crawl to her front gate, seeking help.

HER RAPIST WAS FOUND NAKED ON HER BED, ASLEEP WITH A CAN OF BOOZE AT HIS SIDE!

The young man had gained entry to gogo’s house at a village in KZN, while she was asleep.

The victim was alone as her daughter did not return home on Saturday night, 1 October and the man repeatedly rap_ed her.

Social Development MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza said the suspect allegedly overpowered the gogo.

The victim only managed to escape after the attacker had rap_ed her several times, and then fell asleep.

She then crawled down to her front gate to seek help.

“The neighbour was woken up by her barking dogs. He went to look and saw the gogo, who told him there was a man in her house,” Khoza said.

When the neighbours went into the house, they found the perpetrator sleeping nak_ed, with his clothes on the floor and a can of alcohol next to him.

Khoza said many cruel people often took advantage of senior citizens.

“Elderly, defenceless persons live in fear as they are attacked and rap_ed while in their own homes. We find solace in that the evil criminal was found at the crime scene,” she said.

Khoza added that the law must show no mercy to the suspect, who had shown no mercy to the gogo.

She criticised the perpetrator’s family, who attempted to have the matter swept under the carpet by trying to pay inhlawulo (fine or damages) to the victim.

“The fact that there are people who even suggest paying inhlawulo shows the extent of how bad our society has become.

“There is no better punishment for a person who rap_es than sending him to prison.”

A team of social workers were dispatched to provide psychosocial support to the victim and her family for trauma debriefing and containment.

Lieutenant-colonel Nqobile Gwala confirmed that the Creighton police were investigating a case of rap_e.

POMONA MONEY: Harare Tells Off Nguwaya

Harare City Council has vowed that it would not pay US$3,5 million to Geogenix BV Limited after cancelling the much-publicised deal with the Netherlands-based company.

Last month, acting town clerk Phakamile Moyo wrote to Geogenix BV notifying them that the contract had been cancelled.

“Pursuant to the agreement entered between City of Harare and Geogenix BV, we advise that council resolve to terminate the contract in its sitting on the August 3, 2022,” read part of Moyo’s letter dated September 23, 2022.

Under the terms of the deal, any party which breaches the contract is supposed to pay US$3,5 million, but mayor Jacob Mafume said they would not pay a single dollar.

“We were never part of the deal from the onset and we continue not to be part of it. Cabinet is one that set and gave it a national status, so it’s a national project. As far as we are concerned, Harare City Council has never had capacity and it will never have capacity to pay a single cent. We know the law and we will defend our position,” Mafume said.

Efforts to get a comment from Geogenix BV local executive chairperson Delish Nguwaya were fruitless as he did not respond to text messages, or answer his mobile phone.

Under the deal, the local authority was supposed to pay US$22 000 per day or an estimated US$1 million a month to Geogenix BV.

In previous interviews, Nguwaya was adamant that the company was going ahead with the project besides Harare City Council terminating it.

Speaking during a tour recently, Nguwaya said nothing had changed and they were going ahead with the project to fulfil their contractual agreement with Harare City Council.

“Everything we are doing is above board. The problem we have is not with Harare City Council, but an individual, Harare mayor Jacob Mafume, who wants the deal to be renegotiated. He was not the mayor, but all the councillors agreed with the deal. We are going to forge ahead with the deal and if he wants to cancel it, the council will pay the stipulated US$3,5 million,” he said.–Newsday

Chinese Miners Pose Accident Risk At Boterekwa

SHURUGWI – Residents of Shurugwi have appealed to Government to intervene and stop dangerous mining activities in the Botorekwa escarpment that are destroying the highway and causing many fatal accidents.

The residents accused Chinese nationals and some locals of mining in the Boterekwa hills without due regard to the environment and the state of the highway.

Former Shurugwi Mayor, Bulle Madzitire said that the country was staring at an environmental disaster.

“The Chinese are looting daily and they have destroyed some of the mountains which were meant for tourist attraction. Where are we going as a country? Where are these minerals going and what is EMA doing because the environment has been destroyed?

“Our minerals are being looted yet we have water challenges, no sporting facilities and Peak Mine Stadium has collapsed,” said Madzitire.

The outcry followed a recent bus accident that resulted in the death of one woman. Residents said that the Emergence Road Rehabilitation Program (ERRP) should be used to rehabilitate the road which is in a bad state because of the illegal mining activities.
Midlands Police spokesperson Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the recent accident in which Pardon Magoche was driving a Joma Bus with 42 passengers. When he reached the 40km peg, the bus rolled back and fell on its side. A woman who tried to jump out of the bus was trapped and died, 20 passengers sustained injuries and were ferried to Shurugwi District Hospital.

Midlands Mining Commissioner Tariro Ndlovu said miners in the Boterekwa area are issued with Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) certificates from EMA and their operations are guided by mining laws.
“Boterekwa is not a reserved place where people can complain about the mining activities carried there. There are so many mining claims which were pegged there just like what ZIMASCO was doing. All those mines in the Boterekwa area are legal and companies operating there are working within laws and regulations.

“There is EMA which is there to assess the activities and issue out Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) certificates. Residents should also not worry on what happen down stream since they claim that the miners use cyanide. The miners have been granted certificates after assessment,”said Ndlovu.

Efforts to get a comment from the Environment Management Agency (EMA) were futile.- Masvingo Mirror

“Rigobert Song Can’t Take Indomitable Lions To World Cup”

Cameroon coach Rigobert Song has been criticised for his style of play and a lack of fluidity.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup bound team suffered two defeats during the recent friendly window, falling 2-0 to Uzbekistan and 1-0 to South Korea in eastern Asia.

With just over a month left before the tournament starts, the coach’s popularity in his country has waned.

And his former teammate in the Cameroon’s 2003 Fifa Confederations Cup side, Achille Emana, believes Song is not good enough to manage the Indomitable Lions at the World Cup.

“We shouldn’t have sacked (former coach) Tony Conceicao so quickly. With all the respect I have for [Rigo], he must not lie to himself, he is not up to it,” Emana said, as cited by BBC Africa.

“Of course he qualified us for the World Cup but since he took over, he hasn’t improved the team or figured out his first team. If we go to Qatar in this state, then we are heading straight for disaster.”

Despite the criticism, Song continues to enjoy the support of the president of Cameroon’s football federation, Samuel Eto’o.

The Indomitable Lions will meet Brazil, Serbia and Switzerland in Group G at the World Cup.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Mnangagwa Apologists Invade Churches

By Fanuel Chinowaita

Emerson Mnangagwa forms Pastors for ED movement and deploys its members to some churches which are at undisignated places.
According to a reliable source who pressed a red button, there is a woman preacher who visited their church in Mutare and was given platform to preach.

The source added that at first the preacher was apolitical but ended up heaping all the praises on Mnangagwa which did not go well with the congregants.

In addition, the preacher asked to be added on church groups where she is asking for names and I’D numbers, promising to give youths some money for projects.

The woman declined to communicate with me when I asked her and she referred me to her boss called Evangelist
Idirashe Dongo.

Idirashe Dongo reviewed that she belongs to Pastors4ED Movement, which has a mission to mobilize and encourage Christians to participate I activities that support ordained leadership for it to deliver for the benefit of the nation.

Dongo also said that the movement was started by Mnangagwa.

She said, “It was an Inspiration from The President Cde ED Mnangagwa himself as we saw him building up relationship with Churches in the Land that he is Governing, and we said , when a King has called you to come and walk together for National Building & Peace, why not?”

However Evangelist Dongo rejects that their is political violence in Zimbabwe.

She said, “Was there ever an unfree and fair election in Zimbabwe before? The recent Election of 2018, even the Highest Courts of the Land allowed a Process on a disputed election, and a judgement was passed.

“I have never witnessed such ‘political violence’ , have you yourself, where?”

Meanwhile, some church members who raised a red flag have vowed to reject dragged into politics through fake prophets and evangelists who they say are satanists, who are send to destroy the churches of God.

ZEC Speaks On Constituency Delimitation

By- The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has issued an update on the constituency and wards delimitation.

In a statement, ZEC spokesperson Commissioner Jasper Mangwana urged stakeholders to cooperate with officers during the process. Reads the statement:

PRESS STATEMENT ON DELIMITATION UPDATE

1. Introduction Following the announcement of the commencement of the delimitation exercise in the General Notice published in the Government Gazette of 24 May 2022, the successful conduct of delimitation stakeholder engagements during the same month and the release of a population Census Report by ZlMstats, the Commission is now at an advanced stage of conducting delimitation fieldwork.

Factors Influencing Delimitation

In the conduct of this exercise, provisions of Section 161 of the Constitution guide the Commission.

Section 161(5) of the Constitution states that the Commission must ensure that no ward is divided between two or more local authority areas. The Commission must also ensure that no ward is divided between two or more constituencies.

Section 161(6) of the Constitution further states that in dividing Zimbabwe into wards and constituencies, the Zimbabwe Electoral constituencies, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission must in respect of any area, give due consideration to:

• Its physical features

• The means of communication within the area

• The geographical distribution of registered voters

• Any community of interest as between registered voters

• Existing electoral boundaries

• Its population

The Delimitation fieldwork is a culmination of a series of preparatory exercises conducted since the beginning of the year.

  1. Voter Registration and Compilation of the Delimitation Voters’ Roll

In compliance with the delimitation steps, the Commission conducted phases 1 and 2 of the mobile voter registration exercise for delimitation in February and April this year to determine the country’s voter population. The voters’ roll for delimitation closed on 30 May 2022.

This voters’ roll was open for inspection at 11 107 established centres throughout the country from 17 July 2022 to 26 July 2022. In addition, Telone and Econet mobile phone subscribers also used the USSD code *265# and the online bvrinspection.zec.org.zw to check their registration status. 50.03% of the 5804569 registered voters inspected the voters’ roll.

  1. Stakeholder Engagements

Following the conclusion of Phases 1 and 2 of the mobile voter registration exercises the Commission lined up a series of sensitisation meetings with various stakeholders to discuss pre-delimitation exercises.

The stakeholder meetings ran from 17 to 29 May 2022. The meetings sought among other issues to:

• Apprise stakeholders on the impending delimitation exercise.

• Brief stakeholders on provisions of the law with respect to the delimitation exercise and the link between census and delimitation.

• Brief stakeholders on continuous voter registration and the mobile voter registration exercise recently conducted by the Commission and its impact on the delimitation process.

• Highlight the critical role played by the various stakeholders in the delimitation process.

The following groups of stakeholders were engaged:

• Media

• Political Parties on the Commission’s database

• Political parties in Parliament and Chapter 12 Commissions

• The Security Sector

• People with disabilities, the Youth and Women

• Civil Society Organisations

• Service Providers

• Ministry of Local Government, Ministers of State for Provincial Affairs and Traditional Leaders

• Government ministries

  1. Trainings

The Commission conducted Geographical Information System (GIS) technical trainings for all critical staff. These technical trainings commenced on 6 September 2022 and ended on 15 September 2022. The trainings were meant to equip participants with GIS technical skills which are essential In the actual conduct of this delimitation exercise.

Participants were drawn from ZEC, Local Authorities and other Government Departments such as ZIMStats and State Universities.

  1. Current Delimitation Activities

In preparation for mapping afresh electoral boundaries, the Commission is bringing together provincial and district maps with topographical features such as mountains, rivers, roads, communication lines, settlements and different types of land use. These maps and general plans were obtained from the Surveyor General’s Office and the Department of Spatial Planning.

After mapping polling areas, fieldwork is carried out to verify the polling area boundaries in what is referred to as ground truthing. Polling areas are then combined to form wards while several wards are combined to form constituencies. The average voter population of each constituency is obtained by dividing the delimitation voters’ roll population by 210 constituencies with an allowable upper and lower limit of 20%.

  1. Delimitation Tlmeframe

The Commission expects to conclude the exercise by December this year. In terms of Section 161(2) delimitation must be completed six (6) months before the conduct of any general election for it to be applicable to that election. Failure to adhere to this provision means the results of the delimitation exercise will not apply for the next general election, as the Commission will be compelled by the law to revert to boundaries of the 2007/2008 delimitation exercise.

  1. Conclusion

The Commission would like to assure the electorate that no one will be prejudiced by the delimitation outcome. The delimitation results will be an outcome based on the Commission’s adherence to the country’s legal provisions and fair practice. At all stages of the process, voter education and stakeholder engagements will be conducted to bring all interested parties on board.

The Commission is appealing to all stakeholders to cooperate with its officers during this process.

Vote Buying Rocks Zanu PF Ahead Of Weekend Elections

By-Vote buying has rocked the ruling Zanu PF party ahead of this weekend’s central committee members’ election meeting.

The party is holding elections for its highest decision-making body this weekend ahead of the elective congress to be conducted later this month.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa this week read a riot act to his senior members in which he confirmed that corruption was rife ahead of the Central Committee elections.

Mnangagwa said there is no room for chicanery, name-dropping, violence, or imposition of candidates ahead of these elections.

“There is no room for chicanery of whatever nature and form. Vote-buying, violence, name dropping and imposition of candidates are not and will never be part of our political organisational DNA.”
To fulfil the party’s indispensable values of democracy that were soldered during the liberation struggle, culminating in the attainment of independence in 1980, President Mnangagwa said the Central Committee elections must be approached “with great diligence and, purpose and spirit of camaraderie”.
“This is more so as the Central Committee is the highest organ of the party in-between congresses. In light of this, every cadre of the party is reminded that there is no room for concessions with regard to matters of party principles, rules and regulations.
“We are a revolutionary party, which fought and delivered democracy and the utility of universal suffrage. At all times, we must practise and defend that democracy.
“As the only party that is representative of the people of this great country, we must continue to observe to the letter the provisions of our party constitution, party ideals and ethos.”
President Mnangagwa said all eligible members of the party had a right to participate in the elections, subject to the rules, regulations and procedures.
“I, therefore, call upon the relevant party departments and National Elections Directorate to ensure that the rules and regulations are well clarified, explained, understood and adhered to.”
The President also rallied Politburo members to remain resolute in providing sound, principled and consistent guidance and leadership as this will ensure the continued growth of the revolutionary party.
“Let us, thus, never shy away from making bold and sometimes uncomfortable decisions for the growth and continuous re-generation of our party. We are the only party with a revolutionary history; a people-centred agenda for the present and a vision for the future. As such, our organisational acumen, fluidity and strategies must reflect accordingly.
“As national leaders, individually and collectively, we must move in one accord. Our unity must never be tampered with. Violent and divisive elements must be denounced, exposed and rejected. We are servants of the party and the people of this great country.
“These are the ideals we set for ourselves from the formative stages of the revolution and our colossal mass party,” President Mnangagwa said.
Amid continued sanctions against Zimbabwe that are designed to dislodge the ruling party from power, the President said youths must be nurtured to remain the vanguard of the party as he commended Zanu PF structures and affiliates for the sterling work in mobilising and recruiting new members towards ensuring 5 million votes in next year’s elections.
“The mobilisation work by all leagues of the party alongside other affiliate organisations is applauded. The increased attendance by the youth at various Government programmes and the overall visibility of our party, through robust efforts of affiliates such as the Young Women for Economic Development; Men BelievED; ZICOSU; Teachers for ED; Councillors for ED and Mahwindi for ED, among others, should continue to be encouraged.
“The youth in particular must be nurtured to remain the vital contingent and vanguard of our party. Their role in the present national development agenda as well as the need for them to defend the rich liberation heritage should continue to be explained to them.
“This is more pertinent as our erstwhile detractors and their proxies continue to seek ways to capture and politically corrupt our young people. Zanu PF will never surrender its responsibility to guide, guard and provide for our young people.
“As we keep our organisational focus on the 2023 Harmonised General Elections, the revolutionary rallying call, ‘muZanu PF iwe neni tine basa,’ must galvanise our grassroots towards exponential growth of the party membership and resultant voters.”
President Mnangagwa said the onus is on every member of Zanu PF to work around the clock and ensure that the party resoundingly wins next year’s elections.
“No one should be allowed to divide our party. We are one, colossal, mass revolutionary party; hence every wing of the party, affiliate organisation and indeed member, is directed to work. Together in unity, from the village, ward, constituency, district and provincial level, we all shoulder the responsibility of ensuring a resounding and thunderous victory for the party in the 2023 Harmonised General Elections”.
A moment of silence was observed in honour of national heroes Brigadier General Charles Kaneta and de Highten Nkomo who passed on recently.

Song Not Good Enough To Take Cameroon To World Cup

Caps United Seek To Bury Cranborne

Anyone who loves CAPS United will know that 2022 is one of, if not the worst year in the club’s history.

The Green Machine has become the laughing stock of the country’s top flight, amid serious financial problems which have threatened the former Cup Kings’ existence.

When Lloyd Chitembwe’s charges travel to Rusape for a date with Cranborne Bullets at Vengere this Sunday, they will be mindful of the fact that the possibility of being relegated is now razor-thin.

Makepekepe dramatically beat Triangle at the National Sports Stadium last Sunday —a result which all but confirmed their survival with five games left.

They will however be aware that the reverse fixture at the giant facility back in May, was the watershed in what has been a disastrous campaign.

CAPS players staged a strike over unpaid salaries and winning bonuses ahead of their contest with the army side —a setback which nearly led to the cancellation of the game.

They arrived nearly 30 minutes late and the clash started 45 minutes after the scheduled kick off time, in violation of PSL rules, though that is a story for another day.

Then captain Ronald ‘Rooney’ Chitiyo was fingered as the ringleader of the mutiny and consequently fired by club president Farai Jere, together with Denis Dauda, Rodwell Chinyengetere, Clive Augusto, Devon Chafa and Simbarashe Chinani.

Chafa, Chinyengetere and Chitiyo were later pardoned but the diminutive midfielder packed his bags and joined Northern Region Division One big spenders Simba Bhora anyway.

Though Jere is certainly not the type to admit that, he will look back at fiasco back in May and conclude that it was the turning point for the struggling Harare giants.

The fighting fire with fire approach used by Jere to solve the problem was not the best, expects warned.

The Green Machine has become a travesty of it’s former self but focus is now on fishing the season on a high and Chitembwe is confident that his charges can dodge Nesbert ‘Yabo’ Saruchera’s Bullets.

“I think we have had very good preparations. We are expecting a good result. I think our previous win over Triangle gave us a huge lift,” said Chitembwe.

“It is easier to approach a game coming from a win than coming from a defeat but all the same, all games give us lessons, whether you would have won or otherwise.

“We are determined to win this match to continue on our upward trajectory,” added the coach.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Why Is The Passport Office Website Down?

By Jacob Mutisi | Is there any reason why Zimbabwe’s registrar general’s (RG) website is still down (http://www.rg.gov.zw) and under construction for over 2 weeks. This is time for a partnership between the parastatal and the private sectors so that such an important service provider cannot and should not be offline. The registrar general’s office in one of the most important departments to Zimbabwe’s struggling economy.

This is the office that issue Adoption, Birth and Death Certificates, Changing your Name, issuing of birth certificates, Correction of Birth and Death Certificates, Import and Export of Bodies, Issuance of duplicate full birth certificates, Marriage Certificates, National Registration, Non-citizen Birth Registrations and the Passport & Travel Documents.

Surely why should such an important government department not have a working website that is up 24/7. The latest digital diagnostic report says Zimbabwe has made massive digital advancements, including a revolution in mobile money, resulting in about eight million mobile wallet holders in a country of less than fifteen million. We as a nation should leverage on this adoption of ICT and make sure institutions like the registrar general have the right structures to make it easy for our country men and women to acquire their legal documents. General Register (RG) Office is the name given to the civil registry in the Zimbabwe.

The RG is the government agency responsible for the recording of vital records such as births, deaths, and marriages , which may also include adoptions, stillbirths, civil unions, etc., and historically, sometimes included records relating to deeds and other property transactions.

Zimbabwean’s  interactions with Zimbabwean government websites are often memorable for all the wrong reasons.

These are websites that can be easily hacked and most are developed using wordpress.  According to our research that was done in August 2022, all government websites are designed, developed and hosted by GISP (Government Internet Service Provider). We brought to government attention that none of the emails for the registered domains that have websites are either receiving or delivered. This led to Zimbabwe’s cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, Members of Parliament, permanent secretaries,to permanently use either a Gmail, Yahoo or a Hotmail as a means of Government communication. Zimbabwe is still being the most hackable country according to https://fossbytes.com/most-hackable-countries/ the use of these FREE emails exposes our country’s secrets and communication to the outside world and the so called enemies of the state. The government of Zimbabwe  is one institution that supports the use of Facebook, Twitter and other social media to reach out to the masses, but when it comes to official Government communication, officials should be stopped from using Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail or any other FREE email provider and use emails that are provided by our Government Internet Service Provider (GISP). If GISP does not have the capabilities then we should romp in Zarnet, another government ISP which is more efficient in terms of service delivery.

With the President ED Mnangagwa pushing for investments and marketing the positive image of Zimbabwe it is paramount that we get all government institutions to have a web presence. Let’s take a leaf from our neighbour South Africa, it is a requirement (Government Policy) for all government institutions, departments and local authorities to have a domain, email address, a website and effective use of social media to interact with partners and potential partners.

Every government should have a functional website, this is the first connection you have with citizens. It may be an in-person meeting or a social post, but it is more likely that the very first time citizens engage a government  by visiting your website. The government website is one of the most essential tools for meeting the needs of Zimbabwe’s citizens, and so optimising it around the citizen experience is crucial. Zimbabwe should Make Information Easy to Find and access starting with accessing the registrar general’s office. For an average internet user, the amount of time that one spends on any website is minimal – in fact, one estimates clocks in the average website visit to 15 seconds or less. This is why it’s important to make valuable information as easy to find as possible.

Utilizing your organization’s ICT professionals may be valuable to re-think the structure, layout, and ease-of-use of your organization’s website. It may also be helpful to display easy-to-find links to meeting and agenda information, such as the agenda itself, archived videos and minutes from past meetings, and live streams.

By creating a functional website with easy navigation, officials can better connect with their constituents and ensure that the public stays well-informed at all times. You might also consider adding a rotator so that when critical information comes up, you are ready to add information so citizens see it easily on their first visit.

While the website is the top platform for communicating with citizens, Granicus’ 2022 Digital Communications Trends report has more information on how government organizations are connecting with the public.  Government websites are developed by the Government Internet Service Providers (GISP). It is important to get these websites working for the good of the government. If you need any further advice or information please do not hesitate to contact me on +263772278161.

About Basic Hygiene

Half of health care facilities worldwide lack basic hygiene services with water and soap or alcohol-based hand rub where patients receive care and at toilets in these facilities, according to the latest Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) report by WHO and UNICEF.

Around 3.85 billion people use these facilities, putting them at greater risk of infection, including 688 million people who receive care at facilities with no hygiene services at all.

“Hygiene facilities and practices in health care settings are non-negotiable.

Their improvement is essential to pandemic recovery, prevention and preparedness. Hygiene in health care facilities cannot be secured without increasing investments in basic measures, which include safe water, clean toilets, and safely managed health care waste,” said Dr Maria Neira, WHO Director, Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health.

“I encourage Member States to step up their efforts to implement their 2019 World Health Assembly commitment to strengthen water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services in health care facilities, and to monitor these efforts.”

The latest report, “Progress on WASH in health care facilities 2000–2021: special focus on WASH and infection prevention and control”, has for the first time established this global baseline on hygiene services – which assessed access at points of care as well as toilets – as more countries than ever report on critical elements of WASH services in their hospitals and other health centres. For hygiene, data are now available for 40 countries, representing 35% of the world’s population, up from 21 countries in 2020 and 14 in 2019.

The newly established global estimate reveals a clearer and more alarming picture of the state of hygiene in health care facilities. Though 68% of health care facilities had hygiene facilities at points of care, and 65% had handwashing facilities with water and soap at toilets, only 51% had both and therefore met the criteria for basic hygiene services. Furthermore, 1 in 11 (9%) of health care facilities globally have neither.

“If health care providers don’t have access to a hygiene service, patients don’t have a health care facility,” said Kelly Ann Naylor, UNICEF Director of WASH and Climate, Environment, Energy, and Disaster Risk Reduction (CEED).

“Hospitals and clinics without safe water and basic hygiene and sanitation services are a potential death trap for pregnant mothers, newborns, and children. Every year, around 670 000 newborns lose their lives to sepsis. This is a travesty – even more so as their deaths are preventable.”

The report notes that contaminated hands and environments play a significant role in pathogen transmission in health care facilities and the spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Interventions to increase access to handwashing with water and soap and environmental cleaning form the cornerstone of infection prevention and control programmes and are crucial to providing quality care, particularly for safe childbirth.
Coverage of WASH facilities is still uneven across different regions and income groupings:

Facilities in sub-Saharan Africa are lagging on hygiene services. While three-quarters (73%) of health care facilities in the region overall have alcohol-based hand rub or water and soap at points of care, only one-third (37%) have handwashing facilities with water and soap at toilets.

The vast majority (87%) of hospitals have hand hygiene facilities at points of care, compared to 68% of other healthcare facilities.
In the Least Developed Countries, only 53% of health care facilities have access on-premises to a protected water source.

To compare, the global figure is 78% with hospitals (88%) doing better than smaller health care facilities (77%), and the figure for eastern and south-eastern Asia is 90%. Globally, around 3% of health care facilities in urban areas and 11% in rural areas had no water service.

Of the countries with available data, 1 in 10 health care facilities globally had no sanitation service.

The proportion of health care facilities with no sanitation services ranged from 3% in Latin America and the Caribbean and in eastern and south-eastern Asia to 22% in sub-Saharan Africa. In the Least Developed Countries, just 1 in 5 (21%) had basic sanitation services in health care facilities.
The data further reveals that many health care facilities lack basic environmental cleaning and safe segregation and disposal of health care waste.
The report is being launched at World Water Week taking place in Stockholm, Sweden.

The annual conference, which runs from 23 August to 1 September, explores new ways to tackle humanity’s greatest challenges: from food security and health to agriculture, technology, biodiversity and climate.

Chinese Miners Expose Road Users To Perilous Road Accidents

Man Falls Asleep After Raping Gogo ( 84)

The incident happened on Friday last week at around 7pm.

Botswana New Wildlife Law To Benefit Rural Communities

BOTSWANA NEW WILDLIFE RESOURCES LAW COMING SOON TO
BENEFIT RURAL COMMUNITIES

BY EMMANUEL KORO

Johannesburg, 6 October 2022

For Botswana, it’s high time that hunting communities start to meaningfully benefit from their natural resources, including wildlife through international hunting.

A new law called the Community Based Natural Resources Management (CBNRM) Act will soon be introduced.

“After close to three decades of unfruitful attempts to have a CBNRM legislation and practitioners’ manual for Botswana, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has joined forces with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to assist the Botswana government with drafting a CBNRM Bill and CBNRM practitioners manual,” said a recent statement issued by the Botswana UNDP Office.

The CBNRM Bill aims to ensure that local communities “don’t get a bad deal from hunting contracts.”

“Government will look at the agreements to ensure that communities are not getting a bad deal,” said Botswana Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP), Dr Kabelo Senyatso delivering a presentation at the recent Africa Wildlife Consultative Forum held in Kasane. “We discovered some of the communities did not get a fair share in some of the 2021 hunting agreements. The DWNP reserves the right to determine whether or not the agreement between the community and the safari operator is fair or not.”

Months later, excitement is mounting in Botswana that the Bill can be debated in Parliament soon.

“Government will look at the agreements to ensure that communities are not getting a bad deal,” said the Botswana Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP), Dr Kabelo Senyatso. “We discovered some of the communities did not get a fair share in some of the 2021 hunting agreements. The DWNP reserves the right to determine whether or not the agreement between the community and the safari operator is fair or not.”

Consultations of relevant stakeholders across the country were recently held, resulting in a commonly shared position by the majority of stakeholders that CBNRM legislation has long been overdue.
“The legislation will provide guidance on how community-based organisations (CBOs) can establish business arrangements and how to terminate business arrangements if they are not fruitful, it will also look at benefit-sharing between government and the CBOs. This will ensure that there is rural development and communities benefit from the natural resources around them,” said FAO Legal Consultant Dr Emma Chitsove.
The General Manager at Okavango Kopano Mokoro Community Trust (OKMCT) Seikaneng Moepedi welcomed the development noting that the legislation has long been overdue hence the need to finalise and implement it soon.
“The new legislation will give Trusts (Community Trusts) the power to control the pricing of wildlife during the hunting season, pricing of photographing rights in their concessions. It will also prevent the embezzlement of funds by CBO managers and give the community a fair chance of benefitting from their natural resources. We hope the legislation could be put in place soon because we want to take control of the resources in our areas and assist our communities,” said Moepedi.
International hunting revenue has already brought significant conservation and socio-economic benefits to Botswana hunting communities. The income from hunting has among other things been used for wildlife conservation involving the employment of community game scouts who conduct regular anti-poaching patrols. The Chobe Enclave Community which is next to the Chobe National Park with the world’s biggest elephant population in a single national park, they have used hunting revenue to establish community stores, lodges, and capacity-building. They have hundreds of thousands of Pulas (Botswana’s local currency) in their bank account. Their books are audited by professional auditing firms.
The move to introduce the Botswana CBNRM Bill comes at a time when the Southern African hunting communities are increasingly making demands for win-win benefits from international hunting by removing the middlemen. The middlemen for international hunting are the local and foreign safari hunting companies that market southern Africa as a must-visit international hunting destination; where the big five are hunted.

In a recent discussion at the African Wildlife Consultative Forum held in Kasane, Botswana, representatives of Botswana hunting communities said that to receive more benefits from hunting they intend to remove the middlemen of international hunting. These hunting companies buy the international wildlife hunting quotas from SADC hunting communities then sell the huntable wildlife to international hunters and also handle their hunts in Africa.

Despite acknowledging that they receive payment from the safari hunting companies, the Botswana hunting communities that own the wildlife think they should be getting paid more than what they are currently receiving. Hence their call to remove the middlemen.

However, the representatives of the Botswana hunting communities have admitted that the displacement of the middlemen might take time because currently, they lack the skills to market their areas as attractive international hunting destinations. They also don’t have skilled professional hunters to handle hunting for international hunters when they come to Africa.

Therefore, the hunting communities ironically need the safari hunting companies that they would like to remove as middlemen; to first train them to market their hunts overseas and also to help them train professional hunters who would in the future handle the hunts of international hunters who come to Africa.

“We think this is the right time to remove the middleman and let communities market their own natural resources,” said a member of SADC Community Leaders Network (SCLN) and CEO Ngamiland NGOs, Mr Siyoka Simasiku. “Communities should not be stakeholders but shareholders.”

However, Mr Siyoka said that this transition from middlemen to hunting community self-marketing will take time as “there is need for capacity building.”

Meanwhile, Chief Timex Maolosi of Botswana’s Samunkuyo Trust said that all the community trusts in Botswana met in Maun recently and recommended the need for capacity building of hunting communities to enable them to market their wildlife to preferred markets.

“Communities should become shareholders or owners of the hunting industry in their localities,” said Chief Maolosi. “There is a need to do away with middlemen in the hunting industry but it will take time to achieve capacity building.”

Text Message Exposes Cheating Married Woman

By A Correspondent- A Mutare man got the shock of his life when he discovered through a text message that his wife’s lover sired the couple’s second child.

The devastated Tavonga Kawura packed his clothes and left his matrimonial home in a huff after the discovery.

The burden of providing for the children alone have forced Brenda Chitera to approach the Mutare Civil Court to apply for the first child’s maintenance.

Testifying before Mutare magistrate, Mr Xavier Chipato, Kawura said he discovered the second child’s paternity through a text message in Chitera’s phone.

In the text message, Chitera was pleading with her boyfriend, only identified as Gono, to take his child and introduce him to his real family.

In her maintenance application, Chitera was seeking a monthly payment of US$100 from Kawura.

However, Kawura said the amount was too much for him as he earns $92 000 every month.

He said he is prepared to pay for the child’s school related expenses, while she also provides for the child’s other needs since maintenance is for both parents.

Kawura said Gono should also chip in and take care of his child.

“I am still bitter over Chitera’s great betrayal. How could she have an affair and be impregnated by her lover? I had to pay for the preparation and medical expenses for someone else’s child. I only found out in April when the child was eight months old that she is not my daughter,” he said.

Kawura added: “I am still trying to get to terms with this. I left my matrimonial home with nothing but shame.”

He said Chitera applied for maintenance after being deserted by Gono.

In response, Chitera said the child’s needs should always come first no matter what happened.

She said they should equally contribute towards the child’s well-being.

She negotiated for US$60, but Kawura would not budge.

“The person staying with a child incurs more expenses. I also have the other child to look after and the burden is way beyond me. He only has one child and is not married,” said Chitera.

Mr Chipato ruled that Kawura pays $15 000 per month and meets the child’s school fees and transport expenses.

Madam Boss was reported to have deleted some images of Evangelista with Ngoni, from the phone.

She was unaware that her husband’s lover had already secured the photos somewhere else, presumably for evidence.

Some of the remaining photographs show Ngoni and Evangelista at a house in the rural areas.

Evangelista has been kept indoors by Ngoni after H-Metro exposed their illicit affair sometime in March.

She was initially taken to Avondale but moved out of the lodgings in protest.

She ended up being taken to the house, which belongs to Ngoni and Madam Boss, in Chitungwiza.

Robbers Force 22-Year Old Man To Bed Own Mother

In a strange incident, six robbers who broke into a house in Bulawayo’s Cowdray Park suburb allegedly forced a 22-year-old man to perform sexual acts on his mother after they reportedly stole a plasma TV, cellphones and a solar battery.

The incident was confirmed by Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube and it happened at around 11.30 pm this week on Wednesday at a house owned by the 42-year-old woman who stays with her son in Cowdray Park suburb.

A family member who did not want to be named said the six robbers who were armed with an axe and a kitchen knife swooped on the house while the pair was sleeping.

The source told how the thieves broke into the house and stole cellphones and a TV.

“They smashed a kitchen window before three of them got inside and headed to the owner of the house’s bedroom. They demanded cash and threatened to stab her to death with a kitchen knife,” the source said.

They stuffed a piece of cloth into her mouth while repeatedly demanding money.

“She surrendered three cellphones to them but they demanded more. They force-marched her to her son’s bedroom and woke him before they ordered him to sit on the floor while wearing only underwear,” said the relative to the victims.

After that they sprung a shocker as they reportedly instructed her son to remove his underwear and have sex with his own mother.

“They battered him and he removed his underwear and just lay on top of his mother,” the relative said.

They took his two cellphones and gas cylinder and left in a huff.

The pair reported the matter to the police.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and appealed for information that may lead to the whereabouts of the six thieves.

He said: “Those with information may contact any nearest police station or call them on 2922 -60358.”

Sikhala’s Attorneys Quit Bail Appeals, Push For Trial

By- Lawyers representing Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislators Job Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole have abandoned their planned appeal against a magistrate’s ruling denying the two bail.

The two MPs facing charges of inciting public violence have now shifted attention to their earlier plea to be given State papers in order to prepare for their trial.
Sikhala and Sithole Thursday appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi and were remanded to October 20 for routine remand.
Their attorney Jeremiah Bamu told the court that his clients were no longer interested in appealing Tuesday’s ruling denying them bail.
“The accused have made a decision not to go further with the appeal of the case from yesterday but will be requesting for the copy of the ruling handed out yesterday and full case document,” he said.
Bamu further indicated that although in terms of the law the State can give the defence papers two days before trial it was a short period to prepare.
He said his clients were anxious to prove their innocence.
Bamu told the court that he hoped the State would give him the papers and the video that is going to be used during the trial.
“We seek that the state makes an undertaking on record when they can give us the copy of the video to be used in trial in view of the right to a fair trial,” he pleaded.
The State has in the past promised to give them the papers but has not done so.
Bamu accused the State of delaying proceedings on the pretext that the video in question was still being analysed.
“The state indicated at the initial stages of the case they had submitted the video for forensic analysis and has taken them a long time. It is only fair for the accused to receive the video so they can submit it for analysis.”
“Except analysis cannot be done barely two days before trial therefore the accused should be notified before the trial,” he argued.
The State represented by prosecutor Lancelot Mutsokoti unrepentantly alluded to the fact that they would give the defence papers but should they fail, they were well within their rights.
“State will try to furnish them with the documents and video and if they can not it is still permissible by law,” said Mutsokoti.
The two are being accused of inciting public violence after the death of slain CCC activist Moreblessing Ali.

Manicaland, Masvingo, Mat South To Have Light Rains Over The Weekend

Parts of Matabeleland South, Masvingo and Manicaland will see cool winds and light rain over the weekend, the Meteorological Services Department said yesterday.

In an interview, Met Department Head of Public Weather Services, Mr James Ngoma, said the prevailing high temperatures increase the possibility of cool winds, bringing clouds and light rain.

“As we transition from winter into summer, the temperatures generally increase from cold to hot. But even when it is expected to be hot, we still get short interludes of cooling wind, which at times brings clouds and light rain. For example this weekend, we are expecting cool winds over Matabeleland South, Masvingo and Manicaland, with chances of light rain,” he said.

Mr Ngoma advised the public to take precautionary measures to protect themselves from adverse weather conditions.

“People should drink lots of fluids, particularly water, avoid prolonged stay in the sun, avoid outdoor activities between 11.30am and 3pm and protect themselves from the sun by using umbrellas and wide-brimmed hats. People with albinism should use sunscreens to protect themselves from direct sun”, he said.

Mr Ngoma said Beitbridge recorded 42 degrees Celsius, Harare 31 degrees Celsius while Lupane recorded a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

Most parts of Zimbabwe have been experiencing high temperatures for the past three weeks, but that trend will not last beyond the weekend.

The MSD said it will continue monitoring weather conditions and accordingly update the public.

In its latest forecast, the department said the country should have normal to above normal rainfall during the coming summer cropping season although there are chances of normal-to-below normal rainfall in regions one and two in the very early stages of the season.

It also warned that there could be prolonged dry spells during the season and tropical cyclones were highly likely.

Mnangagwa Warns Cabinet Ministers, Top Civil Servants

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has warned Cabinet ministers and top civil servants to desist from frustrating potential investors by sleeping on duty.

Speaking at a ground-breaking ceremony at Dinson Iron and Steel plant in Manhize, Midlands province yesterday, Mnangagwa said: “We have officials who sit in air-conditioned offices, who take long to approve investors’ documents.

“They just hang their jackets in offices and sometimes read the documents half-way and put them aside — then the next day they come up with another excuse until three days pass, then months, and eventually the project is buried. We say to these officials — down with them.”

Government has been struggling to improve ease of doing business in the country due to corruption, the political and economic environment and bureaucracy.

Zimbabwe has been ranked 140/190 in 2021 and 150/190 in 2022 on ease of doing business international scales. Some of the reasons for the poor rankings are poor monetary policies and skewed property laws; and the long time it takes to secure business licences.

Transparency International has ranked Zimbabwe as one of the top countries with endemic corruption.

On sanctions, Mnangagwa said: “We are rising, in spite of the sanctions. The iron and steel manufacturing plant being established here is a paradigm shifting milestone in our country’s journey towards modernisation and industrialisation.

“The project constitutes a critical building block towards the realisation of the US$12 billion mining economy and our national Vision 2030.”

By Fanuel Chinowaita

Emerson Mnangagwa forms Pastors for ED movement and deploys its members to some churches which are at undisignated places.
Hi

Zambia Rescues Zimbabwe

Neighbouring Zambia has come to the rescue of Zimbabwe with 200 000 tonnes (t) of maize to feed millions currently facing hunger in the country, NewsDay has gathered.

Plans by Zimbabwe to import 200 000 tonnes of maize from Malawi in May did not bear fruit after the deal was contested by the Malawi Parliament in Lilongwe because tender procedures had reportedly been flouted.

Zambia’s Consumer Association confirmed the maize deal to NewsDay.

“According to the information, it’s more like a controlled export because we have some companies which have memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with Congolese and Zimbabwean companies in order to fulfil the MoUs,” the Zambian consumer body said in response to questions from NewsDay.

Insiders close to millers and the Zimbabwean government say there have been hurdles around importation of Malawian and Zambian maize.

“The Malawi delivery is proving to be a problem, but the Zambian one will soon be here because all permits have now been finalised,” a source close to developments told NewsDay.

A high-ranking official at the Grain Marketing Board said: “This maize is being imported by the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ).”

Contacted for comment, Lands and Agriculture ministry secretary John Basera said: “This maize is certainly not being imported by the government; it has to be private players.”

He said Zimbabwe had enough grain.

“We have 1,5 million tonnes of maize from harvest this year plus 300 000t in small grain, then 500 000t carryover stock from last year that puts us at 2,3 million tonnes of grain versus our demand of 2,2 million tonnes,” Basera said.

He said millers who failed to fund 40% of their local requirements locally were importing grain from neighbouring countries.

Efforts to get an official comment from GMAZ president Tafadzwa Musarara were fruitless.

Despite gobbling billions in various agriculture handouts and subsidy schemes, like the Presidential Inputs Scheme, Pfumvudza and the Command Agriculture Programme, Zimbabwe remains food insecure with 5,4 million (36%) of its citizens facing hunger in the current season, according to the World Food Programme.

Zambian social media influencer and politician with the ruling United Party for National Development Joseph Kalibwe last Monday tweeted: “… tonnes of our Zambian maize will be received by our friends, the Command Agriculture publicity proponents on Thursday. Congratulations to our farmers who keep Zambia fed, exporting the rest to other lands and bringing the export money home for further growth.” —Newsday

Son Forced To Bed Own Mum By Armed Gang

He said: “Those with information may contact any nearest police station or call them on 2922 -60358.” —B Metro

Black Stars Keen To Overcome Uruguay

Ghana national team captain Andre Ayew has revealed what his side is planning to do when they play Uruguay in Group H at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The two teams met in the quarterfinals of the 2010 edition when the Black Stars were denied a semifinal berth after Luis Suarez’s handball incident.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward prevented a goal-bound header from Dominic Adiyiah in the final minute of extra time.

The West Africans were awarded a penalty, but Asamoah Gyan’s attempt from spot hit the crossbar.

Ghana eventually lost the game through a penalty shootout and bowed out of the tournament.

Speaking in an interview with Al Jazeera, Ayew, who was part of the of the losing side in 2010, said he is not thinking about revenge when they meet the South Americans at the World Cup.

“As team leader, I don’t believe we should view this game as revenge. Instead, we must be smart enough to recognise that it is a match we need points from,” he said.

“We can’t ignore history, but what Luis Suarez [Uruguay footballer] did is something I could have done in the same situation [used his hand to stop a goal-bound shot in 2010]. It hurt us all. But that’s part of football and it happened years ago.

“We just want to win against Uruguay after everything that has been said in the media. As a player, if you go into a game with the intent of retaliation, you can make a lot of mistakes and be hyper. We just need to stay calm, follow the plan and try to win the game, or do whatever we can to advance to the next stage.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Man Threatens To Commit Suicide Over Domestic Dispute

A WOMAN was granted a peace order against her suicidal ex-husband, who has been constantly stalking and abusing her verbally and emotionally.

Rumbidzai Padenga had applied for a protection order against her ex-husband, Paradzai Mutungwazi, at the Harare Civil Court.

Magistrate Tamara Chibindi granted her application.

Rumbidzai told the court that Paradzai was in the habit of stalking and insulting her in public.

“He even threatens to commit suicide if I don’t reconcile with him.

“He has attempted to take his own life before and was hospitalised for some time.

“He has never laid a hand on me, but threatens to harm me,” Rumbidzai said.

She added:

“He also threatens to kidnap our children so that he can stay with them.

“He goes to their school, and they run away from him because they are afraid of him.”

Paradzai was not in court, and magistrate Chibindi granted the protection order in default.

Madam Boss Collapses

By- Comedian and socialite Tarisai “Madam Boss” Chikocho, collapsed and wailed during a family meeting to discuss the crisis sparked by her husband’s extramarital affair.

The meeting was held in Chitungwiza on Tuesday.
Madam Boss collapsed as her husband, Ngoni Munetsiwa, begged her to allow his pregnant lover, Evangelista Zhou, to remain at their matrimonial house in Seke, until she finds alternative accommodation.
The meeting followed Evangelista’s decision to apply for a peace order against Madam Boss. Ngoni and his sisters tried to persuade her into giving Evangelista a period of time to vacate their Seke home. In return, Ngoni was to persuade Evangelista to drop her protection order application against Madam Boss.
A confident Ngoni said: “I have talked to my wife about this matter and we agreed on a way forward.
“Leave everything to me so that I make sure Evangelista remains safe since she is expecting,”said Ngoni.
The meeting was held at Madam Boss’ mother-in-law’s house. And, after recovering, Madam Boss even performed some house chores. Evangelista lost her job as a nurse at a private hospital when the initial story was published in March. She even threatened to commit suicide back then. It could not be established whether Evangelista had been persuaded to withdraw her application for a protection order against Madam Boss at Chitungwiza Magistrates’ Court.

Mnangagwa Confirms Vote Buying

By-Zanu PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa has read a riot act to his senior members to cow them ahead of the party’s Central Committee elections this weekend.

Mnangagwa said there is no room for chicanery, name-dropping, violence, or imposition of candidates ahead of these elections.

To fill positions in the Central Committee, which is the highest decision-making body outside Congress, President Mnangagwa said Zanu PF will have to stick to its democratic principles, which entail free expression, identification, and selection by relevant organs of the party.
The President told the 365th Session of the Politburo yesterday that relevant party departments and the National Elections Directorate must see to it that party rules and regulations are adhered to in the Central Committee elections.

Mnangagwa Promotes Vigilante Groups

President Emmerson Mnangagwa Wednesday hailed the formation of groups, such as  MahwindiforED, in support of his re-election bid.

Mahwindi or touts are notorious for unruly behaviour, including harassing passengers.

His party has endorsed him as its presidential candidate in the 2023 election.

Addressing the Zanu PF politburo at the party headquarters in Harare, Mnangagwa said:

Meanwhile, the mobilisation work of all leagues of the party alongside other affiliate organisations or is applauded. Government programmes and the overall visibility of our party, through the robust efforts of affiliates such as Young Women for Economic Development, MenBelievED, TeachersforED and MahwindiforED, among others should continue to be encouraged,” he said.

He also said Zimbabweans in the diaspora are welcome to join the ruling party assuring them, “that they are welcome home.” He added:

The Zanu PF government will never abandon any of our citizens, no matter where they may live.

In addition, I commend our party structures in the diaspora, particularly in the United States of America and Canada for organising very vibrant meetings for me to address party structures on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

His remarks came amid rising anti-Zimbabwean immigrant sentiments in South Africa. Zimbabweans have been targets of xenophobic attacks in the neighbouring country.

It is estimated that millions of Zimbabweans fled to South Africa, the UK and other countries seeking economic opportunities and a better life away from poverty.

On Tuesday, the government said 900 000 nationals had crossed the borders between 2020 and 2021.

Who Will Win 2022 Soccer Star Of The Year Award?

There are only five games to go before the curtain comes down on what has been a dramatic Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season.

Manica Diamonds started the campaign like a house on fire, but fizzled-out before many could label them as serious title contenders.

From then, it appeared as though it would be a two-horse race between Dynamos and Chicken Inn, who traded blows at the summit of the table before FC Platimum came out of nowhere to dislodge them.

Norman Mapeza’s charges ascended to the top of the table in July, after their 3-0 demolition of Chicken Inn and have been there since.

The Platinum miners’ incredible resurgence might result in a number of their players being on the Soccer Star of the Year calendar.

That being said, there are a number standout performers from other teams, who might even take the big prize home.

Unless the last five games produces other heroes, the Soccer Star of the Year may be named from the list of five below, though naturally, not everyone will agree.

William Manondo (CAPS United)

The former Harare City striker is a strong contender for the Soccer Star of the Year accolade.

He is the league’s top goal scorer, having scored 15 of Makepekepe’s 28 goals in a season those in the green half of the capital would want to quickly forget.

To score 15 goals for a team like CAPS United and how they have fared this season, is remarkable.

Manondo is 5 goals shy of the personal target he set, 20.

Brian Muza (Chicken Inn)

The speedy striker has had a brilliant season for the Joey ‘Mafero’ Antipas-coached side.

He has 11 goals to his name, in a campaign the Gamecocks were hoping to win the title.

The 23-year old former Talen Vision striker added the much needed impetus in the Chicken Inn attack was arguably the missing link in their jigsaw puzzle.

Walter Musona (FC Platinum)

The former Polokwane City striker returned to Zimbabwe when most thought his once promising career was headed towards the end.

He has been brilliant and was one of the key drivers of the Platinum miners’ revival.

The former Young Warriors star has 10 goals for the FC Platinum this season and a couple of assists too under his belt.

His top-drawer free kick in stoppage time against Highlanders at Baboufields last Sunday might have impressed even those rooting for Bosso.

Platinum winning the league, which is now a question of when not a matter of if, may work in Musona’s advantage.

Tymon Mvula (Dynamos)

He has been instrumental in the Harare giants’ quest to end their 7-year wait for the league title.

The former Hwange goalkeeper has kept 16 clean sheets for DeMbare this season.

The only time Mvula has put a glove wrong was when his mistake cost Tonderai Ndiraya’s charges three points against Black Rhinos at Vengere last month.

Mvula’s only problem as far as pushing for the golden glove is concerned, is that he is currently injured, therefore Donovan Bernard and Wallace Malagane, who are on 15 and 13 clean sheets respectively, can eclipse his number in the remaining five games.

Frank Makarati (Dynamos)

One of the most consistent players in the PSL.

Makarati has been one of the standout players for Dynamos this season.

He has been a key in the Dynamos back line, in a campaign which captain Partson Jaure was not that consistent.

Makarati scored very crucial goals in big matches too. He was on target against CAPS United, Chicken Inn in Bulawayo and it was his solitary strike which propelled DeMbare to a 1-0 victory over Manica Diamonds last week.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Facts About World Mental Health Day

Whilst the pandemic has, and continues to, take its toll on our mental health, the ability to reconnect through World Mental Health Day 2022 will provide us with an opportunity to re-kindle our efforts to protect and improve mental health.

Many aspects of mental health have been challenged; and already before the pandemic in 2019 an estimated one in eight people globally were living with a mental disorder. At the same time, the services, skills and funding available for mental health remain in short supply, and fall far below what is needed, especially in low and middle income countries.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a global crisis for mental health, fueling short- and long-term stresses and undermining the mental health of millions. Estimates put the rise in both anxiety and depressive disorders at more than 25% during the first year of the pandemic. At the same time, mental health services have been severely disrupted and the treatment gap for mental health conditions has widened.

Growing social and economic inequalities, protracted conflicts, violence and public health emergencies affect whole populations, threatening progress towards improved well-being; a staggering 84 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced during 2021. We must deepen the value and commitment we give to mental health as individuals, communities and governments and match that value with more commitment, engagement and investment by all stakeholders, across all sectors. We must strengthen mental health care so that the full spectrum of mental health needs is met through a community-based network of accessible, affordable and quality services and supports.

Stigma and discrimination continue to be a barrier to social inclusion and access to the right care; importantly, we can all play our part in increasing awareness about which preventive mental health interventions work and World Mental Health Day is an opportunity to do that collectively. We envision a world in which mental health is valued, promoted and protected; where everyone has an equal opportunity to enjoy mental health and to exercise their human rights; and where everyone can access the mental health care they need.

WHO will work with partners to launch a campaign around the theme of Making Mental Health & Well-Being for All a Global Priority. This will be an opportunity for people with mental health conditions, advocates, governments, employers, employees and other stakeholders to come together to recognize progress in this field and to be vocal about what we need to do to ensure Mental Health & Well-Being becomes a Global Priority for all.

Campaign slogan
Make mental health & well-being for all a global priority

By Showbiz Reporter | IS THIS NDINYENGEIWO PART 2? – Lorraine Guyo appeared to throw in her charm for artist, Mudiwa Mtandwa after the rapper had announced he is looking for a love mate.

The suggestive chatter started after Mudiwa, who has failed to defend his own ailing cousin, Marry Chiwenga, had said he is looking to become another woman’s keeper.

Suspected Zanu PF Hooligans Attack CCC Member In Gutu

Tinashe Sambiri| Suspected Zanu PF hooligans raided CCC Gutu East member Desire Tichazorwa’s house and vandalised a constituency campaign vehicle on Wednesday night.

Tichazorwa is managing projects that have been implemented by businessman and banker Gift Gonese in Gutu East Constituency.

Commenting on the attack, Tichazorwa blamed Zanu PF thugs for attempting to disrupt CCC programmes.

” I heard a loud noise last night and as I tried to collect what was taking place, the intruders smashed windows of our constituency vehicle and deflated its tyres.

Zanu PF is afraid of the impact we are making in Gutu East.

When I shouted at the thugs, they ran away. They had a calculated mission to vandalize the constituency car.

There is no doubt that Zanu PF thugs raided my house. We are proceeding with our projects despite the attack,” said Tichazorwa.

Gonese said the attack would not stop a series of projects he is running in the area.

” While we are not happy with what happened, there is no going back. Our wave of development is unstoppable,” said Gonese.

On the question of the democratic alternative: A short treatise

By Pride Mkono| Politics is a socially constructed process of consuming power for purposes of appropriating scarce resources. It is through politics that complex modern societies are managed to either progress or stagnate even crumble. As a reality, power works though structures such as laws, institutions and relationships between those wielding it and those who must consent to be governed. This process results in the creation of a State and its institutions.

Most modern societies exercise political power through organs of the State popularly known as the three estates. These are the legislature, which makes laws, executive, which implements laws and judiciary, which interprets laws and adjudicates disputes. Democracy is a process to try and have the affairs of the State managed by consent of the majority of the population. This consent is derived through free, fair and credible elections and other checks and balances within the system. In its most advanced form, democracy also guarantees the protection of minorities and the vulnerable through State institutions and policies. It also entails the rule of law and equality of all citizens before the law. I have given these simple working definitions so that we can be on the same page as I present my argument on the case for a democratic alternative below.

Political power in Zimbabwe has been enjoyed by the ruling party, ZANU PF, since independence from white minority rule in 1980. For over four decades ZANU PF has ruled using authoritarian methods as opposed to democratic best practices. The consent of citizens has been obtained through coercion and State institutions have been captured to centralise power in a deep state controlled by a few elites in ZANU PF, state security apparatus, private businesses and international cartels. As an alternative, the opposition has campaigned on the back of establishing a democratic State. The most fierce challenge to ZANU PF’s stranglehold on power came from the MDC and most recently the CCC. Over the years and more importantly recently, questions have been raised on whether the opposition itself will be able to free the State from authoritarian tentacles towards a more democratic dispensation. These questions are not without basis because Zimbabwe has a history changing only faces yet the repressive authoritarian system has stayed intact and even becoming entrenched. ZANU PF fought the liberation struggle from white minority rule vociferously declaring that in a free Zimbabwe democracy shall reign. Its leader, Robert Mugabe, eloquently articulated this vision, yet he ruled for over three decades with an iron fist. The current President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, seized power on the back of a military coup which deposed Mugabe and he too pontificated about returning to democracy but the lived reality is that he has become a brazen autocrat. Therefore questioning if the opposition will govern differently is not a matter of casting aspersions but a genuine and rational exercise. As the adage goes, once between, twice shy. Zimbabweans seeking democratic alternatives must ask this very important question.

In asking this question, I want to look at four aspects which can help illuminate if we are able to sufficiently answer the question of the democratic alternative in Zimbabwe.

Ideological grounding

History teaches us that those fighting for a democratic alternative must ground themselves in a progressive ideology. From the declaration of independence of the United States of America, to the demands of a republican government of the French revolution, to communist war of national emancipation in China, to the fierce fight for freedom from apartheid in South Africa and to our war of national liberation, progressive ideological grounding provided a campus in all those instances. A democratic alternative can not be born out of reactionary and right wing populism. The phenomena of political pentecostalism, where a political movement is guided by fervent appeals to judio-christian values cannot result in a democratic alternative.

Democracy demands tolerance of religious freedoms and therefore a political movement based on the advancement of judio-christian values cannot produce a tolerant State that will respect those of alternative faith or those who interpret the principles differently. European history is awash with religious wars amongst those who professed belief in the same faith but interpreted it differently. Local Christian cults and churches regularly engage in violence over interpretation of the same faith. This is not to say those leading the opposition must not have religious freedom to the contrary, the beliefs must remain private and politics public. Therefore, without a clear progressive ideology shared by the masses it is impossible to attain a democratic alternative.

A vibrant political institution

The State is governed by institutions and organs. Authoritarian regimes undermine and erode the effectiveness of these institutions to provide checks and balances which are important for democracy. A democratic alternative must therefore have a vibrant political institution guided by rules and procedures that promote internal democracy. Put simply, it must have structures where decisions are discussed and reached at, structures to implement decisions, structures to manage membership and get feedback, structures to hold those implementing decisions to account and structures to manage external communication and resources.

A truly democratic alternative cannot function on the basis of arbitrary decisions of its leader or the consensus of a clique surrounding its leader. In fact the leader of a democratic alternative must seek mandate from its structures and membership. One cannot just declare themselves as a leader even if they have formed a political organization, unless the whole thing is like a pentecostal cult.

If a political movement is formed and functions like a pentecostal cult then it cannot lead to democratic outcomes and this is not to say it cannot attain power. In fact the biggest public danger arises when such a political formation takes power as it is bound to subvert institutions of the State so they function like it has been doing while in opposition. A real democratic alternative must exercise the democracy it will exercise when in power, its vibrant institution ought to serve as a training ground for democratic governance.

Must belong to the larger family of democrats

Struggles for democracy involve a wide range of players like civil society, labour, regional and international solidarity networks. A democratic alternative must be part of this large ecosystem of democratic champions. Within such an ecosystem, the democratic commitment of the political organization is put to test by its peers.

A political organization which doesn’t engage or consult others in the broader democratic ecosystem cannot learn to do so when in power. Arbitrary actions and top-down approaches can never be changed when a political organization is at the zenith of State power. Leaders of the democratic alternative need to learn the art of consensus building by engaging before they are in power. Such engagement is more important when developing blueprints and policies that are supposed to be national in nature. Authoritarian regimes abhor consulting citizens because they lack legitimacy so those in the democratic alternative must do the exact opposite.

Offer solidarity

Fighting authoritarian regimes is fraught with risks. Those leading and the most vocal are subjected to overt and covert strategies of coercion. Abduction, enforced disappearances, murder, and unlawful arrests and detention are some of gruesome methods applied to silence dissent. There is very little that individual citizens can do when the might of the State in the hands of a tyrant falls on them. However, it is the duty of the collective democratic ecosystem to organise solidarity responses as the case maybe.

Therefore, a political organization pushing for a democratic alternative must offer solidarity. At all times it ought to identify with the victims of state abuses, it must actively work to amplify the voices of the most downtrodden and poor. Solidarity should not be used as a moment of political posturing but as a deep moment to show collective humanity and people power.

The four aspects I have discussed above are not conclusive, but when applied can illuminate if a political organization in the opposition like CCC can be a democratic alternative. By offering these aspects I am not in any way insinuating that these are the deficits in the mainstream opposition but should they be then it’s an opportunity to correct. Finally, this is part of my contribution to the collective effort of building democracy in Zimbabwe, which is everyone’s responsibility.

Just In – Harare Municipal Police Assault Student

Tanatsiwa Dambuza

By A Correspondent- Harare municipal police this afternoon assaulted a student accusing him of taking pictures of their brutality against vendors.

Tanatsiwa Dambuza was beaten with clenched fists and boots by the municipal police officers and left with a red eye and swollen face.

Tanatsiwa Dambuza

Narrating his ordeal to Zimeye, Dambuza said:

“I was walking near Copacabana market when I witnessed the municipal police officers in uniform harassing a deaf and dumb woman after they had confiscated her wares.

One of the officers accused me of taking a picture of them pushing and shoving the vendor who was visibly at pains to communicate with them.

One of the officers then waylaid me and held me by the belt and trippled me. When I fell, they pulled me into their truck.

They ganged up on me and started accusing me of being a public nuisance.

They moved with me inside their truck while doing the rounds in Harare CBD and they were beating me up. They took my phone and deleted all pictures in my gallery.

They poured water on me and poured cool drink on my body. They also splashed me with strawberries that they had confiscated.

I sustained a swollen eye and face from the ordeal before they dumped me at Harare Central police station and told me to go.”

He is yet to make a police report.

Efforts to get a comment from Mayor Mafume was work in progress by the time of writing.

Fraud Suspect Given Greenlight To Contest Zanu PF Central Committee Elections

Zanu-PF has given the nod to socialite Mike Chimombe’s candidature to stand in the weekend elections for the ruling party’s Central Committee (CC).

The polls are being fiercely contested amid allegations of vote buying, rigging and intimidation.

Chimombe, popularly known as Boss Mike, was recently arrested for allegedly defrauding a Harare man of US$16,500 in a botched residential stand deal. He is out of custody on bail.

According to a leaked Zanu-PF Mashonaland West list submitted and endorsed by the party’s Politburo at its Wednesday meeting held in Harare, Chimombe will fight it out for one of the four Makonde district slots alongside equally wealthy businessmen and former councillors, Charles Mutisi and Simba Kanzou.

Information Deputy Minister, Kindness Paradza also made it onto the list of successful candidates to challenge incumbent Makonde CC member, Phineas Makumbe in one of the impending plebiscites.

According to sources, Paradza and Local Government Deputy Minister, Marian Chombo of Zvimba North, both have President Emmerson Mnangagwa to thank after he reportedly intervened to save them from being labelled “rebels” and removal from the contestants’ list for their previous flirtations with opposition parties.

Paradza once joined yester-year finance minister Simba Makoni’s Mavambo/Kusile/ Dawn party, while Chombo was a top-ranking official in the National Patriotic Front (NPF) led by embittered former vice president, Joice Mujuru.

Another top Zanu-PF official and former Cabinet minister, Prisca Mupfumira accused of grand corruption involving over US$90million at the National Social Security Authority (NSSA), will contest the Makonde women’s quota slot against Martha Tafirenyika, who according to sources initially had her curriculum vitae (CV) suspiciously going missing.

In an interesting turn of events, some key Zanu-PF members, including outspoken Chegutu West lawmaker Dexter Nduna, former information deputy minister Bright Matonga and ex-finance deputy minister Terrence Mukupe had their candidatures disapproved for various reasons.

“Nduna was disqualified for pending disciplinary matters and the vetting panel recommended him to be enrolled at the Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology in order to whip the rebellious MP into line,” a Zanu-PF insider told NewZimbabwe.com Wednesday.

“Matonga wanted to contest for the Mhondoro-Ngezi slot but had his CV thrown out for being a security threat while Mukupe was not cleared because he didn’t have a transfer letter from his former Harare province.”

Former Hurungwe legislator, Franco Ndambakuwa was reportedly disqualified due to a rape conviction.

Other unsuccessful candidates were Clever Kunonga of Chegutu West, who was struck off the list for his history in the opposition NPF, while Tsikayi Sungano, who wanted to contest against former health minister, Douglas Mombeshora in the Mhangura polls, was barred for failing to meet the minimum five years threshold at senior party level.

Town Clerk Frogmarched Out Of Office

By A Correspondent- Residents Association of Victoria Falls on Tuesday frogmarched Town Clerk, Ronnie Dube, out of his office after he was suspended for alleged abuse of office.

On February 25, you unilaterally allocated the Council dumpsite to Greenline Africa, in partnership with Mosi oa Tunya Waste and Landfill (Pvt) Ltd without a Council resolution.

“In your letter dated February 25, you stated that management had no authority to lease out the said dumpsite/landfill site or sewerage pond area.

“You acted outside the scope of your mandate and powers by usurping Council powers.”

Added the letter:

On August 4, as the Town Clerk of the City of Victoria Falls, you caused the transfer of                           US$84 000 from a Council account.

You misled Council to award the tender to Zambezi Properties, whose bid of US$4.2 million was lower than the highest bid of US$5.7 million.

“You failed to discharge your duties diligently and effectively in line with the express or implied conditions of your contract of employment.

“In your capacity as Town Clerk, you have failed to solve perennial service delivery challenges, namely water shortages.”

Angry Mourners Bash Mom Of Minor Who Died While Giving Birth

By A Correspondent- Angry mourners yesterday bashed the mother of a Grade 7 pupil who died while giving birth at an apostolic church shrine in Bikita.

Muparadziwo was assaulted by some mourners, who demanded to know why she didn’t accompany her pregnant daughter, Nokutenda Hwaramba, 15, to Bikita, where she died in labour.

Nokutenda was taken to Bikita by her father, Bernard Hwaramba, to his church’s shrine for prayers, when she complained of being unwell.

One mourner told H-Metro that the family was heartless, especially the mother.

“We are mothers who know how painful it is from pregnancy to delivery,” she said.

Nokutenda was a young girl and her condition was described as demonic by church members.

“Instead of taking Nokutenda to the clinic to save her life, they decided to follow their church doctrine.

“Furthermore, Loice did not bother to accompany Nokutenda to Bikita even though she was also pregnant.

We are waiting for a better explanation from Bernard and we do not want to see their church members here.

“They caused Nokutenda’s death by not taking her for medical assistance, describing her condition as evil spirits.

“Mai ava tanga tichida kuvarovera nyaya yekudzivirira murume wavo.

“Bernard has been abusing Nokutenda and we are aware of that.

“He blocked Nokutenda from being taken to her lover after neighbours discovered that she was pregnant

Hwaramba had been staying with Nokutenda, and two other children, following his separation from her mother Muparadziwo.

Muparadziwo has since remarried.

Hwaramba is expected to accompany his daughter’s body from Bikita.

Meet Victoria Falls Safari Spa Manager Avalon van Leent

Victoria Falls Safari Spa manager Avalon van Leent is excited to be bringing a new standard to spas in Victoria Falls and putting Zimbabwe’s leading tourist attraction on the map as a wellness destination.

“It’s exciting because it’s the first purpose-built spa in Victoria Falls and marks a new milestone in the wellness industry in Zimbabwe, with Victoria Falls now catching up with the rest of the world,” Avalon said.

Victoria Falls Safari Spa, nestled in peaceful indigenous woodland, rich in birdlife, with the occasional bushbuck or warthog passing by, will feature three stand-alone treatment rooms, and a main area with a hair and make-up studio, a polish bar, a splash pool and café.

The African tented safari camp style spa will offer massages, facials, manicure and pedicures, as well as many other treatments, with mini options available for children. Its offerings will include half day and full day packages and wellness weekends.

“People are very much about creating memories when they travel, so spa treatments, which can be enjoyed with friends or your partner, will be a wonderful way to do this,” Avalon, 36, said.

She believes Victoria Falls Safari Spa could potentially extend stays in Victoria Falls, as it adds another element to the destination, and while men may choose to play golf or go fishing, women may opt for a spa treatment.

Born in Masvingo, Avalon studied Holistic and Spa Therapies with Camelot International in Johannesburg, where she gained a CIDESCO qualification, the world’s most prestigious qualification for Aesthetics and Beauty Therapy.

After her studies, Avalon joined a 5-star cruise ship called The Quest, part of the Yachts of Seabourn, to gain international experience and travel the world as a spa therapist, before moving to Australia and gaining further experience in the wellness industry.

But it was always her dream to return home, bringing her knowledge and experience to Zimbabwe, and after she and her husband Martijn’s travel plans were disrupted during the Covid-19 pandemic they moved to Victoria Falls.

Avalon will head up a team of four therapists when Victoria Falls Safari Spa, which will use all natural, plant-based Africology and Cashmere & Co. products, opens on November 1.

Madam Boss Collapses Over Hubby’s Pregnant Lover

By A Correspondent – Madam Boss collapsed as her husband, Ngoni Munetsiwa, begged her to allow his pregnant lover, Evangelista Zhou, to remain at their matrimonial house in Seke, until she finds alternative accommodation.

The meeting followed Evangelista’s decision to apply for a peace order against Madam Boss. Ngoni and his sisters tried to persuade her into giving Evangelista a period of time to vacate their Seke home.

In return, Ngoni was to persuade Evangelista to drop her protection order application against Madam Boss

A confident Ngoni said:

“I have talked to my wife about this matter and we agreed on a way forward.

Political Analysts Speak On Sikhala Detention

Political analyst and academic, Alexander Rusero, says the continued incarceration of firebrand Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislator, Job Sikhala is a ploy by Zanu-PF to instil fear on dissent ahead of the 2023 harmonised elections.

Rusero was speaking during a press briefing on organised violence and torture convened by the Research and Advocacy Unity (RAU) in Mutare on Tuesday.

His remarks come at a time legislators Sikhala, Godfrey Sithole and other CCC activists have locked up four months in pre-trial detention.

Rusero said this was unimaginable, blaming the ruling party for lacking democracy.

“In some way Job’s spirit is being broken. That is violence; imagine being separated from your family for more than 90 days without being tried,” Rusero said.

He said the message being communicated is that, in politics, one cannot survive without any backup.

“Zanu-PF is a competitive authoritarian regime which strikes a balance between certain things that are very progressive. There are certain progressive things that Zanu-PF does that one can envy but you cannot take the bush out of them,” he said.

“The bush will always be in them, hence they are striking fear. Competitive authoritarian regimes strike a balance between what is acceptable and what is not; hence that balance retains some minimum degree of legitimacy that they want.

“You can not separate Zanu-PF from organised violence and torture because that was the modus operandi of liberation movement connotations which viewed people in binary characteristics, you either with us and you are Patriot or against us and you are an enemy.

Rusero said the “problematic aspect” of treating citizens as enemies and others as patriots has resulted in organised violence and torture.

“When you hear Zanu-PF saying asingazive ngaadzidziswe (those who don’t know must be educated), what is it they want to teach you and what is the methodology of such a teaching.

“It is not like they will take you to the classroom, the approach is actually organised violence and torture. Looking at organised violence and torture in Zimbabwe precisely with regards to elections, Zanu-PF has been to a larger extent very complicity in being the culprit.”

The Nyatsime16 were arrested four months ago for allegedly inciting the violence which erupted during a memorial service for slain CCC activist, Moreblessing Ali.

Sikhala was representing Ali’s family following her gruesome murder and was on the forefront demanding justice.

Ali’s family vowed not to bury her decapitated body until Sikhala is freed.

Minor Dies While Giving Birth At Shrine

By A Correspondent- There is shock and outrage in Norton after a Grade 7 pupil died on Tuesday while giving birth at a shrine in Bikita, Masvingo.

Nokutenda Hwaramba died together with her baby, at a shrine, where she was being cared for by unidentified prophets.

She was 15.

Her parents, Bernard Hwaramba, 41, and Loice Muparadziwo were not with Nokutenda at the shrine where they dumped her for prayers.

Nokutenda’s mother, Loice, told H-Metro that she also had a miscarriage on the day her daughter died, while in labour.

Nokutenda was said to have been impregnated by one Aaron from our neighbourhood.

“She got sick and would just fall as if possessed by evil spirits.

“Her father consulted prophets from his congregation and later took her to Bikita for more prayers.

“He left Nokutenda in the hands of the intercessors and she died while giving birth at the shrine.

“The church doctrine did not allow us to take Nokutenda to a clinic, or hospital, to give birth or for any medical treatment.

I failed to accompany them to Bikita because I  had a miscarriage and was at Norton General Hospital on the day Nokutenda passed away,” said Loice.

Aaron was reported to have vanished from Norton after Hwaramba learnt that he was responsible for his daughter’s pregnancy.

He said the family intends to collect Nokutenda’s body from Bikita and take it to Mt Darwin for burial.

Mourners are gathered at Hwaramba’s homestead in Katanga, Norton.

The tragedy has left the town of Norton in shock and anger.

In January this year, a pregnant 15-year-old Marange girl died after bleeding excessively, under the watch of a faith healer.

Ferby Munyafi of Chiadzwa Village in Chief Marange’s area, was married to 29-year-old Arthur Chitombo, of the same village.

Chitombo was arrested and charged with having sexual relations with a minor.

The two got married in April last year and, when the teenager got pregnant, she did not register her pregnancy at the clinic.

On January 9, she started experiencing labour pains and was rushed to a faith healer in Mafararikwa Village.

The police report indicated that on January 12, Ferby bled profusely as she was in labour and died before she could give birth.

ED Denounces Violence

By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa has denounced violence and vote buying as his ruling Zanu-PF party gears up for its central committee elections this weekend.

Central Committee elections are a precursor to the Zanu-PF’s congress which will be held later this month.

The build-up to the central committee elections has been marred by reports of party bigwigs looking to secure posts in the most powerful arm of the ruling party without being contested.

In his opening remarks at Wednesday’s Zanu-PF politburo meeting President Mnangagwa warned against underhanded actions in this weekend elections.

“The Central Committee election process must be approached with great diligence and purpose and spirit of Camaraderie,” he said.

“The Central Committee is the highest organ of the Party in between congresses. In light of this, every cadre of the Party is reminded that there is no room for concession regarding party principles, rules and regulations.”

He added;

“We must observe the provisions of the party constitution. All eligible members of the Party have the right to participate in the central committee elections.”

Party members have been jostling for positions in the central committee with indications top leaders were targeting certain positions to be reserved for them.

The ruling party is organising itself as it looks to maintain its stranglehold on power being winning general elections scheduled for next year.

President Mnangagwa said party procedures and regulations must be followed during the weekend elections.

“In light of the beckoning Central Committee Elections, all eligible members of the Party have the right to participate in the elections, subject to the rules.

“Candidates must be identified and selected by the appropriate organs of the Party. There is no room for chicanery of whatever nature and form.

“Vote buying, violence, name dropping and imposition of candidates are not and will never be part of our political and organisational DNA.”

Mnangagwa demanded unity and challenged the party to ensure “resounding” victory in next year’s general elections.

“No one should be allowed to divide our party,” he said.

“We are one, colossal, mass revolutionary party; hence every wing of the party, affiliate organisation and indeed member, is directed to work.

“Together in unity, from the village, ward, constituency, district and provincial level, we all shoulder the responsibility of ensuring a resounding and thunderous victory for the party in the 2023 Harmonised General Elections”.

He added; “We are the only party with a revolutionary history; a people-centred agenda for the present and a vision for the future.

Mliswa Says Mapfumo Is Right To Fear Coming To Zim

By Jane Mlambo| Controversial Norton legislator Temba Mliswa has backed Chimurenga music icon Thomas Mapfumo who last week said he was not able to come to Zimbabwe to bury his brother and former band member Lancelot Mapfumo due to fear of arrest.

Mliswa said with the way the Zimbabwe government is using state institutions to victimize its opponents including Zengeza West legislator Job Sikhala and St Marys parliamentarian Godfrey Sithole as well as renowned author Tsitsi Dangarembga, Mapfumo is justified to be avoid visiting the country.

“Thomas Mapfumo’s fear to return to Zimbabwe, even for his brother’s funeral is very valid and he is well within his right to do so. For some of us who have experienced what its like to be victimised using state apparatus we can understand him. It’s better to be safe.

“We endured the pain of victimisation because we were younger, he can’t survive it at his age. Look at @JobSikhala1, Dangarembga, etc the system has been pursuing them& using state institutions to victimise them. He must avoid that. Once orders are given from above it’s bad for,” said Mliswa while posting on Twitter.

Killer Zivhu Rips Into Makandiwa

Controversial politician and former Chivi South legislator Killer Zivhu has accused popular prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa of paying a blind eye to the suffering his members are going through while endorsing supporting corruption by the elites.

Speaking during a church address, Makandiwa said, ‘corruption is corruption, but the one of chopping down half of the amount, USD5billion, is not at all corruption if the roads are constructed.’

Zivhu hit back saying Makandiwa’s life was going on well yet thousands of his church members had retreated to rural areas after going broke while seeding to him.

“Makandiwa their Prophet deleted my comment yesterday, but let me say it again, Mufundisi zvenyu zviri kufamba chose, from Chitungwiza to madheudheu, but do know kuti thousands of your church members are now moving kuinda kumusha, mari dzakapera vachiita seeding ku church,” said Zivhu.

Meanwhile, self exiled former Zanu PF cabinet member Professor Jonathan Moyo has also accused Makandiwa of being a rolling stone.

By A Correspondent | Businessman Kuda Tagwirei wants to purchase the country’s first-residents-money built-giant-stadium, Rufaro, ZimEye has learnt.

This comes at a time when it also emerged that the former Douglas Mwonzora led Harare City Council had by last year leased out Rufaro to Tagwirei’s Sakunda company.

In the latest development, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume, who has battled out the takeover of the Pomona Dumpsite by the alleged “Mabelreign-armed robber” Delish Nguwaya’s Geogenix BV company, has put his foot down saying he will not sign off any council properties during his term.

Sources told ZimEye, Tagwirei has been secretly bidding for the city’s 2nd stadium which was built by Harare residents in 1972 and commissioned by a junior Councillor (picture). Properties built with residents’ money cannot be sold off to businesspeople who became billionaires in the same city that made them prosper, says Mayor Mafume.

Said Mayor Mafume:

“I am tired of phonecalls, I am tired of candestine meetings…

Harare Mayor speaking to residents yesterday

“We are not going to surrender council property to people who have made money in Harare, and they want to take the inheritance of all the residents and give it to their children and they say we were cleverer than other residents, so that your children inherit properties that belong to the city.

“What kind of businesspeople are they? We don’t need them. What we should be doing is properly charging then rates and taxes, so that they understand that it is not their money.

“How do you take things that have been inherited by residents from the 1970s and we want to give to an individual company?

“So let’s stop promising people properties that belong to the city…

“So tell them, many of them to stop coming to my office, to the councillors trying to persuade them…even you, avoid promising people properties that belong to the city.

“And those business people, we have made you rich as a city, we have made you billionaires not only in Zim, but across Africa and the world, if you want to give back, give back properly…”

The most popular sports in Africa apart from Football

Football is the world’s game and nowhere is this more apparent than on the entire African continent. People from all over Africa have a deep and historical love for the beautiful game and it will most likely stay that way for a very long time into the future.

But at the same time, interest in other sports across the continent is growing. Part of this is because of internet streaming that makes it possible to watch international sports in different ways than before. Today a person in Zimbabwe or South Africa can take part in the March Madness picks on the same level as someone in America.

In this text we’re going to share some of the most popular sports across Africa as a whole, apart from football. Maybe you will find something interesting to watch after the world cup is over.

Rugby

Rugby is a great sport enjoyed by many in Africa, and just in South Africa alone there are 600 000 registered players with the national federation. South Africa is without a doubt the powerhouse of African rugby as a whole, even though Kenya has started to produce some very impressive players and results in recent years. Rugby is just like football, a very accessible sport to pick up and play, and one can expect to see more and more quality players coming from more countries in the coming years.

Athletics

Ever since the first ever African gold in the olympics in 1908, Africa has been one of the strongest contenders in the world when it comes to athletics. Even though athletics as a whole is very popular, the biggest impact on the international stage has been in the field of running, where countries like Kenya has time and time again proven to be the best in the world.

Basketball

Basketball was first played on the African continent in the middle of the 1960’s, and today it’s a popular sport among young people across many countries. According to the international power rankings Nigeria is by far the best country with Tunisia in second place. Africa has had a couple of players make it all the way to the NBA, something that without a doubt has led to many young boys and girls dreaming of playing in the NBA one day. Today it’s not uncommon to see youngsters wearing sweatshirts and jerseys to support their favorite team or players, even though those players live halfway across the world.

Chaos In Zanu PF Ahead Of Weekend Elective Meeting

Billiat Honoured

Khama Billiat has been named in the Confederation of African Football Champions League Team of the Decade.

Billiat made the team following his performance during the 2015/16 season when he was still with Mamelodi Sundowns.

He won the Champions League trophy in that campaign and CAF named him the second best Africa-based player of the year behind the then Sundowns teammate Denis Onyango.

Billiat also played in another Champions League final in 2021, with Kaizer Chiefs, but lost to Al Ahly.

Uganda goalkeeper Onyango and Percy Tau, who were both part of Sundowns’ 2016 winning team, were also included in the list.

This makes Tau (South Africa), Billiat (Zimbabwe) and former TP Mazambe defender Stoppila Sunzu (Zambia) the only players from the COSAFA Region to be included in the Champions League Team of the Decade.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe
